THE NEW KING OF MYSORE... Yaduveer Krishnanadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar during his Coronation Ceremony in Mysore, on Thursday.

Women more forgiving towards attractive men WOMEN are a lot more likely to put up with misbehaviour in a man if he is attractive, a new study has found. Researchers at the Eastern Kentucky University in the US found that a woman's view of a man is influenced by how handsome and law-abiding he is. In what is called the "halo effect," people warm up to others with positive characteristics, such as handsomeness. The 'devil effect' or 'negative halo effect' comes into play when people assume that others possess

so-called 'bad' characteristics, based on traits such as unattractiveness. Two male faces - one attractive, the other not bearing similar features were paired in two written scenarios. In the one, the man committed a major social no-no, in the other not. The researchers found that whether a man transgressed a social norm was a much greater put-off than whether he was unattractive. Normally women do not feel differently towards a homely man who toes the line.

The halo and devil effect often comes into play when people view others' profiles on online dating sites. This will not be the case for an attractive men posting the same information, or unattractive ones who do not violate these norms.

issues like hazardous effect of mawa which is being sold in Marathwada and Vidharbha regions, the violation of law by beedi industry besides highlighting the current antitobacco laws in India. One of the panellists, Dr. Gupta drew comparison between opium and tobacco. “While opium has many medicinal benefits, there are many restrictions on it at present in India. But tobacco which has no medicinal benefits doesn't have too many restrictions,” said Dr Gupta. Meanwhile, Dr. Pankaj Chaturvedi, Head and Neck Oncologist at Tata Memorial Hospital said, “In Maharashtra alone, 31.4 percent of the population consumes tobacco. Among these, 90 percent of the population chews tobacco while the rest smoke. The government hasn't given

too much emphasis on curbing people from chewing tobacco than smoking it. It should start taking steps towards it,” said Dr. Chaturvedi. When asked about encouraging pictorial warnings on loose cigarettes, Dr. Chaturvedi said, “That will actually legalise the sale of loose cigarette which is what we don't plan to encourage.” Jalota refrained to comment on anything related to the Goods & Services Tax (GST) Bill as it was too early to comment on it. Doctors from the hospital will be campaigning in Marathwada and Vidharbha regions throughout the year raising awareness and helping people to let go of their addiction of mawa and gutka. The doctors will also be campaigning to ban the sale of loose cigarettes in Maharashtra.

Naidu as a somersault, it added that like the stand taken on Kashmir and Vidarbha, it hoped that the BJP will take a practical stand on the issue of Jaitapur nuclear power plant. It added that if they do so then the people of Maharashtra would take out a procession of the two on an elephant back.

Mentally ill youth thrown out of the hospital without proper treatment, alleges a social activist By Abhishek Vissapragada

A

n activist, Siddh Vidya has slapped a legal notice on J J Hospital at Sandhurst Road for medical negligence and throwing out a mentally ill patient, on Thursday. The patient had died last year and the activist has alleged that the hospital had not given proper treatment to the patient. Vidya explained about Krishna Mane, a 22-year-old mentally ill boy whom she found at Nerul Station. “I noticed Krishna a year ago at Nerul station. He was in a bad condition and was not able to walk. I took him to a local hospital near Nerul station to get him treated,” said Vidya. Mane was later transferred to JJ Hospital on April 7, 2014.

“I clearly remember the day I got Mane admitted in JJ Hospital. It was World Health Day and the hospital was celebrating the event. At first the hospital was not ready to admit the patient saying that he did not have proper identification. But after a long struggle they finally admitted him assuring that he will be given complete care,” said Vidya. Later Vidya started getting calls from Mane about how the hospital wasn't treating him well. “He said that they were not conducting any surgery on him when multiple surgery was suggested for his condition. He had injured his leg during a train accident and had also developed gangrene on it. He said that the hospital was not ready to cure his condition. I told him I will speak to the doctors,” said Vidya. The activist claims she spoke with many doctors and also requested them not to remove the patient from the hospital. “I was getting calls from the hospital that they could not cure the patient and will be removing him

ther inquiry, I cam to know that the police had not known anything about the patient's case,” said Vidya. She had got a call from Mane who was at that time at Sandhurst Road station. She later took Mane to an orphanage in Vikhroli but he was admitted at DY Patil Hospital, Nerul. “There I came to know that Krishna's kidneys had failed. He died in May 2014,” said Vidya. Vidya has also filed RTIs to know about the hospital's social wing. “It is through these Krishna Mane, the mentally ill RTIs that I came to know patient who died in May 2014 about this wing of the hospital. The doctors there told me from there. I told them they that the wing collects huge don't have any right to do so,” funds and donations but the said Vidya. ndia's most wanted criminal underworld Don Dawood Ibrahim's close aide Mustafa Dossa, facing trail for multiple cases including 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, has now made the police investigate their own personnel. The case goes back

earlier this month when he was brought to the Mumbai Sessions Court for a hearing. Dossa had instructed his aides to arrange for about 12 models for auditions as he wanted to hire them for a modeling assignment for a jewelery brand in Dubai. The incident came to light when one model turned up at the

police station after being robbed by Mustafa Dossa's aides posing as crime branch officials. Jt. CP (Crime), Atul kulkarni said, “We are awaiting a detailed report in the case. Once the report is available we will take further action.” This paper on Thursday had published a story about Azad Shrivastav | ADC

wo models created major chaos inside the DN Nagar police station late on Friday night and allegedly hurled abuses on the duty lady police sub inspector (PSI) and even manhandled one lady police constable who was trying to calm them down. Even after their shocking behavior, the police have registered a FIR against both the models but have failed to arrest them, even after five days have lapsed since the shocking incident. The models, Pooja Mishra and Shruti Gupta, are booked under the relevant sections of the IPC for abusing on duty police officers and using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging their duties. Police say that both the models were traveling late on Friday night when four boys riding an Audi car allegedly passed lewd comments at them. Both the models, began abusing the boys when one on-duty patrolling constable from DN Nagar police reached the spot and tried to get the situation under control. But the models started abusing

him as well. Sensing that the matter is getting out of hand, the constable asked the four boys in the car and the two models to come to the DN Nagar police station. The models assumed that the constable was trying to let them off and threatened to complain to Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria. They even clicked the constable's picture on their mobile phones. The constable relayed a wireless message that one Audi car is moving on the four bungalow road and should be brought to the DN Nagar police station. Soon after the incident, both the models reached the police station and created chaos there. They refused to recognize them and said that these boys are not the real accused. Pooja and Shruti even called the police officials there rapists. They even misbehaved with women police officials and used abusive language against them.

Senior police inspector of DN Nagar police station Dhanaji Nalawade said, “There are a total of 13 witnesses in this case registered against model Pooja Mishra and Shruti Gupta. We summoned the Audi car driver the next day but both the models refused to recognize him. We have registered a criminal case against the two models under the relevant sections of the IPC. Moreover, on their complaint, a case of eve-teasing has also been registered against unknown people. Now, we will send summons to these two models and call them for questioning and later they will be arrested.” The Audi car driver, Subhash Jadhav said, “We did not understand why both these women were making baseless allegations against us. I think these women are running some racket of targeting people in the night with a view to extort exorbitant sums of money from them.”

she could stay with them for the night. The girl agreed and the two rapists took her to Dharavi and after sometime brought her to a room in a leather factory. They called two other friends -- Salman Khan and R. Singh. The girl was raped by the four men. Later, one of the boys took her to a hotel for having some food. Here the girl began to cry. A man who was having food noticed the weeping girl. The rapist ran away. The man came to the girl, heard her story and called her home. For sometime, the girl did not reveal she was raped. Later, she told her family who lodged a complaint with the police. Three of the rapists were arrested but one of them -- Umesh -- managed to escape.

Although the health officer, Sandip Shinde, claimed that instructions had already been issued to the companies to strictly adhere to the mandatory safety guidelines, the MBMC never bothers to monitor the actual ground reality. This is evident when workers can be seen venturing into drains and cleaning chokedup nullahs without wearing any type of protective gear at various de-silting spots. “As per the terms of agreement, the onus of providing protective gears rests on the shoulders of the contractor. I will personally carry out a survey and ensure that no injustice is done to the workers,” said Civic Chief Achyut Hange. Meanwhile, leader of Shramjeevi Kaamgar Rayat Sanghatna, Dilip Gotarne has threatened to launch an agitation if the workers are not provided with safety equipment immediately.

