here is some good news for Mumbaikars. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is neither going to introduce any new tax nor is it going to increase the existing taxes in the next fiscal year 201415, top sources have said. This is believed to be the aftermath of the AAP’s victory in Delhi. The civic administration is already in the process of preparing its fiscal budget for 2014-15, which is to be presented to the Standing Committee in the first week of February 2014. Former Municipal Commissioner Subodh Kumar had already increased existing taxes and had introduced new taxes in the fiscal year 2012-13. The tender floated by the BMC for ‘chikki’ contractors did not receive any viable bid

ad news for municipal schools students! The municipal administration confirmed that it had failed to procure Chikki – a nutritious diet meant for students studying in municipal schools. Consequently, lakhs of municipal school students are deprived of nutritious food and Rs.100 crore accounted for it will go back to the civic treasury. Despite repeated advertisements and tender notices, not a single prospective contractor turned up to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the Rs.100 crore tender for Chikkis. Education officials said that two to three contractors had come for inquiry but none of them reverted. Earlier this week, the civic administration had confirmed that due to the unavailability of Chikki, it would not be in position to provide Chikkis to the students. Every year, the BMC provides nutritious food for municipal school students.
Chikki should be hygienically machine manufactured. Serving Size: 30 gms packs for 1,70,000 students and 40 gms pack for 2,30,000 students. Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Education) Sunil Dhamne confirmed that no contractor had approached for the Chikki tender. He said, “Had even one contractor come, we would have given him the tender. But in this case, no one is interested in providing Chikkis”. He added, “Prospective contractors complained that our contract principle and standard of food quality was very high, at par with Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) and requested to lower it. A few were ready to give by that standard but the quantity was very less”. Till 2011-12, the civic body used and health experts suggested proMaharashtra Navnirman Sean to provide flavoured milk to mu- viding Chikki instead of flavoured group leader Sandeep Deshpande nicipal school students. he staff and patients at the BMC-run maternity hospital at Mahim got a shock on New Year eve as they were informed that the residential quarters and the hospital have to be vacated within 24 hours because the structures are unsafe. So on the first day of 2014, while patients were shifted to various other BMC-run maternity homes and hospitals, the staff was wondering where to go with their families on such a short notice. “The notice came as shock to us. We heard that we will be put up at the newly constructed maternity home at Kherwadi but nothing as been communicated officially as yet”, said a staff from the hospital. Madhuri Ghadge, who underwent a hysterectomy on December 31, was waiting to be shifted to the Prabhadevi nursing home. “The hospital is unsafe so I am going to be shifted to another hospital. I am waiting for an ambulance to take me there. It is difficult to be shifted after undergoing a surgery but then there is no option”, said Madhuri who has come from Mahad for treatment. A resident at the hospital quarters said, “We are waiting for the final decision so that we know where we have to go”. While the patients and the staff are being inconvenienced due to this sudden need for evacuation, Dr. Abhijeet Mahajan, medical superintendent of Mahim maternity home, simply called this an “administrative decision”. “A structural audit of the hospital was done and the preliminary report said that the buildings were in a dilapidated condition. So the patients and the staff were asked to vacate the buildings. The final report of the audit is awaited”,

he case of a resident doctor being beaten up by policemen in Solapur has created an uproar in the entire state and Central MARD (Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors) has decided to condemn this act by calling for an indefinite state-wide mass bunk from today (January 2).
“Every time such an incident takes place, we demand better security for doctors but nothing is done. Around two days ago, a doctor at Solapur was assaulted by policemen for no fault of his. As of now, no action has been taken against the policemen. We are protesting against the assault of doctors through this mass bunk. We will not go to the hospital. We will not do any work and will remain in our hostels. Let the senior doctors manage the patients,” said Central MARD President Dr. Santosh Wakchaure.

E is smart and handsome and surely intelligent too. Comes from a powerful, politically associated family with a father and grandfather that are big names in themselves, but this cub of the tiger clan has a growl that may prove to be greater than a roar. So you ask if we like him. Yes, we certainly do. He has already begun to walk his talk. The youth of the city identify with him and we are betting that Aditya Thackeray, if he pursues his intelligent and sensi-
the sake of a swimming pool. But this cub growled and we learn the construction of the swimming pool has been called off. Smart move considering that, with one stroke, he won the hearts of most residents of the area. So how does it matter? Matter, it does as was proved in the last corporation elections where a similar garden grab of the Walter D’souza Garden at Metro by the same politicians resulted in irked residents initiating a ‘Don’t Vote for Congress’
tive ways, will surely find a place amongst the front rankers in Maharashtra’s politics. So where does this sudden love and admiration come from? It comes from parents and PTA Associations of seven schools as also of over 5,000 kids who were just going to be deprived of their play ground at Colaba’s Wellington Garden for
campaign. Kids and all, on Election Day, were seen campaigning against the party. Results, the Shiv Sena’s first time Corporator Ganesh Sanap won from Constituency: 224 of the “A” ward. The anti-vote paid off. And now, seeing the writing on the wall, we suspect that the Lok Sabha seat of May 2014 of the area may just as well go to the Sena.

Mismanagement by organisers led to over-crowding at two venues

A
t two different places in the city, revellers vandalised the party venue after the party was interrupted due to over-crowding. Several people were stranded as they did not get a chance to get in and the party stopped in between while the event organisers escaped. For both the events, the tickets were sold manually and online as well through the radio. A New Year’s party organised at Tulip Star hotel in Juhu had entry fees of Rs.2,000 for normal passes, while VIP and VVIP passes cost Rs.4,000 and Rs.8,000 respectively. It was a lawn and pool-side party. Police sources said that BMC, Police and Traffic permissions were acquired by the management. However, the approximate capacity of the ground was below two thousand while more than six thousand passes were distributed. Ravi Ranjan, a software engineer, who along with his 18 friends had taken passes for the event said, “When we reached the place it was completely packed. There was no place to enter inside. Food and drinks were both out of stock. The organisers were not to be seen anywhere”. Another businessman Jignesh Bhutta, a resident of Borivali, had visited the place with 12 of his family members. “We had taken passes

H Disgruntled revellers show the passes they bought for the New Year’s Eve celebrations. a few days ago. The event assured us vegetarian dinner and a DJ night till late 5 am”, said Bhutta. He further said, “We reached at 10.15 but there was so much crowd. People came outside and tore their passes. They said everything was out of stock including food and drinks. People outside then started breaking lights etc.” Senior police inspector Arun Chavan of Santacruz police station said, “We have registered an FIR under section 420 (cheating) of IPC. We have taken in more than 50 people and further investigation is on”.
A New Year’s party was also organised at Renaissance hotel in Juhu. The entry pass cost Rs.5,500 with a DJ night, food and alcohol till late 5 am. The crowd capacity was of one thousand while more than three thousand people came in. Jerry Fernandes along with his family of seven including two kids had taken passes for the same. He said, “We reached the place after 11 but there was no place to stand, it was so crowded. Once we reached inside there was no food, drinks were out of stock and there was a lot of commotion”.
New Year celebration: Drunken driving cases drop Around 568 were booked for drunken driving while 1,540 were booked for riding without helmet By Zuber Ansari
T
he city traffic police have recorded around 270 cases less than those recorded last year during their drive against drunken driving on New Year eve (December 31). A total of 568 motorists were booked for alleged drunken driving this year. It’s noted that every year, the highest number of drunken driving cases is recorded on December 31. Last year, on this day, 840 motorists were caught for driving under the influence of alcohol, in comparison to 739 motorists in 2011. Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vivek Phasalkar said, “This is due to our sustained and effective campaign on the ill-effects of drunken driving. We have also strictly enforced the laws to deal with the menace of drunken driving. Around 50 per cent motorists involved in these offences this year were in the age group of 21 to 30 years. The credit for the reduction in such cases should also be given to Mumbaikars who co-operated with the traffic police”. While 62 motorists were booked for speeding, 1,540 people were fined for riding bikes without helmets and rash driving. Besides, 570

undreds of revelers, angry about the promised entertainment and food not being provided at a New Year Eve bash, went on rampage at an amusement park in Mira Road. It was only after the intervention of senior police officials, including Superintendent of Police - Thane (Rural), Anil Kumbhare, that the matter was resolved and a section of disgruntled revellers given refund of their money at the local police station, late in the night. According to the police, QuickN-Deal, a local event management company had organised a New Year Bash at Seven Wonder’s Vardhaman Fantasy in Mira Road. While stag and couple entry passes were priced at Rs.1,000 and Rs.1,200 respectively, the organizers charged Rs.2500 for a group entry of five people. The main organizers, identified as Isha Thakkar, Taksh Thakkar and Rakesh Jain, had widely publicized the party, terming it as the biggest New Year Bash in Mira Bhayandar. Apart from distributing pamphlets
and installing banners, the organizers had even listed their event on popular social networking sites, boasting of celebrity guests, magic shows, and sumptuous food, but most of the entertainment and food never materialized, upsetting the revelers, some of whom who went on a rampage and destroyed the sound system, before the police stepped in. The organizers, on their part, claim that an unruly mob picked up a quarrel at the food counter, which sparked off trouble. “While a major part of the money had been refunded, we are also tracing the guests who left abruptly, so that we can hand over their refunds too,” said Rakesh Jain. “It was a complete fiasco. Leave aside celebrity guests and entertainment, the food stock was virtually exhausted before 11 pm. When the clock struck 12, we were standing in a queue at the police station to get our refund,” said a couple from Bhayandar. The organizers refunded a total sum of Rs.1.87 lakh to around 87 people who had lined up outside the police station.

