Civic body takes a full 10 years to reply to query regarding safeguards in BMC schools By Khushboo Panjabi

Following the hike in first class rail fares, I decided to give up my luxurious lifestyle and immediately bought this car!

t has taken the Brihanmumai Municipal Corporation (BMC) ten whole years to respond to a question of school safety raised by a municipal corporator in 2004. After the massive fire broke out at a school in Tamil Nadu in July 2004, killing 83 children and injuring 27, all between 8 – 10 years of age, Shiv Sena corporator Vanita Insulkar had inquired at the education committee meeting about the fire safety equipment to be installed in civic schools and the training of teachers to fight fires, in September 2004.

The BMC education department answered this query this month, stating that they had decided to install fire extinguisher in all the BMC schools in 2007. In 2009, the fire brigade inspected civic and aided schools in the city. In all, the BMC runs 1,291 primary and secondary schools in 452 buildings. In these schools, the BMC has installed a total of 3,587 fire extinguishers and has directed all private aided schools to install fire safety equipment. The BMC is expected to purchase more fire fighting equipment Continued on pg 8 «

He was handed over to the ATS officers.According to police officers, Chauhan received a call at 12.15 am on Wednesday from a Mumbai-based mobile number, and the person identified himself as a member of the Indian Mujahideen.Chauhan immediately informed the Mumbai police who traced the call to a location in Oshiwara. With the help of the Oshiwara police, the ATS officers arrested Araiyya from flat number 306 of Gaodevi society. The Oshiwara police officers said that Araiyya owns a security agency in Andheri and as per his statement, he had not made the call. He has told police officials that he was sitting with his friends at a local bar when one of them borrowed his phone to make a call. The police officials are now trying to determine which of Araiyya’s friends made that call and why did he call the IG of Punjab. “We are trying to find out from where did the caller get Chauhan’s number,” said an officer from the ATS.

he Centre is willing to take up the Mumbai Coastal Road, Worli-Colaba sea link and Nhava ShewaSewri sea link if the state government submits a proposal to this effect, stated Union Minister for Surface Transport Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday. Speaking to newspersons on the sidelines of the function to mark International Seafarers' day at Dadar, he said that since the state government wants to construct these projects, the Centre will not interfere in it right now. The minister added that the coastal road would require funding of around Rs 17 crore. surprise inspection by a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official landed a senior doctor, from the BMC-run KEM Hospital in Parel, in trouble for tampering with his attendance records. And the doctor in question is once again Dr. Uday Limaye, additional professor at the department of Interventional Neuroradiology, who had been pulled up for breaching ethics in medical practices earlier this year. The hospital had set up an inquiry against Dr. Limaye for conducting a private practice during BMC working hours. Despite being given several warnings, show cause notices and memos, Dr. Limaye went on with his practice undisturbed. This Tuesday, he was again suspended for trying to alter records in the attendance register. This misconduct was brought to light when a senior official from the BMC went on a surprise visit to the KEM hospital on June 23 just to see how the hospital was functioning. “I went to KEM just to see how things are working there and if patients are being provided with good services. When I went through the attendance records, I saw that this doctor has been tampering with

When I made an enquiries, other doctors in the department informed me that Dr. Limaye is very irregular at work,” said the official who wished to remain anonymous. Well placed sources at the hospital said that Dr. Limaye has been practicing at a well known private hospital in the city during the BMC working hours. Confirming what happened, Sanjay Deshmukh, additional municipal commissioner, said, “Yes, Dr. Limaye has been suspended and a preliminary inquiry is on.”

No more ‘projects’ for college students! By Yatin Ingle

ollege students as well as teachers will heave a huge sigh of relief now since the new grading system of external and internal marks in the ratio of 75:25 respectively, introduced by Mumbai University (MU), will rule out the need for students to do projects and assignments during their semesters hereafter. On February 4, 2014, the varsity conducted the Academic Council meeting which modified the marking scheme for MU's examinations. Instead of the current 60:40 ratio (60 marks for external theory exam and 40 marks for internal exams), a new marking scheme of 75:25 (75 marks for external theory exams and 25 marks for internal exams) had been proposed by the Academic Council members for the new academic year 2014-2015. Though the proposal was opposed by senate members, it was accepted by the management council and was implemented as the new marking scheme henceforth. Madhu Nair, member, Academic Council and Dean of Commerce, said: “Earlier the internal marks were 40, which included assignments/ projects. Now there will be only 25 internal marks which will be allocated for a class test, class participation and attendance. So the projects/ assignments will have to be dropped. Though the scheme has been implemented, senate members say that this will result in more failures

as the external marks have been increased to 75 and the average required for passing has also gone up. Pradeep Sawant, Senate member, MU told the ADC: “In the earlier 60:40 marking scheme students had to score around 24 marks for passing the external exams. Now since the marking scheme 75:25, students will have to score more marks to clear the exams and this sudden change in the examination marking pattern will adversely affect students.” In 2012, the MU had ruled out its 50:50 marking scheme and introduced the 60:40 scheme. Later, it was noticed that colleges had been engaging in malpractices while awarding marks to their students, as they had total control over giving internal marks. The MU then introduced the scaling down of marks, which deducted the internal marks of a student if they scored lesser marks in external exams than internal exams; finally, the varsity has forced out projects and assignments from the curriculum by introducing the 75:25 marking scheme. While speaking to the ADC, Dr. Naresh Chandra, Pro Vice Chancellor, MU said: “The new marking scheme of 75:25 has been already introduced in the current academic year 2014-2015. The new marking scheme has been designed considering the interest of students and syllabi of various streams. This will be the pilot year for this scheme; later a feedback will be taken about the scheme from students and professors.”

When asked if the BMC has a plan to identify any more such rule-breaking doctors in the BMC setup, Deshmukh said, “See, very few doctors indulge in such practices, less than 2 to 3 per cent. So, why have a plan for such few numbers and create panic among other doctors who work sincerely?” So if we go by the figures given by Deshmukh, only 24 out of the 1200 senior doctors at civic hospitals run private practices during BMC working hours. But another doctor, on the condition of anonymity, said, “A conservative estimate of errant doctors could easily be around

20 per cent. Private practice is lucrative. It pays well.” According to BMC guidelines, doctors working at civic hospitals are supposed to be on duty between 9 am and 4 pm. It is only after these timings that they can conduct private practices. For those who do not want to practice elsewhere, there is a provision called the Non-Practice Allowance (NPA) which serves as compensation for not taking up private practice. Another fact that emerged from this unannounced visit is that about 40 per cent of the class IV workers were not on duty and 118 nurses were absent that day. Apparently, none of them had received permission for leave. “I saw relatives taking their patients to wards on stretchers which is actually the job of a class IV worker. So I went ahead and checked the attendance records and found out all of this,” said the BMC official. Currently, Dr. Limaye has been suspended from work and show cause notices have been sent to the absent class IV workers and nurses. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

MBMC fails to kick-off Class VIII Fate of 900 civic school students hangs in uncertainty By Suresh Golani

I

n a classic example of how seriously the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) takes its job of securing the future of the younger generation, the fate of more than 900 students who have passed Class VII from municipal schools hangs in uncertainty. Reason: The Education Wing of the MBMC has once again failed to honour its promise to begin Class VIII from this academic session. At present, 9,859 students are enrolled with the 35 primary section schools in the twin-city being run by the MBMC imparting education in languages including Marathi, Urdu, Hindi and Gujarati mediums up to Class VII. After a resolution to this effect was passed in the general body, the MBMC had assured of extending education in civic schools up to Class VIII. As many as 900 students who successfully cleared Class VII were apparently told that they need not rush to get a transfer certificate as the MBMC schools were starting Class VIII this year. However, the students and their parents are left in a dilemma. Launching a scathing attack on the civic administration, NCP corporator Dr. Asif Shaikh said, “ The insensitivity of the MBMC stands exposed. Students who pass out from civic schools face difficulties in obtaining admissions for Class VIII in private schools. Many of them who cannot afford private schools are forced to discontinue their education. If MBMC fails to start these classes, where will the students go?” Until recently, the

government primary schools were restricted to Class IV and upper primary to Class VII. But as per the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, the government is mandated to make free and quality education available to children till the age of 14, which is Class VIII. “It is true that a new extension policy has been implemented. However, due to a pre-condition that there should not be a government or private school within a 500 meter radius of a school that wishes to extend to Class VIII, we need an official nod,” claimed municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani who has also assured that the MBMC stands committed to ensure that all Class VII students are accommodated in education institutions close to their homes.

Shiv Sena to the rescue Thanks to the timely intervention of Shiv Sena legislator Pratap Sarnaik, 35 tribal students from the tribal dominated Chene village, managed to secure admissions in Class VIII of Raja Shivaji School in Ghodbunder village. All these students residing in tribal dominated hamlets in Chene, who had cleared ClassVII of civic schools, were eagerly waiting to continue their studies, but were in for a rude shock when they learned that the MBMC had backed off from its commitment. “These students have been admitted to Raja ShivajiVidyala and the civic chief has promised to provide them with free books and raincoats,” Sarnaik said.

Charlie tea service anyone?

One of the reasons we are waiting for the rains to set in in earnest is because of the prospect of sitting in Churchgate-based Gaylord's 'garden section,' under the awnings, on white-painted wroughtiron chairs and watching it pour down. That, and also at the prospect of enjoying what it calls its 'Charlie Service', high tea from 3 pm to 7 pm. For Rs.500 plus taxes, two people can enjoy the ineffable pleasures of fine teas, and an assortment of eats from the patisserie, including muffins, cinnamon roles, chocolate and lemon tarts, various kinds of danish and, of course, dainty finger sandwiches – mint, chicken, cheese, vegetarian and nonvegetarian. “It's doing well,” says Noel D'Souza, general manager of the establishment from 1987, almost half of its lifetime of 58 years and who has introduced several innovations, including food festivals, and of course, has presided over the development of its bakeshop. “The actual idea came from the Lambas who own Gaylord. On a visit to London, they enjoyed the elaborate tea service very much and suggested I experiment. So I did, at the India Fashion Week in Delhi a couple of months ago, and it was a big hit. Then we decided to bring it here.” Noel says. It's been on only from Sunday, and already it has been ordered perhaps 20 times, a favourite with people who like their sweet and savoury bite-sized. Why Charlie Service? We asked. Who is Charlie? Possibly, it seems, the reference is to King Charles II, who, during his exile from England and his marriage to Portuguese princess Catherine de Braganza, became a confirmed tea drinker. When he returned to rule his country, he brought along the habit of afternoon tea. But it was only 200 years later, in the mid-1800s, that teatime graduated into a fashionable meal of sweets and savouries, among the wealthy upper classes. In Mumbai, we have yet to graduate to scones with cream and jam, but we are enjoying our fill of the rest. So much so that Noel says there have been requests for masala chai instead of English, to which he has graciously acceded. And Mumbaikars seem to want the idea expanded a bit, to cover Saturday and Sunday mornings as well.

