here was much criticism from all over the world labelling Mumbai city a 'retiring city', even as revenue sources are shrinking and business firms are making their way out of the city. Now, to attract business in a big way, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have gone into damage control mode and opened a special and dedicated department named Business Development. Two centuries ago, Mumbai was born as a business hub and it retained its significance over centuries. However, due to internal factors which include limited infrastructure, heavy taxation, license raj and external factors like rise of new business hubs like Dubai, Bahrain, Malaysia and Hong Kong in Asia, Mumbai city is losing its significance and being marginalised. It is a proven fact that business firms are going to neighbouring state of Gujarat. This is reflected on the octroi, one of the two major sources of revenue for the city civic

S V R Srinivasan, Addl. Mun. Comm. body. Octroi which has recorded six to eight per cent annual growth over decades, has been fluctuating and growth is mainly flat in the last two fiscal years. According to civic officials, this year, Rs.100 crore deficit has been recorded in the collection of octroi through the city ports. The loss of revenue will be clearer in the next fiscal budget which will be presented in mid February by the Municipal Commissioner. Additional Municipal Commissioner SVR Srinivas said, “If timely damage control system is not in place, then city will be truly a 'retir-

ing city' – a city for retired people. So we have established a separate department – Department of Business Development.” BMC would be first civic body in the country to have a dedicated department to attract new business in the city. While addressing the Standing Committee meeting on the new department he said, “To attract new business, we are planning to reduce number of no objection certificates (NOC) and other licenses.” He added, “To make healthy environment for business, we are planning that we will not charge or charge minimum tax on new business for a year or two, till they start making a profit.” The department will be headed by an Assistant Commissioner rank officer. At present business is concentrated in Nariman Point, Lower Parel, BKC and Andheri East. This area is under huge infrastructure burden and existing tranport system is not efficient. The civic body is planning to boost infrastructure in these business districts.

Now, renew licences, BACK TO IMPOSING FINES! pay bills online T By Philip Varghese

he Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) yesterday announced that a free mobile application will be available for Mumbaikars to pay their water bills online and will also give them access to renew their licences. “Mumbaikars can start renewing their licences from the next week once it is launched,” said SVR Srinivas, additional municipal commissioner of the BMC.“Mumbaikars today lead a very busy life and the BMC renews more than one lakh licences every year. The licences can be easily renewed through the MCGM 24X7 application and the people can easily take a print out of the renewed license through the application,” added Srinivas. Former mayor Sunil Prabhu had announced on July 27 last year that the free mobile app called 'MCGM 24X7' will be available for

Android phone users and can be downloaded from Google Play Store, which will allow citizens to avoid standing in long queues and pay their bills while on the move. The Shiv Sena-led MCGM has developed this application with the help of the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) and the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL). “With the help of this application the citizens are able to pay their water bills. We are also in the process to enable people to pay their property tax,” added the officer. For the payment of bills, the C-DAC platform will be integrated with the NSDL payment gateway. On being asked about the modes of payment through the application, Srinivas said bills can be paid through net banking, credit cards, debit cards and Immediate Payment Service. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

he state government on Wednesday informed the Bombay High Court that traffic constables in Maharashtra have been empowered again to collect fines from law-breaking motorists and autodrivers with effect from December 10 last year. This comes after the Bombay High Court in October last year had directed the state to decide on a proposal sent by the transport commissioner to empower traffic constables to impose fines on the spot.

The court was hearing a petition filed by Bombay Bar Association highlighting traffic woes of the city and alleging haphazard planning by the state and the department concerned. The division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice BP Colabawala then had observed that even after the passage of two years and nine months, the government was undecided on the proposal, which, it said, was unfortunate. Earlier constables were stripped of such powers and only head constables, numbering around 300 in the city, were empowered to collect fines from traffic offenders. Power was withdrawn after a constable

in December 2011 confiscated the driving licence of the son of the additional chief secretary and asked him to collect it after paying a fine. The bench had then said, “If the constable cannot impose a fine, it implies that he can taken money illegally, but not a fine.” However, in keeping with a High Court Court order of October 28, 2014, the government has now restored the powers of collecting fines to the constables, government pleader told the bench headed by Chief Justice Mohit Shah. The court had then also directed the BMC to have all zebra crossings and stop lines painted by December 18. The HC was informed that in February 2012 a proposal was mooted by the Transport Commissioner's office to the state government suggesting that the power to impose fines should be given to all traffic constables to bring about effective implementation of rules. The government assured the HC that its order was being implemented. It said the HC's order to paint zebra crossings and lane markings on the roads was also being carried out. The court has asked the BMC to file an affidavit in this regard within two weeks. Advocate Armin Wandrewale, who intervened in the matter, argued that the constables should be empowered to levy fines. She also maintained there was no regular patrolling by police on state and national highways. A 11-member committee, appointed by the High Court to study city's traffic woes had identified 35 problem areas. The panel had said, haphazard, free or cheap parking of vehicles generally led to snarls.

“Compared to cities such as Hong Kong, New York and Bangkok, parking in Indian cities was much cheaper. In Hong Kong and New York, pricing is market-driven with monthly parking rates for a reserved space ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000. As a result, car ownership in such vertical cities is much lower than what the purchasing power of people in these urban centres would warrant,” said a report given by the committee.

Pizza for the homeless

Newcomers at Rosa's Fresh Pizza might think the store's owner has an odd obsession with sticky notes. But the plethora of pinks, blues and yellows spanning the restaurant's walls have nothing to do with interior aesthetics and everything to do with uniting a community in caring for its poorest residents. Mason Wartman, who owns the Philadelphia pizza parlor, is gaining national attention for his unique business model of giving back.

Customers at Rosa's, where a piece of pizza is USD 1, can choose to buy a slice for a homeless person for just another buck. They're then able to write a heartfelt message on a sticky note and add it to the wall, where those in need who've benefited from the pay it forward pizza have also written responses of gratitude. Customers have bought about 8,400 slices of pizza for the homeless over the past nine months. Wartman's post-its were originally

intended to keep track of how many slices were available for hungry customers. But after the number of free slices grew to about 500, his post-it strategy could no longer could keep up with the demand to give back. Wartman now uses the store's register to stay on top of how many slices have been paid for ahead of time by kind customers. Rosa’s Fresh Pizza opened its doors in December 2013. The owner started his business after leaving the hustle and bustle of Wall Street behind. He moved back home to Philly because he wanted to open his own slice pizza business after seeing how well similar pizza restaurants were doing in Manhattan. A customer once walked into Rosa’s Fresh Pizza and asked to buy a slice of pizza for a homeless person outside. Mason quickly agreed to help the customer with the gesture, and he put the customer’s free slice offer on a post-it note and placed it on the wall behind the cash register. After that, he went out to buy a stack of post-it notes. That started the practice of a homeless person coming in and taking a post-it note off the wall to exchange it for a slice of pizza. Wartman does not rush out his homeless patrons either. He treats them just like he would any other paying customer. They sit down and eat their slice of pizza with the other customers in the restaurant, and he watches how everyone interacts from his spot behind the counter.

Turmoil in BJP over MLC nominations

Afternoon Despatch & Courier

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JANUARY 22, 2015

By Prashant Hamine

T

he manner in which the candidature of state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) women's wing president Smita Wagh for the legislative council by-elections was made has ruffled quite a few feathers in the state party unit. Sources in the party disclosed that senior Minister for Revenue Eknath Khadse managed to set aside Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis nominee state party chief spokesperson Madhav Bhandari on the grounds that the party needed to project a mass based leader, a woman and a Maratha community leader. Although BJP president Amit Shah was in town yesterday, sources disclosed that he preferred to overlook the brewing resentment in the party and instead chose to seek information on the membership drive in the state. Sources disclosed that the party's central leadership had left the selection of the party candidates for the legislative

projecting Kiran Bedi as its chief ministerial candidate till late in the night. Sources disclosed that the Khadse camp prevailed over the central leadership in securing its nod for Wagh. Bhandari since then has gone incommunicado as he has been overlooked consistently by the party leadership for a party ticket for Lok Sabha, Assembly and now the legislative council elections. Sources disclosed that before leaving for World Economic Forum meet at Davos, Fadnavis is reported to have held a close door meeting with Bhandari trying to console him. A faction of the BJP also tried to bid for Bhandari's candidature with Khadse but the latter evaded any talk on Eknath Khadse the issue. What has irked the party is council by-elections to the the candidature for Shiv Sanstate party president Raosa- gram leader and former Naheb Danve, Chief Minister tionalist Congress Party Devendra Fadnavis and other (NCP) Vinayak Mete. Sources top state leaders. The central argued that Mete all along in leadership was busy grap- his political career been critipling with the New Delhi as- cal of the BJP ideology. Mete sembly elections and acolyte Bharati Lavhekar is

already an MLA in the lower house elected on the BJP symbol. Sources disclosed that even the candidature to Rashtriya Samaj Paksha (RSP) president Mahadev Jankar is another surprise as his partyman Harshawardhan Jadhav is already an MLA. The BJP move to accommodate Mete, Jankar and Wagh has left a bitter taste in its Mahayuti allies – the Republican Party of India (Athawale) and Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatna (SSS) leader Sadabhau Khot. The latter now is openly voicing his resentment arguing that the time had come to rethink about continuing their alliance with the BJP after it has overlooked its allies. Rajya Sabha MP and RPI-A leader Ramdas Athawale too was hopeful of getting a berth in the legislative council, but was given a raw deal. However, a section of the BJP argued that supporters of Khot who vandalised the sugar commissioner office in Pune had done a bit more to damage his own candidature. Meanwhile, the BJP was in for another embarrassment with party MLC Shobhatai Fadnavis and aunt of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis staging protest against toll naka at Borkhedi near Nagpur. She however has denied that her agitation was against the National Highway department headed by partys union minister Nitin Gadkari.

BJP has not kept its promise, says Athawale By A Special Correspondent

T

he Republican Party of India (RPI) president Ramdas Athawale has alleged that the BJP has not kept its promise of giving a MLC seat in the state legislature and making him a minister at the Centre. A couple of days ago the BJP announced the MLC seat to Rashtriya Samaj Party (RSP) and Shivsangram party, totally ignoring the RPI. Due to which Athawale became furious. Speaking to ADC he said, “We were promised the MLC seat by the BJP leadership. But they virtually bolted the door on us. The BJP has forgotten our contribution in the party's victory in the Assembly elections.” “I was hopping that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah would consider my name for a ministerial berth at the Centre. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis wanted me to return to state politics once again. He even offered me a berth in the state cabinet. But I am only interested

ataracts refers to the clouding of the eye’s natural lens. The vision drops, reading and driving become progressively more difficult as does threading a needle. The colours not as brilliant and intense as before and the overall vision seems a bit misty. In Modern cataract surgery, natural lens which has become cloudy is replaced by a plastic /silicone/ Collamer lens (IOL).

