7-day mourning at BMC
Mayor Sunil Prabhu, on Monday, declared a seven-day mourning period in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) as a mark of respect for the victims of the recent BMC building that collapse in Dockyard Road on Friday. 61 people died and 30 were injured in the tragedy. The mayor also directed the civic body to cancel all programmes including felicitation, inauguration and award ceremonies scheduled during the week. Consequently, the annual Ganesh Gaurav Puraskar and felicitation of senior citizens has been cancelled. However, healthcare related programmes, like the weekly health camp and inauguration of a dialysis centre will take place as scheduled.

he are 95 buildings, owned and maintained by the BMC, which are categorised as more dangerous than the one near Babu Genu market that collapsed last Friday, killing 61 people and injuring another 30. The issue of repairs of most of these buildings is pending due to either alternative accommodation being unavailable or vested interest of some political leaders and officers involved in approving redevelopment, as these all properties are standing on prime and strategic locations in the city. After last Friday’s tragedy, the civic body hurriedly circulated a notice, directing all civic officers and
employees to vacate quarters which are declared as dangerous. However, as there is no provision for alternative accommodation in the civic body, there is no progress happening in any direction. Residents of most of these buildings are Grade IV employees, conservancy workers, and in some instances also officers up to the Deputy Municipal Commissioner level. They are aware about the perils of residing in dangerous buildings, but have no alternative option. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has classified the dilapidated buildings, owned and maintained by it, into C1 (dangerous building, immediately to be vacated), C2A (dangerous building, part of which needs demolition)

A senior officer, who wished not to be named, said, “In 2008-09, there was some proposal for redevelopment of some of the buildings. Resident did not cooperate and complained to the then Municipal Commissioner, as the officer in charge had vested interests and the developer was not credible enough.” vishnudas.sheshrao@afternoondc.in

wo days after the building collapse at Brahmadev Khot Marg near Babu Genu market in Mazagaon, families are still dealing with their losses. While some are on the road to recovery unaware about the demise of their loved ones, others have reconciled to the fact that they have to live the rest of their lives without their families.
Strong despite the loss Vijay Sakharam Kamble, a BMC worker who lived in the ill fated building, has lost his family and relatives in the mishap. Yet, while speaking to the ADC, he was quite in control of himself, except for his moist eyes. “There is nothing left for me now. I am being treated well here (JJ hospital). I am taking my medicines on time and listening to the doctors. That is all. What more I can do now,” says Vijay who lost seven family members in the collapse. “We told him about the deaths yesterday but he did not cry. He is a very strong man. He has a strong heart. Who could deal with such tragic news with such calmness,” said Vijay’s brother, Gautam Sakharam Kamble. Gautam plans to take Vijay back to his village in Ratnagiri once his physical condition improves. “There are vidhis that have to be done by him for the dead at our native place. So I will take him there in a couple of days. And then bring him back here for treatment if required,” said Gautam.
Four-year-old Bhagyashree Kamble stands true to her name. She is probably amongst the few people whose entire family survived the collapse with not very serious injuries. The policy aimed at ensuring that the society takes their responsibility, giving them financial security, access to healthcare and housing and enabling them to lead a dignified life, was nodded at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan. On the eve of senior citizens’ day, the government announced this unique gift for the seniors of the state. According to this new policy, people attaining 65 years will be considered senior citizens. As per the policy, counselling centres will be
set up across the state to tackle the stress factor. Regular health checkups will be conducted and if required, medicines will be provided to them. Their financial planning will be done on a regular basis. Senior citizens will be protected from domestic violence. Protection will be provided to lonely senior citizens. Day care centres will be set up for them. According to the 2011 census, one crore people out of the state’s 11 crore population are above 60 years and among them, 47 per cent are men while 53 per cent are women. Significantly, the decision taken at the Cabinet meeting on Monday came 13 years after the Centre framed a senior citizens policy. suyash.padate@afternoondc.in

A triumph of meticulous excavation, the magic of Pompeii comes to the NCPA on film, thanks to The British Museum on October 6 and 7.
Pompeii in Mumbai this Sunday
WHO among us, on hearing the story of Pompeii, can ever remain indifferent to that epic tale of a thriving city, flourishing under the benevolent slops of Mount Vesuvius in southern Italy, being wiped out in a flash nearly 2,000 years ago! On a trip to that country a couple of years ago, we made sure we visited the city, brought down so suddenly at its height by an act of nature that still thunders down the two millennia that have passed since then, its sweep and its impact completely undiminished by time. Even now it is easy to remember the chill winds that billow down empty streets, the geometrically planned sections divided by excavated roads that would put most of Mumbai’s to shame, the haunting sense that many of the old residents might still be just that – resident! After all, none of them
got any closure! Nor does a single visit to Pompeii bring closure to the insatiable curiosity with which the world has generally regarded this wonderfully-preserved artifact of a time gone by. And hence it is wonderful that the NCPA has arranged a special screening of a film that takes viewers to the British Museum, where an exhibition titled Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum took people by storm this summer, attracting no less than 287,000 visitors. This, in spite of the fact that it was the third exhibition of its kind, but the first to be filmed. For the exhibition, 250 objects were flown to the British Museum from Naples and Pompeii, jewelry, medical instruments still in the remains of the original carrying case, marble reliefs, ivory panels, bronze busts, mosaics, a baby’s
crib that still rocks, cooking pots and drinking cups. Through the film, you can savour the exhibition itself, get a taste of the life of the people, not historical figures, just ordinary people enjoying ordinary lives of culture and some refinement till a mountain that had lain dormant for 800 years suddenly exploded. The nicest bit? Paul Roberts, the curator for the exhibition in London will be there as a guest speaker, which should make the whole thing even more interesting, not just for those who know but for the generally curious as well.
A very special meeting indeed
THE special general body meeting of civic representatives called by the mayor last Saturday ostensibly to discuss the tragic building collapse at Dockyard Road the
A sense of an ending
Sheru RIP, the greyhound whose end was in his beginning or vice versa, depending upon how you are tempted to see it!
A COLLEAGUE is currently both grieving at the death of a muchloved dog and marveling at the same time of how neatly his life came to an end on the day that it began, ten years ago! Sheru was ten years old, a grey hound who was exhibiting liver disorders for the past one month. He had been on medication and was being very carefully treated by his owner and the rest of the family. So on Saturday, since he had a birthday coming up, the family stayed up to bring it in. Nothing special, just a plain sponge cake but it was a happy time and Sheru seemed to enjoy it. Then he went to sleep and in the morning his owner found that it was the very long sleep from which there is no awakening. It’s one anniversary that the family is in no danger of forgetting.
previous day, in which 60 people died, was special indeed. For one thing, it went on interminably as all corporators sought to have their say on the functioning of the civic body with regard to its old, dilapidated buildings. Funnily enough, the officers present did not seem to be worried, one particular additional commissioner fiddling with his cell phone while the civic representatives wailed about the state of buildings generally and at least one of them actually broke down. Very little emerged from the meeting – and then, towards the end, the body passed the proposal made by young Aditya Thackeray to restore Mumbai’s nightlife. So easily! Of course it was the Shiv Sena that couldn’t wait to put its stamp on his words but it is interesting to note the priorities before the country’s richest corporation. That the general public itself is no longer particularly concerned over the lack of a nightlife in view of the rough law and order situation that prevails in Mumbai,

seems to concern our venerable civic body not a whit.
How does that work?
Ground Zero at Dockyard, where a building came down like a house of cards on Friday, is a marvel of focused determination coupled with a burning desire to shove skeletons back into their closets. We are still trying to do the math involved in loading up dumper trucks 543 times with debris and speeding the lot out of city limits. That too within two days flat! When our photographer went to recce the spot again on Sunday afternoon, it was clean except for a sole orange loader with its toothed shovel hanging out. That was all that was left of the lives of the families that lived in its 28 flats, hostages to a cruel fate that gave them little warning before the tragedy. That is, if you discount the innumerable warnings that should have been taken note of by the owner of the building and which were ignored. Azad Shrivastav | ADC
The car door opened, and out popped a royal family of sorts. Mary Kom, our Olympic boxing bronze medal winner, husband and main support Onler and Prince Chungthanglen, all of a few months old and still to grow into his name. At first, he was fine and gurgling, but then it all became too much for him, the mouth trembled into a pout and the wails began. But Mary was not abashed and quickly regained control of the situation. In and out of the ring, as she showed a packed Press Club yesterday, she’s a winner.

