MODI MAGIC IN JHARKHAND AND KASHMIR TOO PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti addressing mediapersons in Srinagar on Tuesday.

n America based NRI hardware engineer and his parents have allegedly thrown his wife out of the house just because their family guru told them that the woman is not 'suitable' for their family and will cause problems in future. The husband then refused to go near his wife and his parents began to torture her for dowry. The woman then lodged a FIR at the Kherwadi police station but the senior inspector, who is also a woman just filed the FIR but did not take any action. PDP's Mehbooba Mufti who had said, “A BJP man as Chief Minister of Kashmir is a curse”, has no choice but to go for coalition with that party. In Jharkhand, the BJP is all set to form government

S

RINAGAR/RANCHI: Jammu & Kashmir on Tuesday returned a highly-fractured verdict in which the People's Democratic Party (PDP) emerged the single largest party throwing up different possibilities in government formation while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stormed to power with an ally in Jharkhand giving it the first stable government. With 28 seats, the PDP was in a pole position to form the government but the party appeared to be keeping all options open like the BJP which has won 25 seats, all in the Jammu region, recording its best performance in the

state, reports PTI. The BJP's success in Jharkhand comes on top of its victory in Maharashtra and Haryana in the recent assembly elections after the stupendous victory in Lok Sabha polls. However, the BJP, for whom Prime Minister Narendra Modi carried out a high voltage campaign of 'Mission 44+' in the 87 member J&K Assembly, failed to make any breakthrough in the Valley and Ladakh where it drew a blank in 50 seats. In the Valley, the party suffered the ignominy of all but one of its 34 candidates losing their deposit. However, the party had more than dou-

bled its seats from 11 in 2008 to 25 now while the PDP went up from 21 to 28. The ruling National Conference (NC) suffered a defeat when it secured only 15 seats against 28 it had won in the last elections. Chief Minister and NC President Omar Abdullah lost from Sonawar seat but managed to cling on to Beerwah with a slender margin of 1,000 votes. Its partner in the government Congress slipped to the fourth position getting 12 seats against 17 it had. Jammu Kashmir People Conference headed by former separatist Sajjad Lone won two seats while JKPDF (secu-

lar) and CPI-M won one seat each. Independents won in three seats. As the picture became clear, BJP President Amit Shah said all three options were open for the party. "The option of forming the government, the option of supporting a government and the option of participating in a government are all open," Shah told reporters in Delhi. To further questions, he said it is for the media to guess what the BJP would do. The party's parliamentary board will meet on Wednesday to discuss the situation. Continued on pg 2 «

A

woman and her son have been intercepted by immigration authorities at Mumbai International airport on Monday night on suspicion that they could be relatives of fugitive gangster Ravi Pujari. According to police sources, the two, namely Sridevi Santosh Pujari and her son Aryan were intercepted as a Look out Circular (LOC) with same name as that of the woman was issued by Mangalore police in an extortion case registered in 2012. The LOC is usually opened to trace the absconding criminals. As per Mangalore police records, Ravi Pujari and his wife Sridevi Pujari are wanted in that case. Inci-

dentally, Pujari's son's name is also Aryan. "Immigration authorities in Mumbai intercepted the lady and her son saying that an LOC was issued against her. Subsequently, Mangalore police were alerted. The duo was scheduled to take a flight to Abu Dhabi on Monday night. Meanwhile, the immigration authorities have handed them over to the local Sahar Airport police as per procedure," said a police officer. Mangalore police have arrived here and are questioning the woman and her son to establish if she is the same woman they were looking for. However, Mumbai Police crime branch has claimed that Sridevi Pujari is not the wife of gangster Ravi Pujari and it was a

case of mistaken identity by the Mangalore police. The duo, detained by police here, are residents of Borivali and a retired Mumbai Police officer, who is their neighbour, also confirmed the woman and her son were in no way associated with gangster Pujari, said local police. According to Mumbai police records, Ravi Pujari's wife name is Padma, who had been arrested in a fake passport case in 2005. She was released on bail after a month, but she fled the country within six months by secretly making another passport, which is suspected to be in the name of Sridevi Santosh Pujari, in a bid to hoodwink security agencies.

Jharkhand, a state that was formed 14 years ago, got its first stable government with BJP winning in 37 seats in the 81-member Assembly. It ally AJSU has won five seats giving the alliance 42 seats, one more than the required majority of 41. The state, which has seen nine governments and three stints of President's rule in 14 years, gave a decisive mandate this time riding on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's development card. BJP's alliance partner AJSU suffered a jolt as its chief and former deputy chief minister Sudesh Mahto lost from his home turf Silli, which he had represented for 15 years. The ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha won 19 seats while its partner in government Congress won 6 seats.

Guru tells NRI to throw his ‘bad’ wife Continued from pg 1 « Rs 5,000) and asked the woman to go to her. Necessary action will be taken, the officer accordingly told her. The 26-year-old woman is currently in Mumbai staying at her relative’s residence, and is running from pillar to post seeking justice. She has studied M.Com and before marriage was based in Dhamtari, Chattisgarh. Talking to ADC she said, “Our marriage took place on July 13, 2013; it was an arranged marriage. My husband (30) is a hardware engineer and is based in US since the past several years. As dowry we had given valuables of more than Rs 30 lakh. After marriage I came to my husband’s home in Kherwadi, Bandra. In November, after I put lot of pressure, I was sent to the US, to my husband.” She added, “At US, my husband's behaviour completely changed. He even refused to have physical relationship with me.” The husband forced the woman to have unnatural sex. After lot of torture she came back to India after few months. She said, “Back in Mumbai, my torture did not end; my fatherin-law, on pretext of giving blessing used to touch me inappropriately. Whenever my mother-in-law was out, he used to touch me for some reason or the other. The harassment did not end here; I was harassed to bring more money.” Meanwhile, the mother-in-law came to know that there is a 'baba' in Vasai. He brainwashed the family and told them that the woman was not good for the family. She said, “The 'baba' told them that I should be thrown out

of the house. He said my husband should marry another woman, after which the family will become rich.” Finally, with no option left, on November 23 the woman along with her family members approached Kherwadi police station, but cops refused to take action. In such a sensitive case, senior police inspector Rekha Bhavre casually said, “I am aware of the matter, but the concerned investigating officer is different.” Meanwhile, the father-in-law who used to molest the woman said: ''The allegation which my daughter-in-law is making is baseless. My son is in America, he is expected to come within 10 days. We never harassed her and never demanded any dowry.”

