Right to Information (RTI) plea reveals that Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has wasted money in installing waste bins across Mumbai. The application, filed by an RTI activist Mansoor Umer Darvesh, reveals that BMC has purchased a rectangular pole mounted S.S litter bin for Rs. 22,290 (including labour charges) whereas ADC confirmed that its actual market value is only Rs. 6,500. Has the differences in the price ie Rs.15,790 been spent only in its installation? Further the RTI questioned the amount of rupees spent by BMC on each bins to fix it on footpath (labour charged), in reply the Executive Engineer (SWM) Zone VI Public Information Officer has

Relief material being marked to be transported to Nepal.

fter a 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal causing widespread destruction, followed by aftershocks, the situation continues to be grim as people are battling to survive in adverse conditions. They are still apprehensive to enter their houses and are facing shortage of food, water and medical supplies. Many NGOs and organisations in Mumbai have come forward to extend a helping hand to the affected people. The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) is carrying out extensive relief efforts to help people in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur. At present 350 devotees are in Nepal, providing food and other relief material. ISKCON Kolkata collected milk powder for children, dal, rice, blankets and tents while clothes were collected by ISKCON Delhi. Over six trunks of surgical equipments and medicines were carried by 13 doctors and medical assistants from Bhaktivedanta Hospital, Mumbai to set up a mini operation theatre. “The moment we heard about the disaster which struck Nepal, we started offering prayers at our temples. We began arranging for relief material and sent our volunteers and doctors four days ago. Thirteen doctors and assistants aren't

enough at present, however we are trying to send more teams and volunteers. There are 350 volunteers in Nepal now serving fresh nutritious meals to 5,000 people in Kathmandu and 7,000 in Bhaktapur every day. Our target is to feed 24,000 people in two days”, said Lucky Kulkarni, spokesperson of ISKCON. Apart from food camps and operation theatres, ISKCON has also begun prayer services in Nepal. Radhanath Swamiji, ISKCON spiritual leader expressed his gratitude to the Government of India, Aviation Minister and Air India for extending their support in helping ISKCON carry 2.5 ton of relief material from Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata. Air India delivered ISKCON's relief material for the Kathmandu earthquake victims free of cost. “The Government of India and Aviation Department were extremely helpful and did all the paperwork for us for transportation and carried our goods to Kathmandu without any cost while we kept arranging for the relief items to be carried”, said Radha Raman Prabhuji, General Manager of ISKCON temple, Kolkata. Those who are interested in contributing relief material can do so by contacting the respective ISKCON office in their cities and will be guided accordingly. However, for those in Mumbai, it is preferable to give monetary donations so that funds could be used to purchase relief material in Delhi or Kolkata. This will make transportation to Kathmandu easier . Mumbai based NGOs – Bharatiya Gorkha Ekta Sangh (BGES) and Sunakhari Nepali Mahila Samaj – have also teamed up to extend support to the earthquake victims. Poonam Lama, Secretary of BGES spoke to ADC and underscored the relief efforts being taken up by the two NGOs. Two trailers filled with food stuff, biscuit packets, medicines worth rupees 15 lakh and sanitary napkins will reach Nepal this afternoon. The trailers were provided by Siddhivinayak Logistics Ltd, who are providing at least 15 trailers filled with relief material from different states. The relief material will be received by a relative of Poonam in Nepal and then distributed across villages where much help hasn't been received. The Nepal Army will also be assisting in the distribution of relief material.

ver six thousand personnel in the Mumbai police force are suffering from acidity problems which is the prime cause for deaths due to heart attack, weakness and lack of concentration. This shocking information was revealed by a private medical examination team which visits various police stations in Mumbai and adjoining Thane district to conduct complete health analysis of the police force. Talking to ADC, Vikas Tripathi, a member of the medical examination squad said, “'Till now, in Mumbai we have conducted medical examinations in over 50 police stations and it was found that every police officer is suffering from acidity problems which leads to other illnesses like brain damage, diabetes, heart attack, problems in joints, etc.” “In the past, we have seen many cases in which young police officers have died due to heart attack and the main reason for this kind of sudden death is acidity. ROAD OVER RAIL NETWORK: An easy option over road transport in the Konkan region where trucks laden on flat-bed railway wagons usually carry fuel and other inflammable items.
The Ro-Ro network... EVEN as our country boasts of the biggest network of railways and upcoming infrastructure with Monorial, Metro and Seaways, it is a fact that a large number of cities and villages lack road connectivity in this era. Scenes like this wherein one transport network comes to the rescue of another transport network with the roll-on, roll-off (roro) services with scores of tracks aboard flat-bed rail wagons which let the trains haul them over a long distance, are often seen in the Konkan and other long distance railway routes in the country. This picture shot by our photo-editor Vishwanath Salian at Mangalore, depicts the lack of highway, forcing trucks been boarded atop trains to reach their nearest highway. The trucks – looking to avoid the difficult terrain, and congested roads - move a variety of cargo between Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra (Mumbai, Navi Mumbai) to Mangalore, South Karnataka and Kerala. This is the only time when the motorman of the train takes charge of transporting these trucks, while the driver of these trucks being on rest until they reach a highway. The trucks usually carry
fuel and other inflammable items. Konkan Railway operates the rail link between Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka – connecting Mumbai and Mangalore on a point-topoint basis.
A Miracle: Trapped for 82 hours, Nepal quake survivor drank urine
A man pulled from the rubble of a collapsed hotel by a French rescue team more than three days after the deadly Nepal earthquake says he was forced to drink his own urine to survive. Rishi Khanal, 27, had just finished lunch at a hotel in Kathmandu and had gone up to the second floor when everything suddenly started to move and fall apart. He was struck by falling masonry and trapped with his foot crushed under rubble. "I had some hope but by yesterday I'd given up. My nails went all white and my lips cracked ... I was sure no one was coming for me. I was certain I was going to die," he told The Associated Press from his hospital bed yesterday, surrounded by his family. He was surrounded by dead people and a terrible smell. But he kept banging on the rubble all around him and eventually this brought a
French rescue team that extracted him after an operation lasting many hours. By the time he was pulled out, he had been trapped in what could have become his tomb for 82 hours. "There was no sound going out, or coming in. I kept
banging against the rubble and finally someone responded and came to help. I hadn't eaten or had anything to drink so I drank my own urine." It was not clear if he was a hotel employee or a guest. "It feels good. I am thankful," he said. He was taken away for
surgery before more details could be obtained. More than 4,700 people are known to have died and over 8,000 injured in the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that also caused deaths in India and Tibet. But an overwhelming majority were in Nepal.
Polygamy increases risk of heart disease in men
POLYGAMY can increase the risk of heart disease by more than four-fold in men, a new study conducted in Saudi Arabia and UAE has found. The prospective multicentre observational study examined the relationship between the presence and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) and number of wives. "Men who practice polygamy have up to four concurrent wives who can reside in the same or different regions but do not normally reside in the same house," said Dr Amin Daoulah, a cardiologist at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The study included patients referred for coronary angiography at 5 hospitals in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. CAD was defined as
more than 70 per cent narrowing in a major epicardial blood vessel or more than 50 per cent in the left main artery (called left main disease, LMD). Multivessel disease (MVD) was defined as more than one diseased vessel. The 687 married men in the study had an average age of 59 years and 56 per cent had diabetes, 57 per cent had hypertension and 45 per cent had a past history of CAD. Around two-thirds of the men had one wife (68 per cent) while 19 per cent had 2 wives, 10 per cent had 3 wives and 3 per cent had 4 wives. Men with more than one wife were more likely to be older, live in a rural area, have a higher income and have a history of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). "Polygamy may be more frequent in rural areas because it is more
culturally acceptable and getting married at a young age is more common," said Daoulah. "Also, in the regions that we studied, there was a higher percentage of national citizens residing in rural areas compared to urban areas. "Men with multiple wives have to be well supported financially, and although Saudis and Emirati people are supported by their governments, polygamists may need more than one income. They may therefore take on extra employment or have the added pressure of travelling daily to urban areas for higher paid work," said Daoulah. The researchers found a significant association between number of wives and the presence of CAD, LMD and MVD. Risk increased with the number of wives. After adjusting for
baseline differences, the researchers showed that men who practiced polygamy had a 4.6-fold increased risk of CAD, a 3.5-fold increased risk of LMD and a 2.6-fold elevated risk of MVD. "We found an association between an increasing number of wives and the severity and number of coronary blockages. This could be because the need to provide and maintain separate households multiplies the financial burden and emotional expense," Daoulah said. "Each household must be treated fairly and equally, and it seems likely that the stress of doing that for several spouses and possibly several families of children is considerable," Daoulah said. The study was presented at the Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology Congress 2015 in Abu Dhabi.

