Eco-warriors’ mixed reaction over BMC transforming dead trees into art MNS corporator Sandeep Deshpande requested BMC to make dead trees look alive by painting and decorating them Pics: Azad Shrivastav | ADC

If you think that the dead trees are of no use for the city, a bunch of artists have taken up responsibility to transform dead trees across the city into an colourful artwork like these at (left) the Shivaji Park in Dadar and (right) Diamond Garden in Chembur.

was begun by Maharahstra Navnirman Sena (MNS) corporator Sandeep Deshpande, who had requested BMC that instead of cutting down the dead trees it could be brought back to 'life' by painting and decorating them. Thus BMC's pilot project began and the trees are being given a street decoration and painting to make them look 'alive' and attractive. Two such trees were spotted at Shivaji Park at Dadar and Chembur by the ADC.
Nandakumar Pawar, an environmentalist and Vanashakti NGO worker agree with the idea. “While the battle is lost in protecting dead rain trees in Mumbai, it is fine by the BMC to decorate them, make them look attractive and alive for the people. Although I would advocate the BMC to take better care of the rain trees in Mumbai as per Bombay High Court orders, this initiative is also fine,” said Pawar. Rishi Aggarwal, another environ-
mentalist and one of the leading campaigners of Save Aarey Campaign said that the BMC should promote street art somewhere else. “I feel that the BMC should rather replace the dead trees with live trees since the purpose of the trees is to give shade, produce oxygen, etc. Promoting street art through trees should not be the priority of the BMC,” said Aggarwal. Mehjabeen Barmani, an NGO worker at Juhu Citizens Welfare Group at Juhu have along with her
colleagues also taken this initiative. “We painted some dead trees near Jamnabai Narsee School. With the permission of the BMC we have been able to give these dead trees a good look,” said Barmani. The project is funded by the MNS under the BMC's corporate social responsibility scheme, for which the civic body has roped in a team of painters led by sculptor Pankaj Chavan. Once painted, the tips of the branches will be fitted with rubber artifacts.

Man covered in 1.1 million bees sets Guinness World record A beekeeper in China has a set a new Guinness World record after covering his body with almost 1.1 million crawling bees weighing a massive 109 kg. Gao Bingguo, a 55-year-old beekeeper from Tai'an City, recently took the challenge by having
beekeepers pour the insects onto his body. He was stung over 2,000 times and his body temperature rose to over 60 degrees Celsius, but he survived the ordeal and set a new record, smashing the previous one of over 85kg of bees.
Dozens of queen bees were first attached in order to attract more of the honey-making insects. Gao who was wearing only his underpants later calmly smoked as thousands of bees crawled over his body to prevent them from swarming his lips. Gao is no stranger to bees, having kept them for over 35 years. The process ended with Gao's entire body covered with 109kg of bees. It is estimated that the number of bees on Gao at that moment was roughly equivalent to 1.1 million.
China now home to a million ‘super rich’
Gao Binggua was stung over 2,000 times and his body temperature rose to 60 degrees.
THE number of high net worth individuals (HNWIs) in China has passed the one million mark for the first time last year following a surge in the 'innovative industries' sector, a study has shown. Defined as having more than 10 million yuan (US $1.6 million) of investable assets, the country's super rich totalled 1.04 million at the end of last year, or twice the number recorded in 2010. The annual study is compiled by consulting firm Bain & Co and China Merchants Bank, state-run Shanghai Daily reported. China's investable assets rose by
16 per cent annually between 2012 and 2014 to 112 trillion yuan last year, the report said, adding that the figure is set to grow to 129 trillion yuan this year. Many of the 'new rich' came from innovative industries such as IT, biotechnology and alternative energy, the report said. About 80 per cent of them are aged under 50. Guangdong province has the most wealthy individuals, with more than 1,00,000, though Shanghai and Beijing, and the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shandong and Sichuan each have more than 50,000.
Katy Perry, John Mayer dating again?
POP star Katy Perry and her onand-off boyfriend John Mayer are seemingly back together again. The couple sparked rumours that they were rekindling their relationship as they were photographed going on a cozy Disneyland date in Anaheim, California over the weekend. Accompanied by some of their close friends, Perry, 30, and 37year-old Mayer reportedly enjoyed most of the theme park's iconic rides including Space Mountain. Although the 'Half of My Heart' singer was said to opt out the
famous ride, the songstress enjoyed the ride with her pals. The couple and their entourage were also spotted dropping by exclusive Club 33 restaurant for dinner. Perry and Mayer seemingly tried not to attract people's attention during the outing by wearing matching hoodies. People, however, still recognised their famous faces, taking their pictures as they wandered around the park. The couple was said to enjoy the trip as they didn't leave the park until its closing time in the midnight. Previously, Perry and Mayer were also seen spending time together as the pair had a romantic meal at Los Angeles hot spot Ysabel in early April. They were joined by another couple during the outing.
Jennifer Lopez debuts short hair

This was being done as the decision was taken this year and the decision in full will be introduced all over the state from the next academic year. It may be recalled that the de-
cision was announced recently by Minister for Minority Affairs Eknath Khadse which had evoked sharp reaction from the Shiv Sena. Commenting upon the vacant posts of directors in Technical Education and Cultural Affairs departments, Tawde stated that the government is now planning to recruit professionals from related fields. He said that the problem was that the government until now was running the administration of these departments with the help of officials who at times were not well versed with the functioning of the departments. Tawde stated that the matter of recruiting professionals from those fields had till recently been caught in red tape.

He added that he had charged only Rs 11,000 since he was only “finding his footing” in the business and aimed largely at creating a client base rather than making a lot of money as of for now. Sonu’s expensive mobile phone stolen by guests? Theft occurred inside his flat during a party, FIR registered By Zuber Ansari
F
amous Bollywood singer cum actor Sonu Nigam has filed an FIR against unidentified persons for alleged theft of his expensive mobile phone during a party at his flat. The singer in his police complaint mentioned that on the day of the incident, there were around 13 guests at his residence. After the conclusion of the party he could not locate his Samsung Galaxy Note III phone. Sonu Nigam on Tuesday went to the Versova police station and stated that he was sure that the phone was not misplaced but somebody has flicked it, since he tried calling his number and the phone was coming switched off. Police say that they have registered an FIR against an unidentified miscreant. “ During the party on Sunday there were only 13 guests and his male servant. We
have thoroughly interrogated the servant but he seems to be totally in the dark. In fact, he himself started searching for it first. We asked Nigam if suspected anyone in particular, but he was reluctant to name any. Now, we have asked him to provide us with a list of all the 13 guests present at his residence during the party.” We have taken his mobile's IMEI number and put it on tracking, but we can discover it's exact location only when the instrument is switched on, police added.

The decision to hike auto and taxi fares is on tenterhook that will be resolved only after HC resumes its work on June 8
By Aroosa Ahmed
A
day after transport minister Diwakar Raote called an urgent meeting of transport department officials at the Mantralaya on Tuesday over Rs.1 hike in auto and taxi fares, infighting between their unions began on Wednesday, as taxi drivers have to say that recalibration of their electronic metres within 45 days is a tiresome job. There is temporary sigh of relief for commuters as the matter to hike auto and taxi fares from June 1 awaits judicial determination by Bombay High Court that will resume its work on June 8 after summer vacation. A.L Quadros, Leader, Mumbai Taximen Union, said, “We do not want the fare hike and have written to the MMRTA not to increase the fare as our taxi drivers will have to do the whole process of recalibration again. There are many taxi drivers who come in everyday and tell me that why do the whole recalibration process just for a single rupee, we do not want it to increase. However, if the government is stern with the increase in fare then they
should provide a six months period for recalibration. 45 days for recalibration is just not enough as the queues are so long, the taxi drivers stand in heat and the elderly taxi drivers are not able to wait for long. However, contrary to that Thampy Kurian, General Secretary, Mumbai Autorickshaw Union, said, “We had demanded for the fare hike only after doing the calculations and checking out figures, that is only when we reached the MMRTA with our demands, after calculations we found out that the Rs.1 hike would sum upto Rs 30,000 profit in a year for the autorickshaw drivers. Commenting that the fare hike is not required is baseless and I don't know why the taxi union is stating that it would be a tough period, re-calibration happens in one day. aroosa.ahmed@afternoondc.in

Who is Delhi’s boss — AAP or the governor? C
HIEF Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been waging a war with the governor ever since his party took over rule in Delhi. The city requires good governance and many amenities: It is a city with many and growing problems. The people of the city are not getting basic amenities. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had promised to bring about changes and improve the lot of people. The AAP is involved in a war with the governor. The fight is about who is the boss in Delhi. Kejriwal says an elected government has full right to carry out rule. The governor says he alone has powers to play an important part in governing the state. The fight has become big and bitter over the last few weeks. Arvind Kejriwal has approached the President, but the latter has not chosen to reply. Maybe he is still studying the issue. And an urgent meeting of the assembly has been called. A state assembly is expected to discuss important issue pertaining to the citizens. It makes laws, it takes decisions about welfare schemes and funding new initiatives. The assembly this time was called only to discuss the war between the governor and AAP. With the ruling party deeply engrossed in a power war, the interests of the city are being neglected. The president should not remain silent. He should express his opinion on the disputed issue: who is Delhi’s boss — AAP or the governor?

