nvestigations into the Mumbai University question paper leak revealed that the deal took place inside the IT co-ordinator's office at Agarwal College in Kalyan. This is corroborated by the CCTV footage obtained from the camera installed in the office which shows money being exchanged for the Marketing and Human Resource Management (MHRM) question paper between two men. The two accused appearing in the footage have been identified as Rajkumar Mishra, IT Co-ordinator at Agarwal College and Rajendra Borade, a clerk of the same college, who paid Rs.2,000 for the Third Year B.Com-Semester VI paper. On April 4, the Mumbai Crime Branch probed into the MHRM paper leak, based on a complaint filed by Dr. Padma Deshmukh, Controller of Examinations of Mumbai University, at the Mumbai police's cyber cell. The complaint stated that the students were able to obtain the paper prior to the examination through the WhatsApp messenger

n account of World Health Day 2014, Wockhardt Foundation organised a social ‘Health and Sanitation’ awareness camp on vector-borne diseases at Sindhi Camp, RCF Chembur, in a move to reduce incidences of vector-borne diseases among the slums in Mumbai in line with WHO’s theme. Wockhardt Foundation is a national, secular, nonprofit organisation engaged in human welfare and social service activities. About 400 people from the RCF slums benefited from the camp led by Dr. Akshay Chhallani, Senior General Physician, Wockhardt Hospitals. The occasion was graced by Joi Barua, lead vocalist of the band ‘Joi’ and National Film award winner of the movie ‘Dev D’. Mumbai slums are a hotbed for vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue and chikungunya. Almost every fourth house in Mumbai slums has a family member who suffers from some vectorborne disease. According to a study, water borne morbidity in Mumbai slums was 24 per cent. In this light, Dr. Huz (Dr. Huzaifa Khorakiwala), Trustee and CEO, Wockhardt Foundation said “Wockhardt Foundation has been committed to improving the health and sanitation situation among the
slums in Mumbai. Some of the key related initiatives by Wockhardt Foundation are Mobile 1000 Programme for providing primary healthcare services to the poor, Dr. Health Programme for awareness on health, illness and cleanliness, Shudhu for free distribution of water purification tablets and BioToilets for complete waste management solution. Dr. Chhallani said, “Practicing
proper health, hygiene and sanitation is mandatory to prevent infections and vector-borne diseases. Incidences of malaria, dengue and chikungunya are due to unhygienic surroundings and consumption of impure water. Open defecation causes various health hazars. Maintaining sanitation around toilets is critical to prevent breeding of mosquitoes responsible for causing vector-borne diseases. Water is the breeding place for vectors such as dengue, malaria mosquitoes. Consumption of impure water leads to infections and morbid conditions. It is therefore important to consume pure drinking water.” Shreyata Sohni, water purification expert from Wockhardt Foundation demonstrated the use of Shudhu tablets for water purification and better sanitation. More than 200 Shudhu strips (1 strip per person) were distributed free of cost among the slum families. A group of youngsters from the ‘Yash Theatre Group’, Ghatkopar performed a street play for slum dwellers on ‘Health and Sanitation measures to prevent vector-borne diseases’. Marathi and Hindi pamphlets on vector-borne disease awareness and Shudhu water purification instructions were distributed.

By an A-lister about A-listers for other A-listers That's a lot of A-listing, but when the driver is Nawaz Modi Singhania, what do you expect! On Saturday, she held a preview of her new solo art exhibition titled (a little unimaginatively, we thought) 'Portrait Study of Well Known Personalities' at the Raymond Flagship Store on Warden Road, and a wide range of A-listers was in attendance. Now Nawaz is known in the Indian art circuit for her interests in various art forms, and also in

Her artistic side has been highlighted these past few years in her solo exhibitions, three in Mumbai and one in New Delhi. At various times she has created her Charcoal Series, Body Art, and other collections titled The Awakening, Born Free and Miscellaneous. This time, she has created portraits in charcoal, oils and acrylic as a tribute to iconic stars like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Tom Cruise, singers Beyonce and Michael Jackson, sports people like David Beckham, Maradona and Roger Federer, royalty like Princess Diana, scientists like Albert Einstein, corporate executive and

And while they may be too pretty for our own taste (except for Dr. Einstein), we are sure the public will enjoy looking at them very much while they are on display at the store from now till May 4. That is, unless the A-listers have already snapped them up for their equally beautiful homes.

Pradeep Chandra, old friend and photographer, was at the Sofitel in Bandra Kurla Complex on Saturday at Anil Dharker's Literature Live event to launch a book on the incomparable Waheeda Rehman who wears her years so lightly. In his own words: “I had a special reason to go for this book launch because Waheeda Raheman was the first actor I had photographed when I was still schooling, on the sets of 'Baat ek Raat ki' and my picture had appeared in Filmfare. “Actually, Nasreen Munni Kabir’s book 'Conversations with Waheeda Rehman' was to be launched almost two weeks ago. Then Nanda died and Waheeda was just too upset to do the event. She was her closest friend. Then on Saturday, she got it all together. “ Waheeda walked in with her elegant style to release her book among her friends, colleagues, admirers and the media. The programme started exactly on time and the author and the subject sat together on the dais with Dharker who began by saying that a lot of his friends had asked him, “This is the interview, where is the biography”, before saying they had found it an interesting read. “The actress, still beautiful in her 70s, had quite a few things to say about the book and her career. Her private life was her own, however, too personal to be shared. But she reminisced about the first time she came to Bombay and stayed at the Ritz in Churchgate where she was a guest of Guru Dutt. When she went to meet Guru Dutt, he asked her a few questions and wanted to sign her on a threeyear contract. Waheeda agreed but she wanted a clause in the contract to be added. If she didn’t like any of the costumes, she would not wear them. Raj Khosla, his assistant, said how she could put a clause like that. Meanwhile, Guru Dutt was quiet, then he asked her if she had seen any of his films. She said not. At which point he told her to go and watch 'Mr.& Mrs 55' and come back the next day. “Next day when she went to meet the actor producer, he asked if she had found anything objectionable in the film. No, she said. 'You make clean films.' But she still insisted on the clause and Guru Dutt agreed to put it in. “Do you know, Waheeda told the audience on Saturday, that 'I have never ever worn even a sleeveless blouse in my personal or professional life'. Dharker inquired whether it was true that Guru Dutt went into depression after 'Kaagaz ke Phool'. “To this the actress replied that she did not know, how could anyone else say why he went into depression when he did make a very successful film
One enchanted evening last week, Waheeda made a rare appearance to talk about the book on her, written by Nasreen Munni Kabir, and to reminisce and walk down down memory lane with a rapt audience.
after that – 'Chaudvin Ka Chand'. “Guru Duttt’s sister Lalita Lazmi and her director daughter was also in the audience, both of whom Waheeda acknowledged. “Who were the directors she enjoyed working with the most? On her list was Vijay Anand who directed her in 'Kala Bazaar' and her favourite film 'Guide'. Raj Khosla and Guru Dutt were also on the list, she said. Kabir reminded her that she had also mentioned Asit Sen who made 'Khamoshi' with her. Waheeda agreed and said, 'How can I forger Satyajit Ray with whom I had worked in a Bengali film? Ray told me once to buy R.K. Narayan’s Guide which he may like to direct in future and promised I would be Rosie.' Then years later, Dev Anand gave her the book and asked her to read it as the screen play was being worked out. When the lead was finally offered to her, that is when she remembered that Ray had wanted her to do it too, adding that perhaps it was her destiny to play Rosie, her best role”. For all present, it was an enchanted evening.

