onsidering the current political scenario in the country, NaMo magic will play vital role in the elections slated this month in four states, believe bookies in the illegal betting business, popularly known as Satta Bazzar in India, who are expecting a turnover of more than Rs 8,000 crore. Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh (MP) and Chhattisgarh go to polls this month and bookies are predicting a clean sweep for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in all four states. There is a belief among the bookies, formed after the Bihar bomb blasts during Narendra Modi’s rally, that elections this time could witness violence. "Due to this, all the bets would be called-off in the event of the death of any prominent leader during blasts or other violent acts during elections,” said a Dubai-based bookie. It is for the first time that such a dictate has been issued by top bookies.

The makers of two Marathi films are locked in a tussle over whose work should carry the honour of being termed the first 3D film in that language

n response to a defamation case (393/SW/2013) filed by Satyaprakash Mangatani, producer of Marathi film Aai Mala Maru Nako, the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate has issued summons to another film maker Mahesh Kothare directing him and Viacom 18 to appear before the court on December 11. The Metropolitan Magistrate S.E. Bangar has issued the summons through the Vile Parle police station to Kothare and others, based on Mangatani’s complaint that despite him being the producer of the first Marathi 3D film Aai Mala Maru Nako, a campaign has been launched through the media by Kothare, claiming that the film Zapatlela 2 produced by him is in fact the first Marathi 3D film and Mangatani’s claim was false. Mangtani has sought relief under sections 420, 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code, saying that the court should direct Kothare to stop the misinformation campaign and pay him a compensation of Rs.2 crore. Mangatani had produced the film Aai Mala Maru Nako based on the topic of female foeticide, on a

It was released in February 2012 through big multiplexes like INOX, PVR & BIG Cinemas and ran for over 50 days. The film featuring Jayashri T, Viju Khote, Mukesh Khanna and others was produced with a 100 per cent Indian cast and crew, entered the ‘India Book of Records’ and received a certificate issued by the Central Board of Film Certification which clearly mentioned that Aai Mala Maru Nako was the first 3D

Marathi film, Mangatani says. In contrast, Kothare’s Zapatlela 2. was a sequel to the original one made in the early 90's. The film was loosely-based on the English horror flick Child's Play. Zapatlela 2 brought before the audience the menacing doll, ‘Tatya Vinchu’, back on screen after almost 20 years. It was released this June. Commenting on the issue, Adinath Kothare, son of Mahesh Kothare, told the ADC that

‘Tatya Vinchu’ is almost like a mascot of Zapatlela 2. Zapatlela 2 was the first 3D Marathi film using “different type of technology” with the help of foreign crews. It was a multi-crore rupee film and did exceedingly well at the box office. Mangatani might have shot have shot his film on Sony digital camera, and the debate at this state was pointless, he claimed. However Mangatani maintained that Kothare and Viacom’s various media statements had tarnished his clean and honest image in the in-

However, if Patrick Dou, Vice President of NationalChip, a Chinese digital TV developing company is to be believed, you will soon be able to watch YouTube videos on your TV sets through your set top boxes. NationalChip has come out with a range of new set top box chips catering to the needs to the Indian market. Apart from delivering an improved HD picture quality, the GX 3201 will also allow users to access what they call Over-The-Top services (OTTs) including YouTube and Hungama through the use of onboard Wi-Fi. For those interested in better picture and an easier and more responsive user interface, without the frills, the GX3001R and the GX3012Q are more cost effective without compromising on speed and clarity. Not for another six months – at least SPECIAL REPORT

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2013

T

HE good news is that the Mantralaya is going to look interiorly like a corporate office. The bad news is that it is not likely to happen any time soon, and even the February deadline (extended from the present November) is unlikely to be kept. Though Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has moved into the refurnished Mantralaya office on sixth floor, the fragmented state headquarters with scattered departments in many parts of the city is unlikely to come under one roof at least for the next six months. And while it may be much more swanky than before, the question that is exercising the minds of people is – will the state headquarters be as functional as it was before the fire that damaged it so badly? The helpless government has now admitted that the makeover project is running behind schedule. However, the administration is tightlipped even about whether all the departments will come together by mid-2014. In June last year, the top four floors of Mantralaya were gutted in a major blaze. This had created a state of disarray which directly affected the functioning of the bureaucracy. Initially, the administration showed a feisty spirit by resuming work in Mantralaya merely four days after the blaze. But indecision and a dillydallying approach virtually forced it on to the back foot, badly affecting not only the administration but even the work of repair and refurbishment. As a result, even after 17 months of the fire, many staffers operate from one temporary location, while their secretaries and chiefs lounge in another. Apart from the new administrative building and Vidhan Bhavan near Mantralaya many departments have been shifted to World Trade Centre, the GT hospital complex, St George’s hospital compound and the Inox building at Nariman Point. A few departments has been shunted out into the Bandra-Kurla Complex. This arbitrary arrangement of offices has kept files and documents in a state of continuous motion, flying from one building to another, making people run from pillar to post. There is also much heartburn over the way offices were shunted out and broken up in the wake of the fire.An official revealed that temporary arrangements made by the General Administration Department (GAD) was totally unplanned. The allotment of places for various departments was done haphazardly. In the beginning the Urban Development department has been relocated to four different places, while the Water Resources department was spread over seven different locations. The Home department is spread on different floors in the World Trade Centre, while the general administration department is working from two places. This is causing great inconvenience to the common people who visit Mantralaya from different parts of the state. Most of their time is wasted in searching the department and after the hectic exercise if they mange to trace the office the officials cannot be located as they are in the meeting with a superior at some different location. Last year’s fire caused extensive damage to the six-storey building and the initial estimate for repairs was given as Rs 138crore, with the project finally starting last November. There was a delay of three months as the lowest bid of Rs 168 crore by Unity Infrastructure was

The November deadline for the Mantralaya repair and refurbishment has come – and will go. The deadline has now been shifted up to February, but it is unlikely to be kept. Meanwhile, costs are also going up. Suyash Padate reports...

`1,800-cr makeover plan

A space-frame glass atrium over the central courtyard, grand steps leading to the façade, 14 escalators for public use, advanced fire-fighting systems, central air-conditioning, dedicated lifts for VIPs and a rooftop garden are some of the aspects of Phase One of the Mantralaya makeover project. It will be a stark transformation of the once unplanned building to a state-of-theart corporate style state headquarters. In 2007, a Rs.1,800 crore makeover plan was bagged by IndiaBulls. It was scrapped in 2010, ostensibly because it was regarded as “extravagant”. Currently, as the work of restoration proceeds, it is learned that Godrej is providing furniture worth Rs 15 crore while Philips is providing lighting worth Rs 5 crore.

CM to move on 6th floor

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, who is about to move into the new sixth floor office, is presently working from the first floor as well as the Vidhan Bhavan. Other ministers have been conducting their duties either from their official residences or their chambers at Vidhan Bhavan. Minister of state for home Satej Patil has been allotted a chamber at Vidhan Bhavan, while his staffers are seen reporting to his official residence at Sarang building. Nearly 20 secretaries of various departments have been relocated, separated from those working under them.

much higher than the state’s planned expenditure. The firm later quoted Rs 138 crore and bagged the contract. The other two bidders were Shapoorji Pallonji (Rs.167 crore) and Larsen & Toubro (Rs. 177 crore). A senior official on a condition of anonymity said that the process of floating tenders was slow; as a result, the final bid of Rs 138 crore was awarded to Unity Infraprojects in November 2012. Indecision on the part of the senior officers and ministers led to delay. The cost of the restoration of the entire building has already crossed Rs 230 crore. The total amount after project completion may be even more than double the estimated cost, including the cost of shifting offices elsewhere.

When contacted in the matter, Shyamal Kumar Mukherjee, secretary, Public Works Department, admitted that the makeover project is running behind schedule. He said, “The restoration work on the top three floors of the building is almost completed. The lower four floors would need an additional six months. We can say by February next year it will be completed. The cost of the escalators, audio-video systems, IT facilities, electrical fittings and furniture is above the contract cost of Rs 138 crore”. However, even after repeated queries he declined to disclose the details of the cost. The agreement with the contractor, Unity Infrastructure, for the restoration was for eight months

starting on December 26, 2012. The government has announced that it would offer a bonus of Rs. 2.5 lakh per day if the contractor completed the job before the deadline, but would charge a penalty of Rs. 5 lakh per day, if the work extended beyond the deadline. Both K.K. Avarsekar, chairman and managing director of Unity Infrastructure, and Raja Aederi, the architect who prepared the design of the restoration, said that the building would have fire-fighting and security mechanisms. The sprinklers and smoke detectors at every 150 sq. ft. would ensure 100 percent fire safety. According to Avarsekar, if the building had been vacated earlier, then the renovation work would have been completed much faster. Mantralaya

is a government building and due to which clearances from over 25 agencies had to be taken, he declared. “The delay was due to unavoidable circumstances. We were working in the building while the offices were still functioning. Sewage treatment plant and the retrofitting took a lot of time”, he added. Chief Secretary Jayant Banthia has already moved into his office on the sixth floor, the first to do so. Earlier the chief secretary’s office was on the fifth floor. Now it has been shifted to the sixth floor along with the offices of the Chief Minister and his deputy. The bigwigs will move in one after another. But when all the departments will come together has still remained an unanswered question.

t 12.30pm on Thursday, around 10 policemen, led by PI (law & order) Dattaram Vittal Girip allegedly beat up eight hawkers at IITPowai main gate which is a hawking zone. According to Dayashankar R. Singh, president of Azad Hawkers Union, in 2009 the Supreme Court in its order had said that till the central government implements National Hawking Policy, hawkers will not be removed from their hawing places. “The IIT Powai main gate area is

Powai cops beat hawkers declared as a hawking zone since December 9, 2003 itself. Therefore it is the high handedness of police and civic authorities that lead to the fracas which is very unfortunate”, added Singh. When ADC spoke to Y.L. Jadhav, the senior inspector of Powai police station, he said, “I am not aware of the incident. However, I will enquire into it”. Later in the day when hawkers’ president Singh approached the

senior inspector, he promised to look into the matter and also said that he will warn the inspector to be more cautious in dealing with the hawkers’ problems in future. Singh also said that inspector Girip told him that he took the action as women hawkers squatted inside municipal vehicles and did not allow civic officials to confiscate their wares. Hence, to give protection to civic officials he took this drastic step.