Enough should be enough

“We understand that you have been approached by a few people, including Prof C N R Rao and Department of Atomic Energy employees, to intervene in the auction of the late Jamshed

Teatime and the full service, says Noel D'Souza of Gaylord, as he proffers his version of high tea to Mumbai

Bhabha`s bungalow.” This is the start of a letter to the PM's office, written by a number of prominent citizens in Mumbai, starting with Anil Dharker, author and founder of Literature Live. Which means that the vexed issue of Mehrangir, the bungalow that belonged first to the late Homi Bhabha and then his brother Jamshed, is not being allowed to die down, even though a member of the illustrious Godrej family has bought the place and intends to live there, thus preserving the bungalow as the great scientist's admirers wanted.

Flames of Truth

The letter points out that the appeals are misplaced. Neither was Dr Bhabha born there (actually, he was born in Kenilworth on Pedder Road, a bungalow replaced by a particularly ugly block of flats for staff of the Atomic Energy Commission. Nor did he live long in Mehrangir, which is 70 years old. Dr Bhaba died in a plane crash in 1966, when the bungalow was a little over 20 years old. It was younger brother Dr Jamshed who lived there for the major part of his life till his death in 2006. And he was utterly devoted to the NCPA to which he bequeathed his entire

fortune. Does it not matter that “in demanding that Mehrangir be made into a Homi Bhabha Museum, Prof Rao and others are disregarding not only the legacy of Jamshed Bhabha, but also ignoring the vital cultural activities of NCPA to which Dr Jamshed Bhabha dedicated his life. NCPA is one of the most important cultural centres in India, playing a significant part in promoting theatre, music, dance, cinema and literature in all Indian languages and in all possible forms,” the letter asks.

We have to hand it to Reliance Industries Limited (RIL). Other companies, faced with a blitz of information, much of it admittedly half-baked, about their biggest, most high-profile project, would send in the press releases. Perhaps a barrage of them. RIL goes one better. It sends out a small, exquisitely produced publication, the first in what promises to be a series on the subject of KG-D6, otherwise referred to sweepingly as the KG Basin story, or just Gas! Tellingly titled 'India has never been here before', it is obviously named at the non-technical man, otherwise known as 'the man in the street', the same one who thinks that if the GOI grants the company $8.4/MMBtu (Million British thermal units), up from the current $4.2/MMBtu, the The book that gives us all a look at KG-D6 as it tries to separate the myths from the company will make a killing and reality of gas pricing and other interesting issues he will end up paying more for cooking gas. that has made its money out of Without commenting on the acted in bringing the matter in the late Dhirubhai's canny merits or otherwise of the content, words of one syllable (kind of) to its main constituency, the people opening of the gates of the equity we cannot but admire the of India. Or at least that section market to the common man, plus despatch with which RIL has

In any case, the matter should be completely out of the public domain. In buying the place and retaining it as a bungalow, the Godrej family has demonstrated respect and sensitivity. Which is much more than the naysayers display when they keep demanding that the bungalow be turned into a museum to commemorate Dr Bhabha's life. That too at Malabar Hill, not the most convenient place in Mumbai for tourists (or schoolchildren) to visit. Here's hoping that the PM does not “intervene”. those who have watched relatives, friends and enemies do so. We also like the direct approach that has been used to provide thumbnail discussions of those issues most avidly discussed by said common man. Like the idea that raising the price of gas for RIL means we will all have to pay more for cooking gas. No, says the little book, that's not true. KG-D6, which is under discussion, produces methane and LPG consists of butane and propane. No, says the little book, RIL does not supply gas for CNG either. Also, it's stupid to say that the company is “hoarding gas”. Which is a technical impossibility. There's more in the same strain, the writing is simple, the pictures are dramatic. For instance, there is an arresting view of the Dhirubhai-1, the Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) facility in the oil exploration basin. And we also know that the KG-D6 block development is an example of 'extreme engineering' that put India on the global map of the category. In timelines and sheer size, apparently it is a world wonder.

Salman’s Hit-And-Run Case

Statements of witnesses ‘untraceable’ By A Staff Reporter

n a fresh development in the 2002 hit-and-run case involving actor Salman Khan, the prosecution informed the trial court on Wednesday that original police statements of two witnesses were 'untraceable', following which the case was adjourned to July 25. The trial could not proceed, although two witnesses were kept ready for examination, as their statements were not before the court and said to be 'missing', reports PTI. Police told the court that the statements of these two witnesses were not traceable and may have been kept at the Bandra court where the trial was conducted earlier. Judge D.W. Deshpande, while fixing fresh dates for the trial on July 25, 30 and 31, asked police to trace the papers and place them before the court on the next session. Police officer Kishin Shenghal, who had probed the case earlier, informed the judge that the papers were missing and said he had informed the Joint Commissioner of Police about this. Since Shenghal has retired, Rajendra Kane has been appointed as investigation officer in this case. He too was present in the court. One of the two witnesses, Kalpesh Verma, who was the manager at the parking place in JW Marriot Hotel, was ready to depose. However, prosecutor Jagannath Kenjralkar sought time as he said that the statement of this witness recorded by police was not before the court.

No assurance in insurance Sanjay Joshi received claim amount after a 15-month battle with the Oriental Insurance By Santia Dudi

S

anjay Joshi (48) learnt it the hard way that the promises and claims of the Oriental Insurance Company, made at the time of purchasing his mediclaim policy in 2009, were empty. In May 2012, private sector empoyee Sanjay met with a train accident and suffered head injuries. He then applied for the mediclaim and accident claim amount. Speaking to the ADC, Sanjay Joshi, said, "Most of us are not aware of our rights and we do not know of the cor-

rect place to appeal. These companies take advantage of this. As per my mediclaim policy of Rs.6,00,000, the price claimed by the doctor who treats the policy holder is the 'accident claim amount'. I claimed Rs.30,000, the amount given to me by my doctor, but I received only Rs.11,000. I also did not receive my mediclaim amount." "I appealed with the Insurance Ombudsman, a government body of insurance council and I fought for my claim amount for 15 months. I am thankful to the Ombudsman. It is be-

cause of this organisation that I finally got justice. It ordered Oriental give me my claim amount with interest and a penalty," he added. Despite all the efforts and legal orders, Sachin received Rs.11,000 as his accident claim which, including interest and penalty, amounts up to Rs.42,000. However the mediclaim amount, he recieved was only Rs.63,000 out of Rs.97,000. Sanjay is still fighting the case and is hopeful that with the help of the Insurance Ombudsman he will now get his outstanding money from the insurance company.

A cellphone was found concealed in the toilet of Adharwadi Jail in Kalyan, during a check carried out by the prison staff, police said on Wednesday. "On Tuesday morning when the usual inspection of the barracks was being carried out, a member of the jail staff found the handset concealed in the barrack toilet," constable A.J. he Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has charged one more Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable in the much talked about Kurla fake bail bond case. Man dupes investors of Rs.11 lakh

A share broker from Mumbai allegedly duped investors from Bhiwandi to the tune of Rs 11 lakh, police said on Wednesday. The accused, identified as Keshav G. Nalavade, 50, a resident of Mulund had informed about the scheme to the complainant Shubangi Bhoga and stated that the investors would get at least 15 per cent returns on their investment, Police Sub Inspector J.T. Thakur of the Nizampura station told PTI. In November 2013, Bhoga approached five people, who invested Rs.11 lakh, in the scheme, which was handed over to Nalavade. However, later when she approached the accused, he gave evasive replies, due to which she grew suspicious. Later on he even switched off his phone and remained untraceable, police said.

Man held for harassing wife for dowry

A 33-year-old man and his mother were arrested for allegedly harassing the former's wife for dowry in the city, police said on Wednesday. In her complaint to police filed on Tuesday, the victim alleged that her husband Ganesh N. Nair, a civil engineer employed with a private firm, and mother-in-law Vijayalaxmi N. 15 others being investigated for issuing fake ‘bail bonds’ to commuters

Sameer Zaveri. Zaveri extracted all the information he could, on the alleged crime, from the information officer, and on November 25, 2010, complained to the Chief Justice and demanded strict action. The Chief Justice, on his part, order a CBI probe into the matter on August 29, 2011. After a thorough investigation, the CBI prepared charge sheets against several

RPF constables on January 2013: Sanjay Singh, Kamta Prasad Dwivedi, Abhajirao Patil, Suresh Jadhav, Prabal Pratap Singh, Sambhaji Patil, Jamsher Khan, Atmaram Mahale, Aziz Shaikh and Laxman Ingole. Out of these, many have retired and one has expired. Along with these accused constables, the CBI has started investigating 15 other officers. They found that the

Kurla RPF Commissioner, Amit Jha, was involved and filed a charge sheet against him. Zavari said that there were many attempts by the authorities to implicate him, but has survived due to the court’s impartial judgements. “I will fight this battle till the very end,” retorted Zaveri. If the accused are found guilty, they could be awarded life imprisonment, say the sources.

leuths of the Thane (rural) police have arrested the former Chief Medical Officer of the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) on charges of raping his junior colleague on several occasions in the past two years. According to the police, Dr. Sunil Wadkar (38) committed the outrageous act during his stint as the CMO of the Vasai-Virar civic body. The 35-year-old victim, a resident of Goregaon, worked as a junior doctor at one of the civic health posts. “The accused would offer her a lift in his Skoda car

after duty hours.” In her complaint to the police, the victim stated that during one such ride in December 2011, Wadkar stopped the car at a secluded spot on the highway and forced himself on her. Wadkar, allegedly captured the photographs in his mobile and began threatening her for sexual favours on several occasions in the past two years. “He allegedly threatened to upload her objectionable pictures on internet,” said a police officer. Meanwhile, Dr. Wadkar, who resigned from VVMC and started his own hospital in Nallasopara last year, continued exploiting the woman.

Fearing social disgrace, the woman remained silent all these years. Unable to bear the ordeal any more, she mustered the courage to register a complaint against the doctor at the Valiv police station on Monday, following which the police arrested Dr. Wadkar and booked him under sections 376 and 506 of the IPC. “We have pressed additional charges under the relevant sections of the Atrocity Act and the Information and Technology Act against and he has been remanded to police custody till June 26. Medical tests on both, the accused and the victim, have been conducted,” said Assistant Police Inspector R.L. Puri.

