t has taken the Brihanmumai Municipal Corporation (BMC) ten whole years to respond to a question of school safety raised by a municipal corporator in 2004. After the massive fire broke out at a school in Tamil Nadu in July 2004, killing 83 children and injuring 27, all between 8 – 10 years of age, Shiv Sena corporator Vanita Insulkar had inquired at the education committee meeting about the fire safety equipment to be installed in civic schools and the training of teachers to fight fires, in September 2004.
The BMC education department answered this query this month, stating that they had decided to install fire extinguisher in all the BMC schools in 2007. In 2009, the fire brigade inspected civic and aided schools in the city. In all, the BMC runs 1,291 primary and secondary schools in 452 buildings. In these schools, the BMC has installed a total of 3,587 fire extinguishers and has directed all private aided schools to install fire safety equipment. The BMC is expected to purchase more fire fighting equipment Continued on pg 8 «

The Oshiwara police officers said that Araiyya owns a security agency in Andheri and as per his statement, he had not made the call. He has told police officials that he was sitting with his friends at a local bar when one of them borrowed his phone to make a call. The police officials are now trying to determine which of Araiyya’s friends made that call and why did he call the IG of Punjab. “We are trying to find out from where did the caller get Chauhan’s number,” said an officer from the ATS.