Continued from pg 1 « Bookies believe that the elections in these four states could be a semi-final of the 2014 Parliamentary elections. Further, the bookies are predicting that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) may not play spoil-sport as generally perceived. According to bookies, the AAP is not expected to win more than 8 seats in Delhi that has 70 assembly seats in all. For the BJP winning 28 seats in the state, the odds are 24 paise over every rupee bet. For Congress winning 22 seats, the odds are 28 paise over a rupee. Bookies believe Congress may win a maximum of 36 seats in Delhi this time, as compared to 43 they had won in the 2008 elections. The BJP had won only 23 seats in Delhi in 2008. In the state of Rajasthan, which is also currently under Congress rule, bookies are predicting an easy victory for the BJP. The odds on the saffron party winning 101 seats out of the 230 assembly seats in the state are 14 paise over every one-rupee bet. Bookies are willing to pay 26 paise over a rupee if Congress manages to win 60 seats in the state. The prediction is that Congress could win a maximum of 75 seats in Rajasthan, for which the odds are Rs 2.80 over every one-rupee bet. In 2008 elections in Rajasthan, Congress had won 96 seats while the BJP could corner only 78 seats. If the BJP wins 120 seats now, bookies are willing to pay Rs 2.50 over a rupee. MP has a 230 seat assembly, and bookies are expecting the BJP to retain its rule in the state with at least 130 seats, for which the odds are 20 paise over a rupee. For 135 seats the odd is 40 paise and for 140 seats of BJP, it is Rs 1.35 over a rupee. For Congress win of

A BMC inspection labelled it a breeding ground for mosquitoes adding to the spread of diseases like malaria and dengue. The corporation has therefore asked the varsity to either fill up the pool with mud or reconstruct it within seven days, failing which the varsity will be liable to pay a penalty. MU's Kalina campus has a swimming pool opposite the sports complex which has not been cleaned or had its water changed in years. As a result mosquitoes and other insects have started breeding here.

EC extends deadline for voter enrolment drive at 3 Graduates and 2 Teachers constituencies in the state

By Prashant Hamine

T

he Election Commission of India (EC) has extended the deadline for revision and enrolment drive for three Graduates and two Teachers constituencies in the state from October 30 to November 15. The three Graduate division constituencies include Aurangabad, Pune and Nagpur divisions. While the two Teachers constituencies are Amravati and Pune divisions. This is being done in view of the elections to these Legislative Council constituencies due next year. The qualifying date for enrolment to

these constituencies has been fixed as August 31, 2013. Unlike the enrolment for Lok Sabha and Assembly constituencies where ordinary voters who attain the age of 18 years are eligible to enroll as voters, in Graduates and Teachers constituencies all those who are graduates or are employed as teachers in educational institutions are eligible to enroll as voters. Another added advantage that the voters, especially for Teachers constituency, is that the teachers by virtue of being in teaching profession can cast votes twice — once for Teachers and another for Graduates constituency — by virtue of being qualified graduates. As

per EC’s latest data, there are 28,126 registered voters in Amravati division Teachers constituency and 91,445 registered voters in Pune division Teachers constituency. In the case of Aurangabad division Graduates constituency there are 2.72 lakh graduates enrolled as voters, in Nagpur division Graduates constituency there are 1.83 lakh graduates enrolled as voters. In Pune division Graduates constituency 3.78 lakh graduates are enrolled as voters. Overall in all the three Graduates and two Teachers constituencies there are 8.34 lakh graduates and 1.19 lakh teachers registered as voters as of now.

No power for the loom W

ith the increase in electricity tariff, power loom unit owners in Bhiwandi have decided to shut their looms from November 6 to 15, in a general meeting of Bhiwandi Power Loom Bachao Sangharsh Samiti on Wednesday. Torrent Power, which is the main source of providing electricity in Bhiwandi, had a franchise agreement with the Maharashtra Electricity Distribution Company for Bhiwandi circle for ten years beginning December 2006. However, the hike in electricity tariff and loss recovery in electricity billing cycles, had led the company to increase their rates by 40 to 60 percent. Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) is suffering huge losses in the form of theft of electricity and non-payment of bills. Power loom owners are not in a situation to bear the increased rates and burnt bundles of electricity bills in front of the Toronto Office in protest. Distortion in electricity bills by the Torrent Staff and black marketing in yarn roles (bheem) affected the power loom industry adversely. This shutdown will affect power loom workers, most of which worked on daily wages. A good 12 lakh power looms are located in Bhiwandiand even a day of shutdown will affect lives of many on a large scale. Ashish Rajbhar, a daily wage worker, said, “I am

working here since I was 20 year old. I gave my eight years to the power loom industry and this is the only source of income for my family. If this industry shuts down, I will have to go back to my native place in Utter Pradesh. To protect the common interests of the power loom industry, Suresh Tavare (member of parliament, Congress), Rupesh Mhatre (Shiv

Sena MLA), Rashid Tahir Momin (Sapa MLA) and Habif Baba (Social Worker) worked together to protect the Bhiwandi loom industry. “If the government fails to withdraw the hike in tariff rates, we will write a letter to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and the textile minister”, informed a Bhiwandi Power Loom Sangharsh Samiti member.

T

he mysterious disappearance of four citybased advertisement professionals finally proved to be a case of accident as rescue workers on Thursday fished out their car from Nira river along with the bodies of the three remaining occupants, who had set out on an excursion on November 1. The search for the missing car had been undertaken by police and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rescue workers after body of one of the four occupants of the vehicle -- Chintan Buch (28) - was recovered on Wednesday, indicating possibility of the car crashing over a bridge on river Nira along Pune-Bangalore highway. After pulling out the car with the help of crane and recovering bodies of three other victims - Pranav Lele

(29), Sahil Qureshi (28) and Shrutika Chandvani -- police officials said prima facie it appeared to be an accident, reports PTI. The group was supposed to drop 28-year-old Shrutika at her home at Kolhapur on their way to Karnataka. The car was last spotted at a toll check post at Khed on the highway. The relatives of the victims had lodged a missing complaint after their cell phones became unreachable on November 2. While Chintan's body was recovered from the river water, the other three victims remained in the car as they had their seat belts fastened, police added. The three bodies extricated from the car were sent for post-mortem. Autopsy of Chintan, who hailed from Vadodara, confirmed death by drowning.

Ponder awhile… “Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.” — Martin Luther King Jr.

Case against MP Kurup must go on S

HWETA MENON’s molestation complaint against Member of Parliament Peethambara Kurup has triggered nation-wide interest. She cut her speech at an event in Kollam, did not wait for the main function and made a beeline to the police station. The member of Parliament who appears to be compulsorily seeking cheap thrills touched her several times. He took her to the dais pushing her by the waist. And he would not let go of her hand. Finally, she had to ask him and only then he took his hand off. At the same function, Shweta had one more touching experience. He, according to her, was touching her back. Evidently he was less daring than the MP. The mindset of these two men is, to say the least, quite pathetic. Shweta is an attractive woman, but that does not mean one of our lawmakers can molest her – right in full view of the public. The MP must have thought that he, as a big all India VIP, had the right to molest her. He must have thought he was doing her a favour by touching her and that she would not dare object. He must have been quite surprised when she went and complained to the police. Shweta should not have forgiven the man: She withdrew her complaint. Why did she do it? Was she under pressure? Did the man go down on his knees and apologise? He must have done so. He also made a public apology. There are female netas who say that Shweta was quite happy with the touching incident. The incident brought her centrestage and people across the country were talking about it. It is a fact that some women – particularly those in the film industry, who will do anything to get publicity. To say the least, it would be a most unfair way of looking at the incident. Shweta should have gone for the jugular of the MP and got him disqualified and thrown out of Parliament.

HEN I saw our ‘secularist’ leaders gather together in Delhi last week for a conference to discuss communalism, I was gripped with a disorienting sense of deja vu. Not again, I found myself saying with a silent groan, not these same old characters from long ago saying the same old things that they have been saying for such a long time without conviction and without any other motive than to try and form a third front once more as if to deliberately repeat history as farce. Watching the likes of Deve Gowda, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Nitish Kumar, Sitaram Yechury, Prakash Karat and A.B. Bardhan stand on that stage and raise their arms up like schoolboys at some inter-school tournament made me conscious of the fact that all that had changed was that these gentlemen had aged since they last gathered together in the nineties to form a government headed by H.D. Deve Gowda. It was a shaky arrangement even then that would not have survived a single day without the support of the Congress Party and what these secularists are cooking once more is the same pulao or shall we call it khichdi?

ters that it was hard to keep count of them. It was then that realisation began to dawn that something was happening that could force the Congress Party out of power for the next five years and that this must be stopped at all costs. So it was that the ‘secularists’ were encouraged to band together in Delhi and raise the same tired old slogans and reiterate the same tired old political ideas that they have always spouted. The Congress Party has been in power long enough to know how to play every devious political game in the book and so it took them hardly any time at all to work out that if it was not going to be a Congress government in

at all. As if there was no Internet and Twitter and as if just the advent of Narendra Modi signaled the end of India as we know it, at least as they know it in the Delhi drawing rooms in which they spend most of their time. If that sounds strange to you who may believe that these worthy communists and secularists are humble people who live humbly in their desire to serve the poor then please seek an interview with them in Delhi and notice how they live. They may live in shabby fashion but they live in shabby fashion in bungalows whose market value runs into more than Rs.200 crore. The only private citizens who can afford to live in the bungalows of Lutyens’ Delhi are billionaires. Nothing has disturbed the ‘socialist’ life style of these secular leftists since 1947 and they fear Modi because they think he threatens it.

