Exchange pre-2005 banknotes by Jan 01, 2015
By A Business Reporter
F
ollowing its Press Release of January 24, 2014, the Reserve Bank of India has extended the date for exchanging the pre-2005 banknotes to January 01, 2015. It has also advised banks to facilitate the exchange of these notes for full value and without causing any inconvenience whatsoever to the public. The Reserve Bank solicits the cooperation of the public in withdrawing these notes from circulation by exchanging them
at a bank branch convenient to them. This withdrawal exercise is in conformity with the standard international practice of not having multiple series of notes in circulation at the same time. A majority of such notes have already been withdrawn through the banks and only a limited number of notes remain with the public. The RBI clarifies that the public can continue to freely use these notes for any transaction and can unhesitatingly receive these notes in payment, as all such notes continue to remain legal tender.

Do you agree with Sunil Gavaskar that the Indian cricket team's work ethics are pretty abysmal?
Dashrath Pawar Cricket fan Yes. India's performance against Pakistan was one of the poorest. Either party has to lose. However, in this case, our team did not give their best, which is unfortunate.
Narendra Yadav Marketing Executive Yes. It is true that the performance has not been up to the mark. However, to say that the work ethics are abysmal won't find many takers. Siddharth Kumar Manager No. The dirt is swept underneath the mat. It is not only India but countries like Australia and England who have witnessed similar fate. What is important is the character the team wears on their shirts even during a loss. Bhai Mirlekar Activist Yes. They have not practised well and there cannot be anything like optional practice. There should not be any excuse for practice.
Bhushan Joshi Insurance Executive Yes. We suffered a nerve-wracking defeat at the hands of Pakistan. It was not an usual match. Our players did not give their best.

t is baby Aisha's fourth birthday today and her parents, Mariam and Faiyaz Mukri are planning to celebrate it with enthusiasm, as for them, Aisha is no ordinary baby. Although each child is special for its parents, Aisha is more so for the Mukris, because she was born after 15 repeated miscarriages. For the Mukris, Aisha is God's gift to them through the means of medical science. “I had lost all hopes of being able to have a child after repeated miscarriages. But immunotherapy gave me the chance,” said Mariam, a resident of Uran, and the happy mother of a beautiful girl. The case: After marrying in 1993, each of Miriam's conception led to a miscarriage. “My husband and I consulted several doctors and underwent all possible tests, but our reports always turned out to be normal. No doctor could tell me the reason for the repeated miscarriages. I was devastated and on the verge of a depression. Having 15 miscarriages was traumatic. I was advised by my family and friends to stop trying for a baby, but my husband wanted a child. He wasn't keen on adoption either. I did not know what to do,” said Mariam.
reaction and its preparation to accept foreign tissue.” “Once the body is ready, the couple has to plan the baby within a year. The success rate of this therapy is 85 to 90 per cent,” added Dr. Raut. When asked if this is a one time procedure, the doctors said, “The effect of this therapy lasts for a year. So, if a couple plans to have another child, they should take medical advice, and after undergoing tests the decision can be taken.” The entire procedure takes around four hours and the cost, including tests, is approxiomately Rs. 50,000. ICPRM – situated at Santacruz (East) – is the first centre in India that provides specialized treatment to patients suffering from repeated miscarriages, failed IVFs and unexplained infertility. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

Speaking about the therapy in detail, Dr. Mohan Raut said, “A baby is half of a mother's tissues and half of the father's. He stands and delivers To all those doubting Thomases who questioned the appointment of Rakesh Maria as the CP of Mumbai, we say, let it all go, the man is delivering, time after time. And validation comes from sources both strange and diverse. First there is the evidence on the roads, where one actually sees traffic police out in plain sight and not skulking in corners waiting to make their “quotas” in fines. Second, policemen on bandobust duty have themselves told us how things have changed for them especially in the field of welfare. Whereas before cops would be on duty for 14 to 16 hours at a time, with not a soul to worry about whether they were being fed and watered, now apparently, police stations have received instructions to provide them with bottled water and the meals they require. They are simple needs, but at last there is a top cop who cares about the men in the field.
Third and most importantly, there is a new energy and freshness about the way our policemen are approaching investigation. Before, this was desultory and fragmented, now police stations and various departments are being welded together in one organic whole. Unity is the new mantra. That is why, three weeks after he took charge, the case of Esther Anuhya's brutal murder, has been solved. We could tell you more stories from people who have gone to the Commissionerate at Crawford Market and found Rakesh Maria both approachable and patient. But it would take too long. Besides, we need to keep some stories for the rainy days that are bound to come when this present honeymoon period ends and the knives come out. For now, we will enjoy feeling that Mumbai's law and order, its safety and security, is in good hands.
Dr Glenn Mascarenhas and the prize baramundi he caught off the shores of Vijaydurg in coastal Maharashtra. Behind him is fellow angling enthusiast and oncologist Dr. Ian D'Souza.
It really was a big 'un!
More and more we realise how important it is to have a hobby to de-stress, preferably one that has nothing to do with one's profession. Doctors, we find are enthusiastic hobbyists, and we know many who use their spare time to go mountaineering, sing, compose lyrics, write books and even act. Over the weekend we met with prosthodontist Glenn Mascarenhas who uses his buddy time to go fishing, which is very serious business for anglers indeed. His latest trip was to the Vijaydurg region in Sindhudurg, where the weekend was spent with oncologist Dr. Ian D'Souza, son of a former mayor of Mumbai, Dr Leon D'Souza, and freight forwarding company owner Alex Fernandes. Out on the water in a small motor boat from early in the morning, the sun ensures that their fishing day is done by 11 am, when they head back to their hotels and no doubt swop tall stories about the one that got away. But this time, said Dr Mascarenhas, they were pleasantly surprised. “We trawled and went popping and did not expect much because of all the netting that takes place. Sometimes we have
caught grouper and barracuda as well. Then I caught a seven-kg
Spotted by sometime contributor and regular reader S. Venkatnarayan is this baby cuckoo, right in the heart of busy Matunga. That makes him, says his admirer, 'a pucca Mumbaikar' since it has been born in the city. Notoriously elusive, more heard than seen, this particular bird sings its lullabies early in the morning and again at dusk, as twilight takes over the evening sky. They are shy birds, so this is a bit of a coup. Or perhaps a cuck-coup!
baramundi.” Or maybe it was eight kg but one thing is sure. That's delight you see on the successful angler's face. Then they came home to Mumbai, driving for nearly eight hours, feeling as if they would never reach. It was a nice story, and we learned that sport fishing is getting really big in Maharashtra, with some lakes being stocked with varieties of fish, including the majestic mahseer. Which means that you catch them using special lures that don't hurt their mouths, then you throw them back in the water. Which may seem like a pointless exercise to many of us fish-as-food lovers, but with anglers, who can tell!
Deja vu!
Bollywoodtrade reports that the largest Broadcast Network in America, CBS, has offered Mallika Sherawat a role in one of their top prime-time shows. To quote the website: “Mallika will join the cast of 'Hawaii Five-O', a top-rated American TV show, that airs all over the world. The part that she will be playing on the show is being kept secret, but what we know is that, due to her contractual obligation, she had to cancel a previous engagement at the prestigious English university, Oxford, where Ms. Sherawat was scheduled to participate in a debate! “She expressed particular regret
at having to miss this opportunity to address an issue close to her heart – that of women's rights and equality – but the filming contract, to which she is obligated, had no flexibility for her to make the trip to Oxford. Mallika will leave for Honolulu and would be shooting there for a couple of weeks.” Frankly, the reference to “the prestigious English university, Oxford”, made us a bit suspicious about whether the whole thing was a spoof. But maybe it is not, and we are sure Hawai's gain is Oxford's loss. Hopefully this is not a repeat of Ms Sherawat's big con job on her fans in Jackie Chan's 'The Myth'. Her role turned out to be as mythical as the title of the film itself – a whole eight minutes long!
ADC IMPACT A Book Lover Speaks... I have often quoted an interview I gave to a Mumbai-based newspaper, Afternoon Despatch and Courier, in which the paper would ask the interviewee 20 standard questions and on that basis publish an extremely interesting and lively write-up. One question was “Mr. Advani, what is your greatest weakness?” My prompt reply was “Books; at a grosser level, chocolates”. It is this interview that has been prompting people who come to greet me on my birthday or any such happy occasion to keep adding to my personal library, which is now sizable. - BJP patriarch LK Advani As quoted on L.K.Advani's latest blog: http://blog.lkadvani.in/blog-in-english/how-association-with-rss-has-given-meaning-to-my-life

DGP directs police officials to file their assets returns by March 31, or face disciplinary action By Philip Varghese
I
n a landmark decision, the office of the Director General of Police – Maharashtra has issued a circular directing all the police officials between the rank of Police Sub-inspector (PSI) to Police Inspector (PI) to file their assets returns by March 31. Till now only Indian Police Service (IPS) officers had to file such returns every year and “this is for the first time that Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) cadre officers will have to file returns which shall be
repeated every year. “Considering the massive corruption among lower rank officers this is a big and positive decision taken by the Government. This circular had also made it clear that officers who fail to file their returns will have to face disciplinary action. Although it might not reduce the corruption but it will definitely make it complicated for corrupt officers to invest their black money. Time and again we have heard of police officers who amass assets worth crores of rupees, but never file any returns which makes ACB's job difficult,” sources said.

wo weeks after the Bombay High Court allowed People for Ethical Treatment to Animals (Peta) to visit Kolhapur in a bid to put to rest contradictory reports of whether Sunder the elephant is in 'musth' (a period of heightened sexual urge, which can make captive bull elephants aggressive due to frustration) or not, to inspect and videograph the animal, Peta's lawyers Shiraz Rustomjee and Rohan Rajadhyaksha on Monday presented findings by elephant experts Dr E.K. Easwaran, Assistant Director, Department of Animal Husbandry, Kerala and Dr. Yaduraj Khadpekar, Senior Veterinary Officer, Wildlife SOS – India after visiting the 14year-old elephant on February 19. Sunder is at the centre of a case in which Peta is calling for the animal’s release to a sanctuary. Peta's lawyers argued that Sunder is kept so severely chained that he’s unable to lie down. “The findings showed
that Sunder is displaying signs of severe frustration and mental distress through constant head wobbling, swaying, and other abnormal repetitive movements. As per the report and evidence, Sunder was displaying aggressive behaviour only towards his own mahout, Hyder, and no aggression towards other people during the inspection indicating that Sunder feels threatened by his own mahout,” the lawyers told the court. According to Peta, MLA Vinay Kore had donated Sunder to the Jyotiba temple in 2007, and the elephant has been kept chained since then. In December 2013, Peta obtained video footage showing that Sunder's mahout violently beat him with a pole near a poultry shed where he had been moved at the behest of Kore. That same month, the Bombay High Court ordered Sunder's transfer to a sanctuary, but he has yet to be re-
leased by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Sarjan Bhagat. Kore and the Kolhapur division of the forest department claimed this is because Sunder is in 'musth' and cannot be transported. Advocate Rajadhyaksha said, “The recent experts’ report has clarified that Sunder is not showing signs of normal 'musth' condition, but ‘moda’ (adolescent) 'musth', and pointed out that Sunder can be transported to a sanctuary and that he should be, to avoid further damage to his mental status. The report also confirmed that Sunder’s current housing facilities are grim and do not even meet the minimum basic standards.” Government lawyer J.S. Saluja submitted a one-page report of a twomember panel comprising S. Bhatt, a veterinarian from Kolhapur and Ajay Desai, a wildlife expert. Saluja cited the report to oppose Sunder's transfer at this stage. “The elephant is still in 'musth'. In the present condition, it would not be possible to shift him anywhere.” After hearing both sides, the division bench comprising of Justice V.M. Kanade and Justice Anil Menon observed that the mahout is untrained and that it is cruel to keep an elephant chained in this way and adjourned the matter for final hearing to March 11. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

