himself thought is too much, but the fear of his seniors meant that he simply could not reduce the figure, and that it had to be realistic. Any lay man can understand that agricultural production is always proportionate to the rain fall. The more rainfall, more harvest. No rain fall, no harvest. However, our revenue officials did not go by this logic. Shiv Sena leaders have forced the government to take a fresh survey and now we learn that Aarewari may decrease. We are still waiting for Aanewari. Just like Lagaan, if the Anewari remains 53 paisa, then my father has to pay proportionate taxes for land, water and electricity which he has not consumed. The rest of the world is talking about Social Security, but spare a thought for the farmers who don’t have any sort of income, yet are taxed for unconsumed commodities. With all these recurring problems, I still am not too sure, that my father will not commit suicide in the near future. I have asked my cousin to hack down the old neem tree in the farm and remove the old ceiling fan which I had brought on my first salary for my aging grandfather. My father is just one of the tens of thousands farmers in Marathwada and other parts of rural Maharashtra!

South Korea erects giant Christmas tree on North Korea border
halt. And for the North Korean regime, this move is sure to bring back memories of the 65-foot tower that the South Koreans had set up in 1971 and later converted into a Christmas tree. The north had claimed that the tower was a “provocative display of psychological warfare.” Practicing religion is not without its risks in the north, and celebrating Christmas can land one in jail, or worse. And the last thing that a North Korean wants is to get caught with leaflets containing Biblical verses, which the south airdrops every now and then, or to be caught admiring a giant Christmas tree on the other side of the border.
Meditation at Brahma Kumari's camp The South Korean Christmas tree erected on the border between the two Koreas.
This Christmas South Korea erected a 30-foot Christmas tree on its border with North Korea, apparently to pray for peace in the region. Starting on December 23, the tree will stay in place for a fortnight, after which it will be dismantled.
While there is no news of any reaction from Pyongyang, there is little doubt that the atheist state will not look too kindly upon this move by its southern neighbour. The two Koreas have been in a state of war since armistice was declared in 1953 to bring the hostilities of the Korean War to a
There are a large number of Brahma Kumaris centres in Mumbai. They do silent work. They hold meetings and meditation camps which are attended by a large number of people. Their aim is to lessen strife in the world and promote serenity. There are teachers who explain to large audiences about matters spiritual and also help one lead a tranquil life. Finally it is all about love and peace.
Anyone can join the institution. At the meditation camps, well qualified yoga teachers explain how meditation helps clear the mind of all unnecessary, troublesome thoughts and attain a state of peace. BK Aspi is one such teacher. He is a simple session teacher. He believes the diseases of mind and body will disappear if one does meditation daily. And then there is Raj Yoga too. It generates peace, prosperity and happiness.
Santa captured on camera
Amidst all the excitement over Santa Claus, we came across the story of seven-year-old Evan who put up a small device to capture what happened in his living room once everyone had gone to sleep on Christmas Eve. The next morning, after presents were opened, he and his family gathered around the computer to see whether Santa Claus had visited – with a second camera recording Evan's face as he watched. A clip of both videos – played alongside each other – was posted online by a member of Evan's family. The video starts with Evan's older brother setting up his GoPro camera in the empty living room. The seven-year-old becomes
increasingly doubtful when nothing appears as the camera speeds through hours of footage from the room. One family member suggests that perhaps the camera didn't capture anything, while another says that Santa Claus needs to be sure that everyone is asleep. But then Evan hears the distant jingle of bells and stomp of reindeer hooves. He looks around excitedly and claps his hands – in disbelief that Father Christmas is so close. And just as his family start saying that maybe it was only sound that was captured, the man in the red suit appears in a burst of magical smoke. Evan squeals with delight as he watches Santa enjoying the milk and cookies left out for him. Santa then turns towards the Christmas tree and snaps his fingers – making an impressive pile of perfectly-wrapped presents appear in a cloud of sparkle. Just after Evan remarks that Santa Claus hasn't noticed the camera, the man turns to face the camera, snaps his fingers, and the screen goes dark. The seven-year-old can hardly contain his glee – high-fiving his family and talking excitedly about what he just saw. He adds that he hopes Santa doesn't put them on the naughty list for filming him.

The CBI had charged Amit Shah, currently the BJP party president, and 37 others, including several police officers, in the two cases of alleged fake encounters in which gangster Sohrabuddin, who was claimed to have links to Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, and his wife Kauser Bi, were reportedly abducted by Gujarat's anti-terrorism squad and killed near Gandhinagar in November 2005. he commuters using the Central Railway services will have to finish their New Year celebrations by 1 am or be stranded on the platforms for there will be only four trains available on the long line. However the Western Railway has decided to operate eight special trains after midnight in order to allow seamless travel for commuters who will be out celebrating. The commuters on the Central Railway are not happy as those planning to celebrate around the Gateway Of India, Marine Drive and other locations will now have to wrap up their celebrations early. The ADC interacted with a few disheartened commuters. Nikkita Pardeshi (26), a social media executive, said, “My office in Marine Drive has organised a midnight party for the which will end at 3 am. But now that there will be no train after 1.30 am, and I stay in Thane, I will have to rush back home as I cannot take a cab at that time. It is new years there should have been more trains operating.” Sachin Yadav (20), a student, said, “My family had planned to go to Gateway Of India at 12 am and then go
around to the Taj Hotel and also to Nariman Point. But after hearing that the last train leaves at 1.30 am, and that it will go only till Kalyan, I guess we will have to change our decision and stay indoors as I stay in Titwala and will have to wait till 4.00 am for the trains to start running again.” Shakshi Singh (26), said,
Sanghtana (SSS), Rashtriya Samaj Party (RSP) and Shivsangram. As the BJP kept all the allies at bay after coming to power, all the constituents created a hue and cry. All four parties are insisting for their share in power. To control the growing resentment, the CM took a decision to expand the cabinet. Meanwhile, Chandrakant Patil also announced that the state government will act against sugar factories which fail to make payment to sugarcane growers as per the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) fixed by the government. Action will also be taken against sugar mills starting crushing season without obtaining necessary approvals, he informed.

n an attempt to pacify the furious constituents of Mahayuti, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has decided to expanded his twomonth old cabinet very shortly. The CM is considering inducting 12 more ministers in his cabinet. This was announced by Cooperation Minister Chandrakant Patil yesterday. He said, “Of the 12, six will be from BJP, two from Shiv Sena and four from other allies. However, Patil declined to disclose the date of expansion.” Fadnavis and nine others had taken oath on October 31, after BJP with 122 MLAs

Meanwhile, Sohrabuddin's family has said that they will move the high court against the verdict. During the hearing, CBI counsel SV Raju told the court that the agency was directed to carry out investigations into the Sohrabuddin encounter case in 2010, five years after the alleged incident. Raju said if the accused gives an explanation over the charges against him and if two views are possible in a case, he can be discharged. Defence advocate Mitesh Amin said there was no direct evidence against him whatsoever. He claimed that there was no proof to show that Amit Shah met any co-accused or that he telephoned those police officers accused in the case. Amit Shah's counsel argued that CBI has not denied that as home minister Shah would call police officers on the field as was his practice. But they relied on call data records of only the time frame when the alleged encounters took place in 2005 and 2006 and not before and after, which would show that he telephoned not just the alleged accused police officers but others too.One of the allegations in the case against Shah is that these calls indicate that he had a role in the conspiracy to carry out a fake encounter with Sohrabuddin Shaikh.

