They also complained about the delay in the response to their RTI query and regarding the officer of the City Survey Department adopting different standards for different persons. Similarly, in the case of Panom Developers, the land records were mutated after a gap of 49 years on the basis of an alleged indenture dated April 11, 1963. In many cases, despite the primary reason for such transfers being as simple as the death of the property owners, the authorities harass the legal heirs of the deceased owners. Many middlemen operate in such offices with the blessings of the concerned officers of the department. Almeda further said that most of the times, the common people do not have sufficient means to pay the amounts demanded by such corrupt officers. Many unscrupulous agents and builders take undue advantage of this by forcing people to sell their properties at throwaway prices. In order to ensure transparency and accountability, the Watchdog Foundation suggested maintaining an information board at the gate of the survey office which can guide the common people with changes in land records. For instance, certificates required for transfer of property, the fees and approximate timeline etc. It will facilitate timely and cost-effective transfers for the common man. When we tried to contact the concerned officer, he told us that many fake RTIs are filed daily and it is difficult to handle all of them.

fter having taken the BMC additional municipal commissioner on a bumpy ride through the potholed roads of the city last monsoon season, an exasperated Mumbai city Guardian Minister Jayant Patil decided not to repeat it this year. Interacting with the media here yesterday, Patil sarcastically said, “It seems like the entire world’s rainfall is happening in Mumbai city alone”. The NCP minister stated that it was expected of the BMC administration to take corrective measures. Patil remarked, “The BMC ought to take some basic administrative decisions of ensuring minimum potholes during the monsoons. They need to change their attitude in tackling the issue. fter Defence Minister A.K. Antony, BJP leader Gopinath Munde is now under fire for his remarks on the LoC killings. Munde yesterday said that the Indian soldiers were attacked by terrorists. His statement has created flutter in the political circle and the NCP has demanded an apology from the BJP leader. For the last two days, the BJP has been creating a hue and cry across the nation condemning Antony’s remark that terrorists were involved in the attack on the LOC. Under sustained attack from the opposition, the Defence Minister retracted and squarely blamed the Pakistan Army for the brutal attack. Munde, who paid tribute to the LoC martyr Kundlik Mane in Kolhapur yesterday morning, repeated what Antony had

Gopinath Munde earlier said. Speaking to reporters, the state NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said, “With his remarks, Munde is defending Pakistan. He should apologise to the entire nation. The BJP came down heavily on Antony for the same remarks. Now what does the party have to say for the statement of their own leader? Vishwanath Salian | ADC

But the tumour led to a medical condition called Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) and the moment DIC set in, we informed the family. ore than a month after the 45-year-old Femida Merchant committed suicide by hanging herself in her apartment in Kashimira, the police have registered a case against her husband Minhaz Abdullah Merchant (50) and 17-yearold daughter (name withheld as she is a minor) for abetting suicide. This came after Femida’s son Ali Raza (19), in his complaint to the police, stated that his mother was a victim of physical and mental torture by both his father and

younger sister. According to the police, Femida had committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling in the bedroom of her apartment in Green Wood Society located in the Hatkesh area of Kashimira on the afternoon of July 7. Post-mortem reports revealed that it was a clear case of suicide as death was caused due to asphyxia, prompting the police to register a case of suicidal death. However, Ali Raza, who had gone into a state of depression after his mother’s death, approached the Kashimira police on

Radiant Cash Management Services, which was robbed, is located in sector 7 and offers a range of services in the Cash Management arena. Cash transactions with clients happen on a regular basis here. The workers, like always, were loading the briefcase of money into the vans around 10:30 AM. “After keeping the briefcase in the sixth van, a white color Scorpio car came in and there were a group of five dacoits inside it carrying weapons. They immediately threw red chilli powder into

the eyes of the workers”, informed K.M. Photke, Investigation Officer, Kharghar police station. He added, “One of the dacoits hit one person’s head with a hockey stick, pulled the briefcase from him and fled the spot. All the police stations were immediately informed of the robbery and the security was tightened across Kharghar. Owing to the traffic near Kopra village, we could manage to catch the dacoits, but they hit the police officials and the common public and escaped from there as well”. “The investigation is on and the dacoits will soon be identified and taken into custody”, said Photke.

