Pakya was wanted for firing two rounds at Ajay Ghosalia aka Ajay Borivali aka Ajay Ganda in 2013. Pakya had been identified as the main shooter among the three who attempted to kill Ganda by firing bullets outside Infinity Mall, Malad, on August 28. 2012. Ganda suffered two bullet injuries but survived. Considered a big fish in the city's gangwaters, Pakya was arrested at Diva by Crime Branch Unit 11. “Pakya's arrest is a major blow to the Rajan gang especially to Satish Kalya, who assumed a key position in the gang after eliminating veteran journalist Jyotirmoy Dey in 2011,” said Avinash Sawant, Senior Inspector of Unit 11. Captain Friel back in action
nspector Avinash Sawant has been fondly tagged Captain Friel by the men who worked alongside him, tackling the city's underworld at its prime in the 90's and early 2000's. Frank Friel, the eponymous officer of Philadelphia's police department is known for eliminating the entire Philadelphia-Atlantic mafia family in 1980. Sawant's role in gunning down most of the dreaded city gangsters in separate encounters earned him the name. He has an impressive record of working with almost every high-ranking encounter specialist in the city's police force. However, the modest Sawant prefers to remain low-profile but proudly credits his hand-picked officers who had been a part of the operations. Prominent among his Avinash Sawant many encounters are Ramya Surve alias Ramya Butler and his two associates who were targeting a builder at Malad. CITY OPINIONS
Is it possible for BJP to come to power in Maharashtra?
Darshan Panchal Engineer No. In the state, Congress-NCP alliance has done well in past 10 years and has also kept law and order under control. Nidhi Jasani Doctor Maybe. It can be possible but still it's a tough fight as the Congress-NCP has done quite a tremendous work in terms of development.
Shivraj Nevrekar Cinematographer Yes. A decade has passed but the current ruling party has not done anything for the development of the state. It has just taken the credits for the projects which were initiated when BJP-Sena alliance was in power in state. Amol Kale Hotel Owner Yes. The current ruling party has lot of corruption issues which would be a major factor considered by the voters during voting. Shivshankar Dey MBA Student No. There would be damage to the current ruling party but it would surely not lose the elections. Shamsher K. Service Yes. This time around, the people of Maharashtra are angry with the Congress due to the hike in prices of food, fuel and other items. So the BJP has an edge over the Congress. So BJP win, especially considering the downward spiral of the Shiv Sena. Munna Hakke Student The opinion polls says that the BJP will get maximum seats in Maharashtra. I think the BJP will get 15 seats in the state due to various factors working in favour of the BJP this time. ‘e-teach’ is a commendable initiative to teach English in vernacular schools. And it’s fast catching on, with 1,200 schools already using the technology to make learning of the language easy By Avinash Lohana
T
he world is going global today and English as a language has played a pivotal role in building bridges between nations. However, there is a certain strata of society which is deprived of this learning and struggle to compete in the rat race. To reduce this shortcoming, the Bombay Community Public Trust (BCPT) along with three other partners, viz. Learning Space Foundation (LSF), Tata Interactive Systems (TIS) and Muktangan have embarked on an initiative to provide education to those who are deprived of learning English, with a program called 'e-teach.' This program was initiated with various objectives, one being to reduce the disparity faced by children from the poor strata due to their inability to communicate in English, then to improve the utilisation of the vast infrastructure and teaching staff which exists in vernacular schools and to teach the students of Balwadi and 1st Std through simple technology which makes the subject fun and easy to understand. The method adopted to achieve these objectives was to prepare and display master audio-visual animated action-packed DVDs made by TIS to teach the compulsory syllabus prescribed by the Maharashtra Government for English. These DVDs are distributed free of cost to vernacular schools which cater to those children who cannot afford to learn English in good schools and hence suffer the brunt. Harsha Parekh, Executive Trustee of BCPT said, “E teach was the idea of H.T. Parekh, Founder of BCPT. He realised that there is a need for improving English, mostly so that the kids from vernacular medium could survive in the real world, as also because there were a lot of
Chemists are concerned about their own safety and of the patients' welfare if they refuse to dispense medicines against prescriptions that are not as per the model format; suggest convincing doctors to comply instead By Shwetha Kannan
T
he Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) stand asking retailers to stop giving medicines over prescriptions that do not follow the model format, has raised some questions and received some recommendations from the retailer fraternity. Though the retailers are yet to be officially informed about this, they have concerns about their security and patients' welfare. Prasad Danave, General Secretary, Retail Dispensing Chemists' Association (RDCA) said, “If the
An e-teach class in session. dropouts from vernacular schools, not because the teaching was bad, but English was not given much priority. Even parents wanted their kids to learn proper English and hence were shifting their kids to English medium schools.” However, there were repercussions to this as well. Parekh further added, “English medium schools are costly, hence they had to then face financial hardships to get admissions there.” So every party involved analysed this concern and came out with a solution. To teach English in the same vernacular and Marathi medium schools, but with some technological assistance. They came out with an idea of converting the entire English text book into a DVD with music, pictures and animation that would attract kids and
gauge their attention towards the subject. Nitin Orayan, Founder of LSF said, “We were always clear about one thing that if we want this initiative to be a success we have to stick to the syllabus, because as per the university norms, students have to be taught the syllabus prescribed by the Maharashtra Government. However, we did not want this DVD to be boring, so we included, animation, pictures and music to generate interest amongst children. We sat with the members of TIS, who converted the entire English textbook into a user friendly interactive DVD.” However, the journey wasn’t simple and there were many hurdles that the team had to overcome for this initiative to function successfully. “Initial difficulties was the cost of the DVD s which is high. Just
when we managed to overcome that, the syllabus changed. So we had to redo the entire process. Moreover, the schools were hesitant in the beginning and refused to take full responsibility of the teaching. So we had to provide a helping hand for quite some time to make them comfortable with this new change,” said Parekh. In the academic year 2011-12 they did a test run in one taluka in Thane district with very encouraging results. So in 2012-13, they convinced 200 schools to partner them in the cause. Gradually through word of mouth more talukas began to show interest and now in 201314 they are working in four talukas of Thane district covering around 1,200 schools. They even received good support from the Government and parents who promoted and motivated the idea. Pramila Nayakwadi, Principal of Aryan Education Society School, Girgaum who has been covered under this program said that the students have benefited immensely and have shown good enthusiasm in the class. “We began this program on April 8, 2013, with standard one and two. Since we are a Marathi medium school and English is not our primary language, our students struggled with it. However, after using these DVDs students have shown great interest towards the language. Also, animation and music adds to their entire learning experience. So people are happy with the change and have also started conversing in English.” When asked if they had expected such kind of a feedback and support from people, Orayan said, “It would have been difficult if we had faced resistance from any party involved, however, everyone supported the cause with open arms and their willingness to participate made our work easy.”
FDA worries retailers! FDA happens to do this then they should make provisions for our security too because we are the ones who face the patients and their families. If a family is denied medicines because his or her doctor has not followed the model prescription format then it is natural that he or she might get agitated at some point in time”. “Rather than putting restrictions on retailers, the FDA should take efforts and convince the doctors to adopt the format at the earliest”, added Danave. Hakim Kapasi, President of Andheri Chemists' Association, too had similar views. “If the FDA announces this, then we will have no option but to follow the law else action will be taken against us. This will cause inconvenience to the patients but we too will be helpless. At the most, we can
call up the doctor to re-write the prescription in the required format or ask the patient or his family to get a prescription in the model format. But this will be troublesome. So, it is better that the FDA takes measures to see total implementation of the model format from the doctors' side so that we chemists do not have to say no to a patient. The model format for prescription is a good initiative as it will help reduce errors. For the security of the chemists and welfare of the people, the doctors must start using the format at the earliest”, said Kapasi.
What the IMA had to say: Dr. Jayesh Lele, State Secretary, Indian Medical Association (IMA) said, “We will see when this situation comes up. As of now I do not envisage any troubles for the retailers and
the chemists. Having a model prescription format is good because it will contain all essential details about the doctor and the patient, the duration and strength of the dosage, etc. It is for the betterment of the patients, the retailers and the doctors. Yes, there are objections about some requirements like need to write the generic name of the drugs because writing long pharmacological names when it comes to combination drugs is difficult. It is difficult to bring about a change in a practice which has been followed for years, in a day. We will need time. We are going to write to the FDA proposing certain changes in the prescribed format. The Maharashtra Medical Council will also look into it. Once these issues are sorted out, I don't think there is any reason for doctors to not follow the model format”. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

Absence of MNS in this constituency makes it a three-cornered fight between the BJP-NCP-AAP
By Prashant Hamine
T
he absence of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) from the poll fray in Mumbai North-East Lok Sabha constituency has made the contest a triangular one between the NCP, BJP and the AAP. The last minute withdrawal of candidature by Samajwadi Party's Rais Shaikh has only meant that the division of votes will be minimal,
placing the three candidates on even keel. In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Kirit Somaiya (BJP) had lost to Sanjay Dina Patil (NCP) by a narrow margin of 2,933 votes in this constituency. The MNS candidate then, Shishir Shinde, had polled 1.95 lakh votes ensuring Somaiya's defeat by a slender margin. The reason for eyebrows being raised over MNS' absence is that out of the six assembly segments of Mu-
lund, Bhandup West, Vikhroli, Ghatkopar West, Ghatkopar East and Mankhurd Shivajinagar, the MNS represents Vikhroli, Bhandup West and Ghatkopar West. The Mulund and Ghatkopar East constituencies are held by the BJP with Samajwadi Party's Abu Asim Azmi representing Mankhurd Shivajinagar. The constituency itself presents a demographic challenge to the contestants with middle class local-

