ake, music, dance, flowers, celebrations and lots of love was what Monika More's first day in Class 12 was made up of, after the tragic incident of January 12 in which she lost both her hands. “I was welcomed by all my teachers and friends when I reached college. The classroom was decorated and a cake was waiting for me. There was music and my friends were dancing. All of this was for me. This was so unexpected. I am overwhelmed,” said this 16-year-old student of SNDT college at Ghatkopar. “I realised how much I was missed by my teachers and friends. I went to each class and met my friends. Then I went to the staffroom and thanked all the teachers who have given me so much support. Everybody clicked photographs with me. It felt great to be back to college, to be back with my friends. Everybody celebrated my happiness,” she added. Monika's cousin Ganesh Hegde said, “She is very happy now that she can get back to the way she was. After her accident, we were worried if her college and friends would treat her the way they used to before the accident or will there be a change in behaviour and attitude. But today we realised that nothing has changed. For her friends, she is the same old Monika.” “After a long time, Monika and I had dinner together at her home last night. It was so much fun. I was happy to see her excited about the life that lies ahead of her,” added an emotional Ganesh who said that, at times, the feeling is so overwhelming that he is unable to control his tears. “Today there were no lectures, only celebrations. But from tomorrow I will be attending lectures like the others. I am looking forward to it,” said Monika. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

department annnounced here today that they would go on an indefinite strike from August 1, after the new district of Palghar comes into being. Talking to PTI here today, Thane Zilla Mahasul Karmachari Sanghatana executive president Bhaskar Ghavale said that in 2013, revenue department employees had gone on strike, after which the government assured that their demands would be looked into. Though the strike was called off, the government did not do anything regarding long pending demands. He said that as preparation to the August 1 strike, employees began a "pen down" strike from July 14, 2014. In a related development, the Maharashtra government is all set to appoint present commissioner of Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation Suresh Kakani as officer on special duty to oversee official work at Palghar district and he may also named as the district's first collector. he Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) has already issued several warnings to colleges against looting money for admissions, but engineering colleges continue to flaunt the rules and demand donations from aspiring students. As the engineering colleges across the country open for admissions, city colleges have been charging between Rs 5 – 8 lakh per seat. Parents fret that it is difficult to book an engineering seat without paying donations. On July 16, the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) declared the first CAP (Common Admissions Process) round for engineering students. Students who were not allotted seats in their preferred colleges started applying to colleges in the management and minority quotas. They soon learned that they would have to pay a tidy donation for the seats. The colleges demanded twice the amount from students who did not fall under the management and minority quotas. Speaking to Vaibhav Narwade,

member of the Maharashtra Universities and Colleges Teacher's Union (MUCTU), he said, “Colleges are duping students. The DTE should take strict action against such colleges. Most Engineering colleges claim that they are clean and not under the scanner like other colleges, yet they demand more money for seats. Parents should oppose such activities and complain to the university and DTE.” On May 9, the ACB arrested the principal, and his personal assistant (PA), of Guru Nanak Khalsa College at Sion Circle for accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000. The prin-

cipal, Ajitsingh Amarsingh Theti, was arrested from inside his cabin after his PA Nikita Hiten Vaidya was first arrested while at her desk outside his office. The ACB had warned parents against booking seats in exchange for money and advised them to lodge complaints if such situations arose. The ADC spoke to Pradeep Sawant, greviance cell and senate member of the Mumbai university, who said, “Students and parents should not fall prey to such activities. They should lodge a complaint with the students' grievance cell of the university. The MU will provide its full support to the students and make sure that such colleges are appropriately punished.” The ADC also spoke to S K Mahajan, director of the DTE, who said, “In 2005, the state government had declared a three-member committee comprising the university and DTE officials. This committee takes care of the grievances of the students. Once a complaint is lodged, the complainant and the college authorities are called for a meeting.”

bserving that the government had rolled back the steep rail fare hike, the Bombay High Court today disposed of a PIL which challenged the increase in ticket rates announced by Railway Ministry in June this year. "The prayer urging the government to roll back the fares has become infructuous as the ministry has gone back on its decision and decided to hike only marginally the ticket rates," a bench headed by Justice Abhay Oka observed while disposing of the PIL filed by Mumbai Grahak

Panchayat. As regards another prayer in the same PIL regarding appointing an authority to decide the fare structure, the bench asked the petitioner to make a representation to the ministry and gave them liberty to approach the High Court if their plea was not considered. Yet another PIL on the same issue was adjourned to August 19 as the petitioner, Ketan Tirodkar, was not present. Both the PILs sought a stay on the suburban rail fare hike done last month. How-

A

n accused on Sunday evening injured a lady police constable by biting her right hand before fleeing the spot. The lady constable was trying to pacify the tussle between the accused and another woman, when the incident took place. Lady constable Gangabai Patil and her collegue con-

stable Kiran Shinde were patrolling the area of Bhaucha Dhakka in South Mumbai, when they received a call from the control room, regarding a fight that had taken place between two people near a petrol pump in the area. When Patil and Shinde intervened in the fight, the lady accused, identified as Shobha Sawant (35), strug-

gled to beat another accused, Ramesh Patru. However, Sawant could not hit back at Patru, as Patil had caught her tightly. In a bid to flee from the clutches of Patil, accused Sawant injured the constable by biting her right hand. Patru was arrested by Shinde and immediately a police team from Yellow Gate police station was

called for help. Patil was taken for medication by the police. On Monday morning, sleuths from the Yellow Gate police station arrested Sawant from her relative's residence in South Mumbai. Both the accused were produced in the court after being arrested under relevant sections of the IPC. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

Youth rapes minor girl A

youth was arrested for allegedly raping a 12-yearold girl living in his neighbourhood in a slum area of the city, police said yesterday. The 21-year-old accused, identified as Nanhe alias Ketan Kadam, who has past criminal record, called the girl in his chawl situated on

Ambedkar road of Khopat area here on the pretext of giving her money to buy snacks, Naupada police station senior inspector S S Pagare said. He then locked his chawl from inside and raped the girl, Pagare said quoting a complaint filed by the victim's mother.

As per the complaint, the accused allegedly raped the girl on July 13 and 15 and threatened her with dire consequences if she revealed the offence to anyone, the police official said. The scared girl kept mum after the incident, but after mustering courage she informed her family members yesterday following

Crooked officer collected property tax from illegal buildings M

aharashtra government told the Bombay High Court today that it had suspended an officer of Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation for allegedly collecting property tax from 600 builders in respect of unauthorised constructions and pocketing the money.Milind Sawant, the officer, was not authorised to collect the tax. He was suspended on July 4 this year,

the affidavit filed by Pratibha Kiran Mangudkar, Under Secretary, Urban Development Department, said. The charge sheet against Sawant had been submitted to the General Administration Department and it will be served to him once state government sanctions action, Mangudkar said. The affidavit came in response to public interest liti-

gation filed by Ved Prakash Rohira, an activist, alleging that illegal constructions had mushroomed in Ulhasnagar, one of the satellite towns on Mumbai's outskirts, due to corruption in the civic administration. Sawant, then the Deputy Engineer in Ulhasngar Municipal Corporation, is now with the Collector's office at Nashik.

Government pleader Abhinandan Vagyani said the PIL may be disposed of as the officer had been suspended. However, the division bench headed by Justice Abhay Oka said mere suspension was not enough and the court would prefer to wait until further action was complete. The hearing was adjourned for two weeks. — PTI

minor boy was arrested yesterday for allegedly slashing a senior schoolmate with a blade in the premises of his school in Malad (E) over a petty confrontation that they had earlier had, said the police. According to the Dindoshi police officers, the minor accused, a student of Class 8, attacked Nishant Shukla, an SSC student, with a blade near the washroom of Fatima High School last morning. “Nishant had intervened in a fight between the accused and another schoolboy a few days ago. This enraged the accused who attacked Nishant,” said Subhash Dafle, Senior Police Inspector at the police station. Soon after the incident, the accused was caught by

the school staff and handed over to police. The boy was arrested under section 307 (attempt to murder) and was immediately sent to a remand home as the police are not permitted to keep minors in custody. Nishant was given stitches in a private hospital and was not in a condition to talk to record his statement, the police said. The police further revealed that the incident happened at the time of school recess. The accused tried to flee, but the other student who were present caught him and handed over to the school staff. “We will record Nishant's statement once he discharged from the hospital to find out if he was attacked for the same reason that the accused claims,” the police added.

measures would you take,” said the division bench of justices V M Kanade and P D Kode. Seeking government's reply by July 24, the court also appointed senior advocate Jamshed Mistry as amicus curiae to assist it. The orders came on a PIL filed by Dr Sarita Parikh, who said that on an average 10 people die every month in Thane district due to snakebites, but the government does not offer any help

to curb the problem. She said her organisation had made portable ventilators as victims of snakebites develop breathing problems, but the government did not give any subsidy for the project. She claimed local politicians were harassing her NGO which was trying to help locals deal with snakebites menace. Government pleader G W Mattos said the state was taking enough measures and it had acquired sufficient number of ambulances to rush the victims to hospitals. If the petitioner had any suggestions to offer to improve the ways to deal with the menace, she can submit a representation to the Ministry of Public Health, which would consider it, he added.

Gutkha worth Rs 3.65 lakh seized in Kashimira By Suresh Golani

C

ontinuing its crackdown against the illegal trade of banned tobacco, a FDA team and police personnel from the Kashimira police seized a huge consignment of gutkha worth more than Rs 3.65 lakh after intercepting a tempo on the Mumbai–Ahemdabad highway on Monday. A vigilance team stopped a suspiciously moving tempo which was found to be loaded with banned guthka products of various brands. The consignment was headed to Mumbai from Gujarat. “The tempo driver – Deepak Bachan Pal (27) has been arrested and booked under various sections of the IPC and under relevant regulations of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011," said Food Inspector Manek Jadhav.