‘India First’

He brings with him new slogans like ‘India First’ and new economic ideas that appear to have nothing to do with the kind of socialism they espouse so they are rightly terrified that if Modi does somehow make it to Delhi the world as they know it will come to an end. This is why it has become so urgent for them to come together in the name of secularism. This is easily done because their interests and Let me give you some context here. Names make no difference to the would. He imparts it through one who to him. Allah, God, Gott, Dieu, Khuda, is a man in the eyes of the world, but God in Brahma, or Bhagwan, all these names of God is his consciousness. He sees his God in the sun, in the fire, in the idol which di- from the heavens, and God is busy speaking verse sects worship; and he recognizes Him in through all things, yet in order to speak to the all the forms of the universe, yet knowing Him to be beyond all form; God in all, and all in God, He being the Seen and the Unseen, the Only Being. God to the Sufi is not only a reli- deaf ears of many among us, it is necessary for gious belief, but also the highest ideal the Him to speak through the lips of a man. He has done this all through the history of man, every human mind can conceive. The Sufi, forgetting the self and aiming at great teacher of the past having been this the attainment of the divine ideal, walks con- Guiding Spirit living the life of God in human stantly all through life in the path of love and guise. In other words, their human guise consists light. In God, the Sufi sees the perfection of all that is in the reach of man’s perception and yet of various coats worn by the same person, who he knows him to be above human reach. He appeared to be different in each. Shiva, Budlooks to Him as the lover to his beloved, and dha, Rama, Krishna on the one side, Abraham, takes all things in life as coming from Him, Moses, Jesus, Mohammed on the other; and with perfect resignation. MATTER & SPIRIT

To the Sufi therefore there is only one Teacher, however differently He may be named at different periods of history, and He comes constantly to awaken humanity from the slumber of this life of illusion, and to guide man onwards towards divine perfection. As the Sufi progresses in this view he recognizes his Master, not only in the holy ones, but in the wise, in the foolish, in the saint and in the sinner, and has never allowed Master who is One alone, and the only One who can be and who ever will be, to disappear from his sight. The Persian word for Master is Murshid. The Sufi recognizes the Murshid in all beings of the would, and is ready to learn from young and old, educated and uneducated, rich and poor, without questioning from whom he learns. Then he begins to see the light of Risalat, the torch of truth which shines before him in every being and thing in the universe, thus he sees Rasul, his Divine Message Bearer, a living identity before him. Thus the Sufi sees the vision of God, the worshipped deity, in His immanence, manifest in nature, and life now becomes for him a perfect revelation both within and without. It is often for no other reason than clinging to the personality of their particular teacher, claiming for him superiority over other teachers, and degrading a teacher held in the same esteem by others, that people have separated themselves from one another, and caused most of the wars and factions and contentions which history records among the children of God. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

LETTERS Mission Mars a waste of time, money and energy!

INDIA’S maiden inter-planetary odyssey of Mars sans logic apart from being a waste of time, money and energy. It is only of academic interest and nothing else which a poor country like ours can ill afford. The spacecraft was successfully launched into earth orbit but would take several months and land on Mars in September 2014 at an exorbitant cost of several hundred crores with failure too not ruled out. Should India be launching such missions in sky when they are finding it hard to control vegetable prices and other prices of basic commodities on ground is a matter of serious debate, more so when it USELESS EXERCISE: The mission to Mars which has already cost Rs.450 crore, is would not serve any purpose. Is JD(U) with Cong yet? IT appears that even after a few months of divorcing the NDA over the issue of “secularism”, the JD(U) has not yet firmly attached itself to the UPA II band-wagon led by the Congress. On the contrary, the Bihar CM was seen sharing the dais with the leaders of other parties engaged in forging a non-Cong, non-BJP front. In order to nudge the JD(U) into falling in line, a sort of reminder seems to have been issued by the UPA II govt. Questionable largesse THE Karnataka govt. recently announced Rs.50K to Muslim girls for their marriages, provided the family income is less than Rs 1.5 lakh annually. This move throws up a few questions such as (i) the basis on which this income is worked out as a cut off; (ii) how would it be confirmed that a family actually falls within this limit; (iii) why are other minority communities being excluded from the scheme; (iv) why can’t the scheme be extended to every Indian who has an income of less than Rs.1.5 lakh; (v) the Congress has always claimed to be a secular party and champion of the downtrodden throughout the country. Ground realities show it practices just the contrary. — Harischandra Parshuram, Juhu

Modi’s got enough security THE demand made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for adequate or more security for Narendra Modi, the prime ministerial candidate of the party in view of the Patna blasts is a political gimmick as he has been given the best and efficient security which no other political leader enjoys in the country. Since the law does not permit to give him extraordinary security in line with that of the prime minister, BJP is playing dirty politics and trying to pressurise the people to believe that Modi will definitely be the next PM which shows that they are

Pay teachers their salaries

— Jorhat Singh, Kandivli

AS reported, after NAMO was declared prime ministerial candidate of BJP, he is working very hard and has taken over full responsibility and is approaching various sections of our society with full gusto, courage and expressing his attitude to the full dismay and horror of Congress party and JD(U) which cannot digest his way of approach or method and are almost suffering

It is a very proud moment for all Indians and all scientists associated with this mission deserve recognition and appreciation. I feel more happy to see the highly encouraging reports in foreign newspapers and media on India’s Mars Mission. Incidentally, one should watch the latest English movie ‘Gravity’. Watch it in 3D to get an idea about the difficulties of space mission and the real feeling of being in space. For a change….no politician can take credit for this mission!

BLOT ON EDUCATION: How can teachers perform their duties efficiently if the government does not bother to pay them salaries for 13 years?

THIS refers to the front page report ‘Bad luck: 13 years without pay!’ (ADC, Nov. 7). It is very disquieting to note that as many as 21,000 teachers across the state have not been paid their salaries for 13 long years, forcing them to double up as rickshaw-pullers, gardeners and waiters in restaurants to feed their families. This appears to be the result of the implementation of the government’s permanent non-grants commission under which schools are not provided grants from its coffers for paying them. The affected teachers have been on hunger strike at the Azad Maidan for the past one week. If they do not get their salaries for years, how will they teach properly? And if they are not able to perform well, the students suffer and the education scenario in the country is already not satisfactory. It is high time that the government stepped in and arranged to pay the suffering teachers their salaries without any further delay. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane

SUSHI EXPRESS Hop on to this ride as the 48HRS team takes you through some of the best sushi available in the city

B

efore we present our favourite picks of sushi from across the city, we’d like to give you a brief history of this Japanese food that consists of cooked vinegar flavoured sticky rice combined with other ingredients — usually raw fish or other seafood. It is widely believed that sushi came into existence in the second century A.D. in Southeast Asia, not as a dish, but as a way to preserve and keep meat fresh for a longer duration. They used to cure meat and fish and wrap it in rice, where it was left to ferment for several months. Eventually, when enough time had passed, they would discard the rice and eat the cured insides. 10 centuries later, people started adding vinegar to their sushi to aid in the fermentation process. This way, they didn’t have to wait so many months for the sushi to be ready. Coming to the present time, the contemporary version of sushi was created by Hanaya Yohei in the late 1790’s in Japan. It was an early form of fast food that was not fermented (therefore prepared quickly) and could be conveniently eaten with one’s hands or chopsticks. Today, sushi is famous worldwide and there are several restaurants that are dedicated to this culinary delight. Mumbai has quite a few restaurants that make this dish either in an authentic manner or by presenting it with a unique twist. We visited several restaurants to bring you a list of some of the best places to get sushi in the city.

SuShi and More Sushi and More is the perfect place to check out if you want sushi delivered to your doorstep. The prices are quite reasonable, but the only hiccup is that you might have to wait for a while till your order gets to you. However, the freshly made sushi makes the wait worth it. In terms of flavour, they have a wide variety of both vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian options. Some of their must-try sushi includes the non-vegetarian California Roll (crabmeat, cucumber, lettuce and flying fish roe) and the Tuna Tartare Roll (minced tuna with spring onion). Those who like a little bit of spice can opt for the Prawn Tempura Roll (prawn tempura and spicy mayo) or the Spicy Salmon Roll (fresh salmon and Japanese chilli paste). All these dishes are priced in the range of `300-400 for eight pieces. They also have platters which will cost you `650 (14 pieces) and `800 (20 pieces) and will include a mix of sushi from their menu. Where www.sushiandmore.com

noM noM Authenticity and Nom Nom go hand-in-hand and so, it is hardly a surprise that if an authentic sushi experience is what you want, Nom Nom is the place to go to. The experience isn’t just limited to your taste-buds; they have a live sushi counter where the chef will serve you freshly made sushi. continued on pg 14 «

continued from pg 13 « The choice is quite wide and in terms of taste, almost every dish manages to hold its own. So, the best thing to order at Nom Nom would be the chef recommended Assorted Sushi Selection (`950) that has four pieces. Two varieties still stand out — the California Rolls (`690 for eight pieces) have a nice tangy aftertaste to them while the Salmon & Cheese Rolls (`790) have a creamy flavour that blends well with the strong pink ginger and wasabi. Where Nom Nom in Bandra (W) and Seven Bungalows Contact 9920055059

>> Aoi has very unique sushi offerings that will delight your tastebuds

Global Fusion We’ve had sushi at the Andheri (E) and Bandra (W) outlets of Global Fusion, but we prefer the Bandra branch. The sushi section in this restaurant will delight sushi lovers as they have several vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. From the vegetarian range, their best is the mushroom and corn sushi. But, sushi is only sushi when there’s seafood involved! Their salmon and snapper sushi is good and while we haven’t tried it yet, they also offer chicken sushi too. The sushi comes with pickled ginger which is a highlight on its own. Paired with the sushi, it will be like heaven in your mouth which will make you keep coming back for more. They have a package pricing when it comes to their sushi counter. You can have unlimited sushi at a price of `699 for lunch from Monday to Saturday, `1,079 for dinner from Sunday to Thursday, `1,199 for dinner on Fridays, Saturdays and for lunch on Sundays. Where Link Square Mall, Third Floor, Linking Road, Bandra (W) Contact 9022912367

