scam by the Public Works Department (PWD) has come to light with the involvement of engineers and officials of the department. It has been found that 37 vehicles used by the PWD department officers have undergone service and maintenance in the last four years for a total cost of Rs.14 crore, whereas bill for purchasing all of them would not cross over Rs.1.50 crore. CITY OPINIONS

Do you think the state government should take stern action against transport unions for holding the public to ransom with frequent strikes? Varsha Ganesh Entrepreneur YES For no fault of ours, we are troubled. There should be some kind of punishment for unions that keep going on strikes.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, APRIL 3, 2014

Punit Bhavsar Working Professional YES The unions can't hold the public to ransom for their problems with some officials. They should be taught a lesson so that they don't trouble the public which is not at fault.

Rashmi Iyer Student YES These frequent strikes are too much of a trouble. There has to be some way to let the unions know that they can't keep going on strikes like this and inconveniencing the public.

Swati Raghavan Working Professional YES Only then, I think, will they reduce the frequency of strikes.

Is it or is it not – closing down we meant! Ever since it was reported that B. Merwan and Co. at Grant Road, makers of Mumbai's most delicious mawa cakes, was closing down on the last day of the financial year, the mourning has begun. But it is April 4, and nothing yet, and it's business pretty much as usual at this 100-year-old Irani 'chai' place.

By Avinash Lohana

E

ven as the news of B. Merwan and Co. at Grant Road, the “mawa cake men”, postponing their imminent closure from March 31st to the second week of April started making its rounds, lovers of its signature confection had begun to mourn the passing of yet another Irani cafe. And the queue outside the 100-year-old establishment has now increased, seemingly with everyone wanting to relish their last bites of mawa cake and sip the traditional Irani 'chai', before the place downs shutters. The cult Irani cafes, which were introduced to Mumbai (and some other parts of the country including Hyderabad and Pune) in the early part of the 20th century, were enjoyed by writers, artists, journalists and professors, as well as the aam janata, have been closing down with a dismal, metronomic regularity, victim of the lure of high-priced real estate, coupled with the changing aspirations of the community's gen-next. So every time one more bites the dust, the cries of anguish from regulars grow louder! Established mostly in the island city (with a few dotting the suburban landscape, mostly near stations, at one time Mumbai had 1,300 Irani cafes. There are only 300 in existence today. Farakh Shokri, co owner of Kyani Cafe in Marine Lines, says that one of the prime reasons for this sudden closure of so many Irani cafes is mostly because the younger gen-

eration have stopped showing interest. He said, “The younger generation are now qualified professionals and hence do not want to involve themselves in business which requires a 365 days' commitment. Moreover, many have shifted abroad so there is no next generation to continue this business.” Dr. Mansoor Showghi Yezdi, maker of the widely applauded documentary 'Cafe Irani chai' echoes the same, saying, “Since the older generation were not very qualified, the Iranis wanted their children to get proper education. The younger generation have become doctors, engineers, architects and have also shifted overseas, hence there is less scope for them to take over the business.” Ironically, B. Merwan completes

100 years since it opened in 1914, ordinarily a reason for celebration. But the kind of publicity this particular closure has generated is still amazing, almost like one! Says Yezdi, “This proves the city is still very interested in them”. “The relationship between Indians and the Iranis is very old. When we came to India, we were welcomed with open arms and were given opportunity to flourish. The bun 'maska' and the Irani 'chai' have always been appreciated by the people of India and this shows their love and affection for us. So, I don’t think Iranis will ever lose their charm in India,” he added. The traditional architecture that Iranian cafes host has also enjoyed prominence in Mumbai. Polish bentwood chairs, conventional marble top tables, and ceiling fans

which seems like have been there forever, all these are a common sight in every Iranian cafe. Is their air of infinite age part of the reason why perhaps youngsters may not want to be associated with them? Shokri said, “Though there are a few who, under the guise of modernisation, suggest we change the interiors, about 70 per cent of my crowd swear by this architecture and would not be very happy if I change the way my cafe looks.” At the moment, it is not even clear whether Merwan's is actually closing down as Shokri refuses to confirm or deny anything. Meanwhile, the lines outside the bakery continue to be long and winding, as the mawa cakes emerge from the oven, piping hot at 5 am, only to be wiped out by 7 am. If you want some, better to phone ahead and order a parcel!

‘Kaun aayega’ fever seizes Amrika

Azad Shrivastav | ADC

Someday perhaps the Central Library building, with its impressively elegant steps, will finally have completed the restoration it has been undergoing for the past several years. The latest we hear is that (as usual) the Central government has decided it has better things to do with its money and work has pretty much stopped. Or if it is continuing, it must be when the whole city is asleep, a highly unlikely eventuality, considering that even roadwork, which should be done at night, is done in the mornings at peak traffic time. Currently, the Central Library with its 100,000 books, also the home of the Asiatic Society and one of the only two copies extant of Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy, is a sad place to visit these days. However, on an early evening ten days ago, the steps were a transformed place as our picture will show. As people gawked and a crowd built up, designers, make-up men and a phalanx of cameras were set up for the pretty group of models who then lounged around on the cement structure as if they had not a concern or care in the world. Vishwanath Salian | ADC

Notice how, if three of us get together, it is enough to start the “kaun aayega” ball rolling? A nation with politics in its very DNA will hardly be surprised to know that the diaspora of Indian Americans is pretty much doing the same. Albeit at a much more sophisticated level. According to a press release from the US India Political Action Committee (USINPAC), the political voice of 2.7 million Indian Americans, “India’s hotly contested parliamentary elections are being increasingly viewed in the United States as one of most important elections since the independence of the country. Therefore, in order to keep abreast of developments in India, an increasing, large and varied number of people all across America are dialing into a unique conference call that takes place every week, and discusses these issues. “Though of interest and open to everyone, most callers are having more than a passing interest in India – they want to get expert opinion on the election trends in India, or to understand the economic policies of various

foreign policy.” Analysts and other experts are in great demand for these conference calls. Two weeks ago, Dr. Jagdeep S. Chhokar, the founder member of Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), a website we refer to often and that is working for government and electoral change in India, was among them. Apparently everybody wants to know everything because major policy and business decisions would depend on the outcome of these elections. “The aim to provide a better understanding of India to the U.S. members so that bilateral relations which are seeing

a rocky present, have a cooperative future“, said Sanjay Puri, the chairman of USINPAC. And the calls will continue till May 16, when it will all be over, bar the shouting.

How does that work?

Looking at the list of candidates that Abu Azim Azmi of the Samajwadi Party has put together for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections from Mumbai, one is almost tempted to feel sorry for him. There is his son standing in the north central constitutency, against none other than the redoubtable Priya Dutt. He may be a name, but it is more page 3 than politics. Then in the Mumbai north constituency against Sanjay

Nirupam of the Congress and Gopal Shetty of the BJP, both serious contenders for the post, they have fielded Kamlesh Yadav, still to make his mark. Against Eknath Gaikwad in the south central constutuency they have Kashinath Pasi, who is facing criminal cases, and of whom Azmi said he had been fielded “to win” from Mumbai South Central. But the icing on the cake is that loudmouth from Bollywood with neither talent nor much else, Kamal Khan, from Northwest constituency, against Mahesh Manjrekar, and Gurudas Kamath. With not a single redeeming element, it would certainly seem that the Samajwadi Party is scraping the bottom of the barrel! Imagine voting for a man whose publicity machine thinks it is a good April Fool's joke to announce he is withdrawing his candidature. And then he actually announced it was a joke, that he had filed his nomination and proceeded to congratulate voters from the ward. Which includes this writer who is not amused. We would much rather vote for Rakhi Sawant.

She's on top!

Idly browsing the net for electionrelated information, we googled 'mumbai north' and clicked on 'news' and were amused to see that the first ten results pertained to – Rakhi Sawant. We have to admit (and admire) the woman's determination to stay on top and her success in doing so. Also her boldness in announcing that she is illiterate and has assets of Rs.15 crore!

Finally more hostels!

State government grants `14 crore for MU's new hostels By Yatin Ingle

F

ollowing ADC's story (November 6, 2013) about the Mumbai University (MU) ignoring the construction of two hostels at the Kalina Campus, the state government on Wednesday declared a monetary aid of Rs.14 crore to be provided to the varsity for con-

ADC IMPACT struction of the hostels. According to the GR, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in 2006 had initiated the 'Bapu Jagjeevanram Chhatrawas Scheme’ (MSJE) for 100 girls and 100 boys belonging to the reserved categories. The scheme for construction of such hostels for girls is in operation since the third fiveyear plan while for the boys, the same was started from 1989-90. The objective is to enable and encourage students belonging to scheduled castes to attain quality education. On April 1, 2014, the MU re-

ceived a grant of Rs.3.72 crore from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment towards construction of separate hostels for boys and girls belonging to the Scheduled Castes in the Kalina Campus. While the total cost of construction is Rs.14 crore, the state government has released the first installment of Rs.3.72 crore to the varsity. The two hostels will consist of ground plus four structures which will accommodate 96 girls and 100 boys in two separate hostels. The MU has declared that it has already found land for the hostels and the construction work will be begin soon. Dr. Nareshchandra, Pro Vice Chancellor, MU said, “In 2012, the MU had written to the state government and the minsitry had been in the process of releasing funds. Finally, the government has released the first installment and with that the MU has stepped ahead with the construction work. The two hostels will be equipped with all the necessary facilities and the construction will be completed soon”.

