MANMOHAN SINGH BELIEVED
HE WAS ‘ACCIDENTAL’
By A Staff Reporter
E
very major prime minister in India, not counting the “Gujrals and the Chowdhurys”, came to power because the previous prime minister had died. But they never considered themselves accidental. Manmohan Singh actually believed he was. Sanjaya Baru, former media adviser and chief spokesman to PM Manmohan Singh for four years during his ten-year term, was answering a question on why he had titled his book, The Accidental Prime Minister, thus. In it, he discusses UPA 1, Singh’s style of functioning, his uneasy relationship with prime ministers and later with Sonia Gandhi. At a discussion on the book yesterday in Mumbai, packed with equal parts of business and Page 3, he said that the criticism of his book as a hatchet job on the mild-mannered PM seemed to focus only on introduction and epilogue and largely ignored the 13 numbered chapters which were “all very complimentary” to Mr Singh. But it was pretty clear that few in the audience bought this claim, nor the one about why he had written the book five years after he left the PMO, or even why it had to be published right now when his ex-boss was under tremendous stress in a no-holds barred campaign
that seized upon the book to do him even more damage. The publishers dunnit, Baru said. Other interesting snippets emerged in the course of the discussion that saw copy after copy disappearing into the hands of readers who might not actually go through the tome, but wanted the author’s signature at all costs! There were remarks that it was strange the book carried little or nothing about India Inc, given that Mr Singh’s accomplishments in the sphere of economics and finance were undeniable. There was talk about the phenomenon of two centres of power, a phenomenon peculiar to India. Nor is this the first time it has surfaced with such a vengeance. During Nehru’s time as prime minister, Acharya Kripalani resigned as President of the Congress Party because the former refused to answer to him. Indira Gandhi finally came out of the shadows of the party and turned from being a ‘goongi gudiya’ to one of the most powerful prime ministers the country has ever had. At the state level, only West Bengal and then Maharashtra, suffered from twin power centres. The first was Jyoti Basu, who as chief minister of Bengal, was still “required to go to Alimuddin Street in Kolkata, headquarters of the CPM, to report to general secretary
Promod Dasgupta. After the latter died, however, no one tried to re-assert his power with Basu. And in Maharashtra, the story of chief minister Manohar Joshi and his remote control at Matoshree is too well-known to bear repeating. Why did Mr Singh not quit over the scams, was another question, to which Baru answered that he received no complaints, so they were handled at ministry level! However, later, Baru claims, he advised him to quit and even his daughter concurred in an SMS. Does he think the PM has read the book? “I know he has, but he has not contacted me,” said Baru, adding more than a little artfully, that he had written the introduction out of respect for Mr Singh, and the epilogue out of respect for his readers. He seemed to find only one question silly but was made to answer it anyway by author Rama Bijapurkar, who was moderating the event. Veteran journalistVinod Mehta called the book “a job application.” So would he be applying for his job back with the new government, asked the well-known Bachi Karkaria. “I have never gone back to the same job,” he said, primly. Would he agree that in reacting so sharply to the book, the PMO had proved his best marketer? Predictably, there was no answer to that question either!

regular galaxy of activists, former government servants and private citizens got together at the Indian Merchants’ Chamber to take the first important step towards citizens’ empowerment in Maharashtra. Held under the auspices of Lok Adhikar, a citizen’s movement that was launched in April this year, it discussed how to create awareness about a little-known Act which, if well implemented, could bring about a dramatic change in the quality of pub-
lic services in Maharashtra. The official title is the ‘Government Servants Regulation of Transfers and Prevention of Delay in Discharge of Official Duties Act, 2005’, and it is already operational in several other states, including MP, and Bihar and Haryana. In Maharashtra, it is only partially implemented. Lok Adhikar prefers to call it the Right to Services Act. Challenging the smoking disclaimer on-screen Bombay High Court denies interim relief to Anurag Kashyap’s petition challenging the mandatory anti-smoking disclaimer for the smoking scenes in his forthcoming film By Philip Varghese
I
t’s been two months since filmmaker Anurag Kashyap petitioned the Bombay High Court challenging the rules of the Cigarettes and Tobacco Products Act when screening his soon-to-be-released film Ugly. But the court, on Wednesday, declined to grant him any interim relief on his petition. Kashyap had petitioned the court challenging the notification that makes an antismoking disclaimer mandatory, in accordance with the Cigarettes and Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production Supply and Distribution) Act, during smoking scenes in a movie. He contended
that the ‘no smoking’ warning is a violation of his creative expression. According to the petition, Kashyap stated that there are several scenes that depict the use of tobacco products as part of the film’s sinister theme. “The projection is a part of the director’s vision and a cinematic genre which is rarely explored in Bollywood,” it said. In its earlier hearing in February this year, the division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice M.S. Sanklecha had issued notices to respondents including the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and directed them to file their replies. On September 19, 2013, Kashyap submitted his film to the CBFC for certification, ac-
companied with a letter in which he said that he did not wish to have the anti-smoking message displayed during the film. However, the CBFC, in a letter dated September 20, 2013, had told him that on noncompliance of the rules, the film would not be granted a censor certificate. “The film’s release has therefore been prevented. The film was originally scheduled to hit cinema halls in January. A mere depiction or display of a character or a situation using cigarette or tobacco product does not attract the attention of the audience specifically to the cigarette or tobacco product, nor is it intended to promote the sale of those products and hence, does not amount to advertisement,” the petition stated. Under rule 4(7) and 8 of the Cigarette and
Other Tobacco Products Act, the Union government had written a letter to the Censor Board asking them to make it mandatory for film makers to show the disclaimer during smoking scenes. Kashyap in his petition sought for the rule to be set aside and quashed as illegal, arbitrary and unconstitutional. After hearing both sides, the division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice M.S. Sanklecha on Wednesday said no case for interim relief is made out. “However, we allow the director to make a representation before the Union government seeking modification in the rules. If such a representation is made, then the Union government shall take a decision on it expeditiously,” the court observed. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

We are glad to report that the girl's courage did not go in vain, neither was the policeman as bad as he acted. The journalist went to the Colaba police station the next day and talked to the senior inspector about it. And she was so happy that the officer gave her a patient hearing. More than that, he got the police constable concerned to talk to her, when she was told that the matter had been sorted out, the girl did not want to file a complaint, that it was purely domestic in nature. And she was able to tell him that if only he had been more forthcoming, things would not have escalated. So that is one mollified constable, one satisfied complainant, and one rather triumphant young woman who had taught her husband that nowadays, when there are calls for help, someone usually listens!
And one more Modi joke (before he becomes PM)
On May 29, 2012, Narendra Modi launched the astrological book, '2012: End of the World,' written by astrologer Bejan Daruwalla at Kanodia Art Centre in front of a thousand people. Bejan predicted a grand victory for Narendra. The surprise packet was that six months before that date, the two met to see the latter's horoscope and hand and victory was predicted. Here is a picture of the event.
‘Modi’s astrologer’ in Mumbai
CURRENTLY, our Bejan is ensconced very comfortably indeed at the NSCI, in Worli, scattering predictions in the grand manner right and left, most of them about our possible future PM. He is here to write his annual horoscope book for 2015, courtesy his publisher, Ranvir Books. Please note this very carefully, he commanded us, the publisher is Ranvir Books, the printer is Harper Collins. We are not quite sure whether he is going to write the entire 500 page tome in ten days, because that is the size of his 2014 offering. At 83, he says, he is going great guns, though he moves around very little actually. The great gun refers to the way his astrological career has just taken off (in his 60's) and continues to soar at a dizzying rate. Modiji is just the icing on the cake, the cherry on the ice cream cone, the jewel in the crown. His secret? Love, life, luck, laughter. Ganesha blesses him, Allah loves him, the hand of the Christ is on his head, the holy fire smiles at him. Bejan says, "I am nothing, the Great Energies are everything."
Service is the key
THIS is the story we got from a young journalism graduate in Colaba and it should gladden the heart of the whole profession. In her own words: “At around 12:30 a.m. I heard a girl shouting and threatening to call the police. I looked out of my window to see where the sound was coming from. It was on the road below my house. I kept looking out to see what was happening and then in a turn of events, some men who the girl was threatening, pulled her hair, beat her brutally and started pushing
her around. One man took her into a dark lane. By now they were out of sight. “I called the police immediately. I also told my flatmates about it, one of who witnessed the event along with me from our house window. They rushed down to see what was happening and came back 5-10 minutes later and said the place where the girl was dragged into was a chawl and it could be their private matter. “The police arrived (one officer on a bike)15-20 mins later (after my flatmates inquired and returned). He went till the lane, looked around a little, took a u-turn and was on his way back. When I saw this I went down, called him back and asked him to look into the matter properly. He said that he went till the lane and it was quiet and that I could check myself if I didn't believe him. “I waited alone on the road at 1 a.m. for the policeman to come back and give me an answer as to what had happened and if the girl was ok. By now my friend, and some boys from my colony joined me. They told me to go up to my house. I insisted that I would wait till the policeman came back. So they went to the chawl themselves and came back sometime later and told me that the policeman was just sitting on his motorcycle inside doing nothing. “I still waited for him to come out. He did five minutes later. I asked him again if he found out anything about the girl. By now he became aggressive and threatened to take me to the police station and he wanted to file a complaint against me because I was pushing him to do his job and threatened him that I would take action against him if he continued to be
so casual about it. By now the entire purpose of the policeman coming was lost because the tables were turned against me. The policeman started shouting at me
and wanted me to come to the police station. My friends insisted that I should leave. I did. There was still no news of the girl, for which I called the police in the first place.”
WHEN you officially convert Rs.3 lakh to Rs.3,000 crore, you are called Robert Vadra. When you officially convert Rs.3,000 crore to Rs.3 lakh you are called Vijay Mallya. The actual difference lies between hanging around the right women and chasing the wrong ones. Follow the right women, you become Robert Vadra. Follow wrong women, you become Vijay Mallya. But if you don't follow any women, you become Narendra Modi.
The Sunny side to a dark book
WE are writing about actor Sunny Leone because we were sent this rather fetching picture of the girl actually reading, or seeming to, a book. Of course the subject would provide one with a lot of coloured laughs otherwise known as sniggers, but Ms Leone herself, has rather endeared herself to us because of the sheer gumption she has chosen in coming to India, with a flourishing career in adult film behind her, then actually doing her best to make it in Bollywood films. Frankly, we have more respect for her than for the likes of brats like Sonam Kapoor (and Sonakshi Sinha and Alia Bhatt) who seem to think that the world exists purely as a backdrop for their high-octane brand of vapidity. And stupidity. Or maybe it is because we have caught glimpses of all three on 'Koffee with Karan,' the one programme bound to bring out the stupid in you. On this programme, Sonam Kapoor said it was Robert de Niro who gave us “An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind.” The other two were so astoundingly foolish that we forget what they said. Frankly, in comparison, Sunny Leone reading She Devil, about infamous serial murderesses, including Aileen Wuornos, Myra Hindley, Rosemary West and Beverley Alitt, seems positively
What do Bollywood starlets do in their spare time? Well, if they are as busy as Sunny Leone, it could be that they grab every minute to read books about strange, strong women with a very dark side to themselves.
Einsteinian, if there is such a ourselves. Though there is no word. Printed and published by hope of looking like Sunny Leone Magna, it is one we intend to read as we do so.

