ith just 24 hours left before the new fares come into effect, thousands of commuters were seen standing patiently in long lines outside the booking counters of most Central and Western suburban railway stations to buy their annual, half yearly and quarterly season tickets. The rush is on to beat the deadline of 11.59 pm on June 24, 2014 until which commuters can purchase season tickets at the existing fares. The steeply hiked new fares will
come into force from June 25, 2014. CR and WR have reported that they have generated huge funds through the sale of season tickets in last three days. However, Railway officials said that this money is of no direct use for the railways as it is deposited in the Central Treasury in the account of Indian Railways. On an average, sale of annual season ticket on WR were just 50 tickets per day. However, officials said that a total of 5,527 annual season tickets were sold on Monday Continued on pg 5 «

CITY OPINIONS
Do you think there should be a roll back in the proposed hike in railway fares? Santosh Gadewar Businessman No. We don't mind if the railways increase fare tariff, but there should be an overall improvement in services. The frequent accidents should stop.
Dashrath Pawar Serviceman Yes. The suburban season ticket has been more than doubled according to the new tariff. My monthly salary is not increasing in that proportion.
Bhai Mirlekar Social Worker No. Since the last decade, the railways did not increase the fare. For new projects, they need funds. If they don't raise the tariff today, the services cannot be upgraded.
Gajanan Pattewar Entrepreneur Yes. The railways should roll back the fare hike. They have increased more than double, which is not sustainable by the common man. The hike should be rational and affordable to all.
Munna Hakke Student Yes. The Railway Ministry should roll back the passenger fare hike. The common man is already suffering from the rising inflation. This is like an additional burden.

Since admissions to First Year Degree college have already begun, MU cannot introduce any hike in fees this academic year
By Yatin Ingle
W
hile there has been a string of protests by teachers and students against the Mumbai University's (MU) plan to hike fees, the delay has led to a situation wherein the fees cannot be hiked this academic year as the admissions for the First Year Degree College has already begun. The Management Council and senate members have confirmed the 'good news' for the students. The decision to hike the fees has been on since 2007-08. In September 2012, the fees review committee of MU had submitted its proposal to the university after discussing the revision in several meetings. The committee had proposed a hike in tuition fees for unaided colleges in the regular BA,
BCom and BSc courses from the current Rs.3,000 to Rs.9,000 to cover the increase in teachers’ salaries and also for the unaided divisions in aided colleges. A meeting was held by the varsity and the fees hike committee in June where a new resolution was passed stating that the fees can be hiked and claimed by colleges depending on the facilities and infrastructure provided by the institution. In 2013, the fees committee had proposed a 30 per cent fees hike. Later, the Management Council asked the MU for reviewing the proposal. Later, after the review reports were submitted by the committee, the MU had kept a proposal of 25 per cent fees hike which was then opposed by the teachers, senate members and various students' organisations. Though the varsity
hiked this year. The fees can be hiked only before the admissions of an academic year begin. Once the admission process begins no such decision to hike fees can be taken.” In the first week of June, the MU had set up a meeting with all the students' organisations of the city. The meeting was held by the Pro Vice Chancellor, Registrar and other authorities of the varsity. Though the students' organisations had opposed the fees hike, the principals stated that there should only be a substantial hike in fees. The fees should be hiked only by 10 per cent considering those colleges with 'A' grade awarded by the National Assessment and Acrediation Council (NAAC) and the colleges paying the salaries as per the pay scale of the government commissions to its employes.
State-run Marathi schools ‘bandh’ on July 1 Maharashtra State Teachers’ Association has called for a ‘bandh’ as a protest against the government's decision to shut down schools having very few number of students By Yatin Ingle
T
he state government's decision to shut down government schools with very few students enrolled has left the teachers disappointed. Shutting down of these schools will render the teachers
jobless and the teachers' union thus asked for a roll-back of this decision. The Maharahstra State Teachers' Association has declared a bandh in the state government Marathi medium schools on July 1 to register their protest. The Right to Education Act states that the lower primary class should have a minimum strength of 30 students and higher primary should have a minimum student strength of 35. However, in secondary schools, the government has fixed the number at 71. As the private schools have now taken over, most of the government schools are unable to retain the average student strength in a classroom. The rule also states that any school or class-
Schools to be shut down across the state: 12,000 Probable jobless teachers in Maharashtra: 14,000 Mumbai: 1,500 room unable to have the average number of students will be shut down. The government has already decided to close down 12,000 schools across Maharashtra snatching away the jobs of around 45,000 teachers. In Mumbai alone, around 1,500 teachers are at a risk of losing their jobs. Anil Bornare, Maharastra State Teachers' Association, said, “The state government has side-tracked
the teachers. This is unfair.” The teachers' union has also stated that it will carry out a strong agitation on June 27 at the Azad Maidan. Kapil Patil, MLC and president of Lok Bharti, said, “The number of surplus teachers has increased manifold because of the government’s wrong interpretation of provisions under the Right to Education Act. All the teachers across the state will hold a meeting with a higher power committee of the state government over the removal of such rules. This rule will render thousands of teachers jobless. The government should consider the teachers' grievances and remove the new rule.”
A year without water
By Aroosa Ahmed & Khushboo Panjabi
T
he residents of Grand Square on Ghodbunder Road in Thane are facing a unique problem. Right from the day they received the keys to their properties in September 2013, those living in the 13 buildings in a total of 429 flats and those running the 56 shops, have been without TMC water supply. There is no water supply to residents living in a radius of 1 km, despite of the builder promising them that water connections would be made available 10 months ago. The builder has stated that he had sent two letters to the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) asking to provide the residents with water supply on humanitarian grounds but he did not receive any positive reply. The residents are therefore having to purchase water from tanker suppliers. Talking to the ADC, The Builder of Grand Square, Sachin Mirani, Square Feet, said, “ The water prob-
had ignored and avoided the discussion of the fees hike in the Management Council meet held in April, yet the MU was adamant on hiking the fees. Senate member Pradeep Sawant said, “Once the colleges have begun, the MU cannot suddenly hike the fees. While this issue is already facing opposition, the University can only hike the fees for the next academic year. The rules will not permit the MU to hike fees this year.” Even the top most committee and decision makers who will be finalizing the dees hike issue have claimed that the fees would not hike this year. Mahadev Jagtap, Management Council member, MU told the ADC: “The academic year has already started. Considering the rules laid down by the Universities Act, the fees cannot be
Helpless residents of Grand Square, Thane. lem is being tackled and things are moving fast, TMC and I are working and soon there will be a permanent solution. We have provided the residents with 7 bore-wells and individual Kent RO filters are installed in every house.” When contacted Thomas Sequeira, Chairman of Grand Square , said, “We have no water supply since the day we stepped in. The RO filters which are installed need continuous water supply and everyday we order for water tankers which costs us Rs.800 for a single tanker.
The builder has provided us 5 borewells but they can hardly provide water to three buildings. There is a chawl located just few meters away and they regularly receive water supply for 2 to 3 hours a day. We are frustrated and feel totally helpless as the Municipal Commissioner says that he has to find a permanent solution to the problem.” “We asked him to stop giving commencement certificates to builders if such a problem prevails. And the reply we got was that they cannot do anything and if they stop
issuing commencement certificates, property prices will increase,” he added. He further added that, “When we asked the water department for help they said that in order to install the water pipes they will have to first shift the drainage pipes to a lower level. This is a long and drawn out process and we are being totally neglected.” Talking to Aseem Gupta, Thane Municipal Commissioner, said, “I don't know about Grand Square specifically, but there are no water pipelines to supply water to the Ghodbunder area. We had made this known to the developers very clearly. We had taken up the issue with the government and just be“There are water pipelines just 200 metre away, we can get water tomorrow also if the TMC sanctions it. The builder is ready to pay the price for construction,” said Thomas Sequeira, Chairman of Grand Square.
Pipes to be used for water supply, dumped outside the complex premises. fore elections, it sanctioned the construction of the water pipelines. This is a huge project which would cost Rs.600 crore and would be completed over a span of 2 years. We are working towards it. However, some places in Ghodbunder might receive water supply in 6 to 7 months. The residents knew all of this before they bought the properties, and few developers have even laid water pipelines at their own expense.” However, talking about the latest developments, Thomas Sequeira, “On June 18, around 30 to 50 pipes were dumped outside the complex. There are pipes dumped in other areas as well and they are 12 inches in diametre. When we contacted the builder's office, they assured us that the water supply would be made available in July.”

DESPERATELY SAVING MONEY
03 Vishwanath Salian | ADC
Over the weekend (and for at least three weekends before that), the biggest stories in Mumbai have had to do with mass transportation. They have also been the source of the biggest shocks, whether it is disillusionment over the fact that Metro One looks dangerously close to being over-run by a manic passenger crowd, or the shock and awe occasioned by the astounding jump in season passes for the suburban traveler. Yesterday, the scene at CST had to be seen to be believed. Our photographer managed to take permission and gain a vantage point above the main concourse where he looked down upon hundreds (perhaps thousands) of local travelers determined to beat the massive jump in fares, scheduled to begin tomorrow. And so, in front of each ticket counter, long lines snaked on to the common area in front of platforms 1 to 4, curling round each other and spilling over. Depending upon what you were used to buying, you just upped the ante. So those buying quarterlies, bought half-yearlies, and those buying a pass every six months, went for an annual purchase. With literally thousands of rupees at stake, at this rate, the Indian Railways are not going to see a real jump in profits from the suburban section till next year!
FOR 50 years, 75-year-old Baburao Sitaprao, originally from the Konkan, has been running the canteen of the Parle Tilak Vidyalaya. He began around 1960 when a single batatawada used to cost 6 paise (one anna then). And no pav provided. Now the same batatawada along with pav costs Rs.8 (Rs.10 outside school). A samosa, coriander vadis and green pea pattice, all very Konkan and typical, are the other snacks he provides. But what is important is that although five decades have passed, neither the size nor the taste of Baburao’s food items has changed. What is the secret ? “In my canteen there is no scope for adulteration and there is no compromise with the cooking process. The potatoes are meticulously selected, meticulously mashed so there are no lumps. After spices are added, the potato balls are coated with a very thin layer of besan (gram flour). Then the batatawadas are fried till they are golden brown”. Probably this is the reason, the taste of Baburao’s batatawada lingers on in the mouths of
Pic by Raju Vernekar
Prices change, taste stays the same
And while on the subject of rising prices, what does one say to a green leaf cup holding 250 gm of purple jamuns, at Rs.50 for the lot. We counted the luscious berries and choked a bit when we realised that we had paid almost Rs.3 for one. There were 17 berries in the leaf cup. We counted. Lychees and jamuns – no difference.
Taking the Metro? Eewww

thousands of past and present students of the Parle Tilak Vidyalaya. Some of those settled abroad make it a point to visit his stall whenever they are in India. Not surprisingly, by now Baburao’s stall has figured in most of the English and Marathi national and state level dailies. In particular, journalists seem to love his fare!
IT is now official. The Mumbai Metro, that much-awaited mode of public transport bridging the gap between the Central and Western suburbs, is slowly becoming a stink bomb, much to the horror of those who envisioned it as a serious means of transport. Unlike the Monorail which has turned into a toy train, one that has lost its charm pretty fast! People flocking in their hundreds of thousands to get on board this recent marvel of Mumbai are leaving behind remarkable levels of effluvium, thanks to the fact that it is an enclosed, air-conditioned capsule, with none of the advantages of open windows like on a local train, absolute necessity in humid, sweat-drenched Mumbai.
Don't get taken in by the smiles and the flowers. This was the first day of the Metro and nothing like it is today.
In fact, the Metro is overcrowded, suffocating and stinking even during the so called 'non-peak' afternoon hours, so much so that our locals seem almost attractive in comparison. Plus there is the little matter of convenience. One such Metro enthusiast ruefully admits that perhaps his expectations were misplaced. “It takes me Rs.15 to get to the Metro station from my home in Ghatkopar, and then Rs.10 (for now) to get to Chakala, the stop closest to my work place. Then I spend another Rs.15 to get to my office. So its Rs.40 for one way travel. This means I spend Rs.80 every day to
get to and from the office. “On the other hand, if I take a rickshaw right up to my office, it costs me Rs.70 one way. But it's comfortable, and thanks to the Metro craze, there is hardly any traffic on the roads. I get to sit comfortably and most importantly, there is no stench that I have to tolerate.” In other words. He's done the math. While one can't stop people from boarding the Metro as and when they like, may we expect MMRDA and Reliance to come up with measures for stink-control on its pet project? Use of air fresheners for starters?