‘THERE ARE TEARS IN OUR EYES WHEN CHILDREN ARE FORCIBLY THRUST IN A RUTHLESS WORLD’

T

oday evening (December 24), His Eminence Oswald Cardinal Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay will officiate at his ninth midnight mass as head of the Archdiocese of Bombay whose centre is the Cathedral of the Holy Name, locally known as Wodehouse Church in Colaba. It is also the Cardinal’s 69th birthday, so both the day and night are special. Back in 1997, journalist Jonathan Kwitny published a biography of Pope John Paul II called “Man of the Century.” The idea was that the biography of John Paul II cut across all the great dramas of the 20th century, from Nazism and Communism to the upheaval in the Catholic Church caused by the Second Vatican Council. By the same logic, one could say that Cardinal Gracias is churchman of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, because there’s almost no story in which he isn’t a lead actor. Cardinal Gracias is playing a key role in pushing through a reform of Catholic worship in the English language, adopting translations closer and more reverent to the traditional style. Essentially a Mumbaikar, Cardinal Gracias grew up in Mahim and finished his seminary studies in Goregaon. But for brief stints in Jamshedpur, Agra and Rome he has served most of his time in churches in Mumbai and was ordained as a Bishop at

St Michael’s Church in Mahim in 1990. In 2006 he took over from Cardinal Ivan Dias as Archbishop of Bombay. Asked what this year’s midnight mass sermon will focus on, he replies, it will be about family values. “This Christmas I want that Christ should be born in every Christian house. This year particularly is dedicated to all the families and their thoughts. Christmas is a season for rejoicing and welcoming with love the Christ-Child. But there are tears in our eyes when we think of children who are deprived of their childhood and forcibly thrust into a ruthless world which has neither the time nor space for the innocence of children. I pray that Christ the son of God is born in our hearts,” Cardinal says. Cardinal Gracias serves as the Second Vice-Chairman of Vox Clara, the group appointed by the Vatican to oversee the recent English translation of the liturgy. Why was the need felt to alter the translation of the liturgy, we asked. “Pope noticed about the misinterpretation of the liturgy and so a group was formed to dis-

Tall, erect and erudite, His Eminence Cardinal Oswald Gracias took time out from a busy pre-Christmas schedule at the conference room at the Eucharistic Congress building next to Holy Name Cathedral (Cardinal has shifted his office here, away from his table laden with piles of papers, files and books as the entire building of his office is getting repaired). cuss and make suggestions to alter the liturgy as there was a worry about a bad translation leading to misunderstanding and dogmatic error 50, 100 years from now. So there has to be a balance. Now, we have made the changes and priests are also satisfied with it.” Cardinal Gracias, is also the President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India and elected FABC Secretary General by the Presidents of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences. “The FABC is an apex body representing 19 Bishop’s Conferences comprising 28 of their Asian member countries like the other Bishops’ Conferences of South America, Europe, Africa and Oceania. The Federation coordinates the work of the Church in these countries and represents Asia before the Vatican and Government authorities. The Central Secretariat is located in Hong Kong and is the principal service agency of FABC, and an instrument of co-ordination both within FABC and with outside offices and agencies in countries all through Asia,” Cardinal said. Mumbai city has a very vibrant Christian community, so does the country for that matter, and he talks about how happy he is that the churches are not dormant, but contributing to society. Especially in the field of education and health facilities, he says. “We are focussed mainly on rural India, and social awareness where the concentration is not just on charity but empowering people to use their basic rights, shifting from a needs base to a rights base and so bringing dignity into many underprivileged lives,” Cardinal said. Also concerned with ecology, the Cardinal points out that as good householders we should not exhaust the earth’s resources given to us as gifts but preserve our environment for our children and grandchildren. “That is our responsibility for future generations,” he emphasizes. But the pressing challenge at this time, is for more Christians to “enter civil society in larger numbers; the bureaucracy, in the political field and in positions of leadership in public service,” the Cardinal affirmed. At 69, Gracias had a scare with cancer five years ago, and is visibly thinner than he was before the illness. Today, however, he is said to be cancer-free, and maintains a challenging work and travel schedule. “It was just prayer that worked for me during my time of being affected with cancer. Even the Pope prayed for me. That’s why God heard their prayers and extended my life here so that I can serve him more in this earth,” Cardinal Gracias concluded and with his Christmas blessings, we left this charming, most approachable man of God with an affability that puts you at ease in his presence, eminent that is and will be in the future.

WHERE DID ALL THE PARAPHERNALIA COME FROM? The festival of Christmas has all these curious traditions which when questioned sound something like this – where did the Christmas tree and Santa Clause come from? What about Rudolf the rednosed reindeer? How do we know that Jesus was born on December 25? Natasha Rego scrimmages through the internet to bring you some forgotten tales that don’t quite answer these questions, but will make you wonder about them.

A

fter the death of Jesus, when Christianity was sprouting throughout Europe, many practices from contemporary religious rituals were adopted into the Christian culture because of the influence it had over the people. The church tried doing away with these celebrations, but the people would not relent. Since the early church couldn’t beat them, scholars say, it simply decided to join them.

CHRISTMAS LITERATURE

In the beginning

During the cold dark winter, when the days were short and the nights long, when the early Europeans had harvested their crops and slaughtered their animals in preparation for the season, there was enormous celebration taking place indoors. In the North country (now Germany), the people celebrated the Yuletide festivals honouring the god Odin (see picture). Fathers and sons would drag home an evergreen tree (spruce, pine or A 19th century fir), the only tree depiction of Odin. that braved the Looks familiar?

WINTER SOLSTICE

Winter solstice is an astronomical phenomenon which marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year. Winter solsticeoccurs for the Northern Hemisphere in December and for the Southern Hemisphere in June.

the centre of commerce and is where most of this story takes place. The new capitalist society gave rise to a burgeoning middle class, and so also to widespread poverty. This class inequality was most visible during Christmas when the people of money were seen obtaining their gifts, cooking hot meals and celebrating, while the lower classes would take to copious amounts of alcohol and lash out. What was once drunken merry-making with a little bit of foolhardiness, had now become riotous and uncontrollable.

winter. It symbolised the persistence of life and fertility in those cold times. They also dragged in the largest log they could find and set it on fire. For as long as it burned, usually 12 days, it was a time of over-indulging and merry-making in the biggest party of the year. At the same time in Rome, the mid-winter festivals were on their way. A week before the Winter Solstice, the Romans would begin celebrations of Saturnalia, a monthlong festival named after the god Saturn. It was a drunken, delirious time for the people. It was a time when masters and servants would switch social roles to celebrate. One of the festivals was Juvenilia, which celebrated the children. During the Winter Solstice which occurred for three days from December 22, the upper class Romans also celebrated, but in honour of a different god. On December 25, when the sun would rise again after three days at its lowest point, they observed the birth

of the sun god, Mithra. After Jesus’ death, the church was established and Christianity was spreading rampantly. It was a time when people recognised the death of a saint, not the birth, for death took the soul to heaven. So for a long time there, they didn’t pay attention to his birth. Some scholars say that biblical references suggest Jesus may have been born in a more favourable season than winter. After all, it was a time when the shepherds were watching their flock by night. The first Christmas as we know it today was observed on December 25, 336 AD, which inadvertently adopted many celebrations of the contemporary festivals of that time.

