oted industrialist Ratan Tata figures among a list of three names proposed by IIT Bombay as the next chairman of its Board of Governors. The chairman's post fell vacant after the tenure of nuclear scientist Anil Kakodkar ended on May 11. The panel of three names have been received by the Human Resource Development Ministry for consideration and placing it before the President for approval, Ministry officials told PTI. The 77-year-old industrialist was a consulting professor in the Management Science and Engineering programme at the Stanford University and is also associated with the IIT Bombay, as a member of the premier institute's advisory council. Tata Education & Development Trust, a philanthropic arm of the Tata Group, had donated US $50 million to the Harvard Business School in 2010.

unil Nesarikar, who died on May 24 this year due to multiple organ failure at National Burns Centre (NBC) has had a bad heart condition, a colleague revealed on Monday. Nesarikar was also conscious about his health according to his colleague. P.A. Sawant, fire officer at Bandra Fire Station said that Nesarikar had suffered from two heart attacks before. “Whether he got those heart attacks while on duty or not that we cannot confirm. But he got appropriate treatment for the same,” said Sawant. When asked about where he received treatment for his heart condition, Sawant and certain fire officers didn't know the exact hospital he was treated in. Sawant also expressed that many firemen had hopes that Nesarikar would survive. “Yes we had hopes that Nesarikar would survive. Patients who suffer from 50 percent burns normally survive. But it is shocking to know that he died due to multiple organ failure,” said Sawant. Nesarikar, who was 52 years old and is survived by his mother Sunanda, wife Jayshree and son Sidhant was also very health conscious. “He was very fit. He used to go for walks regularly and

Dr. Sunil Keswani, Director at NBC said that Nesarikar didn't suffer from any heart attack during his treatment. “He died due to multiple organ failure and not due to heart attack. He didn't suffer any heart attack during the treatment too,” said Dr. Keswani. Nesarikar was admitted to the NBC on May 9 at 12 pm after being transferred from Masina Hospital in Byculla. The doctors reported that Nesarikar had suffered 50 per cent burns and a surgery was done to restore the blood supply to his injured parts which was successful. Nesarikar was taken for a second surgery for skin grafting on his lower extremes on May 12. He was to undergo a third surgery for skin grafting on May 19 but the doctors were unable to do so as he suffered from high fever and they had to delay the operation to stabilise his condition. Nesarikar was then supposed to be taken for the third surgery on May 24 but things didn't go as planned as his health deteriorated on May 23 and he was kept on a ventilator. The Lower Aqueduct to Jerusalem, which the Hasmonean kings constructed more than two thousand years ago in order to provide water to Jerusalem, operated intermittently until about one hundred years ago. The aqueduct begins at the 'En 'Eitam spring, near Solomon's Pools, south of Bethlehem, and is approximately 21 kilometres long. Despite its length, it flows

along a very gentle downward slope whereby the water level falls just one meter per kilometre of distance. At first, the water was conveyed inside an open channel and about 500 years ago, during the Ottoman period, a terra cotta pipe was installed inside the channel in order to better protect the water. The aqueduct's route was built in open areas in the past, but with the expansion

of Jerusalem in the modern era, it now runs through a number of neighbourhoods: Umm Tuba, Sur Bahar, East Talpiot and Abu Tor. Due to its historical and archaeological importance, the Israel Antiquities Authority is taking steps to prevent any damage to the aqueduct, and is working to expose sections of its remains, study them and make them accessible to the general public.

Watching 3D movies may boost brain power WATCHING movies in 3D may boost your brain power by sharpening cognitive skills and reaction times. In a study, participants showed a 23 percent increase in cognitive processing ability after watching a movie in 3D. Their reaction times improved by 11 percent and they experienced a 'brain boost' for up to 20 minutes after viewing. The improvement in reaction time was five times that experienced by participants who had been watching a 2D movie. It is a fact that people are living longer and there is a noticeable decline in cognitive brain function in old age, which can impair future quality of life. The initial results of the study indicate that 3D films may potentially play a role in slowing this decline. 3D movies could be used to help improve the performance of surgeons and other professionals requiring superlative cognitive brain function, such as boxers or tennis players. 3D provided more immersion for viewers than 2D, with a 7 percent uplift in engagement for viewers watching in stereoscope.

Leg movement is triggered by a connected receiver, and the process is so streamlined, it allows a patient to perform actions subconsciously. The implanted sensors send wireless signals to the artificial limb's built-in computer, enabling subconscious, real-time control and faster, more natural responses and movements. The new mind-controlled technology is designed to be compatible with its line of bionic feet, knees, and legs. These bionic prostheses are computerised smart limbs capable of real-time learning with the ability to adjust themselves to the wearer's gait as well as the walking speed and terrain. A coiled-wire receiver inside the prosthesis' cup picks up the impulses and transmits them wirelessly to the robotic limb.

Boasting of `1,550cr budget, MBMC’s only hospital in Mira Road is ailing
By Suresh Golani
T
he Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) boasts of a 1,551 crore budget, however it’s the only hospital in Mira Road that is ailing due to lack of diagnostic facilities. Built near Poonam Sagar complex, at a cost of more than Rs.7.5 crore, the double-storey Bharat Ratna Indira Gandhi Municipal Hospital constructed in an area of 15,000 sq.ft. became operational in 2011 and has a capacity of 50 beds. Considered to be referral hospital for smaller dispensaries in the twin-city, thanks to civic apathy, patients visiting the civic hospital are forced to get X-rays and Sonography tests done from private clinics. Subsequently, the poor patients
have to incur additional costs for the X-rays and Sonography tests which were given free of cost at the civic hospital. While the Sonography machine is lying out-of-order for more than a fortnight now the X-ray facility remains under-utilized most of the time due to the lack of a regular technician. “First of all the X-ray technician is underqualified for the job, secondly most of the times he does a disappearing act. When the X-ray machine started generated hazy reports, a company engineer was summoned who after inspections revealed that the exposure settings were improper,” revealed a medical attendant requesting anonymity. When contacted MBMC – Medical Officer- Dr. Pramod Padwal said, “It’s true that The ailing civic hospital in Mira Road.
due to the irregular presence of our technician, the X-ray machine though in perfect working condition is rarely used. The sonographgy machine has developed a technical snag and efforts were on to make a replacement soon, till it is repaired.” Although the hospital has an Out Patient (OPD) and InPatient Department, free medicines are given only to OPD patients while those admitted have to buy medicine from the open market. “The MBMC is bound to provide proper medical facilities to the local populace. If medicines have to purchased where will the poor patients go? questions Aam Admi Party, leaderSukhdev Benbansi.

Ponder awhile... “There are three kinds of intelligence: one kind understands things for itself, the other appreciates what others can understand, the third understands neither for itself nor through others. This first kind is excellent, the second good, and the third kind useless.” — Niccolo Machiavelli
The PM’s dreams I
T is a fact that during the last one year BJP rule there has been no scam by ministers and babus of the BJP government. While the previous UPA government incurred a huge loss by selling coal blocks without holding any auction, the BJP government has already raised Rs.3 lakh-crore through auctions. This is one of the plus points the BJP can claim on the completion of one year in office. The prime minister during his address at Mathura has produced a long list of steps taken by the government to assist the poor. He has mentioned the Prime Minister Yojana as one of the achievements during the year. He has also mentioned good schemes for the poor like ‘Atal Pension’ which can help crores of the poor. In his address he made it a point to refer to the assistance given to farmers by his government. The prime minister, however, did not bother to refer to price hike. This is one of his major poll promises. There does not seem to have been any pragmatic programme to bring down prices of all essential articles. He declares he works for the poor but his government has done nothing to bring down prices. In fact, they keep going up. There has been a steep fall in the value of the rupee. The find that a small boy is working in the home of a minister of the BJP government shows that the prime minister is building only dreams and hiding existing actualities.