NCP will not support land bill, says Pawar
By A Special Correspondent
P
utting a stop to speculation about the NCP's stance over the sensitive land ordinance, the NCP President, Sharad Pawar yesterday made it clear that his party will not support the land ordinance in its present form as it does not favour removal of several crucial clauses. The party has decided to vote against the ordinance in the Rajya Sabha. Speaking at a press conference, Pawar said, “I have spoken to a number of political
NCP president Sharad Pawar during a meeting at Yashwantrao Chavan Auditorium at Nariman Point, on Wednesday. parties who are opposed to the ordinance. The government may bulldoze it in the Lok Sabha based on its majority in the lower house. But the picture will be different in the Rajya Sabha. The NCP will vote against the ordinance in the Upper House”. “The government has appointed Surface Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari as the negotiator to hold dialogue with the opposition to support the ordinance's passage in the Parliament. I know Gadkari, he is a polite man and always open for dialogue. But the language of the letter he has written to all opposition members asking whether they don't want development and water to farmers as well as defence projects clearly shows the arrogance of power. It is not the language of dialogue,” he added further. “Gadkari's letter is based on the brief he has got from his political bosses. The Land Acquisition Bill passed in 2013 was drafted by a committee headed by me. All suggestions by the then leaders of opposition Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley were incorporated and the Bill was passed unanimously. Then why this government took the decision to scrap the Act and bring amendments,” he questioned.
Sena-Rane ‘war’ to heat up this summer?
MARCH TIME, MARCH.... The Mumbai Police Constables hold a parade rehearsal at the Shivaji Park for Friday's Maharashtra Day celebrations.
Nitesh Rane accuses Sena’s ‘Shiv Vada Pav’ of being an illegal venture By A Staff Reporter
I
n a fiery disclosure of sorts, Nitesh Rane went after the Shiv Sena’s Shiv Vada Pav venture with hammer and tongs. Addressing the press on Wednesday, he made the startling claims backed by RTI, that the Shiv Vada Pav stalls strewn across the city do not have any legal authorisations. Further to that, the BMC has avoided giving any written sanctions to run the businesses to these stalls. The younger Rane went on to add that 90 per cent of these stalls are run by non-Marathis. “The Sena claiming that their Shiv Vada Pav venture, meant for empowering the Marathi manoos is nothing
but an eyewash”, claimed Nitesh. “I ask today, how much has this venture actually helped or contributed in empowering our jobless Marathi youth? In fact the venture has become an epitome of corrupt practices” said the visibly aggressive MLA of Sindhudurg. The Shiv Vada Pav, under the Sena ruled BMC, was an endeavour started in 2009 for empowering the jobless Marathi youth. “What became of it, was exposed today through certain sting operations that our Swabhiman Sanghatana conducted across the wards. The stalls are owned by the Sena’s ward pramukhs and then given on rent at a whopping fee of Rs. 20,000 per month. Mostly these stalls are run by the non-Marathis, therefore not serving the very purpose for which the entire project was started. Further to that, it was revealed by the sting opera-
tion that, none of these stalls were actually authorised to conduct businesses. These stalls are randomly subjected
to fines ranging from Rs.20,000 – Rs.25,000 by the BMC. If these stalls were actually meant for what it is

supposed to do then how come they do not enjoy security and authorisation to conduct businesses,” asked Rane. He further added, “The Shiv Vada Pav stalls were also meant for promoting the indigenous culinary of Marathi culture which, Vada Pav being the foremost in the list, but the stalls are being run by the non-Marathis who are serving Chinese dishes,” claimed the Congress leader. “We need answers to these queries from the BJP-Sena alliance within the next 7 days”, he further added. In case no satisfactory answers are received, the younger Rane scion announced that he will start the “Swabhiman Vada Pav” project which promises to remain authentic in its dealings and live up to the commitments of empowering the Marathi youths and women.

CP suggests identification, blacklisting, isolation followed by counselling
By Santia Dudi
C
ommissioner of Police Rakesh Maria on Wednesday spoke about the identification and blacklisting of cops who are considered corrupt, womanisers, alcoholics, drug addicts and other activities which hamper the image of Mumbai Police. He said, “I have asked the departments to prepare a list of such officers. Identifying such officers is more important because the steps to improve the situation can be taken after that only. We will first isolate such officers and they will be barred from direct public interaction. Afterwards, such officers will be counselled, it will be a step to help out the cops to overcome their weakness and negative aspects of their personality. “Also we have started special training programmes for
station house officers. The first batch is out and the other batch is starting from May 4. In this training, the cops will be trained on aspects like how to deal with complainants, how to handle women and senior citizens' complaints. They are asked to register a 'zero FIR' instead of figuring out under which police station the FIR should be registered. We are taking two officers from every police station in each module. We
are taking the services of professionals, senior officers and retired police officers. It's a two-day program and was started two days ago. “The focus of the module will be on behaviour, body language and how to interact with the public. We have also involved experts from the private sector. Blacklisting is a step taken for the betterment of Mumbai Police. So that the public has confidence in the us.”

f you have been affected because of a road accident or know of someone who has, you would know how it impacts people’s lives, and the importance of following road safety to ensure such mishaps does not take place. Road accidents are among the biggest killers in India. Data suggests that India has among the highest incidences of road accidents, with one accident every minute and one death every four minutes. In 2013 alone, there were close to 5,00,000 road accidents in India in which more than 1,30,000 people lost their lives. A large percentage of these accidents involved two-wheelers, and in more than 50 per cent of cases, the victims were bread earners for their family. With a view to bringing about greater awareness among people to take necessary precautions and avoid road accidents, superstar Amitabh Bachchan will lead a campaign on road safety initiated by the Association of American Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) and Abbott. As part of this campaign, doctors in clinics and hospitals across India will be provided with a poster, containing important messages on road safety endorsed by Amitabh Bachchan. “I pledge my support for this campaign and commit myself towards the achievement of AAPI’s worthy goals.
I am with you in this campaign to create awareness about head injury and trauma because of road accidents,” said Amitabh Bachchan. “AAPI is committed to building the right foundation to address the serious concerns of head injury and trauma. We are grateful to superstar Amitabh Bachchan for leading the campaign towards creating awareness, preventing accidents and saving lives,” said Dr Ravi Jahagirdar, President of AAPI. Also, today, the day after World Safety Day, Abbott along with AAPI are undertaking a nationwide road safety awareness drive potentially reaching more than 8,00,000 people. Abbott’s field force, in partnership with doctors in clinics and hospitals across the country, will dedicate the day to sensitize people on safety principles, promote safe driving tips and encourage them to take a pledge for safe driving by following easy and actionable points. Over-speeding, inadequate protection (not wear-
ing helmets and seat-belts), distracted driving (use of mobile phones, etc.) and not being alert are some of the key reasons recorded for road accidents. This road safety awareness drive encourages people to be more responsible while driving and follow road safety regulations. It calls for people to follow simple steps like wearing a helmet or seatbelt, avoiding phone calls while driving, avoiding overspeeding and being alert while driving which could reduce road accidents. "With our vision of 'Zero Injury Zero Incidents', our field force is trained on safe two-wheeler driving. This has resulted in reduction in accidents to the tune of 83 per cent amongst Abbott employees," said Bhasker Iyer, Abbott's management representative in India. "An injury or fatality on account of road accidents can be avoided if people are aware and take necessary precautions. This awareness program, in partnership with doctors, will save lives." "AAPI has been working with multiple stakeholders and professional associations like NSI, NSSI and AASAN in developing the first Trauma and brain injury guidelines for India. We will be partnering with companies like Abbott and Medtronic to take these guidelines to doctors across the country," said Anwar Feroz Siddiqi, honorary adviser to AAPI. Vishwanath Salian | ADC

