hile the IMD's predictions regarding rainfall have been going awry, the water levels in the lakes have already reached their optimum level. The IMD had earlier predicted occasional, light showers, but since last two days, no rainfall was seen in the city. When ADC contacted the IMD, the officials said there will be few spells of rains and showers across the city and suburbs. Maximum temperature will be 32 degree celsius and minimum 27 degree celsius. The BMC has also forecasted intermittent showers in the city and suburbs. A total of 40 complaints of fallen trees registered with the civic body. The water in Powai lake is overflowing while Tansa, Modak Sagar, Vihar and other major sources of water to Mumbai have been filled abundantly. In 2014, the lakes had received 1,41,049 litres, while this year the lakes have received 3,14,723 litres. There has been no rainfall in the last two days despite various predictions and forecasts. Three more months of monsoon still remain to determine whether the lake levels will have enough water for the city throughout the year, considering the fact that water sometimes evaporates if it Continued on pg 8 «

condition that causes skin to lose its pigmentation or colour. Current treatments, such as steroid creams and light therapy, are not reliably effective in reversing the disease. Recent advances in vitiligo research led investigators from the Yale School of Medicine in US to consider an existing class of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved medications known as Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, as a possible treatment. Last year, Dr Brett King, assistant professor of dermatology and principal investigator of the research, broke new ground when he published a paper demonstrating the effectiveness of the JAK inhibitor tofacitinib citrate in treating hair loss caused by alopecia areata. King and co-author Dr Brittany Craiglow, believed the same medicine might be effective for vitiligo. To test the hypothesis, King and Craiglow administered tofacitinib to a 53-year-old patient with prominent white spots covering her face, hands, and body. For more than a year prior to taking tofacitinib, the numbers of these white spots had been increasing.

Why parrots are great vocal imitators - found Scientists, including one of Indian-origin, have found key structural differences in the brains of parrots that may explain the birds' unparallelled ability to imitate sounds and human speech. These brain structures had gone unrecognised in studies published over the last 34 years, researchers said. By examining gene expression patterns, the new study found that parrot brains are structured differently than the brains of songbirds and hummingbirds, which also exhibit vocal learning. In addition to having defined centres in the brain that control vocal learning called 'cores,' parrots have what the scientists call 'shells,' or outer rings, which are also involved in vocal learning. The shells are relatively bigger in species of parrots that are well known for their ability to imitate human speech, the

researchers found. This finding opens up a huge avenue of research in parrots, in trying to understand how parrots are processing the information necessary to copy novel sounds and what are the mechanisms that underlie imitation of human speech sounds. Parrots are one of the few animals considered 'vocal learners,' meaning they can imitate sounds. Researchers have been trying to figure out why some bird species are better imitators than others.

Now, Cong link to chikki scam

Afternoon Despatch & Courier

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JUNE 26, 2015

By A Special Correspondent

T

he Rs 206 crore scam involving purchase of chikki and other items supplied to Anganwadi students under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) yesterday took a new twist with reports surfacing of alleged Congress link to the scam. According to sources, the contract for supply of poor quality Suryakanta Chikki was awarded to M K Gawde who is the sole contractor proudly boasts of being an active Congress worker from Vengurla in Sindhudurg district. Gawde who runs the Suryakanta Sahakari Mahila Sanstha (SSMS) argued that the government's rule of floating tenders for an item worth more than Rs 3 lakh was not practical in chikki’s case. He argued that he had to bear the transport cost too along with the production

cost. He added that they had to transport chikki to far away places like Chandrapur and hence they need to produce maximum quantity to make it economically viable. He further added that in order to transport the Chikki they need to spend more than Rs 3 lakh for that. Gawde disclosed that they had tried to convince this to Radhika Rastogi who was then head of purchase department but she was adamant on following the rule. Hence in this case they had no alternative other than going by the rate contract system, Gawde added. Rastogi had stayed the chikki purchase in June 2013 rejecting the rate contract system. She had advised the government to call for a tender. Gawde denied that SSMS had given sub contracts for manufacturing chikki. He argued that SSMS had its own manufacturing plant in Vengurla. However, he admitted

Sachin Sawant that there were several complaints about the chikki’s quality. Gawde stated that they had sent their representatives to the places from where the complaints were received to rectify the mistakes. He further disclosed that the products prepared by SSMS were air tight and that they can last more than four months.

Meanwhile in a statement released here, Leader of Opposition in Legislative Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil (Congress) accused Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis of misleading the state over the ICDS Anganwdi items purchase scam. Demanding the resignation of Minister for Women and Child Development Pankaja Munde-Palwe, he said that the Chief Minister while speaking to private television news channels had announced that the process of purchasing items in excess of Rs 1 crore was being discontinued from April 1. However, the government by way of Government Resolution (GR) issued on November 26, 2014 had ruled that all purchases in excess of Rs 3 lakhs will have to be done through e-Tendering process. Vikhe-Patil contended that the Women and Child Development department had

clearly flouted the rule set in the November 2014 GR. Commenting upon the willingness of Minister for Women and Child Development Pankaja Munde-Palwe to face any probe, he said that if she continues to be the minister during the probe then the probe itself cannot be free and fair and hence should step down from her cabinet post. Commenting upon the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) issuing notice to principal secretary Women and Child Development Sanjay Kumar, Sawant remarked that the Congress was disappointed with the ACB action as it was seeking clarification from the same person. He added that the Congress had demanded a probe of all the concerned departments. Sawant further remarked that the Chief Minister is now giving clean chit to all his ministers.

And if it happened so, Jamiat Ulama will take part in the case as an interferer and we will fight this out thoroughly.” Salian had told the newspaper, that the meaning (of the message from the government) “is very clear — don’t get us favourable orders. Unfavourable orders are invited - that goes against the society. For a layman or a fresh prosecutor it’s very difficult - one cannot do anything. May be they want to loosen it and ultimately lose the case because they can’t withdraw it.” Reacting to this, Azmi further added that the candidness of Salian and her resignation from public pros-

ecutor post to protect the law, has “proved that the conscience of just and secular national brethren is still alive and we congratulate them. The officers of national investigating agency (NIA) harassed her so much that she had to resign from public prosecution. NIA officers want saffron terrorists to get relief in Malegaon 2008 bomb blast case and their investigation is afoot on that way. As per the interview of Rohini Salian to an English newspaper before 26/11, late Hemant Karkare was honestly probing into the case and meanwhile he was consulting with public prosecutor Rohini Salian. In addition, Rohini Salian was sending the report to the

then Home Minister in which he never interfered. But since the new government has come, Rohini Salian has been told to go soft on the accused. Disheartened by the same, Rohini Salian stepped down. Salian also said in the interview that the NIA personnel too are being pressurized by the government to do so. “Everything was well before the present government came to power and the case was being impartially probed. In days gone by, the Supreme Court of India had said in one of its directives that the MCOCA Act does not apply to the accused arrested in the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast case as investigating agencies had not placed their stance well before the court which has paved their way for bail.”

Sawant stated that as per rules the contract should have been allotted to contractors who produce such items on their own rather than outsource it. He added that the Nagpur division bench of the Bombay High Court had ruled that contracts worth in excess of Rs 3 lakh should not be issued using Rate Contract system and instead e-Tendering process should be followed. The Women and Children Development Department (WCDD) headed by Pankaja Munde-Palwe on February 13 had awarded contract to SSMS for Rs 80 crore to provide chikki to around 15,426 Anganwadis in the state. She did not invite e-tenders as per the rules but selected the NGO on the basis of the rate contract system. Meanwhile the ACB has sought information from Principal Secretary of the Women and Children Development Department Sanjay Kumar on the issue of the purchase by the department. ACB chief Praveen Dixit said that his department has sought the details in the purchase and its procedure. Principal Secretary Sanjay Kumar confirmed the development. Lalit Modi keeps dodging probe agencies with threat to life excuse?

ven as the former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi is in the news about getting assistance in travelling abroad by two heavyweights of the Narendra Modi government, a pertinent question arises: what has kept Lalit Modi away from appearing before the investigating agencies? Lalit Kumar Modi has been giving the reason of threat to his life even though the security review has cleared that he did not have threat after his security was withdrawn post his visit from South Africa. A letter written by Mumbai police to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Income Tax Department (IT) intelligence unit on September 19, 2010 and September 22, 2010 respectively, states that Lalit gence inputs. The inputs had suggested Modi was provided police security on the basis of intelli- that Lalit Modi had threat to

his life from Dawood Ibrahim's D-Company. However Mumbai police had written letters to ED, Mumbai and IT (Intelligence), New Delhi that following the intelligence inputs from a central agency, Lalit Modi was being provided with police protection. The letter also states that the security was withdrawn as he was on a trip abroad but it would be resumed once he comes back to the country, but Lalit Modi never returned back to the country. In May 2010, Lalit Modi left

India for London on the grounds that there was a threat to his life from the DGang. Till this day, the former IPL commissioner has refused to appear before ED on the same grounds. The security agencies after a review had concluded there was no threat to his life, after November 2010, but last year when in the UK, Lalit Modi learned about Mumbai police chief Rakesh Maria being there for a conference and so his lawyer approached Maria and conveyed the message of

Modi wanting to meet Maria. However when the meeting came to light, Maria agreed that he met Modi and later in a press note mentioned about Modi informing him about the threat to his life from the underworld. When the information about the meeting was brought to Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis's notice, the CM sought a clarification from the top cop to which the CM has stated that he was satisfied with the reply from Maria's clarification, however

some points need further elaboration. Multiple summons by the investigation agencies have still kept Modi from appearing before the investigation agencies for five years now and the reason given by Modi remains as threat to his life. Whereas in an interview posted on Modi's website it once again says, “The Indian police has continuously told me yes, that the threat perception continues to be there and as and when I feel safe, I will go back to India.”