Lost again and again... Continued from pg 1 « Surat police officers reached the PCO from where Gurmeet placed the call to her mother, but they were unable to find her. They collected the CCTV footage from the railway station and found that the girl had a mobile phone in her hand, which she did not have in Mohali, and she had her Ipad. On June 22, the Surat police were alerted when Gurmeet activated her Ipad. Surprisingly, this time, they traced her to Versova in Mumbai. The Surat police immediately contacted the Mumbai Crime Branch who traced the location to Sunshine Building in Lokhandwala. But the investigators hit a dead end again when they arrived at the building but could not find the girl despite conducting a manual search and surveying the surveillance footage of the building. In the meantime, the mother of the girl, Sukhdeep Gaur, who is a school teacher in Mohali has been living in Mumbai for the last two months in the hope of finding her daughter. According to her, Gurmeet is her only daughter. Her husband divorced her long ago and she has been taking care of Gurmeet since. She said that these jumps across three states, from Mohali to Surat to Mumbai, seems like someone is misleading and taking advantage of her. “Her last known location is Mumbai, so it cannot be ruled out that someone has led her here on promises of roles in films. I will be here till I get more information about my daughter,” said Sukhdeep Gaur.

FSI bonanza for Mumbai... Continued from pg 1 « the total area of the plot. The move is likely to benefit about 2,200 projects that were originally sanctioned an FSI of 3. As per the fresh directive, all such projects will soon avail the additional FSI of their stage of construction, if the government has its way. “Since elections are around the corner, the government has planned to increase the 3 FSI granted to the Mumbai city and raise it somewhere between 4 and 6. This will be a big boost for the development projects of old MHADA colonies which are in a dilapidated condition and are in immediate need of redevelopment

rather than repairs,” said an official from state housing department. Sachin Ahir, Minister of State for Housing, Slum Improvement, House Repairs and Reconstruction, said, “In Mumbai, the demand and supply in the housing industry has to match. We have seen that the people need houses here. Private builders are making houses which are quite big for the common man to buy. So affordable housing is also important for us. Keeping all this in mind, the government is planning to make an announcement of raising the FSI from 3 to FSI 4.” On October 5 last year, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan had granted permission to modify norms for hiking FSI for redevelopment of 5,000-odd old buildings in MHADA colonies in Mumbai from 2.5 to 3. In May 2011,while modifying development control regulations for increasing FSI for redevelopment of cessed buildings to 3, the state government had imposed a rider that in the case of ongoing schemes, it could only be availed if the construction of the rehabilitation building had not progressed beyond the plinth stage. A developer had challenged the condition on grounds that it was unconstitutional and ultra vires. The court ruled that extra FSI could be availed in the ongoing incomplete redevelopment projects (where full occupation certificate has not been granted) on submission of structural stability certificate by a certified licenced engineer.

K

eeping to his work, senior Congress leader and Industries Minister Narayan Rane submitted his resignation to Chief Minister (CM) Prithviraj Chavan yesterday. Rane has repeatedly stressed that he is still in the Congress party, however the news is making the rounds that he is desperately hunting for better options. Rane announced that he would be quitting the post of State Industries Minister in Chavan's cabinet, but would continue to be a part of the Congress party. Although the senior leadership had been trying to make him reconsider his decision, Rane had remained firm on his decision. But after quitting the post, he launched a direct attack on the CM and alleged that his faulty style of functioning had led to the party's defeat in the Lok Sabha polls. Speaking at a press conference at his official residence, Rane slammed Chavan. He said, “Decisions were not taken, and if taken, they were not implemented. The lack of governance in the state has made people angry as was evident by the Lok Sabha poll results. Pub-

lic work was not getting done. Hence I resigned. I am unhappy in the Congress fold,” he said. “I was told I will be made CM in six months, after quitting the Sena. But in nine years the promise has not been kept. Not a single associate who came with me to the Congress was given either a minister's post or any government-run corporation. For nine long years I kept quiet. If the party contests the forthcoming Assembly elections with the same leadership, the debacle is inevitable and I don't want to be a partner in the defeat at the Assembly polls and that's why I have quit,” he added. Rane made it clear that “the CM has informed me he will speak to Sonia Gandhi and revert back. I will announce my next move after that.” Rane, who had joined the Congress after he quit the Shiv Sena in 2005, has been at loggerheads with the state Congress leadership for a while now and has

repeatedly criticised its style of functioning. The matter took a turn for the worse after Rane's son Nilesh lost the Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg Lok Sabha seat to the Shiv Sena. Rane feels that Congress' alliance partner, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), conspired to ensure his son's defeat. The former Shiv Sainik claimed that the CM had failed to serve the people of the state, while stressing that no attempt is being made to curb corruption in the state and that people are not getting justice. Rane added that he does not see a good future for the Congress in the upcoming elections. Rane had served as a Chief Minister for nine months in 1999 while in Shiv Sena, when the Sena-BJP alliance government was in the power in the state. Soon after joining Congress, he was inducted as a minister in the Vilasrao Deshmukh government.

TIPPLING CAN ALWAYS LEAD TO TOPPLING

Bharat Ratna recipient Professor C N R Rao today said the countrymen should not tolerate substandard education

“W

e live in a highly intolerant society. Whether it is about religion or caste, we are intolerant of something or the other. Then why are we tolerating mediocrity in education? I think social revolution in India should be (about) better quality of education. We should all come together and demand better quality education from schools, colleges and the government," Rao said here. It was his first visit to the metropolis after receiving the highest civilian award of the land. He was speaking after a civic felicitation at the hands of Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan. Young graduates were making a

lot of money, but had stopped applying their minds, he said. "I am ashamed to say that I come from a city (Bangalore) which has now become number one in ranking for the number of rapes and suicides. It is unbelievable. 3,000 suicides in the last year. People are making a lot of money but they have lost their minds," he said. Rao also released a study on the status of science education in India's colleges, titled 'Whither science education in Indian colleges? Urgent reforms to meet the challenges of a knowledge society', on this occasion. The eminent scientist, who has written the foreword to the report,

highlighted the need for promotion of science as a career. "It is time the new government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a serious note of the languishing science education and initiate comprehensive reforms," he said. Science does not depend on government grants and it would grow whether or not the government gave funds, he said. He also said that instead of focusing only on textbooks, children should be made aware of the vast cultural history of India and value of the contributions of scientists. "Blindly learning from textbooks means nothing," he said. PTI

Ponder awhile... The discovery of nuclear reactions need not bring about the destruction of mankind any more than the discovery of matches — Albert Einstein

Price scenario as bad as ever here is little doubt that Prime MinT ister Narendra Modi is doing good work abroad: He has met top world leaders and had discussions with them. It was certainly not just weather they talked about: "They must have discussed important matters with regard to bilateral relations. Prime Minister Modi has invited Russia's Putin to visit the nuclear unit in Tamil Nadu which has been built with Russian assistance. It is evident now he is taking a big part in international politics and attracting greater attention from various advanced countries. He will deal with United States, but it looks like he is in no hurry to do this. While the BJP can claim substantial achievements in the international field, the aam admi's bid for survival at home is becoming grim. Every food item costs more now: the cost has doubled or trebled. Basic necessities of life like milk, vegetables, grains, eggs, meat and pulses have gone beyond the reach of the middle class. When this is the case, one can imagine the terrible plight of the poor. It would have been better perhaps if the prime minister had taken measures to keep prices down instead of meeting Russia's Putin. The price of some essential article or the other keeps shooting up and the government just does not know how to bring it down. What is happening is the basic necessaries of life are going beyond the reach of crores of people. We must of course have international achievements but what is more important is the government should first solve domestic problems.

find it strange that New Delhi is not seriously considering the pros and cons of what happens once the American and NATO forces reduce their presence in Afghanistan only in the shape of a few thousand troops. US Secretary of State Kerry has visited Kabul to devise the policy after the withdrawal. But New Delhi is not in the picture. No doubt, the Afghans have the best goodwill towards India because it has helped them to set up hospitals, schools and build roads. Yet Islamabad, which considers Afghanistan its “strategic depth”, wants the country to be its satellite. New Delhi has tried to persuade Islamabad to let Kabul be independent and sovereign, but Pakistan has not bitten the bullet. It all started when the Soviet Union sent its forces to Afghanistan to impose their ideology on a state which was saturated with Islamic ideas. America used the opportunity to bleed the Soviet Union by training the fundamentalists in Pakistan to make inroads into Afghanistan without considering the longterm repercussions. And once the Soviet Union started retreating from Afghanistan, Washington lost all interests in the territory leaving behind arms and other equipment in the field itself. The fundamentalists used those weapons to propagate their strict and disciplinarian interpretation of Islam.