We also have to look at what type of mode is safe, financially viable and efficient. Worldwide metros are operated and maintained privately and by the government. says: “Mumbai has been an important reason for whatever I have achieved. That is why my latest series of paint-
ings is on a theme inspired by the city.” Kiran Chopra has been in Mumbai – after marriage – for four decades. She has completed MA in painting and drawing in Mumbai. Kiran: Every artist dips his brush in his own soul and paints his own nature into his work. She has specialised in abstract, figurative, landscape painting. She has chosen for the mystery, magic and magnificence of black and she feels it is difficult to give dimensions without colours and she simply loves to achieve that through commanding quotation of black and white. Among others, she has won the All India Fine and Arts crafts for best painting. The exhibition will go on at the Jehangir Art Gallery till next Monday.
costs. Interestingly, the Delhi Metro is supplemented by Gurgaon’s Rapid Metro Rail of which operations and maintenance are completely outsourced and is very successful in its support system. The one-day workshop also presented case studies of Metro Rail Corporations from Bangalore, Chennai and Navi Mumbai. While the Bangalore Metro Rail already follows the DMRC model as far as operations and maintenance are concerned and
haven’t outsourced crucial activities, the Chennai Metro Rail Corporation has recently deviated from outsourcing and is operating in-house. In-house operations and maintenance are cost saving and remain under control was the general consensus. The rake manufacturers Hitachi and Bombardier also participated in the day long workshop and showcased their practices, processes and systems. They expressed the importance of life cycle costs of rolling stock and how a long term maintenance contract can help obsolescence management.

Rahul’s new common man avatar? R
AHUL GANDHI cuts a sorry figure as he goes to Punjab with a second class train ticket. He is said to be on a countrywide mission to help farmers. How the farmers are going to be helped if he meets them is not known. Is he offering the farmers what they want? Can he solve the farmers problems? Thanks to lack of rain and crop failure, the farmers are in distress. What can Rahul do about this? He could have done something when his party ruled India for as many as ten years. His party did not think of doing anything for farmers. The government must have considered, for instance, how water can be had for cultivation in the absence of rain. The water of most rivers now flows finally in to the sea. Rahul's political party did nothing for the farmer while it was in office for ten years. The farmer did not exist for the party leaders. Today, the farmers are in distress – mostly because of crop failure or their inability to pay back loans. Rahul should talk about this issue. Instead, he is waging a political battle against the BJP by taking up the cause of farmers. He is fighting the land bill which the government wants to pass in Parliament. The farmers's primary worry is crop failure: it is a question of life and death for him. If Rahul Gandhi had not taken up the land bill, he would not have anything else to fight for.

VEN as the nation is shocked with the worst-ever earthquake in the Himalayan nation, Nepal and at least 12 northern states of India, political circles in India, particularly the western parts of the nation are taken aback by the sudden upraise of the newest political outfit of the Muslim community, Majlis-e-Ittihad al-Muslimin (MIM). Not that this is the first organization of the minority community that has entered the political arena and has achieved noticeable success in a short span of time. There have been splinter groups and organizations of Muslims, Christians and other minority communities, which emerged as forces to reckon with and held political space. But they turned out to be like mushrooms and disappeared or merged with other bigger forces in no time. However, MIM seems to be a different force, which has posed a severe threat and challenge to all leaders of minorities. Apart from in Andhra Pradesh and newly-formed Telangana, MIM has already made deep inroads at least in semi-urban Muslim dominated areas of Maharashtra, if recent by-elections for Assembly in Bandra (East), in Mumbai, and civic body elections in Aurangabad, in Marathwada, is any indication. The Hyderabad party, floated and led by firebrand Owaisi brothers, Asaduddin and Akabaruddin, has touched the chord of Muslim minds. Akabaruddin Owaisi, who is known for shooting his mouth off and getting headlines, was elected to Telangana Assembly with a huge margin, while his elder brother Asaduddin, comparatively sober and learned politician is now a two-term member of Parliament from Hyderabad. Both brothers, who work in tandem, continue to have their sway not only over the party fold but the Muslim community, particularly the young and half-literate generations of the minority.
A surprise entry in Nanded The MIM made its surprise entry in to Maharashtra two years ago, when it won a good number of seats in the Nanded Municipal body elections. This was despite the fact that Nanded is the home-town of two former Congress Chief Ministers, Shankarrao and Ashok Chavan. The party continued its march in the 2014 State Assembly elections too. It won two seats, one in Aurangabad, a divisional headquarters of Marathwada region and the other from Mumbai South. The party posed a serious threat and stood second in at least three other Assembly constituencies, thus heralding its plans to emerge as a serious player in Maharashtra. In Bandra-East Assembly by-election, MIM