There has been a spike in the number of adolescents hooked to a drug called ‘Meow Meow’ or M-CAT, a name for mephedrone which is a powerful recreational drug By A Staff Reporter
W
hile measures to curb substance abuse are finally being thought of by the state government, doctors across the city are worried about a spike in the number of adolescents who are hooked on to the newbie on the drug front: 'Meow Meow'. “Currently, there are 2,00,000 people using Meow Meow in the country and 30,000 in the city. After the New year, these numbers will simply double or even triple because this drug is a party drug. It gives you all the energy, euphoria, enthusiasm and confidence that you need while partying. It is a
scary thought but not far from truth, said Dr Yusuf Merchant, President, Drug Abuse Information, Rehabilitation and Research Centre (DAIRRC). Meow Meow or M-CAT is another name for mephedrone, a powerful recreational drug that is taken to experience effects similar to amphetamines and ecstasy and is a rage among adolescents in the age group of 14 to 19. Here is the story of a 14year-old boy from Mumbai who got addicted to this drug and almost ended up wrecking his life.
EFFECTS ON MEPHEDRONE: Increased energy Self-confidence Talkativeness Euphoria Mental and physical stimulation Enhanced sense of touch and empathy A bit of sensory distortion Frequently craving for more of the drug SIDE EFFECTS OF MEPHEDRONE: Loss of appetite Muscle clenching and tremors Headache
Anxiety Increased blood pressure Chest pain Fast/irregular heartbeat, Difficulty in urinating, Changes in body temperature Blue/cold fingers While Meow Meow shows no presence in the body after four to five hours and hence even a blood or urine test will not help detection, the person emitting a foul odour of rotting vegetables or cat urine or frequent bleeding from the nose, are clear indications of Meow Meow being at play.

This 14-year-old boy from a well-to-do family in south Mumbai got introduced to Meow Meow around two months ago through a known source. What made him try out this new drug was its effect of enhancing sexual prowess and urge. Already being into pornography, this reason made him try this drug and before long, he had become an addict. The low phase one experiences after taking Meow Meow makes one irritable, aggressive and anti-social. This boy thus became a complete loner in no time. Within a month, he was left with just one friend. Some time ago, he and his only friend holed themselves up in the boy's room and consumed 75 g of Meow Meow in three days. The result being seven sleepless nights and bleeding from the nose (the very indicative sign of Meow Meow consumption) along with other behavioural changes. This caught the attention of this boy's parents who then brought him to Dr Merchant. “I was shocked to see a 14year-old child in such a state. I am used to handling similar cases but they were all
07
around 19 years old. I heard the case and referred the child to another psychiatrist for treatment as I am not equipped to deal with cases of such small children. I think the child is getting treatment and is under strict vigilance of his parents, said Dr Merchant. “The cases of ones in the age bracket of 14 to 16 is more and the ratio of addiction to this drug is one girl for three boys, he continued. “The reason for this is that it is cheap, easily available online and as of now, is not under the Narcotics, Drugs and Psychotropic Substance (NDPS) Act, 1958 and so is legal. But the harmful effects that this drug has on one's mind and body are scary, to say the least, he added. Dr Merchant has filed a Public Interest Litigation as well for Meow Meow to be covered under the NDPS Act and is waiting to be given a date for hearing. But his concern is that by the time the PIL is heard and the needful is done by the concerned authorities, a large chunk of the youth in the city as well the country would have fallen prey to this addiction.

he state government is in the process of drafting a comprehensive integrated energy policy to cover solar, wind and other new renewable non-conventional energy sources, stated Minister for Energy Chandrashekhar Bawankule. Speaking to newspersons at his Mantralaya office, he said that 12 prominent experts from the field of energy that includes nuclear scientist Dr Anil Kakodkar, Prashant Godbole, Arvind Karandikar and others were to draft the policy. The draft policy will be uploaded on the government website on January 10 to invite suggestions from the people. He added that with stocks of
natural resources like coal getting depleted and costly the government will have to shift Chandrashekhar to renewable Bawankule and new sources of non-conventional energy to meet the energy requirements. Bawankule stated that sources like solar energy are available during day time in abundance. He said that if government offices, government undertakings, educational institutions start using solar energy it will greatly reduce the burden on conventional energy. This will help in providing more electricity to agriculture and industries.

s the New Year approaches the Mumbai Police are gearing up to manage the croweded streets, heavy traffic and above all, the people’s safety. This year the burden on the city’s police force will be eased as the Maharashtra Shiv Vahtuksena, the transport union arm of the Shiv Sena, has decided to help in ensuring the safety of the people on the streets. The Maharashtra Shiv Vahtuksena president, Haji Arafat Shaikh, has come up with this idea to help the cops in increasing vigilance in the city. Under this initiative, members of body will be helping the police in the surveillance at prime locations. “Every year during Christmas and New Year celebrations, we discover many cases of accidents, specially drunken driving which lead to many hit
and run cases. While the efficient police force is always there to monitor such incidences, we have decided to extend additional help to them,” Haji Arafat Shaikh said. “Our mission is to ensure a safe, secure and accident-free festive season. When any road accident happens, normally autorickshaw or taxi drivers are reluctant to help the victims. We wish that no such incidents happen this time around, but in case of any casualty, we will help out. We are encouraging rickshaw and taxi drivers to help those victims by taking them to nearby hospitals, so that they can get immediate treatment. Our union will reimburse the auto or taxi fare in such cases.” Vice president of this wing, Sharif Deshmukh, said, “We are happy to help the Mumbai Police and look forward to a safe and secure December 31.”

Withdraw film or make changes E
VEN the producer of a top-class film has to resort to many and various methods to make it a box-office hit. During the past few years, we have seen various ways of promotion of a film being tried out with a view to attracting cinegoers’ attention. This is part of Bollywood business and hence viewed as the done thing. All over the country, a film which was released recently has got huge attention. The producer of the film did not have to incur any expense on publicity. He has got it all for free. The film PK has raised a storm: It is said to have objectionable observations against the Hindu community. Swami Ramdev has said that the film should be withdrawn because it hurts anti-Hindu sentiments. It is a fact, he says, there are bogus babus and swamis, but the Amir Khan’s PK hurts the sentiments of Hindus. It is evident that a large number of Hindus want the film to be withdrawn. The Bajrang Dal, a Hindu organisation, is leading the attack against the film. Demonstrations, some of them violent, have been held wherever the film has been released. It is certain that theatres where the film is released will be attacked by Hindu groups. The best and wise thing that the producer can do is to delete all objectionable scenes and words and make a new version which will be approved by the anti-PK groups.