State BJP to appeal to Union Railway Minister A Afternoon Despatch & Courier
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JUNE 24, 2014
By Prashant Hamine
larmed over the possible backlash in the forthcoming assembly elections, state BJP leaders, led by Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Vinod Tawde, will call on Union minister for Railways Sadanand Gowda today. Speaking to newspersons here at his official residence near Mantralaya yesterday, he said that all the 10 Shiv Sena-BJP MPs from Mumbai and Thane will meet the Gowda and apprise him of the feelings of the
railway commuters. Meanwhile, Sena leader Sanjay Raut argued that the government ought to have discussed the fare hike issue with its allies. Commenting on the editorial in party mouthpiece 'Saamana' yesterday, which hoped that this would turn out to be the last fare hike, stated that there was no question of the Sena doing a Uturn on the issue. The Leader of Opposition discounted the belief that the fare hike would adversely impact the Sena-BJP-led Mahayuti alliance' fortunes, especially in Mumbai-Thane region. He said that because of the economic mess created by the previous Congress-led UPA regime, some tough eco-
nomic decisions are being forced on the Modi-led NDA government. Tawde admitted that the railway fare hike was unjust on people with fixed and low incomes. Tawde disclosed that the delegation comprising all the 10 MPs from the MumbaiThane belt, Union ministers Piyush Goyal, Smriti Irani, Prakash Javadekar and others will meet Gowda in New Delhi and apprise the Gowda that 65 lakh suburban commuters have voted for the Modi government. He said that, for the ordinary citizens, a hike in season tickets from Rs.115 to Rs.330 is a burden. Tawde added that he foresaw a satisfactory picture emerging out of the current fare
hike issue. Raut stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should explain to the country about this “bitter pill”. He added that the people are not used to digest bitter pills. He termed the rail fare hike as not a good start to the BJP's “Aache Din...” slogan. Meanwhile, the Saamana editorial questioned the Congress leaders now agitating over the rail fare hike, wanting to know where they were when the people were agitating over the food inflation. The editorial adds that the fare hike proves to be the last one and that the government should fulfill the expectations of the people on the issue.

T
he state unit of the Congress which hit the streets yesterday to protest against the BJP led NDA government's decision to hike rail fares has decided to intensify the agitation. The party has organised a rail blockade across the state tommorow (Wednesday). Speaking to reporters after
a meeting with party officebearers, the state Congress president Manikrao Thakre said, “We demand a roll-back of the fares immediately, failing which we will launch a rail roko (blocking trains) agitation across Maharashtra.” The meeting also resolved that if the central government failed to heed the anti-hike sentiments of the masses, the Congress will continue its

food to the BMC-run Baalwadi (Nursery). The complainant and his wife had a contract with the Child Development office regarding supply of food to the Baalwadi between 2013 and 2015 at a specific price. But the accused lady threatened the complainant's wife that she would send a negative report to the collector's office and thus asked her for Rs 22,000 per month on the food bill as a commission. In the first year, the complainant did pay Rs 27,000 to the accused as her commission, but when she approached the couple this year, the two lodged a complaint at the ACB office, sources informed.
agitation. Wednesday's agitation will see rail blockades at major railway stations in Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune, Aurangabad and other parts of the state. Earlier, during the day, Thakre and scores of Congress leaders including Ministers, Parliamentarians, legislators and other elected representatives traveled without ticket from Chhatrapati Shivaji Ter-
minus (CST) to Thane to protest the hike. They also staged noisy demonstrations at the CST, Thane and other major railway stations to press the demand for the rollback of the rail fare hike, which they said would deal a severe blow to domestic budgets. Similar agitation has been planned today by the Congress party near Malad railway station.

Another fire at Mantralaya...Almost! By A Special Correspondent
Y
es, it was about to happen again, but it got averted. Exactly two years and three days after Mantralaya was gutted in a major fire, the state headquarters' annex building re-lived the horror yesterday when a short circuit in the evening caused panic among the employees. The small fire was controlled immediately and as a result no one was injured in this incident and no major damage to the property was reported. According to a senior government official, a power switch between the first floor offices of the Minister of State for Treble Development, Rajendra Gavit, and the principal secretary, social justice R.D. Shinde, malfunctioned at around 3.45 pm. This resulted in a spark that burnt electric cables. Soon thick smoke filled the corridor. Due to inadequate ventilation, employees and the visitors got frightened due to suffocation. This caused panic and employees were evacuated in a couple of minutes. Fire brigade personnel, which have been posted permanently after the June 21, 2012 incident, swung into action and controlled the fire before it could spread. However, the police officials have an altogether different version of what happened. According to them, the spark was because of the work being done by the PWD electrical department, which others mistakenly interpreted as a short circuit and thereby fire. However, Mantralaya stated that the smoke was a major problem because the corridors don't have enough ventilation.

Director held in molestation case; granted bail By Zuber Ansari
B
ollywood director Subhash Kapoor, who was accused of molesting actress Geetika Tyagi at her residence in suburban Versova, was today arrested in the case, police said. “The molestation case was filed against him by actress Geetika Tyagi on April 14 this year,” said ACP Versova region Samadhan Dhanedhar. The 'Jolly LLB' fame filmmaker, Kapoor was produced before an Andheri court which granted him bail, the officer informed. Kapoor's associate, Danish Raza, who is said to be a scriptwriter, is still wanted in this case, the ACP added.
Tyagi had filed a complaint against Kapoor at the Versova Police Station in April alleging that he and his associate had in May 2012 come to her residence and inappropriately touched her. Tyagi claimed that Kapoor was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, police said. Tyagi also alleged that Kapoor defamed her using various media platforms over a period of time, the police said. The duo was accordingly booked under IPC sections 354 (outraging a woman's modesty), 501 (Printing or engraving matter) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).

Fare hearing today The Bombay High Court will hear a couple of Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on Tuesday against the new hiked rail fares. Mumbai Grahak Panchayat, a consumer interest group, filed a PIL on Monday. Shirish Deshpande of MGP said the PIL focuses on an urgent interim relief against the huge hike in season tickets for suburban commuters. There will be a demand for interim protection or a stay against such a steep hike which is pegged at over 180 percent of the present fare. The other PIL is by Ketan

In all, we had 12 teams of BEST and Mahanagar staff. From today we will bring in more teams so that the work is completed at the earliest,” he added. khushboo.m.panjabi@gmail.com
Tirodkar, a former journalist who has sought a roll back on the hike. “The suburban trains are the lifeline for nearly 20 million people in Mumbai and nearby areas. The three lines – Western, Central and Harbour – ferry over 70 lakh people daily,” Tirodkar's PIL said adding that the revised fares, effective June 25, would make a second class monthly season costing Rs.85, now cost Rs.150. The new rates are potentially financially crippling for the common people, he said. A first class monthly season pass worth Rs.795 would soon cost Rs.1930.

2 more witnesses identify Salman More trouble in the court for Salman Khan as two more witnesses identify actor in the 2002 hit-and-run case at Sessions Court on Monday By Philip Varghese
W
hile deposing in court on Monday, prosecution witness Ramashray Pandey told the court that he saw people running towards the spot of the incident on the night of September 21, 2002, when he came out of a dairy shop. “People who were crushed by the Toyota Land Cruise were crying for help, which others were trying to
move but failed in doing so. The left door of the Land Cruiser got jammed. The situation on the spot was very chaotic and people were throwing stones at the car,” said Pandey. On the day of the accident, actor Salman Khan was allegedly driving a Toyota Land Cruiser that ran over a group of people sleeping on the pavement outside a bakery in Bandra. One person was killed and four others were injured in the accident. Last year, on December 5, the court had ordered a fresh trial after charges against the actor were enhanced to culpable homicide not amounting to
murder. After several delays, the retrial began on April 29. Pandey was watching the whole scene from a distance of 15 feet and did not notice anybody in the front seat. “I did see Salman getting down from the car while late constable Ravindra Patil, who has earlier identified that the actor was drunk at the time of accident, was standing near the car. The car was in a very bad condition and hence a crane was called in to remove it. No medical help was provided to the victims till then and they were sent to the hospital only after a considerable time was wasted in removing the crashed vehicle,” Pandey told Sessions Judge D.W. Deshpande. Meanwhile, Rizwan, manager of a bar in Juhu, identified Salman in the court, saying that the actor had come to the restaurant with friends hours before his car was involved in the accident. However, said he was not sure whether the Bollywood actor had consumed alcohol. “Salman's group had ordered drinks and snacks, but I am not sure whether Salman had consumed the drinks himself, as the order had been taken by a waiter and not me. As the restaurant was full, Salman and his brother Sohail Khan were standing in front of the service counter. After some time, they occupied a table and ordered drinks. I saw Salman holding a glass, but it was full with a colourless liquid like water,” Rizwan said. The prosecution's case is that the actor had consumed alcohol in Rain Bar along with his friends and was allegedly under the influence of liquor on the day of the accident.

Bhandari asks concerned minister to take serious note of the weather phenomenon's impact on monsoon, calls for all party consultations to tackle situation By Prashant Hamine
S
tate BJP spokesperson Madhav Bhandari has in a letter addressed to Minister for Rehabilitation and Disaster Mitigation Dr Patangrao Kadam yesterday urged the latter to take serious note of the possible adverse impact of weather phenomenon El Nino on this year's monsoon. Meanwhile, the data released by the Water Resources department yesterday paints a grim picture of things to come. According to the department there is just 20 per cent of water stock in all the 2,441 irrigation dams in the state. Even in the case of deployment of water tankers in the state, government has deployed 1,454 tankers in 1,464 villages and 3,687 hamlets as of now. The state BJP spokesperson drew the attention of the Indian Meteoriological Depart-
ment (IMD) to yesterday's prediction for this year's monsoon in which it has clearly stated that the weather phenomenon of El Nino could affect the monsoon. Even the Australian weather bureau has given a warning to this effect. Bhandari stated that in 20112012 the state faced drought, while in 2013-14 the Rabi crop was damaged due to hailstorms and many parts of the state have been consistently facing water scarcity. Bhandari stated that the phenomenon of El Nino leads to less and infrequent rainfall with increased number of dry spells in between. He added that the Kharif crop in the state is entirely dependent on the monsoon. He urged Kadam to take serious note of the weather forecast put out by IMD and weather experts and call all the political parties, NGOs and experts for consultations on the issue and begin the process of taking steps to combat the scenario arising out of the possibility of a failed monsoon.