Fast forward to 19th century America

America had just got its independence from the British and an industrial revolution was sweeping the country. New York was

This was the time when Christmas literature captured the imagination of the people, especially the rich, and defined the spirit of Christmas for all the days to come. Three authors were instrumental in describing Christmas as we perceive it today – Washington Irving, Charles Dickens and Clement Clarke Moore. Irving’s biographer Andrew Scrooge meeting the ghosts of Burstein believes that his work Christmas. “profoundly influenced the American Christmas” by reinforcing the image of the Dutch patron saint, St. Nicolas, and the wintry celebrations of old Europe. His stories described a feast where the rich and the poor dined together as equals on Christmas day. “Within a decade of the publication of Irving's ‘Sketch Book’,” Burstein says, “New Yorkers were greeting each other with Christmas wishes, and stores on Broadway extended their hours to accommodate shoppers.” Dickens’ classic, the ‘Christmas Carol’, explored the miserly qualities of the rich through that raw old character Ebenezer Scrooge. The moral lesson from the story was widely received by the classes and transformed the spirit of Christmas. It went from a time of self-indulgence to a time of giving. Moore painted the perfect picture of Santa Claus with his poem ‘A Visit From St Nick’ which he had quietly written for his children.

'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS (excerpts)

...He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, and his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot... ...His eyes – how they twinkled! His dimples, how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, and the beard on his chin was as white as the snow. The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, and the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath. ‘He had a broad face and a little round belly, that shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly... OL’ ST NICK

The first Christmas card printed in the early 19th century.

CHRISTMAS TREE

In the mid 19th century, Victoria, queen of England, was wedded to prince Albert of Germany. With him came the decorated evergreen tree which had long been part of the German culture for the winter. Sometime after the wedding, the ‘London Illustrated News’ published an illustration of the royal family around a decorated Christmas tree. A few years later the English people were putting up the Christmas tree and believed it had always been a part of Christmas. It wasn’t long before the settlers in America caught on. The first Christmas card was also illustrated around the same time by J C Hersley in England.

St Nicolas Day was, and still is in Western Christian traditions, celebrated in honour of a 3rd century Greek orthodox bishop. There are many legends told about St Nick that bear an uncanny similarity to our beloved Santa Claus. On St Nicolas Day children would be rewarded with little gifts for being good, while the bad children would sulk in the corner. The Dutch people called him Sinterklaas and, when they settled in New York, they told the other settlers of his legend. One of the stories was of a poor man who had three daughters but couldn’t afford to pay their dowry. This would soon force the oldest of the three girls to take up prostitution and, if things didn’t improve, the other two would have had to follow. Hearing of their plight, St Nick decided to help them out. Legend has it that after dark one night, St Nick placed a pouch of gold St Nick coins in one of the girl’s shoes. The next night he did it again for the second girl. On the third night, the girls’ father decided to keep awake to discover the mysterious source of generosity. And thus he found that it was St Nick. Drawing from these stories, Clement C. Moor, an Episcopal minister, in 1822 wrote a poem for his children. He read it out to them that same night and thought nothing much of it since. But good work seldom stays hidden, and soon the poem found its way to the publishers. It was published under a pseudonym due to the non-Christian references made in the poem and the poet’s association with the church. It was accompanied by an illustration of Santa Claus, as described in the poem, drawn by the artist, Thomas Nast. Moore and Nast became the final word on Santa Claus. ‘A Visit From St Nick’ captivated readers and soon children were searching the night sky for Santa in a sleigh pulled by reindeer.

Thomas Nast's iconic illustration of Santa Claus published along with Moore's 'A Visit From St Nick'.

Rudolf the rednosed reindeer

YULE LOG In the immediate years before and after Christ's death, Europeans would drag in a log and set it on fire for 12 days in the winter

So Christmas became a festival of giving – giving to the people who have less than you and giving to your children and your family, especially to your children. It was a set marketing ploy for retailers and Santa Claus was the perfect mascot. But every mascot needs a sidekick. Rudolf the adorable rednosed reindeer was created by Robert L May, a copywriter for a retail store in America, in 1939. With an embarrassingly red nose, Rudolf was the outcast among Santa’s reindeer.

However, Santa found good use for his nose and chose him to lead the sleigh as he swished through the night sky on Christmas Eve to deliver his presents. When the outcast child and the grandfatherly Santa found each other, the Christmas story was complete.

SATURNALIA A depiction of the Saturnalia celebrations

BOUGHS Notice the evergreen boughs on the walls in early German celebrations

And thus we have Christmas as we know it today, a tradition anchored by authors, poets and copywriters. Its non-spiritual quotient has helped propagate it through the many societies in which it is celebrated. Hence the people, no matter their religion, join in the revelry with the Christians of their societies. Plus it makes good marketing sense for the marketers. All this just skims through the vast history of our Christmas traditions. The deeper one dwells though, the darker it gets. So, I implore you, seek only if you truly wish to find.

PDP-BJP govt in Kashmir T

HE Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was successful in Jharkhand in the assembly poll. Along with its ally AISU, it got 42 seats in the 81 member assembly. It was not a thumping victory but the number of seats which the BJP has got will enable it to form a stable government. The BJP has done well in Kashmir also: It cannot form the government by itself but its vote share is 23 per cent while the vote share of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is 22.7 per cent. The National Conference (NC) got 22.7 per cent and the Congress 18 per cent. The PDP won the largest number of seats – 28 and the BJP 25 seats. After the counting was over, PDP's Mehbooba Mufti said a decision would be taken over the formation of the government only after consultations with other parties. She has to decide whether she will go with the BJP or the Congress and other small parties to form the government. She said “Our priority will be to cobble up a government by hook or by crook.” If she gets the BJP to join her party, she will have more than 53 seats. The magic figure for forming the government is 44. This shows Mehbooba cannot cobble up a government by hook or crook. She has no go but to accept BJP as a partner. It look like she has some reservations about joining the BJP with regard to having a joint government in Kashmir. Before the poll, Mehbooba had said: “It will be a curse if the chief minister of Kashmir were to be from the BJP.”

ERE are lessons in frugality from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Get as much bang for the buck as you can. That was his advice to President Pranab Mukherjee and the Rashtrapati Bhavan staff at the inauguration of the new ceremonial hall in the President’s Estate. Delivering a brief speech on the occasion, he told the gathering that as a Gujarati, he believes in single fare and double journey. That’s why, he said, he wants the newly built hall to be utilized fully and not reserved for use only on Republic Day and Independence Day in case of inclement weather. The guests were somewhat perplexed. What did the PM mean? A few inquiries revealed that he was not impressed by the explanation he got justifying the construction of the new hall. He was told that Rashtrapati Bhavan had long felt the need for a large hall that can serve as an alternative venue for the President’s 'At Home' functions on January 26 and August 15 when the weather turns bad. For instance, on Independence Day, there’s always a threat of rain. And so, the new ceremonial hall came up. It is large enough to hold at least 1,200 persons and is estimated to have cost the exchequer Rs.25 crore to build. In his brief speech, Modi said he is no believer in 'taam-jaam' or pomp and pageantry. He just wants to see money well spent. That’s the Gujarati in him speaking up, as he himself confessed. While the sentiments are well intentioned, the timing was little strange. Yes, the hall was being used for the first time that day. But it also happened to be a celebration for the President’s 79th birthday. There was a cultural function, followed by dinner. Modi’s homily on money struck an odd note. But then, the PM does not wield an iron fist in a velvet glove. He believes in straight talk.