O
F all the permutations and combinations that flow from the fractured verdict in Jammu & Kashmir, the only one that makes sense is a Peoples Democratic Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party (PDPBJP) coalition in government in Srinagar. There are several reasons why an alliance between two parties with diametrically opposing views on several contentious issues should be the preferred choice in the prevailing circumstances. The most obvious is arithmetic. Together, they have a total of 53 MLAs in an assembly of 87. The numbers hold out the promise of a strong, stable government. But more than arithmetic, a PDP-BJP alliance is the only starting point for a much needed healing process. The 2014 assembly election has left this sensitive border state ruptured and divided like never before. It is polarized both on regional and communal lines with Jammu pitted against Kashmir and Hindus against Muslims. The rift is not only disturbing, it is dangerous as well. And the PDP, with its strong presence in the Valley, and the BJP, which now dominates Jammu, must work together to bridge the chasm that yawns. It would seem that both parties understand the enormity of the situation. Back channel talks between their interlocutors continue even as vested interests in the Congress and National Conference (NC) attempt to stir the pot. But the responsibility of retrieving the state from the brink lies with Narendra Modi more than it does with Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and his PDP. Kashmiris still remember and talk of the legacy Vajpayee left behind when he facilitated the formation of a PDP-Congress coalition government in 2002 and opened a new chapter in relations with Pakistan. Vajpayee and Mufti worked together to give Kashmir a semblance of peace and normalcy which lasted till the Congress made the fatal mistake of insisting that the PDP honour its commitment to hand over the chief minister’s post to Ghulam Nabi Azad. From then on, it was downhill as tensions rose to culminate in a frenzy of violence that saw young children resort to mass stone-pelting in 2010. The point is that Vajpayee had the wisdom and sagacity to rise above petty partisan interests to weave a grander narrative for the troubled border state. He understood that peace and development in J&K were inextricably tied up with India-Pakistan relations and he was big enough to make the first move with a speech extending the 'hand of friendship’ to

Islamabad six months after Mufti was sworn in a CM. Interestingly, he delivered the speech at the same stadium where Modi addressed his first and only election rally in Srinagar. Today, Modi stands at a similar juncture in history. He can choose to don the Vajpayee mantle and rise above his party’s Jammu-centric politics to play the statesman in the larger interests of the state and the country. Or he can remain just a BJP leader and lose out on a historic opportunity. The ball is in his court.

There was no political talk but observers say that the ice has been broken. Mamata told Modi that she would meet him soon and he replied that she would be most welcome. This was a significant exchange because Mamata is probably the only chief minister who has not called on Modi after he became Prime Minister. Relations between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP are quite strained with the CBI closing in on Mamata’s ministers and MLAs in the Saradha scam investigations. And in the Winter Session of Parliament, the Trinamool Congress led the charge to derail the
‘Happiness is all in the body’
Vedanta shows that everything that is joyful in this life is but a particle of that real joy, because that is the only joy there is. Every moment we are enjoying the absolute bliss, though covered up, misunderstood and caricatured. Wherever there is any blessing, blissfulness, or joy, even the joy of the thief in stealing, it is that Absolute Bliss coming out, only it has become obscured, muddled up, as it were, with all sorts of extraneous conditions, and misunderstood. We have seen how happiness is either in the body or in the mind, or in the Atman. With animals, and in the lowest of human beings, who are very much like animals, happiness is all in the body. No man can eat with the same pleasure as a famished dog, or a wolf; so, in the dog and the wolf the happiness is entirely in the body. In men we find a higher plane of happiness, that of thought, and in the Jnani there is the highest plane of happiness in the Self, the Atman. So to the philosopher this knowledge of the Self is of the highest utility,

because it gives him the highest happiness possible. Sense gratification or physical things cannot be of the highest utility to him, because he does not find in them the same pleasure that he finds in knowledge itself; and after all, knowledge is the one goal, and is really the highest happiness we know.
MATTER & SPIRIT The miseries of the world cannot be cured by physical help only. Until man's nature changes, these physical needs will arise, and miseries will always be felt, and no amount of physical help will cure them completely. The only solution to this problem is to make mankind pure. Ignorance is the mother of all the evil and all the misery we see. Let men have light, let them be pure and spiritually strong and educated, then alone will misery cease in the world, not before. Man thinks foolishly that he can make him-
T
HE big question in Congress circles is whether Rajya Sabha MP and Leader of Opposition in the Upper House Ghulam Nabi Azad has saved his Rajya Sabha seat with the 12 seats his party won in the recent J&K assembly polls. Azad’s RS term ends in March next year and Sonia Gandhi had told him that he will be renominated only if the Congress wins enough seats in the J&K assembly to get him re-elected. Despite predictions of a wipe out, the Congress managed to win 12 seats in the recent assembly polls in the state. This is 8 seats short of the number needed to claim one RS seat. But the way politics is taking shape in the state, Azad may just get lucky with a little help from the PDP and NC. Azad has been aware of the burgeoning ambitions of his deputy in the RS, Anand Sharma, who has been holding fort while Azad was away in J&K campaigning. Sharma is the frontrunner to take over from Azad should he fail to be re-elected to the Upper House. It is interesting that as soon as campaign ended, Azad rushed to Delhi to make a stirring speech on the conversion issue in the Rajya Sabha. Many saw it as his way of staking claim to retain his position as Leader of Opposition in the Upper House. self happy, and after years of struggle finds out at last that true happiness consists in killing selfishness and that no one can make him happy except himself. So long as there is desire no real happiness can come. It is only the contemplative, witnesslike study of objects that brings to us real enjoyment and happiness. The animal has its happiness in the senses, the man in his intellect, and the god in spiritual contemplation. It is only to the soul that has attained to this contemplative state that the world really becomes beautiful. To him who desires nothing, and does not mix himself up with them, the manifold changes of nature are one panorama of beauty and sublimity. After every happiness comes misery; they may be far apart or near. The more advanced the soul, the more quickly does one follow the other. What we want is neither happiness nor misery. Both make us forget our true nature; both are chains, one iron, one gold; behind both is the Atman, who knows neither happiness nor misery. — Swami Vivekananda

NEW Year is celebrated by different communities at different times of the year. In Maharashtra it is celebrated on the first day of Chaitra. The day is called ‘Gudi Padva’. Tamilians celebrate their New Year on April 13 in a festival called ‘Vashaparapu’. Christians celebrate their New Year on January 1. On New Year’s Eve, a dummy of an old man is made, which signifies all that should be put away. The old man is kept on the road or in by lanes, and passers-by drop coins into the money box that is kept beside him. The dummy of the old man is then set on fire at midnight sharp. The burning of the old man marks the end of the old year and the start of a New Year. The New Year is also a time for reflection. One hopes that the New Year turns out to be a more peaceful one than the previous year that saw several tragedies and hundreds of lives lost.

IT’S very disturbing to note that once again the anti-people bank employees will go on strike, though they get the heftiest salaries, bonus and a number of other financial benefits. Their plan is to start their nationwide strike first on January 7 and then from January 21 to 24. The next day, January 25, is a Sunday and January 26 is Republic Day. And then they will go on an indefinite strike with effect from March 16 if there is no settlement between The Indian Banks Association and the striking 'union'. All these strikes are meant to reduce working hours or raise salaries, bonus etc, five-dayweek and immediate new recruitments. We Indians are very lucky that not a single bank employee is in the Indian Army or BSF, and thus on our borders against Pakistan or China for our safety and all round security round the year. — Hansraj Bhat, Borivali

AS a Mumbaikar my resolution is to ensure that everyone, particularly women, is allowed to step into the New Year safely and happily. One has to stress on women because every year, unfortunately, we read about incidents of sexual molestation and rape. Usually these are accounts of women being groped by revellers who molest them, taking advantage of crowds. Today sexual violence against women is on the radar with the country shamed by the number of rapes and molestation cases reported. It is time the tide turns, people become respectable and responsible and Mumbai reclaims its reputation as one of the safest cities for women in India. The establishment must see that the women are safe and free. With the number of ongoing campaigns against rape and the molestation, let every body do their best to ensure that there is safety and security for women in 2015 as they have the right to live a decent life. — Bhagwan Thadani, via email
nuclear deal with the Americans. Added to this was the lack of competent leadership that could sustain its electoral gains and project its good work favourably. This weakness was exploited to the hilt by the Sangh Pramukh which cleverly deployed all its 40,000 units in the country to go all out to support the BJP. With the Congress fighting against the BJP with the Sangh solidly behind it, the results could not have been any different. Therefore the Congress has to appreciate the ground realities and start from scratch for which it has to bring back its senior leaders to revamp the party. The 'yuvraj' has clearly failed.