Monsoon predictions can be wrong T

HE production of pulses and cereals in Maharashtra has gone down sharply, thanks to drought and also unseasonal rains. It is certain that the prices of pulses and cereals which are already high may go up further. The production of pulses has gone down by 64 per cent and cereals by 30 per cent. Unseasonal rains have affected the rabi crops as well. The state government is hoping that the monsoon which is expected to arrive in two or three weeks will be good and the kharif crops may go better than even the previous year. Predictions regarding rains are bright. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) is hopeful that the monsoon will be 93 per cent of average rainfall. A drowning man catches at a straw: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis appears to be depending on even private predictions. A private weather agency has come to the conclusion that the rainfall will be 103 per cent of the average. What we have gained from experience is that the predictions may not come true. The IMD’s predictions have gone wrong more than once. Perhaps instead of depending solely on predictions, it is better right now to get set for any eventuality. One thing is certain: Even if the kharif crop is good, there is likely to be a price rise of all essential articles.

opportunities for the labour sector

T

HE attainment of national political stability in the country has determined significant attention upon the national economy alongside the political situation and its consequential evolutionary symptoms. A relatively coherent government and effective economic decisions usually exhibit strong correlation with each other; ergo, prevailing economic policies are subjected to continuous public observance. While several factors contribute to enable the politico-economic dynamic to earn an all-embracive kudos, a principal factor determining so is the degree of employment opportunities available and its increase in due course of time, in order to strengthen the job market. Although, an unqualified approbation of the contemporary employment scenario might require still further improvements of this arena, the current trend is a pointer to relatively expanding opportunities for India’s labour sector.

sired. After independence a boost was given to industry – often a euphemism for manufacturing – alongside the agricultural sector. With the passage of subsequent decades, the expansion in manufacturing stayed limited compared to the demand and potential of the country. The agricultural sector, despite improvement in its production and marketing than before, was also lagging behind in modernisation of its techniques and the associated requisite training for all those engaged with it as their vocation. Expansion in and a qualitative upgrading of both sectors are an imperative. However, the relative expansion of the agricultural sec-

Sundry viewpoints The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-dominated National Democratic Alliance (NDA) dispensation has completed a year in office. Sundry viewpoints are being bandied about, endeavouring to draw up an appropriate balance sheet reflecting the government’s net annual performance. While each opinion has its particularities, similarities, and differences with others, the overall position, collectively, indicates a generic inference: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has initiated correct policy frameworks in the various sectors of governance, but he needs to follow them up with successful implementation and beware of evident challenges, which would have to be thwarted or rooted out. A crucial rub appears to be the direction and extent of the economic reforms. A balanced, results-oriented, and upward-spiralling; these are the coveted attributes with which the Indian economy should be identified. The labour market – constituted by the skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled workers – is being marked by progress towards the desired direction whereby manufacturing and services would witness an upward surge, with a subsequent expansion in organized employment opportunities, emphasis on improving worker’s skills, and the relative well-being of workers. In any country, the labour component is divided into two broad sectors: manufacturing and agriculture. India’s working force has, for ages, borne a predilection towards the agricultural sector, and even then its quality and productivity occasionally left much to be de-

BY AND LARGE Ranajoy Sen tor is often surpassed by that in the manufacturing sector, where high-skilled labour, applying their knowledge in various divisions of sundry industry and services, contains the capacity to generate sufficient avenues of employment, through new investments and associated job-creation. With government policies favouring this sector’s growth, the market itself reflects the desired results. Automobile, banking, apparel, e-commerce sectors, both within the country and from international investments within India, have started displayed symptoms of flux and increased the intensity of their respective economic operations. The automobile sector has received a fillip from the sluggishness with which it was marked earlier. An 89 per cent growth in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has lifted its sails for plunging ahead in the market. Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has decided to launch nine new brand vehicles. The aim is to effectively compete with other players of the market such as Renault, Ford, Maruti, and Tata, among others. Peugeot, a European car maker has plans to enter the Indian market, and might work in collaboration with M&M in certain areas.

Kotak Mahindra Bank is poised for an upcoming 21 FDI deals worth Rs. 281 crore. The expansion of the bank would bolster the financing of sundry new business ventures. Future Consumer Enterprise is apparently purchasing A.V. Birla group’s consumer products business. It is a testament to the company’s expansion. It had recently announced its intention to invest about 51 per cent in MNS Foods Private Limited through subscribing to its equity shares.

Increasing strength The e-commerce sector is also en route to pick up steam; in this industry, Snapdeal has acquired the Hyderabad-based mobile technology firm, MartMobi. In telecom, the Chinese telecom gear maker Huawei has expressed its intention to manufacture products at its Chennai plant and expand its sales personnel for further expansion in the Indian economy. Additionally, several Indian firms have acquired sufficient financial strength in order to spend significant financial amounts for official lobbying to take forward their particular interests in the United States. That they can do so is a testament to the increasing strength of Indian companies, who strive for expansion on foreign soil in order to generate wealth and value for the owners and workers. These economic developments are, by themselves, a pointer to Modi’s urges for ‘Make in India’ and his expressed declarations to spur up economic growth and make entrepreneurial undertakings expedient for the national interest. It reinforces the belief that the manufacturing sector of the country would expand, investments in it increase, and demand generate for employment of labour. The country would then reach a new ‘Labour Market Equilibrium’ indicating a new average national wage level, which would be higher than the former level. Nevertheless, agriculture would possibly also not be relegated to a lower priority. The Prime Minister’s declaration emphasizing the creating of food parks in the country implies that agricultural sector would be encouraged to undergo farreaching changes – through more emphasis on organic production and eco-friendly packaging – for product appreciation and consumer satisfaction. If the emerging trends are carried to their logical conclusion, the overall labour sector of the country would relatively improve in quality and efficacy. That has been a cherished aim since yore. It now seems within striking distance to begin its comprehensive amelioration.

Political heatwave soars

Whatever said and done; AAP Government under Arvind Kejriwal is going tough against the Lt. Governor and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The party is trying to pass scathing remarks after the courts order siding the Delhi Government. But both the Chief Minister and his deputy were sleepy during the special session of the assembly and nothing significant could be achieved in the so called special session. Even tantrums were shown in the Assembly to throw out BJP MLA with the help of Marshals. While the CM and deputy were feeling sleepy over the recent developments and the subsequent war of words, what is the need for calling special session only to shame the opposition. The tit for tat attitude of Kejriwal is against national interest and may lead to a permanent enmity between the State and the Centre and does not augur well for the development of the capital city of India.

Lame-brained excuse I HAVE read in an English daily that the mystery of the Rs.21 lakhs found in cash in a cupboard in the office of the late Chief Executive Officer of the BPP has been solved by the police. It is stated that as the person had cancer, perhaps he 'forgot' to account for cash donations that may have been received from donors. This explanation has been found satisfactory by the Chairman and, though not mentioned, even the other trustees. Most importantly, the police accept this. This is a lame-brained excuse of a solution and reeks of a huge cover up; one more of the shenanigans of the merry band of community leaders who have let us down consistently during their tenure as trustees. It further confirms that the police will accept any solution as long as they are kept happy and they can announce that they have cracked one more pending case. It's a crying shame.

The incident was blown hot and the arrests made cleared the doubts and thus blown cold as well. — C.K. Ramani, Nerul

Met department predicts moderate to heavy rains this year. But the municipal corporation seems to be lethargical in launching their pre-monsoon plan APROPOS 'A repeat of 26/7 deluge?' (ADC, May 27), it is indeed agonising to learn with huge anguish how the BMC neglect to carry out such critical works like the clean up of the drains/nullahs especially in the Govandi area, wherein even today this vital work is yet to be undertaken thereby causing serious concern to those who live here. bureau reports moderate to heavy rains this time and we should get well prepared to face flooding and the calamity that follows during the monsoon season. First of all we should have a disaster management committee in place to meet the challenges in such a ticklish situation. NMMC is lagging behind in the preparations. The people in satellite city are dumping debris, iron rod, mud, stones, plastic bags to cause a major blockage. Steps should be taken to avoid flash floods in the low lying areas. The waste generated in tones by the construction work is causing major concern. The Civil administration has already issued an appeal to avoid dumping of waste and prevent major block in the drainage system in the city. If this dumping is not stopped, we fear that this city will become another clogged and overflowing during incessant rains and water logging in the low lying areas. NMMC should oversee the cleaning operations in good earnest and see that there is no scope for water logging during monsoon season at focal points in the city. — Jayanthy Subramaniam, Sanpada

The trains are coming from longer routes and are often every congested. However back here in Mumbai, the people are being informed about the conditions and a 60-70