The surgical area is visible in a 3D magnified view on a monitor, which offers greater depth perception and detailed views than does open surgery. From the remote console, the surgeon precisely directs the laser into the eye at the operating table. The Surgeons have more flexibility, control and manoeuvra-

bility using the surgical instruments in surgery than in traditional minimally invasive surgery. Using the bladefree, femtosecond cataract surgery system, the cataract surgery can be performed delicately and complex procedures with virtual total safety and with high efficiency, literally in seconds. In highly advanced surgery, the reduced trauma leads to a quicker recovery compared with open surgery.

Ramdas Athawale in working at the Centre,” he added. The RPI was a part of prepoll alliance stitched by the BJP before the state elections. Before the elections, the saffron party gave them a written promise of berth at the Centre and a MLC seat. With BJP going back on its word, Athawale strongly reacted on this development. “I am once again making it clear that I wish to remain at the Centre. So there is no question of returning to state politics. We are optimistic that BJP will keep its own word. We will wait for some more time,” Ahavale pointed out.

The Catalys cataract surgery system is bladeless as it can make all the cuts openings in perfect shape, size and position using the femtosecond laser. The laser cuts just like an invisible sword on the micrometer. The opening of the capsule is done with micro millimeter perfection giving a perfectly centered and round safe rhexis, then it evaporates the cataract using the advanced laser pattern scanning technology. Blade-Free Femtosecond Cataract surgery, using the Catalys Precision Laser System is so simple that the patient walks off the table and since the laser opening are self sealing, can join the office the next day, have a bath or even travel with complete safety. Several Advantages and benefits of cataract surgery with the Latest Blade-Free, Femtosecond Laser Surgery utilizing the “Catalys” over regular phacoemulsification surgery include Precise and safe treatment, individually tailored to your needs treatment plan based on a 3D image of your eye, Gentle and easy removal of the clouded lens & Faster recovery rate due to lower inflammation.

Congress leader Kripashankar Singh is accused of possessing illegal arms and the charge-sheet in the case was filed on Tuesday

he half burnt body found at Sanpada has been identified as a Govandi housewife whose husband is suspected to have killed and dumped her. Nagma Qureshi, 22, was staying at Kamla Raman Nagar, Govandi with her husband Shahid Qureshi, 30, and her in-laws. Shahid is suspected to have killed Nagma on January 3. Cops got a breakthrough in the case because Shahid registered a missing person's complaint on January 16 saying that his wife is missing since January 12. That's when the police suspected that he may be involved in the crime. Her gold earrings were found on her body which pointed that the killing is for personal reasons. Shahid has been absconding since Monday, after Nagma's body was identified. According to Nagma's family, Nagma's first marriage

failed because she eloped with Shahid. “Shahid's parents didn't approve of the marriage, hence he must have killed Nagma to get rid of her,” said Asma, Nagma's sister. Sanpada police has registered a case of murder and is looking for Shahid. Nagma's body was found on January 4 near the Bamandev Temple in Sarsole Creek, off Palm Beach Road. People spotted the severed, half burnt body on their way to the temple and informed the

police. The Turbhe police suspected some relative to be behind the murder because no missing complaint was registered for a week. After a missing person's complaint was registered at Deonar, the cops called Nagma's relative to identify the body. “We are investigating the case and can’t divulge further details. We suspect Shahid, but we can’t be sure till we trace him,” said senior inspector Shekhar Bagade of Sanapda police station.

Mira-Bhayandar hoteliers get a food safety pep talk By Suresh Golani

n a bid create awareness about the rules and regulations of the Food Safety and Standard Act (FSSA) among local hoteliers and eatery owners, the Thane district unit of the Food and Drugs authority (FDA) orgainsed a seminar in Mira Road on Wednesday. Around 100 members of the Mira Bhayandar Hotel Association attended the seminar in the presence of assistant FDA commissioner Rajendra Runwal and standing committee chairman

Prashant Keluskar. Replacing the age old Prevention of Food Adulteration (PFA) Act, 1954, which was confined only to check food adulteration, the state government brought into force the FSSA with the objective of consolidating the laws relating to food and to curb adulteration by prescribing higher penalties for violation of food laws. The act is a culmination of nine separate acts that come together to cover every aspect of food safety involving everyone in the industry right from the manufacturers and

cation to underprivileged children in India. All the rescued children belong to Motihari district in Bihar and were accompanied by 38 traffickers. Sixty-eight of the 83 children have been sent to remand homes in Dongri and Mankhurd. A few of them have returned to their parents in Bihar and are now admitted in a school in Mothihari. Fifteen children were handed over to their parents who had themselves brought the children to the city to work in hotels and production of leather goods in Dharavi. suppliers to the hoteliers. Making special mention of the food inspection provision concerning hotels and restaurants, Runwal urged the industry stakeholders to keep track of the supply chain to avoid adulteration of ingredients used in the making of food. The objective of the new act is to consolidate the laws relating to food and to curb food adulteration by prescribing higher penalties for violation of food laws. It will also establish the Food Safety Management System to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption. Under the FSSA the FDA can serve outlets with an improvement notice which needs evidence-based compliance to avoid penal action.

oday little Pinky (name changed to protect identity) walks cautiously with a spine that has a curve of 60 degrees. But sometime ago, her condition was worse. With a spine that was bent up to 82 degrees, the misery she and her family had been experiencing was unfathomable. She was suffering from Scoliosis, a condition where the spine shows abnormal curvatures that result in misaligned shoulders or increasing rib hump. Her condition has now improved thanks to the new technique in spine correction that uses radical technology where magnetic rods are used to correct distorted curvature and straighten the spine. Pinky is among the first few children to have undergone a surgery using this technology. This technology been brought to the city rather in the whole of the western region of the country for the first time by Dr Ashok Johari, a paediatric orthopaedic who is associated with several hospitals, public as well as

onsidering the gender equality, which is one of the domains of democratic citizenship, the Children's Movement for Civic Awareness (CMCA) Yuva Nagarik Metre conducted a study on the biased and negative stereotypes among the young population in urban India. This study revealed that 55 per cent of the youth agreed that women's dress and behaviour provoke violent reactions from men. The Yuva Nagarik Metre is a first of its kind study that maps and creates a national baseline of the level of Democratic Citizenship among Indian youth. CMCA – is a Bangalore-based NGO that instills values of active citizenship and democracy among children and youth through a sustained, yearlong programme in schools and colleges. The entire programme is run by trained volunteers and CMCA has been creating young active citizens for the last 14 years in nine cities and 28 villages in Karnataka. According to the findings of the study, 39 per cent of girls and 43 per cent of boys agreed that women have no choice but to accept a certain degree of violence; whereas 55 per cent of the youth agreed that women dress and behave in certain ways to provoke violent reactions from men. The study also shows alarmingly negative attitudes towards democracy and social diversity as, for instance, 67 per cent of college students agreed that India should have only one strong political party at the centre to rule the entire country, while 50 per cent of the youth showed intolerance towards migrant workers from other states.

Pinky’s case: When Pinky came to Dr Johari in 2006, her spine had a 25 degree bend. While under observation, it was noticed that her bend was static. But since 2012, the bend started progressing. In January 2012, it was 45 degrees and by November 2013 it progressed to 53 degrees. By November 2014, the bend had progressed to 82 degrees. Security concerns on R-Day E

very Republic Day, extra bandobast is made in the capital. Many a preventive measure is undertaken particularly in the parade area. All these years, the day has passed off peacefully — without any terror incident. This year, unprecedented security steps are being taken in Delhi. The Americans are asking for special security measures when their President will be the chief guest at the R-Day function. Along with the President, many Americans will be there. And hundreds of security men will accompany the President to Delhi. In fact, quite a few of them are already here, collaborating with our men. The American security folks also asked for the cancellation of the air display by our Airforce. India would not drop this item: It was a traditional happening. The Americans have reason to be worried about security. There is already warning by the US and UK that the ISIS terrorists group — is attempting a strike in the capital. The President is expected to visit Agra and he will be taking a separate route to the place. His final itinerary is not known, but Vrindavan and Ajmer have also been mentioned as places he may visit.

N the chilling winter of Delhi, finally the cat is out of the bag; the one time super cop of the national capital, Kiran Bedi, is named by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as party’s nominee for the coveted post of Chief Minister of Delhi. Going by the mood of the city state, it looks like Bedi would grab the position, last time held by Arvind Kejriwal, her erstwhile fellow crusader for the cause of ‘India Against Corruption’ along with veteran social leader Anna Hazare. Now, Bedi is waging a fierce war against Kejriwal to win the elections. Last weekend, I was in Delhi and realised that the contest is not between BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). It has narrowed down to a clash between two personalities; Bedi and Kejriwal. As the fog-clad city of Delhi was lazing out on Sunday morning, the news came in that the BJP has decided to field Bedi as the CM nominee. Though most of the people knew this, the day she was admitted to the partyfold in an extravaganza, some did think that the party leadership would wait for the election results before announcing the name of the chief minister. However, party chief Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi seem to be thinking on a different line. Naming of chief minister nominee is contrary to the party’s strategy used in the recent State Assembly elections, held after Modi took over. Whether Maharashtra, Haryana or Jharkhand, the party had not mentioned about its choice for the top post of the respective states. The party has also so far kept mum over its choice in Jammu & Kashmir; the state that has been brought under President’s rule as the elections produced a fractured mandate. However, for Delhi, the party high command changed its mind and strategy to bring in the former super cop on the centre stage three weeks before the voting. Why? There are many answers to the question. And each of it is enough to justify the change of mind.

jected as the prospective chief minister in December 2013 elections, however, he failed to register simple majority and thus, the BJP missed the opportunity to form the government. Moreover, Harshvardhan was later fielded for Lok Sabha to take on one of the most powerful Delhi leaders, Kapil Sibal. As the former won, he has been inducted in the Union government. Now he is not keen to go back to state politics. The party high command also does not wish to take risk once again and that too at the present critical juncture. The BJP, over the years, has failed to develop city-level leadership, perhaps because of its close proximity with the centre of power. Moreover, no local party leader could come up to the mark as the Capital State was under the rule of the Congress for 15 long years.