T
he Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), has said it had not received directions from the Supreme Court (SC) to intervene in the Campa Cola compound issue as the Supreme Court has dismissed residents' extension plea, for vacating their illegal flats, beyond May 31. Corporators from all parties are supporting the Campa Cola residents. The issue was raised by Samajwadi Party leader Rais Shaikh yesterday in the Standing Committee meeting criticising the civic administration for failing to resolve the matter to which BMC Ad-

enior Shiv Sena MLC Dr Neelam Gorhe yesterday demanded that the state government order a high level CID probe into rising incidents of atrocities against Dalit community in various parts of the state. Speaking to newspersons here at Shivalaya party office, she slammed the state government for its failure to monitor the functioning of the antiatrocities committees in the state. Commenting upon the police annual crime report, she raised questions over the claims of decline in atrocities against Dalits arguing that maybe the atrocity cases against Dalits were not being registered because the police were instructed not to regis-

In a related development the recent incidents of atrocities against Dalits found echo in the meeting of the state cabinet with Congress minister for Water Conservation, Dr Nitin Raut slamming the NCP held Home department for failing to check the rising anti-Dalit attacks. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan assured an agitated Raut that meeting of a high power committee will be held soon to review the situation. Raut
yesterday had even penned an open letter addressed to the chief minister venting his clear displeasure at the rising cases of atrocities on dalits in the state. Meanwhile, senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde yesterday offered Rs.5 lakh aid to the family of Dalit youth Nitin Age who was killed in a honour killing case at Kharde village in Ahmednagar district. The Sena leader stated that the High Court had pointed to several flaws in the state government's 'Manodhairya' scheme for affected women. Gorhe charged the ruling Congress-NCP government of creating a fear psychosis amongst the minority community against the BJP-Sena led Mahayuti leaders. Refuting the NCP charge that more cases of atrocities were being registered in constituencies held by BJP-Sena legislators, she counter argued that majority of such cases were coming to light in Congress dominated Ahmednagar district.

Officials said that the tree was uprooted due to heavy storm. After one and a half hour of the incident, services were restored. Indian Meteorological De-
partment (IMD) officials said, “This is local thunder activity. High humidity and temperatures caused cloud formation in the region. Rainfall occurred at isolated places in the state”. The low pressure area has now shifted from Tamil Nadu to South Kerala. Colaba recorded a maximum temperature of 33.7 degree celsius and minimum of 28 degree celsius. n what can be termed as a sheer act of spreading terror among the complainant and her family members, the kins of an accused, who was arrested in a rape case, brutally assaulted the complainant. The 28-year-old complainant, who is also the victim of rape (the name of the complainant of rape has been withheld to protect her identity), was assaulted as she had refused to take back the rape case, which she had lodged against Vinod Waghri, whose relatives assaulted her on Wednesday.
The incident took place on early Wednesday morning, in which Sachin Waghri and Anita Waghri, assaulted the victim with hand blows and blade. In this regard, the city police arrested two people and booked them under relevant sections of the IPC. According to the police, the arrested accused, identified as Poonam Waghri (30) and Somnath Waghri (57), were involved in brutally assaulting the complainant inside her house at Ghatkopar (E). However, the main accused, identified as Sachin and Anita are absconding. In 2013, the complainant had
lodged a case of rape against Vinod, son of now arrested accused Somnath and husband of Poonam, said police. “Vinod is presently in judicial custody”, said Suresh Nirmal, senior inspector of Pant Nagar police station. The complainant was attacked in front of her children aged 10 and 12 respectively, said police adding that the victim was rushed to Rajawadi hospital in Ghatkopar by her neighbours. The victim received serious injuries caused by blades but she is out of danger, added police. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

Rajesh Chaudhary, serving a life term in Nashik jail for a 2006 murder and Raees Ansari, a Govandi resident, with at least 20 offences registered against him. However, the duo are repeated offenders and are involved in power thefts. The police swung in to action after Ansari was shot at by bikeborne shooters in on April 5. He escaped with a bullet in his thigh, but soon avenged and assaulted Chaudhary’s men. “We have evidence that Chaudhary is operating from jail. We have traced calls made by him,” said Senior PI Radhesham Agarwal of Shivaji Nagar police station. “We have booked both the accused to prevent further crime. Chaudhary will be brought to Mumbai from Nashik jail for further investigation. Meanwhile the shooters who executed the shootout are yet to be arrested. He hired two shooters from inside the jail. umbai Crime Branch Unit 11 has identified and put 16 police officials, who were on duty on the night of the custodial death, under the scanner. This includes the Police Inspector (PI), Police Sub Inspector (PSI), detection staff and constables. According to crime branch sources, the officials were summoned on Tuesday and the recording of their statements went on till Wednesday. Their statements are being recorded under section 199. The family of the victim had filed a petition with the Bombay High Court alleging that their son was beaten to death in police custody. On Wednesday, the court ordered the crime branch to submit its report in two weeks. The crime branch has been directed to establish the role of the duty officers and other staff when the incident took place. “We have begun recording statements. We are waiting for the medical report and the forensics report to determine the cause of death,” crime branch sources said. The victim, Akshay Kharade, was arrested by the Crime Branch Unit 12 about four days back before his death, for stabbing a man to death in Kandivli (East). He was handed over to the Samta Nagar police later. Kharade was to be remanded in police custody till Wednesday. about 40 per cent more than it was last year. Some parts of the city are facing water shortage because of the ongoing road laying and construction activities in the city. Soon, he says, that problem will also be resolved. He added, “Last year, there was 2,69,123 MLD of water stored in the dams, whereas this year, 3,65,771 MLD of water is stored, which is almost 40 per cent more. The Meteorological Department defines average or normal rainfall as between 96 per cent and 104 per cent of a 50year average of 89 cm for the season. entries of borrowers of exchange’s membership and he also approved various contracts. Further, police said that the scheme of exchange was nothing but a platform for running a non-banking financial company. Shah had linked the volumes of transaction to NSEL platform to get percentage of income for FTIL. This was, in fact, a way leading to wrongful gain, said Sinha, adding that this led to the FTIL substantially gaining brand value in the market which had led to the launching of other exchanges by FTIL. With regard to Javalgekar’s role, the officials said he was in control of Indian Bullion Markets Association (IBMA) and NSEL. Police said that IBMA had a large chunk of bogus clients whose addresses could not be traced, which led to the inflow of suspicious black money in the exchange’s circuit. Last year, the EOW had registered a case against the board of directors of
of Tata Realty Sanjay Ubale, Nitai Mehta of Praja, Gerson da Cunha of AGNI, PR professional Roger Pereira and former top cop Julio Ribeiro, the discussion centered on the revolutionary changes that the Right to Information (RTI) Act has effected and suggested that it be used along with the Right to Services (RTS) Act for greater effect. “We believe that what we call the Right to Services movement could have an impact as far-reaching and significant. It will be the next big step in citizen empowerment, in the claiming of our legitimate right to good and timely public services”, da Cunha said. The Act covers two broad areas: Transfers of Public Officials and Delivery of Services within prescribed time limits. While the first section has been used by civil servants to question arbitrary transfers, the second part, regarding delivery of services, has remained largely unknown and unused. Lok Adhikar’s mission is to promote widespread awareness of the Act and empower citizens to claim rightful ac-
cess to quality public services from government departments within the officially stipulated period of time. A key aspect of this Act is that a government department must have a Citizen’s Charter detailing the nature of services it offers citizens and the time frame within which those services are to be provided. The Act also stipulates that the Citizen’s Charter be displayed prominently in the department and be available on its website as well. This requirement, however, has been poorly fulfilled. Yesterday, it was decided to collect a large number of signatures for a memorandum to be presented to the chief minister of Maharashtra as soon as possible, urging him to act on the following suggestions. He should get all government agencies to publish their draft citizen’s charters within three months. A list of government agencies and institutions to which this does not apply must also be published. The chief minister must undertake an administrative audit that will present the current status of the imple-
mentation of various provisions under the RTS and the same should be published by October 2014. There should be an official website where the citizen’s charters of all government agencies can be hosted. Following the publication of the draft citizen’s charters, government agencies should hold public consultations to finalise them and organise state level symposiums to create awareness about the act among citizens of the state. Other demands include reframing of rules under the Act in 2013 to make them more user-friendly so that they can come into effect by October 2014. On its part, Lok Adhikar will work with a two-pronged strategy to make full use of this Act. On the one hand, it will interface with government departments to ensure that Citizen’s Charters are drawn up, displayed and implemented. On the other, it will work with citizens and the media to create a groundswell of awareness about the Act. All through, it will work collaboratively with the government in helping citizens claim their right.

