Ganesh Utsav Mandal violates Mumbai Police norms, results in clashes between two sides, 17 held for rioting

The Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal, celebrating the festival for the 81st year, held a press briefing while unveiling the first look of the Elephant God in Lalbaug on Monday. Media persons and people from the area flocked to the venue to catch a glimpse of the Ganesh idol.

he Mumbai police has decided to strictly implement the 10pm deadline in place for loudspeakers and disc jockey systems used by various mandals during the Ganesh festival. This decision ensued because the police department feels that several mandals are violating the sound pollution norms based on orders of the Bombay High Court. The recent incident of such a violation was reported from Gaondevi locality in Vakola wherein a group of Mandal volunteers who were part of the Ganesh procession, allegedly clashed with one of the members of a certain family from the vicinity, who had urged the Mandal to lower the sound level of their loudspeak-

ers as it was adversely affecting his elderly grandmother. The incident took place at around 11 to 11.30 pm. The mandal named 'Vighneshwar Rahiwashi Sangh Ganesh Utsav Mandal' was in procession when one youth asked the DJ to reduce or stop the sound system because his grandmother was not well. Mandal's DJ Prabhakar Swami ignored the request, and in turn abused and slapped him. The other mandal volunteers also joined in the fray and assaulted the youth. Taking umbrage at this, the family members of the assaulted youth, joined in the fracas resulting in a free-for all which ensued for about 30 minutes, with both sides attacking and assailing each other with whatever they could lay their hands on, including hockey

sticks, bamboos and a host of other assault items. Assistant Police Inspector (API) Rajdutt Kamble of Vakola Police noted, “We have arrested 17 people from both sides, the quarrel erupted when family members asked Ganesh Utsav Mandal to reduce the music system volume at around 11 PM, they both clashed with each other, few got major injuries and they are recuperating in the VN Desai Hospital. On the basis of the complaint filed by Yashwant Passte of the Mandal, seven people from the family were arrested.” DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni, the spokesperson of Mumbai Police told the ADC, “We have FIR against Continued on pg 8 «

It focusses on giving good quality health services to every citizen as also on striking a balance between the number of patients and the income of a doctor By Shwetha Kannan

W

ith the state elections round the corner, the Maharashtra Universal Health Care (UHC) group has come out with a framework for the state after consulting experts from all fields and working on it for more than one year. While the framework definitely focusses on giving every citizen of the state access to good quality health services, it also makes sure that doctors too benefit by being a part of the UHC system by in-sourcing them and making them a part of a publicly managed system. One of the recommendations in the framework states that doctors who become a part of the UHC system will be given a stipulated amount of income and they will have to handle a fixed number of patients. Speaking about this point, Dr Abhay Shukla from Maharashtra UHC group said, “There will be a balance between the number of patients and the income of the doctor. With this

Dr Abhay Shukla from Maharashtra UHC group (second from left) at the meeting with noted journalist Dr P Sainath (last from left) along with other members of the group arrangement, the doctors will have financial security and also their workload will be reduced.” Dr Shukla further went on to say, “There are doctors in our state and beyond who want to practice medicine the way they were taught in their medical colleges without administering unwanted medicines and asking patients to undergo unnecessary tests, just to make money. They want to be out of the cut throat competition where the number of patients coming to them depends on the cuts they pay to the concerned person. But as an individual they can not do this and to keep their prac-

tice on, they too end up giving cuts and commissions. But this becomes stressful for them. So once the doctors become a part of the UHC system, they will be out of the competition of getting more patients to earn more money. They will be given a good fixed income and also be given a certain population to take care of. This way there will be no mad rush to earn money and the practice of subjecting people to unnecessary tests will also be curbed.” “We have spoken to 60 doctors from Maharashtra who have shared the experiences of their struggles to set up practice and have

spoken about the need to have an organised set up for doctors who want to practice medicine as a noble profession with peace of mind. The UHC system will be a great platform for such doctors as well for small doctors who are struggling to have a practice and young pass outs,” he added. Maharashtra UHC is planning to have a meeting with doctors to share and promote this idea in their fraternity. The other aspects in the policy draft are about the need for appropriate allocation of funds and manpower to make UHC work in the state. Also, the need for political will to make UHC a reality was emphasised upon. Noted journalist Dr P Sainath who was also present at the discussion said, “Universalisation is a must for all essential social services. Its basis is embodied in the Indian constitution. Providing healthcare is the primary duty of the state. Maharashtra today presents a paradox of high growth rate and per capita income along with considerable health resources but yet a majority of the population, urban as well as rural, is not able to access basic healthcare facilities because of the nature of the healthcare system. The solution to this problem is developing a UHC system with access to cashless health care for all, based on strengthened public system and insourced, regulated private providers in a publicly managed system.”

Who deserves the Bharat Ratna?

WHO is fit enough to be awarded the Bharat Ratna? How does one conclude a man or woman deserves it? Some say politicians must not get the award. Only those who made sacrifices must be considered for the award. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose is admired and a large number of people say he deserves the award. He had different views from those of Mahatma Gandhi. He did not believe in non-violence as a means to get rid of the British rule. He thought joining an enemy of the British was the right thing to do: He held out the view that India should associate itself with the Nazis who were fighting almost all of Europe. Both Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel did not like

Kanshiram

He ‘reinvented’ the Mahatma

Calling him an 'inspirational director' and 'wonderful human being', several Bollywood celebrities including Anupam Kher, Anil Kapoor and Shekhar Kapur mourned the death of Oscar-winning filmmamker Richard Lord Richard Attenborough. Attenborough, R.I.P. The British actordirector, who struggled for 20 years to bring the life of Mahatma Gandhi on-screen in the 1982 film, died after prolonged illness, just four days before his 91st birthday. Actor-director Anupam Kher said he met Attenborough during the casting of 'Gandhi'. "Had the honour of meeting Sir Richard Attenborough during the casting of 'Gandhi'. He was a wonderful human," Kher tweeted. Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur worked with Attenborough in his 1998 movie 'Elizabeth' and remembered him saying, "Beautiful memories of Richard Attenborough as Lord Cecil in 'Elizabeth'. Amazing director. Amazing actor to work with. Amazing human being." Lord Attenborough won an Academy Award for best director for 'Gandhi', one of many highlights of a distinguished career that spanned six decades.

like him much. They would have liked that Mahatma Gandhi drop him. Then Subhash Chandra Bose disappeared. He went out of India. He formed a freedom army. Finally, there was news that he had died in a plane crash. According to yet another story, he lived in India itself -- in disguise. The Congress party never thought that this patriot who joined the Nazis should get the Ratna award. Another name was Bhagat Singh -the heroic martyr who sacrificed his life. He was not afraid of death. He was a great inspiration to the youth. The BJP government will have a difficult time picking up proposals of names for the Bharat Ratna. Almost a dozen have already come.

And Bahujan Samaj Party leader UP's Mayawati has also suggested someone for the great honour -Kanshiram. He was a 'chhota' politician, not known outside Uttar Pradesh and yet she says he deserves Bharat Ratna. Besides, she has perpetrated his memory in a concrete way: She has built statues of him -- many of them. Kanshiram was Mayawati's mentor, friend and guide. He was a party leader. And the party has been now decimated in the state. Mayawati has made statues of Kanshiram, elephant (her party's election symbol) and herself -dozens of them. According to us, the only man who deserves the Bharat Ratna is Mahatma Gandhi.

A

cylinder blast in a tenement killed one and injured 17 people on Monday morning in Chembur. The incident took place at around 6.45 am at Sahdeep Colony when a cooking gas cylinder at a house blasted due to leakage emitting from the knob. Five houses around the blast area were shattered due to the impact. According to the Tilak Nagar police, there was a leakage in the gas cylinder at the house of the Jagtaps since Sunday night. The occupants didn't smell it in time. Around 6 am, neighbours raised an alarm after they smelt the gas. They checked with each other, but were not able to locate the house. Initial reports suggest that the gas had engulfed the house where the Jagtaps resided. They woke up at around 6.40 am and tried to switch on the lights. As the gas was present in the switch board, a spark led to the blast. The doors and windows of the house were shut which didn't allow the gas to escape. The house fell apart due to the impact of the blast. People in the neighbouring houses suffered injuries due to the wall collapse. The blast took place at the house of Ma-

MU’s lady security guard beaten up

Film-maker Morani targeted The film-maker had reportedly failed to produce actor Shahrukh Khan for an event, which he was supposed to do under instructions from gangster Ravi Pujari By Neel Shah

F

ilm producer Karim Morani has been allegedly targeted for not fulfilling gangster Ravi Pujari's request of organising a stage show in the US. Interestingly, the gangster wanted Morani to arrange actor Shahrukh Khan, apart from other Bollywood personalities, for the event, highly placed sources in the city's crime branch said. Last Saturday at 10.32 pm, three bike-borne people fired three rounds randomly outside the bungalow of Morani in Juhu area of the western suburbs. The latter an accused in the 2G scam, is a well-known film producer, who is also famous for organising high-profile stage shows as well as events in and outside the country. According to the Juhu police, for the last few days, Morani had been receiving threat calls from Pujari demanding extortion. However, reliable sources in the crime branch, which is also probing the firing case, in-

formed that the reluctance of Morani to organise the show led to firing outside his bungalow – 'Shagun'. The profits earned from the event were to be distributed equally between Pujari and Morani, a condition that the gangster had kept, said the police. “The technique of firing outside an office, house or around the target is the usual technique of Pujari to petrify the target and thus a message was sent that if he does not supplicate to his demand then in the next attempt he might be killed by his shooters, said sources in the crime branch. Meanwhile, an FIR was registered on Monday, a day after the Pujari gang's act. Local police as well as the crime branch are searching for the accused and till the time of going to press, the investigators were not able to establish the identity of the three shooters. For this, the police were looking for any CCTV cameras, in which the shooters might have got captured while fleeing from the spot.

A

n argument erupted between the security guards of Hindi University and Mumbai University (MU) over the spilling of garbage in the Hindi University campus. Both the Hindi University as well as the MU guards have been deployed by the same security agency of the Mumbai University. For the last few months, the Hindi University has brought in private security bouncers and have placed them along with the MU security guards at the Hindi University campus at Marine Lines. The incident took place when the private security bouncers inquired with the MU security guards about the garbage spilling in the campus. It led to a heated conversation between the two guards after which MU's female security guards complained about the issue to the Hindi University officials who called in the private security bouncers. After another argument, the female security guard of the MU slapped the male private security bouncers who then started beating the women guard.