Technical Education (MSBTE). Soon they found that the experience certificate that he had submitted, which stated he had worked at JJ Hospital, was also fake. In this regard, Anzula Lazarus, former principal of a school of nursing, had complained to the Kalachowkie police station in 2009. The case is still going on in the Mazgaon court. During this time, Deepak got in touch with Sunil Kadam, current secretary of the Yuva Sena. Through Kadam's backing, Deepak developed contacts in the Sena and boldly started running an extortion and bribe racket. Deepak's acts were exposed when Ravindra Garud, a contractor, lodged an FIR on July 16, 2013, with the Kalachowkie police station. Deepak was arrested and booked under the Atrocities Act, and was remanded to police custody. According to the police, Deepak, holding the post of secretary in the hospital's employee union, had demanded a 30 per cent

cut of contract worth more than Rs.12 lakh. The ADC has been trying to get in touch with Deepak, but he has not been responding to the SMSs asking When questioned about the hospital's inaction against Deepak for violating the suspension, Ramesh Parab, the election officer of MGM Hospital, said, “In January, the current Medical Superintendent had given permission to Deepak to visit his office in the hospital, but he was not permitted to do work.” These claims by Parab, however, were rubbished by the current Medical Superintendent Gajanan Bhagat, who straight away denied giving any permission to Deepak. whether the allegations of suspension and ban from the hospital premises were true and if he is campaigning for the hospital's employee election. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

Counter move: BJP vows row if Metro fares not rolled back CITY

By Prashant Hamine

A

t the receiving end over the suburban railway fare hike for last few days, Mumbai BJP unit under leadership of its president, MLC Ashish Shelar warned the government that if the fares for the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro were not reduced, the party would launch an agitation over the issue at the Metro stations along the route. Earlier, yesterday Shelar led a morcha at the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) office at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) demanding reduction of Metro fares. In a statement issued here, Shelar alleged that there was match-fixing between Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan led state government and Reliance Infra over the Metro fare issue. Shelar pointed out that the government plea filed by MMRDA in the Bombay High Court was rejected by the court. He added that the government deliberately made a weak case, thus paving the way for

He further wanted to know why the government did not have a third party audit of the project and an audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India. The Mumbai BJP president questioned why the government did not scrap the concession agreement.

Tatkare takes over as NCP’s state unit president Tatkare replaces Bhaskar Jadhav after the party's poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections

T

he rout in the Lok Sabha elections has forced the NCP to change its state unit president. The party yesterday replaced Bhaskar Jadhav with Sunil Tatkare. Tatkare, state's Water Resource Minister and a close aid of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, took over the reins of the party in presence of NCP chief Sharad Pawar. This decision was taken at NCP's extended working committee meeting, ending a year-long stint of Jadhav. Sharad Pawar was keen on having an OBC leader at the helm of the party's affair in Maharashtra ahead of the crucial Assembly elections as the party is making desperate attempts to secure a fourth straight term in office along with ally Congress. The choice of Tatkare, who hails from the Mali community, reflects party's eagerness to capture a chunk of the OBC space following the demise of BJP's popular OBC leader Gopinath Munde. With Munde's demise, there is a vacuum in OBC leadership in the state. The elevation of Tatkare could help the party to woo the backward classes who constitute a large chunk of the electorate. Addressing the extended working committee meeting after Tatkare's election, Sharad Pawar admitted that the upcoming polls would be difficult but asked party men to put defeat in the Lok Sabha

elections behind them. Pawar said, “There is a resentment against the Congress and the UPA and his party had to bear the brunt despite having a limited role in governance. “The UPA government was not able to respond effectively to the allegations of corruption after the Anna Hazare movement, when the atmosphere started building up against the government. We have to reach the seat-sharing arrangements through consensus, he added. In an indication that the NCP will try to drive a hard bargain with the Congress, Tatkare called for reworking the seat-sharing formula on the basis of the performance of the two parties in the Lok Sabha elections. “Seat-sharing with the Congress has to be reworked as per 2014 Lok Sabha results and not the last elections formula, he clarified. Referring to the thumping victory of Shiv Sena-BJP alliance in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, Tatkare said, “A tsunami does not happen often. We have to gear up to ensure that the NCP emerges as the single largest party. The Congress-NCP alliance suffered a humiliating defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, together winning just six of the 48 seats in Maharashtra. While the NCP won four seats, the Congress could manage only two, in the worst ever performance by the alliance partners in Maharashtra since 1999.

Accident or sabotage? A

LL these years, railway ministers who have presented the budget to Parliament have declared safety as their primary concern. Some allocations of funds were made, but nobody knew what exact measures were put in place. Dr. Anil Kakodkar Report on railway safety was prepared, but it is still lying on the shelves. Every year all over the country, accidents continue to take place. The railway mishap at Chhapra in Bihar is not likely to cause surprise: The Rajdani Express has been derailed. Railway Minister D.V. Sadanand Gowda took more than 12 hours to reach Chhapra via Patna and he has been told it is an accident. There are no bomb blasts and hence the conclusion there has been 'a sabotage'. The minister has ordered an enquiry. Nitish Kumar, former chief minister of Bihar, has come to the conclusion that the mishap was an accident. There is some Naxal presence in the area where the mishap has occurred and the chief minister, perhaps wanting to avoid any criticism against him may have said that. He has failed to contain the Naxal network. Only a thorough investigation will establish whether there has been sabotage by the Naxalites. A significant happening is, a few miles away from Chhapra, a goods train derailed on the same day. What is to be noted is that the Intelligence Bureau (IB) had issued an alert about an attack on the Rajdhani Express. This was, of course, ignored by the railways. The IB perhaps can now give more details about the information it has gathered and new conclusions could be arrived at. Next week, the railway budget will be presented to the Parliament. Railway Minister D.V. Sadanand Gowda can be expected to make a glowing speech – justifying the hike in fares and freight, emphasising the primary need for safety and making plans for making the railways world class.

O

N the morning of the railway accident near Chhapra on Wednesday, TV news anchors, especially on the Hindi channels, went slightly nuts. They connected the accident, which may have been an act of Maoist terrorism, to the recent fare hike of railway tickets and freight transport announced by the new railway minister. And, charged the minister with betraying the 'common man'. Here, I quote verbatim what a lady anchor said, “The government has raised the price of tickets by 14 per cent on the grounds that passengers will be provided with better services and better security, but this accident is proof that the burden of paying more should not be imposed on the common man. He now pays almost as much for a railway ticket as he pays for an air ticket and he cannot even be guaranteed safety.”What this lady and her comrades on television chose not to mention is that it is because the railways have failed to raise the price of passenger travel and freight for more than a decade that it is unable to provide better services. It is because fares are not increased regularly that they have gone up steeply now. When it comes to railway budgets populism always wins.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JUNE 26, 2014

So in the 67 years since the British left, Indian railway ministers have added only a miniscule amount of new track despite passenger travel having gone up six-fold since 1947. Independent India inherited 55,000 route kilometres of track and today this figure stands at 63,000 route kilometres to serve 24 million passengers daily. Compare this with China's record. In 1947, it had 27,000 route kilometres of track and today this figure is 78,000 route kilometres. But, this is only part of the great Chinese railway success story. On a visit to China in 2010, I took the train from Tianjin to Beijing and got there in thirty minutes (a distance of 130 kilometres) because the train traveled at more than 300 kilometres an hour. China now has trains that travel at such speeds across the length and breadth of the

Worst, most unsafe The most famous example of this came in 2012 when the hysterically populist chief minister of West Bengal ordered the prime minister to sack Dinesh Trivedi as railway minister because he dared to try and raise fares by between 2 paise and 30 paise a kilometer. Her Trinamool Congress was part of the central government at the time and the minister was one of her party member. The prime minister was controlled by Sonia Gandhi whose populist ideas exceed the wildest dreams of Ms. Banerjee so he was forced to comply. But, the 14 per cent increase was what even Soniaji would have been forced to order if her government had been voted back this time. The new railway minister has made it clear that he is implementing something that his predecessor had said was necessary. It is because of populism of the worst kind that the Indian Railways have gone from being among the finest and grandest in the world to being the worst and most unsafe today. Populist railway ministers have so mismanaged the railway budget that there has not been any money left for expansion, modernization or anything.

ON THE SPOT Tavleen Singh country and this means that in terms of rail travel it is about fifty years ahead of India. It is not just the speed of Chinese trains that fascinated me when I was there but everything about rail travel in that country. The railway stations are more modern than most that I have seen in Europe or America and on par with the newest airports in India in terms of services. At Tianjin railway station where I had some time to kill I drank excellent coffee in an attractive café and inspected a menu for fine dining in a nearby restaurant. And, there were bars and shops that I could have explored had I wanted. The Chinese appear to have noticed long ago that railway stations can be used to build more than passenger waiting rooms so there are shops, restaurants and hotels in which travelers can while away the time and add to railway coffers by spending their hard earned money. At Tianjin railway station I remem-

HOUGHTS together, millions of thoughts, give you the illusion as if mind exists. It is just like a crowd, millions of people standing in a crowd: is there anything like a crowd? Can you find the crowd other than the individuals standing there? But they are standing together, their togetherness gives you the feeling as if something like a crowd exists -- only individuals exist. This is the first insight into the mind. Watch, and you will find thoughts; you will never come across the mind. And if it becomes your own experience -- not because I say it, not because Tilopa sings about it, no, that won't be of much help -- if it becomes your experience, if it becomes a fact of your own knowing, then suddenly many things start changing. Because you have understood such a deep thing about mind, then many things can follow. Watch the mind and see where it is, what it

is. You will feel thoughts floating and there will be intervals. And if you watch long, you will see that intervals are more than the thoughts, because each thought has to be separate from another thought; in fact, each word has to be separate from another word. The deeper you

MATTER & SPIRIT go, you will find more and more gaps, bigger and bigger gaps. A thought floats, then comes a gap where no thought exists; then another thought comes, another gap follows. If you are unconscious you cannot see the gaps; you jump from one thought to another, you never see the gap. If you become aware you will see more and more gaps. If you become perfectly aware, then miles of gaps will be revealed to you. And in those gaps, satoris (sudden enlight-

bered sadly our own railway platforms covered in travelers sleeping, eating and waiting with their baggage on the floor and I remembered the smell of human excrement and rotting garbage that hangs over Indian railway stations like a disease filled pall.

