‘ARE YOU TABLING COMMISSION REPORT THIS WINTER, OR NOT?’
By Philip Varghese

wo weeks after the Bombay High Court asked the state government to inform whether it would table the Adarsh report in the winter session of the legislature to be held this month in Nagpur, the court again directed the same question to state government after it informed the court that it was not mandatory on the part of the government to table the enquiry commission report. This comes after Yogesh Sagar, a BJP MLA from Kandivli, and former MLA Atul Shah, had filed a petition in the court on November 11. Sagar and Shah argued in their petition that the government was shielding the ac-

its report to the state government on April 18. The state government had constituted this commission in January 2011 to inquire
into two points. The first was whether the land where the society stands belongs to the Ministry of Defence, and the second was whether politicians and bureaucrats had flouted rules while granting permission to the society. The commission in its interim report had ruled that the land belonged to the state and was not reserved for anybody. The petition had stated, “This court may be pleased to issue a writ of an appropriate nature, including the Writ of Mandamus and/or a direction or an order, directing the respondent – state government, to table the Commission of Enquiry Report concerning Adarsh CHS Ltd, Continued on pg 12 «
WHERE’S THE FILE? Somaiya questions CM over file regarding allotment of land worth `100 crore to film education society going missing

Cheer up! The voters haven’t totally rejected you. Though you lost the election, you have successfully retained your deposit.
enior BJP leader Dr. Kirit Somaiya yesterday questioned Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan over the missing files related to what he called illegal allotment of plots worth Rs. 100 crore of land in Andheri to BAG Films Education Society belonging to Congress union minister Rajiv Shukla. Speaking to newspersons here at the state party office, he wanted to know whether the file pertaining to the controversial land allotment was lost in the
Dr. Kirit Somaiya Mantralaya fire, or was deliberately misplaced. Somaiya later on handed over the same file documents
sourced by him through RTI to the Chief Minister’s Office. Terming the land allotment as a second Adarsh scam, he said that the allotment to BAG Film Education Society was approved without any proper documentation. Somaiya sought to remind Chavan of his claim that all the files that were lost in the Mantralaya fire have been reconstructed and restored. He said that upon his inquiry with the Revenue Department, each of the officials Continued on pg 12 «

ith the arrest of three accused in a cheating and forgery case, the Mumbai police has exposed a well organised racket in which the accused, by presenting three forged Letters of Credit (LC), duped The Ratnakar Bank to the tune of nearly Rs.15 crore. Police personnel from MRA Marg police station arrested Shwetal Sakaria, Managing Director of Arihant Chemicals and Resins (I) Pvt Ltd, his partner Ahilesh Shah, along with their aide Himanshu Bhatt. Shwetal’s wife Khushi, father Bhupendra and mother Aruna are yet to be arrested in connection with the case, said the police. According to the police, Shwetal formed a dummy company called Mahavir Enterprises, and his aide Bhatt approached Ratnakar
Shwetal Sakaria, the main accused in the forged LC racket Bank. Subsequently, Bhatt presented the three LCs – made in the name of HDFC Bank – on behalf of Shwetal to the bank and procured nearly Rs.15 crore from them. ‘The issue is so grave that we need a separate law for it. It is only when a separate law is made that women will feel comfortable talking about it.’ By Shwetha Kannan
“M
arriage is the price men pay for sex, and sex is the price women pay for marriage.” This dialogue by Amitabh Bachchan in the movie ‘Cheeni Kum’ seems to have gone to the heads of men as they feel that after marriage the lady doesn’t have the right to say “no” to sex. The concept of marital rape might not go down well with many as it makes one wonder how can a sexual relation between a man and his wife be termed as ‘rape’, but cases of marital rape are being reported at NGOs in the city The phenomenon of forcing one’s wife to have sex is called marital rape i.e rape within marriage and though this isn’t recognised by the anti-rape laws in Section 375 (there is an exception that says: ‘Sexual intercourse by a man with his own wife, the wife
A
nother lady (40), shared an ordeal where her husband used to harass her in a way that is unheard of. While forcing her to have sex was routine for him, there were days when he used to arouse her and then refuse to have intercourse leaving the lady insulted. Another woman (35), was forced to see pornographic movies by her husband and then made to perform those sexual acts. While the 40-year-old lady is still living with her husband and putting up with torture (the sexual violence has reduced a bit, she said) as she has nowhere to go, the 35-year-old lady has been staying with her mother for a year now, along with her three daughters as she refused accept her husband’s demands. “I couldn’t leave my daughters with my husband after one of them complained of being touched inappropriately by him twice,” said the lady. In all the three cases, the women didn’t speak about the real issue of marital rape to any of their family members or friends. Why? Hasina Khan, a woman activist from Mumbai said, “The subject of marital rape is never discussed anywhere by anybody because this concept is not accepted by the society as well as the State. Also, the institution of marriage has been given so much importance that it is revered by women. Women are made to feel guilty when they oppose against the wrongdoings within a marriage. It was after several efforts that women have now started standing up against domestic violence. The presence of a law against domestic violence has given them a chance to talk about it. And now, the same holds true for marital rape. Unless a law is made to address the issue of marital rape, nothing much can be
done to stop it from happening. It is about making the State aware of this problem.” The recommendations made by a three member committee which was constituted on December 22, 2012 and headed by Justice J.S. Verma, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, along with its recommendations for amendments in criminal laws to provide for quicker trial and enhanced punishment for criminals accused of committing sexual assault against women, touched upon the issue of marital rape too. It was recommended that the exception to marital rape should be removed and that marriage should not be considered as an irrevocable consent to sexual acts.
PART - I
Therefore, with regard to an inquiry about whether the complainant consented to the sexual activity, the relationship between the victim and the accused should not be relevant. But unfortunately, it was not included in the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance, 2013. Speaking her mind on the committee’s recommendations, Khan said: “I strongly feel that these recommendations should be accepted and implemented so that women feel more secure talking about marital rape.” She further went on to say, “Section 498 A that talks about domestic violence and Prevention of Domestic Violence Act does cover violence within marriage but none of them talk about marital rape. And in my opinion, this issue is so grave that we need a separate law for it. It is only when a separate law is made that women will feel comfortable talking about it. I know, that in a so-
ciety like ours where women are conditioned to put up with all atrocities in a marriage and keep quiet, filing a criminal case against one’s husband might be difficult but that doesn’t mean that the State does not make a law against it. Giving the option of filing cases under section 498 A and Prevention of Domestic Violence Act only is like wanting the women to keep mum about the issue of marital rape. Having said this, I also feel that along with giving women an option of filing a criminal case of marital rape, the law should be made such that the woman seeking justice under this act should be given social security and other relevant assurances of being able to lead a normal and respectable life in society.” Adv. Sajan Oommen, president of The Family Court Bar Association had some strong views and opinions on this issue. This is what he had to say: “Our lawmakers enacted several laws for the protection of women from any kind of violence or abuse. But where is the implementation? There is section 376 (Rape), section 498A (harassment and demand of dowry), sections from 312 to 314 (causing miscarriage) and section 377 (unnatural offence) of the Indian Penal Code. There is also the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 (Domestic Violence Act) having various provisions to protect the women from any kind of violence or abuse. Under the Domestic Violence Act, there is requirement of Protection Officers. But even after eight years of enactment, there is hardly an appointment of protection officers. These laws are of no use unless implemented properly. Also, non application of mind by the law enactors is evident is several Acts. For
instance, domestic violence among the spouses is a part of their matrimonial disputes or problems. Also, instead of bringing all the matrimonial causes under one roof by giving jurisdiction to one court, the Domestic Violence Act is adjudicated in Magistrates Courts while other matrimonial causes are adjudicated in Family Court. Women are made to run from one court to the other and from one police station to the other.” According to Oommen, the law enactors and law enforcers never thought of measures for speedy disposal and effective adjudication of disputes and that in India the casual approach of the law enforcing authorities and the Judiciary in respect of the offences of violence against women encourages more violence. Stating an example, he said, “The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 mandates the speedy redressal of disputes. But there are matters pending for years together for even interim relief. Even after disposal of the matters in the Magistrate Courts, the parties are languishing in Appeal Courts. The humiliation and harassment in the court corridors is another ordeal for women.” He further went on to say, “We don’t need hundreds of laws. We need only one law but that has to be effectively and speedily enforced. We need to educate the public. There has to be sufficient sexual education in schools. Women too need to understand the importance of sex in matrimonial life. But in no terms can marital rape be tolerated. Women cannot be treated as commodities. They need to be respected and their decisions and feelings need to be valued and appreciated.”
not being under 15 years of age, is not rape’), there are people who have gone through this ordeal. The ADC brings you a first person account of one such lady from Mumbai who was a victim of marital rape and now, is in the process of leaving her husband. Speaking to the ADC this 29year-old mother of a seven-yearold child said: “I feel that I am out of hell now. I feel better. I feel free.” Identities of the victims are kept confidential.
Here is her story: “I got married in 2006. It was an arranged marriage. I was 21 years old and unaware of what sex was all about. It was my husband who made me understand. In a year we had a baby girl. Things were fine till then. In 2007, I started pursuing studies after 12th and used to be busy. I was also doing tiffin business for money, as my husband hardly earned anything. So at the end of the day I used to be really tired. But my husband would refuse to understand and would demand sex. Even during my menses, he used to force me to have sex. Mai apni majboori (menses) batati thi phir bhi nahi maante the. Mai kitna roti thi, chilaati thi par koi faayda nahi. Bachi ke saamne maar peet bhi hoti thi.” Finally, in June 2013, this lady decided to call off her marriage as she just couldn’t take it any more. “For five years, I put up with all sorts of violence and assault just for the sake of my daughter. I didn’t want her to be sandwiched between the proceedings for separation. I didn’t want her to be making a choice between her mother and her father. But then when things got out of hand, I had to walk out of the marriage,” she said. Today, this lady is pursuing her final year in Arts stream and also appearing for the Teacher Eligibility Test. She stays alone in the city and is working hard to be able to meet both ends. Currently, her daughter is with her husband as right now, she isn’t financially stable enough to support her daughter and herself. “Main ek baar settle ho jaun toh apni bachi ko court ke through le aaungi apne paas. Main dobara shaadi nahi karungi. Darr lagta hai. Aur meri bachi ka kya hoga? Shaadi ke baad agar mere pati ne usse pyar nahi kiya toh? Mai apni bachi ko akele sambhalungi. Use education dungi.” shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

The December 31 festivities in Dubai will centre around the iconic landmarks of the city including the Burj Khalifa, Burj Al Arab, The Palm Jumeirah and Atlantis the Palm. Since its opening in 2010, the celebrations at Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, have been shown around the world and this year will be no different, with the images joined by those of a spectacular show which will use the coastline of Dubai as the stage for a display which will begin shortly before midnight and last for more than 20 minutes. It’s all part of the new sense of accomplishment that has accompanied Dubai’s recent World Expo 2020 win and the country’s commemoration of its 42nd National Day anniversary. The show will start with an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the ‘Largest

