Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena cadres unleash violence and mayhem outside Old Custom House

Stones being thrown in retaliation, the presence of policemen notwithstanding, yesterday.

S

hiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) cadres came to blows and indulged in stone-throwing yesterday outside the office of Mumbai City District Collector and Returning Officer Shaila A. even as their leaders marched in to file their nomination papers. In a free-for-all, cadres from both the sides pelted stones and cold drink bottles at each other, forcing the police to resort to a lathi-charge. The rioting left two Shiv Sena activists Krishnakant Shinde, Ash-

wini Khatavkar, Jai Maharashtra television channel cameraman Dilip Rai and a police inspector grievously injured. A case of rioting has been registered at the Mata Ramabai Ambedkar Marg police station. According to reports from media-persons present, trouble began when Sena candidate from Mumbai South Lok Sabha constituency, Arvind Sawant, accompanied by his followers reached the Collectorate in Fort. Cadres from both the sides began waving party flags and had verbal exchanges. The situation soon deteriorated with stones and cold drink bottles being thrown by both groups. The Jai Maharashtra news channel cameraman, Dilip Rai, sustained serious injuries as miscreants smashed a cold drink bottle on his head. District Collector Shaila A. stated that the incident took place outside the 100 meter periphery of her office and that adequate police force has been deployed. Speaking to news-persons at party office Shivalaya in south Mumbai, party MP and general secretary Anil Desai stated that the supporters of MNS candidate Aditya Shirodkar from Mumbai South-Central had arrived at the venue even before Shirodkar was to arrive. Accusing the police of being mere bystanders in the rioting that ensued, he claimed that the provocation and attack on the Shiv Sena cadres was deliberate. Sawant on the other hand alleged that the MNS cadres present were deliberately trying to instigate the Shiv Sena cadres by abusing them in filthy language. Reacting to the situation, state NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik demanded that considering the clashes between the two parties, Continued on pg 5 ÂŤ

Do you think the govt's plan to notify legislation regulating fees in all education institutions across the state including Indian, foreign and those established and administered by any minority, is justified? Rahul Lal Parent Yes, the new rule is justified as it will ensure equality without any discrimination.

Ajay Valecha Photographer Even if the law is implemented, I do not think that the rules will be followed religiously.

Farhan Fayyaz Sheikh Choreographer It is big news for all of us that the fees are going to regulated so now there will be no heart break while paying fees for the foreign institutions as well.

Pratik More Actor The system is justified; just waiting for it to get implemented. Cannot comment till then because anything can change at any moment.

n what can be called an attempt to make sure that patients not only get treatment for illnesses but also get good follow-ups after the treatment, the state public health department has started a study beginning this year, where a tab on compliance to medicines, followups and overall betterment in health of people who have been fitted with stents under the Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee Yojana (RGJAY), will be kept. This Mumbai-based study that began in January 2014, will be conducted by the state-run JJ Hospital by means of random sampling of 500 patients. The patients will be called and interviewed to know about the regime of their medicines, follow-ups and their overall well-being after undergoing the

procedure. The genesis of the thought of conducting a research of this kind was when the officials from the state public health department found that a majority of people treated under the RGJAY are not following up. “Conducting follow-ups are essential because simply conducting procedures does not mean the patient gets alright. For some procedures, regular follow-ups and compliance to intake of medicines is a must. As angioplasty is one of the most commonly conducted procedures, we decided to study the pattern of follow ups of patients undergoing this procedure. Also, as an answer to one of the research questions, it was found that one third of such patients do not follow up and in angioplasty, if a patient does not take medicines regularly,

being present in the lab, going against the norm that a pathologist has to personally supervise the process of testing and then authenticate the reports as they are responsible for the reports which bear their signature. “We have sent out circulars to all doctors in the IMA to resist from indulging in such practices else the association will not be in a position to help members in any way who are are found guilty of supporting and associating themselves with illegal laboratories”, said Dr. Sarda.

MUMBHAI The State Public Health Department is also planning to ask hospitals empaneled in RGJAY to submit statistical summary report about rate of incidences of hospital-acquired infections and adherence to the golden hour while handling cases of strokes and attacks. Reports are expected to start coming in, in the next two months, informed Dr. Lochan. it might lead to complications. Taking all these factors into consideration, we have decided to conduct this study. By this we are trying to make sure that the budget for health services is optimally utilised for treatment as well as follow-ups”, said Dr. Meeta Lochan, Secretary, State Public Health Department. The data collection for this study will go on till April and the results are expected to be out by May. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

Bindiya Chamkegi..!

The bindi, applied or placed on the forehead, holds special significance in Hindu culture. Sported by most women, the bindi, in its various forms, has innumerous meanings attached to it. A common adornment on the faces of a large number of people across South Asia, it is no more restricted to Hindu women. The traditional bindi is a big red dot, and has multiple implications. The Warkaris are one such example. Apart from enhancing beauty, it is supposed to be a worship of one's intellect, enhances focus and aids one's intellectual and spiritual progress, keeps a person calm (especially chandan applied by men). In modern times though, men have largely dropped painting their foreheads as have a number of young females, especially when dressed in western attire. It however is widely visible at cultural events albeit in its new modersnised avatar. Sushil Kadam captures the bindi in all its glory.

First conviction under 376 (e) – Shakti Mills common convicts found guilty! By Philip Varghese

A

lmost a week after the Bombay High Court said that it would not interfere at this stage with the decision of the Sessions Court to frame section 376 (e) for the three common accused in the gangrape cases, the Sessions Court on Thursday found the trio guilty under the additionally framed charge, which attracts maximum penalty of capital punishment. Interestingly, the three persons convicted of two gang-rapes in the Shakti Mills at Mahalaxmi in South Mumbai last year, have become the first to be convicted under a new legal provision that punishes repeat offenders with a life term or death sentence. The convicts Vijay Jadhav, Kasim Bengali and Salim Ansari could face the death penalty after being found guilty on Thursday under this section for repeat offenders, which was brought in force along with major changes in the law after the gang-rape of a young student in Delhi in Dec, 2012 based on suggestions by the Justice Verma Committee. The quantum of sentence is likely to be pronounced by the court on Friday. It will be recalled that on Wednesday, three witnesses were recalled by the defence who were examined and crossexamined by the lawyers. Hearing a petition filed by the accused challenging the adding of charges that attract the death penalty, a di-

vision bench of Justice Naresh Patil and Justice Abhay Thipsay had said that the accused could raise the issue of whether the charges were properly added before the Sessions Court, which is hearing this matter. Kasim Bengali, Vijay Jadhav and Mohammed Salim Ansari are the common accused who are also convicted in the telephone operator gang rape case. The 18-year-old telephone operator was gang raped on the premises of Shakti Mills in July last year, a month before the photojournalist was brutalised on August 22.Immediately after the court pronounced the verdict in the telephone operator's case, the prosecution had pressed for section 376(e) in the photojournalist rape case and the court had framed that charge for punishment for repeated offence of rape under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Following this, the accused had moved the Bombay High Court, which completed hearing the final arguments on Thursday after which the verdict was pronounced, informed Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam. He further added, “The court heard in-camera one of the accused who said that he wanted to say something. The three men have already been sentenced to life imprisonment in the telephone operator's gang rape case. This qualifies them for punishment under the amended section in the photojournalist gang rape case.”

wo coaches of a train bound for Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) caught fire at peak hours on Thursday evening at Dadar station. No casualties have been reported. According to railway officials, the reason for the fire is yet to ascertained and an inquiry has been ordered. A guard on board the Karjat-CST fast local informed authorities that a fire was detected in the last two bogies while it was stationed at platform 6 of Dadar station, around 5.30 pm yesterday. The fire fighting system at the station was immediately pressed into action and the local fire brigade was called. Railway personnel had turned off the electricity supply of the Over Head Equipment (OHE) to avoid a

possible short circuit. Manned with hand-held fire extinguishers they fought the fire. Platform 6 was cordoned off. The fire brigade successfully extinguished the fire, but could not yet identify the source and type of fire. However, they suspect it to have been an electric fire. A Divisional Railway Management official said, “The railways and the fire brigade were successful in extinguishing the fire. As a standard operating procedure, we have switched off the inflow of current in the OHE. Due to this, all trains on this line were also stopped.” The official said that the results of the investigation will be submitted after examining the forensic evidence. Local train traffic was restored within the hour although there was a 45minute delay.

here is a gargantuan demand for Modi's rallies, but there's only one Modi. To tackle this problem, the BJP yesterday announce that they will be projecting Narendra Modi's next rally on 3D Holographic Video Walls at 100 locations across the country. The rally which is to be held on April 6 will be projected live across 10 locations in the state, that includes one spot in the city at Borivali, Mumbai North, announced Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council Vinod Tawde. Commenting on Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan's challenge to debate Modi on development issues, the BJP leader retorted that Chavan should first ask his party bosses to declare him as its prime ministerial candidate

Now Narendra Modi’s next rallies will be on 3D Holographic Video Walls. and then think of engaging in a debate with the likes of Modi. In reply to queries over the Congress junking the Gujarat development model, Tawde wanted to know why the Congress-led Rajiv Gandhi

he Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will begin elections today for four statutory committees – standing, improvement, education and the BEST (including its six special committees). The new chairpersons for the standing and improvement committees will be elected today, while the election for education and BEST panels will be held later. BMC sources have claimed that the ruling Shiv Sena will be continuing with Mankhurd corporator Rahul Shewale as BMC chairman of the standing committee, making it Shewale's fifth consecutive term. Shewale is also going to contest the general elections from the South

Central constituency. The chairpersons for the improvement and education committees are likely to be replaced by BJP corporators Ujjwala Modak and Vinod Shelar respectively. Modak is predicted replace Ram Barot while Shelar is likely to take

ulund on Thursday was full of jhaadu yielding women on the streets. No, they were not on their way to bash someone. It was their way of extending support to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Medha Patkar who was to file her nomination for Lok Sabha that day. A mixed bag of people from all ages and religions were seen dancing to the beat of the dhols and screaming slogans in support of Tai, as Patkar is fondly known. The rally called 'Sankalp Yatra' went on for around two hours and saw hundreds of people come together. It began from Mulund station (West) and ended at the BMC office in Mulund East. A 70-year-old gentleman who was dancing to the dhol beats was the highlight of the rally.

