RPF constables ignore plight of handicapped passenger being bullied, saying they are ‘only’ on duty in the ‘ladies compartment’

ednesday night was fine for Ram (name changed), a handicapped traveler in the Virar fast local, until a bully entered the handicapped compartment and started harassing the handicapped passengers.

When Ram raised his voice against the bully, he was caught by the collar and abused and threatened that he would be thrown out of the running train. When Ram asked for help from two RPF constables sitting in the adjacent ladies

compartment, they ignored him.

Emboldened by their indifference, the bully himself abused the RPF constables, but even then they did not respond.

Later, when the ADC spoke to the constables, they said, “We have our duty only in the ladies compartment and cannot take care of any other incident or issues, whatever they may be!”

This incident took place in the 9.25 pm Churchgate-Virar local’s handicapped compartment. When the train reached Bhayandar station, a middle-aged person entered

Entering into a compartment reserved or resisting entry into a compartment not reserved.If any passenger— (a) Having entered a compartment wherein no berth or seat has been reserved by a railway administration for his use (b) having unauthorized occupied a berth or seat reserved by a railway administration for the use of another passenger, refuses to leave it when required to do so by any railway servant authorized in this behalf, such railway servant may remove him or cause him to be removed, with the aid of any other person, from the compartment, berth or seat, as the case may be, and he shall also be punishable with fine which may extend to five hundred rupees.

(2) If any passenger resists the lawful entry of another passenger into a compartment not reserved for the use of the passenger resisting, he shall be punishable with fine which may extend to two hundred rupees.

The two RPF constables kept watching the incident from the adjacent ladies compartment, and ignored requests for help. They remained non-committal even after being abused by the bully who later got off and ran away when the train reached Virar station.

The ADC spoke to Roshan Singh, one of the two constables, who said “We have been allotted duty in the ladies compartment and cannot leave it.” When asked why no help was provided even after the handicapped passengers pleaded for help, Singh refused bto comment and

walked into another compartment.

Later, when handicapped passengers telephoned the Western Railway and asked Ajay Kadam, the other constable, to speak to the control officer, he refused but relented when the angry mob at the station started creating chaos.

Surprisingly, when the victim stepped ahead to lodge a complaint, he was asked to leave the platform by the RPF. Sameer Dave, Railway passenger activist, says “These RPF constables should be punished under the IPC. The person who was a bully should be traced and caught by the cops.

Whatever it may be, an FIR has to be lodged to take further action.”

n view of the Diwali festival starting from November 1, both private sector power supply utilities Tata Power and Reliance Infrastructure (RInfra) have issued an advisory urging people to celebrate a happy and safe Diwali.

The Tata Power company has set up a exclusive dedicated helpline number 022-25774399 and Toll Free number 18002095161 which consumers can call in case of a fire or accident during Diwali. Besides this, the company has deployed vigil patrols at all consumer power sub-stations of expert duty engineers who will check all meter cabins to prevent them from being used as firecracker dumps. The company has also conducted fire safety audits of high footfall areas

like hospitals, educational institutions, malls and theatres in and around Mumbai.

On the other hand, RInfra has issued a list of Do’s and Don’ts for people celebrating Diwali. The company has asked people to desist from tapping power supply by inserting bare wires, using 2 pin plugs and sockets and overloading a plug point.

They have also asked consumers to cover the bare portions of electrical connections with good quality insulation, to always ensure a matching plug and socket to avoid loose contact and consequent heating and melting, to use fully insulated tools while handling electric wires and equipment and to promptly dial the power utility and the police in case of any fire or accident.

Temporary shops for possession and sale of fireworks during festivals. During festivals, the District Magistrate may issue temporary licences for possession and sale of fireworks in a temporary shop subject to the following conditions namely :— 1) The fireworks shall be kept in a shed made of non-flammable material, which is closed and secured so as to prevent unauthorised persons having access thereto.

2) The sheds for possession and sale of fireworks shall be at a distance of at least three metres from each other and 50 metres from any ‘protected work’.

3) No oil burning lamps, gas lamps or naked lights shall be used in the shed or within the safety distance of the sheds. Electrical lights, if used, shall be fixed to the wall or ceiling and shall not be suspended by flexible wire. Switches for each shop shall be fixed rigidly to the wall and a master switch shall be provided for each row of sheds.

4) Display of fireworks shall not be allowed within 50 metres of any shed.

5) In one cluster, not more than 50 shops will be permitted.

The Department of Explosives had already made it mandatory for manufacturers of fireworks to mention the noise levels in decibel units on firecrackers.

The manufacturers are also required to declare on the packing of the boxes that the noise levels conform to the standards prescribed under the Environment (Protection) Rules, 1986. The department had already included the prescribed noise limits for firecrackers as additional conditions of licenses issued under the Explosives Rules, 1983. The authorities empowered to enforce the Explosives Rules, 1983 have been clearly defined under the said Rules.

Are there any rules related to buying fire crackers?

Before you buy crackers, ensure that there is no label or declaration on the box stating that they are “not for sale in India” or “only for export in other countries”. If there is such label, do not buy these crackers, they are not according to Indian standards and maybe harmful. Immediately report such vendors to the Department of Explosives.

No licence shall be necessary for the following cases, viz. : possession of fireworks not exceeding 100 kg. for own use and not for sale; possession and sale from a shop of amorces and sparklers in quantity not exceeding 100 kg.

he menace of rickshaw drivers at Bandra station is getting worse with the drivers illegally over-charging commuters and engaging in triple-lane parking causing traffic jams. Passengers raising their voices against such behaivour are even assaulted by the errant auto drivers. With traffic officials nowhere to be seen, locals alleged that traffic and RTO officials work hand in glows with auto drivers.

Five gangsters were convicted under all four sections applicable to a 2011 case of kidnapping and extortion

n what can be termed a landmark judgement, five dreaded gangsters were awarded four times life imprisonment for all four sections of the IPC applying to the 2011 case of kidnapping and extortion on Tuesday.