VEN as the nation is celebrating the first anniversary of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's regime at the Centre, a Dravidian dominated state of the South, Tamil Nadu, was celebrating the return of their ‘Amma’ to the reign the state. After a gap of eight months, Jayalalithaa Jayaram returned to power and with a bang. She proved to be victorious as her stand was vindicated, thanks to the Karnataka High Court that acquitted her of all charges of corruption leveled and proven against her, by her arch rivals, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Jayalalithaa, the seasoned politician that she is, did not waste even a day and worked on Sunday to announce the most ambitious and multi-crore ‘Amma Canteen’ scheme, obviously to prepare for snap State Assembly polls, that could take place any time within the next few months from now. Now that a lot is written and spoken about the rise, fall and rise of Jayalalithaa during the last ten days, there are many areas still remain uncovered in her turbulent and roller-coaster political career that followed her equally interesting silver screen life as one of the most popular South Indian actress of the 60s. A woman, an actress, a Brahmin, a Kannadiga…! Conventional wisdom would suggest that resume is all wrong for the hard playfield of Tamil Nadu politics and that too in a Dravidian party. But then Jayalalithaa’s life and career is the stuff fairy tales are made of. Or movie scripts with happy endings.
A long journey The fame and celebrity she earned as a successful actress would pale in comparison with what she would achieve in her later years. At 67, Jayalalithaa is a political giant not only in Tamil Nadu, where she took oath as chief minister for the fifth time last Saturday, with two of her three terms punctuated by brief spells of political exile. Brand Jayalalithaa is an undeniable presence at the national level, most emphatically after last year’s national election, when her party swept 37 of Tamil Nadu’s 39 seats, making her All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) the third largest party in the Lok Sabha after the BJP and the Congress. Her stunning victory in the assembly elections of 2011 had ensured that her party’s tally of 11 in the Rajya Sabha cannot be scoffed at either, especially in times when the BJP-led central government is in a minority in the House and often depends on regional parties like Jayalalithaa’s to help it pass crucial legislation. When Jayalalithaa was convicted in September last year in a corruption case by a Bangalore trial court, her political rivals celebrated the possibility that she would not be able to contest elections for another decade. That, they reckoned, would mean the end of

the AIADMK, a party that revolves completely around its chief. However, eight months later, the Karnataka High Court has acquitted her and she is back. To her many supporters Jayalalithaa is ‘mother’ (Amma) or Puratchi Thalaivi a ‘Revolutionary Leader’. She was Ammu to M.G. Ramachandran or MGR, her political mentor, at whose statue she paid tribute in her first public appearance in eight months, last Saturday. She acknowledges MGR as one of the most important influences in her life. The other is her mother, Sandhya, an actress who fell on hard times and had to send her 15-year-old
political legacy. Came 1991 Assembly elections and Jayalalithaa registered a huge victory to became Chief Minister for the first time. However, she lost the 1996 Tamil Nadu elections and the DMK government that succeeded her filed the corruption case that she was acquitted in earlier this month. She won her second term in 2001 and her third in 2011. Jayalalithaa, who is single, speaks English, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi fluently. MGR is said to have sent her to the Rajya Sabha as she spoke English very well. An accomplished dancer, Jayalalithaa trained in classical dance forms like Bharatnatyam, Mohini Attam, Kathak and Manipuri and performed all over India. She also started learning Carnatic music at the age of four and sang several songs in her own films.
A voracious reader
THINKING ALOUD Bharatkumar Raut daughter to a film studio rather than college. Jayalalithaa was born in Mysore. She lost her father when she was only two. She began schooling at the Bishop Cotton Girls High School in Bangalore and later attended the Presentation Convent at Church Park, Chennai, when her mother began a career as a Tamil film actress and moved the family base to Chennai. Jayalalithaa was a good scholar and is said to have wanted to become a lawyer and be rich. She wouldn’t be a lawyer, but she would be rich — a successful film career lay ahead. Chinnada Gombe, her first film (in Kannada) was a major hit. She was revolutionary and is said to have been the first to wear skirts on screen. Jayalalithaa also acted in a few Bollywood films. She starred in 28 films with Tamil Superstar MGR, who later founded the AIADMK after the death of the great Davidian leader and the founder of DMK, Anna Durai. Jayalalithaa’s last film was Nadhiyai Thedi Vandha Kadal in 1980. In 1982, at the age of 34, she joined the AIADMK and went straight to the top echelons of the party as propaganda secretary, much to chagrin of many seasoned partymen, and was soon nominated to the Rajya Sabha. MGR died in 1987, in harness as Chief Minister. The next year the AIADMK split with one faction supporting MGR’s wife Janaki and the other supporting Jayalalithaa, who laid claim to her mentor’s
The AIADMK chief is a voracious reader and has a large private library with a huge collection of books. Her favourite authors are Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw and also Sidney Sheldon, Danielle Steel, Pearl S. Buck and James Hadley Chase. Even as an actress, she would always carry books with her to the studio, and would sit quietly by herself in a corner and read between shots. In short, Jayalalithaa is a politician with difference. She is a soft spoken but firm in her resolution and tough in taking decisions followed by quick execution and action. Now that she is back in power and action, she has many tasks to finish. The first and foremost is to uproot DMK to make her path smooth and without any further hurdle. If she decides to call snap poll to catch all opponents including Congress unaware, she would do it sooner than later. Considering that the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections are due next year, she will have to act swiftly and quickly. Will she do this or implement a few more popular schemes to register a ‘mammoth’ win in the next House? However, the immediate problem that she is feared to face is if the DMK or the Congressled Karnataka government decide to move the Supreme Court against the verdict of Karnataka High Court, Jayalalithaa would have another headache and era of uncertainty hanging on her head. It is to be seen as to how she manages this eventuality. Though she had a spell in Rajya Sabha, Jayalalithaa never nurtured ambitions to enter nation-level politics. But if she continues with the pace and direction that she is going now, she will have the opportunity to play a ‘big’ role in Delhi. Would she like to move her house from Poes Garden residence in Chennai to Lutyens area of Delhi? @BharatkumarRaut

APROPOS your cover story 'Acche din nowhere in sight' (ADC May 26), PM Modi and the BJP have extracted huge capital from the UPA regime mega-scams like 2G and Coalgate. They have been broadcasting from every platform that nothing similar has occurred in the last one year of their rule. While this is technically true, it obscures the fact that corruption among bureaucrats and their underlings continues unabated and apparently without fear. It seems that nothing has changed. For sure, Modi has taken visible and popular measures like forcing bureaucrats and their juniors to report to work on time and put in long hours. But as far as the far more important of corruption is concerned, it is business as usual. The bureaucrats do not seem overly concerned or apprehensive about retribution or penal action from their authoritarian big boss. If one looks at it objectively, scams like 2G and Coalgate only indirectly affected the common man. It is the day to day corruption at a lower level which causes real pain to the general population. In this respect, the acche din are indeed a distant dream.

nities on the basis of being Muslim is nothing new and it prevails in the post Independence secular democracy in our country. The concept behind this perversity is to show that the Muslims in this country are the slaves and they are none to develop any stake in the power sharing. Muslims in our country are denied jobs on one pretext or the other. The justification is made on the false reason and logic. It is not difficult to ride roughshod over the criteria of merit on the flimsy ground. What is unique and new emerging in the whole scenario is that in the case of Zeeshan Khan, the applicant for job the city based diamond export firm was bold enough to state that the said diamond export firm only hired non Muslims. Such boldness and audacity stems from the fact that any harsh and illegal response would not attract any action or punishment from the authorities. This is quite evident from the fact that the inflammatory and incendiary statements are made and no law is invoked to restrain such obnoxious stuff. — Adv. Masood Peshimam, Kalyan

Mom’s seeks ‘Groom for Son’, ad elicits good response A
matrimonial advertisement placed by a woman in a newspaper looking for a groom for her son has generated keen response getting over 150 inquiries, including a few hate mails. Those who have shown interest in the proposal include a few from abroad and cuts across religious divide. The ad had led to a heated debate in social media with
gay and lesbian activists supporting the move of 58-yearold Padma Iyer, while others slammed the idea of samesex marriage saying homosexuality is illegal in India. The advertisement published in a city tabloid on May 19 said "Seeking 25-40, Well-placed, Animal-Loving, Vegetarian GROOM for my SON (36, 5'11") who works with an NGO..."
The man who is looking for a partner is 36-year-old activist Harish Iyer, who works with a local NGO. "Yes, out of the 150 responses that my mother has received so far, about 75 per cent of them are encouraging while a few others are hate and abusive mails," Harish, who realised his sexual orientation at a young age of 14 and revealed it to his mother at 22, told PTI.