HAVE not been able to make out why General Pervez Musharraf, who is under house arrest on charge of treason, has made a public speech on the Kargil war which I watched on a television channel. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif must be under pressure from the army to allow Musharraf to propagate an account which is not factually correct. Surely, Nawaz Sharif remembers how he was removed through a coup staged by General Musharraf. Yet, the Pakistan Prime Minister sought US President Bill Clinton’s intervention on July 4, the US Independence Day, when Clinton was too occupied, for the safe passage of the Pakistani soldiers. They had been hopelessly surrounded by the Indian forces at the Kargil heights. President Clinton telephoned then Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee to request him to let the Pakistani soldiers go without any reprisal.

rorists and infiltrators. This has been New Delhi’s allegation all along. But Islamabad was denying it. Musharraf’s speech is meant for the Pakistani audience to rehabilitate himself in his own country which blames him for the debacle in 1999. His claim that he had got India “by the throat” is without any evidence and out of the sneering remarks he evokes in his country. The Indian commanders of those days have vehemently denied Musharraf’s claim. His purpose is to deny the facts and put the
Dangerous standoff In fact, President Clinton in his book, My Life, recorded the event in these words: “Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of Pakistan called and asked if he could come to Washington on July 4 to discuss the dangerous standoff with India that had begun several weeks earlier when Pakistani forces under the command of General Pervez Musharraf had crossed the LoC which had been the recognized and generally observed boundary between India and Pakistan in Kashmir since 1972. Sharif was concerned that the situation Pakistan had created was getting out of control and he hoped to use my good offices to resolve the crisis.” The President also recalled in the book that “Sharif’s moves were perplexing because that February, Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had travelled to Lahore to promote bilateral talks aimed at resolving the Kashmir problem and other differences. By crossing the LoC, Pakistan had wrecked the talks.” Still, Musharraf has the audacity to say that Pakistan had “caught India by the throat” at Kargil. He claimed to have raised a “second force.” This is the first time that Musharraf has admitted about the “second force,” the motley section of non-state actors, including the ter-
BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar blame on the Pakistani politicians to assert that they have converted a military victory into a defeat. The fact is that Musharraf's antics made Pakistan face a humiliating defeat. True, he was able to station the infiltrators on top of the Kargil heights. But the Indian forces, after heavy losses, turned the tide and captured not only the Kargil heights but also thousands of Pakistani soldiers. Yes, it did take us much too long to gear up to it. The plan on the offensive by our army was not ready till America had mooted a proposal for the withdrawal of the intruders. Although at a disadvantage, the Indian forces showed grit and fought bravely. The air force coordinated well. India had cleared twothirds of the occupied territory when Pakistan asked the intruders to return home. There was miscalculation on the part of Pakistan’s top brass that it could demarcate another LoC to its advantage. Just as New Delhi never gave out how much territory it lost, Islamabad too did not tell
‘Be more sensitive as one evolves’ Q
uestion: Can love exceed wisdom or can wisdom exceed love? What happens in either case? Is love measured according to love, or is wisdom according to love? It is true that wise is loving and loving is wise, although in a person wisdom may be predominant and in another love. But both love and wisdom are needed. The cold-hearted man is never wise, and the really warmhearted person is never foolish. Yet both these qualities, love and wisdom, are distinct and separate, and it is possible that a person may be loving but lacking wisdom, and it happens that a person who is wise may be lacking love to some extent. But no one can be wise if love is absent from his heart – call him clever. And no one will be truly loving if wisdom has not illuminated his heart, for love comes from wisdom and wisdom comes from love. It is very difficult to say what love is and how one can love. Is it embracing people and running after them and saying sweet words to them? What could one show when one is loving? – for every person has a different way of expressing his love. One person perhaps has love hidden in his heart which does not man-
ifest, and another person's love comes out in his words and actions. The love of one person rises like vapour and charges the whole atmosphere, and another person's love is like a spark hidden in a stone: outside the stone is cold, inside there is a spark. Therefore to judge who has love and who has not is not in the power of every person, it is a very difficult thing. For instance love is a
MATTER & SPIRIT fire rising from a cracker calling out, 'I am love!', but it burns out and is finished. There is also fire in the pebble which never manifests. If you hold the pebble it feels cold, yet at the same time the fire is there. Some day you can strike it and it is there, it lasts. As many people as there are, so many are the different qualities of their love, and one cannot judge. Is jealousy inseparable from human love? It is like asking, 'Is the shadow separable from the body?' Where there is form there is shadow; where there is human love there is jealousy.
about its reverses. The Tiger Hill had been recaptured by India when Pakistan briefed the media that the mujahedeen control on the Tiger Hill was intact. Had the Pakistanis been kept informed on the reverses, their feeling of humiliation would not have been as deep as it is today. The problem with Musharraf is how to rehabilitate himself in the eyes of Pakistanis. They know how he embarrassed the army with the ignoble defeat at Kargil. And they have not forgiven him. Thank God, the Pakistan media has not been taken in by his claim. He continues to be in the dog house and his latest diatribe has been noted without any comment of support. But this is not the dominant discussion in Pakistan today. The denial of passport to Syed Shah Geelani, a separatist leader, is catching up all the attention. It is being argued that he should not be forced to spell out his nationality because he is a subject of Jammu & Kashmir, a “disputed territory.”
Geelani has changed Geelani has changed in the last few years. Earlier, he felt little hesitation in pronouncing his nationality as Indian. Some years ago when I used to meet him regularly, he never raised the issue. Even though he belongs to Jamiat-i-Islamia, he wore his nationalist credentials on his sleeve. Why has he tilted towards Pakistan is something that requires a deeper study. He is generally not a person who is swayed by emotions. What India has to look into is the reason for his tilt. Maybe, there are many Geelanis in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. Why have they not changed in the last 70 years when Kashmir acceded to India? Is it religion? If this were so, the Kashmiri Muslims would not have been greatly upset when there was a proposal to have a separate colony for the Kashmiri Pandits. “They are part of us,” the Kashmir Muslims would say and they would “live in our midst” as they used to do earlier. Kashmiriyat is a product of Sufism which is a synthesis of religious values of Islam and Hinduism. Maybe, after the accession, India has forgotten those values. The need is to refurbish them, not to get lost in parochial ideology. Love can bring out what is worst and best in man. Love can take many forms, even that of indifference. I remember I went once for a relative to the house of a physician, an Indian physician who had a very ancient method of writing his prescriptions. Each took him nearly ten minutes. I was shown into a small room where fifteen to twenty people were already waiting, and I sat down among them. He continued to write prescriptions for all who came, and when he had finished with those who were before me he began to write prescriptions for those who had come after me. I had thought that the physician, as a friend of the family, would have seen me first, but he went on until he had seen everyone, and I was the last. Finally, he said to me, 'Now tell me what you have to say'. I told him, and he wrote out the prescription without any haste, and when I was leaving he said, 'I hope you understand that I did not want to see you while all the other patients were still there. I wanted to see you at leisure'. He was doing me a favour, and though he tried my patience it was still a majestic sort of favour. It gave me a good example of love in the form of indifference. With indifference one still must have sympathy and love – be more and more sensitive as one evolves. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

Buildings lack safety norms AT least 95 percent of buildings, which include some of the posh high rise multi-storied localities of the city, do not comply with fire fighting mechanisms and this is an area of grave concern of bigger fire tragedies waiting to happen than the Kalbadevi incident that claimed many lives. Corruption rules roost in our system and most permissions are granted even though they don't adhere to safety norms by greasing palms of politicians, various officials and authorities. Forget internal safety mechanisms inside the premises, some buildings are constructed in busy localities where even the fire brigades cannot reach in case of an mishap. Roads and lanes in some places are so narrow that even ambulances cannot enter them leave about water tankers and fire brigades. We must have strict laws in place. Baghdadi’s threat THE globally notorious ISIS terrorist al-Baghdadi’s latest threat of the nuclear bomb attack on the US with the help of Pakistan, says a lot about the latter country ‘ruled’ by ISI and its army. This is the high time for the US to realize the importance of India compared to Pakistan. Shockingly, the Obama administration has also never realized the relations between China and Pakistan till date. Under such circumstances, the US must stop each and every kind of aid to Pakistan on war footing, check Pakistan’s nuclear policies, its relations with China and destroy all Pakistan-backed terror groups like LeT, JuD, their training camps, hideouts, arms, ammunition in Pakistan and also in Pakistan occupied Kashmir as well as kill Lakhvi, Hafiz Saeed and Baghdadi immediately. Had our former CM, Vilasrao Deshmukh, been alive today his family, friends, near and dear ones would have celebrated his 70th birthday. Deshmukh was gem of a person. He never differentiated between the elite and the common man. He gave his reception to all at Varsha and Mantralaya, regardless of elite, poor, cast, creed and party barriers. For Vilasrao every visitor was a blessing towards him with whom he reacted in a kind, gentle and graceful manner. It has been verily said that history repeats itself. If you go by his family I can find the caring and sharing qualities like the father in his son Riteish Deshmukh. Although fields are different, Deshmukh was a politician and his son a successful Bollywood actor but when Riteish speaks we can
Vilasrao Deshmukh never differentiated between the elite and the aam aadmi see the shadow of Vilasrao Deshmukh in him. May his soul RIP. — Fayyaz S. Pathan, Dahisar

