TRANSFERRED Cop who was beaten up by MLAs gets transferred to Sangli
By A Staff Reporter
N
early a fortnight after having his suspension revoked, Sub-inspector Sachin Suryavanshi was transferred to his home town, Sangli, on Friday. According to officials in the state Director General’s (DG) office, the cop had submitted an application requesting a transfer to Sangli. However, Home Department sources confirmed that Suryavanshi, till now posted at Worli’s Traf-
fic Control room, was being shunted to the Sangli Police Training Centre. In March, there was an altercation between Suryavanshi and BVA MLA Ksitij Thakur at the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. Subsequently, a Breach of Privilege Motion was put forth and Suryavanshi was spotted and beaten up in the premises of the state Legislative Assembly by Thakur and another MLA Ram Kadam. All the MLAs involved with the case were then sus-
pended and had their suspensions revoked on July 24. According to the transfer order, Suryavanshi has been ordered reach Sangli within the next 24 hours, while he himself has stated that he would not move anywhere until the probe was complete. Though the state Director General of Police (DGP) has made it clear that the cop was transferred at his own request, the buzz is that this is a clear case of political vendetta. Azad Shrivastav | ADC

n an interesting case in the Bombay High Court, the court recently dismissed a petition filed by the Khalapur Taluka Shikshan Prasarak Mandal based in Khopoli, Raigad, against the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) order placing one of their polytechnic colleges under the ‘No Admission’ category for the academic

year 2013-14. According to the petition filed by the Khalapur Taluka Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, the trust which has established a polytechnic college in 1983, conducts a total of ten diploma courses that also draws students from Mumbai. Of these, four have a second shift. On May 10, 2012 the institution was granted an extension of approval for all its diploma courses for 2012-13. However, On May 25, 2012 a Show Cause notice was issued to the trust asking them to explain why action should not be initiated under the provisions of the AICTE Act, 1987. The notice was issued on the basis that a surprise visit to the institution had been conducted on April 28, 2012 which had brought out deficiencies in the amenities and infrastructure. “The officials of the trust were asked to appear before the Standing Complaint Committee to which the trust submitted a reply on June 8, 2012. An Expert Visiting Committee inspected the institution again on December 7, 2012, and on February 4, 2013 the trust applied online for an extension of approval for 2013-14. However on April 9, 2013, an order was passed by the AICTE stating that the Expert Visiting Committee had reported several deficiencies including the nonavailability of infrastructure and

After hearing both sides, the division bench comprising Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice S.C. Gupte dismissed the petition and said, “We see no force in the contention. There is no dispute about the position that after 2010, the AICTE has applied its regulations to polytechnics which conduct diploma courses, such as the petitioner. Picture Perfect!
BETWEEN TRAINS: The ladies’ compartment in local trains is the greatest gift the Indian Railways has bestowed upon the women of Mumbai. In the maddening everyday rush, without these coaches, women would be felt up and trampled upon if forced to ride alongside men. The little boys find it to be a sanctuary too.
A BEACH BACKYARD: The urban middle class and the lower classes consume the beach differently. The educated few like to walk the pavement and sit on the edge, watching the sun set on the horizon. But to the lowly many, it matters little that they cannot own a land in the large city, because the beach is their backyard. (This picture was entered in the National Geographic Traveler’s Contest).
NATASHA REGO, a journalism student and an intern with ADC from Bangalore, recently participated in the National Geographic Photography Contest. While she did not win, we are sufficiently proud of her for bringing you the photograph in question,
along with a few others. Our readers have seen her work before on these pages and are aware that she considers Mumbai a most potent muse. In her own words: “I was born in the lazy historical city of Mysore, but it was a city that didn’t suit me. At 17, I moved to
Adolescent in India WE recently saw a very young girl dressed in jeans and t-shirt, palpably looking like she was from the low income group, walking hand in hand with a young man who looked to be in his early twenties. The girl looked down as she walked, smiling bashfully. Her t-shirt carried the declaration, “I Kiss Better than I Cook”. The Population Council’s ‘Youth in India: Situation and Needs
Study of 2008’ revealed some sobering facts. No need to think that they have changed dramatically, except perhaps for some numbers, and in view of the fact that International Youth Day is this Monday, they actually bear repeating. There are approximately 315 million young people aged 10-24 years in India. They represent over 30 per cent of the country’s
Bangalore on the pretext of ‘further studies’, but the truth is I wanted to see the world and Bangalore was the city closest to home that I was allowed to migrate to at that age.” “Exactly five years later, in May 2013, at 22, I found myself walking up and down the humid and crowded streets of Mumbai, my dream city”, she adds. “I had a doe-eyed image of the city although I was warned that it may not be as wonderful my young and inexperienced mind liked to imagine. But I was right to have the image I did because Mumbai delivered on every account and sometimes exceeded expectations, even for a person like me who can’t construct a clear sentence in Hindi”, Natasha confesses. “As a photographer of streets, I had material everywhere I looked. Sometimes I would be chased out of places where I was crossing the line, like at Churchgate station, or population with a large proportion living in the urban centre of Mumbai. These are some of the realities they face today. A MUTATING MAZE: Crossing over Mumbai’s congested roads is a task, only easily done by the experienced. The trick is to keenly watch the traffic. For a little while in between, the traffic will come to a sudden halt. That’s when you dash through the gaps to the other side. It’s a mutating maze out there.