Now Sadabhau Khot threatens to quit Mahayuti By Prashant Hamine

C

lose on the heels of Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatna (SSS) leader and MP Raju Shetty venting his displeasure over deserters from ruling Congress-NCP alliance into Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena, yesterday Swabhimani Sanghatna (SS) leader Sadabhau Khot followed the footsteps of his Mahayuti alliance partner.

The Republican Party of India (Athawale) faction, led by MP Ramdas Athawale, has staked claim to 13 Assembly seats. Just last week, senior Sena Member of Legislative Council Ramdas Kadam had warned other Mahayuti allies that seats will be allocated based on their respective strength and candidates. He had also advised the impatient allies that they were free to

In a terse warning to the dominant alliance partners, BJP and Sena, Khot stated that the SS will not accept anything less than 12 Assembly seats allocated to it, in the seatsharing agreement. Commenting on the CongressNCP deserters joining the BJP-Sena, he further remarked that some “corrupt” people have started entering the Mahayuti. Only last week, SSS leader and MP Raju Shetty had expressed his displeasure over the former Nationalist Congress Party Leader from Kolhapur region, Sanjay Ghatge, from joining the Sena. Ghatge is believed to be anti-Raju Shetty and both hail from the same area. Shetty, too, has staked claim to 38 Assembly seats.

leave the alliance. Speaking to newspersons in Pune, state BJP president Devendra Fadnavis tried to calm things down by stating that the concerns of the Mahayuti allies will be addressed. He added that the first list of candidates will be declared in the first week of September. Khot, on the other hand, remarked that, following the untimely demise of late BJP leader Gopinath Munde, there is no uniformity in the statements from the BJP-Sena leadership. Yesterday, Shiv Sangram leader and rebel NCP MLC Vinayak Mete too called on Sena president Uddhav Thackeray at his Matoshri residence in Bandra over the seat-sharing talks.

espite being shunted out from the elite Mumbai Crime Branch and the Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) due to his misconduct, a number of times, to the Motor Transport (MT) unit, Alhad Gaikwad has somehow managed to officially return back to the premier agencies every time. In addition, he has managed to come back to these elite agencies each time, even after levelling allegations of corruption, which have often been proved false, against his own bosses. More recently, Gaikwad and other police officers were in the news for threatening and extorting Rs 1.6 lakh from Kalpesh Shah, a wellknown diamond merchant in the city's Western suburbs, who had been duped by pro-

fessional conmen. Gaikwad took the money from the merchant and assured him that his diamonds would be recovered, as he shares a good rapport with several ACPs and other top-ranking officers in the crime branch. Gaikwad and other officers are now facing an inquiry under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) (Zone IX) Satyanarayan Chaudhary.

Allegations and transfers In 2003, when Gaikwad was working in the Mumbai Crime Branch Unit 11, located in Kandivali, he was asked by the then DCP to report to the MT headquarters in Nagpada. To prevent his transfer from Unit 11, Gaikwad had accused an MT inspector, Achrekar, of demanding money to prevent his transfer from the

The Motor Transport (MT) Unit was established in 1948 to cater to the mobility needs of the Maharashtra Police. The city police's headquarters of MT department is located in Nagpada, South Mumbai. Constables are usually provided as drivers to the elite wings of the city and state's police forces. Presently, the State Police has 7,871 land vehicles, 5 speed boats and 6 other boats. Alhad Gaikwad crime branch. But this step did not stall his transfer back to MT department. After Satyapal Singh took charge as Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Gaikwad was back in the crime branch. In 2009, Gaikwad started working in Unit 11 on the recommendation of Firoze Patel who was then in charge of the unit. As soon as Patel's term ended in 2011, and Inspector Rabhunath Dalvi took over the unit, Gaikwad accused him of taking money from cricket bookies. An inquiry proved that this allegation was false and Gaikwad was transferred back to the MT. Soon, Gaikwad was back in action. This time he was

he ruling alliance partners – Congress and NCP – are still struggling to reach any amicable solution over the contentious issue of seat sharing for the forthcoming Assembly elections scheduled in October. The duo have miserably failed to arrived at a formula on division of seats even after two meetings between top leaders on both sides. Both Congress and NCP are adamant on their stance and are in no mood to relent despite facing tough election in the state where the rival saf-

fron alliance is a hot favourite. However, even after the meeting between central leaders, the deadlock continues. As the announcement of Assembly elections are expected within a couple of days, this impasse has created uneasiness among the workers of both the sides.Significantly, the uncertainty over the future continues despite NCP chief Sharad Pawar having announced that the allies would contest together. The sticking point is Pawar's wish that NCP and Congress divide the 288 seats of state Assembly equally. The NCP had con-

working for the Juhu unit of the ATS. As old habits die hard, in 2012, he accused another inspector, Mahesh Desai, who was heading the ATS unit at the time, of corruption. These allegations proved wrong and based on a misconduct report against Gaikwad, he was shunted out of the ATS. It wasn't long before Gaikwad was working in Unit 8 and in the subsequent year, in 2013, he levelled allegations of corruption against the senior inspector of the unit, Deepak Pathangare. After an adverse report against Gaikwad was submitted to the superiors of the branch, Gaikwad was transferred back to the MT unit. Staying with the unit, this time Gaikwad managed to get a stint as the driver for DCP (Detection) Ambadas Pote. Gaikwad's rapport with DCP Pote goes back to 1998, when Pote was heading the Kandivali unit of the crime branch which was then called Unit 10. It was later changed to Unit 11, as it is known now. After Pote retired in April this year and surrendered his official vehicle, Gaikwad had to go back to the MT department. But within days, he was posted as the driver of Assistant Commissioner of Police (North) Sunil Deshmukh, which is his current position. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

tested just 114 seats in 2009, with the rest going to Congress. Now the party is insisting for an equal number of seats. The confidence of the junior ally stems from the Lok Sabha elections in which the Congress could win only two seats of the 48, while the NCP won four and overtook the senior partner.According to sources, the differences are serious and the earlier announcement that the alliance would pull together should not be taken as the settlement of all differences. For NCP, at the heart of the conflict is Chief Minister Prithviraj Cha-

van. The Congressmen, however, are confident that the differences would be resolved. The sources further said that all is not well in the alliance that has its back to the wall in the face of the saffron wave. The two partners should have secured better coordination among the workers by now so that fears of sabotage could be minimised. It would have helped in securing the best results in adverse political circumstances. The ongoing bargaining close to the polls will only make things worse for both the parties.

Kirit Somaiya jumping to his defense arguing that the ruling CongressNCP state government was targeting Somaiya for his anticorruption crusade against some Congress-NCP ministers. Terming the case as hypothetical, Shelar stated that the party will fight the case legally as well as on political front. Somaiya, who did not speak to newspersons on the issue, however did demand a special audit from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) in the Mumbai Metro One Pvt

Ltd (MMOPL) Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar (VAG) project. He wanted to know as to how a project that was to cost Rs 2,360 crore finally now costs Rs 4,321 crore. The BJP MP alleged that the state government had on October 1 last year written to the Union Urban Development ministry to notify the VAG alignment under the Central Metro Railway (amendment) Act, 2009 instead of the Tramways Act, 1886. He said that by doing so the MMOPL was allowed to fix the metro fares of Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 30 and Rs 40 instead of the agreed price of Rs 9, Rs 11 and Rs 13 under the Tramways Act. The BJP MP disclosed that he was ready to file a complaint with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for what he called blatant cheating of the people by the state government. Commenting upon the KBCL Chit Fund scam, he said that the state government has not approached the CBI in connection with detention of one Bhausaheb Chavan who is absconding now.

The Kashmir conundrum: Hurriyat needs to introspect

Ponder awhile... “Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.” — Albert Einstein

No alternative to peace talks AKISTAN is boasting that today P it is no longer the same kind of country it was years ago and that any aggressive action by India would be met with effectively. It says, its defence system has enormously improved and in the event of a war, it can give a crushing blow to India. And it also reminds India that it has nuclear weapons and a few missiles with nuclear warheads which can destroy India and kill millions of people. With this kind of perception, it is no wonder perhaps that Pakistan resorts to provocative acts. Its firing along the Line of Control (LoC) indicates the confidence it has acquired during the last few years. It is constantly challenging India and telling it that its patience with regard to the Kashmir issue is exhausted. It keeps calling India for peace talks — from a position of strength. Its army chief has declared Pakistan is ready for any eventuality. How must we react to provocations and challenges by Pakistan? Some of our leaders, particularly of the BJP, are in favour of an equally strong response. As a wise and responsible nation, however, our policy cannot be the same as Pakistan. We have to face the reality that there can be no war between two nuclear countries. If there is war, there will be nothing like the victorious or vanquished. The only way out, when we find ourselves in such a grave situation, is continuing peace talks.

RTICLE 370 is not meant to reflect the liberal tilt in the Indian Constitution. It is specific. It gives a special status to the state of Jammu & Kashmir — a status which the people of Jammu & Kashmir won after waging a long, tough fight for freedom both from the British and the Maharaja ruling the state. Sheikh Abdullah was in the lead and achieved what looked impossible at one time, an autonomous status within the sovereign, secular Republic of India. Except three subjects — Defence, Foreign Affairs and Communications — the Indian Parliament had no power to legislate without the consent of the state legislature. The state could have merged with Pakistan, but preferred to integrate with secular India because the entire struggle by the Kashmiris was secular.

ever, is to be blamed because he knew that the Narendra Modi government had discontinued such practices. In his case, New Delhi made a request not to meet the Hurriyat leaders. Despite the majority in India being opposed to the 'cozy relationship', the Pakistan High Commissioner went ahead with the meeting. He should have anticipated the anger sweeping through India. Apart from some sort of bravado, there was nothing positive about the meeting. New Delhi’s policy on Kashmir is to monopolize power and dilute the special status of Kashmir. Sheikh Abdullah had kept the issue alive

