he loss in 2011 World Cup final to India in Mumbai still rankled but Sri Lanka exacted sweet revenge carving out a splendid and merited win over India. For long the mainstay of their batting, both Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayewardene playing their final T20 match thus went out on a high.

Full Report on Pg 29 Yuvraj Singh was all at sea, scoring only 11 runs from 21 deliveries. Kumar Sangakkara's brilliant unbeaten knock of 52 runs was the glue that held the Lankan innings together.

Let him relax for a while! He is too tired to read the whole manifesto at a time.

Thisara Perera wielded the willow with panache, remaining unbeaten on 23 from 14 deliveries, which included three humongous sixes.

The Lankan bowling at the death was remarkable, with both Nuwan Kulasekara and Lasith Malinga giving absolutely no leeway to the Indian batsmen.

Force India's brilliant driver Mexican Sergio Perez covered himself and the Sahara Force India team with glory with his third place finish. Teammate Nico Hulkenberg also distinguished himself with his fifth place finish to round off a fine day for the team. LIGHT MAFIAS DARKEN LIFE By Tariq Khan

A

n open war between light mafias operating illegal parking spaces has come to the fore in Shivaji Nagar. Within a matter of 10 days, several incidents of crime were reported in the area by gangs trying to control this thriving illegal business. In the latest incident, that of a taxi driver being threatened for refusing to pay extortion money, Deonar police booked two criminals. On the basis of the complaint by taxi driver Bashir Ahmed Qureshi (53), the Deonar police have charged Mohammad Sultan Mehndi Hasan Shaikh (35) and Irfan Shabir Qureshi (30) under sections 384 (extortion), 506 Part-II (criminal intimidation), 323 (assault), 427 (damage to property), 34 (common intention) of the IPC and 4.25 Arms Act. Sub Inspecter D.B. Mohite of the Deonar police said, “These criminals demanded Rs.1,000 per vehicle for illegal parking. When Qureshi refused to pay the money, they threatened him by holding a knife to his neck and extorted money. PSI Santosh Narote and his team arrested the duo.” In yet another incident, bike-borne

Speaking to ADC, the victim, Mohammad Raees Ansari (33) alias Kala Pappu, said that the accused came on three bikes, a Yamaha FZ, an old Pulsar and a Honda Unicorn. They opened fire on the victim while he was parking his bike in front of Alam Gir Hotel at Road No.6 in Baingwanwadi, a short distance away from his home, at around midnight. A 9mm bullet pierced Ansari’s left thigh. A profusely bleeding Ansari

was helped by a friend and taken to the Sion Hospital and is out of danger now, informed Shivaji Nagar police. According to the police, Ansari is a big light mafia man in the area and does illegal business of power theft which he supplies to slum colonies in the area. A history-sheeter, Ansari has 19 cases registered against him for offences like murder, attempt to murder and extortion between the period 2002 to 2013 at Shivaji Nagar, Trombay, Goregaon and Pant Nagar police stations. He has been externed out of city limits twice. He has also

been booked under the MPDA Act. Sub Inspectar Mayur Bhamre of Shivaji Nagar police station said, “We are verifying the CCTV footage in front of Alam Gir Hotel and the accused will be arrested soon. However, we have booked two unknown accused in the case under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 34 of the IPC and 4.25 Arms Act.”

T

The MNS has been most active: Maharashtrians

Vikram Chavan

he Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) have been most active at grass-root levels feel most of Mumbai South’s Maharashtrians. “Instead of the Shiv Sena, this time around, MNS has been very active among slums and within the by-lanes of South Mumbai,” says chemical engineer Vikram Chavan. “The mood among the local Maharashtrians is definitely in favour of MNS candidate Bala Nandgaonkar. The Shiv Sena has only been organising festivals as opposed to the MNS which has been working endlessly for the common man,” he says. The MNS has been working tirelessly particularly in the slums of South Mumbai where their major vote-banks reside. Right from Ganesh Murti Nagar to Ambedkar Nagar and Gita Nagar, MNS workers have been seen as “very active” by Maharashtrians as they worked shoulder to shoulder with Shiv Sena karyakartas. But then, that’s the sentiment of the local slum-dweller Maharashtrian who is known to shift loyalties at the drop of a hat. Mumbai South, like most slum-ridden zones, is known for a voter-base which sways wildly in favour of considerations and rather shamelessly too. Ideology will hardly play part in moulding the sentiments of the homeless poor for who all that matters is the moolah. “Sadly, the locals feel that Sena has lost its edge of late,” feels Chavan. “And, the MNS has concurrently grown in strength as a viable alternative.”

“W

The Congress has let us down: North Indians

hen earlier the Shiv Sena, and later, MNS got violent with the North Indians, the Congress simply maintained a stoic silence,” rues political activist Suresh Kanaujia. “Despite all tall talk of justice being doled out, the Courts let the perpetrators free within hours of being arrested too,” he adds. “The North Indians are fed up of the Congress Suresh Kanaujia which is known for its double talk. They will vote for anyone other than the Congress,” he says. The North Indian population in South Mumbai which comprises dhobis, workers and the lower middle class has been targeted again and again by the Shiv Sena and, more recently, the MNS. Memories of a ‘Bhaiyya bashing’ are fresh in the minds of the North Indian who may just look to get even these polls. Remember the pani puri video incident following which scores of North Indians were roughed up by MNS activists across the city. Bhelpuri vendors went off the streets for quite a while then. Besides the floating North Indian population which arrives to the city in search of jobs and does not vote, there are thousands of North Indians who live in South Mumbai to supply milk, newspapers, ply taxis and work as labourers even in Sassoon Docks who feel slighted towards the Congress for their attitude toward the group each time they’re attacked.

he Kutchchis in South Mumbai have grown from being a predominantly business community to self-employed professionals with some even working in business houses and there are simmering of new-age sentiments and political leanings. Like Garment business owner Rajesh Gala says, “With Kutchchis, Rajesh Gala there’s a definite shift in political favourites. The educated professional Kutchchi feels that Aam Aadmi Party’s Meera Sanyal could make the difference while the traditional could opt for Shiv Sena due to the Modi influence and that the gathbandhan could ultimately benefit the BJP government at the Centre.” But, a lot of Kutchchis in Mumbai South zone, particularly in Girgaum, Kalbadevi, Fort and Colaba feel that considering the Modi wave, it makes sense to vote for Arvind Sawant of the Shiv Sena. The traditionally anti-Sena vote-bank may well spring a surprise and vote for Shiv Sena only to ensure that BJP grab a majority in the city. After all, BJP is their first preference. There are views too that a few Kutchchis could play safe and opt for a Congress repeat in the zone just to eliminate all chance of a violence associated with Shiv Sena or, for that matter, MNS.

For the sake of BJP, it will be Sena here: Sindhis

Tarun Chandiramani

T

This time, it could well be Sena: Kutchchis

“It’s about time the Congress is driven out from here. To drive them out of the nation, let’s start with our constituency,” suggests investment consultant Tarun Chandiramani. “Sadly, this seat has gone to Shiv Sena. If it were a BJP seat, it would be a runaway win for the candidate,” he says. “The Sindhis, as a community, have always opted for the BJP. That said, the emergence of Aam Aadmi Party has created a distinct stir among the educated classes that include Sindhis,” he adds. However, Meera Sanyal of the Aam Aadmi Party hasn’t been active at all in the area, feels Tarun Chandiramani who says, “I have yet to see her or hear of her in print unlike the other candidates who have been so active. She hasn’t learned her lesson it seems. Last time around, she lost her deposit as an independent candidate and may well register a similar result this year around too,” he adds. The Sindhis are likely to vote for their favourite party…the BJP and in the present scenario where the party’s alliance partner is fighting the polls, there’s every chance of them voting for the Shiv Sena candidate Arvind Sawant. Congress, for them, is just not a choice as usual.

COULD GO TO…

03

MUMBAI SOUTH CONSTITUENCY

Traditional Congress sympathisers these: Christians

Joseph D’Souza

Without Congress, the Christian voter would be simply…lost. The Shiv Sena, MNS or BJP are simply non-options for South Mumbai’s Christian who has traditionally been a Congress supporter. “There is no other option either,” says realty consultant Joseph D’Souza. “If there was a viable option, the Christians would even consider shifting loyalties. But then, is there any other option for the Christian but for Congress. BJP with its alleys seems acutely polarised,” says Joseph. So, for this community it will be Milind yet a few members could opt for Aam Aadmi Party’s Meera Sanyal simply to display allegiance to Arvind Kejriwal and the party’s ideology. If Aam Aadmi Party has made any inroads in South Mumbai, it’s among the educated Christian who may shift loyalties to the party despite their misgivings towards its ‘hardly-visible’ candidate. But then, where the Christian masses are concerned, it’ll be a safer Congress once again. “After all Milind has served the constituency for two terms already, hasn’t he?” sums up Joseph.

M

Community card will work for Congress: Rajasthanis

ilind Deora being a Rajasthani, most of the Rajasthani votes will go to the sitting MP and third-time aspirant. Chemist Vinod Mehta feels that the community card will definitely help Milind Deora come to power once again. “All Rajasthanis have been devout Deora supporters and will once again, bring him to power,” he says. “Where the Shiv Sena and MNS are concerned, the Rajasthanis being Vinod Mehta predominantly traders have always been sceptical and will surely not extend any support,” adds Mehta. The Marwari voter is a hard-core Congress supporter and will continue to be so. That Milind Deora represents the Congress will only work in his favour as he happens to be a Rajasthani too. The members of the Rajasthani community being mostly traders, small shop owners and businessmen don’t conform to the Sena or MNS ideology and will surely not vote for either Bala Nandgaonkar or Arvind Sawant in these polls. The self-employed Rajasthani, the next-door chaiwala, may be a staunch Modi supporter owing to the overwhelming influence back at home will make any difference. He can’t vote in Mumbai!

S

Youth tend to gravitate towards MNS: Kolis

Nikhil Koli

oftware tester Nikhil Koli says, “Most Kolis, original inhabitants of Mumbai, seem to be quite impressed with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and its style of functioning.” Traditionally Congress supporters, the Kolis are heavily influenced by the MNS in South Mumbai which has worked tirelessly in the slum pockets. At Machchimar Nagar and in Koliwada, MNS has made its presence felt in a huge way. The Koli youth are particularly in favour of Raj Thackeray and his line of thinking, feels Nikhil. So, it won’t be a surprise to see Kolis deprive a chunk of voting from their traditional ally – the Congress. With all the talk of corruption at the national level and the emergence of the AAP, the Congress has taken a bashing. The next best bet is MNS with who the Kolis can easily relate.

The Gujarati trader is predictably pro-BJP while the Christian is predominantly known to favour Congress. The Maharashtrian feels his interests are best served by the Shiv Sena or MNS. Gajanan Khergamker analyses the poll mood among communities in Mumbai South

It’s BJP all the way here: Jains

“The Jains are bound to opt for the Bharatiya Janata Party and, in its absence, go for Shiv Sena simply to help strengthen the reach of the BJP,” says jewellery shop owner Lalit Jain. The Jains are known to be strong BJP supporters and don’t get swayed by the candidate’s credentials or antecedents. As a rule, the lot, much like Christians, have their priorities all set and refuse to budge. Despite a bit of friction with Lalit Jain the local Shiv Sena and their elements, the Jains are likely to vote for Shiv Sena’s Arvind Sawant simply to ensure Congress does not return to power here. The Jain vote is more or less fixed. They will surely vote for the BJP and nothing else. Whether their affinity for BJP spills over to the Shiv Sena or not, is the question here. If that happens, it’ll be Arvind Sawant. And, there’s a substantial number of Marwaris in Mumbai South, enough to take a chunk away from the sitting MP’s pie.

Congress is the only choice left: Muslims

Contrary to what most feel, the Aam Aadmi Party has created few inroads where Muslim voters are concerned. At least, not in South Mumbai where Muslims may well continue to support the Congress. “Yahan pe, har baar hi toh Congress aati hai. Aur is baar phir Congress hi ayegi,” says restaurant manager Yaseen Chowdhury. The Muslim vote could never go for Shiv Sena or MNS and the Aam Aadmi Party wave appears to have made Yaseen Chowdhury no difference to the Muslims who will probably stick to their known-enemy Congress. Despite the Shiv Sena and MNS having shed the anti-Muslim veneer for years now, the Muslims are yet to cozy up to the two and vote them to power. Having been at the receiving end of their communal violence and associating them with BJP itself is reason enough for the community’s members to vote for anyone other than them.

Keen on a change at the Centre: Shettys

Keen on seeing a change at the Centre, the Shettys mostly educated and upwardly mobile will opt for the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Narendra Modi. “In keeping with their desire to support Modi, the local Shetty will most likely vote for the Shiv Sena here…which is in an alliance with the BJP in the state,” says Hotelier Sachin Shetty. The hotelier community is another business community which will Sachin Shetty prefer to see a business-friendly Modi at the helm of affairs. The Congress is perceived as a scam-ridden party and one that has triggered huge taxes and expenses on the tax payer. The BJP, on the other hand, is perceived as a party which will ensure that the middle class isn’t burdened any further and traders flourish. “Look at Gujarat,” says Sachin, “Who wouldn’t want Mumbai to grow like that?” The AAP influence may not be strong enough to change things yet!

