Since the time the Tejpal scandal broke out, the media especially the anchors on the news channels are debating as if they are holier than thou! Do the journalists themselves know whether there is a committee to probe into sexual harassment or not. Manek Kalyaniwala Lawyer Yes. In all walks of our lives and aspects, we are having a downpour of moral degradation and the media is a small speck of it.

omeopathy doctors across Maharashtra were on strike yesterday for their various demands. Among their demands were implementation of interpathic course, independent work for homeopathy hospitals, a good salary for homoeopathy doctors who work with National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and the inclusion of homoeopathy doctors in government hospitality services, taking back cases registered against homoeopathy hospitals and enrollment of LIC, BEST, RTO and other government services for homeopathy doctors. Around 6,000 doctors from across Maharashtra protested for their demands which have been pending for over a decade now. Dr. Pratik Tambe, president of Homoeopath Intenerated Medical Practioners’ Assocation, Navi Mumbai Branch, held a protest at Navi Mumbai wherein 300 doctors from the satellite city had gathered. We are July, 2014!

We are glad to inform you that the judging process for the photo contest Mumbai Moments 2014, undertaken by the Press Club for its annual calendar, is over. And the ADC is July! That is, our photographer Azad Shrivastav, who has featured earlier as well, memorably as November 2012, when he took a picture of triplets born on

One day in July 2013, as it poured in Mumbai and the waters rose, this family stayed glued to the television, possibly seeing better circumstances on the screen than life was offering them at that moment.

11/11/11, has won a place in this prestigious project, and understandably we are very proud. The images for the contest were required to capture Mumbai’s mood – the memorable moments that make the city what it is. And Azad went to town in July, snapping a family stoically facing the worst that the monsoon could throw at them. This one was really bad, taken in Delisle Road, not exactly one of the most salubrious spots in

Mumbai. A record of 85 photographers submitted 900 entries and competition was stiff. Finally, 13 were selected to represent 12 months and of course, the cover. Now just wait for the calendar.

with an added heart enlargement and lung cancer, is difficult enough when you do it even for a loved one. There are no two opinions about this hard truth of life. Now, imagine doing it for a dog! Yet we know of this dog lover who is doing all this and more for his

pug called Appy. Owner of the Mumbai Hospital Chemist near Bombay Hospital, this dog lover, Surendra Kumar Ranawat, feeds at least 60 stray dogs from Byculla to Marine Lines on a daily basis. In fact, he has two people working just to distribute over 20 litres of

Caring for someone old suffering from arthritis, blind in both eyes

Remembering Niranjan Jhaveri

Sound man Roger Drego writes: “I would like everyone who remembers Niranjan for the huge contribution he made to the world of music, especially jazz which he dearly loved. “Niranjan worked for many years, trying to spread this music to all corners of India, including the city of Mumbai with the Jazz Yatra. I feel it only just that we show a small token of our appreciation by attending the concert by Dana Gillespie to be held at St Andrews Auditorium on the 8th of December. “We would start this concert with a small AV, remembering him. Please inform all music lovers.” Niranjan passed away on May 21, 2010, and according to jazz.com, he was also born on the same day in 1929, in Antwerp, coming to Mumbai (then Bombay) as a six-monthold baby whose father was in the diamond business. If these dates are correct, there is an odd kind of neatness in his existence, and jazz gets all

the credit. His name is synonymous with jazz and its celebrations in Mumbai, particularly the Jazz Yatra, now called the Jazz Utsav. Famous for lectures and workshops all over the USA and Europe since 1990m he also taught that learning Indian classical vocal techniques, especially ornamentation or the tarana, would greatly benefit jazz singers. At his invitation, singers came to Bombay and learned Indian vocal techniques in a Residency Program. Ann Dyer came from San Francisco in 1996, followed by Lisa Young from Australia. He invited Ellen Christi and Joan Beal, and later singer/guitarist Leni Stern. But those who were closest to his heart, were also closest to his home (in a manner of speaking), Portugal’s Maria Joao, Asha Puthli and Christine Correa. On Sunday, as part of the Simply the Blues festival, Dana Gillespie will be singing at St Andrews. And the auditorium will remember Niranjan.

milk to strays across the city everyday. No wonder, when it comes to his own pet, he pulls out all the stops. Apart from celebrating the dog’s birthday on April 4 every year, like one would do for one’s own child, the man ensures that his old and ailing pug gets the best of care. Having exceeded his normal lifespan - which veterinarian Dr. Dronapatil puts between 10 and 12 years for a pug – Appy is nearing fourteen years and suffering from arthritis, is blind in both eyes, has an enlarged heart and lung cancer. Nevertheless, the treatment he gets can best be described as tender. As children, we remember what happened to dogs who got old and suffered from the kind of old age things dogs generally do. Putting them down was not considered cruel, especially when the animal was obviously suffering with no hope of getting well. Veterinarians too were rough and ready types who pulled no punches when giving you the prognosis. Now of course it is different, and animal lovers have a vet on speed dial, just as they have a paediatrician for their children. Nor are these ordinary vets but specialists in a range of disciplines, including animal dentistry! Ranawat of course will have none of the dire alternative. When asked if he would put his pet to sleep - read death - as is normally done with pets in such cases, he angrily says, “Would you put a family member to sleep if he was so ill? Appy is a part of my family and till his last breath he will be well taken care off”. Somewhere, perhaps in a past life, Appy must have been a very good whatever he was, indeed!

fter a categorical assurance from Chief Secretary J.S. Saharia to consider the demands, Mantralaya officials have postponed their Tuesday’s day long strike (Kaam Bandh Andalon). Saharia called the representatives of Mantralaya Officers Association (MOA) yesterday afternoon for the discussion. Initially he gave a patient hearing to their various demands. Later, he directed the PWD secretary to make necessary changes in the sitting arrangement of the Mantralaya by providing cabins to the officials. He also instructed to convey the meeting of the top ranking officials of the General Administration Department (GAD) and Revenue department during winter session of the state legislature to discuss the remaining demands of the officials. The MOA had announced a day long strike on Tuesday to press for their demands. One of their de-

It had also asked those not participating in the strike to ensure the offices are open and functioning on that day. It had further stated that police help could be sought in case of trouble. During the meeting with the Chief Secretary, the officials have expressed their displeasure over the new arrangement inside the Mantralaya. These officials pleaded that after the refurbishing of Mantralaya, the interior had become congested, thereby hampering the day to day working. As of now, all I know is that there is more than one complainant, maybe around five to six women. The complainants have said that Bhokre used to pass comments on them. MUMBAI | TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2013 Vinayak Mulay said, “We have registered a case against unknown accused for the investigation and have recovered the CCTV footage of the building. We are doing our best to crack the case”. Sources from Vakola police station revealed that this car has been stolen for the second time from the same place. It was first stolen around two years ago in January 2011 and was later found in Kolkata during a naka bandi. According to complainant Sadeep Bhosle, it is a lapse in the duty of the building watchman who was allegedly sleeping inside the building during his working hours. The police further revealed that two years ago two Kolkata-based robbers had been arrested in this connection. The word ‘Police’ is written on the car when it was recovered earlier. “We suspect that more than four accused may be involved in the crime, and they are habitual robbers. They have broken open six locks in the car including that of the GPRS system in the car. They had not done so in their earlier attempt. We will crack the case soon”, Mulay said. Ponder awhile... “Humanity has the stars in its future, and that future is too important to be lost under the burden of juvenile folly and ignorant superstition.” — Isaac Asimov

