A huge rally at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi which was addressed by leaders of the Janata Parivar, on Monday.

EW DELHI: Pitching for larger Opposition unity, six constituents of the erstwhile Janata Parivar on Monday shared the dais at a 'Mahadharna' slamming BJP's 'divisive' politics and accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of 'telling lies' and 'not fulfilling' poll promises on black money. Leaders of the splinter groups including SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav (MSY), RJD supremo Lalu Prasad and JD(U)'s Nitish Kumar called for 'sinking old prejudices' and promised to 'script a new story' in the Indian politics by ousting BJP, re-

ports PTI. Tariq Anwar and D.P. Tripathi from the NCP also shared the dais while Mamata Banerjee sent a letter of support to the leaders through Derek 'O' Brien, who however did not turn up at the venue. The agitation programme, which saw the attendance of former Prime Minister HD Devegowda of JD (S), Dushyant Chautala of Indian National Lok Dal and SJP's Kamal Morarka is being dubbed as the 'first solid step' towards the merger of the parties. The leaders recalled that the Janata Parivar had

formed three governments in alliance in the past and reminded Modi dispensation that they have got 'only 31 per cent of votes' and will have to 'go back' if they did not fulfil the promises. "From our identities as separate parties, we have to merge in a single party. An agreement has been reached on this. Mulayam Singh has to work out the modalities. Let us take a vow now. ...We should contact even others. Let us make a comprehensive Opposition. We should all come together. Setting aside Continued on pg 2 «

lmost four days after the murder of an 18 montold baby girl, the Crime Branch Unit IV has solved the case after arresting the paramour of the infant's mother who wanted to get rid of the baby as she was proving to be an impediment in their affair. Cops found the crucial lead in a CCTV footage from a nearby building where the man was seen with the child on the night of her disappearance.

The police on Monday claimed to have cracked the kidnap-cum-murder case of the infant with the arrest of a catering worker who is the paramour of the victim's mother. Police sources, said the arrested accused has been identified as Mohammed Azgar Rehman and he was booked for kidnapping and murdering the infant, Afreen Shaikh, whose decomposed body was found last ThursContinued on pg 2 «

he organisers of the annual Kala Ghoda cultural festival and residents of the South Mumbai area, where it is held, on Monday told the Bombay High Court that they could not find any amicable solution to their dispute and the court itself may resolve it. Local residents have filed a petition opposing the festival, citing problems such as traffic congestion, piling up of garbage, etc. Last week, the court had asked both the parties to resolve the issue amicably. The festival organisers yesterday also told the division bench headed by Justice V.M. Kanade that they were ready to reduce the number of stalls from 110 to 79 and make proper security arrangements. The court was also informed that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (Museum), located in the vicinity, was ready to give a part of its premises for the stalls. The court yesterday directed the representatives of Mumbai Police, Mumbai Fire Brigade and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to remain present on Tuesday for the next hearing.

"As Chandini was allegedly avoiding him after conceiving the child and began devoting time to her child and husband, Rehman decided to eliminate the baby," said another officer. On December 14 at about 4 am, Rehman, who was in drunk, took the child to an isolated location before banging her on the ground, causing her death, police said. "The accused was handed over to Sion police which formally placed him under arrest," officer Bhole said. RJD president Lalu Prasad Yadav whispers to SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav during the protest rally by Janata Parivar at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Monday.

Continued from pg 1 « our prejudices, we want to form a strong Opposition," Kumar said. Attacking the government on several issues, Lalu Prasad said, "an attempt is being made to persistently target Mamata Banerjee". He said that while people talk about the differences between him and Nitish Kumar, "we have come together now". Humming a Hindi film song, he said that it's time to forget things of the past and they will script a new chapter now. Playing audio clips of previous speeches of Modi, the then BJP President Rajnath Singh and Baba Ramdev about bringing back black money, Kumar, Prasad, Sharad Yadav and Mulayam Singh Yadav asked "what happened to the promise that Rs.15 lakh will reach the pockets of the poor once black money is brought back." "You should ask every BJP leader whether they will give you the money in cash or cheque. It is most unfortunate that the Prime Minister of the country is telling lies," Kumar said. He asked Modi to "fulfil the promises that you had made. Otherwise, you will have to vacate the chair and go back." In the earlier two meetings among leaders of these parties, the name of the new entity was proposed as "Samajwadi Janata Dal" but no final decision either regarding the name or the flag of the en-

tity has been taken, the sources said. At the agitation programme, leaders tried to reach out to the youth reminding them that the promised employment to them is yet to happen. Nitish Kumar said that the youth feel 'most cheated' today. Mulayam Singh Yadav while crediting the youth for bringing Samajwadi Party rule in Uttar Pradesh urged them to come together to change the NDA dispensation at the Centre. Young voters are believed to have played a key role in the victory of Modi in the Lok Sabha polls. Kumar accused Modi of "forgetting all promises" that he made during the Lok Sabha polls including about bringing back black money, giving 50 per cent more crop price to farmers than their production cost and giving employment to youth. "Today if somebody is feeling the most cheated it is the youth. When bank accounts of people under Jandhan Yojana were opened there was much publicity. Now it has come to fore that there is no money transaction in 5 crore of the total 8 crore accounts under the scheme and there will be no accident benefit. "Even if you did not give Rs 15 lakh each, you could have at least deposited Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 in their accounts so that they would have availed this benefit," Kumar

said taking a jibe at Modi as he sought to contrast the statements made by the Prime Minister before the Lok Sabha polls and after the BJP came to power at the Centre. Anticipating the appointment of Narendra Modi as the BJP's prime ministerial candidate, Kumar the then Bihar Chief Minister had decided to walk out of the NDA alliance in June last year bringing to an end 17 year-old ties with the BJP soon after Modi was made his party's campaign committee Chairman. BJP led by Modi decimated both JD(U) and RJD in Lok Sabha polls in Bihar necessitating the coming together of the old friend turned foes Prasad and Kumar. Sources said that while the grand merger of the former constituents could take time, the beginning would be made with the merger of Prasad's RJD and Kumar's JD-U, the process for which will kick-start soon after as assembly elections in Bihar are schedueld next year. JD(U) President Sharad Yadav, a prime mover behind the unity moves, attacked the NDA government for "drifting" from its poll plank of Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas. "You have not got the mandate for this Kamandal Baba, Chimta Baba and Balti Baba. You had not sought votes for them. If you think that everybody should adopt the same religion. Seek a fresh mandate on it in elections," Yadav said.

R-Day Parade from Marine Drive to Shivaji Park Continued from pg 1 « celebration and a colourful parade of three armed forces – the army, navy and air force. Besides, they demonstrated their striking capacities and also daring displays. Officials said that changing the venue will certainly affect the performance. So both officials from the state government and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) are pressing the contractors to finish the work. The BMC had entrusted a private contractor with the construction and reconstruct project of the Marine Drive road, one of the few wonders of British engineering. Marine Drive road was constructed in 1930s by the British government. Over the eight decades, the road bore traffic of

tens of thousands of vehicles and VIP convoys almost every day. In recent years, the road had developed some cracks and civic engineers failed to find a solution to it. So they decided to reconstruct the road. Of the total 4.5 km road, about 1 km road was planned to be freshly constructed with cement concrete technology and the remaining 3.5 km road was planned to be reconstructed with dense bitumen (DBM) technology. In BDM technology, existing surface is supposed to be scratched out and a 40 mm layer of water proof mastic on it is applied. According to officials, the total contract was worth Rs 55 crore for redevelopment of 5 km road. The road was supposed to be ready for the RD Parde. However, the road

will not completed until six months from now. The civic officials justified that the on-going work was hindered due to multiple issues including the delayed permission from the traffic police and that work was stopped at different occasions like swearing-in ceremony of the new Chief Minister. BMC Standing Committee Chairman said, “I was told that this work will be stopped in the second week of January to facilitate the Mumbai Marathon. But due to disturbances, the work cannot be completed before January 26.” According to officials, in the present scenario, the parade will either be shifted to Shivaji Park or the participants will perform on rough roads.

UNICEF India introduces ‘Mr Poo’ ad campaign Imagine waking up to a poop mascot one morning. It doesn’t stop there. Wait until the poop chases you until you’re out of your breath. UNICEF has developed a very interesting and bothersome advertisement to help remind Indians to defecate in proper

open pits daily. Only half of the population actually does its business in toilets. Maria Fernandez, a UNICEF campaign coordinator in India, explained the campaign’s aims: “Urban or rural, poo is all around us, on our playgrounds and outside

In the end, the people make a huge toilet bowl to flush down all the poop. India has the largest open defecation rate in the world, according to Poo2Loo — 65 million kilograms of poop is deposited in

So the campaign tries to create noise so those who actually have toilets understand the issue and do something about it.” This problem of pooping everywhere is a large health issue in India because it causes water contamination, and further results in diarrhea and other illnesses. This problem causes death of many children.

The 'elves' that staff these factories are mainly migrant labourers, working 12 hours a day for a maximum of £200 to £300 a month – and they’re not really sure what Christmas is. In the process, they end up dusted from head to toe in fine crimson powder. Packaged in plastic bags, gleaming red snowflakes hang alongside a wealth of other festive paraphernalia across the town in the Yiwu International Trade Market, aka China Commodity City, a 4m sq m wonder-world of plastic art.

Late yesterday night the young Sena scion tweeted from his twitter handle “anyone else speaking, unless authorised by Party President, on Party Policy is not official and is in purely personal capacity”. The move by some Sena watchers is a calculated attempt by the party to project him for the 2017 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation elections slated next year. Assuming a bigger political role, Aditya Thackeray is to inspect road works undertaken by the BMC today evening from 8.30 pm onwards. The young Thackeray scion will be accompanied by BMC Mayor, Standing Committee chair- Aditya Thackeray, chief, Yuva Sena.

man, Sena BMC group leader, Shivsainiks and Yuva Sena leaders. His inspection drive will commence from Thakkars Hall near Girgaum Chowpatty and will cover areas of Breach Candy, Marine Drive, Nariman Point, Malabar Hill, Wadala, Parel, Juhu and other parts of Mumbai. It may be recalled that his father, Sena president Uddhav Thackeray had in May earlier this year undertaken pre-monsoon inspection drive of major nullah desilting works. But what raised the eyebrows of many political observers was his father deputing him along with senior Sena leader Subhash Desai on September 19 to hold seat sharing talks with BJP's in-charge for state assembly elections O P Mathur. The move was seen by BJP leaders as an apparent snub and later proved to be the cause that led to the two saffron allies snapping their two decade old alliance as the talks remained inconclusive. The Sena however had defended sending the Yuva Sena chief for talks with the senior BJP leader.

