senior citizen from Tamil Nadu along with his other family members has landed in Mumbai to search for his 30 yearold son Chelappa who fell into an open manhole in Bandra Railway Colony three days back but has yet to be traced., In the three day heavy rain which laid the city to siege, there was condsiderable water logging in a railway colony in Bandra (West), due to which few colony members hired daily wage labourers to set right the water logging problem. All being busy with their work, however a couple of workers slipped into the open manhole which could not be seen due to heavy water logging. One of the managers managed

to come out but Chelappa was unable to come after falling into the drain. Chelappa's wife who was present with him at the time of incident revealed that, her husband slipped and quickly was taken away by the swirling water. After the incident she informed colony members who in turn informed local police as well as the civic authority. On call, a fire brigade team reached the spot within minutes and started a rescue operation. They searched in vain for Chelappa, but he was nowhere to be found. Fire brigade searched for his body for more than six hours in the drain, which eventually meets the Mahim creek. Chelappa didn’t see the open manhole, which had been kept open for easy drainage of floodwater, and fell into the nullah under-

neath, his wife added. After the long search, when Chelappa’s body could not be found, his wife informed his father in Tamil Nadu. Hearing the sad news, his father went in a state of shock and came along with his other family members on Wednesday in Bandra to find his son's dead body. Chelappa's father revealed that, he would not move to Tamil Nadu till he got his son's dead body. After searching the spot where he fell, Chelappa's family members went to BMC and Mahim creek as well. While an officer from the BMC said “We are looking for it but nothing seems to have worked out. We are still in search of the body, as there is no chance that he is still alive, we are doing whatever we can.”

'Swimming Not Allowed' on a fence installed at the edge of the lake. The work that was at a standstill has also resumed with installing of the fences around the lake. The fences were removed for the proposed beautification of the Bandra Talao. ADC on Monday had first reported about the increased water level of the Bandra Talao after which the process to decrease the water level was initiated. The BMC officials had confirmed that there have been precautions taken to tackle water logging issues in the adjoining areas. However there was no precautions to keep away the young children from the lake. The residents of the nearby locality had pointed out the issue regarding the increased water level of the lake which they feared recollecting the July 26 monsoon rains. Bandra Corporator Asif Zakariya said, "The necessary barricading is being installed and proper signages have been put to deter citizens from venturing near the water."

India to be among Top 3 by 2030 EMERGING markets are expected to grow faster than developed economies, and India is likely to become the third largest economy by 2030 in the world after China and the United States. According to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), emerging markets are expected to grow faster than developed economies, and as a result developing countries such as China and India are likely to overtake current global leaders such as the US, Japan and Western Europe. "China is expected to overtake the United States in 2026 in nominal GDP in US dollar terms and maintain its position as the largest economy to 2050. India is expected to move up the rankings to third place, with real growth averaging close to 5 per cent up to 2050," the EIU report said. By 2030 the top three economies of the world would be the US, China and India. Meanwhile, other emerging markets, such as Indonesia and Mexico, would rank among the top ten economies at market exchanges rates by 2050, overtaking economies such as Italy and Russia. Besides, China, the US and India, the 10 economies in 2050 at market exchange rates would be Indonesia (4th), Japan (5th), Germany (6th), Brazil (7th), Mexico (8th), the UK (9th) and France (10th). Such will be the growth of China

and India that by 2050 they will each be richer than the next five (Indonesia, Germany, Japan, Brazil, and the UK) put together, the report said adding "this will represent a scale of wealth relative to the rest of the top ten that is unique in recorded history". "Given China's and India's economic might, they will take on a much bigger role in addressing global issues such as climate change, international security and global economic governance," the report said.

UK puppy has facelift to save his sight

Benny, the 7-month-old Shar-Pei puppy.

AN abandoned Shar-Pei puppy in the UK has had a facelift to save his sight after his natural skin folds over-developed - almost completely covering his eyes and ears.

Benny, the seven-month-old Shar-Pei, was discovered wandering the streets three weeks ago. He had been left almost blind and deaf after his natural skin folds almost completely covered his eyes and ears. He needed surgery to cut away a lot of the excess skin on his face and head in order to save his sight and hearing. Staff at Margaret Green Animal Rescue in Dorset launched an appeal to fund the urgent surgery he required and donations came flooding in. Benny had his first surgery last week and is set to undergo his second. "When Benny was brought to us by the dog warden we had no way of knowing just how much he was suffering with various health conditions," Hannah Dunn, senior animal welfare worker said. "Benny's problems meant that he was almost blind and his quality of life would be seriously compromised. "He had his first operation last Thursday which was a facelift and double entropian - removing skin folded in on his eyes," Dunn said. "After he has recovered from this major surgery, Benny will have a double ear operation and after this he may well need a third operation," Dunn added. Benny is also suffering from double entropian, a condition where his eyelids fold inwards causing irritation as his eyelashes rub against his eyes. This is so severe in Benny's case that one eye has developed a possible ulcer.

Queen may move out of Buckingham Palace QUEEN ELIZABETH II may have to move out of Buckingham Palace during the much-needed repair and maintenance work to her 18th century iconic residence costing a whopping 150 million pounds, royal officials said. They said the 89-year-old British monarch's official London residence needs a total overhaul such as rewiring, new plumbing, asbestos removing, and redecoration. The last time the building which dates back to the 18th century had any renovation work was in 1952. "One option is for the palace to be vacated; we're getting experts to look at these scenarios and cost them for us," a palace official said at a briefing on the Queen's royal accounts. "The initial estimate for the refurbishment of Buckingham Palace looks like 150 million pounds," he said. However, some campaigners in favour of an elected head of state have called for Buckingham Palace in the heart of London to be turned into a museum for the people of Britain. "If the taxpayer is footing the bill, the taxpayer should reap the reward. Buckingham Palace already houses one of the world's greatest art collections – so let's see it handed back to the people," said Graham Smith, chief executive of one such group

The Queen is paid 15 per cent of the Crown Estate's profits by the UK government, including from the Crown Estate in Scotland, under the Sovereign Grant formula launched in 2011. The latest accounts show that the Queen last year received 37.9 million pounds from the grant, of which she spent 35.7 million pounds. That figure will increase to 40.05 million pounds this year and is expected to rise to 42.8 million pounds next year.

After Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis tweeted on social media “I have asked the Municipal Commissioner to make Coastal Road DPR Public. Additional Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee adressed the media and gave specifics as per the draft DPR. One of the main intentions

n a public meeting held on Wednesday at CSMVS museum, objections were raised on making the coastal road. While the BMC claims that minimal rehabilitation will be required, Bandra (West) Resident's Association has objected to the construction of the coastal road. They believe that it is a project only for motorists who

of constructing the coastal road, according to Mukherjee, is to avoid long distance commuting. “As we all know commuting in Mumbai is rather stressful, and therefore it will be of great use to locals. It will be ideal for public transport as city buses services will have access to it; bus are only seven percent of the commuters in the city. It is accentuating the north-south transport axis when planners - late Charles Correa and Shirish Patel argued that Greater Mumbai should grow eastwards towards the mainland. They also brought the point that international cities like Paris and Seoul are removing coastal roads in

n what is being described as the first scam of its sorts to hit the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led state government, BJP Minister for Women and Child Development Pankaja Munde-Palwe has been accused of out of turn clearance in the purchase of several items such as chikkis, mats, dishes and books meant for Anganwadis worth Rs 206 crore, all in an illegal manner. What is worse still is that the orders for purchasing these items were placed without calling for mandatory e-tendering for purchase of items in excess of Rs 3 lakh. Interestingly all the purchases were cleared in one single day on February 13 and the government in a lightining speed issued 24 Government Resolutions (GR's) all in one day. he state Congress has taken serious cognizance of alleged irregularities of Women and Child Welfare Minister Pankaja Munde and has lodged a formal complaint with the state AntiCorruption Bureau (ACB) demanding a probe into the allegations against her. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has termed this matter as serious and urged the government to hand it over to the Central Bureau of Investiga-

Pankaja Munde-Palwe closed that the orders were issued in total disregard to the administrative norms. Speaking to newspersons recently, Minister for Finance and Planning Sudhir Mungantiwar had clarified that instructions were issued that any purchases above Rs 1 lakh should be done through e-tendering and not by rate contract system. A senior official while

speaking to newspersons on conditions of anonymity termed the case as one of nepotism. He added that the manner in which the 24 contracts were issued hurriedly in a day flouting all rules shows that certain contractors were being favored. He added that although it may not be termed as a scam, but the purpose of violating rules definitely points to something having gone wrong. Quick to pounce on the controversy, All India Congress Committee (AICC) spokesperson Ajay Maken yesterday demanded a judicial probe in the scam. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) spokesperson Sachin Sawant announced that the Congress would lodge a complaint with the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) over the alleged illegal purchases. Minister for Women and Child Development Pankaja Munde-Palwe in a statement

She claimed that as a minister she had taken some dynamic decisions to reduce corruption has troubled some money minded bunch of people. The lid on the scam was blown over on June 15 by Ahmednagar Zilla Parishad president Manjushree Gund who dashed off a letter to Munde-Palwe's office complaining about the poor unhygenic quality of chikki being supplied to Anganwadi students under the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS). She had complained that the chikki was contaminated with clay. Sources disclosed that Munde-Palwe allowed the purchase through rate contract system despite the Chief Ministers orders discountinuing the rate contract system wherein purchases are made through negotiations on the rates.

Congress lodges formal complaint tion (CBI) for a probe. As the news started doing the rounds on Wednesday about Pankaja Munde's alleged involvement in a controversy of various irregularities in awarding contracts worth Rs.206 crore (Rs.2.06 billion), the Congress swung into action. The state Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant went to the ACB office at Worli and filed a formal com-

plaint against Munde. He met the Director General of ACB Pravin Dixit and filed a complaint demanding detail inquiry against the Minister as well as the secretary and the other officials of the women and child welfare department. The prime allegations leveled by Congress party are irregularities in awarding contracts for workbooks for students, water filters, growth

adia hospital has stepped forward to take care of a premature born 16-day-old baby which has been rejected by her own mother for being born with abnormal looks. The prematurely born 16day-old baby suffers from a rare medical condition that has restricted the size of her head to that of a 26-week-old foetus. Born to Mamata and Ajay Dode, a farmer from Palghar district in Maharashtra, on May 30 and two months premature, the baby was diagnosed with microcephaly, a neuro-developmental disorder in which the head circumference of the newly-born child is significantly smaller than normal, doctors of the Wadia Maternity Hospital said. “The mother, suffering from a post-partum depression, has rejected the baby”. The baby was admitted in NICU in view of dysmorphic features and very low birth weight with Intrauterine Growth retardation. The child was assessed by neonatologists, sonologists, cardiologists, neurologists, with a multidisciplinary approach being followed for the child . Traffic was diverted as a footpath near Radio Club in Colaba, in South Mumbai, caved in, leaving a big crater on what was once a pavement covered with paver blocks. Civic authorities have cordoned off the road. The cause of the cave-in is not yet known, a BMC official said. Two days ago, in a similar cave-in, a 22 feet deep crater came up overnight, in a village in adjoining Palghar district. The crater was noticed in the farm owned by Vikramgad tehsil resident Tulsi Kothe.