Passengers rushing from Kurla railway station to LTT are fleeced with alleged help from some policemen
By Tariq Khan
A
uto drivers plying between Kurla railway station and LTT terminus have a unique way of extorting money from their unsuspecting passengers. Initially, at Kurla these auto drivers entice passengers by promising to offer share auto facility only for Rs.10. But once they reach LTT, these rouge drivers force passengers to cough up Rs.50 instead. If anyone refuses, they threaten to take them to the police station. The hurried passengers end up paying Rs.50 instead of facing hassles at the police station. If a passenger gives Rs.500 note, these drivers return only Rs.50 instead of Rs.450 by saying that they had given Rs.100 only. On Sunday, Mehboob, a passenger took a share auto from Kurla east to reach LTT as he wanted to catch Jnyaneshwari Express at 6 pm that leaves for Kolkata. On reaching LTT, the driver demanded Rs.100 from him. When Mehboob refused to pay him, he was beaten by a wooden stick by this driver who also looted Rs.620 from the passenger and fled the spot. After the ordeal, Mehboob reached Nehru Nagar police station to lodge a police complaint. But the police discour-

Even though I was ready to catch another train and insisted on lodging the complaint, the police refused. I could not even note down the auto’s registration number as I was too disturbed by the incident”, said a dejected Mehboob. Locals allege that by using similar modus operandi, these auto drivers fleece unsuspecting passengers. “This
happens with the active connivance of police officials as they receive a cut from these rouge drivers. Passengers always face problems at LTT in one or other way. The auto drivers take advantage of harried passengers”, said a local on condition of anonymity. When ADC called DCP Lakhmi Gautam, he said that he was in a meeting. ADCP Qusar Khalid said he had no idea about it but assured that he would check with the concerned people and get back.
hen residents of the collapsed BMC building near Babu Genu market in Dockyard Road asked that the building be repaired because the structural audit had declared it as dilapidated, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation spent Rs.33.50 lakh on repairing its drainage system instead. The ill-fated structure housed 21 families of civic employees and was classified as C2, putting it in the list as a ‘dangerous building, part of which needed to be demolished.’ Exactly, 13 years ago, on Sept 20, 2000, the then councillor, Yashwant Jadhav, who represented Dockyard Road in the BMC, had requested the Municipal Commissioner through the Standing Committee to make a provision of Rs.50 lakh for repair of some parts of this building. Seven years later, Municipal Commissioner had replied to letter saying, ‘The BMC had already allocated Rs.20 lakh in 2005-06 and Rs.13.50 lakh during 200607 fiscal years.’ The Municipal Commissioner’s letter, dated February 28, 2007

The BMC letter confirming that Rs.33.50 lakh was already allocated for repairs of the ill-fated building. (copy of letter is with ADC), revealed that the civic body spent an estimated Rs.33.50 lakh of public money for repair and replacing of drainage pipelines instead of bolstering the ground plus four-storey building, which then collapsed last Friday, killing 61 people and leaving 30 injured. Former councillor Yashwant Jadhav who had earlier raised issue regarding the condition of the BMC building said, “Charges of culpable homicide should be registered against civic the officers for commission and
omission in this case. When they knew that the building is dilapidated and needed repair or redevelopment, they spent Rs.33.5 lakh on replacing of sewerage lines, wasting public money.” Additional Municipal Commissioner Rajiv Jalota admitted in the Corporation meeting that the file of this particular building was tossed from one table to another, “Administrative lapses have been found in this case, otherwise the catastrophe would have been averted.” vishnudas.sheshrao @afternoondc.in
Action against Nair docs 3 junior resident doctors suspended, 11 doctors face enquiries By A Staff Reporter
F
ollowing allegations from opposition parties that some medical staff had charged routine fees for treatment of victims of the Dockyard building crash, Mayor Sunil Prabhu had directed that an enquiry be initiated against those responsible for this at the Nair Hospital. It has now emerged that three junior resident doctors have been suspended, while 11 doctors face enquiry on the basis of an allegation made by opposition parties regarding a victim, Shweta Kamble, who reportedly had been charged for blood tests before her operation in the Nair Hospital. This happened in spite of the fact that the BMC had already committed that it would bear all the medical expenses of the victims.

Stirring up crowds outside the airport while alleging that the Cong was using the CBI to threaten him, Gujarat CM Narendra Modi roared that he would not be cowed down
By Prashant Hamine
A
ccusing the Congress led UPA government at Delhi of going berserk in its last days of power, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi alleged that the Congress was using the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) of trying to threaten him. Addressing a modest rally at the Santacruz domestic airport here yesterday after his arrival, the prime ministerial candidate remarked that SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and BSP chief Mayawati may have been cowed down by the threat of the CBI, but he would not succumb to such threats as he was made up of altogether different material. Terming the Congress-led UPA government as one of looters, he called upon the government to vacate the power as the peoples’ government was on its way to assume power. Modi stated that the Congress will not sit quiet and will even deploy the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Research and Analysis Wing
(RAW) against him. Addressing the delirious crowd of party supporters he said that the people will not have to suffer for too long now as the Congress-led government, which has been in power for the last 12 years, looted the people and that the BJP would usher in a government that will be committed to the welfare of the people. Referring to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, he said that he had come to the land of Shivaji Maharaj and hoped to be blessed so that he could not do anything wrong to the people. Coming out of the arrival lounge almost an hour late, at 5 pm, the crowds that swelled in large numbers blocked every possible entrance to the terminal 1A arrival concourse. Sardar Tarasingh, BJP MLA from Mulund, had roped in a Bhangra band ‘Jatt Boys’ who entertained the crowds for a while. Later a troupe of the Warkaris joined the crowd in welcoming Modi who was on his maiden visit to the city after being anointed as the prime ministerial candidate. Praful Patel, the cameraman, while speaking to ADC disclosed that TV crew like theirs was placed 24x7 at each district headquarters in Gujarat and followed him wherever he went. Even Patel could not believe the kind of response their chief minister was getting in Mumbai.
The entire concourse was jampacked, so was the elevated road leading to the departure deck above. After the rally was over, what was left behind was trail of broken trees, lost footwear, banners and buntings. prashant.hamine@afternoondc.in

The FIR was registered after the conclusion of the preliminary enquiry into the NSEL scam. “As the FIR was being registered, the EOW officials probing the scam had began carrying out massive raids at various NSEL offices, residences and warehouses situated across the country,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy. A special investigating team (SIT) had been formed to conduct a preliminary inquiry after the complaint by Saraf, the EOW official said, adding that, "A forensic audit was conducted after which fraudulent practices in the NSEL functioning had surfaced." "Forensic Auditing would be done again now to find out where the Rs.5,600 crore have been meticulously routed to by implementing fraudulent system in the privatelyowned NSEL," added Roy. As the probe also suggested largescale money laundering, the Central investigating agency, Enforcement Directorate (ED), will also be roped in to investigate the matter under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). neel.shah@afternoondc.in