What a gentleman! He’s dependable, polite, poised and dignified, and there’s never a button out of place on his crisp, well-ironed shirt. But, are we tired of him? Read on as the Woman’s World Team finds out whether women in the city are still enamoured by the classic gentleman
S
ince we aren’t living in an age dominated by the gentleman, we can credit popular culture for introducing us to the infamous male type. He’s every woman’s dream guy — a balanced mix of good looks and appealing charm. Women lust over him, but he remains perfectly poised; he switches effortlessly between being your knight in shining armour and your voice of reason when you’re being characteristically hysterical. Switch to an offscreen setting that’s a little less of a daydream though and is that really what women want? Don’t we want to open our own doors, pull out our own chairs, pay our own bills and occasionally rock a biker chic look in the rider’s seat? And then of course, there’s the bad boy situation. The hotlydebated bad boy versus gentleman war never seems to end. To get a clearer picture, we thought we would ask women in the city about exactly what they want.
>> While the women we spoke to like courteous men, they aren’t fans of men who baby them
Women are not delicate! There are gentlemen, and then there are men who think we’re not capable enough. 27year-old Faye Rodrigues sets the tone by honing in on the one thing that seems to upset several women when attempt to act like gentlemen. According to her, men need to stop thinking that women, are delicate. She explains, “Personally I’ve never liked the damsel in distress concept, through which the chivalrous man was born. I can do things myself, and while it’s sometimes nice to have a gentleman around, I don’t think I can stand that for too long. It would get annoying if he thought that I couldn’t do anything for myself because if I lift a finger, it would break.”

applies to good men as well. The CEO and co-founder of Soulflower tells us, “I believe that strait-laced is no fun. It’s fun when good guys are sometimes bad! You’d rather have a good guy with a bad streak than a bad guy, who is never good! I also like to believe that chivalry is non-

gentleman today. But, is Reem’s perfect man the gentleman? She tells us, “Being pampered once in a while does feel good, but I would not want a man to pay for me all the time. A little bit of the bad boy is always fun and is definitely a turn on. I would prefer a mix of both because otherwise, life would be really boring.” She does draw a line though — she tells us that she hates when a man

>> If you’re a guy reading this, you may want to read what women in the city have to say about your eagerness to pay on every date!
respeCt women We’re inclined to agree with what Glynda Alves thinks of gentlemen. For the 30-yearold media professional, the definition of a gentleman is pretty simple — it’s someone who respects women and, she adds, the elderly and animals too! She tells us, “Too much of the chair pulling and door opening is annoying. Women have arms. A little bit now and then (like on a special occasion) is fine, but if he’s tripping over himself to be a gent, it’s going to get in the way of us becoming best friends, which is a relationship goal.”
Be gentlemanly, But fun Payal Jain, a PR consultant, raises a point that several women we spoke to find very important. She tells us that it’s great to be a gentleman, but the man also needs to be a fun and should know how to keep a woman interested. She tells us, “It’s hard to tell how much of a gentleman I would want my guy to be. There are times when I want a prince, who is extremely well mannered and a perfect 10/10. But, when that perfectionist is too perfect, you need someone who knows how to spoil you — someone who makes you a fun person, someone who makes your stomach hurt when you laugh. I always fancied someone who was a combination of Richard Gere from Pretty Woman and Chuck Bass from Gossip Girl (who brings out the bad in me).” Balance is key, according to Payal, and a guy should know when to be a gentleman and when to be fun and spice things up.
Be responsiBle Like most women we spoke to, even Sakshi Monga, 25-year-old founder of online shopping store Pretty Please Me, wants her man to have a bit of a bad side. However, she tells us that for her, a gentleman is someone who is responsible, respects the people around him, isn’t dominating and is calm and composed. But, she adds, “To an extent, bad boys are fun to be with. They bring enjoyment and excitement to your life and are a surprise package, which is necessary! Trust me, you get to know a different side of yourself when you’re with them. However, everything is fun within limits. I like men who are witty and charming.” Just like a bad guy can sometimes cross lines, Sakshi tells us that gentleman too can get annoying. She explains, “A gentleman can sometimes be over-obsessed or too particular about things, which is annoying. The right blend is what a woman seeks. I personally believe that every gentleman has a boy hidden in him and sometimes their wild/ bad side can be exciting and fun. It’s just a matter of exploring this side and making them aware of and comfortable with it.”

would love my guy to be notorious and playful, but I would not encourage him to be a complete wreck. My guy should know how to have fun and be responsible at the same time. You can’t shun your responsibilities for the sake of fun. It’s best to have a slice of both.”
lot, 26-year-old Chandricha Sinha also adds loyalty to the mix. She also tells us that a gentleman is someone who knows the importance of time and is always on time! She tells us, “No one would like to be with a guy who is a lost cause. But, everyone likes a guy who is a little crazy sometimes and often fun. I would draw the line when the guy is a complete jerk. I wouldn’t want him to create any problems for me, or for anyone else either.”
we don’t ‘need’ it So, what’s the conclusion? Well, girls love a gentleman — there’s no doubt about that. But what 24-year-old Divya Khurrana, a doctor by profession, has to say, perfectly underlines how much of a gentleman a guy should really be. She tells us, “His gestures should represent love, care and respect. But, if he goes overboard and plays the gentleman card because he thinks I need it instead of because I deserve it, that’s annoying. For example, I can carry a heavy rucksack myself, but if he insists on carrying it because he thinks I can’t, it’s annoying.”
mix a little adventure with some gentlemanliness We think that Priyanka Gill, the founder and editor-inchief of POPxo.com, echoes what most women we spoke to have been telling us quite well. She says, “A gentleman is courteous, considerate and chivalrous — so, we absolutely adore him. If a bad boy stands for someone with an adventurous streak, and who makes us feel super-sexy all the time, we do like such guys too! But, if a bad boy is someone whose idea of romance is constant drunken binges and hangovers, we wouldn’t like that. A guy who is fun to be with, but acts like a jerk towards us is not a bad boy — he is just a bad boyfriend. So, bring on the adventurous bad boy, add in a generous measure of gentlemanly qualities and you have the guy that we actually want to date!”
a BalanCe of Both For 25-year-old Richa Harlaka, gentlemen are passé. She prefers notorious guys as they can bring a smile to your face. She tells us, “Bad boys definitely have a unique charm. I
Come together The girls at Digisha Shah Public Relations gave us a little treat, when five of them decided that their opinions mimicked one another’s well enough to give us a group quote. The five girls told us, “We don’t like it when men pay the bill at a restaurant. The rule should be — If I eat, I’ll pay — mostly at least! When they assume you’re an infant and always try to protect you before crossing the road, we’re cringing. Honey, we can look both ways too! And a complete turn off is when they think we won’t want to make a sandwich for them because it’s sexist. Being too careful is ridiculous — sometimes we’d like to make you a sandwich!” Instead, the girls want men to be less pretentious and stop trying so hard — natural is always the best, whether they’re gentlemen or not. After all, “No one likes a pig in bear fur!” they joke. They’d love someone who is a cross between Ryan Gosling during the day and Robert Downey Jr. at night. We think that’s a great idea too!

