haratiya Janata Party (BJP) state legislature party (BJLP) yesterday picked its youngest fourthtime legislator from Nagpur South-West Devendra Fadnavis (44) as its legislative party leader, its Chief Minister designate. Last minute sulking from senior party leaders Eknath Khadse and Sudhir Mungantiwar was firmly set aside as the two along with Pankaja Munde-Palwe were asked to propose and second the
name of Fadnavis as the BJPLP leader. Fadnavis is all set to become the second youngest chief minister of Maharashtra on October 31. The youngest earlier was Sharad Pawar (then 38) on July 24, 1978 who headed the then Progressive Democratic Front (PDF) government. Soon after his election as the Chief Minister designate (BJLP leader), Fadnavis accompanied by Vinod Tawde, Rajeev Pratap Rudy, RPI-A leader MP Ramdas Athawale and others went to Raj Bhavan to submit the letter of
Fadnavis being elected as the BJPLP leader and staking claim to form the next government. Sources disclosed that the BJP at present claims support of 135 MLAs. Mahayuti allies Rashtriya Samaj Paksha (RSP) leader Mahadev Jankar, Shetkari Sanghatna leader Sadabhau Khot, Shiv Sangram leader Vinayak Mete besides Athawale were closeted with Rajnath Singh. Speaking further, he said that he will be
taking cue from the Modi government and keep it “slim and trim”. He also disclosed that some ministries which were split by the previous Congress-NCP led government will be merged. Replying to queries over portfolio allocation, he said that the issue will depend on how soon the Shiv Sena joins the government. Meanwhile, senior Shiv Sena leaders Continued on pg 2 «

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar disclosed that the party leadership had chosen Fadnavis who is young, and has a clean image. Home minister Rajnath Singh and party general secretary J P Nadda later met the party legislators to know their views. It was a short duration affair at the Vidhan Bhavan where Rajnath Singh in his introductory speech said that party legislators had to take forward the party which had been brought to this level by senior party leaders Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L K Advani. THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING DEVENDRA FADNAVIS By Bharat Kumar Raut
A
s far as the Fadnavises are concerned, the circle is completed with the election of their youngest member to become the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) legislative unit, and thus the future Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The journey of Fadnavises in the political arena started with Devendra's father Gangadhar Fadnavis, an avid politician and loyal RSS sevak, elevated to the post of Member of Legislative Council. Gangadhar-pant, as he was called, having a handsome personality and good height, was known as a fiery orator of the then Jana Sangh. His many speeches were articulate, elegant and humourous. However his untimely death made way for Nitin Gadkari (now the Union Minister) to come into the Legislative Council from the Nagpur Graduates' constituency seat, which had fallen vacant due to his death. Devendra was only 17 years old then and was actively involved in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the RSS. After his father's death and after completing his law degree, Devendra decided to enter active politics. At the tender age of 23, Devendra became a member of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation and within four years became the Mayor of Nagpur, one of the youngest to assume the position. During that time, there existed the practice of mayor-in-council in which the mayor of the city used to have many executive powers. Devendra successfully completed his term as Mayor and became Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) in 1991. He won the seat for two consecutive terms after which the constituency split, leading Devendra to work in a different constituency. However his popularity was such that he returned twice from the other constituency as well. He can easily be described as the youngest and most popular face of the BJP in the Vidharba region. As a man without a blot on his character, with regards to corruption and his personal life, Devendra was elevated to the post of president of the party's state unit two years ago. He took this opportunity as a challenge, to enhance the influence of BJP all over the state, particularly in the Vidarbha region. His relentless efforts yielded good fruits and the BJP-SS alliance won all 10 seats in the Lok Sabha and 44 seats for BJP alone in the Assembly elections. Now as the CM of Maharashtra, Devendra will have to face more challenges than any of the CMs so far. The challenges are administrative and political. Maharashtra is reeling under a bad fallout of the economy and has the heavy burden of overdrafts and debts. Devendra will have to arrest the sliding of the state economy and take it to the peak of its lost glory. Apart from economics, the socio-cultural fabric of the state is also in an elaborated situation.
The unabated suicides of farmers, particularly in the Vidarbha season, the growing atrocities on women in urban and rural areas, and atrocities against the downtrodden, have given a bad name to the state. Devendra will have to take up these issues on priority. The industrial scenario is also in a bad shape. Many industries which flourished in Maharashtra so far are finding their way out. The nearby states of Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh (including Telangana), and Karnataka have been attracting engineering and IT industries from Maharashtra. This has resulted in growing unemployment among the educated in the state. The challenge before the new government would be to stop the exodus of industries from Maharashtra for which he will have to address the issues of power shortage, accelerating prices of land, and huge corruption in public life. Apart from administrative challenges, the bigger challenge that Devendra would be facing is in the arena of political instability. BJP, though having emerged as the single largest party, has fallen short of achieving the magic figure of 144 with a big distance. As a result, it is forced to bank on support from
other parties. With the Shiv Sena not keeping good relations with the BJP, and with the NCP and Congress on the other side of the fence, Devendra and his party will have to play smart games to muster the initial support required to win the vote of confidence and later to provide a stable government. Within the BJP also, Devendra will have to quell many seniors who were angling to achieve the top position. Leaders like Eknath Khadse, Sudhir Mungantiwar, Vinod Tawde, and the all-powerful Nitin Gadkari will have to be tackled with smooth hands. Surely his success will depend on how he tackles these issues. On the other hand, Devendra has some advantages also. With the Congress totally demoralised and its hopeless number in the House, and the NCP declaring unilateral support from outside, the wind has been taken out of the Shiv Sena's sails. It will be worth watching what could be the hidden conditions of the NCP in its “unconditional” support to the government. Will it ask to go slow on the charges of alleged corruption against the NCP ministers in the erstwhile government, and will Devendra oblige to this demand? His decision is going to decide his success and effectiveness as the head of the state.

Rats on board
A recent study showed that the number of rats in Mumbai far exceeds the number of human beings, ie, more than 12 million people live in the city. The case is
not very different in other metro cities in India. These rodents have managed to infiltrate the strangest places in our lives. A few months ago, a passenger flight was reportedly grounded when members of staff spotted rats running around the cabin. Air India flight AI021 was travelling to New Delhi when the staff saw scores of rats running around. After landing safely at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Dehli, passengers disembarked and the flight was immediately taken out of
service. It then had to be taken to a bay for fumigation to eliminate all the rats on board. A senior commander said the sighting of just a single rat means the plane has to be fumigated immediately as they can pose a serious risk to the flight. Rats on board an aircraft can lead to a catastrophe if they start chewing up electric wires of a fly by wire plane. If that happens, pilots will have no control on any system on board leading to a disaster. So how did they find their way in? Rats often access aircraft by following large storage cases in which food trays are kept. The catering vans are like a home for them as food keeps getting dropped. Rats get on the high lifts that take those storage cases to aircraft and then remain there. Apparently this happens across the world.
20 Keralites on top in the Gulf
Kerala, god's own country, is known for many reasons – its 100 per cent literacy rate, copious amounts of alcohol consumed, rich culture, relatives in the Gulf, etc. So it comes as no surprise that as many as 20 entrepreneurs and professionals from Kerala have been named in the annual list of 100
powerful Indians in the Gulf, with Keralites in the top two positions. The 'Indian Power List', published by business magazine 'Arabian Business', has picked six Keralites among the top 20. Managing director of the Lulu Group, Yusuff Ali MA, has retained his top position on the list for the fifth consecutive year, while Ravi Pillai, chairman of RP Group of Companies, is ranked second for successfully building a global business network that employs over 80,000 people. In 1970 trade between India and the UAE was worth US $80 million a year. By 2013, the figure had reached US $44 billion. Thanks to the work of these 100 people featuring in the magazine’s list, the number seems to be only heading nortth, and the Malayalees are contributing big time.