This will cover a distance of over 99.4 km of seafront and feature 450,000 colourful fireworks and a series of scenes designed exclusively for the show and set to a musical soundtrack designed for the event. It will be visible from vantage points across Dubai, there will be parties at all the hotels on The Palm Jumeirah and everyone will be doing stuff to commemorate their involvement in the world record attempt. Nor is this all. As the six-minute world-record attempt concludes, a 15-minute display covering a one kilometre stretch of the Jumeirah beach will commence, with the Burj Al Arab, Madinat Jumeirah and Jumeirah Beach Hotel as the stunning backdrop. While the world record attempt is taking place, in Downtown Dubai residents and visitors will be able
to enjoy fireworks cascading down Burj Khalifa. The best locations to enjoy the fireworks include Burj Park, an island overlooking Burj Khalifa, set on Burj Lake or the Waterfront Promenade lining The Dubai Mall; Burj Plaza; the 3.5km Emaar Boulevard; and other areas in Downtown Dubai. So you can go to Dubai for the New Year, or you can stay in Mumbai, bringing in New Year at home or in a hotel where you will have to stay the night, because we all know that trying to use the roads after that is tantamount to asking to have your bottom pinched.
sightings at Powai where the sprawling IIT in Mumbai has its campus. This is a virtual certainty and not surprising, because the campus is contiguous to and practically running on to land that borders the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SNGP). Cats moving across no man’s land into academic territory is understandable and we have heard plenty of stories of students on their bicycles, moving from one hostel block meeting up suddenly and upsettingly with the four-footed predators who must be as surprised as them. As one of the former students of IIT Powai revealed to us, this one particular hostel is at the very edge of the campus close to the Powai lake. At night time and if you were lucky or unlucky you could have a chance encounter with the wildlife that cohabits there.
Scarily funny
It would be funny if it were not scary. Our brainy students from IIT Powai who are completely unafraid (we think) of all things academic, are as scared of the large cats roaming their campus – the spotted variety that once made extremely expensive fur coats for the rich and famous. There have always been leopard
Cats on campus.
Nor are leopards the only form of wildlife strolling around in search of higher education. Students have had the wits scared out of them when at night they sat on the staircase thoroughly engrossed in their books, only to find the hairy arm of a monkey coming around their shoulder and two glowing eyes trying to figure out what you were up to. And then shooting out of sight when shrieks invariably broke out, for these bookish types are not necessarily very brave! Even now, monkeys are known to open doors or enter through windows and go away with loot both edible and inedible. As for crocodiles and even snakes, they have been known to come around. The IIT campus is not just a breeding ground for ideas and fine minds, but also a breeding ground – period!

tudents of the Zee Institute of Creative Arts (ZICA) in Mira Road will not be able to work on computers, at least for the next few days, the reason being that burglars broke into the institute located in Shanti Nagar and walked away with seven computers on Sunday. However, the entire act has been captured by a network of CCTV cameras installed in the training center. Three people broke into the center at about 4 pm on Sunday and decamped with seven computers, a camera and Rs. 14,000 cash. Being a holiday, the theft was de-
tected by the institute staffers on Monday morning. A complaint in this regard has been registered by ZICA-Center Director, Ranjan Shetty at the Mira Road police station. “We are scanning the footage captured by CCTV cameras to get some lead into the case,”
confirmed an investigating officer. The day-light break-in in a commercial establishment located in the busy market area of Mira Road has raised a serious question about the efficiency of the Thane (Rural) police.

complaint to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Nagpur) by the editor of a Vasai based newspaper was promptly taken cognizance of with a directive to his subordinates at Vasai to file a report and take action. The complaint states that Survey No. 26, Valiv Village, located between Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Tungareshwar wildlife area, was earlier designated as a ‘reserved forest’, with a specific order stating “Non-forest activities prohibited”. However, a building material supplier and transport contractor, Sebastian Gonsalves, allegedly in connivance with Revati Gaikar, Sub-Divisional Officer (S.D.O.) exploited natural resources from fifty acres of land, while Gaikar wrongly informed her superiors that the classification of the area being a reserved forest was wrong. The report was then presented to the Additional Divisional Commissioner of Konkan, who permitted the declassification of the hills. Gonsalves also took a letter from Dr. P.N.Munde, the then director of Borivli National Park, to prove that the hill was not a reserved forest.

he Congress, which is at receiving end from all four sides after its debacle in the four states, was yesterday blasted by its own alliance partner NCP. Sharad Pawar said that the Assembly poll results in four states indicate that people want strong leaders. Though Pawar has not taken names, his salvo is directed towards Congress president Sonia Gandhi, second in line Rahul Gandhi and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. He also called upon the Congress and other allies to ponder over the outcome which is being seen as a reflection of anger against the UPA government at the Centre.Pawar said, “Congress has suffered a jolt in the polls.

Everybody, including Congress and us, will have to think about this situation seriously. The new generation had a big role in this electoral defeat and their anger has been reflected through the ballot”. While emphasising on the importance of strong leaders, who can take quick decisions, the NCP chief said, “A ruler must be strong and one who ensures effective measures and also have the capacity to implement the decisions taken. People don’t like weak
rulers. Other forces raise their heads if this doesn’t happen”. “In this context, the example of Indira Gandhi can be given. She used to implement decisions with force. That is why, during her tenure, this jhola class (people with NGO background), which offers free advice, were not there. The jholawalla gang is putting forth new unrealistic ideas, which are having an impact on media and some people in the government”, Pawar pointed out. “In Delhi, the youth became restless after the Nirbhaya gang-rape case and sided with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in a big way”, Pawar added. Pawar’s statement has virtually created flutter in the Congress circle. So far, no congressman has reacted to his statement.
‘Centre rejected officers’ names for gallantry awards’ By A Staff Reporter
T
he Government of Maharashtra on Monday told the Bombay High Court that though a proposal had been sent to the Centre for presenting gallantry awards to police officials and members of bomb disposal squads for fighting terrorists during the 26/11 attacks, it had rejected the names. The state government had recommended the name of Police Inspector Steven Mathews Anthony for the police medal for gallantry, be-
sides 18 others of the Bomb Disposal Squad. However, the Centre did not consider them, reports PTI. This was revealed in a letter written by G.C. Yadav, Under Secretary to the Union Government in the Ministry of Home Affairs, to the state Home Ministry on November 12, 2013. A copy of this letter was placed by Government Pleader Aruna Pai before a bench headed by Justice P V Hardas, which adjourned for two weeks a PIL filed by Ketan Tirodkar demanding 'Ashok Chakra' and gallantry
awards for all the officers who fought with terrorists during the terror attacks. The court had on last occasion asked the state to inform about the steps taken to honour officials who showed bravery during the Mumbai attacks on November 26, 2008. The letter written by the Centre said though the state had recommended names of police and bomb disposal squad officers for gallantry awards, they were not considered. However, no reason was assigned why they were not considered.
Squad Chief Rakesh Maria said that not only the ATC and ATS will deployed at the venue of ‘sModi rally, but many other departments of Mumbai Police will be there too for security reasons. Sources from the ATC cell Zone VIII revealed that they have been keeping a close eye on the activities of suspicious
persons in areas like Bharat Nagar, Bandra Behram Pada, Kurla and some parts of Kalina. Indian Mujahideen Chief operative Yasin Bhatkal has visited Mumbai several times after the blasts in Mumbai and in his confession to Delhi Police, Bhatkal had revealed that many IM sleeper cells
are active in Mumbai. On October 27, serial blasts took place during the Narendra Modi’s ‘hunkar rally’ in Patna, wherein six people were killed and 83 others were seriously injured. Lakhs of peoples are expected to visit the rally in Mumbai to be held on December 22 at the MMRDA ground in BKC.

UPA forgot: ‘It could not fool people all the time’! T
HE Congress party leaders are trying their best to make out that the total failure in state elections does not reflect the corrupt, incompetent image of the UPA government. Scam after scam has erupted during the Congress rule and each time the government resorted to cover-up operations. What the government refused to see was people’s growing resentment over the continuing corrupt performance. And the UPA government kept on giving unconvincing explanations for the lack of growth. It brought in excuses regarding global happenings. And it always used ‘percentages’ to explain its failures and prove it has managed to keep floating. How it arrived at percentages in performance is not known. It was clear that it was fooling people but it forgot that it could not fool the people all the time. The poor, corrupt performance of the Centre has affected, in a big way, voting patterns across the states: It has led to the collapse of the Congress. The scenario was the worst in Rajasthan where the BJP got threefourth majority. Vasundhara Raje had a walk-over. In Madhya Pradesh, the BJP won by twothirds majority. And in Chhattisgarh too, where the BJP faced some stiff opposition, the Congress was defeated. In Delhi state, the Congress performance reflects clearly the failure of the party: It got eight seats and its chief minister Sheila Dikshit who stood against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal was defeated by a huge margin of votes. There was no attempt by the AAP to do any poll-related jugglery and deceive people. It touched on local issues: price rise – a subject which has become a stark reality. The Congress does not want to admit it but BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s aggressive poll campaign had a lot to do with its rout in four states. Rahul Gandhi who was conducting the poll campaign of the Congress evidently did not make any impression on the voters.

HE elections for state legislatures in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram and Delhi have indicated the mood of people. Many questions have come to the fore. The political parties face the challenge of finding an answer before the parliamentary polls next year. Two trends have emerged, one plus and the other minus, from these elections. The positive aspect is that more voters have come to the polling booths than ever before, nearly 75 per cent exercising their franchise. If spelled out, it means that people have expressed their ever-increasing faith in the ballot box, an essential ingredient of democratic governance. The negative side is the mudslinging. I have watched campaigns of all elections since Independence. There were fierce contests, particularly from the late sixties. Yet none, neither an individual nor a political party, ever hit below the belt.

That the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has forced his candidature on the moderate Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is understandable. But why people like Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley, who are considered left of the BJP ideology, are sharing the rostrum with Modi? L.K. Advani, who has mellowed over the years, has made it clear through his attitude that he is distant from Modi and the communal politics he represents. The BJP has hit itself on the foot. The party has been expanding its base by diluting its anti-Muslim stance. By honouring at Agra two BJP members of legislative assembly during the election campaign, the party’s base has got shrunk. The voters have seen through the smokescreen it had created. Both the MLAs were charged with the participation in the anti-Muslim riots in Gujarat in 2002 and
Semi-final contest At best, a remark like the one by Dr Ram Manohar Lohia, a socialist leader, was that Mrs Indira Gandhi, his strong opponent, was a goongi gudiya (a silent doll). There was no malice. Indulging in personal abusive remark was not considered ethical. Since then the thin line between what is moral and immoral has got erased. And it has become free for all. The current state elections are considered a semi-final contest. I shudder to imagine how low would the level of the final, the Lok Sabha elections in May 2014, go to. Political parties have to agree upon a code so that the polls are not reduced to street brawls and the candidates do not behave like the urchins. I think that the Election Commission has been too complacent and too accommodative. I have seen reports of giving warnings and asking for explanations from erring candidates. But no action has been forthcoming so far. I get the feeling that the two have come to develop a cozy relationship, the anti-thesis of independent elections. I do not doubt the veracity of elections. Yet the means are not less important than the end. My greatest concern is over the attempt to polarize the society. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi may not have played the Hindu card directly. But all his speeches underline the notion of Hindu nationalism, an anti-thesis of pluralism which is the ethos of our country.

BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar were let off by the court due to lack of concrete evidence. Their communal antecedents have only been confirmed. The results for the legislature in the five states will have no bearing on the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls. They do not indicate that the parliamentary elections will go the same way. The voters are sick and tired of non-governance by the Congress government at the centre. They are also horrified over the scams running into thousands of crores. The price rise is also a factor against the Congress. Therefore, the vote cast in favour of the BJP is a negative one. There are still no all India alternatives to the Congress and the BJP, however distasteful to most voters. Yet the most disconcerting thing that has assumed dangerous proportion is the role of money. It has been always there, but has beaten this time all the previous records.

There were 6,454 candidates in fray in the five states. Madhya Pradesh had the highest number of candidates — 2,586 for 321 seats, followed by Rajasthan with 2,087 for the 200 seats. There was a drop in Chhattisgarh — 843 contestants for 91 seats, 142 for 40 seats in Mizoram and a whopping figure of 796 for Delhi’s 70 seats. The expenditure runs into thousands of crores.
Cost per LS seat The various studies show that the cost per Lok Sabha seat is around Rs.10 crore. Seven to eight assembly constituencies constitute a Lok Sabha seat and the expense works out to Rs.1.25 crore per assembly constituency. But it is said that the minimum expenditure on an assembly seat is at least Rs. 2 crore. Adding these figures, the total expenditure by the candidates comes to Rs.13,908 crore. Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) explains: “We do not want to put all the eggs in one basket.” The campaign of Modi, the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, is reportedly financed by the corporate sector. The party cadres are said to be happy for getting the money. The meeting of captains of industry at Ahmedabad last year to support the candidature of Modi for prime ministership emphasizes their preference for him because his speeches indicate how they would have a free hand if he came to power. They should have reconsidered their stand after the surveillance by the government’s security forces, including the anti-terrorist force, of a girl he had taken ‘fancy’ to in 2004. It was not protection but a close check on whom she met or where she went. The state’s inquiry committee is a farce. There should be a judicial probe. The surveillance is linked with Modi or, probably elections, in Gujarat. The overall picture may not be affected very much. Yet what it suggests is that electoral reforms are essential for free and independent polls. There have been many committees which have proposed reforms. I recall Gandhian leader Jayaprakash Narayan making several recommendations. In fact, even the Janata Party, his creation, did not implement any one of them because Prime Minister Morarji Desai had different ideas. His personal integrity was beyond doubt, but he could not lessen the role of money in elections. That continues to affect the independence and fairness of elections even today. small; within his sphere so many souls and minds are involved; with his rise, they rise; with his fall, they fall. As his heart grows, his sphere grows; as his sympathy is withdrawn or lessened, so his sphere breaks up and scatters. If he harms those who live and move within his sphere, those dependent upon him or upon his affection, he of necessity harms himself. His house or his palace or his cottage, his satisfaction or his disgust in his environment is the creation of his own thought. ‘Sweep’ing votes IF there is any clear winner in the recent assembly elections to four major states in the heartland of our country, it is the Election Commission which did a magnificent job quietly of ensuring that the elections were held without the usual incidents of booth-capturing, intimidation of the voters, gunwielding – even in the trouble-torn Chhattisgarh. It deserves kudos for the same. However, at the same time, it is very necessary for the Commission to arm itself with adequate punitive powers beyond issuing mere notices to erring parties and persons. Otherwise the results have to be taken with a pinch of salt as in Delhi where liquor bottles, free-food coupons and money were shown to be distributed liberally for several days before the polls. The ‘common man’s’ party got away with charges of excessive poll expenditure, accepting cash from all and sundry and more damagingly, the BJP’s PM-designate made a direct attack on the election symbol of the Congress which would seem to have had a great impact on the elections but still he was allowed to wriggle out of his offensive remark with a cockend-bull story. — Dr. V. THE Congress party has suffered a humiliating defeat in Delhi. It is reduced to eight seats in the house of 70. Its best interest now lies in convincing the Aam Aadmi Party to form a government in Delhi pledging an unconditional support from outside – a mute and unflinching support for five years with full freedom to the AAP to carry out its programme. The Aam Aadmi Party also should be pragmatic and give up its obstinacy of not accepting any support because here without compromising on any of its principle. Kejriwal should not forget that his MLAs will be happier sitting on the treasury benches and his party will be more effective in carrying out its programme. From Congress’s point of view, it is best not to

THE results of the four state assemblies’ elections indicate very clearly that the exit polls as well as the presence of mammoth crowds in Narendra Modi’s rallies were 100 per cent genuine. The people have no more trust in the pseudo secular Congress, the ‘national’ party also notorious for encouraging the daily spiralling food inflation and corruption indirectly for raising its deposits in foreign banks in trillions, and completely disabled to control cross-border terrorism because of its undesired ‘soft’ treatment for unknown reasons. THE results of the mini general election results, that of Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh assembly polls, have proved that Indian voters have indeed come of age and become more intelligent. An Indian voter cannot be taken for granted. The Congress has been routed and severely snubbed and thrown out in Delhi, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. BHARATIYA Janata Party (BJP) expected victory in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh and defeat in Chhatisgarh and Delhi assembly poll shows that people have voted against the Congress Party due to price rise, corruption and various scams. I strongly feel that the rise of Aam Admi Party (AAP) in Delhi assembly poll is commendable and cannot be underestimated in future elections. On the other hand, both the BJP and Congress Party are not favourites to win majority in the 2014 general elections and have to take support from regional parties who are rising at an alarming rate and are making wave in every state. The result of recently concluded assembly elections in four states is a warning to Congress and BJP who cannot take people for granted and dictate their own terms and conditions. The urgent need of the hour is that all the political parties irrespective of their status must come forward to control the rising prices and other illegal activities for the benefit of the people.
HEARTY congratulations to BJP for a comprehensible win in three of the four states. This is the first time in 15 years of Delhi Government that Congress is been pushed back with huge numbers where AAP came as a bombshell and a potential indisputable exertion towards forming leadership in more than 20 seats in the state. BJP rules the roost anyway. It was the sweat endeavour of BJP leader Narendra Modi, campaigning luminously in all locations along with his party members serving them to pull off an astonishing triumph. It’s time now for the BJP to fulfill the obligations they had mentioned in their manifesto. Can they work on Lokpal too? Congratulations to the voters in these states for their smart and attempted move to bring in the government which they feel will work wonders for them. Congratulations to Arvind Kejriwal for the lead against Congress (if not victory), coming from nowhere and picking up so many seats and creating history in politics.

sessions court on Monday sentenced a 34-yearold man, who had attacked a female student, mistaking her as his own wife near Dadar railway station last year. According to the prosecution, the accused, Vijay Sanglekar, had attacked the woman as he was enraged with his wife for filing a divorce case, reports PTI. Filing a case of harassment against Sanglekar and his family for demanding dowry, his wife had their house in Sindhudurg district last year. She also filed a divorce petition, which had enraged Sanglekar. She then came to stay with her parents in Nalasopara in Thane district. In December 2012, he ar-

On December 17 last year, armed with a sickle, the accused came to Dadar station to kill his wife. However, he mistook the 25-year-old student of chartered accountancy student Sonal Lapadia as his wife and attacked her on her face, neck and hands. During the court trial, public prosecutor Shankar Yerende examined around 10 witnesses, including Sonal, Sanglekar's wife and medical experts to prove his case. Judge U.B. the much-delayed anti-graft law, he had said earlier. Recalling his earlier fast in Delhi for anti-graft watchdog, Hazare said, "Sonia Gandhi wrote a letter saying that Government is ready to bring Janlokpal Bill and said please end your fast. I trusted her and ended my fast. "I didn't know that this UPA government will betray the public and me," he said. Lamenting that despite a written assurance the Government had not enacted the law even after a lapse of two years, Hazare said when people came out on the streets and his hunger strike was underway, the Janlokpal Bill was passed in one day in Lok Sabha. After that, the bill went to the Standing Committee, then to the Rajya Sabha and to a Select Committee, he said. "I will sit on hunger strike from Tuesday and continue my fast till the passage of the Janlokpal Bill in Parliament," he said. "This bill came to Rajya Sabha after being passed everywhere and only discussions on it were left. It has now been over a year and the bill is just lying in the Rajya Sabha and there are 71 Congress MPs there. The bill is still stuck there," Hazare said. He said he got several letters from the Government that the bill will be brought in the winter session of Parliament in 2012.
Later, he got another communication, saying the bill will come in the Budget session and then a promise was made that it will figure in the Monsoon session. "The Monsoon session has also gone by. And that is why, we are left with no other option. That is why from tomorrow I will fast at Ralegan Siddhi," he said. "Our fight will continue for the right to reject, right to recall and for the creation of a corruption-free India," he said. He also slammed Opposition parties for not pursuing the cause of Janlokpal Bill effectively. While congratulating Arvind Kejriwal and his Aam Aadmi Party on the success in their maiden tryst with electoral politics in Delhi Assembly polls, Hazare maintained his stand of not supporting any political party including AAP. Hazare acknowledged AAP's efforts in bringing about a change in the country's political culture and appreciated Kejriwal's stand of rejecting opportunistic politics by deciding to play the role of a constructive opposition. Maintaining that he was not averse to receiving support of political parties including AAP in his campaign for Janlokpal, Hazare, however, made it clear he would not share a platform with political leaders.