Cong sitting MP Eknath Gaikwad vying for a electoral hat-trick

umbai South-Central Lok Sabha constituency was once regarded as the fertile ground for trade unions given the presence of textile mills many of which are now closed. Since 1957 till 2004 was represented by Members of Parliament with trade union backgrounds like veteran communist leader Shripad Amrut Dange (1957, 1967), Kamgar
Aghadi leader Datta Samant (1984), Shiv Sena trade union leader Wamanrao Mahadik (1989) and five term Sena MP Mohan Rawale (1991-2004). The constituency today comprises of upmarket localities of Dadar to a mix of middle class localities of Mahim and Chembur to the Asia's largest slum of Dharavi slums which are home to small scale industries like pottery, tanneries, leather goods, tailoring,
metal recycling and many others. The constituency comprises a mix of communities with Tamils and other communities from South India dominating Dharavi, Chembur and Sion Koliwada, while Dadar, Wadala, Anushakti Nagar and Mahim are dominated by a mix of Maharashtrian and minority communities. The upmarket and middle class localities of Dadar, Sion, Mahim
Dharavi redevelopment will be my priority: Sundar Balakrishnan By Zuber Ansari
A
am Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Sundar Balakrishnan, running from Mumbai's South Central constituency, is setting himself an enormous goal. He wants to sort of the issues of Dharavi, popularised as the largest slum in Asia, ranging from redevelopment to providing proper sanitation facility. Speaking to ADC, Balakrishnan said, “The South Central constituency has a 30 per cent Maharashtrian population, 20-22 per cent South Indian population and 20 per cent Muslim population. After visiting the slums in various parts within the jurisdiction, we found that the sitting MP has done nothing for the development here.” Sundar Balakrishnan is a resident of Chembur. He has 30 years of experience in the corporate world. He is asking voters to cast their vote in his

Balakrishnan says there are hundreds of builders looking to take advantage of what the opportunities that surround Dharavi. If AAP forms government in the centre, or if he won the elec-
tions in his constituency, he promised to “throw out all these builders and ask MHADA to construct the buildings under the redevelopment scheme.” Another major problem in this constituency is the sanitation problem, Balakrishnan added. People do not have proper drinking water. In areas like Shastri Nagar, with a population of 5,000, the people have only about 4-5 BMC toilets to use. And often, the water runs for only one hour a day. Sundar Balakrishnan's journey into the social world began in 2011 during the revolutionary movement of India Against Corruption (IAC) when revered Gandhian-activist Anna Hazare began his fight against corruption. He gave up his corporate job in April 2013 and devoted his time to AAP for the uplift of society.

Girni Kamgar Union leader Datta Iswalkar too admits that ever since the mills have closed down, most of the mill workers have migrated back to their native places in Western Maharashtra and Konkan regions. He argues that the slow pace of allotment of flats to 1.48 lakh mill workers may not have an

impact on the general elections. The sitting Congress MP Eknath Gaikwad would ideally love to bank on MNS candidate Aditya Shirodkar to split the Sena votes. But this time around he has to contend with a formidable Sena opponent Rahul Shewale. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has fielded businessman and activist Sundar Balakrishnan who has worked in Dharavi and amongst the under-privileged children there.

Debutant Aditya Shirodkar sure of victory By Yatin Ingle
W
hile experienced political leaders are gearing up to win back the seat, young guns are not far behind, making their own preparations. Being the only candidate from a political party's students wing to get the ticket, Aditya Shirodkar is in the fray from Dadar. Born and brought up in Dadar, Aditya enjoys the votes of Dadar residents, especially college students as he has been an active leader in students politics. An Arts graduate who is an active member in the youth wing of MNS- Maharashtra Navnirman Vidhyarthi Sena, Aditya has been its president since the formation of the MNVS eight years ago. After leading his party to victory at the Mumbai University Senate elections and ousting Shiv Sena's Yuva Sena at the Student Council elections, he
Aditya Shirodkar, MNS. has now been considered as one of the strongest candidates from South-Central constituency for a LS seat this year. Though Aditya, 28, is the youngest contestant in the South-Central constituency, the others being Congress' Lok Sabha member Eknath Gaikwad, 74, and Shiv Sena's Rahul Shewale, 42, it will not
be a cakewalk for the MNVS leader. After completing his eighth year as the party's youth wing president, Aditya states that education, railways, environment and technology will be the major sectors where he wishes to make changes for the better. When asked about his agenda if he wins the seat, Aditya told the ADC: "We aim to bring major changes in education, railways and environment. The Universities in India should move ahead and adapt teaching and technology akin to foreign universities. Also, as well as from ITI should get licenses which will help them to get jobs. Another aspect will be setting up sports universities in Maharashtra. Research will be encouraged among students and grants from the Universities Grants Commission should be provided. We also have planned for a vocational university.”

head of the Lok Sabha polls, sleuths of the Local Crime Branch (LCB) unit of Thane (rural) police led by Police Inspector Kishore Khairnar, arrested two people from Nallasopara, who were found to be in possession of a country-made revolver and two live cartridges. According to the police, as part of their prepoll preparedness, the LCB team under the instructions of Thane (rural) Rajesh Pradhan, had intensified vigil and activated their informer network in the area. Following a tip-off it was suspected that members of an arms dealers' gang would arrive in Nallasopara and a team led by API S.B. ive days after Khuzaima Qutbuddin, who claims to be the 53rd Dai al-Mutlaq and head of the Dawoodi Bohra community, approached the Bombay High Court urging the court that he be declared as the Syedna, the single bench of the High Court on Monday recused itself from hearing the suit. This comes from the single bench of Justice S.J. Kathawalla who recused himself from hearing the case as he had earlier appeared for the late Syedna in one of the matters. All the attempts made by His Holiness Syedna Khuzaima Qutbuddin have been ignored and rebuffed by Mufaddal Saifuddin, who has made several false and contradictory claims as to how nass was performed on him”, Dr. Abdeali said. Ponder awhile... “Be more dedicated to making solid achievements than in running after swift but synthetic happiness.” — APJ Abdul Kalam
Modi stamp in the BJP manifesto N
ARENDRA Modi's stamp is seen in the Bharatiya Janata Party's manifesto which was released yesterday. The stress is on 'good governance and development.' But the party could not but refer to the construction of the Ram Mandir as per the Constitution. The party said this was a programme which had no religious significance. One of the leaders said there was no 'Hindutva or Atva' in the manifesto. The focus was on development and governance. The party has decided to carry out tax reforms. It wants to end “tax terrorism”. One can probably expect a popular tax reform to be carried out. The focus is on jobs, women's empowerment, elimination of corruption and infrastructure. Education system is to be changed so it can reach international standards. The party will be open to FDI, but not in retail. It is totally opposed to FDI in retail. For the people belonging to all communities, equal opportunities will be provided. Modernisation of madrasas is one of the programmes which will get urgent attention. A proposal in the manifesto is a declaration that an effort will be made to withdraw article 370 – which pertains to J&K. It did not take much time for chief minister Omar Abdullah and his father Farooq Abdullah to hit out at the proposal and declare the BJP was following a policy of polarisation. This may be a proposal of the BJP which may cause a great deal of unrest in Jammu and Kashmir. The BJP has presented a manifesto of hope and optimism. The party has taken care to ensure, if elected, equal survival chances for all people. Whether the promises made in the manifesto will be carried out, time will tell – but the manifesto itself is quite impressive. The Congress which has, as expected, criticised the manifesto claims that quite a few of the promises in the BJP manifesto are also in its manifesto. The Congress and the BJP have produced quite a few manifestos in the past. The Congress has been there for some 65 years producing bright images but how many promises have been carried out? The BJP too has done the same. To what extent are the promises made in a manifesto implemented? What we have seen so far is that promises remain on paper and the voters are let down again and again.

ICTATORSHIPS get a fillip when democracies falter. India committed this cardinal sin when it abstained from voting at the UN Human Rights Council. A resolution was sought to be passed to seek an international, transparent inquiry to find out whether Sri Lanka had killed in cold blood 40,000 soldiers and others in the wake of hostilities against the Liberation of Tamil Tigers Eelam (LTTE). They had surrendered unconditionally. India’s abstention reminds me of the words of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru: When aggression takes place or human rights are violated, we will not and cannot remain neutral. Yet the Manmohan Singh government has been found placating the dictatorial government headed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Colombo. New Delhi did not bother to consider the harm it would be doing to the cause of Tamils’ rights and their own say in governance. My hunch is that bureaucrats in the Ministry of External Affairs, with their mindset, decided to stay absent with what they thought was “in the interest of the country.” The hapless minister, Salman Khurshid, went along. He probably wanted the release of 100 fishermen who had “strayed” into the waters claimed by Sri Lanka. What will Salman Khurshid do now when the Colombo’s navy has killed four fishermen?

I do not regret the defeat of the LTTE which was largely a terrorists’ organization. But as a humanist, I feel sad over the killing of soldiers and their supporters after the surrender. The Sri Lankan army, obviously with the blessings of President Rajapaksa and his brother, Defence Minister Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, had no remorse over their indulging in a blood bath. The world would not have known about the killings if the enterprising BBC Channel 4 had not shown the documentary on the killings and atrocities committed not only against the LTTE troops but also against the

Confucius: Great proponent of conservatism ONFUCIUS’ political thought is based upon his ethical thought. He argues that the best government is one that rules through ‘rites’ and people’s natural morality, rather than by using bribery and coercion. He explained that this is one of the most important analects: “If the people be led by laws, and uniformity sought to be given them by punishments, they will try to avoid the punishment, but have no sense of shame. If they be led by virtue, and uniformity sought to be given them by the rules of propriety, they will have the sense of the shame, and moreover will become good.” This “sense of shame” is an internalisation of duty, where the punishment precedes the evil action, instead of following it in the form of laws as in Legalism. Confucius looked nostalgically upon earlier days, and urged the Chinese, particularly those with political power, to model themselves on earlier examples. In times of division, chaos, and endless wars between feudal
opment of Trincomalee port and, on the other Sri Lanka has become a refuge for some anti-India elements. We can probably do little when the Sri Lankan government is averse to accountability. It has already rejected two earlier resolutions—one of them was in conjunction with the UN Secretary General. By abstaining from a move that was meant to put pressure on the government to come clean, New Delhi has tried to let Colombo off the hook. Probably, we did so because our own record on human rights is so blotched that we do not want to set a precedent of an inquiry by outsiders.