The convicted accused identified as Ganesh Shinde alias Ganya, Bajrang Nichite alias Ganya Taklya, Abhijeet Babar, Mangesh Chavan and Vilas Shinde. Talking to ADC, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy said,

“Such a judgement is a shot in the arm, which sets a precedent and gives impetus to the entire force especially at the time when the underworld tries to raise its head considering the current scenario of zero encounters”.

The judgement by Judge Prithviraj Chavan (Special MCOCA court) was due to the strenuous efforts of the crime branch sleuths and particularly inspector Vinayak Vast and his assistant Sanjay Nikam.

However, the crime branch gathered all the relevant evidence and built a water-tight case against Ganya and his gang and consequently, the accused would now spend 20 years in jail.

Unfortunately, the police could not gather relevant evidence against the sixth accused identified as Ravi Shinde, who was acquitted from all the sections due to lack of evidence.

T

he unhygienic condition of Sanpada railway station has disappointed commuters. But more pertinent are the complaints of women commuters that sex workers walk freely within the station premises at night making the area unsafe.

While these complaints have been made repeatedly, they have fallen on deaf ears.

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Sanpada ward office however, has now taken this issue to the City Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) and the Railway Department. MNS delegations have also handed over the complaints to CIDCO Chairman Pramod Hindurao and Railway Commercial Inspector Rajiv Ranjan in the hope that these issues will be sorted out soon.

Till recently, women commuters have been asking for a guard at the station premises in the hope of feeling safer.

n Thursday, the VP Road police station arrested a chain snatcher; a historysheeter notorious for carrying out crimes in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane.

Imran Noor Mohammed Mansoori alias Buthi (28) was arrested by theVP Road Police along with two accomplices.

On October 27 at 8 am, Sunanda Shankar Shinde (40), a tailor by profession was walking along with his sisterin-law Sangeeta Jadhav at Grant Road near Bachubhai chowky. They were returning home after purchasing gro-

ceries when two people on a motorbike pushed Jadhav and snatched her chain and fled. The victims shouted for help but in vain.

The complainant, Sunanda Shinde immediately registered a case at VP Road police station. Mansoori is a resident of Marine Centre building in Vashi, in Sector 6. His accomplice Vijay Kale is also wanted in the case.

According to Rajendra Chavan, Senior Police Inspector, VP Road police station, “Two gold chains and two and a half kg of gold have been recovered from Mansoori.”

fter one of his senior party leaders created a flutter in political circles and snubbed the Congress by attending the Left parties’ meet, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president and Union Agriculture Minister, Sharad Pawar yesterday made it cleat that his party supports the Congress and will fight next year’s Lok Sabha elections jointly.

Speaking to reporters, Pawar said, “On Wednesday my party leader attended the Left-sponsored convention of regional parties in New Delhi because like-minded parties had come together to keep communal forces at bay. But this does not mean that we are parting our ways with the Congress-led UPA and the Congress party”.

The convention was seen as an attempt to cobble up a non-Congress and non-BJP Third Front. Significantly, none of the parties committed to its formation yet because a similar attempt before 2009 polls had failed. NCP leader D.P. Tripathi, who attended the conclave, had justified the party’s presence, saying that just because the NCP was part of the government did not

Sources in the government informed that the latest amendment to the stalled anti-money lenders legislation was the sixth. The central government had returned the state legislation for amendment. The state has now amended the legislation to exclude banking institutions engaged in banking transactions approved by the Reserve Bank of India.

OT all babus are angels. There are quite a few who use their position to get kickbacks. They do this in league with politicians.

There are instances in which ministers cooperate and make a kill. The IAS Officers Association is fighting for Mr. Khemka and Ms. Durga Shakti who faced the disapproval of politicians just because they are honest and did their duty.

Mr. Khemka hurt the dynasty family and, as a consequence, had to suffer. He had exposed the alleged corrupt land deal of Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law and for this daring action went out of favour of the UPA government. The IAS officer however has remained firm and refused to change his stand.

The Akhilesh Yadav’s UP government has also taken unfair action against IAS officer Durga Shakti for doing her duty. Finally, in her case the government had no go but to withdraw the suspension order and reinstate her.

Now, the UPA and some state governments which had tried to get rid of inconvenient officers have got a harsh order from the court.

The court has apparently taken the side of the honest officers. The government has a lot of explaining to do. The Supreme Court has sent a firm message to the politicians. It has observed that India’s bureaucracy has not to be embattled. The court has said that there should be no orders to the bureaucrats.

It is pertinent to point out however that the IAS officers resort to open corruption whenever they get a chance to do so. An instance is provided by the way the IAS officers behaved during the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi. They must have gained a lot during this period when they harassed people – particularly the business class.

N an earlier column I had made a reference to the inauguration of the Kolkata edition of The Hindu In School – a remarkably brilliant, original and innovative idea that merits greater attention. The paper itself was first launched, I understand, on April 2, 2012, across nine Indian cities with an initial print run of a bare 50,000 copies. Imagine my surprise to learn that the “standalone school edition” proved to be an instant hit, with an average circulation now of over 200,000 copies. If that is not a major achievement, what else is? The paper, especially for students between Class VI to XII, according to its editor Siddharth Varadarajan, is meant to “provide a blend of news, features, sports, comics, crosswords, puzzles and contests and columns in a language and style that students could relate to and engage with”.

The students between Class VI and XII should normally be between the ages of 12 and 18 years. In the thirties, when I was a school student, Class VI was called First Form and it was the start of the lower secondary.

The higher secondary started with Fourth Form and ended with Sixth Form when one appeared for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC). What would children between the ages of 12 and 18, say, want to know?

Informative and educative The approach of The Hindu In School, says its editor, is not to provide “sensationalism or trivilaisation”, but moves to be child-friendly with balanced, trustworthy and sober presentation. One suspects that is more said than done. Unfortunately, I have had no access to earlier issues and right now the only one I have is the Kolkata inaugural edition, I keep thinking what I would do, if I were the editor, what would a youngster know in furtherance of the subjects he is taught at school like history, geography, science, arithmetic, algebra, geometry etc? What sort of pictures should one publish? Shouldn’t he be made aware of contemporary affairs in an objective way?