Two held for snatching bags containing Rs 57 lakh worth gold ornaments By Asif Rizvi

T

he Zone 2 of south Mumbai police nabbed two accused on Thursday for snatching and fleeing with bags containing gold ornaments. Two different cases had occurred between June 13 and June 15 in south Mumbai. In the first case a bag that contained 125 old ornaments costing about Rs 35 lakh was snatched from a gold dealer on June 13 whereas two days later a similar incident occurred when another businessman walking with a bag containing about Rs 23 lakh worth gold ornaments towards Metro cinema at JS road in south Mumbai was robbed in the same manner. An officer said, “The police realised the modus operandi

was similar in both the cases. The investigations were conducted and evidences including the nearby CCTV footages, the statements of the victims and witnesses were conducted.” Initially the the first case was registered at the LT Marg police station under section 379 and 34 of IPC whereas the second case was registered with the Azad Maidan police station under section 392 and 34 of IPC. The Zone 2 of Mumbai police initiated the inquiry in the case and several teams were formed to conduct the investigations. No scam by Pankaja Munde – CM Continued from pg 1

The Chief Minister said Munde, Minister for Women and Child Development, had sanctioned purchases in February this year as funds provided by the Centre under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) would have expired on March 31. He also said the norm of inviting e-tenders for purchases worth Rs three lakh and more was introduced by his government in April. Congress has accused Pankaja of flouting this norm by clearing purchases through Government Resolutions. Fadnavis said, "We will still go into the minute details and, if any discrepancy is found then, an Inquiry will be ordered." The Fadnavis government was yesterday hit by first major allegation of a 'scam' after Congress accused Pankaja, daughter of BJP stalwart late Gopinath Munde, of clearing purchases worth Rs 206 crore on February 13 through 24 Government Resolutions. A host of items including

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a meeting with Mahrashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in New Delhi on Thursday. snacks, mats, dishes, water filters, medicines and books for children were purchased under the Integrated Child Development Services by the Women and Child velopment Ministry. Congress leader Sachin Sawant had filed a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on the issue and former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan had even sought a CBI probe. Meanwhile, taking cognizance of the complaint, the ACB has sought a response from Women and Child De-

velopment (WCD) Department to the accusations levelled by Sawant. "We have received a letter from the ACB last evening where they have asked for information on the purchases done by the department. We are in the process of making a report which we will submit to the Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary," Sanjay Kumar, WCD Principal Secretary, told PTI. The report will be submitted to Fadnavis by today, he said, adding it will then be forwarded it to the ACB.

If you visit for lunch or dinner try the Nutty Spaghetti (Rs.315) which is their rather interesting take on good ol’ Spaghetti Aglio Olio or The Asian Salad (Rs.270) which is Head Chef Gaurav Manjrekar’s (Ex Marriot Hotel) recipe and quite a favorite here. Now for the desserts, the most important part of the meal for many, are all made inhouse along with their breads. The seven-layer cookie is rich and heavy with Belgian chocolate, butterscotch, biscuit crumble and almonds baked to perfection. It accounts for almost 10 per cent of their sales and really vanishes off the rack quickly, a must try here. The warm apple crumble doesn’t disappoint either, it’s not too sweet and just right.

She always enjoyed cooking, wanted to be a part of the food industry and sought to go to culinary school. She instead studied and worked as a chartered accountant and even worked in the garment industry. Foot-tapping music, noisy happy customers and décor that is easy on the eyes. Next, order the buttermilk pancakes especially the chocolate pancake which is fluffy, light and delectable. It’s made with all the good stuff, Belgian chocolate for example, one of the few ingredients that they import here. The ingredients are mostly local, their food is freshly made, (no

Also try the the Bagel and Cream Cheese (Rs.280), much effort has been taken to perfect it and make it taste like the original American Bagel. There’s also the unique Breakfast in a Bottle (Rs.180) which is a blend of oats, milk, dates and nuts. Eggs Kejriwal (Rs.270), barley and cracked wheat upma (Rs.195), eggs to order and Mushrooms on toast (Rs.210) are some of the other dishes on offer. Many items on the menu include some of Bafna’s own recipes and dishes she grew up eating. Salli eggs (Rs.210) for example is her grandmother’s recipe while the Blackbean Burger (Rs.380) is her own.

The Nutcracker reflects Annie Bafna’s sensibilities and is much like her. There’s a focus on freshness and health which gets a big thumbs up from us. It is moderately priced. The service time, space crunch in seating and at the back end are some of the niggling issues that they’re ironing out. The limited menu and lack of nonvegetarian food could be a disappointment for some but they do justice to whatever they serve. The combination of great food and ambience makes you want to go back for more. The personalized touch and presence of the owner makes this home style café a warm and wholesome experience. Do try!

Pull up police, reduce liquor tax T

HE cottage industry carried on in hide-outs across the city and suburbs was flourishing during the days of prohibition. The demand for it then was huge and illicit joints came up in places like Dhobi Talao. It was claimed, when prohibition was scrapped, spurious liquor business would end. The situation in the city with regard to the manufacturer and distribution of illicit liquor is not as bad as it was. Bootleggers are however still there doing the dangerous, dirty work. They have developed quite a successful production and distribution plan. The death of over 100 persons who consumed spurious liquor has shown that the bootleggers are quite active. What is not known is that illicit liquor also causes death by slow poisoning. How is spurious liquor so easily available? How is it no proper preventive steps taken? If the police were more alert and carried out proper raids, there would not have been any poisonous liquor available in the city. It is being said that the police are hand in glove with the bootleggers. The police conduct mock raids and they maintain reports of them. Production of illicit liquor seems to have increased now and it is imperative that the police must be asked to take suitable steps to end spurious liquor production. It is also necessary that the cost of country made liquor must be reduced. This can happen if there is less tax on liquor.

xactly four decades ago, on this day, Indians had woken up to the news of the declaration of an internal Emergency by the then prime minister, Indira Gandhi (Mrs. Gandhi). The outside world heard of it subsequently. Although declared through a related provision in the Indian constitution, the consequent arrests of politicians belonging to the various opposition parties, suspension of the fundamental rights of citizens, constriction of the judiciary, and significantly censoring the press, were assaults upon the body politic of the country which jolted the Indian citizenry to the realization that the accountability and freedoms guaranteed in a democracy had been significantly curtailed. Clamped upon the country on the pretext to thwart the spiralling civil unrest permeating the country and possibly to negate the Allahabad High Court ruling, which held Mrs. Gandhi guilty, of electoral malpractices and had debarred her from elective office for six years, the Emergency, continued for about nineteen months, after which it was uplifted; the people enthusiastically participated in an accompanying general election, and voted out Mrs. Gandhi (Mrs. Gandhi) and her party from office, thereby outpouring their accrued fury against the Congress dispensation, led by Mrs. Gandhi.

with the thought that they had found their redeemer. The spectacular Indian victory in a war with Pakistan in December, 1971, over the creation of Bangladesh, turned adoration for Mrs. Gandhi to adulation. Nevertheless, from that Olympian peak of glory, Mrs. Gandhi’s politically downward spiral was particularly swift. The economically populist slogans she espoused and the attendant measures she took created a maze of controls on the economy, and significantly tied it down from growing meaningfully: a near-absence of increasing employment opportunities for India’s burgeoning population was the outcome. The great political divide in India The prelude to the “Emergency” was marked by a steady deterioration of Mrs. Gandhi's political stature. The country also witnessed the complete breakdown of political consensus between the government and the opposition. The seeds for the subsequently manifested political confrontation between the government and the opposition – leading to the Emergency – were possibly sown in 1969. That was the year of the great political divide in modern Indian political history. To continue as Prime Minister and establish her supremacy, Mrs. Gandhi divided the Congress Party. The constituent headed by the party’s traditional leadership, metaphorically speaking, was thrown to the scrap heap, while Mrs. Gandhi rode the crest of popularity, on the strength of her promises to rejuvenate the new Congress Party – known as Congress(R) - under her leadership, give it a “progressive” orientation, and work tenaciously for the uplift of the poor. In a mid-term parliamentary election in 1971, she pulled of a sensational victory for her party on the strength of the powerful slogan “Garibi Hatao” (Remove Poverty): it had overwhelmed the poor – constituting a greater proportion electorate then than now –

sive controls created plenty of rooms for graft, and it was increasingly alleged that many positioned favourably in relation to the corridors of power proverbially made maximum hay while the sun shone. Added to it, were the increasingly credible allegations of political high-handedness, nepotism, and resort to sharp practices in financial matters by the ruling Congress party. By 1973, the opposition parties had found a respectable leader to lead their political crusade against the government. He was Jayaprakash Narayan, popularly known as JP: a respectable veteran freedom fighter and subsequent Gandhian, whose latent scrupulousness in politics had given him a saintly halo. From the end of 1973 till June, 1975, JP led the opposition movement against Mrs. Gandhi’s government through demands to the Prime Minister to arrest corrupt practices infesting the polity, occasional meetings with her, cobbling together disparate opposition parties under a single banner of a “Janata” coalition to initially fight state elections and to form a singular political front against the Congress party, extending support for protest movement in the states of Gujarat and Bihar to secure the resignation of the Congress-led

