A
n open war between light mafias operating illegal parking spaces has come to the fore in Shivaji Nagar. Within a matter of 10 days, several incidents of crime were reported in the area by gangs trying to control this thriving illegal business. In the latest incident, that of a taxi driver being threatened for refusing to pay extortion money, Deonar police booked two criminals. On the basis of the complaint by taxi driver Bashir Ahmed Qureshi (53), the Deonar police have charged Mohammad Sultan Mehndi Hasan Shaikh (35) and Irfan Shabir Qureshi (30) under sections 384 (extortion), 506 Part-II (criminal intimidation), 323 (assault), 427 (damage to property), 34 (common intention) of the IPC and 4.25 Arms Act. Sub Inspecter D.B. Mohite of the Deonar police said, “These criminals demanded Rs.1,000 per vehicle for illegal parking. Speaking to ADC, the victim, Mohammad Raees Ansari (33) alias Kala Pappu, said that the accused came on three bikes, a Yamaha FZ, an old Pulsar and a Honda Unicorn. They opened fire on the victim while he was parking his bike in front of Alam Gir Hotel at Road No.6 in Baingwanwadi, a short distance away from his home, at around midnight. According to the police, Ansari is a big light mafia man in the area and does illegal business of power theft which he supplies to slum colonies in the area. A history-sheeter, Ansari has 19 cases registered against him for offences like murder, attempt to murder and extortion between the period 2002 to 2013 at Shivaji Nagar, Trombay, Goregaon and Pant Nagar police stations. He has been externed out of city limits twice. He has also
been booked under the MPDA Act. Sub Inspectar Mayur Bhamre of Shivaji Nagar police station said, “We are verifying the CCTV footage in front of Alam Gir Hotel and the accused will be arrested soon. However, we have booked two unknown accused in the case under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 34 of the IPC and 4.25 Arms Act.”
