oday is World Cancer Day and the ADC thought about talking hope and enthusiasm among people living with this disease, instead of talking about the disease itself. Ugam, a voluntary support group formed by Childhood Cancer Survivors from the After Completion of Therapy (ACT) clinic of Tata Memorial Hospital, is organising an art festival today, where cancer patients and survivors will showcase their talents of drawing, painting, dance and music. With age being no bar, cancer patients from the ages of three to sixty are coming together to celebrate life. While some will actively participate in various workshops and events, others will be present to cheer for their friends and be a part of the fanfare. The ADC spoke to some of these bravehearts and was amazed by their unfazed spirit.

Small Wonder: For Sahemida Zaheer Ahmed, it was her courage and faith in the fact that her three-year-old baby boy Zaid would survive the 'risky' surgery for a brain tumour, that has

brought her and Zaid this far. “Six months ago, Zaid was diagnosed with a brain tumour. The doctors had told us that the surgery would be a risky one as the tumour had spread to the pituitary glands, the nerve of the eye and several other parts on the left side of his brain. They even added that even through surgery, not all of the tumour could be removed. We were worried and concerned, but did not have any other option as we could not let Zaid live with the tumour. So placing our faith in God and the doctors, we decided to go ahead with the surgery. Fortunately, the surgery went off well. While most of the tumour has been removed, the remaining has to be treated using radiation. Because of his age, the radiation has been put on hold for now,” said Sahemida. Zaid will attend the festival today and watch his friends take part in the festivities. “Ab toh chota hai toh kuch kar nahi payega, par hum jayenge (He is too young to participate, but we will be there),” said Sahemida. Hold on to hope and patience and be treated on time is Sahemida's message for cancer patients and their families.

Helpline number launched:

Recently, Kohinoor Hospital at Kurla launched India’s first live Cancer Televideo Online (CTVO) counseling service, as a public service initiative to help patients and their families deal better with cancer. This is an interactive counseling line, open to the public from Monday to Saturday between 10 am and 5 pm. For tele-counseling, one can dial 022-61166116, and for a web group chat via Google Hangout, one can connect to Cancerhopesoars.

Teen Spirit: “Mujhe painting karni hai par mere daaye haath ki ungli kaam nahi karti. Mujhse jitna hoga utna mai karungi. Mujhe painting karna acha lagta hai, (I want to paint but the fingers of my right hand don't function, But I will do whatever I can. I like to paint),” said 16-yearold Priyadarshini Swahili from Orissa, who is in Mumbai for treatment. Priyadarshini was diagnosed with a brain tumour a year ago and it was a painful time for the family. But today, after undergoing surgery and radiation, Priyadarshini sounds like a happy girl.

This woman, who faced no health issues for 60 years of her life, was suddenly diagnosed with a brain tumour three months ago, after suffering from a bout of fits. “I was shocked to hear her diagnosis but I did not let it affect me. I knew we had to fight the battle against cancer together and I knew we would win. She underwent a surgery in November and is under radiation therapy now. She is doing well and will be fine,” said Sujata's husband Chandrakant. “Cancer can be fought with timely and correct treatment along with care and love from one's family and friends. It is a battle that has to be fought with courage,” he added.

n an attempt to arrest the growth in new cases of Filaria (Elephantiasis), the health department of the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) is all set launch a Mass Drug Administration (MDA) drive at Kashigaon health post in Mira Road from February 10 to 14. Civic personnel and health workers will move from door to door distributing and administrating Diethylcarbamazine (DEC) and Albendazole tablets as per the age bracket prescription to the local populace. However, children below the age of two, pregnant women and people who are severely ill can't be administered with the drugs. Elephantiasis is caused by the nematode worm, either Wuchereria Bancrofti or Brugia Malayi and is transmitted by ubiquitous mosquitoes. “This is a curable disease and once a patient is found, we put him on a treatment of DEC," said Deputy Municipal Commissioner, Dr. Sambhaji Panpatte. This apart, the MBMC had carried out a blood sampling in affected areas during the specific time period of 9 pm to 12 am.“It is important for people to co-operate with health workers because those carrying the vector might not be aware of its presence in their blood stream,” insisted Dr. Pramod Padwal, adding that early detection and intervention is vital in eliminating new cases.

Magic or comedy?

Being a journalist is no easy job, considering there are plenty of people around just waiting to make an ass out of you. The ‘Third Generation Illusionist’ – Amey Vikas Sarang – alias ‘AVS’ tried to do exactly that to a room full of journalists and photographers at the Press Club of Mumbai on Friday. Dressed in a t-shirt, corduroy waistcoat and sports shoes too huge for comfort, Sarang attempted ‘three miraculous thrilling acts’ for the ‘audience’ in what he claimed was his effort to promote magic as an art. He

Amey Vikas Sarang aka AVS

flipped over 17 sunglasses in one minute, ‘broke’ free of nine handcuffs behind a black cloth in a minute and then ‘escaped’ after being handcuffed behind his back in 2.65 seconds. All this sounds marvellous, but for the audience who saw the chain of the handcuffs snap while they were being ‘tested for strength’, there was nothing thrilling or spectacular. If that wasn’t enough, the gentleman who was fastening the handcuffs onto Sarang’s wrists behind his back tried to prove the credibility of the prop to the audience by pushing one end of the handcuff in and trying to pull it out, expecting it to stay put. He was in for a surprise when the prop opened with ease and made a slight grating sound even after ‘clicking’ shut. If this didn’t elicit a loud enough guffaw from the audience, the fact the a representative from the Limca Book of Records was ‘witness’ to the event, with a preprepared certificate stating that Sarang had set new world records, brought on the laughs and sniggers. How in the world did they know he would be successful, even if these were records never attempted before? Also, didn’t they feel it necessary to check his props before he used them? This is perhaps why the Limca Book of World Records is nowhere close to Guinness.

What a difference a year makes!

Seems like a very long time ago, but in fact, it is less than a year since the ADC interviewed the now much “exposed” Anjali Damania and were the first to report her conversation with the a senior BJP leader who horrified her and sent her into the depths of despair with his blunt statement of the fact that politics makes very strange bed-

fellows indeed. And now, she is openly warning said BJP leader Nitin Gadkari in open forums, Aam Aadmi cap still perched firmly on her head. Damania itself has grown rapidly from underdog to, at times, blustering neta, so swiftly does politics take over the average Indian, who are probably the only people in the world born political. And as to our own opinion of AAP, we have to admit it is not as sanguine as before. Like it or lump it, we are of the opinion that the attacks on north-easterners in the capital is a fall-out of the lumpen

behavior of the law minister of Delhi towards the Ugandan women of Khirki. Suddenly it seems to be open season again on people we regard as being “not like us”. And notice how the almost daily announcements of the AAP press conferences have begun to sound like mini diktats! Example – AAP PC on important announcement 30 January. One unlamented exit

It is interesting to note that our former commissioner of police has gone out, not into the dark night of the soul but into the brazen light of UP politics, as gracelessly as he got in. Who can forget the strutting figure he cut during the hand over to Arup Patnaik, victim of lousy state politics in August 2012. He was seen as a creature of

On the flip side...

On Monday, as the country’s first monorail project took off in shiny splendour with its load of passengers from Chembur to Wadala, it was all colourfully pink- and sky blue and shiny steel, and clean platforms and a sense of adventure, as people reveled in the experience of air conditioning on local transportation. It was a holiday and everyone behaved like they were on holiday, senior citizens, happy housewives, children, all there so they could say they had been there, done that, first day, first trip, so on and so forth. If people we spoke to are to be believed, they had joined queues on Saturday night so as to be among the first on Sunday morning at 7 am. - the ticket rates varying from Rs.5 to Rs.11. Our reporter Khushboo Panjabi witnessed the fun along the way, as the train stopped at Wadala, Bhakti Park, Mysore Colony, BPCL, Fertiliser Township, VNP-RC Marg Junction and Chembur. It is supposed to do the journey in 8 minutes, but this one took 20 and no-one was complaining and even the tracts of grey-green mangroves and the generally messy landscape was charming. But there is lots that needs to be attended to, from the fact that you have to use old one rupee coins in the ticket vending machines, to the measly time allowance of 20 minutes that each ticket allows. Apparently you have to be in an out of the station in 20 minutes from the

politicians and during his tenure, there was hardly anything he accomplished that could be termed edifying, quite the opposite in fact. So we are happy that he has gone, though we are now wondering why the state government is taking days to announce the new incumbent. No matter who comes, one thing is sure. He is going to be an improvement over his predecessor. But Mumbai deserves a police commissioner as fast as possible, and why this should be do difficult for our politicians to grasp, we cannot understand.

