Multi-crore loan finance scam unearthed Continued from pg 1 «

OPINIONS

Do you think the state government’s decision to hike legislators’ pension from Rs.15,000 per month to Rs.40,000 Vijay Kaminwar Social worker After becoming a legislator, people become so affluent that they don’t need to have a pension. Besides, they get lot of perks too.

Chitra Lele Assist. Prof, Political Science The amount is reasonable as per price hikes. But a pension should be given to those who retire from active politics and work for Siddharth Kumar Financial expert Normally, pensions are for people who spend their lives in service of the nation. that they would get them loans through different national and international agencies. Subsequently the case was handed over to the EOW when it was realized that the scam had nation wide ramifications. Five others, including two foreigners, are still at large. The absconding accused are: Sanjay Bhardwaj (also known as Sanjay Sharma), Raj Kothari, Mittal, David Welham and Christopher. David and Christopher are said to be foreigners, whereas Mittal is an NRI. .DCP Pravinkumar Patil (Zone XII) told ADC that they have confiscated some documents and data from the accused. Since cases against them have also been registered with different police stations, the matter has been handed over to the EOW, he said. On Saturday some of the victims of the scam gathered outside Kasturba Marg police station and demanded that the main kingpin, Sanjay Sharma be nabbed immediately and the property of M/s Delta Finlease Private Limited, located at Metro Mall, Borivali East, be seized. As of now the office of Delta remains locked but it has not been sealed by the police. According to the data collected, the list of those who have been duped is long and includes: Musa Lakdawala, Byculla, Mumbai (Rs 50 lakh), Mohammed Shams, Dahisar, Mumbai (Rs 32 lakh), B.K.Avhad, Chairman, HR & UB Infra Projects Private Limited, Lower Parel, Mumbai (Rs 28 lakh), Subhash Palshetkar, Chairman, Sai Abhishek Group of Companies, Mira Road (Rs 36 lakh) and D.D.Pawar, Director, Pawar Builders, Pune (Rs 29 lakh). The matter came to the fore when one of the victims, Musa Lakadawala, filed an FIR (203/2013) with Kasturba Marg Police on July18, once he realized that there were no signs of him getting a loan of Rs 20 crore which he had sought from Delta Finlease. For this he had paid Rs 49 lakh by way of

Closed office of Delta Finlease at Goregon cash (Rs 7 lakh) and the rest by cheques and bank guarantees last May. He had also pledged the original documents of 7 flats (worth Rs 35 crore) belonging to him and his brothers as collateral security. No sooner had he lodged the FIR,

loan applied for. Musa then filed another complaint with the Byculla Police station. Meanwhile, a team of the Kasturba Marg police led by DCP Patil, comprising Sr PIs Bharat Varleker, PIs Laxman Chavan, Sudhir

Pvt. Ltd at Metro Mall Borivali (East). Earlier they were functioning from Goregaon (East). Before that they were operating in the name of Fiscal Development from Dahisar (East). They had also claimed to have sister concerns, Credit Finance Corporation Co. Ltd, and Global Fiscal Corporation Co. Ltd in Bangkok (Thailand). Besides, they had also claimed that they had agents in UAE and UK and other states in India, the complainant Musa Lakadawla said, adding that the accused have been operating in Mumbai, Pune, Gujarat , Delhi, UP, MP and Haryana. Their offices were well-furnished and maintained to impress loan seekers. The staff of the Delta Finlease & Credit Finance always carried bags with airport tags to further impress visitors. The accused are allegedly experts in fabricating documents, making false ID cards etc. The usual contact strategy was through newspaper advertisements and social networking sites. Those who responded were usually builders, small film makers and traders. They used to collect 2 to 3 percent of the loan amount applied for as legal charges and also collected additional charges for translating documents into Thai! These, they claimed, would be submitted in Bangkok. They also used to obtain signatures on blank agreements, Lakadawala alleged. They used to implicate their clients in false cases if they pressed for the refund of the amounts they had paid in advance. The offence has been registered against all the accused under various sections of IPC; cheating, forgery, unlawful business practice, breach of trust, money laundering (hawala), harassment, and using abusive and vulgar language. As the news of their arrest spread throughout India, many affected people have began filing FIRs in different police stations. One of the victims, D.D.Pawar, has lodged a FIR with Mundhwa police in Pune.

The heights and the depths

The road that Dashrath Manjhi cut through a hill single-handedly in Gaya district of Bihar over a period of 22 years and (inset) the man himself.

VERY few of the reading public have not read about Dashrath Manjhi, Gaya district’s Mountain Man, not because he was as big as a mountain but because he moved one in memory of his wife. Thousands of articles were written about his inspirational life but of course, the last to respond were the people who should have been doing the work he did. This was actually cutting a road through a hill to reduce the distance between Gahlour village, where he lived in Gaya district, to the nearest town. He did it all on his own, the highest form of shramdaan, and it took him 22 years. By the time he finished, he had a cutting that was 360 feet long and 30 feet wide. Apparently it is still not metalled. He did all this in the memory of his wife Falguni who died because he could not reach a doctor in time. And his work has reduced the

distance between Atri and Wazirganj blocks in Gaya from 75 km to 1 km. He finally died in Delhi in 2007, but not before he was felicitated by the chief minister. We think he would have preferred to dsee the road properly tarred and surfaced in his life time. But this is not the whole story, fascinating though it is. Film maker Ketan Mehta has now made a movie on Dashrath. Aotly it is titled Manjhi – the Mountain Man, with Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte in the leading roles. It was ready last year in October, when up popped a man who claimed that Dashrath Manjhi had actually given him the rights to his whole life as he lay on his death bed – in Patna. So Ketan Mehta could not screen the film he had made. Now the Patna civil court has dismissed the petition, asking for the stay and passed a verdict in

favour of the release. So we can expect to see the movie very soon. What the lwayers proved was that on the day mentioned by the claimant to Manjhi’s life story, Dashrath was not even there in Patna. For his film, Mehta did the shooting in actual locations in Bihar. TRelieved he is about the case, but also very indignant about the fact that someone thought he could claim to have the rights to tell the man’s ;life story. It has been widely quoted, and if Dashrath is a “discovery’ of anyone, it is of former minister in the Rajiv Gandhi cabinet Arun Singh. We remember a news magazine breaking the story as part of its Heroes project in the 1990s. Dashrath finished the road in 1988, having started the work in 1967, that is how long it took to reach the public. But having read about it, we never forgot it. What is mind-boggling is how invariably the most majestic acts of humanity usually have a companion piece detailing the lowest forms of human life, like the man who tried to make a fast buck out of a great subject. That, we are afraid, is the paradox that is India.

Hiroshima day

IT should be a festive day today at Azad Maidan, as 1,000 NSS volunteers gather with placards and banners to send home the message that there should be no more Hiroshimas ever. Nor is there a soul who would fail to concur with the sentiment that seeks to work for peace and a nuclear-free world. It is just that we think everyone should be a part of it, so please head for Azad Maidan at around 3.30 pm and help swell the numbers.

For last few days, a housing society on Nausher Bharucha Road (old Sleater Road) in the heart of the island city, has been receiving a bunch of unexpected visitors. Wild squirrels frolicking around in the rains, creating a racket with their constant chirruping. Not that anybody is complaining. Residents are amused that in this most crowded area just outside Grant Road station, this rare wild life is there for everybody to enjoy. Here is one member of the bunch perched on top of a few stacked bamboos. Incidentally, Sleater Road is one of the unique stretches of roads in the island city boasting of huge, shady trees, some of which are more than half a century old.

threats of Nitesh Rane of Swabhimaan Sanghatana in response to her light-hearted tweet about the idea of Mumbai seceding from Maharashtra. Wonder if anyone remembers that Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray once mooted the idea of permits to Mumbai for outsiders, and late last year, the Governor of Delhi suggested the same thing for Delhi, a suggestion which was shot down by chief minister Sheila Dixit. But no-one suggested that the governor come out on the street and say the same thing if he dared, or that he would lose whatever “shoba” he had “forever”. That’s the trouble with social media. It lets in any and everybody. We think young Mr Rane should focus a bit on the fact that he now has to deal with the CBI Court’s rejection of the closure report filed by the CBI in the matter of the complaint of one Chintu Shaikh who has alleged that he was fired upon by the politician in Worli in 2010. As for the harpies who congregated beneath her building to “protest” her tweet, we would suggest that at least they spell the lady’s name write. An evident believer in the power of numerology, probably it was seeing her name on banners spelt ‘Shoba Dey’ that upset her more than the racket. All the more reason to be glad she came out of her corner swinging to such good effect.

he family of Preeti Rathi (24) who was attacked with acid by an unknown assailant on May 2, 2013 at Bandra Terminus and succumbed to her injuries on June 1, 2013, filed a writ petition in the Bombay High Court yesterday (August 5, 2013) as they feel that it is only the court that can get the CBI investigations started in their deceased daughter’s case. “We have been waiting for the CBI probe to begin since a long time but nothing has happened. We are tired of waiting and so we decided to take legal help. We consulted a lawyer and he advised us to file a writ petition in the Bombay High Court. We had to do this. It is only the court

Acid attack victim Preeti Rathi that can help us now,” said Preeti’s father Amar Singh Rathi. Amar Singh Rathi who was in Mumbai on August 5, 2013, is yet to receive the compensation amount of

two lakhs that he is entitled to. “We are yet to receive the compensation too. But that can be taken care off later. We will get it soon. What is of importance for us is the CBI probe. That needs to begin at the earliest,” said Rathi. Rathi’s lawyer, advocate Gautam Pyarelal, said, “The Rathis got in touch with me five days ago. We have filed a writ petition under article 226 (under this article the family can file a writ petition in the Bombay High Court despite the being residents of Delhi). The family wasn’t happy with the progress of the investigations of their daughter’s case and had demanded a CBI probe. So to get that probe started, we have filed a writ petition.” shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