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, MAY 28, 2015 >> LivSpace.com helps you spruce up your home on a larger scale
While shopping for home décor, one of the biggest hurdles, whether it’s online or at a brick-and-mortar store, is figuring out whether a particular piece will look good in your home. That’s where LivSpace.com comes in. It helps you create and design an entire room. Dev Goswami speaks to co-founder, Shagufta Anurag to find out more
D
esign is a finicky concept — flick through a home décor magazine and you’ll be treated to pictures of beautiful homes splashed across glossy pages. But, while you lust over recreating that design, you realise that creating the same look in your home can prove to be impossible. These pictures are shot with great attention to detail — something that isn’t practical in daily life. But, LivSpace.com aims to change that. In the same way that clothing websites offer you the option to buy an entire look (complete with matching accessories), LivSpace.com helps you mimic the look that you see in a picture on their website — or, at least, a customised version that suits your home. We spoke to Shagufta Anurag, the co-founder and chief design officer of LivSpace.com, about the website, design in general and how it can impact our daily life. n The concept of LivSpace.com seems
pretty interesting! How did it all start? LivSpace.com is an end-to-end home design experience and curated marketplace for home owners and designers. As opposed to buying a piece online, which is a service that several retailers offer, and which require a lower level of involvement, we offer a replacement buying experience. We offer to design your home on a larger scale, which involves a personal experience, followed by a visual one, for both the owner and designer. The birth of LivSpace.com was triggered by the painful experience of designing and setting up my own home, as well as the scarce availability of designs in a onestop shop format.
n As you said, design is all around us. How
do you think it impacts our lives? We spend a large amount of our time indoors — at school, work, home, shops, cafés, clubs or events. Design impacts our lives in everything that we do, from the way we work to the way we perform simple tasks at home. A good design enhances our living and improves efficiency in the spaces that we inhabit. It is a creative response of connecting things, connecting the dots and transforming complexity to simplicity.
n Which one of your projects makes
you proudest? I’m extremely proud of the Andheri shelter in Mumbai. It’s being designed for 100 children in an abandoned building, which was donated by the government. The shelter will be a day-care facility during the day and a space for street children to sleep in during the night. The interiors are designed for flexibility, while the exterior spaces are designed for workshops, recreation, gardening and events. n What trends or design elements do you
believe work best for homes in Mumbai, considering that space comes at a premium in the city? I see great similarities between Mumbai, New York and Singapore. Spaces are compact in these cities, making the need for efficiency a crucial factor while designing a home. So, while ensuring efficiency is critical, it’s even more important to make sure that the spaces are functional and sometimes even multifunctional. For example, a single area in a house can serve two functions — it can serve as a family room during the day, and turned into a guest room at night. Mumbai has one of the lowest ratios of open spaces in the world. In such cases, designers can play a critical role in providing relaxing spaces in the home itself, since people spend a lot of time indoors. This can be done in several ways — by incorporating terrace gardens, green patches and large windows or by making sure that the interiors connect with nature in a creative way. n What design trends do you foresee
n You have a lot of experience in design.
What made you choose this as your profession? Design is all around us. Even if we don’t design it, we experience it without realising it. That is the beauty of design — it speaks to you subconsciously. If a design has to be explained heavily, then perhaps it’s not a great design! This is what drove me into the field of design. Design is multi-dimensional and experiential, and designers like us thrive on these aspects — to design spaces that subtly fulfill human needs. I think the role of designers becomes much more critical because they are in charge of every aspect. That was a challenge for me and it led me to take up this profession.
becoming popular in the coming year? I see a great shift in people’s perception towards design, from traditional heavy ornamentation to clean, functional spaces. With that, we will see more people picking modern, contemporary ideas, which speak of their decluttered and minimalistic approach. Since India is a warm country, we will continue to see splashes of colour playing an important role in interior spaces, and for good reason. But, it is this shift from ornate to functional, elegant and modern design that will dominate the design space. n Whether it’s the technology of Apple’s iOS
and Google’s material design for Android or new-age homes with functional
furniture, do you believe that we’re moving more towards simple, functional designs that make life easier instead of just beautiful? Absolutely! This is primarily true for the younger generation, who is technology savvy and always on the move. They demand designs that declutter their living space and minds, and they like to keep things minimal, especially with the type of décor they want in their homes. And, to quote Steve Jobs, “It takes a lot of hard work to make something simple, to truly understand the underlying challenges and come up with elegant solutions.” Our current generation is inspired by leaders such as Steve Jobs and Tim Brown, and so, is moving towards a similar design philosophy. n What traditional Indian design elements
do you think are best suited for the modern world? Traditional Indian homes were built with great scientific knowledge. They had a deep understanding the science of materials, wind directions and the path of the sun, resulting in climaticallyresponsive designs. I think we can focus on the same scientific knowledge and apply it to our current design trends. For example, Indians always integrated copper as durable, disinfectant material in their everyday lives, and the west is only just discovering the benefits of the metal. So, things like these, which have slipped out of our memory, are going to re-emerge. Many more elements, such as the Indian penchant for bright colours and our love of great woodwork, will continue to dominate the design space. n Where do you see LivSpace.com in the
next few years? Our vision is to make homes beautiful everywhere. In the next few years, we aspire to turn LivSpace.com into a leading online home design brand across the world. We want to be the first choice for people — on the web, on phones and on tablets — as they discover looks, personalise them and get the best quality products, accessories and services for their home. We also want to revolutionise the way in which designers create designrelated content and create tools for them that will help them design, stay informed and serve their clients a hundred times better than what’s possible today.

SHruti SancHeti Tassels can add a great deal to an outfit. They enhance your look and give it a finished, stylish appearance. These days, tassels are very popular and aren’t limited to Indian or Indo-western styles, but are used globally as a finishing element. Ideally, they are used for drawstrings and at the edges of scarves, stoles, dupattas and sarees. They can be used in several different ways, and are often seen on dresses, kaftans and even shirts. They should be used judiciously to add value to an outfit — a simple skirt or ghagra with beautiful tassels will look great. A kaftan with two tassels on the drawstring looks edgy and scarves with tassels add an elegant, regal touch to your outfit.

We think that after much trial and error, this is the look that set Mallika on our fashion watch. The gorgeous metallic blue gown complemented her skin tone, the fit accentuated her curves and while mech necklines are usually awfully apparent, this is barely noticeable, which makes it an almost strapless look we love! Her hair is so-so, but the gown makes up for it.
We haven’t been as ecstatic about Sonam’s looks at Cannes this year, but this cobalt gown is definitely the best of the lot. While we hate the big flounce in the front, the colour suits her perfectly, her hair is gorgeous, those drop earrings add much needed glam and her makeup is spot on.
SonaM KaPoor
MalliKa SHeraWat
teena aHuja KaPoor The tassel trend has been spotted all over the runway this season and the best part is that you can choose an accessory with tassels or just turn it into one. If you like to keep things simple, you can pick shoes, belts or a bag with tassels. But, if you’re more of a flirty, vivacious person, you can pick a fun skirt or a well-fitted vest with tassels on it. There is something very lively about the way you move when you’re wearing tassels. If you’re teaming up an accessory with tassels, keep the look minimal by wearing a pair of well-fitted bottoms with a shirt or a dress. If you’ve got a bolder style, don a fun tassel skirt with a simple top and strap-on heels or a pair of solidcoloured sneakers.
Styling taSSelS The great thing about the tassels is that they work on practically anything. It helps that they come in different sizes, and so they fit well with a range of clothing and accessories. n You can add tiny tassels to strappy shoes to subtly rock the trend. n Bags accented with tassels aren’t exactly new, but you can still add a cute touch to your handbag by jumping on to this trend. n Picking belts with tassels at the ends is a great way to spruce up your spring wardrobe. The simple rope tassel belt goes a long way when it comes to styling your look. n You can even include tassels in your jewelery, whether it’s in your earrings or on a necklace. n Take a cue from designer Swapnil Shinde, who tells us,“The best way to style this trend is to keep everything else minimal as tassels make for a strong statement. Avoid wearing tassels and fringe dresses during the day — this trend is more suited to evening wear.

Finally, an updo! We’re glad Michelle was rocking something different, but we’re not quite sure about that dress. It looks great on her, but the entire peekaboo sheer trend is a little done and dusted, so there’s no real oomph left in the style. We’ll give her extra points for looking drop dead gorgeous in it though!

aiSHWarya rai BacHcHan
Aishwarya may have made the best choices (well, almost) when it comes to her Cannes wardrobe this year, but this is the dress we’re most fond of. The slinky Elie Saab creation and pretty, understated makeup (compared with otherwise very dark styles through the festival) and accessories won us over. However, we wish she had opted for a different hairstyle, the side swept waves were overdone this year.
«
Katrina Kaif
Elie Saab was the designer of the moment at Cannes, so it’s no surprise Katrina jumped on the bandwagon too. Nothing stands out about this gown but it fits Katrina like a glove! She looks gorgeous, especially with her slicked back hair and dark lip. The slim belt above her waist adds a little fun to an otherwise old-school gown.

