n what is seen as a major U-turn, after first rejecting the judicial commission’s report on the Adarsh Society scam, the state government, yesterday, partially accepted the commission’s recommendations. However, the state has given a clean chit to politicians indicted in the report for ‘showing patronage.’ Speaking to reporters after the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan stated, “Though the report accuses four former CMs - Ashok Chavan, late Vilasrao Deshmukh, Sushilkumar Shinde and Shivajirao Nilangekar Patil, of political patronage to the project, no criminality can be established against them and hence no action is required.” When asked about action against Ashok Chavan, the CM said, “The CBI was already probing allegations of quid pro quo against him.” Similarly, NCP Ministers Sunil Tatkare and Rajesh Tope were also absolved. Significantly, as expected, the 12 officials, retired and those in service, will face action for breach of service conduct rules. A departmental inquiry will be initiated against them. Chavan also made it clear that legal action will be initiated against 25 ineligible members of the housing society. The cabinet has also decided to initiate cancellation of flat allocations done in 22 benami transactions. The CBI has already launched action against them under the provisions of Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Continued on pg 6 «

CITY OPINIONS

With no untoward incident reported in the New Year, are women now safe in 2014? Rachna Kuradia Social Media Executive Yes, I feel much safe now because I was very much happy with the security of the police officials. Tejashvi Dalvi Chef The Mumbai police and the Traffic department have done a remarkable job and I can now say that I live in a secured city. Snehal Shinde Choreographer No I do not feel so as the police officials took a stringent action only after they saw some major crimes happening against women. Ritika Mishra Student The security of women in society has always been a matter of grave concern and the police officials have proved themselves by taking care of people at the beginning of this year. Meenakshi Sharma PR student Yes, I feel women will be safer now, as the main reason for violence against women is the mentality which deems women as inferior to men and limits their importance, which seems changed from this Readers wishing to participate in ‘Opinions’ may send us their name, day-time telephone number with a passport-size photograph to letters@afternoondc.in Your Subject line must be: opinion

fter two long years of discussions, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) moved closer to its plan regarding providing free sanitary napkins to adolescent girl-students studying in municipal schools across the city. There is no confirmation as to when the scheme will start, but sources stated that it should begun by the end of January. The BMC had made huge budget provisions for the betterment of women under the Gender Budget. According to sources, a very small portion of the budget has been utilised in the last two years. he Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to provide free sanitary napkins to ensure menstrual hygiene among adolescent girls studying in municipal schools. While the BMC will not be the first civic body to take such a step, despite being the richest in the country, it is a much needed

However, it was kept aside saying it is a purely personal issue of students and their family members, thus negating the statistical fact that school girls lose an average of four days a month due to menstruation, putting

HC denies ISKCON permission to host function at Shivaji Park

T

wo months after the Bombay High Court refused to allow the Congress Party to celebrate its 128th Foundation Day at the Shivaji Park ground on December 28, saying there had been gross violations of noise pollution control rules, and damage to the playground in the past, the court on Thursday refused to grant permission to the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) to hold their annual Jagannath Rath Yatra at Shivaji Park. It may be recalled that the High Court had passed orders

in 2010 declaring Shivaji Park a silence zone, on a PIL filed by WeCom Trust, an NGO alleging noise pollution in Shivaji Park. In view of these orders, any one planning to hold a function at Shivaji Park has to obtain permission from the High Court. Accordingly, the Bombay High Court was hearing an application filed by an Iskcon member seeking direction to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to permit them to hold the yatra on January 4 at Shivaji Park in Central Mumbai. While arguing for the application, the counsel for Iskcon told the court that

over one lakh people are likely to attend the yatra and that even last year, the high court had granted them permission. After hearing the application, Justice Gautam Patel of the Bombay High Court refused to accept the contentions of the petitioner’s counsel and observed, “Holding that the city’s open public spaces should be allowed to be used only for their designated purpose, the Shivaji Park area is widely used by sportspersons and children for sports and recreation. Allowing the function would mean rendering it inaccessible not only for the day in

question, but also for some days before and after. The city’s public open spaces such as Shivaji Park should be allowed to be used only for their designated purposes, and the exceptions, if any, should be few. Other functions held in the park like Republic Day and Maharashtra Day are both secular and state-organised functions. The Court must always test where the greater public interest lies. In the case of the Shivaji Park ground, I find it difficult to accept the proposition that the public interest lies with groups such as the petitioners.”

he 4,000 mass bunking resident doctors from across the state, who are protesting the recent assault on a junior doctor by policemen at Solapur Medical College, are demanding the implementation of the Doctors’ Protection Act in this case. “The Doctors’ Protection Act has been in existence since 2010, but has never been implemented. Nobody even knows about it. The accused policemen in the Solapur case have been suspended, but we don’t know under what sections

and what charges have been pressed on them. They are charged under bailable offences, which is not right. When booked under the Doctors’ Protection Act, the offence is non-bailable and the punitive action is a fine of Rs. 50,000 and imprisonment for three years. This is what we want. A simple suspension that will get the policemen back on duty in a few days or months serves no purpose,” said Dr. Harshal Panshewdikar, General Secretary, Central Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD). Speaking about why implementation of this Act is im-

Belated attempt by T Congress to clean up corruption taint T

HE Congress high command seems to have finally become aware of the fact that it has to take some firm action with regard to the continuing corrupt practices of its party members. The rout in six state assembly elections – and it has been the worst in Delhi where the party got just eight seats – must have shattered the morale of the Congress party leaders. The corruption taint is the main cause of the defeat. For a long time, it looks like the Congress has been living in an ivory tower, totally oblivious of the reality on the ground. There have been scam after scam, but apart from declaring that action would be taken, nothing else was done. The prime minister explained away the scams by stating that he had to keep silent thanks to coalition compulsions. And there was that what looked like corrupt land deals by party president Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law – Robert Vadra. He got a clean chit, but the damage had been done: people said there will not be smoke without fire. It looks like finally the party has realised it has to urgently take some damage control measures. The Adarsh housing scam investigation has been going on for a long while and finally when a report was submitted, the state government repealed it. There was a strong reaction against the response of the state government, but the Congress did nothing. However, when the protests grew louder, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi said that the Maharashtra government should reconsider its decision. This order by Rahul Gandhi shows a growing awareness on the part of the Congress high command of the attempt to clean the image of the party. Rahul could have passed the order for the reconsideration of the report soon after it was presented. It was only after huge public outcry that he said a reconsideration of the Adarsh decision was necessary. It is also to be seen what Rahul Gandhi's response will be with regard to the demand for the ouster of the chief minister who is alleged to be involved in several corrupt transactions. It is, however, a bit too late: The corruption taint which the Congress has acquired during the last ten years cannot be wiped out easily. Rahul faces an uphill task in this regard.

HE passing away of Nelson Mandela received the highest notice possible in the Indian media with The Telegraph (Dec. 7) beating everyone at the job with a full-page pictorial coverage under the title ‘Mahatma of Our Times’ and an additional four pages covering the life and times of its icon, which must be a record of some kind. Mandela’s comparison with the Mahatma was indeed apt. As The Indian Express (Dec. 7) said, “Like Mahatma Gandhi before him, the anti-apartheid icon knew that the brutality of the white colonialist was not their ‘real’ nature. Mandela, noted the Express, was ever ready to sacrifice his life “for a cause which made him stand out like a giant among his contemporaries and which will always make him shine like a beacon for future generations. It was because of Gandhi,” said the paper, “and Mandela that the 20th century will be remembered as it produced two of the greatest personalities of our times.”

Two greatest achievements DNA (Dec. 7) said Mandela’s “two greatest achievements were to see justice as a means to achieving lasting peace, not extracting a price for past sins and to renounce power when it would have been easy for him to choose otherwise.” The paper agreed that Mandela was no saint and made his mistakes “both personal and political”. It also conceded that he could be autocratic at times but it went on to say that “it is human greatness that runs deeper than the fallibility attributed to the bloodless figures history transfigures great men into.” The Hindu (Dec. 7) said that “the world has lost one of the greatest figures of the 20th century” leaving “the country’s moral compass in the silence of his twilight.” The paper took note of the fact that he had appointed a Truth and Reconciliation Commission, saving the nation “from a descent into bloodshed”. In conclusion it said that “by leading his country out of the horrors of racial segregation” he has “won his place in history” and “his successors must not seek their own.” Hindustan Times (Dec. 7) said Mandela is “a man who belongs to the ages.” It noted that Mandela lived his life, never blaming others for his misfortunes” and “never sought revenge”. Mandela, the paper said, also lived by the principle “that bitterness and hate can achieve no lasting good” saying that “it was

not for nothing that he was called the Gandhi of South Africa”. The paper said “even those bitterly opposed to his politics could not but have respect and admiration for his towering intellect and impeccable integrity (since) he did not use his personal tragedies to score political points”. The paper added: “His passing has created a cataclysmic upheaval of sorrow around the world”. Deccan Herald (Dec. 7) pointed out that