05 MUMBAI NORTH-CENTRAL In North-Central, Priya Dutt realises it will not be a cakewalk

MUMBAI | MONDAY, APRIL 7, 2014

By Mrinalini Khattar

esterday morning, by 11 am, it was a packed hall that greeted the candidates of the North Central constituency at the Apostolic Carmel School Hall in Bandra. They were there to attend the panel discussion and meet their candidates at the event organized by the H-West Ward Federation and hosted by AGNI, a non- profit organization that has been working for good governance for the past two decades in Mumbai. The discussion saw North Central Constituency candidates Poonam Mahajan from the BJP, Phiroze Palkivala from AAP, Farhan Azmi from the Samajwadi Party and

current MP Priya Dutt who had first been elected to represent the North West Constituency in 2005. Sanjay Sharma, who is an independent candidate, was also present during the discussion. The crowd was mostly made up of Bandra residents, with senior citizens outnumbering others. Many were seen sporting the ‘Aam Admi’ cap with pride. The candidates were introduced and invited on stage by AGNI activist Shyama Kulkarni who also acted as the moderator throughout. Each candidate was asked to speak about their vision for three minutes which was to be followed by a question answer round. Phiroze Palkivala seemed calm and composed. He was also the

wice-elected sitting Congress MP Priya Dutt presented a picture of calm composure at the 'Meet your Candidate' organised by the H-West Ward Federation at the Apostolic Carmel School in Bandra yesterday. She answered most questions with patience and courtesy, her attention never seeming to flag even when they seemed strangely off the mark. For instance, some of the issues centered around defense and national security. “There are issues in defense that we are looking into. We are providing the best equipment to fight insurgencies. The money allocated to defense is high and we have to ensure its correct use and implementation of policies,” said Dutt when asked about loopholes in the defense ministry, in the aftermath to the terrorist attack on Mumbai. “There have been faults, there have been gaps, but we need to rectify them and fill gaps, she said. "After

Priya Dutt, Congress 26/11, an NSG battalion with 241 black cat commandos has been set up, she added. Nobody thought it necessary to follow up this declaration on exactly what the "black cats", had been doing till now.” Dutt addressed all the questions, but did lose her cool once or twice. She agreed fully with the audience when they pointed out that Mumbai needed a separate independent board for surburban railways. But she

only candidate who was met with unwavering applause at the end of his speech. He spoke about how all the problems currently stemmed from corruption. This, according to him was the number one problem that his party had been uniquely positioned to address. “I want this city to indulge in enterprise but not through crony capitalism”, he added. In the question answer round, the issue of the Defense budget was taken up first. Each candidate was required to answer the question with a reasoned argument and a possible solution. Mahajan first hesitantly spoke about the GDP, and then swiftly changed her solution to ‘suraksha aur shiksha’. Dutt said

said, “Our first priority is to reach out to the remotest areas. However, I am trying my best for an improved railway network in Mumbai.” “It is the UPA government that brought in Lokpal. We never said no to the plan. We have many pending bills and I’ll ensure that they get passed for the welfare of our country,” said Dutt, on it being pointed out that the trust of citizens, lost in the last decade because of the Congress Party's poor track record of performance. She further elaborated, “ It is our government that brought you RTI because of which the various scams came out. If we were sitting scared, then we would have never allowed that bill to be passed.” She concluded by saying, “We need to bring a change for which we need a corruption free India.” The inference was obvious. Whether the public took the best is still to be seen.

he AAP candidate against Priya Dutt and Poonam Mahajan, is the son of the late and enormously respected jurist, Nani Palkhivala. A complete newcomer to politics, yet he looked absolutely prepared to answer all kind of questions. Wearing the signature at the ‘Meet your candidate’ event yesterday, he looked the most simple and confident as he answered each question with care. “The amount of corruption that exists in our Army is beyond imagination. The defence services of the country are at stake. If large amounts of funds are allocated to it, then then there must be implementation of

function here,” said Palkhivala when asked about setting up a separate board for suburban railways. Palkhivala kept his calm through the entire course of the event. “Good Governance starts with an efficient government and political will to do things. The ADC gave us 'the best' cartoon-commentary on the Raj-Uddhav spat on Saturday. But let us not desensitize the word corruption. Phiroze Palkhivala, AAP The party needs to ensure that funds are put to use plans for its use,” he said where they really need to while talking about the be,” he said, on the issue of problems being faced on the increasing problem of transdefense front. portation in the city. “I am all for a separate “Our party is all for cleanbody for the Railways that liness. that bringing out issues of defence also risks the security of the country and makes it vulnerable. Palkivala, seemingly agitated by the first two responses, said that he had travelled across the country by himself and noted that the extent of corruption that exists in that army was beyond anybody’s imagination. Azmi chimed in that corruption was the main issue and went on to talk about police reforms but was swiftly brought back on track by Kulkarni. In fact he was chided more than once by her whenever he meandered from the pressing question. Meanwhile, Sanjay Sharma said, “We need to have accountability mechanisms in place. It is the only way to empower the ministry.

Choosing the right ministers is in your hands and for that you need to understand that choosing a party alone is not the solution.” Other issues addressed were related to infrastructure, railways, economy, and safety for women and rape victims. On the whole the people seemed to be in fair opposition to the current party, but did not cheer for BJP’s Mahajan either, who, Dutt admits, she sees as her greatest competition. Palkivala was received well by the assembly while Azmi and Sharma failed to impress as they could only offer impressive statistics marking failures in the administration but no workable solutions for problems.

arhan Azmi, hotelier and Lok sabha candidate representing Samajwadi Party from North Central Mumbai said, "We need more judges. And those who think judges are not corrupt, please meet me afterwards and I'll give you names,” when asked about judicial reforms at the Apostolic Carmel School, Hill road, where H-West organised the ‘Meet your candidate’ event. Azmi spoke highly of his party president Mulayam Singh Yadav and appreciated his outlook towards civic issues. However, the audience didn’t respond positively to his praise. and all he received was a negative reaction with their hands waving in disagreement accompanied with booing. At several instances, he was re-

Farhan Azmi, Samajwadi Party proved by the emcee for digressing from the point and not adhering to the context of the questioning. He was finding it very hard to stick

to talk about ‘what their party plans to do’’ and kept veering off into ‘what other parties haven't’ as suggested by the NGO Agni. He criticized sitting Congress MP Priya Dutt on multiple occasions, accusing her of belonging to a party which is "the very definition of corruption". “I accuse the UPA of using and abusing the railway ministry to lure their alliance partners. The Railways are so mismanaged and I would like to ask Miss. Dutt, how many times has she travelled by the railways? We have to free the railways from the clutches of the UPA.” Towards the end of the event, the emcee suggested that all restaurants should offer a 15% discount to all those who vote on April 24. To which, Azmi said, “My restaurants definitely will. I am declaring it already.”

‘Focus on the small areas first’

n the 2009 election, the BJP’s Poonam Mahajan got less than half the votes Priya Dutt managed to garner. This time, the latter says the former is her only rival! A late arrival, she just made it in time to give her three minute vision speech. She began by making a jibe at her “arch enemy” cum chummy pal in the melee. Seen by most people as merely the inheritor of the fading legacy l;eft by her late father, party money man Pramod Mahajan, dhe said, “The financial capital of this country has been neglected by the UPA government. Six MPs have been elected by the Congress but they have not been representing their city centric issues.” During the question-answer round she was asked why her party had not yet re-

Poonam Mahajan, BJP leased its manifesto. “We are apologetic about the manifesto not being released yet. We are taking time because we don’t want to make false promises in a rush,” she said smoothly. Mahajan also asserted

that the issues in the city should be more area-centric. “Mumbai is not growing horizontally, its growing vertically. So we need to focus on small areas and have separate agendas and amendments for the city. Most importantly we need investment for infrastructure and I will help bring that.” she said. Talking about infrastructure, she gave the examples of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh and was immediately faced with disapproval from the public. Someone from the audience shouted, “Explain Amit Shah’s statement” and the topic was changed quickly. Shah, who is a close aide of Narendra Modi , had previously made a public statement saying that the general election was a chance for Modi to seek “revenge for the insult” during the Muzaffarnagar riots last year in Uttar Pradesh.

SIMHASAN Prashant Hamine | ADC has fielded candidates only against the Sena candidates is not lost out on the latter. Any patch up between the two estranged cousins at this moment looks remote and will depend on the Lok Sabha election results and how the electoral picture pans out for the Assembly elections that ensue later. And if senior Sena leader Manohar Joshi is to be believed the main problem in Raj & Uddhav reunion is their Ego.

and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray have indulged in off late. The tragedy is that they are washing their family linen out in the public, that too in a poll season. And the cadres from both the sides have not liked it one bit. It prompted a die-hard Sainik to remark “thank God Balasaheb you are not alive to see what is

for him to call. With Raj responding who drove you to the hospital. But it was his remark that the late Sena chief was being fed with oily Batatawada and it was he who upon inquiry from the late Sena patriarch started sending him home cooked chicken soup, was bit too tasteless for the two to have indulged in that too in public.

The NCP leadership is not so much upbeat about retaining power in Delhi, as much as it is in Maharashtra. There simple argument is that as long as the two cousins fight with each other and ensure division of their vote bank, they are confident of winning the Assembly for a record fourth term. Moreover, the fact that the MNS

Milind Deora bate forum held in Mumbai today. The same was organised by V Citizens Action Network (VCAN) at CP Tank in South Mumbai. The platform also saw the presence of other competing candidates from the constituency including the likes of Bala Nandgaokar on behalf of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, the Shiv Sena and BJP al-

liance representative, Arvind Sawant and Meera Sanyal representing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). In his opening remarks, Deora said, “The primary responsibility of the Member of Parliament is to legislate and raise your voice for the people of your constituency over vested interests. I am proud that in the last 10 years, I’ve always spoken for my people and their needs. It’s an honour to represent the people of South Mumbai constituency who have rendered their continued support to me and my initiatives in the last decade. It is overwhelming to see that in 2004, we saw only 6.5 lakh voters in the constituency and today we have over 15 lakh voters, I urge you all to vote this election”. Milind’s greatest reward for his years in government has been affecting significant, long-term change through acts and initiatives such as the telecom tower radiation policy, the Bhendi Bazar cluster development project, propagation for the Eastern Freeway project and the second phase of the Rs.80-crore Marine Drive makeover project. He also introduced the lighthouse

tourism policy and pushed the state's decision to set up a housing regulator and supported traders against the implementation of Local Body Tax (LBT). Talking about corruption, Milind raised the need to make governments smaller

putting Dr Vijaykumar Gavit in the dock seems to have ignored the fact that it was forced to change its Shirdi (SC) Lok Sabha candidate Babanrao Gholap who was charged in a disproportionate assets case. The BJP these days seems to be perplexed. It has tried to keep the MNS in good humour and now is crying foul as it is trying to use its Modi plank to confuse the voters. Now it is crying foul that even NCP candidate and union minister Praful Patel is using Modi in his campaign material. The Election Commission of India too is at its wits end not knowing what to do with political parties hijacking each others agenda like this. For the BJP it was a double egged sword to have toyed with the MNS at the risk of annoying the Sena. It now runs the risk of confusing its own vote bank, ending up in splitting it and making it counter-productive for its own sake in the end. Already

Sharad Pawar the bad blood between the two cousins and its impact on the elections is not known as yet. The follies of the Sena and overconfidence of the BJP could well spoil their own party. Add to that NCP chief Sharad Pawar with his constant flip-flops is only muddying the waters further.

Former Congress corporator jumps into poll arena, files as Independent

By Suresh Golani

though the NCP and Congress manage to strike a prepoll alliance in the Parliamentary and Assembly elections, both the parties have been at loggerheads during the local municipal elections. “The local NCP leadership has always backstabbed us in every issue concerning the civic administration, be it the Mayoral chair or any another election, they (NCP) have a record of ditching their traditional ally opting to stand by our saffron opponents. What is the point in campaigning for them?” alleged a former Congress corporator.

T

wo days after 11 former Congress corporators from the Mira-Bhayandar region tendered their resignations from the party in protest over the candidature of NCP’s Dr. Sanjeev Naik, the NCP was left bewildered yet again on Saturday after senior Congress leader from Mira Road - Advocate S.A. Khan filed his nomination papers as an independent from the Thane parliamentary segment. The act of revolt by the Congress leaders against their alliance partner gains significance as Khan is considered to be a close aide of MLC and local Congress Dr. Sanjeev Naik, NCP Denying any ploy by the local supremo Muzaffar Hussain, who wields a tremendous cially in the Muslim-domi- Congress leadership against clout in the twin-city espe- nated areas of Mira Road. president Leo Collasso said, “We religiously stand by the alliance dharma. All the leaders and party workers are working hard to ensure that MP Dr. Sanjeev Naik emerges victorious again and this time by a higher margin as compared to the 2009 figures”. Political observers believe that if Khan goes ahead with his candidature, NCP’s Dr. Naik may face a possible dent in his Muslim voter base, especially from Naya Nagar and other parts of Mira Road where the Congress party has a significant presence. However, senior NCP leaders have termed the move as a stunt by a section of Congress leaders to embarrass the party and a desperate attempt to display their nuisance value.

NCP criticises Congress’ need to woo religious leaders By A Special Correspondent day saying that the nation is

T

he NCP is in no mood to relent. Though an ally, it has once again taken a dig at the Congress, this time for wooing religious leaders. A day after the Congress received clear support from the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said, “I am surprised that political parties feel they can benefit in terms of votes by approaching religious leaders. At the same time, religious leaders feel they can benefit by announcing their support. But this time, it is not true either way. I think political parties should distance themselves from such people.” Syed Ahmed Bukhari, a prominent Muslim religious leader, declared his support to the Congress last Thurs-

in danger from communal forces and hence we should ensure that secular votes are not divided. Earlier this week, Congress president Sonia Gandhi met with the Imam and asked him to ensure that the Muslim minority would vote for the Congress. However, the NCP views the situation differently. Mallik said, “Presently Bukhari has hardly any influence on the Muslim people. The Imam has a history of switching allegiances and therefore cannot be taken seriously.” During the 2004 general elections, the Imam had endorsed the BJP, while in the next general elections in 2009, the Imam emphatically and openly backed the Congress.

Over 850 persons deposit firearms in Thane district By A Staff Reporter

M

ore than 850 persons deposited their licensed firearms with the Thane police after instructions from the Election Commission (EC) due to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, police sources told PTI on Sunday. Sources informed that some of them have been exempted by the police. Interestingly, about 60 per cent license holders are political leaders of various political parties, while some of them are political office bearers of different rankings. Similarly, the Thane rural police too issued notices and accordingly 930 have surrendered their weapons to the respective police stations. "Weapons have been de-

posited so that they cannot use it during elections to influence, bully or threaten voters. It also acts as a preventive measure to maintain law and order and free and fair elections," a police official said. A senior police official said that if anyone failed to deposit arms within the specified period, they shall be liable for prosecution under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code. Prior to elections, a high level arms scrutiny committee was formed at the commissionerate level in which the licensed arms holders were given notices to deposit their weapons. A receipt of depositing given to the holder and after the elections the arms are returned to the person.

CSF writes to BJP on community related issues

Seeks equal status for Dalit Christians and Muslims on par with scheduled castes of Sikh, Hindu and Buddhist faiths By A Staff Reporter

W

ith just days remaining for the Lok Sabha elections, the Catholic Secular Forum (CSF) – the community’s activist NGO, while calling upon Christians in India to vote for secular parties in the forthcoming general elec-

tions released an open letter to the BJP, Modi and Rajnath Singh for their reaction on concerns related to Christians. The CSF General Secretary Joseph Dias has, in the letter, asked Modi and Singh to let the nation know its stand on certain community related issues, on the basis of which Christians in particular and minorities in general could decide on voting for the party and the NDA coalition. According to the letter, Joseph Dias sought clarifications on issues like the implementation of the recommendations of the Mishra Commission, espe-

cially with respect to benefits to Dalit Christians and Muslims, on par with the scheduled castes of Sikh, Hindu and Buddhist faiths. “Such provisions have been denied to these minority communities since 1950 and decades have lapsed with discrimination continuing. Enactment of a national anti-conversion or blasphemy law, as exists in many BJP-ruled states, curbs freedom of religion as guaranteed by the Constitution. A number of false cases are foisted on pastors and Christians for forced conversions, which is an oxymoron in itself. What attempts would be

made to keep extra-constitutional forces like the RSS, VHP, Bajrang Dal, etc. at bay and moral policing satraps, like Muthalik’s Ram Sena from enforcing their hidden agenda. There is also eminent danger of saffronisation of various sectors like police, education, bureaucracy, judiciary, armed forces, etc. as has been observed from those joining the BJP in the run-up to the polls,” the letter stated. It further added, “Monitoring and providing for quick relief for victims of the Odisha, especially Kandhamal riots, in which hundreds of Christians were

targeted, women raped and no justice or relief provided, in spite of many years. Similar is the case of anti-Sikh riots and anti-Muslim riots in Gujarat, where Hindu victims have received better and quicker compensation. Enactment of the Communal Violence Bill and an Act for the Equal Opportunities Commission, with amendments to the Foreign Contribution Act and rules related to allotting Visas to Christian missionaries and providing citizenship those foreign missionaries, who are in the country for decades and wish to die in India, where they serve.”