The move is being seen as a fallout of a tactical understanding with the NCP, which 'managed' a section of Shiv Sena corporators, to mysteriously abstain from the House. Fearing the widening rift between the local BJP and Shiv-Sena cadres could dent the chances of Rajan Vichare -their Lok Sabha candidate, from the Thane Lok Sabha parliamentary segment. Thane district Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde summoned the corporators and pulled them up for their defiance.

Directorate of State Town Planning department rejected the proposal to de-reserve the plot and passed the subsequent order (No: TPS1213/1813/231/13/NV-12) in this context. “Although the land is proposed to be allotted to the Agri Sanstha, the facilities will be extended to every citizen, irrespective of cast, creed and religion,” said, veteran BJP leader, Rohidas Patil. It should be noted that the Agri community not only has a sizeable presence in the region, but at one point of time the members of this clan had a dominating presence in the MBMC and a virtual clout in local politics.

In the seat sharing agreement between the Mahayuti alliance, the seat has been allocated to the Rashtriya Samaj Paksha (RSP) whose president Mahadev Jankar is slated to contest against NCPs sitting MP Supriya Sulye. Meanwhile, BJP workers led by MLA Jaykumar Rawal and others have complained to former BJP president Nitin Gadkari over the candidature of Dr. Subhash Bhamre and want Bhamre to be replaced. Gadkari is reported to have told the delegation that if there is a recommendation from the state party unit then the candidature can be changed.

fter prolonged discussions, the NCP yesterday, announced the name of Suresh Dhas, Minister of State for Revenue, to contest the Beed parliamentary constituency against senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. The decision was taken by the NCP president and Union Agriculture Minister, Sharad Pawar at a meeting, in which several senior party leaders were present. The NCP was looking for suitable candidate who could be pitted against Munde, and after a series of rounds, finally underscored Dhas' name. Significantly, the NCP is yet to announce candidates for the Maval, Hatkanangale and Hingoli seats. Tweet tweet: nitinji and raj meet each other Continued from pg 1 « Speaking to the electronic media in the evening, Gadkari remarked “we want to avoid the candidates put up by Raj Thackeray ultimately benefiting the Congress. Moreover, what is more important is that he should join the BJP-led NDA and lend support. Our aim is to ensure that he does not field his candidates against us and even if he does so their numbers should be less. It is important to ensure that the anti-Congress votes do not get divided. Our candidates have been decided and that there is no possibility of any changes being made. At present there is no possibility of any alliance between MNS-BJP. Any decision related to MNS will be discussed and decided by the Mahayuti leaders. I too am a leader and can meet anybody. Hence no one needs to get upset”. MNS sources confirmed the meeting having taken place. After which Shelar on his twitter handle was forced to tweet “nitinji and raj are accessible people and they meet each other for a discussion on congress free india”. However, barely couple of hours earlier as the electronic media started flashing
the news, Ashish Shelar tweeted “let me put to rest irresponsible speculation: No secret meetings happening between BJP and MNS. Thanks”. Only last month, both Raj Thackeray and Gadkari had been together in Nashik for the ground-breaking ceremony of 'Godapark' project, a tourism project of the Nashik Municipal Corporation. The MNS is in power in the Nashik civic body with the support of BJP. Sources disclosed that the two leaders discussed the ensuing March 20 Legislative Council elections and the ensuing Lok Sabha elections. The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance which has decided to field two candidates each, is short of numbers in the legislative assembly and will have to depend on parties like MNS which has 12 MLAs in the lower house. Besides, the BJP is also keeping the backdoor channels of communications open with the MNS in view of the ensuing Lok Sabha polls. It may be recalled that in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, the presence of MNS candidates in constituencies in Mumbai and parts of Maharashtra had resulted in some BJP-Sena candidates losing by considerable mar-

Ponder awhile... “A Bill of Rights is what the people are entitled to against every government, and what no just government should refuse, or rest on inference.” – Thomas Jefferson
Lokpal: So is it finally over! W
HENEVER a joint committee is formed, the UPA does a lot of manipulation and ensures that in the arrival at any decision, it has the final say. It allows the member of the opposition to become its chairman and gives all possible concessions, but cleverly it retains this power to have a big say in any decision making. The setting up of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) is an instance of a manoeuvred plan. Another instance of such a manoeuvre is the passing of the Jan Lokpal Bill. Social activist Anna Hazare was the one who wanted Jan Lokpal Bill accepted by the government. Anna undertook an indefinite hunger strike more than once and the government finally agreed to pass the bill with some changes. It, however, made several changes like the appointment of CBI – ambiguous. Now, the UPA is faced with a big problem – quite a few eminent people whom it wanted to accept a seat in the selection committee of the Jan Lokpal have flatly refused. An eminent advocate, Fali Nariman, has refused to be in such a committee which he said is a joke. Justice T.K. Thomas has quit the plan too. It must have been quite embarrassing to the government. What has happened does not augur well to the reputation of the UPA government. There is something apparently wrong in the framing of the Jan Lokpal too since the UPA so far shows that it wants to have total control of the government. It is not going to be a free institution at all. Ultimately, it is the government which will have a final say how the Lokpal will be implemented. The decision to stay away by the two eminent personalities not to have anything to do with the Jan Lokpal proves that the Jan Lokpal which the government has created is nothing but a sham. The provisions which Anna Hazare included in his Jan Lokpal format are conspicuous by its absence. They have been added to the format to ensure that the government can do whatever it likes.

NOTHER Lok Sabha, 15th in the series, has concluded its five-year tenure. Whatever business that was transacted in the house was, indeed, exasperating and raucous. Unfortunately the house representing the democratic system has fallen by the wayside practically in all Asian countries. In another three months Indian voters will once again queue up before the polling booths to elect their representatives. Their quality has been wanting. But I am confident that the next house will be better in content because the emergence of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has changed the political scenario in the country to make it cleaner and transparent. Yet I do not like the increasing influence of the armed forces. Defence Minister A.K. Anthony was correct in saying that there can never be an army coup in the country. First India's Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru too echoed the same thoughts when he opted for the parliamentary way of governance after independence in August 1947. His argument was that the country was too large and too caste and religion ridden.

