espite the government prohibiting the removal of sand from embankments of water bodies, the Navi Mumbai sand mafia continues to blatantly use machines to extract and steal sand in Kharghar and the Ganeshpuri area near the Mansarovar Railway Bridge.

In fact, more than a hundred trucks per day are illegally loaded and sold in the open market mainly to builders and construction companies. On an average, each truck of the illegally mined sand fetches around Rs 7,000 to 8,000 for the dredgers. Multiply this by Continued on pg 8 ÂŤ

eading by example, Minister for Public Health Suresh Shetty and seven members of his family have pledged to donate their organs. His appeal to fellow legislators to join the cause has had encouraging responses with 253 out of the 366 legislators pledging to donate their organs after death.

On a wider scale, the rate of live organs, cadaver and eye donations and transplantations has shown a steady rise since 1995.

Shetty’s wife, mother, son, daughter, sister and sister-in-law have all pledged their organs after death. It was during the recentlyconcluded monsoon session of the state legislature in the legislative council that Shetty had made an announcement to this effect and also called upon his colleagues to voluntarily donate their organs after death. According to Health Ministry sources, 165 out of the 288 MLAs have asked for the organ donation form and 48 of the 78 MLCs have done so. This also includes 39 officers of the legislature and government.

transplants (related and unrelated) has touched 6,690, while that of live Liver transplants has been rather low at 48. The rate of Kidney and Liver transplants has picked up from 2007 when 397 cases of Kidney transplants were reported. The

Dengue kills a 14-yr-old

he month of August saw the first dengue death of the season in the city on August 5 as a 14-year-old from Koliwada, Worli succumbed to dengue after undergoing treatment for almost 16 days at a private hospital in the city.

“He was admitted to Bombay Hospital on July 19 with symptoms of fever and headache. He passed away on August 5. This is the first dengue death this season,” said Dr. Mangala Gomare, BMC assistant health officer.

Six cases of dengue have already been recorded in the first week of August.

There have been 214 cases of gastroenteritis, 28 cases of typhoid, 14 cases of hepatitis, six cases of cholera, one case each of swine flu and leptospirosis in the month of August this year.

Possibly the most pleasurable aspect of the forthcoming Ganesh festival is the waiting and by Friday, we will have entered the final month before Ganesh Chaturthi (September 9).

In the city, the women murtikars are out in full force, doing what they have been engaged in for years, making idols, putting in the finishing touches to shape and size, using a delicate touch to paint eyes and cheeks,loving attaching jewellery and ensuring that as always, Ganesha puts his best foot forward.

There is also something else that brings our women artists together most of them are engaged in creating eco-friendly Ganeshas.

Our photographer Vishwanath travelled from Girgaum to to Dahisar, taking pictures, talking to some of them, and came away with the impression that the future of the artist was in safe hands indeed.

Mumbai will have thousands of Ganeshas and every one of them seems to have thousands of devotees. And why not! This is the biggest festival in Mumbai which is practically identified with the elephant god. And never has the city seemed to need him more!

s the city is facing space crunch, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to develop underground markets, along the lines of Connaught Place, the popular underground shopping space in New Delhi. Officials believe this policy will help to make stations and roads in the island city hawkerfree.

Illegal hawkers have swamped footpaths, roads, railway stations areas and other open spaces in the city, causing huge inconvenience to commuters.

Price per square foot space in Mumbai is the highest in the south Asia, and empty spaces in the city have been already consumed, except for gardens, recreation grounds and playgrounds which are guarded by stringent rules

laid by the courts.

Councillor Prakash Gangadhare put forward this proposal in the BMC and it would come up for discussion in the general body meeting of the corporation this month. He said, “Once upon a time, Mumbai was famous as industrial city, however, over a period of time, industry is shifting to other states. To retain past glory, the city needs to be business friendly, and provide space for business. Now space can be made only by developing underground markets under the open

spaces.”

The BMC has a few gardens in its possession and most of them are in the island city. These can give space for construction of underground markets. However, the suburbs have hardly few gardens or open spaces.

So this policy would not help in the crowded suburbs.

Crime Branch entrusted with investigations into collapse of building at Mahim

he probe into the partial collapse of a residential building Altaf Manzil in Mahim was handed over to city’s crime branch on Tuesday informed the state government to Bombay High Court.