could not do as well as it was expected to, perhaps because of a weak candidate and the sympathy wave for the deceased local MLA, Bala Sawant. However, it turned the tide in Aurangabad Municipal elections, where it emerged as the chief Opposition party with as many as 27 councillors with it. This success has caused raising of many eye-brows of those, who were so far considering the MIM as a lightweight outfit and good only to split votes. The growing acceptance that the MIM is receiving from the Muslim community is actually a failure of those parties which were so far claiming to be champions of the minority cause. The Samajwadi Party that wins a couple of seats in Maharashtra, particularly in Muslim mohallas, has been failing and failing miserably in the last few years, mainly because the Uttar Pradesh party and its leaders from Mulayam Singh at the national level to Abu Azmi at the local level, failed to woo the
THINKING ALOUD Bharatkumar Raut young generation Muslims. The minorities, particularly in urban and semi-urban parts of the state, continue to feel being isolated from the main stream and also feel that they were deprived of fair treatment in education and in public sector jobs. Neither the Samajwadi Party, nor the earlier strong force of Muslim League could address these issues. That caused worsening of the socio-cultural structure of Muslims. Muslims in search of their own identity and pride of place were looking for a leadership that would give them the feeling of being looked after. Owaisi brothers seemed to have filled in the gap. This feeling of being protected has been playing the magic and the Muslims started following the MIM. Minorities in any society need a rallying point and once they get it, the leadership becomes stronger in no time. Owaisi brothers played this trick successfully and it yielded fruit.
A storm in the sea is a very small thing... W
HEN the sea is calm it is a pleasure to travel on it, and when the sea is rough there is no worse illness than seasickness. So is the powerful mind, the mind of a soul that has touched perfection: it is with tranquility, calmness and peace that this mind gives everyone a way into it, as the sea lays itself with open heart before those who journey on it. Ships and boats pass through it, those who journey enjoy their traveling. But when the sea is disturbed by the wind, by storm, it is perfect in its annoyance, it can shake boats and steamers. And so the mind of the sage can have an effect upon all things in nature; it can cause volcanic eruptions, it can cause disasters, revolutions, all manner of things once its tranquility is disturbed. Knowing this nature of the sage's heart and knowing the great powers that a man who has touched divine perfection possesses, people in the East regard closely the pleasure and displeasure of the sage. They think that to annoy a sage is like annoying the whole of nature, to disturb his tranquility means to shake the whole uni-
verse. A storm in the sea is a very small thing, whereas the heart that has touched perfection, if once upset, can upset the whole universe. The water of the river is sweet. It is sweet
MATTER & SPIRIT because it is attracted to the sea, it is longing to reach the sea. The river represents the loving quality, a quality that is seeking for the object it loves. A heart that loves God and His perfection is likened to the river that seeks the sea. It is therefore that the personality of the seeker is more pleasant than the personality of the one who is contented with what he knows. There is little danger in traveling on the river, there is great joy in swimming in the river, and there is a fine scenery along it to look at. So it is with the personality which is like the river: that running of the feeling of sympathy, that continual running, means a living sympathy. The river helps the trees and plants and the earth along it. So does the kind, sympathetic person whose feeling is
To worsen the situation for other national parties and right-wingers, Owaisi brothers were successful in getting the downtrodden Dalits under their wings. Dalits in rural Maharashtra, particularly in Marathwada face the same plight like the Muslims. They also have a feeling of being rejected by the main-stream society of upper-caste and class. Moreover, they lost their faith in the established Dalit leadership, who they feel only thought of their own well-being and promotion and did not live up to the expectations and aspirations of the vast majority of the oppressed class.
Taking Dalits to their side Very cleverly though, Owaisi brothers in their every speech and literature mentioned the sorrows and plight of Dalits and the selfish behaviour of their traditional leaders. In Aurangabad, MIM fielded half a dozen Dalit candidates on its ticket. The effect was natural and devastating for all factions of Republican Parties. Now three Dalits are elected as MIM members in the Aurangabad city body. This is a beginning of the change. If this trend continues, the MIM would be a decisive threat to the very existence of the leadership of Ramdas Athawale, Prakash Ambedkar, Jogendra Kawade etc., who so far ruled the Dalit vote and used it as a negotiation tool to deal with national parties like Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party and regional forces like the Shiv Sena. The MIM that has now shown that they are serious players, however, have yet not developed even second-rank leadership from within. As a result, the entire election campaign, whether in Bandra (East) or in Aurangabad solely depended on the charisma of the Owaisi brothers. But if the party wishes to stay put in the state and strengthen its ground network in rural and urban areas of Maharashtra, the Owaisi brothers would have to hand over the baton to local leaders. Imported leadership does not always work, particularly in general elections when 288 seats go for vote. The acid test of the MIM in Maharashtra would be in 2017, when all major municipal corporations, including Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nashik and Nagpur will go for elections. That would be the semi-finals before the next Assembly and Lok Sabha polls scheduled for 2019. Will the MIM live up to the expectations and aspirations of the Muslims and other downtrodden electorate? That is the moot question! @BharatkumarRaut liquid: everywhere he goes he takes with him that influence which nourishes, which helps souls to flourish and to progress. Then one sometimes sees a little stream. It runs, it is not a river, it is a small little stream running, and it is even more beautiful to look at for it expresses modesty, it expresses fineness of character, it expresses purity. For always the water of a little stream is pure. It expresses the nature of an innocent heart, the heart that cannot be prevented from being sympathetic, from being loving, by any experience of the world which makes water turn bitter. The bitter experience has not touched it, and it is pure and clear. It inspires poets, it uplifts a composer, it quenches the thirst of the thirsty one, it is an ideal spot for a painter to paint. With its modesty it has purity and with its purity it has life. There is also the water of a little pool. It is sometimes muddy, sometimes dirty. Why? Because of its narrowness, because it is small. In the same way the narrowness of the heart has always mud in it. Because it is narrow and because it is not deep enough, all the elements of the earth enter it and take away its purity. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

A FRIEND in need is a friend indeed and India has stood like a rock in support of its neighbor providing all necessary helps required to combat a tragedy of this magnitude. The Indian armed forces deserves all the complements and applause for working tirelessly. Nepal also happens to be a nation of temples. May the almighty give people of this country to stand on its feet again so that the world can enjoy its picturesque mountains and lakes in future. Other nations too should chip in with all possible help, as this is a natural tragedy and coming to the aid of human beings on humanitarian ground equates to service to God.

TRAGEDY struck Nepal is limping back to normal but the relief work is hampered by fresh tremors and intermittent showers. With no power, water and thundershowers forecast, fears mount of humanitarian disaster. Nature's fury struck our neighbouring country and the people of India share the sorrow and extend all the possible help in a record time. THE 7.9 magnitude temblor in Nepal raised many questions about Indian sub-continent about the high risk zone in our cities. It is re-
liably learnt that 60 percent of the subcontinental landmass is vulnerable to earthquakes. Barring rare exceptions, such as the Delhi Metro, India's hastily built cities are open to great damage from earthquakes. Very few buildings in India meet the standards prescribed in Indian Standards Criteria for Earthquake Resistant Design fire released by the Bureau of Indian Standards in 1962, the latest revision is in the year 2005. Miserable life front of hundred of politicians at AAP rally because his crops were damaged by unseasonal. Is government actually responsible for the farmer's loss of crops and his unfortunate end? The issue has turned out to become a political issue. No one can deny that the sad situation of loss in agricultural sector is a national issue but a farmer committing suicide on this account is in no way a political issue. To provide financial security to poor farmers, the government must ensure that it provides to save resources for them during rains, emergencies etc. Also to avoid such unfortunate suicide cases on account of financial problems by not only farmers but also all poor citizens, the root cause of all problems especially with poor must be understood and needful measures be taken by the government. — M. Court upholds beef ban Continued from pg 1 « makes possession of beef imported from outside the state illegal, therefore, remains. The court however faulted the government for imposing an overnight ban on possession of meat of bulls and bullocks even though it was lawful for over 30 years even after the state introduced a ban on cow slaughter in 1976.The court also made it clear that the police will not invade the privacy of a citizen by entering their homes to find out if the meat in their house is beef. The court asked the state to file a detailed affidavit in four weeks and has scheduled the matter for hearing on June 25.A bunch of petitions had challenged the legal validity of provisions of Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act that bans the slaughter of bulls and bullocks along with cows. The petitioners, that include a senior advocate Haresh Jagtiani, Jogeshwari resident Arif Kapadia and a Hindu-Muslim-Christian coalition of 29 Mumbaikars, had sought an interim stay on section 5D of the MAPA Act. This provision makes it a criminal and cognisable offence to possess beef, even if the animal is slaughtered outside Maharashtra where it is legally permissible, punishable with a jail term of up to one year. The petitioners claimed that the ban violated the fundamental right to choice of food. The state government on the other hand contended that there was no fundamental right to eat beef and the right to choice of food could be restricted by a valid law. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

Dev Goswami talks to Rekha Jain, the regional manager at Cocoon Fine Rugs, who tells us about the brand and gives up tips on how rugs can spruce up your home décor n Tell us about Cocoon Fine Rugs. What do
you think sets the brand apart? Cocoon Fine Rugs (CFR) is the only carpet boutique in the country that provides endto-end solutions for designer carpets, as well as wall art and floor furnishings. The rugs at CFR are a delight for carpet aficionados. Regularly introducing new concepts and unusual designs is what makes Cocoon stand out as compared to regular carpet store. n Most houses in Mumbai are quite small.

She will bring it back
What are the best ways to incorporate a rug in the décor of such homes? An area rug adds to the beauty of the space that it’s placed in. Sophisticated designs, opulent textures and diverse colour palettes can be used to introduce different moods into a space. If you are looking to change the mood of a particular room, a rug is a great option — it’s a lot more practical and far less expensive than altering other aspects of your décor. Colours work wonders — lighter shades tend to make the room look bigger as opposed to darker shades.