Medha Patkar, AAP Patkar, AAP leader Feroze Mithiborwala said, “Our model of development is usually equal distribution of wealth.” Bu i l d e r s - g a n g s t e r s slumlords-politicianspolice is the major nexus in the SRA (Slum Rehabilitation Authority) development, which is one of the
major issues in the northeastern suburbs. The nexus is quite apparent and Patkar being a veteran activist who has always stood for slums and poor people has very clear and simple solution to break this nexus. She says that the government brings in the builders to provide shelter to the poor. “This practice should be stopped and the slum owners should themselves opt to bring in their own builder and make the building,” said Sanjay G, another AAP party leader adding that “We are not asking for free shelters but the government should let the people take the lead.” Another major factor which Patkar would like to tackle is to bring in a law to regulate high fees and donations in schools and colleges.
Sanjay Dina Patil confident of winning By Zuber Ansari
I
ncumbent minister Sanjay Dina Patil is seen roaming his constituency with utmost confidence nowadays. Spending most of his time in public meetings with his supporters and taking off on the road to once again woo the Mumbaikars from the North-East constituency, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Patil insists he has little to worry about when it comes to fellow nominees Kirit Somaiya of BJP and Medha Patkar of AAP. Coming down heavily on Somaiya whom he defeated in 2009, Patil said the Modi wave may be washing over Gujarat, “but not in my constituency. Kirit Somaiya who has been involved in many scams will lose the election this time also.” About AAP candidate Medha Patkar he said, “I respect Medhaji but she is not a challenge to me. I am
Sanjay Dina Patil, NCP the only person who can win this seat because my whole family, including my wife, is working hard for the uplift of this constituency.” Speaking to ADC, Patil said that after winning this election, his first task will be to expand the Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Marg because of the problems that occur during peak hour traffic. “In my constituency, I have worked to protect
open spaces, I have built graveyards and I took the initiative to work on Bhandup Railway Station. Eight crores have been been spend on work so far, and more will be spent in the future. In Mulund, Bhandup (W), VikroliKanjurmarg, Ghatkopar (W), Ghatkopar (E) and in Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar we have solved almost all sanitation problems.” Patil claims to have the support of all the communities in his constituency which comprise Marathis with the highest population of more than 7 lakh voters, the Muslims population comes in second and the Gujarati-speakers third. Sanjay Dina Patil has a strong political background. His father Dina Patil, an MLA, worked for the cause of the labourers, his mother Manorama Patil was a Congress corporator six times and his wife Pallavi also plays an active role in politics.
Somaiya and sitting NCP MP Sanjay Dina Patil. Another prominent personality in the poll fray here is Machhindra Chate, owner of Chate Coaching Classes, who is contesting on a BSP ticket. A total electorate of 16.29 lakh, comprising 9.02 lakh male, 7.26 lakh female and 69 other category voters will decide the electoral fortunes of 20 candidates on April 24, across 1,640 polling stations in the constituency.

T
he Mumbai North-East constituency has a major political contest coming up this time among Sanjay Dina Patil of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Medha Patkar of Aam Admi Party (AAP) and Kirit Somaiya of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This marks the fourth time that Somaiya will been contesting from this constituency which includes Mulund, Nahur, Bhandup, Kanjurmarg, Vikhroli, Ghakopar, Shivaji Nagar and Mankhurd. The first time he contested was way back in 1999 against Congress' Gurudas Kamat. He won by a margin of 7,276 votes. The second time in 2004, Gurudas Kamat emerged winner with a whooping 99,400 votes. In 2009, the third time he stood from the North-East constituency, polls predicted that he'd win. However, he lost to Sanjay Dina Patil by a margin of 2,933 votes. This is believed to be because of the untimely split of the MNS from the Shiv Sena. The MNS took with them 2 lakh votes from the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance. Somaiya's strengths Owing to MNS chief Raj Thackeray's outspoken support
Kirit Somaiya, BJP for BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, his party will not contest where the BJP has nominated a candidate. Therefore, there will be no diversion of votes in the BJP-Shiv Sena vote bank. The Mulund to Ghatkopar belt in the NorthEast constituency has a large Gujarati population who will without a second thought vote for Somaiya. Somaiya is known for his active participation in public debates. He's been in the news for RTI exposés on corrupt politicians and bureaucrats and has been seen fighting for victims

of railway accidents to be rightfully compensated. His work has brought him into the limelight making him a well known face in the city. Muslims and Dalits, who comprise the traditional vote bank of the Congress, this time have another contestant on the block in the form of Medha Patkar. She is seen fighting to regularise illegal shanties in Mankhurd, which stands among her other slum development work. This split in Congress support will work to Somaiya's advantage. The North-East constituency has a notable history where no candidate has won two consecutive times, except Subramanian Swamy of the Janata party who won in 1977 and 1980. Somaiya's weaknesses Somaiya lost in the last two Lok Sabha elections. In the last decade, he could not even indulge in door-to-door campaigns like other active politicians. The Samajwadi Party (SP) boasts of a Muslim vote bank which is otherwise the traditional vote bank of Congress. This time, however, in a strategic move, SP did not nominate a candidate to the North-East constituency to avoid a split of the Muslim vote which will be credited to NCP candidate Sanjay Dina Patil. The Republican Party of India (PRI) has a stronghold on a few North-Eastern belts. But considering RPI's alliance with Shiv Sena and BJP, it is a question whether the dalits will remain supportive to the RPI. Conclusion Number games, the NaMo fever and the current scenario showcase Somaiya galloping towards victory. However, predictions, despite being backed by empirical calculations, have been known to be wrong. In politics, scenarios can change overnight. So we wait in anticipation for the day of the results to know what will be.

Man held for molesting boy By Zuber Ansari

he Bandra police on Tuesday arrested a call centre employee for attempting to molest the eight-year-old grandson of a yesteryear Bollywood actor four months ago. The police arrested the man from his Perry Road residence in Bandra (W) after a local identified his photograph and tipped off the police. According to the Bandra police, the man identified as Inayatali Shamatali Sajan (32), had committed the crime on December 18 last year in the lift of the victim's building. Police officials added that the boy who studies in a school in Bandra (W) was returning home when Sajan followed him. As the kid reached his building, Sajan grabbed his hand and entered the gate. When the watchman intercepted the man, he told the watchman that he was the boy’s tuition teacher and was taking him to his house for tuitions. “The boy in his statement told us that the man closed the door of the lift and was about
to kiss him when the victim protested. Sajan was about to take the boy to the terrace, however the victim pressed the button of his desired floor”, said PI Rajendra Kane from Bandra police station. The boy's mother was standing on the fourth floor near the life door to receive her son. On seeing her, Sajan fled before the boy’s mother could alert anyone. After the boy narrated the entire incident to his mother, they approached the police and registered a case. On investigating, police officials found the CCTV recording of the boy’s building and found a picture of the accused entering the gate. On Tuesday, while the officers were with the photo near the boy’s school, one of the passers-by saw the photo and recognised the man. “The local told us that the accused stayed in his building and worked for a call centre. We arrested Sajan for kidnapping, attempt to molestation and sections of the Protection of Children against Sexual Offenses Act”, added Kane.

Hindi film ‘Angry Young Man’ inspired from AB Senior P retty Prachi Sinha and smart Ajay Sinh Rathod are making their debut in Hindi films with film ‘Angry Young Man’. Releasing on 1st May 2014, Angry Young Man is thrilling and mysterious journey of a man who’s every breath is filled with revenge. Who is he seeking? Why is he so full of anger? “Nobody gets angry without a reason, there is some provocation somewhere which causes the anger. This movie is about a person who is always angry but nobody cares to find out why. He meets a girl who falls for him and starts chasing him. It is she who reveals the mystery behind his anger,” says Ajay, who has done some daredevil stunts in the film. Ask Prachi Sinha about her bagging the role, she quips, “I was in Mumbai doing theatre with people like Delnaz Paul and Chaitanya Adib sir. I am also trained in Kathak. I was called for audition and was selected from more than 40 girls. I have loved the story, Ajay is fantastic costar and film’s music is amazing.” Directed by Ramesh Rout and produced under the banner of VSR FILMS, its inspiration comes from Ajay’s fondness for Amitabh Bachchan’s films in the seventies. “I have always been fascinated with Amit Ji’s films and his portrayal of angry young man. Today there is lot of suppressed anger amongst the youth and this film deals with that. I have been influenced with his style,” comments Ajay who has trained from Anupam Kher’s acting school. Although Ajay idolizes AB senior but in personal life he harbors no anger at all. “I am a chilled out person. I don’t get provoked easily.” On the other hand Prachi Sinha finds lots of similarities in her character of Sarah and herself. “I am chirpy, happy go lucky and laugh a lot. In fact I have lost almost close to 20 KG for this film. So did Ajay. We have worked very hard to get into the mould of this story and characters we play. Hope people will like it.” Hailing from Patna in Bihar does she has any connect with Sonakshi Sinha? “My surname, place of origin and profession only,” she laughs.

Why does he have such a low public profile, he was asked. “That is because I have chosen it,” he declared, describing how he had been an MLC for 12 years and was then chosen to go into the rural areas where he has been working at nurturing constituencies and safeguarding the interests of the more vulnerable sections of society. In Mokhada taluka, for example, he has brought about considerable change in the 110 anganwadis that dot the
landscape, each comprising 30 to 40 children. Five years ago he noticed that the anganwadi staff were using firewood to cook the children's mid-day meals, and when he asked why, he was told that the money from the government was given for firewood, that is why they used it! Sawant pointed out how they could instead get gas cylinders, and then arranged with the oil companies to provide the same. “We pay for them”, he said firmly. “Then my staff take it in turns to go to Mokhada to ensure that they receive the cylinders so that cooking is easier.” What would he use his MP Local Area Development Funds for (provided, of course, he is elected)? Sawant hardly had to think. “For equipment for hospitals, for computer labs in schools and to protect and develop grounds and gardens because Mumbai needs all the oxygen it can get”.