aking cognisance of the ADC report titled 'Malaria Attack' published on Saturday, June 21, the BMC's health department sent a team to survey Amar Kunj, the building in question and take stock of the situation there. “On Saturday itself, a team was sent to that building and a survey of the area was conducted. We also did a door-todoor survey. There were a few cases of fever. One resident named Sanjay Bhide had the history of getting frequent bouts of malaria. But we will have to investigate to know the reason for these recurrent bouts. We have to find out whether he is a chronic carrier T

magine having fallen prey to malaria six times in four years! Difficult to believe? But this has happened with 61-year-old Sanjay Bhide, a resident of Amar Kunj building at Dadar. Sanjay was admitted to Susrusha hospital at Dadar on June 14 when he started experiencing severe giddiness and hallucinations. “I had been experiencing extreme weakness and fever during evenings for a week. And then on June 14 I started feeling giddy and started hallucinating. This brought back my previous experience of malaria so me and my wife rushed to the hospital only to be diagnosed with malaria for the sixth time in four years,” said Sanjay who was discharged on June 19 with strict instructions from doctors that he needs to take utmost care of his health and make sure that he uses mosquito repellents all the time. “Such frequent bouts of malaria at my age is not good. My liver has already started getting affected,” said Sanjay whose wife Sannidha and daughter Ananya have also had malaria this season. While Sanjay's case might seem like a rare one, for residents of Amar Kunj building which has 22 flats with a average family size of four, being affected by malaria during the four to five months around monsoon, during monsoon and post monsoon, is not new. “For the last four years, during this time, at least 75 per cent of our the people get malaria. Every member of every family has had malaria every year during this period, at least once,” said Surekha Malwankar, who herself has suffered from malaria three times in the last three years. “I got malaria two times within a gap of six months,” said Kumud

Amar Kunj building which is in G North ward on Savarkar Marg near Chaityabhoomi, is close to Krishna Kunj, the residence of MNS chief Raj Thackeray. Manohar Joshi also stays in the same area, pretty close to Amar Kunj. The residents of Amar Kunj in jest say that the building should be renamed Malaria Kunj because it seems like the hub of malaria. Now the residents, who strangely, did not take up this issue with the BMC till date, are thinking of sending a formal letter to the concerned officials. “We have informally spoken to representatives of our area but never given anything formally in writing. But now that the cases are on a rise especially since the last four years, we might ask the committee members to do something about it,” said Sanjay. Satyaprakash Hatalkar, Secretary of Amar Kunj said, “The committee will look into the matter and decide what has to be done.” Dr. Mangala Kumud Kedari at her residence in Amar Kunj building in Dadar. There are so many factors that have to be taken into consideration. We also asked for blood samples of people who had fever but they refused to do so. So we don't know if they are actual cases of malaria. I have asked the BMC doctor at the health post there to get more details about the cases in that building. As of now, that area is not on our list of high risk area for malaria. But we are doing the needful and necessary investigations will be done,” said Dr. Mangala Gomare, deputy executive health officer, BMC.
MBMC forms committee to allot transit flats Gets possession of 632 flats in Mira Road for allotting them to people living in rickety structures By Suresh Golani
A
five-member committee has been constituted by the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) which will accept applications from people living in dilapidated structures
and select beneficiaries for the allotment of transit accommodations on a Leave and License basis. Under the Rental Housing Scheme (RHS), around 3,800 units in nine major projects located in Mira Road and Kashimira are to be made available by private construction companies to MMRDA. While a total of 1,900 flats will be handed over to the MBMC in the coming years, 632 units ad-measuring 269 square feet have been handed over to the PWD department. “Following a joint inspection with MMRDA officials,
we have taken possession of 632 units which will be used as transit accommodation for those people belonging to dilapidated structures in the twin-city that will be demolished,” confirmed civic chief Suresh Kakani. Headed by deputy civic chief Dr. Sambhaji Panpatee, the fivemember committee will comprise city engineer Shivaki Barkund, executive engineer Deepak Khambit and social welfare officer Deepali Powar. As per the disbursement norms set by the General Body, beneficiaries will have to pay a monthly rent of
Rs.3,000 for which a threeyear lease deed will be executed which can be extended for another two years. “It is a much-needed relief for people who are rendered homeless. Accommodation will be provided till their original buildings are redeveloped or till they find other accommodations,” said MBMC Mayor Catlin Pereira who had been regularly following up on the issue with the higher-ups. The revenue that will be collected from the rents here will be utilised in the maintenance of the buildings.

Ponder awhile... “There is a higher court than courts of justice and that is the court of conscience. It supercedes all other courts.” – Mahatma Gandhi
Ministers with criminal record I
MMEDIATELY after taking office as prime minister, Narendra Modi had a brief encounter with all the bureaucrats. He impressed upon them the need for maintaining transparency and for avoiding corrupt practices in administration. The Congress immediately responded by saying he was terrorising the hapless secretaries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has let it be known his government will be just clean and good. He appears to be, however, completely turning a blind eye to existing actualities in his government. He cannot be unaware that there are criminals, persons with criminal charges against them, in his government. As much as 30 per cent of his ministers have criminal cases against them. The cases are under trial: The ministers are still not convicted and unless the cases are completed and conviction takes place, they are regarded as innocent. The cases against the ministers attract heavy fines and many years in jail. The charges against them include murder, assault, cheating, kidnapping, rape, etc. A minister is alleged to be involved in a chain-snatching case. Uma Bharti, a cabinet minister, has a case related to her involvement in an attempt to murder. Gopinath Munde, who died in a car accident recently, had a kidnapping case against him. During the election campaign, Narendra Modi had declared that candidates with criminal charges against them should not be given tickets. Evidently he does not practice what he preaches. If he was really serious about this issue, he could have kept MPs with criminal records out of the cabinet. He has given them important portfolios. The rape cases in which a minister was involved came to light when he was summoned by a court. There was widespread demand that he should resign. The BJP, however, extended strong, total support to the accused minister. The situation being what it is, can we expect just clean, good governance?

EMOCRACY and personal liberty should never be taken for granted. This is a warning that the imposition of the Emergency gave 39 years ago when the then prime minister, Mrs Indira Gandhi, furtively extinguished the lights of freedom on the night of June 25-26 to save her skin. The Allahabad High Court had disqualified her as an MP for six years for using official machinery during her election campaign. Instead of stepping down, she suspended the constitution, imposed Press censorship and constricted personal freedom. More than 1,00,000 people were detained without trial and all the Opposition members, including Jayaprakash Narayan who had led the movement against her corrupt government, were put behind bars. The worst was that she destroyed the institutions which still have not regained their health.

that the government has circulated 'a cock and bull story' is understandable because they have given years of their lives to work for the welfare of people in rural areas. Disparagingly, they are called jholawalas. This tag has been linked with them because they carry shoulder bags which have grams, a frugal meal for their long sojourns in remote parts. The allegation against them that their protests or agitations have stalled economic growth carries no conviction because they are conscientious objectors against big dams, nuclear power stations and the likes.
Transparent government The lesson to learn is to have a transparent government which can rule within the precincts of the constitution. A strong government means an effective government, not one person rule, which negates the very parliamentary democracy that we have preferred to the presidential form. People are the masters and anything done to silence their say goes against the very grain of our republic’s democratic, pluralistic and egalitarian ideals. Those who violated these principles were punished when elections were held in 1977. Even a tall person like Mrs Gandhi was defeated at the polls. To know all this is important so that it does not happen again. Yet some signs are starting to be visible to remind us of those days when we see the working of the governments. One of its wings, the Intelligence Bureau (IB) has leaked out certain passages of a report which alleges that the activities of Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) have brought down the rate of growth by two to three per cent. I cannot blame Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government because the report was obviously prepared during the Congress rule of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. But top bureaucrats are responsible in putting across such information that tarnishes the image of those who are working at the grassroots. Some of the names mentioned in the report are people of integrity and I, as an activist, know them personally. Their defence
BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar Take Medha Patkar who is associated with the opposition to the Narmada Dam. No doubt, she had the World Bank loan for the project cancelled, but her objection was that you could not displace people without giving them alternative accommodation. The opposition to the dam became so strong at one time that the government appointed the Narmada Tribunal which said in its judgement that the people should be given an equivalent site of land and a rehabilitation grant six months before they are uprooted. Gujarat, which is the main beneficiary, took the responsibility of rehabilitating the displaced persons. Initially land was given for land, but subsequently cash awards were offered. Many took it, but today they are mere labourers because the cash has not lasted for long. The new announcement that the Narmada Dam would be built to its original height and that the gates would be installed amounts to the betrayal of the understanding given that until the uprooted were rehabilitated the dam’s height would not be raised. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, hailing from Gujarat, may not have anything to do

with the decision that the Narmada authorities have made. But he is bound to be accused of giving his blessing for the additional work. I recall that when the agitation against the dam was at its height several Gujaratis told me that the dam was their Kashmir. “If you do not allow the dam to come up, we shall be forced to take up guns as the separatists in Kashmir are doing.”
Blame on NGOs The story of nuclear power station at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu is no different. Rightly, the people living in that area complained that they did not want a nuclear plant in their midst and they gave the example of Fukushima in Japan where the radioactive nuclear fuel leaked into surrounding areas. Still the plant has come up and is working to its full capacity with all the hazards that the inhabitants in that area face. The point which emerges from such projects is that the government cannot take people for granted and that there is more to life than ends justifying the means as they did in Communist China or Communist Russia. But Mahatma Gandhi’s India was different. Of course, development is important but it has to be balanced against the adverse fallout affecting every individual. India’s first prime minister, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, did point out that there were two ways available to build the future India: Communist dictatorship or democratic transparency and accountability. He said that India had chosen the path of consensus, which is an essential ingredient of a democratic system. I personally think that the costs of the project go up and the delay in completion takes place because of red tapeism and corruption at every tier of government, right up to the minister. The effort to put the blame on NGOs is bound to go awry because the media today is vigilant to expose the scams even at the highest level. The Manmohan Singh government was notorious for that. One scandal after another would tumble out of its cupboard. All the guilty have escaped punishment because there is no accountability in the system. In fact, my fear is that the atmosphere of paranoia is being built because some undemocratic steps are in the offing. I hope they do not end up with another Emergency, another era where dissent would be construed as anti-national. have mercy and service. For man must be regarded as God. I tell you the truth: There is nothing wrong in your being in the world. But you must direct your mind towards God. If you say, 'I am a sinner', eternally, you will remain a sinner to all eternity. You ought rather to repeat, 'I am not bound, I am not bound. Who can bind me? I am the son of God, the king of kings.' He is truly a man to whom money is only a servant; but, on the other hand, those who do not know how to make a proper use of it, hardly deserve to be called men. To become great one must be humble. The tree laden with fruit always bends low. So if you wish to be great, be lowly and meek. Rain water never stands on high ground, but runs down to the lowest level. So also the mercy of God remains in the hearts of the lowly, but drains off from those of the vain and the proud. The ego that asserts, 'I am the servant of God' is the characteristic of the true devotee. It is the ego of Vidya (Knowledge), and is called the 'ripe' ego.