How much do you really know about the treadmill that you use every day? That’s what we thought! Anindra Siqueira & Dev Goswami tell you everything that you need to know about the different machines at your gym
A
gym membership may be expensive, but what you get out of it is the opportunity to work with all those shiny machines that promise to help you acquire a chiseled physique. However, if you try work the same muscles at home with dumbbells and other, simpler exercise sets, you’ll find it nearly impossible to rock the same, toned look. At the same time, you need to know how to use the machines in order to get that lean chest and stunning abs you’ve seen on your favourite sportsman. Every machine has dangers or risks of injury associated with it, so you’ll also need to keep certain precautions in mind while working out on them. We break it down for you, with the help of Dr. Chirag Sethi, fitness and nutrition expert at Anytime Fitness, India.
Cardio No gym routine is complete without some form of cardio exercise. Running (or jogging) and cycling are easy exercises that will get your heart pumping. They keep you active (if not fully fit) and are good for your overall health.
Treadmill & exercise cycle While you don’t need to visit a gym to go running or cycling, working out on the treadmill or on an exercise bike is good for your leg muscles. The advantage of using these machines, Dr. Chirag tells us, is that they don’t stress your lower back, knee or hip, unlike other machines that you’ll find at a gym. But, since they involve you performing activities without weights, they burn fewer calories. Still, can using a treadmill or an exercise bike cause injury? Here’s what Dr. Chirag has to say about using the cardio machines in your gym — “There’s nothing much you can do wrong on a stationary bike. However, don’t slouch too much.” Continued on pg 14 «

Treadmill & exercise leg machines When it comes to building a good physique, most people tend to focus almost single-mindedly on their arms and chest, but you must remember that your leg muscles are large and need to be worked out too. You don’t want to end up looking like Johnny Bravo, do you? Leg exercise machines include extension and curl machines, the leg press, leg adduction and abduction machines and calf machines. Most take you through isolated movements and target specific muscle groups, so they are ideal for beginners. However, when you’re using any machines that exercise your leg muscles, make sure that you use the right amount of weight; don’t attach heavy weights that you are not used to, Dr. Chirag cautions.
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, MAY 26, 2015 >>Chest fly machines target your chest as well as your shoulders
leg extension & curl Dr. Chirag says, “These machines target the quadriceps and hamstring muscles and allow good isolation movements specifically for these muscle groups.” However, if you’re using these machines he warns that you should take care not to lock your knee when you stretch your legs out. You should also be careful when lifting up from the platform. A common mistake that people make when using this machine, he adds, is that they do it just before they perform a squat or a lunge.
leg press Leg press machines simulate the squat and work on your hip and thigh muscles. Dr. Chirag explains, “The machines provide supported movements and help to build your strength, so they are best used before you move on to unsupported movements such as squats.”
chEsT
rowing machine Rowing machine workouts may look strenuous, but in fact, they offer a low-impact form of exercise. However, they do work your entire body, especially your core and your arms. One of the biggest benefits of using a rowing machine is that it doesn’t pound your joints and so, reduces your risk of suffering an injury while working out. But, you must remember that it will take a while to learn the correct technique of using a rowing machine — you need good grip and posture in order to ensure that you don’t slip and/or injure yourself. Another point you must bear in mind before using a rowing machine is that no part of your body should be indisposed — this machine engages your upper as well as lower body and so, even if you’ve hurt your toe, using a rowing machine will prove difficult.
back adduction & abduction machines
The muscles of your back are quite difficult to target, and you’ll mostly need cables to work them.
These machines focus on your hip and on certain thigh muscles that don’t play a major role in everyday movements and aren’t targeted by regular exercises such as squats. However, if you use the adduction and abduction machines to shape your body, you should remember to choose appropriate weights, since these muscles aren’t meant to be exercised in this manner every day. Their primary function is to stabilise your body, so targeting them too much could lead to injury.
chest fly & butterfly machines These machines not only target your chest muscles but also focus on your biceps and deltoids (shoulder muscles). However, if you overuse these machines you could injure your shoulder as they also stretch your shoulder muscles.
chest press These machines simulate push-ups, and let you isolate the movement you want to focus on, helping you target a specific muscle or muscle group. The great thing about a chest press machine is that it’s relatively risk-free and you can use it without a spotter. However, the downside is that even if you push with only one of your arms, both bars will move. This means that it is possible to put more force on one arm, leading to disproportionate muscle development.
cable crossover You may have seen people in your gym pulling on cables attached to strong metal supports. The most common cable type is the cable crossover, which targets the muscles of your chest. However, since you are required to move the cables manually, these types of exercises are unsupported, and if done incorrectly, could strain certain muscles.
calf press & calf raise machines These machines target the calves and muscles of your shin. The only potential danger of using these machines is that since the calf muscle takes a lot to work out, you may end up straining your back and shoulders.
ExErcisE ball Exercise balls is among of the best exercise equipment to use, not only because it can lower your risk of suffering from an injury, but also because it adds intensity to your workouts, making them more effective and giving you better results. From crunches and push-ups to squats and planks, you can use an exercise ball for a number of exercises in a variety of ways. The best part is that they do not have many disadvantages, apart from the fact that you need to learn how to use them correctly. Maintaining your balance and ensuring that the exercise ball is stable throughout the exercise may be a little difficult at first, but with proper training and practice, it will prove to be a great addition to your workout.
arms & Torso Exercises such as push-ups, pull-ups and planks usually suffice to target the muscles of your arms and torso. But, whether it’s because you want to raise the intensity of your workout or because you want a particularly ripped body, you may feel the need to use the following machines. Here’s what you should know about them.
ab machines There are two popular ab machines you can work out on — an ab twister machine and an ab crunch machine. However, you probably won’t find either of these at gyms — and for good reason. Ab machines have been panned in the fitness world for unnecessarily promoting the risk of injury. The ab twister machine, for example, has you twisting your spine in an unnatural manner, putting you at risk of damaging your spine. On the other hand, the ab crunch machine, which uses weights to provide extra resistance, can flex your lower back in an unnatural manner, leading to injuries. The only plus point of using these machines is that they add variety to your workout; they don’t really do much in terms of building your midriff. If you really must use an equipment to make your crunches more intense, either use an ab roller or an exercise ball (see box).
While people mainly train their efforts on their biceps, most also want to have an attractive front. And so, the chest workout is among the most popular exercises.
>> The lat pulldown machine targets your mid and lower back
lat pulldown machine This fairly common machine targets the muscles of your mid and lower back, called the latissimus dorsi, or lats for short. Dr. Chirag explains that this is one of the safer ways to work these muscles. However, the dangers of this machine lie in using it incorrectly. Never pull the bar down behind your back; the bar should come down to your chest or collar bone area.

If you love dark chocolate, Yamini Walia has a great reason for you to rejoice — it’s healthy! She gives you reasons to eat dark chocolate without feeling an ounce of guilt
Dark siDe nEW REsEaRch
Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants and flavonoids, which makes it a superfood. But, if you thought that was its only benefit, think again. A study that was conducted by researchers from Northern Arizona University (NAU), which was recently published in the journal NeuroRegulation, found that dark chocolate can boost alertness and increase your attention span. Larry Stevens, a professor of psychological sciences at NAU and the lead author of the study, was quoted as saying, “Chocolate is indeed a stimulant and it activates the brain in a special way. It can increase attention characteristics in your brain and also significantly affects blood pressure levels.” The study involved 122 participants, all of whom were either fed dark chocolate with high cacao levels or a placebo. The team then analysed their electroencephalography (EEG) results to measure brain activity. The participants, aged18 to 25-years-old, were required to perform cognitive tasks in order to see if there was any improvement amongst those who ate ark chocolate. Not only was the chocolate able to boost their attention span, it also had the ability to help them find peace and lower blood pressure in turn. Larry adds, “A lot of us get a little fuzzy and can’t pay attention in the afternoon, particularly students. So, we could have a higher cacao content chocolate bar and it would increase attention. People don’t generally eat chocolate and think it’s going to be healthy for them.”
thE hEalth bEnEfits If you’re still doubtful about the benefits of dark chocolate, here are a few more healthy reasons to keep eating it. n improves your memory After a certain age, it’s natural to lose track of where you put your socks, or why you dialed a particular number. In such situations, dark chocolate can prove to be effective, as it is believed to improve your memory. Thank the flavanols and antioxidants present in cocoa, for it! n fight free radicals Since dark chocolate comes from the cacao plant, its benefits are passed on to
us. This antioxidant-rich food helps fight free radicals, which are unstable oxygen molecules that are believed to be responsible for ageing and diseases such as cancer and heart disease. n increase good cholesterol Dark chocolate helps to reduce cholesterol because of its high cocoa butter content. Cocoa butter contains oleic acid, which is a mono-unsaturated fat — the same fat that you find in heart-healthy olive oil. n lower your blood pressure Apart from the claims of the study that we just explained, a German study involving more than 19,000 people also found that eating chocolate helps lower blood pressure, and in turn, the risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease. A widespread analysis of numerous studies surrounding the subject, conducted by Australian researchers, also found limited but noticeable blood pressure benefits from eating the superfood. n clear out foggy vision Researchers from the University of Reading in England tested the eyesight of 30 adults, aged between 18 and 25-years-old, after they ate white and dark chocolate. The subjects performed better on vision tests after eating the dark variant. The reason is that the flavanols in dark chocolate, which improve blood flow to the brain, are believed to improve blood flow to the retina as well.

