A
shootout between members of rival gangs at a bar in Khar on Wednesday night saw a historysheeter getting shot dead. Another gangster suffered serious injuries and is recuperating in a civic-run hospital. Police fear that this could signal the beginning of bloody gangwars. The deceased was identified as gang leader Vijay Pujari alias Batta (39), who was with his friends and gang members, Chandan Singh, Lokesh and Kamlesh, at the Sharada Restaurant and Bar. While they were enjoying themselves, the main accused, Rahul Sharma (22), accompanied by Ajay Pandit, Magic, Viren Thakur, Subhash Shukla and an unknown person, opened fired on Batta and then
stabbed him several times with a chopper. They all then calmly walked away from the scene and are still untraceable, said the police. The deceased, Vijay According to Pujari alias Batta sources, Batta had recently started his own gang and had wanted to rise quickly. He brazenly started extorting money from garment manufacturers and from contractors at various construction sites. A source from Nirmal Nagar police station said that a few months ago, Batta had attacked prime accused Sharma in the Golibar area badly injuring him. Sharma operated his family-
run dairy business there, and Batta lived just behind this dairy. Batta had recently assaulted another accused in the case, Magic, and the rivalry started from that time onwards. Khar area is the fiefdom of Hemant Pujari, an aide of Chhota Rajan, and Batta was warned by Pujari some months ago against cutting into the territory but he did not heed the warning. A source said Batta fearlessly roamed around in the area without any protection. The source also added that there was fear in the minds of people that Batta had a hold in the local police station and cops would not take their complaints seriously. Therefore, the rival gang made plans to kill Batta. On Wednesday afternoon, Continued on pg 6 «

For citizens without smartphones or internet connections, IPAB is launching an SMS service where bribe reports can be shared by sending a message IPAB <report> to 56363. The site also encourages people to report instances where their work got done without paying a bribe. It also has a section which details various government procedures on how to get a driving license, how to get a passport etc, making citizens aware of correct procedures and thus being able to resist the bribe demand. I Paid a Bribe (www.ipaidabribe.com) has resulted in over 2.5 million visits, 22,000 reports and 12 similar sites in countries like Pakistan, Greece, Kenya and Zimbabwe. he Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) established by the state government to raise awareness and improve coordination for organ donations, has failed to coordinate between hospitals, patients and infrastructure network, to develop mechanisms to retrieve organs from brain dead patients, despite the willingness of patients’ family. Consequently, both the families of ‘would be donors’ and ‘would be receivers’ suffer a painful loss and the gap between donor and receiver is increasing in the city as well as state. Maharashtra has a heritage and a long history of advanced medical practices for the last two centuries. Even now in medical practice, the state is ahead compared to other states, yet grossly behind in organ donation due to the lethargic attitude of the state public heath department and the ZTCC, say experts. After becoming aware through experience and word of mouth publicity about organ donation, a few families of brain dead patients have themselves come forward to donate organs of their relatives. However, the ZTCC has not been able to satisfactorily mobilise its resources to retrieve these invaluable means to helping people suffering from organ failure to live longer.

organ retrieval and transplant, said, “Be it a private or government hospital, both need a special fund to pay the expenses and fees of expert doctors who carry out operations to retrieve organs.” He added, “Why will the donor family bear expenses which could go up to Rs. 2 lakh, depending upon the hospital? Neither can many receivers arrange the money at short notice. If ZTCC get some fund from state, it will do its best. Raul put forward a proposal that will come up in the general meeting of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) soon, that the state government be requested to deposit some amount with the ZTCC for contingencies like the ones outlined earlier. In case, a patient is declared brain dead and the family permits organ donation, the money should be immediately transferred to hospital for expenses of retrieval of organs.

Former Mayor Shubha Raul told the ADC, “Some families have come to me with grievances. A member of their family had passed away in the ICU in a city hospital. They wanted to ensure that his organs or at least eyes were retrieved and donated to a needy patient.” She added, “Collecting all their courage, they asked the hospital authorities to retrieve the organs from the body and donate them. Shockingly, the hospital authorities asked the family to deposit a sum of money for the procedure. As it is they were grieving, so this was a double shock. At the same time, a potential receiver also could not arrange money at the short notice of a phone call, and consequently the organs were declared unusable.” Dean of Sion hospital Dr Avinash Supe who has long experience in

inod Shete (58), a resident of Bhivandi has 24 relatives. Earlier this year, some of them pledged to donate their eyes. The others pledged to donate their bodies to medical colleges for research. Two years ago, Vinod’s younger brother Laxman Shete had a prolonged illness that caused his kidneys to fail. Before they could find a donor, his illness caused multiple organ failure and consequently he died. It was great loss for the Shete family. Every day in India and in
Mumbai, several people die due to kidney failure and their relatives attend to the sad fallout in grief. But the Shete family was different from the average. They did not forget the cause of Laxman’s death. All family members came together and they decided that another Laxman should not die due to lack of organ donors. Then all 25 members, including Vinod, unanimously and voluntarily filled organ donation pledge forms. They went one step further; Vinod pledged to donate his body to medical college.
In some states in the US, as soon as a patient is declared brain dead, his body becomes the property of the state. Government authorities take the call on the retrieval and donation of his organs. In India as per the existing law, despite the consent of the individual even in writing that his organs be donated, this cannot be done unless his family permits. There are two streams of debate over this issue, whether to amend law and made brain dead body as state’s property, or whether to treat the individual’s own wish as permission. Dr Pravin Bangar of KEM hospital and Dr Supe were of the opinion that we are not culturally mature enough to amend the law and make brain dead bodies state property. Given the cultural, religious and emotional issues at work here, such a step will backfire. The best way, they feel way is to educate, make aware and encourage people about this noble donation, so that people would come to hospital to fill ‘organ donor form’.

Sardar Tarasingh, a legislator from the eastern suburbs, proposed that the state public health department add one line on the admission form that is filled during the admission of patients into public and private hospital. This line could ask whether the patient would like donate his organ or organs after his death. If he is willing, then hospital should give him a ‘donor card’. In case the patient dies in future, the organ should be retrieved with family permission. Tarasingh said, “One line will not make instant change but it will hopefully make a huge difference in future. Even now, millions of people don’t know about organ donation or in particular skin or liver donation. It will create awareness among the masses. Slowly and steadily, people will voluntarily turn up for organ donation.” ture for both kidney and liver retrieval and transplant facility. However, Nair has only kidney retrieval and transplant facility. Director of Medical Education Dr S.J. Nagda said, “We need to go a long way to develop infrastructure for organ donation. It is a very difficult and complex task.” She added, “We are planning to appoint Coordinators and Councillors in civic hospitals to increase the speed of organ retrieval and transplant. Coordinators will interface with donor and receiver, while councillors will advise and encourage family members of a brain dead patient to donate his organs.” The civic body also needs to make storage facilities for storage of organs which is very difficult and complicated task. Besides, there is a need for extra IC units where critical receivers can be placed.
I will be missing that organ in my next life! An incomplete body will not go heaven. I could still be alive when they remove my organ If I'm in an accident and the hospital knows I want to be a donor, the doctors won't try to save my life! My religion does not approve of organ donation My family will have to pay if I want to donate my organs I am not the right age for donation (From newborn to 90 years, it’s all good!) Organ and tissue donation means my body will be mutilated. (Donated organs are removed surgically without mutilation)

Replying to supplementary queries on a calling attention notice moved by Kiran Pawaskar (NCP) and others, the Minister of State for Housing, Sachin Ahir stated that the government has directed the Mumbai Repair and Reconstruction Board (MRRB) to prepare a master list of all the tenants staying in transit camps. woman identified as Poonam, gave birth to a healthy baby girl inside the first class compartment of Churchgate-bound local train at Vasai railway station early on Thursday morning. The woman was apparently on her way to the hospital when she went into labour aboard the train. Fortunately for Poonam, two nursesRony Baby and Ashwini Khanvilkar helped her deliver the baby girl. The mother and new born have been admitted to a hospital in Mumbai. Meanwhile, sleuths of the Vasaigaon Police have arrested a teenaged girl who tried to flee after dumping two foetuses inside the toilet of a civic hospital. According to the police, the matter was reported from Sir D.M. Petit Civic Hospital run by the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC), where Reshma (name changed) (19) got herself admitted at about 2 a.m on Thursday, complaining of acute stomach pain. “Reshma, who was in an advanced stage of pregnancy, later entered the toilet, delivered two four-month old foetuses – one male and one female – and tried to flee after a failed attempt to flush them down,” said the police. fter a decade long struggle, the roadblocks for the construction of an independent court in Mira-Bhayandar seem to have finally been cleared. Following a Callto-Attention motion moved by Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik in the Legislative Assembly, the state government authorities not only gave their nod for setting up the much needed ‘Court of Law’ at a reserved plot in Mira Road, but also informed that a budgetary allocation of Rs.3 crore had been made in the current fiscal (2013-14) for the construction of the court complex, including accommodation facility for the judiciary. It should be noted that a plot admeasuring 4,353 square meters has been allotted to house the courtroom building in the Hatkesh area (survey number 233, next to the Mayor’s official bungalow) in Mira Road. After years of dilly-dallying, in March, 2010, the revenue department had officially handed over the plot to the judiciary for construction of a Civil and Criminal Court. However, the proposal, which needed a green signal from the state law ministry, remained in suspension for over two years prompting Sarnaik to move a motion during the ongoing session of the state assembly.
MLA Pratap Sarnaik Responding to Sarnaik’s query, MoS (Law), Uday Samant, said that work has commenced and the courtrooms will be built soon. Covering an area of 79.4 square km, the twin-city of Mira Bhayandar, apart from the thousands that comprise its floating numbers, has a registered population of 8.14 lakh (official figure). Also, it has a total of five police stations in its jurisdictionKashimira, Mira Road, Navghar, Bhayandar and the newly formed Uttan Coastal Police Station, all which are controlled by an SDPO office, located in the premises of the Mira Road police station. “Litigants from Mira-Bhayandar and far off villages like Uttan have to travel all the way to Thane court for judicial cases. Taking into mind the astronomical volume of pending cases, establishing a court here will not only save time and expenditure of litigants, but will also ease pressure on the police department,” said Sarnaik.