Singh has slipped on another faultline. He has been waging a war against Punjab Congress chief Pratap S. Bajwa, who was handpicked for the post by Rahul. Probably the Captain feels that it’s time for him to make a comeback in state politics, especially after his victory in Amritsar. Rahul's refusal to grant him an audience is a signal that the Gandhi scion is not buying into Singh’s ambitions.

EST Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee came and went without holding the dharna she had threatened outside the PM’s residence. Apparently, she gave up the idea of doing an agitation in the capital on the advice of President Pranab Mukherjee. The President is believed to have advised her that it doesn’t behove a visiting chief minister to sit on dharna in the capital city. She should do whatever she wants in Kolkata but not bring West Bengal-related political issues to Delhi. Mamata realized the wisdom of his words and decided to lower the pitch of her short visit to the capital. Her primary objective was Arati R. HERE is nothing but ‘God’ existing in the world. If you don’t want to use the word God, you can say energy or intelligence. The basis of creation is found throughout all existence. And it is only one; one sun, but you can see it through any window. Many prophets have come to this world and have gone. They have all been like the windows. Through any window you can see the same sun, the same sky. The one sky that is behind the wall is behind the window also. God is in everyone, even in dogs, cats, trees, leaves and ants — in everything in creation. Through the window, you cannot miss it because the window is so transparent. That love and that silence cannot be missed. It’s all one. The purpose of words, all the words we use, the talking we do, is to create silence and love in our hearts. Fun, frolic & fireworks in football final WITH so many celebrities and football giants in the stadium, we got the feel of an AC Milan versus Chelsea in the heart of the satellite city on a Saturday evening. The crowd was enthralled by the presence of celebrities. It was fun seeing Tendulkar and Ganguly talking about football rather than cricket. There was frolic all over the stadium. There were no cheerleaders but the stadium was colourful and packed to the capacity. Appu the elephant was doing rounds in the entire stadium circle. To complete the football extravaganza, when the goal was headed by Atletico de Kolkota's Rafique, and when the final whistle was blown, it was fireworks all round the stadium. Best Santa joke SANTA and Banta jokes are a legend. But the best Santa (Claus) joke is that cracked by the government on school children by proposing some sort of activities or projects on Christmas Day. How come such brilliant ideas did not come on Janmashtami, Ganesh Chathurti, Diwali or Dussehra? Would that have been unsecular? Will something like this be LETTER OF THE DAY done on Holi next year? Where the Sikh stands WITH the launch of conversion offensive by the Hindutva Brigade, the question about the religious identity of Sikhs has again been brought to the fore. In this context, the following points need to be taken into account: the word Sikh is the archaic form of the Sanskrit word Shishya (disciple). The followers of Sikhism are the disciples of the 10 revered Gurus. The Guru-Shishya tradition is of Vedic origin, names of the great Gurus are those of the Hindu gods/their associates, like Ramdas, Amardas, Govind, Arjun, Harrai, Harkishen, Hargovind and Angad. NOT A FAVOUR: The common man looks forward to hassle-free dealings with the staff in government offices, most particularly the ones dealing with public utility services; the discharge of such services ought not to be treated as a favour. THE Congress and other pseudosecularist parties in the country are vociferously demanding from the NDA government the fulfillment of the election promises made in their manifesto by the Saffron Party. In this connection, people of the country can pose the same question to the Congress and the erstwhile NF, UPA and UF governments, who were in power at different periods of time in the past. Will they be able to provide the balance sheet of their previous stints of power at the Centre? — Vineet Phadtare, Borivali

THE BJP is being expected to abide by the principles of good governance. The common man looks forward to hassle-free dealings with the staff in government offices, most particularly the ones

dealing with public utility services. The discharge of such services ought not to be treated as a favour. To improve the law and order situation in country, it is their foremost task to make citizens obey the law in true spirit – fear of law implementation is a must in the minds of all citizens. Public officials must be penalised for indecent language and undesirable public conduct. Sadly though, this period is too short to judge the BJP, but the desired outcome of its policies are not much seen. The bureaucrats are major hurdles as they don’t allow projects to move forward. They obstruct the way of development. Modi government must tackle them with strict action and must be applied to controlling public servants too. — M Kumar, New Delhi

Aunty Maureen will not be singing ‘O Holy Night’ any more. At least, not on this earthly plane. After she had attended the morning Mass, as usual, and prayed at the Blessed Sacrament thereafter. The very same day that another great Indian ‘apostle of

‘O Holy Night, the stars are brightly shining, it is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth… Fall on your knees; oh hear the angel voices, O Night divine! O night when Christ was born…’

O

ne of my earliest memories of Christmases past is of my choir mistress, Miss Maureen Stanton, singing, ‘O Holy Night’ with such touching fervour, at the midnight Mass in the little old church of Cavel. As both organ music and her sweet, angelic voice drifted skywards, the stars shone brighter than ever, and the Child

Aunty Maureen’s ‘O Holy Night’ Jesus was born again, even as the little congregation fell on its knees... “An angel sang” they whispered after the Mass, in awe and wonder… And in her journal, in her neat handwriting, with the small ‘r’s always in capitals, Aunty Maureen herself wrote with child-like simplicity: 'An angel sang!’… those who have heard me have told me, “an angel sang!” What made Aunty Maureen’s rendition of ‘O Holy Night’ so special?

What gave it that ethereal ‘angelic’ quality? Surely, it must have had something to do with her piety, her child-like Faith and Trust in the Infant Jesus, the painstaking way in which she arranged flowers for the Altar and polished the vases till they shone, the long hours she spent before the Tabernacle in prayer, and the even longer hours she spent patiently teaching little children to pray, to speak, to sing. Aunty Maureen did not only

teach ‘The little bells of Cavel’ (as she fondly christened her beloved Children’s Choir) how to sing and dance. She taught the big bell(e)s too. And she will always be fondly remembered for her Nativity Play, with the beautiful Virgin and curlyhaired Child Jesus, and the host of characters that peopled it. The play not only brought joy to a weary world, but raised the muchneed funds for the new Baretto High School building, which

stands till today… And on many a Christmas night, she kept singing ‘O Holy Night’ for a rapt congregation… she sang it in the open air in the Cavel School Compound, she sang it when she was burning with fever and unable to speak, let alone sing, she sang it within the 200-year-old walls of the Church in Cavel, and she sang it within the 400-year-old walls of St. Andrew’s Church in Bandra. And each time, the congregation

A non-Christian Christmas

With Christmas being one of the most widely celebrated festivals across the world, it has its own regional varieties. Vinaya Patil talks about Christmas experienced by a non-Christian in India