central government has not relented because the armed forces want the AFSPA to continue. Even a marginal concession of releasing the political prisoners as requested by the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister has been denied. More recent is the inquiry into the "encounter" at Pathribal in Jammu and Kashmir. The army is alleged to have killed five "terrorists" while the local villagers have said that the deceased were innocent. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquired into the matter and has submitted its report before the Supreme Court. According to the report, it was a cold blooded fake encounter. In fact, breaking his silence after 23 years then Kupwara deputy commissioner S.M. Yasin said recently that he had been threatened and offered promotions to change his
Upper hand in affairs of governance My worry, however, is over the say which the armed forces are beginning to have in the affairs of governance. Take the stationing of troops at the Siachen Glacier. Was it necessary when several retired top brass said that it had no strategic importance? Even otherwise, when an agreement had been initialed by foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan, our armed forces should have followed the decision but they had it stalled. Instead of being a no-man territory the soldiers of both countries at the glacier are suffering due to the inclement weather and losing men at regular intervals. Take another example of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) which empowers the army to detain or even kill a person on suspicion without any legal action. The northeast has been under it for years. A government-appointed committee found it "unnecessary" and recommended its withdrawal. But the armed forces have had their way and the AFSPA continues to be in operation. Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah has officially asked New Delhi to free the state from the law's application. He has made the appeal even publicly. But the
BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar report on the alleged mass rapes in Konam Poshpora in February 1991. It is strange that the army has claimed that there was no such incident. The self-acquittal by the top brass has only aggravated the sense of alienation and resentment among the people in Jammu and Kashmir. The government of India should still set up a judicial inquiry headed by a Supreme Court judge to investigate into what are perceived as fake encounters. Hardly has the dust settled down on the Pathribal encounters when the story of a possible coup in January 2012 has become public. Two army units--one of which was an armoured battalion moved to Delhi from Agra. Any movement of troops in the periphery of the capital has to be with the prior permission. Still both units moved and were withdrawn only when the Defence Secretary summoned the Director General of Military Operations, Lt. Gen. A.K. Choudhary, at mid-
What is the most important Buddhist teaching? T
he Buddha spoke the Four Noble Truths and many other teachings, but at the heart they all stress the same thing. An ancient story explains this well. Once a very old king went to see an old hermit who lived in a bird’s nest in the top of a tree, “What is the most important Buddhist teaching?” The hermit answered, “Do no evil, do only good. Purify your heart.” The king had expected to hear a very long explanation. He protested, “But even a five-year old child can understand that!” “Yes,” replied the wise sage, “but even an 80-year-old man cannot do it.” The Triple Jewel The Buddha knew it would be difficult for people to follow his teachings on their own, so he established the ‘Three Refuges’ for them to rely on. If a person wants to become a Buddhist take refuge in and rely on the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. These are known as the Triple Jewel. The Sangha are the monks and nuns. They live in monasteries and carry on the Buddha’s teaching. The word Sangha means ‘harmonious community’. The Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha together possess qualities that are precious like jewels and can lead one to enlightenment. The Five Precepts All religions have some basic rules that define what is good conduct and what kind of
conduct should be avoided. In Buddhism, the most important rules are the Five Precepts. These have been passed down from the Buddha himself. 1. No killing – Respect for life 2. No stealing – Respect for others’ property 3. No sexual misconduct – Respect for our pure nature 4. No lying – Respect for honesty 5. No intoxicants – Respect for a clear mind No killing: The Buddha said, “Life is dear to all beings. They have the right to live the same as we do.” We should respect all life and not kill anything. Killing ants and mosquitoes is also breaking this precept. We should have an attitude of loving kindness towards all beings, wishing them to be happy and free from harm. Taking care of the earth, its rivers and air is included. One way that many Buddhists follow this precept is by being vegetarian. No stealing: If we steal from another, we steal from ourselves. Instead, we should learn to give and take care of things that belong to our family, to the school, or to the public. No sexual misconduct: Proper conduct shows respect for oneself and others. Our bodies are gifts from our parents, so we should protect them from harm. Young people should especially keep their natures pure and develop their virtue. It is up to them to make the world a better place to live. In
night and conveyed him that the top brass in the government was very unhappy and concerned.
Examples must serve as grim warning
When a daily newspaper broke the story at that time, Defence Minister A.K. Anthony rubbished it. So did some key army and civilian officials. Now Lt. Gen. A.K. Choudhary, after his retirement, has confirmed the story. More shocking is the confirmation by Air Chief N.A.K. Browne, then heading the Air Force. He has said: “The paratroopers were being moved to check out the possibility of their marrying with the C130 at Hindon air base, near Delhi.” Still the Defence Minister has said that it was “a routine training exercise.” When after telling the Director General of Military Operations, the government sends a chopper to check if the troops were on their way back, there is more than what meets the eye. Since the date synchronized with the appeal to the Supreme Court by the then army chief V.K. Singh on his birth date, the movement of the military units was given importance beyond proportions. The entire matter has to be examined further by a team of top retired civil and military officials to reach the bottom of the "routine exercise." It cannot be left at the mere denial stage despite Defence Minister Anthony's vehement denial. Even a limited say of the armed forces in civilian matters is ominous. The armed forces are apolitical is a tribute to their training and conviction when both Pakistan and Bangladesh have swerved from the right path. The other two countries in the subcontinent have had a similar training. Still they threw out the elected government. Even today when the troops have gone back to the barracks, one cannot underestimate the importance of the military. The Indian military knows and honours its place in a democratic polity. Still the examples I have given should serve as a grim warning. True, the democratic temperament has got implanted on the Indian soil. But this could not be taken for granted. Even a small example of Bonapartism should be probed thoroughly. The armed forces are for the country's defence and the decision to use them rests with the elected government. This is something basic and no compromise can be made in a democratic structure. happy families, the husband and wife both respect each other. No lying: Being honest brings peace into the world. When there is a misunderstanding, the best thing is to talk it over. This precept includes no gossip, no back-biting, no harsh words and no idle speech. No intoxicants: The fifth precept is based on keeping a clear mind and a healthy body. One day, when the Buddha was speaking the Dharma for the assembly, a young drunkard staggered into the room. He tripped over some monks who were sitting on the floor and started cursing loudly. His breath reeked of alcohol and filled the air with a sickening stench. Mumbling to himself, he reeled out the door. Everyone was astonished at his rude behavior, but the Buddha remained calm. “Great assembly!” he spoke, “Take a look at this man! He will certainly lose his wealth and good name. His body will grow weak and sickly. Day and night, he will quarrel with his family and friends until they abandon him. The worst thing is that he will lose his wisdom and become stupid.” Little by little, one can learn to follow these precepts. If one sometimes forgets them, one can start all over again. Following the precepts is a lifetime job. If one kills or hurts someone’s feelings by mistake, that is breaking the precepts, but it was not done on purpose. – Buddha

Virat's valiant men fought in vain THOUGH Team India lost the match against Pakistan in the last over in a nail-biting finish with two balls to spare, it needs to be said to the credit of Virat's 'men in blue' that they fought valiantly till the end and brought to the fore a very tight bowling performance which changed the runs needed vs. balls available equation from a hopeless 122 runs with 155 balls to 10 runs in six balls at the end. In the ultimate analysis, their No.11 batsman, Junaid Khan had all the luck in the world not only to survive Ashwin's second ball of the last over after he had bowled their No.10 with the previous ball but to manage a single to enable the dangerous Afridi to take strike. And the 'Old Fox', with nearly 400 ODIs behind him, rose to the occasion like a colossus and lofted two sixes to settle the score for the delirious Pakistan's supporters. Had Virat brought all the fielders to crowd round the last batsman's bat, that crucial one run could have been probably prevented. Dhoni was indeed missed as a wicket-keeper -Dinesh Karthik is far too inexperienced. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane
DITCH THEM: If Congress is not given at least 15 seats in Bihar for LS polls, the party should review its alliance with Lalu Prasad Yadav's RJD.
Lalu's firm offer RASHTRIYA Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav's ultimatum to Congress Party by offering only 11 seats out of 40 seats in Bihar Lok Sabha is nothing but dictating his own terms and conditions after his release from the jail in the fodder scam. I strongly feel that Congress Party should not surrender to RJD and its chief Lalu's order and must demand for minimum of 15 seats failing which the Congress Party which has very good relationship with Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar and his party Janata Dal (United) must review the alliance talks as Lalu will be rejected by the people of Bihar for being corrupt and involved in big scams. It is high time Congress Party should not bow down in front of the RJD and have very tough talk with Lalu for its seat adjustment failing which it must have alliance with JD(U) to teach RJD a very strong lesson in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai
Playing the political game I have observed last week on television that there are several ex-armed
I cannot fathom the hue and cry made over the cricket players crying themselves hoarse over the case of excessive appealing and the umpires wagging an admonitory "finger" at them by showing them red and green cards leaving them red faced! I particularly feel that the punitive measures employed by the umpires are not in any way puny and rather too harsh on the players and does not commensurate with the degree of offence that has been committed if at all there is a hint of an offence. The fact that the cricketers are handsomely paid does not mean that they should be made to pay through their nose in terms of fines or debarred from playing for a certain number of matches. Of course it is another matter if the players are deliberately making a noise to prevent the umpires from hearing a nick to the keeper or any other fielder or a nick to the pads in terms of an LBW appeal. However if I am not mistaken I believe that a batsman cannot be given out if there has been no appeal therefore any person is well within his rights to appeal, whether vociferous or muted.
HIT and run approach must come automatically and the batsmen should be in a position to sacrifice their wickets in case of need and go for big shots. The way Karthik made 23 of 46 balls and Rahane stuck around for 50 balls for 23 runs. In all there was no urgency in a do and die attitude and the pedestrian approach put paid the hopes. Beating minnows Bangladesh and Afghanistan make only sense for Team India. Skipper Virat Kohli ran out of ideas and when Pakistan wickets were falling Kohli counted the chickens, but in the end the momentum could not be sustained and the fateful last over made all the difference. Instead of allowing all the out of form batsmen up in the order, Kohli ought to have brought the pinch hitter concept to make runs against the likes of Hafeez, Ajmal and Talha. Lack of proper planning cost us heavily and we did not have an answer to the dew factor, the ball change and the much talked about toss. Dropped catches and misfielding all made the difference and there is only backdoor entry available for Team India.

forces personnel who have decided to get into the game of politics. This seems to be a recent and unexpected trend as it has hardly ever happened before in all our years as an independent country. Perhaps, this is the first mini step towards getting to know the intricacies of politicking. I feel that the present scenario calls for major overhauls in the country and the only way this can be done is if it is quickly achieved. This calls for revolutionary tactics and if the armed forces are getting into the game and their intentions are as honorable as their service records, it can be predicted that there is a revolution down the road that may salvage our situation, get rid of the trash and give us back our peace of mind and a will to take the country forward to its ultimate goals as a world leader.

ERROR-PRONE: Though Team India fought bravely till the last over, dropped catches and misfielding made all the difference against Pakistan on Sunday.
PLAY for a win whether it is Pakistan or Afghanistan. Instead of that Indian Team is fighting for run rate, run quotient and waiting for the result of Team A losing to Team B to get a backdoor entry. Even though India Pakistan match was a nail-biter, the outcome of the match on Sunday appears to be an expected one as the much fancied side was outplayed against better sides. The Dirty Details You keep your home spick-and-span with spotless floors, shiny countertops and sparkling windows. But when you go to work, a tidy desk in no way means that your workplace is clean. In fact, workplace hygiene is relatively dodgy and is often disregarded. That's why Shirley Mistry & Dev Goswami tell you what spots in your office could put you at risk of illnesses and diseases and what you can do about them
Y
ou've been sneezing and coughing all day long due to a cold that you think you're suffering from due to bad weather. However, a few hours after you leave your office and reach the safe confines of your home, the cold all but disappears. If this sounds familiar than it’s a sign that your office is not conducive to good health. When you spend a third of your day in a closed room/ location where the air is constantly being recirculated and another third of your day travelling through pollutionheavy Mumbai, you can take it for granted that your chances of falling sick are going to rise. However, you can’t control factors such as the weather and pollution and they are also not necessarily the biggest reason for you falling ill. It is, in fact, a myth that rapidly changing temperatures can cause a cold — it might worsen your condition and increase your risk, but it doesn't directly make you sick. So, instead of blaming the weather or complaining about the rising pollution levels, what you should be doing is taking steps to ensure that the place where you spend most of your week is hygienic and safe from disease-causing germs and bacteria. In this article, we tell you about the problems that can arise from working in a dirty, unhygienic environment, places in your office that look clean but are actually just the opposite, steps you can take to stay safe and for those who aren't convinced by words, we bring you numbers that will convince you to take better care of your surroundings at work.
>> A colleague passing you his/her cold is one of the easiest way you can end up falling sick
what’s the problem? Let's take a specific look at how your office can harm your health. These are a few problems a dirty office can lead to:
Cold & Cough: Unsurprisingly, this is the number one condition you're at risk of at office. Staying in a room with recirculated air is dangerous on its own. Add sick colleagues and it means that it just takes one person to sneeze or cough to put the entire office at risk of catching the bug.
spoilt food: No we aren't talking about the cook in the office pantry with a dubious hygiene reputation (though that could be a problem too). We are talking about Continued on pg 14 «

