hile the enthusiasm for bursting crackers has apparently come down, the BMC-run hospitals saw quite a number of cases of firecracker injuries. Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital, commonly called Sion Hospital, saw forty people coming in with burns and other firecracker related injuries in the five days of Diwali celebrations, out of which five had to be admitted. “There was no major case of injuries. All the cases were of minor burns. The ones that had to be admitted had burns but again, not severe. We are expecting cases to come till tomorrow morning (November 6),” said Dr. Avinash Supe, Dean, Sion Hospital. In the last three days, Nair Hospital saw 11 cases of Diwali injuries, out of which nine were treated on an out patient department basis, while two had to be admitted. “There was a case of corneal abrasion and another of superficial burns on the neck, face and a part of the chest. They were taken care of. No serious cases have come as yet,” said Dr R N Bharmal, Dean, Nair Hospital. Sunny Srivastav The BMC-run KEM Hospital saw some serious cases of eye injuries. hile the Mumbai University (MU) is constructing various study centers like the Nano-technology study center at Kalina, it seems that it has side-stepped its duties towards reserved category students for whom they are supposed to construct hostels in the state. According to a Government Resolution (GR) which was brought out in the year 2006, MU was given Rs 10crore by the state government to build the badly-needed hostels. To date, nothing has been done. According to the GR, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment had initiated the ‘Bapu Jagjeevanram Chhatrawas scheme’ (MSJE) for 100 girls and 100 boys belonging to the reserved categories. The scheme for construction of such hostels for girls is in operation from 3rd Five Year Plan while for boys, the same was started from 1989-90.The objective is to enable and encourage students belonging to scheduled castes to attain quality education.

Talking to Sanjay Vairal, senate member of MU, the ADC was told, "Even after the MU has received all the circulars, it has not started any construction work yet. These hostels have to be provided in three sub-centers of Thane, Ratnagari and Raigad.Students are not able to receive hostel facilities due to the shortage of hostel rooms in MU and fall prey to private lodges and paying guests. Though Rs 10 crore has been allotted to the varsity for the construction of these hostels, it is just prolonging the process since the last eight years.” The issue was also highlighted in
the annual senate meeting, wherein the varsity had stated that it has given out the proposals for constructing the hostels and have been sorting out the contractors for the project. According to pro vice-chancellor Dr Naresh Chandra, “The plans for the hostels are ready and we are just sorting out the contractors to undertake this project. The varsity has also proposed the hostel areas in Thane. As soon as the paper work is finalized, work will begin and will be completed within time”. It is still not clear, however, whether a proper time frame has been constituted for these stages.
spot, Sunny was profusely bleeding from his right eye. We rushed him to the hospital,” said Sunny’s mother Pinky Srivastav. Sunny was operated upon on Tuesday morning. “The doctors say that they have what they could have for my child but there as of now there is no vision in his injured eye. I am worried about Sunny future,” said Pinky who couldn’t hold back her tears. Ranjit Bansodi (13) from Vasai too ended up seriously injuring his right eye on November 3. His mother, Chandaben Bansodi, said, “He was with his friends while this happened. One of his friends lit a cracker and before Ranjit could reach a safe distance, the cracker exploded and hit his face. We have been asked to wait till the swelling subsides before further treatment can be done. From now on, we will never allow any of our children to burst crackers.” While the above cases happened with firecrackers, Geeta Shakare (40) who was on her way to the market in an auto rickshaw was hit by a stone that flew inside the auto rickshaw due to the impact of the crackers that were being burst by others on the road. The doctors at KEM hospital are unsure if she will regain her vision. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

The affected families seem to have received support across the political spectrum, including the Congress MP Milind Deora, Shic Sena’s Aditya Thackeray, another Congress MP Priya Dutt, BJP MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha, and people across religious faiths. Brief Background: The apartments were constructed on land leased to Pure Drinks Ltd in 1955, who received permission from the BMC in 1980 to develop it for residential purposes. Allegedly without getting the plans approved, Pure Drinks along with builders, Yusuf Patel, B.K. Gupta and P.S.B Construction Co erected seven buildings, two of which were high-rise buildings of 17

and 20 storeys. During the construction period, the authorities issued notices to the builders to stop work. The builders were fined and they paid the penalty and resumed work. After the construction, was completed nobody prevented the buyers from occupying their apartments or the buildings from forming cooperative housing societies. Unaware of these violations, the residents bought the apartments believing that they would get the occupation certificates in due course, as was the norm 25 years ago. Since 2005 the residents have been in litigation with BMC, trying to defend their homes and save their families from being thrown on the streets.

A
petty fight between two kids over biscuits took a tragic turn when a seven year old boy lost his eye sight after being hit with an iron nail shot at him from a catapult by his 10-year-old neighbour. The incident was reported from the Santosh Bhuvan area of Nalasopara (East). The victim was returning to his tenement in Kargil Nagar when his ten year old neighbour, Vijay (name changed), asked for some biscuits from
the packet he was carrying. Angry over the refusal, Vijay allegedly loaded an iron nail into his catapult and shot it at the victim, piercing his left eye. He was rushed to a private eye hospital in Vasai where doctors confirmed that the injury was so severe that he had lost his sight. A complaint has been registered at the Nalasopara police station, over what was evidently a petty fight between two kids which took an unintentional but ugly turn, said the police.
Besides this, the executive committee arrived at two more decisions which include development of the 5.2 km long road running from NH-8 to Naigaon railway station (on Western Railway suburban section) and construction of a rail over bridge at Naigaon and connecting roads for the creek bridge. The committee also decided to lend Rs.80.42 crore to the J.K. Banthia Mira-Bhayandar Municipal stant plying of heavy vehicles Corporation for its StormProject in the area. The recent spike in onion price was not due to cartelisation or hoarding.” The CM also expressed apprehension that very shortly there would be a reverse crisis with a steep fall in prices which would hit the growers. Maharashtra produces more than 40 per cent of the country’s annual onion production estimated at more than 16 million tonnes. In Delhi, retail prices of onions have declined to Rs.60 a kg from Rs.80 a week ago. Due to rains in key areas of the state, onion harvesting got delayed, thereby pushing up retail prices to as high Rs.80 to Rs.90 per kg in most of the urban areas of the country. The government has also made hectic efforts to crackdown on hoarders and speculators who are keeping onion prices artificially high. According to a Food Ministry official, due to an estimated 7 per cent drop in current year’s onion production, the prices rose sharply in the last three months. In 2012-13, the annual onion production was more than 16.6 million metric tonne. This year the production is estimated to have declined to 16.3 metric tonne.

he Bombay High Court has observed that offence of molestation committed by a naval personnel while he was in service will have to be tried and court martialled by Naval Commander-in-Chief and not by a criminal sessions court. The order was passed recently by Justice Sadhana Jadhav while hearing an application filed by the Union government through Commanding Officer of INS Tunir seeking permission to take over the case and court martial of one of its personnel Narender Umed Singh Dadu, who is accused of atrocity and outraging the modesty of a woman, reports PTI. The application challenged the order dated May 27, 2013, passed by a magistrate court in Uran, committing the case filed against Narender to the Alibaug sessions court and also the order rejecting the Centre's plea seeking to take over the case in order to court martial Narender. It is alleged that on March 18 and 20 this year, Narender and his friends had passed lewd remarks against the daughters of one Siddharth Punaji Gajbhiye (also employed in INS Tunir). A police case was registered against Narender under sections 354 (outraging the modesty of a
woman) and 509 of IPC. On March 25, Narender was arrested. On April 1, the Union of India filed an application before the magistrate seeking to take over the case for trial under the Navy Act. The magistrate, however, rejected the application after observing that Narender is accused of offence punishable under the provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, which is exclusively triable by the sessions court. Aggrieved by this, the Union government approached the High Court. The High Court, while allowing the application, observed that since the offence was committed by the accused while he was in service and under the supervisory jurisdiction of the commander, the Commander-inChief shall try the case. The court further observed that even though the act is not committed in the course of discharge of official duties, rules contemplate that Commander-in-Chief shall try the accused by following the procedure prescribed by Criminal Court and Court Martial Rules. The court quashed and set aside the magistrate's order committing the case to the sessions court.