Juvenile crime: A pragmatic approach needed S

HOULD a juvenile criminal receive the same kind of punishment as an adult? In many criminal incidents, boys between the age of 18 and 16 have been found to be more ferocious and savage than adults. The Nirbhaya gang rape case proved that. Of the five men involved in the crime, the juvenile was the most brutal. He used an iron rod to attack the rape victim and treated her mercilessly. He had no sense of remorse at all as the fatally wounded victim of rape was thrown out of the moving bus. And the punishment he got was just three and a half years – at a juvenile remand home. The Delhi incident has focused attention on the problem. There is a growing opinion that punishment should be given not as per age but on the basis of the brutal nature of the crime. It looks like a juvenile crime has to be considered from an entirely different angle. For instance, a 16-year-old boy is not a child. At that age, the boy may not be fully mature, but can it be said that maturity arrives only on the 18th birthday of a boy? It is possible that at 16, some boys continue to be really juvenile in their outlook, but perhaps the majority of 16 and 17-year-olds are quite grown ups. Light punishment and stay at comfortable remand home will embolden juvenile folks to commit more crimes. With the knowledge they will not have to undergo any harsh punishment, the juveniles go out and resort to monstrous crimes. In such a situation, they do not have to worry about a death sentence or a life term in jail. It is time, perhaps the UPA government at the Centre changed its policy with regard to juvenile crime and punishment. The Supreme Court has sought the view of the government in this regard and it is likely the response of the latter will be a more pragmatic and positive approach to the problem.

W

ITHIN a few minutes of my arrival at Dhaka, I was in the midst of a debate as to whether the parliamentary elections, to be held on January 5, 2014, would be fair and independent. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has constituted an allparty interim government and has even offered Begum Khalida Zia, who is her main opponent and heads the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). But Sheikh Hasina is ‘the problem’ with Begum Khalida. I can say after my five-day stay in Bangladesh that the polls would be fair if Khalida Zia boycotts them, which looks very much to be on the cards. Sheikh Hasina does not want to step down and looks like she is going to any extent to retain power. She amended the state’s constitution which provided for a caretaker government, headed by the outgoing retired Supreme Court Chief Justice, to supervise the polls. What amazes me is the alacrity with which Sheikh Hasina has frittered away her fourfifths of majority in parliament. Her mis-governance has increased corruption, contaminating even the government functionaries in villages. Begum Khalida has aggravated the situation by organizing a hartal every third day, hitting the common man. Sheikh Hasina too had organised hartals when she was in the wilderness. The two Begums, becoming prime minister alternatively, have talked to each other on the phone probably for the first time. There is no breakthrough, not even via the conciliators, because of personal hostility. There is enough evidence to support the suspicion that Begum Khalida’s close associates were behind the attack on Sheikh Hasina’s meeting when she was out of power.

Mujibur Rahman had ushered in. Such sentiments have brought Sheikh Hasina popularity in India which too has adopted pluralism as the basic structure of its polity. But just as Narendra Modi, the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, has cast shadows on its secular credentials, Khalida Zia has done in Bangladesh. A country which evoked hope when it liberated itself on the principle that religion would not be mixed with politics, is today exhibiting an entirely different scenario. Poverty is opium for the masses as Karl Marx has said. The need of the Left is felt immensely. Bangladesh had a strong community party. Now it is reduced to a rump and tends to tilt towards the establishment. Tragically, it is the

Had there been hope of the Left’s revival, 70 per cent of the subcontinent’s people, extremely poor, might not have had to listen to religious appeal as a force to propel progress. For years the Bengalis in East Pakistan had chaffed under governments that favoured the cultural and economic development of West Pakistan. The then moderate Awami League, with a clear majority gained in the freest and fairest election in years, could implement its Six Point Plan, giving East Pakistan autonomy in all areas except foreign affairs and defence. Instead, Yahya Khan used the military to suppress the movement.

Growth in Bangladesh However, I have found lately in Pakistan, the regret over having lost part of the country because of the late Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s follies. One of Pakistan’s leading lawyers said that they could now appreciate how the Indians felt about the division in 1947 when the British quit. The post-liberation generation, nearly 65 per cent of Bangladesh’s population does not know what its forefathers went through to win freedom. Nor does it care to inquire. Surprisingly, there is no good book to describe the privations of those days available. Over the years, I have found self-confidence and optimism increasing among the people. Despite the internal turmoil, Bangladesh has sustained six per cent growth for the last decade. Human development statistics are far between than those of India. Agriculture growth has made the country self-sufficient while the garment industry, although not following labour laws, is thriving. No doubt, there is widespread poverty and the gulf between the rich and the poor is yawning. Yet the rural areas have done so much better and the people from there do not flock into cities as they used to do during the flood or scarcity. They may rough it out, but they are self-developed. This is indeed commendable. The future is no doubt unpredictable, but may see a large scale of violence, particularly at the time of elections because Begum Khalida is opposed to the polls under Sheikh Hasina. Many people think that the army can come back as it did some years ago. But it withdrew when it found that the people were committed to democracy even if it had been disfigured by the two Begums. One leading editor has gone to the extent even suggesting an intervention by the judiciary. He says, “We have nowhere to turn to but to the custodians of our constitution of law and citizens’ rights.”

F we look deeply, we see that we have caused a lot of suffering around us just by eating, by the way you consume. Every time you drink a glass of alcohol, if you look deeply, you can see the amount of grain that has been used to make that glass of alcohol. Countless people die every day because they don't have the food. UNESCO reported that every day more than 40,000 children die due to starvation or lack of nutrition and yet we still eat meat and drink liquor. In order to produce a piece of meat, you have to use a lot of brains, and eating meat like that, drinking alcohol like that, is no different from eating the flesh of your own son and daughter. Who are they, the 40,000 children who die every day? Maybe they are not our children. Who are they? We are ruining our planet by the way of eating. We are bringing a lot of toxins into our body and into the body of our family and that is why practice in mindful eating is a very important. Team selection for SA tour is a travesty AS in the past, Indian cricket selectors have made a mess by selecting players who are up the hill or players who are injury prone, for a tough tour of South Africa. The batting is good only on paper and even against a lowly placed side like the West Indies, we lost the cream of our batting early and recovered only through tail-enders. This will not be possible against the lethal South African attack as they will pounce on Indian tail enders if the top order succumbs to genuine fast bowling by being caught behind the wicket. Zaheer Khan, who was on the injured list most of the time recently, has come into the side at the expense of a promising Jaydev Unadkat. Again, Dinesh Karthik is a better option as wicket keeper instead of Wriddhiman Saha. How Ishant Sharma has come into the side with his pathetic form is a million dollar question. Since Sachin Tendulkar retired after his 200th test, the quota has gone to another Mumbai player Ajinkya Rahane and not to an inform Badrinath. Thus, regional bias and quota system continues to haunt Indian team selection. —C.K.S. Maniam and Jayanthy Maniam, Sion

SHIKHAR Dhawan is the cricketer of the year 2013 as he amassed his 6th international ton, the highest by any cricketer in international cricket this year, which includes one Test hundred and five centuries in ODI’s. set Windies captain Darren Sammy who gleefully despatched them to the boundary. Kumar had already conceded some seven runs in the same over. This proved to be the turning point in the match which was going on even keel until then. IN ODIs, the 48th over is turning out to be the nemesis for Team India in recent matches — it was in the 48th over that Ishant Sharma gifted 30 runs in the Mohali match against the Aussies which we lost and again it was in the same jinxed 48th over that the normally dependable Bhuvaneshwar Kumar bowled two consecutive full tosses to the well-

Management of the BPP IT is sad that a group of Trustees of the Bombay Parsi Panchayat (BPP) decided to take action against the Chairman of the Trust. It is even more sad that the Chairman has been alleged to have acted beyond the limits of his power and that there is a charge of financial mismanagement. If one is to visit the past, one would recall that before this group was elected to office, our old trustees had resigned en masse objecting to the manner in which Mr. Dinshaw Mehta operated. I am of the firm opinion that the previous team of trustees knew what they were doing and resigned for valid reasons. They may be labelled as ‘Sethjis’ but they were an honest and dedicated lot and Mr. Mehta was the sore thumb whose questionable activities disturbed the equilibrium. I hope that he is removed from the BPP so that further damage to the entire community and its good name is not sullied any more.