everal outstation students, some of whom had come all the way from Gujarat and some from different parts of Maharashtra, were left disappointed on August 5 by the Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratories, who did not allow them to appear for the department’s recruitment exam. What has miffed most students who came all the way from Pune, Nagpur, Aurangabad etc. in the wee hours of the morning was that while they were not allowed to appear for the exam,
the ones who stayed overnight on the streets outside were allowed to appear. The students are now up in arms against this. The Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratories, which comes under the Home Ministry, had recently invited applications for Scientific Officers (Group B) and Scientific Assistants (Group C), Assistant Chemical Analyser and Scientific Assistants for about 100 posts. The posts advertised were meant for Cyber Crime, Tape Authentication & Speaker Identification and the qualification for this was an MSc/BSc in Chemistry.
The recruitment was being carried on for Forensic Labs in Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad and Nagpur. On Monday, the interviews for the post of Assistant Chemical Analyser were to be held at the Forensic Lab, Kalina. As per the advertisement, the candidates were to report for the interview one hour prior at 9.30 AM. But most of the candidates who had come at around 8 a.m. were asked to go back as the authorities claimed of having selected 300 candidates for the posts already. Defending his decision, Director and Chief of the recruitment
process D K Malwe remarked, “The candidates
should have come on the previous night itself to get an
entry in to the first 300. Those who came early got the chance to face the interview”. An aspirant, Megha Jaipurkar (MSc in Bio-Chemistry) remarked, “I came from Chandrapur and I was told to go back without interviewing me. While Aparna Kinhikar, another aspirant from Ahmedabad said, “I am an MSc in Forensic Science from the Gujarat University and was awarded first prize by the same lab last year during a National Conference organised by it. I too was denied a chance to appear for the interview. What is the use of our merit then?” PTI

S
leuths of the Navghar police are investigating a complaint registered by a 24year-old woman against her estranged husband alleging bigamy, despite the fact that a case of dowry harassment is pending against him and her in-laws in a UP-based court. The woman, Archana, was married to Shivkumar Vishwakarma on July 11, 2008 at their native village in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. The couple moved to a rented accommodation in the Powai area of Mumbai, but less than a year after their marriage, Shivkumar and his relatives
starting harassing her for more dowry. Fed up with the constant physical and mental torture, Archana went back to her native village, where her parents registered a complaint under section 498 of the IPC against Shivkumar and his family members. Even as the matter remained pending before the judiciary, Shivkumar allegedly re-married and started pressuring Archana to give him a divorce. Archana, who currently stays in the Navghar area of Bhayandar (East), registered a complaint with the local police on Thursday. “The girl’s father has alleged that he was threatened by Shivkumar when asked for an explanation. We have registered a complaint and are investigating the case,” confirmed Senior Police Inspector Dinkar Pingle.

etrol and diesel dealers in Vashi, Nerul and adjoining other areas have been incurring considerable losses as the price of fuel in Kharghar and Panvel is lower by almost Rs. 4.60. According to dealers, the newly introduced Local Body Tax (LBT) by the state government is taking a toll on the profits of petrol pumps in Navi Mumbai. The cost of petrol in the city, as compared to Kharghar and Panvel, and even Mumbai and Thane, has been affecting business. “The price hike has affected the sales of local retail outlets by almost 50 per cent to 60 per cent,” said, Harban Singh, a petrol and diesel dealer from BPCL in Navi Mumbai. “The Municipal Corporation has not agreed to reinstate the previous rate of 1 per cent. As we find it difficult to run petrol pumps on a 24hour basis because of reduced sales, all the dealers operating in Navi Mumbai will be forced to cut down their operating time from 9 a.m to 5 p.m from August 16,” added Singh.

MUMBAI | SATURDAY, AUGUST 10, 2013
Lower fuel prices in Kharghar and Panvel are creating losses for petrol pumps in Vashi, Nerul and the surrounding areas
A large part of the sales has been diverted to neighboring areas thereby making it difficult for retail outlets in Vashi and Nerul, which are fully equipped for routine sale, to operate, primarily because their expenditure on manpower, electricity and general operation has remained the same. The three oil companies BPCL, HPCL and IOCL say that the 0.2% LBT on a sale levied in Thane, Raigad and Nashik districts is being recovered by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) through the oil companies, thereby putting the burden of the extra tax solely on Navi Mumbai residents.
The dealers added, “The citizens of Navi Mumbai should not bear the Tax burden for the product they have not consumed at all. The oil companies are of the opinion that this 0.2% LBT is charged to the citizens as per the guidelines of the government.” If the municipality gives the permission to levy 0.2% LBT on purchases, the burden of additional taxation on Navi Mumbai residents will reduce.

Ponder awhile… “Terrorism is the tactic of demanding the impossible, and demanding it at gunpoint.” — Christopher Hitchens
Hafiz Saeed’s threat P
AKISTANI terrorist Hafiz Saeed who masterminded the horrible attack on Mumbai has issued a new threat. The terrorist who is roaming free because the civilian establishment dare not act against him was addressing a rally on the Eid-day. He said the LeT which had carried out the Red Fort attack, should do it again. The terrorist organisation had attacked Mumbai five years ago. What is most alarming is that terrorist Hafiz Saeed has issued the threat in the open, without bothering about how the civilian government would react to his threat. Evidently he knows the government would not take any action against him. Hafiz Saeed is part of the army and evidently he knows fully what the situation is. The information minister’s reaction says it all: He said that Saeed was only giving sermons and there was no threat in his speech. As in the past, the prime minister will be addressing the nation from Red Fort in Delhi on the Independence Day. A large gathering is likely to be present on the occasion. His threat must be taken seriously and necessary steps be taken. What is also pertinent is to point out that the IB also has also issued a warning that an attack is likely to be carried out in Delhi.