However, according to the additional public prosecutor Poornima Kantharia, who told Justice R.P. Sondur-Baldota, that the probe was already transferred from the Mahim police station to crime branch on August 2.

The building had collapsed on June 10 when a part of the four-storeyed building caved in allegedly due to illegal alterations and rains, in which 11 people died.

The investigators would take the statements of the people related to the case as well as of the accused, said police. Also, the police would go through all the related documents of the

building, especially which mentioned the complaint about the illegal construction and alterations made to the building, added police.

Moreover, the report submitted by the BMC officials after receiving the complaints from the residences of the building.

Meanwhile, the court on Tuesday rejected the anticipatory bail application of Digambar Satam, a sub-engineer with the BMC, observing that there was prima facie evidence against him.

Satam and co-accused Praveen Rane, a BMC officer, had visited the building in November 2008 after a

complaint by one of the residents as we;; as advocate Rizwan Merchant pointing out illegal alterations being made in the ground floor.

The duo had submitted a report stating that no unauthorised work was found to have been carried out.

The FIR, which was registered on June 15, had named three sons of the landlord, besides Iqbal Ibrahim, the owner of the shop in the basement on the north side, Sandeep Bafna, the lessee of the shop in the basement on the south side and the officials of G/North Ward including the officials attached to the BMC head quarters.

n a very tragic incident, a constable on duty attached to the Matunga police station, lost his life on Sunday night after falling into the gap between the platform and a train at the Kasara railway station. The cop was taking an accused to hand him over to the Madhya Pradesh police in Raipur.

After he fell and got severely injured including losing his right hand, he called up his partner and told him not to wait, as he would take treatment at a local hospital. However, he died on the way to a hospital in Mulund. Family members allege that he lost his life due to delay in treatment.

When the train halted at Kasara station, Bhandare got down to get water in the heavy rain. As the train started moving, Bhandare, who was a few coaches behind, ran to catch the train but slipped and fell in the gap between the train and the platform. He received serious internal injuries on chest and his right hand got detached.

Bhandare asked the local cops to call his relatives and also informed Shivgan to proceed and handover the accused to MP police.

Narendra, said, “We received a call from the cops at about 12 in the night while the accident occurred at 10.40.

Bhandare was taken to Kasara Hospital then to Shahpur Hospital where Narendra, wife Sangeeta and other relatives had arrived.

He was then driven to Fortis Hospital in Mulund, but died on the way near the Mulund check naka. Narendra said, “Just ten minutes before reaching the hospital, my brother died. The delay cost him his life.”

Senior police inspector Raghvendra Thakur of Matunga police station said, “We will support Bhandare’s family members. It was a very unfortunate incident and he has died on duty, due to intense loss of blood and serious internal bleeding in the chest area.”

‘Minor mineral’

Sand is considered a ‘minor mineral’ under the Indian law, unlike coal, diamonds or gold which are classed as major minerals. The extraction of minor minerals is governed by the state rather than federal laws. ith the forms for the Elementary/Intermediate drawing examinations being dispatched, city schools have set some compulsions on students who want to appear for these drawing exams.

Schools have asked such students to join the school’s drawing classes costing around Rs.2,000. The pupils who deny doing so will not be allowed to appear for the examinations. The Directorate of Maharashtra State Department of Arts has given out forms to schools for registering their students in the Elementary and Intermediate state level drawing examinations. Although the fee for the Elementary examination is Rs.50 and that of Intermediate is Rs.100, schools have begun looting money from their students.

The Elementary and Intermediate Grade Examination is held every year during September in Maharashtra. Only those candidates who pass the Intermediate Drawing and Elementary Grade Exam-

ination are admitted to the specialised higher courses like Commercial Art, Fine Art, and Foundation. But it is not compulsory for other art courses like Fashion Design, Interior Design, and Textile etc. Even some IT and vocational engineering courses give substantial significance to the intermediate exam.

These exams comprise subjects like nature drawing, still life, memory drawing, design, free hand drawing and geometry. Around four lakh students across the state appear for these exams every year.

A student from a Jogeshwari school, who did not wished to be named, said, “My school has made the drawing classes compulsory for students who want to appear for the Elementary and Intermediate examinations.

We are asked to pay a higher amount for the classes whereas the examination fees are quite minimal. I was not allowed to appear for the exams since I did not join the drawing classes.” Another student said, “I was not issued the intermediate form as I did not join the classes. I have already missed the reg-

istrations and have lost my chance to appear for the intermediate exam”. Students also claim that schools have not been providing proper receipts for the payment of these extra fees for the drawing classes.

