he death toll in the hooch tragedy in Malwani keeps going up: it is now 100. As many as 40 patients are in hospitals -with many of them in a serious condition. The supply of methanol -- a chemical which was added to the liquor came from Gujarat. Methanol can be supplied only to liquor establishments with brand names. There is a strong suspicion now that these distributors have sold Methanol in black. The police have decided to make an investigation and round up the culprits. t was not exactly 26 July, 2005 deluge, but nevertheless 19 June, 2015 surely brought back those horrifying memories. Close to a decade now, we still seem to have not learnt our lessons. Back then after the deluge that left a few hundreds dead, it was then decided to construct nine sewerage pumping stations along the Mumbai coastline. Ten years later, only one, the Cleveland pumping station, has been built. That speaks volumes of the efforts of our rulers to make the city into Smart City, into another Shanghai and so on. Friday's heavy downpour had brought the city to a standstill, but that did not stop the political blame
every other Sena leader began blaming the rain gods and the multitude of government agencies that often seem to be working at cross purposes with each other and often independently of each other. The allegations are partly true, but our civic fathers and the governments are guilty of not addressing these issues. The corrupt civic and government administrations, builders' lobby, the land grabbing mafia, concretisation, depleting mangrove cover are all known excuses. The problem is more administrative and political rather than anything else. The city has already crossed its threshold as far as absorbing steady influx of migrants.

game. The deluge could not have come at a bad time for the Shiv Sena that has been in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and ruling the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). It still baffles many as to why it took so long for the Sena leadership to decide to call off its Golden Jubilee year celebrations in the evening given the incessant heavy downpour throughout the day. The answer given was wait till evening the weather might clear. And it did not. Right through midnight the heavy downpour made it clear that this was not something normal. But by then the political battle for the 2017 BMC elections had already begun. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Mumbai Suburban District Guardian Minister Vinod Tawde and other BJP leaders had swarmed the BMC's Disaster Management Control Room. Throughout the day you did not find the BMC Mayor anywhere in the picture. Only by late morning that we did see Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray holding fort at the Cleveland pumping stations where boulders had blocked the floodgates. And by evening, right from Sena president Uddhav Thackeray and
Besides this the policy to extend the regulatory cut-off date for illegal slums and free housing policy for the urban poor is adding more to already densely populated city. Malwani slums where illicit hooch has so far claimed 100 lives and the multi-storied slums outside Bandra East and West suburban station are clear examples of how corrupt nexus between civic administration, police and government help create them illegally despite laws and court verdicts. Attempts to ease the pressure of the city and develop the hinterlands of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) like developing the international airport near Navi Mumbai, Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), Coastal Road or even getting the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro III corridor is proving to be such a nightmare for any government that comes to power. Irrational political opposition to infrastructure projects have become the norm rather than offering counter viable solutions. Any infrastructure projects, like the BandraWorli Sea Link project or the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro takes a minimum of 10 years to complete.

A regular practice of yoga can provide the foundation for both, and must be encouraged. A lot of university and international athletics programmes have embraced Yoga as part of their regular curriculum.” Elli Avram, actor and Yoga practitioner, added, “I have always had an athletic background, and was a professional figure skater before entering Bollywood. round 700 policemen joined the International Yoga Day at Marine Drive on Sunday. The event as scheduled started early morning and lasted for about 2 and half hours. Even though there were continuous showers in the city the rains did not demotivate the participants. DCP Rajendra Dahade, who has been training 720 new recruits policemen, said, “The batch practised for this event since November 2014, one hour a week was dedicated to yoga by these men. They were very motivated to participate in the event. We want them to make yoga a part of their routine as it would help them come over the stress at duties.” At least 3,000 policemen marked
the grand event at different parts of the city. Not only the new recruits or under training policemen but also deputy commissioner level officials have also made yoga a part of their life. “It eases stress and is a great refresher,” said DCP (detection) Dhananjay Kulkarni, who performs yoga almost everyday.

Bhujbal with multi crore assets?
NCP leader and former PWD minister Chhagan Bhujbal
CHHAGAN BHUJBAL is an amiable sort. There is a strong instinct for survival in him. He was a poor, unheard of small vegetable vendor on a street. He has come a long way: He has become a successful minister. Last week, his properties were raided by the Anti Corruption Bureau. Evidently he has assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. He has properties in
Mumbai, Thane, Pune and Nashik. Now that he has earned the attention of the ACB, people have started making uncharitable comments about him. The diarist has met him once in his house. He appeared to him to be a simple man. He did not appear to be an avaricious individual. He is the one who gave the Mumbai Press Club prime land at a rental of Re.1 per year.
Bhujbal gained appreciative attention when during the Belgaum campaign, he disguised himself and landed there. Later when he joined Bal Thackeray's Shiv Sena, he came into his own. However, he fell out with Thackeray and left the Sena. The truth is he used Thackeray to go ahead in life. Thackeray trusted him and when he left, he was quite bitter about it. He was a success in Sharad Pawar's NCP. Why did he want to become super rich? How rich is he now? Consider this: He has two flats in Churchgate. The cost of a square feet of space at Churchgate is about Rs.50,000. He does not seem to be much bothered about ACB raids. If the charges which the police will file against him sticks, he will attract a few year's prison sentence.
It is reported that they who are mobilising support for Pakistan. They seem to have a good time in Kashmir. They wave Pakistan's green flags and are leading a life of luxury in the state. The PDP-BJP government has been kind to them. Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Mehbooba Mufti are quite sympathetic to them. The are not Indians: that's what they say. Their leader Geelani who wanted a passport to go to Saudi Arabia said he was not an

Indian. His argument was an Indian by birth. When he was born, Kashmir was not a part of India. Slowly we are seeing the Separatists in their true colours. They are clearly antiIndia and they are helping Pakistan to carry out its grab -- Kashmir plan. It is time they are not put in house arrest: they should be in jail.
WHAT do Separatists in Kashmir want? A separate Kashmir? Or do they want a merger with Pakistan? They have shown repeatedly they are friends of Pakistan leaders. They visit Pakistan's leaders and nobody in India what they are talking about. As per investigated reports, they are in touch with the ISI – the spy agency of Pakistan.

Who can hold drinks better – man or woman? QUITE a few woman have been caught for drunk driving in Mumbai. More women are now drinking in public places than before. The women in the city have provided proof they can drink just as much as men. Is it a sign of their
liberation? They not only drink but they also dash their cars against vans, mobiles and pedestrians. A drunk driver becomes a terror on the road. Who can hold drinks better -- man or woman?

In an unique initiative to put a permanent end to the hooch menace in coastal villages in and around Uttan and other chronic areas in Bhayandar, the cops are planning to counsel and rehabilitate female bootleggers and turn them to mainstream. As a part of the initiative, the distressed women especially widows, who are compelled to sell the hooch to feed their families will be provided with alternative employment opportunities with the help of NGO’s and other government organizations. A large number of female bootleggers were ready to abandon the booze business, but lacked knowledge or confidence about how to start or whom to approach for financial help and guidance about government schemes, an official said.

However, action seems to have been focused only on catching the small-time bootleggers even as the big sharks who actually produce and supply hooch have gone scot-free. It may be recalled
that irked over the rampant liquor menace, around 300 women had recently successfully implemented an elaborate plan to get rid of hooch dens operating in the coastal hamlets of Uttan.

Extend purview of purse seine net fishing ban, say fisherfolks By Suresh Golani
A
lthough they have welcomed the decision to ban purse seine net fishing beyond 12 nautical miles, the fishing community which still uses traditional methods have requested the government authorities to extend restrictions upto 50 nautical miles. An appeal to this effect has been made by the fishermen under the aegis of the Paramparik Kav Dhanda Bachao Samithi. It should be noted that thousands of fishermen from the coastal belt of Dahanu- Palghar-Vasai-Uttan are still engaged in traditional fishing practices. However, it has been alleged that purse seine net fishing which encircles entire schools of fish using a technique that resembles drawing of purse-strings has been a major reason behind depleting fish stock. This consequently has deprived thousands of traditional fishermen of their livelihood. A large number of fishing boats have already been grounded owing to a huge drop in fish catch. “The 12-nautical mile ban is a

A panel of experts appointed to study the impact of purse seine net fishing on aquatic life has made 25 recommendations which according to government authorities will be enforced in a phase-wise manner.

hree days after a seven-year-old girl was raped by an unknown person at Kandivli railway bridge, police on Sunday have released a rough sketch to nab the unidentified man, who was captured on CCTV. The girl was reportedly kidnapped and sexually assaulted in the wee hours of Thursday morning. The investigating officer N.N. Vidhate of Samta Nagar Police station said, “The kidnapper has been captured in CCTV and the investi-
gation is underway.” However, no arrest has been made so far. “We have found vital clues pertaining to this case and a rough sketch has been made of the culprit on the basis of the CCTV footage and the descriptions provided by the victim. As of now we have not been able to nab the culprit nor made any arrests on the basis of suspicion. We'll soon nab the culprit,” DCP of Zone 12 Ram Kumar told ADC. On the day of the incident, the victim was kidnapped by an unknown man, allegedly in his mid
twenties, from the foot-over-bridge of the Kandivali Station. When her father woke up at around 5:30am he found his girl child missing. Later the girl, whose clothes were soaked in blood, was found near Akurli Cross Road 1. Both her hands were broken. The girl was immediately taken to Shatabdi Hospital, where doctors after examination revealed that she had been sexually assaulted. Following this, hospital officials informed the Samta Nagar Police Station and a case was registered under the various Sections of the IPC.
Maria to meet Modi in London. Earlier, in a statement issued here to the media on Saturday Maria had clarified that in July 2014 he had gone to London to officially attend a conference there. He said that at the conference he was approached by an advocate representing Lalit Modi and stated that the former IPL boss wanted to meet him in regards to a grave threat to his and his family's life in London. The advocate requested him to meet Lalit Modi briefly and as per his insistence Maria met Modi. Maria stated that Lalit Modi told him that he and his family were being threatened by the Mumbai underworld.
The Mumbai police chief further stated that he told Lalit Modi that the Mumbai police did not have any jurisdiction in London and that he had advised him to return to Mumbai and lodge a complaint so that inquiry could be initiated. Maria stated that upon his return to India, he had immediately brought the above details to the notice of the Home Minister, Minister of State and also maintained the requisite confidential record of the same. He added that the Anti-Extortion Cell of the Mumbai police was also given in writing as to what had transpired, for discreet enquiry at their end.
India’s richest sandalwood ... Continued from pg 1 « meeting celebrities and cheering the cast and crew of the movie. Apart from the Marathi film 'Welcome Zindagi' produced by Satam, he is now all set to launch himself as a Bollywood producer in near future. It is still unclear about the huge amount Satan has invested in his movie despite several attachment of his properties, seizure of luxury vehicles during multiple raids. “This country has accepted many such people, I think everyone has a right to live his own life. If the law is permitting him to make money, why would he stop making films,” wonders filmmaker and activist Ashok Pandit. Satam's six properties and eight high-end vehicles collectively valued at Rs 32 crore were attached by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in April last year, besides cash amounting in crores. Having studied till class XII and having worked as a customs agent for exports, Satam is a master of red sanders smuggling. He was charged with Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The case was initially investigated by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in 2011.
Smuggling Syndicate Operations Just like Haji Mastan, one of the smartest smugglers history has ever known, Satam too operated the smuggling racket via sea route. Each container fetched him a profit of Rs.
3-5 crores. Satam operated with a few trusted men and had a 15member operations team. The orders were placed mainly online and sent through sea to Dubai from where the smuggled material was dispersed to China and Sri Lanka. Satam placed orders online with plastic or mango pulp manufacturers, who supplied the products in good faith. The containers were sealed by Central Excise officials on the company's premises, saying they contained declared goods. Satam and his aides then replaced the goods with red sanders in their godowns on the way to the Nhava Sheva port. A fake seal showing examination by the Customs was fixed to dodge prior or post shipping enquiries. It was revealed in the DRI and ED investigations that the red sanders were brought from Andhra Pradesh and the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border. DRI had busted the smuggling racket of precious wood that was busted in 2011 after raiding a residence of Satam's close associate Deepak Zare and seized total cash of Rs 2.58 crore. A joint probe by DRI and ED led to a conclusion that the cash was accumulated from the illegal trade. The agencies had even seized more than Rs 30 crore worth of assets, including an elite set of Bentley, Ferrari and Mercedes cars in the name of Satam. The export of Red Sanders is prohibited under Section 11 of the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992. ADC made several attempts to contact Satam but all calls went unanswered.
Death toll in killer hooch tragedy... Continued from pg 1 « The police say a big mafia is operating in Malwani. Vasai is another place where spurious liquor is made. Recently six arrests were made there. Spurious liquor samples will be sent to Forensic Laboratory at Kalina. About 45 patients are in public and private hospitals -- with 60 per cent being on ventilator.
Many of those who have survived have lost their vision. Police have so far raided 35 places and arrested over 40 people including a woman and her daughter in law. Till now eight officials from Malwani police station including senior police officials and 4 officials from Excise department have been suspended. Most them are said to be in hand and glove with the bootleggers.