he Nagpada police have arrested two extortionists for blackmailing a steel trader for carrying out water-proofing work at his shop. Two other accomplices however are absconding. According to the Nagpada police, Abdul Majid Choudhary (46), a resident of Vivek Apartment in Vihar Darshan Society in Santacruz East, owns a shop No.121, Haji Shahadat & Sons at Chhota Sonapur, Lokhand Bazar in Mohammad Ali Road, Nagpada, from steel rod are traded. One and half years ago, when Choudhary was carrying out water-proofing work at his shop, Iqbal Anjum, Mehmood Hasan Hakimi and Shadab Haider Mohd Sayeed Shaikh approached him and demanded an amount of Rs.5 lakh otherwise they would lodge a complaint with the BMC commissioner. Choudhary gave them Rs.25,000 to settle the matter. Of these three extortionists, Mohammad Hasan Hakimi claims to be from the IPS and some big political persons are reportedly handin-gloves, say sources. Recently again on July 4, when Choudhary was again doing water-proofing work at

his shop, the trio complained to the BMC after which some civic officials started harassing Choudhary. This time the demand was for Rs.1 lakh, but the matter was eventually settled for Rs.75,000. When, on the following day, Choudhary could not go to the shop due to ill-health, a furious Shadab Shaikh called Choudhary and allegedly threatened him that he would have to face harassment by civic officials. Choudhary immediately lodged an FIR at the Nagpada police station, and the police

laid a trap and caught Shadab Shaikh and Rakesh Prabhakar Dolas red-handed as they were accepting Rs.75,000 from Choudhary. However, Shadab’s other two accomplices Iqbal Anjum and Mohammad Hakimi remain absconding. The investigating officer PSI Vaibhav Markand said, “We have arrested both the accused under sections 384 (extortion), 451 (trespass) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC. Further investigation is on to nab their two absconding accomplices.”

Ponder awhile… “Power does not corrupt men; fools, however, if they get into a position of power, corrupt power.” — George Bernard Shaw

Turning white into A black operation T

HE injustice meted out to IAS officer Durga Sakthi Nagpal shows the governments in the country have the required know-how to turn white into black. An innocent and brave officer who took on the sand mafia in Uttar Pradesh had to face false charges against her. It was said she had demolished a wall built by Muslims around a masjid. She was not the culprit who ordered the pulling down of the wall. The villagers, the tehsildar himself said Durga had not ordered the pulling down of the wall. The Samajwadi Party which rules the state charged Durga with causing communal tension. One of the party’s leaders said that it was drastically possible that a Babri Masjid situation would develop! The government bent all rules and invented false charges against her. A huge effort was made to show an honest officer dishonest. All sorts of unconvincing charges were made against her. It was said she was inefficient and was playing a game of her own. What was most amazing was that even when there was no proof, they continued to claim, she was guilty. It is possible that an enquiry will show clearly that she is not guilty and that as an honest officer, she was only doing her duty. What is surprising is that the government is not bothered at all about the huge support Durga has got from the Indian IAS officers’ association and the people of this country. Perhaps the UP government was worried only by any action the Centre would take. The minority UPA government which wants the Samajwadi Party support in Parliament has apparently decided not to take any effective action over the issue.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, AUGUST 9, 2013

MARTYA SEN is a Nobel Laureate, and an Indian one–that one can be proud of. When the NDA was in power, it also bestowed on him India’s highest state honour, the Bharat Ratna; and quite appropriately too. With two such distinctions to his credit, one expected Sen to be more tactful and situation-conscious. In that, sadly, he has noticeably failed. Where politics is concerned, one expects a certain circumspection and maturity from a Bharat Ratna, not to speak of responsibility. In criticising Narendra Modi, he failed totally. To say, as Sen did, that he has every right to express his views in a democracy is stating the obvious. But what Sen forgot is the fact that in certain circumstances wisdom should dictate that silence is the better part of valour. His condemnation of Modi was needless. It is evident that Sen has no conception whatsoever of the communal history of Gujarat. By his remarks about Modi, Sen reduced his stature and worse still, aroused a futile controversy. He was consciously or unconsciously playing to the Congress gallery and turned out to be bad in theory and damaging in practice. A Bharat Ratna should stay away from controversies. Sen got embroiled in a shameful controversy of his own making.