TMC gears up for hawkers’ registration yet again By Priyanka Dhomse
T
he Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), which had announced the Thane station area as a 'no hawking zone' a number of times earlier, has once again come forward with the same declaration following the Supreme Court's orders regarding the National Hawker's Policy. Following the order, TMC commissioner Asim Gupta said that for the legal hawkers, the TMC will deploy security guards and will also provide them with identity cards. But the hawkers haven't show much enthusiasm with regard to the registration process. There are more than 40,000 hawkers in Thane and most of them are illegal. The TMC had held awareness campaigns within Thane a
few months ago for registration of hawkers, which received a cold response as out of the 40,000-45,000 hawkers in Thane, only 8,000 submitted the registration forms. "The guards we will deploy will be paid for by the fund which we are going to collect through the registration fee paid by the hawkers," said Asim Gupta, TMC commissioner. The citizens however are doubtful about the implementation of the new policy as the earlier performance of the TMC in many non-hawking zones has been dismal. "The non-hawking zones are Thane station, area near Masunda Talav and market area near station, but these areas are still full of illegal hawkers," RTI activist and Thane citizen C Tawade told the ADC.

P.C. Vergesh, a business executive, says that the present
contractor exploits the situation of the monopoly, by charging Rs 650 per head for any occasion, which is not affordable for financially weaker members of the community. Biju is in possession of the papers from the municipality showing that plans were passed for a church, and not a commercial structure. He says that the church authorities are liable to be prosecuted for evasion of taxes
and other financial misfeasance besides other laws. The ADC called the office of the Bishop, but was informed that the bishop is in Kerela for an ordaining ceremony and that the reporter should speak to Fr Justin, PRO, who denied receiving any complaint, and added that St Thomas Church is a trust but not a public trust and therefore the constitution is different.

he All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) is one of the toughest exams in India that students are required to pass in order to get admission into MBBS and BDS. Besides cracking it, what’s more difficult is to secure high marks in the medical entrance exam. As the syllabus for AIPMT is the same as that of Class 11 and Class 12, it’s recommended that you start preparing for the exam as soon as you enter Class 11. Scoring high marks in AIPMT is not rocket science. It just requires a considerable determination, dedication and devotion.

How to score high in AIPMT? Continued from pg 13 « You need to keep in mind certain guidelines if you really aim to score well in AIPMT. First, you should read the interviews of toppers and take a page out of their books to get good results. However, do not blindly adopt someone’s study techniques as it is important to understand one’s limitations while devising a study plan. For wholesome preparation, study the NCERT books of Classes 11 and 12 thoroughly. In cases of doubt, you can refer to other books. Practice a lot of MCQs and build a strong foundation in physics, chemistry and biology. You can also practice previous years’ question papers to enhance your preparation. Apart from this, there are All India Test Series available online on various elearning portals. You can opt for the same and boost your preparation. The online test series will give you the benefit of knowing what kind of questions might come and where you stand. AIPMT questions are not always repeated hence it is important that you revise all the topics carefully, concentrating on every minor detail. As far as biology is concerned, learn from the NCERT biology books, as most of the questions come from these books. Take up online mock tests frequently and try to solve the paper in two rounds. If you feel you cannot solve a question or the calculations are lengthy, just mark it and move on. Solve the whole paper at once and after
use of available time. Try to complete the paper in two rounds before three hours. This way you can increase your speed and time accordingly. The national level benchmarking will help you understand how much more you need to prepare and where you actually stand. Your results will be compared with national level toppers, hence on the basis of this analysis you can improve your performance. You should revise biology more often as it will be the deciding factor while your papers are being checked. If you have issues with your current timetable, you can start afresh by making a new timetable every month. Make it a point to study two subjects each day and gradually increase it to three subjects, so that you become habituated to studying all the three subjects that will appear in the exam. Don’t forget to study diagrams as questions might crop up from the same. Emphasise more on biology because 90 biology questions come in the exam. The colleges you apply to will depend on how you have performed in your BCom and on the GMAT. Many USA and Canadian insitutions will offer an MBA with a focus in finance, instead of an MSc. in finance. A few colleges you can consider in these two countries are: University of Alberta, Schulich Business School (York University), Rotman Business School (University of Toronto), Indiana University, MIT, Purdue, UCLA. I am interested in pursuing MBA (finance). I would like to know about the one-year MBA programmes in UK,
US, Australia and Singapore. Which ones are good B-schools, which will have good job prospects (whether in that country or India) and good ROI after the course gets over and which exam is required. —Anam Kapur There are several one-year programmes in the UK, US, Australia. In the UK you can consider LBS, Oxford, CASS. You should also consider the INSEAD MBA programme (either in France or Singapore) and National University Singapore. The US one-year programmes – Columbia, Kellog, Cornell – typically will reduce your chances of getting placed after your MBA. In Australia, you could consider Melbourne Business School, AGSM, and Australian National University. These are all top colleges which will require a strong profile and high GMAT scores. In terms of placements, UK is difficult because there are limited job oppor-
tunities. US, Canada, Singapore and Australia are all better options if you want to stay back and work there.
I am studying in Class 12 and will appear for my boards this year. I want to pursue medicine. Which is the best country to do medicine in and what is the procedure to apply? —Anil Shah If you want to study medicine after Class 12, I would highly recommend studying in India. You could also consider studying medicine in Australia or UK. The UK usually will require the BMAT exam or the UKCAT, and the Australian universities will require international entrance test administered by the Australian Council for Educational Research. Intakes into the MBBS programmes for foreign universities are extremely competitive.

“IIT Delhi was designed by Le Courvoisier,” says Ajay Poddar, Managing Director/Radiation Management and Solutions
I
did my B Tech in Civil Engineering. My father had just started an industry near Delhi for making Prestressed Concrete Poles and I thought that this would be helpful. I studied at IIT Delhi. The subjects I studied were Mathematics, Structural Engineering, Electrical Science, Surveying, Thermodynamics, Material Science, etc. IIT Delhi was designed by Le Courvoisier, the designer for Chandigarh and is a well laid out campus. Having grown up in Kolkata amidst comfort
and protection, the first day of college was full of apprehension, expectation and exhilaration. Yes, I was ragged. I resented it initially but I discovered that it was a great way to break in with the seniors. Some of the professors were good, some were friendly and brilliant. The rest were just doing their job. Initially the pace of our studies was very hectic. In three days all the subjects that were taught in school in three years were covered. We had classes from 8 am to 4 pm with 98 per cent mandatory attendance and at least two hours to be put in every evening after that. Having been used to an easier life, it was tough. I walked from the hostel to the college which was about 1 km. Later I convinced my father to let me have an old Mahindra Jeep from our manufacturing plant nearby which was not being used. The college was the confluence of different
<<Ajay Poddar with (L) Juhi Chawla and Vasundhara Raje cultures. Most people who joined were very focused and considered themselves very bright as they were toppers in their schools. I was neither focused nor amongst the top five in school. They also initially eyed me with suspicion and disdain as I was from a business family, and therefore assumed to be unfairly privileged and just there for a lark, while they were from a service background. This, of course, changed within a year as they realised that I was not a bad guy at all. I used to be a good TT player, was fond of singing and though shy, was passionate about the performing arts. I had an opportunity to interact with people from different groups and form great friendships. IIT gave me the courage to explore and imbibe new experiences and the courage to take risks.