Vijay Gupta who is a resident of Mulund and never had faith in any of the political parties is now siding with the AAP because he says that he can relate to their ideologies and their goals for the country. “Corruption is the root cause of all problems and AAP is ready to deal with that issue. This is what got them my support”, said Gupta. Reflecting the thoughts of her supporters, Medha Patkar while speaking to the ADC said, “People need change. Change in electoral politics, change in leadership. An overall change in the country. They need a corruption-free democratic country where leaders ask questions and demand answers. And this is what we are here to do. Everybody knows we will not keep quiet. We will bring the change that people need. That is why we are getting support where age, caste, gender and religion are no barriers”.

Ponder awhile… “The road to ruin is always in good repair, and the travellers pay the expense of it.” – Josh Billings

Why begin road work just before rains? W

HY do road repairs in Mumbai start just before the arrival of monsoon? Why are not the repairs undertaken just after the end of the rainy season in October? If road repair starts after the monsoon, the work can go on, in the sun, uninterrupted for 7-8 months. If the repairs begin after April, the rains will come and all the work done will be washed away. This perhaps is what road contractors want. There can be no other explanation for this: Why do they wait till almost the end of the summer and the arrivals of the rains? It looks like road work is carried out according to well-thought out plans. They make more money if the repaired work is washed away and they have to do it all over again. Delay in the work also escalates the cost. This year, the BMC has started repair work in as many as 1,000 roads and footpaths. Some repair work in gardens will also be carried out. Total cost allocated by the BMC: Rs.3,000 crore! The BMC has a master plan for repair and construction of roads. It is a fact that the city needs more roads, but what it needs more are also wide roads. The number of vehicles on the roads keep increasing. We have got to widen the roads so that there will be more space for cars. It is being said that there is a road mafia in Mumbai and that it cannot be eliminated. There is some substance in this allegation. It is to be seen how much of the big chunk of money allotted to road work will actually be used for the purpose it was meant for: Since Independence, the situation has remained the same. Road contractors and firms have survived despite repeated investigations, imposition of fines, and such other punitive exercises. It looks like it cannot be defeated.

S

o engaged is the average citizen with the social media, the dozens of TV channels and the print media, especially the dailies, that very often the scholarly journals – the weeklies, monthly and quarterlies, are largely forgotten. I remember reading an article in ‘Radical Humanist’ that had something to say about Kejriwal. The author was K.S. Chalam, Director, Swamy Ramananda Thirtha Rural Institute, Hyderabad. And this is what he had to say: Kejriwal appears to have said that he had no ideological obligations and is willing to take ideas both from the Left and the Right. Is it not an opportunistic statement? “The long, critical article was headed: “Why AAP Model is Unsafe for India? Then we have the United States lecturing to us on Human Rights, putting on high airs. Here’s a story that appeared in ‘DNA’ (March 19): According to the story, a report entitled “Go Home Terrorist: A Report on Bullying Against Sikh American School Children” was recently released in Washington. Sikh children in American schools are punched, kicked and have had their turbans ripped off by fellow white students, and called ‘Bin Laden’. Some of the Sikh students even had to face abuses like ‘Go Home Terrorist”. Their only fault was that they are Sikh students who live in accordance with their Faith.” The report was focused on schools in Seattle, Indianapolis, Boston and Fresno. I don’t remember seeing this story on many of our dailies. Isn’t it news? Before giving us a moral lecture on the alleged failure of an Indian diplomat vis-a-vis her Indian housemaid, the U.S. Government could be better employed in doing some inward-looking itself. Beating up Sikh children and hurting their religious feeling is not exactly a sample of defending Human Rights.

Shocking reference to the Gita And then we have sick academicians writing on Hinduism like Wendy Doniger whose book on the religion had to be withdrawn by its publisher, Penguin India. ‘Bharatiya Pragna’ (March 2014) reveals that the petition to the publisher was signed by more than 10,000 people. To quote a few paragraphs from the petition may be helpful to enlighten our pseudo-secularists. Thus: “Throughout the book, Doniger analyses revered Hindu Gods and Goddesses using her widely discredited psycho-sexual Freudian theories that modern, humanistic psychology has deemed limiting. These interpretations are presented as

hard facts and not as speculations. Doniger makes various faulty assumptions about the tradition in order to arrive at her particular spin. In the process, the beliefs, traditions and interpretations of practicing Hindus are simply ignored or bypassed without the unsuspecting reader knowing this to be the case.” Doniger dismisses Harappan culture as limited to a bare 40,000 people when the correct estimate puts the number at 500,000. Doniger dismisses Harihara and Bukka (the founders of the Vijayanagar Empire) as double-crossing the Delhi Sultan by reconverting to Hinduism. The truth is that the brothers had been imprisoned and forcibly converted to Islam. They had every right to go back to their own religion, when they could escape. Krishna is supposed to have goaded human beings into all sorts of murderous and

ensue instantly. However, when Hindus respond with scholarly and honest criticism, their response is dismissed as the rantings of Hindu extremists. Indeed, Wendy herself sets the precedent by pretending that her only critics are Hindu extremists and consistently refuses to address the vast volume of genuine criticism....” It is difficult to understand this new surge in anti-Hindu sentiment under the blanket guise of scholarship and academic excellence. One belief is that Hindus are getting aggressively forward-looking and bagging top posts. Another theory is that beautiful temples are coming up in many American cities which have sizeable number of Hindus, inviting jealousy. A third theory is that American youth are getting attracted to Hinduism and need to be pulled up. But whatever the reason, it does not give much credit to American society.

MEDIAWATCH M.V. Kamath self-destructive behaviour. ‘Bharatiya Pragna’ quotes several other examples mostly nauseating, but the reference to the Gita is shocking. Wendy Doniger is quoted as having written: “The Bhagavad Gita is not as nice a book as some Americans think... Throughout the Mahabharata... Krishna goads human beings into all sorts of murderous and self-destructive behaviour such as war.... The Gita is a dishonest book.” But Doniger, evidently is not the only one to indulge in damning Hinduism. One Paul Courtright is reported as having written “Ganesha’s large belly is a proof of the Hindu male’s enormous appetite for oral sex”. Another author, Stanley Kurtz is reported as claiming that nursing Hindu mothers do not bond with their babies the way white women do.” Says the author of the article on Doniger, Sandeep Balakrishna: “If something similar were to be written about people of other cultures and/or religions in the U.S. or elsewhere, outraged screams of ‘racism’ would

‘Freedom First’ (March 2014) represents the Indian Committee for Cultural Freedom and it is the intellectual’s pride. So, when it attacks the Aam Aadmi Party, one must look up. In an article on the organisation, Firoze Hirjikaka (who is also on the Advisory Board of the journal) wonders “what is the principal emotion engendered when one contemplated the Aam Aadmi Party.” Says he: “For me, it is bewilderment tinged with exasperation. What is this motley crew up to? Why are its members running around with their heads stuck firmly up their rear ends? Do they have an agenda? Are they fiendishly clever or preternaturally stupid? Is their aim to be heroes or martyrs? Are they exhibiting obdurate stubbornness or is there a devious method to their madness? What is wrong with these guys? It seemed that Kejriwal and company were so caught up in the initial euphoria following their ascension to power that they had taken temporary leave of their common sense. The AAP acted like a puppy eager to please by wagging its tail and expecting a reward.... At the first taste of power, Kejriwal’s head – as well as those of his ministers – swelled like a balloon.... It wasn’t long before he started believing his own hype...” And there is more stuff like that. Somebody must send a copy of the March issue of the journal to Kejriwal to read. If, that is, he has time to educate himself. All that he seems to want is glamour and the attention of the media. And he is getting it in full measure.

