There will be no Property Tax for tenements upto 500 sq ft, assures CM

n a major relief to tenants of tenements admeasuring upto 500 sq ft, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis yesterday assured a delegation led by Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar that the government will consider giving relief in Property Tax. The new property tax regime adopted by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) from this fiscal year has hiked the
tax by 40 per cent for tenements up to 500 sq ft or less than that area. The Chief Minister stated that the government if need be, a decision will be taken at the state cabinet meet and a notification to this effect will be issued. In a statement issued here yesterday Shelar stated that about eight
lakh tenements are less than 500 sq ft area and the hike in property tax rate has resulted in widespread resentment among the common people. He argued that in order to give relief to the ordinary citizens living in small tenements it was imperative that an amendment was made to section 140(A) of the BMC Act. Fadnavis assured the delegation that the issue was of utmost concern for the common man and hence the government will take an
immediate decision on it. Shelar added that due to the faulty property tax regime adopted by the BMC in the last five years, the civic body has collected additional tax revenue of Rs. 1,200 crore. He demanded that this surplus tax revenue be returned back to the people. The Mumbai BJP president further pointed out that the High Court too has issued directives to the BMC to this effect and has also sought the opinion of the Advocate General.

Mantralaya gulps down mineral water worth ` 4.66L in 5 months CITY
Strangely, the cost of BMC water charge for similar quantity is a paltry Rs.171 By Philip Varghese
T
he ministers, secretaries and other government staff, working in Mantralaya, South Mumbai are now habituated to drinking bottled mineral water, instead of that being supplied by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This was revealed through a Right to Information (RTI) reply as in the last five months, they have run up a bill of Rs.4.66 lakh for consuming 24,648 litres of Bisleri water. The same quantity of BMC water supplied by the pipeline would have just Rs.171. RTI activist Anil Galgali had sought information from the Maharashtra government regarding the cost and quantity of consumption of Bisleri water in Mantralaya. In a reply to the query J.M. Salvi, General Manager and Public Information Officer (PIO) of the Mantralaya Canteen informed Galgali that between December 2014
and April 2015 comprising of five months a total of 83,628 Bisleri bottles of water was purchased at the cost of Rs.4,66,019. 88. “Of these, the maximum usage was of 250 ML bottles accounting for 68,976 bottles amounting to Rs.3,67,642. 08, the next was 14,496 bottles of 500 ML amounting to Rs.96,688. 32 and just 156 bottles of 1 litre amounting to Rs.1,689.48,” the RTI reply stated. Galgali had also sought copies of the Government Resolution (GR) authorising purchase of bottled water, apart from the water supply of the civic body, which has not been provided. According to Galgali, “The govt seems to be indulging in splurging public money for consuming mineral water, whereas the cost of BMC water for a similar quantity would have been just Rs.171 as the BMC charges only Rs.4.32 plus sewerage charges totalling Rs.6,912 for 1000 litres of water supplied through its pipelines. In Mantralaya there is an Aquaguard purified system installed by Government.” The activist has now approached Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis by writing a letter protesting against this wasteful expenditure. “In a situ-

ation where the state is reeling under severe drought, and the citizens are craving for even single drop of water, the people who are supposed to perform for the citizens are indulging in wasteful expenditure by consuming mineral water. The water supplied by the BMC is of best quality and also pure and clean, hence the CM should instruct usage of BMC water only for drinking purposes, also if any minister or a babu wants to consume bottled mineral water, then they should buy that water and pay from their own pockets,” the letter stated. An official from Mantralaya, who did not wish to be named said, “This issue of bottled water started after the massive fire that broke out at the Mantralaya and most of the departments were moved out to other buildings or other localities. The employees or staff of Mantralaya were under the impression that they could spend money on the bottled water from canteens and so such huge amounts of bottled water were ordered, spending lakhs of rupees.” philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

Two days after his conviction, on May 8, the Bombay HC had admitted Khan's appeal against the conviction, suspended the sentence, Vikas Sabnis and granted him bail. The HC, after hearing Khan's counsel Amit Desai and the public prosecutor S Shinde, had said that the charge of culpable homicide under section 304-II of Indian Penal Code needs consideration. But the HC had said that the actor would require to seek prior permission each time he wishes to travel abroad. Therefore Khan moved the HC's vacation bench for permission to go to Dubai for an event scheduled to take place this Friday. Marilyn Monroe’s final photoshoot to be auctioned
they look for collective experience. Man is a gregarious animal. He wants to interact all the time. May be there are people who are content to talk themselves, who do not want to reach out. There are men who go mad if they are alone — may be needing some psychiatrict treatment. They become restless, they cannot be left alone in a room all by themselves. It is only sadhus, yogis, babas who perhaps want to be alone. They go to the Himalayas so they can be alone. These days, however, they cannot go there because earthquakes are taking place. Nobody likes to miss a chance to celebrate — to be with other men or women. You have got to be a nut if you want to live all by yourself.
Traffic noise may give you a pot belly Marilyn Monroe
RARE photos of screen icon Marilyn Monroe, taken just weeks before her untimely death, are going to auction in London. The stunning snapshots were taken by her friend, photographer George Barris, on Santa Monica beach on July 13, 1962, just three weeks before she was found dead at 36 in her Los Angeles bedroom. The set also includes photos of Monroe in her Brentwood, California, home, reported Daily Mirror. Eight of the prints, several of which show Monroe romping on the beach in a towel or bikini, are expected to sell for 8,000 pound at Dreweatts & Bloomsbury Auctions in London on June 4.
Barris, who met Monroe in 1954 on the set of her hit film The Seven Year Itch, originally intended to use the pictures for a book he was working on about the iconic actress, but he scrapped it after her death.
Enjoy being alone?
DO you enjoy being all by yourself? A study conducted in America says most people love being alone! In our country, most people do not want to be alone: They want ‘company’. Across the country, there are families who stay together. They eat together, play together, see TV together. They love talking — and and also fighting — with one another. All the time,
PEOPLE regularly exposed to a combination of road, rail and plane noise are at a high risk of developing a pot belly. Road traffic noise is linked to a heightened risk of developing a mid-riff bulge. Exposure to a combination of road traffic, rail, and aircraft noise may pose the greatest risk of acquiring a spare tyre - otherwise known as central obesity, and thought to be one of the most harmful types of fat deposition around the body. Researchers assessed how much road traffic, rail, and aircraft noise 5,075 people living in cities, had been exposed since 1999. The results indicated no link between road traffic noise and BMI. But there was an association between road traffic noise and waist size, with a 0.21 cm increase for every additional 5 decibel (dB) increase in exposure.