Romantic experience It was not always this way. Train travel in India was once long ago a wonderfully, romantic experience, but this was before populist railway budgets wrecked everything. Once upon a long ago time railway hotels provided excellent services and were filled with old-fashioned charm. So travelers, including your columnist, often chose to stay in them instead of seeking out a hotel in the city. Some of these old railway hotels still exist and if they were restored could be as popular as the magnificent railway hotel I visited in the seaside resort of Hua Hin in Thailand. This hotel is run by the Sofitel group and is so wonderfully restored that it lures more travelers in this former private seaside resort of the King of Thailand than the newer hotels further up the beach. Why can we not restore our old railway hotels? Why can the railways not make better use of the very expensive urban land that it owns? Why cannot Indian trains at least have proper toilets instead of holes in the ground that scatter excrement and disease across the length and breadth of India wherever our trains travel? Why cannot railway safety standards be improved? Why cannot railway passengers get better food? There is a single answer to all these questions: populism. The railways cannot be financed by populism and good intentions they need money for maintenance and modernization. This will only become available when Indian journalists as well as ordinary citizens realize that they cannot become hysterical every time the price of tickets goes up. This is what always happens so railway ministers usually end up rolling back fare increases as has happened this time in Mumbai under political pressure. This metropolis has more daily commuters than any other Indian city and these commuters complain routinely of bad services and crowded compartments. Why should they have the right to do this when they are unprepared to pay for better services? It is the same story across India and the result is that Indian railway services are today decades behind the rest of the world. enment) happen. In those gaps the truth knocks at your door. In those gaps, the guest comes. In those gaps God is realized, or whatsoever way you like to express it. And when awareness is absolute, then there is only a vast gap of nothingness. It is just like clouds: clouds move. They can be so thick that you cannot see the sky hidden behind them. The vast blueness of the sky is lost, you are covered with clouds. Then you go on watching: one cloud moves and another has not come into the vision yet -and suddenly a peek into the blueness of the vast sky. The same happens inside: you are the vast blueness of the sky, and thoughts are just like clouds hovering around you, filling you. But the gaps exist, the sky exists. To have a glimpse of the sky is satori, and to become the sky is samadhi. From satori to samadhi (a state of intense concentration achieved through meditation), the whole process is a deep insight into the mind, nothing else. — Osho

CITIZENS of the country voted with gusto for the BJP to see a change of guard at the Centre. Citizens were in expectation that now “Dukh bhara din beete re bhaiyya aab sukh aayo re”. Time and again, “Ab achche din aane wale hai” echoed. Little did the voters expect that these achche din will be short lived. The manifold increase in the rail fares is a direct attack on the spine of the commuters. The increase should have been implemented slab- or year-wise, and not a direct one-time fare hike. The salaried class man is the most affected. This fare hike adds to his sorrows. If this was the hidden agenda of the BJP, they should have brought to the fore and one can aptly say they would have had a miniscule group of MPs at the Centre. The BJP has breached the trust of the common man. — Fayyaz S. Pathan, Dahisar

IT is good that the new Railways Minister has rolled-back the season ticket fares in response to the demands, not only from the affected commuters, but from the state BJP itself. Sadanand Gowda is new to the national scene and his fare hike decision was clearly an impulsive one, notwithstanding the support he got from his colleagues. A government that has professed to be a model one needs to make sure that its ministers tread carefully with a full understanding of the implications of what they say and do, especially since it has a long, long way to go. — Dr. V. WITH water, electricity and gas connections cut, it is not worth for the residents to be living in the Campa Cola Compound. Better counsel should prevail among them. Once the eviction is over, regulatory authorities will cite this example to other societies of a similar nature. Despite resisting for six long years, the scene is set for demolition. However, BMC officials who permitted the illegality have been left free and no action is being contemplated against them. We call it for the people, of the people and by the people, but the government is for damaging property. — Jayanthy S. Maniam, Sion

THE Campa Cola residents, after being assured by the Maharash-

tra CM Prithviraj Chavan, have surrendered their illegal flats. But the most important point raised in this battle is, henceforth, no illegal building constructed without due procedure will be safe in Mumbai. If anyone files a legal case against any unauthorised construction, the BMC must follow the SC order and demolish the said construction, failing which it will be considered Contempt of Court. A new chapter has begun for the city and the state government must issue notices to check the status of all buildings in the city, legal or illegal. It is high time the corrupt and inefficient BMC demolishes all illegal construction without fear and make Mumbai city worth living in for its registered residents. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

Bill to strengthen law against atrocities on SC/ST

THE Modi government is likely to bring a bill in the Budget session of Parliament to strengthen a law against atrocities on SCs and STs, a move initiated by the previous UPA government. The Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Ordinance, which was promulgated on March 4 this year, brought crimes like rape, assault and kidnapping under the purview of this act. Most of these crimes invite punishment of less than 10 years, but following the amendments crimes like these now invite punishment for more than 10 years, adding teeth to the existing SC/ST Act 1989.

Nagaland Guv resigns

NAGALAND Governor Ashwani Kumar resigned on Wednesday, becoming the third person occupying the gubernatorial post to put in his papers since the NDA government prodded some of the Governors, appointed during UPA rule, to quit. “I resigned this morning and came to Shimla. I am relaxed now,” Kumar told PTI.

Rescue work in progress after 12 coaches of the Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express derailed near Chapra in Bihar in the wee hours of Wednesday.

Maoist extremists allegedly derailed a goods train at a village in East Champaran district in Bihar on Wednesday.

The Maoists have given bandh call on Wednesday to protest ‘strong armed’ action by security forces against ‘innocent people’. Railway has ordered an enquiry. Railway Minister Sadanand Gowda has announce ex-gratia of Rs.2 lakh for the family of each of the deceased, Rs.1 lakh for the grievously injured passengers and Rs.20,000 for those with minor injuries. Gowda expressed grief over the loss of lives in the mishap.

HAPRA/NEW DELHI: At least four passengers were killed and eight injured when the Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express derailed at Golden Ganj station near Chapra early on Wednesday in suspected sabotage by Maoists. 12 coaches were derailed in the incident at around 0200 hours on Wednesday, a Railway spokesperson said. Five coaches-B-1, B-2, B-3, B-4 and pantry car-overturned in the derailment while seven other coaches-

B-5 to B-10 and power car-got derailed at the station, he said. Railways suspected sabotage by Maoists behind the derailment. “Prima facie, it appears to be a case of sabotage. There was a blast on the track, which could have caused the derailment,” Railway Board Chairman Arunendra Kumar told PTI. “Another goods train, 60 kms away from the station, also got derailed due to a blast. 18 wagons got derailed in the accident,” Kumar said.

Govt rejects Subramaniam as apex court judge N

EW DELHI: It is an ‘ominous’ and a ‘dangerous’ sign of abuse of institutions, Congress alleged on Wednesday slamming the government for rejecting Gopal Subramaniam’s name for appointment as a judge of the Supreme Court. Hailing the former Solicitor General as “one of the finest legal minds” of India, party spokesperson Anand Sharma said Subramanium was appointed as an amicus curiae by the apex court in many high-profile cases including in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter

killing case of Gujarat in which BJP leader Amit Shah came under the scrutiny. “It is very clear what are the real reasons behind it...As far as Congress is concerned, we can say without hesitation that Gopal Subramanian is one of the finest legal minds of India. He is respected globally. He was requested to accept the proposal of becoming a Supreme Court judge. “What is happening is ominous...The government wants a committed judiciary and politicisation of every institution, which is dangerous,” Sharma told reporters here. He rued that such institutional abuse had taken place earlier but al-

leged that this time it has begun to happen within a month of the government coming to power. Sharma said such ‘violation’ of institutions should set the alarm bells ringing. The name of 56-year-old Subramanium, who had served as the Solicitor General during the previous UPA rule, was recommended by the Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice R.M. Lodha for elevation to the apex court bench along with some other names. But the government rejected his name and returned the file over his name while accepting the recommendation related to others including another lawyer Rohinton Nariman.

‘Cargo ship with 16 Indians stranded off Dubai for a year’ D

UBAI: Sixteen Indian crew members of a cargo ship have been stranded for almost a year aboard an empty vessel anchored off a port here as they do not have visas and the ship’s documents have also expired, according to a media report. The ship ‘Maharishi Devatreya’ has been anchored 12 miles from Rashid Port here. Aninda Sengupta, who joined the ship as a captain in November 2013, said the vessel has been in anchorage since July 2013 when it arrived from New Mangalore Port, the Gulf News reported. The ship belongs to Varun Shipping company.

“When I joined, they told me that the ship would move to the Dubai dry docks in December 2013 and start trading normally,” Sengupta said. However, there has been no progress since then. The previous captain left the ship in November 2013, when Sengupta joined. “We are prisoners on the ship as we cannot leave it because we do not have visas to land in the country and we cannot go back to India because the ship’s certificates expired on December 29, 2013 and I am not authorised to move the ship. If I do and something happens I’ll be held responsible,” he said. “The owner has not paid us in

seven months and he refuses to do anything. He just sends us food and water every two months so we can survive and every time we talk to him he says next week or month and nothing happens,” he said. The crew have been in contact with the Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA), who have helped them pressure the company to fix their air-conditioner when it broke down in May. Yudhishthir Khatau, CMD of Varun Shipping Co. Ltd., told Gulf News that the ship is expected to enter the Dubai World Drydocks in mid-July. Khatau said the company is working to resolve the matter.

PM announces ex-gratia

The kin of those killed in the train tragedy in Bihar on Wednesday will get Rs.4 lakh each as ex-gratia relief from the government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Rs.2 lakh each as ex-gratia relief from the PM’s Relief Fund for the kin of those killed in the derailment of Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express in Bihar.

Setback to RIL, govt defers decision on gas prices N EW DELHI: In a setback to gas producers like Reliance Industries, the government on Wednesday postponed revision in natural gas prices by three months pending a ‘comprehensive’ review to make a controversial pricing formula more palatable. The current US $4.2 per million British thermal unit rate for gas, which would have jumped to $8.8 if a formula approved by the previous UPA government was implemented on July 1, will continue till September-end, Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said. The first revision in rates in four years was originally to take effect from April 1 but with general elections being declared it was postponed by three months. “The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs today decided that comprehensive discussions were necessary on the issue. It was decided that consultations would be held with all stakeholders and it was important to keep public interest in mind,” he told reporters after the CCEA meeting.

What a character! The opposite of the damsel-in-distress, strong fictional characters break stereotypes and challenge conventions. In this two-part series, Rhea Dhanbhoora & Dev Goswami take a look at a few TV, film and book characters that we wish were real, make excellent role models

T

elevision, literature, films, cartoons... these are all an important part of our culture. They might be fictionalised stories, but more often than not, the characters are drawn from real-world people, with qualities and characteristics that are anything but fictional. One such important trend is that of strong female characters who’ve managed to overshadow the rest, breaking stereotypes and serving as role models for women across the globe. In the first part of this two-part series, we take a look at some of the best female characters in literature and television.

Jo March

Television shows have always featured strong women characters as part of their cast in many of our favourite shows. We give you our pick of some funny, independent, brave and smart female leads.

You might know her as Josephine, but if you’ve really read Little Women, you’ll remember her as spunky Jo. She’s family-oriented, but she’s not looking for a husband or family to settle down with. She’s impulsive, going so far as to cut off her locks and leave everyone she knows behind if she must, but she is never afraid to go after what she really wants.

>> Tina Fey from 30 Rock

Jane Marple This lady sleuth from Agatha Christie’s Nemesis beat Nancy Drew bag and bagged a spot on our list. The ingenious, strong-willed lady does whatever she has to do to beat the odds and solve the case, making her a more mature version of the younger detective that we all know and love.

Carrie — Homeland Played by Claire Danes, Carrie’s name can also be found on a list of most annoying TV characters. Annoying or not, this spunky, smart, good-looking CIA spook often defies her bosses and follows her own instincts, with mixed results. Her character displays independence and more often than not, we see her fighting a lonely battle based on her instincts and beliefs while she fights her bipolar disorder.

Hester Prynne The Scarlet Letter became one of the most popular books of its time, mostly because of Hester’s strong-willed character. Condemned for having a child out of wedlock, she fought the stereotype of women having sex only after they were married with a sense of dignity that we’re still in awe of, while breaking cultural and social norms in her attempt to be a free woman. Since it’s a stereotype that women are still battling today, it makes her character even more relevant.

