Rapist emerge from the darkness of night, grabs woman and at the point of the knife tries to rape her
By Zuber Ansari
R
apist's modus operandi: He emerges from the darkness of night, grabs a woman and at point of knife, rapes her. Police suspect that this man, Raees Mohammed Umar, must have made rape attempts on several women.
On Sunday night, he stopped a woman who was all by herself -- walking in the strut, frightened her by pointing the knife at her. He took her to a nearby shop and started to undress her -- all the time pointing the gun at her. At that point, the woman suddenly realising what was happening began screaming.
People hearing her cries came to the shop took out the knife and said he would slash her neck if they try to catch him. Somehow, he made good his escape. His next victim was a 35year-old woman. He adopted the same means, but this time one of the spectators rang up the police.
According to Senior Police Inspector Subhash Wele, they reached the spot fast and took the man into custody. "The caller has informed us that the man had beaten up a woman badly and that he had a knife with him. Later, after taking him to the station, we checked up his background and found he was a
criminal. He always targeted a woman at night, took her at knife point if she denied sex". The woman, who he tried to rape, on Sunday night told the police: "He approached me while I was walking along the road. He took out his knife and said he would kill me if I refuse to have sex with him. When I protested, he
seized my hand and took me inside a shop but I cried out. People began pelting stones at him. He told the people he would cut my neck and then he escaped". Raees has been booked under Section 354, 506 and 504 of the IPC. "We are doing investigations in all cases", Wele said.

In a heart-rending revelation of the severe drought situation that occurs in a few parts of Maharashtra, forcing a spate of farmer suicides, Vishnudas Sheshrao, in a two-part series, gives grim details of his own father, a small-time farmer from Parbhani district, who is presently involved in a life-and-death battle as he and a whole lot of other farmers struggle to deal with the catastrophic aspects of the severe drought that has adversely affected the Marathwada region

‘I won’t be surprised, if my father commits suicide tonight!’
U
nusually, I received a missed call from my father. That was his first ever call or missed call, tem it what you will, ever since he bought a mobile. For generations, in what has followed as an unwavering practice, father and son avoid speaking directly to each other. Our lines of communication are mainly through my mother or uncle. Though more than a trifle absurd, this is a practice which has been followed for many years. I called him immediately. My father is a small-time farmer from a village in Parbhani district in Marathwada which is notorious for recurring droughts and farmer suicides. “I am selling a bull and a cow,” he said. Though I did not agree with his thought, I said, “As you deem right!” The call was terminated in a matter of 90 seconds or so. After that brief conversation, I promptly called my neighbour and asked him to connect me to my mother. However, my mother did not come to attend the call. The neighbour then informed me that she heard my mother and father have a bitter quarrel the previous night. My cousin also told me that my

father had sold our bull and a cow to a butcher and had already taken issar (advance money) though my mother is totally against this idea, which was the prime reason for the bitter spat. No one had food for two days. If humans were forced to go hungry, one can easily gauge the fate of the cattle. My father is broke, broken down, call it what you will, lurching from one financial mishap to the other, even as Mother Nature has time and again, buried his dreams in what was a rather unfortunate hailstorm. In March this year, a hailstorm washed away all his crops, just a few week before the harvest. What’s worse, this scenario has been repeating itself for the last three years. Every year, he is going from bad to worse, or should it really be WORST. As he could not bear to see his bullock and cow dying without food and water, he decided to sell them off to a butcher. He thinks, in this case these animals will have at least a decent death rather than suffering of hunger for days on end. My mother though had a different perspective. She calculated that we possess a small quantity of kadaba (dry straw of jowar preserved from last year) and little kadol (green grass) which will effec-

When Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis went to visit Alibag, the visitors to the Gateway had to be kept away for a while; they had to wait till Fadnavis left the place. Belonging to no religion
Did you know that you can legally state that you belong to 'no religion'? The Bombay High Court’s judgment passed some months ago held that the government cannot twist someone’s arm into declaring his religion in any document, form or declaration. Thanks to a PIL filed by Dr Ranjit Mohite, Kishore Nazare and Subhash Ranware, a bench of justices Abhay Oka and A S Chandurkar ruled that every citizen of the country, a secular democratic republic, was conferred – under Article 25 of the Constitution which guarantees right to freedom of conscience – the right to openly say that he or she does not practise any religion. The three petitioners had initially sought issuance of a public notification that they belonged to ‘no religion’. The petitioner said they belonged to an organisation named Full Gospel Church of God, which constitutes of about 4,000 members. Although the name of the organisation understandably suggests that it may be a Christian body, the organisation does not believe in any religion. The petitioners maintain that although they believed in Jesus Christ, they did not believe in Christianity nor did they conform to any other religion, adding that they had a right under the Constitution to
declare the same. The Centre and Maharashtra government opposed their plea saying ‘no religion’ filled up in official forms cannot be treated as a religion. The High Court, on the other
hand, was of the view that India was a secular democratic republic with no state religion, adding that no state authority can infringe upon a person’s right guaranteed under Article 25 of the IPC.
Excavated remains of the Harappa civilisation.
Harappa in UP?
The Archaeological Survey of India during its excavations carried out at Chandyan village in Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh, found remnants of a house that correspond to the late Harappa period. The discovery is important since, according to archaeologists, this is the first time that evidence of
habitation pertaining to that period has been found in the upper Doab region between Ganga and Yamuna.Earlier in August, a human skull with a copper crown corresponding to the late Harappa period was discovered at a brick kiln site in the village. The ASI started excavation in the area on November 27 and found a number of items that pertained to the 4,000-year-old era.

We are certain that the Mumbai police is quite capable of handling any unforeseen incidences. However, on our part, we wish to take precautionary measures for additional safety and security. We are also concerned, especially with the safety of women patrons and so all our member hotels have decided to be vigilant and beef up security to avoid any untowardly incidents,” Malkani said. Since last year, hotels and
restaurants have been permitted to serve alcohol on New Year’s Eve until 5 am of the New Year. “We understand that some revellers would like to celebrate the occasion with wine and spirits. For these guests, we will make provisions for cabs so they do not indulge in driving under influence of alcohol. Wherever possible we will make note of the taxi number plates for additional safety. Within the reach of each hotel and restaurant, we will ensure that the parties will be celebrated in the right spirit. I wish to take this opportunity to wish everyone in advance, a very Happy New Year,” Malkani added.

Long wait for affordable dialysis By Khushboo Panjabi
T
he dialysis system which will reduce the financial burden of patients at the MT Agarwl Hospital in Mulund is still awaited. The organisation which was given land to start this facility has failed to do so after completing one year. Meanwhile several notices sent to them have yielded nothing, as the organisation has not committed a start date. Now the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to cancel the agreement if the organisation cannot deliver in one month. Last year the BMC had decided to award place under the Public Private Partnership (PPP model) to JITO (Jain International Trade Organisation) at the MT Agarwal Hospital to start a dialysis centre. The agreement was entered into on July, 2013, and the corporation had sent a letter to JITO on August 19, 2013, to start the centre as soon as possible, but to no avail. BJP corporator Prakash Gangadhare raised this issue with the Improvement Committee and demanded that the centre be started or the agreement cancelled. Gangadhare said, “If this centre is started, then many poor patients in the area will be benefitted. Dialysis costs Rs 500 – 1,000 at private centres and not everyone can afford it.” He said that he wants the centre to start by January. According to the agreement, JITO has promised to charge a considerably lesser amount of money for the treatment. The civic body will provide all other infrastructure facilities like water, light, land, etc.
In last one year, the BMC has sent six reminder letters to JITO but there has been no progress till date. Deputy Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kishor Kshirsagar said, “We will send a letter to JITO if they don't start the centre in the next month, then action will be initiated and the lease
agreement will be cancel.” Head JITO in Mumbai Sukhraj Nahar said, “Starting of the centre has been delayed due non issue of a no objection certificate from our Ghatkopar Unit. Once we get a request letter, then we will start the process." khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

Bangalore blast I HE Bangalore bomb blast has shown that despite all the safety T arrangements that are being made, terrorists still carry out bomb blasts. Following red alert issued few days ago, there has been in all major cities high-level bandobust. Despite it, however, a bomb blast was carried out by terrorists in Bangalore. A precious life was lost and some people sustained injuries. It is difficult to provide security at every nook and corner of the city. Our security forces cannot by themselves make every place in a city safe. They usually make security arrangements in places like railway stations, hotels, state Vidhan Sabha and in areas where crowds gather. And they keep ignoring all the time looking for trouble. The bomb blast in Bangalore has shown that the terrorists can — even when maximum security arrangements have been made — still strike. In Mumbai, for instance, there is high-level security arrangements at all places. Security folks in plain clothes move about and keep a watch. Despite all this intensive vigil, bomb blasts take place. In Delhi where the Republic Day parade will be held is likely to get maximum attention of the terrorists. What our security folks should do is to catch the terrorists and keep them permanently in jail. There are quite a few IM, SIMI and other terror groups freely moving across the country. We should not wait to arrest them till they actually cause blasts. Preventive detention on a large scale is the best way to keep terrorists out.