Steep railway fare hike shocking indeed
to improve the quality of service and safety standard nor expansion of its network. Taking recourse to subsidy is undesirable in view of huge fiscal deficit. The reputed international credit rating agency-Moody's has stated recently that high fiscal deficit is exposing India to shocks. In order to put the 'seriously ill' Indian economy back on fast track quickly, Namo had to take the unpopular decision of fare hike. — Prof. K.H. Karkera, via e-mail
NEVER BEFORE: A hike of this scale is unprecedented in the history of the national railway. THE Indian railway fare hike in particular about the Mumbai suburban section indeed gave a great shock to those 7.5 million daily commuters out of a city population of 14 million. It is not although surprising to read about this hike as the existing fare structure was certainly affordable although it went through minor intermittent hikes in between. However. Some of the commuters are of the opinion that if could have been phased out , then the affordability could not have been jeopardised so badly as it had happened now . It has acted as a bomb for some long distance commuters who use this life line from the extended suburbs for their livelihood. Many are planning to degrade them to travel by class II instead of class I to cut costs, which would inconvenience them considerably as the peak hour commuter density is just killing. The frustration for the commuters is that with the rise in fare which is double in some cases, the travel conditions would remain the same. Hope the railways look into this aspect seriously and upgrade the railway infrastructure to justify the hike at the earliest. — Bikram Banerjea, via e-mail
IN the face of mounting criticism not just from the opposition, but from its own allies as well, the Modi government is trying hard to come up with a rational justification for the recent steep hike in railway fares. Arun Jaitley points out that the railways can no longer sustain the huge losses it has been incurring over the past several years. It is true tat there is a huge gap between revenue and expenditure, but what no politician has had the courage to admit that much of the expenditure is wasteful and can be curtailed if there is political will. The railways are grossly over staffed and moreover, many of the employees especially at the senior level, perform only a fraction of the duties they are paid for. But no action is taken because of the vote bank politics that is the scourge of our democracy. Jaitley's statement that increased fares will

help India achieve a world class railway system is laughable. — Firoze Hirjikaka, Colaba
THE new railway minister, Sadanand Gowda, lost no time in stating that he was only implementing the proposal of the UPA's Mallikarjuna Kharge to hike the railway fares and freight charges made in February but stalled at the last minute. One wonders why the NDA government should followup the previous government's proposal when it had mercilessly attacked everything done by it during its election campaign. The hikes do not stand to any reason especially when the regular budget is due in a few days. When the common man is already suffering from high food inflation with mutter (green peas) selling at Rs.100 a kilo, this steep hike will add to his burden substantially. The railways have never been a losing public service and so it is baffling why the fares had to be increased. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane
THE Modi Sarkar has taken charge of governance when the previous ‘Subsidy government’ has left nothing but a huge heap of all round economic messes including the necessary hike in railway fares and freights, just to woo the voters for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. But yet I believe that the railway minister should not have been so hasty in hiking them and that too with such a high percentage. The hike should now be reduced at least by 20 per cent in the fares as well as in freight. No doubt, the need of the hour is, necessary steps to reform the economic conditions of the nation, but they should be reasonable and balanced. Or the people will consider them as undesired and untimely ‘too bitter medicines.’ — Hansraj Bhat, Borivali
THE recent railway fare hike has derailed everybody. A few limericks jump up and down in my mental compartment. Here goes...
The wife, pulled the chain no traveling by train take my tricycle, she said along with misal/ usal in the bread the fare hike may give you a sprain fourteen percent may give you dysentery in the house, then no entry to office, why don’t you jog? your arteries will unclog you will also get a medal for gallantry prices of essentials will rise don't ask for biryaani rice eat only lady finger but dare touch a lady finger the government's decision is unwise — Altaf H Ladiwala, Bandra
NARENDRA Modi's 'Achche din aane wale hai' campaign was a hoax call as Modi led government delivers its first knock-out punch on people who voted him to power within days of taking oath as PM. The 14 per cent rail hike is a body blow to the people in general and suburban commuters in particular as our local train fare is set to double from coming week. The blame on fare hike would be passed on to the previous government's poor administration but why are poor commuters penalised for bad governance of political parties at the Centre? The steep rail fare hike including freight fare hike would have cascading effect on inflation and would fuel inflation further instead of bringing it down. One expected the Modi government to solve problems from the grassroots but this government took the easy route out to raise fares to increase revenues. — S.N. Kabra, Goregaon
NAMO has mustered courage to give the first 'bitter pill' to the people in the form of railway fare hike - both passenger and freight. He has taken this most unpleasant decision risking his popularity. But, the fare hike is inevitable. Many of the railway projects are stuck in the middle due to financial crunch. The cash-trapped Indian Railways could neither go for modernisation
KAMAL R Khan's staff asking for pay rise: Staff: Sir, please increase our salary as you know that the railway fare has been more than doubled. KRK: You see the fare has been increased by BJP Government and not me, if you want you can ask the government and not me. Staff: Sir, but we are working for you and not the government. KRK: But you people have elected the BJP Government and not me. Staff: Sir, be fair and forget about everything please do something. KRK: How can I forget, I remember everything. Staff: Sir, but you forgot one thing, you forgot to leave this country if BJP wins? KRK: CHUUP...! — Yogesh R Bhavsar, Dahisar
STEEP hike by Modi government both in passenger and freight fares will no doubt push inflation to higher levels on one side and on the other will burden common man further. People who were looking for respite from spiraling prices are dismayed the way Modi government has pushed the price button. It's really bad that Govt has chosen the excuse of blaming previous government for allocating budget resources based on this price increase. Railway minister should have been more candid and honest rather than blaming previous government and should have waited to implement it during budget. 'Achche din kab aur kiske aayenge, Modi se na poocha na woh batayenge. Common man is left high and dry as usual and it's a reality. — Ashok Goswami, via e-mail
NARENDRA Modi's government has given a maiden blow, I would say, to Mumbaikars by exhorbitantly increasing the suburban rail fares too, alongwith the fares for long distance travel and freight. It seems "Acche Din aaye hain"...For the government, and not for Mumbaikars! I do agree that subsidies must be cut and fares need to be increased to meet the costs and to provide better facilities and expand infrastructure operations. The increase in the fares of long distance trains will not be felt much, as people, by and large undertake such journies once or twice in a year. And the facilities are entirely different from that are (not) available in the local or suburban trains of Mumbai. The government must now reconsider the extent of increase of suburban rail fare increase. I am not saying don’t increase but do it with some reason and logic and in a phased manner. — S. Krishna Kumar, Dombivli

It’s a real pity The hapless Campa Cola residents, being honest taxpayers and peace loving citizens, are offering resistance to the demolition squad in a democratic manner. What would have been the scenario, if in their place, an unauthorised slum colony had sprung up? ou wake up at the crack of dawn every day, drink a glass of warm water, practice yoga for half an hour, eat breakfast and then set out to go to work. You eat several small meals throughout the day and in the evening, pack in half an hour of an intense workout — that would be the ideal routine to stay fit and healthy, ideal being the operative word, because with our busy lives, ideal is the last thing that our fitness regimes are. But, staying fit is extremely important, so you must find the time. Instead of telling you what you should be doing, we tell you what residents of our city are doing so that you can pick up a tip or two. Read on as we find out how the people of Mumbai lead their busy lives, while staying fit at the same time.
>> From yoga to sports, find out how Mumbai stays fit
Making the Most of everything “In a city like ours, where we all lead busy lives, we have to give up on something in order to stay fit. For me, it’s usually my sleep! My child sleeps late and so, I wake up before he does so that I can go to the gym and be back before I have to get him ready for preschool. Sundays are a day to rest, but I usually take my child for a swim and that way I get a little extra exercise as well. On days when I miss my morning gym session, I make sure to play some active games with my child. This way, I squeeze a little cardio into my routine.” — karishma khanna turakhia, 35-years-old, design consultant
follow a plan “No matter how busy my day is, I make sure that I spend at least half an hour doing some physical activity. I recently started following this 30-day fitness home workout plan that includes cardio, light resistance band training and stomach exercises. I prefer to do this first thing in the morning. I’m also watching my diet, so I avoid food that is not healthy.” — shayne D’souza, 29-years-old, media professional Continued on pg 14 «

I find that mornings are the best time to get some exercise, as my mind is fresh and I don’t have any thoughts/ worries that are usually present at the end of a hectic day. To ensure that I don’t miss out on my daily dose of exercise, I maintain a strict sleeping routine, where I wake up at the same time every day, no matter what time I go to bed the night before. For the most part, I try to sleep at the same time every night and I eat my meals on time, in smaller portions.” — Sharon D’Souza, 55-years-old, civil engineer

Thanks to the city’s slow moving traffic, I go through a CD or two of good classical music, which helps me de-stress. At home, I try to help in the kitchen, which is a good stress buster. « Know more BuBBle tea Bubble tea, the fruity tea-based beverage, with chewy tapioca beads is a refreshing change from ice-tea and milkshake. But it isn’t the healthiest drink. Shirley Mistry tells you more
>> Butter sticks make the process of applying butter easier, so you don’t have to go through the trouble of cutting through cold butter
What it is A Taiwanese creation, bubble tea, also known as pearl tea or Boba tea, is a green tea based drink with a sweetener and chewy tapioca balls, that has the texture of gummy bears. The bubble tea is sometimes combined with milk and is called pearl milk tea. To add another element of interest, most vendors add a fruit flavouring to the bubble tea as well.
health factor However tempting bubble tea might sound, its not as healthy as it seems. While green tea and milk have several health properties, including antioxidants, vitamins, calcium, minerals and anti-inflammatory properties, the tapioca pearls that are the centre of attention in any good bubble tea are packed with carbohydrates — not the kind that provide you with dietary fibre or aid with digestion, but the kind that you get from processed flour. A quarter cup of tapioca, which is the quantity in one glass of bubble tea, has around 140 calories in itself. Add the fruit flavouring and sugar to the tapioca and one serving will set you back around 400 calories.
Make it healthier While you can’t do anything about the calories in the tapioca bubbles, opt for skimmed milk or no milk at all. Also, if you are making the tea at home, use fresh fruit purée rather than a bottled syrup.

f you’re tired of spilling sauce every time you try to wrap spaghetti around your fork, or want to avoid the hassle of hacking at a frozen bar of butter to scrape off the tiny bit that you need for breakfast every morning, these inventions are for you! They might seem a little strange, but as you read about them, you will agree that they are really useful. Sadly, not all of these are easily available, but you can search for them on international retail sites that ship to India.
This is perhaps the most well-known from this list of products. The plastic case keeps bananas from getting bruised. A banana guard will let you carry the nutritionallyrich fruit in your bag, without having to worry about it becoming a pulpy mess. It is easily available online as well as off line.

This is one of our favourites! Think of a normal glue stick or lipstick and replace it with butter. You see what we are getting at? The butter stick allows you to spread butter over a piece of bread just like you would spread glue over a piece of paper. It is easy to get a thin, consistent layer of butter and you don’t have to wait several minutes for your butter to soften either. A similar product is butter spray, which is available in India on retail websites such as www.healthkart.com.
There is not enough information available about this, but a company called Tempra Technology has developed technology that allows containers to heat up their contents at the press of a button. The company has already introduced ready-to-eat meals in such containers. The same company is also behind a self-cooling can, which just like the self-heating containers, and can cool a drink in under a minute! Apart from being convenient, the technology is also promoted as one that can reduce the consumption of energy.