Lisbeth Lisbeth, from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is strong, both mentally as well as physically. She’s smart, she’s witty and most importantly, she’s a survivor. She’s anti-social, but fierce and no matter what, she gets what she wants, done. We love her!

Jane Eyre

Cristina Yang — Grey’s Anatomy Sandra Oh’s character might have been written off the show, but when Cristina Yang was a part of Grey’s Anatomy, she was an ambitious, aggressive woman who wasn’t afraid to go after what she wanted. The character was fiercely independent — best seen in her marriage to Owen, where she wasn’t willing to conform to what he wanted her to be.

Liz Lemon — 30 Rock

Mindy Lahiri — Mindy Project

Tina Fey’s Liz Lemon is a character who is both smart and extremely hilarious. Throughout the series, she’s been the best man at weddings, grown a moustache just to prove a point and all her actions and quotes make her a character that is easy to identify with.

The Mindy Project’s Mindy Lahiri is a great example of a feminist, albeit in a very unlikely way. Mindy Lahiri’s feminism is more about embracing being a girl than about rising above stereotypes or showcasing masculinity. Comedian, Mindy Kaling, who is a doctor on the show, shows us that you don’t have to change who you are in order to be successful, deal with conflict or be a feminist.

bernadette — The Big Bang Theory Considering that The Big Bang Theory is a science-based show, it is hardly surprising the sitcom includes women scientists. However, unlike most such characters on television (where the woman is usually in a lab-coat, doing something in a laboratory to prove her mettle through each episode), Bernadette shows us that you can be smart, as well as sexy. The microbiologist displays knowledge of more than just her field of study, has a PhD to boot and is fiercely independent.

Hermione

Emily throne — Revenge

Call her annoying, call her arrogant — but you can’t call this Harry Potter character stupid! We love how the little know-it-all expects the best from everyone, is ridiculously smart and unaware of how brave she is! We’d love to emulate her sheer steadiness in a crisis, if nothing else!

Revenge’s Emily Thorne is perhaps one of the most well-written characters in television today. The deeply flawed and morally ambiguous character displays a breadth of intelligence and the strength to carry on alone, in a world where she can’t really trust anyone. While she might not make for a great role model, it is rare to see a female character constantly beat the odds in a setting where almost everyone is against her.

Anne

Portrayed by Amy Poehler, Leslie is the perfect example of a truly feminist character. The hard-working bureaucrat often clashes with her superiors as she tries to provide the best possible service that her department can. She is extremely witty and even though she sometimes ends up annoying her colleagues, everyone in her office respects her.

At a time when women measured success according to who they married, how many children they had and where they settled down, Anne, from Anne of Green Gables, was definitely our role model and she should be yours too. The smart, competitive girl who wanted her own life more than anything else, was even willing to sacrifice a romantic happily-ever-after in pursuit of it. She taught girls the world over to speak their mind unabashedly. If you read Jane Eyre from a 21st century woman’s perspective, there’s a lot Jane could have done differently. But, in Charlotte Bronte’s time, she was the most complex, free-speaking and strong character there could be. She did not depend on anyone for anything and used her own intellect to get by, never needing a man to do things for her.

Olivia Pope is an extremely powerful political fixer and is one of the most closely watched characters on television right now. She has helped a president win the office and throughout the show, displays an aura of power that has rarely been seen around female characters on television. Love her, hate her, but you can’t argue that she is one of the strongest female characters on television right now. Claire Underwood might not rank high on the list of most feminists — after all, it seems like she has given up on a lot of her own dreams and some of her identity to support her husband’s attempts to become President. Except, she hasn’t. Throughout the two seasons, we see her fighting to manage a company and cause that she feels deeply about. At the same time, she is smart enough to understand the bigger game that her husband is playing and supports him not because he is her husband, but because she wants the same things as he does.

A character that’s similar to several other tomboy’s from the era, but definitely the one that started the trend, George, from Enid Blyton’s Famous Five, is well-known for wanting to and being able to do everything that the boys could!

Sofia is brawny, she’s determined and refuses to be ruled over or bullied, in the poignant, The Colour Purple. The book is filled with female characters to look up to, but the outspoken Sofia is one of our favourites, because of her ability to break convention and fight back.

olivia Pope — Scandal

Claire underwood — House of Cards

George

Sofia

of Elizabeth, is one of them. The deeply emotional and ideological Russian spy is colder, fiercer and more calculating than her spy husband, but her unwavering support for the ‘cause’ and her ability to set aside her own internal conflicts, make her a much stronger character on the whole.

Leslie Knope — Parks and Recreation

Alicia Florrick — Good Wife The premise of this show alone is enough to justify the inclusion of Alicia on this list. A disgraced attorney has to quit his job after a sex tape scandal and allegations of the misuse of his power. To support the family, his wife, Alicia, takes on a job at a law firm. Throughout the show, we see her fighting cases, taking care of her children, winning over the law firm’s bosses and dealing with her scheming mother-in-law. Her character might be little a complicated, but she more than makes up for it with lots of spunk and strength.

Elizabeth Jennings — The Americans The two season-old, cold-war era spy thriller, The Americans, has been praised for several thing and Keri Russell’s portrayal

Jessica Pearson — Suits She has achieved everything — starting as a lowly associate (the show doesn’t depict it, referring to it through conversations), she has risen in the ranks to reach the very top of her law firm. Yes, her law firm — Pearson Specter. Her’s is a case of a woman who has had an extremely successful career and one of the best parts of her character, is that her prodigy — who is supposed to be the show’s protagonist and the best lawyer in the fictional world of Suits — has never managed to come out on top of her. She is always his boss, always a step ahead of him. >> Gina Torres from Suits

ollywood actress, Neha Dhupia, who is known for her sharp sense of fashion and innate style, isn't one to shy away from taking risks when it comes to apparel and accessories. So, it is only fitting that she join LimeRoad.com as their style director. We chat with her about this new venture, what you can expect from it and her favourite fashion pieces.

Why did you choose to take on the responsibility of being a style director with LimeRoad? I always wanted to build something of my own and LimeRoad came very close to my idea of a break-through company. LimeRoad is changing the way that people shop for fashion and lifestyle products. It is fundamentally about women and the unique way in which they discover new products. The entire idea of discovering great products, sharing them with friends and seeing how a particular product will look in an ensemble through a scrapbook, is truly a next generation move. Anything that LimeRoad does is fresh, visually delightful, based on true womeninsights and technologically advanced, which makes the shopping portal a unique player in the cluttered e-commerce market. LimeRoad echoes my values and so, I am happy that our paths have crossed. Even before I heard of it, my nephew was sleeping on very cute pillows that my sister-in-law had bought from the website! What are the areas of fashion that you are going to look after, as part of your association with LimeRoad? I will be the mentor and style guide for the LimeRoad Scrapbookers and for their brand team. I will head the LimeRoad Style council, which consists of bloggers and star Scrapbookers. These Scrapbookers are spread across 138 cities in 22 states of the country. They are a group of highly enthusiastic, fashion-loving people, who love to mix and match products to create stylish looks. I will be responsible for the growth of this community and will be ensuring that every internet savvy woman in the country becomes a part of it. What are your favourite cities to shop in? Well, I love to shop in Mumbai! I also love to shop in Seoul in Korea and Florence in Italy. What is the oldest item of clothing you own and what is the story behind it? A dress that was handmade by my mum, is a piece of clothing I own that is very close to me. The gown that I wore for the Miss Universe pageant is precious to me as well and I also cherish the red lehenga choli (by Ritu Kumar) that I wore 12 years ago at the Miss Universe competition, as my national dress.

Ah Evelyn. We really want to like this look, because your French braid is so pretty and the bottom half of your skirt has a pretty print. But it ends akwardly below the knees and what’s going on with the partly studded, partly sheer, partly crop top-like top half? This is a miss.

Aditi’s jumpsuit is pretty and it fits her well. We even like the Peter Pan collar on it and the dangles, though not our favourite, are small enough to pass the test. The belt however, is not a favourite. A pretty brown would have added a little more oomph to the look.

The dress should have been a teeny bit longer, but on the whole, Mugdha looks very pretty in this summer-y purple and white printed dress. Her hair and makeup is simple and we love that she’s worn flats instead of trying to dress it up with unsightly heels.

You aren’t comfortable with the idea of delegating work and even when you do, you’d rather monitor every move that your team members makes — both of which can make you a bad boss, as you’ll end up swamped with work and your employees won’t appreciate you. This also means that your team won’t be able to grow or develop a synergy — affecting the work that you are responsible for. Start by paying close attention to your boss and read up on leadership qualities if you want to make a mark.

I

f you’ve been disappointed every time a promotion is on offer, it could be sign that you aren’t boss material yet. Being boss isn’t as it simple as it seems. From having the ability to communicate coherently, to effectively delegating and dividing work, there are several qualities that are essential to being a good leader. Answering these questions will help you find out whether you have what it takes to be a good boss.

Would you say that for the most part, you are never able to see any logic behind your boss’ directives? a. Yes. b. No. Do you believe in this statement — if you want something done well, do it yourself. a. Yes. b. No.

When you have to handle a project with a colleague, what factors do you base the division of work on. a. Based on who has more time. b. Based on what parts of the project each of us are most comfortable with. You are privy to information that doesn’t concern anyone in particular, but it impacts the entire company. Would you still tell your colleagues about it?

Mostly Bs You are ready to be a leader! You can think from a leader’s perspective and your communication skills are perfect for what a boss should have. You understand the importance of delegation and also know what makes a good team. You also understand an important thing about being a boss — while you should keep emotions out of decisions, a boss still needs to have and display certain emotional maturity.

My colleague often borrows stationery, snacks and even ideas from me, without ever returning any of the things that she borrows. While I don’t mind a pen or two missing from my desk, she is extremely unhelpful when I need a helping hand. She won’t help me out if I am struggling with ideas, always makes jokes about people wanting to ‘steal’ her belongings, when they are merely borrowing them and is averse to returning the help that other people extend to her. It is an annoying habit

Fresh Fights You may have finally found the man of your dreams, but the real challenge begins now! You need to monitor your behaviour, so that you don’t commit these common new relationship mistakes, says Yamini Walia

Too many expeCTaTions

You don’t want to pull a Ted Mosby (from the television series How I Met Your Mother), by saying ‘I love you’ on your first date... or even the second! Even if you think that you are in love, withhold your feelings until you are sure that your partner will reciprocate in the same way. Otherwise, you will just scare him away!

You need to give your relationship some time before you begin to expect things. It takes a while for two people in a relationship to develop a level of understanding and form a companionship. You could jeopardise your relationship if you expect too much too soon.

Thanks to films, many of us expect our partner’s to be Prince Charming. Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen in real life. Accept your partner with all his flaws, instead of complaining about minor things that won’t even matter in the long run.

While everyone enjoys getting attention from their partner, too much of it can be suffocating. Even if you feel insecure, acting on your feelings will cause several problems. Avoid constantly asking him where he is and what he is doing. The idea is to give your relationship space in order for it to move on to the next level. The last thing your partner is looking for is a needy, insecure companion.

natural and normal for children to be interested in their own bodies. While some parents may choose to casually ignore self-touching, others may choose to acknowledge that, while they know it feels good, it is a private matter. Parents can simply make it clear to children that they expect the child to keep that activity strictly private.

