CELEBRATE Indian-Americans give rock star treatment to Modi
By Lalit K Jha & Yoshita Singh
N
EW YORK: Indian-Americans from across the nation gave a 'rock star' treatment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the prestigious Madison Square Garden (MSG) in the Big Apple, where nearly 20,000 strong gathering of Indian Diaspora welcomed the Indian leader.
Shouting slogans like 'Narendra Modi Zindabaad', 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and 'Welcome Modi', Indian-Americans started arriving at the venue since early in the morning. People were seen waiting in long queues. By 9 p.m. a large number of people were dressed in Modi T-shirt with portrait of Modi on it. Many were holding banners and slogans like 'America

Exposure to other people's smoke increases the risk of heart disease even for nonsmokers. increased risk. Accumulation of abdominal fat is also an indicator of risk and can be measured by waist circumference or waist-to-hip ratio. Lack of exercise: Increases the risk of developing heart disease by 150 per cent.
Diet: Too much salt can lead to high blood pressure, too many fats can lead to clogged arteries and low fruit and vegetable intake accounts for about 20 per cent of heart disease and stroke worldwide.
Stress: Poorly controlled stress and anger can lead to heart attacks and stokes.
Some Do's for Heart:
Fruits and vegetables: Consume at least five servings of fruit and vegetables a day.
Physical activity: Being physically active helps build endurance, control blood pressure, reduce cholesterol levels and can aid in weight control and reduce risk of developing diabetes. A 30 minute brisk activity a day can lower blood pressure.

Eat healthy: Avoid foods high in saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol. Use less salt and avoid processed foods. Try to limit your salt intake to less than five grams per day (about one teaspoon). Quit smoking: Quit smoking and your risk of coronary heart disease will be halved
“Indians have increased incidences of heart disease especially in younger age group. It is estimated that Indians are nearly four times more susceptible to heart attacks, with 25 per cent of attacks happening to people under the age of 40, unheard of in other population. Among urban Indians, incidence is 12 per cent. Many of us are not aware that our lifestyle and heritage could put us at risk.” — Dr. Rahul Gupta, Senior Interventional Cardiologist & Director of Cardium Advanced Heart Care Centre, Navi Mumbai
“The occurrence of heart diseases growing rapidly in the younger age group and the extent and the severity of disease is alarming. Normally, when a heart disease occurs in the people of younger age group, one expects the single vessel disease in the 90% of younger age group heart patients. But what we have seen in the recent past is that all three vessels diffuse severe disease in more than 40% of the patients, which many times requires a bypass surgery at a young age.” — Dr. Hasmukh Ravat, Senior Interventional Cardiologist and Head of the Department, Cardiology, Fortis Hospital, Mulund
“The incidences of Heart Attacks among women are steadily rising. The most worrying factor is that it is affecting more women in the reproductive age group now, unlike in the past when women got it mostly after menopause. The main reason for this is extreme stress caused by juggling home and the workplace. This, coupled with risk factors such as higher prevalence of diabetes, obesity and related ailments and physical inactivity, has only added to the problem.” — Dr Zakia Khan, Interventional Cardiologist, Fortis hospital, Kalyan
The World Health Organaisation (WHO) promotes salt reduction as a “best buy” for governments to prevent and control noncommunicable diseases such as heart diseases and stroke, and recommends a daily salt intake of less than five grams per adult or just under a teaspoon. The recommendation is even lower for children, depending on their energy needs. High salt intake increases the risk of high blood pressure and is associated with heart disease, stroke and other diseases. An estimated 2.5 million deaths could be prevented each year if global salt consumption were reduced to the recommended level.

THE civil rights body behind a lawsuit filed against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in connection with the 2002 Gujarat riots case has offered a reward of US $10,000 to anyone who could serve him with the court summons. New York-based legal advisor Gurpatwant Singh Pannun said that American Justice Centre (AJC) is offering a reward of $10,000 to anyone who will serve the summons on Modi during his various public engagements in the city. The reward will be given to the person who serves the summons and brings a pictorial and video proof that the summons have been served. The group has also hired process servers to serve the summons. affirmed their alliances. Although both the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may be feeling optimistic about their electoral chances, the multi-cornered contest is bound to throw up a hung Assembly. But this separation appears to be temporary and we might once again see a postpoll realignment of parties, as power is the ultimate glue that binds even die-hard adversaries. Then ideological differences and past vitriolic barbs aimed at each other are conveniently forgotten for the sake of power. With a shortened election schedule, it leaves little time for campaigning. Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray has set the ball rolling with a diatribe aimed at his once ally, the BJP, but for some strange reason, the latter has chosen not to react to the accusations being hurled by the Sena. That is what the Congress ideally wants to happen as it gives it the dual advantage of a split in the Sena-BJP, Sena-MNS and overall Marathi vote bank. It might be
voters' list and the steady migration of people into Maharashtra and Mumbai has considerably altered the demographic composition of the assembly Constituencies post2006 delimitation. On hindsight of this ugly war of words, this separation will surely make all the political parties realise where they stand in terms of popular mandate. It is rather amusing to find the major political parties haggling among themselves over sharing Assembly constituencies which are called as 'Matadar Sangh' (Voters' Assembly). Instead of letting the voters decide whom they should elect, they have bitterly parted ways, which they ought to have done long ago, leaving the voter visibly irritated and angry. It is hard to understand the arguments based on past precedents that no longer appear to be valid. Vision documents and development agendas have been relegated to the backstage and, instead, what the voter is being treated to is something worse than a street corner fight.
avita Karkare, wife of slain Maharashtra Police's AntiTerrorist Squad chief Hemant Karkare was rushed to P D Hinduja Hospital on Saturday morning after she fell unconscious. Doctors at the hospital suspect that she has suffered a ruptured aneurysm in the brain that has left her in a totally vegetative state. Dr P P Ashok, consultant and Head of Neurology at Hinduja Hospital, said, “She was brought to the hospital in a completely arrested and deeply unconscious state. The first thing we did was revive her heart and stablise all her basic parameters. As she was totally unresponsive, there was no chance of any treatment or surgery. Then she was put on a ventilator and total life support and sent for a scan. The scan revealed that she has suffered a major brain haemorrhage. We suspect that it is mostly likely a case of a ruptured aneurysm. This is yet to be confirmed though. Her heart was revived but her brain is badly damaged as there is no blood supply to her brain.” An aneurysm is a developmental defect of the blood vessels of the brain, is almost completely asymptomatic and is not detected until it ruptures. Sometimes there is a mild bleeding due to a minor rupture and if that is
caught and operated on in time, the major rupture can be avoided. This mild bleeding causes a sudden and severe headache, the warning headache, that goes on into the neck. young man was run over by a train while was crossing the Tilak Nagar railway track at around 8 pm on Saturday night and lost both his legs. The police registered case of illegal trespassing, but the parents allege that he was kidnapped by some unidentified persons who put him down on the railway track. The victim has been identified as Narendra Korawal (20), an employee at a 'chappal' workshop in the Eastern suburbs. He was rushed to a
nearby civic hospital where doctors say he is in a stable but critical condition. Narendra did not report to work that day. According to the police report, Narendra was trespassing at Lokmanya Tilak railway station at Chembur. There was a foot over bridge (FOB) to cross the line, yet he chose to cross the tracks. Eyewitnesses and the local police rushed the victim to Rajawadi Hospital from where he has been shifted to Sion Hospital for further medical treatment. His parents allege that
someone one pushed him while he was standing at the door on board the local train. The police, however, said that if he was pushed from the train, he would have fallen away from tracks and would have suffered injuries other than the cutting of legs. Narendra's cousin Vijay Raj said, “He told us that some unidentified people held him down on the railway track when the local train was approaching. He shouted but his voice could not be heard and train ran over him.”
Recalibration deadline extended to Sept. 30 By Aroosa Ahmed
T
he deadline for the taxiand autorickshaw-metre recalibration has been extended by four days. Sources said that the recalibration process was started four days after the verdict had come out, which is why a request was sent to the transport commissioner to extend the date of recalibration. The transport commissioner has accepted the
request and extended the deadline from September 26 to Septermber 30. Thampy Kurain, general secretary of an autorickshaw union in the city, said, “The delay in starting the recalibration occurred because of companies delaying in the making of chips to be inserted in the metres. The recalibration started on August 17, so the 45-day-period has been extended to September 30.”
On August 12, the Bombay High Court increased the auto and taxi fares in the city by Rs 2. The minimum autorickshaw fare is now Rs 17 and taxi fare is now Rs 21.The new fare came into existence from midnight on August 12, but is only applicable after the metres are recalibrated. A 45-day time period was given to re-calibrate the metres with the revised fares after which drivers will be fined.

rtists from the National Street for Performing Arts (NSPA) are at it again, this time entertaining commuters at the Metro stations since the last week. The artists perform on the weekend – Friday, Saturday and Sunday – from 5 pm to 7 pm, at Ghatkopar, Andheri and D.N. Nagar Metro stations.
Shruti Krishnan, event coordinator for the NSPA, said, “I commute by the Metro and thought, why don't we entertain the metro commuters! The Metro authorities appreciated and supported the idea.” Speaking about the inspiration behind performing at railway stations, Krishnan said, “In countries like England, it is very common and
the people do not have to take special permission. In India there are restrictions, but we are doing our best and entertaining the crowd at public places.” Public spaces in the city are disappearing. But the ones that are left are creatively being used by a group of musicians to perform their art form, with the mission to reclaim public spaces for the arts.

ocal residents in Santacruz bashed up a 25year-old local goon on Sunday, who was on the run since past one week after he allegedly sodomised an eightyear-old boy inside the public toilet in Davri Nagar Gate number 3, Santacruz (East). The public handed over the accused Sanjay Narvekar to the police and he was arrested under section 377 (for unnatural sex) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act of 2012 (POCSO) . According to the police, the victim lives in a slum at Vakola area along with his parents. The incident occurred on September 22, when the boy visited the public lavatory. The accused followed the boy inside the toilet, locked the door and allegedly sodomised him and later fled from the spot. The boy went home and narrated the incident to his parents, who approached the police and registered a case against Narvekar.
Accused Sanjay Narvekar being led away by Santacruz police. “The accused had fled soon after the incident, but he returned to the vicinity a week later thinking that it was safe. But as soon as the public spotted him, they bashed him up and handed over to the police” said police. Police Sub Inspector (PSI) at Vakola police station Somnath Kale said, “Narvekar has been arrested for unnatural sex. He has several past criminal records in the police station like robbery, chain snatching and assault. He
was produced in the holiday court on Sunday and remanded in police custody till October 1”. Sources said, around a year back a similar incident had happened when an unidentified miscreant had sodomised a minor boy inside the public toilet, but at that time the family members did not lodge a complaint. We doubt that crime was also committed by Narvekar. However, we are investigating the matter.
Alert locals foil robbery bid in Bhayandar By Suresh Golani

ven as the inefficiency of the local police has prompted criminals to strike at will and go scot free in the district, sheer courage and presence of mind shown by alert citizens foiled a robbery bid at a gold ornament showroom in Bhayandar (east) on Friday evening. Not only did they foil the robbery bid, but also chased down the miscreant who is said to be a notorious robber.

The incident occurred when Narendra Kothari was alone at his shop, K.M. Jewellers in the Cabin Road area of Bhayandar (east) on Friday evening. A middle-aged man walked into the shop under the guise of a customer and tried to flee after snatching ornaments worth more than Rs.23,000. However Kothari, raised an alarm and succeeded in attracting the attention of pedestrians who after a hot chase managed to nab the
miscreant, who after a sound thrashing was handed over to the Navghar police station. The miscreant was later identified as Mohammed Asad Abdul Siddique, a resident of Kurla. Not ruling out Siddique’s involvement in other offences, Senior Police Inspector Abhay Kurundkar said, “We are checking the background of the accused against whom a case under section 392 of the IPC has been registered.” Further investigations are on.