According to the rules of the Directorate of Maharashtra State Department of Arts, the fees for students outside Maharashtra are Rs.100 and Rs.200 for the Elementary and Intermediate examinations respectively. This year, the Elementary examination will be held on September 25 and 26 and the Intermediate examination will be held on September 27 and 20.

When the ADC spoke to G.B. Dhanokar, Director Maharashtra State Department of Arts, he said, “Till now, no complaints have been received by the department. If such things are happening, students and parents should step ahead and complain about the same. The department will take strict action against schools manipulating the rules. ifteen-year-old Gauri Kamath died at her residence on August 5, late in the evening as she hung herself from a ceiling fan, supposedly out of anxiety regarding her SSC Unit Test examination. The incident has spread panic among parents across the city.

Gauri, who was a student of Sacred Heart High School in Vashi, was in the phase of the year when students are

busy preparing for their boards and striving to achieve high grades. For some like Gauri, the pressure of trying to succeed can become too much to bear.

Police Inspector (crime) Rajesh Dewre, Vashi Police Station commented, “Parents should act as guides for their children and encourage them to face the challenges coming their way. Students should also share their problems with the family members in case of any difficulty or pressure.”

JOURNALISTS who cover the ministry of external affairs were surprised at the way they were shooed away and deprived of tea after a function at the MEA’s new home, Jawaharlal Nehru Bhavan. Since the function was outgoing foreign secretary Ranjan Mathai’s last official do before handing over charge the next day, MEA’s entire top brass was present, including the incoming boss, Sujatha Singh.

Journalists were invited for the function but as soon as it ended, they were unceremoniously packed off and denied entry to the tea hall. It would have been a great opportunity for an informal interaction. But clearly, the MEA didn’t want journalists nosing around.

That is what is happening with Manmohan Singh. Mulayam Singh’s nephew, Ram Gopal Yadav, stated that the Centre can withdraw all the IAS cadre officers from Uttar Pradesh. What a farce! The press and the electronic media have dutifully conveyed the same to people as though it was a breaking news.

When Ram Gopal Yadav announced this, what he might have meant is they have got enough goondas and they will take care of the Jungle Raj. Why should they bother? The way Azam Khan, shamelessly , said ‘Ram naam ka loot, ho sake to loot lo’. What a shame! This is the quality of ministers we have today. What better can be expected from such thugs?

Durga Shakti, being young and enthusiastic, might have thought of doing her duty religiously. That poor girl might not be knowing that it is UP and being run by Raja Bhaiyyas, Mulayams, Mayavatis and Azam Khans. Akhilesh is a classic example to show that an education will not change the culture of a man. This chip of the old block, despite being literate (need not be educated), remains the same Yadav like his father and uncles. Being a young man, it was his duty to protect and defend Durga Shakti to the hilt. But, being as shameless as shame itself, he defended her suspension. It is unpardonable. But, alas! It is Uttar Pradesh.

The decision of the state cabinet to increase the sanctioned strength of the State police force by 60,000 is laudable considering that all types of crimes against women from chain snatching to acid attacks have been on the increase in the city. Along with this, the living conditions of the policemen also need to be improved since the facilities available at the police lines leave a lot to be desired and recently the wives of the cops took out a morcha to draw attention to these. The work schedule of the cops too needs to be looked into realistically. From the number of suicides among policemen, it is clear that quite a few of

IT was very informative to read the editorial dated August 5, ‘A coverup operation by Akhilesh fails’ and learn about the real reason behind the suspension of IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal.

It is sad that an honest officer is being targeted in a most shameful and cowardly manner on a charge which is false and concocted and far away from the reality. More saddening is the fact that the Hon’ble Chief Minister appears to have been influenced by members of the powerful sand mining lobby and instead of supporting and standing by the brave lady chose to sheepishly buckle to the pressure.

In spite of the Chairperson of UPA Madam Sonia Gandhi writing to Hon’ble Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in this regard, Durga Nagpal’s suspension continues and this sets a bad signal to all the honest officials in India, be it in the Executive, Legislature or Judiciary—three organs of Government—as envisaged under the Constitution of India that their political masters succumb to the pressures of powerful lobbyists and leave them high and dry to face the music for their honest act.