Joint front to defeat Taliban needed Islamabad had in its mind the armed and trained Taliban against India and there are numerous examples to testify that insurgency in Kashmir were nothing but a byproduct of a bigoted stance to shut out the participation of non-Muslims in governance, however unwittingly demanded. I recall when I met in Kabul a leader from the Masud group, antiTaliban in ideology and pro-India in its approach, he told me that the road to Kabul goes through Islamabad and if New Delhi was really interested in stopping the tide of fundamentalists, it should have a serious dialogue with Pakistan. It is a pity that India refused to have any truck with Gulbuddin Hekmatyar who was Pakistan’s confidante. No doubt, he is a nasty person to deal with, but if we had fixed our eyes on the situation a decade later, we should have swallowed some of his anti-India rhetoric. But all this is now history. The two countries, particularly India, should formulate some strategy to thwart the Taliban on-

slaught, which is bound to take place once they are sure that the Western forces are not in a position to match their weapons. The most disconcerting aspect is the birth of Tehrik-e-Pakistan Taliban (TTP), an indigenous growth which is in a position to strike wherever it wants and whenever it wants. It has proved this time and again. The recent attack on the Karachi airport is an example. However, the Karachi happening is only the symptom, not the disease. The disease is fundamentalism which, to the horror of even middle-of-the-road Pakistanis, is spreading rapidly. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has opted for an easy path. He has been negotiating with

BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar the Taliban to accommodate their aspirations. The reason why the talks have not gone very far is because of the Taliban’s insistence on Pakistan giving proof of their sincerity of taking measures like closing institutions for female literacy and making hijab (veil) as a compulsory outfit for women in Pakistan. No doubt the next step they will demand is a ban on women car drivers, just like in Saudi Arabia. Music has already been sacrificed on the altar of extremism. The old-time singers or instrument players have no market in Pakistan. How ironic that they come to India to earn a livelihood. The otherwise liberal Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was the person who began placating the fanatics. He is the one who started a government stipend for the head maulvis in mosques and declared Ahmediays as nonMuslims. Today, the graves of Ahmediyas are being dug and the remains of whatever is left is thrown out. The Pakistan establishment did not think even for a minute in humiliating Sir Zafrullah Khan, a prominent Ahmediaya who

od is a spirit, and everything created by Him is composed of spiritual energy. It was in His image that He called into existence spiritual beings in numbers so vast that no figures devised by mankind can even begin to express them. In what manner the infinitely great and almighty God created the spirit world is something that you could not understand if God was to explain it. Knowledge of this is not necessary to mankind and is of no value to the good of your soul. It is sufficient for you to know how you stand with regard to God's Creation, in order that you may learn why you were placed on Earth and what tasks you have to fulfill during your stay here. To teach you these things is the purpose of what I am about to tell you of the Creation. God did not create the world with one stroke, nor six strokes as the false religions teach. God is the great Architect Who, with strict observance of laws conceived with infinite wisdom, builds up little things into large ones, simple things into complex, and out of a single seed, produces the tree with its millions of seeds. He builds up the family,

turned the tables against India at the UN on Kashmir. In fact, the complaint which Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru made at the UN about “Pakistan’s aggression” in Kashmir went against New Delhi largely because of his efforts, blessed by Britain. The past, however bitter, should not now be recalled at a time when both India and Pakistan have a few options except to organise a joint front to defeat the Taliban. New Delhi should not forget that the Taliban would be at the Attari (Amritsar) border if they are not defeated in Afghanistan itself. If it is embarrassing for the two countries to talk about their strategy in the open, they can establish a back channel as they have done in the case of Kashmir.

not by calling into existence parents and children simultaneously, but by first creating the parents and endowing them with the power of reproduction, so that in time the family may grow through the birth of the offspring, and out of this family new ones may come forth without limit. In a similar manner God proceeded with the creation of the spiritual realm. Every law that you find on Earth exists in the spirit world also. I will emphasize this because it

MATTER & SPIRIT is the basic truth underlying all knowledge of the Spiritual Dimensions whether you believe it, or whether you reject it with a smile of disbelief. You may shake your head in disbelief, but it is true none the less, that the law which prevails in Nature on Earth, with all living things, namely, reproduction by the union of the male and the female, must and does apply to the same extent in the spiritual dimensions. Matter is merely the incarnation of the ethereal, and therefore merely another state of spirit, for which the spiritual laws are not

The repercussions of Taliban gaining an upper hand, first in Afghanistan and then in Pakistan, are so inimical to the defence and development of India that it should go out of the way to befriend Pakistan on a joint approach towards Afghanistan. Since no serious talk takes place between the two because of Kashmir, they should keep this problem aside and allow the two army chiefs to sit across the table and devise a long-term strategy which would enable Afghanistan to stay independent. Of course, this means that Islamabad would have to change its policy and not consider Afghanistan their “strategic depth”. This is in Pakistan’s own interest. The manner in which the Taliban have begun to count in the affairs of Pakistan should be a warning that the Taliban would not allow Pakistan to be a liberal Islamic state. New Delhi should take the initiative to get America on board regarding the anti-Taliban policy. If and when they are defeated in their designs both in Afghanistan and Pakistan, they would cease to be a force which is beginning to loom large in other Islamic countries where the Taliban-like thoughts have begun to assert themselves. It is a pity that India is not seeing the writing on the wall. At least Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said to be a strong ruler, should pick up the threads with Nawaz Sharif on his matter. Both hit it off well when they met in Delhi. Nawaz Sharif has even said so in a letter to Modi. Can things in the same vein go ahead in the interest of policy to contain the Talibanisation, already quite assertive in Pakistan? abrogated, but applied in a way that is adapted to matter. Just as in material Creation where there are males and females in every species, so too there are male and female spirits in the spirit world. Among spirits there are as many males as there are females, a female spirit being mated to each male, according to God's law. They are invariably perfectly mated, and find their greatest happiness in mutually supplying each other's limitations and in faithful collaboration in the task that God has assigned to them. Such spirit couples that were created for each other are known as "duals", a term intended to express, "two who belong to each other". These are the matches that were made in Heaven. None but God, not even the "Son of God" known to you as "Christ", whose real name was and is Immanuel, is exempt from the union of the male with the female. To all created spirits the words apply, "Male and female created He them", and "Be fruitful and multiply". Immanuel is the highest Spirit that God could create. He is in every way God's most perfect image, so far as any created spirit can possess the Creator's perfection. He is not God, as is so generally taught today by the false religions, but the first created "Son of God", and as such, His highest and most perfect Creature. — Raphael

Safety norms not in place IT is very sad that a major fire broke out on the 21st floor of a chic commercial building on the Link Road in Andheri (W), in which a fireman lost his life while nine of his colleagues were injured. It was a good effort by the Navy and Coast Guard helicopter who had to be called in to evacuate the group of firefighters stuck atop the commercial building. However, the firemen got trapped on the rooftop after managing to vacate all civilians from the tower. What is inexplicable is how the BMC gave an NoC to the building when it did not have water hydrants to douse the fire. An inquiry must be held and action must be initiated against the BMC officers who gave the NoC. — K V Raman, Malad

'INFERNO at Andheri High-Rise' (ADC, Jul 19), is read with a lot of anguish and concern considering the callousness of the authority managing the safety system of this high-rise commercial complex. Once again, it has been found that although a proper fire fighting system was in place and certainly seen and approved by the BMC at the time of issuing the occupation/completion certificate (OC/CC), the incident took place. MY heart grieves for the fireman who lost his life in the Andheri tower inferno trying to save those trapped while himself becoming a victim of the blaze. The nation salutes your bravery. Most NoCs in high-rise towers can be obtained by greasing the palms of the officials, the price for which is then paid by innocent people who lose their lives in such tragedies. Our country has several such towers that have flouted safety norms and it is time for setting up a committee by the government to not only identity but rectify the abnormalities. Builders and government officials who have given various permissions and false certificates should not only be penalised but put behind bars. This recent incident should act as an eye-opener and safety norms must be addressed so that such incidents do not occur in the future.

More than 4,000 parents and relatives of children shouted slogans against the school's administration and demanded that the police arrest those involved in the rape incident without wasting time. The rape has raised questions about the safety of India's school children and sparked nationwide outrage over rampant sexual violence against girls and women. The school has refused to take responsibility for the crime. Thus the child is left in the lurch and unless such protests takes place in the open the truth will not come out. SHAKY GROUND: Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma, who is reportedly dating Virat Kohli, has accompanied him on his tour to England, where Kohli has been giving bad performances. FOR a great batsman who, experts feel should be the captain of Team India, Virat Kohli's scores of 1, 8, 27 and a golden duck in the four test innings he has played so far clearly point to a new distraction coming from his Bollywood girlfriend, Anushka Sharma, whom he has taken along with him to England. In the ongoing second test, our team would have posted a much bigger target than 319 runs for England if he had scored some useful runs like Vijay, Jadeja and Kumar. Kohli needs to realise that he is losing his concentration due to his girlfriend and should pack her back home before the next test. The lady also will do well to leave him alone in the interest of the game and his reputation. — Dr V Subramanyan, Thane

IT has been observed that In-

dian vice-captain Virat Kohli continues to give a bad performance in due to his affair with Bollywood actress Anushka Shrama who is allowed to accompany him on the England tour with the Indian cricket team. I strongly feel that the BCCI has made a blunder by allowing the Bollywood actress to go on the England tour which has affected Virat Kohli's concentration and performance and has become the liability for the team. Anushka Sharma must be sent back to India and in future, no actress must be allowed to accompany a cricketer on a foreign tour. It is hoped that Virat Kohli who is the best batsman the Indian team has must concentrate on the game rather than on the actress, failing which, the day is not far off when he may be dropped permanently from the team. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

Are you consuming adulterated oil?

he next time you buy loose oil lured by low costs, think about its quality. You might think you have bought groundnut oil and pay what it costs for a litre but you are being given groundnut oil that actually has more of palmolein in it and whose cost is much lower than what you have paid. This is what a study done by the Consumer Guidance Society of India (CGSI) points out to. In the study, the CGSI collected 269 samples of various types of oils like sesame oil, coconut oil, groundnut oil, mustard oil, sunflower oil, cotton seed, soyabean, godtel, etc. that are being sold loose, from across the length and breadth of the city and subjected them to tests to check their quality. And it was found out that 64 per cent of the collected samples were adulterated. “First, we tested these samples for presence of oils like castor oil, mineral oil, karanja oil that, despite being inedi-

