t was a truly ethereal feminine feel at Megha Garg's 'The Warrior Soul' collection that kick-started the fifth and final day of LakmĂŠ Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2014 at Palladium Hotel on Sunday. The special technique of pocketing and quilting sequins between fabrics formed the focal point of the line. On view were some gorgeous gowns and dresses with

intricate draped panels and structured patterns. What followed was the 'J’aime La Vie' (I Love Life) collection of Pallavi Singhee from her Verb label. From stylish day wear ideal for a lunch appointment, to practical black-and-white skirts and shirts, thecollection moved to formal dresses as well as slinky pencil skirts. For sheer drama there was the sheer black lace and organza number with silk trims and sporty ribbed detailing. And the last designer in the first time slot of the day was popular sari-gown specialist Sonaakshi Raaj who presented her opulent line titled 'Rebel with a Cause.' It was a tale of finely-crafted couturegowns reflecting a luxurious style with some edgy detailing. Oxblood red, nude, charcoal and metallics formed the colour palette. The fluid fabrics added to the charm of the flirty sensuous silhouettes of thegarments with detailing meticulously added. The peach sari-gown with drop-shoulder glittering blouse, followed by a halter gold mesh creation stood out. Jumpsuits in gold had beaded tassels, while thesharply cut white embroidered one-button jacket worn with side slit pants was definitely ideal cocktail wear. And the shining showstopper was the sexy and curvy Malaika Arora Khan all dressed up in a post-box red lacy embroidered gown with a layered luxurious tulle flounce - a fitting ending to a super show.

A dip in Sindhu must: The plane can wait!

The captain came out of the engine cabin and shouted “Where has he gone?” The airhostess, the purser could not enlighten him because they also did not know why he had not come. The place, Lufthansa, was delayed at the Karachi airport because a passenger had not turned up. He was one of the three Indian editors invited to have a dekho at Germany by the government. We were worried: The plane's crew was looking at us quite hard as if we were from a primordial tribe. We could feel their disapproval. And the passengers too seemed to become restless. Has anything tragic happened? Something – passenger's death – must have held up the plane.... and at last, there he was with a flush on his face. He looked as if he had accomplished his life's ambition. There was a sense of fulfillment in him. He settled down slowly and as the captain or whoever it was said: “We will not wait next time,” he shot back: “There will be no next time.” When we asked what happened, he came out with a story about a Hindu's faith. He had gone to have a dip in the Sindhu river! “For a Hindu”, he said a 'snan' in Sindhu is salvation. I thought I should not miss the opportunity to have 'snan' in Sindu. Finally he said: “How sad it is that Sindhu Mata is flowing through Pakistan!”

martian landscape. Don't believe the yearly promise from the Municipal Commissioner. And please take Uddhav Thackeray's Ganpati promise too with a little pinch of salt, because it is his party, the Shiv Sena, that runs the BMC, along with that new national entity, the BJP.

Jolts from Jaitley

Are BMC's contractors martians?

So citizens are not wrong when they angrily accuse the BMC of favouring elements who either know nothing about making roads, or know enough to ensure that they'll be needed over and over again for the repairs. It seems there is a cartel of five or six contractors that corners all road contracts, and has been doing so for two decades. Not much

delving into records is required to see that the same entities are retained to keep ruining our roads, with some minor change to the names of the companies. It is alleged that the cartel rigs the tenders and makes adjustments so that each

contractor can win a particular road work. The fixing goes further, with some more subletting and other sleaze. These guys have been giving us potholed roads for twenty years, and so are good at it. Mumbai roads will continue to look like a

No wonder the Pakistanis think it is okay to keep lobbing shells at us. They have been blasting away from across the border and we have, of course, been trading measure for measure. But there is no let up and long range mortar shells are being complemented with heavy to medium machine guns. This report was prominent in a leading broadsheet yesterday. Unfortunately, right alongside, and also prominent, was the story of a

Fly Jet, on a wing and a prayer

We are somewhat perturbed over reports that Jet Airways pilots have been less than particular about how they land their planes. There is something called ‘stabilising the approach’ so that the aircraft comes in for a perfect three-point landing. Reports indicate that some landings have been hard enough (almost slamming the aircraft onto the runway) to warrant punitive action against errant pilots. As per stipulation, they are required to reduce to specific speed and descent rate, and deploy landing gear at a given time, when coming in to land, but

we guess caution is thrown to the winds, literally. If you must know, these lapses put passengers in direct danger of getting fried. And the guy at the controls knows all this. Piqued at being picked up and wanting their management to pay, the flying johnnies have decided to punish the airline with some costly manoeuvres of their own. The DGCA specification is that the pilots must get into flight stabilizing mode when they are 1,000 meters away from ground level. A pilots’ union has now directed its members to meet the stabilized approach criteria when 1,500 meters away, a move that

The Pakistanis must be laughing and emboldened. Also, the man who can do some sabre-rattling from our side, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley, rattled us instead with his belittling of the December 16 Nirbhaya gruesome rape as one incident that cost us millions of dollars in tourism. He is now busy defending himself instead of the country.

By Prashant Hamine

T

he incidents over the last one week have once again brought the issue of Centre-State relations into sharp focus. One was the hooting that Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan got at the function in Solapur in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his subsequent decision to boycott the Prime Ministers functions in the state over the weekend. Second has been Chavan’s allegation of the Centre's bias

Narendra Modi against the state in clearing infrastructure projects. Congress cried foul citing reasons of sponsored ruckus at the prime ministers functions, a charge vehemently denied by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). What needs to be understood here is that all these incidents have happened in assembly poll bound states of Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand. Another significant point is that all these states are ruled by non-BJP parties. Furthermore, the incident

that angered Chavan and the Congress happened in Solapur, a stronghold of the Congress. Heckling, booing or hooting of any public figure publicly is bad and in such cases, works in weakening Centre-State relations even further. The Congress diktat to its chief ministers and appeal to other opposition chief ministers was to stay away from the prime minister's official functions in their state. Chavan followed party high command orders and boycotted Modi’s functions at Nagpur. Furthermore, he even went on to allege that the Centre was biased in clearing the Nagpur metro first instead of the Pune Metro. Both the metros are in Maharashtra. Both the cities are represented by BJP MPs in Lok Sabha. The only difference here is that the Nagpur municipal corporation is ruled by the BJP and the Pune civic body by the Congress-NCP combine.

Mumbai to benefit If that was the case, then one cannot understand as to why it took so long for the construction of Mumbai’s first metro line in a city where the civic body is ruled by the BJPShiv Sena and the Congressled government in the state and until May, it was the Congress led UPA at the Centre. But in this political fight on the eve of the assembly elections, it is Mumbai that stands to gain the most. As union minister for Urban De-

Venkaiah Naidu velopment, M Venkaiah Naidu announced that the Centre was contemplating reviving the scrapped phase two of Mumbai Metro – Charkop-Mankhurd line and extending the Metro network to Thane and entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Surely Mumbaikars are not complaining as long as the projects are completed on time. That brings us to the question or issue of Regionalism versus Federalism. Naidu is now harping on the theme about giving power to the BJP and its allies in the states so that development can be fast-tracked. But more importantly, the BJP plea is because of the numbers game in the Rajya Sabha which at present is loaded against its favour, and needs to be rectified. It has taken such a long time for the BJP to realise that if it needs to have numerical majority in the Upper House of the parliament, it needs to be in power in the state, if not have sizeable numbers. Because elections to civic bodies in the state, various

constituencies in the legislative council – the Upper House in state legislatures where it exists and above all the state legislative assemblies do count in the overall picture when it comes to not just Rajya Sabha, but also the Lok Sabha and to an extent even the Legislative Assembly – the Vidhan Sabha. And that was being talked about of the calls for a strong grassroots policy paralysis that afflicted the previous Congress-led presence. Targeting Governors Last but not least is that Governors of State’s have become pawns in the political games between a Central government run by one political dispensation or alliance against a state government run by a rival alliance. The latest case being the transfer of MahaK rashtra Governor Shankarnarayanan to Mizoram. Will this prove to be the

K Shankarnarayanan proverbial last straw on the camels back remains to be seen as the matter has now reached the Supreme Court in another case. A gridlock is being witnessed between the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, between State’s and the Centre and regional and national parties. The tussle between federalism and regionalism has taken yet another twist and the nation awaits verdicts in the people's court and the court of law.

ith elected representatives from various parties in the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) eager to jump into state politics, party leaderships now have the best choices coming up with experience at the local level. While three sitting corporators have thrown their hat in the ring for securing a Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) ticket from the Mira Bhayandar assembly constituency, NCP corporator Dr Asif Shaikh and his Congress counterparts – Hansu Pandey, Dinesh Nalavade and Prabhat Patil – have staked claim from their respective parties from the Ovala-Majiwada Assembly segment. Three BJP corporators including opposition leader and district president Narendra Mehta are in the fray for the party ticket. Although Mehta is considered to be a front runner, he is faced with a stiff competition from five-time

corporator Morris Rodrigues and veteran BJP leader Rohidas Patil. A popular leader of the region, Rodrigues made his mark as five times corporator and expects to get noticed by the state leadership for the developmental work he got done during his stints thrice as chairman of the standing committee. On the other hand, Rohidas Patil is a die-hard BJP loyalist who has been representing the party since the gram panchayat regime. Known for his administrative skills, Mehta put up a credible performance in catapulting the numerical strength of the BJP to new high in the MBMC. However, Mehta currently holds the district president post and is also the leader of opposition in the MBMC which is in sharp contrast to the BJP’s 'One Man, One Post' policy. For the Ovala-Majiwada constituency, the Mira Bhayandar Congress unit has openly rejected the idea of importing Thane’s Balkrishna

Purnekar who has been desperately trying to make his presence felt in the region.

2009 Assembly statistics. Mira Bhayandar (145) Narendra Mehta ( BJP) had lost the previous state Assembly polls to NCP candidate Gilbert Mendonca with a margin of 10,606 votes. In a triangular contest, Mendonca garnered 62,013, while Mehta secured 51,407 votes. MNS candidate Chandrakant Vaity dented the prospects of the saffron alliance by netting 27,220 votes.

hree primary school going students who have been identified with heart related complications died as they could not get timely medical treatment or surgery. Another 74 students with heart complications are on the death row in Satara district, assembly constituency of Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan who boasted of health programmes in interviews during Independence Day programmes. Out of total 74 students, 14 are described as being 'High Risk' by cardiac experts and the local civil hospital, they may die any moment and another 14 students are put on medicines in Civil Hospital, Satara. Cardiac surgeons from specialty hospitals in Mumbai and Pune who are investigating these cases had expressed fear that few of these students have become 'inoperatable' as they could not get timely treatment or their scheduled heart surgeries could not take place. Now their heart problems have turned 'too complex to operate'. Moreover, another 19 students (heart patients) who are also Shubham Maruti More (6), resident of Kumbhori village in Mahabaleshwar standing in equally at risk are classified as front of Satara Civil Hospital with his ration card. He was diagnosed with heart related 'Not Willing' by District Public problems and his application was rejected by RGJAY at least thrice.

ne person lost his life and four others are critically injured in an explosion at the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation(MIDC), Marol, in the early hours of yesterday. The explosion of a chemical reactor at the Emboay chemical company was so powerful that the slab of the MIDC structure collapsed, killing an employee, Ganesh Kamble, on the spot, and injuring number of others, four of whom have been admitted in a hospital in serious conditions. This according to Kamble, tashildar at Andheri. Officials of the pollution control board, police and fire brigade visited the site to investigate the cause of the explosion. Bagade, a member of the pollution control board, refused to comment, saying, “This being a drug company using narcotics as a base product, all the permissions, inspection and supervision will come under the Central Narcotics Department.” According to him, molasses, which is used in the sugar industry, could have leaked from the pipes resulting in the mishap.