mouthpiece Saamana gave a cold shoulder to the coverage yesterday. Barring a small report on Modi's speech at Mathura, even the editorial focused on road accidents. All these despite the fact that Sena MP Anant Geete is in the Modi Cabinet as the Minister for Heavy Industries. The war of words between the two allies in power was only rekindled after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the party's state executive meet had remarked that the
tranged ally over possible alliance for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. Danve, however, kicked off a storm over his remark on NDA governments scheme of accident insurance policy in Rs.12. Enlisting the various achievements of Modi government in the past one year, he remarked that the government has given accident insurance cover in Rs.12 where even the shroud for the dead is not available in that price.
While the state BJP leaders celebrated Modi governments one year in office at its state party office, the party cadres were seen complaining bitterly about they being overlooked. According to a party worker from SouthCentral Mumbai the party worker who put in all his might in ensuring back-toback successes in Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, is still craving for appointments to some state-run corporation, Mohalla committee.
hile the ruling BJP has started its celebrations for the first anniversary of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government by exhibiting its report card, the state Congress has adopted an aggressive stance by registering its protest against the Central government. As declared earlier by the party, the Congress workers held massive demonstrations across the state to protest against NDA government, which completed one year in office yesterday. The Congress workers gathered at Girgaum chowpati and stage a protest march up to Azad Maidan. The party workers raised slogans against the Central government. The Congress has described the one year of the Modi government as a death anniversary of 'acche din'. The party has categorically stated that the Central government has miserably failed to fulfill its prepoll promises like checking price rise, bringing back black money stashed abroad, taking tough stand against Pakistan, employment generation, transparency in governance among other things. After the protest, speaking to reporters, the leader of the opposition in the state Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil said, “Where are the 'acche din' for farmers of the state, especially Vidarbha? There were good days for farmers during UPA regime. Now farmers are committing suicide every day. In the state the number of farmer suicides has increased by 40 per cent. This is really shameful”. “Instead of spending crores of rupees to publicise completion of one year, the gov-

Woman killed in road accident Lady doctor booked by D.B. Marg police By Tariq Khan
A
25-year-old woman was killed after the twowheeler she was riding on was hit by a car driven by a lady doctor near Girgaum Chowpatty on Monday evening. The lady doctor has been booked by the D.B. Marg police and has been asked to present herself in court at a later date. The deceased Komal Singh was riding with her paternal cousin, Aakash (23) on a bike. Dr Lajja Shah, who lives near Malabar Hill and practices at the Harkishandas Hospital, was driving her Toyota Innova towards her residence with her driver, identified only as Mandal, seated besides her. Her car the duo’s bike collided after which Komal began to bleed severely from her mouth and nose. “The accused got down from her vehicle, introduced
herself as a doctor, and first rushed Komal to the nearby dispensary. She was then transferred to the Bhatia Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Komal had also sustained severe internal bleeding in the chest,” said senior PI Suresh Hujband of the D.B. Marg police. The driver was taken to the police station where his statement was recorded in which he maintained it was his employer who was driving the vehicle. “The woman normally takes over the wheel and the driver sits besides her when she is returning home from the hospital,” SPI Hujband said and added that she has been booked for causing death due to rash and negligent driving under the IPC and the Motor Vehicles Act. The offence is bailable and cops said they did not find the need to arrest her.

Modular rumbles pose risky ride for MiraBhayandar motorists By Suresh Golani

hat was installed by the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) to curb speeding and cut down on accidents, the huge number of 'rumble strips' (modular speed-breakers) dotting the main and arterial roads across the twin-city, have translated into more of a hurdle than help for motorists. Swarming with the reinforced plastic versions of the traditional cement made speed-breakers, the strips spell trouble for motorists especially bikers who are punctuated by breaks, jolts and spine rattling jerks while driving on roads. BEST, traffic police launch campaign to ‘Give Way to Ambulance’
By Kinjal Shah
B
EST and Mumbai Traffic Police in association with RADHEE Disaster and Education Foundation have launched an initiative 'Give Way to Ambulance' on May 26 to create awareness among BEST drivers, conductors, staff and public about the importance of giving priority to an ambulance on the road. A pledge signature campaign is in process to enroll
BEST drivers, conductors and staff to not only give way to ambulance but also ensure ambulance speed up. Addressing media, Founder Director RADHEE Foundation Rita Savla said, “Messages behind BEST buses, electricity bills and banners at bus depot will enroll many people to support in sustainable changes for Give way to Ambulance project.” “Mumbai Traffic Police will ensure that ambulances don't have to stop at signals
but people should be aware that ambulance also needs to speed up between traffic signals. People's support plays a vital role in this project,” said Jt CP Traffic Milind Bharande. The officials who were present at the event include BEST chairman Arvind Dudhwadkar, General Manager Jagadish Patil, Director RADHEE Asif Reshamwala, Senior VP Shriram Transport Finance Co. Ltd Putambekar among others.
and design guidelines laid down by the Indian Roads Congress (IRC)- the sole authority on road safety in India, motorists using them reveal a nightmarish experience. Not striking out the need of speed breakers, a biker Niraj Kothari said, “Ideally meant to reduce the speed to a certain limit, these humped rumble strips not only bring vehicles to almost a complete halt but tend to shake and jerk them violently.” Moreover there is a glaring inconsistency in the number of strips, while some roads have one or two, several residential pockets including Bakery Lane in Bhayandar have a whooping seven strips within a distance of 200 meters with some comprising a line of three rumble strips.

When contacted, executive PWD engineer Deepak Khambit said, “We have received complaints in this context. Presently further installations have been stopped and a review was on to do the needful as soon as possible.” “It’s like stairs installed bang on the middle of a road which causes damage to my auto and I cannot bear the extra maintenance cost,” laments a rickshaw driver who like many of his colleagues has now started avoiding routes on which these strips have been installed. “Yes, a recommendation had indeed been made, albeit as per IRC guidelines. We will carry out a survey and ask the MBMC to rectify the flaws,” said Police Inspector (Traffic) Chandrakant Gundge.

UPA PM too was culpable for 2G scam F
ormer TRAI chief Pradip Baijal has disclosed in a book that UPA’s prime minister, Manmohan Singh, was culpable for the 2G scam. The former prime minister could have stopped it, but he chose not to do so. Two minister, Dayanidhi Maran and A. Raja had asked him to cooperate with them in a money-making initiative. PM Manmohan Singh had also asked Baijal to carry out the order of two ministers — A. Raja and Dayanidhi Maran. Baijal had refused to do so. If what Baijal has revealed is true, former prime minister Manmohan Singh is guilty just as Maran and Raja were. While the two ministers were arrested and put on trial, Manmohan Singh has been left off. The evidence produced by Baijal is enough to put Manmohan Singh on trial as well. By turning a blind eye to what was going on, he also should have attracted criminal charges. Why did Manmohan Singh kept silent when Maran and Raja were blissfully carrying on the scam? He was not been one bit benefited by it. The truth is he was forced to keep silent. The DMK with 19 members was an ally who helped the Congress to muster majority in Parliament. DMK chief Karunanidhi is said to have threatened to withdraw support if he stopped the scam. The UPA government would have collapsed and to prevent this happening, Manmohan Singh remained silent. In doing so, however, he has also become culpable for the 2G scam.