Wasabi by MoriMoto Situated inside Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, if your wallet is big, we suggest that you look no further than Wasabi by Morimoto. While there, we tried three of their sushi offerings — Salmon (`710), Soft Shell Crab (`975) and Shrimp Tempura (`660). After eating them all, we couldn’t really come to a conclusion as to which one tasted better. If your palate is inclined towards Indian cuisine then the spicy varieties on the menu will be your best bet. They also have a wide range of vegetarian sushi with some uncommon ingredients used. The flavours in the sushi are well-balanced, not dry at all, which is a frequent complaint with this dish and you won’t be able to stop at just one. These are the guys who want to make Japanese food more accessible to the Indian palate. We know it’s not 100% authentic, but it’s really worth visiting. We think the “inspired” sushi is a perfect blend of traditional technique and modern flavours. And one of our favourite parts of the meal is that you can sit right at the sushi bar and watch the team roll the sushi. We recommend their California rolls (`425), Grilled Prawn Sushi (`350 with guacamole!) and the Raw cucumber & Philly cheese sushi (`325). All are well-made, each with a distinct taste and just the right size. They’ve also got a Lunch Tasting Menu which is valid from Monday to Friday, from 12 pm to 3.30 pm. For `700 (all inclusive), you can avail a choice of three starters, a special Chef’s Sushi selection, four main course options and Aoi’s signature chocolate sushi dessert! Where 1, Gloria, St. Baptist Road, Near Mount Mary Steps, Bandra (W) Contact 30932030

uMaMe The restaurant is well known amongst food connoisseurs and while most of it is your usual Pan Asian fare, they give sushi a delicate new twist with their tempura prawn based sushi. They call it Sun Set Boulevard and its part of their set menu, with asparagus and snow crab softly melting in your mouth when you bite into it. They do have a vegetarian avocado version that’s good, but we suggest sticking to the prawn and crab version. You’ll have to part with `1,500 for a set meal, per person. Where 1st Floor, East Wing, Eros Theater Building, Churchgate Contact 61110303

sKKy – raMada

KoFuKu Kofuku means “happiness” and based on their extensive sushi menu, you’re bound to find happiness here. To make the most of your meal at Kofuku, order the 18-piece sushi platter (`1,500) that includes tuna maki rolls and four types of nigiri: tuna, salmon, octopus and white pomfret. The tempura in wasabi-mayo was delicious and lightly crunchy, although the sushi rice was slightly dry. The Hamabagu (minced beef) was served with a delicious Japanese sauce and was moist, tender and full of flavour, with a lovely after-taste. While all the dishes here may not rock the boat, certain dishes are truly delicious such as the Philadelphia sushi and the Kakuni. Kofuku is slightly expensive if you want to eat your fill. Sushi plates were between `450-700 and mains were from `600-1,500. Where Kenilworth Shopping Arcade, 33rd Rd, Bandra (W) Contact 67105105

There are a lot of reasons we love visiting Skky and one of the biggest is their sushi bar. With a wide variety of sushi made right in front of you, this is the place to go to if you want delicious sushi that won’t burn a hole through your wallet. They have some great vegetarian options with pickled shitake and asparagus, but their fish varieties are a force to reckon with. We love the Norwegian salmon based Sake Nigiri sushi, the Maguro niri sushi made with yellow fin tuna, Tako Nigiri octopus sushi and the Ika nigiri sushi, made with Japanese cuttle fish. While individual sushi (non-vegetarian) costs `700 onwards, they’re all so good we can very rarely decide which one to pick. We suggest opting for their small and large assorted platters. We also love their tuna California rolls from their sashimi bar. The platters are priced at `2,950 (large) and `1,950.

Japanese Food season If you want to experience more than just sushi, check out the ongoing Japanese cuisine promotion that has been organised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in association with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Japanese Food Season — Oishii Japan, aims to promote and showcase Japanese cuisine. Oishii Japan has been going on for quite a few weeks and will end on November 10. Events range from cooking workshops, restaurant promotions, food retail promotions, recipe contests and food festivals. The festival will also include set menus at selected restaurants such as SanQi at The Four Seasons Hotel, India Jones at The Oberoi, Kofuku, Aoi in Bandra, Umame by Farrokh Khambata at The Eros Cinema Building and the Sushi & More Store at Warden Road, Mumbai. Prices for the restaurant season range from `1,000 to `3,500. Check out their website www.cooljapanfestival.com/oishii

« STORE REVIEWS: THE BIG DOOR & WARREN TRICOMI

A big welcome “I Madhurjya Saikia | HRM

Aptly named art, décor and jewellery store, The Big Door left Priyanka Singh bewitched. Here’s a look at the details of her visit

Where The Big Door, M Square, Plot No. 246, Dr. Ambedkar Road, Opp Dr. Ambedkar Statue, Khar (W) ContaCt 9820282836

>> The Big Door (below, left) impressed us with its royal collection. If you visit the store, don’t forget to have a look at their snake pots (above), a bed made of silver and a wall hanging made of silver garuda (below, centre and right)

have seen with my own eyes doors so massive/ that two men would have been required to push open just one of them./ Bronze, grating over stone sills, or made of wood/ from trees now nearly extinct.” The Big Door is nothing less poetic than the lines above, borrowed from the poem Big Doors by Richard Tillinghast, to describe how awestruck I felt as I stood gawking at its soaring entrance. While I didn’t get to find out how heavy the doors were, as they were opened for me by a burly doorman, I was giddy with excitement when I spotted double-door entrances and jharokhas, which reminded me of the Rajput and Mughal dynasties. By adjusting our gaze overseas, we often ignore the mammoth beauty that lies dormant in our country’s heritage. Vivek and Sunita Gupta, a couple who are aficionados of all things with a rich, Indian heritage, are trying to bring those gazes closer home through their palatial store for Indian jewellery, handcrafted home décor, art and collectibles. As tempted as we were to sprint to the first floor where the décor and art pieces lay, we halted to scrutinise their jewellery spread on the ground floor. The jewellery section is divided into equal parts of traditional and contemporary designs; the former variety is Mughal and Rajput inspired from Ravi Jewels of Jaipur. But, when I say contemporary, I mean the bucolic and tribal inspired pieces that are in style right now. Our favourites were the kadas, a gold south Indian tribal neck piece and an emerald and diamond encrusted (flat stones, à la Jodhaa’s ornaments in the movie Jodhaa Akbar) necklace among several other standout pieces. Starting range for the jewellery is `5,000 and goes up to `20 lakh. Moving over to the art and décor part, every piece at The Big Door has a standalone quality of its own — from the large silver doors manufactured in their factory, door frames and entrances sourced from palaces that are 150 years old, to even door knobs and mirrors. Their first floor is a celestial cove for those who love Indian-inspired artifacts. Their faux antique sculptures (‘faux’ as they are less than a century old) are as rustic as the original ones and their paintings and wall pieces employ the regal craftsmanship that belongs to royal India of the past. When you visit The Big Door, don’t forget to check out their door knobs, paintings, window mirrors, a golden parrot, snake pots and of course, the bed made of silver. Pricing starts at `5,000 and can soar up to `25 lakh. Nothing at The Big Door is understated. If your card’s limit is set at a high and you have a taste for Indian regality, then step into this store’s VIP section to discuss your establishment’s décor.

>> Warren Tricomi boasts of 4,000 square feet and our spa experience at this salon and spa was divine to say the least

Serenity calling Warren Tricomi is an impressive force in the world of salons and promises a luxurious, relaxing experience. Rhea Dhanbhoora checks out the new outlet at Shivaji Park to see whether it’s entered the city with style

O

kay, I’ll admit it. My day does get decidedly better when I have the opportunity to visit a spa or salon at the end of a harebrained week. But, there’s still always a little risk to be endured. What if it’s a dingy place? What if the treatment makes me breakout? Brushing away some horrendous past experiences, I couldn’t help but look forward to Warren Tricomi. After all, with 4,000 square feet dedicated to a salon, there has to be something good. Think old Bombay and you’ve got an idea of what the building the salon is located in looks like. Tucked away behind high walls and with a chandelier twinkling through the glass door, it’s embellished with high ceilings, subtle cream wallpapered walls and wooden furnishings. There’s even a café outside separated by stained glass. Everything is tastefully done and not too showy. While Warren Tricomi usually opens in hotels (The Leela), this one stands out because of a dedicated spa area with treatments by Forest Essentials, not to mention, better prices devoid of hotel tax. Once I’d made my way around the spa and salon, I settled in to try the Signature Serene (`2,500). It started off with a warm green tea, infused with heady hints of lemon and a honey. I was then whisked off into the spa room, with attached steam, bath, a closet and a little box to store your valuables. Everything was placed impeccably and every step of my treatment from start to finish was a slow, deliberate movement that added to the luxurious feel of my visit. Lying back in the armchair, my feet dipped in a basin with rose petals floating in warm water; I’m told that the Madurai Jasmine oil used for my full body massage will erase the stress of a hectic work week and soothe my nervous system. As far as massages go, it met my high expectations but did not exceed them. Pressure was firm but gentle, the oils were warm and soothing and my therapist was a doll. If it had been anything less, I would have been sorely disappointed. Their steam is better than in other salons because you can control time and ventilation. An indulgent shower later, I was ready to hit the sack, but unfortunately, I had to make my way back to the chaotic suburbs. But, when I finally turned in for the night, I had the most relaxing sleep I’ve ever had, making it all worth it. My skin also had a soft, well-rested glow all weekend. Warren Tricomi also has a special dry cut treatment, luxury manipedis and a host of other salon treatments, along with a Kerastase room. I hope I’ll be traipsing back to try them out soon. With no actual plates in sight, Rhea Dhanbhoora samples Asian food in little black trays to see how newly opened, quick service restaurant, Asia On My Plate in Lower Parel fares