I

ndia, constitutionally being a secular country, celebrates hundreds of festivals every year – Hindu, Islamic, Christian, Jain, Buddhist, Zoroastrian and more. Why Christmas stands out in a country that has a tiny Christian population (2.3 per cent) is because of its attractive package, in terms of the rosy gifts, the fancy Christmas trees, the snow associated with it, the stars and of course the holidays. With convent schools catching the fancy of most Indian parents, Christmas enters these children's lives pretty early in life. Convents across India send students on a nice weeklong Christams-New Year holiday, complete with pre-holiday Christmas competitions and celebrations. These competitions range from Christmas star making, Carol singing, Greeting card making, Gift wrapping, Christmas Tree decorations and cake making. All of these are bound to excite school kids, making them look forward to Christmas time. Schools also often arrange the Christmas tableau, telling the same tale for years about how Jesus Christ was

born and how he was blessed by the angels. Children never get tired of doing it, because of the sheer fun of it and the novelty that still surrounds Christianity for the Indian non-Christians. There is also the very lovable image of a Santa Claus which attracts people of all demographics. The idea of gift-giving and joy associated with Santa is reason enough for all the enthusiasm that surrounds him. Stemming from this very Santa is the game of 'Secret Santa', widely played in schools, colleges and offices, where friends and colleagues secretly exchange gifts during the Christmas week. Another fact associated with the festival is that of the winters and the corresponding snow. Most Christmas-related images have the snow element. Even our favourite Santa comes in a sleigh ridden by the red-nosed reindeer through snow-capped mountains. And this, is a very fancy idea for the Indians, con-

sidering most parts of India have never witnessed any snow whatsoever. A festival involving snow is a very desirable idea for most of us here. With a broader and more liberal religious view, most youngsters now also attend the midnight Christmas mass with their Christian friends, for mere curiosity and knowledge sake, increasing the number of non-Christians in the churches every year, despite the 'Bread and Wine for Christians only'. While all is well with the spirit of the celebrations, what is sad is how we are not really being told about the interesting tales and traditions that precede the festival. I am sure most non-Christians who look look forward to Christmas for all the fun, will enjoy it better if they knew some stories better. Nevertheless, while our Christian friends are busy preparing, all of us non-Christians are completely enjoying the festive season as always and more than ready to be play guests.

A country of refuge, Switzerland appears to many parents as the ideal place to educate their children in a framework of peace and security

By Christophe X Clivaz

Tradition of excellence Rousseau, Pestalozzi and Piaget were among the great founders of the Swiss educational tradition. They travelled the world to spread their theories on teaching to all corners of the earth. Firmness, discipline, openness and an all-round education, with a focus on personal as well as academic development, are the foundations of this tradition, one that is still practiced today. The country prides itself on being able to offer a first-class education through its pre- and post-university studies and in being the leader in scientific research. These qualities ensure that pupils are equipped to confront the present day challenges of globalisation. Continued on pg 14 ÂŤ

Welcome to Swiss learning Continued from pg 13 «

Cultural diversity and multilingual education Cultural diversity makes the boarding schools in Switzerland truly unique. The students not only learn basic academics in their classrooms, everyone also gains first-hand experience as young ambassadors and diplomats, meeting children of different ethnic, linguistic, religious, familial and cultural backgrounds. Everyone is a foreigner. No one nationality is a dominant majority. Friendship is the major currency in this universe. Fluency in more than one language after a few years in the country is highly encouraged and regularly attained. An extensive offer Currently boarding schools in Switzerland accept students until Class 12. The majority of these schools offer intensive studies in English, French, Italian or German as a second language enabling all students to quickly integrate into the mainstream programme. The option of pursuing bilingual studies is also a popular feature of Swiss boarding schools. Programmes on offer lead to a range of examinations renowned throughout the world. These include the IGCSE, Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), A-Levels, the Swiss Federal Maturity, the French Baccalaureate and the German Abitur. These certificates are accepted for entry into Swiss universities and to universities in other countries according to the specific conditions of each institution.

Summer camps The Swiss learning schools offer a wide range of international summer camps with language courses in the morning and extensive sporting activities in the afternoons such as tennis, mountain climbing, rock climbing, rafting, golf academy, horse riding, sailing, basketball, football academy in conjunction with AC Milan, and many more. The evenings are fun packed with entertainment, dancing, music, creativity, theatre and cinema. Excursions are also included in the programmes to visit Swiss cities and countryside. The programmes host children and teenagers from nearly 50 different nationalities. Such an exciting mix of backgrounds and cultures lead to lasting international friendships for students and teachers alike. All the school’s programmes are aimed at building a harmonious, disciplined and supportive community in exceptional surroundings.

The main entry requirements are good academic grades and a Statement of Purpose. The Statement of Purpose is one of the most important aspects of your application. It is a well-written essay detailing your reasons for applying to a specific course in the UK. What are the points to keep in mind while writing an SOP to apply to a UG course in the UK? —Sahil The Statement of Purpose is one of the most important aspects of your application.

Starting off with the basics, a statement of purpose is a well-written essay detailing your reasons for applying to a specific course in the UK. Since most courses in the UK are extremely specialized and streamlined, the university wants to know about your interests, and at the same time, wants to get to know you as a person. There are a few questions that your SOP should answer: How did you get interested in the course? What have you studied in high school that ties you to the course? What have you done in terms of your extracurricular activities that will be an asset to you in college? What are some of your future goals? Why do you want to study in the UK? When you have finished writing your SOP, make sure that all these questions have been answered. In some cases the SOP will have a word limit, so make sure you check that before you begin.

designer in her

I

am a graduate from the London College of Fashion. When I was young, we used to travel abroad and I used to get enthralled by the shopping malls because we couldn’t find the same in India. Shopping for clothes/international brands and labels was quite fascinating. I was very fond of dressing up and dressing others. All these combined factors induced me to choose a career in fashion designing Fashion designing requires creativity. I love creating beautiful garments, ones I can shape in my imagination and dress up people of all size and shapes. I like to give a universal appeal to

“Fashion designing requires creativity,” says Farah Sanjana, fashion designer

She found the

the clothes. You can make everyone look glamorous. I love expressing my imagination in designs which can transform common people into glam divas. Certainly education has helped me to grow from an amateur to a professional. I am known to make a bold statement with unconventional elegance in my creations. Constantly experimenting with androgynous shapes and rigid structures on feminine fabrics, my conceptions celebrate exclusive ethnic inspirations. With its trademark strong and sharp cuts, pristine colors and unique embellishments, I try to keep the glamour quotient high and create a look of edgy sophistication. Education has played a pivotal role in making me who I am today. Training was fun and exhilarating. I still remember my first day at the London College of Fashion. It was like I was thrown into a deep ocean. I didn’t even know how to stitch a button. Managing different industry machines and motor peddles was a task. My first garment was a disaster. But LCF and the professors helped me a lot. It was an awesome exposure through workshops, field trips, art exhibitions, etc. Post graduation, I have worked with designer Vivienne Westwood, an amazing person, who groomed me as an individual. Working under her was an inspiration. She was 70+ but still used to travel using her cycle and was as energetic as a young 18-year-old with the same passion and energy. She still inspires me to work relentlessly and keep the good work going. There I worked on various projects like the London Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, designing for celebs like Kim Cattral for the 'Sex and the City' premier, Ann Hathaway for 'Alice in Wonderland', etc. It was a thrilling experience. My job profile includes creating/visualising an idea and producing a design by