Somaiya visits Govandi 12-year-old rape and murder: Accused Assures the people that the Shivaji Nagar area will be free of crime and drug menace and promises that peace will be order of the day

Local MP Kirit Somiaya visits Shivaji Nagar police station to take stock of the understaffed station which provides service to a humungous population.

F
ollowing huge protest and shutdown in Govandi over the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl, local MP Kirit Somaiya visited Shivaji Nagar police station and met with senior police officers to inquire about leads to catch the alleged rapists. Even after a lapse of 48 hours, Shivaji Nagar police could not track the whereabouts of culprits who raped, murdered and dumped the 12-year-old victim’s body in a dustbin near old Shivaji Nagar police station. Somaiya met DCP (Zone-VI) Sangramsingh Nishandar, ACP Bhimdeo Rathod and senior PI of Shivaji Nagar police station Dhanjay Gaikwad. Also present was Mohammed Hussain Khan, BJP’s vice president for Mumbai city. Hussain Khan apprised Kirit Somaiya about the grim situation that the Shivaji Nagar-Bainganwadi populace is facing due to lack of a proper police beat chowki in the area. The new Shivaji Nagar police station is located at about 1 to 1.5 km from Indian Oil Nagar now. According to Khan areas like Sanjay Nagar, Padma Nagar and Rafique Nagar that come under Shivaji Nagar police station do not have police beat chowkis and those which existed before are now closed down. Officially there are only five beat chowkis, which are insufficient. Patrolling is sparse and hence criminals thrive in these slum areas. Shamim Yusuf Khan, a lady resident of Indian Oil Nagar, demanded
that the old Shivaji Nagar police chowki where SRPF is now stationed should be shifted from there and a full-fledged police beat chowki should start functioning as the spot is centrally located. “Some cigarette stall owners sell narcotics themselves,” she said. “Life here for our families, wives and daughters has become impossible. The only way out is a merciless crackdown on drug peddlers.” When Somaiya asked DCP Nishandar about the closing down of beat chowkis at many slum pockets of Shivaji Nagar, the DCP said, “Old beat chowkis that were closed down were illegal. They did not have electricity, water and bathroom facilities. The total strength of the Shivaji Nagar police is 250, which includes officers and constabulary. That is hugely insufficient for a population of over 12 lakhs in the six square km area of Shivaji Nagar. But they are doing their best to maintain law and order under its jurisdiction.” Meanwhile, the DCP and his team are leaving no stone unturned to catch the alleged rape and murder accused in this case. Upon patiently hearing the DCP’s dilemma, Somaiya asked him to prepare a note mentioning all the points and problems that the Shivaji Nagar police is facing so that he can inform the incumbent home minster of the state and also the Mumbai Police Commissioner. Somaiya assured the people that the Shivaji Nagar area will be free of crime and drug menace and promised that peace will be order of the day.
he man arrested for the alleged rape and murder of a 12-yearold girl is strongly suspected to be a necrophiliac. “This can be said as the 30-year-old accused, Kasim Khan, confessed that he didn't have any intention of raping the girl. But noticing that the girl had stopped breathing and would not resist him in any way, he raped her before wrapping the body in a mat and then threw it in the dustbin,” said a highly placed crime branch officer. On Tuesday morning, the police nabbed Khan from Govandi for raping and murdering the 12-yearold girl from the same area. The girl was raped and killed between 4 pm and 5 pm on Saturday, said the police. Kasim is a taylor by profession. On Saturday the girl had gone to give an order for him to stich a pouch for her grandfather from a piece of cloth that she had brought with her, said the police. “Khan was busy in some work and when the girl started throwing tantrums for delaying in taking her order, the accused slapped her and the girl fell on floor. Noticing that the girl had
Accused participated in morcha against police
Kasim Khan, who has been accused of raping and murdering the 12-year-old girl, had actively participated in Monday's morcha against the police's inaction to arrest the murderer-rapist even after 24 hours had passed. The police learnt about Khan's participation in Morcha when they had visited his shop in Govandi, just as they were inquiring with several tailors from the area with regard to the rape case. “When the cops visited Khan's shop, it was closed and a nearby shop owner, who resides inside the shop itself, had told police that Khan had gone to the morcha against Shivaji Nagar police station,” said Shripad Kale, senior inspector of Unit VI department of crime branch.
Residents of Govandi area protest outside Shivaji Nagar police station on Monday against the delay in arresting the accused who had raped and killed the girl on Saturday last. stopped breathing, the accused pulled her inside the shop and raped her,” said DCP (Zone VI) Sangramsingh Nishandar, who was personally monitoring the probe. Khan was arrested through the joint efforts of the police personnel from Shivaji Nagar police station as well as crime branch.
Piece of cloth helps nab Khan The little girl's body was discovered by the police on Sunday in a dustbin in the Bainganwadi area of Govandi. The body was wrapped in a mat, which also had some pieces of waste cloth pieces, which are usually seen in tailor's shops. With this clue, the police suspected that culprit was either a tai-
lor himself or had gathered clothes from a tailor's shop. One of the pieces had the text 'Hakeem Sahab' written on it. Considering this, sleuths from the crime branch started inquiring with all the tailors in the Govandi area about the ready-made cloth piece, which was used by the tailor to make shirts. The cops then zeroed in on Kasim's shop and after going through the register it was found that the bill number 168 had the same cloth attached to it. Interrogation of Khan led the police to learn that a week ago a customer had given Khan an order to stitch a shirt from the cloth piece that he had brought. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

According to the police, the incident occurred at around 2 pm on Monday when Karthik had gone to Juhu beach along with his friends and told his parents that he would return by 5pm. Karthik went inside the water along with his other friends for a swim but due to high tide he got pulled inside

The police was informed about the incident and soon life guards and fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot. We got a call from the locals and Karthik’s father was called to identify the body,” said Thakre.
A police officer from Santacruz police station said, “The two were standing outside a store located on the roadside near the busy junction. According to by-
standers, a speeding Scorpio suddenly rammed into them. It is still not clear from which direction the vehicle came and where it was headed. The car came to a halt after hitting them.” Both men were caught off guard and were thrown in different directions. It is recommended to adhere to specific ayurvedic therapies and herbs to control the disease symptoms or to prevent it. Ayurvedic physician and botanist, Acharya Balkrishna said, “One in eight women suffer from breast cancer worldwide and numbers are growing at a fast pace due to changing lifestyle and preferences. A well balanced diet, proper daily routine and adoption of ayurvedic therapies help in managing the disease effectively. Medita-

