Azad Shrivastav | ADC

With just four days left for the Republic Day celebrations at the Shivaji Park, personnel from different units of the police force with their specially equipped vehicles have begun rehearsals in right earnest.

Meet Captain Divya As the Indian Army's all-women contingent prepares for its firstever presence at the Republic Day parade, its commander expressed hope that seeing the officers march down the Rajpath will inspire more women to don the olive green uniform. Captain Divya Ajith, who scripted history by becoming the first woman cadet in the history of the Army to win the 'Sword of Honour' for best cadet at the passing out parade of the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai in 2010, is now all set to write another,

when she leads the contingent on the ceremonial boulevard on January 26. Captian Divya, who belongs to the Corps of Army Air Defence, feels that after seeing her contingent, many parents will be inspired to send their girls to the Army and many of those girls would themselves be motivated to don the uniform. The 25-year-old woman officer, who hails from Chennai, said, she always wanted to join the Indian Army and after serving for five years, it's an honour for her to lead

the march, in front of the country. The entire contingent has been preparing rigorously since coming to Delhi. From 6-9 am and then 3-6 pm, all seven days, it's been a tough regimen but their training at the OTA is coming in handy. The women contingent would also comprise some women cadets, a Defence official said. A multi-faceted personality, Captain Divya is an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer, percussionist and well-versed in sports like basketball, discus throw, among others.

Shakespeare coined whole lot of new words

Shakespeare is not only known for his enormous contribution to English literature, but also for, unsurprisingly, coining new words when he needed — or merely wanted — them. Can you guess which words he invented? A short list of verbs invented by the Bard are – arouse, besmirch, bet, drug, dwindle, hoodwink, hurry, puke, rant, and swagger. Shakespeare also minted new metaphors, many now cliches, but fresh in his time: 'It’s Greek to me', 'Played fast and loose', 'slept not one wink', 'seen better days', 'knit your brows', 'have your teeth set on edge'.

iPhone has secret software to spy on people: Snowden

The iPhone has secret spyware that lets governments watch users without their knowledge, according to Edward Snowden. The NSA whistleblower doesn’t use a phone because of the secret software, which Snowden’s lawyer says can be remotely activated to watch the user. Edward never uses an iPhone, he’s got a simple phone, said Anatoly Kucherena. The iPhone has special software that can activate itself without the owner having to press a button and gather information about him, that’s why on security grounds he refused to have this phone. Apple has been active in making the iPhone harder for security services to spy on, and the company said that iOS 8 made it impossible for law enforcement to extract users’ personal data, even if they have a warrant. The company has also been active in campaigning for privacy reform after the Snowden revelations, joining with Facebook and Google to call for changes to the law. But recently published files

Edward Snowden

from the NSA showed that British agency GCHQ used the phones UDIDs — the unique identifier that each iPhone has — to track users. While there doesn’t seem to be any mention of such spying software in any of the revelations so far, a range of documents are thought to be still unpublished. Snowden opts not to use the phone for professional reasons, but Kucherena said that whether or not to use one was a personal choice.

DANVE REFUTES ALLEGATIONS OF SCRAPPING RRZ LAW FOR PRIVATE COMPANY Raosaheb Danve

By A Special Correspondent

he state Congress yesterday came down heavily on the BJP government about making the state of Maharashtra the number one in the country. The party made it clear that the state has always been on the top in all sectors including industrial development. Speaking to reporters, the state Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant said, “Our party will welcome the steps taken by the BJP government in the interest of the state, but will not tolerate

tate Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Raosaheb Danve refuted state Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) spokesperson Nawab Mallik's allegation that the BJP-led state government had scrapped the River Regulation Zone (RRZ) Act at the behest of elevatormaker multi-national Schindler. Speaking to newspersons Danve made a startling claim that the rivers in the state were not being polluted due to industrial pollution but were being polluted due to waste water being discharged in the rivers. He added that the RRZ law was amended for further growth of industries and that it was the centre's prerogative to amend RRZ. Mallik had yesterday alleged that the government had given in to the Schindler company which had been trying for the last three years to get the law scrapped so that it could get the licence for its unit. He further remarked that while the BJP which has been crying hoarse over corruption, its Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is holding meetings with company officials in Davos, Switzerland. He added that Switzerland is the place to stash black money. The people who are offering black money and those who are accepting it

isters, he pointed out. Both the state and Centre are insensitive to the needs of the common man and farmers. They are only doing welfare for rich and the corporates. Both the governments do not care for the common man and farmers but are only interested in welfare of the rich and corporates. The quota of nine litres kerosene in PDS has been reduced to five litres. Similarly, 1.77 crore ration card holders in the above poverty line category under the Food Security Act have been removed as beneficiaries, he alleged.

are all there in Davos, Switzerland. Danve stated that the NCP charge is baseless. He claimed that it was the previous Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government which had tried to scrap the law. The state BJP spokesperson stated that his party's government policy is that industrialisation should take place without harming the environment. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is in Davos, Switzerland to bring foreign investment in Maharashtra. Danve termed Mallik's charge as baseless.

Fees in disguise

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JANUARY 23, 2015

After the University cancelled a proposed hike in the fees, colleges ask students to pay an extra amount for library and gymkhana By Yatin Ingle

T

hough the University of Mumbai (MU) has dropped its decision to hike college fees, colleges across the city have been playing it smart. Most colleges, under the guise of upgrading library and gymkhanas, have issued a notice asking their students to pay an amount from Rs 200 to Rs 500. While colleges cannot increase the fees without directions from the University, students are falling prey to this smart technique of the colleges. As per the Maharashtra Universities Act 1994, a University has to declare the fees struc- The notice released by a suburban college asking students to pay extra ture of the courses it offers in fees for gymkhana.

all the colleges affiliated to it. Colleges have to compulsorily follow the fees structure prescribed by the University. None of the college can change the fees of its courses on its own, neither can it demand extra fees from its students. This week, the ADC found out that few colleges have been asking their students to pay an extra amount for upgrading the college library and gymkhana. Students have been asked to pay this fees separately to be excluded from the semester fees. Pradeep Sawant, Senate member and Students Grievance Cell member told the ADC, “Colleges cannot hike the fees without permission from the University. On the other hand, increasing any kind of fees in between an academic year is against the

CITY rules and regulations of the University Act. Students should come to the Grievance cell and lodge a complaint against these colleges so that the University can take necessary action.” In 2013, the fees committee had proposed a 30 per cent fee hike. Later, the Management Council asked the MU to review the proposal. After the review reports were submitted by the committee, the MU had kept a proposal of 25 per cent fees hike which was then opposed by the teachers, senate members and various students' organisations. Though the varsity had ignored the discussion of the fee hike in the Management Council meet held in April, the MU was adamant on increasing the fees but later dropped the decision. The ADC spoke to Dr M A Khan, Registrar, MU, who said, “Colleges cannot increase and implement such fees without directions from the University. The MU will soon look into this and take strict action against erring colleges.”

Salman reeked of alcohol, said the doctor Dr Shashikant Pawar abstracted blood from the actor's body for alcohol test By Santia Dudi

D

r Shashhikant Pawar while deposing in the court room presided over by special sessions judge D W Deshpande said that at the time of physical examination, the actor Salman Khan reeked of alcohol. Dr Pawar, the onduty medical officer at the JJ hospital, had abstracted Salman's blood for the alcohol test. He said, “I took verbal consent from the accused and abstracted blood from his body, asked the ward boy to seal it according to the procedure. The sealing was done in my presence and the standard procedure was followed. I also did a physical examination of the accused. The

physical examination is based on the breath, speech and eyes. His pupils were slightly dilated and he smelled of alcohol but his body didn't seem to be under the influence of alcohol. No abnormality was detected from his central nervous system, respiratory system. But his blood pressure was on the high side.” During the cross-examination Salman's lawyer Shrikant Shivade asked if lack of sleep could be a reason for the dilation of pupils, and the witness agreed. The

witness also said that the smell is one of the most important factors to judge the influence of alcohol but agreed to advocate Shivade's contention that there are many other odours and smells too. When asked about the case papers, the witness said that the case papers are a carbon copy of the Emergency police register (EPR) and he is not sure why the word 'alcohol' which was there on the EPR didn't imprint on the case papers. But he denied of there being any fabrication. Earlier D K Bhalshankar (58), a chemical analyst at Mumbai forensic laboratory, told the court that he examined the blood sample he received from the JJ hospital and found out that the alcohol test was positive. And the amount of alcohol in the sample was above the legal limit. On September 28, 2002, a Landcruiser ran over the pavement near a bakery at

drug peddler was arrested from suburban Jogeshwari on Thursday for alleged possession of two kg of methamphetamine drug valued at Rs 25 lakh in the international market, police said. “Based on a tip-off that peddler Jhakir Sayyad (32) was scheduled to arrive near Lotus Park building in Jogeshwari this morning, the police laid a trap and nabbed him,” said Subhash Wele, senior inspector at Oshiwara police station.

Two kg of methamphetamine was seized from his possession, the officer said, adding that the contraband was estimated to be valued at Rs 25 lakh. “We are investigating whom the consignment was supposed to be delivered to,” Wele added. Earlier Sayyad had been arrested with charas by the narcotics branch of the Mumbai Police and convicted for six years in that case. A few months ago he walked out of the jail after completing his sentence.