The dead can't rest in peace here! Nullah water overflowing into St Anthony’s church cemetery sparks fear of outbreak of dreaded diseases By Tariq Khan

T

he St. Anthony’s church cemetery is facing water logging menace for the past several months due to the adjoining nullah water seeping into their compound. But since last month the problem has aggravated as the water flow is blocked by mud dumped beside the cemetery due to the Sion-Panvel highway road widening work being done nearby. Church authorities recently gave a written complaint to M-east ward describing their plight. “We are facing a serious problems. Mud is being dumped on the side of the road and some of it has fallen into the nullah and has blocked it. As a result the nullah water has now seeped into our cemetery making it difficult for us to bury the dead. Besides, water logging

may cause the spread of diseases like malaria. Since we have over 1,400 parishioners (families) and 400 school students regularly entering our church premises this may lead to an epidemic,” stated Fr. Patrick D’Mello, Parish priest of the church, in his written complaint to the ward office. Surjay Aguiar, a committee member of the church complains: “When we approach contractor J Kumar, who is doing the road widening work for which truck loads of mud has been dumped on the side of Sion-Panvel highway along our our Church, he blames it on the Tata Power cable laying work. Tata Power blames J Kumar. We fear for the lives of our school students and families visiting the church. Buried bodies do not decompose due to waterlogging and there is every chance of

outbreak of dreaded diseases.” Paul Martin Fernandes, a trustee and group leader in the church confirms that water-logging has been severe for the past one month which has caused fear among the parishioners visiting the church. When contacted, Kiran Digaonkar, M-east ward officer, said, “A complaint has been received by us regarding water-logging inside the St. Anthony’s cemetery. I have sent Assistant Engineer Mahajan to the site to look into the matter. The problem will be solved very soon.” However, locals on condition of anonymity said that despite their complaints local councilor Bablu Panchal, area MLA Nawab Malik and MP Eknath Gaikwad are not looking into the problem which has been existing for several months.

G

overnor of Maharashtra K. Sankaranarayanan on Mondya launched the state-level celebrations of Merchant Navy Week at the Raj Bhavan. Director General of Shipping Gautam Chatterjee pinned the first miniature flag of the Merchant Navy on the apparel of the Governor on this occasion. Speaking on the occasion, Chairman and Managing Director of the Shipping Corporation of India Arun Kumar Gupta informed the Governor that while 90 per cent of the cargo and freight transport of the country is handled by shipping, the maritime sector touches the lives of every citizen of the country. However, a majority of the people are not aware of the work of seafarers and the maritime sector. He said that creating awareness about the maritime industry is the main objective of organising the Merchant Navy Week. Gupta said that 92 per cent of India’s import and export trade is carried by foreign vessels and that therefore a

lot needs to be done to promote India’s maritime sector and to make India a strong maritime nation. Joint Director General of Shipping Deepak Shetty told the Governor that during the last couple of years, the incidence of piracy in the Gulf of Aden and on the coast of Somalia has receded considerably. General Secretary of the National Union of Seafarers of India Abdul Gani Serang told the Governor that next only to mining, seafaring is the most hazardous profession. He said, even though India provides seven per cent seafarers to the world, seafarers from the Phillippines, Bangladesh and East European nations have been offering competition to Indian seafarers. He felt that Indian seamen should be given tax benefits so as to retain them on national carriers and to prevent them from joining foreign fleets. He further informed that passenger ships are offering a lot of employment opportunities and that the same could be availed by Indians.

was brutalised on August 22.Immediately after the court pronounced the verdict in the telephone operator's case, the prosecution had pressed for section 376(e) in the photojournalist rape case and the court had framed that charge for punishment for repeated offence of rape under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Following this, the accused had moved the Bombay High Court. While hearing the matter on Wednesday, the court completed recording the deposition of three witnesses who were recalled on Tuesday. It will start hearing the final arguments on Thursday after which the verdict may come out, informed Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam. He further added, “The court heard incamera one of the accused who said that he wanted to say something. The three men have already been sentenced to life imprisonment in the telephone operator's gang rape case. This qualifies them for punishment under the amended section in the photojournalist gang rape case.” philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

The cost was Rs.3.80 crore for 2011, Rs.2.50 crore for 2012, Rs.3.75 crore for 2013 and Rs.3.74 crore for 2014. Khare has complained to the PWD department against the engineers under whom the work was undertaken. Khare said, “It is shocking to see that the cars that don’t event totally cost over Rs.1.50 crore have incurred a cost of around Rs.14 crore in the last four years. It is a clear case of

corruption and the people involved like the executive engineer - presidency division, Kishore Patil, his deputy and branch engineers need to be punished for gulping down public money”. Meanwhile, PWD Secretary Shyamalkumar Mukherjee has initiated action in the scam. “We have set up an inquiry. I have asked for a report of expenses from the mechanical and the accounts department. The actions will be taken after going through this report.” RTI activist Raju Khare had forwarded his complaint to Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and other senior officials of concerned departments on March 26.

AAP ABSOLUTELY BROKE Continued from pg 1 « (AAP) candidates are struggling to raise funds, thanks to which campaigning has been badly affected. The AAP has fielded candidates in all 48 Lok Sabha constituencies of the state. Barring a few, most candidates are facing shortage of funds and volunteers needed for campaigning, which it initiated well in advance of other parties. After the initial enthusiasm, candidates failed to increase the volunteer base. Social activist and AAP candidate from North East Mumbai, Medha Patkar, has also hit a roadblock due to paucity of funds. When contacted, Patkar said, “We haven't received any funds so far from the party. Till now, we are running the campaign from the funds raised by the workers. There are some dedicated workers and with their help somehow we are managing.” Subhash Ware, AAP candidate from Pune constituency, is concentrating on door-to-door campaigning, and is getting huge response

in the slums. He too is managing from his personal funds. Mobilising people in the constituency is becoming a big challenge for want of funds. The Election Commission has increased the maximum limit of election expenses from Rs.40 lakh to Rs.70 lakh for a Lok Sabha constituency per candidate. But looking at the situation, it is doubtful whether AAP candidates will be able to spend that kind of money. Preeti Sharma Menon, secretary of the state unit of the AAP admitted that difficulties are being faced by the candidates. She said, “We don't have enough funds and also did not assure funds to any candidate. Most of the candidates who stood were told that they would have to raise the funds in their own constituencies along with local volunteers, and all of them agreed to it. We felt that approximately Rs.200 crore could be collected but we could muster only around Rs 20 crore, which is a very small amount.”

he Alexandra Girls' English Institution in South Mumbai has chosen a unique way to celebrate its Sesquicentennial Anniversary. On the auspicious occasion of Gudi Padwa (March 31), they buried a time capsule at the foot of the arches which are all that remain of their original building in an attempt to tie the past, present and future together. Principal Freny Mehta, who will complete 20 years in her position as head of the institution, took us around the school which is still decorated in bright colors from that day. “There is no one to register time capsules in India so we went to the International Time Capsule Society of the Oglethorpe University in Atlanta”, she said. The small, neat plot is already covered in cement, itself covered in water to set it. One foot under the ground, the time capsule sits, less a capsule, more a steel trunk measuring 2ft x 2.5ft. It will be opened only in 2062 when the school completes 200 years! “Right at the bottom of the hole, we put huge stones and then we poured concrete into it so that no moisture will seep through the ground. Then we made a big wall of bricks around the pit. A particular white sand was poured at the base and on the top so that the box could be removed easily”, Mehta explained. It is easy to remove the box because of the sand and the pit can be reused. Another time capsule can be

As per provisions of The Maharashtra Legislature Members (Removal of Disqualification) Act, 1956, any candidate or member of legislature if he or she holds an office, it is declared by the act as office of profit. However, state BJP president Devendra Fadnavis while speaking to ADC yesterday clarified that Dr Heena Gavit was not a state government servant and that she

Speaking to ADC, sources in the Election Commission of India disclosed that the final decision of upholding the validity of the nomination paper filed by the candidate depends upon the quasi-judicial authority of the Returning Officer. As per the electoral laws any government servant wanting to contest any election has to resign from his/her government service before filing his/her nomination papers. Sources disclosed that Dr Heena Gavit is currently on leave. However, the law also provides for exemptions to the law which spells out persons

holding posts like honorary medical officer or honorary assistant medical officer. However, the provision does not apply to government aided educational institutions. The last date for filing of nomination papers for Nandurbar (ST) Lok Sabha constituency which goes to polls on April 24, in the third phase is April 5. It may be recalled much drama was witnessed over the candidature of Dr Heena Gavit. Her father, former NCP minister for Medical Education Dr Vijaykumar Gavit was shunted out of the state cabinet at the insistence of NCP's deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar. The BJP too had withheld the announcement of its candidate for Nandurbar until Dr Heena Gavit formally joined the party.

The reason why the chairman of the board, Sonia Gandhi, has in recent days become more visible on the campaign trail is because there is real panic now among the shareholders. And, even among those who are not obvious shareholders. She has been not just a good chairman and managing director of Congress Pvt. Ltd. but has shown real skills at controlling the BJP. She had excellent relations with Atal Behari Vajpayee and his family when he was prime minister and has continued to have excellent relations with Lal Krishan Advani and Sushma Swaraj. As a result the BJP has in the past decade failed miserably in its role as the principal opposition party in the Lok Sabha. This is one reason why it was so easy just before the last general election for the Prime Minister to release funds in bank accounts in London that

Rahul Gandhi cannot win elections

ON THE SPOT Tavleen Singh belonged to Sonia Gandhi’s ex-best friend, Ottavio Quattrocchi. They had been blocked for several years by the Indian government on the suspicion that the money in them belonged to the people of India. What Sonia Gandhi is most afraid of is that a government led by Modi could start reopening old cases and re-examining what really happened in the Bofors deal. Where did the bribe money really go? And, why did some of it end up in the bank accounts of a fertilizer salesman and his wife, Maria, who had nothing to do with the armaments business? If these questions had been seriously asked under the Vajpayee government the truth about the Bofors bribes would have been revealed long ago. If questions start to be asked under a Modi government it could make life very difficult for her

and her children. So she is campaigning furiously across the country and her slipper carriers and sycophants are busy denouncing the polls as ‘rubbish’ every chance they get. Senior ministers these days take time off from campaigning to declare that Narendra Modi ‘will never be prime minister’ and that he has ‘serious character flaws’. Recent polls have made them speak even more aggressively because they all seem to indicate that the average Indian voter wants Modi to become prime minister. And, nearly all agree that the NDA this time will get beyond 230 seats and that Congress will be lucky if it gets more than 100.