Kalokhe's arrest revealed that he had close links with drug mafia’s 'Baby' Patankar, who too was arrested later after being on the run for about 40 days.

he Bombay High Court on Wednesday refused to interfere in Maharashtra Government's move to hike fares of taxis and auto rickshaws based on the recommendation of the now-scrapped Hakim Committee. The high court order meant that government can start from tomorrow the process of recalibration of e-meters of autos and taxis in Mumbai and its metropolitan region. A division bench of justices N.H. Patil and S.B. Shukre rejected the interim relief sought by consumer body 'Mumbai Grahak Panchayat' to stay the proposed hike until the newly-formed panel, to be headed by a retired high court judge, submitted its report. The consumer body had also raised objections to the recommendations of the Hakim Committee in the past, reports PTI. "The state government has already taken a decision and has also appointed a new committee to look into the Hakim committee report. We are not inclined to interfere at this stage. Interim relief sought is rejected," the court said. The Mumbai Metropolitan Road Transport Authority (MMRTA) had on May 11 proposed a hike in the basic fare for auto rickshaws and taxis based on the recommendation of the erstwhile Hakim panel.

cams, Apathy, Corruption - the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has been grabbing headlines often for the wrong reasons, but here’s some good news from its town planning (TP) wing which will bring smiles to the faces of thousands of drama lovers living in and around the twin-city. Thanks to MBMC’s proactive approach, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, intervened to clear decks for modifications to the city’s Development Control (DC) rules allowing construction of a theatre via private hands. As per the city’s Final 1997 DP, a private land near Shivar Garden, had been earmarked for the “Drama Theatre”. After reservation was imposed, the land owners intimated the MBMC about the ascent to Build and Transfer the facility on the reserved area in lieu of consent to develop the remaining property. The proposal was sent to the state

government which cited technical glitches articulating its inability to allow private construction and instead directed the MBMC to build the theatre on its own. However the MBMC not only failed to take steps to acquire the property, it mysteriously neglected in responding to the 10- yearlapse notice, prompting the owners to move judiciary in 2011, seeking de-reservation of the land under the provisions of the MRTP Act. In 2013, a HC divisional bench granted plea that the reservation had lapsed and the land stood de-reserved. On the virtue of procedural flaws the MBMC not only moved a review petition in

the Apex court, but also reworked a strategy to acquire the land and come up with the much needed utility. The town planning wing sought changes in the DC rule which evoked a positive response from the CM who gave his in-principle nod to the proposal. Although through it’s review petition, the present town planning team was keen to seek the attention of the judiciary towards loopholes in following the dereservation process, an amicable way out with the land owner was being worked out with a solution being worked out to ensure that the theatre comes into existence as early as possible.

The Rule Book Says….

According to the Maharashtra Regional Town Planning Act, the MBMC needs to acquire plots before their reservation lapses in order to ensure continuity of their public space status. This should be within 10 years of approval of city’s town planning, failing which the owner can serve a notice to the civic body under section 126 of the Act. In event of noncompliance the owner of the plot is free to decide how to use the land.

Ponder awhile... “Money is only a tool. It will take you wherever you wish, but it will not replace you as the driver.” — Ayn Rand

High cost of medical course T

IME was when seats in medical colleges could be got easily. And the course — 5 years — attracted affordable fees. There was no problem about getting seats. The scenario has changed. It looks like it’s a brisk business in medicine. And medical education has become expensive. There are institutions where a student has to pay a million to complete the course. Only the rich can send their children to study medicine. Not all of them become doctors. In fact, some of them may not be interested in the subject at all. Our effort must be to turn out topclass doctors. Some of those who have done well in qualifying for the pre-examinations must get prior admission. This, however, does not happen. A few may be able to get bank loans which may help them study medicine. The doctor who comes out of medical colleges has a big problem to tackle: paying back the loans is no easy task. Whether he likes it or not, he has to charge more fees for the treatment he provides. Minor surgery costs thousands and hospital stay too is costly. Thanks to the high cost of medical education, the cost of treatment keeps going up. Business considerations should not have influenced the medical profession.

NDIANS who are above 60 still remember the dreadful day of 25th June even after 40 years. The nation was put under Emergency and all fundamental rights of the citizens stood suspended on that day, thanks to the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who perpetuated this brutal attack on the Indian democracy only to save her position of the Prime Minister and her government that had come under the attack of the nationwide mass fury. Now that 40 years have passed since National Emergency was promulgated and lots of water has already passed under the bridge during this long stretch of time, one would argue that why we should keep reciting the same old story again. However, one must recall the memories periodically and deliberate about the causes and effects of the 'democratic tool' that was used for the most 'undemocratic' purpose 40 years ago. The Indian Constitution had armed the government in power with a provision to promulgate 'Internal Emergency' to allow itself to discharge its functions smoothly and effectively in the wake of any natural calamity such as floods or storm or breaking of law and order due to violence in the country. Indira took undue advantage of this provision and announced Emergency and took all powers in her hands. She could manage the Emergency for 19-long months during which most of the major Opposition leaders were put behind bars. Many organizations were banned and the term of the Lok Sabha was enhanced by a year. However, though there was an utter silence, barring sporadic incidents of protests, people at large were deeply hurt by the act of the Prime Minister's Office. Gandhi, surrounded by opportunists, gave her wrong advice to announce elections before schedule. The Opposition parties showed exceptional unity and formed a united front under the banner of Janata Party. Late Jai Prakash Narain played a ship-anchor role in bringing in four major parties together to take on the Congress led by Indira Gandhi. To her surprise, the people who remained silent all through, gave their verdict by defeating the rulers all over. In Uttar Pradesh, the Congress lost all seats; Gandhi herself and her son Sanjay also lost the elections. Most of the ministers in her cabinet could not return to Parliament. Janata Party came to power with flying colours and Morarji Desai was made the Prime Minister. The rest is a history.

There is every possibility of the nation going under undeclared emergency where all provisions of the Emergency can be implemented under the prevailing laws and rules and the fundamental rights of an Indian can be curbed or suspended. Compassion, meditation and seva V

IRTUES must be practiced until they become your nature. Friendliness, compassion and meditation should continue as practices until you realize that they are your very nature. The flaw in doing something as an act is that you look for a result. When something is done as your nature, you are not attached to the result and you simply do it. An action that arises from your nature is neither tiring nor frustrating. Daily routines like brushing your teeth or bathing are not even considered actions because they are so integrated into your life. You do all this without doership. Mumbaikars are keen to know the quantity of rainfall in the catchment areas of the seven lakes that supply drinking water to the city MUMBAI is an over populated city but some simple suggestions if implemented can solve the city's traffic woes and congestion problems. Two or Four wheelers on roads would decrease if public transport like BEST buses and local trains become more efficient as far as comfort and frequency is concerned. Cars without maximum capacity should not be allowed to ply on roads during peak hours which would encourage pooling of cars thus saving on fuel and checking pollution and at the same time it would mean making optimal use of vehicles.

Slight changes in timings of various professions can divide the rush hour traffic. If the stock market opens at 8, banks can work from 9 onwards and other markets can adjust accordingly with schools and colleges utilizing the remaining slot. This time management with proper planning would ease traffic congestion and solve a major part of our traffic woes.A special permit for cars that cost a hefty amount like they have in Singapore would discourage people from using pvt vehicles and encourage them to use public transport like trains, metros and buses.

JUST before the previous Municipal elections, the Shiv Sena’s slogan was: ‘Aamhi Karoon Dhakwan’ (We shall prove by serving). Today, the SS is blaming everyone else for Mjumbai’s woes. Mumbaikars, in a way, agree with the SS because Mumbaikars have realized the blunder they have committed by electing the SS. Mumbaikars will not commit the same mistake. Finally, instead of ‘nallah’ cleaning, the Municipal Corporation must undertake ‘nallayak’ cleaning’! — Harishchandra P, Juhu

FOR the benefit of the commoners, the BMC and the IMD are publishing the developments on the monsoon front in the metropolis on a regular basis. However, the average Mumbaikar is solely interested in knowing the quantity of rainfall in the catchment areas of the seven lakes that supply drinking water to the city. A regular update on statistics relating to these data about the latest water level marks should be published in the leading newspapers, say, on every alternate day.

Opposition parties on Wednesday demanded the removal of HRD Minister Smriti Irani, saying she has no "moral, constitutional or legal" right to continue in her post after a Delhi court took cognisance of a complaint that she gave false information about her educational qualification. "It is apparent that the country's education minister is lying about her own education. What will happen to the future of millions of children in the country. Irani has no moral, constitutional or legal right to continue in her post for even a day," Congress's chief spokesperson, Randeep Surjewala told PTI. LET IT RAIN Don’t let a little rain ruin your fun! Sara Shah & Yamini Walia have a few tips to help you throw the perfect party, even when it’s raining cats and dogs

T

he first few days of the monsoon may have brought some relief from the sweltering Mumbai heat, but they’ve also brought about the predictable transport issues and water logging. With all the rain and water logging, it seems tempting to just stay indoors. But, don’t let a little rain ruin all your fun! It’s possible to throw a party during monsoon without letting travel issues, closed stores and water logging ruin your plans.

guests forget about the rain. Here’s what you should remember when you’re putting a monsoon party menu together.

Make it fun Combat the gloomy climate by serving food in colourful, fun ways. Sliders make for the perfect party food and so, you can whip up some fun vada pav sliders. Serve mini toasted sandwiches with a variety of fillings and a few fried snacks. Indian street food such as bhel puri and sev puri also work as party snacks. Serve them in mini containers or small, decorated jars. Avoid serving too many gravy dishes.