THINKING ALOUD Bharatkumar Raut

Thus, the aspiring leaders of the BJP either remained satisfied with the Delhi Municipal Corporation or looked forward to becoming members of Parliament. Though the AAP failed miserably to make any impact in the Lok Sabha elections in Delhi, the newly-born party is not down and out. All AAP leaders in Delhi failed to leave any mark during the Lok Sabha elections in Delhi and elsewhere. Kejriwal and all his lieutenants were defeated. However, Kejriwal still remains the centre of attraction for voters, particularly the youth and the poor of the city. The recent opinion poll revealed that more than 50 per cent Delhiites still want Kejriwal The first and foremost is that the BJP that re- to be their chief minister for the next term. cently won all seven seats of Lok Sabha with Kejriwal’s tenure of a meagre 49 days has comfortable margin does not have a candi- raised a ray of hope among the have nots of date who could establish his/her sway over the city. ‘Blessed is he who knoweth his life’s purpose’ E

VERY living being has a purpose in life and it is the knowing of that purpose which enables every soul to fulfill it. As it is said in the Gayan, 'Blessed is he who knoweth his life's purpose.' Be not surprised if you find many groping in darkness all through life, doing one thing or another, going from one thing to the other, always dissatisfied, always discontented. And everything they undertake remains without result. The reason is the absence of that knowledge, the knowledge of the purpose of life. Individuals apart, every object has its purpose. The mission of science is to discover the purpose in objects, and it is for this that science has come into being. Be it medical science or philosophy, all the various aspects of science are the result of the desire to discover the purpose of things. But the aim of mysticism is to find the purpose in the lives of human beings — the purpose in one's own life and the purpose in the lives of others. So long as man has not found this purpose, though he may seem to be happy or unhappy, in reality he does not live. For life begins from the moment a person finds purpose of his life. One finds people of great wealth, people who have position and every comfort and convenience, and yet who are missing something, missing the main thing which alone

can make them happy: knowledge of the purpose of their life. This is the very thing they miss. And yet at the same time mankind is ignorant of this. However unhappy a man may be, the moment he knows the purpose of his life a switch is turned and the light is on. He may not be able to accomplish anything at once, but the very fact of knowing the purpose gives him all the hope and vigour and strength to wait for that day. If he has to strive after that purpose all his life, he does not mind so long as he knows what the purpose is. Ten such persons

MATTER & SPIRIT have much greater power than a thousand people working from morning till evening not knowing the purpose of their life. Besides, what we call wrong or right, good or bad differs according to the purpose of life. The more one studies life, the more one realizes that it is not the action but the purpose that makes things right or wrong, good or bad. And as we progress we become more wide-awake, and the greater becomes the purpose before us. Beyond this is the purpose of all, the ultimate purpose. We begin our lives with an individual purpose, but we come to a stage

crowd that assembled for his meetings and the road-show on Monday, on the eve of his filing of nomination from New Delhi constituency only proves that he is still a leader to reckon with and has the capacity to overturn BJP’s applecart. The BJP high command seems to be concerned about the situation that may turn the equation against the party prospects.

Challenger for Kejriwal The party was thinking to create a challenger for Kejriwal. Bedi’s willingness to come to the BJP fold came as a sigh of relief for the leaders, who grabbed the opportunity with both hands and declared her without missing any more time. Another under cover reason for promotion of Bedi in the party’s top rank is the fact that she is originally from Punjab. Delhi has a handsome Punjabi origin population. To woo those voters it was essential that a person from their region is projected. Considering Bedi’s smart career graph in Police Service, her administrative skills and competence and her immense popularity among the middle class, she is a formidable candidate for the significant position. The BJP seems to be banking on Bedi to romp home safely. However, Bedi’s nomination prior to the voting has also opened a Pandora’s box for the party as many aspirants for the post are now up in arms against the party decision. They recall Bedi’s previous statements during Anna’s agitation in 2011 and later in which she had openly criticized the BJP including other parties. Her famous ‘performance’ act at the Ramlila Maidan has also not gone well with the people. The video of that ‘act’ is making rounds on U-Tube and other social media. It would be, thus difficult for the party high command to justify her entry and elevation within a period of three days. It does not go well with the party that has projected itself as a ‘party with difference’ and doing Charitra ki Rajniti. However, all said and done, the announcement of Bedi being the party’s choice for the chief minister’s post has taken the air from the sail of all other parties including the AAP as they have nothing to campaign against her. That is the situation that BJP high command was really looking for all this time. Twitter: @BharatkumarRaut where the purpose of every soul is one and the same. And that can be studied by studying the inclinations of men. Every man has five inclinations hidden in the depths of his heart. Being absorbed in the life of the world he may forget that ultimate purpose, but at the same time there is a continual inclination towards it. That shows that the ultimate purpose of the life of all is one and the same. The first of these five inclinations is the love of knowledge. It is not only intellectual and intelligent beings who seek knowledge. Even an infant wishes to know what every little noise is. Every child seeing a beautiful colour or line in a picture inquires about it. And therefore in greater or less degree every individual is striving after knowledge. No doubt in life as it is today many are placed in a situation where they never have a moment in which to gain that knowledge which they seek after. From morning till evening they have their duty to perform; they are so absorbed in it that after some time that hunger for knowledge is lost and their mind becomes blunted. There are many thousands of people whom life has placed in a situation where they cannot help but concentrate on some particular work and never have time to think about things that they would like to think about, that they would like to know. We have made this life. We call it progress, freedom, but it is not freedom of mind. The mind is imprisoned in a limited horizon and we call it a sphere. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

APROPOS your front page story 'Undercover commissioner busts touts outside RTO' (ADC, Jan 20), the intention of Transport Commissioner Zagade to get rid of touts outside RTO offices is laudable, but likely to be sabotaged; not so much by the agents as RTO officials themselves. It is a reality that the commission collected by the agents for their extra- services is shared with the concerned RTO officials. Naturally the latter will not want to forego this easy source of extra income. As was demonstrated recently in the BMC scam where junior engineers subverted the "transparent" online tendering system to still favour selected contractors, our government officials are expert at overcoming obstacles to corruption. Corruption is so ingrained in their psyche that it is almost impossible to contain it, let alone eradicate it. Our new government is making well-intentioned efforts to defeat corruption in the system, but I'm afraid eventually corruption will emerge victorious.

I'M glad that Transport Commissioner Mahesh Zagade has busted touts outside RTOs. An honest officer does not mind getting transferred as, wherever he goes, he will do his job sincerely and honestly. But why do we have just one officer who is known to be honest? Earlier we had Khairnar, Arun Bhatia and now Zagade? Do we presume other officials are dishonest and allow corruption, hence never get noticed? not use his (Anna Hazare's) photograph or his name in his campaigning. Upon learning that even his other former IAC ally Kiran Bedi had decided to take the political plunge, a visibly dismayed anti-graft crusader had remarked that she should have consulted him before taking the decision. Sources close to Anna Hazare disclosed that over the past few days, the former top cop of Delhi had tried to

But over the past few days, Bedi first tried to send an emissary from Pune to Ralegan Siddhi but Hazare refused to meet him. Finally she made noted water expert Vishwambhar Choudhary go to Anna Hazare's place, but that was of no use either. She even tried to call Hazare's secretary Dutta Awari,

but again Hazare refused to take her call. When newspersons sought his views, the social activist remarked that he did not want to talk about the 'dirty politics'. Taking noTes Who better to give us a few interview tips than working professionals who have been there and done that? The Woman’s World Team talks to a few working women to bring you a list of tips that will breeze through your next interview

>> Find out what women in the city have to say about successfully cracking a job interview

Keep it simple, silly According to Ananya Bahl, a media professional, minimalism is the way to go when it comes to dressing up for an important interview. “Don’t wear too much jewellery — accessorising simply with a smart handbag and a pair of matching pumps is a good idea. Avoid wearing figure-hugging dresses or traditional clothes. Instead, wear a formal outfit that you are comfortable in. Keep your makeup light and tie your hair up, because keeping it down can make you look unkempt,” she tells us. When we asked her about the most common question that women get asked at interviews, she was quick to quip, “Across all industries, as a young woman, one question that I’ve been asked a lot is Do you plan

on getting married soon?” Ananya thinks that it’s important to answer this question as honestly as possible and give your prospective employer a realistic idea of your goals and plans. This helps them to understand whether you will fit in with the future of the organisation. She tells us that several people lie or exaggerate certain details on their CV and think that they can get away with it, or score brownie points with interviewers. “Employers usually see right through this. If they ask you something about your previous job based on a lie that you’ve written on your CV and you’re unable to answer, you’ll come across as unreliable. So, your best bet is to be as honest as you can,” Ananya adds.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JANUARY 22, 2015 for the human mind to develop an opinion about a person who is walking towards them, even before they speak. With this in mind, dressing well plays an important role. Dress according to the job that you are interviewing for and keep your body type and personality in mind to ensure that you carry it off well. Of course, your hair and nails must be wellgroomed too,” she explains. According to Karishma, most interviewers want to know why you want the job and what your previous payscale was. “Always have a well-thought out answer for the former question and when it comes to the latter, don’t inflate your previous salary, because they probably will do a background check to tally your responses with your previous employer,” she adds. And, if you think that your qualifications are all you need to bag your dream job, Karishma has interesting insights. She tells us, “A common misconception that people have is that just because they are well-qualified, they will get the job. However, employers also focus on your personal presentation, ability to handle and deal with people, meet deadlines as well as street smartness.”