Methamphetamine is usually peddled at rave parties with street names like MD, Meow Meow and Crystal, the police said. Rampant increase in the peddling and consumption of methamphetamine has led the Mumbai Police to conduct several raids across the city since the past few months. Youngsters from affluent to lower class families are addicted to the drug as the market for the contraband has moved from the elite circles to local areas, police said.

only 5,136 are for women. A plan was issued by the SWM department of the BMC on January 24, last year, that time the BMC had noted a list of sites where toilets could be built for women, from all the 24 civic wards in the city, who in turn were asked to submit details within 15 days. However, the plan failed, despite having a budget of Rs 75 lakh. There were followups by activists of the Right to Pee campaign, who have been demanding better public toilet facilities for women since 2011. The campaign will have representatives of 30 NGOs across the city. Last year, in October, a 10-member committee including BMC and NGOs was formed to look into the issue. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

Govt’s promise: 11 lakh affordable houses Continued from pg 1 « social justice and tribal development will be pooled together for the scheme. Mehta stated that the government has sent notices to five public trusts in Mumbai on whose lands almost 25 per cent of the city slums are located. Besides this the government has sought report on the 1,200 Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) projects, some of which have never taken off. All such SRA projects where no construction has been made for many years now despite approvals will be cancelled. Replying to queries over the Dharavi redevelopment scheme, Mehta stated that the government is contemplating a fiveyear tax holiday for industrial units in the scheme. In an another major decision the government has decided to compile a database of all the pre-1995 and pre-2000 legal slums by registering all the slumdwellers so that henceforth slumdwellers cannot register themselves in more than one scheme. Besides, even the names of dependents living with the extended families will also be registered in separate columns. Mehta said that the software is being created wherein the slumdwellers will get a unique registration number.

otel, restaurant and bar owners who rent out their premises to paan stall owners, beware! The sale of any type of banned products including gutka, paan masala, and flavoured tobacco by the paanwala could land you in trouble. As per the provisions framed under the guidelines of the Food Safety and Standard Act (FSSA), the owner of the hotel premises is liable to be booked along with the paan stall owner who is found to be involved in the trade of the banned tobacco products. This was revealed by Assistant FDA Commissioner, Rajendra Runwal, during an interactive session with local hoteliers in Mira Road. Selling banned gutka

products which is an offence under the FSSA and also the IPC, could land the accused behind bars. “Hotel owners renting out their premises to pan stall owners should be very careful as the application of the newly enacted FSSA imposed along with the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, ensures that those flouting laws are not let off easily,” warned Runwal. It should be noted that under the FSSA, gutka has been categorised as a food product, and therefore should not contain substances injurious to health, like tobacco. Apart from regulations of the Food Safety and Standards (prohibition and restrictions on sales) Regulations, 2011, the FDA invokes sections 488, 272, 273 and 328 of the IPC against offenders.

Following the appointment of the new TMC commissioner, Sanjeev Jaiswal, and under his directions, officials managed to collect taxes to the tune of total 64 crores, 61 lakhs of average tax in 10 days in the TMC coffers. This has produced a spurt in the average income of TMC which has risen steeply to to 6 crores, 46 Lakhs from, 3 crores, 14 Lakhs after the appointment of new commissioner. After learning that the corporation (TMC) was suffering financial losses resulting in development projects being stalled, the commissioner held special meetings for the same with the officers by giving them deadlines for tax collections. This has helped the TMC to collect taxes, as officials were also asked to seal the shops and water taps etc., which had not paid their dues for so many years. On getting to learn of this, citizens accor started paying their taxes and this has helped to augment the income of TMC.

civic body to provide these places for the construction of this partly underground and elevated route. Of these plots, there were three gardens – Bhatia Baug, Nardulla Tank Maidan and Sane Guruji Maidan along with five other open spaces. The plots will be given each at a nominal rent of Re 1 for a period of 11 months. However, the lease can be extended which means that they will be out of bounds for people till the construction is completed. The MMRCL will use the plots for constructing metro

stations, inward-outward rooms, ventilation shafts, godowns and depots and TBM launching purposes. While the BMC has agreed to provide 14 plots, it has expressed its inability to provide the land at Nair Dental Hospital. The other two plots can be given to the MMRCL after due deliberations with concerned parties, said civic officials. Though the BMC has decided to allot the plots at nominal rates, it will henceforth provide land to MMRCL at market rates for Metro-III project. The suggestion,

which was made by Shiv Sena corporator Shraddha Jadhav, was passed by the Improvements committee. Jadhav said, “The BMC is not benefited since it has no stake in this project. Then why should it provide its land at a nominal rate? Henceforth it should charge market rate to the MMRCL.” Deputy municipal commissioner Kishor Kshirsagar said, “The allotment of plots are only for temporary period. They will be given back to the BMC once the project works are completed.” khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

Rats leaving sinking ship Q

uite a few Congress leaders are leaving the sinking ship. There is a sort of stalemate in the party and nobody seems to be making an effort to get things going. There is a sort of paralysis which seems to have affected the top leaders. This being the case, it is reported, that there is growing frustration in the party. Some Congress leaders have decided to leave the party. They are openly criticising the two leaders — Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi — and praising leaders of the BJP. Janardhan Dwivedi, a close aide of Sonia Gandhi, was all praise for Mr. Narendra Modi. Modi appeared to be close to Indian-ness, he said. The BJP today, he said, was associated with ‘Indian-ness’ while the Congress was far removed from it. The Congress party was shocked by his observation and demanded his removal. Soon after, Dwivedi made a u-turn and said he was wrongly reported. Another leader of the Congress — a state minister— has left the Congress, saying the Congress is finished. Defeated at the centre and in all the states where there have been elections. In Delhi, the poll panel chief is not Rahul Gandhi but it is a small, almost unknown leader Ajay Maken. The party rout in Delhi elections is certain. A party which had a dominating role in the political scenario since Independence has been decimated. Congress leaders themselves say that the party has no future. Maybe the reason for this is ten-years of corrupt rule at the centre. The end of the party has begun and by the time the next national elections take place, it will be no better than other small political parties in the country.

HE economic scene of the country is emanating a refreshing, energetic verve. From the stage of reflecting increased expectations of economic vibrancy and growth after the assumption of office by the NDA government, a notable degree of satisfaction is palpable at the apparently successful completion of some necessary groundwork, which has been fulfilled through the effective working of and coordination among the government and various participants of the country’s economy. The domestic economy seems poised to begin an era of gradually vibrant, yet balanced, growth. The viewpoint of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as regards the Indian economy, expressed in its flagship publication, the “World Economic Outlook”, entails that there is a credible possibility that India would become the fastest growing economy, registering a 6.3 per cent growth rate, within the next two years. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has lowered the interest rate slightly than before. It has buoyed investors; RBI’s Governor, Dr. Rajan, has been lauded by the government and the industrialists. This is also an occasion of a manifestation of compatibility between the country’s fiscal and monetary authorities. As inflation has been greatly reduced than before, the RBI, through government prodding, has possibly come around to realizing that a certain amount of constructive flexibility on its part, at this juncture, would provide the requisite adherence to the economy for potential burgeoning. The scale of sundry domestic investments would increase. The Finance Minister, Mr. Jaitley, has already announced the government’s decision to increase public expenditure to help facilitate an economic momentum for certain other sectors.

keen watch and interest of investors, policy makers and economic analysts. The reduction in the price of global crude oil prices has brought in its wake another positive attribute for the country’s economy. According to the chief economist of “Nomura India”, the country is registering a noticeable surplus in its Current Account (CA) for the first time after seven years. The expected CA balance is bound to record a surplus of 1.5 per cent of the “Gross Domestic Product” (GDP) the market value of all final goods and services produced within a nation’s borders during a given period - in the first quarter of 2015, relative to the CA deficit of about 1.6 per cent of the GDP for the whole of 2014. a fall in the prices of crude oil the current net import bill is not exceeding the country’s net earnings record from its export. As an aftermath, the country’s “Trade Balance”, which is the sum total of export earnings after subtracting the import spending, is encouragingly in the positive. The Indian economy is justifiably open to international transactions. rising investor confidence, reduced political risk due to the established political stability at the country’s federal seat of governance, added government spending, and CA surplus in the export-import dynamics, the country’s GDP is set to record a high mark in value.

Consumption level to rise A crucial aspect of the Indian economic narrative is the laudable decision of the central government to transfer at least Rs 33,000 Cr, as part of the “Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana”, into the bank accounts of the concerned beneficiaries, over the next few months. This necessary social expenditure would, somewhat sooner than much later, enable the level of the country’s consumption level to rise higher than before, because the effective implementation of the particulars of this scheme would administer a long awaited corrective of uplifting the poorer sections of the society from the swamp of misery and poverty. After having taken care of the basic welfare requirements of this section of the population, the principle of “Phenomenon of Rising Expectations” would take effect, whereby they would look forward to increased and better consumption and investments for a further amelioration of their livelihoods. Both, household consumption and investments, would record an added higher value than the prevailing mark. The energy and the power sectors are also being geared for more fruitful economic activity than before. The government intends to lobby U.S. President, Barack Obama, during his upcoming visit to India, to withdraw prevailing American sanctions from ONGC, Indian Oil and, Oil India Ltd, for their economic engagements with Iran. It would smoothen the way for these companies to engage in commercial activities in the rest of the international market. India has also resolved to embark on crossborder power trading with several SAARC countries, through integrated power grids, thereby opening yet another avenue for national earnings. Agreements with Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh have been achieved, while confabulations with Sri Lanka are taking place. India’s economy is apparently being comprehensively worked upon to ensure a significantly improved national GDP; quantitatively and qualitatively.