CIDCO-built building collapses in Nerul By Khushboo Panjabi
A
CIDCO-constructed building in Nerul’s sector 15 collapsed at 4:30 pm on Tuesday. The structure was ground plus one within the premises of Ganga Jamuna Owners’ Association. The collapsed structure was allegedly an unauthorised extension of another structure. No casualties were however reported as the families managed to escape after an alert from the neighboring people. Nerul corporator Santosh Shetty was spotted at the site of accident. CIDCO had constructed the building over three decades ago and had undergone drainage cleaning work recently, undertaken by Navi
Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC). The debris were cleared by the disaster management team of the civic body and the fire department personnel. “Neighbours spotted the cracks on the walls and alerted us”, said a ground-floor occupant of the structure, Rashida Mubarak Sheikh. “The NMMC should have been careful while undertaking the digging work which weakened the structure and led to the collapse”, said a local. Ward officer Rajendra Sonwane said he will investigate the cause soon. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

The Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Transport authorities initiate investigation to ascertain cause of December 28 fire in bus, seek to assure passengers about safety
By Kaptan Mali
A
fter a bus of the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Transport (KDMT) burst into flames in Kalyan last week, the organization has ordered an enquiry to ascertain the reason behind the fire. Technical experts from Tata Motors have been called to investigate and their report is expected within a week. The KDMT has also decided to take precautions by making necessary changes in the tender invitation for another 185 new buses they have decided to buy under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
On December 28, a KDMT bus, on its way from Kalyan to Malanggarh, caught fire. Over 40 passengers had a fortunate escape thanks to the presence of mind displayed by the driver and the conductor. However, the fire in the bus has instilled a sense of fear among the thousands of passengers who travel by buses. It later emerged that there was a short circuit in the battery of the bus, and a spark came in contact with the steering oil of the bus, and a fire engulfed the whole bus within minutes. 30 such low floor buses were introduced in the city three years ago by the KDMC under
the JNNURM project. As per norms, low floor buses should have a central wiring system, among other safety precautions, and KDMT officials state that all such norms have been adhered to. Rajesh Kadam, Transport Committee head, KDMC, said, “The KDMT has received 30 such buses from Tata Motors under the Central government’s JNNURM project which were made as per the specific guidelines. We have asked engineers from Tata Motors to investigate the cause of fire and to make the necessary rectifications. We expect their report to be finalized within the next 7 days.”

Congress leaders demand cut in power tariff for Mumbai

H
ounded by the AAP effect, Congress leaders in the state have virtually revolted against its own government. Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal’s decision to cut in power tariff in Delhi has inspired state Congress president Manikrao Thakre and MP Sanjay Nirupam to demand reduction in power tariff in the state. Nirupam has threatened an agitation against the government if the demand is not fulfilled.
Sanjay Nirupam
Taking a cue from Delhi government’s decision of 50 per cent cut in power tariff, Thakre and Nirupam wrote a letter to Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan demanding that the government also reduce tariff for power consumption of less than 500 units per month in the city. Both leaders have also insisted for an audit of the power distribution companies. Speaking to reporters, “If this legitimate expectation of the entire middle class and slum population is not met in the immediate future we will Manikrao Thakre
A happy new year indeed for MSFC staff The Bombay HC asks MSFC to implement Sixth Pay Commission scales for its staff without waiting for the state government’s approval By A Staff Reporter
T
he New Year seemed to have started on a positive note for the staff at the Maharashtra State Financial Corporation (MSFC) as the Bombay High Court asked the corporation to implement the Sixth Pay Commission pay scales for its staff without waiting for the state government’s approval. This decision came as the division bench was hearing a petition of Bhartiya Kamgar Karmachari Mahasangh, claiming that MSFC was not implementing the pay scales of Sixth Pay Commission although its directors had approved the new wages at a meeting held in February 2012.
The petition stated that in another meeting held earlier, the Board of Directors had reiterated their earlier decision and resolved that the corporation should wait for a month in order to get the approval of the state to pay new wages. Advocate C.G. Gavanekar representing Bhartiya Kamgar Karmachari Mahasangh argued that the approval of the state government was not necessary since MSFC was an autonomous body. He submitted that under Section 23 of the State Financial Corporations Act, 1951, MSFC has power and authority to lay down the service conditions of its employees including pay scales and remuneration payable to staff.

MSFC need not wait till the approval is given by the state and shall implement the decision taken by its directors by giving the benefit of sixth Pay Commission to its em-

be constrained to launch a massive agitation against our own government. The possibility that some sort of hand in glove type of tactics cannot be ruled out since both companies supplying power have been increasing the tariff from time to time under one pretext or the other. The situation in Mumbai is similar to that of Delhi where the very same power distribution companies supply power”. Kejriwal’s AAP had in its recent election campaign in Delhi, promised to halve Delhi’s electricity bills if it was
voted to power. It had also promised the audit, alleging that power distribution companies have colluded with officials in earlier governments to over-charge Delhi for electricity. Four days after the AAP took over the reins of the Delhi its cabinet fulfilled both promises. Nirupam, who was in Shiv Sena before joining the Congress in 2005, has observed that the 50 per cent cut for consumption of up to 400 units in Delhi will directly benefit lakhs of middle class people and slum dwellers in a big way.
tance of Rs.136.49 crore in March 2013 to the corporation. In view of the precarious financial condition of MSFC, the state has not granted approval so far. Saying that the plea was without substance, the court dismissed the government’s contention that the MSFC would not be able to pay new wages in view of losses incurred by it.
After hearing both sides, Justices M.S. Sonak and V.M. Kanade said, “Since the financial corporation is an autonomous body, having power to determine the conditions of appointment and services as also the remuneration which is payable to its employees, it is not necessary for the Board of Directors to obtain prior approval of the state government”.

Hope for 2014
HE first column of a new year makes even cynical hacks like me acknowledge the need to say something optimistic and cheerful. And, since I write this piece on New Year’s Day in a friend’s house by the sea, let me begin by telling you that it was especially easy for me to be cheerful this morning because I woke to the sound of the tide coming in and the chirping of birds in a garden filled with flowers. Having breathed my fill of garden scents and sights I spent an hour on a treadmill watching New Year festivities from cities N just 48 hours after assuming office, the across the world. that the Finance Minister made some serious attempts to change the mood and even Rahul Gandhi noticed that Rs.10 lakh-crores worth of projects had been stalled by the Ministry of Environment but by then it was too late. Economists and businessmen now concur that the only hope is for the government to change after the coming general election. Since I promised you optimism in the first paragraph of this piece, I kept the good news for after the bad. If economically 2013 was one of the worst years ever for the Indian economy, politically there was a surfeit of good tidings. After an aeon of rule by a single family, Indian politics threw up important challengers from both the right and the left leaving the Congress Party looking pretty confused in the middle. Senior Congress leaders who had told me confidently at the beginning of 2013 that they did not expect Narendra Modi to win ‘a single seat outside Gujarat’ were forced to admit by the end of the year that he stood a serious chance of be-
more leftist members of Congress appeared to see was in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Mani Shankar Aiyer, a leftist even by Congress standards, admitted recently on a television channel that he was delighted with the emergence of Arvind Kejriwal and AAP because he believed they could ‘stop Modi’. AAP’s spokesmen have made it clear that they intend to contest the Lok Sabha elections, but it is hard to see them achieving at a national level the sort of success they did in Delhi.
A welcome addition
AAP’s economic ideas are so similar to those of the Congress Party’s current president that it is hard to tell them apart. Like Sonia Gandhi, they believe in involving NGOs in government, like her they believe in distributing freebies and like her they detest the private sector. Their manifesto reads, as I have pointed out before in this column, like a Congress relic from Indira Gandhi’s time, but despite its obvious drawbacks, AAP is a welcome addition to the political arena because it has proved that it is possible for new political parties to become big players without the backing of big corporations. Arvind Kejriwal’s decision to hold a referendum before deciding to form the government in Delhi, with Congress support, is also welcome even if he might find it hard to govern effectively if he continues to insist that every decision must be taken by referendum. His decision to set up a grievance cell for corruption cases is very welcome even if it could end up becoming clogged and non-functional before it makes a difference. AAP has brought an idealism and desire for integrity Tavleen Singh into Indian politics that has long been missing so it has the good wishes of even somecoming India’s next prime minister. tonight, but tomorrow you will do so. Because I know that you know very well that you are taking the five mindfulness trainings not only for yourself, but for your children. Because two glasses of wine have done no harm to you, but who knows what happens with your children. Maybe two glasses of wine can make one of your children become an alcoholic person, because your children are not exactly like you. So if you refrain from these two glasses of
MATTER & SPIRIT wine, the children will look up to you and they will naturally refrain from drinking wine. I know children who smoke. That is because the parents smoke. So let us think like this: we practice not only for ourselves, but for our ancestors, and for our children. We practice as a bodhisattva for the sake of everyone; for our society, also. The next morning she took all five precepts. So let us make a vow, make a determination, to live in such a way that can help so many people. Because when we've got that determination, there is a strong source of energy born in us and that energy will protect us from doing things that are wrong. That
source of energy in Buddhism, we call bodhicitta, the mind of love, the mind of awakening. It makes you alive, and children, also. They can have a strong mind of love, mind of understanding. I have seen many young people support their parents and help their parents to come back to the practice. So I have faith. I wish today you will discuss a little bit on this. Your insight about the question I proposed five, six days ago was very good. An unhappy person, to make other people happy, to love other people, has to take care of and love himself or herself first. At our meditation centre in Plum village, in France, we offer him, we offer her, the way to breathe, to walk, to stop, to embrace the feeling of pain, of sorrow. Because when you know how to take care of yourself, when you know how to love yourself, then you know how to take care and to love other people. The Buddha said that taking care of yourself, loving oneself, is the basic thing, is the basic condition, for you to take care and to love all living beings. Of course, other people can help you practice, but you have to make efforts by yourself. Peace, happiness and joy begin with myself and then I will get the support of other people around me. Then, later, I will be a source of support to other people around me. — Thich Nhat Hanh