n Apart from your winning moment, what

This is exactly what Aafreen Rachel Vaz went through after she was crowned the 1st runner-up at the prestigious beauty pageant. We spoke to her about the competition, the challenges she faced and her future plans.
are some other memories that you will cherish forever? Winning the Campus Princess contest was another moment that will stay with me forever. n Have you begun preparations for the
n How does it feel like to have been
crowned the 1st runner-up? As an OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India) card holder, I was not eligible for the Miss World pageant, which was made clear to me before I took part in the competition. So, for me, the position I was aiming to win always was 1st runner-up. I did the best that I could, so I feel like a winner.
It was a actually just a stroke of luck, as Campus Princess picked me! n From whom do you derive your
n What challenges did you face while
taking part in Femina Miss India? It was an amazing journey. I learnt something new about myself and the way that I portray myself to the people around me every day. All my fellow contestants are beautiful, highly-talented women from different walks of life. I learnt so much from them. Towards the end, I could feel the difference in me and I was ready to shine on stage.
inspiration? My inspiration comes from several people. One is, of course, my mother, whose journey I have observed closely. Then there are writers such as J.K. Rowling, who can think of legendary stories while simply sitting in a train. I also draw inspiration from Sushmita Sen who greets anyone and everyone with a warm genuine smile, even today.
international title? Tell us about it. I am eligible for a number of international beauty pageants and the final decision will be disclosed by the organisation soon. I am not going to leave any stone unturned in my preparations. I will be working with several experts from different fields. My style director, Rocky S and stylist, Kavita Lakhani, will ensure that I look my best at all times. I will be working with my personal trainer, Sameer Purohit, to get a stunning, strong body. I look forward to improving my overall grooming with experts such as Shivalika Sharma and Shamita Singha. These women are perfectly poised, graceful and have the best appearance and diction, so I am confident that I will be one of the most polished delegates on the international platform. Also, I have an amazing online team and super organised model managers who help maintain my public profile.
n Did your parents support your choice? n You’re a medical student — why did you
decide to be part of the glamour industry?
Absolutely. They know that I will become a fantastic doctor as well as a great performer.
n What are your future plans?
Right now, I’m focussed on bringing the international crown home.
n What should people consider when they’re
buying a carpet? People should not be afraid to experiment with patterns, textures and colours. Pick a unique design that you find appealing and do up the surrounding space with complementary furniture and accessories. Most importantly, remember that rugs travel well from room to room as well as house to house, so think long term when you purchase one. n What is your opinion of the market for
carpets and rugs in Mumbai right now? CFR has witnessed the presence of many Bollywood personalities, personal shoppers, industrialists and leading interior decorators from India as well as across the globe, with their prime focus on gaining the utmost quality, excellence and service. In Mumbai, several young home-owners and business executives are open to the idea of using carpets in their homes and offices. n What changes in design can we expect from
Cocoon Fine Rugs in the future? We draw inspiration from different periods of fashion, carpets, art and even graphic design while conceptualising new carpets. I am sure that these, as well as newer sources, will continue to inspire our creative team as we move forward.

Pretend sideburns Sara Shah & Anindra Siqueira tell you about a new trend that’s sweeping through the fashion industry
T
he thought of anything plastered on your face may not seem appealing, considering how sultry the weather has been lately, but sideburns for women are in vogue right now. You read that right -— sideburns! If the idea has you cringing, don’t worry, we’re not talking about a full-blown mutton chop. The look ranges from simple styles (pulling a few strands of your hair in front of your ears), to create faux sideburns. And though we were initially skeptical, the look has slowly grown on us. Some women have natural sideburns, while some have to do with creating an illusion. Sideburns are quite evident, especially when you pull your hair up into a top-knot. Read on to find out how to rock this unusual, but fun look. We also asked a few hairstylists to tell us what they think of the trend.
Styling your SideburnS n Sideburns require minimal styling. Michelle
suggests using appropriate styling techniques to style your sideburns. “Use good quality hair products to style your sideburns. Aim for a slick, polished look. If you want to take it to the next level, you can even change the colour of only your sideburns to draw attention to them,” she says.
n You can also pick a slightly less polished look to
channel an effortless vibe by leaving the hair slightly wispy. But, make sure it’s wispy, not frizzy!
the trend — expertS Speak You probably remember complaining about how difficult it was to get rid of those wispy hairs on your face because the girls at your school told you that you look like a boy. MUMBAI | THURSDAY, APRIL 30, 2015 times on the runway, especially on model, including Alexa Chung. Women all over India must have heaved a sigh of relief as sideburns have always been more prominent among Indian women, especially because of the darker colour of our hair. While it may be a raging trend on the runway, has everyone warmed up to it yet? Michelle Ribeiro, a freelance hairstylist, definitely has! “It may be a manly trend, but in today’s day and age, anything is possible! Women have adopted trends that were ideally masculine and men too, have done the same. If worn well, with the right amount of styling and care, I think women can definitely look as hot as men do with sideburns,” she tells us. Jharna Shah, owner of Jharna Shah Make Up Academy, Boutique and Spa, is also a fan of feminine sideburns. Speaking about the trend, she tells us, “Sideburns, or side whiskers, were a trend for guys, especially during the ’60s; remember Elvis Presley and his side burns? It was all about masculinity. But, they lend a gentle, delicate touch to a woman’s overall look. As a style expert, I can say that sideburns accentuate a woman’s facial structure. Drawing out a few strands of hair from behind the ears frames the face beautifully. It is an art to look careless and alluring. It is also very retro and was sported by several actresses in the ’50s and ’60s. And, the trend of sideburns for women is a welcome change.” Veena.K, founder of Naturals Hair and Beauty salon, however, disagrees. She says, “Sideburns have been in and out of fashion for years now and have been subject to fashion trends in a manner similar to hairstyles. Regardless of your sideburns style, you should remember that it should be in sync with your hairstyle.”

We are a little partial towards Kiran because we are in complete awe of her sense of style. Just look at how quirky she looks here! The dress, the white shoes and the sling bag make her look perfect for a casual outing. Her bold lips add a delicate charm to her look and we also love the neckpiece that she is sporting. She deserves a 10 on 10 for this look!
While one sister disappoints, the other one never manages to fail with any of her looks. Smelling like chocolate all day long sounds appealing, doesn’t it? As soon as you pop open the lid of this massive cocoa butter formula, the scent of chocolate wafts through the room. It’s strong enough to leave you smelling sweet through the day, but not like you spilled chocolate sauce on yourself during lunch. The body butter claims to soften, smooth and relieve dry skin, which it did, even though the slightly thick texture made it a bit difficult to apply. It takes a while to get absorbed into your skin, leaving a slightly sticky residue that I didn’t quite care for, and which went against their nongreasy promise. But, at the end of the day, you will be left with the smoothest skin! I wasn’t privy to any of the scar and mark reducing properties, but there may still be time for that. The quantity impressed me as much as the smell — the 250ml lasts for ages, making it value for money. price `425 where Available at all leading pharmacies and retail outlets rating ****

While we love what Jacqueline is wearing, the top looks a little too tight on her. The fat oozing out near her armpit doesn’t look appealing at all. Also, her makeup is too bright and doesn’t really work with her outfit. We would have loved neutral makeup and bold lips on her. However, she deserves brownie points for wearing her hair oh-so-perfectly!
Parineeti has never been appreciated for her sense of style, so we aren’t really surprised with this look of hers. The jacket is extremely ill-fitted and she looks like she just walked out of a dance routine. The only thing working for this look are her shoes and the skirt. Take some lessons from your sister Parineeti!

With her movie coming up, we’re sure that we are going to see a lot more of Zoya. So, we aren’t basing our judgement on this particular look. While the dress is good, we would have preferred it to be much shorter. The shoes and her bag are an absolute mismatch, so we don’t even want to comment on that. Hope to see something better in the future!