The good news is that we did not find their presence in any of the samples but the sad part was that the tests did reveal that 64 per cent of the samples were adulterated for sure,” said Dr M S Kamath, Hon. Secretary, CGSI. “All the oil samples were checked for their Iodine Value (IV) and Refractive Index (RI) to confirm if the oil is genuine or adulterated because any change in these values which is above the range prescribed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), will indicate adulteration. And we found out that in 22 samples, the IV and RI values varied a bit but in 172 samples, in 64 per cent of the 269 collected samples, the values varied so much that there was no doubt that they are all adulterated,” said Dr Sitaram Dixit, Chairman, CGSI. “The 22 samples could be given a benefit of doubt of unintentional contamination by means of improper han-

A survey conducted by the CGSI reveals that 64 per cent of the oil samples they collected were adulterated, mostly with low-cost palmolein the cost of the consumers is the agenda behind this practice. Dr Kamath holds the Government of Maharashtra responsible for this by saying, “The Government Resolution (GR) passed by the Maharashtra government in 2013, citing the shortage of smaller quantity containers in the market, which allows the sale of loose oil, despite such sale being banned by the FSSAI across India, has led to this. We hope that the GR which is valid only for a year, is not renewed for the benefit of the consumers.” This CGSI report will be submitted to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in a day or two. “We will submit details of the sellers whose samples have been found adulterated to the FDA and we have been assured of action from the FDA. In a joint operation, a special squad from the Thane unit of the Food and Drugs Administration, along with officials from the Navghar police station led by Police Inspector (Crime) Suresh Gengne, busted a fake butter making unit in Bhayandar (E) on Monday. Based on a tip-off, Assistant Commissioner (FDA) Rajendra Runwal, along with a police team, raided a flat in Janta Nagar building located in the posh Jesal Park area of Bhayandar (E) where fake butter was being manufac-

tured. The accused purchased original Amul butter and blended it with spurious Vanaspati Oil and Ghee for an apparent two-fold increase in its quantity. The adulterated butter was frozen and later packed into Amul butter packets to be sold-off as a genuine Amul product in the local market. Samples of the seized butter have been sent to the laboratory for analysis. While 100 kgs of adulterated butter, blenders, packaging material and other equipment have been seized, the police arrested one person identified as Manoj Prakash Agarwal and booked him under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act. Further investigations are on.

So, fatty and sugar-rich desserts become harder to burn off, making it easy to put on weight during this period. Eat a bowl of sweetened yoghurt or dates and almonds, instead of multiple servings of phirni or halva.

brEaking your fast

lthough Ramzan is a time for abstinence, introspection and giving thanks, there is no reason to compromise on your health while you are fasting during the month. In this article, we tell you what to avoid, how to go about breaking your fast, how to deal with niggling health issues related to the lack of food, and how to enjoy the delicious dishes that most eateries offer during the month, without compromising on your health.

energy to help you tide over the period of fasting better, without making you feel ravenously hungry. Take a look at our tips for healthy eating during this period.

start slow You may be rather hungry by the time iftaar rolls around, but start slowly. Begin with a glass of water and light foods such as soup, salads and yoghurt. Eating a few dates is a traditional way to break the fast and it is healthy too, since they give you instant energy, thanks to their fruit sugar content. They are also rich in potassium, magnesium and fibre.

salt or sugar, but skip foods that contain them in large quantities. The idea is to eat in such a manner that the food isn’t digested instantly and stays in your system for a while, keeping you fuller for longer. For example, skip breakfast cereal and consume oats and fruit, or a whole wheat toast and eggs. Eating nuts and seeds such as chia seeds is also a good idea, as they contain several minerals, vitamins, fibre, iron and fatty acids. This is important because you will not be eating throughout the day, and may suffer from a deficiency if your nutrient levels are not balanced.

MakE it count

Ramadan fasts are usually broken with dates and then followed by iftaar. Since you haven’t eaten all day, iftaar is the perfect time for you to replenish your energy levels. So, you should make an effort to consume foods from all major food groups. Dr. Krushmi Chedha, senior sports nutritionist at Kokilaben Dhirubai Ambani Hospital, tells us, “During iftaar, it is better to eat two small meals than one huge meal. But make sure that the meals have a mix of carbohydrates, fibre and proteins. For example, mixing fruits and grains is not a very good idea.” We tell you about a few healthy meal options that you should consume during iftaar. l Incorporate protein-rich sources such as lean meat, skinless chicken, fish and eggs in your dinner as much as possible. l Pita bread with chicken, accompanied by salad, hummus and one or two pieces of baklava, is an extremely healthy and delicious option. l Chicken with boiled rice, vegetable curry and salad is also a good meal option as it includes ingredients from the five major food groups. You can have a fruit salad for dessert. l If you are craving jalebi or seviyaan, eat them only after eating something light such as baked fish with roasted vegetables or fish curry with boiled rice. l If you are eating out, order one roti, paneer, dal or any vegetable with white meat. This will fill your stomach and keep you healthy. l Bake or grill your food instead of frying it, and you need to fry it, reduce the amount of oil that you use. Measure the oil in spoonfuls instead of pouring it from the bottle.

Make both your meals count during Ramzan, by consuming whole wheat, oats,

During monsoon, eating food from the street may not be a very wise option. But, since it’s Ramadan, we are sure that you are tempted to eat out. However, take these precautions to ensure safety. l Check the premises for cleanliness, repair, layout, lighting and ventilation. If the place is not well-maintained, the food is not going to be hygienic either. l Enquire about the hygiene. Check if the food is prepared safely, if it’s stored in the fridge for an appropriate amount of time and if it is cooked properly. l Always clean your plate before you begin eating. If possible, carry your own cloth, as you can never be sure of how many plates have been cleaned with the same cloth at the restaurant. l The presence of insects such as cockroaches, flies and ants are sure signs of an unhealthy environment We recommend you head out of the place immediately! l The employees at the restaurant should look neat and clean. Try to eat only at places where the employees, especially chefs, wear gloves or hats. l If you are eating at a roadside stall, you can’t be fussy about hygiene. CoMMon HealtH probleMs You might suffer from minor health problems as a result of prolonged periods of fasting. Take a look at three of the most common health problems that can affect you during this period and see how you should deal with them.

HeadaCHes Headaches are a result, as well as an indicator, of several medical conditions. During Ramzan they mostly occur due to dehydration, hunger, insufficient rest and the absence of nicotine and caffeine — especially if you are a regular coffee drinker or smoker. Make sure that you eat a balanced meal before you fast and reduce sun exposure as much as possible. Ensure that you drink plenty of fluids while you can so that your body stays hydrated.

Heartburn While you fast, the production of digestive acids reduces, but just thinking about food, smelling it or being surrounded by it can lead to an excessive production of these acids, causing heartburn. This is especially common during the beginning of the fasting period, before your body settles down into its new food routine. To avoid acidity and heartburn, avoid consuming foods that are deep-fried, oily and spicy. You can also try lying down on elevated pillows to reduce the discomfort.

diabetiC Control If you suffer from moderate or extreme diabetes, you should consult your doctor before you start fasting. Also, self-monitoring your glucose level is crucial, as an extremely low blood sugar level is very dangerous. If it remains untreated, it can lead to fits, fainting, dizziness and disorientation. If you find that you, or someone you know is suffering from this, immediately consume a sugary drink or eat plain sugar as it will help to stabilise your sugar levels.

Make it easier

Keep these simple tips in mind to make the process of fasting easier, and to ensure that you don’t fall sick or subject your body to undue stress. Hydrate: Drink lots of fluids during suhoor and iftaar, as staying hydrated can help you feel more energetic and focussed. Get enough rest: When you are fasting, it is important to get enough rest. Apart from getting a good night’s sleep, put off tasks that you can postpone to a later date, when they won’t take as much of a toll on your physical and mental health. stay out of the sun: Increased sun exposure can sap your energy, making you feel weak, dehydrated and tired. So, avoid stepping out into the sun unless you absolutely have to. skip caffeine: It may be tempting to get your fill of coffee during your morning meal but you should avoid colas, coffee and energy drinks, as the caffeine can add to dehydration.

WorkinG out durinG raMadan If you have a regular workout routine, these simple tips will help you stick to it. We also tell you how to modify it during the month of Ramzan.

don’t stop Let’s start off with this tip — fasting doesn’t mean that you need to stop working out altogether, you just need to modify your routine. If you work out regularly, stopping for a month can flush all your hard work down the drain. A monthlong break is enough time to cause some serious damage as far as a toned body is concerned. So,

while you will not be able to develop more muscles or work on chiselling your body, you can, and should, preserve what you’ve worked towards, by exercising enough to maintain it.

adjust intensity You won’t be able to lift heavy weights during Ramadan with the same ease that you can when you are eating regularly. So, reduce the intensity of your workout. Aim for fewer repetitions and opt for shorter, easier workouts, instead of long, intense ones. Remember, that you either have a long work day ahead of you or behind you (depending on when you work out), so your body will not be able to handle a gruelling workout.

adjust tHe tiMinG Ideally, working out within a few hours of eating your morning meal is the best, because you have sufficient carbohydrate reserves to complete a full workout. However, if this doesn’t work for you, give it a few days and figure out when you feel the most energetic, and then try working out during that period.

skip tHe GyM If you don’t have the energy to go to a gym and pump iron, try other methods of working out. Play a sport, go for a swim or try yoga or aerobics. It will be a fun change in your usual routine and you will still get a substantial amount of exercise every day.

Heading to a draw Are you wondering why your diet isn’t giving you the results that you want? Dev Goswami tells you what mistakes you could be making

W

hile you might be well-informed about the basics of eating right, and are even aware of some common diet myths, it is still possible that you are making simple mistakes that are hampering the effectiveness of your diet. Read on as we tell you what you might be doing wrong.

followiNg someoNe else’s diet Following a random diet off the internet, or even asking your friends to tell you about weight loss tips that have worked for them in the past, isn’t going to give you the same results. For a diet to work, you need to take into account your metabolism, as well as your lifestyle habits, including the frequency with which you work out. This is why, in order to get the best results, you should ask a nutritionist to draw up a diet plan specifically for you.