The matter is just being dragged like this.” Salunkhe has not yet decided whether she will go ahead with the bail cancellation hearing. “I don't have any personal grudges against Paraskar. ith Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) backing off from poll arena, the Mira Bhayandar assembly seat is all set to witness a fourpronged battle between sitting Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator Gilbert Mendonca, Shiv Sena’s Prabhakar Mhatre, Yakub Qureshi (Congress) and BJP’s Narendra Mehta. Other aspirants include Haider Shaikh (BVA), Islam Shaikh (BSP) and local news editor Sanjay Tiwari. Political observers believe that in the 2009 polls, it was the presence of the MNS candidate which engineered an evident split in saffron alliance votes paving a virtual cakewalk for NCP’s Gilbert Mendonca who trounced his BJP rival Narendra Mehta, by a margin of 10,604 votes. opportunity to spew venom against each other. Moreover by fielding Mendonca’s bête noire Yakub Qureshi, the Congress party has exposed it’s intent of extracting revenge for the continuous humiliation and backstabbing by the local NCP leadership. While Qureshi is all set to dent NCP’s prospects in the Muslim-dominated areas of Mira Road and Uttan, Shiv Sena candidate, Prabhakar Mhatre is expected to capture the traditional Marathi votes which the BJP had nurtured for the past couple of years. Now the BJP is desperately adding communal colour to appease the Gujarati, Marwadi and Jain community voters who have a significant presence in the twin city. With an addition of 40,000 new voters, the total electoral strength of the Mira Bhayandar assembly segment currently stands at 3.64 lakh.

The temporary housing provided to the victims has no legal stamp. Pawar said that when they approached the BMC for a legal allotment letter as proof for electricity, gas and water supply, they were promised it in a month's time. But almost a year later, he said, “We can be asked to vacate these room at

ith the state Assembly elections just around the corner, over 19,000 voters from the Sindhi community in the Bandra Constituency are up in arms against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ashish Shelar for allegedly targetting their place of worship. Even though Shelar clarified that he has only raised the issue with the BMC for its double standards in demolishing structures for road widening, the members of the Parmanand Mandir Trust in Khar shocked that they had found Shelar as the man raising questions against the temple, revealed in a Right to Information (RTI) document filed by the trust. Rajesh Gurshiani, one of the trustees, said, “The issue had first come up in February when the local BMC ward office had sent notices to the structures in the way of the road widening project on P D Hinduja Road. However, the BMC had chose not to demolish our
structure citing religious sentiments.” The trust filed a RTI query to find why it was being targetted. In response to the RTI (copy of which is with the ADC), they found a handwritten complaint letter written by Shelar to the BMC questioning its failure in acting against the trust wall, under road-cutting in February. Gurshiani added, “The members of the Sindhi trust carried out a signature campaign to save their place and took a small morcha to the BMC office. We had no other choice but to approach Congress MLA Baba Siddhaqui who approached BMC commissioner Sitaram Kunte in this matter. The trust was given three months in June to find an alternative place, as the road was under cutting.” Congress MLA Baba Siddhaqui insisted that his actions had nothing to do with vote-getting. He
said, “BJP leaders are of dual personalities. At one end, they will pretend to care, but on the other end, they file complaints. This had nothing to do with politics. The people of the trust had come to me and I saw that they were genuine and right, so I approached the Chief Minister and had meetings with BMC officials and the BMC commissioner to sort out their issue. This was nothing to do with getting votes, but was a genuine case needed help.” Ashish Shelar, BJP Mumbai president, he said, “I have never complained against the trust. There were around 16 places that were a part of the road widening project. While others were demolished, only the trust land was spared. So I made a genuine complaint about why the law was not the same for all the places. My query was only to question the BMC's double standards.”

Amma in Jail T
HEY are crying in Tamil Nadu: They find it apparently difficult to accept the fact that Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has been found guilty in the disproportionate assets case. Amma had given many things free to them: electric fans, 3 grams of gold on the occasion of girl's marriage in the family, shoes and clothes. The latest gift she gave to the people was the 'Amma Cement – cement at subsidised price. Charges against her with regards to the disproportionate assets were filed 18 years ago. She was found with disproportionate assets worth over Rs.67 crore. She got the trial transferred in Bangalore. She did not have evidently any prick of the conscience as she continued in office. What she tried to do was to become popular. She has succeeded: it can be seen in the reaction of people of Tamil Nadu when the court verdict was pronounced. People were out in the street with many crying, beating their breasts and quite a few resorting to violence. It is highly disturbing that the head of the state has been found guilty in a criminal case; it is shocking that she has continued to be in office for 18 years after chargesheet was prepared against her. Amma Jayalalithaa can be right there in politics – she may not hold office – like Lalu Prasad is. The amount involved in his case is huge and after conviction, he is going around as if nothing has happened.

ACK in 1979, Morarji Desai was still the prime minister despite Charan Singh’s and Raj Narain’s tomfoolery. And Atal Behari Vajpayee was his foreign minister. While he was on an official visit to China, the Chinese attacked Vietnam. Immediately, Vajpayee cut short his visit and headed home. For, it was an affront to the visiting Indian foreign minister. Never mind that Vietnam was a Communist nation and a long-time ally of China till its recent estrangement. As a leading non-aligned country, Vajpayee felt that India must protest the attack against a fellow member of the non-aligned club. But the Chinese did one better this time, breaching the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Chumar, in Ladakh to coincide with the visit of President Xi Jinping to India. Now, Modi could not have refused to host Xi and asked him to return home. Of course, not. But he duly registered his protest in the strongest possible terms, virtually telling the unquestioned boss of China that it could no longer be business as usual if he failed to control his troops on the border. The Chinese were taken by surprise by Modi’s blunt talk. Xi sought to play down the incident on the LAC, promising to speak to the PLA commanders to find out the truth behind the stand-off on the disputed border. Since it still took a couple of days for the Chinese to actually withdraw, there was speculation that Xi, considered the strongest Chinese leader after Mao and Deng Xiaoping, still had to take full charge of the PLA. Otherwise, it is hard to explain the Chinese incursion on the Indian side of the LAC at a time when the Chinese President was on an official visit. In all probability, the Chinese incursion was a well thought out ploy meant to send a strong message that India cannot cosy up to Japan and Australia and still hope to increase economic cooperation with China. Since Modi is a strong leader, determined to play ‘catch-up’ with China, the need to keep India unsettled, nay, destabilized through periodic incidents at the disputed border, was the best way to divert vital resources and energies from economic growth. Though the Chinese economy was nearly five times bigger than India’s, Modi’s stated objective to fast-track economic growth could not have gone unnoticed in Beijing. Besides, Modi’s deprecation of the Chinese ‘expansionism’ while on a visit to Japan and his closer ties with Australia and the US may

The real basis is what you are thinking yourself at the moment. Never for one moment think that those who do wrong believe it to be right. It is not true; they do not believe it. They know it is wrong and yet they do it, out of weakness, lack of power, or lack of discrimination. They are not clear in their minds. There are not many who do wrong thinking that it is right. have raised Chinese concerns about an overarching alliance to contain China’s rising military and economic nuisance to the world at large. Thus, keeping India diverted from the urgent task of nation-building by periodic incidents at the LAC could well be the Chinese way of keeping this country on tenterhooks. How to counter this Chinese strategy on the disputed border is another headache for the Modi government. But one thing is clear. Unlike the previous UPA government which

ESPITE the drubbing in the polls, the arrogance, the hauteur of the Gandhis remains undiminished. While party vicepresident Rahul Gandhi disappears from the scene for weeks on end, with not even his close aides knowing his whereabouts, Sonia Gandhi refuses to make herself available easily to party men who desperately seek her intervention to resolve ticklish problems. Thus, a senior Congress functionary has been waiting for an audience with the deities at 10 Janpath for more than a month, while the entreaties of a senior leader from Maharashtra, keen to talk about Sharad Pawar’s alleged perfidy, for a meeting with the Congress president had fallen on deaf ears Even Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary, Ahmed Patel, no longer plays an active role in the day to day affairs of the party, though so long as the party was in power he was an important bridge between the Gandhis and party men. As a result, there is utter confusion in the Congress, with

MATTER & SPIRIT and the other end is in the mind of God. Therefore whatever people think about it, whether they think it right or wrong, one end of every impulse is in the heart of God. It is the spark that manifests in the heart of God first. Then it manifests outwardly. One might say, 'God cannot guide a person wrongly, because God is just and good and perfect.' God's justice and goodness and perfection cannot be compared with what we consider just and good and right. It may be that God's justice and what is considered right and perfect by God is thought imperfect and unjust by man, for the horizon of his vision is
every leader second-guessing what will please the Gandhis. The recent removal of Manish Tiwari and a couple of others from the panel of party spokespersons was a case in point. Ajay Maken, in charge of the media cell, removed Tiwari believing that it would please the Gandhis, though there was no way of knowing how the latter felt. If the truth be told, Maken suffers from an inferiority complex, specially when Tiwari is reluctant to be deferential to him even though he was the head of the media cell. Besides, Tiwari is far more articulate, far more clever than Maken while pitching for the Congress Party on the nightly television shows. So when Tiwari took a stand slightly different from that of the party on a court-related issue, Maken seized the alleged lapse and removed Tiwari from the panel of party spokespersons. This would not have happened had the Gandhis not played the absentee landlords of the party owned by them.
Stilted news and views continue
N
OT much has changed in the government-controlled media. The AIR has a new boss alright, but there is no change in the selection and delivery of news at all. Archana Dutta, head, AIR, News, was earlier attached with the former President Pratibha Patil and in that capacity had used the opportunity to see the world. Not one of the brightest sparks of the Central Information Service, Dutta had the temerity to suggest to editors not to publish certain columnists if they wanted to be included in the President’s media party on the latter’s foreign visits. But the cake is taken by the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha television channels. These continue to spew propaganda against the Modi Government. For instance, on Thursday, when the Prime Minister launched the ‘Make in India’ programme, a panel discussion on Rajya Sabha TV during the peak time virtually gave it a thumbsdown. Panelists were generally skeptical about Modi’s signature initiative, arguing that all that might happen is that it would give the industrialists another opportunity to exploit the country’s natural resources for further enriching themselves. This being the cynicism of the state-owned media, how can Modi expect ordinary people to keep faith in his policies and programmes? very narrow. He cannot imagine what God means by every action that takes place. In the Quran it is said that there is not one atom that moves without the command of God. All things are wrong or right, perfect or imperfect from our point of view. But our point of view is a narrow, small, limited point of view; we see and hear according to our eyes and ears; our ears cannot hear more than they can, our eyes cannot see farther than they can. If from our limited point of view we judge God's right and wrong, it is the greatest pity. On the other hand we cannot say that we should let everything happen as it does because everything happens according to God's right point of view. As individuals we have a certain responsibility, towards ourselves and towards others. And since the idea of justice and of what is right is given to us, we are responsible for acting in accordance with that idea. It may be that tomorrow there will be a greater light given to us so that we shall act still better. And in this way, by acting thus every day, we shall prove a better instrument for the work of God. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

IT is a timely order by the Bangalore court sentencing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to four years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 100 crore in the Rs 66 crore disproportionate assets case. Jayalalithaa has been involved in corrupt activities for many years and has betrayed the faith and trust of the people of Tamil Nadu. The fine must be recovered by selling her assets, she must be disqualified from her post under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The people of Tamil Nadu, whose money she has swallowed, must see to it that she languishes in the jail for the next four years. The higher courts must reject her appeal and uphold the order of the lower court and send her to jail to serve her sentence. This should be an example for others who have misused their position and office for their own personal gain and lowered the image of the country. — Bhagwan Thadani, via email