One of the passengers Nilesh Chandrant, who was about to go to Rajasthan, thanked railways for informing him before hand and refunding his money. “The strike should end soon and people should start realising that stopping the trains and road route should not be done as this is the peak season when people travel,”

he said. Another passenger Riaz Ali, who has to attend his brother's wedding, said, “I was going to Bharatpur and had reserved my tickets months ago. But my whole family is stranded today on the day of travel. I cannot afford air tickets and hence could not attend my own brother's wedding.” Ramdas Warange, who was travelling to meet his sister who had arrived from the USA, could not meet her. “I have not met my sister from the last seven years and she had arrived from the USA few weeks ago and I got stuck here. However, I have got my compensation and have booked a flight.” aroosa.ahmed@afternoondc.in

iffed with the government's policies and practices with respect to armed forces, ex-servicemen say they will heighten their agitation till the one-rank, one-pension mechanism is implemented. Veteran Wing Commander (retd) Suresh Damodar Karnik has declined an invite to a government function. Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will be attending the function. Karnik, a 1971 war hero, alleged that false promises were made by the government as it had been a year and the order in regard to pension has not been implemented as yet.The veteran wing commander also said that there ex-servicemen will hold a protest in New Delhi on June 14.Ex-servicemen were left disappointed once again when PM Narendra Modi did not announce implementation of the long-demanded one-rank, one-pension (OROP) mechanism for them during his rally in Mathura earlier this week. Many were fuming. "Earlier, it was said OROP would be announced in the Union Budget. But it looks that the file is still being tossed between the defence and finance ministries, with the two ministers issuing contradictory statements. The previous UPA regime had also announced it. But where is the money?" asked a brigadier. The government has over the last few months repeatedly declared its intention of announcing full implementation of OROP with a corpus of around Rs 8,300 crore. But the nitty-gritty of finalizing the modalities has held it back. OROP

Wing Com. (retd) Suresh Damodar Karnik alleged that false promises were made. basically implies payment of a uniform pension to personnel retiring in the same rank with the same length of service, irrespective of their date of retirement. Successive governments in the past had contended that granting full OROP was neither financially nor administratively possible, especially since it could lead to a cascading effect with similar demands being made by others like paramilitary personnel. The Modi government, however, has defined "military pension" as a category separate from other kinds of pensions to justify implementation of OROP since soldiers, sailors and airmen retire at a much younger age than other government employees as well as undergo prolonged hardship tenures.

There are so many different ways to decorate your coffee table that one story can’t give you enough information. But, if you want to keep things simple, here’s a basic guide. n Get in some nature: Too much wood can make your home

look dull and sometimes, even boring. You need to ensure that there’s a good balance of earthy wood and bright, natural colours. And, your coffee table is the perfect place to do so. From tiny plants (get faux plants if you don’t have the time to take care of a plant) to showpieces in colours such as green and blue, there are several ways to add a touch of nature to your coffee table as well as to your décor.

n No to fruit baskets: You’d be surprised to see how many

home décor magazines and blogs proudly display fruit baskets perched on top of a coffee table. But, this is not only impractical (it uses valuable space), it doesn’t add to your décor either. Place the fruit basket on your dining table, if you have one, and place a cute tray with tiny knick-knacks on your coffee table instead.

n Minimalistic glory: Sometimes, simple arrangements work

Trippy much? These bottles from ICasa may not be functional, but we can’t deny how lovely they will look on a coffee table! Price `5,645 (green bottle) and `7,115 (yellow bottle)

best. Placing just a vase and a few books will lend a classy touch to your coffee table. You can swap the vase for a tray with items such as coasters and tiny show-pieces.

I

am not really for or against well-known designers launching their own websites. But, so far, the implementation has been so shoddy that before I logged on to MonishaJaising.com, there wasn’t a single designer website that I would recommend. My first look at the website did nothing to banish my misgivings. The silver and gold logo doesn’t really fit in with the website’s stark white background and I felt as though this was another website that would suffer because of unimaginative design and the aim to push a designer name. But, boy was I surprised! Click on the ‘Shop’ link on the homepage and you’ll be taken to a shopping section that features sub-sections such as Luxe Sportswear, Resort Wear, Evening Wear, Bridal, MJ Kids and Runway Looks — it’s a good idea for me to mention here that MJ Kids stands for Monisha Jaising’s collection for children, and has nothing to do with Michael Jackson! While the Luxe Sportswear collection is pretty standard with a smattering of T-shirts, T-shirt dresses, sweat shirts and trackpants (all decently-priced between `1,950 and `6,000), it was the Resort Wear and Evening Wear subsections that really caught my fancy. The former houses a >> MonishaJaising.com’s layout fails to impress beautiful range of printed dresses and a few well-detailed kurta tops, all of which are worth checking out. The Evening Wear collection is where Monisha Jaising truly shines. You can expect classy, solid designs in contemporary as well as classic cuts. The Evening Wear and Bridal section are both made-to-measure, and so delivery time is 25 days instead of the usual 15 days — most customers may appreciate a quicker turnaround time. The Bridal section left me confused — bridal wear is not something that anyone would buy off a website. But, the beautiful Louis XV jacket and the classy Ottoman jacket make a solid case for the section, helping make the website a serious contender for your bridal couture needs. The Luxe Sportswear section aside, you can expect to spend a minimum of `10,000 on MonishaJaising.com. Overall, I was pleased with the website. I was hard-pressed to find something that I wouldn’t pick for a friend or a family member and the website’s design is simple. Prices match what you would expect from a designer store, but unlike most others, MonishaJaising.com has a range of affordable clothing as well. Where www.monishajaising.com

This is exactly how Sarita Handa’s flagship store in Mumbai looks. Sarita Handa is a name associated with premium home furnishings. She has been beautifying homes in India as well as abroad for the past 20 years. After launching stores in New Delhi, She has finally set up shop in Mumbai, near Shakti Mills in Mahalaxmi. The store is spread across 2,500sq.ft, so it’s quite easy to spot. As soon as I entered the store, the first thought that came to mind was ‘I wish there was enough space in Mumbai to have a house like this!’ You will definitely agree with me when you visit the store! The space is a mix of contemporary and antique styles, with pops of teal embellishing the doors and windows, teamed with an interesting, antique stone Buddha sculpture at the entrance. The hanger-like industrial ceiling and multi-level mezzanine floor are both extremely eye-catching. What’s even more interesting is the small courtyard adjoining the store full of greenery and a beautiful Banyan tree that is bound to evoke feelings of tranquillity and wellbeing. Every section in the store is designed the way your home should be — a living room that includes sofas and chandeliers, a dining room with chairs and a big table and a bedroom with a king-sized bed, mirror and some plants.

The work on the cushions, bedspreads and furniture is mostly hand embroidered but at first glance, the designs look printed. The work is so intricate that it makes it is to tell the difference. I was completely blown away! The colour palette of the store is warm and neutral, and eludes an organic feeling because of the extensive use of earthy neutrals, dark, rich mochas and some fashionable greys. Most of the collections play with sheen, the fabrics helping to generate a more glamorous vibe. The latest offering from the brand is an extensive range of rugs, kilims and antique Persian carpets, stunning wall art and paintings that

showcase work by both young as well as established artists. Also available in various sizes and colours are new bedding ensembles with decorative pillows. A new collection of signature Sarita Handa fabrics for drapery and upholstery with jacquards and textured and embroidered fabrics is also exclusively displayed at the store. There is also an array of decorative accessories to choose from — the bronze statue collection, nickel finish decorative pieces such as trays and wine coolers and antique decorative pieces made of wood, clay and stone. The store also houses new furniture designs in cane daybeds, dining tables, chairs with embroidered backs, consoles, beds and side tables in teak wood, oak wood and reclaimed wood. In other words, Sarita Handa is a one-stop shop for all your housing needs, especially if you’re looking for a place that offers an amalgamation of both luxe and aesthetic designs. The best part is that their entire collection blends seamlessly with different types of décor. Prices range from the affordable to the exclusive — the cushions start from `2,000, bedspreads from `12,000 and furniture from `50,000. Don’t forget to drop by! Drop the Bar Afternoon Despatch & Courier

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, MAY 29, 2015

We’re a little late to the party but after the success of its first two outlets in andheri and Oshiwara, we had to see what the big deal was at the third outlet of the Bar stock exchange at Bandra Kurla Complex. Yamini Walia & sara shah tell you whether it lived up to the hype

the ConCePt The concept of Bar Stock Exchange (TBSE) is so unique and different that it’s been generating quite a buzz since it opened its first outlet. After all, how many other restaurants offer Old Monk at a starting price of `17, a Kingfisher pint at `65 and whiskey brands such as Black & White at `87? Unbelievable, isn’t it?! TBSE is the first pub chain in India to own proprietary bar stock exchange software, which uses a comprehensive algorithm to determine and change the price of a drink for the next customer, based on demand and supply. If you deal in stocks or are familiar with stock trading, the concept of Bar Stock Exchange will be easier for you to understand. For the uninitiated, here’s how it goes: The prices of your favourite drink start at the base price and rise in direct proportion to their consumption over a period of time. Every increasing peg/ pint ordered by a patron increases its value margin, to be brought down once again if time is on your side (if orders for the same drink decrease over a period of time). The best part is that the market can crash at any time — a loud siren is played to signal the crash, the screens on the bar and the dedicated application you’re given will notify you as the prices crash all the way down to

>> The ambiance at Bar Stock Exchange generates a fun vibe up or down. We seated ourselves at one of the high tables that overlooked the entire complex. Overall, the ambiance generates a casual, but fun vibe, which makes it a great place to visit with a group of friends.

the Food

>> The BBQ Chicken Quesadillas were our favourite for the evening cost price aka MRP. We’re sure this has left you excited already!