The gift of life By A Staff Reporter

“I

t is a new life for me and the best gift my husband has given me,” said 34-year-old Sandhya Prasad, who recently underwent a kidney transplant at Fortis hospital in Mulund. After having undergone dialysis for eight months and suffering the pain that accompanies it, Sandhya today is leading a pain free and normal life thanks to her husband Dr. Roymon T. Christuraj who donated his kidney to her. “In February last year, there was a swelling on my eyelid. As the ophthalmologist ruled out an eye problem, I was tested for levels of electrolytes and creatinine level based on the advice of my family doctor. While my electrolytes were normal, my creatinine levels were high. When even after a month of medication I did not show any improvement, I consulted Dr. Haresh Dodeja at Fortis Hospital in Mulund. After a bout of pneumonia and tuberculosis in September, I was put on dialysis,” said Sandhya. After undergoing dialysis for eight months which affecting Sandhya’s quality of life, when the doctor suggested a kidney transplant, the couple decided to go for it, and Sandhya’s husband was the first to come forward for the donation. On May 10 this year Sandhya underwent a successful kidney transplant and today is more energetic than ever before. “Life is a gift and what is better

Sandhya Prasad with her husband than sharing this gift? Organ donation, more so, cadaver organ donation is the best thing to do. It is the greatest joy to be able to share your life with someone,” said Dr. Christuraj. According to Dr. Haresh Dodeja, consulting nephrologist and transplant physician at Fortis Hospital, Mulund, there need to be more wide scale awareness campaigns about organ donations. “Due to a lack of awareness, when our social workers approach a grieving family to talk about organ donation, it is considered as selling an idea at an inappropriate time. This makes our job difficult as the family isn’t able to take a decision. People need to be educated about cadaver organ donation since organ donation is the need of the hour as it can save so many lives,” said Dr. Dodeja.

inancial irregularities within the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) are quite obviously a matter of concern. However, chief auditor Vitthal Sude admits that various departments of the civic body have failed to reply to the objections raised in the audit despite sending reminders. “Regular reminders have been sent to the various departments whose audit reports were returned by the standing committee and a reply was been sought. Six letters have been sent to the heads of these various departments, but till date, none have reverted to the queries.” The compliance and objections to be raised have been sent to the municipal commissioner. M. K. Madhvi, corporator, Nationalist Congress Party, says, “For the past one year we have been returning reports to various departments for a clarification. Sampat Shewale, who was the former chairman of the Standing Committee, had directed all the departments to reply to the objections after which the report would come before the committee within three months. The chief auditors of the civic body, however, state that there is no cooperation in matters relating to the compliance of reports, which should be dealt with strictly.”

A state legislator will now get an amount of Rs.40,000 per month as pension after his term expires, according to the bill, up from Rs.25,000 per month. The bill also states that this amount will be paid to the families of deceased members of the state legislature. The only opposition was from the Finance Department and this was ignored even by the state Cabinet! Since it was an all party affair in the House, the bill got a nod within minutes. A total of 822 former members of the State Assembly and the State Council and 750 dependant family members of deceased legislators will be benefited by this new decision. This will put a burden of Rs.30 crore annually on the state. Maharashtra will be the first state to sanction this hefty amount as pension to its formers legislators, a sum that is almost double the pension of a Member of Parliament (MP), who gets Rs.20,000 per month. The bill has created a flutter in the corridors of the Mantralaya. At present, the state is reeling under a debt of Rs.4,000 crore. Earlier, only former legislators were entitled to pension. The neighboring state of Gujarat does not have any such scheme of pension for its former legislators. Other states which give pension to former MLAs and family pension to their kin are: Haryana (Rs.13,750+DA), Madhya Pradesh (Rs.7,000+300), Chhatisgarh (Rs.16,000) along with Rs.1, 000 as family pension, Tamil Nadu (Rs.12,000) of which 50 per cent is paid as family pension, Himachal Pradesh (Rs.18,000) of which 50 per cent is paid as family pension, Rajasthan (Rs.7,500) along with Rs.2,500 as family pension and Karnataka (Rs.26,000) of which 50 per cent is paid as family pension. In Maharashtra, by contrast, the remuneration is princely! suyash.padate@afternoondc.in

31 year-old house maid has been arrested by the Kandivli Police station for allegedly stealing jewelry and cash worth over Rs seven lakhs from her employer’s house to repay the debt of her own home loan. The arrested woman has been identified as Renuka Rane. She stayed along with her family in Nalasopara, from where she was nabbed

soon after the case was registered by her employer. According to the police, the complainant Malati Shah (46) stayed alone in Seeta Sadan building, Sai Baba Nagar, Kandivli (west). She has a daughter who studies in Singapore. Rane began to work for her from June 26, on recommendation from a previous maid. The accused made a duplicate key of the cupboard and stole valuables while Shah was away from the house. On Renuka Rane being escorted by a lady constable at the Kandivli Police Station.

Man gets advance bail in sexual abuse case

T

he Bombay High Court has granted anticipatory bail to a man, who has been accused by his wife of sexually abusing their two children. Granting anticipatory bail in the sum of Rs 15,000, Justice Sadhana Jadhav, last week, directed that accused shall not make any contact with the children, or tamper with the evidence otherwise, and shall report at the police station every Sunday till the charge sheet is filed. The accused is facing a case against Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and Indian Penal Code. The judge held that there was nothing on record to show that the accused had any contact with his children after November 14, 2012, when the Protection of Chil-

dren Act came into force, as he had left the family since mid-December, 2012 and in between, he had hardly stayed at home. The wife's complaint is based on statements of the children who alleged that they were sexually abused. However, the husband's lawyer argued that children had been made scapegoats to satisfy the wife's personal vendetta. The wife's lawyer alleged that the accused had taken photographs of the children to use them for pornographic purpose, but the court observed that there was nothing on record to suggest commission of offence. The couple married in 2002 and had two children. The son is at present 9 years old, and the daughter 6 years old.

spector of Kandivli police station, said, “The accused Renuka Rane stole Rs 6,50,000 cash and jewelry worth Rs. 50,000 from the Shah’s flat. Rane confessed her crime during interrogation and said she wanted to repay her home loan through this theft.” As of now, Rane is in police custody and all the stolen goods have been recovered. However, her husband’s role in the crime is also being investigated.

Narayan Rane defends son over tweet on Gujarati community; BJP plans agitation By Prashant Hamine

pparently ticked off by the party leadership over his son Nitesh’s controversial tweet, allegedly aimed at the Gujarati community in Mumbai, father and Minister for Industries Narayan Rane, sought to defend his son and accused the media of blowing the issue out of context. Speaking to newspersons here yesterday, Rane senior clarified that his son’s tweet was not aimed at the Gujarati or Jain community, but added that the remarks were aimed at all those who praised Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, where he asked them to pack their bags and head for the neighbouring state. The BJP has been quick to lash out at the Rane, with the leader of opposition in legislative council, Vinod Tawde, remarking, “If Rane says those who support Modi should go to Gujarat, then should we say those supporting Soniaji should go to Italy? Political leaders should speak in a matured way.” The latter has further tweeted on Au-

Commenting upon Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray and MNS president Raj Thackeray heaping praise on Modi, Rane again sarcastically remarked that if the two were so much in awe of Gujarat then why were they going on vacation abroad rather than going to Gujarat.

Also few years back BJP MLA Lodha asked the High Court to declare south Mumbai a VEGETERIAN zone! Communal n Food discrimination? Although both the cases were dismissed by the Honourable High Court!!” Ever since the controversy has blown over Nitesh Rane too has clarified that his tweet was not aimed at the Gujarati community but against those who praised Modi. The minister argued that in terms of industrial development and investment, Maharashtra was way ahead of Gujarat. Commenting upon the tweet further, Rane stated that such praise of Gujarat hurts the Maharashtra pride. Replying to queries over NCP’s Minister for Home R R Patil assuring probe into the tweet of his son, Rane, in a sarcastic tone remarked that since the issues of terrorism and others were over now, the minister can probe whatever he wants to.

NO (RE)VALUE

MU make its students wait more than 6 months for the declaration of corrected results.

By Yatin Ingle

W

hile Mumbai University (MU) has trying its best to declare the final year results in time; it has ended up creating a record of delaying the revaluation of students by more than six months. Though MU was late in declaring the revaluated marks by two months, this time it has taken almost half a year, making students lose out on employment as well as admission to post graduate courses. As the final admission dates of regular post graduation courses have already passed, students will now have to wait for another year to join a course. According to the Maharashtra Universities Act 1994, a varsity should declare results within 45 days from the day of commencement of examinations; whereas according to the rules of MU, the revaluation results should be declared within 45 days of the submission of results to the examination department.

Congress versus Sena Straight contest for the Aurangabad-Jalna Legislative Council seat on Aug 19 By Prashant Hamine

T

he elections to the Aurangabad-Jalna Local Authorities constituency seat in the Legislative Council to be held on August 19 will be a straight contest between the Congress and the Shiv Sena. After the expiry of the deadline for withdrawal of candidature the only two candidates remaining in the

fray are sitting Sena MLC Kishanchand Tanwani and Subhash Zambad of the Congress. The election has been necessitated because of the term of membership of sitting Shiv Sena MLC Kishanchand Tanwani ends on August 29 next month. In the 2007 polls, Zambad then had contested as an NCP backed Independent candidate then polling just 137

votes. Despite the cross-voting and the BJP declaring its support to Zambad, Tanwani then defeated official Congress nominee Abdul Sattar Abdul Naqvi by a margin of 32 votes. Tanwani then had sprung a surprise on the BJPNCP combine by polling 238 votes in a triangular contest. As per the election programme announced by EC the polling will be held on Au-

gust 19 and counting of votes will be held on August 21. The current electoral college comprises of 471 corporators drawn from two municipal corporations, two Zilla parishads, five municipal councils and five panchayat samitis. As per the latest partywise strength in the civic bodies in these two districts the contest this time promises to be a keenly fought one.