Compassion for suffering shows ignorance T

here are two types of compassion. One is the compassion of the wise; one is that of the ignorant. An ignorant person’s compassion is toward the fruit of an action - to alleviate the sickness or suffering that he witnesses. But a wise person’s compassion is toward the lack of knowledge - to remedy the underlying reason for sickness or suffering. Compassion for suffering shows ignorance. Suffering comes because of karma and if you believe in karma, where is compassion? Often people think compassion is an act, an action. Know that compassion is your very nature. Then you will see that karma and compassion are not contradictory but rather complement one another. What type of compassion should the doctor have toward each of them? This is a riddle

administrations in the two states which had earned the disapproval of many in the two states, while travelling across the entire country and addressing political rallies, where he repeatedly held Congress government at the Centre to be culpable for corruption and high-handedness. On June 25, 1975, JP addressed a mammoth rally at New Delhi’s Ramlila grounds, where he called for the army and the police to stop obeying the orders of the central government if found to be unconstitutional.

Political authoritarianism By so doing, JP had latently gone beyond what was constitutionally acceptable. If the government was guilty of malpractices, JP should have been more responsible in the way he opposed the government. It was a democratically elected government, and if the people so decided they could have voted it out of power in the upcoming elections in 1976. It seems, in hindsight, that both the government and the opposition had contributed in their own respective ways, towards determining a political authoritarianism that gripped the country, forty years ago, for a stretch of nineteen months. The tremendous electoral defeat suffered by Mrs. Gandhi in the first post-Emergency elections in March, 1977, and the hasty repeal of all draconian measures effected during the “Emergency”, by the victorious Janata government, was a valuable lesson for the entire political class of India to never compromise with the country’s cherished democratic paradigm, with its associated rights and responsibilities. The steadily increasing rumblings of public discontent as the “Emergency” wore on and the mounting urge Mrs. Gandhi began to feel towards the end of her authoritarian reign, are testaments to the compulsive pull of the attributes of democracy in India; it compels the country’s political rulers to seek the legitimacy of the people’s judgement, through democratic elections, after every interregnum of five years. For the past forty years, after the end of the Emergency, Indian democracy has progressed through sundry vicissitudes, but never has any administration compromised its fundamental attributes as an excuse of restoring order amid chaos. The country’s democratic constitution provides ample opportunities for successive administrations to maintain requisite law and order through effective and accountable governance, thereby proliferating the country’s political stability, security, and economic prosperity. burns the seed of all negative karmas before they are given a chance to sprout. Sordid episode of graft and tacit blurb APROPOS your front page story 'Rs. 200 crore scam by Maha govt' (ADC Jun 25), this huge scam by Pankaja Munde exposes the hollow protestations of Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis that he is going to be ruthless in weeding out corruption during his administration. Now that one of his own ministers has been caught with her hand in the till, he is waffling and giving her the benefit of the doubt. This sordid episode also reinforces the public perception that the primary objective of many of our politicians, irrespective of which party they belong to, is to make as much money as they can during their tenure. Coupled with the misdeeds of Sushma Swaraj and Vasundhara Raje, the boastful assertion of our holier-than-thou PM that there has not been a single financial scam or case of impropriety during the first year of his government, stands revealed as the chimera it is. In the case of Vasundhara, I wonder if other readers observed the irony of the lady being given a clean chit by Nitin Gadkari, who had to resign as BJP President because of his involvement in the Purti scandal.

Heavy downpour in Mumbai halted its suburban local trains on tracks recently

Poor railway management APROPOS ‘Railway officials fear that heavy rains could again lead to a ‘Friday situation' (ADC, Jun 24), it is indeed read with huge concern that the suburban railway authorities both the CR and the WR are a bit confused in respect of how to handle the waterlogging during the deluge. In fact during the last Friday's monsoon’s first heavy rainfall to the tune of 300 mm completely paralysed the rail movement for the tracks were under water in different depths starting from ankle deep to nearly waist deep. In Mumbai we have been witnessing such kinds of heavy spells over the years, which is not surprising. However this time the water has been allowed to rise for not bailing out by pumping as the pumps were not mobilised on time. It is certainly ridiculous and this clearly indicates the unpreparedness for such an occasion. Hence all the three sections of the Railways the HR, CR and the WR

Govt has imposed undeclared emergency in country: Cong

NEW DELHI: Congress yesterday accused the government of imposing an "undeclared emergency" in the country after Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed Emergency as one of the "darkest period" in India's history on its 40th anniversary. Congress spokesperson Shobha Oza's attack on the Modi government also comes in the backdrop of a series of statements by NDA ministers on Emergency imposed in 1975 by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. "The suit-boot government working at the Centre has in a way imposed an undeclared emergency in the country. And leaders of the party like Lal Krishna Advani have expressed similar kind of opinion and fear. He does not trust the leadership that an emergency won't be declared in the country," Oza said.

called that lakhs of people had resisted the Emergency declared by Gandhi. "We are very proud of the lakhs of people, who resisted the Emergency & whose efforts ensured that our democratic fabric is preserved," he said. "Inspired by the call of JP, several men & women across India selflessly immersed themselves in the movement to safeguard our democracy," Modi said, referring to Jaiprakash Narain. The Prime Minister said the Emergency brings back many memories and that youngsters had learnt a lot during the anti-Emergency

movement. "Personally, the Emergency brings back many memories. As youngsters, we learnt a lot during the anti-Emergency movement. "Emergency was a great opportunity to work with a wide spectrum of leaders & organisations fighting for the same goal- return of democracy," he said. Modi also referred to Emergency while speaking at the launch of Smart Cities Mission, Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation and Housing for All Missions here. "Nobody can forget June 25-26 in the history of India.

40 years back, the country was bound with chains of emergency and turned into a jail for the lust for power.

"Lakhs of patriots nursing the dream of "Sampoorna Kranti" under the leadership of JP were jailed. Newspaper offices were locked and the radio aired only what the government then wanted," the Prime Minister said. A day after Union Cabinet chaired by him decided to set up a national memorial for socialist icon Jai Prakash Narayan in his birthplace in poll-bound Bihar, the Prime Minister said that the memorial will always be an inspiration to democracy loving citizens of the country. Expressing joy over the Cabinet's decision to set up the memorial, he said it will always be an inspiration and guiding light for democracy lovers and citizens of this country.

BJP must ask Raje to resign, demands Cong

NEW DELHI: Sharpening its attack on BJP over the issue of help extended to controversial former IPL boss Lalit Modi, Congress yesterday said the party should ask Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje to step down as it can no longer "continue to defend the indefensible". After the emergence of a document backing Lalit Modi's immigration application in the UK which purportedly bears Raje's signature, Congress has said that her continuance as Rajasthan Chief Minister has become untenable. Dismissing as being "lame" BJP's claim that the signatures in the said document are forged, Rajasthan Congress chief Sachin Pilot said, "I don't think it is possible for anyone to put up that lame an argument... And, if she had to deny the signatures, she should have done it perhaps in the beginning.

Ramadan mubaRak It’s that time of the year again, when Muslims around the world gear up to fast during the holy month of Ramadan. Yamini Walia & Sara Shah give you more insights into the auspicious, month-long festival

R

amadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, requires the Muslim community to fast during the daylight hours. The fasting doesn’t just include staving off meals, but also requires devotees to refrain from drinking water. And of course, the festival is also associated with delicious treats such as kebabs, baida roti and haleem, that are available across the city. If we haven’t piqued your curiosity yet, read on to find out more about the festival.

What is the significance of Ramadan? Ramadan is known to be the month when Muhammad, the holy prophet received the initial verses of what later became The Holy Quran. The story also goes that the holy prophet was meditating in the Cave Hira, which is situated on the mountain of Jabal an Nur in Mecca. The night that these verses were revealed to him is marked on the calender today as Laylat al-Qadr. In these verses, it is believed, that Muslims were instructed to fast for

the entire month of Ramadan, celebrating it as a month of worship.