the AmbiAnCe The BKC outlet has an al-fresco space as well as indoor seating. But, the outer area was complemented by windy weather on the day we visited, so we chose to sit outside! The area comprises of the bar with screens on which you can see the alcohol stocks going

It’s all RIte

For starters, we ordered their BBQ Chicken Quesadillas (`215) and Popcorn Chicken Tikka (`210). With crispy tortillas outside and melting cheese, shredded chicken and vegetables inside, the quesadillas were served with sour cream and tomato salsa and the entire dish packed a delicious punch. We decided that these were one of the best quesadillas that we’ve had in a while. The Popcorn Chicken Tikka was quite appetising as well. Pungent, but crispy, it served as the perfect snack with our chilled beer. We also tried their Mexican Bean Nachos (`175), the Mezze Platter (`165) and Basil Infused Panko Prawns (`220). The Nachos, frankly, were dismal. Everything looked like one hot mess, which didn’t help. We did like the Mezze Platter, which included dips such as Baba Ghanoush, mixed bean pate, hummus and falafel — all of which were accompanied by triangles of fluffy pita bread. The hummus was delicious, and so were the other dips, but the falafel had us pushing our plates aside —

Whether you love or hate them, you’ve probably had at least a few of them! Rhea Dhanbhoora sees whether Rite Bite’s latest nutrition bars are as run-off-the-mill as most

T

here’s no reason for me to pick a nutrition bar. I don’t need to eat breakfast in a jiffy, I can usually afford myself the luxury of a ten-minute break for a proper snack and I don’t stop myself from digging into a second helping of dessert. Still, I spent several months eating at least one nutrition bar a day, more to satiate sudden hunger pangs (it will leave you fuller than a bar of chocolate would!) and to stave off a sudden sugar dip. Since I’ve never bothered to count calories, I can’t say that I was whooping with delight about trying the Eazy Herbal Bars, which are Rite Bite’s latest offering for those who skip meals, depend on nutrition bars and are tired of run-off-the-mill, chocolate-covered ones. While the range of herbal bars aims to manage weight, I (thankfully) didn’t really lose any as I indulged in them. They also promise to provide you with protein and a lot of fibre. What interested me more was the strange flavour (see box for more) and herb combinations — with all that goodness, how bad could they really be, right? They promise to deliver calories that will fit into any weight-loss plan — and perhaps they would. They’ve also started a new Max Protein range (for all those who are pumping iron I assume), with flavours that include Choco Slim, Choco Fudge and Honey Lemon. All interesting flavours, at least by the sound of it. How healthy are they really? I couldn’t say. But I will say this — they don’t taste like cardboard; they’re much more interesting than the dull berry and chocolate flavours

it was not good, to say the least. We loved their Panko Prawns, which had a nice, crunchy crust outside and a delectable flavour inside. Since we went overboard with our starters, we decided to order something light for our main course. We settled for a Crispy Chicken Fried Rice (`225), which judging by its quantity, didn’t seem like a light bite at all. But, it tasted just alright. Once it was established that we couldn’t eat any more, we decided to order their desserts and were recommended the Nutty Caramel (`200) and Death By Chocolate (`200). Unfortunately, both were overwhelmingly sweet. We were pleased with the concept but the food was a disappointment. Their starters fare well and the lively ambiance and the jolly interiors make your experience better. However, remember that you will only get in if you’re above 24-years-old. Carry a valid ID if you don’t want to be rejected at the door!

flavours from Rite Bite and here’s a lowdown on what I thought: Tulsi + Lemonbalm + Amla + Ginger Yes, lemonbalm. In a nutrition bar. It sounds awful, but apart from the fact that you’re going to feel like you’ve just entered a spa when you tear the packet open, it’s surprisingly flavourful! It’s called Easy Immune, but it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. Green tea + Guggul + Yerba Mate + Gardenia Speaking of tea, I thought the Easy Slim would be an easy favourite. Unfortunately, I was wildly disappointed. It’s got a hint of chocolate that takes away from the subtle hints of tea or herb, leaving you with a pretty dull, run-off-the-mill bar.

floating around the market and they’re incredibly filling. So, if you’re looking to switch from your evening vada pav to something even a tiny bit healthier than a deep fried snack, I wouldn’t hesitate to suggest sinking your teeth into one of these.

FlAvour Fight The sad thing about nutrition bars is that they usually taste awful! I sampled three pretty offbeat Eazy Herbal bar

Ashwagandha + Passion Flower + Tulsi This sounded horrible, but I should have known from the addition of tulsi that I was going to enjoy it the most. It’s dark, heady and extremely flavourful — in fact, it comes very close to not tasting like a nutrition bar! Did I obtain the Easy Calm? I’m not quite sure. Of course, since this tasted the best, it’s no surprise that it contained the highest amount of calories as well. Price `90 each Availability Major retail outlets across the city

Bekal Beckons Afternoon Despatch & Courier Special

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, MAY 29, MUMBAI | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 03, 2015 2010

Bekal is a charming little town on the west coast of Kerala that makes for the perfect romantic getaway. From taking cosy walks on the beach to gorging on delicious, authentic Kerala cuisine, Bekal is all about untouched nature and flawless beauty, says Samreen Samad

G

oing all the way from Mumbai to Kerala just a weekend may seem preposterous, but it was my birthday weekend and I was desperate for a break. Little did I know that this would turn out to my best birthday yet! Two hours away from Mangalore airport, the picturesque drive to Bekal was accompanied by plenty of fresh banana and tapioca wafers.

luxe liFe I checked into the Vivanta by Taj – Bekal (The retreat is a hidden haven that pops out of nowhere). The large Ganesha idol at the entrance is welcoming and so is their customer service staff. Once my check-in formalities were over I was escorted to my villa. Interestingly, the villa design is inspired by Kettuvallam house boats. The villas are spacious and include a private pool, an outdoor bath tub, a well-furnished room and a large bathroom. After a long, much-needed nap, I stepped outside to explore the resort. After checking out the gorgeous backwaters and lush landscape, covered by rows of palm trees, I made my way to Latitude for a quick lunch. My meal comprised of delicious smoked salmon and fish curry cooked in coconut milk, in an inescapable Kerala style. By evening,I was well-rested and relaxed and took a quick dip in my private pool.

>> Vivanta by Taj – Bekal is a calming resort to stay at when you’re visiting the beach town

historical essence Next morning, I hopped into a tuk-tuk to visit the famous Bekal Fort. The keyhole-shaped fort is huge and offers a panoramic view of the beach. Even though it’s a major tourist spot, the fort isn’t very crowded, and this makes for a good place to unwind. I made a beeline for the spa at the resort to soothe my aching muscles afterwards— a testament to my sedentary lifestyle back home.

GettinG there You can reach Bekal by flight or train. The nearest airport is in Mangalore, which is around 50 km away. Once you land in Mangalore, you can hire a taxi to take you to Bekal. Travelling by train will take you longer, but will be cheaper and you’ll reach closer to Bekal than you would by flight. The Kasaragod railway station is around 12km from Bekal. Once you reach Kasaragod by train, you can either hire a cab or hop on to a state transport bus that will take you to Bekal.

Beach Bum The highlight of my trip was cycling to the fabulous Kappil Beach. The clean, white sand and clear water has quite a calming effect. The inviting hammocks at the beach ensured that I lazed under the pretty blue sky until hunger hit me. Bekal is a dream destination for those who are looking for a mix of nature and luxury. The beach town is the perfect place to rejuvenate, relax and simply laze around — something that’s very rare for cityfolks like me.

>> The tranquility that Bekal offers makes it a perfect weekend destination

>> The town of Bekal gives you a taste of Kerala’s natural beauty

Fact File n The word Bekal is believed to be a

corrupted derivation of the word ‘Beliakulam’, which means a big palace. It is believed that Bekal was once the seat of a large palace, which was guarded by what is now known as the Bekal Fort. However, this may well be a myth, since no remains of a palace have ever been found around the fort. n The Bekal Fort is supposed to be the oldest fort in Kerala. While it has been recorded that the fort was constructed some time during the mid-1600s, tracing its exact history is difficult. n The Bekal Fort demonstrates the brilliant knowledge of defence strategy that existed centuries ago. From secret tunnels leading out to the

sea to a zig-zag entrance, presumably to keep the enemy under watch for longer, the fort has a wonderfully designed defensive layout. n Bekal is surrounded by several hill stations that are perfect for a one-day visit. Ranipuram, Kottancherry and Possadigumpe will all make your vacation more memorable. These hill stations are also great trekking destinations. n While Bekal beach is a great spot that will leave you with long-lasting, happy memories, Muzhappilangad beach, which is around 100km from Bekal, is also worth a visit. The 4 km stretch is the only beach in Kerala where you can drive a vehicle and the beach itself is a swimmer’s paradise.