Judgement on Aug 11 in case of IPS officer who got marks for a law exam he never attended By Philip Varghese

M

ore than a year after a petition was filed in the Bombay High Court which alleged that IPS officer K.L. Bishnoi did not appear in person for his practical examination in the LLB course four years ago, and yet managed to get marks for the same, the Bombay High Court on Monday reserved its order in the matter on a plea by a former vice principal of Siddharth Law College demanding CBI probe. The petitioner, Chitra Salunkhe, who was the examiner for the practical examination, had filed the petition seeking action against Bishnoi as well as

officials of Siddharth Law College and the Mumbai University. She alleged that on March 12, 2005, she was examiner for the practicals. There was a typed list of 15 students, and Bishnoi’s name was added to it later which was handwritten. Since Bishnoi did not turn up for the examination which was to start at 8.30 am, she marked him absent. But later she was shocked to find out that he had been allotted marks for it. When she asked the college principal about this, she was told that Bishnoi, then working with Economic Offences Wing, had taken the examination before the scheduled time, as he wanted to go to the police station later. But Salunkhe alleged that there was no attendance signature against his roll number on the list. Petition also alleged that Bishnoi had not taken Home Department's permission for taking the exam. Despite the

complaint, the college and the university did not investigate the matter, she alleged. Salunkhe alleged that the report filed by the then Maharashtra DGP K. Subramaniam, who had conducted an inquiry against seven senior police officers, including ATS chief Rakesh Maria, for allegedly shielding Bishnoi, was an eyewash and demanded investigation by CBI, saying that inquiry by an independent agency would serve the ends of justice. “We don’t think that the probe by the police will be fair as it against their own colleague. If not CBI, then the probe should be handed over to the state CID,” Salunkhe’s advocate Manjula Rao argued. Based on this, division bench of justices S. C. Dharmadhikari and S. B. Shukre told the court that even the CBI draws its local staff of officials from police. After hearing both sides, the bench reserved the order until August 7. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

A student, who did not wish to be named says, “I had an ATKT (Allowed to Keep Terms), in the fifth semester in my Bachelors of Law which I had sent in for revaluation in the varsity. I have completed my final semester whose results have already been declared, but I am still waiting for the revaluation results of the fifth semester. Since my revaluation results are not out, as per the rules, my overall result has been kept on hold. I have already lost out on job opportunities and if at all my marks remain the same, the only option I have is to appear next year.” Last year even after taking two extra months to declaration the revaluation results, the university made several errors in the marking system due to which students had to apply for a revaluation yet again. When the ADC spoke to Dr. Padma Deshmukh, Controller of Examinations, she said, “It’s true that it is taking long for the revaluation results to be declared, but they will be out soon. Students should not worry as the varsity its trying its best to declare the results as soon as possible.”

No justice to Durga? he Centre has written three letters to T the Uttar Pradesh government asking for information with regard to various happenings that led to the suspension of IAS officer Durga Shakthi Nagpal. Following Sonia Gandhi’s letter to the chief minister asking him to take steps that would get justice for Durga, the Centre must have called for proper procedure in dealing with the case. What Durga got was a suspension order without any inquiry. The Centre’s intervention appears to have only toughened the stand of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. Durga has been chargesheeted: The chargesheet said that Durga’s action has been without vision and indicated poor administrative ability, and there was no complaint from villagers about the construction of a wall around the masjid on government land. It further said without any complaint about the wall but Durga abolished it and she did not follow any existing procedure. Finally the chargesheet accused her of causing communal concern in the village. It looks like the Centre is not likely to take any effective stand to get justice for the IAS officers. It is expecting support to the food bill from the Samajwadi Party. It cannot get the bill passed if Mulayam Singh Yadav decides not to cooperate with it. According to reports, the party has already sent a message to the Centre in this regard. The government is convinced that Durga has only done her duty and the charges made against her are only a pack of lies, but the fact that it cannot get the Food Bill passed in Parliament without the support of the Samajwadi Party may prevent it from taking any effective action and do justice to Durga.

t was heartening to watch debates on poverty on national television channels, particularly the English ones. Elitist in approach, they seldom deliberate privations of the common man. Likewise, the English press is reluctant to carry news or write-ups on poverty because it has come to believe that its well-to-do readers do not want to know about the extent of poverty at the breakfast table. The Hindi and other language papers are more sensitive. This is probably the difference between India and Bharat. Yet the nation cannot run away from the fact that roughly 65 per cent of Indians are poor, 35 per cent of them destitute. After projecting the Planning Commission’s criteria for expenditure is Rs.24 in villages and Rs.33 in urban areas, the government has realised that the amount is too paltry to convince even the most gullible. Now the average has been placed around Rs 50. This sum is also too meager. Yet some leading Congressmen have tried to trivialise poverty by proclaiming that one can have a full, hearty meal for Rs.5 at Delhi and Rs.12 at Mumbai. According to the Planning Commission, seldom right, poverty has been reduced to 22 per cent. The Commission, a creature of the ruling Congress, gives credit for this to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government.

in order but he has been a failure. The growth rate in the last two years is less than the proverbial Hindu growth rate of 3.5 to 4 per cent, although the overall average in the last decade is 5.5 per cent, reportedly next to China, the leader in the world. Manmohan Singh has turned out to be more of a politician than an economist. This is proved by the fact that he has managed to be the Prime Minister for nearly a decade. India’s poor performance is not due to the global factors, ascribed by pro-establishment economists, but because of poor governance. The fact is that we are spending more than we are earning. The government has doubled it in the last 10 years. Inflation has been galloping upward. Printing of currency notes, if at all a short-term relief, is not a solution. The paucity of funds is sought to be met with panicky measures. Take the concessions offered to foreign investors, 49 per cent in insurance and oil and gas. The measures have been compared to opening the floodgates. Instead of self-suffi-

Unable to stem the rot

The welfare schemes, started with good intention, are starving for funds. The Congressrun government has an eye on the next elections. For unpredictable gains, the Congress has put the entire economic system at stake. The opposition parties may be shrill in their criticism, but they are right in stating that Manmohan Singh’s rule has been fraught with mismanagement, corruption and a few belated steps to stem the rot. The economic situation has been going from bad to worse. India is a non-sympathetic society. Over the years, it has deteriorated in values. There is not a semblance of idealism, much less movement, to lift the lower half to lead a viable living. Poverty, unemployment and malnutrition, all signs of a decaying society, are visible on an increasing scale. The bureaucracy has been reduced to an authority merely affixing seal, from of being the steel frame that it was till the beginning of seventies. They bombed Hiroshima today… O

n August 6, 1945, the United States used a massive, atomic weapon against Hiroshima, Japan. This atomic bomb, the equivalent of 20,000 tons of TNT, flattened the city, killing tens of thousands of civilians. While Japan was still trying to comprehend this devastation three days later, the United States struck again, this time, on Nagasaki. At 8:15 a.m. (local time), the door of the Enola Gay (a B-29 Superfortress bomber aircraft) sprang open and dropped‘Little Boy.’The bomb exploded 1,900 feet above the city. Captain Robert Lewis, the co-pilot, stated, "Where we had seen a clear city two minutes before, we could no longer see the city. We could see smoke and fires creeping up the sides of the mountains." Two-thirds of Hiroshima was destroyed. Within three miles of the explosion, 60,000 of the 90,000 buildings were demolished. Clay roof tiles had melted together. Shadows had imprinted on buildings and other hard surfaces. Metal and stone had melted. Staff Sergeant George Caron, the tail gunner, described what he saw: "The mushroom cloud itself was a spectacular sight, a bub-

bling mass of purple-gray smoke and you could see it had a red core in it and everything was burning inside. . . . It looked like lava or molasses covering a whole city. . . ." The cloud is estimated to have reached a height of 40,000 feet. Unlike many other bombing raids, the goal for this raid had not been a military installation but rather an entire city. The atomic bomb that exploded over Hiroshima killed civilian women and children in addi-

Hiroshima's population had been estimated at 350,000; approximately 70,000 died immediately from the explosion and another 70,000 died from radiation within five years. This is what Albert Einstein had to say: "Today, the physicists who participate in watching the most formidable and dangerous weapon of all time... cannot desist from warning and warning again: we cannot and should not slacken in our efforts to make the

nations of the world and especially their governments aware of the unspeakable disaster they are certain to provoke unless they change their attitude towards each other and towards the task of shaping the future. We helped in creating this new weapon in order to prevent the enemies of mankind from achieving it ahead of us. Which, given the mentality of the Nazis, would have meant inconceivable destruction, and the enslavement of the rest of the world... "Large parts of the world are faced with starvation, while others are living in abundance. The nations were promised liberation and justice, but we have witnessed and are witnessing, even now, the sad spectacle of liberating armies firing into populations who want their independence and social equality, and supporting in those countries by force of arms, such parties and personalities as appear to be most suited to serve vested interests. Territorial questions and arguments of power, obsolete though they are, still prevail over the essential demands of common welfare and justice."