Learn about Ramadan

n Contrary to popular belief, it is not compulsory to

fast. Fasting is a choice that an individual makes and is a decision that is completely their own. continued on pg 14 «

n Ramadan is not only about abstinence from food, but also

from intimate relations, cursing, backbiting and anything else considered provocative. n People often believe that Ramadan is a month of

abstinence from food and water for 30 consecutive days, but it’s just abstinence from dawn to dusk. Iftar and the period between iftar and suhoor is the time when you rejuvenate and replenish your body.

>> The most popular option to break Ramadan fast is dates

Best PLaces to exPeRience iftaR “Every year, I make sure that I visit Mohammad Ali road at least twice during Ramadan. I am from Hyderabad, so I have tasted some of the best haleem and nali nihari during Ramadan there. But, Mohammad Ali Road comes quite close. You must try the nali nihari at Shalimar, haleem at Lime n Spice and kebabs from the stalls. I can’t wait to go there this time as well. But, the rains isn’t making it easy to visit!” — Kavita Nair, 26-years-old “Mohammad Ali Road does take away all the limelight, but I prefer heading to Bohri Mohalla at Bhendi Bazaar every Ramadan. I especially love the haleem, malpua and naan-chaap that you get there and the kebabs are to die for.” — Mohammadali Kakal, 21-years-old “Although I would never advise anyone to visit Dongri Bazaar at Dongri normally, it is quite colourful during the holy month of Ramadan. Stalls of multi-coloured Falooda line the streets and the air is filled with the delicious aroma of pakoras and kebabs. Vendors calling out to you and people scurrying about, trying to get their hands on the scrumptious fare — it’s delightful!” — Aamir Pinzara, 22-years-old

inteResting facts There are some interesting facts associated with Ramadan that you may not be aware of. We shed light on a few. n If you think that fasting actually helps you lose weight,

you’re wrong. Most people actually end up gaining weight during Ramadan. This is because people eat more unhealthy food late at night.

n Both Muslim groups (Sunnis and Shi’ites) break their fasts

at different times. While Shi’ites wait for the last ray of light to disappear from the sky until they can eat again, Sunni Muslims break their fast when the daily maghrib prayer begins.

n In the TV industry, Ramadan is a long-awaited season.

Wonder why? It’s because Arabic, and Turkish studios produce 30-episode miniseries — one for each night of the month — all year round, in preparation for Ramadan.

n Egypt is known to push back their clock by an hour to make

fasting easier because the work day becomes shorter.

n Most people break their Ramadan fast by eating dates

that have been harvested in Egypt, North Africa and the Arabian Gulf states. The second most popular option is a fruit juice called jallab, which consists of dates, carob and rose water.

Luxury in simpLicity Looking to buy some seriously beautiful artefacts for your home? Sara Shah tells you why The House of Things is the perfect website to log on to

W

hen I began to review the newly launched The House of Things website, I wasn’t all that kicked. The name sounded run-off-the-mill and there didn’t seem to be much appeal to it. So, I reluctantly logged on to see what it was about. And, it was not in the least bit as dull as I expected! There isn’t much to the website’s design — they’ve kept things simple, which makes the website easy to navigate through. The home page gives you a sneak peak into the collections from various brands, including Sarita Handa, Airdiem, Moser, Micheal Aram and Jay Strongwater, that easily shows you the great options you can choose from. I was quite excited by now, so I decided to check out their products section. Scrolling past the artefacts was like witnessing a whirlwind of colours. On your left are categories that include Furniture, Games, Home Accents and Objet D’Art. I particularly loved their Agate Coasters by JewelCraftz (`12,000) and their Bird Bath Sculpture by Taamaa (`6,340). But — and this is the best part — I don’t recall seeing a single item that I didn’t like. Their beautifully sculpted ceramics and gorgeous blue pottery

have tried a fair amount of shaving creams — from everyday, affordable brands to luxury offerings— and to be honest, I am not really finicky about the type of shaving cream that I use. As long as it gets the job done, I couldn’t care less about the brand name, the packaging or its legacy. However, Truefitt & Hill really won me over. I tried the lavender and sandalwood creams, and both left me quite impressed. The foam was good enough for a smooth, close shave, but not so smooth that your face looks like it’s covered with cotton candy. The shaving cream lathers quickly and the resulting shave is quick as well as smooth, leaving behind a subtle fragrance. artefacts made me want to click the ‘Buy’ option without a second thought. Sadly, everything was way over my budget! They even have a few stunning jewellery pieces on sale and their platter collection is fabulous! What’s great about The House of Things is their tie-up with high-end brands, which offers up some of the most exquisite pieces you will ever see! I especially loved the collection by JewelCraftz, which includes coasters, platters and jewellery boxes, all made from gemstones such as crystal quartz and amethyst, which have been sourced from places such as Afghanistan and Australia. And, if you are a connoisseur of beautiful ceramic cutlery, the brand Nishita is perfect for you! Putting my earlier scepticism to bed, my experience with The House of Things made

me realise that you’re unlikely to get bored of the website. They have an array of quirky bits and artefacts that, even if you aren’t there to buy, are a sheer delight just to look at. They also have beautifully crafted mirrors and piggy banks on sale! My only problem with the website is its high prices. Everything is extremely expensive, particularly for those looking to invest in artefacts without burning a hole in their wallet. Prices start from `400 for one coaster and go all the way up to `8 lakhs for a vase, with prices of several products available only ‘on request’. But one could argue that, you can’t have quality without paying a heavy price for it. So, if you’re looking for some beautiful furnishings, and have the budget for it, The House of Things is definitely worth a visit.

hen you log on to the Baaya Design website, you are greeted by a picture slideshow of their products and their retail store. It’s a pleasant surprise, since all I was expecting was a boring journey of Indian folk crafts with a few products thrown in. While they do cover the story of folk art in their About Baaya section, the rest of the tabs are quite interesting. The About Baaya section has six links that include information about its owner Shibani Jain, Baaya the brand and its projects, retail store, design methodology and social responsibility. The website is compact and restricted, but in a good way. Each link opens on the same page as a small pop-up and doesn’t require you to navigate to a different page. As you scroll down, the website shares information about their interior projects in a beautiful picture collage. Further down, Baaya Design brings you gifting solutions for different festivals and occasions. Clicking on this took me to an e-store that was not in the least bit cluttered. W

hile there are several pizza chains in Mumbai, only a few give you exactly what you’re looking for in a pizza. Eagle Boys Pizza, which has its roots in Australia, is among the youngest brands in the country. They have a few USPs, one of which is that they make their dough twice a day to ensure that they serve fresh pizza bases. Another major point is that nothing on their menu is fried — it’s all baked in a special oven with technology that is apparently derived from NASA. The outlet that I visited in Sion is really tiny; there’s just about enough seating for nine people, and they tell me that they mostly work on a delivery model, although their outlet in Worli is large, with ample seating options.

Sides Apart from pizzas, they also offer side dishes, a few of which are really tasty. A great example of this is their Spicy Garlic Scroll (`89), which is extremely buttery and offers a good mouthful of garlic. And it’s spicy too, so if you like a hot garlic flavour, this will sit well with you. I also liked their Chicken Nuggets. Priced at `89, they were melt-in-the-mouth soft — unlike most other chicken nuggets that I’ve tried in the city. The Chicken Penne Pasta was alright, but the

Chicken Popcorn was average. But, I found the tomato sauce overpowering.

Pizzas I tried three of their vegetarian pizzas. The Margherita is the most basic pizza that you can get and, at `89, it offers great value for money. The bread was soft and the edges crispy — just how a pizza crust should be. The Veg Mexicana (`199) had the subtle spicy hint of Mexican cuisine. The Veg Supreme (`289) is top-of-theline from their vegetarian offerings and has pineapple, jalepenos, olives and capsicum. The pineapple makes for an interesting addition, but the pizza is overpriced for 7”. Moving on to the non-vegetarian selection, their Bondi Chicken (`219)

captivated me, since I’ve watched a few episodes of a show that follows the lifeguards on Australia’s Bondi Beach. It’s a plain pizza, topped with chicken, pineapple, onion and capsicum. The chicken tasted like their nuggets, but was rather plain, unlike Bondi Beach, at least from what I’ve seen. Next was the Chicken Tandoori (`249), which I absolutely loved! With onion, capsicum, tomato and ground paprika, it was the perfect rendition of a taste that we all will naturally like. I also tried the BBQ Chicken (`219) with extra BBQ Chicken (`39), to see what you can expect from the extra toppings. And for the price, it’s a satisfying helping of chicken. However, the pizza itself was average. I capped my meal with Eagle Boys’ marquee pizza, the Sweetza, which is only available in one size and is priced at `99. It works as a great treat for children, but adults will enjoy it too. If you’re curious about the taste, think of a tasty chocolate doughnut with a good helping of chocolate sauce on top.