Separate constitution The undertakings given at that time are sacred and cannot be written off by the people who are of different thinking. The state had adopted even a separate constitution passed to make it clear the state would not compromise on its autonomy. Watering it down now will amount to betrayal of the confidence which the people of Jammu & Kashmir had reposed in New Delhi. If any change had to be made, it has to be done by them. The Indian Union which the state had joined cannot amend its powers without the consent of the state people. To give more subjects to Delhi is the prerogative of Srinagar. Sheikh Abdullah joined the Union on that understanding. Some elements trying to undo the understanding accorded to the state people are neither serving the cause of India, nor that of the state. In fact, most of what is happening in Kashmir is irrelevant and confusing. Take the meeting of some Hurriyat leaders with the Pakistan High Commissioner Basit Ali in New Delhi. Such meetings had taken place in the past too. The Indian government did not raise any objection to them then because they were taken as exercises to exchange views from the sidelines. Shabbir Shah was only following a practice of several other Kashmiri leaders. To be charitable to him, one can say that he met the Pakistan High Commissioner as he or some other leaders would have done in the past, without a furore. The Pakistan High Commissioner, how-

BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar with some authoritarian thinking. When he challenged New Delhi, he was detained in a special jail at a faraway Tamil Nadu for 12 years. No doubt, Jawaharlal Nehru tried to rub off the stigma of being power crazy and put up the Sheikh at his house after the detention. But history judged Nehru as a ruthless ruler who did not spare even his intimate friends. The same thinking prevails when those who want independence are called separatists. They are wrong in projecting a demand which has acquired a fundamentalist edge. In the bargain, the secular Sheikh’s contribution has been forgotten. No doubt, the Hurriyat is a divided house. Some, led by Syed Shah Geelani, want the state to ‘join’ Pakistan. And the others, led by Yasin Malik, demand 'azaadi'. Then there are those who are confused. Not long ago, when most Kashmiris, alienated from India as they are, favoured the integration with Pakistan, the Kashmiris would have voted for Pakistan if there had been a plebiscite. Today, a preponderant majority of Kashmiris, want 'azaadi'. Yasin Malik has been able to veer

person may follow a religion and yet not come to the realization of truth. But of what use is his religion to him if he is not happy? The spirit of religion should give happiness. God is happy. He is the perfection of love, harmony, and beauty. A religious person should be happier than one who is not religious. If a person who professes religion is always melancholy his religion is disgraced. The form has been kept, but the spirit lost. If the study of religion and mysticism does not lead to real joy and happiness, it may just as well not exist, for then it does not help to fulfill the purpose of life. The world today is sad and suffering as the result of terrible wars. The religion which answers the demand of life today is one which invigorates and gives life to souls, which illuminates the heart of man with the divine light which is already there. Not necessarily by any outer form, though for some a form may be helpful, but by showing that happiness which is the desire of every soul. As for the question of how this method of

alchemy is practiced, the whole process was explained by the alchemists in a symbolic way. They said gold is made out of mercury. The nature of mercury is to be ever-moving, but by a certain process the mercury is first stilled, and once stilled it becomes silver; then the silver has to be melted, and the juice of a

MATTER & SPIRIT herb is poured on to the molten silver which is thereby turned into gold. Many childlike souls have tried to make gold by stilling mercury and melting silver, and they have tried to find the herb; but they were deluded, and they had better have worked and earned money. The real interpretation of this process is that mercury represents the nature of the ever-restless mind. The mind becomes more restless when one desires to control it; it is like mercury, constantly moving. When by a method of concentration one has mastered the mind, one has taken the first

them round from being pro-Pakistan elements to making them accept the demand for an independent, sovereign state. Yet what the Hurriyat does not realize is that 'azaadi' is an ideal, not a feasible proposition. When the British left India in August 1947, they gave the princely states an option to stay independently and they did not want to join either India or Pakistan. Maharaja Hari Singh, the then Jammu & Kashmir ruler, declared that he would stay independent. The land-locked state had to have the support of both India and Pakistan for access to the outside world. He did not want to depend on one. With the Muslims in a majority in J&K, Pakistan expected its accession. When it did not take place, Pakistan sent its irregulars, backed by the regular troops. The Maharaja sought the help of India which insisted on the accession before sending its troops. He had to sign the Instrument of Accession Act. The task of the Hurriyat is more difficult than that of the Maharaja. The two parts of the states are against 'azaadi'. Jammu, the Hindu majority part, would like to join India. The Buddhist majority Ladakh, the other part, want to be a union territory of India. Therefore the demand for 'azaadi' is essentially that of the Valley which has nearly 98 per cent of Muslims.

Another partition? When India is in the midst of endeavour for polarization and when the ruling political party is playing a Hindu card, it is difficult to imagine that the Congress or any other political party, including the Communists, would support the Hurriyat. Even otherwise, all political parties are opposed to the demand for independence, although some may go to the farthest in giving powers to the state. After 67 years of partition, the wounds inflicted because of the division have not healed yet. How does the Hurriyat expect the people in India to reconcile to another partition, however genuine and strong are the sentiments of the Kashmiris? If partition is again on the basis of religion, the secular state may not survive as it is. True, the 15crore Muslims in India are equal citizens and they cannot be treated as hostages. But the Valley’s secession may have such repercussions which are dreadful to imagine. The Hurriyat has to introspect and change its tactics. It has to prove that it counts. step in the accomplishment of a sacred task. Prayer is concentration, reading is concentration, sitting and relaxing and thinking on one subject are all concentration. All artists, thinkers, and inventors have practiced concentration in some form. The secret of this is to be learnt in the science of breath. Breath is the essence of life and the mind may be controlled by a knowledge of the proper method of breathing. For this, instruction from a teacher is a necessity. For since the mystical cult of the East has become known in the West, books have been published, and teaching which had been kept as sacred as religion has been discussed in words. But these can never truly explain the mystery. People read these books and begin to play with breath, and often instead of benefiting they injure both mind and body. There are also those who make a business of teaching breathing exercises for money, thus degrading a sacred thing. The science of breath is the greatest mystery there is, and for thousands of years it has been kept as a sacred trust in the schools of the mystics. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

INFERTILITY – A RISING CONCERN Dr Anagha Karkhanis

F

rom mountain trails, to cities and towns that specialise in Ayurvedic treatments and massages, Indian travel destinations have a lot to offer when it comes to healthy vacations. In this article, we tell you about some cities and towns in India that promise a healthy break, and also tell you where to head if you want to experience the thrill of adventure sports and give your body a great workout.

>> Chennakesava is one the several temples in Chennai that you can visit

Hassan may not be the first city you think of on a visit to Karnataka, but you should. The city is amongst the top three on a list of the least polluted cities in the country. While the weather there is similar to that in Bangalore, the air is much cleaner. What to do: When you’re in Hassan, you’re going to be surrounded by beautiful temples, religious structures and ancient architecture. If you visit during October, you can visit the Hasanamba Temple, which is open to pilgrims once a year. While you won’t be able to watch a film or do much shopping in Hassan, you should get into adventure mode when you’re here. You can swim in the river, or go kayaking and rafting at the Tungabhadra River, which is relatively clean. You can also trek at the islands near the city.

>> Kollam promises coastal surroundings and a peaceful getaway

Also one of the three least polluted cities of the country, visiting Kollam will ensure a healthy getaway. Formerly called Quilon, kollam is located in Kerala, and is an old seaport city that has refreshing coastal air and is not overpopulated. What to do: This is one of our favourite destinations on the list, because there’s just so much to do here. The city is home to the Santhigiri Ayurvedic centre, where you can stay (for 500 a night) and come away relaxed and rejuvenated. There’s also Munroe Island, where you can take a canoe ride. Visit the Palaruvi Falls for a quick trek and walk around St. Thomas Fort. Explore the museums and temples on foot to get a little activity into your day and then relax on the beaches, specially Kollam and Thirumullavaram. Continued on pg 14

ne of the best parts of life is traveling through it with friends. You may attend school and college together; enter adulthood and start your first jobs at the same time, then embrace commitments and responsibilities that may mean marriage and children. Infertility is often a divergent path for some friendships. Understanding infertility issues is the best way to overcome possible obstacles in conceiving. An estimated 10-15% of Indian couples have trouble conceiving. Earlier many couples just accepted they could not have children and did not consult a fertility specialist or waited too long to do so. However now we see this trend changing. The number of couples seeking medical help to have a family has risen dramatically. Ideally, a couple should seek help if they don’t conceive after a year of regular, well-timed intercourse. This should be earlier if the woman is over 35 years of age. Fertility declines and the risk of miscarriage increases as age advances. A woman has about 1 lac eggs as she enters the 30s and this number crashes to as low as 2,000 after the age of 40. It is not just about the quantity, the quality of eggs also deteriorates with age. We are now observing a rapid decline in egg reserve due to earlier ovarian ageing than ever before. This would mean that a woman of 30 might have ovarian function of a 40 year old. Hence biological age is more important than chronological age in deciding the apt fertility treatment. Of course, not all fertility problems are age-related. We are seeing increasing number of younger women with polycystic ovary syndrome, a hormonal disorder. At Cocoon Fertility a primary check is done on the ovarian function by simple hormonal tests and sonography that makes the starting point of any fertility treatment. Many times the ovaries require only a small push to produce eggs that can be achieved using ovulation induction medication. Sometimes women spend too long taking fertility drugs. Once the right dose has been determined, women should generally not stay on fertility drugs for more than 6 months. If pregnancy has not been achieved by then it is time to re-evaluate the situation and proceed accordingly. The egg from the ovary travels through the fallopian tubes where it gets fertilized by a sperm. If fallopian tubes are blocked or damaged, it becomes difficult to conceive naturally or with medication. Pregnancy can then be successfully achieved through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Hence an initial check for the patency of fallopian tubes is done, thus saving further months and years of futile medications, monetary losses and of course ovarian ageing! Somehow infertility is often thought of as a female issue. Yet it takes two to make a baby, and people have to realize that problems

in the man are just as likely to be, as those in the woman. It is therefore important that both the partners visit the clinic together. The simplest way to find out male factor infertility is to do a semen analysis. It can be affected in smokers, infection, testicular surgery, trauma, cancer and undescended testes. For straightforward issues with ovulation and sperm counts intrauterine insemination (IUI) is performed, where washed and prepared sperms are directly injected into the womb. However if there are complex factors causing infertility, then advanced treatments like In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) or Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) are required. In IVF, the ovaries are stimulated to produce eggs that are suctioned out. The eggs are then mixed with the partner’s sperms in a culture dish and incubated together in closely controlled laboratory conditions. This results in formation of multiple embryos. Cocoon Fertility center follows the European norm of transferring one or two embryos of the best quality into the womb on day 3 or 5 for implantation. The remaining embryos are frozen in liquid nitrogen for future transfers. Yesterday’s 20s are todays 30s and yesterday’s 30s are today’s 40s. There has been a recent trend towards postponing parenthood due to job pressures, educational aspirations and financial insecurities. However ageing is inevitable and the body’s biological clock is not going to wait till you have achieved your desired career goals or degrees or till you have met your Mr. Right. What’s more, egg quantity and quality declines so precipitously in the late 30s and early 40s that after the age or 42-43, the woman might need eggs donated by a younger woman. The bad news is that you cannot make the eggs younger but the good news is that at Cocoon a new flash-freezing technology known as vitrification is used to store not only embryos but also eggs; so that women can have their own bank of eggs saved if they are considering not having a family until their late 30s. These frozen embryos and eggs can be thawed later for use in IVF. Apart from social reasons, vitrification can be the only hope in patients undergoing cancer treatment in the form of chemotherapy; radiotherapy or certain surgery that can adversely affect fertility in women as well as men. However, when they take the informed decision to freeze embryos or eggs and sperms for future use, these problems can be avoided. Cocoon Fertility has a special facility dedicated for the same. Cocoon Fertility laboratory has been designed with the latest equipment and modern technology of Class 100 / Grade A air purity (EU-GMP) working/operational area for IVF & ICSI and overall a Class 1000 Certified Lab where the procedures take place with separate areas for IUI, Egg Collection and Embryo Transfer. This state of the art lab helps to achieve the highest success rates in couples seeking first time treatments and to bring a happy outcome after years of heartbreak for those who have unfortunately had previous failures in IVF treatment.