HAT does Sri Bhagavan mean to me? After many years of experiencing his grace I can now reply, “He is everything to me. He is my Guru and my God.” I can say this with confidence because, had I not had the good fortune of seeing him and thereafter getting into closer contact with him, I would have been still groping in the dark. I would still have been a doubting Thomas. How did it all begin? When I was eighteen I read a lot of books by Swami Vivekananda and Swami Rama Tirtha. This reading generated a desire in me that I should also become a sanyasin, like the authors of these books. Their writings also implanted in me the ideal of plain living, high thinking, and a life dedicated to spiritual matters. Somehow, my desire to become a sanyasin was never fulfilled, but the ideal of a dedicated life made a deeper and deeper impression on my mind. At the age of twenty I had the good fortune of contacting Mahatma Gandhi. His ideals won my

heart and for several years I faithfully tried to put them into practice. I was doing my duty to the best of my ability and leading, as best I could, a pure and dedicated life until the age of thirty-eight. Around that time skepticism began to assail me and my mind became a home for all kinds of doubts. I began to doubt the ideals of Gandhiji; I began to doubt sadhus and sanyasins; I doubted religion, and I even

I had, as a consequence, lost whatever little reverence I might have had for sadhus and sanyasins. I found myself slowly but surely losing my interest in religion. The very word itself eventually became a synonym in my mind for a clever ruse to delude the credulity of the world. In short, I began to live a life lacking optimism and faith. Bus strike uncalled for THE BEST strike crippled the city despite HC orders to drivers and conductors not to go on strike. This is not the first time that bus passengers were left in a lurch by the BEST's flash strike. It is not fair on the part of the public transport system to make people suffer for their demands. Long queues were witnessed in most parts of the city with even school going children suffering. Mutiny on city roads saw the BEST drivers and conductors go on a mass casual leave in protest against computerised duty rota to be introduced shortly. Lakhs of daily commuters, including students appearing for their annual exams had to trudge to the nearest railway station in the scorching heat as the government failed to provide alternate transport. — C.K. Subramaniam, Sanpada

THE unexpected flash strike by 20,000 staffers of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) for protesting against the new software to organise the shifts of the conductors and drivers put around 50 lakh commuters including exam-going students and office-goers in serious trouble. I strongly feel that this is nothing but dictating terms and conditions by the BEST union who held people to ransom for their selfish personal goals, resulting in auto and taxi drivers taking advantage to loot passengers. The need of the hour is that the state government and its officials must take strong action against the striking employees of BEST hand and must

Riots abound THE 2002 Gujarat riots again cropped up on an ADC page (Mar. 31). It told us how Teesta was settling her 'vad' with Modi with the help of a brigade of 80 so-called intellectuals. These intellectuals surviving on sumptuous sustenance dished out by the Congress, are worried that their cocktail parties may dry up if Modi comes in. On the edit page, we had columnist Virendra Kapoor (thankfully not so intellectual as Anil Dharkar and Alyque Padamsee) giving us facts and figures to convey that long before, and even after, Gujarat 2002 riots have been with us. He refers to online encyclopedia of mass violence - "Chronological index of Hindu Muslim riots in India" (194786). In three particular riots of 1964 (Calcutta Rourkela and Jamshedpur) the percentage of Hindu casualties was far more than those of Muslims. For the history of pre-partition riots, one must read 'India Divided' by Dr. Rajendra Prasad and 'The Partition of India' by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Dr. Prasad has described how in 1902 Lucknow had riots because the British government replaced Persian by Hindi as the court language in UP. — A.K.R. Hemmady, Virar

Wily Pawar MARATHA strongman Sharad Pawar is a wily politician par excellence. In order to cause confusion in the ranks of his proponents as well as opponents, he is deliberately sending out contradictory signals. He is adept at the art of keeping his cards close to his chest, to be revealed at a crucial moment. Within 24 hours of speaking in favour of the BJP, he takes care to launch a frontal attack on the saffron party. Thus, an escape route is always kept open to be resorted to in case of an exigency. — Jubel D’Cruz, Dombivili

Secular or communal? SECULARISM has become a routine and common weapon against Narendra Modi. It is also the most deadly weapon being bandied around in the war of words leading up to the elections. Hence one needs to redefine the word. The Congress Party conveniently forgets the carnage against Sikhs as well as against Muslims in Congress-governed states. Nor have Mumbaikars forgotten what they have seen. If pampering the minority is secularism, then the Congress has succeeded. However, pampering the minorities does not mean their lot improves, as recent statistical data shows. There is a tremendous increase in the number of uneducated poor Muslims resulting in low employment. Yet there are a number of elite, scholastic, rich and talented Muslims, including in film and television, art, sports, medicine, law, business etc. This shows that you cannot suppress or oppress those worthy of success. It is the poor who have large families and large numbers of children with almost no resources to feed or educate them who are the worst hit. Nothing is being done by the Congress Government in that direction for fear of losing their support base in the Muslim community. In some

The Malayasian Airlines aircraft which went missing almost a month ago has still not been traced, increasing the mystery surrounding its disappearance. THE ill-fated Malaysian airliner MH 370 flight remains a massive mystery as far as its final outcome is concerned. Another bit of information I read about in the US newspapers is that this flight was carrying in its cargo a potentially dangerous element – Lithium, which when gets heated becomes inflammable. It is indeed mysterious to observe how the

Malaysian security could afford to accept such a dangerous baggage which has already caused considerable concern in case of the Dream liner. There are many overlooks which are quite precarious lapses as far as the basic safety of a flight is concerned considering the lives of so many passengers. It indicates that the disappearance of this aircraft still

I coined a new phrase and wish to contribute it to the ever-growing English language. It is: As mysterious as the missing Malaysia Airlines. I am quite saddened to note that we have technologies to detect presence of water on the surface of Moon or Mars and observe even a slight disturbance in a far away galaxy that is a few billion light years away but no such tools or techniques to find out the missing airplane that is lying somewhere certainly not more than 11,000 meters deep on the floor of the Indian Ocean. My hunch is that militants from the Phillipino rebel group Abu Sayyaf could have boarded the flight MH 370, and diverted it to the remote jungles of Philippines. I pray and wish that all passengers emerge from a remote jungle freeing themselves from their captivity. I am hoping for this miracle. — Lakshman Sundar, Vashi

ore than two years after investigating the case of levelling false allegations and defaming the reputation of the complainant by creating a fake e-mail ID, Mumbai's crime branch has now identified the accused who may soon face arrest. An FIR against the accused has been registered at the Vakola police station under relevant sections of the IT Act. The accused is a Christian philanthropist and activist – Joseph Dias – better known as Bro Joe. According to the police, Dias created a fake e-mail ID from his computer at home and drafted a letter levelling several allegations against Abraham Mathai and e-mailed it to various recipients withholding the identity

of the sender. This was done in September 2011, when Mathai was the vice-chairman of minority commission, added the police. Talking to the ADC, a high ranking crime branch official said, “Soon after the fake e-mail was sent to various people, Dias emailed a letter praising Mathai and his work as a vice-chairman, to prevent the police from suspecting him”. However, sleuths from the Cyber Cell began verifying the role of Dias in the case discovered that both the e-mails were sent from Dias's computer, as the IP addressees of both the e-mails were the same. Dias was summoned by the crime branch but said that he had not committed any such act and alleged that his computer was hacked. The crime branch probed the case to as-

Recently, the FSL submitted a report stating that Dias's computer was not hacked and both the e-mails were sent from his computer. About Joseph Dias Dias is the founder of the Catholic-Christian Secular Forum (CSF), and was first exposed by a Santacruz resident, Molly Rodrigues. In 2011, the latter exposed Dias's false claims of being a recipient of the ‘Mother Teresa Excellence Certificate’. Dias had also claimed that he had received the honour from former Pakistan human rights minister Dr. Ansar Burney during the latter’s visit to Mumbai a few years ago. However, this claims of Dias were also proved wrong, when Dr. Burnry had informed the Indian media that he had come to Mumbai to receive the Mother Teresa Award and not to give away any award or certificate. In this regard, Dr. Burnry had expressed his shock over the photo picture, which he stood for in good faith with Dias was misused.

Terrace parties are a lot of fun and usually include bottles of beer and glasses of sangria, barbecues and good company. They also make for the perfect Sunday brunch and so, Dev Goswami & Shirley Mistry tell you how to throw one yourself

Terrace ParTy T

errace parties are a great way to catch up with a few friends, with some good alcohol and grilled food for company. They are, easy to throw together and so much more relaxed and fun as compared to a proper, sit-down dinner. And, best of all, throwing a terrace party means that you can let your personality shine through everything, right from the décor and the menu, down to the cutlery. We bring you some easy DIY décor ideas, marinades and sauces you can whip up in a jiffy, tell you what you should have on hand and how to have a blast without the summer heat getting to you.

DIY Décor Just because you are throwing a party and have to manage everything yourself, it

doesn't mean you can't make it look interesting. In fact, there are several nifty ways to spruce up your space and add elements that are sure to catch every one’s attention:

Holders: Instead of placing spoons, forks and knives in a heap in one corner, try this easy alternative. Buy three small flower pots, clean them thoroughly and let them dry out in the sun. Then, using black chart paper, cut out three pieces of any shape you like, to form the label. Write ‘Spoons’ on the first, ‘Forks’ on the second and ‘Knives’ on the third. Stick a label on each flower pot and voila — you have your own cutlery stand. This will keep your cutlery from getting jumbled up and will also help you keep track of what item you need to refill when.

Table runner: A terrace party can get on to a thick thread. You can use these boisterous, so it isn't the best time to whip out your favourite table runner, because it is sure to get dirty. However, we have a fun alternative for you. Get hold of a packet of popsicle sticks and lay them flat to form a sheet. Then, start glueing the sides to each other so that when you finish, you end up with a long popsicle mat. Next, paint it in your favourite colour. If you can't pick just one, splatter a whole bunch of colours on it using a fat paint brush. When the party is over, you can simply toss it out.

cupcake streamers: These are probably the simplest of the lot. Get hold of cupcake liners in different sizes, colours and patterns. Then, simply poke holes at the base of each cupcake liner and string them

streamers to adorn your walls and add a cute touch to your party.

Fairy lights: If you thought fairy lights were too clichéd and want to up your game, try this out. Buy medium sized paper cups (not the plastic ones). Then, using a sharp knife or blade, score each cup's bottom in the shape of the letter ‘X’. Next, get some printed paper (handmade works well too) and cut strips of it so that it wraps around each paper cup (much like a coffee sleeve). Then, stick the paper onto each cup. Now, all you have to do is get your fairy lights and push one individual bulb through the ‘X’ mark you scored on the bottom of the cup. Do this for each and every bulb and you have yourself a new lamp that is sure to

To personalise each guest's wine glass, simply cut out small hearts (or any other shape you'd like) from colourful paper for all your guests. Next, write each guest's name on a heart and cut small pieces of twine to thread each name tag. After you have threaded all the tags, simply wrap the twine around the stem of each wine glass and you are good to go!