IT is not surprising to note the likes of Warner and Clarke scoring centuries and Mitchell Johnson excelling in extracting bounce and the pace to get to a facile win in Brisbane dismissing England in both the innings for meager totals less than 200. The same players had come a ‘cropper’ against India in India early this year, shabbily losing all the Tests by

huge margins. The sledging is supposed to have reached alarming proportions and even Michael Clarke is said to have used foul language, which coming as it does from a captain is unpardonable. Jonathan Trott who is a player of repute and a solid No.3 for England is said to have left the team and departed to England citing stress related illness. This is certainly going to adversely affect the performance of England. All these go to show that, of late, every team seems to excel while performing at home but look decrepit and pedestrian abroad on most occasions although there are a few exceptions. — T.M. Uday Shankar, Mumbai

TROTT does not need to confess to the media but he should go to the coaching staff and tell them he has an issue against that kind of bowling. You do not play shots like the ones he did without something being seriously wrong in his mind. For the first time in his career Trott is facing a question mark about how he is going to cope with stress. Graham Thorpe and Marcus Trescothick have gone through that sort of period in the past and emerged stronger. Trott can do the same but he has hard work ahead of him because his problem is against pace and stress, an issue which is hard to resolve. Before England played Australia in 2005, I remember Marcus Trescothick openly admitted in the dressing room at Headingley that he had a problem playing Glenn McGrath. Success and failure are part and parcel of active cricket but Trott is not a sure shot to handle stress. — C.K. Subramaniam, Sanpada

EVEN after five years of 26/11 terror attack in which 166 people were killed, nothing has changed in terms of our security and the reason is that our response has not been a cohesive one, and there is no formulation of a coherent plan of action like the US did after the 9/11 terrorist attack. AS per a report appearing in a section of the print media, the UP govt. is disbursing Rs.90 crore as a fast track relief to Muslim victims of the Muzaffarnagar riots. This is certainly in keeping with their sacrosanct principle of “secularism” to which the Samajwadi Party govt. in Lucknow is devoutly wedded to. It also makes one thing clear, that there is not a single Hindu victim who has suffered during the communal disturbances, and therefore, is not eligible for any compensation from the Akhilesh Yadav govt. — Arun Malankar, Santa Cruz

Wadghar and Wahal has been exempted from the high-tide zone under the 2011 coastal regulatory zone thus clearing the way for resettlement. A detailed proposal to the Ministry of Environment and Forests and the PMO will be sent by the CIDCO soon. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

This stay comes as the City Civil Court presided over by judge M.S. Sharma last week had given Pawar a week’s time to challenge the order in the HC. Earlier, the court had passed the interim order while hearing an application by senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde, seeking that Pawar be restrained from functioning as MCA president with regard to the pending hearing of his suit challenging Pawar’s election as its chief. Munde had in October approached the city civil court, challenging the MCA’s decision to allow Pawar to contest its elections. In his suit, Munde had maintained that he, too, had applied for the same post as Pawar, but the MCA had rejected his application on the grounds that his address on the electoral records was of his home town

Sharad Pawar tion, and Gorwadkar as respondents. According to MCA rules, only a Mumbai resident can become president of the cricketing body. As per a Bombay High Court order of 2006, a person could have residences in different cities, but he is considered to be a permanent resident of only the place where his name appears on the electoral rolls. The lower court had temporarily restrained Pawar from holding the president’s post and directed for Munde's application to be heard and decided within three months. However, Justice Mohta of the Bombay High Court on Monday stayed the lower court’s order till December 17 and said he would hear Pawar’s petition on December 13. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

It is ideal to have moderate helpings of healthy meals during the day and have a bowl of soup or fruits before you head out for a party.”

>> No time for a proper warm-up? Just a few minutes spent stretching your body is more than enough to get you ready

Avoid just oily food Haven’t we all done this? Avoided oily food and instead gorged on potatoes, pasta, pizza and bread-based dishes? Kaizzad Capadia, co-founder and director of K-11 Fitness Academy, tells us that you should not consume only carbohydrates in the belief that since you’re avoiding oil, you’re staying healthy. He explains that overindulging in carbs will result in direct weight-gain. Instead, keep a balance between all kinds of food.

fact, brisk workout can actually help your hangover! Now, stop looking incredulously at us and try it out. It works.

forgetting wAter What with all the mocktails, cocktails and fruit punches, you will find yourself forgetting to drink water. However, water is water, as Kaizzad puts it and nothing can replace it. This is probably something you’re doing unconsciously. If you can’t remember to drink water, set alarms, but do not forget at any cost. Apart from the obvious benefits, you’ll feel energised and it will also keep you from overeating.

that a trip to the gym is the last thing on your mind. We understand the time constraints and so we aren’t going to tell you to continue with your daily workout plan during the festive season. But, what we are going to tell you is to avoid these mistakes:

soft drinks over neAt Alcohol

skipping it Altogether

Surprise, surprise! You probably thought you’d be safer sticking to cocktails and avoiding alcohol, right? After all, isn’t alcohol harmful for you? Well, it is, but cocktails and fizzy drinks are more harmful. Mickey explains that they are high in sugar content and so, are extremely unhealthy. Have alcohol neat or with water and remember that moderation is the key.

This is the most common fitness mistake that you are likely to make. You’ll just say, ‘I’ll do it tomorrow,’ and your fitness schedule goes for a toss. However, as Kaizzad says, “Change the timing, reduce the duration, cut your workout plan down by half, but exercise at all cost.” He further adds that exercising becomes more important right now as it ensures that your body’s metabolism and fat burning process work as effectively as possible.

detox diets Either because of guilt or because you want to compensate after a party, you’ll put yourself on a restrictive diet that will do you more harm than good. Dr. Niti Desai, consultant nutritionist from South Mumbai, who is also attached to Cumballa Hill Hospital & Heart Institute, tells us, “Instead of detox diets, start eating sensibly; cut down on excess calories and eat small meals frequently. After overeating fat and carbs during the festive season, increase your intake of protein rich foods.”

skin & hAir cAre Exfoliating, cleansing and moisturising are put on the backburner and because you are busy with the festivities, you often forget to remove your makeup before going to bed. All these habits are bad for your skin and this shouldn’t be so, because to look good, your skin needs to feel good too — after all, there’s only so much that makeup can do for your looks. Hair bears a lot of brunt as well, because of all the chemicals that it is subjected to. To ensure that you have healthy skin and hair during the celebrations, avoid these mistakes:

Applying too much foundAtion While you can apply foundation to make yourself look gorgeous and hide blemishes, too much of it actually clogs fine lines and makes you appear older. Mickey tells us that one should opt for softer, more natural tones. They harm your skin less and also create a seemingly natural glow.

over-exfoliAting Several women think that exfoliating frequently is going to enhance the glow of their skin. This is not true. It’s best to

the hAngover effect

exercise With so many invites to RSVP and numerous things to sort out, we’re sure

exfoliate no more than once a week, because this gives new skin cells a chance to grow and your skin the time to replenish and rehydrate. Over-exfoliation causes wrinkles, dry skin and scarring. So, exfoliate only when it is essential.