However, cops from Wadala T.T. police station allegedly dispute the forensic reports. The Sion Hospital team led by senior forensic expert Dr Rajesh Dere had sent the victim’s vaginal swab for tests after it found discharge

Rajesh Dere and his team had found several reasons to doubt the assigned reason of death and had advised police to prepare a dummy that matched the victim’s weight and height. oliticians from the ruling Congress-NCP alliance in Maharashtra have ‘benami’ flats in the controversial Adarsh housing society here, BJP MLA Devendra Fadnavis alleged yesterday. Accusing the state government of dragging its feet over tabling the inquiry report in the state legislature, he said in the Legislative Assembly that those having benami flats included present and former ministers. There are records of cash payments transferred to the ‘dummy’ owners, Fadnavis said, raising the issue through a point of propriety in the Lower House, reports PTI.
The two-member commission of high court Justice (retd) J A Patil and former chief secretary P Subrahmanium was set up in January 2011 to probe the Adarsh scam with reference to specific issues, such as land ownership, reservation of the plot, town planning and coastal violations and the role of public servants. The report is expected to be tabled tomorrow, the last day of the monsoon session of the state legislature. On the eve of the session, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan had hinted at the possibility of tabling the Adarsh panel report during the monsoon session.
The BJP leader's comments came amid reports that the judicial commission has spared three former chief ministers and found that rules were bent for allotting land and granting various concessions to Adarsh housing society in Colaba. It has been reported that the commission's report does not fix direct responsibility on or pass adverse remarks against Ashok Chavan, Sushilkumar Shinde and late Vilasrao Deshmukh and instead pinned the responsibility on seven to eight retired or acting senior state officials for the lapses and for misleading the chief ministers. `1,935-cr assistance to rain-hit Vidarbha By Suyash Padate
A
fter the rains wrecked havoc in the Vidarbha region, the state government yesterday announced a package of Rs.1,935 crore for the rain hit region. Of the Rs.1,935
CM Prithviraj Chavan crore, the government proposes to spend Rs.840 crore on permanent schemes to effectively tackle natural calamities such as excess rainfall and floods, Rs.720 crore to reconstruct government properties and Rs.375 crore to individuals affected due to the rainfall in almost all the districts in Vidarbha. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan
declared this package while replying to a special debate in the Assembly. He said that the government would pay Rs.7,500 per hectare for rice, Rs.5,000 per hectare for soyabean and other crops damaged in the region. Nearly 4 lakh hectare of land has been damaged. The affected people in the region will be given 20 kg grains and 10 litres kerosene. “Rs.600 crore will be provided for the strengthening of roads which have been damaged due to the rain while Rs.100 crore will be given to four Municipal corporations to carry out repair work in their jurisdiction. The government has taken a sympathetic stance to provide similar assistance to municipalities and municipal councils. An assistance of Rs.70,000 will be provided to 3,800 people whose permanent houses have been completely damaged,” said Chavan. He assured that the government would also seek additional assistance from the Central government but also admitted that there are certain restrictions in availing the central assistance in view of the present criteria. The CM however, was silent on the strong demand made by the ruling and opposition members for the declaration of a wet drought in the Vidarbha region which is still witnessing excess rainfall. He clarified that the government was open to increase the assistance in future too.
ficers, so that henceforth they would be held liable for any illegal construction activity in their area, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has failed to take action against any ward officer. Wankhede again reiterated this at a recent weekly meeting with standing committee held at civic headquarters in Belapur, saying, “We have notified ward officers as designated officers and this change has been notified in the gazette as well. A notification to this effect was issued eight days back.“ He added, “If any officer does not take action against unauthorised constructions in his jurisdiction, he will be held responsible for the lapse and strict action will be taken against him.” However, NMMC has not taken action against any official despite issuing notices to 394 persons between August 2012 and May 2013. This fact emerged in a written reply by the NMMC to an RTI activist. The statement issued by Wankhede a year ago indicated that the municipal corporation had identified more than 394 encroachers. However, the column indicating action taken against respective ward officer was shown as ‘Nirank’’ meaning “None” or ‘Nil”. An activist who did not wish to be named stated that this is a well-lubricated mechanism in which politicians, bureaucrats and the police all are equally involved as encroachments are potential source of bribes for public servants.

UP chief minister’s unconvincing charge USTIFYING the suspension of IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal, Uttar JPradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav said that her action in demolishing a wall near a masjid would have led to communal problem. The wall had been constructed by a poor family of Muslims and she should not have, the CM said, ordered the demolition of the wall. It was an illegal construction, but the CM has ignored the fact. This is nothing but a cock and bull story. The IAS officer’s mistake was that she dared take on the sand mafia which is supported by the state government. The IAS officer has been honest and done her duty. She is facing intensive confrontation for her brave act and there is a demand by one of the Samajwadi party leaders that she should be arrested. The IAS Officers’ Association has quickly initiated action in defence of Durga Shakti. Representatives of the Association have met the Union Minister and brought the undemocratic action of the UP government to his notice. It is not surprising that he has still not got a reply from Akhilesh who does not apparently want to put a lie in writing. The Centre must take a tough stand: it should not let politics come in its way. The Samajwadi party has come to the rescue of the UPA government more than once and hence the latter’s response now may be soft. The media, activists and people across the country have expressed support to Durga Shakti. The IAS Association must continue its agitation. Her life is in danger. Chances are the mafia is after her blood. What the UPA chief minister does not seem to have realised is that incidents like this – Durga Shakti suspension issue – is likely to diminish his popularity. It could be the end of his corrupt rule in Uttar Pradesh.

HAT anybody who thinks that Narendra Modi’s remarks about the distress caused to a car passenger by a puppy being run over is in bad taste, must have his head examined. It is a remark of deep sensitivity and should be understood in the right spirit and not taken amiss as is being deliberately done by those who hate him. “Modi’s analogy splits open wounds” headlined The Telegraph (July 13). “India bites back as Modi’s ‘puppy love’ generates hatred” reported The Economic Times (July 13). External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid is quoted as saying that Modi’s statement reflected no remorse over the riots. Reading these and other similar quotes one begins to wonder whether Justice Markandey Katju’s remarks on idiots, embraces Cabinet Members as well. May one ask whether there has been a word of apology from the murderous Muslim crowd which threw petrol into a Sabarmati Express coach which was followed by fire in the compartment leading to the live incineration of some fifty odd innocent women and children? May one ask whether there has been an apology from the Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over the killing of Kashmir pundits, the burning of their homes, the looting of their shops and the mass raping of their women? And the displacement of over 3 ½ lakh pundits from their ancestral homes? When will these damn fools ever learn from history?