Do you have dull, sallow nails? Anindra Siqueira tells you what foods you should be eating to keep them healthy
K

eeping your nail healthy begins with your diet. Though your nails are made of keratin (a tough protein) and are essentially dead, keeping them in tip-top shape doesn’t include just a regular trip to your manicurist. Applying nail polish will cover up imperfections, but it won’t solve the problem either. However, you can make sure that your nails are healthy by eating right. Here are five of the best foods that will help you keep your nails healthy.
What aren’t these good for?! Green leafy vegetables are a good source of vitamins A, D, E and K, B-vitamins, and are even rich in iron. Vegetables such as spinach and broccoli also provide magnesium, calcium and potassium — all of which benefit your nails.
WhEy pRotEin
Since your nails are made of protein, any food that is rich in protein will be good for them. However, eggs also contain vitamin D and a Bcomplex vitamin called Biotin, which plays an important role in the formation of keratin in your body.
While this is not strictly a food, it’s important to consume it in order to help your nails grow in a healthy manner. You can find whey protein in common foods such as curd and cheese. In fact, the liquid that you see on top of curd is one of the richest sources of whey protein! Milk also contains whey protein in small amounts.
REd mEats
almonds
Eggs
We all know that meat contains protein, but red meats are also high in another nutrient that is essential for healthy nails — iron. This doesn’t give you the license to eat a juicy steak every day or champion the cause to bring beef back to the city. Eating too much red meat has its downsides too, since it can lead to heart trouble.
>> Keeping your nails healthy involves more than just going for regular manicures
Apart from containing a large amount of plant protein, almonds are also rich in magnesium and calcium, both of which are involved in keeping your nails healthy. While calcium is necessary if you want to maintain strong bones and nails, magnesium keep you hair and nails in good shape.

Head to the bar Whether it’s a wedding reception or a house party, there’s always one guest who seems to have taken on the responsibility of getting everyone (and himself!) drunk. All you need to do is make a beeline for the bar the moment you see them coming your way. They’ll be satisfied that you’re getting a drink and will move on to other targets. ‘I can’t hold my liquor’ When someone asks you about why you are not drinking, tell them about your condition — where the more you drink, the more frequently you visit the bathroom. To prevent this from turning into a serious conversation, make sure to add that treatment is ongoing and that you will be cured soon.
« Ten fun ways To
‘I have to perform neurosurgery tomorrow’ Of course, this won’t work on your friends or acquaintances who know you personally. But, when you’re at a party where you don’t know and don’t plan on getting to know any of the attendees, this excuse will work great. Just put on a self-important look whenever someone comes asking about your drink and utter this in a dismissive manner. There’s no comeback to this, giving you enough time to skulk away quietly. ‘I... what... wink?’ This is akin to throwing a Hail Mary. When nothing seems to keep everyone from trying to get you drunk, it’s time to fall back on the most basic of excuses — I’m already so drunk! But, don’t say it! That is hardly believable. Act as though you’re drunk — start slurring whenever someone tries to talk to you, pretend as though you don’t understand what they’re saying and wobble a bit if you need to. Remember to do this towards the end of the party, because maintaining the act for more than an hour will be difficult.
4

‘I can’t hear you!!!’ Don’t try this when you’re at a relaxed party with a Coldplay mix playing on a low volume in the background. But, when Nicky Minaj’s Superbass is being played on full volume, it gives you a great way to avoid drinking. Picture this: Someone comes up to you, asking about your drink. You shout back ‘I can’t hear you!’ After four or five attempts, they finally hear what you’re saying. So, they drag you to an isolated spot, far away from the speakers. Then they ask you again about your drink. You answer, ‘Oh yeah, I was just about to get one.’ But, by now, they’ve probably lost interest.

5
say no To alcohol So, you’ve decided to cut down on the amount of alcohol that you consume. But, how are you going to deal with the people who can’t stand the sight of you without a drink in your hand? Dev Goswami has a few suggestions!
6
9
‘I’m training for the marathon’ This excuse works because it catches the attention of friends and hosts — and they will start talking about someone they know who participated in one, or, how they wish they were healthier. Of course, this will not work if you’re someone they know who wouldn’t participate in anything that involves walking more than half a kilometre.
‘I’ll fall asleep’ You know what’s worse than not drinking at a party? Dozing off while everyone is still on the dance floor! Say this with enough conviction and the statement will work on anyone — from your best friend to the host. They’d rather have you up and about than sprawled across a sofa in a corner of the house.
7
‘Oh hey there!’ Only follow this tip if you’re prepared to come across as a little rude at a large gathering. When someone walks up to you, demanding to know where your drink is, smile at them for a second, pretend that you’re about to answer their question and then look away as though you suddenly noticed someone. Excuse yourself and disappear into the crowd calling after this ‘friend’ of yours.
8
‘I can’t drink this brand’ Another excuse that is perfect for strangers — tell them that you work at a spirits company and that you can’t afford to be caught drinking anything made by a competing brand as that may put your job at risk. Say this with a straight face and the person who was badgering you to drink will be astounded.
The classic — ‘I am the designated driver.’ A simple excuse (it doesn’t have to be an excuse, if you actually offer to be the designated driver), this one will always work. The best part is that you won’t have to explain yourself and you won’t even be troubled by the same person again. However, if this doesn’t work, and your friends still badger you to get a drink, we think that you should really reconsider the kind of people you hang out with!

>> Colouring your hair frequently may lead to hair damage
Maintaining your coloured hair is not easy, especially if you don’t know enough about it. While you can enjoy glossy, coloured locks for the first few days after a new treatment, neglect and lack of knowledge can leave you with problems such as dry, brittle hair, fading hair colour and even colours changing hue! So, take a look at the answers below to see if you know just about enough to maintain your coloured hair.
1) Answer: A. True Most salons instruct you to delay washing your hair for at least 48 hours after a hair colouring treatment. Hair colours contain chemicals, that open up the hair cuticles in order to allow proper absorption of hair colour. So, you need to allow your hair to soak in the hair colour for as long as possible to make it last longer.
2) Answer: b. True Clarifying shampoos give your hair a squeaky clean feeling as they are formulated especially to eliminate grease and product buildup in your hair. In the process of cleaning your scalp, these shampoos will also strip your hair of the colour, causing it to fade out sooner than it is supposed to.
Colour ready Colouring your hair can be fun, but maintaining is hard work. Sara Shah suggests you take this quiz to see if you know enough about taking care of coloured hair

But, while there are certain rules that you need to follow, when you’re colouring your hair, you also need to learn how to maintain the colour afterwards. Take our quiz to see if you are doing coloured hair maintenance right. 1) You should avoid using clarifying shampoos on coloured hair. a) True. b) False. 2) You should wait for at least 48

3) Answer: b. FAlse You need to use a conditioner after shampooing your hair. Hair dyes and colouring treatments contain chemicals that strip your hair of moisture and damage the cuticles, leaving it dry and brittle. Conditioners help to add and retain that moisture and even work to preserve your hair colour for a longer duration.
4) Answer: A. True Yes, you need to use shampoos and conditioners that have been specially formulated for coloured and treated hair. Their main purpose is to preserve hair colour and also to enhance it over time by helping the molecules of the hair dye to set better.
5) Answer: b. FAlse You may not normally wear a cap when you go swimming, but if your hair is coloured, you need to prevent it from coming in contact with chlorine, especially if you have just dyed your hair. Chlorine can react badly with the colour in your hair and is even known to alter the colour!
6) Answer: b. FAlse Hot, steamy showers can be heavenly, but if you want to maintain your hair colour, steer clear of them. Hot water opens up the cuticles of your hair and can cause the colour to bleed out.
7) Answer: A. True When you decide to colour your hair, avoid multiple treatments in one sitting. The chemicals that are in hair colours can be overwhelming for your hair and lead to problems such as product buildup and dryness.
8) Answer: b. FAlse You should always wait for at least three weeks before getting a root touch up or any other colouring treatment, as the structure of your hair is weak for a while after it has been coloured. As we mentioned above, hair colours contain cuticle-opening chemicals that lead to permanent damage of the hair structure.