It’s great for a ride, as this little family discovers on Sunday in the monorail segment of Mumbai’s ambitious mass transportation projects. The thing is, will it end up going nowhere as the novelty value wears off?

time you buy the ticket. Khushboo was a bit of a laggard and ended up punching out 25 minutes after she bought her ticket, after enjoying the experience and the view and making careful notes of people and places and stuff. She she tried to use her token to get out, she was rejected – and had

to pay Rs 25 as a fine. Not the best way to start a relationship with passengers. Not a friendly sort of experience, she thought. Would she be using the service No, she said determinedly. Who is going to scout around for surly taxi men at the Wadala end!

The fact that most IPS officers are due for transfers and promotions has left Mumbai waiting for the announcement of its new police commissioner, which has not taken place till now, as the Congress-NCP led government has avoided it on some pretext or the other. Several political analysts and legal experts believe the government has three important reasons which will force Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to declare the new CP as early as possible. One among the significant reasons, is the sudden exit of Satyapal Singh last week, from the post of Satyapal Singh (left) seen here receiving his bouquet when he took over from outgoing Mumbai Police Chief. Pain into poetry By Vishnudas Sheshrao

W

hile her husband stood at the border, eye-to-eye with the enemy, she struggled to put her inner turmoil down with pen and paper. She was aware that there were millions like her, whose husbands were patrolling or keeping vigil on the borders. Lt General Iqubal Singh Singha's wife Balli Singha's collection of poems 'Aagaj' was published yesterday at Sagarmatha in Colaba. Balli Singha, who witnessed the horrors of the Kargil war first hand, said, “It was very painful to see casualties being brought down from the treacherous heights. Eyes went dry. We also had to kill those militants who had infiltrated into our land. Their wives and sisters must have had to face the same trauma of war.” She added, “I put down those painful experiences and feeling onto paper as they rose in my heart.

Most of the poems are related to the border. Few are about from urban life. No need to mention the 26/11 horror, or the war on the field of cricket, etc.”

The couple from Ulhasnagar jumped in the Vashi creek on Monday morning as their marriage was not approved by the girl’s parents, since she is a minor. Find a Maratha! State government asks varsity to find out Maratha students to initiate ‘Maratha Arakshan’ By Yatin Ingle

W

ith the state government’s plan of Maratha Arakshan, reservation of seats for students belonging to the Maratha Community, there has been chaos at the Mumbai University campus. The government has MU to submit detailed information of all students belonging to the Maratha Community. As the varsity doesn’t have any documents to verify this fact, a hunting process has been launched to search students from this community.

In December 2013, the demand for inclusion of Maratha community into Other Backward Class (OBC) category reached the educational fields. After which, the state higher education department asked universities in the state to compile data related to Maratha students as per orders issued by the state General Administration Department. The state government has already constituted a committee headed by Industries Minister Narayan Rane to look into the demand for Maratha reservation. As this community was earlier included in the open category, college and varsities do not carry any specific documents to find students belonging to it. The MU has now asked students of this community to submit their documentations for verification. Mahadeo Jagtap, senate member, MU said, “The varsity should carry a separate category for Marathas, Jains and other communities so that it is easier for them to verify the documents”. The varsity’s admission form is in a format that only has options for reserved categories of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes and Nomadic Tribes, whereas any other community is considered as an open category without any specifications of the caste or community. M.A. Khan, Registrar, MU said, “The process has increased the work for varsity officials as well as the students. We have to ask students to submit their documents and the varsity will have to verify these documents to forward it to the government”.

Raj venting frustration at BJP, says Fadnavis

Afternoon Despatch & Courier

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2014

By Prashant Hamine

S

tate BJP president Devendra Fadnavis yesterday remarked that Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray was lashing out at BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi out of frustration as the political space he was eyeing for is now being occupied by the BJP. Speaking to newspersons here at the state party office, he stated that the MNS chief by no stretch of imagination can become an alternative to the

UPA as it is the NDA which is the alternative. In a sarcastic remark, Fadnavis added that when the late Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray was alive, the MNS chief chose to give the late Sena chief more pain. After netting former Mumbai Police Commissioner Dr Satyapal Singh in the party, the state BJP president dropped another bombshell by claiming that the party was in touch with another former bureaucrat from the state cadre. Refusing to reveal the identity of the former IAS officer, he said that

the bureaucrat in his serving days was considered to be non-controversial, non-corrupt and well known for his upright behavior. Commenting upon the MNS chief’s remark about Modi not making reference to the late Sena chief in his speeches when in the state, the state BJP president disclosed that Modi has been in constant touch with Sena president Uddhav Thackeray. Party president Rajnath Singh during the Mahagarjana rally at BKC had made reference to the late Sena

After Satyapal Singh, BJP in bid to rope another former bureaucrat chief. Fadnavis termed late Sena chief Bal Thackeray as the father figure of the NDA. He said that there was double anti-incumbency wave in the state, one against the central government and another against the state government. The 2009 election gambit of the ruling Congress-NCP alliance of splitting the antiincumbency vote with the help of MNS has now failed as the BJP led NDA has occupied the MNS space. Besides that Modi has stopped the shift of anti-incumbency vote to the MNS.

opened, there will be a lot of built, it will be a better idea vehicles on the road. If a fly- and will help to reduce over bypassing the city is traffic.” CIDCO has offered 22.5 per cent of the developed land to the villagers, out of which there are six villages that are still opposing the offer. Due to the delay in the clearance process of land, the estimated cost of the project has risen by

305.76 per cent. The initial cost was estimated to be Rs. 4,766 crore in 1998 with an estimated 40 million passengers. This has gone up to around Rs. 14,573 crore with an expected footfall of 60 million per year.

The proposal will be taken to the chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and will be discussed with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). DO’S & DON’TS Continued from pg 1 « poll promises like subsidised power, cheap food grains, free tablet PCs and other such sops. The ECI has in its letter dated January 31, which was released yesterday addressed to political parties and contesting candidates, laid down the following draft guidelines while releasing election manifestos: “the election manifesto shall not contain anything repugnant to the ideals and principles enshrined in the Constitution and further that it shall be consistent with the letter and spirit of other provisions of Model Code of Conduct”. “The Directive Principles of State Policy enshrined in the Constitution enjoin upon the State to frame various welfare measures for the citizens and therefore there can be no objection to the promise of such welfare measures in election manifestos. However, political parties should avoid making those promises which are likely to vitiate the purity of the election process or exert undue influence on voters in exercising their franchise.” “In the interest of transparency, level playing field and credibility of promises, it is expected that manifestos also reflect the rationale for the promises and the ways and means to meet the financial requirements for it. Trust

of voters should be sought only on those promises which are possible to be fulfilled.” The Supreme Court of India while giving its judgement in the S. Subramaniam Balaji versus government of Tamil Nadu and others had directed the ECI to frame set of draft guidelines on election manifestos. Following which the ECI had called representatives of all the political parties for consultations on August 12, 2013. The ECI had invited national and state political parties to offer their comments and suggestions by February 7, after which the Commission will finalise the guidelines which will then become part of the Model Code of Conduct. The Apex Court in its judgment had observed “the reality cannot be ruled out that distribution of freebies of any kind, undoubtedly, influence all people. It shakes the root of free and fair elections to a large degree”. The judgment further states “we are mindful of the fact that generally political parties release their election manifestos before the announcement of election date, in that scenario, strictly speaking, the Election Commission will not have the authority to regulate any act which is done before the announcement of the date. Nevertheless, an exception can be made in this regard as the purpose of election manifesto is directly associated with the election process”.