A sacred warrior MEDIAWATCH M.V. Kamath Mandela’s passing is being mourned not just in South Africa whose people be freed from oppressive white rule, but worldwide. Pointing out that during his 27 years in jail Mandela had attained renowned for his uncompromising commitment to fighting injustice, the paper said that was “testimony to the immense love, admiration, respect and inspiration he evoked across continents.” Claiming that Mandela never hesitated to speak Truth to Power, the paper noted that “he was uncompromising his anguish, even anger, over injustice.” It added: “It will not be easy for the post-Mandela world to come to terms with his death. His moral authority will be missed.” The Asian Age (Dec. 7) said that the world has again lost a Mahatma. It said: “The towering South African leader and iconic world statesman will be mourned deeply across all continents,” adding that Mandela “was a man of courage, of passion, of struggle and indomitable spirit harbouring no ill-will against those who hurt him.” Mandela, said the paper “set a memorable example” by declining to serve beyond a single five-year term” and his great success “lay in creating a government of national unity.” The great leader, said the paper, “had about him a touch of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.” It added: The

Harmony, the source of manifestation H

ARMONY is the source of manifestation, the cause of its existence, and the medium between God and man. The peace for which every soul strives, and which is the true nature of God and the utmost goal of man, is but the outcome of harmony; this shows that all life’s attainments without a sense of harmony are but vain. It is the attainment of harmony which is called heaven, and it is the lack of it which is termed hell. The master of it alone understands life, and he who lacks it is foolish in spite of all other knowledge that he may have acquired. The Sufi gives great importance to the attainment of harmony, believing that light is for angels and darkness for the devil, but that harmony is necessary for a human being in order to keep a balance in life. There are three aspects of harmony: eternal, universal, and individual. Eternal harmony is the harmony of consciousness. As it is in itself eternal, all things

legacy of South Africa’s great sons binds his country to India in no small measure”. The Economic Times (Dec. 7) said it is a mark of Nelson Mandela’s stature that his death is “genuinely mourned almost as a personal loss” and that years after the struggle to end apartheid he still symbolises the struggle against discrimination. He was, the paper said, “simply one of the greatest leaders in world history”. The Times of India (Dec. 7) asked the world to “walk in Madiba’s footsteps”. In a long and detailed editorial, the paper said, “Mandela’s struggle was waged against a harsher environment than Gandhi battled” and once he also strayed off from the path of non-violence.

He is less conscious of the former than of the latter, and by facing towards one direction he loses sight of the other. The Infinite, being the essential spirit of all, finally attracts all to itself. The Sufi gives the greatest importance to harmony with the Infinite, which he realizes by resignation to the will of God, the Beloved. The existence of land and water, the attraction between the heavens and the earth, all demonstrate the universal harmony. The at-

The paper noted that “Mandela’s covenant will not be fulfilled easily or swiftly and “racism and poverty will not be vanquished in a generation of two.” The paper said that “for leaders of today and tomorrow the lesson is to be passionate and courageous” and it is his legacy that South Africa can today take the pride in regular elections in which each person’s vote counts equally, rule of law is sovereign and the middle class is expanding.” The Times of India incidentally also published in the very editorial column an article by Rajit Bhatin, a former High Commissioner to South Africa and currently Director General of the Indian Council of World Affairs. Bhatia reminded his readers that there was a time when, “at a particular stage in history” Mandela had concluded that non-violent means would not work against the brutal apartheid regime and consequently had become the architect and leader of ANC’s military wing. Only towards the end of the struggle did Mandela mould his party’s decision in the direction of peace, to turn South Africa “into a rainbow nation”. Bhatia heard Mandela call Gandhi “a sacred warrior” stressing that in a world of strife, “Gandhi’s message of peace and non-violence might hold the key to human survival”. According to Bhatia, Mandela’s “journey on this earth has just ended but his story as an inspiration to millions shall last.” As tributes go, one suspects that no other country would have paid so much to one single man, as has India. To India he was almost a national hero. traction of the sun and moon to each other, the cosmic order of the stars and the planets, all connected and related with each other, moving and working under a certain law; the regular rotation of the seasons, the night following the day, and the day in its turn giving place to the night; the dependence of one being on another; the distinctiveness, attraction and assimilation of the five elements, all prove the universal harmony. The male and female, beast and bird, vegetable and rock, and all classes of things and beings are linked together and attracted to each other with a chord of harmony. If one being or thing, however apparently useless, were missing in this universe of endless variety, it would be as it were a note missing in a song. As Sa’di says, ‘Every being is born for a certain purpose, and the light of that purpose is kindled within his soul.’ All famines, plagues, and disasters such as storms, floods, volcanic eruptions, wars and revolutions, however bad they may appear to man, are in reality for the adjusting of this universal harmony. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

THIS refers to your edit-piece 'Promises kept in 48 hours' (January 2) in which you have rightly pointed out, “Without the assistance of the Centre, AAP can do precious little in Delhi”, which is the hard truth and the sooner the new party realises this, the better it will be. Kejriwal has been extremely lucky to have become the chief minister by default mostly due to the Congress party's reluctance to allow the BJP to have one more state government as is abundantly clear from its cock-and-bull story to justify its support to its annihilator, the AAP, that it has done so in the interest of the Delhites who have ironically reduced its tally of seats from 40 to just eight this time. Therefore, the AAP will do well to eschew all arrogance, give credit to the Congress for its support and chalk out worthwhile programmes for the people - populism alone cannot keep it going forever. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane

AS per my knowledge, AAP’s chief Arvind Kejriwal is a former IAS officer, obviously with thorough knowledge of all government and semi-government employees’ ways and means of corrupt income. He is Mr. Clean with equally clean and uncorrupt supporters in thousands, nay, lakhs or many more. I was also asked to pay them a fine of Rs.300 and my tempo driver a fine of Rs.200. The woman cop also threatened my tempo driver that he would not get his driving license back unless he stands as witness in the court telling the judge that I spoke rudely to them, when I would like authorities to take a strong action against these cops. I strongly feel that the termination of the contract is overall criticism of corruption in the deal and the breach of pre-contract integrity pact as pointed out by the attorney general of India in his report. Since the cancellation of the deal has come after a year, the government must investigate the matter through CBI to find out the real truth and the culprit in the deal in which taxpayers’ money has been pocketed by selfish and greedy offi-

The Ghats, Coastal Plains and Islands Introduction: The coastal provinces are traditionally considered as the regions of strategic importance. They are the natural frontiers of any nation. Out of the top four megacities of India, three are located in the coastal zone. It is a region of high population density. 1. Rainfall influences the climate of the Western Ghats and the Coastal Plains. Ans.: 1) The Western Ghats run parallel to the West coast and act as a barrier for the South West monsoon winds and causes heavy rainfall in the region during the monsoon. 2) The rainfall increases from the Coastal region towards the Ghats where it reaches around 4000mm. the mean annual rainfall at Agumbe in Karnataka is 7640 mm and it is the rainiest location in India outside the North-East region. 3) The rainfall decreases towards North Gujarat at Kachchh as there is no mountain barrier. 4) The climate of coastal plains of Malabar and Konkan is hot and humid during the monsoon season and hot and dry in the rest of the year. 5) In the Ghats region, the climate is humid but not as hot as the plains. 6) In the North Gujarat plain the climate is mostly dry and extreme because of low rainfall. 2. The Western Coast does not have vast extending plain lands. Ans.: I. Barring the Gujarat Coast, the Western Coast is a narrow strip of land between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats. It does not have any vast plain. II. The Konkan Coast is full of spurs extending from the Ghats right up to the coast line. It is a rocky coast, having no vast plain. III. The Malabar is characterised by the lagoons and backwaters locally known as ‘Kayals’. It too does not have vast plain. IV. The Gujarat coast is relatively broader, but it too, has small and narrow coastal plains. 3.

Plantation agriculture is mainly confined to the Southern parts of the Western Ghats.

Ans.: 1) The Plantation agriculture requires vat forms and a long rainy season to raise cash crops like tea, coffee, rubber, coconut etc. 2) The Northern part of the Western Ghats is narrow valley and moderate slopes, where cultivation of only subsistence food crops like rice is possible. 3) But the Southern parts of the Western Ghats have a longer rainy season and moderately sloping hill region, which are well suited for plantation crops like tea, coffee, rubber etc. Hence reason. 1. Short Notes: 1) Natural Vegetation in the Western Ghats. I. In the Western Ghats high rainfall, as well as hot and humid climate leads to deep weathering of rocks. This has favoured luxuriant growth of natural vegetation in the Western Ghat section. II. A portion of South Sahyadri has tropical rain forests. III. In the South, there are typical ‘shola’ forests having a variety of species. IV. Eucalyptus and teak trees are seen in the plantation forests. V. In the Central Ghats, there are dense forests in some parts. 2. Industries in the Andaman and Nicobar groups of islands. Ans. I. The Andaman-Nicobar has some small scale, village and handicraft units. Besides, it has shells and woodbased handicraft units.

Its small scale industries produce polythene bags, paints and varnishes, shell craft etc.