The arrested men have been identified as Wasim Sayyed (23), Yuvraj alias Selvam Pillai (19), and Shivkumar alias Kalwa Vishwakarma 19. After committing the crime they had planned to flee to Karnataka via Kalyan. The police are on the look out for Azgar Afzal Khan who also allegedly raped her, and Arjun Pillai and Rahul Bairagi who had lured the girl to the bridge and called up the rest. According to the Dindoshi police officers, the three had been co-ordinating with each other to flee the city as soon as they realised that the victim had approached the cops. However they were caught when they asked one of the accused to get a car for them to go towards Kalyan to escape being captured on the CCTV at the railway station. The officers said that the two of the arrested accused, who had been hiding in the forest area of Sanjay Gandhi National Park towards Kurar in Malad east, reached Diva railway station and got off as they were well aware that Kalyan railway station has CCTV installed and they could be seen and arrested if they are captured in the recordings. The police officers have now launched a massive hunt for the other three in the forest at Kurar as they suspect that they are still hiding there. Five out of the six men are history sheeters and have various cases against them, including robbery, theft, and kidnapping. According to a police source, a year and half ago they had registered a missing case of four minor girls including the victim. "The girl had been missing while the victim had allegedly eloped with her boyfriend Rahul, the other three girls had eloped with the rest of the gang members Wasim, Arjun and Afzal," said the officer. Police sub inspector Dasne and Gaikwad, duty officers, have been suspended following an enquiry into why at first only a non-cognisable (NC) complaint had been registered. It was only when a complaint was received by the ACP, that an FIR was registered in the case. According to the report, the police officers on duty have said that the girl at first did not mention the rape, only that she had been teased and being slapped. However, looking into the seriousness of the matter, the DCP is recommending stern action against the two. Until the enquiry is completed, the police officers will remain suspended.

n a horrific incident, the curse of ‘honour’ killing claimed the life of a 17year-old girl who was raped and murdered by her own biological father and his friend in Kashimira. The monster dad and his friend who have been arrested confessed to their crime. According to the Kashimira police, on-duty PSI Vilas Mate, during routine night vigilance, overheard two wait-
ers at a highway hotel speaking about the mysterious disappearance of a girl who had come to Mumbai from her village in Uttar Pradesh. Mate immediately took in the two for questioning. Investigations led to one Shivchandra Rajbhar alias Raju (42), a resident of Dachkulpada, who after sustained interrogation, revealed the name of prime accused, Ramesh Rajbhar (45), along with whom he had raped and murdered a 17-year-old girl.
Shockingly, Ramesh happens to be the father of the girl. The accused led the investigators to the crime spot where the girl’s body was recovered in a highly decomposed state. “The girl had apparently eloped to Uttan in Mumbai with a boy of her village in Gazipur district of Uttar Pradesh, two months ago. Her father Ramesh Rajbhar, tracked her down and bought her to his friend’s tenement in Dachkulpada, where both tried to convince
her to leave the boy,” said PSI Mate. After she flatly refused to obey, the duo forcibly took her to an isolated forest area were they raped the girl before strangulating her to death with her own dupatta. A case under sections 302, 201, 376 (g) of the Indian Penal Code and under the relevant sections of the stringent Protection of Children From Sexual Offences Act, 2012, has been registered against the duo.

Both the cousins have strongholds in the Congress Party. And yesterday, hundreds of Congress party
workers assembled in front of the police station to try and pressurize the wife to have the FIR cancelled. Talking to ADC, AAP activist and lawyer Nazneen Khatri, who is representing the victim, said, “Her husband Ramzan has burned her face with a heated spoon and once in a day he beat her. But from the last 15 days, she was kept under house arrest and tortured in front of the other wives at his Bandra residence. I was in the police station where I saw Heena crying. he Congress-led State Government and the NCP-headed Home Ministry have failed to appoint a regular Superintendent of Police (SP) for the Thane (Rural) region. This crucial post has remained vacant for over a year now. Following the abrupt transfer of former Thane (Rural) SP, Ranvindra Sengaonkar (who was issued marching orders after the Palghar Facebook episode) last year, Deputy Commissioner of Thane’s Social Service Branch, Anil Kumbhare, was given the additional responsibility of offi-
ciating as the Thane (SP) from October 27, 2012. Since then, Kumbhare has been handling the dual charges. With as many as 34 police stations under its jurisdiction, including a few sensitive and even coastal based ones, the all-important Thane (Rural) policing region covers an area of around 9,000 square kilometres, and has two Additional SPs, nine Sub Divisional Police Officers (SDPOs) and three Deputy SPs on its pay-roll. On the other hand, the Mira Road sub-division, which has five police stations under its jurisdiction, is also without a regular SDPO since

one missing from his family, and grown up alone, Mumbai Police’s Force-one commando Ganesh Dhandge celebrated his first Bhai Dooj with his sisters. The Dhandge family never thought that the whole family, along with Ganesh will be celebrating this day. Fortunately the miracle happened. In 1988, Ganesh was a class II student, aged 7, when after school at Indiranagar in Thane, he went off with a classmate who wanted to visit an uncle in the village. The two were accompanied by another boy. The trio took a long distance train and after traveling for about an hour, Ganesh was told by his companions to alight at some station and wait till they returned. Ganesh waited at that station for around a week, and as it was Ganpati festival time, he survived by eating prasad from various mandals. After the Ganpati festival was over, he got into a train and fell asleep, waking up somewhere in south Mumbai. Ganesh was offered a petty job in return for food and he worked there for some months. While roaming near his workplace, he was hit by a car and suffered head injuries. He was admitted to a hospital by a passerby where it took him four months to recuperate. The case relates to Dr Vishwas Sapatnekar, who operated upon Dashrath Kangule on June 30, 1994 and discharged him on October 5, 1994. However, when he found no relief, Kangule referred to Dr Subodh Mehta. As per his

NOTA in White for LS, Pink for Assembly By Prashant Hamine
V
oters in five states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, New Delhi, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram that are going for assembly elections between NovemberDecember this year will be the first ones who will be able to get first hand experience in using the None Of The Above (NOTA) provision. Whereas, voters in Maharashtra and rest of the country will have to wait for their turn at least for the Lok Sabha polls due some time in April 2014. Acting upon the Supreme Court order the Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued instructions to all the Chief Electoral Officers of all the states on October 30 directing them to make provisions for insertion of NOTA on ballot papers used in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). As per the order for the ensuing 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the colour of the ballot paper will be in White. While for the Assembly elections due in September 2014 the colour of the ballot paper will be Pink. The depiction, NOTA shall be printed in the last panel on the ballot paper of the EVM after the words ‘None Of The Above’. As per the EC orders for the Assembly polls, the words NOTA in capital block letters in white with black background with rounded off corners will appear on Pink ballot papers of EVMs with the words

Alleging that the opponent doctor had not carried out the operation properly which resulted in re-operation amounting to medical negligence and consequently deficiency in service on his part, the complainant approached the District Forum seeking a direction that it may be declared that the opponent
doctor was deficient in rendering services to him. Kangule also claimed from the opponent doctor, an amount of Rs.1,99,993.15 towards reimbursement of medical expenditure besides an amount of three lakh by way of compensation. The District Forum after going through the complaint, written version filed by the

In a related order regarding NOTA votes, the EC while issuing a clarificatory order has drawn attention to provisions of clause (a) of Rule 64 of Conduct of Election Rules, 1961 read with section 65 of Representation of the People Act, 1951. The EC order states “the candidate who has polled the largest number of valid votes is to be declared elected by the Returning Officer. Therefore, even if the number of electors opting for NOTA option is more than the number of votes polled by any of the candidates, the candidate who secures the largest number of votes has to be declared elected”. The NOTA provision also does not apply to contests where equal number of candidates for equal number of seats or for that matter in case of just sole candidate contesting a election to a seat. prashant.hamine@afternoondc.in

Mission to Mars I
NDIA has done what China failed to do. The Chinese Mars Mission was a failure. India has now joined the elite space club – with Russia and the United States. Indian scientists have demonstrated that they have superior space technology. The launch yesterday was perfect – from Sriharikota. Everything went off without a hitch. The scientists have successfully placed the Mars orbiter in space: It is expected to reach Mars in September next year. The Congress has expectedly been trying to make capital out of the successful space launch. It is using the happening as one more plus point in the poll campaign. Evidently, the prime opponent of the Congress – the Bharatiya Janata Party – has not been quite happy with the launch in the election year. It is echoing former ISRO chief’s observation that the money – Rs.450 crore – could have been more usefully spent. The ISRO launch has sent a clear, firm message to China: India can now produce long distance missiles and is wellequipped for facing any threat and for hitting any place in China. The question however is whether it is necessary to provide any proof of our advance in space technology and also to prove we can hit long-distance targets. Undertaking the Mars mission is only an assertion by India. It achieves preciously nothing else. The mission expects to collect data with regard to surface and atmosphere over Mars. What will such information benefit us with? Are we ever going to go to Mars and settle down in a place which is 785 million miles away from earth? The wealthy United States can afford to spend money on such useless missions. India does not have money to spend on self-glorification operations.