>> Bad habits, such as eating at your desk, means that your keyboard is five times dirtier than a toilet seat
how storing food at your office isn't the best of ideas. You can't be sure if the refrigerator is in a good enough working condition and leaving food outside carries the risk of insects and sometimes, icky pests (more on that later) attacking it.
germs spread easily: While the air is one of the several ways germs can spread in an office, it is not the only way. From the communal coffee pot or kettle to keyboards and bathroom doors, any location which has a number people touching/ using it, puts you at risk of catching harmful germs or bacteria.
sKin rashes: This is related to the previous point. If your keyboard is too dirty, it might transfer germs to your hands and fingers. Now, whenever you hold your head against your hand (as you might tend to do in front of your computer) you put yourself at risk of getting skin rashes. The risk is not high, but it is something that you should be on guard against.
pesTs & insecTs: Just because you can't see them, doesn't mean they don't exist. And if you can see them, well then you should do something about it. Pronto. Carelessly leaving food lying around, stagnant water in bathrooms and potted plants and garbage bins that aren’t cleared every day; all this can lead to dangerous mosquitoes, disease causing rats and those pesky little fruit flies. It is not only a verdict on the unhygienic work environment, but can also put you at risk of serious medical ailments.
The WorsT offenders Now that you know what can go wrong at your workplace, let's get to how it happens. We tell you what places germs and bacteria call home, at your office:
mousepad: That soft suede-like fabric is great to the touch, but that comfy fabric is also host to lots of bacteria and dust. Want proof? Dust your mousepad and you'll see the cloud of dust that follows. Apart from breeding bacteria that cause the flu and food poisoning, the dust trapped in a mousepad can give you bouts of sneezing. Make sure you clean your mouse and mousepad often and change your mousepad every three months — especially if you use one with a sponge. The bacteria and dust penetrate so deep, it is virtually impossible to clean it 100%.
door, handles, Knobs: If you share a set of drawers with your colleague, use the office microwave or the water faucet, be prepared for an onslaught of germs. These, coupled with doors, conference room chairs, electric kettles and air conditioner remotes are used by a lot of people. But, do you ever see anyone cleaning them? In all likelihood, the answer is no. Your best bet is to either minimise your usage, or sanitise/ wash your hands immediately after you do. What goes on while your food is being heated in the microwave, is a story for another day.
Keyboard: Right from crumbs from your breakfast bagel, to dust and other odds and ends, literally everything, manages to find its way into your keyboard. The spaces between the keys are a literal health hazard. Thousands of bacteria nestle their way in, and transfer onto your fingers every time you type. How bad is this? Well, some experiments suggest that the bacteria breeding here are The essenTials
Now that you know how to tackle the situation, here's what you need to have in your bag/ handbag at all times:
a sanitiser: Don't get one that only smells nice. Ensure you're picking a reliable brand that is going to get rid of the germs versus just making your hands smell like gingerbread. Also, sanitise before and after you eat or touch common facilities like a faucet or refrigerator door. Lastly, keep the sanitiser in a place in your handbag where you can easily find it when you need it. Rummaging around looking for the bottle is the worst. Wet wipes: Not only are they thoroughly refreshing after a hot day in the sun, they are great to disinfect your workspace too. If you must eat at your desk, pull out a wipe and swipe your desk clean instantly. Tissues: A pack of tissues are great for spills that later dry up and attract flies and other insects. Also, spread some on your desk before you start eating. Keep at work: At work, store a small bottle of disinfectant spray and clean cloths so that you can give your desk a wipe-down as and when required. Also, keep a big bottle of hand sanitiser on your desk so that you remember to use it.
more dangerous than those on your toilet seat! While there is no concrete proof to support that claim, they most certainly can cause vomiting, diarrhea and even E.Coli. Here's what you need to do: at least once a week (twice is ideal), turn your keyboard upside down and tap furiously to get the crumbs and odd-bits out. If this doesn't work, take a sticky note and stick it between the rows of keys to catch big dust mites. Follow-up with a paintbrush to really get in between the rows and remove the dust. Then, use a liquid disinfectant on a damp cloth and wipe every key. Use a Qtip to reach the awkward corners.
endless cables & Wires: If like some unfortunate people, you too suffer from multiple sneezing fits a day, it is probably because of a tangle of cables and wires connected to your computer. Take an hour to sort out the mess and wipe them down instead of leaving them to hang loose. Not only do they attract dust bunnies that cause sneezing fits, they are also perfect for spiders looking for a new home. your desK: You get to work and plonk your bag/ helmet on it. You eat at your desk. You keep a whole bunch of papers, boxes, pen stands, calendars and memos on your desk. If you haven't already figured it out, these are great breeding grounds for dust and bacteria. A typical desk has around 10 million bacteria. At the end of each week, wipe down your entire desk. Be sure to include anything that is on it, whether it’s your monitor, pen stand or photo frame. Also, a clean, dry cloth does not make the cut. Use a disinfecting spray liberally. Also wipe down any walls or beams that are adjacent to your desk. If you have a pinboard, scrub away, because cloth attracts a lot of dust too! Also, stop eating at your desk. Not only are you more likely to ingest the bacteria, but stray crumbs attract ants, flies and even rats — which will put others at risk too! The oThers: Things like telephones and trays also have staggering amounts of germs. Clean them frequently to minimise risk of disease. As far as toilets are concerned, there is much in terms of enforcement that you can do. However, it pays off to have a janitor especially assigned to take care of the cleanliness of the toilets, twice or thrice a day. some sTaTisTics
>> Periodically wipe your desk with disinfectant to keep it germ-free
If this article wasn't a rude enough shock already, here are some disturbing facts about dirty workplaces: l There are 21,000 germs per square inch on your keyboard. l Your keyboard is five times dirtier than your toilet seat. l Your computer mouse is three times dirtier than your office seat. l A typical desk has 10 million bacteria, which is 100 times more than the germs on a dining table and a staggering 400 times more than the germs on a toilet seat. l And then, on an average, we touch our face 16 times every hour. l Men's workplaces are 20% dirtier than women's workplaces. l Lastly, one in every three people go to work when they are sick, thereby exposing everyone else to the germs.

>> Surprisingly, cereal is not a good breakfast option

Rise & shine
While eating breakfast is essential, what you eat is equally important. Shirley Mistry tells you what foods to avoid and what you should tuck into instead
B
reakfast is the most important meal of your day because it instantly boosts your metabolic rate and kick starts your day on the right note. When you skip breakfast, you end up eating more at your next meal — a big no-no, especially if you are trying to lose weight. You've often heard these facts and so, you do the right thing and get up each morning and tuck into breakfast before you head out to tackle the day. However, what you don't realise is that eating the right breakfast makes a ton of a difference as well. Read on to find out some breakfast foods that need to be ditched and what you should eat instead.
PANcAkes & sAusAGes So, you wake up one morning and decide to whip up a batch of pancake batter to last you for breakfast for the next two or three days. Add in some sausages and you have a treat for breakfast. While an occasional indulgence is perfectly fine, don't get used to either of these breakfast items. Pancakes are packed with sugar and carbohydrates from refined flour, whereas sausages have a lot of salt and preservatives, additional flavourings and colours that you will find in most processed foods. If you must have pancakes, try making them with red millet flour instead. Substitute the sausages with eggs and you will be much better off.
PurI/ kAchorI & sAbzI Hot, fluffy puris or kachoris, dunked in a spicy potato gravy are tempting, but extremely unhealthy. While they are truly scrumptious (there's no denying that), puris are made out of maida, which is then deep fried — double the trouble we say! It is guaranteed to make you sleepy and sluggish in a matter of hours. If you prefer kachoris, worry more, as they are not only deep fried and made of flour, additional fat is added to the dough either in the form of oil or ghee. Eat whole wheat chappatis with sabzi instead. We know it isn't a patch on a puri, but it will keep full for longer and also give you more energy.
cereAl Sweetened breakfast cereals are an American favourite, but are now a staple in most Indian houses too. It is fast, easy and fuss-free, making it the perfect breakfast when you have to rush to college or work. So, we hate to break
it to you, but despite what cereal brands would love to have you believe, cereal isn't healthy. It has so much going wrong for it. First, while cereal is manufactured, high heat and pressure is applied to the grains to turn them into loops or flakes, which kills most of the nutrients the grains have. Second, whenever you read the word 'fortified' on a cereal box, it means that additional vitamins (that are synthetic) are added to the cereal to inject some nutrition into them. However, human bodies aren't designed to digest most of these nutrients and immediately eliminate them as toxic waste. We recommend you make your own almond granola (it is easier than you think) and enjoy it with milk for breakfast. If you must have packaged cereal, try muesli instead.
orANGe juIce Think you're giving your child's breakfast a boost with a glass of OJ (or any other juice)? Packaged juices are full of artificial flavour, colour and preservatives and more often than not, contain little or no real fruit juice at all. It will only fill you or your child up with empty calories and lead to a sugar rush and later, a sugar crash. You and your family are much better off eating the actual fruit, which gives you all the vitamins, nutrients and fibre.
DosAs There are fewer things as satisfying as breaking off a piece of a crisp dosa, but they aren't healthy. Dosas consist of rice and dal, but, the rice to dal ratio is usually 2:1, which means there is a lot more rice than dal in it. Also, the crunchy texture is achieved by cooking it in ghee or oil to let it crisp up. Couple it with the potato stuffing and you have a good dose of carbs first thing in the morning. Admittedly, dosas aren't as unhealthy as the other items on this list, but there is a sure way of making them so much healthier. Before you make your dosas, grind sunflower seeds, flax seeds, wheat bran, sesame seeds and oats to a coarse or fine powder (depending on your preference) and mix it in with the batter. You will be able to pack in a lot more fibre and vitamins, without compromising on an old breakfast favourite. And believe us when we say, you can still get a crisp dosa, without dousing it in oil. In fact, just a few drops of oil will do the trick!
« know moRe: ChoColate foR bReakfast anyone? A chocolate a day (at breakfast) keeps cravings away — at least that's what a scientific study will have us believe. But, Glynda Alves & Dev Goswami separate fact from fiction by testing the theory
A
study says that if you eat chocolate for breakfast, it will keep the cravings at bay for the rest of the day. Sounds improbable right? So, we investigated the claim by trying out the theory ourselves:
“It works... sort of”
To say that I was sceptical about the theory would be an understatement. I was so sure that it wouldn't work that I was excited to try it just so that I could prove the theory wrong. I had been craving an ice-cream sandwich for several days — especially after lunch — before
I tried this out. On D-Day, I had a bar of chocolate for breakfast and went about my usual routine. Come lunch and the desperate craving for an ice-cream sandwich was, surprisingly, not present. And I actually had an ice-cream sandwich sitting in the refrigerator! However, it wasn't as if my cravings completely disappeared. I did end up eating the icecream sandwich, although later in the day. So, while the theory seems to work, I don't think it has that great an effect. Also, it constantly makes you think about sweets, which can lead to hunger (even if the thought is “I am not
supposed to crave sweets?”) My advice? Skip this theory and work on improving your willpower instead. — Dev Goswami
“Not for me”
Chocolate cake, instead of porridge or idlis. The idea sounded too good to be true. Studies have shown that people who give into their cravings in the morning are likely to feel satiated and less likely to consume sugary treats through their day. I have a major sweet tooth and was more than eager to try this out. So, out came the
chocolate for breakfast. So far so good. But, post lunch, I had my usual cravings for something sweet and unfortunately, gave in. Tea time was no better and dessert after dinner seemed like a good idea. This test was a major failure for me. The chocolate for breakfast got my sweet tooth started and it just kept going right through the day. In fact, I have better self control on days when I eat chocolate at the end of my day. It lets me look forward to something and I tend to “save” my calories for the treat. So, cake for breakfast? No thanks! — Glynda Alves