Holistic treatment using medicinal herbs, Yoga and medicines are recommended to every patient undergoing healing from ayurvedic solution.” “Since the medieval times, garlic is used as a very helpful herb to cure several diseases due to its medicinal properties. Inclusion of supportive herbs and spices in one’s diet nourishes the body and flushes out the cancerous cells and detoxify the body. Adopting a healthy and disciplined lifestyle, intake of green tea, products containing vitamin D and other herbs like fenugreek seeds, broccoli, tulsi, soya are also proved to be helpful in improving the immunity of the body”, he added. Dr Ketan Mahajan, Sr Physician, Patanjali Yogpeeth said, “It is heart wrenching for a woman to realise the fact that, this disease is hereditary too. Besides being physical impairment of the patient, it is an extremely emotional trauma too that a patient usually undergoes. Therefore, we at Patanjali urge every woman to embrace treatment such as yoga and meditation for the overall wellbeing of mind, body and soul. Coupled with physical exercises, playing leisure games and doing breathing exercises, it is advisable for a person who is more prone to contract the disease that she must give up the ingestion of toxic substances like coffee, alcohol and fast food. Herbs like brahmi, geloe, honey, allovera, multhi and others helps in regeneration of damaged cells. MSRTC buses safe for travel, claim officials Proper training, on a regular basis is given to drivers and new buses are added to the fleet every day
By Aroosa Ahmed
A
lmost a year after a report by the Road and Transport Ministry revealed that Maharashtra state run transport buses in the city are considered the most unsafe mode of transport and tops the accidents' list, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has taken steps for the improvement and safety of the passengers and drivers of the buses. The recent accidents, one involving the MSRTC bus which fell 50 feet into a gorge in Lonavala killing three people including the driver and another MSRTC bus met with an accident last week in Thane, injuring seven people, has generated a big question mark whether travelling by the MSRTC buses are safe. The 2013 report further revealed that on an average, more than one person dies every day in an accident involving the MSRTC buses. The ADC spoke to MSRTC officials and they said that every day five new buses are added to the MSRTC fleet, “We have our own garage where the buses are constructed, the garages are located in Pune, Nagpur and Aurangabad. Every day we add five new buses to the fleet. However if the buses travel more than 500 km daily, they tend to wear off fast.”
Speaking about the drivers and training, the official said, “A driver has to have five years of experience and a round-the-clock training is done for 45 days. We also hold periodic training sessions every three and six months and each of our bus stops have stimulators which guide the drivers to their periodic training sessions. After 45 years of age, the driver goes through medical test every year.” Speaking about the compensation which the MSRTC gives after the accident, the official said, “Rupees 1.5 lakh is given as a compensation for any death that takes place. However, for the drivers the MSRTC deposits money with the ministry of labour and they give it to the driver and conductor or their families, if the driver or the conductor dies in the accident, one of the members of the bereaved family is given a job.” Revealing about buses to be introduced in the Shivneri model, he added, “Currently there are 110 buses under the Shivneri brand and additional 60 buses which will be added in two to three months.” Sandeep Patil (40), MSRTC bus driver, said: “There are mostly trained drivers in the team. However, working for continuous hours, due to the lack of drivers it gets stressful at times and such horrific incidents happen.”

t looks like the death of Dr Shruti Khobragade, a resident doctor at the BMCrun KEM hospital, because of dengue, has shaken the doctors and the authorities of the hospital have been jolted and forced to look into cleanliness of its premises and its hostel, with more seriousness. While Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has written a letter to the Dean, Dr Shubhangi Parkar with a few demands that would benefit doctors at the hospitals and the patients as well, the hospital had a cleanliness drive and fumigation was done on Wednesday. “Cleanliness is a matter of concern in the hospital and the hostel. There are leakages everywhere because the
plumbing work has gone for a toss. We understand that renovation is going on and we are not against renovation. But it is important that necessary precautions are taken so that nobody's health is affected due to the renovation activities. Be it patients or doctors,” said Dr Mandar Baviskar, president, Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), KEM. “So we (MARD) have submitted a written list of demands where we have asked for five beds to be reserved specially for doctors in case they fall sick and need to get admitted. This is important because KEM is always overloaded with patients and at times, it becomes difficult to get a bed for a doctor who needs admission. The second demand is that cleanliness

More accused file pleas in TADA court Five of the accused in the 1993 serial blasts case filed an application in the TADA court claiming that 42 mobiles were found in Arthur Rd jail and not four as reported by the police By Santia Dudi

CLEANSE THE PLANET EARTH... Under the auspices of Saint Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Ji, a unique movement in order to cleanse the earth was initiated by Dera Sacha Sauda, under the banner ‘Cleanse the Planet Earth, to Remove Disease and Curse’, as a part of 'Swacch Bharat Abhiyan', the campaign was held at Mantralaya on Tuesday.
should be maintained inside as well in the premises of the hospital and the hostel. All the leakages should be repaired at the earliest as these leaking pipes and stagnant water bodies become breeding spots for mosquitoes,” Dr Baviskar added. On Wednesday, a meeting was held between the dean, a few engineers and a few representatives from MARD and these issues of concern were discussed, informed Dr Baviskar. “We will follow up on these demands to make sure steps are taken at the earliest,” said Dr Baviskar. Statistics from the BMC health department say that till the fourth week of October this year (up till October 26), there have been 174 cases of dengue while in 2013, the whole of October had 189 cases of dengue.
he trend of filing applications at the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act TADA court continued on Tuesday also when the five accused of 1993 Mumbai serial blasts filed an application about being tortured by the police. The Arthur road jail police found four mobiles from the jail on October 11, but the accused applicants claimed that actually 42 mobiles were found and also one mobile was found from the Anda cell from Abu Jindal. They filed an application in the TADA court almost 10 days ago informing the court about it. The applicants claim that 42 mobile phones and some cash was found from the accused of 7/11 local train blasts case, Aurangabad arms haul case and Indian Mujahideen
members. On Tuesday the applicants filed another application in the court informing the court that the police at Arthur road jail is torturing them for filing the application and forcing them to withdraw the same. Sources told ADC that the police which came into the scene indirectly forced the accused of 1993 blasts to withdraw the application. They stopped the basic amenities of the accused ordered by the court as a result. Sources claim that the police also threatened to transfer the applicants to another jail.
In the application filed on Tuesday the applicants mention their concern regarding the threat from the police. Earlier Firoz Khan, one of the accused in the 1993 blasts case filed a no-confidence application against his lawyer advocate Haider Mooman and the TADA judge G A Sanap. He was ordered by the court to look for a new advocate. On Tuesday he informed the court that he found a new advocate. Firoz was accused of landing RDX and arms in the city before 1993 blasts.

he infamous Nehru Nagar rape and murder case witnessed an important development on Tuesday when the prosecution moved the trial court seeking to request the Bombay High Court to give the copy of the letter written by the victim's father. Public prosecutor told the
court that the victim's father was promised Rs five lakh or a flat in return of filing a writ petition in the Bombay High Court requesting the court to transfer the case to CBI for a proper investigation. Victim's father signed the application without knowing the contents of the petition. The petition was filed to sabotage the investigation.
Advocate Solkar told ADC, “If such an offer was made to the father of the victim why did the prosecution keep quiet for such a long time? Now suddenly after four years they are informing the court about this.” On June 19, 2010 the residents of Nehru Nagar's Vatsalatai Nagar slum complained about a foul smell coming from a vacant
shanty. The body of an eightyear-old girl was found. The girl had gone missing on June 5. Medical reports confirmed rape. Javed Sheikh, employee of a local cable operator was arrested on July 1, 2010. A 325 page charge sheet was filed. It comprises statements of 45 witnesses, DNA reports, medical reports and forensic reports.

Ponder awhile… “The basis of our political system is the right of the people to make and to alter their constitutions of government.” — George Washington
BJP rule begins with choice of CM M
r. D. Fadnavis appears to be the final choice as the Maharashtra’s chief minister. Another leader who did not like to be in Delhi — Mr. Gadkari — and who tried to be Maharashtra’s CM was evidently not acceptable to the leaders. There were however some Gadkari’s supporters who were left with no choice but to give up when ‘influential’ leaders put their weight behind Mr. Fadnavis. For instance, the RSS had given its total approval for the choice of Mr. Fadnavis. The Sangh’s strong recommendation had a good effect. The RSS is being increasingly seen as having a big voice in the affairs of the BJP. It is playing an important part. RSS boss Bhagwat is meeting several leaders: they run to him whenever they find it difficult to deal with some problem. The BJP leaders are in a way being, to some extent, guided by his voice. Denial of any RSS role in the affairs of the party is not convincing. Mr. Gadkari also went to Bhagwat, but possibly he went a bit too late. The attempt to be CM by Gadkari was a belated exercise. What has become clear is that the Shiv Sena has permanently lost a chance to govern Maharashtra. It must be pointed out that Mr. Uddhav Thackeray would have been better off if he had not quarrelled with the BJP over seat sharing in the elections. And he underestimated the huge Modi wave that had swept across Maharashtra.