UNDAMENTALISM is rearing its ugly head once again. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has openly said that it would take part in politics. On the other hand, even the liberal Jammiat Ulma-iHind has talked about the Muslim vote. The impending parliamentary elections may be compelling the political parties. Yet the polarisation they are trying to effect is telling upon the co-existence of the Hindus and the Muslims, something which they have come to accept. Take the RSS first. Apparently, it is not happy with the working of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), its political wing. The RSS had its way in imposing the Hindutva poster boy, Guajrat chief minister Narendra Modi, as the BJP’s candidate for the office of Prime Minister. Maybe, the RSS is upset over leaders like L.K. Advani, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley who are seen as the liberal elements in the BJP.

He asked the so-called secular parties not to invoke bogey of Narendra Modi to create fear among Muslim voters. He said that the parties should instead seek votes “on the basis of promises fulfilled during their tenure and the promises they would make through election manifestoes.” I have no exception to the statement Madani made except his invoking the phrase of “Muslim vote.” There is no Hindu or Mus-

Bihar case: travesty of justice
The Achilles’ heel of the Congress is nongovernance as well as the incumbency factor. I wish there had been early elections so that the new government would have planned something for the country for a long tenure. But the six months between now and the elections will be without any serious work. Ministers will be only crossing the T’s and dotting I’s. Consequently, the economy is going haywire. If the ventures in the private sector can register a phenomenal growth, why not then the public sector undertakings? Yet the worst is what the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the BJP are doing at Ayodhya. They were responsible for the demolition of the Babri Masjid and the killing of hundreds of Muslims. They are trying to create a similar atmosphere by wanting to stage a rally which the state government has rightly banned. I By entering politics, the RSS is going back wish the two parties were to show the same on the undertaking it gave Sardar Patel, verve in getting justice for the Dalits, who are Union Home Minister, after partition of the Hindus but undergoing all indignities and country. ‘We lose ourselves in the practice of consumption’ I
F you know how to look into its nature and identify the source of nutriment that has brought it in, you are already on the path of emancipation. So if you notice that the block of fear, despair and violence in us have become so important, that is because you have been constantly fed the seed of violence, fear and anger in us. Stop feeding them, is our practice. If you don't stop feeding them, if you practice only to deal with the symptom, you don't go very far. That is why the practice of consumption is a very important. That has to go together with the practice of transformation. You are using mindfulness in order to embrace your anger, your violence, in order to bring a relief. You can get a relief, but if you are exposed to the kind of consumption that will continue to feed your violence, then you will not succeed completely in your practice. That is why mindfulness and consumption is very crucial for healing self, for healing family and society. There is a text left behind by Buddha about this, about consumption, about food. I have sent a copy of that text to the Department of Nutrition of Harvard University. I asked them to study because there is always a Department of Nutrition in every university. TEAM INDIA ROMPS HOME VICTORIOUS! DHONI and his ‘men in blue’ deserve to be congratulated for clinching the ODI series against the Aussies at Bengaluru on Diwali by posting a mammoth 383 runs with a double century by Rohit and two sixties by Dhawan and Dhoni himself. But, it needs to be said that the Kangaroos fought grittily till the end and did not give the win on a platter. Credit for giving a lot of anxious moments to the Team India supporters who filled the Chinnaswamy stadium should be given to this man, Faulkner who was raining sixes and fours in the midwicket region and threatened to repeat his Mohali performance and to their No.10 batsman, McKay, who is only a bowler. He held on for 37 balls to score 18 runs, giving excellent support for Faulkner who was on rampage and posted a 115-run partnership. Ultimately he was bowled by Jadeja but the fact remains that he could not be dislodged by any of our bowlers for so long and the crafty Faulkner kept him away from much of the bowling by taking singles on the last ball of each over to retain his strike. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane
HEARTY congratulations to the
Don’t ban opinion polls THE Election Commission’s intentions to ban opinion polls in the run-up to the elections do not seem to be sound in law, and certainly not desirable in practice. The reason given of voters being influenced prior to polling and therefore result of such polls should be withheld until after the end of the voting. These are flawed arguments, and a ban, while imposing needless restrictions, will not in any way enhance the purity of the elections. Whether the opinion poll influences the voters or not, there is not reason to ban them as the election campaign closes 48 hours before the polling and political parties and their supporters are free to indulge in propaganda to influence the voters till then. If the parties and the candidates are allowed to try and influence the voters during the campaign period, why cannot media or other agencies who conduct surveys be allowed to function. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

Muharram: victory over evil
THIS fallen bus stop pole at Krishna Vatika in Dahisar east has exposed how poor raw materials have been used in manufacturing the pipes which are used for the bus stand. The Islamic month of Muharram in which the faith of Mohammed delivered a body blow to terrorism centuries ago is here and brings the message of victory over evil. Muslims globally hold prayer meets to spread the word of peace and tolerance. Every Muslim should try to spread the spirit of oneness and see through the machinations of vested interests who create sectarian strife to bring disharmony and turmoil in our world. SHARMAS are generally sober and soft natured. But in Bengaluru we witnessed massacre in Chinnasamy stadium as the Mumbai batsman Rohit Shama went from strength to strength and hit a purple patch by hitting a double century against an Australian attack. Thus he joined select band of cricketers — Sachin Tendulkar and Sehwag to notch up a double hundred in a 50-over game. Even evening rain could not stop Rohit to make a match of it after a slow and sedate start. We saw Ishant Sharma giving away 30 runs in an over and helped Australian team to establish an early lead in the 7-match series. Rohit Sharma’s robust double hundred with 16 sixes eclipsed Shane Watson’s record hit of 15 sixes against Pakistan and helped the side to make a 57-run emphatic win in the end. ROHIT Sharma bombed the Aussie camp with a cracker of an innings with sky rocketing 16 aerial blows over the fence apart from some amazing hits that blew the Kangaroo nation to pieces. Our team celebrated Diwali a day in advance as India wrapped up the ODI series with ease as Rohit Sharma entered the record books for sending the maximum number of hits over the fence. iii) The Middle Ganga Plain has immature alluvial soils. A poor drainage causes accumulation of sodium salts that renders the soil infertile. The soils generally lack nitrogen and need manure and fertilizers. iv) The Lower Ganga Plain has laterite red and alluvial soil. Laterite soils exist in the South Western part and are acidic and lack humus. Red soils are also acidic and deficient in humus. Tarai soils also lack humus. Alluvial soils rich in humus and alkalinity are found extensively.
Short Notes 1 Physiography of Ganga Plain Ans: i) The Ganga belt is the world’s most extensive alluvial plain formed by the deposition of silt by numerous rivers. ii) The major rivers in this area are Ganga, Yamuna, Chambal, Gomati, Ghaghara and Koshi. iii) The Plains are flat, making it conducive for irrigation through canals and the area is also rich in ground water reserves. iv) The low lying zone of the rivers in the Upper Ganga Plain is known as ‘khadar’ of new alluviuym while ipland are called the ‘Bangar’ of older alluvial. Want to study Mechanical Engineering in Singapore
I have just finished my first year in a liberal arts university in California. I want to transfer to a national university that has a better ranking. What do I need to do? —Abhijith First and foremost you must realize that transferring does not just include an application. There will still be a few months of an adjustment period to the new location and college. You will need to have a very high GPA and should have a good amount of extra-curricular activities as well. In addition it is
important to come up with solid reasons other than wanting to move to a college with a better ranking to support your decision to transfer schools. You will have to write an essay or two for the colleges that you apply to, send them your transcripts and make sure that you fill up the application forms as well. Some of the colleges that are on the common application will allow you to apply through the common app. Good luck!

is a Partner at OnCourse and a Harvard graduate, and is also a Psychology major with a minor in Economics I am currently in the 12th and will be taking my final IB exams next year. I would like to apply for Mechanical Engineering in the UK and Singapore. Will my IB grades matter? —Pooja I hope you are taking physics and mathematics at higher levels and possibly even chemistry at a lower level, as this would allow you be better prepared for college level engineering classes. When applying for engineering in the UK it is essential to know what kind of engineering you are looking to study. In this case be sure that you would want to study Mechanical Engineering, as you will not be able to switch from one concentration to another.
In terms of your IB grades, yes they will matter. After you apply to colleges you will get ‘conditional’ offers in most cases. If you meet the condition that you get from the college you will be able to attend that university. Getting a conditional offer does not mean that you are guaranteed enrollment into the college.
I am just completing my LLB from K.C College. Can I apply to the US/UK for an LLM without work experience? If yes, what universities can I look at? —Arman You are eligible to apply for an LLM right after your LLB. Most programs prefer that you have some amount of experience even if it may be summer internships this will give you an advantage. It is also important to have a clear understanding of which field of law you have a specific interest in as it would be vital in deciding what college you want to apply to. With an average of a first class your chances of admission to programs at Georgetown, Cornell, Penn, LSE, which have some of the best programs, would increase significantly. You will also require 2-3 teacher recommendations in addition to your grade transcripts in order to apply.