Krishna and the teacher

widow from a village in Bengal didn’t have the money to pay her son’s bus fare, for she had enrolled him in a school far away from home. The boy would have to cross a forest all by himself. In order to reassure him, she said: “Don’t be afraid of the forest, son. “Ask Lord Krishna to be with you. He will hear your prayer.” The boy did what his mother told him to do; Krishna appeared and began to take him to school every day. On his teacher’s birthday, the boy asked his mother for money to buy him a gift. “We don’t have money, son. Ask your brother Krishna to arrange a gift.” On the next day, the boy told his problem to Krishna. He gave him a pitcher full of milk. Cheered up, the boy handed the pitcher to his teacher. But as the other gifts were pret-

tier, his teacher didn’t give any attention to it. “Take this pitcher to the kitchen,” said the teacher to an assistant. The assistant did what he was told to do. As he tried to empty the pitcher, however, he noticed that it would fill up again by itself. Immediately, he went to tell it to the profes-

MATTER & SPIRIT sor, who got perplexed and asked the boy: “Where did you get this pitcher and what is the trick that keeps it full?” “The one who gave it to me was Krishna, the Lord of the Forest.” The teacher, the students and the helper, all of them laughed. “There is no God in the forest, this is superstition,” said the teacher. “If there is one, let us go outside to see him.”

The entire group went out. The boy began calling for Krishna but he didn’t appear. Desperate, he made a last try: “Brother Krishna, my teacher wants to see you. Please appear.” At that moment, a voice that echoed through all corners came from the forest: “How is it that he wants to see me, son? He doesn’t even believe I exist!”

The silence of the night A Sufi master and his disciple were walking in an African desert. When the night fell, both of them built a tent and prepared to rest. “What a silence,” observed the disciple. “Never say ‘what a silence’,” answered the master. “Always say: I am not being able to listen to nature.” — Paulo Coelho

CONGRATULATIONS to Kiran Bedi for her courage in speaking the truth about the RSS. The Congress has always been severely criticising the RSS for the fear of antagonising the minorities; purposefully ignoring the constructive attitude of the Sangh Parivar. For the kind information of the 'secularists', I wish to recall that none other than Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had permitted the RSS volunteers to participate in the Republic Day Parade of January 26, 1964.

Bedi versus Kejriwal

— Jorhat Singh, Kandivali

THIS has reference to your editpiece 'Kejriwal's challenge for debate at Jantar Mantar!' (ADC, Jan 21) in which you have rightly remarked, “A request for a debate in public is, to say the least, ridiculous” and that this is a blatant attempt to trap Kiran Bedi and thus cause a setback in her campaigning by making the crowd cheer some of his 'choice remarks'. You have also correctly pointed out that the AAP chief is under the illusion that he is still a big hit with the Delhiites without realising that once bitten they will be more than twice shy. For a novice to politics, to have become the chief minister of the capital-state, was a gift handed to him by the Congress in its attempt to keep the BJP out of power. Its admission now that it was big mistake to have supported AAP has come rather too late in the day since the damage has already been done and, having tasted power too early, the chief is playing all his stunts to regain the 'Paradise Lost', It will be in the fitness of things if the Congress supports the BJP this time for making amends

end only on the eve of election date. Kejriwal trying to be smart made a remark about accepting bribe from the opposition and at the same time vote of his party is taken seriously by Election Commission. Instead of asking for votes, the political parties bring clout to divert their attention. In a recent challenge to CM candidate Kiran Bedi, Arvind Kejriwal is calling for a public debate with him. This is the first time such things are called for. We are not in the US to have such a public debate to express our stand. We cannot become USA overnight as Arvind Kejriwal assumes. There is no need for a public debate as public know in and out of politics. It is fresh in their mind how the AAP leader let go the opportunity given to him – courtesy Congress – and how he spoiled his own chances to rule the state. Now he is trying to dictate terms and conditions as an outsider. Road show and other activities look attractive but it has no substance. AAP is scared of handing over the CM's chair to the opposition. It appears an uphill task for Kejriwal to woo the public to vote for him. Kejriwal should learn the basics of clean politics rather than going for cheap publicity.

IN Delhi election, the AAP is still in the race, as the recent survey says. I was shocked that even after the AAP leaders' past drama, the Delhi Public has a soft corner for the AAP. Disappointed President

PRESIDENT Pranab Mukherjee’s has sent a reminder to the government on the constitutional restrictions on the resort to the ordinance route. Having signed a series of ordinances in recent weeks on the government’s advice, once or twice reportedly after seeking a clarification on the nature of the urgency that necessitated them, President Mukherjee has the moral and constitutional authority to drive

Delhi than wasting their time in front of cameras in television studios by indulging in a slugfest. Both are capable leaders apart from being highly qualified academically to make an positive impact on the political scene of our country and fight the elections in the right spirit to serve the people of Delhi whom they represent. One of them would be the next Chief Minister of Delhi but the one who loses should use his past friendship and work together with the winner to work for the betterment of the people. Both Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal are disciples of Anna Hazare and while they may head rival political party's at the moment, both should stick to the ideologies of their mentor and work for the welfare of the people. Both, Kejriwal and Bedi have fought many hard fights together before and there is no reason why friends turned foes cannot turn friends again in future to fight corruption together in the coming times.

REMINDER: President Pranab Mukherjee has reminded the NDA government that the ordinance route must not be taken too often. home the message to the government that it ought to be mindful of the limitations of the ordinance route. He has underscored that or-

dinances can be promulgated only “to meet certain exigencies and under compelling circumstances”, setting out the legal context in which the power may be invoked. And by concurrently speaking out against the tendency to use disruption as a means of Parliamentary intervention, Mukherjee has subtly questioned the traditional wisdom of opposition parties that extracting an assurance or concession across the floor by willfully obstructing proceedings is part of a legitimate exercise of Parliamentary duties. In practice, both issues are intricately interlinked. It is often the combination of obstinacy on the part of the Treasury Benches and the Opposition’s obstructionist tactics that lead to legislative impasse and, further, to the promulgation of ordinances. Governments are increasingly eager to avoid constructive engagement with the opposition because the option of legislating through the use of presidential power is available to them. — Bhagwan Thadani, Pune

‘Canine officers’ sweep Delhi

EW DELHI: One of them was part of the elite US Navy SEALS team that hunted down the dreaded Osama bin Laden and now this special squad is in the Capital as part of US President Barack Obama's security drill. No, these are not the US marines but are American 'canine officers' who are here to help sanitise and conduct anti-sabotage checks at some of the prime venues where Obama will visit during his three-day trip to India starting this Sunday. These officers have been also given military ranks. Sources said today that an elite team of seven Belgian 'Malinois' dogs, one of whom who assisted the US Navy SEALS in neutralising bin Laden in Abbottabad in Pakistan on May 2, 2011 have been flown down here. The immediate task of the canines is to secure ITC Maurya--which will be Obama's home for three days--along with their counterparts from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police(ITBP). Officials familiar with the canines' operation said both the dog squads have been deployed to “sanitise and secure” the luxury hotel and have been tasked with sniffing different flanks of the

hotel. After this, another batch of these four-legged soldiers will be pressed into service for similar duties at Rajpath, Rashtrapati Bhavan and a few other locations. “The first batch of about seven US Navy SEALS dogs have arrived here. They have been tasked to work in coordination with a chosen squad of Labradors and German Shepherds of the ITBP. The US has given them military ranks and call them canine officers,” officials said.

They said a joint security teams of US and Indian sleuths decided to deploy the combination of these two units so that “nothing is left to chance.” “The ITBP dogs are trained to perform in Indian conditions. They will complement the work of the American dog squad. Another batch of the US dogs team is expected to come later,” they said. The ITBP, a border guarding force under the Union Home Ministry and a centre for excellence in police and

military canine subjects, has already pooled in a 30-dogs squad for the entire visit of the US President, who will be the chief guest of this years main Republic Day parade here on January 26. The Belgian 'Malinois', a litter of an Israeli male Malinois crossed with an American bitch, is one of the most tough and sturdy dog breeds which are used by a majority of military forces world over including by Indian paramilitary forces in the anti-Naxal operations domain. The dog, which has a heavy snout and a big head, can detect suspect human presence, explosives and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) with a precise correctness and it is intelligent enough to communicate these signals through a nod of his head and not by barking, which could lead to alerting of the target. The ITBP 'K9' squad has been given the most important tasks to perform for this high-profile visit and they will be performing their task in the inner ring along with sniffer dogs of other agencies like the Delhi Police, NSG, CISF and CRPF. A handful of ITBP dogs have been kept as reserve for emergency anti-sabotage sniffing tasks.

Sharad Yadav defends Kejriwal’s ‘take money’ remark N

EW DELHI: Arvind Kejriwal today got support for his contentious remark, asking voters to vote for AAP after taking “bribes” from BJP and Congress, from an unexpected quarter as JD(U) president Sharad Yadav defended the comment and sought review of EC's notice to him. Yadav sought to “justify” the Kejriwal's comment saying there is nothing wrong in it. “Election Commission had made efforts to prevent money and muscle power in the elections and a person is saying that take money from BJP and Congress but do not sell your auspicious vote. “So what's wrong with it...It is justified,” he said. At an election rally on Sunday, Kejriwal said, “It is election time. When people both from BJP and Congress come offering money, don't refuse, accept... Some have looted money from 2G, some have looted money from coal scam. “Take money from both the parties but vote for AAP. We will fool them this time. They have been deceiving

Sharad Yadav us for the last 65 years. Now it's our turn.” The comments drew sharp reactions from all the quarters and the EC issued show cause notice to Kejriwal saying the comment is a “violation of poll code” as it is “abetting and promoting electoral offence of bribery.” Seeking a review of the move, Yadav has written to Chief Election Commissioner HS Brahma saying, “I request you to kindly review your decision for issuing a show cause notice to AAP in the interest of democracy.”