Speaking to the ADC. Joseph Dias said, “There is a need for the constitution of a Sachar Committee-like panel for Christians or a Desk for Christian Affairs, to study and deal with the problems of economic deprivation. There is also an urgent need to enhance the minimum outlay for the PM’s 15 Point Minorities Progammes and other government allocations to be minimum 19 per cent, which is the proportion of minorities to the majority in the country. There is also need to make the village or ward as the unit of planning to ensure development percolates to the lower levels.”

leuths of the Thane (rural) police, with the help of local residents, managed to apprehend six armed men who turned out to be members of a notorious Nepali gang of dacoits from the Hetkar Alley area of Vasai (West) late on Saturday night. According to the police, four members of the gang were trying to sneak into Shryeas Apartment when local youngsters, who found their moments suspicious, confronted them inside the building compound. For the fear of being caught, the quartet whipped out a revolver. However, the youngsters put up a brave front and managed to overpower two of them, meanwhile residents of the building called up the police who immediately reached the spot and managed to apprehend four other miscreants. The accused who are of Nepali origin have been identified as Dinesh Lacharam Thakur (24), Suraj Ganesh Thapa (20), Padam Lalbahadur Thapa (20), Kamal Singh Nepali (19), Vijay Singh Paramsingh Thapa (25) and Jordalai Balram Thapa (25). ook out for a lady who had either lost her baby during pregnancy or found that she could not conceive in future. This is the profile put out by the Mumbai Crime Branch of the suspect in the mysterious disappearance of an infant in Wadia Hospital two years ago. It was October 24, 2012. Dussehra. Jasmine Naik who was admitted to the postpartum ward with her dayold son took a small walk within the ward. When she returned to her place, she found her baby missing. A case was registered at the Bhoiwada Police Station. But two years later, the city police have been unsuccessful in solving it.

According to a top brass crime branch official, the suspected woman was definitely aware of the Wadia Hospital topography. It is suspected that she had prior knowledge of the different wards and the purpose each one is used for. The hospital has a prepregnancy ward, pregnancy ward, post-partum ward among others. The day the baby went missing, i.e. Dussehra, the OPD was closed. The police suspect that the woman not only had knowledge of the different wards, but also of Naik's delivery schedule. Naik was admitted to the hospital on October 21, 2013. Three days later, the unfortunate incident took

place. The day Naik delivered the baby, she was admitted to the post-partum ward of the hospital. The Mumbai Crime Branch questioned several people working in the hospital as well as patients and their relatives. People's statements which have already been recorded by the police are being verified and if need be, the crime branch will re-record the statements. Devidas Naik, father of the missing child, had announced a Rs.5 lakh award to whoever helped them get their son back and pasted posters of their boy at various areas in the city such as railway stations, bus stops and hospitals.

Congress: When all else fails, chant secularism mantra

Ponder awhile... “Enemies make you stronger, allies make you weaker.” — Frank Herbert

Why is PM not in poll fray? P

RIME Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is involved in more cases of corruption than any other UPA leader. During the last ten years of UPA rule, he could have stopped many scams but he did not because he was involved in various compulsions. For instance, he knew about the 2G scam of A. Raja but he turned a blind eye to the ally in the UPA. DMK's Karunanidhi had threatened to withdraw support if any was taken against Raja and the enquiry against the scam stopped. The Congress leaders conveniently put the case before Manmohan Singh and there was no charge. By his inaction however Manmohan Singh had got the coalition to survive. In all other scam cases charges of corruption pointed to the involvement of the prime minister. The Congress leaders have taken care to ensure that poll campaigns are not done those who are involved in scams. Maybe that is why Manmohan Singh has been kept away. He has not addressed a single poll rally and he has not made poll speeches. He has been of course sidelined and obviously told he does not have any chance to become prime minister again. Another leader who would have taken grater part in the Lok Sabha elections is Priyanka, daughter of Sonia Gandhi. There was a time before her marriage when she showed leadership qualities. Does the Congress fear that her relations with a man against whom there was an allegation in land scam might damage the chances of a candidate – if she participated in poll campaigns? The strategy of the Congress has helped to some extent but the allegations fly as thick as ever. Keeping out Prime Minister Manmohan Singh may not help in eliminating corrupt charges. Prime Minister Manomhan Singh has done his best to stay out of the limelight and personally himself has ensured its survival more than once, but finally it has not helped the party from acquiring a deep corruption taint.

OW times have changed! Even the clarion call for saving secularism no longer inspires the defenders of the faith to rally around the Congress standard? Sonia Gandhi’s appeal to the so-called secular forces to try and stop Narendra Modi drew a blank. Even the Communists, who normally behave as if they alone have the monopoly on this undefined and undefinable commodity, ignored it with disdain. The secularist warriors from UP, Mulayam and Maya, too did not seem to be interested. Rebuffed, it was left to A.K. Antony to try and make out as if the stumbling block in forging a so-called secularist block was its leadership. He gratuitously announced that the leadership of any such secular formation was non-negotiable, though the truth was that overnight the Congress had become the new untouchable, with no one, just no one, ready to hitch its wagon behind its frayed flag. Sonia Gandhi’s appeal not to split the secular vote was a clear acknowledgement that the Congress duly sensed the coming rout. It was a desperate attempt to try and salvage whatever it could by roping in the other groups which for their own reasons might be arrayed against the BJP. But make no mistake, the objective was not to save secularism, but to save the Congress. As always, secularism was being used most opportunistically. Having abused secularism for so long the concept was now denuded of its original meaning. It was reduced to a mere slogan, to be chanted whenever the party found its political fortunes down in the dumps. Since desperate situations call for desperate measures, the Congress did not abandon its secular project at the first rejection. If other parties were not interested, so be it. The Congress would try and mobilize the secular forces on its own. Sonia Gandhi’s first port of call was the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, that covenanted ambassador of the Congress brand of secularism, ready to do business at election-time with the highest bidder. That the Imam’s writ did not run beyond the immediate confines of the historic mosque was of little concern. When you feel lost even fully blunted tools inspire hope. The instrumentality of secularism was sought to be used under the aegis of the Shahi Imam to avert a certain disaster. Come to think it, the Congress was insulting the Muslims. The belief that assorted Imams and Mullahs could be hired as thekedars to deliver the Muslim vote revealed a poor opinion of the collective intelligence of the entire community. It is surprising that the Muslim intellectuals did not protest the audacity of the Congress leadership. Hon-

ourable exceptions aside, the few Muslim public intellectuals that there are they too seem to have sold their souls to those who practice the self-serving secularist politics. But sixty years of fake secularism have made the Indian Muslim wiser. No longer is he ready to be fobbed off by pious sentiments without any evidence of socioeconomic welfare on the ground. He has seen through the Congress ploy. Fear and threats of the BJP are not enough for him to blindly vote for the Congress. Maybe five years of relative calm on the Opposition benches would inspire a re-think in the Congress on its approach to secularism. It is not a vote-gathering device. It ought to be an article of faith, a

low, investment and savings rates below par, and, above all, consumer price inflation still dangerously hovering near double digit figures? Yes, the Sensex is at a record high, but that may be because markets are already celebrating the certain exit of the UPA after the polls The next government would have a tough time undoing the economic havoc wrought by the UPA. Indeed, if the economy was really doing very well, Chidambaram would not have shied away from the electoral battle, and, instead, sought the mandate of the people on his record as Finance Minister. Only the Harvard-educated akhbari leader would have the temerity to dub serious questions about his performance raised by Yashwant Sinha as ‘puerile.’ By the way, if it was wrong to claim that Modi had been given a clean chit by the SIT in the 2002 Gujarat riots since the same was challenged in a higher court, it would be wrong too to describe Chidambaram as a legally elected member of the 15th Lok Sabha since his election too stands challenged for alleged malpractices. Chidambaram was again on weak ground on the creation of jobs. As per the National Sample Survey Office, between 1999-2000 and 2004-05, the six years of the Vajpayee Government, 58 million new jobs were created. In the ten years of UPA, only 15 million jobs were created. Superciliousness does not make a politician great, even if he boasts of a Harvard degree.

OMING from a scam-ridden government this must be an extraordinary claim. “Business is quite comfortable with Dr Manmohan Singh and UPA finance ministers, but there are sections of business which are extremely comfortable with Narendra Modi because his brand of capitalism is crony capitalism…” P. Chidambaram fails to see the contradiction in his statement. A government which went out of its way to bestow extraordinary favours on its favourite businessmen — what else were all those scams about, after all? — has the gumption to accuse a mere chief minister of practising crony capitalism. It is a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black. Even by the limited ambit of his powers, a chief minister is constrained from favouring businessmen the way only a central government can. Besides, if businessmen were happy with the UPA Government, why is the economy in such dire straits, the growth rate sub-five percent, manufacturing at a record

The rapists should be executed without delay THE verdict of the Mumbai sessions court to give death sentence to three rapists for their repeated offence committed on telephone operator and the photojournalist in the form of gang-rape is in right direction and timely one. In this case the repeated offence of heinous crime by the rapists have made the case as 'rarest of rare cases' and exactly fit for the capital punishment by the court to give justice to the victim. I strongly feel that since the verdict of the sessions court can be challenged by the three convicted rapists in the Bombay High Court or further, the matter must be upheld by the courts in the shortest period of time to enable the convicted rapists to face the gallows rather than dragging the issue for a long time. It is hoped that the higher courts will reject the appeal of the three convicted rapists and confirm the death sentence on

THE trial court hearing of the gang rape cases has found three convicts guilty as repeat sexual offenders under the newly enacted section 376(e) of the Indian Penal Code, paving the way for the prosecution to seek the death penalty in the photojournalist's case. It is the right step in the right direction to hand death penalty for repeat offenders as in Shakti Mills case. Mumbai stood first in rape cases in recent times. Where's BJP manifesto?

THE law stipulates death penalty for a repeated rape offence. Hence, the material consideration before the Court for awarding the death penalty is simply confirmation that the person involved is a repeat offender, irrespective of when his conviction took place for either or both offences. Squabbling over the sequence of inconsequential events will defeat the very purpose of this much-required stringent legislation. Technicalities must ever remain subservient to intent. — Phiroze B. This argument looks good but only on face value. The reason for this unique situation (of not having a manifesto before the election) may well be because of serious differences among the BJP itself. How can the party justify the delay when it was the first to leave the block in the run up to elections 2014. Didn't it show its over eagerness to announce its prime ministerial candidate almost six months before the dates were announced. They are perceived to be the party with the clearest vision? Rahul too weak to lead IT is reported that the Congress workers are disenchanted and disheartened with the 'lukewarm' response from the public to Rahul Gandhi to his very presence and wherever he addresses a meeting and had no other alternative than to call Sonia Gandhi to take over and head the campaign to prevent the imminent disaster. It is given to understand that the Congress workers know for sure that there is no way that Congress could even dream of winning but are scared that with Rahul Gandhi at the helm the Congress would lose even 'deposits' and become really 'secular' and Sonia Gandhi might stem such a 'rot' even though she can never propel Congress anywhere near a win notwithstanding any amount of support mainly from the likes of AAP, SP, BSP and of course the DMK. The popularity for Modi all over India based on his proven ability and the efforts he has taken to develop Gujarat has shaken the Congress and its allies, in particular, Priyanka, Robert Vadra and Chidambaram. The only person who cares two hoots for the Election results seems to be Manmohan Singh as he has nothing to lose. — T.M. Uday Shankar, Mumbai

Slapping Arvind Kejriwal not justified THE attack on Arvind Kejriwal in Delhi is unfortunate and must be condemned by one and all as elections are about votes and not for settling personal differences. The public of Delhi it seems are frustrated with the AAP party as they had bestowed all their faith on Kejriwal but are angry with him for backstabbing them as he ran away from responsibility by resigning as Delhi CM on silly grounds. Kejriwal is trying to be a Gandhi but without Gandhian values. Kejriwal has played with the sentiments of the people of this country. Corruption, malpractices and governance has become side issues and Kejriwal is today only interested in publicity and power. Nobody is questioning his honesty but values are being dropped in a bid to become popular. Even his mentor Anna Hazare has distanced himself from him for these very reasons as Kejriwal is now acting as a politician and not a 'Aam Aadmi' which people had associated him with. lmost three days after a 22 year-old youth was hit by a police van driven by a constable attached to the Nagpada motor vehicle department, he has been declared dead during treatment in Sion Hospital, on Saturday. However, his family members have refused to claim the body till the constable is charged with murder. On Wednesday evening, deceased Umesh Dakua, along with his friend Rahul Vinayakar (21) was going towards Ghatkopar when a police van dashed their bike near Chunabhatti and they fell to the ground, but constable Nilesh Kinjalkar who was driving the van fled after the incident. A RTO official on duty near the spot, nabbed the fleeing constable and handed him over to the Chunabhatti police station. The constable works as a driver for the Nagpada motor vehicle department. Shockingly, Umesh Dakua, slipped into coma after the accident, and on Saturday he was declared dead in the hospital. Social activist Prashant Singh Thakur, associated with NGO Human Rights Mission said, “it is not an accident, it is murder; we will not claim the body till constable Nilesh Kinjalkar is booked under section 302. Dakua and Vinayakar, both students and residents of Ghatkopar, had gone to the Somaiya hospital in Chunabhatti to collect reports of Dakua’s ailing grandmother. Vinayakar, who was also injured in the accident said, “I will never forget that horrific night, after the police van hit us and we fell on the road. I was unconscious for a while. When I came to my senses, I saw the van speeding away. Umesh was hit on the head and was bleeding profusely. With the help of the two youths, I took him to Sion hospital. I have lost my best friend and I want that constable who does not have humanity should be sacked from his job immediately and booked for murder.” Thakur, the social activist who is helping Dakua’s family said: “It is shocking that the cop fled after the accident. He should have rushed the youths to hospital. That would have saved a lot of time. After the incident Chunabhatti police have also erred. They did not conduct the medical test of the accused.” Investigation officer in the case said: “we are going to add only section 304 (A) IPC because both the accused and victim did not know each other. Earlier, we had booked constable Nilesh Kinjalkar under section 279, 337 and 338 but now we will call him again to record his statement.