IN the history of politics, December 28 will be remembered as one of the most imperative calendar days for the kind of spectators present for the swearing-in ceremony of Arvind Kejriwal and his party members (AAP) at the Ramlila Maidan in Delhi. The crowd that came in is actually a hammering to other parties undoubtedly personifying the throbbing and apprehension the people are going through and they all want a substantial transformation in the way politics and the government run the country. Mind it. The crowd didn’t come on special paid vehicles but on their own. Kejriwal, after the ceremony gave a stunning speech making all other parties thunderstruck, evidently giving a breakthrough power to the common man to say ‘YES’ to anyone asking for bribery and to report the same on the number to-be-announced. — Mohsin Mansoor Darvesh, Jogeshwari
A news anchor on an English news channel that I often watch is often fair and direct in the manner in which he conducts debates. However, in all fairness to the representative of the Aam Aadmi party, the anchor one night was unfairly badgering him to commit to the price cut on electricity. The gentleman said on several occasions that if people could wait for 15 years during the rule of the Congress, all he wanted was two days till the party is sworn in. They would insti-

tute an audit and within a short while, the cut in the rate would be announced. I think that was fair. The headlines now indicate that Kejriwal is working towards taking concrete steps to live up to the promises he has made. He must be given time particularly because he has accepted outside support from the slippery, slimy, corrupt Congress. I wish the party all the best and hope that they succeed so that a strong message goes out to all other parties that times have changed and the citizens no longer wish to be ruled by tyrannical and autocratic democracy. — Jamshed Irani, Mumbai

SO at last the Aam Aadmi Party has joined hands with the Congress to form a government in Delhi. Frankly, I welcome Kejriwal forming the government and becoming the CM. For a new party which contested elections for the first time and which earned people’s massive support, the achievement is just fantastic. I wish Kejriwal and the team the very best of everything in his maiden government formation and all success in politics. This is something unique that a real aam aadmi fought and rose to this level - beating the two mighty political parties and the then CM of Delhi and other political netas and veterans. FINALLY, Arvind Kejriwal has decided to rule Delhi, though support is taken from the Congress. This outer support of Congress may be temporary and may collapse the Delhi government at any time. strongly feel that Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has no alternative but to accept the finding of the commission to prosecute those who are guilty of the offense. It is high time that the entire Congress party must support Rahul Gandhi’s timely action for he is bent on cleaning the party from corruption and other scams to boost the image of the party just before the 2014 general elections. Well done Sonia Gandhi and the Rahul Gandhi for taking people of the country into confidence for eradicating corruption from the public life.
IT is quite heartening to note that Arving Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, is said to have refused security cover as well as the CM house. No doubt, it is a very good gesture on the part of Kejriwal. But he should stick to this stand forever. Many times, it is seen, at the initial stage everybody practices such things and then begins enjoying by giving justifications. Kejriwal, in his over enthusiasm, should not start hitting the Congress and the BJP. First, he should try to fulfill his promises as per the manifesto and then should try to needle his opponents. He knows very well that Congress and BJP are not saintly parties. They have their own axe to grind. But if Kejriwal really works for the betterment of the people, these parties cannot do anything. If they pull down the government, their future will be sealed. Kejriwal should learn from Janata government. In their over enthusiasm, the Janata Party started needling Indira Gandhi instead of paying attention to peoples’ owes. As a result, they got disintegrated. The Congress too should encourage Kejriwal to fulfill his promises without any hesitation. — M.H. Nayak, Mumbai

forget them!
I
t’s the second day of the New Year. The cheer has subsided, hangover has dissipated and we have finally come to our senses, back to reality. So what was your new year’s resolution? For the many city girls who we spoke to, among other things, it was to fall in love, not with an idea (of an ideal man) or a project (I will change him). Several women complain that their relationships often make them ask, “Is this it?” But then, who leads us women to think about ‘more’? The answer to this question can be found in literature and movies. Both these mediums have woven a dazzling web around how your relationship should ideally be, which makes you expect much more out of the man you are dating. Men are chivalrous, charming, loyal, brave and not to forget, splendid in bed. Then, we look at our lives — cheating, disastrous dates, hurt feelings, rescuing yourself and a 5-minute long bed romp that may or may not (on lucky days) involve premature ejaculation. Stepping into the New Year, it’s time to wake up. This wake-up call from us will perhaps make you more satisfied with your relationship and yourself, as it will demarcate fiction from facts which popular romantic comedies and books gladly choose to ignore. Here are romantic lessons from movies and books that you ought to forget, forever.
Start 2014 by dumping all the illogical and unrealistic romantic lessons that movies and books taught you. Priyanka Singh brings you the top 10 romantic notions that you should forget
>> Burst those heart shaped bubbles inspired by movies and books! We tell you about the blatant lies they have been telling us!
If it’s meant to be, it will be — so much so that you don’t have to give a guy your number. Just jot it down in a random book and one day he will find it (if it’s meant to be) and find you (again, only if it’s meant to be). You guys will click and it will be your happily ever after, even if you only knew him for a minute. Yes, we are talking about the popular movie Serendipity! wake up! He can be anyone, for God’s sake! A murderer, rapist, thief, nymphomaniac, gangster... or then a stalker — that’s how he found your number, silly! Don’t start imagining a beach wedding with him in your head. And if he indeed is a good guy (that is, if you have great luck), make it clear in your head that it wouldn’t be if it’s meant to be. You both will have to put in an effort to make it work; you can’t leave it all on destiny. Also, please don’t leave your number around randomly.
Lie #2: nerdy girLs transform into modeLs, aLways She’s All That, Clueless, The House Bunny, The Princess Diaries, Bridget Jones — all of them with the same primary

storyline: A typical nerdy girl will have huge glasses, Lie #3: there’s a prince to save frizzy hair and a pathetic sense of dressing. All she you, honey needs is a hunk to have a crush on, contact lenses, hair Whether it is a witch, a bloodthirsty animal or an evil straightener, some pretty dresses and voila! She becomes stepmother — your saviour is your prince who will a stunner! miraculously find you, fall in love with you and save the day. All that you have to do is blush and wink your unnaturally wake up! A man who loves you only after your long lashes at him. transformation says so much about the jerk’s superficiality! All these women transform because they want to grab the wake up! All Disney movies should be banned, really. You attention of the man they love and not because they want to don’t need anyone to save you except your own brains and change themselves, on their own will. The movie ends with prowess. And the authorities, of course. Your partner is your her looking like a beauty pageant winner and him drooling companion, not your bodyguard. Let us all be a little more over her. However, what these movies don’t show you is that Merida (from the Disney movie Brave) and less Sleeping in a week’s time, that man falls for another hottie and the Beauties, please! transformed nerd goes on to become a career woman who would sometimes laugh at the fact that she fell for a jerk once. to play hard to get, which is all right. But, the problem occurs when they take this to another level – the man gets bored, resorts to Lie #4: “Love means never the idea of ‘there are other fish in the sea’ and having to say you’re moves on. What’s next? You are attending his sorry” wedding reception with a sulk on your face. The famous line of the book and movie, Love We aren’t suggesting not playing hard-to-get Story. If you are in love, your relationship will at all, but knowing where to draw a line is be perfect, both of you will never have fights, important if you don’t want to have regrets. you’ll be like two lost pieces of a puzzle, only No man is ever so passionately in love to wait waiting for each other to complete your lives. for you for months, forget about years! Wake up! Sorry, but what does this line even mean?! When two people fight in a relationship, it only means that they are fighting to save it. Both of you will have fights — a lot of them. But the desire to look beyond those fights and choosing to stand by each other is the real test of a relationship. There will be many apologies made and you will only learn from these mistakes and grow stronger. Fighting doesn’t mean that you are not right for each other, it means that both of you are head strong and opinionated individuals who are mature enough to realise their mistakes and look beyond it.
Lie #7: he’LL Leave her for you You are a beautiful, lonely woman. A sob story, a few instances of staring into each other’s eyes and some flirtatious conversations later, he will leave his current girlfriend, or fiancé if one goes by how things panned out in the movie, The Wedding Planner. And the ex-fiancée is always a bitch, of course. Also, he won’t cheat on you even though he cheated on his ex-fiancé to be with you. So perfect! Wake up! You know what do they call such women? A man stealer. And rightly so! If he is ready to forego a long relationship for you, he wouldn’t be hesitant to do the same next time. And that next time, you will be at the receiving end. Here are our two bits for you: Don’t think of dating a man who is already committed. The other woman is not always and start a new life — all of it to be with you. evil, you know. In fact, for your information, Actually, nobody should do that. Not you are the ‘other’ woman. So steer clear of even you. this pathway.
cherished, not the grandeur of it. So cut him some slack and savour the moment. Even if he has gone on his knees in the bathroom while you were brushing your teeth!
Lie #8: he WiLL Leave his ambition for you
Lie #10: he WiLL knoW What to do
Taking a leaf out of the recent Bollywood hit, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, the geek girl as usual transforms into a babe and the guy, who is so passionate about his career (which is actually quite appealing), foregoes it only to be with the girl.
>> Sarah Jessica Parker’s character in the movie Sex and the City falls in love with Mr. Big who changes for her. However, in real life, this is not how men roll
>> While this man might have booked the entire beach to propose to the woman of his life, expecting the same from your man is being unreasonable
Lie #9: he WiLL propose to you With a grand gesture
There will be professional musicians, hot air balloon, a room full of roses — and amidst all of it, will be pop the ultimate question: Will you marry me? Well, of course it’s common! Didn’t you watch the movies Love Actually, Wedding Crashers, Bed of Roses and many more?
He’ll be a dream in bed and you will have earth shattering orgasms! He would just know everything what turns you on and you’ll have to give him no directions at all.
Wake up! Ladies, he is not Christian Grey (from Fifty Shades of Grey) who has taken classes when it comes to the bedroom Wake up! Two words: Not happening. He Wake up! Agreed, a lot of men indeed moves! He doesn’t know what turns you on will make you his holiday romance, but not a propose to the women of their lives in a and you don’t know these things about him lifetime one. For men who are extremely grand gesture. Just look up YouTube and too. So, give him some time and if he doesn’t ambitious, their career means everything to you’ll find so many heart tugging ones. But, get it right, tell him. Sexual chemistry needs them. Don’t expect them to leave everything, it is not necessary for every man to do the to be built; don’t expect it to be there on which they worked so hard for to achieve, same. It’s the moment that needs to be its own.
Lie #5: a man changes after faLLing in Love Yes, of course, your love will change him and he will become a man tailor made for you. Don’t believe us? We have movies and books to show you: Edwards (both Cullen from Twilight and Richard Gere’s character in Pretty Woman), Mr. Big (Sex and the City) and Mr. Darcy (Pride & Prejudice). What more evidence do you need?! Wake up! Sure, the tiger will shed his stripes and have polka dots on him! All because you are worth it and so special. How romantic! Not! Every hard-hearted, gruff loner is not actually an awesome person who will love you forever underneath it all. It’s his personality and it is going to stay that way. There might be a few little changes, but don’t expect drastic ones to magically occur in him. It will only lead to disappointment and a broken heart.
Lie #6: he’LL Wait for you If The Notebook says so, it must be true, right? He’ll wait for you for years and then when you come back, he’ll build a house for you with his manly hands! Wake up! This notion is what leads women
>> Dear Prince, you can kindly leave as the princess is simply taking a nap and doesn’t need you to rescue her