Keep it reAl For Charlene Flanagan, copywriter and conceptualiser, wearing something that is well-structured and in line with the work culture at the office is a good idea. “Dress for the position that you’re interviewing for and pick a comfortable, well-tailored outfit. After all, you don’t want to fidget in front of an interviewer, do you?” she tells us. When it comes to the most commonly asked question, Charlene is of the opinion that that being able to successfully answer why you’re right for the position is crucial. “Frankly, there is no correct answer. I often find that an honest approach works. Try and play up your achievements; talk about what you can bring to the table and never hesitate to mention a few of your weaknesses. This will give your interviewer the impression that you’re aware of your capabilities, but are willing to work on your limitations and better yourself as well,” Charlene explains. If you’re nervous about an upcoming interview, it helps to know that you’re not alone. “While I’m always nervous before an interview, having been to my fair share, I’ve realised that there is nothing to be nervous about. Trust your ability and give it your best. People always think that if they don’t crack an interview, they’re not good enough for the job. This is a misconception. Sometimes, things just don’t work out. It’s all about getting back up and doing better the next time around,” she adds.

striKe A bAlAnce Supriya Kapoor, a voice over artist, suggests opting for a semi-casual look at an interview. “I prefer this approach. It doesn’t make you look like you’re trying too hard, but at the same time, it shows that you are serious,” she says. Also, when an interviewer asks you why you want to join their company, Supriya feels that you should be as honest as you can with them. She also thinks that

You can try a basic, but fun hairstyle such as a French braid to keep things upbeat,” she suggests. A question she believes that is most commonly asked is ‘How are you going to contribute to the company?’ To answer it, she suggests that you ensure that you are aware of what you are capable. “Don’t hesitate to list out your capabilities, but don’t launch into a narcissistic rant about yourself.” she says with a laugh. Shavena also believes that people often believe you need a bulky resume to get a job. “Sure, you may have gotten very high grades, but what companies look for is experience. You also need to seem as though you are willing to get your hands dirty,” she explains.

Continued from pg 13 « it is a misconception that you should keep your answers brief during an interview. “You should open up to your prospective employers and give them an insight into your personality. Don’t stick to short, clipped sentences. Instead, give them a taste of who you are as a person,” she explains.

ElucidatE with ExamplEs Roohi Shaikh, a senior management associate, believes that while wearing formals is a given, use a light hand with your makeup. “I prefer keeping my makeup and styling simple, especially for an interview, because you might risk coming across as frivolous — especially if you’re interviewing for a junior position,” she tells us. “When it comes to the most frequently asked question, it has to be What is it that sets you apart and how do you do things differently? Honestly, I still have to crack this one because, I always end up stuttering! But, I think that examples of small situations or crises that I have dealt with will help as they give people an insight into how I think under pressure and how I use unique solutions to get out of sticky situations,” she adds. As far as being formal at interviews is concerned, Roohi thinks that this is an old, outdated approach and that employers are looking for a more casual conversation. “Interviewers usually want to see what you are like and how you would fit into their organisation. This is just as important to them as your skill set. So, it’s always better to just be yourself, because it helps both you and the company to understand if you would be a good fit for one another,” she adds as a parting note.

your future employers,” she says. When it comes to a question that she thinks interviewers are most likely to ask, she says, “It has to be Why do you want to work with us? And, while this can be a seemingly tricky question for most people, it is one of the easiest questions to answer. Simply be honest about why their company appeals to you.” But, she suggests that you avoid listing out their accomplishments in detail as this will only make you look desperate. Anjali also believes that you can be over-prepared for an interview. “I’d rather go in for an interview with the intention of having a simple conversation. Over-preparing can make you nervous and you might end up stuttering and stumbling through your interview.” she adds.

havE somE fun Shavena Meston, a law intern, has been for her fair share of interviews, and believes that while simplicity is essential, there is no harm in having some fun. “Unless the job demands no-fuss dressing, there’s no reason not to spice up your formal wear for an interview. push your strEngths Leya Elias, a PR professional, believes that a formal outfit, combined with a well-groomed appearance is the way to go. “Open hair and chipped nail paint are a big no-no and it will serve you well to look polished,” she tells us. When asked — ‘Why you chose to quit your previous job,’ Leya has an excellent answer that shows that you want to grow and learn more: “I always tell the interviewers why I am interested in the sector and how I want to grow in it while enhancing my skills,” she explains. According to Leya, the most common misconception that people have about interviews is that you can depend solely on your CV to get you a job. “This is far from the truth. A lot depends on the way you present yourself during an interview and having good recommendations and references is also extremely important.”

There’s absolutely no need for pretension. Most importantly, wear comfortable, formal footwear to avoid tripping on your six-inch stilettos in front of

>> When it comes to picking an outfit, semi-formal is the way to go

For Shraddha Varma, a budding PR executive, nothing tops comfort and simplicity. “You’re already nervous about the interview. So, there’s no need to add to it by getting worried about what you’re going to wear. If you can’t think of anything, pick a formal shirt in a solid, pastel colour and pair it with trousers. Wear comfortable shoes, but keep them simple and clean. Tie a sleek ponytail and keep your hair out of your eyes,” she says. When asked about the question she believes she is most likely to be asked in an interview, she says, “It has to be Tell me something about yourself. You never know where to start and where to stop!” You might think the interviewer is prepared, but Shraddha thinks otherwise. “They have so many other pressing matters on their mind, they may not even pay attention to everything that you say. Keep the conversation light, informative and simple.” she suggests.

arE you fit for it? PR professional, Alpua Turakhia tells us that the one question that you should be prepared for is, ‘Why do you think you’re fit for the job?’ It’s important to be prepared to answer this question — make sure you research the company and the job that you’re applying for and try to relate it to your personality, in order to find a connection. It’s also important that you’re confident when you’re answering this question. Because, as Alpua tells us, nervousness will always be an impediment during your interview. She adds, “Be confident and sure of your capabilities and believe that you are an asset to any organisation you join, and that you will be a success!” She also believes in following the classic adage when it comes to dressing up for the interview — dress for the job that you want. She suggests choosing a casual-chic look if you’re applying for a fashion-based job. However, if the job that you’re applying for is finance-based, you should pick business formals. She adds, “Modesty is integral, as a lack of it does not reflect positively.”

thE intErviEwEr is not going to grill you Several people worry about the interviewer asking difficult questions, as though he/she is interrogating you. However, Priyanka Rajwade, an associate creative director, tells us that you shouldn’t believe in this misconception, just like how you shouldn’t assume that you’ve got the job, just because the interviewer was nice to you. Also, remember that an interview is more of a conversation and Priyanka suggests asking questions. Another mistake that you might make is passing negative comments about your current organisation or showing dissatisfaction with your current remuneration when you’re asked about why you want to leave your current job — a question that she believes is quite likely to be asked during your interview. What you should talk about instead is wanting to grow in your field, your interest in the job that you’re applying for (make sure to explain why it interests you) and wanting to learn something new. When you’re dressing up, make sure not to put so much perfume that it smothers the interviewer — just wear enough to feel fresh. Smile, skip excessive makeup and be comfortable in what you’re wearing. If it’s a corporate interview, a formal outfit is the way to go. For other interviews, Priyanka tells us that you can never go wrong with a white shirt and a pair of denims.

>> DJ Maya gives us a glimpse into her musical journey

Mix it up Sara Shah asks DJ Maya Jane Coles about music, her debut album, Comfort, and what it’s like to rub shoulders with some of the best in a male-dominated music industry

M

aya Jane Coles is not your quintessential musician. The 25year-old British-Japanese artist is a DJ, as well as a producer, who only recently released her debut album, Comfort, and has already graced 14 magazines in eight different countries. With a profile that includes over a whopping 10,000,000 YouTube plays and multiple awards over the course of 24 months, Maya might just be the most sought-after DJ today. She is an efficient multi-tasker, who ensures that she goes that extra mile to write, produce, engineer, arrange, mix and perform every element of her tracks. Here are some of the excerpts from our interview with her, where she gives us the low-down on how she stays at the top of her game.

>> DJ Maya writes, produces, engineers and mixes her music herself

n Your debut album came out last year.

How has that worked for you? It’s been a very long process. I wanted to build a fan base and I wanted people to wait eagerly for what I was going to do before I released it. I didn’t want to make a debut album for it to just get lost. You see good artists just disappear on the internet all the time. n Up until recently, DJing was seen as a

more male-dominated profession. Do you face any difficulties as woman? I don’t and have never let that notion bother my work. I just keep doing what I love doing. n What inspired you to take up DJing as

a profession? Music has always been a huge part of my life and this field fit perfectly with my ambitions. n What’s the one project that is closest to

your heart? Well… all of them are. It wouldn’t be fair to pick just one and I can’t really think of one right now that stands out. n What has your Indian experience been

like so far? I love this country and I tried to explore as much of it as possible on my trip to Goa in 2014, where I was performing for the VH1 Supersonic show.

n You have achieved so much at such a

young age! And we all know how exhilarating it can be. Isn’t that overwhelming? It definitely wasn’t house and techno that got me into producing. When I was 13 or 14-years-old I loved hip-hop, which then lead me to fall in love with trip-hop/ dub and electronica. I never liked house music that much when I was younger, because all I’d hear on the radio were the really, really commercial tracks which didn’t appeal to me. When it came to dance and music, I was more into underground drum & bass/ jungle. It was only when I was about 17-years-

I am very honest and passionate about my work and my music, which is something that reflects on my set as well as in my performance on stage.

n Any words of wisdom for our upcoming

and aspiring DJs? Just continue to do what you are most passionate about and be honest about your work. Get inspired but, don’t get influenced. old and started I partying at the right places and hearing the deeper, intelligent side of house/ tech that I started getting into it. I started to hear music that I’d never heard before and it

really opened my eyes to the music scene. n What sets you and your work apart

from others in your field?

n What can we expect from you in the

year 2015? Obviously, the best of me. I hope to deliver an energetic, passionate performance and set.

Lash dyes look similar to eyelash extensions and do away with the need to apply mascara every day, giving you healthy, lush, inky-black lashes. Similar to how several people dye grey hair, you can dye your lashes and have deep, alluring eyelashes, permanently. But, the downside of performing this technique at home is that the chemicals can seep into your eyes and cause vision impairment and blindness. We vehemently suggest visiting a pro for this treatment, but we also think that it is one that you should avoid, professional or no professional.

While we love upcycling things and have spent many lazy Saturdays decoupaging our way to a snazzier home and wardrobe, a DIY approach isn’t one that we recommend when it comes to certain beauty procedures. Shirley Mistry tells you more

WaxIng Although a few people have mastered the art of waxing at home, or at least know how to work around the basics, if you have no idea where to start, it’s best to avoid performing your bi-monthly waxing session yourself. We aren’t dissuading you from waxing yourself just because the wax can get too hot. Burning yourself with scalding hot wax is certainly painful, but it’s the least of your worries.

Technique plays a key role when it comes to waxing, and everything from not keeping your skin taut enough to pulling too slowly, or in the wrong direction, can leave you with a rash. Burnt skin can peel off the top layer of your skin and incorrect technique can lead to a bad case of ingrown hair.