One should remember Mahatma Gandhi his teachings and ideals and tread the path to protest them are working under tremendous stress. It was also good to read the statement of the DGP Sanjeev Dayal that increasing the number of convictions is his top priority. For this, more forensic laboratories and cyber cells will indeed be required. Forensic science and criminology are not taught in all the universities and therefore more colleges have to be encouraged to introduce this important course. One hopes that the government will implement this decision expeditiously and extend the benefits to the citizens of Mumbai.

WE have heard of notes and even entire files disappear from government offices whenever a scam surfaces, but now we have a strange story of additional notes. Not just bits of paper but of value—up to Rs.1,000. It appears that the RBI has been receiving notes in excess of what is printed! Where did the additional notes come from? The event was a basic panel discussion that included some big names from the industry giving their insight to a hall-full of MBA aspirants about what exactly is expected from them when they bag management jobs. The panel consisted of R Mukundan (MD of Tata Chemicals), Arun Nanda (Director of Mahindra Ltd), Anuj Puri (Chairman of Jones Lang LaSalle), Ninad Karpe (CEO Aptech) and Nilay Yagnik (Chairman of NMIMS School of Business Management). Apart from emphasizing on the general aspects of what a management student should aspire to be or do, the panelists kept the talk light hearted, some of who openly joked with each other which in turn kept the students eager and interested in what they had to say.

did my BCom from HR College. Travel has always been a passion for me. I have been backpacking and traveling across India and the globe ever since I can remember. Initially my wife and I started helping our friends with their planning and travelling and we soon realized we were doing fine. So we decided to take it up professionally. I have traveled through various countries and continents, stayed in different kinds of places, sampled a variety of local cuisines and met people from various corners of the world.

That is when I honed my skills as a globe trekker.

I now want others to share my dream of making travel exciting. I want to add ‘experience’ into travel and not just do the run-off-the-mill stuff, be it any destination across the world. As the company’s vision says, I want to take like-minded people ‘off the beaten path’.

Initially, the biggest investment I have had to make was time – for travelling the world over to gather the much-needed experience that would one day serve as the foundation of The Backpacker Co. Later, there were more tangible investments such as buying a PC. As we grew, we rented out an office, hired more people which required an initial investment of Rs. 2,00,000 plus.

The travel industry is constantly evolving, so one never really stops to learn. But to be able to function at a professional level, it can take anything from 3-5 years of training along with hands-on experience.

Freshers can earn anything between Rs.10-12K, depending on their capability. Since this is a start-up, it is difficult to pay industry-level salaries. What is important though is that individuals have the passion and the commitment to persevere. They need to know where they want to reach and see themselves in the next 5-10 years. Professionals in the industry can get the opportunity to travel, explore new places, and meet like-minded people. These two things always help in opening up the mind and giving us a new perspective on things.

Since the travel industry is constantly evolving, there are many aspects and nuances that a professional in this industry needs to learn and often relearn. Also, the industry is one of the first few to be affected from an economical slowdown. So we always have to be prepared, and in fact predict any sudden setback that the industry might experience.

My one and only advice to youngsters who want to take up a profession in travel and build a career here is to have passion. This is a fun profession to have but it requires a 24x7 focus. Clients demand a hands-on service and there is no switch-off. So if clients call you even at 3am in the morning, you need to answer. You have to know the places that you are selling to your clients; therefore it is important to visit and experience first-hand these places yourself to better interpret and share information about these places with your clients or customers. One must also read up about the various places you are trying to sell and get as much information as possible.

n industry survey conducted recently has found that one in four employees in India are likely to switch jobs this year, making it a country with the highest rate of attrition in the world.

For a booming market looking to increase productivity and quality, this comes as a rattling piece of news and might have forced employers across the board to analyze the reasons for this disturbing trend.

The survey conducted by global human resource and management consultancy major Hay Group in association with the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr), found that India is expected to lead the region in turnover rates at 26.9 per cent (in the organised sector) in 2013 — the highest attrition rate globally; this figure is expected to go up further in 2014 to stand at 27.5 per cent.

It is a no-brainer that in order to retain employees, organizations must give a serious thought to what is driving employee disenchantment and what would drive employee commitment.

Over the last decade Indian industries have seen explosive growth. With this growth some new challenges in maintaining and handling talent have risen. Today’s managers are dealing with a dynamic and ambitious new generation. The gap between older established workforce and the ambitious upcoming youth is widening.