Should violence, especially communal violence be given any prominence, such as, for example, the Muzaffarnagar riots? If Jata were involved shouldn’t one know who Jata are and what are their cultural norms? One understands that they make good soldiers. If the

paper has a circulation of over two lakh, it obviously meets the students’ requirements quite well and I am hesitant to say more. I presume that the paper should not only be ‘informative’ but should also be ‘educative’ in a subtle way, enough to make the young reader wish to keep every issue as a text book in its own way. But what strikes me is that if The Hindu can run such a special issue for school children, why can’t other papers, especially language papers go in for a similar enterprise? Imagine children studying in any language of their own having a paper to read and digest published in their own mother

E have a few festive days. Once a year we celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights, and light many lamps in the darkness.

But our life is dry and dull; and it is just because this is so that man has had to create festivals. The birds, the beasts, the plants, the rivers, the waterfalls - they have neither Diwali nor Holi. It is because man is sick that he is satisfied with just one Diwali. One Diwali is just a consolation. So on that day the new clothes, the firecrackers, the lighted lamps — and then we return to the same gloominess, the same prison, the same misery, the same anxiety.

DIWALI TREATS

Diwali is all about sweet indulgences and delectable savoury goodies. If you’re planning on having guests over, Rhea Dhanbhoora & Priyanka Singh suggest you cook up a storm with some of these great dishes, from chefs across the city

Chef Sayya M.A from Ranbanka Palace shares a recipe of lip smacking malpua with rabri: ingredients l 4 litres milk l 150g maida l 20g cut pistachios l 10g elaichi (cardamom) l 1½ kg sugar l 700ml water l 1g kesar (saffron) l 2 litres ghee l 4 litres milk l 200g sugar Method

Rabri: lPut

four litres of milk and 200g sugar in a kadai and boil for 15 minutes till it reduces to a litre. l Cool for one hour and add elaichi and kesar.

Malpua:

Mix sugar and water and heat for 10 minutes.

Pour in the milk and boil till it reduces to one litre. l Cool it for an hour, then add maida, pista and kesar. Mix it in rabri to make the pouring consistency better. l Add ghee and spoon the batter 20ml at a time into a tawa. Fry till golden brown. l Soak the malpua in sugar syrup and serve. l l

KeshRiya shReephal buRfi Swadshakti Restaurant shares their special recipe for Keshriya Shreephal Burfi with us: ingredients l 1 cup fresh coconut l 2 cups coconut milk l 110g jaggery l 2-3 pieces of clove l ¼ tsp nutmeg powder

3 tsp cow’s ghee 5-6 strands saffron l ¼ cup grated beetroot l 2-3 pieces soaked almond l l

Method l Heat the ghee and add cloves, coconut and beetroot. l Sauté on a slow flame and add saffron and coconut milk. l Cook this over medium flame till the milk thickens and becomes a thick fudge that rolls off the spoon easily. l Grease a metal bowl; transfer the coconut mixture into it and sprinkle cardamom powder. l Once it cools down, cut into small sized squares and garnish with almond slivers.

Charnamrit shots with raw banana Chips

method l Reduce the milk for 16 to 20 minutes, then add 50g of sugar and boil for two minutes. l Remove from the heat and keep it aside to get the rabadi at room temperature. l Add jackfruits in the bowl and pour the rabadi on top of it. l Garnish with kesar and pista.

Chef Kunal Kapur, one of the judges of reality show, MasterChef India, gives us Charnamrit recipe with an urban twist. ingredients: For charnamrit l 1 cup milk l 2 tbsp curd l 1 tsp sugar l 1 tbsp honey l 2 leaves of tulsi, chopped l ½ tsp cardamom powder l Few drops of rose water l Few drops of kewra (screw pine) For chips l 2 raw bananas l Oil for frying l Salt to taste

rose barFi Harshal Shah, owner of Spices & Flavours in Fort, gives us a low-calorie barfi recipe: ingredients l ¾ cup low fat paneer or cottage cheese l 3 tbsp crumbled low fat mava l 2 ½ tbsp powder l 1-2 drops of rose colour

method l For charnamrit shots, place all the ingredients in a bowl and mix them lightly with a spoon. Refrigerate it to chill. l For making the banana chips, in a bowl add ice cold water and some salt. l Using a slicer, thinly slice the raw banana into wafers. Immediately dunk the wafers in iced water for five minutes. l Remove the chips and place on a kitchen towel. Pat them dry completely. l Heat oil in a deep pan. Heat it to high and immediately fry the bananas till crisp. l Remove and sprinkle some more salt.

Serve them with chilled charnamrit.

Remove and let it cool. Store in an air tight container.

or Bandra residents who miss popcorn haven Hogger’s Park, the popcorn higher powers have answered your prayers. Carter Road’s newest eatery sells just popcorn. We expected people to flock there like crazy but WOW has received a lukewarm response. The main reason lies in the way the joint is laid out.

Firstly, WOW doesn’t give away anything — you have to read the fine print to realise it’s a popcorn shop. Secondly, the counter faces sideways so you can’t see what’s going on. But, once you venture in, you’re engulfed by a buttery smell that will make you feel like you’re consuming calories just by inhaling. Plus, the staff is attentive and very sweet, which is also welcoming.

They’ve got around nine varieties of popcorn on offer: including Cheese, Famously Caramel, Kettle Sugar & Salt and Mumbai Cheese Tadka, as well as a few unique offerings such as mint. These are available in small (`60-75), medium (`115145) and large (`220 – 280) tubs. We tried their Classic Mix in small which is a combination of cheese and caramel. The cheese popcorn was nice, but pretty movie-theatre standard. But, the caramel popcorn were shaped like spheres of perfectly combined butter, sugar and salt. Another nice thing is the way it’s packed — the containers can be closed which makes it travel friendly and the half/half boxes are vertically filled which means that you don’t have to finish one before getting to the one below. Sadly, the unique mint popcorn was unappetising and the pricing seems steep for popcorn. They also serve gift jars (`200) filled with popcorn which look cute but we feel they are unnecessarily expensive.