Madhurjya Saikia | HRM

>> The décor at Asia On My Plate is interesting. Try the Somtam salad (inset) but give the Chinese burger called Kecap a miss (right)

ith no time for lunch and only a few minutes for a rushed dinner, working professionals in the city need something to suit their busy schedules. Enter quick service restaurants, a concept that Asia On My Plate is trying to wheedle into our lives. With a promise of no-fuss, quick and tasty food, you can imagine why our interest was piqued. Add to that, the promise of no chemicals, preservatives or MSG (a welcome relief from the usual Asian food we’re served) and we were looking forward to a meal at the Lower Parel outlet. The restaurant is small, with a slightly strange but altogether interesting décor. The predictable Asian red walls and signs contrast against the eclectic, westernised black and white chequered floor tiles that I quite liked. Service wise, you’ll be put at ease even on your worst work day. We entered in foul moods, stuck between firecrackers and chaotic festive Mumbai traffic, sweating because of the heat and coughing up smoke and dust courtesy the construction heavy roads. But, cheerful smiles, friendly greetings and warm suggestions await you inside. We ordered a dish from every section and settled in with high expectations. The Satay Ayam (`175) that arrived first in a black, plastic tray (food on-the-go indeed) was tasty, but the sauce had so much peanut that it was all I could taste. Putting a ‘k’ in popcorn may make the Popkorn Shrimp (`200) sound unique, but they’re just crispy, batter fried prawns. They were tasty, but if you’re not a fan of spicy food, you won’t be able to stomach the pepper. Next up was Somtam (`125). Our expectations had been uncomfortably lowered after all that peanut sauce and looking at the generous sprinkle of peanuts in the raw papaya salad did nothing to boost our enthusiasm. But, the tasty salad was a pleasant surprise. We then tried Kecap (`175), a Chinese burger with minced chicken mixed with garlic, ginger and soy in an oriental burger. Unfortunately, it was a miss. The Chinese flavours didn’t go well with the burger’s bun. Last on our list was the Asian Delight Combo (`229), a mixture of Chinese rice, an Indonesian yellow curry which was nothing special and a too-thick red Thai curry that may or may not have unsettled my tummy. In a nutshell, Asia On My Plate doesn’t have interesting food. Some dishes are the usual, Chinese fare. Others are too oily and some of the curries taste more like thick coconut gravy. With a good concept, quirky décor and great service, the only reason we won’t be picking up the phone for a delivery is because the food just didn’t do anything for our palate. If they improve on their lacklustre fare, this could be an interesting option for a quick lunch.

>> The new outlet is much bigger. You must try their super flaky, buttery and delicious cronuts (inset)

What a tart! Tart’s got a new menu, a new location and a new lady gracing their box. Glynda Alves tells you how it has become much more than just a cake shop…

F

or a reasonably priced sweet treat there are only a handful of places that really hit the spot. And Tart is one of them. That’s why we were more than excited when they opened a bigger outlet just off Linking Road in Bandra. Just like the new lady gracing their box and signage, the new outlet is more sophisticated than before. The space is beautifully done up with sleek interiors. We particularly loved the lights that look like macarons. The display shelf is twice as long as compared to the earlier store, with one section stocking just savoury items. On the facing wall, you’ll get to see all kinds of decorated cakes as well as a rack of packaged cake loaves and bread. We had to start off this food review with their newest offering — the savoury items. We ordered an Australian salad (`190) and a SriRacha + PButter Chicken (`180) sandwich. The salad was fresh and flavourful with a good helping of salty feta cheese and crunchy almonds. The sandwich was good too and we honestly didn’t expect the satay combination to work so well between bread. Next up, we tried some of their new desserts — The Coca Cola Cake (`75), Wicked Whiskey Cake (`70), Biscuit Cake (`70), Gulab Jamun Pie (`75) and a Krispie cupcake (`40). The Coca-Cola cake had the sweetness of a cola, but tasted pretty much like any chocolate cake. The Whiskey cake however, was a real treat with a subtle undertone of alcohol. We expected the Gulab Jamun pie to be messy but it was surprisingly easy to eat. Sadly, the rich juiciness of a gulab jamun seemed to have been baked out, which resulted in a slightly dry tart. The Biscuit cake was good; crisp and crumbly biscuit encased in rich chocolate. The Krispie Cupcake was honestly something a 4-year-old could make at home; just rice crispies stuck together with a bit of chocolate. But, what you must, must, must eat here is their cronut (`70)! Yes, Tart has mastered the dessert that has everyone drooling just at the idea of it. And it lives up to its reputation. The soft, flaky dough covered in sweet chocolate and oozing with a perfect custard filling is heavenly. Tart will also start selling Thai Curry, Khao Suey and other meals soon. They’ve also got a decent drinks menu (`80 onwards) that includes everything — from healthy ABC juice and Power Green (really what’s the point, you’re obviously not counting calories if you’ve walked in) to tea and different types of coffee. They’re also opening an outdoor seating area and that’s where I’ll be next week — eating cronut after delicious cronut. Uh-oh! THRILL & CHILL Everyone has two sides and we’ve found the place that caters to your mild and wild side. Glynda Alves tells you about Della Adventure & Resort in Lonavala

I

f you’re like us, you like a good mix on a weekend getaway. Anything too relaxing can get a bit boring and anything very hectic leaves you too exhausted to face the work week ahead. That’s why we think Della Adventure & Resorts is the perfect combination of lazy and crazy.

take a Walk on the Wild side For an adventure junkie, this is your promised land! These guys have everything from bungee jumping and rocket launching to mini-golf and archery. There are over 90 activities to choose from but we’ll tell you about the ones you absolutely can’t miss out on. The Rocket Launcher Ejector which catapults you four and a half floors high up into the air, is one such ride. After the initial feeling of your insides going haywire it’s sheer euphoria and a thrill you’re unlikely to ever forget. Next up was zorbing — who would think that rolling down a hill in a giant plastic ball would be so much fun. You can go in twos and it’s a laugh fest right through. There are other variants such as

Aqua Zorbing and Roller Zorbing which look like as much fun. We then decided to be brave and try the Flying Fox — a zip line that takes you across the expanse of the resort giving you an amazing bird’s eye view of Lonavala. We rode this at night and it was surreal. The ATV ride is also a lot of fun, even though it’s a bit of a challenge to maneuver the quad bikes at first. But, you can always take a marshal with you and fly through the mucky dirt course. Sadly, we didn’t get to try out the Bungee Jump or Swoop that day. But, we did get to watch someone take the plunge and they screamed out, “This is awesome!” We would have to agree.

Chill out After the all the adventure sports, opening the door to one of their luxury rooms is pure bliss! The resort rooms are nothing short of five-star. Done up in sleek gold, black and white with touches of vibrant red, I just wanted to dive into the plush bed and lay there. And while five-star bathrooms are always really posh, the bathroom

here, which was perhaps as big as the room itself, was one a notch above. It comes complete with an in-house Jacuzzi and even a TV! But the lavish rooms aren’t where it ends. Della has a spa that’s open 24-hours! The service here is on par with some of the higher end spas we’ve visited and each room is complete with a steam, shower and expertly hidden toilet. The entire resort is done up beautifully — it’s classy, elegant and very sleek. But, you can see Jimmy Mistry, the brains behind the project, has a good sense of humor because when you’re least expecting it, there’s something that’s a little whacked out waiting to surprise you. For example, the bathrooms are completely crazy! We don’t want to spoil the surprise; you should see it for yourself. However, despite their five-star status, the food at restaurants failed to impress us. Overall, Della Adventure & Resorts is a bit pricey when it comes to stay. A room will cost you on average `12,000 per night. But, the good part is that you can avail of the adventure activities as a standalone. So, make sure to take the plunge this weekend, you’ll love it!

When he is being transported to another facility, his colleagues dramatically help him escape via a helicopter. Now there is virtually no one who can stop Shahtaj and his men from carrying out terrorist attacks during Ganesh Visharjan day, when thousands of people converge near the beaches to immerse Bhagwan Shri Ganesh into the sea. Shortly thereafter, he is arrested by Police Inspector Hardev Singh Haryanvi and held for interrogation. CVO, 9 p.m.

Avoid Buying At Current Levels

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Friday (November 8, 2013) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell marginally on Thursday (November 07, 2013) a net 27.90 points (0.45%) and closed at the 6187 point level. The market opened up 6228 points level. It then turned into a range bound movement until 11.12 a.m. The index then rose sharply into the green and registered the day’s high at the 6288 points level at 12.00 p.m. It then declined and turned into a range bound movement until 2.24 p.m. The index then declined sharply into the red and registered the day’s low at the 6180 points level at 3.17 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty declined for the third consecutive session, moved in a range of 108 points and closed below the psychologically important 6200 points level. Sentiment turned bearish in the last hour of the session and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 32 were losers, while 18 stocks closed in the green. Some buying was seen in IT, metal and technology stocks, while substantial selling was witnessed in realty, consumer durables, banking and power stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 0.23%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was negative. Amongst all the traded stocks, 516 were gainers, 880 were losers and 53 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has declined in the neutral zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is below the slow D line (negative if it continues). RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 40 level but is now declining (negative if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero but is now declining (negative if it continues). It is below its 9-day Average (negative).

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line but both lines are converging (negative if it continues). The ADX is falling while the Market Index is falling, which indicates that the present down trend is decreasing in strength.

Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 6025 points level. The next support is at the 5921 points level.

Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance is at the 6357 points level. The next resistance is at the 6428 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intraday traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 6219 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 6149. Support (2) = 6111. Resistance (1) = 6257. Resistance (2) = 6327.

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a third consecutive black body candle. However, this black body candle has a long upper tail. A long upper tail indicates that the Bulls controlled part of the session but lost control by the end and the Bears made an impressive comeback. As such it indicates that the index was facing some selling pressure at higher levels. This candle also indicates indecisiveness amongst investors. Also, the index has dropped below the 15 days moving average. The index is now below the 5 and 15 days moving average. Further, the velocity parameters which were neutrally trended have now turned negative. All these indicate a negative bias and the possibility of a further decline unfolding. Investors are advised to avoid buying at current levels.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

MOVING AVERAGES (TREND INDICATORS) The index: Is below its 5-day average (at 6256) Negative. Has dropped below its 15-day average (at 6215) Negative. Is above its 25-day average (at 6130) Positive. Is above its 200-day average (at 5862) Positive. All the four averages are positively trended. Positive.

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a neutral market but with a negative bias.