Some Nights by FUN
New indie-pop kids on the block, FUN have been topping the charts lately. The pop anthem, ‘Some Nights’ is just not an upbeat tune but also poses a very important question through its lyrics. Most iconic lines of the song being, ‘Oh Lord, I still don’t know what I stand for’ which some would say expresses the existential angst of a youth who is quite a long way from home.
As the band is American, it’s very possible they’re talking from the perspective of American soldiers in Iraq/Afghanistan. It’s a great listen, full of energy and some cool afrobeats thrown in as well.

Says Sunitha Perumal, Country Product Manager, EF International Academy
T
he scope of studying abroad has expanded over the years. Thanks to globalization, we can now access the best of universities across the world. Studying abroad definitely provides students with a macro understanding of the world and keeps them competitive and abreast. Students can better their understanding of global culture, economics and their interdependencies while also gaining a different view of international affairs, politics and social issues. While abroad, a new academic interest or perspective on your major may emerge. Studying at a university abroad allows you to study subjects that are not available at your home country. It also gives your resume a nice boost and improves your post-graduate employment prospects, particularly if you’re considering a career in business, international affairs, or government services. Students and parents are aware that the cost of education has been on the rise ever since the rupee has been sliding. With the fluctuation in currency, students will have to shell out 15 – 20 per cent more on their fees, education loan, and living expenses which could in turn increase the financial burden on a student aspiring to study abroad. Although the fall in the rupee seems to have shaken the aspiration of students willing to study abroad, it has not shattered the dreams
« BEYOND LD KRUTIKA (NITA) JAGGI

of students wanting to pursue their dreams says the ASSOCHAM Report (The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India) published in June 2013. Like always, education is <<Ms. Sunitha perceived as a long-term Perumal investment, and financials are planned years in advance, particularly when one looks for superior education in notable and top-rated institutions abroad. Parents will also see to it that there is no compromise on the quality of education to offset the increasing cost of studying abroad. Therefore, a fluctuation in the rupee will not impact students’ decisions of studying abroad. Although the expenses have increased by about Rs. 3-4 lakh, it has not impacted the decision making processes. Anxious students and parents are taking extra effort in re-planning their funds to pursue their dreams. The potential return that foreign education gives is the biggest reason for
students applying to foreign varsities. Changing Perspective: Why Should You Still Consider Education Abroad? The weakening rupee has definitely increased the burden on students. The rupee fluctuation has been a norm for many years now. While the value of the rupee against the dollar was about Rs. 45 in 2010 it was at Rs. 52 by 2012 and further weakened to Rs. 60 in early 2013. Given this scenario there were approximately about 1 lakh students who travelled for their undergraduate studies to the US and roughly about 55,000 students who travelled to the UK in 2012. Many students usually factor in currency fluctuation in their study abroad education investment. Though the rupee has been on free fall recently, the currency fluctuation is a factor of consideration when it comes to studying abroad. Although the Indian Economic situation is not favorable at the moment students are willing to bite the bait and take that extra financial burden for their education. The efforts are worthwhile as the US
« MENTOR’S DESK
and UK provide the best and the most progressive education streams while the US more specifically is known to offer dual majors and flexible choices during university studies. Thus they not only provide excellent education, but also allow students to start earning through internships while studying. Indian students have predominantly chosen run of mill careers in Engineering, Medicine, Business or Law. But now they have to wake up to new challenges. Students now have to invest in education to be able to prepare themselves for opportunities or jobs that do not exist today but will come up in the future, just as all the jobs around IT and computers just did not exist 20 years ago. How to tackle the problem of depreciating Rupee? Students can manage the fluctuating currency by speaking to their respective banks for further loans. Now, banks have also introduced top-up schemes for education loans where they fill the gap created by the exchange rate fluctuation. If you have a relative in the destination country, you could probably take a loan from the local bank in that country; as the interest rates will be much cheaper than in India. It would also give you an option of repaying your loan in the same currency if you are employed in the same country after completing your education.

‘You can always make it big when you have faith and belief in yourself,’ says Karan Gulyani from Media Relations
I
am an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer. After completing my aircraft maintenance engineering I had to struggle a lot. I had given almost a dozen interviews in the airlines industry but nobody hired me. After almost a year and a half of tough days, finally I had to give up on aviation and chose a career that would be promising and would help me in the long run. That was one of the reasons I chose Media Relations.
‘Media Relations
is a fun career’
The one thing I like about Media Relations is meeting new people every other day. This profession directly or indirectly connects to media and media is one thing which never gets boring. You meet a lot of people and communicate with them on a daily basis. I always wanted to meet the celebrities and this profession helps me achieve this. My company handles several high profile designers, fitness experts, and celebrities and I love meeting them and working for them. Education has helped me a lot. It makes one responsible and focused. It gives you the ability to tackle situations in life. Though I am an engineer I am doing pretty well in PR too. I guess education is the best weapon an individual can have. Training days in engineering were different than Media Relations. There we used to deal with tools and equipment. In Media Relations it is a lot different. Here it was a bit difficult to understand the job in the first few weeks but my seniors in the office helped me a lot. They had tremendous patience because they knew I was not from this background. But when you start to understand the world of Media Relations it is just mesmerising and fun in its own way. I am currently working as a junior executive. My job is to cultivate and maintain close and productive relationships with journalists,
bloggers and editors with regard to the clients that my company handles. For the engineering course it cost me Rs.6 lakh but for Media Relations I have not spent anything. The only investment I had to do was to give my time and patience to <<Karan the field and I also had to Gulyani leave my hometown Delhi and move to Mumbai. All that time spent with friends is now part of my memories. Remuneration for a fresher in Media Relations is approximately about Rs.10 to 12 thousand and it totally depends upon the individuals’ calibre. It also depends on the firm. On an average you take almost two to three years to be an established professional. In this field one can earn good money if one is a well-established professional. The advantage in Media Relations is that you can build your own identity and name in the field. Once you achieve that then you can earn a good living for yourself. Maintaining relations is one big achievement in itself. Initially you have to face some difficulties. Talking to journalists and bloggers can be a little tough. It all depends on how you tackle the
« PEER SPEAK
situation. Struggling days can be hard initially for everyone. But once you get your hand on it, you can easily talk, source and maintain your relations with the media. My advice for those who want to take up Media Relations is that you have to keep calm and be patient. You can always make it big when you have faith in yourself. The objective of Media Relations is to cultivate and maintain a good image by providing better knowledge and understanding of the organisation’s goals and clients by the various media, and to effectively communicate information through the media to the public. Media Relations plays a very important role. In today’s world of instant communications, the role of Media Relations is even more enhanced. It is extremely important to maintain good relationships with the media and the public. There are several concerns, issues and relevant news to be conveyed to the public from time to time about the company, its product, services and beliefs. The field also presents opportunities to provide information with clarity. If your product is good and has a good image, people talk about it. Media Relations helps to earn public acceptance, confidence and loyalty and maintain an excellent corporate image. As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