hand or using computer-aided design (CAD); keeping up to date with emerging fashion trends as well as general trends relating to fabrics, colours and shapes; working with others in the design team, such as buyers and forecasters, to develop products to meet a brief; liaising closely with sales, buying and production teams on an ongoing basis to ensure the item suits the customer, market and price points; sourcing, selecting and buying fabrics, trims, fastenings and embellishments; developing a pattern that is cut and sewn into sample garments and supervising the making up of these, including fitting, detailing and adaptations; overseeing production; negotiating with customers and suppliers; managing marketing, finances and other business activities, and so on. Post my studies and gaining experience from my stint at Vivienne Westwood, I came back to India. I didn’t want to go back to the UK and work for someone else. I decided to launch my own label and this was the best decision of my life – to work for myself. I started with minimal investment. With one tailor in my drawing room, churning out garments, experimenting patterns, cuts, etc. training the tailor as in India we lack the international expertise. Then designed a line for Lakme Fashion Week and got selected for the gen-next show. Remuneration as a fresher differs from individual to individual. The need of the hour is affordable pricing, there is stiff competition in the market with competitive pricing. I am still in the teething process. It requires three–four years minimum to become a professional. It is a learning process, a never ending one! As an established professional the remuneration depends from person to person, how established and well known you are. The fashion Industry is a big family. You meet lots of people and learn from them. I have a lot of mentors, guides who have groomed me into a good designer. The biggest challenge is to deal with labour. Finding skilled labour in India is a task. There is a shortage of good labour in India, especially when I shifted my base from Nagpur to Jalandhar post marriage. For the future, I plan to start a men’s wear collection soon. For those who want to enter this industry I will say – there is no replacement for hard work. Success is in the detail, concentrate on your unique design sensibilities and highlight your trademark style so as to make it eponymous to your label. Channelise your skills and talent in the right direction. There are multiple avenues available where you can carve a niche for yourself from designing to styling, merchandising, etc. The fashion industry in India is growing phenomenally and there is plenty of scope for a good career in this field. As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

Smartur.com introduces Augmented Reality and Stereoscopic 3D A

Hyderabad-based start-up, Smartur.com, is set to bring in hitherto unheard of experiential learning into Indian classrooms at affordable costs. Smartur.com is now ready with its full-fledged digital classroom solution, www.smartur3D.in built on Augmented Reality (AR) and Stereoscopic 3D platforms. Smartur.com has found a strong use case for this technology that will radically improve the adoption of digital solutions in the schools and become a game changer for the e-learning industry in India. Schools who are interested can download Smartur 3D course content from www.smartur3D.in free of cost for the current academic year till June 2015. “High costs have been the greatest deterrent for adoption of e-learning modules. Currently, most of the solutions available in the market

are priced per student per month basis. Hitech course content from www.smartur3D.in is available for a very nominal fixed annual fee irrespective of the number of students or classrooms a school has. www.smartur3D.in is available for all schools to experience the power of augmented reality free of cost for the academic year 2014-2015,” said Smartur.com Founder & CEO, Neeraj Jewalkar. With AR, one can experience the next level of virtual imaging which transports characters or elements into their environment and it can be a foundational technology in education. Learning in Indian classrooms is basically blackboard teaching which caters to the semantic memory of children. With AR, children can view, for example, the human heart as if it were in front of them. Thus it would cater to their episodic memory which is

known to last for life. There are 15 lakh schools in India today of which 13 lakh schools are supported by the government and two lakh schools are privately run. Of these two lakh private schools, only about 35,000 schools have proper digital classroom solutions in place due to the cost factor. To overcome this major impediment, Smartur 3D software Suite has been priced at an affordable Rs 30,000 per school for an academic year. At present, it is available for Class VI to X for biology and chemistry subjects. Smartur 3D content is built for use on computers, laptops and projectors. Smartur.com will provide the software while schools can use their existing hardware or buy new hardware of their choice based on their budgets. To use AR mode of Smartur 3D, schools will just need a web camera which is available for as less as

Rs 600 onwards in the market. Pilot deployment of Smartur 3D solution across 20 countries includes India, UK, Canada, South Africa, Uganda, Kenya, Philippines. In US, more than 500 schools have already started using Smartur 3D in classroom learning. It has plans to bring out tablet and mobile versions of Smartur 3D and also cover other subjects in the near future. Smartur3D.in facts: Piloted since July 2014 - currently, over 500 schools use the product in the US and over 50 schools in India. Uses Augmented Reality and Stereoscopic 3D platforms. Offering the product free for the academic year 2014-15 to all schools across India. Physics, Maths and Geography in 2015.

VIDEOS EMERGING AS THE NEXT LEARNING TOOL FOR DIGITAL NATIVES By Beas Dev Ralhan

T

he public cloud services market in India is on pace to grow 29.8 per cent in 2014 to total $550 million. Software as a service (SaaS) market will grow at a steady CAGR of 19.5 per cent through 2016. Gartner also predicts that from 2013 through 2017, $4 billion will be spent on cloud services in India. Use of technology in our everyday lives has become inevitable. The cloud has become a powerful tool not only for all businesses across industries of every size, including small, midsize and enterprise organisations, but even for the government sector. This becomes evident with the recently launched cloud computing project ‘MeghRaj’ to accelerate delivery of eservices. The technology revolution has hugely impacted the education arena too. Cloudbased learning platform for schools enables students to access study content using any device such as tablets and laptops even outside of school. Such activities contribute in broadening a child's thinking process and igniting their curiosity. The digital trend in the education sector is paving way for technology-based solutions in order to revitalise India’s education system. Education delivery, consumption and monitoring is moving onto a digital platform making the future generations competitive at a global level. In the current era of convergence, the trend of tablets, net books, laptops and audio-visual equipment to impart knowledge is also catching up. The findings of a latest survey depict that video for homework is witnessing unparalleled growth and that mobile computing has no looking back. In addition, students do not use traditional computers to connect to the internet at home and prefer using mobile devices like laptops, tablets, etc to plug into the virtual educational space. There has also

been a transition in the patterns of internet connectivity. Most students are keen on 3G or 4G enabled devices to connect to the internet or internetenabled TVs and Wii consoles. For example, videos are being used to re-create scenes from important pieces of literature to give students a more engaging view of history and the world. Consequently, they are also getting more creative and thoughtful. Besides, the easy-to-use green screen technology is doing wonders. It allows students to render virtual environments like newsrooms or stages for mock presidential debates / parliament sessions, moulding them into more confident and worldy-wise adults. These debates or simulat-

« MENTOR’S DESK

ed parliament sessions are then webcast so that students from all over the world can interact on the online platform and share views. Apart from making abstract concepts easy-tounderstand, these solutions help kids through simulations, activities and standardisation of assessments. In 2014, video-based learning will continue to transform the primary and secondary education realm. Irrespective of their age, students have the natural ability to understand and, in a very real sense, read visual media. Groundbreaking educators, who have a keen eye on the future, will put in more focus on teaching and encouraging video-based learning. Higher education space is in a period of great experimentation thanks to the field of online learning. Learning through visual aids today has instilled a healthy desire in students to share quality work in a digital environment and innovative teachers are capitalising on this medium to help students succeed in an ever-widening digital world. The education industry is going through a transformation, yet the changes in the system are really slow as compared to the other industries. There are many complex reasons for this slow pace of change, including lack of resources and resistance to new practices. However, the most important obstacles to realising the potential of digital technology in education are provisions of copyright law concerning the use of educational content, as well as the business and institutional structures shaped by the law. The solution to these problems is only to understand the importance of digital learning in this era of tech-savvy parents and children. Focus on the infrastructure and resources to make content available to all so that the authorities are inspired to make amendments in the provisions of the copyright law is also important. These changes can be instilled in the law and society only when we understand the significance of e-learning.