Ponder awhile...
“So you think that money is the root of all evil. Have you ever asked what is the root of all money?” — Ayn Rand
But neither she, nor Raje, caused a loss of a single paise to the exchequer
T
HE government keeps increasing taxes on alcohol and as a consequence, the cost of liquor also goes up. Not many people in the city can afford to buy ‘Indian Made Foreign Liquor’. The demand for what is described as ‘country liquor’ keeps growing. The ‘manufacturers’ of this cheap liquor appear to be always in a hurry: They have no time to wait for the liquor to ferment properly. They add all sorts of chemicals and this hastens fermentation. They are not bothered about using pure water they use. And they have also problems of storage. They make all possible efforts to hide the bottles. The bottles can be kept inside a dark, dirty drain. They take desperate steps to hide the stuff from the police. On sale is country liquor too which is prepared with clean ingredients and openly. They too cost more and the hooch prepared by the bootlegger has to be cheaper even than this. A large number of people have no go but to drink the dirty stuff. As many as 100 people have died in the city after drinking the deadly stuff. The drink also causes death by slow-poisoning. Thousands must be dying every year in the city and elsewhere in the state due to slow-poisoning. It is being said that quite often some policemen become partners in the business. That day perhaps will never come when the government will decide to reduce tax.

T
HE monsoon session of Parliament will soon be upon us. Unless the political storm over two powerful women politicians’ close nexus with Lalit Modi is quelled it may be hard for the better known Modi to manage the aggressive shouters and protesters. The Congress, in particular, seems to have latched on to the indiscretions and improprieties of Sushma Swaraj and Vasundhara Raje — and they are no more than that, at least so far — and is trying to make a feast of the admittedly tiny morsels to try and make a scam of the kind it had created in its time in power and for which it is justifiably notorious. Indeed, while we come to the two errant women in a moment, let us dispose of the Congress pretensions. Were all politics to adhere to the Biblical commandment about only him who has not sinned throwing the first stone, the Congress would have been out of business long, long ago. But if it chooses to throw stones at others, it does so in the belief that the public memory is short and that soon the voters, who had dumped it most contemptuously only last year, would per force bring it back. They might not. Should better counsel prevail, the Congress would stop making too much ho-ha over what are the first signs of misconduct by senior BJP leaders. Whether it is Swaraj or Raje, the important point is that in neither case has the public treasury been looted even of a khota paise. What the two powerful leaders have done is certainly wrong, and for that they must be made to make amends. At least, Swaraj ought to have volunteered to quit. Her fault was greater. She tried to help a fugitive economic offender behind the back of everyone in the Government, including the Foreign Office. Quite clearly, Swaraj was fully aware that what she was doing was wrong, but she nonetheless did so in the hope that it would stay secret. Lalit Modi had the Indian Foreign Minister, no less, pulling strings on his behalf with the British for procuring the travel papers. But truth has a way of popping up when you least expect it to. The British media was going after Keith Vaz, senior Labour MP and chairman of the Home Affairs Select Affairs Committee, for intervening on behalf of the Indian fugitive when, co-incidentally, Swaraj’s questionable role cropped up. Why Swaraj couldn’t say no to Modi is not hard to understand. Her husband Swaraj Kaushal and daughter Bansuri were both Modi’s lawyers. In fact, Kaushal was house guest of Modi in London. So, family’s pecuniary interests received primacy, not correct ministerial norms and procedures. And that is where the nub of the Swaraj controversy lies. It is unfortunate that someone so senior, so eloquent would always make wrong judgment calls. Not long ago, she had emerged as a great patron of the Bellary brothers. Indeed, when the Reddy brothers plonked themselves in expensive five-star suites in Delhi, Swaraj felt obliged to ensure that senior BJP leaders called on them. Some did readily, others reluctantly. Talking of Swaraj’s indiscretions, a bit earlier her name was linked with a wannabe Delhi politician, Romesh Sharma, who later turned out to be a criminal. Sharma is now cooling his heels in the Tihar jail on a number of criminal charges. It so happened
that even the Reddy brothers soon found themselves in prison for unlawful mining and other racketeering. Indeed, we have a feeling that the latest protégé of Swaraj too could be in prison. We will return to Lalit Modi in a moment. Let us consider why Swaraj tends to patronize the wrong kind of people. Both she and her husband being from lower middle class — her father was an Ayuervedic Vaidya, his an assistant in the Punjab University secretariat — they have been trying to climb the greasy pole of greed and sleaze. Politics affords ample opportunities to social climbers. Both were Socialist Party activists in their student days and studied law. But neither achieved success as lawyers the way, say, a Kapil Sibal
INSIDE STORY Virendra Kapoor or an Arun Jaitley did. Seen in the above perspective, it is natural for them to claim `family friendship’ of decades with someone like Lalit Modi, isn’t it?
was eventually forced to return to India, tried and convicted for fraud, and sentenced to several years in jail. Will history repeat itself in the case of Lalit Modi?
Vasundhara Raje’s hubris
N
OW for the second collateral victim of Lalit Modi’s desperations. In all the noise over Raje’s affidavit to the British to allow Modi to stay on in London, an important point is missed. If she did sign that affidavit, as claimed by critics, she did so when she was not the chief minister. Norms and protocols out of power are different, though the RajeModi nexus, especially in her first term as CM, was the subject of much salacious gossip. They veered apart sometime ago. Reportedly, the reason was that Raje was unwilling to play ball with the manipulative Modi. Speculation that the bit about Modi investing in her son’s company was leaked to take the focus away from Sushma cannot be dismissed out of hand. The investment may well be legally okay but it is morally questionable. It is the sort of thing that Mayawati’s brother, Anand Kumar, had indulged in when after resigning as a clerk in the UP Irrigation Department he had floated a slew of companies and crooked businessmen were made to pay thousands in premium to acquire a ten rupee share in those companies. Still, why Raje, who, unlike Sushma, had everything going for her — namely, a royal pedigree, great wealth, an unquestioned leadership of her own State, etc. — would jeopardize her career supping with a controversial character is beyond comprehension. Maybe it is hubris. Who knows?
In the footsteps of Dharam Teja?
N
OW about the flamboyant and brash Lalit Modi. As a student in the US, he was arrested for drug possession and kidnapping and given two-year suspended sentence after he had confessed to the above crimes. The Rajiv Gandhi Government reportedly came to his rescue, though nobody raised an objection at the time, probably because he was the son of an industrialist. That was then. By now, everyone is aware about the IPL scam under Modi. Just when the heat was turned on him, he fled the country. A blue corner notice was issued. But afterwards, the Government chose to do nothing. P. Chidambaram now waxes eloquent as if he was out to slay the economic demon, but fails to answer why the blue corner notice was not turned red for all the years Modi has lived in the lap of luxury in London. So, the Congress too has a lot to answer for. But Modi may be in trouble now. The full fury of law would soon be on him. He could be forced to return to India to answer grave charges of financial skullduggery. Thirty years ago as a student he might have escaped going to jail. But now he should be prepared for the worst. The NDA Government is unlikely to persist with the kid-glove treatment he had received from the previous regime. Meanwhile, Modi reminds us of Dharam Teja, an equally flamboyant tycoon in the 60s who had won over Prime Minister Nehru and secured a sizable amount from the Government. Socialist leader Ram Manohar Lohia had caused quite a storm, alleging that Teja had gifted Indira Gandhi a mink coat. Teja
A true messiah of the poor
C
RITICS of Arvind Kejriwal ought to reconsider their opinion of him, really. The man is a genius. All these years beginning with Indira Gandhi in the 70s, every politician has only talked about Garibi Hatao. And here is the AAP boss, just under four months as the most charismatic chief minister of the capital city of India and he has already devised a plan to banish poverty from the land. The Kejriwal Government will ensure that power distribution companies compensate all those who have metered electricity in their homes in case of power shutdowns. Since the news about the scheme leaked out, poor people particularly haven’t stopped jumping with joy. Those who have what they call kundi connection have hurried to get regular metered connections. The scheme envisages that for every hour of power blackout the house-owner would be paid Rs. 50. Since Kejriwal is doing all in his capacity as chief minister to penalize the power distribution companies, there is a good chance that power shutdowns might last some ten to twelve hours daily. Which would straightaway translate into Rs.500 to 600 per shanty-dweller per day. Need the poor expect anything more from their messiah? Truly, we doff our non-existent hat to the Great Leader. P.S. But why is he being partial to the relatively well-to-do South Delhi colonies? One should have thought that the people in these colonies can do without financial compensation but still power has played truant there for long hours in the last few days.