Jaya sentenced to jail
FAIR OR UNFAIR: While the circumstances under which Jayalalithaa was sentenced by the special court seem suspect, there is no doubt that she has been involved in corrupt activites for many years and has betrayed the people of Tamil Nadu.
I am very sceptical whether justice was done. The judgment was originally scheduled for the September 20 but was postponed to September 27. What happened in the intervening period? The judge has been unnecessarily harsh to the CM and makes one wonder whether everyone other than Jayalalithaa are saints. Karnataka has won. It has got the most vocal of the Cauvery issue behind bars. The previous CM, Karunanidhi, will bartereverything for his family. The judge, by one of his actions, has ensured that TN slips back which should be a happy moment for its neighbours. For the CM of a well-governed state to be sentenced by Karnataka for corrupt practices is an irony. It is also sad that Karunanidhi still roams free when his corruption is much more. Iron lady Jayalalithaa can make a forceful comeback and teach a lesson or two to her tormentors. It was a landmark achievement. We should be proud of our scientists on this historic occasion, instead of trying to get political mileage as pointed out by the Congress spokesperson. Devilishly debonair Dev Anand 'REMEMBERING the iconic Dev Anand' (September 26, ADC) by the Gaur duo is an excellent homage to the matinee idol, Dev Saab "who is still existent through his brilliant performances in (many) highly acclaimed movies". He was undoubtedly Bollywood's debonair star and full of life. He was an actor par excellence with his characteristic head shake, bigcollar shirts and loose-limb walks. I had seen all his films from 'Munimji' (1955) onwards and remember 'Kala Paani' (1958) in particular for that wonderful song, 'Achcha Ji Main Haari Chalo, Maan Jao Na'. 'Guide' was, of course, easily the best of all his films which his co-star Waheeda Rehman applauds even today. There have been many film-heroes, there are quite few now and there will be several in the years to come but there will be only one Dev Anand in the heart of the nation! — Dr V Subramanyan, Thane
DEV'S 91st: Dev Saab is still alive through his brilliant performances in many highly acclaimed movies and will live in the memories of his fans through the many Kishore Kumar songs he lent his face to.
It was Dev Anand’s 91 st birth anniversary, the actor whose name conjured up youthfulness, romance, style and sartorial elegance. He has left behind a treasure of memorable films containing songs which have found a permanent place in the heart of cine lovers. The Kishore-Dev songs are part of the legend that the man was. Dharam Dev Pishorimal Anand, alias Dev Anand played the lead character in 104 films and also produced 35 films under the banner of Navketan International. His journey which began with 'Hum Ek Hain' (1945), made by PL Santoshi, came to an end with his last film “ Chargesheet” (2011). He left for heavenly abode on December 3, 2011. 'Main Zindgi Ka Saath Nibhata Chala Gaya', 'Har Fikr Ko Dhuyen Main Udata Chala Gaya' and many other songs will always remain etched in the heart of millions of his fans. — Raju Vernekar, Andheri

across the country. "He is a rock star," said young college going Deepa Kaur. "We have a lot of expectations from him," she said. Never seen before, the organisers had lined up a number of cultural events including popular songs, folk dances. People were seen dancing to the tune of these cultural events, reports PTI. More than 200 media, a significantly large number of them from India, had registered for the event; which organisers said is unprecedented for an Indian American event. "He is the first Prime Minister who is connected to the NRI community. That's why you see such a large number of people. We filled up the seats in just two weeks. It has never happened in the history of the Madison Square Garden that seats gets filled up some three weeks before the event," said Anil Sharma, one of the volunteers of the event. In fact, more than 2,000 volunteers worked day and night for the past three weeks to make he program a success. "It's Modi Mania," said Ankit Patel. "It's a life time event," he said. In fact the event attracted some three dozen Congressmen including several power lawmakers like Senator Robert Menendez, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee; Congressman Ed Royce, Chairman of the House Foreign Relations Committee, and Congressman Ami Bera. South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Nisha Desai Biswal were also present. A huge contingent of Indian-American corporate leaders and IT professionals came in from the Silicon Valley for the mega event. The New York Times in a headline 'Indian Leader Narendra Modi, Once Unwelcome in US gets a Rock Star Reception' story yesterday wrote Modi will receive a rally fit for a rock star. Modi's fans were seen carrying the Indian tricolour and wore traditional Indian garb with several groups of performers carrying drums and 'dhols' to give him a rousing welcome. There was also a group of Tibetan women carrying banners in support of Modi. Strict security arrangements are in place with police barricades at several locations. There is also a large group of anti-Modi protesters who have gathered outside the garden shout-
ing slogans against the prime minister. They are carrying banners reading "Modi -- visa still denied", "Wanted Narendra Modi for crimes against humanity", "India must end oppression of minorities", "Hindutva will destroy India" - led by the Alliance for Justice and Accountability. Robindra Deb, an anti-Modi protester said, "We have gathered outside Madison Square Garden to remind the people of what happened in 2002 (Gujarat riots) under Modi's governance. Modi needs to be held accountable. Not the entire Indian American community supports him". Besides the main venue, there would be at least 50 other locations across the country where special arrangements have been made for the live telecast of the prime minister's speech and other events that include a nearly two-hour-long entertainment programme. At 16.4 per cent, Indian-Americans are the third largest AsianAmerican group in the US, numbering 2.8 million strong, which is almost 1 per cent of the US population.

EW YORK: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday joined a long but exclusive list of international singers and film stars among others who have spoken at the iconic Madison Square Garden here in the US. Also known as MSG or simply 'The Garden', Madison Square Garden is a multi-purpose indoor arena in Midtown Manhattan. Placed between 7th and 8th Avenues from 31st to 33rd Streets, it is situated atop Pennsylvania Station. The venue has played host to the who's who of the entertainment industry - from the evergreen band 'Beatles' and Elvis Presley to pop king Michael Jackson and Madonna to basketball games. CARE RATINGS VIEW
RBI BI-MONTHLY CREDIT POLICY TOMORROW
India’s economic report card for “H1-FY15 appears to be more robust than it did over corresponding, in the previous fiscal. With a 5.7% GDP growth in Q1-FY15 (4.7% in Q1 FY14) and significantly lower inflation along with a healthier external account balance, the fundamentals paint a good picture of the economy, albeit relativelyâ€? says Care Ratings. However, there has been a slow credit pick up in FY15 vis-Ă -vis FY14 levels and industrial production has not accelerated consistently as would have been desired. Against this background, the RBI is due to announce its bi-monthly credit policy tomorrow.

ill RBI change its policy stance given that CPI inflation has to be contained at 8% by January ’15 which in the festive season and expected pick-up in consumer demand would be tricky to attain if interest rates were to be lowered? Is there any room for a rate cut? Tomorrow will tell... In the meanwhile in a just released report, Care Ratings brings out the expectations from the ensuing credit policy announcement and subsequently lays out an interest rate outlook for the ongoing fiscal in view of certain key parameters. 10-yr G-Sec and Government Borrowing The 10 year Government Security so far this year has been moving downwards. It has fallen to be around 8.49% from its 8.8% – 8.9% level at the start of the fiscal. The new 8.40% paper was introduced in the end of July ’14 following which yields have remained particularly lower. Government has envisaged a total of Rs 6 lakh Crore borrowings in FY15, of which Rs 3.68 lakh Crore was to be borrowed in H1-FY15. However, the actual borrowings stand lower at Rs 3.38 lakh Crore. Liquidity position thus appears to be comfortable as the Government is to repurchase a total of securities worth Rs 20,000 Crore indicating there is in fact excess liquidity.
Overtly, it appears as if the Government will potentially indulge in lower market borrowings than the initially estimated Rs 6 lakh Crore in the Budget for FY15. This will ofcourse depend on the inflow of taxes especially those linked to industrial production and imports.
INFLATION THREAT
Inflation at the wholesale and retail level has moderated from the levels at the start of the current fiscal. However, inflation has admittedly been tamed to a large extent due to a high base effect as well as the markedly lower fuel prices globally in recent months compared with months earlier in FY15. While there has been reduction in inflation measures (WPI and CPI), the current level of CPI inflation is still high. The RBI is looking to rein in CPI inflation to a target of 8% by January ‘15 and with CPI still at 7.8% as of August ‘14, inflation worries are not alleviated yet. Further, there remain certain upward threats to inflation going ahead: Firstly, it remains to be seen how the subnormal and delayed monsoon this year influences crop produce this harvest season, the effect of which will be seen in the agricultural products prices in Q3 and Q4 FY15. The Ministry of Agriculture has indicated that production of coarse cereals, pulses, oilseeds, sugarcane would be lower than that last year. Secondly, currently there is a supply glut in the
oil market; any untoward geo-political development in the OPEC region can trigger a price rise, which will have a strong bearing on domestic oil prices and overall inflation basket.
LIQUIDITY MANAGEMENT Continued on pg 14 Âť
<< What’s on RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan’s mind?
Given the above economic parameters of improving growth of 5.7% (Q1 FY15) GDP and elevated retail inflation on the back of potential threats to inflation going ahead, we do not foresee any room for a rate cut in the upcoming policy announcement. On the other hand, we expect RBI to maintain the repo rate at 8%. It looks unlikely that RBI will change its policy stance given that CPI inflation has to be contained at 8% by January ’15 which in the festive season and expected pick-up in consumer demand would be tricky to attain if interest rates were to be lowered. A cut in SLR could be there more to ease LAF access to banks at the margin, as the system still has surplus SLR securities. On the Interest rate front, The 10 year Government security is expected to remain within the 8.4% - 8.6% range. Further, as an external factor any rate hike by the Fed in 2015 can cause it to move upwards. Further, a pick-up in credit relative to deposit growth in the second half of the ongoing fiscal and during the festive season may push interest rates upwards. A downward movement would be possible once the RBI cuts the repo rate.