There is no way to look prim and proper in the middle of an intense workout, but you can abide by basic gym etiquette, so that even if you are grunting like a pig, you don’t end up behaving like one at the gym, says Shirley Mistry
G
oing to the gym should be all about getting a leaner, fitter and stronger body. However, while you may have whittled your gym routine down to one that offers you the best results, you may be committing some serious blunders when it comes to gym etiquette. Read on to find out where you may be going wrong.
throughout your reps. Not only is this annoying, it is very distracting for everyone else. Focus on working on your breathing technique and channel your energy towards doing an extra set instead!
DoN’t StaND iN the way While you may be looking for the perfect song to work out to on your iPod, don’t stand right in the middle of the gym floor while you skim through your playlist. You are just hampering other people’s pace and are literally a roadblock at the gym. Also, halting repeatedly brings your heart rate down and reduces the efficiency of your workout.
No, you CaNNot Call DiBS
No Chit Chat
Dropping your hand towel to block a seat may work in a local train, but you cannot use this technique to reserve machines at the gym! Wait for your turn to use a machine and work in other areas if the machine that you want to use is occupied. Not only is reserving a machine off putting, it is unfair to the other members.
Chatting with your friend in the changing room is alright, but trying to catch up with each other while running on adjacent treadmills isn’t! No one wants to hear about your holiday in Seychelles, especially if you are shouting out to each other so that you can be heard over the machines. Keep to yourself when you are at the gym, as idle chit-chat can be a major irritant and pose a distraction to everyone who is working out around you.
Sweaty PawS You may not realise it, but your palms, back and legs can sweat profusely when you work out. So, after you are done using a machine, make sure that you wipe the sweat off, or call a helper who will disinfect it, instead of leaving sweat marks behind. You wouldn’t want to use a damp machine, so remember to extend the courtesy to others.
BaN the SelFie Mirrors in gyms exist for a reason — so that you can correct your stance and posture while working out, to avoid injury. If you stop to take a selfie at every machine in the gym, leave your phone at home. You might be excited to show off your toned body, but the last thing members working out at a gym want to see is a stranger clicking pictures of his chiselled abs or pouting at the mirror for a Snapchat update. Save the photography for when you are out with friends and use the mirrors to improve your technique instead.
DoN’t hog the ShowerS Showering at a gym is all about getting a quick cleanse before you leave, not about taking a leisurely bath as you sing along to your favourite song. So, keep your showers at the gym really short and don’t let your rinse go on for any longer than ten minutes. Also, you and your gym-buddy may be comfortable enough with each other to talk across stalls as you shower, but remember that you are creeping everyone else out! Save the gossip for a post-workout smoothie.
Say No to gruNtiNg Yes, you are quite the hunk if you can lift the heaviest weight your gym has to offer, but you don’t need to announce it to the world by grunting
« Know more: Loose the armpit fat
While we all worry about the fat on our legs, stomach and thighs, we tend to ignore fat that appears on a very common area of our body — our armpits! Yamini Walia tells you about a few exercises that can help you reduce your armpit fat
A
rmpit fat is excess fat that settles in the area where your chest meets your arms. This pops out when you wear sleeveless clothes and can look unsightly, especially during the summer. While it is usually ignored, it is not going to decrease on its own. To burn armpit fat, you need to exercise as much as you do to tone your legs, arms and stomach. Your routine needs to include exercises that focus on your chest, shoulders and arms. These will help!
Chest Flys: Chest flys work on the front of your armpit area and are done while lying on your back, either on the floor, on a bench, or on a stability ball. Chest flys require you to hold a set of dumbbells above your chest with your arms extended and your palms facing each other. You then need to separate the weights by lowering the dumbbells to your sides until your upper arms are parallel to the floor. Do at least two to three sets of eight to 12 repetitions.
Push-ups: Push-ups are the best way to loose armpit fat as they emphasise problem areas. While doing push-ups, push yourself back to the starting point when your chest is one or two inches above the floor. Stick to three to five sets, of eight to 12 repetitions.
Pilates: Pilates are also a great way to reduce this unwanted fat. Make sure to work the muscles around your arms on all levels to get the desired results. You should work above your head, out in front of you, behind and include pushing and pulling. Pilates will definitely help to tone this trouble area.
Strength training: Exercises such as bench presses, lunges, squats, bent-over rows and crunches will help reduce armpit fat. You can also try lateral raises, with a rotation as part of your strength training routine. This exercise specifically focuses on your arms, chests and shoulders. Finish two to three sets of eight to twelve repetitions for best results. Cardio: Cardio is the best way to reduce fat all over your body, including your armpit fat. To target your armpits, choose cardio exercises that engage your upper body such as a rowing machine, an elliptical trainer or take a boxing class. Even pumping your arms back and forth while jogging will help.

Ear woEs Cleaning your ears with Q-tips or ear-buds is one of the most widely used ways to get wax out. But, did you know that using ear-buds is actually dangerous? Dev Goswami & Rhea Dhanbhoora help you clear out the wax and dirt build-up from your ears in a safe and effective manner remove the cotton ball and sprinkle 56 drops of water into your ear. This helps flush out the wax as well as the oil. Hold a towel to your ear and tilt your head so that the ear you put the oil into is facing downward. Let gravity do its job and allow the water to drain out. Repeat with the other ear.
With saline solUtion Mix ½ tsp of salt with ½ a cup of warm water; till the salt has dissolved completely. Now, using a dropper or a cotton ball, pour a few drops of the solution into your ear. Keep your head tilted, with the affected ear facing up, so that the salt solution reaches the wax. After a few minutes, tilt your head in the opposite direction and allow the solution to drain out. is not clearing up even after a few tries, it’s best to visit a doctor/ ENT specialist. Sometimes, the wax is so deeply set in your ear that regular methods do not work and you will need expert attention. The doctor might either prescribe or administer an over-the-counter solution that will help flush out the ear wax.
Dos anD Don’ts Before cleaning your ears, make sure that you don’t have an ear infection. Cleaning out ear wax when your ear is infected can perforate your eardrum! Surprisingly, ear wax actually protects you from infections. l While you can safely use ear cleaning solutions at home, remember not to spray anything in your ears. This should only be done by a professional. l
Several people still subscribe to the notion that they can get rid of ear wax by visiting a roadside ear cleaner. But this is extremely dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. l While it’s important to keep your ears dry after you play a water sport, swim or even take a long bath, don’t poke your towel into your ears. Gently shake your head from one side to the other and if you must, use a blow dryer to dry them out. Remember to keep the dryer at a safe distance and at a minimal speed. l Ear candling, another popular method to remove ear wax, should be eradicated completely! The procedure, performed with a lit candle, does nothing to remedy the situation and, in fact, can often make it worse. l Even if the wax is causing itchiness, never scratch your ear! It is especially dangerous if you use a sharp object. l
regnancy is one of the happiest phases in a woman’s life, but it can also be the most uncomfortable. Hormonal changes affect your veins and your blood volume increases. The pressure of the baby’s head in your pelvic region can compress the veins of the groin (iliac veins) and obstruct the blood flow to your legs. This often results in swelling, discomfort and the formation of varicose veins. Compression stockings, which are based on a simple mechanical principle of wrapping your leg in an elastic garment, can help avoid these problems. Graduated compression is the most effective way to prevent edema or swelling and also helps promote better blood circulation. Wearing compression stockings during your pregnancy prevents blood from pooling in the veins and reduces the risk of an elevated heart rate in both the mother and her child. By compressing the limb with graduated compression, which is strongest at the ankle and then reduces towards the thigh, the compression stocking acts as a layer of muscle by gently squeezing your stretched vein walls, allowing the valves to close. The cavity of the vein is reduced, thereby restoring blood flow to a normal state and aiding overall circulation. Additionally, compression stockings reduce the risk of varicose veins, phlebitis (inflammation of the vein), and thrombosis, as well as alleviate common symptoms such as swollen feet and ankles and tired, aching legs. Clinical studies have proven that compression stockings are not only beneficial, but are also a mainstay in relieving symptoms of impaired lower circulation during pregnancy and the post-partum period. >> You can pick up a pair from NovoMed in Malad for `3,000-5,000

Blink, Blink! If you have thin or sparse lashes, getting permanent eyelashes may seem like a better idea than using volumising mascara. But, these can cause diseases and pose a serious health risk for your eyes. Yamini Walia tells you more
F
rom hair transplants to cosmetic surgery, in this era of technology, there is a solution to every beauty problem. So, if your eyelashes aren’t as thick and luscious as you’d like them to be, you can glue on permanent lashes. You might jump with excitement at the idea, but it is not an ideal solution. Read on to find out how they can harm your eyes.
What are permanent eyelashes? >> Back acne can be treated and prevented just like regular acne dear Barbara, I have always had clear skin, but I have recently developed skin allergies and sensitivities. As a result, I am now suffering from redness of skin. I feel like hiding my face because it looks ghastly! Even makeup doesn’t help. What should I do to get rid of this problem? — ravneet Kaur, dadar (W) dear ravneet Don’t worry, skin redness is curable. If you apply too much makeup, don’t apply heavy foundation, as it can irritate your skin, resulting in redness. You can opt for certain foundations that are specifically tailored for red skin. Also, don’t use scented skin care products as they will do more harm than good. Try to stay away from chemicals as much as possible.
Long eyelashes are quite popular and people who have short or thin eyelashes are tempted to use artificial ones to make their natural ones appear fuller and longer. To enable this, a glue is used to stick a fake eyelash on to each natural eyelash. Cosmetologist and anti-ageing expert at Ra Skin and Aesthetics, Dr. Rashmi Shetty, says, “Permanent eyelashes are known as eyelash extensions. The procedure is carried out with a special adhesive, in a way that ensures that the glue doesn’t touch the eyelid, as that might cause irritation.” Apart from this, eyelashes can also be created with the patient’s own hair, which is surgically transplanted to the edges of your eyelids. This is usually done when the patient doesn’t have eyelashes because of a disease, injury or burn. Dr Mohan Thomas, MD of the Cosmetic Surgery Institute, says, “A surgery is performed under local anaesthesia, where 15-20 hair follicles are transplanted. This hair grows naturally, the only exception being that it has to be trimmed regularly, since it grows like hair on your scalp.” The procedure takes approximately one hour for a full set, 45 minutes for a half set and one hour for a fill-in. A trained professional should apply these extensions, so don’t try to do this on your own as you will harm your eyes irreversibly. Eyelashes are available in various lengths, colours and density. The two most popular styles are doll lashes, consisting of
longer lashes at the centre of the lash line, and cat-eye lashes, where the corner lashes are longer to create a cat-like eye.
are these harmful? Eyelash extensions are in fact, quite harmful, as they can cause infections. They need to be sterilised to avoid any side effects. These are some of the harmful effects of permanent lashes: l The
glue that is used to stick the eyelashes can irritate your eyes, especially if it touches your eyelid, since that area is very thin and quite sensitive. Even a mild irritation will lead to swelling and itching. If you rub your eyes, it can cause pigmentation and fine lines. These infections can spread to your body too. l After a week or two, the extensions start becoming loose and as a result, they get tangled. In such situations, you will need to brush them constantly and set them straight again. l You can also lose your natural eyelashes due to the improper placement and pull of permanent eyelash extensions. l Some people’s eyelashes start falling out in patches. This looks unsightly as in some places the eyelashes will be long while in others they will be short.
What are the remedies? There are certain remedies that can help you get rid of the infections caused by eyelash extensions. However, getting treated by your dermatologist is your best bet. Dr Mohan, adds, “If you get an infection, it has to be treated with a combination of antibiotics and soothing agents. If it is not treated, it may leave scars which might distort your eyelids.”