IDEAS OVER HIERARCHY By Ritu Mehrotra, Vice President HR Global Talent Management, Bristlecone
T
here have been many instances in our lives when we used to get conscious while writing our answers in exams if we sensed a teacher watching us from behind. Even the right answers seemed to be wrong because we used to get scared. What if we are writing incorrectly and the teacher gets to know it. Well, the scenario at the workplace is more or less similar. Employees feel hesitant to talk in front of their authorities, reluctant to voice out their opinions because of not being sure of what they will say and what kind of reaction it will welcome from the boss. Hierarchy shakes their confidence. Nowadays, everyone wants to work in an organization which allows freedom to express opinions, freedom to differ with the management, freedom to raise questions or voice innovative ideas, and most important - freedom to individual working style.
Chain of communication simplified Fortunately things have changed for the better at workplaces now. Earlier
it seemed that a rigid decorum has to be maintained in regular working hours with the higher authorities, but now even they consider losing a bit in front of their employees to bring out the best in them. However, the decorum is not out of the window but, more and more stress is laid on innovation of ideas which can only be the result of a free working environment. The protocols are still maintained but the kind of mindset the employees have pertaining to their seniors has metamorphosed to a great extent. Companies are acknowledging the significance of autonomy at the workplace with every passing day. In this era of competition, nothing gives companies, an edge over others than innovation of strategies and ideas. Innovations do not happen under pressure or restraint. Seniors are aware of the fact that even a normal freely flowing discussion with a junior level colleague can bring the utmost ideas for business development. But what if the co-worker has been pondering on an idea and assumes it best not to be shared because he fears being ridiculed or
questioned for thinking. The idea which could have laid the foundation for better future achievements dies a quiet death. To avoid such situations and not to lose on ingenious <<Ritu Mehrotra ideas, companies are encouraging interactions between the high level authorities and other employees.
and workplace by easing out the ways to reach to authorities. Organisations have shifted their focus to employee issues at a large level to make themselves aware if the employee is actually excited about the work or just dragging himself to office. This has become a greater concern for the employers as it affects the productivity of the entire workforce, thus negatively influencing the overall growth of the firm. Every organization these days is crystal clear with the fact that what can support them in the Boss, a co-worker and companion long run are ideas and not hierarCompanies are adopting the idea chy. In order to keep pace with the changing work life culture, companies are striving to provide a healthy work-life balance to its employees and incorporate the culture of ‘freedom at workplace’ to the optimum level. Many renowned corporations believe in allotting the employees a decent amount of time span in which they are free to follow their passions other than work which gives way to innovation, productivity and rejuvenation of employees and establishes a win-win situation. Ideas and innovation can stream in from anywhere. Casual interactions among colleagues, interactive sessions with managers and weekend games at workplaces can be organized to establish an environment where employees can work with a liberated and free mindset, devoid of all inhibitions and presumptions. Companies now swear by the fact that employees have to be encouraged to take decisions and should be made a part of the organization in order to retain them. They now work towards making leaders and appreciating victories and eliminating the fear of delivering failures or being shouted down by seniors. This will as a result empower them to contribute to the firm’s development.

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2013 Why do we need nutritionists? Our body requires us to eat at regular intervals and we do so, religiously, but for some reason we don’t know what to eat. Until I became a Nutritionist, I didn’t know either. Should we eat more of protein or carbs? Are egg yolks considered bad cholesterol? Is ghee fattening? I am diabetic can I still have sugar or artificial sweeteners? Is red wine good for the heart? We often hear these questions. Nutrition, I must say is a funny science; one individual’s food is another individual’s poison. Hence to understand facts vs. myths and the optimum use of food as fuel, we definitely need nutritionists in more ways than one.
GETTING HEALTHY! Nutrition to the body helps support life and so does a Nutritionist. Sonea Kanal, Nutritionist, CDE, CHHC, AADP, tells Naressa Coutinho how she took up this career to improve her health and that of the people around her. She calls on the youth to join in her mission and to become responsible nutritionists.
Why did you choose to become a Nutritionist? As a child my immunity was always compromised where cold and cough were my best friends. My resistance and energy levels were never the same when compared to the other kids. Thanks to technology, I began using the internet to read about immunity and how pharmaceutical drugs/antibiotics could be avoided and substituted with food/supplements, as a more natural alternative. I guess I made a right decision and I feel blessed. When I hear kids say, “I cannot do this, I am unable to do that, I fall sick often,” - I can relate to them. Doctors and parents must start inculcating good dietary habits, some physical activity and limit the use of fake foods. Avoid eating from McDonald’s, KFC, any frozen foodstuff, fruit juices in tetra packs and start eating fresh foods. This change in lifestyle will make us fresh, healthy and happy people.
choose to apply to the undergraduate course in SVT College of Home Science (Juhu/Churchgate) to ensure in-house admission for the degree program. Degree is 3 years and post graduation is 2 years with options to specialization. SNDT Women’s University (Juhu, Churchgate) is a parent institute to SVT college of Home Science that offers this course and you can choose to specialize in Dietetics or applied Nutrition depending on your career choice. Nirmala Niketan (Churchgate) A few colleges down south in Bangalore and Mysore have Nutrition, Dietetic and Food related degree as well as post grad courses. Nutrition and fitness is becoming a booming industry. Hence, now a lot of private institutes and fitness experts have started small short term certificate courses too. Just to name a few BFY- Prabhadevi K11 Academy- Founded by Kaizzad Capadia is a really good institute in Santacruz (East). But you need to have some background of food and human nutrition to understand certificate courses.
unique. Mind plays an important role in all processes of the human body. For a good nutritionist, this should be the most important tip. If your mind is in shape and healthy, there is no way the fat will stay on your waist and make you unhealthy. Hearing out the client is another attribute to being a successful nutritionist. « OFFBEAT CAREER
What is the scope of growth for a dietician and where can he/she find work? Nutrition is a very diverse science and it depends on what area is of interest to you. Once you have made that decision, you know your target audience; you then explore and grow your expertise in that area. For example: Clinical Nutrition for medical centres and hospitals Clinics with sub-divisions for Diabetes and Management, Renal Therapy, Sports Nutrition, etc. Lifestyle Management includes Obesity, Diabetes, and Hormonal Imbalances. Child care consists of Obesity Management in children and pregnant women The list is endless. Dieticians mostly work for hospitals and their practice is very clinical, almost paramedical. They work alongside doctors and the diets are purely therapeutic. The scope would depend on each one’s skill and acquirement. Education qualification required to practice: The degree courses offered by colleges are very limited in Mumbai and have their own prerequisites of having a science background in Junior college. Admission can get challenging since seats are limited. One may
From an income point of view, how lucrative is this career? Starting salaries these days are anything between Rs.10,000 to Rs.15000 for a fresher. If you’re a Post graduate then you could expect anywhere between Rs.20,000 to Rs.25,000. A freelancer may earn anywhere between Rs. 30,000 to Rs.1, 00,000. If it’s a commercial setup with multi centres involved then salaries may vary. Tips to be a good nutritionist: A good nutritionist makes ‘food therapy’ easier and not complex. We constantly hear of new diets and new research with such conflicting information about food, food choices, and publicity of unhealthy food, making it difficult for the common man to decide what’s best for him/her. Hence it’s extremely important that a nutritionist, in his/her own capacity, help people understand what they ought to eat. It is important that he/she is educated, aware and well informed about the developments and how each individual is

What are the Advantages and disadvantages of becoming a nutritionist? Advantages: People look to you for advice since not everyone knows about how food works, or their knowledge is limited to what they see or hear on television /media ads. You lead a healthy life and so do the people around you. Disadvantages: Limited Institutes offering the course make it worse with limited seats. Traditional and conventional theories. Most institutes offer it only to the women, not men. Curriculums should introduce modern Nutrition as a new subject Your message to the youth who would like to become dieticians. “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” –Nelson Mandela. When I got into this field I had just one simple idea that if I could improve my health with the way I eat, I could help change Mumbai and India too. It is an ongoing progressive vision and I welcome the youth to join this movement. It is a big challenge; there is a lot to learn and you will be learning something new with every new client. Welcome on board and be the change you want to see.