Keep it simple Your guests have undergone quite a journey to get to your house for a party in bad weather. They don’t want to wade through ankledeep water, only to use all the energy that they’ve left to eat the food that you have on offer. So, make sure that you keep the meals easy to eat and fuss-free.

Keep it fresh The monsoon brings with it a host of illnesses and allergies, but the last thing you need is a sick guest. Make sure that the food you serve is fresh. Pick dishes that are easy to whip up and don’t take too long to prepare. Use fresh ingredients.

>> To keep your party from getting ruined because of an unexpected downpour, read our tips

Real-life tips We asked a few people about their monsoon party experiences. Take a cue from them 22-year-old Niharika Lodhe, suggests embracing the weather to ensure that your party is a success. She tells us, “My advice for anyone would be to always have a plan B. On the day of my sweet sixteenth, it was raining cats and dogs. I had organised a party in the evening, but due to inconsistencies in transport, only those who lived close-by showed up. The caterers backed out at the last moment and my plan began to fall apart. So instead of going to the venue like we had planned previously, I decided to move the venue to our terrace. There were only a few people so my family could prepare some snacks for everyone. We all played music, danced in the pouring rain and gorged on delicious onion pakoras!” 29-year-old Sadhana Kanojia suggests being prepared, especially when it comes to monsoon parties. She says,“Keep the unreliable nature of the weather in mind when you make decorations. On the day of my wedding, we had an indoor ceremony, but dinner was supposed to be served outdoors near a swimming pool. We had prepared wonderful decorations that matched our theme, but at the last moment it started raining heavily. Thankfully, the decorator had expected rain and taken several precautions, and so he immediately raised a roof over the dining area. If he hadn’t done that, everyone’s food would have been floating in the water!”

>> Soups are a good option, if it’s pouring outside

serve it piping hot Okay, we don’t mean that the food should be scalding, but make sure that most of it is served hot. Temperatures drop during monsoon, and after getting wet outside, most of your guests will be shivering. Simple soups in cute little jars or cups of hot chocolate and coffee are the perfect treats.

Use these tips Whether the rain took you by surprise or you were praying for it through summer, you should keep the following tips in mind when it comes to hosting a party outdoors on a rainy day.

party tents If it seems like it’s going to rain heavily on the day of your outdoor party, set up a party tent at your venue. This will work in most cases except if there’s lightening! In such a situation, move your guests indoors!

secure stilts If your building has a basement or stilts to rent out, turn the space into a party zone. Place a drop sheet at the entrance so that your guests can wipe wet feet and remove their shoes.

party in the parking lot A party in your building’s indoor parking lot can prove to be a lot of fun. So, make sure that you get it cleaned a few days before your party so that you can move into the parking lot if it starts to pour. Cover areas with some old blankets or sheets and make some space for your tables and chairs.

washes away all your plans? It’s time to make arrangements indoors. So, here are a few fun activities that are perfect for a rainy day house party.

Umbrella bounce To play this game, you need bubble style umbrellas and tennis balls. Hang these umbrellas upside down around your house and ask your guests to toss the tennis balls into them. The balls should bounce at least once before landing in the umbrella. To make it more competitive, have your guests bounce the ball more than once.

Relay races For this classic game, you need to divide your guests into two teams. Send one player from each team to get a raincoat, boots and a hat. When they return, each player must put on all of the gear, take it off and pass it to the next player in line. The first team to complete this task is the winner.

cloud craft This craft exercise is perfect if you’ve invited children over. Ask your guests to cut clouds out of cardboard paper and have their children colour and decorate them with a silver lining by outlining the shapes using glitter pens. Use ribbons to hang candy from these crafty clouds.

Watch movies If the rain has spoiled all your fun plans, fret not! Stock up on a few films that everyone at your party can watch and enjoy. This will keep your friends occupied if they’re stuck indoors with you.

time to tarp At an outdoor party, when you see black clouds approaching, tie tarps to the trees in your colony or building compound and use them to provide cover for your guests. But, if there’s lightening, you know what to do!

handy sweaters

When it comes to the weather, 25-year-old Nidhi Shetty, is always prepared. She tells us, “I was in Singapore pursuing my masters degree. We were going to a fancy beach party when the weather predictions warned of heavy rainfall. So, we stocked up with an extra pair of clothes and footwear, dry towels, blankets to keep ourselves warm after the party and of course, a gigantic umbrella.” 20-year-old marketing executive Shikha Dhar, knows how to make the most of what she’s got. “I was going to a friend’s house party on one of those rainy Mumbai days. When I was leaving, I vividly remember my mother fretting about us heading out to party in the downpour,” she tells us. Her mother’s apprehensions turned out to be true. She says, “We were stuck at my friend’s house towards the end, but we made the most of it. With no electricity, we lit candles, savoured some stocked up snacks and had an intimate chat.” 23-year-old Leander Rebello, experienced heavy rainfall on his birthday last year. He explains, “Thankfully, our neighbours were out of town and had given us their house keys in case of any emergency. After co-coordinating with them, a few of the guests crashed at their place, while a few stayed at mine.”

You don’t want your guests to get a cold in the rains, so if you have some extra sweaters or blankets, pass them around when it gets chilly. This will definitely impress your guests! Some extra raincoats and umbrellas will come in handy too.

Divide & rule If you’re hosting a party together with someone else, make sure to divide the duties responsibly. This will help you avoid panic and every chore will be completed on time, making it easier for the party to get back on track.

activities Most house parties require fun activities such as games or creative activities. But, what do you do when the rain literally

>> If there’s a sudden downpour, you can move the party to your stilts or basement

>> If the weather forecast predicts showers on your party day, set up tents

23-year-old Ashwyn Shetty, had a bad catering experience during the rains. He says, “One time, I had a simple get-together at my place and the caterer was taking awfully long to get the dinner home. I wasn't equipped with enough snacks for all the people at my party. So, I had to make many trips to the supermarket to get stuff for them. And after all this was taken care of, the food arrived! Do not rely on caterers during the rains. They will give you the worst reasons for late deliveries!”

felt that the next obvious step was styling, and in particular, trying to make it less intimidating and more accessible for everyone around me.

>> A look that has been put together can make you stand out from the crowd

n What are some misconceptions that people generally have

about styling? Styling is not necessarily about going the whole nine yards for a special occasion. It is a lifestyle change that needs to be incorporated into your daily life aspects such as your job, and should embody the stage you are at or something that you always wanted to try, but were afraid to. It should imbibe who you are as a person and shouldn’t make you uncomfortable. But, you should be open to taking risks! n What kind of challenges did you face during your journey

as a stylist? People seem to have several misconceptions and a lack of understanding about their bodies. Most people tend to get the wrong size — they think of themselves as smaller or larger than they really are — and they are closed to making the transition to a wardrobe that best suits them. n What are your future plans?

At present, all my energy is directed into expanding Style Right to cover all age groups. I’m working towards creating more awareness about incorporating international trends in people’s lives with panache and ease. n Which actress do you think has the best style sense

in Bollywood? Kangana Ranaut is definitely someone who is not afraid to take risks and has a fierce sense of style!

the right

style Most of us associate style with celebrities. But what if there was a platform on which you could hire your own personal stylist? Yamini Walia speaks to Sharnamli Mehra Adhar, co-owner of Style Right, a personal styling consultancy firm, to find out more

I

magine a platform where someone could teach you how to style yourself right, while keeping your budget in mind. Style Right is exactly that — it provides you with your own personal stylist. This styling consultancy was launched at The Summer Cut, an exhibition presented by The Pink Post-It, and is based on the philosophy that a look put together makes all the difference in gaining an edge above the rest. We spoke to co-owner Sharnamli Mehra Adhar, who tells us about the concept and what styling means to her.

n Styling is mostly associated with celebrities or big fashion

houses. Designing for lay people is such a new and unique concept. How did you come up with this idea? At The Pink Post-It, we provide a platform to talented, young fashion designers from all over the country to showcase their creations and products to an audience that’s not only well read, but also interested in fashion. During the course of my work, I felt that it is not only celebrities who are interested in integrating new trends and looks into their daily outfits. With access to a large number of designers doing interesting work, my friends and family began to ask me for advice and recommendations on their looks. This lead to the launch of my styling agency, Style Right, at The Pink Post-It Summer Cut.

n How do you define styling?

Styling is simply a well-thought-out reflection of yourself, which is in sync with current trends and styles, and makes you feel comfortable in your own skin. n What is the concept of Style Right?

I have been a part of the fashion industry for over five years and have worked for fashion icons such as Manish Arora. As I’ve mentioned, I’ve been styling my friends and family for a while and I felt that just like celebrities, regular people like you and me need styling on a regular basis too. So Style Right caters to the following: n Anyone who wants to be styled, whether it’s for a particular occasion such as a wedding or a new job, or whether it’s simply partywear or for college. n Someone looking to change or revamp their style. n People aiming to learn how to dress according to their age and size. n If you want to style yourself on a fixed budget. n Did you always see yourself in the styling field?

As far as I can remember, fashion has always been on my mind and I always knew that I would be part of it in some way or the other. Over the years, running my own fashion events brand has helped me gain a bit of experience and I

ShaDeS ThaT SuIT you If you believe just that red suits fair skin the most, just look at how gorgeous Rihanna looks with her flaming mane! Here, we tell you what shades you should pick depending on your skin tone.

Dark The darker your skin tone, the more blue-red you should go. Steer clear of orange-y, warm reds as they don’t look flattering on dark skin. Purplebased reds such as berry and wine will look marvelous on a dark skin tone.

Medium Those with a medium skin tone should pick either golden red, bright copper or copper highlights to create a visual separation between their skin and hair! This ensures that you don’t make a mess with everything blending together.

Fair If you’ve got fair skin, you should choose bright orange red, medium auburn, soft ginger or brownish copper as this will create a nice contrast against your skin and will make your features stand out. There’s something very odd about this dress, especially the way it’s wrapped around Huma’s upper body. We do like her makeup and hair, but the dress makes her look too jazz-y for the occasion. Her shoes aren’t visible and the lack of accessories is just hurting our eyes. Huma, please change your stylist!

Nimrat is totally nailing this look! We are in absolute awe of how she has matched this outfit — from her shoes, hair to the clutch everything is right on the money. The slit of her dress is just right and her sleek hair is making her look pretty chic. Her winged eyes and neutral lips are doing wonders for the entire look.

Katrina Kaif Talking about Bollywood actresses who rocked the colour red, remember Katrina Kaif in New York? Her red and black locks created headlines. She recently coloured her hair red in real life as well and we absolutely love it!