K Advani famously mocked journalists after Indira Gandhi’s Emergency, “You were asked to bend but you crawled.’’ Several decades later, Narendra Modi’s first press interaction after becoming prime minister revealed that not much has changed in the intervening years. The luncheon meet with Modi, billed as Diwali Milan, was a revelation of the craven manner in which journalists are drawn to power. Even as Modi, cool as a cucumber in a candy pink kurta and jacket combo, declined to answer questions or say anything of consequence, journos seemed not to care. They were only interested in getting themselves photographed with the new rock star of Indian politics. Whether senior or junior, editor or reporter, they fell over each other to click selfies with him. Even those who have built up formidable reputations as Modi’s most strident critics during and after the 2002 riots pushed and shoved their way to get up close and take a selfie. Some journalists were so kicked that they uploaded their selfies with Modi on various social media sites right then and there. The rush to get an invitation to the lunch was mindboggling. The BJP traditionally hosts a Diwali Milan for correspondents on the beat. This year, Amit Shah had hinted that he would get the PM across to meet those covering the BJP. Once word got out, senior leaders were flooded with phone calls from journos of every description and status, all demanding that they too be included in this power lunch. This was sycophancy of the cringing kind. And if Modi looked smug and complacent as he went around greeting journos personally, he had every right to be. There was no greater vindication of his belief that the media doesn’t matter. It will come crawling once you’ve reached the pinnacle of power.

The situation is so dangerous, injustice is so widespread, the danger is so close. In this kind of situation, if we panic, things will only become worse. We need to remain calm, to see clearly. Meditation is to be aware, and to try to help. I like to use the example of a small boat crossing the Gulf of Siam. In Vietnam, there are many people, called boat people, who leave the country in small boats. Often the boats are caught in rough seas or storms, the people may panic, and boats can sink. But if even one person aboard can remain calm, lucid, knowing what to do and what not to do, he or she can help the boat survive. His or her expression -face, voice- communicates clarity and calmness, and pee pie have trust in that person. They will listen to what he or she says. One such person can save the lives of many. Mumbai gears up for swearing-in ceremony UNPRECEDENTED swearing-in ceremony of the Chief Minister and his cabinet of the Maharashtra Legislative Council at the Wankhede stadium comes as a shock and is in bad taste. This is nothing but a gimmick and popularity stunt apart from being wasteful expenditure of public money when there is the Vidhan Bhavan available for such events or it could have been held in some public hall to save costs and also from the security angle. Opening the world class Wankhede Stadium for public events has sent a wrong signal and next could be political rallies, marriage functions and other events here which would damage the ground big time and that would be sad. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a no nonsense leader and a man of vision who aims to check corruption. Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan IT is truly sad that a good actor like Shah Rukh Khan has allowed himself to become self-centered and exhibit a very high level of egotism. Anti Sena Gujaratis? LIKE all the Gujaratis, I was also shocked to know that according to the Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP, and also the editor of SS’s mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ Sanjay Raut, Gujaratis are anti-SS. He said so just because his party lost three seats from Goregaon, Dahisar and Colaba from Mumbai in the recent state Assembly polls. SS had contested from 286 seats from the entire Maharashtra (out of 288 seats). But SS could win only 63 seats. This is nearly 22.02 per cent victory, which is less than even 25 per cent. Is this percentage low because Gujaratis are ‘anti-Shiv Sena'? The question is, why didn’t all 100 per cent Marathi voters from entire Maharashtra, including from Thane, Pune and Vidarbha vote for Shiv Sena? If respected Balasaheb Thackeray would have been alive today, he would have not tolerated such thoughtless statement at all. He had lots of foresight, unlike the present SS leaders. Such direct or indirect statements may force Gujaratis to shift their industries and businesses from Mumbai. The SS leaders must develop foresight solely in the public interest. — Hansraj Bhat, Borivali
Imaging India THE PM has initiated several measures that have raised the stature of India. His tough attitude to talks with Pakistan and the riposte to cross border firing have set the trend. However, there is an issue that needs to be tackled – the treatment towards Indians by foreign officialdom. However, even before that comes, the treatment and behavior to Indians by our own consular staff should be noted. It is because our own country’s consular staff treats us in a casual and ‘don’t care a damn’ attitude that other countries also adopt the same attitude. It is time that our staff is sensitised in treating our citizens. - T R Ramaswami, Kandivali
Stop the mockery IT is very painful and agonising to note that a partner of the Shiv Sena for the last 25 years is leaving no stone unturned in mocking the Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray. I have been observing the statements of some BJP MLAs, who are ready to vituperate Uddhav Thackeray in a sarcastic manner. Had Balasaheb been living today, would they have dared to even raise an eyebrow against Uddhav? Our late strongman from the BJP Gopinath Munde’s daughter Pankaja Munde was given a free hand to stand without any opposition from the Shiv Sena. As Uddhav had said, “She is my sister and I will not field any candidate against her.” This is known as true audacity which some BJP MLAs should learn from Uddhav Thackeray. Agreeing that there maybe a Modi wave, but such waves don’t last long. As it is seen in our Indian politics, after the barbaric massacre of our late Iron lady (Indira Gandhi), there was a sympathy wave and the Congress topped and won majority of the seats. The same attends after the emergency when Janta Party came to power, wiping out the Congress from majority of the states.

And so she deserves all encouragement and appreciation without denouncing her unnecessarily as a 'Pakistani Bahu'. She is very much a Hyderabadi and she has been proudly declaring so. Indian women's tennis needs her and she will go a long way with her dedication and talent. — Dr V Subramanyan, Thane

Peng of China had no clue and lost the tie in one hour. Sania also reached the US open semis with Cara earlier this season and play as a team very well. In their last match together, Cara Black and Sania Mirza cruised to the doubles title at the WTA Finals with an authoritative 6-1, 6-0 win over defending champions Peng Shuai and Hsieh Su-Wei at Singapore. For Black, it was the third time she had won the doubles crown at the WTA Finals after 2007 and 2008 partnering Liezl Huber, while for Mirza it was her first victory at the season-ending championships. It was a surprisingly one-sided final, given Peng and Hsieh entered the match with a 12-0 record in doubles finals, including this year's French Open and Wimbledon in 2013, while Black and Mirza had a tough road to the final. The Zimbabwe-India pairing saved one set point in their quarter-final victory and staged a remarkable comeback in the semi-final against Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik, coming from 9-6 down in the super tiebreak to win it, saving three match points. — C K Subramaniam, Sanpada

he Movember Movement is set to reach Mumbai. The Cancer Aid & Research Foundation (CARF) is supporting this public health initiative which is an international movement that has raised USD 574 million to date and funded over 800 programmes across 21 countries and has helped save and improve the lives of men af-
fected by prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health issues. For the uninitiated, this movement, which began in Australia in 2003, is a fun way to spread awareness about serious health issues concerning men like prostate cancer and testicular cancer, where men have to grow a moustache and groom it well for the entire month of November as a sign of support
to the cause of spreading awareness. Movember got its name from 'MO'ustache and No'VEMBER'. Mo is also an Australian slang for moustache. Participating men, who are referred to as Mo bros, also have to talk about these diseases and carry on conversations with family and friends about them. For these men, their moustache is the ribbon for this cause. It's a symbol of support. W o m e n , called Mo Sistas, too can do their bit by encouraging the men they know, to be a part of this initiative. The initiative starts with the men taking a photograph of theirs in a clean shaven avatar and then when the month of November
ends, they should be sporting a well-groomed moustache where goatees, beards or fake moustaches are a strict no no. Registrations are going to be on till October 31 and till now, CARF has got around 20 to 25 registrations and on December 1, after the initiative finishes, CARF will give the best groomed moustache an award in the form of a gift.

