hile the printing of school text-books has already been messed up, the teachers training program organised by the State Board seems to be running into the same problem. Last week, the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) had organized a teachers training program at Parle Tilak Vidyalaya, Vile Parle, on the newly changed Hindi syllabus. Though the program was organized to acquaint teachers with the new syllabus, the teachers claim that
the trainers themselves were confused. If that wasn’t enough, the trainers were also unable to pronounce several Hindi words correctly, and the session ended with just a discussion of the paper pattern, rather than an actual training. A teacher who attended the training program and did not wished to be named, said “The trainers who had been sent by the State Board to train us, were unable to communicate in correct Hindi and pronounce the words appropriately. Sujata Patil, whose controversial poem severely chastised the Azad Maidan rioters, penalised over 100 motorists for violation of traffic rules in a special drive

T Not to worry! The railway minister will be kind enough. He won’t sanction a single farthing in the railway budget to extend this project
OPINIONS
Will the state government’s affordable veggie scheme bring down vegetable prices?
Farheen Siddiqui News Producer Yes. I think it will make a difference because even some discount on the prices of vegetables can help people a lot in saving money. Priya Mayekar Lawyer No. It’s another political gimmick. Even if the govt provides cheap vegetables, consumers look for quality goods, that too on time. Zahabiya Takulla Service Yes. The scheme should bring down prices as there is a huge difference between the wholesale and retail prices. Manek Kalyaniwala Lawyer Yes. The concept of farm to family table should work in favour of the hardhit consumers. It’s altogether a good idea. Neha Jayakar Banker Yes. Consumers will benefit from the scheme since vegetables will be sold at an affordable price, as there will be no involvement of middlemen.

he controversial Sujata Patil, the fiery cop who wrote a polemical poem about the Azad Maidan riots last year, is back in action as Senior Police Inspector (Traffic – Matunga). Recently, Patil, in her special drive against motorist, caught hundreds of offenders who were found violating the traffic rules in her jurisdiction. “I, along with four other constables, started our special drive at around 5.00 p.m. in evening. The drive lasted till about 8.00 p.m. We caught over 105 offenders who were not wearing a helmet, driving their cars with tinted glasses and parking their cars on the wrong side of the road,” Sujata Patil told the ADC. “We are concentrating on twowheeler drivers who simply ignore the traffic rules. These drivers not only endanger the lives of their fel- Senior Police Inspector (Traffic) Sujata Patil during a special drive against traffic offenders. low travellers, but also their own lives often by ignoring simple rules such as wearing helmets,” Patil added. “I don’t have a personal issue with anyone, but I do want people, especially those who fall under my jurisdiction, to follow the rules and regulations necessary for them. This drive will continue till people do not understand traffic rules,” said Patil, who had come into the limelight after her poem, published last November in Samwad, the inhouse magazine of the Mumbai Police, claimed that the hands of the rioters who desecrated the Amar Jawan Jyoti memorial should have LIJJA AT AD. on about how the police should have opened fire at the rampaging mob. However, in light of the ensuing controversy, Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh said he would probe into how the poem was published in the first place. When ADC asked her about the controversial poem, Patil responded, “I have not commented anything about the whole community but only wrote about the rioters who took part in the riots. But I don’t want to say anymore about that issue. I am doing my duty in the traffic department and am happy.”

he Samata Nagar police busted a milk adulteration racket early on Tuesday morning and have arrested four persons from the Kajupada locality in Malad (East). The police recovered around 456 litres of adulterated milk worth around Rs.20,000 from the shanties where the accused were conducting their business. The accused would sell the milk in the plastic packets of various brands, including Amul, Aarey, Mahananda, Gokul, and other brands. According to Assistant Commissioner of Police, Samata Nagar region, Deepak Bhavsar, their modus operandi was to make very tiny holes on the packets of branded milk, from where they would draw out the milk through syringes and inject plain water in thereafter.
VASTU TIP OF THE DAY
The Samata Nagar police team with the confiscated spurious milk packets, yesterday.
They would then seal the hole neatly with a candle flame. The milk they had removed would also be mixed with water and put into plastic packets of various brands for sale. The arrested accused have been identified as Viraya Chirayana (35), Chandraya Gorala (22), Krishnaya Kurakula (33) and Murli Ali (19). “A few residents had complained about the adulterated milk racket in the their locality, on the basis of which we raided the place and seized the milk,” added Bhavsar. “All have been booked under various sections of the IPC including 420, 272, 273 and FDA Act. They will be produced before court where we will seek their remand as it is suspected that more people may be involved in this crime,” an investigation officer revealed.

The defence argued no literature seized was produced in the court, while the panch witnesses had turned hostile. The defence pointed out that there were contradictions in the statements given by the policemen and also argued that if the accused wanted to protest, they had the right to do so under the Constitution. They also brought to the notice of the court that even the DCP, who had sent proposal for sanction for prosecution, was not examined. n evaluation of the data collected from districts of Pune, Amravati and Thane between January and February 2013, was done by external auditors under the guidance of the Advisory Group on Community Action (AGCA) of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and it has been found out that people are now more satisfied with the Primary Health Centre (PHC) than they were when the Community Based Monitoring and Planning (CBMP) was started in 2007. “The CBMP program has seen success. It has managed to get people back to primary health centres and has reinstated their faith in public health system,” said Dr. Abhay Shukla, a member of AGCA. According to statistics from the report, the percentage of people rating PHCs as ‘good’ increased from 44 per cent in 2007-08 to 75 per cent in 2010-11. Also, percentage of people availing free ambulance services has gone from 44 per cent in 2007-08 to 84 per cent in 2010-11. Also, 75 per cent people now feel that the overall situation at the