Priyanka Chopra You may not remember Priyanka’s film Love Story 2050, but she did make a major fashion statement with a surprising carrot-red hue. If you’re bold enough to go light, this is the colour for you.

reD SwaTCheS For you to rock the colour as much as our celebrities, a colour chart will help you choose the perfect shade. Take a look at our guide before you hit the salon! n Reddish Blonde is also called Strawberry

Blonde. Since, it is a warm colour, it seamlessly blends with warm skin tones and lightcoloured eyes. n Light Auburn is similar to natural red hair.

While it suits fairer skin and light eyes the most, take your eyebrows before you get in dye. n A rich hue, Medium Auburn is perfect for

the light to medium skin tone. A light copper shade of brows work best with this colour. n Reddish cinnamon is another gorgeous shade! However, be careful with this one as it fades easily. It looks best on cool skin tones, but avoid washing your hair too often to keep your hair vibrant.

We absolutely love the way Aditi looks in this outfit. If you want to learn how to look chic in an all-black outfit, you should take a cue from her. Her wellstyled curls compliment her outfit extremely well and the shoes make her stand out from the rest. However, her makeup seems to be a little too loud for this look!

We know that Lauren is a dancer but we don’t understand the point of proving that at every event. In this outfit, Lauren appears to have come straight out of a dance performance. This outfit is clearly not the perfect choice for red carpet. But, Lauren does manage to look pretty by wearing neutral makeup.

It’s probably the first time that Mandira has disappointed us with her outfit. She is known for her impeccable sense of style but this time she’s gotten it all wrong. We like the concept of a sari gown but this one doesn’t meet the mark. Just look at how bling-y it is! We expect much more from you Mandira!

douBle role: MoM or Working MoM? I recently secured a job in the fashion industry. I really enjoy my work and it even fulfills my financial needs. But, my job requires me to spend a lot of time away from work and when I do make it home, it’s always late at night. My in-laws expect me to be able to carve out some time for my husband and children, but I don’t want to neglect my work either. This leads to a lot of conflict at home. They suggest that I quit my job and find another with more flexible timings, but I’m really attached to my work and to my colleagues. What should I do? — Vedika Vaswani, Mahim dear Vedika, Spending less time with your family is bad, but spending the little time that you have fighting is worse. Speaking from both sides, both you and your in-laws are right. You need to sort out your priorities by deciding what’s more important to you, family or work. We’re not suggesting choosing one and neglecting the other, but you should draw clear lines between the two. Spending time with your family is essential, otherwise it will lead to distance and fights — when you’re at home, don’t take any phone calls or do any office work. Take regular vacations with your family and even if you don’t spend a lot of time together, be aware of what is happening in their lives. When your in-laws notice that you are equally committed to your work and your family, they will stop arguing with you. Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in before Wednesday

The Feminazi MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JUNE 25, 2015

If your day involves browsing through websites such as Reddit, 9gag and Buzzfeed, we’re sure that you’ve come across the feminazi. Their hearts may be in the right place, but an incorrect understanding of feminism often makes them annoying — especially at work! Dev Goswami recommends answering these questions to see if your colleagues think you’re taking the idea of woman’s rights a bit too far

A

certain group of women (and even a few men)often give feminism a bad name. The concept of equality between men and women has been lost in a constant, almost militant-like, obsession with proving that women are, in fact, superior to men. While personal beliefs are one thing, if you’re reacting to certain situations at work with the same hostility, you may need to change your attitude. Answer these questions to find out if you’re coming across as illogical and unapproachable at work. 1. Do you think that your seniors favour men just because a male colleague with the same designation, but with more work experience, gets paid more than you? a. Yes. b. No. 2. When you’re talking about women’s rights or womenrelated issues, do you address anyone who disagrees with you as sexist? a. Yes. b. No. 3. Have your colleagues stopped cracking jokes, especially those involving women, around you? a. Yes. b. No. 4. Do you believe that you your boss should ask if you’re okay with it before making you work on an assignment with a male colleague? a. Yes. b. No. 5. It’s raining heavily and your female colleagues’ boyfriends are coming to pick them up. Would you consider them dependent or weak? a. Yes. b. No. 6. During lunch, one of your male colleagues is talking about feminism. Do you tell him that he can’t be a feminist because he is not a woman? a. Yes. b. No. 7. While talking to your office colleagues, do you collectively abuse the opposite sex? a. Yes. b. No. Mostly As If you find that your colleagues don’t take you seriously, don’t get frustrated by their shocking lack of interest in your monologues. The reason they lightly brush away anything you say is because you’re coming across as a feminazi, even if you aren’t one. For example, we all feel the need to say ‘Men are pigs,’ when our boyfriends upset us, but saying it in front of colleagues who aren’t aware that you’re just venting, is not a good idea. If you’ve answered all these questions with an ‘a’ then you have a more serious problem — your concept of feminism is flawed. Explaining where you’re going wrong is probably best suited to another story. Meanwhile, remember that feminism is about equality and not superiority. Mostly Bs You’re not a feminazi. You don’t take things to the extreme and can laugh over a joke that makes fun of women, because you know that it’s only a joke. You realise that a man can be as much of a feminist as a woman and you don’t think helpful gestures from men amount to them viewing you as weak or dependent!

CHILD’S PLAY With a large pool to choose from, and with advertising and peer pressure coming into play, selecting the best toy for your child can be a difficult task. Pooja Salvi brings you a few constructive toys for your kids

L

ike most parents, you probably find yourself complaining about how children today are always glued to tablets or mobile phones. But, why is this such a big deal? Well, probably because back in the day, we spent a lot of time playing outdoors and connecting with real people as opposed to beating user KkrazieGuy127643 online. Whether this technology is doing children any good is a raging debate all over the world. There is valid concern about the effect that spending hours crouched in front of a laptop has on your child’s health. Of course, there is another side that defends video games, reasoning that playing these games can improve your child’s motor skills. But, if you’d like your children to experience life like you did, here are a few toys that will ensure constructive growth. They may seem run-offthe-mill, but trust us, they will work wonders.

jigsaw Puzzles The first on the list and the most easily available, jigsaw puzzles boost your child’s imagination. They can keep them engaged for hours and enhance their sense of colour and shape recognition abilities. They also teach them a thing or two about patience — the puzzle is not going to finish itself in half an hour! Start with small puzzles, sit with them and help them figure out how it is done. Once they’ve got a hang of it, move on to bigger ones.

MONOPOly The big daddy of business games, Monopoly is a game for all ages. Teaching your child (fake) money management is like taking small steps to teaching them how to use actual money. The game challenges your children’s mathematical abilities and makes them channel their strategies. Knowing what to buy and when to buy is as important as knowing when to skip a chance to buy a particular item in the game.

legO bricks What better way to allow your child to be innovative and creative than with Lego bricks? Building structures with Lego bricks is a great way for your child to realise how they can transfer their imagination into something real and solid. Block play fosters creative problem solving and improves your child’s spatial skills and mathematical ability.

MechaNix Mechanix is a building game that not only provides your children an outlet for their creative abilities, but also boosts their patience and spatial ability. The box contains several parts that children can use as liberally as they want in order to create something out of the ordinary.

uNO

scrabble

This might not usually be a game you’d call constructive, but, it is! After all the hard work of solving jigsaw puzzles your child deserves a little fun? Not only does UNO teach kids to strategise, it also teaches them what losing and winning feels like, which is a pretty important lesson. So, plan an evening when their friends can come over and play UNO; if that’s not possible, the entire family can sit together after dinner for a game!

Do you think that scrabble is reserved for game nights with your friends? Think again! Whip out the game and teach your child how to play. You may think it’s a game only for children who have a strong vocabulary. But, remember that even a simple two-letter word can turn it around. Scrabble will increase your child’s inquisitiveness and help them learn new words. Curiosity and the willingness to learn — what more could you possibly want!

>> Puzzles make great learning aids for children, because they help improve and build imagination

Don’t make

« SoS: Solve our Situation!

a move! Do you pride yourself on your ability to throw convention down the drain and make the first move? That’s great. But, Dev Goswami says that there are certain situations where it’s best to avoid approaching a guy

M

aking the first move, especially when you’re approaching someone whom you find attractive at a bar or an event, is no longer a man’s move. And, while a friendly smile or warm greeting can certainly help you meet someone interesting, there are times when you should just let the opportunity go. Wondering when and why? Read on. When he’s celebrating a special occasion Celebrations with friends or family usually mean that the group you’re with has come together after a long time. So, breaking him away from his group is a terrible idea. Even if you do catch his attention, he will be in a hurry to get back to his party. This means that if you approach a guy who’s celebrating a friend’s birthday, making meaningful conversation will be difficult. If you really find him attractive and don’t want to miss out on getting to know him, just say hi and pass him a note that says something on the lines of, “We should connect some time. Ping me.” Yes, we said ping, not call — giving out your number to a stranger is a bad idea. Give him a Facebook or chat ID instead. When he’s falling all over the place Really? You want to approach a guy who can’t tell a table from the dance floor? You may find it funny, but he will find it... well, we’re not quite sure. His reaction — or the lack of it — will depend on how drunk he is. He may not have any recollection of the moment the next day, or he may end up making a fool of himself, making you go from ‘Oh, he’s cute!’ to ‘Eww, go away!’ in an instant. Whatever his reaction might be, it’s not worth it.

When he’s your best friend’s brother No, no, no! Unless you’re absolutely sure that your friend will be okay with you hitting on her brother, this is a really bad idea. Women may not have a girl code, but your best friend’s brother is always off limits.

think you can fix our readers’ complicated problems? Read on...

I got a scholarship to work in the U.K. and have been for the last seven months. On my very first day there, I met Danny. He flirted outrageously, making no bones about liking me. It never went beyond drinks after work. And, I thought he was joking...  Till the day he dropped me off at the airport for my flight home to visit... You know, if it ever doesn’t work out with you and him... I’d like to take you out and have you take a chance at something real with me...

Danny... You’re serious? Uh... You ARE serious!

He was being serious and ‘him’ was my first boyfriend, Atul, the love of my life for nine years! Who before I left, swore fidelity...

And, asked me to promise to wait for him. He even gave me a promise ring... Which I wore faithfully every day. Which Danny noticed that very first day and bemoaned his bad timing with me so dramatically that I didn’t have time to miss Atul or home or anything much really...