First shower punctures authorities’ tall claims THE recent heavy showers in the suburbs of Mumbai have exposed that the state government, MMRDA and BMC had not taken earnest efforts to stop water logging, since the main problems were dug-up roads, uncovered manholes, protruding cables, mounds of uncleared garbage and debris strewn around every street. Why were so many projects taken up months ago, not completed, leaving several manholes open and nullahs uncleaned? Was it not the responsibility of the civic authorities to ensure that the works were completed well before the arrival of the monsoon and ensure that the road were free of potholes. Who are those municipal officials and contractors who were employed for the upkeep of the city roads, drainage work, and entrusted with the supervision and carrying out the major repair jobs? Why are they not being penalised heavily - when we face massive water-logging, floods and so on, year after year ? Why should the BMC ever spent crores on such road and drainage and other infrastructure maintenance works and entrust the jobs to incapable contractors? Let us keep facing the floods, water logging, bad roads and so on, every year. That is Mumbaikars’ destiny! — S. Krishna Kumar, Dombivli

Left with grand secular ties?
Slap the municipal officials and contractors with huge penalty for being unable to stave off serious crisis like waterlogging that inundated Mumbai of rainfall and was in deep water as seasonal rains combined with high tide played havoc with city life coming to a virtual halt and standstill. Mumbai does not have proper facilities be it roads, sanitation, water and garbage management and other important civic areas but the FSI is increased for monetary consideration which would prove deadly in the days to come. Greedy politicians wants to construct skyscrapers like New York in Mumbai but the the infrastructure and sanitation facilities remain as that of Bihar or even worse than that. Mumbai is an 'Time bomb' waiting to explode as far as environment is concerned and let us put an end to all this fiasco by stopping
all construction activities in the city and first providing basic infrastructure and sanitation facilities to the people before thinking of further development. — S.N. Kabra, Goregaon
THE air quality report of Mumbai released by World health Organisation (WHO) is alarmingly high. The Mumbaikars are at high risk as they are left with no option but to inhale the carcinogenic air pollution, as – according to report - Mumbai spews out 760 tonnes of toxic gases every day. Every school children, policemen, politician and aam aadmi living in the city are, thus, being poisoned with toxic gases of
vehicles, manufacturing units as well as dust and allergens swirling out of its construction sites could have triggered the deadly condition in the city. The air quality in Mumbai has gone alarmingly down from its safe levels. We could cough our way to death amidst high pollution levels in Mumbai. Authorities should take immediate step to control pollution in the city, otherwise more and more people will be effected from these hazardous air pollutants. Citizens should also realise the gravity of the situation and cooperate with the authorities to implement new system to reduce the presence various health problems. — P.K. Bose, New Panvel
A REPORT appearing in a section of print media says that the Left (read CPM) in West Bengal istoying with the idea of aligning with the Congress. If this experiment is repeated at the nationallevel, as was the case during May 2004 to August 2008, the country will see a grand secular allianceof the Congress, the Janata Parivar, the NCP, the BJD, the AAP and the AIADMK. However, the othersecular parties like the BSP, the TMC and the DMK would not like to join this band wagon due totheir bitter rivalry with the Netaji, the Comrades and the Amma, respectively. They would prefer toform their own pressure group in the Lok Sabha, depending upon their numerical strength. — Arun Malankar, Santacruz
MERS threat A HEALTH advisory has reportedly been issued about the MERS threat to those who intend to visit Thailand, and to those who are undertaking the Haj pilgrimage. In this context, it can be recalled thatthe conjunctivitis virus was brought to India for the first time in 1971 by the pilgrims returning fromSaudi Arabia after performing the Haj. Before that year, the disease was completely unknown in India. — Vineet Phadtare, Borivali

human life does not have value. From the poor people side, the thirsty lot are ready to drink whatever available as most of the celebrities show the way how to consume the deadly drink on a regular purposes with their ads. In films also such scenes are not censored but a caution of slide follow the scene as a matter of protecting the interest of the people. It is a matter of great concern and the people should be made to repent for their follies and the authorities should be made accountable for all their lapses.
HOOCH tragedy at Malwani has taken the country by storm as over 90 deaths were reported and many more still fighting for life. The tragedy could have been avoided had the government machinery was able to track the illegal making of hooch within the state. Police failed to spot it right to make them stop illegal manufacture of the spurious liquid. Hospitals within the vicinity lacked the much needed life support ventilator and thereby the victims coming in large numbers — Abhishek Ram, Vashi could not be provided the required treatment. Thus, it was total chaos that causes all the problems and the SPURIOUS liquor has claimed 13 dead in Malwani area of suburban Malad and it is a matter of great concern as 7 others were battling for life. Most of the dead were poor labourers, rickshaw-pullers and hawkers, who fell ill after consuming spurious liquor in Lakshmi Nagar slum in Rathodi village near the Jurassic Park resort. Despite clear cut instruction the people look for cheap liquor and thus paying heavy price for what they did in an anxiety to consume whatever available in the area. The state government may announce a compensation to the families of the deceased. Even though such tragedies are taking place time and again, the state and Central Governments plead ignorance of such Hooch tragedy happenings and the people go for

ELBOURNE/LONDON: Tens of thousands yoga enthusiasts around the world on Sunday took to mats and stretched, bent and twisted their bodies in complex postures in a symbol of universality of the ancient Indian spiritual practice as they marked the maiden International Day of Yoga. Over a thousand people participated in dozens of events across Australia to mark the day, with Prime Minister Tony Abbott appreciating Yoga's universal appeal. "For thousands of years, yoga has provided its followers with a guide to bringing their minds, bodies and spirits into balance. "Yoga's universal and growing popularity demonstrates its appeal to people from all the walks of life and its great potential to foster better health among individuals and populations around the world," Abbott said. Melbourne saw over 500 people gather at the Springers Leisure Centre to kick off the day with 'Surya Namaskar' and bending and twisting their bodies in complex postures. Yoga not religious; an antidote to violence, conflict: Sushma U
NITED NATIONS: India on Sunday said Yoga should not be seen as belonging to any particular religion and the ancient spiritual practice can serve as the "perfect antidote" to stem "negative tendencies" and move humanity on the path of peace in a world beset by violence and conflict. Addressing the first International Day of Yoga celebrations at the UN, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said, "The entire world is one family, and we can unite it with Yoga". "At a time when ethnic conflicts and extremist violence are threatening to destabilise societies, Yoga can serve as the perfect antidote to stem such negative tendencies and move us on the path of harmony and peace," she said. "I am confident that Yoga can also become a potent tool
Swaraj said. "Yoga is neither a religion, nor should it be seen as belonging to any particular religion. It is a science, the science of well-being, the science of integrating body, mind and soul, the science of actualising our true potential. Yoga began in India some five thousand years ago. But it was given the ultimate seal of international acclaim only last year by the UN, she said. The gathering at the UN included Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations, Sam Kutesa, President of the General Assembly, spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, and US Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard. "And this is the place where it all began," Swaraj said recalling that on the September 27 last year when the Prime Minister Narendra Modi had first made the proposal in the UN General Assembly to have

n the new India with changed parameters of doing business the new mantra is growth but with good governance. The new aspiring India is surging forward with ethos forcing the old guards to change the way they are accustomed to do business. In a recent study of 500 top BSE companies conducted by Ambit Holdings, it was found that well-governed companies out-performed their peers over the last 20 years. According to Industry captains the growth of governance is the only way out for Indian businesses to responsibly thrive in the long run. This was discussed at the panel discussion 'Growth with Governance' at IMCs 107th Annual General Meeting last week. What is a well governed company? According to Ashok Wadhwa, Group CEO, Ambit Holdings the four remarkable characteristics of well-governed companies are firstly, they follow best in class governance policies.
Secondly, their owners exhibit significant respect for minority shareholders. Thirdly, these companies follow respectable capital allocation. And lastly, they are not dependent on political patronage. “That governance is the bastion of only large listed companies is a wrong presumption, because the small and medium enterprises of today will be the large companies of tomorrow leading the market indices,”said Wadhwa. Ratan Tata, Chairman, Tata Trusts, who is mentoring a number of new entrepreneurs including Kunal Bahl of Snapdeal believes that enforcement of good governance is important for growth. “Governance in India in the 90's used to be more intrusive and micromanaged. While it has, over the years, been less intrusive and more transparent; we are weak in enforcement and its equality irrespecContinued on pg 14 »

Path To 10% Not Impossible, Believes Arun Jaitley Afternoon Despatch & Courier

oting that a new aspirational India expects early results and decisive governance, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has exuded confidence that with the government pursuing economic reforms, policy changes, pumping in money in key sectors like infrastructure, along with a good monsoon, the path to 10% growth is not impossible."This is reasonably possible. That is where India's potential is," Jaitley told an audience here soon after his arrival in Washington on the second leg of his nine-day US tour to attract American investors. "It is important that we reach that target, but it is more important that we sustain it for a couple of years," the Finance Minister said in his remarks on 'Putting India back on track: A pathway to double-digit growth', at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), a top US think-tank. "If we are able to sustain it for a couple of years, then I think, we will be able to have direct benefits as far as India is concerned, more jobs, better economy and hopefully over the next 10 years or so deplete the poverty levels in the segments that are more impacted by it," Jaitley said giving his overview of his government's economic policies."I can't say as to what figure India's growth rate would achieve. But I am certainly of the view that the seven-and-a- half per cent growth that we are presently at is not India's optimum potential. This year, we hope to touch about eight per cent," he said. Once the impact of all policy changes made by the new Indian government and investments in key areas like infrastructure, agriculture
and industry is felt, Jaitley said, "I think there could be a significant growth". If inflation stays at moderate level, one should logically expect the interest rates to go down, which would directly impact and add to the Indian economy, he said. "Once the cumulative effect of all these plus favorable global winds, I think the journey between eight and 10% is not an impossible journey," Jaitley added. He said that India reached this seven plus per cent growth rate in the backdrop of a terrible monsoon last year and there was a second round of crop destruction in March this year. The manufacturing sector was almost crawling, and the growth rate was around five per cent, Jaitley said. "Now with a lot more money being invested in infrastructure and governments even conducting their fiscal policy in order to help the manufacturing sector, there is a significant growth possible as far as this area is concerned," he said.
"Therefore the Make in India programme, concentration on manufacturing, the impact of all these steps – coal mine auctions - I think in the coming years is going to up India's manufacturing sector significantly," he said, adding that the government has taken steps to boost up the small scale industries in the rural areas. Hopefully, with a better monsoon this year, agriculture must do better and would add to the nation's economy, he said. Goods and Services Tax (GST) has the potential to add at least one per cent to the GDP of India, he said adding that last year, India grew by 7.3% in terms of GDP."In terms of fiscal deficit, from an all-time high of six per cent plus, we brought it down to four per cent. Our current account deficit, last quarter was 0.2 which is quite an exciting figure for us. Capital formation has improved. Some trickling effect on the infrastructure area has just about started. Power sector has performed quite well," he said. He said the government still has pending work at hand."The Land Bill is a difficult challenge...I think, we will have to fight it out and explain the benefits of the land bill because it is intended for the development of India's rural areas," he said adding that he is very positive on GST. "We have several other reforms in the pipeline. The bankruptcy court, reducing the number of permissions required for setting up businesses in India, a public procurement law, a law on expeditious execution of disputes relating to big projects," Jaitley said. The social programmes of the government, including the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, have become mass movements and therefore are producing greater results, he said. (PTI)
Maharashtra Mulls Action Against Bogus Chit Fund Cos Under MPID Act
C
By A Business Reporter
hit fund companies operating in Maharashtra have come under the scanner of the state government, which is considering to take strict action against these dubious establishments to recover investors' lost money. Infact, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has called a meet of SEBI officials, the Enforcement Directorate and police officials, to take a financial decision in this regard. On June 9, BJP MP Kirit Somaiya had submitted a list of 162 companies to the Security Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and Fadnavis in connection with the matter. On action by the state government after the submission of the companies list, Ranjeet Patil, Minister of state for Home (Urban) said, "the state government is considering to take strict action
against chit fund companies and hence Chief Minister has called a meeting next week." Somaiya had claimed that the bogus chit fund companies have duped investors in the state to the tune of Rs 40,000 crore. After his submission of the list, Fadnavis had asked Additional Chief Secretary of the Home department to probe into the issue. "We have a challenge before us to recover the huge investments of small investors that are stuck in sealed bank accounts of bogus chit fund companies. We have also seized properties of such companies and some chit fund companies continue to operate their businesses," Patil said. "The CM is in favour of investors and wants to take action against bogus companies. He wants to discuss the aspects of the Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors
(MPID) Act, if applied against chit fund companies and hence has called a joint meeting on June 22," Patil said. Additional Chief Secretary (Home) is also expected to make a presentation of the MPID Act and the manner in which it could be applied on bogus chit fund companies. Patil further said that a few foreign companies had approached the state government in January this year and had shown interest in helping the government to recover money from chit fund companies. While refusing to name the companies, Patil said that though it is pre-mature to say anything much but the government may conduct an auction of seized properties of chit fund companies."We might consider auctioning the properties of these companies to repay investors," he said. quity mutual funds continued to gain traction in the current fiscal as the category saw an inflow of over Rs 20,000 crore in the first two months of 2015-16, mainly because of positive returns from stock markets. This measures up against an inflow of more than Rs 70,000 crore for the whole of the past fiscal (2014-15). Industry insiders believe that MFs would continue to attract medium-tolong term money into equities even as the markets have turned volatile in the past few weeks. According to data released by Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), fund managers invested a net
amount of Rs 20,660 crore in equities and equity-linked saving schemes during the first two months (April-May) of the current financial year. Of the total, equity mutual funds attracted Rs 10,076 crore in May while the same stood at Rs 10,584 crore in April. "Despite the recent volatility in the markets, fund managers are bullish on equity markets. Mutual funds have been witnessing net inflows from investors as they are getting positive returns by investing in stock markets," Quantum AMC Associate Fund Manager (Equity) Nilesh Shetty said. "Even in case there is some instability in the market, we may not see huge redemptions as investors have seen good returns in the medium and