istan under the horrible circumstances. The army succeeded in scuttling the moves for meetings and talks between India and Pakistan. The operation by Pakistan gave it the desired results. It can be clearly seen the sinister operation by Pakistan had a strong purpose. After five years, things have changed a bit. Both Pakistan and India want to normalise relations. Several peace initiatives have been undertaken. And when Nawaz Sharif was elected, he categorically state that he would renew efforts to improve ties with India. He even suggested that a solution could be found by talks. The army must have been quite alarmed by the alarming statements by Nawaz Sharif. It had to take urgent steps to torpedo Sharif’s moves. Two of our soldiers were killed and their heads were cut and taken away by them. This horrible operation was evidently meant to strike terror in people of India. And now it attacked an Indian post and shot dead five Indian soldiers. The attack was carried out by Pakistan soldiers. The attack created reactions which were expected by Pakistan. The secretarial level talks have been cancelled. It is doubtful whether any exchanges will take peace between Nawaz Sharif and our Prime Minister. Pakistan has got what it wanted. The pertinent question is whether we should cancel talks. Can we not have a better reaction than this. It is clear the incident at the LoC was orchestrated by the army and not the civilian government. What we should do perhaps is to kill some A.R. AM the boss.” That’s what Nawaz Sharif said when a little before elections, he was asked who would be the boss in Kashmir. Now, it has become clear that he is not the boss, but it is the army which is the boss. It looks like the army has a totally different agenda with regard to foreign affairs. For instance, while the civilian government wants to have talks to bring about peace between the two countries, the army wants to resort to force. The army will not give up Kashmir. It is not very much interested in having talks about the dispute between India and Pakistan over Kashmir. It wants action – war, if possible. The army has its own perceptions and programmes about how the Kashmir issue has to be tackled. It is dead against talks at any level. This ISI – the spy agency – and the terrorist groups of operations in Kashmir to make the people of Kashmir anti-India. It pushes terrorists into Kashmir to carry out various kinds of destabilisation. The terrorists wage a continuing war against India. They kill pro-India activists and under the direction of the ISI carry out proPakistani propaganda. They pay, those Kashmiris who are on their side. They have won over Hurriyat folks who are openly against India. There are quite a few Kashmiris who are funded by the ISI. Despite anti-India operations, the people of Kashmir are solidly on Indian side. Assembly elections have been held and an elected government has been established. Kashmir has become a democracy and the people are free. What is to be noted is that threats by Pakistani terrorists could not stop Kashmiris from casting their votes. Anti-India groups like the Hurriyat have been isolated. Then developments must have made Pakistan desperate and frustrated. The army, however, has not given up. It continues to conduct various kinds of operations in Kashmir. Terrorist groups have become a part of the army. The civilian government has no control over them. The killing of Benazir Bhutto was the work of the army. General Pervez Musharraf is facing trial for the murder of Benazir. They get the protection of the army. The civilian government can do precious little about it.
too had experienced he same kind of attack. He was referring to the assassination of his wife Benazir by terrorists. It was clear the murder mission was carried out by a terror group. It was a big surprise to him. This establishes the fact that the civilian government is not responsible for the continuing anti-India operations by Pakistan. The army does not want any end to disputes between India and Pakistan. In the first place it has to justify its existence and also the huge expenditure incurred on it to achieve this objective, it has to remain in control. The military in Pakistan has ruled the country since Independence. There have been coups by the army generals and civilian governments have been conspicuous by their absence. This has been possible thanks to the mindset of the people. In most Muslim countries, there is one-man rule – no chance for

ODAY as my dear friends celebrated their Eid, and delicious biriyani and kheer and invitations to lunch started coming home, my thoughts drift to last week to a trip I had made with my three close friends, Mazhar and Sajid and Sumant to Mohamed Ali Road, to taste the delicacies that were spread out after the breaking of the fast. The crowds this side of Mumbai, where a sizeable portion of Mumbai’s Muslim population lives was huge and crushing. Everybody, but everybody was headed towards either the stalls that had the delicacies or the tables that were all over the streets with the whole of the city apparently feasting. Those sitting and eating, I noticed were so engrossed in their dining they were oblivious of the hungry angry looks from us waiting to get their tables. Hungry because as we saw the spread spreading in front of them our own hungry stomachs rumbled louder, and angry because those eating seemed to have no intention of getting up. It was not sit, eat and out, but sit, eat, and enjoy.
A Brotherhood..! Mazhar, Sajid, Sumant and I watched helplessly and the doorman of the restaurant even enlightened us with gory tales of people who had waited till three last morning to get a place to eat. Then things changed; Sajid’s stomach

The rotis melted in my mouth and the other dishes including the gravy seemed to vanish even before they were placed on the table, so heavenly was the taste.
We drove the four of us to Nariman Point after that, to enjoy the breeze then decided to try the new freeway before turning and heading home. It was an evening of deep bonding, good fun, tons of laughter. Today as my dear friends celebrate Eid and delicious biriyani and kheer, and invitations to lunch start coming home, my thoughts drift from last week’s trip with my three friends Mazhar and Sajid and Sumant to all of you my readers who celebrate Eid today. As we sat for dinner that evening, as we squeezed past crowds that night none of us thought the other different; we were not Hindu or Muslim or Christian, but friends bound together with love. As we drove back home in Mazhar’s car, laughed out loud at jokes our wives would have blushed to hear, we were brothers. ANTONY GOOFS UP ON LOC KILLING, GETS SLAMMED IT is very tragic that Pakistani soldiers have once again intruded into Indian territory and gunned down five of our soldiers. Our shock and agony at this barbaric act should awaken our government to realise that mere talks with Pakistani authorities will not help, and hard hitting action is called for. Raising the matter at the United Nations will do nothing unless Pakistan realises that intruding into another country’s territory and violating her territorial jurisdiction is not civilized. Does our government feel that any retaliation will escalate into a war between the two countries and lead Pakistan to use its nuclear armaments to destroy us? What sort of a foreign policy do we have that Pakistan and China continue to intrude into our territory on their whims and fancies? My heart goes out to the families who have lost their near and dear ones and I hope that no further tragedies of the guardians of our frontiers take place.