GDP Growth To Slow To 7.2% In Jan - Mar Qtr: Moody’s By A Business Reporter

I

ndia's economic growth rate in the January-March quarter is likely to slip to 7.2% from 7.5% in the previous three months, mainly on account of lower production and weak global demand, credit rating agency Moody's said yesterday. It also raised questions on the new GDP data series by the Central Statistical Organization (CSO), which takes 2011-12 as the base year, saying that new data "are dubious" as they do not align well with other in-

dicators of economy. As per CSO's new GDP data, the Indian economy expanded by 6.9% in 2013-14 and for 2014-15 the growth is estimated at 7.4%. CSO will release its March quarter GDP data tomorrow. For the quarter ended March Moody's said the economic growth "will likely show a slowdown to 7.2%, year-on- year, from 7.5% in the December quarter". It said, "External headwinds weighed on India's March quarter GDP. The trade deficit widened, exports fell at double-digit in the

opening months of 2015. Mixed global demand is partly to be blamed, while lower global commodity prices are also hurting exporter incomes." It added however that India's potential growth rate is "likely closer" to 9%. As regards domestic factors, Moody's said commercial banks have been reluctant to pass on the interest rate cuts effected by the Reserve Bank. "High borrowing costs are hurting the business sector, as manufacturing production grinds lower," it added.

‘DIPP Working On Guidelines For E-Commerce Sector’ By A Business Reporter

D

epartment of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) is working on guidelines for e-commerce sector in the backdrop of ongoing tussle between online and offline retailers, a top government official said. The government is aware of the issues between e-commerce retailers and brick-and-mortar outlets and it would "shortly address" this by evolving guidelines through FDI policy, DIPP Joint Secretary Atul Chaturvedi said at a PHDCCI event. The DIPP is "working on guidelines to address the issue of ongoing

tug of war between e-commerce retailers and their counterparts in bricks and mortar," he said. However, he said the government is unlikely to regulate the e-commerce entities since a clear-cut policy on this front is in place. Chaturvedi said this while addressing a session on 'Ease of Doing Business and the Government Policy' organised by PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI). At present, 100% foreign direct investment (FDI) is allowed only in business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce and not in the retail segment. NCDEX Launches Forward Contracts To Mobilise Recycled Gold By A Business Reporter

T

o bring idle gold into the market, NCDEX yesterday launched forward trading contracts called 'Gold Now' in 1 kg and 100 grams gold bars including the recycled ones. The new forward gold contracts will not only give impetus to the Indian gold refinery industry, but also complement the government's proposed Gold Monetisation Scheme (GMS) and 'Make in India' programme, it added. "We have launched two contracts -- 100 grams and 1 kg gold bar contracts. We intend to offer contracts in 5 gram, 10 gram

and 50 grams coins in the next six months," NCDEX Managing Director and CEO told reporters here. Under 'Gold Now' contracts, one can trade in 'imported gold' accredited by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) as well as recycled 'India gold' from domestic refineries, he said. Under these contracts, gold will be compulsorily delivered to buyers from six centres -- Delhi, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Kochi, Hyderabad and Chennai. To ensure quality of recycled domestic gold, NCDEX has accredited four domestic refineries -- MMTC Pamp, Kundan, Shirpur Gold Refinery and Edelweiss Gold Refinery as 'Good Delivery' gold refiners on the exchange platform, he added. Stating that the 'Gold Now' contracts perfectly complement the government's proposed Gold Monetisation Scheme (GMS), Shah said, "When you open a gold deposit account under the proposed GMS, you will get a fixed rate of 1%. But on the exchange platform, returns are driven by the market. One may get 5-6% re-

turns." That apart, the new initiative will help mobilise 'Make in India' gold by linking up the entire domestic gold recycling industry and help bring an estimated 25,000 tonnes of idle gold into the market, he added. "We need to create lot of awareness in the market. Hopefully, if we get 5% of an estimated 25,000 tonnes of idle gold, you can imagine the impact it will have in reducing imports," Shah said. The gold demand in India, the world's largest consumer, will not not come down. The supply side can be addressed by mobilising the idle gold, he added. NCDEX, which has huge presence in agriculture commodities, is also offering 'Gold Hedge' and 'Gold Futures' contracts to importers and local jewellers, respectively.

New online platform ‘Gold Now’

N

ational Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) has launched a new national online platform for buying and selling gold. The platform called 'Gold Now' will accept gold recycled in approved refineries, the exchange said in a statement here. This is aimed at reducing the dependence on imports, it added. "With the launch of the Gold Now national marketplace, we are creating an ecosystem that is at par with international standards and which will help the bullion and jewellery industry improve its efficiencies," said Samir Shah, managing director and chief executive of NCDEX. The Gold Now platform will provide an impetus to the domestic recycling industry, which at present consists of 17 refineries.

ctor Anil Kapoor revealed it was Amitabh Bachchan who suggested him not to take a break from acting as the Bollywood megastar made a mistake by doing so. Kapoor, who has been in the industry for almost 38 years now, said there was a time when he was pondering to take sabbatical but spoke to Bachchan who advised him not to go for it. "I can't remember any best or worst phase of my career. For me it is always about reinvention and experimenting. I am consistent, steady and feel fortunate to be a part of good films. I remember we were shooting for 'Armaan'... There was a time when I wanted to take sabbatical and I did speak to Amitabh ji about it," Kapoor told PTI. "He (Bachchan) said he made the mistake of not working for some years and told me not to take a break. I have not taken ever. I respect him, I look upto him," he said. In 1984, Bachchan took a break from acting and briefly entered politics and resigned after three years. In 1988, he returned to films, achieved success for a while but later saw a dull phase till popular game show 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' happened in 2000. Talking about the kind of risks that Kapoor took in his long career, he said, "I love experimenting, reinventing right from the beginning of my career. I have taken too many risks.. Dangerous risks. argis Fakhri, who is all set to mark her Hollywood debut with upcoming film 'Spy', attended the UK premiere of the film, which was held at Odeon Leicester Square, London, on Wednesday. It surely was a big event for Nargis and she made sure that all eyes were set on her when she walked on the red carpet. Nargis slipped into a risqué red cutout gown by Monisha Jaisingh for the event. Her bold keyhole neckline, made her look very glamorous but her sandals stuck out like a sore thumb. A messy ponytail and dewy make-up completed her look. The lead actors of the film, Jason Statham, Melissa McCarthy and Jude Law also attended the premiere along with director Paul Feig.

"If I go in crowd people would never call me Anil Kapoor, they would call me Munna, Lakhan, Mr India, Majnu bhai or say Jhakaas or a few famous dialogues of mine," he added. While Bachchan's grand comeback on the small screen with Anurag Kashyap's 'Yudh' failed to garner attention, Kapoor managed to achieve success on small screen with his debut show '24' and the shows have often drawn comparisons.

Mithun’s son Mimoh wants to carve a niche all by himself in Bollywood By Chaitanya Padukone

I

n showbiz, it’s considered an apparent disadvantage for most starsons to have a popular legendary actor as a father who is still hyper-active. That’s because the audience invariably tends to ‘compare’ the father and son and the son has to face the acid test on screen. That’s what seems to have transpired in the case of talented actor Mahaakshay who happens to be rugged senior star Mithun Chakraborty’s actor son whose latest movie is titled ‘Ishqedarriyan’ in which he is paired opposite glam babe Evelyn Sharma. Seven years ago, Mahaakshay debuted as Mimoh with a lead role in ‘Jimmy’ (2008) playing a DJ, who is falsely accused of murder, which hijacks him into the world of crime. Curiously, Mimoh, specially coined by Mithun, happens to be the acronym of the initial letters of the first names of legends Michael Jackson and Mohammed Ali . Interestingly, the junior Chakraborty’s first hit movie was the form of the 3-D flick ‘Haunted’ which was in the ‘horror’ genre. Recently, as if to break any possible jinx, the young actor even ventured to co-star with his mascot father Mithun-da in this action thriller movie ‘Enemmy’ which mer-

ited mixed responses. “Right from the day I decided to step into acting, I have been shouldering the onus of being Mithun-da’s son. It gives me a secret sense of pride and inspirational morale boost. But I am not apprehensive of being compared. My dad has his own unique dance styles, dialogue delivery and acting mannerisms. Although it runs in my genes, I make a conscious effort ‘not’ to copy dad’s styles, as I wish to have my own distinct identity.

What I learnt from my dad is that humility is the biggest star quality,” enthuses Mahaakshay, whose graceful mother Yogita Bali happens to be a noted yesteryear Bollywood actress. Was Mithun-da known for his tongue-in-cheek wit, critical of his son’s histrionic screen-talent? “Bahut rarely taareef karte hain. The day Dad spontaneously says, ‘Waah beta kya baat …’ thrice, it will be like a precious award for me,” he signs off.