Fadnavis set to revive Zunka Bhakar Scheme By Prashant Hamine

T

he Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena-led state government is likely to revive its much touted Zunka Bhakar Scheme (ZBS) which it had launched during its earlier regime in July 1995. The issue of problems faced by the Zunka Bhakar stall owners in Mumbai was raised by Ashish Shelar (BJP) through point of propriety in the Legislative Assembly yesterday. During its previous regime, the Sena-BJP government had launched the scheme where the people especially daily wage workers would get a spicy porridge made out of gram flour and two bhakars made out of jowar flour at a subsidised rate of just Rs 1 per plate. Raising the issue after the question hour, he said that the previous Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)-led Democratic Front government (DF) had changed the name of the scheme to Annadatta Aahar scheme. He said that the previous DF government left the Zunka Bhakar stalls out of the purview of the scheme. Subsequently some of the Zunka Bhakar stalls were relocated elsewhere or were served eviction notices under section 314 by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). To which Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured Shelar that the

government will look into the issue at the earliest. It may be recalled that the previous Sena-BJP government of 199599 had launched the scheme in July 1995 amid much fanfare. As per the then scheme, the stalls measuring 180 sq ft were given to unemployed youth, women cooperative groups and voluntary organisations. The stalls were expected to serve a plate of a spicy porridge made out of gram flour and two bhakars made out of jowar flour, at a subsidised rate of just Re 1, to about 200 people a day. The government then was subsidising the scheme and during the Sena-BJP government regime about 2,000 such stalls came up all over Maharashtra. But over the years the scheme began putting a financial burden on the state exchequer and the stall owners later began renting out billboard space for advertising and also began selling other eatables. Soon after coming to power in April 1999, the DF government withdrew the government subsidy to the scheme and in March 2007 scrapped the scheme altogether. In the intervening period the stall owners moved the Bombay High Court and later the case reached the Supreme Court. Finally the DF government canceled the licenses of about 801 Zunka Bhakar stalls.

Issue of review committee for Mumbai rocks Assembly By A Special Correspondent

T

he issue of creating a review committee for Mumbai rocked the Assembly yesterday as the Congress and NCP members were up in arms and alleged that the government is trying to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra. The uproar in the house started when Speaker Haribhau Bagade did not allow Jitendra Awhad (NCP) and others to raise the issue through the Motion of Propriety. The House was

adjourned for 15 minutes by Speaker Bagade. Awhad said that he had served a notice under rule 57 for suspension of question hour to take up the issue of the separate committee proposed to look after and speed up projects for Mumbai. He even tried to raise the issue again during the adjournment motion. Awhad said, “NCP chief Sharad Pawar had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking him to decline the offer of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to

head the committee.” Awhad was joined by both Congress and NCP members, who trooped into the Well of the House and started raising slogans. “Mumbai var charcha jhalich pahije” (there must be a discussion on Mumbai). When the House reassembled, there was no improvement in the situation. The Congress and NCP members remained in the Well of the House and continued slogan-shouting. The Speaker tried to convince

them to go back to their seats, but they were not in a mood to listen to him. Bagade then resumed the business of the House. Later, Congress and NCP members staged a walkout. Meanwhile, on the other hand, the legislative Council yesterday witnessed uproarious scenes over the issue of alleged leakage of Kelkar committee report in a newspaper and amid the din Congress members staged a walkout from the House. Manikrao Thakre raised the

issue of developmental backlog in the state's Vidarbha and Marathwada regions and demanded a detailed discussion on it. He also demanded that the government must table the Kelkar committee report. It may be recalled that the Kelkar committee, constituted in May 2011, studied the regional imbalance with regard to irrigation, agriculture, education, business, industries, self-employment and private investment. Gulzar Azmi, secretary, JUH

By Zuber Ansari

T

he JJ Marg police has registered an FIR against fugitive gangster Ravi Pujari for allegedly issuingdeath threats to an office-bearer of the Maharashtra unit of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind (JUH). About ten days ago, Ravi Pujari allegedly placed a threatening call to Gulzar Azmi, secretary of the JUH. “Pujari was subsequently booked under the IPC sections 506(2) (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 507 (criminal intimidation by anonymous communication) for making death threats over the phone to Gulzar Azmi,” said Anil Madvi, senior inspector at J J Marg police station. The Mumbai Police Crime Branch is conducting a parallel investigation. Azmi had complained in writing to the police on December 13 alleging that a man claiming to be Pujari rang him up at the office landline the previous day and threatened him. Azmi had given a written complaint not only against Pujari, but also against BJP legislator Ashish Shelar.

Azmi alleges that he received the call after Shelar, who is the BJP's Mumbai unit chief, had made certain comments on the floor of the House during the Maharashtra Assembly session in Nagpur. In the first week of December, Shelar had stated that the JUH collects "huge" donations to fight cases for people arrested on terror charges and should be banned as it "promotes" terrorism. The MLA also alleged that the outfit has links with the Shakeel gang. The non-profit organisation rubbished all the charges saying that they were completely "false, baseless and defamatory". Azmi claimed that his outfit had been legally assisting many innocent people since several years, but only after Shelar linked them with the underworld and demanded its ban did gangster Pujari issue death threats to him. On the issue of police not booking Shelar, Azmi said today, "I am consulting my lawyers. The police have said they are investigating the matter and if required, other conspirators, if there are any, will also be booked in the later stage."

A tea vendor who acted as the duo’s collection agent was caught red handed while accepting Rs.30,000 as the first instalment. The next to follow was Sanjay Hemant Patange (39), a talathi attached to Bhayandar revenue circle. On November 4, Patange was caught red handed while accepting Rs.5,000 as first instalment towards bribe demanded to carry out official land related documentation work of a local villager. On November 20, the ACB registered a case against two police personnel – Adhik Ghadge and Bhimrao

However in this case the traps failed to materialise, prompting the ACB to lodge a FIR after verifying the authenticity of the complaint. This followed the arrest of another police constable, Mukund Laxman Khirade (33) who landed in the ACB trap while accepting Rs.7,000 from the complainant to help an accused procure bail in a criminal case. While all the accused have been booked under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, most of the cases are in the advanced stage of investigation.

Congress corporator disqualified from MBMC His caste certificate was found to be invalid; civic chief orders recovery of salaries and allowances paid to him By Suresh Golani

he Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) on Monday disqualified the membership of Congress corporator Farid Qureshi, after his caste certificate was invalidated by the divisional caste certificate committee. Apart from passing the disqualification orders, civic chief Subhash Laakhe, has also directed the administration to recover the amount which Qureshi received as salaries and allowances during his tenure. Qureshi, had successfully wrested ward No. 32 on a Congress ticket from Mira Road, which was reserved for candidates under the Backward Class citizen category. However, challenging the validity of Qureshi’s caste certificate, his BJP rival Dr. Suresh Yeole had filed a Civic Writ Petition in the High Court. In accordance with section 8 of the Maharashtra Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, De-notified Tribe (Vimukta Jatis), Nomadic Tribe and Other Backward Category (Regulation of Issuance and Verification) of Caste Certificate Act, 2000, a divisional bench comprising Justice M.S. Oka

Farid Qureshi, corporator-MBMC and Justice M.S. Sonak, had set aside the validity of the caste certificate in January, 2014 ordering the scrutiny committee to expedite the process and pass a fresh order within a time frame of four months. The orders followed after Qureshi failed to establish that he belonged to the OBC category. The authorities will also recover emblem blocks used for attesting official documents and other official purposes — from the disqualified corporator.

Winter session of parliament wash out

ODAY is the last day of the winT ter session of parliament. The big question is whether the BJP government will be able to pass crucial Insurance and coal bills. Yesterday, discussion on an amended Lokpal bill went on amidst noise in the House. Is the government adopting new tactics to pass the bill? It is possible to conduct the business of the House even if there is a ruckus. Members in the government can move the bill, make speeches and the speaker can pass the bill by voice vote. It is possible the government is thinking about taking some desperate steps to pass the bill. There is an urgency in this regard because the government wants to attract foreign investments in insurance sector before President Obama's arrival in Delhi for the Republic Day. The government is certain to take the ordinance route if it fails to pass the bill in parliament. The opposition was quite unreasonable when it asked the Prime Minister to come to the House and make a statement on an incident in Agra: The conversion of some Muslims were made – attracting public attention. The government was prepared to hold a discussion on the issue but the Prime Minister would not come and make a statement because the BJP was not involved at all with the incident.

HERE was a genuine pain in India over the mindless killing of schoolchildren at Peshawar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked all Indian schoolchildren to maintain a two-minute silence in memory of the lives lost in Pakistan. He readily offered any assistance that India could render to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Such gestures transcend borders. I wish this atmosphere could sustain between the two countries. Unfortunately, the civil society in India and Pakistan don’t feel concerned over their youth nourishing enmity towards each other. They, including those from Bangladesh, are the best of friends outside the shores of the subcontinent. But, in their own country, they are always in the midst of schemes to hit the other hard without realizing that hostilities may become inevitable.

ularly Pakistan. When the ‘converted’ say that they were coerced into and promised ration card or the BPL card that gives the poor the essentials at a subsided price, things seem to be murkier than one would imagine. That fundamentalism is spreading in Pakistan does not surprise me. A state having such blasphemous laws as can kill a liberal Punjab governor with no action against the murderers is lengthening the shadows. It is unfortunate but when even the liberal voices are mute because of consequences, the fanatics are bound to grow in number and in impudence. The real point of worry is what is happening to India. The country represents a democratic, secular polity and it is respected for this all over the world. Unfortunately, New Delhi is rapidly become a goalpost of Hin-

Kashmir problem

to mean any direction. India should have taken the initiative to develop the region on the whole. But when the ideology is sought to be based on parochialism, it is neither pervasive nor egalitarian in content. The common man feels as much isolated and marginalized as he has been all these years since Independence. The ruling party may have changed at the Centre but the political culture has not. We continue to be feudal in our outlook. This trait transcends other considerations. It does not go well with the democratic temperament. But it is there and has not undergone any perceptible change in the past. Those who come to power become dictators in action. Even when they profess that power is with the people they are using it figuratively and not realistically because they, a very few, serve the country.