HORRIFIC: A wave of shock and dismay is sweeping across the country over the brutal slaying of our soldiers by the Pakistani Army and their terror outfits. Yet our government chooses to be a mute spectator, acting totally helpless, and has turned out to be cowardly.
Supreme Court, can do what he pleases against India. And we will continue to light candles and hold — Apurva N. Parekh, Gamdevi talks not knowing what to do.
THE five brave Indian soldiers, killed by the Pak army and their terrorist cohorts, have died a ‘veer mrutyu’ while defending the honour and integrity of their motherland. As a matter of goodwill therefore, and as followers of turning the other cheek, we should release all the Pakistani prisoners in India and send them back to their country with honour. This will go a long way in securing permanent and lasting peace in the sub-continent. — Vineet Phadtare, Borivali
A WAVE of shock and dismay is sweeping across the country over the brutal slaying of our soldiers by the Pakistani Army and their terror outfits. However, looking at the past history of this rogue state, one is not at all surprised by their actions. When the 1965 war was about to end, the PAF dropped NAPALM bombs on the Rajasthan border. The use of this explosive is strictly prohibited by the Geneva Convention and Pak is one of the signatories to the pact. During the early stages of the 1965 war, Pak anti-aircraft guns shot down the civilian plane carrying the then Gujarat C.M. Balwantrai Mehta right inside the Indian territory. At that time also, the Congress government did nothing except lodge a strong protest. — Jorhat Singh, Kandivli
EVERY border incident with Pakistan prompts the Army Chief and Defence Minister to come out with a statement that says that local commanders are authorized to retaliate. These are brave words but are still a part of public posturing. Has any local commander used this ‘full authority’ ever before? And why have these not been reported in the media? Can the Army Chief or the Defence Minister give factual instances of such retaliation? The difference between our army and theirs is that the Pakistani Army Chief, as long as he is not aiming for a coup or something that may attract the attention of the
politics, he has not come to grips with the problems of defending our country. The Defence ministry is clearly not his cup of tea and so it will be in the fitrness of things is he is shifted to some other ‘soft’ department or advised to look after party affairs. Matters of defence ought to be handled by the Army General with the Defence Secretary only to liaise with the government. We do not need a minister for it.
IT may be recalled that Lal Krishna Advani, Arun Jaitley and Ravi Shankar Prasad had called Manmohan Singh, ‘nikamma’, ‘night watchman’ and a ‘glorified care taker’, respectively, which was vehemently objected to by the general public. But, today, people might probably revise their opinion by seeing our PMs inefficiency and inaction on all subjects. China, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have been needling India at regular intervals. But the Indian government has been behaving as though we have lost our self respect. Why should we be snubbed by Pakistan and Sri Lanka? After beheading our soldiers, Pakistan is at it again by ambushing five of our army men. Our PM and MoD are probably trying to earn themselves the Nobel Peace Prize by being humiliated by Pakistan. India is, in fact, the only country where there is no relation between a Minister and the portfolio he handles. Do Antony, Mulayam Singh Yadav and Sharad Pawar deserve the Defence portfolio? Can India afford to place such a portfolio in the hands of such politicians when we have a weak and meek PM like Manmohan Singh?

he Maharashtra Medical Council has suspended the registration of a Pune-based doctor for a period of three months, after finding him guilty of "gross medical negligence" over death of a patient he treated about three-and-half years ago. Srihari Dhore Patil, a registered medical practitioner (RMP) having a multispeciality hospital in Pune was punished after the council members unanimously agreed on the decision, the council said in an announcement. The Council acted on a complaint of a Balchandra Nalawade, resident of Nerul in Navi Mumbai who alleged that it was due to the gross negligence and casual attitude of the doctor who had operated upon his wife Asha Balchandara Nalawade, 48, at the Shree Hospital in Pune, for obesity that resulted in her death. The complainant told the council that it was on December 21, 2009 the surgery was conducted on her, who was in a hospital till December 25, 2009. After being discharged she had complained of uneasiness and severe pain in abdomen and was again admitted to a hospital on the last day of 2009.

The said fact was thoroughly pointed out in the committee report dated March 30, 2010 of BJ Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital, Pune. The council members were unanimous in accepting the report of the committee. Further, the council said, Patil failed to refer for postmortem to know exact cause of death. The doctor who appeared before the council made a written submission to it where he denied the allegation calling it concocted, imaginary, unreal and fictitious story for accumulating sympathy and pity out of the untimely death of the complainant's wife. In their order issued on July 31, the president of the MMC Kishore Taori, and Judicial Assessor Sunil Kumar Rathore have further ordered that the doctor should not not carry out any medical practice during the suspension period anywhere and the violation of the order will invite legal action. The complainant also included the name of another doctor Govind Kulkarni of the same hospital but the council did not not find any points to take action against him and action was taken only against Patil.

Again she was discharged the next day only to be readmitted to the hospital on January 3, 2010 and she died the following day, he said. The patient was taken to Maken Hospital and later to Jehangir Hospital as her conditioned worsened and complications increased during this period. She died at the Jehangir Hospital while under care of Patil, the council was further informed. A committee of medical experts from Pune was appointed to go into the causes of the death of the patient which also submitted its report to the council. "As far as the surgery is concerned, there is no negligence on part of the RMP. However the postoperative care which ought to have been taken does not not seem to have been proper," the Council noted. The pathological reports of Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) 25mg/dl and Serum Creatinine 1.5 mg/dl from 21.12.2009 had tremendously increased upto 186 mg/dl and 8.4 mg/dl at Jehangir Hospital respectively and the RMP failed to take notice of it and further failed to judge the appearances of suspected leak from the operative site and development of septicemia.

hennai Express doesn’t need a review. People who want to see it, will see it in spite of a pan; people who don’t want to, will not, in spite of a rave. Plot synopsis in short, Rahul tries to rescue Meenamma from goons, ends up in her village, gets into trouble with her Don Dad, and after some escapades falls in love with her. So now, some random stuff: The loudest applause in the cinema comes when Rajnikant’s name or picture appears on screen. So one of Bollywood’s biggest stars has to hitch a ride on the Southern star’s fan wagon? The prologue is too long and boring, that ends with Rahul (naam to suna hoga?) getting on a train to im-

merse his grand-dad’s ashes at Rameswaram. Why? Just! He intends to get off at Goa and pick up “NRI” girls with is buddies. FYI, he is 40 and single. He is not pretending to be 18, which is good. Rahul sees a girl running to catch the train and pulls her in (DDLJ moment # 1, followed by several). He also pulls in four dark, burly goons. Why? Just! Turns out they are kidnapping Meenamma and taking her