Now the Sainis are trying all possible means to get financial help so that Anand can undergo transplant at the earliest. And in the meanwhile, Anand is on dialysis, which is a painful process that drains the patient as well as the family, mentally, physically as well as financially. “We have approached some charitable trusts and NGOs. he wait for organs in order to undergo a transplant is painful but what is more frustrating is that despite having a donor, financial crunch is delaying the procedure. The Sainis are currently going through such a phase. Thirty-year-old Anand Saini who was diagnosed with kidney problems three years ago has a ready donor: his mother, Sayamma Saini (50). But the reason for delay in undergoing the transplant is that this being a case of transplant between unmatched blood group, (Anand an O+ve and his mother a B+ve), the cost has risen and the efforts of the family to collect the required money, has met with little success. Anand was diagnosed with renal failure three years ago and was suggested a transplant in January 2014 after undergoing dialysis all along. Unable to find a donor from centres that help people in need of kidney transplant or a family member with a matching blood group willing to donate a kidney, the Sainis agreed that Anand undergoes an unmatched blood group kidney transplant as they wanted to give Anand a better life at the earliest. “After deciding that Anand will undergo a transplant, we waited for two months to get a donor but with no results. ways in thousands. We thought that none of us could donate our kidney because our blood groups did not match but then we were informed that this is possible. As we wanted Anand to get back to normalcy soon, we decided to go for a transplant between unmatched blood groups. My mother agreed to be the donor,” said Satyanarayan, Anand’s brother. But this decision came with financial hits for the Sainis as none of the BMC or state run hospitals seem to be doing this kind of surgery and also, the cost of this surgery is higher than the regular transplants. “We were told that none of the BMC or state run hospitals do this kind of surgery and that only a few private hospitals in the city can do this. We have been informed that the transplant can cost us around eight lakhs,” said Satyanarayan. Jaslok hospital being one such centre in the city, is handling Anand’s case. Rushed to a nearby hospital and was immediately admitted with high creatinine levels After a month or so another bout of illness revealed renal failure and the need for Anand to be put on dialysis at the earliest Started dialysis in October 2013 which is going on till date In January 2014, Anand’s treating doctor suggested that Anand undergoes a transplant where the antibodies in the recipient’s body have to be removed so that the body accepts the transplanted kidney and there is no rejection. We also give some injections to suppress the antibodies that can be formed against the grafted kidney and to prevent formation of such antibodies. These injections are expensive and the cost goes up by one-third. While a normal transplant costs around five to six lakh rupees, this might cost around eight lakhs. The success rate is around 85 per cent to 90 per cent.”

old prices have been falling for three continuous weeks after making a high of $1390 mark in the international markets. This trend is likely to continue in the coming days in the international as well as domestic markets. Given the fact that the growth in the US economy is showing signs of recovery, the Federal Reserve is likely to completely end the QE3 and this would raise the interest rates in the US by mid 2015. The impact of domestic factors, like the value of the rupee which is driven by the inflows in the equities and the movements in the dollar also had an impact. In addition, there has been lackluster physical demand across a host of regions as gold markets need the trigger from the physical side for prices to rally and this will continue to shadow gold prices in coming days. Does it means that the yellow metal will loose its shine and enter a multi year bear phase? “Yes,” says Vikram Dhawan, Director of Equentis Capital. “The triggers for stronger gold prices like Central Banks buying, weaker dollar, elevated geopolitical risks, volatility in currency and equity markets and last, but not the least; strong physical demand are absent for the moment. Moreover, Gold ETF investors continue to exit at rallies. All this has the potential to nudge the Gold Market into a multi-year bear market and we may be in middle of one,” says Dhawan. Dhawan points out that physical gold sales in India, which is the largest physical gold market in the world, has fallen significantly, thanks to the quantitative restrictions on

gold imports imposed by the government. “Globally, Central Banks are not aggressively buying gold at the moment. These along with sizable redemption’s from Gold ETFs or ETPs are keeping a lid on the prices,” he says. According to a Macquarie Economic Research report quoting the Ministry of Commerce, gold imports slowed to US $39bn in 2013 from US $53bn registered in 2012. Specifically, on a monthly basis, gold imports to India have shrunk to an average of US $1.3bn since June 2013, registering a decline of 74% over the US$5.1bn (average) recorded in the previous 12 months. Government measures including increases in customs duty, measures to disincentivise gold imports and rupee depreciation all helped moderate Indians’ demand for gold. A bull run in equities might have also lead to money moving towards equities after this recent appreciation in prices and resulted in some correction as per experts. The latest data from World Gold Council (WGC) indicates that China has surpassed India to become the world’s largest consumer of gold in 2013. Dhawan feels that we may continue to witness bear-market rallies, but prices will eventually revert to lower ranges. “However, we don’t see the prices going below 1100 $/oz and staying there for long, as it may prompt mine closures or mothballing of existing projects,” says Dhawan. “Gold prices may range between 1100-1400 $/oz in the mediumterm,” he says. Naveen Mathur,Associate DirectorCommodities & Currencies, Angel

Commodities Broking, indicates that the gold investor index, which measures the balance of customers to gold holdings; over those reducing them was down to 53 in March from 53.5 in February. “The fall was continuous for the first three months of this year,” he says. “Looking at the growth prospects in the US, the FED has already signaled an end to its bond buying, whereas, the ECB has opened doors to ease monetary policy further, if needed to boost the Euro zone economy. This in turn has raised hopes of a stronger dollar, i.e. negative for the yellow metal,” says Mathur. Continued on pg 14 »

ere is a staggering statistic that many might find hard to believe: out of India’s 1.2 billion population, only 1.5% of the population is participating in the stock markets in some way or form. In the US, that figure is closer to 40%. Indians have been known to be risk averse when it comes to investing. But that does not explain why there is such a glaring lack of investor awareness. Simply put, most of us are not aware of the fact that investing in the stock market is one of the best ways to build wealth in the long run in a relatively conservative way. Why is it that less than 2% of the population invests in the stock market? We are constantly bombarded with banks encouraging us to participate in fixed deposit schemes- they tend to produce anywhere between 7-9% annually. Surely that’s a better decision than to invest in the stock markets, right? The answer is that, sadly, a combination of misinformation, high brokerage rates, and a lack of investor awareness has led to the dismal statistic. The reality is that if one were to invest in the stock markets, probability dictates that he/she would fare better than through virtually any other low-risk investment.

Keep the Long Term in Mind If you have watched the movie Guru, you would know that the movie is loosely based on the depiction of the rise of Reliance Industries and its founder, Dhirubhai Ambani. If one had purchased Reliance Industries shares in 2000, those same shares would have appreciated 475% through 2014. In return, if one had placed their funds in an FD and earned 8% during the same time period, they would have earned just 194% return on investment. Keep in mind, companies in India generally pay dividends as well to investors. Although this can adversely affect the share price of the stock (which is why certain companies like Berkshire Hathaway and Google in the US do not pay dividends), this is an increase in returns. Generally speaking, when a company issues a dividend, the overall return is calculated as: Return on investment = [ (end price - begin price) + dividends received ] / begin price. Simply put, it is generally a good idea to invest in the stock market versus a fixed deposit scheme or other types of investment schemes since, in the long run, fundamentally sound firms will outperform schemes such as Fixed Deposit and Recurring Deposit schemes.

How to Get Started One of the best ways to get started with investing is to ensure that you are paying little to no brokerage and unnecessary fees to your broker. Brokers in India generally do not have much of an incentive to lure investors since they generate little brokerage (investors do not place many trades, while active traders do); that is why investor awareness is lacking. If a

broker does happen to promote investing, there is a good chance that their brokerage fees will be high; this, in turn, discourages the investor after a few months due to the brokerage fees wiping out any profits he would have otherwise made. Secondly, it is important to begin with the basics. Starting with fundamentally sound, blue-chip companies that have stood the test of time is a

great way to begin investing. Learning the basics of risk management and starting out slowly in a structured, systematic fashion provides many benefits: it is less risky (versus investing in mid-cap or smallcap companies), it gives you more time on your hands, and it saves capital. Due diligence, practice, and discipline is built over time. There is the famous saying “Rome

was not built in one day”, which alludes to the idea that patience is required to achieve success. That being said, the Romans built the Colosseum, one of the greatest monumental structures in the history of time. They built the Colosseum in less than 10 years using the most efficient and advanced techniques of their time. The same, exact analogy can be applied to investing.

Gold To Enter Multi Year Bear Phase?

Continued from pg 13 «

However, experts suggest that there would be a short term appreciation in the price of gold. “Short term appreciation would be on account of escalating Geo-political tensions between US, Russia and Ukraine. Russia has raised the gas price for Ukraine on Thursday for the second time last week, piling pressure over Ukraine as it is already on the brink of bankruptcy in the crisis over Crimea,” says Mathur. “Also, if India removes its curbs on imports, we might see incremental demand chipping in which can act as a positive factor on the

domestic front,” he explains. “In the near term the gold prices could move in the range $12401350/oz whereas, in domestic markets gold prices would move in the range Rs 27300-29700 per 10 gram. Gold prices in the international markets would stabilize around $1180/oz mark whereas in the domestic markets prices would stabilize around Rs.26500/10gms mark,” Mathur predicts. According to Pramit Brahmbhatt, Veracity Group CEO, considering global investors are reducing their gold portfolios and the dollar is getting weaker against the rupee “We can see a sharp decline in gold in the Indian market compared to the

international market. We can see range of Rs 24500 to 26800 per 10 grams in the coming months,” says Brahmbhatt. “Stabilizing US and UK markets has brought global investor attention back to the financial markets, so the demand for gold as a safe heaven has gone down,” he says. However, according to the reports from the central bank, it is considering removing some of the curbs to trade that have crippled imports. In that case, India the second highest consumer of gold will likely import more gold, which is also likely remove some sheen in gold prices. And if a stable government comes in, the rupee is likely to strengthen

which can exert downside pressure on prices, believe experts. “In fact, I am bullish about the long term where one can see the price going to $1400-1500 i.e. two years from now once the dollar regains equilibrium and the long run relationship between the two variables is re-established,” says D. R. Dogra, MD & CEO, CARE Ratings. Dogra feels that in the very short run, prices would go up because typically demand increases in India in April-May due to the marriage season as well as channeling of rural income to gold. “But given the curbs put by the government on the official route, demand may be lower than last year,” he says. “If we are

talking of the next 6 months $12001300 will be the range one can look for,” says Dogra. Considering lower gold imports alone have contributed to nearly half of the narrowing in India’s CAD to US$40bn estimated in FY14 vs. FY13 experts believe the new government may go easy on curbs. “As a stable government may result in appreciation of the Rupee, that may give the government of the day some breathing space to rollback some of the quantitative restrictions on gold imports,” says Vikram Dhawan. “This will have a mildly positive impact on the gold prices in the long-run,” he concludes.

he Indian mutual fund industry reached another milestone in the quarter ended March 2014. Its average assets under management or AUM (excluding fund of funds) rose over 3%, or by Rs 277 bn, to Rs 9.04 trillion, according to the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI). Growth in the latest quarter was driven by inflows into fixed maturity plans (FMPs), money market and equity funds. For the financial year 2013-14, the industry’s assets increased 11% or Rs 876 bn vis-à-vis 23% growth seen in the previous financial year, says a Crisil Research report. According to the report the equity mutual funds’ average AUM rose for the second consecutive quarter and regained the Rs 2 trillion mark after a gap of three quarters. The assets rose by 4% or Rs 71 bn to Rs 2.03 trillion led by inflows in January and February (as per latest data available from AMFI) and mark to market (MTM) gains in the quarter. The underlying market, represented by the CNX Nifty, gained 6% during the quarter, led by encouraging domestic economic indicators, positive global sentiment and strong buying by foreign institutional investors (FIIs). Assets of fixed maturity plans (FMPs) rose by 18% or Rs 234 bn to Rs 1.55 trillion during the quarter and contributed the most to push the overall mutual fund assets to a record high. The category saw a spurt in new launches (a typical financial year end phenomena) as investors were drawn to the indexation and double indexation benefits offered by these funds. As per the latest data available from AMFI, in the first two months of the latest quarter, fund houses garnered Rs 326 bn by

launching 203 FMPs compared with Rs 341 bn by launching 187 FMPs in the March 2013 quarter. A high interest rate scenario led by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) monetary tightening measures since July 2013 also prompted investors to lock their investments at higher yields in these closed-ended funds. Yields on the one-year commercial paper (CP) and certificate of deposit (CD) traded at 9.44% and 9.06%, respectively on March 28, 2014, up significantly from 8.76% and 8.15% at the end of June 2013. Assets of money market funds grew by 4% or Rs 92 bn (vis-à-vis 35% or Rs 602 bn rise in the previous quarter) to Rs 2.41 trillion. The category assets gained due to inflows arising from the improvement in liquidity due to lending by the RBI through its term repo window, purchase of gilts via open market operations and the government’s capital infusion into state-owned banks. Further gains for the category were offset by outflows in March resulting from corporate advance tax and financial yearend requirements.

The debt (long and short-term) and gilt funds category underperformed in the March quarter owing to the uncertain interest rate environment. The debt and gilt category typically performs well in a falling interest rate scenario. Debt (long and short term) funds’ AUM fell by Rs 158 bn to Rs 1.65 trillion, while gilt funds’ AUM fell by Rs 8 bn (the biggest fall since September 2010 quarter when the AMFI started declaring quarterly average AUM) to Rs 69 bn. Average AUM of gold exchange traded funds (ETFs) shrank by around 5% (or Rs 4 bn) to Rs 91 bn in the reported quarter following an 11% fall in the previous quarter. The category saw outflows of Rs 3.4 bn in January and February despite a rise in the prices of underlying assets during the quarter. The share of direct plans increased to 33% of the industry’s AUM (excluding fund of funds) in the reported quarter vis-à-vis 30% in the previous quarter. In terms of absolute assets, the average AUM of direct plans rose 12% (Rs 321 bn) to Rs 2.95 trillion during the March quarter from Rs 2.63 trillion in the December quarter.