This look is a mixture of hits and misses. The long and short style is a problem here, but the soft peachy-pink colour of this outfit really compliments Amy’s skin tone. Her hair looks a little too limp and her makeup is unimpressive, but from the waist up, she’s sporting a pretty style. The shoes are too matchy-matchy, but we appreciate the minimal accessories and statement watch that she has stuck to.

Mixing prints may be in style, but we’re not fond of how this turned out. The striped skirt looks pretty until your eyes are (and they will be!) drawn to what looks like a haphazard splatter of print in the centre. The print is too busy for the wide stripes and the bronze blouse adds the chaos of the look. The only thing we really like is the sheer black dupatta, because even Mannara’s hair and makeup miss the mark here.

iving yourself a manicure, pedicure or a blow-dry feels great — not only is it easy to achieve salon-like results at home after some practice, it is also economical and eliminates the hassle of booking an appointment and awaiting your turn. But, when it comes to procedures such as waxing or hair colouring, we tell you why you should let a well-trained professional do the job.

Removing whiteheads is easy — all you need is a good face scrub and a little patience. But, when it comes to removing blackheads, cystic acne or zits that you can’t bear to wait and watch fade naturally, it is always better to consult a professional. While we don’t recommend touching zits, acne or boils in the first place, if you absolutely must get rid of them, don’t do it at home. Unsanitary equipment and amateur techniques can lead to inflammation and infections, making the situation worse than it already is. Book an appointment with your beautician and you can forget about shaky hands making the situation worse. Just sit tight and your problem will be taken care of.

they’re not flattering I am not a big fan of ponchos because they look slightly unflattering on most body shapes, unless you fit into a particular body bracket. But, they do have the benefit of being extremely comfortable and are cozy during winter. — Pranusha Chelikani, 23-years-old

I pick comfort first I’m a huge fan of ponchos, so I’m really excited. They are a great option for when you don’t want to dress up too much, but still want to look presentable. Since they are so easy to throw on (just like a comfy blanket!), they work very well for me. They also have a very native look and feel, so they are a good street style option and have a super boho look. — Mandsmita Gopal, 23-years-old

While I’ve been largely unimpressed by most hair products from Matrix, the Repairinside range was a godsend. I can’t say that I’ve got highly damaged hair, but they’re not kidding when they say that the shampoo gently cleanses and repairs your hair from inside out. The shampoo left my hair soft, silky and shiny — even before I applied the conditioner! After using the conditioner, the slight limpness that the shampoo caused was transformed into hair that seemed blowdried and party perfect, without half of the effort that it usually takes. The leave-incream may make frizzy hair smoother, but I stopped using it after a while because I didn’t see too much of a difference in my hair. The shampoo and conditioner, enriched with arginine and soya oil, make for a power packed combination that I’m already looking to try again. skIn tag rEmoval Skin tags are small, soft folds of skin that can be found near your eyelids or your armpits. They are completely harmless, cause no discomfort and the only reason people remove them is cosmetic. But, before you take a pair of scissors to trim them, let us warn you that they aren’t like the skin around your fingernails and can’t be cut off. Doing this can cause excessive bleeding and can even lead to infections. While several home-remedies suggest using dental floss and even duct tape (yikes!) to pull skin tags out, you can cut a blood vessel in the process. So, it is a much better idea to visit a dermatologist who will be able to remove skin tags safely and control bleeding if the need arises.

We love this look! We wouldn’t usually pick a dress with front pockets as one we liked, believing the style is best suited to shirts. However, with the retro print, great colour combinations and pop of red on the anklelength dress, it really works. The cinched waist adds definition and the minimal accessories help keep the focus on the dress. We love how the big hair adds to the retro theme of the entire look.

«

«

There’s absolutely nothing about this look that we like. The heavy print is enough of an issue and it gets even heavier towards the border of her skirt, making it seem like she’s fallen into a field of flowers — and not in a good way. The dress fits her well, but the embellished straps take away from what could have been a decent bodice.

Priyanka usually looks fresh-faced and pretty, but her makeup for this look doesn’t sit well with us, which is a shame because we really like the rest of her look! The tea-length skirt flows down prettily from her cinched waist and the fitted black boat-neck top is the perfect match for it. Even her printed shoes are perfect!

At a recent office party, we were supposed to bring dates, and since I am single, I asked a close male friend to accompany me. Now, my boss thinks that he hit it off really well with my date, when in fact, my friend found him annoying and over-friendly. He pretended to enjoy the conversation just because he knew that it was my boss whom he was talking to. Now, there’s another party coming up and my boss has been dropping hints about looking forward to meeting my friend, who, unsurprisingly, doesn’t want to attend it. I don’t know what to do. stop being so anxious about this situation. Whether your boss gets to hang out with your friend or not isn’t something that should affect your professional relationship with him. If your friend really doesn’t want to meet him again, your best bet is to dilly-dally. Tell your boss that your friend is busy or tell him a few unfavourable stories about your friend (check with your friend to make sure he’s okay with this) — this should lower his excitement about meeting him. If you think that your boss is authoritative enough to hold this against you, then the only thing you can do is request your friend to come for one more party, but tell him to avoid pretending to like your boss’ company and nip this budding bromance in the bud.

Once you have picked and arranged the paper according to how you’d like it to look, ensure that all the sheets are of the same size. If they aren’t, trim them to ensure that your planner has even edges.

Apps to the rescue D

Is it difficult for you to stick to all the to-do lists on your refrigerator, while ensuring that your children finish their chores at the same time? Dev Goswami tells you about some applications that can make it easier to organise your tasks

on’t worry, we’re not going to give you a long list of applications that will help you make a to-do list. Instead, we’ve rounded up applications that will help you get right to the root of your organisational woes. From recipe finders to applications that help keep your family up-to-date with household chores, we’ve got all bases covered. So, take a look and start downloading those that suit your needs.

#4 tiE it up

Use a heavy duty punch machine to make two holes along the folded edge or spine of your notebook. Pass a thick cord, ribbon or yarn through these holes to form the binding and secure it tightly. You can also pass beads or sequins through the thread to create an embellished spine.

Epicurious: For party recipes As far as recipe ideas go, Epicurious is by far one of the best applications available. The application allows you to search for recipes from cookbooks, food magazines and top chefs simply by using keywords. However, our favourite feature is the option to search according to the ingredients that you have on hand. The free application will come up with a list of dishes that you can prepare using the ingredients that you type in. Where www.epicurious.com, Apple App Store (free) and Google Play Store (free)

irEWardchart: Get your children to help with chores Persuading your child to help with household chores or getting them to finish their homework is a mammoth task. We’re all aware that using challenges and games is an easy way to get them to do their chores, but do you really have the time to use this approach on a daily basis? No? Then download this handy, award-winning application called iRewardChart. It lets you set tasks for your children, which are synced to the application on their phone. You can track their progress and award them with stars in a weekly chart. These stars mean that they get a reward, which can be an extra hour of television or extra pocket money. It’s a great application to help motivate your children to help you out with chores, while inculcating a sense of responsibility. The free version supports only one child and four tasks a week. You can make in-app purchases or buy the premium version for unlimited usage. Where Apple App Store (free, with in-app purchases) and Google Play Store (Lite: free; Premium: `220)

coupondunia: stay within your budget If saving money is a priority for you, this application is a must-use. We weren’t too kicked about CouponDunia at first, but once we discovered the sleek interface and handy features, we couldn’t stop gushing about it! It gives you deals for a range of online stores as well as restaurants and lets you search for deals by category, as well as by location. You can even call a restaurant directly to place an

Use stencils or free-hand drawings to personalise the cover. We used a stencil and acrylic gold paint to mark our initials on the cover, but you can let your imagination run free and decorate with illustrations, stickers and pictures. On the coloured sheets of paper that you inserted earlier, jot down motivational quotes, draw doodles or stick plastic CD covers to create small pockets where you can store small notes or receipts.

LocaLoyE: services on call A relatively new application, LocalOye is a well-designed, extremely handy application that lets you search for services such as plumbing, electrical work, appliance repairs, house-keeping, pest control and carpentry. Once you enter the category of the service that you’re looking for, you can choose from a list of set tasks and the application will put you in touch with plumbers, electricians or carpenters who are willing to visit your address, along with a price quote for the tasks on offer. Simple to use and with a wide range of services, this application is one of our favourites. Where www.localoye.com and Google Play Store (free)

pEnuLtimatE: the joy of doodling Penultimate is an application made by Evernote that is, sadly, only available on iPad. We hope it’s available on other platforms soon, because it combines the joy of doodling with jotting down to-do lists, drawing quick sketches for when you want to play around with your décor, as well as drawing maps, which you can then share with your friends. The reason Penultimate finds a spot on this list is because of its versatility — it’s just like pen and paper, except that it’s virtual. Where Apple App Store (free)

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JANUARY 22, 2015 >> If you’re spending all your time wondering how best to make your relationship work, it may be time to call it quits

« SoS: Solve our SiTuaTion! Think you can fix our readers’ complicated problems? Read on...

Gynelle Alves

Afternoon Despatch & Courier

I was engaged to be married last year and Saria was to be my maid-of-honour. But, with much heartache, four months later. I had to call it off. I was heartbroken... Within the same week of my big fat let-down, after a whirlwind 2-month affair, Saria was engaged herself! And I was now to be her maid-of-honour...

Inspite of my own misery, I was happy for her. She has been desperate to get married! So, I put on a smile and got into gear.

Time To move on?

1) Your relationship has reached a point where communicating with each other is something that you don’t enjoy. You can go for days without talking to each other, and it seems as though it’s the easier option. a) True. b) False. 2) Even the sound of him breathing or sneezing gets on your nerves now. Getting irritated and picking fights with your partner has never been so easy! a) True. b) False. 3) While you may have conjured up plans of marriage and kids with your partner in the past, just the thought of spending your entire life with him seems daunting and gloomy now. a) True. b) False. 4) Intimacy, both physical and emotional, is not an option. a) True. b) False. 5) You frequently dream about being

single or about flirting with your handsome, new co-worker. a) True. b) False.

6) You prefer spending more time alone than before. a) True. b) False. 7) You’ve realised that you and your partner are around each other purely because it is more convenient to do so. a) True. b) False. 8) You no longer do the things that you used to love doing together. a) True. b) False. 9) You are thankful for the silence that has taken over at the dinner table every night. a) True. b) False. 10) You’d rather go out with your girlfriends than stay at home with your partner. a) True. b) False.

Then, as Saria started making plans... It was like it was MY wedding all over! I don’t mean that it brought memories...