The Satara Zilla Parishad's note which was submitted to the HQ of RBSK. Health Department of Satara and the doctors have washed their hands off these cases. One of the parents complained that she has lost faith/ trust in local doctors since one of the doctors took her only son from school to hospital without her knowledge. All these students were screened and supposed to be operated under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) a national health policy under National Rural Health Mission, started in April 2013. As on date, the scheme is running only on paper in Satara as all 74 dedicated doctors for RBSK have been sacked by the state government two months ago. It has inflated the intensity of the problem. RBSK, launched by the UPA government, was an initiative aimed at screening children from 0 to 18 years for the 4 Ds – Defects at birth, Diseases, Deficiencies and Development Delays including disabilities. The aim of this scheme was protecting and promoting the health of children and improving their survival chances through early diagnosis and free treatment. Totally 275 students were diagnosed with heart related illness in the district during the academic year 2013-14. Due to fund crunch and stringent rules of the scheme, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan himself was reportedly helpless with the RBSK scheme. Finally he allocated some money for heart surgeries of

students from his office under the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. So far, only 156 students have been operated for heart related problems in Satara. However, highest number of operations, 27, was carried out from the donation of Mumbai based Siddhi Vinayak Trust. Besides, local trust, commercial banks and local industrialists gave donations on request from either district officials or local leaders and the Chief Minister. District health officials said: “The main problem with RBSK was that it was interlinked with Rajeev Gandhi Jeevandayee Arogya Yojana (RJGAY) for carrying out operations. Since RGJAY was outsourced to insurance companies, they mercilessly rejected the application of students on smallest of small grounds like a small mistake in their rations cards or difference in name. Shubham Maruti More (6), resident of Kumbhori village in Mahabaleshwar was also diagnosed with heart related problem. His operation could not take place as his application was rejected at least four times by RJGAY authorities over a petty reasons that his name was not mentioned in the family's ration card. Then they said that sign of authority on ration card was in the wrong place. According to officials his application has been now processed but he is in the waiting list for operation since the past three months.

In another case, an over enthusiastic member of civil hospital and anganwadi teacher took Sai Rathode (6) of Devakarwadi near Nigadi, just a short distance from Satara city, to Ninad Hospital for X-ray, without informing the boy's parents. Sai is the only child. His father is dead and his illiterate mother is a farm labourer staying away from their village. The kin of Rathode found the act by the anganwadi teacher to be unpardonable and the boy has been stopped from going to the anganwadi and now only plays with his only friend Kutu, a dog. Rathode has been diagnosed with a rare disease – 'cynosis'. In simple words, due to complication in his heart, supply of pure blood and impure blood get mixed in the body. District health officials have deprived him from getting treatment by putting him into the 'not willing' category. Another patient, Shrusti Yashwant Sanas (4), resident of Patakalmatha village, Varsole block was also identified with a heart related problem. A local doctor convinced her parents that she needs to be operated at a Pune hospital. Her parents took her to Pune for admitted her in the hospital. After two days the doctors said that the girl's operation has been postponed and hence they all went back home. After two weeks, the parents were again asked to admit Shrusti

in the Pune hospital. When she was admitted, suddenly there was a strike in the Pune hospital. Her parents were again informed that the operation was postponed and asked to go back home with the child. Her father, Yashwant Sanas, a farmer said, “Every time, before we took our child to be operated we used to conduct a pooja in the temple and our well wishers used to come to see our daughter. Her operation was postponed and when we went back, guests had come to inquire about her health. It was very embarrassing to tell them that the operation has been postponed.” Venting his ire on the health officials, Sanas said: “It jas happened twice. They are playing with our feelings and the health of our child. Finally, we have resolved that we will not go to a government hospital and will get the operation done privately, whenever we can afford the same.” Several call to the office of the Chief Minister failled to reach to CM Prithviraj Chavan. Officials from the office of the Chief Minister said that CM is busy in the election. Chief Executive Offier of Satara Zilla Parishad G Shrikant refused to comment on the issue saying it is very sensitive. He said, that he has recently took the charge and need check with authorities. Afterwards he did not receive the call or reply to text message.

to put in his papers after the change of government at the Centre. His tenure would have ended in 2017. In June, after a nudge from the Home secretary, Sankaranarayanan had said that he would consider quitting if asked by the appropriate authority. A couple of months ago, Sankaranarayanan was of the opinion that no post is permanent in a democracy and said, “If a person having appropriate authority calls me (asking to quit), then I will certainly think it over.” However, after the transfer order yesterday, when he was asked whether he was planning to approach the court regarding this, just like Aziz Qureshi, his counterpart in Uttarakhand, Sankaranarayanan said, “I don't intend on having any such battle. I will be returning to my home (in Kerala).” Significantly, Sankaranarayanan refused to divulge more details about his resignation saying, “I have to honour the Constitution. It is not possible for me to go to Mizoram. I have sent my resignation to the President today. From tomorrow onwards, I will be a free man. I will return to active politics. As a Governor, I was away from politics. I had friendly relations with every political party.” When asked whether the move had any political vendetta, he said, “That is up to you people to comment about. Our press is so shrewd, so capable, so intelligent. In a democratic set up, no government is permanent, no post is permanent, that will change. Democracy is bigger than anything, we are one of the biggest democratic countries in the world.” Sankaranarayanan has held several important posts, including that of state minister for finance, agriculture and other portfolios. He was also the convenor of the United Democratic Front (UDF), the Congress-led ruling combine in Kerala. He was first appointed Governor of Nagaland, and then moved to Jharkhand. His first posting as Governor of Maharashtra was on January 22, 2010.

fter having given ample of hints that he might contest the ensuing Assembly elections, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray yesterday while speaking to newspersons in Nagpur remarked that contesting elections has not been in the genes of the Thackerays. Replying to queries, he said that if he were to decide on contesting Assembly elections from Mumbai then party cadre from other regions of the state could insist on him contesting from their area. On the demand for granting separate statehood for Vidarbha region, the MNS chief voiced his opposition to the demand. The MNS chief disclosed that his party would contest 40 to 45 Assembly seats from Vidarbha. Replying to

Raj Thackeray queries, he argued that so far no one from the Thackeray family has contested any elections. But at the same time he evaded further queries stating that a decision has not been taken. He further clarified that unlike in 2009 this time candidate selection for Assembly elections will not be based on any written test or interview. Replying to queries over his much-publicised vision document, he added that the

document will be unveiled in the next 10 days. Raj Thackeray argued that if he were to contest the ensuing Assembly elections then it could also cause problems for him to hold election campaign rallies in the rest of the state. He further quipped that for him, the entire state was like one big Assembly constituency. His ambivalent stance is in sharp contrast to his cousin and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray trying to project himself as a man with a vision and leadership qualities. The Sena president in a bid to take mileage on his estranged cousin had recently announced his vision document. The latest to jump on the vision document bandwagon is state BJP president Devendra Fadnavis who is slated to release his own vision document before college students in Pune on August 25.

BJP too eyes M CM’s post? I

N Maharashtra, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has never been on political force to reckon with. Until recently, the only opponent to the Congress was the Shiv Sena. By allying with Shiv Sena, the BJP acquired some strength. It thought it was indeed fortunate to have an ally in the Shiv Sena. There has been an unexpected change in the political trends in the state: The BJP has suddenly moved to the top. In the ensuing state elections, the BJP is certain to fare exceedingly well. It is the Shiv Sena which is depending on the BJP to gain power. All the outsiders in Mumbai will vote for the BJP. The Shiv Sena by itself will not do well in the elections. The Modi magic has changed the political and poll situation in Maharashtra. In all probability, the BJP will gain more seats in the Assembly elections. The party's leaders have made it known that they would also like to stake a claim to the chief minister's post. There is talk the post should be shared – with the Sena CM in the first half of the term and the BJP taking over later. The BJP leaders appear to have become aware that they stand a good chance to back the CM from their party. For the two parties, an embarrassing problem looms larger. Finally, a decision is likely to be taken by the BJP's prime minister. When he came to Mumbai last time, he had exhorted his party workers to provide all possible assistance to the Shiv Sena.

YTH-MAKING has its uses. Myths surrounding a great leader help him accomplish a lot of his personal and political goals. A leader’s public persona is built around a number of myths, ascribing to him the very qualities which ordinary people want all great leaders to possess in abundance. Public perception is key to the building and sustaining of a great leader. Myths are an integral part of managing and moulding that public perception. Having said that, let us take note of four separate but not unconnected pieces of political gossip which, taken together, further strengthens the cult of Narendra Modi. It is not important whether there is any, or some, truth in those stories. The important thing is that a vast majority of people readily accept those apocryphal tales as the gospel truth. And, personally, we are happy that these are lapped up as credible even by the swish set in the big metros. Notably, all four stories concern Modi’s own ministerial colleagues. The first minister, it seems, was having a quiet chit-chat over a cup of tea in a five-star hotel in Mumbai when he was astonished to get a call from the Prime Minister. Modi told him sternly that the moneybag he was having tea with was not a desirable person and cannot have any other thing in mind other than to wangle an official favour or two. A duly chastened minister, pale in the face, made a lame excuse or two, and vamoosed, leaving Mr Moneybags quite bamboozled. Action in the second tale took place in Delhi. A minister was headed on an official foreign tour when he received the Modi call at the airport. ‘As a minister, you are not properly dressed to represent the Government before your foreign hosts… You must strive to portray a businesslike image… wearing jeans is not okay for someone like you…’ Poor fellow, the story goes, raced back home to discard his jeans and T-shirt in favour of the regulation bandhgala and trousers. The third story has a woman minister at the receiving end. Apparently, a week or so after government formation, Modi called her up at about 9.30 in the morning to ask why she wasn’t in her office. She sought to excuse her own leisurely lifestyle and laid-back approach by weakly offering ‘sir, hundreds of people visit me from my constituency… ‘Unko Office Mein Miliye Na… Gharwallon ko bhi kasht deti ho…,’ came the PM put-down. The last one is the most salacious and has now become the staple of political gossip

HE stories of the Arabian Nights which symbolize mystical ideas, are full of the belief that there is a philosopher's stone which will turn metals into gold by a chemical process. No doubt this symbolic idea has deluded men both in the East and West. Many have thought that a process exists by which gold can be produced. But this is not the idea of the wise; the pursuit of gold is for those who as yet are only children. For those who have the consciousness of reality gold stands for light or spiritual inspiration. Gold represents the colour of light, and therefore an unconscious pursuit after light has made men seek for gold. But there is a great difference between real gold and false. It is the longing for true gold that makes man collect the imitation gold, ignorant that the real gold is within. He satisfies the craving of his soul as a child satisfies itself by playing with dolls. If one studied the transitory nature of life in the world and how changeable it is, and the

everywhere. Apparently, a senior minister and his son received a call from the PMO one morning to meet Modi later in the evening. This aroused hope in the father and son duo that the PM was about to assign them greater responsibility, maybe even the charge of a key state. Lo and behold, when the two found themselves in the presence of the PM, they had colour drained out from their cheeks, with Modi telling them point-blank… ‘that money you have taken from so and so for giving him that post, should be returned immediately… this is not how we intend posting people in such key positions.’ That said, the father and son duo was dismissed, with Modi immediately leaving the room. The above story has gained so much cur-

the eyes of the masses, never mind what the professional liberal-secularist class might say about his being a control freak, an authoritarian, even a tin-pot dictator. Given the total bankruptcy of the UPA leadership, and the rudderless state of the nation under it, it should come as no surprise that the people are looking for a superhero, a savior who can slay the demons of corruption, poverty, hunger, etc. Those myths encapsulated in the above tales help further embellish his cult as a doer, a deliverer who shall brook no obstruction in the path of nation-building. Why, seen from this perspective, even the abrupt cancellation of the talks with Pakistan has been lapped up by the masses, who too realize the futility of engaging with a neighbour which refuses to stop hating India for it to be able to do any productive business with us. By the way, a straw poll by a leading economic paper, conducted soon after his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, revealed that Modi’s ratings had gone up further after he took over as prime minister. Mani Shankar Aiyar, eat your heart out…

In fact, there is much speculation both on the amount of bribe involved, with the figure ranging from a low of Rs.50 lakh to a high of Rs.2 crore, and the post in question. Since the mention of a post will automatically indicate the minister in question we shall refrain from doing so. Suffice it to say, by now the chattering classes have more or less zeroed in on the identity of the minister at the heart of the tale. Our purpose in noting the above stories, — and stories they are, certainly not verified true incidents —, is to stress how the public persona of Modi is being shaped anew after he took over as prime minister. Peoples’ hunger for a strong leader, a hard taskmaster, an incorruptible leader. And in Modi they are investing their hopes, their long suppressed aspirations for a national hero who would deliver them from their misery, the endemic poverty, joblessness, the ugliness of their living spaces et al. Modi’s omniscience, omnipotence, as revealed by the apocryphal tales, is a virtue in

OST-DRUBBING, the Congress party seems to have developed a habit of demanding approbation, nay respect, which the people seem most reluctant to grant. First, it asked for the official status of the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha which the voters had clearly denied it. Surprisingly, it quoted a 1977 provision to justify the demand, without realizing that both in 1980 and 1984 it had failed to grant the same status to a non-Congress Party which too, like it now, was short of the minimum 55 members required for the LoP status. Now, it is complaining that the people do not show its chief ministers enough respect. If unpopular Congress CMs are being booed by people who have gathered to hear Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the latter cannot be faulted. Peoples’ respect and adulation is to be earned; it cannot be demanded as a matter of right. Why blame Modi, or, for that matter, the BJP, if tens of thousands of people as far apart as Maharashtra and Jharkhand and Haryana do not want you to stand between them and Modi. By the way, since these states are set to elect new Assemblies soon, the sorry state of Messrs Prithviraj Chavan, Hemant Soren and Bhupinder Singh Hooda at these rallies might be a good indicator of the shape of things to come. The writing is on the wall.