stroying temples is old hat and nothing to cry over? Isn’t it time for our secularists to stop making fools of themselves? In an editorial Deccan Herald (July 9) said there is a Myanmarese presence in Bodh Gaya and “the attack is considered to be an act of revenge against the persecution of Rohingya Muslims by the majority Buddhists in Myanmar”. The Telegraph (July 9) similarly wrote that “the government thinks this is a terror attack carried out in retaliation of perceived atrocities on Rohingya Muslims… last year.” These charges were made not by BJP leaders but by the media, but Congress spokesmen are quick to advise that the BJP should not make any references to Muslims until everything is proved by law. The unnecessary advice is frequently accompanied by words in bad taste showing a total lack of public behaviour. In 65 years of a journalistic career during which I have reported from the Middle East, North Africa, Europe, the United States and Latin America, not to mention the United Nations, even at the height of the Cold War, I have never heard a personal attack by any
Congressmen were Godhra-accused Does Mr. Khurshid know, as reported by The Indian Express (March 5, 2002) that several Congress leaders featured in the list of accused in the Godhra train bogey burning case? Prominent among them are Memud Hussain Kalota, Convener of the District Congress Minority Cell and President of the Godhra Municipality, Salim Abdul Ghaffar Sheikh, president of the Panchmal Youth Congress and Farouk Bhana, Secretary of the District Congress Committee. The Times of India (August 9, 2003) stated that at least 25 Congress leaders were accused of being involved in attacks against Muslims. Has the Congress Party apologised? What nonsense is Khurshid stalking about? The Telegraph (June 12) carried an article on Hindu Temples in Kashmir which said at least 170 out of 500 odd temples in Jammu & Kashmir have been damaged during the last two decades. Has any apology been received from the State Chief Minister or do we take that de-
MEDIAWATCH M.V. Kamath government spokesman against the leader of an ‘enemy’ country. Certain journalistic values were respected. But what I have heard in India from Congress spokesmen about Narendra Modi makes me feel like throwing up. In all these years I have never come across an alien government spokesman more despicable than two Congress spokesmen. But then what better can one expect from them when the Congress chairperson herself indulges in abuse of Narendra Modi? Sometimes, listening to or reading attacks on Modi indulged in by Congress ministers makes one wonder whether what justice Markandey
Khatju said about 90 per cent Indians being ‘idiotic’ is relevant of the ministers in the UPA government. One of the strongest assessments of the UPA government has come from Ravi Shankar, writing in The New Indian Express (July 14) which should be an eye opener to all Indian citizens. Presenting many facts about the UPA government’s recent schemes, allegedly to help the poor, Ravi Shankar noted that what was being done was “to use government resources for personal gains”. As he saw it, “Sonia Gandhi’s pet populist project, the Food Security Bill is nothing less “than a bribe offered to the people of India”.
Food for votes ploy To quote Ravi Shankar further: “Sonia hopes that by bribing the people once again, like the Congress did in 2009 by waiving farmers’ loans worth Rs. 52,000 crore as well as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Generation Scheme (MGNREGS) that cost the taxpaper Rs. 40,000 crore annually, the Food Security Bill is the biggest government dole… to be footed by the insignificant vote bank… In an era where developing countries expect self-reliance from its citizens, Sonia wants to spend government money legally on buying votes for the Congress.” As Ravi Shankar saw it, “all that is not Sonia’s concern… it is the Gandhi Family Security Bill alone that matters”. The UPA government has come under attack even by a paper like The Sentinel (July 6) far away from Delhi. As it said of the Ordinance to pass the Food Security Bill, “no civilized democracy in the world, works on the principle of providing huge subsidies on the daily requirements of essential commodities such as food grains and fuel for cooking. This is hardly an indication of good governance.” And to that the paper added: “A government that lacks the guts to even publish the list of economic offenders with fabulous fortunes outside the country will naturally think of subsidies on food for those below the poverty line. After all, this is a double-edged weapon. It not only wins votes but also generates a huge corpus of funds that can be siphoned off.” The matter has to be taken to court. The FSB is the most notable example of high corruption and its supporters deserve the highest punishment according to the law of the land. But then, as the saying goes: who will bell this cat?
Dada J.P. Vaswani’s philosophy and teachings 1. In the endless adventure of existence, God and man are comrades. God is our one unfailing companion. He will never leave us. We may try to run away from him. But he will continue to follow us as our own shadow. In the words of Thompson, he is the “Heavenly Hound.” 2. There is a meaning of mercy in everything that happens to us. For God is All-love. He is All-wisdom. He is too loving to punish, too wise to make a mistake. Whatever happens in the Divine Providence happens for our own good. Nothing happens a moment too early or too late…therefore wherever God takes us, let us go, wherever he keeps us, let us remain. Let us never forget that all is well, all was well, all will be well both tomorrow and a hundred years hence. 3. When man surrenders himself to God, He takes upon Himself his entire responsibility. All we need to do is to hand ourselves over, in childlike trust to the Lord. And the
to love one another. 7. Are you anxious to love God? Then you must be prepared to lose yourself. 8. Do you want God to be yours? Then you must first become his! 9. How may we know that we are drawing closer to God? The closer we draw to God, the more tender and compassionate become our hearts to the needs of those around us. 10. What is the best exercise for the heart? Reach down and lift up as many as you can. 11. Misfortunes are blessings if we handle end; they are only a bend in the road. Problems are not stumbling blocks; they are step- them well. They are like knives which hurt or ping stones to a better, richer, more radiant help as we hold them by the blade or handle. 12. Life is too short to be spent in faultlife. Quite often, problems become the door through which God enters our life. We have finding, holding grudges, or keeping surrounded ourselves with hard shells which memory of wrongs done to us. Forgive keep God away from us. WE WIN BECAUSE WE FIX
MOST of the matches involving Team India are fixed which explains how we touch the top spot in all the three forms of the game. The Delhi Police have alleged that the International Cricket Council (ICC) knew about the bookies meeting international cricketers about spot-fixing, but did not do much. The charge sheet in the spot-fixing scandal suggests that several bookies but were also spotted with a few international players in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka by the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit. They, however, slipped away without being caught. The bookies, Sunil Bhatia and Azmal along with Baburao Yadav, a former first class cricketer, had met two Indian players, who are presently a part of the Indian team in Sri Lanka along with a senior Sri Lankan player. The charge sheet, however, doesn’t indict any other cricketer neither does it give any evidence against anyone else. The ICC official also talks about the DCompany’s attempt to ‘corrupt’ the 2011 World Cup. Thus, we find that Team India is blessed with the help of bookies to win international matches regularly but not during the Zimbabwe tour as the minnows do not have

IT is fittingly believed that the vital code of justice is that no man shall be a judge in his personal source. However, this code is hardly ever pursued in our country. Politicians work as judges and give themselves clean chits. The BCCI inquiry panel, which went into the charges of betting and spot-fixing in the IPL, has done the same by giving its president N.Srinivasan, a clean chit – a move which was anticipated. The supposed inquiry was nothing but a malicious joke on cricket fans. It is incredibly disappointing that our country is incapable of sticking to the doctrines of natural justice. As such, it will not be out of place to quote that the constitution of BCCI’s two-member inquiry commission to investigate its own president was an obvious breach of the principle — nobody ought to be a judge in his personal source. — K.V. But go back in history to 1953-54 when Nehru unilaterally drew borders in Aksai Chin to show it as Indian territory. Most of these old maps have been burnt including Nehru’s first edition of ‘Discovery of India’ (1946) which showed Aksai Chin as not being a

‘STANDING Committee Chairman Resigns’ (ADC, July 31) simply reveals that this move is only divert the attention of frustrated and hugely agonised Mumbaikars who are fed up with the daily ordeal of the monsoon. The resignation of the chairman Rahul Shewale does not provide any solution to this menace neither does it attract any public sympathy for such utter mismanagement of poorly constructed and maintained roads. It is the imperative of the BMC to find a permanent solution to this nuisance which affects commuters not only professionally, as they reach work late for no fault of their own, but also physically, as they are often affected by acute backaches. The US VP’s wife Jill Biden recently travelled along a Mumbai road after which she said that she had never before travelled on such a road. Shame on the BMC!

PROMOTE RATHER THAN SUSPEND inexperiencce of the chief minister, Akhilesh Yadav, who is yet to find his feet in the governance of his big and always problematic state. If the demolition of a wall was unnecessary, the government could have got it built again in a day or two. Suspending a young lady officer for this ‘crime’ does look too harsh and is likely to demoralize the lady. Such an impulsive action on the part of the chief minister only goes to show that the sons of former chief ministers may not make good chiefs themselves. There are other examples too in our country to support this perception. It would have been a lot better if the veteran Mulayam Singh Yadav, had continued as the chief minister and groomed his son for future responsinbilities as his deputy instead of anointing him chief minister when he is still around.

AFTER taking over the Uttar Pradesh, the CM Akhilesh Yadav promised that no callousness in law and order would be tolerated and he declared that he would cleanse the political system of malcontent. However, the manner in which IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal was suspended, and the district mining officer transferred, was very arbitrary. U.P has the highest number of politicians with rape, murder and molestation cases against them and the Chief Minister has failed to display any alacrity in breaking the widespread politician-criminal nexus. It is high time he withdraw the honest officer’s suspension, before he is accused of being involved such activities. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

There’s no need to go overthe-top to show your friends that you care, but everyone likes a gift every now and then! Artist Akhilesh Kumar is holding an exhibition of his sculptures and drawings this weekend. The artist, who feels connected to nature and the Earth, has created work that reflects the concepts of origin of life and the seed that germinates after the first drop of rain. He tells us, “My work reflects the concepts of origin and the beginnings of life and is about the seed that germinates afresh with the first drop of rain after the parched sun. In a way, my work has an all-pervading emotion of hope — hope for the continuity of life and of novelty emerging from the nurture. Each piece tells the story of the origin of a seed idea, which grows into an evolved form through the creative processes of nature.” Head over this weekend to catch his imaginative work. T >> If you are looking for a gym that is spic and span, The Red Gym in Khar won’t disappoint you
he Red Gym is a 24/7 gym which started based on a unique concept called ‘Twogetherness,’ wherein you can join the gym only if you have a personal trainer. However, they have now embraced flexible policies and also have in-house trainers. This means you can visit the gym anytime you want, but the in-house trainer needs to be informed beforehand. But, if you have a personal trainer, that problem never arises. However, when we visited the gym, we pointed out to them that there are several fitness clubs that allow people to come in with their own trainers. So, what makes The Red Gym any different? We were told that the membership fee increases drastically at other gyms if you use this facility. But, at The Red Gym, you only pay `3,000 extra per month which is indeed reasonable if you compare the additional charges that other city gyms levy. The gym is 4,500 sq. feet and approximately 60% of their clientele comes