Sauces Spiked BBQ: If store bought BBQ sauce won't make the cut, give it an upgrade. Sauté some onions until golden, add crushed garlic, red chilli flakes and a cup of bourbon to it. Let it come to a boil so that most of the alcohol evaporates. Then, add your BBQ sauce and stir until it is heated through.

MArinAdeS & SAUceS Ultimately, all your attempts at beautifying your space will fall flat if your food doesn't match up. Terrace parties and grilled food are the perfect match and so, we’re showing you how to make some easy marinades and sauces to liven up your menu.

chillies. Mix these ingredients with olive oil and toss in your meat. Once it’s off the grill, squeeze some lime over it. Asian Flavours: This light marinade is perfect for summer. Mix light soya sauce, fish sauce, chopped red chillies, coriander, ginger, garlic and lemongrass together for an Asian twist to your barbecue.

Summer Fresh: This one is easy to put together, is light and fresh. Depending on the quantity, finely chop lots of coriander (tender stalks included), garlic and green The Indian favourite: Take hung curd and

A grilled SAndwicH PArTy! If you don't have lots of time to put together a proper barbecue party and would like to still do something fun, you can always throw a grilled sandwich party. Read on for our tips on how to make it a successful one: The key to a successful sandwich party is having stations. Have one for bread, one for fillings and one for sauces. l All you knead is bread: White, brown, multigrain, brioche, pestoflavoured bread — the works! If you are in a pinch, even pav will work. Get hold of as many variants you can and slice them up. l Fill it up nice: In separate platters or bowls, lay out sliced ham,

Onion Jam: For something more sweet, slice onions (you will need to slice quite a large quantity) and begin to cook them on the stove on a low flame so that they keep softening, but don't brown. Add a few bay leaves and a hint of red chilli flakes. Once the onions are a deep brown and slightly sticky, add a few teaspoons of brown sugar (you don't want it too sweet though) and half a cup each of red wine vinegar and balsamic vinegar. Keep stirring occasionally till it begins to resemble jam. This is great on a grilled cheese sandwich!

crispy bacon, shredded chicken, minced meat, sautéed strips of beef or pork, lettuce, tomatoes, sliced avocados and onion rings. l Get saucy: For sauces, in different bowls, lay out chipotle, mustard, honey mustard, ranch dressing, garlic aioli, mayo and spiced mayo. You could also lay out some sliced olives, pickles and jalapenos. l For dessert: Dessert sandwiches like nutella and bananas or marshmallows sandwiched in brioche or a traditional PB&J work well. The idea is to get your guests to build their own sandwich and then bring it to the grill, where they can have it grilled. You can also make a few flavoured butters such as garlic, pepper-lemon and chilli-chive, so that your guests can pick one for added flavour if they wish to.

THe PArTy cHeck-liST The invitations are out, you've stocked up on alcohol and the marinaded meats are ready. It's the day of the party and how the party goes will depend on your preparations. This check-list will ensure that it doesn't become too hot and the party proceeds smoothly: Prep in advance: Cooking on the terrace might sound fun, but it might not be a good idea on really hot days. So, call a few friends over a little earlier and cook most of your food in advance. You can throw it on the grill for added flavour, but keeping the cooking to a minimum will ensure that it doesn't get too hot. ice, ice baby: Ice is one of the most important components of a party. You get ice cubes in the market at a nominal cost which will save you the hassle of freezing new cubes every time a batch gets over. Borrow or get a large ice box to store these cubes — the box will also come in handy to cool water — at terrace parties, cold water will be missed much more than you think. chairs & tables: Early on in the party most of your guests will be on their feet, but you'll need seating arrangements sooner or later. So, have a stack of chairs ready in a corner. Also getting a few tables will ensure that people don’t have to constantly hold drinks and food plates in their hands, reducing the risk of spillages. A clean party: One of the easiest ways to ensure that you don't have to spend half of the next day cleaning up is to ensure that you don’t make a mess during the party. Place several bins or polythene bags for people to dispose of glasses and plates. Keeping a cleaning cloth handy will ensure that any spills are taken care of immediately. Also, while we're on the topic, keep lots (and we mean lots) of tissues handy. Your guests are going to need them.

selective silver

Small, newly opened store Argento is the place to go if you’re looking to add a dash of silver to your home décor. Dev Goswami tells you more

A

s the name indicates (it is the Italian word for silver), Argento is all about silver. This well-designed store is located on Linking Road and they are the exclusive retailers for Italian silverware brand, Ekaani. The décor of the plush store is simple. It is done up in allwhite and houses minimum furniture (just two counters apart from the wall mounted displays), which gives it a spacious feel. Through it’s exclusive deal with Ekaani, the store focuses on products from the Italian brand housing a vast range of figurines and gifting items, in porcelain and sterling silver. The figurines were what caught my attention the moment I stepped into the store. The hand-crafted figurines have a really good finish and are very well-detailed. Most of the them have been inspired by wildlife and the horse set, along with the panther, were some of the pieces that impressed me most. Their product range is divided into Divine, Luxury and Corporate sections. The Luxury collection features the figurines, while the Divine collection includes limited edition religious idols. These idols don’t really stand out as far as the design is concerned, but the beautiful finish and attention to detail, sets them apart from anything that you might have seen before. Their Corporate collection on the other hand, acts as their gifting range. Here you'll find tiny silver figurines, silverplated crockery and glass products. This range, while well-designed features designs that are not memorable. But, they are good options for what they're meant for — gifting. Argento also has it's very own jewellery collection. The gold-plated jewellery pieces are completely exclusive (they only make one piece of each design) and can be customised. The store has a constant flow

A vegetarian surprise If your reaction to a vegetarian Pan-Asian meal is a big ‘nah!’ then you should visit Asian Street Kitchen. Dev Goswami tells you how it will change this perception

T >> Asian Street Kitchen has outdoor as well as indoor seating options

>> (From bottom left) The Three Mushroom dumpling is sure to please any mushroom lover and although we did miss the meat in the Vietnamese Pho, it was a delightful preparation

he address of Asian Street Kitchen (ASK) (Chowpatty) is enough to indicate that the restaurant is pure vegetarian. Located in a predominately Gujarati/ Jain area, a restaurant that serves vegetarian food makes business sense. But, does it make culinary sense, when the cuisine in question is Pan-Asian — meals largely associated with seafood, succulent beef and fish stock? A visit to Asian Street Kitchen makes us answer in the affirmative. The white and lemon-green décor is soothing, giving the small restaurant a stylish touch without going overboard on the ‘fine’ in fine-dining. It has an overall vibe of a cheerful place where you can look forward to comfort food. So, without further ado, we proceeded to order our meal. We started off with the refreshing Virgin Mojito (`150), but it was run-off-the-mill. However, it was the unique Spiced Thai Iced Coffee (`150) that we couldn’t stop sipping on. The coffee had hints of cardamom and cinnamon and was truly delicious. We moved on to the spicy Tom Kha Soup (`150). It is rich, comforting and just the kind of soup that you should start your meal with. Next, we tried a range of appetisers that they call Street Favourites. The Three Mushroom dumpling (`270) is a delight for mushroom lovers, but the Asparagus, Water Chestnut & Pea dumpling (`290) was a bit under-flavoured. The Mushroom Skewers (`270) on the other hand, turned out to be one of the best dishes of the night. The dish is full of flavour and the different mushrooms were perfectly complemented by the teriyaki sauce. The tempura dishes (`280-290) were a mix of hits and misses. The vegetable tempura was a bit tough on the palate, but the baby corn tempura was tasty. Both, were accompanied by a delicious wasabi mayo. For our main course, we opted for the meal-in-a-

bowl, Vietnamese Pho (`325) and the Nasi Goreng (`330). Now, say Pho to a fan of Asian food, or someone who's been to Vietnam and the first thing they'll think of is beef — this cult dish is made with beef stock and contains beef chunks. (Fun fact: this dish is eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner in Vietnam.) At ASK, though we did miss the meat, the dish was delicious. It is extremely flavourful, with delicate hints of mint, chilli, basil and a dash of lemon. Palate-wise, it seems a bit incomplete, but that doesn't take anything away from the dish and it is a must-try. The Nasi Goreng is another must-try dish at ASK. It is a relatively hotter dish and has a wonderful mix of spices, rice and tofu. The fried rice is cooked in minimal oil and that just enhances the experience; I ended up cleaning up every last bite from my plate — it's that good! For dessert, we picked the Lemongrass Tart (`225), which is also a house recommendation. However, it wasn't as good as we expected. While the filling was extremely delicious, the base was a bit too thick and the chocolate bits on top overpowered the subtle lemongrass filling. The tart would have been much better without the chocolate. Overall, ASK will surprise you if you think that pan-Asian food can only be tasty if it includes meat. The food is comforting, delicious and full of flavour. We aren't saying that you won't miss the meat, but you won't regret eating at the restaurant either. Try it out! Lacking a Punch

We paid Buddha Belly’s new outlet a visit and weren’t wowed, to say the least. Shirley Mistry tells you more

B

uddha Belly is a small dim sum outlet, which looks more like a take-away joint than a sit-down restaurant. However, even though it houses very few tables (there is a mezzanine floor for seating), the space is quite welcoming. Wooden tables greet you and interesting food quotes are painted on the walls. The space is bright and even though it is tiny, it gives you the illusion of being airy. The wall opposite the seating area is fitted with framed photographs and is as far as the restaurant goes in terms of décor. The menus are already at the table, so you don’t waste time dilly-dallying as you wait for someone to hand you one. The concise menu features baked, steamed and fried dim sum, a few puffs and rolls and two mains along with some dessert and drink options. We sampled the basket of assorted dim sum in the vegetarian and non-vegetarian variants (`250 - `300). Each basket has eight pieces and the first one to reach our table was the Edamame & Truffle one. The edamame puree was so pasty and bland, it almost felt like we were eating chalk and there was no trace of truffle. The Thai Sambal Cottage Cheese & Corn ones were better, but there were too few corn kernels. The Spicy Vegetable ones were terribly disappointing, as they were just a mash of vegetables in a rather foul tasting sauce. They lacked texture and had no distinctive flavour. The non-vegetarian basket was up next and contained the Chicken Shiu Mai, Prawns Har Gau, Spicy Smokey Chicken and Chicken & Chive dim sums.

