wo days after Falguni Pathak’s dandiya mandal in Ghatkopar made news for violating decibel limits, another mandal, also in Ghatkopar, stage-managed by Congress party worker Praveen Chheda, is in the news for illegally collecting parking charges from those parking their vehicles on a public road.

WILD CAT SCARES VASAI

ess than a week after being spotted twice near a residential complex in Vasai, another leopard made a silent comeback late on Monday.

This time, the big wild cat intruded into the Evershine Garden area, pounced on a bunch of ducks and disappeared after carrying one of them off into the dense tracts of a mangrove land near the salt-pans along the VasaiNalasopara Link Road.

Although the leopard left without harming any human being, fear continues to stalk locals who have decided to be cautious. “We have informed the fire brigade personnel who arrived at the spot in no time, but the leopard had vanished before they arrived”, said a local resident Sudip Mehta.

enior Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai expressed his satisfaction over the Bombay High Court ruling on allowing its annual traditional Dusshera rally to be held at Shivaji Park, Dadar.

However, this year, the rally will be an acid test for Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray as it will be the first rally that he will be addressing after the demise of his father, Bal Thackeray.

Desai also disclosed that it was BMC Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte who had stated last year that the BMC would construct a memorial for the late Sena chief at Shivaji Park before his death anniversary.

he BMC has framed certain guidelines on the use of playgrounds and recreational grounds in the city. It would not permit any political rally or function on civic grounds. A circular on the decision was issued on April 19. It states: The grounds can be used only for playing and sporting activities.

Apart from that, they can be used for traditional, religious purposes such as events like Ganeshostav, Navratri and Durga Puja, for not more than 30 days including erecting and dismantling of pandals.

They can also be used for rallies and events on May 1 (Maharashtra Day), January 26 (Republic Day) and August 15 (Independence Day), days that exempt Shivaji Park, too, from ‘silence zone’ norms.

These sugar mills were supposedly sold to politicians at dirt cheap rates.

I

t was a pleasant surprise for the audience, when 34 participants from across all states and Union Territories stood tall with their projects on issues and challenges regarding water co-operation. The year 2013, being assumed as the ‘International Year of World Water Co-operation’, the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), had organized a programme on ‘The National Science Seminar’, amongst which the state of Odisha stood as the overall champion at the event.

The NCSM conducts the National Science seminar every four years, with a theme which relates to the human sciences. The aim of the seminar being the creation of a platform to encourage young students to research, synthesize information and present their views like experts, the seminar is conducted in each city, district, state and union territories at various levels.

Amongst these, 34 students representing each union territory and state are short-listed as the finalists. These finalists compete against each other in

GRP notices to Rlys, Octroi Dept Bizman has evaded Octroi duty worth `100 crore

n Tuesday, the Government Railway Police (GRP) has issued notices to the Railway department and to the Octroi duty department for unaccounted goods with respect to businessmen who have evaded Octroi duty worth Rs.100 crore.

On Monday, the GRP at Mumbai Central came to know about 835 packets of a consignment that were passed off without paying any Octroi duty.

Rajendra Trivedi, Senior Police Inspector, GRP, Mumbai Central said, “A consignment of 25 packets was received at Mumbai Central at 1 pm. We questioned a few men dealing with the concerned parties and found out that a total of 860 packets were involved and the Octroi was paid only for 25 packets. The total goods were worth Rs.18,00,000. The consignment of 25 packets was seized by the GRP, Mumbai Central. “During the last nine months, around Rs.100 crore of Octroi money has been evaded by various business parties. We have issued notices to the Railway department and the Octroi department regarding the same”, said Trivedi.

Blaze at godown in Masjid Bunder

major fire was reported at a godown of National Transport at Thana Street in Masjid Bunder, late on Tuesday evening.

The fire reportedly occurred at 9.15 p.m., according to locals. At least 12 fire tenders along with six water

tankers, three ambulances, three special vans were rushed to control the blaze.

"We are still finding out the reasons for the fire. However, the operation is still on to extinguish it. There are no casualties as it happened in the night and there was no one inside the godown," said a fire official.

Rape convict out on bail, murdered, found in gunny bag near garbage bin; identified from finger prints; case registered

30-year-old, who was arrested by Kurar Police and convicted in a rape case, was found murdered near Ankur Building at Link road in Prem Nagar locality early morning on Tuesday. The victim was brutally murdered with a sharp weapon and an old revenge is supposed to have led to the murder.

Meanwhile, in 2003, accused Abdul Hussain Chowdhary was arrested by Kurar Police for allegedly raping the girl in his locality after kidnapping her. He was con-

victed and sent to jail for eight years, but in 2012 when he came out of jail, he disappeared and on Tuesday was found murdered with multiple injury marks.

ith the arrest of two persons, the Thane (rural) police have claimed to have solved the murder of a 25year-old man whose body was recovered from a secluded spot in the Santosh Bhavan area of Nalasopara (East) on Saturday.

The crime was a fall-out of a petty monetary dispute between the deceased and his close friends, said the police.

A highly decomposed body was recovered by the police behind an industrial unit in Valai-Pada on Saturday morning. The identity of the deceased was ascertained as Santosh Saha (25). Investigations led to the detention of two suspects identified as Umesh Jadhav (21) and Lahu Chauhan (18) who shared a rented accommodation with the deceased. After rounds of sustained interrogation, the duo confessed to the crime.

In their statement to the police the duo said that they had stole Saha’s ATM card and withdrew Rs.4200 from his account. “Since they shared a good relationship, Saha would often take both the accused to withdraw money. They soon came to know his password and they stole his card,” said a cop.