RAINBOW RUSH Lakmé Salon in Bandra promises to add some vibrant fun to your look with their monsoon specials. Rhea Dhanbhoora checks it out
T
he dull, drab weather can get you down, so it’s often that I’m in a mottled mood, devoid of colour during the monsoon. My review at Lakmé promised to change all that by adding a little dash of colour to my day. I’m not usually a fan of mixing hues, but the sample pictures for Lakmé Salon’s new monsoon art looked like a good way to brighten up a dull rainy day. As I waited in the colourful salon and indulged in some people watching, noting the polite, friendly way in which the staff greeted and handled all their customers. The monsoon specials consist of hair extensions (Approximately `650 per extension) and nail art (`550 onwards). First up were the hair extensions. These are
by no means a new trend; college kids way back in 2007 were rocking mutli-coloured strands in their hair. In true monsoon colour spirit, I had two blue ones plied into my hair. They’re placed on a few strands and promise to stay on for at least 2-3 months. The blue is a pretty colour, but the price seemed a bit too much for one thin string. If they were thicker they’d look better and seem more worthwhile. If you’re looking to make a style statement with your nails, the much more value for where 101, C/5, Libra Towers, 1st Floor, Opp St Peters Church, Hill Road, Bandra (W) contAct 61427514
accompanied with their trainers. The first thing that we noticed about The Red Gym was its cleanliness. Even the washrooms were spotless and it’s clear that hygiene tops their list of priorities. They offer fresh toiletries to every member every day — another distinctive aspect — so all that a person needs to come in is their gym attire. The spacious and pleasant smelling washrooms also have an enclosed area for massages. Another highlight of this gym, which we particularly marvelled at, was the idea of having steam inside the shower cubicle. Ideated by owner Sanjeev Singh Chaddha, you can enjoy a steam in your shower area instead of a common steam room. Sanjeev, a fitness enthusiast and Mr. India 2009, used to be quite uncomfortable by the idea of sharing the same steam room and thus, when he decided to set up his own centre, he made sure that his members didn’t have to go through the same. Another aspect which they make sure of is that the members don’t smell. We asked them what if a member forgot to use deodorant on a particular day. To that we were told that he or she will be given a deodorant and they will be requested to apply it! The Red Gym is located in Khar (W) and many celebrities such as Ranveer Singh, John Abraham and Hrithik Roshan frequent the gym if they are shooting in the vicinity. Their trainer Ram Chandran also undertakes a fitness program called Transformation wherein a person’s fitness levels and appearance changes drastically within the span of three months. The Red Gym has a Red Café outside the gym, which is also a 24/7 operational outlet offering only healthy food items. If you take up the Transformation program, then your food will be supplied by the café and delivered to you wherever you are. Overall, The Red Gym stands out because of its Twogetherness program offered at reasonable rates, top class hygiene, the combined steam and shower cubicles and of course, its 24/7 services.

Coated with a pretty gold sparkle and top coat, my nails were shiny, colourful and ready to go in a short while, but one that didn’t seem rushed. I wouldn’t opt for the hair extensions again, which seem to be slipping after just two weeks. The nail art on the other hand, is only just about beginning to chip and I haven’t been careful with it, so that’s impressive. If you can ignore a few décor faults, the service will distract you from the flaws. Prices are on par with other salons of the same caliber.

or this review, we get three dogs to try out Kennel Kitchen dog food along with two cats who use their keen sense of taste to help us out. The wet dog food comes according to the size of your dog and the packaging is very secure and impressive. A bowl of Kennel Kitchen home style dog meal contains freshly sourced chicken, lamb, eggs, peas, sweet potatoes, carrots, fish oil, rice, natural sources of calcium and fat. We tried the Lamb & Vegetables (for large breeds) and the Chicken & Vegetable (for small breeds). The food on the cover looks nothing like what I served in the dog dish. It’s not as colourful and seems to be heavy on rice, but I could also clearly see the peas and chunks of meat. I also saw two dogs going crazy with the smell! The third could not be bothered. Two of the three dogs loved the food and swiped it. The other dog,

Three Wise Men has launched a brand new food and drink menu. Is it a hit or a miss? Dev Goswami gives you his verdict

H
aving never visited Three Wise Men (TWM) before, I did not know what to expect when I heard that they had launched a new menu. I asked around and the responses I got were, ‘great music, good cocktails but the food leaves much to be desired.’ So, when I entered TWM, I knew I was going to focus on the food. Before I start with what I thought about the food and drink, I have to say that TWM has an amazing playlist of rock, alternative rock and pop rock that you can sing-along to with your friends or silently enjoy on your own. Their playlist makes the experience a whole lot better. We started off our night with two cocktails — the Basil & Thyme and the Pomegranate Martini (`595 each), both of which were an instant hit. The former left a wonderful mint aftertaste and was potent enough without overpowering the overall taste. The second drink had a sweet and sour taste that was absolutely delicious — a great pick-me-up after a hard day at work. Both the cocktails built up our palette well and I was quite eager to try the food. We started off with the Wild Rocket Leaves Salad (`195) and the Fettuccine Jalapeno Chicken Pasta (`275). The salad was light with perfectly balanced flavours. ample tomatoes and oranges added a delightful-to-the-tongue citrusy tang that went well with the sharp rocket leaves. The pasta is their take on the omnipresent Aglio Olio Spaghetti. The chicken was wonderfully soft and well-marinated but it is the slightly-spicy-slightly-tart jalapenos that take the dish to a whole new level — unique and must-have. Next up was the Pepperoni Pizza slice (`135) and the Mexican Buritto (`230). The pizza is a meat-lover’s delight! Though they used ample spices, the pizza was balanced enough to let the meat and the cheese shine through. Weight-watchers might not appreciate it, but have a bite and we promise you that with your mouth full of the wonderful meat-cheese combination, your weight will be the last thing on your mind. The Burrito is another dish that is worth trying from their new menu. By now we were completely full, but the wonderful food that we’d been treated to made it hard for us to refuse the recommended Patty Melt Burger (`275). And we are so happy that we did not. The beer-marinated chicken patty was crisp on the outside but melt-in-your-mouth soft on the inside. The gherkins and jalapeno mayo worked really well with the chicken to result in one of the best burgers that we’ve had in the city. Overall, it was one of the most perfect culinary experiences that I’ve had in a long time — from start to finish everything was delightful and I couldn’t find one fault. The service was a bit slow, but the food more than made up for it… visit Three Wise Men and you’ll know what we mean.
Where www.kennelkitchen.in Price `105 for 500g she’s a bit of a food critic, sniffed at it, tried it and decided she wanted none of it. One of the cats, who is usually a finicky eater, also enjoyed the wet meal. The other stuck to his usual. So, three out of five of our furry reviewers seemed to enjoy the food. As a pet owner, I was also happy to note that the food contains no preservatives or additives. However, they also say that they “keep in mind the nutritional value of the food a dog would garner on his own in the wild.” Honestly, this put me off. Domestic dogs in the wild (a.k.a. the streets) eat from dustbins. Overall, Kitchen Kennel might work out a little pricey if you have more than one pet. Also, considering that two of our reviewers didn’t like the food, it would be best to buy a few packets first to see whether your pet likes it or not.

POOCH OVER PARTNER? Women miss their pets more than their partners whilst on a holiday. Tejasvi Desai tells you some surprising facts about this special bond that women share with their furry friends
>> Don’t be too surprised if your pet gets a Missing You postcard and you don’t
E
ven though dogs are a man’s best friend, it’s women who go barking mad for their dogs when they’re on holiday. A recent survey by global travel search site, Skyscanner, has revealed that women who own dogs miss their pets more than their partners, friends or family when they are away. Market development manager for Skyscanner-India, Kavitha Gnanamurthy, says, “Our survey adds a twist to the saying about dogs being man’s best friends as it proves otherwise. Dogs are considered to be part of the family, so it’s understandable that women miss them