Nehru’s idea

The Pakistanis often say that once the Kashmir problem is solved both sides will live as friends. I have my doubts. Kashmir, according to me, is a symptom, not the disease. The disease is their mistrust in each other. Even by some miracle if the Kashmir issue is solved, some other problem will crop up because of the suspicion. The Indians and the Pakistanis are carrying on their enmity to everywhere they come into contact. It is sad that even cultural events suffer from the same thinking. The qawals from Pakistan could not sing at the Delhi Press Club, which is supposed to be liberal. On the other hand, India was ridiculed with obscene gestures by the Pakistani players after defeating India in a recent hockey match. The visiting Pakistani MPs not meeting the Lok Sabha Speaker, although the Indian MP who arranged the meeting with the Speaker did not check whether she was free at that time. The Indian MPs should have made amends in some other manner but there was no such effort even for the courtesy sake. Such incidents indicate that even after 70 years of partition, the two countries have not settled down to normal courtesies, much less friendship. The future too does not look bright when enmity seems revealing the Hindu identity. Yesterday it was Sanskrit, the language of Hindu scriptures. Today, it is conversion. The conversion of some Muslims has only downgraded India in the eyes of the world, partic-

Modi has, in the process, buried Nehru’s idea of non-alignment deep. True, the movement has lost its raison d’être, the confrontation between the Communists and the democratic bloc. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990, the Communists lost the Cold War. Still the movement had come to represent an idea that small nations should not fear the big ones because of their size or power. Modi is a product of the capitalist world. He has neither the pull of the Nehru era of socialism, nor that of Mahatma Gandhi’s self-sufficiency. Kuldip Nayar Modi wants the country to develop, whatever be the means and how big the economy may dutva, to the disappointment of the world create a distance between the haves and the have-nots. and to the horror of minorities. Before finishing the article, I must relate What the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has lamented something which disappointed me. I mean without any serious challenge that the Hindu President Pranab Mukherjee’s book. It was inraj has returned to India after 800 years is discreet on his part to release a book on the bound to question our secular credentials. I Emergency period. He knows that the office am not surprised that the BJP has enrolled he occupies should not be exposed to politifour lakh members in Delhi itself. The Con- cal criticism. Still, the President has taken adgress which can stall the tide is too embroiled vantage of his position to have the spotlight in dynastic politics. But in the past, the party’s on the book to justify what he did during the ideology of egalitarianism and pluralism was Emergency. President Mukherjee was an integral part of very much in the forefront, whether Jawaharlal Nehru groomed Indira Gandhi and she, in the dictatorial rule at that time. He was the turn, Rajiv Gandhi. But today even Congress right hand man of Sanjay Gandhi, an extrapresident Sonia Gandhi is seen as the right of constitutional authority, who almost took the country to dictatorship. That Mukherjee, supthe centre, not even the centre. India’s politics has too engrossed in per- posed to be liberal, went along will always be sonalities. Today, it is Narendra Modi but not questioned, whatever chest-beating he may what he stands for. Development is too vague do at this time.

I

Alone, yet not alone!

F you think nobody loves you, know for sure that you are loved. The earth loves you; that’s why it is holding you upright. The love of the earth is its gravitational force. The air loves you; that’s why it moves through your lungs even when you are sleeping. The Divine loves you very dearly, deeply. Once you realise this, you will never feel lonely. Someone's company cannot fill your loneliness. Even if it does, it is very short-lived. You can still feel lonely in spite of being in company. In the real sense, loneliness can only be filled by being alone. If you could be comfortable being alone for some time, then you will not feel lonely. When you don't feel lonely, you can spread joy to people around you. People run after parties and celebrations, but for the one who does not run after them, parties and celebrations follow him wherever he or she goes. If you run after parties, loneliness comes to you and if you are in the solitude of the Self, parties surround you. If you enjoy being with your Self, you will not be a boring personality. If you are lonely, then you can be boring to others. And that will

BETWEEN THE LINES

make you lonelier! And if your own company bores you, how much more boring must you be to someone else? Those who are always in some company look for the comforts of solitude and those who are in solitude feel lonely and want to be in company. Everyone is looking for a perfect

MATTER & SPIRIT balance. That perfect balance is like a razor’s edge and can only be found in the Self. From time to time, keep a little distance from whomsoever close to you and take some time off for your own space. From the moment you wake up in the morning, you are always with people and your mind is caught up in worldly thoughts. So sometime during the day, sit for a few minutes and get into the cave of your heart. Then you will not feel lonely

even when you are alone. Live your life well. If you are useful to people all your life, there will be hundreds and millions of people to take care of you. Mother Teresa and Acharya Vinoba Bhave, for example, were sick in bed for a long time. Do you think there was nobody to give them company? There were hundreds waiting to take care of them and all they did was to be useful to people around them. When you make service your sole purpose in life, it eliminates fear, brings focus in your mind, purposefulness in action, and longterm joy. Every time you are unhappy, miserable or lonely, you are just coming in touch with your own boundaries. Boundary is the real cause of your disturbance as it brings limitation. You are peaceful and happy till you come in contact with your boundaries. The moment you come in contact with it, then the mind goes on a trip and you move out of your centre. At that moment you can just be grateful and pray for peace. That very moment, you will start smiling and however hopeless the situation is, you will walk through it. — Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

WITH the advent of terror, our paradise like world has turned into a living hell. Clerics and religious scholars should enlighten today's youth who are brainwashed by terror outfits in wrongly believing that suicide bombings lead to martyrdom and is a key to paradise. How can hurting fellow human beings ever bring good to anyone and every faith teaches us to love and respect each other. In the wake of the terror activities spreading mayhem at the moment in different parts of the globe, it would be prudent for the Maharashtra government to beef up security in Mumbai – the economic capital of the country and keep a watchful eye on any suspicious events taking place in the city.

Why can’t India?

Outdated govt policies

GROW UP: Cricket betting is illegal in India in contrast with many other countries of the world where it is legal and such governments earn quite some revenue by taxing the income arising out of betting.

TERROR ALERT: After the attack on an army school in Peshwara, Pakistan, that killed many students, a terror alert has been sounded across India.

WHY can’t India destroy all the Pakistan-sponsored anti-India terrorists’ hideouts, training camps, their arms and ammunition in Pakistan and also in PoK, if Pakistan can destroy the Taliban? India does not want even a single inch of the Pakistani soil. Pakistan will never punish Hafiz Saeed, Lakhvi or Dawood Ibrahim or any other antiIndia terrorist any time even in the coming years. Besides, the solely business-minded US will also never support India in this matter, but will keep on giving financial aid, though it is very well aware of the fact that Pakistan itself is the natural mother of the global terrorism since the past more than four decades. Actually, Australia, UK and all the countries of EU must force the US to do everything against such terrorism sponsoring Pakistan on a war footing. Otherwise all these countries will also never be free from the so-called ‘Islamic’ terrorism. In fact, the Holy Islam means surrender to the Almighty, peace and harmony, and not killing the innocent human beings anywhere in the Allah’s world.

politicians are also involved in it. In most other democracies, betting is legal; and governments earn a considerable revenue by taxing it highly. In India too, taxing betting would go a long way towards reducing the fiscal deficit. FOUNDER of Lashkar-e-Taiba and mastermind of Mumbai attacks of 2008, Hafiz Saeed has promised to carry out terror attacks in India as a revenge for Peshawar killings by Taliban (which has admitted to the killings) but the blame has been passed on to us which was expected. Militant group LeT is a banned group on paper but it is common knowledge that it has the army support in Pakistan and actually even funded by them. Innocent lives were lost in the Mumbai attacks and India should not take such threats lightly and lying down. None of the politicians in Pakistan condemned Saeed's illogical and derogatory statements which means he enjoys the support of the Pakistani establishment as they too are happy and part of any attacks on our shores. Most dreaded criminals and 'wanted' men in India including Dawood reside there and the authorities there cannot deny this fact which the entire world knows. Perhaps the leniency from our own politicians too was responsible as they don't take up this matter at international forums with the vigour and message that is needed. — S N Kabra, Goregaon

On the one hand they want to eliminate the Taliban terrorist groups who butchered 132 school children in Peshawar and on the other hand they are supporting fully the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) chief Hafiz Saeed, the master mind of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacked and who is roaming free in Pakistan and giving threats to India of the attacks during the Republic Day and the visit of American President Barrack Obama at that time. the refrigeration guide If food in your fridge doesn’t stay fresh for as long as it should, the reason could be improper storage techniques. Dev Goswami brings you a simple guide to help you understand what shelves to use for different food items The freezer

Apart from the obvious ice trays and ice cream, your freezer can also be used to store leftover or pre-cooked food (such as rotis) that you won’t be consuming immediately. Also, items such as raw meat, ready-to-eat meals and frozen vegetables that you need to store for over two days should be stored here. If you have leftover raw meat that has already been defrosted, marinate it, pack it in a container, wrap it with cling wrap and then place it in the freezer.

The Top shelves

Compared to all the other shelves in your fridge, the first two (apart from the chiller tray) are the warmest. In most fridges, these shelves also provide the most consistent temperature, making them the ideal place to store leftovers and pre-cooked items such as sauces and chutneys. You can also store dairy items such as milk and yoghurt here, but if your fridge has a chiller tray, it’s better to store them there. Remember to store leftover food and cooked meat in air-tight containers to stop them from stinking up your fridge.

The door

This is the warmest section of the fridge because of its constant interaction with room temperature air every time you open the door. So, remember to use the door racks to store items that need to be cool, but do not spoil easily, such as water, juices, condiments and sodas. You can also store eggs in the egg tray that’s usually in-built on the door.

The boTTom shelves

The bottom shelves are the coldest part of a fridge and so, it is ideal to store marinated meats in. However, remember that you can only store meat here if you plan on using it within a day. If you need to store it for longer, you should store it in the freezer instead. The bottom shelves are also a good place to store opened wine bottles.

The drawer

Known as the crisper drawer, this does exactly what the name suggests — it keeps food crispy. So, store fresh vegetables and fruits in it. It is always a better idea to invest in a fridge that has two drawers, as it will help you separate ethylene-producing foods such as apples, guavas and peaches from other vegetables and fruits. This is important because ethylene gas can spoil items such as lettuce, spinach, carrots and cabbage. But, if you don’t have separate drawers, try to store them in a way that they don’t touch each other.

« Know More the benefits of indulging in holiday treats Since we’re smack in the middle of the festive season, we’re sure that you’re indulging in treats a little more than usual. But, don’t feel guilty! Yamini Walia tells you how this can be good for you

I

t’s almost Christmas! And you need nerves of steel to resist eating all the gingerbread cookies, plum cakes and other delectable Christmas treats. While a little indulgence is okay, you shouldn’t think it’s okay to finish an entire pie in a flash, because no postfestive diet will shed the weight gain caused by a massive binge. However, if you do go slightly overboard, feeling guilty is not going to help, especially if you’re trying to maintain your weight. Charlotte Markey, a psychology professor at Rutgers University, explained, “We don’t want people to feel guilty about enjoying themselves, because that’s counter-productive. Guilt and negative feelings about food are not going to lead to healthy weight management.” Research shows that people don’t gain as much weight during holiday season as you would think. A study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that most people gained less

than a kilo during the period between Thanksgiving and early January. Another study, conducted by a Texas Tech University professor in 2009, found that the average weight gain over the holidays was only around 1kg per person. But, have a realistic plan of action to deal with the temptation of holiday treats. Charlotte explains that instead of vowing to skip a particular food group, or sticking to just appetisers or dessert, people should stop at just one or two pieces of a particular treat. Also, exercise always helps! So, increase your activity level; even 10 to 15 minutes of extra exercise every day will help. But, don’t deprive yourself or rely on quick-fixes as these further trigger overeating. So, if you tell yourself that you’re not going to have dessert at all, you’re more likely to take two helpings. Instead, make your peace with the fact that since it’s Christmas, you’re probably going to eat a little more, and try not to lose your sleep over it.