o did US Fed “chicken out”? We do not think so. However, they have definitely tried to play safe, and also like a ritual, did what they have done so many times since the Great Recession, down grade their economic forecasts to a more realistic level. They are not alone in this, IMF and much of us, the buy/sell side community is guilty of that. Enough ink has already been spilled as to explain why the structural reset has confounded most observers but let me talk about another angle to economic forecasting. Economic forecasting is like driving through a mountainous stretch in a thick fog. The driver has a fair idea where the road leads to and where it wants to go. However, visibility is limited to a few meters and hence one has to be alert. The driver knows that it may have to alter course and make sudden evasive maneuvers, if the situation demands. Economic forecasting should also be done and accepted in that light. Would the Fed hike in December or next year? It does not matter, as long as they do in the near future. The bigger question is what is the overall bias of
their monetary policy and why did they refrain from committing to a timeline. I believe, US Fed sees the situation in Euro zone as fluid and serious. The game of thrones being played in Euro zone, a political theater, is both dangerous and dramatic. US Fed did not want to box themselves in a corner, by calling a timeline, and then see “Grexit” become a reality and markets turmoil. US Fed may have wanted to keep the flexibility on, so that, incase Euro zone finds another innovative way to kick the Greek can down the road, like they have done umpteen times over past six years, US Fed can bring the rate hike theme right back on table.
Back home in India, our external trade for the month of May, moderated further, not a very encouraging sign. Sluggish exports growth momentum and renewed signs of weak domestic demand-led fall in imports aided the comfortable trade deficit print. In my last week’s column, I explained the causes behind the improvement in current account balance. The sharp contraction in core imports, ex-petroleum and ex-gold, is a sign of weak domestic economy. The core imports plunged by 3.5% in May, after rising 7.1% yy in

April. However, capital goods imports remained stronger. Of late, the capital goods segment has been strong in IIP composite index as well. These indicate that the investment cycle has started to move, though the pace remains moderate. In a positive development, monsoon has started well. Based on data available with IMD, till 19th June, out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions in the country, 16 have received excess rainfall, 7 have received normal rainfall, 9 have received deficient rainfall and 4 have received scanty rainfall. The next 30 days will be key for monsoon, as normal rains over the next 4 weeks, shall ensure a strong sowing of agricultural crops. A bumper harvest shall push prices of agricultural commodities lower and ensure food inflation not become a problem. A lower inflation can bring about some more ease in the monetary policy rates over the coming quarters. However, remember, in case of bumper crop, with global commodity prices on a down swing, we can see rural India get into income stress later during the year. However, for urban India, it is a gain and so for Indian bonds. Over the next week, traders will wait and see, whether RBI hikes the government debt limit for FIIs, as expected. oday, people are not very good at capturing data about things in the real world since they have very limited time and attention. If computers could gather data without any help from us, we would be able to track and count everything and greatly reduce waste, loss and cost. This is exactly what the Internet of Things (IoT) will enable. IoT has evolved as a result of the convergence of multiple technologies, ranging from wireless communication to the Internet and from embedded systems to micro-electromechanical systems. This means that the traditional fields of embedded systems, wireless sensor networks, control systems, automation (including home and building automation), and others all contribute to enabling the Internet of Things. The main motive behind interconnecting these things is to offer an enhanced, physical living experience. The interconnection brings an integrated view of the status of the functions offered by the things.
The concept of a network of smart devices was discussed as early as 1982, with a modified Coke machine at Carnegie Mellon University becoming the first internet-connected appliance, able to report its inventory and whether newly loaded drinks were cold. The programmers could connect to the machine over the Internet and check the status of the machine to know whether there would be a cold drink awaiting them if they went over to the machine. Kevin Ashton, cofounder and executive director of the Auto-ID Center at MIT, first mentioned the Internet of Things in a presentation he made to Procter & Gamble (P&G) in 1999. IoT has become immensely important today because it is the first real evolution of the Internet—a leap that will lead to revolutionary applications that have the potential to dramatically improve the way people live, learn, work, and entertain themselves. As the Internet becomes more and more knowledgeable about humans, it will be more accurate at knowing just about everything. IoT is now making it possible to connect billions of things and provide more intuitive insights to help companies revolutionize their business processes. Companies will be able to achieve enhanced process optimization and efficiencies by collecting and reporting on data collected from the business environment.

Regulatory Climate, Market Uncertainty, and Ever-Demanding Customers Cloud Horizon; Offshore Players Face the Tightest Scrutiny; Tough Strategic Choices must be made, says a new report by the Boston Consulting Group
G
lobal private wealth rose at a healthy pace in 2014, just under that of the previous year, but wealth managers must raise their games on numerous fronts and decide where to invest in their own businesses if they hope to ensure profitability through 2020, according to a new report by The Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Global Wealth 2015: Winning the Growth Game, being released yesterday. The report, BCG’s fifteenth annual study of the global wealth-management industry, addresses the current and future size of the market—notably the projection that the Asia-Pacific region (excluding Japan) will surpass North America as the wealthiest region in the world in 2016—and explores the keys to profitability on the basis of extensive benchmarking of global players. The report also examines the choices that institutions face regarding where to invest in their own businesses in order to achieve profitable growth and overall future excellence. “Potentially disruptive forces are everywhere,” said Brent Beardsley, a BCG senior partner and a co-author of the report. “The tightening regulatory climate, a more complex investing environment, highly demanding clients, technological evolution, and other trends are straining traditional models. Almost three-quarters (73%, or $13 trillion) of private wealth growth was generated by the market performance of existing assets, with the balance (27%, or $5 trillion) generated by newly created wealth. North America, with $51 trillion in private wealth, remained the world’s wealthiest region in 2014. But for the first time, Asia-Pacific (excluding Japan) overtook Europe (Eastern and Western Europe
combined) to become the world’s second-wealthiest region with $47 trillion. With a projected $57 trillion in 2016, Asia-Pacific (excluding Japan) is expected to surpass North America (a projected $56 trillion) as the world’s wealthiest region, and is further projected to hold one-third of global wealth in 2019. Over the next five years, total private wealth globally is projected to post a compound annual growth rate of 6% to reach an estimated $222 trillion in 2019. Wealth Distribution: The report says that the total number of millionaire households globally (those with more than $1 million in private wealth) reached 17 mil-

Private wealth in India showed solid market gains, driven mainly by investments in local equities. India’s equity market rose by 23% India posted a strong GDP growth rate of 15% and a savings rate of 18%
lion in 2014, up strongly from 15 million in 2013. The increase was driven primarily by the solid market performance of existing assets, both in developed and emerging markets. Millionaire households held 41% of global private wealth in 2014, up from 40% a year earlier, and are projected to hold 46% in 2019. The U.S. still had the highest number of millionaire households in 2014 (7 million), followed by China (4 million). Private wealth held by ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) households (those with above $100 million) grew by a strong 11% in 2014. Benchmarking: According to BCG’s bench marking of more than 200 wealth managers—a study involving more than 1,000 data points concerning growth, financial performance, operating models, sales excellence, FTE efficiency, client segments, products, and trends along a number of dimensions (including locations, markets, client domiciles, and different peer groups)— the most successful players over the past three years possess five key characteristics. These attributes, which are explored in the report, are the following: segment-specific value propositions and coverage models, rigorous price realization in target client segments, a
differentiated advisory offering, a focus on front-office excellence, and the ability to measure and manage profitability. Offshore Wealth Management: The report says that despite the intense scrutiny being placed on offshore domiciles, there is still potential for profits and future growth for offshore players that stay ahead of the curve strategically. “Clients are still willing to pay a premium for benefits such as political and financial stability, regional diversification, high-quality service, discretion, and broad expertise across products and asset classes,” said Anna Zakrzewski, a BCG partner and a co-author of the report. “Top offshore performers are transforming their businesses tomake them viable for the future.” Investing in Excellence: The report says that it is critical for wealth managers to determine where they should be investing for the growth of their companies. Across all regions, BCG client work and research have revealed certain patterns. For example, onshore businesses in North Ameri¬ca and Eastern Europe and offshore players in Switzerland plan the highest allocation of resources (71%, 63%, and 62% of their respective investment budgets) to optimizing existing businesses as opposed to expanding into new areas. All other regions are allocating slightly more than half of their resources to optimizing existing business. The three highest priorities for enhancing existing businesses are improving sales force effec¬tiveness (17% of total investment re¬sources), enhancing digital interfaces (14%), and increasing collaboration with other business units (10%). “Of course, most wealth managers are still grappling with traditional challenges such as how to attract new assets, generate new revenues, and manage costs,”said Daniel Kessler, a BCG partner and a coauthor of the report. “Newer challenges include raising digital capabilities and coping with potentially disruptive new business models. Their priorities for investing in themselves have to be clear now.”
Taking India On The ‘Green Growth’ Path
Mashelkar further said, “We always think about the ‘cost of doing it’ but ‘think of cost of not doing it’, Kedarnath is now in our memories. We have to get into a profession of making impossible possible and set bigger targets as far as nature is concerned. The idea of solar bonds is an innovative one which gives everyone a sense of confidence.” “There are doable ideas mentioned in the book and our own preparedness along with innovation is important,” added Mashelkar. Speaking at the launch, Arun Firodia said, “Former President Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam’s thoughts regarding the overall growth and development inspired me to write this book. ariman Point may never regain its lost glory as the premier business location it once was. However, it will remain an important business district for certain industry-specific occupiers. For instance, established and individually-owned chartered accountancy firms will not move away from this location, since their proprietors own their offices and do not lease them. Likewise, law firms actively specializing in extensive and high-profile litigation need to be close to the courts and will, for this reason, always prefer Nariman Point - which offers walking distance to the High Court as well as Mantralaya (the seat of Parliament) - to other locations such as BKC and Lower Parel. Interestingly, start-up firms looking for smaller offices will also continue to prefer Nariman Point to other locations, since they are unlikely to get affordable 500 sq. ft. offices anywhere else in the city.
Still A Superlative Location: Nariman Point has good rail connectivity with both Churchgate and VT Station in close proximity, and is in the same vicinity as South Mumbai's elite luxury residential areas Napean Sea Road, Breach Candy and Cuffe Parade. In terms of social infrastructure too, Nariman Point scores extremely high with the Trident Hotel, a Inox multiplex, high-end restaurants and its unmatched sea view. Nariman Point's fortunes may change for the better in the future. The proposed Coastal Road will certainly lead to increased traction for this location when implemented, and the deployment of a metro line that ends at Cuffe Parade will mean greater accessibility from here to Churchgate station, effectively negating the once obligatory taxi commute. It should also be mentioned that the rapidly decreasing rentals there will inevitably lead to an increase in demand for offices at Nariman Point. While the above factors do not exactly translate into a possible return to former glory, it does mean that Nariman Point will not sink into obscurity anytime soon. Commercial Future: Nariman Point is unlikely to re-attract larger MNC occupiers who have already moved out to other SBD locations. What can be expected is that companies which are currently based out of Nariman Point will expand within their current buildings, or into other buildings close by. Companies currently occupying leased office premises at Cuffe Parade and Churchgate may, in fact, aspire to move to Nariman Point since it is more up-market and the rental differential it offers will be at its lowest in the next few years. Currently, office rentals at Nariman Point are equivalent to or 10% lower than rentals at Lower Parel, and 35% lower than rentals are BKC. The best buildings at Nariman Point command rentals of Rs. 275–300/sq. ft. on carpet area. In comparison, the rentals for the best buildings in Lower Parel and Worli range between Rs. 300– 350/sq. ft. For some further perspective, some buildings in BKC fetch a rental of over Rs. 450/sq. ft. on carpet area.
Residential Pitfalls: On the residential real estate front, things could certainly be better at Nariman Point. Apart from the fact that there is zero fresh supply, ongoing property tax disputes between many Nariman Point societies and the local authorities are causing buyers to look askance at buying into some of the resale options in these projects. If matters on this front clear up, the local authorities could use the property tax collected to refurbish the buildings and embellish them with modern facades and better amenities. Meanwhile, the dire need to widen roads at Nariman Point is not going away; unfortunately, only greater willingness by the authorities can help on this front. Also, pushing the Coastal Road proposition will definitely improve matters.