Modi seems to be people’s favourite If Indian polls can be charged with being ‘fixed’ it is harder to make the same charges against foreign polls so last week’s revelations by the Pew Research Survey has sent deep shock waves through Congress ranks. This Washington based company says that 78 per cent of Indians want Modi as prime minister compared with only 50 per cent who want Rahul. Even Anna Hazare at 69 per cent and the prime minister at 52 per cent did better than the heir to the Dynasty. This poll found that 70 per cent of Indians were dissatisfied with the direction that India had taken in the past decade. Sonia Gandhi had even lower approval ratings than her son. So is it the end of the road for the Dynasty? Is this the last election in which the NehruGandhi family will be a major factor? Emboldened by my recent success in the predictions business I am going to answer both questions. I think it is. Of course there may come a time when someone with the name Gandhi-Vadra emerges on the political landscape and of course it is possible that Rahul Gandhi will produce an heir who in a couple of decades will try and reclaim the country that the Dynasty has come to think of as its inheritance but that is too far in the future to merit even mild speculation. So for the moment I think it is safe to predict that one of the most significant aspects of this Lok Sabha election is that it brings with it the end of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty. It is a historic moment because it is hard to think of a political dynasty in any other democratic country that has exercised so much power for so long.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, APRIL 3, 2014

Today, April 3, 2014, is the birth centenary of late Field Marshal SHFJ Manekshaw. ADC remembers Sam Bahadur, as he was popularly known, the indefatigable Field Marshal and his tryst with death

A gritty fighter till the end

F

ield Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw remains one of the most enigmatic personas of our times. Popularly known as Sam Bahadur, a name purportedly uttered by a Gorkha soldier after failing to recall his tongue-twister Parsi name, literally means — Sam, the fearless; and remains his most easily remembered name till date. Sam cheated death on a few occasions, both in a battlefield and away from it. He, however, lived on to be nonagenarian. Sam wanted to be a doctor much like his military-doctor father but ended being a field marshal. As a young captain, while posted in Burma and fighting a war with the Japanese in 1942, he was critically wounded with as many as nine bullets lodged in his body. While battling for life, his valiant Sepoy Sher Singh came to his rescue and saved him from certain death. The valiant Sikh soldiers of his platoon proclaimed: “Captain Manekshaw is the crown of our head and has to be rescued at any cost”. Sam's orderly, Sher Singh, carried him on his back a good distance to the medical aid post where the army doctors were forced to treat him on priority. Sam Manekshaw was decorated with a Military Cross (MC) for his exemplary courage during this period as it was feared he might die. MC, it may be known, was not awarded posthumously until 1979. Sam not only survived the ordeal but lived on to be 94. Sam would eventually leave all his admirers on June 27, 2008, peacefully in his sleep in his Conoor home — Stavka — in the Nilgiris hills, surrounded by fam-

ily members and well-wishers. Towards the later years of his life, Sam Manekshaw, who otherwise enjoyed robust health despite his grave injuries early in life, needed medical help to overcome some respiratory problems that began surfacing. That was when an army doctor, Colonel BNBM Prasad, a pulmonary specialist was assigned to attend to the field marshal. The two would eventually share a bond beyond the usual doctor-patient relationship that lasted till the end, and curiously enough even beyond his death. Gen Prasad offers rare insight of the gritty Sam, the fearless, even moments before passing away: Sam Manekshaw would often relate many tales from his life to his doctor as they spent considerable time together during recuperation. He often spoke fondly of his darling wife Silloo, who preceded him on February 13, 2001, after a brief illness. He would also speak of his dot-

FM SHFJ Maneckshaw with his platoon of Gorkha soldiers.

ing daughters Sherry and Maja, son-in-laws Dinky Batliwala and Dhun Daruwalla, and grandchildren who also called him 'Sam'. Above all, the field marshal's favourite talk would invariably revolve around his dear Gorkha soldiers who were more than just a family to him. Dr. Prasad easily reminisces 1971, the year when he was a student at Mysore Medical College as a period charged with patriotic fervour. India had defeated Pakistan decisively and a new country Bangladesh was created. Gen SHFJ Manekshaw, then Army Chief, was the toast of the nation. "What impressed me the most on my first personal meeting with him was his magnetic charm. He was a star attraction as he slowly walked in the corridors of the hospital. People in the vicinity used to look at him with bated breath and admire silently despite his age and ill health," recalls Gen Prasad.

Sam with Colonel BNBM Prasad.

A year later while staying in a Mumbai hotel, the field marshal developed acute chest infection due to exposure to chill from the air conditioner. He was air dashed to Delhi and was brought to Army Hospital (R&R). "When I examined him on his arrival, I found him quite sick and weak, barely able to walk.” Despite his illness he politely declined to sit on a wheel chair and walked all the way to the radiology department for a x-ray. He was found to be suffering from a severe chest infection and required immediate hospitalization. "As he was not inclined for an immediate hospitalization, I took the risk of treating him at his younger daughter’s residence in Delhi after convincing hospital authorities to permit domiciliary care," recalls Gen Prasad. To his doctor, Sam would recount his father Dr. Hormusji Manekshaw's concern for his health and of the letter his father wrote asking him to give up smoking and drinking with a stern warning “Son, if you drink and smoke any more you will be dead soon.” Sam joked: “Doctor, had I listened to my father and stopped drinking and smoking as I did initially, I would have died long time back.” Both advancing age and weak lungs by now began to progressively decline his health. He wished to spend last part of his life in his favorite house, Stavka, in Connoor. He was relatively at ease in his own surroundings amidst Gorkha orderlies, pets, garden and local people.

Final days with his doctor "The last time I saw him was on an emergency visit from Delhi at Military Hospital Wellington, Nilgiris, following deterioration of his condition on June 22, 2008." This time I found a pale self of the ageing field marshal. He was gasping for breath and was bedridden and was barely able to open his eye lids. "My long experience of dealing such cases, who have chronic lung disease complicated by a deadly broncho-pneumonia which the frail and 94-year-old field marshal was suffering from,

made me sound alarm bells and alert all concerned expecting an inevitable in next few hours," recalls Gen Prasad. Given his condition, Dr. Prasad feared that their most illustrious patient would not possibly survive the next 24 hours. Killer pneumonia was getting the better of the gritty warrior. Grandson Jehan and son-in-law Dhun Daruwala had lost hopes and were praying at his bedside for a miracle. His daughters, Sherry and Maja were on their way from Chennai and Delhi. When his daughters came, he recognized them and spoke to them for the last time. Moments before the end, those present around him would witness an amazing happening. Sam’s younger daughter, Maja, while trying to control her emotions, spoke about the life and times of her illustrious father to her near comatose father, acknowledging her love for him. The moment she mentioned the name of her mother Silloo, he responded despite his state. The monitor which showed his oxygen saturation precipitously low and falling, suddenly shot up briefly while his breathing and pulse remained stable. He passed away during wee hours peacefully on June 27, 2008, while his daughters held his hand and prayed. He perhaps had the premonition of his death. He told an attending doctor few days before his death pointing at a skin rash on his forearm that he will be dead once the rash disappears. Sure enough the rash disappeared, and so did the legend. Despite debilitating illness, the field marshal had once asked: “Doctor, why can’t you have a scotch in my name? My sincere apologies that I just can’t give you company for the reasons better known to you.” A week after he passed away, Col Prasad would have a surprise visitor. The field marshal's grandson dropped by his office in Delhi to deliver a small gift -- a bottle of scotch under instructions from his grandfather with the following note: "Col Prasad, FM sent his apologies that he could not drink this with you..." Based on conversations with Colonel BNBM Prasad.

Sam listens to his dear Gorkha soldiers who were more than just a family to him.

>> Being there for your guy without being too clingy is one way you can become the perfect girlfriend

We understand that you don't need to become best friends with each of his family members just because you’re in a relationship, but it is important to make an effort. You take pride in acquainting yourself with his family and always remember important dates such as birthdays and anniversaries. You are up to date on important doctor's appointments, graduation parties and significant events, even though you may not talk to his parents or siblings everyday. Also, you understand that although you may not particularly appreciate a lot of the remarks that your partner's father or sister makes, it is better to let it slide than to pick a fight. You know that your boyfriend's family means the world to him and never stop him from spending time with them — just like you do with yours. Above all, you know how to strike a balance between staying involved and being overbearing.

not a nagger While you really want your boyfriend to pull up his socks and help you clean up after dinner instead of watching a movie he's already seen twice, or help out with the laundry instead of playing a game on his phone, you know better than to nag. You understand that nagging is just going to make him resent you and he will become even more reluctant to help out. Instead, you know how to get through to your boyfriend without coming across as irritating and have a mature way of handling situations. You would much rather have an honest chat with him about things and work out a system that suits you both, instead of whining and slamming doors. >> Giving him his privacy shows that you trust him

you value privacy You may be head over heels in love and want to do everything with your boyfriend by your side, but you understand where to draw the line. You wouldn't like it if you found him rummaging through your purse or rifling through your email and you understand the importance of extending him the same courtesy. You are secure about your relationship and don't need to know who is calling him every time his phone rings. You give him his space and privacy and know where your boundaries should lie. Trust issues can make or break any relationship. No matter how much you love to be around each other, if your feelings translate into paranoia every time he meets a girl, or you can't let him have a night to himself because you're worried he will stray and keep calling

ruling the ramp

Neeta Lulla is a name synonymous with Indian fashion. Shirley Mistry talks to her about her spring/ summer collection, tells us what a day in her life is like and gives us her take on this season’s fashion trends.