Why has Parvez Rasool been left out? VIRAT Kohli showed a hint of growing up when he dropped himself down the order to allow Jadeja and Dinesh Karthik a hit in the fifth and final ODI and became the second youngest captain, after Zimbabwe’s Prosper Utseya against Kenya in 2009, to win a bilateral series by a 5-0 margin. This was India’s first ODI clean sweep outside the sub-continent and while Kohli can be proud of this show, in reality beating the babes is not an issue even for our side. Selectors, however, made a blunder by not blending youth with experience to build a side for the 2015 World Cup. Subramaniam Badrinath, who faced the likes of Dayle Steyn successfully, was not considered even this time. In the past however, when Sachin was not around, Badrinath was an automatic choice to replace him has now been dropped like a hot potato. — C.K. Subramaniam, Sanpada

Women’s empowerment? THIS refers to your editorial ‘A cover up operation by Akhilesh fails’ (Aug 5). It is really unfortunate that the UP government has issued a charge sheet against Durga Shakti, thus ignoring all demands for fair treatment. The futility of being an IAS officer is clearly evident because

BAD DEED: He punished the brave officer who dared to attack the sand mafia. their position depends on the whims of their political bosses, and if they do not toe the line, they suffer. All talk about women empowerment by our politicians is a sham, because when it comes to their interests they treat women worse than their servants. Akhilesh Yadav has brought dishonour to his position by siding with the sand mafia, rather than standing tall with the upright officer. The Central government must intervene to correct the situation. The UP government has set a dangerous precedent and needs to be put in its place by the vigilant media and public so that this does not happen to any other honest officer in the future. — Ashok Goswami, Mumbai

bounds and is now the first Indian since 1996 to head the ICC bowling ODI rankings. However, one was surprised that Jammu & Kashmir player Parvez Rasool was not given a single game, when it was a great opportunity to groom youngsters from smaller states based on the strength of the opposition. Why then was he selected if there was no intention to put him on the team? India has ample talent when it comes to cricket across the country and youngsters need to be given opportunities against weak cricketing nations for international exposure. Our cricket board should be run by former cricketing greats like Kapil Dev, Gavaskar and Bedi who know what is good for our side and to build teams in the future.

And to add to it, she has been charge-sheeted and asked to reply within a fortnight. Such unsavoury incidents happen only because people who go through tough all-India competitive examinations like the IAS and successfully and take up government jobs have to be at the mercy of politicians, most of whom are just tenth class pass or at best a singledegree holders. A proper set-up would have been to make our officers answerable only to their immediate bosses and not to ministers. No action should have been taken against Durga without the concurrence of the District Magistrate. It will be in the fitness of things if the CM revokes her suspension order and creates a climate conducive for her to discharge her duties the way she has been doing. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane

THE Congress is looking to the JD(U) for its support to get the Food Bill passed in the monsoon session of the Parliament. This is being viewed as a precautionary measure in the light of the defiance shown by the SP in the Durga Shakti case. Sense of humour missing DR. SUBRAMANYAN seems to be unduly upset about ‘Caricaturing Southies’ (August 3). Let me assure him that no one takes such ridiculously exaggerated representations of different communities or individuals seriously. This is a form of humour meant to be taken in a lighter vein, and not LETTER OF critically analysed. In THE DAY fact, every community has been caricaturised, as Deepa Gahlot has rightly pointed out in “Aiyyo

Raama” (ADC, Aug. 2). The Parsis have been depicted in a highly comic manner and I, being a Parsi, have always enjoyed these. Caricatures are always meant to amuse. TV programs like Cyrus Broacha’s ‘The Week that wasn’t’ are highly enjoyable, replete with caricatures. Yet, it is sad to see that such popular, light-hearted comedies have to start with a disclaimer. Where’s our sense of humour? — Dr. Neville S. Bengali, Cooperage

For reasons best known to the management, they tried out everyone except Rasool, which is dirty politics and has disappointed millions of cricket fans. I am of the opinion that team should have rested Jadeja and Raina for Rasool and Rahane because there is no point leading 4-0 and not giving every member of the touring team a chance to play at least once by reshuffling the deck. It is high time the team management stops playing dirty politics with upcoming players, something I hold Captain Kohli and Coach Fletcher fully responsible for. It is hoped that selectors will select him again for India, rather than throw him out without any reason which has been done in the past.

Mumbai’s enriching potholes By A Staff Reporter

T

he Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has spent an estimated Rs.12,000 crore of public money on the repair, strengthening and construction of the roads in the city in the last ten years. However, the city continues to be taken for a very bumpy ride. After spending crore of rupees on the road, nothing has changed except the income of road contractors and certain engineers in the road department. Even the Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan confirmed in the state assembly that civic engineers and contractors have colluded in and are responsible for the fate of city. Every monsoon, there are

reports of fatal road accidents, miscarriages and back injuries due to travelling even short distances on Mumbai’s roads. Nowr has spending huge amounts of money had any tangible effect on the quality of the roads. Every year, the civic body has been making a budget

provision of Rs.1,000 crore plus in the annual fiscal, saying that since Mumbai is the commercial capital of the country with VVIPs like Presidents and PMs of various countries coming here, the roads need to be kept in good repair. However, say corporators,

the only development seen is in the bank accounts of road engineers and contractors. There are only five major contractors who bid for the road contractors in the BMC. They make a cartel and consensually get the contracts. The roads department is one of the two most lucrative engineering departments in the BMC with people openly saying that one must pay to be posted here! MNS councillor Sandeep Deshpande said, “Over the years, contractors, engineers in the roads department and certain councillors have been become affluent from the public money meant for the development of the roads. It is not going to change until civic engineers do their jobs honestly. They understand only MNS style lessons.”

Major blow: No bid for MTHL project I

n a major blow to attempts of Maharashtra government to improve infrastructure in the metropolis, none of the five shortlisted firms put in tender for the ambitious Mumbai TransHarbour Link (MTHL) project, the bids for which opened on Monday. "We did not receive any bid from the private sector for the MTHL project," MMRDA Additional Metropolitan Commissioner Ashwini Bhide told PTI. On July 31, one of the five shortlisted companies, IRB Infrastructure, had said it would not bid for MTHL. IRB Infra had tied up with Hyundai Engineering for the sea bridge. The other four shortlisted consortia were Cintra-SomaSrei, Gammon Infrastructure Projects-OHL ConcessionsGS Engineering, GMR Infrastructure-L&T-Samsung C&T Corpn and Tata Realty and

Infrastructure-Autostrade Indian Infrastructure Development-Vinci Concessions Development. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is the implementing agency for the Rs 9,630-crore project, which seeks to connect Sewri in the northeastern fringe of the island city with Nhava on the mainland. It is to be developed on built-operatetransfer basis. "We had provided all necessary assistance to mitigate all the risks for the private sector. Right from clearances to assuring financial assistance, we had addressed most of their problems. Yet we did not get any response," Bhide said. After repeated failures, MMRDA had extended the deadline for shortlisted consortia to submit bids to July 5 which was again put off to August 5 from original date of

May 24, 2013 after the bidders sought additional time. Bhide said the Government had also approached the Centre for making changes in the model document of the project on certain terms and conditions to address some of the issues faced by the private sector. To address some of its financial risks, Union Finance Ministry, in January this year, sanctioned viability gap funding to the tune of Rs 1,920 crore for the project. Besides, the empowered committee of the department of economic affairs had approved 10 per cent shortfall loan to the MTHL concessionaire. "The decision on shortfall loan was taken to make the project financially viable. This would ensure the bankers' debt service obligations are met with, should the projected traffic on the link

falls below its 80 per cent mark," Bhide said. Once completed, about 60,000 vehicles were expected to use the 22km sea bridge daily. Bhide said to further mitigate financial risk of the concessionaire, the State Government had proposed to take over the revenue risk. It was also ready to compensate the operator in case of toll collection falling below projection. "We expected that these initiatives would encourage more developers to bid for the project. However, we have not been able to get any bidder." "They never questioned the viability of the project. twisted lunge

Hold a medicine ball (with or without weights) in front of your body. l Step forward 1 ½ steps, with one leg forward till your front thigh is parallel to the floor. l Twist your torso to face your moving hip and place the ball at an angle, upwards and perpendicular to your spine. l Reverse, step back to the starting position and repeat with the other leg. l Repeating will cause extension and external rotation of your hip and will give your butt muscles the exercise they need. l

squats with weights

Position the barbell on the rack slightly lower than your shoulder height. l Place it on the back of your shoulder, just above your neck. l Keep your heels below the bar block and dismount bar from rack. l Descend until your thighs are parallel to the floor. l Extend your knees and hips until your legs are straight. l Return and repeat. l

Butt like Channing tatum Channing Tatum owes his fit posterior to exercises such as sit ups, jump rope, box jumps and lunges. Compared to others, this is the easiest workout to do. However, it doesn’t make it is any less intense. Celebrity trainer Vinod Channa gives us these exercises:

leGs like RAfAel nAdAl Considering Rafael Nadal is an athlete getting legs like his will need intense exercises. Dr. Ajish says, “The workout should be a combination of strength and speed.” The exercises he does — running and working out on a vibrating platform — might not be feasible for most of us, but you can include these in your workout:

ARms like hRiThik RoshAn

>> Nadal works out on a vibrating platform to get his perfectly sculpted legs

One look at Hrithik Roshan’s arms and you’ll know why he is called a Greek God. His workout involves a lot of CrossFit training with cardio as well as weight training. This is what you can do to get arms like his:

Close grip pull-ups

Stand beneath a pull-up bar and hold it with your fists next to each other (a closed grip). l Pull yourself up until your chin reaches the bar. l Slowly let your body down and repeat without letting your body touch the ground. l For added resistance and intensity, add ankle weights (only do so after you have sufficiently mastered the exercise). l

lateral shuffle

You will need an agility ladder for this; floors with clearly demarcated tiles might work too. l Stand laterally at the start of the ladder. Your lead foot is the one that is right next to the ladder, the other is your trail leg. l Move your lead foot into the first square. Bring your trail leg into the first square and move your lead leg to the next square. l Repeat till the end of the ladder, with your back straight and knees slightly bent. Move as fast as you can. l

Close grip push-ups

Get into a push-up position with your legs shoulder width apart. Your hands should be next to each other, with just a couple of inches of space in between. l Keep your spine straight and lower your body bringing your chest close to the floor. l Go back to the starting position and repeat. l

stiff leg deadlift

Stand with your legs shoulder width apart and hold a barbell in front of you with a dead grip (so that the knuckles are facing you). l Push your hips out, keep your back straight and bend slightly till the barbell is at the halfway point of your thighs — this is your starting position. l Push your hips out further so that you bend down till the barbell goes below your knees. l Come back up to the starting position and repeat. l

ARms like miChelle obAmA

Pins like shilPA sheTTy We can’t all be as tall as the leggy lass, but there’s no harm trying to ape those gorgeous pins. She loves yoga, but that doesn’t mean she skips the gym. Her workouts include a lot of squats and exercises that focus on her lower body. Here’s how you can get started:

Jump lunges

Stand with both your feet together. l Jump in the air and at the same time, step forward with one leg. l Land with your leg extended and jump l

again, moving your other leg forward. l Repeat for around 10-12 steps.

warrior pose l

Stand with your legs together and

lunge by moving your left leg forward till your thigh is parallel to the ground. l Bring both your arms up. l Hold the position for about one minute and repeat with the other leg.