I
N the four interactions he’s had with Delhi journalists as part of his first anniversary outreach to the media, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been at pains to emphasize that he cares two hoots for the impression being created that he’s losing the perception war. The impression has gained ground after Rahul Gandhi’s 'suit-boot' jibe to which government ministers are still trying to find a suitable riposte. Modi claims, however, that he is least bothered. 'Main iski parvah nahin karta', he is believed to have said at one of these media meets. His couldn’t-care-less attitude flies in the face of the overdrive that his government has gone into to roll out its 'achievements’ in the past one year. Rallies across the country, press conferences in state capitals, a signed letter from Modi himself on the front pages of all newspapers, media interviews by Union ministers, advertisements, booklets and pamphlets…. the government has used every platform possible to blow its own trumpet. The fanfare was kicked off by none less than the PM who travelled through heat wave conditions to address a rally in Mathura. Significantly, Modi’s Mathura speech was laden with pro-poor and pro-farmer overtones, as if to erase the 'suit-boot' taint. His nonchalance in front of journalists is therefore bemusing. At one of the recent interactions, he spoke at length on the perception war and kept harking back to his Gujarat experience to buttress its irrelevance. He recalled that he was under constant attack from the media during his 10-year stint as Gujarat chief minister. He took no notice and went about doing his work and stayed connected with the people, he said. The strategy paid off, he insisted, because he won three terms as CM. The chip he carries on his shoulder was very much in evidence when he trotted out his victim theory. He said, he was well aware that a certain groups were using a section of the media to target him. It didn’t bother him, he maintained. Interestingly, the RSS seems to be quite concerned about the perception war. It has concluded that the Modi government is in danger of losing it. The first anniversary publicity blitzkrieg is probably in part an attempt to counter the criticism from within.
PM's obsession with selfies
M
ODI’S obsession with selfies caused quite a flutter during one of his recent
media interactions. After spending nearly two hours chatting with journalists on the BJP beat, Modi got up to leave. It was well past 10:30 p.m. and host Arun Jaitley was getting restless. Modi was on his way out and had almost got into his car when some journalists remembered that they hadn’t taken any photographs. No selfie with Modi, the king of selfies? Oh no! The journalists were heartbroken. Someone, perhaps it was Jaitley’s deputy, Raghavendra Rathore, plucked up the courage to go after the PM. And lo and behold! Modi happily came back in and posed
POWER TALK Arati R. Jerath for as many selfies as the correspondents wanted! He didn’t seem to be bothered by the fact that it was nearly 11 p.m. when the photo session ended.
Dhowan may be the lucky one because of his seniority and formidable networking skills. If he is indeed appointed chief of defence staff, he is likely to get two, maybe even three, more years in service. Now, how lucky is that!
Nobody wants Modi-fied Land Bill
P
OLITICAL circles are waiting with bated breath to see whether the Modi government re-issues the contentious land ordinance. It has lapsed because it was not passed by Parliament. The bill is now with a joint parliamentary committee which is supposed to submit its report at the start of the monsoon session of Parliament. So far the government has desisted from reissuing it. There appear to be two reasons for the hesitation. One is the Opposition from within. Many BJP MPs from rural areas as well as various RSS affiliated organizations do not want the Modi-fied land bill. But the second reason is Rashtrapati Bhavan. The government is not sure whether the President will sign the ordinance again. After it was re-issued a second time during the mid-session break of Parliament in March, the matter was challenged in the Supreme Court. The SC has issued notices to the government. It seems the President may have cautioned the government on the issue because of the controversy.
Seems like Nitish has met his match in Manjhi!
Oh, to be lucky like Robin Dhowan
F
EW defence officers have been as fortunate as the current navy chief, Robin Dhowan. He would have retired without the honour, but for the abrupt resignation of the then navy chief D.K. Joshi who quit after a series of naval accidents during his term. Joshi’s unexpected departure halfway into his term put Dhowan on the escalator to the top and he became navy chief. Now, if the buzz in defence circles is to be believed, he is on course to becoming the chief of defence staff. The post has been under contemplation for many years, but no government has had the will to create the post because of fears that it would upset the balance of power in the defence forces. It is believed that the Modi government has decided to take the bull by its horns and appoint one of the service chiefs as head of the defence forces.
B
IHAR Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has met his match in his hand-picked predecessor-turned foe Jitan Ram Manjhi. The former CM has refused to vacate the official bungalow at 1 Aney Marg in Patna. Interestingly, when Nitish first became CM, he managed to oust Lalu and wife Rabri from the iconic bungalow within one month. When he himself resigned and appointed Manjhi as CM after the 2014 Lok Sabha defeat, Nitish quit the bungalow within a week. But Manjhi has refused to vacate the residence despite being requested. With elections coming up in a few months, Nitish is wary of using strong-arm tactics against a Maha Dalit. He has now compromised by settling for another bungalow at 7 Circular Road while Manjhi stays on in the official CM residence.
Selfless love: The story of Hatim T
HE life of Hatim is written by the Persians and many stories are told about him. One of these stories is best known by the people in the East. It tells that a princess who was much renowned for her beauty and greatness had made as a condition for those who loved her and desired her hand that only the one who brought her a certain pearl which she longed to possess would marry her. There was one lover of the princess who really loved her, but did not find the way to obtain that pearl from anywhere. The work of Hatim was to roam about from country to country and to do what he could for those who needed his services. He met this lover who, roaming about, was most unhappy because he could not find the pearl. Hatim consoled him and said, “Continue in your path of love, even if it be difficult, and remember that I shall not rest until I have
brought relief to your heart by bringing you the pearl you are longing for.” Hatim then went in pursuit of the pearl and the story tells what difficulties he had to overcome in obtaining it. When at last he got it he brought it to the palace, and the princess was won by that pearl.

THE BJP will celebrate Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s one year in office with a week-long campaign called 'Jan Kalyan Parv' or 'People’s Welfare Festival' aimed at countering a flood of charges that its policies are ‘pro-corporate’ and ‘anti-poor.’ The party will hold 200 rallies across the country with Modi, starting from Mathura - the birthplace of Lord Krishna. As part of the festival, all Union Ministers, BJP MPs, party Chief Ministers and MLAs, besides Central and State office-bearers will travel across the country to highlight the government’s achievements. Work will be assigned by order of seniority. Each Minister has been asked to be at a city to spearhead the campaign so as to promote success of the NDA Government. Party MPs have been asked to spend a week in their respective constituencies describing their achievements. Each government department is also preparing a booklet and an e-booklet for the cadres. Besides rallies, about 200 press conferences have also been planned to talk about the initiatives of the government. It will be a gala time for BJP.