>> This Christmas, you can eat your favourite cookies in moderation for long term weight benefits

Keep your feet

Baby steps Taking long strides or walking too fast puts a lot of weight on your feet, making them ache faster, especially when you are wearing heels. So, take small steps and don’t scurry about when you’re wearing high heels.

comfortable for a party

7

If you love wearing high-heeled shoes, but even the thought of wearing them to a party makes your feet ache, Shirley Mistry tells you how you can prep your feet for a party and keep them comfortable while you’re at one

8

2

Do the deodorant This trick is a simple one. Spray your feet with deodorant before you put on your shoes. This will help reduce the friction between the shoe and your skin and will prevent painful blisters and cuts.

Pads & plasters Gel cushions/ pads and suede plasters are your best friends while it comes to keeping your feet comfy when you’re at a party. Wear your shoes at home the night before to see where they bite and line them with soothing gel cushions or suede plasters to minimise the pain and prevent blisters.

1

Stretch it out Wearing heels all night long can be as strenuous as an intense workout and like all good exercise routines, it helps to start with a warm up. Stretch out your legs and rotate your ankles for a few minutes before you slip into your heels and you won’t be in agonising pain after wearing them for too long. You can also do these exercises if you’re seated at a dinner party.

Break it up When you’re at a party where everyone is standing and mingling, don’t hesitate to take frequent breaks to sit down and stretch your feet. It takes the pressure off your heels and the balls of your feet, and will help you stay comfortable in your shoes for longer.

6

Plan B Carry an extra pair of flats shoes in your car to quickly change into if the pain becomes unbearable. After all, you need to be comfortable as you go about mingling with other guests.

3

Stand tall Since your ankles and feet aren’t at a 90° angle, they tend to hurt and feel sore more often. So, instead of stumbling around in your heels, ensure that your head, back and spine are in a straight line and that you are using your hips to move your legs as you walk. This will help you maintain better posture.

should you take leave? You think that you might be coming down with something, but you aren’t sure if you should take the day off. Yamini Walia suggests you take this quiz to find out

2. Low energy levels are preventing you from finishing your work for the day and you don’t think you’re going to be able move another inch from where you’re sitting. a. True. b. False. 3. While you feel fine when you’re outdoors or sitting near a window, you start sneezing

Ease into it Don’t wear brand new shoes to a party, as they are bound to give you shoe bites. Instead, break into them the night before by wearing them around your house, using a blow dryer on its highest setting to loosen tight spots and adding gel cushions as you go along. This will prevent discomfort on the day of the event.

4

« quick quiz to know yourself

1. Even the slightest change of weather gives you a cold or the flu. a. True. b. False.

Tacky tape This is a tip that models swear by and is worth giving a shot if you really can’t give up on wearing high-heeled footwear. Tape your third and fourth toe together. This helps keeps you steady, while keeping your foot muscles aligned, preventing foot aches.

incessantly as soon as you enter an airconditioned room. a. True. b. False 4. Your eyelids are red, and feel sticky and matted. a. True. b. False. 5. You’re plagued by an agonising back ache, but your job requires you to sit at your desk for long hours. a. True. b. False.

Mostly As Don’t think twice before calling in sick. Most companies prioritise the welfare of their employees above work, because aggravating the illness could leave you sick for longer, affecting long term productivity. So, severe back pain, pink eye, a chronic cough and cold are all valid reasons to stay home. This is not just for your own wellbeing — you don’t want to pass your illness on to your colleagues! It’s okay to take a break when you’re feeling fatigued, but make sure that it’s when your absence is not going to affect the work as much. Taking the day off to ‘rest’ at the cost of the company is not a good idea. Mostly Bs There’s no reason for you to call in sick. We see no chance of you putting yourself or your colleagues at risk and so, it’s probably a good idea for you to stop thinking about how you can avoid work and start getting ready to head to work!

10

9

Rough it up This tip is especially good for a pair of new shoes. Roughening up the soles with a piece of sandpaper will ensure that your feet get good grip while walking and that you aren’t putting too much pressure on your ankles or the balls of your feet in a desperate attempt to avoid falling or slipping.

>> If you can’t stop sneezing, you should call in sick to work

Good habits Gone bad

You’ve been reading up about staying healthy but aren’t sure whether you’ve bought in to health myths. Dev Goswami recommends you take this quiz to find out if you’re doing ‘healthy living’ right 1. Let’s start off with a slightly gross one — do you squat over your toilet seat instead of simply sitting on it, either because you think it will strength your thigh muscles or because you think it’s more hygienic to avoid touching the seat? a. Yes. b. No. 2. Do you make sure that you brush your teeth (with toothpaste, if you can), after every meal? a. Yes. b. No. 3. Do you use your phone to check your social media accounts, play a game or read just before you go to bed, in a bid to relax? a. Yes. b. No. 4. When you’re at a buffet or a party, do you stop yourself from eating desserts to avoid consuming unwanted calories.

a. Yes. b. No. 5. Do you bathe, as well as wash your hands with antibacterial soap to ensure that you are being as hygienic as possible. a. Yes. b. No. 6. You think that having a set bedtime doesn’t matter, as long as you get the required 7-8 hours of sleep. To do so, do you wake up at different times every day, to make up for the hours, according to time you went to bed the night before? a. Yes. b. No. 7. Do you pop a multi-vitamin every day because you aren’t sure whether your diet is providing you with enough nutrients? a. Yes. b. No.

Mostly As You need a reality check — the habits that you’ve been following so diligently, in the belief that they’re healthy, can actually be harming you. While you’re actually trying to be healthy, you’re making harmful mistakes when it comes to applying these practices in your daily life. There is no need to stop what you’ve been doing completely, but do read our box to find out what changes you can make to ensure that your lifestyle is genuinely healthy. Mostly Bs You seem to be well-informed about what is healthy and what isn’t. You don’t buy into every supposedly healthy tip that comes your way. Continue not only with your current lifestyle, but also the healthy skepticism with which you treat health advice. While you don’t really need to, we recommend that you read our box below just in case there is a misconception that you’re harbouring.

« Know more iSlouch

>> Night races are a growing trend across the world. Read our tips to find out how you can prep your body for one

We’ve heard about iPhones and iPads, but what is iSlouch? Sara Shah clears up the confusion

I

f you’re wondering if this is the newest addition to the family of Apple products, you should know right off the bat that it’s not. iSlouch is a term that is used to describe the act of looking down at your smartphone devices for so long that you strain your neck muscles. This leads to severe neck pain, pushes your head forward, and in turn, stresses your spine. If the symptoms of neck and back pain are ignored for too long, the damage can become permanent. >> iSlouch can lead to neck and back pain

It’s a well-known fact that sitting for too long can seriously damage your spine. Bending over your phone for too long can speed up this damage. When your head drops forward, the weight that your neck has to support increases. And as your muscles struggle to support your head, your shoulders round forwards and the outward curve of your back increases. Your core muscles begin to take a beating as your spine resembles a ‘C’ shape. This also affects your posture and leaves you with a permanent, unwanted slouch that you won’t notice until it’s too late. Other symptoms include migraines, neck pain and lower back pain. While we understand that it’s hard to part with your phones, remember that iSlouch can only be identified by the time the symptoms begin to show, which is usually too late. So, the next time you whip out your phone to keep yourself busy or kill time, think of the long-term effects of your bad posture and try to avoid using your phone as much. For times when you have to, ensure that you’re sitting straight and aren’t slouching. Instead of holding your phone in front of your chest, hold it in front of your face so that you aren’t bending down over it.

Swift runner Running competitively can be an arduous activity, and running a night race, though quite exciting, is even more daunting. Shirley Mistry brings you a host of tips to ensure that you can give a night race your best shot

BEFORE THE RACE Switch to the night This point is especially relevant if you’re used to getting your workout out of the way first thing in the morning. If you are planning on running a night race, start working out in the evening. As you get closer to race day, do a few trial runs at night to see how your body fares and how you react to different foods and fluids at night.

Phase it in If you’ve been following the ‘early to bed, early to rise’ philosophy, now is a good time to switch up your habits. Spending your evenings unwinding and retiring to bed early will mean that your body won’t be motivated enough to run a race. So, make sure that you’re active (do chores or a quick workout) in the evening as well, just to get your body accustomed to being active. Relax an hour before you go to bed.

Be prepared Don’t get so caught up in your training that you forget to get your equipment in place, and are left scrambling for things as you dash out of the door. Pack your clothes, shoes and gear bag and remember to charge your music player the night before. Drive to the starting point well in advance so that

In fact, taking a 20-30 minute power nap during the day will actually help you power up for the night race.

Put your feet up Literally! If you walk a lot or spend a lot of time on your feet throughout the day, you will start feeling exhausted just a few minutes into the race. So, take it easy and keep your feet off the ground on the day of your race.

Warm up Before you get too comfortable after reading our previous tip, remember that if you suddenly break into a run, you won’t be able to reach your goal pace and your body won’t be able to sustain itself throughout a long race. So, stretch for about 15-20 minutes and jog for 10-20 minutes before the race starts to prep your muscles for the daunting task ahead.

Food wise

you can figure out your parking arrangements. We also recommend driving along the course of the race a day earlier in order to map restrooms and pit stops.

Our biggest tip would be for you to tank up on fluids. You don’t want to lose out on a prize spot in the race because you are dehydrated. So, drink lots of fluids and eat complex carbohydrates and proteins to provide your body enough nutrients to produce energy. But, remember to stay away from fried, oil, spicy and sugary food to avoid falling sick or feeling sluggish.

Nothing new

DURING THE RACE

When the race is just a week away, stick to what you know. Don’t try new foods, energy drinks or wear new shoes or other gear in the days approaching a night race. Your body may not react well to it, especially if it involves a binging on a new cuisine or running in a new pair of shoes.

Outfit woes You may want to look good while running the race, but it is in your best interest to wear an outfit that you usually exercise in and are comfortable wearing. If you want to purchase a new outfit, make sure that you wear it a few times before the race to avoid being distracted or chaffed by what you are wearing on race day.

DAY OF THE RACE Take it easy If you think that it makes more sense to finish all your chores for the week before you run a race, simply so that you can relax afterwards, stop right now! You need all your energy, so take it easy on the day of the race.