>> Chennai is one of the least polluted cities in India

CHENNAI Chennai is not the healthiest city, but amongst all the major cities, it ranks as the least polluted. It is a part of the top ten healthiest destinations to visit in India and is home to great art and culture, which means that you can walk around the capital of Tamil Nadu to see the sights and sounds. It’s also slightly cleaner than most of the other major cities in the country. What to do: When you’re in Chennai, don’t miss out on visiting Fort St. George. It’s a great place to walk around. Also visit Marina and Breezy beach and then head to Covelong, a small fishing village where you can relax by the sea. Chennai is not packed on activities, but it’s a great place to get a little peace of mind. You can also visit the Nanmangalam Reserve Forest, where walks are organised through the year. The Pondy Bazaar is a good place to shop, because it’s a large area to walk through. The city is home to several national parks and gardens, including the Guindy National Park and Pallikaranai Marsh, as well as the backwaters, where you can relax among natural surroundings.

BEST ADVENTUrE SPorTS SPoTS IN THE CoUNTrY From skiing to rock climbing, adventure sports are one of the best ways to have a memorable and active vacation. While most places on our list offer some kind of adventure activity, if you really want a rush of adrenalin, add these places to your travel bucket list: Skiing in Kashmir: Ever wanted to ski? You don’t have to visit an international destination, just visit Jammu & Kashmir between December and March, which is when the region is covered in snow. Kashmir offers a range of snow sports such as skiing, snowboarding and ice-skating. Mountaineering in Uttrakhand: Mountain climbing is one of the most physically demanding activities, but it is extremely thrilling. The hilly terrain of Garhwal and Kumon in Uttrakhand is home to the best places for mountaineering in India. Scuba Diving in Andaman: We’re sure that you already know about this, but just in case you were wondering where you can get up close and personal with

underwater flora and fauna, it is at the scenic islands of Andaman. Havelock Island in Andaman is popular the world over for its virgin beaches and great scuba diving opportunities.

Take a look at some of the healthiest dishes from various cuisines across the country: Sambhar: Sambhar is made with chickpeas and a variety of vegetables, so it’s hardly surprising that this preparation is rich in proteins and vitamins. The dish is available all over India, but the tastiest version can be found at south Indian tourist hot-spots.

PALAkkAD Ayurvedic massages are one of the many things that Kerala is known for, and Palakkad is the place to go to if you want your vacation to include these deeply relaxing and healing treatments. Palakkad lies at the foot of the Western Ghats and is home to several resorts, as well as standalone centres that offer these treatments. However, you must remember that the massages are aimed at healing, more than relaxing you. So, don’t expect luxurious interiors, or 5-star services. But, what you can look forward to are consultations with Ayurvedic doctors, who will prescribe massages as well as lifestyle changes that can tackle ailments ranging from obesity and eye problems, to stress and even cancer. What to do: Palakkad is an excellent place for outdoor excursions. The Silent Valley National Park is a popular attraction, and is home to several endangered animals, making it a great place to visit if you’d like to go on a walk surrounded by lush greenery. If you want to soak in some culture, hike to Attapady, a tribal hamlet that is nestled deep in the forest. You can also go on a three-hour trek to Dhoni Hills, which has several beautiful streams and waterfalls.

Idli: Another south Indian speciality, idlis are a simple and nutritious breakfast option. They contain rice and chickpeas, which are fermented and steamed, making them a safe and healthy option for when you’re on vacation.

Dhokla: A Gujarati speciality, this savoury cake makes for a healthy snack. The preparation is similar to that of an idli and uses fermented dal, which is then baked or steamed to produce this fluffy delicacy. It’s low in calories and high in proteins and fibre.

Rock climbing in Madhya Pradesh: Ever wanted to be like Tom Cruise at the beginning of Mission Impossible II, where he climbs rocks to reach the summit of a hill, in the middle of a dessertlike terrain? If you do, then you should visit Madhya Pradesh. The Satpura mountain range located in this state offers great opportunities for rock climbing, river rappelling and trekking. >> Palakkad offers a range of Ayurvedic treatments and massages

>> Coorg has beautiful waterfalls, which you can hike to during monsoon

HEALTHIEST DISHES IN INDIA

Coorg A four-hour drive away from the city of Bangalore, Coorg is a great place to go if you’re looking for tranquillity and relaxation. The hill station has several resorts that arrange hiking tours to keep you active while you’re on vacation. Coorg is also known for the Jiva Grande Spa at Vivanta by Taj. The spa has often been on lists of the healthiest retreats in the world and offers ancient Indian Ayurvedic treatments that promise to clear your body of toxins and help improve your overall health. The treatments include yoga, meditation and traditional healing therapies. What to do: As we mentioned earlier, Coorg is a great place to go on a hike or trek. The Pushpagiri Hill, Brahmagiri Hill and Virajpet are some of the most popular trekking spots. The varied terrain offers hikes of different levels of difficulty, which allows you to choose one that is perfect for you. Coorg is also famous for river rafting and its waterfalls, all of which are a visual treat, especially during monsoon.

Daliya: Daliya is a type of a cereal that is extremely rich in fibre. In certain parts of central and northern India, it is mixed with milk and served for breakfast. Daliya, which is essentially broken wheat, is also used to prepare the traditional Gujarati and Maharashtrian sweet dish, Laapsi. Palak ki subzi: We’re sure you are aware of the benefits of including green vegetables in your diet, which is why this dish, made using spinach, is extremely healthy. In northern India, you’re likely to find it made with dal, while in central and eastern India, it is usually prepared with potatoes.

>> Switch to oils such as olive oil to reduce your consumption of saturated fats

Know your foods Take a look at which foods contain saturated and unsaturated fats to plan your meals accordingly. saturated fats: Butter, milk, cheese, coconut oil, meats, fried food, processed food, packaged sauces, peanuts, margarine. unsaturated fat: Avocados, olive oil, sunflower oil, flax seeds, walnuts, nuts, olives.

Saturated and unsaturated fats are terms that are thrown around a lot when it comes to healthy living. However, not many people know the real difference between the two. Shirley Mistry tells you what each type is and which foods contain them

B

efore we start discussing which type of fat is better, let’s set one thing straight — you may want to lose weight and keep yourself in good shape, but your body needs fat. A certain amount of fat is essential to promote growth, ensure healthy metabolism and give you energy. In fact, certain vitamins such as vitamin E, A and D are only fat-soluble, meaning that they require fat in order to be effective ly absorbed by your body. However, saturated fats and unsaturated fats are two major categories — one of them leads to poor health while the other is full of health benefits. Take a look at the differences so that you can make informed food choices.

the BasiC differenCes Saturated fats are packed with hydrogen atoms and are devoid of any double bonds between the carbon atoms. On the other hand, unsaturated fats contain at least one double bond between carbon atoms. Since to most people, the difference in their chemical structure is of little or no significance, let’s skip ahead to how they actually impact your health. At the most basic level, saturated fats, when consumed in excess quantities, can raise LDL (bad) cholesterol, clog your arteries and increase your risk of cardiovascular diseases such a s heart attacks and/ or strokes. Unsaturated fats, on the other hand, are better for your health, as they promote HDL (good) cholesterol and aid in moving LDL cholesterol to your liver where it can be processed. They also contain omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which have extensive health benefits.

texture & shelf life At room temperature, saturated fats are solid, whereas unsaturated fats are liquid and tend to solidify only once the temperature drops. Also, saturated fats have a long shelf life, when compared to unsaturated fats that are known to spoil quickly.

reCommended Consumption It is advisable that you restrict your intake of fat to a minimal percentage of your daily calorie requirement. With saturated fats, you shouldn’t have more than 10% of your daily calorie intake, while with unsaturated fats you shouldn’t consume a quantity that is greater than 30% of your daily calorie requirements.

Be social Those who have low EI are very often the same people who avoid situations/ events that require too much social contact. Being able to be attune yourself with other people in social situations, building long-lasting relationships and connecting with people is very important for your life and career. Cultivate humility and try and understand the emotions of the people that you are communicating with, in order to build on your EI.

2

Be aware You should always be aware of your own emotions. This will help you figure out when to express yourself and when to keep your emotion under wraps. This not only helps in the way you deal with people around you, it also helps you figure out how you really feel. It’s important to ponder over things more carefully if you can’t tell immediately, instead of brushing things under the rug and avoiding your feelings.

take it easy Don’t be quick to dismiss your feelings. Make it a point to let your emotions peak without brushing them aside, whether it’s emotions about people, things or situations. If you’re constantly suppressing emotions, you’re stunting your own emotional growth, which is not good for you.

3

4

listen to yourself... Not when your brain tells you to dismiss any emotions you have, but when your body is trying to tell you how you are feeling. Feelings of stress, anger, love and hate all manifest themselves into physical symptoms such as a heaviness in your chest, headaches, flutter of your heart, or a knot in your stomach. Learn to watch out for these signs and distinguish between them in order to keep your EI high.

6

ask for help Sometimes, people can help you determine what you’re feeling better than you can yourself. Don’t shy away from asking for help. People who are close to you will be able to explain and help you to emote better than you would be able to yourself, especially if your EI is very low.