Are you one of those pet owners who love to kiss their pets? Well, does Glynda Alves have news for you!
« 10 ways to:
1. Do you kiss your dog on the mouth on a regular basis? a. Yes. b. No. Ugh!
4. Do you wear clothes that your pet has taken a nap on? a. Yes. b. No.
2. Does your dog share your bed with you, including the covers? a. Yes. b. No.
5. Do you feed your pet in the same dishes you eat from? a. Yes. b. No.
3. Do you feed your dog tidbits from the table and then eat with the same hand? a. Yes. b. No.
6. Do you brush your dog’s teeth and give him a bath regularly? a. No. b. Yes.
THE ULTIMaTE CURE This isn't for everyday use and we recommend you only consider it if you have a deep, painful cystic acne breakout or it's near your wedding day. For deep pimples, your best option is to call your dermatologist for a cortisone injection. This solution is injected straight into the pimple and reduces swelling while killing the bacteria. Ah! Sweet revenge.
BEat a BREaKoUt Like annoying relatives, breakouts have the habit of turning up at the wrong moment, sending you into a panic. But, one of these remedies is sure to help you out. Glynda Alves gives you her top picks
DOn’T UsE TOOTHPasTE Before we get into what you should do to zap a zit, we're telling you what not to do. Skip the toothpaste because even though it may work for some, acne prone skin is sensitive and a strong toothpaste left on a zit overnight will burn your skin and cause it to become red and inflamed. Keep toothpaste for your teeth only.
1
JUsT CHILL! We mean this literally! To calm irritation, you need to cover the pimple and the surrounding area with a cold, wet washcloth. You can also use a cold, wet teabag. Tea contains antioxidants, which reduce inflammation and can actually shrink the pimple.
2
UsE COTTOn bUDs If you feel that your pimple is ready to pop and you can't resist (try to though), only squeeze using cotton buds to apply the pressure. Do not use your nails or an extraction tool. These will not only damage your skin but infect it with germs, resulting in a bigger problem than the one you started with.
LOVIng LEMOns Sometimes, going natural is the best! Lemon juice is a great way to zap a zit overnight. Sure, it burns, but you only need a little to see results. Slice a lemon and gently rub it over the affected area. The citric acid kills the bacteria and shrinks pores.
5
gO bananas You may think we've gone bananas, but many people swear by this method to reduce the size of an exceptionally large pimple. Banana peels are used to treat mosquito bites, so why not pimples?! Gently rub a banana peel over your skin and keep the goo on overnight.
3
4
gaRLIC THE gREaT We all know the benefits of garlic when consumed, but this spicy ingredient can help you on the surface as well. Cut a clove of garlic in half and gently dab it on your pimple and the surrounding area. Don't wash it off. This method has been tried and tested and can shrink even the most stubborn zit.
say HELLO TO HaLDI This yellow powder has numerous health benefits but it can be used for beauty purposes as well. Mix a pinch of haldi with a drop of coconut oil (so that the yellow powder doesn't stain your face) and with a cotton swap, lightly apply it on your pimple. Leave it on overnight and your pimple would have shrunk by morning. Promise!
8 sPEEDy saLICyLIC If natural remedies don't seem to work for you, then try using a 1% or 2% percent salicylic acid facewash. This mild wash is a bit drying so make sure to use a moisturiser after.
MOsTLy as You know how people say that a dog's mouth is cleaner than a human's mouth? Wrong. We would think the stinky doggie breath would make it obvious. But, your relationship with your pet, while you may consider it loving, is actually quite gross. You can get all sorts of worms from kissing your pet (just think about the areas they lick!) as well as

illnesses and diseases if they have fleas and you sleep with them! Love your pet, but not at the risk of your health. MOsTLy bs You understand that loving your pet doesn't mean you have to tip toe the lines of hygiene. Good for you! You take care of your pet and love it, but don't go overboard with your affections.

ou've restricted television, made sure your children join an exercise class and gotten rid of the junk food from their diet. Happy that you've done a good job as a parent, you kick your shoes off, complain about what a hard day you've had and relax in front of your big-screen television with a much-deserved drink and a big bag of wafers, while your children grudgingly finish their homework in the background before skulking off to bed. Fast forward a few years and it seems like you've lost control! Your children are always fighting with each other, they've abandoned reading to stare at the laptop for hours on end, refuse to go outside, complain all the time and if you find another empty candy wrapper in their pockets, you might scream. >> Setting a good example for your children goes hand in hand with teaching them good habits and values
to yourself! Let your children be fearless, within reason. If you make your fears clear, children are automatically scared to do certain things, even if it's something as simple as speaking in front of an audience.
gET Off THE COUCH
Don't reach for a drink every evening and avoid resorting to alcohol when you're in a bad mood. Creating an ‘alcohol is a sin’ attitude is not right either. Your children will go overboard when they decide to experiment — especially because they won't be able to talk to you about it. Teach them that while there's nothing wrong with drinking, they shouldn't make it a habit. Moderation is the key here.
The Mayo Clinic found that children who watch more than two hours of television a day are at risk of behavioural difficulties and impaired performance? So, get your children outdoors, teach them how much fun activities and games can be and de-stress by reading instead of watching TV. And, since we mentioned reading, make sure your children read every day, whether you like to read or not. It's an important foundation for their future.

It's important not to show children your dislike for vegetables and fruits. Instead of reaching for snacks,
keep vegetable sticks and nuts handy. It's a little extra effort, but worth it. Shop by food labels and nutritional levels so your children realise that this is important.
EaT TOgETHER
Sure, it's difficult to get the family together every single night. But, have at least one night of the week when you eat together as a family. This will strengthen bonds, you'll eat better and be a happier family. And make sure no one leaves the table till you're all done — even if there's a slow eater at the table!
bE POsITIVE
Children pick up everything. You don’t realise it, but they are the most sensitive to your attitudes, fears and mannerisms. If you're always talking about how hard life is, criticising yourself and others around you, your children will begin to think that that's normal and maybe even emulate you.

« KnoW more: exercising after dinner Studies are conflicted about the benefits of exercising after dinner. Rhea Dhanbhoora asks fitness experts what they recommend
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, MARCH 4, 2014
Wake me up!
Find it impossible to get out of bed every morning even though you set your alarm? Then read this article as Dev Goswami tells you about clocks that are guaranteed to wake you up
>> Have normal alarms failed in their jobs to get you up? Then its time you think about buying one of these
F
or years, experts have been advising us to avoid exercising at night, telling us that our bodies slow down as the day progresses, making mornings the best time to squeeze in your workout. But, for most busy professionals in the city, finding time for a fitness routine before work is not easy. You might feel more active in the day, but is exercising at night really a bad idea? And should we be doing it before, or after dinner? We ask fitness experts to give us the answer.
Prakash Sawant, fitness expert, Superb Fitness:
“These days, our lives are hectic with long work hours and stress levels at an all-time high. In fact, thanks to call centres, Indians are working American hours in India. So, how do you strike a balance? Exercise is a good way to be healthy and stay fit, keeping those dreaded lifestyle diseases at bay. Workouts are good at any time of the day, so while everyone says that exercise is best in the morning, several researchers have proven that exercise at any time of the day is just as beneficial. In fact, I recommend a late evening workout for those looking to drop weight. Our body burns the most amount of calories while we sleep and exercising for about 45 minutes to an hour after dinner increases your metabolism, which helps you burn more fat while you sleep. But, it is important to have your dinner by 8pm to ensure that you don’t sleep on a full stomach, as that will keep your body busy with digestion and you will not get the full benefits of a restful sleep. Additionally, you should ensure that you sleep for atleast 6-8 hours as that is the time your body needs to recuperate. A disciplined lifestyle along with a balanced diet will ensure you stay healthy and fit, no matter what time you exercise.”
Frank Mapranny, training director from YFC gym:
“You need to exercise on a daily basis, so if the only free time you get is after dinner, then go for it. I suggest that you wait for an hour after eating before attempting to exercise, so that your food has been properly digested. However, having a post-workout meal is important to help you in recovery, so remember to eat after your workout too.”

Women's Wellness Alzheimer's disease is a form of dementia where you have to deal with memory loss, usually the type that accompanies ageing. It can get worse with time because unfortunately, there is no cure. The reason that women are more at risk is because when women reach menopause, the levels of estrogen in their bodies decreases and this is a known factor in increasing the risk of the disease.
Kidney problems This has a little more to it than meets the eye. While the men around you may be more at risk of suffering from chronic kidney disease on an average, if you're hitting menopause or going through pre-menopause, you are more at risk. If you're diabetic, your risk increases even further. Georgetown University's Center for the Study of Sex Differences in Health, Aging and Disease research showed that as a woman, because you lack testosterone, kidney disease progresses faster if you also suffer from diabetes.