sleeping with mAkeup on Your skin uses the time you’re sleeping to renew itself and if you’re wearing makeup while your skin is trying to do this, it’ll cause blemishes and dry, dull skin. If you don’t have a lot of time to remove makeup in a step-by-step process, at least wash your face with soap twice, moisturise it and then go to bed. If your makeup is very heavy and you know that when you get home you’ll simply hit the bed, then start removing it while you are on your way back home.

going overboArd with styling tools With all those holiday parties, chances are you’re embracing styling tools more than ever for your hair. Consider applying leave-in conditioner spray that has antifrizz properties, especially before styling with heat appliances, or lightly during and after wet/dry combing and styling. This will help protect and reduce static

Yes, we know exercising or even moving slightly, is the last thing you want to do when you are hungover from last night’s party. But, it works as just another excuse to not work out during the festive season — something you need to avoid. And in

and flyaways, while adding shine and lustre. It will also help prevent breakage of hair and split ends.

using lots of products Are you using a strong cleanser, a toner, an exfoliation cream, eye cream, face moisturiser, makeup remover and lots of other products? You might want to slow down and read this. By mixing and matching too many products, you may be doing more harm than good. All those ingredients might cancel each other’s properties out, leaving you with no benefits whatsoever. All you need is a cleanser, moisturiser and exfoliation routine, not just for the festive season, but through the year. You don’t need a variety of products to get results.

In our first point, we mentioned that you can reduce your workout intensity. But, heavy lifts shouldn’t be the only casualty of a truncated exercise regime. Kaizzad tells us that people have a misconception that heavy lifting only improves the appearance of your body, toning it superficially. That is wrong, he says, adding, “One set of deadlifts can actually result in a higher fat loss than 50 ab crunches. So, don’t completely give up on squats or deadlifts.”

over-exercising Mickey tells us that another common fitness mistake is over-exercising. Just like detox diets, over-exercising might be a result of you feeling guilty for overindulging in treats. But Mickey explains, “Overdoing your exercises is harmful. It can lead to injuries and loss of motivation. Even simple exercises at home for half hour will help.”

no wArm up Another casualty of hurried workouts will probably be the warm up and cool down period. However, ignoring that means you’re putting yourself at risk of injuries. Just a few minutes of stretching will be more than enough to get you and your body ready for the exercises. So, do not skip warming up.

Eat Right

T

here are people who invest time in rigorous workout routines but still don’t see the results they are aiming for. In spite of following a healthy diet along with their exercise regime, several fitness enthusiasts don’t get the most out of their workout because of the eating errors they make. We tell you about five post-workout diet mistakes you might be making, which restrict you from getting the optimum benefits out of your exercise routine.

>> You may be drinking sports drinks when all you need is a glass of water after your workout

Despite working out regularly and avoiding fatty food, are you still unhappy with your physique? Maybe you are making some eating mistakes after your workout, says Priyanka Singh

BAnning fAt from your life Nutritionists suggest including good fats in every meal. When they say good fats, they mean avocados, nuts and seeds. However, some health freaks are so wary of gaining weight that they don’t even consume good fats because they think that they will be fattening. Getting healthy fats into your system is very beneficial, even if you are aiming to lose weight. These fats help you feel full, increase satiety, shut off hunger hormones and boost antioxidant absorption, which is associated with leanness and increases your metabolic rate, helping you burn more calories. In fact, fat is one of the most vital nutrients in your diet, because it’s a structural part of your cells, which means you can't heal a cell or construct a new one without enough fat to perform these important jobs. Cutting back too much can result in fatigue, chronic hunger, irritability, depression, weak immunity and an increased risk of injury.

instAntly drinking A sports drink If you sweat heavily, work out for more than 90 minutes, or exercise in hot, humid conditions, reaching for a sports drink rather than plain water is a smart way to stay hydrated and replenish the electrolytes lost when you sweat. But, if you’re exercising for less than an hour and a half in a climate-controlled gym, plain water is good enough. The carbohydrates in sports drinks are designed to keep you going when you can’t stop to eat, but if your

muscles don’t need the fuel, you are consuming unnecessary sugar.

not eAting BecAuse you’ll gAin kilos Overcompensating for a workout by eating a big plate of pasta will throw your entire workout down the drain. But, not eating anything is also harmful — striking the right balance is the key. Working out strains your body and it needs nutritious food to repair itself and overcome the brunt of it. It is not just the training that tones your body, but how your body heals after it that mends muscles, boosts metabolism and keeps you fitter. So, you should eat something healthy afterwards in order to allow your body to recover.

eAting only protein After the workout There is a rampant misconception about how you only need to eat protein after your workout. In addition to lean protein, such as a small size of protein rich fish, chicken or lentils, you should also include a healthy fat source, a small serving of whole grain to replenish lost glycogen, some green vegetables and of course, water. All of this will increase the benefits you will reap.

douBle meAls After your workout If you are going to work out and then eat a proper meal (heavy breakfast, lunch or dinner) after an hour or so, then there is no need to grab an energy bar or a smoothie, that is, a recovery meal after the workout. Several people have a small meal immediately after working out and then eat a big one in an hour or so. Consuming these ‘snacks’ just an hour or so before eating a proper dinner will give your body far more than it needs to recover, which results in feeding your fat cells, rather than shrinking them. If you’re going to be eating a meal within an hour of leaving the gym, skip the small meal. If it's going to be a little longer, munch on something such as almonds, which are packed with lots of protein, good fat and nutrients.

« know moRE: almonds & youR appEtitE Do mid-day hunger pangs often see you reaching out for a packet of wafers? Switch to almonds instead. Shirley Mistry tells you why

W

e’ve often been told that a couple of almonds a day boost memory and brain power. A new study further indicates that almonds make for a great snack and control your appetite without increasing your weight.

the study Published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, research in a recent study found that people who incorporated 43g of almonds in their diet, felt less hungry. Also, the calories consumed through these almonds got balanced, as they ended up eating less food during subsequent meals. So, if you’re watching your weight, it may be a

good idea to nibble on some almonds every few hours. The study also showed that despite eating additional calories every day, the participants did not put on additional weight at the end of the month. Even though an approximate 250 calories were consumed solely through almonds, it did not contribute to an increase in weight. Also, during the course of this study, participants were not asked to control any other aspect of their diet, apart from their almond intake. The important thing to note is that the study shows that almonds work better at controlling your appetite when they’re eaten as a snack as compared to eating them along with a meal. The high fibre, protein and unsaturated fat content found in almonds, helps bring about the

end result. Another study also indicates that although almonds are touted to be fatty, your body doesn’t absorb all the fat that an almond contains, therefore making the net fat you consume significantly lower. The best way to eat almonds is raw and as a snack. However, if you don’t find them palatable, toss them into salads and chutneys.

All in good meAsure >> Grab some almonds to curb hunger, without gaining any weight

Remember that almonds contain a lot of oxalates that can cause kidney stones. Also, eat dry, roasted and unsalted almonds as opposed to those that are salted or roasted with oil as they do more harm than good.

eaT, eaT, eaT! Dry, itchy skin can be caused by a bad diet too. During winter, a diet that’s not rich in healthy fats (even if the weather outside isn’t chilly) will make your skin dry and itchy. Make sure you eat foods such as walnuts and incorporate oily fish into your diet.

avoiD air-conDiTioneD rooms With the temperature dropping, you must remember that even if you don’t feel cold, the temperature has fallen by a certain degree. This means that your skin, which usually doesn’t do well in an air-conditioned room for too long, is going to dry out more. Avoid sitting in an AC room continuously for very long to prevent itchy, flaky skin.