« quick quiz: Are you eAting enough vegetAbles?

8

connect the dots Find connections between the way you feel. Note down things as they happen if you can’t keep track. For example, if you don’t know what you’re feeling at a particular moment, instead of dismissing it and moving on, try and think of the last time that you felt the same way and address the issue instead of ignoring it. It will make you mentally healthier than bottling up your feelings will.

Are you always tired or fatigued? a. Yes. b. No. Do you suffer from short breath every time you climb up a flight of stairs? a. Yes. b. No.

think in three shades Stop thinking in black and white. People with low EI rarely think of all the shades of grey in between, making it difficult for them to evaluate and solve problems effectively. Make it a point to think of every possible side of a problem, before jumping to a conclusion.

tune in Sure, it’s hard to be aware of how you feel all the time. But, it’s easy to do so if you make it a habit. Carry a small notebook with you at all times and jot everything down — a strange feeling in your stomach, a crazy dream you had the night before, the place your thoughts roam to when you’ve got a free moment. When everything is connected at the end of the day, you will be able to figure things out.

>> Phenyl has been known to cause seizures, so avoid products that list it as an ingredient

Coccydynia, or tail bone injury, is not an uncommon medical condition, but very few people know how to recognise it. Shirley Mistry tells you all that you need to know about the condition — from its symptoms, to its causes and risks

What is coccyodynia?

signs & symptoms

The last link of your spinal cord is known as coccyx, or the tail bone. Coccydynia is an injury to the tail bone, which causes extreme discomfort and pain in the lower back region. These injuries are a result of and can also cause, fractures, dislocations and further bruising of the coccyx and pelvic bone. The coccyx is a triangular structure, made of three to five segments that are held together by ligaments. Injury to the area usually results in inflammation, that causes severe pain, especially when you are sitting. Women experience this injury more often and with greater severity, as their pelvic region is broader and therefore, the coccyx is more prominent and prone to injuries

l Tenderness in the area. l Inflammation. l Visible bruises, if the pain is severe. l Pain in the lower back during sexual intercourse. l Pain that get worsened after sitting for long periods of time. l Pain while passing bowel movements.

What causes it? There are several factors and incidents that can cause coccydynia. Take a look at some of the most common offenders: l Infections such as shingles

of the buttocks, can often lead to coccydynia. l Pilodinal cysts — a painful boil on the coccyx. l Compression of nerve roots. l A direct blow to the coccyx. l Sciatica — nerve pain. l Tumours. l A fall that leaves you in a seated position, with your coccyx suffering due to an impact with a hard surface l The coccyx can even be injured during childbirth, leading to bruises and/ or fractures. l Bone spurs.

>> Coccydynia affects the last link of your spinal cord and can cause damage to your pelvic bone

course of action Although coccydynia can be quite hard to treat, following up with your doctor, and adhering to medical procedures that he/ she recommends, can help cure the problem completely. If you feel any unexplained pain in your lower back region, especially after an accident, slip or fall, visit your doctor immediately. Based on your medical history and severity of the pain, the doctor will usually perform a physical exam, as well as refer to X-rays. If need be, the doctor will also perform a rectal exam to check for dislocation and/ or fractures to the coccyx. In cases where the cause of the pain is unknown, a local anesthesia injection is given to trace the injury back to the coccyx. As far as treatment is concerned, the first line of action includes a course of anti-inflammatory medicines to help reduce swelling and pain, along with regular application of a hot and cold compress to the region. Patients are also advised to sit as little as possible, or use a customized or donut-shaped pillow to relieve the stress on the coccyx when they are seated. If this doesn’t help, injections are administered to relieve the pain and swelling. Stretching exercises and manual manipulation of the bone through chiropractic treatment are also used. After the pain reduces considerably, light exercises are recommended and return blood flow to the region, to encourage the body’s healing abilities.

The negaTive effecTs of phenyl

Commonly used in households across India, phenyl is a go-to option when you want to make sure that a surface is spotless, keep cockroaches at bay or disinfect an area. But, Dev Goswami tells you why you should be wary of this chemical

I

n almost any household, you’ll always find a bottle of phenyl stacked away in a corner under the kitchen sink. This inexpensive chemical is used to clean and disinfect floors, kitchen platforms and sinks. However, studies have found that it’s not as safe as you think it is. Dr. Nutan Navelkar, head of the department of chemistry at K.J. Somaiya College of Science, tells us, “The chemical compounds that are present in cleansing agents are easily absorbed by the body through your skin, lungs and stomach. Prolonged, unintended inhalation, ingestion or even contact with phenyl can result in your body absorbing a significant amount of this chemical.” If you’re wondering how this exposure or absorption will affect you, the following are some of the common effects of phenyl poisoning: l Your skin and eyes can get burnt if they come in contact with phenyl. If they are exposed to it for too long, then it can even result in blindness. l Breathing phenol vapours can burn the delicate inner lining of your nose, throat and lungs. l Swallowing phenyl burns the inner lining of the digestive tract and can cause internal bleeding. l Breathing in phenyl fumes can fill your lungs with liquid and in turn, can lead to laboured breathing. l Phenyl has been linked to seizures and coma. l Excess exposure to phenyl can cause changes in your heart rhythm and can even lead to kidney or liver failure. The importance of taking precautions against phenyl is further underlined by Dr. Amit Kasliwal, consultant in internal medicine at Seven Hills Hospital. He tells us, “There is always a lurking fear when it comes to using phenyl. Housewives and children are at an increased risk of phenyl exposure. Additionally, the risk of unintentional or intentional ingestion of phenyl is always present. The corrosive fumes are known to affect people across all age groups.” So, the next time you’re out doing your weekly (or monthly) household shopping, make sure that you read the ingredient list properly and avoid products that contain phenyl. And, if you’ve been using phenyl for a long time, look out for symptoms such as fast breathing, fits, an irregular pulse, unconsciousness, low blood pressure, dark urine and a comatose state — all of which point to a case of phenyl poisoning.

BARBARA, OUR BEAUTy ExpERT, WILL HELp FIx yOUR pROBLEmS

Dear Barbara, For the past few months, my scalp has been feeling very itchy and there are always tiny flakes of dandruff falling from my hair. I seem to have a really bad case of dandruff and nothing that I have tried has helped get rid of it. I’ve changed the brand of shampoo I use, used an anti-dandruff shampoo on a regular basis and also tried home remedies such as applying lemon juice to my hair and scalp. While these solve the problem for a day or two, the flakes return soon after. Please help. — Raunak Tiwari, malad Dear Raunak, From what you’ve told us, you might need a medicated shampoo. The flakes could also be caused by an underlying health problem. However, it seems like you suffer from dry hair, which also leads to flakes. Dandruff flakes are big, and yellow or grey in colour. In your quest to treat what you think is dandruff, you might actually have aggravated your dry hair problem, as most anti-dandruff shampoos strip your hair and scalp of its moisture. If you don’t want to visit a dermatologist (although we recommend that you do), you can try using a moisturising shampoo for a few weeks. Remember to condition well. If the problem persists, visit a dermatologist, who will be able to prescribe you with medicated shampoos, or steroid creams, depending on the severity of your problem.

All About

ArgAn

Argan oil, often referred to as liquid gold, boosts the quality of your skin and hair. Shirley Mistry tells you about its origins and how to incorporate it into your beauty regime WHAT IS ARGAN OIL?

Argan oil is extracted from argan nuts, which grow on trees that are endemic to Morocco. A beauty elixir of sorts, argan oil is quickly becoming the next big thing with cosmetic and skin care companies the world over. The production of argan oil is still a fairly traditional process, as the extraction is done manually, right from cracking open the nuts, to grinding them and extracting the precious oil. It takes one person three days of work (on an average) to produce one litre of argan oil, which explains its limited availability and high prices. Argan oil works wonders and can simplify your beauty regime by eliminating the need to use multiple products and improving the quality of your skin and hair.

THE BEST USES

>> If your dandruff problem is persistent, consult a dermatologist immediately

Dear Barbara, I have a boil on my bottom. I usually get boils on my back and don’t bother too much about them because they disappear on their own in a few days. But, this is a real pain — literally. It hurts when I sit or lie down and sometimes, even when I am walking. Is it something serious? I desperately need to find a way to deal with the problem. Please help! — Shamista Khanna, Colaba Dear Shamista, Don’t worry, your back and bottom are actually the most commonly affected areas of your body, when it comes to boils. You can apply a hot compress to the area for around 10 minutes — this will relieve the pain and with repeated soaking, the boil will disappear faster. Remember not to pop the boil with your fingers, as that will only aggravate the problem. Since it has appeared on your bottom, you should be careful while washing your underwear and having a bath, because an accumulation of sweat and dirt is one of the most common causes of boils. Finally, we recommend that you visit a doctor because more often than not, a boil is a sign of an underlying health condition, which is usually diet-related.

The reason you should include argan oil in your beauty regime is because it is filled with vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and antioxidants that help improve the quality of your hair and skin. It is also devoid of the side effects of chemicals, harmful silicones and parabens that are usually present in most cosmetic products. Take a look at some of the easiest ways to get the maximum benefits from this oil. Helps soothe acne: While several oils and oil-based products often aggravate acne, argan oil, because of its non-greasy texture, is completely safe to use if you suffer from outbreaks. It moisturises your skin naturally, helps heal acne and its resultant scars and even reduces inflammation. Apply a few drops of argan oil onto pesky acne spots after cleansing and drying your skin. Massage the oil into the affected areas and you will notice the acne disappearing in just a few days. Lip moisturiser: Because of its non-greasy texture, argan oil is a great lip moisturiser. Not only does it hydrate your lips and prevent them from getting dry and chapped, it is also known for its lip plumping properties. Massage a drop or two of argan oil onto your lips for around a minute, and then use a tissue to pat off the excess oil. Saggy skin & stretch marks: Stretch marks are unsightly and can crop up on your skin even if you are fit. An easy way to tackle the situation, is to rub argan oil onto the areas that are most likely to be affected, such as your thighs, stomach, breasts and bottom. Argan oil is rich in vitamin E, which helps increase the elasticity of your skin, preventing, as well as reducing the appearance of stretch marks.