What do filmstar Leonardo DiCaprio and comedian Adam DeVine have in common? A dad bod! Yamini Walia & Sara Shah tell you more about the trend and ask a few trainers what they think

en who sport washboard abs should watch out there’s a new, more coveted physique in town! Make way for men whose bodies are a perfect balance between a beer belly and some light working out — the dad bod! The hot trend celebrates a male body type that is soft, rounded and based on the belief that fathers don’t need to worry about a sculpted physique. We spoke to a few fitness experts to find out more about the trend.
The DaD BoD TrenD Up until now, no one was sure about what the dad bod really was. After all, everyone has a different body type. All we knew so far was that the term was used to describe actors such as Seth Rogan, Leonardo Di Caprio and Mad Men’s Jon Hamm, who aren’t necessarily fat, but do have a slightly-rounded and less chiselled appearance. Women across the world seem to find this appealing, mostly because compared to well-built, fit physiques, men with dad bods made them feel less insecure about themselves. Although you may commend the dad bod trend for making men feel like they don’t need to go to extreme measures just to look good, it hasn’t come without criticism. In fact, critics of the trend believe that the dad bod is simply an excuse to put off exercise and serves as an excellent excuse to be lazy.
WhaT experTs Think Asif Khan, program manager for the Fitness Transformation Program at JW Marriott Mumbai, thinks that the dad bod is a good way to achieve a balance between a normal lifestyle and a fitness regime. “If you’re not aiming to gain muscle, but want to get rid of excess fat, the dad bod is perfect for you. You can follow a healthy lifestyle from Monday to Friday and treat yourself over the weekend.” he says. He considers Bollywood actors such as Akshay Kumar, Arjun Rampal and Saif Ali Khan as the perfect example of the dad
bod. “To achieve any kind of transformation, you should focus on how to balance your nutrition intake,” he explained when we asked about the best way to achieve this physique. He suggests eating plenty of lean protein, including eggs, fish and chicken, along with healthy fats such as avocado salad, flax seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, fish oil, and salmon oil. “Avoid consuming excess sugar, grains, dairy, artificial sugar, aerated drinks and junk food in order to maintain a lean profile. You can do some slow cardio to lose a little weight and burn more fat, like taking an early morning walk for 30 minutes or occasionally doing power yoga and pilates at home.” he suggests. Vikas Jain, managing director of Anytime Fitness, on the other hand, isn’t on board with the dad bod trend. He says “I would advise against the dad bod trend and believe that it shouldn’t be followed, as it is important to stay healthy and fit. I’m not saying that we should force men into doing Cross Fit so that they develop six pack abs. The dad bod is a reinforcement of inequality — especially between men and women. While women have to go to the gym and watch every single calorie that they consume, men are free to let themselves get lazy, neglect the gym, chow down on pizza and beer and still expect their partners to be fit.” He also suggests that such a trend could actually be unfair to women and possibly downright sexist. We’re waiting for someone to balance the scales with a mum bod trend.
« know more Performing the kettlebell swing
The kettlebell swing is a great exercise — it helps to increase power and muscular endurance! However, it’s also one that is usually performed incorrectly. Dev Goswami tells you more
I
f you think that we’ve been making typos by writing, ‘kettlebell,’ you need to get your basics clear before you think of performing this exercise. It is in fact a kettlebell and not kettleball as most people call it. And, that’s not the only misconception surrounding the kettlebell swing, which is an effective way to lose fat, build muscle and increase endurance. Because of how this exercise looks, it is a conceivable mistake to assume that it involves using arm strength. However, the fact is that your thighs and hamstrings are what power this exercise. Confused? Read on as we tell you how to perform a kettlebell swing correctly.

with the kettlebell placed between your feet.

Remember to choose a weight that allows you to perform the exercise while maintaining the correct posture and still challenging you. Squat, gripping the kettlebell with your palms facing you. Stand up straight, so that the kettlebell is hanging somewhere around your groin — make sure that your arms are straight. Your arms should be loose and your shoulders should be retracted. Remember that they won’t play a big role when you’re performing this exercise, they just help you to hold the kettlebell and carry the momentum. Bend your knees and lower your bottom slightly — your bodyweight should be transferred on to your heels. Simultaneously lower your torso towards the

floor (make sure that your back is straight) and move the kettlebell between your thighs so that it is in line with your bottom. Now, in one swift motion, drive through your heels and use your hips to lift the kettlebell up in the air, till it is at eye level. Make sure that you perform this action using your thighs and hips to power you and not your arms — it’s a swing, not a pull. Let the weight of the kettlebell do all the work as it comes back down, and prepare your body for another rep. Drive through your heels again and use the power of your hips to raise the kettlebell. For an alternate, slightly more intense version, you can lift the kettlebell till it’s above your head, instead of just at eye level, before bringing it back down.

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, MAY 26, 2015 >> Close proximity to electronic devices can cause visual fatigue syndrome
Nocturnal enuresis, which is a condition that causes adults to suffer from bedwetting issues, is not discussed too often, but it’s slowly becoming a common problem. Yamini Walia tells you more
Y
ou may believe that bedwetting is a problem that affects just children, but you’ll be surprised to find that it affects several teenagers and adults as well. In most cases, people hide the condition from their families to avoid embarrassment. But, you need to understand that bedwetting should be addressed as soon as it becomes a regular occurrence, because it can be a sign of an underlying illness or disease. Take a look at its causes and what you can do to solve the problem.
Causes While there’s no specific reason for bedwetting to occur, there are a number of factors that can play a role, leading you to suffer from this condition. We shed light on a few of these: sleeping tablets Sleeping tablets can put you in a state where you may not even realise when your bladder is full. Ask your doctor whether you really need sleeping medication or if you can reduce the dosage in order to avoid wetting the bed at night. Diabetes If you suffer from diabetes, your blood sugar levels are going to be high. In order to combat these levels, your kidneys creates a higher amount of sugary urine, causing you to urinate frequently through the day as well as the night. Diuretic medicines Diuretic medication can effectively treat high blood pressure as well as certain heart problems. However, since this kind of medication encourages your kidney to produce more urine, it’s advisable to avoid taking it at bedtime.
Lack of muscle and nerve control If your bladder hasn’t developed or lacks the required nerve and muscle control, then your muscles will contract and empty your bladder when it’s just half full. This can make you urinate as you sleep, without you realising it. Consult your doctor for a solution.
What shouLD I Do? Apart from visiting a doctor, there are a few other precautions you can take to solve this problem. Read on to find out what you can do. speak up First, you need to understand that this is not your fault. So, don’t blame yourself or feel embarrassed about it. Remember that no one can look at you and figure out that you suffer from this problem. Cut down on alcohol Excessive consumption of alcohol, especially before bedtime, weakens your bladder and will lead to you passing urine when you’re asleep. So, cut down on the amount of alcohol that you drink. use an alarm clock Confused about how an alarm clock will help you avoid wetting the bed? Use it to wake up a couple of hours after going to bed, and a couple of hours before you usually wake up, so that you can use the bathroom. Switch the time around every few days to avoid getting into the habit of using the bathroom at the same time every night. a different environment Some sort of change always helps! So, try sleeping in a different bed or in a different room, as it may help you avoid wetting the bed at night.
DoCtor speak
“Bed wetting can be an embarrassing issue. About 2% of adults suffer from bedwetting, according to the National Association for Continence. Congestive heart failure, dementia and diabetes are some of the disorders that can cause this condition. Evidence has also shown that bed-wetting is hereditary. Bedwetting that stems from a medical condition requires treatment beyond lifestyle adjustments. Medication can treat a variety of conditions of which bedwetting is a symptom. Food items such as potatoes, green gram, chocolates, tea, coffee and spicy foods that produce gas should be restricted. Liquid food should not be consumed for a few hours before bedtime. Bladder stretching exercises help a lot to combat this situation. The important thing is to stay in touch with the emotions and take positive action before stress expresses itself through bedwetting. ” — Dr.Anil Patil, MBBS MD, a pioneer in integrated medicine and yoga guru