Loss of valiant officers
CM saffronising city cops? THE abrupt, unwanted, unwarranted and uncalled for transfer of the IPS officers by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Phadnavis is a prima facie evidence that this CM is politicising the Mumbai Police Force which should be condemned in the strictest terms by law abiding citizens. The Additional Commissioner of Police (north-zone) Kishore Jadhav has been abruptly transferred even though he had not completed a year in the office and he is an incumbent IPS who kept the criminals at bay. The DCP of Zone-12 Punjabrao Ugale was abruptly transferred by the CM, Ugale is a no-nonsense, fire-brand IPS par excellence. During the former BJP-SS ruling in the Maharashtra there was not a trace of glowing lacunae and anomaly in the working of the CM’s office which is prevailing at present. There are two thoughts which come to the mind of the common man a). either Fadnavis is politicising the police force to make them BJP friendly b). these transfers may be an attempt to saffronise the

year rule, transparent coal and spectrum auction, liberalisation of defence and insurance sector, labour reforms, financial inclusion through Jan Dhan Yojana (JDY) and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan are other commendable achievements of Modi Government. Yet for the common man, what matters is two-meals a day. Reduction of auto/taxi fares AT long last, Diwakar Raote, Minister for Public Transport, has heard the cries of the public on the frequent Taxi and Auto Fare hikes in the past couple of years since the flawed single-member Hakim Committee Report was erroneously followed by the Government. Except in past one month when fuel prices have gone up due to fall in the value of the rupee, fuel prices have fallen drastically during the past several months due to robust rupee value vis-a-vis the dollar and fall in international prices of oil. Despite this, commuters were forced to pay more for auto and taxi trips. Rather than demanding frequent increases in auto and taxi fares, their associations would serve the interests of their members better by demanding better roads which will not only increase mileage but also reduce wear and tear of the vehicles due to potholes.

The alleged stashing of wealth by Indians in Swiss banks has been a matter of great debate in India. The Indian government has been pushing the Swiss authorities for a long time to share information on the suspected tax evaders, while Switzerland has shared some details in cases where India has been able to provide some independent evidence of suspected tax evasion by Indian clients of Swiss banks. While there was no reply to queries mailed to the FTA spokesperson in this regard, these names are being published in the Swiss Federal Gazette in the backdrop of the Swiss government being flooded with requests on suspected black money hoarders in Swiss banks from various countries including India. As per these notices, the concerned persons can file an appeal before the Federal Administrative Court within 30 days, while providing the reasons and evidence in their support. Through these gazette notices, the Swiss FTA is also looking to give the concerned persons an opportunity to resort to legal remedies. These are the persons about whom foreign governments are requesting information.

I appeared for my HSC exams this year. I want to study something related to Biology. I have zeroed in on biotechnology but I am confused between BTech and BSc. I want to pursue my post graduation abroad. Which degree should I opt for? Also, suggest good colleges for both the courses. —Sara
Compare the course syllabus and accordingly take the decision. While a 4-year B. Tech. course would be in-depth and would have a fine balance of practical as well as theory composition in comparison to a 3-year B.Sc. course which would be more theoretical. The choice is subject to your eligibility. For the list of colleges please log on to the website of the University of Mumbai.

ne of the most anticipated movies of the year, Tanu weds Manu is perhaps the only film in the history of Hindi cinema which qualifies as a sequel by all means. The sequel starts from exactly where the prequel ended. Kangana Ranaut who surprises the industry, audience and the critics with her effortless acting has once again proved that she is the Queen of acting. She sunk her teeth effortlessly into the skin of the character and she has perfectly played the role of a Haryanavi girl without being over the top. From the accent to the attitude, she has got it all right. This is one of those movies where the actors steal the show. R Madhvan (Manu) perfectly portrayed the life and emotional ups and downs of a middle aged man. Deepak Dobriyal (Pappi) entertains the most in the movie. Jimmy Shergill (Raja Awasthi), Swara Bhaskar (Payal), Eijaz Khan (Jassi) and Mohhmad Zeeshan Ayyub (Chintu) and all the other actors simply make the movie worth watching. The movie takes the audience to four years after the marriage of Tanu and Manu where the estranged cou-

‘College life was the most amazing time of my life,’
says Actress Roop Durgapal
I
did my B.Tech (Instrumentation & Controls Engineering) in the 2006 batch from Graphic Era Hill University, Dehradun, Uttarakhand. My college was huge, with a beautiful campus surrounded by the Rajaji national park. The first day was full of excitement as I was meeting new people and knew that now I will have a lot of friends and have a lot of fun. I was ragged but it hardly affected me as I had faced quite a lot of ragging in my previous hostel and had become immune to it by then. Also the seniors in engineering were quite focused in studies and didn't have the time or inclination to harass new students. It was mostly funny interaction sessions like singing, dancing, with two pigtails and wearing salwar suits till we got our college uniforms. Who likes professors while in college? Now that I have passed out with flying colors and was invited by my college six months back as a guest, I had a great time interacting with all the professors who had taught me and I have deep respect for all of them for tolerating my pranks and my ‘I will not pay attention in class at any cost’ attitude during college time. Well there were no studies for me until a night before the exams. I hardly paid attention in class and would be lost in my thoughts and day dreaming. The saving grace was it was an engineering course and not any theoretical course so I didn't need to mug up much and overnight studying got me good marks. In my final year I was awarded the ‘best student’ trophy. I was actively involved in extracurricular activities like singing and doing plays apart from having made it to the best software firm Infosys technologies in my third year itself. I was a hostler. So I stayed within the campus. College life was the most amazing time of my life. Those four years were full of dreams, fun, pranks, yelling from professors, directors, parents and I made some amazing friends. Our favorite eating places were
who have suffered a lot of my pranks themselves and were with me all the while through thick and thin. We had fights too but they have taken care of me, loved me, supported me always and may be they can forget it, but I can never. It was embarrassing to land up at the chairman's office every now and then. Apart from that, once I took park in a ‘rangoli competition’ with one of my roommates and I was too excited even though we both knew nothing about designing rangolis. But as the competition finally started, I became my usual self, the prankster and started winning hearts with initials of boyfriend-girlfriend pairs in our friend circle which upset my roommate. She walked away and so did I. Meanwhile we got to know that the competition was over amid all our drama and the chairman's wife seeing our incomplete stupid rangoli of hearts etc, with both the participants invisible, got so irritated that she gave us minus ten for our art and left. This space is too small to write about all my pranks. I was quite a prankster. I used to do things which would make me land up at the chairman's office several times. Once I was asked to leave the class for not paying attention and instead of apologizing, I not only left the class happily but also started making gestures asking my friend also to come out and that we would rather go and have fun in the canteen than sit in the boring class. The professor was fuming and made us appear before the chairman and I heard him saying ‘suspend them’. I was horrified! It was only after apologizing in writing that we could get back to class again. My parents were relieved when finally I completed my engineering in the regular four years. Despite having a very mischievous and prankster image I got the best student award at the end of my course and I was crowned ‘Miss Freshers' in my first year. I attribute it My friend circle was amazing with girls to my singing which was appreciated by Kumar's in Rajpur Road, besides our college canteen and there I would sit there after and boys from not just my course and batch, everyone and I would sing in every college bunking classes. Also there was a small but from all other courses…seniors, juniors festival and competition. It was during colrestaurant opened for the hotel management everyone. Staying in a hostel opens up a vari- lege that the acting bug bit me and I am an students inside the campus where I enjoyed ety of friendships. But my closest friends actress today. were my roommates Smita and Priyanka having Chinese food and banana shakes. As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

Oceanographers apply the basic sciences to study the world’s oceans and coastal waters. They study the motion and circulation of the ocean waters and their physical and chemical properties, and how these properties affect coastal areas, climate, and weather. Often, they are chemists, physicists, biologists, or marine geologists who bring their special skills to ocean studies. Being essentially a research–oriented profession, long periods are spent away from civilization, at sea, with all its challenges and hazards. Depending upon the areas of specialisation they work in several fields such as marine biology, geological oceanography, physical oceanography and chemical oceanography.