Pace matters You may be raring to go, but make sure to pace yourself so that you don’t give the race your all in the first few minutes and burn out too fast. In fact, seasoned runners suggest that you start off 10% slower than your ideal pace and then pick up speed slowly to ensure that you last longer and don’t fizzle out half way through.

Drink fluids We don’t need to tell you again how important it is to hydrate yourself, so ensure that you drink around 120ml of fluid every 15-20 minutes during the race.

Assess yourself It might be slightly nerve wrecking to be surrounding by hordes of experienced runners, but keep yourself motivated. Give yourself a pep talk, or count down the minutes to the next stop, which will keep you focussed. If you feel very tired, don’t hesitate from slowing down for a bit. After all, you don’t want to end up injured.

will. You. sHut. up!

>> If you find sounds of chewing and typing irritating, you may be suffering from misophonia

Is that how you react when someone simply chews loudly next to you? If so, Dev Goswami recommends you ask your doctor about a condition called misophonia. Read on as he tells you more about this rarely diagnosed disorder

T

hink of a blackboard. Now, think of someone scraping the blackboard with their nails to produce a screeching sound. That shudder that just passed through your body? Multiply that by 100 and add some rage to the mix. If you feel like punching someone who is chewing noisily, or need to plug in your earphones or step into another room when someone is typing or swallowing too loudly, you may be suffering from misophonia. This disorder is an intense dislike for sounds, often veering towards uncontrollable hatred. All sounds won’t affect you, but if someone is constantly sniffling, clearing their throat, typing too loudly or chewing like a cow, you’re likely to be on the verge of tears, or close to screaming at them.

Misophonia in real life “This is about a student, who used to get irritated while the teacher wrote with chalk on the board. He was a good student, but was very irritated by that particular noise. He once walked out of the class, while she was taking a lecture. So, the principal called his mother and she brought him to me. After talking to this 13-year-old, I found out about the various sound triggers that irritated him. Regular counselling sessions, with cognitive behaviour therapy did help him to an extent, but he is still not completely cured of this condition.” — Manali Bartia, psychologist

WhaT is Misophonia?

Why does iT happen?

Manali Bartia, a psychologist, explains, “Misophonia is a hypersensitivity to soft sounds or normal background noise, which does not affect most people.” A normal person is likely to get irritated or distracted if someone around him chews loudly or if there is a loud clatter of keyboards. However, someone suffering from misophonia is likely to experience extreme, negative emotions such as anger and may even go so far as to physically harm the person who is producing the sound. In some cases, instead of the outward emotions (which correspond to the ‘fight’ in a fight-or-flight reaction), the patient suffers from emotions of ‘flight’ which include panicking, being on the verge of tears and wanting to run away from the source of the sound.

Unfortunately, there is not much information available to explain what causes misophonia just yet. It’s a relatively new condition (the term itself was coined in 2000), but a small study conducted at the University of California helps shed some light on the causes for this disorder. Conducted using a control group comprising of a small number of misophonics, the PhD student conducting the study, concluded that misophonia can be linked to a disruption in the passage of the sound signals in your brain. According to the conclusions of the study, there’s a possibility with misophonia, that the nervous signals for sounds take a direct route from your thalamus (which directs nervous signals from your body’s organs to their intended recipients) to the amygdyla (which converts nervous

>> Hookah smoke contains a toxic chemical called benzene

signals into an appropriate emotion), without passing through the prefrontal cortex, as it normally should (see our box for a detailed explanation).

hoW is iT TreaTed? Since there is no definite cause for misophonia, a cure is yet to be discovered. Manali explains, “There are currently no researched cures available for misophonia. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Neurofeedback (NFB), Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) and psycho-therapeutic hypnotherapy are some of the possible therapies that can be tried. However, their use varies from case to case. Overall, maintaining a healthy and a balanced diet, along with exercise, helps reduce stress levels, which is often considered as a trigger for misophonia.” This, combined with the fact that not many people are aware about this condition, means that the condition is not often diagnosed to begin with. Manali tells us that though she suspects that there are several cases in India, as a psychologist, she has only come across only a few . She further adds, “In western countries, a lot of research has been carried out and data has been published. There are established hearing centres and evaluation centres, but India is still lagging behind. More awareness about this condition has to be created among people.” What she says next is, we believe, the perfect way to end this article — “It is a minor condition that can have a very long lasting impact.”

The fine prinT The cortex is a highly evolved part of your brain, which allows for better interpretation of a situation and in turn, a more measured response. However, nervous signals bypass the cortex in certain situations, even in healthy individuals, as this allows your brain to react faster to stimuli and quickly activate the fight-or-flight response. But, this means that you won’t really know what’s happening around you, because your cortex was unable to analyse the stimuli. This is useful in emergencies, for example, when you hear a blast and when your brain’s priority is to keep yourself safe and not to find out about the what, why or how the blast occurred. But, when each and every sound signal starts avoiding the cortex (which is what the study hypothesised happens with misophonia), everyday sounds, such as those of someone chewing, essentially see your brain reacting as if your life was in danger. Yes, even we are marvelling at our brain’s many quirks.

« Know more HooKaH smoKers migHt be inHaling benzene

Are you an ardent hookah smoker, or are you always in a room full of the smoke? If so, you might be inhaling a toxic chemical found in gasoline called benzene, says Yamini Walia

T

he trend of hookah parlours has been forced to draw back, and more or less die in the city. And for good reason! Those who think inhaling the fumes from a hookah is less harmful than smoking, this article will be a bit of an eye opener. Hookahs contain benzene, which is a substance that is known to put you at risk of leukaemia. A new report indicates that simply being present in a room where hookah is being inhaled can lead you to inhale high levels of benzene. Nada Kassem, the associate director at the Center for Behavioural Epidemiology and Community Health at San Diego State University, tells us, “Hookah smoking is hazardous to the health of those who smoke it, and those who socialise or live with them.”

Nada, who conducted the study along with his colleagues, had 105 hookah smokers and 103 non-smokers spend an average of three hours at either a hookah lounge or at a house party where hookah was being smoked. The benzene uptake quadrupled after hookah smokers inhaled hookah tobacco in hookah lounges, and doubled after they smoked hookah tobacco in private spaces. For the non-smokers, the intake of benzene did not change after events in private spaces, but increased 2.6 times after attending a social event at a hookah lounge. Thomas Eisenberg, a researcher with Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, explained, “This important study adds to the growing phenomena that water pipe tobacco smoking

exposes user to the same smoke toxicants, to which cigarette smokers are exposed.” Thomas wasn’t involved in the study, but studies water pipe smoking extensively. He adds, “Both, the laboratory and the naturalistic studies are consistent with one another and indicate that water pipe tobacco smoke contains many toxicants, including nicotine that causes dependence, tobacco-specific nitrosamines that cause cancer, carbon monoxide that causes cardiovascular diseases, and now benzene that causes leukaemia. Water pipe tobacco smokers have these same toxicants in their bodies after they smoke tobacco in a water pipe.” So, avoid taking even a few drags the next time you’re around one!

>> Bleaching your hair can change your look, but it can also damage your hair

BarBara, our Beauty expert, will help fix your proBlems

Dear Barbara, I love frequently changing my nail polish, but recently, as the weather has gotten chillier, my cuticles have become ragged and hurt a lot. Not only do they look unsightly, the condition is aggravating as well. How do I get rid of them? — maya Kothari, Bhiwandi Dear maya, Dry, ragged cuticles are a result of a drastic drop in temperature. What you can do, is take a pair of sharp cosmetic scissors and trim them, so that they don’t rub against surfaces and become worse. Next, apply almond or olive oil on them every night and wear a pair of gloves overnight. Use a mild scrub to get rid of the dead skin the next morning and follow it up with a moisturiser. You can also take precautionary measures such as wearing gloves while you do the dishes to ensure that the skin around your nails doesn’t get dry and flaky.

All bleAched up You might want to change your hair colour to spruce up your look, but Sara Shah suggests that you keep the effects of hair bleaching in mind before taking the plunge

G

reen, blue, silver, grey or pink — when it comes to colouring your hair, the options are endless. But, did you know that bleaching, an essential step in the hair colouring process, (especially if you are picking a colour that is lighter than your natural hair), can seriously damage your hair? The effects of bleaching show up almost immediately, leaving behind a yellow or white appearance. Read on to find out exactly what you’re getting into the next time you decide to go crazy with hair colour.

how BleaChiNG worKs >> Trim your cuticles with a trimmer to make them less painful Dear Barbara, I have pigmented skin and no amount of concealer helps cover the dark patches completely. In fact, the more concealer I apply, the greyer the area looks. I have to attend a Christmas party soon and I really want to flaunt a flawless complexion. Help! — sumita shetty, Byculla Dear sumita, A concealer, when applied by itself, can only cover up the pigmentation and spots to a certain extent. If you suffer from severe dark patches, we recommend investing in a good colour corrector. This product contains pigments that counter the purple/ blue undertones of your dark patches, making your skin look more even. You can then apply a concealer over it for even better coverage.

Bleaching is an important step of the hair colouring process. Dr. Snehal Sriram, medical director and consultant dermatologist at Trica Hair Clinic tells us, “Hair is made up of several layers of a protein known as keratin. To infuse colour into your hair, first, bleach is used to strip your hair of its natural, dark colour. To do so, the bleach creates holes in the structure of your hair, which can damage it, as well as its cuticles.” This leads to dry, damaged hair that can only be fixed — albeit, temporarily — by conditioning your hair after the treatment.

CouNteriNG the DamaGe Bleaching agents penetrate your hair shaft by softening and lifting the cuticles in order to drive out its natural colour. The chemicals that are present in these agents damage your

hair follicles and strip it off its natural moisture. This leaves behind dry, brittle and rough hair that is prone to breakage and hair fall. However, there are temporary fixes for such problems. Dr.

Snehal explains, “Hair professionals condition your hair after the treatment to moisturise it. But, this only works temporarily. Conditioners form a protective layer over your hair, which is wiped off the next time you wash it. So, even conditioning your hair cannot undo the extensive damage that is caused by bleaching.” If you still want to colour your hair, Dr. Snehal suggests consulting a dermatologist to find out whether it is healthy and strong enough to withstand extensive damage that will be caused by bleaching first.

loNG term solutioNs Even though the adverse effects of bleaching can last for a long time, it is possible to undo the damage over time. Nourishing your hair is the key and Dr. Snehal recommends that you avoid getting any other hair treatments. She adds, “People often notice the damage that has been caused by bleaching and opt for further treatments such as rebonding and chemical-based softening to cover it up. However, the damage caused by these additional treatments is immeasurable.” So, your best bet is to visit a dermatologist who will be able to tell you about a few safe treatments that can help to undo this damage. Dr. Snehal also suggests that you maintain a healthy diet and frequently oil and condition your hair. Remember to avoid using heatbased styling tools and give your hair the time to recover on its own.