MATHADI WORKERS TO OPT FOR NOTA
Peeved at being overlooked by BJP and others in LS Polls, Brahman Mahasangh urges community to use NOTA in upcoming LS elections
By Prashant Hamine
T
he Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) decision to nominate Anil Shirole, a Maratha candidate in a predominantly Brahmin community in the Pune Lok Sabha constituency has angered the Brahman Mahasangh, the apex body of the community in the state which has now issued a dictat to the community spread all over the state and in the country to press the 'None Of The Above' (NOTA) button to register their protest. This could seriously affect the electoral prospects of the major political parties, especially the BJP-Shiv Sena in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections not just in Mumbai and Maharashtra, but in 13 states in the country. The 1.10 crore Brahmin population is spread predominantly in Mumbai, Thane, Nashik, Nagpur, Yavatmal, Amravati, Aurangabad, Solapur and Sangli. In Mumbai, the community has a strong presence in Girgaum, Dadar, Vile Parle, Ghatkopar, Mulund, Goregaon, Jogeshwari and Borivali. Outside Maharashtra, the community has significant presence in Uttaranchal (24 per cent), Uttar
Pradesh (21 per cent), Gujarat (14 per cent), Rajasthan (15 per cent), Madhya Pradesh (12 per cent), West Bengal (12 per cent), Karnataka (10 per cent), Andhra Pradesh (six per cent), Tamil Nadu (three per cent) and Kerala (one per cent). The immediate cause for the decision of the Mahasangh was the denial of the BJP to consider the candidature of its sitting MLA from Pune's Kasbapeth assembly c o n s t i t u e n c y, Girish Bapat, and its former Rajya Sabha MP P r a k a s h Javadekar for the Pune Lok Sabha constituency. Both belong to the Brahmin community. Sources disclosed that Bapat who has been since sulking even attended the Mahasangh meeting in Pune last week where the call to boycott the polls was given. Speaking to ADC yesterday, Mahasangh president Govind Kulkarni stated, “It is true that we have issued the appeal to the Brahmin community to use the NOTA option. Not a single political party has fielded a Brahmin candidate in Pune despite the fact that

reached a secret understanding about defeating the Shiv hief Minister Prithviraj Sena.” Chavan on Tuesday came down heavily on the BJP's election manifesto and said that the manifesto has highlighted the ideological confusion in the saffron party. Speaking to reporters at Gandhi Bhavan, Chavan said, “While one section of the party wanted to focus only on developmental issues, another section felt that the party can’t brush aside core ideological issues like Ram Mandir, Article 370 and common civil code. There is no unanimity in the party leadership on issues”. “BJP’s PM candidate Narendra Modi wanted to hide these ideological divisions within the party and that is why he was trying to avoid the publishing of the manifesto. Had the BJP left it to the wishes of Modi, he would have preferred not to bring out any manifesto at all as he believes that he is the manifesto himself and there is no need of discussions”, Chavan added. Commenting on the recent rift between the BJP and the Shiv Sena, Chavan said, “It seems that there is an alliance within an alliance as the BJP and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) have

30 per cent of the electorate comprises Brahmins. We had been demanding that political parties give tickets to at least five candidates belonging to the Brahmin community. For the last 60 years, the community has been labeled as pro-BJP. The BJP has taken the community for granted. The Congress on the other hand argues that since the community does not vote for them they are least bothered. In Maharashtra, the Brahmin community population is about 1.10 crore which is almost 10 per cent”. Replying to queries over the BSP and Samajwadi Party wooing the community with reservation quota, Kulkarni remarked that no political party in Uttar Pradesh can ignore the sizeable 21 per cent Brahmin population. “This time around it will be difficult for the BJP in the elections having ignored the community”. Just five candidates from the community have been nominated – two each by the BJP and MNS and one by the Congress in the entire state. Former BJP president Nitin Gadkari is contesting from Nagpur, while Poonam Mahajan-Rao has been fielded from Mumbai North-Central. The MNS has fielded Abhijit Panse from Thane and Aditya Shirodkar from Mumbai South-Central constituency, while the Congress has fielded Gurudas Kamat from Mumbai North-West constituency.

Expressing disappointment over lack of progress in resolving their housing issue, Mathadi Union threatens to use NOTA in upcoming LS Polls By A Staff Reporter
C
iting no progress in resolving the housing problem of the Mathadi workers (head loaders) at APMC and other wholesale markets, Mathadi Kamgar Union has advised its workers and their family members to press the 'None Of The Above' (NOTA) button on the Electroni Voting Machines (EVMs) in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections. In a statement issued here yesterday, union leader Baburao Ramiste has lamented that since 2006 there has been virtually no progress in constructing affordable housing for Mathadis at Chembur and Wadala. He said that the boycott threat will severely dent the electoral prospects
of the Congress in Mumbai, Pune, Satara, Kolhapur and Solapur where more than a lakh of Mathadi workers and their family members reside. The Mathadi union leader stated that the Mathadis have traditionally been supporting the Congress. In 1988, then chief minister late Shankarrao Chavan had allocated 58 acre plots at Chembur and Wadala for the Mathadi housing society. In 2006, a bhoomi pujan was also done, but due to technical reasons and hurdles in granting clearances, the file has been pending with the chief minister's office for a year and half. He added that the problems of the Mathadi workers have compounded as the prices of building
materials have risen. Many of them have availed bank loans and have to pay interests on it. Ramiste disclosed that the proposal was for construction of 300 sq. ft. flats with balcony. Besides the original FSI, additional TDR is needed to be obtained from the market to build maximum flats. This has resulted in the prices shooting up to Rs.25 lakh which is unaffordable for the Mathadis. To bring the prices down to Rs.8 lakh, permission was sought from the government to allow enrollment of non-Mathadi members which is still not given. Ramiste stated that in 2008 the government had granted permission to the police housing society in Ghatkopar.

Ponder awhile… “A Bill of Rights is what the people are entitled to against every government, and what no just government should refuse, or rest on inference.” — Thomas Jefferson
AAP chief attacked by an aam aadmi T
here are quite a few folks, particularly in Delhi, who would like AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal to disappear. When he started campaigning in Delhi before the Assembly polls, the government had decided to give him the highest possible security. At that time Kejriwal had said he did not want any security from the government and God would take care of him. These were regarded as brave words but were far from existing actualities. The government continued to provide escorts for Arvind Kejriwal. It is a fact that the AAP is now posing strong, inconvenient challenge to quite a few political parties and groups. In the course of a few months, it has made political space for itself. In Delhi, the BJP and the Congress are now seriously worried about how they are going to fare in the Lok Sabha elections. The AAP is posing a big challenge to them. Is it possible that party rivalry has got something to do with the attacks on Kejriwal? Yesterday, a rickshaw driver who garlanded him, slapped him hard. Later the rickshaw driver said he was disappointed with the unfulfilled promises of Arvind Kejriwal. The AAP says the masterminds are political parties who want to break up the party. There is also an observation that it could be the attack by one of the AAP workers. Arvind Kejriwal did not seem to be unhappy with the attack. He has begun to exploit the development: He went to Rajghat and with his head down, and eyes closed, sat silently. He could not have but known that the attack would get him a lot of sympathy from the Delhi citizens. Maybe he welcomes the happening because he gets now sympathy and more votes.
T
he great Indian electoral mosaic tends to throw up confusing patterns. The battle for Amritsar, for instance. It was supposed to have been a cakewalk for Arun Jaitley, who is contesting his first Lok Sabha election from this historic city. Instead, the man who has emerged as the third face of the ruling triumvirate in the BJP is sweating it out. It’s ironic that this is one constituency where local factors are colouring a national election. Although most of north India is supposed to be in the grip of a Modi wave, the picture in Amritsar is somewhat skewed by a strong negative undercurrent against the ruling Akali Dal government in Punjab. It’s Modi versus Badal here with Jaitley doing a fine balancing act to win. Complaints pour in from the residents. The government recently raised city taxes. Garbage is piling up everywhere. Milk prices have gone up. Corruption is sky high. The litany of woes stops when Modi’s name is mentioned. Can it trump the sense of local frustration? Jaitley is not taking any chances. He has shifted with family to Amritsar and intends to stay put in the constituency till polling is over. He did not even fly to Delhi for the release of the BJP’s election manifesto. And he’s thumping the pavement. He goes door-to-door, addresses rallies, attends meetings organised by local interest groups and gets barely any sleep. An additional complication is the Congress decision to field its former chief minister, Amarinder Singh, from the constituency. His entry into the fray has energised the lifeless local unit of the Congress which has sunk its differences to campaign for Singh. Although there is a palpable anti-Congress mood among voters, Singh has big brand attraction in Amritsar which Jaitley lacks at present. He is toiling hard to overcome this handicap and become an Amritsari. The high flier has been grounded.