3. Agriculture in the Eastern Coastal plains. Ans.: I. The Eastern Coastal Plains are some of the most fertile lands of our country. II. They have very fertile delta regions of the rivers Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri. III. Here, rice is cultivated with three cycles in a year, particularly in the Kaveri Delta area. IV. All the delta regions and the adjoining plains between Coast and the Ghats have dominance of rice cultivation. V. Good rainfall and high temperature is quite suitable for the crop of rice, jute as well as tropical fruits and vegetables 3.1

How do t he Coastal Islands along West Coast and East Coast differ from one another?

Ans. 1) The West coastal islands are mostly rocky and many of them are in the form of submerged waver-cut platforms. 2) These islands along the East Coast are mostly depositional ones formed by the deposition of sand or silt. 3) The islands in the Gulf of Kuchchh are mostly in the form of fringing coral reefs. 4) Along the Konkan and Malabar Coasts, there are quite a few tiny islands. 5) There are large numbers of depositional islands along the Bay of Bengal, particularly along the coast of West Bengal. 6) As compared to the tiny and rocky islands along the Western Coat, the Eastern Coastal depositional islands of West Bengal are larger. 7) There are very few such noticeable changes in the islands of the Western Coast. 2.

What are the environmental problems of the Western Ghats and the West Coastal Region?

Ans.: 1) The Western Ghats have water resources owing to high rainfall. 2) The rugged topography, deep valleys and high relief provide good sites for dam construction either for irrigation, hydroelectricity or urban water supply. They have reserves of mineral wealth. They have rich biodiversity. Hence they have tremendous ecological value. 3) The region with such a wealth of natural resources has a number of environmental problems. It has to protect its forest cover to maintain its bio-diversity. 4) In the coastal regions of high population density, the level of human intervention in the fragile coastal ecosystems goes on increasing. It is likely to lead to environmental problems.

Compare to the Bay of Bengal islands the Arabian Sea islands receive less rainfall.

Ans.: I. The Lakshadweep, Maldives and Chagas group of islands in the Arabian Sea are flat islands having no hills to cause topographical rain. II. Their forest cover is not so dense as that of AndamanNicobar Islands. III. The Arabian Sea islands receive rain mostly from South West monsoons, whereas the Bay of Bengal branch islands receive rainfall from both the South West and North East monsoons. IV. The monsoon rains start in this are almost from May and continue till the end of December. It receives rainfall from South West as well as North East monsoon, hence reason. 4.

What are the factors that make the Western Ghats and theWestern Coast the favoured destination of tourists?

Ans.: I. The factors like hill stations, national parks, sanctuaries beautiful beaches, famous pilgrimage and historical places and forts etc. make the Western Ghats and the Western Coast the favoured destination of tourists. II. The Ghats have a number of hill stations like Saputara in Gujarat, Mahabaleshwar in Maharashtra, Kodaikannal in Tamil Nadu and Munnar in Kerala. III. Besides these hill stations, several national parks, wild life sanctuaries also attract many tourists. IV. The beautiful beaches like Srivardhan and Guhagar in Maharashtra, Kolwa and Kalangut beach in Goa, Karwar beach in Karnataka and Kovalam beach in Kerala are quite famous tourist destinations. V. The places of pilgrimage as well as places of historical importance like forts also attract tourists. 4. >> (Clockwise) Community tables have become a big hit while eating with strangers is still picking up. Pooja Dhingra can be credited for, what we might very well term, the Patisserie revolution

What’s Cooking?

From bite-sized treats to elbowing strangers at the dinner table, Mumbai has seen a number of food trends get big this year. Rhea Dhanbhoora & Priyanka Singh tell you more

I

f a dinner out for you includes trying some exotic meat or biting into the perfect macaron for dessert, you’ve succumbed to the latest food trends swarming the city. Whether you’ve become a health conscious diner, want to head over to an exhibition in the middle of your meal or prefer a small plate to a big meal — you’ve been following the trends without even realising it. We tell you about the food trends that took the rounds last year and ask chefs and restaurant owners what we can look forward to in 2014.

Molecular gastronoMy Pioneered by world-renowned chefs Ferran Adria and Heston Blumenthal, the techniques used in molecular gastronomy are more laboratory tactics than cooking styles.

And this trend seems to have taken Mumbai by storm, with several bars and restaurants across the city adding dishes created using scientific methods such as gelification, spherification, deep freezing and effervescence to their menus. You can see a sample of these in food and drinks at city restaurants such as Olive, Eau Bar at the Oberoi, Ibar in Bandra, Masala Library in BKC, Wink at Vivanta by Taj at Cuffe Parade and even at the newly opened Juhu bar, Copa.

Fusion Food While many of us might love Indian food, most Indian specialty restaurants have the same, boring fare to offer. Now imagine Galouti kebab infused with French foie gras… that’s the kind of jaw dropping fusion food combinations

that we saw unwrapping around the city. For example, at Masala Library, they serve Pesto Kebabs with Parmesan Papad, Quinoa Biryani, Rissoto Khichdi and Poha Paella which is Spanish Valencian rice dish with calamari, clams and sea food. Auriga offers mint-chocolate samosas, which is Chef Limaye’s version of molten lava. Even Nom Nom serves Patra Ni Machi with a South East Asian twist. >> Restaurants which double as galleries such as the Pali Village Café is currently a niche trend

TeChnoLogy & Food While this trend was seen emerging way back in 2011, 2013 was the year it really took off. Tablets were given to diners to browse through the menu and even give their feedback. Some of the restaurants that picked this trend up were Di Bella Café in Versova, Koh at Marine Drive, Escobar, Royal China and Two One Two Bar & Grill. Rajdhani, while it doesn’t offer their menu via a tablet, does give out one to get the customer’s feedback after the meal.

CommuniTy TaBLeS Rubbing elbows with strangers may not be your idea of the perfect meal, but for those on the community table bandwagon, sharing table space with someone you don’t know isn’t such a bad idea. The Table at Lower Parel and all LPQ outlets across the city have such communal tables. The trend has become a hot one in the city and while it’s new here, people used to eat at such tables way back in the 16 and 1700s. So, the latest food trend in the city is going back to archaic eating! While eating at a communal table, remember to eat neatly and be careful who you strike up a conversation with.

PaTiSSeRieS delectable, bite-sized treats for the guilty indulgers. From menus that list out the calorie count so that you know what you’re eating, to those that promise less oil, healthy eating has become a big trend with people around the city. From I Feel Healthy Today in Khar (W) to Gostana in Bandra (W) that serves healthy burgers, without fries — healthy eating is one of the latest food trends to sweep the city. Even Suzette at Nariman Point and Bandra serves healthy salads and crépes that you can make yourself and Kala Ghoda Café at Fort serves organic herbal teas and juices for the health conscious. Unlike most other trends, we think it’s a really good idea and hope it continues well into 2014.

Looking ahead Wondering what trends 2014 is going to keep and which ones it’s going to chuck out? Take a look at what some restaurant owners are telling us… “Food trends that can do wonders this year is technology. From reservations to ordering and paying for food — everything is going online. Also, special conditions within reservations will take centre stage — ordering flowers to place on the table before guests come in. Personally I think that molecular gastronomy will make a quiet exit, since it’s not the way food is meant to be eaten.” — amrish arora, owner of Flamboyante

eateries to Tapas at Spanish restaurants across the city, less is definitely more here. Several restaurants even serve pizza by the slice. Why do we love it? You get to sample a lot more without your tummy full to bursting and your wallet empty. Even novelty items such as starters served as shots (Masala Library in BKC has a delectable range) are big on trend.

Have you been to Suzette in Bandra lately? If yes then you must have noticed small jars with flags that say ‘Hi.’ If you are interested in sharing your table with a stranger, all you have to do is upturn the flag which would suggest that you are open to sharing your table with a stranger. This unique concept is the brainchild of a unique social enterprise company called Treetins helmed by four partners — Mohit Narwal, Prince Jacob Thomas, Chandy Thomas and Aditya Dhull, who are adamant on ‘making strangers social’ through their various, innovative efforts. Currently, you can find these Treetin jars at Woodside Inn, The Elbo Room, The Local, The Pantry, Café Zoe, Alps, Kyani Bakeri, Rude exoTiC Food Lounge, Indigo Deli, Suzette, D’Bell, The Little Door and No, this isn’t a play on the Priyanka Chopra song that we Hard Rock Café. From mezze platters at Greek However, we can foresee this becoming a trend soon.

“This year, more consumers will be influenced by the health bug, so restaurants may have to consider healthier food trends and menus that educate customers about nutritional values of what they’re eating. Food workshops and classes are going to become bigger and trendier. The concept of novella cuisine is also booming, where customers are tired of regular fare and are more willing to experiment, whether with different cuisines or fusion foods. And of course, the concept of a patisserie is fast becoming an uptown trend, with the baking industry growing further this year.” — Ravi Sharma, owner of Saffron Bay “This year, traditional Indian food will be back

with vengeance. Cuisines such as Kashmiri, Hyderabadi and Awadhi will be tantalizing people with its rich texture and spicy flavours.” — Chef Bhuvanesh kalburgi of Ramada-Powai “Speaking about Oriental cuisine, I would say pre-plated is a new concept where instead of bowls, Oriental dishes are served on plates with garnishing and different sauces. This trend will focus on presenting food aesthetically and will create space for individual dishes for every person. Also, bitesized miniature replicas of dishes will create waves in Indian food culture as people are more conscious of health factors. For example, shots of soup instead of one whole

bowl will give people the option of enjoying soup but, will not make one extremely full.” — Chef Rohan koppikar of Skky at Ramada-Powai “2013 was a fascinating year in the world of food. Arguably, the biggest food item of the year was the Cronut. A few things I believe could be food trends this year are a trend where young chefs open restaurants to seat 30 or less people to express their own culinary capabilities. I think Mediterranean food is going to become a trend and small plates are here to stay. I also see more gluten-free options becoming common and creative on menus.” — Viveck Shah, owner of The White glove gourmet

Skin Deep?