Any kind of talk I better than no talk I
N just one hour, it would have been too much to expect that all the disputes between India and Pakistan would be resolved. What is important and significant is that the two leaders – Manmohan Singh and Nawaz Sharif, met and had some discussion on the need to end terrorism and stop violations of ceasefire along the LoC. A hopeful beginning is the decision for a meeting between the Indian and Pakistani commanders defusing tension. That Nawaaz Sharif accepted the demand of our prime minister and acted swiftly to implement ceasefire is a good sign. It is also possible that some of the violent operations by the ISI might temporarily end in Kashmir. It is also a good sign that the two prime ministers have invited each other and the visit is not for sight-seeing or for attending some cultural event, but obviously for talks. Pakistan is very much interested in boosting commercial ties and this is clearly seen from Sharif’s attempt to start a talk on the subject. Our PM however stuck to terrorism and LoC ceasefire and left a discussion on the subject for some other future occasion. In Pakistan and India, there is an opinion that final, purposeful peace talks can be held only after the 2014 General Elections. Nawaz Sharif also might decide to take up the peace talks only after the 2014 elections. He would naturally like to deal with the party that wins. And finally, it is to be seen what the Pakistani Army thinks about Sharif’s plan for peace: The army has made it quite clear that will consider peace talks only if and when Pakistan gets Kashmir.

HAVE been getting calls from the Pakistan media to inquire whether the army stalled the government from certain decisions or forced it to take some without its willingness. Their concern is understandable because the army is the boss in Pakistan and even Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who said the elected government would be superior, has to clear the agenda of close India-Pakistan relations with his army chief General Parvez Kayani. I have assured the Pakistan media that the situation in India is like the one prevailing in advanced countries in the West where voters are the arbiters. However, I can recall one example of the Armed Forces (Special) Powers Act which can kill anyone on suspicion without being arraigned. The government was inclined to modify the act after a commission’s recommendations. But the army had its way and the act stays without any amendment. Except for this, I have found the Indian army obedient to the elected government. It may be a cliché but the army is apolitical and takes pride in eschewing politics. There may be discussions in messes or canteens of the armed forces on the present conditions obtaining the country. But they are healthy and nothing beyond the ventilation of disgust.

He made it clear when he met her that he was proud to head such armed force which did not interfere in political affairs. “You do your job and allow me to do mine,” he was supposed to have told Indira Gandhi. The latest example, somewhat disturbing, is that of General V.K. Singh who retired recently as the army chief. He shared dais with the controversial Gujarat chief minister, Narendra Modi. I wish V.K. Farooq Abdullah, former chief minister, is so disturbed that he has demanded a CBI probe immediately. The constitution by V.K. Singh of a special cell for special purposes has also to be looked into. The defence ministry has issued a statement to assure that the matter is being pursued for “further action.” V.K. Singh was said to have been upset by the leakage of report against him by top army officials.
Democratic polity
The report is not yet in the public domain. But the charges are too serious to be left at that. The revelations make a mockery of the army’s function in a democratic polity. Covert operations are conducted all over the world. They should never see the light of the day and the officials engaged in them should keep quiet till their death and not even mention them in their memoirs. The military also needs to revise its rules of retirement so as to stop the former chiefs of the three services — army, air force and navy — are not able to join a political party for a decade after their retirement. Being in command they are bound to have earned enough fame to influence the voters. All this darkens the image of the army. This is not even a case of Bonapartism. I However, V.K. NaMo’s attack on PM totally unwarranted TRUE to expectations, the BJP’s PM-in-waiting, went ballistic against Dr. Manmohan Singh, selectively choosing all the uncharitable barbs and deliberately and consciously leaving out the favourable outcomes of his visit to the UN of which there were many. He only referred to the Pak PM allegedly calling Dr. Singh a “village woman”, a remark denied by many scribes, made an unsavoury comment about his being only a “sardar” and not an “asardar” (effective), spoke of Rahul taking “the turban off his head” and the like. He conveniently left out the rare gesture of the American President walking down with him to see him off, something highlighted by a 90-year old national daily, his assurance to bring India into the Security Council as a permanent member, his asking Pak to bring to book the culprits of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, etc. He had also ignored Dr. Singh’s forceful address to the UN stating categorically that Pakistan is the epicentre of terrorism. NaMo’s highly personalised attack on the soft-spoken PM is totally unwarranted and he should keep his electioneering at a decent, political level. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane
Reconstruct weak buildings THE Dockyard building collapse is the worst and which saw 61 people die and some of them injured and still in hospital. The BMC built buildings are in danger of collapsing and this time round rains were heavy and persistent unduly for a long time. Add to that, number of unauthorised alterations are which make the building so weak and that was the reason for the fall. Dilapidated buildings cause worry for inmates and when the building collapses, many people are killed, injured and displaced. The BMC has issued Public Notices through various news dailies asking the inmates of these buildings to evacuate buildings and look for alternative accommodation. This dilapidated condition of the buildings is causing concern and are not safe to stay. It is time to reconstruct these unsafe building or it may cause more disaster in future. UNFAIR: Narendra Modi’s tirade against PM Manmohan Singh only showed that he is trying to boost his own image as the PM-in-waiting. THIS is about the massive rally that Narendra Modi addressed in Delhi which gave a missive that Modi has come to stay and will rise like the proverbial phoenix in the political horizon despite some reported scurrilous remarks attributed to him which might have been taken out of context. His popularity can be gauged from the publicity that he is getting from the media which are displaying each and every rally of his live and are dissecting each statement and nuance made by him and connoting every hidden message that might accrue to the wada, Antop Hill, Kurla and Tilak Nagar. — Jayanthy. Prediction comes true SIX months ago I had told my friends jokingly, while travelling in local train between Bandra and Mahim station on west side, after seeing so many ‘zopadpattis’ that very soon the huts will go up to four stories high. Next morning, we saw I was right; the huts adjacent to the railway line on Bandra (west) side had risen up to the fourth floor. This area has become a major vote bank for political parties. Water connection, electricity and all other amenities have been provided. No monthly outgoings, no rent. Nobody is there to ask. These politicians have taken full advantage of these people. Today I tell my train friends that after a few months, don’t be surprise if you see ‘capsule lifts’ fitted in these huts and which will go upto sixth or seventh floors. — Yogesh R. Bhavasar, Dahisar

NARENDRA MODI, during the BJP Vikas rally analytically highlighted the various aspects of misgovernance by the Congress party and the PM’s inefficiency in confidently leading the Nation and providing the required thrust in handling the economy and his unimaginative shabby way of handling the Pak affairs thus leaving our borders vulnerable for easy entry by the Pak Army and terrorists, aimed at ambushing and killing the soldiers apart from frequenting violations of ceasefire. It is also becoming quite obvious to the public that Modi’s vociferous statements are not exaggerations and are very much in conformity with the PM’s lack of ability to address the problems of the people but seen to attach undue importance to attend UNGA meetings and hold dialogues with the US President while taking initiative to “talk” to Pak PM instead. Manmohan’s talks with Sharif useless THE talk between Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Washington was total failure and waste of time and money. Despite raising of many issues by Dr. Manmohan Singh including Mumbai terror attack and tension at the Line of Control (LoC) the Pakistani PM did not give any assurance to tackle it and on the contrary raise other unimportant and useless issues which has no relevance or important today. I strongly feel that looking at the response of the Pakistan administration who have been supported by ISI, terrorist groups and biased army, it seems that they do not want to improve the relationship with India and want to create more problems to destabilize India by supporting terrorist groups and firing from across the boarder