Correct age for sex education

I am a 25-year-old mother. I do not want to make any mistakes while parenting my 2-year-old son and therefore I need some guidance. I wish to know, when exactly do children start becoming curious about sex? CHILDREN are human beings and therefore sexual beings. All human beings are ‘normally’ sexual. From the very infancy children have curiosity about their own bodies, which is absolutely normal and healthy. It is difficult for parents to acknowledge this, just as it is hard for children to think of their parents as sexually active. Young children often touch themselves when they are naked, such as in the bathtub or while being wiped and diapered. They have no modesty

Target Rs. 135

We initiate coverage on ORCMNT with a BUY and a Sep’15 TP of Rs 135 as the company (1) should get a volume boost post its planned expansion (on track), (2) would benefit from a demand recovery in the southern market led by higher infra-led govt. spending and (3) enjoys an edge due to better profitability than most mid-cap peers. We build in a CAGR of 17% in cement volumes and 26%/51% in revenue/PAT over FY14-FY17. Despite the stock’s recent run-up, we see upside from current levels. Buy for a 45% upside. Karnataka expansion on track: With the demand cycle set to recover over H2FY15, ORCMNT’s planned expansion of 3mtpa at Karnataka (on track to commence by Q1FY16) would boost the company’s volumes – particularly with the AP government likely driving allocation for infra projects in the southern region. Also, post expansion, ORCMNT’s southern market exposure should increase to ~41% from ~30% now. Nevertheless, with a project debt funding of Rs 11bn-12bn (of Rs 17.2bn project cost), we expect the company’s D/E to touch 1.3:1 by FY15-end. High cost efficiency: ORCMNT is amongst the most efficient cement midcaps owing to (1) its lower lead distance to market (~300km) as its strategic plant locations ensure coverage of the southern (30%)/western (65%)/other markets (5%), thus capitalising on the best pricing scenario across regions; (2) proximity to limestone/ coal mines and; (3) a PPC mix of 73-74% (>industry avg.). With utilisation in the southern region set to touch 68% in FY17 from 57% in FY14, a resultant improvement in pricing should boost its EBITDA/t. Initiate with BUY: ORCMNT has run up ~135% in the market rally of last 4 months and on expectations of the sector’s cyclical recovery, and now trades at 6.4x FY16E/ 4.2x FY17E EV/EBITDA. We expect topline/EBITDA/PAT CAGR of 26%/52%/51% over FY14-FY17 led by higher volumes and margins. We initiate coverage on ORCMNT with a BUY and a Sep’15 TP of Rs 135 (6.5x 1year fwd. EV/EBITDA).

Dolat Capital calls a ‘Buy’ on Mphasis CMP: Rs. 415

Target Rs. 585

Deal wins traction on: Mphasis continue to see strong demand in the BCM vertical primarily in the GRC (Governance, risk and compliance) segment wherein it has bagged couple of deals and is in transition at the moment. Some of these deals has come from its focus twelve key accounts and should start contributing Q2FY15 onwards. Focused sales effort is paying off in the named account approach, in terms of their potential scalability and their vendor strategy (Mphasis is rated top vendor in two of its five large accounts). It has closed couple of deals in 10-30mn$ of TCV, these deals are fresh investments by banks and are new projects, thus taking longer than usual in discussions. It is also chasing two 50mn$+ deals and should add these to the run rate by Q3FY14. HP pain extend: It is witnessing some deal momentum in the HP channel driven by better win ratio by HP Inc among its client portfolio as some of these are increasing the scope of work for HP and is thus Mphasis is gaining on the outsourcing component. However, the exit rate for non-renewal remains very high thus leading to further decline in revenues. Revenues are likely to decline sequentially by 5-6% in Q1FY15. Digital Risk to be soft in H1: Digital Risk revenues are likely to be soft in H1 as indicated in Q4 call owing to some project completions in forensics and weak demand for origination and mortgage processing. However, it may pick up sharply in H2 as some of the large deal won would start scale up meaningfully at that time. It has indicated about 15% revenue decline for the quarter and flattish Q2, however we believe the revenues may pick up sharply in H2 primarily on volume drive in existing clients and potential cross-sell from some of the existing BCM clients it is in discussion with. Mature market ex- DR to be up marginally: The revenues in MM outside DR may report growth of about 1-2% and this run rate may gain momentum as the year progresses given its recent wins and overall improved success ratio. OPM to improve: OPM is likely to improve in FY15 by over 120bps despite Fx (INR/USD at 60) and wage hike challenges as it would benefits from several tailwinds such as lower hedge losses (just INR 80mn in Q1 @60 INR/USD), absence on provisioning on India business (INR 550mn) and lean delivery benefits (to contribute about 70-80bps on shared saving basis). View: We believe the sustained traction in the direct channel revenues (strong deal and client adds on LTM basis) would cover up for decline in the HP revenue streams given the declining client concentration risk (36% in exit quarter and would go to 25% by FY16) and would help gain in profitability on improved revenue mix. We maintain our positive view on the stock given improved financial and relative economical valuations with a TP of ` 585 valued at 12x FY16E earnings (5% higher than its current TMF discounting). n a relief to the automobile and consumer durable sectors, the government has extended the excise duty concession by six months to December 31. The government had cut excise duty on cars, SUVs and two-wheelers as well as consumer durables in the Interim Budget in February to help the industry tide over a demand slump. The concessions were valid till June 30 and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has announced the extension till the year end. "Considering the present situation in various sectors, the government today has decided to extend the facility of this reduced excise

duty to all those sections for a further period of six months till December 31, 2014," he told reporters yesterday. Excise duty on small cars, scooters, motorcycles and commercial vehicles will continue at 8% from 12% previously. The factory gate duty on SUVs stands at the reduced rate of 24% as against 30%. The duty on large cars will continue at 24% compared with 27% earlier, while the duty on mid-sized cars will stand at 20% from 24%. “We are certain that the extension of the reduced Excise Duty will contribute positively to improve the buyer sentiment and would help in bringing about a sustained recovery in the automotive industry that

has been languishing for over two years now. This will go a long way in bringing back growth, investments in the industry as well as encourage higher employment. On behalf of the entire automotive sector, I would like to thank Government for their very timely and supportive role”, said Vikram Kirloskar, President, SIAM. Excise duty on capital goods and consumer durables will continue to attract a lower duty of 10% as against the pre-budget rate of 12%. Asked about the loss of revenue due to the extension of these concessions, Jaitley said the short-term loss will benefit the economy in the long run.

India’s Economic Confidence Shoots Up Becomes fourth most economically confident country after Saudi Arabia, Germany and China, says Ipsos report By A Business Reporter

T

he formation of a "businessfriendly" government has made India the most optimistic country economically, looking ahead six months, says a report. As many as 60% Indians surveyed have predicted that domestic economy would be stronger in the next six months, placing it at the top of the 25 nation-list compiled by global research firm Ipsos. Besides, India's economic confidence shot up by 6 points to 66% in May compared to the previous month, making it the fourth most economically confident country after Saudi Arabia, Ger-

many and China. Saudi Arabia led on the parameter with 87 % of its people surveyed being optimistic about their economy. Canada was behind India at the fifth place with 65% economically confident citizens. "India's economic confidence has got a major boost primarily due to a landslide victory of the business-friendly government led by Narendra Modi, who has vowed to boost growth, control inflation and restore investor confidence," the Ipsos report said. The survey conducted among 19,242 people in 25 countries, also found that Indians, for the first time, emerged at the top for being

the most optimistic about the economic growth for the coming six months. India is followed by Brazil at second rank, Saudi Arabia (3rd), Indonesia (4th) and China (5th), in this category. "All the data points in the Ipsos report indicate India's economic confidence has shot up substantially, which is also corroborated by the fact that India's current account deficit has significantly eased, the currency has stabilised, inflation has substantially pulled back, stock market has had a dream run so far and corporate earnings are improving," Ipsos India CEO Mick Gordon said. "However, recent high food inflation, conflict in oil-producing Iraq and the fear of a below normal monsoon is big challenge for the new government," Gordon added.

BUSINESS BRIEFS Additional Penalty Of USD 578 Million On RIL?

The government plans to impose an additional penalty of USD 578 million on Reliance Industries for producing less-than-targeted natural gas from its eastern offshore KG-D6 block. The penalty in the form of disallowing costs incurred on the field will be for missing the target in 2013-14, a government source said. With this, the total costs disallowed will increase to USD 2.375 billion. The government had previously issued a notice to RIL disallowing a total of USD 1.797 billion in costs for falling short of production during 2010-11 (USD 457 million), 2011-12 (USD 548 million) and 2012-13 (USD 792 million). RIL, which disputed the levy and initiated arbitration against the government, did not respond to an e-mail seeking comment. "A note is being put to Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for disallowing cost recovery of USD 578 million in 2013-14. A notice will be sent to RIL once he approves it," he said.

Unions Oppose EPFO Funds In Equity Market

Trade unions have decided to oppose any move to invest part of over Rs 5 lakh crore corpus of retirement fund body Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) in equity markets. The unions' reaction came following reports in a section of media stating that the Finance Ministry has drafted a new investment pattern for non-government provident funds, superannuation funds and gratuity funds which will allow parking up to 30% corpus in equity market including exchange traded funds and index funds. "Earlier we have opposed any investment by EPFO in equity market. We will oppose it again as it is poor workers money," All India General Secretary of Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh Virjesh Upadhyay told PTI.

American brands top domestic retail space in the F&B space, while the Italian and British labels dominate the luxury segment By A Business Reporter

"A

23

n analysis of top 300 global retail brands by their country-of-origin reveals that American brands account for the bulk of global retailers present in the country," industry research firm CBRE South Asia chairman Anshuman Magazine said. CBRE recently studied over 300 prominent global retailer brands to identify operating trends, expansion strategies, and extent of penetration across leading cities. Comprising nearly 30% of total brands analysed for the study, most American retailers are present in the mass market food and beverage (F&B) category in the country. On the other hand, retailers from Italy and Britain, account for about 19 and 16 % respectively of the total share of global brands analysed and

are largely into luxury segment, with brands such as Hermes, Chanel and Fendi. A segment-wise focus on the brands originally from the US, Italy and Britain revealed that most belonged to the fashion and apparel, and F&B segments. While most brands originating in the US and Britain have a wider presence in the fashion and apparel segment, in the luxury space, around 60 % are Italian brands, the report said. American brands have a dominant positioning the F&B category with brands such as McDonald's, KFC and Subway. Additionally, Spanish retailers, particularly Mango and Zara, have made a major impact on fashion trends since their entry into the country and have been steadily expanding their retail footprint across smaller cities, added the report.

The event saw a performance from children from Shiamak Davar's Victory Arts Foundation who paid tribute to Aamir Khan's show 'Satyameva Jayate'. The 49-year-old actor was honoured for his contribution to social causes but since he does not accept awards, he was instead given a packet of sweets.