Marine Biology: It is the study of life processes in marine environments. Marine biologists research different aspects of marine life and allied economic systems. Marine Geology: As many interesting geological features as there are on land, nearly as many exist under and at the boundaries of the oceans. Mountains, valleys, volcanoes, islands, plains, canyons, - all exist in similar form in the marine realm, the study of these structures is done by marine geologists.
Physical Oceanography: This deals with the physical properties of the ocean. Physical oceanographers study the interaction between the ocean and its boundaries -land, seafloor, and atmosphere - and the relationship between the sea, weather, and climate. Highly advanced systems are employed to study the vast water bodies. Complex systems developed through high-end programming and processing helps the oceanographers along with other scientists to perform tasks smoothly. While Chemical Oceanography: It deals making the best use of the water rewith the composition and quality of sources, you must also be a conserenthusiast. As an water. There are no fixed rules for promotion in most branches of this profession. How high one rises, and how fast, depends entirely on the individual's ability. In general, a senior management level post is reached after approximately 20 year's service. Increased awareness regarding marine resources and their potential has created a demand for ocean specialists with the ability to predict its future conditions. A wide range of environmental services, including various marine industries, are required in India over the next 20 years to support increasing marine activities including weather forecasting, the survey charting of coastal waters and so on.

was entertaining but you realize by the end how deeply those tiny battle scars run. It was a horrendous world they lived through. I realize only after the book that there was no hope in any of them. No hope that the god almighty would rise, or that maybe someone’s consciousness would start to tick. There was no right or wrong, there was no guilt. I was always taught through stories of Jesus and the Ramayana that good always prevails over evil. But they seemed to have given into performing the most lurid acts of slavery and insanity that there was no mention of the word humanity. Why? Because there was no hope or faith or fear or reverence of a higher power that dwelt amongst us humans. I had an epiphany, an epiphany that wiped away all my doubts about lighting a candle in front of an idol or watering a revered plant. This was our human way of humbling ourselves young Mathayus from joining the corps. Ashur incurs the undying enmity of the ruthless general Sargon (Randy Couture). Ashur is killed and Mathayus is forcibly sent to a desolate training camp for six years. When he returns as a Black Scorpio, Sargon is King of Akkad and demands loyalty from the Scorpios. Now Mathayus must decide he will avenge his father's death or serve under the man who killed him. King Sargon’s first task for Mathayus is to kill Mathayus’ own brother Noah who had blasphemed him. Mathayus refuses, saves his brother and escapes from the city. But a magic arrow follows them and kills Noah. Mathayus takes the help of his
towards that higher power. It is our way of keeping sane and human. That being lost during the time lived through by Katniss Everdeen. This book led me to believe there is a God. Whether he resides in a mere idol version of human imagination of him, or just in our hearts. It has led me to believe that ‘God’ is just the name we give him. To me he is an expansion of positive energy and he is seen in each act of kindness, he is felt within the reasoning of consciousness. He is the meaning, the definition, the soul, the origin of the word humanity. He is what binds me to even a stranger on the street. And if it isn’t for our humanity we might just slip into a holocaust period wherein we may just live the human race’s worst nightmare. We may just live the hunger games. We’ve already seen Hitler, we’ve seen world wars we might see more without our faith, hope and humanity.

As part of this new initiative, Google India will get 20 Million SMEs online by 2017 by using a simple mobile based app called, ‘Google My Busi-

ATNA: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday took on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his government completing one year in office, saying what people have got is 'selfie leadership' instead of 'selfless leadership' they had voted for in the Lok Sabha polls. Slamming his bete noire, Kumar said the only remarkable thing during the one-year NDA rule was that
Prime Minister Narendra Modi must maintain the dignity of the post he is holding and not behave like a "rockstar", Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Ajit Singh said on Tuesday. "A rockstar is a different thing. PM should not do such things. I am not against a rockstar but the PM behaving in such a manner is not right. He should maintain the dignity of the post," Singh told PTI. He claimed that the one-year of BJP-led NDA government was disappointing. "Yesterday, he (Modi) presented the report card of his one-year governance, but did not utter a single word about achche din," he said.

Its typical illustration of more style over substance, more raucous about nothing than the music of change to the ears of common man," he told PTI. Kumar in his blog claimed that even the most articulate ministers and supporters of 'Modi sarkar' do not have an answer to the question as to what has the government accomplished. "In contrast, any average person can easily tell you what the government did not deliver. Ask a farmer, an unemployed youth, a housewife, an artisan, an informed citizen, an academician or even the people who voted for Modi sarkar a year ago - they will have no problem articulating what the government did not deliver," he remarked.
Modi to visit Bangladesh on June 6-7 P
rime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a two-day visit to Bangladesh beginning June 6 with an aim to inject new momentum in the bilateral relationship by enhancing cooperation in connectivity, economic and other areas. During the visit, part of his policy to deepen engagement with India's immediate neighbourhood, Modi will hold wideranging talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina on the whole gamut of ties and ways to move forward further. Modi had earlier visited Nepal and Bhutan. Ties between India and Bangladesh are on an upswing ever since Hasina government came to power in January, 2009. Modi will be visiting at the invitation of Hasina who had extended the gesture through telephonic talk and writing a letter soon after Modi had led BJP to a landslide win in Lok Sabha elections in May, 2014. Thereafter, the two leaders had met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York in September last year and then again on the margin of SAARC Summit in Kathmandu in November the same year. Earlier this month, Parliament had passed a historic constitution amendment bill seeking to settle India's 41-year-old border issue with Bangladesh. The bill will operationalise the 1974 IndiaBangladesh Land Boundary agreement that provides for exchange of 161 enclaves adverselyheld by the the two countries. "This visit, Prime Minister's first to Bangladesh, reflects the importance attached by India to the bilateral relationship.
Women rights group protest Attackers will be paid back move to ‘legalise’ prostitution in same coin: Parrikar N
EW DELHI: Women rights groups from across the country on Tuesday joined hands here to oppose tooth and nail any move to 'legalise' prostitution. The agitating members including victims and survivors of sex trafficking, trade unions, political parties, NGOs of various social movements met with UN Women's Representative for India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Maldives, Rebecca Tavares here, to put forth their protest. "We demanded three things from UN Women. The first a sort of unofficial note which the UN Women is claiming was emailed to a whole bunch of NGOs," said Ruchira Gupta, Founder Apne Aap Women Worldwide, an anti-sex trafficking NGO. The note, issued in October 2013 from the UN Women office in New York supports the "legalisation and decriminalisation" of brothel-keeping, pimping and sex-buying as part of an "overall legitimisation" of the
commercial sex industry. "Since the note was not on official UN Women letterhead, UN Women claims it is an 'unofficial' document. But this note remain an uncontested de facto official position of UN Women," Gupta claimed. The rights groups shed light on the fact that UNAIDS briefing on legal status of sex work (February 2014) cite the 'unofficial' UN Women note as a proof of agreement on efforts to promote legalisation of pimping, brothel-keeping, the industry of prostitution and decriminalising the entire sex trade. Gupta after meeting Tavares claimed that "The UN Women representative clearly said the UN mandate is to protect girls and women and work towards their development. The UN will not do anything that will be detrimental to the cause of the welfare and development of women. She (Tavares) said she will take up the issue with her colleagues at the UN."