Ponder awhile... “When we are sick, we want an uncommon doctor; when we have a construction job to do, we want an uncommon engineer, and when we are at war, we want an uncommon general. It is only when we get into politics that we are satisfied with the common man.” — Herbert Hoover

Can AAP survive? A

AP chief Arvind Kejriwal has expelled one of his party MLAs — Vinod Kumar Binny. His party now has 27 members in the Delhi assembly. With 8 Congress MLAs and one JD(U) member, he still manages a majority in the house. The big question now is whether the AAP, which finds itself in a precarious position, be able to maintain the majority and continue in power. There is little doubt that enemies of the AAP are making efforts to bring about the collapse of the party: The BJP has, Arvind Kejriwal alleges, offered a sum of Rs. 30 crore to one of the AAP MLAs if he could induce nine members of the party to join it. It looks like there certainly are some ‘dishonest and corrupt’ persons in the AAP. It would be difficult for them to overcome temptation and refuse the big offer. The BJP wants power and hence it has asked for support of 9 AAP MLAs. If however it just wants to end the government, all that it has to do is to get one AAP MLA leave the party. There is every possibility of this happening. Apart from the BJP, the expelled MLA is threatening to bring about the collapse of the AAP government. The fact is it should not be difficult to get an AAP MLA quit the party. The AAP MLAs are not so many paragons of honesty. If AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal thinks all his party folk are above corruption, he is mistaken. It is not just offer of money that makes them quit. Take the case of Vinod Kumar Binny: He wanted a ticket for the Lok Sabha poll. For some reason known only to him, Kejriwal refused to consider him as good enough for a seat in the Lok Sabha. Other AAP members may have their own grouses and may make life difficult for Kejriwal. What is to be noted is that the love JD(U) member who has joined AAP can topple the government any time he wants to. He does not have to bother about the JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar if he accepts a big offer from the BJP and quits. It will be very difficult for him to refuse an offer of Rs. five crore from the BJP.

RESIDENT Pranab Mukherjee has been making speeches verging on politics from Day One. He has been commenting on the problems confronting the nation as if he is presiding over the affairs of the country. His Republic Day broadcast beats them all and has naturally evoked some angry comments. Several political parties like the Communist Party of India (CPI) have characterised the speech as political. What President Mukherjee says is generally correct. For example, his remarks that populist anarchy is no substitute for governance or that there is a rising trend of hypocrisy in public life are correct. But he forgets that he is only a constitutional head and has to observe the decorum which the elected parliament and state legislatures expect from a person who occupies that position. No doubt, he finds politics a familiar turf but he left it when he was elected President. His grievance with Congress president Sonia Gandhi may be genuine. But that is between her and him. The nation is not concerned with what goes on in a political party.

nath Bharti. But Chief Minister Kejriwal has set a bad precedent by letting his Law Minister off the hook. He should have left it to the state chief secretary to deal with the “defiance” by the police officials. His defence is that he did not violate the Constitution. It is a strange logic when he threw to the wind the very letter and the spirit of the Constitution which has given all powers to the executive of which he is only a figurehead. The chief minister’s defence that his dharna was not unconstitutional does not wash. He does not realise that the middle class, his forte, wants an orderly administration and feels let down over the tactics like dharna by the state chief minister. But why should President Mukherjee comment on political matters is really beyond me. President Mukherjee’s comment that the “government is not a charity shop” is criticism of the promises that the government

Pranab’s political ambitions axed Mukherjee would have been a natural successor after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh steps down. Precisely this is the reason why a person who had wide contacts was kicked upstairs. Sonia Gandhi’s determination to make her son, Rahul Gandhi, the Prime Minister came in the way of Mukherjee’s political ambitions. It was up to Mukherjee not to accept the post of President. But when he announced that he would not contest in the 2014 election, it became clear that he was exasperated, waiting in the wings. Sonia Gandhi readily accepted the position because he had himself cleared the deck for Rahul Gandhi. Mukjerjee had taken it for granted that the key role he had portrayed as a fire fighter during the troubled times that he could not be ignored for having served the dynasty relentlessly. Unfortunately, Mukherjee has not adjusted himself to the institution of President. He should refrain from making such remarks which he could do so as a politician. I have not liked the dharna by Aam Aadmi Party’s chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on the demand of transferring two police officials who had reportedly insulted his Law Minister Som-

BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar makes to draw the electoral support. All political parties do so. Mukherjee was in the cabinet of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi when she raised the slogan of Garibi Hatao. The Manmohan Singh government has doled out favours to the DMK to sustain its support. It is an open secret how the CBI case against Mulayam Singh Yadav was withdrawn to get his party’s support. Mukherjee was part of the government when there was a quid pro quo to save Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government from falling. If President Mukherjee felt so strongly, as his criticism indicates, why did he not speak out at that time? His opposition would have meted because he was a senior leader.

The talent of creating wealth A

ll the religions have been against wealth because wealth can give you all that can be purchased in life. And almost everything can be purchased except those spiritual values – love, compassion, enlightenment, freedom. But these few things are exceptions, and exceptions always prove the rule. Everything else you can purchase with money. Because all the religions have been against life, they were bound to be against money. That is a natural corollary. Life needs money because life needs comforts, life needs good food, life needs good clothes, good houses. Life needs beautiful literature, music, art, poetry. Life is vast! And a man who cannot understand classical music is poor. He is deaf. He may hear – his eyes, his ears, his nose, all his senses will be perfectly right medically – but metaphysically…. Can you see the beauty of great literature, like The Book of Mirdad? If you cannot see it, you are blind. I have come across people who have not even heard the name of The Book of Mirdad. If I am to make a list of the great books, that will be the first. But to see the beauty of it you will need a tremendous discipline. To understand classical music is possible only if you learn – and it is a long learning. It

is not like jazz music, for which no learning is needed. Even monkeys can understand jazz – in fact, only monkeys understand it. It is not music, just a few crackpots making all kinds of noises, and you think it is music. You will find better music in a waterfall, or when the wind blows through the pine trees, or simply when you walk in the forest in autumn on dry leaves, and sounds are created. But to understand that, you will need to be free from hunger, free from poverty, free from all kinds of prejudices. For example, Mohammedans have prohibited music; now they have deprived man of a tremendous experience. It happened in New Delhi… one of the most powerful Mohammedan emperors, Aurangzeb, was on the throne. And he was not only powerful, he was really terrible. Up to his time Mohammedan emperors were saying only that music was against Islam, but that was all; Delhi was full of musicians. But Aurangzeb was not a gentleman, he was really a Mohammedan. He declared that if any music was heard in Delhi, the musician would be immediately beheaded. And Delhi was the centre, naturally, because it was the capital for thousands of years. So it was the place where all kinds of geniuses were living.

For example, his recovery of tax retrospectively dried up foreign investment. As Finance Minister, he should have anticipated the adverse effect his decision would have on investment. Even today when reasons for stagnation are adumbrated, Mukherjee’s name is mentioned repeatedly. He lives in the luxury of Rashtrapati Bhavan while the nation is paying the price for his follies. Mukherjee was a minister when Mrs Gandhi had stopped sending any paper to the then President Giani Zail Singh who differed with her on Punjab. What Mrs Gandhi did was a violation of the Constitution. I wish Mukherjee had raised his voice then. The office of President is an institution which should not be disfigured. Yet the political leaders do that. That Mukherjee should also be doing so is a sad commentary on his sagacity and those like him.

Morality was banished from politics Yet another example is that Mukherjee’s silence when Mrs Gandhi imposed the Emergency in 1975. She delivered a severe blow to the institutions which her father, Jawaharlal Nehru, had fostered. Mukherjee was then a close collaborator of Sanjay Gandhi, an extra constitutional authority. The worst aspect of the Emergency was that morality was banished from politics. There was fear which made the then President, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, to sign the proclamation even before the cabinet gave its approval. My experience is that a Prime Minister pays scant attention to a President. The Constitution framers, who preferred parliamentary democracy to presidential form of government, have laid down what the President can do. But this has been nullified over the years because the Congress takes the President’s wishes for granted. By making political speeches, the occupant of Rashtrapati Bhavan only aggravates the problem. There is a very thin line dividing the right and the wrong, moral and immoral. Institutions are ought to protect that line. It is easy to say from the pulpit that such and such thing is dangerous to the country. However correct President Mukherjee’s observations may be, he should introspect whether what he did as a cabinet minister was correct, not only legally but also morally. The ball is in his court. When this declaration was made, all the musicians gathered together, and they said, “Something has to be done, this is too much! They used to say it is against Islam – that was okay. But this man is dangerous, he will start killing.” So as a protest, all the musicians – of which there were thousands – went to Aurangzeb’s palace. He came on the balcony and asked the people, “Who has died?” – because what they had done… they were carrying a corpse the way it is carried in India. There was no corpse inside, just pillows, but they had managed to make it look like a corpse. Aurangzeb asked, “Who has died?” And they answered, “Music. And you are the murderer of it.” Aurangzeb said, “Good that it has died. Now please be kind enough to me – dig as deep a grave as possible, so that it can never come out from the grave again.” Those thousands of musicians and their tears had no effect on Aurangzeb: he was doing something `sacred’. Music is denied by Mohammedans. Why? – because music was basically played in the East by beautiful women. In the East and in the West the meaning of the word ‘prostitute’ differs. In the West the prostitute is selling her body. In the East, in the past, the prostitute was not selling her body; she was selling her genius, her dance, her music, her art. — Osho