While the first two were thoroughly disappointing and a mish-mash of too many flavours, the others were delicious. The spices were just right and the flavours married well — something that the previous preparations lacked. We also tried the Noodle-rolled Prawns (`150 for two), which had an undercooked centre. The noodles stuck to the outer surface of the prawn, which made it inconvenient to eat and very oily as well. It was served with a sauce that comes closest to a spicy mayo and felt really out of place in an Asian restaurant. Having said that, dousing it in the soya sauce and chilli blend that was placed at our table did help rescue the dish. The other sauces however, are too overpowering and mask the taste of the dish entirely, instead of just heightening the flavours. Next up was the Lemongrass Chicken Sticky Rice (`175 for 2 parcels) and the Chicken Khow Suey (`175). The sticky rice was served as a parcel wrapped in a banana leaf, with chicken bits in the centre. It was bland, the chicken was tough and the dish on the whole was quite unappetising. The Khow Suey on the other hand was lovely. The chicken curry was creamy and spiced well and they didn't skinch on the accompaniments either. For me, this dish stood out and would probably be the only one I'd go back to Buddha Belly for. The servers are warm and attentive and the ambience is lovely. If you are in the area, I'd recommend stopping by for the Khow Suey, but as far as dim sum is concerned, there are several other restaurants that do a far better job.

Doing Dhaka!

Look beyond its grit and grime and Dhaka is sure to stun you into silence with its innate beauty, subtle grace and immense cultural wealth, says Raul Dias after a recent tryst with Bangladesh’s chaotic capital >> Dhaka is located on the banks of the Buriganga river

ou must be a die-hard cricket fan,” was a statement I encountered for weeks leading up to my maiden trip to Dhaka — with a strong emphasis on the ‘cricket’ bit. Right from my colleagues to the Indian immigration officer at the airport, all erroneously assumed that I (a non-believer in the religion of cricket) was going there to partake in the cricket mania. Why else would any ‘tourist’ visit a city like Dhaka? But, ask true blue, card carrying members of the ‘traveller’ brigade “why Dhaka?” and they, like me, will serve you with a volley of reasons to partake in Dhaka’s story. And what a richly-textured story this city by the Buriganga River has to tell! So, resolutely ignoring the strategically placed ICC T20 World Cup 2014 time tickers, I coughed my way through the potentially toxic fumes emanating from the city’s gazillion auto rickshaws or Baby Taxis as they are referred to, as I gaped at the cage-like, bicycledriven contraptions that ferry school children to and fro. Ensconced in a colourful cycle rickshaw with an equally colourful driver, I decided to pay obeisance to the vehicle I was riding in by visiting an iconic street housed in the precincts of Old Dhaka. Bicycle Street, which is more formally called Bangsal Road, is a meandering one, lined with shops selling bicycles of all kinds as well as stalls that do the special kitschy rickshaw art — that each driver tries to outdo the other by decorating his beloved cycle rickshaw with. A few yards away at the 300-year-old Hindu Street called Shankharia Bazaar, my ears suddenly picked up a tinkling sound that was being made by the workmen fashioning intricate pieces of jewellery from gold and other precious metals. Next, I chose to have a go at walking through alleyways that led me to the pink-hued Ahsan Manzil, nestled at the top end of a very nondescript street. This 144-yearold edifice was once the official residential palace and seat of the Dhaka Nawab Family and has been converted into a museum with all the regalia on full display. Having heard of this Dhaka oddity from a fellow traveller a few years ago, I couldn’t resist a glimpse at the serene Armenian Church in the Armanitola area. I call it an oddity because this is the only known place where you can still see old gravestones inscribed in traditional Armenian script. 300m north of the church, I discovered the Sitara Mosque, with

hilly slopes of Sylhet in Bangladesh’s north east. l Commune with nature in the wilderness of the mighty Sundarbans mangroves that Bangladesh shares with India. l For all you beach bums out there, plan a few days of sun, sand and surf at the beautiful coastal city of Cox Bazar.

Getting There: There are a number of flights to Dhaka from New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. Visas need to be taken in advance at the Bangladesh High Commission in India and take three to four working days to process. Travel within Dhaka is easy as many auto rickshaws, cycle rickshaws and buses ply between its various attractions and neighbourhoods.

l Visit the tea estates that dot the

its four domes that are entirely decorated with mosaic tiled stars giving it the name — Sitara. Still in Old Dhaka, dodging the black smoke belching buses and ear-shattering horns, I descended upon the paradisiacal 17th century Lalbagh Fort Gardens, where I found the beautiful Tomb of Pari Bibi, flanked on either side by the Diwani-i-Aam hammam and Lalbagh Fort Mosque. Feeling peckish, I couldn’t resist the lure of the famed Dhakai snack called chotpoti, hawked at almost every street corner out of glass box-like carts. Similar to bhelpuri, chotpoti is made from potatoes and chickpeas, mixed with chillies, onions, tamarind sauce, salt and spices and served in a paper cone topped with a grated hardboiled egg. I also had ros bhora, made from lentil flour and the Bangladeshi version of the patisapta that I bought from a shop dotted with luridly coloured sweetmeats. After washing it all down with a glass of borhani, a drinkable, Bangladeshi version of raita, I was satiated. Next, I visited the red-brick Curzon Hall, which is a part of the Dhaka University. This 110-yearold structure, built in the colonialmeets-oriental style, intended to serve as the Dhaka town hall and is today part of the University’s school of science. A little further down the road was the stunning ivory Supreme Court building and its wellmanicured lawns. But, the piece de resistance was the startlingly modern National Assembly Building or Jatiyo Sangsad Bhaban in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Central Dhaka. A true architectural marvel, the building was finished in 1982, with work having begun in 1961 and is based on the designs of American architect Louis Kahn. With a moat-like water body around it, the building is made up of huge walls deeply recessed by porticoes and large openings that let the light stream in. As the hotter than hot day gave way to the cool comfort of evening, I took a languid cruise down the main arterial Buriganga River, sailing on a tiny wooden boat to see how chameleon-like Dhaka is. The once grimy, grey waters of the Sadarghat Boat Terminal from where I boarded, seemed to take on a magical, shimmery orange hue as I sat in serene bliss and all seemed well in the world again. That’s what Dhaka does to you. It lovingly soothes away any aches and pains it might have inflicted on you. And all is forgotten, as it embraces you with all its might. When to Visit: The months from October to April are the best time to visit when Dhaka has a pleasant climate, while May to September are hot and humid. Accommodation: There are several accommodation options available in Dhaka that suit most budgets. The average cost for accommodation is around 6,000 Bangladeshi Taka (`5,000 approximately) per night for two, inclusive of breakfast.

“We have a lot of forex reserves. Right now, it is USD 300 billion plus. So, the key question is at what point you feel safe. I think, if you focus only on reserves, there is really no point at which you feel safe.. 400, 500, 600...Any level of reserves, until you get to Chinese level, it is probably not enough.”

It fell marginally on Thursday (April 03, 2014) a net 16.45 points (0.24%) and closed at the 6736 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 6772 points level. It then rose further and registered the day’s high at the 6776 points level at 9.16 a.m. The index then declined into the red and turned into a range bound movement until 2.30 p.m. It then declined further and registered the day’s low at the 6696 points level at 2.45 p.m. The index then rose sharply and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session and moved in a range of 80 points. Sentiment was bearish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 31 were losers, 18 were gainers and 1 remained unchanged. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS:

Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 8.67%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors. Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was negative. Amongst all the traded stocks, 670 were gainers, 843 were losers and 67 remained unchanged.

Slow Stocha stic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has declined in the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator has dropped below the slow D line (negative and a sell signal). However, such signals are considered invalid in the over-bought zone. RSI Indicator: The RSI fell and crossed below the 80 level and is now declining (negative if it continues).

MACD Indica tor: The MACD is above zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line but both lines are converging (negative if it continues). The ADX is rising while the Market Index is falling, which indicates that the present down trend is increasing in strength.

oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market but with a neutral bias. Suppor t Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 6446 points level. The next support is at the 6338 points level. Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 6753 points level. The next resistance is at the 6809 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 6737 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 6696. Support (2) = 6657. Resistance (1) = 6776. Resistance (2) = 6816. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index after having formed thre e consecuti ve doji patte rns (indicating indecisiveness amongst investors) has formed a black body candle on higher volumes. Thi s i s negati ve and indicates that the bias has shifted towards the sell side of the market. However, the index is above its 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the four averages are rising and also positively trended. Further, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. All these indicate a positive bias and the poss ibil ity of a fur ther up move unfoldi ng. Incidentally, the index is near a major resistance level at the 6753 points level. (The index tested that level intraday, yesterday). There is a possibility that it could find s ome fur the r resistanc e there. H owever, if it crosses above it then a further rise can be expected. Investors are advised to hold long positions.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Is above its 5-day average (at 6721) Positive. Is above its 15-day average (at 6602) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 6526) Positive. Is above its 200-day average (at 6053) Positive. All the four averages are positively trended. Positive.