Q2FY14 numbers of Sobha Developers (Sobha) are better than our expectations. Revenue rose 30.4% YoY to Rs5.4bn on the back of strong bookings from the contractual segment. EBITDA and PAT grew 11.5% and 13% YoY to Rs1.4bn and Rs566mn respectively. EBITDA margin declined slightly QoQ to 26.5% from 30.1% led by higher contribution from contractual segment revenue (from 25% in Q1 to 31% in Q2). We believe, on a full year basis, the operating margin could remain at ~30%, going forward. n the back of ~1.1mn sqft launches in Cochin and Bengaluru, the company registered strong sales of 1mn sqft valued at Rs6.3bn in Q2FY14 with realization remaining stable at Rs6,304/sqft. Sobha is well placed to achieve targeted sales on the back of new launch pipeline of ~12mn sqft, (sales guidance of 4.2mn sqft in FY14); however, we believe with macro economy turning weak, surpassing the targeted sales growth could be challenging. We maintain our sales volume assumption for FY14/15 at 3.84/4.4mn sqft and NAV at Rs390/share. We believe with new land being acquired on an opportunistic basis in the National Capital Region (NCR), the company would achieve a next leg-up on sales volume from FY15E. The contractual order book also remained stable at Rs7.3bn. We remain upbeat on Sobha given its impressive sales run-rate, visible earnings momentum, improving cashflow from operations and deployment of free cashflow towards growth. We maintain BUY on Sobha — our top pick in the sector. Visibility on cashflow: Sobha has 16.4mn sqft (54% sold) under development with receivables of Rs23.1bn on sold inventory and sales value of R60.5bn for unsold developments. Cumulative construction outflow stands at ~Rs49.6bn, translating into a net inflow of Rs35.2bn over the next three to four years. The contractual order book stands at Rs7.3bn. With collections averaging >Rs5bn (Rs6.3bn for Q2FY14) on a quarterly basis, we believe, the company will be well capitalised to explore incremental growth opportunities. Attractive valuations: We remain upbeat on Sobha given its impressive sales run-rate, visible earnings momentum, improving cashflow from operations and deployment of free cashflow towards growth. The stock trades at FY14E P/E and P/BV of 11.8x and 1.3x respectively. Sobha is our top pick in the sector.

Religare calls a ‘Buy’ on Kajaria Ceramics CMP: Rs. 235 Target Rs. 285

KJC’s Q2 topline grew by a strong 23% YoY led by a 22% volume growth. However, EBITDA margins slid ~170bps YoY to 13.7% on higher power costs. This along with higher taxes led to flattish profit growth (PAT up 1.4% YoY Rs 269mn). We slightly pare our FY14/FY15 earnings by 7%/5% on lower margins/equity dilution, and roll over to a Dec’14 TP of Rs 285 (vs. a Mar’14 TP of Rs 270). However, we maintain BUY as capacity expansion at KJC’s own/JV units would continue to drive its revenues and earnings. Strong revenue growth: KJC reported strong revenue growth of 23% in Q2FY14, marginally ahead of estimates, led by a robust 22% growth in volumes – the highest in five quarters even as the blended realisation growth remained largely flat YoY. Capacity expansion plans continued to be laid out, with the company announcing an additional capacity of 4.5msm/annum of double-charged vitrified tiles at the Jaxx unit and 3.0MSM/annum of soluble salt vitrified tiles at the Cosa unit. Higher fuel costs hurt margins: Q2FY14 EBITDA grew by 10% YoY to Rs 656mn with margins contracting ~170bps YoY to 13.7% led by higher power & fuel costs, thanks to the sharp INR depreciation. This coupled with a higher tax rate (34.3% vs. 31.5% in Q2) hit profit growth (PAT up by a mere 1.4% YoY to Rs 269mn). The company has also announced a fresh equity issuance of 2mn shares at Rs 250 and 3.9mn convertible warrants at Rs 257.37 (total capital raising of Rs 1.5bn). Capacity expansion to drive earnings; maintain BUY: We remain positive on KJC due to its strong brand equity, stringent working capital management and solid return ratios. While the margin dip was largely expected on higher fuel costs/a weak INR, capacity expansion at its own manufacturing (modernisation of the Sikandrabad facility)/JV units (Jaxx/Cosa/Vennar) and product mix diversification should drive revenues and earnings growth. We cut FY14/FY15 earnings by 7%/5% to account for lower margins/equity dilution. Maintain BUY with a Dec’14 of Rs 285. THE KING OF COMEDY

BOLLYWOOD

Ace comedian Johnny Walker’s birthday is on November 11. Here’s a look at his journey in Bollywood.

By Suneel V. Gaur and Rajesh V. Gaur

J

ohnny Walker cast a magic spell among the masses with his simple, innocent and unadulterated humor, providing comic relief in tense situations in the movies of the 50s and 60s. Badruddin Kazi aka Johnny Walker started his career as a bus conductor in BEST buses of Mumbai. He regaled passengers with his antics, and fortune smiled upon him one day when he had actor Balraj Sahani as his passenger. Balraj was scripting dialogues for the film ‘Baazi’ whose director was Guru Dutt. Inspired by Johnny’s antics Balraj took him to Guru Dutt and asked him to introduce himself. Johnny hit upon a brain wave and entered Guru Dutt’s cabin with the unsteady gait of a drunk, mouthing profanities. An irate Guru Dutt called up people from the unit to throw Johnny out but Balraj intervened, and the rest is history. After this incident, Guru

Johnny Walker and writer, Vrajendra Gaur, on the sets of Baat Ek Raat Ki (1961) Dutt rechristened Badruddin Kazi as JohnnyWalker after the famous Scotch brand as he was very impressed with his portrayal of a drunk. Thus Johnny Walker became an integral part of many Guru Dutt movies like ‘Aar Paar’, ‘Mr and Mrs 55’, ‘CID’,

‘Pyaasa’, ‘Kagaz Ki Phool’, ‘Chaudvin Ka Chand’, ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Gulam’ and others. His impeccable diction combined with his wonderful performances created a mesmerizing combination which the audience lapped up in excitement. His excellent

sense of comic timing in delivering dialogues helped him give stellar performances resulting in renowned film-makers seeking him out and specially writing characters for him. C.I.D’s ‘Yeh Hai Bombay Meri Jaan’ is still an anthem for Mumbaikars and who could forget the timeless ‘Sar Jo Tera Chakraye’ in Guru Dutt’s classic Pyaasa? His squeaky voice, wafer-thin moustache and brilliant wit added a different dimension to his personality. After a long successful innings, Johnny took a break from Bollywood, but pleasantly surprised his fans when he returned to one last time in ‘Chachi 420’ (1997). In a place like Bollywood, where morality is buried and the power of money overrides principles and ideals, people like Johnny Walker have stood like rocks. They made people laugh but ensured that never made themselves a laughing stock.

‘The Good Road is a metaphor for life’ says Ajay Gehi who’s film, ‘The Good Road,’ which is India’s entry to the Oscars, is about to be released. Sandeep Hattangadi spoke to Ajay about his much lauded film and this is what he has to say.

What do you have to say about the Oscar nomination category controversy? I don’t think there is any controversy. We should be happy that we have so many good films being made, that we are spoilt for choice. We all are in the same boat trying to make good cinema and to make a mark in the international market.

What is your character in the film and what is the film all about? I play a character called David who is a photographer by profession and a loving father and husband. He doesn’t get bogged down by obstacles or hardships that life has to offer. However, he is not very successful in his career so he cannot afford the luxury of buying air tickets for his family and decides to take a road trip. “The Good Road “ essentially is a metaphor for life itself. Life is a journey where we sometimes lose a few things and discover or rediscover others before we reach

ctor Vivek Oberoi, who played the sinister Kaal in Rakesh Roshan‘s last film ‘Krrish 3’, is being appreciated for his look and performance in the film. In fact the actor recently revealed that his wife Priyanka almost fell down in shock on seeing him in the Kaal get-up. In an interview, the actor revealed that one day after pack-up he came home without changing his onscreen look and startled his wife Priyanka, who almost collapsed on

seeing his Kaal look. It seems that his wife could not believe that her husband could look so evil and hence, was startled by his menacing look.

S

uperstar Shah Rukh Khan feels he desperately needs a break despite having loads of film offers in hand. Shah Rukh, who is currently shooting ‘Happy New Year’, is flooded with film offers from directors like Maneesh Sharma of ‘Shuddh Desi Romance’, Rahul Dholakia, Anurag Kashyap, R Balki, Ashutosh Gowarikar and others. “Not yet doing Maneesh Sharma’s film. When I do the film I will let you all know. I haven’t started anything new. I am going to work on ‘Happy

New Year’ for the next two months. There are two-four film offers. Whenever the film gets designed, I will decide accordingly,” Shah Rukh said. “I will take a holiday after I finish ‘Happy New Year’, as I did not take it last time after completing ‘Chennai Express’. I will take a month off and then start a new film. There is Maneesh Sharma’s film on top, Rahul Dholakia’s movie and few other offers on which I will take a call,” he added. Incidentally, Zee TV has reportedly coughed up Rs. 50

crore for acquiring the satellite rights of the highest revenue grosser of the year ‘ChennaiExpress’, which brought the channel a good rating. “There was a lot of responsibility. They took the film at a high price, and not at what the rumours say. It was an expensive film. We don’t understand how it performs on TV but the team of Zee TV said they were happy and may be because of the film they are number one now,” Shah Rukh said.

our destination. The road trip taken by the characters makes them discover a few things which they never had.

You have produced ‘Madholal Keep Walking’. What was it like? Do you plan to produce more films? I became a producer by default. My friend had made the film and I loved it, so when he was facing problems I stepped in. Producing got me exposed to a whole lot of aspects of film making which you don’t know of as an actor. I understand the business of film making much better after that experience and can see things in a different perspective. I might produce more films later.

Which are the directors you would like to work with? In recent times we have seen such diverse and good cinema that the list of directors I would like to work with is endless. But I would love to do another film with Mr. Gyan again.

he unstoppable rhetorician Shatrughan Sinha addressed the UN General Assembly for third time on Tuesday. It is a singular honour. No other member of the Indian film industry has addressed the UN thrice over. “I suppose somewhere my words do have a certain resonance”, says Shatruji trying to sound modest. “Normally we in the Indian film fraternity are considered quite ill-informed on matters other than entertainment. But that isn’t the reality. Personalities like Amitabh Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Kamal Haasan are not just interested in cinema. They take a keen interest in world affairs, and are also terrific orators”. Shatrughan Sinha feels the Big B should be made the President of India. “He has all the qualifications. He’s articulate, well-read, suave and known all over the world”. Shatrughan Sinha says his differences with the Big B are a thing of the past. “We go back a long way. There were creative conflicts when we shot together for ‘Kala Patthar’ and ‘Dostana’. And the differences have been washed away with time. I remember while shooting for ‘Bombay To Goa’ where Amitabh was the hero for the first time and I was the villain, he accidentally hit my nose and it started bleeding. Amitabh got so disturbed at the sight of blood that I forgot my pain and started consoling and reassuring him. He’s a fine human being”.