If you need to, you can say that you have a meeting and need to eat quickly or simply that you want to catch up on some reading. However, she also tells us that you should make sure to clean your desk when you’re done eating. She adds, “If your workspace is surrounded by several other desks in a closed, centrally air-conditioned space, try to avoid eating at your desk, as your food may leave behind unpleasant odours. If you must, make sure that the area is adequately aired after you’re done eating.” Another point to remember is not to throw leftovers in the bin by your desk — it will stink. Get it cleared on a regular basis or use the dustbin in the pantry.
unch is a well-deserved break in the middle of a busy work day for most of us. It’s that time of day when you forget about all your pending deadlines and spend a little time indulging in idle chatter, reading a book or simply browsing through social media feeds. But, while your boss may not care much about what you do during your lunch hour, you can be certain that your every move affects how your colleagues perceive you. If you don’t want to be the sort of girl people conveniently forget to invite to lunch at a restaurant close by, you need to follow these rules. Suhasini Ahluwalia Mehta, a personal image coach and corporate trainer, helps us out with a few great tips.
ConverSatIonal mIShaPS When it comes to talking with your colleagues at lunch, it is important to remember that you’re doing it to pass the time and take a break from work. You’re not in the parliament or in the middle of a television debate, discussing matters of national importance. Getting into arguments with your colleagues over subjects such as politics and religion is only going to lead to simmering tension. Leave those topics for a drunken discussion with your friends or for a spirited blog post. Suhasini recommends that you talk about hobbies, films, a good article that you may have come across, sports (but don’t get too competitive!) or an interesting book you read.
InCludIng everyone Remember to include everyone in your conversation — avoid talking to a friend about the fantastic deal you came across when you were browsing for dresses, unless you think that everyone at your lunch table will be interested in the topic. dear aarti, In such situations, your initial approach should be to request your noisy neighbours duo to keep it down during work hours. The phrasing you use should be polite and shouldn’t elicit a defensive or aggressive response. You could say something like — “Could you please talk quietly? It distracts me and I find it difficult to concentrate.” Most people respond well to polite requests, but if that doesn’t work, complaining to your boss would be the only other option. But, this could create conflict in the workplace, so try and resolve this as peacefully as you can.

Yes, lunch is a relaxing time, which allows you to take a break from work. But you’re still a professional, and you need to behave like one. Suhasini tells us that talking about your personal problems is a strict no-no. She explains, “Don’t cultivate the habit of making fun of your in-laws or complaining about your personal life in front of your colleagues. Also, respect other people’s food preferences and avoid cracking jokes about being vegetarian.” She also adds that you should refrain from criticising other people’s food — it’s good etiquette to compliment them but very bad manners to do the opposite. If you don’t like a particular food item, keep it to yourself and politely refuse it the next time it is passed around. If someone refuses your food (Suhasini tells us that it is good manners to offer your food to your colleagues at least once), don’t insist that they take a bite or feel offended. There’s another, lighter point that Suhasini tells us about, as she signs off. She says, “If your office has arranged a lunch buffet, don’t criticise the food!” We wholeheartedly agree! Your office is paying for your lunch — most of us don’t get that!

mini-mes! How often have you stood in front of the mirror, brushing your hair while your toddler stared up at your adoringly and mimicked the action with hers own? Daughters mimic what their mothers do, especially during their formative years! Yamini Walia & Sara Shah tell you how to instil good values and a healthy self-image
B
eing a mother is clearly the world’s toughest job — you want to raise your children so that they are proud of who they are, but never vain and pompous. Women can be really insecure about the way they look because of our society’s definition of the perfect woman — beautiful, delicate and demure. However, if you’re walking around the house criticising yourself with your toddler in tow, you may want to stop and think a little! As a mother, it’s your responsibility to make sure that your daughter grows into a strong, independent woman. We bring you a few tips to remember when you’re raising a daughter.
CritiCising yoursElf Argh... I look shabby! My hair is so frizzy! — These statements reveal your insecurities about how you look. Since your daughter is a reflection of you, she’s bound to take on your insecurities. You need to help her cultivate a healthy self-image, which will be possible only if you’re confident about yourself in the first place. Your daughter sees in you a beautiful woman — so, let that image stay!
wEigh yoursElf Obsessively checking your weight in front of your daughter will do more harm than good. You may not be happy with your weight, but whining about it to your daughter is not the solution. After all, you want your child to have a positive outlook towards food and her weight, regardless of her body shape. She needs to believe that she is perfect on the inside as well as outside.
put othEr womEn down Putting other women down is a strict no-no. One of the best habits you can cultivate in your daughter is that of compassion towards people, especially towards other women. In a world where women have been through so much, the best support they can receive is >> Instead of complaining about your weight, try to perform some healthy exercises in front of your daughter
that from each other. Avoid shaming other women, especially when your daughter is around. Not only will she have an adverse opinion of women, she will also consider it normal to ridicule other people and will have a hard time respecting them.
no rEality tV, plEasE! Most TV shows emphasise how a person looks — whether it’s Keeping it up with the Kardarshians or Bachelorette! While, these shows may be fun to watch after a stressful day at work, they won’t leave a good impression on your daughter — they’re superficial and will not benefit your child in any way. So, put that remote down!

gossip We all know that gossiping is bad, but we do it anyway. Whether it is intentional or unintentional, avoid gossiping in front of your daughter. Not only will she end up cultivating the habit of gossiping, she can misunderstand what’s being said or may even think that it is okay to dish out personal information about others. If you want to set a good example for your daughter, avoid gossiping — save it for your next kitty party instead.
VEnting about your husband Problems with your partner are part and parcel of married life and there will be times when the presence of your spouse may just be a little overwhelming for you. While it is never wise to fight in front of your children, you should also avoid venting to your daughter. We say this because women tend to be closer to their daughters and at some point, you may find yourself confiding in them. This will put her in an awkward position and she may end up losing respect for her father, or will just feel uncomfortable at home.
ExpErts spEak “Mothers play a major role in the development of their daughter’s self-image. Avoid making discriminatory remarks and understand the need for a more liberal approach towards matters of life. Avoid dismissing your daughter’s interest in a particular activity as something that she should not take up just because she is a girl. Maintain equality to help her grow.” — Dr Ashish Deshpande, psychologist and founder of Dr. Deshpande Clinic

Think you can fix our readers’ complicated problems? Read on... We are a gang of four very close friends. But, because of work and well.... “LIFE!” we rarely get to hang out together as much as we used to, or would like to But, we always manage to find time about twice a month, at the very least, for... you guessed it!
LADIES NIGHT!!
We all love fashion! But certain fashion trends are so edgy that your man may not appreciate them as much as you do! Yamini Walia tells you about a few
P
eplums, maxis and wedge sneakers — most women love these trends. But, have you ever wondered what your partner thinks of them? While he may love you in stilettos or in a little black dress, bolder, quirkier trends are not every man’s cup of tea! Here, we tell you about a few fashion trends that your man probably isn’t as impressed by as you are.
But, lately, it’s been... Me, Mara and Tisca just giggling and gassing and catching up... And then he was like... Are you sure it’s a potato...
PePluMs We love how peplums highlight the smallest part of our waist! Wear them to a party or at work, and they will add a classy touch to your look. But, men don’t always agree. The style is quite offbeat, so don’t be surprised if he thinks that the ruffled peplum looks silly or childish and in most cases, could be too similar to maternity wear.
While Renu sits, not engaging with us and on her phone...
HareM PanTs We know these are super comfy, especially in warm weather when you’re looking to wear something loose. However, it’s probably going to remind him of Aladdin!
roMPers Rompers are super comfortable and are a great option when you’re going shopping or just hanging out with your girlfriends. These are the perfect replacement for a sundress because you don’t have to worry about the flow-y skirt. But, men can’t seem to wrap their head around this trend that is a cross between overalls and a dress. Several men think of it as an outfit that is meant for a baby!
aCryliC nails Acrylic nails are fun, and let you pick from several adorable designs. Also, you don’t have to go through the hassle of growing long nails, which tend to be brittle and you’re even saved from the trouble of chipping nail polish.
>> Your man may not love your acrylic nails as much as you do! However, for your man, going through the trouble of sticking nails over nails is unfathomable. After all, maintaining your own natural ones can be hard enough.
sTiCky liPs Ladies, while you may love your fuschia lipgloss, the man in your life won’t appreciate it and we understand why! However smashing you look, it’s going to get on your food, drinks...! If you’re
sharing a meal with your man or are in the mood for a little intimacy, pick nontransferrable lipstick instead!
reTro bikinis These bikinis are reminiscent of the ’40s because of the fun designs and highwaisted bottoms. These offer tummy control, which is why women absolutely love them! They’re not in the least bit attractive though!
« Dear grace, i have a problem... Dear Grace, I’ve been in a relationship for a little over two years. While my boyfriend wasn’t like this in the beginning, he now criticises me often. I didn’t notice when he began doing this, but looking back, the criticism started slowly and kept building up. He picks on me for the smallest things, and now it’s affecting my self-esteem. How do I make him stop? — Tanvi Chaudhary, Mulund
Dear Tanvi, There are several reasons why this could be happening. For one, he may not realise how his criticism hurts your feelings. There’s also the possibility that he has very high expectations of you, or his

criticism may stem from the fact that he’s insecure about the relationship and he may not be good at communicating what he feels. Also, people who pick on their partners are often impulsive, and don’t stop to think about how thier statements will affect others. Try getting to the bottom of his bullying behaviour. Ask him to pause, take a breath and think about why he’s saying things that hurt you. If he acknowledges his behaviour and is willing to change, practise this technique (of stopping to think why he behaves like this) to make it a habit. If not, you’re going to have to ask yourself how much more you can put up with before calling off your relationship.
“We all are dating! And of course sometimes go out with our guys too... But, just hanging with us girls we get to talk. And with Sameer around, it’s not the same. And it’s always! Like hanging out only with us is a waste of her night or something? Help?” Bhumika a) Just tell her! Tell her that you’ll want to catch up with her. Reassure her that you’ll like Sameer, but tell her ‘ladies’ means ONLY girls. b) It sounds like Sameer may be a little too possessive. Have a chat with Renu and ask her if everything is okay. c) They sound like they are completely in love! Why not try doing a half and half sometimes? That is girls-only drinks for a couple of hours and all your partners joining you’ll later for dinner? LAST WEEK: Jacky should pick option B: Every time she criticises her nose, kiss it and apologize to it on behalf of your girlfriend. Something like “It’s okay nose, I love you... She’s just an old meanie.” So, every time she starts feeling bad, she laughs instead.