>> We loved the colours, cuts and minimal embellishment in Neeta Lulla’s spring/ summer collection at LFW 2014

O

ver the years, Neeta Lulla has become a name to reckon with as far as the fashion industry is concerned. While other designers made their foray into the business, had their two minutes of fame and often faded into oblivion, Neeta Lulla is a designer who’s work has been much appreciated, collection after collection, for the past two decades. A favourite with several Bollywood celebrities and the recipient of four national awards for her work as a costume designer, Neeta Lulla talks to us about her recent collection, her fashion sensibilities and much more.

Tell us about your Indo-western diffusion line that was showcased at Lakmé Fashion Week. Is it aimed at the younger fashionista of today? It is, in fact, aimed at the young fashionista of today, whose style evolves with every new trend. In my eyes, she is someone who also requires simplicity, comfort, flexibility and utility. My collection employs uncomplicated/ simple cuts to create easy silhouettes, including paired separates that create unique outfits and endless combinations. The plainness of the collection belies the sensual undertone upon which it has been built. What’s your take on the reinvention of traditional silhouettes and the burst of fresh cuts and designs that have taken centre stage when it comes to Indian wear? Wearability is important for most people when it comes to Indian wear, as are the elements from our roots. It’s this core of modern silhouettes which appeals to the Indian consumer’s needs of daily dressing, as it is both easy and practical. >> Read on to find out what a day in Neeta Lulla’s life is like

The time leading up to a fashion show is hectic, to say the least. Tell us what your typical month is like when a big show is looming large. My days are usually endless, pondering over new designs, putting together a look, garment production and working

against time on embroideries. Then I have to work on the guest list, put together the music and the list goes on! What is fashion going to be like in spring/ summer 2014? I see a lot of bright, tropical colours, easy silhouettes and comfort-wear this season, with trends that are inspired by global awareness. What is a gross fashion error you see too many women make today? Women don’t realise that brands don’t make you a fashionista. What is a must-have closet staple for the months to come? Well-cut jeans, a well-tailored white shirt, an elegant basic outfit in neutral colours along with a smart bag and a few interesting accessories will serve you well. Who are some of the upcoming Indian designers whose work has caught your eye? A lot of the young designers today work with diverse sensibilities that are very appealing. I applaud each one and wish them a great future. Do you remember the very first outfit you designed? How did your journey as a designer start? My first outfit was a film costume for Kimi Katkar, which was disastrous and needed to be reworked overnight. That is how my journey started. You’re designing fabulous clothes, decorating homes and are even at the helm of a Whistling Woods - Neeta Lulla School of Fashion. How do you juggle it all and what’s next? As they say, ‘the show must go on’, so I will always work towards creating and doing something new. The journey is what keeps me going.

« 5 ways to rock: crop tops + pencil skirts 1. edgy If you want to look more quirky than razor sharp in your crop top and pencil skirt combo, pick a skirt that has a graphic print on it. Geometric prints work as well. Pair it with a strappy crop top with cutouts for an edgier look.

A

s a working woman, you will be spending most of your time travelling to and from work in the heat. If you leave your hair lose, it will end up sticking to your neck and a fringe will cause beads of sweat to ruin your makeup on the way to a big meeting. But, tying it into a casual bun may not work so well in a professional setting. So, we spoke to Shailesh Moolya, national hair trainer at Lakmé Salons, who gave us five hairstyles you can wear to work, that will keep your hair off your face and neck and look super chic at the same time.

Make 4 vertical sections of your hair, pull them back and tie each section into a ponytail. l Start twisting the ponytail from the bottom till it coils and becomes like a twisted rope. With the help of a bobby pin, secure it at the desired place. l Follow the same steps with the other ponytails to form a horizontal row of twisties at the back. You can play around with how high or low you place your twisties to create a different look. l

Part your hair completely down the center and pick a side for the chignon to rest on. Pull all your hair to that side and create two ponytails, one in each hand. l Tie your smoothed-down hair into a loose knot. Wrap one side around to the right and stick a hair pin in to hold. l Repeat on the left side and hold it down with a pin. l Finish it off with a medium-hold hairspray.

4.roCk-ChiC Jazz up your look by picking either a leather skirt or crop top. If you want to skip the leather, opt for pieces in dark neutrals and add a studded jacket to the ensemble. Pair it with ankle length boots and an oversized envelope clutch to finish off.

>> Kylie Jenner pulls off the crop top and pencil skirt combo perfectly

l

FrenCh knot l Take a horse-shoe shaped section at the crown and divide it into two vertical sections. l Tie a simple knot using both sections. l Hold the knot and push the two other sections below the existing section. l Add it to the hair left out of the knot and tie another knot with the newly merged hair. l Keep repeating this till you reach the nape of your neck and secure it with bobby pins.

3. CoLour Crush The Colour Crush range from Lakmé has several gorgeous colours, of which this blue one is our absolute favourite. It's not too insipid and is different from the mints and baby blues we've been surrounded by the entire year. Price `150

3. dress it down You can also pair a basic pencil skirt in jersey fabric with a vest style crop top and a slouchy bag for an everyday look. It is decidedly casual but super stylish.

sLeek high PonytaiL Straighten your hair till it is poker straight. l Brush it back to keep it smooth and decide how high you want your pony tail to be. l Tie the pony tail back with elastic, ensuring that your hair remains smooth. l Take a small piece of hair from the underside of the ponytail and wind it around the base of the ponytail to cover the elastic. Pin it into place with the help of a bobby pin.

2. Pink FLamenCo This hot pink nail polish from OPI is a gorgeous shade that will add a touch of colour to your outfit. The deep pink is a good shade for a working professional since it's not too garish. Price `670

2. vintage ChiC Pick a crop top and pencil skirt set with a pastel, floral or vintage print. You could also opt for one with daisies on it as they are a big trend this summer. Pair it with summer sandals and a sling bag for a feminine, flirty look.

The Face Wash is perfect to refresh you after a long, tiring work day. After using it, my face felt cleaner, smoother and softer. The face wash also gives you a tinge of glow. However, the only issue I had with the face wash was that the glow didn’t last for long. But, glowing skin apart, the face wash clears your skin of oil and grime really well and while they haven’t mentioned anything about it, also works to keep acne in check. The face wash also has a pleasant smell, which gives it more points for its refreshing feel. Overall, Organic Harvest’s face wash cleans up your face pretty well and leaves your skin feeling refreshed. PriCe `395 where Retail outlets star rating ****

For the CasuaL oFFiCe If your work environment is causal and accepting of your individual style, try sporting retro waves. They are simple to do and look stunning. l Apply volumnising spray throughout your hair to add texture and part your hair to the left. l Start on the left side of the part and take three sections of hair, beginning at the front of your hairline. l With the section closest to the hairline, cross over the middle section of hair and begin to French braid around your hairline. As you add hair to the braid from the outside sections, roll the braid counter-clockwise as you make your braid. l Continue braiding till you reach the nape of your neck and secure it together with an elastic. l Repeat on the opposite side. l Overlap the lengths of both braids at the back of your head and tuck them in at the nape of your neck. To conceal and hold the lengths of hair, secure the up-do with pins. l Finish it off with lots of hairspray to hold everything in place.

This poor girl looks like she's wearing some bride's punishment bridesmaid dress. The floral motif is gaudy and looks like someone threw up Candy Crush on her blouse. The skirt material looks cheap and the shine is just so out of style. There's too much going on and unfortunately, none of it is good.

We like both the elements but together they don't seem to work. The jacket, while unique, would have suited a fitted black skirt so much better. And yes, her slate grey skirt is flowy and lovely but hides her va-va voom figure when paired with the jacket. Hair and makeup gets a thumbs up from us as usual.

«

riCha Chadda

Richa plays it safe in a dull gold shift dress. We like the work on the dress but overall, while classy, the outfit is a little too plain. A statement cuff would have added a dash of oomph to her ensemble. Also, those shoes look a size small for her and make her toes poke out — not a good look, love! PS: your phone is not a clutch.

«

sushmita sen

Yes, we know the crop top and fitted skirt trend is big right now, but Sush seems to have got it all wrong. The look is supposed to be demure with a flash of skin but Sush's top just makes the outfit tacky. She loses points with her hair and over-the-top makeup which is more drag queen than beauty queen. Come on Sush, you're a natural stunner, you don't need the cake-up!

«

krishika LuLLa

It looks like it's been a bad week for the ladies! The dress is a pretty colour but might be a ill-fitting for Krishika. But, the dress is actually not the problem here. Her look lacks appeal because of those chunky gold shoes. They kill the delicate feel of the dress. The elaborate bouffant hairstyle further incriminates this outfit.

Summer Ready

It can be quite a challenge to face the summer sun and still stay cool at work. Radhika gives you tips on how to beat the heat as a working woman

S

ummer doesn’t have to mean endless sweating or tricky hair and skin problems. It can also mean weekends on the beach, diving into a pool or spending your evenings sipping on cooling cocktails. But, if you have to work through the summer, it can be difficult to get through the day. With long travel to work and being stuck in traffic jams, summer can leave you feeling hot and flustered. Well, not anymore. We told you how to keep your hair in a work-friendly summer style (page 16-17), and now, read on to find out what to carry with you and what to wear to work so you can have a comfortable working summer.