But a morning walker is a morning walker. Amritsar may not have a Lodi Garden but it does have a Rambagh, or Companybagh as it used to be called by the British colonialists. On Sunday, Jaitley took his friends for a round there, combining business with pleasure as he used the walk to meet voters and address small gatherings at the badminton and tennis courts. It was nowhere as glamorous as

The high spot of the morning walk was a chance encounter with Jaitley’s opponent, Amarinder Singh of the Congress. How TDP returned to NDA
R
ajya Sabha MP Naresh Gujral of the Akali Dal prefers to keep a low profile but he played an important backroom role in helping the BJP to seal an electoral alliance with
Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP. Gujral set the ball rolling some eight months ago when he spoke informally to Babu’s man in Delhi and fellow Rajya Sabha member Y.S. Chaudhary about rejoining the NDA. It took Chaudhary a long time to persuade Babu and Gujral hosted several meetings between the TDP chief and BJP bosses at his bungalow in Delhi in a bid to help them find common ground. There was so much resistance from state cadre of both parties that the negotiations went back and forth and almost broke down several times. Interestingly, the BJP deployed another Rajya Sabha MP Piyush Goyal to help with the talks. Goyal’s importance was his proximity to the BJP’s ruling triumvirate and he was authorised to talk tough with the party’s state leaders. BJP interlocutors met with Babu’s people in Gujral’s residence for three days with no success. The venue then shifted to Babu’s residence in Hyderabad. The deal was finally sealed at 3 am on Sunday. The wheel had come full circle with the TDP back in the NDA fold after leaving the alliance in protest against the 2002 Gujarat riots.
Modi, the hard taskmaster Senior leaders of the BJP are gradually learning what it means to work with Narendra Modi. He’s no Atal Behari Vajpayee. Modi is a hard taskmaster, knows exactly how to get his way and doesn’t mince words to convey what he wants. Murli Manohar Joshi felt the full brunt of the Modi whiplash when he presented the draft election manifesto to the parliamentary board for approval a couple of weeks ago. Modi simply tossed aside the thick tome Joshi placed on the table and didn’t bother to even glance at it. Who is going to read something as thick and voluminous as this, he asked Joshi with withering contempt. Don’t bring your professorial ways here. Reduce this to ten pages and then show it to me, he is believed to have said. Joshi didn’t know where to look. But Modi had his way, both with form and content, as evident from the document that was finally released.

ike Mahavira, Buddha put great stress on non-violence (Ahimsa) in regard to living creatures. He believed in the purity of all living beings. He said that it was not man only, but the birds and beasts also that are to be loved. But unlike Mahavira, he ceased going too far with his doctrine of non-violence. He never preached that man should get deeply concerned over such things as trees, stones, etc. Buddha kept silent over the existence of God, for he was averse to seeing his precept become the centre of much controversy. Buddha deemed it wise to keep silent over these issues. He did neither deny explicitly the existence of God, nor did he think that God was absolutely necessary for the attainment of Nirvana. Buddha, like Mahavira, was opposed also to the performance of costly rites in which large number of animals was sacrificed. On the contrary, he condemned those ceremonies. He was opposed to the precedence of the Vedas and superiority of the Brahmins. He believed that for attainment of salvation (Nirvana) no arrangement for outward and ostentation rituals was necessary. Caste System Condemned: Buddha was well aware of the fact that caste system was highly detrimental to the solidarity of Hindu
society. He condemned the system. In his opinion, social discrimination should not apply to birth, but to ethical nature of job a person generally does in his life. A wicked man should stand condemned in spite of his being Brahmin by caste. On the other hand, a Sudra should be praised, for his noble deed. Buddha preached this teaching with avid interest. Attainment of Nirvana: In Buddha’s opinion, the main goal of human life is the at-
MATTER & SPIRIT tainment of Nirvana, that is, complete emancipation of the individual soul. Nirvana is that stage where man emancipates himself from the regular cycle of life and death. Any man, irrespective of caste and creed, can attain this perfect bliss and happiness, provided that he leads an honest life and follows the ‘Astangika Marga’ or Eight-fold path. Concept of Nirvana in Buddhism: In his search for that ultimate liberation, Buddha brought the concept of Nirvana. Nirvana was the eternal salvation from the misery of existence. To enjoy the bliss of Nirvana, he advised man to follow the Middle Path or the Noble Eight-fold Path of a purer life. It should be a life of no possessions, no desires and no
worldly attachment. It should also be a life of compassion, goodness and kindness. According to Buddha, there is only misery and not the miserable. To Buddha, the Eightfold Path would bring the realisation that everything was transitory, full of misery and unreal. The sense of nothingness would take away the sense of `I-ness’ or ‘me’, and destroy the ego. It would bring a state of happiness, far above selfish desires and worldly attachment. That would liberate the man from his self consciousness and from rebirth. With desires gone and with the annihilation of the self, the Nirvana comes as the final liberation from all pains, and the pain of worldly existence once for all. Code of Conduct: Buddha laid special stress upon pure moral life and honest dealing of a man. One should be sincere about one’s thought, speech and action. He prescribed for his disciples a code of conduct. His main instructions are: (1) Do not covet other’s property; (2) Do not tell a lie; (3) Do not kill any living being; (4) Refrain from drinking liquors; (5) Do not participate in singing and dancing; (6) Do not use flowers and perfumed goods; (7) Do not receive money and save it, etc. — Gautam Buddha

T-20 loss: Don't blame it on Yuvi, please YUVRAJ Singh had a poor game but that is part and parcel of the game! The best of cricketers in the world can have a bad day and it is unfair to crown Yuvraj Singh as the villain for our shameful defeat in the finals of the T-20 world cup against Sri Lanka. Even captain M.S. Dhoni was searching the ball at the fag end of the innings and Amit Mishra too bowled 'donkey drops' which were flogged over the ropes by the Lankans. People's memory is very short and one should not forget the brilliant innings of Yuvi for our country in the past. He won the last ODI world cup for our nation and his six hits over the ropes in limited overs international game is still fresh in our memories which is a world record. He batted poorly in the finals without exception but any player can have a bad day in office and even the likes of Tendulkar and Lara have struggled in important games in the past. The entire team with the exception of Kohli played badly and are to be blamed for our poor show just like the entire team gets credit for a win. and score fast when runs were needed badly from a No.4 batsman in the T20 finals as they were in praising his efforts when he scored 62 runs in the fourth match in the league phase, enabling his team to win it. Therefore it does seem strange when his father Yograj Singh and Sachin came to his defence quite unrealistically. Yuvraj was limping visibly in the semifinal game against the Proteas and did not score. He has been miserably out of form and scored in only one match out of five and so it would have been more sensible if he had on his own excused himself from the playing eleven in the finals in the interest of the team. That he scored six sixes in an over is history now and he cannot be riding on it for eternity -- each match has to be played to potential and past reputations alone will not help. — Dr. V. Customer disservice CUSTOMER service in India is a casualty. Not only that, goods once sold are not taken back or exchanged, but, in fact, post sale, service to the satisfaction of the customer is also not rendered, and the customer is often treated as a nuisance. Samsung India Electronics Pvt. Ltd. is a big name. I had in September 2013 purchased a costly mobile handset manufactured by Samsung. The device soon turned out to be a defective one. As the defect continued to persist, I requested Samsung to replace the handset. The company declined, and has asked me to deposit the mobile with its service centre, for a third time within a period of four months. I hope that this letter will prompt the top brass of Samsung to resolve my complaint, and spruce up its service, making it customer-friendly. — V.V. Vijayan, Chembur

Nancy Powell's resignation expected THE resignation of US Ambassador to India Nancy Powell last week is not surprising as the change of guard was expected when the new government takes charge after Lok Sabha election results on May 16, 2014. The test of this will be how the US handles the Khobragade affair now onwards. A silly US justice department official was permitted by the state department to run amok in the Khobragade case. This speaks of political insensitivity on the part of the US foreign policy makers. The US embassy in Delhi, under Ms Powell, played its part by spiriting away to the US Ms Devyani Khobragade's controversial maid's husband and child. That cast a shadow on the ambassador's tenure, but she also fits the picture of 'fall guy'. I strongly feel that Ms Nancy Powell did not move fast and befriend Indian leaders including BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi whose visa problems with

he Bombay High Court will on April 29 hear a suit filed by Khuzaima Qutbuddin, who claims to be the 53rd Dai al-Mutlaq and head of the Dawoodi Bohra community, seeking to be declared as the Syedna. The suit was mentioned before Justice Gautam Patel on Tuesday who posted it for hearing on ad-interim relief on April 29, reports PTI. Qutbuddin, who had filed the suit last week, had sought interim relief that Mufaddal
Saifuddin, the second son of the late Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, be restrained from holding himself or doing any acts, deeds or things as the 53rd Dai al-Mutlaq of the community. Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin passed away on January 17 this year. Qutbuddin, who is the half-brother of the late Syedna, alleged that his nephew's succession as Syedna was false. The matter was placed before Justice Patel yesterday after Justice S.J. Kathawalla on Monday recused himself from hearing the case. "We even invited him (Mufaddal) for a debate and establish the rightful claim of nass (succession). But all the attempts have been ignored and rebuffed by Shehzada Mufaddal Saifuddin," the family had said.

With exams underway, students are putting in all their efforts to score good marks. While stressing on the most important thing, i.e. studying, be doubly sure not to neglect other significant factors and aspects that go a long way in bettering your performance during the examinations. Nivedita Dargalkar reports...
STUDY SMART
Students have to make it a habit to study smart if they wish to revise the enormous portion a day before the exam as it is practically impossible to go through the entire portion. “A good technique for this is that students make snapshots or briefs of each module and revise them. This way they will be able to go through their entire portion in a day,” advises Nishtha Tiwari, organisational psychologist and counsellor. Tiwari also suggests techniques like mind-mapping and making flash/memory cards to aid students in their revision during the exams. “Mind-mapping is a technique wherein you develop logical sequences or a storyline for an entire chapter whereas memory cards are crisp and precise notes you make to remember and recall important points or formulas.
These memory cards are to be kept where you are most likely to see them often so that you will keep on subconsciously memorising the stuff and it will be available to you just when you need it,” explains Tiwari. Students must also learn to prioritise their study plan so that they effectively work on areas they are weak in. “Once students set their priorities, they must devote more time to the portion they feel they are not so good at whereas quickly revise the chapters they find easy. Revisions should be made interesting and more interactive wherein parents can be a part of this and ask questions to the children,” advises Tiwari. Tiwari further says that students have to stop giving in to the temptation to stay awake and bargain Continued on pg 14 «