T was not plebiscite, as the outgoing Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had cautioned before the polling. Yet the Jammu & Kashmir election was very much tilted towards the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) which reminded the Valley of autonomy, the kernel of the plebiscite demand. The PDP, which has emerged the largest party with 28 seats, said during the election campaign that it would refurbish the state’s identity which, according to it, had been diluted by the ruling National Conference (NC). Perhaps this paid dividends. Unfortunately, the state which has been an example of secularism for the rest of the country has been somewhat polarized. The PDP won in the Muslim- majority Valley. However, the most blame is that of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). It has tried its best to polarise the society. It’s hush-hush campaign that the state’s integration meant little when the Hindus had no say in the affairs of governance. So electrifying has been the result that the party has jumped from 11 seats in the last election in 2008 to 25 seats.

the regular forces to take over the Valley by force. The Maharaja sought India’s military support to ward off the Pakistan onslaught. The then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru refused to extend any help until the state acceded to India. The Maharaja had no alternative except to signing the instrument of accession. The Indian forces flew to Srinagar at the nick of time because the Pakistani troops were almost in the precinct of the airport. Had the Pakistani forces not indulged in looting and delayed their departure from Baramula so as to arrive in Srinagar before the Indian forces, the history of Kashmir would have been different. Since the integration of Kashmir with India was in the hurried circumstances, although, Sheikh Abdullah was fully behind it. Nehru
Polarization in the state It is obvious that the polarization in the state has changed the complexion. Jammu has become a base of Hindus and the Valley that of Muslims. Incidentally, the BJP did not get a single seat in the Valley as predicted by Omar Abdullah, although it has increased the vote. The problem is not new. By electing the Muslims from the Valley, the Kashmiris enjoy a vicarious satisfaction of being separate from the rest of India. The candidates who sustain this illusion get the support. However, this is nothing new. The NC, founded by Sheikh Abdullah, a popular leader in Kashmir even when it was princely state, disseminated this idea when the state integrated with India after the lapse of British paramountcy in 1947. Maharaja Hari Singh, the Hindu ruler had the opinion to stay independent or join either with India or Pakistan. He preferred to stay independent. I have no doubt that Jammu & Kashmir, a Muslim majority state, would have come to Pakistan if it had been patient. The Maharaja declared independence and entered into a standstill agreement with Pakistan. India refused to follow suit because it appeared to harbour some other ideas. Impatient Pakistan sent troops followed by
BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar promised that the wishes of the people would be ascertained after the things had settled down. That eventuality never came because of changes in the global picture. Pakistan which was claiming Kashmir joined military pacts of the West and accepted weapons from it. Those were the days of the Cold War. The Pakistan’s action was taken as a step towards joining the Western bloc. Nehru said at that time that his promise to ascertain the wishes of the people of Kashmir did not hold good because of the induction of weapons by the West. The Pakistan’s government blames Nehru for going back on his promise but its acceptance of weapons by the Western bloc changed the situation and diluted Pakistan’s claim. The choice to join either India or Pakistan held the ground for decades. For some time the Kashmiris have raised the standard of independence (Azadi) a sovereign country of
What is ‘spiritual attainment’? T
HE definition of spiritual attainment can be found in the study of human nature. For the nature of man is one and the same, be he spiritual or material. There are five things that man yearns for: life, power, knowledge, happiness and peace, and the continual appetite which is felt in the deepest self yearns for one or other of these five things. In order to fulfill the desire to live man eats and drinks and protects himself from all dangers of life. And yet his appetite will never be fully satisfied, because though he may escape all dangers, yet the last danger, which man calls death, he cannot escape. In order to obtain power, which is the next thing, a man does everything to gain physical strength, influence, or rank. He seeks every kind of power. And he always runs up against disappointments, because he will find that wherever there is a power of ten degrees, there will always be another power of twenty
degrees to run up against. Just think of the great nations whose military power was once so immense that one could never have believed that they would suddenly collapse. One would have thought that it would take them thousands of years to fall, so great was their power. We need not look for it in history, we have just seen this happen in the last few
MATTER & SPIRIT years. We have only to look at the map. Then there is the desire for knowledge. This desire promotes a tendency to study. A man might study and study all through his life, but even if he read all the books in all the great libraries there would still remain the question, 'why?' That 'why' will not be answered by the books he studies, by exploring the facts which belong to outer life.
their own. How a land-locked state would keep its freedom intact without reaching an understanding either with India or Pakistan for a passage with the outside world is beyond comprehension. Yet azadi is what has swept the Kashmiris off their feet. Pakistan, which was once unequivocal opposed to the proposal, has now shed its objection. Its expectation is that the Azad Kashmir would ultimately join their co-religionist, the Muslims, in Pakistan. Whatever the twist of history, the fact is that India cannot hand over Kashmir to Pakistan, nor can Pakistan take Kashmir forcibly from India. The two have to reach a peaceful settlement for the betterment of the people and for normalization in the region. They have fought three wars and a mini one at Kargil. Both countries are also nuclear powers. But there is no end of hatred. No doubt, several futile attempts have been made to sort out the problem. The reason is that Pakistan considers Kashmir an unfinished task of partition while the state has integrated with India legally. All the formulas and proposals have failed to produce a solution because the party’s concerned are not really for an agreement but for the prevalence of their ideas.
Wasted 67 years The two countries have wasted some sixtyseven years in finding a solution to the dispute over Kashmir. Both can waste another 67 years if they do not come down from the pedestal of rigidity on which they continue to sit. Pakistan has brought in the factor of religion and has made the problem more intractable. The proposal that the Hindu majority Jammu joins India and the Muslim majority Valley Pakistan may reopen the wounds of partition. There cannot be one sided solution. There will have to be consensus. There can be a solution on the basis of British cabinet mission plan which envisaged the retention of basics of partition that has still kept India together. Ultimately, the partition formula came to prevail. A new proposal, which I suggest is that defence and foreign affairs of Kashmir under India should vest in New Delhi and likewise defence and foreign affairs of Kashmir under Pakistan with Islamabad. The rest of the subjects should be transferred to the Kashmiris and the border between the two Kashmirs should be abolished. This maybe initiate a new relationship, devoid of mistrust and hostility. In the first place nature is so profound that man's limited life is not long enough to probe its depths. Comparatively or relatively one may say that one person is more learned than another, but no one reaches true satisfaction by the outer study of life. The fourth kind of appetite is happiness. Man tries to satisfy it by pleasures, not knowing that the pleasures of this world cannot make up for that happiness which his soul really seeks after. Man's attempts are in vain. He will find in the end that every effort he made for pleasure brought greater loss than gain. Besides that which is not enduring, which is not real in its nature, is never satisfactory. Lastly, there is the appetite for peace. In order to find peace one leaves one's environment which troubles one. One wants to get away from people, one wants to sit quietly and rest. But he who is not ready for that peace would not find it even if he went to the caves of the Himalayas, away from the whole world. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

SOME TV channels were abuzz on Friday night with reports of Dawood Ibrahim being caught on tape talking to his business associates in Dubai by a western intelligence agency. It is an open secret that Dawood is in Pakistan. Pakistan would neither ever admit that Dawood is living there nor ever agree to deport him to India. India would be dreaming to even think on those lines. In fact, Pakistan lovingly nourishes and protects characters like Dawood and Hafiz. Therefore whatever has to be done has to be done by us independently. If US can do an Osama from across seven seas, then why can't we, staying so close by? The trouble with us is we have a very short-term memory. Almost 300 people were killed in the multiple blasts master minded by Dawood 21 years ago. And the killer is still openly flaunting his misdeeds. Almost 200 were killed in the 26/11 attack six years ago, and we are still trying to be a good neighbour to our enemy. How can we deliberately cease to think about these incidents so easily? With us and within no time, everything becomes business as usual. It is high time, Namo should take it up with Obama when he comes to India on January 26. We need to be ready face the consequences no matter what. — Chandrakant Kotian, via email

The real Congress THOUGH the Congress is celebrating 130 years of its existence, one question continues to beg for an answer. Is it the original Congress party established in 1885 by A O Hume? It could have been called so but only till November 1969. During that fateful month, consequent upon the vertical split in the party over the defeat of its official Presidential nominee, the party top brass had suspended Indira Gandhi from its primary membership. She left the party with her followers to form Congress (I), and the original entity came to be known as the Congress (O). It is the latter, the original, which subsequently merged with the Janata Party in 1977. Therefore, strictly speaking, this anniversary is the 38th birthday of the organisation formed in 1977 as Congress (I), - Congress (Indira). —Arun Malankar, Santacruz

This work includes reclamation of marshy land, increasing the level of land above sea level, flattening of one or two hills, diversion of the Ulwe river and relocation of some power lines. CIDCO's formula of providing 22.5 per cent land to the PAP has been by and large accepted by most farmers and land holders. Out of the 1,194 land owners whose 671 hectare land is being taken for the main airport structures, 1,134 have already signed the documents and have accepted the compensation. Under the 22.5 per cent formula, over 86 hectares of land has been allotted to these persons. The new second airport for Mumbai is to be built on a design-buildoperate and transfer basis through public-private partnership. The prequalification discussions were attended by many companies such as Tata Realty, GMR, GVK, IL&FS, ESSEL Infra, Ferrovial, Zurich Airports and Vinci. One of the main conditions is that the developer should offer the shortest period in recovering the cost and handing over the project back to the government.