PROBLEMS WITH PIKU

I

t’s three weeks since the release of Piku and from all accounts it seems to be a surprise hit, in spite of not having any typical mainstream cinema elements. Some people found its preoccupation with bowel movements distasteful, though they are obviously in a minority. Of course every filmmaker wants to make money, and a feature film does not necessarily have to be realistic; still, one can’t but help be disappointed by the fact that a film had a chance to examine the issue of aging and the problems of geriatric care in urban nuclear families and turned it into a silly giggle. All over urban areas, women—mostly women, daughters and daughters-in-

law—are looking after aging parents and negotiating their way through the pressures of their own lives and careers. So

RINGSIDE VIEW Deepa Gahlot portraying a selfish, mean and cantankerous old man as ‘cute’ is doing all these women (and some men) a great disfavour. There is a scene in

which Bhaskar Bannerjee (played by Amitabh Bachchan) sneers at marriage, refers to his dead wife as a low IQ woman and casually insults his sister-in-law (Moushumi Chatterjee) because she has been married more than once. This man must have given his wife a rough time; he continues to harass his daughter Piku (Deepika Padukone) and the domestic helpers; there is one inexplicably loyal slave, Budhan (Balendra Singh), who is not even treated as a human being. He is on perpetual toilet duty and his treatment by supposedly civilised people is deplorable. Who could like or care for such a man? But the filmmaker and screenwriter (Juhi Chaturvedi) want us to. In so many Indian

families the patriarchs are selfcentred brutes, who think women and children exist only to serve them. Such men should not be turned into heroes. What kind of father would tell a potential suitor of his daughter that she is not a virgin? Why are we supposed to laugh at this vicious character? If Bannerjee is a horrible man, on the other side is the male lead Rana’s mother (Nutan Mathur), a relentlessly nagging shrew; the difference is that he treats her with disdain while Piku practically worships her father and indulges his every whim. The message being, fathers are more important than mothers—is that it? The film’s characters seem to exist without a past, though a really good writer would au-

tomatically include a kind of history. Two scenes illustrate this: Piku is interrupted at an important professional meeting with a message from her father and she asks the secretary to read it out. It turns out to be her father’s bowel movement report. Would she not have known by then what he is like and at least had the sense not to have the message read out loud? And then leave the meeting to go home, when she knows perfectly well that there is nothing wrong with her father and the frequency or consistency of his stool is not an emergency. Another time Piku is interrupted on a date with another of her father’s crap reports; the man she is lunching with understandably loses his appetite. This writer did too!

Sushant’s trainer trains Sandeepa Dhar A

fter giving some amazing performances in ‘Dabangg 2’ and ‘Heropanti’, Sandeepa is back with ‘7 Hours to go’. Critics favorite child Sandeepa Dhar is all set to play a cop in her forthcoming film ‘7 Hours to go’. The actress is playing a hardcore cop and not holding anything back to portray the character with as much conviction as possible. She will be seen doing some deadly stunts in the film that most men in the industry will shy away from.” “I play a cop in ‘7 Hours to go’ and it is imperative that my character’s physique seems like a person who has undergone rigorous physical training. I felt it was important for me to learn a martial art form so that my body language is natural as a cop. Thus I started training in MMA from a highly recommended trainer who used to train Sushant Singh Rajput,” says Sandeepa Dhar. Sandeepa being a perfectionist she is going out of her way to give it a perfect shot. Sandeepa will be seen in some high end action stunts in the film and to get the perfect look and body language Sandeepa is getting trained in MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) from Sushant Singh’s trainer.

Varun, Shraddha can act and dance, so they’re in my film’s sequel: Remo H

aving made ‘ABCD’ with a bunch of non-actors, director Remo D’Souza says for the sequel he wanted people with well-honed acting skills and so he zeroed down on Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor. The 43-year-old choreographer-filmmaker is taking the dance franchise forward with the upcoming movie and said the script required actors, who could easily get into the skin of professional dancers in the movie, slated to hit the screens on June 19.

“The first film had non-actors, so I made them act. For the second one I wanted somebody who could perform as the main lead is a very strong character in the film. I wanted an actor who could perform and dance at the same time... I could think of no one but Varun. Shraddha came into the picture after Varun,” Remo told PTI. “They (Varun and Shraddha) behaved, acted and danced like any other dancer. When you watch the film, you will realise that they are not stars but characters, who are part of the story,” he said.

Varun has displayed his moves in his previous films like ‘Student of The Year’, ‘Main Tera Hero’ and ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya’. However, Shraddha is yet to showcase her dancing skills onscreen but Remo said he was impressed with her when she came for the rehearsals. “People said she can’t dance. When she came to the rehearsal hall, she said ‘you can test me’. She showed her dancing skills, so we took the decision and she came in,” said the director, who has earlier helmed ‘FALTU’.

Subhash Ghai to receive IIFA Lifetime Achievement award 2015 N

EW DELHI, (PTI) Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai will be given the prestigious Lifetime Achievement honour at the upcoming International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards ceremony in Kuala Lumpur next month. Ghai, 70, who directed notable films like "Kalicharan", "Karz", "Hero", "Ram Lakhan" and "Taal", will be honoured for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema and nurturing young talents through his media institution Whistling Woods. "We have decided to give the special honour to Subhash Ghai. He is a great filmmaker and his contribution to Indian cinema is immense. We have named the award as Outstanding Contribution to Indian cinema instead of Lifetime Achievement because we present the honour to the living legends of Indian cinema, who are yet to achieve many more milestones in their career," Andre Timmins, spokesperson IIFA, told PTI. The award will be presented to him by leading actors of his blockbuster "Ram Lakhan" Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff, whom he introduced in "Hero". Ghai, who is known for making guest appearances in his own movies, has been the part of the film industry since 1967. Often called as the showman of Indian cinema, Ghai started his career in Bollywood as an actor with small roles in films including "Taqdeer" before he called the shots. He had the privilege of directing legendary actor Dilip Kumar with whom he worked in "Vidhaata" (1982), "Karma" (1986) and "Saudagar". He is married to Mukta Ghai and they have a daughter Meghna Ghai, who looks after his media institute in Mumbai. IIFA 2015 will start from June 5.

CALLS FOR FIFA’S BLATTER TO QUIT AS GLOBAL ANGER BUILDS

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, MAY 29, 2015

Z

URICH: FIFA president Sepp Blatter faced angry demands to step down after US indictments and the dawn arrests of top officials engulfed world football in the biggest crisis yet of his 17-year reign. Stunned by the arrests of senior FIFA figures, top sponsors who pour millions into world football, including Coca-Cola, Adidas, McDonald's and Visa, pressed the global body to clean itself up. Visa said that unless FIFA rebuilds its culture with "strong ethical practices" at its heart, "we have informed them that we will reassess our sponsorship". FIFA was adamant that despite the arrests early Wednesday of the seven officials in a luxury Zurich hotel, its annual congress and leadership vote would go ahead as planned this week. But leading figures in the global game, as well as newspapers around the world, said such a stand was untenable after US prosecutors said their investigation had unearthed the "World Cup of fraud". US authorities said nine football officials were among 14 people facing up to 20 years in jail if found guilty in the long-running corruption case involving more than $150 million in bribes. The US investigation said South African officials paid $10 million in bribes to host the 2010 tournament, while Swiss investigators raided FIFA's Zurich headquarters as part of an investigation into the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar. "Sepp Blatter has to go as FIFA president," said Greg Dyke, chairman of the English Football Association, which lost out to Russia for the 2018 tournament amid allegations of bribery in the bidding process. "There is no way of rebuilding trust in FIFA while Sepp Blatter is still there... He either has to go through a resignation, or he has to be outvoted or we have to find a third way," Dyke said.

Blatter meets heads of six FIFA confederations: sources urich: FIFA president Sepp Blatter has met with the heads of FIFA's six confederations in Zurich as a vast corruption scandal continues to engulf world football's governing body, sources confirmed. The president of European governing body UEFA Michel Platini attended along with the heads and representatives of the Asia Football Conderation (AFC), CONMEBOL (South America), CAF (Africa), OFC (Oceania) and CONCACAF (North, Central American and Caribbean). The subject of the meeting, which comes on the eve of Blatter's election bid for a fifth term in office, was not revealed.

I HOPE BLATTER WILL BE DETAINED European federations called for the suspension of the FIFA congress due to start Thursday and Friday's presidential vote, in which Blatter was expected to ease to a fifth term, to be put back by six months. "These events show, once again, that corruption is deeply rooted in FIFA's culture," the European governing body UEFA said in a statement.

CONCACAF president Jeffrey Webb was not present after the FIFA vicepresident was among those arrested on Wednesday morning by Swiss authorities on suspicion of alleged corruption going back 25 years. Seven FIFA officials were detained by Swiss police at the request of United States authorities accused of taking more than USD 150 million in bribes. The United States wants the seven extradited to face trial there. Separately, Swiss investigators raided FIFA's headquarters as part of an investigation into the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar.

Former Brazil star turned senator Romario, a vociferous critic of corruption in the game, said he hoped the investigations would stymie Blatter's hopes of re-election, and called for a "worthy" leader. "I hope this will change something as there is the hope, at least for me, that Blatter may also be detained," he said. The FIFA president was not among those named in the

US indictment. US officials would not be drawn on the possibility of future charges against other senior FIFA figures, and pointedly refused to answer questions about Blatter himself. "It's a significant step but I want to be very clear, this is the beginning of our effort not the end," said Kelly Currie, acting US attorney for the eastern district of New York.