You might go to great lengths to keep your relationship alive, but there comes a point when you might have to re-evaluate whether it’s really worth it. Sara Shah suggests you take this quiz to find out if it’s time to part ways

Mostly As It’s time to let go of your relationship and your partner. Things are no longer as good as they were and they haven’t been for a while now. If the time you spend with each other is usually spent in silence, then you obviously think you have nothing worth sharing with your partner. We’re not saying that your relationship is doomed just because of a lack of communication. At times, it just indicates that things have gotten slightly stale. But, if you’d rather spend your time on your phone or watching TV, then it’s a sign that you’ve lost interest in your partner all together. Don’t be afraid or reluctant to end your relationship, because you will be doing both you and your partner a big favour.

situations. How do I deal with my troubled best friend? — Shiwini Singh, Dadar Dear Shiwini, We understand how hard it is to see your best friend go through something as painful as a divorce. We even know that it is quite difficult to understand or relate to her situation to know what she’s going through. What you need to do, is stop sharing your own relationship problems

It was like she had stolen every single idea I was working on! I just kept quiet... I mean, she is my friend...

But then... When I saw her dress, I lost it! Even the dress was an exact copy of mine!

Mostly Bs If things between you and your partner have never been this good, then you had no reason to take this quiz. However, if you think your relationship has taken a turn for the worse, understand that every relationship is different. Look for other signs, as it could just be a minor misunderstanding. But, if your relationship no longer makes you happy, don’t be hesitate to cut the cord.

« Dear grace, i have a problem... Dear Grace, My best friend and I are extremely close and have stuck together through thick and thin. She recently went through a messy divorce, which has left her heartbroken, and changed her perception of relationships. So much so, that every time I share my relationship woes with her, she comes up with ridiculous notions about me being cheated on or lied to. While she is my best friend and I love her dearly, I can’t help but lose my patience in such

I mean that everything from the card designer and colour theme, to the caterer and venue, honeymoon!... was mine!

So there I was in the maid-of-honour’s dress which was to be hers at MY wedding and there she stood... in MY dress!

with her for a short while or until she has healed from her break up considerably. Possibly, it might aggravate her pain to a higher level, and her delusional assumptions about your relationship might end up creating problems for you that weren’t even there in the first place. Help her get through it by distracting her with other activities and try to have a little more patience while speaking with her. Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in

“Am I allowed to be really mad and irritated? She is just ignoring the fact! I can’t do this... My heart and head are in such a bad space and seeing this... seeing basically my wedding is hurting so much! I really don’t want to do this anymore. Help!” — D a) You don’t have to do it. Just tell her that it is bringing up too many memories and too much heartache. Heal. b) She may be doing the copying because of all the rush. Just hang in there and get through it. It will eventually be over. c) It really sounds as if your friend holds you up as someone to emulate. Take it as a compliment even if she doesn’t realise it. LAST WEEK: N should pick option A: If he is putting you in a place, it doesn’t mean that you have to stay there!

Kejriwal, Bedi, Maken file nominations for Delhi polls NATION

NEWS IN BRIEF

PM to launch ‘Beti Bachao’ campaign from Haryana

Government's ambitious 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' campaign to save and empower girl child will be launched on Thursday by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Panipat in Haryana, the state with the lowest sex ratio. The state government has decided to observe a holiday in all the government and non-government schools on the day. The campaign will be implemented in 100 districts of the country, including 12 of Haryana where the number of girl child is dismally low.

EW DELHI: Three key players — AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, BJP's Kiran Bedi and Ajay Maken of Congress — besides a number of other heavyweights on Wednesday filed nominations for the February 7 Delhi Assembly polls as campaign for the elections picked up momentum. Bedi, the Chief Ministerial nominee of BJP, and Maken led roadshows from their constituencies before filing the nominations while Kejriwal went straight to the election office. Kejriwal had put off filing of his nomination yesterday after he failed to reach the election office on time. Bedi will contest from BJP stronghold of Krishna Nagar while Kejriwal will seek reelection from prestigious New Delhi constituency where he had defeated Sheila Dikshit by over 22,000 votes in the last election. "Our fight is not against

any person or political party. It's against corruption and price rise. Last time the people of Delhi had given us a huge mandate. I hope they will give us the full mandate for running the government for five years," Kejriwal told PTI. Before filing nomination, Bedi stoked a controversy by putting her party's scarf around the statue of freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai in Krishna Nagar which drew sharp criticism from Kejriwal. Reacting to the incident, Kejriwal said that she should not 'saffronize' freedom fighters. The former IPS officer also met tea and newspaper vendors in Krishna Nagar before taking out her roadshow and enquired about the kind of issues they were facing. Bedi was accompanied by Union Minister Harsh Vardhan, Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay and Rajya Sabha member Vijay Goel. Promising to bring a

new kind of politics, Bedi said if voted to power, she will come out with a "white paper" for every government department and initiate a "security index" to ensure better policing. "Once we are in power every government department will give us a white paper enabling us to find out where we are and where are we beginning from. To find out the pending issues, newer challenges. The reports will be put on the websites of the departments. We will give Delhi the government it deserves," she said. After filing his nomination, Maken attacked Kejriwal and Bedi, accusing them of using Anna Hazare to fulfil their political ambitions. Maken, who is the Congress campaign committee chief, also said that AAP and BJP are two sides of the same coin as anti-Congressism "is their thought". PTI

BJP spent over `61cr for Modi’s 3D poll campaign

N

EW DELHI: BJP spent over Rs.61 crore on the unique 3Dstyle poll campaign of its Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi in the run up to the 2014 Lok Sabha election. It also shelled out a whopping over Rs 304 crore on other audio-visual media campaigns for the same electoral battle. The figures are part of the election expenditure details furnished by the party to the Election Commission (EC) recently. The party has said that in all, it spent over Rs 714 crore for political campaign during the Lok Sabha polls held last year and the Assembly elections in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim. While the party said it spent a total of Rs 51,36,00,000 for the 3D Prime Minister Narendra Modi

campaign of Modi's rallies, it also paid a licence fee of Rs 10 crore for the launch and execution of this modern multi-media campaign where Modi was beamed to the public in a virtual projection of his three-dimensional imagery. BJP has been the first to use this technology to execute political and poll-related campaigning in the country and Modi successfully used it first during his Gujarat Assembly election campaign in 2012. The party said it spent a total of Rs 3,04,50,58,995 (over Rs 304 crore) as expenses on media advertising in print and electronic media, sending of bulk SMSes, campaigning through cable, websites and TV channels for the party in the run up to the general election which gave the party an absolute majority

power at the Centre. The data also said a total of Rs 77,83,75,655 (over Rs 77.83 crore) was spent on the travel expenses, specially by air, of its star campaigners and party leaders like Modi, Rajnath Singh, L K Advani, M Venkaiah Naidu, Amit Shah and Arun Jaitley, among others. On publicity material like posters, banners, badges, stickers, arches, gates, cutouts, hoardings, flags and buntings, among others, the party said it spent over Rs 14 crore during the same election period. As per rules, political parties are required to file their election expenditure statements within 75 days of Assembly elections while the deadline in case of Lok Sabha polls is 90 days. BJP submitted this data after the deadline period to the EC.

Can Innovation In Bonds Unlock Money For Growth? Infra sector needs Rs. 30 lakh crore, banks Rs. 5 lakh crore in the next five years

By A Business Reporter

I

ndia’s financial sector has diverse goals to accomplish, such as generating humongous capital to fund long-term growth, creating sophisticated and safe tools for a rapidly globalising corporate sector, providing more investment avenues to middle-class savers, and ensuring financial inclusion for a vast number of the unbanked. Clearly, banks alone won’t be able to deliver on all these objectives. CRISIL believes India needs out-of-the-box solutions to generate the money so needed for economic growth. According to our estimates, says Crisil “just to build out infrastructure, India will need Rs.30 lakh crore over the next five years, while banks will need another Rs.5 lakh crore for their capital requirements till 2019”. This is why a vibrant corporate bond market has become an imperative. Says Raman Uberoi, Business Head, CRISIL Ratings, Large Corporates & Corporate Affairs, “Innovation is a critical ingredient in developing bond market. Continuous innovations in the corporate

bond market will eventually open the floodgates of capital for key sectors of the economy. It will enable infrastructure projects to take off, deepen the financial sector, and improve access to credit for SMEs.” Crucially, innovations bring together issuers and investors who have different risk thresholds, facilitate long-tenure funding that banks are unable to offer, make issuances cost-effective, and provide adequate risk-mitigation tools. As an asset class, corporate bonds have delivered higher returns over the past decade compared with government bonds and state development loans. Additionally, there wasn’t a single default for papers rated AAA, and the average 3-year default rate for papers rated AA by CRISIL during this period was just 0.11%. Says Pawan Agrawal, Chief Analytical Officer, CRISIL, “In the current fiscal, we have seen many innovations such as the issuance of the first commercial-mortgage backed securities (CMBS), one of the largest future-flow securitisation transactions, introduction of resets in credit enhancement for securiti-

sation transactions, and renewed focus on partial-guarantee mechanisms. This is also the first full year of operations for infrastructure debt funds (IDFs) through the non-banking finance company route.” CRISIL believes a few things need to be simultaneously ensured to keep up the pace of innovations. These are scaling up of existing innovations like IDFs and CMBS, maintaining focus on systemic stability, setting up of new vehicles such as bond guarantee funds, and building investor comfort with new instruments. “Stakeholders need to make constant efforts to expand both the capital pool and investor base, and make the corporate bond market compelling for long-term global investors,” Uberoi said. This will require ironing out a clutch of other issues, too, including ensuring healthy price discovery that is now precluded because of the overwhelming footprint of government securities, enabling more lower-rated issuances, removal of trading curbs on EPFO and banks, and offering better exit opportunities to investors.

