Coast Guard rescues cargo ship in Lakshadweep By A Staff Reporter

T

he Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Monday rescued a cargo vessel, with six persons on board, which had lost communication while on its way to Minicoy in Lakshadweep. The ship 'MSV Betheal Jeeva', carrying metal, sand and furniture, had set sail from Beypore port (Kerala) on January 2 for Minicoy, the southernmost atoll of the archipelago of Lakshadweep. However, the vessel neither reached Minicoy nor could any communication be established with the ship, reports PTI. "As soon as the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre Mumbai received the information about the vessel, it activated International Safety Net message to ships transiting through the area for assistance," said an ICG release. The coast guard, meanwhile, launched a Dornier aircraft from Kochi, which located the vessel sailing 40 nautical miles off Minicoy. "After the vessel was located CG ship Rajdoot was dispatched yesterday morning to the area to provide necessary assistance," the release said. After investigation of the vessel it was found that its engine became defective due to a broken engine plate. The CG technical team repaired the engine and the vessel is presently heading towards Minicoy.

A call centre has been set up in Pune, he said adding that on dialling 104 to the call centre, the information regarding blood requirement will be forwarded to the district blood banks. "Within an hour's time in the radius of 40 km, the blood would be transported on motorcycles, which have specially fitted cold storage facility," he said.

Assistant professor had levied charges against female colleague which were not substantiated

By Zuber Ansari

A

fter three years of running around, a 46-year-old professor of the Mumbai University’s Physical Education Department (PED) has got justice after the court recently acquitted her of an offence punishable under the Scheduled caste and Scheduled tribe prevention of atrocity act 1989 filed by her colleague in the university. The case was filed in October 2010 by Assistant Professor Vishambhar Jadhav who used to work in the same department as the acquitted lady. Delivering its judgment, the honorable special court for SC/ST prevention of atrocity act found, ‘’ In fact it has not come on record that it was the accused who has abused the complainant on the day by referring his caste with intention to insult him, and the main witnesses of the prosecution in this respect have not supported case of prose-

cution”. ‘’ Jadhav has framed the incident and he has filed a false complaint on October 26, 2010 in Bandra Kurla Complex Police Station against me over false and fabricated allegations that I had abused him with caste specific expletives, threatened to kill by strangulation, broke his gold chain and snatched away his education documents”. But one of the witnesses, Komal Podar who was said to have witnessed this incident and on whom Jadhav relied on had subsequently recorded her statement in BKC Police that Jadhav and his advocate were threatening and forcing her to give false statement though she was not present and not aware of the incident, Dr. Vasanthi Kadhiravan informed. Sachin Shinde and Nilesh Lohar, Assistant Professors, Department of Physical Education (under suspension) and three more have submitted their affidavit as witnesses

HE’S been the most loved and revered by children, and some elder’s hero for centuries. With his saintly halo and loving generosity, Santa Claus has been part of many a fiction and folklore. He has been embedded into almost every kid’s fantasy. NatAzad Shrivastav | ADC

WE don’t know what to make of this, and whether it should have featured on our DIARY page, but crapping was never so dandy, at Kandivli East that is. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena has gone for a total makeover of the public loo experience by setting up an air-conditioned one, with a large screen LCD TV and a snazzy sofa set to boot. So relieving oneself here comes with some really cool space for prior rest and recreation, in case there is traffic. They call it the waiting room, we call it the 'holding' room. The MNS MLA who has conceived this grand design, offers further intelligence that there will be two security men stationed to guard the toilets round the clock so that women will not be tensed about seeking relief here. So line up, sorry, sit and relax, ladies. He has also stated, “We have also kept in mind students or others who come to the city for a day and can't afford a hotel room where they can freshen up. They can directly come here, get ready, and leave for their interviews or exams.” We are sorely tempted to ask him whether students from UP and Bihar are also welcome, or will they be extended the usual 'courtesy' that the MNS is famous for dishing out to northerners coming for interviews or exams, namely, beating the shit out of them? Light though we may make of it, the party is downright serious and committed. The party chief himself inaugurated the facility on Saturday.

Not a care in the world

urally, then one is angered when this out of the ordinary example is wrongly portrayed for a right cause. This is Traffic Safety Week. We are talking about this big hoarding put up at the Chowpatty – Babulnath junction. While the inten-

tion is to dissuade people from drinking and driving – something we absolutely support – the use of Santa Claus in the back seat; suggesting he has had a good drink and is therefore not driving – his sleigh- is in poor taste and has offended sensibilities.

Further, the Santa figure will always catch a kid’s eye. Won’t they get the message that: It’s ok to drink, but don’t drive after that... Shouldn’t the hoarding be taken off, atleast now since Christmas and New Year is passe!

The catalyst par excellence LITTLE did we know, when he strolled into our office that we would be in for one of the most heartening experiences of our lives. Adil F. Dalal, the Texas based executive coach, keynote speaker and author of path-breaking and award-winning books was at the ADC yesterday for

a 'little session' to see if he could perk up the place. And what an eye-opener it was, as he regaled us with anecdotes and stories to show us how we were all irreversibly connected to the bigger dream and the higher purpose. Before long, everybody was playing only as kids do,

realising that motivation is not just a word, but an achievable feeling, an emotion and a drive that would take all of us up there. He also stressed on the desirability of team work and amidst all the fun and laughter, we realised what going together upwards meant -

the more, the merrier. What's more, we've got autographed copies of his award winning book, The 12 Pillars of Project Excellence: A Lean Approach to Improving Project Results and his latest work, A Legacy Driven Life. The additional motivation came as a bonus.

Our travel addict Art Director, Rajan Ranshoor, has brought forth many an odd eye-catchy picture, but this one at Bhandardara Dam takes the cake, in its reflection of how carefree a man in his slumber can be, rising waters notwithstanding.

T

he Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been declared as the 3rd Most Trusted among Government Corporations in a survey conducted in 16 cities across India. The Mayor of Mumbai, Sunil Prabhu, asserted that this declaration is an acknowledgement of fine civil services rendered by the BMC to the residents of Mumbai. The Mayor further asserted that this has been achieved due to the confidence shown in the BJP-Shiv Sena combine for the last 15 years, for having implemented development projects for the Mumbai. For this success, efforts of officers & employees of the BMC have the lion’s share. The Mayor was talking to reporters last Friday during a Press Meet at the Civic Headquarters, called to announce the result of “The Brand Trust Report, India Study – 2013” conducted by the TRA (Trust Research Advisory). The report is the third edition and lists 1,100 of India’s Most Trusted Brands divided into 211 categories. This report is the result of all-round preliminary findings on 61 components of Brand Trust Matrix, a proprietary model of the TRA. The research is the most detailed study at a global level and was conducted with the help of 2,505 respondents across 16 cities. Thirteen thousand hours, thirty lakh data-points and nineteen thousand brands were involved.

TRA, a part of the Comniscient Group, was established in 2008 with the aim to understand universally and apply trust easily. The organization focuses on research, publishing, trust introspection and licensing. Committed to creating metrics for efficient resource allocation for brands spends, the TRA owns global copyrights for the Brand Trust Metric.

After selecting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation as Third on the national level, the CEO of TRA, N. Chandramouli, said “The Brand Trust Report, India Study 2013, is the third edition in this series and the only one of its kind across the world. The achievement of the BMC in this report shows the financial and social stature of Mumbai in India."

We have to take lectures in computer labs. It’s difficult to manage 300 students in one classroom of 30 students”. A similar issue had been reported by ADC earlier wherein students pursuing Masters of Physical Education had their classrooms in gymnasium. Dr. Naresh Chandra, PVC, MU said, “We have already been working on this issue and it will be addressed as soon as possible”.

The senior Congress leader was speaking after unveiling a bust of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar in Kandivli. These were the first public comments by Shinde, who is among the former chief ministers of Maharashtra credited with ‘political patronage’ by the judicial commission, which probed the Adarsh scam. The Maharashtra government had, on December 20, rejected the report of the judicial commission of inquiry on the Adarsh scam, tabled in the Legislative Assembly. However, after Rahul Gandhi's intervention the government this month decided to partially implement the panel's recommendations, which the opposition has alleged, favours politicians while putting the onus only on bureaucrats. The report of the twomember commission headed by retired High Court judge J.A. Patil indicted several politicians including four former Chief Ministers -- Ashok Chavan, late Vilasrao Deshmukh, Sushilkumar Shinde and Shivajirao Nilangekar Patil -- for "blatant violations" of statutory provisions.

19-year-old girl committed suicide by setting herself ablaze at her residence in the Valmiki Nagar slums in Khar on Monday morning. Roshan Purbiya poured kerosene on her body and set herself ablaze in a room adjacent to where her parents were sitting in their house. She was rushed to the Bhabha Hospital where she succumbed to burn injuries by 2 pm. Disturbed by to the tragedy, Roshan’s father Pururshottam, 46, jumped in front of a running train between Khar and Sanatacruz

railway stations. Cops said that the victim while setting her ablaze was shouting that she was fed up of life and did not wanted to live anymore. However, her mother and three brothers have not provided any reason for her death. Shockingly, while the cops visited the hospital, her father Purushottam, who was devastated by his daughter's death, went to the railway tracks and jumped in front of a train. Police said that the two were close to each other and poverty could be the reason for the girl having killed herself.