A rare jugalbandi
he principal format for the presentation of Hindustani music is the solo performance, with the vocalist or instrumentalist at the centre of the performance traditionally presenting his own take on a selected raga. Over the past 50 years, the jugalbandi format, a kind of duet, has gained popularity too, mainly for the range of expressions it offers to the listener, and the friendly — and occasionally not-so-friendly — musical duels that play out on stage during such performances. A jugalbandi between a vocalist and a bansuri player, however, is almost unheard of, mainly because of the dissimilarity of pitches between a human voice and the notes of a flute. About 20 years ago, musical diva Kishori Amonkar and bansuri wizard Hariprasad Chaurasia performed one such jugalbandi in a spellbinding all-night festival at the Shivaji Park maidan. Jayateerth Mevundi — who comes closest to the late vocal legend Bhimsen Joshi — performed another such jugalbandi, with well-known bansuri player Rakesh Chaurasia. Pitch was not a problem, since Mevundi sings in E, a considerably high key for a male singer, and Chaurasia Rakesh Chaurasia plays in the same key.

hen determination is combined with dedication, the result is definitely scintillating. This was exactly the case when young and talented Odissi exponent Ankur Balal performed at the Little Theatre of the National Centre for the Performing Arts as part of the Umang series of performances. Ankur Balal is an ardent disciple of accomplished exponent, Guru Jhelum Paranjape, pursuing Odissi for more than two decades. He has also attended the workshop of celebrated Odissi meastro Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. When Ankur was hardly seven years old, he was inflicted with fever and thereby lost his hearing ability but that did not deter Ankur from pursuing his passion. Today he is also a teacher at the Smitalay Academy of Odissi. Ankur commenced his performance with Dashamaha Vidya, an unique composition in praise of the universal Goddess and her 10 attributes that include virile and powerful forms like the Kali or Durga, as the slayer of the demons and the destruction of the evil and the Goddess of benevolence and prosperity and kindness too. This number was performed with complete mastery over the dramatic element and the projection of the quintessence of the Odissi dance.
21 The jugalbandi was staged as part of Samanvay, an event organised by Pancham Nishad. Satyajit Talwalkar on the tabla and Ajay Joglekar on the harmonium provided excellent instrumental support. A full to the brim auditorium paid a tribute to the memory of the late Vasant Desai on the occasion of his 102nd birth anniversary at the S.M. Joshi Sabhagruh. Desai was one of the stalwarts of the Golden Era of Hindi film music. He made extensive use of ragas and raginis in his songs. Very few people know that 'Maitrim Bhajat', the prayer for universal peace which was sung by M.S. Subbalakshmi before the General Assembly of United Nations, was composed by Vasant Desai. The programme began with this song and a website was also launched. Four recipients of the coveted Bharat Ratna have performed under his baton. Apart from Lata, it was M.S., Bismillah Khan and Bhimsen Joshi who have sung the raga 'Hindol Bahar'. Desai also used a rare raga like 'Malagunji' which was demonstrated at the programme. His song 'Ae Malik Tere Bande Hum' became a mandatory prayer in prisons across the entire sub-continent and the other song 'Humko Manki Shakti Dena' (Kedara) was adopted as a mandatory prayer by schools all over India. It was a fitting tribute to the memory of the composer.
Ankur’s brilliant Odissi The Simhaendra Pallavi took the audience to a journey of both music and melody, wherein the dancer displayed intricate rhythmic patterns balancing simultaneously with lyrical and graceful tribangis. It was amazing to watch Ankur dance to perfect rhythmic accuracy, winning applause from the select audience. After the emotional and romantic ashtapadi 'Kisalaya Sayana' portraying the inter-relationship between Radha and Krishna, Ankur concluded the performance with his choreography, the Odiya bhajan that portrays Lord Jagannath and the ritualistic 'yatra' which is conducted with great fanfare and devotion, every year. To watch Ankur perform is sheer pleasure, as he is completely involved and gives his best, whether it is the pure dance Pallavi, or the virile Goddess or the depiction of the coy maiden, he is completely at ease and versatile too. Ankur received fine orchestral support from Rohan Dahale on the mardal and Jatin Sahu for the wonderful singing and Sarkar on the violin. A brilliant performer indeed.

onceptualised by seasoned playwright Mishti Verma, 'Zubaan' touches upon the delicate topic of gender sensitisation through the medium of theatre. Being performed as a part of 'YINDIA', Zubaan is written by Mishti Verma – theatre director and founder of Inner Katha Interventions – and showcases a series of monologues depicting issues such as fair skin, self-identity, think manager, think man, sexual harassment among others. Based on research interviews and true life experiences of achievers across India, Zubaan aims to voice the unheard voices of women who have beaten stereotypes. One special piece is a tribute to the National Award, ‘Red and White Bravery’ Award and ‘Rajeev Gandhi Manav Seva’ Award winner,
Preeti Monga, India’s first visually impaired aerobics instructor. These sensitive social themes will be presented on stage in the form of hardhitting performances using dance and rhetoric comic avatars. ‘YINDIA’ will start with an inspiring speech from keynote speaker, the city's Chief Income Tax Commissioner, Urvashi Saxena, followed by a theatrical talk by a leading psychologist, Dr. Kanan Khatau Chikhal, on stress management and work life balance. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a doji pattern. This indicates indecisiveness amongst investors. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the 5 days moving average has dropped below its 15 days moving average. This is negative and a sell signal. Further, the index is below its 5 and 15 days moving averages. Moreover, the velocity parameters too indicate weakness. All these indicate a negative bias and the possibility of a further decline unfolding. Investors are advised to avoid buying at current levels.

Kick starting the process of 5% stake sale in SAIL, the Disinvestment Department yesterday held meeting with merchant bankers and steel ministry officials to move ahead with it. "It was a preliminary meeting to discuss the process. No timeline has been decided as yet," sources said. The sale of 5% stake or about 20.65 crore shares at the current market price would fetch the exchequer about Rs 1,900 crore. SAIL shares yesterday closed at Rs 93.10, down 0.85% on the BSE. Government holds 80% stake in SAIL. A 5% dilution would help the government meet the minimum 25% public shareholding norm of market regulator Sebi.

GST Is The Best Bet, Which May Not Happen
Reliance’s Launch of Mobile Telecom Services Is Credit Negative, Says Moody’s
In fiscal correction quest
By A Business Reporter
T
he task of “fiscal consolidation for this government will not be easy. While there is scope for switching expenditure from unproductive subsidies to spending in growth-critical areas such as infrastructure, health and education, there is little room to cut overall expenditures. Therefore, to sustainably reduce fiscal deficit, the government must raise revenues as a share of GDP says Crisil research in a just released report. According to it “To raise tax rates at this juncture is not prudent because it will severely hurt growth. Instead, the government must focus on implementing structural reforms such as the goods and services tax (GST), which will lift tax revenues, lower the cost of doing business and boost growth. The impact of GST on tax revenues will be two-fold. By eliminating the cascading effect of multiple
central and state taxes, GST will reduce the cost of doing business and increase profitability, which, in turn, will attract investments and ultimately help GDP growth. Lower taxation and filing costs will also improve the price competitiveness of Indian goods abroad, boosting exports. Second, by simplifying the tax regime, GST can significantly improve tax compliance and increase tax revenues. Unfortunately, implementation of GST in this financial year is unlikely. With limited upside to tax revenues and large roll-over of subsidies from last fiscal, we expect fiscal deficit to stay high at 4.3% of GDP in 2014-15. Beyond this year, however, Crisil believes the most likely outcome is a partial GST - one that excludes petroleum goods – given its large impact on state revenues. Even with this, fiscal deficit could correct to 3.3% of GDP by fiscal 2017. A failure even to implement a partial GST
would result in the fiscal deficit being much higher at around 44.2% of GDP in fiscals 2016-2017. Crisil is of the opinion that “Beyond fiscal 2015, among other things, the speed of fiscal consolidation will depend on the timing and scale of GST that is implemented. Despite its advantages, we do not envision a full-scale implementation of a GST in its current form. The most likely outcome in our view is only a partial GST - one that excludes petroleum goods - given its large impact on state tax revenues. But even with this, India’s fiscal deficit will correct to 3.3% of GDP by fiscal 2017 from a worrying average of 5.0% in the last three years. A full-scale implementation of GST could have helped India reach a fiscal deficit of 3.0% GDP by fiscal 2017. Sans GST, correction in fiscal deficit will at best be limited to 4.04.2% of GDP in fiscals 2016 and 2017 even after accounting for some reduction in unproductive spending such as subsidies.
Vodafone Doubles Textile Exports Set To Touch USD 50 Bn Mark Net Charges By A Business Reporter

odafone India has doubled its mobile Internet rates for 2G and 3G customers across the country, and it is being implemented in a phased manner. The new rates for pay-as-you-go (PAYG) pre-paid and post paid users are 4 paisa per 10 KB, as compared to 2 paisa per 10 KB charged earlier. The company had in November last year reduced the rates by up to 80 per cent to 2 paisa per 10 KB, from 10 paisa per 10 KB. When contacted, a Vodafone spokesperson said: "Vodafone following its price change in November 2013 has revised its mobile Internet charges for Pay as Go (PAYG) users, reports PTI. "At 4p/10KB,Vodafone still offers most attractive and lowest standard mobile Internet charges in the industry for pre-paid and post-paid customers. This is applicable to both 2G as well as 3G customers." The spokesperson added that this change is applicable across all circles but is being rolled out in a phased manner. The company had said in November last year that as part of its strategy to "democratise" data, Vodafone was educating current and potential users about how Internet can add significant value to them. As per FY'14, Vodafone India logged in 125% year-on-year increase in data traffic. The company had 52 million data customers in the country, with 7 million of them 3G data users.

ndia's Textile exports are set to touch USD 50-billion mark in the current fiscal, Union Textiles Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar said yesterday. "With 40 billion dollars in textile exports, the country has moved up to the second position from the fourth position last year, and we are hopeful of achieving USD 50 billion this year," Gangwar told reporters after inaugurating the 59th National Garment Fair organised by the Clothing Manufacturers Association Of India (CMAI) here. Textiles have tremendous potential, and the government will provide full support to improve our exports, he said, adding that the industry is also expected to generate a large number of employment opportunities. "After the agriculture sector, the textiles sector has a huge potential of providing a large number of jobs to the vulnerable section of the society," Gangwar said. Raising a pitch for reforms in the labour law, the Minister said he was concerned about the large number of unorganised labour in the textile industry. "The textile ministry is keen to set up 25-30 textile parks and a couple of mega clusters for the development of the industry," Gangwar said. CMAI President Rahul Mehta said that the three-day fair is expected to bring in a business of around Rs 500 crore, besides, many trade inquires are also expected to be generated, which would culminate into further business in near future. "This B2B fair has 697 stalls displaying over 737 brands. Approximately
40,000 retailers from all over India are expected to visit here," he said. Mehta said that the domestic garment industry had been somewhat sluggish for the last couple of months. "However, with the govt firmly in place and economic sentiments turning positive, I anticipate a return to growth rate of 12 to 15% in the coming months. "Exports are seeing a buoyant phase after a long time and this should continue. I am expecting a good period of growth in the next 3 to 5 years," he said.