Crusts What would a pizza experience be without a choice of crust? And Eagle Boys Pizza has four options. The regular is its Deep Dish crust, which makes a nice fluffy base — something that I can recommend for every pizza. They also have a Thin and Crispy crust. While I don’t usually fancy crisp pizzas, for those who do, this is a great option. Then there’s the Cheesy Blast, which, for an additional `79, gives you a cheese-filled edge, so that your last morsel is like a bite of cheesy garlic bread. This is fairly decent and the string cheese used is a mix of Mozzarella and Cheddar. The Big Cheese, also for an additional `79, is the most difficult to eat, yet the tastiest of the lot. There’s definitely reason enough to visit Eagle Boys Pizza, especially once you know what pizza and sides you like. And the prices are pretty reasonable as well. s my colleague and I made our way to Roti Kapda Makaan, we were welcomed by a tagline that read ‘Yahaan har cheez bikau hai.’ And, just as it promises, everything there is up for grabs, including the T-shirts clipped on the window panes, the quirky sunglasses on the shelves, the grater lamps (it’s hard to miss those!), the funky tables that you sit at and even the crockery that you eat in! The store has a colourful ambiance and as we nestled into our seats, we were recommended the soup of the day, Tomato (`180) to start off with. Served with crunchy focaccia bread, the soup is worth a try. Its tangy, spicy flavour lingers even after you’ve devoured it all. Next up we tried the appetisers. We picked tasting portions of Baked Buns (`199) and Stuffed Cones (`199), which are otherwise served in four pieces each. The baked buns came in two flavours — vada pav and sundried tomato with corn, jalapeno and cheese. Both were served piping hot. The vada pav filling doesn’t offer anything new, but is a must try. The unusual stuffed >> The Lebanese Salad is a cones came in two must-try at the restaurant varieties as well — Pav bhaji and Cholle. While the cholle filling could be bland for some of us, I liked the subtle flavours! After this we glanced at the menu to try the main course and picked a Lebanese Salad (`255) and Samosa Curry (`270). As we waited for our orders, we were informed that all main course dishes are offered in jars, which works as an easy pick and go option for customers. Served with pita bread, the Lebanese Salad had layers of cous cous, falafel and hummus. Sadly, it tasted bland, with the pita bread being the only saving grace. The Samosa Curry was too pungent. But its concept was interesting — like an Indian Khao Suey, with a baked samosa dipped in coconut curry and served with condiments. Our meal was accompanied by Nespresso coffee, the only one served in the city. While my colleague picked cold coffee (`120), I opted a regular cappuccino (`150). As excited as we were, the coffees were pretty ordinary. Finally, it was time for dessert. We ordered a Nutella and Banana Teacake (`100), Red Riding Hood (`160) and as recommended, Hand-churned Mango Ice cream (`70). The Nutella and Banana Teacake was warm and moist, perfect for a rainy evening. The Red Riding Hood (a Red Velvet cake served in a jar) is a treat for those who love the flavour as much as I do, but it could lead to a sugar rush. The latter, however, is like a homemade treat. Roti Kapda Makaan is a really interesting place, with a unique theme. Everything palpable is on offer. I recommend not only the quirky gifts and stationery on display, but the food too, barring a few dishes. MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JUNE 26, MUMBAI | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 03, 2015 2010

In a bid to escape the hordes of two wheelers and the urban chaos of Ho Chi Minh City, Raul Dias admits to falling prey to the charms of the bucolic life and lush topography of Vietnam’s picture-perfect, Mekong Delta

I

t was on Day 4 of my elaborately-planned, week-long south Vietnam itinerary, that Ho Chi Minh City — or ‘Saigon’ to use its old and (in my opinion!) more mellifluous sounding name — was starting to get on my nerves. My so-called honeymoon period with the city was ending before my very (weary!) eyes, with every rising plume of exhaust pipe smoke and with every shrill hoot of a pavement-riding two wheeler that almost ran me over for the nth time that day. Yes, as much as I first fell in love with the city’s immaculately manicured gardens and street food wonders like the sublime Banh Mi sandwich and Pho noodle soup, I was now in a whole other state of mind, where love was the furthermost emotion I was feeling! Something my hotel’s manager said would be remedied only after spending a couple of days immersed in the bucolic charms of the Mekong Delta, not very far away from my soon-turning bête noire — Ho Chi Minh City.

>> The Vinh Trang pagoda is a unique structure, with striking statues and gorgeous architecture

FACT FILE n Getting There: While there are no

direct flights from Mumbai to Ho Chi Minh City, the best way to get there is via Bangkok. There are numerous direct flights daily from Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh City on airlines such as Jet Airways, Thai Airways and Vietnam Airlines. From Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta is an 1.5 hours drive by bus or car with several tour companies offering such services. A visa permission letter for Vietnam can be obtained online and exchanged for a visa stamp at Ho Chi Minh City airport for USD 45.

GrEAT EsCApEs Armed with a backpack full of brochures and my trusty guidebook for company, I hopped on to a bus heading southwest. My destination? The idyllic town of My Tho. As the gateway to the Mekong Delta, My Tho is the capital of the Tien Giang province and so is, an important market town. But before I start waxing eloquent about the wonders of My Tho, a wee bit of a pagoda pit stop made by my bus driver in order to seek blessings, deserves a mention. The Vinh Trang

n When to Visit: Although the best time to visit Vietnam is from

October to March, the rainy season that lasts from June till September is a glorious time to be in the south of the country, especially in the Mekong Delta that wears a lush, verdant cover.

Pagoda in My Phong village, situated close to My Tho, was unlike any other pagoda I had seen so far. Structurally, a cross between a Hindu temple and a Buddhist shrine, this pagoda was built in 1849 and is said to feature a blend of Chinese, Vietnamese and Angkor (Cambodian) architectural styles. The pagoda consists of five buildings, two ornamental yards and 178 pillars. Inside the pagoda, I marveled at a set of pictures called Eight Angels Riding On Animals. Another set of statues of the Amitabha Holy Trinity is carved in bronze and is as big as a man, and more particularly, the set of the 18 Arhants. As the pagoda’s priests were about to head for lunch, I quickly made my way around the exquisitely decorated inner courtyard before paying obeisance to the huge and rather convivial-looking Laughing Buddha’s statue on the left side of the pagoda.

WATEr MAGIC! Hitting the water hyacinth-surrounded My Tho Dock a mere 10 minutes later, I savoured my first glance of the mighty Mekong River. Having been acquainted with the 7th longest river in Asia on my previous my trips to Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, its Vietnamese facet was oddly familiar, and equally striking! A virtual ecosystem seems to exist, nay, thrive along its placid waters with floating markets, homes, and even schools happily going about their business. A short jet boat

ride later and I found myself sniffing in the heady aroma of coconut being cooked at the coconut candy factory on Unicorn Island. Right from de-husking the coconut and, extracting its milk, to cooking it with palm sugar, cooling the resulting molten candy and finally wrapping it up in the strangely edible paper covering, the factory workers are pros, who manage to skillfully convince you to pick up a packet of the yummy, freshly made candy for a mere 20,000 Vietnamese Dong (around `64). But, I needed no convincing to help myself to a shot glass of the ultra-potent coconut liquor that was strong enough to fuel a rocket! After a short horse buggy ride around the tiny island, it was time for a simple lunch of Ban Tam Bi — rice noodles with roast pork covered in sweetish coconut cream (we were at a coconut candy factory, after all), accompanied by a durian and coconut ice-cream.

FLoATInG AWAy… Speaking of durian, the supremely stinky South East Asian fruit with a notorious reputation seemed to be the star product on sale at the Cai Rang Floating Market the next day. Having spent the night in Can Tho, the Mekong Delta’s largest provincial capital city located 6kms away, I set off the next morning to check out this floating commerce hub of for two reasons. First, I wanted to avoid the merciless mid-day May sun. And second, the market is best explored between 7 and 8am, as most vendors are eager to do an auspicious

n Accommodation: Can Tho has an excellent selection of hotels to

choose from according to all budgets and tastes. Some of the best value-for-money options are: - Hotel Xoai (www.hotelxoai.com) - Victoria Can Tho Resort (www.victoriahotels.asia)

first sale, similar to our desi concept of boani. Passing by vibrantly-painted boats being anchored along the shore, merchant vessels carrying loads down the river and houses built on stilts over the water, the boat that I had hired for half a day came with its very own English-speaking skipper named Hei (pronounced: “Hi!”) who doubled up as my de facto guide du jour. While the floating market itself is quite an impressive site, it is the merchants that ply their wares on the waters who are the real stars. From the chatty woman selling durians to the shy soft drink vendor who gently attaches her boat to yours with hooks, as she persuades you to try her super-strong Ca Phe Sua Da (iced Vietnamese coffee with sweetened condensed milk), the Cai Rang Floating Market is filled with distinctive characters.

noodLEs And pApEr? After a languid 10-minute ride from the market, my final stop before heading back to Life in a Metro was to the rice paper and vermicelli noodle factory on Phoenix Island. Here, large mounds of soaked glutinous rice are processed into a slurry, which is then spread over cloth-covered circular pans and cooked till a translucent skin is created. Once the skin is cooked a little, it’s spread over bamboo mats to let it dry in the sun. For rice paper — that is used in the sublime Vietnamese spring rolls called Gỏi Cuốn in the south and Nem Ran in the north —the rice skin is dried only for a short while. But, for turning into vermicelli noodles, they are dried till they are rough and leathery. After this, they are fed though a shredder (much like an office paper shredder) and they come out as shiny fine noodle strands that are enjoyed in dishes such as Bun Bo Xao (lemon grass beef and noodle salad) and Bún Thịt Nướng (grilled pork over vermicelli noodles). Making a mental note to try out the aforementioned goodies back in Ho Chi Minh City that night, I bid adieu to the Mekong Delta — a languorous and fascinating waterworld that made me shout “What a World!”