Bachchan remembers Manna Dey

The late legendary singer Manna Dey who mesmerised the entire nation with his voice left his admirers in a state of shock with his demise. One such die-hard fan is another megastar of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan, who loves listening to Manna Dey. Bachchan was deeply moved by his favourite singer’s death and on the day he was also shooting for his upcoming finite series 'Yudh' soon to be seen on Sony Entertainment Television. While Bachchan looked visibly low, he requested the entire crew to observe a twominute silence in remembrance of Manna Dey. In fact the entire day he was also seen talking quietly to various co-artists of some very fond memories of the great singer!

After being appreciated for a negative role in a huge hit like ‘Ram Leela’ what made you accept this comedy show? I am an actor and whatever work I like, I am ready to do and with SAB TV, I have old relations and so I immediately said yes to this funny show.

This TV series shall explore the funny side of the incidents that take place in the daily lives of all the characters in a comical manner. One of the many USPs of this fictional comedy show is the presence of live audience on the sets which adds the element of spontaneity to the entire humorous offering.

What is your character in the show? I play a mysterious aunt (mausi) who comes down to join this joint family from somewhere North and then what happens is the gist of my character. I have the Northern dialect to speak along with the mannerisms. I have a substantial role.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JUNE 26, 2014

ONDON: Defending champion Andy Murray handed out a tough Wimbledon lesson to Slovenian grasscourt rookie Blaz Rola on Wednesday as Li Na and Venus Williams struck early blows for the thirty-somethings. Murray, the third seed, coasted to a 6-1, 6-1, 6-0 mauling of 23-yearold Rola who was playing just the 10th match of his career having only graduated from university in Ohio last year. The British star eased to victory in just 84 minutes, hitting seven aces and 27 winners against the world number 92 and goes on to face either Jan Hernych of the Czech Republic or Spanish 27th seed Roberto Bautista Agut for a place in the last 16. "It's his first year on grass so it was tough for him. But he has a good game and he'll keep improving," said Murray. "I took care of my serve for the majority of the match and I played well. If you can finish matches as quick as possible then that's better in the long run." French Open semi-finalist Ernests Gulbis became the highest ranked man to lose so far when the 12th seed went down to Sergiy Stakhovsky of the Ukraine, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7/5). Stakhovksy, who shocked Roger Federer in the second round in 2013, next faces either France's Jeremy Chardy or Australia's Marinko

Andy Murray hits a forehand during his second round match against rookie Blaz Rola. Murray won the match 6-1, 6-1, 6-0 . Matosevic. The colourful Gulbis then denied he had lost all of his $500,000 winnings from the French Open in a Riga casino. "I went to play blackjack, but there was no word how much I won or how much I lost. They (reporters) asked me how much I lost. I said, A lot. I was joking," he said. "Next day in Latvia they say I lost all my winnings. My mother sends me a message next day asking am I

crazy. I may be but I'm not stupid." Australian Open champion Li Na, a three-time quarter-finalist at the All England Club, swept to a 6-2, 62 victory over Austria's Yvonne Meusburger, hitting 33 winners to just four from the world number 38. Second seed Li, 32, goes on to face Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic. She said she was unconcerned about her 21 unforced errors. "If you want to play more aggressive, this is the normal way," she

explained. Five-time champion Williams, 34, and playing in her 17th Wimbledon, defeated pintsized Japanese Kurumi Nara 7-6 (7/4), 6-1 in a battle of little and large on Court 3. The American, who is the oldest woman left in the draw, stands at an imposing 1.85m (6ft 1in) compared to Nara's 1.55m (5ft 1n) and the difference in stature -- both physical and sporting -- eventually told despite the world number 41 breaking early in both sets. Williams will face 2011 champion Petra Kvitova in the third round if the Czech sixth seed beats Germany's Mona Barthel. "Feeling good getting into the next round," said Williams. "I think we both play a similar game, really go for it and she's one of the kind of players that can get really hot and every time she plays me, she plays really well, so I have to be ready for that." Polish fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska, the 2012 runner-up, also went through with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Australia's Casey Dellacqua and next meets either Portuguese qualifier Michelle Larcher de Brito or Australia's Jarmila Gajdosova. Later Wednesday, top seed Novak Djokovic takes on Czech veteran Radek Stepanek for a place in the last 32 hoping to avoid the fate suffered by his coach Boris Becker in 1987. The German legend, who captured three Wimbledon titles in his career, is the only top seed in the history of the tournament to lose in the second round when he was beaten by Peter Doohan 27 years ago.

Football looking for a right ‘header’ By Hardik Sampat

M

UMBAI: As the World Cup is progressing to the final sixteen, the aura around the city maidans distinctly sports the football flavour. With the rain gods still to deliver its goods to the city, lads indulge in games of footy on most of the maidans, which are usually teeming with budding cricketers. Goan coach Milind Parsekar and former Xaverite Roshan Fernandes are two individuals who have been constantly nurturing talent at the Oval Maidan every evening. They have a group of young enthusiasts who practice under them performing rigorous drills and show-casing their dribbling techniques, which have been picked up by the lads courtesy the ongoing World Cup. Parsekar has been coaching since the past two decades and was earlier employed with Bombay International School and is now assoicated with the Aditya Birla World Academy at Tardeo. An avid follower of the game, Parsekar was caught off guard when was asked to choose his favourite

side who would win the championship in Brazil. “Picking a squad who will triumph is very difficultsince they all are well prepared and all the teams are so very good. Netherlands shocked us all against Spain.” He hasn't been able to watch all the games since his aged parents are in town and he wants to spend as much time with them as possible apart from that the matches which are scheduled to start early in the morning hinder his work routine. Both of them press for a higher level of athleticism and skill as most children grow up to idolize the greats like Messi and Ronaldo and aim to replicate their achievements. Unconventional as it may appear, they have adopted the traditional Indian sport of 'gilli-danda' to improve the handeye co-ordination of the pupils enrolled in their coaching camp. They also lament the lack of infrastructure the city has. “There is a lack of infrastructure facilities and physiotherapists despite having good coaches and grounds to play. Children are bursting with talent but they require good direction,” said Milind. “Football is a skilful game. Unlike

Roshan Fernandes keeps a watchful eye as the children train at the Oval Maidan. [INSET] Coach Milind Parsekar. other nations where the children are mentored since childhood it is not the case here. Getting in to district levels is tough and the national team is a distant dream due to the lack of grooming,” added Fernandes.

When asked what style of play Indians should adapt, Fernandes believed in the South American way of playing the game. “Indian conditions and body type fail to meet with the tall built of the European nations.”

Saina, Sindhu advance; Saina to face Thulasi in round two S

YDNEY: Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal fought her way back from a game down to win her opening round match, while compatriot P V Sindhu crushed her opponent to storm into the second round of the USD 750,000 Star Australian Super Series here. Saina will now take on compatriot P C Thulasi, who hardly had to break a sweat to overcome USA's Jamie Subandhi 21-16 2118 in another women's singles first round match. World No. 9 Saina, seeded sixth in the tournament, lost the first game, but rallied in a fine fashion to beat her unseeded Chinese rival Sun Yu 22-24 21-17 21-10 in her opening round match that lasted an hour and 15 minutes. The first round was a neck-and-neck battle and till 2222 it could have been anyone's game, but it was the Chinese who won two crucial points to snatch it 24-22 in the end. In the second game, the Indian started off brilliantly, surging ahead with a 8-0 lead before the Chinese fought back and managed to catch her at 13-13. It was a tense battle for some time to follow, but eventually Saina managed to have the last laugh. The decider turned out to be a cake walk for India's Olympic bronze medallist shuttler. Eighth seeded Sindhu, meanwhile, had an easy outing against her unseeded Japanese opponent Aya Ohori, who she defeated 21-16 21-14 in just 31 minutes to set up a second round clash with Nichaon Jindapon of Thailand. It was a mixed results for the Indians in the men's singles first round, as World no. 77 B Sai Praneeth brushed aside local shuttler Hoe Keat Oon 21-7 21-11, but HS Pranoy crashed out of the tournament after losing 14-2118-21 to eighth seeded German Marc Zwiebler. Praneeth will square up with Chinese sixth seed Zhengming Wang . Meanwhile, it was a bad day for the Indian doubles pairs as five of them became first round victims. The lone Indian pair to cross the first round hurdle was men's doubles duo of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Akshay Dewalkar.

GREEKS COAST PAST ‘IVORYMEN’ Greece advances after late penalty by Samaras

F

ORTALEZA: Georgios Samaras scored an injury-time penalty to put Greece into the second round of the World Cup with a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast on Tuesday. Samaras was adjudged to have been tripped in the area by substitute Giovanni Sio, and calmly slotted in the spot kick for a win that puts Greece through to the knockout stage. Ivory Coast would have advanced with a draw. "This means so much to me, to us ... Tonight we had energy," Samaras said, dedicating the win to Greeks suffering through financial crisis. "We really hope we can make

the people happy back home. We are a team. A team, that's it." The Greeks had taken the lead just before halftime through substitute Andreas Samaris, but substitute Wilfried Bony equalised for Ivory Coast in the 74th, beating goalkeeper Pangiotis Glykos from close range after being set up by Gervinho. That goal looked like it would put the Africans through until the late drama. Samaras met a cross in the area and went to shoot with his left leg, which got caught against the leg of Sio. Samaras' foot then hit the ground and he

fell to the turf, drawing a penalty. With his country's hopes on the line, Samaras sent his spot kick past goalkeeper Boubacar Barry, who guessed the right way but couldn't keep the ball out. Ibrahim. The Ivorians wore black armbands as a sign of mourning. Greece, which had failed to score in the previous two Group C matches, finished second in Group C with four points, behind winner Colombia with nine. Ivory Coast had three and Japan one. Greece had not scored in its first two games in Brazil, but missed a handful of scoring chances against Ivory Coast, hitting the crossbar twice with shots from distance. The Greeks were also forced to make two early substitutions after valuable midfielder Pangiotis Kone and goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis were injured in the first half.

Colombia boot Japan out of World Cup C

UIABA (Brazil): Jackson Martinez scored twice as Colombia beat Japan 4-1 to end World Cup Group C with three straight wins and send the Asian champions packing from the tournament with just a single point. The match made World Cup history when Farid Mondragan beat Roger Milla's record as the oldest player at any finals tournament. The goalkeeper came on as a substitute for the last six minutes at the age of 43 years and three days. Colombia already had the game sealed. Disaster struck for Japan after 15 minutes when Yasuyuki Konna chopped down Adrian Ramos in the penalty area. Portuguese referee Pedro Proenca pointed to the spot and Fiorentina striker Juan Cuadrado confidently fired the kick past Japanese goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima. Japan had chances.

AC Milan's Keisuke Honda after 35 minutes but his curled a left-footed free kick over effort went spectacularly the wall but the ball went just high. However, he met with better fortune in time wide of the Colombian goal. German-based striker Shinji added on in the first-half with a Okazaki tried an overhead kick fine diving header.