CMP: Rs. 323 Target Rs. 350 For the 4th quarter of financial year 2015, Aarti Industries Ltd posted a 12.64% growth in Net profit to Rs. 527.60 million from Rs. 468.40 million in previous year period. Net sales stood at Rs. 6774.80 million against Rs. 7441.40 million in the corresponding quarter ending of previous year. In Q4 FY15, Revenue from Pharmaceuticals segment rose by 27% of Rs. 817.50 million, compared to Rs. 644.80 million in Q4 FY14. During Q4 the company had manufactured NCB s of about 14,780 tons as against the production of about 12,980 tons for Q3 FY 2015.The incremental capacities increases the company’s market share for NCB in domestic and global markets and also provide adequate feedstock for the related downstream products, having higher EBIDTA. While in case of Pharma segment, the EBIT were largely in line with the Q3 numbers’ estimates, with the increased presence in the regulated markets, the company expects the segment to grow by about 20% over next 3-4 yrs. In respect of proposed expansions of PDA capacities from 250 tpm to 1000 tpm, the company is in the final commissioning stage for the first phase of expansion, scaling the capacities upto 450 tpm. The balance capacities are expected to be going onstream in phases by Q3 FY16. Thus theses expanded capacities would enable to increase its volumes in the high growth end user applications of polymers specialties pigment and agro chemicals. The company’s consistent focus on its target segments along with increase in exports of its products are the most important reasons behind the growth. AIL Presence in high margin specialty chemicals with diverse applications and has Global Scale Units and Manufactures more than 150 products across 60 countries. Thus the company expects that the proposed demerger would lead to more focus approach for the growth and success of these three segments and thus would also facilitate increase in shareholders value. We expect that the company surplus scenario is likely to continue for the next three years, will keep its growth story in the coming quarters also. During the year, the company had witnessed the increase in Operating Profits. The commissioning of various ongoing projects and new projects over next 8 quarters would helps to maintain its growth momentum. We expect the company to post a CAGR of 13% and 17% in its top-line and bottom-line respectively. Hence, we recommend ‘BUY’ for ‘AARTI INDUSTRIES LIMITED’ with a target price of Rs. 350.00 on the stock.
KOTAK SECURITIES CALLS A ‘BUY’ ON KNR CONSTRUCTIONS CMP: Rs. 536
Target Rs. 641
KNR Constructions is present in the construction of roads and highways with track record of generating positive operating cash flows and low debt equity at 0.1x. KNR has witnessed strong order inflows of ~Rs 23.5 bn in the first two months of FY16 led by pick up in project awarding by the government on EPC basis. As a result, the order book grew~3x to ~ Rs 36.5bn which was Rs 13.2 bn at the end of FY15. Further, the company is targeting to add another Rs 10 bn of new orders in the remaining 10 months. In our view, we are at the beginning of capex revival in the road construction sector as the central government aims to award total 9000 km of road projects in the current financial year and the trend is expected to continue. This gives positive outlook for future order inflows of KNR. We expect KNR’s revenue and PAT to grow at 29% and 23% CAGR in FY15-17E considering sharp pick up in the order book giving high revenue growth visibility for FY16E and FY17E. The high revenue growth would positively impact its RoCE and cash flows. We initiate coverage with Buy recommendation on the stock. A well-managed construction company in the challenging times. KNR is among the few construction companies which managed to efficiently counter challenging business environment in the past 3-5 years when many large peers struggled to sustain their businesses. During this phase, KNR maintained its track record of meeting its funding requirement through internal cash generation, decent core RoCE (~20%), low debt equity (0.1x) and working capital (avg 66 days), etc. Valuation: At the CMP, the standalone construction business is available at FY16E & FY17E PE of 18.1x and 11.6x. We believe that the stock may see further re-rating considering high revenue growth visibility, impressive execution track record, strong balance sheet and decent ROCE profile. We recommend ‘BUY’ on the stock with the target price of INR 641 which includes Rs 593 from construction business (valued at 15x FY17E EPS), and Rs 48 per share for BOT business (valued at 1x book value).

My husband is working with a Software Company and we shifted to USA 3 years ago. We took one health care policy while we were in India and paid premium for 3 years, also he is also having his term insurance plan for which he paid premium regularly for 8 years. Now we want to stop both policies. Will it get lapsed? Can we reactivate it once back there? Please guide whether to continue it or not? —Kareena Halankar, Borivali Both the plans are pure protection plans. The benefits will cease as soon as you stop paying the premium. If you stop then you will have to apply for fresh policies again. Although this should not be an issue but the premium of your term plan is calculated on the age when you buy the policy. If you buy a fresh policy later then the premium will be higher than what you are paying now. Our suggestion is - continue both the policies if you intend to return to India in the next 3 to 5 years.

There are Lit Fests taking place all over the country, but the community of readers is dwindling. Still, passionate book lovers would like to know what others like themselves are reading. This Book Nook suggests some books, but would also like to connect with serious readers, or even casual airport book browsers. Do write in about books you have loved or hated and why. The best entries will be shared on this page. Please send your recommendations to adc.booknook@gmail.com.

reg Iles planned an epic trilogy about America’s Deep South, the centre of racism, violence and remnants of the white supremacist Ku Klux Klan gangs. The first was Natchez Burning, the second is The Bone Tree, the third is yet to come out. It’s a massive amount of work and words, as his hero Penn Cage, lawyer, novelist and Mayor of Natchez tries to keep his family together, fight entrenched corruption in the local police department and also solve past Civil Rights cases; he also gets embroiled in a quest to unravel the conspiracy behind JF Kennedy’s murder. Without having read the first book, some names and incidents may not be clear, but that doesn’t stop the reader from going through 800 plus pages, gripping in most part.
A can of worms must have opened in the last book, which explodes in the second part of the trilogy. At the centre of the action is the unbelievably powerful and venal, Forrest Knox who uses his position as a police chief of Louisiana to run every crime racket possible. Like his equally evil father, Frank, before him, and his grandfather Elam (serial child abuser, whose bible is covered with human skin), he is the head of a racist group called the Double Eagles to which his crazy uncle Snake and cousin Billy also belong. He hopes to make a fortune in real estate after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, by killing surviving black people and grabbing their homes. Forrest is a formidable adversary for Penn Cage, who, when this story starts, is being tortured by a Double Eagles man Brody Royal, along with his new fiancée, local newspaper editor Caitlin Masters. They are saved by a journalist called Henry Sexton and another black man Sleepy Jonston (who must have had a bigger role to play in the last book), but Royal’s home is burnt to the ground, taking with it a lot of secrets; also throwing up some with the ashes and smoke. An earnest FBI man John Kaiser is around to both aid and obstruct Penn— he is keener on following the JFK murder trail, than bothering about the immediate crisis. But everything leads somehow to the Knox family – a vile and demented bunch –and the Double Eagles. What can solve many mysteries is the Bone Tree, a huge cypress that is somewhere in the middle of the vast
Excerpt from The Bone Tree
TONIGHT death and time showed me their true faces. We spend our lives plodding blindly through the slaughterhouse gate between past and future. Every second is annihilation: the death of this moment, the birth of this moment. There is no “next” moment. There is only now. While the pace of life seems stately in the living, we funnel through that gate like driven cattle, fearful, obedient, insensate. Even while we sleep, now becomes then as relentlessly as a river wearing away a rock. Cells burn oxygen, repair proteins, die, and replace themselves in a seemingly endless train: yet from the womb, those internal clocks are winding down to final disorder. Only in the shadow of death do we sense the true velocity of time— while adrenaline blasts through our systems, eternity becomes tangible and all else blurs into background. It is then, paradoxically, that seconds seem to stretch, experience becomes hyper-real, and flesh and spirit unite in the battle to remain breathing, conscious, aware—afloat in the rushing stream of time. If we survive the threat, our existential epiphany quickly fades, for we cannot bear it long. Yet somewhere within us, a dividing line remains. Before and after.
Louisiana swamp, and the spot where Klansmen and Eagles dumped corpses of the women they raped and men they tortured. Nobody talks about it or reveals its location for fear of inviting the wrath of the Knoxes. Penn Cage’s father Dr Tom Cage and his buddy Walt are on the run, accused of murder. The cause of the Cage family’s current problems, is Dr Cage’s old nurse and lover Viola, who was raped by the Eagles and
Tonight time slowed down so much I could taste it like copper on my tongue. I felt it against my skin—dense and heavy—resisting every move. Mortality hovered at my shoulder, a watchful beast of prey. Chained to a cinderblock wall, I watched a man older than my father torture the woman I love with fire. I realized then that hell existed; the terrible irony was that I had created it. In arrogance, against the counsel of others, I’d wagered all I had and more—the lives of others—to try to save my father. In desperation, I cast away every principle he ever taught me and reached into the darkness in the hope of a bargain. What did I get in exchange for my soul? A pillar of fire roaring in the night. The pyre of three men, probably more, visible for miles across the flat Louisiana Delta. Probably even from Mississippi. Not far to the east, my town sleeps along the highground above the river, but here all sense, all logic is suspended while the fire devours the dead. Two of those men gave their lives for Caitlin and me. Henry Sexton, reporter. Sleepy Johnston, musician and prodigal son of Louisiana. One a white man, one black. Allies by chance, or maybe fate. Either way, they’re gone forever. Through the slaughterhouse gate. I’ve never witnessed such brutality as that which preceded their deaths, nor such heroism as was displayed in their sacrifices. Yet all I can taste is ashes. Three months ago I felt a lot like this, as a flood of biblical scale swept over New Orleans, the only real city between the Gulf and Memphis. Three hours south of here, hazmat-suited crews are still dragging bodies from mildewed houses. That disaster, like this one, had human causes. Greed, apathy, hubris—even loyalty—all demand payment in the end. Storms will always come, and men will always do evil in the shadow of some other word. It’s how we respond that defines us. A few minutes ago, gripped by a mad delusion of invincibility, I carried Sleepy Johnston out of the basement inferno where this fire was born, and not once while I staggered through the smoke and flames did I doubt I would reach the surface. I hauled a man nearly my own weight as easily as I would have carried my eleven- yearold daughter— but to no avail. Two minutes after I laid him on the ground, Johnston died of his injuries. Now he lies a few yards behind us, staring sightlessly at the smoke-obscured stars. I did not pray while Caitlin knelt to ease his passing. Anything I said would have been superfluous, for if any God exists, he must surely fold such martyrs into his embrace. I watched in silence while Caitlin reenacted the oldest ritual in the world, cradling the older man’s head and murmuring maternal reassurance into his ear. Touching my newly scarred face with my right hand, I drove the nails of my left-hand fingers into my palm. Pain is proof of life. After Johnston expired, I comforted Caitlin as though I h ad some purchase on reality. But that was only another delusion, though I didn’t know it then. Then . . . ? With alarm I realize that these events happened only a minute ago, if that. Does a man in shock know he is in shock? Probably not.
would have been killed years ago, but for the intervention of Dr Cage. To save her, he had to make a pact with a gangster, and unwittingly become a part of the Kennedy assassination plot. Penn hides his mother and daughter and does everything he can to find and protect his father—the old man being virtually indestructible. Meanwhile Caitlin and Kaiser’s photographer wife Jordan Glass take great risks to hunt for the Bone Tree.
There are dozens of characters, many subplots and a very complicated story that will continue into a third part. Fidel Castro makes a guest appearance when Jordan Glass goes to Havana to interview him. He is a link in the Kennedy killing chain, trying to keep Cuba from going the capitalist way. (“Sometime after I die, Cuba will revert to capitalism and the Walt Disney company will have Mickey Mouse running the damned casinos.”)