when they are away on holiday.” Skyscanner surveyed over 1,000 dog owners and found that while 37% men would miss their partners the most if they were on holiday without them, the same doesn’t hold true for women. Only 21% of the women who took part in the survey said they would miss their partners the most, while a shocking 37% put their favourite pooch first. The bond doesn’t limit them to missing their pets while on vacation. Dog owners even go to great lengths to keep in touch with their pets while on holiday. As many as
40% of them have called or texted to check whether their pet was fine, while 14% have admitted to ‘chatting’ with their dog over the phone so that it can hear their voice. 5% have taken the grief of temporary separation to a new level by having a holiday Skype ‘conversation’ with their dog. We think it’s time Apple came out with something on the lines of an iBone for the ladies to stay in touch with their precious pets. For those still living it up the old school way, 6% of dog owners have actually penned postcards for their dogs. It has even become a common practice for vacationers to carry
As far as cheap travel goes, Couchsurfing is perhaps one of the best ideas. But, the prospect of bunking with a stranger in a strange land sounds a bit scary, doesn’t it? That’s why Dev Goswami tells you what you should keep in mind to ensure that you have a safe experience
As far as ideas go, Couchsurfing is a good one; especially when it comes to travel and avoiding all the hassles and costs that go into booking hotel rooms. Not only is Couchsurfing a cheaper alternative, it also ensures that you get to stay with a local person — a much better option compared to hiring a tour guide. However, on the flipside, you’re going to be staying with someone who’s a complete stranger and who you’ve only connected with over the internet (in most cases). So, what do you do? Do you trash the idea? Do you go ahead even if you have some reservations? Here’s what you need to keep in mind: l Interestingly, Couchsurfing isn’t a universal term; it originated from the website www.couchsurfing.org, so, unless you have a personal recommendation, stick to this website as far as possible. l When it comes to accepting a request or choosing a host for your travels, trust your instincts — if you have a nagging doubt regarding a particular profile or person, move on to the next option. l The Couchsurfing website provides profiles that will come with reviews and
a photograph of their pet on their holiday. A shocking 3% of dog owners have cut their hard earned holiday short and returned home early as they missed their dogs too much. With owners, especially women, not wanting to be separated from their pets, it is perhaps not surprising as over half of holidaymakers plan breaks ensuring their pets aren’t home alone. One in five dog owners have never been away without them and 20% claim the company of any pet would be ideal on their holiday, more so than their friends or even children.
feedback by previous guests. Read all of them as it will give you a complete idea of what the person is like. l No matter how trustworthy you deem a host, always have a backup plan. Make sure you know someone else you can contact in the city/country and have a plan at hand to get out of there in case things go wrong. The latter might seem extreme, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry. l Get personal experiences from friends and family. If they’ve ever used the service and if you’re planning to go to the same location, make sure you keep their inputs in mind. l Pay attention to detail. From safety tips to how to read a person’s profile, the website has everything noted down in great detail. Do not miss out on it; as it is sure to go a long way in making your experience simpler, easier and better. l If you use Couchsurfing, leave your feedback so that other travellers can utilise it to plan their travel. Be upfront and honest and in case of a really negative report or safety concerns, lodge a confidential report on the website.

In a democracy, reform – be it of economic policy or of institutions – is essentially a political process. Having a parliamentary majority alone is not enough, because there are differences within parties. For reforms to be credible it is necessary that a wide cross section of society should understand the need for and accept the policy changes that a government wishes to introduce.

n yet another step to rescue the battered rupee, the RBI yesterday tightened hedging rules by making it mandatory for foreign institutional investors to obtain consent of holders of participatory note (PNote) and derivative instruments before hedging. An FII must have a mandate from the P-Note or Offshore Derivative Instrument holder for the purpose of hedging, RBI said in a notification. “Further, the bank is expected to verify such mandates, in cases where this is rendered difficult, they may
obtain a declaration from the FII regarding the nature or structure of the PN/ODI establishing the need for a hedge operation and that such operations are being undertaken against specific mandates obtained from their clients,” it said. The RBI’s order on P-notes is expected to further curb speculation on the rupee, by ensuring all P-Note related derivative trades are done for genuine customer needs, analysts said. The decline of the rupee to a record low of 61.21 against the dollar on July 8 forced the RBI to take a series of unconventional measures to curtail liquidity and curb speculation
in the past fortnight. Incidentally, on July 15, the Reserve Bank had put in place measures to restore stability in the foreign exchange market, including raising the Marginal Standing Facility and bank rates to 10.25 per cent and restricting access by way of repos to Rs 75,000 crore. The central bank also conducted open market sales of government securities of Rs 2,500 crore on July 18, the RBI review said. As a contingency measure, the central bank opened a dedicated special repo window for a notified amount of Rs 25,000 crore for liquidity support to mutual funds that face redemption pressure.
Goldman Downgrades Indian Equities To Underweight By A Business Reporter
G
oldman Sachs, a leading global bank, yesterday downgraded Indian stocks to underweight and recommended investors to stay selective on concerns of economic growth recovery. “The investment case for India has turned less favorable. Growth recovery looks elusive, macro vulnerabilities are rising and positioning remains extended,” the bank said in a research report. “We see further earning cuts and
limited room for re-rating. We downgrade India to underweight and recommend investors to stay selective,” it said. The report, however, favours export-facing sectors, strong balance sheet companies and thematic alpha trades. Goldman Sachs noted that recent activity data has been sluggish with no signs of a pick-up in investment demand. The external funding environment has also become more challenging causing the RBI to tighten liquidity. The Rupee may remain
under pressure and the RBI may keep liquidity tighter for the next 3-6 months, it said. The overall earnings sentiment remains weak, notably in the investment cyclicals and capex-related sectors. The report expects earnings to grow 5 % and 11 % this year and next, which is below consensus expectations. It also expect sales growth to moderate further and margins to remain under pressure this year compared to consensus expectations of a margin expansion.

Vrajendra Gaur: A Kohinoor among writers

T
hough writer Vrajendra Gaur passed away, aged 55, many years ago the memories of his writings are very much alive, thanks to the brilliant films he wrote. Sons SUNEEL V. GAUR and RAJESH V. GAUR chronicle the career graph of the popular writer who wrote the films—Kati Patang, Sharmeelee, Saraswatichandra, The Great Gambler among others—on the occasion of his death anniversary which falls on August 7. Actor Dharamendra for whom he wrote a few films reminisces, “Vrajendra Gaur saab was a very jovial, friendly and simple person despite being one of the best writers of Hindi films. I had the good fortune of working with him in a few films which he wrote. He was a very gifted and rare talent indeed. Today, anyone who picks up a pen calls himself a writer, but Gaur saab was a real ‘Kohinoor’ among writers.” Superstar Amitabh Bachchanji remembers Gaur very fondly and says, “Vrajendra Gaur was one of the most gifted dialogue writers I ever worked with. t’s said that in showbiz, if you don’t ‘show’, there is ‘no business’. This aptly applies to this latest entrant into the filmy duniya. She may not have the conventional photogenic looks of a heroine, but controversial glam babe Poonam Pandey definitely has the histrionic spunk and the shapely assets to qualify for Bollywood roles. The box office response to her authorbacked character in erotic thriller Nasha directed by Amit (Jism) Saxena released last week has been good enough to make showbiz producers desiring to cast her in their upcoming films. But ‘femme fatale’ Pandey is selectively checking out the lucrative offers. It may be recalled that Poonam catapulted into the limelight with her sensational declaration to ‘disrobe’ if India won the (cricket) ICC World Cup (2011). “Honestly, I am game to experiment with different kinds of contrasting lead roles to prove that I am versatile. But I guess, that in keeping with my bold image, the ‘oomph’ factor cannot be overlooked,” shrugs the actor who is peeved with what she calls “double standards”. “Our own people give so much dignified respect to a certain hardcore porn actress from abroad, (Sunny Leone) whereas I am being censured by my detractors. My debut venture Nasha is certainly not a porn film. It’s a regular Hindi feature film with its share of songs, emotional and sentimental besides the bold intimate scenes. Since I star in it, there’s skin show as well. But there is also an underlying social message that obsessive teenage infatuation can prove destructive if not nipped in the bud,” insists Pandey who off-screen has to contend with her conservative disapproving parents besides a host of “spoilsports”. Director Amit Saxena, who had directed the sensuous Bipasha Basu in Jism (2003), is happy with his latest discovery.

ning another film together before his untimely death”. Gaur was a leading dialogue writer in addition to screenplay and story writing in the Hindi film industry. He would say, “The dialogue writer holds an important place in Indian film making. He is the one who grafts flesh on the skeletal story with which a film usually begins.” The hardworking and amiable Gaur was born in Etawah and took to writing for films at the early age of 19. In a career spanning 35 years, he wrote approximately 75 films. He was essentially a literary man and two of his novels he wrote before Independence were filled with patriotic fervor. The books: Qalkatte Ka Qatleaam and Parole Par, obviously incurred the wrath of the then British government who banned them. In a career spanning more than 35 years, Gaur won a host of awards for his screen writing including two Filmfare awards for the screenplay and dialogue of Dulhan Wohi Jo piya Man Bhaye. He was also the President of the Film Writers Association for some time.
Rituparna, the cute social reformer in Calapor! Bengal star Rituparna Sengupta debuted in Hindi films with Teesra Kaun, directed by Parto Ghosh and later starred in films like Main, Meri Patni Aur Woh, Dahan, Do Knot Disturb among others. She has also acted in three films in Bengali directed by the late Rituparno Ghosh. Now she will be seen in a social issue-based film Calapor. The ADC’s Sandeep Hattangadi spoke to the Bengali lass at the press meet of the film. Some excerpts. What is Calapor? Calapor is a jail in Goa but we have recreated the set and most of the film is shot on this set.
What is your role in the film? I am a social reformer whose task is to reform the jail’s inmates—make them good citizens and bring them back into society. These inmates are prisoners due to circumstances but are good at heart.
What made you accept this film? I have always wanted to do something different from my glamourised roles and since this role had great acting potential and when the director, Dineshji narrated this film’s story to me, I accepted it right away.
How did you feel while shooting for this film? We had a great cast in Raghuveer Yadav, Harsh Chhaya and the jail’s inmates who were very new. It was fun working with them. Reportedly, Dr. Kiran Bedi appreciated your film? Yes. She saw the film and was impressed by it and congratulated us. She was present at the promotion of the film too. What next? I am doing three Bengali films and hoping to get some good film offers in Hindi too.