Even if your friend is amenable to you going out with her brother, think of how it will affect your friendship. If you still think it’s worth the risk, make sure to check with your friend slyly. Say something like, ‘Woah your brother is hot!’ and see her reaction. When you’re in public transport Why would you try to approach a guy who is probably cursing the unruly autodrivers of Mumbai or has just escaped the metaphorical clutches of several men in the local train? Talking to you isn’t going to make his day any brighter than it already is, and in a city like ours, where walking without a sense of purpose and pace is almost criminal, the best scenario here is that he will give you a smile and brush past you before you can complete your greeting. The worst, of course, is that he mistakes you for someone trying to steal his auto, gives you a dirty look and moves a little ahead so that he can hail one before you.

When he doesn’t respond This should be a no-brainer. The first rule of approaching someone is that you give them a sly look and a warm smile to see if they return your interest. If he doesn’t, listen to your brain, which is asking you to back off, and not your heart, which is suggesting that he probably didn’t notice you and so, you should be a bit more upfront. When you’ve failed to catch his eye a couple of times, it means that he is not interested. Making a move will only make you seem desperate.

An engagement ring this time... Not a promise ring. And then here I was and...

When he’s on a date What exactly are you thinking here? There’s a guy, he has a girlfriend and they’re sharing a cosy dinner. But, the moment you give him a flirty smile and go up to say hi, he’s going to leave his girlfriend hanging and settle down on another table with you. Wake up, miss! This is, and always will be, nothing more than a dream!

« Dear grace, i have a problem... Dear Grace, My boyfriend has a habit of picking a fight over petty things. The other day, he created a scene at the railway station ticket counter because the ticket attendant didn’t have any change. He argued with the attendant for about 10 minutes, holding up the line and calling the attendant a liar. When I tried calming him down, he ended up shouting at me — in public! I’ve tried for a long time to get him to let the small things go, but it’s all been in vain. Do you have any advice for me? — Twinkle Jagtiani, Kharghar Dear Twinkle, It seems as though your boyfriend has a control issue. He takes offence on principle and isn’t clearheaded about the matter at hand,

Yet, until Danny said that... All I could think of had been seeing Atul again! I had got the feeling he was going to propose...

even if he’s fighting for something as small as change. While it’s good to have principles, this is an idealistic view of the world, and you need to explain this to him. When he’s calm, talk to him about how he tends to overreact to the smallest of things and what the consequences of his actions could be. Also, tell him that no matter how angry he is, shouting at you in public is just not done, especially when you’re not even involved in the fight. From what you’ve described, however, it’s unlikely he will be able to keep a clear head during such times. You need to think about whether you want to be with such a person, who may create a scene even when it’s not the smartest (of safest) thing to do. Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in

All I could manage on seeing the love of my life, who was crying with happiness, was a huge fake smile! “I was happy to see him. But, it didn’t feel ‘HUGE’. It felt like I’d never left and had met him an hour ago. I know I love him, but I am not sure what to say if he proposes! And, I keep thinking of Danny. Help!” Saroj a) Atul was the love of your till Danny offered a choice. I think you need to take your time deciding which one, or neither. b) Are you sure you want to throw away nine years with the man who you thought was the love of your life till a short seven months ago, for an office flirtation with someone you barely know? Think hard. c) Did it ever occur to you that Danny might be a player, who perhaps went for you only after finding out about your boyfriend? Still, it sounds as if you are having second thoughts about Atul. Talk to them both! LAST WEEK: Yamini N should pick option B: No chemistry is no chemistry. Try again. And again if necessary. Next time, wait till you meet before deciding/ telling him, he is the man of your dreams! You led yourself on!

St Stephen’s molestation row escalates; HRD, DCW seek report

N

ew Delhi: St Stephen's professor Satish Kumar, facing allegation of molesting a PhD scholar, today found himself in a tight spot as the HRD ministry and Delhi Commission for Women have sought action-taken report from the college about the incident. Kumar, an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry, was yesterday denied anticipatory bail by a Delhi Court in connection with the case. The professor, also the Bursar of the college, has resigned from the post following which the college's Governing Body today made a new appointment. He will, however, continue to discharge his teaching responsibilities. "HRD ministry had sent a directive to Delhi University seeking a re-

port in connection with the sexual harassment case. The communication was forwarded by DU Registrar to the college and I have sent a status report on it to the university," St Stephen's Principal Valson Thampu told PTI. Asked about the content of his reply, Thampu said, "I have explained the sequence of events which unfolded from the day the girl had approached me with her complaint. I have also attached relevant" documents. I have nothing to hide". The student, who is doing her PhD under Kumar, had approached police last week alleging that she was molested by the teacher in October, 2013. She has also alleged that college principal Thampu tried to protect

him when the matter was reported to the college authorities. The victim stated in her complaint that Thampu had "criminally intimidated her to give a written application to him expressing her consent to close the matter in the college itself in order to not cause any delay or problems in completion of her PhD". Thampu told that while the matter was reported to the college's Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), a statutory body to deal with such complaints, the girl had also forwarded a complaint to the university's chemistry department. "It wasn't clear from the HRD directive whether a status report has been sought from both the committees or St Stephen's alone," he said. Pics: PTI

BJP has opened ‘Lalit Kala Academy’ to defend ex-IPL boss: Cong N

ew Delhi: Taking a potshot at BJP over 'Lalitgate', Congress today said that the ruling party has opened a "Lalit Kala Academy" to defend the "black deeds" of the controversial former IPL boss. "It seems BJP has opened a Lalit Kala Academy to train its spokespersons in how to defend Lalit Modi," party spokesman Tom Vadakkan told reporters here. Noting that BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao had dubbed Lalit Modi as a "victim", Vadakkan said if the argument was taken to its logical conclusion, then it meant that Modi needed protection. However, he added that another BJP leader, Member of Parliament RK Singh, has described Modi as a "fugitive". Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has given a "clean chit" to Dushyant Singh, son of Rajasthan

Parliament’s monsoon session to begin on July 21 N

ew Delhi: The Monsoon Session of Parliament is all set to begin on July 21, but it will be a truncated three-week affair. The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs (CCPA) is learnt to have recommended the dates for the monsoon session during which the government is expected to face an opposition attack over the 'Lalitgate' issue. The monsoon session is generally a four-week affair. The earlier proposal was to commence the session from July 20, a Monday. But as the festival of Eid may fall on July 18 or 19, a decision was taken to start it from July 21. The session is likely to be stormy

this time with the government facing mounting criticism from the opposition on the Lalit Modi controversy and land acquisition ordinance issue. Home Minister Rajnath Singh heads CCPA which also has several senior ministers, including Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, as its members. Congress has been warning that the upcoming session could be in jeopardy if External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia were not made to resign on the Lalit Modi row. BJP has, however, rejected the demand. Leader of the Opposition in

Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad has said that it would virtually impossible to transact any business if the opposition demands are not met over the Lalit Modi issue. The amendments to the Lokpal and Lokayukta Act, the Railways (Amendment) Bill, the Waterways Bill, the GST Bill, the amendments to the land acquisition bill, Compensatory Afforestation Fund Bill and Benami Transactions (Prohibition) amendment Bill, 2015 are some of the key measures pending in Parliament. Lok Sabha had 35 sittings during the budget session, the highest in the last five years, while Rajya Sabha held 32 sittings.

Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, but had toned down his remarks after a public outcry, Vadakkan further stated. Saying that Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has given a clean chit to Raje, the Congress spokesman claimed all this has exposed the utter confusion within BJP on the Lalitgate issue. Which is the reason why it has opened the "Lalit Kala Academy", he said. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Raje have been facing flak for "helping" Modi procure travel documents in the UK, a country which he has made his home to avoid legal processes in India. Modi, 49, travelled to London in 2010 after the Indian Premier League became embroiled in allegations of match-fixing and illegal betting.

an Francisco: Government will "play by the rule book" and make sure that absolute standards of probity are maintained, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said as the Opposition continued its attack over the Lalit Modi controversy. Jaitley also said there is "no question at all" about the government going on the back foot on this issue, as it has done "nothing wrong". "The government will play by the rule book and we will make sure that the absolute standards of probity are maintained," Jaitley told PTI in an interview here. Asked whether the controversy was creating an impression that some leaders of the ruling party and the government were siding with corrupt people, Jaitley said, "There is no question at all." To a question on the Opposition planning to disrupt the Monsoon Session of Parliament on the Lalit Modi issue, Jaitley said Parliament is meant to discuss and not to disrupt business. "We are willing to have a discussion on any subject that the Opposition wants," he said. The Finance Minister also said that the reforms can even take

place outside Parliament, but its smooth functioning was important for many other reasons. "There are also some legislative reforms for which Parliament must function," he said. Under attack from the opposition, Jaitley had yesterday said the authorities would continue to do their job in probing the matter. Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj have been facing flak for allegedly helping former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi in procuring travel documents in the UK, a country which he has made his home to avoid legal processes in India. Modi, 49, travelled to London in 2010 after the Indian Premier League (IPL) got embroiled in allegations of match-fixing and illegal betting. Dushyant Singh, Raje's son, has also been under attack over reports that his company received Rs 11.63 crore in investments from Modi in 2008. Congress has accused Jaitley of doing a "clear-cut cover-up" on the entire issue and of influencing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) probe in Dushyant Singh and Modi's case.