>> Argan oil contains several benefits for your skin and hair! Cuticle softener: If you have hanging cuticles that are painful and appear unsightly, rub a small amount of argan oil into them just before you go to bed. Not only will it soften your skin, it will also moisturise your cuticles and make your nails stronger. Healthy heels: If you suffer from cracked heels and aren’t getting the desired results from a body butter or a foot cream, rub a small amount of argan oil onto your feet. Massage it until it is absorbed and slip into a pair of comfortable socks to wake up to soft, smooth heels. Leave-in conditioner: If you aren’t sure of what chemicals to avoid in your hair products, simply skip using a conditioner and apply a few drops of argan oil to damp, towel-dried hair. It will instantly get

absorbed into your hair and hydrate your hair and scalp. It is also a great heat protector, so remember to run a few drops through your hair if you are going to blowdry or straighten it. Frizz control: To tame frizz and add shine to your hairstyle, give your shine spray a skip and try argan oil instead. Rub a few drops between your palms and run it through your hair. It does a great job of taming frizz and will last throughout the day, without making your hair look greasy. Body oil: If a regular moisturiser doesn’t keep your skin hydrated all day, use argan oil instead. Rub the oil on your skin immediately after you finish your shower. The quicker you do it, the easier it is for your skin to absorb the moisture.

Jolt to BJP; Nitish-Lalu alliance scores in Bihar bypolls N

EW DELHI: Three months after its spectacular showing in Lok Sabha polls, the BJP on Monday received a jolt in assembly by-elections suffering a 4-6 defeat at the hands of the RJD-JD(U)-Congress alliance in Bihar and yielding two strongholds to Congress in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. Honours were shared in Punjab where the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal and Congress won one seat each. Out of the 18 seats in four states for which bypolls were held on August 21, Congress and its allies won 10 while seven went to BJP and one to its ally SAD. The by-election setback for BJP comes exactly a month after it lost

all three seats in Uttarakhand assembly bypolls to Congress despite bagging all five Lok Sabh seats in the state earlier. In a major test of popularity ahead of assembly polls in four states, the BJP along with its allies, which had swept Bihar winning 31 out of 40 Lok Sabha seats, bagged four seats out of 10 where bypolls were held as against six they had won in 2010 assembly election. The 'secular alliance' stitched by ruling JD(U) with RJD-led by Lalu Prasad and the Congress won Rajnagar (SC), Chapra and Mohiuddinnagar (all three by RJD), Jale and Parbatta (both JD-U), Bhagalpur

(Congress). Congress wrested Bhagalpur from BJP while JD(U) defeated BJP ally LJP of Ram Vilas Paswan in Parbatta, which was won by RJD in 2010. Bouyed by the victory, JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar said the voters have expressed their "displeasure" with the Narendra Modi Government and suggested that the alliance would be broadened to include Left parties to check BJP's "communal agenda". BJP was, however, quick to reject that the bypoll results were a reflection on the performance of the Modi Government and said it had nothing to do with the Centre.

Real Estate Implications of Action on India’s e-Comm Front Fertiliser Minister Ananth Kumar

The positive fall-out of attracting US$ 3 billion in global investments on the realty sector or a market pegged at a little more than US$ 2 billion, India’s e-Commerce segment recently attracted US$ 3 billion in global investments within two days — and thereby hangs a tale… The Indian e-Commerce industry witnessed the biggest consolidation earlier this year, when Flipkart acquired Myntra as competition for Amazon in the local market. Flipkart then went on to raise US$1 billion in fresh funding from new and existing investors this July, only to be followed a day later by Amazon announcing its intention of investing an additional US$ 2 billion in its India business. The

merce will most likely stimulate demand for warehousing /logistics space for building back-end infrastructure. A significant share of this fresh foreign fund inflow of US$ 3 billion is expected to get channelized into building warehouses, expanding product line, upgrading and expanding supply chain, and possible acquisitions. This will ultimately benefit our economy as a whole. Amazon is already known to be planning to lease more than 1 million sq.ft of warehousing and logistics space by end-December, while Flipkart has reportedly leased around 500,000 sq.ft of space across the country, according to CBRE’s recently released Asia Pacific Logistics Report, Shaping Trends in Logistics. According to the CBRE report,

third titan on India’s current eCommerce turf —Snapdeal — has meanwhile raised more than US$ 200 million since January 2014, while its financial advisors are reportedly seeking an additional US$ 300 million from private equity investors. Ever since the new government’s formal Union Budget announcement that FDI in the manufacturing sector will be on the automatic route — clarifying that, “…the manufacturing units will be allowed to sell its products through retail including E-commerce platforms without any additional approval…”, investors have been bankrolling India’s fledgling e-retail segment. As a positive fall-out of these recent developments, India’s real estate sector will probably stand to gain; since the growth in e-Com-

with growth of e-commerce in the APAC region, the need for delivery efficiency, inventory management, and freight-forwarding will be driving the need for experienced logistics operators in the region. With these new investment trends in India’s e-Commerce segment, the major market players are anticipated to enter into agreements with logistics real estate developers for built-to-suit (BTS) warehouses. The peripheral micromarkets of India’s leading cities, with large tracts of available land parcels and their connectivity to key consumer markets are expected to be the favored locations for building such BTS back-end infrastructure. Going forward, one can only wait and watch for these developments to solidify in a more mature online retail environment.

However, the index is above its 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the four averages are rising and also positively trended. Further, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. Both these indicate a positive bias. Investors are advised to hold long positions. Work with strict stop losses on all positions

Reliance, ONGC, BP and Cairn believe current submarket price of USD 4.2 is impeding development of over a dozen discoveries By A Business Reporter

E

nergy giants led by Reliance Industries, ONGC, BP and Cairn India yesterday unanimously demanded an immediate hike in natural gas prices, saying current sub-market price of USD 4.2 was impeding development of over a dozen discoveries. As the government began consultations with stakeholders on raising gas prices, gas producers and consumers met a committee of secretaries (CoS) separately with their pleas on the issue. The panel, whose meeting was chaired by Power Secretary P K Sinha, gave a patient hearing to both sets and asked them to present their views in writing by August 28. Expenditure Secretary Ratan P Watal skipped the meeting of the CoS to which Fertilizer Secretary Jugal Kishore Mohapatra is member

and Rajive Kumar, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, is member secretary. Kumar said there will be another meeting of the panel this week. According to sources, while gas producers said as many as 10 Trillion cubic feet of gas cannot be developed at current below market rate of USD 4.2 per million British thermal unit, power generators said they cannot afford a rate more than USD 5/unit. Fertilizer makers too stated that doubling of rates, as had been approved by the previous UPA government before its implementation from April 1 was postponed first by the Election Commission and then by the new BJP government till September-end, would lead to increase in subsidy, reports PTI. While producers, who were invited separately, attended in full strength with the sole exception of Gujarat State Petroleum Corp (GSPC), consumer sectors were represented by their associations - Association of Power Producers and Fertilizer Association of India, besides some individual companies. Sources said producers gave 35 minutes of their unanimous view to the committee, which throughout the session was mostly listening

and offered neither counter suggestion nor argument. Sinha suggested that the participants should send their written submission addressed to Oil Secretary Saurabh Chandra, who is not part of the committee, by Thursday morning. The meeting was perfunctory with all operators in sync on issue of gas price except some vague remarks from state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) which acknowledged the fact that increase in gas price was required for both their existing production and new development but also mentioned that it was for the government to decide on a balanced rate. Sources said producers reiterated that the sanctity of Production Sharing Contracts (PSC), which the government has entered into with them, should be maintained. The PSC provides for a market discovered gas price. They also stated that the best option was the implementation of the 2006-07 recommendation of the Committee headed by PK Sinha, who was then Additional Secretary in oil Ministry, where it was stated that gas price should be discovered by asking consumers to bid. Sinha as Power Secretary is now taking of protecting interest of consumers.

Indian Pharma Market To Grow Better Than Global Peers By A Business Reporter

I

ndia's pharmaceutical market will see continued strong growth at a more favourable rate than its global peers and even if the country's GDP growth were to slow down, it would still represent a better growth opportunity, says Moody's Investors Service. Drug companies in the country could, however, face higher debt levels as the pharmaceutical sector in India grows, resulting in mergers and acquisitions, it said. "India's pharmaceutical market will continue to grow in the double digits, a rate which is more favourable than most other markets for the industry," Moody's Investors Service (MIS) said in a statement. Stressing on the potential of the sec-

tor, Moody's Vice President and Senior Analyst Kailash Chhaya said: "Even if India's GDP growth slows or is uneven, the Indian pharmaceutical market would still represent a better growth opportunity than many other geographic markets..." This is due to improving socio-economic conditions and access to healthcare against the backdrop of a rising prevalence of diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular problems, he added. The sector would also witness heightened activity of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) following global trend although Indian firms do not face the same growth pressures as other players across the industry, MIS said. "As consolidation in the industry continues globally, partic-

Metal Stocks Sink After SC Coal Ruling By A Business Reporter

BUSINESS

etal stocks witnessed severe drubbing, falling as much as 14% yesterday, after the Supreme Court (SC) held that all coal block allocations made since 1993 till 2010 before pre-auction era during previous NDA and UPA regimes have been done in an illegal manner. Following this, shares of Jindal Steel & Power slumped 13.97% to Rs 253.15 on the BSE. The stock was the worst performer among the 30Sensex scrips. Hindalco Ind plunged 9.56%, while Tata Steel lost

4.79% and Sesa Sterlite was down 3.89% on the BSE. Similarly, shares of JSW Steel went down by 3.52% and Hindustan Zinc lost 2.33%. Analysts said that the latest news on irregularity in coal block allocation scam triggered the panic button in the last one and half hour and led to steep decline in metal counters. The SC yesterday held that all coal block allocations made since 1993 till 2010 before pre-auction era during previous NDA and UPA regimes have been done in an illegal manner by an "ad-hoc and casual" approach "without application of mind".

ularly among generic drug companies, Indian firms will increasingly look to become involved in global mergers and acquisitions. We have already seen some Indian companies increasing their pace of acquisitions," Moody's Senior Vice President Michael Levesque said. The M&A activity could pressurise Indian firms' leverage from currently low levels, MIS added.

BUSINESS BRIEFS RBI To Redefine Deposits As Ponzi Scams Mount

In the wake of unearthing of multiple unauthorised deposit raising schemes and scams such as Saradha and PACL, RBI Deputy Governor R Gandhi yesterday said the Reserve Bank is working with the government on redefining as to what constitutes a deposit. "We are working on redefining definition of deposits. The 'deposits', as it is defined today, is inadequate," he told reporters after a conference of Chief Secretaries and State Finance Secretaries here. He said that in case of banks, the definition of a deposit is very clear, but it does not cover money collected by other entities for which the exercise is being carried out.