‘Telemedicine’ to be launched from Melghat By A Special Correspondent
M
inister for Public Health Dr Deepak Sawant yesterday announced that the government will launch its Telemedicine project in the tribal region of Melghat in Amravati district from January 23. This is in sync with Shiv Sena pres-
Dr Deepak Sawant ident Uddhav Thackeray announcing his dream project 'Shiv Arogya Yojana' on September 7 which had talked about linking rural hospitals, especially in tribal areas, through Telemedicine. Speaking to newspersons at his Mantralaya office, he said that the scheme will later be expanded to cover the entire state. On the issue of the central government-funded Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC)-run hospitals in state, the Minister for Public Health disclosed that the Centre now wants the states to take up the running and administration of the ESIC hospitals in the state. Dr Sawant stated that the decision
would entail a burden of few thousand crores which will be hard to bear. There are 13 ESIC hospitals in the state, one of which is at Andheri. For the past few years the Centre has also not made any appointments to the ESIC board. Dr Sawant added that out of the total revenue generation, the Centre kept one-third of it and gave the rest to the state. He added that the Center has kept the 400-odd ESIC dispensaries running where it allocates Rs 500 crore for maintenance. The Minister for Public Health stated that the state cabinet will have to take a decision on whether or not to accept the Centers proposal. Commenting on the health system in the state, he said that the government will start recruitment process to fill vacant posts in the health department from January 15. The Shiv Arogya Yojana which was unveiled by the Sena president on September 7 at Sena Bhavan, Dadar, sought to provide quality advice of expert doctors from Mumbai to poor villagers in remote tribal areas of the state. Initially the scheme was to cover the 13 Shiv Sena offices across the state that have been video-linked to party headquarters at Sena Bhavan. Thackeray had then stated that once the Sena-BJP-led Mahayuti government came to power, the government plan is to link all district hospitals and governmentrun medical colleges through the project with Mumbai. Thackeray stated that the scheme involved specialist doctors in Mumbai who can share their experience with doctors across the state.

gurate the Kalyan Film festival. During his local travel, he interacted with the commoners. He was also obliged a few commuters by talking to the relatives of some of them over the phone. Many commuters told him about their grievances faced in their daily commuting.
he Opposition in the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) yesterday created chaos in the general body meeting with regard to bars remaining open on December 31. The last adjourned general body meeting was continued yesterday in a dramatic way leading to chaos by the opposition and general body members. The meeting which was suppose to start at 2 pm began at 4 pm without the presence of Mayor Sanjay More. As a result, the meeting was adjourned for 20 minutes, while the party leaders of the Shiv Sena and the Mayor were noticed having a meeting with the bar owners in the city. The Congress and NCP leaders therefore began protesting against the Mayor. More and commissioner Asin Gupta were busy having a meeting with the bar owners regarding December 31 and according to commissioner Gupta, the meeting was conducted with regard to some licenses for bar owners in Thane. Of the 800 bars in Thane, 40 per cent of them run without both the OC
(occupation certificate) and CC (Completion certificate) and 70 don't have an OC. "Both the mayor and the commissioner, instead of attending the meeting, were busy having a discussion with the bar owners in the city for an hour, which is against the rule of the corporation. Hence, we had asked the asked the officials to give a clarification on the same and an action against bar owners who step in without any permission was demanded," said Manoj Shinde, Congress corporator. Milind Patankar, ex-deputy commissioner, TMC, said, "Many proposals were signed by the mayor without any prior discussion, which is against democracy and the rules of corporation. The proposals which I was supposed to discuss are 89, 91, 94, 98, 99, 101 and 102, which consists of important issues including property tax, digging of roads and welfare of citizens etc. But the chaos of other members didn't give us a chance to speak. Hence I have written to the Commissioner, to take these issues again on agenda in the general body meeting.”

>> Find out what diets and workouts you can carry forward to 2015
2014 Through the course of 2014, we’ve seen several diets, workouts and fitness concepts come to the forefront, all promising to keep you in the best possible shape. But, as the year draws to a close, which ones should you take forward to 2015, and which ones should you leave behind? Dev Goswami & Yamini Walia speak to a few experts to find out
W
e’re sure that several new diets and exercises will pop up in the next year that you can look forward to. But, before you step into the new year, let’s take a look at some of the most popular trends from 2014 and find out whether our experts (nutrition expert, Saima Shaikh and fitness expert, Badal, from Anytime Fitness) think that you should forget or take them with you into the new year.
Diet trenDs This year, we saw a few new diets enter the spectrum of nutrition, but there were also several old ones that jumped back in style. Most of these focus on simple, minimal eating. Take a look at what Saima thinks about this year’s diet trends.
Paleo diet The paleolithic diet is based on a simple concept — eat what the cavemen (who were from the paleolithic era, which is where the name comes from) ate. Remember thought that there is no evidence to suggest that this is actually what they ate. The diet involves avoiding grains, eating a lot of meat (which provides protein), reducing your carbohydrate intake by staying away from starchy vegetables and focussing on a high intake of non-starchy vegetables and fruits for fibre. The diet is based on the premise that human metabolism hasn’t really evolved since the Stone Age. expert speak: Saima warns us about the dangers of consuming too much cholesterol if you follow this diet. Also,

remember that cavemen were hunters, which meant that they led very active lives. You will have to do the same (minus the hunting!) in order to counter the high fat intake.
Atkins diet Carbohydrates have gotten a really bad name through the year, bringing the Atkins diet back in focus. This is another popular eating plan that recommends minimal carbohydrate consumption. It aims to stimulate the beginning of a process called ketosis, where your body switches from using glucose as energy, to burning fat to produce the required energy. Reducing your carbohydrate intake means that there is no glucose for your body to use, triggering ketosis. expert speak: Saima tells us that you can definitely carry this diet is to the new year. However, she recommends that you speak to a nutritionist in order to draw up a safe, balanced diet plan. It’s important to consume a basic amount of carbohydrates in order to ensure that your body stays safe and healthy.
Go gluten free This, like 2013’s veganism, was not just a big trend, it was also a massive movement on social media. It involves eliminating gluten, a protein that is found in wheat and barley, from your diet. We’re not quite sure how it became supposedly healthy,
+ ## 0&,) (, ) * &,+ *+, 0 % )& %*. )
#&&" + *&$ %+ ) *+ % .&)"* &'* +& *+ )+ + 0 )
because this diet originated as a means to cope with celiac disease — which occurs when your body reacts adversely with gluten. expert speak: We’re sure that you know what we’re going to say next. There is no evidence that explains whether a gluten-free diet benefits healthy individuals who do not suffer from celiac disease. But, Saima does add that if you’re looking for instant weight-loss, you can follow a gluten-free diet for a few weeks — but no more, because you’ll risk putting yourself in danger.
Diet confusion This is a relatively new trend where you confuse your brain into eating less. It involves practices such as eating a bowl of unshelled pistachios (since they take up more space, a bowl full of unshelled pistachios will see you eating less than eating from a bowl full of shelled ones) and serving yourself in the kitchen to keep yourself from seeing the dish and wanting seconds. It also involves a psychological tips such as not making the habit of eating in your car, because otherwise you will always feel hungry when you’re in a car. expert speak: Saima tells us that this doesn’t work well for all. For some, she says, it might work wonders, but for others, it might not have any effect. So, whether you should follow it in the new year depends on you. She tells us that a better understanding of healthy eating habits is a much better way to avoid following an unhealthy diet. Continued on pg 14 «