When The Customer Is Confused, The Brand Is Refused JAGDEEP KAPOOR is CMD of Samsika Marketing Consultancy

« BRAND GYAN

S

ometime ago almost all textile brands were advertising in a similar fashion and if one just change the brand name and logo, it would be difficult to make out the difference. Similarity could confuse the customer and because of that the consumer could refuse the brand. However, when a couple of brands are able to create a separate brand identity and are able to cut the clutter, those brands succeed and are well accepted. It is important to be distinct and unique if a strong brand has to be built. Any haziness or lack of comprehension could actually see wastage of resources with no compensating revenue. In fact, the clearer the identity the better is the chance for the brand to do well and enter the mind and heart of the consumer, thus leading to good sales. There are 4 ingredients which are important to be used so that the customer is not confused and a unique and distinct identity is built for the brand. The first ingredient is the name of the brand. Similar sounding names do not sell. The first brand with the distinct name continues to be the leader and the follower brands actually spend their money on advertising only to help increase the sale of the leader. It is not recommended to have similar names. The second ingredient is that of Brand Positioning. After perceptual mapping is done, gaps should be found in the market place to make sure that your brand has distinct positioning. Thirdly, similar packaging causes confusion and the consumer could rush to the safety of the tried and tested pioneer brand, thereby ensuring greater success to the pioneer while keeping away from the followers. Fourthly, a ‘Me-Too’ concept usually fails. This is because anything that is fresh in terms of an idea cuts the clutter, but other brands which copy it fall by the way side. It is important to understand that when there is non-clarity there could be the consumer shying away from participating in the brand. This is because a brand stands for trust and when a consumer is confused a doubt creeps in keeping him away from the brand. Many a time brand marketers take a short cut by trying to copy other brands and walk the beaten path. This may seem easy in the beginning but could be disastrous for the

brand because it could lose its way, because of the consumer being vary of trying it out. Brand marketers must look at offering benefits, concepts, brand names, positioning, packaging as well as communications, which has its own distinct brand personality. This way the brand will win and would cut the clutter above the din. Confusion usually arises either from the brand marketer’s end or from the consumer’s end. In either case the responsibility is of the brand marketer to make sure that there is clarity and distinct positioning and communication that the consumer understands. The consumer cannot be blamed for misunderstanding. It is the brand marketer’s responsibility to ensure that his marketing plan and his communication strategy is such that it leaves no scope for non understanding or misunderstanding. Simplicity in the strategy works well which should be based on a deep consumer insight and on a sound product and packaging strategy. Brands that succeed are usually simple to understand, easy to use and also noticeable to be remembered. Making it easier for the consumer to consume the brand is an important responsibility of the brand marketer. Any kind of copying or similarity with other brands could lead to confusion and make the consumer hesitate in buying or they may make the consumer postpone his decision till he gets clarity. I would strongly recommend that right from the brand name there should be uniqueness in the proposition. If the brand name sounds or looks similar it has less chance of success. The packaging and the product concept also should stand apart from the crowd of brands so that it is easily recognizable and has a character and personality which cannot be mistaken for any other brand. This makes the consumer sure that the brand that he is buying is the brand that he desires. The positioning and the communication must not only have the relevant and credible benefits but it should also have the evidence and the proof to ensure not only trials but repeat purchases. Many a time brand marketers are in a hurry to replicate someone else’s success thereby creating confusion and actually helping the brand that they copied, to do well. Herd instinct is not necessarily a good brand strategy to build your brand. While the same product segment may offer great opportunity, it would be prudent to approach it in a unique and distinct manner so that the brand personality stands tall amongst the rest. It may begin small initially but later on could become a mega brand. Therefore remember, don’t confuse the consumer or he will refuse your brand.

A strategist who looks at the micro factors within the investment segment along with the overall economic scenario. He believes that to be good investor one needs to look at the overall picture including fundamental and technical analysis. That’s Pramit Brahmbhatt, CEO, Veracity Group, who shares his views with Dominic Rebello on his approach to succeeding as an investor

A little background about your company and yourself? I am a management graduate holding a BBA and MBA (Finance). During my MBA studies, I realised that to understand the core of financeit is important to have accounting knowledge. So I decided to qualify in accountancy. I did my ACCA from London and that helped me get global exposure. After seven years of experience in the UK, I moved back to India in 2009 and started a new initiative in the currency market. I have now expanded my group’s exposure into equity and commodities. My company Veracity is a member of all major exchanges like NSE, BSE, MCX and NCDEX. The vision is to provide diversified investment opportunities under one roof. How do you pick your investments; Technical or Fundamental analysis? To select any investment products one needs to look at the overall scenario. It is very difficult to pick it on the basis of either of the analysis. For investment we have to analyse various areas to mitigate the risk. Also it is important to be flexible and not be overloaded with various analysis. So to summarise, one needs to use some basic

« MARKET WIZARD PRAMIT BRAHMBHATT

technical analysis and at the same time look at the fundamental scenario and macroeconomic scenario.

How would you describe your methodology? It is important to look at the micro factors within the investment segment and it is also important to look at the overall economic scenario. Once I am certain about the particular product, I try to analyse the larger economic scenario. It is important as sometimes the product is good, but the overall situation is not perfect for the investment. In such a scenario, the return on investment can have limitations. So in order to invest into the product, it has to be good first and then the overall market should offer a supportive situation.

What differentiates you from other traders/Investors? It is very important to have a clear vision while investing. In the era of globalisation, financial markets are not only affected by local factors but international as well. My understanding of the global markets gives me more comfort. During the selection of any investment products, I use basic analytical tools rather than trying to use all the available tools. It helps me to keep my focus on the entry and exit strategy. Also at the same time I prepare for any unexpected scenario. What gives you that edge? I have witnessed financial markets in last 12 years. I have also witnessed the growth of the market from the recession of early 2000 to the pick up of 2006-7. In the same decade we have seen the historical depression of the global financial market.

MUMBAI | MONDAY, APRIL 7, 2014

Such events give a firstt hand experience. Being in the centre of the global financial market, I managed to understand the mind set of global investors. I think this is the biggest learning one has to use in the real world. Is there any applicable lesson to trading/ investing? Financial market are very dynamic and evolving and so we have to keep ourselves updated with the new changes. So learning and implementing the same is very important. The other most important lesson is risk management by understanding our own investment capacity and loss bearing capacity.

How much of what you do is gut feel? Investing on the basis of gut feel can be dangerous. Sometimes you have a feel about the particular product and it may even go in your expected direction. But it is always important to check the same with the necessary analysis to reduce the risk. Do you try to anticipate or follow market trends? What are the basis? Trend is your friend. But it is important to follow the trend with logical reason and exit at the right time. Majority of the time while analysing the market I can understand and anticipate where that the particular trend is going, but cross checks are always advisable. When you put money on a trade and it goes against you, how do you decide when you're wrong? There can be two scenarios in such an event. There could be a speculative move which drives market against you. In such a case the move would soon exhaust and correction happens. So if I believe that the there is no logical reason for

the move than I try to add move investments at higher levels. These additions give me good comfort when the markets normalise. In second scenario, when market moves against me due to some fundamental changes than the best thing is to exit the particular investment.

Where do you see the Indian markets five years down the road? Any number for the Sensex in 2015? The 2015 figure will be more or less dependent on upcoming government and its policy. Indian investors are presently optimistic. But India is at the cross road where if we select the right policies than we can go along way in economic growth. The edge India has at this point of time is that we have weaker competition from other emerging markets such as China, Brazil and Russia. So we should try to take maximum advantage of it. With right policies by the new government the Indian markets could make new highs.

What makes a trader/investor successful? To be a good trader, one needs to follow the daily trend and keep focus on a tight entry exit strategy. Also one need to have clear long term focus and shouldn’t look at smaller short term movements.

Any final words? Currently the Indian market has rallied on the back of aggressive FII funding which is a result of political and economic issues in major emerging markets like Russia, China and Brazil. I expect some correction in equity markets before the election results as there can be uncertain political conditions in India after the results. The path of Indian equity markets will depend on the outcome of the election results and policy decisions taken by new government. Globally, major economies like US and UK are improving since last 6 months. We will see US dominate global growth till 2017.

IT Professionals Turn Corporate Singers An offbeat singing competition amongst IT professionals witnessed a huge showcasing of talent. And amidst nail biting competition, Sachin Surve of Infosys and Shivani Khandekar of TCS both through a tie won the ‘Mont Vert IT Idol 2014’ title as singer Kunal Ganjawala judged the event

I

t was a rocking evening at the sprawling Mont Vert Vesta at Pirangut, Pune last week, as Kunal Ganjawala, celebrity singer delighted the over 1500 guests, with his foot-tapping numbers, ‘Bheege Hoth Tere’, ‘Gumsum’, ‘Janabe Aali’, ‘Tere Bin Kahin Lagta Nahin’, to name some. His popular Marathi numbers ‘Saade Maane Teen’ and ‘Varyavarti’, had the cheering crowd scream ‘once more’. He was performing live at the finale of ‘Mont Vert IT Idol 2014’, Pune’s biggest corporate singing competition among IT companies, held last week. IT professionals from 13 companies in Hinjewadi, participated in the musical competition, namely, Geometric Solutions, Tata

Technologies, LandT Infotech, Digital Group, Persistent, Mind Tree, Atos Software, Infosys, Cognizant, E-Zest, Tech Mahindra, TCS and KPIT. From a total of 65,000 employees, 3 participants were selected from each company. The auditions had started from 12th March, and ended on 27th March in which 474 singers participated. Eminent playback singers from Pune, like Yogita Godbole, Dhaval Chandwadkar, Savanee Ravindra, Chaitanya Kulkarni and Ali Hussain judged the 474 singers to get 39 semi finalists. Semi Finals were held on 29th March for the 39 semi finalists, from which 3 singers were chosen for the finals.

<< Winners of Mont Vert IT Idol 2014, Sachin Surve & Shivani Khandekar alongwith Kunal Ganjawala, Manish Kaneria, Director & Jayant Kaneria, MD Mont Vert at Pune’s biggest corporate singing competition among IT companies, held recently.

Kunal Ganjawala, had a tough time judging the extremely talented singers amongst the 3 finalists, Nihaar Mayekar of Infosys, Sachin Surve of Infosys and Shivani Khandekar of TCS, who presented 2 songs each. So impressed was he with their performances that he said, “all 3 of you have an alternate profession – singing”. Finally, there was a tie, and both Sachin and Shivani won the prestigious title of ‘Mont Vert IT Idol 2014’ by Kunal Ganjawala in the presence of Jayant Kaneria, MD and Manish Kaneria, Director of Mont Vert Homes. Nihaar was declared the 2nd runner-up. While Sachin and Shivani were confident of being selected as finalists, Nihaar shyly expressed that though everyone was sure he would be in the top 3, he himself wasn’t sure, as there were phenomenal performances by the semi-finalists. The trio unanimously thanked Mont Vert and Marrquee Events for this wonderful platform and the opportunity to share the stage with Kunal Ganjawala. “It has always been our endeavour to promote talent in sports and music. Mont Vert has organised several events in the past, extending a platform for youngsters to showcase their forte”, said a beaming Manish Kaneria.

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a second consecutive and long black body candle on higher volumes. In fact yesterday’s candle is almost like a Black Marubozu candle. (A Black Marubozu forms when the open equals the high and the close equals the low). Further, the index has crossed below its 5 days moving average. Moreover, the velocity parameters which were positively trended, have now turned neutral. All these indicate a negative bias. However, the index is still above its 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the three averages are rising and also positively trended. This is positive. Investors are advised to hold long positions but with a strict stop loss at the 15-day average at the 6615 point’s level.

CMP: Rs. 383 Target Rs. 460 Sobha developers (SDL) reported a strong pre-sales volume recovery for 4QFY14 which sets tone for return of quarterly pre-sales run-rate of ~1mn sqft. Whilst SDL has toned down its FY14 pre-sales guidance from 4.2mn sqft during 3QFY14 the new pre-sales value was marginally ahead of our expectation (~Rs23bn) at Rs23.4bn (FY14 guidance was Rs26bn). SDLs pre-sales recovery was largely influenced by new project launches encompassing 4 projects and total saleable area of 3.57mn sqft (vs 0.45mn sqft during 3QFY14). Since three of these launches were in the 2nd half of Mar-14 the full impact will get captured during 1QFY15E. We expect demand recovery during FY15E as (i) quality supply has reduced with ~45% of the real estate developers facing balance sheet stress and hence out of buyers radar (due to execution issue) (ii) quality developers properties have delivered appreciation in prices and continue to see buyer accretion (iii) Southern markets affordability remains strong whilst they deliver a better value in terms of quality & timeliness vs Northern & Western peers & (iv) SDL has scheduled new launches of ~10-11mn sqft over next 4-5 quarters. Maintain our bullish stance on the Southern players & we recommend BUY on dips on Sobha and Puravankara. SDL exhibited a strong pre-sales recovery after a dismal 3QFY14 on back of new launches encompassing a saleable area of 3.57mn sqft. With bulk of these launches in the affordable segment the conversion resulted in high pre-sales. The sales volume grew 24.5% QoQ whilst de-growing 14% YoY (out of 4 launches 3 were in the 2nd half of Mar-14). The new launches include Sobha Silicon Oasis & Sobha Valley View in Bangalore with total saleable area of 1.48mn sqft and 0.49mn sqft respectively whilst outside Bangalore, Sobha launched Rio vista in Calicut with saleable area of 0.51mn sqft and Sobha Isle in Cochin with saleable area of 1.09mn sqft. The key highlights of 4QFY14 are Bangalore witnessed a de-growth of 7.6% YoY, attributable to back ended launches which impacted pre-sales growth. Our view: We maintain our BUY stance and a SOTP-based target price of Rs460/share. We value the real estate business at Rs431/share using a NAV model and the contracting and manufacturing business (C&M) at Rs29/share. We believe that the near-term catalysts are: (i) strong launch pipeline and (ii) focus on further balance sheet de-leveraging.

ICICI SECURITIES CALLS A ‘BUY’ ON IDFC CMP: Rs. 125

Target Rs. 150

IDFC is the only listed NBFC to receive an in-principal approval for the banking licence in the current set of issuances by the RBI followed by Bandhan Financial Services, a micro finance institution (MFI). IDFC with its independent professional management and strong corporate governance has been selected to receive a licence. This indicates the RBI has avoided offering licences to large corporate houses in its first phase. However, as ‘on tap’ licences will continue, other strong candidates still remain in the fray. Though in first and second year of incorporation, RoEs will be dragged down, it is a long term positive as it offers cheaper funding options for a large scale lender. Citing the banking story, we are raising our target multiple to 1.3x FY15E ABV leading to a revised TP of Rs 150. We expect a sharp positive movement in IDFC in near term and recommend BUY. Eighteen months validity to convert and form NOFHC: The “in-principle” approval granted is valid for 18 months during which it has to comply with the requirements under the guidelines and fulfil the other conditions as may be stipulated by the RBI. Post RBI being satisfied, as part of “in-principle” approval, they would be considered for grant of a licence for commencement of the banking business. Until then, banking operations cannot be undertaken. It will have to transfer its subsidiaries related to AMC, private equity (alternatives) and securities to NOFHC. Hence, strong fee income on AUM and carry based gains will expectedly move out of bank (core lending business). Both these together (Rs 470 crore) form 17% of net total income as on FY13. Hence, until a year at least NBFC operations will continue as currently. Please send all business and corporate related mails to business@afternoondc.in

I am planning to invest in SBI Shubh Nivesh Endowment option. How much amount will I get in return if I invest a sum of 1 lakh yearly for 7 years? The agent has assured that this is a guaranteed product and hence I’ll get 10 lakhs after 7 years. He also said that I’ll get 1 lakh each year till my death. After my death, the corpus amount of 10 lakhs will be given to my legal heirs. Is this true? —Siddhi Sharma, Walkeshwar SBI Shubh Nivesh is an Endowment Plan with an option for whole life cover. In this plan, after completion of Policy Tenure, the Basic Sum Assured + vested Simple Reversionary Bonus is paid as Maturity Benefit and the policy terminates. If Deferred Maturity Payment option has been chosen, the accrued bonus will be paid on the date of policy maturity and the policyholder may choose to

receive the sum assured in regular instalments over the next 5/10/15/20 years as selected. There is no guarantee whatsoever of the amount that would be paid because it totally depends on the bonus component. According to the present rate of Bonus, it is 3% of Sum Assured. If your sum assured is Rs 10 lakhs, then 3% of Rs 10 lakhs, i.e. Rs 30000 is your yearly Bonus. For a 7 year policy, your total bonus component would be Rs 30000 * 7 (assuming the same rate of bonus every year) = Rs 2,10,000 + Rs 10,00,000 as Maturity Benefit + Terminal Bonus (if any). Now, you need to calculate how much you would get and when if you choose deferment option. But trust me, it is a good plan and you may consider it.