othing works better than good word-of-mouth. News of super customer satisfaction spreads like wildfire. The Brand Professional should do everything in his power to give his customers a good Brand Experience and make them approve of his words and deeds. He should leave no stone unturned to win the admiration of his customer. The ultimate is when the customer becomes Brand Professional’s salesperson. When Brand Provision becomes praiseworthy, that’s just what happens. News of a job well done spreads like fragrance and good Customer Service certainly deserves praise. The word-of mouth publicity is more effective than crores of rupees spent on advertising. The names of surgeons who do a terrific job saving the lives of their patients ripple across hospitals and soon the good word-ofmouth of the Brand experience results in new patients seeking them out. Similarly, the Telemarketing Executive who listens patiently, is responsive, returns calls and ultimately gets the job done with regularity and through good Brand Experience is praiseworthy. Praiseworthy Customer Service demands that the Customer Service Professional do a good job constantly. It is not a one-off job that is well done. To be praiseworthy requires constant good effort on the part of the Customer Service Professional. If Sachin Tendulkar is the Brand Professional, his customers are cricket-crazy audiences. His regular high scores on the field and the entertaining Brand Experience he provided made him the world’s best batsman. As a result, he has a formidable fan following and can be relied upon to entertain his customers. Like Sachin, Aamir Khan too is a Praiseworthy Brand Professional. The actor’s string of hits from Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak to Dhoom 3: Back in Action and many more have endeared him to his customers, the audience, who are his fans responsible for the houseful boards every time an Aamir Khan Bollywood blockbuster hits the billboard. If the customer is the spectator, the Brand Professional is the cricketer. For all the thousands of doctors, politicians, teachers, actors and cricketers, there are but a handful that deliver more often than not and provide consistently good Brand Experiences. Those whose success rates are above average sometimes make it to the praiseworthy category. From among thousands of doctors who treat patients, there are the few whose mission it is to cure. From among the many politicians, there is a minuscule lot that rises to the level of statesmen. From among the several hundred actors, there are few stars that make dreams come true and enthrall their audience. From among the cricketers down the ages, there are a few who can shoulder the responsibility of kindling hope in the hearts of millions of fans. These are the Praiseworthy Brand Professionals. S&P Upgrade To Boost Sentiment MUMBAI | MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2014
S
By A Business reporter
tandard & Poor's Ratings Services revised its outlook on India to stable from negative on Friday , and the markets which were in the red flared up by 150 odd points in the matter of an hour. Clearly, with the revision sentiment has got a boost and reflectings good tidings for the equity markets in the coming days. S&Ps outlook revision reflects its view that India's improved political setting offers a conducive environment for reforms, which could boost growth prospects and improve fiscal management. According to the rating giant “The ratings on India reflect the country's strong external profile, combined with its democratic institutions and free press, both of which underpin policy stability and predictability. These strengths are balanced against the vulnerabilities stemming from the country's low per capita income and weak public finances. India's external position is a key credit strength. The country has relatively little external debt and a much improved external liquidity position. We project that, at the fiscal year end of March 31, 2015, external debt net of external assets will be 6% of current account receipts (CARs). Central bank reserves well exceed public sector external debt, reflecting the public sector's ability to finance practically all of its borrowing requirement domestically. On a broader definition, India's net external liabilities are a low 49% of CARs based on our projections at the end of the current fiscal year in March 2015, and nearly half of gross external liabilities consist of inbound foreign direct investments. India's current account has improved in recent years after restrictions on gold imports and slower domestic investment demand. At the same time, the central bank rebuilt its foreign currency reserves to cover about 5.5 months of current account payments. Although we expect the current account deficit to widen from its current low of 1.8% of GDP (as of March 2014) as investment picks up, gross external financing needs are likely to remain at or below the sum of CARs plus usable reserves in the next two to three years. India's well-entrenched democratic political system is another credit support. That, along with the country's mature and stable institutions (including free press) and system of checks and balances, has afforded India a long period of stability. Although the paralyzing effect of legislative gridlock can blunt government effectiveness, our outlook revision
indicates that we believe the current government's strong mandate will enable it to implement many of its administrative, fiscal, and economic reforms”. India's low wealth level, as measured by per capita GDP, is one of the main constraints on the rating. At US$1,550, India's per capita GDP implies a narrow tax and funding base upon which the sovereign can draw to carry a given debt burden, and a lower degree of policy flexibility in the event that dramatic measures are needed to address severe economic stress. Real per capita GDP growth, a measure of the economy's capacity to increase wealth, has dipped to about 4% currently, from an average of 7.2% in the five years to the end of the fiscal year ended March 2011. We believe the current administration will remedy, to varying degrees, the growth impediments--policy paralysis, energy supply bottlenecks, and administrative obstacles. The government's actions will likely add momentum to the incipient cyclical upswing evident in the economy. We project real per capita GDP growth to reach 5% by next year, and per capita GDP to surpass US$2,000 by 2017. India's weak public finances are manifested in a long history of general government fiscal deficits, averaging 8.8% of GDP over the past 20 years, and an accumulated net general government debt stock of close to 70% of GDP. Prior governments have not been able to broaden India's revenue base (with general government revenue at about 21% of GDP, of which only half are taxes) or trim expenditure. India's budget is saddled with extensive subsidies for food, energy, and fertilizer. More than 90% of general government debt is denominated in rupees. This debt stock is primarily held by domestic banks and other financial institutions, often for regulatory requirements. The Indian government's foreign currency debt comes
Room For A Rate Cut? Continued from pg 13 »
Since the recommendation of the Dr. Urjit Patel Committee in December ’13, RBI has gradually shifted to managing liquidity through term repo auctions. This was with a view to better the transmission mechanism of the monetary policy as also to adequately manage the flow of liquidity across the spectrum. Currently there appears to be less
pressure on liquidity in the banking system as the aggregate deposits across banks stands at Rs 81,32,710 Crore as of 24th September 2014, while the amount outstanding through the various repo borrowings stands at Rs 68,305 Crore. Given the 1% of NDTL exposure for LAF, there is a sufficient window upto an additional Rs 13,022 Crore approximately to further make available for repo borrowings.
from official lenders. Thus we see little foreign exchange or roll-over risk for the government. Although real interest rates have been consistently negative, the interest cost on government debt amounts to almost a quarter of government revenues. Fiscal flexibility is further constrained by the general shortage of infrastructure and basic government services. We expect the new administration to adhere to its stated fiscal consolidation program, even though we acknowledge that planned revenues may not fully materialize and subsidy cuts may be delayed. We expect improved fiscal performance in the medium term primarily from revenue-side improvements brought about by the planned introduction of a national goods and services tax (GST) and administrative efforts to expand the tax base. We project net general government debt to decline to below 60% of GDP by the year ending March 2018, and with it, general government interest rate expense to just under 20% of revenues. A faster pace of deficit and debt reduction is unlikely in our view. Hence, we believe fiscal and debt metrics are set to remain key rating constraints for some time. The stable outlook for the next 24 months reflects our view that the new government has both the willingness and capacity to implement reforms necessary to restore some of India's lost growth potential, consolidate its fiscal accounts, and permit the Reserve Bank of India to carry out effective monetary policy. We could raise the rating if the economy reverts to a real per capita GDP trend growth of 5.5% per year and fiscal, external, or inflation metrics improve. Conversely we may lower the rating if the government's structural reform agenda stalls such that economic growth does not accelerate, or fiscal and debt ratios fail to improve.
CREDIT, DEPOSIT AND INVESTMENT
H1-FY15 has been characterized with low credit growth relative to deposit growth. As of 5th September 2014, credit growth stood at 2.4% as against 6.4% over the corresponding period in the previous fiscal. Deposit growth is comparatively higher at 5.9% as of 5th September 2014 compared with 5.5% over the corresponding period in FY14. Credit off take has remained low. However there are expectations that this might reverse as the festive season nears.

re you a new entrant to capital markets, have limited time and knowledge of markets or interested in exploring more areas for investment in markets, then mutual fund is the right product for you. With equity markets inching higher in past couple of months ever since new government was formed at the center, equity funds would be one to be chosen for short, medium and long term investments. Equity funds give an opportunity for the investor to invest in sector based, index and
market cap based funds though risk involved in these funds would be high. Performance of mid and small cap funds are seen to be good now and in the near future as there are many stocks that form a part of mid and small cap funds portfolio with strong fundamentals are making new highs which in turn increases the returns on these funds. For 3 to 5 years time horizon, investors can choose to invest in Franklin India Smaller Companies Fund or ICICI Prudential Value discovery fund for an expected return of around 20% p.a. With increase in long term capital gain tax on debt funds to 20%, benefits of debt funds have lost its charm. In equity funds, investments held more than year is tax free which means that returns from these funds will not be attracted to tax. This also gives an opportunity to an investor to earn more. With increase in section 80C limit to Rs.1,50,000 under income tax from this year, investors can take the benefit of investing in tax savings funds which is again a equity fund. However, there would be a lock-in of 3 years for these funds. Reliance Tax Saver fund is a well
performing fund under this category with an expected return of 15% p.a. Investors could also opt for a unit linked insurance schemes, which gives the benefit of mutual fund investments along with insurance. Though insurance cover on these funds may be less, advantage of these funds is that even investors over 45 years of age, where premium
on insurance will be high, can get a life cover at a very low premium by investing in these funds. Premium for your insurance and mutual fund investment will be go as one single amount as an SIP or a lumpsum amount (as chosen by investor) and get double benefit of returns on investment and a life cover. UTI Unit linked insurance plan and LIC Nomura Unit linked insurance could be a good investment under unit linked insurance category. For those in business where one would receive a lump sum amount could invest in liquid funds like short and ultra short term mutual funds. Investments in these funds start from a minimum of 1 day to 1 year. These funds are good for investing when you need to park lumpsum funds for a very short period and still earn better returns. These could also be looked as an investment option for non-business oriented class of people too where funds for contingencies can be invested in funds as these are highly liquid in nature, it can be redeemed in a few hours. Before investing in any mutual fund scheme, be clear of your investment objective to get the best benefit from your investment.

t was an event driven week for the Indian Rupee, as the pair got knocked-off by the recent ruling from Supreme Court on cancellation of coal blocks. On account of the court ruling, Indian stocks came under the hammer and Rupee depreciated. Rupee touched fresh 6 week low of 61.62 levels on spot but exporter selling and then news of S&P upgrading India’s rating outlook to stable pushed it back towards 61.00 levels. Rupee closed around 61.16/17 levels on spot. Globally US Dollar has appreciated against most currencies but against the Indian rupee, gains have been subdued. The outperformance of the Rupee could be hurting our exports, evidenced from the anemic growth in merchandise exports. Rating agency, Standard and Poors’ upgraded outlook of India’s sovereign rating from negative to stable. Such an outlook means that now there is less likelihood of a downgrade in sovereign rating from BBB-. S&P said, “We could raise the rating if the economy reverts to a real per capita GDP trend growth of 5.5% per
year and fiscal, external, or inflation metrics improve. The stable outlook for the next 24 months reflects our view that the new government has both the willingness and capacity to implement reforms necessary to restore some of India's lost growth potential, consolidate its fiscal accounts, and permit the RBI to carry out effective monetary policy". In other news from the domestic markets, the Supreme Court on Wednesday cancelled all but four coal block allocations, made by successive governments over the past two decades, on the grounds of illegality under the Coal Mining Nationalisation Act. The decision is estimated to impact around Rs 2.85 lakh crore worth of investments linked to the 214 coal blocks and their end-use plants. The four coal blocks have however escaped the hammer, viz., Reliance Power's Sasan ultra mega power project, and government-owned NTPC and SAIL. The order said though the allotment of 42 of 46 coal blocks were quashed, the cancellation would take effect only after six months, with effect from March 31, 2015. According to the court, the estimated loss is Rs. 295 per tonne of coal and the compensatory payment on this basis should be made by the companies which had commenced extraction within three months and, in
any case, on or before December 31, 2014. The coal extracted hereafter till March 31, 2015, will also attract the additional levy of Rs. 295/tonne. The Government is expected to mop up Rs. 8,000-10,000 crore through this compensatory payment. In global economy, Chinese manufacturing survey called the flash PMI improved in September indicating ongoing expansion, but at a slower pace. However, apart from the PMI many of the high speed indicators out of China have continued to point towards a slowing domestic economy. Euro zone as a whole saw both flash manufacturing and services PMI slowed down but still in expansionary phase. In Euro zone, M3-money supply growth showed improvement in August but private sector credit creation remained in the contraction zone. German business survey from the IFO institute continued to point towards an ebbing business confidence. US economic data was mixed with US existing home sales in August and consumer confidence in September failing to beat expectation. However, new homes sales rose quite impressively in August and US economic growth was revised upwards for Q2 to 4.6% annualized. Over the years, US Dollar used to do the job of being the carry currency and as a result, every time the US Dollar Index used to weaken, financial

assets, as well as commodities, used to appreciate and vice versa. However, with the shift in the carry source towards Euro and Yen, nowadays, a weakness in the two drives the financial assets higher, like emerging market equities. However, commodities and bullion are unable to participate in the asset reflation game, as they are priced and traded in US Dollars and at the same time, a subdued Chinese economic growth is also acting as a headwind. Therefore, financial assets like equities have become the single largest beneficiary of the Euro/Yen carry trade. Interestingly, over the last one year, the gross narrow money injection from the major global central banks have slowed down, from USD 150/160 billion per month, during Autumn of last year, to USD 65/70 billion per month now. At the same time we have seen a drop in the global economic momentum over the last few months and at the same time, certain sections of the risk assets in the developed world have started to lose upward momentum. We believe, central bank monetary coolant remains a major driver of global economy and at the same time global equities and credit markets. Therefore, it is no surprise that loss of monetary coolant has coincided with the loss of momentum in the world economy and some parts of financial markets. Over the near term, Indian Rupee is expected to play within a range of 60.80/61.00 and 61.70/62.00 on spot. We can see strong demand surface for the US Dollar, below 61.00 handle, as RBI may be committed to support the Greenback on the back of unfavourable exchange rate for exports.