Tahira’s fabulous debut in Rabba Main Kya Karoon Tahira Kocchar is on the threshold of stardom with her debut film Rabba Main Kya Karoon and as she eagerly awaits the release of her film, the ADC’s Sandeep Hattangadi had a brief chat with her. Here is what the beautiful debutant has to say. Please tell us something about yourself? I hail from Delhi and did my education there from a British school where the school board exams are not held in the 10th standard but in the 13th standard. I also did my International Baccalaureate diploma and modelled while in school and also did a stint in public relations and advertising. I was one of the 20 finalists in ‘Femina Miss India 2010’ and since then I always wanted to be a star like Madhuri Dixit. I accepted this acting offer for Rabba Main Kya Karoon and fulfilled my childhood dream. How did you bag this role? Actually, I was getting many offers after the ‘Femina Miss India’ contest but I refused them since I wanted to concentrate on my studies and also the assistant director of Rabba Main Kya Karoon was keen that I should do the film. I refused. But when the director, Amrit Sagar himself urged me, I went for the audition in Delhi and was selected.
Do you have any acting experience? Not much. I did a 10-day workshop before the shoot of the film and I also acted in plays and danced while in school and college.
What is your character in the film? I play a highly strung, emotional girl called Sneha Malhotra.
Was it not a bit risky to act opposite a newcomer like Akash Chopra? No. Not at all. Akash is a talented actor and we also have senior actors like Arshad Warsi, Paresh Rawal, Raj Babbar, Shakti Kapoor and I learnt a lot from them.

A
fter the promos of Chennai Express came out, the online world is full of outrage about the stereotyping of South Indians, as lungi-wearing “Madrasis.” To large parts of North India, the difference in the language and culture of the four Southern states is the same, they all eat idli-dosa, they all wear lungis and prominent caste marks on their foreheads, speak with a funny sing-song accent and punctuate every sentence with “Aiyyo.” Hindi cinema has done little to correct these misconceptions, and simply flatters every community into what the
Aiyyo Raama! filmmaker thinks is an easily identifiable stereotype. Southerners have come in for a fair bit of caricaturing. Mehmood rolled up his checked lungi and sang ‘Hum kale hain to kya hua dilwale hain’, in Gumnaam. His accent was meant to be Hyderabadi, but the mannerisms, he used the same as in Do Phool, when he sang ‘Muthukodi kawadi hara’, in Tamil, but he and the ac-

tress wearing what looked like Kerala costumes. In Padosan he had a shaved-head-withtuft get-up and Aiyyo-ed his way through the Tamilian part. In the old Agneepath, Mithun Chakraborty played Krishnan Iyer MA with an atrocious accent—part Bengali, part Bollywood Madrassi. Several actors have played Anna types with faux accents and without the slightest research.
BOLLYWOOD All that is required to play Anna—whether he is a Shetty, a Reddy or an Iyer—has a sandalwood tilak on the forehead, gold chains and a few Aiyyos thrown in. But Bollywood merrily caricatures every community; a Parsi in full ceremonial costume will always be seen chugging along in an ancient car, with a fat, shrieky wife. The Bengali will be wearing a pleated dhoti, eating paan and speaking with an easily mimicked ‘roshogulla’ accent. The Muslim will always be wearing a prayer scarf and skull cap, and have the mark of the devout namaazi on his forehead. Dandiya music accompanies the Gujarati character, bhangra music goes with the Punjabi and laavni with the Maharashtrian. The UP-Bihar character will say “bhaiya” at regular intervals, and the Marwari moneylender with outdated red headgear will address everyone as “bhaaya”. The Sindhi can be identified with the “wadi” he adds to his dialogue. These quirks were supposed to help a viewer identify a character’s regional identity at a time most film characters didn’t have surnames. Bollywood had also not bargained for mixed marriages or migration. If they can’t slot their characters, they probably won’t know what to do with them!

or those who have been waiting to see the Shah Rukh-Katrina jodi re-unite after Jab Tak Hai Jaan there is bad news. Reports in a section of the press that the two are coming together again in Farah Khan’s Happy New Year are according to reliable sources “not true”. While Katrina has signed two new films, she has no room this year for any other film. Says a friend of Katrina, “She would have loved to do Farah’s film. But we believe Farah initially wanted to sign a completely new girl for Happy New Year. She chose Katrina recently after Katrina had already said yes to other projects. Katrina and Farah are very fond of another ever since they worked together in Tees Maar Khan.
To be in Farah’s next with Shah Rukh would have been fab. However, as much as Katrina would like to do Happy New Year, she cannot as she is committed to finishing Dhoom 3 and Bang Bang before going into Abhishek Kapoor’s film with Sushant and Kabir Khan’s film with Saif.” Interestingly, Farah’s heroine in Happy New Year has to be a fast-talking Marathi girl and also a fabulous dancer since it’s the role of a beer bar dancer. “Katrina would have needed a long period of intense speech practice to speak in Marathi. But where was the time?” asks a friend of the actress.
Goa is prime locale on Bollywood film shoot map P
ANAJI: Goa is increasingly becoming a preferred movie shooting destination for Bollywood and regional filmmakers. With the number of film shootings crossing the 100-mark till August this year, as against 80 in the previous two years, it’s evident that filmmakers are flocking the tourist state with every passing season. Successful films like Mohit Suri’s Ashiqui 2 and upcoming releases including Rohit Shetty’s Chennai Express and Milan Luthria’s Once Upon a time in Mumbai Dobaara
have been partially shot in Goa. The records available with the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG), a state government body dealing with the permissions for film shootings, show that even tele-serials and reality shows are stepping into the scene. Vikram Bhatt’s Hate Story 2 was shot in Goa extensively while Sunny Leone and Tamil actor Bharath Niwas’ flick Jackpot is also being shot here. Abbas Tyrewala’s romantic comedy film Mango which is shot on the streets of Panaji hit a contro-
versy earlier this month when bouncers hired by the makers manhandled social activist Dr. Oscar Rebello for allegedly disturbing a shot. The shooting had to be abandoned for a day after local civic body revoked the shooting permission. Zombie comedy Go Goa Gone was shot on the state’s beaches while Murder-3 also had Goa as its backdrop in many scenes. In 2011, Goa prominently featured in Rohit Shetty’s Singham and Maneesh Sharma’s Ladies vs Ricky Bahl.
Sholay 3D makers plan gala premiere he makers of Sholay 3D are planning a lavish T premiere that will see the original cast reunite after 38 years. Producer Jayantilal Gada and the Sippy brothers will invite the film’s original cast as well as scriptwriter duo Salim-Javed to the do, which will most likely take place in October. “We will surely have a mega celebration. The industry has already extended support. We will celebrate with the entire film fraternity in October to mark the return of the greatest film ever made,” said Gada. August 15 was initially locked as the release date for the 3D version, to coincide with the release of the original. But with several bigticket movies releasing that day, it was postponed to September 13 to commemorate the producer, G.P. Sippy’s birthday. Technical glitches have now forced the release to October. The makers are now planning to book a suburban multiplex for the event that will see Bollywood legends together after a long gap.