Renewed confidence defined India in financial year 2015. Investor sentiment had never been stronger and this was aided by a favourable macro-economic environment. For a commodity importing economy like India, lower crude oil prices helped rein in inflation and the fiscal and current account deficit. Against a prolonged global economic slowdown, India stood out as the country with immense growth potential. The global economic outlook continues to remain challenging. The timing of the lift-off in US interest rates remains uncertain, though inevitable. Further, the current divergence in global monetary policies compounds the uncertainty. This has resulted in increased volatility in asset prices and has heightened the risk of adverse spillovers, particularly for emerging markets. In this milieu, it is natural that some investors may be increasingly edgy. Trying as these circumstances may be, it is reassuring that there are ample long-term investors who believe India’s best is still to come.

Rajan Says Economy In Better Shape, But Flags Volatility

RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan has said macroeconomic fundamentals of the country have improved over the past two years and emerging market economies like India are better placed to face any eventuality. In the same breath, he cautioned against more volatility, given conflicting action by the developed world. After the "taper tantrums" starting mid-May 2013, when the Fed hinted at reversing its easy money policy, "a combination of global factors and concerted domestic policy decisions" have helped the country, Rajan said in the foreword to the Financial Stability Report 2015 (FSR) released by RBI yesterday."The macro-economic fundamentals have improved and we have also been able to build buffers to fight any future uncertainty," he said, stressing that "we need to be vigilant" he said, adding "With back-to-back quantitative easing by other major central banks, alongside the possible tightening by the Fed, what we have seen might be only one of a series of such 'tantrums' that the global markets are likely to witness."

India was ranked number one in embracing automation in operations and practices, followed by Mexico and Ireland in the second and third place, respectively."Given the population size and the underlying economy growth drivers for India, automation and digitisation would probably be one of the key drivers to future growth," Grant Thornton India Partner Raja Lahiri said.

s many as 11 Indian companies including Avanti Feeds and Borosil Glass Works are ranked among top 200 Asia Pacific corporations in Forbes Asia's 'Best Under A Billion' list. The list covers public companies with annual revenue of USD 5 million to USD 1 billion, Forbes said, adding that they should also have positive net income and should be publicly traded for at least a year. Companies from mainland China & Hong Kong (84) as well as Taiwan (36) dominated this year's list accounting for 60 per cent of the top 200 publicly-traded companies in the Asia Pacific region. With 11 companies, India was ranked fourth on the list after South Korea which has 17 firms in the coveted list. The Indian companies that made it to the list include Byke Hospitality, Caplin Point Laboratories, Centum Electronics, Kaveri Seed, Kitex Garments, NGL FineChem, Orbit Exports, Premco Global and Vakrangee, reports PTI. Of the 200 companies, 123 are new to the list, which underscores the "dynamism of the region's small and medium-sized sector", Forbes said. India and Malaysia both have 11 companies on the list while Australia has nine firms. This year, Japan dropped out of the top five countries, with only eight companies compared to 15 last year. Singapore and Thailand were represented by six companies each, while Pakistan had by 2 companies. "The secret to making the BUB is consistent growth in the measured performance metrics. The new investment pattern for EPFO provides that the body will invest in "shares of body corporates listed on Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) or National Stock Exchange (NSE) which have market capitalisation of not less than Rs 5,000 crore as on the date of investment". According to investment norms, the retirement fund body can also invest in units of mutual funds regulated by the Securities Exchange Board of India and which have minimum 65% of their investment in shares of body corporates listed on BSE or NSE.

ith rising demand from retail investors for mutual fund schemes, the draft papers by fund houses filed with capital markets regulator Sebi for launching New Fund Offers have gone as high as 100 since January. The documents for these 100 NFOs have been submitted with the Securities and Exchange Board of India since the beginning of this year. Some of these NFOs have already been launched, while other schemes would be opened for subscription soon after getting the necessary clearances. UTI MF, Axis MF, ICICI Prudential MF, Birla Sunlife MF, and SBI MF are among the fund houses that are offering NFOs to investors. L&FS Transportation Networks yesterday said it has emerged as the lowest bidder for two highways projects worth Rs 4,174 crore in Maharashtra, bids for which were invited by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs had approved both the projects in its meeting, chaired by PM Narendra Modi, on June 17. "IL&FS Transportation Networks Ltd has... According to market participants, fund houses are rushing to Sebi to launch new schemes with growing interest among retail investors for mutual fund schemes. Recent fund launches have also received good response from investors. Also, they said that the NFO market has picked up as the investors' confidence about equity markets is back and participation from retail investors is also on upswing. In the past one year, several funds gave more than the index returns. This has brought retail investors' interest back into equities and they started participating through mutual funds, market participants added.

PM Calls For People-Centric Urban Planning And Development Launches three mega urban schemes viz., Smart Cities Mission, Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and Housing for All in urban areas, involving a central grant of Rs 4 lakh crore By A Business Reporter

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday launched three mega urban schemes viz., Smart Cities Mission, Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and Housing for All in urban areas setting in motion the process of urban transformation to enable better living standards and drive economic growth. Stressing on the need for people-centric urban planning and development, he said that for the first time in the county such an effort has been launched. Defining a Smart City as one which is one or two steps ahead of the aspirations of the people, Modi said smart city aspirants are being selected through a process of competition and with effective citizen participation ending the ‘top down’ approach and leading to ‘people-centric’ urban development. He further said that the new schemes were formulated after extensive consultations with all the stakeholders, the biggest of its kind in the country so far. Modi noted that the management of urbanization in the country offered the biggest challenge and opportunity for the people and elected municipal leadership to contribute to transforming urban India. Stating that public representatives are remembered for the good work they did during their tenures, the Prime Minister urged Mayors and Municipal Chairpersons attending the launch to contribute for the good of the people. He reminded them that the 500 of them assembled have the responsibility of ensuring a better quality of life for 40% of the country’s population that either lives in urban areas or dependent on them for livelihood. He urged them to help migrants to urban areas meet their aspirations.

Promises to protect home-buyers Observing that the image of builders is "bad", Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday promised to protect the homebuyers and said a bill in this regard will be pushed during the upcoming Monsoon session of Parliament. He rued that there is a lack of holistic vision about urban planning and said expansion is driven not by the administrators of a city, but by property developers."In our country, wittingly or unwittingly, the image of builder lobby is bad," Modi said asserting that his government is sensitive to consumer protection, he said, adding "A poor person invests all his savings for a house, but when he is cheated, he loses everything. Stating that urbanization should be viewed as an opportunity, Prime Minster noted that had this been recognized about 30 years ago, the situation would have been far better today. He said that with clear vision and effective planning, all possible hurdles could be overcome and even resource mobilization would not be an issue. The Prime Minister observed that a house would be a major turning point in the lives of the poor as it would motivate them towards higher goals like earning and saving more for further bettering their living standards. He said that the Government is committed to enabling 2 crore urban poor own their houses by the year 2022, the 75th year of Independence of the Country.

Shamita, who was last seen in "Cash", took a sabbatical from acting to start a career in interior designing in 2011. The "Life In a Metro" actress, who served as a judge on a popular dance reality show, said such shows are not as simple as they look. "It's a very difficult show... I have been on the judging panel for these reality programmes and it's very easy to just sit and judge. But the amount of work performers put in and the effort that goes into doing a dance routine is far more challenging," she said. This time "Jhalak" will be judged by actor Shahid Kapoor, who has replaced show's regular Madhuri Dixit. The other names of the judging panel are yet to be announced.

adakh is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque destinations in India. And Divya Khosla Kumar is a director who has consistently promoted Indian destinations through her movies in order to show the beauty that India has to offer. This is evident with her shooting her upcoming movie, 'Sanam Re' in breathtaking locales such as Kalpa near Shimla and most recently, Pangong Lake, Ladakh. Speaking on the experience of shooting in Ladakh where her entire unit stayed for three days in close to zero degrees in tents, Divya says that "India has so much to offer in terms of raw untouched beauty. It was in Ladakh where Yashji shot a part of his last film ''Jab Tak Hai Jaan'' and there are no words to describe the feeling of shooting for ''Sanam Re'' there. Shooting as a unit under such extreme temperatures bonds the entire cast and crew together and highlights the passion of all the people working in and for ''Sanam Re." Divya is all set for a Valentine's Day release in February 2016 for ''Sanam Re'' starring Rishi Kapoor, Pulkit Samrat, Yami Gautam and Urvashi Rautela.