DEGREES ARE HERE TO SLAY Continued from pg 13 «
a marketing professional and a final-year MBA student, “Freshers join as blank slates. They may lack essential practical experience and the management skills you get in an MBA programme hands-on management skills required in a practical working environment but they still have the education qualification that will guarantee them far better prospects in the company as compared to someone who has learnt on-the- job.” Today the value of a post-graduate degree is as important or maybe more important than work experience. Students who opt for an MBA normally get picked up through campus placements itself. The MBA whether a normal or executive MBA promises to give you a promised edge and prepares you to take on managerial roles, which happens to be where all the money is. If you aren't opting for an MBA then a simple Masters gives you a post-graduate degree which in today's time is a must. These are some of the reasons why youngsters are opting to choose a part time MBA or an executive MBA. These are offered by many colleges around the city. These parttime and weekend courses are gaining popularity. Many top companies are even sponsoring the MBAs to ensure that their employees are updated and not lagging behind. Albana Khatri (27), a manager and HR management student, is of the opinion that doing a full-time MBA course of two years would have been a waste of time. “As I progressed in the corporate world, I realised that I needed to gain that addi-
tional educational qualification to rise up smoothly, but I wasn’t going to leave my job and enroll in a full-time course. So I decided that doing it simultaneously would be a win-win situation for me. Working and studying helps convert classlearnt theoretical knowledge into practicality at work with the added benefit of industrial exposure.” The good thing about working parttime is that no time is lost. You gain the work experience that you might have lost if you take a break to study. Also, most executive MBAs need a minimum amount of work experience which is superb for employees who have the required experience, this MBA also happens to be shorter. Mitesh Morani (30), a management student and a marketing professional also sees this as added benefits in the mad race for a well-paid job. He says, “Earlier a B Com graduate was hard to find but today everybody has a post-graduate degree and so the competition has gotten tougher and to even be considered in the league of the qualified, you have to study and meet the basic criteria of the job because today an MBA graduate can even be hired for a mere Rs 10,000 per month. So the only way to put yourself above the rest and be sought after is by adding to both, your education qualification and your work experience.” The competitive nature of careers and the need to beat the run-of-the-mill has thus fuelled this new trend. In any field for that matter, Eshan, in his experience, believes that a fresher who has done a full time course would do justice to the theoretical bit of it and would lag behind on the
professional front. If one is to work and study, he relates to the academic concepts as they are put into practice and thus has a better understanding of the workings of that concept. He can thus analyse, absorb and apply in a practical working environment everything that he studied. Now the big question everyone is asking is whether it's fruitful to do both together. Does either aspect suffer because of the balancing act one has to do? Not only is one expected to do wonders at the work place but also make it to class, keep up with assignments projects and study along with it all. Can one deal with all the stress, physical fatigue? And while Albana feels that such a challenging situation makes you more responsible, Mithesh admits to it not being in the least bit easy “It’s been seven months that I haven’t met my friends as I’m constantly oscillating between work and class and I don’t even find time for family or important family functions. It is extremely stressful and I’ve seen colleagues either leave their job to complete the course or leave the course to concentrate on their job.” These MBA courses don't come cheap and one has to invest quite a bit for the same or stick to just working without pursuing a further degree. But if you are working, you're likely to earn enough to handle the expense. And the added degree will only help you get a better appraisal or salary. What is important here is that you are able to do justice to both. If you are that is great but in case you can't and you can financially afford it you should try doing one at a time. It eventually boils down to simply killing the competition!
Want to study Marketing
I am looking to do a Masters in Marketing/Strategy/Management what are some of the courses and or universities that I can look at? —Shivam There are several courses in the UK that are marketing focused with management and/or strategy. In order to apply to any of these courses make sure you have a statement of purpose (approximately 600 words), your undergraduate level transcripts, recommendation letters from a teacher and an employer (if applicable) and the online application. I am currently in the 11th standard and am looking to study theater in college. How should I go about the application process and what schools should I look at? —Akriti A lot of the bigger national universities in America will have theater schools as well and therefore these schools tend to follow the standard admissions process. That means, that you should begin planning for your applications now and decide when you will take the SATs or ACTs as these schools will require
standardized test scores for admissions. The next thing you will need to do is speak to your school counselor about your forthcoming applications and then identify teachers who will write your recommendation letters for you. Once you have these in place you should focus all your attention on your applications. Some colleges will have a special supplement application for prospective Theater students which may include submitting videos, writing additional essays, etc. Being a theater student in the U.S. will give you the flexibility of pursuing other interests alongside your drama studies and therefore would be a great option for a high school student interested in theater. CMU, Yale, NYU, Northwestern are some universities that have a strong program in theatre.

Says Tracy D’souza, Business person, Empire Media Works which deals with Film-making and Innovative film Production adding, “I love the challenges my job throws at me”
I
am a Commerce Graduate from St Andrews College and later studied at Prahlad Kakar’s ‘Genesis’ School of Film making. My education has been a great help. Education in principle has helped me discipline myself and this discipline is integral to existence itself. I love the 30-second stories about different products and the way these stories are told, more importantly to me the way it’s made. At my first few shoots I realised I had the drive, passion and detailing required for doing production. I loved being able to make tricky, complicated or almost impossible things possible or put difficult complex ad film productions together. The opportunity to assist in creating the director’s vision or story in the most severest or stringent budget and making an immensely beautiful film is a challenge I love about my profession. This is a great field to work in. I find this aspect very interesting and it keeps me on my toes and my mind is always churning out new ideas. I have been a part of this industry for almost five years now. I have been constantly learning and evolving on each ad film production and since every film is different, the production is also different on each one. No two projects are ever the same. Though the basic skill set and production requirement will be generic, each project has its own unique requirement and detailing. Thus, the training or rather the learning is an ongoing process. Initially (read teething days for some) on a set, you could be totally lost. Everyone is doing their own job and there's usually so much of
activity and pandemonium around, depending on the scale of production. Everyone at Genesis starts as a ‘flunkee’ under Prahlad and then if you have the mettle and the keen sense of passion, detailing, persistence for production you can then gradually grow from a Production Assistant to an Assistant director or choose a particular department that you would like to work with, be it art or costumes etc and eventually go on to handle the production to later maybe becoming a line or executive producer to eventually a producer. Likewise I have grown from a ‘Flunkee’ or Production assistant to now a line producer, to running my own business. The ad films, the challenges it brings and the learning opportunities are tremendous. There are some difficulties in the field. The growth could be slow initially almost making you lose faith. Sometimes the team or the shooting conditions could be unreasonably demanding. However if you persist and make the right contacts then you can succeed and do well. Depending on the experience, scope of work and production house, line producers are paid either on a per shoot day basis or are given a package deal starting from Rs 15,000 approximately per month. Later on when you gain experience it all depends on your understanding of the subject and your performance. If you are good then you can demand your salary. There are tremendous opportunities to grow in this field in India. The industry is growing and there is definitely great scope for film pro-