ipping my usual tea today, I saw Kailash Satyarthi speaking in his usual gentlemanly order. He said, "Tell Pakistani terrorists to take away my life and leave my innocent children." That's when I got acquainted with the news of the attack on a school in Peshawar. I feel aghast and horrified listening to the news that pertains to saying the kids were made to stand in line and 'shot'. How did we as humans get this thirst for blood? Yesterday was about Sydney and today Pakistan? Where are we exactly headed? There is a wise saying in Arabic 'Bachhe sabke sanjhe' and now, these reports claim against this. I cannot believe how inhuman and horrendous a person can be to kill children. Are we trying to show 'might is right'? Are we not empathising with the truth at large? Are we all

shying away from the truth? Some time ago, when Gaza faced similar attacks on schools, the world cried with them. The face of children stands right in front of my eyes as people are talking about all these happenings around. We also have to note that we are killing not only innocent Gods but also, the future generations. We have come to a point where all we are displaying are weapons that have taken away our human morals. What’s shocking is this is happening in Peshawar, a state which believed that weapons are of immense might. Huge sums of life have been lost. More than that, we have killed the spirit of countries. Whether it is Pakistan, Gaza or Sydney, killing of children is bad. We are all killing and murdering the future of the next generation.

The team returned home, gratified at the huge success of the event and rejoiced in myriad moments. Over the last few years, we have witnessed humanity fade before our eyes. In such a scenario, the team of Aahan 2015 decided to take up an initiative. On International Human Rights Day, more than 50 Aahanites were seen organising a rally at Bandstand, Bandra. Amplifying the enthusiasm levels, they fought against the violation of human rights on an otherwise calm and serene evening. People traipsing around the venue were seen joining in, to support the cause that the Aahanites were rooting for. Slogans were chanted with unparalleled fervour and banners and streamers alike were hoisted, binding together like-minded individuals forever.

E-Cell’s events – Management Roadies and Business board were the crowd magnets in the cultural festival. While on the other hand, competitions like UNICUS, Hire, Consultant, Webpreneur and Wall street were some of the biggest events in the technical festival.

Last year, AAJJA introduced a yearly aid/mentorship programme for students in need of financial help to partially meet educational expenses such as books, stationery and fees. "It is a very humble contribution", said Rajiv Harmalkar, the Vice President of AAJJA. “We are doing this purely out of our love for our alma mater. We want to establish a bridge between the campus and the real world for our young students for technology, concepts and practicalities of the professional world outside the campus," he said. Sir JJ College of Architecture is a century-old institution, featuring some of the senior, noted architects of the century as part of its alumni. The college has at least 70 batches of living ex-students numbering a total of approximately 3,500. AAJJA also plans to hold talks, lectures of eminent personalities from different fields and workshops for continuing education for their members. It holds competitions for the students which are judged by the members. This helps to facilitate interaction. Although only three students were offered this programme last year, the intention, going forward, is for it to be extended to three-four students each from Second Year to Fourth Year batches, totaling 12-16 students. This was announced at the annual get-together at the college campus. The 200-odd gathering included some of the most accomplished names in the world of architecture in India. A design wall was organised showcasing the works of the members of the Alumni. Some panels included work that went beyond architecture. Architects, being multi-talented and multifaceted, often dabble in endeavours outside the scope of their profession such as painting, photography and writing. anatomy of lives of socially dense Indian joint families. A pioneer in making women-centric films, which were rare in the 1960s, Balachander focused on issues encircling the lives of ordinary women facing social and economic odds in films like Aval Oru Thodarkadhai, Haasan starrer Apoorva Raagangal and Rajinikanth and Sujatha starrer Avargal. His scripts were also the first which captured heroism in the lives of ordinary women in south Indian cinema. Born in Thanjavur in 1930, Balachander developed an interest for films when he was just nine years old. He nurtured his interest during his college days in Annamalai University at Chidambaram, where he did a bachelor's in Zoology. Balachander had a brief stint as a teacher and a clerk but these could not keep him away from his real passion -- cinema. Though he took up a government job at Accountant General's Office, he continued his experiments in theatre and wrote dialogues for Deivathai in 1965. It was a mere coincidence that he ended up writing the script for Major Chandrakanth which turned out to be a huge success. It was such a hit among the audience that the hero of the film Sundarajan came to be known as 'Major' Sundarajan ever since.

ELBOURNE: Phillip Hughes' tragic death came back to haunt Australia after star allrounder Shane Watson was hit on the helmet by a vicious bouncer from pacer James Pattinson during their training session at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The 33-year-old was left shaken by the fierce blow to the head and he left the MCG nets following the incident that put an early end to Australia's training session. Selector Mark Waugh and a Cricket Australia spokeswoman later said that Watson will be monitored for signs of concussion ahead of the Boxing Day Test. Waugh said Watson was "pretty much OK to start off with, then he felt off-colour back in his hotel room". "So I believe he's going to have a few tests overnight and we'll see how he comes up in the morning so hopefully he'll be OK to play in the Test match," Waugh told Channel Ten's BBL coverage. He said the selectors would wait on the results of the tests before deciding whether to call up another all-rounder or batsman to the squad. Pattinson too looked distressed as

he also walked out of the nets even as players and officials walked up to Watson to check on him. Watson was hit on the helmet when he tried to dodge the bouncer. The impact caused Watson to fall to his knees as he removed his helmet, inspected it and then walked off. He sat with his head in his hands for several minutes before leaving the session with team doctor Peter Brukner, who treated him. Watson skipped the team's public appearance at the MCG for Cricket Australia's Family Day activities, returning instead to the team hotel.