Saha, who learned of the theft committed by his room mates, started asking for his money back. Irate over his constant pestering, the duo hatched a conspiracy to eliminate Saha and under pretext of giving him back his money, took him to a secluded spot and beat him to death.

To ensure that he was dead, the duo also strangulated him with a nylon rope, wrapped his body in a bedsheet and dumped it. A case under Sections 302, 201 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the duo who has been remanded to police custody till October 11.

MRCC concerned over party’s decreasing presence in BMC

considerable decrease in the Congress party’s presence and performance in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in the present term has raised concerns in the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC). In view of the upcoming general parliamentary elections, the MRCC is training its councillors in the BMC. MNS, with just 28 councillors out of total 227, is playing a significant role as opposition in the BMC and has even eclipsed the actual opposition parties – Congress and Nationalist Congress

Party (NCP) with a total strength of 65 councillors (52 Congress +13 NCP).

Even further, leader of opposition in the BMC and Congress councillor Dnyanraj Nikam has been absent since the last couple of months reportedly owing to illness. Shiv Sena is going on a rampage in the debate and planning in the corporation house.

HE UPA government resisted pressure for a long while and refused to concede the demand for a separate state.

It knew evidently there would be disastrous consequences if Andhra was divided. Finally, it sounded leaders of other political parties and allegedly got a nod for separate state.

Following the announcement of a separate state, a violent chaotic situation has arisen. Two leaders of political parties – TDP and YSR Congress – have gone back on their decision and started fast unto death. During the last few days, there have been strikes and normal life has come to a standstill. There is no power in Andhra since thousands of workers have joined the strike. Transport has been dislocated and trains have been stopped.

All over Andhra, there are likely to be large-scale disturbances. In Telangana, there are many migrants from Seemandhra and this shows that an explosive situation could develop there.

For the next ten years, when Telangana and Seemandhra can share Hyderabad as the capital there could be continuing trouble.

There is now talk of imposing President Rule in Andhra. The pertinent question is whether this move will produce the desired results. There is however a glimmer of hope that the situation might improve. What has happened in the last few days has shown the gravity of the situation in all parts of Andhra. It is absolutely necessary that damage control measures must be taken without delay.

When there was so much opposition to the division of Andhra, why did the UPA government agree to take the hasty step? It is being said that 2014 poll considerations made the UPA government concede to the demand for Telangana.

HE drama over the ordinance to protect criminal politicians is redefining the relationship between President Pranab Mukherjee, the Manmohan Singh government and the Congress party. After Mukherjee indicated his unwillingness to sign on the dotted line, the party and government he used to serve have realised, perhaps for the first time, that the equation has changed. This is no longer their Pranabda, troubleshooter, problem solver and general dogsbody. He now stands above them as the keeper and defender of the Constitution. And he is determined to be remembered as a “copybook” President who never put a foot wrong. It has also dawned on the Congress that he will play a critical role should the 2014 polls throw up a fractured verdict that could complicate the formation of the next government. The message from the high command, therefore, is: watch your step with Rashtrapati Bhavan.

According to sources familiar with the discussion that took place at the core committee meeting that decided to withdraw both the controversial ordinance and the bill, Sonia Gandhi advised the government to be cautious when dealing with the President.

She suggested that the PM informally consult the President whenever a decision involved taking his consent. It would be unwise, she stressed, to take Rashtrapati Bhavan for granted.

Sonia’s advice comes after Mukherjee rapped the three ministers he met on the ordinance issue. He is believed to have expressed regret that although the controversial ordinance required his assent, he was not sounded out before the Cabinet went ahead with its decision. After all, his credibility too was at stake here, he said, reminding the ministers that while he does not want a confrontation with the government, he believes in going by the book. In other words, every decision he takes would have to pass the test of being constitutionally sound.

Interestingly, Sonia is believed to have conveyed similar advice to finance minister P Chidambaram. No more pot shots, was the warning from 10 Janpath. The message went after Mukherjee expressed annoyance over Chidambaram’s statement to the Rajya Sabha in which he blamed the current economic woes on “certain decisions we took during 2009-2011”. HE universe cast its myriad of forms with an equal boatload of blueprints. Among those, humans extol its creation more distinctly than the other forms. This distinctness is not an etch of superiority over others but simply a more conspicuous silhouette, for universe delights equally in partaking of its bounty for an amoeba or an Einstein alike. So every being can be simply oneself without any antecedents. Being like others is thus impossible, though humans seem to be exalting the otiose and energy sapping hounding of becoming like someone.

Once a child asked a master, “I want to become like you. Would you chart my path for my flight to the role model?” The veneer of human form of that child suggested that it had been a witness to more than 60 years of chronological time, yet his intelligence reflected by his question stood in glaring contravention to this and seemed to have given up pace with his body decades ago! One who

wants to be like someone else has indeed chosen the beaten path which smells of excitement to begin with, but gradually erodes into lassitude and terminates in fatality.

The touchstone of intelligence and maturity is not in the academic degrees one possesses or the hefty sums of money in the bank accounts or the ranks scaled up the

Can a sparrow become a nightingale or a vulture! The labelling of a 60-plus old man as a child is not a jeer or a sniding remark, but the naked reality or illusion in the garb of it of chasing someone as culmination of one’s own self. Anything more childish than this is eluding me. The fatality of following someone else doesn’t merely lie in its stupidity but more so in the blindness of it.