RAMPANT AND DEEPROOTED Warner has denied any wrongdoing. But two of his sons have pleaded guilty to charges related to the US investigation into bribery and kickbacks involving FIFA officials and sports marketing firms. US agents also raided the Miami headquarters of CONCACAF, the continental confederation under FIFA in the United States. Warner used to be its president. The Swiss justice ministry said that six of the seven officials arrested in Zurich were opposing their extradition to the United States. FIFA vice presidents Jeffrey Webb -- the current CONCACAF chief -- and Eugenio Figueredo were among the seven arrested by Zurich police at 6:00 am on Wednesday at the elegant Baur au Lac hotel. All have been held in custody.

Maradona cheers FIFA arrests, warns Blatter next B

UENOS AIRES: Argentine football great Diego Maradona applauded the arrest of top FIFA officials in an anti-corruption sting, and warned that Sepp Blatter, the president of world football's governing body, may be next. Maradona said he was "enjoying" the news of the arrest of seven officials, including two FIFA vice-presidents, in a dawn raid at a luxury hotel in Zurich. They face deportation to the United States on charges of accepting more than $150 million in bribes, and the outspoken former star said Blatter could follow in their footsteps. "Watch out, Blatter may have to go the United States to explain himself. They've been after him for 10 years," he told Buenos Aires radio station La Red. The crackdown came two days before Blatter seeks a fifth term as the head of the multi-billion-dollar organization. Maradona has a long history of scathing attacks on Blatter dating back to the 1986 World Cup in Mexico,

when he protested the decision to schedule matches in the midday heat. He has lobbied against Blatter's bid for a new term as FIFA president, writing in the Telegraph this week that he had become a "dictator for life" and the organization "a playground for the corrupt." "I have been saying this for a long time. They said I was crazy. Today the FBI spoke the truth," he said Wednesday. "We'll have to see if Blatter wins after this. The Americans did an impeccable job," he added. Maradona, 54, was considered the greatest player of his day, playing in four World Cups and leading Argentina to victory in 1986.

Putin condemns US over FIFA probe

M

OSCOW: Russia switched the focus of its tensions with America from Ukraine to the football pitch today with President Vladimir Putin lashing out over the US probe into FIFA. The Kremlin strongman condemned the arrest of seven top FIFA officials, accusing Washington of trying to oust football boss Sepp Blatter after he resisted pressure to stop Russia hosting the 2018 World Cup. "We know about the pressure that has been put on (Blatter) with the aim of banning the holding of the 2018 World Cup in Russia," Putin said in comments re-

leased Thursday. "His general position is that sport and politics should be kept apart." The arrests Wednesday in Zurich two days ahead of a FIFA presidential vote was "clearly an attempt to block the reelection of Blatter," Putin said, alleging the US was trying to "spread its jurisdiction to other countries". Putin has made opposing what he portrays as US meddling in the world a key plank of his foreign policy and uses claims he is checking American expansionism to bolster his popularity at home and deflect all criticism. Relations between Moscow and the West have slumped to their lowest point since the Cold War and some hawkish US senators have called for the 2018 World Cup to be withdrawn from Russia over allegations Moscow is fuelling the separatist conflict in Ukraine.

UEFA rule out FIFA congress Platini confronts Blatter with resign demand and election boycott: Van Praag Z

Z

URICH: UEFA will not boycott FIFA's congress and presidential election in Zurich on Friday, Dutch federation president Michael van Praag said following a meeting of the European governing body. "There will be no UEFA boycott because there are also (apart from the presidential election) important issues to be decided like the Israel/Palestine

question," said van Praag on Thursday. UEFA member Israel needs the European body's backing to avoid a Palestinian bid to have them expelled from FIFA which could be voted on during the congress. Palestine, which has been a FIFA member since 1998, wants the governing body to expel Israel over its restrictions on the movement of Palestinian players.

URICH: UEFA president Michel Platini confronted FIFA leader Sepp Blatter at an emergency meeting of football chiefs and said he called on him to stand down because of corruption scandals engulfing world football. Blatter refused and Platini made a public appeal at a press conference for member nations from around the "I asked him to resign: world to vote against Blatter enough is enough, Sepp. He for the FIFA presidency in an listened to me but he told me election today. it is too late," Platini told a

press conference. "I say these things with tears in my eyes. I don't like it this way. But there are just too many scandals," he added. Other confederation leaders did not back his call, Platini added. Platini said he was "disgusted" and "sickened" by events which led to the arrest of seven FIFA officials at a Zurich hotel yesterday. Blatter is strong favourite to win a fifth term at a FIFA congress tomorrow. But Pla-

tini said he believed the Swiss official can be beaten. "Before the events of this week maybe not," Platini said. "But not now with what has happened. I think that Blatter can be beaten." The UEFA president said a "large majority" of European nations would back challenger Prince Ali bin al Hussein. He called on members from other confederations to also join a revolt against FIFA and support the prince.

COUNTER QUALITY BOWLERS: TENDULKAR

N

EW DELHI: Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar feels that international batsmen should constantly work on their game in order to counter world class bowlers, as he did during his playing days. "It is the duty of a batsman to work on his game as these world class bowlers constantly introduce something new," said Tendulkar. Asked what's the secret of facing Lasith Malinga's toe crushers, Tendulkar smiled and said: "Baal nahin ball ko dekho (Don't watch his mop of hair but watch the ball)." Recollecting his fond memories of Delhi when he visited the city as a player, Tendulkar said: "My first match as India's Test captain was at Feroz Shah Kotla against Australia and we won the match." Another incident related to his 35th Test hundred, surpassing Sunil Gavaskar is also etched in his memory. "That was 2005 and we were playing Sri Lanka. After first Test match in Chennai and before Delhi Test, I was having a power nap in the afternoon. In my dream, I saw myself scoring a hundred at Kotla. And I scored my 35th hundred," Tendulkar said at promotional event in Gurgaon's Cyber hub. He praised the Delhi crowd for its passion for cricket. "Delhi has extreme weathers

like April-May when its extremely hot and then December-January when its cold. But Delhi-ites love their cricket and come out to support us even in IPL (in the month of April, May)," concluded the Mumbai Indians icon.

the G-force, me and Anjali both felt it and we both had a headache for the entire day. It was an experience I remember," Tendulkar narrated the incident today at the inauguration of the Gurgaon centre of 'Smaaash' at premium urban gaming centre. In fact such is his love for speed, that he along with some of his friends have redesigned a go-karting track in Mumbai, which according to him "gives a chance to overtake each other". Tendulkar's fascination for speed has made him actively involved in this virtual gaming project, where one can drive a F1 car, stop a penalty kick by Cristiano Ronaldo or face inswing yorkers from Brett Lee or Muttiah Muralitharan's doosra. One of Tendulkar's favourite games at the sports hub is walking on a virtual plan from one High-Rise building to another. "Once you wear those specially designed glasses and try out the game, you will feel that same level of excitement. Walking on a mere plank between two high-rise buildings. I tried a leap of about six or seven feet and nearly tumbled. Once I played the game, I felt the same kind of headache. So those who want thrill should try this game out," insisted Tendulkar.

Bindra books his berth for Rio N

EW DELHI: India’s only individual Olympic gold medalist, Abhinav Bindra, won India's fourth Rio Olympics quota slot with a sixth place finish in the finals of the 10m Air Rifle event at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup (Rifle/Pistol), being held in the German city of Munich. Abhinav qualified for the finals with a score of 627.5 in the qualification round held earlier in the day. At one point in the finals, Abhinav was leading the eight-man field before settling for sixth place in his pet event. The gold was won by China’s ZHU Qinan, who finished the finals with an eventual score of 206, ahead of Vladimir Maslennikov of Russia in second place, while Oleh Tsarkov of Ukraine won the bronze medal. The men’s 10m Air Rifle had three quota places up for grabs. The two Chinese shooters in the final Zhu Qinan and Yang Haoran had already secured their quota places and so where ineligi-

ble for a quota place here, so was Vitali Bubnovich of Belarus. The Russian, Vladimir Maslennikov was also not eligible for a quota as Russia had already exhausted their two quota places for this event. So when reigning Olympic champion, Alin George Moldoveanu of Romania, was the first to be eliminated in the final, Abhinav secured his quota along with Oleh Tsarkov of Ukraine and Stevan Pletikosic of Russia, who finished third and seventh respectively. Understandably delighted at the developments, Raninder Singh, President of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), said, “I never had any doubts about Abhinav securing a quota place for us sooner or later. He is not an Olympic champion for nothing. He is very clear about his goals and his preparations leading up to big events, is something every professional sportsman in this country should emulate. We have our fingers crossed for him for the Olympics.”