In college we would eat and binge for four to five days at the beginning of the month when we would get money from home and then were broke for the rest of the month. Travelling without tickets in buses, running up credit bills at dhabas near the college and landing up at friends' places, who were domiciled in Delhi, was not unusual. I stayed in a hostel and have many fond memories of my college life. I locked a fresher in a cupboard while going out for tea with the door a bit ajar so that he could breathe and stretch. During ragging, I was perched on a ledge on the third floor not knowing whether to jump or not. I remember sipping a cup of tea after bhang for one hour, watching a movie and feeling that we have understood all nuances without actually remembering anything. Once my friends and I finished the

small complimentary bottles of liquor at a friend’s place (about 50 of them); and then filled them up with water. His father was embarrassed while serving them to a friend and the son had to bear the brunt. The highlight of college life was watching a friend streak on the main road for 1 km for a bet of Rs 100. One incident embarrassed me. During a visit to Mumbai while we were in college I was told by a person at a New Year’s party that IIT guys get grass cutting women into their rooms through their windows. It was embarrassing because one such incident had happened in one of the hostels, and we could not deny it. My education helped me tremendously. It made me look at things with an open mind and enhanced my ability to break down a problem into simple parts and then solve the same. I got very interested in innovation. I guess it had something to do with my creative instinct. In our plant, I found new ways of making a better product and new products. I kept starting new enterprises which were eco-friendly like LPG gas cylinder manufacturing, bottling, design and installation of automated multilevel parking systems and finally, research into ground and wi-fi radiations and ways to change their nature to render them harmless, which led to establishing Environics. Education gave me the courage to stick to my path and conviction, even though it was difficult and daunting. Remuneration can vary a great deal. When one is working for one’s own company/enterprise, one tends to take much less salary than if one is working for another organisation as a professional. One could be getting anything between Rs 40 lakh to 10 crore per annum, like any other professional, depending on proficiency and success. I would advise students to follow their passion and dreams and not to do things because there is peer approval for the same; also not to be afraid of changing their course; if they find what they are doing is not interesting or enjoyable.

iddhartha Pahwa, CEO of Meru Cabs visited IIM Indore Mumbai Campus to interact with PGP students recently. Pahwa had a diverse experience of more than 16 years in companies like Abbott Healthcare Pvt ltd, Piramal Healthcare Limited, Unilever and PwC before joining Meru Cabs. Pahwa completed his studies from ICWA and ICAI. Pahwa shared his journey in building the Meru brand in the taxi services industry. He said that Meru relied on data processing and analytics in order to strategise their business and gave insight on cost benefits of using taxis over owning a car, which they wanted people to understand to make the business a success. Pahwa said that Meru provided value through continuous technology implementations. He shared different innovative technology systems which they have implemented in order to improve convenience to customers and employees and which has also helped them save costs. For example they implemented Home button for the driver which tells one when the driver wants to go home and as it is pressed it gives the driver opportunity to take a drop in the direction of his home. Similarly, they
have implemented a number of selflearning innovative algorithms and gave sheer importance to technology to thrive in the market and provide differentiated services. Pahwa, expressing his grief on the unfortunate incident in Delhi, said that customer’s safety is Meru’s primary concern and they can never compromise with anything for the sake of that. They implemented an advanced tracking mechanism and made the driver identification process strict in order to ensure a safer ride to the customers and their family members. Pahwa concluded the lecture by sensitizing participants about how they can grow their business by creating a story or mission and bringing momentum to back it. He insisted that it is necessary to align the organization with the company’s goal to make profits and cut costs. According to him some things can’t be compromised even if the business needs to be shut down. The whole session gave a good insight to the participants about how to create a brand and transform any business with constant technology implementation and focused leadership.

« ADMISSION ALERTS SCI-TECH EXHIBITION AT VIIT
What: Sci-Tech Exhibitions for school students & teachers as a first step towards a wider goal of integration. An intimate interaction between students and teachers of schools and colleges and the industry personnel during 'SciTech' could help evolve a synergy between Science, Technology and Engineering and could be a role model for many institutions to follow in future. When: January 2 and 3, 2015 Where: VIIT Campus ‘E’ Building A vibrant and economically prosperous India needs a technically strong and innovative manpower. This requires a seamless intertwining of Science, Technology and Engineering into one trilogy. Science, which tries to understand the basic phenomena of nature, is the fountain head of all the Technological developments. Another trilogy which is the backbone of Human Resource Development is that of Schools, Engineering Colleges and Industry. In today’s scenario there seems to be disjointedness in both the trilogies. Hence, Vishwakarma Institute of Information Technology a premier engineering college, known for its academic excellence in engineering education, run by Bansilal Ramnath Agarwal Charitable Trust, Pune, is making an attempt to bring a sense of coherence by organizing a Science and Technology or 'SciTech' Exhibition as a first step towards a wider goal of integration. An intimate interaction between students and teachers of schools and colleges and the industry personnel could help evolve a synergy between Science, Technology and Engineering and could be a role model for many institutions to follow in future. The foundation of basic ideas is laid in the schools by the Science and Mathematics teachers. These teachers play, therefore, a very important role in shaping the perception of the students. Hence, in order to equip them with visualization techniques, in the form of models and animations, which would connect the basic concepts with the applications in the real world, VIIT has taken the step of inviting them to participate in the Science Exhibition. SciTech – 2015 will include exhibits, prepared/modeled by the students from FE to BE of all programs at VIIT, along with interactive Fun-Tech games and a platform for interaction with industries for possible student mentoring. They have a vision of seamless confluence of Schools, Engineering Colleges (like VIIT) and Industry to create valuable human resource for a technically skilled and prosperous India. In line with this vision, they regularly schedule an outreach program inviting students of XI std, from colleges/schools within Pune, for the exhibition, with the objectives of firstly, strengthening their foundation in science and Mathematics; secondly, by viewing the exhibits put up by students, basic concepts could be linked with applications in the real world. On one hand it will be a message according to the Clean India Campaign because it cuts down pollution and on the other it will save the overused energy sources like gas, coal, etc. “The purpose of Maha Surya Kumbh activity is to invoke a mass level awareness of the
<<Children with the solar cookers and (below) an image of the solar cooker practicality of using solar energy, induce amongst young children a sense of innovation, simplicity and can-do feeling
by staging a historical event using an ultra simple solar oven. It can cook most routine items like rice, vegetables, cake, soup for one or two people. Being portable it can be carried anywhere in a back pack,” says Dr Alka Mandke chairperson of Keshav Srushti. While after the event the children will be taking the Suryakumbh solar ovens back to their home and continue using it, the organisers believe that this experience of using simple innovations to address complex global problems along with 25,000 others will excite the children to think simple, act radical and dream big. After the grand success of staging Surya Kumbh – the
Guinness World Records accredited World's Largest Solar Cooking Festival held last January, Keshav Srushti and Professor Rajendra Singh Oorja Abhiyan (PRSOA) are set to welcome the coming new year on an even mega scale with an ambitious Maha Surya Kumbh. Organised by nonprofit organization ‘Keshav Srushti’ in collaboration with PRSOA, SuryaKumbh 2014 was a huge success, where 3,484 students had participated at a time to cook on solar energy. More then 30 per cent of the children continue to use solar cookers at home to warm food, cook rice or noodles and even for making tea.