FIRST NSEL CHARGESHEET SUBMITTED By Neel Shah

T

he Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai’s crime branch on Monday submitted its first chargesheet of 9,000 pages in connection with the National Spot Exchange (NSEL) Ltd’s 5, 600 crore payment crisis scam. The chargesheet mentions the names of the five accused, namely Amit Mukherjee, Jay B, Anjani Sinha, Nilesh Patel and Arunkumar Sharma. Shockingly, the names of the main accused Jignesh Shah (Vice Chairman of Financial Technologies and the promoter of NSEL) as well as of his trusted aides Joseph Massey (MD of MCX-SX) and Shreekant Javalgekar (MD of MCX) have no mention in the chargesheet. Talking to the ADC, Himanshu Roy, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) said, “The remaining accused will be chargesheeted in the future, in the yet to be filed supplementary chargesheets.” Talking about the reason behind submitting the chargesheet within the stipulated timeframe of 90 days after registering the FIR, Roy said, “As the five accused are in custody, we wanted to deny them the right to apply for bail in the court.” Hitherto, the EOW has attached the assets and properties of the accused, which amounts to nearly Rs. 4, 450 crore, in which around 5 per cent cash was seized. This cash has been handed over to the victims of the NSEL scam through appropriate legal procedures. “The remaining money recovered will be handed over to the victims after appropriate legal procedures, as the

amount will only be fetched from the attached assets and properties of the accused,” said Roy. “The voluminous chargesheet included the list of attached properties of all the accused including the five arrested accused, the frozen bank account details, the information of physical stock available in the warehouses and the statements of 297 witnesses”, informed Addl. CP (EOW) Rajvardhan Sinha. “The chargesheet has also throws light on the modus operandi of the crime, how the management was handin-glove with the defaulters, how certain borrowing companies appointed dummy directors and the manipulation of books by various companies”, added Sinha. The value of the over 200 attached properties of all the accused, including of those who were not arrested, and money lying in the 322 frozen bank accounts is collectively valued at a total of Rs. 4,500 crore, which is 80 per cent of the scam value said the police. Balsing Rajput DCP (EOW) clarified that the other accused who are not yet arrested in the case, are turning up for the questioning as and when required. "Nobody is untraceable and this is the reason why we did not mention anybody as wanted accused in the first chargesheet filed on Monday," added Rajput. Meanwhile, the investigators hitherto have issued 74 lookout notices against the accused in the NSEL scam. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

ICICI Bank employee held for fraud CITY

W

ith the arrest of three people, including a bank employee, the Mumbai police busted a racket in which the accused illegally withdrew Rs. 49 lakh from a Chandigarh based NRI’s bank account. The accused, identified as Mahendra Gurav, Balu Gatte and Rajesh Jamkar, were arrested on Saturday by police personnel from the Matunga police station. “Gurav, an employee of ICICI bank, fraudulently stole the cheque book of Govind Kaur, who has an account in ICICI Bank’s Chandigarh branch”, said DCP Datta Karale. Subsequently, Gurav signed the cheques and by forging Kaur’s signature, withdrew a total of Rs. 49 lakh from her account, said the police. Gurav ran out of luck when the branch office at Chandigarh suspected that some-

Woman held for running escort service in Rozlyn Khan’s name By Zuber Ansari

A

woman has been arrested by the Goregaon Police on Sunday for allegedly running an escort service in the name of Bollywood model Rozlyn Khan. Fed up with the repeated requests on her Twitter and Facebook accounts from unknown people asking her to have sex with them and enquiring about her for a night, Khan filed a written complaint against the website which has been using her picture, with

the Additional Commissioner of Police (North) Sunil Paraskar 15 days ago, but due to an increased work load the woman was arrested only on Sunday. Interestingly, the accused looks similar to Rozyln Khan and taking advantage of this, she created a fake website called rozlynkhanescort.com by using the model’s picture leading people to believe that Khan herself had created the website. This came to light when Khan began receiving mes-

sages from her friends and relatives asking her about the website. Things got worse when unknown people began asking her for her rates and services. When the messages got worse, Khan filed a complaint with Paraskar asking him to block the website mentioned in the messages. Paraskar then asked the Goregaon Police to look into the matter and submit the report. The Goregaon Police formed a team under the guid-

Vijay, who is recuperating at the Rajawadi Hospital said that he and his colleagues were coming to Sion to drop Saurabh, but Vikas lost control while overtaking a private vehicle and rammed into a nearby tree, broke past the divider and then hit a wall of the service road. "We work at Meluha The Fern Hotel in Hiranandani, Powai after completing our shifts we went on a drive as it

was Vikas’s birthday. We left the hotel at around 3:45 am for Sion and were supposed to drop Sunny at his residence in Kalbadevi. I left my motorbike at the hotel because Vikas was going to drop me back to Powai as I stay near by. Vikas was speeding and lost control when he tried to overtake a car from his left side at around 4:30 am. He suddenly applied the brakes and the car rolled on the road

then went onto the service road and crashed into the wall. For some time, I lost consciousness, but was rescued by passersby. I have fractured my hands. We tried to rescue Vikas and Saurabh, but failed to do so,” said Vijay Kamble. Sunny who suffered severe injuries to his back was later shifted to Bombay Hospital. “We have booked Vikas, the car is registered in his uncle’s name. We have registered the

ance of a lady police inspector and contacted the website by posing as decoy customers. The woman agreed and asked them to meet her near a plush hotel. As per her directions, the police reached the spot and arrested her. Sources from Goregaon police station stated that though the main accused has been arrested, two others are absconding. The accused has been produced before the court and remanded to police custody. case because the occupants said that he was speeding and driving negligently,” said Mahipat Indalkar, senior inspector of Vikhroli police. “This is the third fatal accident on the Ghatkopar to Airoli Bridge stretch. The drivers should be very careful because people speed on the straight roads.” Vikas and Saurabh worker as Assistant Stewards and joined the hotel three months ago after completing their degree in hotel management. Vijay and Sunny were working there for the past three years. Vijay works as a butler, while Sunny is a Senior Captain.

By Khushboo Panjabi

T

he main political players of Maharashtra – the Congress-NCP alliance and BJP-Shiv Sena combine – bracing for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and the state assembly polls have to face a new competitor, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which has decided to change the electoral board completely. Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP has set up its units in 34 districts of Maharashtra and is trying

to penetrate deeper into taluka level as committees are getting set up at talukas as well as polling booth level. Mayank Gandhi while talking to the media yesterday said, “There are a lot of people who are quitting their jobs in order to join the party”. AAP has already got more than one lakh members. Gandhi also said that leaders who want to join the party for the sake of tickets or perks, will not be entertained as AAP is going to fight for justice and not the

benefits of political leaders. However, the Muslim community from Uttar Pradesh as part of the National Movement for Social Justice for good governance and equal opportunities were seen supporting the AAP yesterday in the presence of Professor Maulana Salman Sayyed Husaini Nadwi Chairman Ekta Manch of 26 political parties federation Lucknow, UP whereas the party is yet to decide on the number of candidates it would field in

the Lok Sabha polls from Uttar Pradesh. Gandhi said, “If we get good candidates from the 11 per cent Muslims we will welcome them and make sure that AAP takes all the decisions in a team effort”. AAP, with its interior comprising Anna Hazare’s India Against Corruption movement’s volunteers has a potential support base in the state not new to aggressive social activism, courtesy the Gandhian. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

No panic in BJP over AAP entry in poll fray By Prashant Hamine

S

tate BJP president Devendra Fadnavis yesterday stated that there was no panic in the party over the entry of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) into the state election scene. Speaking to newspersons here at the Mumbai party office, he clarified that in the Delhi assembly polls, the AAP had dented the Congress’ vote bank, while the BJP managed to retain its own. Replying to queries over seat sharing talks with the Shiv Sena, he ruled out the possibility of altering the 26 seats for the BJP and 22 seats for the Sena formula for the Lok Sabha seats. He said that the people had accepted and lent their support to its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. The state BJP president stated that the people feel that Modi can usher in change in the system. Fadnavis argued that the traditional votes of the BJP will not split on account of the entry of the AAP in the state election scene. Replying to queries over the AAP deciding to target NCP ministers over corruption charges, he said that the party will campaign on a positive agenda. Talking about the alleged involvement of party RS MP Abhay Sanchetti in the

Adarsh scam, Fadnavis stated that the party favoured action against those found guilty, irrespective of who they are. He added that against this backdrop, the Congress-NCP cannot hide from its role in the Adarsh scam. The state party president stated that the party plans to move the High Court seeking the prosecution of the former Congress chief minister for his role in the scam. Fadnavis stated that as public servants under the provisions of the IPC, chief ministers are liable to face action for any wrongful public gain or loss. He earlier announced the party’s action plan to gear up its election machinery in the state. Between January 10 and February 26 the party will be holding conclaves of its booth level workers in all the 48 Lok Sabha constituencies. Besides this, between February 11 and February 18, party cadres will undertake the ‘Modi for PM’ door-todoor campaign in which voters will be asked to donate one currency note in lieu of their vote in a bid to connect them with the party. The party will also seek to enroll party volunteers between the ages of 18 and 25 years. The party will also undertake agitations on issues like power price hike, water, farmers’ issues, jobs and other issues.

Ponder awhile... “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” — Helen Keller

Arvind Kejriwal’s national ambition

B

Y no stretch of the imagination can it be said that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has any chance of making it in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections which begins on April 16. To suggest that the AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal can organise the poll campaign throughout the country within such a short time would be quite hilarious. The party does not exist anywhere at present except in New Delhi. He could campaign in a small state like New Delhi and win. The New Delhi victory appears to have made Arvind Kejriwal overconfident. He has stated that he does not want to become the prime minister. Later on, he stated that he would not contest in the 2014 polls. His followers, however, were quite disappointed and told him he should become the prime minister. Arvind Kejriwal said his followers loved him and wanted to become prime minister. It is quite pathetic the AAP folks think that if they contest the national poll, they will win. In New Delhi, they were pitted against the ‘corrupt’ and authoritarian Congress which was living in an ivory tower and was totally oblivious of the daily hardships of the people. The AAP got all the poll space it needed, thanks to decimation of the Congress. It could not beat the BJP which, however, got the maximum number of votes in New Delhi elections. Whereas in the ensuing national election, the AAP is pitted against not only the BJP and the Congress, but also powerful and popular regional parties. And success there is not going to be that easy. Take for instance, the assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh which will be held in April-May. The Congress has become unpopular there. However, there are two other parties – the YSR Congress of Jaganmohan Reddy and Telugu Desam of Chandrababu Naidu. Jaganmohan attracts people’s huge attention in the state. The AAP, if it contests from Andhra Pradesh, may win at the most two or three seats from the state. The question of AAP winning majority in the Lok Sabha elections does not arise at all. In many a states, it faces formidable and popular opponents.