Alas, Dhoni has lost his fiery spirit WINNING home series was the only object for Team India ever since M.S. Dhoni took over as captain from Anil Kumble. Now he is totally exposed as two consecutive series were lost because of the substandard performances. The rag, tag, bobtail outfit is not able to avoid defeat. But we were praising Team India too much for their triumphs at home and the players were y were enough endorsements for the show in our backyard. TOURING teams going on an overseas tour generally plan well before disembarking on a tour. But Team India did not do their home work well and the captain now blames the bowlers, spineless batting and an ordinary fielding display. The extravaganza called IPL is killing the game in India and playing spoilsport in the performances of the players. The much talked about bench strength when we play at home came cropper with even the main players going to the benches. We should have analysed the pros and cons even before the start of the tour. For the most timid display, the captain is solely responsible. Unless he leads from the front, the situation will go from bad to worse. As a batsman he should high up in the batting order as Alstair Cook (England), Graeme Smith (South Africa) and Michael Clarke (Australia) do for their respective countries. Winning is a habit and the team should have a motive to win matches rather than women are to be blamed for rise in the number of rape because of their clothes, behavior and their being at inappropriate places is utter nonsense, rubbish, disgraceful and shameful. The urgent need of the hour is that LETTER OF THE DAY everybody must condemn her statement and she should be removed from her post with immediate effect from the Maharashtra Women's Commission for insulting the women across the country. It is high time the NCP chief, Sharad Pawar if he has any respect for women, must remove her from her post without any further delay which should be very strong lesson for others who considered women as an 'item' rather than a human being.

BY failing regularly against a pace attack we have given an advantage to the opposition as fast bowling dominates the world of cricket. Both MRF and NCA are not able to produce a genuine quick bowler. Fast bowlers generally hunt in pairs. As we do not have one at our disposal, chances of getting another one in the near future is ruled out. With the result we lack in having sound opening batsmen to counter the pace and bounce of the wicket overseas. There is no scope for improving fast bowling as the wickets in India are slow. Thus we find it difficult to retaliate and attack from both the ends. Our defensive approach to the hit and run game of cricket is giving us a nightmarish experience after a tour overseas. shed thOse KiLOs If you think that only sipping on endless cups of tea is actually going to help you shed all the extra kilos you want to lose — it is not going to happen. However, tea helps with a lot of other procedures that speed up the process of weight loss. Couple these suggestions with a healthy and balanced workout and it is sure to have results. Firstly, although triglycerides are necessary, excessive presence of triglycerides eventually turns into fat and leads to obesity. Green tea contains polyphenols which activate a certain enzyme in the body that helps dissolve excess triglycerides. Also, the presence of catechin in green tea stimulates your muscle cells and liver to use more fatty acids. As a result, your body uses lesser carbohydrates. With more carbohydrates at your body’s disposal, you can exercise for a longer period of time, which in turn will help you burn more calories. Also, an interesting Japanese study, published in the journal Nutrition reveals that tea contains high levels of certain compounds that prevent the absorption of fat. It found that these compounds, called theaflavins and thearubigins stopped rats from putting on weight when they were fed a diet rich in fat. However, the catch is that when served with milk, the effect by the protein found in milk.

KeeP caLM & drinK tea If you often suffer from bouts of anxiety or the occasional stressful day at work is playing havoc with your life, tea can come to your rescue. Different blends of tea work wonders when it comes to calming you down and helping you regain control when faced with stressful situations. Chamomile and lavender are probably the two most relaxing herbs around. So, it is no surprise that chamomile and lavender tea help calm you down as well. In a study published in the journal Phytomedicine, lavender oil was found to be equally effective as lorazepam (Ativan). Therefore, a cup of lavender tea is great to calm you on a tiring day and studies show, that it especially helps in reducing anxiety in women. Ashwagandha, (an Indian herb that is now popular overseas as well), when brewed with tea can help you calm down. For thousands of years, Ashwagandha has been known for its properties that help clear the mind, treat hypertension, stress and even nervous exhaustion. So, the next time your day seems to be down in the dumps, brew a cup of ashwagandha tea instead of losing your marbles. The Valerian root — if you can get hold of it — is also a great calming agent. GOING SUGAR-FREE

Planning on cutting sugar and sugary snacks out of your diet for good? Before you take such a drastic step for your health, Rhea Dhanbhoora suggests you read this to stay informed >> Cakes, cookies and delicious desserts all contain a lot of refined sugar, so it’s a good idea to cut back on your consumption of them

G

iving up sugar is the latest trend, but should you really cut it out of your diet completely? Cassie Platt, author of Don’t Quit Sugar, makes a strong case for sugar as she details her experience of quitting sugar, telling readers how you begin to feel after the ‘honeymoon’ phase of quitting has ended. But, on the other hand, the popular book I Quit Sugar, tells you the opposite. So, who do you believe? The reason that sugar is so unhealthy is because white sugar is highly processed and refined. It works just like any other processed food or fat, with empty calories that you’re consuming adding to your waistline and ruining your health. But, simply cutting out sugar won’t help, since most things we eat and drink contain this anyway. Also, a lot of ‘sugar free’ foods are as unhealthy! While we’re not going to tell you to quit the sweet stuff completely, cut out unhealthy processed sugars and try more natural alternatives instead. To work towards a healthier you, begin to reduce the amount of sugar you consume instead of banning it from your diet completely.

and drinks earlier rather than later. It weakens your blood: Sugar not only causes cellulite and makes you fat (thanks to all the empty calories) it also makes your blood weaker, which is not good for your health in the long run. It damages your teeth & bones: Not only will sugar make your dental work go for a toss and cause tooth decay, it can also cause bone loss! It’s best to avoid eating too much of it if you want to stay healthy.

The debaTe With all those disadvantages, sugar has gotten a really bad name. But, there’s still a lot of debate about cutting it out completely. Several researchers, along with author Cassie Platt, suggest that it only becomes unhealthy when you have too much of it. So, a little sugar now and >>There’s no need to go to such extremes, but reduce the amount of sugar you eat

The bad news

Wonder why everyone is so angry with the sweet white powder we love so much? Take a look at why sugar is bad for you: It suppresses your immune system: While sugar alone is not responsible for this, like anything that’s not good for your body, it does play a pretty major role. It can depress you: Sugar blocks the happy chemicals from entering your brain, making you sluggish and in the long run, depressed and frustrated. It also causes an imbalance in your mood, giving you crazy mood swings that you wouldn’t experience on a healthier diet. You’ll suffer from inflammation: Too many sugary foods can actually cause inflammation, which can lead to numerous diseases. It’s also a culprit of early ageing. It causes diabetes: This is not a surprise, but you should make note of it anyway. In order to avoid the risk of developing diabetes (whether it’s genetic or not), you should begin to cut down on sugary foods

then won’t do you any harm — there’s no need to go cold turkey. Natural sugars are fine, start by cutting down on the refined variety first.

The alTernaTIves There are several alternatives to refined sugar, so you don’t have to have your tea and coffee without it or make a bitter cake! Try having coconut sugar since it’s touted as much healthier than regular sugar. You can also use raw honey (in moderation) and maple syrup to sweeten your dishes.