>> Every year, 8.6 million women die of heart disease
We're celebrating women all this month and so to kick it off, Rhea Dhanbhoora brings you 10 issues that hamper the health of women
W
hile not many illnesses or diseases are male or female specific, some affect men more, while with some, women are at a higher risk. The following 10 issues have been in the spotlight over the last few years because the risk for women has increased. Take a look at what you need to protect yourself from:
hearT disease Every year, 8.6 million women die of heart disease, according to a study done by The Women's Heart Foundation. Although it is a very serious concern for both men and women, heart attacks can strike women much harder and with no prior warning at all. Of all the diseases and illnesses mentioned on this list, it ranks as one of the highest concerns.
diabeTes Put that dessert down, even if you're still young, because as a woman, you are at a greater risk of contracting this than the men in your life. Although it's highest among Asian-Americans and Hispanic women, you are still at risk. This is because when you're pregnant, you could suffer from what is known as gestational diabetes.
This puts you at a higher risk of developing type-2 diabetes later in life.
The flu Yes, you read that right. Influenza and pneumonia are both serious illnesses that you should not take lightly, especially since they've been found to be more prevalent amongst women. Those with weaker immune systems are obviously more at risk, but even pregnant and elderly women should be careful.
injuries Don't be a klutz — especially if you're a woman! This might sound unbelievable, but injuries are some of the most common causes of death! It sounds sinister, but we're not trying to scare you. Just be careful you don't have too many falls, crashes or accidents and definitely watch your step.
alzheimer’s disease This is a common disease and although women in Europe have been shown to have a higher risk of this, the bad news for women in Asia is that they have a higher risk than men of contracting this illness.
Whenever we talk about strokes, we often talk about them from a male perspective but in reality, three million women across the world die of a stroke every year. This puts women at a higher risk than men, with the chances climbing steadily from the time they are 45-years-old. This doesn't mean that younger women are less prone, especially with our hectic, chaotic daily lives. Slow down and protect yourself from the disease as early as you can.
ChroniC lower respiraTory diseases COPD, also known as chronic obstructed pulmonary disease as well as chronic bronchitis, affects women more than men. In fact, they all have different risk factors, symptoms and diagnosis in women as compared with men. If you're a smoker, you're at an even higher risk.
« know more: Freezing your eggs
You may not be thinking of having a baby, but freezing your eggs while you’re young gives you the option to change your mind in the future, says Rhea Dhanbhoora
D
id you know that unlike men’s bodies which regularly produce new sperm, women's bodies do not keep producing new eggs? Women are born with a certain amount of eggs and they stay at that amount, your entire life. The one thing that does happen is that they begin to age, even before you are close to menopause. And if you have a bad lifestyle, they age and die out even faster — which is why people stress on the importance of having children earlier and why several women are opting to freeze their eggs if they cannot make that sort of commitment yet. Women who freeze their eggs before they are 35-years-old have more of a chance of a live birth later on, since younger eggs freeze better.
The proCedure
While freezing sperm is easy for men, freezing your eggs takes a little more time and effort. You have to inject yourself with medication for around 10 days, visit your doctor several times for check-ups and follow-ups and finally, your eggs are harvested and frozen in a procedure that might leave you feeling a little sore and cramped. They choose between 10 and 20 eggs, so don't worry about paying all that money just for one.
The bad
Freezing your eggs doesn't guarantee that you will be able to have a child. The eggs might not survive the process and even if they do, they might not mix with your future partner’s sperm or even attach to your uterus when they're implanted later. In fact, there are so many doubts revolving around the process that The American Society for Reproductive Medicine still hasn't endorsed it.
CanCer Cancer hits more women than men. The American Cancer Society found that women have a rate of 26% deaths with lung cancer, 15% with breast cancer and 9% with colorectal cancer, although they are also at risk of several other types of cancer. It's never to early to start preventing them.
sepTiCaemia This is the last one on our list and it's incredibly woman specific. In 2009, Miss World pageant finalist from Brazil, Mariana Bridi da Costa, died of this disease after her urinary tract infection progressed to it. It's actually blood poisoning and can affect the healthiest of women. It's caused when bacteria get into the blood stream and can be triggered by malnutrition, open wounds, substance abuse or even urinary tract infections — which are common amongst women.
The reason To go for iT
The only real risk you're taking here is financially, with prices running into several lakhs. You have to pay for the procedure (which can cost anywhere upwards of `20,000), as well as an annual fee every year to keep your eggs frozen. Although there's no way to know for sure, there is a test that tells you whether it's worth the risk at all. If you're worried about 'losing eggs' to the process — you should know that eggs that are not fertilised die anyway, so you're actually preserving more than you're losing. Most importantly, make sure that you're freezing your eggs in a hospital which has success stories. Don't opt for cheaper options because you might actually end up spending a lot over nothing in the long run. Your biological clock won't stop and wait for you to make up your mind so until you do this is your best option if you have the financial means.

>> Wear gloves when you wash dishes to keep your skin from peeling
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, MARCH 4, 2014
Beauty that ages Most of us go through our skin care routine, without giving it a second thought (men are notoriously famous for this). However, some habits can age your skin, says Shirley Mistry. Read on to find out what you should avoid
T
here are several things that you use as part of your skincare routine. Apart from products, the techniques you follow can greatly age your skin as well. Using too many products or skimping on some will affect the way your skin matures. Read on to find out the habits that age your skin much faster than you'd want it to.
dear Barbara, I have observed that the skin on my finger tips has started to peel. The rest of my skin is fine, it is just my fingertips that suffer. I thought it could because of household chores such as washing dishes or putting my hands in soapy water and so, I have started using thick, rubber gloves. However, it hasn't helped, but the condition doesn't seem to be getting any worse either. Do I need to visit a doctor? — reshma kapadia, matunga dear reshma, Peeling skin could be due to a number of problems. However, in your case, it’s because your hands are exposed to soapy water that is full of chemicals. You've taken the first step by using rubber gloves. Your next step should be to treat the damaged skin. First, use warm water to soak your fingers — this will not only moisturise the skin but will also make dry skin fall off. Next, ensure that you regularly moisturise your hands with a good hand cream. You could also use olive oil, either mixed with water or just plain. Another remedy is to rub slices of cucumber against your skin. If none of this helps, you could be suffering from a skin condition. It would be advisable to see a doctor.
Not moisturisiNg your lips While you may remember to use a good moisturiser on your face, moisturise your lips regularly as well. Don't wait for them to get dry and scaly before you start moisturising. Dry lips are uncomfortable and flaky skin makes you want to bite your lips all the more. Beware as this habit increases the amount of fine lines on your skin, making it look aged.
too much steam We all like steaming our faces or a session in the sauna, as it is refreshing and relaxing. However, keep these visits far and few. Frequently indulging in a sauna or steam session makes your skin sag, as it breaks down your skin’s natural collagen and elasticity, making it droopy and visibly aged.
too maNy products So, you use two cleansers, wipes, a face
wash, a toner, serums, face oils and face creams? Don't be too pleased with yourself. While you may think you have all your bases covered, in reality, using too many products on your skin is a bad idea. Going overboard with products can aggravate your skin, confuse it and make it appear dull and tired. Moreover, it may also cause you to breakout into pimples and lead to scarring.
igNoriNg your Neck While you concentrate on your face, don't forget to extend the moisturiser or any other skin care product down to your neck. If you are using an antiageing product, this becomes even more important. Even application of products on both your face and neck is highly underrated.
switchiNg too sooN How often have you bought a new anti-ageing serum, used it for two weeks, didn't find any difference and thus relegated it to the back of your dresser and tried another one the following week? Speak to a skin expert and they'll tell you that most skin care products take at least four weeks to show visible results because that is how long it takes for the product to penetrate your skin and work its magic. By switching products too often, you aren't giving them a chance to work on your skin. Anti-ageing products need up to six weeks to start working and
>> Going overboard with products can make your skin look dull and tired while ageing it faster
it takes your body around four months to start renewing its elasticity and collagen. So, stick to a product for at least a month before you dismiss it.
Not eNough suNscreeN Trust us when we say sunscreen is not a product you want to skip. Most good dermatologists will tell you that the sun is the number one cause for premature skin ageing. Apply a high factor sunscreen every morning — even if you are staying indoors, because the harmful UV rays will penetrate the glass of your windows. If you are headed out, be sure to reapply after 3-4 hours. We suggest investing in this product and getting a sunscreen with a broad spectrum, one that protects you from UVA and UVB rays and has an SPF of 40 and above. >> Use a good sunscreen all year round to protect your skin

EW DELHI: Despite some hiccups, an alliance between Congress and RJD for the Lok Sabha polls in Bihar appears on the cards and a decision is likely to be announced in a day or two. An indication to this effect was given by a senior Congress leader, who declined to be identified. Congress will go with a reliable friend and not anyone who is not tested, was the refrain of the leader who said that after some give and take, the alliance will be clinched sooner than later. He suggested that the Congress' talks with JD-U did not progress after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar put a pre-condition that the state should be given a special category status, an issue which is like opening a pandora's box. The AICC briefing saw party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi dismissing suggestions that RJD chief Lalu Prasad had given any time limit for Congress to accept his offer of 11 seats. Bihar has a total of 40 seats and RJD has remained the dominant partner in the tie-ups with Congress. "We are moving in the direction of what is proper and most effective for both Congress and RJD", said Singhvi who slammed Ram Vilas Paswan of the LJP for joining hands with BJP after having opposed Narendra Modi. with Paswan, Singhvi said that in the process of enlarging the NDA, the opposition party could accentuate the divide within as several state leaders are opposed to the LJP's entry. "I will not comment unless something concrete emerges on the issue," he said downplaying talk of a possible Congress-JD-U tieup. Regarding JD-U's pet demand for special category status for Bihar, he said that this is not a new demand and it is not only from Bihar but also from some other states. He said that the relevant Ministry will decide the issue "in accordance with established rules and procedures, which cannot be subverted for state A or B". "It is a technical matter which has to be decided by the Finance Ministry and the Planning Commission and the party has no comment on the issue", he said. Congress had fought the 2004 Lok Sabha election in alliance with RJD and Ram Vilas Paswan's LJP and they had won 29 of the 40 Parliamentary seats. In 2009, Congress fought alone as its alliance for Lok Sabha polls broke with RJD and LJP. While Paswan has aligned with BJP this time, RJD has asked Congress to decide on its offer of contesting 11 Lok Sabha seats. Lalu has assured Gandhi if Congress accepts the offer, he would deliver results in Bihar and Jharkhand.