P

romoted as a luxury, non-surgical facelift and skin enhancer, the CACI treatment, already very popular in the west, has arrived at Saks Salon. The treatment is supposed to lift skin, revitalise sagging facial muscles, reduce scars and potential acne and treat under eye discolouration. Saks is already creating a loyal clientele with its modern, scientific, clinical approach to hair and beauty. This precise look and attitude, offset by the warmth of the staff is a potent combination. For me, almost 40, a busy mother who spends a lot of time on her feet, or in the outdoors and with a woefully inadequate skincare routine, I am a prime target for the CACI treatment. The fine lines have started to appear, I suffer from the occasional outbreak of adult acne and usually have panda-eyes from insufficient rest. At the salon, you are first directed to a private suite and provided with a spa-tunic. A trained CACI technician then analyses your skin visually, asking questions to help with diagnosis. After a preliminary cleansing, the technician then

begins the actual work. There is the gentle micro-dermabrasion that deals with scarring. Then the almost imperceptible buzz of the micro-currents that help your facial muscles ‘remember’ while also increasing circulation. 60 minutes into a very relaxing treatment, the technician decided not to use the hydrating mask on me, because it may just exacerbate the acne. The instant effect seemed refreshing but not dramatic; my dark circles were less pronounced, my skin felt smoother, a little firmer and some of the fine lines seemed to have disappeared. However, this was shortlived, because as the day progressed I found it hard to really see any marked difference in my skin. The technician did say that a full CACI treatment is actually a the cumulative outcome of a series of 10 sittings but at `7,000 on average, I’m not sure the cost justifies the results. where 9, Silver Pearl, Ground Floor, Waterfield Road, Bandra (W) ContaCt 26414246

he very first word that entered my mind when I stepped into FCML at Mahalaxmi was ‘beautiful.’ And indeed, the store is extremely welldesigned. They have made judicious use of the large area at their disposal, resulting in a comfortable and pleasing store design that will make shopping here a very pleasant experience. FCML is all about bathroom furnishings and their lower level (located on the third floor) is testament to that. You’ll find wash basins, mirrors, showers, taps and other accessories. Here you will also find bathroom tiles. One of the best parts about this section was that you won’t have to browse through a catalogue — they have attached a number of tiles on sliding panes which makes looking through them an easy task. Wood and metal is quite predominant among their bathroom furnishings. They do have the standard chrome designs, but for once, a bath store was not overloaded with shiny silver in every direction. Their wash basins stand out from the rest of their products. From funky faucets to unique metal finishes, they have a good variety. I particularly liked the blingy gold metal finish wash basin. Another one that caught my attention was a white basin which had a black matte finish tap — very classy. Apart from standalone basins, they also have ones which come with in-built mirror units. These units can range from a simple set of drawers to proper cabinets. The diversity of their range of products ensures that even those who aren’t blessed with a big bath space will find something suitable for their bathrooms here — something high end stores often overlook. Their collection of bathroom tiles is also large, from run-off-the-mill textures and lines to funky ones with multi-coloured paint lines in a seemingly random order,

the collection is adorable and it is hard to imagine that you won’t find anything that you’ll like. FCML’s upper level is all about kitchen and flooring. The latter section actually has the floor tiles stuck on to the store’s floor to help you visualise their collection. Their kitchen consoles wowed me over too. Most of their designs have classy wood and metallic finishes. However, the one that I liked the most was the marble top counter

with wood and steel cabinets and water faucets. Overall, FCML managed to impress me on most counts. So, if you’re doing up your home, stop by to shop or be inspired. where S-10, Shree Luxmi Woolen Mills, Shakti Mills Lane, Off. Dr. E Moses Road, Mahalaxmi (W) ContaCt www.fcmlindia.com

Hello D’Bell D’Bell is the new café and lounge that has opened in Indiabulls Centre. Priyanka Singh checks it out

W

hile we had visited D’Bell’s lounge section before (as the venue has hosted gigs of many talented Indian indie bands in the past few months), we never really paid attention to the adjacent café of the same name. A lot of city eateries call themselves a bar and café, which is quite absurd, because the vibe of one is a complete opposite of the other. Not trying to awkwardly amalgamate the two, D’Bell sets the demarcation straight with two sections — café and lounge — divided by an impressive soundproof wall. The dimly lit lounge may have a metal night going on, but the patron sitting with a book in the warm and roomy, brightly lit café, will not hear a sound. Apart from the ambience and drinks, the food menu of both the sections differ, with the lounge quite obviously offering a lot of finger food. Before we proceed to elaborate on our culinary trip at this café, we must mention two remarkable highlights of D’Bell — the attentive and friendly, but not bordering on imposing, staff and a novel concept called Treetins. Treetins is a social enterprise company that gets restaurants to participate in a drive where customers share their tables with strangers. D’Bell has agreed to be a part of this and you’ll see a jar placed

AsiAn HeAven Sun N Sand has a new Asian restaurant — Haochi and it is amazing to say the least! Shirley Mistry tells you more

A

s someone who has grown up loving Chinese food (Indian and authentic), Haochi, with its promise of authentic Asian food seemed absolutely exciting. As soon as you walk into the restaurant, opulent and classy interiors greet you. In tones of maroon and warm yellow light, the restaurant is tastefully done up. One wall of the dining area is taken up by the open kitchen which only adds to the dining experience that follows. First up was the Smoky Tamarind Margarita (`500) and the Pineapple & Cardamom Martini (`500). They have an exhausting selection of beverages, including a fabulous tea section. However, our drinks were a little lacklustre. The flavours didn’t pack a punch and made our cocktails just about average. We started our meal with the Lobster & Shrimp Dumpling (`700) and the Crystal Chicken Dumpling (`350). Both were exceptionally good. The lobster and shrimp dumpling was spiced so mildly that you could actually taste the seafood within. The chicken variant has the word ‘crystal’ in its name because you can see the filling through the casing. Again, spiced minimally, this one had a prominent flavour of garlic and sesame oil. We also tried the Crispy Seaweed (`225), which is actually shreds of Bok Choy crispy fried. With only a dash of salt to flavour, this preparation was surprisingly delicious. Next were the Chicken Gem Wraps (`250), which was a mild chicken preparation filled in lettuce cups. The excessive use of pickled bamboo made this appetiser slightly disappointing. Lastly, we sampled the Haochi Lotus Root (`400), their

signature dish. Lotus root batter fried and tossed in a chilly-garlic spice blend made up this a delicious, albeit very fiery dish. This is definitely not one for those who prefer mellow flavours. For mains, we sampled the Mango Prawns (`800), Haochi Chicken (`675) and the Five Treasure Vegetables (`500) with some Garlic Butter Rice (`400). The prawns were perfectly cooked, but the mango sauce fell flat. It was just sweet and had no other flavour to it. The Haochi Chicken on the other hand was a perfectly spiced gravy preparation with lots of vegetables, including cucumber that added a delightful crunch. The Five Treasure Vegetables were a mix of water chestnuts, baby corn, squash, Chinese mushrooms and bamboo shoots. Wellspiced and with a balance of textures, this makes for a good option for vegetarians. And what is to be said for the Garlic Butter Rice! As the name promises, it was packed with buttery, garlicky goodness, making us very happy diners. Dessert however, stole the show. I chose the Almond Yogurt with Exotic Fruits (`350) whereas my companion picked the Caramel Cinnamon Banana Fritters (`325). The yogurt was velvety smooth, with a subtle crunch coming from a layer of finely chopped almonds. The bananas were crispy, in a rich caramel sauce accompanied by a dollop of cinnamon custard that was to die for and paired exceptionally well with the bananas. If you want a good fine dining experience, Haochi is the place to go to. They have great food with quick and attentive servers to boot. What more could you possibly want?!