A GLAMOROUS CAREER IN JEWELLERY DESIGN
C
onsumers today often seek out exclusive jewellery pieces to reflect their personal style. With design playing an important role in the dynamics of retail jewellery, skilled and innovative designers who can translate their visions into reality are in high demand. According to some statistics, the domestic gems and jewellery industry had a market size of INR 251,000 crore in 2013, with a potential to grow to INR 500,000–530,000 crore by 2018. A large portion of this growth is attributed to the increase in demand for branded and designer jewellery. While the industry is growing, the supply of designers is yet to meet the surging demand. As compared to the UK, which has over 250,000 designers, China and Taiwan that boast of a population of over 150,000 designers each, India still has only around 4,500– 5,000 skilled jewellery designers. It is hardly a surprise then that a recent survey indicated jewellery design to be the most sought after career by 2017. Jewellery designers utilise creativity and imagination to translate design concepts into beautiful pieces of jewellery. And design courses help aspiring designers prepare for a career in the gem and jewellery industry.
Jewellery Design Fundamentals Jewellery design is the art of conceptualising and rendering designs for jewellery. It combines creativity and imagination with a deep understanding of jewellery manufacturing. Designers apply basic principles of design and composition to illustrate their ideas. Jewellery design programmes teach the technical and practical
skills required for this specialised field.
Skills of a Jewellery Designer A jewellery designer should have creativity, good hand-eye coordination, a keen eye for detail, knowledge of current trends and a passion for jewellery. An understanding of metals, gemstones and other jewellery materials will help a designer translate their ideas into actual jewellery pieces. Look for a design course that teaches basic drawing skills and detailed design theory.
Scope for Training Training from an institute like GIA (Gemological Institute of America) in the art of jewellery design can create a steady foundation. Courses often range from a two-day class that teaches the basics of design to a comprehensive programme of nine weeks that offers the opportunity to develop a portfolio.
Tips for choosing the Right Course Many factors should be considered when choosing a jewellery design course. To receive a well-rounded and comprehensive education, be sure to select a globally recognised institute. Choose a course that focuses on both Indian and western styles of jewellery. Look for a curriculum that starts with the fundamentals of design and composition. Another important parameter is to ensure that the instructor will provide personalized attention to guide you through the learning experience. A campus tour of the institute will provide clarity on the staff, facilities and the course curriculum. Opt for a programme that develops a
culture of creative thinking and teaches jewellery design through theory and hands-on learning. Consider your overall development as a gem and jewellery professional when choosing an education. For instance, does the programme conduct field trips to manufacturing facilities to demonstrate how gems are processed and jewellery is manufactured? Does it invite industry leaders to share their experiences and knowledge at information sessions? Does it provide language assistance to understand complex technical concepts? Does it offer networking opportunities at industry events and trade shows? A comprehensive programme should provide the opportunity to develop a portfolio of designs. These features can help give you the best learning experience and increase your chance of success as a jewellery designer. Prominent institutes in gems and jewellery: GIA is a global non-profit institute known as the “Harvard of Gems and Jewellery”. GIA offers industry recognised courses in gemmology, jewellery design, retail sales, merchandising and more. It also offers students services, placement assistance and alumni networking opportunities. GIA India will be conducting the Jewellery Design course in Mumbai from November 13 to January 16. opportunities into consideration I started a production house of my own. It is tough initially especially to get clients and put your team together but as I said earlier, I love the challenges the job throws at me. My advice to those entering the profession is – You have to be alert and pick up cues and learn along the way. You have to gear yourself up for challenges and resolve issues and prob-
lems that come your way. Besides these you have to have an open mind and a keen sense of interest. The field is extremely challenging and extremely demanding. Therefore you also have to get ready for a lot of hard work. The number of working-hours too is not restricted to the typical 9 to 5 job. Therefore you have to gear yourself to work as and when the project beckons. As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

ne of the college activities that I have loved and will never forget is Kc@60. This is one of the most popular college events that took place this year in Mumbai. We recently celebrated 60 years of our college. This event was the biggest in the history of KC. Celebrities and even the president of India graced the event. On this grand occasion, the college has also thrown open its doors to a lot many courses including the latest one – MscJ. KC has

always given students with very high potential in academic and extra circular activities the right push and encouragement. Other than this year's kc@60, the college organised many youth festivals that encourage new talent to be explored and get a platform to perform in front of the industry's best. What I love about KC is that it's so lively even if I was to walk during the late evening hours I may find students loitering outside college. And since I have been here for my junior college I have a strange attachment to it. I have participated in many inter collegiate competitions and got recognition for it.

ant advice on how to make conversation? Need help making your life happier? Require answers to find your true self? Just want entertainment? All the answers to these questions are found in BOOKS: A man’s best friend. What would a man do without books? A book and its reader are inseparable from each other. Books can be looked up for inspiration, fun, philosophy, advice and can change our perspective about something for a lifetime. Well, different books tell different stories about life. Some leave readers with a wry smile on their lips, whereas some leave them in tears or even in utter astonishment. The fact that the stories we read in books are so much more realistic than the movies we watch, makes us relate to them easily and quickly. Reading books just gives a man the calmness and peace which is needed in a world like ours. That feeling when you’re at the end of a book and your heart is racing as to wanting to know desperately how it will end and what effect it’ll have on you is just plain different. After you finish it, that’s the only
thing going on in your mind for a long time and no other thoughts even come to your mind. That is the happiness for which I read books even if it means reading them for the second or third time. Books can change the mood of a person, inspire him to such an extent that he forgets who he is and transforms into a totally new person, also they bring out the feelings in you that you thought you never had and most of all they make your mind and heart as imaginative as ever.

It’s youth to the rescue in Srinagar operations Afternoon Despatch & Courier
MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2014

A
part of the nation goes forward in the hope of seeing a better India through the eyes of the youth. A lot in the current scenario rests on the broad shoulders of today’s youth, in their collective bid to change the world. And true to type, Indian youth presently has tons of potential. Each revolution has always started with a single action. The youth of India has the capacity to make this land a splendidnation. Let's take instances like the gang rape in Delhi or the Jessica murder case. It was the youth that stepped forward to ask for justice. There have been times where 75 per cent of population has put its best foot forward. And there are countless ways in which the youth of this country can help India move from a developing nation to a developed nation. My recent thought process has completely changed after the recent floods that occurred in Jammu and Kashmir. Here are ways in which the youth can change the pace of progress. Active participation in social activities during time of need is a start. India faces a large number of calamities due to which a lot is destroyed and lost. If one takes the initiative on her own, much can be achieved. The recent floods in Srinagar would have destroyed everything if it wasn't for the youth of the state who stood up together using every resource to save the people. Sometimes a thought works greater than an action. Another example worth mentioning is of the Ganpati visarjans that happen every year across the country. A group of young individuals gather after the final day of the visarjan to clear the trash left on the shores to keep their city clean. Almost two months ago, when Kashmir painfully suffered in the floods, a group of youth took up the initiative to help the needy. By just spreading word across social media and among friends and relatives, we were able to send 4,000 blankets, and 1,200 kg of ready-to-eat packets for the flood victims of Kashmir.
The reality was very harsh to witness. People had lost everything and yet hadn't lost hope. As a youngster I can completely relate to these individual activities. When I came to know that no help was reaching some of the areas that were destroyed, I was devastated. Civilians residing in temporary settlements only sought the help of the locals. A group of young individuals who didn't belong to any organisation rented all their resources to rescue the victims. The youth took a stand for humanity. My experience taught me a lot. You do not need the entire world to stand by you to accomplish good. It's a hand you need to lend out when you can. Our major concerned areas were Pamposh Colony, Bemina, Fourshore Road, interiors of the Dal Lake, Tel Bal, Bypass Road, Barbasha and Sumarbugh. These were the areas that were impacted first as the water started flooding the territory. The locals refused to take any help from the government. The government themselves lacked the efficiency to reach these places at the time of calamity for various reasons like distance, population, caste and creed. So we initiated
these plans by doing a survey of each area. We visited each home and spoke to the people. Based on our findings, we decided on the requirements. However no matter
Kuluoo, Firdous Guroo – and their contributions towards the struggle in saving lives. Sameer was out for almost three days by making boats of empty drums to row across. Khalid, a telecom employee, hadn't seen his home for days. They rented boats and paid from their own pockets to go around areas on the outskirts of the city. Firdous and Adil were constantly in touch with a committee they formed to reach out to the needy with basic requirements. If it wasn't the youth of Kashmir many more lives would have been lost. Fortunately or unfortunately, due to blind faith, many people from the main land contributed, but the sad truth is, much of that contribution did not reach the right hands. During the later stages of the rescue, the victims were supplied with medicines which were later found to be expired. Due to the pollution a lot of people's eyes how big or small our deed was, the got infected. I would like to conclude by real heroes were the young people of Kashmir. I would like to mention thanking all the people who put in a few names here – Adil Guroo, their best efforts and for believing Khalid Ahmad Shah, Sameer we are one. gain the attention of Interpol’s Jean Pierre Napoleon (Ty Burrell) and CIA agent Sam Eagle. Meanwhile the frog Kermit, who is supposed to be with his troupe, languishes in a Siberian prison. Even though he tries his best to convince the guards and inmates that they have the wrong frog, the plea falls on deaf ears. Somehow, he manages to get on the good side of chief warden Nadya (Tina Fey) by organizing the end of the year show, a cultural programme for inmates in the hope that he can escape from prison and rejoin his pals and bring Constantine to justice. Don’t miss out Nadya’s Russian accent. But Kermit cannot do it alone; he needs
support of his friends. While Sam the Eagle and Inspector Jean Pierre Napoleon investigate the robberies, the Muppets find their new ‘boss’ strangely changed and arrogant, unlike the humble Kermit. Only when Walter, Fozzie and Animal realize the truth is there a chance to prevent Constantine and Dominic from pulling off the crime of the century. Can they do it? Will Kermit save the day? There's plenty of fun for the whole family, from adventure, humor, romance to some great new songs, this surely is the most wanted Muppet movie ever. — Verus Ferreira