The honeymoon phase We know how exciting it is to be in a new relationship. All you want to do is talk to him, and when you’re apart, you dream about spending time with him. But, are you letting your new romance affect your work? Dev Goswami helps you ensure that it doesn’t mess up your career
W
hen you’re in a new relationship, a mix of hormones will affect and change you, even if you’re the most logical person. You know the things we read about in romantic novels? All that constant daydreaming about your next date and yearning to hear his voice? Well, that’s going to happen, however much you try not to let it affect you. For the first few months of your relationship, every other aspect of your life will seem less important than your partner, and while there is nothing wrong with being over the moon about your love, it can have a negative impact on your work. Your colleagues and your boss will understand if you’re happy and excited, but they won’t appreciate a nosediving work ethic. So, read on as we tell you how to keep your new relationship from affecting your work.
>> Make sure that your work is your priority at the office and not your new relationship
set clear boundaries Not between you and your partner, but for yourself. The only person who will be able to help you avoid the pitfalls of a new relationship vis-a-vis work is you. If you can’t accept the fact that your professional and your personal life must remain separate, your work is going to suffer — you’re going to miss important deadlines because you were too caught up thinking about him, or you’re going to end up doing shoddy work because you were too distracted checking your phone for a message from him. Keep telling yourself that when you’re at your office, your work must be your priority. If you find this hard to follow, we recommend you try to follow our next tip to the T.
Maintain distance Maintaining some distance will help both your work and your relationship. Quite often, new relationships tend to lose their spark because one of you opens up too soon. Being in constant touch with him through the day is the easiest way to run out of things to talk about. And, we all know what that means — the doubtful thought that you’re not right for each other will soon follow, once you’re stuck, trying to think of something interesting to say. So, not talking to each other when you’re at work will not only ensure a better
conversation later, it will also stop your relationship from affecting your work. Of course, this doesn’t really work if you substitute talking to him with stalking his Facebook profile!
don’t ask colleagues for advice A new relationship may not have the serious problems that are associated with a year-old relationship. But, it’s going to come with a lot of doubt and second-guessing. Is he just fooling around or is he genuinely interested? Why hasn’t he replied yet? There are several things you will be wondering about. And, you’re going to want to turn to someone for advice. But, don’t let that someone be one of your colleagues. First of all, unless they are very close friends, they aren’t going to appreciate being drawn into your personal life. Second, talking about this at work will directly

dealing With office Politics My boss recently updated the software that we use and while there were several aesthetic changes, the way we worked remained more or less the same, so we didn’t need to do or learn anything new. However, he then decided to change the template we are using, which messed up everything! I was on leave on one of the days that we were sorting things out, and he told everyone that it was my fault. I found out only when some of my co-workers questioned me about it. I explained that I hadn’t done it, but I didn’t implicate him. I’m not sure I can trust him anymore — this isn’t the only such incident. What should I do? How do I react in such situations? — Pallavi rajpurohit, Parel dear Pallavi, This is a pretty basic case of office politics. It
seems as though your boss finds it very easy to confuse others about the real cause of the problem, a move that protects himself and, by extension, his position of power. People like him generally choose weak targets or latch on to targets of opportunity. Standing up for yourself is the correct thing to do, but that is pretty much all you can do. Doing so makes you less open to his attacks. Your boss is the type of person who will only help you if it is in their best interest to do so — a character type that is often glorified, albeit negatively, in popular culture. You will have to decide whether you want to remain in this workplace. You could be constantly fighting to maintain parity or you’ll see instances where others are thrown under the bus just so that your boss can maintain the status quo and pacify his ego. Take that into consideration while deciding your next move.
hamper productivity, because even if you’re not talking to your boyfriend, you’re talking about him. If you really do need a second opinion, ask your friends (or your colleagues), but do so after work.
don’t bring hiM to your office We know how excited you are to show your boyfriend off to your friends and colleagues. Taking him to you meet your friends is fine, but bringing him to the office when you’ve been dating for only a few weeks is not. This is because once you do that, it’s going to subconsciously make you think that he’s now part of your work life and that’s what you need to avoid. It’s alright if he picks you up from your workplace, but we recommend that you introduce him as a friend until the two of you have gotten past the honeymoon phase.

This hush-hush treat, which basically involves reaching an orgasm with the help of yoga, is out in the open, and everyone’s scrambling to get their fill. But, is it just a fad? Dr. Anil Patil, MBBS MD, and a pioneer in integrated medicine, tells us, “Yoga does help women achieve an orgasm. Meeting friends or playing a sport. 2. Do your children help you out in the kitchen? a. Yes! They love cooking with me. b. Ashwini mudra is a beginner’s technique. It is relatively easy to perform and precedes some other techniques such as Mula bandh and Vajroli. Dr. Anil tells you how to perform this pose properly. n Get into the lotus posture by folding your right leg over the left, and relax for a minute. Breathe freely and deeply. n Inhale deeply, filling the lower part of your lungs and hold your breath. n Contract your anal sphincter muscles (muscles that control the exit of the urine) with a 1-2 second intervals. Perform five contractions. Five is the average number of contractions that are required to push the prana from the pelvis to the head. n Relax your anal muscles completely between the contractions.
nAvAsAnA
This is also known as the boat pose and it uses your entire core. Since this pose cuts off blood circulation to your groin and genitals, the blood surges back when you release the pose, stimulating the area. n Sit on your mat with your back straight and your legs stretched out in front of you. n Lean backwards and bend your knees, lifting your legs off the floor. n Lean back until your shins are parallel to the floor. n Relax your thighs and stretch your arms out, with your palms facing your body. n Slowly straighten your legs and place your palms behind your head. Your feet should be higher than your head. Hold the pose for 5 to 10 breaths, then slowly release.
BAddhA KonAsAnA
The bound angle pose will help open up your hips and groin and will relieve any tension from previous sexual interactions, improving the health of your ovaries and prostate glands with the stimulation that it provides to your abdominal region. n Sit with your back straight and press the soles of your feet together, allowing your knees to splay outwards and downwards on your mat. n Interlace your fingers and hold on to your toes. n Stay in this pose for 1 to 5 minutes. n Inhale, lift your knees away from the floor, and extend your legs back to their original position.

Think you can fix our readers’ complicated problems? Read on... I am a freelance web designer and I recently bagged a project with D. D is a few years younger than me but such a genuine, oldfashioned gentleman... We have been working very closely on this project and it is a good thing I usually go for bad boys... Or I would be in trouble! As it is I am floored by him... He is... well...lovely!
Stop looking at me like that! I can’t focus!
And I have been dating S. It’s very casual but comfortable.

Y
ou’re out with your friends and you spot an attractive guy sitting at the bar, but you’re too shy to go talk to him. He’s sitting alone, so you assume that he is open to meeting someone. He looks around the room and spots you... But wait! His gaze lingers for barely a second. You don’t know what to do, but feel the need to find out his name at the very least. Does this situation sound familiar? We’ve all been there. But, while love at first sight may not really exist, don’t underestimate the power of simple eye contact — it has the potential to turn into so much more! People use their eyes to get attention quite often. It’s the easiest and most common technique out there. In fact, you may not even realise when someone else uses their eyes to get your attention. Here we tell you what to do the next time you see an attractive guy, but are too hesitant to approach him.
A brief GlAnce How do you get him to notice you, without standing on your seat and
waving your arms at him frantically ? You briefly glance at him. Being in a room together is an advantage, as you are more likely to notice each other. Make sure that you catch his eye and hold your gaze for at least three seconds before looking away. This is a sign that tells him you have noticed him. A point to remember is that you should avoid staring at him, unless you’re going for the creepy stalker first impression. Glance at him casually every now and then and it’s sure to pique his interest in you.
lAuGh A little Once you’ve got his attention, throw a smile at him the next time you glance in his direction. A smile is one of the most effective ice breakers and it assures the guy that you aren’t just looking at him because he spilled something down his shirt. Every once in while, when someone in your group cracks a joke, laugh and then look at him. Smiling and laughing will ensure that you look your approachable best.
« Dear grace, i have a problem... Dear Grace, The guy I was dating suddenly broke up with me. I was going through an unexpectedly bad PMS bout, which made me behave erratically and say some things that I probably shouldn’t have. But, he has started to believe that this is who I am. I’ve tried explaining things, but although he doesn’t mind talking to me (if I initiate it) he refuses to get back together. Is there anything I can do to convince him to
change his mind or have I lost out on a great guy because of a few moments of hormonal madness? — Sheela Pillai, Andheri

Hey, hey hey!!! Hi... Hi!!!
StoP StArinG!
I was actually so happy to see him there and for my friends to meet him! I got so caught up in chatting to him, I forgot to even introduce S... Then within 5 minutes of him meeting my sort of boyfriend... D left! He went very quiet and then just left...
That’s right! Once you’ve got his attention, of course. Not because it’s rude to stare, but because cutting off eye contact once he’s sure that you have noticed him will build curiosity — it will make him wonder why you aren’t looking at him anymore. Try and focus on him out of the corner of your eye to see how often he looks at you. Or simply ask your friends to tell you — if they’re in on the game, that is. If he looks at you often, you know that he’s going to reciprocate your advances.
Funnily enough as soon as he did, S got irritated with me...
MAke A Move This is going to make or break your chances. When you know that he is just as interested as you are, look at him directly, hold his gaze and pointedly smile at him. If he smiles back, you need to make a move before the night is over. Take this as a signal to go approach him and start a conversation. If all has gone well, chances are he’ll get up himself and come talk to you.