Concern over 41 Indian hostages in Iraq

A high-level parliamentary committee has expressed concern over the "plight of 41 Indian nationals" held hostage in strife-torn Iraq and wondered whether widespread and repeated hostage taking indicates "failure of government's policy" to deal with various actors in the region. The Standing Committee on External Affairs recommended that MEA "must strategically and diplomatically" engage with the international community and major actors in the region to ensure their safe release. The 41 Indians were working on construction projects near the Iraqi city of Mosul when they were taken into captivity by ISIS in June.

The first protest by TMC MPs, with whom the government has had an uneasy relationship over the Saradha scam, targeted Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for calling Opposition parties, as obstructionist. Responding to Jaitley's criticism that the Opposition was not allowing Rajya Sabha to function, TMC MP Saugata Roy said, "He (Jaitley) blamed the Opposition parties and the TMC for not being able to implement the so-called reform agenda. Govt can’t tinker with right to freedom of religion: Cong N EW DELHI: Rejecting government's proposal for a law against conversion, Congress on Monday said freedom to religion is an 'essential fabric and character' of the Constitution which cannot be tinkered with. Congress alleged that controversial conversion programmes are being organised by groups affiliated to Sangh parivar and demands raised by them for an anti-conversion law were aimed at creating "fear psychosis" among minorities and depicting them as "lesser citizens". "It is a belief of the Congress that Constitution adequately addresses the right of freedom to religion. No

amendment or tempering with existing provisions is required to deal with it... For heaven's sake, don't alter founding principles," party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala told PTI. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, BJP President Amit Shah and the BJPled government have pitched for a law as opposition parties have sought to corner the Narendra Modi government over controversial 'ghar-wapsi' events. Hindu bodies claim they are re-converting those who were converted from Hinduism by Christian and Muslim groups. Surjewala, however, sidestepped questions about anti-conversion

laws brought in by Congress governments in different states in the past, insisting that existing constitutional safeguards could deal with the issue. Taking a dig at Sangh and BJP leaders, including Modi and Shah, he said they should at least listen to their own colleague and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj who in a recent event had reportedly said that India's genius lay in its ability to absorb and encompass many cultures with whom it has come in contact. "At the same time it allowed different cultures to flourish as distinct entities based on the principle of unity in diversity," she had said. Surjewala added that the entire controversy was a "diversionary" tactic employed by the government and its affiliates to take people's attention away from the Centre's failure in bringing back black money, creating new jobs and bringing any investment despite Modi's "gimmickry".

Voting by NRIs without coming to India

Ahead of Pravasi Bhartiya Divas next month, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Monday voiced confidence about finding a solution to voting by NRIs without coming to India. The Election Commission was considering the issue, she said. "The Election Commission could not take a decision so far. There are two-three suggestions. I think a solution will be found out soon to address the difficulty of coming here and vote," Swaraj said.

A group of Samajwadi Party and JD(U) MPs also protested against the government raising slogans "kala dhan wapas lao" (bring back the blackmoney), "Gandhi hum sharminda hain, tere katil zinda hain" (Gandhi, we are ashamed as your killers are still alive), "vadakhilafi band karo" (do not renege on your promises). "The government has failed on every front and has gone back on their promises. Where is the blackmoney which was promised by the BJP during the election? He had said blackmoney will be brought back and Rs 15 lakh would be transferred to every account. That is not happening. "We want farmers to get 1.5 times more money than the cost of production," Rajya Sabha MP Ram Gopal Yadav told reporters outside Parliament. Asked whether Samajwadi Party would join hands with other Janta Parivar parties in staging more such protests, to which Yadav responded in the affirmative.

Make in India, Clean Ganga initiatives at PBD N

EW DELHI: NDA government will showcase its new initiatives like Make in India, Clean Ganga and economic reforms at the Pravasi Bhartiya Divas (PBD), India's annual event to connect with diaspora to be held next month in Gandhinagar, to woo investors and strengthen the two-way engagement. The 13th edition of the three-day annual event beginning January 7 has a special significance this year as it will also commemorate the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi's return from South Africa, reports PTI. PM Narendra Modi will address the conclave on January 8 while President Pranab Mukherjee will confer Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards to distinguished overseas Indians on January 9. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said around 3,000 delegates from the diaspora community from across the world are likely to participate in the event being organised by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs along with Gujarat govt. Swaraj said President of the Republic of Guyana Donald Ramotar will be Chief Guest of the event to which Foreign Minister of South Africa has also been invited because of commemoration of Gandhi's return from that country. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and a number of Union Ministers will participate in plenary sessions which will have themes such as 'Opportunities in India', Smart Cities and Urban Planning, Skill Development and Tourism etc. Chief Ministers of Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Nagaland have confirmed their participation along with those ruled by BJP or its allies include Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana and Maharashtra.

Women are increasingly empowered financially and they are driving the explosive growth of e-commerce in Asia says a survey conducted by the prestigious Economist magazine’s Intelligence Unit By A Business reporter

A

detailed survey of 5,500 women across Asia’s major urban areas conducted by The Economist Intelligence Unit finds that they are increasingly empowered financially and that they are driving the explosive growth of e-commerce in the region. The survey results are published in a report entitled ‘On the rise and online: Female consumers in Asia’. The report was commissioned by VIPSHOP. Across the eight markets covered, 41% of the women surveyed say they are joint breadwinners in their household and another 8% say they are sole breadwinners. The trend is

particularly pronounced in mainland China, where 62% of women describe themselves as joint breadwinners. Women are also showing increasing independence in handling finances—just over two-thirds report having their own bank accounts (76% in mainland China) and 48% hold their own credit cards. Nearly half of women polled (49%) say they prefer shopping online to doing so in stores. The figure is as high as 69% in mainland China. There are several reasons why women prefer online shopping. Most women point to cost savings (62%) and time savings (60%), but they also feel that online retailers can be relied upon to have the products they want to buy in stock (59%) and that online shopping offers a broader range of choices (56%). Nearly half of women (48%) say they feel pressured and stressed in traditional shops (more than 50% of women in Macau, South Korea, India and mainland China feel this way), and 27% feel store staff talk down to them because they are women (a sentiment that is most pronounced in Macau, India and mainland China).

Nearly 90% of the women surveyed buy some clothing and accessories online (39% buy the majority of their clothing this way) and 83% buy some cosmetics (29% buy the majority of their cosmetics online). Many of the trends uncovered in the research are driven by the younger generation, suggesting that the move toward online shopping in general, the shift to shopping on mobile devices, and a preference for being addressed on a personal level by marketers are likely to intensify. RBI Modifies Definition Of Non-Cooperative Borrower By A Business Reporter

T

hose having ability to pay but still defaulting and thwarting lenders efforts for recovery of their dues by hiding information would be classified as non-cooperative borrowers, RBI said yesterday. Modifying the definition of a non-cooperative borrower, Reserve Bank said,:"In effect, a non-cooperative borrower is a defaulter who deliberately stone walls legitimate efforts of the lenders to recover their dues." It will also include those not engaging constructively with lender, do not provide necessary information sought, deny access to assets financed/collateral securities and obstruct sale of securities. Borrowers with aggregate fund-based and non-fund based loans (like bank guarantee and letter of credit) of Rs 5 crore can be classified as non-cooperative in such instances, RBI said in a release. For business enterprises (other than companies), noncooperative borrowers would include persons in charge and responsible for management of the business.

FESTIVAL OF SUPPLE VOICES

25

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, DECEMBER 23, 2014 By Amarendra Dhaneshwar

T

he late Sharadchandra Arolkar was a doyen of the Gwalior gharana. Perhaps the most sophisticated interpreter of the Gwalior khyal tradition which he absorbed from gurus like Krishnarao Pandit, Eknath Pandit and Krishnarao Muley Arolkar went on to explore the niceties of the khyal form and could visualise its original beauty as it evolved in the late 19th century. The annual festival of music hosted in his memory by the 'Khayal Trust' and 'Kalabharati', the cultural wing of the Karnataka Sangha, is a platform for talented artistes from all over the country. This year the festival was supported by 'Bank of India' and 'Union Bank of India'. Shashwati Mandal who belongs to a branch of the Gwalior gharana sang a reposeful raga 'Marwa' to flag off the festival. The consonance between the notes D and r was well brought out.

Shashwati sings in a voice which is extremely supple, though shallow. Her taan patterns were delivered with a sense of precision. Rajendra Varman, the elder musician of the lot, played a superb raga 'Chhayanat'. This is one of

the most difficult ragas to attempt on the sitar. The sitarist who achieved this feat and rose to all India fame way back in 1952 was Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan. Varman is his pupil and played the raga in a style reminiscent of the maestro.

Pranabkumar Biswas, a product of the Sangeet Research Academy of Calcutta, is a pupil of Nisar Husain Khan, Rashid Khan and Rajan Mishra. His 'Todi' was sung with a lot of emotion in his voice. The drut cheex 'Aab Mori Naiya Par Karo' was full of devotional fervour. Himanshu Nanda, a senior pupil of Hariprasad Chaurasia played the raga 'Shudhsarang'. He displayed a keen aesthetic sense as he unfolded the raga.He also played his own creation 'Harikrupa' which was an interesting combination of notes. Abhay Datar, Prafulla Athalye, Aditya Narayan Bannerjee and Anutosh Degharia on the tabla and Niranjan Lele and Anant Joshi on the harmonium gave superb support to the musicians.