It may all sound fine and comforting that someday one may succeed in becoming like someone or even steps further, but the self or the blueprint bestowed by existence for glorifying each individual in a unique way will be on the funeral pyre. One develops, matures and comes to fruition in being the self. The fruition translates into different terms of reference for every individual. The gloss of being like someone dries up one’s roots while following the self has an ease and effortlessness that goes to the marrow.

The window dressing is a barren woman bereft of poetry, music and grace, howsoever comely she may be. Life is not meant to be an imitation, but a blossom. Though the riches of the world may accompany imitation, yet the emptiness will also sneak into in even more humongous proprtions. The further one proceeds, the farther one recedes!

‘Besharam’ is a flop

In lesson one, it is ‘Point Littéraire’, where a very simple yet poignant poem by Jacques Prévert is presented. Through this poem you have what is probably your first exposure to French Litterature.

n the last article we explored the first three sections namely .1, .2 and .3 of all the four lessons.

Continuing in the same vein we will now explore sections .4, .5, .6, .7 and .8 of all the four lessons. Section .4 is the section where grammar rules are explained. In section .5 there are exercises based on the grammar that has been learnt. In section .6 simple phonetic aspects are explained. Sections .7 and .8 are aimed at providing additional information on France and help to go beyond the frame-work of the lesson.

SECTIONS .7 and .8 ARE NOT TO BE USED FOR ANY FORMAL EVALUATION. We shall now explore each section, lesson wise, starting with .4 which deals with grammar. In this section, each lesson has the conjugation of two or more new irregular verbs

In lesson two, it is ‘Point Culturel’, where the theme of the text which is the cultural richness of Provence is expanded and you learn the French National Anthem as well as a couple of things for which this region is well known, like the herbs of Provence and the perfumery of Grasse.

In lesson four, it is ‘Point International’, in keeping with the theme of this lesson which is Contemporary France. Here a few well known French institutions of International repute are presented.

In lesson one, the formation and the use of the past tense is explained. This section begins with a quick revision of the past tense of verbs conjugated with the auxiliary verb ‘avoir’ that has been done in Std IX and then proceeds with the past participles of some irregular verbs. In this lesson the past tense of verbs conjugated with ‘être’ is introduced and explained with examples.

Section .8 is devoted to Civilisation.

Lesson one which is dedicated to Normandie gives you brief glimpses into what this region has to offer and the famous writer Guy de Maupassant who was born here.

In lesson two, you learn about personal pronouns.

There is a brief explanation of subject pronouns with which you are already familiar. A quick revision of direct pronoun objects is done. Identification of indirect pronouns and replacing them with correct pronouns as well as their position in the sentence is explained with adequate examples. The use of indirect pronoun objects in a simple sentence in the affirmative, negative and interrogative form, as well as in the imperative form is explained with examples.

Furthermore their position in a sentence where the verb is in the ‘futur proche’ or ‘passé récent’ is also explained with examples.

In lesson three, you are introduced to adverbs. The function of adverbs, their formation and position in a sentence is explained with examples. Interrogative adjectives are explained in detail and the different ways they may be translated in English is also shown.

In lesson four, the use of the simple negative is revised and also how different nuances can be given to a negative sentence is explained with examples.

Section .5 is devoted to grammar and exercises.

Care has been taken to see that the exercises are graded from simple to complex. Care has also been taken to render the exercises interesting and to cover all aspects without making them repetitive or boring.

Every lesson has enough exercises to give you sufficient practice and reinforce whatever you have learnt.

Section .6 is devoted to phonetics.

In lesson one and two, intonation is explained with examples and there are exercises which are also recorded on the CD to enable you to master this aspect.

In lesson three and four, you learn about pauses.

Each language has its own rhythmic pattern and they are usually marked with a punctuation mark. Sometimes there are rhythmic groups which have pauses but which are not marked with any punctuation

Lesson two briefly covers the Camargue region.

Lesson three lists some of the modern multicultural festivals which are celebrated in almost all parts of the world.

After all the lessons you have a Table of Conjugation where verbs of different groups and the irregular verbs are conjugated. This will help you when you are studying or revising.

The final part is the glossary which is lesson wise and in alphabetical order.

This will enable you to find the meanings of new words quickly.

Many portions of the book which have been marked with an icon of a CD with the track numbers are recorded. This can be downloaded from the following website of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, www.msbshse.ac.in I have personally gone to this website and could download the CD. It is clear and well done and you should have no problem. Whenever you have the time you could listen to it. In addition to what is there in the text book, there are a few interviews with French nationals and a song.

This chapter was part of a piece written by an ex-air force officer and was included in the text book to inspire children through the story of the officer’s hard work and dedication.

One child couldn’t forget the last line of the chapter. “I also want to become a fighter pilot,” he told his parents at dinner that night. After having finished his schooling, 10+2, clearing the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam, being recommended by the AFSB (Air Force Selection Board), clearing his medicals, studying at the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, and going on to the Air Force Academy (AFA) at Hyderabad, he finally did become a fighter pilot in the Indian Air

Ganesh Chaturthi, a festival celebrated with great pomp and enthusiasm all over India, marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, mythologically called ‘vigna harta’.

Maharashtra witnesses celebrations on a gigantic scale where Ganesh mandals are created and decorated over 10 days till the time of immersion.

angaroo Kids Education and Kangaroo Kids Toddler’s Club, a leading school chain in India, organised ‘Marine Days’, an event held between October 4 and 6 at Kangaroo Kids, Malad. The objective of the event was to give students the touch and feel experience of exciting marine life and to sensitise them towards the ocean ecosystem. The activities were inspired by the life of sea creatures and ocean biology. Children from several schools across Mumbai participated and enjoyed the event. During the three-day event, marine habitat like scenes were created through puppet shows, dramatisation, music and

marine characters were depicted. In the word of one the teachers, these rooms were the knowledge mine for students.