riram Karri’s Autobiography of a Mad Nation begins thus: “I was born in a mentally retarded country.” That is enough to hook the reader—at least an Indian reader—who understands and identifies with the writer’s words. Karri’s second book was longlisted for the Man Asian Literary Prize in and has enough merit to be on that enviable list. Like Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children, the book hurtles through real events that India has witnessed in the recent past—the Emergency, Indira Gandhi’s assassination, antiSikh riots, the Ram Janmabhoomi episoide and its aftermath, Mandal Commission protests, economic liberalisation, Gujarat riots. His journalistic credentials give Karri the ability to research well, contextualize and write in a direct and unpretentious style. There is, of course, enough masala in the story to convince the reader, that India is indeed mad nation, and getting worse by the day. The book’s angry protagonist, Vikrant Vaidya, writes to the President of India to decide whether or not he is guilty of the crime (murder of a Muslim boy called Iqbal) for which he has been convicted. The President gets M. Vidyasagar, retired head of the CBI to investigate. And what emerges is a plot with many twists and turns and a cast of prominent characters, that places the blame for India’s insanity right where it belongs. Autobiography of a Mad Nation By Sriram Karri Published by Fingerprint Pages: 382
The Bone Tree is intricately plotted, and in spite of some slow and some implausible portions, very readable. A key character dies and one of the villains escapes to keep the story going into the next part. All three together would make for an absorbing television mini series. The Bone Tree

TV TATTLE TWIN SHOWS
Zindagi brings you the best of entertainment and the biggest names on television with the launch of two new shows Aaja Sajna Miliye Juliye and Kabhi Kabhi that premier on 22nd and 23rd June respectively. Premiering, 22nd June at 8 pm is Aaja Sajna Miliye Juliye. It will bring back the superhit jodi of Fawad Khan and Sanam Baloch and is a roller-coaster ride of drama, romance and delightful light- hearted comedy. The show is a modern adaptation of the popular Pakistani novel Mirat-ul- Uroos, it is a story of two sisters Akbari and Asghari, who live in UK along with their parents. Launching on 23rd June at 9 pm, Kabhi Kabhi is the love story of two vastly different individuals (Eeshal and Ariz) who fall in love despite stark differences in their economic and social standards. The very talented Ahsan Khan and beautiful Mehwish Hayat will be seen in the lead roles along with Javed Sheikh, Alyy Khan and Bushra Ansari.
Star Plus takes another leap in storytelling with 'Phir Bhi Na Maane…Badtameez Dil'. It is an intense and passionate love story of Abeer Malhotra, a VJ and Meher Purohit, a business head, who get separated because of their own misunderstandings and the manipulations of others only to meet again after seven years to resolve the unsettled issues and misunderstandings. The show will be going on-air on Star Plus from June 29, 2015 at 8:30 pm. Excerpts from the interview with Asmita Sood. By Sandeep Hattangadi
ter? Meher is a geek and I was a good student but definitely not a geek. So I had to work a lot on my body language and personality. She is very particular and reserved which is the complete opposite to me. So I am actually not socializing much just to get into my character. She is independent and so am I. I’d like to say Meher and Asmita are similarly different.
How did you get your big break on TV? I’ve been a model doing TV commercials and films down south for quite some time. One casting director from a production house called me after he saw one of my commercials and said I’d be perfect to play Meher. I auditioned and I honestly wasn’t very happy with my audition but surprisingly they loved it and the next thing I know is that I was on board. Tell us about the show, Phir Bhi Na Maane Yeh…Badtameez Dil? Phir Bhi Na Maane…Badtameez Dil is a very unique love story of Abeer and Meher. Abeer who is a Rock Star of Grove channel suddenly gets a new boss, Meher. Incidentally, both share a past which will pan out in the future. The two individuals who have come a long way in life get drifted apart from each other because of some wrong doings of their own. While there are many love stories on TV, this show will definitely give the viewers a taste of what happens to relationships when you become the villain of your own love story. The concept is different because it is an intense and passionate love story which explores the different stages in a relationship between two people moving away from the conventional family drama. Besides the love-hate relation-

Meher is a girl next door. She is a nerd in college who is always surrounded by some book or the other since she loves reading. She has her priorities set straight wanting to make it big in life. She believes in herself and the potential she possesses. She found out early in life that she has to work hard to achieve success and is ready to do that. Meher gets into college with a scholarship on her own merit and despises people who take advantage of the fact that they have a lot of money. How did you prepare for your charac-

RAB NE BANA DI JODI
Was it hard to leave films behind? It was hard in the sense that there people know me, whereas here in Mumbai, not many people know me. So I was contemplating. Because here, I am starting from scratch. But otherwise films and TV are at par and at one point this had to happen so why not now. I’m just happy with the way life is shaping up for me right now.

It all started in February, 2015 when Colors launched the captivating tale of young Ashoka whose sole aim in life was to restore his mother’s dignity. And now, the team of the show, which has claimed No. 2 spot on Indian television, has an all-new reason to rejoice as Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat reaches the 100episode milestone. Siddharth Nigam aka Ashoka said, “Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat, for me, has been an experience of a lifetime..”. Pallavi Subhash, who plays the role of Ashoka’s mother, Dharma says, “Every moment spent on the sets of Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat has been a celebration of sorts. We have become like a family. And as we complete this momentous landmark, I feel that there are only good things to come for the show in the future.” Sameer Dharmadhikari, the actor who essays Emperor Bindusar feels the cast has gotten more together as the show continues. He says, “I have portrayed the character of a king in the past, but the journey that Bindusar has undergone over the months surpasses them all.”
How has the transition from movies to TV been like? Films aren’t as time consuming as TV. Yes, the shooting schedules are hectic but you wrap up in three months. Down south the production of films are faster than the time a Bollywood movie takes. TV on the other hand takes up a lot of your time. It is a medium where you can explore and experiment. My character Meher has a lot of shades, so I’ll have a great time playing this character and I’m glad I’m working on TV.

Yoga has nothing to do with religion: Shilpa Shetty B ollywood diva and fitness freak Shilpa Shetty yesterday said yoga has nothing to do with religion, but is a pure science. "I don't think it would have been declared as an international event if it had anything to do with religion. Yoga is a pure science," she said at the International Yoga Day celebrations at Sree Kanteerava Stadium, organised by the state government here. About her favourite yoga posture, she said, "Each pose has a work on your body but there is no such thing as favourite. But I think all encompassing is the Surya Namaskar. When you do Surya Namaskar it works on every part of your body. You don't need to do anything after that," she said. Shetty also advocated people to prefer yoga over workouts in gyms as the ancient science can be
practiced free of cost. "Yoga aligns your mind, your body, your soul, and if this happens, there is nothing in life that you cannot achieve," she said. Shetty also called upon
people to inculcate yoga among children because they are the future. She did a DVD on yoga to change the pre-conceived perception that yoga is for old people.
Bollywood not my priority now: Tamannaah Bhatia N
ew Delhi: After starring in unsuccessful Bollywood films like 'Himmatwala' and 'Humshakals', actress Tamannaah Bhatia says she has learnt her lesson and now wants to focus on her career in South, where she has always had a strong foothold. The 25-year-old actress, who is gearing up for the release of her next S S Rajamouli-directed two-part multilingual two-part epic drama 'Baahubali', said she is more than happy with Tamil and Telugu films in her kitty. "At the end of it you should be a part of a film that you know eventually people like and you like working in it and you also have something to do in. So, now I have become more choosy than I was ever before,'' she said. "I have done few Hindi films to realise that and most of the films did not do well. So, now I know what's been working for me and what's not working for me. So, that's how I am making my choices now," Tamannaah told PTI. When asked if Bollywood is off her radar now, the actress said, “Not at all. I mean seriously 'Baahubali' of course it's dubbed film but at the same time the projection of it is a proper Hindi film.”