A person may follow a religion and yet not come to the realization of truth. But of what use is his religion to him if he is not happy? The spirit of religion should give happiness. God is happy. He is the perfection of love, harmony, and beauty. A religious person should be happier. If a person who professes religion is always melancholy his religion is disgraced. The form has been kept, but the spirit lost. If religion and mysticism does not lead to joy and happiness, it may just as well not exist, for then it does not help to fulfill the purpose of life. The world today is sad and suffering as the result of terrible wars. The religion which answers the demand of life today is one which invigorates and gives life to souls, which illuminates the heart of man with the divine light which is already there. Not necessarily by any outer form, though for some a form may be helpful, but by showing that happiness which is the desire of every soul. – Hazrat Inayat Khan

to bring in a bill to curb expensive and lavish wedding ceremonies in the state is laudable. The parents of the girl who cannot afford to spend lump-sum amounts are made to feel inferior. Obnoxious display of wealth is anti-social. On an average, even a middle class family has to shell out Rs 15 lakh to arrange a wedding ceremony. It is a huge sum for a middle class family. The situation worsens further if the family has two girls and the father is nearing retirement age. Dowry and expensive wedding celebrations are responsible for increasing corruption, besides being a social evil.

he Kalina-based Mary Immaculate Girls High School which carried out a peace march against eve teasing, illegal parking, and other petty issues, has finally won its battle, with the Mumbai Police intensifying patrolling in the area and curbing illegal parking. On Wednesday, the school authorities and parents marched to the traffic police department, Vakola police department and BMC to press their various demands related to girl safety, eve teasing, illegal parking and the presence of hawkers outside the school gate. Fed up with the repeated complaints from the girls and their parents, the Mary Immaculate Girl's High School took out peace march against the local goons and the illegally parked vehicles More than 2,000 school girls have been under constant threat with the mushrooming of eve teasers from the vicinity, which has disappeared after the police took up the issue seriously. Speaking to the ADC, Dominic D'Sa, chairman of the Bombay Catholic Sabha (Kalina), said, “After the peace march and the coverage by the media, the situation has been brought under control. The marathon was organised to sensitise society on the pertinent issue of child labour. Around 2,000 students ran to support this cause. landslides seem to have occurred primarily owing to the bypassing of technical and scientific guidance for inhabitation of hilly regions. According to the GSI, the part of the Western Ghats which falls in Maharashtra is a geomorphologically active region and the Himalayan region is the most active region in India. The GSI opined that the natural slope of the hills should not be altered or destabilised. A proper geotechnical study should be done before altering any hill slope. Due care has to be taken so that loose material and rocks do not accumulate along the slopes and contour drainage mechanism for quick drainage of rain water should be adopted. Replying to queries over the possible causes to the July 30 landslide at Malin, the GSI deputy director disclosed that if there is heavy rainfall during the monsoon, the top soil gets saturated and water enters the contact planes between soil and rocks, thus reduce frictional forces which holds the rock mass against gravity. The lose water saturated material becomes heavy and moves along the hill slope under the force of gravity. Taking the decision for students and making it easy for the students to play there free of cost, the Yuva Sena asked the varsity whether it would support the students' decision or the private body. The land of the tennis court being under the University Campus, the University will have to extend its support either to the students or to the private institution which had been operating on that land. On Friday, the Yuva Sena members barged into the tennis academy of the MU at Kalina campus and locked the gates. The Yuva Sena took the decision after the MU students complained to the youth wing about the heavy fees structure of the ITA. Even though the students and the youth wing had reported about the issue several times to the University, the MU did not give its final decision over the tennis court or the fees structure introduced by the ITA. A member from the Yuva Sena, who preferred anoynmity said, “Students are being fleeced but the MU is sitting tight over the issue. The MU can manage its sports and sports centre. It has

outsourced tennis to a private body and the students have been sidelined as they cannot afford the exhorbitant fees. After the senate members agitated against the University for not giving the final decisions in the senate meeting, the Vice-Chancellor had banned the members from the meeting. OPTIMISTIC RBI

Does the RBI hold an optimistic view on the state of the economy for FY15? Yes, is the impression collated from the just released Report of its Central Board of Directors through its Annual Report 2013-14. Clearly, for FY 15 it has taken the signals provided by economic data in the first 3-4 months positively though there is admission that there is a base effect that has provided some impetus to these numbers.

The Indian economy stands at crossroads that could take it from a slow bumpy lane to a faster highway. Some acceleration is likely in 2014-15 that could take the growth to around 5.5 %. Deficiency in rainfall during the 2014 monsoon season so far poses some downside risks, but overall growth in 2014-15 is likely to be better than previous year with likely revival in industrial and construction activities. The improvement in the monsoon since midJuly will also help contain crop output losses. With greater political stability and a supportive policy framework, investment could turn around. The economy is poised to make a shift to a higher growth trajectory.

INFUSES CONFIDENCE

By Deepak Sahijwala

Y15 has begun on a promising note “with IIP growth beginning to look up, while inflation on an average, so far, has been lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year. Export growth has improved, while capital inflows remain adequate.

Further, there has been a healthy accretion to foreign exchange reserves that helps insulate the economy against prospective shocks that may be transmitted onshore” believes the Reserve bank of India. And this belief has extended through

India Inc as also the stock markets, both of which are reflecting optimism of the highest order. The markets are at all time highs, while corporate India is readying to capitalise on the changing times. According to the RBI “GDP growth is expected to be around 5.5% in 201415 from the sub 5% growth in the preceding two years and basis these on the positive signals, which include Signs of improvement in mining and manufacturing activity; Expected pickup in investment. Improved availability of financial resources to private sector; Lower draft of government on financial savings of the households amid fiscal consolidation; improved external demand and stabilizing global commodity prices, expected to support recovery”. However, the central bank has taken note of the downside risks that could play out if global recovery slows, geopolitical tensions intensify or monsoon weakens again in the rest of the season. Deficiency in rainfall during the 2014 monsoon season so far poses some downside risks, but overall growth in FY15 is likely to be better than previous year with likely revival in industrial and construction activities. Its Inflation outlook assessment remains unchanged and the RBI has reaffirmed that it is committed to a disinflationary glide path of taking CPI inflation to 8 % by January 2015 and 6% by January 2016 although it believes that some stability in the exchange rate has mitigated the risk to inflation from exchange rate passthrough during FY15 so far. Going forward, the RBI seems confident that the fiscal deficit is likely to reduce further in FY15. “The budgetary targets are realizable, though con-

certed efforts will be necessary to achieve these targets” it says, adding that “though the CAD is likely to widen from the levels in 2013-14, it is expected to remain within the sus-

The report titled 'Assessing the Costs of Climate Change and Adaptation in South Asia' predicts Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka will see an average annual economic loss of 1.8 % of their collective GDP by 2050, rising sharply to 8.8 % by 2100, reports PTI. "Without changes to current global behavior, India would see economic losses equivalent to 1.8 % of annual GDP by 2050, widening to 8.7 % by the end of the century." But if mitigation and adaptation steps are taken to keep the temper-

ature rise below 2 degrees Celsius, the damage could be kept below 2 % by 2100, it said. "Agriculture provides employment and livelihood opportunities to most of India's rural population and changes in temperature and rainfall, and an increase in floods and droughts linked to climate change, would have a devastating impact on people's food security, incomes, and lives," said Bindu Lohani, ADB Vice-President for Knowledge Management and Sustainable Development. Changes in rainfall patterns are likely to benefit rice output in most north-eastern states, however southern states could see annual yields decline by 5 % in 2030s, 14.5

However, there are challenges ahead and these include lowering high food inflation through supply side management; Strengthening the monetary policy framework and transmission; ensuring Fiscal adjustment through revenue augmentation and improved tax administration which will help to control the deficit and managing the NPA cycle to improve soundness of the banking system. Yet, it seems with the proactive approach of the RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan and his team, these challenges can be met. Care Ratings Economist Madan Sabnavis and Associate Economist Garima Mehta are of the view that “There are signs of a pick-up in the economy”. In an analysis of the RBI Annual Report, Care Ratings believes “GDP growth will range between 5.2-5.5% and a clear view will emerge when the impact of monsoon on kharif crop is obtained”. It goes on to say “Industrial growth will move upwards and range between 3-4%. A critical element will be the revival of consumer demand during the festival and harvest seasons. So far industrial growth has not been broad based and influenced more by the base effect. While there is positive news on the investment front at the level of clearance of projects as well as fresh investment being envisaged, there has not been much traction in the debt and credit markets so far. We need to wait and watch developments in these segments”. It believes “Inflation pressures continue to exist and while stable oil prices and exchange rate is a big

plus for the economy, the gradual increase in prices of manufactured goods and the uncertainty of crop production will have to be assessed. Based on present developments, WPI inflation will average 5-6% and CPI inflation 7-8% during the year”. On other factors Care is of the view that “Fiscal deficit will move along the desired path and it is unlikely that there will be a breach in deficit and hence any additional borrowing. However, growth in tax receipts will provide a clue on whether the government will be able to keep up with the targeted capex for the year. CAD, as mentioned by the RBI will be higher than last year, though sustainable. CARE’s initial estimate was around 2.5%, but the present trends in trade deficit for the first 4 months appear to suggest that it could be lower and move closer to 2%. The rupee would continue to range between Rs 60-62/$ and our position has not changed since April. GSec yields will be driven by developments on the monetary policy front and presently a range of 8.6-8.8% is expected to prevail though any rate cut or signs of a possible cut on account of inflation easing will lower the range to 8.4-8.6%”. Overall, it means, for India to secure a sustainable growth of at least 7 % over the medium term, micro-economic policies that improve activity levels and productivity will be needed so that they can work in tandem with a supportive macroeconomic regime with a reasonably positive real interest rate, low inflation, moderate CAD and low fiscal deficit.

The country has 8,000 km of coastline and nearly half the country's 28 states could face serious consequences from a rise in the sea level, with Gujarat expected to suffer the highest level of inundation, and Maharashtra the largest number of affected people

local springs and streams, essential to villages and livestock grazing. Higher temperatures and prolonged droughts will put immense strain on limited water resources and increase competition between agriculture and energy sectors. The cost of climate change adaptation in South Asia will depend largely on how the global community tackles the issue. "...If the world continues on its current path, South Asia will need to spend at least USD 73 billion, or an average of 0.86 % of its GDP, every year between now and 2100 on adaptation measures," it said. On the other hand, if countries act together to keep the rise in global temperatures below 2.5 degree Celsius, the cost of shielding the region from the worst of the impacts would be nearly halved to around USD 40.6 billion, or 0.48 % of GDP," it said.