Thousands of students from the city schools visited the event. These students were from Sunshine Preschool, JBCN, Thakur International School, Pinnacle High School, Sir J.P. High School, Billabong High School, Saylee International, Savitri Devi Agarwal School, D.G. Khetan School, and Mainadevi Bajaj School.

The wonderful way in which the reality of our political system was exposed, the anger in our youth was portrayed and the desperation that sets in as a result of bureaucracy took us all by surprise and made us wake up to our capabilities and potential.

Aamir Khan’s performance is laudable and leaves viewers with a range of emotions varying from anger to grief.

Although this movie was nominated for several awards, it was not given recognition in India and didn’t even do very well at the box office.

« ADMISSION ALERTS SCREENWRITING WORKSHOP AT ANDHERI

If you’ve always marveled at the wonders of cinema and wished you too could create compelling stories, do mark mid-October in your calendar right away. The 15th Mumbai Film Festival in association with Equinox Europe is conducting a two-day workshop on October 14 and 15 at the conference room of Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Andheri.

On the agenda are pitching, screenwriting and script development, i.e. skills to take your budding film career forward. The workshop will be conducted by the Chair of the Melbourne International Film Festival and eminent script advisor Claire Dobbin along with James Hart, producer and screen-writer having worked with some of the top studios of the world. Dobbin, who is conducting the first day’s activities has been at the heart of script writing workshops in Australia and New Zealand and has been a guest lecturer at the Abu Dhabi Film festival. As the Senior Script Executive at the Australian Film Commission (AFC), she bettered many Australian films with her touch, such as Road to Nhill, Small Treasures and Mallboy.

The second day’s writing guru has written/produced Hook, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Muppet Treasure Island, Jack and the Beanstalk: The Real Story, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life among others. ‘Never grow up, never give up’ is Hart’s way of life which comes through in the animated feature, EPIC in which he is co-writer and the Executive Producer. Beginning at 9.30 am on Monday the 14th, Claire and Jim will listen to idea pitches and give their feedback. By noon, they will delve into the world of screenwriting and script development.

Stretching till 4 pm with a lunch break in between, the session will discuss themes, concept lines, structure and characters. And of course, there’s question hour from 4.15 pm – 5:00 pm.

Day two begins with the screening of Bram Stoker’s Dracula followed by lunch. Post this, James Hart will begin ‘deconstructing Dracula’ and discuss the finer nuances of script writing. Armed with their new found knowledge, participants will get to pitch ideas once more. The whirlwind workshop will wind up at 5 pm. The workshop is open to all film writing and cinema enthusiasts.

Learning, growing and expanding on music!

Days at school were structured around lectures, ensemble workshops and studio practice labs. Being a student is a fantastic time in life.

Especially when your job as a student is to learn all you can about different fields all relating to the career I knew I wanted.

My favorite meeting and socialising places without a doubt at LAMA was the campus studio. Or throughout the many rooms set up around campus for jam sessions.

I am a vegetarian. There is no shortage of vegetarian food options in Pasadena which was great - but I ate a lot of paneer. At least once a month I would try to go to Artesia, California to Little India (Pioneer Blvd) to one of the many Indian grocery stores to stock my fridge and freezer with not just paneer but authentic Indian vegetables/pre-made frozen foods and Maggi.

I spent a lot of time around fellow musicians/artists/producers and a lot of very talented people, with very different musical styles.

The head of my department at LAMA Sean Halley had the soon-to-be-graduates in my music production department to his place the night before graduation for a congratulation/celebration barbeque. We all presented a song accompanied with a music video that we had done as part of a final project in his class - but unknown to us Sean and Andre had composed, written and produced a song and video about our class where in the lyrics they pulled out humorous traits about all of us in a really funny tribute to our time at the school. That’s one of the great things about music; lyrics can be used to evoke so many emotions; and it was a hilarious mocking tribute to us all.

At LAMA (or at least many of my teachers) have this thing where if anyone shows up late to class the teacher stops the class and starts clap-

have a true passion and love for music. I am left-handed but it does not make a difference for most instruments except my guitar which I had to get custom made. There are guitars available for left-handed people too. I play the table right handed because I was taught like that from an early age and so I graduated in Hindustani Classical Vocals and Tabla from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad (Prabhakar). I studied piano at KM Music Conservatory, Chennai (A.R. Rahman’s Institute). I am a multi instrumentalist and completed my degree in Music Production in September 2012 from Los Angeles Music Academy (LAMA), Pasadena, CA, USA, with the Presidents Roll of Honor (A Cumulative GPA of 3.60 or higher).

LAMA’s Music Production Programme is unique in that it treats music production as a skill. As a music producer in the modern world, you must know how to handle dozens of tasks that used to be handled by a number of different people. You must have a strong engineering and microphone technique, songwriting and composition, studio upkeep, interpersonal

communication skills, and strong musical computer skills.

I was pretty excited about the first day but really had no idea what to expect. We had an orientation programme for the first couple of days before classes started where we had the opportunity to meet our fellow students/teachers in a mo casual way and that really helped with the adjustment.

My professors were fantastic; all very knowledgeable in their chosen fields, friendly and extremely helpful. I built strong relationships with many of them and still keep in touch. Andre Knecht - master of all things audio technical was one of my teachers who I truly respect and has since served as an ‘advisor’ for ENZY Studios. While teachers like Sean Halley (our department chair), Andrew Murdock (Mudrock), Nikhil Korula, and Hugo Mendoza all served as teachers in the classroom. They really stand out because they were always there for help and support outside the classroom.