Our insensitivity can be seen from the fact that practically no political party has included violation of human rights in its election manifesto. Two main parties, the Congress and the BJP, have such a bad record of their rule that they do not encourage even a discussion on the subject. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), a political platform of NGOs, should have had human rights violations on top of its agenda. But it too is losing its way— idealism—in an effort to become an alternative to the Congress and the BJP. People want a change. The AAP can emerge a power to reckon with. But is leader, Arvind Kejriwal, is as much surrounded by a coterie as are the Congress and the BJP. The AAP can retrieve the ground it has lost provided it does not make the election an end by itself. What the nation needs is a force to uphold the lower half to eliminate corruption and to reiterate the ideology of pluralism. Had the Sri Lankan government kept their principles above politics of power, it would not have been facing the charge of war crimes. But it is futile to expect this from Rajapaksa who is a dictator through and through. It is a pity that New Delhi has arrayed itself with such countries, known for the suppression of common man, particularly the Tamils. The din of election has suppressed even the demand for justice. Striking a personal note, I recall my visit to Colombo. There was a midnight knock at my hotel door and the police barged in to search the room for any discriminatory material. After some time the police force withdrew on its own. My crime was that I had held a press conference during the day to demand the removal of ban on LTTE and fight it out politically.

World T20 Champs: It was Sri Lanka's day, all the way! 'LANKAN Lions' roaring triumph' (ADC, Apr.7) says it all eloquently and the Sri Lankans indeed avenged their defeat in the World Cup final in 2011 in style. The minute Dhoni lost the toss and the Lankans chose to bowl first, a win did look difficult because, for one thing, it was a damp pitch after the rains and the ball would not rise to playable heights and for another, chasing is always a lot easier than setting a target. This piece of bad luck was compounded by Dhoni's obsession with Mohit Sharma and Yuvraj Singh – the former is nowhere near Shami in bowling with his funny run-up and he dropped a dolly catch besides failing to stop several fours in the deep. Yuvraj should have been dropped and replaced by Dhawan - he has lost all his ground strokes as well as the skiers essential for a T20 match. And Dhoni's field-setting was faulty as usual -- he never has a deep third man or a deep fine leg to back him up and also he leaves the midwicket region unguarded and all the batsmen score heavily only here. Team India need not feel despondent -- it has done remarkably well in this tournamant and one cannot be winning all the time. Sunday was not our

AN easily winnable match was badly lost due to poor tactics. A total of only 130 runs is too hard to defend even against the Netherlands, forget Sri Lanka. The blunder was committed by none other than Captain Dhoni when he sent in Yuvraj and not Raina. Yuvraj wasted too many balls to score few runs. His failure to accelerate the score at a crucial moment took the game away from India. Somebody had jokingly tweeted shortly after Sri Lanka won that "Yuvraj becomes the first person to win a World Cup for two countries! Whattaplaya!" Virat Kohli's valiant knock of 77 off 58 balls went in vain. Everything had gone well for the Sri Lankans. In the last four overs they bowled superbly to restrict India. Unless we manage to score over 160 runs in a T20, our bowlers cannot contain the opponents. Better luck next time to Dhoni and his team.

LEAP OF CHAMPIONS: The Kangaroos restricted the English women and played to a plan which worked in their favour and they deservedly bagged the T-20 World Cup.
Aussie women were superb
IPL corruption saga
AUSTRALIAN women's team had a vice-like grip on the T-20 World Cup as they trounced England by 6 wickets to annexe the World Cup for third successive time. Kangaroos played to a plan, restricted England and made of a match it with calculated hitting. Two-time defending champions LETTER OF THE DAY Australia powered to a six-wicket win over old foes England to win their third consecutive title in the women's World T-20. Australian bowling was on target and their fielders backed the team very well to make a match of it. Sarah Coyte grabbed 3-16 in her four overs and Ellyse Perry and Rene Farrell claimed two wickets each to restrict England to a modest 105-8. Heather Knight's 29 off 24 balls and Sarah Taylor's 18 lifted England to 55-1 before seven wickets crashed for 46 runs against the steady Australian attack that was backed by smart fielding. It was an emphatic win for the Aussie side in women's World Cup.
THE IPL corruption scandal took a new twist with a report claiming the involvement of more players and teams. The confidential report submitted by the Justice Mukul Mudgal Committee to the Supreme Court contains names of 12 to 13 players and not just six. These players are from Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Rajasthan Royals (RR) and three more IPL teams. Also there are allegations against IPL officials also being involved in the murky deal. The owners of CSK and RR are already being investigated in the corruption scandal, and there are three other teams. This implies that the cloud of betting and match-fixing hangs over players from five of the eight teams in the T20 tournament. The IPL controversy has resulted in Supreme Court asking BCCI president N. Srinivasan to step down and making former India captain Sunil Gavaskar as interim chief. Dirty dozen is spoiling the image of Indian Cricket in general and IPL Cricket in particular.

Political sportsmanship at its very best! FORGETTING about bitter political rivalries and greeting each other on the occasion of Gudi Padwa, Congress candidate and sitting MP Priya Dutt and BJP candidate Poonam Mahajan demonstrated true political sportsmanship in the run up to the Parliamentary elections which is a feather in the cap of the female candidates. The 'million dollar hug' was a collector's item and one for the album as hostilities should be restricted to elections only and irrespective of the candidate who wins, other candidates should work with the winner to serve their constituency and the voters. The beautiful Priya Dutt and the gorgeous Poonam Mahajan have done their fathers proud and both Sunil Dutt and Pramod Mahajan must be proud of their daughters in their eternal home. We need young female candidates like Priya, Poonam and their tribe in politics and other candidates especially the male ones should take a leaf out of their books and fight elections in a manner which respects humanity and at the same time show professional combat without the ugly scenes which have become a part and parcel of our political system over the years! — S.N. Standing Calf Raise l Stand with your legs bent slightly, a shoulder width apart. l Lift yourself on your tiptoes, as high as possible. Hold this position for a fraction of a second before returning to the starting position. l Increase the intensity by holding weights as Akshay demonstrates (left). l Breathe out while going up and breathe in while coming down.
>> The barbell static lunge
QUADRiCEPS BEnEfitS: Squats help you develop a strong lower body, strengthen your core and help you get toned. Lunges are safer than squats, especially if you have a history of knee problems. Squats Stand with your back against a wall, with your feet pointing forward. l Position a stability ball between you and the wall, so that it occupies the space from your shoulder-blades to your buttocks. l Gently squat, holding your body immobile, until your thighs are parallel to the floor. Feast like a king!
Losing weight by going on a strict diet that consists of nothing but a sickly green juice is extremely unappetising. Shirley Mistry suggests you try the Volumetrics Eating Plan instead
>> The key to this diet is eating as many fruits and non-starchy vegetables as possible without depriving yourself of other treats
« know more: why you lose your appetite when you are ill If you’re unfortunate enough to have to spend the first few weeks of summer in bed with the flu, you’ve probably noticed that your appetite has been decreasing. Rhea Dhanbhoora explains why this happens