EW DELHI: Delhi Police today started questioning some journalists to whom Sunanda Pushkar had spoken hours before her death in January last year amidst its efforts to piece together the sequence of events that preceded her demise in mysterious circumstances. The police is trying to find

out whether she had mentioned to them about the IPL controversy or her husband Shashi Tharoor's alleged relations with Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar or about any plans of hers to hold a press conference. The journalists had been mentioning that Sunanda had suspected Tharoor of having an affair with Tarar and have also quoted her of saying that she had “taken

the flak for him (Tharoor) in the IPL (controversy)”, police sources said while explaining why one male and two female journalists were called for questioning by the Special Investigating Team (SIT). There has also been a talk that the 52-year-old wife of Tharoor had planned to hold a press conference on January 17, the day she was found

dead in a room of a five-star hotel here. The sources said more journalists may be called as police wants to speak to all those who were in contact with her in the days preceding her death. Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi journalists have been called to “understand the sequence of events”. PTI

accounts I that have read, it’s a mysterious place. These aspects inspired me to write a story centering around it.

Tell us about your book The Beckoning of Gyanganj. The Beckoning of Gyanganj is the story of Ravi Deka, an avid trekker who loves the Himalayas. On one of his treks, Ravi gets separated from the rest of his group and a series of events lead him to a strange, stunning and beautiful place called Gyanganj. There, he has visions about painful events dating back to several hundred years. In a nutshell, this story is about the life events of Ravi, his love Risha, Swami Raghunath, Princess Lata and the people of Mayurpura Kingdom. Above all, in a series of events, the story depicts the invisible, yet influential roles of divine saints belonging to Gyanganj. What was your inspiration behind the story? I have always been fascinated by the idea of a princess falling in love with a common man and the lengths that he can go to in order to win her from the clutches of a ruthless king. Also, I came across several stories where a king or a prince would torture commoners, and this saddened me greatly. Through this book, I have tried to weave my own story encompassing all these aspects, while focusing on love, romance, spiritualism and politics. I hope my effort will appeal to readers of all ages.

What is it about the Himalayas that fascinates you? In spite of the risks of landslides and falling rocks, I feel secure in the lap of the Himalayas, just like how a child would feel secure in the embrace of his father, and this is reflected in my writing. You can’t ignore the influence and enormity of the majestic mountain range on my writing. As you read the book, you will feel the might of the Himalayas.

Why did you choose Gyanganj? I have read extensively about Gyanganj and Shambalain in spiritual books and that has made me curious about this sacred and mystical place. Based on all the

Do you plan on writing more novels? What subjects do you have in mind? I am currently writing a love story set in the ’80s. This is loosely based on a real life account. I cannot wait to see the reaction of younger readers and how they would relate to a romantic relationship that existed when there was no mobile phone, SMS, internet, email or WhatsApp. I also intend to write a self-help book with the hope that it will help my readers tackle several issues. I might even write a sequel to The Beckoning of Gyanganj to bring the story to a logical end. I would also like to re-write the stories of my first book, Footprints.

rtist Ramesh Thorat breaks away from his usual art style with his new collection of paintings. His latest collection is rustic and features rough, edgy strokes. When viewed as a whole, Ramesh’s paintings offer thought provoking insights about people and their relationship with the society that they live in. While he beautifully depicts the simple joys of everyday life and highlights ordinary situations, his artwork also shows audiences the dialogue a person has with himself or herself and urge you to introspect. Speaking about the philosophy and thought behind his new collection, Ramesh uses a verse, telling us, “I am travelling towards the infinite blue sky/ I knock the sky but there is no door, no wall./ So I drink the sky, I drink the blue.../ I drink the wisdom too, making self infinite to encompass everything with compassion.’’ When January 27 to February 2, from 11am to 7pm Where Jehangir Art Gallery, AC-2, 161, Kala Ghoda Contact 22843989

he next time someone walks behind me, they’re going to be treated to a familiar smell as I walk by. No, I’m not shamelessly announcing a foot odour problem, I’ve just been walking around wearing a pair of shoes from Scentra, a new entrant to the suddenly booming ballet pump and loafer industry. The new shoe brand has been designed in California and manufactured in Spain, and when I heard about the concept, I took a timeout to laugh a little. Although a thumb rule is not to judge a book by its cover or a pair of shoes by its tag line, or the hashtag written inside the box (Nice to feet you, in this case), it’s hard to steer clear of feeling something about this concept. Because the concept in question, is scented shoes. Yes, smelly feet culprits rejoice — there’s finally a pair of shoes that masks the smell, (hopefully) even when you lift your feet out of your shoes in public. Though with any luck, that’s not a habit that these shoes will encourage too much. However, I may have been exaggerating a little bit. People aren’t going to be enveloped in a bubblegum bubble as I walk past. In fact, when you’re actually wearing them, they’re just like regular loafers, albeit in a pretty shade. The novelty lies in unboxing the shoes, along with (you’re going to do it too, believe me) gingerly sniffing around them after you’ve worn them through the week, wondering how and why they still smell of bubblegum. I was a little wary of the bright orange shade I received at first, but as soon as you slip your feet into the loafers, all scepticism is forgotten, and the laughing ceases. Because, whether the scent appeals to you or not, these shoes are ridiculously comfortable. The organic cotton body is slim, but there’s enough cushioning for tired feet and the bendy base make walking a dream. I learnt later that they have a certified orthopedic sole and are made with breathable, eco-friendly fabric, which was probably the source of all my comfort. If you’re looking to match colour to flavour, you’re going to be a little disappointed. I was relieved, because I find

orange aromas largely offensive, so the fact that they have only a strawberry dye scent sits well with me. This means that when you buy different pairs of shoes (if your wallet can stand to) you will be picking them up for how they look and, not how they smell. They have a large variety of colours and prints (the polka dots are a personal favourite!) on offer and the prices cross the `2,000 mark and hover till just below `3,000. So, do the shoes leave your feet smelling of strawberry all day long? Not quite. You can smell them from a mile away when you’re holding them up, but on your feet they’ve got a very light scent that

you can’t really smell at all. The scent will not last forever, but it doesn’t seem to be letting up just yet. Scentra’s collection doesn’t serve any other purpose apart from being a fun concept and making shoes smell less offensive when they’re lying around — but coupled with the insane comfort and attractive designs, that seems to be enough to pick up a pair. My only grouse is the price — at `2,700 for my bright orange loafers, I’m not sure if I would buy them on impulse, or too often. Where Available on www.jabong.com and www.scentra.com

HAAocHi turns one our first outing to Haaochi was a splendid one, but did they charm us a second time? shirley Mistry tells you all about it

I

had the pleasure of reviewing Haaochi when they had just launched around a year ago. I say pleasure, because the food was splendid — in terms of the variety of dishes, taste and texture. I vividly remember sampling dish after dish, being pleasantly surprised by each bite. They offered dishes devoid of the standard chilli-garlic-soya sauce blend and the flavours were subtle, distinct and didn’t need the addition of a heap of chillies to make them palatable. So, when Haaochi launched a special menu to commemorate being in business for a year, I couldn’t wait to try it out. While the experience this time around was good, it didn’t match up to the first one — the food didn’t meet the quality or taste that I expected. We started our meal with Tom Yam Ginseng Soup (`200), and while the zingy, spicy, fresh broth was lovely, it was marred by the large chunks of vegetables and prawns that made it difficult to eat. We delved right into our appetisers and tried a host of different dumplings. Our selection included the Carrot and Prawn Dumpling (off the menu), Crystal Vegetable Dumpling (chicken variant for `350), River Fish Dumpling (off the menu) and Bokchoy and Water Chestnut Dumpling (prawn variant for `385). Now, while I usually love my non-vegetarian fare as far as

dumplings are concerned, the vegetable and bokchoy-water chestnut dumplings were clear winners here. They were stuffed with a subtly spiced filling and offered a good mix of textures. The fish and prawn ones, on the other hand, were complete disappointments. They were bland, pasty and the casing was too thick — making me feel as though I was eating a flour paste. Swiftly moving on, we tried Thai Fish Cakes (`250) and Vegetable Spring Rolls (`250). Out of the two, we loved the fish cakes, which were probably the best dish of the night. Spicy and full of Thai curry flavour — we couldn’t get enough of this appetiser. The fact that they don’t use Basa fish to make it is another plus point, as the fish used had a taste of its own, and the flavours were lipsmacking. We recommend you order two portions, because you are going to be really reluctant to share. In fact, if you are looking to pick an appetiser to accompany your drinks, this preparation,

>> The new menu at Haaochi has delivers a mix of hits and misses which is bursting with flavour, is perfect. However, the spring rolls were a major let-down. They tasted like run-of-the-mill spring rolls and the only Thai addition was that they had an overpowering hit of lemongrass. As part of our main course we tried the Chicken Green Curry (`500), Lotus & Asparagus Red Curry (`400) and Prawn Penang Curry (off the menu), paired with Royal Fried Rice (`400) and Phad Thai Noodles (`350). The chicken curry was lovely — its crisp, mild and refreshing flavours hit home with us and paired well with the fried rice that was chockfull of crunchy vegetables. The asparagus curry was delicious as well; the vegetable that rarely makes it to Indian restaurants got its due in this preparation. However, the prawn curry was a thorough letdown because its base tasted exactly like the asparagus one (which was served to us first).