EW DELHI: Undeterred by the controversy over his earlier "terrorists have to be neutralised only through terrorists" remark, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has asserted that he will go to "any extent" to protect India and those who attack will be "paid back in the same coin". Parrikar noted that his remarks evoked a sharp reaction only from one country and, without naming Pakistan, said the question was about his reaction on the terrorist camps in Pakistan-occupiedKashmir supported by Pakistan. "So the response was based on that," he told PTI in an interview. He further added that the word "neutralise" does not mean only killing but also making terrorists switch the sides and surrendering. Underlining that his remark was generic and not against anyone in particular, Parrikar maintained that only a certain part of his remarks was picked up and highlighted. "Basically, if I have to defend my

That is the basic motto which one should have. "If someone harms my country, I have to take pro-active action....The army's basic purpose is that if anyone attacks the country, attack him back. Pay him back in the same coin," Parrikar asserted, underlining that one does not keep 13 lakh strong Army to "preach peace".

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, MAY 27, 2015
K
OLKATA: Former cricketer and Mumbai Indians icon Sachin Tendulkar has heaped praise on the IPL champion team's skipper Rohit Sharma, saying that he has grown as a leader over the years. "If you compare him today with what he was when he started out as Mumbai Indians captain, he is a far better captain today. He is much more confident now. He has gone through a lot of ups and downs as MI's captain and has faced a lot of challenges. These challenges only make you a better cricketer and a tougher person," Tendulkar said. Rohit led from the front in the final of IPL against Chennai Super Kings, scoring a half-century and putting on 119 runs with Lendl Simmons (68) to help Mumbai Indians post a massive 202 for five, and eventually win the trophy with a 41run victory. "I think his execution has been particularly good this season. Whatever we planned in the meetings and dressing room, he has been able to execute them very well. You can tell a lot about the captain from the feedback the bowlers give you. The bowlers bowl in the areas and execute the plans that the captain asks them to," Tendulkar told 'iplt20.Com'. "We can plan many things behind closed doors but it is up to the captain, the bowlers and the fielders to bring it all together. Rohit has done that well," he insisted. Tendulkar termed Mumbai Indians' amazing turnaround this season, after four straight losses, as "fantastic!".
At no stage any player was ready to put his head down thinking this is a difficult season and there is no future for us. We always saw the light at the end of the tunnel," Tendulkar said. The retired Indian batsman said former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, who currently coaches Mumbai Indians, still has the same approach to the game as in his playing days. "When we played against him, he always came across as a serious, fearless competitor who never wanted to give up. The same applied here. At no stage did he feel that we are out of the tournament. We need positive people with good experience around, and Ricky doesn't lack in any of those departments." Applauding Simmons, who seems to have solved the opening conundrum for Mumbai Indians, Tendulkar said, "I thought he batted beautifully throughout the tournament. He has been very consistent. I also felt that the other players played really well around him. He was the anchor of our team and because of him all the other players had the freedom to go and express Cricketer Rohit Sharma and his fiancee Ritika Sajdeh during an awards function in themselves." Mumbai on Monday. Asked which Mumbai Indians players were the find of this edition "We had a difficult start, really could change things around. It is of IPL, Tendulkar said: "Some of the tough one. Guru, Pranaav- I look upto Dhoni’s leadership skills for inspiration: Holder Ashwini reach main N draw of Aus Open S YDNEY: Commonwealth Games bronze medallist RMV Gurusaidutt and mixed doubles pair of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Ashwini Ponnappa reached the main draw of the USD 750,000 Australian Open badminton tournament. Guru, who had to endure a series of serious injuries of late, started his campaign with a bang as he brushed aside Malaysia's Ai Wei Jian 21-13 21-9 in the opening match, before prevailing over Japan's Kazumasa Sakai 2115 21-8 in the second clash of the qualifiers. Pranaav and Ashwini, too, made a positive start to their campaign in mixed doubles as they beat German combo of Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Herttrich 2119 21-17 in the first round. The Indian pair then defeated local shuttlers Cham Chen and Susan Wang 21-14 21-6 to make it to the main draw. Other Indians, including Olympic bronze medallist and defending champion Saina Nehwal, World no. 4 K Srikanth and Commonwealth Games champion P Kashyap, will start their campaign today. Two-time World Championship bronze medallist, P V Sindhu and Commonwealth Games silver medallist duo of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa, will also be seen in action today.
EW DELHI: Young West Indies ODI captain Jason Holder feels that his stint at Chennai Super Kings was a well spent one as he learnt about the nuances of captaincy from none other than India's limited overs skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. "MS is an influential figure. In true sense, he is a leader and I found that during my stint with Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. As a captain, I have always looked upto MS's leadership qualities for inspiration," Holder told PTI during an interaction.
Asked which qualities of Dhoni he would like to imbibe in his captaincy, Holder said,"The manner in which Dhoni handles pressure is exceptional. That is the reason he has achieved so much while leading a team with players from different countries. There is so much to learn from him." The 23-year-old Holder is one of three international captains that West Indies have currently. For the record, he played for SunRisers Hyderabad during the 2014 IPL season but didn't take part in the IPL due to West Indies' international commitments.
‘I have experienced more failure than success’
N
EW DELHI: India opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan says his ability to deal with the "inevitable failure" has helped him immensely in his five-year-old international career. "Now I am seen as a successful cricketer but the fact is that I have had more failure than success. You are bound to undergo hardships and it has been no different for me. I have played about 60 odd games (ODIs) and scored only eight hundreds. A lot of the guys worry about their form, for me it is just about being persistent and patient," Dhawan told PTI after interacting with the kids at the Smile Foundation here. With back-to-back cricket since the Australia tour last year, the Indian team has had a rather hectic schedule. Now that the IPL is over,
the team travels to Bangladesh next month for a short series. Dhawan has been a regular member of the team in all formats ever since he made a sensational Test debut in 2013, scoring a sublime 187 against Australia at Mohali. He has also experienced some dry patches since returning to the Indian team two years ago but he has overcome those testing times, the most recent being his impressive showing in the World Cup Down Under after struggling in the preceding Test and ODI series against Australia. "You have to have the persistence power, something that has helped me out over the years to deal with failures," stressed Dhawan, who spent quality time with the kids, alongside his wife and son.