Are you Exam-Wise? Continued from pg 13 « on their sleep to study ‘more’ for the exam. “Students have to ensure that they get quality sleep as research has proved that lack of sleep interferes with good memory and thereby your performance in the paper the next day,” cautions Tiwari. Diet matters What students eat during the exam also plays an important role in how active or lethargic they feel during this timeperiod and hence it is very important to watch your diet during this time in particular. “Usually students display two types of eating patterns during exams. The first type are the ones who feel hungry and keep munching constantly while studying. However, they usually choose unhealthy stuff like biscuits and chips. The second type are the ones who get so engrossed in studying, that they won’t even eat for long intervals,” explains Siddhika Ghag, a registered dietician. “Though it is not unusual to feel more hungry during this time, students who fall in the first category have to watch about the food items they pick. They can choose healthier options like wheat khakras, roasted chana and fruits. Since it’s summer-time, they can have buttermilk, lassi or a bowl of fruit yogurt made of seasonal fruits and coconut water,”
Checklist at exam centre: Reach 15 minutes earlier at the exam hall and be seated in your seat as centres start the procedure of installation of bar-codes. With all formalities done, you can then solely concentrate on answering your question paper once it is handed over to you. Since it is summer-time, carry a bottle of water and some nuts or a banana that can give you instant energy. Spare 10 minutes in the beginning and read the question paper thoroughly. In case of options, choose the questions you want to answer and plan your time accordingly. Keep a regular time-check throughout the duration of the exam so that you do not waste more time over any one question only. Don’t get stuck somewhere if you cannot recall something at that particular time. Instead leave some space for it and start answering another question. Many a times you will be amazed to know that you might quickly recall the answer after coming back to the same question half an hour later. Once the exam is over, do not discuss or speculate with your friends on how the paper was. In case this is not in your favour, it will cause unnecessary disappointment and hamper your performance in the paper next day. says Ghag. Students must also have protein-rich foods to aid their mental functioning. “Egg-whites, milk, soya milk and soya products, sprouts, pulses and fish are great sources of protein and consuming them will keep students mentally active and sharp,” advises Ghag. For students who fall in the second category, Ghag has sound advice. “These type of students have to make it a point to ensure that they eat well and healthy during exam time or else what is the use of studying so much and then not having enough energy to perform in the exam. Moreover, staying hungry for longer
periods of time will make you feel dizzy and thereby affect your performance when it is most needed,” warns Ghag. Being summer-time, students must also ensure that they have enough water and are hydrated at all times. Students must cut down on their caffeine consumption during the exam period as this may negatively affect their health. “Students must limit the consumption of tea and coffee as it is more of a psychological idea that caffeine helps you stay awake and alert. If you feel so, you can try out herbal tea which will not only keep you fresh but also aid your digestion thereby giving you more energy,” advises Ghag.

Differential calculus again relates well to roots of equations, especially if you use the Rolle’s and Lagrange’s theorems. 4. Complex numbers can be used to solve questions in coordinate geometry too. Trigonometric questions require applications of De Moivre’s theorem. 5. Permutation - Combination and Probability is another very important topic in Algebra. You need to be thorough with the basics of Bayes' theorem, derangements and various ways of distribution, taking care of cases where objects are identical and when they are not. 6. Matrices can be related to equations, hence a 3x3 matrix can actually be visualized as being three-planed in 3D geometry. Determinants have some very nice properties, for instance, the ability to break them into two using a common summand from a row/column, which should be made use of in tougher questions. 7. Integral calculus can be simplified using tricks and keeping in mind some basic varieties of integrable functions. Remembering the properties and applying them wisely saves a lot of time. 8. Co-ordinate geometry requires a good working knowledge of the parametric forms of various conic sections and an ability to convert the other, tougher ones to these basic forms and then interpret the solutions accordingly. 9. Finally the only one way to do well in Mathematics is to practice problems keeping in mind the pattern of questions in previous years’ JEE papers.

TIPS FOR JEE (Advanced): MATHEMATICS 1. Previous JEE papers suggest that more attention should be paid to topics like Vectors and 3-D than Probability or Indefinite Integration as Vectors and 3-D offers very less scope to examiner, as far as variety in problem is concerned. One more chapter is Complex Number, every year two to three problems (of purely complex no.) are asked. Hence mastering complex numbers, vectors, 3-D and Definite integral must be on top priority. 2. Algebra can be made easier if you have the ability to picture functions as graphs and are good at applying verti-

‘Practical knowledge is a must’ “The ability to deal with people and make them understand your views is the key to success,” says Vispi Rusi Bhathena, Chief Executive Officer
I
did my Masters Level Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration, from Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research Centre; Professional Soft Skills Trainer, City and Guilds, UK; Certified Customer Relationship Management, Affiliated to Algonquin College, Canada; Bachelor of Commerce, Mumbai University (Distinction Holder in Industrial Psychology and Export Marketing); Diploma in Hotel Management, International Airlines and Tourism, Trade Wings; Diploma in Advance Programme in Computer Applications, NIIT. I studied in Byramjee Jeejeebhoy College of Commerce Junior College and Bhavan's Somani College, Chowpatty. The first day usually has no studies, only a roll call, syllabus discussion and introduction to new friends; so it was an awesome and enjoyable day of my college. Superb networking! Professors were friendly, cordial in nature and knowledgeable and the best part was they had sensitivity towards students. College life was awesome. My favourite eating, meeting, and socialising places were in the college campus, specially the college canteen. A friend in need is a friend indeed is a proverb that stands true always. My friend circle was nice and we were very helpful to each other. My school and high school level of education laid a strong foundation in my formative years of life. I learned a lot during my post-
graduation since I was also working during those years. I had the benefit of applying what I learned during my classes at the job itself; this helped me get practical exposure which ensured that I was able to deliver well with my clients. Education has now become a direct means to livelihood, the more one is qualified the more one can earn. Graduation was a formal education which as usual taught me the commerce concepts and how to apply commerce in real life. The various subjects I learned in MBA like organisation behaviour, principles of management, managerial economics, statistics, accounts have given me huge exposure in different fields of life. The real exposure I got in MBA was how to deal with various types of people you come across in your life. This taught me how to work in a team and also made me realise how team work is always more effective than individual effect. The power of 'Synergy' that is 1 + 1 = 11 was the ultimate result I learnt from the studies while working in a group. The multi disciplinary approach of management has made my personality versatile in nature and also internally strong to deal with the various challenges of life. I have been able to understand human psychology very well since dealing with people is the most difficult thing in real life. The ability to deal with people and make them understand our view is the biggest key to success. The time line in completing assignments and stress during classes gave us good exposure to stress management. MBA had around six subjects in each semester which gave me an all-round exposure. The summer internship and winter projects in which I worked in corporates gave me exposure as to how to apply the concepts learnt in the class room in the real life world. The opportunity to deal with customers and understanding their needs is a very important thing I learnt and it serves me till date. Today students have a mindset that getting good marks would ensure that they will get good jobs but they don’t understand that the corporate world wants real knowledge and not marks. They should not mug up concepts but rather learn their application which is very important for success in real life. The student fraternity today thinks life is very easy but they seldom know how difficult it is to achieve real success in life. The students also have more of an ego and attitude and think that marketing or meeting people is not enough - the fact of the matter is that they would not get any real life exposure unless they do some good field work. I did door to door sales during my X and XII class vacations and this gave me the real exposure of how to deal with people. Students need to understand that the ability to adapt to the changing situations is the only way to survival and success in the long term. They need to develop ‘intellectual content’ which means they should have real life knowledge regarding the area in which they are interested in. For instance, if they like economics, they should know about the macro-economics aspects of Indian economy and global economy. The application part of knowledge is very important and not the theory part. The student fraternity needs to do their own SWOT analysis which will give them insights about their personality and help them to be more thoughtful regarding the career they choose.

<<Nicole Kidman played the part of a Translator in the movie Interpreter which released in 2005
“Learning a language is as good as doing an MBA,” says Tarana Puri, Translator/ Interpreter and Public Relations Officer for the Consulate General of Argentina, Mumbai. Naressa Coutinho finds out why interpreters have a bright future ahead
T
he world watched as leaders echoed the loss of a great man – Nelson Mandela – at his memorial service last December, and speaking of great men, one ‘ Thamsanqa Jantjie’ gave new meaning or ‘no’ meaning to the service as he fake-interpreted in sign language. Undoubtedly, this outraged the deaf community, questioning his credentials as an interpreter. The job of an interpreter is thus, one of great responsibility. “An interpreter interprets spoken language and ensures that the message is conveyed,” explains Tarana Puri, Translator/Interpreter and Public Relations Officer for the Consulate General of Argentina, Mumbai. “It could either entail interpretations for a one-on-one conversation or a ‘simultaneous interpretation’ at public conferences, proceedings, debates etc.” Schooled in Panama and having started off as a Spanish teacher at a young age of 22, Tarana Puri mastered the art of interpretations and translations through numerous projects and opportunities that came her way. While learning a new language and perfecting it may seem difficult, the players are often few and so the returns from such a career would be worth the effort and more. In fact, she finds that, today, learning a language is equivalent to doing an MBA, even making bigger bucks. To become an interpreter, the first step requires you to select the language to learn. “Capture it when it’s booming,” she says as the market ultimately determines who will profit or lose. In the current scenario, learning Chinese, Japanese or Spanish is a good option since China dominates world trade and Latin American companies are now
looking East for distribution and production. The next most important task is to finish off what you started, and not leave it half way. She recommends interning with natives or even travelling to the country, where they <<Tarana Puri speak the language as this builds your confidence and helps understanding of their culture and ways. “If you get an opportunity to visit the place, avoid going with friends, and instead stay with a family where you’d be forced to converse and think in their language,” she urges. Finding employment is the easy part as the demand for interpreters is ever increasing. Big corporate companies, consular missions and even individual businesses can’t do without them. “Don’t hesitate to take up projects that require medical, legal or technical interpretation because you would only need to have basic knowledge of the topic, as most of the time, either party is already aware of the product and subject matter being discussed,” she explains. The income from this profession is definitely the high point, be it as a contracted interpreter or a freelancer. However, Tarana advises against being purely a freelance interpreter. “It is always good to have a safety net, be it teaching, translating or working at the consulate. While you’d earn a great deal freelancing for even a couple of hours a day or week, there’d be ‘dry days’ where work comes rather slowly.” A day’s interpretation would cost a party or company anywhere between Rs. 6, 0007,000. However, depending on the delega-
« OFFBEAT CAREER
tion, the amount varies. Translators and language teachers in IB schools also earn impressively. A good tutor with sufficient years of experience may charge between Rs.1,000 and Rs.2,000 per hour. The lesser the players, the more demanding is the profession and that much higher, the pay. As an interpreter, you face many challenges but in all her 12 years of experience, Tarana picks ‘accent’ as the trickiest aspect. “Interpreters often find themselves being the medium in crucial business deals, trade talks and even legal proceedings. Sometimes it is a million dollar deal and there can be no room for error. You cannot get distracted even for a second during interpretations,” she says. Your image and body language play a major role here. An interpreter has to be well-groomed and have a pleasing personality. Knowledge of cultures and practices too help in your ability to understand the said and the unsaid. Highlighting the role of the interpreter she says, “The challenge is balancing the temperament of the client with the Indian counterpart as I am the only connection between the two parties and my confidence and personality can make or break their connection.” “It is what makes you stand out in the crowd that guarantees success. Learning more than one language, as a multi-lingual professional, increases your demand in the market. Moreover, this is not a career for the young alone,” she says, “Least to say, there is no age bar, no retirement age and no gender preference. A housewife becomes self-independent by a few translation projects a month, balancing between the needs of her family and career. As an interpreter you meet new people, get exposure to the outside world and become more broad-minded.”