aking up late and ending up bunking the most important lectures? Or fixing up a date and ending up reaching late resulting in a “not so good mood” of your girl friend? As the case may be. Punctuality is one of the most important elements not just in case of a date or a lecture, but for every meeting you fix, decisions you need to take, clients you need to visit, projects you need to supervise. In every aspect, effective management of time is the soul to reach the goal. Owing to this, I am focusing on how one can do the things planned or the dates fixed on time. There may be many ways but a strategy that I use is 'backward planning'. Backward planning is a strategy that is adopted by navy forces to plan out disasters on the frontiers in the stipulated and decided time. However I feel it would be more useful in case of the
management students. In this strategy you plan everything backward. For example, you have a lecture at 8 am in your college and hence your plan will start from 8. Now let’s go backward. For example you need about an hour to reach college from your house (it may differ with the distance, college and individual) and thus you need to leave house by 7am. Once this is done you plan out the time required for you to have your breakfast. Consider you require 10 minutes for your breakfast, and may be 20 minutes for rejuvenating your body and soul in a hot shower and another 10 minutes for exercise (if you really do) and may be 15 minutes to dress up. Thus in order to reach your destination on time, you need to wake up 10+20+10+15+60 = 2 hours approx in advance. That is at 6 am. And if you complete all your work in the time planned by you, you surely will be able to plan out the best date and not be tagged with the word 'LATE' ahead of your name. Wish you a Happy Backward Planning.

Six new airlines to start operations in 2015
Six new airlines are expected to fly the Indian skies next year, the government said on Tuesday as it asked states to join hands to promote regional connectivity and help the aviation sector meet its burgeoning losses by reducing taxes on jet fuel. "Most of the airlines in the country are reported to have incurred losses and some airlines are struggling to stay afloat despite a high (air traffic) growth rate," Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju said at a meeting in New Delhi.

EW DELHI/MUMBAI: Protests by Bajrang Dal activists against Aamir Khan blockbuster 'PK' spread to more places on Tuesday even as a saddened Rajkumar Hirani, the film's director, rejected allegations that it was disrespectful to Hinduism and said it upheld the true spirit of religion. Activists of right-wing outfits Bajrang Dal and Hindu Sena staged a protest outside a cinema hall in Central Delhi, demanding a ban on the film for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. The demonstrators also burned posters of the movie, which takes a swipe at organised religion and godmen, and demanded that an FIR be registered against its makers and the star cast. "Some agitators staged a protest outside Delite cinema. They were detained and taken to the nearby police station," said a senior police official. Protesters also raised slogans against the movie demanding ban on its screening across the country. In Uttar Pradesh, the activists of Hindu Yuva Vahini entered the premises of 'Prasad Talkies' in Bareilly,

In a statement, Hirani, 52 , said he had no intention to hurt anyone's sentiments and maintained that the Aamir Khan-starrer upholds the true spirit of religion while condemning "only the abuse" of it. "I'm deeply saddened and concerned about the protests by some groups against our film 'PK'. On be-
half of the entire team of 'PK', I would like to clarify that we respect all religions and faiths," he said. "Our film is inspired by the ideas of Sant Kabir and Mahatma Gandhi. It is a film, which brings to fore the thought that all humans who inhabit this planet are the same. There are no differences," he said He appealed to the protesting groups to see the film in totality and not just isolated scenes. "Our intention is not to hurt

Cars, durables to be costlier from Jan as excise sops end
N
EW DELHI: It may not be Happy New Year for consumers as prices of cars and durable goods like TV and fridge will go up from Thursday as government will end excise duty incentive, a move that will help it garner up to Rs 1,000 crore in the remaining three months of the current fiscal. "The government is not extending the excise duty concessions on the auto sector and consumer durables," a senior finance ministry official said. Excise duty on small cars, scooters, motorcycles and commercial vehicles was reduced to 8 per cent from 12 per cent previously. For SUVs, it was cut to 24 per cent from 30 per cent; for mid-sized cars, to 20 per cent from 24 per cent and to 24 per cent for large cars, from 27 per cent.
Amidst protests in several parts of the country against the screening of Aamir Khanstarrer 'PK', the Information & Broadcasting Ministry yesterday said it cannot act on a film once it has been cleared by the Censor Board. Speaking to reporters here, Minister of State (MoS) for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, however, added that state governments could act depending on the law and order situation. Citizens are also free to approach courts in case they have grievances, he said. Rathore said when a film comes up for release, the Censor Board certifies it and has the authority to see, review the film and ask for certain deletions. "But once the Censor Board certifies a film, thereafter the Supreme Court's guidelines are very clear, there have been past precedent also....And the High Court is very clear on it that the central government cannot act on a film thereafter," Rathore said. State governments are authorised to take action depending on law and order situation, he added.

Indians may witness 2 celestial events in 2015
The world is expected to witness four celestial events in 2015, out of which, two are likely to be watched by stargazers in some parts of India. According to calculations, these rare celestial events would begin from March 20 with a total solar eclipse. However, it will not be visible in India, Ujjain's Jiwaji Observatory's Superintendent Rajendra Prakash Gupta told PTI in Indore yesterday. On April 4, 2015, a total lunar eclipse with the sun, earth and moon playing hide and seek would occur, which would be visible in some parts of India. The more than two centuries old observatory's head said that on September 13, a partial solar eclipse would be visible. It would be the second solar eclipse of 2015, but it would not be visible in India. On September 28, a total lunar eclipse would occur which would also be the last eclipse in 2015. It is expected to be visible in Western Gujarat and some parts of Rajasthan.

Oil prices traded near five-year lows in thin year-end trade yesterday, as analysts predicted further bearishness in the market owing to rising US production despite a global supply glut. West Texas Intermediate for February delivery rose 15 cents to USD 53.76 while Brent crude for February gained 14 cents to USD 58.02 in mid-morning trade. WTI closed down USD 1.12 to USD 53.61 in New York while Brent fell 57 cents in London to USD 57.88. Both contracts last traded at those levels in May 2009. "We are seeing light volumes in Asian trading... Oil prices have once again touched new lows over longer term concerns about US production levels," Michael McCarthy, chief market strategist at CMC Markets in Sydney, told AFP in Singapore. "Bullishness is contained, and I think we will be seeing a consolidation pattern as we head to the close of the year," he added. Oil has shed about half its value since June, attributed to slowing growth in China and emerging-market economies, a recession in Japan and a near-stall in the eurozone.
Oil Firms Finances Severely Strained
Indian Oil Corp (IOC) and other state-run fuel retailers have piled up inventory loss of over Rs 10,000 crore which together with depreciating rupee has severely strained their finances ahead of a revision in petrol and diesel prices. IOC along with Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL) and Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) are to decide on revising petrol and diesel prices today, amidst clamour for a rate cut on falling crude oil prices. The firms, however, rue that petrol and diesel prices are not set based on trends in crude oil prices. They are bench-marked against internationally traded rates of gasoline (for petrol) and gas oil (for diesel) as well as rupee-dollar exchange rate Industry sources said rupee has depreciated against the US dollar since the last revision on December 16, making imports costlier.
Tata Housing Cashes Through Google Shopping Festival
Realty player Tata Housing has received booking orders worth Rs 130 crore against 200 units in the three-day Google Online Shopping Festival (GOSF) held earlier this month. The number of units booked this time during the GOSF event saw a four-time jump over the previous year's sale, the company said. "For both luxury and affordable segments, the total booking order is around Rs 130 crore," it said. A host of other developers like Purvankara, Mahindra Lifespaces, HDFC Realty, among others had, also participated in the GOSF, wherein a buyer books a property by paying an initial booking amount. The participating developers had also launched exclusive offers as part of GOSF, like Tata offering units in an affordable housing project in a distant suburb of the financial capital.
Sebi Bans Karmbhoomi Real Estate From Raising Funds
Continuing its crackdown on illicit money-pooling schemes, Sebi yesterday barred Karmbhoomi Real Estate from raising funds from the public with immediate effect and directed it to not launch any new scheme. Based on a preliminary probe, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) found that Karmbhoomi was running 'collective investment schemes (CIS)' without obtaining requisite certification. In an order today, Sebi whole time member S Raman said: "I find no other alternative but to take recourse to an interim order against Karmbhoomi and its directors for preventing them from further carrying on with its existing fund mobilising activity by launching CIS, without obtaining registration from Sebi in accordance with law".