I don’t know what to do!” Neelam a) The first thing to do is break it off with S. Even if you are only just ‘dating’, he sounds like he hopes it will go somewhere and IF you don’t expect it to (with S), you need to perhaps need to take that step now. b) You might be reading too much into that one incident with respect to D. However, it’s pretty clear that you aren’t as into S as he’s into you. And that by reading so much into D’s leaving, you actually are into him. Ask D out! c) It sounds like you do have feelings for D, but being otherwise occupied with S, you are stopping yourself from exploring them. Netanyahu told visiting Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis that his country sees India as an important partner and he was looking for broader cooperation, reports PTI. The Israeli premier has consistently maintained that “sky is the limit” in India-Israel ties since his September meeting with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Fadnavis’s calls for Israeli defence industries to “Make in Maharashtra” also received a favourable response from Netanyahu. “Israeli Defence Industries are looking for proper places with skilled workforce and would be happy to explore opportunities in Maharashtra given its strengths,” Netanyahu told Fadnavis. Fadnavis had appealed to Israel’s defence industries to set up manufacturing units in his state earlier during his visit and today met officials at Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to promote such an investment. “As you all know that Israel is the second largest supplier of defence equipment to India. So I think it is not just time to supply, it is also time to manufacture in India and especially in Maharashtra,” he emphasised. The chief minister also discussed at length the strengths of his state that make it a preferred destination for investments.

AAP under attack on Tomar, farmer’s suicide

While BJP, led by Delhi Chief Satish Upadhyay, protested outside the residence of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal demanding Tomar’s dismissal, Congress mocked AAP for failing to live up to the standards of even a “students union” in organising the rally that saw farmer’s death.

Another major challenge would be hilly districts where the problem could be serious because of difficulty in accessing.
ATHMANDU: Quake-hit Nepal is now grappling with a new challenge — how to deal with postdisaster diseases like diarrhoea and respiratory infections, as water and sanitation are emerging as major concerns. Health experts fear outbreak of diseases like diarrhoea, acute respiratory infection, eye and skin and health issues, adding to the woes of survivors, who are homeless and are struggling with scarcity of food and water supplies. Moreover, injuries due to earthquake like fractures, spinal cord injuries, psychological trauma and child health are major issues that are worrying the health experts. “At the moment, we are worried with post earthquake- related diseases. We are expecting viral and water-borne diseases,” Dr P V Chand, chief of Policy and Planning and International Coordination Committee, Ministry of Health and Population, told PTI. “We have informed district authorities to gear up for the situation. We are planning to make people aware of the diseases which could come in coming days,” Chand said. Providing clean drinking water is also a major challenge, as Nepal relies on tankers and wells for fresh water. But if it is not run well, then it could be a negative thing," he said while speaking at a White House press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe yesterday. The US initially urged its allies not to join as founding members of the Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), which is in the process of being established in Beijing with initial capital of USD 50 billion. China has signed up some 57 countries as founding members. "Asia needs infrastructure. There are a lot of countries that have difficulty financing infrastructure, but if they got that infrastructure put in place and developed, they can grow much more rapidly. And that's good for everybody. It's good for that country. It's good for the world economy. It's good for us," Obama said. Obama said the US wants to ensure that the standards for the projects it backs are high. "What we have said and what we said to all the other countries involved is exactly what Prime Minister Abe said, which is, if we're going to have a multilateral lending institution, then you have to have some guidelines by which it’s going to operate," said the US President. "There may be weighted votes in terms of who's the biggest contributor, but you've got to have some transparency in terms of how the thing is going to operate - because if not, a number of things can happen. "Number one, money could end up flowing that is misused, or it doesn't have high accounting standards, and we don't know what happens to money that is going into projects," he cautioned. "So our simple point to everybody in these conversations around the Asia Infrastructure Bank is let's just make sure that we're running it based on best practices, based on what we've learned from the entire post-war era and how other multilateral financing mechanisms have worked," Obama said.

ven as the country faces a shortage of 19 million houses, around 10.2 million completed units are lying vacant, which can be absorbed under rental housing programme for weaker sections, says property consultant CBRE. According to it, around 56% of the shortage of 19 million units, is from the economically weaker section (EWS) with an average annual household income of up to Rs 1 lakh, while around 40% in the lower income group (LIG) with an income of Rs 1–2 lakh. The "Primary reason for this supply–demand mismatch is the paucity of formal housing options low-income population with low affordability levels...The lack of access to formal credit along with high priced home loans and debt, leave them with little more than squatter
colonies, urban slums and unauthorised settlements by way of affordable accommodation options," CBRE South Asia Chairman and Managing Director Anshuman Magazine said. According to the Ministry of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation (MoHUPA), Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Gujarat constitute about 76% of this urban housing shortage. "Despite a housing shortage, around 10.2 million completed houses are also lying vacant across urban India. Although the larger focus has traditionally been on ownership of housing, the significance of rental housing cannot be emphasised enough," he said. Magazine opined that rental housing offers a convenient and cost effective option for migrant
populations, who may not want to make long-term financial commitment in a city."While the higher and middle income members of these groups have the option of hiring apartments and bungalows in upmarket and middle class residential areas, the LIG and EWS groups are left with hiring rooms and slums in unauthorised colonies and urban villages," he said. He further said the government is currently working towards the promotion of rental housing stocks through legislative support including preparing Draft National Urban Rental Policy 2015 and Draft Model Tenancy Act 2015. "A recommended strategy will lie in addressing issues related to institutional implementation to encourage adoption of the policy at central, state and municipal levels in a time-bound manner," Magazine added.

B
oosted by improved market sentiment, the total value of merger and acquisition deals involving Indian companies touched USD 28.6 billion in 2014, says a report. Global consultancy firm EY yesterday said that as many as 870 M&A transactions were announced last year. "The aggregate disclosed deal value for the year stood at USD 28.6 billion, 6 per cent higher than 2013, a significant improvement in terms of deal value," it said. According to EY, announcement of policy reforms by the government and improved market sentiment helped in increased M&A activity in the country. In 2014, as many as 494 domestic transactions were announced and their aggre-
gate disclosed value stood at USD 16.2 billion. During this period, the largest transactions included Sun Pharmaceuticals' buyout of Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd from Japan's Daiichi Sankyo for USD 3.2 billion and Kotak Mahindra Bank's acquisition of ING Vysya Bank for USD 2.4 billion, the report said. "Optimism regarding accelerated growth of the Indian economy owing to the new government's focus on policy reforms... And highly leveraged companies divesting their assets for repayment of loans and address interest costs, were the primary factors driving the domestic M&A activity," it added. There were 376 cross-border transactions involving Indian companies with an overall deal value of USD 12.4 billion.
Amit Khandelwal, Partner and National Leader (Transaction Advisory Services) at EY said that M&A activity is expected to remain strong in the coming months as the world economy gathers momentum. Meanwhile, the report said the value of private equity (PE) deals touched USD 11.7 billion across 469 deals last year. This is the second highest in terms of deal value and the highest in terms of volume of deals since 2008. "While deal value was driven by e-commerce mega deals, the prominence of start-up/early-stage transactions spiked the total deal number. Touching an all-time high at 254 deals, these accounted for more than half of the total deals in 2014," the report said.