Not couNtiNg calories

If you think that just eating low-fat and low-calorie food is going to be enough, you couldn’t be more wrong. Ensuring that you opt for foods that are low in fat and calories is important, but it is not going to have a substantial effect if you don’t keep track of how many calories you are consuming. If you really want to lose weight, you need to count the number of calories you eat at every meal and then calculate the total amount at the end of the day. This will ensure that you aren’t consuming more calories than your body can burn.

superfoods, super good From avocado to salmon, the world is currently going ga-ga over superfoods. However, that doesn’t mean you should load up on these foods. Yes, they help you lose weight and are low in calories, but as we mentioned earlier, you must also count the number of calories you are consuming. So, when you include a new food in your diet, you need to adjust your diet to accommodate the excess/ shortfall of calories.

Not eatiNg eNough

too maNy cheat days

This can be a result of a combination of a few points on this list, or it could also be because you (incorrectly), believe that eating less will help you lose weight. As far as the former is concerned, following someone else’s diet, not customising a diet to suit your needs and depending too much on super foods could mean that you don’t eat as much as your body requires. You might think that this is a good thing, but the fact is that if you don’t eat enough, your metabolism slows down and so, your body doesn’t burn fat. It is important that you get a nutritionist to tell you how much you need to eat to stay healthy, as well as to ensure that your diet gives you the desired results.

This is one of the simplest ways that you might be negating the effects of your diet. While it is okay to indulge in a slice of pizza or a can of soda once in a while, doing so every single time you feel low or have managed to run an extra kilometer isn’t going to do you any good. The best way to ensure that you don’t lose track of how many cheat days you are allowing yourself, is to set one day, every two weeks, when you can enjoy your favourite foods.

>> If your dieting efforts are not making a difference to the weighing scale, it’s probably because you are committing diet mistakes

>> Take this quiz to find out if you know enough about sexual health

In an ideal world, sex education would not be taboo and everyone would be safe, healthy and well aware. Unfortunately, there are several myths floating around that can be quite dangerous. To sort through a few of the most common ones, Rhea Dhanbhoora suggests you take this quiz

U

nfortunately for children in the city, several schools follow the generalised misconception, that being well aware and educated about sex and inculcating sex education in school curriculums, will lead to immoral behaviour. In fact, union health minister, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, was recently reportedto have stated that sex education should be banned and that marriage could be solution to AIDS. He may have later gone on to say that he was talking only about the ‘vulgar’ bits, but a closed attitude towards sex runs the risk of leading to diseases, unsafe pregnancies and abortions and an uninformed attitude about women and virginity. Sex education does not mean teaching children about sex. Instead, sufficient knowledge can actually teach them how to be safe and healthy. Half-baked information is more dangerous than no information, in the same manner as it is for health issues. To see whether you know enough about sexual health, pregnancy and STDs, take this quiz. 1. pain, pain,

go away! It’s a good thing to have a high threshold for pain, but you shouldn’t be ignorant of certain body pains, as they can lead to severe injuries such as sprains, pulled muscles and strains, says Yamini Walia

veryone experiences a certain amount of pain when they work out. Most of these aches indicate that your muscles are getting good exercise. However, there are some that you shouldn’t ignore. Learning to recognise what kind of pain indicates something serious is of the grave importance if you want to stay injury-free. Read on as we tell you about six such pains that you must not ignore.

E

lifts such as snatches and military presses? If so, then you are susceptible to experience a shooting pain in your back. This happens because you are constantly loading your vertebra with more weight than it can handle. The pain requires immediate attention, as it can result in the dislocation of your vertebra. Stop exercising in the mean time and visit your doctor as soon as possible.

sudden neck Pain

light-headedness

If you experience sudden pain in your neck, especially while lifting heavy weights, you need to stop immediately. This could be a indication of an overloaded blood vessel (caused by excess pressure), or a seized muscle, caused by the stress of the weight that you’re lifting. If you continue experiencing this, we suggest you steer clear of heavy weights for a while.

You might take feeling lightheaded while working out lightly, it is actually something that you shouldn’t ignore. A feeling of light-headedness usually occurs after you’ve completed an exercise that requires you to partially bend over and then stand up again. If, while doing so you feel very dizzy, you need to get your blood pressure checked. Low blood pressure can even cause you to faint during your workout. Just imagine feeling dizzy and faint, while holding a heavy weight over your head. Dangerous, isn’t it?

Back Pain Are you the type of person who concentrates more on overhead

severe tenderness in the groin area If, while performing heavy squats, deadlifts or lunges, you experience a tight pain in your groin, stop exercising, because there is a chance that you might have pulled your inner thigh muscle. You are bound to experience some pain while lifting heavy weights, but this type of tightness calls for immediate attention. Stretch the affected area and in case of swelling, apply an ice pack.

continuous shin Pain We understand that you want to lose weight as quickly as possible, but it doesn’t mean that you start exercising aggressively. The muscles in your lower leg may be under constant strain if you are increasing the intensity or duration of your workouts too quickly. Rest between your workouts, as the absence of a proper break can result in shin splints. Shin pain sometimes heals on its own within a few days, but if it persists for two weeks or more, we suggest that you visit a doctor.

Muscle soreness It’s normal for your muscles to be sore for a day or two, but if this lasts for more than three days, you should take a break, because it could be an indication of overtraining. Dr. Gautam Shetty, orthopedic surgeon and research director at Qi Spine Clinic, tells us, “Muscle cramps are a very common cause of pain and soreness while exercising. The

pain usually settles if you rest enough, stretch the affected part of your body and drink an adequate amount of fluids. If your muscles are worked beyond their capacity, it can lead to tears resulting in sustained pain and might also be injure your tendons and ligaments, causing significant pain and disability.” Your body can take anywhere between two weeks, to several months to recover from over-training.

« Know more: Types of pilaTes Pilates is an extremely popular and a fun way to keep your body fit. However, if the original form of this exercise is too mainstream for you, try these variations, says Shirley Mistry

P

ilates is a form of exercise that can strengthen your core, while improving your flexibility and range of motions. Apart from this, it also improves circulation, focus, and can reduce pain and muscle and joint stress. Take a look at these pilates variations that you can try out to switch up your routine.

>> Barre pilates is fun and will help you get toned, strong and slim

Piloxing Mix one part strength, with one part stability to get to the basics of piloxing. A blend of pilates and boxing, piloxing is more upbeat and focuses equally on both pilates and boxing, so that you get all the benefits of pilates, with the added benefits of weight loss, better stamina and increased strength. Piloxing workouts also include dance as an

element, which not only makes it fun, but also gives you a good cardiovascular workout.

Yogalates A combination of yoga and pilates, this variation is a complete winner. Both forms of exercise feature similar techniques and focus on improving strength and flexibility, while gaining greater control over your body. This exercise also lays emphasis on breathing and holding postures. Give this form of pilates a go, if you want to get the benefits of both yoga and pilates, and are focussing on better health, instead of just a better body.

Mat Work Pilates While most contemporary pilates workouts include some sort of equipment, mat work

pilates involves just a yoga mat. Similar to the original form of pilates, mat work pilates uses your body’s resistance to increase the intensity of the exercises.

Barre Pilates A combination of ballet, pilates and yoga, barre pilates uses minimal equipment and again, uses your body’s weight as resistance. The workout incorporates elements of all three streams and is said to help you achieve a dancer’s body — toned, strong and slim. Popular amongst celebrities such as Madonna, this form of pilates will keep you motivated, because the ballet element ensures that the workout doesn’t get repetitive, as the choreography makes the workout challenging.

ruse Munchausen Syndrome is an extremely rare, but dangerous mental disorder that will make you behave as if you are extremely ill, when in fact, you are not. Dev Goswami tells you more about it

it’s a very, very rare disorder MS is an extremely uncommon disorder, a fact that becomes more apparent if you use this as an example: Dr. Kersi Chavda, consultant in psychiatric medicine at the

Hinduja Healthcare Surgical, Khar, tells us that in his 32 years of practice, he has come across only 10-15 cases of MS. Munchausen Syndrome by proxy (read our box for more), which is a deadlier variant of MS, is still rarer. However, Dr. Kersi tells us that he has come across a few cases of this as well.

people with Munchausen lie... a lot

treating it It goes without saying that with something this serious, visiting a reputed hospital or doctor is the first thing to do. If you know someone who seems like they are suffering from this disorder, you should get them the help that they need. Since it is classified as a mental condition, a psychiatrist is best equipped to advise a further course of treatment. This treatment, Dr. Kersi tells us, starts with eliminating all possibilities of any physical disorder. It also needs to be supplemented by support from relatives who know exactly when to pay attention and when to ignore the patient’s protests of suffering from a disease. Dr. Kersi adds that medication is also used.

To put it simply, MS is a condition where a patient behaves as though he/she suffers from an illness, while in reality, he does not. Those suffering from MS might also lie about or fake their symptoms. The latter is dangerous, as patients can go to the extent of harming themselves with self-medication or by physically injuring themselves, just to display certain perceived symptoms. While it can be quite hard to diagnose MS, considering there isn’t any one specific Yes! There! And over here as well. I also have a headache. Is that related to my condition? Or do I have something serious? Do you think I should get more tests done?