Sea Change In Investor Sentiment Towards India India has always had strong potential, and now the new leadership of the country has given investors the confidence that we will act to realise this potential...foreign investors are keen to be a part of it, says ICICI Bank MD & CEO, Chanda Kochhar By Barun Jha

H

23

elped by the government's consistent steps to improve business environment and remove growth hurdles, investor sentiment towards India is seeing a sea change and would soon yield significant investment flows, top banker Chanda Kochhar said in Davos. "Yes, there is a sea change in investor sentiment towards India. India has always had strong potential, and now the new leadership of the country has given investors the confidence that we will act to realise this potential," the ICICI Bank chief said. Kochhar, who has been attending WEF Annual Meetings in Davos and other global summits for a long time, said the confidence in the India growth story is seeing a major uptick this year and would soon

start yielding results. "India is a large consumption market and is expected to get bigger – making it an attractive destination for foreign companies," Kochhar told PTI in an interview. According to her, the country is also now focusing on infrastructure development. "It is not just power and roads but urban development, water, sanitation, smart cities, railways, rail and port connectivity and so on - these can be big opportunities for foreign investors. "I believe that India's long term growth story is strong and foreign investors are keen to be a part of it," she added. Asked about World Bank chief Jim Yong Kim's recent remarks that India is one of the few bright spots in an otherwise mediocre global economic outlook, Kochhar said that hearing such views is "quite common" today. "There is a lot of foreign interest again in India with the new government in place. We believe that the Indian economy is expected to grow at a healthy rate over the next decade, driven by robust growth in domestic consumption and investments. As I mentioned, I think everyone, both domestic and foreign, would want to participate in this growth," she added. On whether the banking sector

and its corporate clients are satisfied with the pace of the new government delivering on its promises, Kochhar said: "Seven months is a short time... But I think that the Prime Minister and his government have articulated their commitment to growth-friendly policies, administrative efficiency and ease of doing business, as well as ensuring macro-economic stability and maintaining fiscal discipline”. Kochhar, who heads the country's largest private sector bank, said the government has recognised the importance of foreign capital and its role in bringing in technology as well as international linkages. This is reflected in decisions like allowing foreign investment in defence, increasing foreign ownership in insurance (subject to parliamentary approval) and 100% foreign direct investment in railways and addressing challenges in the coal sector and land acquisition procedures, Kochhar added. "I think the corporate sector is very encouraged by the approach of the government and the steps it is taking. As these steps bear fruit and cash flows start coming in, we will start to see the next investment cycle," she said. (PTI)

Indian CEOs Second Most Optimistic In The World, Says Survey By A Business Reporter

I

ndian CEOs are the second most optimistic in the world when it comes to their companies' growth prospects in the next 12 months and are planning aggressive hiring during the same period, says a survey. Their bullish outlook contrasts with decline in overall optimism among business chiefs globally, according to the annual CEO survey of global consultancy PwC, re-

leased here at the WEF Annual Meeting 2015. "In India, hopes are running high, with reform-minded Prime Minister Narendra Modi now in power," the report said. At 62%, the number of Indian CEOs who are very confident about their company's growth in the next one year is up 13% from last year and is 23% higher than this year's global average (39%), the survey found. Besides, 59% of Indian CEOs believe that global economic growth will improve in the next 12 months, the highest across the world and much above the global average of 37%, PwC said. The report said a massive

84% of India's CEOs believe there are more growth opportunities for their company today than three years ago, the highest percentage in the world. Interestingly, when asked to name the countries most important to them for their growth in the next 12 months: 48% of CEOs in India said it is the US, and 26% said China. Globally, however, CEOs have turned less optimistic about the global economy, although their confidence in growth of their own companies remains stable. Globally, 37% of CEOs think global economic growth will improve in 2015, down from 44% last year. Significantly, 17% of CEOs globally believe global economic growth will decline, more than twice as many as a year ago (7%). Around 63% of Indian CEOs plan to enter into a new strategic alliance/joint venture, and a high 51% said they plan to outsource a business process or function. India's CEOs also believe that there are more threats to the growth of their company today than three years ago. The top potential economic and policy threats highlighted by Indian CEOs are: inadequate basic infrastructure, over -regulation, and government response to fiscal deficit and debt burden. Bribery and corruption were cited as business threats by the highest number of CEOs. They were followed by volatile energy costs and availability of key skills.

Binny Sharma’s housewife act

25

Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JANUARY 22, 2015

Binny Sharma hails from Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh but her family has settled now in Ahemadabad. She was the female lead in 'Sanjog Se Bani Sangini' and she was also a contestant of the reality show Dance India Dance-2 which aired on Zee TV where she was a finalist. Now her show ‘Hello Pratibha’ goes on telly waves on January 27. We spoke to the attractive Binny about her new show By Sandeep Hattangadi

Tell us something about your character Pratibha in the show? Pratibha (36) is based in Jhansi and a mother of two grown-up children. Family has been her sole priority as she has spent the 16 years of her married life devoted to her husband, kids and in-laws. And she hasn’t done any of this because someone’s asked her to. She’s done it whole-heartedly because she believes that’s the right thing to do. Before her marriage, Pratibha was a girl filled with hope, ambition and talents of her own and today is a middle-aged housewife faced with an identity crisis. She has lost the ability to say ‘No’ to her family, no matter how whimsical or unrealistic their demands. All she seeks is to be valued by her people for what she is and not for what she does for them. Her struggle is for things as basic as identity and existence as she longs to be acknowledged as a person. How will she learn to assert herself with her own loved ones without losing out on the bonds she’s cultivated with such care over the years? How will she slowly gain respect in the eyes of her own family? That’s how my character graph is in the show.

Did you have any reference point for portraying Pratibha? I have come across many Pratibhas in my life including friends, relatives and colleagues but the most inspirational reference point has been my mother.

Are you close to Pratibha’s character in real life? Yes. Quite so. Although I am not a housewife yet but there are a lot more hidden talents or pratibhas in me including dance which is of utmost importance to me and also I am not a doormat like her in real but I am bold and bindaas and I always speak my mind.

By Sandeep Hattangadi

AB TV is all set to take the level of fun and excitement to new heights with the advent of a new light-hearted comic show ‘Peterson Hill’. The story is inspired by a quaint little picturesque railway station in a small town set amidst the lush mountains of Shimla. The show revolves around the lives of the simple people of the town and the family of the station master who manages Peterson Hill. In this unique offering, actor Rohit Roy will be seen enacting the role of Kishore Chadha who by profession is the station master of Peterson Hill, a man with a golden heart, a complete family person who believes in the simplicities of life. Down to earth by nature, Kishore believes in doing good deeds in favor of humanism and mankind. The station master is married to Pinky Chadda, played by Sucheta Khanna who tells us that this role is different from her previous role in SAB TV’S popular show ‘Lapataganj’ and that she had acted briefly with Rohit “before but it was good to be working with him again”. Pinky Chadda is very happy with her simple life and is proud of her husband’s morals. Peterson Hill is a hearty humorous family entertainer and shall hit the tube from January 26 at 10.30 pm, Monday to Friday. Rohit who has had a glamorous image accepted this role. He says; because he wanted to do something “different’” and waited for “more than three years” to get a role like this “in which he has done an understated comedy role for the first time and is happy that SAB and Anooj Kapoo, the head honcho of SAB TV selected him for the role”. DWYER FEELS HIL IMPROVED STANDARD OF INDIAN HOCKEY

The Dabang Mumbai hockey franchise organised a hockey clinic for boys and girls at the Mumbai Hockey Association Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday in an effort to promote the game among youngsters. There were over 100 children and around 30 coaches who participated in the clinic. Dabang Mumbai take on Punjab Warriors in their first match on Friday.

By Neil Joshi

M

UMBAI: Australian veteran with 291 international caps, Jamie Dwyer feels the two years of Hockey India League has beefed up the Indian performance at the international stage. Dwyer who is a part of the Punjab Warriors franchise since two years said he was quite impressed with the impact of the league has left on the Indian players and has noticed a sharp improvement of the Indians on the world stage. “The quality of the game is outstanding and it is international hockey out there and it is good for the Indian players. They have improved a lot in the past two years. I think Hockey India is a big factor to that and its showing the world to good hockey,” said Jamie Dwyer. Comparing the popular Dutch with the Indian league, he said the Indian league has overtaken the Dutch league and opened the gates for international players to showcase their expertise. “The quality is

definitely up there. It is better than the Dutch competition. We used to always rate the Dutch competition as the best in the world but now this is the best I have played for sure. Last year, some of the goals, penalty corners were unbelievable hockey in patches. I expect it to get better this year,” he added. Dwyer himself has been recuperating with a ligament tear in a toe, which he claims to be a rare injury which kept him out of the game for four and half months. “I haven’t prepared too well. I have had four and half months of hockey with an injury. I have just picked up the stick after 4 ½ months, so I dont expect to be my best straight away. Hopefully, last week of the competition I will be playing my part for the team. Had a torn ligament in my foot. I just started running a month a go. I had a good time away thinking about my future whether I can play for the Australian team.” Meanwhile, Warriors coach Barry Dancer said that he was pleased with the continunity the team has

Indian hockey is on the rise: Halappa M

UMBAI: Notwithstanding the absence of a regular national hockey coach since the exit of Australia's Terry Walsh, selector Arjun Halappa sounded upbeat here about the Indian squad's future following its good show over the last yearand-a-half. "Some things are not in our control. We should not take it in a negative way. Indian hockey has been doing very well in the past 11 to 18 months. These things will be taken care of by the administrators. Let's be positive," said Halappa who is representing Dabang Mumbai as a player in the Hockey India League (HIL). He also said that Indian captain Sardar Singh is there to see first hand the home country talent on hand in HIL along with selectors and interim coach Roelant Oltmans who is also Director, High Performance at Hockey India. "Roelant (Oltmans) is there. We are there. Sardar is there leading a side (Delhi Waveriders)," he pointed out.

India look to sort out batting woes before Hobart game By Chetan Narula

S

YDNEY: Having tried quite a few permutations and combinations in the two losses so far, the Indian think-tank seems to have settled for Virat Kohli at the No.4 position to hit the right balance and stay alive in the ongoing tri-series. Mahendra Singh Dhoni and company suffered an embarrassing nine-wicket loss against England with a spineless batting display which saw the team fall to 153 in 39.3 overs. Facing a mustwin situation against Australia in their next ODI on Monday at Hobart, Dhoni is till worried about the batting depth. "We have to make the middle order and the lower order stronger," said Dhoni post the Brisbane ODI explaining the move to bring Kohli at the No.4 spot. "Ravindra Jadeja is also not

there. If Stuart Binny is playing, it might still be okay (for Virat to bat at three) because we all know he can bat a bit. But with Axar Patel and R Ashwin both in the playing eleven, Suresh Raina and I are playing at numbers five and six. After that, there is not much of batting." "With Virat batting at four, if wickets fall early, he will go in quite early, say close to the 12th or the 13th over and even from there onwards, he can create a partnership. He can bat from one end and we can all look to give him company from the other side," he added. Kohli has shown uncharacteristic shot selection in both Melbourne and Brisbane. On both occasions, he had a swift backward movement on the very deliveries he got out, dismissed for 9 and 4 respectively. It remains to be seen if the management will deem this move a failure after two

matches and restore him to the spot where he has scored 14 of his 21 ODI hundreds. The problem however has been compounded by the poor showing of the other batsmen. While Kohli needs to be given time to adjust to this new position, the likes of Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane need to make good use of the opportunities presented to them. The left-hander has been a firm selection in the team for his freestyle approach. But he has only two fifties in overseas ODIs since winning the Man-of-theTournament award in the 2013 Champions Trophy. The bowling is also a big area of concern as India stare at an early exit from the tournament. Their two opponents will meet again in Hobart on Friday and the winner will nearly confirm their spot in the final in Perth on February 1.