« KNOW MORE: ANJALI MUKERJEE’S HOME DELIVERED HEALTH PROGRAM Anjali Mukerjee’s Health Total has introduced a new health program which offers those who are too busy to head to the gym the chance to control their health from the comfort of their home. Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you more

W

ith our busy lives, it’s understandable if you don’t really have the time to invest in a full-time weight loss program. After all, staying fit and healthy takes up a lot of time — you have to switch your diet around, get into a good exercise routine and change your food according to your nutritional needs. If you’ve got a 9-5 job, this is probably a retirement-ready dream. But, there’s another way to make sure you can take care of yourself, without losing your mind or your job. Perfect for busy parents, college students

on project deadlines and the average busybee workaholic, Anjali Mukerjee’s new Health Total Do @ Home program is a great place to start. The M.D. (A.M) nutritionist, researcher, columnist, author, co-founder and director of Health Total has several successful health centres around the city, but she’s now introduced a program that’s designed exclusively for those who can’t make it to the health centres. There’s a set of diet plans, plant extracts, health foods and specific instructions as part of the weight loss kit,

which is delivered right to your doorstep. The best part about this is that doctors and nutritionists from Health Total monitor your progress through email and on the phone on a weekly basis to make sure that you are following it to the T. And if you don’t need it for weight loss, you can get packages for diabetes or cholesterol. Basically whatever you need. Dr. Anjali tells us, “We received a lot of enquiries from places where we did not have our centers. Also, clients did not have time to

visit our centers as frequently due to hectic lifestyles. It was for this demographic in particular that we designed the Do @ Home program. Maintaining an ideal weight is a lifetime commitment and not a short-term affair. A healthy lifestyle and regular food habits will help you to stay fit forever. Short term weight loss quick-fixes cannot sustain health.” We agree, so get in touch with them to get started! * Log on to www.health-total.com to get started

Anxious much?

G

>> If you feel nervous and anxious every time you have to speak in front of an audience, you may suffer from social anxiety

>> Hiding and closing yourself away from love can reveal that you’re emotionally unavailable

Images Shutterstock

Like it or not, you may be missing out on a lot of opportunities to grow and have fun simply because you suffer from social anxiety. Read on to find out if you’re falling prey to the disorder, says Shirley Mistry

« 10 Ways to Know:

2

EMOTIONAL You’re really Happy LOCKDOWN

If someone was to ask you “Are you happy?” what do you think your answer would be? While people’s parameters for happiness may vary, there are some ways to know if you’re really happy. Priyanka Singh tells you about them

Would you be comfortable dancing or enacting a play in front of an audience? a) Yes. I don’t see why not. b) No way. I don’t want to have a hundred people watch as I trip on stage.

Would you rather eat lunch at your desk at work or eat with your colleagues at the cafeteria? a) I stare at my computer eight hours a day. Anything to talk to another human being. b) I like my desk. Plus, it saves time too.

If you get an invite for a party only a few hours before it is scheduled to start, what would you do? a) Figure out what I’m going to be wearing and who’s going to be at the party as well. b) Make an excuse and say no.

heAlthy relAtionships We are talking about not just having a healthy relationship with your better half, but also about the people who are close to you. Being able to maintain healthy social relationships is also a sign of being happy with yourself.

You think it is best to avoid getting into a new relationship because eventually you will get cheated/ hurt. a. Yes. b. No. You prefer emailing or texting the significant people in your life even when something

If you make a mistake during a performance or presentation how does it make you feel? a) I laugh it off and move on with life. b) I end up thinking about it all through the night and for weeks to come. What is your first thought when a friend invites you to a party to introduce you to some of her new friends? a) Sure! Why not? It’s always fun to meet new people. b) I’d choose a root canal over having to get to know a whole bunch of strangers.

live in the MoMent Living in the moment and not letting negative thoughts dwell at the back of your mind is another sign of you being happy. If you savour the moment you are in without anything badgering your sub-conscious, it means that you have actually lived that moment. People who can do this successfully are evidently happier.

your glAss is hAlf full When you’re happy, you want nothing to stop your feel-good endorphins. So, when life throws a lemon at you, you make lemonade. If there’s something wrong, you try hard to make it better and ensure that you are maintaining your happiness equilibrium rather than whining.

When your boyfriend/ girlfriend wants to introduce you to his/ her parents, you go white as a sheet. a. Yes. b. No.

4

3

5 i’M so hAppy for you Everyone feels happy with their personal achievements, but you have started revelling in the successes of others too. Feeling happy for others indicates that you are content with your own life. Rejoicing for other people multiplies your celebrations.

Mostly As Unfortunately, you are definitely emotionally unavailable. Things that indicate stability in relationships, such as a long term commitment or meeting the parents/ telling someone you love them, scare you because you aren’t ready to accept emotions that are so strong and move towards something concrete. We suggest you open up a little and have more faith in yourself and the people who love you.

1

the little things Little things cheer you up. Something as simple as the radio playing your favourite song is enough for you to start your day on a great note. In fact, you’re thankful for all the little things that went well during the day. Studies show that gratitude is a key component of feeling extremely happy.

9

8 you hAve A sister! Yes, you read that right! You may think that there’s no way that your younger or older sister can influence your happiness, but research presented by University of Ulster begs to differ. This study, that came out in 2011, showed that having at least one female sibling made both young men and women talk more effectively and maintain an optimistic outlook.

you know how to Be cAlM When problems occur or there’s a situation that can make you depressed, you know how to calm yourself down and try to look beyond it. The problem doesn’t take over your life. Whether it is doing yoga, going for a walk, or just zoning out for a while — you’ve figured what makes you calm and you practice it to get over this episode. You choose to be happy rather than wallowing in grief.

Mostly Bs You, my friend, need some help, because you definitely suffer from social anxiety. You lack faith in yourself and in the things you say or do. More often than not, you doubt yourself instead of trusting your instincts. Also, meeting new people isn’t your idea of fun by any stretch of the imagination. You need to understand that you are only human. It is detrimental to your self-esteem and self-worth if you constantly blame yourself for minor mistakes and keep thinking of them over and over again. Get a grip on your life and open up a little — we promise it will do you a world of good.

ou may feel like you are the only one suffering from social anxiety, but there are thousands of people who suffer from it. Although you feel that this behaviour is ingrained in you, there are things you can do to bring about a change in the way you react to situations. Most people suffering from this disorder experience anxiety in these situations: l Having to make a phone call to a stranger. l Making small talk. l Eating or drinking in public. l Attending parties, weddings and celebrations. l Undergoing good-natured ribbing. l Being the centre of attention. l Being watched while doing any task. l Going on a date. l Voicing opinions in a meeting. l Using a public restroom. l Feeling like everyone is criticising or judging you.

Commitment to a partner bothers you. a. Yes. b. No.

Mostly As You seem to have nothing to worry about, as you are comfortable in most social situations. You are confident of yourself and can take things in your stride. You have high self-esteem and love embracing new opportunities and people with open arms. Even if you do slip-up here and there, you don’t beat yourself over it and emerge from the situation stronger. Keep it up!

important happens, because you find actual conversations awkward and pointless. a. Yes. b. No.

Mostly Bs You seem to be in a place in your life where the strength of the emotions you feel doesn’t scare you. You are accepting of situations and trust yourself and the people you surround yourself with. You are in control of your emotions and do a great job of expressing them to the people who matter.

you look greAt todAy When you’re happy and feel good, you want to spread the cheer and want other people around you to feel happy too. So, whether it is about paying someone a compliment or being kind to someone, it all comes back to the positive feeling within you. In fact, studies have shown that being kind to others can actually help increase your overall happiness levels.

When you are a part of a discussion, do you constantly feel like people are ridiculing you in their head? a) Never. Why would they? b) I’m pretty sure they are. The words sounded so much better in my head.

it’s nothing It has become all about focussing on the right things in life. Somebody accidentally stepped on your toe? Spilt your coffee? Do you say “It’s okay”? Congratulations, as you’ve realised that it’s futile wasting your energy and spoiling your day over such minor mistakes.

Being emotionally unavailable is detrimental to existing relationships and ruins your chances of discovering new, meaningful ones, says Shirley Mistry You hesitate to tell your loved ones how much you love them and how much they matter to you. a. Yes. b. No.

How do you feel when your boss or teacher publicly commends you for the good work you have done? a) Amazing. It is great to be acknowledged for your work. b) This is so embarrassing. Couldn’t he have sent me an email instead? I’m sure everyone hates me now.

etting clammy just before you are to perform on stage or having a bout of nervous jitters before an important exam is completely normal. However, if you find yourself, or a friend, in a state where every social situation or interaction is met with severe anxiety, it is possible that social anxiety disorder is to blame. Social anxiety goes far beyond the initial shyness you feel while meeting someone new, or a case of nerves before you go for that all important job interview. Take this quiz to find out if you suffer from social anxiety.