responsibility behoving a Bharat Ratna. Hopefully, the entire episode will be quickly forgotten. At this point, perhaps I am permitted to make one suggestion to Sen. Sir, kindly read up on a book that has just been published entitled The Man of The Moment: Narendra Modi to know something of what has transpired in Gujarat in the past years. Don’t get led by the anti-Modi stories propagated by our sinful secularists who have no concept of history, much less a respect for truth. In the past few years, the media–I am largely referring to the English media and TV channels – has failed to exercise a sense of responsibility that can only be attributed to TRP consciousness.

‘Sen can’t ignore statistics’

M.V. Kamath

Understandably, he was called to order by Piyush Goyal in The Economic Times (July 24). Goyal, let it be said in all fairness, is National Treasurer of the BJP, besides being an MP. In the course of running down Modi, Sen preferred to forget many things. As Goyal, for example, remarked, “Can Sen ignore data from the Director General for Employment and Training? A good 80 per cent of employment exchange jobs were created in Gujarat. The Labour Bureau of India says Gujarat has the lowest unemployment rate in India at one per cent. Gujarat and Chattisgarh are models of computerised PPS. These BJP states have devised a food security system that has been praised from courts monitoring public policy, from the Planning Commission and the World Bank”, and so on. The controversy could have been avoided had Sen shown some diplomacy to tell his interviewer who, of course, was provoking him, that it would be inappropriate for him to comment on the current affairs. Sadly, he didn’t realise that as much as he has certain rights, these must be over-ruled by a greater sense of

Take, for example, the controversy that was raised over a point made by Modi about feeling pained when a puppy is run over by a vehicle in which he is travelling, and that he similarly feels painful after watching human tragedies. The analogy was done in good faith. The media deliberately and with calculated intent gave it a sinister connotation. As The Free Press Journal (July 15) noted, “the anti-Modi megaphones on television and the secular entrepreneurs were quick to seize the ‘puppy’ analogy to allege that he had compared Muslims with ‘puppies’, which sounds more abusive when spoken in Hindi. Noting that the very suggestion was “preposterous”, the paper said, “It is the by-product of a poisoned mindset, which is determined to demonise the Gujarat Chief Minister as an evil incarnate. One pities the understanding of the news TV anchors and the usual megaphones of the so-called secularist parties.” The editorial needs to be printed in gold, such is its relevance. Among other things it said, “Modi’s alleged communal world-view is hammered

nightly on television with the sole objective of pushing the rampant corruption, criminality and non-governance of the UPA. Dividing the people on religious grounds, frightening the minorities into believing that Modi would gobble them up, was a crude game the Congress-led secularists were playing with the sole objective of reversing the strong anti-incumbency tornado blowing in the country and which is set to sweep them out of power. Therefore, the malign Modi Project must become the leitmotif of the Congress’s poll campaign. For they have no wares of their own to sell, their record in power being so corrupt and so incompetent that they seek to turn Modi into the epitome of Evil with a capital E?

Modi critics mostly from media

MEDIAWATCH

The critics of Modi as is well-known, come from various sources, most notably the media. The Hindu (July 11) carried a tirade against Modi by Prasar Bharati chairperson Mrinal Pande to which a sharp reply was given by Venkat Goli, founder of Yudofud, a conservative public strategy think tank. If Pande had read Atmaram Kulkarni’s biography of Shankarsinh Vaghela Portrait of a Charismatic Leader, she might have been more lenient, perhaps of Modi. But that is too much to expect from secularists. In his reply to Pande’s piece on Modi, Goli made it clear that it was not Modi who started the 2002 riots and that it must be remembered that the riots caused a “loss of both Hindu and Muslim lives”. Has Pande heard of the term sub-judice, asked Goli, adding that “if the highest court of our land finds Modi guilty of abetting violence then he will be punished”, and Modi wasn’t punished. So, asked Goli, “Should we not trust our own institutions to stand up to the challenges? Goli is wasting his time. Modi-haters will refuse to listen to the truth, no matter how obvious it is. As for the UPA government, said Goli, truthfully, “The Indian government, by not protesting against the refusal of the USA to grant Modi a visa, has not only undermined the judicial process in our own land and weakened our judicial institutions but also weakened our democracy”. But Modi-haters can’t be expected to stand up for democracy when hating Modi is the be-all and end-all of their very existence. They are an unteachable lot.