The Mediterranean diet There are several versions of this diet, but the basic concept is to follow one that is similar to the type of food that is eaten as part of various Mediterranean cultures, which follow cuisines that have proven to be extremely healthy. Apart from maintaining a healthy weight, a Mediterranean diet can also reduce your risk of suffering from various diseases — especially those that could affect your heart. expert speak: Saima tells us that you need to be wellinformed before you begin such a diet. You’ll need to make sure that you choose the correct diet plan. Also, remember that this diet can actually harm you if you don’t support it with a physically active lifestyle, which is another important, but often ignored aspect of the Mediterranean culture.
>> Bodyweight workouts were popular this year and are a great way to build muscle and reduce injuries
>> While the Mediterranean diet is healthy, it only works if it’s supplemented with exercise
FiTNeSS TreNdS Take a look at what was popular in the world of fitness this year, and find out what Badal has to say about the trends.
Top 5 FiTNeSS GAdGeTS
Now that you know about what workouts have been trending, here we bring you a round up of fitness gadgets that gained popularity across the world in 2014.
Nike Fuelband
The Nike Fuelband is a wristband that has motion sensors to track your movement throughout the day, translating your activity into Nike Fuel points that let you compare your progress with other people.
High intensity interval training High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) was a big, big hit this year. It’s not an exercise plan, but a concept and includes workouts such as Insanity HIIT, Tabata HIIT, Jillian Micheal’s Bodyshred and Cathe Friedrich’s HIIT. These workouts include high-intensity activity, followed by short periods of rest. expert speak: Badal says that you can continue this in the new year. It boosts your metabolism, while increasing stamina and strength. However, remember to take safety measures before you begin with these programmes. Always warm-up before training, take longer rest periods and shorter intervals. Choosing the correct workout is also important. >> Personal training, though expensive, can help you achieve better results
Jawbone Up
Jawbone Up is a wristband that tracks the quality of your sleep. These fitness trackers have a built-in accelerometer, which helps you measure the amount of time that you have slept for, as well as the number of times that you have tossed and turned.
Bose Sie2i Headphones
Fitbug
A Fitbug is a wearable fitness tracker, which comes with a coaching plan and provides you with a daily progress report to help you stay on track with your fitness goals.
Nothing is more irritating than headphone chords that get tangled during exercise. This is exactly why we love the Bose Sie2i Headphones, which feature short chords.
The insanity Workout The Insanity Workout created quite a stir in the fitness world this year. This workout helps with weight loss, adding muscle mass and basically improving your overall fitness levels. You can perform this workout without leaving the comfort of your home and achieve desired results in a matter of just 60 days. However, remember that this isn’t easy. It requires you to constantly make the most effort. expert speak: This not a workout that everyone should follow. Badal says that it is only for those who are extremely motivated and want ripped muscles. He also adds that you should plan this workout under a trainer’s guidance, because it carries a high risk of injuries.
Short workouts
Griffin Adidas Micoach Armband
As the names suggests, the Griffin Adidas Micoach is an armband that can be connected to your iPhone to check your exercise statistics, as well as daily activity levels.
Fitness applications & devices Several fitness enthusiasts have begun to rely on fitness applications and fitness bands to stick to their fitness regime. With these applications, you can become your own fitness trainer — from planning your workout to evaluating the results. On the other hand, fitness bands are slowly picking up as well. These sensor-based gadgets give you a report of your overall health, helping you improve your workout and identify something that might be wrong with your body. expert speak: Badal says that fitness devices and applications are a great way to track your physical activity and workout and should definitely be promoted more in 2015.
personal training Working out with a fully certified, professional and experienced trainer was another big trend in 2014. There are obvious benefits — an occasional helping hand from your regular instructor at the gym won’t help you to watch out for injuries, incorrect posture and might even have you doing exercises that you don’t really need, or are too risky. expert speak: If you have the money, are a serious fitness buff, and want a well-sculpted body, go for it. Badal tells us that personal training can help you boost your motivation and ensure better, more effective results.
Body weight training Equipment-free workouts have been around for a long time, but in 2014, they truly went mainstream. Body weight training involves using your weight for resistance instead of relying on any gym equipment, making it an inexpensive and effective way to exercise. It includes exercises such as pullups and pushups. These techniques can help you gain strength, build muscle, boost your heart health, increase flexibility and burn fat. expert speak: There is no doubt that this is something that you can carry forward into the new year. Badal tells us that body weight training tones your muscles, while burning fat and also reducing your risk of injuries.
Short workouts such as the 7-minute workout or 15-minute workout are a time-saving and efficient way to lose weight. These workouts can be performed with your body weight, a chair and a wall and so, require no equipment. These workouts are touted to be safe and ensure that you make the maximum out of each and every minute. If you’ve downloaded applications for any of these workouts, watch the videos carefully before attempting them. expert speak: If you plan them correctly with the help of a trainer, you can carry this forward into the new year. However, if you don’t plan a workout that suits you best, you’ll just be wasting your time without seeing any results. Badal tells us that a good trainer will be able to design a circuit-based workout that will be challenging, short and effective.
resistance band based workouts If you’re bored of your regular workouts, then resistance band workouts are for you. Workouts such as the band-thruster, resisted push-up, reverse flyes, monster walk, split squat and curls are easy to follow and versatile. The bands stimulate muscle growth as they make it easier to control the resistance and keep it focussed consistently on the targeted muscle group. expert speak: Badal tells us that you should only take this trend forward only if you have no other way to stay fit. These workouts are effective, but don’t offer the same results as a normal workout and so, are best for those who are constantly on the move. A frequent flier, for example, can store a resistance band in his suitcase and use it to exercise, no matter where he is.

G
rapeseed oil has been known for its beneficial properties for a very long time and now, several companies are introducing its pure variety in stores across the city. While the oil was previously primarily used for cosmetic benefits, it’s also really great to cook with.. The high smoking point makes it a great oil (some say it’s better than olive oil) to fry foods in, as well as to make salad dressings and mayonnaise. It also promises good flavour that is subtle enough not to overpower the flavours of your food.
the benefits benefits of bone broth If you are still sceptical about including bone broth in your diet, take a look at some of its health benefits. healthy joints Several people take glucosamine supplements to protect themselves from joint pain and other joint-related problems. But, instead of resorting to medication, give bone broth a shot. It contains natural glucosamine, making it the perfect addition to your diet if you are worried about creaky joints. Collagen boost If your skin is feeling a little lacklustre or worse for wear, tank up on bone broth as it is a natural source of collagen, which helps plump your skin and make it look more radiant, and also gives you strong, shiny nails and hair. tummy troubles If you regularly suffer from diarrhea, constipation or food intolerances, incorporate bone broth into your diet. It contains gelatine, which helps seal holes in your intestine and also works wonders at curing leaky gut syndrome and relieving
BONE BROTH It may sound vile, like something out of a horror film, but bone broth is definitely catching on as a health food trend. Shirley Mistry tells you everything you need to know
What is it? Do you remember the chicken soup that your mother or grandmother made every time you were down with the flu? The kind that simmered over a stove for a few hours and was never poured out of a can or a sachet? Turns out, bone broth is just an upgraded version of your grandma’s trusty broth/ soup recipe. While most of us use stock cubes and concentrates to make soup, making bone broth from scratch adds a lot of flavour, and it is also extremely nutritious, devoid of chemicals, artificial flavours, additives and colouring agents. It is prepared by boiling bones of meat with herbs, spices and vegetables for a few hours, to infuse it with the minerals and vitamins that are present in the bones. Above all, you don’t need gourmet
symptoms such as bloating, gas and cramps. sleep tight Bone broth is also rich in glycerine, which helps you sleep better and works to improve your memory. So, if you have restless nights and can’t get restful sleep without waking up several times, have some bone broth.
ingredients to prepare it (check our box to find out how you can make bone broth at home), and it is an inexpensive way to give your family a good dose of nutrients.
so much stronger Minerals such as phosphorous, magnesium and calcium, along with vitamins and other nutrients present in bone broth gives you super strong bones, they also help boost your immunity. Bone marrow, which seeps into bone broth, helps strengthen your immune system and fight minor diseases better.
This oil may make cooking a simpler process, but it also promises to make it healthier. Grapeseed oil contains a property called oligomeric procyanidin, which is an antioxidant. It also helps your cardiovascular health and lowers bad cholesterol, while helping people with diabetes, improving circulation and relieving the symptoms of arthritis. It contains several fatty acids, helps reduce swelling and has beneficial astringents and flavanoids.
the risk
While the oil is really beneficial, don’t blindly pour it over your salads. Although it doesn’t have too many side effects, if you’re allergic to grapes, stay away from the oil. Mild side effects include nausea, dizziness and headaches and some people may even suffer from indigestion.
the test
Sula Vineyards recently launched a 100% pure variety of this oil that, of course, we had to try out. The allpurpose oil is touted as one with zero transfats and zero chemicals, which is great because several types of grapeseed oil do contain a scant amount of chemicals. The oil has a slightly nutty flavour that some may hate, but I think that it tasted best in a salad dressing. It’s easy enough to cook with and while it’s true that it doesn’t interfere with the flavour of your food, that may have been why I wasn’t particularly fond of it. It may just take a little getting used to though! Impressively packaged, long-lasting and well priced, it also serves as a really good moisturiser because it isn’t greasy and gets absorbed into your skin easily. *Pick it up from retail outlets such as Godrej Nature’s Basket, Haiko, www.localbanya.com, www.bigbasket.com and www.ekstop.com for `295

ith symptoms that are almost identical to a deadly physiological condition, and several misconceptions about the disorder floating around, panic attacks are often misunderstood. Answer these questions to find out if you know enough, and read the box below to find out more about the condition.
3. You purchase strawberries from your local supermarket. a. True. b. False. 4. You feel nauseous or flushed after a few days of binging on strawberries. a. True. b. False. 5. A day of piling strawberries on to every dish leaves you with a headache. a. True. b. False. Mostly As You are definitely eating too many strawberries! It’s time to reduce the amount of strawberries that you consume. They are not only high in sugar — just five strawberries contain the equivalent of 1tsp of sugar — they also contain fructose, a sugar that stops you from feeling full. So, even after eating several strawberries, you are going to be tempted to reach out for more snacks. Also, if you don’t buy organic strawberries, you run the risk of consuming harmful chemicals and might also consume too much vitamin C. If you’re experiencing nausea and headaches or are feeling flushed, it is time to cut down on your strawberry consumption. Mostly Bs While you may love the fruit, you know where to draw the line. Keep up the good work and don’t hold back from stopping someone around you who can’t get enough of strawberries.