Abs like fARhAn AkhTAR You might or might not have liked Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, but there is one aspect that we know you’ll agree on. Farhan Akhtar’s body in the movie is awe-inspiring. To get that body, he ran every day and did a 45-minute ab workout every alternate day. Vinod Channa gives us this workout that will get you abs like his:

lying down crunches

With arms like Michelle’s, it’s no wonder she steals the spotlight from her President husband every time she waves at a crowd. She focuses on health and fitness and her workout plan includes lunges, bench presses, rows, hip raises and even cardio and kickboxing — a lot of strength training exercises. We don’t expect you to be able to do it all, but here are a few exercises to start with:

incline arm curl

Sit back at a 40-60° incline on a bench. With arms hanging down straight, position two dumbbells with your palms facing forward in a supine position. l With elbows back to your sides, raise one dumbbell and rotate your forearm until it is vertical and the palm faces your shoulder. l Lower to original position and repeat with the other arm. l Continue to alternate between sides. l l

Lie down on the floor with your knees bent at a 45° angle. You can place your fingertips on your head for support. l Keep your back straight and bring your head towards your knees — do not use your hands to pull your head forward. l Lower your back slowly to the starting position, ensuring that your feet don’t leave the ground. l Do three sets of 15-20 reps. l l

>> A lot of strength training exercises is the secret behind Michelle Obama’s fit body

Planks

Get into a standard push-up position. Lower both your forearms till they are flat on the floor and your elbows are bent at 90°. l Ensure that your back is straight — this is your plank position. l Hold for 30 seconds and repeat. l l

Abs like Gwen sTefAni We’d like to think that Gwen Stefani’s body is the result of all that jumping around on stage. But, balancing kids, a career and maintaining a body has to be hard, especially since both trainers believe that such abs are terribly hard to achieve.

Twisting crunch

Cable arm curl

Lie down on the mat and bend your hip and knees to 90°. Keep your hands behind your head. l Twist and crunch at your torso and try to touch your elbow to your opposite knee. l

Reverse crunches

Lie supine on a bench or on the floor and keep your hands besides your body, or hold a corner of the bench. l Lift your legs to keep them perpendicular to your body. l Lift your legs towards the ceiling to lift hips off the floor. l Return till your hips are resting fully on the floor and repeat. l

Hold a low pulley cable bar with a shoulder width supine grip, standing close to the pulley. l Keep your elbows to one side and raise the bar towards your shoulder until your forearms are vertical. l Lower until your arms are fully extended but do not lock. l When your elbows are fully flexed, they should only travel forward slightly, allowing your forearms to be no more than vertical to allow for a relative release of tension in your muscles between repetitions. l Repeat for 6-8 reps and do around 2-3 sets. l

Cleansing’s dirty secret Celebrities swear by them and everyone wants to try them. But, Tejasvi Desai tells you why cleanse diets are best avoided

>> Eating right, exercising and having a positive mental attitude is what works best for your body

Dangerous Celeb Diets the Master Cleanse Celeb fans: Beyoncé, Ashton Kutcher & Pink The Master Cleanse, famously used by Beyoncé to shed weight for the movie Dreamgirls, is a liquid fast of mainly lemonade made with maple syrup and cayenne pepper. This is nothing more than a 10-day liquid starvation diet. 48-Hour Detox Diet Celeb fans: Anne Hathaway The 48-Hour Detox Diet is a packaged version of The Master Cleanse, but with this regimen you subject your body to severe deprivation for just 48 hours instead of 10 days.

C

leansing diets and detox plans have been in the spotlight thanks to celebrities who follow these strict regimens to lose weight quickly. Detox and cleansing programs promise everything from weight loss to improving your skin and detoxification. A cleanse diet basically means drinking juice — a lot of juice and nothing else. This pushes everything else out of your system. Detoxification is a normal body process of eliminating or neutralising toxins through your colon and liver. If you feel “congested” with too much food or the wrong kind of it, you may want to detoxify, but read on to find out why a cleanse diet is not the best way to do so:

MisleaDing “HigH” There’s something glamorous about following an extreme cleanse that your favourite celebrity loves. Even the word “cleanse” is part of the appeal. But, such regimens starve you of nutrients. During starvation, once the initial hunger pangs pass, you might experience feelings of well-being and euphoria. This euphoria is like a natural anesthetic that protects you from the pain of a starving body. But, your body needs real nutrients and whole foods in order to survive and thrive.

« KNOW MORE: ARTIFICIAL ESSENCES & YOUR HEALTH Are the essences in your food causing health problems? Tejasvi Desai tells you what you can do about it Artificial extracts, essences and flavours are prepared by bringing various synthetic flavouring agents into solution with alcohol, glycerol or propylene glycol to formulate an extract, essence or flavour with the likeness of the flavour of the fruit, spirit or liqueur for which it is named. These preparations cover a wide range of flavours including vanilla, lemon, lime, banana, cherry, butterscotch, brandy and rum.

size Matters

All food consists of natural chemicals. For example, an apple contains over 1,000 natural flavouring chemicals, some of which are known to cause health problems for some people in large doses. Chemically, there isn’t much difference between the list of chemicals in a real strawberry or in artificial strawberry flavour. It’s the size of the dose that matters. While few of us are affected by the food chemicals in one strawberry, when consumers (especially children) consume concentrated doses of some of the chemicals above and particularly if they consume them several times daily in different foods, they can be affected in a variety of ways. The effects can bring about a change in behaviour too.

effeCts

Artificial essences sometimes induce headaches or migraines, rashes, stomach aches, bloating, constipation, bedwetting, asthma, frequent coughs and colds, a stuffy or runny nose, ear infections, joint pain and swelling of the joints. Changes in behaviour become apparent such as sleep disturbance, night terrors, restless legs, being easily distracted or bored, being demanding or irritable (touchy or easily annoyed, losing temper, throwing tantrums), oppositional defiance, temper outbursts, defying rules and periods of either anxiety or unhappiness.

alternatives

Effects of food additives are difficult to source, largely due to the time delay before they become obvious as reactions can occur up to three days later. It is possible to avoid them by avoiding highly processed foods. Stick with the doses provided in nature; you can add fresh strawberries to plain yoghurt or choose products with low or no flavours. Organic products are the safest. If you’re sensitive to the smallest amounts of food chemicals — including those in unprocessed natural foods, you should avoid higher salicylate fruit flavours such as oranges.

potentially put your health at risk. Rapid weight loss rebounds quickly, so you’ll regain the weight as soon as you go back to eating normally.

your boDy Detoxes naturally Your kidneys and liver are constantly eliminating toxins and waste products. Your body’s natural detoxifying capacity can get overwhelmed by extreme or rare situations — for example, long-term exposure to toxins such as mercury. But, in such cases you would need a doctor’s help, not a special smoothie.

state of Ketosis Ketosis means your body has no carbohydrates to burn for energy, so it has to burn stored fat or whatever else is available. You feel bad and even smell bad. That's what makes you feel like hell during a (water-only) fast. Juice diets as opposed to water only or lemon juice only diets do prevent your body from going into this state but should still be avoided for long durations.

fasting May DaMage your organs You should always check with your doctor before trying a cleanse diet. But, doing your own healthy detox is guaranteed to work without any scary consequences: resolve to making great food choices. You’ll look and feel great and also lose weight.

Alcohol Alcohol not only harms your liver it also causes brain fog — a feeling of mental confusion that impacts your ability to think clearly. High alcohol intake impacts the balance of the brain and could cause you to forget common names or certain events. So, avoid diets that eliminate or severely restrict them and instead choose healthy options such as whole grain pastas and breads, brown rice and quinoa.

sAlty foods Salty foods affect your blood pressure and are very hard on your heart. Foods that contain high amounts of salt (sodium) can also impair your ability to think. Excessive consumption of salty foods has been shown to have the same effects as drugs, as they cause harsh withdrawal symptoms and increased cravings.

water is one of the biggest causes of kidney stones. Not drinking enough water means that your urine is more concentrated and thus there is a higher chance of kidney stones forming. Ensure that you drink around 8-10 glasses of water each day.

Processed Proteins Meat is the richest source of high-quality protein, but avoid processed protein such as hot dogs, salami and sausages. Unlike natural proteins that help your body insulate the nervous system, processed proteins do the opposite. Opt for tuna, salmon, dairy, walnuts and seeds as these are natural, high-quality sources of protein.

AlkAline Juices: Mix fluids such as

nicotine Nicotine is not really a food product but it restricts blood flow to your brain, along with glucose and oxygen. It causes premature ageing, bad breath, poses an increased risk of lung cancer and affects the production and function of neurotransmitters by tightening the capillaries — the tiny blood vessels that play a pivotal role when it comes to your brain function.