They all have vast experience in the industry and genuinely want to share such knowledge.

Value-based education with humane approach: need of the hour S

tudents today are lacking in the humanitarian approach and hence the value-based education is the need of the hour.

Youngsters are trapped in the criminal web of cyber crimes, consumption of drugs, liquor and other tobacco-based products.

The ones who stay away from these bad practices opt for professional education and very few go for research, said eminent physicist and Padmashri Dr. G.Venkataraman.

He was speaking at a symposium on ‘Integral Human Values Education’ organised at the Kalina Campus of the University of Mumbai on Saturday. It was organised by the Sri Sathya Sai Trust, Maharashtra and the Sri Sathya Seva Organisations, Maharashtra and Goa as part of their endeavour to bring into focus the need for integral human valuebased education in all faculties of learning. It was chaired by Venkatraman and the speakers included prominent personalities.

Venkatraman said that it raises great concern that generation next does not follow ethical values and the humane approach. Value based education is the need of the hour as the future of the country lies in their hands. Youth today is under unbearable burden of competition in their academics forcing them to trace rely heavily on book based studies. Now it is upto us- the educational institutions and universities- to make them adapt strongly to value based education.

The very definition of the word ‘producer’ changes depending on the parameters of any project so as a music producer we needed to be prepared for anything. I have studied music and know the traditional methods of working and now plan to break and/or experiment with those methods to create my own musical path.

There is tremendous scope for music lovers today in terms of education in professional studies and careers. There is an abundance of different skills and backgrounds that go into music careers. Firstly you must be sure of what you want to do and what you’re interested in doing. A career in the music field is not only about being a vocalist or guitar player; it is much more than that. Aside from professional performing musicians, people in the music industry work as producers, directors, composers, lyricists, sound engineers, DJs, RJs, live concert handling or in music related marketing, publishing, teaching/education, music therapy, journalism, hospitality and a whole lot more.

The music business is an adaptable venue for creative minds either working in conventional positions or creating new approaches to bringing music to the public. If you have passion, focus and patience anything is possible. In my case my passion for music has made me keep going closer to what I believe in doing and it also helps me want to learn more and more to be able to grow and off course the focus and patience follows. I truly believe that you can spend a lifetime, learning, growing and expanding on music. Keep working, keep practicing, and keep doing what you love.

He has very poor handwriting and one cannot read what he has written. He, however, can read what he has written. What do I do about his writing?

Writing is a process that starts early in age.

However, different students learn to write at a different pace and in different stages of development. Of all academic activities, writing demands the most rigorous integration of diverse skills (handwriting, spelling, punctuation, word retrieval, syntax, rhetoric, etc.).

Indian University curriculum should be revamped

T

he global economy, in the midst of a series of demographic and economic shift, is providing a much needed opportunity for India to capitalize on changes and grow faster. To begin with, India’s university Education should gear up and provide a strong foundation and ecosystem for the young talent in the country to realise their full potential. However, over the years, some of our universities are only transforming themselves into money-churning machines with ‘education’ largely being viewed as a ‘business’ and not related to providing value-based holistic learning.

The sad state of affairs of university education is evident from the declining quality in faculty and curricula, besides poor infrastructure and other facilities. Hundreds of institutions are closing down and only about 10 per cent of students coming out are ‘employable’ in the real sense. More importantly, very few universities (B-schools) in the country actually prepare students to become ‘entrepreneurs’, by provid-

ing ‘business excellence programs’ and making them ready with all relevant skill-sets – domain knowledge, aspiration management, IT literacy, soft-skills management, cultural literacy, expertise in other management tools, etc.

There is a need for Indian universities, hosting B-schools or not, to take a research-centric approach in imparting education and honing entrepreneurial skills of aspiring students. The course curriculum has to be revamped to suit the current business, economy and societal demands.

Entrepreneurship Education in India India, among the developing countries, is a pioneer in ‘entrepreneurship education’ programs. The founding of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) has encouraged self-employment to some extent. But, the present entrepreneurship education in the country focuses on courses similar to general business courses offered at B-schools. Some institutes and government departments are offering courses tailored for entrepreneurs. The past two decades have also witnessed the entry of industry associations, NGOs, consultants and voluntary organisations into the entrepreneurship education space.

Looking at the growing demand for such an education it provides an immense opportunity for Indian universities to offer such courses or tilt the curriculum of different streams to

include ‘entrepreneurship’ as well.

Management Education versus Entrepreneurial Education The present entrepreneurship education in India just focuses on courses which are similar to general business courses. Management is about addressing regular and known issues, whereas entrepreneurship is all about learning to deploy solutions for newer and lesser known problems.

B-Schools can still be the most appropriate nursery for shaping and developing management graduates into entrepreneurs. Among the required skill-sets, entrepreneurship education should highlight the importance of integrity and ethical standards, a deep sense of social responsibility, understanding of protection and sustainability of the environment and the improvement of the people’s quality of life. In addition, students should be made aware of the pitfalls, different taxation structure, legal implications of business models and the offerings, other clearance certificates, government investment schemes and rebates, etc., which are normally not taught at regular B-schools.

Developing Entrepreneurship Education at Universities As a provider of entrepreneurship training programs, universities must create a relevant and

supportive environment along with providing an ecosystem that could help develop an ‘enterprise culture’ among university students. By

creating an entrepreneurial culture across campuses, universities are expected to influence students’ decision to create businesses with a

considerable influential factor. Universities must invest in helping aspiring students to setup ‘start-ups’ and provide the necessary guidance and support to sustain them. Faculty should be carefully picked from the pool of entrepreneurs who are also inclined towards academic work. The student selection criteria for entrepreneurs’ courses at universities must also be through well signed procedures.