What to Wear l It is very important to be comfortable in your clothes during summer. The coolest material is cotton. It helps with the circulation of air and absorbs body moisture. l Try and wear bright colours, including white. They reflect the heat of the sun while dark coloured clothes are known to be good absorbents of heat. l Simple clothing such as slip dresses, shirt dresses, white shirts, kneelength shorts, skirts and palazzo trousers are good options.

saving your skin l Always keep a bottle of water with you. Although this is the most clichéd advice we could give you, it will help you in the long run. Drinking water keeps you hydrated and makes up for all the fluids lost through sweat. l Make sure your tiffin includes a diet with high water content. Fruits such as watermelon, grapes, oranges and pineapples, and vegetables such as broccoli, spinach and cabbage have the highest water content. Salads should form the most significant part of your tiffin. l Never step out without sunscreen, sunglasses and a scarf covering your hair. It’s a win-win situation. You can still look glamorous while saving your skin and hair. l Using hairspray before you go outdoors also helps. It keeps your hair hydrated as well as safe from the summer sun.

picking accessories l We often tend to forget to protect our feet from the sun. The best way to make it in time for that train or bus is in strappy flats, but they are not exactly work-appropriate. Ankle length strappy flats are stylish and also look professional. l High-heel lovers don’t be disappointed. Summer doesn’t mean you stop loving your heels. Opt for wedges or strappy heels instead. Just let your feet breathe. l Keep the weight on your shoulders very light. Divide the weight if you can. Try carrying a sling bag and a separate tiffin bag so as to make a style statement and still divide the weight. l Small totes are a good idea if you carry a laptop bag.

Airing it out I

f you think that your house is stuffy and always hotter than the climate outside, it's possible that your home is not well ventilated. Proper ventilation will not only bring you respite when it’s hot, it will also ensure better quality of air in your home. Breathing in stale air is really bad for health, so if your house is not properly ventilated, you’re going to have to worry about more than just the summer heat. We help you out with some tips that will improve the ventilation and overall quality of air in your home.

The firsT sTep The first step you should take to improving the ventilation is, unsurprisingly open all the windows and doors in your home. Remember that we’ve used the word ‘and’ and not ‘or’. Opening only one window or door won’t result in better air-flow. The air needs an inlet as well as an outlet — and the best way to ensure this is to open windows and doors that are on opposite sides of the room for a few hours every day. This will result in a constant breeze wafting through the room.

If your home doesn’t have proper ventilation, you’re going to have to deal with a stuffy room that will make the hot summer months even more unbearable. Dev Goswami tells you how to keep your surroundings cool

overpower the breeze coming in through windows or doors. This will defeat the purpose of keeping them open in the first place. So, before you turn on your fan, open the windows and doors and see if it is bearable. If you still feel hot, then you can consider turning on the fans. At the same time, when you feel that there is no breeze coming in from the outside, you can use ceiling as well as table fans to improve air circulation within a room.

keep planTs To improve qualiTy One of the best ways to ensure the quality of the air in your home is to have house plants near your windows. Various studies done over the years have shown that plants not only help release oxygen into the atmosphere, but also filter the indoor air, helping to improve overall air quality. My boyfriend’s dad travels a lot for work. This means that his mum is often alone at home. I think she is great but I know she gives him guilt when we’re out together and she is alone at home... I know he feels bad about it. So, the other day... Hey... you know what Gyan, sometimes we could take your mum out for... dinner or a movie, now and then? Man! Yes! What a good idea. You wouldn’t mind? Man... this is why I love you! Haha! Silly! Why would I mind?

Then, on our very next date... without telling me first, Gyan picks me up and he had brought his mother along. Gyan! Aunty! I didn’t know you were coming! Yay!

I was a little irritated that he had just sprung it on me...

A

He supports you

He respects you

He is not afraid to sHow His love

He should respect your feelings and your opinions. Little gestures, such as asking for your point of view, will help make your relationship last. Respect will make you feel loved and appreciated. His respect should extend to your family and friends as well.

Too much PDA is a bad idea and you should run the opposite direction if he wants to be your Siamese twin; but little gestures of love can brighten your day. If he openly displays his love for you, you must be pretty important to him.

fter reading our story on page 13-14, you know by now whether you’re the perfect girlfriend, or if you need to shape up. But, does your man deserve it? Whoever said women are complicated was never in a long-term relationship with a man. Some men can sweep you off your feet, while others make you wonder if they are worth your time. Not every man can be relationship material, but once he has won you over, these hints will help you figure out if he is a keeper.

He loves your quirks We all have our own quirks. From mood swings and cravings to days when all you want to do is cuddle up in bed; your relationship challenge really begins the day you are ready to reveal that side to him. If he loves you with all of your quirks, then you are one lucky girl — because he’s a keeper!

He plans aHead Don’t start worrying if he is not planning your wedding yet, but look for baby steps such as travelling together in a few months or next year. If he plans ahead, that means he is serious, committed and wants to spend more time with you.

Support and encouragement goes a long way. It is very important to be a pillar of strength for each other when you’re in a relationship. Whether you want to start on a project that will take up all your time, or need to take a sabbatical that will last for a couple of months, if he encourages your wants and needs, hold on tight.

He Has interests It’s nice to be with someone who is passionate about something. It can be a sport, film or a fun activity. The fact that he has interests means you will have things to talk about and share. It will definitely keep the spark alive!

He is responsible Yes, his boyish charm will melt your heart initially, but imagine actually dating a child. Maturity and responsibility make a man more interesting. He should be fun, but also care about his career and not rebel against growing up. And even if you can take care of yourself, it’s nice to have someone pamper you once in a while.

« Dear grace, i have a problem...

dear Grace,

I recently got into a fight with my best friend and decided not to speak to her anymore. My boyfriend is also friends with her (we were all in college together) and he seems to be taking her side! Not only does he still talk to her, he has started to constantly advise me to be the ‘bigger person’ and patch up, telling me how upset she has been since our

fight. Why isn’t he supporting my decision to cut her out of my life?! — rebecca bhatt, Goregaon (w) dear rebecca, Since you were all friends, you have to realise that the two of you fighting doesn’t have to extend to him just because he is your boyfriend. Maybe he is trying to do a good thing by bringing you back together. To be

honest, unless she’s done something that you could never forgive, most issues can be sorted out, so there’s no harm being the bigger person. Talk to your boyfriend and tell him that you feel like he needs to support you more, but also think about talking to your friend. Life is too short to hold a grudge. "I feel like a complete meanie, but I don’t think dating his mum is my scene! She made it all about her! But, Gyan thinks I loved it because I suggested it! How do I tell him it sucked?” — Ms. Miffed a) Don’t ruin a nice thing by over-thinking it. Instead, don’t think of the time that the three of you are out together as a date. Think of it as ‘her’ time, which is what it is actually. Make a fuss of her! b) Hahahaha! You have won SO many brownie points and you just don’t know! Make sure Gyan lets his mum know it was YOUR idea. And make sure you have dates for just the two of you too. c) Make him take her out along sometimes. She’d like it better. LAST WEEK: M should pick Option B: Underneath all these annoying selfproclamations of ‘Having it all’, your friend sounds like she is actually a little scared of the changes coming. Restraint in sex

I am 22 and my fiancé is 27. We are planning to get married sometime next year. Recently, he suggested that we live together until then, but we should refrain from any genital sex. He says that we could engage only in petting and caressing. I am a bit suspicious and concerned about this restraint by him. What I know of men and male sexuality is that men find it very difficult to exercise restraint in sex. Kindly explain. IF you love each other, if you are sexually attracted to each other, if you have the freedom and privacy to get physically intimate, then it may be very difficult to refrain from going ahead with intercourse. Physical intimacy may sexually arouse both of you to such an extent that it may become tormenting to avoid intercourse. I wonder what is stopping you from getting married earlier! When we were at 60/USD, people said 75-80/USD and now we are back at 60/USD, they are saying 55-50/USD and I heard some 45/USD also. There are levels at which you believe that this is a recipe for increased volatility in the future and we would try and avoid reaching those levels. I think that a certain amount of leeway this way that way is fine; we are not overly worried about that.

Nifty At New High, But ...

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Thursday (April 3, 2014) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose marginally on Wednesday (April 02, 2014) a net 31.50 points (0.47%) and closed at the 6752 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 6757 points level on positive global cues. It then rose further and registered the day’s high at the 6763 points level at 9.16 a.m. It then declined and registered the day’s low at the 6723 points level at 1.32 p.m. The index then rose sharply and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained above its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 40 points and closed above the psychologically important 6750 points level. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 32 were gainers, while 18 were losers. All the sectoral indices barring FMCG and metal closed in the green. Substantial buying was seen in realty, healthcare, oil & gas, PSU and capital goods stocks.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 17.86%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 1094 were gainers, 433 were losers and 39 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator is in the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is above the slow D line (positive if it continues). RSI Indicator: The RSI rose and crossed above the 80 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).

MACD Indica tor: The MACD is above zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line and both lines are diverging (positive if it continues). The ADX is rising while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is increasing in strength.

a strong market but with a neutral bias.