Australian Bayliss appointed England head coach
L
ONDON: England turned to the old enemy in an attempt to restore national pride as Trevor Bayliss became the first Australian to be appointed head coach of the team on Tuesday. With an Ashes series against Australia looming on home soil in six weeks' time, the 52-year-old former Sri Lanka coach has been tasked with repairing battered reputations following England's 50 humiliation Down Under 16 months ago. “What particularly excites me about the role is the chance to work with a very talented group of players. I firmly believe that the team has a bright future and I’ll be doing everything I can to help them realise their potential and achieve success on a consistent basis,” Bayliss said in a statement. He succeeds Peter Moores, who was sacked earlier this month following England's dismal performance at this year's World Cup and a 1-1 draw in a test series in West Indies. "Trevor has an outstanding record as coach, has global experience and is very highly regarded in the game," England's director of cricket Andrew Strauss said. "He has proved himself in both domestic and international cricket, has a strong reputation for man-management and has shown how to build winning teams in all three formats."
HUGE TASK Bayliss faces the huge task of instilling some stability into England after their 5-0 mauling in Australia led to a period of turbulence, with off-field matters drawing as many headlines as the team's miserable form on the pitch. During the past 18 months, controversial batsman Kevin Pietersen was sacked after the England management accused of him of being a divisive presence in the dressing room during the doomed 2013-14 Ashes series. ECB managing director Paul Downton departed in April as he paid the price for England's failure to progress during the group stages of the World Cup. Moores was also axed for failing to guide England to a series win in the Caribbean against what many considered to be a weak West Indies team. Former Australia fast bowler Jason Gillespie was expected to be appointed to the role after talks with Strauss last week but Bayliss was chosen for his proven track record as a coach. He led Sri Lanka to the 2011 World Cup final and has twice won the Sheffield Shield with New South Wales.

ARIS: Roland Garros was abuzz as Rafa Nadal's belated first appearance at this year's French Open loomed but it was less celebrated Spaniard David Ferrer who was first in action on Tuesday, bustling through to the second round. Defending champion Nadal, looking to shake off a confidence crisis and win a record-extending 10th title here, topped a Court Phillipe Chatrier programme also featuring the man most likely to steal his crown, Novak Djokovic, and Serena Williams. That trio own a combined 41 grand slam singles titles between them and while the day three schedule was heavily-loaded for those with tickets for the main showcourt, there was plenty of quality elsewhere around the grounds. Seventh seed Ferrer, runner-up to Nadal two years ago, needed little more than an hour to thrash Slovakian Lukas Lacko 6-1 6-3 6-1, about the same time U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic required to hammer Dutchman Robin Haase 6-2 6-4 6-2. KVITOVA STRUGGLES TO REACH SECOND ROUND IN PARIS Czech fourth seed Petra Kvitova dug deep to reach the second round of the French Open as she laboured to a 6-4 3-6 6-4 victory against New Zealand's Marina Erakovic on Tuesday. The double Wimbledon champion looked nothing like the player who defeated world number one Serena Williams en route to the Madrid Open claycourt title earlier this month as she put in a shaky performance on court Philippe Chatrier. "I knew it would be difficult, I always struggle at the beginning of tournaments," Kvitova, who will next take on either France's Pauline Parmentier or Silvia Soler-Espinosa of Spain. Kvitova was under early pressure, facing four break points in her first three service games with Erakovic grabbing the last one to go 3-2 up when the Czech double faulted. Kvitova, however, broke back by converting her first break point in the eighth game as Erakovic sent a forehand just wide and the Czech went on to take the set on her opponent's serve.

Van Ass justified Rupinder’s axing, says working on variations
N
EW DELHI: In a surprise move, India axed ace drag-flicker Rupinder Pal Singh for the upcoming Hockey World League (HWL) Semifinal and the team's chief coach Paul van Ass justified the decision, saying it was a tactical move aimed at trying out "variations" ahead of the Rio Games. Besides Rupinder, midfielder SK Uthappa, strikers Mandeep Singh and Satbir Singh were the other players to have been dropped from the national team for HWL Semi-final to be played in Antwerp, Belgium from June 20 to July 5. Rupinder's axing came as a shock for all and sundry as over the last couple of years he became an integral part of the Indian team and also formed a formidable duo alongside VR Raghunath in the side's drag-flick department. But Van Ass clarified his choice and said by no means Rupinder was out of his scheme of things. "Of course, I am aware about that (only one dragflicker in the team) but Jasjeet also has a good penalty corner. It's also time for us to try variations," the chief coach told reporters during a training session at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium here. "He (Rupinder) is not gone, he is not done. He didn't do anything wrong but we also have to be prepared for any eventuality. Let's be honest when Olympic starts and suppose your two drag-flickers are injured, what do you do then? So, it's always a threat and its good to try out something else now," Van Ass said. All the four dropped players featured in last month's Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia, where India finished a creditable third, and the fourmatch bilateral Test series

against Japan which India won 3-0. Talking about Uthappa's ouster from the team, Van Ass said: "It's not over for the boys, they are not gone. I think he (Uthappa) doesn't play the way he is supposed to. He is a big athelete, his body is very big but he doesn't use it too much. I asked him to do that more and he can comeback again. "During team selections you have to be your best and also you have to fit in the tactical plan of coach. "Now we have a new core group of 33 and from that group I can always pick my players for a big tournament. Those guys will have to fight for positions until the Olympics," he added. The Team: GOALKEEPERS: PR Sreejesh, Harjot Singh. DEFENDERS: Manpreet Singh, Birendra Lakra, Kothajit Singh, VR Ragunath, Jasjit Singh Kular, Gurmail Singh. MIDFIELDERS: Gurbaj Singh, Dharamvir Singh, Sardar Singh, Chinglensana Singh, Lalit Upadhyay. FORWARDS: SV Sunil, Nikkin Thimmaiah, Yuvraj Walmiki, Akashdeep Singh, Ramandeep Singh.