The model followed for CBMP seems to have caught the fancy of the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) of the state. During June end of this year, not only did it send out a Government Resolution (GR) stating that the ICDS adopt their model of functioning but also has begun its implementation at the block level in July. The ICDS has taken up this model as pilot project in Nandurbar, Gadchiroli, Pune, Amravati, Nagpur and Mankhurd in Mumbai, informed Dr. Shukla.
CBMP had been implemented as a pilot in nine states of India in 2007 and Maharashtra was one of them. Currently, CBMP is being implemented in thirty five blocks and 116 PHCs of the thirteen districts of Amaravati, Nandurbar, Osmanabad, Pune, Thane, Aurangabad, Beed, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Nashik, Kolhapur, Raigad and Solapur. The US taken for a ride E
VEN as the United States was looking for its arch enemy Osama bin Laden all over the world, he was safely in Pakistan – secretly enjoying the protection of the ISI. He had a house of his own and he stayed there for as many as nine years! The establishment which threw all about Osama’s cosy stay in the country, declared it would help the U.S. in its attempt to catch the dreaded Al Qaeda terrorist. Clearly the U.S. was taken for a ride: It trusted Pakistani rulers and kept giving them huge monetary assistance. The U.S. leaders evidently could not see through the duplicity of Pak leaders. It thought Pakistan was on its side and it was helping in the fight against terrorism. The recent exposure about Osama once again provides strong proof that Pakistan is a terror state and the world’s most dangerous terrorists are to be found there. The U.S. was trapped by Pak terrorists even as it went about carrying out its Afghan programme. The pertinent question is how will the U.S. react to the cheating by Pakistan with regard to Osama’s stay for as many as nine years in the terror state. It must be a terribly humiliating experience for the American government. It is to be seen whether the U.S. will change its attitude with regard to its dealing with Pakistan.

ITH RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat determined to ring down the curtain on the Vajpayee-Advani era in the BJP, two stalwarts are likely to be missing in the 16th Lok Sabha which will be constituted after the 2014 polls. One is Advani himself. The other is Murli Manohar Joshi. Bhagwat has told both in no uncertain terms that they will not get tickets to contest the next election. The advice to Advani, conveyed when he met Bhagwat last month at the RSS office in Delhi’s Jhandewalan, was to elevate himself to the role of Bishma Pitamah and help guide the BJP to victory in 2014. He should not fight the election himself. Joshi was given the pink slip when he was summoned to the RSS headquarters in Nagpur early this month. Bhagwat is believed to have sweetened the bitter pill with an assurance that he would be rewarded in a fitting manner when the BJP comes to power with either a governor’s post or the position of vice president of India. It’s always dangerous to count your chickens before they are hatched but the RSS chief seems quite oblivious to the moral of the old fable. He’s blithely promising loaves and fishes even as elections are far away and a BJP victory still a distant dream. Joshi’s possible exit from active politics throws up the interesting possibility of Narendra Modi contesting from the senior leader’s current constituency of Varanasi. Modi has been eyeing three seats in UP for the 2014 polls: Lucknow, Kanpur and Allahabad. The first two are virtually out because internal surveys have been discouraging. Both have large Muslim populations. Allahabad is still on the table as a possibility but BJP workers in Varanasi are keen to bring Modi to the holy city. Their argument is that Varanasi is the most fitting constituency for a Hindutva icon to represent.

the BJP’s warring flock. Check out the new seating arrangement at the last two parliamentary board meetings. Rajnath sat at the head of the table. To his left was L.K. A vision document for Muslims
B
POWER TALK
JP circles are quite surprised by the announcement that the party will soon come out with a vision document for Muslims. Apparently, it was Narendra Modi’s idea. He came out with it at the first meeting of the campaign committee he chaired in Delhi. Every hard-headed BJPwallah knows that it’s a futile exercise for Modi to try and woo the Muslims. And certainly, a vision document can never make up for the sufferings inflicted on the community in the 2002 riots in Gujarat. According to a BJP strategist, Modi is not aiming to win over Muslims with this move. He has his eye on the liberal Hindu who fears a repeat of the communal violence that scarred Gujarat. Now that Modi is on the development track, he is looking beyond the core BJP voter base as the rest of the Hindus. He wants to convince them that he is not anti-Muslims and that they need not worry about escalating communal tensions in a regime headed by him. It remains to be seen whether people buy this.

AJNATH’S seating ploy comes amid reports that the recent so-called peace meeting between Advani and Narendra Modi didn’t go off as well as people thought. Modi was characteristically blunt and forthright and didn’t mince words to counter all the arguments Advani trotted out to justify his concerns about the Gujarat chief minister’s appointment as campaign committee chief. The last straw apparently was Advani’s barb JP president Rajnath Singh is quite the old that the NDA would break up because allies fashioned school marm. Remember that would never accept him. EST BENGAL chief minister Mamata Banerjee seems determined to take her battle with the media to new heights. She has got an arrest warrant issued against a top media baron in the state. The charge: spreading communal hatred by reproducing in his childrens’ publication a tweet that mocked the Pakistani cricket team. The item appeared nearly a year ago and was not even about Indian Muslims but about Pakistani cricket players. But Mamata’s pro-Muslim politics is so skewed that she saw red. And her government has neither forgotten, nor forgiven the media house. It got FIRs registered in seven different police stations and now comes an arrest warrant against the owner. The media baron seems equally determined to escalate the battle. He is believed to have sent a message to Mamata daring her to have him arrested. The falling out is quite ironic because the same media house was one of Mamata’s most vociferous supporters against the Left Front.