UNderstANdINg PANIc AttAcKs A well-rounded knowledge of panic attacks can be extremely beneficial. Tally your answers with our guide below to see how many you got right, and learn more about panic attacks.
Nourish your baby’s skin Babies have skin that is extremely soft and sensitive, especially areas that are covered by diapers, as they are in constant contact with body waste. Sesame seed oil protects their tender skin against rashes. You can also apply it on their nose and ears to prevent infections caused by common skin pathogens.
7
It solves digestive issues If you suffer from digestive problems such as constipation, you should cook in sesame seed oil, because it’s rich in fibre. This high-fibre content boosts the smooth functioning of your intestine, facilitating waste disposal.
1. A. Heart attacks
9
Helps darken your hair Combining sesame oil with oils such as argan, coconut or olive oil, can help darken sun bleached hair. This mixture also minimises the appearance of premature grey hair for those who have black or brunette hair.
8
Heal your eyes Black sesame seeds are good for your liver because they increase liver blood. Since, your liver is also connected to your eyes, your vision also benefits from sesame oil. The therapeutic properties of the oil help to treat problems such as blurred vision and dry eyes.
Protect cracked heels If you’re suffering from cracked heels caused by dry weather, massage the oil on to your feet before going to bed and leave it on, wearing a pair of socks to keep the oil off your bedsheets. The oil will penetrate deep into your skin, providing immediate relief.
Panic attacks and heart attacks are so similar, that they are often mistaken for heart attacks and patients are admitted to a hospital. This is because the most common symptom of a panic attack is heart palpitations, which will make you feel as if you’re having a heart attack. Other symptoms include difficulty in breathing, chest pains, dizziness and a sense of terror.
2. B. False.
If you say this out loud, it can actually make the patient feel worse, which in turn can aggravate their condition. This is a mental disorder that anyone can suffer from, and those who do, cannot control their panic attacks.
10
3. B. False.
Panic attacks do make you feel as though
you’re going to pass out, but you won’t faint. You faint because of low blood pressure. However, when you suffer from a panic attack, your blood pressure actually rises and so, it is next to impossible for you to pass out.
4. A. true.
It may seem sensible to avoid situations that you know might trigger your panic attack. But, doing so (which is common for those who suffer from panic attacks) only makes the disorder worse, because it makes you more fearful, making it harder for you to overcome the condition. What helps is practising relaxing techniques to soothe a panic attack when you’re in such situations.
5. B. Helping them breathe slowly and ask them to count to ten. As we mentioned in the previous point, avoiding a stressful situation does more harm than good. So, if you see someone suffering from a panic attack, you should try to calm them down instead of moving them. Asking them to breathe deeply and count to
ten is one of the ways in which you can help someone.
6. B. False.
Panic attacks are dangerous, but they aren’t fatal. This misconception is a result of the scary symptoms of panic attacks, but, as we mentioned earlier, you won’t even faint. However, a panic attack can be emotionally traumatic. So, if you see someone suffer from a panic attack, don’t worry about physical harm, but ensure that they get immediate medical attention.
7. A. true
Certain foods such as caffeine and chocolate have been found to trigger panic attacks, while omega-3 and protein-rich food can reduce your risk of suffering from a panic attack. So, it is important to follow a healthy diet, especially if you’ve suffered from a panic attack in the past.
8. A. true.
Panic attacks are one of the easiest mental disorders to treat. Most patients see positive results within a few weeks of Cognitive
Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which is used to treat this condition. Not only is the treatment short-term, in most cases, you won’t even have to take medication for a long time.
9. A. true.
Even though this is rare, it does happen. Panic attacks that take place at night have the same symptoms as regular panic attacks and will see you waking up gasping for air. You might also feel disconnected from your surroundings and it may seem as though you’re watching yourself from far away.
10. B. False.
During a panic attack, you will feel like you have lost touch with reality and that you might do something embarrassing because you can’t control your actions. But, you aren’t as disconnected as you think and certainly won’t lose control over your movements. This feeling of going crazy, however, can be deeply unsettling, and so, it’s a good idea to let someone who is suffering from a panic attack hold on to someone’s arm or have someone near them as support, because this will help decrease their discomfort.

While we’ve all stubbed our toe against the door or the foot of the sofa after switching off the lights, and a minor toe injury heals on its own (even though it can take up to six weeks to heal), a serious injury, when ignored, can lead to serious complications that can last a lifetime. Dr. Hitesh Kubadia, orthopaedic and joint replacement surgeon at Nova Speciality Hospital, explains that when toe injuries are ignored, they can lead to deformities and worse, even arthritis. “When the big toe takes a beating, the injury prevents it from performing its main function, which is maintaining your body’s balance. This causes your toe to cross inwards and results in excessive pressure being applied on other, smaller toes. This can not only result in deformities, but can also lead to severe arthritis in the toe’s joints.” he explains. Since arthritis can occur in any part of the body that has joints, there is a possibility that it can leave your toes susceptible to it, especially after an injury. “Pressure on your toe’s joints can cause the cartilage to wear out and cause inflammation in the tissues. This is also a common problem amongst women who wear high-heeled shoes on a regular basis, as the entire balance and weight of your body is brought on to your toes,” says Dr. Hitesh. He suggests that you go in for an X-ray if the pain lasts for more than two days and the toe is swollen. Treatments include plastering or surgery, depending on the severity of your injury. Dr Hitesh suggests that you watch out for symptoms such as agonising pain, sores, redness and open wounds near the injured toe, numbness and bleeding, if there is an injury.
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2014 >> A thigh gap can be achieved without going to drastic measures such as starving and exhausting yourself
THIGH GAP!
That’s right, we’re talking about an actual, physical attribute that’s become a beauty industry craze. Shirley Mistry tells you everything about thigh gaps and tell you what exercises will help you achieve one What is it? A thigh gap is literally a gap between your thighs, which is most apparent when you stand. Made popular by supermodels across the world, the obsession with getting one has been increasing steadily, much like the obsession with 6-pack abs. While it isn’t an unhealthy physical attribute to desire, several people have reportedly undertaken drastic measures to attain a thigh gap, such as, starving themselves or burning out in the gym in a bid to achieve it. While nothing is worth harbouring a negative body image of yourself, there’s no harm in wanting to get a thigh gap, especially when it is achieved with the help of moderate exercising and a healthy diet.
Do it right We’d never recommend that you over-do your exercise routine or go on a strict, unhealthy diet to achieve the figure that you desire, so here are some simple exercises that you can incorporate into your daily workout to achieve a thigh gap.
#1 Bridges This exercise is simple, but will help you tone flabby thighs. Lie down on your back with your knees bent and your arms flat by your side, with your palms facing down. Squeeze your abs and bottom and lift your glutes off the floor, using your legs to support your body. You should form a bridge with your body, so that your upper back is touching the ground.
#2 Leg Lift Lie on your right side, with your legs placed one over the other. Then, slowly lift your left leg up, without bending your knee and bring it down, without letting it touch the other leg. Repeat this move for a minute, before you lie down on your left side and repeat the same with your right leg. Start off with a minute and slowly increase the duration. This one may seem easy, but will really work your thighs. >> A toe injury can lead to severe arthritis
#3 Cross step This is probably the easiest exercise on this list, because all you will need for this one is a staircase. Stand at the bottom of a staircase, facing the railing. Then, cross one leg, over the other and place it on the step ahead of you. Then, cross your other leg and place it on the next step. Start from the bottom of the staircase and work your way to the top. Try and cover as many flights as possible.
#4 scissor raise Again, this exercise might seem simple, but it will definitely you
break you into a sweat. Lie on your back and lift your legs straight up, until they are perpendicular to the ground. Then, spread your legs to form a V shape and pulse in this position for a minute. Slowly increase the duration in order to ensure that you are steadily pushing yourself harder.
#5 Wide stance squats We can tell you from our personal experience, that this is one exercise that your body will feel, even the day after you perform it. Stand with your feet wide apart (a distance that is twice the width of your shoulders is a good estimate) and then squat as low as you can. Remember to keep your back and neck straight. Keep your arms stretched outwards or sideways, or in front of you, while you perform this exercise.