Narrow escape for Gadkari, red carpet gets entangled in chopper H

aldia (WB): Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari escaped unhurt today when the red carpet laid out for him was blown into the air and got entangled in the rotor blades of his helicopter while it was landing here. The red carpet at the helipad ground here was routinely laid out as part of the guard of honour for visiting VIPs. As the chopper was landing, its rotors created a gust of strong wind

and the rug was blown into the air and got caught in the rotors. The Minister's office said Gadkari was absolutely safe. "The carpet got dislodged from the ground due to sudden wind. There was no fault either on the part of the arrangement nor on the part of the pilot in following the DGCA-approved route," it said in a statement. Gadkari, who was here to attend a programme, told reporters that

carpet or flags should not have been placed (near the landing site). "They should be careful about it," he said. "Cloth got stuck in the wings of my helicopter while it was landing. But there is no accident. I am safe," he said. Visuals on TV channels showed that carpets and tarpaulin sheets placed near the helipad started to fly when the chopper was landing. PTI

S

entiment at some of Asia's biggest firms has deteriorated as a slowing Chinese economy, Greek sovereign debt crisis and looming U.S. interest rate hike create deepening concern about the state of the world economy, reveals a Thomson Reuters/INSEAD survey. The Thomson Reuters/INSEAD Asian Business Sentiment Index fell to 70 for the June quarter, from 71 in March and 74 in the same period last year. A reading over 50 indicates an overall positive view. Though gradual, the decline suggests the wait-and-see approach of top businesses is evolving from a passing phase to ingrained cautiousness as questions persist about the structural soundness of economies in China, Europe and the United States. "Progress in some areas is compensated by increasing risks in another," said INSEAD Professor Antonio Fatas. "There is increasing concern for China and possibly for other emerging markets in the region as the U.S. Federal Reserve starts raising rates. There is no great excitement to compensate for the risks of the region and the broader world economy." Companies in India recorded the steepest fall in confidence, logging 84 from 97 in the previous quarter, as fervour over the election of pro-business Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year gives way to anxiety about whether two rate cuts this year can reignite a sluggish economy. The biggest gainer was Thailand, scoring 94 versus 79, as firms adjusted to the disruption of a May 2014 military coup as well as two rate cuts which the central bank said had stabilised the economy. Chinese firms were the least optimistic for the first time in nine quarters, with a score near flat at 55. The world's second-largest economy so far this year has grown its slowest in over half a decade dogged by concerns of a property bubble and soft data on retail sales, industrial output and fixed asset investment.

Thomson Reuters and global business school INSEAD conducted the poll from June 8 to 20. Of 117 respondents, 40% were positive - from 45% in the previous quarter - while 60% were neutral. None were negative. The biggest risk respondents cited was global economic uncertainty, followed by rising costs. Other risks included regulatory uncertainty and rising competition.

Sebi Bans Three Firms From Raising Money From Public By A Business Reporter

M

arket regulator Sebi has barred three firms -Matribhumi Projects, Jugantor Realty and Waris Finance and Investmentand their directors from mobilising money from investors through the issuance of securities for allegedly violating public issue norms. The move follows Sebi receiving complaints against these companies alleging non–repayment of amount in respect of NonConvertible Secured Redeemable Debentures (NCDs). Sebi found that Matribhumi Projects raised Rs 4 crore through issuance of NCDs in 2012-13, Jugantor Realty and Waris Finance raked in Rs 13.28 crore and Rs 5.12 crore, respectively between 201011 and 2011-12 through such issue. However, the number of Allottees in these cases are not known. The companies, through such activities, had allegedly violated various norms, Sebi said. The regulator observed that allotment of NCDs by the firms were a public issue, which under the rules require a compulsory listing on a recognised stock exchange. It was also required to file a prospectus, among others, which they failed to do. They have been restrained from accessing the securities markets, Sebi said.

“I

am shocked that the RBI has cut in such small portions; the repo rate which the banks have not reduced. It should surprise with a 75 basis points and reduce the interest rates.” said former finance minister, Yashwant Sinha. Sharply critical of the Reserve Bank of India, he emphasised that the RBI needed to reduce interest rates, but was being stingy in reducing repo rate, especially now that the inflation is under control. Sinha continued his criticism of Raghuram Rajan, the Governor of RBI, “Only a bad economist will say that one can control food inflation through monetary policy. We started to attack food inflation by increasing the interest rate. We have recovered from the slowdown through efforts and now the RBI governor needs to cut interests by 23% to give impetus to the industry.” He was speaking at a function in Mumbai hosted by the World Trade Centre and All India Association of Industries, who felicitated Yashwant Sinha on being conferred “Officer of the Legion of Honour” The highest French Civilian Distinction by the Government of France. The former finance minister expressed shock that the RBI is not stringent in implementing the rate cuts. “How can the central bank ask private bankers to implement interest cuts and these banks are refusing to do it. We cannot have such a situation. I have recommended that RBI needs to categorise the defaulters and not punish all people. It is time RBI took some responsibility on itself,” said an emphatic Sinha. He feels the firewalls between the central government and RBI need to be removed, as this is an opportune time for India to become a leader in Asia and world. “India has proved to the world and we have consistently taken steps in the right direction. Corporate Debt Restructure is not

the only solution. The business sector needs to be given relief. As a finance minister, I gave impetus to remove hurdles and support good projects. With the current recessionary trend in Euro Zone we are seeing people are looking towards India. We should not miss this opportunity and the government should do everything to support the manufacturing sector,” said Sinha. “First ‘Make in India’ and automatically Make in India will follow. As a finance minister, I was laughed at when we went ahead to build national highways and roads. We did not have the equipment and I helped to reduce the import duties on the equipment required to build these highways and roads. Once I reduced the duties, we are today making this machinery. I strongly believe, we first should Make in India,” said Sinha. He also urged the micro and small scale entrepreneurs to now grab the opportunity to collaborate with foreign firms instead of depending on the governments. “It is an excellent time for the micro and small entrepreneurs to grab the opportunity instead of blaming the administration. The PM has gone out to every important country in the world that can help make in India. Many of these countries have a strong MSME sector. Now it is the responsibility of the MSMEs here to connect and collaborate,” emphasised Sinha. In his welcome address, Kamal Morarka, the Chairman of World Trade Centre (WTC) Mumbai recalled his association with Sinha as Parliamentarian and said it was personally a great honour to felicitate him. “Sinha has vast experience in political life and it is a huge achievement. Sinha has vast knowledge in different fields and we have seen him as a fine minister of external affairs and a finance minister who has given one of the best budgets,” said Morarka. He further appreciated Sinha’s political acumen and the

positive impact Sinha has made. Morarka emphasised, “This is an extraordinary honour, appreciating the efforts Sinha has taken as an external affairs minister and he is the first Indian politician to be conferred this honour.” In his vote of thanks, Vijay Kalantri, the President of AIAI said, “Sinha’s observation on Make India is important. As finance minister Sinha implemented saral forms and abolished the Dividend Tax. He was also the one to bring inflation under control. He was the finance minister who brought stable policies and created a good political and economic environment.” Shatrughan Sinha, Member of Parliament too was present on this occasion. The function was very well attended by Industrialists, Consular Corps and eminent persons from all walks of life.

Journalist-turned-director Vinod Kapri says he decided to make ‘Miss Tanakpur Haazir Ho’, a social satire based on real incidents, as he felt he could not do justice with it as a scribe

‘MISS TANAKPUR...’ “T

here are some stories which you cannot say in two columns, or in halfan-hour time slot, some stories you need to tell with more detailing. And the incident which inspired me to work on 'Miss Tanakpur...' was one such story," Kapri told PTI. "It was a news about a boy who was sentenced five years of jail for raping a buffalo. I got intrigued by the story and visited the village in Rajasthan, met the boy, his family, the accusers, doctors, lawyers, veterinary doctors and interesting stories started to unfold," he said. The director has managed to bring together an ensemble cast of talented actors like Annu Kapoor, Sanjay Mishra, Ravi Kishan, Rahul Bagga and Hrishitaa Bhatt in the movie. "I was fortunate I could work with the actors I had on my mind while I was writing the characters. It wasn't difficult convincing anybody. Dates were the only problem." Funnyman Sanjay Mishra, who is essaying the role of a 'Tantrik' feels, to play such a unique character one

VERY INTRIGUING SUBJECT Director Vinod Kapri needs to strike a perfect chemistry with other characters. "I am playing a 'Tantrik' in the film. To help me in my role I was given this 'red book' with solutions a 'Tantrik' would give for various problems.

"However, to improvise and portray a role you need good supportive characters. The chemistry me, Annu Kapoor and Ravi Kishen share is perfect and has brought out the best from all of us," said the 'Dum Laga Ke Haisha' actor. Annu Kapoor who was last seen in 'Dharam Sankat Mein' is playing the shrewd head of a village. "I am playing the head of the village and Maya (Hrishitaa) is my wife. I play the main antagonist in the film," he said. Bhojpuri superstar Ravi Kishan believes 'Miss Tanakpur...' is a beautiful love story set against a social satire. "I am playing Bheema, who has everything but wants to be the 'Pradhan' of the village. He is well built but a dumb man. From Shyam Benegal to Mani Ratnam, I have worked with all big names but working on this film

has given me immense pleasure." "Haasil" actress Hrishitaa will be seen playing the role of a rebellious village girl in the movie "Maya is a village girl but she is not shy. She is a rebellious character but she is also very limited within her social boundaries. "I am more than happy to be a part of such a wonderful script. The film will be a surprise and a shock, but it will entertain you all throughout," said the 34-year-old actress. Presented by Fox Star Studios, 'Miss Tanakpur Haazir Ho' is slated to release on June 26.

‘Jurassic World’ earns Rs100 crore in India

C

hris Pratt-Irrfan starrer 'Jurassic World', the fourth film in the 'Jurassic Park' film series, has grossed Rs.100 crore at the Indian box-office. The Colin Trevorrow-directed adventure extravaganza saw a multi-lingual pan-India release entered the elite Rs.100 crore in its third week, reports PTI. It released in 2,108 screens in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. "Being the true sequel to 'Jurassic Park', the movie brings a sense of nostalgia for Indian audiences. Moreover, the adventurous theme of the movie can be enjoyed by all age groups together, which has helped in drawing family audiences to the theaters. "First 'Fast and Furious 7' and now 'Jurassic World', the summer has shown that India is establishing itself as a big market for Hollywood content," Universal Pictures India stated in a statement. "Jurassic World" took place on the same fictional island of Isla Nublar, where a now fullyfunctioning dinosaur theme park has been in operation for ten years. The film narrates the 22years after the events of ‘Jurassic Park’.

Keep yoga away from politics: Shilpa Shetty A

ctress Shilpa Shetty, an ardent follower of yoga, says the ancient Indian practice of staying fit should not be mixed with politics. The 40-year-old 'Life In a Metro' star's comment came after many politicians called the International Yoga Day celebrations a political affair. "My relation with yoga is on a whole different level. It's very spiritual. If you want to change your lifestyle with yoga then it should be kept away from politics," Shilpa told PTI. The actress was in the capital with husband Raj Kundra to launch celebrity-

endorsed products of Best Deal TV exclusively on Amazon. Asked how frequently she does online shopping, "I am a big shopaholic unfortunately and my husband's credit card bill is the proof of that. I shop everything online including home decor stuff. I feel online shopping is best because it's very convenient and also give an advantage of choosing from an array of products." The mother of one, who is busy in parenting her three-year-old son Viaan Raj Kundra, is also planning to pen a book on health and nutrition to emphasize the importance of Indian food. "I really have been passionate about making people aware of

nutrition because that is an important part of good health. If you are working out and not eating right then it's all futile. I also feel that people have forgotten how amazing the Indian food is to have a good health," she said. Shilpa has so far no intentions of making a full-fledged comeback to the big screen after a small appearance at last year's Sunny Deol-Harman Baweja starrer 'Dishkiyaoon', which was produced by her. "My son is my priority and I am a full-time homemaker and rest is part-time. I love being a mother and wife. I will do something on big screen when the right time comes. But I will definitely do TV," she said.