A scene from the 1972 Hollywood movie The Godfather

A

s Satya 2 gets ready for a troubled release, thoughts go back to Ram Gopal Varma’s1998 film Satya, a film that is now a cult in the gangster genre. It wasn’t the first gangster film, not even the first realistic one, but the history of crime in Hindi cinema can be divided into pre and post Satya. Varma went deep into Mumbai’s underworld, and was so enamoured of it, that he never emerged. His Factory produced any number of gangster films, none as impactful as Satya. After a chequered film career with more lows than highs, it was inevitable that a Satya 2 would emerge. But does Bollywood need another gangster film—now that the genre has not just been appropriated by other filmmakers, but well nigh done to death. And where did it all start, this fascination for the Mafia, or organised crime? With The Godfather (1972), Francis Ford Coppola’s film that started off a veritable industry in crime films. There is a startling piece of information about The Godfather in a piece titled The Mob, The Movies and Me by Peter Bart in which he writes, that the director, Francis Ford

Coppola was “totally ignorant of Mobdom”, and that writer Mario Puzo wrote a book on a subject he knew nothing about. (Bart was on the production team of the film.) Don Corleone and The Family came out of their imagination, yet they created

RINGSIDE VIEW Deepa Gahlot such a powerful piece of cinema, that The Godfather became the standard Mafia Movie for everyone to follow. In all probability real life gangsters started dressing, talking and behaving like the characters in the movie. If art imitates life, life has curious ways of returning the compliment. Above all, the Honorable Don movie lent glamour and respectability to the mobster. It was like, hey, these guys are not bad, they are family folk,

‘Krrish 3’ crosses Rs.150 crore mark

H

rithik Roshan‘s latest release Krrish 3 has created a storm at the box-office and now, the superhero flick has entered the Rs.150-crore club. The movie, which released in 4000 screens across India, on November 1, raked in a whopping sum of Rs.152.98 crore at the box-

office in just six days. The film grossed Rs.25.5 crore on its opening day and also set the record for the highest single day collection, by earning Rs.35.91 crore on November 4. Now the Rakesh Roshan directed film has also left behind India’s biggest blockbuster ‘Chennai Express’ with its six days’ collection. While ‘Chennai Express’ collected a total of Rs.137.10 crore, six days after its release, ‘Krrish 3’ collected Rs.152.98 crore on day six of its release. The way the third edition of the Krrish franchise is keeping the cash register ringing, it is expected that it will soon enter the super elite Rs.200-crore club.

loyal friends and brave killers. Just like you and me, if we had the nerve or inclination to kill people for a living—a good living too. Which is what Ram Gopal Varma’s trendsetting Satya said too, and later many films by other filmmakers. From being the hated villain, the gangster become a Hero. According to a crime site, “Where does the fascination (for evil) spring from? Perhaps it’s due to the fact that identifying with criminals has a cathartic function, allowing us to vicariously live through the crimes of others so that we don’t feel compelled to engage in them ourselves…We like crime movies because they show us an underside to our society that we don’t get to see too often, and these people kick some ass.” Interesting to note then, that a gangster on being asked his reaction to the Godfather movies, said they sent them “gloriously floating out of theatres.”

Kareena’s nod to Saif ’s intimate scenes R

ecently, Kareena Kapoor Khan, who is married to Saif Ali Khan, had remarked that she has no issues with intimate scenes in a film post marriage, provided the script requires it and now, Bebo has dropped another bombshell. In an interview, Kareena said that as Saif is an actor, he should get intimate and romantic with his actresses as and when the script requires it and that she doesn’t feel insecure at all about this as acting is their profession and she keeps her personal life separate from her professional life. Saif and Kareena had starred opposite each other in ‘Tashan’.

‘Working hard to be a great dancer’ A

ctress Deepika Padukone, who will play an out-of-work bar dancer in ‘Happy New Year’, says she is working hard to be a great dancer in the film. “Farah had a list of DOs for the actress. I will prepare for it like any other film. If I am required to be a great dancer in the film, I will have to work damn hard. She wants a girl who is Maharashtrian, a good dancer and a specific look. Manish Malhotra

is doing my clothes, my hair stylist is there, I hope it turns out well”, Deepika said. Deepika has just completed one schedule of the Farah Khan directed film and will shoot the rest in April. Her character in the film influences the lives of her co-stars – Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Vivaan Shah and Boman Irani – as all of them are dancers and Deepika will help them win a dance trophy. Deepika is riding high on the success of her last three releases - ‘Race 2’, ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ and

‘Chennai Express’. Her last release ‘Chennai Express’ was aired on Zee TV last month and it managed to grab maximum eyeballs, leading Zee TV to be the number one channel. “Record after record in our kitty, I am very happy. It is a great feeling. Whether we like it or not, it (film) did get lot of love and appreciation. Forget it on TV, people even went to see the film again in theatres. It is that kind of the film that has repeat value. It is a wholesome entertainer. When you make the film from heart, I think this can be the end result (records)”, she said.

OLKATA: Rohit Sharma stamped his class by hitting a sparkling century on debut as India recovered from a top-order collapse to take a firm grip of the first Test against the West Indies with a 120-run first-innings lead here. Sharma stole the thunder with his unbeaten 127 as the hosts, who were precariously placed at 83 for five at one stage, reached a comfortable 354 for six at close on an eventful second day's play. Ravichandran Ashwin was the other batting hero of the day as he remained unbeaten on 92 as he combined with Sharma to pull India out of trouble. Sharma became the 14th Indian to score a century on debut. With retiring legend Sachin Tendulkar being given out in a contentious manner in his penultimate match, the in-form Sharma along with Ashwin added 198 runs for the seventh wicket to almost bat the visiting side out of the match on a tricky Eden Gardens strip. Handed the Test cap by Tendulkar after his Man-of-the Series performance in the recently-concluded ODI series against Australia, Sharma struck 16 fours and one six while facing 228 balls. The 26-year-old Mumbai righthander was playing in his maiden Test three years and nine months after playing his first ODI. Ashwin played the perfect foil as the offspinner made invaluable runs in their match-turning partnership that helped India get past the West Indies first innings score of 234. On a pitch that has started to crumble, the match is tilted in favour of India, who will be looking to seal the issue without needing to play on the final day. For the elegant Mumbai batsman, who was assured of a Test debut on the morning of February 6, 2010 against South Africa before a freak collision with Wriddhiman Saha dashed his hopes, it was perseverance that paid off. Having come after the unlucky dismissal of Tendulkar, Sharma showed amazing resilience. As wickets started to tumble with Shane Shillingford (4/130) reducing the hosts to 83/5 in the first session, it was left to Sharma and Ashwin to do the recovery act. Sharma got to the century in style, gliding one past between first slip and gully. And, the ones bowled by Sheldon Cottrell, just before and immediately after

RO(HIT) SHOW

Rohit scores an unbeaten 127 on debut as India take big lead after early collapse “This is where I made my first class (Ranji) debut for Mumbai as well when I started off. If you've noticed, we have won the IPL final here (earlier this year). Also, this was the place where I was given the Mumbai Indians captaincy for the first time. The Eden is really special to me. I really love playing here. I got decent amounts of runs here while playing for Mumbai. I hope it turns out to be better tomorrow.” — ROHIT SHARMA

the batsman got to the three-figure mark, were also spanked for fours on either side of the turf. Sharma, who had amassed 491 runs including a double hundred at an average of 122.75 in the Australia ODI series, remained composed as he initially rebuilt the innings with Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (42). Barring Tendulkar, who

got out to a dubious lbw decision by English umpire Nigel Llong, the Indian batsmen Shikhar Dhawan (23), Murali Vijay (26), Cheteshwar Pujara (17) and Virat Kohli (3) were lacking in temperament. But Sharma showed temperament and excellent technique, and lived up to the challenge. Dhawan (187) was the last Indian to score a

century on debut against Australia in March. Sharma walked out to the centre in the middle of an intense first session's play when the Eden crowd's emotions were punctured with the dismissal of Tendulkar after a 41minute outing. Getting into the groove with two boundaries off Shillingford, Ten-

dulkar would be cursing his luck for being given out to a doosra that seemed to be going over the stumps. The ball did all the talking for Shillingford as WI had the hosts tottering at 120/5 at lunch. BRIEF SCORES: West Indies 234 trail India 354/6 in 102 overs [Rohit Sharma 127 batting, R. Ashwin 92 batting, Shane Shillingford 4/130] by 120 runs.

It’s my job to appeal, says Shane Shillingford K

OLKATA: Even as a pall of gloom descended on the Eden Gardens after retiring legend Sachin Tendulkar became victim of a dubious decision in the first Test here, West Indies spinner Shane Shillingford said his "job was to appeal". Off-spinner Shillingford returned figures of 4/130 on day 2 and one of his wickets included Tendulkar. It turned out to be a controversial dismissal as TV replays suggested that the ball was climbing and would have missed the stump. Asked whether he was happy with the way Tendulkar was dismissed, Shillingford said: "That's a funny question... In terms of, at the spur of the moment, it's every bowler's reaction to appeal one time. But when I got in and I had seen it and stuff...

At the end of the day, the umpire made his decision. It's my job to appeal, so these things happen in the game." But Shillingford said they're still hopeful as the wicket had "eased out" even though Rohit Sharma and R Ashwin were unbeaten. "The match is still wide open. It's only the second day, tomorrow is a very important day for us. We have to come out and stick to our plans and be patient. When we get them out, it will depend on how we will bat and stuff. Definitely (the wicket had eased out...) After lunch it really slowed down a bit. That's when you had to be a little more tighter as opposed to more attacking. The batsmen, they were really patient as well and put away the bad balls."