Munchausen by proxy

Munchausen by proxy is a form of MS that is much deadlier, though less common. Dr. Kersi tells us, “Patients suffering from Munchausen by proxy can harm another human being or a child, just so that they (the person the patient is harming) get attention.” Just like MS, the exact cause for this disorder is unknown, but if you stop and consider the potential effects of a mother suffering from Munchausen by proxy, it will be simpler to understand why this disorder is deadlier than MS.

your bone heAlth

Yamini Walia tells you about a homocysteine test that can tell you about the health of your bones

A

ccording to the World Health Organisation (WHO), bone health is the one of the most dangerous health problems across the world, second only to cardiovascular disease. Human beings usually achieve peak bone mass when they are around 30-years-old and gradual progressive bone loss begins by their mid30s. The importance of keeping a check on bone health is best understood by this fact — once women reach the age of 50, the risk of suffering from a heart attack or an osteoporotic hip fracture is the same. Hip fracture, which is observed mostly among the elderly, is a dangerous injury, which can lead to hospitalisation and even death. Since, osteoporosis shows no symptoms until a fracture, it is important to be aware of the fragility and integrity of your bones. To determine this, bone mineral density (BMD) scanning is usually used. However, you don’t have to depend on BMD anymore. According to recent studies, mapping the levels of a protein called homocysteine, can prove to be a strong indicator of bone health. A high level of homocysteine is also a risk factor for conditions such as cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Prakash D. Samant, orthopedic surgeon at Samant’s Clinic, tells us, “When the amount of homocysteine in your blood exceeds 15µmol/L, it affects your body’s collagen cross links, which are important to ensure the health of your collagen network. Once this happens, the collagen is unable to form a healthy bone matrix, which results in fragile bones. So, by measuring the levels of homocysteine in your blood, you can predict the risk of suffering from a fracture.”

However, if you suffer from Munchausen Syndrome (MS), the opposite is true — you will look forward to meeting your doctor and finding out what disease you have been diagnosed with! We know how freaky this sounds, but unfortunately, it’s true. Here’s what you need to know about the disorder.

Dr. Kersi adds, “Those who suffer from Munchausen Syndrome will display disappointment if a doctor tells them that they aren’t actually ill.” As far as why someone might suffer from MS is concerned, there is no specific reason. Dr. Kersi tells us, “While there is no specific cause, signs of anxiety and depression are usually noticed among patients who suffer from MS.” He also tells us that patients of MS also show signs of personality disorders.

anofi Pasteur, a pharmaceutical company, recently conducted a study to determine the efficiency of one of its vaccines in battling dengue. The study confirmed that one in twenty children, in the study’s control group, suffered from dengue every year, which was three times higher than the initial estimate. Every year, a shocking 500,000 people (approximately), including children, contract severe dengue, which leads to hospitalisation. A total of 10,275 children, between 2 to 14-years-old, who reside in the dengue endemic ridden areas of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, participated in the study from 2011-2013. They either received three injections of the dengue vaccine, or a placebo at 6-month intervals. The results of this study, that were published in The Lancet, revealed that the vaccine shows an overall efficacy against dengue of up to 56.5% in children aged 2 to 14-years-old. “The results of this study show the potential of the vaccine to have a significant impact on public health,” says Dr. Maria Rosario Capeding, the study’s principal investigator, from the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine, Philippines. She adds, “The vaccine’s impact on preventing dengue haemorrhagic fever is noteworthy and is capable of changing the lives of millions.” — shirley Mistry

ask our beauty expert barbara, our beauty expert, will help fix your probleMs

dear barbara, I like my hair styled with spikes and a messy look, both of which require stiff hair. I have extremely soft hair and when I shampoo and condition it, it gets even softer and silkier, falling all over my forehead. No matter how hard I try, I am unable to style it the way I want to. To add to the problem, my hair also feels and looks extremely greasy, which is quite unsightly. I know that conditioning your hair is important, but I’d like to avoid these effects. What do I do? — abhishek singh, bandra dear abhishek, Conditioning your hair isn’t as important as you think it is! It’s true that the conditioner keeps your hair moisturised and depending on the conditioner you use, even protects it from damage. But, if you don’t have dry hair, you can avoid conditioning your hair every time you wash your hair — do it once every two weeks instead of once a week. You could also switch to strengthening shampoos that keep your hair healthy without the need for conditioning. As far as the problem of greasy hair is concerned, that usually happens when you use too much conditioner. Just one tiny drop is enough to help you tone down the damage done by styling products.

PoSt-vacation

care

Diving head first into your regular routine immediately after an extended vacation can spell doom for your hair and skin. Shirley Mistry gives you some simple tips to restore its quality after a long break

>> Lazing by the beach is fun, but it can leave you with sunburns and rough, dry hair

>> A small amount of conditioner goes a long way in nourishing your hair dear barbara, Once in a while, I get a painful, acne-like growth on my earlobe. I am not sure what it exactly is because it is present under the skin and feels like a tiny ball. It disappears after a few days and then suddenly makes an appearance randomly. Should I be worried about this? — karishma chauhan, colaba dear karishma, What you are talking about is probably a build of tissue and doesn’t sound harmless. But, since you say it is painful, it could also be an internal infection that you might need to get checked. Considering this has been happening to you once in a while, you probably don’t need to worry, but if it starts hurting more or starts growing, you should immediately consult a doctor. As for as what you should do right now, it would probably be a good idea to get examined by a doctor, just to be on the safer side.

V

acations and weekend getaways are a lot of fun, and give your mind and body a much-needed break. However, once you are back from a holiday, spare some time for your skin and hair before you are thrown into your mundane chores and pending office work. While holidays are relaxing, the travelling, and the weather can take a toll on your body, especially your skin. So, follow these simple tips to ensure that you slowly restore the health of your skin and hair and give it a boost of nutrition.

Mane Madness Too much travelling, especially if you have been on a road trip or have spent several hours by the beach, can wreck havoc with your hair. Be prepared to deal with rough, dry and lifeless hair once you’re back from your vacation because the sun, heat and humidity can cause frizziness and brittle hair. To deal with the problem and restore balance to your hair, book yourself an appointment for a hair spa or simply give yourself a deep conditioning treatment at home. Apply a heavy conditioner on dry hair in

the night, tie it up and tuck it into a shower cap to avoid dirtying your pillowcase. Let the conditioner penetrate into your hair the entire night, and wash it off in the morning for visibly softer, silkier and nourished hair.

scrub it away Travelling extensively, especially when it comes to road trips, hikes and bike trails, can make your skin rough, dry and dull. To restore your skin’s natural glow, use a gentle body scrub every alternate day, for a week after your holiday. This will scrub away the dead skin, moisturise it and help you make the most of the tan that you developed over the vacation. Use a cream-based exfoliator to ensure that your skin doesn’t dry out too much.

sore sunburns? Sunburns look unsightly and can creep up on you even if you think you have done a good job of applying sunscreen every two hours. It is easy to miss a spot and develop sunburns despite your most diligent efforts. Apply aloe vera gel on it

every night or use skincare products that are specifically meant to calm and soothe sunburns. Not only will this help your skin feel less irritated and splotchy, it will also heal the burns quickly.

water baby While on vacation, you may forget to drink enough water because you are caught up with several exciting things to do, which makes it hard to follow your normal schedule. Apart from keeping you hydrated and healthy, water does wonders to improve the health of your skin and hair, so ensure that you drink as much water as you can, once you are home, to replenish your skin and hair’s water needs.

soothe your skin Long flights and days spent sight-seeing can leave your skin looking parched. Undo the damage by increasing your intake of fresh produce and taking extra care of your skin. Don’t scrimp on applying moisturiser, as even one day of not moisturising can leave you with skin that looks dull and patchy.

he expanding retail footprint of global brands in India has been a major growth driver of retail real estate in the country. In an effort to map and analyze the spread of international retailers, CBRE undertook a research study of more than 300 prominent global retailers — Expanding Horizons of Global Retailers in India — to identify operating trends, expansion strategies, and extent of penetration across leading cities. Most of the international retailers surveyed for the study opted to enter India by opening a store in a major metropolitan city, such as New Delhi (79%) or Mumbai (68%), before gradually expanding their footprint to other tier I locations, including Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Pune. The graph below presents where retailers are already operating in India, as well as their preferred cities of operation. The India entry strategy for most global retailers from the CBRE survey continues to be guided by the economic and demographic dynamics of leading metropolitan cities. New Delhi is the top destination preferred by retailers, followed closely by Mumbai and Bangalore. In recent times, smaller cities in proximity to these large urban agglomerations have also witnessed a spillover effect, with an increased percolation of global brands. Hyderabad ranks fourth on the list of cities most favored by global retailers; but the gap between the number of retailers present in Hyderabad and Bangalore is significant (66 in Hyderabad compared to 102 in Bangalore). Apart from the major locations of New Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Mumbai and Bangalore, where a majority of global brands and retail segments are present, it is interesting to note the density of global brand segments in other tier-II and III locations. The emerging locations of the country with a growing presence of global

retailer presence include Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Lucknow, Surat, etc. Chandigarh is the most penetrated city in terms of global fashion apparel brands, with more than 50% of international retailers present there belonging to this segment. Ludhiana and Amritsar follow close behind. As far as global F&B brands are concerned — apart from the NCR locations of Noida and Gurgaon with a sizeable penetration of global eating outlets — nearly 25% of global brands in Lucknow happen to be F&B brands, closely fol-

lowed by Jaipur and Amritsar. Jaipur also has the most sizeable presence (~10%) of global cashand-carry brands in the city’s bouquet of international shopping outlets. Most of the global brands included in the CBRE study preferred to enter the country by setting up base in a metropolitan city, such as New Delhi (and the NCR) and Mumbai, before gradually expanding to locations such as Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, and in select cases, Kolkata. These locations have emerged as prime destinations mainly due to their high per capita incomes, the presence of a large working population and, in particular, a sizable share of households earning an annual income greater than INR 1 million. According to the study, luxury brands in particular have set up base in these cities before expanding to Hyderabad and Kolkata guided by the density of high net worth individuals in each of these prominent locations. The overall rainfall received between June 1- July 17 was 196.9 mm which is lower by 36% of the normal which is 308.2 mm”. Against this background, it seems unlikely that the RBI would change its policy rate structure in August when a review is taken on the overall state of economy including inflation, growth and liquidity. The Budget has had a neutral impact on the state of liquidity as the fiscal deficit remains unchanged. Some of the economic indicators such as core sector growth, IIP growth, exports look positive and do strongly justify easing of rates by the central bank. However, given that the RBI has spoken of tracking inflation closely (though CPI inflation has come below the psychological number of 8% in June), a wait-and-watch approach is most likely to be the option exercised by the RBI. In case, it does push aggressively for a rate cut, it would be beneficial for the system. But the probability of this action is still very low.