NSEL including Shah and 25 borrowing companies for criminal breach of trust, forgery and conspiracy. In this regard, the EOW has already frozen 80 accounts related to the accused in the case. Apart from the various sections of the Indian Penal code, the EOW has also invoked Maharashtra Protection of Investors Deposit (MPID) Act, and process of attaching properties is underway, said Sinha. Significantly, more than a dozen big brokers are on the radar of the EOW, who are suspected to be major players in the scam. Before probing the role of brokers being probed, the EOW probed the roles of the directors and management officials of the NSEL. It was just this year that the sleuths from the EOW started probing the role of brokers in the scam. Hitherto, the EOW is able to secure Rs.5,100 crore out of the Rs.5,600 crore fraud through attaching the properties and assets of the accused in the scam. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

Poll irregularities in Seemandhra A
LARGE number of cases of booth capturing, rigging and violence appears to be happening in several places in Secunderabad when elections took place yesterday. The Election Commission (EC) seems to have not anticipated irregular cases of voting. Television clips show adequate security arrangements were absent. Outside a booth, only a couple of policemen were seen. A photographer who took pictures of voting was thrashed by those who were inside a room where voting was going on. Ink mark was put on the fingers of voters and they were asked to go out. It looks like those who are supervising voting have been bribed. The policemen also seem to have received hush money. It is clear they are not allowing fair play. In villages and small towns of Seemandhra, it is being said cash payments are being made both by YSR Congress and the Telugu Desam Party. In all elections in Andhra, money has always played a big part. The richer a party is, the better the chance it has to win elections. There should have been greater poll bandobast in Seemandhra. Jagan Reddy has in possession huge funds which he is using to win. He has been in jail for several months over a charge of financial irregularities. He is basking in the reflected glory of his father who was one of the most popular chief ministers of Andhra. He exploited the sympathy factor after the death of his father in a plane accident. It is said in Seemandhra that he is going all out to capture power in the state. When he was in jail, his mother and sister carried on the political war. This election will show whether he is as popular as he is made out to be. From what one sees in the electronic media it becomes clear that the Election Commissioner should order repoll in several centres in Seemandhra.
B
Y the end of next week we will know who is going to be India’s next prime minister so this is a good week to examine what this endless campaign offered voters by way of choice. This is a particularly important exercise because for the first time in any general election Indian voters were given a choice between two diametrically opposed economic ideas. In elections past the choice has been between divergent political ideas but on the economy our two main political parties have been in agreement that India must remain socialist forever even if socialism has failed to provide Indians with their most basic needs. If the Congress Party defined its socialism as Nehruvian the Bharatiya Janata Party defined theirs as Gandhian and this was the only difference. In the six years that India was ruled by a BJP prime minister it became abundantly clear that Atal Behari Vajpayee was no opponent of Nehruvian socialism. He tinkered with privatisation and built some highways but made no effort to reduce the powers of the state to interfere in economic activity and no effort at all to improve governance.

complete sense to the new urban middle class voter whose voice has been heard loud and clear for the first time in a general election. Halfway through the campaign the Congress Party woke up to what was happening and Rahul Gandhi began to raise economic issues instead of banging on about secularism and communalism. Sadly, all that he offered voters was more of the ‘rights based development’ that has been the leitmotif of his mother’s government in the past decade. Indians have been given the legal right to education, employment, information and cheap food grain but when translated into action these rights become meaningless. What is the point of having a right to education if
Charisma card played to the hilt
Aam aadmi of today has changed So this time the Congress Party seemed to be taken by complete surprise when Narendra Modi made development and governance the two main pillars of his campaign. Modi’s campaign message was ‘minimum government, maximum governance’ and he managed to make the average voter understand exactly what this meant. So wherever I traveled during the campaign I met voters, rich and poor, who said they supported him because they wanted ‘vikas’ and ‘parivartan’: development and change. When questioned about exactly what they meant by these two words they explained that they were tired of hopeless public services and hopeless prospects to improve their lives. Unemployment has been the biggest election issue wherever I have gone and nobody seems to have understood this better than Modi. In an interview to the ‘Times of India’ last week he said, “The first priority of the government will be to restore the health of the economy and put it back on track. This is not only important for reviving growth, but also important for generating employment. If there is one single thing that I feel needs maximum attention, it is generating employment for our youth.” In his campaign speeches he has explained this in ways that have made
ON THE SPOT Tavleen Singh there are not enough schools? What is the point of MNREGA if rural Indians are guaranteed only 100 days of employment out of 365? What is the point of a legal right to cheap food grain when the public distribution system is broken? When the Modi onslaught began what made Rahul Gandhi’s task harder was his seeming inability to understand how much the average Indian voter had changed. He appears not to have noticed yet that the ‘aam aadmi’ he pitches his speeches at has almost vanished. The ‘aam aadmi’ today wears jeans and t-shirts and nearly always has a cell phone. The ‘aam aadmi’ today has access to TV and when he sees how Indians live in Delhi and Mumbai it makes him angry that he has been denied a better standard of living and been given ‘rights’ instead. The ‘aam aadmi’ no longer wants handouts from the government he wants a real job and a house and if possible even a car. Rahul in the latter half of the campaign changed his pitch to include promises of free medicines and homes

ONSTANTINE the Great and Pope Sylvester were constantly aiding one another to strive for nothing but outward glory. Divines and ecclesiastical dignitaries began to concern themselves only about subduing the whole world to their authority, incited men against one another to murder and plunder, and in creed and life reduced Christianity to a nullity. Helchitsky denies completely the right to make war and to inflict the punishment of death; every soldier, even the 'knight,' is only a violent evil doer — a murderer." The same account is given by the German book, with the addition of a few biographical details and some extracts from Helchitsky's writings. Having learnt the drift of Helchitsky's teaching in this way, I awaited all the more impatiently the appearance of The Net of Faith in the journal of the Academy. But one year passed, then two and three, and still the book did not appear. It was only in 1888 that I learned that the printing of the book, which had been begun, was stopped. I obtained the proofs of what had been printed and read them through. It is a marvelous book from every point of view.
with running water and electricity but by then people had started to ask why these things had not been made available in ten years of Congress rule. Modi capitalised on Rahul’s dodgy comprehension of economic ideas by mocking him for needing to spend nights in rural homes to do some poverty tourism. ‘The prince needs to see what poverty looks like…I don’t because I grew up in poverty.’ And, while Rahul continued to list the rights and freebies that a Congress government would give people if re-elected Modi offered nothing by way of handouts choosing to speak instead of how India could become one of the richest countries in the world if everyone worked together to make this happen. He did not condemn Nehruvian socialism in so many words but talked of the aarthic azaadi (economic freedom) that came after the economic reforms began.
Its general tenor is given with perfect accuracy by Pypin. Helchitsky's fundamental idea is that Christianity, by allying itself with temporal power in the days of Constantine, and by continuing to develop in such conditions, has become completely distorted, and has ceased to be Christian altogether. Helchitsky gave the title The Net of Faith to his book, taking as his motto the verse of the Gospel
MATTER & SPIRIT about the calling of the disciples to be fishers of men; and, developing this metaphor, he says: "Christ, by means of his disciples, would have caught all the world in his net of faith, but the greater fishes broke the net and escaped out of it, and all the rest have slipped through the holes made by the greater fishes, so that the net has remained quite empty. The greater fishes who broke the net are the rulers, emperors, popes, kings, who have not renounced power, and instead of true Christianity have put on what is simply a mask of it." Helchitsky teaches precisely what has been and is taught in these days by the non-resis-
In the last days of the campaign the Congress Party has been forced to rely almost entirely on the vaunted charisma of the Dynasty. So Priyanka has made herself more available to TV reporters than usual and has gone out of her way to attack Modi directly for such things as ‘snooping’ and for using language that did not befit a man who wants to be prime minister. The ‘charisma’ card has been played to the hilt with even Sonia Gandhi coming forward to make a televised appeal to the nation for the first time in the ten years she has been India’s de facto prime minister. In this appeal she warned that India would lose her bharatiyata if Modi became prime minister because her plurality would be destroyed. In saying this she echoed sentiments that have been expressed throughout the campaign by liberals and leftist intellectuals in the salons of Delhi and Mumbai ever since Modi’s long shadow first appeared. In these salons they use secularism as their reason to fear Modi as prime minister but what they seem to be more scared of is that Modi’s popularity signals the monopoly on ruling India that people like them have had since 1947. They fear that with the chaiwallah from Gujarat will come a new kind of elite that will change the way India has been governed and that they who represent the old order will become increasingly irrelevant. Their fears are not entirely groundless but perhaps the change they fear is the change that India really needs. tant Mennonites and Quakers, and in former tunes by the Bogomilites, Paulicians, and many others. He teaches that Christianity, expecting from its adherents gentleness, meekness, peaceableness, forgiveness of injuries, turning the other cheek when one is struck, and love for enemies, is inconsistent with the use of force, which is an indispensable condition of authority. The Christian, according to Helchitsky's reasoning, not only cannot be a ruler or a soldier; he cannot take any part in government nor in trade, or even be a landowner; he can only be an artisan or a husbandman. This book is one of the few works attacking official Christianity which has escaped being burned. All such so-called heretical works were burned at the stake, together with their authors, so that there are few ancient works exposing the errors of official Christianity. The book has a special interest for this reason alone. But apart from its interest from every point of view, it is one of the most remarkable products of thought for its depth of aim, for the astounding strength and beauty of the national language in which it is written, and for its antiquity. And yet for more than four centuries it has remained unprinted, and is still unknown, except to a few learned specialists. — Loe Tolstoy

Where was Priyanka all these years? PRIYANKA VADRA, daughter of Sonia Gandhi, is becoming unnecessarily emotional in the current election campaign. She has threatened Modi that “each polling booth in Amethi will take revenge.” She asserts that Modi has "insulted my martyred father in Amethi, the people of Amethi will never forgive him." Priyanka should refrain from dragging her father, Rajiv Gandhi, who lost the elections miserably in 1989 due to the Bofors scandal, into the current campaign. She should have stepped up to explain the telecom scandal, the coal scandal, the Asian games scandal in Delhi. She was silent all along. Now, when she finds her brother Rahul pilloried at campaigning, she is picking up the gauntlet. Let Priyanka explain all the Congress scandals and incompetencies e.g. inflation, unemployment, declining FDIs, etc. and her deafening silence all these years. A little knowledge is always very myopic and dangerous. Priyanka will realise this, when the election booths across the country take revenge against a government steeped in corruption and indifferent to the poor.
DEVELOPMENT TALKS: Rahul Gandhi was recently reported as saying that Rae Bareli and Amethi will see development only if a Nehru-Gandhi family member is elected to these constituencies.
Where’s the development? AT an election meeting, the Congress’ Crown Prince is reported to have said that the two constituencies of Rae Bareli and Amethi would see development only if represented in the Lok Sabha by a person from the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty. If that is true then why these two areas have still remained utterly backward despite having sent a MP from the ruling family every time for more than six decades; except during the period from 1977 to 1980. Those three years saw these constituencies returning to Raj Narain and Ravindra Pratap Singh, who had defeated Indira Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi, respectively.
Priyanka, Indians want results, jobs, infrastructure, control on inflation, clean administration. It does not matter whose brother, sister, wife, girl friend or son you are. Only delivery and integrity count. Welcome to a new India. — Rajendra K. Aneja, Wadala