t seems like half the year just zipped by, and so far, the toast of the industry is Kangana Ranaut whose double role inTanu Weds Manu Returns made it one of the biggest grossers of 2015, abd also pushed her to the top position, without doing any films with the Khans, as she proudly pointed out in several interviews. The second quarter of the year has been a very interesting one, both in terms of the range of films releases as well as the success ratio. Some like the dance extravaganza ABCD 2 and the budget, star-studded drama, Dil Dhadakne Do were expected to do well, and did. Akshay Kumar starrer Gabbar is Back pleased the single screen audiences at whom it was aimed. The surprises hit Piku, with Deepika

both of whom badly need a hi t. Poor Emraan Hashmi had a nother flop in Mr X by Vikram Bhatt. But the clunker that se nt the industry and social me dia into a tizzy was Anurag Ka shyap’s heavily promoted Bo mbay Velvet, which jeopardized the careers of Ranbir Ka poor, who is having an unlucky run and the box-office and Anushka Sharma, rid ing high after PK and NH 10. Dibakar Banerjee’s much-aw aited and well-marketed Detective Byomkesh Bakshi was appreciated for its production values, just like Bombay Velvet was, but It’s box-off ice was on the low side. The big disappointment of the quarter was P Se PM Tak, not just because it was so awful, but because it was directed by Kundan Shah, who will always be in Bollywood’s

RINGSIDE VIEW Deepa Gahlot Padukone driving the peculiar story about the protagonist’s peculiar relationship with her constipated father (Amitabh Bachchan). Mohit Suri’s record of success was diluted by the weepy melodrama Hamari Adhuri Kahani, which further d epleted the star value of Vidya Balan and Emraam Hashmi,

hall of fame for Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro. The silly comedy Welcome 2 Karachi fared better than this. Sunny Leone, who has in the past demonstrated her star power, had duds like Kuch Kuch Locha Hai and Ek Paheli Leela—she could not have chosen worse films to star in. Kalki Koechlin warmed hearts in the role of a spirited cerebral palsy patient in Margarita With A Straw. The film may not have made hundreds or crores but the appreciation it won was worth a lot more. The next few weeks are going to have a Bajrangi Bhaijaan snowstorm, but let’s not overlook Neeraj Ghaywan’s little gem Masaan that has been winning international accolades and is the film to watch for in July.

Curtis called on the media community in Cannes to join the founding team to promote the new global goals for sustainable development. “I would love everyone to get behind the mission to make the goals famous. We are targeting every website and billboard, every TV and radio station, every cinema, every community, every school and every mobile phone network with the task of carrying a simple message about the goals for the 7 days after they are launched,” Curtis said. The campaign is backed by Sawa, the global cinema advertising association.

Jogging into memory-lane, Shailendra, who has sung a string of evergreen RDB chartbusters such as ‘Humne Tumo Dekha’ (Khel Khel Mein) and ‘Hoga Tumse Pyara Kaun’ ( Zamane Ko Dikhana Hain), ‘Jaane Do Naa’ (Saagar), feels that Pancham’s forte was his futuristic foresight to know what precisely would click with the audiences. “Which is why he could boldly experiment with weird sound-effects and while singing, using rasp, grunt bass vocals as in the chartbuster song ‘Duniya Mein (Apna Desh). Recalls Shailendra, who was given his singing debut-break in ‘Bobby’ by showman Raj Kapoor, “It was Panchamda who instantly connected with me at the star-studded musical RK muhurat. Impressed with my vocal talent, he later got me on board to playback in ‘Khel Khel Mein’, which also had the legendary Kishore-da’s tracks,” reveals Singh who has sung a peppy playback ‘duet’ number with ‘diva’ actress Rekha ! “The song

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JUNE 26, 2015

N

ottingham: India's tennis hero Leander Paes has added yet another milestone to his terrific career, which is full of achievements, as the veteran pro has now played with 100 different partners on the ATP circuit. When Paes took court with Marcel Granollers at the Aegon Open in Nottingham, yesterday, the Spaniard was his 100th partner. They reached the quarterfinals after eking out a 3-6 6-2 11-9 win over Treat Huey and Scott Lipsky. Paes has been most successful with estranged partner Mahesh Bhuapthi with whom he won three of his eight men's doubles Grand Slam titles. He won two each with Radek Stepanek and Lukas Dlouhy and one with Martin Damm, all of whom incidentally are from Czech Republic. Paes is the 47th player to reach a century of doubles partners. Of these 100 partners, 71 played with him on the Tour level while 29 at the Challenger level. "It means I've had a very long career. It's quite intriguing in an individual sport like

Tendulkar voted best Test player of 21st century by CA website

Melbourne: India's legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar has been voted the 'Best Test player' of the 21st century in an online poll conducted by Cricket Australia's website. The former India skipper got the highest number of votes to emerge on top of the list of the 100 best Test players since 2000, in a poll conducted by cricket.com.au. Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara received the second highest votes, followed by Adam Gilchrist of Australia in the third position. Currently the 'Icon' of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians, Tendulkar earned 23 per cent of votes, with more than 16,000 fans participating in the survey. Sangakkara got 14 per cent votes after CA released the top100 Test players' list since 2000 on its website. Tendulkar, who retired from international cricket in 2013 after playing his 200th Test, is the lone Indian player to be figuring in the top-10 list, while there are four Australian, three South African and two Sri Lankan cricketers.

It's been a very blessed journey to go through 25 years and 100 partners," Paes said. Paes also became just the eighth player to notch 700 match wins with victory in the Roland Garros first round last month but the first member of the club to have amassed more than 50 titles and 700 match victories. "I put a lot of home-

"Mahesh Bhupathi was mostly a baseliner and then his volleys improved down the track. David Rikl too. There were so many different partners with different skill sets and I'd learn from their strengths, so we complement each other as a team. With all the moving variables that you get to learn a lot about the partnership," Paes said. "I've been very good at un-

The Indo-Swiss duo got the better of the unseeded combo of Taipei's Chan and Pennetta from Italy 4-6 6-3 10-6 in an-hour-and 13minute quarterfinal contest of the USD 731000 grass court tournament, the last before the Wimbledon. Sania and Hingis converted five out of the six breakpoints they got in the

NO INDIAN TO PLAY IN WIMBLEDON SINGLES THIS YEAR London: For the second consecutive Grand Slam this year, there will be no Indian featuring in the singles event as Saketh Myneni bowed out of the Wimbledon qualifiers following compatriots Yuki Bhambri and Somdev Devvarman.

Myneni lost his second round 6-7 (5) 6-3 7-9 to Frenchman Kenny De Schepper, who is ranked 163, 47 places above the Indian. Earlier, Yuki had lost his first round 6-7(5), 6-2 2-6 to lower-ranked Italy's Matteo Donati. Yuki is ranked 156 while Donati is 225. Somdev, who has been struggling since winning the Delhi Open Challenger in February, lost his opening round 7-5 4-6 2-6 to Spain's Nigo Cervantes. In the doubles, India will have a strong representation as Leander Paes, Rohan Bopnna and women world number one Sania Mirza will be top contenders. The Wimbledon championships begin from Monday.

A former World No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Doubles Rankings, Paes, who turned 42 a week ago, is the sixth active member of the '100 Partners Club', with Frank Moser (144), Andre Sa (119), Olivier Marach (109), Carlos Berlocq (104) and James Cerretani (104). "The majority of the time with these 100 partners I've led the team, but off the court I look to build the chemistry. When you're on the court handling the stressful situations, you need to know that your partner has your back. "Making someone feel comfortable on the court is something I've been blessed with. The best partnerships are the ones where there is a lot of give and take, where there is good communication and chemistry other than the tennis skill set," he said. Paes also won seven mixed doubles Grand Slam titles -three with Cara Black, two with legendary Martina Navratilova and one each with Lisa Raymond and Martina Hingis.

Paes-Granollers pair bows out of Aegon Open

N

ottingham: Top seeds Leander Paes and Marcel Granollers were today knocked out the ATP Aegon Open following a quarterfinal defeat against unseeded Chris Guccione and Andre Sa, here. Paes and Granollers, the 100th partner of the Indian, lost 4-6 6-3 7-10 to Australian-Brazilian team in one hour and 15 minutes in the Euro 644065 grass court event, the last in the build up to the Wimbledon. Paes and Granollers did not any break opportunity in the opening set as Guccione and Andre played solid service games. The top seeds managed to saved three

break chances on their serve but could not stop the opponents from converting the fourth and lost the set. Paes and Granollers broke the rival pair in the fourth game for a 3-1 lead but Paes committed a double fault when they were down by two break chances in the fifth game to let go the advantage. They capitalised on the second break chance in the sixth game to yet again nose ahead, increasing the possibility of a Super Tie Break. Paes and Granollers then saved a break point in the seventh game for a comfortable 5-2 lead. The top seeds closed the set in their favour, converting the third set point in the ninth game, following a hold by the rivals. The Indo-Spanish pair though made a horrible start to the deciding Super Tie Break, losing four straight points to trail 0-4. They saved four match points, doing all they could to save the match, but Guccione and Andre converted their fifth chance to spell end for the top seeds.