10

no longer MAteriAlistic Instead of chasing material possessions, you chase fulfilling experiences and relationships. Recent research suggests that people who pursue material goods — as opposed to the pursuit of emotional fulfilment — tend to be less satisfied and express fewer positive emotions each day.

Even if you suffer from social anxiety, there is so much you can do to modify your behaviour and cope with the condition. Take a look at our tips to find your way out of social anxiety. Acknowledge it: Anxiety or fear is your body’s way of reacting to anything that seems risky or dangerous. It is the adrenaline in your body that takes the shape of anxiety or fear. Also, in many cases, anxiety runs in the family. There is nothing you can do about it. Understanding that it is natural to feel anxious is the first step towards improving. go through with it: Trust us when we say that some things are worth being anxious over. Once you take a step forward you may find yourself with newer friends or life changing opportunities. Always think of the benefits that exist beyond your anxiety and take the plunge. Also, once you overcome your fear the first few times, you will find yourself feeling less anxious and more in control of your emotions. distrAct yourself: Whenever you feel anxious, instead of focusing on your sweaty palms, focus only on getting the task done. If you are at a party talking to someone new, focus on what the person is saying instead of wondering what you should say next. BreAthe: Deep breathing helps with social anxiety. Practice deep breathing until you can slow down to eight deep breathes a minute under normal situations. Then, the next time you feel anxious, breathe as deeply as you can and channel your energy on controlling your breathing. Slowly, the anxiety will subside.

how you feel sluggish and unproductive when you’re really tired? If you don’t want to feel dull and want your focus to improve, you should stay active. This is especially important as you get older.

Helps you in bed We don’t mean it gets you to sleep faster — although it does do that too. Exercising regularly helps improve your sexual health, making you better in bed. It increases your sexual capacity, vitality, overall health and flexibility. So, if you’re a regular at the gym, you’ve probably got an edge in bed over someone who skips working out.

Want to boost your creativity or get better in bed? Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you how exercise is the solution to all your problems

Helps osteoporosis Keeping your bones healthy and strong is extremely important, especially as you age. Constant exercise keeps them healthy, which in turn reduces your risk of osteoporosis and also prevents muscle loss, which increases as you age.

digestion is better

S

ure, exercise keeps your tummy taut, your skin glowing and your weight balanced, but there are many more reasons to get moving. Exercise is an overall healer and it helps your mind and

body with absolutely everything under the sun. So, while not all of these benefits are surprising, they are the other reasons to get fit. Read on to find out more about the perks of exercise.

brain boost Not only does a good bout of exercise reduce the risk of dementia, staying active will also keep your mind sharp. You know

Alright, so you know exercise can help your bones stay strong, but did you know it can do the same for your digestive system? Sometimes, no matter how healthy your diet is, lack of exercise can ruin your digestive system. Even a little walking just to keep you active can help your system stay healthy and your digestion remain smooth.

reduces anxiety Say goodbye to depression, anxiety and even stress because any form of activity will release happy

chemicals, keeping you satisfied, fulfilled and much calmer than if you were sitting around doing nothing all day.

reduces cancer risk The one thing exercise does that you may not be aware of is that it can change your genetic makeup. So, if obesity runs in your family, it doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do about it. Regular exercise also reduces your cancer risk and lessens the severity of a stroke, even if it is inevitable for you to experience one.

improves confidence Yes, it can make you feel better too. Even if it’s not making a drastic change to your looks, exercising will boost your confidence, self-esteem and self-image — all of which are much more important than perfect features and a slim waist, don’t you think?

Helps you quit Got an addiction you can’t quit? Try diving into some exercise. Exercise actually has the same effect on your brain as substances and alcohol or even sex and good food. So, if you’ve got a junk food habit or a cigarette addiction that you want to shake off, exercising is a good way to start.

keeps you creative People who exercise are much more creative than those who don’t. Exercising can boost creativity, especially up to two hours after you work out. This is great because the next time you’re stumped and can’t think of anything creative, you know that all you need is a brisk walk or a swim.

« KNOW MORE: EYE CARE FOR SMARTPHONE USERS The number of hours we spend checking email, surfing the internet and playing games on our smartphones takes a toll on our eyes. That’s why Dev Goswami gives you a few tips on keeping them safe

S

martphones come with a lot of benefits, but lately there have been a number of health journals across the world that have raised the issue of smartphone usage and its effect on your vision. It is not just basic smartphone use that is causing eyesight problems — the use of smartphones in addition to a number of other lifestyle habits/ necessities is what makes smartphones bad for your eyes. Ophthalmic surgeon, director and surgical head at Mehta Eye Institute and Colaba Eye Hospital, Dr. Keiki Mehta says that we already spend 8-10 hours every day cooped up in front of our computers, and adding smartphone usage to this invariably means that you are straining your eyes. Another factor is using smartphones while travelling in buses and trains. The incessant moving and shaking while travelling means that our eyes have to constantly readjust, thereby getting strained. We’re sure you might be brushing this away as a minor problem, but Dr. Keiki gives us a worrying statistic. He says, “All over the world, there have been multiple reports of a 35% increase in patients suffering from myopia (nearsightedness). A

number of leading journals have attributed this to smartphone usage.” The effects of excessive or improper smartphone use on your eyesight is something that you’ll only see in the long run — when it will probably be too late. To avoid damaging your eyes, we ask Dr. Keiki to give us a few safety tips:

no pHones wHile travelling

maintain a HealtHy distance

stop using your pHone in dark rooms

Keep smartphones and tablets about an arms length away from your eyes. The closer your bring it, the harder your eyes have to work to maintain focus.

Looking at a bright screen when the surroundings are pitch dark is one of the most harmful habits. Your eyesight is made to deal with two extremes which doesn’t bode well for it at all. If you must use your phone while in bed, at least keep your bedside lamp on.

use bigger fonts In this age of speed, we want to read as much as we can, as soon as we can. That means that you often keep the font size at a minimum to ensure that more text fits your screen. However, small fonts will strain your eyes, so much so, that after continuous reading, they won’t be able to easily focus on far objects for a few minutes — this is your body warning you, pay heed.

As we said earlier, using your phone while travelling makes your eyes work even more. So, avoid harming them by not using your smartphone while travelling. Listen to music instead.

tHe 20:5 rule Finally, Dr. Keiki recommends that you follow the 20:5 rule. For every 20 minutes that you spend looking at your smartphone, look away into the distance for five minutes. This gives your eyes a much needed break.

From muscle rigidity to difficulty walking normally, these effects not only make it a tough condition to live with, but also take a toll on the patient’s mental health. However, there is some good news with regards to this disorder. A new study conducted by Oregon Health & Sciences University, USA has found that vitamin D can lead to a improved memory and a depression-free life for those suffering from Parkinson’s. While it’s too early to speculate, one can definitely hope that this leads to treatments and/ or steps that can help prevent this disorder.

But, did you know that it can also play havoc with how healthy your body is? Apart from the mental anguish and emotional pain that it brings, it can give you aches, pains and acne. Take a look at what grief does to your body so that you know why it’s so important to deal with it in a healthy manner.

Your bodY will hurt

You know that stress can cause acne outbreaks. Well, grief is similar to stress and it reacts in the same manner. If you’re grieving heavily, crying too much or tossing and turning in the midst of your mourning at night, you’ll experience several acne outbreaks, but these should subside as time goes by.

What part of your body? That doesn’t matter. Any extreme emotion will manifest in aches and pains throughout your body. You’ll have back aches, your muscles will hurt, your head will ache… all this is natural and will cease once you’ve begun to deal with your grief. Too much can create unnecessary and permanent muscle tension, so be wary.

You’ll hAve A terrible sleep cYcle Yes, the fact that grief can give you sleepless nights is no surprise. But, it can actually lead to insomnia, which is a health disorder that can outlive your mourning period. Sometimes, it’s difficult in the initial stages of grief to avoid it, since you’ll have several responsibilities and emotions to cope with together. But, with time you should be able to sleep. If you can’t, try meditating or ask your doctor for help, as this can adversely affect your health in the long run.

This is not a permanent effect of grief but it does occur if you’re grieving heavily and if it continues, it can health problems. So, if it becomes continuous and lasts too long, consult a doctor. Sporadic muscle twitches are nothing to worry about though and they occur even when you are asleep, usually when you’re thinking too much about the loss of a loved one.