I had taken a LIC Jeevan Shree policy in 2000. I paid the premiums till 2006 and then I didn't pay the premiums for 6 years. In 2013 when I contacted the LIC office they replied me that the policy has lapsed and cannot be renewed. After contacting many agents they said that the policy can only be renewed after there will be Board Meeting of LIC. So I was thinking of surrendering it. Please advice. —Ramesh Bellur, Nahur You can surrender the plan but you would get 30% of your premiums paid less 1st year's premium as Surrender Benefit + vested Bonus, if any. Also, there is Special Surrender Value in this plan. This is a very good plan and since it cannot be taken now, it would make a lot of sense to

continue the plan. Contact the Branch Manager of your nearest LIC Office and give him a serious letter for all the harassment that you have gone through and ask them for help for the policy to be renewed. This matter should not be pending for so long as there is no grave decision. A simple renewal needs to be done and if it CANNOT be done (since 6 years have lapsed) then they need to help you to surrender the plan. This is a very case specific solution and should not be applied to all. Also, only the LIC Branch would be able to mention how much you would get a surrender benefit.

I applied for LIC Health Insurance policy but the company rejected the health insurance cover for my 3 year old son who was operated for congenital heart disease when he was 4 months old. Now he is medically fit and active. What should I do? Will my son never get any health insurance due to his old heart operations? —Sujitha Kaur, Sion Underwriting the risk on a person's life or health is a completely personal call. It depends on the Insurance Company whether they accept or reject the policy depending upon their internal underwriting judgement. There is no strict rule for the same. It depends on how much risk they can accept. Now, since there is no strict rule for underwriting, there is no way of knowing whether or not your son's policy would be accepted or not without applying for

the same. So, what you can do is apply to a General Insurance company, who has a higher capacity of accepting health related risks than life insurance companies and check if they can accept the policy or not. However, do remember to declare about your son's condition because if you do not then your claim might be repudiated on grounds of non disclosure or misrepresentation of material facts.

nevitably, even for a first time reader sampling a selected offering of a miniscule part of Gurudev’s prodigious output , the questions of translation comes up. Who has done the translation, how well is he known, what other translations has he undertaken, what is the general opinion of his work? How true has he remained to the letter and spirit of the original writing in Bengali? Arunava Sinha’s reputation seems impeccable, with considerable experience in translating “classic, modern and contemporary Bengali fiction and non-fiction into English”. He has published 20 books of translations, and won the Crossword Translation Award twice, including for Sankar’s Chowringhee. In fact, for the latter he was shortlisted for the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize (2009) for his translation of the book. Tagore himself had firm opinions on translation. The great polymath, equally at home with all forms of literature, able to conduct completely felicitous discussions on any subject, from education to agriculture, wrote at first only in Bengali, and later in English. With the winning of the Nobel Prize in 1913, came a hunger in the West to read the work of a man who was the first non-European writer to win the award. Translations became an imperative. Writing in his own preface to “The English Writings of Rabindranath Tagore. Volumes 18”, Dr Mohit K Ray says that in an interview given to Portland Press in Washington on October 23, 1916, the great man said, “My English translations are not the same. Each country has its symbols of expression. So when I translate my work I find new images and presently new thought and finally it is something almost entirely new. The fundamental idea is the same but the vision changes. A poem cannot be translated, it can only be relived in a different atmosphere.” A bit later in an interview given to the Evening Post in New York, he declared, “The English versions of my poems are not literal translations. When poems are changed from one language into another, they acquire a new quality and a new spirit, the ideas get new birth and are reincarnated.” Tagore was, for a large part of the time, actually translating himself, not always with the greatest success, and he articulated these difficulties when writing to Indian translator Ajit Kumar Chakrabarti, early in 1913. ‘What I try to capture in my English translation is the heart and core of my original Bengali. That is bound to make for a fairly wide deviation. If I were not there to help you out, you might probably find it impossible to identify the original in the translation.” In view of the difficulties of translating such wide swathes of truly felicitous writing, difficulties about which the writer himself had had experience, Arunava Sinha’s work on Tagore is a reassurance that they may not be insurmountable. And keeping in mind what the translator himself fears, that letter, mood, spirit and impact will be diminished in a language other than the original, we can say that this book is a success, infusing the writing with the taste, the sound and the image of the Bengal countryside in the late 18th century and in the turn of the last one. You get a glimpse of an utterly modern sensibility equally at home with traditional mindsets, a giant questioning mind able to observe the minutiae of everyday life as it ponders the big questions of existence, a man who loved the very shape and the feel of his native soil while exploring the possibilities of an urban existence ruled by the machine age.

CROSSWORD BESTSELLERS

FICTION

Sinha gives the 21st century reader of Tagore a judicious taste of Tagore in a novel, a novella, six poems, an equal number of short stories and a play. In “The Home and the World”, about family relationships that can both build and destroy and the inner strength that can re-create, two men and a woman play out their separate destinies against the backdrop of a swiftly-developing sense of patriotism that refuses to wear blinkers. The wonder is that Tagore seemed able to inhabit the mind of a woman as easily as he did that of a man, the dialogue ringing so true to form that in the first-person account of events, as offered by the three protagonists, it is three distinct personalities that speak. In hindsight, Bimala speaks of the disappearance of her inhibitions in regard to the new open-ness of her friendship with her husband’s best friend, thus: “ I wonder where my inhibitions had vanished. I had no time to regard myself – my days and nights simply whirled around me. And shame had no opportunity to penetrate my heart. “One day my sister-in-law told my husband in my presence, laughing, it’s the women who have done all the weeping in the family, Thakurpo, but it’s the men’s turn now. From now on, we will make you cry. What do you think, Chhotorani? Now that you’re dressed in your battle garb, warrior princess, fire away at the hearts of men. “She looked me up and down. There was a new colour in the way I was dressed and was behaving , none of which escaped her attention. I am embarrassed to write this today, but I felt no embarrassment that day. For my instincts were at work within me – nothing I did was a considered decision.” Such delicacy in the delineation of a pure mind warring with itself over strange new attractions, such micro observation of the human condition, and Sinha manages to convey it all! Above all else, the prose and the poetry both are drenched in the natural beauty of the Bengal countryside, the rains, the clouds, the breezes, the rivers conveying a dynamic that transcends the material descriptions of earth and land and sky and climate. In the short story, “Just One Night”, the protagonist sets out to become the aide, or the

Aastha and Shlok are nervous and anxious as the day of their divorce hearing in Court has approached. Vinayak is upset when he comes to know of it. Aastha calls Kalindi and asks for her support. She asks Niranjan to pardon her for any mistakes committed intentionally or unintentionally. The Agnihotri’s and Kirloskar’s meet at court. Aastha and Shlok sit in front of the judge where he asks both of them about their decision with regards to the divorce. Do they want to be separated or be together? They both look confused as they don’t want to leave each other. What will be their final decision? Will they say Yes or No? To find out, watch 'Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? ... Ek Baar Phir' on Starplus at 6 pm

He’s known as Hanuman in ‘Devon ka Dev Mahadev’ and Shree in the long-running comedy sitcom ‘Shree Aadi Manav’ on Sab TV. Now Vishal Kotian will be seen playing the witty Birbal on Big Magic’s historical comedy ‘Akbar Birbal’. This Meenakshi Sagar production which will soon be on air is a sitcom on the popular stories of Akbar and Birbal. Sandeep Hattangadi spoke to Vishal about his new show. Here is what the toned hunk had to say: What made you accept this show? Comedy has always been my forte and I’m glad to be back in this genre with Big Magic’s 'Akbar Birbal'. From what I’ve read of the script, the show promises to be wittier, more light-hearted and in line with the channel’s notion of only smiles. Having grown up with these tales, I’m looking forward to the challenge of adding another dimension to the much-loved character Birbal. But also because the channel is Big Magic. Are the Birbal tales the same as the classics? Yes. To an extent it is like what we read in Amar Chitra Katha while growing up. The show will be as entertaining as when we enjoyed them in our childhood. Writer Balvinder Singh has written

The all-new 'Airline'

Miditech is launching a new show called 'Airline' to be aired on Star Plus. Starring Tulip Joshi and Yudishtir, the show is all about the happenings in and out of the aviation industry. The show is reminiscent of the golden oldie show ‘Air Hostess’ starring Kitu Gidwani.

Saraswatichandra: 300 episodes

some really hilarious episodes for the show.

Who are the other characters in the serial? Kishwar Merchant will play the part of Urvashi – a dancer who is head-over-heels in love with Birbal. With Kiku Sharda essaying the role of Badshah Akbar and Delnaz Irani as Begum Sahiba. Are you comfortable shooting the show? Yes. Because I have worked with Kishwar, Delnaz and Kiku before and we all share a comfortable space with each other.

Give us your views on Big Magic. This is a Reliance owned channel, so it comes

with a certain corporate professionalism. With this foray into comedy, they are now what Sab TV was in its initial days, making it one of the niche comedy channels and now Big Magic is treading the same path. Will you continue with your plays? Yes. Stage is my first love and I enjoy doing theatre. I have a troupe with actor-director Paritosh Painter and we often perform shows of comedy plays.

And films? I was appreciated in Ashim Samanta’s ‘Don Muthuswamy’ and now my next release will be ‘Ek Cup Chai’. Well, it seems Birbal will entertain us as much as Vishal does!

Telly ‘jodis’ to real life couples Television shows often play Cupid for off-screen ek-duje-ke-liye couples By Sandeep Hattangadi

I

t has been a kind of a unique phenomenon that results in television pairs getting hitched to each other and solemnising their marital vows after romancing each other on the small screen. Some of the more prominent pairs are Ram KapoorGautami Gadgil, Sharad-Keerti Kelkar, Ronit Roy-Neelam, Rohit Roy-Manasi Joshi, Manav GohilShweta Kwatra, Rashmi Desai-Nandish Sandhu, Shakti Anand-Sai Deodhar, Karanvir Bohra-Teejay Sidhu, Yash Tonk-Gauri Yadav, Gurmeet Choudhary-Debina Bannerjee, Kiran KarmarkarRinku Dhawan, Apoorva Agnihotri-Shilpa Saklani, Payal Rohtagi-Sangram Singh, Rahul Mahajan-Dimpy Gan-

Well said indeed!

TV star-couple marriages are in fashion, at least for now! So if one is hunting for a spouse and unable to find someone for a long time, the ideal matrimonial solution is...join the cast of any TV serial which has nubile dames and eligible dudes and you're sure to get hitched.

guly, Aamir Ali-Sanjeeda Sheikh and the list goes on. They say that marriages are made in heaven but it seems on Earth they are happening on the sets of TV shows. So what is it about TV shows that gets the Cupid arrows winking? Is it the close proximity between the two individuals for extended periods of time during the nonstop TV shoots or the physical proximity and interaction be-

tween the two actors? Or is it because the couple stays in the viewers' attention as a couple and the rating points of the shows begin to zoom if they also a real life couple. None seem logical enough but the trend has just begun and looks like TV shows will be the next match-making pundits to arrange marriages or even those nowtrending love-cum-arranged marriages.

'Saraswatichandra' which airs on Star Plus, produced by Sphere Origins, has completed 300 episodes on Saturday. Based on Govardhanram Tripathi’s novel, the show has captured the hearts of thousands of fans. Sunjoy Waddhwa, CMD of Sphere Origins said, “We are very happy that the show is performing well and we have achieved great response from the audience. I really thank the crew of the show for their hard work and also the viewers who have been supporting and trusting us unconditionally.”

Ali's luck on the line

'Jeannie aur Juju' is a romantic comedy about Vicky and his genie who are in love with each other facing life and its daily challenges. This time Ali Asgar who plays the role of Vicky in the series has penned his thoughts for the upcoming track. Ali said, “I have deep faith in luck and its repercussions on our lives. I have faced some good and bad experiences that I would credit to the luck factor. This was a wonderful opportunity wherein it allowed me to set my ideology as a part of this show.” Watch how luck meddles with 'Jeannie aur Juju' on Sab TV from Monday to Friday at 9.30 pm.

Debina's connect with Mayuri

'Chidiya Ghar’ on Sab TV is the story of a fun-loving family comprising different members with their own uncanny and funny mannerisms. Mayuri played by Debina Bonnerjee thought of including a trendy look of herself in the ‘Chidiya Ghar’ series. She suggested that the creative team change her avatar to add an element of fun. After mutual discussions it was decided to westernise Debina’s look which would offer a fresh appeal to her character. Debina said, “Mayuri is one of my favorite on-screen personas that I connect with. I am excited to play a western avatar of her as it connects with the real me.”

Following an elite crew of workers– brakemen, engineers, construction crew, mechanics and train drivers–Discovery Turbo’s new series 'Railroad Alaska' illustrates the battle against ferocious weather and treacherous terrain to keep the state of Alaska's critical 650 mile long railroad rolling to deliver life sustaining supplies. he Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation recently fined Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Rs one crore for ‘illegally blocking’ the street that leads to BSE towers, since 2011. The BSE had put up bollards as well as barricades blocking the street soon after the serial blasts that rocked the city in July 2011. Reportedly, the blocking of the road causes chaos in the busy streets near BSE buildings. According to BMC, the permission to put up barricades on the street was only given temporarily after the bomb blast in 2011 but the BSE continued with it over the past few years on its own accord; ignoring repeated complaints from residents and office goers who have to deal with the chaos on a daily basis. The use of barricades for years on end, in the guise of security, has become a trend in Mumbai, especially in South Mumbai.

Here too, a pay and park facility had to be stopped and barricades have been placed next to the footpath so that vehicles can’t be parked. And, the pay and park signage, complete with details of parking charges, put up for the purpose, has been removed as well. But, the BMC does not seem like it has any problem losing out on revenue in this matter. Moreover, there are permanent cemented flower pots constructed on the roads, which work as ‘road dividers,’ that fall on the BMC’s blind spot. According to the law, it is unlawful to construct any permanent structures on public property in such an arbitrary fashion, threat or otherwise.

the ‘forcible takeover of public road.’ The police finally had to remove the barricades. But, the removal of barricades came with a rider – the police had said that the barricades will be back if they get any information about potential threat.