In the process of becoming a developed country, the Indian government should acknowledge the importance of entrepreneurs.

It should nurture and promote entrepreneurdevelopment by designing and framing encouraging policies. Young Indians are to be encouraged to venture out to build start-ups and intellectual properties, and in the process create wealth and significantly contribute to the country’s economy.

Universities can play a key role by acting as a breeding ground for aspiring entrepreneurs by providing innumerable research projects to work on and experience, besides creating awareness on sources of venture capital and entrepreneur career options. Skills on leadership, negotiation, product development, innovation in technology and business among others need to be an essential part of the course curriculum. Indian universities also should partner with government to set up start-up accelerators and incubators, coupled with private-sector participation, by proving sustainable business models.

How and when was the concept of Accessed born?

We first started talking about doing something in August 2012. Aditi had been interested in doing something online based on ‘city experiences’ about a year prior to that and Surekha had just attended an E-Commerce conference in Mumbai and was really interested in trying something outside of the corporate world. A one off conversation turned into several months of ideating before we decided to go full force into making our concept go live.

As young entrepreneurs how did you go about making the idea into a reality and getting finance?

We started off with a lot of research to figure out what kind of niche players already existed – we wanted to make sure that what we were doing was different from the rest.

When we were confident of exactly what we wanted our brand to represent and had all the details figured out, we started approaching brands in the city, leveraging our network as much as possible to get that first ‘in’. Simultaneously, we were working closely with our designers to turn all the images we had in our head into a live site.

Slowly everything started falling into place.

We were very clear from the start that we wanted to stay self funded for as long as possible. We were able to keep our fixed costs very low when we first started, and are now able to self sustain the business which we are really proud of.

What tips can you give students or young professionals who are on the verge of beginning their own ventures? How can they convert their idea into a success story?

Research and preparation is important, but there will never be a time where you have every single base covered. The best thing you can do is start approaching people with your concept – test the idea, get grilled a bit, learn what sort of questions/concerns your potential client will have so that you can be prepared to address those in the future.

Don’t worry about being over persistent and always stick to your instinct.

What are the future endeavours that Accessed plans to undertake?

We’re in the final stages of integrating a payment gateway so that our customers can make their purchases online.

We are also putting together an extensive plan for a Privilege Card for our members. We’re really excited about this as there are a lot of exciting twists for our members in it!

We also have something in the pipeline that will give our members access to personalities and not just experiences. There’s a lot of formulation around this but the idea is around a lecture series as well as an auction based model for one on one luncheons.

Any final words of advice for young students who want to make their ideas into profitable companies like Accessed ?

When you are younger, your appetite for risk and ability to take a risk is the highest it’ll ever be. So if you have even the craziest idea, go for it. Confidence is one of the biggest differences between a successful start up and one that doesn’t really get off the floor.

Learn the importance of networking. Never dismiss anyone.

You never know when you will be working with that person.

EuroSchools celebrate Gandhi Jayanti

EuroSchool Thane and Airoli honor the memory of Gandhiji through various activities

uroSchool, Mumbai, on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, organised various events in Mulund to spread the message of peace and harmony and non-violence against women, children, aged and the environment.

EuroSchool Airoli organised a one-hour peace march which was attended by around 1,000 parents, teachers and students. The procession was a candle-light march, adorned with banners conveying messages to bring peace and stop violence against children, women, environment and the aged. There were peace flags reading the slogans ‘Peace is achievable’, ‘Peace

Begins with me’, ‘Peace prevails within me’ etc. This commemorated the beginning of the week-long Peace Campaign which included several activities such as multifaith assemblies every morning to commemorate peace both within and among the students of diverse communities.

EuroSchool, Thane organised an activity in association with R Mall including people at the mall who gathered and participated in the activities. Students between the age group of 10-12 from grade V and VI, along with the pre-primary toddlers, sung songs, danced and acted on the theme of the

activity. The message of ‘Women give birth to civilisation, Save the Girl Child’ flashed across every corner of the Mall. Parents and the other audience wrote messages on the message wall; pledged to respect women and showed resolute solidarity to the cause of Peace through their active participation.

These activities not only spread the message of peace in the country but also educated the students about the virtues of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Gandhiji’s belief was that non-violence was the key to achieve peace in the country. The same philosophy was portrayed in all the EuroSchool activities.

FEVICOL SCIENCE PROJECT CHALLENGE 2013

Pidilite Ind, announced the Fevicol Science Project Challenge 2013. Fevicol Science Project is an annual nationwide competition that identifies talent from across the schools in the country. It encourages budding young talented children and gives them a great kick start to pursue their interest further.

This contest encourages students to think about topics that are related to their everyday life, futuristic concepts and make 3-D models of their interpretations of the subject/topic. The 3-D modeling is to promote the ‘Learning by doing’ attitude so that the young minds understand the theory as well as the actual working of the concepts. This year the challenge will begin in October 2013. The first round will require students to write a 500word concept note on the given topic which will be judged in the school itself by the Science teachers.

The Beauty and Wellness industry therefore sees a constant demand amongst the style-conscious and has opened up avenues for prospective career opportunities. We look to grade hairstyling as a niche career that is both exciting and creative.

What is hairstyling all about and what is its demand in India?