Manufacturing Expands At Fastest Pace In Feb
By A Business Reporter
I
ndia's manufacturing sector expanded in February at the strongest pace in 12 months, driven largely by growth in new business orders and an improved macroeconomic situation, an HSBC survey said. The HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), a measure of factory production, stood at 52.5 in February, up from 51.4 in the previous month, signaling a solid and stronger improvement in business conditions across the country's manufacturing sector. Activity in the sector expanded
for the fourth consecutive month in February. A PMI reading above 50 indicates growth while a lower reading means contraction. "Manufacturing activity picked up further in February. New order flows have firmed, with the improvement in external demand and the reduction in macroeconomic uncertainty since last summer," HSBC Chief Economist for India & ASEAN Leif Eskesen said. Production growth accelerated on a stronger rise in incoming new work. The pace of output expansion was solid and the quickest in one year. Higher demand from both domestic and export clients boosted order flows in February. Eskesen,
however, noted that the recovery in manufacturing is still likely to prove "protracted" given the lingering structural constraints. On inflation, the report said input costs rose during February and subsequently, average tariffs were raised further last month. The annual rate of inflation, based on the monthly wholesale price index, eased to a seven-month low of 5.05 % in January. "Underlying inflation pressures remain potent, which was evident from the jump in the input price component of the PMI survey. This will keep RBI hawkish and likely compel it to raise rates a bit further this year," Eskesen said.
Mutual Funds' Exposure To IT Stocks Surge By A Business Reporter
T
he mutual fund industry is betting big on software companies as its equity exposure to the sector climbed to an all-time high of Rs 27,772 crore at the end of January 2014, accounting for 15.20 % of their total equity assets under management (AUM) of Rs 1.83 lakh crore, according to the Sebi data. In December, the investment of mutual funds in software companies was at
Rs 26,762 crore (13.84 %). Market participants attribute this continued inclination of mutual funds towards software segment to weakness in the rupee, revival of demand in key markets like the US and good performances by IT companies in the past few quarters. A weak rupee boosts value of dollars earned by IT firms. Deployment of funds by mutual funds in software stocks gained traction since May when the rupee came under pressure. The In-
Anti Smuggling Measures Leads To...
Harassment Of Jewellers By Mayura Shanbaug
T
he government’s move to control smuggling of gold into the country is only leading to harassment of gold traders and jewellers who are planning a nationwide ‘Bandh’ to highlight their plight on March 10th. According to Surendra Mehta, general secretary of India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA), since the price of gold has risen along with import restrictions, smuggling activities from the gulf region have escalated. To counter this, government agencies have started conducting physical checks on gold jewellers and traders in the country. “But they are targeting the wrong people as not a single gold trader or jeweller has been found guilty in those raids. But such checks just leads to harassment of jewellers who

have to shut down regular business to answer the queries by the investigating agencies,” Mehta points out. The gold traders are also of the opinion that some of the old acts which are still in existence should be done away with. “The customs act of 1962 needs to be amended according to the present situation. As per the rule, for every gram of gold which is imported, the jeweller or the traders needs to have a certificate to justify the import. This rule has long been outdated,” he said. According to Mehta, even banks have started importing gold now from whom the customer can directly buy. “So if the customer is reselling the gold to the jeweller, he cannot be expected to give an import certificate. Using this act, the officials harass the traders and impose penal charge on them, which is unfair,” he explains. With the smuggling activities on the rise, custom officials are also very cautious about clearing gold imports. “There are hundreds of tons of gold lying at the airport with officials going slow on clearing them. This is resulting in huge shortage of gold which may fuel a further rise in gold prices,” Mehta informs, adding that it’s not just the traders, but even banks are suffering as their import consignments are stuck at airports. “We want the government to look at the gold industry like any other. There is a huge discrimination as for any purchase over Rs 1 lakh, we have to furnish Pan card details, while consumer goods costing lakhs of rupees are transacted on a daily basis without needing any such fi-
dian currency has depreciated by around 15 % since April 30. "The mutual fund industry has been investing in the software shares because of weakness in the rupee and smart quarterly numbers posted by companies such as TCS, Infosys and Wipro, among others," Geojit BNP Paribas Financial Services Research Head Alex Mathews said. Another key factor was revival of demand in major markets, he added. nancial details of the trader or the customer. This also impacts our business,” he adds. The 20/80 scheme on gold imports whereby the importer would need to retain around 20 percent of the imports at customs bonded warehouses and will be allowed fresh imports of gold only after 75% of the metal stock is exported, is also impacting jewelers in a big way, he revealed. “We believe that nearly one crore of our skilled workers will be rendered jobless if such schemes are not seriously looked into,” Mehta said. To highlight all these issues, nearly 5 lakh bullion dealers and jewellery traders would observe 10th March as a Black day and organize a countrywide bandh.

India's top IT companies - TCS and Wipro - shelled out USD 510,000 (over Rs 3.15 crore) for lobbying on issues like immigration and trade with various government agencies in the US last year. ence to the basic movements in the Bharata Natyam style. Forming a fine synthesis of both music and melody in the Jatiswaram, Surabhi performed the Shabdam in praise of Lord Vishnu wherein the dancer as Meera talks to Lord Krishna and requests him to remove the sufferings of people and narrates episodes like Druapadi Vastraharnam, Gajendra Moksham, the lifting of mountain Govardhana etc. The Athana Varnam was in praise of Shivaji, the king of Tanjavur. The dancer is portrayed as Virahotkantitha as she is tormented by the cupid arrows and suffers the pangs of separation and requests her Lord to come immediately. This number was enacted with fine 'abhinaya' and the typical 'sancharis'. Surabhi
arfojiraje Bhosale Centre presented the debut Bhrata Natyam performance by talented Surabhi Parker at the Y.B.Chavan auditorium last Sunday. Surabhi's performance was marked with the quality of technical and expressional command over the dance style, besides the vivaciousness that made the recital sparkling. Parker is a disciple of renowned exponent Dr. Sanddhya Pureccha and has imbibed all the necessary qualities in order to blossom into a fine exponent. After invocaotry numbers like the Ganesh Stuti and Nataraja Kautam, Surabhi performed the Bilhari Alarippu in Tisrajathi, introducing the audi-
has an innate command over expressions and has the calibre to delve deeper into such thematic items which was further evident in Thaye Yasoda that dealt with 'vatsalya bhav'. While Kalai Thuki portrayed the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva as he dances on one foot, Vallabhacharya's Madhurastakam depicted Lord Krishna as an incarnate of sweetness and beauty. Besides the Panchaakshara shlokam in praiseof Lord Shiva, the Marathi Abhang too formed a rightful place in the programme. Surabhi concluded the programme with the Shankarabharam Thillana that formed a fine finale as the dancer danced to rhythmic intricate numbers. Surabhi recieved fine orchestral support too.

irector Pramod Achrekar’s debut film ‘Akalpit - Ek Satya Kalpanapalikadche’ is a rare suspense thriller that visits the realms of human mind. Vishal (Abhinay Sawant)and Shweta (Rutul Patil) are a happily married couple who visit their friend’s farmhouse which is desolate and filled with serial killer stories. Shweta and her boyfriend apparently plan to bump off her husband and get his riches and their love for each other. The film proceeds with chilling incidents like Vishal's wife and lover planning to get rid of Vishal by poisoning him, stabbing him
and getting a hit-man killer Raj (Sandesh Jadhav) to kill Vishal. But in this scenario comes another Raj whose car breaks down and seeks refuge in the farmhouse. Shweta assumes him to be the paid killer but what is the truth really when the police recover three bodies from the farmhouse and Vishal is accused of the murders? He pleas with an insanity claim. Then a committee with a High Court judge and the public prosecutor and a psychiatrist are trying to judge Vishal. He is let off but not before the psychiatrist analyses his college background, his paintings and his creative ideas and the circumstantial evidence but has no concrete proof against Vishal who gets away with the murder. It is assumed that Vishal is a dual personality and a schizophrenic but the prosecution can’t really pin him down. Director Achrekar has done a good job of a difficult subject. Veteran actors like Mohan Agashe, Nirmitee Sawant, Renuka Shahane do well. Abhinay Sawant is impressive as is Sumeet Gaikwad. Rutul Patil is good too. The music by rock band Parikrama is pleasing. DOP’S Amit Kodoth and Neeshank Mathure have shot the interiors with natural lighting and blue filters to create an eerie feeling. The film is for serious cinema buffs.

Raja Mansingh Tomar was himself a practitioner of the dhrupad genre. He actively supported music and musicians. Later on, the Malwa region which extended from Indore in the south to Gwalior in the north nurtured music in the most creative way. According to Kumar Gandharva, the folk tunes from this region formed the foundation of many a raga structures. Kumar Gandharva too lived in this region. Another towering musician who lived here was the late Rajab Ali Khansaheb. He belonged to the tradition enriched by Bande Ali Khan and Mugal Khan. Rajab Ali Khan lived

Sensible Afridi won us the game: Misbah M
IRPUR (BANGLADESH): Smiling ear to ear after upstaging arch-rivals India in the Asia Cup, Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq lavished praise on Shahid Afridi for his "sensible" cameo, saying that the flamboyant allrounder single-handedly clinched a game which had gone out the team's grasp. "I am very happy about Shahid Afridi, who has taken a lot of criticism in the last two matches. I think he showed experience and won us a game that almost went out of our control," the skipper said after the nail-biting one-wicket win here. In pursuit of 246, Pakistan were on course with Mohammad Hafeez's sparkling 75 but after the partnership was broken, they looked shaky before Afridi worked his magic in the end. "In my opinion, this was a very important win. We were under pressure with four wickets down but Hafeez and Sohaib Maqsood put together a partnership," Misbah said. "After that, Afridi finished the game in the way he did.We

"I think that time the game was in our hands in the second last over but after that it was quite difficult. Still, we knew that if Afridi can get strike back we will have a chance. He played very well. The last two sixes were tremendous." But before the match-winning sixes, Afridi seemed to have blundered by crossing over to get away from the strike when Mohammad Talha was dismissed off the last ball of the penultimate over. With Afridi at the other end, Pakistan needed 10 runs from five balls with one wicket in hand but last man Junaid Khan did the sensible thing of taking a single to give the all-rounder have been criticised for not the strike to finish it off. being able to chase well under "These things happen in a pressure. Sri Lanka cruise to final of Asia Cup
MIRPUR (BANGLADESH): Inform Sri Lanka sailed into the summit clash of the Asia Cup cricket tournament with a resounding 129-run victory over minnows Afghanistan. Opting to bat, the islanders rode on Kumar Sangakkara's patient 76 and skipper Angelo Mathews' breezy 41ball 45 to post a competitive 253/6 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. In reply, Afghanistan were bundled out for 124 in 38.4 overs, sealing Sri Lanka's place in the final of the fivenation continental tournament, and further diminishing India's chances.
India have lost two of their three matches and need to win with a bonus point against Afghanistan and hope that Bangladesh score an upset victory over Pakistan in their last respective round-robin matches. Afghanistan's runchase never really got the momentum as they lost wickets at regular intervals, slipping to 73 for five in the 21st over. Their batting was in stark contrast to the efforts put in by the Afghan bowlers, who kept the freeflowing Lankan batsmen in check for a major part of their innings before Mathews
let loose. Sangakkara, though, was the man who kept the Lankan innings afloat when the going got difficult. Afghan captain Mohammad Nabi contributed 37, while Noor Ali Zadran (21) and Asghar Stanikzai (27) got out after getting starts. Nabi hit three fours and a six during his 40-ball knock. The rest of the batting just caved in without putting up any sort of resistance, a far cry from their outing against hosts Bangladesh, who were humbled by the spirited strife-torn nation a couple of days ago.
rience of our team with their team, it's massive, it's huge. And in International cricket it really counts a lot. You can get away with it in Twenty20, but in the 50-over format you need to show a lot of character and that's exactly what the boys did," he added. Defending a modest 246, Indian bowlers, particularly Mishra (2/28 from 10 overs) and R Ashwin (3/44), took the match to the wire and Pakistan were left needing nine runs off the last four balls with one wicket in hand. But Afridi's big blows sealed the win which took Pakistan a step

closer to the final. Defending his decision to give Ashwin the last over, Kohli said: "I knew that if I put the seamers in before and Ashwin comes to bowl, they will go for it. Wickets are all we wanted. If Afridi and Umar Gul had just played singles they would have won easily. I took that risk of putting the seamers in and making them hit the ball. We almost pulled it off as well in the end. Those last two sixes were not quite off the middle of the bat. One side was a small boundary, but that's how it goes. We almost pulled it off."
SAINA LOOKS TO ALL ENGLAND WITH RENEWED VIGOUR