DISMISSED BY RUTHLESS MADRID
M Flavio Briatore, former Renault team boss with Fernando Alonso.
Fernando Alonso better off at McLaren: Flavio Briatore L
ONDON: Fernando Alonso made the right move in leaving Ferrari for McLaren even if he has yet to score a point this season, according to the man who has steered the Spaniard's Formula One career from the start. Italian Flavio Briatore, the flamboyant and controversial former Renault team boss, told Reuters Alonso was happy to be back at the misfiring former champions and enjoying the challenge. "I believe at one point in Ferrari it was over, from both sides. I believe it was a good change," the manager said of the move. McLaren is a serious team. Honda we know is a great company and we are there. I don't think the situation of (Australian Daniel) Ricciardo (at Red Bull) is better than that of Fernando. In Formula One at the moment you have one team and it's Mercedes. Whatever other team you are second, and second is the first of the losers." While Alonso has yet to score a point in his six races, Ferrari have been on the podium in every grand prix this season with the Spaniard's replacement Se-
bastian Vettel finishing second in Monaco on Sunday. McLaren ended their drought in that race with Jenson Button finishing eighth. Briatore, who was banned from Formula One after a 2008 Singapore Grand Prix race-fixing scandal but subsequently had the ruling overturned, felt Ferrari were still no closer to dethroning Mercedes even if they appeared to be more competitive. "(In qualifying) Vettel was seven tenths from Lewis (Hamilton) and last year Fernando was fifth (on the grid for Ferrari) and seven tenths (off pole)," he said, speaking at during the race weekend at the principality. "Between Ferrari and Mercedes it is the same distance. The problem is three or four teams are not there any more. With Honda and McLaren, we have a better future." ENGINE TROUBLE Honda have returned to Formula One this season to renew a partnership with McLaren that enjoyed rare dominance in the late 1980s when Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost were team mates.
ADRID: Just 366 days since delivering Real Madrid their muchawaited 10th Champions League title, Carlo Ancelotti became club president Florentino Perez's latest managerial victim as he was sacked on Monday. Ancelotti, 55, ultimately paid for failing to build on the best run of results in the club's history, in late 2014, with no major trophy at the end of the season. "During these two years, Carlo Ancelotti has earned the affection of the board and of myself personally, as well as all the fans," Perez told a news conference. "But Real Madrid is extremely demanding and we believe it is time to give a new impulse that will allow us to win new titles and reach our maximum level." Beaten by a treble-seeking Barcelona in La Liga and eliminated by city rivals Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey, Ancelotti's last chance of keeping his job was ended when one of his former clubs Juventus progressed to the Champions League final at Madrid's expense earlier this month. Madrid had won the Club World Cup on a streak of 22 consecutive victories between September and December to add to the Copa del Rey and UEFA Super Cup in a record four-trophy haul in 2014. At that point the Madrid press talked of a new contract for the Italian with the club keen for him to become their Sir Alex Ferguson, the legendary Scottish coach who spent 26 years in charge of Manchester United before re-
Prince Ali approached by individual offering votes Z
URICH: FIFA presidential candidate Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein's election team informed police after being approached by an individual who said he could deliver 47 votes at Friday's election, they said on Tuesday. The approach was made in April and the individual also offered to provide "what appeared to be illegally obtained" information relating to the financial activities of FIFA president Sepp Blatter, his campaign added. The individual was not identified, although the campaign said he was a third party, who was not part of FIFA nor connected to any national football association. The matter was referred to Quest, a UK-based corporate intelligence firm, who were asked to contact the police and the offer was rejected. FIFA's ethics committee,
however, was not informed. "Our goal was not to create a campaign issue but to properly react to an approach made to us that appeared to involve criminal activity," Prince Ali's campaign said in a statement sent to Reuters. "The campaign did not want to do anything that could jeopardise the police

investigation "Because the claims made by the individual strongly suggested criminal acts, Quest referred the matter to the proper law enforcement authorities. "We did not engage the FIFA Ethics Committee because the individuals concerned were third parties who were not part of FIFA, nor were they National Association representatives." Quest, headed for former London police commissioner John Stevens said in a previous statement that Prince Ali had engaged them in January to ensure "the highest levels of integrity and ethical standards throughout his campaign for the presidency of FIFA". "The individual's claims to have obtained information illegally are now under police investigation," Quest said.

replace Jose Mourinho in 2013. Ancelotti perfectly fitted the profile needed by Madrid after Mourinho's three-year scorched earth policy left the club divided in the stands and the dressing room. Billed as the "peacemaker", Ancelotti united the dressing room and avoided the constant confrontation and controversy Mourinho sought. Former AC Milan star Paolo Maldini once described Ancelotti as as "teddy bear" who never loses his temper. fans were not calling for Ancelotti's head. World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo increased the pressure on his president when he posted on his official Twitter account after Saturday's season-ending 7-3 demolition of Getafe: "Great coach and amazing person. Hope we work together next season." According to a survey carried out by Madrid-based sports daily Marca, 73 percent of the club's members also wanted Ancelotti to stay. Ultimately, though, Perez needed a scapegoat for the world's most expensively assembled squad failing to deliver when it mattered most. Ancelotti does carry some of the blame for that failure. His reluctance to rotate his starstudded squad against even the weakest of opponents with many players coming off a World Cup that has left them short on gas at the business end of the season. Moreover, despite winning titles in Italy, England and France, Ancelotti's overall league record is surprisingly poor. In 15 seasons in charge of Juventus, AC Milan, Chelsea, PSG and Madrid he has delivered the championship just three times. In what turned out to be his final appearance in front of the media on Saturday, Ancelotti claimed the conquest of "La Decima" last season may have been the best moment in Real Madrid's history. At a club with a famously short memory even that wasn't enough to save Ancelotti and Perez now has to find a successor to kick his under-performing galacticos into gear. Perez said the new coach would be named next week.
‘Some Asian championship bound athletes yet to undergo dope tests’
N
EW DELHI: At least 10 track and field athletes, mostly relay runners, are yet to undergo dope tests, though the Indian team for next month's Asian Championships in China leaves the country in three days' time, according to sources. This may lead to a situation where India sends athletes to the championships whose dope status is not known as it is unlikely to get the results of the tests conducted on them before their May 30 departure. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has selected 20 athletes for the June 3-7 Asian Athletics Championships in Wuhan and they will name the relay runners (men's and women's
4x100m and 4x400) after trials at NIS Patiala and Bangalore today. It is learnt that the AFI has asked the NADA to take dope samples of the relay runners after the trials today and sources said that this was being done after some athletes, including women quartermilers, went missing when a World Anti-Doping Agency dope testing team visited the SAI-LNCPE, Thiruvananthapuram early this month. Significantly, the trials of the women's 4x400m relay, which was earlier scheduled to be held in Thiruvananthapuram today, has been shifted to NIS Patiala. The quartermilers
camping at SAI-LNCPE, Thiruvananthapuram will now have trials at NIS Patiala where they will also give dope samples to a NADA team. "It is not a secret that at least seven quartermilers went missing when a WADA team came calling at Thiruvananthapuram. Somebody tipped them off and they left the center the day prior to the WADA team arrives," an athletics coach told PTI on the condition of anonymity. "NIS Patiala is a place where dope testing is done on a regular basis and it's more difficult to escape testing there than at Bangalore and T’thapuram camps," he said.