Hairstyling is about creating a look that helps a person portray their image to the world. It is an indispensable aspect in building someone’s image thus leading to one’s appearance. This is where hairstylists come in. We help you look good, and in turn, feel good. A hairstylist is therefore a craftsman, as they skillfully craft one’s hair according to his or her needs. Today, a consumer in India is like any other world consumer as they are extremely informed and aware with the power of the web and globalization. They therefore demand contemporary, fashionable and stylish hairstyles, at par with global standards. They are willing to pay for good service and are particular about hair-cuts and styles. Hair styling has gained momentum globally in the last decade, which has helped in an overall industry boom. The local clientele is also increasingly willing to experiment with newer styles that hit international runways, but a major style inspiration in the country is Bollywood led.

However, in order to gain a bigger and a better platform, I would recommend a beginner’s course in an academy of hair styling in India or abroad.

Does it involve a lot of financial investment and how long is it before one can earn a decent income?

You do not really require any strong financial investment unless you are doing a course in an academy abroad or if you have opened up a salon all by yourself. You can always learn to become a hair stylist under a company as it would take you a period of 6-12 months as a trainee depending on your ability and speed of learning. One could invest Rs. 2-3 lakhs as a one-time investment and can break even within 2-3 years.

How much can an established hair-stylist earn? What factors does this earning depend on?

It depends on what company you work for, what position you hold, and your performance. It could range from anywhere between Rs. 30,000 and Rs. 2,00,000 per month,

and sometimes even more. If your work is good and if you have a good clientele, you will definitely earn more. Also, different companies have different rewarding and appraisal systems with varying incentives.

What are the different avenues in India where a hair stylist would be in demand?

The grooming industry in India, favored by various growth factors, is booming currently and has the potential of generating a lot of jobs. So, a hair stylist could choose to work with salons, in the fashion and lifestyle industry, as consultants, as freelancers, as part of R&D, technology and training for FMCG companies under the gambit of beauty, wellness and hair grooming products. In short, the scope is plenty.

What are the advantages and the disadvantages of becoming a hair stylist?

The biggest advantage of becoming a hair stylist is that your creativity is in your own hands. Even if you do not work under a company or salon you can still be a hair stylist with merely a pair of scissors and a comb.

This creativity is in you and no one can take it away. Being a very creative job, you get to learn something new and different everyday and you grow with every experience. This is not a monotonous job by any means.

The sector of grooming in India is still largely an unorganised sector. While there are companies that are pioneering the cause of turning it into an organised sector, it will take time to change the perceptions and mindsets of people.

What is your message to those who want to pursue a career in hair styling?

I’d say, go for it! If it’s your dream then pursue it, the way I did. My teacher always said, “If you do not look good, then we do not look good.”

You are going to make people look good and you will make a difference.

Will the departure of players like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid take the charm out of next year’s IPL?

ome say that they are Atheists. Well even I am. Not exactly Atheist, but Agnostic. But according to society’s definition of God, I believe that everyone except a few unfortunate ones, have their own personal Gods who are always there to look after them, come what may. People don’t call them God, Bhagwan, Allah or WaheGuru. These personal Gods are known by names like Mom, Amma, Ma, and Aai. Sometimes none of us realise how much our mothers have sacrificed for us.

I am not saying that it is wrong. It is natural. Even our mothers did not realise their mothers’ sacrifice. Everyone is hard wired to that kind of behaviour.

Most of the times I get exasperated when she embarrasses me in front of my friends by hugging me and telling me to take care of myself, her grown up 18year-old son. But later when I think of it, I realise that the hug or kiss on the cheek is filled with sheer love and care. She wants to hug me one last time before I disappear for eight to ten hours/two to five days as she is not sure if I’ll return.

Not because I am some sort of maniac who forgets the way to his house, every other time but because of the manifold woes which have plagued the entire nation like murder, terrorism, extortion, kidnapping, harassment etc.

I am always flabbergasted when I think of the sacrifices my mother has made: staying up all night with me during my last minute study marathons before my exams, getting up an hour before me to

even a single mango. How would you feel? I bet you will encounter a mix of emotions. You would feel extreme sadness, anger, sorrow. However, that pain is no comparison to the kind of pain that such parents have to bear.

I find such behaviour very sombre.

How can anyone have such a callous attitude towards their parents who cared for them. Maybe calling them daily, or visiting them every weekend is not possible.

But at least give them a call in your free time. Spare five minutes and tell them in a week that you are okay and doing well.

Our society is such that we do not even have enough role models. Children are obsessed with Bollywood heroes and consider them their role models. What do these people do? Dance on songs like Munni Badnam Hui, marry four times in reel as well as real life, slap their parents and friends on camera, run over people, are loaded with bling, shoot animals that are on the verge of extinction, possess illegal weapons and what not. What can we expect from the children who have such role models?

Ask them about Bhagat Singh or Nelson Mandela. They do not even know who these people are and what have they done for society.

In short, what I mean is, good values come along with awareness about such sacrifices and a society inculcated with love and peace and these qualities will only prevail if we, the citizens, have a good civic sense.

Without being too repetitive, I would like to conclude. Our mothers have done so much for us. Let’s all of us take a pledge that we, in the name of humanity, will never hurt our mothers. Do not be that tree for your mother which never bore fruits.

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose marginally on Tuesday (October 08, 2013) a net 22.25 points (0.38%) and closed at the 5928 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 5975 points level. It then rose further and registered the day’s high at the 5981 points level at 10.14 a.m. The index then declined and turned into a range bound movement until 3.00 p.m.

T

he two measures on lowering of MSF rate and inducing short-term liquidity by the RBI on October 7, are expected to help cool interest rates at the short-end and help tune liquidity conditions to normality in the medium-term.