After 55 minutes, substitute Rodriguez found Martinez in space on the edge of the penalty area and the Porto striker powered a low angled shot into the corner. Even then, Japan did not give up. Honda fired a powerful long range free kick at Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina. Defender Yasuyuki Konno also beat the Colombia defence with a shot from the edge of the area that Ospina covered. But Martinez added a second and Rodriguez tormented the Japanese defence before chipping the ball over Kawashima to seal victory.

FORTALEZA (BRAZIL): Sabri Lamouchi resigned as Ivory Coast coach minutes after his side's hopes of reaching the World Cup second round were dashed by a late penalty giving Greece a 2-1 victory in Fortleza. Greece took a place in the last 16 and Lamouchi said he had to draw the consequences of that failure. "My contract comes to an end at this World Cup and there will be no epilogue and you can understand well as to why," said the 42-year-old Frenchman yesterday. "It is logical as we did not do well at last year's Africa Cup of Nations or at the World Cup finals." The former France international, whose side started with a 2-1 win over Japan before losing by that scoreline to group winners Colombia, said a lot of hard work had gone into securing the Elephants first ever appearance in the second round. "I have put a lot of time and effort into the past two years but unfortunately my story with Ivory Coast ends this evening," he said.

Girls fight for spot in Brazil’s ‘jogo bonito’

SAO PAULO: At the foot of a Sao Paulo slum, 10 girls played a football game in a cold gym, fighting for goals and acceptance in Brazil's male-dominated sport. While the country's attention is on the World Cup and Brazil star forward Neymar, the girls of the Rosinha favela quietly dream of getting equal treatment in the land of the "jogo bonito" (beautiful game). Ana Julia de Souza, 12, chose football shorts over a ballet tutu even though her father does not approve. "My dad doesn't like it very much when I come here. He wants me to go to ballet lessons," she said. "But I prefer to play football." Souza's favorite players are Brazil's David Luiz, Marcelo and Hulk, and she hopes her heros can lift a sixth World Cup trophy. A growing number of Brazilian women are learning the art of dribbling and tackling, and more than 5,000 are playing in local championships.

Thailand arrests over 1,000 in World Cup betting crackdown

BANGKOK: Thai police have arrested more than 1,000 people, including four foreigners, in a crackdown on illegal betting during the football World Cup. The arrests come amid a wider blitz on gambling by the new junta in a bid to "uphold social order" in Thailand, where betting is largely banned with locals restricted to gambling only on the state lottery or at a handful of horse racing meetings. "Since the World Cup began we have arrested 1,023 people for illegal gambling on matches, the majority of whom are punters," said Police Major General Chantavit Ramsut. Police also seized betting slips worth USD 525,000 during raids since the World Cup kicked off on June 12, he added. On Tuesday the police and military officials arrested four foreign nationals -- the first non-residents captured so far in the crackdown -- on suspicion of illegal betting at a sauna in downtown Bangkok, Chantavit said.

NOTORIOUS WC EPISODES

BATTLE OF BERNE Brazil were at the centre of a notorious brawl in Switzerland in 1954, when their quarter-final against Hungary became immortalised as the "Battle of Berne." The result, a 4-2 victory for Hungary, has become a footnote of a match which is a strong contender for the dirtiest game in World Cup history. The match was marred by three sendings off and several mass brawls, and was interrupted by several invasions from Brazilian officials and media.

SCHUMACHER'S NIGHT OF SHAME To say that German goalkeeper Harald 'Toni' Schumacher left an indelible imprint on the 1982 tournament would be an understatement. The curly-haired net-minder became a hate figure in the 58th minute of the semi-final with France with the match level at 1-1 when substitute Patrick Battiston had just shot at goal only for Schumacher to charge and elbow him deliberately in the head. Battiston slumped unconscious to the ground and required minutes of treatment. Battiston was stretchered off the pitch accompanied by his close friend Michel Platini. He suffered three broken teeth and a damaged vertebra. "Tell him I'll pay for the crowns," was Schumacher's unrepentant response after the match.

'HAND OF GOD' STRIKES DOWN THE LAND OF 'GOD SAVE THE QUEEN' The 1986 World Cup was all about Diego Maradona, the very good and the very bad side of him. Both were seen in the quarter-final against England, the very good being his extraordinary individual goal that put them 2-0 up in a game they would win 2-1. However, his first goal is equally as famous but for all the wrong reasons as somehow he managed to beat the far taller England goalkeeper Peter Shilton in the air and the ball went into the net.

FIFA charges Luis Suarez for biting in World Cup

R

IO DE JANEIRO: FIFA has officially charged Uruguay's Luis Suarez for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini in the teams' World Cup match, a process that could lead to a suspension for Uruguay's best offensive player. FIFA announced that its disciplinary committee has opened proceedings against Suarez, just hours after the end of yesterday's match. If the panel finds Suarez guilty of assaulting an opponent, FIFA rules call for a ban of at least two matches up to a maximum

of 24 months. FIFA asked the team to present evidence, which can include video recordings, by 2000 GMT today. A decision must be published before Saturday, when Uruguay plays Colombia in a round-of-16 match at Maracana stadium. Uruguay advanced by beating Italy 1-0 yesterday in Natal. One minute before the decisive goal, Suarez clashed with Chiellini and was caught by television cameras apparently biting his shoulder. Match referee Marco Rodriguez of Mexico appeared not to see the incident and took no action. Brazil's World Cup has been a high-scoring tournament featuring late goals, comebacks,

Earlier in his career, the 27year-old Suarez was suspended in the Netherlands and England for biting opponents. He didn't confirm or deny biting Chiellini, but said he was angry that the Italian defender had hit him in the eye during the game. "These are things that happen on the pitch, we were both in the area, he thrust his shoulder into me," Suarez said in Spanish. "These things happen on the pitch, and we don't have to give them so much (importance)." FIFA's disciplinary panel "is

Ghost of the past looms over US, Germany R

ECIFE (BRAZIL): (AFP) The spectre of one of the most infamous episodes in World Cup history looms over Germany and the United States as they clash tomorrow for a place in the last 16. The two teams each have four points heading into their final Group G match and a draw here would see both qualify at the expense of Portugal and Ghana, who play in Brasilia. The sense of intrigue has been heightened by the fact that Germany coach Joachim Loew and the United States' boss Jurgen Klinsmann are old friends. The match scenario has evoked memories of a notorious 1982 World Cup game between Austria and West Germany. That match in the Spanish city of Gijon ended in controversy after the two sides effectively conspired to secure a 1-0 victory for the Germans, allowing them to qualify ahead of Algeria. The shockwaves from that encounter continue to be felt today. FIFA subsequently changed the rules, ordering that all final games in the group phase of the World Cup should kick-off simultae-

Press conferences for Germany and the United States this week have been littered with references to the 1982 scandal, with Klinsmann forcefully rejecting any suggestion of an arrangement this time. "You're talking about a game that is decades ago," Klinsmann said when asked about the match known as the "Disgrace of Gijon." "That is only a part of Germany's history and not part of the

United States' history. I think if you look at the past of the US team, we always try to make things happen," Klinsmann added. "We have that fighting spirit, and we give everything in every game. We will go to Recife and we will give everything to beat Germany. That is our goal." Germany's coaching staff and players also dismiss repeated questions about the possibility of anything untoward.

responsible for sanctioning serious infringements which have escaped the match officials' attention," the governing body said in a statement. "Any type of proof may be produced," FIFA noted, including "reports from referees, declarations from the parties and witnesses, material evidence, audio or video recordings." FIFA set a World Cup precedent for using video review in 1994. Then, in a quarterfinal, Italy defender Mauro Tassotti's elbow to the face of Spain's Luis Enrique escaped the referee's attention. FIFA later banned Tassotti for eight international matches.

Italy post-mortem launched by scathing Prandelli

NATAL (BRAZIL): The postmortem into Italy's second consecutive World Cup humiliation was launched in scathing fashion by coach Cesare Prandelli, who has called for sweeping reforms to save the "disliked" Azzurri after resigning from his post. For the second successive edition, four-time champions Italy will not be playing a fourth match at the World Cup after a 1-0 defeat by Uruguay yesterday sent the South Americans through with Group D winners Costa Rica. Prandelli resigned immediately and, in surreal scenes following the match in Natal, Italian football federation (FIGC) president Giancarlo Abete followed suit. "I will not go back on my decision," said the dapper 56year-old Italian coach, rebutting Abete's claim he would try to change Prandelli's mind.

Messi inspires Argentina to narrow win over Nigeria; Both Argentina and Nigeria advance

P

ORTO ALEGRE (Brazil) :Argentina secured top spot in Group F and preserved their unblemished record at Brazil 2014 with a 3-2 win over Nigeria illuminated by braces for Lionel Messi and Ahmed Musa. Alejandro Sabella's side will be joined in the Round of 16 by the Super Eagles, who contributed greatly to this enthralling match and progress due to Iran's defeat to alreadyeliminated Bosnia and Herzegovina. Even in a World Cup packed full of thrilling games, this was one of the best yet, and the tone was set as early as the third minute. That was when Messi opened the scoring in some style, crashing a first-time shot into the roof of the net from 12 yards after Vincent Enyeama had tipped Angel Di Maria's initial effort on to the post. Nigeria, though, weren't

content to allow Argentina's captain to again hog the headlines, and they drew level with the next attack of the game. The impressive Ahmed Musa was the player responsible, exploiting a one-on-one with Pablo Za-

baleta to cut inside from the left and curl an inch-perfect right-foot shot just inside the far post. It was a terrific goal from a player who would continue to cause problems, although it was Argentina who carved out the better of the game's opportunities. Di Maria was again prominent, and on 25 minutes he measured an inviting low pass across goal that Messi sliding in - missed out on converting by a matter of

inches. Soon after, the Real Madrid winger went directly for goal, unleashing a 35yard drive that was flying into the bottom corner until Enyeama got across to tip it wide. It wasn't long, though, before Messi again took centre stage. A minute into first-half injury time, and having forced a brilliant save from the keeper with an earlier free-kick, he re-established La Albiceleste's lead from an almost-identical position. This time, there was no chance for Enyeama, with the Barcelona star curling a left-foot shot from 25 yards that cleared the wall and dropped just inside the post. But once again, Nigeria wasted little time in responding to Messi's brilliance. Just a couple of minutes into the second half, Musa emulated the Argentina skipper by completing a double of his own, racing through and wrong-footing Sergio Romero with a low shot into the bottom-left corner.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was invited by Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff to watch the World Cup football final next month, will not be attending the sporting event. “I understand that there are no plans for the Prime Minister to be present at the football FIFA final," the Spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs told reporters here. Modi is expected to travel to Brazil for a summit of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) countries which will be held between July 15 and 17 in the city of Fortaleza. The World Cup final will be held in Rio de Janeiro on July 13. Given the proximity of the two events, the BRICS leaders were invited by Brazil to the football final. Rousseff had last week invited Modi to watch the FIFA World Cup final.