ESPITE the moral edge that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) movement has given to politics, a 16-member team of legislators from the Congress-ruled Karnataka in the south were determined to tour a few South American countries at government expense. It is the intervention of Congress-vice-president Rahul Gandhi, a reinvigorated person after the drubbing the party received in Rajasthan and Delhi elections, that they finally buried the trip, which was a joy ride, from the tax payers’ money. The most shocking aspect, however, is that the members going abroad were from the State Estimates Committee, entrusted with the task of saving superfluous expenditure. Representatives of both the Congress and the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) constituted a team for the proposed tour. The BJP members developed sudden cold feet when some in the media criticised the junkets. The Congressmen caved in after Rahul Gandhi pointed out that the expense of Rs.16 crore was a waste when 60 districts of the state faced drought and when more than 200 farmers had committed suicide.

The political parties normally distributed the “study tours” among themselves. It is flabbergasting that the Language Committee members, including persons other than MPs, go to England and America every year to assess the spread of Hindi. In fact, a phoren trip is as much a craze in India as in Pakistan and Bangladesh. The legislators there also go abroad on one pretext or the other. Whether it is a hangover of the 150-year colonial rule of the British or part of thoughtless expenditure of the burgeoning middle class is difficult to say. Probably, both

minister Jawaharlal Nehru was so shocked by the presence of secretaries to the government at parties of third secretaries in foreign missions that he issued a circular to instruct that the top officials should respond to invitations of only foreign officials of equivalent status. As days went by, the violations of the circular increased. Today it is free, for all. Invitations are sought even by MPs. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should issue a circular on the lines Nehru had done. But I have lost hope after seeing the manner in which the Government of India has suffered humiliation at the hands of the State Department. Devyani Khorbragade was handcuffed and put in jail to share the cell with criminals. Secretary of State John Kerry has refused to tender an apology on the incident. It has now been found that she enjoyed full diplomatic immunity when she was arrested.

Arrogrance of power

BETWEEN THE LINES

‘Non-fear is the base for true happiness’ W

E talked a little bit about non-fear. The Buddha knows that there is fear in each one of us. That is why he urges us to touch our fear, to embrace it. Our fear of loneliness, our fear of being abandoned, our fear of growing old, our fear of dying, our fear of being sick, and so on. You have learned that every time we embrace our fear, it will lose some of its strength; otherwise, the blocks of fear will continue to be strong in the depths of our consciousness and continue to shape our behavior. Non-fear is the true base for true happiness. We have been learning about dana, giving, generosity, and non-fear is the kind of gift that is considered to be the best, the most precious. If you can offer non-fear to someone, you offer the best kind of gift. The people who are dying may be very fearful. If you have non-fear with you, you sit with him or with her in that difficult moment of his life. You make him die peacefully without fear. This is a great gift. If you are someone who learns how to accompany the dying person, you have to cultivate your non-fear. Because without non-fear, you cannot be your best in order to help him, or help her.

There are three kinds of gifts spoken about in Buddhism. The first gift is piety. It means material gift. You give that in order to relieve the suffering of the people who are poor, who are destitute concerning the problem of housing, of food, of medicine. The second kind of gift is the Dharma. With the Dharma, you can help people to relieve a lot of their suffering. You help people to know how to organize their lives, to do things in such a way that they can bring happiness to themselves and to their

MATTER & SPIRIT families, how to transform their suffering, how to love, and to help other people stop suffering. Finally, the third kind of gift is called nonfear. I would like to tell you the story of a person who lived two thousand six hundred years ago, who was a lay disciple of the Buddha and who practiced giving, generosity, in such a way that he got a lot of happiness. Finally he got himself the gift of non-fear when he died because he died beautifully, peacefully, and his name is Anathapindika.

Anathapindika is one of the early lay disciples of the Buddha. Anathapindika is not his real name. His real name is Sudatta. Anathapindika is the name given to him by the people of his city because he was so generous. He was a businessman. But he wasn't so busy. He had time and energy to bring help to destitute people, the people who are alone. He used a part of his wealth to do the work of giving. It did not seem that he became less rich at all while doing so. He had a lot of friends in the business circle and he was loved by them, quite a lot. He did business with these people and got their trust and continued to help the people in his country a lot. The first time he saw the Buddha was in the Venuvana. Venuvana means the bamboo grove in the kingdom of Magadha. He had a brother-in law living in that city, the city of Rajagaha in the Magadha kingdom. He used to come to that city several times a year to do business. He himself lived in the kingdom of Kosala, north of the Ganges River. He had a family there. The capitol of Kosala is Sravasti. So from time to time, he left Sravasti in order to go to Rajagaha. When he was there, he always stayed at his brother-in-law's home. (To be continued) — Thich Nhat Hanh

THOUGH Narendra Modi was involved in not a single 2002 riot, the Prime Minister in a specially convened press conference on January 3, blamed Modi for it, and addressed Modi as a future disastrous Prime Minister, forgetting very conveniently the 1984 Congressled anti-Sikh riots wherein more than 3,000 Sikhs were massacred brutally by Congress-men. How can he ever forget this anti-Sikh, most cruel, large scale massacre, in spite of being a Sikh himself? Is it so because of his loyalty towards ‘madam’ and her Congress for his own secret reasons? Besides, by the grace of this economist Prime Minister’s Harvard University-based knowledge of economics, all wrong economic policies and reforms, crores of Indian aam aadmis have to face food-inflation. Although the unprecedented scams were generated during the UPA-I period, the information about the scams surfaced and spread across the nation only during the UPA-II regime and hence there was no way the people could have voted UPA to power in 2009 with the knowledge of overt corruption and scams of UPA. A corrupt system

THE hue and cry over Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s five-bedroom flat accommodation and official cars provided to his cabinet colleagues is unwarranted. A lot of emergency meetings are held at odd hours at the Chief Ministers house and he certainly needs a large official residence to entertain the influx of guests to his house due to his position. Also, vehicles for official duty or otherwise is a reasonable perk for elected assembly members and what is wrong with that. The media too should not over publicise such things and instead concentrate on the work that is being done by the AAP sarkar in Delhi. Arvind Kejriwal and his team have been doing great work so far and their popularity can be gauged by the fact that so many famous people are queuing up to join their organisation. People including the media should see the larger picture and not highlight petty benefits like official accommodation and vehicles used for official duties. — S.N. Kabra

THE uproar is quite understandable against the Delhi CM and his colleagues, agreeing to accept official residence, especially on the background of their rejecting the VIP culture and embracing austerity. LETTERS

THE master economist and a gentleman, PM Manmohan Singh has spoken his heart out to the media. India has benefited in myriad ways during the 10-year rule of Manmohan Singh, and perhaps his only shortcoming is that he has not been able to bring to book some corrupt scamsters who have dealt a blow to the nation. His views on Narendra Modi are not far from the truth as India today cannot afford to have fanatic zealots in power as we are looking for financial stability, progress and peace in our country. One hopes that Rahul Gandhi takes the baton from Singh and completes Singh’s unfinished business of rooting out corruption including former chief minister Ashok Chavan who have been found guilty and FIR has been filed against him by the CBI have to pay very heavy political price as the people of the state will not support them in 2014 general elections and reject them totally for looting the public money and betraying the people for their selfish personal gain at the cost of others. — Bhagwan Thadani

AAP facade falls off the CM will not be able to do full justice to the responsibility he has taken upon himself of serving the country diligently and honestly with the co-operation of his team. The bunch of double-distilled corrupt politicians has been a thing of the past. However, times have undergone overall change and so have the demands of survival in every walk of life. Appreciation and understanding of these facts are likely to bring about a change in our perspective. — Arundhati Wajge

Kejriwal’s acceptance of a large flat has been criticised by many terming it as the typical politician behavior. recent past. The aam aadmi having got used to downright corrupt politicians, right from top to bottom without a single exception, the austerity the CM assured in the beginning was indeed a pleasant surprise for the innocent aam aadmi, which raised the expectations of people, who felt assured of at least a corruption-free future. Well, never mind. Psychological adjustments have been the lot of the commoners hitherto. Let’s see the other side of the coin. With the austerity measures like not availing the government residence, official security, etc. let us understand and appreciate that