With degree colleges re-opening and first year students (freshers) looking forward to college, seniors are all set to make the juniors feel right at home by throwing them a freshers bash. Yatin Ingle presents a gist of the freshers party culture that is followed by colleges all over the city.

egree colleges have already begun and the senior students are eager to get to know their freshers. Though the orientations for the first year students, give them a brief idea about the courses they have been pursuing; the self-financed and managed ‘Fresher’s Parties’ make the new comers get into the groove of degree college. City colleges and its seniors step ahead and are set on throwing a bangin’ ‘Fresher’s Party’ for the newbies. What is a fresher’s party, you ask? Here’s the answer, this party is to welcome the new students right from junior college to degree courses to provide them a feel
about the environment and culture of the degree college. The fresher’s party is wholly managed and financed by the students themselves. Though it is not a must or included in the curriculum of the college courses, it is more of an event to make the first, second and third year students get along. Students shell out from their own pockets to make this event a big hit for the new entrants. As the plan for the freshers party begins, the first thought which strikes seniors, is the ‘theme’ for the event. Thinking about a comfortable and affordable theme is always the most difficult task for
the students. Next up, is the music genre. Dancing to the selective beats and music most of the time makes a few students uncomfortable, so freestyle or multi-genre music makes it all ‘happening’. Then comes, catering management. As the college extend the fresher’s parties from mid-afternoon to around 8pm in the evening, students usually skip main course meals and hog on starters and snacks. So seniors arrange for more starters than main course dishes to balance the budget. Lastly, comes the legal part of the party – getting permisContinued on pg 14 «

Completing a Bachelor’s degree would be a base for further studies in the field of Finance. Without completing your Bachelor’s degree you are not eligible for any Masters course including MBA. Completing your studies from a recognized University is more important than the geographical location. Your thoughts cannot be the parameter for considering any University superior or inferior especially at the student level having so little information about the education system in India. For getting selected for a job what matters is the requisite educational qualification as well as the soft skills. And also remember that a number of people in Hyderabad are employed and continue to get job offers.

sions not only from the college authorities but also from the police department. Once the students get hold of the permissions the set up for the fresher’s party begins. As the freshers party is organized with an aim of getting the first years introduced to the second and third year students, unique introduction styles are initiated by the seniors for the freshers. Some make it a fashion show style introduction, whereas some plan out introductions pairing up the freshers and seniors in the events or games performed. Most of the students carry out their fresher’s parties in the college campus and auditoriums to avoid the extra expenses of renting places outside the college premises. The ADC, spoke to a few college students who have been giving their best for the freshers party. Jai Kapoor, a student from Thakur College, says, “We second and third year students have been giving our best for managing the freshers party for the first year students. It’s just like giving them a feeling of the degree college and creating a bonds with them.” Shweta Singh, a first year degree college student says, “I am so excited for the freshers party and to meet the seniors. “Most of the colleges have been following the trend of the fresher’s party. It it an easy way to make the students come together and be a helping hand to support and encourage them for all the three years they will be studying together. Though the party follows the aim of fun and entertainment we professors and teachers see to it that students follow discipline and rules.”

While Samsung unveiled their Curved OLED TV, LG announced their first curved OLED TV, the LG EA9800. LG had unveiled their first 55Inch OLED TV at CES 2012 and while many were expecting more developments on the OLED front, LG surprised us wit a curved OLED TV. The gentle curve inwards means the entire screen surface is equidistant from the viewer’s eyes. This removes screen edge visual distortion and detail loss seen on standard flat TVs. Built with proprietary four-colour WRGB technology (white, red, green, and blue), the super-thin display offers a vivid picture quality that is claimed to be practically indiscernible from colours found in nature. The EA9800 model features the industry's first curved screen ergonomic design with full Cinema 3D support. Featuring a ‘gentle inward flex’, the entire screen surface is equidistant from the viewer's eyes and the set has a minimal bezel to create a more impressive viewing experience. Is this the end of flat screen TV? Only time will tell.
There were over 160 kids in the country who qualified from across the top schools for the finals; the competition consisted of rigorous rounds in the finals consisting of Spell It, Word Origin, Pronunciation, Synonyms and Antonyms. More than 1000 children, studying in class 1-12 participated in the competition conducted on 29th and 30th June. (Song of the week) Artist: MS MR
“Maybe I’ll find something real, not a fantasy so divine.” – Intelligent and witty lyrics aren’t all that comes with MS MR’s hit single ‘Fantasy’. Along with that you get a spiffy tune and the vocalist’s voice (which is by far one of the best in the Indie circuit and quite alike to Florence Welch’s). Accompanied by hand clap beats, the song has an overall pop song feel that starts out a bit dark and soulful but launches into some energy towards the middle. Fantasy is the first single cut from MS MR, (a fresh art rock/dream pop New York based duo) and is pretty much that song that EVERYONE has added to their Ipod playlists.

“The need of the hour is to develop a strong, workable and viable regulatory mechanism to grant consent to private or cross-border institutions to function by ensuring and escalating qualitative higher education,” writes Dr. Sheela Nabar, Principal, Russell Square International College.
H
igher education in India is probably one of the largest uphill struggles today. During the last two or three decades, an unparalleled explosion in most important areas of knowledge and technology, science and aspirations have been witnessed. Knowledge and technology are rising at a much more rapid speed now than even dreamed of. Planning for a better global economic and social order to overcome several hardcore problems with the help of information knowledge and wisdom has become vital for one’s own existence. Education should serve three important purposes. The main objectives of education are education for values, education for resources and education for knowledge. Evidently all the three objectives of education namely enhancing human values, building up human resources, deepening of knowledge – all are inter-linked and one cannot realize the first and last objectives unless and until one develops human resources for better-quality life of individuals and better economic conditions of country. A look at the present scenario shows that a huge transformation in academics has taken
place in higher education in the past few decades. Across the world, the outline of higher education is changing. It is an undisputed fact that the world is going to be more global than what it is today. Already there is transformation seen in the way we live, study and work. The speed of development of technology, the pace of communication is going faster. Global markets are opened for students who are eager to seize them. This need of the students to turn out to be ‘global citizens’ is accepted by all education providers all over the world. It is also an accepted fact that India lives in villages and majority of the population is in need of basic education. Higher education seems a distant dream in remote areas of India even today. The government concentrates on primary education centers in the villages. Hence, the student goes to nearby cities for higher education or discontinues his studies. But it is found that even in smaller towns and cities, Indians have embraced this paradigm shift and are prepared for a world that is global. And it must be remembered that International Education is preparing the students for a world ten years from now, helping