W
f the idea of eating nothing but two bites of fish cake at every meal is downright revolting and you wouldn't go near a diet that is based on deprivation with a barge pole, the Volumetrics Eating Plan is just the thing for you. The diet was first developed by Barabara Rolls, PhD and professor of nutritional sciences at the Pennsylvania State University.
I
of the first category. small portions: Bread, desserts, cheese and fatty meats make up this category and are best consumed in even smaller portions. Rare indulgence: Limit your consumption of items such as butter, candy and fried foods to smaller portions, eaten as infrequently as possible.
What is it?
Why it WoRks
This diet makes only one promise — you can eat till you are full and still lose weight. It is based on the principle that you must eat smaller quantities of food that has a high energy density and more of those items that have a lower energy density. This might seem confusing, but high energy density simply means more calories for a smaller amount (quantity) of food, whereas low energy density means fewer calories for a greater volume or quantity of food. The idea is to increase your intake of foods with a low energy density and lower your consumption of food that has a higher density of calories for a relatively small portion size.
When you think about it, The Volumetrics Eating Plan is based simply on eating sensibly, without depriving yourself of any food types. Moderation is key, as is the fact that you pick foods that deliver fewer calories per bite. You don't have to deprive yourself of any food, which ensures that you get all the fibre and nutrients you need, but lose weight at the same time because your calorie consumption reduces. Also, studies suggest that simply seeing a full plate can make you feel full. This diet is built largely on this premise, as you are more likely to feel full when you are able to eat everything as opposed to a juice cleanse where each meal is substituted by a glass of juice. When you are satiated, you are more likely to stick to the diet for longer. The best part about this diet is that it doesn't involve any exotic ingredients or preparations. You can use it in accordance to your food sensibilities and by making simple substitutions that are easy to get hold of, you can begin your journey towards weight loss.
What do you have to do? The diet suggests you eat three meals, two snacks and a dessert, every day. Your goal has to be to try and eat foods that are going to keep you full for longer and contain fewer calories. To make your life simpler, there are four general categories that the diet encompasses, so you know exactly how much of what type of food you should be eating. any time foods: This category includes broth-based soups, fruits (especially those with a higher water content such as watermelons) and vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, tomatoes, cucumbers, mushrooms and spinach. There is no limit on the quantity that you can consume of these items and so, you can fill up as much as you want on these foods. in moderation: This category includes whole wheat pasta, lean meats such as chicken and fish, pulses, brown rice and low-fat diary products. You are advised to eat these items, but make sure you are eating them in moderation and in a quantity less than that
Make it WoRk foR you If you think adding fruits and vegetables to everything is too tedious, we assure you that it is only a matter of getting used to. Stock up on ready-to-use salad leaves, fruits and airy snacks. By airy snacks, we mean that instead of eating a handful of banana chips at 4pm, eat four handfuls of popcorn, as it contains fewer calories. Since popcorn is more aerated than wafers, you can eat more of it. Also, it isn't fried, so it is a much healthier option. In a nutshell, you will be able to eat a bigger portion and still consume fewer calories. hether you've got a fever or a cold, the old adage, 'Feed a cold, starve a fever' shouldn't be something you live by. A balanced diet is essential no matter what you're suffering from and in fact, nutritious foods will help you recover from any illness much faster than starving yourself or overeating will. But, when you're coughing and sneezing, the last thing you want to do is get up and eat anything, least of all a healthy meal. If you've been living off soup and telling yourself you're not hungry because you're ill, we're going to forgive you — because we've all been there! While we still suggest trying to maintain your diet through your illness, we’re also telling you why your appetite will seem like it’s disappearing along with your good health. It's not really that complicated. When you have a headache, your eyes hurt from the strain of reading, right? Similarly, when you're sick, you use most of your energy to fight the illness. Unfortunately, you also use this energy to digest your food. So, the drop in appetite frees up a little of the energy you will need in order to fight the illness. But, avoiding all food will make you lose weight in an unhealthy manner, so make sure you don't let it get the better of you. On the other hand, an illness will often impair your sense of smell and taste. This means that food won’t smell as appetising (if you have a cold, you won't smell it at all!) and it will taste less than perfect, often bland and boring. This leaves you with very little motivation to actually get up and have a bite. So, although your body needs the food to survive, since your brain is not registering the yummy smells and tastes, you will think you’re not feeling hungry at all. When you have a bout of nausea, smelling food will actually make you feel worse! In the short term, a loss of appetite is just your body’s way of dealing with an illness, leaving energy for you to recover and cutting down on any bugs or substances that the bacteria would otherwise feed on. But, it also deprives your body of the nutrition it needs to recover after you’ve warded off the disease. So, if you find your appetite lacking when you're ill, don’t worry too much, but make sure you don't succumb to it for the entire duration of your illness.

If you've gotten all the answers right, you know enough about oral health and your teeth and gums. But, if you've gotten quite a few wrong, you should pay attention to facts about your dental health. 1. Your gums are an indication of more than just oral hygiene. Gum disease can be a symptom or a result of medical problems such as oral cancer, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. This is why regular dental check-ups can help diagnose complications in other parts of your body.

gOOdBye alzheimer's Several studies have found that by reading, you're reducing your risk of suffering from memory impairments such as Alzheimer's disease. Although this is not a cure or a sure-shot method to avoid it, it will go a long way in making sure your chances are lower than if you didn't read.
9
2. Apart from lifestyle habits (such as smoking), one of the major reasons for foul breath is the interaction of the bacteria in your mouth with food particles. Food that is stuck in your teeth gives bacteria an opportunity to react with food particles, making your breath smell bad. 3. The belief that there can be too much of a good thing is true. Brushing too vigorously or more than twice a day will wear down the protective enamel that surrounds your teeth and increase your risk of suffering from tooth damage or decay. Instead, rinse
your mouth with plain water after every meal. 4. Chewing gum has always been a popular way to keep foul breath at bay. But, it can also ensure good dental health. It results in the formation of saliva, the lack of which can cause bad breath and tooth decay. However, remember that chewing gum cannot replace brushing, flossing and a good diet. 5. Fizzy drinks not only contain sugar (which has an indirect connection with your oral health), they also contain carbon dioxide. The acidic fizzy drinks will slowly damage the enamel on your teeth, increasing your risk of tooth decay. 6. It might seem hygienic, but it is actually the opposite. Think of it this way — after you have a bath, you don't store your towel in a closed compartment to keep it ‘safe’ from the air, do you? Similarly, using a toothbrush cap will actually trap in the moisture and allow bacteria to breed. If you must, ensure that the bristles are completely dry before you put the cap on. 7. This is simple logic — the toothbrush you use when
you have a cold or the flu has germs hidden in its bristles. This could put you at risk of getting re-infected with the disease. So, change your brush once you have recovered. 8. This is a common mistake. We concentrate on our teeth but forget about our tongues, which leads to tiny food particles and bacteria staying on them. This also causes bad breath. 9. Yes, we know that in school we were taught that adult human beings have 32 teeth, but four of them are wisdom teeth (which don’t always come out). So, if you don't have a full set, there is no reason for you to be worried, unless your dentist tells you otherwise. 10. Tooth decay is caused by the bacteria in your mouth interacting with sugar to produce an acid that can damage the enamel coating on your teeth. However, if you make sure that the sugar doesn't stay in your mouth for too long (this is why rinsing your mouth with water after meals is recommended), the bacteria won't have the chance to form the harmful acid.

Play to lose...
... calories of course! Do you constantly look for new ways to make your workout more fun? Dev Goswami tells you about some calorie burning summer sports
T
here is something about summer that makes you want to spend all your time outdoors (albeit, not under the scorching sun). But, when it comes to working out, you don't have to limit yourself to exercising in the park or jogging around your neighbourhood. There are several sports and activities that will keep you fit and entertained at the same time. We give you a low-down:
FootbAll Football, an adrenaline pumping sport, is one of the best ways to stay fit while making summer more fun. An hour of football can burn anywhere between 900-1 ,000 calories. It is hardly surprising that this sport finds itself at the top of our list, as sprinting and dodging defenders will help improve your stamina, strengthen your lower body and improve balance. Do take short breaks while playing though; this sport can get quite intense and you might injure yourself.
Swimming Compared to other sports and activities, swimming doesn't burn too many calories — an hour in the pool will see you burning 500-800 calories. But, swimming is recommended for two important reasons. One, nothing beats the summer heat more than a session in the swimming pool and two, because it is one of those rare sports that will give you a complete body workout. From your back, neck and shoulders to your core, lower body and even chest, swimming will work all the different muscle groups.
bADminton Badminton is a great way to burn all the excess fat in your body. This is because badminton is an anaerobic sport, which means that while playing it,
>> Football is a great body toning sport that burns up to 1,000 calories an hour
your body will use up all its stored fat (energy) as fuel. As far as the calories burnt are concerned, they can range from 300-600 calories, depending on your weight. One of the best ways to get the most out of the sport is to play singles instead of doubles. Having to cover the entire court on your own will act as an intense workout.
CyCling Cycling seems like an innocent activity, but you'd be surprised to know that an hour-long session of cycling can burn 800-900 calories. Cycling has a distinct advantage over running (which will burn around the same number of calories in an hour), as in addition to your lower body, this activity also works your abs. Warm up at a slow pace before you move on to a higher intensity.
bASkEtbAll Just like football, you can improve your mind-body coordination with basketball. This sport burns around 500-600 calories an hour and effectively increases your body's flexibility and endurance. The sport also keeps your heart healthy.
Hiking Hiking is an activity that might not burn a lot of calories (around 400 calories per hour), but it benefits you in more ways than one. It acts as a break from the rat-race of the city and will improve your mental well-being. However, that does not mean that you won’t get any fitness benefits. Gather a group of dedicated hikers and you can make it a high-intensity workout. Choose terrains with a lot of slopes and carry a heavy backpack — this will truly test your endurance. However, do make sure that you've attempted relatively easy hikes before you try your hand at an intense one; otherwise you could be putting yourself in danger.
« Know more: Top 5 Tips for a summer worKouT Being hydrated is only one of the ways you can ensure a healthy summer workout. Radhika R. gives you some more tips Pick a time: Selecting the perfect time for a summer workout is very important. Pick a slot between early morning or late evening, when the temperatures are lower and the sun is not out yet. Cold shower: We know it’s a little absurd to shower before your workout, but cold water will help keep your body cool, leaving you feeling more refreshed once you have finished your workout. Dress light: White and other light colours deflect heat and absorb body moisture (especially cotton), helping you
to work out comfortably while keeping your body cool. Seek shade: Now, this may be obvious, but it’s very important to choose a spot that has enough shade and is as far as possible from the sun. Apply sunscreen: Do you perspire when you work out during summer? Use water-resistant sunscreen, as it will stay put for longer. Re-apply it if you've been working out for more than an hour. Plan it out: Summer isn’t the best time to push yourself. If your daily regime consists of working out for an hour,
break it down to 20 minutes, three times a day, or 30 minutes, twice every day. Slowing down the pace of your workout will also help. Eat less: Diet forms a big part of your daily workout. Try to eat less immediately after a workout and include more fruit and vegetable juices to make up for the loss of fluids. Switch workouts: Water workouts are advisable to beat the heat. They will tone your muscles, keep you fit and also keep your body cool.