Postpartum depression, colloquially known as the baby blues, affects 5-20% of new mothers. Rhea Dhanbhoora & Priyanka Singh help you stay informed by telling you what it is, how to recognise the signs and how you can suffer from it even as a new dad “I felt as if I had jumped out of an airplane with no parachute and all I could do was wait for rock bottom to arrive — but it never did. I just kept falling.”
T
hat’s a line from a heartfelt, informative article by a woman named Elizabeth Reinke, which was published in the Huffington Post last month. Reading the article, about the mum-of-one’s struggle with postpartum depression made us realise that there isn’t enough knowledge or support for this form of depression for new mothers. So, we spoke to a number of experts in the city and asked them to tell us what postpartum depression is, why some women don’t realise they have it and how to deal with it.

gynecologist from Kohinoor Hospital, tells us that not all new mothers feel inexplicable joy when they see their newborn. “Many new mothers experience the baby blues after childbirth, which commonly include mood swings and crying spells that fade quickly. Some new mothers experience a more severe, long-lasting form of depression known as postpartum depression. Rarely, an extreme form of postpartum depression known as postpartum psychosis develops after childbirth,” she explains. According to program director of Profert IVF Fertility Clinic, Dr. Jaydeep Tank, around 5-20% women suffer from this type of depression. If you feel a little blue after your delivery, there’s no need to panic immediately, because this usually lasts for a few months and around 60% (not to be confused with mothers who end up suffering from the condition) of all new mothers will experience it. If it does last longer however, you should Continued on pg 14 «

contact your doctor and talk to someone about how you’re feeling. Too many new mothers suffer in silence, which leads to more severe problems later on.
Around 3-10% of men experience depression during the antenatal and postnatal period. People think that men experience it as a result of, or in conjunction with, their partner’s depression, but
Why yOu may nOt see it Apart from the fact that not all new mothers are looking for symptoms of depression after they give birth, there are a number of reasons why most women don’t even realise when they are suffering from postpartum depression. As Dr. Vinay Mundra, consultant psychiatrist at P. D. Hinduja Hospital tells us, the symptoms are not widely understood or spoken about, so it’s often hard to pinpoint them. Often, we label it as weakness or the aftereffects of a particularly stressful delivery. There’s also another side to why women don’t see the symptoms and we spoke to Dr. Shweta Upadhaya, consultant gynecologist at Sai Snehdeep Hospital, to find out more about it. She explained that several women assume its normal to feel like this when coping with a baby. “They worry about what other people will think and feel ashamed to admit that they’re not enjoying motherhood. Some women believe that having post-natal depression makes them bad parents,” she says. It’s important, she tells us, to realise that while as women we can hide our personal feelings and care for the baby perfectly, internal misery is hard to deal with after a point. Even if everyone around you thinks you’re fine, if you don’t feel okay, there’s absolutely no shame in asking for help, so don’t shy away from talking about it.
men can experience this independently. Although PPD in mothers is the strongest predictor of partners having it too, it doesn’t always happen this way. Depression in new fathers has been found to begin before the birth of their child, with minimal recovery by the end of the first year. There’s also evidence that men’s depression increases between six weeks and six months after childbirth. A study found that three out of 10 men were depressed at six weeks and that their depression got worse during the next six months. There is also evidence that anxiety might be a problem for some men during the antenatal and postnatal period. New fathers don’t see a doctor or talk about it, which is why problems are often picked up in women and not men.
A lack of love for your child. Hopelessness and suicidal thoughts. l Lack of confidence in handling or taking care of your child. l l
cOPinG With it Several women who have dealt with this problem have come out later saying that they wish they had not kept it under wraps when they first realised what was happening. So, even if you have a tiny inkling that you don’t feel your best, talk to someone about it. Coping with postpartum depression is hard, but not impossible and as Dr. Dimple says the first step is identifying and accepting that you suffer from the condition. You should also inform your gynecologist if you have had any previous history with depression or if you’ve been depressed during your pregnancy. Once you’ve recognised the signs, don’t hesitate to seek help. “Counselling helps with mild cases. In severe cases, anti-depressants need to be prescribed. The medications are mild and can often be given with breastfeeding. Other factors such as nutrition, diet, sleep and reducing external stress factors, need to be also looked into,” says Dr. Jaydeep. That’s why, the best way to deal with this is to talk about it.
lOOKinG in frOm the Outside So, you haven’t had a baby, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t know everything you need to know about this form of depression. After all, you could be family or friends of a new mother who doesn’t know what she’s suffering from — if you can identify it, you can help her cope. Recognising the signs and symptoms of postpartum depression in a new mother is important, because as friends and family, you will be able to identify a change in her personality that a new mother may not see. Dr. Vinay stresses that it’s extremely important for you, as members of her support system, to help her feel secure, settled and let her know that she has someone to talk to if she needs to. You need to make sure that she has the help she needs, even if she doesn’t recognise the need or refuses it (as some women with severe depression might). “Though most women will get better without any treatment within three to six months, treatment is important to reduce suffering. Partners, family and friends can help a lot by spending time with a new mother; they can support and encourage her. They can help her with the practical things. Talking to a trained counsellor or therapist can help a lot too,” adds Dr. Shweta.
>> If you’re still feeling disconnected and depressed months after your delivery, don’t hesitate to talk to someone about it
siGns & symPtOms As a new mother, you’re going to go through several ups and downs and mood swings. After all, your hormones have undergone a big turnaround and you’re still dealing with the effects of all the changes in your body, along with taking care of your baby. While all that is normal, it can take a grave turn when you find it difficult to bond with your baby and can’t tell anyone about it. Dr. Dimple says, “Some women suffer from insomnia, show signs of irritability and anger and in extreme cases, even have suicidal thoughts and lose sexual interest. She may also withdraw from family and friends and not cooperate with taking care of the baby and herself.” All of this is coupled with feelings of shame and guilt, stopping you from talking about it. But, it’s very important to recognise the signs early. Dr. Vinay tells us what symptoms to watch out for: Loss of sleep. Inability to eat. l Exhaustion and fatigue. l Emotional symptoms. l Emotional sadness. l l
celebrity sufferers Postpartum depression can strike anyone and even if you’ve had a child before, it can hit you on your second delivery. Sometimes, it doesn’t even show up in the initial months, so you don’t realise till your baby is around 6-months-old. Even world famous celebrities have suffered from it. These celebrity moms had no qualms about sharing motherhood’s notso-flattering side with the world. Here is what they had to say about experiencing this depression.
Kendra Wilkinson: “It got pretty bad, (but) not to the point where I would harm my family. I was a great mom and did what I needed to but I was definitely very depressed. (Motherhood is) a big change in life and it happened overnight.”
>> Gwyneth Paltrow is one of the celebrities who suffered from postpartum depression
Gwyneth Paltrow: “I couldn’t connect with my son the way that I had with my daughter and I couldn’t understand why. I couldn’t connect to anyone. I felt like a zombie. I felt very detached. I just didn’t know what was wrong
with me. My husband actually said, ‘Something’s wrong. I think you have postnatal depression.’” marie Osmond: “When I had postpartum, I remember vividly driving that car and thinking … how people would be better off without me,” she told Oprah Winfrey. “I really believed that.” courteney cox: “I went through a really hard time — not right after the baby, but when she turned six months,” she told USA Today, admitting to having had suicidal
thoughts. “I couldn’t sleep. My heart was racing. And I got really depressed. I went to the doctor and found out my hormones had been pummeled.” melissa rycroft: “I was just going through the motions and I just couldn’t figure out why if I had everything in the world to be happy and thankful for, I just couldn’t feel happy,” she told Celebrity Baby Scoop. “The doctor actually said that was classic postpartum depression but we just don’t hear about it.”

ith the city in the grips of dengue, a condition which doesn’t have any specific medication that can cure it as yet, you would be forgiven if you’re running scared of contracting this mosquito-borne illness. With there being no medicinal way out to treat this condition, many people are now turning to a traditional remedy — papaya leaves. We find out whether this treatment really does help with dengue and if it is worth affronting your taste buds (note: the juice tastes horrendous!) or not.
With the popularity of papaya leaf juice steadily rising in order to help with dengue, there have been a many studies done to find out whether there’s any truth in this traditional treatment. One such study was conducted by the Indian Institute of Forest Management on five patients suffering from dengue, to find out the effects (if any) of the juice. The study found that the platelet count in all five patients increased within a day of consuming the bitter green juice. Furthermore, the patients’ overall health also saw an improvement. Another study, conducted on mice in Malaysia, also observed that feeding them papaya leaf extracts resulted in an increased platelet count. Yet another study, published in the Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical

Biomedicine, reported that administering papaya leaf juice to a 45-year-old patient suffering from dengue saw the patient’s platelet and white blood cell counts return to normal within four days.
While studies do seem to indicate that papaya leaf juice does have the health benefits of helping dengue, what do experts in our city have to say? Miral Sheth, consulting dietician from Kohinoor Hospital, says, “Papaya leaf juice works as an antioxidant as it helps increase the thrombotytes of the blood. This may lead to a rise in the blood platelet count. Miral says she would recommend 25ml of the juice, twice a day. Nutritionist at Gold’s Gym, Rakhee Todankar agrees saying, “Papaya leaves are known to be packed with enzymes which normalise platelet count, improve clotting, liver function and repair the damage to the liver, helping you recover from the disease. However, Miral also points out that papaya juice alone cannot treat dengue. She adds, “A patient needs to increase his/her intake of fluids such as juices, coconut water, along with limited solid food and prescribed medication. Rakhee on the other hand, believes that there isn’t sufficient evidence available on the topic. She recommends visiting a doctor, who can then guide you accordingly.

Preventing Gangrene And Amputation ! the only treatment is cutting of the affected Save Legs-Save Life ofpartGangrene, of the leg Amputation. Kanubhai Patel who has been a smoker for the last 30 years started getting pain in the his left leg on walking about 200 meters, and he had to stop for a few minutes to rest before he could walk again. He noticed that the skin around his left ankle was getting darker, and his foot was cold all the time. Soon the severity of the pain increased to such an extent that he could not sleep at night. He finally consulted a doctor, who performed tests which revealed that almost all the blood vessels in the left leg below his knees were blocked. The vessels were very tiny, and surgery was not possible. He was advised urgent amputation of the left leg below the knee to relieve the pain and to prevent the onset of gangrene. Mr. More, an obese 54 year old bank employee is a diabetic since last 14 years. His blood sugar has never been under control, and he often neglects to take his medicines. One month ago he suddenly developed severe pain, swelling and redness in the right leg and foot, along with fever. He was diagnosed to have Gangrene of the toes of the foot “Cellulitis which is an infection of the skin often seen in diabetic patients. In spite of medicines, he developed gradually blackening of the great toe of the right foot, which became extremely painful. Medical tests revealed that he had developed severe blockages in the main artery of the right leg in the thigh, and that he would need amputation of the great toe and even more of the limb if required. Both Mr Patel and Mr More suffer from a medical condition called Peripheral Arterial Occlusive Disease (PAOD). This is a fairly common condition, which affects millions of people worldwide, and is responsible for thousands of amputations of limbs every year. Luckily, both Mr Patel and Mr More were evaluated at the Peripheral Vascular Clinic and underwent immediate non surgical treatment using balloon Angioplasty and stent placement in their blocked arteries. Major amputation was avoided in both the patients. Peripheral arterial occlusive disease is the narrowing of the blood vessels called arteries, which supply fresh blood carrying oxygen to the legs. The narrowing occurs due to the gradual accumulation of fatty material in the arteries the common causes are diabetes, tobacco intake, high cholesterol levels, and old age. Due to the decreased blood supply, the muscles of the legs start paining during walking or climbing stairs this is called “Claudication or “Angina of the Legs. In severe cases, the tissues of the legs will get permanently damaged, leading to Gangrene. In the majority of cases
PAOD can be easily diagnosed. The pulse in the legs is either weak or absent. A simple test which accurately demonstrates the blockages is a Sonography test called “ Arterial Color Doppler test. This test not only shows the level of blocks, but also the severity of block. Depending on the results of this test, the specialist will decide whether the patient can be treated by medicines, or will need advanced methods of management. In the past the only treatment available for blockages of the legs was Vascular Surgery wherein a surgeon would perform a surgical Bypass of the blockage using an artificial graft or a vein of the leg. However, with modern technology, this condition can be treated successfully without surgery. Interventional treatment, using balloon angioplasty and the use of stents, is now the most common method used to treat the blocks in the arteries of the legs. Dr Padaria, Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist has been treating patients using these techniques since 1991, and has performed countless such procedures in patients suffering from Gangrene. Along with Interventional After Amputation of the toes procedures, doctors also advice the use of Hyperbaric Oxygen treatment in patients suffering from severe blockages of the arteries in the legs, especially in those with impending gangrene. The patients are placed in a special chamber, during which the entire body is exposed to pure oxygen delivered at high pressures. This treatment leads to a high concentration of oxygen in the patient's blood, which is then delivered to the damaged tissues, helping in accelerating the healing process. Treatment is usually delivered for about one hour daily, and can be done on an OPD basis. Jaslok Hospital is the first Private hospital in Mumbai which has made this unique treatment available to its patients, and in the last 5 years hundreds of patients have been successfully treated. Hyperbaric oxygen is especially useful in patients with diabetic foot, diabetic ulcers, early gangrene and cellulitis. In summary, if you suffer from symptoms of pain in the legs on walking, and are diabetic, smoker, tobacco user, or have heart disease or high cholesterol, do consult a doctor. Let him examine the pulses of your legs. If they are weak, you may be advised further tests which will accurately tell you whether you suffer from Peripheral arterial olcclusive disease. Prevention is always better than cure and Amputation is to be avoided at all costs. Dr. Shoaib Padaria. Instead of fighting with everyone around you, tearing your hair out and suffering from stress headaches, take this quiz and read our ways to deal with seasonal stress below. Do you suffer from constant headaches during the festive season? a) It happens every year during festive season. b) Occasionally, but I think it’s the weather. c) Not unless I’m unwell.