REPCO’s niche focus on lower ticket-size loans and smaller geographies is likely to aid growth, with minimal competition from banks in this segment. We expect 29% earnings CAGR over FY14-FY16 driven by a 32% CAGR in the NII. With stable operating costs and rising financial leverage, ROE could improve to 18% by FY15/FY16 from ~15% in FY14E. The P/B premium to larger peers has been driven by better profitability and may sustain. Initiate coverage with BUY and a TP of Rs 410. Sizeable opportunity in a niche segment: The growth opportunity in the under-penetrated tier II/III cities remains sizeable. Given that the focus area of banks is on mortgage growth in metros, competition is likely to remain minimal. The focus of banks on higher tickets sizes should aid growth for smaller, niche HFCs like REPCO. Well-balanced asset mix; scope to improve liability mix: With bank and NHB loans making up for bulk of the borrowings and the likely reduction in NHB loans, new avenues of funding like NCDs/CPs may drive up costs for the company. However, focus on the higher yielding non-salaried segment and increasing proportion of LAP (loan against property) is likely to support spreads over the long term. Valuation premium may sustain: The P/B premium of REPCO over its larger peers like LICHF has expanded from a discount of 9% during Mar’13 to a premium of 81% at Mar’14-end. This expansion in premium has been driven by higher growth and stronger profitability, and may sustain. We initiate coverage on REPCO with BUY and a Mar’15 TP of Rs 410.

In Mar’14, JLR continued its growth momentum with decent growth, though growth tapered down and company underperformed peers during the month. JLR underperformed the industry as well as most luxury car makers with wide margin on YoY & MoM basis in US market. In Mar’14, JLR reported a growth 8.6% YoY & 11.8% MoM to 6,215 units in US market, as against Audi’s 7.5% YoY & 31% MoM growth, BMW’s growth of 18.6% YoY & 46% MoM and Daimler’s growth of 11% YoY & 20.5% MoM for the month. Jaguar’s volume soared 29% YoY to 1,816 units, while Land Rover rose 2% YoY to 4,399 units in Mar’14. We expect JLR to continue its positive momentum across the markets on the back of success of new launches at regular interval, we expect JLR to grow by 15% in US market in 2014. We maintain our positive view on the stock. On SOTP basis, we value Company’s standalone business at Rs. 32 (4x FY16E EBIDTA), JLR at Rs. 491 (4x FY16E EBIDTA) and other subsidiaries at Rs. 30 based on FY16E EBITDA, post excluding net debt of Rs. 90 per share, we arrive at target price to Rs 462 per share. We reiterate our BUY recommendation on the stock

Sharekhan calls a ‘Buy’ on UPL CMP: Rs. 201

Target Rs. 238

Key points: UPL plans to sell its 50% stake in Sipcam UPL Brasil S.A as part of a strategy to consolidate its assets (acquired inorganically) in the key geographies. The stake sale in Sipcam would release resources and enable the company to focus more on DVA Agro Brazil (a new product launch and reduction in working capital cycle) in which UPL holds a controlling stake (a 73% stake). From the transaction UPL will get a gross consideration of around Rs351 crore ($58.5 million) which is nearly double of what the company had paid to acquire the stake in the company in 2011. UPL had acquired the stake in April 2011 for close to EUR20 million (around Rs170 crore) and had invested Rs30-35 crore more in the company. Thus, the stake sale should result in gains for the company. Though we expect a double-digit growth in UPL’s revenues in Q4FY2014, but the margin could get affected by a harsh winter in the USA and Europe (along with the adverse impact of the rupee’s appreciation against the dollar). However, we are positive on the company due to its focus on improving cash flows (working capital cycle reduction), buy-back of shares using the free cash on books and new product launches that shall improve the growth outlook. We maintain our Buy rating on the stock with a price target of Rs 238. UPL selling stake to focus on consolidating DVA Agro position in Latin America: UPL is selling its 50% stake in a Brazilian joint venture for Rs351 crore. The company had acquired the stake in April 2011 for close to EUR20 million (nearly Rs170-175 crore) and the transaction should result in gains for UPL. The stake sale is part of a strategy to consolidate its position in Brazil and focus more on DVA Agro Brazil in which it has a controlling stake of 73% (by launching new products and reducing the working capital cycle). UPL will utilise the proceeds to either pay off its debts or to make new investments and expand business in the emerging markets.

Investment in real estate sector in India stood at USD 3.4 billion during 2012. "India has received a total estimated investment of USD 1.2 billion in the real estate sector making it the 10th most invested location in APAC region," C&W said in a statement. quoting its latest report 'Investment Market Beat' 2013. The APAC region received a record USD 487 billion of investment in the real estate sector. Of the nations surveyed for investments, China (core & emerging) recorded the highest volume of investments of USD 358 billion, followed by Japan (3rd rank) that recorded investments worth USD 44.6 billion in 2013. However, India was able to maintain its 10th position on the APAC stack despite the decline in investments largely due to some significant decline in volumes in other markets such as Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Taiwan. According to the report, investment in land was highest in India at USD 838 million followed by office (USD 247 million) in India during 2013. Investment in land suffered a

decline of 61 per cent while office saw a decline of 77 per cent. Commenting on the report, C&W Executive Managing Director South Asia Sanjay Dutt said: "There is a poignant pause that the investors have adopted so far as the Indian real estate market scenario is concerned, largely on account of the fact that India is currently at political cusp with general elections for the country just around the corner". Dutt noted that investors are shying away from making futuristic investments due to suggested regulatory framework changes, which are yet to be implemented. "This decline in investment numbers are however, not indicative of the sentiments investors have of India, as it continues to show future promise as a key market with the APAC region. This can be well understood from the fact that private equity has seen a rise of approximately 13 per cent Y-o-Y in the 2013," Dutt said. The consultant expects remarkable improvements in the economy in general and investment markets in specific by 2015.

His energetic dances in 'Farz', 'Humjoli' (1970) and 'Caravan' (1971) won him the epithet: Jumping Jack.

ivacious international model-actress Nargis Fakhri, whose movie ‘Main Tera Hero’ (MTH) opposite Varun Dhawan ('Student of the Year') releases today, has her shooting ‘dates’ committed for her Hollywood movie directed by Paul Feig, where she plays a secret agent. The spunky, outspoken actress who was recently in the news for her bold, bohemian comments on Karan Johar’s chat show ‘Koffee with Karan’, feels that MTH, directed by David Dhawan, will showcase her flair for comedy. Gushes Nargis, “It’s an honour to work with David-sir and Ekta Kapoor. I play this filthy rich pampered protected daughter of an underworld don.” It may be recalled that Nargis had also played a live-wire media reporter opposite John Abraham in the critically acclaimed movie ‘Madras Café’. Meanwhile her detractors have alleged that the feisty Fakhri, having shifted focus to her overseas project, is now “unavailable” for the local MTH promotions. Refuting the charges, she counters, “That’s not true. I have already participated in a string of promotional events.” Nargis insists she enjoys the support of her co-stars, despite all the media hype. “They are all aware that the Hollywood project is an awesome opportunity for me and they are not peeved, as is made out to be.” Once she returns to Bollywood, she says, “I would be negotiating more Hindi movie offers.” She feels that the ongoing T-20 World Cup cricket matches may not really prove to be a ‘spoil-sport’ in snatching away theatre audiences. “Its only a few hours on certain days. Movie-buffs who are hooked on to David Dhawan’s brand of l-O-l comedy, will certainly check out MTH playing on the big screen-pitch,” she signs off with a repartee in her foreign accent.

Is it true that Rajesh Khanna was your childhood buddy and it was he who coaxed you into becoming an actor? Rajesh Khanna and I lived in the same area of Bombay (now Mumbai). Goa to host Suchitra Sen film festival P

ANAJI: The Entertainment Society of Goa is set to pay tribute to legendary Bengali actress Suchitra Sen by hosting a three-day film festival next week. Suchitra Sen film festival, kickstarting from April 11 at Maquinez Palace, will present the classics including 'Harano Sur', 'Bombai Ka Babu', 'Aatmiyo Swajan', 'Aandhi', 'Guerrilla' and 'Lal Tip'. Sen, 82, who was also called Bengal's Greta Garbo, died in Kolkata early this year. The actress began her career with the Bengali film 'Shesh Kothay' in 1952 and is known for her role in Bimal Roy's 'Devdas' (1955) and 'Aandhi' (1975). This film festival is a tribute to the actress who, in 26 years of her career, acted in 61 films. The screening of the film will be free of cost.

t took Akilesh Jadhav a year after her graduated to realise his true calling: filmmaking. His big break came when cowrote Anurag Kashyap's ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’. He is now set with his directorial debut ‘Mastram’, India’s first fictional biographic film. Mastram is India’s legendary erotica writer whose works transcend decades. Presented by Sunil Bohra, produced by Ajay Rai and Sanjeev Pal Singh, the film is making headlines for being India’s first film to trace the life and journey of India’s first ‘erotica’ writer. This widely anticipated film stars Rahul Bagga and Tara Berry