entiment towards the country's current business environment and expectations for future have dipped to pre-Modi government levels, a Deutsche Borse survey, said yesterday. The MNI India Business Sentiment Indicator, a gauge of the current sentiment among BSE listed companies, fell 2.5% to 62.3 in May, from 63.9 in April. "The May report confirms that the trend in business activity is down, with the overall sentiment, output and orders all continuing to fall from the Q4 peak," Chief Economist of MNI Indicators Philip Uglow said. This is the lowest level for the index since April 2014, which coupled with the decline in output and orders point to a reduction in business activity. "Production declined to a near 2year low in May and evidence from
the survey suggested that Narendra Modi's ambitious 'Make in India' project is failing to get off the ground," the report said. Companies, according to the report, saw a significant weakening in both domestic and export orders. The index for new orders fell sharply to 57.1 in May 2015, while export orders shrank to 53.6, the weakest since June 2013. The survey said the overall sentiment reacted positively to the two rate cuts this year by RBI although their impact remains limited. The central bank had lowered its policy rate twice so far in 2015 but maintained a status quo in its last policy review on April 7. The next review meet is scheduled on June 2, although the previous two cuts took place outside the policy cycle. MNI Indicators, part of the Deutsche Borse Group, offers macroeconomic data and insights into businesses and investment community.

In the future we look forward to building great business partnerships and being a part of the Indian growth story, he said. If this wasn’t inspiring enough, now imagine him singing a Bhagat Singh song in a narrative style and talking about patriotism. “I was taken aback by the dedication and devotion he has for his country. Such attitude and never say die spirit is rare to find. This sure is enough to give me jitters. I had goose bumps and I could feel my hair rising. What voice ! What confidence ! What a fighter and what an inspiration. He is a true Bhagat Singh follower and a patriot and fighter like him. I salute this young soldier who wants to go on the border and fight for his country. IN THE SPACE OF THE SPIRIT
QUESTIONER: Maharaj, you are sitting in front of me and I am here at your feet. What is the basic difference between us? MAHARAJ: There is no basic difference.
Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj
Q: Still there must be some real difference, I come to you, you do not come to me. M: Because you imagine differences, you go here and there in search of 'superior' people.
Q: You too are a superior person. You claim to know the real, while I do not. M: Did I ever tell you that you do not know and therefore, you are inferior? Let those who invented such distinctions prove them. I do not claim to know what you do not. In fact, I know much less than you do.
Q: Your words are wise, your behaviour noble, your grace all-powerful. M: I know nothing about it all and see no difference between you and me. My life is a succession of events, just like yours. Only I am detached and see the passing show as a passing show, while you stick to things and move along with them. Q: What made you so dispassionate? M: Nothing in particular. It so happened that I trusted my Guru. He told me I am nothing but my self and I believed him. Trusting him, I behaved accordingly and ceased caring for what was not me, nor mine. Q: Why were you lucky to trust your teacher fully, while our trust is nominal and verbal? M: Who can say? It happened so. Things happen without cause and reason and, after all, what does it matter, who is who? Your high opinion of me is your opinion only. Any moment you may change it. Why attach importance to

being - we differ only in appearance. We discover it by being earnest, by searching, enquiring, questioning daily and hourly, by giving one's life to this discovery.
Real World is Beyond the Mind opinions, even your own?
Q: Still, you are different. Your mind seems to be always quiet and happy. And miracles happen round you. M: I know nothing about miracles, and I wonder whether nature admits exceptions to her laws, unless we agree that everything is a miracle. As to my mind, there is no such thing. There is consciousness in which everything happens. It is quite obvious and within the experience of everybody. You just do not look carefully enough. Look well, and see what I see.
Q: What do you see? M: I see what you too could see, here and now, but for the wrong focus of your attention. You give no attention to your self. Your mind is all with things, people and ideas, never with your self. Bring your self into focus, become aware of your own existence. See how you function, watch the motives and the results of your actions. Study the prison you have built around yourself, by
hen asked about the date of his birth die Master replied blandly that he was never born! Writing a biographical note on Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj is a frustrating and unrewarding task. For, not only the exact date of his birth is unknown, but no verified facts concerning the early years of his life are available. However, some of his elderly relatives and friends say that he was born in the month of March 1897 on a full moon day, which coincide^ with the festival of Hanuman Jayanti, when Hindus pay their homage to Hanuman, also named Maruti, the monkey-god of Ramayana fame. And to associate his birth with this auspicious day his parents named him Maruti. Available information about his boyhood and early youth is patchy and disconnected. We learn that his father, Shivrampant, was a poor man, who worked for some time as a domestic servant in Bombay and, later, eked out his livelihood as a petty farmer at Kandalgaon, a small village in the back woods of Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. Maruti grew up almost without education. As a boy he assisted his father in such labours as lay within his power - tended cattle, drove oxen, worked in the fields and ran errands. His pleasures were simple, as his labours, but he was gifted with an inquisitive
inadvertence. By knowing what you are not, you come to know yourself. The way back to your self is through refusal and rejection. One thing is certain: the real is not imaginary, it is not a product of the mind. Even the sense 'I am' is not continuous, though it is a useful pointer; it shows where to seek, but not what to seek. Just have a good look at it. Once you are convinced that you cannot say truthfully about your self anything except 'I am', and that nothing that can be pointed at, can be your self, the need for the 'I am' is over you are no longer intent on verbalizing what you are. All you need is to get rid of the tendency to define your self. All definitions apply to your body only and to its expressions. Once this obsession with the body goes, you will revert to your natural state, spontaneously and effortlessly. The only difference between us is that I am aware of my natural state, while you are bemused. Just like gold made into ornaments has no advantage over gold dust, except when the mind makes it so, so are we one in
Q: On several occasions the question has been raised as to whether the universe is subject to the law of causation, or does it exist and function outside the law? You seem to hold the view that it is uncaused, that everything, however small, is uncaused, arising and disappearing for no known reason whatsoever. M: Causation means succession in time of events in space, the space being physical or mental. Time, space, causation are mental categories, arising and subsiding with the mind.
Q: As long as the mind operates, causation is a valid law. M: Like everything mental, the so-called law of causation contradicts itself. No thing in existence has a particular cause; the entire universe contributes to the existence of even the smallest thing; nothing could be as it is without the universe being what it is. When the source and ground of everything is the only cause of everything, to speak of causality as a

mind, bubbling over with questions of all sorts. Childhood, youth, marriage, progeny - Maruti lived the usual humdrum and eventless life of a common man till his middle age, with no inkling at all of the sainthood that was to follow. Among his friends during this period was one Yashwantrao Baagkar, who was a devotee of Sri Siddharameshwar Maharaj, a spiritual teacher of the Navanath Sampradaya,* a sect of Hinduism. One evening Baagkar took Maruti to his Guru and that evening proved to be the turning point in his life. The Guru gave him a mantra and instructions in meditation. Early in his practice he started having visions and occasionally even fell into trances. Something exploded within him, as it were, giving birth to a cosmic consciousness, a sense of eternal life. The identity of Maruti, the petty shopkeeper, dissolved and the illuminating personality Sri Nisargadatta emerged. Most people live in the world of self-consciousness and do not have the desire or power to leave it. They exist only for themselves; all their effort is directed towards achievement of
universal law is wrong. The universe is not bound by its content, because its potentialities are infinite; besides it is a manifestation, or expression of a principle fundamentally and totally free.
Q: Yes, one can see that ultimately to speak of one thing being the only cause of another thing is altogether wrong. Yet, in actual life we invariably initiate action with a view to a result. M: Yes, there is a lot of such activity going on, because of ignorance. Would people know that nothing can happen unless the entire universe makes it happen, they would but achieve much more with less expenditure of energy.
Q: If everything is an expression of the totality of causes, how can we talk of a purposeful action towards an achievement? M: The very urge to achieve is also an expression of the total universe. It merely shows that the energy potential has risen at a particular point. It is the illusion of time that makes you talk of causality. When the past and the future are seen in the timeless 'now', as parts of a common pattern, the idea of cause-effect loses its validity and creative freedom takes its place. Q: Yet, I cannot see how anything can come to be without a cause. M: When I say a thing is without a cause, I mean it can be without a particular cause. Your own mother was not needed to give you birth; you could have been born from some other woman. But you could not have been born without the sun and the earth. Even these could not have caused your birth without the most important factor: your own desire to be born. It is desire that gives birth, that gives name and form. The desirable is imagined and wanted and manifests itself as