We have observed that there is a clear distinction between how R & R is handled in the new economy visa-vis the old economy companies. Companies in the new emerging sectors like IT/ITES/Retail have been early adaptors to a more structured approach to R & R. While the companies in the more traditional sectors like manufacturing,, public sector etc are yet to adapt themselves to a work flow driven structured process.

The good news all across – the new and the old economy companies, is that the need for a good R & R process is no longer debated. What is being debated and discussed more today are questions related to ‘how’ and ‘when’.

P Mahesha, Founder and director of Masterminds International, an organization that deals in mind management techniques, is usually a busy man, hopping from city to city and holding his workshops, where, for participants ranging from children to adults, he teaches how memory power can actually be boosted.

Unfailingly, he is a hit with audiences, some of his feats taking on the aura of a trick. Yet, he says, we all have the capacity to remember much more than we think we do.

“People think I was born with gifts of memory and concentration. I learnt them the hard way and so many others can too. You need to strive to reach maximum potential.

What never fails to astonish me is that we are born with this amazing gift which God has given to each one of us called the brain. But we hardly ever realize the full capacity of this tool. We only use a tiny fraction of its capabilities in our lifetime,” he says.

A pioneer in the field of creative memory and mind management, he is living proof of the effectiveness of his techniques; having been a rank holder and gold medal winner for several outstanding academic achievements. He is the proud recipient of Memory Wizard Award in the Memory Asiad competition, 2001 and can recall numbers, words, abstract image, binary codes, and has always been wowing people with his skills of recollection.

He uses a number of techniques that can help to increase concentration. Ambidexterity is one such tool; it balances both sides or hemi-

“You can increase your speed from between 300 to 1,500 words a minute. It’s rather like learning to ride a bicycle; you never forget. What you’re doing is increasing your consciousness to a higher state.”

And anyone can learn ambidexterity. “I did a programme in Italy some time back about how we could teach a student to balance both his hemispheres through simple techniques like ambidexterity and mind mapping - a technique where you use images, colours and symbols. It’s a technique that was used by Leonardo Da Vinci and it’s very powerful. It’s a prescribed technique in many European universities.”

“If you have good concentration, your productivity increases. It has been scientifically proven that your memory will also improve because memory and concentration go hand in hand. Whenever a student asks me how to increase his or her memory I tell them that their problem is not memory, but concentration. If they increase their concentration, their memory will follow,” he concludes.

The first superhero however, to get worldwide recognition and really launch the superhero era so to speak was when the Superman comic was released by DC comics in 1932. The idea of a man being able to fly and not be harmed by bullets really clicked with the crowd. Comics were originally meant to provide reading material to kids with the help of pictures so that the child would have a perfect idea of what the author was trying to portray. However, these comic books became extremely popular even with the youth and the working men and women because of the simple fact that they provided a light and entertaining read. These superheroes became the perfect role models who everyone wanted to be like.

They resembled the perfect man or as near to it as one’s imagination would allow.

Today, the superhero industry is one of the largest in the entertainment field with at least five to six superhero movies releasing every year. The convention on the discussion of comic books, popularly known as Comic con is held in most of the major cities throughout the world where all the superhero enthusiasts come and discuss their favorite super-

heroes and enact themes and scenes from their favorite movies. X-men, Batman, Thor, Captain America, Green Lantern and Superman are just few of the popular superheroes, all of whom have certain powers, which they were either born with or gained through some freak situation or accident.

A very hot topic of debate amongst comic lovers and superhero enthusiasts is who is the best superhero? The current most popular superhero as such is Iron Man, who has over 10 million likes on Facebook and a huge following on Twitter. However, this balance of power keeps on changing as and when the superhero’s new movies and comics are released.

A hero in our minds is a person who has done a great thing or has accomplished a lot in his life. A superhero is a hero exponentially multiplied to get something like Superman and Batman.

Many superheroes start out their lives as ordinary men leading ordinary lives who hope to do something very different in our lives, which are then dramatically changed by some accident or circumstances, or most of the times they are simply chosen by an elite power to carry out some necessary duties for which they are given special powers.