Overall, this is a nice joint to stop by before movie night if you want a treat. The caramel popcorn is really worth having. But be careful, while the kernels won’t, the price might stick in your throat.

ou never thought they’d actually open up, right?

Well, as the people behind the Barking Deer microbrewery say, “Impossible happens!”

Mumbai finally gets to say hello to its first microbrewery, which officially opens on November 7.

The three beers that they have brewed in-house include the Bombay Blonde, India Pale Ale and Flying Pig Belgian Wit. The Bombay Blonde is what they call a “transition beer.” The beer that adjusts your palate from commercial to microbrewery style beer. It’s their lightest offering, made with malted wheat and German and Czech hops. The beer is refreshing and distinctly bitter at first, but the taste grows on you.

The Belgian Wit is a slightly

darker beer with orange peel, coriander seed and cumin. This one went down with the crowd really well — the slight tangy flavour added a nice edge. Our favourite of the night. Sadly, the India Pale Ale was too bitter for my liking. While there was a citrus undertone to it, the bitterness was so strong that it hits the back of the throat, in a not-so-nice way. Perhaps it’s for the more refined beer drinker.

All three beers are priced at `350 which we think may be a little steep considering that you already get some pretty good beer at that price. But, it’s still exciting to have a microbrewery in the city. On November 7, they will be auctioning out the first glass of beer and the proceeds will go to charity.

New & unique Baluchi

B

aluchi, the Indian and Mughlai restaurant at The Lalit, has undergone a change in its kitchen and is now helmed by Chef Sameer.

Quite predictably, a menu overhaul followed which features some of the chef’s signature dishes.

Sameer loves experimenting and pairing ingredients that you’ll seldom think can go together and this is reflected in the menu.

We started with Mausam Ka Nichood (`325) for drinks, which I believed would be a mixed fruit juice, but it was plain orange juice and tasted like one of the canned varieties. Skipping the other drinks, we went straight for the appetisers. We were served Baluchi Chooza Kebab (`975), which was chicken marinated in lime, orange and ginger; the chef’s citrusy take on chicken kebabs was a pleasant surprise. The Gosht Shikampuri Kebab (`1,200) had a fiery yogurt and onion mixture stuffed in lamb minced patties and it was another delight. The Hare Mutter Ke Seekh (`875) was up next, which were rolls made entirely of green peas. Too dry on their own, they tasted good with the spicy coriander and mint chutney served alongside. Then came the king of all appetisers — Jhinga Zebunnisa (`1,200) — scampi marinated with bedige chilli, carom seeds, lime juice, and salt; delicious but it’s a task to get to the soft meat inside. Next, we tried the soups Shurva E Masta Va Khair (`500) made of watermelon seeds, baby onion and cucumber — creamy but average and Putthe Ka Shorba (`550), a broth made of lamb’s neck that was full of flavours but very heavy.

For main course, to accompany the Indian bread basket that consisted of kulcha and paratha, we were served Awadhi Dum Ka Murgh

Priyanka Singh sampled the new menu of Indian restaurant Baluchi at The Lalit and comes away impressed... and convinced the chef is in love with yogurt!

Curry (`1,250), carom flavoured tangy fish preparation; Bhindi Nazaqat Wali (`850), stuffed with baby okra; Paneer Sooya Qorma (`850), cottage cheese and dill leaves in cashew nut, onion, cream and yogurt base gravy; Aloo Ki Qatli (`850); twice cooked potato, with sesame seeds, green chilli and lime and Dal Baluchi (`800), black lentil stew. While the murgh and fish curry were rich and delectable with mild flavours, the saalan was standard. The bhindi had a delicious spicy masala mixed with crunchy onion and the aloo had mouthwatering gravy. Qorma was a little runny for me but Dal Baluchi is a must-have.

Mithai lovers will fall in love with this one. If you love Indian food that is a tad different and not too heavy (except some dishes), Baluchi’s new menu will not disappoint you.

orget being the master of the universe, we’ve found our kind of superhero! Fabrice Danniel is the Master of Patisserie, candy-making, chocolate work, ice-cream and catering. Born in the South of France, Fabrice worked as a pastry chef in several prestigious Michelin star awarded restaurants in France before taking his love for all things sweet to Lebanon and Cairo. He joined Le Cordon Bleu in 2003 at the original school in Paris as a pastry chef instructor. He was then enlisted to become Executive Master Chef and Technical Director at Le Cordon Bleu Dusit in Bangkok, Thailand, since the school was founded in 2007. Currently, Fabrice is spinning his magic at Le Cordon Bleu in Australia. We caught up with him during his recent trip to the city to find out when Le Cordon Bleu is going to open up here and more importantly, whether a pastry chef ever gets fed up of desserts.

When did you realise you had a passion for patisserie?

When I was young, I used to run around my grandmother (who was Vietnamese) and try to taste

and eat everything. I get my passion for cooking from her.

Have you tried any Indian desserts?

Some of them I find are too sweet. But I love kulfi — I could eat it at any time.

Do you ever tire of desserts?

Never! The key is to eat good quality, premium dessert.

After a hard day, what’s the one dessert you crave?

(Thinks) Something light and crispy. With a little crunch.

Who would you like to make dessert for?

Vikas Khanna.

Besides dessert, what food do you love?

Japanese food, because it’s light. I also like Indian food. I tried the fish at Gajalee and it was magnificent.

What’s the most important aspect when it comes to desserts?

The temperature is the most important thing.

HOGI PYAR KI JEET

Surjit finds out that his sister is in love with Manjit Singh, the younger brother of Thakur Gajendra Singh. When his sister gets pregnant, Surjit goes to Thakur’s house in order to get Manjit to marry his sister. The Thakur humiliates him, making him, a vegetarian, eat dog-food, and beg on his knees. Surjit does so, and is told to go home and make wedding preparations. The next day, Thakur visits Surjit and kills him and his wife in broad daylight.