tAke youR vItAMINs Pop a vitamin C tablet daily. Since it’s water soluble, it’s absorbed by your body immediately. Vitamin C strengthens your immune system and is known to help increase your platelet count. You can continue to take this vitamin even after you’ve recovered.
Whenever you enter a dusty place, do your eyes become watery and start itching? a. Yes. b. No. Do you develop a runny, itchy and stuffy nose when you are in a dusty area? a. Yes. b. No. While dusting your house, do you sneeze often?
When in a dusty area, do you feel that your throat is congested? a. Yes. b. No. Do you suffer from headaches whenever you’re in a dusty area? a. Yes. b. No.
Mostly As You are definitely suffering from a dust allergy. Experiencing a runny, itchy and stuffy nose, eye irritation, sneezing, throat congestion, difficulty breathing and developing a headache right after being exposed to dust are all signs of a dust allergy. In extreme cases, a dust allergy can leave you with an asthma problem or eczema, which is an inflammatory skin disease. The best strategy is to reduce your exposure to dust. Large numbers of dust mites can gather in mattresses, bedding and upholstered furniture. Start in the bedroom, where you probably spend the most time. Wear a mask while cleaning. In extreme cases, you might need to consult your doctor.
IRoN FIst If you’re also suffering from anemia, a dropping platelet count can be dangerous. To boost your intake of iron and to feel better, include iron rich foods such as spinach, liver and guava into your diet.
Mostly Bs Since you don’t experience any of the symptoms that have been mentioned in the quiz, you are out of the line of fire and aren’t suffering from a dust allergy. This might also be because you don’t spend too much time in and around dusty areas and keep your home dust-free.
veggIe good IdeA Carrots, beets and celery are known for their platelet increasing properties. However, to get the maximum benefits, it’s best to eat them raw. If you’ve got dengue, you might not be able too eat them as they are, so it’s okay to juice the veggies or add them to a soup.

Rest It out Your body needs rest to function properly. So, make sure you get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night. Dengue can really knock you out so an additional nap can also help make you feel better and help your body increase its platelet levels.
Mostly Bs You love planning for the festivities and while they do stress you out a little (who wouldn’t be stressed with the amount they have to do to get everything in order!), you’re mostly doing fine. Just remember not to let high expectations ruin things for you. Let things run smoothly and make the most of anything that seems to go wrong. Mostly cs Congratulations, you haven’t fallen prey to the evil seasonal stress that inflicts most people planning for festive season. Either you just don’t care, or you’re living it up exactly the way you’re supposed to this time of year. Enjoy yourself — but remember not to end up being totally uncaring because it is the season of giving. And, a little planning never hurt anyone!

Mostly As You tell yourself that this is the best time of year, but you put yourself under so much stress trying to get everything right, that it actually turns out being the worst time of year for your health. You have to learn to loosen up and let go a little bit, or you won’t have any fun at the end of the day.

Have realistic expectations: Need to make 20 Christmas baskets for family and friends and then plan three parties? Don’t do it! Give yourself a little break by having more realistic expectations of the season or enlisting a little help from your family and friends. Budget everything: Spending too much money may make you feel good in the moment (several studies show that buying things for other people makes you happy) but looking at your empty bank account in January won’t give you the same good feeling. Budget things properly so that you don’t have to deal with the stress of rejected cards and empty wallets. Get enough sleep: This is the most important factor. It will help you look your best and feel your best — as well as give you a little downtime in between all the running around and planning. Exercise: This is a season when you’ll feel most tempted to give up your exercise regime, but it’s the one time of year when it’s most important to keep it going. Exercise is a great stress buster and can actually help you get rid of some of the stress you’re feeling. Make lists: Even Santa makes a list! Don’t commit everything to memory or you’ll end up driving yourself up the wall, going back and forth because you’ve forgotten things. Keep lists of everything you need to do and tick things off when they’re completed to avoid any confusion.

In 2015, the number will rise to 106,214 and in 2020 an estimated 123,634 women will be afflicted by the condition. Bringing awareness and prevention together is Pinkathon, India’s first ever multi-city, 10km run for women. The focus of the international running event is to encourage women’s health and fitness and create much-needed awareness about breast cancer. « Know more: natural mosquito repellents Want to stay safe from mosquitoes without coming in contact with possibly dangerous chemicals? Dev Goswami tells you about natural herbs and leaves that will keep the pesky pests away In Mumbai, mosquitoes are the bane of many. From gardens and parks to the al-fresco seating of a café and even your home, they are everywhere! Staying away from them is one of the best ways to prevent dengue and malaria. But, how do you do that? We give you a few natural mosquito-repellent options:
better than that of a mosquito coil. All you need to do is burn a few neem leaves and let the fumes spread in a particular area. The fumes will keep the mosquito away. A neat BBQ party trick — throw a handful of neem leaves into the BBQ pit and say goodbye to mosquito bites.
Grind a few garlic pieces in the mixer. Mix the garlic juice along with the tiny pieces of garlic in water and store it in a spray bottle. Using a large amount of water will ensure that you don’t go around smelling like garlic. But, if the smell does bother you, just add a drop of any essence of your choice.
neem: This is one of the most common and easily available leaf that will help keep mosquitoes away. While they can’t be termed pleasant smelling, their odour is definitely
garlic: Yes, we know that you don’t want to be caught with garlic on your breath. So, we aren’t going to tell you to eat it. What you can do instead is make a mosquito repelling spray.
lavender: The essential oil of lavender is known to work well to keep mosquitoes away. Get your hands on the essential oil, mix it with almond and coconut oil and apply it on your
skin before you go out. An added benefit of this mixture is that your skin will be moisturised — something which is much needed during winter. lemon grass: No need to eat it, apply it or spray it. All you need to do is to plant lemon grass in a pot and keep in your windows or the balcony. Lemon grass contains citronella oil which has a strong scent which will keep the mosquitoes away. A good idea would be to have such plants in your building compound.

dear barbara, My teeth have been yellow ever since I was a child. I don’t smoke or drink coffee, have a healthy diet and brush and floss regularly. I even get my teeth cleaned professionally. But, they never look as pearly white as compared to the smiles I see in magazines and on television. I don’t smile widely and even mumble because I’m ashamed of my teeth. What should I do? — Jasdeep singh, mahim dear Jasdeep, No one has pure white teeth, so don’t use television and media as your basis for comparison. Dentists do have teeth whitening procedures that can help. Although yellow teeth are usually a sign of a bad diet or poor dental hygiene, if you’ve always had teeth like this, it could be due to genetic factors or ill-formed enamel. Visit your dentist to see if there are any other underlying reasons. Apart from flossing and brushing regularly (but not too hard, you don’t want to strip off the remnant enamel), you can opt for bleaching and whitening treatments.

With several misconceptions shrouding dental implants, Shirley Mistry tells you all you need to know before you skip dentures and opt for dental implants instead

>> Dilated or broken capillaries can make the skin around your nose red dear barbara, The skin around my nose is always red. At first, I thought it was because I was suffering from cold, but even now that I’m completely fine, the skin is always red. Even if I use concealer and foundation, it always looks slightly darker than the rest of my skin. What can I do about it? — riya shah, navi mumbai dear riya, The skin around your nose is very delicate, so it could get red because of too much sun or even spicy food. Some people have combination skin with redness and a little flaking, but it can also be caused by oil absorbing products. The skin around your nose is drier, so these products tend to seep down and get trapped there, drying it out and reddening it further. If you use acne products, don’t use them on that area and remember to be very gentle while cleansing. It could also be caused by dilated or broken capillaries near that area, for which there are several treatments available. You should consult a dermatologist though because sometimes it may be a sign of a skin condition.
hile dentures have been a life saver for many, dental implants take technology a notch higher. Although dentures are not permanent, implants are. Also, they are easier to maintain as compared to dentures. Dentures definitely cost less, but in the long run, dental implants work out to be much more economical as their maintenance costs are actually lower. With the basics out of the way, read on as we deal with some common concerns regarding dental implants.
Who is eligible? To put it simply, anyone who is healthy enough to undergo a tooth extraction is eligible to undergo the procedure required to insert dental implants. However, to find out if implants will suit your needs and what type of implants to opt for, visit your dentist for a thorough examination. Also, in rare cases, some medical conditions don’t comply with implants, so check with your doctor before you choose them. Another major factor that determines feasibility is the amount and location of bone available.
What is the procedure? For the placement of a dental implant, the dentist will insert a titanium screw in your jaw bone and then create a mould which is then sent to a lab. The lab produces a permanent prosthetic tooth
that is later attached to the screw. This is why implants are more stable as compared to dentures. Depending on the type, dentures stay attached with dental adhesive, suction from the upper palate or via clips that attach themselves to your neighbouring teeth. Depending on the complexity and number of implants being placed, the procedure can take anywhere between 30 minutes to a few hours. The entire placement process takes a considerable amount of time. First, the patient needs between six to 12 weeks to heal, so that the screw can bond with the jawbone. After this, the crown is attached to the screw. Finally, the permanent crown goes on top, completing the procedure.
is the procedure painful? Anesthesia during the procedure and medication to relieve the pain postoperation takes care of the discomfort. But, it will take four or five days before you feel better. However, this is a general estimate and depending on individual cases and your body’s ability to cope and recover, the time frame will vary.
hoW do i take care of my implants? Here is the good part. Unlike dentures, implants are a substitute for natural
teeth in every sense. So, take care of them just as you would take care of your natural teeth. Brush and floss well and make sure you visit your dentist regularly. Post the insertion of the implants, the dentist will give you a schedule for follow-up visits to ensure nothing is amiss. Make sure you don’t miss an appointment.
can any dentist give me implants? Technically, yes. Any qualified dentist procedures the perform can needed for dental implants. However, we suggest you do your own research before picking a doctor, as many of them may not have much experience in performing the procedure, even though they know what needs to be done in theory.
is this an experimental procedure? Most certainly not. Dental implants are a more recent procedure as compared to dentures; however, there are years of proper research, studies and technology to back it. Given the current state of advanced technology employed during the treatment, it is in no way experimental. While no one can predict a 100% success rate as far as medical procedures are concerned, dental implants do have a rather high success rate.