Time has come to decide on kind of fast bowlers we want: Dhoni

M

IRPUR: India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit out at his fast bowlers, saying that the time has come to decide on the future of the existing pace attack. "This win is good, but we need to make a decision if we want quick bowlers or if we want good bowlers even if they are not quick. We have been backing too many quick bowlers who haven't been bowling well," said Dhoni after India posted a face saving win over Bangladesh in the third and final ODI here today. Umesh Yadav, brought back into the side, leaked 33 runs in four overs. Dhoni attributed the 77run win to the team's performance with the bat. India scored 317 for six courtesy Dhoni's 69 and a fluent 75 from Shikhar Dhawan. "What was important was to put runs on the board, which we did," said Dhoni. "If we give our bowlers those extra 10-15 runs, the game is on. Partnerships were the key. At times on slow pitches, it looks like you are behind the target but it is important to keep the wickets in tact. We have resources in the last 10 overs to get a par-plus total." Dhoni made his runs at number four, a position he would want to continue to bat on. "The last two years I have hardly batted at 4. If I have, I have only done so after the 30th-35th over. This was my chance to bat. That's why we have pushed Raina to 6 so that we have an experienced batsman at 6. This is something I can do only if Nos 6 and 7 keep on batting well. I won't be shy, I hadn't been moving well

against spin but that had to do with the fact that there wasn't much batting behind me," he added. Suresh Raina was named man of the match for his 38 and three wickets. He said batting made the difference in the match. "We batted really well as a group," said Raina. "MS and Shikhar had a good partnership. MS took the responsibility. And then we and Stuart (Binny) had a good partnership. Dhawal (Kulkarni) started off the bowling well, and me and Ashwin followed up on it. We played really well today, that's the positive we will take from here. Bangladesh played really well in the series, looking forward to coming back here." Mashrafe Mortaza, who guided Bangladesh to their first ever series win over India, was pleased with the team's effort. "The way we have played the whole series, we have a lot of positives, and a lot of lessons from today," said Mortaza.

ARCH-RIVALS FACE OFF

The Indian team during their match against Poland during the Pool A encounter of Hockey World League.

India face Pakistan test in HWL semi-finals today

A

ntwerp (Belgium): After two unconvincing wins, a misfiring India face their first real test when they take on arch-rivals Pakistan in a much-anticipated Pool A encounter of Hockey World League semi-finals, here today. The showstopper encounter between Asian Games champions India and Champions Trophy silver medallists Pakistan has raised the stakes in the diamond city of Antwerp. The misfiring Indians enjoy the luxury of having already qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games, but Pakistan have promised to go all-out into attack in today's subcontinental contest.

For both India and Pakistan, a victory in this preliminary pool match will pave the way for a favourable quarterfinal draw. Tomorrow's match is also the first encounter between the sub-continental hockey rivals since their clash in the tense, incident-marred Champions Trophy semifinals in Bhubaneswar, where some gestures during onfield celebrations by the victorious Pakistani team lead to a few suspensions. There remains some palpable tension between the teams over that incident, but today both the side would seek to showcase the attractive sub-continental style of hockey.

Going into the contest, both India and Pakistan's strikers have been erratic and wayward. India have won both their first two outings against France (3-2) and Poland (3-0) but Paul van Ass' wards were far from impressive. Pakistan, on the other hand, managed to beat Poland 2-1 before being outplayed by Australia. Australia hammered Pakistan 6-1 last evening after being 1-1 level at half-time. India captain Sardar Singh said even though their Rio Olympic berth is secured, they want to take this opportunity produce some positive results ahead of the World League Finals, to be played at

home at the end of the year. "We want to win against Pakistan ahead of the game against World champions Australia the next day," said Sardar. For India's new chief coach Paul van Ass to be a part of an Indo-Pak contest comes as a completely new experience. "It's going to be my first experience of an India-Pakistan hockey encounter. But during the 2010 World Cup in Delhi, I saw the excitement it causes," said Van Ass, a former Dutch national coach. Van Ass says he had only seen the current Pakistan team on television before the ongoing tournament, but insisted India were focused on their own game.

ANTIAGO: Hosts Chile sent nine-man Uruguay crashing out of the Copa America, winning a stormy quarter-final 1-0 to edge closer to their dream of a first South American crown. An 81st-minute strike from Juventus defender Mauricio Isla settled a pulsating encounter at Santiago's Estadio Nacional as holders Uruguay saw striker Edinson Cavani and defender Jorge Fucile sent off. Fucile's dismissal for a second yellow card in the closing minutes triggered a mass confrontation involving players and officials from both sides, with even Uruguay's veteran coach Oscar Tabarez coming onto the pitch. Brazilian referee Sandro Meira Ricci had already incurred the wrath of Uruguay's players after his decision to show a second yellow card to Cavani in the 61st minute. Cavani, booked in the first half for a foul on Arturo Vidal, saw red after flicking a hand into the face of Chile defender Gonzalo Jara. Jara reacted theatrically but Ricci showed no hesitation in brandishing yellow and capping a miserable week for Paris Saint-Germain star Cavani, whose father was arrested on Monday night for his involvement in a fatal car crash. Uruguay reacted to Cavani's dismissal doggedly and

But as the match entered the final 10 minutes, Chile pounced on Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera's

failure to clear a cross. Playmaker Jorge Valdivia slipped a pass to Isla, who drilled in a low finish to spark wild celebrations for the hosts. It got worse for Uruguay a few minutes from time when Fucile clattered into Chile

players and officials protested but Ricci remained unmoved and the red card stood. Chile will now play the winner of today's quarterfinal between Bolivia and Peru in the last four.

‘BRICS U-17 Cup will promote CSR initiatives in India’ N

Former Portuguese International Simao is NEUFC marquee player G

UWAHATI: Former Portugese International and 2004 UEFA Euro finalist Simao Sabrosa was announced as the marquee player of the North East United FC for the second season of the Indian Super League football tournament. The former Atletico Madrid and Barcelona attacking midfielder will don the No 20 jersey, the club stated on its social media feeds. "I'm looking forward to the new challenge. The ISL has brought football in India to everybody's attention and I cannot wait to participate in it," the ex-Benfica man said. Revealing that the decision was to do with his several interactions with club owner and Bollywood star John Abraham, he said: "It felt that

the club is one big family and that everyone would love to have me as a member." The 35-year-old further said he spoke to John Capdevila, NEUFC's marquee player last season. "I'm training hard, every single day to be fitter and stronger before the season starts. Make no mistake about it, I come to India and NorthEast United FC to win." Capdevila was also excited and said: "He has played at the biggest stage in some of the world's most premier football competitions — World Cup, Euro and Champions League. He's a winner and I'm positive that he will pass his winning mentality on to the rest of the team." Simao began his career at the Sporting Club de Portu-

Mixed day for Indian shuttlers at Canada Open C

ALGARY (CANADA): Four Indian singles shuttlers, including B Sai Praneeth, and rising men's doubles pair of Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy reached the pre-quarterfinals of the Canada Open Grand Prix badminton tournament here. The 22-year-old Sai Praneeth, seeded 10th, streamrolled Czech Republic's Jan Frohlich 21-14 21-16 to set up a match against Niluka Karunaratne of Sri Lanka at the Markin MacPhail Centre here at the USD 50,000 event. STAVANGER (NORWAY): Former world champion Viswanathan Anand's plans worked to perfection as he put it across Jon Ludvig Hammer of Norway to jump within striking distance of Veselin Topalov after the end of the eighth and penultimate round of Norway Chess here. On what turned out to be a good day for Anand yet again, the Indian ace used the hidden dynamics out of a decent opening to beat Hammer, who was outdone under pressure. Grandmaster Anish Giri of Holland threw the tournament open for Anand as he beat Topalov in a long drawn game. In the other decisive game of the day, World champion Magnus Carlsen found his winning touch against Levon Aronian of Armenia. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France held Hikaru Nakamura to a draw, while Alxander Grischuk signed peace with Fabiano Caruana of Italy. Bulgaria's Topalov, on six points, still enjoys a half point lead over nearest-rival Anand and it will be a showdown between the two in the final round here. Topalov needs a draw with white but his style of chess is uncompromising, which might give Anand a chance to have a go against his 2010 world championship rival. It may be recalled that Anand had beaten Topalov with black in the famous 12th and final game of the 2010 world championship. Nakamura and Giri share the third spot on five points each, while Carlsen improved his statistics to jump to joint fifth along with Caruana and VachierLagrave on 3.5 points each. Aronian and Grischuk are joint eighth on three points, a full point ahead of lastplaced Hammer in this 10-player round-robin tournament that is a part of the Grand Chess tour. The confession box again came to the fore and it was graced by none other than Carlsen in the penultimate round. This is a unique concept here that allows players to share their thoughts during the course of the game.