Vinay Kumar Agrawal is a post graduate in management with specialization in finance. With a strong hold on accounting, corporate finance and capital markets he started his career as a research analyst and has also mastered the dynamics of agricultural commodity based derivatives in India. His vast knowledge of equity markets and understanding of the intricacies of stock trading qualifies him as a Market Wizard. In conversation with Dominic Rebello he reveals that he relies more on technical analysis for short term trades...
How do you pick your trades/investments? Do you use technical analysis, or employ fundamental data? I enjoy being a technical analyst whereby, I rely more on technical analysis on short term trades. For long term investing I rely on fundamentals. Generally to pick a trade I focus on a confluence of technical indicators.
How would you describe your methodology? Technical analysis and the usage of statistics form the crux of my research and trading methodology. However in case of any news events, technicals might not support and to augment my analysis I keep abreast of fundamentals and news. What appeals to you about trading? The short side or the long side? I am a strong believer of trends being an analyst’s best friend. So, I am not biased on long or short side. My philosophy is market will always provide opportunity in either direction.
The most populous city in India and the fifth most populous city in the world, the business hub of India, Mumbai is getting congested and expensive day by day. In a dynamic city like Mumbai, significant development is talking place across all sectors --- right from education to healthcare, hospitality to tourism and technology to infrastructure etc. As the main city is getting costlier day by day, there is an opportunity to develop the nearby urban areas into smart cities. These will not only help people to enjoy a better lifestyle but also will help them with employment and business opportunities in various sectors and a dwelling at affordable cost, right at their door step. Lot of development projects have already been
What would make you wary about a trade ? When I take position based on technical analysis and if any negative fundamental event occurs I am cautious about that trade.
Do you have a scenario about how the current bull will end? Where do you see the Indian markets five years down the road? Any number for the Sensex in 2015? Markets are seeing some correction in the current situation, which could give opportunities for many investors to enter in to the market. With government taking better decisions and economy seen improving, Nifty could be expected to breach 9000 levels by end of next year. Sensex could be seen around 29,800 30,100 levels.
At what point had you given a thought to making a career in the financial markets? I belong to a family with a finance background and my keen interest was always towards finance and accounting. During my graduation days, I started following the markets and slowly gained experience and interest in making a career in research.
What differentiates you from other traders?
When you put money on a trade and it goes against you, how do you decide when you're wrong? What do you do next? When things go against me, I accept that my rationale was wrong. I just take my pre-decided losses and enter again as and if I find another opportunity.
The most important thing is to take losses and get out in case of a bad trade, where many traders do not exit and take more losses.
and follow your rules.

asai- Virar is one of the fastest growing and fifth largest city in Maharashtra. It is situated in the North-West of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is the Vasai-Virar region which covers 9.5% of MMR and also includes the Municipal councils of Virar, Vasai, Nallasopara, Navghar – Manikpur and Naigaon, with a population of more than 12 lakh people. The population growth rate of Vasai-Virar region has been higher than Greater Mumbai and MMR region, indicating shift of population to these areas. The migration rate of Vasai-Virar has been at par with cities like Noida, a satellite city to the national capital of India. This shift clearly indicates the willingness of people to shift to areas like Vasai-Virar due to the development that has taken place in this region during the last decade. The Vasai-Virar region has also been identified as one of the eight satellite cities by central government.
INFRASTRUCTURE
The Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) has been instrumental in the rapid development of the Vasai-Virar region. An annual budget of Rs. 1,266 crore towards infrastructural development has been presented in 2012. Even the ministry of Urban Development has taken Vasai-Virar under the Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Satellite Towns making it the only city from Maharashtra to be taken under this scheme.
CONNECTIVITY
Vasai- Virar is strategically linked to Mumbai and other major centers in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, such as, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Thane, Bhiwandi and Kalyan, via high-end rail & road connectivity. The MumbaiAhmedabad National Highway (NH8) passes through the eastern part of the region and the city is also well connected by the western and central railway. Also, with the proposed elevated rail corridor between Churchgate-Virar and the Bandra-Virar coastal corridor, the road journey will be curtailed to an hour. No other city in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region/peripheral locations provides such connectivity. Upcoming projects also include transport initiatives 40 metres wide 36 kms long ring road running through SativaliGokhivra-Vasai, Pelhar- Waliv-Gokhivra. New railway routes are also planned for Virar-Vasai-Diva-

What is your take on the current market scenario, Indian as well as global? Markets are seeing some correction, which gives buying opportunities for the investors in India. Market participants fear about a rate hike in US which caused outflows in India, but according to me any rate hike by US Fed before expected time will be a signal that US economy is improving. Also on the domestic front, revival in the economy is being seen. In such conditions we can expect this bull-run to continue.

SOCIAL AMENITIES
Vasai-Virar based Late Shri Vishnu Waman Thakur Charitable Trust started schools and colleges, constructed hospitals and supported residents of Vasai-Virar area. In the year 2000, the trust established the Viva College with affiliation to the University of Mumbai and admits all students from the Vasai-Virar region. Commerce, Science, Management, Engineering, Technology, Hotel & Tourism Management, Architecture, and Pharmacy. The college also offers an exchange program to leading Universities like George Washington University, Washington D.C. USA. VVMC started the first ever municipal hospital in Vasai-Virar. In the pipeline are 21 health care centers and a 21 lakh sq. ft. hospital. VVMC has also ensured that Vasai-Virar witnesses wholesome growth. The region has 83 lakes out of
which VVMC has developed 21 lakes and are currently working on 09 lakes. The region also has 71 parks which are either being renovated or restored.
COMMERCE
The upcoming Virar-Alibaug corridor is a single corridor having a length of 126 kilometers which will incorporate multiple modes of transport such as buses, BRT, metro rails, cars and non-motorized tracks. The alignment of the corridor has been designed in a manner to promote planned development in the Virar, Kalyan, Navi-Mumbai and Alibaug areas. The MMRDA has pegged the cost of the project at Rs. 10,000 crore (USD 1600 Million) in 2013.
THE FUTURE CITY
Over the last decade, the Vasai-Virar region has been witnessing a rapid growth in infrastructure along with steady influx of population. The rail and roadways have strengthened by manifolds in and around the entire region. These two factors combined together have paved way for a steady economic and industrial growth. These facilities are a necessity for any city to flourish as a commercial hub as well as residential township. The last decade has seen the city take giant steps in laying the bricks for a strong foundation that will continue to make the city a place that provides excellent opportunities for individuals and companies, not only to contribute to the growing economy of a strong nation but also fulfill the dreams of millions. Cities are built to give dreams a place to grow bigger and better and in the coming decade the future city of Vasai-Virar will arrive turning those into reality.

SANJAY R. BHATIA
T
he markets are placed at crossroads and poised crucially. Though the Nifty bounced back from two critical levels on Friday, the Nifty’s 50-day SMA and the 7874 support level, it is important that the Nifty continues to sustain over these levels for any uptrend to unfold. The markets however are likely to remain volatile and choppy and would struggle to find a secular direction as the ADX line, +DI line and –DI line are still converging and a decisive breakout is awaited. The key oscillators are placed below their respective averages, which is a negative sign for the markets. However, the Nifty is still placed above its 50-day SMA, 100-day SMA and 200-day SMA which is the saving grace for the markets. Now it is important that the markets witness follow up buying support at higher levels for fresh rally to unfold. In case the Nifty breaches its 50-day SMA and remains below it then the markets could fall further and test the 7540 level, which remains an important support level for the markets. The support levels for Nifty are placed at 7874, 7568, 7540, 7422 and 7118 levels. The Nifty faces resistance at 8049, 8142, 8181, 8200 and 8250 Stock Pick BUY M&M (1393) above 1397, Stop Loss 1373, Target 1450 M&M is displaying a positive trend. It is displaying a higher top higher bottom formation. It is placed above its 200-day SMA, which is its long-term moving average and is a positive sign for the stock. The RSI is placed above its average. M&M is likely to move higher and test its previous high placed at 1434 and move above it.

hola Healthline Plan is a health insurance plan which is designed to cater to the needs of individuals universally as it comes in 3 different versions. Every option is different with different benefits giving the investor ample flexibility to choose a plan more suitable to him. How it works –The plan provides a comprehensive coverage under 3 different plan options: Value Plan Freedom Plan Enrich Plan All the plan options cover pre and post hospitalization expenses, day care treatments, ambulance expenses, organ donor expenses, etc with other varied benefits. It provides coverage for Ayush Benefits as well even in the basic Value Plan Option. The plan comes on an Individual as well as Family Floater basis and covers self, spouse, dependent children, dependent parents, parentsin-law and siblings on Individual Sum Assured basis and self, spouse and dependent children on floater Sum Assured basis. There is a Unique Benefit of Double Sum Insured for 14 Critical Illnesses and Accident in the Enrich Plan option which makes the plan more comprehensive. Double Sum Insured Benefit: This benefit promises double Sum Insured to the policyholder for 14 covered Critical Illnesses and any accident. This enhances the coverage amount and is useful in cases when the cover gets exhausted in any claim year. Let us explain this with an example. Suppose the policyholder has a Sum Assured of Rs 4 lakhs and suffers from any named Critical Illness where the claim amount is say 6 lakhs. In that scenario, the Double SI benefit will come into effect and the entire claim of 6 lakhs will be paid by the insurer even when the coverage was for only 4 lakhs. If another claim happens within the same year for the policyholder’s wife, claim up to 2 lakhs will be paid by the insurer only if the claim occurs as a result of a named Critical Illness or accident.
The concept of insurance is that it covers unknown risks and not known ones. However it will still cover all your ailments after the certain waiting period is over. Since there is no written down strict procedure for any underwriting conditions, you need to apply and then check whether the same is covered. It depends on the risk taking capacity of the Insurance Company but it makes sense to reveal the truth instead of hiding it so that there is no fear of non disclosure or misrepresentation of material truth. Are you open to doing reality shows? Yes, of course! I would love to do a dance reality show. I also want to host a show because it’s spontaneous and interesting. I basically want to do everything.
Who are your favorite Bollywood stars? Amitabh Bachchan is a millennium star, he’s just so perfect! Irrfan khan and KK Menon I follow because they are very original. They are easygoing actors, so I love following them. When it comes to Bollywood actresses, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra are the kind of a rare combination of beauty with excellent acting skills. Would you like to get into films? Yes, Of course. I would like to do a
film that showcases my talent. I have done a few films like 'Let’s Dance' (2009) which was directed by Aarif Sheikh. Another movie was 'Aamras' directed by Rupali Guha. What are your strengths as an actor? Here I would say I’m still trying to explore myself and growing as an actor.
What do you watch on television? I’m not a regular TV viewer, but if I get the time, I like watching 'Zindagi Gulzar Hai' on Zee Zindagi. I even like watching my earlier show, 'Love Story'. People remember me from that show.