Jaiswal’s sneak preview on ‘Mastram’ among others. Akhilesh gives us a nice comprehensive brief on the film: Rajaram, a bank clerk in a small town, dreams of becoming a reputed writer. No one takes his litterateur aspirations seriously. Least of all his uncle who marries him off to the beautiful Renu. The simple Renu wholeheartedly supports her husband’s ambition. Encouraged by her, Rajaram starts stealing writing time from his humdrum work routine. He eventually leaves his job when his boss publicly derides his fancy aspirations. To his surprise, Renu supports his decision and starts working odd jobs from home allowing him to to focus on his writing. But being a stay-at-home writer doesn’t go down well with prying

neighbours who are quick to pass judgment. Turning a deaf ear to the snubs, Rajaram earnestly shows his work to several publishers. They reject him saying he should stick to writing textbooks and give up these fanciful ideas of writing a novel. Finally, Rajaram encounters a fledgling publisher duo – Purohit and his brother-in-law, Bharti. They agree to publish his story on the plight of a small town girl. There is one hitch. Rajaram would have to add some sensational elements to his dull tale – some 'masala', the publishers say. Rajaram is miffed, unsure what it means to bring ‘masala’ to his writing...until he meets Chacha, an eccentric, old village Idiot. Chacha is an anomaly society – he is unashamed of showing Ra-

jaram the spicy side of life. He unabashedly introduces Rajaram to the salacious and secret world of soft pornography. Rajaram, scandalised at first, accedes to the “compromise”, and thus starts discovering another facet of literature – erotica. He adopts the pseudonym 'Mastram' authors the first pornographic novel series in Hindi. He churns out colorful stories about sex that eager readers voraciously devour. Yet, Rajaram’s success eludes him, and all the glory goes to 'Mastram'. Will the “real” Mastram finally be exposed? Will Rajaram’s sudden windfall arouse suspicion in his wife? How will Rajaram face the hypocrisy of a society that secretly enjoys reading porn, but otherwise treats such matters with disdain?

he first quarter of 2014 is done with and had a mixed bag of 40 odd films in various genres and styles. The one film that dominated this period was Vikas Bahl’s Queen—a surprise hit with Kangana Ranaut at its ‘hero.’ Like Kahaani and English Vinglish, two relatively recent woman-centric films, Queen did not need a hero to prop up its effervescent protagonist Rani, who mended her broken heart all on her own and emerged like a beautiful butterfly from her Rajouri cocoon. Like the other heroineled hit, Sunny Leone- starrerRagini MMS 2, Rani did not even need to take her clothes off. The housewife in English Vinglish humiliated by her husband and children for not being fluent in English became a poster girl for all housewives with low self esteem, and Rani struck a blow for all girls mistreated by their boyfriends. When Rani walked off from the cad with a spring in her step, the hearts of millions of girls like her must have soared. few awards nominations next year in the ‘negative performance’ category In the hard-hitting and realistic category, Nagesh Kukunoor’s Lakshmi got noticed, but the film about human trafficking was so raw and brutal that it put off viewers. Rajat Kapoor’s Aankhon Dekhi, got its share of appreciation, so did Dedh Ishqiya, but couldn’t attract a mass audience. The big-star film of the quarter was Salman Khan’s Jai Ho, which did make the requisite crores, yet failed to get the ecstatic response of his other blockbusters. The film that he presented, O Teri, turned out to be a total dud. This just goes to show that audiences are unpredictable and looking for something different. That’s why films like Yaariyan and Youngistan did not sink without a trace. But old-style films like Dishkiyaoon, Heartless, Karle Pyar Karle were rejected. Still, a film like Gunday, which was a tribute to eighties Bollywood found takers. Romcoms like Bewaqookiyan, Total Siyappa, Shaadi Ke Side Effects and One By Two did not do well, which again goes to show that today’s audience can’t be fooled all the time.

Nagma denies kissing, molestation incidents captured on camera! T

his actor-turned-politician is ready to contest the Lok Sabha elections 2014 on a Congress ticket from Meerut, however the recent events at rallies have left behind a bitter taste. Nagma was first grabbed and kissed forcefully by her own party member, Congress legislator Gajraj Singh and later at another rally in Meerut the 39-year-old actor was groped at a public meeting. An angry Nagma did not just slap the man, but also vowed to never return to Meerut if she was subjected to any further harassment during the election campaigns. While her party has sought extra protection for the southern star during her rallies, no action has been taken against miscreant Gajraj Singh as yet. In a turn of events, the actor has denied that she was groped or kissed during her outdoor visits for party’s campaign. This seems like a foolish move because the footage of her slapping the troublemaker had gone viral long before her latest statement. She has taken a complete U-turn and blatantly denied events that have been captured on the camera. In a television interview she said, “ No one tried to kiss me, I didn’t slap anyone either. Video doesn’t show me slapping anyone, the person tried to come close to me, I just pushed him away. Wasn’t an act of misbehaviour, he was trying to tell me something but due to the noise, I couldn’t hear him so he came closer.”

Deepika was Bhansali announcing the re- unavailable for comment. lease of their respective films ‘Shuddhi’ and ‘Bajirao Mastani’ for 25th December 2015, it is clear now that Deepika Padukone won’t be seen in both the films. Though her name had topped the list for both movies during last few weeks of all around speculation, all that her fans can now expect is that she gives a nod of approval to at least one of these two films. “It is not about just the clash, it is also about investment,” an insider adds, “Both Karan as well as Sanjay require bulk dates from their leading ladies for their respective films. One can’t expect anything less than 100 days each, considering the scale and setting of ‘Shuddhi’ and ‘Bajirao Mastani’. Padukone is currently busy with the shooting of ‘Happy New Year’ and is also committed to Imtiaz Ali’s tentatively titled ‘Window Seat’. There are also good chances of her signing up for a time travel film with Aamir Khan. She is busier than ever.” While the buzz is that she has already been signed for

evicol Se’, the item number that Kareena Kapoor performed in ‘Dabanng 2’ was supposed to be the last item song of her career but Kapoor has seemingly broken her no-item-song policy for the sake of friendship. She is known to go out on a limb for friend’s sake. When her close friend Shabina Khan asked Kareena to do an item song in ‘Gabbar’ her immediate response was to say no. “Kareena has done just 3-4 item

songs in her career, and all for friends. After the ‘Fevicol Se’ number in ‘Dabangg 2’, she is no mood get into the groove for an item number.” says a friend. But Shabina Khan who is the co-producer of ‘Gabbar’ specially requested Kareena to break her no-item policy. Says Kareena’s friend, “Bebo was also tempted because it was the ‘Gabbar’ producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali who supervised her look and presentation in the item song. And Bebo was very

impressed by what SLB achieved with Priyanka Chopra’s item song ‘Ram Chahe Leela Chahe’ in ‘Ram Leela.’ “ Interestingly, Kareena had also made a cameo appearance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s production of ‘Rowdy Rathore’ which Shabina Khan had co-produced. At that time Kareena was all set to do Sanjay Bhansali’s directorial venture ‘Ram Leela.’

Vinod Khanna finalises ‘Koyelaanchal’ look over WhatsApp I

n a career spanning close to 150 films over 45 years, 67 year old veteran actor Vinod Khanna has adopted quite a few different looks. No wonder he was in mood for some experimentation when it came to his latest outing ‘Koyelaanchal’ as well. With filmmaker Asshu Trikha detailing the character sketch of a ‘Coal Mafia King’ to him, the actor was doubly excited to adopt an altogether different look for the film. “The film is set in Jharkhand and this is the first time

ever that Khanna saab is playing a character based in the state. Moreover, it is a very substantial role, especially when compared to his recent films like ‘Dabangg 2’, ‘Ramaiya Vastavaiya’ or ‘Players’. This time round he is the central antagonist and is a driving force of the film. He wanted to get it all perfect.” informs a source. After the initial conversation with Khanna around the film and characterization, Trikha expected to meet him in person and work on his look. However, he was in for

a pleasant surprise when within just a few days of their call, he received a few pictures of his on WhatsApp. “Mr. Khanna actually got his team of stylists together and along with rest of the technical crew, he got his photo-shoot done at his own residence,” says Trikha, “Since I was out of town, he just didn’t want to wait for me to return and sent me a series of pictures via WhatsApp. I was so thrilled because as the senior-most actor in the film, he was setting a fantastic example.”

M

Dhoni faces selection dilemma as India clash with Proteas M

Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh will aim to kick out the Proteas in the semi-final.

IRPUR: They are on a high after four victories on the trot but team combination and injury to Yuvraj Singh will be a worry for India as they go into the second semifinal of the ICC World Twenty20 against a determined South Africa, here today. While the Indian team management will be hoping that Yuvraj recovers fully from his ankle injury which he sustained during a football session, selecting the final XI could be a tricky proposition for them. The dilemma facing the Indians is whether to retain Ajinkya Rahane in place of out of form Shikhar Dhawan and Mohit Sharma, who had replaced Mohammed Shami in the last match against Australia. While Dhawan is known to be destructive batsman, his form has been a big concern which may prompt the team management to retain Rahane. However, if Yuvraj does not recover fully, both Rahane and Dhawan are likely to be in the playing eleven in such a scenario. While skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni will wish that senior pro Yuvraj remains fighting fit for the crucial match, the South Africans will be wary of the

quality spin attack that they will have to encounter in order to book a berth for the final. It will be a keenly-fought contest when Virat Kohli’s swagger will meet Imran Tahir’s guile and Rohit Sharma will try to douse the ‘fire’ set by Dale Steyn. If one goes by form in the tournament, India can be termed favourites on paper but a game of Twenty20 can change in a matter of three overs as Pakistan captain Mohammed Hafeez realised it the hard way. While India have had an allwin record coming into the lastfour clash, the South African team won three out of their four games, albeit in a contrasting manner. India have so far convincingly crushed some of the teams such as Australia, Pakistan and Bangladesh while registering a comfortable win against defending champions West Indies. South Africa, on the otherhand, have recorded some close victories against New Zealand, The Netherlands and England in their last three games. India would like to move on from their forgettable first two-and-a-half months of 2014 and their opponents would like to shed off their ‘chokers’ tag in this current ICC event.

tournament in which they have always qualified for the semi-finals since its inception in 2007. Hafeez, who has played 36 Tests, 146 ODIs and 58 T20 internationals, said he would be available as a player for all three formats and it was for the selectors to decide what to do. The PCB chief met with Hafeez and the head coach of the team, Moin Khan and senior cricket consultant, Zaheer Abbas to discuss the performance of the team and insiders say that both Moin and Zaheer had given a pretty negative report about Hafeez’s captaincy in the World T20.