Post-poll scenario
THE post-poll scenario after the last phase of the Lok Sabha elections may throw up an unexpected picture if the following happens: Impressive tally by TMC and AIADMK, coupled with the comrades bagging around 20 seats, as also the SP, BSP and RJD maintaining their respective fiefdoms, one can see a third successive term for the Congress. With Rahul Gandhi as the PM commanding a three digit force, the party can get the backing of all ‘secular’ parties taking their combined — Arun Malankar, Santacruz strength past the 272 mark. Forgetting the bitter acrimony of nuclear deal fiasco, the Ganashakti mandarins can be brought around as exTHE foot-overbridge on the Charni ternal supporters thereby repeating Road station (East) at the southern the 2004 story. The JD (U) and the end is always crowded and the way BJD would provide extra muscle it is built does not look safe espe- power to the ‘secular’ brigade.

THIS is with reference to a recent newspaper report. Priyanka Gandhi was right when she said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, is playing neech rajniti (low level politics) when the latter accused the martyr former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi while addressing a rally in Amethi. I strongly feel that right from the first day of the election campaign at various venues Narendra Modi is talking rubbish language to attack Gandhi family and the Congress Party without any agenda of that what he is going to do for the people and the country and his only aim is to divide the country on the basis of caste and religion to bring disaster to the country for his own selfish personal interests of bringing up his hidden agenda of construction of Ram Mandir and Hindutva to bring communal politics at every step. The urgent need of the hour is that his low caste politics should be condemned by all the people of the country who must teach him a very strong lesson in the near future.
The common ‘principle’ binding these disparate elements together is their strong desire to keep the ‘communal’ forces out. — Jorhat Singh, Kandivli
Only sporting legends, please! INDIAN cricket has gone to the dogs as tainted people occupy key Board positions of affiliate state associations as well as the BCCI. Lalit Modi wanted by the courts and the law of our land had fled the country and surprisingly has been elected as the president of Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA), only recently. RCA in turn finds itself suspended by BCCI which had a tainted president, N.Srinivasan. Politics in sports is ruining most sporting disciplines with cricket being no exception. Only former sporting legends who have played for the country, excelled at international events and brought laurels to the country should head sporting bodies or be members of the various sporting governing bodies. Records of sportsmen and not votes should decide the criterion to head a sports body. Some seats should also be reserved in Parliament for sports, in Rajya Sabha and the sports minister too should be a former sportsman. Most sports associations need a clean-up act and the courts should ban politicians who do not understand the game from being a part of sports administration in India. — S.N. Kabra, Goregaon

Glorious morning!
Taking feminism too far THIS refers to a film critic by Deepa Gahlot 'Gangsta Queen', (ADC, April 26) in which she says that Kangana Ranaut "does bring flashes of fire to her part but when the director is not quite clear what he wants, it is difficult for the actress to get the right key." I beg to differ from this assessment for a simple reason that this actress is known to tell the director what she wants and it is not the other way round. One remembers that she changed the name of one of her films from Manu weds Tanu to Tanu weds Manu to make her the central character. Her earlier film Queen won appreciation but she more than sqauandered it by taking up Revolver Rani role in her attempt to be the flag-bearer of all the women in Bollywood, quite unnecessarily. She had tried her hand at being an Indiana Jones and the Fearless Nadia of yesteryear. If she continues to dabble in such 'macho' roles THE 'QUEEN': Kangana Ranaut has without realising her limitations, lately been seen in many feminist kind of movies including 'Queen' and 'Revolver she will only ruin her career. — Dr. V. Mothers Know Best Mother’s Day is just around the corner and while we are sure that your mothers would love a card and a bouquet, the Woman’s World Team decided to ask a few mothers in the city what they really want this Mother’s Day. Read on to find out what is actually on their mind “My daughter always gifts me something nice on Mother’s Day. But, recently, I have realised that it brings me great joy to be able to go on trips with her. So, I am hoping to take a short vacation with my daughter to celebrate being a mother this year. I just want to relax with my daughter and sit and chat with her, away from the city. I think that the perfect way to celebrate being a mother, is to get to know your child a little better.”
“I would really like to pamper myself at a spa this Mother’s Day. Being a retired mom, I also want to do some social work during the day to help the less fortunate in our city. Having a five-course meal prepared by my sons for dinner would be an added bonus!"
— Rashmi Shinde
— Celestine Bharde
“On my second Mother’s Day, I would like my 21-month-old son to stop trying to swab the floor with fresh clothes on and stop inserting my car keys into electrical sockets! I really hope I get my gift!”
— Sneha Singh
All these years I have celebrated Mother’s Day with my mother, but now, as I step into motherhood myself, it’s a different feeling altogether. This will be my first Mother’s Day and all I really want is for my son to get the happiness he deserves. I will expect gifts from him when he is older, but this year, I will be more than happy just to see him smile.

“Mothers aren’t materialistic. All they want is to feel appreciated and that is what Mother’s Day is all about. It is about stepping back, recognising and saying “We really appreciate and love you and want to do something that you will really enjoy.” I would love an off-duty day, where my two daughters do all the work and I get to enjoy the day sleeping and pampering myself. My days are usually so hectic that I don’t even get enough sleep, let alone any extra time for myself!”
— Meena Khurana
“This Mother’s Day, instead of being by myself, I would really like to go away to the Maldives with my two-year-old in tow. I’d love to switch off from the world and enjoy the good times with my child.”
— Anushree Reddy
“My two boys often break into cartwheels, sometimes mid-sentence! I begged them to teach me and the one time they tried to, they ‘tsked’ at my feeble attempts and said, “Ask Dad to teach you.” So, this Mother’s Day, I want them to patiently teach me how to do cartwheels!”
— Sandhya Gorthi
“All mothers secretly wish for a day off! A day-long break from my household chores and responsibilities would be perfect. The ideal gift for me would be a getaway of sorts. An entire day devoted to a recreational trip, where all I do is relax, maybe enjoy a spa treatment, and come home to relish a delicious meal prepared by my two lovely daughters would be perfect!”
“Being a stay-at-home mother, I find myself alone at home for the most part of my day. My children work and my husband is a busy man. This year, the one thing I really want for Mother’s Day is some quality time with my family. Maybe a nice family dinner, particularly one that doesn’t involve everyone watching television!”
— Philomena Flanagan
I am a mother of three and I have been playing this role for years. My son has moved abroad and my daughter recently got married. I hope that I can celebrate this Mother’s Day with all my children. But, then again, seeing them often is an everyday wish, irrespective of whether it’s Mother’s Day or not.
— Seema Singh Verma
— Rita Sharma “What I really want for Mother’s Day this year is two fold. Some me-time for me and then some me-time to do things for my daughter. I’d like to make a trip to the salon without feeling like that time should belong to my daughter (I love her to bits but I kill myself over keeping her entertained). But, I’d also like some time for a few art and craft projects that I’ve been meaning to do for my daughter’s room. I think the ideal day would be one where her father and she went for a day trip, while I stayed at home doing all this.”
— Shahnaz K. Jain
"Mother’s Day is a time for relaxation and rejuvenation. A spa treatment gifted to me by my kids or even a delicious breakfast in bed would be lovely.”
— Rakhee Vaswani
“This Mother’s Day, I want my children to make a personalised drawing for me — I would treasure it all my life!”

Cosmetology, science, business, fitness, marketing, public relations... these are all fields that Canada-based Amrit Dhaliwal is associated with. She was recently in Mumbai to take part in the Body Power Expo that was held last month. Dev Goswami talks to her about her varied interests, the concept of pro-fitness modelling and her recently released book >> Amrit Dhaliwal, a pro-fitness model, talks to us about her personal, professional life and her book Glamfit Secrets Revealed
several hats and variety is not only the spice of life, but also forms the lessons in my life. I love interacting with people. All of my previous experiences have brought me to this pivotal point and I have packaged all that knowledge into GLAMFIT. Pro-fitness modelling in not well-known in India. If you were to explain to our readers, in simple terms what it means, what would you say? Fitness modelling is what the name suggests; showcasing a healthy, fit, athletic physique with an aesthetic balance of body proportions — an ideal of broad shoulders, narrow waist, sculpted glutes and legs. Weights are the tools that help to create beautiful curves for the female form. Potential jobs in this field can be for fitness apparel, supplements, fitness equipment, sports, nutrition and wellness lifestyle. Pro-fitness modelling is going to catch up pretty fast — Indian women have incredibly natural features, body types and skin tone. You took part in the Body Power Expo that was held in Mumbai. Tell us about your association with the expo and your overall experience. I was at BodyPower Expo India on a number of different platforms. I am the brand ambassador for Venky’s Nutrition and we were the main sponsors of the event. I had a chance to introduce my brand and sign copies of my book. I was also a guest judge for BodyPower FIT FACTOR, a modelling component in search of one male and one female fitness model. The experience was incredible. The expo provided an educational forum for the best of the world to come down and share their success secrets, ignite motivation and showcase a fun, fit, healthy lifestyle. I highly encourage everyone to keep their calendars open for BodyPower India 2015.