Apart from the superheroes themselves, the villains whom they face-off against also gain some popularity due to some killer dialogues and a budding trend of supporting the underdog in most cases. Also, it has now been accepted that a superhero requires a super villain. Without a nemesis, these superheroes do not have an identity. The faceoff between Batman and Joker for example is one of the most popular fights in the history of the entertainment industry.

The idea of who exactly qualifies to be a superhero has also changed a lot since

the advent of Superman in the 1930s.

Earlier a superhero fought the bad guy, saved his girl and won the support of the people. Now, however Hulk, who is a humongous angry monster that evolves from a man when he is very angry also qualifies as a superhero. Iron Man technically is a guy with an awesome suit. It is the suit that does all the work but yet he is considered as a prime example of a superhero, although he possesses several wrong habits.

The concept of superheroes has been around for quite a while and will still be around. They provide us with inspiration, awe and sometimes jut some plain old much needed entertainment.

Superheroes are a product of our imagination brought to life through comic books and movies. They are people who we want to be but we know that we will never be able to be. After all they are not called superheroes for nothing?

Over 11 lakh abortions in a year: Govt EW DELHI: A total of 11.06 lakh abortions were recorded in the country in 2008-09, according to government data.

Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Tuesday said data on the numbers of unsafe abortions in the country is not available in the Central Health Management and Information System of National Rural Health Mission or national level surveys. "As per Registrar General of India- Sample Registration System (RGI SRS) (2001-03), 8 per cent of maternal deaths in the country are attributed to 'abortions'.

"Further, as per WHO global and regional estimates 2008, on unsafe abortion, 13 per cent of maternal deaths are attributed to unsafe

CNG prices to jump by `11.7

EW DELHI: The government decision to double natural gas prices from April next year will translate into a hike of Rs.8.20-Rs 11.72 per kg in CNG rates in cities like Delhi and Mumbai.

The government had in late June decided to price all domestically produced natural gas at an average of global hub rates and cost of imported LNG. Accordingly, gas price is expected to be in the range of US $8.2 to $8.4 per million British thermal unit in April as against current $4.2, reports PTI. "If it is presumed that the city gas distribution entity is operating entirely on domestic gas, the impact of USD 1 per mmBtu increase in price of domestic gas would result in a price hike of Rs 2.93 per kg of CNG," Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Panabaaka Lakshmi said.

While CNG supplier in national capital Indraprastha Gas sources 70 per cent of its needs from domestic fields, Mahanagar Gas Ltd buys almost all of its gas from domestic producers. Also, CNG retailers in Gurgaon and Faridabad source almost all of their gas needs from domestic fields.

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell substantially on Tuesday (August 06, 2013) a net 143.15 points (2.52%) and closed at the 5542 point level. The market opened down with a gap at the 5664 points level and that level itself was the high of the session.

It then declined and turned into a range bound movement until 2.15 p.m. The index then declined sharply and registered the day’s low at the 5521 points level at 2.47 p.m. It then rose marginally and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained below its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 143 points and closed below the psychologically important 5600 points level. Sentiment was extremely bearish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 46 were losers, while just 4 stocks managed to close in the green. All the sectoral indices closed in the red. Substantial selling was witnessed in consumer durables, realty, banking and metal stocks.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 11.24%. This change is moderate and indicates a wide participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was negative. Amongst all the traded stocks, 305 were gainers, 1068 were losers and 318 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has declined in the over-sold zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is below the slow D line (negative if it continues).

RSI Indicator: The RSI fell and crossed below the 30 level and is now declining (negative if it continues).

This is negative and indicates that the bias has shifted towards the sell side of the market.

Further, the index has crossed below two major support levels at the 5636 and 5578 points level. Moreover, the 15 day’s moving average has crossed below the 25 day’s moving average. The index continues to remain below the 5, 15, 25 and 200 day’s moving averages and all the four averages are declining. The velocity parameters too are negatively trended. All these indicate a negative bias and the possibility of a further decline unfolding. Investors are advised to avoid buying at present levels.

Orbit Corporation has been issued a notice of default and loan recovery of Rs.96 crore by LIC Housing Finance Corp. Ltd after the Mumbai-based developer couldn’t pay up the amount even after an extension of six months that ended in March. The company took a loan of Rs.250 crore from LIC, of which it has repaid about Rs.150 crore but didn’t pay up the rest as projects have been held up because of delays in obtaining regulatory permissions, impacting cashflows, Orbit managing director Pujit Aggarwal said yesterday.