MUMBAI | MONDAY, JUNE 22, 2015 woman, will reinforce your life lesson, and patiently going through this painful embarrassment, will serve as a lifetime reminder of the price one necessarily has to pay for one’s indiscretions. If this experience helps you to live a more mature, responsible and self-aware life, then the embarrassment and awkwardness is a small price for a larger life lesson.
Drunken Exploration
I am a 28-year-old woman working in a multinational company. Last month at an office party I got drunk and got very physically intimate with another office colleague — a woman! I have always been attracted to the opposite sex and am currently in a relationship with my boyfriend since three years. Hence this drunken behaviour of mine has been shocking and certainly embarrassing! Some of my colleagues keep dropping hints that they know what happened that night and pass cruel jokes. The woman who I got intimate with is forcing me to be with her or she'll tell the entire world what happened that night, the first person being my boyfriend. This is causing me much grief. You have proved that it is not only ‘drunken driving’ that is dangerous but also ‘drunken partying’. It’s quite a soup you have got yourself into. Honesty is the best policy in this case. Tell your boyfriend of your ‘drunken deeds’ and express genuine regret and repentance for putting yourself in such a position. Also commit to yourself as well as to him that this will never happen again. The threats of this woman will be

I am a 24-year old Muslim woman, married to a 26-year old IT professional from the same community. My 48-year old widowed mother-in-law stays with us. She is still very beautiful and appears to be much younger than her age. My father-in-law died in 1986. However, my problem is that my mother-in-law, who lost a few fingers of her right hand in an accident and therefore has a weak grip, makes my husband shave her underarms and private parts, as shaving is mandatory in Islam. Can’t she do it with her left hand? I am afraid that since she is still attractive and
starved of a physical relationship, the two can end up having sex. Please advice how to deal with the situation? Clearly and constructively express your discomfort and concern about the same to your husband, without being accusatory in your expression while mentioning your mother-in-law. Tell him that while it is most likely that your fears may never come true, and that neither of them might view the shaving as anything but a matter of convenience, the fact that sexual urges are powerful and can force all discernment out of the conscious mind, cannot be undermined. Give him the suggestion of either you taking over the same task as the daughter-in-law, or then if you are uncomfortable with it, a lady can be employed to do the same under your supervision. Sharing your concerns in a nonaccusatory way and giving specific and workable suggestions as alternatives, which are win-win, could solve this matter. More and more co-op sugar mills are being captured by politicians

MUMBAI | MONDAY, JUNE 22, 2015
NOTES FROM NEW DELHI
An ugly political conspiracy sends coop sugar mills in Maharashtra into an alarming decline
By A.R. Singh
T
he condition of industries in the cooperative sector in Maharashtra is not good. Many sugar mills in the State, including those in Marathwada, have been shut down and their number is increasing every year. Some months ago, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution approved the establishment of almost a hundred new sugar mills in the State. Most of these sugar mills will be in the private sector, while there will be less than half a dozen sugar mills in the cooperative sector. Significantly and ironically, amongst the many applications for setting up private sugar mills, a large number are from politicians who be-
sugar mills. Out of these sugar mills, 66 are lying closed. Amongst the sugar mills that are on the verge of closure, cooperative sugar mills are in larger numbers. In Marathwada and Vidarbha several sugar mills have also closed down due to drought. But under the cover of drought, a big betrayal, a conspiracy is being played out in the case of cooperative sugar mills. It is worth noting that in 2006 the Government had started a new policy for setting up new sugar mills. Earlier, in 1998, the Government had removed the obligation of obtaining a licence for setting up a sugar mill, but under the Sugarcane Control Order there is provision of a distance of 15 km between two sugar mills. Under this Order the area
volved in destroying cooperative sugar mills. At the time this special report was written, elections for the cooperative sugar mills in the State were about to be held. Posters of Vilasrao Deshmukh, Gopinath Munde and many leaders including Sharad Pawar could be seen during this period. Vilasrao Deshmukh and Gopinath Munde have passed away, but their family members now want to lay ‘influential claim’ to cooperative sugar mills. Latur’s Collector and District Magistrate Pandurang Pole revealed that in Maharashtra there are two kinds of sugar mills – cooperative sugar mills and private sugar mills. Cooperative sugar mills are given help from time to time by the administration. On
ing factories are lying closed due to the drought which has affected cotton cultivation here very badly. At the national level, Maharashtra is at number two in cotton production. There are about 1,100 cotton ginning-processing factories in the State. But due to a ban on exports and the severe drought in Marathwada last year only 500 factories were operational in the State. In Gevrai tehsil in Beed district, where once there were queues of farmers selling their cotton, the Samiti market lay deserted last year. Aurangabad is the administrative headquarters of the Aurangabad Division or Marathwada region. It is a centre for auto industries, electronics, medicines, seeds, steel, cotton, paper

DILLI KA BABU Modi gets his man
L
ast week, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi appointed Pradeep Kumar Sinha, the 1977-batch Uttar Pradesh cadre officer, as the new Cabinet Secretary it ended a search that began sometime late last year and also months of speculation among media and other watchers on who would replace Ajit Seth, whose four-year tenure must rank amongst the longest. All Cabinet Secretaries are handpicked. Of the original 77 names, five were short-listed and three names were forwarded to the Prime Minister. The two who lost out to Sinha are Alok Rawat and Rajiv Maharishi. Sinha was to join as OSD in the Cabinet Secretariat to take charge after Seth. Had he not been chosen, he was slated to retire in July. He will now enjoy a two-year fixed term and hopefully longer as in the case of his predecessor. Interestingly, with Sinha’s elevation, Modi also gets more support from the upper echelons of Dilli’s power corridors. Sinha’s sister Rashmi Verma is Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, and is reportedly spearheading Modi sarkar’s drive to implement GST in the country. Her husband, the brilliant Naveen Verma is already in the Cabinet Secretariat as Additional Secretary. Both are believed to be in line for promotion to Secretary-level soon.

came successful in politics through the cooperative movement. But cooperative sugar mills are no longer in favour with politicians who came into politics on the strength of the cooperative movement in Maharashtra. Instead, prominent political families are now more interested in private sugar mills. In fact, the Government of Maharashtra has recently received the Industrial Entrepreneurs Memorandum for setting up almost a hundred new sugar mills. Of these, less than half a dozen will be cooperative sugar mills. All the remaining sugar mills will be under private ownership. If one believes leaders linked to the cooperative sector, this is a conspiracy to weaken cooperative sugar mills. According to them, in the coming days, as in Uttar Pradesh, in Maharashtra too there will be a predominance of private sector sugar mills. A journalist associated with a Marathi daily published from Latur says that this is a warning bell for cooperative sugar mills, because the new sugar mills will make a dent in the sugarcane area. At present there are 224 sugar mills in Maharashtra, of which 173 are cooperative sugar mills, while 51 are private sector
under sugarcane can also be declared a reserved zone. In fact, there are many challenges before cooperative sugar mills. For instance, the machines in these sugar mills have become old and their capacity and efficiency is not upto the mark. This being the case, it is difficult for them to compete with the modern machines in the private sector. Ashok Tawre, who works in a cooperative sugar mill in Usmanabad said that the condition of cooperative sugar mills can be improved, but politicians are no longer interested because they themselves are advocating private sugar mills. Many such politicians, who at the time of elections, talk of strengthening cooperative undertakings are in-
being asked who was responsible for the poor condition of cooperative sugar mills and banks in the State, he replied that in the decades of the fifties and sixties considerable good work was done in politics, with the result that sugar and cotton factories were set up on a large scale in the State. But in the last 20 years, many sugar mills in the cooperative sector and several cottonbased industries have been closed down. In the Marathwada region there are a large number of sugar mills, while cotton cultivation is also carried on at a large scale, but there is not a single yarn factory in this area. There are only factories for making cotton bales. But even these cotton bale mak-
mills and alcohol. However, the majority of these are in the private sector. There were many cotton-based industries as well in Aurangabad but in recent years, they have all been closed down. Several previous Governments have been unsuccessful in removing underdevelopment, backwardness and poverty in Marathwada. People are disappointed with the present Bharatiya Janata Party Government because Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has so far not done anything which could give the people in the State any hope. Some years ago, the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Government (NCP) had formulated a new textile industry policy, in which it was claimed that during the next five years 40 thousand crore rupees would be invested in the State. The then Government had claimed that with this scheme at least 11 lakh people will get employment. In fact however, in those days the Congress coalition Government had got entrapped in the irrigation scam and many other scams. Therefore, the new textile industry policy remained confined to files and the people of the State did not benefit from it at all.
Central Govt favours private sugar mills s per the Industrial Entre- sugar mills in various districts A preneurs Memorandums in Maharashtra. Of these, 60 are recorded with the Central Min- in the private sector and only istry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, approval was given for setting up 77 sugar mills in Maharashtra. A glance at the memorandum of June 30, 2014 reveals that approval was given for 64
four in the cooperative sector. In the September 30, 2014 memorandum, 13 new sugar mills are mentioned and all of them will be in the private sector, with the cooperative sector totally disregarded.
ear its recent first anniversary in office, there were murmurs that the Modi sarkar seemed to be slowing down its efforts to galvanise the bureaucracy. Several important positions remained vacant and were affecting decision-making. But suddenly the Government seems to have got its second wind. It’s raining appointments and transfers in Delhi. In probably a first, the Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) cleared 17 Secretary-level transfers. While major postings of Additional Secretary and Joint Secretary levels are routine, bulk appointments at the Secretary-level are rare, and came as a surprise to many. The latest overhaul of the senior bureaucracy involves appointments to key Ministries as well as lateral transfers. Among the 17 officials affected are new Commerce Secretary Rita Teotia, power secretary Pradeep Kumar Pujari (who replaces P.K. Sinha who has been named Cabinet Secretary) and new Civil Aviation secretary Rajiv Nayan Choubey. Teotia and Pujari, interestingly, are 1981-batch Gujarat cadre officers. The State has seen a steady exodus of officers to Delhi since Modi moved to Race Course Road. The Prime Minister’s Office is fairly replete with Gujarat babus, many of whom have worked closely with Modi during his Gujarat days.

P
rasar Bharati CEO Jawahar Sircar is reportedly upset with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting over interference by the Ministry in what he considers pure Prasar Bharati’s turf. The provocation is due to the launch of Doordarshan’s new channel Kisan, which will be run by the Ministry rather than the public broadcaster. Sircar has apparently strongly protested in a letter to Prasar Bharati chairman A. Surya Prakash and sought an end to the “confusion”. But Sircar has another grouse against the Ministry as well. In what many described as a sudden move, the Ministry announced the appointment of Information Service Officer Veena Jain as Director-General of Doordarshan News, with additional designation of Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Ministry. — By Dilip Cherian

MUMBAI | MONDAY, JUNE 22, 2015
S
PIELBERG (AUSTRIA) (AFP): Nico Rosberg celebrated his 30th birthday with a third win in four races on Sunday when he beat Mercedes team-mate and series leader Lewis Hamilton to triumph in an incident-filled Austrian Grand Prix. The German driver, who left his twenties behind on Saturday, repeated his 2014 success when he came home a comfortable 3.8 seconds clear of the defending world champion and reduced his lead from 17 points to 10. After eight of this year's 19 races, Briton Hamilton, who picked up a five seconds penalty in the race, has 169 and Rosberg, who won last year's Austrian event, 159. It was Rosberg's third win of the season and the 11th of his career. Brazilian Felipe Massa came third, 17 seconds adrift of the two Mercedes men, sixtenths of a second ahead of four- time champion Sebast-
ian Vettel of Ferrari, Finn Valtteri Bottas in the second Williams and German Nico Hulkenberg, who one week after winning in the Le Mans 24 Hours race, finished sixth for Force India. Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado was seventh for Lotus ahead of Dutch teenager Max Verstappen of Toro Rosso, Mexican Sergio Perez in the second Force India and Australian Daniel Ricciardo, who picked up a point for Red Bull, after starting down the grid. The race began with drama as Rosberg sped into a first corner lead and almost immediately a spectacular collision between two-time champion Fernando Alonso and 2007 champion Kimi Raikkonen caused the race to be halted with the introduction of a safety car. Alonso's car landed on top of Raikkonen's car. Both drivers were unhurt and walked away, shaken but not injured. It was another hugely dis-
appointing day for the struggling McLaren-Honda team. On top of Alonso's first lap crash, Briton Jenson Button had to make an early retirement in the other car with engine problems. In dry and mild conditions in the Styrian Alps, Rosberg made a perfect start as the lights went out, drawing alongside pole-sitter Hamilton to take the lead at the first corner. The world champion attempted to re-gain the lead at the next two turns, but Rosberg defended adroitly while, behind them, a serious collision involving Raikkonen and Alonso caused the race to be stopped and run behind the safety car until the debris was cleared. Alonso's McLaren Honda appeared to crash into Raikkonen's Ferrari from the rear and rose to land on top of the Finn's car as they skewed into the barriers. Both men were unhurt and walked clear from the debris.