RIP Zarin Daroowala Sharma Playing the game of marriage By Amarendra Dhaneshwar

Z

arin Daroowala Sharma, one of the front-ranking instrumentalists of the country, breathed her last two days ago. Sharma was away from the concert scene for the last three to four months but the world of music was not aware of her ailments. She quietly passed into history, but has left an indelible mark on the hearts of the music lovers with lots of recordings, performances and melodic pieces played for countless quality film songs. Zarin Daroowala was a child prodigy who grew up in the Dadar Parsi Colony. Unlike most Parsis who are sold on the Western music, Zarin most unexpectedly took to Hindustani music at an early age. She came into the limelight as a child artiste playing the harmonium. She would give solo harmonium recitals. She performed at prestigious music festivals like Sur Singar Sansad's 'Haridas Sammelan'. When she first heard Ali Akbar Khan playing the sarod she decided to switch over to the sarod. She was trained by Haripada Ghosh in the beginning. Later on she learned from musicians like Vishnu Govind Jog, Shrikrishna Ratanjankar and S C R Bhatt. The only other leading sarod player was Sharanrani Bakliwal from Delhi. She played classical concerts and also played for soundtracks and background music of films. Her pieces for songs like 'Alla Tero Naam', 'Aap Yuhi Agar Humse Milte Rahe' or 'Jab Deep Jale Aana' were excellent melodic interventions. Zarin went on to win many awards. Her husband Ashok Sharma is the son of the famous Bhagatram of the Husnalal Bhagatram duo. Her disciples include noted santoor maestro Ulhas Bapat. Zarin and her vibrant sarod strokes will be sorely missed by music lovers.

mruta Productions, director Kumar Sohani and writer Dr Anand Nadkarni’s new play ‘Tya Tighanchi Gosht’ delves into the married lives of today and comes up with a shocking picture of broken marriages. Suman (Ashwini Ekbote) has been living apart from her husband (Sharad Ponkshe) for more than 14 years and is a single parent to her daughter (Nyanada Panse). But suddenly one fine day her husband enters their lives again, since they are not divorced. The husband tries to make overtures to Suman’s daughter, to claim her affection as a father, which makes Suman very angry. She vents her anger on her husband and asks him to get out of her life and that her daughter is only hers since she has raised her

alone from her childhood. She firmly says to her husband that he has no claims over herself and her daughter. This leads to a conflict and a bone of contention between the mother and the father. The play about this sensitive subject is written well by eminent psychiatrist Dr Anand Nadkarni. Director veteran Kumar Sohani succeeds in drawing good performances from the lead cast, including Sharad Ponkshe, Ashwini Ekbote and Nyanada Panse. Jayant Ghate’s cameo is impressive. Suchet Gawai is a good find. Ashok Patki’s music enhances the play. The lighting by Shraddha Kumar is relevant to the subject of the play. The sets are in keeping with the milieu of the play. Allin-all a good play for the family audiences. Don’t miss it!

Celebrating contemporary and classical forms By Vijay Shanker

IN BRIEF

t was amazing to watch classical and contemporary dancers performing on the same platform at the Celebrate Bandra festival. The varied classical dance style that were presented were Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Mohiniattam and Odissi. In the modern dances, there was this touch of modernity combined with tradition. While the classical danced within the traditional framework, the contemporary dancers moved a step furthe, while revealing varied bodily movements with a acrobatic touch. Curated by renowned Bharatanatyam exponent Guru Lata Surendra, the programme commenced with the accomplished Savithri Sastri's 'Soul Cages', blending well into innovation and classicism, providing insight into the facets of classical dancing like aharya, angika. vachika and satvika aspects. Concept, direction and performance was by

Guru Lata pertaining to the four seasons, portraying summer, rain, winter and spring. Mohiniattam and Bharatanatyam supplemented and complimented both the styles. Lata danced along with Sujata Nair and disciples of Guru Jayashree Nair. The evening gathered momentum with Pratispandam, where a medley of varied classical styles were performed with harmony while maintaining perfect rhythm. The disciples of Geeta Venkateshwar, Jyothi Mohan, Padmini Radhakrishnan, Sushma Gopinath, Rohit Gopinath, Jayashree Nair, Lata Surendra and Chhaya Khanvate performed. The evening concluded with a pulsating performance by Ashley Lobo team. Lata Surendra says "My aim as the curator and vice president of the executive committee of the World Dance Council UNESCO has always been the celebration of the concept 'One World, One Dance',providing a holistic perspective where all dancers dance together." Guru Lata Surendra incidentally has just returned from the World Congress of Dance organised by the UNESCO dance section in Chiba, Japan.

Under the Horizon Series, ICCR, Mumbai is for the first time collaborating with the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) and hosting a special cultural programme on Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore and Victoria Ocampo titled 'Vijaya – The Victorious' to be presented by Kolkata-based cultural organization Shrutibritto on Sunday, December 28, at 6.30 pm, at the small auditorium of NGMA, Mumbai.

Mitchell Johnson bowling during the second Test in Brisbane.

IT’S IMPORTANT TO INTIMIDATE: JOHNSON M SPORTS

ELBOURNE: Never the one to shy away from a showdown, either with the ball or words, Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson feels "psychological warfare" is important to intimidate the opposition on the cricket field. In a new DVD titled 'Mitchell Johnson: Bouncing Back,' the pacer, who has tormented India with both bat and ball in the ongoing Test series in Australia, has spoken about the importance of instilling fear in the rivals. "Sometimes we say stupid things when we're out there. Sometimes we try and say things that hopefully get into the batsmen's heads a little bit. We try to get them to think about their feet, or just let them know you are going to bowl another short ball. It's all mind games," Johnson was quoted as saying in the DVD by 'ESPNCricinfo'. "Sometimes it might look a little different on TV. It might look as if we're going a bit too hard at each other, and sometimes it could be a bit over the top. But we're always trying to stay inside the guidelines," he said. Johnson was involved in an on-field spat with the Indians in the second Test in Brisbane where the visitors' attempts at sledging him backfired badly. The tearaway bowler smashed 88 runs and came back to grab four wickets to help Australia win the match and take a 2-0 lead in the series. Johnson feels aggression channelled well can yield good results. "If you can get into someone's mind by speaking to a batsman and tell them that their feet aren't going anywhere, hopefully they'll start

to think about that. You then bowl a short one at them, and you're in their head. I love that part of the game. I think it's great. And I don't think it's ever going to stop," he said.

He was answering specifically to the point brought up by Dhoni, wherein on Saturday he had commented on the inconsistent umpiring in this ongoing series. The umpiring blunders has triggered a debate on whether the Decision Review System should have been used in the series. "I personally think they've done a pretty good job," Lyon said supporting the umpires, Ian Gould and Marais Erasmus. "It's been quite tough for them, especially in Adelaide. That wicket was a pretty tough wicket. It's going to swing both ways (with such decisions). My dad didn’t believe I was selected: Joe Burns M

ELBOURNE: Young batsman Joe Burns' selection in the Australian cricket team for the third Test against India was so unexpected that his own father had refused to believe the news. The 25-year-old, who was named a shock replacement for injured all-rounder Mitchell Marsh yesterday, spoke of his father's surprise and his own joy at getting a national call-up. "My Dad didn't believe me, so that's a little bit disappointing. I am a massive Australian cricket fan who just happens to play cricket himself," Burns was quoted as saying by 'The Daily Telegraph'.

"I am a cricket nuffy. I follow the game closely and I love it. That makes Boxing Day even more special, knowing how big this day is in the Australian sport calendar. As an Australian cricket fan the Boxing Day Test is always something that comes to your mind, the day after Christmas when you sit on the back deck watching the cricket," he added. Burns has been rewarded for a brilliant run in the Sheffield Shield this year, scoring 439 runs at an average of 55. He has scored 2978 runs at an average of 42.54 at the first-class level. The youngster, who is also pursuing a degree in Econom-

ics, said he is looking forward to train under national coach Darren Lehmann. "I am looking forward to having Boof (Lehmann) as Australian coach as I really enjoyed playing underneath him," Burns said. "It is going to be with great pride that I can say he is my Australian coach." Asked if he would feel any pressure in his debut Test, which starts on Friday, Burns said, "In terms of the pressure I think I will just enjoy the experience and enjoy the moment." "It is something that I've always dreamed of, and now I'm pinching myself thinking it may become a reality."

have any problem with it. But both team have to agree to use it," he replied, when asked about the issues that the Indian players have voiced about DRS in recent days. Australia have quite a few injury worries going into the Boxing Day Test. Peter Siddle and Ryan Harris have been bowling in the nets, while David Warner is expected to overcome his sore thumb and be fit for the match. Mitchell Marsh has already been ruled out and batsman Joe Burns has been drafted into the side in his place. It was in these circumstances that Australia needed to chase 130 runs on a difficult Gabba wicket and they made heavy weather of it, getting stuck at 122/6 at one stage. It puts the onus on both Shane Watson and Brad Haddin to score some runs, the duo having done nothing of note with the bat so far in the series.

Young Axar Patel to replace Jadeja in Test squad Young left-arm spinner Axar Patel will replace an injured Ravindra Jadeja, who was ruled out due to a shoulder injury from India's remaining two cricket Tests against Australia. According to a media release issued by the BCCI, "Axar Patel will join the Indian team in Australia for the remainder of the Test Series as a replacement for Ravindra Jadeja, who has a shoulder injury and will be returning to India to undergo a rehabilitation program." The injury will also raise question marks over whether Jadeja will recover in time for the ODI tri-series in January,

Tendulkar named ambassador for 2015 ICC World Cup

DUBAI: Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar, who is the all-time leading run-getter in World Cup history, was named the event's ambassador for the second successive edition. "The International Cricket Council today announced Sachin Tendulkar as the World Cup 2015 Ambassador. It will be the second successive time that the India maestro will be the Ambassador of ICC's pinnacle tournament, after he fulfilled the role in the previous event in 2011," the ICC said in a statement. In his role as ambassador, Tendulkar will promote and support a variety of ICC initiatives

to enhance the profile of the tournament, which is the third biggest sporting event in the world and will take place in Australia and New Zealand from February 14 to March 29. Tendulkar retired from international cricket last year after representing India in 200 Tests, 463 One-Dayers and one Twenty20 International. In a career spanning 24 years, the 41year-old scored a total of 34,357 international runs and 100 centuries. Tendulkar added the missing World Cup title to his long list of achievements in his sixth attempt in 2011.

Indian Navy, Air India in final M

UMBAI: Indian Navy and Air India recorded contrasting wins to advance into the final round of the sixth RCF Premier Cup Football Tournament– 2014, sponsored by Deserve Group, and played under floodlights at the picturesque RCF Ground, Chembur. The tournament is organised by the RCF Colony Boys Krida & Sanskrutik Mandal under the aegis of the MDFA. In a well-contested semifinal match, Indian Navy produced a late charge scoring in the dying moments to snatch a 2-1 victory. The Naval outfit did well to take the lead through G.P. Priyokumar Sharma against the run of play midway through the first half. But, Central Railway came back and managed to find the equalising goal through Zuber Desai towards the end of the first half.

In the second half, both the teams worked hard and tried their best to create goal-scoring chances. However, with time ticking away, Navy from a late raid towards the Central Railway goal found success when Riyad B. capitalised for a gilt-edged opportunity in scoring a goal, which turned out to be the winning effort. Earlier, In the first semifinal, Air India scored an authoritative 5-0 win against Dena Bank with consummate ease. Air India’s most experienced midfielder Vijith Shetty played the main role by scoring two goals. Shetty’s teammates, Aksar C.V., Onkar Singh and Neil Gaikwad all contributed to the win by scoring a goal each. Results – Indian Navy 2 (Priyokumar, Riyad) beat Central Railway 1 (Zuber Desai). Air India 5 (Vijith Shetty 2, Aksar C.V., Onkar Singh, Neil Gaikwad) beat Dena Bank 0.