P
ATNA/MUMBAI: Non-BJP Opposition parties and NDA ally Shiv Sena on Monday said a ‘strong’ anti-Congress mood was reflected in the outcome of the recent Assembly polls even as former saffron ally JD(U) rubbished the ‘Modi factor’ in BJP winning three of the four states. JD(U) leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar at the same time said people will prefer a third party if there is an alterative to Congress and BJP and pointed to the spectacular showing of the fledgling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Delhi Assembly elections. Kumar while agreeing that the result of the assembly polls in four states was ‘anti-Congress’ said there is no reason for BJP to ‘jump in joy’ which was evident in its ‘below par’ performance in Delhi. Shiv Sena hailed the win of its ally BJP in three states and said it is a step towards ‘revolution’ and also praised AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal for his party’s stunning debut. Taking a dig at the Congress, which got a drubbing in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Delhi, the Sena in an editorial in
party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ said the results showed how weak the base of the Congress has become. The CPI(M) politburo said BJP was the beneficiary of the “strong anti-Congress mood” barring in Delhi where the AAP emerged as a “credible alternative”. CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury was of the view that people were angry with the policies of the Congress and in search of an alternative. “There is no doubt that the results in Assembly elections in four states are anti-Congress. But there is no reason for BJP to jump in joy,” Kumar told PTI in Patna. “There is no wave in favour of BJP... The results show that BJP performance will be dismal in the Lok Sabha elections.” “The gamble BJP took (by appointing Narendra Modi as its prime ministerial candidate) has doomed it ... Delhi is the test case of this,” Kumar who led JD(U) to sever ties with BJP after 17 years over the elevation of Modi said. Referring to poll results in Delhi, he said it threw up a ‘below par’ performance by BJP when they should have easily gained two-third majority in the event of rout of Congress.

No celebrations on Sonia b’day N
EW DELHI: As Congress President Sonia Gandhi turned 67 on Monday, the usually buzzing party office on Akbar Road and her 10 Janpath Road residence bore a deserted look with hardly any kind of celebrations that are seen every year. The area outside the party office and her residence had more mediapersons and policemen than visitors and supporters. On Sunday, the party said that Gandhi will not be celebrating her birthday in view of the demise of Nelson Mandela. The country is observing a five-day state mourn-
ing since Friday as a mark of respect to the late South African leader. Party sources insisted that the decision was not linked to the assembly election results. Brijalal Thakur (51), a Badarpur resident, who has been selling accessories like Congress flags, badges, scarfs, muffler, diaries and directories outside the party office and Gandhi’s residence, however, held the party’s defeat as reason for non-celebrations and his low business. Until noon, he said he was able to sell only two directories, of which one was of Congress while
other was a government directory. “There were no people today. The place is usually buzzing on Sonia Gandhi’s birthday, but today it is deserted. Party haar gayi na, iskeliye (the party’s defeat is the reason),” Thakur said. Even Durga Prasad (40), a resident of Khajuri and a self-confessed die-hard Congress supporter who has been selling party accessories outside its office for his livelihood since 2001 said, “Whenever, the party does good, we are able to sell off things, but if results are like yesterdays then we have a bad day.”

SC issues notice to Subrata Roy on contempt petition N
EW DELHI: In fresh trouble for Sahara group chief Subrata Roy, the Supreme Court on Monday asked why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against him for allegedly interfering in 2G scam probe. Issuing notice to him on a contempt petition by an Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) Investigating Officer in the the multi-crore scam, the apex court held that the plea was maintainable. Roy is already facing the heat for not refunding investors money as directed by the apex court in a separate case and has been barred from leaving the country. A bench of justices G.S. Singhvi and K.S. Radhakrishnan also issued notices to two journalists working with Sahara Group — Upendra Rai and Subodh Jain — who had allegedly threatened and blackmailed
the officer, PTI reports. The court said that allegation of the officer Rajeshwar Singh is of “very serious nature” and rejected the contention of Roy and his employees that the contempt plea is not maintainable as it was not filed without the consent of the Attorney General. It said that jurisdiction of the Supreme Court under the Constitution is independent of the Contempt of Courts Act and its powers cannot be “denuded, restricted or limited” by the Act. “We are, therefore, of the view that the petition filed under the above mentioned provisions is perfectly maintainable and this Court has got a constitutional obligation to examine the truth of the allegations as to whether the respondents are attempting to derail the investigation which is being monitored by this Court.

Company took the initiative of establishing local manufacturing units due to higher taxes on imported car by local government in these countries. We believe that these initiatives would aid Company’s volumes as well as margins going forward. We reiterate our “BUY” recommendation on Tata Motors with TP of Rs 462 per share.
Nomura calls a ‘Buy’ on ITC CMP: Rs. 313
Target Rs. 392
ITC’s 1QFY14 numbers were 2.4% below our estimates at the PAT level, but the company delivered solid performance on two key parameters. First, cigarette business EBIT grew by 18% y-y with margins up 590 bps y-y. Second, FMCG business delivered 18.4% y-y revenue growth, which indicates continued momentum across the business, although there was some slowdown visible in personal products. Overall, we believe ITC remains on track to deliver high-teens EBIT growth in the cigarette business. ITC’s cigarettes business has delivered consistent 18-20% EBIT growth over the past six years, despite rising taxes, tightening taxation and rising competition. We attribute the EBIT growth to price inelasticity of cigarettes, strong brand recall and ITC’s unmatched distribution network. We believe ITC’s unmatchable strength in the core cigarettes business combined with its ability to quickly scale up new businesses like food and soaps make the stock a compelling long-term idea. We reaffirm our ‘Buy’ rating and raise our TP to Rs 392, implying 17% upside potential from current levels. ITC currently trades at 24.7x FY15F P/E (EPS: Rs 13.6), and despite its brand strength and consistent earnings, it trades at an 8-9% discount to the sector. We maintain ITC as our preferred pick in the consumer space. Volume growth should be in line with our and consensus expectations at ~1 per cent, but additional pricing taken in August is likely to help the company report more improvement in margins for the rest of FY14F. This is a key positive and one that should ensure the company is able to deliver mid-teens EBIT growth in the cigarette business this year. We see limited downside risks to our earnings number for this year and the company remains our top pick in the sector among large caps. The stock trades at a P/E multiple of 25.3x on FY15F earnings of Rs 13.57, which is significantly cheaper than HUL at a P/E of 34.8x on FY15F EPS of Rs 18.44 and also some of the other mid-cap consumer names. Valuations: Our target price is Rs 392. We value the company using a sumof-the-parts valuation methodology. We value the core cigarettes business at Rs 282 a share based on a P/E multiple of 26x on on FY15E earnings. Other SoTP valuations: Hotels business at 22x, which gives a value of Rs 5 a share; the Paper Business EV/EBIT of 8x, which gives a value of Rs 13 a share; New Ventures at 4x sales, which gives a value of Rs 71 a share; the Agri Business at 1x sales, which gives a value of Rs 8 a share; and the Cash and Liquid assets of Rs 13 a share.

Proposal To Classify Banks As Systemically Important Is Credit Positive, Says Moody’s

L
ast Monday, the Reserve Bank of India released a discussion paper outlining potential criteria to identify domestic systemically important banks (D-SIBs) that would be required to hold additional loss absorbency buffers beyond the minimum capital ratios required for all Indian banks. If the proposals are implemented, they would be credit positive for banks identified as DSIBs because these banks would be required to have capital buffers that exceed what they would have had otherwise, says Moody’s in a just released report. According to it, based on the criteria contained in the proposal, we consider the country’s largest public - sector bank by assets, State Bank of India (Baa3 stable, D+/ba1 negative 5 ), and the largest private - sector bank by assets, ICICI Bank Limited (Baa3 stable, D+/baa 3 stable), clear candidates to receive the D - SIB designation. Other public - sector banks likely to receive the D - SIB designation are Bank of Baroda (Baa3 stable, D/ba2 negative), Punjab National Bank (Baa3 stable, D /ba3 stable), Bank of India (Baa3 stable, D/ba2 negative) and Canara
Bank (Baa3 stable, D/ba2 negative). Among private - sector banks, we expect HDFC Bank Limited (Baa3 stable, D+/baa3 stable) and Axis Bank Ltd. (Baa3 stable, D+/baa3 stable) to receive the D - SIB designation. The discussion paper requests comments from banks, other institutions and the public by 31 December. The RBI will finalize the criteria and begin classifying banks as D - SIBs starting in August 2015, with additional surcharges applying to the banks starting 1 April 2016. All banks with assets (including off balance - sheet assets) of at least 2% of GDP will be part of the initial sample of banks for computation of systemic importance (see Exhibit 1). In addition, the five largest foreign banks, which would fall below the 2% limit, would also be part of the initial sample. Banks in the initial sample would need to submit additional data to the RBI to determine if they are to be classified as D - SIBs. Based on quantitative rankings and qualitative assessments, the RBI would then place each D - SIB into one of five buckets (mostly in line with the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision’s guidelines) that would indicate the bank’s relative systemic
importance. The proposed criteria in the discussion paper include size, interconnectedness, substitutability, and complexity, with size weighted 40% and other criteria weighted 20% in the overall score of importance. From there, banks would be required to hold additional common equity Tier 1 (CET1) of 0.2% 1.0% of risk - weighted assets (RWA). Initially, the RBI will also ensure that no ban k falls into the bucket requiring 1% of additional CET1, meaning an additional requirement of 0.8% would be the highest. This would incentivize D - SIBs in the second highest bucket not to increase their systemic importance. In case a bank falls into the highest bucket, the RBI would add another category with higher capital surcharges. Additional capital would be particularly beneficial for the public sector banks because their Tier 1 ratios were 7.7% - 10.1% as of March, which is low compared with larger private - sector banks, whose Tier 1 ratios were 11.1% - 12.8% as of March 2013. To meet the additional capital requirements, we expect public - sector banks designated as D - SIBs to rely on a combination of government capital injections and external capital raising.
HSBC Sees Fiscal Deficit Breaching 5% Mark In FY14 By A Business Reporter
F
oreign lender HSBC today said the Government’s fiscal deficit target of 4.8% for FY14 is likely to be breached as the revenue growth has slowed, while expenditure has gone up in the first half of the fiscal. Finance Minister P Chidambaram has been repeatedly stressing he will meet the fiscal deficit target of 4.8% of the GDP in this fiscal, but HSBC said the spending- revenue gap may overshoot to 5.1%. “The Finance Minister has put a
line in the sand when it comes to deficit and he last year delivered on his promises. We, therefore, believe the deficit will end up quite close to the target, but slightly higher at 5.1% of the GDP, it said in a note here. The Minister had set 19.3% revenue growth this fiscal, but it has been only a little over 14% as of November. “Delivering fiscal tightening will be a challenge, it said, adding the Government will have to compress the expenditure harder to meet the fiscal deficit target. Last fiscal, Chidambaram was
able to better the fiscal gap target on the back of massive expenditure cuts. He has repeatedly stressed that he will not breach the red line of 4.8% target for this fiscal and said his Ministry has front-loaded expenditure in the initial part of FY14. The Government was forced to act on the fiscal deficit target because of the pressure from the rating agencies who had threatened to downgrade India’s sovereign rating to junk status because of the fiscal slippage and other reasons.