back to her village to marry another dark, burly goon. So why was she running towards the Chennaibound train? Just! They end up at her village, where her father (Satyaraj) is the Don. They are several dark, burly goons hanging around, and several sickles stuck on coconuts, but the interloper is spared. Why? Just! After a lot of to-ing and fro-ing, that involves a totally pointless scene with a mute midget, Rahul and Meenamma escape to a pretty village that hasn’t heard of the scandal of Bombay Boy’s Escape with Don’s Daughter, but, according to a passing truck driver, the entire South has, and is looking for Bombay Boy to behead him. In the pretty village, they pretend to be newly wed. Meenamma gets the film’s second funny scene (her nightmare sequence) and then gets all coy and wife-like. Rahul still has some scenes to go before he grows up. DDLJ wrap up (not a spoiler for Indian moviegoer): Rahul cannot marry Meenamma without Dad’s approval, and has to fight burly goon fiancé, because in keeping with the great Indian tradition, the father will give away his daughter to a Real Man. That is, one who can beat his rival to pulp. The question is, why should Shah Rukh Khan, sitting right up at the Bollywood peak, want to slide down and do such an awful film. Maybe because he needs to check on his fan following, since the stall guys love Salman, the balcony guys love Aamir and everyone else loves Ranbir Kapoor. So instead of growing up, Rahul dumbs down. Which is a pity, because proudly critic-proof Rohit Shetty is incapable of bringing on to the screen Shah Rukh Khan’s talent, wit, intelligence and, yes, experience. Chennai Express may make 100 crores, but it still insults the audience and tarnishes SRK’s superstardom. Deepika Padukone understands the silliness of the film, and acts accordingly— in the end, she is the only saving grace. Somebody give her an award!
Almost Fast And Quite Furious
A
South African film creeps in quietly while the Big Eid Blockbuster is grabbing attention. Nothing is expected of Mukunda Michael Dewil’s Vehicle 19, so the moderately paced thriller is not a disappointment. It’s not as Hollywood formula as the Fast and Furious franchise — but it aspires to be, and also steals Paul Walker from there. Put Walker into a car, get him into danger and then sit back to see where the ride goes. Michael Woods (Walker), breaking parole, goes to Johannesberg to beg his ex-wife for another chance. He asks for a rental car and picks up an unglamorous minivan. But in the boring vehicle, what does he find — a phone in the glove compartment spewing strange messages, a gun under the seat and a bound-gagged woman in the trunk. Obviously, he’s the wrong guy in the wrong car, but it’s Walker, so he

HISTORY OF THE EAGLES — The Story of an American band - 2 Disc set – Universal Music Rs. 495/Director: Alison Ellwood
T
he band that ran up a string of hits through the seventies amid controversy brings you their story, narrated ably by Don Henley. The 3 hour long documentary takes fans down memory lane, giving them an insight on what made The Eagles what they are today. This documentary narrates Henley and Glen Frey’s perspective on a band they formed almost 40 years ago. On the first DVD we journey down a Texas road as Henley talks about his beginning and association with different bands, eventually forming The Eagles. Lots of rare footage from every stage of the band’s life features in this DVD from Southern California in the 70’s to the haircuts, concert and studio footage, in depth interviews with people the band was associated with such as Glyn Johns, David Geffen, Jackson Browne, Bob Seeger, Linda Ronstadt to every band member that was part of The Eagles - Bernie Leadon, Randy Meisnerand Don Fedler who agreed to be interviewed and also lambast other members. We are also educated on the turmoil that existed within the band particularly the early comings and goings of band members. The music gels well with the narrative, sticking closely
to the evolution of the band, their tours, their tryst with drugs and alcohol and their albums as well as their sudden split in the mid 1980s. The Eagles’ folk-country styling with dashes of Rock ‘n’ Roll cannot be missed, especially when you go back to witnessing the making of iconic songs like Take It Easy, One of These Nights and the album Hotel California among others. The second DVD details the members as they seek separate careers, their impressive comeback of the remaining Eagles (Frey, Walsh, Henley and bassist Timothy B. Schmit) in 1990 with the Hell Freezes Over tour to their album Long Road out Of Eden. So what’s missing? A dig into how Henley and Frey composed their music and the women who fell in love with them. That aside, this is an entertaining journey through the lives of the members of one of America’s musical treasures. — By Verus Ferreira

doesn’t freak like a normal guy would. The situation that is very Hitchcockian, and puts Michael into a major soup — the woman, Rachel (Naima LcLean), is a prosecutor who was on her way to testify against a corrupt police chief, involved in the sex trade. So the police force is in pursuit to prevent Rachel from reaching court. What stacks even more trouble for the guy is that as an alcoholic excon and parole-jumper, he is already on the wrong side of the law — everything is just bad luck and

bad timing. It is so implausible, that a Bollywood producer will definitely be inspired to copy it (hopefully, after buying the rights). It does deliver a load of thrills on a relatively modest budget. The film is shot mainly in the car — aiming for a Phonebooth like claustrophobia— the outside, that is the buzzing city, is seen through the car windows. Paul Walker is easy on the eye, and even though he is confined to a car seat, talking to himself, he is worth watching.