« 10 wayS to

1 sTay hyDraTeD The one thing that most people forget about during winter is to drink enough water. Your body doesn’t crave liquids as much as it does during summer, making it hard to remember to stay hydrated. Set alarms if you’re prone to forgetting, but make sure you drink 6-8 glasses of water every day.

Prevent a winter itch Winter leaves your skin dry, weathered and flaky, which can lead to uncomfortable peeling skin or even a rash. Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you how to treat it

9

be genTle Just like the hot water can strip your skin, harsh soap can do the most damage during the winter months. Use a very gentle cleanser or body wash — something that is soap-free is actually a good idea. Washes that contain petroleum jelly are very good for your skin.

rom feeling good about your well-sculpted body to enjoying the release of happy hormones, different people have different reasons for working out. There are no right or wrong reasons — just factors that make you want to work out and factors which you can take advantage of to increase your fitness levels. In this quiz, we tell you what your fitness motivation is and how you can make the most of it.

1. How long have you been working out? a. Ever since I attended a group spinning session at my local gym. b. A long time, but I only exercise when I feel my body is getting out of shape. c. Ever since I started reading articles about how heart diseases are becoming common and how exercise can prevent them. d. Exercising has always been a part of my lifestyle. e. Since I found out that I am 15 kilos overweight.

While warming up, which of the following would you commonly be found doing? a. Talking to my workout buddies. b. Looking at myself in the mirror.

You need motivation to exercise and all of us have different things that drive us to work out every day. Dev Goswami recommends you take this quiz and find out what gives you a push

2. What is your ideal workout session? a. A game of football or any other sport with my friends. b. Working out alone in front of the mirror, doing exercises that will sculpt my abs, thighs and arms. c. A long jog in my neighborhood with a pedometer. d. A high intensity workout such as a boot camp to release stress and have some fun. e. An intense treadmill run where I burn as much fat as possible.

JusT once! No matter how dirty you feel, the truth is that you don’t actually need to shower more than once a day. So, avoid showering multiple times because it will only make you your skin dry and itchy.

Warm iT up Make sure you have only warm baths through the winter. Cold water will irritate your skin and very hot water is equally damaging. This is the most important time of the year to modulate the temperature of the shower. Also, it’s tempting to have a long, warm bath — but keep it short so you don’t strip your skin of natural oils.

>> If you’re trying to manage a career, partying with friends and your personal life just so you don’t miss out on anything, you might end up feeling like this

shielD yourself The summer sun might burn your skin, tan you and make you feel hot and bothered, but the winter sun can lead to premature ageing and rashes. Use a strong sunscreen and cover yourself (don’t shy away from wearing a hat if you must) when you’re outdoors during the day.

TesT your proDucT If the moisturiser that you use is of cheap quality, it’s almost as good as not using one at all. Don’t buy products based on how they look or smell. Make sure you pick up products that have been tested and recommended by experts, or ask your dermatologist if you’re prone to very dry skin.

5

Don’T scrub Leave exfoliation for the warmer months or make sure you exfoliate only once in two weeks and very gently. Your skin is extra sensitive and you don’t want to strip it of its natural oils. Avoid too many scrubs, even on your face, during this time of year.

Getting motivated

Do you feel the need to meet or talk to your friends on a daily basis? a. Yes. b. No. Would you head out to meet friends even if you were unwell? a. Yes. b. No. Do you keep a list of all the

things that you haven’t been able to accomplish? a. Yes. b. No. Are you always trying to make it to outings with different groups of friends, so much so that it occupies all your free time? a. Yes. b. No.

mosTly as You need to stop and breathe. While you love your friends and they know it, there is no need to run from pillar to post because you fear you are missing out on things. You push yourself too much. Although it is great that you’re so driven and committed to your responsibilities, no matter what you do, there are always things you will miss. So, take the time to appreciate what you have without worrying about the things you couldn’t do. mosTly bs I wouldn’t worry if you chose option ‘a’ for one question, because for most part, you seem to understand that there are only so many things you can accomplish without burning out. However, make sure you aren’t heading towards complacency. It is a good thing to have a realistic outlook, but ensure that you aren’t taking things for granted. If you are there for the people you love, stay focussed on maintaining relationships and achieving your targets, you should be just fine.

A way to compensate for that extra helping of dessert.

what motivates you?

Before we tell you what your workout motivation is and how you can make the most of it, we’d just like to reiterate that there is no right or wrong here. As long as you are working out, whatever it is that pushes you to exercise, doesn’t matter as much.

mostly as: a social setting Some people find it hard to believe that working out in a group can be motivating. But, it is one of the best motivations. When you don’t feel like exercising, all you need is your friends to come along with a workout plan and you’ll be up and ready to go. make the most: You might think that working out because you like being social will result in less intense workouts. But, all you need is to make a group workout plan for something intense such as a high intensity trek.

mostly bs: your body We’re guessing that you already knew this, but in case you didn’t, you love working out because it makes you

look great. This is not to be confused with vanity. You are aware of your shortcomings and are willing to go the extra mile to cover up. The only problem with this is that you might not work out when you feel that your body is in perfect shape. make the most: Set targets. Already have a toned butt? Then its time you paid your midriff some attention. Think of how good you’ll look in a swimsuit with toned abs. Also, instead of working out only when you feel you’re not in great shape, work out regularly to keep your body toned.

mostly cs: your health You probably exercise because you’re scared out that you aren’t getting any younger and serious health conditions might catch up with you. You understand how exercise can be beneficial and you will ensure that you stay healthy. make the most: You are happy as long as you get your daily 30-minute jog and that is more than enough in most cases.

mostly Ds: feel good factor You are a workout buff, who believes that working out every day can do wonders for your well-being — both physical and mental. Working out makes you happy and an hour-long session of kick-boxing is something that you cannot do without. make the most: As long as you stay safe, take precautions against injuries and do not go overboard, there is nothing that we need to tell you.

mostly es: Weight-loss You could be Mostly Bs or Cs, but right now, you are obsessed with losing weight. Maybe once you do, your motivation will change. Think of yourself in transit. For now, losing extra weight is your motivator. make the most: Think of more than immediate weight loss — as long as you continue to work out, you’ll lose weight. Instead, think in terms of graduating to three sets of an exercise or adding 5km more to your run. This will help you lose weight faster.

>> If you’re looking for an interesting change in your exercise regime, then try the tyre flipping workout

flip it! W

e’ve all been in that place where the thought of dragging ourselves to the gym to work out with the same routine is exhausting and monotonous. And then there are those who yawn at the mere mention of yoga. Well, the tyre flipping workout maybe the perfect mix of interesting and active to help motivate you. Not only does this work out look super cool, it is great for your body too. Ritesh Shaiwal, fitness manager at Fitness First India Private Limited, gives us some inputs. The gym trains customers through this workout as part of their gym membership itself.