“We have, as a nation, taken the first step” Priyanka Singh spoke to Petrina D’Rozario, founder & president of WIFT India, on the current representation of women in the film and TV industry and WIFT’s role in attempting to improve it
A
s part of the WIFT (Women in Film & Television International) network, the WIFT Mumbai Chapter is a not-for-profit organisation, dedicated to provide a dynamic platform to facilitate the exchange of ideas, accelerate the professional development and recognise the achievement of women in film, television and other screen based media. We spoke to Petrina D’Rozario, founder president of WIFT India, on her association with the organisation and how can WIFT make a difference when it comes to women in the film and television industry. Tell us more about how you got associated with WIFT. I was studying and working in New Zealand when I was first introduced to the organisation. WIFT New Zealand held regular events to bring professionals from the industry to network with aspiring women who were looking to get a foothold in the industry. How does one become a member of WIFT India? For WIFT India, you can become a member online (www.wift.co.in) and sign up using a debit or credit card. The fee is `2,000 for professional membership, which means one must have work experience in the industry for at least one year and it’s `700 for students who are studying or specialising in any media course. This helps us organise more workshops for our members every month. In what ways does WIFT contribute in
helping women in the film and television industry? WIFT India has been set up to encourage and support women working or wanting to work in the film/TV industry. While New Zealand, Los Angeles and other global chapters are more than 20 years old, India is approaching our second year in an industry which is the largest film producing country! It will be a while before concrete work really shapes up, where WIFT India as a body can suggest legislative changes that support the working conditions of women in the industry. But, for now it’s about forming a strong network of women and men who believe in the platform’s single point vision to make it a strong support structure through mentorships, networking workshops, internships, screening of films, master classes and more. Nothing can be done alone. You can’t be on the by-stands and expect change. WIFT India needs everyone to contribute to make it work, which I can see happening organically. We have directors, cinematographers, editors and technicians willing to place one aspiring woman recommended by WIFT India and take her under their wings to mentor. This is a very big opportunity for those who have no connections, family or friends in the industry, but aspire to hone their skills. We have taken the first step to set up a platform, now it’s up to people to come together and support it. Currently, when it comes to TV, most serials seldom show self-independent, urban
women. Why do you think that is the case? I remember watching Tara, a tele-series in the 90s, which was about three independent women who lived life on their own terms. If a bold subject like that could be produced in the 90s, then why not now? We know TV caters to 90% of rural India, not to you and me, so while we would like to believe that we as a nation are a superpower with a modern outlook to life, it’s still just a notion to rural India and that is being reflected in these soaps. Didn’t you get shocked as a nation with the facts the talk show Satyamev Jayate brought to light? Current TV soaps are doing just that in a fictitious format. They are bringing out stories and making us aware of things that we are otherwise ignorant about. And there are strong women within these soaps that show matriarchs in rural India, which is definitely a strong portrayal of women! So, where is the irony of going backwards when it comes to the portrayal of women in current soaps? It’s merely reflecting what is out there.
In the last year, WIFT India has held panelsessions with stalwarts from the industry talking about this depiction of women on screen — it’s not preaching; the more we talk about it, the more it will get heard and at a very subliminal level, the writers, lyricists, producers, directors will probably think for a heartbeat before panning their lenses unnecessarily on a woman’s bosom or comparing her leg to a piece of tandoori kebab.
When it comes to Indian films, TV and commercials, do you think women are still objectified in the country? If yes, then how do you think that can be changed? Is there any place in the world which has films, TV and commercials where women are not objectified? It’s a vicious circle of audience blaming the filmmakers and filmmakers blaming the audience. The buzz has started, people are voicing their opinions at forums, interviews... the media is talking about it — and this is the beginning of change. Did we hear about this 10 years ago? Women were objectified then Is WIFT in any way trying to change the way too, but now there are voices objecting to it. women are portrayed in television So, we have, as a nation, taken the first step. and films? Change doesn’t happen overnight, nor does According to you, which are the Indian it with one crusader. But, my respect goes women personalities who are bringing a out to Dr. Sharda and Bobby Sista, from change in the Indian film and TV industry? Population First, who have started the drive TV has innumerable! But, from the new producers who are to bring about a change in how women are independent being portrayed in film, TV and advertising. encouraging cinematic brilliance on If this is to be infused into the mindsets of subjects at par with world cinema, I admire those influencing the masses, then we all Guneet Monga as a producer. Kangana nails the sexy secretary look. We love her sense of style and think she looks sophisticated in this outfit. The big belt adds a touch of drama to her look, which saves her from looking aunty. Also, we want to raid her shoe closet. Just look at those beauties!
When we first saw this picture, we thought that Farrah Khan lost a lot of weight. The dress is cute but veering slightly on the nighty side… but come on, everyone needs an off day right? But, give those legs a good dose of the sun, darling!
A new year means new trends. So, throw out the peplum (please!) as Glynda Alves lists out the hot trends for Spring 2014. Get ready girls… ChiC in Chiffon You might associate this fabric with mass produced bridesmaid dresses or saris, but chiffon is going to be super trendy in 2014. This floaty fabric is going to be used in layers to add fluidity and lightness to an outfit. Not convinced? Check out Chanel’s collection — gorgeous, feminine and flattering. We can’t wait to see how high street brands will translate this trend.

Button down shirts We aren’t talking about floral or light denim shirts. The shirt for 2014 means serious business. The boyfriend button down shirt, complete with a stiff white collar, paired with everything from skirts to leggings will be a big trend this year. However, fashion houses are making it even more interesting by pairing it with unusual sleeves and cut outs.
dressy trousers Pants have always been a wardrobe staple, but rarely have they been the centre of attention. Spring 2014 will bring dressy trousers to the forefront. And not how you’re imagining. Pants will be worn under dresses and you can expect to see this look on the red carpet. In fact, Emma Watson was a pioneer when she wore the trousers and dress look to the London screening of Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Hippies rejoice! Fringe is back and it’s not staying on the fringes — it will be everywhere! From dresses and jackets to ponchos and tops, fringe is making a comeback. It’s the embellishment of choice this season, so put away the bling and just fringe out.
Pleated You might associate them with your grandmother or teacher, but sharp edged pleats are making a comeback. They are going to be razor sharp and mostly found on skirts and dresses. Prada and Celine are frontrunners when it comes to this trend.
MetalliC Madness Perhaps it’s a hangover from the party season, but metallic is in for spring. Sequins, foil wrapper dresses and muted gold are all going to be seen in abundance on the red carpet this season. We suggest you follow this trend, but only for parties and weddings. This is a no-no for work.
Make a stateMent >> The runway at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week this past September showcased a number of upcoming trends. (Clockwise from top left) Designer K Nicole features the button down shirt, while Diane Von Furstenberg’s collection was all about metallics. Richard Chai’s gave us dressy pants and Badgley Mischka went all out in fringe
Wear your heart on your sleeve and splashed across your chest. Word play, slogans and pop art will be big this spring. Wear bright tops with toned town trousers or go all out and clash prints. Fashion is all about having fun and it doesn’t get any better than this.
Guess whose shoe closet we don’t want to raid! The loose around the ankle boots are an eye sore. But, the rest of her look is effortless and pretty stylish. All the pieces are basic but paired well together. But, how about a little colour now and then?
1. dress it uP This one is simple, but extremely chic. Pair a V-necked oversized jumper with a plain shirt underneath, with the collar peeking through. If you manage to get hold of a peter-pan collared shirt, even better! Add a wide belt to cinch your waist and give your look some structure. Pair it with sheer tights, a hold-all bag and you’re good to go!
Yeah we know it’s spring and so floral had to be on the list — but Spring 2014 is presenting the humble pattern like you’d never expect. Floral patterns are anything but super feminine now and are almost edgy. Balenciaga and Armani are some of the big names that have showcased this trend.