>> The ALS ice bucket challenge was a bit hit — especially on social media
STOCK From the Ebola outbreak to an increased awareness about several conditions, 2014 was a year filled with health news — both good and bad. Dev Goswami & Sara Shah tell you about the most important health stories of the year that you should know about
Ebola hit the world — hard The Ebola virus epidemic was probably the most widely covered health issue this year. The previously rare, unheard of disease, took the world by storm, breaking into a full-blown epidemic that spread earlier this year from west Africa and has slowly been spreading to other continents as well. Ebola spreads through contact with a patient or his/ her infected fluids such as blood. Symptoms of the condition are extremely scary and ravage the immune system, making recovery difficult, and often impossible, especially in its advanced stages. What’s worse is that there is no definitive cure yet, though several researchers have raised the hope of being close to introducing a vaccine or medication. This is something to pay attention to even as 2015 rolls around.
Extremely high temperature was, and will be, fatal for some The potentially deadly consequences of climate change were a concept that we studied about in school or read about in the newspapers. However, if you take the weather this past year in Mumbai (a mix of unseasonal rains, delayed monsoons and high temperatures up until the first week of December) into account, the onset of climate change doesn’t seem to be as much of a stretch. While climate change has already been fatal for many, a report by the World Health Organisation predicted that between 2030 and 2050, it could lead to an additional 2,50,000 deaths per year. The report also underlined the importance of taking preventive steps to combat climate change, and predicted that we will increasingly notice the negative effects of
climate change, with some of the biggest, harshest changes expected around 2050.
The ALS ice bucket challenge got both support & criticism You can love or hate this challenge, but it’s impossible not to have heard of it. The ice bucket challenge, which started as an awareness campaign, spread like wildfire on social media, especially when several celebrities and prominent personalities from different fields began participating. Soon, people introduced spin-offs such as the book bucket challenge and India’s own, rice bucket challenge. While people were critical of the waste of water and the gimmicky nature of the campaign, it did serve the purpose of raising awareness about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the nerve cells in your brain and spinal cord, making breathing, speaking and swallowing difficult. Patients are known to have a life expectancy of merely five years once they’re diagnosed with the condition. The year also saw a study that claims to have found the origins of ALS, which, once peer-reviewed and confirmed by further research, can help find a cure, which is definitely something we’re looking forward to reading more about in 2015.
ObamaCare caught everyone’s attention Mired in controversy and tangled in numerous, embarrassing technical glitches, ObamaCare (officially known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act) was largely ignored in India. But, just because it doesn’t affect healthcare in India, doesn’t mean that you
shouldn’t be aware of it. The act promises to offer a range of protections, subsidies and services to make health insurance in the USA more effective and affordable. The act is aimed at regulating the health insurance industry in the USA and at protecting citizens against malpractices — a common charge that the healthcare industry faces in several countries, including India.
making people self-conscious about their bodies, there have been several issues that studies and medical papers have addressed this year. Simultaneously, the trend of taking a social media detox has been a big hit, with medical experts even recommending it as an effective way to lower stress and keep mental health in order. This focus, we believe, will definitely continue into the new year.
Orthorexia went mainstream
Antibiotics are a no-no
Every year, there are a few conditions that get some much-deserved attention. This year, it was orthorexia — a proposed disorder that is linked to a maniacal obsession with eating healthy food. It can have a negative impact on a person’s social life, as the condition might cause the person to avoid contact with other people in order to ensure that they don’t eat anything that is unhealthy or unclean. The proposed eating disorder (studies are ongoing) was under a pretty bright spotlight this year and we, at Health & Fitness, published a feature about it as well!
The rise of super bacteria and their aweinspiring resistance to normal antibiotics drew more attention to the harm caused by the overuse of antibiotic medication. In Mumbai as well, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in September this year, conducted several raids that revealed the rampant and irresponsible use (read: abuse) of antibiotics in the city. While antibiotics certainly help to treat deadly illnesses, an overuse not only results in the birth of super bacteria, it also destroys the bacteria that is essential for our body — which can have severe health consequences in the long run.
Social media was under scrutiny again No, not from security agencies! This time, it’s health news, because psychologists, scientists, researchers and doctors were paying more attention to social media and technology trends. Over the last twelve months, several studies have been published about the effects of social media on our health, both mental as well as physical. From making you believe in misconceptions, promoting dangerous remedies and resulting in physical problems such as back and neck pain, to social media websites increasing feelings of jealousy and

f you’re the sort of person who checks their email more than three times a day, you should be paying attention to this article. Frequently checking your email and replying to each mail as soon as you get a notification can raise your stress levels. How do we know this? Well, researchers from the University of British Columbia conducted a study involving 124 professionals, where, for one week, participants were either instructed to limit
how often they checked their email to three times a day, or told to check their email as often as they could, which turned out to be roughly the same number of times that they normally checked their email. The instructions were reversed after a week. The participants were also made to answer daily surveys regarding their stress levels. At the end of the study, researchers concluded that people who checked their email less were far less stressed, as
compared to participants who checked their email too often. So, if you feel like things are getting a little too much and you want to keep stress levels low, we suggest you check your mail as little as possible. Once you’ve left work, check your email only once before heading to bed. If something very urgent comes up, we’re sure you will receive a call. Try it out for a few days and see whether you notice the difference!

While wearing braces is essential to realign your teeth, your responsibility doesn’t end there. In fact, taking care of your teeth becomes even more crucial when you wear braces. Shirley Mistry speaks to Dr. Shantanu Jaradi, aesthetic dentist at Dentzz Dental Care to bring you some tips
W
dear Barbara, I’ve been using a specific brand of moisturiser since I was 15-years-old and have noticed that the effects last for a shorter period during the colder months. I think I may have to switch to another moisturiser. Could you suggest a solution that won’t include me having to part with my favourite product? Maybe a few tips and tricks to make the effects last longer? — sneha manek, Vasai dear sneha, We understand the pain of parting with a beauty staple that has worked wonders for your skin in the past. But, you need to realise that as you age, your skincare routine requires an upgrade. The amount of moisture present in your skin depletes as you grow older and the cold winter air adds to the problem, further dehydrating your skin. If you must, change to a heavy-duty moisturiser during the winter, but apply your regular moisturiser for the rest of the year. Try a few of other moisturisers and see which one works best for your skin. You might find a new favourite. dear Barbara, I recently got blonde and caramel highlights in my hair, which looked amazing after a hair wash and blow dry. It’s been two weeks since I coloured my hair and I’ve noticed that the texture has gone from smooth and glossy, to stiff and dry. At first, I thought that it was because of the cold, dry air. But, even though I oil my hair regularly, my hair goes back to being dry. What do you think is causing this and what can I do get my glossy tresses back? — mahika Khurana, Bandra dear mahika, Hair colouring treatments use bleach to neutralise your hair’s natural colour. Doing this allows for the artificial colour to settle into your strands, but at a cost. It forms abrasions in your hair’s structure that make it dry, brittle and damaged. What you can do is oil your hair regularly and deep condition it with hydrating masks and conditioners. There is no quick remedy for your problem, but the health of your hair will improve over time. Remember to avoid getting any more treatments for the time being, and refrain from using heat-based styling tools.
hile diligently brushing your teeth twice a day seems like a good way to maintain oral hygiene, wearing braces makes this otherwise effective process, insufficient. Braces make your teeth prone to problems such as gingivitis, tartar and demineralisation, simply by sitting on your teeth. These problems are unpleasant, painful and when left untreated, can turn into more serious dental problems, which may require your dentist to remove your braces, wait for your gums to heal completely before replacing them. Dr. Shantanu Jardi, aesthetic dentist at Dentzz Dental Care tells us, “Caring for your teeth can be a challenge when you wear braces. It is important that you focus on oral hygiene and learn about different dental issues that you might suffer from. Food and plaque can get trapped in the space between braces and their wires, causing decay and enamel stains.”
What should you do? Dr. Shantanu explains that food can mix with bacteria
present in your mouth and the metal in the braces to produce a bleaching effect, which can cause small, permanent spots on your teeth. “It is best to brush (or at the very least, rinse your mouth with water) after every meal, and use dental floss or special orthodontic floss at least once a day to clean the spaces between your braces and under the wires,” Dr. Shantanu adds. He also explains that avoiding sweets, soda and other sugary and starchy food will
benefit you as their consumption promotes tooth decay and gum disease. He also tells us that sticky, chewy foods such as caramel, chewing gum and dried fruits can stick to your braces and are very difficult to remove. Taking good care of your braces is essential if you want to avoid complications while they’re on and want to ensure that you have great-looking teeth once they’re off. “No matter how much money, pain and time you’ve already invested in your braces, proper oral care is still the key to walking away with a set of beautiful, healthy teeth,” Dr. Shantanu adds.
Keep in mind Take a look at this simple guide to ensure that you’re practising good oral care habits. n The biggest advancement in oral health has been fluoride, which strengthens enamel, making your teeth less likely to decay. Several toothpastes and mouth rinses also contain fluoride, so pick one that contains it. n Always brush thoroughly after every meal — bits of food can get caught in your teeth and your braces, and develop plaque over time. If you can’t brush after every meal, at least remember to rinse your mouth well. n If you have elastic bands or headgear holding your braces in place, remove them before brushing your teeth. n Avoid hard foods such as chips, nuts, popcorn, pretzels and candy, as well as food items that have a gooey, fudgy consistency.

RINAGAR: As suspense over government formation in Jammu & Kashmir continued, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday said the idea of a grand alliance with National Conference (NC) and Congress was an option for forming a stable government in the state. "A grand alliance with PDP, National Conference and Congress as partners is also an option," PDP spokesman Naeem Akhtar told PTI. Akhtar said it was one of the options that can be explored to form a stable government in the state and also fulfil the aspirations of all the regions of the state. The idea of such an alliance was mooted by senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad. PDP has emerged as the single largest party with 28 seats in the 87member Assembly followed closely by BJP with 25 seats while NC
bagged 15. While Congress won 12 seats, smaller parties and independents got seven seats. No political party has been able to yet muster the support of 44 MLAs required to form the government in the state. Congress, NC and several independents have offered support to the PDP for government formation. Meanwhile, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti is slated to meet Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra on Wednesday for discussing government-formation. PDP has asked its newly-elected MLAs to go back to their constituencies for getting feedback on such a possibility. In the midst of these deliberations, NC chief Farooq Abdullah and Omar yesterday issued a gag order to the party leaders asking them to desist from speaking to the media over policy issues.
Mehbooba to meet J&K Guv tomorrow

‘Bangalore blast a terror attack’ N
EW DELHI: Terming the Bangalore blast as a 'terror attack', the Centre on Monday said the case could be handed over to the NIA and asked Karnataka government to beef up security by increasing CCTV surveillance in the IT city. Emerging from a high-level security review meeting, a day after the low intensity blast in Bangalore left a woman dead, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said an idea about the nature of the blast and who could be behind it could be ascertained only after a proper probe. One woman was killed and three persons were injured when a lowintensity bomb exploded outside a restaurant on Sunday night. Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said, "It was a terror attack." He said investigators were trying to piece together the leads and efforts were on to find out the people behind the blast. HMEDABAD/AGRA: In an escalation of protests against Aamir Khan blockbuster 'PK', Bajrang Dal activists yesterday vandalised theatres in Gujarat exhibiting the film for making ‘fun’ of Hindu Gods and godmen and warned that its screening be stopped. Besides Gujarat, the right wing activists also staged protests in Agra and Mau in Uttar Pradesh and Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh and tore posters of the film. There were reports that one theatre in south Mumbai's Parel had stopped screening of the film. Violent protests were held in Ahmedabad and in other parts of Gujarat and the activists compelled at least two theatres to stop the screening of the film that has grossed over Rs 200 crore in Indian box office in the first 10 days since its release on December 19. Angry at the theatre owners ignoring the 'diktat' not to screen the movie that has raised the hackles of a plethora of Hindu organisations, volunteers of the Bajrang Dal outfit descended on City Gold Multiplex and Shiv theatre on Ashram Road in Ahmedabd, smashing glass panes at ticket windows.