Your mouth will seem drY If you suddenly feel like your mouth is dry, this could be a physical manifestation of your grief. Even drinking water won’t cure it properly, so your best bet is to try to ease your grief by doing things that can help you feel better. Grieving aggravates a region in your brain that causes dry mouth to occur.

Researchers conducted the study among 286 patients suffering from Parkinson’s. After studying the level of vitamin D in each patient and making them undergo various tests to see the levels of their cognitive function, depression and verbal memory, the researchers arrived at a number of conclusions. First of all, they found that higher vitamin D levels were associated with less severe symptoms, better cognition and less depression. The study also found that for those who weren’t suffering from dementia, high vitamin D levels were associated lower depression levels. Explaining how this study might help treat/ prevent Parkinson’s, Dr. Amie L. Peterson said, “Nearly 30% of people with PD suffer from cognitive impairment and dementia. Intervening in the development of dementia has the potential to improve morbidity and mortality in persons with PD. The fact that the relationship between vitamin D concentration and cognitive performance seemed more robust in the non-demented group suggests that earlier intervention before dementia may be more effective.”

* Vitamin D sources The sun is not the only source for vitamin D. Foods such as cereals, fish, dairy products, eggs and mushrooms are high in vitamin D and should be a part of your diet.

Unfortunately, a large number of contact lens users don’t know the correct way of keeping them clean. Apart from cleaning them before and after wear, you also need to take care of how you store them. A recent study by the University of Texas showed that 90% of people thought using fresh solution meant simply adding a few drops to what was already in the lens case. Simply topping up the existing lens solution with a couple of squirts is an absolute no-no. This completely robs the disinfecting power of the lens solution, which can cause vision-harming infections. Every time you wear your lenses, empty the case, rinse it and let it air dry. When you take off your lenses, fill it with fresh solution before putting the contacts in.

The baThroom floor is a minefield of germs Your bathroom floor is rather clean and it is in fact the toilet bowl which has the most germs — correct? Wrong. your shower rouTine A long, hot shower is extremely relaxing after a hard day, but it is terrible for your skin. It strips skin off its natural oils and can even make problems such as eczema worse. If you aren’t prone to eczema, you can still be left with sore, itchy skin. Also, the longer shower you take, the more your skin is prone to drying out. So, keep your showers under 10 minutes and stick to lukewarm water. Also, if you like to use a body scrub, use it only once or twice a week. Using these products too frequently results in your body losing the oils and lipids which fight dryness. Lastly, instead of vigorously towel-drying, use a towel to blot your skin to get rid of the water and follow up immediately with a good moisturiser. Try moisturising as soon as possible because your skin absorbs moisturiser best in the few minutes that follow immediately after a shower.

What can I do? — deepak salve, matunga dear deepak, You mentioned changing razors and blades but have you tried switching your shaving gel/ foam? Since your facial hair does ultimately come off, this is probably a sign of your hair not being soft enough for shaving. You should also try shaving with warm water instead of normal, room temperature water. Warm water will open up pores and make your beard easier to shave. Just moisten your face with warm water and without drying it off, apply shaving foam. Instead of holding your razor under a running stream of tap water, dip it in a bowl of warm water — it really does help. Also, avoid more than one razor stroke over the same area — if you must, finish your shave, lather some more foam and shave

ew Delhi: Leading social media company Facebook wants to read SMSes and other confidential information of people on the Android mobile phone platform, cyber security firm Kaspersky said today. “Over the last few days there has been a constant scrutiny over Facebook having access to your SMS. Buried within the latest update for Facebook’s Android app is a feature that is causing growing concern among some users,” Kaspersky said in a statement yesterday. No immediate comments were received from Facebook. Facebook is one of the companies that has been accused by

US Whistleblower Edward Snowden of sneaking in to private information to help National Security Agency of US in spying at global level. The social media firm has denied that allegation. Facebook application at the time of installation on Android mobile phones seeks certain permissions and the updated version now asks users to allow it “Read your text messages (SMS or MMS)”. The social media’s logic behind seeking access to SMS is that “if you add a phone number to your account, this allows us to confirm your phone number automatically by finding the confirmation code that we send via text message”.

The updated Facebook application now wants to “Read calendar events plus confidential information” which it justifies as it is required to allow “the app to show

that has to be entered when a user registers with the social media website which in a way helps the company verify the authenticity of users twice. “Two-factor authentication provides an extra level of security, so it’s good to see Facebook providing this option ... As a final note, we’d urge people to carefully check the permissions requested by any app when you first install it,” Kaspersky Lab’s Principal Security Researcher David Emm said. word ‘automatic’ used in the permission sought by Facebook. “...The key, it seems to lie in the word ‘automatically’. Surely the app doesn’t need to do this automatically. Facebook could simply prompt me to type in the code manually. Or, at the very least, provide this option,” Kaspersky said. It added that this may be an innocent feature “but in the light of growing concerns about online privacy, such an option would help to allay people’s fears”. Facebook is reported to have 93 million users in India out of which 75 million access it from their mobile phone as of December 2013.

Cong, BJP spar over BPL issue N

ew Delhi: Narendra Modi was yesterday attacked by the Congress after the Gujarat government suggested that it was using Rs 10.80 a day as the limit to identify subsidy beneficiaries, drawing a sharp retort from BJP which claimed states were only following the criteria set out by the Centre. Latching on to the BPL criteria of people earning below Rs 10.80 daily found on a Gujarat government

website, Congress lashed out at BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate, asking him to apologise to the poor for “insulting” and making a “mockery” of them. Hitting back at the Congress, BJP said this criteria was decided by the Centre in 2004 and states were instructed to follow it. Asking Congress to “go back to the drawing room and do its homework”, BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman

said deciding the BPL criteria was Centre’s prerogative. She said many reminders have been sent by the Gujarat government to the Centre asking it to review the criteria. She said if one went by Centre’s methodology of poverty, in Gujarat only 21 lakh BPL families would have benefited. But the Gujarat government had made sure that 11 lakh more families were added to the list of beneficiaries.

slamabad: As the Pakistan government and the outlawed Taliban prepare for peace talks, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif yesterday said he wants to overcome both terrorism within the country and outstanding issues with India through dialogue as peace is vital for reviving the country’s economy. “My only wish and prayer is that this process (talks with the Taliban) should move forward successfully, and whatever issues Pakistan faces, they should be solved through dialogue,” Sharif told the media.

“I also want Pakistan’s external issues (with) India, Afghanistan to be resolved through dialogue. There are so many issues pending for long on which we can move forward through dialogue,” he said. Sharif, whose government has named a four-member committee for talks with the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), said restoring peace through dialogue is the best option. He added peace is vital for reviving Pakistan’s economy. He welcomed the team nominated by the Taliban to hold talks with the government’s committee.

Expressing satisfaction at the ongoing dialogue process with the Taliban, Sharif said he hoped both the committees will move forward in a positive direction to bring peace to the country. He said he was supervising the dialogue process and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan was in touch with the government committee to assist it in efforts to reach a positive outcome. The protesters raised anti-Congress slogans and held up black flags and placards, demanding justice for thousands who were killed in anti-Sikh riots in October 1984 following the assassination of then prime minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. dvertising industry watchdog ASCI has upheld complaints against 57 campaigns in November last year for misleading ads, including those of Maruti Suzuki, Hindustan Unilever, Ranbaxy, Pizza Hut, Bisleri and TVS. According to the Customer Complaints Council (CCC) of ASCI (Advertising Standard Council of India), health and personal care category continued to lead with the highest number complaints of misleading ads during the month, reports PTI. The watchdog upheld a complaint against Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL), where the auto major in a TV commercial (TVC) of Alto 800 showed a couple celebrating Diwali and travelling with ‘diya’ (oil lamp). “The advertisement sends a dangerous message of carrying an oil lamp in the car. It flouts the safety rules and spreads a dangerous message,” the regulator said. ASCI also found a commercial by TVS violating the norms where the two-wheeler manufacturer has shown a woman pillion riding without a helmet in one of the ads of Star City. A similar complaint against Future Bazaar, which in a TVC of Big Bazaar shows a women

pillion riding without helmet, was also upheld. The Customer Complaints Council also ruled that Pizza Hut’s hoardings claiming Rs 99 on any meal any day are “not factually true”.It also ruled against Bisleri claiming to have anti-acidic spring water from Himalayas. Upholding another complaint, the regulator said Hindustan Unilever could not substantiate the claims of its new Close Up Deep Action Toothpaste of ‘Confidence of Fresh breath till 12 hours’. Besides, the CCC upheld complaints against Ranbaxy Laboratories, where it had claimed 21-day money back guarantee challenge on Revital. ASCI also took action against on online ad on social networking site Facebook, where Stayzilla.Com displayed an image which is demeaning to woman. “The CCC concluded that the Facebook Ad shows an indecent depiction of a woman and objectifies women, which is likely in the light of generally prevailing standards of decency and propriety, to cause grave or widespread offence,” it said. In health and personal care category, the CCC found that claims in 44 different advertisers had violated guidelines.