Visual fatigue syndrome
Most of us use computers, smartphones and other gadgets for several hours every day. But, can this lead to visual fatigue syndrome? Anindra Siqueira tells you more about the condition
Y
ou may not feel it, but spending long hours in front of a computer can strain your eyes. Add smartphones and gadgets such as tablets, which literally emit light (from tiny light sources) directly on to your retinas, to the mix and it’s easy to see why the visual fatigue syndrome is becoming a common problem. But, what exactly is this condition? The American Optometric Association defines visual fatigue syndrome as eye and vision problems that stem from excessive computer use. Forget the technical sounding name and scientific definition; visual fatigue syndrome is essentially a condition that occurs because you’re constantly focussing on objects that are one to three feet away from your eyes. This is not the natural viewing distance and so, it strains your eye muscles. The good news though, is that the symptoms, which include headaches, loss of focus, eye pain, a burning sensation in your eyes, dry eyes and blurred vision, are all treatable. The syndrome can also affect parts of your body other than your eyes, leading to shoulder or neck pain and overall fatigue, which can result in a loss of productivity at work. The reason that visual fatigue occurs may be simple to grasp — staring at computer and cell phone screens for too long. However, understanding it is a little more complex. When your eye focuses on an object that is too close, called a near or intermediate image, certain muscles in your eye socket that control the movement of your eyeball contract and your pupils get constricted. This movement causes the lens in your eye to bulge, enabling you to focus on what you’re looking at. When you focus on a near or intermediate object, these muscles are in a constant state of contraction. If you stay in this state for too long, these muscles will get fatigued. They then relax and your vision gets blurred, you experience dry eyes and there may be pain around eyes. You could even suffer from headaches. A simple way to avoid, or at least reduce, visual fatigue syndrome is to take a break and focus on objects that are far away. Also, make sure that your screen is about 20-26 inches away from your eyes and use a glare filter on it. Make sure that you get a sufficient amount of sleep every night, because inadequate sleep can also lead to tired eye muscles.

>> Keloids occur due to an aggressive healing process of a wound
Scars can be rather bothersome, especially if they’ve been present for a while and refuse to heal. Sara Shah tells you how to deal with a few common types of scars
E
very scar probably has a story to tell. In most cases, scars are the result of a misadventure or a life-changing event. Then there are minor scars, which are the possible result of minor burns, cuts or bruises. And, unless you are aiming for a rugged, rough look, these scars can be unappealing, and can lower your self esteem. Read on as we tell you about the common types of scars and how you can deal with them
>> Stretch marks will get lighter over time, but they won’t disappear completely
Atrophic ScArS
dear Barbara, I met with an accident a year ago and suffered from some grotesque injuries on my hand and elbow. Although the injuries have healed, a smooth and taut covering has formed over them. Initially, I thought that this was happening because of the healing process. But, I then realised that they haven’t disappeared and moving my hand has become difficult. What is the problem and how can I treat this? — Jinal Meghnani, Vashi dear Jinal That taut covering on your injuries could be keloids. Keloids occur due to an aggressive healing process, which makes your body secrete excessive collagen around the areas that need to heal. You can get treatments such as steroid injections or silicon gel sheets, which will be prescribed by your doctor. dear Barbara, I was diagnosed with chicken pox last month, but I recovered from it quickly. It has been a while since I recovered, but I’ve noticed small pits on my skin. Why has this happened and will they disappear after a while? If not, what can I do? — Bhanu Joshi, nerul dear Bhanu, Judging by what you’ve told us, the pitted scars are result of chicken pox. But, you don’t have to worry, because they aren’t harmful and can be treated quite easily. There are several home remedies for your problem that will help to diminish the scars over time. If they take too long to heal, visit a dermatologist for a faster and more efficient treatment.
Atrophic scars can be recognised by their flat, depressed, pitted or serrated appearance on the upper layer of your skin. They are usually the result of severe acne, but can also show up if you’ve recently recovered from a bout of chicken pox. You can treat atrophic scars with dermal fillers, a procedure that involves injecting collagen or hyaluronic acid into the scars, which causes the base to elevate, evening out the surface of your skin. However, this treatment is not permanent and will have to be repeated every few months.
Acne ScArS Acne scars are probably the most common scars that you will suffer from. In most cases, acne and pimples leave behind long-lasting scars that will eventually fade away. These unappealing scars appear in clusters, instead of as just a spot or two. Laser treatments will help treat severe acne marks. You can also try home remedies such as applying tomato or lemon juice on the scar. These remedies are slow, but will eventually help your scars to fade.
Stretch MArkS If you’ve suddenly lost weight, are a teenager, have an obesity problem or are pregnant, you are likely to suffer from a few stretch marks. They appear on areas such as your outer and inner thighs, chest, buttocks and even at the back of your knees. Pregnant women get more prominent marks on their belly. Stretch
marks are a result of your skin tearing and can be red, purple or white. In most cases, they get lighter over time, but won’t disappear entirely unless you get them surgically treated. Over-the-counter creams can effectively treat new scars.
keloid ScArS Keloid scars are the result of an aggressive healing phase and have a thick, clustered appearance that is darker than the surrounding skin. They are mostly caused by injuries, especially when your body secretes excess collagen to the affected area, even after the wound has healed completely. Keloids are fairly easy to treat with surgery. But, if you do not want to go through something as drastic as surgery, you can apply silicon gel-impregnated sheets or steroidal injections on your scars, both of which will help treat them.
contrActure ScArS Contracture scars are the result of a burn. As contracture scars heal over time they tighten the affected skin area, and can make movement and flexibility difficult. Your skin may take on a smooth, burned appearance and disrupt the way that your nerves and muscles function. These scars can be treated with surgical grafts, cosmetic surgery and excision.

Gujjar agitation: Highway cleared; rail track remains blocked
B
HARATPUR: On the fifth day of the Gujjar agitation, police on Monday cleared the JaipurAgra national highway of the protestors even as the rail track continued to be blocked amid a stand-off with the government over the community's demand for five per cent reservation. The stir suffered a setback in Dausa district where locals challenged the agitators and helped police in clearing the NH-11, which was blocked yesterday, police said. However, the Delhi-Mumbai rail route and a state highway in Sawaimadhopur district continued to be blocked by hundreds of Gujjars who are squatting to press the demand for five per cent reservation for government jobs. The Gujjars had yesterday threatened to intensify the agitation, which has mainly remained confined to Bharatpur and Dausa, and spread it across the state. Meanwhile, there was a deadlock over the venue of next round of talks between Gujjars and the government after one round held in Bayana ended in a failure.
VHP rakes up Ram temple as Modi completes a year in office N
EW DELHI: On a day the Modi government completed its first year in office, VHP on Monday piled pressure on it to construct Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya by "clearing hurdles" in the path of its construction. A delegation of saints would be formed to take up the matter with the government so the impediments are removed, a resolution passed on the first day of the two-day meeting of VHP's 'Kendriya Margdarshak Mandal' at Haridwar said. A VHP spokesperson said its international working president Pravin Togadia and president Raghava Reddy are present in the meeting which has given a push to the Hindutva agenda by reiterating its exclusive claim over two other holy sites in
Mathura and Varanasi, reports PTI. "The Kendriya Margdarshak Mandal has resolved that a delegation of saints would establish contact with the Union government and hold talks with it to clear hurdles in the way of Ram temple construction," a VHP statement said. BJP, whose political fortunes had soared on the back of the Ram temple movement in the late 1980s and early 90s, has chosen to put the vexed issue on the back burner when in power, favouring a solution through a court verdict or talks between the rival parties locked in the legal tussle. Rejecting any formula involving construction of a temple as well as a mosque at the dispute site, VHP said no place of worship for Mus-