USD/INR Movement Is About Global Risk Appetite Afternoon Despatch & Courier

ndian domestic economy is looking stable enough however it is important to note all the recent moves in USDINR has been linked to global factors and not local factors. 180 day correlation of INR with Brazilian Real is 87%, Korean Won 77% and Philippines Peso 67% shows that causes of movements are mostly global. The reason for such correlation is understandable since INR continues to be a current account deficit country where the deficit is funded by capital inflows. Capital Inflows have a tendency of moving in tandem to all the emerging markets and risky assets and is significantly impacted by the global risk-

off / risk-on scenario. While India's current account defict will be contained below 2.00% of GDP in all likelihood and other factors like growth, political stability, reform are becoming positive slowly and steadily, the dependence on foreign capital continues to be a risk. Hence USDINR movements are not about Indian economy at this stage but mostly about global risk appetite making it important to read mind of Federal Recerve. With the steroid of liquidity and no sign of stopping by Central Banks of the developed world, financial market’s risk appetite significantly high. Dow, Sensex all quoting close to their life time highs and US 10 year bond at 2.42% only. Most emerging market currencies are stronger today with increase in carry trades. Carry trades are most natural result of significant interest rate differential amongst global economies where higher yields are earned by assuming currency risk.

monetary policy - Improvement in US growth, inflation, labour market etc will increase expectation of early rate hike but such changing expectation can topple financial markets across the world including India. 2. Slowing global growth specially Euro zone Latest data from Germany, France, Japan shows slowing growth and even contraction in Oil price is not a good news since that shows slowing growth. Slow global growth with limited availability of policy tools in the hands of policy makers across the world is a threat. 3. Geo political risks with possible adverse

ver the previous week, Rupee registered gains across the board. Rupee gained not only against the US Dollar to trade at a month high of 60.40/42 levels but also touched month's high against the Euro GB Pound and the Japanese Yen. Globally, US Dollar has had a mixed performance, strengthening against the low yielding currencies like Canadian Dollar, Euro, GB Pound, Swiss Franc and the Yen, but weakened or remained flat against the currencies in the EM and Asian space. Rupee turned out to be amongst the top three performers over the last couple of weeks. Over the last one week, around USD 2.5/3.00 billion has been the inflow in the debt and equity segments in India. FDI as well as FCCB/ECB deals have started showing signs of pickup. Due to these strong inflows Rupee has continued to

strengthen. Globally, risky assets, like equity and high yield debt have done exceedingly well and unless and until we do not see a strain on that front, it will be difficult for the Dollar to score sustained gains the Indian Rupee. Going forward, though RBI might well provide a floor to the US Dollar, but we need to remember that accumulation of foreign exchange reserves is not a free lunch. Every US Dollar the RBI purchases, it needs to prints fresh Rupees into the system, that is currently around 60,000/61,000 crore rupees for every USD 1 billion they buy. Remember, increasing supply of money is inflationary, as that money eventually finds it way either into real assets and/or into financial assets. With India facing structural inflation, from capacity constrained economy, inadequate agricultural infrastructure and inflationary policies of central bank and government, further inflationary push at this point in time is not very desirable. Therefore, the central bank might need to sterilise the purchases, by selling govt. bonds or Govt short term debt to mop up the extra Rupees in the system. RBI is currently having a 6.68 lakh crore Rupees of investment in the Indian government bonds, which they use effectively to mop up over USD 100 billion of forex purchases. However, every bond that RBI sells from its investments in the open market, it not only reduces the interest earnings of RBI but also creates more supply of GOI bonds in the markets, thereby exerting an upward pressure on the gov-

ernment bond yields. In the Euro zone, the first print of the manufacturing sector surveys from Markit (PMI) for the month of August showed weakening trend. However, services PMI was much better. In US economic data continued to throw positive surprise, as PMI manufacturing and Philly Fed manufacturing surveys were much strong than expected by the market. At the same time, in US unemployment claims continued to drop. As long as US economic strength continues, we can expect US Dollar to benefit from the anticipation of reversal of US Fed policy. Speaking at the central bankers conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming on Friday, US Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen said, “If progress in the labor market continues to be more rapid than anticipated by the Committee or if inflation moves up more rapidly than anticipated, resulting in faster convergence toward our dual objectives, then increases in the federal funds rate target could come sooner than the Committee currently expects and could be more rapid thereafter. Of course, if economic performance turns out to be disappointing and progress toward our goals proceeds more slowly than we expect, then the future path of interest rates likely would be more accommodative than we currently anticipate.” At the same conference, ECB chief Mario Draghi hinted at no early commencement of the asset purchase program or QE, as he believes that it is not just the monetary policy which can

Traders to take cues from economic data releases this week stimulate growth in Euro zone, but a combination of monetary policy, fiscal push and structural reforms is needed. He further emphasised that monetary policy has its limits and hence can not be regarded as the panacea. ECB chief also said that that infation is Euro zone is being suppressed by the temporary factors like geopolitical unrest in central Asia and lower oil prices. Therefore, he does not see the risk of deflation in the Euro zone. However we think, if one parses through the various economic indicators across the Euro zone periphery as debt deflation is very much ongoing in many of these countries. With German 10 year bond yielding sub-1%, there is acceptance from the market about the lack of growth in the region. However, the dovish policies of ECB does make Euro an unattractive currency to hold. Over the next week, traders will pay close attention to a number of economic data points from the developed world, along with our GDP estimate for Q1 FY14. As far Rupee goes, we can expect it stay ranged between 60.00/60.30 and 60.70/85 region. Incase, the pair can manage to move above 60.85 and sustain, we can expect a run towards 61.30/50 region. Process-Oriented Customer Service Prescription

Set internal and external standards

very organisation must have a set of Customer Service standards, which will serve as a road map for the Customer Service Professional. If these are not set forth, the Customer Service Professional will be directionless and at sea when dealing with the customer. The customer service standards must be set in a policy form and a wholehearted attempt must be made to meet and exceed them. My Prescription, ProcessOriented Customer Service Prescription, is a series of actions or proceedings that are geared towards achieving something. Customer satisfaction can be measured in terms of satisfaction levels. But you have to set Customer Service standards first so that they can be measured and subsequently improved upon. There are two types of Customer Service Standards: internal and external. Internal Customer Service standards are for internal customers, or employees, to meet or exceed so that they can in turn meet and exceed the standards set for external customers, thereby ensuring customer satisfaction if the Customer Service standards are met and ensuring delight if the Customer Service standards are exceeded. This requires a process of setting standards so as to meet or exceed the standards. This is what I mean by my Process-Oriented Customer Service Prescription. When a courier company promises its customers that it would ensure delivery of their packages by 10 a.m the next day, they are setting an external Customer Service standard. To ensure that this actually happens, internal Customer Service standards would first have to be set up. Thus, the pick-up time would be designated and there would be a cut-off time for the package to reach the hub. All these are internal Customer Service standards. Finally, from the hub, the package gets delivered to the customer by 10 a.m. This is the external Customer Service standard. Please note that in order to enable one external Customer Service Standards, there are several internal Customer Service standards that have to be met. And both internal and external Customer Service standards are measurable with persons who are accountable for meeting each and every one of them. As you can see, it is important to practise the Process-Oriented Customer Service Prescription so that the company can meet and exceed both internal and external Customer Service standards. In my opinion, standards must be set and standards must be met. Copyright © 2013, All rights reserved. Jagdeep Kapoor can be contacted at jk@samsika.com

andhiji’s greatest fear was that he would hate the British. Nelson Mandela worried that he would hate his oppressors. The Buddha asks us to see the divine radiance, the ‘Buddha’s nature’ in the face of a leper and a legend. The goals and concerns of the more evolved souls, is so different from those of that concern most of us. In tennis everything starts with “Love All”. In business, this concept can revolutionize the organization. The Dhammapada speaks of work being infused with increased helpfulness for beings and decreasing harmfulness. The Buddha asks that we a earn living by a way that causes no pain to any living creature. Many Buddhists will avoid professions which involve deceit, exploitation, killing, harming health, dealing in drugs, selling arms and ammunition and trafficking in human beings. Many will not get involved in fishing or anything to do with the leather trade. “You can live in the battlefield of the business world and still practice Dharma” says a Buddhist scholar. The Buddha once told the layman Dighajanu how to excel at work. There are four things to be mindful of: to be skilled efficient, energetic, earnest and learned in whatever profession one has; to conscientiously protect one’s income and one’s family’s means of support; to have virtuous, trustworthy, faithful friends; and to be spiritual.

Innovation Sutra: Looking at the opposite of conventional wisdom is future vision. Analyse carefully before acting.

Choose work you can love “I had started my business to impress my dad”, says the hero of the book, Dharam. He was always giving me hell for not being responsible and hard-working. He was a doctor; he earned all his money by charging $200 from rich, overweight, neurotic old ladies for giving simple common sense advice. I wanted to show him that I could earn a million dollars in a single day, on one deal. The old fart would shut up then. That’s how I became an investment banker on Wall Street. The pressure, the excitement, the floor of the bullring, and the partying afterward, did give me a kick. Then I started enjoying the perks—the willing women, meeting the big daddies. The adrenaline rush was exciting. But I couldn’t say I chose it because it was a vocation, or because it gave me joy. In fact I could never connect joy with investment banking, the quick buck. I heard from Professor Athreya Arya in Nalanda. (He was waiting for the university to open, and trying to help, like many others.) Meanwhile, he agreed to teach me about right livelihood in Buddhism; it stopped me short. My heart was thumping when I realized with a pang that in my life I had done the exact opposite of what would have made me happy. The professor started his first lesson far from home, with a quote from Kahlil Gibran. ‘When you work, you are a flute in whose heart the whispering of the hours turn to music. To love life through labour is to be intimate with life’s most intimate secret. All work is empty save when there is love, for work is love made visible.’ I walked out into the cool, dew-wet forest at dawn and thought about this sacred thought. I, who had got engaged for money and treated my fiancée mostly like a cash cow to fund my business, felt such nausea for my wasted youth that I just lay down on the grass and allowed the earth to calm me in her arms. The stars came out,

INDIA IS A FERTILE MARKET FOR BUILDING VALUABLE BRANDS A recent BrandZ India study shows that India’s unrestricted ‘right to play’ for businesses has nurtured great diversity amongst brands in the ranking. The Top 50 come from 13 different categories. Seventeen are multi-national corporations (MNCs), 26 are private Indian brands and seven are state-owned brands. This indicates that India is an open, fertile market for building valuable brands, irrespective of age, origin, structure, category, ownership or even price range.

“T

By Dominic Rebello he stronger the relationship a brand can build with consumers in its category, and the more it can leverage that to build scale, the more sustainable and profitable it becomes. All of the Top 50 brands are reputable, successful engines of growth for the future of India. Any global manufacturer that makes the effort to understand the diversity of the Indian consumer’s needs, tastes and aspirations, and which can build a proposition that is both meaningful and appropri-

ately differentiated, will succeed in building a strong brand” says Prasun Basu, Millward Brown’s Managing Director – South Asia He was commenting on the first ever BrandZ Top 50 Most Valuable Indian Brands ranking announced recently. According to the findings, the combined Brand Value of all the brands in the ranking is almost $70bn. HDFC Bank is India’s most valuable brand, with a value of $9.4bn. Carried out by marketing and brand consultancy Millward Brown in conjunction with WPP, the valuation is the only one in India that takes into account consumers’

opinion of brands to calculate the contribution that product brands make to business success. HDFC Bank, the No.1 brand, has a network in more than 2,100 cities. It is popular with its 28 million customers for launching mobile apps designed to make banking easier, and running literacy, education and skills training programmes in rural areas. The No.2 brand, Airtel, is the fourth largest mobile operator in the world with nearly 300 million customers, while India’s largest commercial bank, State Bank of India, is at No.3 in the ranking. Services businesses (Banking, Telecoms and Insurance), which are the nerve centre of today’s Indian economy, are prominent in the ranking. Seven of the Top 10 brands, and 30% of the Top 50 brands, come from the service sector. Financial services stand out, with the 12 banks and insurers in the ranking holding the largest proportion (37%) of total Brand Value. Analysis shows these brands have built value by successfully achieving scale – both in geographical reach and the diversity of their offerings. Telecoms, Personal Care, and the Food and Dairy sectors also feature strongly in the Top 50. The data shows that these brands – along

bright as chrysanthemums, and the full moon hung low in the sky. I got up just to eat my curd rice and went to bed. How could the Lebanese poet know so much about the sacredness of work? I went out and bought his book The Prophet, and turned to the chapter on work. ‘What is it to work with love?’ a seeker asks the Prophet. ‘It is to weave the cloth from the strings of your heart as though your beloved were to wear it,’ says the master. I remembered the way my mother used to spend hours in her beautiful garden, coming inside later, flushed, sweating and happy as a child, to supervise things in the kitchen. There were always bhajans playing in the kitchen and dining room. Hers surely was a work of love. But could one be like that in the dog-eat-dog world of investment banking? I asked my professor. He laughed aloud and said, ‘Why don’t you leave that life to mad dogs. Even normal dogs don’t eat other dogs! And you are no mad dog!’