Apurva plays a character inflicted with OCD
ctor Apurva Agnihotri says his new show 'Ajeeb Daastaan Hai Ye' costar and Bollywood actress Sonali Bendre, who is making her debut in fiction, is a wonderful actress and very childlike. After bidding adieu to films, Sonali is frequently seen on TV as a judge on reality shows, but with the Ekta Kapoor's new show she has jumped onto the daily soap bandwagon. "I am lucky that Sonali is making her fiction debut opposite me. I am a fan. She is a wonderful actress. She has so much of experience behind her but on the sets she is very childlike," Apurva told PTI. 'Ajeeb Daastaan Hai Ye' is an unusual, heart-warming story of two strangers – Shobha (Sonali) and Vikram (Apurva) who meet each other by luck and bond. It will go on air from early next month. The 41year-old 'Jassi Jaissi Koi Nhi' actor says his character is one of the most challenging roles of his career because it has got many layers. "My character, Vikram, is very different from the roles I did in the past. He has got multiple layers. I just pray that I can live up to Ekta's expectations. The character has got OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), he very mean towards people and is also animated at times. The journey of the role is tough," he said. This is the first time that Apurva is teaming up with Ekta, who has helped in a big way to shape his wife Shilpa Sakhlani's career.

Gurdeep, who is best known for portraying Dr Juhi Singh in medical soap opera 'Sanjivani', says she took up the role because it was an out-and-out negative role. "I am happy that I am back. It's completely a dark character unlike negative roles which are generally grey. It becomes more challenging to make a comeback with such kind of roles, which you have never portrayed before. I hope people will like me the way they loved my previous characters. My last full-fledged role was in 'Kasamh Se'," Gurdeep told PTI. The 'ABC' host says the role is performance-driven and she would be seen in many disguises. "Even my entry to the show is in the 'Raavan' avatar. It's exciting to don so many parts. It didn't need any special preparation. It's just an understanding of the subject. Moreover, we have seen so much in our films," said Gurdeep. NOTES FROM NEW DELHI
Santosh Bharatiya
S
omething or the other usually happens after defeat in elections. Some signals are there, some lessons are there. On September 13, Assembly by-elections took place in three states of the country – Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat. And when the results came on September 16, then the scene was something like this: the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was just not acknowledging the importance of these by-elections and those who had won, they were calling it a sign of the future. Before the results came, the BJP was claiming it would win all the seats because it had fought the whole election on Narendra Modi’s name. The design in Uttar Pradesh was amazing. Here, the Bharatiya Janata Party, changing all the issues, adopted the strategy of communal polarisation and handed over the election reins to Yogi Adityanath. Yogi Adityanath pushed forward the agenda of the Hindu Mahasabha on the lines of the RSS and began raising slogans of uniting Hindus. The attacks on the Muslim community increased tension. He said that where Muslims are more than 10 per cent, it is there that communal riots take place. After this there was Love Jihad, which he publicised without any hesitation and gave the indication that Hindu society will not at any cost accept a relationship of any daughter of its with any Muslim boy. Now Sushil Kumar Modi has said that Yogi Adityanath is not the face of the BJP. However, Sushil Kumar Modi had lost the election in Bihar and voices against him in the BJP have become sharper, whereas in Uttar Pradesh the demand for handing over leadership of the State to Varun Gandhi have started to be raised, so that he can be presented as the future Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. By-elections of Assemblies give many signals. The first signal is that Uttar Pradesh has shown the line of thinking of the people of the country – that the Hindu community doesn’t like any kind of campaign of hate and communal polarisation. It has also showed that Narendra Modi’s issues of corruption, inflation and unemployment got votes, not an agenda of dividing the country into Hindus and Muslims. From this perhaps the Sangh (RSS) and the BJP would
have received the signal to do a rethink on the issues of Section 370, the Common Civil Code and the Ram Mandir. The public in the country wants to get rid of their problems, doesn’t want quarrels and fights. Perhaps the BJP and Narendra Modi don’t want to understand one more fact. That fact is that in the Lok Sabha elections there were only two ‘poles’, Narendra Modi on one side and on the other side, the fragmented, reluctant-to-fight-elections Congress and its leader Rahul Gandhi. There was no third option at all. In these Assembly by-elections, people got a third option. In Uttar Pradesh, Mulayam Singh Yadav showed that the victory in Bihar was not a victory gained by default and maybe that is why on September 14 a closed
Chaudhary Devilal. Everybody will be going to that public meeting. Maybe this would be the first step of the Janata Parivar coming close to each together and it is a coincidence that when in 1987 the foundation of the Janata Party was laid down, the then Chief Minister and biggest leader of Haryana, Chaudhary Devilal, was the leader of the movement. Today the former Chief Minister of Haryana, Om Prakash Chautala, is doing the work of taking forward this movement. In the meeting Nitish Kumar asked everyone this question: if we don’t come together, then what is the option? And nobody had the answer to it. Almost everybody agreed with Nitish’s point that people of the Janata Parivar should come together and give each other support in their States.
Now it seems that preparations of a new option forming will begin in Jind, in which there will not be one party, but one front and the basic principle of this front will be that nobody will interfere in anybody else’s State. The results in Uttar Pradesh have given all these leaders new zeal and if this Janata front gets formed, then definitely it will have to be accepted that a big challenge will arise for the current ruling party of the country, the BJP. There is the possibility that the BJP will try its utmost to break this Janata front that is to be formed and make a strategy to take one or two leaders from it with itself. To taste the small grape fruit of power by spending all its earnings, probably no one would want that this time. These

DILLI KA BABU The Big One
Ajit Seth
Saurabh Chandra
The extended tenure of Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth is ending and the Modi sarkar is scouting for his replacement, reportedly to take over from Seth in mid-October. Seth, it may be recalled, was slated to retire in June but was given a six month extension by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he took office. Sources say that though Modi retained Seth, he has been searching for a suitable replacement. It is clear that the next Cabinet Secretary will have to be someone not just eligible but also attuned to the Prime Minister’s approach to governance. Apparently, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has shortlisted Rajasthan Chief Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi, Petroluem Secretary Saurabh Chandra and Shipping Secretary Vishwapati Trivedi for the coveted position. But there could be surprises, too, since the decision is the Prime Minister’s to make, and Modi chooses his babus with care. So, unlikely that others who are considering a shot at the position will give up their efforts to make it to the list. But who will ultimately win, only Modi currently knows.

door meeting was held in New Delhi, which no one in the media got to know about. In that closed door meeting Nitish Kumar, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Sharad Yadav, Om Prakash Chautala, Kamal Morarka, Shivpal Singh Yadav and K.C. Tyagi were present. In this meeting, there was deep deliberation on whether an attempt should be made to bring together the Janata Parivar. Almost everybody agreed that if the Janata Parivar had been one, then neither would communal polarisation have happened in the country and nor would the BJP have ruled the country by getting 282 seats so easily. In the meeting, the fact came to light that there are approximately 155 such MPs who had never remained joined with the BJP. They joined the BJP only in this election. That means out of 282 MPs, half the MPs are such who didn’t have a relationship with the BJP. The key happening at this meeting should be considered this: that it was decided that the old Janata Parivar be gathered together and everybody should help each other. In this meeting itself Om Prakash Chautala invited everybody to a public meeting in Jind on the 100th death anniversary of
On September 14 when this meeting was going on, then in everybody’s mind there was the thought: what will happen in the by-elections in Uttar Pradesh? Nitish Kumar himself asked Mulayam Singh Yadav this question, that day after tomorrow i.e. on September 16 when the results will come, then what will happen in Mainpuri and in the other 11 places? Mulayam Singh looking in Shivpal Singh’s direction, said that Shivpal will give the answer to this. Shivpal Singh in his unassuming manner said that in Mainpuri we will win, like we used to win when Mulayam Singhji was the candidate, and at other places too we will win at least six seats. Along with Nitish Kumar everybody’s opinion was that if you win even two seats, then people will believe that you got victory over the BJP. Everybody gave the same single reason that all these 11 seats were seats of victorious BJP MLAs. On this Shivpal Singh’s answer was that maybe we will also win more than six seats and when the results came on September 16, then the Samajwadi Party had won eight Assembly seats and one Lok Sabha seat.
by-elections have also conveyed to the people of the Janata Parivar that now they can even move their steps forward in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, the only condition being that everybody comes together honestly and in the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections, support Om Prakash Chautala. Thereafter, support Nitish Kumar in the Bihar Assembly elections and then support Mulayam Singh Yadav in the Assembly elections in the most important State of Uttar Pradesh. What line history is going to write on this page of politics nobody knows yet, but if politicians gave an example of honesty, then those lines can be amazing. One has to be cautious only of this much that no one should conspire to pull another’s leg, because it has been seen that when together, every person tries to be big and when the same person goes to the camp of the Congress or the BJP, then meekly, without speaking, tolerates everything happily and gives arguments too for justifying it to be right. It has to be seen in what manner the people of the Janata Parivar behave this time – give each other support or throw dirt into each other's eye.
Former CAG Vinod Rai’s recent memoir has drawn a lot of attention for anecdotal accounts of his adventures in the corridors of power. His comments about former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his administration, particularly during the 2G spectrum scandal have eclipsed all else in the book, he has interesting things to say about his peers in babudom. Of special interest are his opinions about such powerful babus as Pulok Chatterji, N.K. Singh, Vini Mahajan, P.J. Thomas, T.K.A. Nair, R.P. Singh and Sunil Arora. While T.K.A. Nair is baptised “the Priest” of the PMO “temple”, other PMO inmates at the time, like Pulok Chatterji and Vini Mahajan, too wielded immense influence, says a feisty Rai. He has rare praise for Sunil Arora, the current Secretary of the newly created Department of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, calling him “an outstanding officer”, but is more than a bit bemused with former colleague R.P. Singh, who despite being “a valued colleague” took an adversarial stance on the 2G issue. Would history agree with Rai?
Gone babu, gone!
As if the shortage of IAS babus was not worry enough, it appears that several IAS officers are missing in action, some of them for several years, and the Government is clueless about their whereabouts! It may be time for the Government to perhaps reconsider the definition of “study leave”, which has become a preferred ploy of many bureaucrats to go abroad for several years, and not return! The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has recorded 19 IAS officers and two IPS officers who are on unauthorised leave for several years. They are from different State cadres (showing a democratic urge among babus across States to play truant), but the Government has been unable to trace them or take actions against them. — By Dilip Cherian

ASI begins conservation work on Diwan-i-Khas
THE Archaeological Survey of India will start conservation work from Monday on the 17th century Diwan-i-Khas monument inside the Red Fort after a portion of the roof of the Mughal-period hall ‘sagged’. Allaying apprehensions, the ASI Delhi Circle said there was nothing “alarming” and it was a “routine” conservation exercise. “The Diwan-i-Khas has been standing for over three centuries and the roof was built in a multi-layered fashion with wood layering at the bottom. And, over time, the wood has aged and must have given way or rotten, because of which the portion of the roof had sagged,” an ASI Delhi Circle official said.