ArtificiAl sweeteners When we try to lose weight, we think that simply replacing sugar with artificial sweeteners will do the trick. It is true that artificial sweeteners contain fewer calories, but they can actually do more harm than good. If used for an extended period of time, artificial sweeteners can cause brain damage and interfere with your cognitive capacity, especially if consumed in large quantities.

ROLL

YOUR WAY FIT Forget the exercise ball and resistance band. The foam roller is quickly becoming the latest fitness tool, says Rhea Dhanbhoora

I

magine rolling your way to looser, fitter muscles. We’re not kidding! A technique called foam rolling (also known as SMR or self-myofascial release) that was only used by athletes in the past, is quickly becoming a good way to restrain overactive muscles and loosen up tight muscles. It is now used by everyone and it’s a great way to keep your muscles healthy. It’s best to consult your trainer before beginning any new exercise, but just to keep you informed, we tell you more about it:

upper back roll Lie on your back on the floor and place the roller beneath your neck, near your l

hamstring roll Sit on the roller with your arms stretched and place them on the floor behind you. Make sure the roller is under your hamstrings. l Roll backwards and forwards from the hamstrings to your knees. l Do this for 30 seconds. l If you are injured or need to loosen up your hamstring muscles, you can increase pressure by stacking one leg on top of the other. l

beginner’s misTake As a beginner, you could get injured if you don’t perform these exercises properly. While using a foam roller seems easy, a rookie mistake that’s made too often is rolling too fast. You’re supposed to roll only one muscle at a time instead of trying to get to all at the same time. Not only will you be at more risk of injury, you also won’t get the benefits of foam rolling, so you’ll end up just rolling around on a cylindrical object for no good reason.

Tips & Tricks

Quick exercises Want to start foam rolling but don’t have a clue how to? If you want to get a head start before talking to your trainer, here are a few simple exercises that you can try out:

in the air. Use your shoulders, hips and core muscles to control your movements and maintain balance. Do not use your hands to pull up your torso as you could end up hurting your back. l Roll the roller between your hips and knees. While rolling, stop the roller at the sore points of your body. Pause for a few seconds and then continue rolling.

shoulder blades. l Place your hands behind your head and roll back and forth for 30 seconds. l The roller should only roll from your shoulder blades to the middle of your back.

Thigh roll Lie face down with your thighs on top of the roller and wrists under your shoulders. l Contract your abs and lift your torso up l

Want to get it right? Here are a few tips and tricks on making the most of your foam rolling exercise: l Remember to spend extra time on any knots or stiff areas that you have. l If you’re rolling to heal an injured area, roll it two or three times a day. If however, you’re just rolling to prevent injuries, you can roll two to three times a week instead of every day. l Joints are the most injury prone areas. Make sure you don’t roll directly over any of the joints or very bony areas of your body to avoid injury. l Stretch your muscles after you finish the exercises, just so you stay limber and don’t roll for more than sixty seconds at a time over one area.

An Indian company recently introduced inversion tables, which are used to relieve back pain. Priyanka Singh finds out if it’s the right option for you

I

t wouldn’t be news if we said that backaches were the most common form of body pain, second only to headaches. Lower back pain in particular, has become a chronic problem with all age groups and the number of youngsters suffering from it has increased alarmingly. Quite obviously, the treatments for curing back problems have also been on the rise. One of the remedies that has recently made an entry into the Indian market is inversion therapy. We tell you more about how it can help you manage back pain.

What is inversion therapy? Inversion therapy means that your body is suspended upside down or at an inverted angle (60°). Medical studies have shown that even while lying down, there is residual pressure inside your spinal discs which is equal to 25% of the pressure present when you’re standing. Inversion is a passive fitness activity that uses gravity and your body weight to create natural traction, elongating your body to decompress the weight-bearing joints, in order to stretch and relax your muscles. With 60° of inversion, this pressure becomes zero or near zero and provides maximum relief to your spinal discs on an ongoing basis, if done regularly. This can be done either by hanging by your feet or with the help of inversion tables.

inversion tables in india While inversion therapy is popular worldwide, it has only recently been introduced in India by a company focused on relieving back-related problems — Backproof. The company has brought down The Contour L5, NXT-S and DFM (Decompression and Functional Movement table), which are a range of inversion tables developed for specific back ailments. According to Arvind Agarwal, founder of Backproof,

this five minute long, daily procedure ensures that your body gets long lasting relief by naturally aligning your spine and in the process, relieving pinched nerves. Arvind, who himself had a chronic back problem, shares his experience with this therapy. health risks Inversion therapy will not cure your back pain and it only helps if you do it regularly. Also, it is not safe for everyone. Inversion therapy involves hanging upside down; this slows down your heartbeat and increases your blood pressure when you remain inverted for more than a few minutes. Even the pressure within your eyeballs jumps drastically. For these reasons, you should not try inversion therapy if you have high blood pressure, heart disease or glaucoma. However, if you don’t have these problems, then inversion therapy might help you a great deal.

« KNOW MORE: KEEPING MILDEW AWAY The monsoon’s moisture brings with it a host of domestic problems, including dreaded mildew. Rhea Dhanbhoora helps you tackle it Have you recently noticed a thin layer filmed over the items in your home? Whether it’s black or white and caused by mold or fungi, mildew can threaten the cleanest, most well kept spaces. And it’s all due to a little thing called humidity, something that we Mumbaikars know more than enough about. But, you don’t have to live with it. Here are a few ways to get rid of this problem:

keeping it at bay

There are a few basic ways to prevent mildew from entering your home: keep it clean: It’s important to practice daily home hygiene. Keep everything clean; remember that mildew will strike if you leave even a little corner with dirt or grime — and it will spread from there. Whether it’s your walls, upholstery, windows or clothes — keep everything as clean as possible.

keep it dry: Whether it’s books, papers and clothes or nooks and crannies in your home, keeping things dry (especially during the monsoon) is one of the best ways to keep mildew away. get circulation: If your house has proper vents and gets good circulation, there is a higher chance that you’ll be able to scare off the mildew. dehumidify: Apart from keeping spaces and things dry, you also need to keep the air dry. If you don’t want to use an air conditioner all the time, you should invest in a dehumidifier to prevent mildew formation.

Cleaning it

Apart from preventing mildew from entering your house at all, what do you do when it has already invaded your space? Take a look: bleach it off: Mix three parts water with one

>> Prevent mildew from taking over your home during the monsoon by practicing good home hygiene

part bleach to scrub off the mildew. Avoid using readymade mildew removing solutions because they often have a lot of harmful chemicals. go extreme: If the mildew has been there for so long that it’s no longer a small issue, you’ll have to scrape it off with a sharp edged tool and reseal the area. If it’s inside your walls, you might need to avail of professional help. go natural: If you’ve got mildew on your clothes, you can moisten it with salt mixed with lemon juice. Keep it out in the sun to dry and rinse thoroughly to get it out. heat it up: Mildew is tough to get out of wood and if it’s very badly damaged, it would serve well to get rid of the piece altogether. You could try scrubbing it off with disinfectants or by removing the varnish and replacing it after it’s cleaned. Wood, leather and even upholstery needs a lot of heat to get rid of the dampness that causes mildew.

Centre in touch with UP on IAS officer’s suspension issue: PM N

EW DELHI: As the UP government charge sheeted IAS officer Durga Sakhti Nagpal, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday said the Centre is in touch with the state authorities on the issue and that laid down rules will be followed. “We are in touch with the state government to find out the full details of the issue," he told reDurga Nagpal porters outside Parliament House ahead of the start of the Monsoon Session. He also said the the laid down rules to deal with such cases will be followed. "There are rules laid down and the rules will be followed,” he said. The Centre had on Sunday asked the UP government to immediately give a report on the suspension of Nagpal, who had cracked down on sand mafia in Gautam Budh Nagar area. Minister of State for Personnel V. Narayanasamy said this is the third such letter sent to the state government so far after the 2010-batch IAS

officer was suspended on July 27. The Centre's fresh reminder came in the backdrop of Sonia Gandhi, who is Chairperson of National Advisory Council (NAC), writing a letter to the Prime Minister, saying that Nagpal should not be “unfairly treated”. “We must ensure that the officer is not unfairly treated,” Gandhi had said in her letter to Singh, who holds the charge of Personnel Ministry. The UP government yesterday served a charge sheet to the IAS officer. Nagpal, the 28-year-old SDM of Gautam Budh Nagar, who led the crackdown on sand mining mafia in her district, was suspended on July 27 ostensibly for ordering demolition of a wall of a under-construction mosque allegedly without following the due process. Nagpal belonged to the UP cadre. Sources said that the charge sheet, which is believed to be running into 10 pages, was prepared based on a report of Commissioner (Meerut Division). It is being reported that the officer has got 15 days to respond to the charge sheet.

Salem’s extradition to India still valid: SC

EW DELHI: Gangster Abu Salem will continue to face trial in various cases in India, including the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, with the Supreme Court today turning down his plea for quashing all Abu Salem proceedings after Portugal's apex court terminated his extradition to India. The Supreme Court held that the verdict of Portugal court is "not binding" on courts here and Salem's extradition to India is still "valid in the eyes of law". A bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam, however, allowed CBI to drop additional charges slapped on Salem under TADA and Explosive Substances Act after his extradition. Salem had sought closure of trial against him in various courts here after the Portugal Supreme Court upheld the order of a lower court there, terminating his extradition for "violation" of deportation rules by Indian authorities.