Life is an Ice Cream MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2013
earth are not necessarily the ones that make the most advanced products, but the ones that make us feel good about using them. It’s not about the mystery of an idol at a temple. It’s about what we feel once we’re in its environs. Faith again, is a feeling. The biggest stars needn’t be the best actors, it’s what they make us feel. The most effective marketing communication and the most successful movies, are actually the ones that make us “Feel”. So, the point of this observation was Life, as an ice cream, would be truly enjoyed only if we made everyone else around us feel good. A kind gesture, a genuine compliment, a thoughtful deed, some support and just being a good human being would go a long way in adding the texture to the ice cream that our life is. Ingredients make one good, but the Texture, will make them great. There’s a limited time for it. So enjoy this, before it melts or crystallizes, else, the magic would be lost.
NAMO OH NO?
You either hate him or love him, Narendra Modi has always garnered a mixed response from one and all about his leadership and political strategies. We throw the floor open to find out what our young readers feel about Modi possibly becoming Prime Minister of India.
He’s a phenomenally strong personality, and while not everyone can agree with everything he’s done and said, it might be time that India had a leader with some backbone. He’s done wonders for Gujarat, economically, despite his rather authoritarian approach towards governance. —Valmik Kumar, Student
Imagining Modi as India’s PM sends a shiver down my spine. What happened in Gujarat in 2002 might just happen across the country. And then he will safely hide behind the nexus of GDP which he will make grow with absolutely no concern about the human development index. What is the use of growth when there is no development? His lack of human interest clearly shows in the statement he made – that the women in Gujarat are suffering from malnutrition because of their fashion consciousness. I cannot fathom the rationale behind the re-election of Modi last year. People are being fooled with false notions and being mesmerised by numbers which at the end of the day is of no use to them i.e. common people. His mind-boggling PR machinery has to be blamed. I can actually come down to a level where I’d choose an amateur Rahul Gandhi than a religious bigot as the head of our secular country since we don’t seem to have better options to choose from. —Achanta Ramya, Research Fellow

Fresh Dreamliner scare N
EW DELHI: Air India's trouble with its newlyacquired fleet of Dreamliners seems unending as one of these planes from London landed here under emergency conditions after warning lights blipped in the cockpit panel indicating problems with its brakes. The incident came hours after another of its state-ofthe- art Boeing 787s gave a scare after one of the windshields in the cockpit cracked while landing at Melbourne
early on Monday. The latest in the string of incidents involving the Dreamliner, flight AI-116 from London to Delhi carrying 174 passengers and ten crew members, made a landing under emergency conditions at the IGI Airport on Monday after warning lights blipped. The pilots, adopting precautionary measures, sought emergency landing as they approached the airport, Air India officials said, adding the aircraft landed safely on Runway 28 at 0222 hours, the officials said. The aircraft was checked later but no fault was found in the brake system, officials said suspecting that there could be some glitches in the electronic panel.
1.34 lakh Indians return; Govt watching situation in S Arabia N
EW DELHI: With 1.34 lakh Indian workers already returning to the homeland, Government is closely watching the situation in Saudi Arabia which is targeting illegal foreigners under its new labour policy, Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi told PTI on Tuesday. Asked about the drive in Saudi Arabia under which foreigners who have not corrected labour and residency status under its new labour policy -- Nitaqat -- are being deported, Ravi said that till now no incident of harassment of Indian nationals has been reported. "The issue in Saudi Arabia has already been taken up. So far they have not entered into any house for checking. Saudi
Arabian government has given specific instructions not to harass people but to check properly and not enter any house," Ravi told reporters at the sidelines of an event. He said those Indians who are coming back as they are unable to stay there, are also given assistance by the ministry. "1.34 lakh Indians have already come back from Saudi Arabia," Ravi said. He said India is closely watching the situation and in touch with various associations as well. The embassy is very actively assisting in case of any problem, he added. S. Arabia has launched a strict inspection campaign to target illegal foreign workers after the seven-month grace period ended on Sunday.
RIHARIKOTA: India's maiden mission to Mars was successfully launched on Tuesday with its polar rocket placing the Mars spacecraft precisely into an intended Earth orbit in its first-ever historic inter-planetary odyssey in a bid to join a select band of nations. In a "new and complex mission design", ISRO's PSLV C 25 successfully injected the 1,350-kg 'Mangalyaan' Orbiter ('Mars craft' in Hindi) into the orbit around Earth some 44 minutes after a text book launch at 2.38 PM from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, marking successful completion of the first stage of the Rs.450-crore mission. Entering a new frontier in space technology, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)'s mission is aimed at establishing India's capability to reach the Red Planet and would focus on looking for presence of methane, an indicator of life there. "The PSLV C25 vehicle has placed the Mars Orbiter spacecraft very precisely into an elliptical orbit around Earth," ISRO chief K Radhakrishnan told PTI after the launch. This is the 25th flight of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and "it has been a new and complex mission design to ensure that
India successfully launched its first mission to Mars on board PSLV C25 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (ISRO) at Sriharikota, on Tuesday. The mission is expected to reach Mars' orbit by Sept. 24, 2014. we would be able to move the MARS Orbiter spacecraft from the orbit of Earth to the orbit of MARS with minimum energy," he said from Mission Control Room. After going around Earth for 25 days in an elliptical orbit (perigee of 250 km and apogee of 23,500 km), the golden coloured probe, the
size of a small car, would embark on a 10-month long voyage to Mars around 12.42 AM on December 1. It is expected to reach the Red Planet's orbit by September 24 next and go around in an elliptical orbit (periapsis of 366 km and apo-apsis of 80,000 km). "I am happy to say the

spacecraft is in good health. It has done a task what had to be done," a visibly relieved and happy Radhakrishnan told PTI. The rocket injected the satellite into Earth's orbit over South America, which was captured by ISRO's seaborne terminals on board Shipping Corporation of India's vessels SCI Nalanda and SCI Yamuna in the South Pacific Ocean. There was a data break of over 10 minutes after burn-out of the third stage and the Mission Control Centre got signals on ignition of the fourth stage. "The biggest challenge will be precisely navigating the spacecraft to Mars," said Radhakrishnan, adding, "We will know if we pass our examination on Sept. 24, 2014." The robotic satellite, which is undertaking the over 200million-km long journey to Mars, is equipped with five instruments, including a sensor to track methane or marsh gas - a possible sign of life -- on Mars. If all goes well and the satellite orbits the Red Planet, ISRO will become the fourth in the world after those of the US, Russia and Europe to undertake a successful Mars mission. The Mars missions of China and Japan have failed.
Nigeria raises issue of security of its nationals N
EW DELHI: Nigeria has issued a note verbale to India conveying concerns over the security of its nationals and demanded immediate arrest of those who killed a Nigerian in Goa last week, prompting the government today to assure it that all issues will be addressed in a cooperative manner. "We have lost one of our nationals in a cold-blooded murder. We have raised the issue with India and written a note verbale on Friday to convey our concerns over the security of our nationals. "The guilty should be immediately apprehended and brought to justice. And they should also compensate the family of the victim," Tokunbo Falohun, Minister-Press in the Nigerian High Commission, told PTI. He also said the High Commissioner has received a call from the External Affairs Ministry regarding the matter. According to official sources here, Joint Secretary in MEA's Western Africa Division spoke to the Nigerian High Commissioner assuring him that India and Nigeria have excellent relations and that all issues will be "addressed in a cooperative manner in line with our friendly ties". Asked if there will be any "repercussion" of the incident as was being indicated by a Nigerian diplomat yesterday, Falohun said if the matter was "justifiably" dealt with, then there will not be any repercussion. "There is a large Indian community working in Nigeria. There are two temples in Lagos and all Indians have freedom to worship and for their other activities. We also are demanding the same," he said.

The market opened down with a gap at the 6282 points level. It then turned into a range bound movement until 12.12 p.m. The index then rose sharply and registered the day’s high at the 6304 points level at 12.32 p.m. It then declined and turned into a range bound movement until 2.52 p.m. The index then declined sharply and registered the day’s low at the 6244 points level at 3.28 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained below its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 60 points and closed below the psychologically important 6300 points level. Sentiment was bearish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 32 were losers, while 18 stocks closed in the green. All the sectoral indices barring realty and PSU closed in the red. Substantial selling was witnessed in FMCG, healthcare, IT and technology stocks.
TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 11%. This change is moderate and indicates a moderate participation by investors.
Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 761 were gainers, 618 were losers and 56 remained unchanged.

a strong market but with a negative bias.
Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 6025 points level. The next support is at the 5921 points level. Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 6357 points level. The next resistance is at the 6428 points level.
Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 6267 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 6230. Support (2) = 6207. Resistance (1) = 6291. Resistance (2) = 6328. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index after having formed two doji patterns (indicating indecisiveness amongst investors) has formed a small black body candle. This is negative and indicates that the bias has shifted towards the sell side of the market. Further, the index has dropped below the 5 days moving average. Both these indicate a negative bias. However, the index is still above the 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the averages are rising and also positively trended. Further, the velocity parameters too are positively trended. Both theses indicate a positive bias. Investors are advised to hold long positions but with a strict stop loss at the 15-day average at the 6198 point’s level.