KEJRIWAL and the AAP leaders should refrain from making promises like refusing security, refusing to stay in government bungalows, refusing government salaries etc. which are the benefits that one is entitled to when one is doing one’s job. There is no shame and harm in accepting honest remuneration and those required to do the job like free phone calls etc. as long as they are utilised in an honest manner. Refusing such benefits initially and then accepting them later as reality dawns that these are necessary to function when in power will give the impression to the electorate that AAP leaders do not stand true to their words and will reduce their credibility. The other political parties also will use this to create a

and communalism. — Altaf H. Ladiwala

AS reported, it is indeed very surprising and shocking that the Prime Minister could whimper and lower very much his dignity, honour and prestige and the post of Prime Minister. It is an open fact that he did this only to pave the way and smoothen it for the entry of Rahul Gandhi and make him a prime ministerial candidate for the forthcoming elections. He took all the blame of total failures of UPA government upon himself thus giving a very clean image to Rahul Gandhi which is more of a dynastic rule in Congress party. The question also arises as to what are the qualifications, merits, experience and credentials of Rahul Gandhi and the answer is none as what is required of a Prime Minister. There is not the slightest doubt that he has been made a sacrificial lamb by his mentor. It was a farewell speech for Dr. Singh. — S.P. Sharma, Mumbai

tremely late realisation by the Congress chair person in respect of the back to back colossal scams that had been committed by the party ministers thereby severely ruining the country’s exchequer and needless to say the very reputation of the party. In fact, the public at large only witnessed the scams and thereafter while looking eagerly forward to what punishment would be given to these tainted ministers, got frustrated for inaction. However, the ministers involved in the scams were interrogated and thereafter imprisoned but none of them remained so for life. — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai

wrong perception of AAP leaders which will affect the chances of the party in future polls and in its fight against corruption as perception is extremely important in public life, especially if one stands for honesty, truthfulness, reliability and trust. — Joseph Mendes

AS was reported in a section of the media a few days ago that there was no ‘Aam Aadmi’ in the socalled AAP in its Mumbai office except the lady reporter who went to have a look inside, the room having been filled with NRIs and pompous ladies ‘draped in costly sarees and reeking of a costlier perfume’. This in fact is the story of the AAP in Delhi too where the catchy term ‘Aam Aadmi’ was used to considerable advantage by the party to woo the voters. The party’s chief, Arvind Kejriwal, holds a B. Tech degree from an IIT and was a Joint Commissioner of Income Tax earlier. He does not come anywhere near the ‘common man’ born out of the brush of R.K. Lakshman. After their initial, laboured display of simplicity, travelling by the metro and all that, they have all started following the beaten track of other politicians, the CM accepting a couple of posh bungalows in central Delhi and the ministers taking the government cars. Manned ATMs to leave banks DEADLY MANJHA poorer by `4,000cr a month: IBA NOTICE

By A Staff Reporter

anks will incur a monthly outgo of Rs.4,000 crore due to additional security requirements at ATMs following the recent Bangalore incident and the only alternative for making operations viable is raising user charges, Indian Banks Association (IBA) said on Monday. "Every ATM will need an additional Rs 40,000 a month on security. There are over 1 lakh ATMs which

will need the upgrade, so the monthly outgo for the industry will increase by at least Rs 4,000 crore," IBA chief executive M V Tanksale told PTI. Some of the 1.4 lakh ATMs are already manned. IBA is the umbrella body of lenders. He said banks have already resorted to activities like shutting some ATMs in odd-hours, and added IBA has made a representation to RBI for increasing the inter-bank fee from Rs 15 to Rs 18 per transaction and also to scale down the monthly free transactions for a savings bank account holder to five per month. However, when asked if it has also sought some decision from RBI to charge for every transaction, Tanksale said it would be best to leave it to individual bank. The IBA, he stressed, has only recommended a change to include all the transactions, including the own-bank ones, to 5 per month and has not suggested any change to the current practice of making an account holder pay Rs 20 per transaction for the

excess ones. Right now, holders of savings accounts enjoy five free transactions per month in other bank ATMs, while there is no cap on own-bank ATM transactions. Banks net off transactions at the end of the month within themselves and pay Rs 15 per transactions plus taxes to other banks irrespective of whether it was a free transaction or not for the customer. A woman employee of a Corporation Bank in Bangalore was brutally attacked inside an ATM kiosk by an intruder with a machete in November last year. Following the incident, all banks were asked to deploy armed security guards outside all 1.40 lakh ATMs round-the-clock. As this results in additional charges, immediately calls started out for reviewing the charges. When asked if this will prove to be detrimental factor for the banks' ATM expansion plan to increase the total number of ATMs to 2 lakh in the next six months, Tanksale replied in the negative saying all banks are committed to expanding the ATM network. "More and more people need to use ATMs as we need an average footfall of about 200 per ATM per day," he said. Meanwhile, Tanksale said the IBA managing committee has zeroed in on a special branding package design for the 'talking ATMs' to be used by the visually challenged. On the move of banks acting as insurance brokers, Tanksale said the IBA has sought some clarifications from the RBI like the cap on single-company commissions and induction and training of manpower. "We are fine with the arrangement otherwise. However, IBA is not taking a stance of which route to adopt because the banks already have existing relationships with insurers through joint ventures or for distribution tie-ups," he said. On the RBI discussion paper on NPA management which aims at early detection and problem solving to avoid stress, Tanksale said the final norms will be out by January 15 after the IBA working group finalises its comments this week. The RBI's discussion paper is a welcome step, Tanksale said, adding the accelerated provision for doubtful loans is where the banks need more clarity. On the issue of wage revisions, Tanksale said the IBA offered a 5 per cent increase on the pay-slip, which the unions spurned. “We will be meeting the bank employees again on January 29 to solve the issue and arrive at a consensus," he added.

he ban imposed on the sale of Chinese manjha (thread used in flying kite) which is actually made in India, in some parts of Delhi, Bengaluru, Noida and Gujarat has posed a major problem for kite fliers across the city. Makar Sankranti is largely celebrated by flying kites and the Chinese manjha has taken over the market of Bareilly manjha for more than ten years. It has also been banned in Delhi, Kolkata, Punjab, Nashik, Jaipur, Malegaon and Yula. After a High Court order in Jaipur last year, the police have warned traders against trading in Chinese manjha. The Gujarat government would impose a penalty of Rs.10,000 for traders found selling the Chinese manjha, along with imprisonment of one year. A trader in Mumbai said, “The Chinese manjha is in demand because it is cheaper and more effective. It rarely breaks.” While there are traders in Mumbai who are concerned about injuries, especially to birds, Muqeem Amman Khan, a trader in Mumbai said, “I have been selling the Bareilly manjha which is soft and made out of cotton for the past 60 years and I make sure that we sell those manjhas on a major scale every year.” He also added, “We inform the customers about the ill-effects of

using the Chinese manjha, known as nylon manjha, as it contains metal and glass coating. This manjha usually hurts the fingers but people still buy it.” Colonel J.C. Khanna, Secretary of Bombay SPCA said, “Every year, there are cases of birds getting injured, but since the past two years the percentage has come down to 25 per cent. Three years ago, there were hundreds of cases of injuries but now it has declined drastically because of the awareness among people.” In order to avoid bird casualties during kite flying, the following measures have to be taken so that the festival is celebrated in an ecofriendly manner: Strictly avoid glass-coated manjha In densely populated urban areas, kite flying should be organised as a joint social event on open grounds and maidans Avoid kite flying in areas where there are large concentrations of birds in one place such as wetlands or heronries Focus more on the colourful display of kites in the sky rather than ruthless competition in cutting others’ kite strings Focus on other aspects of the festival such as sweets suitable to winter season and celebration of the reviving natural environment post winter. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

Strawberry Special

Strawberry season is here! Rhea Dhanbhoora shows you how to get the most out of this seasonal fruit with four great recipes

strawBerry salad

S

trawberries and cream may be your seasonal go-to recipe, but that’s not all you can do with this fleshy red fruit. Also, the cream isn’t all that healthy anyway. So, we asked chefs and restaurant owners around the city to give us a few great strawberry recipes. Take a look:

low Fat strawBerry cold souP After all the festivities, you’ll love indulging in this low fat strawberry soup. Owner of Saffron Bay, Ravi Sharma helps us out with a recipe that uses low fat yogurt instead of cream, but still tastes as yummy. ingredients 700g strawberries, 500g plain, unflavoured yogurt, ½ cup orange juice, ½ cup white sugar, ½ cup

Nirmal Monteiro, chef at Elbo Room, gives us his recipe for a delectable strawberry salad. ingredients 4 cups of butter lettuce, 1 ½ cups of sliced strawberries, 2 tbsp sliced red onions, 2 tbsp chopped basil, 1 ½ tbsp orange juice, 1 ½ tbsp balsamic vinegar, 1 tbsp olive oil, ¼ tsp black pepper, 2 tbsp chopped Brazil nuts

water, 1/8 tsp ground cardamom method l Blend strawberries in a blender until smooth. Slowly add the yogurt and keep blending. l Pour the strawberry mixture into a large bowl. Add orange juice, sugar, cardamom, water and stir until the mix is blended. l Chill in the fridge for an hour. l Before serving, garnish with a fresh strawberry or a mint leaf. Serve in soup bowls.

method l In a medium bowl, pour lemon juice, balsamic vinegar, extra virgin olive oil and black pepper. l In a large salad bowl, place lettuce, strawberries, red onion and fresh basil. l Garnish with Brazil nuts. l Drizzle the dressing over the salad and serve in a plate.