Surjit’s last dying wish is that his two sons, Raju and Kishan, must get married to Thakur’s two daughters, Megha and Preeti, and they must have the Thakur come begging to their doorstep for this marriage alliance. Surjit’s sister agrees to this, and accordingly brings up the two children. Unfortunately, Raju decides to move away, leaving her alone to bring up Kishan. Years later, they are re-united when Raju returns home, and they join together to fulfill Surjit’s last wish. CVO, 9 p.m.

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose moderately on Thursday (October 31, 2013) a net 47.45 points (0.76%) and closed at the 6299 point level.

The market opened down at the 6237 points level. It then declined by a few points and registered the day’s low at the 6235 points level at 9.54 a.m. The index then rose and turned into a range bound movement until 2.42 p.m. It then rose sharply into the green and registered the day’s high at the 6309 points level at 3.18 p.m. The index then declined and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session, moved in a range of 73 points and closed a point below the psychologically important 6300 points level. Sentiment was bullish at the Nifty touched 6300 levels for the first time since November 10, 2010. Amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 35 were gainers, while 15 stocks closed in the red. All the sectoral indices barring healthcare closed in the green. Substantial buying was witnessed in consumer durables, PSU, banking and metal stocks.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 48.63%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 749 were gainers, 615 were losers and 80 remained unchanged.

Despite high advertising expenses on the Annual August Discount Scheme, the company was able to grow operating profits by 22.7% to Rs310mn with mere 53bps drop in operating margins. PAT was high at Rs148mn, 8.3% below estimates on the back of accelerated depreciation and lower operating profit.

Estimates lowered; Maintain BUY: We have reduced revenues by 8.5%/9.4% for FY14/FY15 on the back of lower gym count, lower consumer in-take on the back of weak economic sentiments and delay in traction for Zumba and Reduce. PAT has been lowered 11.4%/16% for FY14/FY15 factoring in lower operating profits and accelerated depreciation. TBVF is currently trading at 10.1x FY14E and 7.5x FY15E EPS of Rs13.9 and Rs18.7 respectively. We maintain BUY rating on the stock with a reduced target price of Rs205 (rolling forward to 9.5x Sept 2015). Downside risks are lower customer intake with Zumba and Reduce not gaining expected traction.

Religare calls a ‘Buy’ on Shriram Transport Finance CMP: Rs. 613 Target Rs. 710

Shriram Transport Finance reported disappointing Q2FY14 results marked by continued pressure on NIMs and asset quality. NII grew by 4.3% YoY to Rs 9.1bn whereas PAT declined 3% YoY to Rs 3.3bn. NIMs on AUM were down 28bps QoQ to 6.7%. AUM growth also moderated from 24.4% in Q1FY14 to 21.4% YoY in Q2FY14, and GNPLs increased by 21bps QoQ to 3.3%. While SHTF’s operating performance will remain subdued due to a muted CV cycle, we are positive in the long term due to its niche presence and reasonable valuations.

AUM grows by 21.4% YoY: Disbursements in the used CV segment grew by 34% YoY to Rs 68bn, but that in new CV segment declined by 57% YoY to Rs 4.9bn. As per management, SHTF is going slow in the new CV segment due to subdued demand and high competition. AUM in the new CV segment slumped by 12% YoY whereas that in the used CV segment grew 30% YoY. Rural segment continues to grow at a healthy pace. We expect AUM to grow by 18% CAGR over FY13-FY15 to Rs 668bn. NIMs on AUM declined by 28bps QoQ to 6.73% partly driven by higher cost of funds (~20bps) and lower asset yields on a changing asset mix. Equipment finance business – AUM growth moderated: Given the challenging macro conditions, growth in CE AUM moderated to 2% QoQ (as against 11.6% QoQ in Q4FY12). GNPLs/NNPLs increased marginally and PAT declined by 9.4% QoQ to Rs 232mn. Fee income from Automalls declined by 9% YoY to Rs 165mn. Valuations reasonable: We trim our FY14/FY15 EPS estimates by 8.8%/8.6% to factor in the pressure on NIMs and higher provisions. Our TP stands revised to Rs 710/share (1.7x FY15 BV/10x FY15 EPS) from Rs 775 earlier.

Karvy Stock Broking calls a ‘Buy’ on Maruti Suzuki CMP: Rs. 1638 Target Rs. 1700

Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) has delivered robust performance in Q2FY14, way above our and street expectation. Despite adverse market situation, MSIL’s Average Selling Price (ASP) and operating margins improved YoY & QoQ. As its Q2FY14 financials are post merger of SPIL, while its Q2FY13 financials are pre merger, its direct YoY comparison is not meaningful. Its net revenue grew 26% YoY & 2.3% QoQ to Rs. 104.6 bn, while ASP per vehicle rose 4% YoY. Its EBIDTA margin rose 650 bps YoY & 123 bps QoQ to 12.6% due to currency benefit on raw material import and cost restructuring owing to SPIL merger. Outlook & Valuation: In view of expected slowdown, we cut our volume and revenue estimate by 3% each for FY14E & FY15E. Accordingly, we cut our margin estimates and reduce EPS estimate by 2% & 5% to Rs. 96.2 & Rs. 117.2 for FY14E & FY15E, respectively. We cut MSIL’s target price by 5% to Rs. 1,700, valuing the stock at 14.5xFY15E EPS. In view of expected healthy volume and strong profitability in FY15E, we reiterate “BUY” recommendation on MSIL with potential upside of 12% from CMP.

igh gold prices are forcing jewellers and consumers to look for other alternatives this festive season. Fashion trends are changing from the yellow metal to diamonds and other metals like platinum, ahead of Dhanteras and Diwali.

A recent survey done across 350 jewellery houses in various cities in India by industry body Assocham reveals that the jewelers in major cities like Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Chennai, Ahemdabad, Kolkata, Dehradun are looking at unique mix of strategy to sell jewellery in the current fluctuating market conditions.