STIL enjoys the privilege of being among the few Indian yarn producers capable of producing and supplying any type of spun yarn under one roof and has emerged as one of India’s largest manufacturers and exporters of synthetic and blended dyed yarn. STIL is among the few recognised textile organisations that has the expertise to develop an extensive range of value-added yarns including cotton, acrylic, polyester, viscose, modal, lycra and tencil and their brands, among others. Besides, Sutlej is carving a niche in today’s fast changing economic climate with diversified offerings comprising fabrics, garments and home textiles. The improving fundamentals, timely expansion from time to time, consistent modernization and well-built management quality give strong visibility to revenue & profitability going forward. STIL is expected to post an EPS of Rs 82.8 in FY14 and Rs 93.9 in FY15. At the CMP of Rs 175, the share is trading at a P/E of 2.1x on FY14E & 1.8x on FY15E. We recommend BUY with a target price of Rs 225 in the medium term.
Angel Broking calls a ‘Buy’ on GMDC CMP: Rs. 103 Target: Rs. 131
GMDC reported a disappointing set of numbers during 2QFY2014 on the back of weaker-than-expected volumes. Nevertheless, we maintain our Buy rating on the stock. Lower volumes dent top-line: The company's net sales declined by 54.2% yoy to Rs175cr due to 43.9% yoy decline in lignite sales volumes to 1.1mn tonne. Lignite production was affected due to heavy rains. The Mining segment and Power segment sales declined 63.0% and 39.3% yoy to Rs134 and Rs57cr, respectively. EBITDA declines in line with decline in top-line: EBITDA declined 66.8% yoy to Rs 72cr due to decline in sales. Outlook and valuation: GMDC has been reporting disappointing volumes for the past 2-3 quarters on the back of poor execution, regulatory hurdles etc. Also, it has failed to take the much-anticipated price hikes to pass on the impact of higher diesel costs. Nevertheless, we believe the current stock price factors these negatives. GMDC is currently trading at an inexpensive valuation (3.1x FY2015 EV/EBITDA) compared to its peers. The key catalysts for the stock are likely to be: 1) regulatory approvals for brownfield expansions, and 2) commencement of production from Umarsar mines. We value GMDC at an EV/EBITDA of 4.0x FY2015E with a target price of Rs 131 and maintain our Buy rating.
HDFC Securities calls a ‘Buy’ on Aegis Logistics CMP: Rs. 159 Target: Rs. 182
Triggers: Cap on subsidized LPG cylinders - Indian government has announced a major change in the way LPG cylinders are distributed. Government decided to cap the number of subsidized cylinders to households to 9 per year. This cap will help prevent the illegal diversion of cooking gas cylinders to commercial and Auto gas segment. The company has already seen a good spurt in Retail Autogas & Commercial Cylinder space. Thus Gross Profit/tonne for the gas division is likely to increase due to higher contribution from the high margin Retail and Commercial space and volume dip in low margin wholesale gas business. Oil price deregulation – Governments decision to de regulate oil prices gradually will increase demand for Liquid Logistics Business. Part Deregulation in Diesel Pricing – is also positive for Gas Distribution business as LPG will now be more competitive vis-a-vis Diesel. Further CCEA’s approval to hike the natural gas price to $ 8.4 per mmbtu – is positive for Gas Distribution business. Valuation & Recommendation: The Oil and Gas logistics business continues to show good potential as India’s consumption of petroleum, LPG and chemicals increases. Aegis Logistics is poised to take advantage of growth opportunities by setting up additional capacities at different Ports in Liquid Logistics and by increase in turnaround time in Gas business. The Policy change of Oil price deregulation and Cap on Subsidized Cylinders together with Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme to distribute subsidies for cooking gas will further boost the growth opportunities for the Company in its Gas business. At the CMP of Rs.154.40 the stock is trading at a P/E of 6.8xFY14E EPS. We feel the valuations are cheap considering the expected growth in earnings, low debt levels, higher stability in bottom line and higher return ratios. We feel investors could buy the stock at CMP and further add on declines to around Rs.135 to Rs.140 band(~6.0xFY14E EPS) for sequential targets of Rs.182 and Rs.201 (8.0x and 9.0xFY14E EPS) over 1-2 quarters.

ashing in on the good equity market conditions, fund managers' raised their exposure to bank stocks to more than Rs 26,800 crore in September over the preceding month. According to the latest data available with Sebi, the mutual fund (MF) industry's investment in banking stocks stood at Rs 26,838 crore as on September 30, accounting for 15.75% of their total equity assets under management (AUM) of Rs 1.70 lakh crore. In August, mutual funds' exposure to banking stocks had touched the lowest level in four years to Rs 22,744 crore. However, the investment had risen to as high as Rs 43,659 crore in December 2012. Market participants attributed the
increase in investment in banking shares to measures announced by the new Reserve Bank of India (RBI) chief Raghuram Rajan coupled with overall surge in the stock market. Banking stocks climbed in September, after falling for four consecutive months, on value buying and a slew of measures announced by the RBI. During September, the banking index (bankex) surged by 6.4%, while the 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) rose 4%. Rajan, in September, had announced steps to stabilise the Indian currency and liberalise the banking system, including higher overseas borrowing limits for lenders and simpler processes for opening branches. Mutual funds are an investment vehicle that is made up of a pool of funds collected from many in-
vestors for the purpose of investing in securities such as stocks, bonds, money market instruments and similar assets. In 2012, there was consistent investment growth in banking stocks by the industry's equity fund managers and their exposure had risen from 17.23% of total AUM in January 2012 to 21.15% in December. The increase in allocation of funds to banking stocks in 2012 was largely attributed to declining interest rates. In September this year, banking was followed by software space where the mutual funds' investment stood at Rs 23,797 crore. While the consumer non durables accounted for Rs 13,921 crore, pharma stood at Rs 14,444 crore and petroleum products at Rs 9,933 crore.

BUSINESS BRIEFS High-Tech Item Makers Shifting Focus From China To India
High-tech product manufacturers from sectors like aero-space engineering are shifting their focus towards India from China due to the increasing cost of production in the neighbouring country, EEPC yesterday said. "Costs of manufacturing (in China) is no more cheap the way it used to be, with their banking under stress and the pressure on the government to cut rebates. The Chinese firms are no more the top contenders for the global outsourcing. This gives Indian engineering sector an opportunity," EEPC India Chairman Anupam Shah said in a statement.
Urea Import May Drop By Up To 40% This Fiscal
Urea imports are likely to drop by up to 40 per cent to 4.5-5 million tonnes in the current financial year as the demand is sluggish and there is carryover stock, an official said. The country had imported about 8 million tonnes of urea in the 2012-13 fiscal, as per the official data. "We have imported about 4 million tonnes of urea so far. We are not going to import much in the coming months because demand has slackened and there is also a carryover stock," a senior Fertiliser Ministry official told PTI.
Services Sector Contracts For 4th Successive Month In Oct
India's services sector activity witnessed a moderate improvement in October from September's four-and-a-half year low of 44.6, even while indicating a fourth successive monthly contraction amid economic uncertainty, an HSBC survey said yesterday. The HSBC/Markit purchasing managers index for the services industry inched up to 47.1 in October from 44.6 in September, the fourth successive monthly contraction of service sector output across India.
IOC Asks Govt To Compensate For Interest On Borrowings
State-owned Indian Oil Corp (IOC) has asked the government to compensate it for the interest it has to pay on loans taken due to delay in payment of fuel subsidy. IOC in 2012-13 had to shell out Rs 3,420 crore in interests on loans it took to bridge the delay in payment of subsidy on diesel, cooking gas and kerosene. The company has written to the Oil Ministry saying there was "no established mechanism in respect of timing and quantum of under-recovery compensation to oil marketing companies by the Govt. As a result, the OMCs face serious liquidity constraints even for meeting revenue expenditure and have to resort to heavy borrowings, which in turn lead to high interest burden to the OMCs."