Yuvraj Singh did not play well in the World T20 finals on Sunday. People have made a big issue out of it and have reacted in a very aggressive way. Is it wrong to make Yuvraj Singh the scape goat? We asked city youngsters what they felt about his performance? Yes it is wrong because cricket is a game with ups and downs and Yuvi is a true fighter who fought cancer and came out with a triumph. It is correct that he didn't play well in the final but he was the one because of whom Sachin lifted the World Cup in 2011. —Swapnil Sathey, Pharmacist
Yes it is very wrong on the part of people to make Yuvraj the scape goat. People in India have a short memory. They only remember the mistakes made by a person and not the glory he/she brought for the nation. People are pelting stones at his house. What kind of a behaviour is this? It is completely wrong on the part of people and all the culprits should be put in jail. —Siddhiraj Shirke, Student Yes it is wrong. Even if he did not play well in the finals, it was wrong to single him out. The whole team did not play well and in the end it is a game. One team wins and another one loses. Unfortunately we lost on that night and Sri Lanka were the better team. We won two World Cups because of Yuvraj. People tend to forget that. It is very sad to see such a shameful behaviour from the people. —Tushar Roy, Student

Delhi, a city where the crime rate is higher than Rohit Sharma’s strike rate suddenly witnesses the first rape case under their beloved and newly appointed government led by Kejriwal. A lot more of the same had happened during Sheila Dixit’s term but like it was back then, the mobs lashed out at everyone including the government and suddenly Kejriwal is under tremendous pressure. Although the AAP government is to be blamed for this outrageous act against a Danish national getting molested in the national capital, their response is certainly different and much more aggres-

n uprising has taken the supposedly democratic administrative set-up in this country by storm the Aam Aadmi Party rebellion, led by a successful IIT graduate, who has sacrificed all his educational prowess to turn into the man who holds the key to the fortunes of the national capital. I might not be very well-versed with how the statistics stand, but here’s my take, the opinion of a 17-year old Indian on how I feel things might or rather will change. There’s promise in Kejriwal’s voice while those old skeletons with ‘Gandhi caps’ and white kurtas representing numerous parties from all across India are degreeholders only in promise-making. What is it that sets Kejriwal apart? There’s belief written all over the Aam Aadmi Party’s campaign, but isn’t that also the motto of nearly 35 medium-scale parties that exist in all these powerful states of the Indian subcontinent? What is it that sets the Aam Aadmi Party apart? My answer to this would be simple. The courage to not accept things the way they are. Ever since fourth grade in school, we’ve heard the adage ‘Be the change you want to see’ but most of us behaved like we didn’t give a damn about what was being done and what was being said. We’re all citizens of the same country, all wanting to live ‘happily ever after’ but there’s this one bunch from among us who has given up glorious
sive than the previous administrators. That mention of the term ‘aggression’ shall rid you of confusion on the comparison between Kejriwal and Kohli. Being hit is one thing, but getting back up and delivering is what makes you a hero. While both do it against different opponents and at different magnitudes, the fact remains that they’re both down but not out. Another characteristic that stands out about AAP’s approach is that none of them have ‘Gandhi’ or ‘Yadav’ or ‘Singh’ following their first names. The son of a political supremo often feels that he holds the administrative reins and owns the country as soon as he is born, but in case of AAP, individuals who might have travelled alongside the Delhi crowd or halted at the same signal on a busy road on a Bajaj scooter, are now the ones who have taken up the mantle of leading this metropolis and thus have received overwhelming support from the ‘janata’. Transparency will prevail, if not immediately but eventually. Promises made during his beautiful speech at his swearingin ceremony might seem really unrealistic but I things will turn positive. The conditions seem really tough, the remaining competitors in the battlefield are dreading this challenge, most others have given up, quite a few aren’t bothered about the situation India is in but there are these two dynamites from Delhi who possess the potential to pull India out of all its troubles every time the chips are down - Kejriwal and Kohli.

EW DELHI: The poll holding exercise has witnessed a whopping jump by 80 times to Rs 846 crore since 1952 when it was mere Rs.10 crore. A total of Rs 10.45 crore was spent on country's first election in 1952. As many as Rs 846.66 crore was spent during last general elections in 2009, according to data released by the government. The Centre has borne Rs 5.9 crore expenditure incurred on elections in 1957, as against Rs 7.32 crore in 1962 and Rs 10.79 crore in 1967, the data said.

The AAP leader headed for Rajghat after the attack which has been condemned by both BJP and Congress. "No one should slap anyone. This is against democracy. We do not support it," Congress leader Kapil Sibal said. BJP Vijay Goel also criticised the attack on the AAP leader. "We do not approve such things. But there is one thing that there has been more opposition to AAP because they say something and do something else." AAP's Sisodia said people affected by AAP movement were trying to derail it. These vans, carrying cash, are run by private security agencies and engaged by various banks. These vehicles were enjoying general immunity from security agencies as they are employed by banks after necessary due diligence, they said. It has been decided to ask Indian Banks' Association (IBA) to take necessary measures and it may issue directions in this regard, sources said.

Target Rs. 270
Strong Growth Momentum to Continue: Focused approach, aggressive branch expansion coupled with well defined strategies has resulted in strong advances growth (3 year CAGR ~38%) wherein loan book has increased from ~Rs.22 bn in FY11 to ~Rs.58 bn till date. Inspite of strong parentage (Canara Bank), CHL is a professionally managed NBFC with totally independent management from parent. Strategy to expand distribution network (~2x in 3 years to 85 branches) is likely to provide further impetus to advances growth going forward. Management anticipates the advances growth momentum to continue on back of ongoing branch expansion (FY15E – 105 branches) & expects loan book to reach ~Rs.85 bn & Rs.105 bn by FY15E & FY16E resp. (our estimates for FY15E & FY16E is ~Rs.78 bn & Rs.98 bn resp.). Stable Asset Quality with Robust Return Ratios despite Aggressive Advances Growth: Secured retail lending, lower ticket size advances (avg. 1.0 mn) coupled with prudent risk management has enabled CHL to maintain healthy asset quality over the last couple of years. Albeit continuous stress in the economy, its GNPA has improved remarkably from ~1.1% in FY11 to ~0.3% in 9MFY14 which it expects to remain stable at this levels despite growing loan book. OUTLOOK & VALUATION: CHL has emerged as one of the fastest growing NBFC over the last 3 years with major focus on retail housing. Focused approach along with implementation of well defined strategies has helped it to grow at a much faster pace. Aggressive branch expansion in recent past is likely to aid strong advances growth going forward. Despite slowdown, we expect advances to grow at a CAGR of ~30% over FY14 16E. Secured loan portfolio along with prudent risk management is likely to keep asset quality intact. Strong fundamentals, robust return ratios coupled with stringent provisioning norms provides better comfort. Considering the sound business model & strong growth prospects, we feel the stock is trading at very attractive valuations compared to its peers & hence recommend ‘BUY’ with a price target of Rs. 270.
Religare calls a ‘Sell’ on BHEL CMP: Rs. 178
Target Rs. 110
BHEL reported FY14 Gross sales of Rs 403.7 bn (↓ 20% YoY), in-line with our expectations. However, Adj. PAT of Rs 34.2 bn (↓ 48% YoY, reported PAT includes costs related to BHPV merger) missed our expectations, possibly on lower operating margin. Be believe that the management’s claims of improved cash situation and arrest in rising debtors level stem from cash inflows related to highest ever commissioning/synchronization achieved in FY14, which in turn is related to historical peaks of order inflows achieved in FY10/11. We reiterate our thesis of shrinking revenue, besieged margins/return ratios and headwinds to addressable business opportunities. SELL. Revenue continues to contract on dwindling order book position: BHEL reported gross turnover decline of 20% YoY in FY14, impacted by contraction in order book position. Order book for BHEL has been contracting since FY12 (order book for the company peaked in FY11 at Rs 1.64 trillion and since then it has contracted at an annual CAGR of 14% between FY11-14. At the beginning of FY14, Power segment order book was down 14% YoY to Rs 932 bn, while Industry segment order book was down 35% YoY to Rs 115 bn (overall order book was ↓ 15% YoY to Rs 1.15 Tr). Profitability continues to erode on lower top line: The decline in top line continues to hit profitability for BHEL. Implied PBT margin for FY14 is down 750 bps to 12% levels while implied adj. PAT margin is down 490 bps YoY to 8.8% in FY14 (assumed markup of 3.5% between net and gross sales, same as in FY13). Order finalizations in Power support inflows; order book continues to contract: Order inflow for the fiscal is down 12% YoY to Rs 280 bn while implied order book at the end of FY14 stands at Rs 1,015 bn or down 12% YoY. Implied Order inflows for Q4FY14 clocked Rs 163 bn and was supported be some the big ticket power orders like (a) a Rs 79bn EPC order for setting up NTPC’s 660x3MW North Karanpura plant; (b) a Rs 30bn order for 2x800MW steam generators (boilers) for NTPC’s Darlipali project in Odisha; and (c) a Rs 3.2bn order for a 206MW hydroelectric project in Punjab. Reiterate SELL with target price of Rs 110: The above result endorses our thesis of declining profits/return ratios for BHEL in view of declining revenue and elevated fixed costs. Further, shrinking order inflows and order book position highlights the issues related to challenging addressable business opportunities for BHEL. Reiterate SELL with TP of Rs 110. At our current estimates the stock is trading at P/E of 20x for FY15E and the current valuations are unwarranted given the declining operating parameters.