Suppor t Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 6446 points level. The next support is at the 6338 points level. Resistance Levels : The immediate main resistance is at the 6753 points level. The next resistance is at the 6809 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 6747 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 6730. Support (2) = 6707. Resistance (1) = 6770. Resistance (2) = 6786. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a third consecutive doji pattern. This indicates that the i ndecisi veness amongst investors continue s. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the index is above its 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the four averages are rising and also positively trended. Further, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a fur ther up move unfoldi ng. Incidentally, the index is approaching a major resistance level at the 6753 points level. (The index tested that level intra-day, yesterday and closed just below it). There is a possibility that it c ould find some res istance there. However, if it crosses above it then a fur ther rise can be expected. Investors are advised to hold long positions.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Is above its 5-day average (at 6703) Positive. Is above its 15-day average (at 6586) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 6506) Positive. Is above its 200-day average (at 6049) Positive. All the four averages are positively trended. Positive.

But improvement will be gradual due to fragile economic recovery, says Crisil

By A Business Reporter

C

orporate India’s credit quality is on course for recovery, albeit gradually, in FY 2014-15 . CRISIL believes the credit ratio – the ratio of rating upgrades to downgrades – may recover from the low levels seen last fiscal as pressure on profitability and demand eases. Nevertheless, the overall credit quality will be far from buoyant in the near term, given the fragile economic growth and limited scope for reduction in interest rates. The credit ratio, at 0.79 times in 2013-14, has remained weak for two years now as downgrades outnumbered upgrades on slowing demand, tight liquidity and high interest rates. However, moderation in downgrade intensity—to 10.1 per cent from 12.1 per cent in 2012-13— has helped the credit ratio recover marginally from 0.62 times in the previous fiscal. These rating actions were witnessed on a very large base of over 13,000 ratings, making them quite representative of the trends in corporate credit quality in India. CRISIL downgraded ratings of

1,165 firms and upgraded those of 921 in the last fiscal. Around 90 per cent of the downgrades was on account of slowing demand, tight liquidity, and stretched working capital cycles. Companies in investmentlinked sectors such as power, construction, engineering and capital goods, and transport had more downgrades than firms in other sectors. More than a third of the upgrades was on account of company-specific factors such as sustained track record of timely debt servicing and strongerthan-expected capital structure. Another third of upgrades was driven by improved business conditions for firms in sectors—such as packaged foods, textiles and agricultural products—that have linkages with exports, agriculture, and non-discretionary consumer segments. Says Ramraj Pai, President - Ratings, CRISIL: “Our analysis indicates that firms with better profitability and low leverage have survived the downturn in economy well.” Firms with a return on capital employed (RoCE) of more than 15 per cent saw 58 per cent more upgrades than downgrades. Similarly, upgrades

outnumbered downgrades by 30 per cent for firms with low leverage — those with a ratio of debt to earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (debt/ EBIDTA) of less than 3 times. CRISIL believes that corporate credit quality will improve as GDP growth touches 6 per cent in 201415 from sub-5 per cent levels seen in the last two fiscals. The credit ratio will, however, remain below 1 time in the near term. Says Pawan Agrawal, Senior Director - Ratings, CRISIL: “Significant improvement in credit ratio is possible only if there is strong and sustainable recovery in investment as well as in consumption demand. The underlying assumptions for any improvement in credit quality are progressive policies and continuity in reforms.” The degree of economic recovery, availability of liquidity, performance of monsoon, continued recovery in export markets, the outcome of the forthcoming general elections, and success in de-leveraging the balance sheets through sale of assets will all be critical for India’s corporates.

Industry Calls For Clean, Corruption-Free Government By A Business Reporter

eading industry bodies have said a clean and a corruption-free government at the Centre could take India on a higher growth trajectory and prosperity. "People are absolutely fed up particularly in the last few years and have started questioning now. A corruption-free government is absolutely important for the betterment of the country," CII president-designate Sumit Mazumdar told PTI. Mazumdar said that whatever happened to the Indian economy in the last few years was 'totally manmade and not linked to any economic cycle'. "The downturn in the economy in the last few years was totally man-made and not linked to the global crisis. This was a result of lack of confidence in the government and business sentiments was adversely affected owing to rampant corruption", Mazumdar, who will hold the reins of the premier industry body next year, said. “One can notice that business sentiments have vastly improved

after the announcement of elections. The Sensex has been rising, foreign investments are coming and the core sector is doing well," he said, adding people were expecting a good government to come after the elections. He said since the last few years, infrastructure development had come to a standstill. The new government should come with a clear-cut plan on how to weed out corruption from the system. Assocham Senior Vice-President Sunil Kanoria also echoed similar views. "Corruption has to be weeded out as it has affected business sentiments adversely," Kanoria said. "This is not a simple process. For this, transparent and right policies should be in place," he added. He also felt that the new government should review some of the laws which was passed by the previous government. "The retrospective clause in the Income Tax Act is detrimental to investment flows," he said. "No law should have retrospective effect and it should be either from now or from future," Kanoria added.

Last year Gudipadwa was in the month of April’13, due to which the March’13 base was low. T

here was a time when television was considered an ‘idiot box’ and only good for saas-bahu serials, long dreary soap operas, boring chat-shows or bland ‘samachaar’ slots. Film stars considered it a taboo to make an appearance on television. But the super-stardom of Shahrukh Khan changed the scenario when, after being noticed in shows like ‘Fauji’, ‘Circus’ etc. he was cast in films like ‘Dil Aashna Hai’ and ‘Deewana’ and the rest they say is history. Recently too TV anchors and hosts like Manish Paul starred in ‘Mickey Virus’ and now in the sequel to ‘Tere Bin Laden’ and Rannvijay Singh, the winner of MTV Roadies, has starred in films like ‘London Dreams’ etc. Ayyush-

My favourite dancer is Hrithik Roshan. I would like to dance like him some day. What is your favourite dance form? My favourite dance form is the break dance.

What about your studies? Now I will attend school regularly and work on the bits that have been affected because of the dance competion.

Do you want to pursue dance in the future? Yes. I want to be an dancer as well as an actor and I will aspire to do both. What do you remember about your big night? I was very nervous that night. But the perfomances by Jackky Bhagnani, Varun Dhawan, Nargis Fakhri, Ileana D’çruz, Anu Malik and Shreyas Talpade awed me and at the same time inspired me to give a great performance myself. The rest of the contestants also entertained the viewers with special performances. Jaaved Jaaferi and host Sargun Mehta also performed that night. Who would you like to thank for your grand win? I would like to thank Javved Jaffri sir, Naaved Ali sir and Ravi Behl sir for giving me this opportunity.

EPIC DRAMA

The Game of Dice is about to begin! The shrewd game that changed the destiny of India and became the premise of one of the world’s greatest epics – The Mahabharata – is about to unfold on STAR Plus. The show that captured the hearts of viewers across the country is all set to showcase the infamous ‘Game of Dice’ between the Pandavas and Kauravas. This occurrence and most talked about turning point in the epic not only provided impetus to Draupadi’s humiliation but ultimately led to the 18-day Kurukshetra war for the throne of Hastinapur.

HERO GETS THEM DANCING

'Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah' has become so famous that all the celebrities are willing to visit here and meet the members of Gokuldhaam society. This time it’s Varun Dhawan’s turn to make a total heroic entry in the society. He not only charmed the ladies but also showed his dancing moves and yes, how could he miss the garba round with Dayaben. “He is a very adorable and a brilliant actor, he played garba with me and we all shook a leg on his film track. We had fun. I have always loved David Dhawan’s movies because they have a real fun factor,” said Disha Vakani.

SCIENTIFIC STUNTS

'Magic of Science' is produced for Discovery Networks International by Objective Productions. It is back for another season of jaw-dropping illusions and mind-blowing tricks. Performed by an international, all-star cast of magicians, Ben Hanlin, Wayne Houchin, Billy Kidd, and newcomer Nate Staniforth, these fascinating stunts are backed by real science and prove that it’s not just what you do, it’s how you do it. A seven-part series, 'Magic of Science' premieres on April 7 at 8 pm on Discovery Channel. One of the most successful shows on Discovery Channel, it is that rare intersection where fact meets fantasy.

TOUGH TRACKS

Railroad is one of the most critical and challenging services in Alaska’s infrastructure. Following an elite crew of workers – brakemen, engineers, construction crews, mechanics and train drivers – Discovery Turbo’s new series 'Railroad Alaska' illustrates the battle against ferocious weather and treacherous terrain.

Respect game and fellow cricketers: Bravo’s message

MIRPUR: Emphasising that cricketers have certain responsibilities towards their fans, especially the youth, West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has advocated playing a sledging-free game. A James Faulkner's poor-in-taste jibe directed towards them pumped up the West Indians and the Caribbean team came out all guns blazing to topple the Australians en route to the semifinals. The victory was an apt answer to Faulkner's retort that he 'does not like West Indians'. A philosophical Bravo, who contributed in West Indies' win over Australia, said cricketers are looked as idol, so they must behave in a proper manner on and off the field. "We are all human beings. We play this game and we should respect each other. We are soon going to finish but cricket is going to go on. It’s important that we leave our legacy as players, not only as West Indian players but as cricketers. We have young kids looking up to us, so I do not see any sense in trying to sledge the opposition," Bravo said in a pragmatic tone referring to Faulkner's comment.