Academic authority depends on special attributes like initiatives, plans, originalities and creativity with extensive academic autonomy. The academic autonomy when referred to institutions stand for freedom from active government control extravagant spending, teaching, and core curriculum decisions giving power to institutions to take decisions for imparting skills keeping pace with market needs. Academic freedom must be accompanied with accountability for better educational outcome. Besides academic independence and accountability, timely decision should be taken for effective governance. If India has to emerge as the chosen place for higher education in the fast moving world, it will have to soon build a national policy to deal with the challenges of sub-standard class, useless systems of monitoring and control, red-tapism and unnecessary political intervention. Finally, higher education is not a new concept to India. India has a record of the curiosity shown from time to time to learn about the of concepts of universe, self, role of state, economy, social order and other related matters since ancient times. While we are proud of our past, we cannot forget that we are entering the age of globalization and competition and what would ultimately be important is the national survival and formation of infrastructure for knowledge industry. We do not have too many options. We either choose to have a globally competitive plan within which all mechanisms are well oiled and functionally and attentively controlled or stop to consider ourselves in the competitive world of tomorrow.
them to face global challenges and opportunities. More and more Indians are looking for international exposure as early as their high school education. But internationalization of education is perceived in a very different way in India. The Government is debating how to respond to the process of internationalization. On the one hand, the top management at government level is showing interest in encouraging Indian institutions to enter into partnerships with << Dr. Sheela foreign universities and offer Nabar joint degrees to Indian students by helping them to seek a foreign degree at a reduced cost. On the other hand, it is befuddled with various stake holders and caught in the bureaucratic maze. The need of the hour is to develop a strong, workable and viable regulatory mechanism to grant consent to private or cross-border institutions to function by ensuring and escalating qualitative higher education. Achieving the goal of excellence in various fields has become vital with globalization round the corner.
‘What I like most about fashion designing is the power to create something unique’, says Aniket Sunil Satam, Creative Director and Proprietor of label Aniket.
I
did my BMM with Advertising and PR as a major subject from Wilson College and followed it up with an Advance Diploma in fashion Designing and Business management from B.D.Somani Institute of Fashion technology. I chose fashion designing as it challenges me to create something new and it is convenient to have a smart business module over working in a traditional format of a 9 to 5 job corporate race. What I like most about it is the power to create something unique and the flexibility to adjust and adapt your working styles and to see people appreciate your hard-work by sporting your designs in their wardrobe. My education has definitely helped me a great deal. The background in Media studies has helped me in brand building and understanding how the buyer perceives a trend and the purchase cycle along with my design education helped in understanding the core of the fashion business. I preferred a shorter course than the hyped up design schools with their extensive modules. Like any other professional course, it is equally challenging and hard work helps at every step. The understanding of style, textile, pattern, trends, color, etc takes most of the time to actually start and experiment with collection designing. Being tutored by the best in the field makes you a bit systematic and the atmosphere helps you focus, adapt and innovate with new experimentation in design.
A plethora of submissions, re-submissions, field trips, educational visits to dye houses, traditional handicraft centers, textile committees, trade fairs, trend forecasting seminars along with first hand experiences with renowned designers has helped me in shaping my on-field perspectives and fine tune the book knowledge with street smartness. Designing is not only about glamour and runway success; it is about 10 seconds of the 100 hard hours one spends in a workshop to ideaate, experiment and innovate a design. Being a micro managing individual, I love to be involved in every step of the design and production process. So my day starts with research and documentation, following up on orders with clients, answering media requests, workshop management, sourcing for styling projects, customize designing and meeting new clients takes most of the day. I would advise young entrepreneurs to initially work under a brand, company, designer in the department of your interest. Learn, adapt and see how and where you stand in the industry. You should also switch jobs to see new challenges and new design zones to have the experiences of different styles of designs and formats of working; and then venture into solo projects. Take up freelancing jobs to have a cash cow of funds, operate from home or a

smaller workshop; understanding the market, buyers’ needs would take some time. Returns are to be expected after a couple of years. Anything between Rs. one lakh to Rs.10 lakhs is minimum required to kick-start a full-fledged design house. Depending on your design caliber and position acquired, a fresher can easily start earning from Rs 15,000 to 40,000 depending on how strong he or she has a portfolio and a clear concept. I think a couple of years are a good enough exposure to get acquainted with the norms of the industry and it takes years to understand and adapt to the new changes facing the modern challenges. Technology is growing and one has to continuously learn new things. The amount you can earn as an established professional depends on the number of projects, production capacity, experience and exposure. One can have a turnover in crores; in a niche market or one can earn in lakhs per month on personal orders. The biggest advantage of this field is that it is creative; so it keeps one experimenting with new ideas and innovative new designs, which is very satisfying. It is your own child, so one can easily adapt and be flexible with his or her working hours and there is no corporate hierarchy to please. Returns are more once you have a hold and a firm stand in the market. Difficulties are at every level of production.
The biggest is the gamble of production. You never know what works well in the market and what just stays with you as dead stock. Also, managing different set of people with various ideologies and diverse temperaments is a tough job. Managing staff is a major concern with the influx of labor staff from one design house to another. There is also the issue of people stealing your original styles and marketing the fakes. It is disturbing but intellectual property rights are not very strong in our country. However I will still say - stay original, dare to explore and experiment but the main bread and butter is the common silhouettes and staple designs. Treat designing as commercial art. Have a fine balance of commercial design value in your product. Understand Indian people, Indian body types and adapt your signature style. There is tremendous future in the fashion industry. Fashion is changing and India is growing, attracting everyone across the globe. We are competing with local darzis who have mastered the art of customized services to global retail giants and high end couture retailers. I prefer to move away from the usual design rat race. I focus more on slow yet substantial growth of my brand delivering in creation which celebrates my true aesthetic sense, instead of manufacturing, critic pleasing collections or mass commercial production. I prefer to invest my energy in fine tuning my labels DNA rather than running behind mainstream glossiness. It is time to preserve and nurture the original soul in the war of the brutal runway race. As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