The Gateway turns into a veritable mess post dusk

And, even though now the streets might not be completely blocked, the barricades still make their presence felt. Three years since the barricades were ‘removed,’ there are still hundreds of barricades lining the streets, cordoning The Gateway o/f India, blocking parking space restricting pedestrian zones for ‘security reasons.’ Almost every evening the place is a complete mess with Back in 2010, when BMC was ques- tourists, totally baffled by the barritioned about the barricades placed cades all around, running amok tryaround The Gateway of India, it had ing to figure out the way to The replied saying that since it was the Gateway of India. police which had placed the barriThe area around The Gateway of cades in the area, the civic body will India, complete with hawkers, have to take the police’s permission tourists, police officials, parked pobefore it can do anything about it. lice vans, taxis and vendors seem to The police, on their part, main- be more chaotic than before the tain that the barricades are neces- barricades were added to protect sary as it’s a sensitive area under the monument. constant terror treat. Police permission needed to remove barricades: BMC

Around the same time, the executive director of the Institute of Conflict Management, which studies terrorism in south Asia Ajai Sahani reportedly said to a section of the media, “whatever the response after the Mumbai attacks has been, the objective has been to create the illusion of security rather than actually make the country more secure.” “But is India more secure, less vulnerable than it was on 26/11? The answer is an unqualified no,” he had maintained. Despite all threat perception, it makes little sense for the authorities - both civic as well as police - to encroach upon public property and affect rights fundamental to the common man. The Gateway of India, which is thronged by thousands of tourists across India and the world as well as local joggers, has been barricaded in a high-handed fashion that reeks of arbitrariness. In the absence of legislation or rule to prevent passage or regulate traffic, barricades placed on the roads aim to 'prevent parking' while at the same time themselves prevent the lawful passage of pedestrians and vehicular traffic. The rules for the pedestrian's right to passage and traffic movement have to be laid down and regularised. The arbitrary use of barricades to create diversions and road blocks is a violation of the rule of law and against public policy. This needs to change. The Right To Life as provided in The Constitution of India through Article 21 is closely associated with the ‘Right To Walk.’ Over the years, it has become nearly impossible for the common man to walk in public places, along public spaces and exercise a right that is intrinsically associated with your very Right To Life. Your ‘Right To Walk’ is associated with an inbuilt guarantee of safe passage without risk of injury or threat to life and property. But, are you assured of your Right To Walk? Hardly! With hard-nosed residents parking vehicles, often arbitrarily, in front of entrances to residential structures in violation of the local civic law; situations where the civic authorities turn a blind eye to barricades dumped unceremoniously onto footpaths, even in the middle of the road, posing a risk to motorists and pedestrians alike; to instances of corporates working closely with the authorities to collectively usurp public space and property lawfully meant for the pedestrian, the common man's Right To Walk risks being completely subverted. The Anna Hazare-Mamata fiasco: The story behind Anna’s no-show

Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | MONDAY, APRIL 7, 2014

Santosh Bhartiya

I

accept the allegations made on 14 March 2014 by Shri Anna Hazare because these allegations have been leveled by a person whom I have always respected. I have always believed that Anna Hazare sympathises with and feels for the poor, deprived, minorities, especially Muslims and economically backward people of this country and wants to change their lives for the better. I do not respect and honour him because of his simplicity or his wearing white clothes and a white cap, or because he stays in a temple, but I respect him because of his economic agenda. The 17 point economic agenda which he sent to all the parties is the key to allround development. I think that most parties in the country want to trap the economy of the country into the ‘chakravyuh’ (labyrinth circle of deceit) of market forces. The Congress, the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party want to establish a neo-liberal economy in the country. Neoliberalism makes the rich richer and the poor even more poor. At the same time, it is a policy which pushes the country into the vicious circle of chaos, civil war and communalism. Anna’s economic agenda was opposed to this neo-liberal system, therefore I supported Anna. When Annaji’s supporters formed a political party and he returned to his village and sat silent, I felt sorrow. I went to Annaji with General V.K. Singh and as a result, on 30 January 2013, Annaji held a huge rally at the Gandhi Maidan in Patna. Anna called this rally the Jantantra rally, announced the formation of an organisation called the Jantantra Morcha and broke off all relations with India Against Corruption and all other organisations functioning under his name. At the Patna rally Anna announced that all his programmes would be held under the Jantantra Morcha. The story behind this rally is that Anna had already announced the rally. All of Anna’s colleagues left his side. Anna had come to know that his old associates collected money in the name of donations and gobbled up the money. When Anna’s associates left him, then I and General V.K. Singh took on the responsibility of the Patna rally at Anna’s request. At this rally we allowed many NGOs to come on the platform. The interesting thing is that these people did not speak a word against the Government.

One of them just sang a devotional song and ended his ‘speech’. They had promised to support Anna, but when they felt that Anna’s intention was to sharply attack corruption in the Government, General V.K. Singh was going to attack the Congress, they distanced themselves from Anna. After that they did not support him in any programme. After the Patna rally, Anna expressed a wish before me and General V.K. Singh to travel around the entire country. We accepted Anna’s wish as an order and organised the Jantantra Yatra. Anna began the Jantantra Yatra in the country on 30 March 2013 and till October he travelled more than 28 thousand kilometers in six States and held more than 800 meetings. All these meetings were organised by the Jantantra Morcha. Annaji made up his mind to intervene in the politics of the country and under his signature

NOTES FROM NEW DELHI

first time. Anna Hazare praised Mamata Banerjee fulsomely. Anna Hazare came to Delhi on 18 February and met Mamata Banerjee at her home, partook of a meal and held a long discussion. On 19 February they held a joint press conference. At this press conference Anna Hazare reiterated that he wanted to make Mamata Banerjee the Prime Minister and for that would carry out an election campaign all over the country. The rally in Delhi had been organised by Anna’s supporters and it had been named the Jantantra Rally. Anna Hazare himself had seen the posters for the rally and approved them. Earlier Anna Hazare had participated in a one hour ad film shooting, which shows how keen Anna was to get that advertisement done. Actually, Anna wanted that in some way the Trinamool should come to power and implement the 17 point agenda. The rally was pro-

Veteran social activist Anna Hazare with W. Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee (File pic) sent a letter to all political parties, in which he sought their opinion about his 17 point agenda. After writing this letter, Anna indicated at various places during his meetings that he will support candidates who have a clean image and do not belong to any party. It is a matter of regret that not a single candidate contacted him. In December, the party of the Chief Minister of West Bengal replied to his letter and accepted his 17 point agenda in toto. Anna hid that letter in his drawer, did not leak it to the press. On 13 February Mukul Roy, all-India General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress, went to meet Anna Hazare and assured him that Mamata Banerjee supported his economic agenda. Then and there Anna Hazare told the media that he will support the candidates of Mamata Banerjee and that he will try for maximum wins for her candidates and will try and make Mamata Banerjee the Prime Minister. At this meeting, it was decided between Anna Hazare and Mukul Roy that Anna Hazare and Mamata Banerjee would hold a joint press conference in Delhi on 19 February and a day earlier, on the night of 18 February, Anna and Mamata would meet each other for the

posed for 12 March and Anna’s supporters organised it. Kisan (farmer) leaders, student leaders and old volunteers of Anna’s were part of his supporters. For this rally the Trinamool Congress also gave very average financial assistance. Three days before the rally it rained heavily in Delhi and till 5 o clock on the morning of the rally day it continued to rain, with hailstones in the areas around Delhi. Many people who had wanted to come for the rally could not do so because their crops had been damaged by the hailstones. People in Delhi felt that because of the rain arrangements at Ramlila Maidan would have suffered, therefore they did not come. That day was also a working day. It was seen even during Anna’s 2011 fast at the same ground that fewer people came on working days, and more people came on Saturday and on Sunday. There was another big reason. Examinations were going on in Delhi and this too prevented people who wanted to come for Anna’s rally from turning up in the expected numbers. On the day of the rally there was an infection in Anna’s eye and there was watering of a reddish hue from his eyes. Mamata

Banerjee came for the rally, but Anna did not come for the rally. When attempts were made to know the reason for his not coming, he sent a message to Mamata Banerjee that he was unwell and therefore could not come for the rally. However, news had already come that Anna had been besieged by NGOs to stop Anna from being at the rally. All these NGOs take money from the Government and get plenty of money from abroad. Because the possibility of an atmosphere being created for a pro-people economy had become stronger with the coming together of Anna Hazare and Mamata Banerjee, a conspiracy was hatched that if Anna does not listen to the BJP, the Congress and his old associates and separates from Mamata Banerjee, these foreign funded NGOs should be sent to ensure that Anna separates from Mamata. Unfortunately, Leftists opposed to the pro-market economy also joined the representatives of those NGOs, because they felt that Mamata Banerjee could be defeated in West Bengal by doing so. For them, the interests of the people of the country became secondary, while their fight with Mamata Banerjee became foremost. A week before the rally these NGOs were hemming in Anna and their purpose was to wreck Anna and Mamata’s pro-people economy commitment. The corporate sector also joined in because it was afraid that Anna and Mamata’s coming together would exert pressure on them and compel them to abide by their public responsibility. From the category of a revered person or saintly person these people made Anna stand in the category of a politician and said that the crowd is numerically small, so don’t go. On 13 and 14 March these NGOs held a meeting with Anna Hazare and together with Anna Hazare they decided to form a political front. It is a matter of regret that not a single one of these NGOs was ever a part of Anna’s Jantantra Yatra from the time it started in January last year till now. Only one person was there in Madhya Pradesh and he kept trying to explain to Anna that if you support Mamata, the Leftists will be wiped out in West Bengal. In fact, Anna and Mamata’s coming together was not only a danger to the neo-liberal economy, but the way Mamata has won the faith of the minorities, it could have proved to be a full stop for the politics of several big parties in many States in northern India. In Delhi the Mamata-Anna pair had already become a danger for the Aam Aadmi Party. Anna and Mamata would have not only influenced the General Elections of 2014 but would also have had an effect on the politics of the country. Therefore, it can be understood that many kinds of pressure must have been put on Anna.

DILLI KA BABU Stirring The SEBI Pot

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has a penchant for courting controversy, and its present chief Ranjit Sinha does not worry about stirring it up if he feels it’s worth it. CBI’s recent decision to launch a preliminary enquiry against former Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Bureau of India (SEBI) Chairman C.B. Bhave and ex-member K.M. Abraham, for alleged “irregularities” in granting sanction to the MCX stock exchange has, predictably, stirred up a hornet’s nest. Observers were taken aback when several redoubtable former babus came out in protest against the CBI’s move against the two former SEBI officials. Former Central Vigilance Commissioner N. Vittal and former Comptroller and Auditor General Vinod Rai have publicly questioned what they term as CBI’s “questionable action” while praising Bhave and Abraham for their “unblemished record”. Naturally, CBI chief Sinha denies that the probe against the former SEBI officials is ill-founded. He claims that the agency has credible information for initiating the enquiry. But the babus are not convinced.

UP’s Babu Woes

The jugalbandi of netas and babus in Uttar Pradesh is rarely out of the news – whether it be mass transfers ordered by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav or the shenanigans of individual babus. The actions of Kanpur’s senior superintendent of police Yashasvi Singh which resulted in junior doctors going on strike after the cops launched a brutal assault on them has brought more brickbats for the Samjawadi Party Government, already being lambasted for being lax on law and order and its poor governance record. It does need mentioning that this “unruly” cop was one of the two bureaucrats praised by Akhilesh Yadav as the most promising babus in the State recently! But the Chief Minister really put his foot in his mouth when during 'IAS Week' he informed his audience that he had made an IAS officer return a bribe. Certainly, he was not expecting the rush of criticism his remarks have drawn. Angry activists are now demanding that the Chief Minister take disciplinary action against the “culprit” or the matter will be brought to the attention of the judiciary. Never a dull moment for UP sarkar, as they say!

Feeling Left Out

Being a Union Territory and the capital of two States, Chandigarh is served by officers from Punjab and Haryana, besides those of the UT cadre. The relationship works along the prescribed 60:40 ratio; with 60 per cent of babus in Chandigarh belonging to the Punjab cadre and 40 per cent from Haryana. Of late there is much consternation among Haryana IAS officers who believe they are being shortchanged when it comes to serving in Chandigarh. Clearly the prevalent mood has warranted UT home secretary Anil Kumar, a Haryana cadre officer of the 1988 batch, to take up the issue with the Union Home Ministry. Though the issue has cropped up on several occasions earlier too, the current situation was reportedly triggered by Haryana babus planning to demand that the post of UT advisor be reserved for officers from the State. The move is well timed since the incumbent adviser K.K. Sharma is retiring next month. Also, Haryana IAS officers are aggrieved at three UT cadre officers in Chandigarh being given extensions, thus denying them a chance to serve in the UT Administration. — Dilip Cherian

Sri Lanka clinch maiden T20 World Cup as India falter in final

@msdhoni We have been a nuisance to the Bangladeshi public, they had to stop traffic when the team bus was going, sorry! #IndvsSL #wt20

April 2nd 2011, @sachin_rt in his final ODI won the WC. April 6th 2014, @KumarSanga2 and @MahelaJay in their final T20I won the WC

IRPUR: India’s quest for a historic treble ended in heartbreak as a gutsy Sri Lanka produced a clinical display to win their maiden CC World T20 trophy with a convincing six-wicket victory here. Sri Lanka thus became third time lucky in the World T20 summit clash while Mahendra Singh Dhoni’sdream to win a record third World title lay in tatters as his team faltered when it mattered the most. Despite Virat Kohli’s belligerent 77, Yuvraj Singh’s excruciatingly slow innings of 11 off 21 balls left India with a very modest score 130 for four in 20 overs. Kohli’s brilliance went down the drain due to Yuvraj’s struggle. Sri Lanka faced a few anxious moments in the early stages of the chase but eventually overhauled the target with 13 balls to spare. It turned out to be a ‘fitting finale’ for the two retiring legends of Sri Lankan cricket as Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara certainly made it a ‘farewell to remember’ as the champions ended their T20 careers with a memorable triumph.

@MahelaJay "This one is for the fans back home in Sri Lanka, who have been waiting for this since 1996." FIST AND FOREMOST: Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara celebrates with teammates after their win over India in the ICC Twenty20 Cricket World Cup final match in Dhaka. Mahela’s 24 was a sweet little innings which set the tempo while Sangakkara anchored it to perfection with an unbeaten 52. He again proved to be a thorn in the flesh for the Indians as he chose the final of the tournament to claw his way back to form after indifferent first five matches. The match decisively swung in Sri Lanka’s favour in the 15th over in which Thisara Perera (17 no) chanced his arms to hit Amit Mishra over long-on while Sangakkara swept him fine to get a boundary. 15 runs came off that over and the match was as good as over by then. In Mishra’s next over, Sangakkara hit him over extra cover for a

boundary while Thisara again hit the portly leggie for a six. Mishra went for 32 from four overs and would like to forget his last two matches after a good start. While Sangakkara made it a 'Farewell to Remember', Yuvraj Singh, may face the ire of Indian cricket fans as his slow batting completely upset the momentum for the Indians. Sangakkara completed his 50 off 33 balls with a sweep and was egged on by the hero of 1996 World Cup Sanath Jayasuriya. India though started their defence in right earnest when Kusal Perera (5) was removed in the second over by young Mohit. However in his next over, Jayawardene got

three boundaries as Lanka were finally up and running in their chase. The first was a cheeky upper cut, the second a tuck off his hips and the third a ‘lemon cut’ as 15 runs came off that Mohit over. Then came the Mahela special as he played a deft late-cut off Bhuvneshwar. It was followed with another cheeky scoop over bowler’s head as Indians had a surrendered look on their faces. T M Dilshan (18) was caught by Kohli at deep square leg fence off Ashwin as Sangakkara joined Jayawardene. BRIEF SCORES: India 130/4 in 20 overs [Virat Kohli 77, Rohit Sharma 29, Rangana Herath 1/23] lost to Sri Lanka 134/4 in 17.5 overs [Kumar Sangakkara not out 52, Mahela Jayawardene 24, Thisara not out 23] by six wickets.