While a very pretty colour, we don’t know what B-town’s obsession with looking like Indian Barbie is all about! There are other colours you know. Huma looks pretty but cookie cutter in this candy floss outfit. The hair and accessories are also just so typical. Yawn...

attitude liPgloss Attitude Lipgloss, an Amway product, claims to plump up your lips and is enriched with vitamin E. This dermatologically tested lip gloss says it will give you rich, luscious lips. Speaking of first impressions, the shade Luscious Plum is quite a bright pink with purple undertones and a lot of fine shimmer. However, on application, the colour comes off more as a purple pink and thankfully, the glitter doesn’t show up too much on the lips. The sheer formula didn’t really do anything to plump my lips and left them feeling rather dry after a few hours, not living up to its moisturising claim. This is just another lip gloss and given the price, I would probably purchase a gloss that has better colour pay off from another brand. Price `359 where Beauty outlets star rating **
2. half-n-half Don’t want to look too casual, or too dressed up? Pair a bodycon mini skirt with an oversized jumper. The result is a look that is sexy yet laidback. This also makes for a balanced look as the bagginess from the jumper balances out the figure hugging skirt. 3. everyday ChiC For days when you need to be up, ready and out of the door in a matter of minutes, pair an oversized jumper with leggings. Try and pick a jumper that has a cable-knit to add to the charm. Team it with an ox-blood leather sling bag to finish off the look.
4. Crazy Colour Can’t decide which colour you want to wear? We suggest wearing this kaleidoscope jacket from Forever 21. The swirls of colour make it look really attractive while the solid black makes it a good evening pick. PriCe: `939

BAd COMPUTER Y
Don’t put your job in jeopardy this year as Glynda Alves tells you how your own computer can be out to get you
ou’ve just about learnt to deal with that co-worker who’s out to see you get fired before you realise that there is new problem that could get you into trouble at the workplace. And it’s right at your finger tips. That’s correct… your computer could be one of the ways in which you can get into big, big trouble at work. Here’s what you should watch out for… and avoid!
Misuse of eMail How many times have you accidentally sent an email to a wrong friend? Well, at work this is a dangerous game to play. Certain jokes, conversations and venting letters can accidentally reach the wrong hands and land you in a pickle. In addition, many big companies have a firewall to protect information leaving the organisation, so be careful of what you say.
DownloaDing Downloading files, whether they are 1KB or 1MB, is always a tricky situation, especially if it is from the internet or an unknown sender. You could accidentally put the entire office system at risk and lose important information. And if the management ever finds out that it was you who carelessly downloads off the internet, you could be in for some big talks… and maybe action.
Personal files Many people keep personal files on their computers, but how personal can something get when it can be viewed by the public (aka your co-workers)? If you work in a large or even a small company, personal information, letters, job applications to other companies and pictures (don’t ever keep any inappropriate ones at work) could be accessed by others and if they contain questionable information, it could land you into serious trouble.
instant Messaging Most messenger services have a save chat history option and while you may have disabled it, the higher staff may still have records of it. So, avoid bitching about co-workers, bosses and management via the internet since it is recorded.
ConfiDential files

Never keep confidential files of important reports on a public server. This holds especially true if you are in HR and in charge of salaries, leaves and raises. This information should not get into the wrong hands as it can lead to a lot of office politics.

we tell you how to Deal with a Drunken ‘Mistake’ At our office Christmas party, a male colleague got really drunk and started hitting on me. At first, I resisted his advances and he backed off. I have recently joined a new office and to my dismay, I feel that my boss just doesn’t want me there. She is rude and snide and keeps dropping hints about how I shouldn’t expect to last long at the office. Is there a way out? — alisha fatnani, bandra Dear alisha, We are as confused as you are.
Such behaviour is totally uncalled for and can result in a very stressful work environment for you. The first thing you can do is talk your co-workers. Ask them if they have any clue as to why your boss is behaving in such a way — maybe, she is like this with everyone. If you still can’t figure out what’s happening, approaching your boss might be a good idea. Ask her if your work is not up to the standard or if there is any other reason you should “get your CV in order”. Make sure that you don’t come across as accusatory. Your last option, if nothing works out, would be to go to HR and tell them about your problem. send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in before wednesday

It isn't fair to expect him not to be invited just because your relationship went sour. If seeing him is too hard or both of you can't stand the sight of each other at the moment, you could make excuses to skip the events lined up close to your breakup, but only if they're not as important. Make sure both of you are not missing at the event as this will make your family think something is wrong or be compelled to take sides. Simply busy yourself with work till it's easy to pretend everything is okay in each other's company.

The two sides won't see eye to eye and depending on the intensity of the breakup, there might even be some discontent and fights among them. While in normal break ups, you revert back to your original friends or whoever you were closest to before starting the relationship; when it's a family friend, this is a very bad idea. Don't confide in them and don't create a divide. The families have been friends for years, why should your failed relationship ruin that?

PREETIKA RAO’S
LOVE-HATE ACT Preetika Rao is an Indian model, writer and actress. Rao was born in Mangalore and brought up in Mumbai. Her father owns an advertising agency in Mumbai while her elder sister Amrita Rao is also an actress. She had a stint as a journalist in a South publication and then did a few south films. She is now all set to make her small screen debut in the COLORS show ‘Beintehaa’
By Sandeep Hattangadi
Is the show a Muslim social? Yes. For the first time ever, the channel will be focusing on the pan-Muslim milieu with a story of two similar and headstrong individuals, Aaliya played by me and Zain who find themselves in a complex relationship. Produced by Fortune Productions, ‘Beintehaa’ is a story of finding endless love in a relationship born out of obligation. It hit television screens on December 30 from every Monday to Friday at 9 pm on COLORS. How does the love story progress? We have often heard of love stories born out of an accidental meeting or the first glimpse. However, ‘Beintehaa’, breaking traditions, brings to fore a deep love that comes to the fore only after the relationship is over. The storyline portrays Aaliya (Preetika Rao), a traditional Bhopal girl, and Zain (Harshad Arora), a modern Mumbai lad, who are like-minded headstrong people with similar likes and dislikes. As their worlds collide, Aaliya and Zain find themselves bound in a marriage born out of obligation where the only common feeling is hate.
What prompted you to take up this show? Having done films down south, television was a relatively new playing field for me. The story and concept of ‘Beintehaa’ is what drew me to the show and I found myself accepting it almost instantaneously. Aaliya is a spunky Muslim girl who has grown up in Bhopal. She is fairly religious, but is full of life. I hope the audiences will enjoy the sincerity with which we have performed and appreciate this venture that we have undertaken. What is the rest of the cast like? Supporting the pair is a strong
ensemble cast including well-known faces like Suchitra Pillai, Riva Babbar, Rituraj, and Naved Aslam who essay pivotal characters in the show.
Are you open to reality shows? I am a very private person and wouldn’t be comfortable in the reality show milieu. I am happy doing soaps.
Would you like to do Hindi films like your sister Amrita Rao? Yes. I am like the girl next door and would love to do roles like my sister does.

New entry
Adding to the ‘Mahisagar Masti’, fresh face Amish Tanna will be joining the Mehta family this January 2014. According to the track, Amish Tanna is a traditional Kathiawadi hailing from Kathiawad and will form a principal character in the household. Entering as a domestic help, Amish Tanna will cause confusion amongst the lead cast leading to comic misunderstandings. “My character is overly dramatic to a fault. He adds an over-the-top Kathiawadi flair to everything he does. Unlike normal servants, my character doesn’t take orders very well and is constantly interfering in the family’s arguments”, said Amish. few decades ago television was considered as the idiot box meant only for bored housewives with the saas-bahu kitchen politics, Ekta Kapoor being a household name. But the scenario changed when the numero uno star of Hindi cinema Amitabh Bachchan hosted the TV quiz show ‘Kaun Banega Karodpati’ which made television and the advertisers smile. Now the Bachchan magic is all set to repeat itself in a fiction show directed by Anurag Kashyap which will see Bachchan as 20 years younger and the head honcho of a construction conglomerate.
Nawazuddin Siddique and Kay Kay Menon are his co-stars and the show will be telecast on SONY soon. Also on SONY will be Jaya Bachchan’s fictional show ‘Vasundhara’ based on a Gujarati novel and is the story of a single mother. Both the shows are produced by Endemol India. Poonam Dhillon is also acting in a fiction show ‘Ek Nayee Pehchaan’ where she plays a simple illiterate housewife ,on COLORS. Anil Kapoor has already proved himself with the official Indianised version of ‘24’ on COLORS. “Sony has always been instrumental in innovating and creating numerous milestones for the Indian entertainment industry. We are pleased to announce another unique association with Amitabh Bachchan which will further strengthen our relationship with him and take his phenomenal talent into Indian homes by putting him in the lead role in a television fiction show”, said ManJit Singh, CEO of Sony Entertainment Television holding company Multi Screen Media. Looks like the ‘Big’ screen stars will shine on the small screen too.