South African Business School Regenesys recently launched its Freemium model MBA education in India. Dr. Marko Saravanja – Chairperson of Regenesys Business School, explains the working of this new education format, what it entails and how successful it has been in the past.
Let’s talk free MBA education Can you explain the aim behind Regenesys Free MBA education model, how it works and its benefits? Regenesys is South Africa’s first business school offering free business education from Certificate to MBA level, which works on a Freemium model. This means that anyone, from a Matriculate to entrepreneur to business manager, can register and gain free access to all learning material, business tools and knowledge at no cost. Should you then want to take this knowledge and work towards obtaining a formal tertiary qualification, you can upgrade to the full eLearning or contact learning mode. atin Ballroom dance styles are no longer an alien concept, what with popular television dance shows like ‘So you think you can dance’ or our very own desi dance series ‘Jhalak Dhikla Jaa’. Distinguished for its hip action, pointed toes and sizzling chemistry, the Latin dance form has taken on a global appeal which means that India too is not far

Dancing the Latin way behind. Explaining the difference between standard Ballroom dancing and Latin Ballroom, Conrad Coelho says “Standard Ballroom Dances are formal and graceful. One would typically see the couple progressing round the dance floor while Latin Dances are all about exaggerated hip movements and funk”. So while Standard Ballroom includes Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Tango and Rhythm Dancing, Latin Ballroom includes Rumba, Cha Cha, Jive, Samba and Paso Doble. Both of these fall under Dancesport, that is a name given to Partner dances as is the nature of the dance form itself. Conrad goes on to speak about the dance scene in India and says “India has witnessed many new dance styles in the last few years but Ballroom Dancing has

stood the test of time. Its grace and elegance is based on solid technique which takes years to master.” While Hip Hop and other free style dances are at the forefront of the dance scene, there are a good number of youngsters drawn to the more western classic dance forms that is slowly gaining character so the need for trained teachers will also grow alongside. “As a career, an aspiring dancer had two options- Performing & competing or Teaching,” advises Conrad who himself began his career performing on stage and then even went on to participate at the Asia Pacific Latin Competition held in Singapore. “I always encourage aspiring dancers to start performing first and then learn the theoretical aspects which will help them be good dance teachers,” says Conrad who considers it hara-kiri or a ritual suicide for one beginner to teach another by just learning off videos and without adequate training. Being India’s only ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, London) certified Latin and Ballroom Dance teacher and Salsa Promoter, Conrad Coelho’s dance school is affiliated with the ISTD and conducts professional courses which are recognized by the World Dance council and other International leading dance bodies. On passing such competitive exams, the student receives a certification and medal from the dance school. From a career perspective Conrad lets us in on a few tips to achieving success as a Latin ballroom dancer. “Training aspirants can assist in classes and earn a stipend. On completion of training, most dance instructors are paid per hour. However, other areas in which one can branch out and earn well include choreographing for events, marriages etc. In fact accomplished dancers also get paid well
to judge competitions and perform at major events.” Recognizing the problem of untrained dance teachers and classes that offer substandard dance training, Conrad provides light on the declining image of the industry. However, he believes that hard work, dedication and passion never go unrewarded and so one can create a niche for themselves in the Latin Dance arena if he truly respects the techniques and dance form. CONRAD COELHO DANCE COMPANY Web site: http://www.conradcoelho.com Locations: Vileparle (E), Powai (Vihar), Worli and Vashi Contact No.: 9833171543 Building your reputation in the field is crucial as it is only through good networking and word of mouth that you can gather students and aspiring dancers. What’s more, the immense competition and talent in the field of dance is something of a perennial nature and thus to survive one must constantly learn and reinvent oneself to stand out amongst the rest. In India, Latin ballroom dancing is still in its nascent stage and so the prospects of this career option are immense. “Well don’t be in a rush to open your dance school,” says Conrad, “Spend a few years training first and then gradually get into teaching. Explore different dance styles and then choose the one that excites you the most.” If listening to Gypsy Kings makes your mind conjure up an entire dance sequence almost instantly, you never know you may just dance your way through this one with those Latin feet.