S
aints and holy men have always looked upon music as the right medium for spreading their message of universal love and brotherhood. Saints like Mirabai, Soordas,Thyagraja and Ramdas used music as their medium of communication, as did Sufi saints like Nizamuddin Auliya and Baba Farid. Kabir, Nanak and saints from the19th century like Ramakrishna Paramhans and his disciple Swami Vivevekanand were also deep into music. In factVivekanand, as musicologist Dr. Ashok Ranade described him, was a product of the ‘Indo Persian Culture’ and was a well trained dhrupad singer. His 150th birth anniversary was observed last year. Fittingly enough, an interfaith dialogue was organised recently at the Bhaidas Hall in Vile Parle (West) which was attended by scholars of
all faiths and included a productive interaction. As a part of this conference, a series of musical performances was organised. Famous singer Padma Talwalkar who skilfully blends Jaipur, Kirana and strands of Gwalior gharana in her music performed at the event. Talwalkar has trained under famous musicians like Moghubai Kurdikar, Nivruttibuwa Sarnaik and Gajananrao Joshi. Nityanand Haldipur, who plays the bansuri in the authentic Pannalal
Ghosh style, also performed with quiet dignity. It was Pannalal Ghosh who brought the bansuri – which was essentially a pastoral instrument – into the arena of classical concert music. Jayteerth Mevundi, the popular Kirana vocalist who reflects the style of the great Bhimsen Joshi, sang the raga ‘Shudhkalyan’ with artistry. Brijnarayan, one of our finest sarod players also played at this festival, accompanied on the tabla by Nayan Ghosh – one of the most accomplished musicians of the country. The festival ended with a tabla jugalbandi by father-son duo Nayan and Ishan Ghosh. Ishan is barely 13 years old and plays with rare maturity and virtuosity and both engaged in a display of percussion fireworks. The Sangeet Natak Academy awards were recently announced. Among the recipients areVeena Sahasrbuddhe, Aruna Sairam and Dhruba Ghosh. Sahasrabuddhe dominated the concert scene in the 90s while Sairam has emerged as one of the most popular voices of Carnatic music. Her jugalbandi with Gwalior gharana singer Neela Bhagwat have left a lasting impression. Dhruba Ghosh, the sarangi maestro, has done the country proud by winning a Grammy Award last year.

Generation Gap T
By Sandeep Hattangadi
oday’s generation has become so addicted to mobile phones, the Internet and social media like Facebook and Twitter that they don’t seem to have time to interact with their own family. While technology has been useful in enabling people to communicate across borders and to interact with people all over the world, there is a lack of warmth in these interactions as compared to personal ones. The older generation that cannot adjust to this change keeps cribbing about it. The film ‘Thoda Tuza Thoda Maza’, made by producer director Anil Kakade, has tried to lessen the distance between the two generations and has portrayed the changing culture of the youth. While interacting with the young generation, parents experience a generation gap so often, but instead of being stubborn about one’s own views, if both can understand each others’ viewpoints, it will certainly help to decrease the distance. There are three generations in the film with noted actor Vikram Gokhale playing the role of the grandfather, Ajinkya Deo playing the father and Nikhil Kakade playing the son. Every father tends to forget how he and his own father could not get along when he was young, and expects his son to follow the values and guidelines set by him. The patriarch Vikram Gokhale in the film has a very close bond with his town, culture and tradition. His son Ramesh, who has been bought up with the same values, has similar expectations from his son Sameer.
t was amazing to watch teenaged dancers performing varied classical dances with a lot of devotion, involvement and enthusiasm at the first Brahma Naad Dance Competition, organised by the Brahma Naad Arts Academy, in collaboration with Rachana Sansad at their auditorium in Prabhadevi, last Sunday. This programme is the first of its kind and has been organised by renowned Bharata Natyam exponent Guru Deepak Mazumdar and his talented disciple Rupak Mehta. The judges were Kathak exponent Padma Sharma, Bharata Natyam exponent Nalini Raghu, and Guru Deepak Mazumdar. Incidentally, both prize winners in the junior and the senior category were Kuchipudi dancers. The judgement was purely on the quality of performance with no discrimination against any particular style. Both the Kuchipudi dancers Shweta Nayak – in the senior category – and Rakshita Thavri performed Balagopala Tarangam, an extract from Narayana Tirtha’s Krishna Leela Tarangam, vividly describing the ‘Charitram’ and the pranks of little Lord Krishna. The dancers performed with precision while maintaining the elegance and the technical quality of the Kuchipudi style. Shweta revealed better command over rhythmic patterns while dancing on the rim of the brass plate as compared to Rakshita. While most of the dancers performed well, it was not easy for the judges to pick up the best winners. Bharata Natyam and Kathak dancers bagged some
prizes too. Both Mohiniattam and Odissi had only single entries, but their performances were also pleasing Teenaged Kuchipudi dancer Rakshita Thavri bagged the first prize in the junior category of the classical dance competition which included different styles like Bharata Natyam, Kuchipudi, Kathak and Mohiniattam. The other prize winners in the juniors include Savani Mohite, Esha and Priyanjali Rao. The first prize in the senior category went to Sweta Nayak while other prize winners included Vani Nedungadi, Ragini Nagar, Nayantara from Singapore and the only male dancer Kadam Parikh. Anand Satchinandan, another male dancer who participated in the festival, is a disciple of renowned Bharata Natyam exponent Guru V,P,Dhananyan. Although he was technically perfect, he exceeded the time limit and the erratic stopping of the music was distracting. This programme is the first in the series to promote classical arts and to encourage young talent.

Ronak sets the pool alight
MUMBAI: Six-year-old Ronak Sawant of Our Lady of Salvation School, Dadar set the only meet record of the opening day while bagging three gold, a silver and the individual championship in a spectacular effort, in the 36th Bombay YMCA Inter School & Junior College Aquatic Championship at the YMCA Swimming Pool, Mumbai Central. True to his name, Ronak, the son of a traffic policeman, set the pool alight as he set a new meet record in the boys under-7 25 freestyle with a stunning 16.65 seconds that shattered the 2003 mark of 17.32 set by Karan Jaising of Bombay Scottish, Mahim. Worli lad Ronak was in devastating form and added the 25m backstroke and breaststroke gold while leaving formidable Vibgyor High duo and arch-rivals Spandan Yeole and Ethan Sequeira trailing by a long way in a riveting battle for supremacy amongst the trio. Ronak, who emulated his effort of last year when as a five-year-old he burst into the limelight with the individual championship in the YMCA Inter Club, was the toast of the day but tears rolled down when he missed the fourth gold after finishing second in the 25m butterfly.

MUMBAI: Swapnil Akut and Abhishek Dethan won the men’s doubles title in the inaugural Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana Open Tennis tournament organized at the WCG hard courts crushing veterans Bhushan Akut and Ajay Lakhotia 6-2 6-2. Youngsters Swapnil and Abhishek dominated right from the start of the match with their attacking tennis. The duo displayed exceptional agility and fitness enthralling the audience. Bhushan and Ajay after winning the championship in another category, had to play back to back matches and that took a toll on their play as they were simply outplayed by their opponents in straight sets.
again, Somdev said, “Hopefully, this year (this season). You never know. All I can do, or for that matter any player can, is really work hard, try his best. Sometimes results come and sometimes they don’t come. So, I think all you have to do is work hard and try to improve, put in a good effort and then let whatever happens, happen.”

Tuffey promises to cooperate with ICC in fixing probe
WELLINGTON: After expressing shock at his name cropping up in a match-fixing inquiry, former New Zealand cricketer Daryl Tuffey has now promised to “cooperate” in the ICC investigations but insisted that he was not the probe’s focus. Malaysia finish on top of Pool D, New Zealand finish 2nd

EW DELHI: With their backs to the wall, hosts India have no other option but to win in a tricky encounter against Korea in their do-or-die final Pool C match to progress to the quarterfinals of the Hero Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup here tomorrow. After a 2-3 defeat against formidable Netherlands in their tournament opener, India kept themselves in the hunt for the knock-out stage by eking out a hard-fought 32 win over Canada in their next match at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium. But India cannot afford either a loss or a draw against Korea in their final pool match to secure their quarterfinal berth. Both India and Korea are on three points each from two outings but Korea have a better goal difference and a draw would be enough for them to pip the home team and go forward. With two wins out of as many games, Netherlands have already qualified for the quarterfinals from Pool C. The Manpreet Singh-led Indian outfit has some thinking to do ahead of the crucial match as less formidable Canada made it toil hard for the 3-2 win which came in the dying stages of the match, courtesy a penalty corner conversion by Gurjinder Singh. Against Canada, India were by far the better side on display but missed chances were the order of the day for the hosts as they ended up making life difficult for themselves. India’s chief coach Greg Clark too admitted that his wards need to be more accurate against a dangerous opponent like Korea. “We really got good chances in the last matches. We created fairly good chances and would like to stick with the same in future matches,” he said. “I have full confidence that the boys will do well in the next match against Korea like they