It said it was a "matter of pain"
that grand temples of Ram, Krishna and Shiva had not been built at Ayodhya, Mathura and Varanasi respectively even 68 years after independence. Department has initiated lot of action is with regard to bogus IPOs and accommodation entry cases. "We have been able to identify a large number of cases. All these cases need to be taken to a logical conclusion," he said. With regard to the HSBC list, Das said, "All the assessment which require to be completed before March 31, they have been completed. Thanks to international cooperation and thanks to the initiative taken by the government in the recent months we were able to get a lot of other additional information from other countries and foreign jurisdiction." This has opened up new areas of investigation, he said, adding, "all these cases, all these areas I would emphasise that investigation need to be completed expeditiously and finally." hese days the listening sessions have become an in thing. Different institutions and music organizations have been holding listening sessions of different sorts and they are drawing a large audience. Sometimes they even tend to pull an audience which is larger that even for live concerts. Looking at this trend, one begins to wonder whether the listening sessions of the music made and recorded by past masters is more popular than live music making by the present generation of musicians. Last week, NCPA held a listening session of the audio as well as video recordings of the late Bade Ghulam Ali Khansaheb. The house was full even before the actual session began. The first part of the programme was audio recordings donated by the collector the
late Babubhai Raja. It was a bandishki thumri in the raga 'Des' by the maestro. One has never heard this piece before and it was a real bonus for the connoisseurs. His broad voice which was expressive to the ut-
most extent could get to the emotion of the song. His 'khatkas' (tonal jerks) and 'gamaks were totally reminiscent of the Gwalior gharana bigwig Krishnarao Shankar Pandit.
There were usual popular thumri numbers like 'Yaad Piyaki Aaye' and 'Saiyan Bolo' but they seemed to be his prerecorded discs. The real gem was a Doordarshan documentary which showed his live performances in clippings. It had raga like 'Marwa', 'Malkauns','Gujari Todi' and 'Megh'. The visual was a bit static which did not matter because very few people of the present generation have actually heard him live. His taans, the overall emotional appeal and his imposing screen presence made the experience not only worthwhile but cherish able too. 'Sargam' listening session of the songs composed by the late Vasant Desai at the Vile Parle Mahila Sangh too was a good show. It was presented by the film music buff Uday Bhagwat and it contained Desai's raga based as well as other songs.
Bhavana and Kirtana in a Bharata Natyam duet
By Vijay Shanker
I
n order to celebrate four decades of service to the promotion and propagation of fine arts, leading suburban cultural organisation, Music Triangle, presented a duet Bharata Natyam performance by talented dancers Bhavana Chandramouli and Kirtana Ananth at Keshavrao Ghaisas auditorium in Vile Parle. Besides the thematic content, Hari-Haram, it was the harmony between music and dance and the quality of the performance that impressed the audience. Bhavana Chandramouli and Kirtana Ananth are disciples of Guru Nilesh Singha and
Mubina of Shivoham Institute of Performing Arts and are imbibing the necessary qualities in order to become fine exponents, which was quite evident in the performances that related to both Shiva and Vishnu in Hari-haram. Besides the invocatory numbers, the performance followed with numbers like Shambho Shankara, a Marathi abhang sung by Mubina and Bho Shambho that relates to the glory and grandeur of Lord Shiva. Bhavana has a charming personality but needs to be more vibrant and lively while describing the powerful aspect of the Lord. On the contrary Kirtana seems to more confident and was quite vivacious in her body language and interpretations. Ramachandra Krupalo interpreted the benevolent description of Lord Rama according to the vision of saint poet Tulsidas. While the Kannada composition Kundado dealt with Lord Krishna, the duo concluded the performance with a complex Thillana of two raags, namely Dhanasri and Hindolam and proved to be the piece-deresistance of the evening with fine choreography by Guru Nilesh Singha and Mubina. Both Bhavana and Kirtana make a fine team.

Two veterans fight it out in ‘Dhurandhar Bhatavdekar’ By Sandeep Hattangadi

irector Kshitij Zarapkar who gave us ‘Golaberij’, based on P L Deshpande’s stories, is now ready with his next film ‘Dhurandhar Bhatawdekar’ which is also a comedy flick. Kshitij has himself written the script of this film, which stars two veteran actors, namely Mohan Joshi and Dr Mohan Agashe playing two most important characters of Avinash Durandhar and Vishwambhar Bhatavdekar respectively. The film revolves around these two oldies, who have come to stay at a five star home for senior citizens efficiently managed by Pushpa Damle,(Kishori Shahane), who lives there with her 22 year old daughter Ranee (Tanvi Hegde). Though this posh place houses enthusiastic senior citizens who are very young at heart, it also has a gym trainer, who runs the health club, a resident doctor, a cafeteria and a well equipped library. Mohan Joshi talking about the film says, “I play a retired thespian actor
and Mohan Agashe plays a retired hotelier and when we meet at the facility, slowly a relationship develops between the two of us and two people with diverse personalities come together which creates funny situations and I got to work with an actor of Mohan Agashe’s caliber and I got to learn a great deal from him.” Agashe says, “My character is finicky and fastidious and is always at loggerheads with other people at the facility and this leads to comic situations. I am quite lucky to work with Mohan Joshi who is an accomplished artiste and the children’s song which he has sung in the film is absolutely fantastic in the voice of Rrishikesh Kamerkar”. Kishori Shahane in her 75th film is the bone of contention between these two veteran artistes. Shantanu Gangane, former child actress actress, Tanvi Hegde, Jayant Savarkar, Vrushali Hatalkar and Dushyant Wagh are also a part of the cast in the film produced by Devdatt Kapadia with lyrics by Ashwini Shende.

OLKATA: Written off after four losses on the trot to start with in the IPL, Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma said their revival and the subsequent title triumph was triggered by the belief that every game was his team's final. After suffering five losses from their first six matches, Sharma and co. Showed tremendous resilience winning seven of their last eight matches to finish second in the league and in the first qualifier they beat Chennai Super Kings. Pitted against familiar foes CSK in the summit clash -- against whom they have played all their three finals -- MI capped the turnaround brilliantly thrashing Mahendra Singh Dhoni's yellow brigade by 41 runs to win their second title at the Eden Gardens last night. "To be honest, there was no game-changing instance for us. We did not have any instance like that. We knew the moment we would lose, we would be out of the tournament and we treated every game as a final, as it was our last game," Sharma told the post match news conference. Crediting their coach and twotime World Cup winning Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting for guiding him through, Sharma said he's relMembers of the Mumbai Indians squad take a lap of honour during their felicitation after they won the IPL 8 season defeating Chennai ishing his captaincy. was important to keep the team stay together and let it not drift away. We knew we would have it our way when we do our basics right. We have got guys who can individually turn the game. It was a matter of putting it together and we did that perfectly." "I have very good teammates, a good bunch of guys who are willing to take up the challenge and perform. At any given point when we're in trouble the guys took up the challenge and put it across the opposition. This is all it required to win a tournament. You try and win those little moments and we did well," Sharma said. "Credit to each one of us and not just the 11 players. It's the whole squad who deserves a lot of credit. The support staff also put a lot of efforts behind the scene and some of them get unnoticed," he said hailing their nine-man support that included team icon Sachin Tendulkar. The MI skipper said he loved to bat first and take the attack to opposition in big matches and skipper Dhoni's call for bowling first after winning the toss was a welcome sign. "It was a good toss to lose. When MS said he would like to bowl first, I was little happy inside. It's a big game, you want to put runs on the board and put pressure on opposition. That exactly what happened. In big games, you would like to do that that's my preference."

He has come and helped me a lot in terms of captaincy. He has been such a great captain for Australia. He brings that experience to the table. Even when we won the title in 2013, he was not playing, he guided us through and was very much part of our team. He was there to help. "Basically I try to keep it simple. I stick to my strengths and listen to myself a lot on the field and go by my instincts on the field. The planning, strategy we did for two months really seemed to be working well." He also showered praise on the team's support staff for standing up to the challenge and deliver when it mattered most. "There were times when we're not winning games. As a captain it

OLKATA: Amidst heavy speculation that Sourav Ganguly is being considered for a coaching role with the Indian cricket team, BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur today said the Board is yet to take a decision on the matter. It has been speculated that Ganguly could either become chairman of advisory panel, High Performance Manager, Team Director or the chief coach of the national cricket team.
"Sourav's contribution to Indian cricket has been great. He's been a great cricketer. It will be worth waiting and whatever will be decided will be in the interest of the Indian cricket. There's a lot of speculation in the media regarding Sourav and the role of the coach. Give us some time to decide on that," Thakur told reporters after the IPL Governing Council meeting here. Thakur, who is expected to meet president Jagmohan Dalmiya at his
residence later in the afternoon said that an announcement on support staff is on the cards. "We've already picked the team for Bangladesh and as far as the coach and support staff is concerned we would announce soon," he said. "Today I'm here and will meet the president so we will make the announcement soon. We will take certain decisions as far as the series in Bangladesh is concerned after meeting Dalmiya in the afternoon.," Thakur said.
Pakistan fans face tickets shortage after theft in PCB office K
ARACHI: Pakistani cricket fans are finding it difficult to get hold of tickets for the three match One-day International series against Zimbabwe which begins from Tuesday at the Gaddafi stadium in Lahore. After the two sell out T20 matches at the weekend, fans have been complaining about shortage of tickets for the one-day matches although the Pakistan Cricket
Board had announced that the tickets are available at outlets of a well-known bakery franchise. “We are trying to find out whether there is a shortage of tickets and why,” a board official said. Just last week the PCB had filed a FIR against an office employee after around 600 tickets of 1500 rupees each denomination were stolen from the board offices. Pakistani fans have responded enthu-
siastically to the first international series in Pakistan in six-years time. Television channels have shown cricket fans complaining about not getting tickets at the prescribed outlets. The three ODIs that are due to be held at the Gaddafi stadium this week are significant for Pakistan since they have to win all three matches to retain their ranking points in the ICC table.