ULAWAYO: A merciless India maintained their stranglehold over minnows Zimbabwe as they cruised to a resounding nine-wicket win in the fourth cricket one-dayer to extend their lead to 4-0 in the five-match series here today. Opting to field after winning the toss, India bowled out Zimbabwe for a paltry 144, and then chased down the target with 115 balls remaining at Queens Sports Club. For India, leg-spinner Amit Mishra scalped three wickets for 25 runs, while debutant Mohit Sharma (2/26) and Ravindra Jadeja (2/28) picked up two apiece. Mohammed Shami and Jaydev Unadkat also accounted for one wicket each. Rohit Sharma (64 not out) and Suresh Raina (65 not out) were the two main contributors with the bat as the visitors extended Zimbabwe’s winless run. Raina struck six fours during his 71-ball knock while Rohit found the fence five times and cleared it once during his 90-ball innings. Chasing a small total, India suffered an early blow as they lost debutant Cheteshwar Pujara with the scoreboard reading 23 for one in the 10th over. The 25-year-old Saurashtra player was bowled by Tendai Chatara while trying to go for a drive to an incoming delivery only to see his leg-stump getting uprooted. Glimpses of the batsman’s talent was evident as he creamed Michael Chinouya for two boundaries through the off-side before being dismissed. Pujara’s wicket was the lone success Zimbabwe tasted as Raina along with Rohit shared a second-wicket partnership of 122 runs to take India home. Playing sensible cricket, the duo of Raina and Rohit brought up the fifty partnership in 61 balls. While Raina was more flashier of the two, Rohit looked content playing second fiddle to the left-handed batsman who has not been in the best of form in recent times. Adopting a careful approach, Rohit however did not miss out on the loose balls. Brian Vitori’s wide half-volley was spanked through cover point and
ting effort as they were bowled out in 42.4 overs. Such was Zimbabwe’s struggle that only four batsmen managed double digit scores after being invited to bat by Virat Kohli. With the series already in their pocket after having won the first three games quite comfortably, India made two changes in their playing eleven today, handing out debuts to Cheteshwar Pujara and Mohit in place of Shikhar Dhawan and R Vinay Kumar. Mohit impressed in his maiden ODI as he managed to extract pace and movement from the Queens Sports Club pitch. The 24-year-old from Haryana soon tasted success and registered his maiden international wicket in just his fourth over when he induced an edge from Sikandar Raza which Dinesh Karthik had no problems in accepting. Pitched on a good length on off stump, the ball nipped off the seam just enough to take Raza’s outside edge through to Karthik behind the stumps. Hamilton Masakadza (10) was the next to depart, caught short off the crease by a direct hit from Jadeja. Captain Brendan Taylor, Sean Williams and Sibanda departed in consecutive overs to make matters worse for Zimbabwe, who lost half of their side inside the 50-run mark. While Jadeja accounted for the wickets of Taylor and Sibanda, Jaydev Unadkat removed Williams. But Chigumbura and Waller came to the home team’s rescue with a 80-run sixth wicket before Zimbabwe witnessed another collapse. Mohit broke the partnership when Wallace nicked one to then guided Prosper Utseya Williams through deep square leg. Karthik. Therafter, Chigumbura Raina hit Chatara for two more was left stranded at the other end through the same region. At the other end, Raina was fours in three balls before Rohit as wickets kept on tumbling like playing freely after he got into the slashed one through the point and nin pins for Zimbabwe, who lost groove with a square-driven short third man region and lofted their last five wickets for just 17 Vitori over long-on for a huge six to runs. boundary off Chatara’s bowling. Clarke leads from the front with defiant ton M
ANCHESTER: Australia captain Michael Clarke led from the front as England suffered their share of Decision Review System (DRS) angst on the first day of the third Ashes Test at Old Trafford. Australia were 255 for three after 77.3 overs in Manchester, with Clarke, who won the toss, 101 not out. Steven Smith, who survived two unsuccessful England reviews as the hosts used up all their challenges for the innings, was 46 not out. The tourists lost just one wicket in the session when opener Chris Rogers, in sight of a maiden Test hundred, was lbw to off-spinner Graeme Swann for 84. In a match Australia, 2-0 down, had to win to regain the Ashes — a drawn series would see holders England retain the urn — Clarke opted to bat first after winning the toss despite his side being dismissed for just 128 in the first innings of their 347-run second Test defeat at Lord’s.
SPORTS
Although Australia had recalled David Warner, usually an opening batsman, they stuck with allrounder Shane Watson and lefthander Rogers as their first wicket duo. The pair responded by putting on 76 before Watson was caught at first slip by England captain Alastair Cook for 19 off first change Tim Bresnan after James Anderson, on his Lancashire home ground, and Stuart Broad had seen several good outswingers go unrewarded. The 35-year-old Rogers scored briskly to complete a 49-ball fifty, including 10 fours, with two successive boundaries off Anderson. But after 81 minutes Watson, as he is prone to do, pushed firmly forward and edged Bresnan to Cook. And 76 for one became 82 for two when left-hander Usman Khawaja, playing forward to a sharply turning delivery from Swann, was caught behind by wicketkeeper Matt Prior for one.

Players defend sport in wake of doping cases
WASHINGTON: ATP players defended their sport and the tour's updating of antidoping information in the wake of drugs cases involving 15th-ranked Croatia's Marin Cilic and Serbian Viktor Troicki. "Tennis does a good job of testing from my experience," said 20th-ranked John Isner, the American number one, yesterday. "Tennis as a whole, I do feel, our sport is clean." The topic has drawn attention after Troicki was banned for 18 months after allegedly refusing to submit a blood sample to a tester and Cilic reportedly tested positive at an April event in Munich. Troicki, ranked 53rd, said he was assured he could skip the blood test without punishment. Uncertainty about how well informed players are regarding banned substances and the testing requirements then became the issue. "Our doping system is extremely tough," said American Mardy Fish. "We do get updates. We get a lot of information. There are things constantly coming through e-mails about player regulations, regulated substances." Asked if he thought players were not well informed about doping regulations, Fish said, "That wouldn't be my experience, no. I like to take that pretty seriously." Isner said the topic has not resonated with players, saying, "As far as talk in the locker room, there hasn't been any at all. "These situations are unfortunate. I don't know what to think of it. I will side on their (players') side. We'll see how it plays out."

IN BRIEF Bowlers bite dust as Lanka manage draw vs India in 2nd Test
KURUNEGALA: Indian bowlers fail to polish off Sri Lanka’s lower middle-order as twin centuries by No. 8 Binuka Fernando (100 not out) and No. 9 A K Tyronne (123 not out) enabled the hosts to earn a respectable draw in the second ‘Youth Test’ here today. The two-match series thus ended in a draw, largely due to 188-run eighth wicket stand between Tyronne and Fernando, which helped Sri Lanka reach 499 in their second innings. The visitors had to chase an improbable target of 319 in 27 overs. When stumps were drawn, India reached 113 for three. Starting the day at 245 for five with an overall lead of 64 runs, it soon became 258 for seven with two set batsmen Priyamal Perera (40) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (63) gone in quick succession after a 91-run sixth wicket stand.
Sri Lanka laments cancellation of home Tests vs South Africa
COLOMBO: The cancellation of the threematch Test series in the current South African tour of the Island had robbed Sri Lanka of the chance to impress ahead of the proposed ICC Test championship scheduled for 2017, senior batsman Kumar Sangakkara opined. Speaking at the end of the five match one-day series, which Sri Lanka won 4-1, Sangakkara said, “The South Africans struggled in the conditions here and showed they were unhappy at adopting. They were weak against our spinners.” “We could have easily exploited home conditions and gained advantage and could have won the series. This would have helped in our rankings leading to the 2017 Test Championship as South Africans are the No. 1 ranking Test side,” said the former captain, who scored nearly 400 runs in the series whilst recording his career best ODI innings of 169.
AIFF go ahead to IPL-style league
NEW DELHI: All India football Federation (AIFF) today gave its go ahead to the IPLstyle league with its executive committee agreeing to the holding of the tournament by its commerical partners IMG-Relliance early next year. “IMG-R gave a detailed presentation about the proposed tournament and we feel it will be the Ileague which will sustain Indian football but this short league will be a booster dose for Indian football. “Through this tournament we are looking for the popularisation of Indian football and taking the game to the masses. I league and this tournament will go hand-in-hand,” AIFF president Praful Patel told reporters.
Clubs and AIFF should avoid confrontation: Dempo
NEW DELHI: Dempo Sports Club owner and All India Football Federation VicePresident Shrinivas Dempo today said that all the stakeholders should amicably resolve the issues regarding the IPL-style football league proposed to be organised by AIFF's commercial partner IMGReliance. Since the idea of the IMG-R tournament came to the fore, the clubs have been adamant that they will not release players for this League but Dempo said the stakeholders should sit across the table and sort out the issues. "For the development of the Indian football, AIFF and Clubs are playing vital roles. Both sides have valid reasons in the issue and they are free to express their views. hat is why we have to sit across the table. These issues can be resolved," he said.