Balsamic strawBerry & Parma Ham crostinis Head chef of Elbo Room, Nirmal Monteiro, helps you start your meal on a fruity note with these crostinis. ingredients crostini: A drizzle of olive oil, 1 white baguette topping: 150g strawberries, 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar, 1 tsp caster sugar, freshly ground black pepper, 75g cream cheese, 75g parma ham, a few chives to garnish method l Clean the strawberries, remove the hulls, thickly slice them and place them in a small bowl. Sprinkle balsamic vinegar and sugar on top. Allow to marinate for an hour at room temperature and then season with black pepper. l Preheat the oven to 180°C. l Thinly slice the baguette and arrange on a baking sheet. l Drizzle with oil and place in the oven for 15 minutes, turning once, until crisp and golden brown. l Remove and cool on a wire rack. l Arrange the crostinis on a large serving plate. Top each with a little cream cheese, then a slice of Parma ham. l Place a marinated strawberry slice on top and garnish with chives.

strawBerry risotto Gaurish Rangnekar, owner of Vicinia, gives us a deliciously unique twist on risotto with seasonal strawberries. ingredients 450g hulled and diced strawberries, 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar, 2 tbsp olive oil, 2 finely chopped medium onions, 1 deseeded and chopped red chili, ½ tsp salt, 400g risotto rice, 200ml rosé or white wine, 1 tbsp butter, a bunch of finely shredded fresh basil, 50g grated Parmesan method l Marinate the strawberries by tossing them in the balsamic vinegar and letting them macerate for about 30 minutes. l Pour one litre water in a large pan and bring it to a gentle simmer or use boiled water straight from the kettle. (Unlike traditional risotto, you don’t need stock for this recipe). l Heat the olive oil in a wide-bottomed saucepan and add

chopped onions, chili and salt. Lightly stir and then lower the heat. l Cover the pan and allow the onions to sweat for 10-15 minutes. Check to make sure they don’t brown — lower the heat further if you think they might. l When the onions are soft and translucent, add the risotto rice, raise the heat and stir in rosé or white wine. Let the wine bubble and evaporate. l Now, add the strawberries and all their juices. Add enough of the simmering water to just cover the rice. Cook and stir continuously — but gently — until all the water has been absorbed. l Cover again and repeat the process. By the time the second lot of water has been absorbed, the rice should be al dente. Once it’s done, it off the heat. l Stir in butter, shredded basil and half of the grated Parmesan. l Cover and set aside for five minutes. Check the seasoning and serve with the remaining Parmesan.

foul mouTh  The next time you stub your toe, curse out loud like a sailor. Swearing seems to have some powerful painkilling properties. But, bear in mind that the pain-reducing powers of curse words seem to drop if you’ve been using them regularly, when you don’t really need to.

sTREss lEss  Your body’s physical response to stress is similar to your body’s physical response to pain. Thinking about a stressful event has been shown to significantly increase muscle tension in patients with chronic back pain. Try to relax through meditation, by reading a good book, going for a jog or taking a nap.

« 10 wayS to: eaSe your painS

1 ChoKE smoKE  A study of people with back pain found that those who never smoked reported the least discomfort. According to the study, smoking is an identified risk factor for back pain and disc problems and current smokers reported the greatest pain.

naturaLLy The next time your back hurts, watch a hilarious video and roll with laughter. You’ll find that your back pain has actually reduced. Priyanka Singh tells you about lesser known and surprising ways to ease your aches and pain

lovE!  Love! Apart from improving lifespan, lowering stress levels and susceptibility to falling sick, being in love may also help lower pain. A study done in 2011, subjected 17 women in longterm relationships to a short pain shock. Some were allowed to look at photos of their partner during the pain, others were not. The women who were allowed to see their loved one's face described their pain as less intense.

2 movE IT!  If you’re in pain, you might think that exercise would only make the discomfort worse. However, there’s substantial research showing that movement, when done safely and carefully, can actually improve the situation. That’s because exercise is a known endorphin trigger, so moving sends feel-good chemicals throughout the body and lowers pain.

>> Eating at your desk often and the dust settled on your keyboard, could be the reason behind your frequent sneezing fits

3

8

dIsTRACT YouRsElf  Distracting yourself is a simple mind trick in theory, but it can work wonders when it comes to chronic pain, lowering pain intensity more significantly, according to a 2013 study. Plus, a number of ways in which you might attempt to distract yourself have their very own painfighting powers, such as video games, memory challenges and listening to music.

doN’T hIT sNoozE  A small 2012 study found that, in addition to sleep’s benefits to memory, mood and the waistline, spending more time sleeping decreases pain sensitivity. In the study, the people who slept longer were able to hold their fingers on a heat source to test pain tolerance for 25% longer duration than the sleepdeprived participants.

9

A good old RomP  Having sex is the last thing you’d think of when you have a back or joint ache. But, research shows that sexual stimulation and orgasms have been shown to release endorphins, as well as other types of the body’s natural painkillers. It is especially beneficial for migraine sufferers and its effect could last for two days!

lAugh ouT loud  It’s not exactly medicine, but laughter really does have healthpromoting properties. Besides offering stress relief, a hearty belly laugh may also offer some natural pain relief. It’s because laughter triggers a surge of feel-good chemicals in your body called endorphins, which have been shown to act as painkillers.

10

If you’re feeling lightheaded and can’t, for the life of you, figure out why, Rhea Dhanbhoora suggests you take this quiz to find out what’s got you in a dizzy

E

verything was going great and suddenly, the room is spinning and you feel lightheaded. You’ve eaten breakfast, aren’t unwell and are in tip-top shape. So, why is your head in a muddle and why can’t you stand up straight? There are numerous causes for dizziness — from dehydration and vertigo to anxiety and disequilibrium. Take this quiz and find out what’s making your head spin. Your lightheadedness usually occurs when… a) You walk. b) You’re stressed. c) During winter. d) You’re at a height. It is accompanied by… a) Joint pain. b) A heavy feeling in your chest. c) Fatigue and weakness. d) A bad migraine. Do you also feel nauseous? a) No. b) I feel a knot in my throat. c) I feel faintly nauseous. d) I sometimes throw up when I feel too dizzy.

5

Can you walk normally? a) Yes but I feel like I’ll fall if I stand still. b) Yes. c) I’m too tired to walk. d) I can’t walk straight.

BE A PICKY EATER  Following a healthy diet eases pain too. For example, a Mediterranean style diet rich in omega-3, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean meat seems to fend off some inflammation-related pain. Refined grains, too much sugar, saturated fats, trans fats and alcohol contributes to inflammation as well as pain.

Can you eat normally? a) Yes. b) I’m so hungry, I could eat everything in sight. c) I don’t feel hungry at all. d) Not when I feel like this.

6

« quick quiz: are you a sneezer?

Sneezing at your desk? Ever thought that your desk might be responsible for your non-stop sneezing? The dust and germs on your desk might be contributing to your condition. Priyanka Singh helps you find out

spinning around

Is there dust settled between the keys of your keyboard? a. Yes. b. No. Do you clean your desk once a week? a. No. b. Yes. Do you eat at your desk often? a. Yes. b. No.

Are there always used tissues on your desk? a. Yes. b. No. Does your office have a mice problem? a. Yes. b. No. Do you have a lot of files and papers lying around? a. Yes. b. No.

mosTlY As A study by the University of Arizona in 2002 found that the typical desk has hundred times more bacteria per square inch than an office toilet seat! If that’s not disturbing enough, phones and other surfaces are also prime habitats for the viruses that cause colds and flu. Dust on all these surfaces aid multiplying bacteria which are responsible for your cold and sneezing fit. Ask the cleaner to wipe down your desk with a disinfectant regularly. Keep your desk clean and you’ll notice that your cold and sneezing problem will reduce considerably. mosTlY Bs It is certainly not your desk that is contributing to your sneezing problems. While having a completely bacteria free desk is impossible, you are trying your best to keep your desk decontaminated. However, if you have a persistent sneezing problem, make sure that you consult a doctor as it could be because of an underlying allergy.

mosTlY As: loss of BAlANCE  You could be feeling dizzy because you have a loss of balance, also known as disequilibrium. This occurs when you feel unsteady while walking and could be caused by joint and muscle problems, failing vision or even certain medications that you might be taking.

Is this a one-off incident or does it happen all the time? a) It’s happened before. b) Only when I’m worried. c) It occurs more during winter. d) It happens all the time.

mosTlY Bs: ANXIETY If this is the cause of your dizziness, you’re most likely to suffer from panic attacks or even have a disorder such as the fear of open spaces. These can all cause dizziness, but even a slight amount of anxiety from time to time can make you feel light headed.

Do you feel dizzier when you’re out in the sun? a) The weather doesn’t make a difference at all. b) I feel flushed and sweat indoors as well. c) Yes. d) Sometimes.

how do i sTop spinning? W

hile some causes of dizziness may require a visit to your doctor and some medication, here are a few simple ways to stop feeling dizzy when it occurs suddenly: l Sit down, wherever you are and put your head between your knees. More

often than not, this will help you control, reduce or stop feeling dizzy in a few minutes as it helps the blood flow to your brain. l Whether your dizziness is caused by anxiety or not, it can make you feel anxious. Stay calm, take a few deep breaths and breathe slowly to

allow your brain to receive enough oxygen to stave off the dizziness. l Don’t talk too much as it can make you feel more dizzy. Just do everything slowly until the feeling passes. Grab something to drink and make sure you eat. Even if you’re feeling nauseous, hydration is good

mosTlY Cs: ovERhEATINg/ dEhYdRATIoN  You won’t know that you’re dehydrated in winter because you don’t feel thirsty as often. This means that you’ll feel lightheaded when you get dehydrated. Sometimes, too much sun or being too active on a hot day can also cause this, so remember to stay well hydrated during the afternoon. mosTlY ds: vERTIgo When signals are not sent to your brain efficiently enough, you begin to feel a sort of dizziness that is known as vertigo. This can happen for a number of reasons, including a ear disorder or even decreased blood flow through your arteries.

for your body.

l Chew on or drink something that

has ginger as it eases dizziness. l The most important thing to remember is to ask for help if you need it. Don’t wait until the last moment to tell someone that you are feeling unwell.

A heAlthy 2014! If that’s what you want for the New Year, then you need to think again, as broad resolutions like that won’t really do you much good. Get a jumpstart in 2014 by kicking the worst habit first — smoking

S

aying that you will get healthy is on almost everyone’s New Year resolutions list. But, ‘being more healthy’ or ‘exercising more’ or any other broad term won’t really work as resolutions since you can’t really quantify “more”. That’s why we are going to give you a few healthy resolution ideas that you should make.