India overcome the Bangaldeshi hurdle with a 77-run win, thus not returning home empty-handed

By Anisur Rahman

M

IRPUR: India restored some pride with a consolation 77-run win over Bangladesh in third and final ODI here to prevent the spirited hosts from securing a famous 3-0 series whitewash. India, put in to bat, put up a competitive 317 for six courtesy under-fire captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (69 runs off 77 balls) and opener Shikhar Dhawan (75 off 73)). Suresh Raina put up an allround effort, scoring 38 before ending with career best figures of three for 45. The home team flattered to deceive in the chase with its batsmen squandering promising starts, eventually ending at 240 all out to give India their first and only win of the short tour. Bangladesh were cruising in the first 10 overs despite losing the experienced Tamim Iqbal (5) early. Young Soumya Sarkar (40 off 34) showed once again he is a batsman to watch out for during his entertaining stay at the crease. The opener played shots all around the wicket in the company of Litton Das (34 off 50), smashing five fours and two sixes to send the crowd into a frenzy. Like some of his teammates, Sarkar looked set for a big score until he mistimed a slower one off Dhawal Kulkarni, giving a simple catch to Ravichandran Ashwin at midon. However, the game was very much alive with Bangladesh reaching 65 for two in 10 overs. Das and Mushfiqur Rahim (24 off 30) got together and shared a 50-run stand before the two fell in quick succession, leaving their team at 118 for four in the 22nd over. And

Brief scores: India 317/6 in 50 overs (M S Dhoni 69; Shikhar Dhawan 75; Mashrafe Mortaza 3/76, Mustafizur Rahman 2/57) bt Bangladesh 240 all out in 47 overs (Soumya Sarkar 40, Litton Das 34, Sabbir Rahman 43; Dhawal Kulkarni 2/34, R Ashwin 2/35) 77 runs.

when premier all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan departed to make it 148 for five, Bangladesh's hopes of another famous win over India were receding fast. However, Sabbir Rahman (43 off 38) and Nasir Hossain (32 off 30) were not to go down without a fight. The duo hammered 49 off 38 balls for the sixth wicket as the dew made batting easier in the second half of the game.

Earlier, Dhawan starred with the bat before beleaguered skipper Dhoni struck a gritty fifty to take India to a defendable total. India relied on Dhoni's 93run stand for the fourth wicket with Ambati Rayudu (44 off 49) and Dhawan's 75-run partnership for the second wicket with Virat Kohli (25 off 35). Raina hit a 21-ball 38, with three fours and two sixes, giving the innings a muchneeded thrust. Dhoni, who was criticised following the team's first ODI series defeat to Bangladesh and for his own poor run of form, had to work hard for his runs. England can ‘beat the best’, Djokovic, Serena top seeds at Wimbledon, Nadal no 10 L says buoyant Morgan

M

ANCHESTER: England limited overs captain Eoin Morgan said the national side had shown they "could beat the best in the world in any game of cricket" after ensuring New Zealand's tour ended on a losing note. Having defeated New Zealand - who thrashed England by eight wickets at Wellington in February en route to the World Cup final -3-2 in a thrilling one-day international series, Morgan's men inflicted a 56-run thrashing upon the Black Caps in Tuesday's tour-ending Twenty20 international at Old Trafford. "This felt a million miles away after the World Cup," said Morgan of a global tournament where England suffered a

humiliating first-round exit without beating a single rival Test nation. "This is a fantastic way to finish what has been a great month of cricket," he added. "When you're trying to implement change within a group it's important to have successes along the way and these guys have had that. "We've done it the way we said we would and that's important too. I want these guys to play with as much freedom as possible." Man-of-the-match Joe Root top-scored with 68 in England's 191 for seven, but New Zealand were well-placed at 88 for two and requiring 104 off the last 12 overs for victory.

ONDON: Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams were named top seeds for Wimbledon today as two-time champion Rafael Nadal was seeded at 10, his lowly status reflecting his recent struggles. Defending champion Djokovic and five-time winner Williams are both current world number ones and their top billing was a formality. Former number one Nadal, the Wimbledon champion in 2008 and 2010, has endured a miserable record at the All England Club in recent times, losing in the second, first and fourth round on his last three visits. He was dethroned as French Open champion this season and despite winning the grass-court title in Stuttgart, he was then bun-

29 Rampal’s twin strike help Indian women beat Poland 3-1

Antwerp (Belgium): Rani Rampal scored two goals to put Indian women team into winning ways with a 3-1 triumph over Poland in the preliminary league of the Hockey World League Semifinals at the KHC Dragons Stadium. Coming back into the team after a nine-month break due to injury, Rampal converted a penalty corner and then scored a fine field goal with a flash strike in open play to overcome the crowding tactics of the Polish rivals in a Pool B encounter. The Indian eves were earlier beaten by Belgium and New Zealand in previous two matches. While getting into winning form, they missed a lot of chances before sealing victory with the third goal which was set up by Rampal. India were dominant from the start, laying seize on the rival circle in the first quarter, but failed to have a good shot at the opposition goal. Three penalty corners were wasted as the Indian eves got caught in tangles after wasting time dribbling inside the circle instead of having a crack at the goal. It was against the run of play that Poland actually managed find the back of the Indian goal in the 19th minute, but the goal was reversed on a review sought by India. The ball had struck a polish striker on the foot before it was passed to Magdalena Zagajska, who swatted it into the net. Within a minute, India took the lead on their fifth penalty corner a Rampal's shot beat the rival goalkeeper to end in the left corner of the goal. India had a good chance to bolster the score in the 27th minute when Poland's defenders lost the ball in their own territory and were caught off-guard as the Indians mounted a raid. Rampal picked a pass on top of the circle and squared it to Ritu Rani, whose shot lacked the direction or power to beat Polish custodian Marta Kucharska. Rampal again shot on target in the 28th minute after being fed a short pass by Ritu Rani from the left. She beat the opposition goalkeeper with a deft placement. Poland's defence managed to thwart the Indians by crowding their territory and managed to reduce the margin in the 49th minute when India conceded a self goal.

UMBAI: After creating a huge upset in the Indosnesian Open by overpowering world number one Chen Long, world number 10 Parupalli Kashyap is all set to take the positives from his recent tryst with form in to the forthcoming World Championship which is to be held in Jakarta in August. While his celebrations of the win over Long were shortlived after the semi-finals match slipped out of his grasp – losing to Japanese Kento Momota 21-12, 17-21, 19-21 – the Hyderabad born shuttler feels he will have to work more intently on the business end of his match. Kashyap during an interaction of Olympic Gold Quest said that he was working on certain critical areas which he needs to address oon. “We are playing so many tournaments a year and I can fine tune on a couple of areas. This year, I played in Australia and Indonesia and the two matches which I played I lost in similar ways. There were a couple of areas where I committed mistakes. I was getting carried away with the situation especially in Indosnesia where I was playing better than everyone in the tournament and I just need to check that and this is where I need to relax,” said Kashyap. Speaking on his sensational win against Chinese shuttler Chen Long, the 28year-old Indian who overcame Long 14-21 21-17 21-14 said he amongst the

National kababdi player allegedly assaulted

K

ANPUR: Kanpur police lodged a complaint in connection with the alleged assault of national level Kabaddi player Sneha Singh, popularly known as Dolly, after conducting a medical test on her. According to the medical examination, Dolly suffered several minor injuries but a medical report from a private medical hospital showed a fractured nose. "After receiving the medical reports, complaint have been lodged against the culprits under the IPC section 323, 504, 506, 452 and 325," SSP Kanpur Shalabh Mathur said. "Under the supervision of SP, our force has been divided into two teams to search for the culprits", he added.

The incident took place on Jun 15 near her house when the two accused, Ujala Thakur and Gandhi, misbehaved and tried to molest Dolly but she resisted the attack. The two accused landed at her house the following day and allegedly beat her with lathi causing a fractured nose. Her relatives also suffered minor injuries due to the abrupt attack. Though culprits threatened the family from going to the police, the same day Sneha went to the Barra police station and filed a written complaint. However, according to Sneha, "the police took the complaint very lightly and filed the case under minor sections." "They did't even try to catch hold of the culprits," she claimed.

and adopt a better finishing approach in close encounters. “The consistency is coming. Without consistency I don't think [Kidambi]Srikanth will be ranked fourth and I will be ranked tenth. We are reaching the quarters and semi-finals but I believe that we will start to win tournaments and consistently at that. I

am just focussed on the few things that have to change to pull out these matches. The Chen Long match could have been the final,” the India ranked number two said.

SYSTEM CHANGE IS GOOD Kashyap attributed his rise in the men's ranking to the regular national camps which were being held in Hyderabad by national coach Puella Gopichand. Despite, the eves consistently perfoming well, it was the men's section where doubts prevailed. The shuttler said that due to playing with top ranked Indians, the players were better equipped to challenge their international opponents. “There has been a system change and that is very good for us. There have been consistent national camps where all the top players practice and compete at regular intervals. Hence, we get to play against different styles.” He said that he recognized the value of winning a gold in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games which he feels inspired him to 'go for gold' in World Championships and also aim and prepare well for the Rio Games. “After reaching the quarter-finals of the London Olympics, coach Gopichand told me that I should aim for higher goals and not to be satisfied with a quarter-final finish, even if it meant that I was the only Indian to reach that pedistal. When I won a gold in Glasgow, I wanted more gold medals and I want to win one in Rio also,” he added.

The 18-year-old Sanjana from Goregaon, who will be representing the National team in the Team Championship and doubles events, believes she and the Indian team will do well in Bangkok. She does not consider any country as the favourites to dominate the championship. “All the participating countries, including China, Indonesia, hosts Thailand and India, are more or less equally balanced and anyone has a chance to win the top honours,” observed Sanjana.

A roll ball match in progress.