WhaT is iT? Tyre flipping is a regimen that helps you work out your entire body and build your stamina by flipping heavy tyres. Tyre flip workouts are functional training exercises that involve compound movements. Flipping a tyre is a fun way to build power, sport-specific strength and helps with full body conditioning. The tyre flipping workout has proven to be great for those looking to burn fat quickly and to build endurance. The workout was built keeping in mind the need for full body movement and to make a workout more functional rather than isolated. It was initially used in cross fitter training, but in recent times, it has also been incorporated in High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and in functional training as an essential element.

hoW do you do iT? Shutterstock

The tyre flipping workout uses a large tractor or truck tyre. You can find one at an auto-body shop or even a junkyard. The weight of the tyre should be 30-35 kilos. To prep your body for the tyre flips, start with 10 repetitions each of body weight squats and

lunges. Follow this up with kettlebell or dumbbell swings, where you swing the weight to eye-level and back. l Getting to the actual flips, place the tyre upright and stand two feet behind it. l Next, spread your feet out a little wider than shoulder width. l Then, with each of your hands, grip a tread of the tyre. l Use your shoulder and chest strength to lift the tyre at a 30° angle. This should lift the tyre off the ground. l Try and channel the energy from your core to lift it further. l Once you lift it to a 45-60° angle, wedge your knee and use the top of your quad muscles to give it an additional push before you begin the process of flipping it over. l This should give you enough leverage to use your hands to push it over.

BeneFiTs Tyre flips help you generate explosive amounts of strength and power, while making you functionally fit. Moreover, they help you train more than one muscle group, benefitting your quadriceps, hamstring muscles, back and core.

rememBer To... It is a good idea to eat a mix of carbohydrates and proteins after your workout. If you are flipping outdoors, make sure not to do it when it is raining, or in an area where it is too sandy, as you may slip without adequate grip. Wear proper shoes and most importantly, do not try this on your own without consulting with, or learning the workout from a trainer.

Botox For Your Feet After face lifts and breast enhancements, Botox injections can now help your feet too. Shirley Mistry tells you how Botox can keep foot pain at bay

I

f you like to strut around in one of your several pairs of heels every time you head out of your house, in all likelihood, you suffer from Stilletotarsal — also known as planter fasciitis. Characteristically, this is a condition where you feel a sharp pain in the tissue at the ball of your foot, known as the metatarsal area. If you are one of the several women out there who cannot dream of giving up their high heels, Botox for your feet may come as a godsend.

W

eather experts say that temperatures, although they heated up a little last week, are slowly beginning to drop. While we’ll never experience as cold a winter as they do in the north, we can look forward to a break from the sweltering heat with a few nippy nights. Here’s how to make sure a slight drop in the temperature doesn’t get the better of you.

In the simplest terms, during this treatment, Botox is injected into the balls of your feet to relieve you from the pain. Dr. Manoj Khanna, chairman and cosmetologist at Enhance Cosmetic and Aesthetic Studio, says, “The muscles at the bottom of your feet go into a spasm after prolonged periods of wearing high heels. When Botox is injected into the muscles on the bottom of your foot, it stops the muscle from going into spasm, which subsequently numbs the pain.” Although it isn’t an ideal solution, Botox for your feet is definitely the next best option after giving up heels all together — so ask your doctor if you can give this a try!

Save your Skin

Dear Barbara, I have been using moisturising creams on my face for a long time. Recently, one of my friends told me that I should be using special eye creams for the area under my eyes. I have been using my normal creams without any problems. Do I really need to use a special lotion for the area around my eyes? — Simran khanna, matunga Dear Simran, The skin under your eyes is the thinnest and the most sensitive skin on your whole body. What this means is that it can easily get irritated and infected. This is where eye creams come in — they are made specifically to be applied to the area around the eye and so, ensure that the skin around your eyes does not get irritated. This is

Cases of skin cancer are becoming increasingly rampant and catching it early is the key. Shirley Mistry tells you about the simple things you can do to keep the disease at bay >> Applying eye cream is recommended, but not mandatory accomplished by avoiding perfumed products and fragrances around the area. Eye creams are also lighter and thinner than normal creams, making their application easier. So, yes, eye creams do have advantages. That said, if your normal moisturiser has not been giving you any problems, then there is nothing wrong continuing with it. The choice is yours. Dear Barbara, There is a rough dry patch around my lips. First, I thought it was due to weather change and didn’t give it much attention except for applying moisturiser. But, its been a week since its appearance and it refuses to go away. I am getting worried. What do I do? — karishma Goyal, mumbai Central Dear karishma, The dry patch is most probably because of the constantly fluctuating weather. Your skin usually takes around a month to renew and repair itself. And, that time period is extended by environmental conditions such as the cold. So, wait for a bit, it should go away on its own. Just keep applying moisturiser and hide it with makeup when you’re going out. But, do take care as it might a sign of a cancerous cell. If it becomes itchy or painful, visit a doctor. Get yourself checked.” The actor recently underwent surgery for Basil Cell Carcinoma (BCC), which is a condition that develops due to prolonged exposure to the sun and is the main cause for almost 75% of skin cancer cases. BCC takes the form of a pale, slightly red lump or patch on your skin. If it is not diagnosed within early onset, it produces cancerous cells. Also, it can spread to other areas and severely damage surrounding tissues. With the threat of skin cancer becoming more real than ever before, we bring you the best precautions to take, to lower your risk of developing the disease.

Sun Safe You’ve heard this one before, but it’s the most important precaution. You do need a fair dose of vitamin D, but increased exposure to the sun is hazardous. Try to pick a sunscreen that offers protection from both UVA and UVB rays. For our Indian climate, a sunscreen that offers SPF 40-50 is ideal. Also, make sure your sunglasses are of a reliable make and decrease the effect of UV rays. A good pair should cut down 80-90% UV rays.

The easiest way to eat them is by cutting off the top and bottom, pulling out the tough outer leaves and steaming them. Dip the leaves in a vinaigrette or garlic butter, or make a salad.

Apex court asks Centre: ‘Who will decide the maturity of an offender’

EW DELHI: Nearly a year after the brutal gangrape and murder of a 23-year-old girl here, the Supreme Court yesterday sought the Centre’s stand on criminal courts’ power to decide ‘juvenility’ of an offender, who are between the age of 16 to 18 years, in heinous crimes. A bench headed by Justice B.S. Chauhan issued notice and asked the Ministry of Women and Child Development to respond within four weeks to the plea that a criminal court cannot be “ousted” from judicial function to try juveniles for offences covered under IPC. It sought the Centre’s views on the question as to who will decide the maturity of an offender, who is above 16 and below 18 years of age, in matters relating heinous offences, according to a PTI report. The bench, also comprising Justice S.A. ANAJI: Tehelka Editor Tarun Tejpal, arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman journalist, today underwent a potency test which came out positive. Officials at Goa Medical College, where he was brought for the potency test that is mandatory in sexual assault cases, said that the examination fetched positive result. 50-year Tejpal was subjected to various other tests, including blood test, at the college’s forensic department near here. He was medically examined for five hours in the morning and later brought again at 3.15 pm for further tests, sources told PTI. Cong rejects Modi’s call for debate on Art 370 N