EW DELHI: An impressive Malaysia scored two goals on either side of the break to shut the door on England with a 4-2 win in their last league encounter at the Hero Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium, here today. The win also enabled Malaysians to finish on top of Group D followed by New Zealand who beat South Africa by a solitary goal. In the Malaysia versus England encounter, Mohd Bin Hashim (15th minute) converted a penalty corner to put Malaysia ahead before Firhan Ashari scored a field goal. Luke Taylor then converted a set piece in the 31st minute to pull one back for England as Malaysia went into the breather with a 2-1 lead. After the cross over, Malaysia scored two field goals through Muhammad Bin Baharom (44th) and skipper Fitri Saari (57th) to extend their lead to 4-1. Meanwhile in the second match of Pool D today, New Zealand rode on a penalty corner conversion in the 44th minute from Kane Russell to beat South Africa by a 1-0 margin in the must-win match and progress to the quarterfinals of the mega-event. The Black Sticks in all likelihood will play Netherlands in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
did in the last match against Canada. Statistically we did lot of right movements like circle entry and created a lot of chances in the opposite end of the field,” Clark said. “The Koreans are a good side; they have consistently performed well in the tournament. The match will be difficult but we have confidence in ourselves. Our performance has constantly improved. But we got to be more accurate in our next encounters.” Fully aware of the task at hand, Clark said that his wards will give their best in the must-
win match tomorrow. Eve though India boast of a strong forwardline in Mandeep Singh, Akashdeep Singh, Ramandeep Singh, Malak Singh and Talwinder Singh, they are yet to fire in the tournament. The mid-field, however, is in the safe hands of skipper Manpreet Singh. But it is the backline which would be a cause of concern for the hosts as they conceded soft goals in their first two matches against Netherlands and Canada.
Owens’ 1936 Olympic gold fetches USD 1.4 million L
OS ANGELES: An Olympic gold medal won by Jesse Owens at the 1936 Berlin Games has sold at auction for USD 1,466,574, the highest price ever paid for a piece of Olympic memorabilia. SCP Auctions based in Laguna Niguel, California, said the price for the medal in the auction that concluded on Sunday surpassed that of a silver cup won by the winner of the first modern-day Olympic marathon in 1896 that sold for USD 865,000 in April 2012 and the highest price paid for a US Olympic item — the “Miracle on Ice” hockey jersey worn by team captain Mike Eruzione - that sold for USD 657,250 in February of 2013. The auction, including more than 1,000 sports memorabilia items, brought in a total of nearly USD 4.5 million. With Germany’s Adolph Hitler using the Olympics as a backdrop for notions of an Aryan master race, US legend Owens famously showed the power of a black athlete by capturing gold in the 100 and 200 meters, the long jump and the 4x100m relay. The medal sold in the auction was not identifiable to a specific event but was given to famed dance and movie star Bill “Bojangles” Robinson by Owens after Robinson helped Owens find work in the years after his epic Olympic victories.

The estate of Robinson’s late widow, Elaine Plaines-Robinson, put the medal up for auction. The auction house said the buyer of the medal wished to remain anonymous at this time. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the medal will be donated to the Jesse Owens Foundation.
Other top lots included Jackie Robinson’s game-used bats from his historic 1949 National League Most Valuable Player season and the 1955 World Series that sold for $183,500 and USD 128,617, respectively; and a Jackie Robinson single-signed baseball attracted a record sum of $104,765. A Muhammad Ali v Jimmy Young fight-worn robe fetched $60,667 in the auction and a 1960s Wilt Chamberlain Los Angeles Lakers game-worn road jersey went for the same price. Ali wore the robe before defending his world title in the fight. “We are honored to have handled what we consider to be among the most inspiring sports artifacts ever offered at auction,” said SCP Auction Vice President Dan Imler. “The worldwide attention garnered by the auction of Jesse Owens 1936 Gold Medal and the extraordinary auction result proves that Owens’ triumphant legacy continues to endure.” Other lots included Major League Baseball great Goose Gossage’s collection of personal memorabilia, which garnered more than $365,000 including $66,734 for his 1978 New York Yankees World Series Champions Ring and $41,372 for his 2008 National Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ring.

HENNAI: Star India Pvt. Ltd. Was today awarded the team sponsorship rights of the Indian team for a period of three years after Sahara’s bid was declared ineligible by the BCCI here. “Star India Pvt Ltd have been awarded the Team Sponsorship Rights covering BCCI Events, ICC Events and ACC Events, for the period 1st January 2014 to 31st March 2017,” BCCI Secretary Sanjay Patel said in a statement after a meeting of Board’s Marketing Committee here. “Rights include the right to be
called the ‘Official Team Sponsor’ and to display a commercial logo on the team clothing of the Sr. Men’s Cricket Team, the U-19 Men’s Cricket Team, the Men’s A-Team and the Women’s Team.” The Indian team would have been without a sponsor after this month as Sahara had pulled the plug on its deal a few months ago owing to a financial dispute with the BCCI. Although the BCCI release did not specify the amount, it is learnt that Star will shell out Rs 1.92 crore per match organised by the Board.
Middle-order not performing to potential: Mahendra Singh Dhoni Dhoni said he was surprised that Indian batsmen could take advantage of a flat track. “The wicket was on the flatter side and there wasn’t much for the fast bowlers in it, so I am disappointed with the batting. The kind of shots we played, well, few of them were on. But the shot execution was not great to some extent, as they went to the fielders,” he said. Dhoni though expressed his pleasure about the bowlers’ performance. “Compared to the last game, our bowling did a fantastic job especially in the middle orders. “The tender document, which was available from 11th November 2013, was picked up by 7 prospective bidders. Bids were accepted until 3:00 pm on 9th December 2013, at which time the bids were opened and evaluated. Two bidders – Star India Pvt Ltd and Sahara India Financial Corporation – were in the fray. Sahara’s bid was found to be ineligible,” Patel said. Sahara, however, claimed that they were disqualified because of the dispute with the Board regarding the IPL franchise and the entire bidding process was “stage-managed”.
“If there is a dispute why did they not disqualify us from the very beginning. It’s very clear that the entire thing was a stage-managed show,” Sahara’s Corporate Communications Head Abhijit Sarkar alleged. He said that Sahara was the biggest bidder but the Board did not give them the rights out of vengeance. It is learnt that Sahara had bid Rs 2.35 crore per BCCI match and Rs 91 lakh for ICC games. The total amount bid by them stood at Rs 252 crore in contrast to Rs 203 crore bid by Star.
Thumping victory leaves Aussies on brink of Ashes

DELAIDE: Australia wrapped up a comprehensive 218-run victory over England on Monday to take a 2-0 series lead, leaving them on the brink of reclaiming the Ashes from their fierce rivals. The home team claimed the four remaining wickets in just under an hour on the final morning in Adelaide and are now just one victory away from winning back the famous urn after three consecutive series defeats. It was a second emphatic defeat for England after they lost the first
Test in Brisbane by 381 runs and the tourists must regroup before the third match of the series, which starts in Perth on Friday. England have only won once in 12 Tests on the traditionally pacy WACA pitch. “I think that something that is most pleasing is we are finally getting some results,” said Australian skipper Michael Clarke. But he added: “I think we have to be realistic. That’s our second Test win in the past 12 months — certainly not a record we’re proud of. “There’s a lot of work for us to do to get back to being the number one team in the world and that’s our goal.” England captain Alastair Cook admitted his side lost the game on the first day when they were guilty of several dropped catches, allowing Australia to pile up an imposing 570 for nine declared. “On that first day we had an opportunity to a put a bit of pressure on Australia. We let a few chances go, and they really made us pay for that,” he said. Cook said England’s first innings total of 172 was not good enough. “You don’t get too many chances on good wickets and we had the opportunity then and we didn’t take it. I thought that was the main difference. Australia took their chances very well,” he said.

Mumbai eke out a draw against Jharkhand
M
UMBAI: Having conceded the vital first innings lead to minnows Jharkhand, champions Mumbai had no other option but to fight for a draw which they did successfully after surviving anxious moments in their Ranji Trophy Group A game here today. Placed at the bottom of table Jharkhand, overnight 176 for five in the second innings after taking a first innings lead of 86, delayed the declaration as they wanted Ishant Jaggi to complete his century after he was unbeaten on 51 on the third evening yesterday. The visitors finally declared at 278 for seven, Jaggi’s contribution being 103 not out in 217 minutes, 41 minutes to lunch, but this delay calling off their their innings robbed Jharkhand bowlers of some valuable time with Mumbai needing a stiff target of 365 in 64 overs for a win. When stumps were drawn finally, Mumbai had lost five of their top-order batsmen with 115 runs on board. At a point in time the hosts were in deep trouble at 78 for five in the 44th over. The extra pace of Varun Aaron, who grabbed four wickets in Mumbai’s first innings, once again did the early damage. The pacer sent back seasoned Wasim Jaffer (10) cheaply for the second time in the match and Sidesh Lad (4) to reduce the hosts to 28 for three after Shiv Shankar Rao trapped Sushant Marathe leg before as the opener made a pair of ducks. Mumbai batsmen then fought with their backs to the wall with Aditya Tare (36) once again showing good application. Tare added 39 runs with Hiken Shah (21 not out in 166 minutes) and denied Jharkhand a wicket for 18 overs as left-arm spinner Shah and Suryakumar Yadav (31 not out) kept the rival bowlers at bay till play was called off after the eighth mandatory over. Brief scores: Jharkhand: 351 and 278 for 7 (Bhavik Thakker 39, R Nemat 32, S Tiwary 38, I Jaggi not out 103; Javed Khan 2 for 48, V Dabholkar 2 for 113, A Nayar 2 for 39) drew with Mumbai 265 and 115 for 5 (A Tare 36, H Shah 21 not out, S Yadav 31 not out; V Aaron 2 for 29, S Nadeem 2 for 23 ).
India to bid for 2015 and 2016 Club World Cup football: AIFF N
EW DELHI: Buoyed after the country was awarded the 2017 Under-17 FIFA World Cup’S hosting rights, the All India Football Federation is set to bid for the 2015 and 2016 editions of the Club World Championships. AIFF President Praful Patel told a press conference here today that India has already communicated to the world football governing body FIFA its expression of interest to host the Club World Championships in 2015 and 2016. FIFA awards Club World Championships to a host country for two
consecutive years and Morocco will host the event this and next year. “We have officially put our request for 2015 and 2016 Club World Cup. We have made official communication to FIFA. I am going to meet FIFA officials in Switzerland next month to pursue India’s case to host the prestigious tournament,” Patel said at a press conference called to officially announce India’s successful bid to host the Under-17 World Cup in 2017. India was on Thursday awarded the right to host the Under-17 World Cup in 2017.
“We have been awarded the 2017 Under-17 World Cup and if we get to host the Club World Championships in 2015 and 2016, then I feel it will be a completely paradigm shift in Indian football,” he said. “Moreover, it will be good to hold a FIFA tournament of the scale of a Club World Championship before the Under-17 World Cup in 2017,” he added. If India gets the hosting rights of the Club World Championships, ILeague champion team will also take part in the tournament. “FIFA Executive Board will decide
on the host country for the 2015 and 2016 Club World Championships in the middle of next year. We have to ensure that we have a good bid. I feel we have a good case.” Unlike the 24-nation Under-17 FIFA World Cup which will need at least six stadiums, the Club World Championships will require only a couple of venues as only eight matches will be played on knockout basis among seven teams. Since its inception in 2000, Japan has hosted the Club World Championship six times including the last edition.