The survey reveals that nearly 76% of Jewelers are focusing on

platinum-based diamond jewellery over the traditional gold and silver jewellery to tap the changing preferences of domestic consumers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With gold prices rising, white gold, diamonds or platinum is the new trend among buyers.

There is an increasing focus for platinum jewellery in this festive seasons, said Delhi-NCR-based jewelers who owns a diamond jewellery brand.

According to an estimate, the share of platinum and diamond jewellery in the overall gold jew-

ellery has increased significantly over the past one year and is likely to reach about 30-35 % of the total gold jewellery sales in the year 2015.

The prices of the yellow metal had crossed Rs 32,000 mark during calendar year 2013. On the other hand, industry experts anticipate gold prices to continue fluctuating for some more time as the rupee remains weak against the US dollar. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The existing prices of platinum, however, offer great investment opportunities to the smart investor to jump on the investment bandwagon,â&#x20AC;? said D S Rawat, Secretary General ASSOCHAM. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With gold prices reaching astronomical highs, more and more Indian investors are now looking at diamonds and platinum as an equally lucrative investment opportunity,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Price Correction In Gold Ahead Of Dhanteras May Spur Buying O

n account a price correction just ahead of Dhanteras sentiment has turned a little positive.

The earlier prediction that the rising demand amid tight supplies will push the prices beyond Rs 33,000 per 10 gram on Dhanteras had thereby spread gloom amongst jewellers and buyers.

Like every auspicious day Dhanteras will see buyers coming to buy jewellery today,â&#x20AC;? said Sachin Kothari, Director, Bullion India.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The price range may be between Rs 30,500 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Rs 30,700 per 10 gram which may push the sales up,â&#x20AC;? he said.

According to the estimates, the festive demand for jewellery on â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Dhanterasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is expected to remain stable, but sale of coins and bars would see a decline by almost 50 % from the year-ago period.

As per the trade data, gold prices rose by 20 per cent to Rs 32,485 per 10 grams on Dhanteras day in 2012.

Rates jumped by 37 per cent to Rs 27,130 per 10 grams on the festival day in 2011. In 2010, gold prices on Dhanteras day stood at Rs 19,740 per 10 grams.

However, All India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation Chairman Haresh Soni believes the, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Impact of high gold premiums will be there on prices on Dhanteras because supplies have dried up in the absence of imports in the last three months.

Indian stock markets today witnessed a record daily turnover of over Rs five lakh crore, even as the benchmark Sensex missed its all-time intra-day high by a whisker. The BSE Sensex, however, managed to record an all-time closing high of 21,164.52 points. Yesterday, during intra-day trade, the Sensex rose to as high as 21,205.44 points, just 1.33 points away from its record high of 21,206.77 points scaled on January 10, 2008.

Countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) has topped customer satisfaction with dealer service for a 14th consecutive year, rated by market research firm JD Power Asia Pacific. According to JD Power Asia Pacific study, in a 1,000-point scale MSI had a score of 876, while the mass market average was 834. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Maruti Suzuki performs particularly well across all factors,â&#x20AC;? JD Power Asia Pacific said in a statement.

Manufacturing units in SEZs can now sub-contract work for up to three years, instead of just one year allowed so far, as the government has relaxed the norms to help boost shipments from special economic zones. o great exuberance in the markets as they touched a new high yesterday, leading up to Diwali. But there is a tinge of optimism. With the earnings season more or less behind us, and no negative surprises there, we should be looking ahead to a phase of consolidation in the markets All seems to be quiet on the currency front. Inflation is the only sore point preventing interest rates tending down and markets tending up. But we hear from experts again and again that the good monsoon will bring food prices to manageable levels as also a pickup in global economy will incrementally increase exports and that would help manufacturing and the services sector grow.

The real driver of markets, economy and growth will be a decisive result in the forthcoming elections.

First, the immediate interest would be elections in the 5 states post-Diwali. Though these states go to polls in November, the results will be declared on December 8. During this period, one will witness a lot of exit polls and psephologists trying to hone their skills at getting predictions right.

The Stock markets will have their own assessment and will react pos-

itively or negatively, but will move within a range which could move up or down, depending on outcome on December 8. This will be followed by the Q3 results in January, which will help stabilize the markets and will give pointers as to which sectors could lead the next rally.

Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s look back at the year gone by â&#x20AC;&#x201C; while the Sensex and Nifty have not done much except grow in single digits those who invested in scrips like HCL Tech, TCS, ITC, Dabur, and HUL have seen hand-

These still remain good stocks to bet on and one could add select private banks to them like Axis Bank, Yes Bank, Kotak Bank and Indusind Bank. A scrip like Tata Global Beverages could also be added to balance oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s portfolio.

While bank stocks have rebounded 10 to 30% from their recent lows, and have potential to lead the next leg of the rally, consumption stocks like Tata Global could appreciate multiple times over a longer time frame of 2 to 3 years.

It is time to build up a strong portfolio which has both defensives like IT and consumer bellwethers, along with banking and a few other stocks with potential to appreciate sharply, but make sure that they are backed by sound managements.

The real big event would be the Lok Sabha elections of May 2014 and just as political parties are gearing up to battle it out, investors also should be ready with a war chest to track both markets and political developments and start building a strong portfolio. At the same time they should not over-commit themselves and remain partly in cash, say 20 to 30% to be able to buy at lower levels in case of an uncertain outcome.

aras Arora is the young gun on Hindi film marquee who will make his debut in the much awaited Kangana Ranaut starrer Rajjo. A class 12th student, he has all the talent to make it big in tinsel town. He has also acted in the TV show Shivaji.

How did you get this opportunity?

Unlike others, I did not have to give any auditions for this role. Vishwas Sir had already seen my show Veer Shivaji and had made up his mind since then. Though it was difficult for me at that time as my show was on air and I was blocked for another 30 days, but I really wanted to do this film because this character was different from the ones I’ve been doing earlier. Then fortunately I came to know that the shoot had been postponed and my show Veer Shivaji was taking a leap.