It will sustain you in all your daily duties while kick-starting your natural metabolism.

commerce degree in marketing. My association with fitness came much later, when I was 27-years-old. Intuitively, I knew that knowledge about physical activity was missing from my life. One of my key goals was to learn more about health and fitness. On the other hand, modelling was something I had been doing on the side, so adding fitness modelling to my portfolio was a natural extension to my body of work. Today, I act more as a consultant to various companies, which gives me the freedom to invest more time into my brand, GLAMFIT.
From commerce and science to cosmetology, your education has been quite varied. Tell us about yourself. I started out with cosmetology, where I worked in the industry for a few years. What can we expect from your latest book on fitness? Glamfit Secrets Revealed – Fitness, Beauty, Nutrition Success is a compilation of 13 chapters. It’s an easy and conversational read. I cover fitness and nutritional tips, myths, motivation, full body workouts, detox programmes, supplement profile for beauty benefits, a complete grocery list, wedding preparations! You can download a copy from www.getglamfit.com You describe your approach to fitness fashion as something that works with a woman’s natural physique and not against it. Tell us more about that. There are four basic body types: pear, apple, hourglass and rectangle. Most women fall into two of these categories with one dominant body shape and traits of another. My approach is to enhance your god-given physique and sculpt it to get the best version of yourself. It could be to tighten and tone, balance body proportions or in some cases, transform your body much like a fitness competitor to whichever category fits you best. Remember that they are all categories of beauty and none are superior. Each body type is beautiful. Women love fashion, Hollywood loves fashion, ramp shows love fashion; all of which can easily tempt you to achieve your ideal body weight through unhealthy measures. I want to educate people through my fitness experiences, food choices and modelling portfolio that women can sculpt their bodies by using weights, eating right and maintaining a fashion forward look. What is Amrit Dhaliwal going to do next? My long-term goals are to develop a business brand for myself, in the style of a Cindy Crawford or an Oprah Winfrey. There have been many successful women that have swung the doors wide open in the realm of business and marketing. Fitness is a life long commitment. People can look and feel fabulous well into their old age. I believe that we are on a precipice that requires a major change in the way we live our lives, I would love to be one of the people that campaigns for better food, healthier bodies, and happier psyches.

Nailing it!
Whether you like your nails long or short, French or British, there are designs for each. Radhika R. talks to Karen Coelho, a nail artist from the Royal Treatment Nail Salon, and brings you the top nail art trends for the season
#2 Floral Nail art
#4 FreNCh with a twist
Nothing is more summery than colourful flowers and bright colours. These cute flowers are extremely simple to draw on your nails and look great too. Shiny flowers on a matte polish is a classic combination.
Who doesn’t love the classic French manicure? The groomed pink nails and white tips are the epitome of class. This versatile new trend will give you an edge — replace the white tip with a metallic stripe.
#1 Corrupted NeoN
#3 NautiCal art
This nail polish looks best when the lights are out. A UV glow nail kit is great for those who love to party. With clear-on application, this clever polish soaks up light during the day and continues to glow in the dark.
Celebrate summer by painting ocean motifs on your nails. Designs such as anchors, ships or even plain ocean shades will make your nails look unique and summer-ready in a jiffy.
#5 mix aNd matCh Nails
#7 VelVet maNiCure
Holi marks the beginning of the spring/ summer season in India and although the festival is far behind us, playing with colours doesn’t have to be. These mix and match nails do exactly that. Create a mesmerising pattern or colour block to rock the trend.
Just when you think you have read about all sorts of nail art, velvet nails swoop in to surprise you. The velvet dust, along with the coloured base coat is available in special nail kits, to make application easy to do yourself. However, make sure you apply this just before a night out, as it won’t last long!
#6 CaViar maNiCure The easiest and most stylish trend so far, a caviar manicure basically involves applying nail polish that is studded with tiny beads. It creates an excellent 3D effect and is great for special occasions.
#8 multi Coloured Nails
#10 ombré
Show off your love for colour by applying different shades on different nails. Apply bright colours or splash a mixture of random colours on each nail to create interesting designs.
Ombré is a great summer trend, especially if you can’t pick between different shades of a single colour. Create a gradient effect with your favourite summer colour.
#9 Fruit Nail art Summer and fruits go hand-in-hand, so get fruity by painting berries, melons and other summer fruits on your nails. We love this watermelon design that is great for summer.

emma stoNe
We love Emma’s sense of style and her outfit for the MET is stunning. We like that she stood out from the crowd in her hot pink ensemble. She’s having fun with her look and the best part is that she looks super comfortable in her outfit. Her hair and makeup is left simple so that the full focus is on her clothes.
lupita NyoNg’o
She takes a fashion risk in her green Prada outfit — but we aren’t convinced it’s paid off. The updated flapper dress just had a lot going on with the emeralds, beadwork, feathers and then the hairband. She’s usually so well turned out that we’ll forget this slip up.
This trend will add a fun pattern on your nails that will go from cuticle to tip. Apply a base coat of colour and then select a contrasting colour, applying it in stripes across your nails to form a criss-cross design. It’s easy to apply and looks great!
This is perhaps a little too vintage for our liking. Katie looks more like Belle from Beauty and the Beast than an A-lister attending MET. Her hair is all over the place and makes her look like she’s just rolled out of bed. Not one of our favourites.
The actress brought back old Hollywood glamour with her glittering Gucci gown. We love the fit and the gorgeous shoulder train. She also gets full marks for sticking to the vintage theme, right down to her bright red lips and immaculate hairstyle.

Considering the vulgar images we’ve been subjected to on her Twitter account, Rihanna manages to look sexy and classy at the MET. Although the vintage theme isn’t prominent here, Rihanna pulls off the cropped top and skirt combo with flair.

« nice or not? fit-flops as a style statement
available in the market
Fit-flops are flip-flops with a thicker sole, that claim to help your legs stay toned and healthy while you walk. But, is the new trend stylish enough for women in the city to wear? Radhika R. spoke to a few women and got mixed opinions
lakmé 9to5 mattiFyiNg super suNsCreeN No matter how much you understand the importance of a good sunscreen, it is virtually impossible to find a formula that really works for you. So, when I heard about Lakmé’s mattifying sunscreen, I genuinely wanted to give it a go. Lakmé promises it will control the oil on your face, mattify your skin and prep it for your makeup while giving you an SPF 50 protection. The good thing is that the product comes in a bottle with a pump, making it easy to use and easy to carry as well. The formula however, doesn’t mattify completely. It does give your skin a matte look for a while, but the effect lasts only an hour or so before wearing off completely. Also, the recommended two pumps are a tad too much and because the sunscreen is white and not clear in colour, it tends to leave a white-grey cast on your face which is quite unsightly. Having said that, it does prevent your make-up from sliding off your face, which is certainly a plus point. priCe `500 for 30ml star ratiNg *** where Available in retail stores across the city

i loVe them!
I love fit-flops! They are very comfortable and don’t look drab. They are perfect for when you want to carry a look from day to night — I wear them to work as well as to parties. The right amount of sequins can make them look more interesting. Another reason I am a fan of these sandals, is because I can wear them with western as well as with ethnic outfits without having to think twice. Also, with so many different colours available, I am working on building a collection of these. — Preeti Seshasayee
Fit-flops are the most comfortable pair of sandals I have ever come across. I have heard that they are great when it comes to taking care of your feet. They also claim to tone your calves, legs and thighs which is why I gave them a try. I have been a flip-flop lover for quite a while, but with these in the market, I have never gone back to flipflops. They look pretty on my feet and they also have a really good shelf life. I have over-used so many pairs, that the rubber has worn out and become uneven at some points. They get very uncomfortable once that happens and need to be discarded. — Ramanpreet Bains
they’re a No-No For me
I wouldn’t recommend fitflops. They might look good, but I don’t think they are good for my feet. We read everyday about the illeffects of wearing sandals that have tiny heels and I wouldn’t want to risk my health just for a little style. I also face foot problems and I am too scared to try them out as they might worsen them. - Ushma Jani

Turning mirrors inTo windows Shalini Sharma speaks with Lila Poonawalla, the chief managing director of Alfa Laval Tetra Pak India, who has worked actively for the cause of higher education for girls as well as for the Lila Poonawalla Foundation, that was formed to further this ambition >> Read on to find out about Lila Poonawalla’s journey as she made higher education for girls a reality with her foundation
C
oming from a family that had to flee Pakistan after the partition in 1947, education was something that did not come easily to Lila Poonawalla, the chief managing director of Alfa Laval Tetra Pak India. In 1996, she founded the Lila Poonawalla Foundation with the aim of helping young girls attain higher education. Lila believes that education is the solution to most of the problems that we face today, whether it is empowering women or fighting crimes against women. In this interview, she talks about the obstacles that she has had to face to attain education and the reasons that drove her to set up this foundation. Here are the excerpts:
Images: Shutterstock
What inspired you to start your foundation? We came to India as refugees. For my mother, getting funds for even basic education was an uphill task, let alone getting funds for higher education. I lost my father at the age of three, so my mother had a tough time bringing up five children. When I grew up, I wanted to be an engineer, which was quite expensive to study for. But, I worked hard, got some scholarships and help from friends and finished my engineering. At that time, I thought, if I could afford it, one day, I would start a foundation to support higher education for girls. What is the criteria and procedure for short-listing candidates and awarding them with scholarships? The criteria is merit and necessity based. Applications are invited and a software is used to enter data and compute points for each candidate based on her academic performance and family income. The data is then evaluated by the trustees and once the candidates are shortlisted, a final interview is conducted by a qualified panel and the candidates are selected. Your training programme for schoolgirls also involves a special session for their mothers. What is the idea behind including such sessions in this programme? Mothers play a critical role in
nourishing and developing their children. Also, since most parents do not discuss these issues with their children openly, it’s important that along with talking to the girls, we spread this awareness to their mothers and educate them about correct health practices. Our sessions are focused mainly on health related issues, nutrition and diet, sex education and self-defense. You were born in Pakistan and then moved to India after the partition. Could you share a few experiences about your stay at refugee camps? I was only 3-years-old when I came to India as a refugee. We arrived at the Lonavala refugee camp. One day, several people came towards us with burning torches in their hands to set our camp on fire. It was the 30th of January in 1948 and Mahatma Gandhi had been assassinated. Since we had come from Pakistan, this crowd thought we were Muslims and wanted to kill all of us. We all went out with our hands raised and pleaded with them, telling them that we were Hindus, before they finally left. We were so scared. You started working at a time when women were expected to stay within the four walls of their homes. How difficult was it to make a place for yourself in a man’s world? I never faced that challenge. The only difficulty I faced was trying to get my first job. No company wanted to employ a lady mechanical engineer. Then, a multinational organisation, Vulcan Laval (now Alfa Laval), offered me a job and I am sure they never regretted it. Women empowerment is an issue that has umpteen facets to it. Where do you think we should begin? The undisputed tool of empowerment is relevant education. The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows. We need to enable women to realise their potential by making them aware of the opportunities waiting for them in the world.