EW DELHI: Justice H.L. Dattu, who has been heading the bench monitoring probe into the 2G scam, was today sworn in as the next Chief Justice of India by President Pranab Mukherjee and will have a tenure of 14 months. 63-year-old Justice Handyala Lakshminarayanaswamy Dattu, the senior-most Supreme Court judge, took oath at a brief ceremony held at the chandeliered Durbar Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhawan. He will have a tenure of 14 months and will retire on December 2, 2015. Vice President Hamid Ansari, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman P J Kurien, Union ministers Rajnath Singh, Ravi Shankar Prasad, M Venkaiah Naidu, Ananth Kumar and BJP veteran L K Advani were among those present at the ceremony. Congress leaders Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Rajeev Shulka were the only prominent opposition leaders who attended the programme. Justice Lodha, who retired yesterday as the CJI, senior judges of the Supreme Court, High Court, retired judges and members of the Bar were also present.
alalithaa, who has been convicted by Special Judge John Michael D’Cunha and sentenced to four years imprisonment in the Rs 66.65 crore disproportionate assets case. Since the sentencing was for a period more than three years, only the high court can grant bail in Jayalalithaa’s case. Kumar said a team of lawyers were holding discussions on filing a petition seeking stay of conviction and also the sentence awarded to Jayalalithaa in the 18year old case. The criminal revision petition is one of the options before the lawyers who would like to secure an immediate stay on the conviction and the sentencing. A stay on the conviction, which superior courts are said to be normally reluctant to grant in a corruption case, would nullify the disqualification as MLA which the AIADMK leader has suffered with Saturday’s judgement.
Don’t harass taxpayers: CBDT to I-T N
President Pranab Mukherjee greets the new Chief Justice of India Handyala Lakshminarayanaswamy Dattu after administering the oath of office to him at a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday. Justice Dattu has been heading the bench monitoring investigations into the 2G spectrum scam. “I will request for blessing of all citizens of this country to give me courage and con-
fidence to take this institution of mine to the highest stride,” he had said earlier this month when the file relating to his appointment reached the Prime Minister’s Office. BIG MONEY... EW DELHI: Taking a stern view of the undue “harassment” of taxpayers during scrutiny of their cases, the CBDT has issued orders asking the I-T department to complete these enquiries in quick time and not drag them “unnecessarily”. Compulsory scrutiny cases have been a matter of grievance for many taxpayers due to fears of harassment by I-T officials as one has to undertake many visits and submit numerous documents in order to prove that he or she has not escaped the tax. The I-T department, according to officials, picks up only 2 per cent of the total tax returns cases for scrutiny in an assessment year and these too are selected by a computerised system in order to totally rule out any scope for human intervention. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the apex policy making body of the Income Tax department, has now mandated that, henceforth, the ambit of these enquiries should be limited to the verification of specific questions. The board said it is issuing these directions following an analysis of taxpayers’ grievances in this regard. “Feedback and analysis of such orders indicates that, many times, the core issues which formed the basis of selection of the case for scrutiny were not examined properly. This has been causing undue harassment to the taxpayers and has also drawn criticism from several quarters. “Therefore, in such (computer-based scrutiny) cases, an Assessing Officer (AO) shall confine the questionnaire and subsequent enquiry or verification only to the specific point(s) on the basis of which the particular return has been selected for scrutiny,” the CBDT said.

Leander Paes and Marcin Matkowski pose with their trophy after winning their men's doubles final match against Jamie Murray of Britain and John Peers of Australia at the Malaysian Open tennis tournament in Kuala Lumpur.
Paes win Malaysian Open
title with Matkowski
K
UALA LUMPUR: Veteran Indian star Leander Paes, who skipped Asian Games to get some valuable ranking points, vindicated his decision by lifting the ATP Malaysian Open with new partner Marcin Matkowski. The fourth seeded IndoPolish pair rallied to beat the second seeded Briton-Australian combo of Jamie Murray and John Peers 3-6 7-6(5) 10-5 in the summit clash. It was Paes' first title of the season during which his ranking plummeted to 35 from top-10. This win will give Paes 250 ranking points and USD 25065 as prize money. The 41-year-old had ended runner-up at Washington with Australia's Sam Groth in July in the first final of the season.

"In a match like that, especially in the final, the margins between winning and losing are very small. What I really like about Marcin's game after playing with him this week is that he is a student of tennis. On the court, he's always looking to improve," Paes said after the win. "We didn't play our best tennis in the beginning today. We were playing a team that were very confident. They don't give you much rhythm. But then when we were down, we found our groove and it was pretty much a different story then," the Indian added. In the 2013 season Paes had won two titles, including the US Open with Radek Stepanek. Matkowski said, he was "happy to play with Paes.
n an IMP event the primary duty of the declarer is to ensure that he makes his contract, assuming the worst possible distribution of cards. Gopinath Manna playing for Poddar Developers in the Secunderabad tournament followed this tenet to perfection. S- A J 9 7 6 2 H- A 7 6 2 D- 3 2 C- J S- K 8 H- K Q 3 D- A Q 8 7 C- K 8 7 2
Manna was south. He dealt & opened 1 Nt. & became declarer 4 spades via a transfer sequence. West led Jack of hearts. If hearts are 3-3 there is not much problem even if trumps are 4-1, the 4 cards being with west. Dummy has only 3 losers 1 spade 1 club & I diamond (if diamond King is also with west). But life is not always so rosy.
West could be doubleton heart & may have 5 spades. Manna set out to safeguard his contract against this devilish distribution. He won the opening lead in hand & cashed the King of hearts, west following with 10. Then Manna played a small heart from hand. If west ruffs he would be ruffing a loser, so he discarded a club. Manna won with Ace & played the club jack from dummy. If east wins 7 plays a heart Manna would have ruffed with King of spades & ran the 8 of spades guarding 5 spades to Q 10 with west. Actually east played small & manna also played a small club. Poor west had to win & was comprehensively end played. He played a club but Manna discarded a small diamond from dummy & as planned earlier ran the 8 of spades making his contract, the west hand was Q 10 5 3, J 10, K 5, A 10 6 4 3 No wonder Manna’s team won the Secunderabad tournament.

REACHING 400-GOAL MARK M ADRID: Four-time World Player of the Year Lionel Messi said he could never have envisaged scoring 400 goals in his career after passing that landmark in Barcelona's 6-0 rout over Granada. The Argentine scored twice yesterday and took his tally of assists for the season to eight with two more as Neymar bagged a hat-trick to take Barca back to the top of the table. Messi's two goals took him to 359 goals for Barca allied to his 42 at international level in 525 games for club and country. "I never imagined I could achieve anything like this in my career," he said via his official Facebook page. "Thanks for all the congratulations on scoring 400 goals with FC Barcelona and the Argentinian National Team. I'll continue working hard to reach more targets." Messi is the only player to have started all seven games under new Barca boss Luis Enrique as the 44-year-old has been otherwise keen to rotate his squad. But Enrique admitted even he is enjoying watching the 27-year-old too much to hand him a break. "I don't think if we added together the goals we have scored on the playground it would reach 400," he said in his
post-match press conference. "Messi is someone who has been touched by a magic wand and he is desperate to enjoy playing football. I prefer to see him on the pitch until the last minute to press and participate in our collec-
tive play. The temptation is there, it could happen at any point in the season, but his habitat is on the field. He is very intelligent and knows how to manage his efforts and he is one of the players who presses the
most. I am confident his physical ability is up to that of being the number one." Next up for Barca is their biggest test of the season so far as they travel to face French champions Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. However, Enrique insisted he is confident that whatever team he selects they will be capable of leaving the Parc des Princes with three points. "At the moment I don't see any player who isn't capable of puting in a good performance in Paris and that for me is an advantage. We are moving forward with everyone, the team is showing reliability in important aspects of the team independent of who plays." The root of that confidence comes from not only Barca's supreme attacking resources in Messi and Neymar, but also a stellar defensive record as they have yet to concede a goal in seven games this season. "To be able to attack well you need a good attack, to be well organised and, when the opposition have the ball, the first objective is that the don't progress," added Enrique. "It is very important for us to be efficient with and without the ball. To be efficient in all phases. The players are showing their commitment to being strong defensively."
N Korea athletes miss ailing Kim ‘day and night’
S
EOUL: North Korean athletes at the Asian Games miss ailing supreme leader Kim Jong-Un so much that they held a special meeting to sing their loyalty, state media. One gold medal weightlifter read a poem he had written for the young supremo at the "Night In Longing For Dear Leader Kim Jong-Un" on Saturday, reports said. The meeting was held after the North's media said Kim was suffering "discomfort" in a rare admission of his health
problems. A total of 273 North Korean athletes, coaches and officials are at the Asiad at Incheon in rival South Korea. The delegation is rigidly controlled by North Korean minders and guarded by hundreds of South Korean security service agents. Kim Yong-Hun, the North's sports minister, told the meeting all delegates were missing the young leader "day and night," state-run Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) said. Participants sang songs
such as "Can't live without him" or "Burning Wish," before Kim Un-Guk, a weightlifting gold medalist, recited his poem "In Missing the Comrade Kim Jong-Un." Kim earlier credited the leader for helping cure his injury and shatter three world records to win gold in the 62kg class. "Kim Byong-Sik, head of the delegation, vowed ... To win more gold medals in a sign of loyalty for the leader," KCNA said. The North has so far won 25 medals including eight gold medals -- half from weightlifting. The Kim dynasty has ruled the isolated, Stalinist country for more than six decades with an iron fist and pervasive personality cult. Kim Jong-Un, who took over as ruler from his late father Kim Jong-Il in 2011, is known to be a sports fanatic, showering its star athletes with lavish cars and apartments. He had not been seen in public since early September, sparking media speculation over his health. But state TV on Friday showed a limping Kim visiting a factory, lauding him for making the trip "despite suffering discomfort."

Yogeshwar ends 28-year gold drought in wrestling
JINX BROKEN I
NCHEON: London Olympic bronze medallist Yogeshwar Dutt ended a 28-year gold drought for India in wrestling as he accounted for the country's fourth yellow metal in the 17th Asian Games after beating Zalimkhan Yusupov of Tajikistan in men's 65kg freestyle. This is India's first Asian Games wrestling gold after 1986 when Kartar Singh won it in Seoul. However, both Satywart Kadian and Babita Kumari lost out on third-place finishes as they went down in men's 97kg freestyle and women's 55kg
freestyle. Yogeshwar was the star performer of the day as he bettered his 2006 edition bronze in style with a couple of splendid bouts. The Indian, who was trailing all through in his semifinal bout before coming good in the last few seconds to enter the final, picked up the yellow metal in style. He though had to toil hard in a gruelling final with his rival Yusupov defending extremely well. Yogeshwar tried to pin his opponent down time and again but failed in his efforts. Yogeshwar won his first point at the end of the opening period. In the second period, he managed to earn two more points to get a 3-0 verdict in his favour. Earlier, Yogeshwar, having beaten Jinhyok Kang of North Korea 3-1, a decision by points, in his quarterfinal bout, clashed with Yeerlanbieke Katai in the last four stage. A dominant Chinese was leading throughout the game before the Indian turned the bout in last few seconds.