Dec 16 gangrape: Verdict on juvenile deferred to Aug 19 N

EW DELHI: The judgement in the December 16 gangrape case involving a minor was today deferred till August 19 by the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) pursuant to a direction of the Supreme Court. The JJB presided over by Principal Magistrate Geetanjali Goel postponed the verdict for August 19 considering the fact that the Supreme Court has asked it not to pronounce its order till it decides a petition concerning the interpretation of the term "juvenile", police sources said. They said the board also posted for August 19 its order on sentence against the juvenile in a case in which he was earlier convicted for robbing a carpenter onboard the bus before allegedly assaulting the girl and her friend on the night of December 16, last year. The JJB's order was put off in the light of the plea of Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy for a fresh interpretation of the term 'juvenile' which he raised in the wake of the December 16 incident in which the 23-year-old was brutally

gangraped and assaulted in a moving bus in south Delhi. She died in a Singapore hospital on December 29 leading to slapping of charge of murder against the juvenile and other co-accused. The apex court had on July 31 asked Swamy to inform the JJB not to pronounce its verdict on the alleged role of the minor in the December 16 gangrape and murder case, till it decides the PIL. Swamy's plea will come up for hearing before the apex court on August 14. He has sought that the "mental and intellectual maturity" should be considered instead of age limit of 18 years for such offenders while fixing their culpability and contended that his plea would become infructuous if the JJB went ahead with pronouncement of its verdict. The inquiry against juvenile in the gangrape and robbery case had concluded on July 5 and the board had reserved its judgement for July 11. Since then, the Board's verdict has been deferred thrice, once on July 11, then on July 25 and today (August 5).

Y14 is unlikely to see a sharp revival, as recent events have diminished chances further, says Religare Research. It has therefore revised its FY14 GDP growth estimates from 5.3 % downwards to 4.5%, and also lowered its FY15 estimates from 6.0% to 5.3%. According to it “The INR’s free fall and the central bank’s debatable response have put paid to the thesis of easier cost of funds in the economy in FY14, pointing to a protracted revival, stretching well into FY15. Saying that the worst is yet to come, Religare believes that “the domestic macro has changed substantially since Jan’13, but only for the worse. While WPI inflation has been comfortable for some time now (CPI remains sticky on food), growth has been severely hit thanks to slowing investments and lately a weakening INR. It goes on to say “Leading indicators of Industrial growth, viz. PMI, IIP, eight-core, are all pointing to a prolonged slowdown, fuelled by weakening domestic demand, worsening export growth and declining investments. As such, we downgrade our FY14 estimate for Industrial growth (contributes 27.5% to GDP) to 1.3%, the lowest in 22 years, from 3.0% earlier, with a pick-up expected in FY15 to 3.1%, but more so towards the second half. However it believes that Agriculture growth is the only silver lining, saying “Amidst a sustained slowdown in the Industrial and Services sectors, the only silver lining is a better-thanexpected Southwest monsoon thus far, which bodes well for agriculture production and growth. Choose Balanced Funds In Volatile Markets By A Business Reporter

I

ndia’s fixed income markets were impacted, in the recent weeks, by the series of liquidity tightening measures by the Reserve Bank of India to strengthen the Rupee. With debt markets turning volatile after a steady run over the past year, investors are in a dilemma over their allocation in key asset classes, viz., equity and debt. “Balanced Mutual Funds offer a simple solution to this dilemma as they invest 65-80% into equity and the balance in debt instruments. Equity has the potential to deliver superior long term returns while debt provides stability to the portfolio. This diversification protects the portfolio from downside risks if either equity or debt enters a bearish phase says a just released Crisil Research study. The study reveals that balanced funds (measured by the CRISIL – AMFI Balanced Fund Performance Index) have outperformed the CNX Nifty (equity markets) across 3, 5, 7 and 10 year timeframes. Balanced funds also witnessed lower capital erosion when equity markets declined and enabled investors to capitalize from gains in equity markets by delivering returns higher or similar to those of the CNX Nifty (equity markets). Balanced funds were also less volatile (a measure of risk) with 17% annualised volatility over a 5-year period compared to almost 25% for the CNX Nifty. It is important for investors to look at an asset allocation approach; however the way it is executed is also equally important. Investors often tend to re-allocate assets based on market sentiments which may not be in their best interest. In comparison, balanced funds follow a well-defined asset alloca-

tion approach that offers a higher degree of protection on the downside but preserves much of the upside thereby serving investors well. The latest CRISIL Mutual Fund Ranking released for June 2013 reveals that UTI Mutual Fund led the tally of top ranked funds for the quarter with nine funds under CRISIL Mutual Fund Rank 1; Birla Sun Life Mutual Fund followed with six top ranked funds and IDFC Mutual Fund with five top ranked funds. The latest CRISIL Mutual Fund Ranking covers over 90% of the industry’s average assets under management (AUM) of the open ended schemes as of June 2013.

Workplace Biases Still Exists Delhi seems to be practicing discrimination rampantly. The other two cities are Pune and Chennai at 85% and 78% respectively. By A Business Reporter

ndia Inc, “mainly in the top 8 cities, is yet to adopt the concept of equal opportunity in its true sense says a study Bias@Workplace released by staffing solutions company, TeamLease. The study finds that while the Indian workplace is largely accommodating, discriminations still do exist on various grounds, especially while hiring. According to the report, 5 out of 10 employees have experienced one or the other kind of discrimination, indicating the strong prevalence of discriminatory practices while recruiting and at work. However, the situation is not all gloomy though because discriminations on the basis of caste and religion have become almost obsolete. But, prejudices based on qualification, gender and age in that order seem to be the most commonly practiced biases. Discrimination at workplace based on qualification goes as high as 50%. Another interesting revelation is the higher percentages (54%) of younger generation between 21 to 35 years who are reported to have experienced discrimination as compared to employees above 50 years. This may be contrary to popular belief; but it seems that the older you grow, less to 35 years who are reported to have experienced discrimination as compared to employees above 50 years. castes have ceased to be common occurrences, India Inc still has a long way to go before the work environment becomes truly bias free. Underlying preferential treatment is still witnessed in varying circumstances, debilitating the growth of the work force, especially women. It is very important for companies to have a clear policy on discrimination with proper enforcement; else productivity will be adversely affected. The TeamLease study further reveals that pregnant women or women with young children are at a relative disadvantage, both during the recruitment process as well as vying for opportunities at the workplace. While the percentage for this is not high, it is only desirable that the discrimination is completely eradicated from the system. The study also goes on to say that, although not significantly, but good looks are considered an added advantage in some metros like Pune and Mumbai. From a geographical perspective, Delhi seems to be practicing discrimination rampantly. S

unilkant Gupta, a leading flautist of the country, currently heads the music department of the Films Division. Bansuri players like Vijay Raghav Rao and Raghunath Seth have headed this department earlier. The mantle has now fallen on Gupta who has been a devoted pupil of Seth. This speaks of the trust that he enjoys, thanks to his innate qualities as a musician. Gupta, who hails from Lucknow, has trained under various noted musicians at the Bhatkhande College of Music which is now recognised as a university. Gupta has also trained under revered musicologists such as S C R Bhatt, Govindrao Natu and others. He has absorbed rich vocal music and knows compositions by heart thus enriching his capabilities as a musician. He was featured in an evening concert by the Dadar Matunga Cultural Centre on the death anniversary of musicologist K G Ginde. Gupta has experimented with the instrument in order to make it more amenable to music. Most bansuri players do not explore the entire range of the lower octave or mandra saptak as it is called. Gupta has designed a special set of bansuris to overcome this difficulty. He can easily play the ‘shuddha’ note M of

NEWS IN BRIEF SWING AND BEBOP MUSIC CONCERT

An NCPA–Jazz Addicts Presentation, Swing & Bebop Jazz Music Concert at Tata Theatre, is to be held on August 9 at 7.00 pm. This is a first attempt to feature this genre of jazz. The artists performing are Benny Soans (drums), Carl Clements (tenor sax), Woody (alto sax), Hideaki Tokunaga (guitar), D Wood (bass) and Jarry Singla (piano). Swing has inspired jive dancing and dominated the realm of popular music for decades. Bebop is a challenging form as it eggs the soloist to improvise on up-tempo themes. Created by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, bebop or bop requires polished skills and virtuosity from its performers, thus rewarding the audience.

the lower octave. He owns a self-designed long bansuri on which he can play the notes in the ati mandra octave. He played the Megh raga in the evening concert and could easily touch the note komal nishad or 'n' during the alap stage, receiving a thunderous applause from the audience. He also played the raga Maru Bihag in a very pleasing manner. It was a memorable flute recital for the listeners. Amit Choubey, who accompanied him on the tabla, was also a pleasure to listen to. He is a pupil of Alla Rakha Khan and Yogesh Samsi. Nupur Kashid, a young and aspiring singer and a pupil of Madhukar Joshi, sang the raga Marwa

and Miyan Ki Malhar in a fairly competent way too. The Sharada Sangeet Vidyalaya, which recently celebrated Guru Poornima, saw veteran singers like Murli Manohar Shukla and Neela Bhagwat preside over the function at which prizes were distributed to students who passed the exams held by the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. Divya Nadkarni, a student of music and a lecturer in English literature at the Ruia College, played the raga Jog at the ceremony. She is a student of the famous violinist Manaskumar and is shaping up as a violinist. Other students too performed to the best of their respective capabilities.

The first look of Kalyan and Rupali Guha’s ‘Narbachi Wadi’, based on the Bengali classic ‘Sajjano Baggan’ written by Manoj Mitra, was recently revealed at a suburban studio. The film, with a backdrop of farm workers in Kokan, is directed by Aditya Sarpotdar and stars Dilip Prabhavalkar, Nikhil Ratnaparkhi, Bhau Kadam, Kamlakar Satpute, Vikas Kadam, Kishori Shahane among others. The film is cinematographed by Rahul Jadhav and its lyrics are given by Guru Thakur. The film’s music is done by Mangesh Dhakde.