>> The interior of D’Bell café (above) is spacious and affable. The Bacon Wrapped Chicken Involtini (inset) had a lovely presentation but too much of tomato sauce with a tiny stirrer like flag that says ‘Hi.’ If you’d like to share your table with people who are waiting to get one, all you have to do is upturn the flag. This would indicate that you are okay with sharing your space with someone else. Moving on to the protagonist of a café — its food — D’Bell has a menu with many Asian and Lebanese dishes. We ordered Nachos (`200), Bacon Wrapped Chicken Involtini (`290), Caesar Salad (`250), Smoked Salmon Salad (`380) and Wild Mushroom Cabbage Rolls (`260). Generous with the cheese, the nachos here are one of the better ones we’ve had in the city. The involtinis (small rolls) had chicken, stuffed with smoked cheese and sundried tomatoes, which was then wrapped in bacon — it was a heavy dish and would have been a hit with us if the chef had not gone overboard with the tomato sauce. The Caesar Salad was crispy and light, although we didn’t get the promised croutons along with it. The Smoked Salmon salad, with its paper thin vegetables and jalapeno dressing, was so delicious that it vanished in barely a few minutes. The Cabbage Rolls which had a mixture of chopped barley, leek and wild mushrooms in them, were quite a task to eat and definitely isn’t a dish worthy of being a part of the ‘Chef Recommends’ section. Drinks deserve a special mention here — we tried their white wine based Sangria (`350) and Creamy Chocolate Martini (`450). Their sangria is a perfect summer drink with fresh pieces of orange, green apple and pineapple dunked in. We wouldn’t be exaggerating to say that it was the best sangria that we’ve had in a long, long time. Similarly, their vodka and chocolate based martini struck the right balance between bitter and sweet. Don’t forget to ask for the desserts of the day, our pick being the Philadelphia Cheesecake. Situated in Indiabulls Centre, with its free wi-fi and a book shelf, I can see D’Bell becoming popular with young employees. However, upping the ante with a few improvements in their food menu will ensure that the popularity continues. Visiting a

mirage T

he pink city may be located in a desert state, but there’s nothing dry about this resort, with a 40ft high waterfall nestling a Buddha in its cove. The Water House resort is far from the main city, which is a hassle if you want to sightsee and are short on time. But honestly, once you’ve entered the sanctity of the place, we doubt you’re going to want to leave. After you’ve picked up your dropped jaw and walked around the Nature Farms property (that houses the popular Tree Houses) and stopped to stare at the rabbits meandering down the path behind you, you can walk up the prettily tiled stairs, past another waterfall toward where the water houses are situated. The nine suites are cottages suspended over the water and each cottage has a small gate, making it even more private, with a patio outside, shielded from the glaring Jaipur sun by an umbrella. It’s the perfect place for an evening cup of tea while you watch the ducks waddle past. We were put up in the Swan cottage overlooking the beautiful falls. The resort may be a nature farm but it’s got every amenity under the sun to help make it a 5-star experience, right from a mini-fridge and big-screen TV to an air conditioner for the hot summer months and a much needed heater for the colder winter, during which we visited. Although the cottages have the cutest outdoor shower, we were confined to the one indoors because the temperature here drops several degrees lower than that of the main city. Our favourite part of the room was the area with the glass floor, through which you can watch fish play peek-a-boo beneath the pebbles on the water bed. Each room comes complete with organic

products from Omved and the resort is swarming with rescued rabbits, wounded birds that they’ve taken under their wing and our favourite — sweet little ducks that will let you follow (only if you’re in line behind them!) for a short stretch before they tire of your presence. We spent the time that we weren’t gazing out at the water or looking for birds and animals on the infinity gazebo deck which overlooked the Syari valley. Lush verdant hues speckle the valley and if you look up at night, it’s a blanket of sparkling stars — we’ve never seen so many clustered together! If you’re the sort who always wants activity, take a bike ride, play tennis or billiards, take a dip in the pool (you’ll need nerves of steel to do that during the winter) or just walk around the property — you’ll find something to exclaim about, take pictures of or experience at every turn. Also, book a massage at the spa, but remember to book early to get a spot. Pop over to the other side of a quaint bridge for a drink at the 400-year-old Peacock bar after-hours — sit outside on white and blue wrought iron chairs and watch wildlife wander past. All three meals are spectacular, but when we heard that dinner would be served on the lawn we were a little skeptical because of the cold. However, they set it up really well with cosy bonfires for each table to cut out the chill and lots of hot soup to warm you up. Vegetarians have great options but non-vegetarians won’t come away disappointed either. Don’t skip the juice and the eggs at breakfast! For a trip away from the hustle and bustle of the city, nestled comfortably in the midst of nature and truly worth the experience, there’s nothing like The Water Resort.

India’s Manufacturing PMI Decelerates In Dec: HSBC

India’s manufacturing sector decelerated marginally in December as a slowdown in domestic order flows led to slower output growth, an HSBC survey said yesterday. The HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) - a measure of factory production - dropped slightly from 51.3 in November to 50.7 in December.

The notification in this regard has been issued by the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC), an official release said yesterday.

Oil Ministry Forms Panel To Codify DiscoveryRecognition Norms

Amid disputes over recognition of oil and gas finds, the Oil Ministry has formed a panel headed by the Director General of Hydrocarbons (DGH) to codify globally recognised industry practices for adoption in India. Though Production Sharing Contracts prescribe the adoption of generally accepted international petroleum practices or standards, there have been disputes between the DGH and operators such as Reliance Industries over tests that should be carried out to confirm discoveries.

Revenue growth bottoms out, but‌

ndia Inc’s revenues (excluding financial services and oil companies) are “projected to increase by a tepid 7-9 % y-o-y, during October-December 2013 (Q3FY14). However, as against the previous quarters, wherein growth was concentrated among a few sectors, from Q3FY14 onwards, several sectors are expected to register a gradual improvement in growth rates. The rise in revenues, though, would not translate to higher profitability. EBITDA margins during the quarter are estimated to remain stable y-oy at 17 %, says CRISIL Research in a just released report.

Mukesh Agarwal, President, CRISIL Research, says, “Revenues, after declining for nine successive quarters, rebounded in the July-September 2013 quarter. However, the growth in revenues was largely on account of export-oriented sectors benefiting from a weak rupee. From the third quarter of 2013-14, though, we expect a gradual recovery in more sectors. Apart from IT, pharmaceuticals and textiles, domestic consumption-linked sectors will see moderate improvement, as rural demand picks up owing to a better monsoon. Also, while growth in investment-linked sectors will remain weak, unlike in the last many quarters, it is not expected to deteriorate

further. A more sustained recovery is expected only in 2014-15, spurred by investments in projects fasttracked by the Cabinet Committee on Investments, and lifting of the mining ban by the government. In Q3FY14, CRISIL Research expects one-third of the 50 sectors (encompassing 605 companies) covered in this analysis, including IT services, pharmaceuticals, tractors, textiles, FMCG, retail and media, to clock double-digit growth. Higher rural income, owing to a good monsoon, will benefit two-wheeler and tractor manufacturers, which, in turn, will support the auto components sector. Volume growth in the FMCG sec-

tor is expected to sustain. Also, steel companies will register higher growth, led by import substitution and rise in exports due to rupee depreciation. Infrastructure linked sectors such as construction, roads and cement have bottomed out as well. Moreover, the pace of revenue decline in the commercial vehicles and capital goods sectors is expected to slow down, owing to a low base. However, improvement in revenue is not expected to lead to higher profitability across all sectors. According to Prasad Koparkar, Senior Director, CRISIL Research, “Margin expansion is not expected until pricing power returns, which we do not expect before financial

Urban Consumer Outlook Improves Is backed by reduced pessimism towards Inflation leading to an uptick in willingness to spend By A Business Reporter

“T

he Indian economy is on the path of revival and the abating pessimism towards borrowing and spending is a sign that bodes well. However, employment continues to be a cause for concern as several sectors, particularly manufacturing, have been reeling under the throes of the economic slowdown. For any major turnaround in spending sentiment, employment outlook needs to improve drastically as compared to what it is today, says Debopam Chaudhuri, VP Research, ZyFin Research He was reacting to the Consumer Outlook Index numbers for the month of December 2013, which reflects current and future spending plans, employment and inflation outlook of urban Indian consumers. The index has registered a score of 40.2, an uptick of 0.4 points compared to the previous month. A score above 50 reflects optimism while below 50 is an indication of pessimism. Released by ZyFin Research, the Consumer Outlook Index is India’s monthly barometer of consumer sentiment. The index is based on a monthly survey of 4000 consumers across 18 cities and reflects consumers’ current and future spending plans, employment and inflation outlook. The latest numbers indicate that, the Index has been trending up for two consecutive months. In De-

cember there was a month on month uptick of 0.4 points and a rise of 1.2 points from an all-time low of 39.0 that was witnessed in October 2013. Zyfin’s Inflation Sentiment Index also rose by 0.3 points from the last month to 24.3. This is the second month in a row that the index has risen after having registered its lowest score of 22.7 in October 2013. A steady improvement in general price sentiment has been instrumental in improving anticipations around inflation during the month, despite the current level continuing to suggest heavy pessimism. Amid a steadily improving borrowing comfort level, the Spending Sentiment Index moved up by 2.0 points to score 32.9 in December. In contrast, after crossing the neutral mark last month, the Employment Sentiment Index again slipped into the pessimistic zone. The index fell by 0.6 points to 49.8 due to growing pessimism around job security. The Present Situation Sentiment Index also remained flat at 40.4 while the Future Expectations Situation Index increased by 0.7 points to reach 40.1 Consumers in Metro cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad are the most optimistic in terms of consumer outlook. Some of these consumers have kept their spending plans on hold until improvement in overall economic conditions.

annual period in terms of proceeds amount since 2011 when volume fell to US$7.1 billion. Initial public offerings (IPO) totaled US$343.3 million, a significant drop of 73.3% in proceeds from the full year 2012 volume (US$1.3 billion), and the lowest annual level since 2001 (US$69.9 million). Citi topped the ranking for India’s equity and equity-linked underwriting in 2013, with related proceeds of US$1.2 billion from 10 deals and accounted for 13.3% of India’s equity capital markets. According to estimates from Thomson Reuters/Freeman Consulting, India’s equity capital raisings generated imputed fees worth US$48.9 million in 2013, a 33.1% decline from the comparative period last year. With estimated fees of US$4.3 million, Citi took the lead for India ECM imputed fee ranking this year, and captured 8.7% market share of the fee pool.

year 2014-15. In the third quarter of 2013-14, margins of sectors such as IT and pharmaceuticals will increase by 80-100 bps due to a weak rupee. Margins of the telecom sector will improve by 70 bps and that of the two-wheeler sector will rise by about 100 bps, led by higher realisations. Margins of the cement, power, airlines and paper sectors, though, are expected to decline because of high input costs. Due to muted EBITDA growth and high interest costs, net profit margins, which declined by about 300 bps in Q2FY14, are expected to remain under pressure in Q3FY14, particularly of sectors such as construction, housing, metals, telecom and capital goods.