Bio-metric system to clock MBMC ‘late-comers’ leaves top officers, including DMCs, out of attendance ambit
By Suresh Golani
L
ate coming employees in the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) will now be marked absent and a day’s pay will be deducted from their monthly salary, as municipal commissioner, Suresh Kakani, has decided to revamp the civic body’s bio-metric attendance mechanism which has been lying defunct for the past several months. It should be noted that the MBMC, under its e-governance programme, had installed biometric attendance systems at the main administrative building, ward offices, local body tax office and Fire Brigade buildings, in the year
2010, to curb absenteeism and to discipline its staffers. Given the advantages of this system, the civic body’s administrative wing linked it with their attendance muster to work out salary payments on the basis of the system records. Initially, it was compulsory for all staffers, including high ranking officials, to register their finger impressions to mark their auto-
matic real time attendance, but gradually, two or three out of the seven machines mysteriously went ‘out-oforder’ and the MBMC reverted back to the old manual system. As authorities take manual attendance into consideration, habitual late comers can easily by-pass the system and escape detection. In a circular issued on Monday, the civic chief has directed immediate use of the biometrics technology to keep track of chronic late comers and absentees. Ironically, top officers, including the deputy municipal commissioners and the city engineers, have been kept out of the bio-metric attendance ambit.

eganism is taking vegetarianism a notch higher and making it several notches tougher. It includes abstaining from all animal products. While vegetarians also follow this, many still consume milk and dairy products. That is specifically what sets vegans apart from vegetarians — vegans also refrain from dairy products and other animal-derived substances (such as honey and silk). Ethical vegans not only follow a vegan diet, but are also opposed to the use of animals or animal products for any purpose. In India, though negligible, veganism is catching on. Several people in Mumbai have adopted this lifestyle and as a result, restaurants, eateries and bakeries have started offering scrumptious vegan food. We tell you all about veganism, whether it is healthy, how to make up for lost nutrients and whether the lifestyle choice is for you.
The vegan dieT What to eat & not to: When it comes to going vegan, people are often confused about what it means, what you can and what you cannot eat. Celebrity trainer Vinod Channa explains the concept of veganism perfectly. He says, “A vegan diet means avoiding anything which comes from animal sources. That means no eggs, meat, fish or even milk and dairy products.” So, if you decide to go vegan, what are the foods that you can eat and which ones do you need to avoid? Ruchi Bhatt, zonal head of Talwalkars National Nutrition Centre and Kasturi Padhye-Bhosle, nutritionist from Gold’s Gym, give us a list:
Foods you can eat l Fresh fruits and vegetables. l Green leafy vegetables. l Whole grain products such as cereal,
bread, pasta and brown rice. l Legumes and pulses. l Soy products such as tofu and tempeh.

healthy or not? Numerous people think that following a vegan diet means that you’ll be missing out on essential nutrients. And, this belief is not completely wrong — nutritionist Rashi Chowdhary explains, “Honestly, eliminating any food group will lead to deficiencies. There is a reason why food groups are made to begin with.” However, it is not following a vegan diet that leads to deficiencies, but

Numerous studies have shown that poor meal planning is the cause of nutritional deficiencies in vegetarian or vegan diets and not the absence of animal foods.” Still find it hard to believe veganism can actually be healthy? Rashi gives us a few examples of successful athletes who were vegans: Dave Scott, six-time Ironman World Champion; Tony Fiametta, National Football League (USA) player; and body-builder and mixed martial arts champ, Mike Mahler. She adds, “A carefully planned vegan diet can take your fitness to a whole new level.”

Several celebrities are vegans and in many instances, they have spoken about why they chose it. Some follow it for health purposes while some for their beliefs. Here are some vegan celebrities talking about it: “I was on a bus and a girl sees me blowing my nose. I had acne all over my face, which I’d had for years. And she’s like: ‘Hey, you’re lactose intolerant. If you quit dairy, all these symptoms you got will be gone in three days.’ I was 24 then. And I was like, ‘No way!’ But three days later — gone.” — Woody Harrelson told Esquire magazine that he became vegan when he was trying to become an actor
that you plan your diet properly, so that you don’t end up losing out on nutrients. Shalini Bhargava, fitness expert and founder of JG’s Fitness Center, gives us a list of important foods that you need to include in your diet: soy milk: Soy milk is healthy, easy to find and use. It has almost as much protein as milk but with less fat and no cholesterol. Also, since most soy milks are fortified, it is a comparable source of calcium. Vegans should make sure to find a brand that is fortified with vitamin B12. Soy milk is also an excellent dairy substitute for baking and to make buttermilk. Beans & legumes: Channa, rajma, moong and all kinds of dal are good sources of protein and iron. Quinoa: It has 18g of protein in one cup. is it for you?
Yes, if you have enough will power. Even for many vegetarians, adopting veganism is difficult because a huge portion of their diet includes dairy products and the vegan substitutes for dairy are, according to some vegetarians, not that appetising. On the dilemma of whether it is for you or not, Kasturi says, “Some people easily go from eating meat to veganism right away, while others struggle with their new commitment, or choose to go vegetarian first and then slowly omit eggs and dairy. There’s no right or wrong way to do it, but you may want to learn about what’s worked for other people. However, if you do adopt it, keep your goals in mind and remember why you are choosing to adopt a vegan diet.”

Drinking coffee or tea (with soy or almond milk, of course) with your meals can limit your absorption and so, caffeine should be consumed at least three hours before a meal. For an iron boost, eat tofu, lentils, spinach, soy, chickpeas and hummus. Vitamin C also increases the absorption of iron, so if you have an iron supplement, take it with orange or lime juice. Squeeze lemon on beans and legumes. Vitamin B12: Nutritional yeast is the best food source for B12, although miso and some kinds of seaweed contain a minimal amount as well. Although nutritional yeast is a great source and an incredibly tasty addition to just about everything, taking a vitamin supplement is still recommended. Do so at least once a week, even if you regularly consume nutritional yeast.

helps keep weight at bay, so make the fruit a regular snack. Apples prevent something known as metabolic syndrome, a disorder associated with abdominal fat and diabetes. Grapefruit contains antioxidants that reduce insulin levels and help speed up metabolism.