When Up to January 31 Where Hotel Sun N Sand, 39, Juhu Beach, Juhu Contact 30151030 Meal for two `3,000 Alcohol served Yes (pint of beer `250 onwards) Pad Thai noodles are known world-over for their lemony, spicy, pungent taste and the lovely textural profile that comes from the addition of fried onions and peanuts. These two ingredients were suspiciously missing from our portion of Phad Thai and the taste fell flat as well. The flavours didn’t pop and it can be best described as a gloopy mess. Wearily, we proceeded towards dessert and tried the Molten Lava Cake (`375). Although we aren’t fans of this dish, it seemed like a safe bet. Boy were we wrong! After a considerably long wait, we were served dessert that was practically raw batter. With only the top centimetre resembling a properly baked cake, we were faced with a runny batter, which led us to drop our spoons immediately. It’s safe to say that Haaochi’s new menu has a few hits and definitely a lot more misses. But, visit them for the fish cakes and the lovely service, and try any dessert but the Molten Lava Cake!

and chillies is a new pan-Asian restaurant that has set up shop in Mahim. dev goswami tells you what to expect from this friendly neighbourhood joint Where and chillies, Near Cannosa High

I >> The drinks at and chillies are disappointing, but the food is worth trying

t’s not everyday that you hear of a new restaurant opening in Mahim. With the Bandra-Worli Sea Link bypassing this suburb (which in the pre-Sea Link era was a vital link between north and south Mumbai), this is not the most prime location to open a restaurant. However, this doesn’t seem like something that pan-Asian restaurant, and chillies, is worried about. The label is three-years-old — they have a restaurant in Worli, which was a revamped version of the 60-year-old Shree Dutta Bhuvan, run by Shankar Nalawade. His grandchildren, Rahul, Rohit and Vaishnavi Nalawade launched this restaurant, which promises pan-Asian food that doesn’t contain MSG (Monosodium glutamate). Situated on the main road, opposite the well-known Cannosa School, the restaurant isn’t hard to find. The décor, from inside as well as outside, reminds you of a friendly, neighbourhood restaurant and is nothing to write home about. So, I focussed on their menu, which offers dishes from various Asian cuisines along with a healthy selection of drinks. You’re better off picking a standard spirit here, because none of the three cocktails that I tried (And Chillies Martini, Asian Mist and Long Island Ice Tea, priced at `375, `350 and `375, respectively) were up to the mark. Syrupy and not well-balanced, none of them really worked. The food, however, was a different story. The Kari Laksa (`175), was a rich, creamy soup, and although it promises to be fiery hot, it is not very spicy and has subtle flavours of ginger and turmeric that lend it a comforting feel. From their assorted dumpling platter (`215 onwards), I liked the chicken dumpling the most. It was well-prepared and offered a good balance of flavours. I wasn’t impressed with their Oyster Chilli Chicken (`265) entrée — while the pepper and scallion-based sauce was good, the chicken was overcooked, resulting in a chewy, rubbery texture. The Indonesian

Prawn Curry (`395), on the other hand, was a delight. The aromatic curry, enhanced by the well-cooked prawns, went perfectly with the Chilli Garlic Rice (`195), which had a delightful hit of burnt garlic. I also tried the Bangkok Fried Rice (`195), which I didn’t like as much — the spices over-powered the basil flavour, which would have really made this dish stand out. The Nasi Goreng (`195) was alright — I usually like nasi goreng, but here, the flavours didn’t stand out and it lacked seasoning. I ended my meal with a Tum Tum Krob (`175) — red water chestnuts in coconut milk cream. It’s an interesting preparation and fortunately, wasn’t cloyingly sweet. The chestnuts add a nice crunch to this creamy dessert that is worth a try. Overall, and chillies won’t blow your mind. It’s an affordable restaurant that offers decent food. The menu is a little heavy on chilli-based dishes, but apart from a few, the addition of chillies doesn’t destroy the actual flavours and so, I’m not complaining. Is it worth making a trip all the way to Mahim? No. But, if you’re passing by, or live in the area, you can head here for a pocketfriendly and comforting meal.

>> Satara has a number of forts that will give you a peek into history

Satara You might not consider Satara a weekend destination, but this erstwhile capital of the Maratha kingdom actually houses several forts and monuments, giving you a peek into its rich history. The city also boasts of a valley of flowers, various lakes and a few waterfalls. However, the numerous forts, with their scenic views, are what make this city truly worth visiting over a long weekend. n Getting there: Satara is easily accessible by road as well as via rail. A drive will take you around 5-6 hours to cover (it’s 255km away from Mumbai), while a train journey takes around 6-7 hours. You can also travel by bus, but remember that buses usually take over six hours to reach.

Republic Day is bringing us a three-day weekend this year, and it’s the perfect time to encourage the travel bug in you, says Dev Goswami. Pick from these places to make the most of it

DanDeli national Park If you love wildlife, use this break to take a trip to Dandeli National Park, located near the Maharashtra-Karnataka border. This includes a long drive, but it is definitely worth a visit, because the park boasts of unique wildlife such as sloth bears, tigers, panthers, sambars and bush grail. You can look forward to safari drives, nature walks and treks, while adventure buffs can head to the Kali river, which offers water rafting. There are conventional hotels, as well as tents and lodges located in the jungle that offer off-beat accommodation. n Getting there: Your best bet would be to travel by car, because public transportation from Mumbai to Dandeli is almost non-existent. It’s around 570km away from Mumbai and the drive will take you around 8-9 hours. Get on the National Highway No. 4 and drive up to Kittur, from where you will have to exit to head towards Dandeli. If you need to travel by public transport, you can board a train from Karjat to go to Hubli in Karnataka, from where you can either hire a taxi or catch another train to go to Dandeli.

n a city where travelling is limited to going to and from work, a three-day weekend is a luxury. We’ve already told you about the different events that are taking place in the city over the long weekend, but if you want to get away from the hustle-bustle, visit some of these places. And, don’t worry, we’ve left the over-populated Lonavala, Goa and Matheran off this list!

Perfect for beach bums, Ganpatipule offers some of the best beaches on the Konkan coast. This small town, known for the Swayambhu Ganpati Temple, has something for everyone. If scenic views are your thing, the great vantage points at most of the beaches will offer breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea. For adventure buffs, there are water sport activities at Gaywadi beach, which is located just a few kilometers away from the main Ganpatipule town. There are several hotels and beach resorts where you can stay, and you can also head to the 17th century Jaigan fort, which is located around 40km from Ganpatipule. n Getting there: You can head here either by road or by train. Driving down is convenient, but will take a long time because Ganpatipule is not easily accessible by a national highway — the 330km journey will take you 7-8 hours. Going by train, on the other hand, will take you around 45 hours up to Ratnagiri, from where you can arrange a taxi to cover the remaining 25km to Ganpatipule.

Saputara is known for being a planned hill station, which basically means that you can expect a plethora of hotels, swimming pools, theatres, parks and museums. This hill station is a great place to escape to for scenic views and lush green surroundings, without giving up on the comfort of urban amenities. n Getting there: A drive on National Highway No.3 will take around 4 hours till Saputara. TOP VIEW

Investors are viewing India as a country where there is, after 30 years, a government which has an absolute majority, a government which is led by a Prime Minister who is decisive. They see it as a government which is reform oriented and therefore its a right place to invest in... I think India is back in the reckoning and hopefully we are able to move expeditiously on track that we are moving so that this sentiment converts itself into investments and converts itself into resources for the economy .

CEOs and CFOs are confident in the potential to grow their business in the next five years, with an average anticipated rise in turnover of 54%, reveals a Standard Chartered survey By A Business Reporter

M

id-sized companies in Asia are highly confident in their ability to grow, and alongside domestic expansion are increasingly looking to international markets to build further momentum, finds a new independent study commissioned by Standard Chartered. The survey of 300 CEOs and CFOs of companies with an annual turnover of between USD30USD100 million across four Asian markets – China, India, Indonesia and Malaysia – points to considerable optimism, despite slowing economies across the region. According to the survey, 97% of the CEOs and CFOs of Indian businesses are confident in the potential

to grow their business in the next five years, with an average anticipated rise in turnover of 54%. Confidence comes from increasing demand for products and services, much of this driven by a growing middle class. While overwhelmingly high, levels of optimism vary. Indian business leaders are the most optimistic, while Malaysian respondents have slightly more mixed views, with 78% confident in their growth prospects. The findings are good news for India’s economy, as the companies here look to expand their workforce to meet increased demand for the products and services they provide. Eight in ten of the businesses who plan to grow also expect to take on more workers in the next five years, with headcount expected to increase by an average of one-third. 85% of the Indian companies are international, typically doing business with Europe, Middle East and China. Expanding internationally is a priority for most of the Indian mid-sized companies in the study, with 73% planning to increase their sales in existing foreign markets, and 71% expecting to expand the number of international markets in which they operate. ASEAN is the most popular for-

eign market for business for Indonesia and Malaysia, with 74% of the Indonesian and 76% of the Malaysian companies currently doing business in other ASEAN markets. In India and China, companies also look to Europe as a key trading partner, with as many as 68% of Indian companies and 54% of Chinese companies considering Europe as their preferred foreign market. The CEOs and CFOs cite becoming leaders in their respective industries as their top priority. Quality and consistency are also front of mind, as the companies plan to increase the scale of their operations while continuing to provide the quality of their products and services. Commenting on the survey, Manish Jain, MD & Regional Head, Commercial Clients, South Asia at Standard Chartered, says “Mid-sized companies are crucial engines of economic growth and job creation across Asia, and increasingly active in global trade. They are the Tatas and Alibabas of tomorrow, and this study shows that slowing growth in the region has not dented their confidence in the future. Far from it, these dynamic companies are looking to take on more workers and expand into new markets, growing their turnover in the next five years.