Target Rs. 75
Business stability, capex development, valuations fortify positive stance: We reiterate our BUY rating (TP: Rs 75) on (1) strong operations – scale-up in container volumes (now similar to run-rate of volumes prior to shift of two large lines) which is likely to sustain, (2) medium-term visibility as capex progresses – gets environment clearance for expansion, (3) attractive valuations (9.3X CY2014E EV/EBITDA), (4) potential pick-up in exim cycle, (5) high rail proportion fending away competition from Hazira (no rail connectivity) and (6) strong growth/profitability from PRCL (trend to continue). Strong scale-up in container volumes; momentum likely to sustain: GPPV has recorded strong scale-up in container volumes over the past three-four quarters and quarterly run-rate is back to the 160,000-165,000 TEUs mark (similar run-rate of volumes prior to shift of the two Maersk lines). We believe this quarterly volume run-rate is sustainable with full impact of new added lines (over the past 2-3 quarters) and ramp-up in volumes of existing lines. We build volumes of 639,000 TEUs in CY2013E and 735,000 TEUs in CY2014E for Pipavav port, which presumes a market share of 14-18% for Pipavav port of the incremental volumes calling at west coast ports. We note that majority of the top global container shipping companies make a call at Pipavav port and hence this market share would be achievable. Medium-term prospects with progress on capex plans; EC issue resolved; set for expansion: Pipavav port has received the environment ministry’s nod to go ahead with port expansion plans. The port is not set to proceed with its capex plans and is likely to meaningfully start incurring capex in CY2014E (project delayed by about 6-9 months due to the clearance issues). GPPV has envisaged a capacity expansion plan of about Rs 11 bn towards increasing container capacity to over 1.5 mn TEUs as well as bulk capacity to about 810 mn tons. Strong PRCL operations; trend likely to continue: PRCL reported strong scale-up in operations with revenues of Rs 1.8 bn in FY2013 and a net PAT of Rs464 mn. The company has declared its first-ever dividend – declared 5% interim dividend for FY201314E. This trend is likely to continue with rising proportion of volumes moving by rail from the port. Revise estimates; reiterate BUY with a target price of Rs 75: We revise our EPS estimates to Rs 3.7 and Rs 4.9 from Rs 3.7 and Rs 4.3 for CY2013E and CY2014E based on slight deferment of capex plans and slightly higher margin assumption for CY2014E. We revise our SOTP-based target price to Rs75 (from Rs 62 earlier) based on the estimate changes and roll-forward of valuation. Our target price of Rs 75 is comprised of (1) Rs59/share for the core port business (12-month forward FCFE valuation), (2) Rs4/share for Pipavav Rail Corporation Ltd (PRCL, 10X FY2015E earnings) and (3) Rs 10/share from 50% of the calculated depreciated replacement value receivable at the end of the concession period. Our target price implies a valuation of about 11X CY2014E EV/EBITDA for the company.

During the quarter ended Q2 FY14, EBITDA has increased by 10.40 percent at Rs. 549.80 million from Rs. 498.00 million in the corresponding quarter of previous year. The company has reported a strong profitable growth in quarter ended 30th September 2013. The company has a diversified product portfolio which covers a range of steel products and lighting products, these diversified product portfolio helps the company minimize the risk associated with slowdown in a single industrial sector and also provides better growth opportunities. On the back of increase in the demand for steel pipes arising from oil and gas, infrastructure, water supply and sanitation projects coupled with expected increase in the penetration of electricity in the country and development of infrastructure both in the private and public sector, which will boost the lighting division sales. We expect the company to post a CAGR of 12 percent and 14 percent in its top-line and bottom-line respectively. Hence, we recommend ‘BUY’ on the stock with a target price of Rs 86 on the stock.

espite the slowing economy, spiraling inflation and uncertain global economic conditions, investors reaped rich dividends from stocks as their wealth jumped to more than Rs 70 lakh crore this year. According to the Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) latest assessment the 30-share Sensex crossed 21,483 points in December while the key index has gained more than 1,653 points so far this year compared to its closing level of about 19,426 points in 2012, reveals Assocham. The 50-share Nifty too gained significantly this year. The index reached as much as 6,415 points
this month and has gained nearly 370 points in 2013 compared to closing levels of about 5,905 points last year, said D S Rawat ,Secretary General ASSOCHAM. Taking a look at market capitalization, the overall value increased more than Rs 20,000 crore so far this year with the total valuation standing at nearly Rs 70 lakh crore, adds the paper. “Foreign investors continued to remain a key driver for the equities market even though the market witnessed wild swings occasionally amid continuing uncertainties over political developments and reforms activities”, said Rawat. Notwithstanding concerns about investment climate in the country, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) put in at least 20 billion dollars so
far this year. In 2012, these entities had pumped in more than USD 24 billion, highlights the paper. “This year overseas investors seemed to have preferred sectors such as pharmaceuticals, software and financial services”, added Rawat. There are more than 1,740 registered FIIs in the country while the number of registered sub-accounts stands at around 6,400, points out the paper. In recent years, the highest overseas inflows into the stock market were witnessed back in 2010 when the amount of such money reached about USD 29 billion, added its paper. “With hopes of stable government and improved business climate, 2014 is expected to be a much better year for the market”, further added Rawat.
RBI Warns Banks On Rising Exposure To Large Cos By A Business Reporter
F
lagging the potential threat of contagion to the banking system in case a large corporate fails, the Reserve Bank has hinted at bringing down the single entity and group exposure limits for lenders. “A review of the extant single and group borrower exposure limits would considerably enhance the stability of the banking sector,” RBI said in its half-yearly Financial Stability Report released earlier this week. The existing exposure norms, which have evolved in the context of growth and developmental needs, are higher than the international standards as well, making a case for lowering the caps, it said. Currently, the single entity exposure limit is pegged at 25% of the total incremental assets of a bank in any given year. The cap for a group can even top 50% of the total capital of a bank. Against this, the total average is only 25% globally. Though large banks such as SBI and ICICI often cross this limit, they
normally they bring it down to the prescribed limit by the end of the given fiscal. Currently, SBI has crossed the cap in two large government-run firms — Bharat Heavy Electricals and Indian Oil Corporation. “Total loss to the banking system from the failure of the corporate/group will typically be distributed across banks in proportion to their individual exposures to the corporate/ group. If, in the case of one or more banks, the loss is large enough to cause distress to the bank, then there will be further losses to the banking system due to the contagion caused by the distressed bank/banks,” said the report. “Depending on the importance of the distressed bank/banks in the network of interbank exposures, the contagion losses may be substantial,” it added. The report also makes an analysis of possible scenarios saying that in several cases the contagion losses are significant and could exceed the direct losses caused by the failure of the corporate group.
“The failure of a large corporate group could result in a total loss of over 60% of the banking system’s capital when the LGD (loss given default) is 100% and over 50% of the banking system’s capital when the LGD is 60%,” it said. The report further said that “such risks posed by a large corporate or corporate group are sought to be minimised by large exposure limits prescribed by regulators”. The RBI report also quoted from a study conducted by the IMF and the World Bank in FY12 which said exposure norms in the country were high. “The large exposure limit of 40%, which can exceptionally be brought to 50% for infrastructure exposures - for a group borrower, is significantly higher than the large exposure limits of 25% which is considered good international practice... This limit has the potential to allow the default of one particular consolidated borrower to cause a serious loss of capital in a banking company,” the FSR said, quoting from the study.

Don’t resign to a sexless destiny
I am 53 years old married woman with grownup children. My husband is 56. I stopped had a menopause a year ago. We both do get sexual urges but feel guilty while making advances to each other due to our ages. Menopause is said to be the end of sex life. Why is it so difficult then to accept this fact? A LOT of people pre-suppose that sex life is all over at fifty and resign themselves to a sexless destiny. This tendency is further fueled by jokes and folklore and the glorification of youth by our modern society. The truth is that most people are sexually active throughout their lives. course without your presuppositions.
Never judge a book by its cover
I am a student at an engineering college in India and shall be going for higher studies to the USA soon. I now feel a real need of a good friend in my life (I don’t know why my heart says that it should be a girl, maybe I am getting a bit sexual or because I am influenced by my friends). It is not that I am in a state of depression. The problem is that I hate girls. Their presence makes me feel awkward. I don’t have a personal enmity with any girl. What should I do? Approach a girl or wait for the one God has made for me? I CAN feel the agony in your question. First of all, it is very normal and natural at your age to have sexual feelings, and of course these feelings very naturally include a girl. You also talk of an emotional need of a confidante in your life, someone with whom you can be yourself and share your innermost thoughts. This need is also very normal as man is not only a physical being but also an emotional being. However, a life partner who fits the bill physically and emotionally will not suddenly fall into your lap nor can you go shopping for one.
What you need to do is to remain open and continue to be socially accessible i.e. besides remaining in contact with girls in your college or where you live, you could take up some short courses like public speaking, personality development, also music or computer classes, theatre workshops etc. The point is to increase your social circle so that the right person has an opportunity to enter your life. (If nothing else, you will gain in knowledge, skills, creative satisfaction and lots of new friends). Also, ‘never judge a book by its cover’. Your impression of girls seems to be based on appearances or some minimal interaction. If you keep your judgment aside, and get to know them better without a bias, you may find your initial impression changing with some of them. `3600-crore deal with AgustaWestland scrapped N Afternoon Despatch & Courier
MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JANUARY 2, 2014
EW DELHI: India on Wednesday cancelled its Rs.3,600-crore deal with Anglo-Italian firm AgustaWestland for supply of 12 VVIP choppers to the Air Force in view of charges that kickbacks to the tune of Rs.360 crore were paid in it. The decision to scrap the 2010 deal was taken nearly a year after reports surfaced that two top officials of the company had allegedly paid bribes to bag the contract. Former IAF chief S.P. Tyagi is one of the accused in the case, which is probed by CBI. The cancellation came after a meeting between Defence Minister A.K. Antony with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here earlier in the day, Defence Ministry sources told PTI. The deal was for supply of 12 helicopters for VVIPs and out of these AgustaWestland has already delivered three. India has now decided to go in for arbitration with the Anglo-Italian
firm, Defence Ministry sources said. The government had frozen the contract in February last year for supply of 12 AW-101 VVIP choppers to the IAF after allegations that Rs 360 crore were paid as bribe. Two top officials of the company were accused and arrested in Italy in this regard. India had already made 30 per cent payment and further payment was in the pipeline for three more helicopters when the freeze was ordered. The Defence Ministry had issued two show cause notices to the Anglo-Italian firm during the last ten months. The firm denied any wrongdoings in its response but the government rejected their contention. The Defence Ministry had also got access to the documents seized from the alleged middlemen in Italy and they are also expected to have formed the basis for the scrapping of the contract, sources said.