Shreyas Mandlik rocked Baroda with two for 12 and his performance will be closely watched. With a tie on points expected the ‘quotient’ rule seems inevitable. into the last eight. In the boys quarterfinals, Chandigarh's unseeded Calvin Golmei Naithaolin upset sixth seeded Sumit Pal Singh of J&K 6-3 6-3 to enter the semifinals. By S S Ramaswamy umbai: Bangladesh made their foray into Test arena in 2000 against India but in 15 years, have never received invitation from BCCI, something that the current players are looking forward to, insists their limited overs captain Mashrafe Mortaza. Asked about his opinion on playing in India's backyard, Mashrafe made it clear that he wanted to play an international series in India. "Yes, definitely boys really want to play in India. We are looking forward to it. Maybe, at some stage, we will go there and play," Mashrafe told PTI in an interview ahead of India's upcoming tour of Bangladesh. For the record, Bangladesh have played a total of three ODIs on Indian soil only in tournaments like the Asia Cup (1990-91) and Coca-Cola triangular series (1998). Bangladesh's World Cup quarter-final against India was not free of controversy with Rohit Sharma being ruled not-out off a full-toss bowled by Rubel Hossain, which was adjudged as noball by umpire Ian Gould. The lanky Bangaldesh seamer categorically said that he has moved on from that

event. "I don't want to talk about it and want to look ahead," he said when asked about the incident. While terming the Indian batting line-up as dangerous and no single batsman can be pinpointed, Mashrafe sounded respectful of India's pace attack that did really well in the World Cup, save semi-final. "India have a strong batting order. You can't rule out anyone. There is Virat Kolhi, Rohit, Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinjya Rahane is in good form. Mahendra Singh Dhoni has done well in last 6-8 years. So it's difficult to pinpoint one of them. The bowlers, especially the

quicks, have been in good form since the World Cup," Mashrafe said with a note of caution. The senior bowler was also not bothered about DRS not being implemented due to reservations from BCCI. "I am not losing my sleep over DRS. If we can't use, they also can't. It's not a big deal for us." Something that's worrying Mashrafe is the impending monsoon season which could play a spoilsport. "I hope rains keep away and both can play 50 overs, but one can't say as it's rainy season now," said the ODI captain, who has last played Test cricket back in 2009.

P

ARIS: Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki joined the exodus of women's seeds at the French Open on Thursday when the Dane was bundled out in the second round byGermany's Julia Goerges. Wozniacki, seeded five, joined Romanian third seed Simona Halep, last year's runner-up, and number six Eugenie Bouchard of Canada, after a 6-4 7-6(4) defeat on a blustery Phillipe Chatrier court. Goerges, who has fallen to 72 in the rankings after rising into the top 20 in 2012, battled back from a break behind to clinch the opening set and then broke Wozniacki's serve at 5-5 in the second, only to falter when serving for the match. She played a solid tiebreaker though to send Wozniacki spinning to a second successive early defeat at Roland Garros after she fell in the first round last year. Sara Errani, the runner-up in 2012, avoided any mishaps though as the Italian beat Carina Witthoeft of Germany 6-4 7-6(4).

Germany's Julia Goerges returns the ball to Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki during their second round match of the French Open tennis tournament at the Roland Garros stadium on Thursday in Paris. Georges won 6-4, 7-6. The men's draw has been relatively free of high-profile casualties so far and Croatian ninth seed Marin Cilic continued the trend with an easy 76(3) 6-1 6-1 defeat of Italian qualifier Andrea Arnaboldi to move into the third round.

Spain's Rafael Nadal serves the ball to compatriot Nicolas Almagro during their second round match of the French Open tennis tournament at the Roland Garros stadium on Thursday in Paris.

SOLID NADAL DISMISSES ALMAGRO TO REACH ROUND THREE Rafa Nadal got his usual confidence boost from Nicolas Almagro at Roland Garros, reaching the third round with a 6-4 6-3 6-1 victory -- his fourth without dropping a set against his Spanish compatriot on the Paris clay.

Nadal, chasing a record-extending 10th title here, was tested by Almagro, who slumped to 154th in the rankings after a foot injury, but the Mallorcan had just too much strength. The 28-year-old arrived in Paris on the back of his worst season on European clay but he is beginning to look a little more like his old self.He tightened his game every time Almagro threatened, seeing off six of seven break points and wrapped up victory when he forced his opponent to return a powerful forehand wide on the first match point. Sixth seed Nadal, who now has a 68-1 French Open record, will face either Russian Andrey Kuznetsov or Austrian Juergen Melzer, his semi-final victim in 2010, in the next round. "I played a very good match, very solid, I'm happy to be back on court Philippe Chatrier," Nadal told a courtside interviewer in French.

England expect more from Stokes L

EEDS: Ben Stokes will find himself the centre of attention when England face his native New Zealand in the second Test at Headingley on Friday. His 85-ball hundred, the fastest Test century ever scored at Lord's in terms of balls faced, played a key role in turning the tide of the series opener, which England won by 124 runs to go 1-0 up in the two-match contest on Monday. The 23-year-old had already helped rescue England from the depths of 30 for four in their first innings by making 92 while adding 161 with Joe Root (98). And, just for good measure, the Durham man, who came to England with his family as a 12-year-old, took three for 38 on Monday's final day, including the wickets of danger man Kane Williamson and New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum in successive balls. But Root, like Stokes one of several young players who shone for England at Lord's including debutant fast bowler Mark Wood, is confident the all-rounder won't get carried away with the hype that followed his second Test century, which came some 18 months after his first, in Perth. "He will be fine," said Root of Stokes. "When he is batting, he is a free spirit; he goes and plays his shots and puts sides under pressure. "Even in times of struggle, when we are 30 for four, he came out and put them on the back foot," vice-captain Root added. "It will not work every time and could have looked slightly reckless if it didn't come off. "The key for him and the rest of us now is to make sure it is not a one-off and go on and do it again this week." The first Test was notable too for a marathon innings of 162 by England captain

England captain Alastair Cook puts on his pads during nets, the day before the second Test match between England and New Zealand at Headingley cricket ground in Leeds on Thursday. Alastair Cook that left the opener just 32 runs shy of overtaking Essex mentor Graham Gooch's England Test runs record of 8,900. So it was no surprise that new England coach Trevor Bayliss, who will take over in time for the Ashes, was heartened by what he had seen. "I've been staying up late into the night watching the last Test at Lord's to do some research and it's great to see," said the Australian. "I'd much rather come into working with a team that's on a high." For New Zealand, defeat was tough to take as so many of their players had set their hearts on becoming just the second Black Caps side, after the 1999 team, to win a Test at Lord's. They also did many of the things that would normally secure a victory, scoring more than 700 runs in the match and taking 20 wickets.

Chanderpaul deserves a send Saina is lone Indian to advance at Australian Open off with dignity & respect: Lara S

K

INGSTON: West Indies batting legend Brian Lara has severely criticised the Cricket Board's (WICB) move to axe Shivnarine Chanderpaul from the national team and has called for an honourary send-off to the veteran batsman by including him in two-Test home series against Australia. The selectors, led by former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd, left out 40-yearold Chanderpaul from the 12-member squad for the first Test against Australia, citing lack of form of the left-handed batsman over

his last 11 innings, in which he averaged only 16. But Lara feels the decision was just another example of the way the WICB disrespects its players. "This has nothing to do with numbers or averages. What are they saying that Chanderpaul was given the last 11 innings to get the desired number of runs to break a record? This has absolutely nothing to do with runs or numbers. It has to do with respect and Chanderpaul has earned the right to say goodbye in an acceptable way," he said.

YDNEY: Ace shuttler Saina Nehwal notched up a hardfought three-game win over China's Sun Yu to emerge as the lone Indian survivor in Australian Open Super Series badminton tournament, here today. World No. 1 Saina continued her rampaging run in world badminton and staved off a challenge from Sun, ranked 9th, 21-19 19-21 21-14 in a match that lasted an hour and 18 minutes in the women's singles competition. The Olympic bronze medallist will next take on two-time All England champion Shixian Wang, against whom Saina has a close 6-5 record in 11 meetings. However, it was curtains for World No. 4 Kidambi Srikanth

and 2010 Commonwealth Games champion pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa today. Fourth seed Srikanth squandered a first-game advantage to go down fighting to

China's Tian Houwei 21-18 1721 13-21 in men's singles, Jwala and Ashwini lost to fourth seeded Indonesian pair of Nitya Krishinda Maheswari and Greysia Polii 14-21 10-21 in a women's doubles match.

Saina, who had beaten Sun thrice in the last four meetings, came out with a wellthought strategy as she broke off at 5-5 and entered the interval with a 11-6 lead. Sun played better after the interval to slowly narrow the gap before clawing back at 1818, but a determined Saina zoomed ahead to pocket the opening game. The Indian could have wrapped up the match in the second game itself as she had a huge six-point lead at 13-7 but Sun almost snatched the lead away after levelling the score at 13-13. An alert Saina held her nerves and moved to 18-15 but she could not stop a fighting Sun, who roared back into the contest with a three-point burst from 18-19 behind.