he last few months have seen tailwinds converging for India’s airlines – such as improvement in demand and therefore passenger load factors (PLFs), a largely stable rupee-dollar exchange rate, and most importantly, a steep fall in crude oil prices. That would mean airlines are set to post their best operational performance in the last five years. At an aggregate level, domestic carriers are expected to post an operating profit of Rs 81 billion in fiscal 2016 - a complete U-turn from the Rs 15 billion loss posted in fiscal 2014. That translates into a spectacular 14 percentage point improvement in
operating profit margin to around 11% in fiscal 2016. Says Prasad Koparkar, Senior Director, Industry and Customised Research at Crisil: “We believe Indian airline companies will have one of the best business environments to operate in for a long time. Falling crude oil prices are a big positive. We expect about 25 per cent lower air turbine fuel prices for fiscal 2016 compared with fiscal 2014. More importantly, the fall is accompanied by an improving demand scenario, unlike fiscal 2010 when the players were unable to benefit significantly due to weak demand. We expect average passenger traffic growth to be about 10-12 per cent over the next couple of years.” Given their current financial position and the improvement in PLF, airlines are likely to retain a large proportion of the benefit of lower crude prices. We could also see a 24 per cent increase in average realisations of airlines due to lower discounts being offered. There’s more tailwind. Despite the entry of new players in the domestic market, competition is expected to be moderate. Existing airlines will go slow with domestic capacity addi-
tions due to the existing financial stress – in fact, Spice Jet has reduced its fleet size from 58 to 37 aircraft in the current year – while capacity addition by new entrants such as AirAsia and Vistara is expected to be gradual. Crisil believes PLFs will improve 300-400 basis points over the next couple of years. But the flight path to net profit for the industry will be another story, especially for three carriers – Jet Airways, Air India and Spice Jet – which account for about 75% of the commercial aircraft fleet in India but over 93% of the sector’s debt of Rs 705 billion as of March 2014. Says Rahul Prithiani, Director, Industry Research, Crisil Research: “We believe reducing losses will be a function of sorting out their capital structures. Today about 15% of their revenues are used to pay interest on debt. Till there is recapitalisation, the sector is unlikely to fly to a net profit at an aggregate level any time soon, though airlines with lower debt burden will turn profitable. To do so, interest expenses will have to halve. This, in turn, will mean a recapitalisation of around Rs 350 billion – primarily for the three carriers.”

Meanwhile, the Economic Survey has also pitched for amendments in the act and suggested that the centre use constitutional powers to end monopoly of wholesale markets and replace coercive state laws affecting the food market. EW DELHI: Mahendra Singh Dhoni's decision to retire from Test cricket with immediate effect might have stunned a lot of people but BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said that "it wasn't taken in haste" and came after a lot of "soul searching and deliberations". Although Patel did not divulge details of his discussions with Dhoni, he did admit that he knew that Dhoni wanted to "quit one of the formats" in order to concentrate on remaining two formats. "MS is a very practical man. Today, he called up just after the Test match in Melbourne and told me that he wanted to retire from Test cricket. I asked him "what happened are you injured or what?" He just calmly told me "No, I just want to quit Test cricket for good,". He is an Indian captain and a distinguished cricketer. It's his personal choice and I needed to respect that," Patel told PTI. "I asked him,"Is it your final decision and he told me "Please wait a bit as I want to inform the boys about my decision and then you can make an official announcement. He duly called up and told
me that I have informed the boys and you can go ahead. In the meanwhile, I also contacted chairman of selectors Sandeep (Patil) and Shivlal Yadav. Both felt that we should respect Dhoni's decision," the BCCI secretary said. "I was a bit taken aback by the suddenness of his statement. But we had spoken about it before the

onships and the 2011 ODI World Cup), had been drawing flak for India's poor run in overseas Tests. India have won just six away Tests out of the 30 that Dhoni has captained. Among the most embarrassing defeats under Dhoni were the 0-4 whitewashes suffered in England (2011) and Australia (2011-12).
Besides the team also suffered defeats in South Africa and New Zealand and had been beaten by England yet again this summer. Yet the wicketkeeper-batsman remains one of the most successful captains ever for India, having led the side to the top of ICC rankings in Tests in 2009. With the team continuing to perform badly overseas, pressure was mounting on Dhoni to quit the job with former players and critics questioning his defensive leadership in the longer format. The criticism notwithstanding, Dhoni became the Indian captain to score most runs in Tests, making 3454 runs, going past Sunil Gavaskar (3449), Mohammad Azharuddin (2856) and Sourav Ganguly (2561). In 60 matches as captain, Dhoni had a decent 27 wins, 18 losses and 15 draws to show. In the 90 Tests that he was part of, Dhoni scored 4876 runs at an average of 38.09 with six hundreds and 33 50s to his credit. Dhoni did not play the first Test in the current series against Australia because of a thumb injury. In his absence, Kohli led the team and won accolades for his attacking approach. Many former players declared that it was time for Kohli to take over the leadership from Dhoni given that the incumbent had been struggling to present any fresh approach.

To me it was a real surprise. I thought he will play for one or two more years in Test cricket as he's a very fit person. His overall record overseas has been average, but India does not have the bowling attack to take 20 wickets in overseas conditions. DILIP VENGSARKAR "It came as a surprise, didn't it, that he quit midstream. It (decision to quit) could have been taken earlier. But perhaps he thought it was the right time to hand over the mantle to the next man. I think he has quit in the larger interest of the game. CHANDU BORDE The decision was extraordinary. Dhoni’s decision comes as Kohli in another verbal barrage with Australia a huge suprise: Gavaskar M M
ELBOURNE: Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said that Mahendra Singh Dhoni's retirement news was as surprising to him as to anybody and he never expected the 'Captain Cool' to quit Tests altogether. "The decision comes as a huge surprise. Though it is not sudden. I was expecting him to step down from captaincy after the Sydney match but did not think he will retire as a player. I still think that he had 2 or 3 more years of cricket left in him," Gavaskar told NDTV. A spate of overseas Test losses forced the 33-year-old captain to call it a day from the longer format after
India's draw at the MCG, which did not save the Border-Gavaskar Trophy from staying with Australia. Gavaskar said the pressure of captaincy can sometimes get too much. "In a captain's life sometimes the burden gets too heavy. This Test match (Melbourne game) was like that. There are times when you try everything and nothing works. And probably that time had come for Dhoni," he said. On reacting to Dhoni's post-match comment of allowing this team some more time and the series a "learning curve" for many a young player, Gavaskar said it was a case of pure excuse.
ELBOURNE: Indian batsman Virat Kohli was engaged in yet another fierce verbal battle with the Australian team on the fifth and final day of the third cricket Test at MCG. The incident happened when Kohli was batting during India's second innings and he survived a narrow run-out chance in the fifth over. Kohli had hit a Mitchell Johnson delivery towards mid-off and ran to the other end to steal a single even as Murali Vijay, who was at the non-striker end, didn't move. Warner fielded the ball but his throw was poor. After the incident, Brad Haddin started saying "It's all about you. It's all about you", while clapping his hands in Kohli's direction. Kohli appeared to gesture
in the direction of the umpires, apparently in protest of the Australians' needling which was audible on Channel Nine's stump microphone. "That would have been a shame, Virat," Shane Watson was quoted as saying by Herald Sun. On Sunday, Kohli had said that he was called a "spoilt brat" by the Australians and it
brought the best out of him as he smashed a career-best 169-run knock. Kohli again had a go at Johnson and apparently said something to him when he was walking off after being dismissed on Monday. In the press conference later, Warner said "whatever happens in the field should stay on the field"