e’re always chasing some dream or the other but have you ever thought about living life without any expectations, goals or targets? Take a step back from the rat race and spend a little time considering the prospect as that’s exactly what artist Lambodar Naik did. Realising that people spend too much time chasing their goals and failing to see the small miracles of daily life, he spent his creative energy trying to help us see beyond that. His show titled Life Without Targets, imbibes the philosophy of never having any goals. The artist credits his work to his fight to live life after being diagnosed with Deep Vein Thrombosis when he was just 11. Influenced both by the beauty of little things and the workings of Hinduism that he saw and was part of while growing up in Orissa, he has artwork depicting the Kumbh Mela in a surprisingly different light. He was also part of the Theospohical Society that fought for the Indian Freedom Society and the first forum to fight for Women’s Education. He tells us, “The Theosophical Society taught me about the great masters of wisdom, their lives and teachings. This soul searching and self study helped me in delving deep in to my creative insights which actually became the cause for the unfolding and flowing of my individuality as an artist.” When August 13 – 19 Where Art Gallery- 3, Jehangir Art Gallery, Kala Ghoda Contact 22843989

Pause is my way of saying, stop and embrace the moment! There

>> JH Bevels is as luxurious as the name suggests. The interiors and service are on par with one another and it’s worth the experience

F

rom the beautiful glass façade outside to the spacious interiors, JH Bevels channels luxury. If HairXpresso (another of Jawed Habib’s brands) is about quick and low-cost haircuts, JH Bevels is at the other end of the spectrum. They offer luxury treatments for skin, nails, feet and hair. JH Bevels prides themselves on their Alchemy section, a small cubicle where they check and diagnose your scalp and hair. Once the diagnosis reveals the problem(s), they draw up a customised treatment plan across 4-5 sittings. The treatments are clinical in nature and so, would last for 5-6 months at the least. However, their skin and nail treatments are more aesthetic than clinical. After studying my skin, the specialist recommended I go in for a sitting of the AntiAcne treatment (`1,250 per sitting). I liked the fact that even though the manager told me that the Sea Escape Gentleman Facial was a must-have treatment, they recommended a different one which was specifically suited for my skin — honest recommendations by salon staff are a big plus in my book. The anti-acne treatment lasted for around an hour and included a face clean up followed by the application of anti-acne and skin bighting creams. The penultimate step sounded scary: electric zit-zapper that uses electric pulses to destroy bacteria from your pores; but don’t worry; it is not even as painful as a pinprick. It was followed by a natural, fruit-based face mask and finally, a blackhead removal tool (again, not painful and only for surface acne). The treatment also had a twominute, relaxing head massage that was pure heaven. The actual anti-acne treatment needs three sittings, but I noticed the effects after just one. Since the treatment five days ago, there have been no new breakouts, oil formation on my T-zone has reduced and overall, I am satisfied with the treatment. Next was a haircut which was so quick, I was worried about whether my stylist was really interested in cutting my hair. However, the results left me spellbound. I loved the cut and the way he styled my hair… call me vain, but for me, it really stood out. Overall, JH Bevels is an indulgence that is worth the price The staff is friendly, professional and well-trained. I am looking forward to their upcoming outlets in Colaba and Kandivali. De-stress without Disrobing

With a reputable position in the market, Tejasvi Desai finds out if Nalini of Nalini & Yasmin’s new spa section lives up to the brand name

>> Even with the slightly salon-like feel, the de-stress massage at Nalini & Yasmin is a good experience