The more you find out about your body — why you should keep it healthy, what affects your body in a negative or a positive way — the more you’ll realise the importance of staying healthy and the easier it will be to actually do so. So, devote some time every week to read about health and science or subscribe to a health-based publication (we think this supplement is a pretty good place to start).

Have you switched over five different diets in the last year without any visible results? Well, then you’re a victim of following the latest diet craze. We aren’t saying that every new diet that is in the news is ineffective or bad for you, but maintaining a healthy weight and body involves eating right and not just eating in a certain way or at a certain time. With preserved and canned foods getting more and more popular, the likelihood of excess sodium in your body (commonly found in salt and processed foods) is high. Too much sodium can put you at risk of high blood pressure, stroke, heart failure, stomach cancer and kidney stones. Read labels properly and make sure that you aren’t having more than 2,300mg of sodium a day.

Cut an apple and leave it out in the open — it’ll start getting a brown tinge (due to bacteria). Now, cut another apple, dip it in orange juice and you’ll notice that it stays white. Why, you ask? It’s because of the antioxidants that orange is rich in. Now imagine how those antioxidants can benefit your body — need we say anything more? Eat more of foods such as oranges, pomegranates, coffee (in moderation) and of course, green tea.

« Know more: How to sticK to your new year’s resolutions Experience tells us that as soon as you draw up your resolutions, your commitment to them begins to dwindle in a few days. Shirley Mistry tells you how to make your resolutions stick this year 1. Set AchievAble GoAlS The most elementary mistake that most people make is that they set goals that are too far-fetched. Instead of going overboard, start slowly and set goals that are within your reach. The more achievable your goals are, the more likely you are to stick to them. For example, if you want to lose weight this year, don’t start off with thinking that you must go to the gym seven days a week. Begin with a goal of three days per week so that it doesn’t seem like an uphill climb and slowly work your way up.

2. StreAmline It is good to make resolutions that will improve the quality of your life. However, having a long, winding list of over 20 resolutions has never done anyone any good. Streamline your goals and bring the list down to a maximum of two or three resolutions. If you do accomplish these goals before the year ends, tackle a few more or build on your existing goals. For example, if your target was to

lose seven kilos of weight and you have managed to do that, either work towards losing more weight and maintaining the weight loss, or train your focus on another aspect of your life that you would like to improve upon.

3. one At A time Focus on one goal at a time. If you are trying to tackle everything together, chances are you will get too overwhelmed and give up, simply because it is too much of a forced change to cope with. Start by focusing your energies on one resolution and then once you are comfortable with it in your routine, incorporate small steps that will get you started on the next resolution. This gradual approach is bound to give you better results.

4. Get bAck on trAck So, you couldn’t work out for a week because you were working late or you had a stressful time at work. Don’t worry, it happens to us all. What’s more

important however, is to be able to bounce back. A slip in your schedule can very easily mean that you give up all together, but it is important to muster up the will power and get back on track. Slip-ups are a part of life but don’t let them be the reason you couldn’t follow through with your resolutions this year.

5. confide, keep trAck & rewArd You are more likely to stick to your resolutions if you confide in someone as they become a constant source of support and encouragement. It is also wise to keep track of your progress through a journal. Break down your resolution into short-term goals, list them and track your progress. When you achieve a target, reward yourself. However, reward yourself wisely. If your goal is to cut down on drinking, don’t reward yourself with a chilled beer. Instead, treat yourself to a new wallet or pair of shoes you’ve had your eyes on. This will actually make you look forward to achieving your next goal.

>> Before you list your goals for the year, prioritise your resolutions and whittle the list down to only two or three achievable and practical goals

Dream your health D

reams have fascinated many. Even though a lot of assumptions have surrounded dream analysis, with many people calling it as redundant as astrology, some scientists think that dreams can provide vital clues about your health and even give early warnings of medical conditions years before physical symptoms appear. While we don’t dream continuously all night, we have three to four dreams. Also, we only recall the ones in the middle of which we wake up. If we continue sleeping after the dream ends, it is lost forever. From having nightmares to dreaming of being attacked, we tell you what your dreams can reveal about your health.

While the answer to the question, ‘why do we dream?’ is still fiercely debated upon, many scientists have come to a conclusion that your dreams can serve as a peek into your health. Priyanka Singh finds out how

longer. This puts pressure on the valve between the stomach and the gullet which can cause food and stomach acid to splash back up, triggering heartburn. This usually happens in the first hours after falling asleep and is likely to wake you up in the night and therefore, in the dreaming stage. Acid reflux is also more common in those who are overweight as the extra fat can press on the valve and weaken it, making waking early more common.

Dreams of beiNg attackeD Probable causes: Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s Sleep experts suggest that stressful dreams, such as when you’re being attacked or chased, can be an early sign of a brain or nerve disease such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s. People who regularly flail and thrash about while dreaming are known to suffer from a condition called REM sleep behaviour disorder. It’s believed to be caused due to damage in a part of the brain that controls your dreaming ‘safety switch,’ which normally prevents you from acting out in your dreams. This condition causes very violent and disturbing dreams. It is also a strong predictor of diseases such as Alzheimer’s and can sometimes appear up to 10 years before any other symptoms such as memory loss.

Speaking about the relation between beta-blockers and nightmares, Professor Jim Horne told Huffington Post a few months ago that blood pressure pills (beta-blockers) are known for triggering frequent nightmares. These widely used medications help widen blood vessels, but experts believe they may also indirectly alter the balance of certain brain chemicals, which then leads to nightmares. Bad dreams can also be a result of an underlying heart condition. According to a study published in the Netherlands Journal of Medicine, people with an irregular heartbeat experience nightmares three times more, while missiNg a PlaNe or those suffering from chest pain face it ruNNiNg late seven times more. Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness all over the world. Shirley Mistry tells you more about the eye problem

S

>> Discomfort around and in the eyes is a common symptom of chronic glaucoma

tudies show that glaucoma has become one of the leading causes for blindness across the world. This disease, that progresses with invisible symptoms, is estimated to have plagued around 30 lakh people in the country, most of whom are unaware of their condition. In a healthy human, there is a circulation of clear nourishing fluid within the eyeball. When the drainage of this fluid is defective, pressure begins to build up within the eyeball. The cause of the obstruction may be within the eyeball, the narrowing of the angle or the drainage channels. When the pressure in the eye rises, it is known as glaucoma. Glaucoma damages the optic nerve, causing blind spots in areas of vision. These spots often go

unnoticed until there’s considerable damage to the optic nerve. When the entire nerve is destroyed, it leads to blindness. This can be prevented if the damage to the nerve is detected at an early stage. “Different types of glaucoma have different symptoms. Patients suffering from chronic glaucoma may have headaches, pain around the eyes, blurry side vision, difficulty in crossing roads, frequent change of glasses and haloes around lights,” says Dr. Keki Mehta, director & surgical head of Mehta International Eye Institute and Colaba Eye hospital. He adds, “Very often though, there are no signs and hence this form is also known as the silent glaucoma. The pressure in the eye is increased, the angles are open and the optic nerve is damaged.

During an attack of acute glaucoma, the patient develops sudden blurring of vision with severe pain around the eye and a throbbing headache. He or she may also see rainbow haloes around light. Sometimes nausea and vomiting also occur. If not treated quickly and adequately, blindness will ensue. In the case of congenital glaucoma (glaucoma occurring in babies and children), the child is sensitive to light and tears excessively. The eyes appear cloudy and become abnormally large in size accompanied by poor vision. It may be also be associated with other congenital abnormalities.” Dr. Keki further says that a combination of eye drops and laser treatments and/or surgery are most commonly used to cure glaucoma.

dear Barbara, I have recently noticed that the big toe nails on my feet have developed ingrowths, making it extremely painful for me to walk around too much, let alone wear footwear such as heels. This is the first time I have developed an ingrown nail and do not know what to do. Please help me! — saachi shah, parel dear saachi, Wedge a small piece of cotton between the ingrown nail and your flesh. Change this cotton at least once a day to keep pressure away from your toe and ease discomfort. This also helps the nail to grow out naturally. Avoid wearing closed shoes or make sure you opt for a pair that are roomy at the top. This helps your feet breathe and your toes aren’t cramped. As a thumb rule, cut your toe nails frequently and ensure you cut them straight as curved nails are more likely to develop ingrowths. Soak your feet before you cut your nails or dab some baby oil to soften it a bit. If you develop a cut or pus filled wound, visit your doctor.