L
ast Wednesday, Reliance Industries said it would launch a phased nationwide roll-out of its mobile telecoms service Reliance Jio next year and invest a total of INR700 billion ($11.6 billion) into the unit. “The investment will increase RIL’s net debt, and Reliance Jio will not generate any EBITDA for at least next 12 months, a credit negative for RIL, says rating agency Moody's in its latest Credit Outlook report. . According to it “Based on RIL’s March 2014 annual report, we estimate that it has already invested about INR400 billion in Reliance Jio, and we expect RIL to invest the next INR300 billion in Reliance Jio over the next two years. The additional investment will increase RIL’s consolidated net debt by an equal amount, pushing its consolidated adjusted net debt/EBITDA to 2.1x from 1.4x at 31 March, an increase we already incorporated into the company’s ratings. “Further, the telecom investment is exposed to significant technological, operational and commercial risks, given India’s nascent commercial rollout of 4G. Nonetheless, Reliance Jio is potentially a formidable competitor in India’s telecom sector. It will enter the Indian telecom space as a well-capitalized entity, supported by the financial muscle of RIL, India’s largest conglomerate. Reliance Jio acquired 78.8MHz of 1800MHz spectrum in 14 circles in February, and it is also the only player with a pan-India 4G spectrum. Its spectrum and financial wherewithal should give it firepower to offer aggressive pricing, particularly given its aspirations for offering services in rural areas. RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani said at the company’s annual general meeting that Reliance Jio’s voice and data services would initially cover about 5,000 towns and cities accounting for over 90% of urban India, as well as over 215,000 villages in India. The target is to expand this to over 600,000 villages. Reliance expects to roll out Reliance Jio in 2015, with trials in certain cities as soon as August this year. Reliance Jio’s entry into India’s highly competitive telecom sector “ is also credit negative for incumbent mobile operators and market leaders Bharti Airtel Ltd. and Vodafone India because it will undoubtedly result in intensified competition that will lead to declines in average revenue per user and margins. Competition in the Indian telecom sector has only just eased over the past four quarters, but we expect market stability to be challenged when Reliance Jio rolls out its service next year. However, the large incumbents have equally strong spectrum holdings and more importantly, existing large subscriber bases, well-established brand equity, 2G and 3G services apart from 4G services, and an existing operational set-up including towers, backhaul, marketing and distribution architecture, all of which mitigates much of the near-term competitive threat from Reliance Jio. Furthermore, given issues of language and literacy, large parts of rural India remain a substantially voice-based market where near-term demand for 4G services may be muted believes Moody's. Bharti is currently India’s largest operator, with over 208 million subscribers and a market share of approximately 28%. Vodafone India is a close second with about 168 million subscribers and an approximately 23% market share, according to the Cellular Operators Association of India. Both companies have strong operating profiles and can offer full voice and data services across 2G and 3G technologies throughout India and 4G in selected cities

L
ONDON: Defending champion Andy Murray breezed through his Wimbledon opener on Monday with a confident 6-1, 6-4, 7-5 win over baby-faced Belgian David Goffin. Third-seeded Murray, bidding to become the first British man to successfully defend a Wimbledon title since Fred Perry in 1936, hit eight aces and 28 winners. “I thought it was a very high standard of match, we played some great rallies, and I was glad to finish it in three sets because he was playing very well,” said Murray. “Sometimes you can win in three and not play well but in terms of the way I struck the ball it was a good start.” The British star was never broken as he brushed past the 23-year-old Goffin, the world number 104, with new coach Amelie Mauresmo as well as former NBA superstar Shaquille O’Neal looking on from the Centre Court stands. Murray, who has made at least the semi-finals on his last five appearances at the All England Club, goes on to face Slovenia’s Blaz Rola. The Scot was joined in the second round by Czech sixth seed Tomas Berdych, the 2010 runner-up, who came from a set down to beat Ro-
mania’s Victor Hanescu, 6-7 (5/7), 61, 6-4, 6-3. Berdych arrived at Wimbledon having joined US veteran Venus Williams in a naked photo shoot for a pre-tournament ESPN magazine special. Latvian 12th seed Ernests
Gulbis, who made the French Open semi-finals, also went into the second round by defeating Estonia’s Jurgen Zopp 7-6 (9/7), 7-5, 7-6 (12/10). Spanish 18th seed Fernando Verdasco, who took Murray to five sets in the quarter-finals in
2013, was knocked out by Australia’s Marinko Matosevic 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 62. Sergiy Stakhovsky, the Ukrainian who send seven-time champion Roger Federer crashing to a shock second round loss last year, beat Argentina’s Carlos Berlocq 6-3, 6-3, 63. Later Monday, Novak Djokovic, the 2011 champion and runner-up to Murray in 2013, starts against 26-year-old Kazakh, Andrey Golubev who is ranked 55 and has lost all three of his main draw appearances at Wimbledon. Despite being number two in the world, Djokovic is the top seed over current world number one Rafael Nadal. Former women’s world number one Victoria Azarenka won her first match since January on the same court where she suffered a knee injury which ended her 2013 hopes. Azarenka, the eighth seed, won 63, 7-5 against Croatia’s Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, who was a semi-finalist back in 1999, on Court One. That was the same arena where she hurt her right knee in a nasty fall in the first round 12 months ago.
UK firm honours Sachin with rare coin Maiden F4 race win for Arjun Maini L
ONDON: Britain’s premium luxury goods brand East India Company has issued an exclusive legal tender gold coin worth 12,000 pound sterling in honour of Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. The rare coin has been issued in honour of Tendulkar’s remarkable career spanning 24 years. “Only 210 gold coins, each weighing precisely 200g, are being issued to pay tribute to Tendulkar at a global level. Only very few will ever see this coin in the flesh, making them exceptionally rare and precious amongst thousands of fans who yearn to own a piece of the superstar’s legacy,” the London-based firm said in a statement. “Every single 200g coin issued is a masterpiece in its own right. Exclu-
sively presented in a custom made presentation box the coin is accompanied by an individually numbered and personally signed certificate of authenticity along with an autographed cricket bat by Sachin Tendulkar,” it added. Tendulkar said he was honoured by the recognition. “All my life, I have had a dream of playing cricket for India. I am very fortunate to have lived this dream for the last 24 years. I am honoured to be recognised with the issue of these special coins, which have been impressively designed with a lot of thought,” Tendulkar said. The issue of a ‘legal tender’ coin is an official mark of distinction given to individuals who have accomplished great achievements in human history.

NETTERTON (UK); Sixteenyear-old Indian Arjun Maini clinched his maiden F4 win in race two of the BRDC F4 Championship in Snetterton here. Driving for Lanan Racing, Maini started from pole but lost out on the early advantage owing to a safety car caused by the stranded car of another competitor, but recovered to carve out a lead of over three seconds from Diego Mechaca of Mexico to take victory yesterday. Championship leader George Russell was third. Maini had finished eighth in Race 1 and fourth in the final race of the weekend and is currently fourth in the standings among 22 drivers after nine rounds.
“I am really happy. Reverse grid or not, a race win is a race win and I have had good pace all weekend,” Maini said. “I messed up a little yesterday, but I’ve got back on track today and I’m so happy to finally get the first win.”

Lilly stuns world champion Asif in snooker
S
HARM EL-SHEIKH (Egypt): India’s Dharminder Lilly stunned top Pakistan cueist and IBSF World snooker champion Muhammad Asif 4-3 to register his third straight win in the singles event of the ongoing World 6-Red and Team Snooker Championship here today. Lilly, 39, fought back from two frames down to draw level with a break of 66 and then edged ahead after winning another frame. Asif, however, claimed the sixth and was closing on a win when he missed the last pink and Lilly seized on the opportunity to take the match 4-3 in what amounted to a close win. Another Indian cueist Ketan Chawla won his fourth consecutive match and, like Lilly, is on top of his group. Faisal Khan and Laxman Rawat also won their respective matches in the singles event. In another stunning upset in the Masters team 15-Red event, the most unlikely duo of a traditionalist Rafath Habeeb and an unorthodox Nadeem Azeez edged past Egypt’s number one pair of Momen Elensary and Hossam Harb 3-2. The Indian ladies though had a mixed day, with Arantxa Sanchis and Neena Praveen winning their respective matches while Umadevi and Indira Gowda losing their respective encounters.
Saina & Co starts Colombia still mourns Escobar's death, club sings in honour campaign at Australia Open R By Abhishek Hore
S
YDNEY: After a quarter-final exit last week, ace shuttler Saina Nehwal will now look to better her performance when she leads the Indian challenge in the USD 750,000 Star Australian Badminton Open, starting here today. The 23-year-old Indian has been struggling for the last oneand-a-half year with just one title to show in the form of India Grand Prix Gold in January. However, she won all her matches in the Uber Cup to help India win bronze in the tournament. But her comeback at Indonesia ended in the last eight stage. World number nine, Saina, seeded sixth, will be up against a difficult customer in Sun Yu of China in the very first round.
IO DE JANEIRO: Two decades have passed since Andres Escobar was gunned down in cold blood for netting an unfortunate own goal in the World Cup and as Colombians celebrate a last-16 berth in the ongoing edition, they also continue to mourn the death of one of their most revered footballers. The painful memories of the tragic incident linger and Colombia, especially his club Atletico Nacional, continues to remember him. Shortly after returning home following a first-round elimination in the 1994 USA World Cup, defender and then captain Escobar, who scored an own goal in the 2-1 defeat by the hosts, was shot dead in a restaurant car park in Medellin. The incident was condemned by international football community and tributes continue to pour in from across the world. Present day players of Atletico Nacional, in fact, sing a song dedicated to Escobar
Andres Escobar, the South American side’s captain, whose attempt to intercept the ball results in an own goal; a mistake that ultimately cost him his life. before matches in the Colombian league. "He is fondly remembered even today. Nacional players, before every match in the Colombian league, sing a song dedicated to him and its lyrics has Escobar's name in it," said Nicolas, a passionate Colombian fan who often tries his hand in the lower division leagues back home and also keeps a tab on
Nacional's performance. "That was a cowardly act and cannot be pardoned. Colombia will never forget him (Escobar)," the 26year-old, who is sporting a haircut that resembles a football and who is in Brazil following his country's progress in the ongoing World Cup along with two other friends, added. Escobar had guided Nacional to the Copa Libertadores title in 1987.
Escobar, who would have been 47 now, was shot six times in the back by men hired by drug lords, apparently as revenge for his contribution to his own team's exit from a World Cup. The common belief is that Colombia's exit so early in the tournament had caused huge gambling losses to several drug lords of the country, which was considered as one of the four semi-final contenders going into the event. The result was that a player who was a quiet, disciplined and muchloved leader of a golden generation of Colombian footballers had to pay the heaviest of prices in the history of international football. The shots would ring around the world. After years of yearning, Colombian fans have got something to cheer about with their team already having secured a place in the round of 16 after two convincing wins. The Colombian fans are delighted as their team is playing in the sport's biggest event.

HC bars over 400 websites from showing FIFA 2014 on Sony plea
NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court today restrained over 400 websites from showing FIFA 2014 World Cup matches on the plea of MSM Pvt Ltd which contended that as authorised broadcaster of the tournament its rights were being infringed by the "rogue" portals. Vacation judge justice V Kameswar Rao also directed the various Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block the websites mentioned in the petition of Multi Screen Media (MSM) as well as any other portals which are later found to be violating the rights of the official broadcaster of FIFA 2014 in Indian subcontinent. It also directed the High Court registry to forward a copy of the order to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Department of Information Technology so that they can direct the ISPs to block the infringing websites. The court also issued summons to all the defendants, which included several websites and their known owners, and said it will give the detailed order tomorrow. It listed the matter for further hearing in July. MSM, formerly Sony Entertainment Television India Pvt Ltd, submitted that it shows 2014 world cup matches on six of its channels, including Sony SIX, and also streams them online through its portal Sony Liv and mobile application Liv Sports. Advocate Saikrishna Rajagopal, appearing for MSM, contended "these are rogue portals, most of them based overseas, which are pre-dominantly engaged in the activity of infringing the online rights of broadcasters, like MSM". MSM has claimed to have all rights related to live, delayed and repeat telecast and streaming of 2014 world cup matches in Indian subcontinent.