Recent reports have stated how seats in many MBA colleges are going vacant. Earlier there was a craze for these courses and colleges demanded exorbitant fees for the same. We ask students what they feel could be the probable reason for this lackadaisical response to these courses currently. I basically think that now every college seems to offer MBA courses. Earlier it was a select few premier colleges that offered these courses so the quality of students was great. Also a select few were selected for these courses and had an edge over the rest. Today with everyone offering the course, the quality is no longer that great and nor is the shortage of MBA students. They are no longer a select few. So since everyone is becoming an MBA, the starting salaries are not as great as they used to be. The fees of these colleges remains high though. It is because of this that I feel the popularity of the course has gone down. Also kids are now realizing that it is best to study an MBA from the top colleges. The MBA has lost a bit of its value. —Albana Khatri Training Manager
The downfall of the programs is understandable. People are losing trust in these programs as a lot of young people are moving away from traditional jobs to more unconventional options. With the start up boom, a lot of young people prefer going the entrepreneur route rather than climbing the corporate ladder. Further, MBA has been reduced to ashes by the sheer number of seats available and the lack of quality infrastructure, innovative teaching methods and outdated topics taught to students after charging a whopping fee. —Sanjay Pratyush, Digital Media Marketing
I think the reason behind the diminishing trend to acquire an MBA degree is because students are experiencing wider prospects as graduates than they did before. Today, a person’s dynamism and determination trumps the marks on a marksheet. Of course, education is important but simple graduates these days are ready to push themselves and get gratifying jobs even with a graduate degree or a masters. An MBA is the last leg of education which is now looked at as a post-5-year-work agenda or sometimes not at all. — Ayushi Mukherji, Graduate

ity of Dreams’These were the words I had always heard but never quite understood, until I entered H.R. College, Mumbai. The ambience in the college took my breath away on the very first day and the opportunities given by the college, practically begging to be taken, were awe inspiring. Yes, it certainly was a place where dreams came true, where not only do you learn, but also grow as an individual, where not only do you think of yourself, but others as well. The clubs of H.R. College are brilliantfrom the Rotaract Club of H.R. College, who organises Dreams on Wheels, an open-bus ride for the underprivileged to C.h.o.i.c.e. that never loses an intercollegiate event. The teachers too are friendly and helpful. It has barely been two weeks but I can already feel the change within me - from a lazy, shy girl who lacked ambition and direction, I can now proudly say, “Yes, I want to shine and reach for the stars.” Coming from a conservative Marwari household in Calcutta and being an only child, wanting to study in a completely alien city was a fight, but this fight is proving worthwhile. Studying, participating in various activities, I can now see myself transition into the person I want to be - a confident, independent young woman who believes in herself and can bring about change. Yes, I still have a long way to go, but I am sure it’s going to be one hell of a ride.

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Wednesday (July 10, 2013) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello
REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose moderately on Tuesday (July 09, 2013) a net 47.45 points (0.82%) and closed at the 5859 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 5834 points level and that level itself was the low of the session. It then rose sharply and registered the day’s high at the 5864 points level at 9.32 a.m. The index then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained above its previous close throughout the session and moved in a range of 30 points. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 39 were gainers, while 11 were losers. All the sectoral indices closed in the green. Heavy buying was witnessed in power, realty, capital goods and healthcare stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 0.56%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors.
Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 837 were gainers, 493 were losers and 61 remained unchanged.
Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is above the slow D line (positive if it continues). RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 40 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).
MACD Indicator: The MACD is below zero but is now rising (positive if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).
ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line and both lines are diverging (positive if it continues). The ADX is falling while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is decreasing in strength.
MOVING AVERAGES (TREND INDICATORS) The index: Has crossed above its 5-day average (at 5829) Positive. Is above its 15-day average (at 5757) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 5787) Positive. Has crossed above its 200-day average (at 5833) Positive.
points level.
Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 5965 points level. The next resistance is at the 6108 points level.
Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 5853 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 5841. Support (2) = 5823. Resistance (1) = 5871. Resistance (2) = 5883.
OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index after having formed a hammer has formed a small white body candle on higher volumes. In fact, yesterday's candle is almost like a white body Marubozu candle. (A White Marubozu forms when the open equals the low and the close equals the high). Moreover, the body of this candle is above and outside the body of the previous candle indicating a range expansion and acceleration. This is positive. Further, the index has crossed above the 5 and 200 day’s moving averages. The index is now above the 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages. Moreover, a bullish hook formation is visible on the 5 day’s moving average. The velocity parameters continue to remain positively trended. All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a further upmove unfolding. Investors are advised to hold long positions but with a strict stop loss at the 15-day average at the 5757 point’s level. Work with strict stop losses on all positions
Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market with a positive bias.

ment has brought in considerable optimism, Ind-Ra believes the mere constitution of a regulator in itself cannot act as a panacea for all the problems facing the sector. The mandate given to the regulator and the resources provided to it for effective discharge of its duties in an independent and transparent manner, free from political interference, would be vital to realize GoI’s objectives. Concurrently, other reform measures such as restructuring Coal India and significantly expanding private sector’s participation in coal mining would also need immediate attention. The regulator is proposed to be set up through an executive fiat, demonstrating GoI’s urgency to address the problems plaguing the coal and power sectors. This is another milestone in the GoI’s reforms agenda that it has been pursuing fairly systematically in the last 12 months or so to fix many of the ills plaguing the stressed infrastructure sector. Parliament would need to pass a legislation constituting the authority.