Had I made a critical mistake in my choice of profession? Professor Arya was very particular about sustainable business models which included relationships with all stakeholders. This meant being fair to all concerned and working for the benefit of the whole community. It sounded very other-worldly, most unlike anything they said about building the competitive edge, or the killer instinct, so important to being aggressive. ‘Eat or be eaten’ was the law of the corporate jungle. What was he talking about? I told him this and he was really amused. He said that one should earn a living by causing minimal pain to other living creatures. How do you find work that could help you practise the love of others in every action? The Dhammapada speaks of work being infused with increasing helpfulness for beings and decreasing harmfulness. My professor spoke of harmful professions, which involve deceit, exploitation, killing, harming health, dealing in drugs, selling arms and ammunition, trafficking human beings . . . I listened patiently to the long list, till he named junk-bond trading as a poor choice of livelihood. I really needed to find a new business. ‘You can live in the battlefield of the business world and still practice Dharma,’ said the professor with a twinkle in his eye, as he retired for the day. I sat on the silent veranda and listened to the wind blowing through the trees. Soon I was fast asleep on the swing, something I had never done before. I thought I would think about practising the

right livelihood in my daily life and asked my teacher for examples. ‘Think about millions of homemakers like your mother,’ he said. My eyes filled with tears as I remembered her crawling into her room after all the lights were switched off at midnight daily, only to wake up again at 5 a.m. to open the gate for the kolam to be drawn on the doorstep before the first rays of the sun hit the last step. Unpaid work, I thought, of her unconditional love; she surely had realized her Buddha-nature in a thousand acts of service for the family. How could we use our hands, heads, hearts and souls to make the world a better place? I thought of how I had seen my teachers carefully packing up broken glass to prevent it from hurting the hand of the garbage collector or the rag-picker children in the town dump yard. I learnt that the Dalai Lama was an expert at repairing watches and clocks. I thought of my widowed mathematics teacher helping me at his house before school and also giving me breakfast, before we both rushed out. Work provides a major opportunity to engage with the world. It is an opportunity to practice Dharma every minute of our lives. Alisha, a Mahayana mind trainer in Tibet, could mend shoes. The average Brand Contribution (a measure of the impact brand alone has on value) of the Top 5 brands is far higher than the overall average of the

Nifty Closes Above 7900 NSE India : CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Monday (August 25, 2014) By Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY:

The Nifty rose marginally on Friday (August 22, 2014) a net 22.10 points (0.28%) and closed at the 7913 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 7904 points level. It then rose sharply and registered the day’s high at the 7929 points level at 11.03 a.m. The index then declined and registered the day’s low at the 7900 points level at 12.39 p.m. It then rose and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained above its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 29 points and closed above the psychologically important 7900 points level for the first time. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 30 were gainers, while 20 were losers. Substantial buying was witnessed in IT, and banking stocks.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 3.11%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was neutral. Amongst all the traded stocks, 761 were gainers, 825 were losers and 35 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator is in the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is below the slow D line (negative if it continues).

RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is below zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market but with a neutral bias.

Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 7471 points level. The next support is at the 7321 points level.

Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance is at the 7896 points level was crossed above in the previous session. The next resistance is at the 7954 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 7914 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 7899. Support (2) = 7885. Resistance (1) = 7928. Resistance (2) = 7943. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a second consecutive doji pattern. This indicates that the indecisiveness amongst investors continues. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the index is above its 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the four averages are rising and also positively trended. Further, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. Moreover, the index has crossed above a major resistance level at the 7896 points level. All these indicate a positive bias. Investors are advised to hold long positions.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line and both lines are diverging (positive if it continues). The ADX is rising while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is increasing in strength.

MOVING AVERAGES (TREND INDICATORS) The index: Is above its 5-day average (at 7890) Positive. Is above its 15-day average (at 7750) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 7747) Positive. Is above its 200-day average (at 6785) Positive. All the four averages are positively trended. Positive. Firstsouce Solutions works with Fortune-500, FTSE-100 and several hospital groups in the US, the UK and India to deliver business process management services in healthcare, telecom & media, and banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) industries. Its service portfolio includes customer management, collections management and data processing, with assimilation of technology platforms and intellectual property (IP) assets, etc. Investment rationale: Back in the game’ as revamped senior team executes a well-crafted turnaround: We believe Firstsource Solutions is ‘back in the game’ strongly after a series of steps undertaken during the past 18 months. The steps include: (1) the exit from lowmargin domestic accounts and (2) improving operational factors (focus on improving seat-fill factor/utilization) along with focusing on the more profitable customer management and healthcare segment. These initiatives have already started bearing fruit in the form of a better revenue profile, thereby aiding improvement in margins (Firstsource’s EBITDA margin improved by 340bps over FY12-FY14). The company remains focused on chasing profitable growth in the global BPM industry. We expect it to witness a 3.8% and 11% revenue growth in FY15 and FY16E, respectively, as customer management services and healthcare vertical continue to grow for the company. We expect EBITDA margins to improve by around 230bps over FY1416E, driven by better revenue mix (read: lower mix of the domestic business), as it realizes the benefit of the exit from lower-margin Indian telco accounts, as well as better hedge rates ahead. We thereby estimate EBITDA margins at 13%/14% in FY15/16 as against 11.7% in FY14. Further, given the improved focus and management commitment to repay US$45mn of outstanding debt annually, we estimate that Firstsource would be able to repay more than 85% of its outstanding debt by endFY17E. Buy with a target price of Rs 50

KARVY CALLS A ‘BUY’ ON REPCO HOME FINANCE

CMP: Rs. 432 Target Rs. 548 Structurally, Repco Home Finance Ltd. (RHFL) is well-positioned to sustain high growth momentum with best in class return ratios. Superior execution skill demonstrated by the current management team in shaping the current business has put the company on strong growth path. Over the next few years, we expect RHFL sanctions, disbursements and loan book to grow at a robust pace, which is likely to be driven by expansion in branch network, increasing urbanization and shift towards nuclear family. We expect loan book to sustain the 25-30% growth trajectory for the next two years. Further, profits of RHFL are expected to grow 30-35% primarily owing to lower NPA’s, superior margin profile and low cost operating model. We initiate coverage with “BUY” recommendation. Strong presence in niche segment offers enormous growth opportunities: RHFL has a strong franchise in GDP rich southern and western India along with long-term sustainable business model. Differential business model aid stable NIM’s: With primary focus on underserved borrower segment, it is catering to the increasing needs of customers in Tier -2 and Tier-3 cities along with satellite towns of tier-1 cities. This helps the company to command relatively higher yield on loans resulting in stable and healthy NIM’s of ~4.5%. Lean Operating model to contain operating cost: Majority of the RHFL branches operate on minimal cost with a team of 2-3 local people. Further, administrative costs are also lower as loan processing and monitoring are done from the centralized location. This helps the company to maintain the cost to income ratio to below 19%. Initiating Coverage with BUY: Target Price Rs548/share: We expect Repco Home Finance to continue to command a premium valuation over its other peers due to superior return ratios along with niche business model, high capitalization & good execution. We initiate converge on the company with a BUY stance and a target price of Rs548/share, (3.25x FY16E BV of Rs169). Please send all business and corporate related mails to business@afternoondc.in

I am confused between MaxBupa and Apollo Munich can you help me on which one I should go for? I want a cover for myself (age 44) and my wife. I want comprehensive and maximum coverage and no * and strings policy so that I can renew for life and it should take care of all my medical exigencies... any suggestion would be of great help. —Raja Puri, Parel Both Max Bupa and Apollo Munich are very good options and most policies in both these companies can be continued for life. You can surely consider Apollo Munich Easy Health Premium Plan which can be taken till Rs 50 Lakh of coverage. Manager in the 4th year after license expiry. But even in the 4th year, if you are unable to do the MBG or at least 12 lives or Rs 1 Lakh of Premium, then your agency would get permanently terminated. There's no such rule as per IRDA but the insurance company or the branch may impose certain norms. Renewal commission would be payable since you have completed 5 years in the company even if you do not do even 1 policy as per IRDA.

I have an Aviva Life Shield Platinum (offline) 50L purchased in 2010. I am planning to take another 50L through Aviva I life (Online). I have checked many websites/ experts panels they say Aviva is having only 89% claim settlement ratio. Should I go for some other better insurers? My concern is would it be better if I have a policy with the same insurer? —Ganesh Yadav, Parel It’s not that you must go with other insurance company only because the Claim Settlement Ratio is lower in Aviva. In fact, you must only concentrate to state loads of correct facts in your proposal form irrespective of the Insurance Company you are applying for. If you do not state the truth at the time of policy inception, then even if the Claim Settlement Ratio of the company is very high, you might not get your claim settled as there is misrepresentation or non- disclosure of material facts. On the other hand, if you disclose all correct information at the time of policy inception then even if the claim settlement ratio is bad, your claim will get admitted. As far as your case is concerned, operationally it will be easier since you have only 1 insurance company, claim admitted will be operationally easier. So, yes your decision makes sense. LIC for doing minimum business? —Sachin Singh, Parel It totally depends on the LIC Branch you are associated with. According to an internal policy of LIC, there is a Minimum Business amount that an agent needs to do every year to retain his agency. According to the rules of LIC, you need to do at least: 1st year- Minimum 6 lives and Rs 50000 FPI 2nd year- Minimum 6 lives and Rs 50000 FPI By the end of the 3rd year, you need to do a Minimum 36 lives and Rs 3 lakhs FPI cumulatively in the last 3 years. Grand alliance or grand contradiction?

Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | MONDAY, AUGUST 25, 2014

Dr. Manish Kumar

T

he contradictions of the grand alliance started coming to the fore even before the recent by-elections had taken place in Bihar. More than one year is still left before Assembly elections are due in Bihar, but a dispute in the grand-alliance has already started over who will be the next Chief Minister. Actually, this grand alliance of Lalu Yadav, Nitish Kumar and Congress is a bundle of contradictions. To make this grand alliance successful, the contradictions will have to be smoothed out. In the recent by-elections for 10 seats, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)-Janata Dal (United) (JDU) candidates were on 4-4 seats, while the Congress fought from 2 seats. For the grand alliance to be successful, they would have had to win 8 out of 10 seats. If there was a tie, that is, they got only 5 seats, then the experiment of this grand alliance would not be considered successful and if this grand alliance would have got less than 5 seats, then an early end to this experiment – after the by-elections itself, was predicted. Caught as it was in such contradictions, challenges and expectations, there was no scope for even the smallest of mistakes right from the very outset. It was the assertion even

then that one small mistake and one irresponsible statement could change the politics of Bihar forever. If the relation of elections was only with figures and numbers, then in Bihar the result of the 2015 Assembly elections would have been known today itself. Many political analysts and veterans writing in newspapers forecast that the grand alliance of Lalu-Nitish-Congress in Bihar was an unstoppable alliance.