H
omoeopathy has always been a treatment surrounded by skeptics and the stream doesn't have the best reputation amongst doctors or patients. But, several studies have touted it to be a safe, dependable and effective method of treatment. Dr. Batra explains, “Homoeopathy focuses on the individual that is suffering from the illness — not merely the illness in isolation. It has drawn admiration from unbiased conventional (allopathic) practitioners and has millions of patients worldwide. Its growing acceptance can be gauged from the fact that according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), it is already the world’s second largest medical system.” While skeptics continue to argue about it consisting of nothing but belief medicine and placebo effects, studies have shown that the method in fact, does work extremely well and is not just a placebo, is not anything like faith healing and has several more good things going for it than bad, even if it does take a little longer to deliver results than an antibiotic.
the benefits Dr. Batra tells us why homoeopathy is such a good option: l No one has ever died from taking homoeopathy. It is accepted, even by its critics, to have no side effects. This is in sharp contrast to conventional medicine. Latrogenic or drug-induced disease is an entire category of illness. In the US alone, conventional drugs are the third largest killing agents, after heart attacks and other illnesses. l An observational study of 6,544 patients, during a 6-year period featuring over 23,000 homoeopathic consultations, was published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine a few years ago. Its results showed that 70.7% of the patients reported positive health changes, with 50.7% recording their improvement as ‘better’ or ‘much better.’ Of the 1,270 children that were treated, 80.5% showed some improvement, while 65.8% were ‘better’ or ‘much better.’ l The Experience of Care and Health Outcomes [ECHO] in Europe, has also demonstrated the therapeutic efficacy of homoeopathic treatment. 19 publications, using validated scores for quality of life [QoL], evaluated the effectiveness of homoeopathic medicines in 19,804 patients. Results showed that homoeopathy is as efficient as conventional medicine in general practice. the bottom line Did all of the statistics confuse you? The bottom line is homoeopathy — still a growing trend in India — is safe, effective and has even been used for epidemics. Dr. Batra explains this, telling us, “American Institute of Homoeopathy’s journal, reported that during a major outbreak of meningitis in Brazil in 1974, 18,640 patients were given the homoeopathic nosode, Meningococcinum (which is prepared from the diseased tissue), as a preventative. Only four cases of meningitis were reported in this group. On the contrary, 6,340 people, who formed the control group and did not receive any treatment, developed 32 cases. The homoeopathic efficacy was evident.” Put under scrutiny and backed by these numbers, homoeopathy seems to have fared pretty well. Overall, it seems like it's a good option, that can deliver the results it promises.

Staying clean & clear If you’re a busy woman, you probably wipe off your makeup with a cleansing wipe at the end of a tiring day. But, are cleansing milks a better option? Radhika R. finds out >> Cleansing wipes are quite handy and are a great option for a girl-on-the-go
Dear Barbara, While I am not troubled by the acne on my face, I've noticed that my back has started developing tiny zits. I used to have facial acne a few years ago, but it disappeared after I started taking good care of my skin. Now, these acne spots have cropped up on my back and I don't know what to do. In fact, I don't even know if it's acne. Please help. — khush ahuja, Mahim Dear khush, What you're talking about is called back acne (often abbreviated to bacne) — don't worry, it's normal! Since you mentioned that your face isn't affected by acne, it's possible that you haven't been taking proper care of your back. But, don't worry as there is an easy way out for you. Start exfoliating and scrubbing your back regularly with a loofah (once/ twice week will do). Make sure that you aren't too harsh as that could irritate your skin. For back acne, ensuring that you wash your back properly every day should be enough. But, if that doesn't help, you should see a dermatologist who will be able to prescribe you with cream or medication.
F >> Blisters on your lips are a sign of an infection Dear Barbara, For the past few days, I've been suffering from tiny blisters all over my lips. They hurt when I press the area and some of the them have swollen up. My lips look quite unsightly and no amount of makeup helps hide the blisters. Can you tell me what I am suffering from and what I can do about it? — Malvika Menon, andheri Dear Malvika, From what you've described, it seems like you're suffering from cold sores. It is a type of an infection that is caused by the herpes simplex virus. Sadly, there is no treatment for the infection. However, the good news is that it usually disappears on its own in two-three weeks. If you're in a lot of pain, you should visit a dermatologist, who will tell you what treatment to opt for in order to ease the pain. You can also try this trick to hide the blisters — apply a coat of petroleum jelly on your lips, followed by a coat of the cream recommended by your dermatologist. Then apply concealer over your lips. This will help you to hide your condition.
or years we have been told by beauty experts to remove all traces of makeup before we go to sleep. This is because it's important for our pores to breathe as we catch up on our beauty sleep. In fact, there are several such rules that help keep our face clean; “don’t wash your face with your hands, you are only spreading the dirt;” “don’t rub your face vigorously, you will develop wrinkles sooner than you think;” “don’t use a face cloth, it will increase acne on your face”... The instructions have been never-ending. But, when cleansing wipes hit the market, it made us wonder whether spending so much time using cleansing milk to keep our faces clean all these years was just unnecessary. With more and more women accepting the pre-packaged cleansing wipe solution, it seems like cleansing wipes are here to stay. Taking advantage of the growing trend, wipes are common place in retail stores, with each cosmetic brand introducing with their own version. You don’t have to be an expert or a specialist to understand the effectiveness and ease of using a cleansing wipe. But, nobody can argue with the age-old formula of removing your makeup with cleansing milk either. So, which one is better for your skin? We list out the advantages and disadvantages of each, so you can understand what is
best, in order to ensure that you are left with glowing skin.
Cleansing Wipes These easy-to-use wipes come in a plastic pouch and are a beauty must-have in every girl’s handbag. They are apt for days when you are extremely tired and want to skip the whole cleanse-washmoisturise routine. l They are perfect for travelling and cleaning your face on-the-go. Since they don't require any water, you can use them anywhere. l Cleansing wipes are a good option for people who don’t spend too much time on skin care. With all the ingredients available in a single wipe, they are a quick and easy makeup removal option. l Several women consider hygiene to be another benefit of using a wipe. Since you don’t touch your face, wipes help cleanse without you having to worry about contaminating your skin with germs from your hands. l Wipes may be convenient, but they fail when it comes to deep cleansing.
l
Cleansing Milks l Cleansing milks scrub off the grime instantly and keep your skin supple. l They work best on dry skin, as they don’t
use chemicals to remove makeup and you won’t run the risk of side-effects. l They cleanse your face effectively and help remove dead skin cells, which can reveal a radiant complexion almost instantly. l One of the disadvantages is that they require a lot of paraphernalia, including cotton, water and a towel to dab your face dry. So, cleansing milks aren't the best option when you are on-the-go. l It can be difficult to go through the cleansing-moisturising routine at the end of a tiring day. The process is tedious and can get exhausting.
Our COnClusiOn Now that you know the pros and cons of each, we think you’ll agree that it’s best to use cleansing wipes and cleansing milk as a team. Wipes are effective to quickly get rid of makeup at the end of the day. But, they don't cleanse your skin inside-out, which means that there are still remnants of dirt and makeup left behind, leading to skin problems in the long run. Using a good cleansing milk after you use a wipe will get rid of leftover dirt. Washing your face with water will keep your face squeaky clean. If you are not the sort of person who uses makeup often, using just cleansing milk is enough as long as you follow it up with a wash.