LEGAL QUERIES
EXPERT SPEAK Gajanan Khergamker
EXAMINE DOCUMENTS WELL BEFORE FINALISING DEAL
T
he formalities that accompany the purchase of a flat are innumerable and need to be scrutinized thoroughly lest you land in a hitch owing to a scheming builder’s ploy or personal oversight. Very often, there have been cases when even after a flat has been transferred into a buyer’s name, he realizes that the builder has sold the same flat to another too. There are legal remedies in such cases, which are quite avoidable considering the quantum of time, funds and energy, a buyer has to spend in order to retrieve what is legally his own. The aggrieved buyer can file a complaint against the builder in a consumer court and can be entitled to compensation of account of delayed delivery of a flat at interest levied on the amount deposited him. The buyer could also file a civil suit for declaration of the title in his favour and directing the builder or the person in possession to give vacant and peaceful possession of the flat/premises. He could also file a permanent injunction restraining the other person to whom the flat is sold from creating any third rights, charging, encumbering, alienating, mortgaging, disposing of or otherwise dealing with the flat. It is imperative for the buyer to have his documents of purchase duly stamped and registered before those of the other party in order to get a clear title. A cheating and criminal complaint too can be filed against the builder for criminal breach of trust. In order to safeguard their homes, potential buyers need to verify that the premises isn’t already mortgaged to any financial institution; whether the seller has a good and clean title and whether all taxes and dues of the existing flat have been paid till date. It is important for the buyer to examine the original plans sanctioned by the municipal authority in question before making the final payment. The builder is required to follow the municipal rules and regulations depending on the plot and its location. The title certificate should be obtained from the builder to equip you with legal remedies in case the builder decides to swindle you in the future. More often than not, it’s only following delivery of the premises that most home-buyers realise that the builder has used substandard material in constructing the flat. In such cases, the buyer can file a complaint with the Consumer Forum as housing construction is included in the definition of ‘service’ under section 2 (1) (0) of the Consumer Protection Act, 1986. Home-owners have the option of either approaching a co-operative court, civil court or criminal court in case of any transgression by the builder. If the building hasn’t been registered as a cooperative society, they would have to approach a criminal court and file a suit under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code for cheating against the builder. TetraVex is a challenging brain teaser. The object of the game is to fill the grid with the tiles so that the patterns on the adjacent edges of each tile match, much like aligning domino tiles. The object of the game is to place all the tiles in the grid so that the figures on the adjacent edges of each tile match. You can place any tile anywhere in the grid, but you cannot place a tile in the grid if its edges do not match all of its neighbors. Find a digit that occurs only once on a given puzzle. You know that this digit must lie along the outer edge of the grid, since there are no other tiles that can match it. You can simplify solving by cutting out the nine squares and juggling them in the grid.

Medal eludes Saina after loss to Korean Yeon Bae, Gallant Kashyap also loses G
SINDHU CREATES HISTORY, ENSURES
A MEDAL AT WORLD BADMINTON
G
UANGZHOU, CHINA: Rising shuttler P V Sindhu created history by becoming the first Indian woman singles player to ensure a medal at the World Badminton Championships after scoring an upset win over local favourite Shixian Wang of China to enter the semifinals here. Playing in her maiden World Championships, Sindhu, seeded 10th, had an easy outing against the World No. 8 and seventh seeded Wang. The Indian took just 55 minutes to get the better of her fancied Chinese opponent 21-18 21-17. World No. 12, Sindhu will take on the winner of the match between Carolina Marin and Ratchanok Intanon in the last four round. Before Sindhu, Prakash Padukone won a medal in the World Championships
way back in 1983 when he bagged a bronze in the men singles event in Copenhagen, while the women's doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa bagged another bronze for India in the last edition of the tournament at London in 2011. Against Wang, Sindhu relied on her smashes, besides hitting as many as 19 clear winners. The 18-year-old Indian started to dominate from the word go. After initially being tied at 3-3, the Hyderabadi surged ahead to open a slight 6-3 lead. Determined not to lose the advantage, Sindhu kept on increasing the gap to make it 13-8. Wang, however, managed to bag four points on the trot to reduce the margin to 12-13. But Sindhu regained her composure pretty quickly to pocket
three consecutive points to once again move ahead. Wang gave Sindhu scare one more time by making it 18-19 before the Indian eventually wrapped it up 21-18. In the second game also, Sindhu straight-away took a 6-2 lead before four straight points from Wang served as a warning bell to the Indian. Tied at 6-6, Sindhu roared back with three consecutive points to move ahead once again and thereafter she always maintained a lead of at least a point or two. Comfortably placed at 20-16, Sindhu wasted just one match point before she capped it off in style to seal the game 21-17. Sindhu is having a dream run at the tournament as she had stunned defending champion Yihan Wang of China in the pre-quarterfinals.
UANGZHOU (China): The elusive World Championship medal once again slipped through Saina Nehwal’s fingers as the Indian ace suffered a straight-game defeat against Korean Yeon Ju Bae in the quarterfinals of the prestigious event here today. The London Olympics bronzemedallist, a quarterfinalist in the last two editions as well, was erratic and could not hold her nerves as she went down rather tamely 21-23 9-21 in a 40-minute match at the Tianhe Indoor Stadium. Kashyap, who was also playing at the adjacent court, played out of his skin but still could not get across world number three Du Pengyu of China. His gallant fight ended with a 21-16 20-22 15-21 loss in an energy-sapping contest which lasted one hour and 15 minutes here. Saina played an aggressive game in the opening match and opened up a 11-7 lead at the interval. Her baseline smashes got her a lot of points as the Indian was in control of the match. However, Bae, who looked offcolour initially as she struggled with her strokes and reach, slowly narrowed down the lead and clawed back at 19-19. Saina was struggling with the drift as she lost a lot of points hitting wide. The Indian also faltered at the net. From nowhere, Bae not only came into the contest but also exerted the pressure on the Indian and after a hard fight won the opening game when Saina’s shuttle kissed the net and toppled outside the court. Losing the opening game dented Saina’s confidence as she failed to put any resistance to Bae strokes. Bae, on the other hand, was confidence personified as she played like
a champion and decimated the Indian. The left-handed Korean dominated the proceedings completely as after a 5-5 initial fight, she moved to the interval with a 11-6 lead. The Korean’s strokes were powerful and drops deceptive as she reduced Saina to a bystander. National coach Pullela Gopichand, who was also monitoring the Kashyap’s match at the adjacent court, also could not lift Saina’s spirits at the break as the Indian completely resigned in the final moments of the game. Bae, on the other hand, held her nerves and wrapped up the match quickly to seal her place at the semifinals. World number 17 Kashyap opened up a 8-5 lead but Du clawed back and moved into the break with a two-point cushion at 11-9. The Indian then grabbed four straight points to wrest the lead and though Du caught up at 13-13, Kashyap kept his nose ahead to pocket the first game. In the second game, Du zoomed to a 7-0 lead but Kashyap played a steady game and slowly caught up with the Chinese at 16-16 and turned the tables at 19-17. The Indian also had a game point at 20-19 but Du held his nerve and roared back into the contest.
Sindhu can improve further, feels Gopichand Sindhu’s success result of discipline & determination: Parents G
UANGZHOU: National coach Pullela Gopichand expressed satisfaction after P V Sindhu’s superb show ensured India a bronze medal at the World Championship here today but at the same time reminded that Saina Nehwal would make a comeback despite her quarterfinal loss. “It is good to have a win after two losses,” Gopichand said after Sindhu notched up a 21-18 21-17 win over world No 8 Shixian Wang in a 55-minute women’s singles quarterfinal match. “She (Sindhu) is a good player but she can improve further. She is a quick learner and I hope she will do well tomorrow,” Gopichand saidI. “It was a tough match. It went neck and neck and there wasn’t much to choose. There was not more than 2-3 points of difference. Sindhu was leading all the time. But it was just by a slender margin. The rallies was pretty long and Sindhu was able to attack when needed. So overall it was a good show,” analysed Gopichand. The former All England champion feels that Sindhu can certainly improve further.
Asked about Saina, Gopichand said: “Saina was actually not well. She had an upset stomach. She got drained out. She was playing well in the first game but she got really drained, there was no energy left after the first game. I don’t think it dented her confidence but physically she could not compete in the second game,” Gopichand said. Questioned whether Saina’s career is on a downward spiral, Gopi begged to differ.,“But Saina is just 23 years old. I don’t see there is any problem with her. She is a great player, a class player and I am sure she will come good in the next World Championship.” The former All England champion, however, was impressed with Kashyap’s performance and said he will surely come good in future. “I am happy with Kashyap. He almost won the match. It was extremely unfortunate that he lost the match from that stage. But the way he played, I think he was very good and I am extremly happy. It was a close match. It is a good experience for him and I am sure he will come back strong in the next edition,” he said.
H
YDERABAD: The parents of P V Sindhu, who today became the first Indian woman singles player to ensure a medal at the ongoing World Badminton Championships, attributed their daughter’s success to hard work and determination. “We are very happy to see her perform so well. She has reached this level due to her hard work and sheer determination. Her routine of reaching academy for practice at 4 am is delivering wonderful results for her,” Sindhu’s father P V Ramana told PTI here. Sindhu’s parents were at her academy to watch their daughter take on a tough Chinese opponent. “We are very happy. It is very exciting. We are celebrating the medal,” Ramana said. “We are at the (Pullela Gopichand Badminton) Academy and all the children here are celebrating the moment,” he added. Applauding national coach Gopichand, Ramana said the All England Badminton Champion’s dedication is behind Sindhu’s success.“With Chief National Coach Gopichand mentoring Sindhu, a bright future is assured for her,” he said. Meanwhile, accolades
Sindhu with her parents and her sister. have been pouring in for the 18year-old shuttler’s stupendous show. Former international Uday Pawar said, “It is a very good news. She is young, very talented and is playing fearless badminton. Beating two Chinese players in a row is creditable. Hopefully, she not only
goes on to reach the finals but also to win the title.” Pawar pointed out that Sindhu was able to adapt to the conditions better than her compatriots in the ongoing championships and will now have to maintain her speed to go right through.