Stay away from me! Not being able to find the right man might not be the only reason that you’re single. Yamini Walia tells you if you’re coming off as unapproachable >> If you’re the type of girl who takes charge of every situation and always tells people how to do things, you might be too intimidating for most men

I love my girlfriend. She is warm, intelligent, funny and compassionate. The first time I saw her... ... like a cliche, I fell for her.
inTroverT If you are attractive, but an introvert, men may perceive you to be unapproachable because they think that you have an attitude problem, or that you think no one is good enough for you and that is why you don’t talk to anyone. So, make an effort to talk to more people.
Social behaviour Don’t go out in large groups. Separate yourself from your girlfriends once in a while. Guys want to talk to you, but not when you are surrounded by your friends all the time. Some conversations should take place solely between him and you and not between him and your girlfriends. Also, don’t reveal too much about your personal life in the first meeting. A guy isn’t interested in knowing about your bitchy boss or health problems in the first 10 minutes of knowing you.
I practically chased her down through friends and friends of friends. It was hard work, but at our first date, I knew she was the girl for me and I hoped I was the man she deserved.
body language Having the correct body language is extremely important if you want to come across as approachable. If you hunch your shoulders, cross your arms or don’t make any eye contact, then you will come across as unapproachable. If you are confident about yourself you will automatically become more attractive to the men around you. So, let go and relax. A smile always works wonders!
A few months into our relationship, I realised though seemingly confident...
appearance The way you dress up can also make you seem unapproachable. The idea is to look trendy, but don’t overdo it! Don’t look like you’re trying too hard, or like you’re dressing up to impress a certain group of people. Remember, he wants to date the real you, not someone you’re pretending to be, or even worse — a mannequin.
Y
ou are attractive and successful, but are probably the only single girl at the party. The cute guy at the next table always approaches your friend and men flirt with everyone in the room except for you. Don’t beat yourself up over it as it may be because they feel wary when it comes to approaching you. Wonder why you’re giving off a vibe that says “Don’t come near me!”? Read on to find out.

FlirTaTiouS
Being a strong woman is good, but understand that no one likes a bully, or someone who comes across as too defensive during the first meeting. Men get intimidated by loud and boisterous women. Your no-nonsense vibe won’t help you when someone is just trying to get to know you. Try being slightly mellow and see the difference it makes.
If being an introvert makes you unapproachable, so does being the complete opposite. A woman who flirts with every guy in the room will never be taken seriously. Flirting too much makes you seem desperate and you will be noticed but not in a good way. However, being a prude or talking badly about people who do flirt won't help you either.
« Dear grace, i have a problem... dear grace,
My boyfriend recently got a job with my company and as luck would have it, he’s working under me! I thought it would be easier to work with him since we knew each other so well, but I think he is taking advantage of dating the boss! I find him slacking and don’t know how to shout at him in the office without causing a rift in our relationship. When I tell him to do something, he weans it off onto someone else, undermining my
authority. I am worried this is going to cause drama at work, at home or both! Please help! — rashi chawla, ghatkopar dear rashi, Now you know why they say dating a co-worker is never a good idea! Since you started dating before he joined your company, you should already be comfortable enough with each other to discuss your problems outside work. Have you tried talking to him about this? Tell him what he’s
doing (he may not even have realised it!) and see if that helps the situation. Also, explain to him that at work, you’re not girlfriend and boyfriend but boss and employee. You will compromise your integrity as a boss if you don’t call him out on his mistakes. Hopefully, he will buck up but if he doesn’t, separate work and your personal life and deal with the consequences! Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in
She was insecure about her body and had a rather negative self-image. She wasn’t skinny, but she wasn’t a ‘baby elephant’, or ‘fat pig’, or ‘jabba baby’ as she jokingly (and often angrily) called herself. So, I encouraged her to join me to exercise and get fitter. The next morning he was coming over. I got my hair styled, dressed up a bit, bought cupcakes for our coffee break, had conversations with him in my head... Then he rang the bell and I got so nervous, I turned off the lights and pretended not to be at home!
She went on an extreme diet instead and has gone from curvy to a bag of bones in a few months. "And while I prefer her curvy, I love her for who she is and I am happy if she is happy. But, she doesn’t seem happy with her ‘brand new body’. She is tired all the time, obsesses about her diet, is grumpy and so different from the girl I fell for. Help please!” — Yuv a) Extreme diets can pose serious health risks. Insist on going to a professional dietician and if needed, a counsellor. b) Have a chat with her and find out why she is being so hard on herself. Tell her how fantastic she is and make her believe it. Take up a hobby or a class together and find a healthy eating plan for the two of you. c) Why complain? Who wants to date a fatso anyway?! LAST WEEK: MuddledMum should pick Option A: Tell her what it is and why you think it is inappropriate for a young girl to get one. She obviously has an inkling about what it is and is comfortable asking you. Don’t let her think that you are either lying to her or worse, are ignorant. You don’t want her to stop trusting you.

society, due to their own fear of not being able to satisfy the woman, has conditioned women to believe that they are supposed to be the passive partner in sex and that active sex is a male domain.
Why are Indian girls so shy?
I am 25-year-old single man of Indian origin. I have lived in USA most of my life. I am frustrated over one thing. I just wanted to know why girls in India feel so shy to have sex and feel inhibited during sexual act though they enjoy sex. Why is it so? While in USA I found many American girls who are nymphomaniacs. Why are Indian girls so repressed? WOMEN have been conditioned to believe that an open display of passion during sex is

‘unladylike’, and they fear being labelled as ‘nymphomaniacs’. This is the reason why women rarely give in to their natural physical urges and why they don’t uninhibitedly indulge in sex with an unbridled passion. In actuality, women are capable of multiple orgasms and therefore, the men in our male dominated
Does loss of semen in sleep or in any manner affect the physical or sexual health of a person? SEMEN is simply a mixture of the products of three glands. Secretions of the seminal vesicles constitute 60 per cent of semen, and the secretions of the prostate gland constitute 30 per cent of the semen. Sperms constitute only 10 per cent of the semen quantity. These glands function throughout your life after the puberty and continue to be capable of producing their secretions. Some boys worry that if they ejaculate too often, they will reduce the amount of semen in their body. They worry that they may run out of semen and won't have enough when they need it. This can never happen. A man will make sperms and semen from the start of puberty till his dying day. Also, remember that there is no way that too
much sperm and semen can accumulate or build pressure in our body. Our body is a perfectly-tuned machine. Our body has ways to get rid of excess sperms and semen, one of them being nightfall (nocturnal ejaculation).

India’s elections have injected confidence into the country’s financial markets, but a new government will need to address some long-standing problems, says the Singapore based banking and wealth management firm
By A Business Reporter
T
o date, the euphoria over India’s elections has been primarily felt through the financial markets. The Sensex is up over 6% year-to-date with the rupee among the best performing currencies in the region. Election results will be out on May 16. The “real impact on the ground is however important to sustain that optimism. This will require the newly-elected government to achieve close to 45-50% of the parliamentary seats and receive the strong mandate to initiate and followthrough on reforms. This will also be a departure from the fractious nature of the recent coalition politics, which had led to inaction and a lack of decisiveness on key economic agendas, says the Singapore based DBS group in a report titled 'Soaring Above India’s Ground Realities' . “We concur that the economy has bottomed out in recent quarters and a right mix of policy coordination
and governance should be able to kick-start the growth cycle. But, we are not convinced that a swing back above 7% is likely in next two years. While the cycle could benefit from a stable government, the up- turn will be gradual. And prudently so, given that the high growth phases in the last decade were accompanied by significant excesses on the external balances and fiscal deficits. Real GDP growth should improve from an estimated 4.8% in the 2014 fiscal year to 5.5% next year and above 6% thereafter. A clear majority poses modest upside risk to this projection, but likely to be offset by weak farm output on the back of inadequate rains, “ says DBS. According to it “the items on the to-do list for the incoming government are many, key among which are - fiscal consolidation, improving the business climate, complementing anti-inflation efforts and sustaining the improvement in the current account deficit. As these main goal posts are being addressed,
steps to improve governance, instill confidence in the government machinery and streamlining function across the different ministries are also important to feed the positive mood. Soon after taking office, there are also some challenges that need to be dealt with. Foremost among them will be likelihood of weak monsoon if the El Nino phenomenon plays out as feared. If the probability of the event increases and the likely impact on rains becomes more apparent by June, the government will need to outline a support mechanism for the farm sector ahead of time. Part of the strategy could be to release the excess government stocks of food grains to dampen any flare-up in prices. Agricultural output could also take a hit, necessitating a bigger role by domestic demand to uphold growth. On the external front, strength in the US and Eurozone recoveries and rising US interest rates will need to be watched closely.
700 Swiss Bank Account Holders Being Watched Also includes 10-15 listed Indian companies and some really big names, some figuring in the lists of richest persons and biggest companies in India By A Business Reporter
A
s India steps up its pressure on Switzerland to get details of suspected tax evaders having bank accounts in the European nation, a discreet probe is underway of each stock market dealing of over 100 entities linked to these cases to detect possible re-routing of black money. The entities under watch include individuals whose names figure in a list of over 700 Swiss bank account holders, as also the bankers and associates related to certain banks whose Switzerland-based branches are under scanner. Refusing to disclose the name of these individuals, banks or the listed companies under scanner, a senior government official said 'these include some really big names and those figuring in the lists of richest persons and biggest companies, but that disclosure of further details at this moment may jeopardise the probes that are still
in the initial stages. Besides, 10-15 listed Indian companies including a few blue-chip names directly or indirectly linked to these banks and their Indian customers are also under a close tab for any suspected market manipulations, senior officials said. It is suspected that some of these entities may have brought back their illicit wealth through the stock market route, by using complex fund structures of certain overseas funds, including those floated by select European banking giants. The official said that a few large global banks are under scanner, although it is also possible that the banks themselves might be unaware of the illicit activities being carried out by their executives for the Benefit of their clients, reports PTI Officials believe that these bankers are suspected to have first convinced their clients to move their funds to non-Swiss locations like Singapore, Dubai and London
before eventual transmission to India, to avoid the ever-growing glare or regulatory and intelligence agencies on funds and entities linked to Switzerland. While jurisdictions like Mauritius and Cyprus earlier used to be preferred as such intermediary locations, these places have themselves come under scanner of Indian agencies and therefore bankers are opting for some new routes.