M
utual funds offloaded shares worth more than Rs. 14,000 crore during the FY 2013-14, making it the fifth consecutive year of net outflows. As per the latest data compiled by market regulator Sebi, mutual funds (MFs) sold shares worth Rs. 14,208 crore during the last fiscal, lower than the Rs. 22,749 crore offloaded in the preceding financial year (2012-13). The financial year ended March 31, 2014, also marked the fifth consecutive year of net outflows by mutual funds in the equities after pumping in a net amount of Rs. 6,985 crore in the share market in 2008- 09. During the last five finan-
cial years till 2013-14, MFs had cumulatively sold shares worth over Rs. 68,000 crore from equities. In comparison, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) made a net inflow of a staggering nearly Rs. 80,000 crore in equities in 2013-14. However, FIIs kept away from the debt market and pulled out net sum of over Rs. 28,000 crore during the fiscal in the segment due to weakness in the Indian currency. During 2013-14, MFs were net sellers of equities in 10 out of 12 months, while May and August were the only months to record net inflows. MFs had put in Rs. 3,508 crore and Rs. 1,607 crore in equity schemes in May and August respectively.

EW DELHI: Senior opener Gautam Gambhir says “had there been an IPL auction today, he would have still gone” for Yuvraj Singh and called him India’s “greatest match-winner” in limited overs cricket. “I don’t think any cricketer has criticised Yuvraj. It is the media which has attacked him and we need to be careful about what we say. He has been our greatest match-winners in limited overs cricket,” Gambhir said during a promotional event here. Yuvraj has been castigated by fans for his 21-ball 11 that was one of the primary reasons for India’s World T20 defeat against Sri Lanka, last Sunday. “At the IPL auctions, we were really close to getting him before RCB won the bid. Let me put it this way. Had there been auction today, the Kolkata Knight Riders would have bid for him in the same aggressive manner. Yuvraj according to me is our greatest match-winner till date,” Gambhir, who was the topscorer in 2007 World T20 said during an event organised by ‘Advanced Hair Studio’. Asked if the team is becoming early 90’s and Gambhir’s answer team game and 11 players are out there in the field. The game is won overtly dependent on Virat Kohli as was an emphatic no. “That’s never the case. Cricket is a by 11 players and lost by 11 players. it was with Sachin Tendulkar in the
It’s not an individual sport,” he said with a lot of conviction. But if one man scores 77 out of a total of 130, doesn’t it reflect the overdependence, Gambhir counterquestioned: “How many deliveries do you get in T20 cricket? 120 balls and not 300 deliveries! It is natural that your Nos 1, 2 and 3 will score more than your Nos 4, 5 and 6.” Virender Sehwag has shown some form in the zonal phase of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 and Gambhir was asked as to why he KKR would have gone for Yuvraj and not Sehwag. “Well, it was a part of the strategy and the decision is taken by at least 5-6 people. We wanted Yuvi more and that’s why we bid for him.” Has anything changed for him that Sehwag is back to opening the batting, he replied, “I don’t think anything has changed for me as I was always opening the batting. I have never had any plans of batting in the middle-order. I started my career as an opener and would like to end as an opener.” Gambhir had a good zonal leg of Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy, scoring 162 in five matches with 75 as the highest score. He attributed it to batting on greenish tracks at the Roshanara ground during Ranji Trophy.

B-town rallies behind heartbroken Yuvraj
N
EW DELHI:As Yuvraj Singh faces public ire for his poor showing in the lost World T20 finals against Sri Lanka, many of his fans and Bollywood have rallied behind the beleaguered batsman. Some unruly fans pelted stones at the all-rounder’s residence in Chandigarh. Bollywood though took to social media to extend their support to the left-hander, who was instrumental in getting two World Cups to India — the 2007 T20 title and the 50-over trophy in 2011. Megastar Amitabh Bachchan wrote on his blog, “Ok .... So we lost to Sri Lanka in the World Cup final T20 tonight .. Yes disappointed, but proud of our team and our boys for reaching the final, against the best teams in the world .. It was just not our day and the better team won...Congratulations to Sri Lanka, who played really well ..” Actor Varun Dhawan, whose ‘Main Tera Hero’ is currently in cinemas, tweeted, “Yuvi won us the World Cup, he gave us happiness when he was still having cancer. How can people forget that #Shame...” Director Madhur Bhandarkar also voiced his support for the out-ofform player, tweeting: “Who are these idiots who are pelting stones just because we lost a game? Have we forgotten it was @YUVSTRONG12 who won us both d World Cups?”
I want to contribute again NSrinivasan set to attend ICC meeting in Dubai to Mumbai cricket: Patil
M
UMBAI: After quitting the selection panel last year as he was unable to devote time to watch local cricket due to his tight schedule as chief national selector, former India batsman Sandeep Patil has accepted the offer to head Mumbai’s senior panel and has been named as the chairman of the committee by the Mumbai Cricket Association. “They (MCA) were after me for a long time to join the panel. Last year I quit as I was not able to watch domestic cricket due to my tight schedule with the senior India squad. But this time I was assured they would identify talented players on the fringe and I would have to watch a few games only and I accepted the offer,” Patil told PTI.
Patil has been named as the head of the four-member senior and under 25 panel also comprising Milind Rege, Sanjay Shetty and Nishit Shetty. “What I am is due to Mumbai cricket and I hope I can put Mumbai cricket back on track. I want to take it up as a challenge,” said Patil. This season Mumbai failed to progress far in the Ranji Trophy after being tripped by arch rivals Maharashtra in the quarter finals and they had not done well in other senior tournaments too like the Vijay Hazare oneday trophy and the T20 zonals. MCA did not appoint a coach for the next season and there are talks that Ajit Agarkar, who retired last year, is the front runner to take over the reins.
EW DELHI: Under-fire N Srinivasan is all set to attend the ICC executive board meeting in Dubai on April 9-10 as BCCI’s “representative” despite being sidelined from the Cricket Board’s affairs following a Supreme Court directive. A senior BCCI official confirmed that Srinivasan “will attend the ICC Board meeting”, according to ‘ESPNcricinfo’. While the Supreme Court had shunted out Srinivasan from all affairs of the board, the two-judge bench had declined to pass an order in relation to his role in ICC affairs, saying it was an “internal” matter of the BCCI. Normally, the BCCI president is inducted onto the ICC board as a Director and the secretary attends the ICC Chief Executives Committee meetings. At every Annual General Meeting, it is the BCCI president who nominates the Board’s
Victorious Lankan cricketers accorded rousing welcome C
OLOMBO: The triumphant Sri Lankan cricketers were today accorded a rousing reception by delirious fans as they touched down at Bandaranaike International Airport here after winning the World Twenty20 crown with the highlight being a victory parade on a decked-up double decker bus. Fans jumped in unbridled joy the moment they got a glimpse of their nation’s heroes. The cricketers lapped up all the love and adulation prompting them to express their thanks. Hero of the final against India and now a retiree from T20 Internation-

Thank you pic,” Sangakkara, who scored a match-winning half-century in the title clash, tweeted. Sri Lanka Cricket had invited “all loyal cricket fans to line the roads up to Galle Face Green and welcome our Champion National”. The arrival had been a much-awaited one for the fans as well as the cricketers. “So excited. It’s gonna be a massive day. Waiting to see all the
fans, and family. Rain gods be kind. Off to the airport in an hour,” Sangakkara wrote. And as it turned out, it indeed was a grand welcome for the players. Sangakkara wrote, “on the double decker bus. Amazing pic.” In one of the pictures, skipper Lasith Malinga was seen standing in front of the double decker bus and waving to the crowd. He was earlier seen holding the trophy inside the plane. Sangakkara also posted a picture showing the airport crew holding the national flag. “Airport ground crew with our flag,” the Lankan legend tweeted.