Corey Anderson scores the fastest
ODI century off 36 deliveries as New Zealand overwhelm Windies
Q
UEENSTOWN, NEW ZEALAND: New Zealand allrounder Corey Anderson cracked the fastest century in oneday international cricket history as New Zealand thrashed the West Indies by 159 runs in a rain-shortened third ODI. His whirlwind performance in partnership with Jesse Ryder, who smacked the sixth fastest century of all time in that form of the game, took New Zealand to 283-4 in a match reduced to 21 overs each side. The West Indies then wilted when faced with a daunting run rate of nearly 13.5 an over and could only manage 124-5 in reply. The series is now all square at 1-1 with two matches to play. Anderson -- who finished not out 131 -- took a mere 36 deliveries to reach his century, beating the previous record set by Shahid Afridi, who needed 37 balls to reach three figures playing for Pakistan against Sri Lanka in 1996. Ryder faced 46 deliveries to reach his ton. The burly Anderson hit 14 sixes, the third highest in an ODI innings behind Rohit Sharma (16) for India against Australia two months ago and Australia's Shane Watson (15) against Bangladesh in 2011. Anderson and Ryder put on 191 for the fourth wicket as they hammered the West Indies attack. After the start of the game was delayed five hours because of the weather, Ryder set the tone for the New Zealand innings when he cracked a boundary from the first ball he faced.
ALL GUNS BLAZING... Corey Anderson in full flow during his innings against West Indies on Wednesday.
The demise of fellow opener Martin Guptill (one) was only a matter of time. He was all at sea against the bounce generated by Jason Holder and after surviving two caught behind appeals there was no mistake with the third. Brendon McCullum belted 33 off 11 deliveries as New Zealand raced past 50 in just 26 balls and Ross Taylor came and went quickly for nine. That brought Anderson to the wicket to join Ryder in a rollicking partnership for which the West Indies had no answer. Anderson took 20 deliveries to reach his 50, passing the milestone in an over in which he hit four sixes in a merciless attack on the usually tight bowling of spinner Sunil Narine. In a near chanceless innings he only faced 47 balls for his 131, while Ryder faced 51 balls for his 104 which included five sixes. The West Indies reply was quickly in trouble when Johnson Charles was removed without scoring by the third ball. Llendl Simmons (13) and Kieran Powell (one) fell cheaply to reduce the West Indies to 19-3 in the fourth over. Captain Dwayne Bravo crafted a well-compiled 56 not out and Narsingh Deonarine added 29 as the West Indies abandoned any thought of a run chase and were reconciled to batting out time. BRIEF SCORES: New Zealand 283 in 21 overs [Jesse Ryder 104, Corey Anderson 131] beat West Indies 124 for five I 21 overs [Dwayne Bravo not out 56] by 159 runs.
Afridi hails new ODI century record holder Johnson warns England not to back away
KARACHI: Pakistan allrounder Shahid Afridi hailed New Zealand batsman Corey Anderson, who broke his longstanding record for the fastest oneday century -but admitted he had never heard of him before. Anderson bettered Afridi's 17-year-old record by one ball, reaching the three-figure mark off just 36 balls against the West Indies in Queenstown in the third one-day international. Afridi set the mark aged just 16, in only his second limited-overs match, against Sri Lanka in Nairobi in October 1996. He said he had never heard of Anderson before today. "I never heard his name and early morning my nephew told me about his feat and I sort of said the first news of 2014 is of my record being broken," Afridi told AFP. "But I must say it's a great
achievement and Anderson deserves all the praise. It needs a super effort to score a hundred off 36 balls," Afridi said. "Records are meant to be broken and I knew it would be broken some day." Afridi admitted he had hoped the record would last until he quit the game. "I sort of wanted this record to stand until I retire because it has been a big pride for Pakistan and for me and whenever my name comes the record is mentioned," he said. "Now Anderson's name will come but I am sure with the advent of Twenty20 cricket this record will surely be bettered in the future." He said he had always expected West Indian Chris Gayle or Australian David Warner to break the record. "I had never expected it to be broken by a new player," said Afridi.
S
YDNEY: Destructive paceman Mitchell Johnson has set the scene for a tetchy final Ashes Test by claiming that England's batsmen are deliberately backing away from fast bowlers as an unsettling tactic. While it is normal for batsmen to walk away from a delivery if anyone in the crowd interferes with their line of sight, Johnson said he suspects the regularity with which it has happened during the series indicates England are doing it for other reasons. The fiery left-armer said he expects Alastair Cook's team to continue to do so in the fifth and final Test in Sydney starting on Friday. Australia are chasing a 5-0 Ashes series whitewash for only the third time against England. "That's how they play the game and have always played the game since I've been playing," Johnson said. "It's always happened so I don't think they'll change. It definitely is frustrating when it happens all the time but that's part of the game, it's part of their tactics." The issue came to a head during the fourth Test in Melbourne won by Australia by eight wickets, when star English batsman Kevin Pietersen walked away during Johnson's run-up. It infuriated Johnson, who is the leading wicket-taker in the series, and he threw the ball in
James Faulkner and Nathan Lyon during a practice session ahead of the final test. Pietersen's direction and exchanged words with the batsman. Johnson warned that he would respond if England try it again in Sydney. "The only thing I regret is throwing the ball," he said. "I think that was probably a little bit inappropriate but the rest of it was fine. I just let (Pietersen) know that he needed to stop doing it. The sight screens are big enough, he should be watching the game. I won't back down if it happens again."

First individual Oly medallist Jadhav still waiting Padma Award
By Philem Dipak Singh
NEW DELHI: A technicality in the government rules for posthumous Padma Awards has rendered India's first individual Olympic medallist K D Jadhav ineligible for the coveted civilian honour and his son Ranjit is so aghast that he now wants to throw away the bronze his "forgotten" father won in 1952. Wrestler Jadhav was the first Indian to win an individual Olympic medal in 1952 in Helsinki but is the only one among the entire lot of country's Olympic medallists not to have been conferred with the Padma Awards. All of India's individual Olympic medallists from 1996 Games onwards have been conferred with Padma Awards and only Jadhav who died in 1984 has been left out. A Home Ministry rule on posthumous conferment of Padma Awards says, "The award is normally not conferred posthumously. However, in highly deserving cases, the Government could consider giving an award posthumously if the demise of the person proposed to be honoured has been recent, say within a period of one year preceding the Republic Day on which it is proposed to announce the award." Going by this, it would be difficult for Jadhav to get the honour but his son Ranjit wants his father to be conferred with the Padma Bhushan by changing the rule just like recent changes which allowed for sportspersons to get Bharat Ratna. "My father brought laurels to the country by winning the bronze medal in 1952 Helsinki Games. He was the first Indian to win an individual Olympic medal but he has been forgotten now. I feel it's better to throw away the Olympic medal into the Arabian Sea," Ranjit told PTI from his home in Karad in Western Maharashtra. "If the government can change the rule recently to allow sportspersons to get the Bharat Ratna, why can't they do it in the case of Padma Awards," he said. Ranjit said that government can consider his father's case as an exceptional situation as all the other individual Olympic medal winners after Jadhav (from Leander Paes onwards) have won Padma Awards but not him. "It is a case of the person who achieved the laurel first being ignored while those who followed him have been recognised," said 42-year-old Ranjit, the only son of Jadhav. "It took 44 years for an Indian to win an individual Olympic medal (by Paes in 1996 Atlanta) after my father. And it took 56 years for a wrestler to win an Olympic medal (by Sushil Kumar in 2008 Beijing) after my father. I am not against them getting the Padma Awards. But, is it not a humiliation to my father that he got the first individual Olympic medal and he was not conferred with Padma Awards while those who won the medals later, long time back, have got the awards?" Ranjit asked.