An IRF is a contract between a buyer and a seller agreeing to future delivery of interest-bearing assets such as government bonds.
MFs Sell Shares Worth Rs 2,700 Cr In Apr By A Business Reporter
C
ontinuing their selling spree for the 8th month in a row, mutual funds offloaded shares worth about Rs 2,700 crore in April on redemption pressure. On the other hand, they pumped in nearly Rs 50,000 crore in the debt market during the month. As per the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) data, mutual funds offloaded a net amount of Rs 2,698 crore from equities. This was the 8th consecutive month of net outflows by mutual funds after they invested a net sum of Rs 1,607 crore in the stock market in August. Since the beginning of the year, mutual funds have sold shares worth Rs 10,450 crore. However, they have taken a bullish stance on the debt market during the period and have made a net investment of Rs 2.57 lakh crore. "Mutual funds
have seen a rise in inflows mainly due to gains in debt fund. However, equity funds have been facing redemption pressure for some time," a market participant said. "Equity fund investors have been pulling out at higher levels of the market, indicating their lack of confidence in the market's ability to sustain at these levels," he added. Analysts are however optimistic about equity schemes in 2014 on hopes that a stable government after the general elections this month will help boost stock markets. A
HMEDABAD: Up against an outfit that is struggling to stay afloat, fancied Rajasthan Royals will look to consolidate their position in the pecking order when they lock horns with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the ongoing seventh Indian Premier League (IPL) here tomorrow. Rajasthan Royals staged a dramatic fightback to down Kolkata Knight Riders by 10 runs in their last match, while Sunrisers Hyderabad were overshadowed by Royal Challengers Bangalore. Led by inspiring Australian allrounder Shane Watson, Rajasthan are placed third in the points table with five wins and two reverses, while the Southern team is struggling to keep their chances alive in the competition having already suffered four defeats in six games to be placed seventh in the eight-team cash-rich tournament. Watson has always been the key man in the RR set-up and it will be no
different this time around. The Aussie, who struck a 20-ball 31 to go with his 3/21 with the ball, will look to do better with the willow at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera. Young Karun Nair has shown promise at the top of the order and RR can expect a lot from him. Ajinkya Rahane has been fairly consistent and he would look to continue in same vein. For the opposition bowlers, there is also the talented Sanju Samson and Steven Smith. It may be noted that their top four batsmen made significant contributions in the come-from-behind win over KKR. 42-year-old leg-spinner Pravin Tambe continues to catch attention with his impressive performance, the last coming against KKR. Even with the ball, Watson always wants to there at the thick of things. Tim Southee and James Faulkner are the other two specialist bowlers for Rajasthan. Their bowlers showed a lot of char-
Pollard, Starc fined for ugly spat M
UMBAI: Kieron Pollard of Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Mitchell Starc have been fined for an ugly spat during the Indian Premier League match between the two teams at Wankhede Stadium here. Pollard has been fined 75 per cent of his match fee for throwing his bat at Starc, while the Australian fast bowler was fined 50 per cent of his match fee for “conduct contrary to the spirit of the game” last night. “Kieron Pollard of Mumbai Indians and Mitchell Starc of Royal Challengers Bangalore were both fined after an incident in the first innings,” a statement from the IPL organisers stated.
The unpleasant incident between the two players took place in the 17th over of the Mumbai innings when Starc continued with his delivery stride despite Pollard pulling out of his batting stance. As the Aussie fired the ball at the West Indian, the batsman advanced menacingly towards Starc and flung his willow at the bowler but, luckily, it slipped out of the Trinidadian’s hand and dropped near him. A fuming Pollard had a word with the umpire, complaining about the bowler’s conduct. In the previous ball, after bowling a bouncer that sailed over Pollard’s head, Starc mouthed something which the bigbuilt West Indian simply brushed
away with a wave of his hand. After the bat lay on the turf, the two on-field umpires intervened to talk to the angry players as Chris Gayle, playing for RCB, came on to calm his West Indian teammate. Fines were also handed to the two team captains — Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli — for maintaining a slow-over rate. Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit was handed a Rs. 24 lakh penalty for his second over-rate offence, while first-timer Kohli was fined Rs. 12 lakh. Also, “each of the other 10 members of the Mumbai Indians team was fined the lesser of Rs. 6 lakh or 25 per cent of his match fee.”
It’s something we don’t want to see on cricket field: Vettori M
UMBAI: Royal Challengers Bangalore coach Daniel Vettori was pained to see the ugly onfield spat between RCB bowler Mitchell Starc and Mumbai Indians’ batsman Kieron Pollard in an IPL game here but preferred to wait for the match referee’s verdict before apportioning blame. “I haven’t had a chance to talk to Mitchell or anyone else involved. It’s obviously something we don’t want to see on the cricket field. But we will wait for match referee (Andy Pycroft) to make his ruling,” Vettori said after the match here last night. “I am sure the match referee would be involved. Let’s wait and see what he says before we speculate. I think we should sit tight and not judge the incident,” he added. The incident referred to was the hurling of the cricket bat by West Indies all-rounder Pollard at Australian left-arm pacer Starc after the latter delivered the ball to him despite the batsman having backed off from the crease.
acter when they stopped KKR, who were at one stage cruising along at 121 for one, to reducing them to 123 for six and eventually running away with the game. As far as Sunrisers Hyderabad are concerned, skipper Shikhar Dhawan will need to lead from the front. A good start is of paramount importance in this form of the game, and Dhawan knows it too well. He has the aggressive Aaron Finch for company and if the duo gets going, it will be ominous for the opposition. The in-form David Warner lends muscle to the middle-order, with allrounder Darren Sammy following him in the batting order. Pace spearhead Dale Steyn will lead the attack with the Indian duo of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ishant Sharma playing the support cast. Sammy and Irfan Pathan are the other two medium pacers, while Karn Sharma will shoulder the responsibility in the spin department.

Kohli is most searched IPL player this season
N
EW DELHI: Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli takes the top spot as the most searched IPL player this season, closely followed by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Yuvraj Singh from Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captured the third position. With one of the most stunning catches taken in cricket history against Royal Challengers Bangalore to his credit, IPL debutant Chris Lynn (KKR) takes the fourth spot as the most searched player. Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) lead batsman Virendra Sehwag may not have scored big runs on the ground yet, but continues to attract a lot of queries from his fans on Google Search, thus puttting him up at the fifth spot in the table. Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Gautam Gambhir and Kings XI star performer Glenn Maxwell with three match-winning knocks in this edition of IPL, has also found place in top 10 IPL players on Google Search.
Players need to be vigilant: Dravid on fixing A
HMEDABAD: Rajasthan Royals’ mentor Rahul Dravid although expressed happiness that no spotfixing or match-fixing controversy has happened till now in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League, he said the players need to keep their eyes and ears open all the time. “Its good that no such incident (match fixing) has surfaced this time. But, we (players and teams) all need to be vigilant and keep our eyes and ears open, because, there will be people who will be wanting to spoil the game,” said Dravid at a press conference here today. Dravid along with the Royals captain Shane Watson, chief coach Paddy Upton and some other team players addressed a press conference here today on the eve of Rajasthan’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera. Since Jaipur is not given any IPL match this season, Ahmedabad has been declared as the home ground of Royals, and Dravid is hopeful of getting support of the locals here.
Rahul Dravid and Paddy Upton. “Ahmedabad has always proved lucky for RR in the past. We are having a good record here and fans here are equally passionate for the game. I am sure that local fans will see RR as their own team, as Ahmedabad doesn’t have their own team in IPL. I hope that fans will support us in upcoming games.” He also lauded the superb bowling performance of the 42-year-old spinner Pravin Tambe.
You have to bowl without fear in T20: Harbhajan UMBAI: Considering that the for runs. You will go for runs, but at M margin for error is very less in the same time, you have to have the Twenty20 leagues such as IPL, vet- courage to accept the challenge and eran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh says it is important to “have courage and bowl without fear” in the slambang format where batsmen call the shots. Playing for Mumbai Indians in the ongoing seventh edition of the Indian Premier League, Harbhajan last night turned in an impressive performance during his side’s win over Royal Challengers Bangalore, claiming the important wicket of a marauding Chris Gayle. “In this format, you cannot save yourself and think that you won’t go
bowl without fear,” Harbhajan said. “You have to take those risks and that is what I look to do. When I was bowling to Gayle, I was only planning to get him out rather than giving him a single. The best way to keep batsmen quiet is to get them out rather than being defensive.” The experienced campaigner, said he has always enjoyed being challenged.“I have played a lot of cricket under pressure all these years and this is also one of the stages in my career where I am giving my best for my side.”

EW DELHI: Continuing with its initiative of recognising the efforts of players who have brought laurels to the country, Hockey India (HI) will felicitate the greats, who won the only World Cup for India in the year 1975 at Kuala Lumpur, on May 14. Besides felicitating the players, HI will also announce the Indian squad for the upcoming FIH World Cup to be held in The Hague, Netherlands from May 31 to June 15. Hockey India has invited all 13 living members of the 1975 World Cup winning team in the capital, where they will be presented with a token one-time payment of Rs. 1,75,000 each. Speaking on the occasion Narinder Batra, Secretary General, Hockey India said, “It’s a great honour for us to felicitate the legends who made us proud of being the Champion Holders of the 1975 World Cup. These initiatives are an effort to make the present team believe that they too can do what their seniors have achieved in the past.” HI started the initiative of felicitating players in 2012, when all the living Olympic gold medallists were invited and presented one-

K
ARACHI: Pakistan’s banned leg-spinner Danish Kaneria has refused to give up on his efforts to get the life ban imposed on him by the England Cricket Board removed even after a commercial High Court in London dismissed his appeal. Instead Kaneria challenged the ECB to go public with the evidence against him on the basis of which they imposed the life ban on him way back in 2012. “My lawyers have not got the detailed judgement copy as yet from the commercial court but once we get it we will decide on our future course of action. But I am not beaten or have given up as yet because these charges against me are incorrect,” Kaneria told PTI. The leg-spinner further accused the ECB of influencing the London commercial court against him. Kaneria said the decision to dismiss his appeal took almost a year in the commercial court due to the ECB’s undue influence, otherwise the result could have been announced much earlier. “I challenge the ECB to make the evidence against me public so that the world will know whether I’ve committed a crime or not,” he said. Kaneria’s strong stance came even after the ECB urged him to admit his guilt.