IN BRIEF Award for Devendra Jadhav

On July 20, Devendra Shivaji Jadhav got the Ultimate Jury and Audience Award for his 19 minutes Best Debut Short Feature Film 'And Gandhi Goes Missing’ in the Vittel Festival, France. He received a medal from the Mayor of Vittel, JeanJacques Gaultier, and Indian Ambassador in France, Arun K Singh. The film has Kamlesh Sawant, Sagar Talashillkar, among others. The story is about a boy with the surname Godse, who is looked down upon by his classmates and friends as everybody believes he has family connections with Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin, Nathuram Godse.

I

t is normally believed that dance is an art form meant for females only, but this misconception was proved wrong when three talented male dancers performed with lot of enthusiasm and sincerity and furthermore the performance was offered as a tribute to their mentors, which indeed was a noble and fine gesture. The programme was organised at the Sathaye college auditorium in Vile Parle. The three male dancers were – Ankur Balal, disciple of Odissi exponent Guru Jhelum Paranjape, Sunil Sunkara, disciple of Kathak exponent Guru Renu Sharma and Akshay Ayre, disciple of Bharata Natyam exponent Guru Tejaswini Lele. It was interesting to watch three distinct classical dance styles being performed on the same platform. The performance commenced with a brief invocation which was performed by the trio, followed by Odissi number in praise of Lord Shiva performed by Ankur Balal with comfortable ease, portraying the magnificence and the grandeur of the Lord. Ankur is a devoted dancer with fine control over the technique of Odissi, which is "lasya" oriented. Akshay Ayre is a talented dancer with fine control over body movements and technique which was quite evident in Bhagyata Lakshmi, Varnam and Tandava Nrityakari, which was particularly attractive for the easy display of the "karanas" and the "akash charis". If Akshay continues to dance with the same amount of zeal and passion, he can definitely aspire to be among the main rank of dancers. Sunil Sunkara is a handsome dancer and was pleasing in the Hori number that dealt with the inter-relationship of Radha and Krishna and the pure dance sequences. Although it was interesting to watch three male dancers together, the programme duration exceeded more than three hours and lot of time was wasted on changing costumes which should be edited and avoided. On the whole a fine attempt.

Krishnarao Pandit: Doyen of Gwalior gharana By Amarendra Dhaneshwar

L

axman Krishnarao Pandit is a doyen of the Gwalior gharana. He is a son and pupil of Krishnarao Shankar Pandit who was a titanic figure of Hindustani music in the 20th century. "Krishnarao Pandit is the virtual Emperor of the Gwalior gharana music," said the late Omkarnath Thakur, another great vocalist of the gharana in a tribute to Krishnarao Pandit over 65 years ago.Laxman Pandit has inherited the great musical heritage from his illustrious father and has carried the legacy on. Based as he is in Delhi, the 80 plus veteran in a winner of the coveted Sangeet Natak Academy award and many such prestigious honours.Pandit sings in a broad and resonant voice and his music has classical solidity about it. It also has a lot of effervescence. "The quintessence of the Gwalior gharana music is the 'ashtang' concept of voice projection and modulation. It means eight different ways in which the singer embellishes the raga through vocal ornamentations. They are 'meend' (glissando), 'gamak' (specific note produced

with thehelp of the microtones of the adjoining notes), 'khatka' (sharp musical pattern enunciated with a jerk) etc," explained Pandit. He sang the raga 'Lalit' as his main presentation. 'More ghar aavo' had natural D as opposed to the flat D which is popularly employed. Laxmanrao projected his voice with full force and elicited approval and appreciation from the audience. Pandit's musical ancestry is considered to be chaste and pure. Classical

singers who invented the khyal form in the late 18th century later shifted to Lucknow because of the political uncertainties during the closing phases of the Mughal empire. Pupils of the Lucknow singers later migrated to Gwalior and became court musicians. Pandit's grandfather Shankar Pandit was their disciple and he offered his Ustad (teacher) Nissar Hussain Khan a shelter in his house which was something unheard of in those times. Thus the Panidts of Gwalior received real gems of traditional khyal compositions from these musicians. We did get a flavour of them when Laxman Pandit sang khyals in ragas like 'Surdasi Malhar' and 'Alhaiya Bilawal'. Pandit is also adept at singing the tappa form of music. The tappa is a semi-classical form of music which is highly complex and demanding. He was on a concert tour of the Punjab and there was a lukewarm response to some of his performances which set him thinking. He was asked to sing something which was 'palatable' to the local audiences. So he picked up some folk songs and sang them giving them a classical touch.

scar-winning British filmmaker Richard Attenborough, renowned for his critically-acclaimed biopic on Mahatma Gandhi, has died. He was 90. The actor's son, Michael Attenborough told the BBC that his father died at lunchtime yesterday. He had been in poor health for some time. Lord Attenborough won an Academy Award for best director for 'Gandhi', one of the

One of Britain's leading actors before becoming a highly successful director, he appeared in films like 'Brighton Rock', World War II prisoner of war thriller 'The Great Escape' and later in blockbuster 'Jurassic Park' as a theme park developer. Lord Attenborough had been in a nursing home with his wife

for a number of years, BBC reported. He had also been in a wheelchair since falling down stairs six years ago. Paying tribute to him, British Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted: "His acting in 'Brighton Rock' was brilliant, his directing of 'Gandhi' was stunning – Richard Attenborough was one of the greats of cinema." Along with his naturalist brother David Attenborough, Lord Attenborough was one of Britain's best-known screen celebrities.

BIRTHDAY FORECAST: A travel plan for this year will go off smoothly making you benefit. You may have to withdraw from a certain project or certain changes around you could make you have second thoughts about continuing in your present job or work. If confronted with a difficult situation, take time off, to think about the problem; you will find suitable answers. Health may not be good throughout the year. Regular medical checkup, light physical exercise and a balanced diet will help you to maintain health. BABIES BORN TODAY: Good-looking, sturdy, independent, emotional, sensitive, healthy and long-lived. Can be ruthless and at the same time very helpful, concerned and loving. Well-educated, will have good leadership qualities. Self reliant will be self employed and successful in industry and business. ARIES (March 21 - April 20): You will be making travel plans to scan new areas of interest and will come across some favorable job opportunities or business proposals. Students seeking admission to important university or college will get a favorable response. Home and family life is happy and congenial.

TAURUS (April 21 - May 20): The day begins with good news arriving from an overseas dispatch. Perhaps a journey or communication will help to pave the way for further growth. A willingness to change your approach more than your state of affairs will go a long way in helping you achieve what you want. There will be an opportunity for you to return a favor. You are attracted to someone you are seeing a lot of late but making a commitment now is out of the question for the moment.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20): You could get a bit carried away when spending money on home improvements or making an important investment. However there will soon be some extra money coming in that will help to ease your financial situation. Make no further investments in business or in securities. At a social gathering you will be very much in demand. Happiness in the family set-up is assured. Your beloved will be great support.

CANCER (June 21 - July 21): There are minor adjustments to be made. Pay attention to paper work and study documents carefully before giving your approval. A tempting job offer is likely but you may discover later that things are not what they seem to be. Home life exudes warmth. This is the time to make it up to your beloved and restore faith and confidence in those who love you.

LEO (July 22 - August 21): This is the right time to ask for help if you need it. Adjustments are necessary almost at every level. You must adapt to some things that you cannot change. Do not be rigid and accept readily with grace. Use your money wisely, for there may be several demands. A long distance journey to a pilgrim spot or the need to meet a person you look up to is likely. The need to get an unbiased opinion about your affairs is strong.

VIRGO (August 22 - September 21): Find time to plan for what lies ahead rather than reflect on the past. You will be successful in dealing with your problems if you give yourself another chance. You will have the support of family who believes in you and have the faith that you will be successful in what you want to do. For peace and harmony in the family make extra effort. It will be easier for you to make compromises rather than expect others to change.

LIBRA (September 22 - October 22): Personal initiatives will help a lot, but joint ventures or teamwork could be more beneficial. Someone from overseas will be in touch. Keep your mind open to new ideas and views. Financially it is a rewarding day. You can look forward good news in the mail. Fears and uncertainties are a part of life but when discussed with a person who cares for you somehow it eases the burden and makes life easier.

SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21): Consistent hard work that you had put in earlier will get you what you want. Benefits through government are indicated. A sincere approach in life always gets rewarded. You must not feel that you get little, and late, in comparison to the hard work you put in. Life has its own pattern. A new association with a person of the opposite sex overwhelms you and you can hardly concentrate on work and other things that are important for you.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 December 20): Any project started or initiated today will have a favorable outcome. Criticism of any kind should be taken in the right spirit. Misunderstandings in your love life are intriguing. Avoid seeking a solution because you will only succeed in confusing the issue further.

CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 19): Wait a while before thinking of making any changes in your working environment. A change of job or work at this juncture is not advisable. Do not be carried away by attractive promises of financial gains and avoid investing any money in ventures about which you know very little.

AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18): A very exciting day lies ahead for you. There will be opportunities for you to better your prospects at work. Meetings scheduled for today will lead to gains in the near future. Socially too there will be a good chance for you to become member or be accepted at a prestigious forum or association.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20): The financial position will be good but there is a need to watch wasteful expenditure. Legal issues get resolved. With your ambitious nature you may wish to acquire more knowledge and may join a short-term course. Plan finances carefully for there may be unexpected expenses around the corner. Handle relationships with tact. A minor clash could flare up and become ugly. You may end up saying things you would not normally and later regret.

BCCI TAKES EXCEPTION TO DHONI’S COMMENTS ON FLETCHER

SPORTS

Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, AUGUST 26, 2014

N

EW DELHI: BCCI took exception to Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's statement that coach Duncan Fletcher continues to be the "boss" of the team, describing it as "unbecoming of the Indian captain" who had "overstepped his brief". "Dhoni is no one to comment as to who is the boss of the team. It's not his domain," a senior BCCI office-bearer told PTI. Dhoni's comments at Bristol on Sunday that the under-fire Fletcher was the "boss" and would continue to be so till next year's World Cup will now figure in the next meeting of the Board's Working Committee.

Dhoni is no one to comment as to who is the boss of the team. It's not his domain. What happened is very disappointing and unbecoming of an Indian captain. Obviously, Dhoni has overstepped his brief as an Indian captain.