EW DELHI: An Arunachal Pradesh minister yesterday warned of a ‘Kargil-like’ situation in the border state as he spoke of a lack of development forcing locals to migrate away from farflung areas and giving China an opportunity to venture deeper inside Indian territory. Kalikho Pul, the state’s minister of health and tribal affairs, painted a grim picture of the state’s territory bordering China and claimed that the Centre’s population-based funding was to blame for the lack of development in the thinly-populated state. “What happened in Kargil will happen in Arunachal,” he said, referring to the intrusion by Pakistani forces into the Ladakh region in 1999. “People living in border areas are migrating to urban places as they have no facilities. These places are getting empty, due to which China is coming inside,” Pul said here at a conference of tribal ministers from the various states and Union Territories. China disputes Indian sovereignty over large parts of the state. Finding fault with the Union government’s funding based on a state’s population, he said that the states are told by the Centre to control their birth rate, but funding is more for states with bigger population. “It cannot go on like this. What we are supposed to do... You speak here about seven, eightlane roads, metro trains and what not, but our people do not even have tracks for walking. There is no drinking water, nothing,” he told an audience comprising, among others, the Union minister for Tribal Affairs, Jual Oram. The Centre, he said, should give special preference to the northeastern states.
India offers $300mn LoC to Vietnam N EW DELHI: Targeting an annual bilateral commerce of US $15 billion by 2020, India on Tuesday offered a $300 million credit line to Vietnam for trade diversification. India has already extended a $100 million Line of Credit (LoC) last month to the South East Asian nation for defence procurement to help it modernise its armed forces. During a meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Tan Dung where they noted that enhancing economic cooperation should be pursued as a strategic objective, a $300 million LoC was offered by India to strengthen commercial ties, sources said. “Our defence cooperation with Vietnam is among our most important ones. India remains committed to the modernisation of Vietnam’s defence and security forces,” Modi said following his talks with Tan. We have also agreed to enhance our security cooperation, including in counter-terrorism,” Modi said. According to official sources, Vietnam has agreed to buy four patrol vessels for its Navy under the LoC Scheme but is yet to formally identify the shipyard it wants them from. Vietnam wants the vessel for surveillance off its coast and around its military bases in the Spratly island chain in the South China Sea where it is building a credible naval deterrent to China with Kilo-class submarines from Russia. Sources also said that talks are on to train Vietnam Air Force pilots in flying Sukhoi fighters as well.

“Garment exports are on the sustained path of growth and we have incurred a 17.6% growth in this fiscal. Exports in dollar terms for the month of September 2014 stood 1.3 bn registering 16% growth. The cumulative April- September of the Financial Year 2014-15 has increased by 17.6% over the same period of previous FY and reached to USD 8.3 bn, which is good performance,” says Virender Uppal, Chairman Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC). According to Uppal the “ increasing labour cost in China, non-compliance of large number of factories in Bangladesh, high rate of inflation, currency appreciation, etc with the competing countries have provided India a big opportunity in view of its relative advantage...A small push from the Govt with its policy support may help India to get more business as overseas buyers are looking at India as safe and reliable option for the sourcing. But to capture the space in markets left by China and Bangladesh, we have to be competitive in pricing, apart from meeting strict time-lines and better quality delivery by Indian exporters, he added.

ndia’s online retail market is estimated to grow over 4-fold to touch USD 14.5 bn (over Rs 88,000 crore) by 2018 on account of rapid expansion of e-commerce in the country. According to research and consultancy firm RNCOS, the online retail market is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 40-45% during 2014-18. “The Indian online retail market has been striding leaps and bounds over the past few years on account of digital revolution. The trend is expected to continue as the online retail market in India is estimated to touch the mark of USD 14.5 bn by 2018,” a report by RNCOS said. The current market size of online retail sector has been pegged at USD 3.5 bn (over Rs 21,000 crore), it added. As per the ‘White paper on Indian Online Retail Industry: The War of Clicks’, India is among the most swiftly emerging online retail market across Asia-Pacific region al-
though the expanse of e-commerce is at a sprouting stage. “The major reasons for this growth will include the increasing penetration of mobile Internet, higher purchases of smartphones, need for ease of shopping, time convenience and higher mobility,” the study paper said. Heavy discounts offered by online portals will also propel the market growth, it added. In terms of product segments, at present electronic gadgets claim the highest share followed by apparel and books. “But it is likely that few years down the line, apparel and accessories will take over the top slot from electronic gadgets. In addition to this, home decor and furnishing will mark an increase in its share,” RNCOS said. The research firm said this increase will be primarily on account of growing acceptance of home grown apparel brands of online shopping portals and openness towards buying home decor and furniture online. “Better payment and return poli-
cies will further fuel the increase,” it added. Some other factors helping the online retail industry seeing good growth include smartphones offering accessibility to online shopping, aspirations of tier II & III cities, women becoming more tech savvy, evolving perception around branded products, impulsive buying and logistical convenience. RNCOS, however, said there are certain challenges which are hindering the industrial growth such as absence of proper Internet connections in many rural areas. Moreover, some consumers are still skeptical about the security of online financial transactions, it added. “Despite these glitches and predicaments, the future of the Indian retail online retail industry looks robust. “There are more and more efforts from government and private players’ end to meliorate the facility of logistics, increase the Internet penetration and facilitate better services for the end consumer,” the report said.
Despite FM’s Call, Analysts See RBI Holding Rates On Dec 2 By A Business Reporter
F
oreign brokerages yesterday said Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan is unlikely to yield to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s call for a rate cut at the December 2 policy review. “Pressure is mounting on the RBI to cut rates at its December meeting... Jaitley’s recent call to lower rates to encourage construction activity has revived expectations for rate cuts but it is unlikely to be swayed by the base effects-driven softening in inflation,” Singaporean brokerage DBS said in a note. Analysts are expecting inflation to fall further in October and November on base effect. Inflation measured by consumer prices has been trending down for over four months, and came in at 6.7% in September. The RBI has set a January 2015 CPI target of 8% and 6% for January 2016. Its French peer BNP Paribas also
said the RBI may not deliver a rate cut in its next meeting. “Rate-cut speculation remains premature in our opinion, given the still uncomfortably high household inflation expectations, which need to be reanchored to lock in lower inflation,” it said in a note. In an interview over the weekend, Jaitley had hinted that time was ripe for rate cut with inflation trending down. “Currently, interest rates are a disincentive. Now that inflation seems to be stabilising somewhat, the time seems to have come to moderate the interest rates,” he had said in a media interview. According to some analysts, the lower GDP growth in the September quarter (some expect to slip below 5%), may put more pressure on the RBI to deliver a rate cut. “Against this backdrop of weak growth and falling inflation, the Reserve Bank is likely to face mounting pressure to ease rates at the December 2 meeting. That said, the RBI will look past

these base-effect swings to focus on anchoring inflationary expectations and ensuring medium-term stability,” the DBS note said. Opinion seems to be building up increasingly that Rajan may not do a rate cut at the December review. Yesterday, Bank of America Merrill Lynch also said there may not be a cut in December. DBS said that other factors like the new monetary policy framework will also be weighing in while taking a call on the rates. “Any amendments in the inflation targets, and/or the establishment of a monetary policy committee to take rate decisions, will influence the direction of rates into the 2016 fiscal year,” it said.