(United) (JDU) got 15.8 per cent votes and the Congress got 8.4 per cent votes. This, it was argued, means that if the votes of Lalu, Nitish and the Congress are added together, then they became 44.3 per cent, which is much more than the votes that the BJP alliance garnered. It was belief in this argument that led Lalu Yadav, Nitish Kumar and the Congress to enter into this grand alliance to defeat the BJP. They were confident that this was the

Lalu Yadav and Nitish Kumar Many TV channels, too, on the basis of figures and numbers gave this argument. According to them, in the Lok Sabha elections, in the BJP alliance, the BJP got 29.4 per cent votes, Ram Vilas Paswan’s party, the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), got 6.4 per cent votes and Upendra Kushwaha’s party, the Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP) got 3 per cent votes. It means that in totality the BJP alliance got 38.3 per cent votes, whereas Lalu Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) got 20.1 per cent votes, Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal

only way to stop the BJP. But the thing to understand is this: that the relation of elections is more with algebra than arithmetic. In every election, there is an X factor which decides victory and defeat. It is those political parties and analysts who are successful in identifying this X factor who make correct election assessments and only they understand the pulse of the people. The paradigm of politics in Bihar has changed. In Bihar, before 2005, for 15 years there was an era of darkness. There was

Lalu Yadav’s monopolistic rule. When he got entangled in the fodder scam, then he made his wife Rabri Devi the Chief Minister. Neither was there any protest at this, nor were any feathers ruffled. In Bihar there was no rule of law; there was jungle rule. Criminal activities were of and at a level which people from outside Bihar, if told about them, would not believe. The Government machinery had become inactive. The police didn’t have any major role, because heinous crimes like murder, kidnapping, ransom, loot and rape were executed openly. In that era of darkness, all this had become a part of life. People were fed up and terrified. Even today while remembering Lalu era, the people of Bihar get goose bumps. But whenever elections used to take place, Lalu Yadav used to win easily. On one hand was an indomitable Muslim vote bank; on the other hand was domination of party leaders. No opponent could stand in the field. Against this jungle rule only the Nitish Kumar led Janta United Dal and the Bharatiya Janata Party alliance got people’s support. People isolated Lalu Yadav from the politics of Bihar. His party has had to continually see the face of defeat. In the last Assembly elections, Lalu Yadav couldn’t win even the requisite number of seats to claim the post of Leader of Opposition. The question now is, will Lalu Yadav in the next one year be able to get rid of the image of jungle raj from people’s mind? Will the common people of Bihar be able to trust Lalu Yadav? In Bihar, if the recently formed grand alliance survives, then to win elections, this is the first and last condition.

his help. The then Chief Minister Narendra Modi lifted up his eyes, looked at Ambani and said ‘Mukesh bhai (brother), I was thinking that you wanted to make a Rs.10,000 crore investment in Gujarat and had therefore come to meet me. Where are you talking about acquisition of this Rs.1000-1200 crore company. Talk about yourself, don’t raise a

to be discussed, that had to be discussed. Modi said that if you had to talk, you could have called Mukesh Ambani to your office, what is the need to go to his place? ‘Anyway, you can go, there is a file lying on your table for your signature’. When Pradhan returned to his office, there was a file lying on his table for his signature. It was a file imposing a

I

n the same way that stories spread in olden times about how kings and emperors ventured out in disguise to learn about the situation, conditions, circumstances of their subjects, stories similar to those are nowadays doing the rounds of the corridors in Delhi’s North Block and South Block. These stories are being told not only in connection to Prime Minister Narendra Modi improving the administration, but also the way of working of the Cabinet. We are keeping some of those stories before you. The first story is from the time of Narendra Modi coming to Delhi from Gujarat. India’s renowned businessman, Mukesh Ambani, went to Modi and during talks with Modi said that he wanted to acquire a Rs.1200 crore company and in that he wanted

finger against someone else’. It was obvious that Ambani returned from there empty handed. The second incident also concerns Mukesh Ambani. Modi became the Prime Minister. He called his minister Dharmendra Pradhan for a meeting and said to him that you are meeting Mukesh Ambani quite a lot and are going to his place to have lunch. Pradhan must have said that this had

fine of 579 million dollars on Mukesh Ambani. Pradhan had to sign that file and a fine of 579 million dollars was imposed on Mukesh Ambani. The third story linked to Narendra Modi that is doing the rounds concerns Rajnath Singh. He called for Rajnath Singh to come and meet him. Exactly 15 minutes before that he called Rajnath Singh’s son Pankaj Singh to

come and meet him. Pankaj Singh, bouquet in hand, very happily went to meet Prime Minister Modi. He was made to wait for 15 minutes by Narendra Modi, by which time Rajnath Singh also reached to meet him. Narendra Modi said to Pankaj Singh that I have deliberately called your father. Pankaj Singh tried to present the bouquet of flowers he had brought, but Narendra Modi did not accept the bouquet of flowers. He merely said, ‘the person from whom you took money the day before, return his money to him today itself’. Pankaj Singh left the Prime Minister’s Office with his head bowed. After this, the Prime Minister said to Rajnath Singh, ‘this information is not in the corridors of power’. The fourth story revolves round Shri Ram Vilas, that Ram Vilas Paswan left Delhi for Patna and with him went a lot of people in the train. At Tundla Narendra Modi got to know about it. At Tundla station, police and Railway officials surrounded the train and got those who did not have valid tickets for the journey to disembark from the train. These stories connected to Narendra Modi are adding link after link to themselves.

DILLI KA BABU A big vacuum The quiet exit of the brilliant Nehchal Sandhu, Deputy National Security Advisor, “for personal reasons” more than 20 months ahead of his scheduled departure, took many by surprise. While it is being seen as part of Modi sarkar’s ongoing purge of UPA appointees in the uppermost echelons of the Government, whispers suggest that Sandhu quit because in a rare display of esprit de corps – out of loyalty to two other colleagues (who incidentally were UPA appointees) who retired from the National Security Council Secretariat, Ajit Lal, Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Council (JIC) and Lt General (retired) Prakash Menon, military adviser to the NSA. A p p a r e n t l y, Modi was rather keen to retain Sandhu’s services but Sandhu had made up his mind to put in his papers. Reportedly, Modi even gave him a commendation letter, praising the former Intelligence Bureau director. Clearly, Sandhu’s successor and former IFS officer Arvind Gupta has some big shoes to fill.

A comeback tale It’s a remarkable comeback from the being out in the cold to becoming Chief Secretary. And all in a matter of four years! When Prithviraj Chavan became Chief Minister of Maharashtra four years ago, among his first steps was to remove 1980-batch IAS officer Swadheen Kshatriya from the post of Municipal Commissioner, a decision that shocked many at the time, since Kshatriya was known as a good administrator. Observers believed that his career was as good as over. But the babu belied expectations by impressing his political masters as Revenue Secretary, where he reportedly ushered in many innovative citizen-friendly schemes. Still, many are surprised that Chavan ignored the seniority principle in selection of the new Chief Secretary after the retirement of G.S. Saharia, and chose to name a babu who he had once removed rather unceremoniously four years ago. It’s a comeback that will probably be remembered for a long time in Maharashtra’s babu corridors.

Days gone by It is turning out to be a season for washing dirty linen, there is anothermemoir which promises to enjoy a longer shelf-life than today’s “best-sellers”. Former civil servant and a giant of the sprawling public sector, V. Krishnamurthy’s book 'At the Helm: A Memoir' is a veritable ringside view of the growth of the public sector and Krishnamurthy’s ascent to become the nation’s most powerful technocrat in the Indira and Rajiv Gandhi era. Krishnamurthy successfully steered PSU giants like BHEL, SAIL and Maruti. His tale should be essential reading for not just babus and all those who want to understand times before we woke up to economic liberalisation. — Dilip Cherian

Set in a future Earth (2035 A.D.) where robots are common assistants and workers for their human owners, this is the story of “robotophobic” Chicago Police Detective Del Spooner’s investigation into the murder of Dr. Alfred Lanning, who works at U.S. Robotics, in which a robot, Sonny , appears to be implicated, even though that would mean the robot had violated the Three Laws of Robotics, which is apparently impossible. It seems impossible because.. if robots can break those laws, there’s nothing to stop them from taking over the world, as humans have grown to become completely dependent upon their robots. Or maybe... they already have? Aiding Spooner in his investigation is a psychologist, Dr. Susan Calvin, who specializes in the psyches of robots. Star Movies, 9 p.m.

Priya Marathe in a lawyer’s role

MUMBAI | MONDAY, AUGUST 25, 2014

Priya Marathe is best known for her role as Varsha in the television series 'Pavitra Rishta' on ZEE. She made her television debut with 'Ya Sukhano Ya,' and eventually went on to appear in several other Marathi series. Now Priya is all set to star in her most interesting role of a lawyer who fights cases on behalf of the underdogs in the Mahesh Kothare written and directed show ‘Jayastute’ on STAR PRAVAH which starts on August 25, MondayWednesday from 10 pm to 11 pm. We got to know more about the show from Priya By Sandeep Hattangadi

Were you the first choice for the character of a firebrand lawyer in the show? No. In fact the production team of the show and writer director Mahesh Kothare had done a lot of auditions for the role but it was ultimately I who fitted the bill perfectly for the fiery lawyer called Pragati Rajwade who takes up cudgels for those who can’t fight injustice or court cases on their own and at times even forfeiting her fees. She is ready to fight for a client for a nominal

fee of Re 1 if the client is unable to pay her fees. What kind of cases will you be shown fighting? Everything right from domestic cases to criminal cases to civil cases or cases in the High Court or the Supreme Court to consumer courts or public litigation cases. I have been ingrained about fighting cases honestly and sincerely right from my childhood to put at ease clients who are afraid of the loop holes in the judiciary. Who else is in the cast?

Girish Pardesi, Uma Sardeshmukh, Sneha Mhatre, Ruturaj Fadke etc. It’s a great team.

How many episodes will you be appearing in? The show will definitely run on air for a year with at-least 200 episodes and the rest depends on how well the show fares with the viewers.

You played a vampish role in your previous show ‘Tu Tithe Mee’ and now you are playing a lawyer? Yes. I like to portray a gamut of roles and I like to do comedy as well.

‘I am unfit for romance on-screen’ Says self-effacing funster Kapil Sharma who is literally going places internationally with his ‘Colors’ TV comedy show By Chaitanya Padukone

Are you already bored with the desi audiences that you are going global with your popular late night (‘Colors’) TV show ‘Comedy Nites with Kapil’? Aarey nahin baba, all my Indian fans are my life-lines. We need to also prove that we are world-class in comedy showmanship. Beginning with Dubai, early next month, we will be touring extensively and performing our ‘live’ comedy shows in various countries including Canada, US, UK and even Australia and New Zealand.

You are whole-heartedly promoting singer-actor Raja Hasan’s Rajasthani upcoming musical movie ‘Marudhar Mharo Ghar’, at events and even in your TV show? There is absolutely no commercial interest. It is pure friendly sentiments which has urged me to support my buddy Raja. Both of us have been jigri dost ever since we struggled together when he was singing as a finalist for ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’ and I was aspiring to break through with Laughter Challenge on TV. We even did comedy shows together.

Go on... Honestly, I was highly impressed by all the promos of Raja Hasan’s Rajasthani venture ‘Marudhar Mharo Ghar’ which incidentally is directed by an eminent Maharashtrian director Nilesh Malkar and produced by Raja’s father Rafik Sagar. I am told that the story has a strong social and political message. It is heartening that Raja who not only has composed and sung, makes his acting debut as a ‘tourist guide’ opposite a vivacious tourist foreigner actress Katrina (from Serbia) who during her research on Rajasthani culture eventually falls in love with Raja’s vibrant character.

In your upcoming untitled hush-hush movie with directors Abbas-Mustan, will you be romancing any heroine on-screen ? (Chuckles). It's better that I leave the romance portions to someone else. What I indulge in during my 'Comedy Nites' shows, is mastimazaak aur kameenapan. Although, girls may find me photogenic and handsome, I feel I am still unfit for romance onscreen. Let’s wait till my film actually goes on floor by November. Making people laugh has been my forte. Like breathing, it comes spontaneously to me.

TV TATTLE Dedicated to dad

TV actress Mouni Roy has dedicated her upcoming act on 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 7' to her father, whom she lost last year. Mouni, who is teamed with choreographer Punit, turned everyone emotional on the set with her performance on 'Jee Le Zara'. "My last conversation with my father was an argument we'd had. When I came to know of his hospitalisation, I'd lost him within seven hours. I still regret the last conversation with him,” Mouni said in a statement. Judges Madhuri Dixit, Karan Johar and Remo D'Souza were also moved by her act. Madhuri, who lost her father during the semi-final of Jhalak's last season, said, “I completely understand what you mean. I too lost my father last year.”