Purushaangik: a thrilling dance recital! By Vijay Shanker

A

ccomplished Bharata Natyam exponent Nilesh Singha and Kathak exponent Ayan Mukherjee jointly presented a unique programme - Purushaangik - that exposed the masculine style of dancing in their respective dance styles. The programme was held at the mini P.L. Deshpande auditorium and was appreciated for its concept and structural quality of presentation in both the styles. Bharata Natyam enjoys international recognition, thanks to the pioneering efforts of renowned exponents like Dr Rukmani Devi Arundale and Balasaraswati. Today, one can see Bharata Natyam being practiced in cities like London, New York and Paris among others. While this form of dance is extremely popular in southern India, Kathak is popular in northern India. Although Bharata Natyam is being performed extensively these days, rarely does one see a Kathak performance in the southern part of India, although the trend is fast changing. It was interesting to see the dancers Nilesh and Ayan open a dialogue with the audience emphasising the significance of both the styles. These dance

rabho Shivaji Raja is an animated historical drama based on the life and times of the legendary Maratha warrior – Chhatrapathi Shivaji Raje. The film is an ode to the King, who took on the Mughals and freed his land from their tyrannical rule of more than 350 years through his military genius. History remembers him not only for his heroism but also for his sense of justice and equality towards his subjects, irrespective of their class or religion. Narrated by senior actor Sachin Khedekar, this

forms are technically completely different and have their unique charm and dignity and hence neither presides over the other. These are like two beautiful flowers, each with its own beauty and artistic quality. The programme commenced with invocations at 'asta-disha', followed by Nartana Ganapati that portrays the power and glory of the elephantheaded God known as the remover of all obstacles and evil, performed bril-

liantly by Nilesh Singha. Ayan Mukherjee, a disciple of Sandip Mullick, performed Damru Baje, introducing the king of dance ‘Nataraja’ followed by Tal Dhamar in 14 beats, while Ayan created a fine impression with his command over technique and footwork. The audience was wonderstruck to see him appear with a beard. Ayan has a striking personality and hence the beard should have rather been discarded. While performing the Mahadeva Shiv Shambo in Revathi ragam, Nilesh incorporated two episodes - Ravana trying to lift Mount Kailash and the flow of Ganga with the untiring efforts of Sage Bhagirath. Nilesh is a powerful performer who displayed command not only in the intricate movements but also in maintaining the dramatic quality of the performance. After the Sargam Malkauns and Bageshri Tarana by Ayan, Nilesh performed the Thillana which was followed by the grand finale of the evening ‘Purushaangik’, performed by both Nilesh and Ayan with fine control over their movements and a wonderful synchronisation. This number also included the episode of Kamadeva being reduced to ashes owing to the Lord’s fury.

Superb animation film! 100 minute cinemascope animation film captures all the important landmarks in Shivaji’s life – from his birth, the Mughal period, influences, declaration of Swarajya, big battles and finally his coronation. The film also comprises songs by leading singers like Shankar Mahadevan and Swapnil Bandodkar. The film’s screenplay is a result of a deep research by senior historians like Shri Babasaheb Purandare and

Neenad Bedekar. The story, script and the screenplay is all based on a research on the available documents, letters, bakhar (scripts written on Shivaji in the 16th century) and have been put together by Neenad Bedekar, who has been closely associated with studying the story of this great Maratha leader. UANGZHOU, CHINA: Shuttler Ajay Jayaram notched up a stunning victory over higherranked Wing Ki Wong of Hong Kong in the men's singles competition to start India's campaign at the 2013 BWF World Championships on a positive note here. The 25-year-old Indian, ranked 24th, mixed attack with defence and played a patient game to beat world number 12 Wong 22-20 1721 21-15 in a 64-minute duel. He will next take on Pablo Abian of Spain in the second round. "It was a good match. I knew it won't be easy and I had to give everything. I tried to be patient as the shuttles were slow," Ajay said. The Chennai-born shuttler played a dominating game and didn't allow Wong to get near him, racing away to 20-16 at the Tianhe Indoor Stadium. However, Wong was not ready to let it go so easily as he clawed back but Ajay had the last laugh. "I started off well and

maintained a good lead throughout the first game. I committed a few errors at 20-16 which helped him to draw level at 20-20. But I am happy I could squeeze past him with a couple

of tight points," Ajay said. However, in the second game, Ajay let go a 13-8 lead to allow Wong forge a comeback into the contest. "In the second game, I was 13-8 up but he started playing more rallies and I lost my patience.

‘I’m a cricketer, not a terrorist’

Ajit Chandila

EW DELHI: Claiming innocence, tainted Rajasthan Royals spinner Ajit Chandila has said that the Delhi Police's proposed move to slap the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) charges against him is completely unfair as he is a "cricketer and not a terrorist". Chandila, who was granted an interim bail for two days (from August 3 to 5) to participate in the last rites of his elder brother, was optimistic that he will come out clean of the spot-fixing charges levelled against him. "I dreamt of becoming a good cricketer, and to an extent I achieved that. But a tragedy struck and my dreams were shattered. People have seen my performance in last two seasons of the IPL. I am clean and I trust the judiciary,"

I eventually lost my lead at 17. I was struggling with my fitness as I had recovered from viral fever a week back," he said. Ajay learnt from his mistakes and tried to cut down on errors in the decider. He gathered a good lead and didn't let it go to eventually emerge victories. "I dug in deep in the final game, keeping the shuttle in play without conceding too many errors. I'm very happy

Chandila told 'Zee News' after coming out on interim bail. Chandila said his family and he were in a state of shock after learning that the MCOCA might be levelled against him. "My family and I are in a state of shock that such charges are being levelled against me. I am a cricketer not a terrorist," he said. "My family has suffered a lot, and my brother was hospitalised the day I was arrested. But I have the support of my family. And soon, people will know the truth. I am innocent. I will make a comeback soon. I have no clue about the spot-fixing controversy. I have never been approached by anybody. I am absolutely unaware of this," Chandila added. The lanky off-spinner from

Haryana defended his lavish lifestyle, saying IPL offers a cricketer enough money to live like that. "IPL offers so much money that there is no need to do any wrong thing to earn money. As far as my lifestyle is concerned, everybody wants to wear good clothes, shades, etc. There is nothing wrong in wearing expensive things. So, if I had been spending on myself, it is my personal choice and nobody should be concerned about that," Chandila said. Besides Chandila, two other Rajasthan Royals cricketers -- S Sreesanth and Ankeet Chavan -were also arrested by Delhi Police during this year's IPL for their alleged involvement in spot-fixing. While Sreesanth and Chavan are out on bail, Chandila is still in jail.

with my performance today. I fought hard both mentally and physically. I need to play with the same focus and composure in the next round as well," he said. However, India's doubles and mixed doubles pairs had a bad day in office as they failed to cross the first hurdle. While the combinations of Aparna Balan and Arun Vishnu lost to Chinese Taipei's Min Chun Liao and Hsiao Huan Chen 15-21 17-21 in the mixed doubles, Ashwini Ponnappa and Tarun Kona suffered a 18-21 21-12 19-21 defeat to Japan's Hirokatsu Hashimoto and Miyuki Maeda in the opening round. In the women's doubles, Aparna and Siki Reddy N too lost in the opening round, going down to England's Lauren Smith and Gabrielle White 15-21 17-21 in 34 minutes. Saina Nehwal and P V Sindhu will start their campaign in the women's singles today as they got a bye in the first round.

Credibility of the game is important: Dravid N

EW DELHI: Former Indian captain Rahul Dravid expressed anguish over the recent IPL spot-fixing scandal and its fallout, saying that restoring the credibility of the game was of utmost importance failing which cricketers may lose respect of their fans. BCCI has been faced with a serious credibility crisis ever since the spot-fixing and betting scandal broke out in the sixth edition of the IPL. The whole issue led to N Srinivasan stepping aside as BCCI President and even the Bombay High Court declared that the two-member panel, constituted to probe the scandal, was "illegal and unconstitutional". "Things like this don't help, when we are on the front pages of the newspapers and not on the back," Dravid told ESPN Cricinfo. "There are so many fans and so many people who care deeply about this game and it is because of these fans that we are who we are as cricketers. Administrators are there because of the fans and the cricketers to run this game, so credibility of a game, or a board, or even a government for that matter, is important irrespective of what you do. If you are in public life it is important," he said.

BCCI President N Srinivasan got mired in the controversy when his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan faced betting charges along with Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra. Three players from Rajasthan Royals, led by Dravid, were arrested on charges of spot-fixing and the former skipper said such episodes were not good for the image of the players.

UMBAI: Backing the upcoming IPL-style football league, Trevor Morgan, who has taken over as head of the IMG-Reliance League’s onemonth training camp here, said if the tournament makes even 50 per cent of the impact as its T20 cricket counterpart does, then it would benefit the game. “The IPL has taken Indian cricket to another level and that has gone down right through the system. If (this) league has half that effect on the game of football in India then it would be great,” Morgan told reporters today after taking over the reins of the camp that started last Friday. Critics, especially I-League clubs, have slammed the new format and said it would not benefit Indian football, but Morgan, former coach of East Bengal, said the crowd would like to see international players participating in the tournament.

“You can’t run a programme down even before the season has started. The plans that IMG have are fantastic, the people (players) they want to try to bring in and to spread the game right across India. To get a chance to see players we only saw on television would be a great opportunity for all football fans across India,” he said. Asked if the I-League would be

affected because of the new tournament, the Perth-based Englishman said, “Nobody is going to know that until it actually happens. It could be the best thing that could happen to the I-League, it may not (also), who knows. But it (IMG-Reliance tournament) certainly is a great concept and it is fantastic. Only time will tell if it is going to be successful.”

Ronaldo told a news conference in Los Angeles, where Real are on a pre-season promotional tour. "I prefer to remember the good things from coaches. I don't spit on the plate from which I eat and I don't speak about people who say bad things about me. "We are going to face Chelsea, not their coach.