What is your role in the film?

I am playing an 18-year-old decent boy named Chandu who belongs to a respected Maharashtrian family. He is a music lover and plays harmonium very well. He is a very studious person and is also the captain of his college’s cricket team. After winning the match for his college he reaches the kotha with his

friends where he sees Rajjo for the first time and falls in love with her.

How was your experience working with Kangana?

She’s a great actress and everybody knows that. We share a casual professional relationship which is necessary for two co-actors.

Heard that you skipped your 12th exams for this film?

Yes. [makes a sad face] I was preparing really hard for my boards but my shooting schedule was clashing with my exams. As we had combination scenes where all the actors were required so eventually I had to skip my exams.

How was your experience like?

Rajjo is an unforgettable experience. I can rather call it adventurous too, as while shooting at Tawarwadi, the temperature was too high and we had to manage having watermelons and lemonades. We also had to face a storm due to which the shoot was cancelled for that day. Working with Binod Pradhan was like a cherry on the cake.

You used to shiver while shooting with Kangana?

NO! I wasn’t nervous. Actually we had a scene where I had to slap Kangana and by mistake I slightly hit her, so I was tensed about hurting her. In fact she was uncomfortable doing the intimate scenes with me as I was a minor.

Even I have tried hard to play the three main characters of the previous franchises but the result has come out very well with the special effects being mind-blowing.

Reportedly you wanted to play the negative role of Kaal which Viveik Oberoi is playing now?

Yes. It’s true but I was not allowed and the only name that came forward to play

the role was of Viveik Oberoi and he has done a fantastic job. I really envy him.

AGPUR: Disappointed at being hit all over the park by Australia, a few Indian bowlers feel it will be better to put a bowling machine in the field instead of they rolling their arms in the ongoing ODI series, India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said.

India and Australia together scored a phenomenal 2565 runs from the four matches played so far, excluding the 295 the visiting team scored in the abandoned Ranchi ODI and Dhoni said it is a new challenge for the bowlers to contain runs.

"It was more of a fight as to which side bowls less badly. With the extra fielder inside, if you are slightly off target, it goes for a boundary. A few of the bowlers are disappointed, they actually feel it will be better off to put a bowling machine there. It is a new challenge for the bowlers," said Dhoni here last night after India chased down Australia's 350 with six wickets and three balls to spare.

Dhoni said bowlers will eventually sort out how to adapt to the new ODI rule enforcing an extra fielder inside the 30-yard circle as compared to earlier times. "We have not played enough with these set of new rules (in operation). That's why when you are captaining and a side has scored 300 or 325, you are not really used to it. All of a sudden, you see, 15 overs left, 220-230 and the Power Play is left, you are not really able to digest the feat because it's not really natural," said Dhoni.

"Three and a half hours of batting, the opposition is just hitting sixes and fours. It will take some time before the bowlers will also adjust to it. And at the same time, we will see some particular day if the wicket is doing a bit, sides may get out of 150-180 because of the two new balls. We will have to wait and watch but as of now, on good flat wickets, with a bit of dew around, it becomes a bit unfair on bowlers.

The best of bowlers, fastest of bowlers, even they are at times bowling with third man and fine leg up. It is difficult for the bowlers as of now," Dhoni commented.

"We don't know in this format what is a bad performance. 10 overs 80 is a bad performance or 10 overs 60 is a bad performance or 10 overs 100 is a bad performance, that's what we are still trying to find out," he said.

Dhoni explained why he did not use Bhuvneshwar Kumar, India's most economical bowler, for his full quota of overs.

"In this particular game, Bhuvi bowled only one over in the slog.

Shami, he is someone who is bowling really good yorkers in the nets.

Even in the last game he was bowling good yorkers. So we thought maybe with a bit of pace and a bit of reverse swing, he will be a better bowler. Once he went for runs, we thought let us try some other spinners. The boundaries are big over here, they may exploit the boundaries. Once everybody went for runs, then we called Bhuvi. So yes, maybe that was a mistake, we should have tried him. By the time his turn came, there weren't many overs left. Maybe a genuine mistake but we will have to see."

Dhoni praised Virat Kohli's stupendous batting in the series. "Virat has grown as a player. He is someone who is very confident and we gave him opportunity and he grabbed it. He loves to perform and keep performing, especially the way he batted in this particular game, he made it look easy. It got a bit difficult at the end, with the kind of soil colour, it is difficult to sight the ball.

And there was a bit of reverse swing for their fast bowlers but still, the way he batted with ease, it was fantastic. He has got aggression, he has to control it which he is doing brilliantly. He is channelising it, using it for his own as well as the team's benefit. He's an outstanding player, very eager to do well for the team."

“I think we bowled better than there. I thought we had much better plans here. I could really see what

the bowlers were trying to do. We stuck at it really well. I’m certainly not disappointed with the bowlers tonight,” Bailey told reporters last night.

“I thought we tried really hard.

And how close? It’s getting down to three balls at the end there. You’re talking minuscule differences in the game,” he said.

Kohli carted the Australian bowlers around in a whirlwind knock which included 18 fours and a six. Bailey said his bowlers need to figure out a way to get Kohli out.

“I’d like to find a way to get Virat Kohli out. That’s probably my first thought. I don’t think we should read too much into 360 and 350. It’s quite clear that given the two new balls and the four (fielders) out, that

maybe the new 300-290. We’re disappointed not to win. But we’re not making too much of the score,” he said.

“I thought we fought are way back into the game really well. I thought Mitch and Jimmy found a way to get us back into the game. We’ve just got to try and find a way to sneak a couple of early wickets. That’s probably been the difference.

“To our bowlers’ credit I think we tried to make Virat hit really good shots. Particularly towards the end we made him hit good balls for four and six. I was really proud of the way our bowlers finished,” added the Tasmanian.

Bailey said the series has been particularly hard for the bowlers and the difference between win and

loss has been minuscule.