ELBOURNE: The Border-Gavaskar Trophy has gone out of their grips and at a loss to explain the Indian cricket team's performance, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said his side has been finding ways to trouble itself on an already tough tour. Chasing 384 for a win of the fifth and final day at the MCG, Dhoni and company finished on 174 for six before the two captains decided to shake hands. Australia retained the Border-Gavaskar trophy and Dhoni said they are themselves to be blamed for the result. "We have found ways to trouble ourselves. In all the Test matches so far, I felt we have got good partnerships going and all of a sudden we lose a few wickets and that puts pressure on us," Dhoni said in the post-match presentation. "And also there were quite a few loose shots that were played and I feel that in a Mitchell Johnson celebrates after taking the wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara on the final day of the test match. game like this it is very important that once you are on We have found ways to trouble ourselves. Starting at 261 for seven, the hosts declared only after playing on despite two rain interventions with the score reading 318 for nine. Ask Dhoni about it and he opines that Shaun Marsh, run out on 99, would have been the reason. "I don't really want to comment on that, the reason being it's their stuff. They would be thinking about it. But it gets a bit difficult if you declare slightly late. And when one of your batsman reaches 90 then you have to wait for him. But apart from that I don't want to say much," he said. Smith, standing in his third Test as captain after regular skipper Michale Clarke was forced with an injury, believed otherwise and said that cricket is a team game. "It was all about the series to be honest rather than Shaun (Marsh). That's the way we play. It's a team game. We felt if we left a little bit for then they would have gone after it," Smith said. The record fourth-wicket 262-run partnership between Virat Kohli (169) and Ajinkya Rahane (147) was the highlight of India's first innings and Dhoni was all praise for the batting duo.
Bengal openers get a start after following-on
Aniket scores hat-trick in K Desperadoes’ big win
MUMBAI: Aniket Shipe scored a hat-trick to power Desperadoes SC to an emphatic 8-0 win against Cochin FC in a lop-sided first division match of the MDFA (Mumbai District Football Association) League – 2014-15, played at the St. Xavier’s ground, Parel on Tuesdayevening. The other players who contributed towards the win were Prashant Dhanu who netted a brace and one each from Kishore Bamania, Jaideep Patel and Rajesh Damane. In another match of the same division, Goan Sports Association (GSA) also had things much their own way as they stormed to a comfortable 5-1 win against a young Magic Bus outfit. For the winners, Diego Fernandes and Hemant Patil, both struck a brace each and Rakesh Dhanu one, while Mobin Khan netted the lone goal for the losers.
OLKATA: Under-fire veteran opener Arindam Das shrugged off his poor form with an unbeaten 80 as Bengal showed lot of resolve after being enforced followon by Mumbai on the third day of a Ranji Trophy cricket match. After being bowled out for 210, 55 runs short of magic figure of 265, Bengal scored 129 for no loss in their second essay with Arindam batting in company of a very sedate Rohan Banerjee (44, 139 balls). Bengal are looking for a point from this fixture after giving away 204-run first innings lead. Earlier, youngster Abhimanyu Easwaran scored a career-best 85 before Bengal were bundled out for 210 losing their last four wickets for an addition of 80 runs. It was a frustrating day for Mumbai especially after Shreyas Iyer dropped Das batting on six at the gully off Shardul Thakur's bowling. The reprieve cost Mumbai
Bengal batsmen Arindam Das and Rohan Banerjee during the 3rd day of the Ranji Trophy match between Bengal and Mumbai in Kolkata on Tuesday. badly as the senior opener went about his innings without taking any risk while the wicket had little to offer. Mumbai used as many as seven bowlers but none could give a breakthrough before bad light stopped the proceedings more than an
hour before the scheduled close of play. "We could have cracked down had we got the break. It was hard for the bowlers. If the conditions are overcast and gloomy, I'm sure the ball will do something. We are still in a chance to close
them down," Mumbai opener Aditya Tare said. Earlier resuming at 130 for 6, the highlight of Bengal's batting was Easwaran who held the fort with wickets falling at the other end. Kshemal Waingankar gave the first breakthrough when Suvojit Banerjee was bowled in a shocking fashion when the Bengal batsman displayed lack of judgment to leave a delivery that pitched in line of off-stump. Waingankar (2/76) got a second by castling Veer Pratap Singh (14) as Easwaran, who had survived a couple of close leg before calls, threw away his wicket when he tried to pull Wilkin Mota (2/76) by only to be caught at deep midwicket. Brief Scores: Mumbai 1st Innings: 414 lead Bengal 1st Innings 210 in 74.4 overs (Abhimanyu Easwaran 85, Manoj Tiwary 63; Shradul Thakur 5/59) and (f/o) 129 for no loss (Arindam Das 80 batting, Rohan Banerjee 44 batting) 74 runs.
31 Retirement from Tests won't affect Brand Dhoni: Prasoon Joshi By Bharat Sharma
NEW DELHI: Mahendra Singh Dhoni's brand value worth millions of dollars will undergo a change after his retirement from Tests but it is unlikely that the poster boy from Ranchi will go downhill in the world of endorsements, ad-gurus Prasoon Joshi and Prahlad Kakkar said. "Dhoni has reached a stage where retirement from Tests should not affect his brand value. A brand goes through ups and downs, a brand also has a life cycle. He would now be known for diffferent attributes after today's retirement. His image will go through a change of course but would it be downhill for him? I don't think so," Joshi, an advertising guru and noted Bollywood lyricist told PTI. According to the 2014 figures, Dhoni endores more than 20 brands, charging approximately Rs 13 crore per annum for each product. The 33-yearold is also the sole Indian in Forbes' lists of world's most valuable athlete brands where he is ranked fifth with a brand value of USD 20 million. Kakkar, on the other hand, believes Dhoni's saleability would have dropped had he also quit from ODIs and T20 Internationals. "All sportspersons eventually retire in the mid or late 30's. He now has more time to venture into unfamiliar territory. He certainly does not have to worry about the money. What he has earned by now should be enough for the remainder of his life," said Kakkar. He further said: "Anyway Dhoni's brand value was not because of Test matches, it was because of ODIs and T20. So as long he is playing, he should be fine." Joshi, however, feels that people will look at Dhoni differently. "There is a different dimension added to the personality. Every stage of the carreer brings in differents dimensions and attributes. It is not just about cricket for him. He is seen as a story whose life is good enough for a book or a film," opined Joshi. "Every step somebody takes will change the way the brand is consumed. In his case whether it will take a turn for good or worse it remains to be seen."