ast Tuesday, the Reserve Bank of India announced new regulations for banks issuing long - term local currency bonds. “These regulations are credit positive for the banks because they encourage them to issue longer - term debt by reducing its cost. Under the new regulations, longterm bonds (defined as those with a tenor of more than seven years) are exempt from cash and statutory reserve requirements as long as the bond proceeds are used to fund new long-term infrastructure projects and affordable housing. Also, loans funded by this mechanism are

exempt from the computation of adjusted net bank credit for the purpose of calculating priority-sector lending requirements” says Moody's Investor Services. According to Moody's “By exempting the bonds from cash and statutory reserve requirements, the central bank is effectively incentivizing banks to issue the bonds by reducing their costs. The new regulations are also likely to foster an improvement of banks’ competitive positioning visà-vis housing finance companies and infrastructure finance companies, because the banks’ lower cost of funding allows them to be much more competitive on pricing. RIL, BP Relinquish Yet Another Gas Block

Reliance Industries and its partner BP have surrendered one more oil and gas block, reducing their tally to 5 from 21 exploration acreage they held three years back. "CY-D6 Block relinquished as part of portfolio rationalization," RIL said in an investor presentation post announcing its first quarter earning numbers. RIL had in February 2011 announced a "transformational" deal when UK's BP picked up 30% stake in its 23 oil and gas blocks. However in August that year, the government allowed them to form a partnership in only 21 blocks. Since 2012, RIL and BP have been pruning their portfolio, shedding not so viable acreage.

DHAMAAL

Dhamaal is about four friends; Boman Contractor, who lives a wealthy lifestyle with his eccentric dad, Nari, who loves his antique car more than his son, and asks his son to leave when he damages the car; dim-witted Manav, his elder brother Adi (Arshad Warsi); and Roy, a trickster who wears a magnetized belt buckle. All four are afflicted by the get-rich-quick virus. Their fortunes take a turn after they accidentally bump into an underworld don Bose whilst he is about to die, who tells them about a hidden treasure in Goa including 10crore rupees. The group race towards Goa in Nari’s stolen car, little knowing that their plans will soon be foiled, albeit hilariously, by Police Inspector Kabir Nayak, who wants the money at any cost. usic concerts held for a good and charitable cause are a welcome development. Many classical musicians have been doing such concerts and their efforts are appreciated by the audience and by society in general. Shashwat Foundation has been engaged in the work of providing shelter to senior citizens. They have been running an old age home called the Sahawaas Vridhashram at Badlapur. The WA concert was organised at the Lokmanya Sewa Sangh at Vile Parle (E) recently, in aid of the project. The first artiste was sitarist Anupama Bhagwat who is stationed in Banglore. A product of the Imdadkhani/Itawa gharana, she has been trained by the elder musician, the late Bimlendu Mukherjee. She played the raga 'Puriya' in a quiet and non exhibitionist way. ational Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) presented the scintillating Bharata Natyam performance by acclaimed exponent Gayatri Sriram at the NCPA Experimental Theatre last week. Besides the structural and technical quality, Gayatri's amazing control over expressional dancing, takes you to a journey of classical delight that creates an everlasting impression on the audience. Singapore-based Gayatri Sriram is an alumnus from the renowned Kalakshtera Academy in Chennai, she is an ardent disciple of Guru Smt Minal Prabhu and performed at several prestigious festivals, all over the world. Gayatri commenced the performance with an invocation to Surya Devata and followed it with an

Gayatri's tremendous 'abhinaya' takes you on a flight of expressional delight that is versatile and a visual spectacle of excellence. This item was indeed the piece of resistance of the evening. Gayatri concluded the perelaborate Varnam in 'ragama- formance with an ashtapadi lika' Sringara Lola Muralid- 'Kuru Yadunandana', an exhara based on 'vaishnavism' tract from Jaydev's immortal and dedicated to Lord Kr- classique 'Geet Govind' incorishna. Gayatri enacts varied porating the inter-relationship episodes in fleeting seconds between Radha and Krishna.

This number was performed seated and it was sheer joy to watch Gayatri's expressions and body language of Krishna and Radha simultaneously, which changed in split seconds winning thunderous applause from the audience. Gayatri was supported with a well-knit orchestral team led by Guru Minal Prabhu on nattuvangam, commendable vocal by Balakrishna Sarma, mridangam by Gurumurthy, Prasanna Kumar on moorsing and side rhythm and flute by Krishna. It was an elevating performance indeed.

He is now based in the United States. Both the sitarist and the tabla player interacted well with each other and the overall impact was good and lasting. The second part of the programme was a vocal recital by Manjush Patil who is now a star. Diminutive in appearance, she packs her performance with a lot of power. Manjusha has trained under many gurus but her main teacher was the late Kanebuwa who laid the foundation of her music. Her ability to reel off super-fast taans invests her performance with rare vigour. She sang the raga 'Bihag'. The tonal curves from G to S were smooth and melodious. She was accompanied on the harmonium by Shriram Hasabnis and on the tabla by Yati Bhagwat. Bhagwat was the youngest of the lot and a very promising musician.

India ‘Lord’ over England with 95-run victory

ONE TO CHERISH: Ishant Sharma celebrates his fifth wicket after dismissing English batsman Joe Root for 66 during the second Test match at the Lords Cricket Ground in London. Ishant eventually finished with a seven-wicket haul.

By Chetan Narula

L

ONDON: India clinched their first Test win at the historic Lord's in nearly three decades as they rode on Ishant Sharma's inspired spell of fast bowling to demolish England by 95 runs and take a 1-0 lead in the five match series here today. The lanky speedster, whose consistency has always been under the scanner, delivered when it mattered most, as he grabbed a career-best 7 for 74 to bowl out the home team for a 223 in pursuit of a competitive victory target of 319. From a relatively comfortable 173 for four, the last six wickets fell for only 50 runs with the final five coming in only 12.2 overs after lunch on an absorbing fifth day's play. It took 28 long years for India to win a Test match at the 'Home of Cricket' after 'Kapil Dev's team achieved the feat back in June 1986 winning by five wickets. It also marked Mahendra Singh Dhoni's first significant victory as Test captain outside the sub-continent. The last time India won a Test match outside the South Asian region was back in 2011 when they defeated West Indies in a 1-0 series win. The victory was achieved in the 89th over when James Anderson tapped a Ravindra Jadeja delivery towards short cover and set off for non-existent single but Jadeja was alert enough to pick up and break the stumps down with a direct throw triggering off instant celebrations. Skipper Dhoni as usual collected a stump as souvenir as the jubilant players hugged each other with the support staff and reserve bench applauding them from the hallowed balcony. Resuming at a precarious 105 for four on the final day, the two overnight batsmen Joe Root (66) and Moeen Ali (39) batted with a lot of determination adding 101 runs in 44.4 overs before Ishant struck at the stroke of lunch. He got one to rear up awkwardly as left-hander Ali took his eyes off the ball in order to fend it. The ball lobbed up at short leg for Cheteshwar Pujara to complete a simple catch. Then came a series of horrible pull-shots as each andevery England batsmen took the bait of pulling Ishant and were holed out in the process. Matt Prior (12) deposited the mistimed pull to Murali Vijay specifically stationed at deep midwicket boundary for that shot. Ben Stokes (0) completed a hattrick of ducks as he provided a skier which Pujara accepted gleefully. Root, who looked solid in defence then pulled straight down Stuart Binny's throat at deep square leg. Once Stuart Broad (8) gloved one down the leg side to Dhoni, Ishant broke Amar Singh's 78-year-old record by recording the best bowling figures by an Indian at the 'Mecca of Cricket'. He had taken 6 for 35. Interestingly, this is also India's first Test win since the retirement of legendary Sachin Tendulkar as India have drawn three and lost two in the five Tests since the iconic cricketer's retirement in

November 2013. Ironically, when England lost to India at the Lord's back in 1986, it brought down curtains on David Gower's captaincy as Mike Gatting was put in the hot seat in place of the elegant left-hander. It seems like 'Yesterday Once More' for the home team skipper Alastair Cook's head is on line after prolonged poor form with the bat as well as his lack of assertiveness while captaining the side. For the Indian captain Dhoni, it will be one of his happiest moments having received a lot of flak for losing eight Test matches overseas in England and Australia during the 2011-12 season. Brief Scores: India 295 & 342 beat England 319 & 223 all out in 88.2 overs [Joe Root 66, Moeen Ali 39, Ishant Sharma 7/74, Mohammed Shami 1/33, Ravindra Jadeja 1/53] by 95 runs.