Guardian angels

Yesterday, Sophie and Deepak performed a hip hop act with their hands tied. The theme was dialogue week and they chose "yeh haath mujhe dede Thakur!" The judges loved the act and said it was very different and unique. Shahid and Shraddha who were there to promote 'Haider' loved the act, especially Sophie's moonwalk. In fact Shahid and Remo joined Sophie on stage to moonwalk. But the highlight was Shahid and Shraddha asking the audience for votes for Sophie with folded hands because Sophie's hands were tied and she couldn't.

Indian fashionista

Draped in beautiful hues, in her signature sarees, Kirron Kher is in talks for the distinctive style statement she exhibits as the sutradhar of the episodic series 'Kitni Girhain Baaki Hain' on Premium Hindi Entertainment channel Zindagi. For the show, Kirron Kher dons an ethnic look with raw silk sarees in bright colors and bold patterns that compliment the essence of the show gracefully. A touch of glamour has been added to her attire with exquisite oxidized silver jewelry pieces and she ties her hair in a low bun complete with the classic and evergreen accessory, a gajra.

Women power

After sweeping one and all by presenting an exceptional line-up of shows, Sony PAL, the upcoming Hindi GEC that promises to resonate with the ethos of the traditional yet modern Indian woman, is presenting a unique property ‘Yeh Pal Hamara Hai’ to celebrate and rejoice different shades of womanhood. The channel launches on September 1 and continuing these celebrations, Sony Pal will telecast ‘Yeh Pal Hamara Hain’ on the following weekend, September 7. The show hosted by television’s all-time favorite Jodi, Ragini Khanna and Jai Soni, will present some mesmerising performances by popular television celebrities.

Relationship advice

They say while two is company, three’s a crowd. This popular adage holds a different meaning in today’s day and age of complicated relationships. While infidelity and uncertainty are issues that today’s young generation is constantly grappling with, bindass’ new show ‘Pyaar Ka the End’ attempts to create awareness of such instances where love takes a wrong turn. Voicing his thoughts on such issues in the upcoming episode of the show, Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi will be seen giving the audiences advice on how to deal with such complex situations and prevent regretful actions.

Pak shells 25 BoPs, 19 hamlets along Jammu border

S

RINAGAR: Four suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba militants and two soldiers were today killed in two separate operations close to Line of Control in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir. Security forces had laid an ambush on Saturday night in Kalaroos area of Kupwara following an information about movement of militants in the area, an Army official told PTI. He said contact with the group of militants was established this morning and they were asked to surrender. "However, the ultras opened firing towards security forces' positions, which was retaliated, resulting in a gunbattle that lasted several hours," the official said. He said a search operation was carried out after the gun fire stopped and bodies of four militants were recovered. Four AK rifles and some ammunition were also recovered from the spot, he added. An Army soldier – Naik Neeraj Kumar Singh – sustained grievous injuries during the operation and was airlifted to 92 Base Hospital Srinagar, where he succumbed, the official said. The official said the militants were believed to be affiliated to LeT. According to an Army spokesman it was not yet clear whether the militants were infiltrating from or exfiltrating to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. "It can be ascertained only after analysing the recoveries affected from the slain terrorists," he said. In another operation in Keran sector, a jawan was killed in a brief gun-

EW DELHI: Amid controversy over the Leader of Opposition (LoP) post, anti-corruption activists have emphasised its importance saying that the post is essential to end the government's dominance in Lokpal selection panel. "In the absence of the LoP, the selection committee would be dominated by the central government - 3:1 with the judicial member being in a minority. Surely,

Militants spotted near IB on 3 occasions: BSF

In the wake of escalation in ceasefire violations along the Indo-Pak frontier in Jammu and Kashmir, BSF on Sunday said it has spotted armed terrorists "very close" to the IB on at least "three occasions" in the last few days and suspect the firings are an attempt to help them infiltrate into India.

Grenadier Rahul Kumar was injured in the operation and taken to military hospital at Drugmulla in Kupwara where he succumbed to injuries, an Army official said. Meanwhile Pakistani troops continued to violate the ceasefire by

shelling and firing upon 25 Border Out Posts (BoPs) and 19 villages along the International Border in Jammu sector throughout Saturday night, prompting the BSF to retaliate. "Pak Rangers resorted to heavy firing of small and automatic weapons and shelling of mortars

bombs on 25 BoPs and civilian areas along IB in Arnia and R S Pura sub-sectors of Jammu district from 2030 hours last night" a BSF officer said on Sunday. BSF troops gave a befitting reply by responding strongly and the heavy exchanges continued till 0730 hours on Sunday.

LoP must for Lokpal selection, say activists this is not what Parliament had intended when it drew up the Lokpal selection process," said Venkatesh Nayak, an activist working for promoting the Right to Information (RTI) Act. The chairperson and members of Lokpal are to be selected by a committee headed by the Prime Minister and having four other

members -- the Lok Sabha Speaker, Leader of Opposition in the Lower House, the Chief Justice of India or a judge of the apex court nominated by him, and an eminent jurist who could be nominated by the President or any other member. "The fifth member must be an eminent jurist who may be nominated by all four

members including the LoP in Lok Sabha. So the LoP is an important member in the Lokpal selection panel and a necessity for all other statutory appointments," Nayak told PTI. Another activist, Ajay Dubey, also laid emphasis on the importance of LoP. "LoP acts as the voice of opposition. It is essential to end the

government's influence in the selection process of Lokpal and other authorities, and keep them fair," said Dubey of Transparency International. However, citing rules, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has conveyed to Congress that she was not in a position to give the party Leader of Opposition status because it fell short of the minimum 55 seats required for staking claim to the post. Hooda asks voters to avenge ‘insult’ at Modi’s function P

ANIPAT: Hooted by BJP workers in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi early this week, Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Sunday hit back asking people to avenge the ‘insult’ meted out to the state through the ballot in ensuing polls. "What happened at Kaithal, you all know... Though tit-for-tat is against our culture, but we will definitely avenge what happened there in a different way. "I request you to give them a befitting reply using your power of ballot in the assembly polls," he told a rally here. Hooda had faced hooting from a section of the crowd at the function attended by the prime minister in

Kaithal after laying the foundation stone of a highway project on August 19. A couple of days later, the prime Minister invited him for a cup of tea to placate him. The two-time Chief Minister said at the rally, where he announced sops for various sections of the people including farmers, that he had intelligence report that such a thing (hooting against him) could happen, reports PTI. "But I ignored that. I thought in PM's presence people will not do such a thing, but they did not even keep the sanctity of the PM's post. People of Haryana want to know who these people are and from where they have come," he said.

ARIES (March 21 - April 20): Demands are building up. But let it not shake your confidence. Carry on with your work with diligence and good fortune will smile on you. Discretion is advised in matters of finance, whether taking a loan, making a deal or in case of any investment. Insecurities creep into a bond that has weathered earlier storms. Perhaps you need more time together for reassurances.

TAURUS (April 21 - May 20): Benefits accrue through close relatives efforts. If having your own business, an uncle or an elder will help get you large orders with contract on long term basis. Youngsters about to start out in their career can join family business for they will not only add value but make a mark for themselves. Personal life is happy with atmosphere at home very cordial.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20): A good financial position is indicated. A purchase of some property or house will be an asset that you have been planning for long. If you have taken any loan earlier now is the time you can pay back and clear all the dues. Happiness and excitement is all around. In your daily routine you could meet someone interesting and strike a friendship. This could lead to an exciting romance.

CANCER (June 21 - July 21): A chaotic schedule will leave you exhausted with fatigue. It is better to seek the help of others and not try to work day and night to catch up with lost time. In trying to showing your sincerity and working hard you could only be harming your health and also not produce quality results. Personal relationships are good, though you will not be able to give personal attention and care to someone very dear to you.

LEO (July 22 - August 21): Chances are there to do something that you have wanted to do besides your normal work. Someone known will help you with all that you may need. Youngsters desirous of a career in the media or television serials may approach the right person and can get a positive response. Look forward to exciting events that are likely in your love life. Keep yourself in check and do not let your emotions get the better of you.

VIRGO (August 22 - September 21): Major developments in your career and profession will bring you more into the limelight. News from overseas is favorable, and some of you will be traveling abroad on invitation from your business associates. An acquaintance of the opposite sex who has been sending you messages may have more than friendship on his/her mind. If are committed elsewhere you need to make your position clear or if inclined you had better be sure you could lose out on both fronts.

LIBRA (September 22 - October 22): A new assignment will keep you on the move and constantly on your toes. This is perhaps the opportunity that you have been waiting for. You can look forward to some income from work you have just completed. New work enquiries are also encouraging. Not much happening in your love life as you will be focusing on other areas of your life which are also important to you right now.

SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21): Your capacity to take independent decisions aids your progress. Travel if it materializes will be comfortable and bring in desired results. You can look forward to new alliances in fresh business ventures, which will come your way. Consultants will sign a prestigious contract. Find time to communicate more with your mate or beloved or you could be accused of not caring anymore.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 December 20): Multi tasking will not work today; you need all the help that you can get from others. Work in cooperation to achieve optimum results. Those of you who may have started something on the side to supplement your income may get into trouble as far as their routine job or work is concerned. What you imagine is love could turn out to be an infatuation. Do not seek or give a commitment right now in a relationship for there could be a deception.

CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 19): Travels will bring about success and profits. Those who are keen on professional sports may get an opportunity to represent their state or country and do well. There will be plenty of social engagements and parties or an important celebration to attend. At a gathering or outing you will bowl over friends with a good repertoire and quiet humor. Socially you will be very much in demand.

AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18): Focus on your current task and set-up realistic goals in business or career. Think about direct needs and work towards achieving it. See that you are not neglecting something at work or in your career. If you feel constricted in any manner, do not hesitate to seek help and advice of others. At a social gathering or party you will be the life of the party. The married will receive all the support from their mate.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20): Look forward to making new alliances in new business ventures. Those working independently or as consultants will sign a major contract. A new friendship could create problems with a close associate who will be feeling very possessive about you. Handle the situation tactfully.

Team India seek new start for the ODIs By Chetan Narula

B

RISTOL: Their morale battered by the Test series debacle, India would look to make a fresh beginning and salvage lost pride when they take on England in a five-match ODI cricket series starting here today. On one hand, the Indians will be distracted by the 1-3 series loss in the Test series prior and will want to do well in the ODIs, on the other, they will also need to balance their approach keeping next year's World Cup in mind. That tournament, to be hosted by Australia and New Zealand, is now just six months away. From here onwards, every ODI played by the Indian team will be a preparatory step towards defending their 2011 crown Down Under. And to do so, they will be evaluating players in the three ODI series between now and the World Cup -here in England, at home against West Indies and then the tri-series on the Australian tour. Already, the Indian selectors have taken stock of the situation at hand and the 17-man squad is a reflection of their thoughts. Sanju Samson and Karn Sharma represent their line of thinking in that the squad will need an additional wicket-keeper as well as a probable third spin-bowling allround option. But there is a question-mark over how many opportunities these two youngsters will get in the current five-match series. This is because the middle-order and all-round/spin-option slots have enough contenders at the moment. Starting with the latter, Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin will fill up the two spin options in the playing eleven. Earlier this year in New Zealand, in the fourth ODI at Hamilton, Stuart Binny was introduced as an alternate and his exploits in Bangladesh showed that he will remain one in conditions that assist swing. However Indian skipper Mahen-

Dhoni a serial offender in India’s debacles abroad

MELBOURNE: Slamming Mahendra Singh Dhoni as a “serial offender” in the India’s Test debacles abroad, former Australia captain Ian Chappell said if the team fails to compete at full throttle then another capitulation is certain against a highly competitive Australian outfit. “There’s no disgrace in losing; it’s part of cricketing life. However, what is disgraceful is failing to compete to the best of your ability and continuing to make the same mistakes. That’s what India have done for the bulk of their last two visits to the UK and their most recent tour of Australia,” Chappell said of India’s lacklustre performances abroad. He said the latest Indian Test debacle, the 1-3 loss to England, was worse than those previous capitulations because India achieved a monumental victory at Lord’s.