>> Protect your hair from the sun to help colour last longer

dear Barbara, I love to colour my hair, but unfortunately I have noticed that the colour begins to fade drastically in only three weeks. I frequently wash and condition my hair but the problem persists. What should I do ? — mina Goyal, andheri (W) dear mina, The basic cause for the fading of your hair colour is oxidation. Simply put, the oxygen molecules get attached to the colour molecules in your hair causing the colour to fade, which unfortunately, you have no control over. However, you can control the amount of sunlight your hair gets. Sunlight causes hair colour to fade, so it is wise to reduce exposure or tuck your hair into a cap. Hard water and harsh, clinical shampoos also cause fading, so pick a shampoo specifically for colour-treated hair. Better still, ask your hair stylist for a recommendation. Sobha developers (SDL) reported a dismal sales volume for 3QFY14 which sets tone for a guidance miss during FY14E, we now expect SDL to achieve ~3.7mn sqft in pre-sales (vs guidance of 4.2mn sqft) and ~Rs 23bn in new sales value (vs guidance of Rs 26bn). SDLs muted 3QFY14 sales volume is largely attributable to fewer high volume launches (0.45mn sqft vs 1.13mn sqft during 2QFY14) and hence we expect Prestige Estates to have a limited impact. We don’t see any collateral damage yet on the demand offtake as (i) quality supply has reduced with ~45% of the real estate developers facing balance sheet stress and hence out of buyers radar (due to execution issue) (ii) quality developers properties have delivered appreciation in prices and continue to see buyer accretion (iii) Southern markets affordability remains strong whilst they deliver a better value in terms of quality & timeliness vs Northern & Western peers & (iv) NRIs are increasing their share of property investments into the home markets exploiting the currency windfall. Our channel checks suggest there has been sales pickup in the month of December-13 after a dismal Oct-13 & Nov-13 and hence positive momentum should cautiously build up going into 1HCY14E. Maintain our bullish stance on the Southern players & we recommend BUY on dips on Sobha and Prestige Estates. 3QFY14 volume de-grows 26.2% QoQ and 18% YoY, Realization up 7.6% QoQ and 14.8% YoY. Despite a seasonally strong quarter (festive) SDL has reported volume de-growth of 26.2% QoQ and 18% YoY. The new launches viz. Elan, Coimbatore (JD with Lakshmi Machine Works) with saleable area of 0.32mn sqft and Sobha Estate, Mysore (plotted development) with saleable area of 0.13mn sqft didn’t add up much to the pre-sales numbers. The key highlights of 3QFY14 are Bangalore witnessed a de-growth of 14.8% YoY, absence of new launches impacted pre-sales. NCR saw a sharp deceleration of new sales down 77.2% YoY. This is partially attributable to unaffordability in NCR market and partially on account of project configuration. We expect SDL to recalibrate the product sizing issue to invigorate buying sentiment. Almost all regions contributed negatively to sales volume YoY, except for Pune and Mysore. Average realization / sqft grew 14.8% YoY, which partially allayed shortfall in sales volume. During 9MFY14, SDL recorded new sales of 2.66mn sqft with sales value of Rs17.37bn a growth of (0.8%) and 12.8% YoY. Company highlighted that a lackluster 3QFY14 makes it cautious to achieve full year pre-sales value and volume guidance. SDL has ~12.4mn sqft of new launches planned for CY14E (SDL’s share ~9.8mn sqft, ~3mn sqft planned during 4QFY14E), lending visibility to new sales. Our view: We maintain our BUY stance and a SOTPbased target price of Rs460/share. We value the real estate business at Rs 431/share using a NAV model and the contracting and manufacturing business (C&M) at Rs 29/share. We believe that the near-term catalysts are: (i) strong launch pipeline and (ii) focus on further balance sheet de-leveraging.

First Call Research calls a ‘Buy’ on Finolex Cables CMP: Rs. 89

Target Rs. 110

Finolex cables, Pune based electrical equipment company reported double digit rise in both Net Profit and EBDITA in second quarter results FY14. Net profit stood at Rs. 799.80 mn against Rs. 574.60 mn in the corresponding quarter of the previous year, 39 percent jump YOY. EBDITA also rose at the same rate and stands at Rs. 1179 mn in the current September quarter compared to Rs. 847.70 mn in the same period previous year. Profit Before Tax galloped 56 percent at Rs. 1024.30 in Q2 FY14 against Rs. 657.70 mn in Q2 FY13. Finolex Cables, leading domestic manufacturer of electrical and communication cables had a lackluster sales performance of 1.22 percent YOY. But this has been compensated by controlling expenditure which rose by just 0.46 percent YOY and rise in other income (up 114 percent) and exceptional item in form of forex gains of Rs. 103.80 mn during the quarter. The electrical equipment industry is dependent on the performance of infrastructure and real estate sector and thus has been affected by low investment activity by corporates and slow clearances of projects by the government. The company’s sales are expected to pick up with improved economic environment as it has strong financial fundamentals. In future with the roll out of 4G services, communication cables business will also pick up which constitute 8-10 percent of the total revenues. The company has also reduced its short term borrowings by 72 percent and Long term borrowings are up by just 1.65 percent over the last six months. Finolex Cables is a sure bet for long term investment and thus we recommend ‘BUY’ for medium to long-term at a target price of Rs 110. Payroll numbers were broad-based with both manufacturers and service providers posting job creation. On price rise, HSBC said, the rate of cost inflation was only moderate and the weakest since July. Moreover, input price inflation in the private sector as a whole eased to a six-month low. “On a positive note, inflation pressures are easing and optimism about the coming year is rising, Eskesen said. Market analysts are of the opinion that inflation has peaked and will ease in December as food prices cool on better supplies with winter crops coming in.

n a significant ruling, the Delhi High Court yesterday held that the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) can audit the accounts of private telecom operators under the relevant provisions of the law. A bench of justices Pradeep Nandrajog and V Kameswar Rao permitted the top accounting body to conduct audit of private telecom companies under the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Act. It rejected the separate petitions of Association of Unified Telecom Service Providers (AUSPI) and Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) filed against the decision of Telecom tribunal TDSAT on the issue in 2010. The high court had reserved its

order in November 2013, after conducting marathon hearings on the issue where it took on record submissions of the Centre, CAG and the petitioners — COAI and AUSPI. Both the associations had argued, in essence, that CAG can’t audit private companies. To achieve the purpose of audit, the operators had pointed out that they have already put in place mechanism of special audit as envisaged in the license agreement between department of telecom and the companies. The firms had claimed they maintain accounts in line with the TRAI rules and can’t be forced to furnish financials to CAG. The CAG had vigorously staked its claim to audit the accounts and sought revenue sharing details from the telecom companies.

BUSINESS BRIEFS Sebi Warns Public Against High Returns Via Illegal Schemes

Market regulator Sebi cautioned investors and the general public against entities making false promises of exorbitant returns through schemes being run without regulatory approvals. In a public notice, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) observed that some companies or entities are illegally mobilising funds from the public by making false promises of exorbitant rates of return under various schemes. These companies are also indulging in issuing Cumulative Convertible Preference Shares (CCPS) and Cumulative Redeemable Preference Shares (CRPS) without the necessary authorisation and regulatory approvals, Sebi said.

Companies May Issue Debt To Non-Residents As Bonus, Says RBI

The Reserve Bank allowed Indian companies to issue non-convertible or redeemable preference shares or debentures to non-resident shareholders from their reserves as bonus. “On a review and with a view to rationalising and simplifying the procedures, it has been decided that an Indian company may issue non-convertible/redeemable preference shares or debentures to non-resident shareholders...By way of distribution as bonus from its general reserves, RBI said in a notification.

RIL May Double Natural Gas Output If Prices Increase

Reliance Industries may more than double natural gas production to 50 million standard cubic meters per day by 2018 if gas prices are increased from April, Bernstein Research said. The projected output will come from satellite fields in the eastern offshore KG-D6 block as well as North East Coast block NEC-25, off the West Bengal coast.Despite several years of delay, we expect India to announce a radical reform of natural gas prices starting in 2014, said a Bernstein report. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs last month approved the Rangarajan formula for pricing domestic gas at an average of international gas hub prices and actual cost of importing gas in its liquid form (LNG) into India.

Kolshet, Kapurbavdi Junction, Thane (W) with an entry fee of Rs. 30/- per person redeemable against cold drink. “Expectations of price correction has been a major factor in the slowing down of property sales, says Shailesh Puranik, President MCHI-CREDAI Thane. He adds, “however, since the cost of acquisition and execution has increased phenomenally, the prices are only going to head north in the days to come.

ANMI Pitches For Tax Breaks To Investors In Capital Market

Stock market participants have requested the government and the Sebi to provide tax benefits for investors in the primary market and consider issuance of certain bonds as a safety net mechanism in IPOs. The suggestions have been made by the Association of National Exchange Members of India (ANMI). According to the association’s President RMCV Prasada Rao, tax incentives need to be provided to bring in more investors into the capital market.

SANCHEZ HAT-TRICK TAKES BARCA TO TOP

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JANUARY 7, 2014

M

ADRID: Barcelona moved back to the top of La Liga on goal difference with a comfortable 4-0 win over Elche thanks to a hat-trick from Alexis Sanchez. The Catalans are tied with Atletico Madrid on 49 points with the two set to meet for the first time in the league this season next weekend at the Vicente Calderon. Lionel Messi was once again watching from the sidelines yesterday as he nears a comeback from a hamstring injury and Neymar was left on the bench having recently returned from a Christmas break in Brazil. However, Sanchez and Pedro Rodriguez once again proved able deputies as they slotted home inside the opening 15 minutes. Xavi Hernandez also missed a second-half penalty for the hosts, but it mattered little as Sanchez rolled home his second goal from Pedro’s pass shortly afterwards. And the Chilean sealed his first hat-trick for the club with a stunning free-kick 21 minutes from time. Barca now lead Real Madrid by eight points, but Madrid can cut the gap on the leaders to five with victory over Celta Vigo on Monday.