With the rupee having been stable in recent times and a delay in tapering by the Fed appearing more likely in the face of the US shutdown, the RBI could be expected to track liquidity closely and narrow the repo-MSF differential consistent with its monetary policy signaling mechanism.

The MSF (Marginal Standing Facility) window was first introduced in the April 2011 Annual Policy (effective from May 2011), whereby banks could borrow in excess of the regular repo auctions under LAF, but at a higher cost. As of May 2011, the MSF rate stood at 8.25%, 100 bps above the repo rate. The MSF borrowing limit for banks was set at 1% of NDTL, with additional facility of borrowing through MSF window against excess SLR securities.

This limit was increased to 2.0% in April 2012 and further to 2.5% in July 2013. The MSF rate, on the other hand, had been set at a markup of 200 bps over the repo rate as of September 20, 2013. Three weeks after the September policy review, the RBI yesterday announced a cut

in the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate by 50 bps to 9.0% in a bid to further the move of calibrating measures to normalise liquidity conditions.

So what does the RBI wish to achieve here? According to CARE Ratings the Average daily borrowings under the repo window have increased from Rs 38,523 crore in August to Rs 39,721 crore in September. Average daily MSF borrowings in August stood little above Rs 40,000 crore, which increased sharply to Rs 66,229 crore in September. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A reduction in MSF rate in line with prevailing liquidity conditions brings down the effective cost of borrowing. Assuming average daily borrowings to be in the range of Rs 60,000 for the entire year, on an annual basis the cost savings would be around Rs 300 cr or Rs 150 crore for the balance six months of the year. â&#x20AC;&#x153; Retention of MSF limit at 2.5% of NDTL indicates that liquidity conditions remain tight and availability of funds is crucial. As liquidity conditions revert to their normal, a lowering of the MSF limit is also possible as the RBI had increased this level to 2.5% from 2% in July.

The calibrated lowering of MSF rate to bring it back to a mark-up of 100 bps above the repo in due course would be contingent on stability in liquidity conditions and forex market dynamics.

In addition to moderating the MSF rate, the RBI is simultaneously providing additional liquidity through term repos of 7-day and 14day tenor. This would be for a notified amount of 0.25% of net demand and time liabilities (NDTL) of the banking system; conducted through variable rate auctions on every Friday, beginning October 11, 2013.

Sebi To Soon Notify Norms For Listing Of Start-Ups, SMEs

Market regulator Sebi will soon notify new norms for listing of start-ups and small and medium enterprises on stock exchanges without having to make initial public offer (IPO). The Sebi board had in June approved the amendments of rules to permit listing of start-ups and SMEs in Institutional Trading platform (ITP) without an IPO. Sources said the Securities and Exchange Board of India is expected to notify the new regulations within a week.

Indiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Q3 M&A Activity At $5.7 Bn

India Incâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s merger and acquisition activity during the July-September quarter amounted to USD 5.7 billion, taking the deal tally for the first nine months of this year to USD 17 billion, says a Mergermarket report. According to the global deal tracking firm, deal value declined 28.6% on a quarter-on-quarter basis and on a year-on-year basis it registered a 44% fall.

India To Be Top Infrastructure Goods Importer By 2020

India will topple the United States as the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest importer of infrastructure goods by 2020 and is expected to hold this position till 2030, a report by HSBC said. According to the report, the demand for materials needed for infrastructure projects like metals, minerals, buildings and transport equipment is expected to increase as the country invests in building its civil infrastructure. The US is currently the biggest importer of infrastructure-related goods, but by 2020 India will become the lead importer of such goods as it invests in building its domestic networks and is expected to remain at the top of the chart till 2030, the report said.

Three FDI Proposals Worth Rs 38 Crore Cleared

Three proposals entailing Rs 38.09 crore in foreign direct investment (FDI) have been cleared, the Finance Ministry said yesterday. Equitas Holdings has been given permission to increase FDI percentage in an investing company by way of share transfers. The proposal entails investment of Rs 36.09 crore. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Central Government has approved three proposals of FDI amounting to Rs 38.09 crore approximately,â&#x20AC;? the ministry said in a statement.

UMBAI: Aware of the stiff challenge awaiting them in the upcoming battle against World Cup champions India, Australia's Adam Voges said that the key is to make a good start in the sevenmatch rubber, which can provide a chance to the visitors to grab the number one ODI ranking.

"Look, there's a big incentive for us in this tournament. Obviously, India are number one at the moment but if we can have a good win in this series, we've got an opportunity to overtake them, so there's no bigger incentive than that," said the 34-year-old Western Australia middle order batsman.

"I think our one-day batting has been okay. We played pretty well against England in their conditions.

UMBAI: Senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde became the first political bigwig to file his nomination to contest for the presidentship of the Mumbai Cricket Association at its biennial election which is scheduled on October 18.

"There are a lot of issues facing the MCA's clubs and members. They lack facilities and I want to improve them. That's one of the reasons I want to contest the elections," Munde told reporters after filing his nomination at the MCA office here.

Asked whether he would be contesting against another big Maharashtra politician Sharad Pawar, who has also evinced interest to return to the helm of MCA, the BJP Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha said, "I am the first to file the nomination for president. I don't know about Mr Pawar."

"Mr Munde filed his nomination today. He is contesting as an independent. So far there is no other nomination for the president's post," MCA Joint Secretary Dr P V Shetty told PTI. The last date for nomination is October 11. The papers would be scrutinised on October 12 and withdrawals, if any, would take place on October 15.