the battle for middleand long-distance mastery over traditional rivals Ethiopia.
OSCOW: Penpics of six athletes to watch out for at the World Athletics Championships that get under way in Moscow tomorrow. USAIN BOLT (JAM; men’s 100m, 200m 4x100m relay) The biggest name in track and field has also firmly established himself at the top table of global sports stars since winning triple gold in the Beijing Olympics in 2008. The 26-year-old Jamaican swept aside all before him at the 2009 Worlds in Berlin, setting two new world records in the process. The sole blot on his copybook was a false start disqualification in the 100m in the 2011 Daegu worlds, quickly rectified when he added a further three Olympic golds to his trophy haul at the 2012 London Games. He remains the man to beat, even more so since the withdrawal of teammates Yohan Blake and Asafa Powell, and US arch-rival Tyson Gay, the latter for failing drugs tests.
ALLYSON FELIX (USA; women’s 200m, 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay) The graceful style of the lissom American belies a steely grit and fiercely competitive nature that has seen her become one of the dominant forces in women’s sprinting. At just 27 years of age, Felix has won eight world golds and four Olympic golds. But she is in Moscow for one reason only: to reclaim the 200m title. After three successive world victories in the event in Helsinki, Osaka and Berlin, she could only finish third in Daegu after deciding to branch out into the 400m. The physical demands took too much of a toll then, and Felix has now re-fixed her sights on the half-lap event, which does not feature rival

1500m at Monaco’s Diamond League meet this season, all eyes were on Briton Mo Farah, who had stepped down to hone his speed ahead of an assault on the 5,00010,000m double. He got exactly what he wanted as Kiprop proved there is life for Kenya after David Rudisha, the world and Olympic 800m champion out injured. Kiprop blasted through the line in the fourth fastest time ever, Farah on his coat-tails for the sixth fastest in a new European record. In the absence of Rudisha, the Kenyan team will look to Kiprop to maintain that stunning form in
Veronica Campbell-Brown, the defending champion and double Olympic gold medallist who is out after a positive drugs test.
YELENYA ISINBAYEVA (RUS; women’s pole vault) The self-proclaimed queen of the pole vault could not have scripted her send-off to track and field any better, with a nostalgic finale on home soil in front of legions of her own fans. The two-time Olympic champion, double world gold medallist and world record holder, now 31, might have lost some of her on-field prowess, but only the most foolhardy would dare to rule her out of the medal running. For Isinbayeva, it will be a question of mastering her emotions and harnessing them to gold-medal effect. ASBEL KIPROP (KEN; men’s 1500m) When Kiprop took to the track for the
JAMES DASAOLU (GBR; men’s 100m) The Briton came late to athletics, only really concentrating on sprinting when he went to university from the age of 18. But the 25-year-old has hit a rich vein of form coming into the worlds. He kicked off his season with silver in the 60 metres at the European Indoor Championships, and then clocked a personal best of 9.91sec at the British trials for Moscow. Only Linford Christie has gone faster in a British vest, and with a diminished field in the 100m, Dasaolu can realistically dream of getting to the podium.
BOHDAN BONDARENKO (UKR; men’s high jump) Usain Bolt’s predilection for world records notwithstanding, it is difficult to see where a new world best mark might come from. Bondarenko seems the likeliest bet, having hit some outstanding form in the run-up to the worlds. Cuban Javier Sotomayor’s record of 2.45m has stood since 1993, but the 23-year-old Ukrainian might just have what it takes to challenge. At this season’s Diamond League meet in Lausanne, Bondarenko cleared 2.41m, placing him third on the all-time list behind Sotomayor and Sweden’s Patrick Sjoeberg. He had three good efforts at 2.46m to send a ripple through the high jumping world, and will have to replicate that form in Moscow in the face of some stiff opposition from Olympic champion and local hero Ivan Ukhov.