UMBAI: Cricket is not only a a passion for boys but also for girls. During the ongoing local Twister-Mitsu Shoji T-20 league match - Vrinda Rathi, a young collegian cricketer was at the helm of updating the scoresheets and is only bridging the gap in a male dominated arena. It was this mere passion, which brought this lass on the cricket field and Rathi has connected herself with the game in some form or the other. Starting off early as a cricket enthusiast, she developed the knack when she started playing in school which led her to believe she can go places with this game. “Cricket for me all started when I use to play gully cricket with my building friends. Being from Navi Mumbai, our SIES School at Nerul had a girls cricket team. I played for my school for two years in the inter-school cricket tournament. But then due to lack of coaching for girls, I couldn't continue further.” She got another opportunity when she joined the Ruparel College, Matunga and took up the sport seriously. “In 2008, when I joined Ruparel College, I got to know about the cricket team. There I met Surekha Bhandare, who was coaching our girls at Indian Gymkhana. After playing in inter-collegiate girls tournaments, I got to represent Mumbai University for four years.”

Vrinda Rathi Along with learning the basic tenets of the game, she was also taught the scoring system by her coach. “It was during the course of matches our coach used to tell us to know the basic laws of cricket as well and insisted that we should know how to do scoring. So in a practice games we all use to do scoring. In 2008, I appeared for the local scoring exam conducted by Mumbai Cricket Association and cleared it. After that I did lot of scoring in local tournaments like Kanga League, Times Shield, Harris and Giles Shield,” the 26 year-old Rathi. Despite the long hours, dust and heat during the matches, Rathi said that the interest in the game kept her going. “As time went by, I re-
ally started liking this job. It is really different and needs lots of patience and concentration as I have to sit for six hours and record the whole match ball by ball. It was not easy to sit in a tent without a fan. But still I use to enjoy, because every match had something interesting in it, let it be of any level or age group.” After scoring for a while in local matches, she cleared the Board of Control for Cricket in India's [BCCI] exams which was specially conducted for women and three years later was covering the Women's World Cup which was held in the city. “In 2010, I got a opportunity to appear for the BCCI exam which was specially organized for girls. I was one of the eight girls who cleared it.
After clearing the BCCI exam, I had an opportunity to do scoring for ICC Women's World Cup in 2013.” Rathi had to wait for a while till she got a call to do the official scoring for the Indian Premier Legaue. She got an opportunity to officiate in first ever IPL match this season. “Though I could not achieve much as a player, cricket for me is more of a passion rather than a job for me. Meanwhile, my interest in cricket widened as I also took interest in umpiring and hope someday l will do umpiring at higher level too,’’ added Rathi who has cleared her Mumbai Cricket Association umpiring exams and has officiated over 25 matches so far.

Tomas Berdych wins as his grand slam chase continues
P
ARIS: Tomas Berdych has been knocking on the door of the highest elite for so long that his knuckles must be red raw. Now 29, he has been a permanent fixture in the top five since July 2010. On Monday he began another attempt at claiming the debut Grand Slam title he has chased for so long with a first round win against the qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka 6-0, 75, 6-3. Berdych has lost in the first round at Roland-Garros five times in his previous 11 appearances, and twice on these courts has been defeated by a player ranked outside the top 100. But on Court Suzanne-Lenglen the gulf in class between the Czech and 19-year-old Nishioka, ranked 146, was just too great. The left-handed Japanese was bidding to record his first Tourlevel match win on clay, and did well to push his opponent in the
second set. But not for nothing has Berdych attained his highest-ever Grand Slam seeding here, at No.4, and the danger soon passed. Until Stan Wawrinka won the Australian Open last year, it looked for all the world that Berdych would be the player who would finally break the dominance of the 'Big Four' (Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal). But to this day, the 2010 Wimbledon final remains the closest he has come to triumph in the sport's four major tournaments.Berdych's results so far this season illustrate that he can still pose a danger. In seven of his nine tournaments to date, the Czech has reached the semi-finals or better. It showed impressive consistency although, rather in keeping with his regular struggle to get over the line, he did not win any of them.
ONACO: Lewis Hamilton was conspicuous by his absence on Monday as bleary-eyed reports of the post-race parties after Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix were shared over strong coffee on the Cote d'Azur where, so unexpectedly, his Mercedes team-mate and rival Nico Rosberg had been given a giftwrapped victory. The two-time world champion and current series leader is said to enjoy a "party lifestyle" between races, but he made a quick exit to his local apartment home after his team's spectacular tactical blunder had cost him a comfortable victory. After performing his essential media duties with dignity, he ducked out of the annual hubbub to rest and recover. Nobody argued. Even Rosberg, who was one of the star attractions at the Amber Lounge event at the Beach Plaza hotel after completing a rare hattrick of successive wins on his home town street circuit, was sympathetic to his title rival's plight. He said he was as surprised as anyone that the team had called the race leader in for new tyres, during a Safety Car intervention, with 15 laps remaining. "Stopping wasn't on my mind at all," said Rosberg. "There were just a few laps to go so I just did not consider it. Instead, it was - for me - a big, big surprise... And I just thought 'where the hell did he go?' "Then, all of a sudden, I saw wheel-banging behind me between a Mercedes and a Ferrari, and I thought 'what the hell is going on there?'" What Rosberg saw was the brief battle between Hamilton and fourtime champion German Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari after the Briton had returned to the fray following his pit-stop. The 29-year-old German, a Mon-
egasque resident, did not delay, but pulled clear to win by 4.4 seconds, his 10th victory in Formula One. "I know Lewis deserved to win," he admitted. "He did a great job and I am very well aware of that. I really feel for him. It's a horrible way to lose a race. "I have a lot of space for empathy towards him because I know how horrible a day it is for him after such a strong weekend and to lose it right at the end like that... That sucks. "On the other side a win is a win and, in sport, luck plays a big factor in all these things. So, I've learned to take it. I'm aware I got lucky. Very lucky... Probably the luckiest I've ever been in my career, but I'll take it and enjoy it." As one driver celebrated and the other licked his wounds, their Mercedes' bosses began to unravel the mistakes that cost
31
Hamilton his fourth win of the season. Team director Niki Lauda said he had instructed team chief Toto Wolff to launch a full analysis. "Honestly," said Lauda. "I feel so sorry, really sorry, for him. I apologised to his engineers because for me this was unacceptable. I gave Toto an order to analyse it properly and see where the mistake was made. This decision, to bring him in, was wrong." Wolff later told an impromptu media news conference that the mistake was caused by a simple mathematical error. "What the hell happened there? That is exactly the right question," he said. "The simple answer is we got the math wrong, the calculation wrong. We thought we had a gap, which we didn't have, when the Safety Car came out and Lewis was behind it....

ONDON: Argentina legend Diego Maradona has attacked world football chief Sepp Blatter, calling the 79-year-old Swiss "a dictator" and claiming his bid for a fifth term as FIFA president is "an absurdity". Maradona's scathing personal attack in The Daily Telegraph comes days before Blatter seeks an unprecedented fifth term at the helm of football's governing body. Blatter is in a two horse race to continue in the post he assumed in 1998 - the only other candidate being Prince Ali bin Al Hussein of
Jordan after Luis Figo and Michael van Praag pulled out last week. Blatter has been widely criticised during his reign and Maradona is aghast that he is the overwhelming favourite to retain his position. The 1986 World Cup winner told The Telegraph: "Under Sepp Blatter, Fifa has become a disgrace and a painful embarrassment to those of us who care about football deeply. "While I find almost no one openly supporting Blatter, many think he will win a fifth term. Why? The whole notion of a fifth term is an absurdity in 2015. "No one has argued that he is the best man for the job and deserves to win. "Recently he pledged to follow through in addressing racism in football and promoting women in the sport. That made me laugh. My question is: 'Sepp, what were you doing in your last four terms?' We have a dictator for life. I call Blatter 'the man of ice' because he lacks the inspiration and passion that are at the very heart of football. If this is the face of international football, we are in a very bad place."