IRMINGHAM: Relieved after clinching a title following a year-long drought, Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal will renew her dream of winning the All England crown when the USD 400,000 Super Series Premier tournament gets underway at the National Indoor Arena here today. The only Indian to be seeded in the prestigious event, Saina will look to do one better after her semifinal finish at last year's Championships, in which her campaign was cut shot by Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon. After enduring a tough season, when she battled injuries and lack of form and could not win a single title, the World no. 7 Indian got her mojo back by winning the Syed Modi International GPG title in Lucknow in January. Saina, seeded seventh, has lost weight while preparing for the tournament and is confident of a good show as she opens her campaign against Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland. It is going to be a tough road ahead for Saina as she is likely to face German Juliane Schenk and fourth seed Shixian Wang in the next two rounds, provided she clears the opening hurdle. Saina's younger colleague, P V Sindhu, too, is in the fray and will begin with a clash against Yu Sun of China. The World Championship bronze medallist also has a very difficult task of taming second seed Chinese Yihan Wang in the next round. In the men's singles, Parupalli Kashyap and Kidambi Srikanth got direct entry into the main draw, but the duo will face an uphill task as they open their campaign against Japanese fifth seeded Kenechi Tago and Kento Momota, respectively. There are no other Indians currently in the

main draws of the other three categories. Saina told PTI: "I am well prepared. I got a month to train for All England and we had a good session. I feel I am back to my best and confident of doing well." "The draw is tough but initially I should do well and hopefully at least reach the quarterfinals. I have reached the semifinals two times and god willing I can better the performance," Saina said. "I got a good impetus from Lucknow and I worked a lot on
my fitness and right now I am in perfect shape. I had a good momentum during the practice matches as well." Indians vying for the main draw by participating in the qualifiers, include Anand Pawar, Saili Rane, Sanjeeth S and Jagadish Yadav (men's doubles), Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa (women's doubles), Tarun Kona and Ashwini Ponnappa (mixed doubles), Abhishek Ahlawat and Kristi Das (mixed doubles).
ULHEIM AN DER RUHR (GERMANY): Veteran Indian shuttler Arvind Bhat ended a seven-year title drought as he clinched the German Open Grand Prix Gold with a gruelling three-game upset triumph over 12th seed Dane HansKristian Vittinghus in the men's singles final here. Ranked 87th in the world, the 34-year-old Bhat 24-22 1921 21-11 in a one-hour contest to become the first Indian to come out trumps in this tournament. The former national champion dug from his huge reservoir of experience to outlast the Dane, who he was facing for the first time in his long career. The first game itself turned out to be a battle of attrition as the two shuttlers matched each other point for point. But it was the Indian who turned out to be the more enterprising of the two by converting the only game point he earned after his rival had frittered away four. There was nothing spectacularly distinct in any of the players' game and both seemed wary of approaching the net. The second game followed a similar pattern but it was Vittinghus, who came out trumps this time by converting one of the two game points he earned. But the Dane lost steam in the decisive third game as the Indian reeled off 11 consecutive points to seal the issue and record a memorable triumph.

IN BRIEF Sunderland's Wes Brown vies for the ball with Manchester City's Aleksander Kolarov, during their English League Cup final match at Wembley Stadium, London.
CITY SINK SUNDERLAND IN LEAGUE CUP FINAL
L
ONDON: Two moments of magic inside two secondhalf minutes helped Manchester City avoid a second successive Wembley meltdown on Sunday as they landed the season's first silverware with a 31 victory over Sunderland in the English League Cup final. Memories of last season's FA Cup final defeat by relegationbound Wigan Athletic were resurfacing as Manuel Pellegrini's side trailed to Fabio Borini's clinical 10th-minute strike. This time, however, City's slickers showed their pedigree with Yaya Toure's spectacular curling shot and Samir Nasri's piledriver turning the final on its head. Relegation-threatened Sunderland continued to dream of a first piece of silverware since their
Delhi women, Services men enter semis
NEW DELHI: In a thrilling quarter-finals encounter Delhi women defeated Punjab 111-58 to make a place in the semifinals of the 64th National Basketball Championship being held at the Indoor Stadium, Thyagaraj Sports Complex here. Punjab women were leading 1915 at the end of first quarter but the confident Delhi team picked up their game and were leading 43-28 in half time. Delhi managed to score 30 and 38 in the 3rd and 4th quarter. Prashanti Singh scored 29 points (four 3-pointers), Raspreet Sidhu 23, Pratima Singh 16 and Madhu Kumari added 12 to power Delhi to a century. Nagma Mirza scored 23, Nirmal Kumar 13 and Kiranjit Kaur finished with 11 for Punjab.
epic 1973 FA Cup final defeat of Leeds United with an impressive response before Jesus Navas finished them off in the 90th minute. It was City's first League Cup title since 1976 and keeps alive their hopes of an unprecedented domestic treble in Pellegrini's first season - but it was never straightforward. "Maybe what happened last year at Wembley was in their minds in the first half," Chilean Pellegrini, who picked up his first major trophy as a European coach after a lengthy but fruitless spell in Spain, told reporters. "But the important thing was to calm the players and let them trust in what they can do." With City in the last eight of the FA Cup and six points off the top of the Premier league with two
games in hand, Pellegrini said capturing the League Cup could prove pivotal. "This gives us a lot of confidence to go forward," he said. "If you have a chance to win a title and don't, it affects you. We are the only club to have the chance to win all the trophies and for a big club, one trophy is never enough." Sunderland manager Gus Poyet shrugged off the defeat, saying there was little his team could have done. "I'm sad, I hate it, but I'm proud of them," the Uruguayan said. "We were more than decent for 45 minutes - then bang, bang. From the football side we couldn't do better but in the end the quality decided the game." Sunderland spent the opening minutes deep inside their own
half as City zipped the ball around on the lush Wembley turf but, after knocking out Chelsea and Manchester United to reach the showpiece, they soon showed some attacking intent. City were jittery at the back and, after Sunderland had a goal rightly flagged offside, they fell behind after an uncharacteristic mistake by skipper Vincent Kompany. He was caught in two minds as Borini closed him down and instead of booting the ball clear he was dispossessed and Borini raced into the box to thump a shot with the outside of his right boot past Costel Pantilimon. Ki Sung-yueng, part of the Swansea City side that lifted the trophy last season, let fly from 30 metres, forcing Pantilimon to tip his dipping strike over the crossbar.
Pistorius pleads not guilty to murder
P
RETORIA: Paralympian star Oscar Pistorius pleaded not guilty to the Valentine's Day murder of his girlfriend, as he faced a possible life sentence in the full glare of a trial broadcast around the world. After a state prosecutor charged that Pistorius "unlawfully and intentionally did kill" girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, the sprinter entered a plea of "not guilty, my lady". Pistorius, 27, also pleaded not guilty to three unrelated gun charges. Entering the North Gauteng High Court on the opening day of the three-week trial today, Pistorius looked nervous, dressed in a black suit and tie. Standing in the dock before a packed courtroom, Pistorius looked on as his lawyer Kenny Oldwage outlined the defence's case. In the statement Pistorius admitted killing Steenkamp, but

denied murderous intent. "We were in a loving relationship," Oldwage said on Pistorius's behalf. Inside the wood-clad court room,
the victim's mother June, clad in black, looked on, coming face-toface with Pistorius for the first time. "I want to look at Oscar, really look him in the eyes, and see for myself the truth about what he did to Reeva," she told a British newspaper ahead of the trial. Further down on the woodpanelled bench sat Pistorius's brother Carl, sister Aimee and a handful other relatives. The families did not interact. The prosecution argues that the double amputee knowingly killed Steenkamp, while the defence will say he believed she was shooting an intruder. Judge Thokozile Masipa is presiding in the case that has already been likened to the OJ Simpson murder trial in the US. The state will seek to prove that Pistorius killed Steenkamp in a rage after the couple quarrelled in the early hours of February 14, 2013.
Govt gives NSF status to Hockey India
NEW DELHI: Hockey India's (HI) bid to be the sole body of governance for the national sport in the country, has got a shot in the arm after the Government of India recently accorded it the status of a National Sports Federation (NSF). HI, which was derecognised by the Union Sports Ministry in 2012 for not adhering to government guidelines, internal disputes and mismanagement, have finally been recognised as the sole body for the promotion of hockey in the country by the government. In a letter addressed to HI secretary general Narinder Batra, dated February 28, Under Secretary to the Government of India, A K Patro said that HI will be the sole body responsible for running the game of hockey in the country.
'Sick' Sehwag pulls out against HP
NEW DELHI: Out of favour Indian opener Virender Sehwag pulled out of Delhi's Vijay Hazare Trophy (North Zone leg) match against Himachal Pradesh here amid speculation that the decision was prompted by poor form. While the official reason given was "sickness", it is widely believed in Delhi's cricket fraternity that Sehwag has finally taken a break due to poor form. "Sehwag has cough and cold problems and that's why he has decided to opt out of this game. He also reported of feverish feeling," Chetan Chauhan, chairman of the selection committee told PTI. However, Sehwag conveyed his decision to the team's chief coach Sanjeev Sharma at 7:15 am in the morning while the players were instructed to report to the ground at 7:30 am. "Viru texted me in the morning and told me that he is sick," Sharma said when asked about Sehwag's absence. However Sharma's next statement was even more interesting. "Had he played this match, he would have opened the innings," Sharma said.
Rashid tops Asia Tour Order of Merit
SINGAPORE: Rising Indian golfer Rashid Khan rode on his title triumph in the season-opening SAIL-SBI Open to clinch the top spot in the latest Asian Tour Order of Merit. Rashid's earnings stand at USD 54,000, way ahead of second-placed Siddikur Rahman of Bangladesh (USD 33,000). Faced with yet another play-off at the same event again, the talented Indian came good to lift the trophy this year. "I don't like play-offs. I played some seven play-offs in the last 14 months and I won only three. I lost my last play-off at the Bilt. It's a lottery," said Khan, who pipped Rahman to his maiden Asian Tour win with a birdie on the first extra hole. The golfing Gods finally smiled on Khan as he erased the heartbreak of a play-off defeat at the same event a year ago, bringing back the cheers for the 23-year-old.