“Both teams are looking for a difference with the bowling attack. It’s been so hard for bowlers, it’s just about trying to find two per cent difference that could be the difference in the game,” he said.

He was full of praise for Watson, who was reprieved after being caught off a no ball bowled by Ravindra Jadeja. “He batted beautifully. (There was) a nice little reprieve with the (no ball), which was handy. He just puts so much pressure back on the bowlers, especially the spinners. He takes the focus off them bowling well to just bowling to survive. It’s great to see,” said the Australian captain.

Bailey also said India deserved their number one ODI ranking.

EW DELHI: Sports Minister Jitendra Singh has responded to his senior colleague in the government, Veerappa Moily's letter to him in connection with Jwala Gutta's ongoing impasse with the BAI, saying that he will examine her case and see how he can extend support to her.

In response to Petroleum Minister Moily's sternly-worded missive sent to him last week in support of Jwala, Jitendra said that all possible assistance has been given to her. Moily had asked for a fair treatment to the embattled badminton ace, who is facing a life ban for an alleged disciplinary breach in the Indian Badminton League. Jwala represents Petroleum Sports Promotion Board.

A top source in the Ministry told PTI that Jitendra has responded to Moily's letter, telling him that all possible help will be given to the ace shuttler. "We will get the matter examined and extend all support," Jitendra said in his letter to Moily, according to the source. "The matter is already with the court and it is sub-judice. Even the court has allowed the inquiry to go on," he said.

"The Ministry is always there to support the sportspersons' cause and we will do that in Jwala's case as well," Jitendra said in the letter.

Ghosal reaches quarters of World Championship M

ANCHESTER: Saurav Ghosal scripted history at the World Squash Championships as he became the first Indian to reach the quarter-finals of the mega-event by notching up a come-from-behind victory over Henrik Mustonen in a hardfought contest here.

OLKATA: Ever-reliable Shivnarine Chanderpaul struck an unbeaten 91 and shared an unbroken 170- run stand with Narsing Deonarine (83) as the West Indies reached a solid 333 for four against Uttar Pradesh on the opening day of their practice match, here today.

KARACHI: Pakistan's former captain and coach Mushtaq Muhammad cannot understand the recent "hue and cry" over ball-tampering as he feels every team and bowler has indulged in it in some form or the other, including he himself.

"Everyone does it and every team has done it so I am surprised at the hue and cry being raised over the ball-tampering incident during the Test between Pakistan and South Africa," Mushtaq told Geo Super channel from London.

"Even spinners tend to try to pick the seam of the ball to get a better grip and I admit I did it a few times myself when I was playing and this is also tampering," he said.

ICC rejects PCB concerns on Faf's ball-tampering punishment

KARACHI: The ICC has dismissed the Pakistan Cricket Board's allegation that leniency was shown in handing out punishment to South African player Faf du Plessis after he was found guilty of ball-tampering during the second Test against Pakistan in Dubai. A PCB source told PTI that the ICC had defended the decision of match referee David Boon to fine du Plessis 50 per cent of his match fees by quoting relevant laws and reminding that the changes in the clauses dealing with balltampering had been amended after approval of all member boards. The PCB had expressed concern that the Boon adopted a lenient attitude in the whole incident and had questioned the difference in the severity of punishments handed out to Plessis and Pakistan's all-rounder Shahid Afridi when he was caught tampering with the ball during a one-day international in Perth in 2010.

EW DELHI: With Virat Kohli regularly slamming centuries in ODIs, former captain Sunil Gavaskar today said the Indian batting sensation can break retiring legend Sachin Tendulkar’s record number of tons in the 50over format.

In the 112 ODI innings he has played so far, Kohli has scored 4919 runs with 17 centuries while Tendulkar at the same number of innings had scored 4001 runs with eight tons.At the rate the youngster is scoring centuries currently, Gavaskar said Kohli can break Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI hundreds.

“Records are meant to be broken.

While we know that some of Tendulkar’s records are well nigh impossible to be able to get like 200 Test matches, nor anybody can reach 51 Test hundreds.

“But the manner in which Virat is batting, the record for (Tendulkar’s) 49 hundreds looks possible. Now Virat needs 32 more hundreds to go and the number of ODIs Indians play he can do it. This cricketing season itself, Virat can get to 20 or 22 hundreds,” Gavaskar said.

going seven-match ODI series against Australia, Kohli smashed two of the three fastest hundreds by an Indian to help the home side level the series 2-2.

On October 16, he scored the fastest century by an Indian off just 52 balls in the second ODI against Australia before hitting the third fastest ton in 61 balls in the sixth ODI yesterday.

Asked if Kohli can take Tendulkar’s place in the Indian team after the senior batsman retires next month, Gavaskar said, “I think Virat has been simply outstanding. If you compare the statistics with what Sachin had achieved after 115 ODI games, you’ll find that Virat is well ahead. I think Sachin took around 80-odd ODIs to get his first hundred.” He said Kohli was fortunate to have played alongside greats such as Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and V V S Laxman early in his career.

“India is blessed to have somebody of the talent of Virat Kohli coming through. The fact that he has in his emerging years spent a lot of time with the likes of Sachin, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman and put that experi-

ence to good use on the field speaks very highly of this young man’s cricketing intelligence. That is the key,” Gavaskar said.

“He reads the conditions and situation well, he knows the opposition well and that’s the reason why he is scoring so consistently,” said the former captain.

Kohli is the fastest Indian to score 4,000 ODI runs and he needs 81 runs in his next ODI innings to break Vivian Richards’ record of being fastest to 5,000 ODI runs.

Gavaskar also said that he agreed with Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s view that the ODI game has now become a boundary hitting contest due to the new rule changes which do not favour the bowlers.

“I agree with Dhoni that we don’t want to see this seven hours of bang-bang cricket. This has become an extended version of T20 which is bang-bang from very beginning.

But it was expected in T20 but not in 50-over cricket, where you expect bowlers to have something. But if you have pitches like these that’s is not going to happen. The best of the bowlers will get smashed,” he said.