If you are in love you can safely make commitment to the one you love.
TAURUS (April 21 - May 20): It is time to consolidate your position and not to take risk in new investment nor to start fresh ventures. A travel plan may have to be postponed for the time being. A person you know will have an interesting piece of information, which will set the pace for joyful events to come. Spend some time to renew old ties with associates.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 20): You Fast returns from efforts put into work are likely. Avoid investments until you find a real good bargain. Avoid Speculative ventures. You can achieve results by being diligent and aggressive in your efforts. To prevent disappointment keep business and friendships apart. CANCER (June 21 - July 21): There changes all around you and you cannot avoid being a part of it. Keep pace with what is happening around so that there are no unpleasant surprises. You have put in a lot of hard work and effort but results seem to fall short of your expectations. Be patient as good news is on the cards. A love interest suddenly shows signs of cooling down. Maybe you are feeling insecure or your beloved is feeling abandoned.
LEO (July 22 - August 21): Most things seem to be working against you today. Delays in completing your current assignment on schedule may also cause a lot of tensions. You will also face financial constraints adding to your discomfiture. Travel and communication could also be a problem You seem to be involved in too many things. This could make you hyper tense and overly sensitive. Find solace in friendship.
VIRGO (August 22 - September 21): Look forward to new alliances in new business ventures. Those working independently or as consultants will get a major contract. The frosty atmosphere is something you are not used to but be tolerant for the sake of your beloved who has in the past stood through thick and thin with you.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 December 20): You will get down to serious thinking about your future. Start with joining a training program to give a boost to your career. Sanction for seeking a loan for a fresh project will materialize. Your hunch regarding a certain deal or investment will lead to gains. A chance encounter with an attractive person of the opposite sex at a place of entertainment could bring about a romantic interest.
CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 19): Uncertainties in job or personal relationship are cleared today. An incident will change boring routine to an exciting one. You will receive wide acclaim but sadly not much income. You may have to look for some other source of money to keep you going. Tender loving care will help mend hurt egos. At home too you may have to make more of an effort to keep everyone happy.
AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18): For further growth be patient and dedicated to your ideals. The process is a tedious one. You should be paying more attention to finances but make no hasty decisions. Think in terms of lasting savings and not short term profits. You will have a pleasant philosophical experience. A long drawn out affair could now be proving to be tiresome. It seems complacency is making your love life a bit dull.
PISCES (February 19 - March 20): You may be given a large amount of money as an advance payment. Even though your financial position is strong, extra money will help to put a key plan into action. Overseas influences are strong and will lead to gain. A change of location is indicated for some. Meetings will be successful. In love matters come to a head but this time you will have all the right answers and win the day and the affections of your mate

IN BRIEF
Hockey coach Nobbs gets marching orders because of non-performance
Rovin qualifies for knock out Jambusaria, Shah also in
Indian hockey team gets instruction from their Chief Coach Michael Nobbs during the practise session at Balewadi Sports Complex, Pune prior to their Olympic campaign in 2012.
N
EW DELHI: Australian Michael Nobbs has been sacked as the chief coach of the Indian hockey team for non-performance, becoming the fourth foreign coach to be shown the door before completion of the full tenure. Hockey India Secretary General Narinder Batra said that Nobbs' contract has been terminated, almost three years before it was to expire. Roelant Oltmans, who is currently the High Performance Manager, has been given charge of the team until a new coach is appointed. Batra, however, claimed it was the Australian who decided to quit as he felt that he was not doing justice to his job. "He himself had offered to resign during a meeting with Roelant Oltmans. There were some issues with his coaching style. Oltmans felt there were some areas in which we were lacking and Nobbs was not being able to rectify them and not producing the desired results," Batra told PTI. "Accordingly, we have informed the SAI that we are not willing to avail his services anymore. For the time being Oltmans will take the additional responsi-
bility of coaching the men’s team. He will be in charge of the team till we find a suitable replacement which might take 2 to 3 months time," he added. Sports Authority of India Director General Jiji Thomson said that Nobbs' contract was terminated yesterday after giving him a month's notice period. "There was a clause in his (Nobbs) contract which states that we can stop availing his services by giving one month's notice. So, accordingly we informed him and gave him the notice period yesterday," Thomson. Thomson said SAI decided to discontinue Nobbs' services on the recommendation of Hockey India. "Hockey India approached us saying that Nobbs had expressed his desire to be relieved from his duties due to non-performance. As Nobbs was under SAI's payroll, we had to take the final decision," the SAI DG said. Nobbs, who took over the charge in 2011, was offered a fiveyear contract and a handsome salary, but his association with Indian hockey lasted merely two years and finally ended on a bitter note. Before Nobbs, Spaniard Jose Brasa, Australian Ric
Charlesworth and Germany's Gerhard Rach coached the Indian side but were pushed out due to several issues. Nobbs was looked upon as someone who can cure Indian hockey, but the Australian failed to change the fortunes of the past masters of the game. The only highlight of Nobbs' tenure was India's qualification for last year's London Olympics after having missed the Beijing edition of the Games. But since then there was no significant change in the performance of the team as eighttime champions India returned with a wooden spoon from London Olympics. Nobbs came under further scrutiny after India failed to book a direct ticket for the World Cup in The Hague, Netherlands scheduled for May-June, 2014, finishing a lowly sixth out of eight teams in last month's FIH World League semi-final at Rotterdam. Hinting that Hockey India was not impressed with Nobbs' performance, Batra said it was a mutual decision to part ways with the Australian. Batra said there was no point in continuing with a coach who lacked motivation
and commitment. "We felt he is not motivated anymore. He seemed to have been lacking in motivation as well as commitment. A national team can’t be coached by somebody who is not motivated and committed," the HI secretary general said. "So we both parties felt it’s time for us to move on," he said. Batra said Nobbs is presently in his home country Australia and HI will give him a "graceful" farewell once he returns next week to settle his papers. "He is presently in Australia. He is coming back on July 14th. It is not that we are pushing him out. We will send him in a graceful manner," Batra said. Meanwhile, the SAI DG said it had received HI's recommendation to appoint M K Kaushik as a coach with the men's hockey team only and it might take a week's time to come to a final decision. "Kaushik's recommendation has come to us today. We don't have any problem in appointing him, but we need to take the Sports Ministry's approval. We will send his file to the Sports Ministry and if cleared within a week's time his appointment should be finalised," Thomson said.
TWO LANKAN UMPIRES BANNED FOR MATCH FIXING C
OLOMBO: Sri Lankan umpires Sagara Gallage and Maurice de La Zilwa, who were caught in a TV sting willing to fix cricket matches for money, have been suspended for 10 and three years respectively while Gamini Dissanayake, the other accused umpire, was exonerated due to lack of evidence. After hearing the accused, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) have found
their involvement into the matter. Though Dissanayake has escaped punishment but he has been stripped of his seniority, SLC ex-co sources said. In October last year, an Indian news channel purportedly caught on camera six ICC umpires from Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh agreeing to help certain players, fix decisions as well
provide pitch and team information predominantly in the Sri Lanka Premier League. Besides the Sri Lankans, Nadeem Ghauri and Anees Siddiqui of Pakistan and Nadir Shah of Bangladesh were named. Sri Lankans Gallage, Maurice De la Zilwa and Gamini Dissanayake have been allegedly caught on tape agreeing to alter their deci-
sions for money. They all denied accusations and called for a probe to clear their names. Dissanayake was alleged to have "promised to revolt" against Sri Lankan cricket if compensated monetarily. He also purportedly claimed that by providing liquor to Sri Lankan Cricket (SLC) officials, one can get any work done.