India, Japan meeting on amphibious aircraft deal N
EW DELHI: India will discuss procurement of the Japanese US-2 amphibious aircraft during the working-level meeting between the two sides in Tokyo on Wednesday. The meeting comes soon after Japan removed its self-imposed ban on exporting defence equipment to other countries. India and Japan have been discussing the sale of these aircraft for quite some time now but the talks were held up as Japan was expressing unwillingness to sell defence equipment along with the planes, defence officials told PTI. The first meeting of the Joint Working Group was held in December in India on the proposed sale of the amphibious aircraft required by the Navy to look after its island territories in Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep. As per Japan's new policy on defence equipment sale, it will prohibit the export of weapons to countries involved in conflicts. With restrict screening, Japan will allow arms exports only if they serve the purpose of contributing to international cooperation and its security interests, according to the new rule.

large number of UAE- based NRIs are expected to increase their investments inflows into India after the country's upcoming general elections, according to a new survey. Titled 'The NRIs' Investment Inflows into India – A Pulse Study', the survey states that two-thirds of NRI respondents were optimistic that a new government will create a conducive environment for investor-friendly retirement planning in India. A majority of the respondents believed that any new Indian leadership would bring about positive regulatory developments which would lead to more foreign invest-
ments, financial services reforms, better infrastructure and ultimately greater economic growth, the survey by Standard Life - a leading long term savings and investments company – reported. "It is interesting to note that the NRI community looks to increase their investments in India after this period of perceived pre-election uncertainty regardless of any changes," said Chris Divito, CEO Standard Life International Limited (DIFC Branch). "Such situations are not uncommon in other markets where capital flows can sometimes reduce as investors wait for greater clarity on how any policy changes will affect the plans individuals make for how they will save and invest over
the longer term and any changes to tax or remittance," he said. With significant economic clout, the UAE's sizable Indian community can be seen as a natural source for inward investments into India as most make investments and plan for retirement in their home country. Like most expatriates, NRIs are seen to be committed towards building wealth and securing their financial future. The survey also noted that NRI investments were spread across a wide range of asset classes, including formal savings schemes (45 %), long-term investments plans (30 %), formally constituted retirement plans (26 %) and governmentbacked infrastructure funds (15 %).
BJP Should Reconsider Stance On FDI In Multi-Brand Retail: ASSOCHAM By A Business Reporter

midst high expectations for much-needed revival of the economic growth, the BJP’s focus in its election manifesto on giving a boost to economy, rationalising and simplification of taxation and restoring investor confidence would be a morale booster, said the Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM). However, the ASSOCHAM would continue to impress upon the BJP to reconsider its stand on FDI in
multi-brand retail- as the move will only act as a multiplier effect on India’s economy without impacting in any way the neighbourhood kirana stores. As for the taxation reforms, the industry would urge the BJP to take a lead in building a political consensus between the Centre and the states on the crucial reform of the Goods and Services Tax. We are also encouraged by the party’s focus on building important infrastructure and giving a boost to urbanisation by building 100 new
Office Space Demand Drops By A Business Reporter
O
BUSINESS
ffice space demand slowed down in the first quarter of 2014, with around 6.3 million sq. ft. of office space getting absorbed across the leading cities of the country as against 6.6 million sq. ft. in Q1 2013—a drop of approximately 5%. Transaction activity was dominated by the National Capital Region (NCR), Bangalore and Chennai—representing about 70% of the total space transacted during the quarter. The IT/ITeS, financial and services segments continued to drive demand for office space, according to the findings of CBRE’s latest report,India Office MarketView Q1 2014. New office space supply in the leading cities was also affected due to existing vacancy levels and lower demand. About 6.6 million sq. ft. of fresh office space was completed in Q1 2014, compared to about 10 million sq. ft. in Q1 2013—a y-o-y decline of about 34%. Bangalore led project completions, followed by Delhi NCR and Mumbai—together contributing to more than 80% of
the total office space addition in the quarter under review. Commenting on the findings of the report Anshuman Magazine, Chairman and Managing Director, CBRE South Asia Pvt. Ltd. said, “Occupiers continue to remain focused on optimal space utilization and cost saving strategies. Going forward, demand is likely to be concentrated mostly in the peripheral micro-markets of leading cities, owing to abundant availability of cost effective quality space options. The upcoming General Elections and the formation of a new government are expected to affect the corporate market as well. In the short to medium term, we can expect firms in the IT/ITeS, banking/financial services and pharmaceuticals to remain key contributors to overall office space absorption across major cities.” Rental trends exhibited mixed sentiments across micro-markets on q-o-q basis. Rental values in the Central Business Districts of Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Pune appreciated in the range of 2–5% q-oq due to increasing occupier
cities. “The commitment by the BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi to put governance and growth ahead of other issues, is the most welcome development,” the Chamber President Rana Kapoor said. He said the ASSOCHAM is fully committed to cooperate with the new government for full-scale revival of the economy which will be achieved by addressing the issues of inflation, unemployment, growth and the focus on revitalizing the manufacturing sector.

Small States Creation May Not Catalyse Economic Growth

or the first time Patel Cultural Foundation organised the Girnar Festival of classical dance and music. The five-day festival of classical dance, vocal and instrumental music was a fine platform for performers, who had gathered from various parts of the country in order to showcase their talent. While some of performers rendered excellent performances, there were others who were partially pleasing. The credit for a good show definitely goes to M.K. Patel of Patel Cultural Foundation. The performers were Bhimanna Jadhav, Namrata Gupta, Grishma Lele, Nirali Kartik, Rajendra Solanki, Mrinal Upadhyay, Satyender Solanki, Sujata Nair, Rahuldev Mondal, Mayur Vaidya, Monica Shah, Janhavi Behra, Bijal Haria, Shuchismita and Debopriya Chatterjee, Nitin Shirale, Uddhav Rao Appegoankar, Gulzar Husain, Debasish Pattnaik, Prachi Saathi, Salma Ghosh, Leena Malakar, Hridev Ray, Satish Krishnaamurthy, Anuratn Rai, Revathi S., Vipul Trivedi and Rajendra Chaturvedi. After the Sundari recital, which is similar to the Shehnai, by Bhimanna Jadhav, the audience was taken to the land of Odissi as young talented danseuse Namrata Gupta performed elegantly, exposing the pure dance and the typical Odissi characteristic movements in the 'Hamshdhwani Pallavi', followed by 'Vaishnavao Janto' that propagated securalism and the union of all religions, choreographed by Namrata's mentor Guru Daksha

Music beyond boundries L
By Amarendra Dhaneshwar
ast week we got our music fix from beyond borders, with Persian classical music on the Iranian santoor by exponent Paul Grant of Switzerland. The event was organised by Sangit Mahabharati. Grant is an authority on this instrument, excelling in three different forms of music - Hindustani, Kashmiri Sufiyana and Iranian classical music. The santoor is found in all these streams of music. Persian music, in particular, is a highly developed and refined form of classical music, with its Maqaam system running on parallel principles of the Indian raga expositions. The use of microtones is done with subtle nuances, creating a dreamy effect. Grant has played a number of times in Mumbai before and has received a lot of appreciation. He has done jugalbandi concerts with Nayan Ghosh who is not only a front ranking tabla player but also a highly competent sitarist. At this concert Paul Grant played only Persian music and that too without accompaniment of any kind. It was an educative experience for the audience. Another overseas musician who enthraled us at the monthly programme organised by Dadar Matunga Cultural Centre was Pritam Bhattacharjee, a young but
accomplished classical singer from Atlanta, USA. He performed at the evening concert. Bhattacharjee originally belongs to Assam where his prodigious talents were noticed by Mewati gharana maestro Jasraj who was on a concert tour there 20 years ago. The maestro immediately took him under his wings and trained him. Bhattacharjee topped many competitions and was sent to the US by the Vedic Heritage Foundation. He has been teaching and performing there since 2003. He has often given vocal support to Jasraj. Last year, his spirited performance at the Alladiya Khan festival at Chembur earned him a number of fans. Bhattacharjee sang khyals in 'Bhimpalasi', 'Yaman', 'Bihag' and 'Nagdhwani Kanada' in this programme. He was in fine fettle from the beginning to the end. He has a good command of the fast phrases and a pleasing stage presence. His voice sounds genuine as he sings and he does not croon which makes his recital enjoyable. He was accompanied on the harmonium by Niranjan Lele and on the tabla by Prithviraj Bhattacharjee who is a US-based tabla player.