Although a spa and beauty section, this new addition at Nalini of Nalini & Yasmin, still had a slight salon-like feel to it. I was greeted by cheerful faces as they whisked me away for a de-stress massage to their new spa section, which was serene and tastefully decorated keeping the Indian Ayurveda theme in mind. The massage room was small compared to the setup of other spas in the city but it was complete with all the necessities. I was waiting to be provided with a change of clothes so we could get started but I was told there was no need for that. The de-stress massage offered at Nalini ncludes a scalp, neck, shoulder, hand and foot massage done with special aroma and homeopathic oils. One therapist started with the scalp and

neck while the other one simultaneously worked my feet. The therapists were adept and knew exactly what pressure points to target. The only sounds that punctured the tranquility were the cracking of my back and gasps of pain mingled with relief as she unknotted different parts of my body. I was trying to keep track of the foot massage too but gave in ultimately to the wonderful respite I was getting and just surrendered myself to Where Nalini of Nalini & Yasmin, 202/203 Sagar Fortune, Waterfield Road, Bandra (W) Contact 6668 0089 Cost `1,500 (exclusive of tax) Duration 50 minutes

the experience. The massage culminated in a relaxing oil massage for the scalp where homeopathic hair oil to reduce hair fall and herbal hair tonic to combat dandruff was used. The techniques used were Indian and the warmth and dedication of the therapists was reflected in the results. You might not think that you are stressed enough to get a de-stress massage but you are sure to change your mind once you get one! The massage lasted for 50 minutes but unlike normal spa treatments where it’s more about the pampering rather than long lasting effect, I could feel the difference for days after. It’s quick, convenient but above all effective. Drop in after a busy day at work and you will be all set to tackle the rest of the week.

Y

ou may think you have impeccable table manners because you keep your elbows off the dining table, hold your fork in your left hand and your knife in your right and request your dining companion to pass the salt when you need it. However, things can get quite tricky when you visit another country. For instance, in Japan, if you stick your chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice, you might remind the Japanese man next to you about a loved one’s funeral. And, order a cappuccino in Italy after 3pm and the waiter will instantly recognise that you are a tourist. We tell you more about some bizarre food etiquette from different parts of the world.

Best to avoiD forks in thailanD If you’ve ordered a dish that has rice in it, you can use your fork only to help slide the food onto the spoon and not to eat from it. Also, there are some dishes that are to be eaten only with your hands. If you come across a dish that has sticky rice, you can’t eat it with a spoon, you can only use your hands. A fork can only be used if there is a separate item that you order which has no rice in it. Apart from their aversion to forks, it’ll be considered an insult to their traditional meals if you try to eat them with the help of chopsticks.

never stiCk your ChopstiCks upriGht in Japan If you want to rest your chopsticks in between bites, it should be placed right in front of you, parallel to the edge of the table and nowhere else. Also, never make the mistake of sticking your chopsticks upright in the bowl as that might remind your

>> Rest chopsticks in front of you and not upright when you visit Japan

>> In Thailand, use a spoon to eat rice instead of a fork

DROP YOUR FORK! Don’t be surprised if you hear this statement while chomping on your rice in Thailand. Priyanka Singh brings you the reasoning behind this and other bizarre food etiquette from across the globe

Gulp your wine in GeorGia If you sip your wine in Gerogia, you’re doing it wrong. Wines here are only supposed to be drunk at toasts. When the opportunity does arise, you need to gulp your wine down in one go!

Don’t eat with your left hanD in inDia When the topic of bizarre traditions comes up, how can India be far behind? In several Hindu households, especially in South India, you cannot eat with your left hand. Why? That’s because in India you clean your posterior with your left hand after answering Mother Nature’s call, which makes your left hand dirty. But what if you are left handed? Then you need to eat at these functions with your

left hand. As long as one hand is considered dirty, all is well here.