ALSAD: A splendid rearguard action by their batsmen and three quick wickets have kept Mumbai in contention for a berth in the quarterfinals even as Gujarat would also fancy their chances as their Ranji Trophy Group A contest is headed for an exciting finish, here. In a chase of 175, Gujarat are 67 for three and need to bat cautiously to score the remaining runs while Mumbai would go all out to remove the seven remaining batsmen to move to the knockout stage. Beginning the day at 76 for four, Mumbai scored 273 to set a 175-run target for the hosts. Overnight batsmen Hiken Shah and Iqbal Abdulla, both on 4, added 60 runs for the fifth wicket. Their partnership was broken by Rakesh Dhruv when the left-arm spinner had Abdulla (38) caught but the following batsmen kept fighting for Mumbai. Akshar Patel denied Shah (48) a half-century but Pravin Tambe played a significant knock of 42 runs and then Shardul Thakur (22) and Javed Khan (23) came up with useful knocks to shore up the Mumbai second innings total. Jasprit Bumrah (4/68) and Askhar Patel (3/71) shared seven wickets between them for Gujarat. Mumbai then put Gujarat on shaky ground by dismissing Smit Patel (6), Samit Gohel (0) and skipper Parthiv Patel (5) cheaply, with Abdulla removing both the openers. Brief Scores: Mumbai: 154 and 273 in 103.3 overs. (Hiken Shah 48, Pravin Tambe 42; Jasprit Bumrah 4/68, Askhar
Saurasish Lahiri took seven wickets to lead Bengal into the knockouts after they defeated Tamil Nadu in Chennai. Patel 3/71) lead Gujarat: 253 and 67/3 in 22 overs.(Askhar Patel 25 batting; Iqbal Abdulla 2/11) by 98 runs.
DELHI OUT OF THE RACE AS SEHWAG, GAUTI FLOP YET AGAIN NEW DELHI: Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir were dismissed cheaply in yet another pathetic batting show by Delhi, who are now staring at a big defeat against table toppers Karnataka in their final Tanji Trophy group league match. Having conceded a first innings lead of 87 runs after Karnataka scored 289 in their first innings, Delhi were tottering at 132 for six at stumps on day three with a lead of 45 runs and four wickets in hand. Sehwag's (11)
BCCI decides on Ranji quarter final venues
MUMBAI: The Cricket Board has decided upon the venues of the four Ranji Trophy quarter final games irrespective of who, from among the contestants, advance to the knockout stage of the tournament from the league phase that ends. "We have decided that the knock out games are to be played at identified venues. The quarter final venues are: Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Moti Baug ground in Vadodara and Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore," said BCCI general manager (game development), Prof Ratnakar Shetty.
woeful first-class season might have ended as he was trapped by a HS Sharath delivery that hit him below knee-roll having cut back a little. The umpire had little hesitation in giving him out. He had slashed one for four over slips in his 34-ball stay. Sehwag's Ranji season ended with 234 runs at a dismal average of less than 20 in 13 innings with a second innings 50 against Haryana. .Brief Scores: Delhi 202 & 132 for 6 (Gautam Gambhir 26, Virender Sehwag 11, Ronit More 3/27) lead Karnataka 287 (Karun Nair 105, Stuart Binny 88, Varun Sood 3/93, Ashish Nehra 3/39) by 47 runs.
LAHIRI TAKES 7 AS BENGAL BEAT TN BY 4 RUNS TO MAKE QUARTERS CHENNAI: Exploiting a spinfriendly track, Saurashish Lahiri wreaked havoc with a career-best seven-wicket haul as Bengal sealed a spot in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinals after a gap of six years, courtesy their narrow fourrun win over formidable Tamil Nadu. Needing 185 to win, Tamil Nadu, starting the day at 102 for one, were shot out for 180 as Bengal got six points from the match to take their tally to 24 from eight games. With Baroda on the verge of losing their match against Saurashtra, having conceded first innings lead, Bengal have ensured their passage to the lasteight stage. The victory comes as a major boost as it came on a pitch that was virtually kept under-prepared by the host association in order to ensure a smooth passage into knock-out.

F
ormula One star Lewis Hamilton has been branded 'arrogant and insensitive' for posting pictures of his skiing holiday online just 48 hours after Michael Schumacher's horrific crash. Some of the images uploaded to the Mercedes driver's Instagram page show him cross-country skiing
without a helmet - a safety feature credited with saving Schumacher from instant death. The seven-time champion is fighting for his life in Grenoble Hospital with devastating brain injuries after hitting his head on a rock on the French resort of Meribel on Sunday.
Hamilton has also posted a video in which he performs jumps on a snowmobile alongside the caption: 'This is what we do in the Megazone!' However, this appears to have been uploaded the day before Schumacher's accident. Earlier this week, Hamilton tweeted a message of support to the seven-time champion, saying: 'Mine & my families prayers & thoughts are with Michael & his family. I wish him a quick recovery. God Bless him. The Hamiltons'. But his pictures have provoked a backlash among some F1 fans who have accused him of 'horrendously bad taste'. Nikko1990 wrote: 'Very insensitive given a certain ex race driver’s current condition in hospital.' Ciger11 posted: 'Shame on you' while Automobilefunk called Hamilton an 'arrogant and insensitive p****'. Spit4ire added: 'If u check the f1 web site the whole of f1 rallies for shummi except it would seem lewis who in horrendously bad taste posts loads of skiing piccys while he lies almost dying from a skijng accident. 'He really should think a little and take these down before it harms his good name.' Others pointed to the fact he wasn't wearing a helmet in the pictures which were taken on a break with his disabled brother Nic, 28.

Up next for the world No. 8 star will be Slovenian Aljaz Bedene in the quarterfinals. Schumacher improving but still in danger after ski accident
G
RENOBLE, FRANCE: Formula One legend Michael Schumacher remained in an induced coma today after spending a third night in hospital with severe brain injuries sustained during a skiing accident in the French Alps. The German racing great entered the new year in a critical condition with his family at his bedside and doctors unsure of his future after a second operation to remove a blood clot in his brain. The seven-time world champion fell and slammed his head on a rock while skiing off-piste on Sunday at the upmarket Meribel ski resort. Reports the 44-year-old was left fighting for his life stunned the sports world and legions of Formula One fans. On Tuesday doctors were surprised by a slight improvement in his condition which allowed them to perform the second nearly twohour long procedure, but said he was "not out of danger" yet. JeanFrancois Payen, head of the intensive care unit at the hospital in the French Alpine city of Grenoble, warned that Schumacher was not out of the woods. "We cannot speculate on the future," he said. "We cannot say he is out of danger but we have
gained some time." He said scans showed that the removal of the bleeding had been done in a "satisfactory manner", but ruled out Schumacher's transfer from the hospital as it could be "dangerous". Doctors have said that Schumacher, due to turn 45 on January 3, has age and physical fitness on his side. He had been put in a medically induced coma to spur recovery. His temperature has also been reduced to around 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) to reduce swelling. By being unconscious, the brain is also switched off to sounds, light and other triggers that cause the organ to use up oxygen as it processes the stimuli. Kehm told reporters at the hospital that he was not skiing at high speed when the accident happened. "He seems to have hit a rock as he took a turn. It was a chain of unfortunate circumstances." Kehm added that the accident could have happened even "at 10 kilometres (six miles) per hour" and took place during "a normal turning manoeuvre". Schumacher's condition has attracted attention from around the world and several people have tried to sneak through the hospital and approach the former racer, she said. "There apparently was a person dressed up as a priest, who tried to get near Michael. I am asking everyone to let the doctors work and leave the family spend peaceful time with Michael." Asked whether the priest was a journalist, she said: "It's what I was told... We have clearly noted that people are trying to get beyond the press room here in the clinic. It's revolting, in my opinion." HELMET SMASHED 'IN TWO' A source close to an investigation into the off-piste accident at the upmarket ski resort of Meribel told AFP that Schumacher's helmet, which medics say saved his life, was smashed "in two" by the impact. According to his manager Sabine Kehm, Schumacher was skiing "with a small group of friends" as well as his 14-year-old son Mick.
Neatly matched knees may be behind Usain Bolt’s speed L
ONDON: A pair of very symmetrical knees may be behind the record-breaking speed of Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, the world's fastest man, a new study suggests. Researchers from Northumbria University, UK, found that the key to sprinting could be all in the similarity of your kneecaps. They came to the conclusion after investigating the knees of Jamaicans, believed to be the finest sprinters in the world. In 1996 they measured the width of the knees of 300 children aged about eight. A decade later they measured their knees again, then in 2010 they asked them to compete in a sprint. Only 163 of the original sample stayed with the study until
2010, but those who did had more symmetrical knees — implying that knee symmetry is either an indicator of diligence or of a willingness to sprint, 'The Times' reported. Among those who did sprint, speed was also correlated with symmetry. "Jamaica is really disproportionately represented among the top-class sprinters around the world," Professor John Manning from Northumbria University said. He added that more data was needed, but there was an indication that the Jamaican children were more symmetric than their Caucasian counterparts. A possible explanation for the link between similar knees and sprinting success
is that it represents a simple mechanical advantage. "If you are symmetric in your legs, your legs are going to be more efficient. Any tiny increases in efficiency are going to translate into an effect in running," Manning said. "That is the least interesting explanation and I don't think the right one," he said. "The other explanation is the body has genetic instructions to develop symmetrically. When you think about it though, it is very difficult for the body to develop symmetrically. How does it do it? We don't know. But usually there is a millimetre or so difference. So this trait is a test of the viability of genes," Manning added.