ANPUR: After medium pacer Shardul Thakur's inspiring spell of six for 53 helped Mumbai bundle out Uttar Pradesh for a meagre 206, they found themselves in trouble, being reduced to 42 for three on the second day of their Ranji Trophy Group A cricket match. Resuming on 115 for one, Uttar Pradesh could add just 91 runs to their overnight total, losing as many as nine wickets in only 34.4 overs on a day when only 51.4 overs could be bowled because of inclement weather. Thakur wreaked havoc, taking three quick wickets in the morning to push the hosts on to the backfoot early

Bhupathi, Saketh, Jeevan & Balaji given wild card C

HENNAI: India's top tennis players Mahesh Bhupathi, Saketh Myneni, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Sriram Balaji have been granted wild card entries into the doubles draw of Chennai Open, organisers said. Other than offering fans an opportunity to watch top Indian players, the 20th edition of the event will present an exceptional assembly of talent that includes four top-25 players and three 2014 ATP World Tour Award winners. The organizers announced earlier that ace Indian players Somdev Devvarman and Ramkumar Ramanathan have been granted singles wild card entries. India's top doubles specialist Mahesh Bhupathi will partner 27-year-old Saketh Myneni for the first time at the Aircel Chennai Open. It will mark Bhupathi's return to courts after March 2014, when he played in the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Miami with Kevin Anderson. Bhupathi, who has won a staggering 52 career doubles titles, will look at the event as a platform to kick-start the new year on a winning note. He had partner Leander Paes to win the 2011 Chennai Open title. Saketh attained a career high doubles ranking of World No.154 last month. He made his Indian Davis Cup debut at the 2014 Davis Cup

doubles event, partnering Nedunchezhiyan. The wildcard pairing put up a good fight, but lost to the second seeds Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram. Nedunchezhiyan also achieved a career high singles & doubles ranking of 293 & 242 respectively this year, and continues to participate in tournaments around the world. Karti P Chidambaram, chairman, tournament organising committee, Chennai Open and Vice President, Tamil Nadu Tennis Association said, "We are glad to grant wild cards to the prolific Mahesh Bhupathi and also to young players Saketh, Balaji and Nedunchezhiyan Asia/Oceania Group I Tie who have been playing imwith Chinese Taipei, where pressively this year in India he partnered Rohan Bopanna and abroad. in the doubles. Eklavya Dwivedi (23) was the only other batsman, who could chip in with some runs. In reply, Mumbai also did not have an ideal start as they also lost three wickets in 17 overs with their top order back in the pavilion. Both the openers were dismissed by Amit Mishra (2/13). At stumps, Hiken Shah was unbeaten on 14 and Suryakumar Yadav was yet to open his account. In between those two goals, Nigerian recruit Elvis Ozawara netted the second in the 31st minute and Deep Morja the third in the 45thminute as the Colaba side went into the break with a healthy 3-0 lead. ADRID: France international Antoine Griezmann scored a hat-trick as Atletico Madrid produced a stunning secondhalf display to hammer Athletic Bilbao 4-1 away and move to within four points of La Liga leaders Real Madrid. The Spanish champions looked on course for back-toback league defeats for the first time since April 2012 when Mikel Rico gave Athletic a deserved half-time lead yesterday. But Griezmann levelled straight from the kick-off at the start of the second period and completed his hat-trick after Raul Garcia had put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot. Victory moves Atletico back to within three points of Barcelona, who were 5-0 winners over Cordoba on Saturday, in second. However, Real have a game in hand on their two main title rivals as they won their fourth trophy of the year in the Club World Cup final against Argentine side San Lorenzo in Morocco on Saturday. "This was my best match since I've been here. I need to keep on this path and keep working," Griezmann said. At the new San Mames both sides were missing a number of key players with Aymeric Laporte and Ander Iturraspe banned for the hosts, while Atletico were without the suspended duo of Koke and Mario Mandzukic, as well as Miranda through injury. It was the Basque outfit who settled much quicker, and went ahead after 17 minutes when Markel Susaeta's free-kick was expertly nod-

Atletico failed to create anything of note in the opening 45 minutes, and could have been even further behind at the break had Aritz Aduriz decided to shoot when he was released clear on goal by Susaeta rather than trying to turn inside before being crowded out. However, the champions emerged a different side after an inspired half-time pep talk from Diego Simeone and equalised straight from the kick-off as former Real Sociedad winger Griezmann came back to haunt his old Basque rivals once more with a precise header from Juanfran's cross. Seven minutes later Atletico completed the comeback in controversial circumstances as the referee pointed to the spot when Tiago hit the floor under minimal contact between he and Mikel San

India clinch gold in Under-16 Chess Olympiad N

EW DELHI: Top seeds India bagged the gold medal in the World Youth Under-16 Chess Olympiad at Gyor in Hungary in a tight contest. India beat Turkey 3.01.0 in the 10th and final round to clinch the title ahead of Russia and Iran at the FIDE tournament held at the University of West Hungary. Iran were the leaders in the penultimate round but lost their 10th and final round tie against hosts Hungary 1.5-2.5 to settle for the silver in the 54-team tournament. In the final round, India were 0-1 down initially with International Master Diptayan Ghosh losing to Vahap Sanal, but all the other three Indians -IM Murali Karthikeyan, IM Aravindh

Chithambaram and Kumaran Balaji won their respective matches to clinch the gold. Karthikeyan beat Ali Marandi while Chithambaram and Balaji got the better of Volkan Sevgi and Tuna Tuncer respectively. Chithambaram was the best among the Indians in the 10-round tournament, scoring eight points in the nine games he played with eight wins and a loss. Karthikeyan also scored eight points but he played 10 matches with six wins and four draws. Ghosh secured 5.5 out of nine while Balaji won 4.5 points out of nine. WFM G K Monnisha was the fifth player in the Indian team and she collected 0.5 points from her three matches.

Jose inside the area. Once the protests from the home fans and players had finally subsided, Garcia kept his cool to send Gorka Iraizoz the wrong way from the spot. If Ernesto Valverde's men felt hard done by at the penalty decision, they were handed a reprieve 22 minutes from time when Iker Muniain was extremely fortunate to escape with just a yellow card after a reckless studs high challenge into the knee of defender Jose Gimenez. That decision wasn't to prove too contentious, though, as Atletico wrapped up the points five minutes later when Griezmann pounced on a slip by Carlos Gurpegi to calmly stroke the ball past Iraizoz. The Frenchman sealed his first Atletico hat-trick nine minutes from the end thanks to more generous officiating as he tapped into an empty net despite clearly being in

an offside position after the ball ricocheted off Garcia. Elsewhere, Villarreal and Malaga remained in the hunt for the top four with victories over Deportivo la Coruna and Elche respectively. It was a more comfortable afternoon for Villarreal at home to Depor as they recorded a seventh straight win in all competitions 3-0 thanks to Jonathan dos Santos's first goal for the club and two second-half strikes by the in-form Luciano Vietto. Malaga, meanwhile, had to come from behind to record a third consecutive league win after falling behind to David Lomban's header on the verge of halftime. However, second-half goals from Ignacio Camacho and on-loan Liverpool midfielder Luis Alberto mean they join Villarreal and Sevilla on 30 points, just one off Valencia in fourth.

ONLY SHORT STUFF: Short on performance, short on food and short on the wicket

M

ahendra Singh Dhoni has opened a can of worms after the sixth straight loss against Australia in away Tests Down Under. During the post-match interaction, Dhoni slammed a number of aggressive volleys at the hosts. However, the verbal volleys looked to be more scripted rather than genuine. His reasons were mainly off field but didn't dwell on India's shoddy performance in the last three days of the second Test. First, came the wrath against the practice pitches. Wasn't these the same wickets India played on in the past few days. However, it was on the fourth day that Shikhar Dhawan was caught napping to what the skip terms 'uneven bounce'. This resulted in Virat Kohli being sent ahead of Dhawan to bat. Dhoni's version of 'unrest in the dressing room', is absurd and unprofessional. As a fine player in the shorter version and a notable leader, he should have handled his team and communicated better and take quick decisions rather than have waited for the last minute. He added that the team needed a 25-minute window of calm for things to cool down. Mr. Dhoni we all thought you were and are the picture of calmness! If a player is injured, it is the duty of rest of the pack to take on responsibility and not crib about injuries to players. Mitchell Marsh too, was injured and didn’t bowl in the second innings [bowled only six overs in the first innings]. What would have been Dhoni's reaction had Dhawan been knocked by a short-pitched delivery during the match where the batsman would be under the gaze of the camera, which possibly wasn't the case during their pre-match practice. Playing a bowler short, Josh Hazlewood in his debut Test bowled with grit and determination and Mitchell Johnson pounded the 'slinga missiles' during India's second essay. Now comes the second excuse – Food. Poor Ishant

Neil Joshi

THIRD MAN

Sharma and Suresh Raina had to get lunch from outside due to the 'lack of vegetarian food'. Whom should we blame? The Indian management for not conveying their preferences to the authorities or the caterers. In Adelaide, Indian food was arranged by the authorities as they had assigned an Indian chef to take care of their needs. Why wasn't this the case in the second Test? The third part of Dhoni's rants focussed on umpiring decisions not going in India’s favour. Has the Indian skipper suddenly smelt a'rat' or has he thrown his lot with the Decision Review System [DRS]. It has been noted in the past that Dhoni showed a lot of faith in the over enthusiastic bowlers when he allowed them to take the call when India played under the DRS, which resulted in many wrong calls. And when all and sundry didn't work, why was there a need for Rohit Sharma to sledge Mitchell Johnson? Was he complaining about the food to Mitch or the bounce in the practice arena? Guess Mitch taught the Indian bowlers how to effectively bowl short in the fourth innings as he made mincemeat during his innings with the bat. It’s ironic as to how the Indian team bring out the best in the opposition rather themselves. The trio of Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron were clueless as it seemed they had no clue as to what to do with the red cherry, as the Aussies slammed them to every corner of the park. Truly, it was a Test 'short' of everything but not 'short of excuses'. Mr. Dhoni, it’s time the bat and ball does the talking rather than letting your tongue vent its feelings, on 'Boxing Day'.

Binny banking on extra pace to seal World Cup spot N

EW DELHI: Cut-throat competition is expected when it comes to making the final-15 for the 2015 Cricket World Cup and all-rounder Stuart Binny feels the extra pace he has gained of late makes his case stronger ahead of the all important selection early next month. Binny has not made the most of his international opportunities, both with bat and

ball in three Tests and six ODIs. "I have actually gone up on my pace in the last 8-10 months. After entering international cricket, I realised I need to step up on the pace. I worked a bit in the gym and the run up is harder than last year. The results are showing," said Binny when asked about the extra pace he has gained recently. "I have got a bit stronger in

the legs. I was bowling consistent 125 kmph and I have added 3-4 kmph to that. The stronger legs have helped me run in harder than earlier," he said. Binny, however, feels he needs to be more consistent with the bat. He has got starts in three of his four Ranji innings but has only one big knock to his name, the 77 against Tamil Nadu in Bangalore.