EW DELHI: Dismissing his call for a debate on Article 370 of the Constitution, Congress today advised Narendra Modi to discuss the issue first with Sangh Parivar, saying there is already “clarity” in the ruling party about it, reports PTI. Party General Secretary Digvijay Singh also said that he “does not take Modi’s statement very seriously” as the BJP’s Prime Miisterial candidate “keeps changing” it from one place to another. Alluding to recent gaffes of Modi in rallies related to historical events, Singh said that the Gujarat Chief Minister is “unaware of history” and has been speaking “untruth” on

many issues. “As far as my party is concerned, there in clarity on the issue (of Article 370 giving special status to Jammu and Kashmir). If Modi wants to debate, he should debate it within BJP and the Sangh. We have no objection if Modi, BJP and the Sangh debate it within them. We have no objection if they want a public debate...,” Singh said. In what appeared a somewhat softening of BJP’s stand for scrapping Article 370, Modi had yesterday said that there should be at least a debate on whether or not it has benefited J-K. Addressing his first rally in Jammu after being named the BJP’s

prime ministerial candidate, he had said his party wanted a discussion on various aspects of the constitutional provision. Union Minister Manish Tewari was quick to dismiss Modi’s remarks, saying it reveals BJP’s doublespeak. “The manner they speak about Article 370 and Article 371 makes me conclude that they neither read the Constitution of India nor they have cared about detail...They (Modi’s remark) “completely reveals their (BJP’s) doublespeak. 10 years ago, five years ago, one year ago you would hear BJP talking about abrogating Article 370. Investment Highlight: Diversification of products in a single segment of “Home appliances”: The Company has diversified into variety of products under a single segment named “Home appliances” like Refrigerators, Washing machines, Air-conditioners, Microwave Ovens and other built-in appliances. It derives ~59-60% of revenue from Refrigerators, 20-22% from Washing machines, 10-11% from Air-conditioners, 3% from Microwave ovens, ~5% from consumer services and ~2% from others. Recently, the company launched new, innovative and intuitive products in 70% of its portfolio which would be valued for performance, design and differentiated features. With this launch the company aimed for leadership in Refrigerator and Washers in the next 12-15 months and overall leadership in Home Appliances in the next 2-3 years. Focus on innovation and productivity improvement to drive market share and lower cost to help improve margins: Whirlpool India, which has a share of ~20% in the Indian home appliances market pegged at around INR 35,000 crore or 15 million appliances, expects to improve market share by continuous launching of new products and re-engineering product design and components. The company’s raw material cost which account for 55-60% of the total cost, is focusing on improving cost efficiencies in the wake of demand. Also, the company which imports 27-30% of raw materials is now increasing domestic sourcing to save itself from rupee depreciation. We believe that these measures like delivering higher rate of productivity along with cost control is expected to help company realize better margins. Rural demand, increase in disposable income and rapid urbanization to drive demand for mainly refrigerators/washing machines and other home appliances: Rural demand, increase in disposable income and rapid urbanization have always been the major factors for driving demand of home appliances. With penetration of refrigerators and washing machines low in rural areas, the company is ready to tap the opportunity. In rural market, the company is focusing on basic products and in urban market it is focusing on launching new products in premium and super premium range. Debt Free Company; Increasing free Cash flows: We believe Whirlpool India can leverage on its debt-free status to improve net profit margins in the coming years also. The company generates healthy cash flows. Its cash balance has gone up from INR86cr in FY12 to Rs 155 cr in FY13. Hence, healthy cash flows leave much scope for the company to consider dividend payments going ahead. Valuation: At the CMP of INR 171, the stock is trading at forward P/E of 17.44x its FY14e EPS of 9.80 and P/E of 16.47x its FY15e EPS of 10.38. With improving product mix, debt free status, healthy cash flows the company is likely to outperform in future. Hence, we have assigned a P/E multiple of 20x to arrive at a target price of INR 208 per share; an upside of 21%.

A great show at ‘Sur Mansur’

By Vijay Shanker

inad Centre for Performing Arts presented a dance festival featuring three distinct classical dance styles – Bharata Natyam, Mohiniattam and Kathak at the Sathaye college auditorium in Vile Parle. The programme was noteworthy for the sparkling performances that were technically precise too. The talented dancers who featured in the festival were Murugashankari Leo and Anand Satchinandan for Bharata Natyam, Sneha Nambiar for Mohiniattam and Shruti Pande for Kathak. Anand Satchinandan is the disciple of the renowned Guru V.P. Dhananjayan, and his performance was technically perfect with the fine and distinct execution of varied movements but abrupt stopping of the music was distracting not only for the audience but the dancer too. His appearance with a beard looked strange. Sneha Nambiar is the talented disciple of renowned Mohiniattam exponent Dr. Kanak Rele. Sneha commenced the programme with the invocatory Ganpatiye, followed by the pure dance number Panchari Kattla in Malhari ragam, which exposed her elegant movements in the Mohiniattam style. Sneha is a versatile danseuse and revealed her

DANCE FESTIVAL A SPARKLING

By Amarendra Dhaneshwar

yer Foundation, a cultural institution managed and run by Balakrishna Iyer, a veteran tabla player, has been organising the 'Sur Mansur' festival of classical music for the last five years. Iyer has been the late Mallikarjun Mansur's tabla accompanist for well over two decades till Mansur breathed his last in 1993. “Mansur was the greatest male singer from the Jaipur Attrauli gharana belonging to the period between 1940s and 1990s. Therefore, this festival basically features singers from this gharana”, says Iyer. This year the festival began with a vocal recital by Shounak Abhisheki, a leading young singer. He is the son and disciple of the late Jitendra Abhisheki. Jitendra had learned Jaipur Attrauli gharana from Ratnakar Pai who was one of the most significant singers from this school. Shaunak has selected the raga 'Marwa' for elaborate treatment. 'Marwa' is not a Jaipur Attruali gharana raga. It is a 'Siddha' or commonly sung or understood raga. With its flat note 'R' and minimal importance to the tonic 'S', it is one of the most difficult ragas of Hindustani music. Shaunak sang it with due sincerity and dedication. The other raga which he sang was the most appealing 'Hameer'. The compositions were by Ramashray Jha. Abhay Datar on the tabla and Niranjan Lele on the harmonium lent excellent support. Aarti Ankalikar is now a leading Hindustani classical singer. She is a versatile singer adept at many forms of music. “The spectrum of her music is very wide. She sings hard-core raga music with the same mastery as she sings film music or television serial title music”, says sitarist Ravindra Chary. There is that element of ultra flexibility in her taans which instantly hooks the audience. A recipient of many awards, her popularity as a singer has soared over the years. Aarti sang the typical Jaipur Attrauli gharana ragas like 'Bihagada', 'Raisa Kanada'. 'Basanti Kedar' has earned her a special fan following of her own. She sang the raga 'Nand' with a lot of emotion and effervescence. It was a fitting tribute to the late Mallikarjun Mansur.

command over 'abhinaya' in the number ‘kubja’ wherein the dancer interprets the story of the lady who is cursed and serves as a slave in the court of Kamsa but is blessed by Lord Krishna due to her devotion and rises on to become a beautiful woman. Sneha is blessed with a striking personality and can rise further as a danseuse, provided she continues to dance with passion and devotion. The most vivacious dancer of the festival was Murugashankara Leo from Chennai. Murugashankari is a dynamic dancer and dances with ‘joie-devivre’ as was evident in the Swati Tirunal number ‘Shankara Srigiri’ By Sandeep Hattangadi that exposes the grandeur and glory of Lord Shiva, the t is said that destiny decides the fate of a human being but many people believe typical ‘karanas’ that was that self achievement is greater than destiny and we create our own fate. well displayed. ADRID: Barcelona slipped to a second consecutive defeat for the first time since April 2012 as they lost for the first time in the league this season 1-0 away to Athletic Bilbao. Barcelona had suffered their first defeat under coach Gerardo Martino against Ajax in midweek and Athletic appeared to learn from the Dutch champions’ approach as, without the injured Lionel Messi, Barca struggled to impose themselves on the game yesterday. Iker Muniain slotted home the only goal of the game from Markel Susaeta’s cross 20 minutes from time as a third straight win moved the Basques into fourth. The Catalans remain top of La Liga on goal difference only from Atletico Madrid with Real Madrid now just three points behind the leaders. And the champions were left to complain about referee Juan Martinez Manuera’s decision to only show Ander Iturraspe a yellow card when he pulled back Neymar as the Brazilian bore down on goal with the score still at 0-0. “They are a god team and it is difficult when we have chances and don’t take them,” said midfielder Sergio Busquets. “And yes the referee didn’t do his job well either because it is a red card and that made it more difficult. I think that would have changed the game. He was through on the goalkeeper, I don’t know where (Mikel) Balenziaga was but it was a clear one-on-one and for me it is a red card.” On top of Messi’s absence, Barca were also missing Victor Valdes