HENNAI: Elano Blumer and John Stiven Mendoza inspired Chennaiyin FC to a thumping 5-1 win against fancied Mumbai City FC with a brace each at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai. Jeje Lalpekhlua also got onto the score sheet for the hosts while Syed Rahim Nabi notched a consolation goal for the visitors late in the game by heading in a corner. Chennai move to second on the table with nine points from their third win in four games while Mumbai remain in the sixth position with three points after succumbing to their third defeat.

Hero of the match and tournament top scorer with five goals, Elano opened the account with a penalty in the 9th minute and followed it up with a wonderful free kick in the 70th minute. In between, Jeje hit the target in the 26th minute after the Brazilian had lobbed the ball over the Mumbai defence.
But it was another Bangalore cueist, Bhaskar, who hogged the limelight after dispatching top Singapore cueist Gilchrist 797-561. Bhaskar, with a highest break of 204, is sure eyeing his first world title as he takes on Robert Hall, who got past India's Devendra Joshi 862-611, in the semifinal. But the most awaited lastfour clash will surely be between title contenders Advani and England's David Causier, who had it easy against Dhruv Sitwala (1146616) in the last-eight match.
Dynamos seek to build winning momentum against NorthEast By Philem Dipak Singh
N
EW DELHI: A sound thrashing of Chennaiyin FC having boosted their confidence, Delhi Dynamos would look to take forward the momentum when they clash with NorthEast United FC in their Hero Indian Super League fixture here today. After two consecutive draws, Delhi notched up their first win of the tournament on October 25 by drubbing the Chennai side 4-1 through three spectacular goals and another from the penalty spot to the huge de-
light of home fans and coach Harm van Veldhoven. The Dutch coach talked about his attacking brand of football and goals that would come by before the tournament but he was finding it difficult to answer questions after his side could get just two goals in the first two matches. Now that his players have tasted their first victory with four goals against a quality side like Chennaiyin, who have come after winning their first two matches, Veldhoven is expected to maintain the tempo on Wednesday also.
NorthEast, however, would be a tough team to beat, having won two out of four matches (one match a draw and the other a loss) they have played so far and now at second spot in the league table with seven points. They have also come here on a high after defeating Mumbai City FC 2-0 in their first away match. Delhi, on five points and fourth in league table, will have another reason to win tomorrow's match as after this they will be on the road for three games before returning home for their No-

Veldhoven is likely to stick to the starting lie-up that played against Chennaiyin FC but Brazilian Gustavo Dos Santos, who scored a goal just after coming onto the field in the 89th minute through a solo effort, could be given more playing time. The midfield trio of Hans Mulder, Bruno Herrero and Steven Dias did a commendable job by controlling the middle of the park for Alessandro Del Piero, Shylo Malswamtluanga and Mads Junker to look for goals.
JAMAICA: All is not well between West Indies ODI captain Dwayne Bravo and Marlon Samuels with the middle order batsman yet again insisting that he was not a part of the decision to abandon the tour of India, and said he was in favour of solving the problem after finishing the series. Samuels disagreed with Bravo's statement that he had given consent to standing by "any decision taken by the team". "No, I didn't say 'I am going to stand by any decision'," Samuels was quoted as saying by 'espncricinfo.Com'. "Because nobody asked me questions like that. It is up to the individual to say okay I am with you. You had people in the room that didn't even open their mouth or say anything. At the end of the day, I went there and asked my questions and I wasn't satisfied (by the response). If I was satisfied then I will be the first person to come out because I am an outspoken person. Then I will be the first person to come out and defend everything with (Bravo)," he said. Samuels said he was against pulling out of the India tour midway. "This has nothing to do with India. This is our problem. So finish the tour and then go back to the Caribbean and sort out the problem. India is the most important team that West Indies play against. India is the greatest team that West Indies play against in every way possible. The relationship with India is too great. It is a wonderful relationship," the Jamaican said.

UMBAI: Indian squash professionals - reigning champion Saurav Ghosal, Mahesh Mangaonkar and Harinder Pal Sandhu - are the top three seeds in the men's section at the 62nd Senior National Championships to be held at the Cricket Club of India here from November 3-8. The trio was part of the Indian men's team that won the gold medal in the Incheon Asian Games. The tournament would help him in his preparations for the World Open commencing on November 12 in Doha, Qatar, said 20-yearold Mangaonkar at the media conference to announce the tournament here. "I want to try and become the India number 1. I have played in four nationals earlier and (9-time winner) Saurav had not been beaten in any of them. The tournament would also help me prepare for the World Open in which I am seeded number 2 in the qualifiers," said Mangaonkar. "I need to win only one match to reach the 64-man main draw at the World Open. Only I and Saurav (ranked 17 currently) are to play there," he added. Saurav has won eight of the nine men's titles in a row and the only time he
had been beaten was at the nationals hosted by Bombay Gymkhana here by senior Ritwik Bhattacharya. The women's draw in the nationals is headed by Joshana Chinappa in the absence of India no. 1 Deepika Pallikal, with whom she created history in July by clinching the doubles gold in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Mangaonkar, who is currently ranked 56, is expecting his ranking to improve to 48 or 49 by November 1 when the next list is released by the Professional Squash Association. "I finished runner up in the JSW Circuit challenger in Jaipur (after losing to Sandhu in the final) and then won in the Juhu event in Mumbai. I skipped the next two. I expect my ranking to be 48 or 49 when the new list is released on November 1," said Mangaonkar. Mangaonkar, whose startof-the-season goal was to end the year ranked in the top 50, has taken the first step in accomplishing it and needs to protect his ranking now."I am yet to make my plans for next year, but one of the goals is to end up in the top 30," said the player who hails from Mumbai. The total prize money is Rs 6.5 lakh.

31 Female boxer dies after being in coma
PRETORIA: A female boxer in South Africa has died after being in a coma for two weeks following a bout, another sports death in a country already mourning the loss of a former worldchampion runner and the captain of the national football team. The sports ministry's announcement Tuesday that Phindile Mwelase had died Saturday in the hospital means three South African athletes died in three days. Former 800-meter world champion and Olympic silver medalist Mbulaeni Mulaudzi was killed in a car crash on Friday. Popular national soccer team captain and goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa was fatally shot in an apparent house robbery on Sunday, unleashing widespread dismay and anger in South Africa, which struggles with high levels of violent crime. Mwelase died at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in the capital, Pretoria, South Africa's sports ministry said, after she was knocked out in a bout on Oct. 10. It didn't give her age but reports said she was 31. The ministry said it was "a very difficult week" for South African sport. Boxing South Africa, the national federation, announced Mwelase's funeral would be held on Saturday in her home town of Ladysmith, in the eastern Kwazulu-Natal province.