We have started with press releases, articles and magazine write ups, the necessary steps to promote a film.

What changes do you find in the TV industry over the years? There are too many shows, too many actors, there is too less time for a show to prove itself, the tolerance level of audience is low nowadays and I feel lucky my show had a long run; maybe I was in the golden time.

I’ve been lucky too, I am an actor by default, I got lucky with acting and was really successful and then I quit acting to concentrate on my acting and then I found myself back to acting after sometime. It’s all about luck, fate and destiny.

Will we see you making a comeback on television? You never know!

Why haven’t you done any reality shows? Because I don’t want to make a fool out of myself in front of people, I have a corporate as well as personal image to save; I would like to maintain my dignity.

urely, you have heard these evergreen chartbusters ‘Mere Saamne Waali Khidki ’ (Padosan), ‘Chingari Koi Bhadke’ (Amar Prem) and ‘Jaane-Jaan’ (‘Sanam Teri Kasam’) composed by the legendary rockstar Rahul Dev Burman, whose 20th death anniversary is being observed tomorrow by his legion of loyal fans. Listen to them again and you will connect with the distinct sound of the ‘reso-reso’ percussion instrument which produces a sharp, scraping (chiyishchikchik) sound in these songs and hundreds of other chartbuster Panchamda (RDB) numbers. In the hilarious ‘Mere Saamnewali’, it is the sound which you hear on-screen when Keshto Mukherjee is shown fiddling with his broom. Now these musical sounds were invariably played on the ‘reso-reso’ with a comb, in almost all the RDB repertoire hit songs by ace percussionistcum-tabla player Amrutrao Katkar - who formed the core team of the iconic sangeetkaar’s ‘sittings’. Jogging into memory lane, Amrutrao (now 79) recalls a wacko anecdote. “As is known, Panchamda had that nagging rebel-streak

for unconventional sounds. During a song recording of the film ‘Darling Darling’, Rahul-da singled me out and asked me to strip off my shirt and sit ‘bare-backed’ in the singer’s cabin. Initially I presumed he was making me a butt of his pranks, as he was impish at times. But when he insisted, I followed his command. Moments later, Panchamda walked in and started slapping and patting my back in a perfect rhythmic pattern. In the very first ‘take’ it was recorded. “Yeh mere taraf se peetth peechhe shabaashi hai”, chuckled the witty Panchamda. The back-slapping was used in this song ‘Raat Gayi Baat Gayi’. “There should be a musicschool or a small memorabilia museum dedicated to genius Panchamda”, signs off Amrutrao.

genius called Kishore Kumar Soha Ali Khan’s undercover cop act AHowrare do you gauge a genius whose talent is immeasurable? What do you call a man

You are doing a comedy film for the first time. The film is a comedy but I haven’t done comedy in the film. I have quite an interesting role in the film. And I get to do lots in the film. What is your role in the film? I play an undercover cop called Shantpriya Phadanavis in the film who is from Bengaluru Police and gets different types of cases to solve and she wears different types of costumes and get-ups in the film. The film has many funny situations and funny dialogues. How difficult was it for you to enact this role? Not much because most of the time I am chasing Carlos, the villain and I have only few scenes with the police supridendent. I didn’t have to prepare much for the role. What made you accept this role? The director of the film Sameer Tewari came to my house with the film offer and I was a bit skeptical since it was his debut film but when I heard Arshad Warsi is going to star in the film along with Javed Jaffrey I was convinced about doing the film. Usually I do girl next door roles or royal family roles, this is a different kind of role for me. What is the story of the film?

Soha Ali Khan has not had a major film recently but her forthcoming film ‘Mr. Joe B. Carvalho’ is one of the eagerly awaited films in the first week of the New Year. Sandeep Hattangadi spoke to Soha about her new film in a candid conversation

Arshad Warsi plays a detective out to track Carlos, an international assassin, played by Javed Jaffrey. Arshad and me were in love for some time but then broke off but when we met after seven years I assume Arshad to be Carlos and he thinks I am a cabaret dancer. There is our love track within the action in the film and I have done lots of action for the film. Did you learn for the action sequences of the film? Yes. I learnt martial arts from Yagnessh Cheetah Shetty who taught me a lot about self defence and how to save the person with whom we are filming the action shot in the film. I learnt boxing too as I was always interested in learning martial arts and boxing. Are there a lot of intelligent detective scenes in the film? Quite to the contrary, everyone from me to Joe is dumb and not too intelligent but we all are chasing Carlos who is not too intelligent too.

T

here has been only one such great in the film industry, the multifaceted Kishore Kumar – a man who lived for his one love – music. The real Kishore Kumar always remained an enigma even to his own family and close friends. Abhas Kumar Ganguly, better known as Kishore Kumar, nurtured dreams of following in the footsteps of his idol K.L. Saigal. He visited his by then famous star brother Ashok Kumar, in Mumbai frequently, in the hope that he would introduce him to K.L. Saigal. But destiny willed otherwise. He was forced into acting and hated every moment of it. ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gadi’ [1958], ‘Jaalzaaz’ [1959], ‘Jhumroo’ [1961], ‘Naughty Boy’ [1962] became successful and that managed to tie down Kishore to a busy acting schedule, so much so that for a song in ‘Sharaarat’, Mohd Rafi actually had to provide playback for him. Kishore’s ambition of becom-

ing a playback singer was no cakewalk. And then came the chance to sing ‘Marne ki duayen kyon mangu‘ for Dev Anand in ‘Ziddi’ [1948]. His first sad song was from the film ‘Kafila’ [1952] “Who meri taraf yoon chale aa rahe hain” penned by Vrajendra Gaur and composed by Husanlal Bhagatram which became a chartbuster. S.D. Burman who was always confident about the po-

tential of Kishore made him the voice of Dev Anand in ‘Guide’, ‘Gambler’, ‘Teen Deviyaan’, ‘Jewel Thief’, etc. Kishore Kumar was unstinting in crediting his popularity to the Burmans – father and son. It was S.D. Burman who made Kishore, the superstar singer of the seventies, when he chose him to sing the super-hit songs of ‘Aradhana’ for Rajesh Khanna. The chart-blazing songs of ‘Aradhana’ made both Rajesh Khanna a superstar and Kishore Kumar the number one singer, overnight. This also marked the begiNning of the end of another popular singer - Mohd Rafi. Another composer who placed great faith in Kishore was S.D. Burman’s son, R.D. Burman. His ability to mimic combined with his voice flexibility and voice quality gave him great speed and power. Lata Mangeshkar once said – Kishore was a ‘Sampoorna Kalakaar’ [A Complete Artist].

here was a lot of good and even more bad in 2013. It was disconcerting how everything boiled down to opening weekend figures. When filmmaking is reduced to just counting money, then creativity goes out of the window. This number crunching has reached absurd heights with 300 crores being bandied about with ease, which means the next blockbuster has to beat that, and all saleable stars who could have done so much to bring Indian cinema to international standards are busy competing with each others' box-office earnings. Still, at a time like this, a ‘Ship of Theseus’ or ‘The Lunchbox’ was made is a small miracle. 2014 has some interesting films lined up, mostly in mainstream genres, but that by itself is not a bad thing. Buzz is loud about Imitiaz Ali's ‘Highway’, starring Randeep Hooda and Alia Bhatt; in fact Alia is believed to be the next big thing. She also stars with Arjun Kapoor in the film version of Chetan Bhagat's 2 ‘States’. Post ‘Ram Leela’, Ranveer Singh's star is on the ascendant and the promos of his ‘Gunday’ with Arjun Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra have been received well. Abhishek Chaubey's ‘Dedh Ishqiya’, a sequel to ‘Ishqiya’ is in the news because it has Madhuri Dixit finally making a worthy comeback. But the film that will probably work better for her is Soumik Sen's ‘Gulab Gang’, in which she plays a fiery social activist,