Dubai Shopping Over 1,000 Entities Under Scanner As Sebi Widens Probe Festival Woos Indians
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2014
NEWS FLASH
2014: Private equity players seal over $11 bn deals in India Corporates raised Rs 39,000 cr via equity markets in 2014; QIPs dominated Rashtriya Ispat Nigam gets Sebi's nod for IPO Oil firms float tender for 97 cr litres of ethanol India's oil consumption rises 4.9% in November Govt sets up joint task force to boost mobile manufacturing.
Besides, being possible cases of money laundering or tax evasion, Sebi has found that such entities may be involved in securities market frauds as well, as they involve manipulative transactions in securities and misuse of the market By A Business Reporter
A
t least 1,000 individuals and companies have come under markets regulator Sebi's scanner for allegedly using stock markets to evade taxes and launder money through companies mostly existing on paper. Sebi is focusing on securities market related violations by these individuals and companies, who have used trading in at least 25 listed companies to evade taxes and convert black money into 'legitimate-looking' funds, by creating fictitious gains or losses in the stock market. The regulator is also looking into the use of derivatives trading by such entities, while it has asked other agencies including Income Tax Department, Enforcement Directorate and Financial Intelligence
Unit to further investigate the cases of tax evasion and money laundering, sources said. While investigation has reached advanced levels in the case of trading in these 25 listed companies, whose shares had shown extreme gains without any fundamental reasons, the regulator may also expand the scope of its probe and the number of such entities could grow much higher. A large number of over 1,000 entities -- currently under scanner, which include individuals and 'shell' companies created by them, are actually related to those already facing action by Sebi or other regulators including in some major scams that have come to the fore in the recent past. These include entities related to 'cash for loan' scam, being investigated by CBI, as also the NSEL default case that is being probed by multiple regulators and agencies, sources said. Some of them could be top executives and promoters of various other listed companies. These entities have facilitated illicit transactions worth thousands of crores of rupees over the past 2-3 years. It has emerged during initial investigations by Sebi and stock exchanges that such illicit activities tend to accelerate during last few months of a fiscal and quantum of such transactions has grown manifold in the last few years. Besides, a number of such entities have been found to be repeat offenders for various offences in the securi-
ties market and many of them create new shell companies to hide their past precedents, sources said. While it may be difficult to quantify the entire value of black money laundered through stock markets, as also the total tax amounts evaded through this platform, sources said that the total figure may easily run into thousands of crores of rupees given the spread of such illicit activities. In just two cases, where Sebi earlier this month passed interim orders, total illicit gains estimated worth Rs 500 crore have come to the fore in case of a select few entities. Besides, being possible cases of money laundering or tax evasion, Sebi has found such activities to be securities market frauds as well, as they involve manipulative transactions in securities and misuse of the market. In its biggest-ever crackdown for suspected tax evasion and laundering of black money through stock trading platforms, Sebi earlier this month barred 260 entities, including individuals and companies, from the securities markets. While Sebi would further probe these cases, it has referred the matter to the Income Tax Department, Enforcement Directorate, Financial Intelligence Unit, among other agencies, for necessary actions on their part. While 152 entities have been barred in one case relating to an entity named First Financial Services Ltd, another 108 entities have faced the action in a case related to Radford Global Limited.

will now begin to feel more optimistic when they receive fresh inquiries for business that will get concluded profitably. Independent entrepreneurs will make progress whereas those in partnerships or joint ventures may have to terminate their associations before making any headway in their career. The employed will see several changes happening in their work both within their organizations to resulting in their moving to another company. Those who may have lost their jobs and are seeking fresh offers may have to wait a little longer before they get anything worth their while. It will be in their interest to accept anything that comes along especially around middle of the year else they may not find any job for a long time. Home and family life may have gone through a major upheaval and now the time has come for some sort of settlement. The married going through problems and living separately for some time will now resolve their differences and start living together again. This will bring great relief to the elders in the family and you can look forward to a happy and joyful atmosphere at home. Youngsters will get romantically involved and if eligible marriage is likely towards the end of the year. Students will have a rewarding year and they will excel in their studies. Those appearing for competitive exams will get through with distinction and begin their higher studies in earnest. And if you are completing your education this year you can expect campus placement in an organization of repute. Sports persons will have to put in extra effort to remain in competition and with sustained effort in training they can look forward to fresh laurels on national or international levels. Health will be good. Those who may have had some form of surgery will recover to normal health. Young women may need some medical advice on gynecological issues and related to lower abdomen. Elders suffering from diabetes will have to keep monitoring their sugar levels for there can be some complications towards the end of the year. Overall the year is rewarding and you will remain in high spirits full of enthusiasm.

facing frequent delays and setbacks in business will find most old clients and work proposals getting revived. You will have enough work to keep you profitably busy most of the year. Make sure you accept only firm offers where substantial amount is paid in advance. This is especially for those having manufacturing units where in the past you may have invested heavily only to later find your contracts getting cancelled. The employed will feel confident of their progress in their current organization and they must continue to work sincerely even if no immediate incentives are proposed. A major promotion to higher post with sizeable increase in salary is likely later in the year. Personal life is peaceful though the married may find romance and excitement missing in their relationship. This may be more due to their busy work schedules and frequent travels on work. There could be minor problems when a proposed summer holiday gets cancelled due to some urgent work or having to attend a business seminar important to your organization. Youngsters will remain busy getting settled in their career and may not find time for social activities. They will miss romantic companion in their lives due to lack of time for social interactions. Long working hours that they are required to put in, sometimes even during the weekends will be rather tiring for indulging in leisurely pursuits. Seniors will enjoy a more relaxed life and will plan having a holiday home in their favorite town or city. Students will do well and those doing specialization will successfully complete their education. Those studying any branch of medicine, engineering or accounts will begin their career with institutes of repute. Sports persons will have to work hard at their training for they may find lacking in form for competitive games. Some may even consider retiring from competitions and find suitable employment. Yourhealthwillbegenerallygoodandyoungsterswillfind themselves fit and sprightly. Young women may need some medical advice due to minor abdominal complaints. Most of you that are regular with their exercise regimen will feel healthy and fit and remain in shape. You must take special care of skin when outdoors for some of you may develop skin allergies. Elders will keep good health and must continue doing mild exercise and eating nutritious food.
for execution early in the year will get postponed. Business people must be wary of making large investments during the earlier part of the year and wait until middle of the year when matters will begin to look more positive. Joint ventures and partnerships must be avoided for these will not last long and result in setback. If working in a joint family enterprise this will now be heading for a split or division. Those in trading and in exports and imports will do well and expand their sphere of influence. The employed will do better and make further progress in their career. A change of job is likely this year that will result in substantial monetary gain and getting an independent charge in your field of specialization. Home and family life will be fine though love and marital relationships will occasionally result in angry outbursts due to misunderstanding created by acquaintance or a colleague. If you have no trust in your partner and constantly disagree on personal matters then you could create a wedge between the two that will eventually lead to separation. It is in your own interest to spend more time in mending your difference and resolving the issues where you are more to blame. Youngsters will have a good social life but no significant romantic relationship that they will miss more when they see most of their friends having exciting love life. Students will have a successful year and they will excel in their exams. Those completing their basic education will opt for higher studies with preference to study science or medicine. Sports persons will have to work harder to make a mark in their field and those already established must continue their grueling workouts if they wish to remain in competitive games. However you must be careful while training for a minor mishap could put you out of circulation for a brief period. Your health is fine though you will need to take care of your diet and life style. Women, and even young girls, may have some abdominal problems that they must not neglect for it could later affect when planning to have a child. Overall the year is good because finally you will end the year on a celebratory note.