Lara is a cut above Tendulkar, Ponting: Afridi
KARACHI: Joining the debate on who among Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar is a greater batsman, Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi said he considers the West Indian a cut above the best of his era. "Lara was the best batsman I have seen in my entire career spanning 16 years better. Personally I found him to be a class above the two other greats of this era, Tendulkar and (Ricky) Pointing," Afridi said in an interview. "He was the most difficult batsmen I have bowled too in every format of the game. He could play and hit boundaries at will. Especially against the spinners he produced boundaries out of the hat a superb player and I enjoyed watching him bat," Afridi said while talking about the greatest players of his era. Afridi said there were times when he felt that Lara could play blindfolded. "At times I felt he was so good at playing spin he could even bat well against them blindfolded. Tendulkar and Pointing are also greats but I thought Lara was a cut above them," he said. Talking about the greatest bowlers of his time, Afridi praised Australian, Glenn McGrath and compatriot Mohammad Asif who could swing the new ball both ways at will. "They were the only bowlers who I felt knew when they were going to bowl inswing or outswing and that is a big quality in any bowler," he explained. Afridi also talked about his comeback and a resurgence in his career. "Now whenever I get out, I talk to myself and I curse myself for not finishing off a match if I am batting. It has helped me a lot this self assessment therapy," he said.
EW DELHI: For more than 26 years, he has groomed Indian boxing’s youth crop with stupendous results but G Manoharan remained in oblivion even as the system rewarded his contemporaries and juniors annually. Manoharan, currently the head coach of the Indian youth team, has mentored various age groups since 1987. To his credit, the Sports Authority of India coach has trained the likes of Asian Championships gold-medallist Shiva Thapa and World Championships bronzemedallist Vikas Krishan in their time at the youth level. Last year, Shiva, who won a Youth Olympics silver medal under Manoharan in 2010, became the youngest Indian to qualify for the summer Olympics. Also among his former wards is Sumit Sangwan, a gold-medallist at last year’s Asian Olympic qual-
Indian Boxing Federation for the past six years, Manoharan has somehow always drawn a blank. “I have been applying for six years, even the federation and my students have backed me with their endorsements but somehow I have always missed out. It’s hard to understand but I have come to accept it now,” Manoharan told PTI after being ignored yet again. “I have seen both my contemporaries and juniors being awarded the Dronacharya ahead ifiers. Under Manoharan, Sumit of me. Obviously I do question had bagged a silver medal at the where I stand but then I can’t stop Asian Youth Championships in working either. My association with boxing goes back a long 2010. Before that, under his tutelage, way,” he said. This year, little-known Thokchom Nanao Singh won India’s lone gold medal at the in- women’s coach Mahavir Singh, augural Youth World Champi- whose name was endorsed by Olympic bronze-medallist and onships in 2008. Steadfast down Maverick 2-1
MUMBAI: Steadfast SC ‘B’ pulled off a narrow 2-1 win against Maverick FC (Mazagaon) in a Third Division match of the MDFA (Mumbai District Football Association) League 2012-13, at the St. Xavier’s ground, Parel on Friday afternoon. Akram Khan struck the opening goal in the first half for Steadfast, before Raj Fidi doubled the lead in the second half. Rahul Pandit netted the lone goal for the Mazagaon outfit. Later in the day, Vijaylaxmi and Clint FC played out a tame goalless draw.
HESTER-LE-STREET: Ashes newcomer Jackson Bird captured the prize scalp of England captain Alastair Cook as Australia took charge of the first day of the fourth Test at Chester-leStreet today. England, who won the toss, were 155 for four at tea with Ian Bell six not out and Jonathan Bairstow nought not out after off-spinner Nathan Lyon had taken two wickets for 12 runs in 16 balls to dismiss South Africaborn duo Jonathan Trott (49) and Kevin Pietersen (26) and Bird snared Cook for 51. Opening batsman Cook had been at the crease for nearly four hours when Bird, in for the dropped Mitchell Starc, deceived the left-hander into leaving a ball that swung in the air and cut in off the pitch to have him lbw. Ashes-holders England came into this match having already retained the urn after a rain-affected draw in the third Test at Old Trafford left them 2-0 up with two to play. But Australia could still deny them a series victory by winning
both this match and the fifth Test at The Oval. Cook opted to bat despite the pitch and overhead conditions promising assistance to Australia’s seamers in the first Ashes match at the headquarters ground of northeast county Durham. His decision also meant Cook chose to face the new ball firstup even though his own form this series — 145 runs in three Tests at 24.16 with two fifties and a best of 62 — had been modest. England, on a slowish outfield, initially found runs hard to come by against Ryan Harris and Tasmania’s Bird, playing his third Test. However, it was first change Shane Watson who had Joe Root (16) caught behind, although Australia had to challenge New Zealand umpire Tony Hill’s original not-out verdict. Nevertheless, the much-criticised Hot Spot — whose inventor Warren Brennan suggested ahead of this match was being deliberately duped by players on both sides applying silicone tape to their bats.