In The New Year crossing swords with Juhi Chawla. If last year belonged to Deepika Padukone and Vidya Balan, then both ladies have films lined up— the former has ‘Finding Fanny Fernandes’ and ‘Happy New Year’, the latter has ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects’ and ‘Bobby Jasoos’. On the offbeat side, there's Dibakar Bannerjee's ‘Byomkesh Bakshi’ with Sushant Singh Rajput in the title role, and Devika Bhagat's ‘One By Two’ with Abhay Deol, Anurag Kashyap's ‘Bombay Velvet’ with Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma, Abhishek

Kapoor's ‘Fitoor’ with Aditya Roy Kapoor, who also appears with Parineeti Chopra in Habib Faisal's ‘Daawat-E-Ishq’.There's also Krishna DK and Raj Nidimoru's ‘Happy Ending’ with Saif Ali Khan and Ileana D'Cruz and Omung Kumar's much talked about ‘Mary Kom’ with Priyanka Chopra playing the medal-winning boxer. But the mainstream cannon is loaded too – Salman Khan starrer's ‘Jai Ho’ and ‘Kick’, Aamir Khan starrer ‘PK’ directed by Rajkumar Hirani, Prabhu Dheva's ‘Action Jackson’ with Ajay Devgan, Siddharth Anand's ‘Bang Bang’ with Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif, Sajid Khan's ‘Humshakals’ with Saif Ali Khan and Ritiesh Dekhmukh, Anurag Basu's ‘Jagga Jasoos’ with Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, Kabeer Khan's ‘Phantom’ with Saif Ali Khan

and Katrina Kaif, Karan Malhotra's ‘Shuddhi’ with Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor, Rohit Shetty's ‘Singham 2’ and Anees Bazmee's star-studded sequel ‘Welcome Back’. Siddharth Malhotra who had made his debut with ‘Student of the Year’, gets Vinil Mathew's ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’ opposite Parineeti Chopra and ‘The Villain’ with Shraddha Kapoor, while his co-star Varun Dhawan is doing ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya’ with Alia Bhatt and his father David Dhawan's ‘Main Tera Hero’. The new face of the year will probably be Tiger Shroff making his long-awaited debut with ‘Heropanti’. That sounds like a very busy 2014, if only Bollywood would stop counting and let the creative juices flow...

Suniel Shetty, the captain of the team, seems thrilled with this recent association and stated that he loves the way Armaan plays cricket and hence he is getting the actor to play for the team.

Though the cast remains the same, the director who gained fame with ‘Rock On’, Abhishek Kapoor, will not be directing the sequel. The sequel is slated to go on floors in January 2015.

Clarke says SCG wicket pace-friendly for fifth Test, may induct an extra seamer

S

YDNEY: Australia captain Michael Clarke says he's never seen more grass on a Sydney Cricket Ground pitch and predicts it will suit a pace bowling attack as the home side attempts to complete a 50 Ashes sweep over England. The state of the wicket could see fast bowler James Faulkner included for the test beginning tomorrow, possibly to replace middle-order batsman George Bailey. It would be Australia's first change to the starting XI in the series. If Australia doesn't make any changes, it would be just the fourth team to do that in a fiveTest series. Only England against Australia in 1884-85, South Africa against England in 1905-06 and the West Indies against Australia in 1991 were able to retain the same starting lineup in a five-Test series. Clarke admitted it would be "extremely romantic" to maintain the same team for the fifth consecutive Test, but said it wouldn't alter coach Darren Lehmann's policy to pick the best XI for every match. "If conditions turn out to be similar to what they have been in the past four Test matches then I think selectors will go that way," Clarke said today. "But we certainly need to pick our best team to win this Test match." Bailey has struggled in his debut Test series, averaging 27.20 runs with just one half-century, while Faulkner is a bowling all-rounder with a firstclass bowling average of 142 wickets at 23. "It might whiten up a little bit but that is as much grass as I have

England's cricket players Alastair Cook and Ian Bell wear pink caps to show their support for the McGrath Foundation at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney, Australia on Thursday. The McGrath Foundation was co-founded by former Australian cricket player, Glenn McGrath, to increase breast cancer awareness. seen on an SCG pitch," Clarke said. "It feels pretty hard at the moment. Looking at it today I think it will certainly suit the fast bowlers." The only other likely changes to the Australia team would come from injuries. All-rounder Shane Watson injured his groin while bowling during the Melbourne Test and fast bowler Ryan Harris has had knee and foot soreness throughout the series. But both bowled in the team's final net session. "I don't have any idea of the team at this stage," Clarke said. "We're waiting to see how the guys pull up tomorrow (Friday) morning."

Clarke says he expects England to make some changes, including recalling dumped wicketkeeper Matt Prior. "He's been an important player for England over a long time," Clarke said of Prior. "I think you can see the benefit of (wicketkeeper) Brad Haddin in our team, just with his experience. "Obviously (Haddin's) performances have been great but his experience being our vice-captain is crucial to our team and I think Matty's probably very similar to Brad in regards to his worth to the England team." ENGLAND TO STICK WITH

BAIRSTOW BEHIND THE STUMPS Captain Alastair Cook says Jonny Bairstow will continue behind the stumps for England in the final Ashes Test starting today despite support for the experienced Matt Prior from rival skipper Michael Clarke. Prior was dropped for Bairstow for the fourth Test in Melbourne after an indifferent series but his understudy gave a mixed performance, dropping a catch and failing to respond to a snick from Chris Rogers when he was on 19, with the opener going on to score a century. Clarke said Prior's vast experience was needed by England as they seek to deny Australia a 5-0 whitewash in Sydney, but Cook said Bairstow would get another chance as wicketkeeper. "I think Jonny deserves another chance. It's very difficult to come in for one Test match," Cook said today. "We know he's a very talented cricketer, he's got another opportunity in this Test match to show that." Australian captain Clarke said England missed the big-match experience of Prior, who has 75 Test caps. "I would be surprised if Matt Prior doesn't get recalled back into their team. Being a senior player with the amount of experience he has, I think they've certainly missed that," Clarke said at his media conference on the eve of the Test. "He's been an important player for England over a long period of time. I think you can see the benefit of (wicketkeeper) Brad Haddin in our team, just with his experience," he added. But while Prior has an impressive Test batting average of more than 40, Cook said he did not deserve to be in the England team on form. "He's still a fantastic cricketer, he's 31. He's still got a lot of Test cricket available to him if he wants it," the England captain said.

England face Ashes whitewash

S

YDNEY: Battered England are desperate to avoid the ignominy of a 5-0 series whitewash against Australia as they scramble to salvage some pride in the final Ashes Test in Sydney starting today. Alastair Cook's team -- coming off a dispiriting eight-wicket loss in the fourth Test in Melbourne -- face becoming only the third English side to lose an Ashes series 5-0 to their oldest rivals. It has been a tour from hell for England with the loss of senior players Jonathan Trott (stress) and Graeme Swann (retirement), star players out of form and Kevin Pietersen admitting his team-mates are "mentally fragile" from playing in back-to-back Ashes series. England have so far used 15 players and there are expected to be changes for Sydney, with Gary Ballance, Scott Borthwick and Steven Finn mentioned as possibilities. In contrast, Australia have been unchanged in

all four Tests. Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes the tourists will be unable to stop the Mitchell Johnson-led Aussie juggernaut in Sydney with the same team that succumbed in Melbourne in four days. "It is not easy for them. England will not do this with the same XI. There is too much baggage, there are too many scars," he wrote in an English newspaper. As England's tour has unravelled so has the pressure cranked up on Cook as skipper. "I'm totally responsible as captain for the team and if, at the end of the series, the selectors decide I'm not the best man for the job, then so be it," Cook said after the match in Melbourne, where England surrendered a winning position. "It would hurt and I've got no plans of going anywhere. I'm desperately trying to use as much of my experience of playing 100 Tests to help turn this team around."

ORS targeting accuracy, time saving in cricket: Taufel

A

BU DHABI: Simon Taufel, five-time umpire of the year, said a new trialled system will help attain more accuracy and save time on referred decisions during international cricket matches. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is trialling a new review system, called Officiating Replay System (ORS), in which a non-match umpire is provided with direct replays during a match. ICC introduced the Decision Review System (DRS) in 2008 on a trial basis. The system allows both teams to challenge decisions made by on-field umpires and have them referred to the TV official. The new system, aimed at further improving the prevalent DRS, was first trialled earlier this year in the Old Trafford Test in the Ashes between Australia and England, and then in the fifth one-day international between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi last week. The trial continues during the ongoing first Test between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi as well as the remaining two Tests in that series. Taufel, now ICC manager for umpires' training and performance after his officiating retirement in 2012, said the ORS will help in efficiency and accuracy in refered decisions. "It's a separate technology trial which is independent of what is happening with third umpire in this Test, and we are looking at different options to better serve the game of cricket and have less interruptions and less breaks in play, and improve decisionmaking as much as we can," Taufel told reporters. Taufel, declared umpire of the year from 2004 to 2008, explained the system which will be provided to the third umpire after the ORS is approved.

Sanju Samson managed to score on 15 runs.