BAD
s clichéd as it may sound, the statement ‘too much of anything is bad,’ never fails to ring true. This theory also applies to healthy food. Health experts explain that the same way over-exercising can be harmful for your health, overeating healthy foods can also be detrimental for your wellbeing. When we have too much of anything good, it stops being good and starts becoming bad. Several people think that since we need to incorporate certain healthy food in our diet, including large amounts of them will make us healthier. This is a dangerous misconception. We tell you how too much healthy food can actually be bad for your health.
as adding green leafy vegetables to every meal), can be harmful for your health. Excess fibre can cause immediate bloating, abdominal cramps and gas. In the long run, it can interfere with the absorption of minerals such as iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus, leading to serious deficiencies in your body. How much is good: 25-35g or about five cups of fruits and/or vegetables a day.
Soya
Soya contains a lot of protein and zero cholesterol and so, people think that there’s nothing wrong with eating it in large quantities. However, excess consumption increases your risk of cancer, dementia, reproductive issues, osteoporosis and Fibre thyroid problems. Your body needs protein to repair and build muscle, but eating too much of it is not going to give you more than that. In fact, if a diet gives you more than 30% protein of your daily calorie intake, a build up of toxic ketones in the body may occur, causing your kidneys to go into overdrive in an attempt to flush them out. This may lead to a significant loss of water and calcium, causing dehydration and bone loss. Symptoms include weakness or dizziness, dry skin, hairfall, loss of appetite, nausea and bad breath. In the long run, this may strain your kidneys, stretch out your liver and put stress on your heart. Your body can handle only 4-5g of protein per hour. So, a protein bar or shake which gives you 50g of protein, takes about 10 hours to digest and absorb, straining your digestive system. How much is good: Most people need about 50-70g of protein a day. Here are some measures: approximately 200g of chicken or fish or 150g of mutton provides 40g of protein, 1 egg provides 5g of protein and 250-500ml of milk provides 9-18g of protein.
Water Water is healthy for you and very important for your body. But, consuming too much water can increase your total blood volume and place an unnecessary burden on your heart and blood vessels. It can also lead to a rare and fatal condition called hyponatraemia, in which your salt levels drop and your brain swells. The signals of an overdose of water are headaches, fatigue, nausea, frequent urination and mental disorientation. How much is good: You will not suffer from water intoxication as long as you drink water at regular intervals instead of all in one go. Generally, you should drink 8-10 glasses of water in a day, but if it is a hot day, you can drink more.
Celery is made up of a lot of undigestible cellulose, so including it in your meals will help you eat less. Top off your meal with some broccoli, because it contains calcium and vitamin C, which boosts metabolism.
Cinnamon: This spice is not only delicious; it
is also a natural blood sugar stabiliser. This means that it helps level out blood sugar and keeps your metabolism working fine.
Dark CHoColate: Go ahead, eat that
piece of dark chocolate. Stress slows down your metabolism and dark chocolate reduces stress. You see the connection there, right?
Hot PePPerS: Anything spicy will speed up
your metabolism. Add chili, peppers or cayenne to your meals and your metabolism will stay boosted for up to three hours.
avoCaDo: Have it plain, chop it up in a salad
or mix it in your meal, but don’t skip out on this fibre packed fruit. Any calories that it includes come from monosaturated fats. These fats actually help control your metabolic rate.
almonDS: Wondering what to snack on
mid-morning? Try almonds. Like avocados, they contain good fats that increase insulin levels and also make you feel full, so you don’t feel hungry between meals.
lean meatS & FiSH: You don’t have to
stick to vegetables and fruits to speed up your metabolism. Lean protein such as meat and fish can prevent you from gaining weight too. You will lose fat not muscle and be able to boost metabolism on a long term basis, while keeping your energy levels up at the same time.
oatS: Oats have sugar content, but they keep
your insulin levels low. This means that you burn calories, which helps control your metabolism.

Sometimes, crowded bars and clubs may be dirty because of rowdy guests, but at most places, if they can’t keep the bathroom clean, they’re not being too particular about the hygiene anywhere else either.

This change in nail health could indicate a number of health problems such as heart disease, renal failure, liver cirrhosis, pulmonary tuberculosis, diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis. 2. terry’s nails: Your nail will look mostly white and grainy, with a pink or red strip at the top because of an increase in connective tissue and a decrease of blood supply in the nail bed. Warning signs
Pain is your body’s way of letting you know that there’s something wrong. But, most of the time, we just ignore the discomfort, don’t we? Dev Goswami tells you how disregarding six types of pain can have dangerous consequences
W
ith our busy lives, it is not uncommon to overlook a slight pain in your chest or minor throbbing in your head. At the most, we pop a painkiller and go about our lives presuming that sooner or later, the pain will subside on its own. But, not only is this the wrong thing to do as far as keeping you healthy is concerned, ignoring persistent pain can sometimes be fatal. That’s why, we’re going to tell you about six types of pain that you should never ever disregard. If you experience any of these aches and pains, head to your doctor immediately and get yourself examined thoroughly.
>> Chest pain is no laughing matter. Make sure you visit your doctor if you experience even a mild pain in your chest
BaCk pain This is the most common type of pain and almost everyone suffers from it occasionally. So, it can get quite tricky to know when you can ignore it and when you need to get medical attention. Quite obviously, back pain which refuses to go away is a big concern. Also, if you’ve been suffering from moderate to severe back pain that lasts for about two weeks, you need to get it checked. When your back pain is accompanied by numbness or weakness in your legs, you shouldn’t ignore it. Finally, in cases of back pain with bowel or bladder dysfunction, seek medical care immediately.
Chest pains Your chest is where your heart lies — one of the two most important organs of your body. So, it’s hardly surprising that even the slightest feeling of discomfort in your chest shouldn’t be ignored. Of course, not all kinds of chest pains are serious — for example, if you feel pain after your workout and can actually touch the muscle that is hurting, it’s a normal muscle ache. But, when it comes to chest pain, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
severe heaDaChes Another common health problem, headaches are often overlooked. But, intense, severe headaches should not be taken lightly and you should visit a doctor. A headache that you feel is the ‘worst headache of your life,’ is a serious concern and it could possibly be a sign of brain tumour or cerebral haemorrhage.
Digestive issues
painful urination There are no conditions or any if’s when it comes to this situation. This is a pretty straightforward scenario — if it hurts when
leg pain We are not talking about the soreness you feel after a day of physical overexertion — that is normal and will subside in a day or two. What we are talking about is pain that comes on suddenly and is extremely sharp or severe. The most worrisome is when the pain is accompanied by swelling or tenderness in one leg, indicating the formation of a blood clot. Leg pain could also be a sign of problems in your lower back. Also, any pain that hampers movement, even in the slightest way, should be checked by a physician.

Issues related to your stomach are usually put on the back burner with the thought that it must be something you ate. While most digestive issues are no cause for alarm and easy to deal with on your own, severe pain in your abdominal region is a serious concern and could point to conditions such as appendicitis, gallbladder disease, stomach or bowel disorders or pancreatitis. So, if you experience severe abdominal pain, visit a doctor.
you urinate, you need to visit a doctor. If the pain is coupled with blood in your urine, fever or back pain, you need to get immediate medical attention. This is often a sign of urinary tract infection in women and could also indicate kidney or bladder stones.

H
ave you ever woken up in the middle of the night to pull your blanket closer because of the cold, or throw it off because of the heat? Chances are your room is not at an ideal temperature and that is affecting your sleep. Professors at Stanford University believe that temperature can actually affect the quality of your sleep, how long you can sleep undisturbed and how fast you’re able to fall asleep. When it’s too hot or too cold, your body struggles to achieve something that is known as a set point and is uncomfortably and subconsciously attempting to achieve that. The temperature of your bedroom also affects the quality of rapid eye movement sleep (REM) so it also affects how you dream.
the iDeal temperature We can’t offer you a solid solution, because recommending a specific temperature for you to sleep soundly is a personal preference. You need to find a temperature that’s comfortable for your body. The best way to do this is to sleep at different temperatures every day of the week and record on which night you sleep the best.

Change them often to keep heat from getting trapped. Banish extra pillows as they absorb heat, making it hard for you to sleep comfortably after a certain point at night. If your family members keep the room a little too cold for comfort, the easiest thing to do is bundle yourself up in warm nightclothes and wear socks. Socks are important as cold feet can disrupt your sleep patterns more than anything else, so make sure your feet feel the warmest at night.

SNEAK PEEK you Get fanGs
The old saying of “getting long in the tooth” has some truth to it. Similar to how our skin loses its elasticity and plumpness as we age, our gums lose bulk too. This causes our gums to shrink back and this recession can increase the length of our teeth by up to a quarter of an inch! So, it’s important to take care of your gums, because gum disease can aggravate this condition. Regular brushing and flossing is must, but make sure you’re not overzealous with your brushing as that can lead to you harming your gum tissue.
men Get hiGh As men start to age, their voices get pitchy and increase in tone. This is because cartilage starts to fray and this causes joints between the pieces of cartilage in the vocal cords to become unstable. The vocal cords produce sound when they clash against each other and these changes cause a man’s voice to become high pitched.
women Go low Wonder why women begin to sound sexier as they get older? In women, the hormone estrogen protects the cartilage. However, after the menopause, the lack of this hormone can cause swelling in the vocal cords, making your voice sound lower. You can avoid this change by protecting your cords — that means no shouting and sitting properly because slumping changes the position of your vocal tract.