GET SET TO ROCK WITH ROLL BALL Dhabade, a school teacher by profession has invented ‘Roll Ball’, a combination of basketball and skating, which will see teams compete in the third World Cup at Pune in December

By Parth Khatau

UMBAI: Raju Dhabade has earned the rare distcinction in India and across the globe of having inventing a nascent yet funfilled sport of 'Roll ball'. Though the game hasnt gained popularity among the masses but it ast the moment played in 30 countries. Dhabade, a physical education instructor at the MES Balshikshan Mandir English Medium School, Kothrud, Pune with more than 25 years of experience under his belt, closely studied different sports played all over India. “I wanted to create a sport that was born in India and that could be the pride of Indian sport worldwide” he said. The idea of Rollball came about in the year 2003, when an errant basketball interrupted his skating instruction. “Roller Skating on old school quads is still popular in India and ball sports have always been well liked. Hence, I thought of combining the two” said Dhabade. The game is played between two teams of 12 players each and six are allowed to play on court at a time, the rest being substitutes. The game is played on skates and a player must dribble the ball while carrying it. It can be played on an iceskating rink as well. “Since it is played on skates, the game is extremely fast and is highly entertaining to watch as well” said Raju Dhabade. He was awarded the “Raja Mantri Puraskar' in December 2005 by the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Vilasrao Deshmukh. By the year 2006, rollball was recognized by the Indian Olympic Association and Dhabade and his team had taken the game overseas. “ I sold some of my ancestral land

just so that I could fund trips abroad in order to promote the sport,” said Dhabade. The sport has 30 member countries playing the sport including neighbours Nepal, Pakistan and Bangaldesh. The sport was so well received abroad that the first Rollball World Cup, held in 2011, was won by Denmark and not hosts India. Rollball has also been greatly promoted in many Indian schools where matches are played in the under 11, under 14 and under 17 sections. Rollball is a complete non contact sport and hence this reduces the risk of injury to players. A player who commits a foul more than twice is sent off and if a team commits more than five fouls, a penalty is awarded to the opponents. In Mumbai, The St Mary’s School - Andheri, St John High School in Thane and the Sacred Heart High School in Kalyan have the facilities to play Rollball and adults of all ages can be a part of the game. Dhabade said he wished the games gets an entry in to the Olympics someday. “ My dream is to see Rollball be a part of the Olympic Games someday and I will do all I can to make that happen “ he said. The Pune based school teacher rues the fact that due to the nascent nature of the sport, sponsorship is hard to find. “ All of us pool in money to make things happen. This includes members of the Rollball Federation , players, coaches and match officials. We have always been on a shoe string budget,” he added. Inspite of all the challenges he faces, the efforts of Dhabade are more than commendable and the work he has done in the past many years has been inspiring. There, however, is still a long way to go and a lot of work to be done before Rollball makes a mark in the world and one can only hope that the third Rollball World Cup which is to be held in Pune in December, is the beginning of just that.

NTWERP: India may have enjoyed a winning run in the opening two games of the ongoing Hockey World League semifinals, but coach Paul van Ass admits that the team has faced penalty corner issues in the absence of injured drag flicker Rupinder Pal Singh. India's penalty corner attempts have made little impression in the matches against minnows France and Poland, although stand-in shooter Manpreet Singh scored a goal in the opening fixture. Constantine identifies PIO for national team N

EW DELHI: Indian football coach Stephen Constantine said he has identified a few persons of Indian origin (PIO), who would "add great value" to the beleaguered national team, which sunk to a new low after losing in the World Cup qualifiers to Guam recently. "I would like the opportunity to select some of the players that are of Indian origin or have roots here to play for the Indian national team. There are a number of players that I have identified who would add great value to the team and obviously improve us as a whole," Constantine wrote on his official blog. The 52-year-old Briton, however, added that this may not necessarily mean a long-time solution. "This is, of course, not the long-term solution, it is a way where we can improve results in the next few years now but at the same time make sure we are doing the

right things when it come to developing players here in India," he said. The PIO issue once again came to the fore after India's 1-2 defeat to Guam (174), ranked 33 places below the South Asian nation. After the loss, Constantine raised the issue citing Guam's example who fielded several US-based players during their win against India.

Rupinder out of the squad, deciding to include only frontline drag-flicker in Raghunath. The coach felt it was opportunity to test new strategies in set-piece execution, with other players in focus. This luxury is offered to the Indian coach by the fact that the team has already qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games. India could afford not to field their best squad in the World League Semifinals, which otherwise is the last chance for some teams to qualify for the Olympics. In the past two years, India have been served well by the efficiency of dragflickers Raghunath and Rupinder. Raghunath is the senior of the two drag-flickers and shared the space with ace shooter Sandeep Singh before Rupinder came into the spotlight with a fine show in Malaysia four years ago. In due course, he replaced penalty corner specialist Sandeep in the Indian line-up and his pairing with Raghunath bolstered the defence. Van Ass has been working on having options in penalty corners. He wants the Indian team to be able to try out more set-piece options in case both key drag-flickers are missing. He would like India to have multiple options in converting the penalty corners.

Holders Japan into Women’s World Cup last eight V

ANCOUVER : Goals in either half from Saori Ariyoshi and Mizuho Sakaguchi put holders Japan into the quarter-finals of the Women's World Cup on Tuesday with a 2-1 win over the Netherlands. Defender Ariyoshi scored her first goal for the "Nadeshiko" after 10 minutes at BC Place Stadium with midfielder Sakaguchi getting the second after 78 minutes. Kirsten Van de Ven headed in a consolation goal for the 12th-ranked two minutes into injury time. The champions overpowered the Dutch newcomers from the outset and could have been further ahead at half-time but for some sloppy finishing. Aya Sameshima missed a golden opportunity for a second goal after 22 minutes but hit over the bar from close range. Further opportunities also went astray with Shinobu Ohno firing over just before the half-time whistle. The second half also saw more misses with Sakaguchi having one of her shots blocked at 67 minutes. And Japanese goalkeeper

Netherlands' Vivianne Miedema is stopped by Japan's Azusa Iwashimizu during the final moments of a round of 16 match at the FIFA Women's World Cup on Tuesday in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Ayumi Kaihori did well to punch out a close range effort from Van De Ven after 76 minutes. But two minutes later, Sakaguchi sealed victory to put Japan through to the last eight, where they play Australia in Edmonton on Saturday for a place in the semi-final. It will be a rematch of the 2014 Asian Cup final which

Japan won 1-0 to take the title for the first time. Japan take the last quarterfinal spot in the tournament. In other last-eight fixtures, top-ranked Germany play France, ranked third, in Montreal on Friday as China take on Olympic champions United States in Ottawa while on Saturday hosts Canada clash with England at Vancouver.

Anand draws with Aronian to remain in joint second spot

STAVANGER: Former world champion Viswanathan Anand played out yet another easy draw against Levon Aronian of Armenia to remain in joint second position after the end of the seventh round of Norway chess tournament, part of the Grand Chess tour. Following the draw, Anand inched himself up to 4.5 points out of a possible seven and can now look up to his final white game in the tournament slated against lowest ranked Jon Ludvig Hammer of Norway. It turned out to be a dull day in the tournament as all the five games in the 10player round-robin ended in draws, leaving the overnight positions intact. Veselin Topalov continued to lead the tables on six points out of a possible seven, while Anand and Nakamura follow him 1.5 points behind. The only chance for Anand will be to try and win the next round against Hammer and then it would be a showdown with Topalov in the last round. Anish Giri of Holland on four points is the only other contender for a podium finish holding the fourth position solely. Fabiano Caruana of Italy, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France and Aronian share the fifth spot with three points each, a half point adrift of world champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway and Russian Alexander Grischuk. Hammer on two points is on the last spot. For Anand, the black pieces have worked well as the Indian ace has not been in any serious troubles in any of his black games here. Aronian chose the English opening and Anand countered with a popular variation that led to an easy equality. A couple of minor pieces changed hands early and although Aronian secured the Bishop pair, Anand always seemed to have enough counter play. As it turned out, the game ended rather abruptly in the early middle game with both players deciding to repeat the moves.

LIVERPOOL SIGN BRAZIL STRIKER ROBERTO FIRMINO IN £29M DEAL 32

Two offers by Manchester City for England foward Raheem Sterling resisted by Reds

L

ondon: Liverpool have signed forward Roberto Firmino from Hoffenheim on a five-year deal for a fee of about £29m. The 23-year-old's deal is subject to a medical, which will take place after he returns from Chile, where he has been playing for Brazil in the Copa America. Firmino, who has scored 47 goals in 151 games for Hoffenheim, becomes the Reds' second most expensive player. The Anfield club made Andy Carroll their record signing when he joined them for £35m from Newcastle in 2011. They also paid Southampton £25m for Adam Lallana in 2014, and have already brought in Burnley striker Danny Ings,

goalkeeper Adam Bogdan, defender Joe Gomez and midfielder James Milner this summer. The Reds have so far resisted two offers from Manchester City for England forward Raheem Sterling. Firmino, who has spent the last four and a half seasons in the Bundesliga, was on target for Brazil in their 2-1 Copa America victory over Venezuela on Sunday. In the absence of Neymar, who has been suspended for the rest of the tournament, Firmino and Philippe Coutinho, who is already a Liverpool player, are set to start again in Saturday's quarter final against Paraguay.

Gerrard reveals moment he knew Liverpool career was over

L

ondon: Steven Gerrard knew it was time to leave Liverpool when he was omitted from the starting lineup for their Champions League group match at Real Madrid last November. The 35-year-old former England captain left Anfield in May after more than 17 years and 700 matches with the Premier League club and has signed for Major League Soccer club LA Galaxy. He said in an interview to be broadcast on Wednesday that he was "devastated" when manager Brendan Rodgers put him on the

bench in Madrid and realised his days at the club were numbered. "When I was told I wasn't playing, for the sake of the team and the squad and my relationship with Brendan, I took it and accepted it," Gerrard tells his former England team mate Rio Ferdinand in the interview, to be televised by BT Sport. But the ex-Liverpool skipper said that was the moment he realised his long career at the club was coming to an end. "I sat on the bench devastated because I wanted to play. It sort of pushed me into making a decision to move on and try something different," he explained. Gerrard eventually came on in the 69th minute of the match, which Liverpool lost 1-0, and although he played 41 times last season, he was no longer the automatic firstchoice he had been for most of his 17 years at Anfield. He is now about to start the next phase of his career with the California-based LA Galaxy and can be seen on promotional posters dotted around the city under the banner 'Greatness'.