The default has led to the loan being declared a non-performing asset. Sales in three of Orbit’s projects in Mumbai—in Kalina, Lower Parel and Andheri, against which the money was borrowed—have been stalled as a result.

Govt Bans E-Series Contracts On NSEL

Government yesterday banned trading in e-series contracts at the National Spot Exchange Ltd (NSEL) as it wants the exchange to first settle about Rs 5,600 crore dues to investors, Consumer Affairs Minister K V Thomas said yesterday. "We have stopped trading in e-series contracts on NSEL. A notification will be issued in a day or two," Food and Consumer Affairs Minister K V Thomas told PTI.

Tata Power Slips Into Rs 114 Crore Q1 Loss

Tata Power today posted a consolidated loss of Rs 114.70 crore in the three months ended June, hurt by a weakening rupee and higher financing costs related to the Mundra project. The company reported a profit after tax of Rs 145.93 crore in the year-ago period. The loss was "mainly due to higher forex loss on realignment of liabilities due to weakening of rupee and higher finance cost related to Mundra project," Tata Power said in a statement. The company's consolidated revenue in the quarter climbed 29 per cent to Rs 9,339.49 crore from Rs 7,253.89 crore.

Govt To Seek Parliament Nod For Rs 1,000 Cr For Mahila Bank

The government yesterday said it will seek Parliament approval for allocation of Rs 1,000 crore for setting Bhartiya Mahila Bank Ltd. "It is proposed to solicit the approval of the Cabinet to include the allocation of Rs 1,000 crore to the Women's Bank in the first Supplementary to be approved in the current Monsoon Session of Parliament," Minister of State for Finance Namo Narain Meena said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

The government today said six Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs), including Indian Oil Technologies and Bihar Drugs, have been closed down in the last 5 years. Govt Announces Food Grains For Open Market Sale

Government of India has decided to allocate 4 lakh tonnes of wheat and 5 lakh tonnes of rice to State Governments/Union Territories for distribution to retail consumers at subsidized rates which are less than the economic cost. This information was given by the Minister of consumer affairs, food and public distribution Prof. K.V. Thomas in a written reply in Lok Sabha yesterday. He said that wheat under the scheme is released at Rs.1500/- per quintal plus freight charges from Ludhiana to the concerned State/UT Capital. Rice under the scheme is released to States/UTs at MSP(Minimum Support Price) derived value of rice based on MSP of common variety of paddy for KMS (Kharif Marketing Season) 2012-13 i.e.

According to the government such retention of dues beyond the due date is an offence liable for prosecution under Section 276B of the Income Tax Act, 1961. The defaulter, if convicted, can be sentenced to Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) for a term which can extend up to seven years. And the government is now seriously thinking of acting strictly with such entities.

The TDS units of Income Tax Department have been taking up prosecution proceedings in suitable cases where TDS has been retained beyond the due date.

It reveals the emerging trends about spending, investing and income patterns of India’s Ultra High Networth Households (ultra HNHs) amidst prolonged economic uncertainty and states that the number of Indian ultra HNHs is estimated to have grown to around 100,900 in 2012-13, and is expected to triple to around 329,000 over the next five years. Consequently, the net worth of ultra HNHs is estimated to surge 4.5 times from an estimated Rs.86 trillion (86,000 billion) in 2012-13, to Rs.380 trillion (380,000 billion) by 2017-18.

However, the economic downturn has caused a change in the ultra HNIs’ perception on spending. But they continue to spend to maintain their lifestyle—thereby ensuring that their non-discretionary spend in the near term won’t be curtailed—they are now exercising greater caution regarding discretionary purchases,” the report said.

In keeping with their flamboyant lifestyle, they are seen spending lavishly on luxury homes, food, clothing, education, travel and family vacations. Purchasing a luxury home is a status symbol for the ultra HNI and he goes to great lengths to en-

sure exclusivity. Nearly 70-75% of wealth is invested in real estate as per the report. Luxury home purchases by ultra HNIs are not confined to India. Driven by globalisation, comparable valuations overseas and investment considerations, more and more ultra HNIs are purchasing luxury properties abroad in places such as Singapore, London and Dubai, it said.

“Real estate investments have always delivered good returns in India, which is indicated by data through all the three editions of the report,” C. Jayaram, Joint Managing Director, Kotak Mahindra Bank. I see this asset class inviting more and more interest in spite of the current slackness in the market,” he said.