adar Matunga Cultural Centre holds an annual classical music festival every year in memory of Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande who was a pioneer of sorts. The festival is held in two sessions and the artistes performing here are highly talented in their respective fields. The evening session this year saw the young tabla maestro Satyajit Talwalkar give a solo tabla recital. Talwalkar played the 16-beat teen taal to the accompaniment provided by young Siddhesh Bicholkar. The usual tabla segments like Peshkar, Chakradar, Rela and Gats were played with a sense of perfect timing and execution. Kalpana Zokarkar, a veteran singer from Indore sang the raga 'Bhoopali'. Zokarkar has internalised many different styles and influences. Her father, the late Krishnarao Muzumdar, was a pupil of Ustad Rajab Ali Khan who was known for his complex taan patterns. She has also trained under Vasantrao Rajurkar of the Gwalior gharana and Dr. Suhila Pohankar. Zokarkar could effortlessly integrate these three streams of music in her 'Bhoopali'. The bada khyal 'Jabahi Sab Nrutati Niras Bhaye' was set to ek taal. The lyric which

She was given superb support by her daughter Anuja who is a budding singer. Omkar Gulwady on the tabla and Niranjan Lele on the harmonium gave excellent support to the singer. Besides, the Padma awards have been announced on the eve of the Republic Day. Music lovers are happy that a popular singer like

Renowned danseuse and educationist Dr. Kanak Rele was felicitated for winning three prestigious awards in a row, the Padmabhusan, SNA Ratna and Nritya Kala Sudha. Among the 14 dancers who participated in the festival, the eight dancers who excelled in their respective styles were given the Nalanda Nritya Nipuna award and the winners were Radhika Nair for Mohiniattam, Sangeetha and Prasanthi for Nangiyar Koothu, Anand Satchidanandan and Parimal Hansoge for Bharata Natyam, Moumita Ghosh for Odissi and Bhakti Bhatawadekar and Priyanka Surve for Kathak. The other dancers who participated in the festival were Apeksha Mundargi, Anahita Bharadwaj, Mythili Anoop, Shreyasi Gopinath, Sakshi Kumar and Jigna Dixit. However, there is a genuine sense of disappointment about other deserving musicians who qualify for the honour. Legitimate claims of tabla players like Swapan Chaudhury, Kumar Bose and Anindo Chatterjee have been ignored which is a pity. The authorities concerned should take cognizance and make suitable amends next year.

'Theliviyalu', it was exciting to watch Radhika dance the pure dance number Panjari Katla executing varied swaying and 'andolika' movements with perfect finish and elegance. Parimala Hansoge's Bharata Natyam was noteworthy for its clarity and precision of movements and control over 'abhinaya' in the Akhilandeshwari number that portrays the virile and benevolent aspect of the Goddess. Parimal's presentation of the intricate Balamuralikrishna Thillana won her acclaim and appreciation from the audience. While Anand Satchidanandan impressed the audience with fine 'angashuddhi' and precise execution of movements, Moumita Ghosh was powerful in the interpretation of Goddess as Mahisasuramardini. While Prasanthi and Sangeetha excelled in expressions and movements in the lesser known art form of Kerala known as Nangiyar Koothu, the audience was pleasantly surprised to witness the Kandyan dance being performed by Nuwan Theekshana and Nirmani Oruwalage performing with lot of vibrancy and enthusiasm. Kudos to the Nalanda team for the colourful young dancers' festival.

Rainy Day’ is the story of a go-getter and an achiever, Aniket (Subodh Bhave) who wants to be rich quickly. He will resort to any means to get what he wants, including bribing people, enticing them with immoral ‘gifts’ or even getting people off his path. Aniket’s wife Mugdha (Mrinal Kulkarni) does not approve of his deeds. The film revolves around Mugdha’s extra-sensory powers, their shattering married life and Aniket’s never ending desires. Finally a pregnant Mugdha decides to leave her husband and abort her child and goes to live with her mother (Sulabha Arya). The film's composition is unlike others, and rain has been utilized by famed sound

designer Resul Pookuty to create various moods in the film. The director, Rajendra Tarak has written a story which is very different from mainstream plots, and he needs to be congratulated for his wonderful effort. Cinematographer Sanjay Jadhav has shot the film in natural light and locations, and the rain has been captured well by his camera, especially in the church and hospital sequences. The editing by Vidyadhar Pathare is commensurate with the story of the film, despite a few flashbacks and transitions. The music by Ashok Patki is in the classical mould and the performances by Subodh and Mrunal are wonderful. Sulabha Arya, Harsh Chhaya, Neha Pendse, Manoj Joshi, Sanjay Mone, and Ajinkya Dev support well.

The mahurat of producer Sandeep Nadange’s’ LBW’ was held at the Shock Pub, Bandra and the first poster too was unveiled. The film is directed by Ankur Kakatkar and stars Amruta Khanvilkar, Sushant Shelar, Jitendra Joshi, Sanjay Mone, Milind Phatak, Ashish Kulkarni and Suhas Joshi. The film is written by Milind Phatak and has music by Amit Raj and Nilesh Mohrir.

INNEPEG (Canada): Veteran Indian player Joshna Chinappa lifted her maiden WSA World Tour title with the Winnipeg Winter Club Open trophy after beating Egypt’s Heba El Torky in a hardfought final here. The fourth-seeded Indian triumphed 3-2 (11-13 11-8 11-5 3-11 12-10) in a see-saw battle. The world number 27 Chinappa rallied after losing the opening game which was dominated by Heba. The Indian raced to an 8-3 lead in the second game before pocketing it easily. She built on the advantage by claiming the third game as well before Heba roared back in the fourth. The Egyptian’s fightback made the fifth game an exciting affair in which momentum kept swinging both ways. Chinappa had the slight early advantage and she took a 7-6 lead but Heba clinched six straight points to make it 10-7. But just when it seemed that Heba would walk away with the title, Chinappa got her act together and reeled off five back-toback points to quite literally snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Chinappa’s triumph marks the second consecutive year of an Indian winning the trophy with Dipika Pallikal being the one to clinch it before her.

URICH: Former world champion Viswanathan Anand tasted his first success in Classical Chess this year after defeating his former challenger Boris Gelfand of Israel in the fourth round of the Zurich Chess Challenge. With his first win in four games, Anand jumped to joint third spot on three points. This victory also served as a morale booster after an indifferent start that involved two losses and a draw in the first three rounds. All three games in the highest category event ended decisively. World champion Magnus Carlsen avenged his blitz loss against Fabiano Caruana of Italy with a comprehensive win, while Levon Aronian of Armenia played like a machine to beat Hikaru Nakamura of United States. Carlsen scored his third victory in four games to take his personal tally to seven points in all under the unique scoring system that gives two points for a win and one for a draw in the Classical games. The recently crowned world champion is making most of the opportunities here.

IN BRIEF Warne to ‘think about’ England coaching job

SYDNEY: Australian bowling great Shane Warne, so often the cause of England’s demise, offered today to think about reviving the old enemy as the country’s next coach. As England players flew home in the early hours following a final defeat in Sydney, Warne took to Twitter in answer to calls for him to apply for the role. “To my English followers, I’m flattered that you would like me to consider the England job,” Warne tweeted. “All I can say is — I will think about it!!!” The comment could of course be a wind-up from the 44-year-old who, at the end of January, was named as spin consultant ahead of Australia’s World Twenty20 campaign starting in Bangladesh in March. Cricket Australia said Warne would support head coach Darren Lehmann, providing specialist training for the squad’s spinners.