Don’t flip the fish in China With most fish dishes, after we are done eating one side of the fish, the normal thing to do is to flip the fish over and eat the other side. But in China, especially the southern parts and Hong Kong, flipping the fish means you’re inviting bad luck. Superstitious people will leave the back of the fish untouched. But, if that seems taking it too far for you, then you can pull off the bone and then eat the flesh from the bottom without a hitch.

fellow Japanese diners about a loved one’s funeral. During a funeral ceremony in Japan, a bowl of rice belonging to the person who has passed away is kept before the coffin, with the chopsticks upright, held stiff by the rice in the bowl. We also suggest that you learn how to eat with chopsticks before visiting Japan because you will generally be rewarded with frowns if you ask for a fork.

no CappuCCino after noon in italy There is no cryptic or traditional reasoning behind this but some Italians believe that a cappuccino had late in the day can upset your tummy. So, in most Italian restaurants, you will never find an Italian ordering the foamy coffee after 3pm and never after an elaborate meal. If you do order a cup,

everyone around you would know that you are a typically ignorant tourist. Still need your dose of caffeine? No worries, an espresso works fine no matter the time.

never mix your voDka in russia >> Avoid ordering a cup of cappuccino after 3pm when you visit Italy

In Russia, you must drink your vodka neat. Not even ice accompanies the drink because it is believed that it mars the purity of vodka. Another tradition is when someone offers you vodka, you can’t refuse as it’s considered extremely rude.

Hrithik Roshan back as super hero in Krrish 3! We had the good fortune of viewing the first look of the most eagerly anticipated film of this year Krrish 3 at a suburban multiplex where the main cast along with Hrithik and his director father was present. Anil Kapoor emceed the show. ADC’s Sandeep Hattangadi spoke to Hrithik about his forthcoming super hero film.

How is your health now? I am fully fit. The operation was successful and I am raring to go.

The promos look very good. Yes. We have worked hard on the film for three years and my Dad has slogged like anything to make a Hollywood film akin to the Avengers franchise and the Iron Man or Superman franchise. Even I have tried hard to play the three main characters of the previous franchises but the result has come out very well with the special effects being mind-blowing. Reportedly, you wanted to play the negative role of Kaal which Viveik Oberoi is playing now? Yes. It’s true but I was not allowed and the only name that came forward to play the role was of Viveik Oberoi and he has done a fantastic job. I really envy him.

other co-stars? Priyanka Chopra plays my love interest and Kangana Ranaut plays a negative role of a mutant blessed with super powers and she has done a wonderful job.

What about the music? My uncle Rajesh Roshan has composed a fantastic score.

Who are your superheroes? My father who has gone through a lot and my sister Sunaina Roshan who has successfully fought cancer and has come back stronger. We wish Hrithik success in his endeavours.

MONG the new crop of young actors, Shadab Kamal, who has no filmy background, has impressed both audiences and critics with his raw orgy of histrionic talent in last week’s Hindi release B.A. Pass. The debuting actor has been paired opposite seasoned actress Shilpa Shukla (remember the spunky hockey-player in Chak De who unzips her sports wind-cheater to spite SRK’s coach character?) who plays the hi-society seductive promiscuous

Both of us were included in two different pairs. But, incidentally, both of our partners were unavailable at the last moment. The organisers were in a quandry. UANGZHOU, CHINA: Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal rallied from a game down to beat Thailand's Porntip Buranaprasertsuk and enter the quarterfinals of the BWF World Badminton Championships here. Saina, seeded third in the event, beat 15th seed Buranaprasertsuk 18-21 21-16 21-14 in a clash which lasted 52 minutes. With this win, Saina also kept her all-win record against Buranaprasertsuk intact, having beaten her in their five previous encounters before Thursday. Saina's most recent win against Buranaprasertsuk came last year

IN BRIEF Dhoni to promote EPL in India

NEW DELHI: Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni would be seen promoting his second love soccer on STAR Sports after being roped in as the brand ambassador of the upcoming Barclays English Premier League in India. "A keen soccer enthusiast and a Manchester United fan, MS Dhoni will invite all sports fans to 'Join the Game' in a clutter breaking integrated marketing campaign which will be launched early next week. The campaign will have a strong on-air and digital media thrust," the channel said in a release. The campaign has renditions of how Dhoni is always missing from action and is glued to the TV sets watching BPL every weekend while his family and friends run around looking for him.

during the Thailand Open. Saina will next take on the winner of other prequarterfinal match between Sayaka Takahashi of Japan and Korea's Yeon Ju Bae, who has been seeded 13th in the event. Buranaprasertsuk started off strongly today and surprised the Indian with better command over smash winners, sending down 11 of them in the first game. But Saina regained her composure pretty quickly and roared back in the second game with nine of her trademark smash winners. She kept up the pressure in the deciding game as well to emerge triumphant after the initial scare.