Wonder why all the old aunties and uncles carry a handkerchief with them? As people get older, they tend to develop allergic
reactions to pollen and other similar substances. This is characterised by sneezing, a constantly runny nose, itchy, streaming eyes and a prickly throat that just won’t clear. At least four million people aged between 45 and 65 suffer from this problem. Even pollution aggravates the issue.
warts that? One of the yuckier bits about getting older is that you’re prone to getting more warts (you can pretend they are beauty spots, we won’t tell!). Known as seborrhoeic keratoses or senile warts, these are common, harmless, often pigmented growths on the skin — though they can sometimes become itchy and inflamed. However, if they change in size, keep growing or become inflamed, you need to pay your doctor a visit.
hiGh flyinG Perhaps you could outdrink a fish in your 20s, but as you get older, you might find that you’re getting tipsy much more easily. This is because of the changes in your liver. As we get older, the rate at which the liver metabolises or breaks down alcohol slows down. It also takes longer for your kidneys to excrete broken down alcohol from your body. Due to this, alcohol stays in your system for longer, so it takes less time to feel its effects. Hic!
Cry BaBy As you age, you’re more likely to suffer from watery eyes. This is because our tear ducts tend to become narrower every passing year. Since ducts act as a drainage mechanism, tears overflow onto the face rather than draining away. However, this condition usually corrects itself after a few weeks.

Dear Barbara, I have a strange problem. Every time I apply lip gloss, a white film forms on my lips. I can’t go out without a little colour since my lips are really pale, but the white film has made me self-conscious to step outside with it on too. I’ve tried changing my lip gloss brand, but it doesn’t make a difference. What should I do? — akriti shah, Ghatkopar Dear akriti, The white film that appears after you apply lip gloss forms because your lips are dry and flaky. The particles from your dry skin get trapped in the creases of your chapped lips, which means that
when you apply lip gloss it creates a white coating. Make sure you exfoliate your lips before you apply gloss. Also, run a cotton swab along the inside of your lips to remove the white film before applying gloss. Apply lip balm regularly and avoid biting or plucking at your lips to make sure the problem doesn’t re-occur. Dear Barbara, When I step out into the sun, I get uncomfortable red patches on my skin. They’re similar to sunburn and are painful, but they occur even if I apply sunscreen and even when I step out for just a little while. Sometimes, I even get

ANCHI/PATNA: RJD Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav will appeal in the Jharkhand High Court against his conviction in a fodder scam case, his family said on Monday and alleged he had fallen victim to ‘conspiracy’ by his rivals. “We’ll appeal in the High Court. We have full faith in the judiciary,” Prasad’s son Tejeswi Yadav told PTI in Ranchi. “It’s a conspiracy and we’ll also go to the people’s court and answer those elements, who have targeted our leader, in the upcoming election,” he said. In Patna, Prasad’s wife and former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi said they do not accept him as guilty and she and her son would run the party in his absence “as Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are guiding the Congress”. “We do not accept him (Prasad) as guilty,” Rabri, who remained inside her official residence at 10 Circular Road in the Bihar capital throughout the day told a section of the media a little after after the CBI court at Ranchi delivered its verdict. The gates of her residence, which is only a stone’s throw from that of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, were closed since morning and the house wore a deserted look. “We will go to ‘janata ki adalat’ (people’s court) to seek justice for

But did they find any money earned out of fodder scam? “Does a chief minister draw any money from treasury? Is it not done by officials? ... A chief minister gets the budget passed in the assembly and does not himself withdraw from the treasury,” said Rabri Devi, who had replaced Prasad as CM in 1997 when he relinquished the post before going to jail in the fodder scam case.

EW DELHI: Welcoming the judgement against RJD Chief Lalu Prasad in the fodder scam, BJP today said Bihar Chief Minister and former NDA ally Nitish Kumar could face the same fate as a PIL is pending in the high court against him in a related case involving Rs 900 crore. BJP General Secretary Rajiv Pratap Rudy said while two former Bihar Chief Ministers — Lalu Prasad and Jagannath Mishra —
have been found guilty on Monday by a special CBI court, a third chief minister may soon find himself in the dock. “A Public Interest Litigation was filed in a Rs.900 crore (animal husbandry department) scam in the Jharkhand High Court in which a third chief minister may be indicted,” Rudy said, regretting that a series of chief ministers from Bihar have faced corruption charges.
BJP demands Shinde’s sacking N
EW DELHI: BJP on Monday demanded that Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde be sacked immediately for asking chief ministers to ensure that no innocent Muslim is detained or questioned, saying he is attempting to divide the country on communal lines. “If Shinde had issued the letter without associating the religion of the person it would not have been an issue. Had he used the word Indian- of any religion- then it would have been better. Shinde should be sacked with immediate effect for dividing the country on communal lines,” BJP General Secretary Rajiv Pratap Rudy told PTI. He said when his party flags such sensitive issues its secular credentials are challenged but what
Shinde has done is communally divisive. Hitting out at Shinde, he said he is either ignorant or has forgotten the Constitution and asked him to recall his oath of office in which one takes the pledge of serving without any bias to any religion, caste or creed. “It would have been fair to the country at large if he had not mentioned one particular religion in his letter,” Rudy said. Shinde had said in his letter to chief ministers that no innocent Muslim should be wrongfully detained or arrested in the name of terror. Senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu alleged that Shinde has written this letter for votebank politics and keeping the forthcoming elections in mind.

Delhiites to get a taste of Munich’s ‘Oktoberfest’ N
EW DELHI: The German Embassy is gearing up to celebrate the German Unity Day on October 3 in a grand manner with an aim to give people here a taste of the ‘Oktoberfest’ organised annually in Munich on the occasion. “This year we will celebrate the German Unity day in the form of an ‘Oktoberfest’. We will keep the originality of the festival intact. Indians don’t want to see a diluted version,” said German Ambassador Michael Steiner in a media briefing here on Monday. German Unity Day on October 3
‘Oktoberfest’ is a major carnival held in Munich every year which is attended by over 6 million people including Indians. While briefing the media, Steiner took a round of the lush-green lawn inside the Embassy with the reporters where the celebration will take place on Thursday to mark the anniversary of the Germany’s unification. The lawn had a 10-metre high tree known as ‘Guild Tree’ showing different professions people engage in Bavaria and both the German and the Indian flag were
displayed on it. For the guests, an automated-machine serving drinks was arranged which, Steiner said, was produced in Germany and brought specially for the occasion. The food which will be served to the guests is all Bavarian cuisine. “There were certain cuisines which were a challenge for us to make in India given it’s humid weather. But ultimately we could make all of it,” he said. “Around 1,500 guests are expected which include students and people from the art world too,” said Steiner.