Long Weekend Holiday Syndrome

Packed Bags, But Nowhere To Go By Mayura Shanbaug

W

hen 38 years old Rajveer Singh decided to book a quick get away resort for his family for the long weekend holiday on account of Republic day on Monday, he was in for a shock. Almost all the resorts and holiday homes in and around Mumbai and Pune were fully booked. “I did not get bookings in any of the hotels or resorts in Konkan or Goa or even Matheran, he said. Many people had to abort their plans as even the bus and train reservations were not available. Singh has finally decided to spend the days visiting nearby malls and fun activities for his wife and kids. This is not the only example. The Shah's, the Khan's, the D'souza's, the Iyer's and the Khanna's are amongst the many thousands of Mumbaikars who find themselves in a similar predicament. They had packed their bags, but have no where to go. Incidentally, a look at the calender reveals many three-day and four-day weekends spread out through the year. This Republic Day weekend is among the first of the many long weekends that working people are going to enjoy this year. For those working five days a week, there are seven threeday weekends in the year with key holidays and festivals occurring at the beginning or end of the week, including Republic Day, Holi, Good Friday, Maharashtra Day, Gandhi Jayanti, Bhaubeej and Christmas. According to Amish Shirgaonkar, Proprietor, Shivanjali Holiday Homes in Alibaug, the resort is fully booked for this weekend. “People have booked the resort as far back as a month ago... The Christmas and New Year festivities were just getting over but thanks to this long weekend ,we are back to doing good business , he said.

However, even if you can afford it, you can't go...The jet setting lot of the country have also planned their holidays with destinations like Goa, Pondicherry, Jaipur being the top destinations, but are ruing the ticket rush.. According to Samyukth Sridharan, President & COO, Cleartrip, travel for 2015's first long weekend looks like a big success...Enthusiasm over 2015’s first long weekend seems to have set in. This time, keen holiday planners were already exploring interesting and offbeat destinations for the Republic Day weekend, said Sridharan. Naturally, than the late deciders have been left behind. “We are seeing places like Pondicherry, Puri and Gangtok debut amongst the Top 10 destinations that Indians are visiting this January. Though, cities like Goa and Jaipur continue to be amongst the favourites, he said. As per Sridharan, advance purchase for this weekend had spiraled too. “At Cleartrip, over 82% people booked their travel for the Republic Day Long Weekend, over 30-days in advance, added Sridharan. “With Seven long weekends in the calender, future looks promising for us, he concluded. So be it for the hoteliers and travel agents. But for the common you and me, either we stay at home or plan early before the next long weekend sets in.

Faisal Khan makes his comeback By Sandeep Hattangadi

lthough Faisal Khan is the younger brother (‘bhaijaan’) of superstar Aamir Khan, his career didn’t make headway inspite of good films like ‘Madhosh’ and ‘Mela’. But now he is staging a comeback with the movie ‘Chinar—Daastaan-EIshq', based on the novel 'Jheel Jalti Hai' by famous writer Khwaja Farooq Ranzu Shah. Set in a pre-terrorism Kashmir, this is a love story. Other than Faisal Khan who is returning after nine years, the other actors include Dilip Tahil, Shahbaz Khan and others on the set. In the movie, the character played by Dilip Tahil is forcefully marrying off his daughter to a rich man, when hero Faisal Khan unites the bride with his poor friend and her lover at gun point. Shahbaz Khan plays the character of a renowned person who attends the wedding. “I am playing the character of a jilted lover. In the movie, I unite my poor friend with a rich girl who loves each other, but her father tries to forcefully marry her to a rich person,” discloses Faisal Khan. About his comeback, Faisal Khan said, “I want to do good roles. I liked this story and hence I decided to do

arts, his production banner, will be launching three more films this year. One of them will be 'Ishq De Maare', which will star Dharmendra, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. A tale of bonded family of a father and two sons. Subhash Ghai, whose two '80s hits 'Ram Lakhan' and 'Hero' are set to be remade, says while redoing a film one should make sure that it will be relevant with time. 'Ram Lakhan' will be remade by Karan Johar and Ghai while superstar Salman Khan is remaking 'Hero'. “What happens generally is when a filmmaker does a remake, sometimes they are not able to justify it. Remakes should be significant with time and if its essence is not lost then they are always appreciated by the audience,” Ghai said at a recent press conference. The 69-year-old director said films are not about entertainment only. “Films are not only for entertainment. They plays an important role in bringing out several social issues. Films should be made to depict the culture and tradition of our country,” he said. Ghai introduced a lot of fresh talent and groomed them, making their journey to stardom easier. That’s probably the reason Subhash Ghai set up Whistling Woods in 2006, an international quality film and television training institute. Sharing his thoughts Subhash Ghai insists that “we must share our knowledge and experience with the younger generation of filmmakers and keep learning from contemporary cinema to keep pace with time and values”. The grandeur of Ghai’s endeavour and the delight he took in extravagant storytelling, has rightly earned Subhash Ghai the sobriquet ‘Showman.’

aveena (40) was slated to play a jazz singer in the film, which stars Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and will also mark the acting debut of director Karan Johar. "I am no longer a part of 'Bombay Velvet'. Eveything has changed. The whole scenario of movie has changed now. I had finished shooting my part too but there were a lot of changes in the sequences... So, I told Anurag that I will not do this film. I will work with him in his next project," Raveena told PTI. The actress said she is not angry

with Anurag, whom she had worked in crime drama 'Shool'. "Anurag and I are very good friends and such issues don't matter in our friendship," she said. 'Bombay Velvet' is an adaptation of Gyan Prakash's book 'Mumbai Fables' and narrates the story of how the city became a metropolis against the backdrop of love, greed, violence and jazz music. PTI

Without your (Ilaiyaraaja) music I don't think I could have come this far. It's been 15 years now and every day is full of your music. Every shot is full of your music. I draw my emotions from your music. Thank you Raaja sir for everything,” Bachchan said. “We all heard about his music and legendary fan following...we have all heard how his name sold movies. We all heard his name is close to the God in the world of music. We all are here to pay tribute to the divine musician of cinema,” Bachchan added. When Bachchan asked Rajinikanth about his experiences of working with the legendary composer, the 'Lingaa' star

shared, “I know Raaja sir from the early '70s. He was very naughty and mischievous person. We both used to gossip and used to have our drinks together till morning. “And suddenly, I saw a transformation in Raaja sir. And then I started calling him Raaja swami. He is a saint now and mata Saraswati lives in him.” Haasan, who has worked with Ilaiyaraaja in several films, said, “Out of his 1,000 films, 10 per cent are mine. He created the songs but we own it. After the transformation I started calling him my brother. And today after 40 years for the first time I hugged him. I knew that he would have reached 1,000 one day.” Refuting the rumours of 'Shamitabh' being the 1,000th music composition of the 71-year-old musician, Balki said, “Let me clarify one thing, 'Shamitabh' is not Ilaiyaraaja's 1,000th film. He will reach the milestone with Bala's upcoming Tamil film 'Tharai Thappattai'. We are here to celebrate that... 1,000 is just a number. We don't need any excuse to celebrate Raaja sir.”

Glad I said yes to ‘Khamoshiyan’: Ali Fazal B

reaking away from his boy-next-door image Ali Fazal will be seen in the role of a brooding lover in his upcoming 'Khamoshiyan' and the actor says he is happy to have accepted the film as he feels it has come to him at the right time. The 28-year-old actor will be delving into the thriller genre with this Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt-produced movie. “It is a different role for me. Yes, it is not the boy-next-door that I have done so far. I play a lover, a drunkard writer, who is on the edge of exploding. The entire story is from his eyes. I didn't make any effort to do a different kind of film. I didn't give much thought to it. The role came my

way. I didn't think I wanted to do this kind of film. I was shooting for 'Bobby Jasoos' when I was offered 'Khamoshiyan'. The director (Karan Darra) narrated the entire script over the phone and from that day to today there has been no looking back,” Fazal said. Besides role reversal on-screen, the actor has undergone a personality change thanks to producer Mahesh Bhatt, who is also the presenter of the film. “Mahesh Bhatt has changed me a lot. I used to be very held back with my words. He has made me open up. He has taught me how to say what comes to my mind, just as he does. I have in a way become much more upfront and I like the new side of me,” he said, adding that the filmmaker was a great mentor on sets. 'Khamoshiyan'

What battery is to a cellphone, singing is to Babul Supriyo By Chaitanya Padukone

E

ven as a galaxy of star-singers, like Madhushree, Jaspinder Narula, Sudesh Bhosle, and Javed Ali had convened to perform ‘live’ for the Zee Classic ‘RD NightPanchamMagic’ at the retro-repertoire concert event, it was exuberant singerturned-Union Minister of State Babul Supriyo who appeared fully charged-up to unplug his vocal ‘showmanship’. Refuting rumours that he had given up singing after being inducted into active politics, Babul seemed peeved as he responded. “It's true that I am preoccupied with my political commitments. In fact tomorrow I am part of a high-level presentation in the presence of Prime Minister Modi-saab. Simultaneously I am also ‘balancing’ my passion for music and singing. Shortly I am scheduled to record two Bengali songs in a studio along with movie-star MP Hema Malini who will also sing with me. Whenever Bollywood music

needs me, I am game, as long as I also get to fulfill my socio-political priorities. What a charged battery is to a cell-phone, singing is to me – It gives me the enlightening energy,” enthuses seasoned singersamaritan Minister Babul Supriyo whose Bollywood playback assignments seem to have dwindled. With a mock frown and chuckle he reacts, “Thanks to hi-tech computerised audio-aids, it’s now possible in Bollywood for even non-singers to record a chartbuster and even win awards. Consequently the indispensability of good competent singers, has taken a beating. It’s unfortunate that there seems to be an inverse proportion – the better one sings, the lesser work he gets. Maybe its bad luck, that when my two ‘duets’ won prestigious awards, only the female singer was honoured. And playing shrewd-politics in Bollywood is simply not my cup of tea,” shrugs the outspoken Supriyo.

also stars TV actor Gurmeet Choudhary and Sapna Pabbi and will hit theatres on January 30. Fazal said that contrary to the general notion, the film is not an erotic-horror movie but a love story weaved into a deep, psychological thriller. “The rumour is that the film is an erotic horror, it is not that at all. It is a love story. We have not used any gimmicks, no jarring sounds. It is a psychological thriller,” he said. Fazal will also be seen in Hollywood film 'Furious 7', which is the seventh installment from the 'Fast and Furious' franchise. The actor has already started promoting the movie in India, which is heading to theatres on April 10. “I participated in a drag race in Aamby Valley City to promote the film. There will be other activities in which I will take part. But the team is keeping it low-key in honour of actor Paul Walker (who died in 2013 in a car crash),” Fazal said.