Silvestre Varela’s late header saves Ronaldo’s World Cup hopes
Portugal's Silvestre Varela watches as his header goes past United States' goalkeeper Tim Howard to score his side's second goal and tie the game 2-2 during the Group G match between the USA and Portugal at the Arena da Amazonia in Manaus.
M
ANAUS (BRAZIL): A superb header by Silvestre Varela deep into time added on saved world player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal from crashing out of the World Cup finals on Sunday as it secured a 2-2 draw with the United States. The Americans had looked to be safely into the last 16 after second-half goals by Jermaine Jones and Clint Dempsey saw them come back from 1-0 down -- a goal by Nani -- to lead. However, with only seconds remaining one sublime cross from a pretty anonymous Ronaldo was met by Varela and it soared past Tim Howard to give Portugal a lifeline as a further defeat after the 4-0 hammering by Germany in the opening game would have seen them out. The United States -- who
reached the last 16 in 2010 only to lose to Ghana -- are on four points along with Germany, who they play in their final group game, and who their coach Jurgen Klinsmann led at the 2006 finals. Ghana and Portugal both have one point and play also on Thursday. The Portuguese got just the start they needed to settle their nerves as a terrible defensive error by Stoke City's Geoff Cameron -- the ball flying off his boot to Nani -- saw the Manchester United winger wait for Howard to commit himself before rifling the ball into the net. It had been preempted by an outrageous piece of skill by Ronaldo down the left side, completely bewitching three American players as they tried to corral him out on the touchline, only for

Algeria close to second round after Korea feast P
ORTO ALEGRE (BRAZIL): Algeria moved them tantalisingly close to a first ever appearance in the knock-out rounds after dishing out a 4-2 defeat to South Korea in Porto Alegre yesterday. It was the North Africans' first World Cup victory since their famous 1982 success against West Germany and was the first time an African side had managed four goals in a single World Cup match. First half goals from Islam Slimani, Rafik Halliche and Abdelmoume Djabou did the damage as Korea were on already their knees at the break. Yaya Toure of the Ivory Coast lies on the pitch during the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil Group C match between Colombia and Cote D'Ivoire at Estadio Nacional.
F
ORTALEZA (BRAZIL): Yaya and Kolo Toure will have to shake off their grief over the death of their brother against Greece tomorrow as they try to take Ivory Coast into the World Cup knock-out stages. The Premier League pair were dealt a terrible blow with the news that their 28-year-old brother Ibrahim died of cancer in Manchester last week. Just days later, Ivory Coast will take to the field with their World Cup hopes on the line in their final Group C game against former European champions Greece.
In what will be one of Yaya Toure's final memories of his brother, Ibrahim was at Manchester City's stadium last month when he collected the Premier League trophy. Now the captain will have to contend with his emotions as well as the magnitude of the occasion as Ivory Coast seek to progress from Group C in Fortaleza. Last week's 2-1 loss to Colombia means Ivory Coast's progress is far from assured and they will need a win to make sure of reaching the knock-out stages for the first time. The Elephants trailed Japan in
their opening game before the introduction of benched ex-Chelsea star Didier Drogba was credited with inspiring their 2-1 comeback win. Former France midfielder Sabri Lamouchi, who took charge two years ago in what is his first role as coach, has showed signs of impatience with the constant debate over Drogba, 36. "It is important not to get fixated over Didier Drogba, it is only the second match he is on the bench," said Lamouchi following the defeat to Colombia. But Ivory Coast will take heart from Greece's goalless record so
far which has left them bottom of the group and needing nothing less than a win. The 2004 European champions, despite going a man down, fought off Asian titleholders Japan to rescue a 0-0 draw last week and keep their hopes alive. And after resolving a training ground bust-up between Giorgos Tzavellas and Giannis Maniatis, they will hope to finally find the net and reach the eliminators for the first time. A win would take Greece through, provided already qualified Colombia do not lose to third-placed Japan in Cuiaba.
Gerrard eager to weed out England shirkers R
IO DE JANEIRO: England captain Steven Gerrard has described allegations that English players have deliberately wriggled out of international duty as "disgusting" and called on those concerned to be publicly named and shamed. Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp claimed on yesterday that during his time at Tottenham Hotspur, "there were two or three players who did not want to play for England". Redknapp told BBC radio: "They would come to me 10 days before the game and say, 'Gaffer, get me out of that game. I don't want to play in that game.' That was how it was. I'd say, 'You're playing for your country, you should want to play.' "(They would say) 'Nah, my girlfriend is having a baby in four weeks, I don't want to play'." Gerrard said that Redknapp's remarks had come as "a bit of a surprise" and urged him to disclose the identities of the players in question. "I'd be interested to find out who those players are," Gerrard told reporters at England's World Cup training base in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, two days after his side's group-phase elimination was confirmed. "If Harry is making a comment like that, he should name them
Aaron Lennon? Kyle Walker? Andros Townsend? I don't know who he means. Five years ago? Ten years ago?" Redknapp spent four years at Spurs, between 2008 and 2012, during which time Lennon, Walker, Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch, Darren Bent, Scott Parker, David Bentley, Jermaine Jenas, Michael Dawson, Tom Huddlestone, Jonathan Woodgate and Ledley King were all involved in the England setup.
and embarrass them. No-one in this group wants to go home. "If it's the case, it's disgusting. For me, if a player doesn't want to be here, he doesn't deserve to be here at a World Cup. "'They' didn't want to play for England. Who? Name them. Is it
HODGSON MOUNTS DEFENCE OF ENGLAND TACTICS England manager Roy Hodgson says he has no regrets about his team selection at the World Cup despite his side being eliminated after back-to-back defeats by Italy and Uruguay. Former England striker Gary Lineker has asserted that Hodgson "got it wrong" by opting for a 4-2-3-1 formation that saw Liverpool team-mates Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson aligned in central midfield. Lineker felt that England were outnumbered in midfield as a result and said that Hodgson's side would have been better served by a 4-3-3 system, but the manager stood by his tactical choices. "In the first game (against Italy) we
played with Raheem Sterling in behind Daniel Sturridge and he was quite often in a fairly deep position around Andrea Pirlo and Daniele De Rossi," Hodgson said.
JAPAN LOOK FOR MISSING SPARK AGAINST COLOMBIA CUIABA (BRAZIL): Coach Alberto Zaccheroni must urgently find a way to unlock Japan's attacking potential against already-qualified Colombia tomorrow but is relying on events elsewhere if his side are to reach the World Cup last 16. Japan came to Brazil with their hopes high after finishing ahead of Australia in their Asian qualifying group, aiming to better their impressive last-16 showing in South Africa. But little has gone right for the Blue Samurai since they started brightly against Ivory Coast, taking an early lead through Keisuke Honda only to concede twice. Manchester United playmaker Shinji Kagawa was relegated to the bench for the next game against Greece and although he came on in the second half, the match finished in a drab 0-0 draw. After the stalemate against 10man Greece a frustrated Honda was damning about the team's lack of creative spark.
Pitch invader was neo-Nazi sympathizer
RIO DE JANEIRO: The man who invaded the pitch during the Germany-Ghana match at the World Cup was a neo-Nazi sympathizer, according to a report that will be delivered to FIFA. The fans' antidiscrimination network, Fare, is preparing a report on Saturday's incident, when a shirtless fan interrupted play. Messages written on his chest and back included "HH", signifying Heil Hitler, and "SS," referring to the Nazi paramilitary unit. "There would be no other explanation for it," Fare executive director Piara Powar told The Associated Press on yesterday. The question becomes how does one control an individual fan who chooses to mark his body and jumps on the pitch to propagate his neo-Nazi views." Fare's report will also refer to fans wearing blackface makeup at the match in Fortaleza with no intervention by stadium security, Powar said. Both incidents are "currently being analyzed by the chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee," the governing body said in a statement. "We cannot comment any further at this stage." "We do not respect any discriminatory messages," FIFA spokeswoman Delia Fischer told reporters earlier Sunday. "We are always taking any evidence or submissions to our disciplinary committee."
Power fails in southern part of Rio de Janeiro
RIO DE JANEIRO: Power failed in a densely populated area in the southern part of Rio de Janeiro that is popular with tourists visiting for the World Cup. Buildings throughout the well-to-do Botafogo district lost electricity yesterday, said Raphael Torres, a spokesman for the power company, Light SA. He said he didn't know how many people were affected or the cause of the failure. "We have our personnel working to re-establish service," Torres said. The outage didn't hit the Copacabana neighborhood, where most World Cup tourists are staying, or the beach where the FIFA Fan Fest watch area gathers thousands of people to take in the tournament's matches on a TV giant screen. Daniel Duarte, 32, was at home watching the match between Algeria and South Korea when the lights went out.
Supersubs prove World Cup match winners for Belgium
RIO DE JANEIRO: Belgian supersub Divock Origi is not sure whether he will get another game at the World Cup, but he is happy to put himself at the mercy of coach Marc Wilmots. The 19year-old is one of a team of scorers-in-waiting who have taken the European side through to the World Cup last 16. Origi, who could have played for Kenya, came on as a substitute for a second game in a row against Russia yesterday to slam in a precious 88th minute winning goal for the European side. On Tuesday it was Marouane Fellaini and Dries Mertens who were brought on to get winning goals after Belgium had fallen behind to Algeria. Thanks to their efforts, the Red Devils are likely to top Group H. Origi is raw talent. Fellaini is an established English Premier League star, now with Manchester United. Mertens plays with Napoli in Italy. Wilmots said after the win that every player has to be ready to wait for a chance to get on the pitch and vaunted the depth of his squad's strength.

Capello still believes in Russian chances MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JUNE 24, 2014
RIO DE JANEIRO: Fabio Capello insisted today that he believes his Russian charges will put a last-gasp loss to Belgium behind them and reach the second round of the World Cup. Thousands of Russian fans swarmed the Rio beaches ahead of their match against the Red Devils -- but a goal by Divock Origi put a massive dampener on their fiesta at the Maracana. The 2018 World Cup hosts will now have to beat an Algeria side which found its goalscoring touch with a vengeance in Sunday's other Group H game -- beating South Korea 4-2 -- or else head back early to Moscow. That would be a another mission unaccomplished for Capello, whose stellar reputation from club level and a welter of successes with AC Milan and Real Madrid took a knock with England's flop in 2010. But the 68-yearold said he thought his side would come through and join the Belgians in the next phase -- where they may find Germany awaiting them. "Of course, I still believe. We have no other option than to go out and beat Algeria," Capello told reporters as he assessed the loss on the back of a disappointing draw with South Korea. Algeria's goal spree against the South Koreans showed the opening game was there for the taking only for Igor Akinfeev's howler in conceding the softest of goals to deny them. That incident showed up one of a number of parallels between Capello's Russian campaign and the desultory England showing in South Africa. There, a goalkeeping blunder from Robert Green set the tone while the Three Lions also met Algeria. A win over Slovenia meant that a draw on that occasion with the North Africans was ultimately enough to secure qualification -- before Germany extinguished England's hopes.

AO PAULO: Substitutes Leroy Fer and Memphis Depay converted brilliant assists provided by Arjen Robben as The Netherlands beat Chile 20 to finish on top of group B in the World Cup here today. Fer scored with his first touch of the match in the 77th minute when Robben curled one inside the box and he outjumped everyone to angle his header perfectly beating seasoned Chilean goalie Claudio Bravo as regular captain Robin van Persie applauded from the stands. Having scored 10 goals in the group league engagements, the Dutchmen also hold an envious record of scoring two or more goals in their last 13 international engagements. It was a twin substitution from the Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal that worked wonderfully for the winners. Norwich City's Fer and PSV Eindhoven's Memphis's introduction in place of off-colour Wesley Sniejder and Jermaine Lens worked wonders for the 'Oranje' brigade.

URITIBA, Brazil: Spain avoided becoming the first defending champion to fail to get a point in the next World Cup thanks to a 3-0 win over Australia. David Villa, in his final international match, scored the opener, while Fernando Torres and Juan Mata scored in the second half to secure the result. The first real chance of the game for either team came in the 20th minute when Andrés Iniesta picked out David Villa at the far post. Villa's volleyed effort sailed well wide, but he was ruled offside anyway, even though it appeared he wasn't on replays.