Bijal Haria
Mashruwala. Namrata is charming and can aspire to scale great heights as a dancer. Another dancer from Ahmedabad who created a lasting impression with her vivacious performance was Bijal Haria. Bijal is a disciple of renowned exponent Guru Smita Shastri. Bijal's rendering of the 'Mandooka Sabdam' and the 'Tarangam' won her loud applause from the audience. Tall and beautiful, Bijal can become a top exponent, if she continues to dance with the same amount of passion and zeal. The male dancers who featured in the festival were Debasish Pattanaik, Nitin Shirale, Rahuldev Mondal, Mayur Vaidya and Rajendra Chaturvedi. Debasish's performance has a fine combination of grace and vigour. Rahuldev and his students rendered a lively performance, noteworthy for the clarity of movements, 'akash charis' and 'karanas' in the number on Lord Shiva. Nitin, Mayur and Rajendra are excellent Kathak dancers, with their own style and competence. Sujata's Mohiniattam and Janhavi's Odissi were remarkable for the elegance and the quality of Abhinaya. Gulzar Husain's Violin recital and Satyendra Solanki's Santoor recital were brilliant, winning rare applause from the audience. Vipul Trivedi's vocal recital was commendable for the control over the 'gayaki' and the 'raag vistaar' in raag Bageshri. While Nirali Kartik is blessed with a commendable voice, Salma Ghosh dhrupad was rare and noteworthy for the distinct clarity of the raag. Satish Krishnamurthy and troupe won praise from the audience for the excellence in percussion instruments like the Mridangam.
BRIEFS and Amole Gupte. The film stars Sai Tamhankar, Vineet Raina and is produced under the banner of Ashwini Rahul Enterprises and producer Ashwini Shirsat. The film has lyrics and music by Milind Ingle.

Offers from abroad are exciting but do not promise everything that you would want from them. Your fears about the future of your relationship with your beloved could create some insecurity. It may have to do with a change of location. Rest assured that your will get some good news about it soon.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 20): There will some good news regarding some gains coming your way. A long desired ambition could also get fulfilled. Those in the artistic or creative field will do very well. There is every reason for you to celebrate and you could meet some interesting people at such a get-together. You are popular in your circle of friends but where close relationships are concerned there remains a void and a feeling of emptiness.
CANCER (June 21 - July 21): Your work will gradually begin to pick up with increase in your regular income. There will be temptations to start something new that apparently promises immediate gains. However this is not the right time to make investments or seek change in your job or work. Home and family life will be happy and relaxed.
LEO (July 22 - August 21): The excitement seems to be missing in your work environment. Seeking a change at this juncture is not advisable. Hang on to whatever resources you have right now you may need to borrow or raise a loan to meet your commitments... Things will improve soon. At a social meeting this evening, someone may try to manipulate you. Be patient for the sake of domestic peace and harmony.
VIRGO (August 22 - September 21): Try to do one thing at a time to get best results. Consolidate recent gains and try to strengthen your position at work. Those waiting for news from overseas will get favorable response. Employment-seekers will get a temporary job offer, which should be accepted. You may now realize the futility of long-standing personal association. A parting of ways cannot be ruled out. Keep a check on your health.
LIBRA (September 22 - October 22): Be alert to the fresh offers that come along. There is a good proposal in the form of job or assignment, and if you negotiate terms and conditions deftly you will settle a favorable deal. You could be in trouble for not fulfilling certain obligations required of you at home. Get on with what you have to do and other things will fall into place.
SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21): You may have to work against a lot of deadlines. But do not let that daunt you. Simply concentrate on completing your work with meticulousness and things will go your way. You will have to be extra careful in money matters whether you are borrowing or lending or investing. There could be some developments in your personal life that will bring to you a person who will become a good friend. Love is a possibility.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 December 20): You may feel that some hostile elements are conspiring against your interests. Concentrate on work and pay no heed to others. It is understandable that work conditions could be oppressive but see how things play out for a while. You will have the support of a person who matters most. Home and family life is under a cloud. You will win the day with charm diplomacy and without hurting anyone’s feelings.
CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 19): Most things seem to be working against you today. Delays in completing your current assignment on schedule may also cause a lot of tensions. You will also face financial constraints adding to your discomfiture. Travel and communication could also be a problem you seem to be involved in too many things. This could make you hyper tense and overly sensitive. Find solace in friendship.
AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18): An increase in work activities will bring in money but take its toll on your health. By taking it easy, you will not lose advantage. It is necessary to maintain cordial relations within the family so that you are able to keep a check on outside influences that harm your personal interests. Trust goes a long way in cementing ties where frequent journeys and distances are unavoidable.
PISCES (February 19 - March 20): It’s just a day when you feel that there is nothing happening and you would like to just get away. The time is not right. Even though there are many things in the pipeline that have great potential work wise, you may still be anxious about the outcome. Be patient. You may be feeling exhausted emotionally drained. You have the love and support of your beloved and family to see you through.

IRPUR: An exhausted and disappointed Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni found it tough to explain Yuvraj Singh's painstakingly slow batting in the lost World Twenty20 final against Sri Lanka but insisted that the under-fire player tried his best. Yuvraj's 21-ball 11 was a major factor in India totalling a mere 130 after being put in to bat last night. Sri Lanka overhauled the target in 17.5 overs after losing just four wickets. "It was an off day for Yuvraj. He tried his best but it's not easy to come in and start slogging from ball one," Dhoni said at the post-match press conference where most of the questions centred on Yuvraj's performance. There were a few which Dhoni completely deflected during his shortest media interaction in the whole tournament. Was there a message for Yuvraj when he got stuck in the middle, Dhoni said, "No he was just trying his best. That's the most you can do." Dhoni was specifically asked about Yuvraj's future in the team considering others have more or less performed their duties or at least have age on their side. The smiling skipper gave an openended reply. "Indian cricket season is over, and now we have all domestic tournaments including the Indian Premier League. The next selection is far away so let's not talk about it." There had been angry reactions from the fans and Dhoni got a bit serious while answering a query. "Look, you need to understand that fans can be angry but they can't
the reason for sending Yuvraj ahead of Suresh Raina at No 4. "Most of our batsmen take time to hit the big shots and it is only Raina, who can start hitting big from the onset. That was the reason that we sent Yuvi up the order at No 4."Dhoni was all praise for the Sri Lankan team, especially the manner they bowled "wide yorkers" at the death. "We wanted to score as many runs as possible in last four overs but credit to Lankan bowlers. They bowled perfect wide yorkers. I for one, know that Malinga bowls these superb wide yorkers. They got only one wide during that phase. They executed their plans brilliantly. We were a bit disappointed at the break for not having scored more than 130 but then we were thinking about Champions Trophy. It was also a 20-over match but here we had one fielder more outside the circle," the skipper said. As for why he didn't start with his best bowler Ravichandran Ashwin, Dhoni defended the move saying, "We wanted to use Ashwin in middle overs against left-handers. So we couldn't start with him. But the pacers went for runs and I had to bring him early and he also got a wicket." "Also the wicket changed a bit under lights as the ball started coming onto the bat," he added. Dhoni named captain of ICC World T20 team D
UBAI: His side may have lost in the final but Mahendra Singh Dhoni was today named captain of the 2014 ICC World Team of the Tournament that figures four Indians, including star batsman Virat Kohli. Opener Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin are the other
two Indian players who feature in the team that was announced by the ICC. Kohli was adjudged Player of the Tournament for amassing 319 runs with the help of four half centuries, including knocks of 72 and 77 in the semifinal and final of the showpiece event. Besides Indians, the team has two