Byomkesh not traditional Bollywood hero: Dibakar

I

n 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!', lead actor Sushant Singh Rajput will be seen donning dhotis and a moustached look, which director Dibakar Banerjee says was a risk that he took to break away from traditional Bollywood hero image. The crime thriller is based on the fictional detective Byomkesh Bakshi, a character created by the Bengali writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay in 1932. "Bollywood has a tradition of seeing young men in a certain way. The cool quotient of this guy is that he is very ordinary. He is a not a fashionable person. So, we took a huge but calculated risk and pushed Byomkesh's look and styling which Hindi film audience has never seen. "Yet the feel of the film is very contemporary, I really hope it catches on," Dibakar said during the trailer launch of the film here last night. Set in Kolkata of 1940s, the film shows a young Byomkesh embarking on his first case while the metropolis is in the grip of World War II. The director said that the global conflict has an important role in the movie. "During the World War II, the nature of crime changed in Kolkata. There were air raids and there were Japanese spies as well. And that point, Kolkata was a port city so there were naturally more crimes. In this scenario, a young detective Byomkesh Bakshy came to solve a mystery - his first case," he said. Dibakar has been working on the film for last four years and he said after spending several sleepless nights, he is glad to see that the love of his labour has come out good.

APEX COURT OBSERVATIONS

N

EW DELHI: In a setback to N Srinivasan, the Supreme Court barred him from contesting any BCCI election on grounds of conflict of interest and set up a judges committee under a former Chief Justice of India to decide on the punishment in the IPL scam that can threaten the future of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR). Delivering its long-awaited verdict, the court held that the allegation of betting against Gurunath Meiyappan, a CSK team official and son in law of the BCCI President-in-exile and Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra stands proved while the charge of cover up against Srinivasan "is not proved". Striking down rules that permitted BCCI office bearers to have a commercial interest by owning teams in the hugely-popular Indian Premier League and Champions League, a two-member bench of Justices T S Thakur and F M I Khalifulla, said, "Amendment in the BCCI rules allowing Srinivasan to own IPL team is bad as conflict of interest in cricket leads to great confusion." "No one who has commercial interest including N Srinivasan shall be eligible for any post in the BCCI and this disqualification on ground of commercial interest shall continue till such commercial interest will exist," the bench said while asking BCCI to hold its AGM for electing office bearers within six weeks. Reading out from the judgement, Justice Thakur said the "allegation of cover up" in the probe of IPL spot fixing and betting against Srinivasan over the involvement of Meiyappan are "not proved" and "at best there's only a case of suspicion against Srinivasan of cover up" It said not only players and

All cricket matches must be played on level playing field. What goes in the name of game is farce and the game is a game only if it is pristine and free from any sporting fraud. There is need to establish institutional integrity within BCCI.

team officials but "franchisees will also be punished for misconduct". The future of CSK and IPL could be in danger as IPL rules provide for cancellation of the franchise for misconduct by players, owners and officials of a team. Setting up a committee of judges headed by former CJI R M Lodha, the bench said "to remove bias" and to have a process which will be "objective and transparent" there was a need for an independent committee to decide the

quantum of punishment likely to be awarded to Meiyappan and Kundra and to decide the fate of the teams. The committee, also comprising Justices Ashok Bhan and R V Raveendran, both retired judges of the apex court, will further probe the allegation of betting against BCCI chief operating officer Sunder Raman and if found guilty will award the punishment. SC verdict will impact all sports bodies: Mudgal

NEW DELHI: Welcoming the Supreme Court verdict barring N Srinivasan from contesting any BCCI election on grounds of conflict of interest, head of IPL-6 spotfixing and betting probe committee Justice Mukul Mudgal said that it will have far reaching ramifications as it will also impact on all sports bodies. Delivering its long-awaited verdict, the court today held that the allegation of betting against Gurunath Meiyappan, a CSK team official and son-in-law of the BCCI President-in-exile and Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra stands proved while the charge of cover up

against Srinivasan "is not proved". The SC also set up a judges committee under a former Chief Justice of India to decide on the punishment in the IPL scam that can threaten the future of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. Justice Mudgal, head of the apex court-appointed three-member committee, said the SC decision will also apply to all sports bodies. "The judgment is a major advancement in public law. Being the SC verdict, it affects all sports bodies in the country. Conflict of interest arises not only in sports but also in all public

bodies," he said "Justices T S Thakur and F M I Kalifulla who have given the verdict deserve compliments from the entire legal and sports fraternity. It will lead to more accountability. An apex court judgment is binding on the entire country. We have to accept it," he added. "It advances public law, administration of sports body and its fairness and also establishes the principle of conflict of interest which is present in every facet of life and this judgment will have far reaching consequences and ramifications," Justice Mudgal said.

GUILTY AS CHARGED... Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra and Gurunath Meiyappan, a CSK team official and son in law of the BCCI President-in-exile N. Srinivasan were found guilty of betting. Meiyappan, Kundra and others, complete its work in six months and place a report before it. Further the panel will make recommendations for bringing out reforms in the BCCI. The apex court said the amendment 6.2.4 brought in the BCCI rules in February 2008 to permit cricket administrators of having commercial interest by owing teams for IPL and Champions League was "unsustainable", impermissible" and bad in law and has to be struck down as it is void. It said Srinivasan being BCCI chief and as Managing Director of India Cements Ltd, which owned the Chennai Super Kings created a situation of conflict of interest. The contention that Srinivasan held a Small share in India Cements Limited, owners of CSK, was misleading since his family directly or in-

directly holds much more control in the company. The bench said the amendment to BCCI rules permitting an administrator to have commercial interest in the game was in "breach of duty" and coming in the way of "purity of the game". "The amendment 6.2.4 is a true villain of the situation," the bench said and added that while appointing the panel to probe the IPL scandal the BCCI did not adhere to prescribed procedures". While pronouncing the verdict, the bench said it has framed seven questions on issues like whether BCCI was a "State" or not. The court held that though the BCCI is not a "State" inthe constitutional framework, BCCI's functions are "public functions" and as such it is Continued on pg 30 «

NEW DELHI: Claiming to have been vindicated after the Supreme Court barred N Srinivsan from contesting BCCI Presidential elections owing to conflict of interest, sacked IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi said the verdict will clean up corruption in the game. "Extremely happy with the Hon. Supreme Court judgement on #srinivasan ..Always believed that I would be vindicated #IPLVerdict," Modi said in a series of tweets after the apex court disallowed Srinivasan from fighting the BCCI Presidential election due to his stake in IPL team Chennai Super Kings. "Decision by Hon. SC to disallow any administrator from having any commercial interest in cricket is bang on #IPLVerdict #SriniGameOver," he added. Delivering its longawaited verdict, the Supreme Court held that the allegation of betting against Gurunath Meiyappan, a CSK team official and son-in-law of the BCCI President-inexile, and Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra stands proved while the charge of cover up against Srinivasan "is not proved". HENNAI: Tamil Nadu are set for another facile victory as 40time Ranji Trophy Champions Mumbai's chances of knock-out qualifications is likely to end with another shoddy performance in a group league cricket match. After bowling out Mumbai for a paltry 141 in the first innings, Tamil Nadu posted a healthy 417 in their first innings with help of Baba Indrajith's maiden first-class ton in his 10th match. Indrajith coming in at No 8 scored 101 off 162 balls with the help of 11 boundaries and a six as Tamil Nadu gained a mammoth 276 runs first innings lead. At stumps, Mumbai were 12 for one needing another 264 runs to avoid innings defeat with two days to fight it out on a track which certainly improved after the first day when left-arm spinner Rahil Shah ended with career-best figures of 7 for 34. writ jurisdiction of the High Court under Article 226 of the Constitution. Accepting the findings of the three-member committee headed Justice Mukul Mudgal, which probed the IPL-6 spot fixing and betting scandal, the bench said "it has no reason to differ with the findings of the court-appointed committee that Meiyappan and Kundra were team officials indulging in betting". The bench said though both state governments and union government gave full autonomy to the BCCI which selects the national team and have complete sway over the game of cricket, "it (State) chose not to bring law to challenge the powers of cricket board". To explain how the Board performed public functions, the apex court gave the example of how civilian awards like Bharat Ratna,

Padma Vibhushan, Padma Shri and also Arujna awards were given on the recommendation of the BCCI and players who bring laurels to the country are felicitated by the highest dignitaries. It brushed aside the contention of Kundra that he was not issued notice by the Mudgal Committee saying that he was heard by the panel. So "issue of notice is of little consequence" as the committee followed all rules and proved all charges against him requiring no review if its findings. The bench also said that BCCI cannot afford to lose its credibility because of sporting frauds and "all cricket matches must be played on level playing field". "What goes in the name of game is farce and the game is a game only if it is pristine and free from any sporting fraud," the bench observed. "There is need to establish institutional integrity within BCCI," the bench said.

It’s time BCCI is brought under RTI: Bedi

NEW DELHI: "Deeply hurt" by Supreme Court's intervention in deciding the fate of BCCI president-inexile N Srinivasan, former India captain Bishen Singh Bedi today said it is time the "cricket board is brought under the RTI ambit". In a setback to Srinivasan, the Apex Court today barred him from contesting any BCCI election on grounds of conflict of

interest but Bedi believes that the verdict is not a moment to rejoice but a day of sadness for Indian cricket."It's not a moment to rejoice. There is nothing to be happy about the judgment, rather I am deeply saddened by the turn of events. Not for anybody but for the game that I have loved and lived all through. This is the tragedy of Indian cricket.”