something tangible or conceivable. Thus is created the world in which we live, our personal world. The real world is beyond the mind's ken; we see it through the net of our desires, divided into pleasure and pain, right and wrong, inner and outer. To see the universe as it is, you must step beyond the net. It is not hard to do so, for the net is full of holes. Q: What do you mean by holes? And how to find them? M: Look at the net and its many contradictions. You do and undo at every step. You want peace, love, happiness and work hard to create pain, hatred and war. You want longevity and overeat, you want friendship and exploit. See your net as made of such contradictions and remove them - your very seeing them will make them go.
Q: Since my seeing the contradiction makes it go, is there no causal link between my seeing and its going? M: Causality/even as a concept, does not apply to chaos. Q: To what extent is desire a causal factor? M: One of the many. For everything there are innumerable causal factors. But the source of all that is, is the Infinite Possibility, the Supreme Reality, which is in you and which throws its power and light and love on every experience. But, this source is not a cause and no cause is a source. Because of that, I say everything is uncaused. You may try to trace how a thing happens, but you cannot find out why a thing 'is' as it is. A thing is as it is, because the universe is as it is.

self-satisfaction and self-glorification. There are, however, seers, teachers and revealers who, while apparently living in the same world, live simultaneously in another world also - the world of cosmic consciousness, effulgent with infinite knowledge. After his illuminating experience Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj started living such a dual life. He conducted his shop, but ceased to be a profit-minded merchant. Later, abandoning his family and business he became a mendicant, a pilgrim over the vastness and variety of the Indian religious scene. He walked barefooted on his way to the Himalayas where he planned to pass the rest of his years in quest of an eternal life. But he soon retraced his steps and came back home comprehending the futility of such a quest. Eternal life, he perceived, was not to be sought for; he already had it. Having gone beyond the I-am-the-body idea, he had acquired a mental state so joyful, peaceful and glorious that everything appeared to be worthless compared to it. He had attained self-realization. Uneducated though the Master is, his conversation is enlightened to a great degree. Any attempt to write a biographical note on such a man is frivolous and futile. For he is not a man with a past or future; he is the living present - eternal and immutable. He is the self that has become all things.

Interesting facts surface in Malik leads Pakistan to 41-run win over Zimbabwe Balbir Sr's biography in Punjabi L

handigarh: Interesting facts have come to light in a soon-to-be-released Punjabi biography of hockey legend Balbir Singh Sr with the writer claiming to have traced the nonagenarian's lineage to famous Sikh warrior Baba Bidhi Chand. The biography of the 91year-old iconic centre forward has been written in Punjabi by Toronto-based Principal Sarwan Singh and is likely to be released by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal soon. According to Balbir Singh Sr's daughter, Sushbir Bhomia, the book is very well researched. "An interesting fact which has come to light is that the writer has traced my father's lineage to famous Sikh warrior Baba Bidhi Chand ji, who served the sixth Sikh Guru Hargobind ji," she told PTI here. Baba Bidhi Chand was an excellent horse rider and even Balbir Sr has told his biographer, who has 37 books
on different subjects to his credit, that horse riding came naturally to him. "The writer mentions in the book that like Baba Bidhi Chand ji proved his mettle as a warrior, Balbir Sr showed that strength on the hockey ground," she said. Balbir Sr, who served Punjab Police force before finally retiring as Director of Punjab's Sports Department in 1982, won gold medals at the 1948 (London), 1952 (Helsinki) and 1956 (Melbourne) Olympics. His 1952 record of most goals (five) in an Olympic final still stands and he also figures in the list of 16 iconic Olympians of all-time. The writer mentions that he started to write the book in 2013 when the hockey legend's namesake approached him with the Sr's photo telling him that it had been mistakenly posted at his Dosanjh village address in Jalandhar.
ahore: Shoaib Malik hit his first century in six years to help Pakistan outbat Zimbabwe in the first day-night international by 41 runs in Lahore, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Malik, playing his first onedayer after two years, notched up a 76-ball 112 with 12 fours and two sixes to steer Pakistan to 375-3 -- their highest against Zimbabwe -before restricting the tourists to 334-5 in 50 overs at Gaddafi Stadium last night. Zimbabwe tried their valiant best with skipper Elton Chigumbura hitting a rapid 95-ball 117 but the mounting asking rate proved too much in the end. Chigumbura hit 10 boundaries and four sixes in his maiden one-day hundred as Zimbabwe also improved on their previous highest total against Pakistan, beating 2959 in Bulawayo in 2002. Chigumbura added 124 for the third wicket with Hamilton Masakadza (73) and another 74 for the fourth with
their previous best total against Zimbabwe of 349 at Jamaica in 2007. Malik's hundred -- his first in 31 innings and since September 2009 -came off 70 balls as Pakistan added 112 in the last 10 overs. Malik, 33, was dismissed off the last delivery, caught in the covers off Tinashe Panyangara. Malik had been part of a 201-run stand with Haris Sohail (89 not out), a new record for the third wicket against Zimbabwe beating the 145 runs which Javed Miandad and Amir Sohail put on at Pakistan's Shoaib Malik hits boundary as Zimbabwe's Christopher Mpofu Hobart in 1992. Sri Lanka sacks officials over sex scandal C
olombo: Sri Lankan cricket's governing body on Wednesday announced the sacking of three officials after allegations that members of the women's national team were asked to perform sexual favours to keep their places. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said all three officials were shown the door at the end of their contracts last month after an internal inquiry found two of them guilty of sexual harassment and a third of improper conduct. The board said in a statement that "there was no evidence of any physical intimacy" by any of the three men, none of whom have been named. But the investigation had nevertheless determined that "there have been a few incidents of sexual harassment which were committed by two male officials" and that the third was guilty of "improper conduct... Which did not amount to sexual harass-
ment," the SLC added. Sri Lanka's sports ministry said at the weekend that criminal prosecutions would follow after its own inquiry had found two team managers demanded sexual favours from team members. Under Sri Lankan law, anyone found guilty of sexual harassment can face up to five years in prison plus an unspecified fine. The board said both its own report and the separate inquiry by the sports ministry had highlighted the "unsatisfactory situation" involving the women's team where there was "favouritism and bias". "Both reports have commented adversely on the failure to ensure that a female manager handles the women's cricket team," SLC said, adding that they will take appropriate action to "rectify" management issues. Despite the sports ministry's weekend announcement, no charges have been brought against any official so far.