Emkay calls a ‘Buy’ on Infosys CMP: Rs. 3015
Target Rs. 3650
Focus on improving revenue growth and cost optimization should start yielding course correction beginning H2FY14: In recent interactions with street/investors, Infosys management has clearly indicated the intention to address the issue over FY11-13 both through a focus on: 1) improving the revenue growth trajectory (note that the company’s revenue growth of <16% and 6% in FY12 and FY13, respectively, was lower than that of the industry and peers), and 2) cost optimization (improving utilization both onsite and offshore, aligning onsite costs with project/market requirements, more location optimization, etc.). In our view, an improvement in the overall demand environment and an uptick in discretionary spending, coupled with a greater focus on the “bread and butter’ business and IT services (63% of revenues in FY13), will drive improvement in revenue growth trajectory going forward. Several levers to pull up margins ahead; ‘Reversion to mean’ margins possible? Infosys’ EBITDA margins slipped by around 700bps since the December’11 quarter to 26.5% in the June’13 quarter, despite 10% currency depreciation during the period. The company has clearly indicated its focus on cost optimization through: 1) improvement in utilization (both onsite and offshore; its utilization ex-trainees increased by around 300bps sequentially to 74.3%), and 2) aligning onsite costs with project/market requirements (its per capita onsite technical staff cost rose by around 25% over Dec’09Dec’12). The company itself has indicated that the positive results from cost optimization will be the first to reflect with its focus on enhancing delivery effectiveness (initiative spearheaded by Dr. Rohan Murthy under the chairman’s office), aiding margin performance over the medium-to-longer term. In our view, Infosys’ initiatives have a possibility to help improve margins by 400-600bps at steady state and thereby we see upsides to our EBITDA margin assumptions of 27%, 27.8% and 28.1% for FY14E, 15E and 16E, respectively. Continue to back move to ‘PSPD’ mode of execution, BUY at TP of Rs 3,650 stays: We upgraded Infosys to BUY in June’13, and view the company’s initiatives being the right steps in restoring the predictability and consistency that was akin to Infosys for long before the series of mishaps through FY1113. We expect the company to return to its ‘PSPD’ mode of execution that has been its hallmark through most of the past decade. Infosys remains our toppick in the Tier-I space. BUY stays with an unchanged TP of Rs 3,650, which is based on ~17x FY15 and 15x FY16E earnings.

T
o promote self-sufficiency in the urea production and to reduce the subsidy burden, the Government has been encouraging investments in the urea sector for domestic capacity addition in urea production through the New Urea Investment policy (NUIP) and has also mandated that companies which are using liquid fuel as feedstock to change their feedstock base to gas under New Pricing scheme-III (NPS-III). The ultimate rationale behind the implementation of these schemes was to reduce the subsidy burden.
However, the incremental requirement of gas is not likely to be met through domestically produced gas due to insufficient production and the GoI’s intention to use additional gas available through exploration in near to medium term for the power sector. Hence, the additional requirements of gas has to be met through imported regassified liquefied natural gas (R-LNG), the high price of which has already put the viability of feedstock conversion project (NPS-III) under question. The current low IPP of urea gives incentive to import urea in comparison to its domestic production with imported R-LNG as feedstock. Fur-
The demand for urea has been growing steadily at the CAGR of approximately 5% from 2005-06 and stood at approximately 32 million metric tonnes in 2012-13 (refers to the period April 01 to March 31). However the domestic production capacity has largely remained stagnant during the past 13 years due to feedstock constraints and policy uncertainties regarding capacity additions of urea, and stood at around 23 MMTPA in 2012-13. The incremental demand over the years has been met through imports.
ther, the IPP of urea is likely to remain moderate in near to medium term on account of significant projected capacity addition worldwide. Hence, says CARE Ratings in a report on the sector, “the comparative subsidy burden on the government, with domestic production as compared to imports, is likely to increase significantly in near to medium term due to passthrough nature of feedstock cost under both the schemes. “The high R-LNG price and likely implementation of all feedstock conversion projects in the current financial year is likely to increase the subsidy burden on the GoI and also pose threat to the adequacy of fertilizer subsidy budget for the current financial year. As a result, the working capital requirements of urea manufacturing companies would increase with a concomitant increase in short-term borrowings and dent in their profits and cash accruals due to higher interest costs.

Perseus-the demigod son of Zeus-is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10year old son, Helius. Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity’s lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous underworld. he Raykar Academy of Violin is an institution set up by ace violinist Milind Raykar. It appears that Goans take to instrumental music like the fish taking to water. Perhaps it is due to the influence of the Portugese. The late Shridhar Parsekar who died prematurely in the early 1960s was known for his phenomenal command on the instrument. Milind Raykar belongs to Goa. Like his fellow Goans, Milind is also an accomplished violinist and a frontranking pupil of the renowned violinist D.K. Datar .Milind hails from Porvorim in Goa and has been living in Mumbai as a violinist for the last 30 years. We have seen

s a tribute to celebrated Odissi danseuse Sanjukta Panigrahi and Odissi maestro Ragunath Panigrahi, Smitalay presented a unique programme of Odissi dances in which some of the past and present exponents who have branched away from Smitalay performed traditional compositions with involvement and elegance at the Sathaye College auditorium in Vile Parle. The programme commenced with the invocation Shruta Kamala in praise of Lord Jagannath, the presiding deity of Odissi dance, which was performed well by Sanathan Chakravarthy. The Oriya composition ‘Nachanti Range Srihari’ describing the joy of dance with Lord Krishna and the gopis was performed by a young dancer from Smitalay, Sumed Pawar, with precision and elegance. Another male dancer who created a lasting impression

He has set up this academy to teach violin to the young generation. His academy is doing very well and many youngsters are learning the violin with keen interest. Raykar has instituted an award in the name of his mentor. The award is given to a senior violinist every year.

In spite of being bearded, Ankur succeeded in revealing the love and the pretentious anger of Radha as Krishna obstructs her way in the number ‘Patha Chadi Do’, sung well by young singer Jatin Sahu. Surprisingly, male dancers dominated the programme despite Odissi being well known for its feminine charm, beauty and lyrical

The highlight of the programme though, was when accomplished Odissi exponent and the founder of Smitalay, Jhelum Paranjpe, performed the popular astapadi by Jayadeva ‘Dheera Sameere Yamuna Teere’ where Lord Krishna is anxiously waiting at the banks of the river Yamuna to meet Radha. Radha's sakhi tells her to go at once without any further delay as her Lord is waiting. This number was

Two violin teachers Baliram Patange and Bhalchandra Dev - were also felicitated. A birthday tribute programme to playback singer Lata Mangeshkar was organised by Sargam at Vile Parle Mahila Sangh on Sunday. The venue overflowed with the fans of Lata. The title of the programme was ‘Lata and Raagdari’. Various ragas were demonstrated and songs based on them were played. ‘Mohe Bhool Gaye Sawariya’ from ‘Baiju Bawara’ was based on the Raga Kalingada. The famous ‘Nagin’ song ‘Jadugar Saiyan’ was based on the Raga Brindavani Sarang. The huge audience enjoyed every moment of the programme and there was a thunderous applause after each song as well as demonstration. A worthy tribute to the great playback singer!

It was a pleasure to watch one of the senior disciples of Jhelum Pranjape, Mitali Raul perform the ashtapadi ‘Kuruyadu’ that establishes the intimate relationship with Radha and Krishna. Mitali performed this number with subtle grace and expressions. The piece-deresistance of the evening, noteworthy for the dramatic quality and the devotion of the Muslim poet Salbeg who suffered from leprosy but would not deter from his devotion to Lord Jagannath, was performed by Dipali Tikam. Dipali succeeded in the dramatic portrayal of the episodes of Gajendra Moksham, Draupadi Vastraharanam and Prahlada Charitram. On the whole, the entire programme was a fine tribute.
ical machinations by making Gangubai the CM and then follows a full on comedy with some emotions too. Gangubai then exposes the politicians and becomes a spokeswoman for the public. Deshpande has written and directed the film well and utilised the star status of Nirmitee Sawant well along with Pandharinath Kamble who does well too. But one can’t help wondering if the story is lifted from Irving Wallace’s Second Lady or the Hollywood film Dave. Anand Ingle, Atul Todankar, Nagesh Bhosle, Amita Khopkar have provided good support. The film is technically alright. The music is okay. The film is basically for comedy lovers.