Don’t sell your products using Dhoni’s name: HC to Maxx N

EW DELHI: Delhi High Court asked the manufacturer of Maxx Mobile to refrain from selling any product which contained or showed the endorsement of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the captain of the Indian national cricket team. Justice S Muralidhar said the November 17, 2014 interim order restraining Maxx from using Dhoni's name would remain in force till an Arbitral Tribunal was set up to resolve the dispute between them. The order was passed after Dhoni's counsel Gaurav Mitra and Pratik Malik informed the court that the company was still selling products using the cricketer's name, which clearly violated its previous order and amounted to contempt. To this, the judge asked the counsel for the cricketer to move an appropriate application in that regard. "In violation of November 17, 2014 order the petitioners (Dhoni and Rhiti Sports) can take an appropriate action. They can even file a contempt case against the manufacturer," the court said, while disposing of the petition. The court was hearing a plea filed by Dhoni and Rhiti Sports who have alleged that Maxx Mobilink Private Ltd has not paid dues of over Rs 10 crore which was agreed upon for using the cricketer's name on their products. Dhoni has also claimed that the endorsement agreement between him and the company has expired in December 2012 but Maxx was still using his name to sell its

products and also not paying the dues. The High Court in November last year had said that the respondent should refrain from selling any products "which use or claim to have been endorsed by Dhoni or in any other manner suggest that the cricketer is associated with the respondent (Maxx)." Later in the day, Dhoni's counsel in a statement said, "We shall now very soon file an appropriate application before the court to take cognizance of such contemptuous acts of the respondent company and shall seek sternest possible punishment for them".

It’s Srini’s call to decide on his future: BCCI on SC ruling N

EW DELHI: The BCCI top brass remained tightlipped about the Board's future course of action after the Supreme Court's barred its sidelined President N Srinivasan from contesting any election on grounds of conflict of interest. Srinivasan's company India Cements owns IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings and the Tamil Nadu strongman might now have to relinquish his stake and ownership in the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led popular franchise if he wants to retain his position of power as the president of BCCI. While Srinivasan refused to speak to waiting mediapersons outside his house in Chennai, the other top BCCI officials also didn't make any comments on the Supreme Court's verdict. However, the BCCI officials were quick to point out that "it will entirely be Srinivasan's call on his future" as he will have to choose between BCCI and his franchise. "Srinivasan will certainly

Bouchard dumbfounded by ‘give us a twirl’ request

Serena Williams makes a backhand return to Vera Zvonareva of Russia during their second round match at the Australian Open tennis championship in Melbourne. JAPAN'S NISHIKORI WARMING TO TASK IN MELBOURNE Japan's Kei Nishikori says he's closing in on his best form after being pushed to four sets to put away Croatia's Ivan Dodig and reach the third round at the Australian Open on Thursday. Fifth seed Nishikori, who is knocking on the door for a Grand Slam title after losing to Marin Cilic in the final of last year's US Open, won 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, 7-6 (7/0) and will now play American Steve Johnson. "I think I'm getting close. Maybe these couple of matches I didn't play 100 percent, but I'm still winning good three and four sets. I

EXICO CITY: Formula One team Force India's drivers Germany's Nico Hulkenberg and Mexican Sergio Perez pulled back the covers on the car they hope will bring them success in the 2016 season today. The duo revealed the new model in a museum in Mexico City, which belongs to Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim who is Perez' sponsor. Force India's billionaire Indian owner Vijay Mallya was especially proud of the new livery on the car which is brand new, a combination of silver and black with the team's traditional colour of orange streaking from the nose cone to the rear of the car in two symmetrical curves. MELBOURNE: Eugenie Bouchard has become used to close scrutiny as she has risen through the ranks but was dumbfounded when a courtside interviewer demanded "give us a twirl" at the Australian Open. Most on-court interviews deal with the match and form before getting into some lighter questions, but with Bouchard it was more about what she was wearing. "Can you give us a twirl and tell us about your outfit?" asked Channel Seven's male on-court interviewer after her second round clash late Wednesday. Earlier, Serena Williams had unveiled a new backless playing dress which she said was designed to send a message about female empowerment. She too had been asked to do a twirl, and reluctantly obliged. "A twirl?" replied Bouchard, a 20-year-old

which makes the car appear more sleek and aggressive and I'm sure it's something that will appeal to the fans as well," purred Mallya. "Our traditional team colours remain integrated in the livery, but we've given it a very modern twist." With regard to the shape of the car there has been a lowering at the front of the car of the chassis and the nose. "The front of the car looks very different from what we had developed previously," said Technical Director Andrew Green. "It is a redesign that involved a lot of work over the winter, as the new regulations caused a loss in terms of downforce and we've been working to claw back all that performance."

think it's getting there," Nishikori said after his latest win. "I'm playing good. For sure this match will help for my next match. Trying to be 100 percent little by little." Nishikori had a solid 2hr 47min workout on the hottest day of the tournament so far, but said he was looking forward to stepping up his campaign in his next outing against Johnson. "It was different than the first day. It was much warmer. Hot out there. It wasn't easy," he said. "Especially in the third and fourth sets, I was a little bit dizzy and tired. But it's going to be like this in Australia, so I think I was ready for it.

BOPANNA-NESTOR ADVANCE, BHUPATHIMELZER TEAM CRASH OUT Rohan Bopanna and Daniel Nestor were tested before making it to the second round even as Mahesh Bhupathi and his partner Jurgen Melzer crashed out of men's doubles event of the Australian Open. Bopanna and Canada's Nestor, seeded seventh, fought off a spirited chal-

Wimbledon runner-up, to which the interviewer responded, "A twirl, a pirouette, here we go." Bouchard did as requested but later in her post-match media conference said it had been "very unexpected". "I mean, yeah, I don't know. An old guy asking you to twirl, it was funny," she said. Tennis fans on social media users were not impressed either. One Twitter user asked: "Would men be asked this question?" while another said: "Wish she'd hit him w/ her racket." The issue also generated dozens of comments among online editions of Australian newspapers, although not everyone saw it as a problem. "So you have missed the last 3-4 years where they've asked blokes Nadal in particular - about his fashion choices, right?," said one comment. lenge from Marcos Baghdatis and Marinko Matosevic 7-6 (2) 7-5 in their opening round in one hour and 46 minutes. There was not much to differentiate between the two teams as they hit an equal number of aces (10) and committed same number of double faults (5). Bopanna and Nestor won 87 points, only eight more than their rivals.

ELBOURNE: Serena Williams was slow to get going before finding her groove to bulldoze Vera Zvonareva and join rampant fellow world number one Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open third round Thursday. With the temperatures again sizzling around 33 Celsius (93 Fahrenheit) at Melbourne Park, the American 18-time Grand Slam champion took time to adjust to the hot and humid conditions against the Russian veteran. She had to save two set points before exploding into action in the second set to easily win 7-5, 6-0 and keep alive her dream of a sixth Australian title. Djokovic, gunning to be crowned champion a fifth time, was on fire in his showdown against Andrey Kuznetsov, crushing the hapless Russian 6-0, 6-1, 6-4, while defending champion Stan Wawrinka had to work hard to get past Marius Copil. The Romanian took the fourth seed to two tiebreakers before the Swiss star triumphed 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (7/4), 6-3. Japan Kei Nishikori also went through. Williams said she only started finding her range when she relaxed. "She started out really well, she was really aggressive and I was a little too passive," said Williams, the top seed. "Once I got down I thought 'Serena, you've done so well here you've got nothing to lose, just have fun and enjoy yourself' -- then I started to play a lot better."

HUBANESHWAR: Hosts Kalinga Lancers started this year's Hero Hockey India League with a bang by defeating newcomers Ranchi Rays 63 in a high-scoring inaugural match of the third edition of the tournament in front of a capacity crowd at Kalinga Stadium here today. The best part about Lancers' display today was that they scored five goals through field efforts while one came from penalty corner. They had finished last in their debut season last year. Lucas Villa (3rd minute), Ryan Archibald (17th), skipper Vikram Kanth (18th), Gurjinder Singh (37th), Mandeep Antil (58th) and Mohd Amir Khan (60th) were the goal scorers for the winners. For Ranchi Rays, captain Ashley Jackson (36th, 50th) converted two penalty corners and Barry Middleton (14th) scored the other from a field effort. Under new coach Jude Felix, the Lancers looked more organised and started on a positive note with some impressive runs into the rival citadel. Egged on by a vociferous home crowd, the Lancers took the lead in the third minute through Villa, who scored with a nice lob over

Ranchi custodian Lovell Tyler's head from a counterattack. The Lancers continued to attack after surging ahead and in the process earned three penalty corners in succession, two of which was wasted by Argentine Gonzalo Peillat and the third was not stopped properly. The Rays played well in patches at least in the first two quarters but managed to draw level in the 14th minute when Englishman Barry Middleton scored with a reverse hit from a tight angle to end the opening quarter at 1-1 scoreline. The Lancers, however, restored their lead from the very first move after the resumption of play when Archibald found the back of the Rays' net with a reverse shot from the left corner of the goal. Captain Vikram Kanth scored again for the Lancers in the very next minute with a field goal to go into midway break with a comfortable 3-1 lead. But the Rays, who were shaky in the opening two quarters, came out with more purpose and looked far more threatening after the change of ends. The visitors went into the attack and managed to pull one back when Jackson perfectly converted a short corner in the 36th minute.