Russia's Maria Sharapova returns the ball to compatriot Vitalia Diatchenko during their second round match of the French Open tennis tournament at the Roland Garros stadium, Wednesday in Paris. Sharapova won 6-3, 6-1.
P
ARIS: If Maria Sharapova was still suffering from a cold, it sure didn't show on center court as the defending champion easily advanced to the third round of the French Open on Wednesday. Sharapova saved four of the five break points she faced against her Fed Cup teammate and limited her mistakes to eight unforced errors in a 6-3, 6-1 win over Vitalia Diatchenko. The second-seeded Sharapova was booed Monday after she had skipped the oncourt postmatch interview, citing her illness as the reason. She is trying to become the first woman to successfully defend her crown at the clay-court tournament since Justine Henin in 2007. The victory set up a third-
round meeting with 2010 runner-up Samantha Stosur, who advanced with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Amandine Hesse of France. Said Sharapova of Stosur, “There are a lot of untraditional things she does but I enjoy that challenge." Stosur, the 2011 US Open champion, is enjoying a good spell of form, having won her first title this year in Strasbourg last week. The 26th seed finished last season outside the top 20 for the first time since 2008. She has won just two of 16 previous meetings with Sharapova, who ousted Stosur in the fourth round of the French Open last year. “She fights from the first point to the last point. Doesn't give much away, and, you
know, when her back is against the wall she keeps swinging and going forward," Stosur said. "She can make that ball on the line and, then, all of a sudden get herself back into it. She's one of those players that you have to go at the whole time and not let up.” Trailing 5-0 in the second set, Hesse, playing in front of her home crowd, looked up to the sky and sighed in relief as her forehand volley landed on the line, out of Stosur's reach, to spare the wild-card entry the humiliation of bowing out without winning a single game. strava (Czech Republic): Six-time Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt registered a facile win in his first race of the year in Europe, but the Jamaican failed to break 20 seconds in the 200m at the Golden Spike meet in Ostrava. In wet conditions, Bolt clocked 20.13 seconds, well outside his 19.19 seconds world record mark to beat American Isiah Young on Tuesday, reports bbc.com. "You can't be satisfied if I don't break 20 seconds," the 28-year-old, who is building up to the World Championships in August, said.
He won 100m, 200m and sprint relay gold at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow. "I just need to try to get myself into running shape. I really wanted to break 20 seconds but the
conditions didn't allow. And I'm coming back from injuries, so it's going to take time," Bolt said. Asafa Powell took the 100m in 10.04 seconds. The 32-year-old former world record holder was also well off his best pace, having clocked 9.84 seconds at the Jamaica International Invitational in Kingston this month. His compatriot Bolt improved on his season's best of 20.20 seconds for the 200m, set in April in Jamaica, but conceded he was well off where he will need to be by summer.
few lapses in concentration to ease into the third round of the French Open with a 6-2 76(1) 6-3 win against Spain's Marcel Granollers on Wednesday. The 17-times grand slam champion from Switzerland, who faces either Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus or Bosnian Damir Dzumhur, cantered through the opening set but then let his guard down. The second seed dropped serve in the second and third sets, but he had too much firepower for the world number 57 to handle, breaking straight back both times. Federer, who has not won a major since Wimbledon in 2012, ended the contest on his first match point when Granollers returned a serve into the net.

Sharapova says Fed Cup should change dates
P
aris: Defending French Open champion Maria Sharapova called for a change in schedule for the Fed Cup on Wednesday, saying playing ties after grand slam tournaments was "pointless". The Russian showed no ill-effects from a cold as she swept past fellow Russian Fed Cup team member Vitalia Diatchenko 6-3 6-1 on Court Philippe Chatrier to reach the third round. She will face tough Australian Samantha Stosur next and the world number two said the next day and a half would all be about maintenance and recovery as she tries to plot her way to a third French Open title in four years. Sharapova skipped Russia's Fed Cup semi-final against Germany last month -- a decision that proved wise as she enjoyed a strong run in Madrid where she reached the semi-finals and in Rome where she claimed the title. She is committed to the Fed Cup team, however, and played in the quarter-final against Poland shortly after reaching the Australian Open final. The 28-year-old said it can be a hassle though. "It's more the timing of the events that are just really unfortunate," she told reporters. "I have been very vocal about it. I don't think anyone's that's making the Fed Cup schedule is thinking about the players that go far in grand slams. "They don't understand or appreciate how much mental and physical strength it takes to get to that. "To schedule a Fed Cup match right after a grand slam; it's just pointless, in my opinion.

"I had an amazing time playing this year, and I want to play in the future, but the schedule just does not give me any chance to do so. As much as I want to be part of it, it's just -- it's really a hassle." She even suggested the Fed Cup should not be held every year. "I think it would be much more successful if it actually had a legitimate schedule and maybe not every single year." There was only a scattering of fans inside the stadium as Sharapova took to the court on Wednesday, but after getting into her stride she overpowered the 91st-ranked Diatchenko. Stosur will be a tougher proposition though -- having stretched Sharapova to three sets in the fourth round last year. "She's always a tough opponent. She enjoys playing on clay, benefits a lot from this surface," she said of the 2010 runner-up. "But I have a pretty good record against her."
Barca forward Suarez back in training before Cup final M ADRID: Barcelona forward Luis Suarez has returned to training with his team mates, suggesting he will be able to play a part in Saturday's King's Cup final against Athletic Bilbao after two weeks out with a hamstring problem. The Uruguay international sustained the injury in the Champions League semifinal, second leg at Bayern Munich and missed Barca's final two La Liga games, including the 1-0 win at Atletico Madrid when they secured a fifth title in seven years. "All the available players from the first team trained," Barca said on their website on Wednesday. "Luis Suarez worked with them without yet being given the medical all clear."

The Catalan giants are the only Spanish club to have won the treble, achieving the feat under Pep Guardiola in 2008-09. Suarez had a slow start at Barca after his ban for biting an opponent at the World Cup expired at the end of October but has been in impressive form since the turn of the year. "Soccer officials are charged with conspiring to solicit and receive well over USD150 million in bribes and kickbacks in exchange for their official support of the sports marketing executives who agreed to make the unlawful payments," federal prosecutors alleged.
W
ashington: Following a probe on allegations of conspiracy and corruption, American federal prosecutors have charged 14 individuals including highranking officials of FIFA, the world governing body of football. Seven of these have been arrested in Zurich, officials here and in Switzerland announced, posing a question mark on the decision-making process of football's apex governing body. Those charged in the indictment unsealed in a New York court today include highranking officials of the Federation Internationale de Football Association, the organisation responsible for the regulation and promotion of soccer worldwide, as well as leading officials of other soccer governing bodies that operate under the FIFA umbrella. Jeffrey Webb and Jack Warner – the current and former presidents of CONCACAF, the continental confederation under FIFA headquartered in the United States – are among the soccer officials charged with racketeering and bribery offences. Others include US and South American sports marketing executives who are alleged to have systematically paid and agreed to pay well over 150 million US Dollars in bribes and kickbacks to obtain lucrative media and marketing rights to international soccer tournaments. At the request of the US, Swiss authorities in Zurich Wednesday morning arrested seven of the defendants charged in the indictment -Jeffrey Webb, Eduardo Li, Julio Rocha, Costas Takkas, Eugenio Figueredo, Rafael Esquivel and Jose Maria Marin. Also this morning, a search warrant is being executed at CONCACAF headquarters in Miami, Florida. The guilty pleas of the four
individual and two corporate defendants that were also unsealed today include the guilty pleas of Charles Blazer, the long-serving former general secretary of CONCACAF and former US representative on the FIFA executive committee; Jose Hawilla, the owner and founder of the Traffic Group, a multinational sports marketing conglomerate headquartered in Brazil; and two of Hawilla's companies, Traffic Sports International Inc., which is based in Florida. "The indictment alleges corruption that is rampant, systemic, and deep-rooted both abroad and here in the United States," said US Attorney General Loretta Lynch. "It has profoundly harmed a multitude of victims, from the youth leagues and developing countries that should benefit from the revenue generated by the commercial rights these organisations hold, to the fans at home and throughout the world whose support for the game makes those rights valuable," she added. The indictment alleges that, since 1991 and the present, the defendants and their coconspirators corrupted the enterprise by engaging in various criminal activities, including fraud, bribery and money laundering. Two generations of soccer officials abused their positions of trust for personal gain, frequently through an alliance with unscrupulous sports marketing executives who shut out competitors and kept highly lucrative contracts for
Venerated and vilified, Blatter soldiers on as FIFA boss
Zurich: Sepp Blatter goes into one of the toughest days of his 40 years at football's governing body revered by some as the beautiful game's 'Jesus' and scorned by others as a rogue clinging to power. The 79-year-old, favourite to win a fifth term as president of FIFA in a vote on Friday, has divided the world's most popular sport as it again struggles to cast off the shadow of scandal. The Swiss official believes however that his jealous rivals no longer apply the notion of fair play in their backroom battles with him.
"In my 40 years at FIFA I have learned to live with hostility and resentment," he said recently. "However as the German language proverb puts it: sympathy is free, but envy must be earned."There is a lot to envy. Being head of FIFA for 17 years has elevated Blatter to 70th place in the Forbes list of the world's most powerful people -- the only sports leader in the group jostling behind the likes of Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama. The former amateur footballer -- an old fashioned striker -- joined FIFA in 1975 from a post marketing Swiss watches. Football's world body now has 1,400 staff and is sitting on a cash mountain of about $1.5 billion -- about enough to pay the bills if a World Cup had to be called off.
Nine of those charged were FIFA officials. Jeffrey Webb: Current FIFA vice president and executive committee member; Eduardo Li: current FIFA executive committee member-elect; Julio Rocha: Current FIFA development officer; Costas Takkas: current attache to the CONCACAF president; JackWarner, former FIFA vice president and executive committee member, Eu-
genio Figueredo: current FIFA vice president and executive committee member, Rafael Esquivel: current CONMEBOL executive committee member and Venezuelan soccer federation (FVF) president; Jose Maria Marin: Current member of the FIFA organising committee for the Olympic football tournaments; and Nicolas Leoz: Former FIFA executive committee member.