SACA pleads for early end to India tour speculation OHANNESBURG: The South African Association has called on the JBCCICricketers and the CSA to urgently work out the
itinerary for the upcoming tour by India, saying that the continuing delay is “worrying and frustrating” for the players. SACA CEO Tony Irish said the series is the highlight of the South African home schedule this summer and should be sorted out quickly. “This is the main tour of the summer and has a massive financial implication on cricket. We are about six weeks away from it and to have it all up in the air is really worrying and frustrating,” Irish told ‘ESPN Cricinfo’. “The players want to see it sorted out. Until yesterday, CSA did not know who they were dealing with at the BCCI because they had not had their election but now that that is sorted it, they need to do whatever it takes to get the discussion going,” he added, referring to yesterday’s BCCI AGM where N Srinivasan returned as Board President. Irish said the financial aspect aside, the players’ concerns should also be taken into account by the two Boards. “The players are stakeholders in the game and will be affected by whatever happens,” he said. “It’s not just a financial thing, it’s also about the opportunity to play in in a highprofile Test series and substantial limited-overs competitions,” he added. World number one South Africa has not played a match since February. “This is the best Test team we have ever had and it’s a very settled unit. They need to be playing in order to keep that momentum,” Irish went on to say in the course of a talk.

East Bengal secretary Kalyan Majumdar told PTI that one player — Robert Lalthlamuana — was also made to wait for more than two hours as his visa-on-arrival was not in order at the Kuwait City Airport. “Even the players were not given enough water at their team hotel in Kuwait City. This is unacceptable,” Majumdar said from Kolkata. “How can a coach chalk out strategy without the captain and another key defender (Mondal)? They (the three players) will be able to join team practice for just one day before the match. They (Kuwait SC) wanted our team unity to be affected so that they can take advantage of,” he said. “We have already made a formal complaint to the AFC that what Kuwait SC had done was not acceptable and we have suffered due to all these,” he added. Majumdar accused the Kuwaiti side of “playing games” to unsettle the Red-andGold outfit. “This is all part of the game on the part of Kuwait SC. They are playing games so that these things may impact on our preparations,” he added.
UWAIT CITY: Seeking to become the first Indian football club to qualify for the AFC Cup final, the unbeaten East Bengal are all set for their toughest assignment so far when they take on defending champions Kuwait SC in the first-leg semifinals here tomorrow. East Bengal are the only unbeaten team among the four semifinalists, but Marcos Falopa’s side would face its toughest test of the campaign in Kuwait SC, The Kolkata side is without its who have played in Asia’s top tier competition AFC Champions Japanese midfielder Ryuji Sueoka League besides winning the AFC who was injured during the quarterfinal away match against InCup twice.
donesian side Semen Padang, but all the other players are fit for the match. They are also a lot relieved after captain Mehtab Hossain, defender Arnab Mondal and Gurwinder Singh landed in Kuwait City after a day’s delay due to late sending of their visas by Kuwait SC authorities. Luckily, East Bengal are also playing away in the first leg and coach Falopa had said before departure from Kolkata that his team would be looking for a tactical game in Kuwait. Playing the second leg at home would allow East Bengal to know the target to be achieved. “I am looking forward to a tac-
tical game in Kuwait and I am happy that we are playing the first leg away from home. Playing the second leg at home would give you a clear picture what is your target to be achieved,” he had said. Gurpreet Singh Sandhu is expected to start tomorrow under the bar despite the horrendous mistake that let Semen Padang take the lead at home in the quarterfinals. India international Arnab Mondal is expected to start alongside Uga Okpara at central defence while Saumik Dey should man the left back position.
Davis Cup captain Anand Amritraj assures “smooth sailing” By Amanpreet Singh
N
EW DELHI: Newly-appointed Davis Cup captain Anand Amritraj is confident that it will be “smooth sailing” for the Indian team in 2014 as the players’ revolt was thing of the past but he wants to have a say in the decision-making process for taking the team back to the elite World Group. AITA roped in Anand as the non-playing captain in place of S P Misra after top players revolted for better playing conditions and demanded a change in the support staff. “2014 will be different than this year as there were some problems. I think next year would be smooth since the players have got what they wanted, it will be smooth sailing,” Amritraj told PTI from Los Angeles in an exclusive
interview after being appointed India’s non-playing captain. “I am hoping I will be part of the selection process and my input makes a difference. We have to pick the best team. We have to pick the team on ranking as well as on current form, that would be the criteria. Personally, I am concerned with singles and not the doubles, because we have to win two singles,” he added. Amritraj, who along with his brother Vijay was part of many memorable Davis Cup wins for India in the past, said captaining India was his long-time dream. “I was always interested in being captain, say for the last 10 years. When they (AITA) first spoke to me in 2002, it did not happen. I am very happy and thrilled to be captain. I thank the AITA and the players for this honour and privilege of making me
the captain,” he said. Amritraj said his focus will be on singles even as there will be a selection headache because of presence of lot of good doubles players. “I will have a word with AITA selection committee. It’s a tough choice, we have three great doubles players but we have only two slots. Rohan (Bopanna) has played unbelievable, he became
world number three. It is hard to leave Rohan. Leander won the US Open. Then Mahesh is also there, so doubles is not a problem. We should focus on singles.” Amritraj said since he shares a very good rapport with the Indian youngsters, there was no doubt about his acceptance but refused to give a direct opinion on the revolt, which shook the Indian tennis early this. The players had boycotted the tie against Korea, forcing AITA to field a depleted side, which lost 14 to the visitors. “The players felt that they needed to do it. But they came back and played the second tie against Indonesia that was good. It’s hard to say whether it was right thing or wrong. They felt they needed to do that and stuck together, I can’t comment on that,” he said.

HENNAI: In-form senior batsman Yuvraj Singh was recalled but pacer Umesh Yadav was dropped from the 15member Indian cricket team announced today for the first Twenty20 International and three ODIs against Australia starting October 10 in Rajkot. Yuvraj, who last played for India against England in an ODI in Dharamsala last January, was recalled after a string of fantastic scores for India A against West Indies A and a solid display for India Blue in the recently-concluded NKP Salve Challenger Series. Yuvraj scored 337 runs in five List A matches at an average of 67.40 with a highest score of 123 against the touring Caribbean side. He also scored a quickfire 52 against West Indies A in a T20 game in Bangalore. With his more than useful leftarm spin as back-up, Yuvraj is certain to play an important role in that Indian bowling line-up in the middle overs. Yuvraj replaced Dinesh Karthik, who didn’t do much since his comeback save a lone half century in the Champions Trophy. Opener Murali Vijay, who hasn’t set the limited overs stage on fire was also dropped from the squad announced by the selection committee headed by Sandeep Patil.
One of the notable exclusions was pacer Umesh Yadav, who didn’t do his case a world of good by performing poorly in the Challenger Series giving away 67 runs in 10 overs and a whopping 85 runs in 9 overs respectively in the two matches he played for India Red. Bengal speedster Mohammed Shami, seasoned Karnataka seamer Ranganath Vinay Kumar and promising Saurashtra leftarm seamer Jaydev Unadkat were retained from the pace attack that played its last international series in Zimbabwe. Haryana paceman Mohit Sharma was dropped from the squad while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ishant Sharma made a comeback after well deserved rest. Bhuvneshwar bowled India Blue to Challenger Series triumph with a four-wicket haul in the final. Young Jammu and Kashmir allrounder Perveez Rasool made way for senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin while Amit Mishra held on to his place in the squad having taken 18 wickets in the last series against Zimbabwe. The reserve batsman’s place in the squad was a battle between Ambati Rayudu and Ajinkya Rahane with very little to choose between them. In the end, Rayudu who now plays for Baroda in Ranji Trophy, got the nod ahead of the Mumbaikar.
According to a reliable source, the names of senior pros Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir did not even come up for discussion but the selectors will
be keenly following their performance in the four-day match against the West Indies A in Hubli, Karnataka from Wednesday.