LANKANS EYE REVENGE, WINDIES AIM FOR ENCORE

IRPUR: In their bid to reach their second successive World T20 final, defending champions West Indies will be looking to put up another clinical performance when they take on a gutsy Sri Lanka, who in turn would be hoping to avenge their loss in the last edition's summit clash. One can expect a good encounter as both teams have a lot in common going into the big semi-final clash here today. Both Sri Lanka and West Indies have had identical victories in their final group league encounters in which they had crushed their respective opponents for paltry scores of less than 100 runs. Both the sides boast of world class spinners, who are winning games on a consistent basis. While Rangana Herath would want to repeat his Chittagong heroics with another superlative effort against the Gayles and the Bravos, the Jayawardenes and the San-

gakkaras will be equally wary of the threats that will be posed by Messrs Sunil Narine and Samuel Badree. Sri Lanka have good memories of the Shere-e-Bangla Stadium here as they lifted the Asia Cup at this very ground not even a month ago. As Darren Bravo rightly said, "they have played a lot more games in Bangladesh than West Indies". But West Indies are a solid Twenty20 side which has all its bases covered despite the absence of Kieron Pollard. Their effort has been creditable as Chris Gayle hardly had any role with the bat apart from his half-century against the Australians, which some would say was slow by his standards. But Bravo and skipper Darren Sammy had raised their hands up whenever their team needed them the most. The duo has earned two tremendous wins against quality oppositions with their willow. If Australia match went right down to the wire, the Pakistan team simply

Sammy has led from the front with his unbeaten knocks of 34 and 42 that had changed the course of the match. Narine and Badree with six and 10 wickets, respectively, have justified their top billings of No. 1 and 2 in the ICC's List of T20 bowlers. It will be a test for the Sri Lankan batsmen who haven't done really

well, save the England game, but somehow managed to fly under the radar because of a good spin attack. Mahela Jayawardene, in his last T20 tournament has been his team's top scorer with 134 runs. The Lankan batting depends on their three senior players -Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan -- and all of them need to fire in order to post a good total. Sangakkara, in fact, has had a horrible run so far, scoring just 18 runs from his three innings. It will be a test of character for young Dinesh Chandimal as he prepares to lead the side in his biggest match so far. Chandimal himself has not got a proper opportunity to bat so far and will be itching to perform on a big stage today. While West Indies have an advantage as they have played all their matches at Mirpur, Sri Lanka will feel better that the dew won't be a factor here as it has been at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong.

2012 World T20 final would have no bearing today: SL coach M

Talk about their toned down celebrations after Pakistan match compared to their win against Australia, team’s No 1 all-rounder said, "Australia game was a bit heated for us and I’m sure you know why. That was a very important game for us. We wanted to prove to ourselves and prove a point to the Australians that at the end of the day, we are all cricketers." With a typical Calypso flavour in his answers, Bravo said in a content tone that no team should try to upset them.

IRPUR: Sri Lanka cricket team's English coach Paul Farbrace feels that West Indies' triumph in the last edition of the ICC World T20 will have no bearing when the two teams lock horns in the semi-final of the current edition at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium today. "The simple fact is that it was then 2012 and this is now. The last game will have no bearing whatsoever. Twenty20 is about whoever turns up on that particular day. Form goes out of the window. It's about making sure we're ready and focused. What happened two years ago won't even be talked about, I can assure you," Farbrace said. With Rangana Herath's stunning performance against New Zealand, it will a selection headache as regular captain Dinesh Chandimal will be coming in after serving onematch suspension due to slow overrate during England game. Now Sri Lanka will have to see as to what they do with Ajantha Mendis and Herath, who is in tremendous form. "It's a lovely headache to have. We

the coin goes up tomorrow night."

‘FOR US SEMIFINAL IS JUST ANOTHER GAME OF CRICKET’ It's only possible for a West Indies

captain to say that a World Cup semi-final is "just another game" but then Darren Sammy is completely different from most international cricket skippers. Asked whether their triumph in the 2012 final will have an effect on the semi-final against Sri Lanka, Sammy said in his inimitable deep baritone, “For us it's another game of cricket. Cricket is not about what happens before the game. It's about what happens on a cricket field on that present day," Sammy said. "We defeated them (Sri Lanka) in the World Cup (2012 final) and in the practice game here but they have played some good cricket and we have a lot of respect for them. But at the same time we know what we have to do to win." His sense of humour is as mindblowing as his batting. A journalist reminded him that he had lost his ODI captaincy after winning the 2012 World T20 and the skipper laughed and said, "Probably then if we win this tournament, I won't be Test captain."

ANAND WORKING ON IDEAS FOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP REMATCH WITH CARLSEN

30 C

SPORTS

HENNAI: He has rediscovered his wizardry in the game of 64 squares by winning the Candidates tournament and Viswanathan Anand is now "working on quite a few ideas" to counter the threat of numero uno player Magnus Carlsen in his quest to regain the World Championship title later this year. "My thought are already starting to form. I have got quite a few ideas about what I am going to do. Over the next few months or so I will try to crystallise my thoughts, make some plans. Though April I am taking a break," Anand said. Five-time world champion Anand lost the crown to Carlsen November last, paving the way for a revenge match with the Norwegian. He had earned the right to play Carlsen after he won the 2014 FIDE Candidates Chess tournament after settling for a draw with Sergey Karjakin of Russia in the 13th and penultimate round last Saturday. "I know for sure that I would be playing Carlsen but I am not going to make my plans openly. I do not think I should be discussing about it now," Anand said when asked if he would bring about changes to his game this time around. About the upcoming big match, he added: "Well, the match is very important. It is not what you plan that you get. As I have said I have my ideas and I am not going to discuss about it. Everything is looking positive. So, I will not tell you what my strategies will be."

The 44-year-old from Chennai said such wins (Candidates tournament in Khanty Mansiysk) are very important and helps in changing one's outlook. "In this case I would say the situation has not changed entirely. In fact one good result has changed everything already. You simply needed such a victory at some point of time. With such wins your outlook changes suddenly. I think the emotions are all positive. You need a good result," Anand said. Anand had earlier said that five

best games that he plays would put the rival player in trouble, and when asked if had adopted that against Carlsen in the last world championship match, he responded in the negative. "I did not challenge him at that level. I would have played somewhere here and there. I had tried this method against (Levon) Aronian and succeeded. I think this kind of matches last month was nice. Basically I do not say that I do that in a whole tournament but it is rare that one attempts such

manoeuvre." Asked about the match against Vaselin Topolov and Gary Kasparov's comments after his win, he said, "The match against Toplov was very crucial because I checked the point differences and I had planned my game very perfectly. As for Kasparov, I thought he is trying to be nice." Anand conceded to an extent that he was not at his aggressive best against Carlsen last year. "I think it is partly true when you do a post-game analysis. I am not comfortable with that. I would like to draw my own conclusions about the match and decide how I am going to pan that I would love to get. Generally you have your plans and the opponent has his and what advantages you get in a match is what matters." He said after game nine in the Candidates tournament, he was sure of a win. "I would say that after game three I was pretty convinced that it is going to be a good result for me. After first three games, I thought I had given myself a great start and around that round my confidence grew. But after game nine I knew that it was my tournament to be won. "After that I had a delayed shock after game eleven and there were some pointed questions in the press conference." Further talking about Candidates tournament, he said, "This time I felt that my sails were in right places and the wind was just flowing. Sometimes, you need such extra things."

Warne drops in at SA nets to help Tahir before India game in his hotel room," she said. It was around quarter to 11 in the morning when Warne dropped in at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium and his first question was, "Mate, are the South Africans done with their batting and bowling?" After being told that they were still doing their fielding drills, Warne retired to the VIP lounge of the stadium. Once the net started, he stood behind the stumps watching the spinners with minute attention. He was seen

speaking to Tahir especially but he also watched JP Duminy bowl his off-breaks and left-arm slow bowler Aaron Phangiso roll his arm over.He had a long chat with his old mate and rival Allan Donald, who is the South African bowling coach. There are rumours that Warne might have dropped in to guide Tahir on Donald's insistence. Later, Warne bowled a few deliveries to Quinton de Kock.

Kashyap stuns Zhengming in India Open

By Amit Kumar Das

NEW DELHI: India's Parupalli Kashyap today produced one of his finest performances as he stunned world number seven Chinese Zhengming Wang in a thrilling three-game victory in the USD 250,000 India Super Series badminton tournament here. Kashyap, who played with a strapping on his shoulder after suffering a partial dislocation in German Open, prevailed over Wang 21-12 17-21 21-12 in a men's singles match which lasted an hour at Siri Fort Sports Complex. Malaysia Grand Prix Gold finalist, Sourabh Varma too reached the second round after beating Russia's Vladimir Ivanov 21-16 17-21 21-14. Another Indian, R M V Gurusaidutt also made his way to the next round with a 17-21 21-16 21-17 win over Chinese Taipei's Tien Chen Chou in another men's singles match. In women's singles, Sayali Gokhale and Trupti Murgunde reached the second round after contrasting wins. It was curtains for other Indians including top ranked K Srikanth, H S Prannoy, B Sai Praneeth, Anand Pawar, Shreyansh Jaiswal and two-time national champion Anup Sridhar in men's singles. In women's singles, it was end of road for Saili Rane, Tanvi Lad, Shruti Mundada and PC Thulasi. Kashyap had lost twice to Wang in China and Hong Kong in 2012 and 2013, and the happiness to finally tame the Chinese reflected on his face. "Just so happy to be able to beat him. I lost to him twice before and he is a kind of player who reads me well. He anticipates my strokes. Today I was anticipating his stokes better," Kashyap said after the match. "The good thing is that today my level never dropped. I lost the second game but I did not lose my confidence. He is not among the fittest of Chinese players but he is good with his strokes and movements on court," said Kashyap. "He has often caught me at the net in the last meetings. I thought his speed dropped a bit in the third game. I wanted to maintain my game and I also got some good points on the net." The world number 24 Indian had reached the semifinals of the Swiss Open and said the confidence had helped him. "I think the confidence that I got after reaching Swiss Open quarters was the key. I just wanted some good wins under my belt after the shoulder injury. The shoulder did not bother today," he said. Thailand Grand Prix Gold winner, K Srikanth suffered a 18-21 18-21 loss to Takuma Ueda of Japan, Praneeth lost to seventh seed Chinese Pengyu DU 21-16 10-21 19-21, Pawar's gallant fight ended with a 10-21 21-19 6-21 loss to fourth seed Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark. While 2013 All England champion and second seed Chen Long of China ended Prannoy's journey with a 21-15 21-9 win, Shreyansh Jaiswal lost to Brice Leverdez of France 15-21 24-22 13-21 in another match. In women's singles, Sayali beat Tanvi 21-17 21-10, while Trupti battled past Mudra Dhainje 24-22 12-21 21-18. But Shruti could not get across China's Xin Liu 12-21 8-21, Thulasi fought hard before losing 18-21 21-17 18-21 to Shizuka Uchida of Japan, Saili could not get across Japan's Minatsu Mitani and lost 16-21 821 in another women's singles match.