TIMELY SAVE: Goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz of Athletic Bilbao goes down to halt an attempt by Barcelona’s Gerald Pique with fellow Bilbao player Javier Martinez in close attendance. and Dani Alves and Busquets insisted they have to concentrate on not losing any more ground in the two league games that remain before the winter break with Messi and Valdes due back in January. “We shouldn’t be alarmed. We need to keep going, win the two games between now and the end of the year and learn from the mis-

takes we have made.” Neymar had Barcelona’s best effort of the first-half with a curling effort that was brilliantly tipped over the bar by Gorka Iraizoz. However, it was the hosts that had the better of the chances before the break as Muniain fluffed his lines after Andoni Iraola’s cross was deflected perfectly into his

path before Gorka Toquero headed wide when unmarked from Muniain’s cross. Martino’s men improved after the break as Athletic’s pressing wavered slightly and Neymar should have given them the lead when he raced onto Cesc Fabregas’s fine through ball but slipped as he shot and the ball sailed well over.

South African driver Jeffrey Kruger returned to the top of the podium at the Buddh International Circuit in Race 3 to end the season on a high. Race 2 was redflagged after young driver Samarth Jaiswal crashed with the car rolling multiple times. Jaiswal walked away unhurt. Rahil Noorani commented, “Today happens to be my birthday and this is the best gift I could have given to myself. It was a very emotional moment for me. Yatin Magu has been offered a fully sponsored seat for the next season of Volkswagen Polo R Cup. Race 2 of this round started with Angad Singh Matharoo on pole alongside New Delhi youngster Lee Keshav Gupta. Both front row drivers got overtaken at the start, allowing third placed driver Gaurav Mehta to jump into the lead as they headed into the first corner. Lee slotted into second place with fast starting Jeffrey Kruger up to second place at the end of lap 1. Jeffrey made his move on Lee on lap 2 and moved in to second place and looking to challenge Gaurav. However the lap was red-flagged on lap 4 when Samarth Jaiswal’s Race Polo made contact on the rear left and flipped multiple times at the penultimate corner.

UALA LUMPUR: Savouring his fifth Asian Tour victory at the Indonesia Open, Indian golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar today moved up to fourth in the latest Order of Merit. Bhullar’s earnings have gone up to USD 462,378 this season after he clinched his first title of the year yesterday. With the top four Asian players at the end of the 2013 season qualifying for Team Asia to face Europe in the Ryder Cup-styled EurAsia Cup at Glenmarie Golf and Country Club in Malaysia, the talented Bhullar is poised to make the Asian team on his own merit. Current number one Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand, who leads the rankings with USD 1.1 million, is almost assured of securing a place in Team Asia while third-ranked Siddikur Rahman of Bangladesh (USD 486,667) and fifth ranked Anirban Lahiri of India (USD 407,801) currently occupy the top-four Asian slots. Australian Scott Hend is second on the merit list with USD 569,464. “I would like to qualify for the Asian team in the EurAsia Cup next year. That’s my goal now,” said Bhullar after cruising to a threeshot victory. “Before this, I actually thought I was slightly out of the race but looking at the Order of Merit now, I am definitely in it. It’s the first EurAsia Cup ever and I would love to be a part of the Asian team,” added the Indian, who picked up a winner’s cheque of USD 135,000. Bhullar’s season has been hit-and-miss. After starting the year with a second place finish at the Avantha Masters on home soil, he failed to register another top-10 on the Asian Tour until his Jakarta high where he led from start to finish. Bhullar entered the Indonesia Open after finishing last in 60th place at the ISPS HANDA World Cup of Golf in Royal Melbourne but he kept his chin up despite his recent lack of results. “I wasn’t feeling confident with my game coming to this week actually. I haven’t had much success but I know my game was up there and winning is just a matter of time. “I waited so long for my fifth win and this is my 11th consecutive event already. I’ve been playing so many tournaments and mentally, I was exhausted. Indonesia is one of my favourite places as I won my first title on the Asian Tour here,” said Bhullar. “I finished last at the World Cup and I wanted to prove to myself that I can still play well. I believed in myself. My family was there with me in Melbourne last week and they gave me a lot of encouragement. Mentally, I was ready to win. Golf is a funny game. I just felt I was ready to take on the best players out here. My ball striking is good. I knew the win would come.” he said.

By Kushan Sarkar

Former cricketer and brand ambassador of Apollo Munich Health Insurance Sourav Ganguly during the launch of the company’s new insurance policy in Chennai on Monday.

EW DELHI: Seeking to capitalise on its financial clout, the BCCI is set to demand a greater share of the profit from the revenues generated by the International Cricket Council. According to sources in the BCCI, Srinivasan met the Cricket Australia chairman Walter Edwards in Singapore last week to discuss about the profit-sharing model between the member nations of the ICC. The meeting took place at the same time when the eight IPL-franchises were engaged in a brainstorming two-day workshop in Singapore. “Srinivasan met the CA top boss and discussed India’s concerns about what he thought should be the profit-sharing model. The moot point of discussion was that India generates close to 75 percent of the income for the parent body. Therefore, we are well within our rights to demand a greater share of profit,” a BCCI official in the know of things

Chitra M eked out her first win in the tournament when she defeated Nastya Toumilovitch of Belarus in straight frames to finally shrug off her losing streak. Kambli to be discharged from hospital tomorrow

M

UMBAI: The condition of former cricketer Vinod Kambli, admitted to Lilavati Hospital here on Friday after he apparently suffered a heart attack, improved today and he will be discharged tomorrow. Kambli’s wife Andrea said doctors attending to him has told her that there was “no reason to worry”. “Angiography was done on Vinod earlier in the day. The doctors said everything is fine and that there is no reason to worry. His health is a lot better now. He will be discharged tomorrow,” she said. The 41-year-old was rushed to the suburban hospital by police personnel after he complained of chest pain while driving his car and sought help. He was kept at the ICU of the hospital since then.

told PTI today. ICC’s profit-sharing model is as follows: 75 percent of the profits is equally divided among full member nations like India, Australia, Sri Lanka, England, Pakistan, New Zealand, West Indies, South Africa and Zimbabwe while the remaining 25 percent is distributed among the associate members. It is learnt that members of BCCI’s affiliated units are unanimous in their stand with the president on this issue. “Srinivasan is not demanding a greater share for himself. The bulk of our earnings from the ICC will then be pooled back into development of cricket. If earnings increase, the BCCI state units will stand to gain more as annual grant,” the official added. In fact, at the ICC’s Financial and Commercial Affairs Committee meeting, the revenue-sharing model will come up for discussion and BCCI is likely to get more than equal share of the profit generated when the new commercial model is

put in place for the five years between 2015-2020. But for that the BCCI will need to wait till the end of the 2015 ICC World Cup in Australia and New Zealand when the existing commercial contracts expire. Meanwhile, it has been decided that all IPL franchises will pay their players (including foreign players) in Rupee (INR) instead of USD which has been the norm during the six previous editions. The cap for ‘Player Retention’ is likely to increase from four to five while the highest amount for retaining a player would be around Rs 12 crore. A concept called “right to match” is also going to be introduced during this year’s auction where an existing franchise can veto the sale of a player currently in their squad. The franchises will be given a specific number of cards known as ‘Joker Cards’ which will be used to veto the sale of a player to other franchise provided the old franchise has enough money after retention.