Vice-captain Brad Haddin later confirmed his teammate had escaped unscathed but did not want to read too much into the incident. "I had a chat to him - he's a bit shaken, but he's ok. It's just getting hit in the head - he's just a bit shaken," Haddin said. "He's shaken as anyone would be. I can't really go into any more details because there's no more details to give." A CA spokeswoman said team doctor Peter Brukner kept an eye on Watson during the day and he "seems fine". "He (Brukner) will look at him again in the morning just

MELBOURNE: Despite trailing 0-2 going into the Boxing Day Test, the Indian cricket team has something to cheer about as Bhuvneshwar Kumar's hopes of playing in the Melbourne match increased after the pacer went through the MCG nets without any discomfort here today. The 24-year-old mediumpacer injured his ankle during the warm-up games and was ruled out of the first two Tests with Dhawal Kulkarni flying in as back-up. India missed Kumar's services in Adelaide and Brisbane as they lost both the matches. of some verbal volleys in the Brisbane Test, Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson says that India's sledging attempt at the Gabba last week backfired against his team. Australia were in trouble at 247 for six when Johnson came to the crease, still 161 runs behind India's first-innings total of 408 when the close-in fielders tried to unsettle the burly pacer. But Johnson said that verbal exchanges only made his resolve stronger as he and skipper Steve Smith stitched a 148-run partnership. "It took my mind off the game, which was a good thing because I wasn't focused on the scoreboard. I was able to go out there and play my shots. I wanted to play with good intent," Johnson said here today.

quite the session I wanted. Then to go out there and cop it from a few of their boys, it just played into our hands. I was able to play my game and not worry about anything. It's all part of the game but I think it took them off their game. They went a bit too far maybe," he added. Coming in at No.8, Johnson scored a valuable 88 in a match that Australia won by four wickets, giving the hosts a 2-0 lead in the four-match series. The 33-year-old southpaw, who singled out Rohit Sharma as the aggressor of the group, said that the batsman's dismal form in the match only proved that his plan turned against him. "I said a few words early and then just let it go after that and just started smiling at Rohit Sharma," Johnson said.

Pak, NZ were reluctant to play fourth ODI: Younis K

ARACHI: Former captain, Younis Khan has said that both the Pakistan and New Zealand teams were reluctant to play the fourth oneday international in Abu Dhabi following the terrorist attack on Army Public High School in Peshawar on December 16. The Pakistan cricket board came in for strong criticism for not postponing the match

after the deadly incident in which some 132 school children were killed by terrorists. Younis was the only Pakistani player to have openly voiced his opinion that the players were not in a state of mind to play the match and it should be postponed. "Not only us but even the New Zealand players were shaken by the incident as it was very tragic and sad," Younis said on the sidelines of a function yesterday. "Both teams were reluctant

to play the match but went ahead and dedicated it to the slain children," he added. Younis also disclosed that the New Zealand one-day captain, Kane Williamson and some other players had sent cash and some other gifts for the children who had survived. "I will definitely be going to Peshawar soon to visit the children who were lucky to survive the attack and I will distribute the cash and gifts the New Zealand has given for them," Younis said.

BCCI maintains opposition to DRS in current form

MUMBAI: Two days after senior off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and a few former India players came out in support of the much-debated Decision Review System, the Cricket Board maintained today that the referral process in its current form is unacceptable. "We have always maintained that DRS in its current form is not acceptable to us. Our opposition is to the ball tracking technology and the process by which players have to take the call. Why can't the third umpire sitting in front of TV screen decide on the referrals," BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel told reporters here. Patel, who spoke after the Governing Council meeting of the Indian Premier League that was chaired by Ranjib Biswal, said if ICC makes these changes BCCI has been asking for in the DRS, the Indian Board would embrace it. "If DRS can be brought to near fool-proof, which is not the case now, we will accept it," said the Baroda-based Patel when asked about the raging debate over referrals following a slew of dubious decisions by the umpires which went mostly against India in the ongoing series

against Australia Down Under. Two days ago Harbhajan had spoken out in favour of DRS which is not in place in the India-Australia series. "I believe it's time that we accepted the DRS as it will only benefit our cause. If you look, in both Test matches, India were very competitive but there were key moments when our boys got a raw deal," Harbhajan had told PTI. Former cricketers Ajit Wadekar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Mohammad Azharuddin, Erapalli Prasanna and Chetan Chauhan had also spoken out in support of DRS. Meanwhile, Patel said the IPL GC had decided to hold the players' auction in the middle of February 2015. "We have a small window before the start of the World Cup (after the conclusion of the tri-series in Australia) and want to hold the auctions then," said Patel. Patel said the Indian squad for both these limited overs tournaments would be picked between January 7 and 10. The preliminary Cup squad of 30 has been announced and it has to be pruned to the final squad of 15 for the February 14-March 29 mega event in Australia and New Zealand.

AIBA urges Atwal credits Tiger Woods & family for Dubai Open triumph IOA to recognise Boxing India

LAUSSANE: Calling on the IOA to recognise Boxing India, International Boxing Association (AIBA) President Dr Ching Kuo-Wu has said that refusing affiliation to BI amounts to going against the Olympic Charter. Speaking to sports website 'insidethegame.Biz' here, Dr Wu offered his opinion on the continuing logjam over Boxing India after the IOA refused to grant affiliation to the newlyformed body. "The NOC (National Olympic Committee) has nothing to do with the recognition of the National Federation. It is up to the International Federation to recognise the National Federation," Wu said. The IOA has adamantly denied recognition to BI, stating that there have been complaints against the manner in which elections for the body were conducted. However, it has refused to specify the nature of complaints despite repeated requests for recognition from BI. The IOA has maintained that it only recognises the erstwhile Indian Amateur Boxing Federation, which has been terminated by AIBA for manipulation in elections. BI came into existence after fresh polls were conducted in September this year under the supervision of an AIBA observer. "This is nothing to do with the Government. It is up to the IF to recognise the National Federation, not the Government to recognise it," explained Wu, who is a member of the IOC's Executive Board. The AIBA chief said he has already taken up the matter with IOA chief N Ramachandran during the recent IOC meeting in Monte Carlo.

S

INGAPORE: Indian golfer Arjun Atwal has credited his friendship with Tiger Woods and the strong family support for restoring his former glory after he won the Dubai Open last weekend. Victory at the inaugural USD 500,000 Asian Tour event was especially sweet for the 41year-old as it has been four years since his historic win at

the 2010 Wyndham Championship on the PGA TOUR that he last tasted success. Beset by injuries and losing his card on the PGA TOUR, Atwal, a former Asian Tour number one, has been struggling to get back to his best in the last four years, relying on the goodwill of sponsors to tee up at events. "All the tournaments I played

in this year were on sponsor's invites this year. This (Dubai Open) was my fifth invite in a row actually. I'm thankful to all the sponsors that have given me invites. Thank God I don't have to do that again. I never thought that I would be asking for invites on the Asian Tour," said Atwal, who had also harboured thoughts of calling time on the sport which he picked up at the age of 14. It took his strong family support to see some of Atwal's old magic return at the majestic Els Club Dubai last week. "It's been my dad, my wife and my whole family who has been really supportive of me. Especially during those really dark days when I really didn't think I could play anymore. But they never let me believe that I wouldn't be playing anymore. "I could come back to India and work with my dad and it would be all right, but it's been good. They have been really

supportive," said Atwal. Like his good friend Woods who is also seeking to rediscover his brilliance on the golf course, Atwal is thankful the close friendship he shares with the former world number one has brought him back to his playing best. "You know, we've become like really, really close. Him going through his stuff and me struggling the last couple of years, we've been there for each other. "It's almost to the point where we're like there're very few friends in the world that will be there for you when you need them the most, and he's one of them. And I'm there for him, as well," said Atwal. While plans are still sketchy for the Floridabased Indian in the United States, he knows he will be a regular fixture on the region's premier Tour come 2015 after earning a priceless two-year winner's exemption.