ÖNCHENGLADBACH, GERMANY: India scripted history as they stunned higher-ranked Spain 4-2 to enter the semifinals of the Women’s Junior Hockey World Cup for the first time here. They may have started the game as underdogs, but the Indian girls rose to the occasion and dished out a spirited performance to tame their higher-rated opponents and seal a last-four berth for the first time in the history of the event. India sounded the board twice in each half through Monika (10th minute), Navneet Kaur (34th), Vandana Katariya (41st) and Rani (48th) while Spain’s goals came in the first period from the sticks of Xantal Gine (7th) and captain Berta Bonastra (30th). It was the Spanish girls who struck first through Gine, who converted a penalty corner in the seventh minute. India equalised just three minutes later through a field effort from Monika.
Shah calls for a fresh probe into IPL spot-fixing scandal
N
EW DELHI: BCCI Vice President Niranjan Shah today became the first senior official to openly call for a fresh probe into the IPL spot-fixing scandal, saying such a step was needed as the Board’s “image has really gone down”. In a significant development ahead of the crucial Working Committee meeting, Shah said it was imperative to do something to improve the image of the Board, taking into account the recent Bombay High court order. The BCCI’s internal panel, formed to probe the spot-fixing scandal, had found no evidence of any wrongdoing.
Indian girls celebrate after scoring a goal against Spain. Spain restored their lead just five minutes from the lemon break through Bonastra before Navneet restored parity for India with an outstanding reverse stick shot in the dying minutes of the
opening half. However, after the change of ends, India took the initiative and surged ahead in the 41st minute when Katariya converted a penalty corner.
Senior level experience helped our junior girls: India coach
M
ONCHENGLADBACH (Germany): India’s chief coach Neil Hawgood has attributed the women’s team’s success in the ongoing Junior Hockey World Cup to the experience his wards have got while playing at the senior level. India fielded more or less the same team which came a cropper in the FIH World League Round 3 in Rotterdam in June and Hawgood said the experience of playing at the senior level worked wonders for the junior girls. “The success has come from all the big losses as we have been beaten by top teams of the world in World League Round 3. Now, the senior level experience has helped the girls at the Junior World Cup,”Hawgood said.
Srini to chair BCCI Working Committee meeting tomorrow N
EW DELHI: Unfazed by a Bombay High Court order which declared its probe into the IPL spot-fixing scandal “illegal”, a defiant N Srinivasan will chair the BCCI’s working committee here tomorrow, signalling his formal return to the top post despite the furore. The crucial meeting will mark Srinivasan’s return to the President’s post after nearly two months since he stepped aside pending an internal inquiry into the spot-fixing scandal which rocked the sixth edition of the IPL. BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel made it clear that Srinivasan will chair the meeting as he has re-
sumed his duty as the President, putting an end to the suspense over who will chair the conclave which will discuss all the legal implications of the High Court order and chalk out a future course of action. “He (Srinivasan) is the BCCI chief and he has already started working. There is no confusion as to who will chair tomorrow’s working committee meeting. Nobody till now has forced Mr Srinivasan to resign,” Patel said. Srinivasan refused to talk to the media on his arrival here, telling reporters at the airport to allow him to go. “Will you allow me to go to my car... I am entitled to go, allow me
to go. I just got hit by this camera. You cannot hit me like this with the camera. It’s not ok with me “, Srinivasan said before getting into his car. An internal probe by two retired judges had cleared president-in-exile Srinivasan’s franchise Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals owner Raj Kundra of charges of betting and spot-fixing. Hearing a Public Interest Litigation filed by the Cricket Association of Bihar, a two-judge division bench declared the twomember BCCI probe panel “unconstitutional and illegal”, taking the Board totally and completely by surprise.

INDIAN FOOTBALLERS SKEPTICAL ABOUT IPL-STYLE LEAGUE: CHHETRI

N
EW DELHI India skipper Sunil Chhetri said that the national footballers were "skeptical" about the proposed IPL-style league because of the ongoing rift between the I-League clubs and AIFF's marketing and commercial partners, IMG-Reliance. "A lot of players have spoken to me, they are very skeptical about the development. They feel scared. I can't take names but I try to calm them down. This is not a good position for the players to be. That is the reason I want the topsy-turvy situation to be resolved as soon as possible. It doesn't matter which way it turns. It should be solved," Chettri said on the sidelines of the launch of Nike's home and away kit for the Indian team. If the new IMG-Reliance league becomes a hit with the fans, clubs feel it will affect the already floundering I-League. The development has left the Indian club owners agitated and recently the ILeague Professional Football Clubs Association (IPFCA) has decided to not release players contracted to them for the IPL-style league. Chettri, who joined Bengalurubased football club -- JSW Sports last month, said he too was not sure about the IMG-R league and didn't want to wait any longer. "There was no risk in joining but nobody was sure what is going to happen. There was no definite plan and I didn't want to wait that long. I met a lot of IMG-Rellaince officials but I still was not sure. I have nothing against anybody and I am sure there will be a league and many players have signed already. I just want everybody to calm down and a good thing to happen," he said. "I don't want one body to go right and one goes left, that is not good for Indian sports. You have to go in the same direction. Clubs also want the betterment of football, AIFF and IMGReliance are also there to do good for the sports. They should work together," Chettri added. The IPL-style league is an ambitious project but Chhetri said it was not only about money for the
players, rather it was working under a good coach and playing for a good team. "It is not about money. Everybody has cars, everybody has money. There are many players who are running their family. It is never about money, it is about working with a good coach and playing for a good team," he said. Nike decided to continue its association with Indian football and Chettri and his boys will be playing a friendly against Tajikistan in their new apparel, before heading to Kathmandu for SAFF Cup. Talking about the upcoming matches, Chhetri said: "We will be attending the camp in Delhi on August 8th and then leave for Tajikistan on 9th. After playing in the friendly on Aug 14th, we will directly go to Bangalore for the camp. We want to have a good training for 30 days and I don't see any reason why we can't win in SAFF Cup. "The last AFC challenge qualifiers didn't go well for us but we are optimistic. We will do our best. There will be a bit pressure because we are expected to win in SAFF Cup. We don't want to look any particular team but it is important to win the opening match. A win in the first game will set the mood," Chhetri said. Last year, Chhetri had signed a two-year contract with Sporting Lisbon's B side but he moved to Churchill Brothers on loan towards the fag end of the I-League, before joining JSW Sport, a club that will be making its I-League debut this season. Asked about the reason behind the moves, Chhetri said, "I
was there for six months but got just five games for Lisbon, which was not good for my confidence. I was training regularly but not playing matches. I am not 19 anymore. So when I shifted base to Churchill brothers, I was happy as I got 13 matches. It was difficult to leave a champion team. I was happy with the vision of the Bangalore club. They set everything in place and then got the players. There are 21 players so far. It won't be easy. We have no long-term target. I'm sure we can achieve a lot of things if we stick together," Chhetri said.
McGrath’s wax statue unveiled at Madame Tussauds Sydney S
YDNEY: Australian pace legend Glenn McGrath was immortalised in wax with his life-size statue becoming the newest addition to the world-famous Madame Tussauds Museum here. McGrath was the winner of the Madame Tussauds Sydney Aussie Votes campaign where the Australian public was asked to cast their vote on which sporting hero they wanted to see immortalised in wax. The wax figure portrays McGrath in mid-action, about to deliver a fast ball down the wicket. McGrath was at the inauguration to re-enact the pose. Portrayed from the success of the 2006/2007 Ashes series, McGrath's wax figure is wearing the Australian Test team whites, with his number 358 embroidered on his shirt. McGrath donated both the spiked shoes that the wax figure wears as well as the ball in his hand. McGrath's figure now stands alongside fellow Australian cricket greats in the Sports Zone including Shane Warne and Donald Bradman, as well as Indian cricket star Sachin Tendulkar. "Having been chosen by the Australian public to be immortalised in wax and stand alongside
Waugh urges teams to play quality cricket before WC
MELBOURNE: Former Australia skipper Steve Waugh has urged all the tops teams of the world to prepare for the 2015 Cricket World Cup by playing quality one-day matches in the lead up to ICC's flagship event. Waugh was a key allrounder in the World Cup winning Australian side in 1987, while he was captain of the team in 1999 when it won the title for the second time. "The teams need to play as much quality
other sporting greats is truly an honour. The whole making-of process of the wax figure has been a real eye opener and I'm very pleased to see they have recreated my bowling stance perfectly," McGrath said. The wax figure took a staggering 800 hours, 60 Madame Tussauds artists and 250 different measurements to complete, along with exact colour matches for his eyes, skin tone and hair. This intricate process took many months, with the insertion of each hair taking six weeks alone. "Australia is a sporting nation and has produced some of the biggest
After tiger, Dhoni now adopts pup N
EW DELHI: In a humane gesture, India cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has adopted a rescued stray pup from the Hope and Animal Trust in Ranchi. Dhoni, who has posted a picture of the pup on his twitter page, has named the dog 'Leah'. "Adopted a rescued pup from Hope and Animal Trust Ranchi .V call her Leah in English and Liya in Hindi," he wrote in his twitter handle. Dhoni, known for his love for animals, had adopted a nine-year-old
tiger named 'Agasthya' from the Chamarajendra Zoological park better known as Mysore zoo in 2011. Dhoni is presently enjoying a muchdeserved break from international cricket. He is not a part of the Indian team currently touring Zimbabwe as the selectors decided to give him a rest and handed over the captaincy to Virat Kohli for the ODI series. It seems Dhoni is enjoying his break to the fullest as he also twitted on a range of issues, including his motor-

In the lead up to the World Cup, Australia are scheduled to host South Africa for five ODIs and three T20Is in November, before hosting India for four Tests from the beginning of December. They will then take on India and England in a three-nation tournament in January 2015. Australia entered the 1992 World Cup as the defending champions but according to Waugh they failed to peak at the right time. sporting heroes the world has ever seen so we are extremely proud to be able to welcome another Aussie legend to Madame Tussauds Sydney. "The Glenn McGrath wax figure was chosen by the Australian public and will nodoubt be a highlight in the attraction for many years to come, especially during the up and coming Ashes," said Quinn Clarke, General Manager, Madame Tussauds Sydney. At the height of his career, McGrath was one of the most dangerous fast bowlers of his time and currently holds the world record for the highest number of Test wickets by a fast bowler.