“We played very well. We had variation, precision, control and we had a lot of chances,” said Barca boss Gerardo Martino. “We were always concentrated through the game and limited the opponent to very few sights of goal. In the second-half especially we controlled the game completely.” And the Argentine was particularly pleased with the contribution of Pedro and Sanchez in the absence of Messi and Neymar. “I was happy for Alexis because, as a coach, you always like

to see players like he and Pedro who work so hard for the team get their reward.” Barca needed just seven minutes to open their account in 2014 as Jordi Alba’s enticing cross from the left was expertly finished by Sanchez at the back post. Victor Valdes was making his return in goal for Barca after six weeks out with a calf injury, but he was very nearly beaten on 14 minutes when Richmond Boakye fired a powerful drive off the outside of the post. Moments later, though, Barca

had made the game safe as Cesc Fabregas’ 10th assist of the season released Pedro to round Elche keeper Tono and roll the ball into an unguarded net. Pedro could have added to his tally twice more in the first-half as he flashed a shot just past the far post before seeing an attempted chip over Tono also float off target. Barca had a great chance to extend their advantage four minutes after the break when Cristian Sapunaru upended Fabregas inside the area and was extremely fortunate not to be shown a red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. And Elche had another slice of luck when Xavi side-footed the resultant spot-kick wide of the target. The third goal did finally arrive just after the hour mark as Pedro unselfishly squared for Sanchez to double his tally for the afternoon. Six minutes later Sanchez sealed his hat-trick with a fine curling free-kick from 25 yards for his 11th goal of the season. Elsewhere, Real Sociedad recorded their fifth consecutive league win by beating Athletic Bilbao 2-0 in the Basque derby at Anoeta.

UMBAI: This would be a one in a million chance for any sprinter and a dream come true for anyone to train with a person who has coached living legends like Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake. 21-year-old Indian sprinter Amiya Kumar Mallick has got this chance this as he bids to set his mark in the Asian Games in Incheon later in the year. But for now, Mallick is all set to leave for Jamaica on January 12. Glen Mills, the head coach of Racers Trackers Club in Kingston, Jamaica will coach the Odisha runner in both the 100 and 200 metres. Mallick will train under a number of coaches who will help him enhance his performance over the fourmonth period. Mallick’s trip has been arranged by the Orissa Olympic Association after his brilliant run of form in the National Open Athletic Championship held in Ranchi, Jharkhand in August, last year where he won the gold in 200 metres clocking 21.22 seconds. “This trip was possible due to the efforts of the Orissa Olympic Association and a few sponsors that helped me with all the sponsorship I needed for the four month stay. There is lot that I am hoping to learn with Mills’ team over there. It will be a huge challenge for me and I am looking to make full use of this

Amiya Kumar Mallick opportunity,” said Mallick on the sidelines of an Indian Oil event which showcased the many sportspersons who were employed with them. Mallick said that with the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games approaching he was looking to remain injury free during the entire training period and wanted to improve his speed and endurance. “What is most important for me as of now is to improve my endurance levels and my speed. As there is a timing I need to clock to qualify for

the Asian Games, that would be my priority there. There is so much that I am looking to gain from them. There will be a lot of assistant coaches to Mills who will be helping in gaining strength, speed and fitness. Keeping fit throughout the year will be the key,” said Mallick. The sprinter has clocked 10.50 seconds in the 100 metres and 21.22s in the 200 metres in the past and needs to improve his timing by a fraction of a second in the latter to book a berth in Incheon. “When I go there I will work with the coaches to improve on the timing. I know that if I improve my time by even a fraction of a second I will qualify for the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. If I am lucky to break the current Indian national record of 20.73 seconds, I am confident I will win a medal at the Asian Games too,” he said. However, a major hurdle stands before the sprinter which he acknowledged. “I am very lanky. I need to build muscle. I am 21years-old and I hope to come back stronger so that I can push harder to the finish line.” He missed the bus to the London Games due to an injury but now the lanky sprinter is leaving no stone unturned to get a ticket for the Asian Games. “I was working hard enough for the Olympic Games but then there was an injury due to which I couldn’t go,” he added.

IMES (France): India’s Mahesh Mangaonkar began the New Year the way he ended 2013 - with title success on the PSA World Tour. The Mumbai teenager claimed the first Tour title of the year when he despatched top-seeded Scot Greg Lobban in the final of the Open du Gard, the PSA Challenger 5 squash event marking its sixth year at Squash des Arenes here. Third seed Mangaonkar made his breakthrough in the semi-finals when he crushed second-seeded Kuwaiti Ammar Altamimi in just 28 minutes. Now in the fourth Tour final of his career, the 19-year-old had a point to prove when he faced Lobban, a 21-year-old from Edinburgh enjoying his eighth Tour final. Mangaonkar’s success in last month’s Imet Open in Slovakia came after a five-game final victory over Lobban - the result of which is that both players now share a World No.82 ranking. EW DELHI: Australia’s Assistant Coach Graham Reid feels India would be the most unpredictable team of the upcoming World Hockey League final here. “We feel that Germany, Belgium and Netherlands are the teams to look out for in the League, but India is the most unpredictable team. The Indian boys can upset any strong team on any given day hence, should be extra careful while playing them,” said Reid. Australia are placed in group B alongside Argentina, Belgium and Netherlands, while India have Eng-

land, Germany and New Zealand in their pool. Australia open their campaign against Belgium in the opening match of the tournament on January 10 at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium here. The reigning world champions are keen to become the first ever side to claim men’s Hockey World League title. “The entire team is excited and looking forward to play here in India. While, because of injury we had to leave behind a few players but the entire team is very confident to face

any kind of challenge that the League will throw on us. Our group is very tough with Belgium and Netherlands in it, but we are confident of playing good and tough hockey,” said captain Mark Knowles. The Australian side was beaten into second place at the Hockey World League Semi Final in Rotterdam when they lost in a dramatic shoot-out against Belgium. The Kookaburras came into the event as Oceania champions, having defeated host nation New Zealand in the tournament final to take the trophy.

DHONI KEEN TO CONTINUE AS SKIPPER IN ALL THREE FORMATS

N

EW DELHI: Mahendra Singh Dhoni is not averse to the idea of continuing as the skipper of the the Indian cricket team in all the three formats, saying it would be unfair to burden a new player with the mantle of captaincy with just one year left for the World Cup. "I think, it's a point of no return with the World Cup literally one year away from now. It won't give a new guy the ideal time to play, at least, 70-80-90 games beginning to the World Cup that's what we would like to have him play before the World Cup", Dhoni said. "I understand the pressure, it's not always that you turn up and at the same time, you get the kind of things which give you more experience than the others. So, we have to go through it," he said at a promotional event here today. Dhoni, India's World Cup winning captain, was responding to a question on giving up captaincy in one of the formats to prolong his career. Dhoni had, last year, said that he might have to give up a format to lead India's title defence in 2015 but such a decision would be made only at the end of 2013. Dhoni will be 33 by the time the World Cup starts in Australia and New Zealand. The skipper said he is feeling a lot fitter and healthier than ever.

"I was really fortunate to see where I am right now with the amount of cricket that we are playing these days. As of now, it's looking good. The body is closely knit together. How it will be (in future), I don't know but so far so good," he said. As the talks veered towards India's disastrous tour of South Africa, where the Men in Blue lost both the ODI and Test series, Dhoni said one bad session in Durban cost them the second Test. "Yes, we had some tough times. We had a bad ses-

sion. We had one really bad session because of which we were on the losing side," he said. However, as always, Dhoni picked up the positives from the Proteas series. "I think the process is more important. The last couple of series before the South African series were I can't even say a decent or a bad one, it can go worse than that, but the good thing is that at least we know the players are there. We had a lot of good sessions in South Africa. It's a process where we have to im-

prove and also the fact that now we will be continuously playing out of India, so it will give more exposure to the players. Most of the players, who are part of the side barring a few, they have not played, may be, more than five Test matches outside India. I know they will take some time but the overall performance was good," he added. Critics have often questioned Indian bowlers' ability to take 20 wickets on foreign soil and Dhoni said it's one area where the team needs to improve. It was, after all, the fast bowlers' inability to dismiss the South African batsmen twice on a helpful pitch at Wanderers that deprived India of a Test win. The inclusion of pacers Ishwar Pandey and Varun Aaron in the touring squad of New Zealand has made one thing clear that the team management is looking out for bowlers who can take 20 wickets in Tests. "We have got the same amount of talent. We have bowlers who can take 20 wickets but still this is one area where we need to improve. I think on the wickets that are helpful we have done well. Our bowlers have done exceptionally well. Outside India, at times, you get wickets where we have to hit the deck hard and that goes completely opposite to what our bowlers actually bowl.

Have really worked hard on my fitness: Pujara

More pain to come for Cheteshwar Pujara, shattered England, MUMBAI: who has climbed to his career-best fifth in the ICC Test ranksays Flower ings for batsmen after a fine series

SYDNEY: Coach Andy Flower warned there was more pain to come in the wake of England's Ashes series meltdown in Australia. Australia completed a 5-0 clean sweep on Sunday, routing the hapless tourists for 166 off just 31.4 overs to carry off a 281-run victory in three days in the Sydney Test. Such was the magnitude of the series defeat that major ramifications are expected for English cricket, just months after they beat Australia 3-0 in England. Flower said he would not identify individual players facing the chop, with reports that high-profile batsman Kevin Pietersen, one of the big English failures in the series, was under pressure. Pietersen, who averages just over 47 in 104 Tests, was dismissed for three and six in the final Test to finish with 294 runs in the series at 29.40. Flower said he was prepared to make tough decisions admitting the nightmare series was the end of an era. "This will be a new start, and so it should be. "It does feel like the end of some type of era. We might have to take a little more pain before we have sustained success again.”

in South Africa, today said he had worked very hard on the fitness in the last six months after his knee surgery in 2011. Pujara aggregated 280 runs in the recently-concluded two-Test series against South Africa. "I am really satisfied with my performance over the last one to one-and-a-half years. ‘Youngsters need to balance T20 with traditional game’ The Mumbai batsman observed that most of the younger players did not look keen to bat the entire day or bowl a lot of overs, post the success of the Indian Premier T20 League. "A lot of youngsters are playing T20 cricket. The IPL obviously is kind of a short-cut route. When you play first class cricket, you play four days of hard cricket. Not many bowlers want to bowl 25 overs in a day or the batsmen probably don't have the temperament to bat the whole day or have the patience to bat the whole day," he said.