It’ll be a tough battle for West Indies’ bowlers: Sammy
Spotlight on retiring Tendulkar as India-Windies clash
K
By Tapan Mohanta
OLKATA: Cricket has been left overshadowed by the farewell carnival surrounding the iconic Sachin Tendulkar and India will have to keep emotions in check to ensure that they are not distracted from the task at hand against the West Indies in his swansong two-Test series starting here today. The centre stage will belong to Tendulkar, who will begin pulling the curtains down on his glittering career here. The 40-year-old veteran will call it quits after his 200th Test with the one starting tomorrow being his 199th. Amid an upsurge of emotions among fans and administrators of the game alike, Tendulkar would look to make it memorable through his bat against a team, which has promised to steal the limelight by thwarting him. Given the hype and hoopla surrounding the series, it would take a herculean effort from the West Indies to avoid being just bridesmaids. Tendulkar's imposing presence will dominate the series and why not? In a controversy-free career spanning 24 years, Tendulkar has been the most worshipped and followed cricketer who has against his name, almost all the batting records including
Sachin Tendulkar inspects his bat during training session at Eden Garden in Kolkata on Tuesday.
most runs and hundreds in international cricket. Treated like 'God' by his fans, it will be one nostalgic moment for sportsmad Kolkata when Tendulkar comes on to bat in his penultimate Test on the hallowed Eden Gardens. The majestic ground has been witness to many of Tendulkar's ups and downs since his Eden odyssey began in an ODI against Sri Lanka on January 4, 1991. His miserly three-run last over that had denied South Africa the winning six runs in the Hero Cup semifinal on November 24, 1993 is part of cricketing folklore here. At the same time, the 1996 World Cup semifinal against Sri Lanka when fans hurled bottles and set the stands on fire after an Indian collapse began with Tendulkar's dismissal would also remain etched in the memory. Having played 25 matches in both Test and ODI formats here, the most by any, Tendulkar will appear in his 13th Test at the Eden and the fans would pray that the batting stalwart bids adieu to the historic ground on a high. Adulation and admiration aside, Tendulkar has been subjected to criticism in recent times. He has had a tough time especially in the last cou-
ple of years when he took 21 Tests and 12 ODIs to get to his 100th International centuries that came against minnows Bangladesh on March 16, 2012. But in Tests, Tendulkar is stranded at 51 tons and is yet to score a century in 21 matches since his 146 in Cape Town on January 2, 2011. Tendulkar's farewell aside, India will start the series as firm favourites with the young batsmen rising up to the challenge even though the bowling is a worry. On the other hand, despite their big claims of playing hard cricket and spoiling Tendulkar's farewell series, the Windies did not quite show quality in a three-day practice match against Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association last week. This will be a perfect dress rehearsal for Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men before the tough away challenges in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia next year. India's batting is in the groove and the return of Shikhar Dhawan will strengthen the middle-order. The left-hander struck a rollicking 187 in his debut innings in Mohali only to sit out in the second essay picking up an injury and going on to miss the last Test against Australia earlier this year. After his comeback in the IPL,
Dhawan was in blistering form in the recent ODI series and the southpaw would look to lay the foundation at the top with Murali Vijay, while Cheteshwar Pujara will play the sheet-anchor role. KOLKATA: Indian batsmen have been in blistering form and the West Indies skipper Darren Sammy feels that the two-Test series will pose a tough challenge for his bowlers. "We have respect for India. When you look at their recent one-day series (against Australia that India won 3-2) their batsmen have been in good nick. No one wicket is the prized wicket. Everybody in the top six minus Vijay has been playing really good and has been in good form. It would be a tough battle for our bowlers," said Sammy at the prematch press conference. Sammy, however, said he was hoping that the Indian batsmen commit mistakes. "They have been playing a lot of one-day cricket. They have been on the go. It was a run-fest in the last one-day series. So hopefully their batsmen will come out playing a lot of shots and we will get some edges down at slip or some lbws or some bowled outs. Hopefully they will be in that same frame of mind and make more mistakes early up in their innings," Sammy said on the eve of the their opening Test," Sammy added.
HONOUR TO BE PART OF TENDULKAR'S FAREWELL SERIES: SAMMY West Indies are honoured to be part of Sachin Tendulkar's farewell series but their skipper Darren Sammy said their focus would be on the entire Indian cricket team and not only on the legendary batsman's wicket during the two-match Test series. "We're honoured to play a series in India which will bring curtains down on Sachin's career but we're here to compete and play very hard cricket," Sammy said. "He's a great ambassador for the sport. He deserves all the hype and the praises he's getting," the skipper added.
FRENZY AROUND TENDULKAR’S 199TH TEST NOT A DISTRACTION: DHONI

Mahendra Singh Dhoni said the lack of a genuine all-rounder is a concern and the team needs to find someone like Ravindra Jadeja who has been rested for the two-match Test series against the West Indies due to a shoulder strain. The absence of Jadeja has tilted the balance of the side. "It has been a bit of a concern. I've always said that we need good seam bowler or a frontline spinner who can bat a bit. At times you don't realise the importance of a particular player. People criticise so much. "Now that we don't have Jadeja we are thinking whether to have a fifth bowler or maybe another spinner who can bat a bit. Is it that the batting will become thin," Dhoni told reporters at the pre-match press conference. The skipper said there are not enough options at the moment. "We will have to
find someone to do the job. It's always good to have a plan B or C... At the moment we don't have too many who can do the job," Dhoni said. India are in a quandary over the bowling lineup and they are not sure whether to play with a five-men attack or give in-form Rohit Sharma the Test cap while using him as a part-time offspinner. Asked whether Ajinkya Rahane or Rohit Sharma would get the No 6 spot, the skipper said: "Well the thing is whether we want to go with four bowlers or have a fifth to the attack, or someone who can bowl a bit if needed. That's one major decision. Though the decision is one, it's divided into three different aspects. "If we go with five bowlers, both of them may not play. If we need someone who can bowl a bit of off-spin then Rohit plays. Thirdly, if we go with four specialist bowlers, Ajinkya stays," he said.

As far as the team is concerned, not thinking anything apart from cricket. There're certain things that has to happen and will happen. You noticed something that's been going for about last 10 years. Now that Sachin has announced his retirement, you're noticing it more," he said. The skipper said they're just committed to win the series against the Caribbeans and then decide on dedicating it to Tendulkar. "First

‘Lack of all-rounder has been a bit of a concern’
OLKATA: India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said the team was trying to focus on the cricket despite the frenzy around Sachin Tendulkar's 199th Test match in his farewell series against the West Indies. He said the team was trying to keep distractions to minimum. "It's something that was expected. It's always good to know such things in advance so that you can mentally prepare well. We have tried best to keep ourselves away from distractions and focus on cricket. So far so good. Once the game starts, I don't think the team is entertaining anyone. I think we are sorted," Dhoni told reporters at the pre-match press conference. Dhoni said nothing has changed, neither the preparation nor the mind-set, ever since the senior

"He has given this country and its people so much that is beyond imagination. His achievements in cricket speak for him. It's a big loss to the world cricket. We will miss his presence on the cricket field," Yogeshwar told PTI. "It would be a sad day for all of us when he will walk on to the field for one last time during the Wankhede Test. I would like to see him score centuries in both the Tests. He should make the series memorable for every cricket-loving Indian," said the London Olympic bronze medallist. In a controversy free career, Tendulkar has been the most
worshipped cricketer who has against his name, almost all the batting records including most runs and hundreds in international cricket. World Championship silvermedallist Amit Kumar wished Tendulkar the very best and said he would be best remembered for his commitment to the game. "I wish him all the very best for his life after cricket. He has been an inspiration for the youth. He has done so much for cricket and it's just amazing to see all his world records. I would like to see him score many runs against the West Indies and bow out on a high," said Amit.
Tendulkar’s retirement biggest in cricket history: Gavaskar
NEW DELHI: Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has termed Sachin Tendulkar's retirement from international cricket as the "biggest" the game has ever seen, while another former great V V S Laxman feels that CAB's farewell arrangements won't cause "distraction" to him. Asked if Tendulkar's impending retirement after two-Test series against the West Indies is the biggest farewell that the world cricket has seen, the veteran replied, "I think so. Any retirement is greeted with sadness. After November 18, there will be no Tendulkar in action. So the frenzy is understandable. He is the biggest cricketer after Sir Don Bradman and his retirement is the biggest of them all." Gavaskar even took a dig at the media, who, according to him made endless speculations about Tendulkar's retirement till the cricketer himself made it official. "I used to tell you guys that you don't know what you will miss once he (Tendulkar) retires." Laxman said Tendulkar's innings against Haryana in the Ranji opener at Lahli should act as a confidence booster for the legendary batsman as it came under tough conditions. "He played a match-winning knock in the second innings but I was more impressed with the amount of time he spent out there in the middle," said Laxman. Both Gavaskar and Laxman spoke in the same vein about Tendulkar remaining unaffected by CAB's grand farewell arrangements, which many think could cause distractions for him. "I don't think, these things (farewell celebrations would be a distraction). The moment he landed, he made it clear that he would like to concentrate. As far as the arrangements goes, Kolkata has always shown love for its cricketers. Sometimes, it can be overwhelming but you don't get this kind of love anywhere in the country," Gavaskar told 'NDTV'. Laxman on his part said, "Eden Gardens is a special ground. In Kolkata, right from the time you land at the airport till you board a flight back, the love and affection you get is unimaginable. People come up to you and speak about the game."