If somebody is behind my shoulder, he can stay there: Ashwin

By Kushan Sarkar

M

IRPUR: Claiming to be at the top of his game right now, Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin today said he is not bothered by competition breathing down his neck as his endeavour is to improve himself. “To be really honest, I’ve never bothered about who’s behind my shoulder. That’s not how I play my cricket. I believe in improving every day, and I don’t say it just for the sake of it,” Ashwin replied on being asked about competition from leg-spinner Amit Mishra. “Unless you don’t keep improving, you’re not going to last the distance. You lose out. It’s pretty much like a business model, that’s how I view it. Somebody’s behind my shoulder? They can stay there. I’ll just keep doing what I do best,” he added. Having got two man-of-the-match awards in last two matches, the Tamil Nadu tweaker said that he is “at the top of his game” currently. “In the last two or three months, I feel that I’m probably at the top of my bowling game. When I reach that phase, I pretty much don’t practise at all. That’s a phase I’m in right now. The ball is landing exactly where I want it to land,” he said. Playing alongside Mahendra Singh Dhoni at Chennai Super Kings has certainly helped him as the skipper knows his style of bowling inside out. “It’s not about what I’m doing or where I’m given the ball. I’ve been playing alongside Mahi for some time, and he probably knows where to use me and where not to use me. I’m always open to bowling in any situation, so for me it doesn’t make any difference.” Talk about going into a knock-out match against South Africa tomorrow, Ashwin said pressure will be on the Proteas. “Most of these guys (Indian team) are involved in the Champions Trophy, so that’s one experience everybody can draw from. Apart from that, the one thing that the young side will have an advantage over the other teams, is that we don’t carry any baggage (of failures). We’ve not lost big competitions, there will be no scars with us. We have nothing to lose,” he said. “We never walked into this tournament as favourites, and we wouldn’t want to be tagged as favourites. We just go in and enjoy ourselves,” he added. Ashwin was asked if he believes ‘Law of Averages’ would catch up with the team after an unbeaten run in the group stage, pat came the reply, “When I was a fan, yes I believed, but not now.” Ashwin believes that there is very “little difference in quality” between the spinners across the countries but it is the mental make-up that separates the top men from the rest. “When it comes to international cricket, there’s a very small margin between the quality of spinners. Everybody’s bound to have a certain amount of quality in them. It’s all about the mental make-up of the spinner and what amount of guts he has in that particular scenario.”

And after the entertainment Signature and other drinks and a delicious dinner. Both on the track and on the lawns, there was most enjoyable happening. Chairman of the RWITC Vivek Jain observed: “It is time to stand up and cheer as we thunder past this historic landmark”. Vivek Jain: “It is not often that the Royal Western India Turf Club gets to celebrate a grand happening other than its yearly homage to the Indian Derby. So when we stumbled upon the fact that racing moved to Mahalakshmi as far back as 1883 and hence the 2013-14 season marked the 130th anniversary, it deserved to be given a special remembrance... that we run the sport of thoroughbred racing in the winter months is well known to the world, but now we are gradually but surely improving our hoof marks with a whole

UMBAI: Indian skipper Sunil Chettri is sitting pretty at the top of the table of goalscorers for I League debutants and table toppers, Bengaluru FC. Not just this, the dashing striker has the added responsibility of leading the national side even as he has proved an adept scorer. With 13 goals so far in the season for Bengaluru, Chettri also accounted for the goal in the disappointing draw against Bangladesh in a friendly in Goa recently. Indian coach Wim Koevermans said that it was time that the team stops relying only on the Indian forward and lines up the next generation players who are ready to fill in Chettri’s boots. Speaking at an interaction at the Cooperage Football Ground where he is on a visit to interact with the ‘B’ licensed coaches, he emphasised on good quality of players coming into the Indian team. “I am very happy Sunil is scoring a lot of goals, we have Robin [Singh], we also have Balwant Singh from Churchill [Brothers] who is also high on the ranking. New players are coming to the front. Sunil will not play till 70 [years of age] so there needs to be a follow up [of players]. It’s not that we totally rely on Sunil, he is a great captain for the team. There has to be a follow up, for them to be as good as Sunil,” said Koevermans. On India’s preparation for the

MADRID: Barcelona are to appeal a one-year ban on signing players imposed by FIFA for a “serious” breach of rules in the signing under-age players, the club announced on Wednesday. The sanction is related to the signing of 10 players under the age of 18 between 2009 and 2013 with football’s governing body also finding the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) guilty of improper practice. “FC Barcelona will present an appeal to FIFA and if need be will take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS),” the club said in a statement released on their website. “The club will also request precautionary measures that will preserve the rights of the club, including the incorporation of players during transfer windows.”

Pietersen looking forward to mentor future stars

MAKING HIS POINT: India coach Wim Koevermans gives advice to B-licensed coaches at the Cooperage on Thursday. Asian Games he said that he was looking forward to take India for a couple of exposure trips but didn’t have details about the countries where India would be touring. He said that currently, he is looking at players in the I League and was in touch with the I League coaches on identifying players. “I have been watching some of the I League games where we saw some players and also in the recently concluded

under 22 camp, so we have time till the end of April to see which players we put on the list for the tournament. We have to play good quality opposition matches. We will start building a team in India and then we have an exposure trip and we come back to India and then a final exposure trip before the Asian Games start,” said Koevermans. On what would be the future course of action post the 2017

under 17 World Cup would be, he said that the outcome of the tournament shouldn’t have an affect on the development of the game in the country. “Whatever is the spin-off, development to the run for 2017 should not stop after that. So we have a big event in 2017. It is really really big tournament. We are the superstars of the future. So it is a magnet for football and it brings lot of kids towards football,” he added.

Saina, Kashyap take different routes to last eight SMASH SHOW: India’s ace and eighth seed Saina Nehwal plays an overhead smash against Thailand’s Natcha Saengchote in the women’s singles second round match of the Yonex Sunrise-BWF Metlife India Open Super Series badminton champion, in New Delhi on Thursday.

EW DELHI: Indian ace Saina Nehwal and compatriot Parupalli Kashyap, won their respective women’s and men’s singles second round matches, in contrasting fashion to book berths in the quarter-finals of the US$25,000 Yonex Sunrise-BWF Metlife India Open Super Series badminton champion. London Olympics bronze medallist and eighth seed Saina, without too much of a problem, put aside Thailand’s Natcha Saengchote 21-15, 21-12 in 35 minutes, at the Siri Fort Sports Complex, here on Thursday. However, Kashyap, who had stunned sixth seed Zhengming Wang of China in the opening round on Wednesday, was engaged in a grim battle with countryman R.M.V. Gurusaidutt before pulling through at 21-15, 16-21, 21-11 in little less than an hour. Saina, playing Natcha, ranked 97 in the world, for the first time, took time to settle down. The Thai youngster did well to keep pace with the vastly experienced Indian and managed to stay close till 14-all. But once the Indian found her rhythm she dominated the proceedings and went on to close out the first game. In the second, Saina, after racing to 15-

4 lead took her foot off the pedal, but it was still sufficient for her to canter to victory. The encounter between Gopichand Badminton Academy teammates Kashyap and Gurusaidutt was a close affair. Kashyap, high on confidence began strongly and grabbed an early 7-3 advantage in the first game and the timely smashes later proved enough for him to take the first game. Guru slowed down the pace of the rallies in the second game and that allowed him to exercise more control and ultimately managed to pull away from his more illustrious opponent to take the match to the decider. However, Guru ran out of steam in the third game and Kashyap easily pocketed the match to set up a quarter-final clash with top seed Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia, who outclassed India’s Sourabh Verma 21-9, 21-6 in another second round later in the day. In the day’s other matches, Olympic champion Li Xuerui and third seed Yihan Wang were stretched to three games. Top seeded Xuerui had to come back from the loss of the first game to overcome Thailand’s Nichaon Jindapon 19-21, 21-17, 21-16.

LONDON: Kevin Pietersen said he was looking forward to sharing the benefits of his experience with international stars of the future now that his own England career had been terminated. “It is good to come to the end of an international career and help others who are the start of an international career,” Pietersen told kiaoval.com. “I won’t be forceful in my knowledge. But I’ve got experience in training, the mental preparation that goes in to making you successful — which I’ve nailed well. So it’s a case of handing over that knowledge, if someone wants it.” The 33-year-old batsman was sensationally axed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in February following the team’s 5-0 Ashes thrashing in Australia. That was despite South Africa-born Pietersen being England’s leading run-scorer across all formats and their top contributor with the bat during the Ashes debacle too.