SENIOR BCCI OFFICE-BEARER

The Indian captain's comments have also raised speculation on whether he was on the same page with the BCCI bigwigs who had appointed Ravi Shastri as the Director of cricket in the wake of the team's shambolic performance in the Test series against England.

Rain washes out India-England ODI series opener

BRISTOL: The first ODI of the fivematch series between India and England was today abandoned without a ball being bowled due to relentless rains and wet ground conditions here. At the Gloucester County Ground, the match officials decided to call off the five-match series opener at 1.30 pm local time following heavy showers. The forecast for the match was never good and it started raining late yesterday night, and it didn't stop even for a until morning. The rain did subside for a 20-30 minutes, only to pour down with greater intensity thereafter and never relented for even a moment. The grounds men though weren't the ones to give up in a hurry. The whole square had been under covers since morning but they were busy clearing up rain-water. Three super soppers were put in to service but they would have been useful only if the rain had stopped. The ground staffs efforts proved even more futile when puddles started forming on the outfield, signaling that the drainage was now getting choked. The last cut-off time for the match to start was 3.45 pm local time (8.15 pm IST).

A very senior office-bearer, who is among the top decision makers in the board, made it clear that the matter will come up for discussion at the Board's next Working Committee meeting. "What happened is very disappointing and unbecoming of an Indian captain. The matter will come up for discussion at the next working committee meeting of the board. Obviously, Dhoni has overstepped his brief as an Indian captain. The media can ask him any question but being a matured cricketer, he should know what his lines are. Just like BCCI officials are not going to decide who is in the playing XI, Dhoni does not decide who is going to stay till what time. He has not been entrusted with the duty of recruiting the support staff or commenting on their tenure," said the official, who has also accompanied Indian team as manager on various tours. BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel had made it clear that the team would now be "Ravi Shastri's baby" and Fletcher will have to report to him. Shastri himself had said in media interviews that Fletcher will have to report to him and he will be the overall incharge of the team. However, Dhoni came at the pre-match press conference and put his weight behind the beleaguered coach Fletcher by declaring that he continued to remain the 'boss' and will stay in that position till the 2015 World Cup. "He (Fletcher) will lead us into the World Cup," Dhoni had said at the press conference.

Varun Aaron eyes county stint L

ONDON: Keen to follow in teammate Cheteshwar Pujara's footsteps, Indian pacer Varun Aaron has expressed a desire to play County cricket in the near future. Aaron, who impressed one and all by his consistent pace during the Test series, wants to improve his bowling skills and said that there is no better place than England to hone talent. "Playing county cricket is one of those things that is high on my priority list," Aaron was quoted as saying by 'Sky Sports'. Indian top-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara signed up with Derbyshire on Saturday after the teams' 1-3 loss to the Alastair Cookled side in the five-Test series. And it seems that Indian players, in a bid to improve their overseas performances, are looking for County stints. "The cricket in England is very competitive because the conditions don't favour either the batsmen or bowlers too much," he said. Aaron showed promise by picking up three wickets in his first appearance at Old Trafford and famously broke Stuart Broad's nose with a bouncer that went through the helmet. Aaron also played in the two warm-up games against Derbyshire and Leicestershire and

hopes to find space in his busy schedule to be a part of these clubs. "But if we have an early IPL next time, then I would definitely look forward to playing county cricket, at least for half a season," he said. "I think I've played enough in England - I've been here two months - so I have a decent understanding of English conditions.

WHEN YOU LOSE, YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR COMBINATION IS: DRAVID Former India captain Rahul Dravid today said that the Indian team should better win some ODI matches or else they will be confused about the team combination going into the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. "If you start losing games you don't know what your team combination is. If you win and players' establish their positions in the side, you have a better idea of the team," Dravid told the ESPN Cricinfo. "There is no doubt in the run up to the World Cup that the team will try to have some wins under its belt. They want to have that confidence going into the World Cup and know what your team is," he said. The ODI series against England is very important from India's perspective, said Dravid.

Cheap shot to blame IPL for India’s poor Test show: Pietersen

LONDON: Retired English cricketer Kevin Pietersen has said it was "cheap shot" to blame the Indian Premier League for the visitors' shambolic performance in the recently-concluded five-Test series against England. India twice went down to England by an innings as they lost the five-Test series 1-3. "It is a cheap shot to blame the IPL and portray the young Indian player as being uncaring about Test cricket," said Pietersen. "I know Virat Kohli will be hurting and I know how happy Murali Vijay was to score a century at Trent Bridge and almost get another one at Lord's. It was dream come true for all of them to play a Test at Lord's. It hurts these guys every single time they do not score Test runs," he wrote in his column in 'Daily Telegraph'. The exiled former captain also feels that rather than the players, the blame lies with the Indian cricket Board (BCCI) officials for not letting the youngsters appear in domestic Twenty20 tournaments overseas. "What's not helping India away from home in Test cricket is not the IPL but the lack of opportunities for playing cricket abroad, which is a huge negative in terms of progression outside India. The Board of Control for Cricket in India has stopped its players appearing in Twenty20 competitions because it does not want to add broadcast value to tournaments that rival the IPL," Pietersen said. He further added that England would be more than happy to welcome the Indians to be a part of the county cricket. "It (BCCI) has to loosen its stance on players appearing in first-class domestic competitions abroad if it wants to build a successful Test team. Send players away to spend time in county cricket or the southern hemisphere.""This does not apply just to batsmen. Indian bowlers need to learn the lengths they have to bowl in Australia, South Africa or England. The opportunities are there for every player. We would welcome them in England, they just need to be encouraged to look beyond their home country," he explained.

IN BRIEF Kalyani Group bags I-League spot

MESSI'S BACK WITH A

FC Barcelona's Lionel Messi from Argentina kicks the ball to score against Elche during a Spanish La Liga soccer match at the Camp Nou Stadium in Barcelona, Spain.

BRACE AS BARCA WINS OPENER

B

ARCELONA: Lionel Messi scored twice to help 10-man Barcelona start the Spanish league with a 3-0 win over Elche in the debut of coach Luis Enrique on Sunday, with the Argentina star looking eager to put last season's disappointments behind him. Messi used a signature burst of speed to dribble free of a pack of opponents before slotting in Barcelona's first goal in the 41st. Minutes later Barcelona lost Javier Mascherano to a direct red card when he fouled Elche's Garry Rodrigues with only goalkeeper Claudio Bravo to beat. But Barcelona's 18-year-old Munir El Haddadi, starting for the injured Neymar, scored seconds after halftime before Messi got his second goal in the 63rd after again confounding a group of defend-

ers. Elsewhere, promoted Eibar beat Real Sociedad 1-0 for a winning debut in the first division, while Celta Vigo beat Getafe 3-1. After Barcelona lost its Spanish league title in the last round of last season and Argentina lost to Germany in the World Cup final, Messi summed up his desire for the new campaign to begin by writing on Facebook before the game: "First match today!!! I hope God is on our side for a great season." It started with a bad omen, though: Just seconds after kickoff, the game was paused when a black cat ran onto the Camp Nou pitch before stewards managed to herd it off. But aside from Mascherano's red card, there was no bad luck for

Barcelona. Messi looked back to his best and his pair of goals seemed the perfect answer to critics who had said the four-time world player of the year had lost a step. He was lively from the start, both in attack and in defense, and scored his goals in classic Messi fashion: putting the ball on his left boot to breeze around his markers before picking his spot in the opponent's net. With Neymar out and new signing Luis Suarez suspended until October, Munir got the nod from Enrique and had Barcelona's first chance when he fired the ball off the goalframe in the 22nd. Andres Iniesta followed suit with a strike onto the crossbar in the 32nd as Barcelona piled up chances before Messi converted.

Sergio Busquets sent an errant Elche pass to Messi, who used four quick touches to open an angle around three Elche players before slotting home his first goal. Moments after Barcelona grabbed the lead, Busquets' poor back pass forced Mascherano to foul Rodrigues to stop a one-oneone opportunity with Bravo. Elche failed to take advantage of the extra man and Munir, who debuted with only had Barcelona's "B-team" in March, doubled the lead with a skillful tap with the tip of his left boot to float Ivan Rakitic's long pass over goalie Przemyslaw Tyton. Messi added the third goal despite being shadowed by four defenders, skirting along the edge of the area until he saw the chance to slot the ball inside the post.

Rosberg to pay for Hamilton crash: Mercedes boss S

PA (BELGIUM): Nico Rosberg will face serious consequences, but his comments were misinterpreted and he did not deliberately crash into Lewis Hamilton in the Belgian Grand Prix, according to Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff. Speaking after a heated meeting to review Sunday's stormy race won by Australian Daniel Ricciardo, Wolff explained that Rosberg, who was booed on the podium, had wanted to make a point by not giving way when the pair collided on lap two. But that, he said, did not mean he had intended to crash with Hamilton puncturing the Briton's left rear tyre and wrecking his race. Hamilton retired pointless with four laps remaining after battling at the back of the field and later said Rosberg had told him he had hit him deliberately. "It looked quite clear to me, but we just had a meeting about it and he basically said he did it on purpose," said Hamilton. "He

Rosberg damaged his front wing and punctured the left rear wheel of Hamilton's car in the process during the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium. said he did it on purpose... He said he could have avoided it. He said 'I did it to prove a point'. He, basically, said 'I did it to prove a point' and you don't have to just rely on me -- go and ask Toto [Wolff ], Paddy [Lowe] and all those guys who are not happy with him as well." Rosberg, with a broken front wing, survived and finished second to open up a 29-points lead

over Hamilton in the title race with seven races remaining. "Today we've seen the limits of the slap on the wrist," said Wolff. "The slap on the wrist is not enough. "If Lewis has said that it's going to be a slap on the wrist, and that there's going to be no consequence, then he's not aware of what consequences we can implement."

I DON'T SEE MYSELF RETIRING EVER, SAYS F1 BOSS ECCLESTONE Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, free from his bribery trial in Germany, says he has no plans to quit after running the show for almost four decades and his current focus is on tackling the popularity issue facing the sport even though "it is nothing big and just a phase". Ecclestone insisted that his court case, which started in April and ended earlier in the month, did not affect his routine work. "I had it all covered actually. The hearings did not make much of a difference. I was busy working on legal matters during weekdays and then I was there in the paddock at race weekends like usual. Now I will only have more time for the sport," Ecclestone told PTI from his London office. The 83-year-old remains a permanent figure in world of Formula One, putting countless rumours on his retirement to rest.