Business people dealing with overseas trade will expand their work and some of you will set up operations in a foreign country to facilitate expansion. Trading activities bring larger gain than production though manufacturing units will also make progress but relatively gradual. Those in chemical, engineering and hospitality industry will see manifold increase in their turnover during the next twelve months. The employed will make substantial progress in their career and those seeking jobs in a foreign country can look forward to offers coming from their present organization to relocate overseas for a couple of years. Family and personal life will be normal though the married will find less time to spend together due to their respective jobs. For no obvious reasons you will get into heated arguments creating unnecessary tensions at home. Sometimes the complaint will be of neglect on your part or spending more time outside home that in any case will be true. You need to be more understanding towards each others responsibilities and try finding time to take brief holidays together. Youngsters will be concentrating on their career that is moving in higher graph and though they will find time to socialize but stay away from any significant romantic commitment. However you will find a person of the opposite sex attracted to you from your social circle of friends and acquaintances. Students will have a successful year and those studying arts, business management and humanities are assured of a successful career ahead. Those studying overseas may not do well and are likely to return without completing their curriculum. Rogers (69 runs, 123 balls, 8 fours) and Shane Watson (17) tried to increase their lead further and they were nearly helped by Shikhar Dhawan, who dropped a tough onehanded chance at second slip, diving in front of R Ashwin (2-21) at first slip. Rogers, who was batting on 33 at that time, was the batsman to benefit against Ishant Sharma (1-38) in that 23rd over of the innings. The breakthrough came two overs later though as Ishant this time had Watson caught behind. Steve Smith (14) came out to bat and took Australia past
the 100-run mark in the 26th over, adding 33 runs for the third wicket. Meanwhile, Rogers went on to score his fourth successive half-century of the series, getting to the mark off 81 balls, in the 28th over. Four overs later his partnership with Smith was broken by Umesh Yadav (1-55) when the young skipper was caught by Ajinkya Rahane as the leg slip finally came into play. With just 20 minutes left in the session, Ashwin returned into the attack and dealt a big blow to Australia, cleaning up Rogers in the 41st over, the batsman looking solid until then.

Kohli-Johnson verbal volleys continue
A day after expressing his displeasure at Australia's on-field banter, India vicecaptain Virat Kohli once again had a go at Mitchell Johnson and apparently said something to the home team's pace spearhead as he was walking off after being dismissed here. The incident transpired in the 68th over of Australia's second innings when Johnson was dismissed by Mohammed Shami following which Kohli was seen speaking to the batsman. In return Johnson also had something to say but it was not clear whether his talk was directed at Kohli or was a complaint to the umpires as the the two onfield officials did have a word with the Indian after that. Australia take 326-run lead as match tilts towards the home side on day four
ELBOURNE: Australia put themselves in a comfortable position by taking an overall lead of 326 runs by the end of the fourth day as the third cricket Test headed for an exciting finish, with India needing to go for a all-out win to keep themselves afloat in the series. India's first innings folded for 465, adding just three runs to their overnight score, with Mitchell Johnson polishing off the tail without much fuss. The hosts then rode on David Warner's pacy 40, Rogers' patient 69 and Shaun Marsh (62 not out) to reach 261-7 at close on a rain-hit fourth day at the MCG, taking an overall lead of 326 with three wickets in hand. With one whole day left, Australia may add a few more runs before declaring the innings and set India a stiff target early tomorrow. India will have to play out of their skin to either win or save the match on a tricky fifth day track. Interestingly, England is the only team to have successfully chased down a total of 300 plus on the fourth innings at MCG. They had made 332 for seven way back in 1929. At stumps, Shaun

ELBOURNE: Australia have already stretched the overall lead to 326, but unfazed Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin said that the team's dressing room atmosphere is positive even though a chase could be tricky on the final day of the third cricket Test at MCG. Despite the Indian bowlers working hard to improve the visitors' chances of a win, Australia finished Day 4 on 261 for seven with Shaun March (62 no out) and Ryan Harris (8 not out) still fighting on. "We exactly don't know where this match is headed, but we are in very positive frame of mind. You never know, maybe tomorrow morning we can get them out early or they can set a target for us. We are positive and we will take it as it goes and see what happens," said Ashwin in the post-day
presser. "Any score on the final day is going to be tricky. It's a Test match and it tests every aspect of your game and attitude. It is going to be tough but we are up for it. We are here to win games and we will be positive and see where we can go," he added. The Indian attack improved on their performance from the first innings and did not let Australia run away in their second essay, getting wickets at regular intervals. Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Ashwin shared two wickets apiece but the Australian lower-order once again resisted. "Ishant bowled really well today. He did really well after the first innings wherein he also bowled well. But particularly today, after the rain break, he bowled three spells and he was bang on with all of them.

ELBOURNE: Unfazed by Virat Kohli's aggressive body language on the field and no-holds-barred criticism off it, Australian opener DavidWarner said the Indian is free to play the way he wishes and the ICC is there to manage if anybody crosses the line. Australia have the upperhand in the ongoing third Test, having accumulated a 326-run lead at the end of the fourth day. Tempers are also rising with Kohli taking on the Aussies with his own brand of aggression, going to the extent of stating that he only respect some of the home players after a showdown with Mitchell Johnson on more than one occasion. Even Monday, Johnson was given quite a sendoff by the Indian players after being dismissed. "I didn't see what

OLKATA: Mumbai pacer Shradul Thakur's third successive five-wicket haul left hosts Bengal staring at another humiliating defeat at home in their Ranji Trophy cricket Group A fixture at Eden Gardens. Fresh from his nine-wicket match haul in their win against UP, Thakur (5/37) triggered the collapse as Bengal, despite playing with eight batsmen, found themselves in tatters at 130 for six on day two, still trailing by 284 with four wickets in hands, to Mumbai's first innings total of 414. Bengal still require 135 runs to avoid a repeat of follow on for second successive match, as Mumbai will now press for a bonus point win. Amid the ruins, Manoj Tiwary stood tall with a well-made 63 off 78 balls with 40 runs coming in boundaries as his elegant stroke-making was the only bright spot in an otherwise Bengal's gloomy day. Having begun with three consecutive boundaries, Tiwary completed his 50 from 64 balls with the team on 66 for four that summed up Bengal's batting plight. But Thakur produced the gem of a delivery to dismiss Tiwary, who was beaten by the pace and bounce to take a thin inside edge behind stumps as Bengal's batting crumbled once again. Thakur then castled Shukla (11) for his fourth fivewicket haul and third in three

SPORTS T

2014: Coaches had a rough time and no smooth sailing ahead
he year 2014 was particularly rough on coaches of various teams. The coaches also saw them having run-ins with their sports federations during their tenure. Some of them were forced to bid good-bye midway through their tenure, while few survived the shaky sojourn. While cricket as usual was always in the spotlight, it was sports like boxing, national sport - hockey and football, which came under the scanner for all the wrong reasons. While the fiasco at the Asian Games brought pugilist Sarita Devi's downfall and with that a ban for a year, it was her coaches too, who faced the AIBA ban. Two other sports - hockey and football brought the muck-sledging out in the open. With hockey coach Terry Walsh sent packing despite him making rounds of the sports ministry, Hockey India chief Narendra Batra decided that India was in a better position to serve directives rather than be on the receiving end. Walsh’s exit focusses on the shocking treatment on ‘winning’ coaches are subjected to in India. Indian hockey coaches have little to show for in the recent past. It was only under Walsh that India tasted some kind of success unlike his many predecessors especially with the gold medal at the Asiad to his credit. Hence, he demanded an ‘extra’ share of the pie for the success, which he attained during his tenure. The dismal show at the Champions Trophy where India looked lacklustre certainly proved a point that India immediately needs a 'full-timer' and no stop-gap coaches like Roelant Oltmans. Football made huge inroads this year with the Indian Super League hogging the limelight but that didn't highlight the dwindling side of the national team. The All India Football Federation chose to ignore their plummeting FIFA ranking. At 171, the 'coachless' Indian team needs some 'spirit' in the system to

revive rather than being left to die a slow death. The federation seems to be reaping the commercial dividends off the ISL rather than applying a healing touch to a team who is struggling without a guide. What India needs is a world renowned coach who can set a pace and direction to put India securely on the road to recovery. Few names have cropped up, but a decision has not been made formal. The Federation seems to be striking a deal with the tried and tested Cypriot Stephen Constantine to manage the affairs of Indian football. Also, Ashley Westwood's name is doing the rounds but nothing is clear. The cricket team too, had its share of issues with the coaching staff with the Board of Control for Cricket in India [BCCI] sending its support staff packing but chose to retain their 'tactical strategist' coach Duncan Fletcher. His failure with the Indian team is well documented but he has been retained till the end of the cricket World Cup to avoid any shake up right at the eve of the mega event. To keep a close watch on him, the board has appointed a full time director in the form of former skipper Ravi Shastri. With the string of overseas losses, Fletcher would definitely be far from Indian shores post the World Cup. With dwindling fortunes among the 'big three' of Indian sports, one can reflect on the wrong choices and conflicts simply hampering the fortunes of the game. Also, a failed coaching programme will not augur well for the grassroot development and dreaming of getting gold in the hockey event of the Olympics or participating in the 2022 FIFA world cup in Qatar will will only remain a distant dream.
New Zealand cruise past Sri Lanka to cap best ever year C
HRISTCHURCH: New Zealand wrapped up a win against Sri Lanka by eight wickets to cap their most successful year in Test cricket. Set a meagre 105-run target on the fourth day of the first Test in Christchurch,
they took 30.4 overs to complete the victory with Ross Taylor not out 39 and Kane Williamson on 31. It means New Zealand have won five Tests in a calendar year for the first time after enjoying 2014 series wins at home against India
(1-0) and away in the West Indies (2-1). They also drew a series with Pakistan (1-1) in the UAE earlier this month. Although Williamson and Taylor steered New Zealand home, the victory was built on Brendon McCullum's
swashbuckling 195 first innings knock and the lethal swing and seam bowling of Trent Boult and Tim Southee. After Sri Lanka were forced to follow on 303 runs in arrears of New Zealand's 441, they ground out a gritty 407.