MEETING OF MINDS: Indian captain and coach Duncan Fletcher.

dra Singh Dhoni is a little circumspect about using four medium pace options as it slows down the overrate. It will be interesting to see if he will opt for two spinners straightaway, irrespective of conditions in Bristol, given that Binny didn't get to bowl in the warm-up game against Middlesex on Friday. On that day, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammad Shami bowled short spells and it was a clear sign that the team management wanted to preserve them before things get heated. They are expected to be the first-choice bowlers, but who will be the third leg of this tripod? Including Binny, India had seven options to choose from in the pace department during the Test series. They are similarly spoilt for choice this time as well, with Umesh Yadav, Mohit Sharma and Dhawal Kulkarni to choose from. It has to be a careful choice in terms of the attack's balance. This is because on the last two overseas tours, Dhoni always won the toss and opted to bowl first with just one exception. On seven such occasions in South Africa and New Zealand then, India conceded 358, 281, 301, 292, 271, 314 and 303. The one time they batted first, in that afore-mentioned Hamilton ODI, they couldn't defend 278.

‘Boss’ Fletcher will lead India into World Cup: Dhoni

BRISTOL: Ending speculation about coach Duncan Fletcher’s role in the five one-dayers against England, Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni today said that the Zimbabwean will stay as “boss” of the team until the 2015 World Cup. After the 1-3 Test debacle, Team India witnessed a major reshuffle on the coaching front with bowling coach Joe Dawes and fielding consultant Trevor Penney forced to go on a break and BCCI appointing Ravi Shastri as the Team Director. But on the eve of the the first ODI,

Dhoni said that Fletcher is still “the boss”.“He will lead us into the World Cup,” said Dhoni referring to the coach. “Also he is still the boss. We have Ravi Shastri who will look into everything, but Fletcher is the boss. It’s not as if his powers or his position have been curtailed. I don’t know what you feel from the outside, but operations still remain the same. We have a few other support staff coming into the dressing room, but overall the operation remains the same.”

After taking over the director’s role, Shastri mentioned that the new coaching staff, including Fletcher, will report to him during the limitedovers series. After Dawes’ and Penney’s ouster, former India allrounder Sanjay Bangar and ex-pacer Bharat Arun were appointed assistant coaches with R. Sridhar as the fielding coach. Dhoni though clarified that Shastri’s role is more of a manager. “Ravi is here to oversee the operations from the outside, what he feels and everything else. It’s good to have him.”

Time for us to show character: Raina L

ONDON: Claiming to have done his bit to infuse some positivity into the beleaguered Indian cricket team, ODI specialist Suresh Raina says the side will have to show character to get over the Test debacle and clinch the limited overs series starting here today. "The team is going through a difficult phase right now and it is time for us to show character. It can be difficult sometimes to move on from such defeat but you have to fight your way out of it when you're playing at the international level," Raina told 'bcci.Tv.' "The new players will bring freshness in the squad which will help the guys who have been here for the Tests regain the positivity. They are striving to learn from their mistakes and we will add fresh spirit," he said. India were humiliated 1-3 in the Test series -- the last two defeats coming inside three days. Raina said he always tries to bring positivity and exuberance in the camp. "I al-

bowler at fine leg or third man to fetch his sweater can make a huge difference in the team's atmosphere," he said. "It is contagious – when one player starts doing it, another follows, and before you know the whole team is pumping with energy and high spirits. This energy takes time to build – sometimes four overs, at times 10 overs. To create that atmosphere someone has to take a lead and make that extra effort. Everyone is either thinking about their own batting or bowling," he added. "If I just stand there minding my own business, everyone will just go through the motions. But if I go and pat someone, he will come and do the same when I do something good. That creates a positive aura around in the field, makes you feel lighter and lifts everyone around. That is something that's in my hands and something I have been doing for the last 10 years," said Raina.

SITTING PRETTY: England captain Alastair Cook comfortably won the Tests but insists that India are favourites for the ODI series.

Change of format makes India favourites: Cook BRISTOL: England skipper Alastair Cook started playing mind games as he said that a change of format will certainly help the Indian team terming them favourites in the fivematch ODI series. “A change of format will obviously do them good. It’s not quite the same ground-hog day for them probably,” the sarcasm in Cook’s statement was not lost as he referred to India’s woeful show in the last three Tests of the recently concluded series. “We’ve got to remember they’re world champions at 50overs, so they obviously know what they’re doing and will probably go into this as favourites. But if we play well, we’re hard to beat in our conditions,” Cook said on the eve of the first one-dayer. India lost the five-match Test series 3-1 in embarrassing fashion after losing by huge margins in the last three Tests at Southampton, Manchester and the Oval. This was despite taking a 1-0 lead in the series at the Lord’s. But the change in format should give them more confidence, having completed a 95-run win over Middlesex in the single warm-up game at Lord’s on Friday. Meanwhile, for England, the ODI World Cup in Australia-New Zealand comes into focus as this is their last engagement at home before the quadrennial tournament. “It depends on how the next few months go,” said Cook, referring to that event in February-March 2015. “Over the last few World Cups, we haven’t performed at our best. We’ve had key personnel changes right at the end - major decisions - leading into World Cups. We want to be a bit more consistent in that. We’ve got a good chance because of the conditions we‘ll be playing in. It’s not sub-continental conditions, where we find it hard because we don’t play so much there. It’s quite similar to English conditions. So I think we’ve got a very good chance,” the confident skipper said.

IN BRIEF Gujrathi holds Kryvoruchko; Karthikeyan beats Areshchenko

ABU DHABI: Indian Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi kept himself in joint lead following a come-from-behind draw with second seed Yuriy Kryvoruchko of Ukraine in the fourth round of Abu Dhabi Masters chess tournament now underway here. After settling for his first draw in four games, Gujrathi remained in shared lead on 3.5 points along with Kryvoruchko, Adam Horvath of Hungary, Russian duo of Aleksandr Rakhmanov and Sergey Volkov and Tigran Petrosian of Armenia. Young International Master Murali Karthikeyan caused a major flutter in the tournament scalping for third seed Alexander Areshchenko of Ukraine in a fairly one-sided affair.

Gearbox problem forces Karthikeyan's retirement at Motegi

TOCHIGI (JAPAN): A gearbox issue cost Narain Karthikeyan a points finish after a crazy, incidentpacked Super Formula round four that concluded on Sunday. Pitstop issues, several incidents and a torrential downpour made it one of the most actionpacked races of the season, although the Indian didn’t get the opportunity to experience most of it. "After catching up to the competition massively in a limited time, the crazy rain-hit race was the best opportunity to get a solid result out of it but unfortunately we didn’t get that far," said Karthikeyan, who started 12th on the grid. The former Formula 1 driver executed another one of his customary lightning getaway at the start, gaining two places on the tight and twisty Twin Ring Motegi circuit. Running in the top 10, Karthikeyan pitted on lap 13, pushing hard on his in-lap and jumped Kunimoto during the pitstop.

Boxer Solanki loses in semis, to fight for bronze in Youth Games

Solanki lost 0-3 on points to his Chinese opponent and he will take on Muhammad Ali of Great Britain in the bronze medal match today. In athletics, Ajay Kumar Saroj finished fifth in men's 1500m race 'A' final with a personal best timing of 3:46.92. Ajay made a fine effort but he finally could not cope with the pace of African runners towards the end of the race. Kenyan Gilbert Kwemoi led the race from start to finish to clock 3:41.99 for the gold.

Chowrasia in line for another top-10 finish at Czech Masters

PRAGUE: Indian golfer SSP Chowrasia gave himself a shot at a second successive top-10 finish as he carded a bogey-free four-under 68 to move up to tied 17th at the D+D REAL Czech Masters. Chowrasia, who shot 68 in first round, slipped in the second with a 75 but recovered well in the third to total five-under 211. Gaganjeet Bhullar (71) was tied 43rd at two-under, but Shiv Kapur slid down with a 75 and was tied 63rd at even par. Jeev Milkha Singh had missed the cut. Chowrasia had four birdies on fourth, tenth, 12th and 18th and said, "I have been hitting well and also putting well. I need to be more consistent.”

OLD COAST (AUSTRALIA): American Katie Ledecky set a second world record in two days by shattering her own 1500-metre freestyle record at the Pan Pacific championships on Sunday. The 17-year-old schoolgirl smashed her record by almost six seconds with a time of 15 minutes 28.36 seconds, to claim her fifth gold medal at the Gold Coast meet. OLKATA: They certainly do not belong to the "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" nor can they be clubbed among "Few Good Men" but these proverbial bad boys want a final shot at redemption through the 'beautiful game'. A serial killer, who has appealed to Calcutta High Court against death penalty, an abductor, a few accused of ghastly crimes, are those among the 36 prisoners, who have formed a team registered under the name of "West Bengal Inmates Sports Club". The inmates will be competing in the North 24 Parganas District Football league tournament starting today in an unique initiative taken by West Bengal Correctional Department to "correct" the criminals. A brief profile of the team will send shivers down the spine as it contains names of some of those associated with much publicized criminal cases of recent and distant past in Bengal. Ledecky holds the world records in the 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle, making her the first woman since US distance great Janet Evans to hold all three records at the same time. "I knew it was my last race of the meet and the last race of the season, and I had a really good season and I wanted to finish on a good note," Ledecky said. "I didn't want to walk away

Coach Mihir Das has picked the side from West Bengal Correctional Department's six homes — Presidency, Alipore, Dum Dum, Medinipore, Baharampore and Jalpaiguri. The team trains for about two hours five days a week at the Dum Dum Correctional Home under the tutelage of Das for more than two years. ROSBERG RIDES HIS LUCK BEHIND VICTORIOUS

S

PA (BELGIUM): Nico Rosberg rode his luck to open up a clear 29-points championship advantage over Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton on Sunday when he finished second behind triumphant Australian Daniel Ricciardo in the Belgian Grand Prix. Ricciardo, of Red Bull, won with a bold and well-judged drive in a dramatic race that saw Hamilton lead from the start, but suffer a second-lap puncture following a collision with Rosberg. It was Red Bull's 50th win in Formula One and a beaming Ricciardo was hailed with cheers, while Rosberg was booed by the crowd at the end of the race. It appeared that Hamilton was the victim of a misjudged passing move by the German. The damage wrecked his race and may have ruined his title bid with seven of this year's 19 races remaining. "I have apologized to Lewis... A bad result for Lewis and a bad result for the Mercedes team," said Mercedes team chief Niki Lauda. After struggling to regain his momentum, the 29-year-old Briton retired with four of the 44 laps remaining leaving Rosberg content to take his first podium finish in Belgium at the eighth attempt. He came 3.3 seconds behind the beaming Ricciardo. It was Ricciardo's third win in six races in his first season with Red Bull since succeeding fellow Australian Mark Webber as teammate to four-time champion German Sebastian Vettel, who came home fifth. On a welcome dry, if cool, afternoon in the Ardennes, Rosberg made a poor start from his 11th career pole position and Hamilton, from second on the grid, pulled alongside and outside to lead as they surged round the hairpin at La Source. The 2008 world champion pulled clear on the entry to Eau Rouge and up the hill towards Radillon where a charging Vettel, who had taken second place, attacked without success and ran off track, falling back into third behind Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard, who had struggled to leave the grid for the formation lap and required assistance to start, was handed a five seconds penalty - to be added to a pit stop - for the misdemeanor, but raced with great elan and determination.

Imran wants to marry in ‘Naya Pakistan’ I

SLAMABAD: Cricketerturned-politician and a heartthrob Imran Khan, who is leading his Tehreek-eInsaaf party in anti-government protests here, has said that he will marry once his dream 'Naya Pakistan' was fulfilled. In his daily nightly ad-

dress, Khan last night told this to thousands of his supporters camping in front of parliament, demanding Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's resignation. "I want to create new Pakistan not only for you but also for me because once Naya Pakistan becomes a reality, I will

marry," 62-year-old Khan said to thunderous applause. Khan married British heiress Jemima Goldsmith in 1995 but the marriage flopped and both agreed to separate in 2004. They have two sons, Sulieman and Qasim, who live with the mother in Britain.