[ABOVE] Yogeshwar Dutt holds the tricolour after defeating Tajikistan's Zalimkhan Yusupov, winning gold medal in the men's 65 kg freestyle wrestling match at Dowon Gymnasium Stadium.
Yogeshwar was trailing 7-9 before he managed to pin down his opponent in the dying minutes of the match to win 5-0 in a 'victory by fall' verdict. Meanwhile, Satywart was beaten comprehensively by Mamed Ibragimov of Kazakhstan 0-3 in the bronze-medal match. Satywart, who lost his quarterfinal bout to Magomed Musaev of Kyrgyzstan 1-3 in a 'decision by points' verdict, could make it to the repechage round as his opponent reached the final. In his repechage, Satywart proved too strong for Pakistan's Bilal Hussain Awan, who he defeated on great technical superiority 12-0 to make it to the bronze medal play-off. On her way to the semifinals, Babita first defeated Cambodia's Srey Mao Dorn 5-0 in a victory by fall verdict in the Round of 16 and then got the better of Aiym Abdildina of Kazakhstan 3-1 'decision by point' verdict to make it to the semifinals. In the last four stage, Babita had an uphill task as she faced the 15-time World Champion Saori Yoshida of Japan. As expected, the Japanese, who is three-time Olympic gold medallist, proved too strong for the Indian. Although Babita tried her best but Yoshida beat 4-0, winning on great superiority (a difference of 10 points) 144. But in the bronze-medal round, Xuechun Zhong of China downed Babita 3-1. However, Jyoti was thrashed by Mongolia's Ochirbatyn Burmaa in a 0-4 'Great Superiority' verdict in the quarterfinals of the Freestyle 75kg to crash out of the event.
India bags four medals on a fruitful day in athletics By SS Ramaswamy
I
NCHEON: Indian track and field athletes put behind the disappointment of denying an additional medal in women's 3000m steeplechase event as they picked up one silver and three bronze on the second day of athletics competitions at the Asian Games. Woman race walker Khushbir Kaur clinched the silver medal in the 20km walk before 400m runners Rajiv Arokia and M R Poovamma grabbed a bronze each in men's and women's 400m race while Manju Bala secured a bronze in women's hammer throw to add to the growing medal tally from track and field events. On Saturday, Lalita Babar had won a bronze in the controversy-ridden women's 3000m steeplechase event to open the medal count for the country. The jury's decision to reinstate Bahrain's Ruth Jebet as the gold medal winner after
she had been stripped of the women's 3000m steeplechase title for an infringement of the running rules did not go down well with the Indian camp. However, cheers were brought to the contingent when 20km race walker Khushbir timed her race to perfection to clinch the women's bronze medal in the gruelling event after being in third place consistently till between the 16 and 18km marks. Khushbir clocked 1 hour and 33.07 seconds to take the second spot behind China's Lu Xiuzhi (1:21.52), who led from the start, and ahead of Jeon Yeonguen (1:33.18) who was overtaken by the Indian walker. Khushbir, who scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a medal in race walk in the Asian Games, was cautioned twice during the race but kept on walking in a determined fashion. tention on the back straight before settling for the bronze in 52.36, well below her personal best of 51.73 done in Lucknow during the National Inter-State Meet in June.
The gold was won by yet another of Bahrain's African import O M Adekaya in a fast 51.59 while Vietnam's Quach Thi Lan picked up the silver in 52.06, her personal best.

HIGH Myneni in line for two gold medals; Sania, Prarthana get bronze
I
NCHEON: Saketh Myneni got himself in line for two gold medals by reaching the finals of both men's doubles and mixed doubles events even as other Indian tennis players, including Sania Mirza, clinched three bronze at the Asian Games. Saketh and Sanam Singh overcame experienced Thai twins Sanchai and Sonchat Ratiwatana 4-6 6-3 10-6 in the men's doubles semifinals, which lasted 67 minutes. Later in the day, the big-serving Myneni combined with seasoned doubles exponent Sania to reach the mixed doubles summit clash with a convincing 6-1 6-3 win over Chinese pair of Zie Zheng and Ze Zhang. The result meant that 28-year-old will have a chance to win two gold medals in his maiden Asian Games appearance. Chandigarh lad Sanam now has the opportunity to win his second consecutive Games gold, having won the yellow metal with Somdev Devvarman at the 2010 edition. Earlier, Sania and Prarthana Thombare settled for a bronze, losing the women's doubles semifinal 6-7 (1) 6-2 10-4 to Chinese Taipei's Chin Wei Chan and Su Wei Hsieh. The fifth seeded Indian combo put
up a brave fight before going down in an hour and 35 minutes. It was seventh Asian Games medal for Sania and first for Prarthana. Yuki Bhambri clinched India's lone singles' medal in this edition, after settling for a bronze in the men's event following a 6-3 2-6 1-6 loss to Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka in the semifinal. Yuki won another bronze medal for India when he and Divij Sharan, seeded fourth, lost 7-6 (6) 67 (6) 9-11 to Korean pair of Lim Yongkyu and Chung Hyeonas. Their defeat prevented an all-Indian final and now it will be the eighth seeded Koreans who will challenge Sanam and Myneni for the gold. Nevertheless, in the absence of star players, Indian youngsters have so far put up a commendable show. Somdev, Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna pulled out of the quadrennial event to take care of their rankings on the professional circuit. Sania decided to play here, after initially deciding to play on the WTA circuit. First to take field today was Yuki for the men's singles semifinal. The 22 yearold Delhi youngster started brilliantly and took a little over half hour to pocket the opening set but the match turned on its head in the very next set.
Women lose recurve bronze play-off to Japan
By SS Ramaswamy
I
NCHEON: The Indian recurve archers wrapped up a throughly disappointing performance at the 17th Asian Games after the women's team lost a tense bronze medal match to Japan in a shoot-off. Japan started off the block in style by clinching the opening set of six arrows shot by each team 54-53 to take a 2-0 lead before India took the next two by 58-55 and 51-50 to lead 4-2 only for the former to fight back and force a tie at 4-4 by clinching the last set 58-55. This resulted in the the shoot-off in which each player shot one arrow at the target. In the shoot-off, the Japanese trio fired two 10s and a seven to log 27 points. However, the first two Indians -- L Bombayla Devi and Laxmirani Majhi -- could shoot only an eight each. Though star archer Deepika Kumari fired a perfect 10, it was not enough as her team's tally could

The compound archers won two more medals in the individual category with Abhishek Verma winning the silver in men's and Trisha Deb grabbing the bronze in the women's event to upstage their better known recurve bow compatriots. On Sunday, too, the recurve women's team should have got past the Japanese trio after taking a handy 4-2 lead after three sets as Indian archer Deepika Kumari being consoled by her coach at the 17th winning each set gave the team 2 Asian Games in Incheon on Sunday after the women's team missed out on points. bronze medal in the recurve archery event. SHORT CUT Indian handball teams lose
The Indian handball teams continued with their listless show as both the men's and women's units lost their respective classification matches. The Indian men finished 14th after going down 25-32 to United Arab Emirates in the 13th14th Place Classification match at the Seonhak Handball Gymnasium here. The women's team lost 26-44 against Uzbekistan in 5th-8th place Classification tie. They will next play the women's classification 7th-8th place on September 30.

India's Yashaan Zubin Khambatta, riding a horse named Olgy, qualified for the Equestrian Jumping Individual Final Round. In an event that tests the ability of horse and rider to jump fences without knocking them down, Khambatta committed a total of 29 penalties to manage a 35th place finish at the Dream Park here. The 25-year-old Indian added eight and one penalty in jump and time respectively to finish 32nd in the Jumping Individual first qualifier.
Indian spikers go down fighting against South Korea
The Indian men's volleyball team put up a spirited fight against the muchfancied South Korea before losing 22-25 25-27 18-25 in a closely contested group E play-off match. While India may have lost the encounter in three straight sets, they gave a tough fight to the host nation in each of the three with the first two going down to the wire. What cost India the match was offform of 6ft 9 inch spiker GR Vaishnav, who could garner only four points for his team. While veteran Punjab player Gurinder Singh was impressive at the net with 13 points, Naveen Raja Jacob also got 10 points with his deceptive drops.

LIN SHATTERS LEE’S GOLDEN DREAMS I
NCHEON: China's Olympic champion Lin Dan shattered world number one Lee Chong Wei's dreams of Asian Games gold with a 22-20, 1221, 21-9 victory in the semifinals. The Malaysian's final Asian Games ended in heartbreak as he pulled back from a game down against his long-time nemesis but faded in the decider. Defending champion Lin will face world title-holder Chen Long in the final after his Chinese stablemate easily beat Hong Kong's Wei Nan 21-6 21-10 in the other semi. But Lee, 31, was left to ponder the ruins of what was undoubtedly one of his last chances to outclass Lin on one of the sport's big stages. "He looked really confident in the third set and I could not follow him any more," said Lee, who has announced this Asian
India men and women beat Bangladesh in Kabaddi
NCHEON: India made a resounding start in kabaddi competition of the 17th Asian Games with both the men's and women's teams thrashing Bangladesh in their opening preliminary round matches at the Songdo Global University Gymnasium. Indian women's team was the first to get across their Bangladeshi counterparts as they trounced their neighbours 29-18 in a Pool A match. The men's team then brushed aside the Bangladeshi men 30-15 to start their campaign on a positive note in Pool A, which also consists of Thailand and Pakistan. In the men's team, India dished out a dominating show as they pocketed a huge 10-point lead after finishing the first half 16-6 ahead. Though the Bangladeshi put up a slightly better show after the break but still India managed to end the second half with a 14-9 advantage. The women's match, on the other hand, rode on their brilliant first half were they zoomed to 22-5 at the interval. The Bangladeshi eves did turn the tables in the second half with a 13-7 scoreline but it was not enough to erase the first half deficit.

Now I'll go call on one of his returns in back (home) and have a rest the first game, which was before the next tourna- called in by the line judge, ment." but ruled out by the umpire.
"There was a misjudgment in the first game and that made me a little bit anxious, but I adjusted well," said Lin, who said he relished any chance to line up against Lee. "I treasured this opportunity to play with Lee because it's a year since we last met -- I had some difficulties in the match, but I managed to change my attitude and mood." The first game already had the hallmarks of a classic as both players punched back fast returns and forced each other to dive for long shots. Lee started stronger, going into the break 11-5 up, but Lin quickly battled back with smashes and deft net shots, suddenly turning on the power for 13-13. Lee pulled ahead again with a three-point lead only to be brought back to 20-20 and lose the game 22-20 as Lin unleashed cross-court drives which left the Malaysian sprawling.
The second saw Lee again take the lead 11-7 and this time he managed to fend off an attempted Lin comeback with delicately angled net play and a determination to get back every shot, lunging to whatever Lin threw at him to take the game 21-12. But the Chinese superstar turned the tables in the third, romping to an 8-2 lead which Lee could not close. Both players used everything in their armoury with powerful Lin firing pistol shots that bounced of Lee's racquet. Despite some flashes of brilliance from a scampering Lee, who flicked one lightning-fast backhand return from the net which Lin hardly saw, it was not enough and he lost the third by a yawning 12 points. It was the latest in a string of high-profile Lin victories in badminton's best rivalry, including in the 2010 Asian Games final in Guangzhou.
Mary leads eves into medal round
I
NCHEON:Olympic bronze-medallist M C Mary Kom led the charge as Indian women boxers packed a powerful punch by assuring themselves of medals in each of the three weight categories at the 17th Asian Games. Mary Kom (51kg), L Sarita Devi (60kg) and Pooja Rani (75kg) entered the semifinals of their respective weight categories with commanding victories. Mary Kom kicked off the proceedings in the ring for India for a second successive day and once again gave a perfect start, against Si Haijuan of China. Facing an opponent 10 years her junior, the five-time world champion Indian drew from her huge reservoir of
experience to outwit the rather sprightly Chinese. Sluggish to begin with, the Manipuri found her rhythm as the bout progressed, displaying precision in her punches, especially jabs. Particularly impressive in the second round, Mary seemed on course for a comfortable win but was taken by surprise in the third round, in which Haijuan tactfully blunted the Indian's attack. However, mere glimpses of promise were never going to be enough against the multiple-time Asian champion, whose well-timed combination punches hardly found any response from the Chinese in the fourth and final round. Sarita, on the other hand, endured an energy-sapping slug fest against Mongolia's Suvd Erdene Oyungerel but was a clear winner. The Indian, a former World and Asian champion, managed to come out triumphant as her blows landed clearly. She was also quite tactful in defence, fighting her opponent from a long range to ensure that even well-timed punches from Oyungerel lacked in impact. Sarita will now face Korean Jina Park in the last-four stage.

"The competition here is extremely tough with the likes of Korea, China, Uzbekistan and Iran. Our boys have performed wonderfully well," he said. Complementing SAI for
helping the federation in conducting their camp from April onwards till their departure for the Games at Bhopal, Khushwaha said that with better equipment like boats and starting blocks and import of foreign coaches, things could be better. "We have a foreign coach from Germany in the four slalom events that will be held on October 1 and 2, but not in others," he said. "There are 48 medals on offer in this sporting discipline but generally there is more attention on games which offer just a few like hockey," he pointed out.