ROUSING NIGHT FOR CHAMPIONS LEAGUE P Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, APRIL 3, 2014

ARIS: Manchester United showed great spirit in a 1-1 draw with holders Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final while Atletico Madrid gained the upper hand against Barcelona. United led at Old Trafford through a Nemanja Vidic header, and while Bastian Schweinsteiger soon got a precious away goal for Bayern, the ailing Premier League champions will have been boosted by the nature of their performance against their muchfancied opponents. Atletico, meanwhile, hold the advantage going into the second leg of their all-Spanish tie against Barcelona thanks to a brilliant away goal scored by Diego Ribas, although Neymar scored to earn the Catalans a 1-1 draw. With Bayern already having won the German Bundesliga title and United struggling at home under David Moyes, many expected the visitors to coast to a comfortable victory, but the hosts defended doggedly and succeeded in frustrating their opponents for large spells. United had an early Danny Welbeck goal disallowed and the England striker then missed a glorious chance to open the scoring when he tried to chip Bayern 'keeper Manuel Neuer when clean through on goal. The hosts opened the scoring in the 58th

minute, Vidic twisting his neck to divert a Wayne Rooney corner from the left into the net at the far post. Bayern were level just nine minutes later, however, as substitute Mario Mandzukic knocked down a Rafinha cross and Schweinsteiger swept the ball into the roof of the net. Bayern were unable to make it a record eight straight away wins in the Champions League and Schweinsteiger was later sent off after a late challenge on Rooney saw him booked for a second time. Javi Martinez will also be banned for the return leg at the Allianz Arena next Wednesday. "I am quite satisfied. Manchester United has one of the best teams in the world," said Bayern coach Pep Guardiola. "It is always dangerous when you go into the second leg with a 1-1 draw, but even a 2-1 victory would have been dangerous. We will try to win the second leg and I am sure we can do it." For Moyes, there was satisfaction with the performance coupled with the realisation that his side must get a positive result at the Allianz Arena. "The players played really well, so we're delighted, but just a bit disappointed that we conceded in the end," he said. "We know we've got to score a goal in the second leg. We have

Serena stunned by unseeded Cepelova C

HARLESTON: World number one Serena Williams crashed out of the WTA Tour's Family Circle Cup, losing her opening match in straight sets to world number 78 Jana Cepelova. The 20-year-old Slovakian Cepelova shocked defending champion Williams 6-4, 6-4 in a second-round match at the clay court tournament in Charleston. The 17-time Grand Slam winner Williams complained about being mentally fatigued after the 84 minute contest. "I am really just dead," said the 32-year-old American. "I need some weeks off where I don't think about tennis and can kind of regroup. I've had a long couple of years." Williams, who won this event in 2013, 2012 and 2008, also had her 15-match tour win streak snapped. Williams was fresh off winning her sixth Miami title and 59th singles crown after beating world No. 2 Li Na, of China, on the weekend. "I actually made the turnaround really good," Williams said. "Obviously things didn't go great out there." Unseeded Cepelova, who appears to be headed for a breakout year, was facing Williams for the first time. Cepelova won 55 per-

cent of her first serves and 71 of 136 total points. She advances to face Elena Vesnina of Russia, who beat another Slovakian, Anna Schmiedlova, 62, 6-1. Williams, 32, blasted four aces but committed three double faults. She won just 12 of 28 points on her second serve. "I really knew nothing about her game going into the match," Williams said. "She was a great counterpuncher. She played the best she can play."

SPORTS IN BRIEF

Cook in favour of Pietersen axe

LONDON: England captain Alastair Cook has given his backing for the "brave call" to end the international career of Kevin Pietersen. Despite being England's leading run scorer across all formats, South Africa-born batsman Pietersen was axed by the England and Wales Cricket Board in February following the team's 5-0 Ashes thrashing in Australia. But exactly why he was sent into seemingly permanent international exile remains a mystery, with ECB statements citing a need for team "rebuilding" and "trust" raising more questions than answers. Test and one-day skipper Cook, to his evident discomfort, was unable to shed any more light when speaking publicly for the first time about Pietersen's axing during Essex's media day on Tuesday. But left-handed opener Cook was in no doubt the correct decision had been taken even though in 2010 World Twenty20 winner Pietersen's absence -- and that of Cook, who doesn't play in the format -- the side bowed out of this year's edition with an embarrassing dead-rubber defeat by the non-Test Netherlands in Bangladesh on Monday.

to do something about it. But we know we've given ourselves a great opportunity." And Atletico have the edge as well against Barcelona after drawing with the Catalans for the fourth time in all competitions this season but grabbing a precious away goal. However, while they will be pleased to come away from the Camp Nou with a 1-1 draw, they lost leading scorer Diego Costa to a hamstring injury that looks likely to rule him out of next week's match at the Vicente Calderon. Costa has scored 33 goals for Atletico this season, but his replacement Ribas scored the opening goal on the night on 56 minutes with a superb strike that arrowed into the net at Jose Manuel Pinto's near post. Barca, who had earlier lost Gerard Pique to an injury that will see him out of action for the next four weeks, then piled on the pressure and got their reward when Neymar latched on to a glorious pass from Andres Iniesta and finished past Thibaut Courtois in goal.

Mumbai outclass Saurashtra for second victory M

UMBAI: Riding on some powerful batting lower down the order and a tidy bowling effort, Mumbai thrashed Saurashtra by 16 runs in the West Zone T20 league game at the MCA's BKC ground here. Put in to bat, Mumbai started slowly before Sarfaraz Khan and Sujit Nayak batted aggressively to guide the team to a challenging total of 145 for five. The duo, both of who remained unconquered, piled on 46 runs in just 16 balls for the sixth wicket. Sarfaraz, who made his T20 debut, made a breezy 20-ball 36 that included four fours and a six while Nayak played a blinder, scoring 23 runs off seven balls with tbe help of two fours and as many sixes. Openers Aditya Tare (29) and Sushant Marathe (25) forged a 46-run stand to lay a good platform before both were beaten by flight and stumped off left arm spinner Arpit Vasavda who picked up four wickets. Saurashtra started the run chase slowly and scored just 19 runs in the first six over. They couldn't accelerate their innings and fell short of the target at 129 for seven.

31

Cheteshwar Pujara opened the innings to make a 60-ball 62 and stuck seven fours and a straight field six off left-arm spiner Nayak. The India Test no. 3 played a lone hand to remain unbeaten till the penultimate over while Sheldon Jackson made 26 and skipper Jaydev Shah notched up 14. Pujara was dismissed while trying to find a boundary and Sushant Marathe took a brilliant catch at deep mid- wicket off the bowling of Mumbai captain Zaheer Khan. Left arm Zaheer got rid off Pruthvi Solanki in the next ball and would have got another wicket in the same over but for a dropped catch. Mediumpacer Prathamesh Dhake scalped three wickets, while Zaheer bagged two. This was Saurashtra's second successive loss and Mumbai's second win in three games. Brief scores: Mumbai 145 for 5 (Sarfaraz Khan 36, Aditya Tare 29, Sushant Marathe 25; Arpit Vasavada 4 for 19, Jaydev Unadkat 1 for 37) beat Saurashtra 129 for 5 (Cheteshwar Pujara 62, Sheldon Jackson 22; P Dhake 3 for 25, Zaheer Khan 2 for 29) by five wickets.

DUBAI: India captain Mithali Raj has retained her fifth position to be the highest-placed Indian batter, while Poonam Raut and Harmanpreet Kaur also figured in the top 10 list of the latest ICC Women's Player Rankings for T20Is issued on Wednesday. Mithali, with 646 points, is placed behind Meg Lanning of Australia who is heading the list with 688 points. While Harmanpreet gained two positions to be at ninth place, Poonam lost a position to be at eighth spot. India now have three batters in the top 10 chart, the most for any team. However, none of the Indians figure in the top-10 bowlers' list. Medium pacer Jhulan Goswami is the only one in the top 20 table. Jhulan has lost two places to be at 17th position. Meanwhile Sri Lanka captain Siriwardena has taken over as the number one ranked all-rounder for the firsttime ever on the all-rounders' list.

BAI brushes aside IBL clash of dates with Super Series event

MUMBAI: Badminton Association of India is not too concerned with the dates of Denmark Super Series event clashing with the latter part of the 2nd edition of Indian Badminton League. "The dates of IBL have been fixed after giving due consideration to all events. It's not a big concern and we can even bring the dates of IBL forward by a day or two if needed," a BAI source told PTI. The source was reacting to a news report that the major shuttlers of the world, including India's top woman players Saina Nehwal and P V Sindhu, may not be available for the entire duration of IBL which is scheduled from September 30-October 15. The Denmark Open Super Series tournament is scheduled from October 14-19. He said that the first couple of days of the Super Series event would normally be for conducting the qualifying rounds.