Our batsmen could not convert the starts: Dhoni

MIRPUR: Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni attributed the team's loss against Sri Lanka in the ICC World T20 final to his batsmen's failure to convert the starts and the islanders' "brilliant" bowling at the death. Aiming to become the first-ever team to win the tournament twice, India's quest ended in heartbreak as Sri Lanka produced a clinical display to win their maiden World T20 trophy with a convincing sixwicket victory, thus scripting a perfect send-off to legends Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. "In the middle overs, our batsmen tried their best to get

going, but we couldn't convert the good start. Virat (Kohli) was the only one who could score but it was a little difficult for him also initially," Dhoni said at the post-match presentation ceremony. "We could have always got those 10-15 runs, but cricket is always about those extra runs." India could manage just 19 runs in the last four overs and that did not help their cause, but it prompted Dhoni to praise the opposition bowlers, especially Sri Lanka skipper Lasith Malinga. "The last four overs they executed their plans brilliantly and for our side that doesn't play scoops well, that worked for them,” Dhoni added.

Aussies eves complete hat-trick of titles

M

IRPUR: Australian eves once again proved their supremacy in women's cricket as they completed a hat-trick of ICC World T20 titles with a comprehensive six-wicket win over England in the final here today. Australian captain Meg Lanning smashed her way to 44 off 30 balls, helping her team surpass a paltry target of 106 with as many as 29 balls to spare. Lanning's innings had four boundaries and two sixes. The first six - a lofted shot over long-off ropes off seamer Anya Shrubsole - was a treat to watch. It was a copybook backlift and one

can't take away anything from that shot although the boundary ropes have been brought in by at least 10 yards for the women's final. The second six that Lanning hit was off a full toss by another seamer Jenny Gunn which she dispatched over mic-wicket ropes. She was finally dismissed trying to hit the winning runs off medium pacer Natalie Sciver as Heather Knight held on to a smart catch at mid-off. Brief Scores: England 105/8 in 20 overs (Heather Knight 29, Sarah Coyte 3/11) lost to Australian 106/4 in 15.1 overs (Meg Lanning 44, Elysse Perry 31 no) by 6 wickets.

Badhir Deception! By Anant Bhagwat

M

R Badhir (The numb) was sweating profusely. He did face a problem. He had 22 points & a balanced hand. He was trying to invent a convention which would allow him to wriggle out of the opening bid of 2 no trumps. Suddenly his brow cleared. He triumphantly opened 1 club. Now

BRIDGE his partner will have to bid a no trump or a major suit & he would push the conduction to him. But his partner was another Badhir. He bid 2 clubs. This was the hand.

When the dummy was spread MR. Badhir went into a trance. He muttered something to himself, counted something on his fingers & then shook his head disdainfully. He asked his partner” Have you not heard of me? Nobody in this town trusts me enough to

make me play a slam” then he proceeded to cash his tricks probably in fear that they would run away. First he cashed 4 hearts, finishing in dummy, and then he came up by cashing the diamond Ace. Then again he cashed dummy’s tricks. On the last club he discarded a spade & this was the position.

MR Badhir was already regretting cashing the diamond Ace, because now he could not finesse the diamond Queen. He looked at the ceiling but apparently it was not giving any inspirati0on. There was an eerie silence at the table. Suddenly he remembered! The club expert had once fooled him by playing Jack in a similar position. Mr. Badhir from the east position had ducked & the expert had won with singleton King. Hr tried the same manouevre now. He played dummy’s Jack. When east played small he laughed & said” Sir you should have taken the Ace, now you have lost it “with these words he played the king but to his great consternation west won the Ace. He hung his head in shame & waited for the abuse that was about that was going to come. Instead west played a diamond & he found himself making the contract. Later I spotted him sitting in a corner talking to himself & trying to arrange the cards to find out where the defence had gone wrong.

AHRAIN: Lewis Hamilton fought off Nico Rosberg to take his second victory of the season, winning Sunday night's Bahrain GP, a race in which teammates tussled. Racing under the lights at the Sakhir circuit for the first time, many expected Mercedes would have a clear advantage over their rivals and that was quickly evident as the two raced into the distance in their own personal battle. At the start pole-sitter Rosberg crossed the track to cover Hamilton's line but the Brit accelerated and kept his W05 pointing straight, giving him those vital metres into the first corner. The German tried to fight back through Turn 4 but it was all the Brit who led by a second after lap 1. Rosberg, though, was told laps later that

He was also told that he was on an "alternative strategy" and would be having a longer first stint so he needed to save his tyres. The German kept his team-mate honest with just a 1.5s gap between the two after 14 laps. However, three later, Rosberg not only closed the gap but also attacked for the lead. Hamilton gave him the corner only to cut back and then squeeze him.

The German yelled on the radio "warn him that was not on." The battle was not over as they pulled a similar sequence at Turn 1 on lap 19 only this time Rosberg held Hamilton at bay. Running sideby-side Hamilton was able to find that extra speed and pulled ahead. A lap later he was in the pits with Rosberg coming in two laps later. The duo went onto alternating strategies with Hamilton on the soft tyres and Rosberg on the mediums.

Perez has great race Mexican Sergio Perez was third for Force India, who also have Mercedes engines.WhileWilliams held the early advantage, it then went to Force India with Red Bull then getting into the mix. Racing hard - but clean, Perez claimed third ahead of Daniel Ricciardo, who fought back from his 10place penalty. Nico Hulkenberg was fifth despite an ERS problem in the latter laps as he held off Sebastian Vettel.

DY Patil crush Mumbai Police to claim fourth title M

UMBAI: D Y Patil Sports Academy claimed their fourth title in the Prabodhan Mumbai T-20 Cricket Tournament when they crushed Mumbai Police Gymkhana by nine wickets at the Prabodhan Kreeda Bhavan in Goregaon. The decision by skipper Pravin Tambe to put Mumbai Police into bat proved decisive. DY Patil have won all the T-20 tournaments held in Mumbai this season. The policemen were soon in trouble losing the top four for a mere 28 runs as Rakesh Prabhu and Aditya Waghmare created havoc with the new ball. A partnership of 48 between Manish Rao and the Sarfaraz Khan pulled the losers out of trouble. But just when it seemed that they would launch their assault came the master stroke from none other than Pravin Tambe. He induced a square cut off a leg break from Khan and Vineet Indulkar gleefully accepted

a half century from Vineet. The Policemen needed early breakthroughs to make a match of it but a spilled catch by Khizar Dafedar in slip let Vineet and D Y Patil off the hook. The bowler to suffer was Yogesh Jagtap. Vineet survived yet another chance when Sarfaraz failed to stump him off Vinayak Bhoir but that was too late in the game. The 76 runs opening partnership between Pawar and Indulkar sealed the tie in their team’s favour. BALE BEAUTY KEEPS MADRID

ON ATLETICO, BARCA'S TAIL

M

ADRID: Gareth Bale deputised ably for the injured Cristiano Ronaldo with a wonder strike from 35 yards as Real Madrid kept up the pressure on Atletico Madrid and Barcelona with a 4-0 win away to Real Sociedad. Atletico stay top, three points clear of third-placed Real, as they squeezed out a tense 1-0 win over Villarreal, whilst Barca remain in second after overcoming Real Betis 3-1 thanks to two goals from Lionel Messi yesterday. Real were leading 1-0 thanks to Asier Illarramendi's opener when Bale pounced on an error from Sociedad keeper Claudio Bravo to register his 18th goal of the season with a sweet left-footed striker 25 minutes from time before Pepe and Alvaro Morata rounded off the scoring. Sporting rally to hold Churchill to 1-1 draw

MARGAO: Sporting Clube de Goa rallied to hold Churchill Brothers to a 1-1 draw and split points in the 23rd round of the I-League, played at Nehru Stadium here. Churchill Brothers, who needed a victory badly in their quest to avoid relegation, took the lead in the 72nd minutes. Sporting fought back and found the equaliser in the 80th minute through Boima Karpeh. Churchill Brothers, who had more of the exchanges and scoring chances, have themselves to blame for as they failed to score with Wolfe being the worst offender. They now have 19 points from 20 matches. While Sporting Clube de Goa remained on fourth place with 33 points from 22 matches. Both the teams played an attacking game but failed to break the deadlock in a barren first half. Churchill Brothers, who are looking desperate for a win in order to avoid relegation, started on a promising note as they showed a lot of urgency, especially in the later part of the first half but wasted the chances that came their way with Anthony Wolfe being the main culprit. Churchill's midfielder Abdel Shabana, who led the attack from the middle, was instrumental in initiating most of the moves.

Year Ronaldo due to a knee problem, Madrid took their time to get going in San Sebastian and could have been behind when Antoine Griezmann's header flashed just over the bar midway through the first-half. However, Carlo Ancelotti's men went in front the first time they really threatened the Sociedad goal as Bale fed Karim Benzema and when Bravo could only parry the Frenchman's effort, Illarramendi was on hand to slot home against his former club. Sergio Ramos and Benzema then struck the bar as Real started the second-half with greater intent. Bale killed the game off as a contest when he collected Bravo's errant clearance and thumped the ball into the bottom corner before the Chilean international could get himself back into position. Pepe

added a third as he turned home Ramos' knockdown before substitute Alvaro Morata broke clear to make it 4-0. Barcelona were made to struggle at home to bottom-placed Betis as they needed two penalties and a Jordi Figueras own goal to see off Los Verdiblancos. Messi put his side in front from the spot after just 15 minutes and the hosts looked to have the game sewn up when Figueras turned the ball into his own net from fully 20 yards. Ruben Castro brought Betis back into the game moments later, but Messi killed the game off four minutes from time by slotting home the rebound after Antonio Adan had saved his second penalty of the day. And Barca boss Gerardo Martino admitted his side had suffered a bit of a hangover from their Champions

League clash with Atletico. "When you play for something that is so important twice in such a short period of time as the two games against Atletico what comes in the middle isn't as decisive," he said."I was also a bit short with the rotation of the players. Watching the game I could have given more rest to some of the players that played against Atletico." Atletico were far from their best as an early goal from Raul Garcia was enough to claim all three points at home to Villarreal. "We were holding on more because it was only 1-0 than because Villarreal had a lot of chances," admitted Atletico boss Diego Simeone. "The players have come from making a huge effort in midweek and I can't find the words to keep congratulating them on their effort.”

Lee Chong Wei, Wang Shixian emerge India Open champs N

EW DELHI: In a domineering performance which vindicated his world number one status, Lee Chong Wei of Malayasia thrashed China’s world number two Chen Long 21-13 21-17 in the men’s singles final of the US$250,000 Yonex Sunrise-BWF Metlife India Open Super Series badminton championship, at the Siri Fort Sports Complex, here, on Sunday. The top seed Wei, with his sublime skills and deft touch, proved too good for his Chinese opponent, who was left looking for answers. Chen Long tried his best but the efforts were not sufficient to prevent the Malaysian, who has played in the final of all the four editions, march to an authoritative triumph in 55 minutes for his third India Open success. He had earlier lifted the title in first edition in 2011 and 2013 and was runner-up in 2012. A jubilant Wei said that he dedicates the win to his son. “This win is for my son. I also want to thank all the Indian fans who have supported me and am keenly looking forward to return back to India next month with the Malaysian team for the Thomas Cup,” he told media persons after the match. “I enjoyed the match today. Chen Long didn’t play too well and made a lot mistakes,” he further pointed out. Earlier, in the all-Chinese women’s singles final, second

World rank number three, 24-year-old Shixian, winner of the All England title defeating Xuerui in March, repeated her Birmingham success with a 22-20 21-19 verdict in 47 minutes. In contrast to the men’s final, the third meeting between the two Chinese shuttlers this year failed to live up to expectations. The approach of the two women was casual, lacking the kind of aggression and competitive edge normally witnessed in the title round. Besides the All England event, they had earlier contested

the Malaysia Open final in January, which Xuerui had won. Both Wei and Shixian received US$ 18,750 each and the trophies, while Chen and Xuerui got US$ 9,500 each. Final results - Women singles: 2Wang Shixian (CHN) bt 1-Li Xuerui (CHN) 22-20, 21-19. Men singles: 1Lee Chong Wei (MAS) bt 2-Chen Long (CHN) 21-13, 21-17. Somdev wins, India enter Davis Cup World Group playoffs

BUSAN (KOREA): The Indian Davis Cup team entered the World Group playoffs after notching up a historic away triumph over Korea following Somdev Devvarman's win over Yong-Kyu Lim in the reverse singles of the Group I Asia/Oceania second round tie here today. Somdev prevailed 6-4 5-7 6-3 6-1 in the first reverse singles to make the overall scoreline 3-1 in favour of India, rendering the second reverse singles inconsequential leading to its cancellation. Bopanna, who partnered Saketh Myneni in the crucial doubles win yesterday which handed India the advantage. It was another one of those trademark fighting efforts by Somdev, who had endured a tough contest on the opening day as well.

Suthirtha qualifies for Nanjing Youth Olympics

BANGKOK: Promising paddler Suthirtha Mukherjee booked a berth in the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China after beating Malaysia's An Qi Angeline Tang 4-0 in a one-sided match of the Asian Qualification tournament here. Mukherjee won 11-5 11-4 11-2 11-9 to become the 16th player to qualify for the August Games. Right from the start, the Indian was in attacking mode and it paid rich dividends. After taking the first three games easily, Mukherjee slackened a bit in the fourth, providing her Malaysian opponent ample opportunities. "During breaks and at time out in the fourth game, coach (Muralidhar) Rao Sir told me to keep my service and attacking variations going. They helped me a lot. I am happy I did not let him down. I very badly needed to win to qualify for the Games," said Mukherjee.

Bengaluru FC blank Mohun Bagan 2-0

KOLKATA: Leaders Bengaluru FC blanked Mohun Bagan 2-0 to go four points clear at the top of the table and inch closer to the title after their round 24 I-League fixture at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan here today. Thoi Singh put the visitors in front at the stroke of halftime while Sean Rooney doubled the lead in the 60th minute to help Bengaluru restore their four-point lead at the top, while Mohun Bagan remained in danger of relegation with 24 points from 22 outings. Mohun Bagan enjoyed a lot of possession in the opposition half but they never really tested Bengaluru custodian Pawan Kumar. Bengaluru, on the other hand, lacked penetration from open play and only looked dangerous from crosses with Mohun Bagan keeper Shilton Paul having to come out and punch clear twice.

Punjab win junior national hockey title

CHENNAI: Star-studded Punjab claimed the Junior National Hockey title with an overwhelming margin of 6-2 against a fighting Odisha in the final of the championship here today. Adopting to their usual aggressive methods, Punjab's Harjeet Singh converted a penalty cover with elan to sound the board in the very first minute and then Simranjeet Singh who netted two goals in their win scored the second goal in the ninth minute. In the 14th minute Balvinder Singh made it 3-0. The exchanges were on even keel for another 20 minutes and Odisha were looking to reduce the margin. Eventually, Odisha were rewarded when Sunil Ekka, one of their star performers, capped an almost solo effort five minutes before the break (1-3).