But since then the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) has requested the ICC to sideline Srinivasan from the executive board and to not allow him to take over as the ICC chairman in July, at least until the time he is cleared of all the charges. The ICC has remained tightlipped over the issue ever since the Supreme Court had Srinivasan removed from his official position of BCCI president. “No comments at this stage,” ICC has representative at ICC meetings, and been repeatedly saying. Baroda, Kerala make winning start in T20 tourney M
UMBAI: West Zone champions Baroda and South Zone runners-up Kerala made a winning start to their campaign in the Syed Mushtaq Ali All India T20 tournament by defeating Bengal and Delhi, respectively. Baroda, who won all their four league games in the zonal event, notched up their fifth straight victory by overwhelming Bengal by seven wickets at the Sharad Paar Cricket Academy ground in the Bandra-Kurla complex. Baroda shot out their rivals for a paltry 96 and then overtook the target easily in 14 overs to score a comprehensive win. Kerala overcame a depleted Delhi by 14 runs in the other Group B game at the Wankhede Stadium by notching up a challenging 150 for 6, with opener V Jagadeesh top scoring with 52 in 36 balls. They then restricted Delhi to 136 for 9 with some efficient bowling and brilliant fielding. In the Baroda-Bengal game, Bengal plunged into trouble soon after being asked to bat first by their rivals to be reduced to 50 for five and never recovered from
this poor start. Captain S Sanyal top scored with 13. For Baroda, medium pacers Lukman Meriwala and Abhijit Karambelkar captured three wickets each on a seaming track. Chasing the modest target, Baroda were given a decent start by Kedar Devdar (11) and Aditya Waghmode (26-ball 27). Although in the middle they lost two wickets in close succession, Baroda sailed home thanks to an unbroken fourth wicket stand of 43 between R Solanki (16 not out) and Deeepak Hooda (24 not out off 17 balls with four fours). A Gani bagged 28 for two for Bengal. In the Kerala-Delhi match, Kerala were off to a fabulous start when openers Jagadeesh, who hit nine fours in an entertaining knock, and J Rakesh (36 in 32 balls) put on 89 runs together. There was a brief wobble when Kerala lost both the openers in successive balls at 89 to Yogesh Nagar and then Rahul Prem was dismissed soon after to leave them at 92 for 3. Captain Sachin Baby (28) rallied the innings around with the
lower order but they still fell at least 20 runs short of what was expected, said coach Chandrakant Pandit later. However, Delhi - without several top players - failed to get off to a sound start and slumped to 35 for three before being revived by the stand of 34 between J Anand (28 off 30 balls) and Nagar (15). But with the asking rate climbing they had to go for the shots and were caught in the deep. Despite the best efforts of Varun Sood (22 off 13 balls with 2 sixes) Delhi fell short with Kerala fielders taking all the catches. It was Delhi’s first loss after having won all five north zone league games to qualify for the inter zonals. Brief scores: Bengal 96 all out in 20 overs (L Meriwala 3/19, A Karambelkar 3/22, H Pandya 2/10) lost to Baroda 97 for 3 in 14 overs (A Waghmode 27, D Hooda not out 24; A Gani 2/28) by seven wickets. Kerala 150 for 6 (V Jagadeesh 52, K Rakesh 36; J Khan 2/22, V Sood 2/29, Y Nagar 2/29) beat Delhi 136 for 9 (V Kumar 2/17, P Prashanth 2/23, K Rakesh (3/34) by 11 runs.
India to take on Serbia in Davis Cup World Group playoffs N
EW DELHI: India will take on Serbia at home in the Davis Cup World Group play-offs to be held from September 12 to 14, raising the possibility of multipletime Grand Slam winner and world number two Novak Djokovic touching down in the country. Bogdan Obradovic-led Serbia will face India for the second time in three years in a bid to maintain their World Group status, having defeated India 4-1 on their most recent foray into the top tier of the competition in the first round in 2011.
The Indian Davis Cup team on Sunday entered the World Group playoffs after notching up a historic away triumph over Korea in the Group I Asia/Oceania second round tie at Busan. Serbia, who lost 2-3 to Switzerland in the World Group first round in February, has not featured in zonal competition since 2007, the year it defeated Australia in the World Group play-offs to secure top tier status for the first time, and will be desperate to avoid a return to Europe/Africa Zone Group I. Meanwhile, Spain and Argentina also face a fight to remain
in the World Group following today’s draw, with Carlos Moya’s five-time champions needing to come away with a win in Brazil and four-time runner-up Argentina due to travel to Israel. Australia, Canada and USA have been handed more favourable home draws, with Pat Rafter’s men hosting Uzbekistan, USA taking on Slovak Republic and Canada granted a home tie against Colombia. The remaining two ties will see Croatia travel to Netherlands in a draw decided by lot, and Ukraine set to host Belgium.

IN BRIEF Pele’s hair turned into diamonds for superfans
RIO DE JANEIRO: Pele has unveiled an unusual line of diamonds using strands of the football legend’s own hair, local media reported. The man many regard as the sport’s best player of all time presented the ultimate superfan souvenir in Sao Paulo ahead of the World Cup that Brazil will host in two months. The diamonds are made using a high-pressure, high-temperature process during which strands of Pele’s hair are charred. The limited edition includes 1,283 diamonds — one for each of the champ’s goals. The gems cost about USD 7,500 a piece and come in a gold-plated box featuring Pele born Edson Arantes do Nascimento — on the pitch scoring a goal. Never far from shop talk, Pele, who is 73, was asked at the event about Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentina’s Lionel Messi. “From our point of view on football, Messi is the more complete one. He creates (opportunities) and scores goals,” Pele said.”Cristiano is (like) our (late) Vava, our Ronaldo. He is a Dada Maravilha,” he added, referring to three Brazilian big scorers.
Anderson set to be fit in time for IPL
WELLINGTON: New Zealand swashbuckler Corey Anderson is expected to be fit for the upcoming Indian Premier League after recovering from a finger injury which had put him in doubt for the cash-rich Twenty20 event. Anderson, who broke the world record for the fastest ODI century soon after bursting into international cricket last year, was a much sought after player in the IPL players’ auction. Defending champions Mumbai Indians eventually grabbed him for a whopping Rs 4.50 crore (USD 750,000). “There’s no fracture, no break and we’re very happy with how the injury is going,” Anderson was quoted as saying by the ‘Fairfax NZ News’

EXCERPTS: You have been honoured with the Padma Bhushan recently, your thoughts on that? It’s a huge award and I am grateful to the government for honouring me with something that makes me feel immensely proud and responsible. How impor tant is it for a player or coach to get recognized like this? Recognition for coaches in our country has been minimal in general. I wouldn’t say this in regards to me but, in general, this profession requires lot of motivation, lot of appreciation because of the fact that it is a very stressful job. Most of the time it’s also thankless. When a player wins the coach doesn’t get much credit, but if a player loses, the coach will get all the flak. Hence, it’s important that the efforts of coaches are recognized and for me this recognition has come at a very right time. Thanks to a whole

While playing competitive badminton, Pullela Gopichand won many laurels for himself and India. The champion shuttler never hung up his racquet though, deciding to give back to the game that was his passion by coaching promising youngsters. His achievements as a player and subsequently as a coach have won him accolades and awards galore, right from the Arjuna Award in 1999, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2001, the Padmashri Award in 2005, the Dhronacharya Award in 2009 and the latest feather in his crown coming in the form of the Padma Bhushan earlier this year. On the sidelines of the US$250,000 Yonex Sunrise-BWF Metlife India Open Super Series badminton championship, Gordon D’Costa in a free-wheeling interview speaks with the affable, soft spoken and highly successful coach and touched on his achievements as player and coach as he dwelled on the future of Indian badminton.

lot of people who have supported us. The Badminton Association of India (BAI), its President Dr. Akhilesh Das Gupta and the entire team; the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the entire team; the government, whose support for the sport has been very important.
What were the highlights of your playing career? If I look at it today, every victory had its significance. Every win was important at that time, be it winning the first Junior National title, the Senior. National titles, State Championship, Commonwealth Games medal, Olympics and the All England Championship. Each win for me is equally significant.
Hyderabad to Bangalore to train at the Prakash Padukone Academy and SAI, Bangalore. I played some tournaments abroad, but by and large I had the belief that I could train to be the best in my own country. I believed that the facilities were available here and to get a proper system in place was important. I had strong beliefs like these, which is what exactly prompted me to take up coaching.
The players you have produced and a few thoughts on each of them? Saina has definitely been the most celebrated of my prodigies. The rise of badminton in India has a lot to do with the rise of Saina. People have started to watch badminton thanks to Saina’s phenomenal All good players don’t necessarily performance at the international make good coaches. When did level. She has been in the top 5 for taking up coaching enter your mind? 3-4 years continuously and now among the top 10 consistently. especially the women. On the men’s side we had Prakash Sir and then me as examples, but Saina is somebody who has proved that Indian women are also strong enough to win at the highest level. When I started coaching in April 2004, Kashyap was the oldest of the lot at 15. He has had his ups and downs, but when it mattered most and when the chips were down he has grown in strength and delivered. His performances in the World Championships, Olympics and Commonwealth
Games have been good and I believe that he is definitely worth more than he has achieved. Sindhu was the youngest of my trainees, at 8, when I started. She has grown up with me the longest and today at 18 she has already got a World Championship medal and many other International titles. Hopefully she will play for another 10-12 years and taste success in many Olympics, World Championships and All-Englands. Then there is K. Srikant, H.S. Pranoy, Sai, Sourabh Varma, who are all very talented and I believe all very good prospects but I don’t want to name a few as I may miss a few more.
Thoughts on the future of badminton in India? The future of Indian badminton is good. There are a lot of exciting prospects. Now we have players who are capable of challenging
the best in the world. But having said that, to be at the top of the world is very challenging and takes a lot of effort. Saina has 5 years more and Sindhu has about 10 years and I am sure they will inspire scores of youngsters to take to the game.
We have known Gopi the player and are now experiencing Gopi as a coach. Little is known about Gopi the person. A few insights into your personal life? I am very fortunate that my parents, wife and kids, a girl (10) and boy (9) ensure that I am protected. I do nothing else other than badminton, go home, read a bit and rest. Badminton takes up most of my time and I love the effort and sacrifices that sports demand as they keep me focused. I am grateful to God for giving me these opportunities. Pullela Gopichand receives the Padma Shri from former president A.P.J Abdul Kalam.