Andheri YMCA, Mulund Gym retain titles

espite an inspirational performance by Rajasthan’s No 2 Pankaj Vishwakarma for Goregaon Sports Club, defending champions Andheri YMCA kept their hold on the premier division honours with a 3-2 win on the concluding day of the MSDTTA InterClub table tennis league, held at Khar Gymkhana in Mumbai today.
Likewise, holders Mulund Gymkhana once again emerged best in the women’ division with a 3-2 win over Santacruz Gymkhana. Divya Deshpande’s heat-warming performance for Santacruz Gymkhana, however took some shine off their success. Divya remained unbeaten right through the league. Pankaj Vishwarama, who was unbeaten in all the pre-
mier division matches, had some consolation after seeing his club finish second best ahead of last year’s finalist Santacruz Gymkhana. Coach Suhas Rane, heartened by junior Varun Sheth’s unexpected win over seasoned Dinkar Shelarka in the opener, went all out to win both the ties to help JLTTA beat Gomantak SC 3-1 to bag the second division honours.
Hulkenberg comes up with season-best 6th in Force India’s good show S
PIELBERG: Sahara Force India enjoyed its only second double-points finish of the 2015 Formula One seasons as Nico Hulkenberg came up with his season-best sixth place finish while Sergio Perez ended the Austrian Grand Prix ninth, here today. Before this race, Force India had a double-points finish at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix but has been struggling since then. A seventh place at Melbourne was Hulkenberg’s best result before this sea-
son. Hulkenberg had started fifth from the grid while Perez was way back in the 16th place. The 10 points gathered from the race has helped the team move up to fifth place in the constructor’s championship. Hulkenberg, who came into the race after winning the historic Le Mans 24 Hours, said he was very pleased with sixth place. “Going into the race we always knew it would be difficult to keep the Williams of Bottas behind me, so bring-
ing the car home in sixth was probably the maximum we could achieve,” the burly German said. “I had some good wheelto-wheel battles with him and we swapped places a few times, but it was hard to match their absolute pace. Overall it’s been a great weekend: I found a nice rhythm and I have been very happy with the performance of the car. With Checo in the points as well, it’s been an excellent weekend for us,” he added.

NTWERP: India’s 3-2 win over France in their opening match of the FIH Hockey World League Semifinals was unconvincing but head coach Paul van Ass said that he was satisfied with the result. Van Ass said he had not expected the campaign opener to be an easy outing and his boys managed to earn full points by scoring a late winner in a Pool A match. “Winning the first match is the important thing. What was significant was not that we allowed the rivals too much space inside our territory, but the fact that we managed to score the third goal and earn full points,” said van Ass after the match. “There is always some unpredictability at the start of any tournament,” he added. India scored the winner two minutes from the final hooter through Ramandeep Singh to pull off a 3-2 win over France and begin their campaign on a winning note here last night. Ramandeep lunged forward to slam the ball into the France net in the 58th minute
after the scores were levelled at 2-2, courtesy the spadework of captain Sardar Singh at the KHC Dragons Stadium. The French were shattered at conceding the late match-winner to India. France’s livewire striker Brisac said it was a massive disappointment to concede the goal with just two minutes left on the clock. “We were confident and we played a good game, but there is no consolation for conceding the goal so late in the match,” said Brisac. “We wanted at least one point from this game and came very close to securing that,” he added. India next play Poland on June 23. In the other Pool A match last night, Pakistan beat unheralded Poland 2-1. For Pakistan, this tournament is the last opportunity to qualify for the 2016 Olympics, having lost the Asian Games gold medal to India who became the first team to secure passage to the Rio Games.

Belgian captain Lieselotte van Lindt scored the lone goal of the match in the 35th minute to help the hosts clinched a 1-0 win against the Indian eves. “I would have expected India to go all out into the attack in the last quarter as they had a lot to lose in this match, but it did not happen,” said Kina. “I must say I was surprised by India not throwing everything into the attack. They were a goal down and would not have gained anything by the score-line staying that way,” he added. Belgium were a bit jittery ahead of the encounter, which was considered key to securing a spot in the 2016 Rio Olympics that will feature 12 teams. Brazil will appeal Neymar’s Copa America suspension S
ANTIAGO: Brazil said it will appeal Neymar’s four-game suspension that rules him out of the rest of the Copa America. The Brazilian confederation’s “legal department will file a counterpoint to Neymar’s sanction,” coach Dunga said in a news conference in Santiago. Dunga said Neymar was hugely important in football, and therefore the sanctions against him were huge, too. “We don’t want anything in favor or against, just what’s fair,” Dunga said.
A CONMEBOL disciplinary panel ruled on Friday that he must sit out four games for his conduct in a 1-0 loss to Colombia on Wednesday, when he was sent off after the final whistle. He was also fined USD 10,000. While Neymar dazzled in the opening win over Peru, he failed to shine and appeared nervous against Colombia. He clashed with opponents, and constantly complained to Chilean referee Enrique Osses. After the game, Neymar said it was all caused by a “weak referee.” Neymar received a yellow card during the game, and second of the tournament, which would’ve been enough to keep him from playing on Sunday in the key group match against Venezuela. “Neymar was hit 20 times during the game. After, he lost control and touched the ball with his hand, and he got a yellow card. Is this fair?” Dunga asked. “Just like (Alexis) Sanchez, (Lionel) Messi, and (Angel) Di Maria, these players have to be protected from so many fouls.” Neymar was red-carded after apparently kicking the ball toward Colombia’s Pablo Armero after the ref blew for fulltime. He also appeared to head-butt another player who came to confront him. Alberto Lozada, a member of the disciplinary committee, said Neymar received a tough sanction because he confronted and verbally abused the ref before going into the changing rooms. “The referee’s report says that Mr. Neymar was waiting for him to insult him,” Lozada told The Associated Press.

ANTIAGO: Argentina marked Lionel Messi’s 100th cap with an unconvincing 1-0 win over Jamaica to reach the Copa America quarter-finals as group winners as holders Uruguay advanced to the last eight. Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain rifled home the only goal for Argentina as the tournament favorites downed the Reggae Boyz in Vina del Mar to clinch top spot in Group B ahead of Paraguay and Uruguay. But it was another patchy performance from the 2014 World Cup quarter-finalists, who struggled to break down a team ranked 62 places below them in the latest FIFA standings. Argentina coach Gerardo Martino blamed weariness for his side’s disjointed performance, and said his side were looking forward to some rest in the six-day break before next Friday’s quarter-final. “The first half was okay. We played fine and we scored quickly and created five or six chances to score,” Martino said. “At the end though it was a bit tedious but we did what was necessary. Physically we struggled a bit in the second half.” Argentina will play either Ecuador or the third placed team from Group C in the last eight. “There are things to fix,” Martino said. “We’ve got six days’ rest now before the quarter-finals and I think we need them. “We’ve had three matches in a week so it’s been a tough schedule.” Jamaica’s players meanwhile celebrated a brave performance against one of the powerhouses of international football. At the final whistle, striker Deshorn Brown posed for a selfie with Argentina skipper Messi, who was unable to mark his century of caps with a goal. The Barcelona superstar meanwhile was happy to swap the jersey from his 100th international appearance with Jamaican midfielder Jobi McAnuff, who plays in the fourth tier of the English football league system. Jamaica captain Rodolph Austin said he was proud of his team’s performances in Chile, as they headed home from the tournament after three consecutive 1-0 defeats in the first round. Restricting Argentina to only Higuain’s 11th-minute strike was a particular source of satisfaction for Jamaica, one of two

much respect in the first half and we didn’t come at them and press them enough,” the midfielder said. “But to come here and lose by only one goal against a side like Argentina is a good for us.”
Brazil aim to bounce back
Sunday sees the conclusion of the group stage with Brazil aiming to bounce back with victory over Venezuela in the wake of their stormy 1-0 defeat to Colombia. The Brazilians will be without striker Neymar, sensationally axed from the remainder of the tournament on Friday after receiving a four-match ban for headbutting an opponent and verbally abusing the referee in the Colombia game. Brazil coach Dunga said Saturday the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) was studying the possibility of lodging an appeal. “CBF legal experts will respond to all the action taken against Neymar,” Dunga told a press conference. “We don’t want anything in our favour, we don’t want anything against us, we just want it to be balanced,” he added.
Earlier Saturday, Uruguay made sure of their place in the last eight from Group B after battling to a 1-1 draw with Paraguay in a rematch of the 2011 final. Uruguay secured the point they needed to advance after taking the lead through Jose Maria Gimenez before Paraguay equalised on the stroke of half-time with a goal from Lucas Barrios. Paraguay were already guaranteed a place in the knockout rounds after results elsewhere on Friday, when Ecuador’s win over Mexico in Group A ensured they would qualify. Uruguay took the lead after 29 minutes through Gimenez, who rose high to meet a corner from Carlos Sanchez with a powerful downward header. But Paraguay hit back shortly before half-time with a set-piece goal of their own, Barrios heading home Edgar Benitez’s corner.
Harry Kewell reflects on Leeds United days of new Liverpool man James Milner L
ONDON: Kewell was a Leeds United regular when Milner broke onto the scene in 2002 and became the Premier League’s youngest ever goalscorer later that year. Thirteen years later and Milner is following in Kewell’s footsteps after agreeing to join Liverpool on a free transfer from Manchester City this month. And the former Australia international believes manger Brendan Rodgers has a steal in 29-year-old Milner.
“I think it’s a good signing,” Kewell told liverpoolfc.com. “James obviously came through when I was at Leeds and I always knew he had that kind of talent. “He’s got that grit between his teeth, first and foremost. He’s got that hunger and desire. “Obviously when he left Leeds he played for a few other teams and he did well, but he didn’t get to the potential that I thought he could have done. “But then going to Manchester
City, he kind of just rose up that little bit more and put his name back up there to being one of the best England players again. “For Liverpool to snatch him up, I think he’s going to do wonders. “I think he can come in there and get respect straight away off the players because he’s been there and done it - he’s won titles, so he knows what it takes. “I think that’s a smart signing by Brendan to bring in, to hopefully help the team.”

Lose series as Mustafizur Rahaman claims six Indian scalps
M
IRPUR: India today slumped to a new low as they suffered their first ever ODI series defeat against Bangladesh following an embarrassing six-wicket defeat in the second cricket Onedayer that gave the hosts an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, here. Young Bangladeshi paceman Mustafizur Rehman (6/43) yet again tormented the Indian batsmen with his second successive six-wicket haul as the visitors folded for 200 in 45 overs. The 19-year-old young leftarm pacer from remote Satkhira village became only the second bowler in ODI history to record two five-wicket hauls in his first two matches. Zimbabwe pacer Brian Vitori is the only other bowler to get two fifers in as many ODIs first up. Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan made a useful contribution of 53 runs while skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (47) looked horribly out of touch in his innings. The only significant stand of the Indian innings was between Dhawan and Virat Kohli (23) as they added 74 for the second wicket. Due to rain interruption late in the Indian innings, the hosts were set a target of 200 in 47 overs and the Bangladeshi went about their job fearlessly overhauling the total withe nine overs to spare. It was highly disappointing show by the star-studded Indians, who were outclassed in all departments of the game by the spirited Bangladeshis who are now on a roll with a string of good performances. Earlier Indian batsmen once again struggled against young left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahaman as his six for 43 enabled Bangladesh to skittle out the two-time World Champions for a paltry 200 in 45 overs.
three left without troubling the scorers including Ambati Rayudu, who was a surprise replacement of Ajinkya Rahane. The Indian opener though was guilty of playing a loose shot away from his body and sliced it to point. A brief rain interruption did not deter the batsmen from going for their runs but Nasir trapped Kohli leg before in the 13th over.