Now behave son, Bedi to Monty Panesar

NEW DELHI: Indian spin legend Bishan Singh Bedi, who mentored Monty Panesar at the beginning of his international career, called on the England spinner to "behave" after being fined for urinating on a nightclub's bouncers in an inebriated state. "Very naughty MontyP!Never thoght U'd b so originaly adventuresome!I'd pardon yur 1st attempt at rediscovereing yurself Monty! Now behave Son!," tweeted Bedi, who had offered Panesar advice and guidance during his maiden tour of India in 2007. Bedi had described Panesar as an excellent student of the game at that time. The latest incident happened at a nightclub in Brighton on Monday, just hours before England retained the Ashes at Old Trafford by drawing the third Test for which Panesar was included in the 14-man squad but not named in the playing XI. The 31-year-old left-arm spinner had been partying at the Shooshh club on Brighton's beachfront, which was hosting a Gay Pride event. However, when a group of women complained he was hassling them, Panesar was asked to leave, the tabloid 'Sun' reported.

NEW DELHI: The Sports Ministry has approved additional funds for the construction of an outdoor hall in the Imphal-based Regional Boxing Foundation being run by London Olympics bronzemedallist and five-time world champion woman pugilist M C Mar y Kom. "The Executive Committee (EC) of National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) has decided to give in-principle approval for additional financial assistance for construction of an Outdoor Boxing Hall at the Mary Kom Regional Boxing Foundation, Imphal," the ministry said in a statement. "Further action on the proposal would be taken after getting required details/clarifications from the Foundation," it added.

Tests set by the 19th century teams of 1885-88. Former Australia captain Allan Border said it looked like the tourists had "drawn their own line in the sand", in much the same way his side did during the 1986/87 series, where, having lost the Ashes, they won the final Test in Sydney before starting 16 years of unbroken series dominance against England in 1989. "England are worried," Border said. "The way this side is going over the next few months, look out. Australia has the momentum." Then again, Australia had even more "momentum" during the 2010/11 Ashes after winning the third Test by 267 runs in Perth to level at 1-1. Yet England won the fourth Test in Melbourne by the huge margin of an innings and 157 runs to retain the Ashes. Australia coach Darren Lehmann put the Old Trafford draw in context by saying: "We're not going to lose five nil, so that's a start. I think it (the momentum) has shifted but only time will tell that won't it?"

Narsee holds fort against Campion Azad Shrivastav | ADC

HESTER-LE-STREET, ENGLAND: England will bid to complete the second half of their Ashes mission when they face arch-rivals Australia in the fourth Test at Chester-le-Street starting today. The drawn third Test at Old Trafford left England an unassailable 2-0 up in the series with two to play and meant they'd retained the Ashes. But it left open the possibility of a shared series, something that hasn't happened in an Ashes campaign since 1972. It took England just 14 days to hold on to the urn this time around -- the quickest they've settled an Ashes series in their favour since the end of the Second World War. However, England coach Andy Flower was far from satisfied. "I suppose it is (a great achievement). But for me it's all about winning this series, so it is still alive with two Tests to go," he said. In Manchester, Australia produced a much-improved performance with England collapsing to 27 for three on Mon-

BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS: West Indies cricket legend Desmond Haynes has compared T20 star Kieron Pollard with Mahendra Singh Dhoni, saying the former's captaincy reminds him of India's World Cupwinning skipper. Haynes feels Pollard's reading of the game and calmness in tough situations is similar to Dhoni. "I was one of the men who supported the idea of Pollard being Barbados Tridents captain," said Haynes, head coach of the Barbados Tridents, one of six teams participating in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). "I have seen him before during my short stints with the West Indies cricket team and I always thought that this was one guy who understands the game of cricket. Now that he is captain of the Barbados Tridents and we are working closely together I have gotten even more respect for him. Pollard reminds me a lot of Dhoni," Haynes was quoted as saying in West Indies media.