Halappa said the Test series win over Australia Down Under, a first for Indian hockey (after winning the Asian Games gold for the first time after 1998 to qualify for the Rio Olympic Games), augured well. "As Hockey India selector I can say we have beaten Australia in Australia in the Test series. That jinx has been broken. We had never done that before. These things are getting better. "We can't straightaway say we are becoming world no. 1. It's a step by step process. (Junior) Players like Harmanpreet and Santa Singh can get lot of positives from this league," he said. Halappa said he keeps his selector's hat behind when he takes part in HIL as a player. "It's a new challenge and I have to fight for my place. I am putting in my effort. I can see some players also while they train and play and their approach. But right now I am enjoying as a player. If I get into the selector's mode, the players will be too reluctant to speak to me," he said.

witnessed over the two years and with no changes to the line-up from last year, he feels they have a bright chance to lift the cup. “Continunity for us is an important factor. Continunity for our playing stuff and support is valuable so we are able to build on the success of last year. We haven’t had the disruption of new people coming in, so we expect we will be better having the continunity of last year,” said Dancer. The Australian coach added that a similar league in Australia was out of the question due to lack of corporate support. Australia has three world titles to their credit and are the current world champions. “I would have loved it to be played in Australia but unfortunately, Australia doesn't have the corporate support that India has. India is quite unique with the amount [money] behind this league and is the highest in the world. Earlier it was the Dutch league. For five weeks, the players are well supported and have better salaries than Europe,” said the 62year-old coach from Queensland.

Vessaokar strike lifts Companeroes to victory M

UMBAI: Companeroes Sports Club dished out a solid fighting display to clinch a narrow 1-0 win against Karnatak Sporting Association (KSA) in an Elite Division match of the MDFA (Mumbai District Football Association) League played at the Cooperage ground on Wednesday morning. Enterprising midfielder Joshua Vessaokar with rasping long range effort scored the lone goal of the match in the 76th minute to help Companeroes snatch a close win and collect the full three points. Later, Companeroes Nigerian recruit Stephen playing his first game was unlucky as his try came back off the upright. Earlier, Companeroes also missed a golden chance to take a first half lead but Jordan Braganza failed to convert a penalty. r. Cyrus Poonawalla and family dominated the Villoo Poonawalla Indian Oaks race day on Sunday. The Poonawallas had one more race on Sunday: The Gool S. Poonawalla Million. The Indian Oaks was won with the greatest ease by Tiger Tops which is trained by Pesi Shroff. The horse is owned by Haresh Mehta, Manav Mehta, Rakesh K. Jhunjunwalla and Pallon S. Mistry. Just when Tiger made its move in the stretch, it became apparent it would win. It could have won by a street. The privately foaled filly,

gave every indication it is a solid stayer. And it is clear as daylight that it is made of classic stuff. It has a big chance in Mallya’s Derby. Pesi Shroff had another clear win on Admiralty. Favourite in the race (6 to 4) it beat 11 other 3 year olds. Trevor was on it. The horse is owned by Dr. and Mrs. Vijay Mallya. The horse is bred at Mallya’s own stud farm. A horse which won easily with Srinath up was Zander. The horse, owned by Jaydev Mody, is trained by C.D. Katrak. Wait for some more decisive wins by top-class horses from Katrak’s stable. Rafael Nadal survived a massive scare before he won against American qualifier Tim Smyczek 62, 3-6, 6-7 (2/7), 6-3, 75 at the Australian Open on Wednesday.

Nadal, Sharapova Survive Scares At The Australian Open

ELBOURNE: Spanish world number three Rafael Nadal survived a massive scare before winning a gruelling fivesetter with American qualifier Tim Smyczek at the Australian Open on Wednesday. The 14-time Grand Slam champion prevailed 6-2, 3-6, 6-7 (2/7), 6-3, 7-5 in 4hr 12min and will now play unseeded Israeli Dudi Sela in the third round. Nadal looked to be suffering from stomach cramps during the match and called for the trainer and doctor early in the third set. He took a tablet and continued on but at one changeover motioned to his player box that he was experiencing a stomach ailment. He was physically ill on the court. "For me after a tough period of time out of competition in the last seven months and just playing a few matches, today was a little bit humid and I felt very tired after the first set and for the whole match," he said. "I tried to have my best attitude and always with the support of the fantastic crowd." The Spanish great appeared to be making some headway when he broke Smyczek's serve to lead 5-3 only to give back the service break with a double-fault on break point. The marathon 81-minute third set went to a tiebreaker which the American qualifier captured seven points to two. Nadal regrouped and sent the match into a fifth set and he tried to fight off his health problems and the tigerish

The breakthrough came in the 11th game of the final set when Nadal broke Smyczek's serve and then wrapped up the victory on his fourth match point to his immense relief. "It was a very tough night for me. I first want to congratulate Tim because he's a gentleman for what he did in the last game," Nadal said. "Not many people would have done what he did at 6-5 in the fifth set after four hours." A spectator yelled out as Nadal served at a crucial moment, but Smyczek allowed the serve to be retaken. Nadal said he suffered

from stomach cramps after the first set. His shaky condition showed when he committed an uncharacteristic 53 unforced errors and double-faulted three times on break points. He lost his serve five times. FLUSTERED SHARAPOVA SURVIVES SCARE AS MURRAY CRUISES A flustered Maria Sharapova survived a huge scare to advance at the Australian Open with Andy Murray making lighter work of the gruelling Melbourne conditions to keep his Grand Slam dreams alive. The second seeded Russian had a meltdown as the

heat was turned up and had to dig deep to save two match points before staging an epic comeback to beat courageous compatriot Alexandra Panova 6-1, 4-6, 7-5. British sixth seed Murray had a much easier time, cruising into the third round with a 61, 6-3, 6-2 drubbing of local hope Marinko Matosevic. Other seeds progressing included men's seventh seed Tomas Berdych, 24th seed Richard Gasquet and women's 10th seed Ekaterina Makarova. While the searing 42 Celsius (107.6 Fahrenheit) heat of last year has yet to materialise in Melbourne, temperatures reached 32 C and players, including Sharapova and Murray, draped ice towels around their shoulders at the changeovers. At the 2014 tournament extreme heat forced organisers to suspend play for several hours following days of complaints about

"inhumane" conditions which left some players fainting and vomiting. Sharapova, who can unseat Serena Williams as world number one if she wins the title, wilted badly after winning the opening set, firing a slew of unforced errors that almost saw her on an early plane home. "I didn't actually want to be out here for two-and-ahalf hours but that's sometimes the way it goes on days when you're not playing your best -- sometimes it's good enough just to get through," she said. "I was one point away from being out of this tournament twice today and not playing my best tennis so I'm just happy I was able to win that last point." The five-time Grand Slam champion, red-faced from the heat, went down 4-1 in the deciding set and looked out for the count, but rallied to save two match points when down 4-5. Sania, Paes make it all-win day

MELBOURNE: India enjoyed an all-win day at the Australian Open tennis Grand Slam after Leander Paes and Sania Mirza sailed into the second round of their respective men's and women's doubles events here today. Sania and her Chinese Taipei partner Su-Wei Hsieh, who are seeded second, defeated the Argentine-Swiss combine of Maria Irigoyen and Romina Oprandi 6-2 6-0 in just 48 minutes to advance. The Indo-Taipei team will now be up against the Canadian-Polish pair of Gabriela Dabrowski and Alicja Rosolska. In the men's doubles event, 10th seeded Paes and his South African partner Raven Klaasen edged past the American duo of Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram 6-4 7-6 (6) to enter the second round. They will now face the winners of the match between Americans Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey and the Italian pair of Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini.

Mumbai FC rope in ex-India player Ambrose as U-17 coach M UMBAI: I-League outfit Mumbai FC has appointed former India and Maharashtra player Alex Ambrose as coach of the the Under-17 team that will participate in local football tournaments. Ambrose, who also played for Mumbai FC from 2007 to 2011, is an AFC 'C' licence coach and a Graduate Coach

of the Manchester United Soccer Schools. He coached at Manchester United Soccer Schools in India and UK. "I am really excited to be back at Mumbai FC although as a coach and not a player. It's a new venture and I am looking forward to succeed as a Mumbai FC coach," said Ambrose, who donned the national jersey from 1998 to

2004, today. The 32-year-old wants to mould the youngsters into top class players who would fit into the club's scheme of things. "I plan to follow the club philosophy with the Under- 17 team. I am very familiar with it. I want to put forth my own ideas and bring more value out of the young players," he stated.

and Barcelona's 470 million euros. "Wanda Group's capital contribution ... Will allow Atletico Madrid to significantly shore up its balance sheet, as well as accelerate the growth of its brand globally," Atletico said in a statement on its website. The deal involved opening three Atletico Madrid football schools in China, sponsorship deals and a possible tour by the club to China later this year. Also, Wang and Atletico will combine to invest USD 34 million for a youth center in Madrid to foster Chinese soccer talent, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Wanda Group is also funding a youth training project which already brought 90 young Chinese players to Spain and the number is expected to reach 180 in 2017. Wang, 60, ranked 42nd in

Forbes' richest persons list with his fortune estimated at around USD 18 billion, said his cooperation with Atletico is based on friendship with the club's chiefs and his own dream to raise the game of young Chinese players. "What we are doing is to raise the level of Chinese game," said Wang. "Hopefully, three to five among those 90 young players will play for top European clubs in the future and in five years, Spain-trained players will fill the Chinese team in the Asian Cup," he said. Wang was once owner of the Dalian Wanda football team in then Chinese first division league, the predecessor of the current Chinese Super League, but sold the club in 2000 over disillusionment with a league rife with corruption and scandals.