Discipline and capital protection continued to be the line on investments. Allocation to asset classes such as debt continued to be significant as well. Traditionally, investment in real estate is seen as medium risk in India but ultra HNIs are increasingly capitalising on opportunities such as distress sales as part of their short-term investments.

However, according to Mukesh Agarwal, President, CRISIL Research, compared to last year, there is more pessimism among ultra HNIs this year about an early economic recovery.

“The caution that appears to be creeping into ultra HNI spending, particularly in discretionary spends should be an added concern,” he said.

Raghuram Rajan Is Next RBI Governor

aghuram Govind Rajan, the country's chief economic advisor to the Finance Ministry, will take up the mantle of governorship of the Reserve Bank of India for a term of three years from Dr. D Subbarao, who will demit office on September 4th this year.

"Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has approved the appointment of Dr. Raghuram Rajan as the Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a term of three years, vice Dr. D. Subbarao upon completion of his (Dr. Subbarao's) tenure," an official release said, yesterday.

Rajan becomes the 23rd governor of the central bank and takes over the job at a time when the country's economy is going through one of its toughest times.

The rupee has plunged to a record low and economy is growing at its slowest pace in a decade.

Off late the rupee has been playing truant and the RBI has trained its guns on speculators by announcing a couple of liquidity tightening steps. Its focus on rupee resulted in a monetary policy that was void of any growth incentives.

The street had been hoping for a rate cut since inflation was seen coming down from its peak levels.

On the other hand, its efforts to clamp down on liquidity had failed to strengthen the currency. Experts say a change of guard would not mean a reversal of policies.

Rajan is an Indian economist

who served as Eric J. Gleacher Distinguished Service Professor of Finance at the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago. Rajan is also a visiting professor for the World Bank, Federal Reserve Board, and Swedish Parliamentary Commission. He formerly served as the president of the American Finance Association and was the chief economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Rajan's previous work with the Indian government includes his helmsmanship of a Planning Commission-appointed committee on financial reforms, and as honorary economic adviser to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

"These are challenging times for the Indian economy and the RBI and government will work together…We don't have a magic wand to make the problems disappear. But absolutely we will deal with them., Rajan said in a statement shortly after the announcement.

W DELHI: “Inspiration comes from different places and different persons”, according to Indian women hockey’s chief coach Neil Hawgood who hoped that the junior eves’ historic feat in the World Cup will inspire the senior men’s team to win the Asia Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia.

The Indian girls created history on Sunday by winning the country’s first-ever bronze medal in the Junior Women Hockey World Cup after pipping England 3-2 on penalties in the third-fourth place play-off match.

“We went back and watched the game and we were quite happy with the way we played (against Australia). We created enough chances.

It was actually a close game than what the scoreline suggest. From there on we were happy with the way we were played.”

The coach observed that Indian women’s team is at par with the rest of the world in the Under-21 level.

“I believe our girls in 3-4 years time will start playing really well. We are actually quite level with the rest of the teams in the Under-21 category. I think the average age of players in the senior teams is about 24-25 and ours is 20-21 so there lies the big difference,” Hawgood said.

EW DELHI: Sports Minister Jitendra Singh was far from impressed as he took stock of India's preparations for next year's Commonwealth and Asian Games in a meeting with SAI officials here and expressed dissatisfaction with the progress made so far.

"The Union Minister of State (I/C) for Youth Affairs and Sports Shri Jitendra Singh held a meeting on August 5 with the officers of SAI to review the preparation for the Commonwealth Games 2014 at Glasgow and Asian Games 2014 at Incheon, Seoul," the Sports Ministry said in a statement.

"During the meeting, Shri Jitendra Singh expressed his dissatisfaction at the fact that only a handful of National Sports Federations had given a detailed training programme for the probable medal winners identified for the games," it added.

Singh gave several directions to the Sports Authority of India officials, including the setting up of a steering committee headed by Sports Secretary P K Deb to oversee the preparations. "The Minister directed that a Chief Coach along with his support staff be appointed for each discipline and their team should be entrusted with the responsibility for coaching of probables," the release said.

"The Minister directed that a Steering Committee headed by Secretary (Sports) be set up and meet every week to review the progress of training sportsperson in each discipline by rotation.

This system would hold till the conclusion of Commonwealth Games. It was also decided that