Action correction helped Ishant get back into form: Coach Kumar By Kushan Sarkar

NEW DELHI: Ishant Sharma's childhood coach Sharvan Kumar feels that all the criticism that the bowler faced in recent times was "justified" and is also proud that his favourite ward has answered back in the best possible way by winning an overseas Test match for India. "You can't deny that consistency has been a big problem for Ishant. Hopefully, this will be the series that will make him a better bowler. He got a flak for his inconsistency and it was justified. Or else, he wouldn't have been able to correct his flaws and come back stronger," Sharvan told PTI after Ishant's 7/74 helped in India's 95-run win. Asked about the kind of problems that Ishant faced, Sharvan didn't mince words in blaming former India bowling coach Venkatesh Prasad for the problems that crept up in his bowling. "Ishant is a quick bowler whom Prasad insisted on turning into a line and length bowler. He lost his natural affinity for speed at one point of time. One thing led to other and his action became flawed. The shoulder started dropping and the wrist position also suffered. This caused a drop in pace as well as confidence," Sharvan, who coached Ishant at the Patel Nagar's Ramjas College ground since he was teenager. He did speak to Ishant before he embarked on the tour of England. "I told him to look at his wrist position which should be very straight. He was also becoming a bit open-chested on his final delivery stride which needed to go back to the oldfashioned side on action in order to generate speed. "These are little things I told him and I believe that Joe Dawes has done a lot of good work with Ishant after the low he hit with Prasad as the coach," Sharvan said.

than most. I think we have been cribbing about the lack of quick bowling all-rounder, but we have to use the resources we have," Dhoni said about Jadeja. "That last over before lunch, Ishant didn't want to bowl short, I just told him he has to and turned away. It was a fantastic performance," he added.

‘CRICKET IS A GREAT LEVELLER’ Ishant, who was declared Man of the Match for his match-winning bowling spell in the second innings, said all his wickets belonged to Dhoni as it was the willy skipper who inspired him to bowl short. "Cricket is a great leveller, the way MS (Dhoni) bhai handled the team, the way he keeps on motivating the guys. I think all these wickets are not for me, it is only for the captain. He told me you are tall enough, you have to try the bouncer," Ishant said. He also had words of appreciation for the batting department. "The way our batsmen played in the first innings was commendable.

TRUCE... Ravindra Jadeja shakes hands with England's James Anderson after running him out to win the match on the fifth day of the second cricket Test match between England and India at Lord's cricket ground in London on Monday.

L

ONDON: India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni today termed the 95-run win over England, their first Test victory at the historic Lord's in nearly three decades, a "memorable" one and said the visitors had learnt from their disastrous 2011 tour. India rode on Ishant Sharma's inspired spell of fast bowling to demolish England by 95 runs and take a 1-0 lead in the five-match Test series here. "It was a memorable win for us because not many players have played Test cricket in England. But their approach was brilliant, it was a fantastic performance," Dhoni said at the post-match presentation ceremony. "I think we learnt from the 2011 series that it is important to stay in the game till the third day, because then our spinners come into the game. That was something that was needed, but we couldn't do it in 2011," he said. India last won a Test match at the 'Home of Cricket' 28 years back when 'Kapil Dev's team achieved the feat back in June 1986 winning by five wickets. Dhoni heaped praise on his batting department for their gritty display, especially on the first day of the Test on a lively Lord's pitch. "It was a crucial toss because there was something for the fast bowlers. I think the openers and No. 3 batsmen made the England bowlers bowl to them, you want the opposition to bowl more than 90 overs. Overall the batting department is really doing well, the tailenders are also contributing," he said. The India skipper had special praise for all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and lanky speedster Ishant, who grabbed a career-best seven for 74, to bowl out England for 223 in pursuit of a competitive victory target of 319. "Jadeja has to play that kind of game. I think the more Test cricket he plays, the more he will become a proper Test batsman. the only way of doing this was by scoring runs himself. "I'm trying my heart out to turn this around. First and foremost, I have to start scoring runs. The recent past hasn't been kind to me, but I have won some games as captain as well," he said. "If I am not good enough after the end of summer I will take a call," an emotional Cook said. Asked about the reason behind England's prolonged lean patch, Cook said: "Definitely it's an issue of confidence, and getting over the finish line. "There is a group of player desperate to win for England. But it will take a lot of determination to turn this around," he said. "A lot of our performances have been by the younger guys, that's good for English cricket. Yes, the older guys are not playing as well as their record suggest, same for myself, I have to start scoring runs as well." Terming it as a "tough defeat", Cook said India outplayed them in the match. "It's a tough defeat, I think we have to give India a lot of credit, they have outbowled and outbatted us."

Heena Sidhu in anti-hunting PETA campaign

MUMBAI: Ace India shooter Heena Sidhu has teamed up with PETA India for a brand-new ad campaign that shows her holding her pistol and taking a selfportrait with her phone below the words "Shoot Selfies, Not Animals: Say No to Hunting". The first Indian pistol shooter to be ranked number one in the world, Sidhu, in an exclusive video interview, also talked on the cruelty of hunting animals after her tie-up with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). "Hunting is the epitome of cruelty towards the animals, and we should take every measure to stop hunting. Animals like tigers, leopards, rhinos and elephants have been shot and hunted and poached for their skins and their horns. "If anybody spots someone hunting an animal, the first thing to do would be to report them to the police to take every measure possible to stop them from hunting," said Sidhu, who is a part of the Indian shooting contingent for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The ad was shot by ace photographer Gaurav Sawn with hair and make-up by Rohini Foregard. The Indian Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, prohibits hunting wild animals, but some people still shoot them under the guise of "sport" or to sell the skin, bones, claws, meat, horns and tusks of tigers, rhinoceroses, elephants and other animals on the black market.

pion School, St. Francis D' Assisi and Don Bosco, Borivali. These are the teams who more often than not compete in Group A of the First Division league. Campion School, Colaba too has been working hard in their effort to better their last year's performance as runners-up. Their coach Wilfred Alva has been putting his boys to the grind to bring out the best in them. “It is going to be a difficult season ahead for us. We have to believe in ourselves. Things are looking good for us now and we have a good blend in our side,” said Alva. Machado on the other hand, felt that the focus shouldn't be on de-

fending the title as an over-confident side can buckle under pressure. “Look at Spain and what happened to them. No one expected them to lose but they lost. Even the best of the best can fail, so we are treating it with caution.” The Matunga team's coach said that the only reason their school has done well is due to a proper system, which allows many players to make it to the final 14. “We encourage students taking up hockey and football. This helps us build a wide pool of players. If they can't make it to the main team, then they form part of our second team, so there is plenty of opportunity here,” he added.

ment after just two matches, said he had “agonised” over the decision since returning from Brazil. “This has been a very difficult decision, one of the toughest I’ve had to make in my career,” he told FATV. “I have agonised over this since coming back from Brazil and have

spoken to family, friends and people close to me in the game before coming to this point.” “Most importantly, Brendan (Rodgers, his manager at Liverpool) has been fantastic and obviously I have to look after my body as much as possible to ensure I can give every-

Walsh, Hawgood aim for decent outing G

LASGOW: Indian men’s hockey team chief coach Terry Walsh says their first target is to make the semifinals at the Commonwealth Games while Neil Hawgood, the person entrusted with the task of getting the best out of the women’s outfit, also expresses confidence of a decent finish. “The first objective is to accumulate sufficient points to go into the semi-final crossovers. Where our rhythm and skill execution has been of very good quality, our penalty corner conversion will be a key component in the whole process,” Walsh said. “Rupinder Pal Singh is overcoming a minimal adductor tweak and V R Raghunath has been executing very efficiently. Of course the key is match situation conversions.” Speaking on the side’s preparations, Walsh further said, “The team has now familiarised with the Games village and playing venue. The training level in the past one week has been encouraging and the group is focussed at building towards the performance stage. “We have a reshape strike group and that continues to grow in understanding and quality.” Meanwhile, having settled down at the Games village, Hawgood said the spirit among the girls is high. “The team is feeling quite confident and is in good spirits at the

We are now narrowing our focus to the finer points that will prove to be crucial in our matches and making sure that we are all working together towards our goal. Our penalty corner work is progressing. With some good results in Malaysia we are con-

fident that we have enough ideas about the style and execution of our penalty corners and if executed well, then we should see positive results,” Hawgood said. The women’s team will take on Canada on Thursday, with their male counterparts clashing with Wales the following day.

Indians adjust to common bathrooms at CWG Village

GLASGOW: The sizeable Indian contingent at the Commonwealth Games Village has taken a liking to the residential facility in the East End area of the city — the exception being having to put up with common bathrooms. The concerns arising over the outbreak of norovirus (stomach bug) outbreak at the Athletes’ Village notwithstanding, the Indians have given a thumbs up to the hospitality offered by the Games’ Organisers. However, they would have preferred attached bathrooms like the ones built in Delhi four years ago. “I think the Delhi Village was better planned and had more open space. But the overall quality of the Village is better here and the food is good. Here we also share the toilets but that has not been much of a problem so far,” paddler A Sharath Kamal, a three-time gold winner in CWG, told PTI. His coach Bhawani Mukherjee gave a sneak peek into the Village built around 35 hectares comprising 6500 beds and 700 “future homes”. “We have flats here like huts but rooms are very small. We have two rooms on second floor, one four bed and the other two bed with a common bathroom. On first floor, two bathrooms and four rooms. It is a problem but we need to keep in mind it is an athletes village. The nice weather here makes up for the minor shortcomings,” said Mukherjee. Asked about reports of diarrhoea, the coach said: “We are doing fine. We are very careful of what we eat.” India’s top squash player Saurav Ghosal said it would have been better to have attached bathrooms. “Common bathrooms have been alright so far. Of course it would be better to have your own bathroom. In comparison to Delhi, I would say it is cleaner here,” said Ghosal. Interestingly, 260,000 items of furniture, fittings and equipment were obtained from the London Olympics Village for use here. The work on the complex started back in 2009 and it was completed in January.