Run machine Mike Hussey is Sharma’s Test hero

By Tapan Mohanta

K

OLKATA: Making his Test debut after playing in 108 ODIs over the last 45 months, ton-up Indian batsman Rohit Sharma said his source of inspiration has been former Australian run-machine Mike Hussey, who had played his first game in the five-day format aged 30. Sharma stamped his class by hitting an unbeaten 127 on debut as India recovered from a toporder collapse to take a firm grip of the first Test against the West Indies with a 120-run first-innings lead at the Eden Gardens. "Being a sportsman, there are a lot of inspiration to take from so many sportsmen around the world. You got to look at Michael Hussey... He made his debut at 30. There are a lot of other cricketers who waited for their opportunity... So I'm no different," Sharma told reporters. "I am one of them. I know once I get an opportunity I would try and make the most out of it. I never wanted to put my head down. I always believed if you got the talent and ability, there's no need to worry about anything," Sharma added after his sparkling knock on the second day. The Mumbaikar said he knew his time in Test cricket would come. "I know there was a phase when things were not going my way. But I never put my head

MIG Club to name pavilion after Tendulkar

A painting of Sachin Tendulkar at the entrance of the MIG cricket club in Bandra.

MUMBAI: The MIG Cricket Club in suburban Bandra will pay a tribute to retiring batting great Sachin Tendulkar by naming the pavilion, including the dressing room, after him. "We have decided to name the pavilion as Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar Pavilion. We spoke to him around six to eight months back and he acknowledged it," MIG Cricket Club secretary Ashish Patankar said. Tendulkar, who is set to retire after the November 14-18 India-West Indies second Test which would also mark his 200th game, had practiced often at this ground during his formative years.

Kept working on my assured of making his Test debut

against South Africa in Nagpur, but he twisted his ankle in a freak mishap with Wriddhiman Saha, giving the opportunity to the Bengal wicketkeeper. "I was a bit disappointed about what happened in 2010. I just wanted to have all my focus on this Test. Finally, it came. Whether it came after three years does not matter. Asked whether he's in the form of his life, he said: "I really don't know. Whenever it happens you got to be proud, you got to take that." "A Test match hundred is always special. I'm happy to score on debut. I was waiting for an opportunity for a long time. I was thinking to bat well and did not think much about scoring hundred. I just wanted to continue my ODI form," Sharma said. He said the third day is going to be crucial for the hosts. "With this magnificent day today, I'm happier. We got a game in our hand, we just need to be focussed. Tomorrow it's going to be a more crucial day. If we can play till about lunch, or few overs after lunch and we can get good lead there, try and put them under pressure. "I just wanted to continue from where I left in Bangalore. If you're in good form, you got to take the responsibility to carry it forward," he added. He refused to compare his ODI double ton in Bangalore with the debut century here.

Jaffer’s unbeaten 92 steers Mumbai against Punjab

RAO HITS TON FOR GUJ, NARWAL TAKES FIVE-FOR SURAT: Y Venugopal Rao struck a fine century as Gujarat posted 281 for seven in their Ranji Trophy Group A match against Delhi, whose star performer was medium pacer Sumit Narwal, who picked up five wickets. At stumps on the opening day, Akshar Patel and Rakesh Dhurv were batting on 22 and two, respectively. Venugopal Rao found the fence 13 times and cleared it once during his 190ball knock.

C

HANDIGARH: Wasim Jaffer's unbeaten 92 helped Mumbai reach 207 in their first innings but not before Punjab had snapped up five wickets to share the honours on the opening day of their second Group A Ranji Trophy match here. Electing to bat after their captain Zaheer Khan won the toss, Mumbai were reduced to 85 for four but Jaffer held one end to steer the visiting team to 207 for five. Jaffer's 175-ball knock was studded with 11 fours and a six. Another notable contributor to the team's cause was Suryakumar Yadav, who struck 44 off 82 deliveries. Yadav put together 102 runs for the fifth wicket with Jaffer before falling to all-rounder Yuvraj Singh. For Punjab, Siddharth Kaul was the top wicket-taker, bagging 2/40 in 15 overs. Yuvraj and discarded Test off-spinner Harbhajan Singh picked up one wicket apiece. It was not the best of starts by Mumbai as they lost their first wicket in the form of opener and wicketkeeper Aditya Tare (11) with just 17 runs on the board. His partner Kaustubh Pawar (24) hung around a little longer but it was just not enough to rescue Mumbai. The fall of two quick wickets after his dismissal raised fears of a collapse but Jaffer and Yadav rebuilt the innings. Punjab bowlers kept it tight and

did not allow Mumbai batsmen to break the shackles after putting them under pressure with early dismissals. Yadav's knock, which included seven fours, was in fact quite lively compared to the overall pace of run-gathering by his teammates. He was dismissed just a little more than five overs before end of play. At stumps, Hiken Shah (9) was giving company to Jaffer as Mumbai partially recovered from the morning collapse. Brief Scores: Mumbai 1st innings: 207/5 in 71 overs (Wasim Jaffer 92 batting, Suryakumar Yadav 44, Siddharth Kaul 2/40) vs Punjab.

SUNNY'S TON LIFTS HARYANA TO 235/4 AGAINST VIDARBHA NAGPUR: Sunny Singh slammed a fine unbeaten century to help Haryana score 235 runs for the loss of four wickets against Vidarbha at the end of opening day's play in a Ranji Trophy Group A match. At stumps, Sunny was unbeaten on 101 off 201 balls with the help of 11 boundaries and one six and giving him company was Jayant Yadav on 13. SAXENA HITS UNBEATEN TON AS RAJASTHAN SCORE 222/6 JAIPUR: Opener Vineet Saxena remained unbeaten on 110 to guide hosts Rajasthan to 222 for the loss of six wickets at stumps on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy Group B match against Bengal. Saxena found the fence 14 times during his knock.

IN BRIEF Youngster Marc Marquez within touching distance of title

MADRID: Marc Marquez is aiming to become the youngest ever MotoGP world champion at the age of 20 as the Spaniard takes a 13point lead over compatriot and defending champion Jorge Lorenzo into the season's final Grand Prix in Valencia this weekend. Marquez has seen his lead whittled down by a late season charge by Lorenzo, but will seal the title in his maiden year in MotoGP should be finish fourth or better at the Ricardo Tormo circuit. The Honda Repsol rider remains very much the favourite for the championship having only failed to make the podium once this year, when he was disqualified for failing to pit in time for a mandatory change of tyres in Australia last month. "I am desperate to get back on the bike," he told Spanish sports daily Marca.

MESSI’S BRACE TAKES BARCA TO FINAL 16 B

ARCELONA: Barcelona sealed their place in the Champions League last 16 with two games to spare as Lionel Messi scored twice in their 3-1 win over AC Milan at the Camp Nou on Wednesday. Messi ended his three-game run without a goal as he smashed home the opener from the penalty spot after Neymar had been felled by Ignazio Abate. Sergio Busquets then headed home a second, but Milan were handed a lifeline just before half-time when Gerard Pique turned Kaka's cross into his own net. However, Messi made the game safe seven minutes from the end when he dinked the ball home

Anand promises attacking game

C

HENNAI: As a stern test awaited his quest for a sixth title, Indian chess wizard Viswanathan Anand was a picture of confidence and he promised an attacking game against Magnus Carlsen of Norway in the much-awaited World Championship match that begins here on Saturday. Anand, the undisputed world champion since 2007, faces a strong challenge from the 22-yearold Norwegian sensation Carslen in one of the most awaited World Chess Championship matches in recent history. Asked how well he has prepared for the event, Anand said, "I worked as I always did. Couple of months of training and I think I am ready to attack. We will see how it goes but I think I am ready to play." "I am really excited to play in my home city. I am looking forward to the match starting and getting on to that," he said after the inauguration of the event by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

from Cesc Fabregas' pass. Defeat still leaves Milan in second place in Group H, a point ahead of Ajax and two clear of Celtic after the Dutch champions beat the Scottish side 1-0 in the night's other match. An eighth meeting between the sides in just the past three seasons meant there was a more subdued atmosphere than would normally be expected for a meeting between two of Europe's heavyweights. However, Barca boss Gerardo Martino showed how intent he was on sewing up qualification as he named his strongest available side with the fit-again Adriano restored at leftback.

Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri, meanwhile, sprang a surprise by leaving Mario Balotelli on the bench with the former Real Madrid duo of Robinho and Kaka starting instead in attack. Both Brazilians were largely isolated in the first half though as Barcelona controlled proceedings. Xavi Hernandez pulled an early free-kick just wide before Neymar ought to have scored when played in by Messi, but he took a heavy touch and allowed Christian Abbiati to smother. Milan's defensive resistence was finally undone on the half-hour mark by a moment of madness from Abate as he pulled back Neymar inside the area and Messi con-

verted from the spot for his fifth Champions League goal of the campaign. Riccardo Montolivo then had Milan's first effort on goal 10 minutes before the break with an angled drive that flew just past. Messi could have had his second as he wriggled into some space inside the area and dinked the ball over Abbiati, but Philippe Mexes got back to clear the ball to safety. Barca did double their advantage six minutes before half-time though when Xavi's free-kick was easily headed home by the unmarked Busquets. Adriano forced Abbiati into a finger-tip save moments later.

Anand shows his cards; Carlsen refuses By Vishal Sareen

C

HENNAI: Hungarian Grandmaster Peter Leko was the surprise inclusion in defending champion Viswanathan Anand's team even as his Norwegian challenger Magnus Carlsen kept his cards close to his chest ahead of their much-anticipated World Championship match starting on Saturday. Krishnan Sasikiran and Sandipan Chanda were the two Indians in the team of five-time world champion apart from his regular 'second' Radoslav Wojtaszek of Poland. Sasikiran was an expected inclusion and Chanda's name had also been finalised long back. Surprisingly, Carlsen refused to comment on his team for the championship. "I appreciate Mr. Anand's openness about his team. Alas! I am not going to return the favour," Carlsen said. Leko's inclusion could be the masterstroke that Anand is known for. It may be recalled that Anand had former FIDE world champion