He was also a part of two Olympics Games in Mexico 1968 (bronze) and 1972 (bronze). He won the Arjuna Award in 1970 and Padamshree in 1992 for his contribution to the sport. Ashok Kumar, son of legendary late Major Dhyan Chand, is the first of two Indians who represented the country in four World Cup tournaments, including Barcelona 1971 (bronze), 1973 Amsterdam (silver), Kuala Lumpur 1975 (gold) and Buenos Aires 1978. He was also instrumental in scoring the winning goal for India against Pakistan in the finale of the 1975 World Cup. Saina, Srikanth to lead Indian teams in Thomas and Uber Cup N
EW DELHI: London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal and Thailand Grand Prix champion K Srikanth will spearhead the Indian challenge at the Li-Ning BWF Thomas and Uber Cup Finals to be held at the Siri Fort Sports Complex here from May 18 to 25. The 24-year-old Saina will lead charge in the Uber Cup competition and world No. 18 Srikanth will be shouldering the responsibility in the Thomas Cup as India went with five singles and five doubles players in both the squads, selected on the basis of world rankings. With the maximum number of players allowed in the squad being 10, many teams have gone for four singles and six doubles players. Besides Saina, other singles members in the Uber Cup team include world champion bronze medallist P V Sindhu, National Games champion Arundhati Pantawane, world No. 57 Tanvi Laad, world No. 65 P C Thulasi. Commonwealth Games gold medallist pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa, who recently won a bronze at the Asian Badminton Championship, will lead in doubles while others in same section include Aparna Balan, N Sikki Reddy and Pradnya Gadre. “Uber Cup is the biggest tournament in India and we are focussed to do well. We have got a decent draw. We need to focus
and give our best and play with confidence and I am sure we will do well,” Ashwini told PTI. In Thomas Cup, the other singles members include world No. 21 Parupalli Kashyap, world No. 30 R M V Guru Sai Dutt, world No. 35 Sourabh Varma, while world No. 52 B Sai Praneeth have been selected ahead of world No. 42 H S Prannoy and world No. 49 Anand Pawar. “It is a prestigious tournament and there are no easy draws here. It is difficult to predict where we will finish in the tournament. The team will give their best in every match and I think we should get into the last-eight stages in Uber Cup,” chief coach Pullela Gopichand said. “The men’s draw is tough. But I think except for Lee Chong Wei, every singles match we have a chance,” he added. Meanwhile, world champion
Lin Dan and world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei will lead the parade of star badminton players. Dan, who won his fifth world title last year, has not been very active on the international circuit this year, but he has been still named in the Chinese squad as their fourth singles player. This would mean that the world No. 58 can only play the third singles in any match. As per the rules of the tie, the singles players are nominated to play the rubbers according to their world rankings and hence the last ranked player in the team has to play the third singles. The other singles members in the Chinese team include world No. 2 Chen Long, world No. 6 Pengyu Du and world No. 16 Houwei Tian, who has been picked ahead of world No. 7 Zhengming Wang.

MADRID: Fifth seeds Sania Mirza and Cara Black had little problem in dispatching HaoChing Chan and Chanelle Scheepers as they scored a comfortable straight sets victory to progress to the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open, here today. The Indo-Zimbabwean team defeated the Taipei-Protea pair 6-4 6-1 in little over an hour in the second round contest of the euro 3,671,405 clay court tournament. Sania and Cara, winner of the Portugal Open last week, raced to 4-1 lead but Chan and Scheepers reduced the margin to make it 3-4. However, the Taeipei-Chinese pair could not sustain the momentum as Sania and Cara proved too good for them. Sania and Cara will now fight it with either wild card entrants Italian Francesca Schiavone and her Spanish partner Silvia Soler-Espinosa or the top seeds Su-Wei Hsieh from Taipei and Shuai Peng of China.

Mendis shines as Sri Lanka prove too strong for Ireland
DUBLIN: Ajantha Mendis starred with both bat and ball as Sri Lanka enjoyed a comfortable start to their tour of the British Isles with a 79-run win over Ireland in the first one-day international in Dublin. Mendis made a useful 18 not out in a total of 219 for eight, where No 8 Nuwan Kulasekara topscored with an undefeated 42, and the unorthodox spinner then took three wickets for 27 runs yesterday. UMBAI: After five straight defeats in the UAE, Mumbai Indians charged to their second consecutive win in IPL 7, beating Royal Challengers Bangalore here and the team’s stumper-batsman Chidambaram Gautam feels things are finally looking up for the defending champions. “We have been waiting for this moment the past couple of games. We are executing our plans and things are falling in place. We are doing really well,” said Gautam who played his part by scoring a brisk 30 off 28 balls with three sixes and two fours, opening the innings with Ben Dunk. MI set a stiff target of 188 for RCB to chase and the visitors fell
short by 19 runs to provide the hosts their 10th win at home going back to last season’s beginning. Gautam, not a flamboyant batsman in Ranji Trophy where he represents Karnataka, said he has been given the license to go for the big shots by the MI team management. “I felt really good and the wicket was good to bat on really though initially it was doing a bit. I am enjoying my game to hit those big shots. The team management is completely behind me. They have given me the license to go and express myself,” said the young batsman who played a few seasons for Royal Challengers Bangalore before shifting base to MI.

Brief Scores: Delhi Daredevils 160 for 5 in 20 overs (J P Duminy 40 not out, Dinesh Karthik 36; Umesh Yadav 1/26). Kolkata Knight Riders 161 for 2 in 18.2 overs.(Gautam Gambhir 69, Robin Uthappa 47; Wayne Parnell 2/21).
EW DELHI: Skipper Gautam Gambhir stroked his way to a fantastic 69 to steer Kolkata Knight Riders to a comfortable eight-wicket victory over a hapless Delhi Daredevils at the Feroz Shah Kotla ground today. Chasing a modest 161 for victory, Gambhir and Robin Uthappa (47) stitched together a 106-run partnership to provide a perfect winning platform as Kolkata cantered to the target in 18.2 overs. Starting on cautious note, the duo gradually gained the momentum and punished the Delhi attack led by Mohammad Shami. Gambhir picked a sliding leg-side delivery from Laxmi Ratan Shukla for a six at midwicket region to make his intent clear in the fifth over of the innings as the southpaw got his second half-century of the season. Uthappa also showed his aggressive side against JeanPaul Duminy to come down against the South African offspinner and hit a huge six in the widish long-on region. The duo gained confidence with every passing delivery to demoralise the Delhi attack as skipper Kevin Pietersen kept juggling his bowling options. South African left-arm pacer Wayne Parnell finally
Maxwell scores 90 to take Kings XI to 231 for four C
UTTACK: Glenn Maxwell struck fours and sixes almost at will in a stupendous exhibition of strokeplay as his 90 off just 38 balls steered Kings XI Punjab to a mammoth 231 for four in their IPL match in Cuttack. Maxwell, the most prolific scorer this season, continued with his show of incredible batting prowess as he butchered the Chennai bowlers to submission to almost single-handedly take Punjab to the highest total of the IPL-7 so far after his side was put into bat. Except for Mohit Sharma (2/15), all the Chennai bowlers were punished heavily with Ishwar Pandey (0/41), Dwayne Smith (1/36), Ravindra Jadeja (0/37) and R Ashwin (0/38) being at the receiving end as the 25-yearold Australian hit six fours and eight sixes in front of a packed crowd at Barabati Stadium. He stitched 135-runs with David Miller (47 off 32 balls)
for the third wicket from just 10.4 overs after the duo came together in the sixth over at 38 for two. The duo added a phenomenal 88 runs in the five overs after the halfway mark, scoring 17, 14, 21, 18 and 14 each over with the 100-run partnership between Maxwell
and Miller coming up in just 8.4 overs. Punjab added an incredible 162 runs in the second half of their innings with captain George Bailey chipping in with a cameo of 13-ball 40 not out towards the end to take his side to the fifth highest total in IPL history.
managed to deny Uthappa his fifty as the Karnataka batsman was caught behind for 47 off 34 deliveries. Manish Pandey (23 not out) then played the perfect supporting role to make sure that Kolkata do not repeat the Ahmedabad fiasco, where the team lost six wickets for two runs, eventually gifting the match to Rajasthan Royals. On a day when nothing worked for Delhi and everything went in Gambhir’s favour, the left-hander did survive a drop catch and an open run out. He was finally caught behind while trying to
pull a rising Parnell delivery as Dinesh Karthik gloved a beauty in the 18th over. It was left to Kallis (10 not out) to complete the formalities. Earlier electing to bat on a hot and humid day, Delhi posted a respectable 160 for five in 20 overs. Duminy smacked 40 off 28 balls while Kedar Jadhav blasted 26 off 15 to manage a 55-run unbeaten stand and provide the necessary impetus in the end. Kolkata opened the bowling with off-spinner Suryakumar Yadav with Kallis sharing the new ball.
Umesh Yadav drew first blood for Kolkata in the third over, getting De Kock (10)caught by Gautam Gambhir at mid-on. Pietersen (6) looked completely out of sorts in his short stay at the wicket and after being circumspect against the spinners the England batsman ran himself out while trying to take a needless run. Murali Vijay (24) and Dinesh Karthik (36) then tried to stabilise the innings as KKR continued to juggle their bowling options. The duo added 31 runs for the third-wicket.