CHANDIGARH: Yuvraj Singh's father Yograj has come out in defence of his son, saying the left-handed batsman, who struggled for his 11 runs off 21 balls, should not be singled out for India's loss in the ICC World Twenty20 final. "Yuvraj should not be singled out," Yograj said when asked if his son consuming 21 deliveries was the main reason behind India losing the title clash against Sri Lanka in Mirpur. He said when a team loses, there is widespread criticism from all quarters. "When we lose there is criticism from all sides. Ups and downs are a part of life and part of
this game as well," he said. Referring to the lean patch Yuvraj has gone through in recent times, Yograj said, "When a player goes through a lean patch, the state of mind becomes such that he starts thinking if he does not make runs he may be out of the team or the team may lose. When West Indies lost the 1983 World Cup to India, Sir Viv Richards went to the Indian dressing room and congratulated the team saying they played better cricket and deserved to win," he said, adding that the sportsman's spirit in the game was more important. He felt Yuvraj should play more domestic cricket.
players from both South Africa and West Indies, and one representative each from Australia, the Netherlands and champions Sri Lanka. Chosen by a select group of experts, the team was aimed at being suited for Bangladesh conditions, on the basis of performances in the tournament only. Statistics were used but were not the sole basis for selections. Selection Panel Chairman and member of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees, David Boon, said of the selection: "It was a very difficult task for the panel to pick a team of 11 from the exciting players who featured in this tournament.” The Team: Rohit Sharma (India) – 200 runs, Stephan Myburgh (Netherlands) – 224 runs, Virat Kohli (India) – 319 runs, JP Duminy (South Africa) – 187 runs, Glenn Maxwell (Australia) – 147 runs, MS Dhoni (India captain, wicketkeeper) – 50 runs, six dismissals, Darren Sammy (West Indies) – 101 runs, Ravichandran Ashwin (India) – 11 wickets, Dale Steyn (South Africa) – nine wickets, Samuel Badree (West Indies) – 11 wickets, Lasith Malinga (Sri Lanka) – five wickets, 12th Player: Krishmar Santokie (West Indies) – eight wickets.

Feel humble after World T20 triumph: Sangakkara
MIRPUR: Emotionally overwhelmed after signing off his Twenty20 international career with the world title, Sri Lankan veteran Kumar Sangakkara said the triumph left him feeling humble about his own abilities and grateful towards the game of cricket. It turned out to be a fitting farewell for Sangakkara and his other illustrious teammate Mahela Jayawardene as Sri Lanka triumphed at the ICC World T20, beating India by six wickets in the title clash here on Sunday night. Asked about his feelings having won the Cup, he understandably thrilled. "It's amazing. I can't explain it. This is the first time that I have been a part of a team that has won a World Cup. We'd been disappointed four times before. It's hard to describe exactly what you feel, but you feel humble," said the veteran batsman, who was named man of the match for his 52-run knock in the game. "You realise how difficult it is to get here, how much support you need, not just from your teammates, but from your family, your fans, the support staff. You can never do anything alone. You may be the best batsman in the world or the best bowler in the world, but you can't do anything without support. At moments like this, you have to look back, reflect and be thankful for that support, because without that you wouldn't be here," he added. The 36-year-old former captain said it was the perfect way to sign off. "It's been an amazing journey. It's time to walk away, and to walk away like this is even better," Sangakkara said, wearing his Man-of-the-Match medal proudly. "I don't think the game owes us, or any player, anything. Our job is to try and play it as best as we can and walk away, hopefully having made a positive impact. The game gives us the opportunities and it's up to us to try and take them," Sangakkara said at the post-match press conference.
PUNE FC EAGER TO KEEP QUALIFICATION HOPES ALIVE SPORTS
N
AY PYI TAW: Pune FC will be eager to keep their hopes of qualification to the AFC Cup knockout stage alive when they face Myanmar-side Nay Pyi Taw FC in a crucial Group-H Round-5 encounter at the Paung Luang Stadium, in Nay Pyi Taw on Tuesday. Going into the game on the back of two consecutive losses at home in different competitions, Pune FC will be keen to shrug off their disappointing run and will seek their first ever win on the continental stage. Moreover, with qualification hopes now hanging by a thread, Pune FC (4th, 2 pts) will hope to bounce back to winning ways after losing backto-back games against Singapore’s Tampines Rovers at the turn over point of the group stage. On the other hand, Nay Pyi Taw (3rd, 4 pts) too comes into the game on the back of a disappointing run in the competition. After drawing their opening game 2-2 in Pune, Nay Pyi Taw beat Tampines in Myanmar before losing back-toback games against group leaders Kitchee SC at home and away. Thus the clash on the morrow will be an equally crucial one for both sides to keep their aspirations of a second place finish alive. Nay Pyi Taw are currently sitting top of the Myanmar National League with six wins in nine games and will hope to

EW DELHI: Sahara Force India deputy team principal Robert Fernley expects his team to remain in podium contention after the Silverstonesquad achieved its first Formula 1 top-three finish in five years at the Bahrain Grand Prix. Sergio Perez held off the challenge from Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo and finished the 57-lap race on Sunday in third place, just 0.422 seconds ahead of the Australian who was on the softer tyres. Perez’s teammate Nico Hulkenberg finished fifth giving
Force India 25 points from the race, their best showing in F1. “There is every reason to expect further podiums from Force India. All teams are still working on optimising their power units and aero performance and we too will be working on improving the car,” Fernley told PTI from Bahrain, a day after his team stepped on the podium only for the second time. Giancarlo Fisichella had come second for the team at Spa in 2009. Force India also runs on Mercedes engines.

MANAMA: FIA president Jean Todt has promised to look into improving the sound of Formula One’s new engines but dismissed a change in the rules demanded by some stables. Todt, the head of the world sport’s governing body, said that those who were complaining about the lack of noise from the engines were more vocal than those in favour. But he said he was ready to meet with reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel who bluntly swore when asked about the sound of the new engine. “Vettel made a negative comment about the engine noise, but not on the engines,” said Todt. “He’s an icon of our sport, four-time world champion ... if he came to me about the noise problem I would listen because he is qualified to talk about it.
We’re examining this problem with three engine manufacturers involved in F1. We’re seeing if we can make it noisier.” The Frenchman said however that for the rules to be changed midseason it would require the unanimous approval of all teams. “We need the unanimous agreement of stables, otherwise we can’t change anything. We are in a competitive world.”
World Cup team may be different from Europe tour squad: Walsh N
EW DELHI: India chief hockey coach Terry Walsh said that the team composition for next month’s World Cup may not be the same as the squad accompanying him for the preparatory tour to Europe beginning on Wednesday. A 21-member Indian team will take part in the five build-up games in The Hague, Netherlands from April 9-19 ahead of the May
31 to June 15 World Cup, to be held in the same Dutch city. “Trying to give equal opportunities to everyone and might be so it will not be the same squad for the World Cup,” Walsh said after the training session at Major Dhyanchand Stadium here. “We are trying to get the team perform as a unit for 5 matches which will be important. While there are opportunities for players who are going for tour and even plenty of opportunities who are staying back. Guys who are staying back will work on their areas of concern. Pressure will be
on both who will be going and who stay back,” he said. Walsh said that goalkeeping was an area the team was working hard on and trying to get specialisation. “We are doing our level best. We looked at the recently culminated National Championship final in Lucknow and there were players of good quality. Some goalkeeper’s which selectors are discussing.” Captain Sardar Singh said, “Many new techniques have been introduced during our practice session which includes lift-
ing, ariel ball deflection and placing ball well and effectively. There is huge emphasis on fitness and goal keeping training and the understanding between us has improved a lot. “In the past when we used to tackle a lift, we usually used to take the hockey stick back and then swing which used to result in wastage of time. Now we have learnt and put in place this problem where we tackle the lift immediately without taking the swing of the hockey back which puts us in a better position today.”
Distraught Pistorius apologises from the witness stand P
RETORIA: Oscar Pistorius fought through tears to apologise to the family of his slain girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, as he took the witness stand in his defence. Stammering and with his jaw trembling, Pistorius told the court he did not intend to kill his 29-year-old lover on Valentine's Day last year. The Paralympic gold medallist is accused of premeditated murder, but claims he shot the model though a locked toilet door believing she was an intruder. "I want to
take this opportunity to apologise to Mr and Mrs Steenkamp," he said, at times barely audible as he sobbed. "I was trying to protect Reeva, I want people to know that she was loved when she went to bed that night." In the tribunal Steenkamp's mother June, flanked by other relatives, sat stony-faced during the apology. She has for weeks sat through gruesome evidence, including brutal images of her dead daughter. can ever suffice," he continued. The athlete cut a broken and emotional figure as he spoke publicly for the first time about events on the night Steenkamp died. "I've had terrible nightmares," he said since the night of the shooting, adding, "I wake up at night smelling blood." He also said that since the shooting he has taken sleeping pills and anti-depressants. Pistorius told the court that on one occasion after waking in the middle of the night he crawled into
a cupboard because he was so scared. After five weeks of prosecution testimony, Monday was the first day of Pistorius's defence. After calling a pathologist, Pistorius took to the stand, outlining about his problems since the shooting and his early life growing up disabled and without his father present. "My mother had a lot of security concerns, we grew up in a family where my father wasn't around much, she would often get scared at night, she would phone the police."