UBAI: Shrugging off their disappointing loss against Pakistan in the last game, India U-19 boys held their nerves as they eked out a threewicket win against Sri Lanka with five balls to spare as they set up summit clash with arch-rivals Pakistan in the Asia Cup here. After being put into bat, Sri Lanka scored 223 for eight in 50 overs which India colts surpassed the target in 49.1 overs largely due to half-century

by opener Ankush Bains being awarded man-of-the match due to his innings of 54 off 53 balls with four boundaries and a six. It was a great effort considering that Bains was hit in the box off the last ball from pacer Binura Fernando's first over. The wicketkeeper-batsman then came back in the 34th over after India were tottering at 127 for five as he anchored the chase getting out in the 49th over when only seven runs were

required off 11 balls. Apart from Bains, Ricky Bhui (37), Akhil Herwadkar (27) and skipper Vijay Zol (22) scored a few runs but all got out after getting starts. A couple of square cuts off left-arm spinner Lakshan Jayasinghe and a slog over long on off leftarm seamer Anuk Fernando were the highlights of Bains' innings. The seventh wicket partnership with 58 runs with Kuldeep Singh (22) proved to be a clincher in the end for the India

colts. Kuldeep also contributed with the ball as his slow left-arm orthodox spin got him three for 49 in 10 overs. Sarfaraz Khan (2/28) and Deepak Hooda (2/43) were the other wickettakers. Brief Scores: Sri Lanka u-19 223/8 in 50 overs (Hashan Dumindu 60, Kuldeep Yadav 3/49, Sarfaraz Khan 2/28, Deepak Hooda 2/43). India U-19 224/7 in 49.1 overs (Ankush Bains 54, Ricky Bhui 37). He received the award from grand master Paramjeet Singh. The event witnessed participation from students from places like UP, Orrisa, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur and Mumbai.

ALSAD: The spin duo of Iqbal Abdulla and Vishal Dabholkar shared nine wickets between them as Mumbai registered a 27-run victory over Gujarat to sail into the Ranji Trophy quarterfinals. Mumbai thus, with 29 points became the third team from Group A to join table toppers Karnataka (38) and Punjab (30) in the knockout round. 40-time champions Mumbai, who conceded a lead in the first innings, recovered amazingly to bowl out Gujarat for 147 in 56 overs on the final day at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium. Left-arm spinner Vishal Dabholkar picked four for 33 besides Abdullah's all-round performance. Starting the day at 67 for three, overnight batsmen Askhar Patel and Bhargav Merai took Gujarat to 104 without any further loss. But then Dabholkar got the breakthrough by claiming the wicket of Merai (36), and when Patel was bowled by Suryakumar Yadav for 65 Mumbai got the sniff of a victory. Gujarat's last six wickets fell for just 12 runs in 11.2 overs as Abdullah and Dabholkar polished off the tail. Abdullah ended the second innings with bowling figures of five for 44 in addition to his 6/42 in the first innings. He also scored 68 runs (30 in the first innings and 38 in the second) in the low-scoring match. While Patel hit 10 fours in his 99ball knock, Merai had four boundaries in their 76-run stand for the fourth wicket. BRIEF SCORES: Mumbai: 154 & 273 beat Gujarat: 253 & 147 all out in 56 overs (Askhar Patel 65, Bhargav Merai 36; Iqbal Abdulla 5/44) by 27 runs. KARNATAKA THRASH DELHI BY EIGHT WICKETS NEW DELHI: It was a thorough professional performance by Karnataka as they crushed hosts Delhi by eight wickets to end their Ranji Trophy group league engagements as table toppers with 38 points from eight games. The visitors got some nice match

practice ahead of their quarterfinal match, as they chased down a paltry victory target of 115 in 29 overs after dismissing Delhi for 201 in 77.4 overs. This was Karnataka's fifth outright win this season. Opener Mayank Agarwal clobbered the Delhi spinners scoring 68 off 96 balls as the match finished well before tea. Mayank, who plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore hit six fours and three sixes. For Delhi, this was a season they would like to forget as senior players like Virender Sehwag became a liability for the team without any significant contribution throughout the series. The youngsters like Vaibhav Rawal, Unmukt Chand weren't consistent enough and the bowling was largely dependant on Ashish Nehra (28 wickets), while the other bowlers didn't complement the veteran pacer as they ideally should have. RAJASTHAN SIGN OFF RANJI CAMPAIGN WITH A WIN JAIPUR: Rajasthan ended their

wickets at the expense of 87 runs. Tripura's overnight batsmen Abhijit Dey (63), Kaushal Acharjee (35) began cautiously and had extended their partnership to 78 runs but Rasool dismissed both in a gap of four overs. After that skipper Yogesh Takawale (28) and Manisankar Murasingh (37) resisted the J&K attack for some time but eventually they were bundled out for 272 runs on the board. The visitors then lost Adil Rishi (1) and Ian Dev Singh (9) cheaply but Bandeep Singh (37) and Perveez Rasool (35) batted well after that and easily drew the game. Brief Scores: Tripura 280 and 272 in 103.5 overs (Abhijit Dey 63; Perveez Rasool 7/87) drew with J&K: 325 and 87 for 2 in 25 overs.(Parveez Rasool 37 not out, Bandeep Singh 37; Manisankar Murasingh 1/12).

HENNAI: Yuki Bhambri became only the third Indian to reach the singles quarter-finals of an ATP World Tour event at home, after winning his second round against an unfit world number 16 Fabio Fognini. It was the biggest win of Yuki's career when the formidable Italian, who struggled due to an injured left leg, conceded the match after trailing 1-6 5-5. Fognini had earlier pulled out of the doubles event for which he was supposed to partner India's veteran star Leander Paes. They duo were seeded second. Yuki, ranked 195, is only the third Indian after Somdev Devvarman and Leander Paes to make the singles quarterfinals of this event in Chennai. Somdev had ended runner-up in the 2009 edition. Paes had reached the semifinal in 1998 when the event was known as Gold Flake Open. Paes had lost to eventual champion Patrick Rafter from Australia. Despite his restricted movements, Fognini was good enough to trouble Yuki with his solid ground strokes, specifically his powerpacked forehand. A proper contest would have served as a good tennis lesson for the Indian youngster. It wll be first ever appearance for Yuki in an ATP tour tournament quarterfinals today and it will help him improve his ranking. "It's great to be in the quarterfinals of an ATP tour event before the home crowd. You don't get to play matches against world number 16 everyday. I am looking forward to next match tomorrow," Yuki said.

Yuki raced to a 3-1 lead but had to battle out two breakpoints in the next game before comfortably serving out the set in the seventh game. His next opponent would be either Canadian world number 32 Vasek Pospisil or Taipei's world number 66 Yen-Hsun Lu.

Fabio Fognini of Italy reacts during the match against India's Yuki Bhambri for their second round of men’s singles of ATP Chennai Open 2014 in Chennai on Thursday. Fabio Fognini retired from match after he was unable to continue after injury in the match. "He showed why he is top-20 player, hope he recovers well before the Australian Open," Yuki said when asked about Fognini's fight despite laid low by the injury. After breaking Fognini in the fourth game,

IN BRIEF Schumacher ‘stable’ but critical four days after ski accident

GRENOBLE, FRANCE: Formula One legend Michael Schumacher remained "stable" but was still in a critical condition after four nights in hospital battling severe brain injuries following a skiing accident in France. The German racing great remained in an induced coma and a critical condition, with his wife Corinna, 16-year-old daughter Gina-Maria and 14-year-old son Mick at his bedside in the French Alpine city of Grenoble. The seven-time world champion's fight for survival after he fell and slammed his head on a rock Sunday has shocked legions of fans used to seeing him cheat death on the racing tracks. "At the moment, he is stable," the 44-year-old's manager Sabine Kehm told reporters massed outside the hospital in Grenoble.

Bhatti’s double gives Pakistan edge in first Test

ABU DHABI: Paceman Bilawal Bhatti removed experienced Sri Lankan batsmen Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene off his successive deliveries to put Pakistan in command of the first Test. The 22-year-old debutant removed Sangakkara (55) with the last ball of his tenth over and then had Jayawardene off the first of his next to leave Sri Lanka at 186-4 in their second innings at close on the third day on a Sheikh Zayed Stadium pitch which had eased out for batsmen. Junaid (2-46) built on the strikes by dismissing Kaushal Silva for 81, caught behind in the last over of the day. Before that Silva and Sangakkara added 99 for the second wicket which had thwarted Pakistan's pace-cum-spin attack in the last session.

SLC likely to be drop Malinga from Bangladesh tour COLOMBO: Sri Lanka Cricket is likely to drop pacer Lasith Malinga from the national squad to tour Bangladesh as a means of sending a strong signal to the star bowler over his indifferent attitude towards training and poor performance. Following Sri Lanka's 2-3 loss in the recent ODI series against Pakistan in the UAE, the SLC officials had felt that the team's performance was extremely below par. The sources told 'Daily Mirror' that a lot of changes could be made in the team by infusing new players into the system through a gradual rotation system of resting seniors and trying out new talents in their place. "Malinga's pathetic bowling and fielding had been a main topic of concern," the newspaper was quoted as saying.