HENGDU (CHINA): D Harika and Koneru Humpy came up with fine individual performances to win a silver and a bronze, respectively, even as the Indian eves finished fourth in the women’s world team chess championship here. Harika’s silver and Humpy’s bronze though were a big consolation for the team, overall it was a disappointing show by the Indian girls given the missed opportunities. The medal for the team was always within reach, but it failed to finish off well. Considering that the Indian team entered the tournament as a wild card, a fourth-place finish can be justified as a pretty decent show. However, the medal was within the grasp as the team finished just one point shy of China, which bagged the bronze. China was beaten in the final round by Georgia, who finished the event with an impressive 17 points to clinch the gold medal. Georgia drew just one and won the remaining eight matches in this roundrobin contest. Russia claimed the silver medal after defeating United States in the final round. They garnered 15 points in all. Atletico Madrid star Griezmann aims to get better Narine banned
By Abhishek Hore
N
EW DELHI: He is only behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in the La Liga scoring chart this season but Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann is not overawed at being spoken of in the same breath as the two superstars, saying his aim is to get better than the rest. The 24-year-old Frenchman has had a record-breaking first season in Madrid, finding the net 22 times. Real Madrid star Ronald leads the tally with 39 goals while Barcelona talisman Messi follows with 38. “I am focused on my work and my team. I don’t think about others,
only about getting better and better,” Griezmann told PTI during an interview. The striker, who represented France in last year’s FIFA World Cup in Brazil, wants to live up to the expectations of being the second most expensive signing in the Spanish club’s history. “I knew that people were expecting a lot from me due to having been the second most expensive signing of the club’s history, so I have been trying to give back that trust on the field, to make the fans and my teammates happy. “It’s a different style of playing but I knew that I could do it. I am confident and I knew that everything was
going to be all right if I worked hard.” Reigning Spanish League champions Atletico Madrid are currently third in the team standings behind Barcelona and Real Madrid, and Griezmann attributed the club’s success in recent years to its Argentine coach Diego Simeone. “I always say that I needed a coach like Simeone to progress. He encourages you non-stop, he gets the best of you because the player has no doubts in giving his all for him and the team. “In every training session I learn something new thanks to him. The success of the team is largely due to his way of motivating the players. He is key,” Griezmann, who had started his competitive career at Real Sociedad, said. Even as English Premier league leaders Chelsea monitors Griezmann’s situation at Atletico Madrid because of a buy-out clause of pound sterling 43 million, Simeone is adamant that the club do not sell its prize asset after just one season when he has a contract until 2020. Even Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich recently showed interest in the French footballer. Asked about the reported linkups, Griezmann said, “Many things are published in the world of football. However, I am just thinking about Atletico de Madrid. I work everyday to improve and to achieve successes with my team. I just think about that.”

After reviewing the footage of the game and analysis in Chennai, the BCCI has decided to ban his off-spinners. “Following the provisions of the IPL Suspected Illegal Bowling Action Policy, the Committee has concluded that Narine’s bowling action for his off-spinner, contravenes Law 24.2 (as read with Law 24.3) of the Laws of Cricket and therefore the player is now banned from bowling the off-spinner in matches organised by the BCCI, including the IPL. He may however continue to bowl his other deliveries (the knuckle ball and the quicker straight ball),” the BCCI said in a statement.

The Knight Riders, on the other hand, have a lot to ponder upon the batting, be it the order or composition. It is no secret that bowling has been their main strength, and in absence of Sunil Narine too, KKR did well to restrict the Super Kings to 134 for six. But it was their self destructive batting that messed up the chase. Besides their accuracy in bowling, it was also the batsmen who had complimented well last season to clinch the crown. on skipper Gautam Gambhir. Gambhir, who has been their leading run-getter with three half-centuries till now, got out for a duck yesterday and KKR eventually lost the match, chasing the modest target. At No. 6, Ryan ten Doeschate led the chase but did not get adequate support from the likes of Yadav or Pathan, who’s inclusion in the team is a big surprise. Despite his repeated failure, the KKR think-tank has been backing the man from Baroda, but so far he has looked just a shadow of his past. The defending champions look an ordinary team without the duo of Shakib al Hasan, who’s gone back to serve national team, Bangladesh, and Sunil Narine, whose report of a retest after being called again for suspected bowling is yet to be out.

Perform best under pressure, says Bravo
C
HENNAI: A brilliant last over by Dwayne Bravo helped Chennai Super Kings pull off a sensational two-run win over Kolkata Knight riders in their IPL match, and the all-rounder said he likes pressure situations as it brings the best out of him. “We did not bat well tonight. It is good to defend a small total and we proved ourselves despite not doing well with the bat. We have got good fast bowlers and spinners in our team. Obviously, MS (Dhoni) and the entire team looked upto me to finish off the game and that is the way I prepare myself. “These situations get the best out of me. I always keep my composure as I like these moments. There are few people in the world who actually cope with pressure,” said Bravo at the post-match
press conference last night. Defending a modest target of 135, Bravo was given the ball in the final over with KKR requiring 17 runs to win. He bowled the first three balls without conceding a run, and that enabled the Super Kings to eke out a narrow win. Bravo said more than his team’s batsmen faltering, it was KKR bowlers who did a good job. “There was no weakness and there were times when fast bowlers were doing well, we have got 200 runs and above. There are no weaknesses. Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum are best players in the world against short balls. We have to give credit to KKR bowlers. “I suppose we exposed them as well. It goes both ways. We are a humble team having very good players and
respect each other. We did not blow out to post big total but it is important that we won the game,” said Bravo. Meanwhile, Kolkata Knight Riders spinner Brad Hogg, who came up with a brilliant spell after replacing Sunil Naraine in the team, said the team was disappointed with the absence of the mystery spinner. There is uncertainty over Naraine’s availability as the report of the bio-mechanical tests, which he underwent at the BCCI accredited testing facility, is still awaited. “All I can say is feeling sorry for Sunil. I think it is disappointing that he has gone away. All of a sudden he has been put on the spot again. It is one of those, as a cricketer, I am not happy with the situation that Sunil and we are in at the moment. He has got a wonderful skill.Pressure situations get the best out of me: Bravo At 44, Hogg became the oldest cricketer to play in the IPL and the Australian bowler said he was enjoying his cricket at the moment. “As far as my role, at the end of the day at my age, I am enjoying my cricket. Very lucky that I have been picked up in the IPL tournament. Had a couple of years here already and to be playing for different franchise and experiencing different parts of India is fantastic. It is no different to any other team that got great bunch of players,” he said. Hogg admitted it was disappointing to lose a close game.

Ton-up Hafeez leads Pakistan’s strong reply K
HULNA (BANGLADESH): Opener Mohammad Hafeez hit an unbeaten century as Pakistan reached 227 for one in reply to Bangladesh’s 332 at stumps on the second day of the first Test in Khulna today. The tourists finally enjoyed a successful day on an otherwise miserable tour, where they were whitewashed 3-0 in the one-day series and lost to Bangladesh for the first time in a Twenty20 international Hafeez made 137 not out, his eighth Test hundred and the third in his last four innings, after Pakistan had ended Bangladesh’s hopes of posting a mammoth first innings total.
Hafeez has so far hit 12 fours and two sixes after surviving a narrow escape in the fourth over of the innings when TV umpire Paul Reiffel overturned a decision for a catch at the wicket off Taijul Islam. Hafeez put on 50 for the first-wicket with debutant Sami Aslam and 177 in an unbroken partnership with Azhar Ali, as the batsmen prospered in good batting conditions at the Sheikh Abu Naser stadium. Left-handed Aslam, who captained Pakistan’s under-19 team before making the grade at senior level, was caught down the leg-side by wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim off
Taijul. Azhar survived two dropped catches by Rahim to remain unbeaten at stumps on 65, reaching his half-century with a six off Shakib Al Hasan. The hosts suffered a blow when Rahim was forced to leave the field after tea with a bruised finger, leaving Imrul Kayes to don the gloves as Tamim Iqbal took over the captaincy. Bangladesh, who resumed at the overnight score of 236 for four, were dismissed for 332 soon after lunch. Left-arm seamer Wahab Riaz and leg-spinner Yasir Shah claimed three wickets each, while Hafeez and Zulfiqar Babar took two each.