SILVER LINING: His face shows his magnificent effort as Inderjeet Singh unleashes the shot put for his silver medal.
t’s a splendid tale of how an Indian overcomes odds to provide the sheen of silver to his effort. After taking part in the 20th Asian Athletics Champions hips in Pune where he finished fourth, 23-year-old Inderjeet Singh boarded a bus and came to Mumbai airport where he took an early morning flight to Dubai. From there he proceeded to Kazan in Russia to compete in the 27th World University Games. However, he was in for a rude shock as his accompanying baggage was misplaced by the airlines. Save for his passport and tickets and a bare change of clothes the doughty Inderjeet did not even have his practice kit nor his own shoes. Any other athlete would have
his confidence shattered, not so Inderjeet, who somehow squeezed his 11 and a half size feet into a pair of size 10, which he borrowed. What happened then was sheer brilliance, as Inderjeet who hails from Bhopal managed to produce his personal best of 19.70 metres to win India’s first-ever medal in athletics at World University Games. After a modest opening effort of 18.29 metres, the burly athlete fouled his fourth attempt before hurling the shot put to 19.70 metres on his fifth and penultimate attempt for his silver medal. Inderjeet’s effort managed to separate the Russians – gold medal winner Alexander Lesnoi (20.30 metres) and bronze medal winner Valeriy Kokoev (19.65m).
England wary of Ashes hype N
OTTINGHAM: These are good times to be a British sports fan. Last weekend saw the British and Irish Lions win their first series in 16 years when they defeated Australia in Sydney and Andy Murray become the first British winner of the Wimbledon Men’s Singles title since Fred Perry in 1936. Murray’s victory over Novak Djokovic sparked a mood of national sporting euphoria not seen since last year’s London Olympics when British competitors won a clutch of gold medals. But euphoria is a hard thing to translate from one sport to another. England are favourites as they bid for a third straight Test series win over-arch rivals Australia starting in Nottingham today.
However, the lesson of history is that touring Australia parties billed as “the weakest to travel for an Ashes” are rarely that. The last time that line was used was in 1989 when Australia regained the Ashes by a 4-0 margin. Australia were thrashed 4-0 in India, where England won late last year, in March and come into this series with huge question marks over their batting which, with the exception of captain Michael Clarke, battling a longstanding back problem, lacks proven world-class performers. However, an attack set to be led by Peter Siddle — fifth in the world rankings — and likely to feature promising paceman James Pattinson could cause England problems.

LANKAN VICTORY KEEPS ALL THREE TEAMS IN FRAY
SPORTS
P
ORT OF SPAIN: Sri Lanka kept themselves in contention for a berth in the final of the tri-nation ODI series with a comfortable 39-run victory over West Indies in a rain-hit game here, a result which has thrown tournament wide open with all three teams in fray for the title clash. Sri Lanka notched up 219 for eight in 41 overs, riding on Kumar Sangakkara's 95-ball 90 and then restricted the hosts to 190 for nine to record victory under Duckworth Lewis method after the match was stretched to reserve day due to rain interruptions. Kemar Roach (4/27) returned an economical four-wicket haul but other West Indies bowlers could not stop the run flow as Sri Lanka scored 159 in 22 overs after struggling at 60 for three in 19 overs. Angelo Mathews was another notable performer for the winners as he scored crucial 30 runs and then took four wickets for just 29 runs to play a crucial part in win. The win has catapulted Sri Lanka to top of the points table with nine points with the best (+1.019) Net-Run-Rate among the three teams. West Indies (0.383) also have nine points but are placed second due to inferior NRR. India are last on the table with five points and worst (0.524) NRR. Sri Lanka's victory has left India with no option but West Indies Lendl Simmons jumps while trying to drive a wide delivery off Sri to win today's match against the Lanka's Lasith Malinga during their Tri-Nation Series cricket match
Raina-Jadeja apologise for on-field spat
NEW DELHI: Ravindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina have apologised for their onfield spat during the ongoing tri-series match against the West Indies, which sparked off a debate about lack of harmony in the Indian dressing room. According to a BCCI official, both cricketers spoke to the team manager M V Sridhar and expressed regret for their on-field conduct. "Raina and Jadeja have spoken to the team manager and tendered unconditional apology for their on-field behaviour. They have promised that this type of an act won't be repeated again. Both the cricketers have understood that their conduct is unbecoming of a national team cricketer," a senior BCCI official told PTI. The interim chief of the BCCI, Jagmohan Dalmiya, had on Monday informed the mediapersons that the BCCI had sought a manager's report into the incident. No action will be taken against the two cricketers and they will not be penalised either but since the matter has snowballed into a controversy,

Jehan Daruvala secures double podium at Larkhall N
EW DELHI: Sahara Force India Academy driver, Jehan Daruvala, was back on the podium last weekend at the third round of the KFJ British Kart Championships in Larkhall, Scotland. The 14-year-old Indian racer was on the pace from the start of practice and finished second and third in the two heats on Saturday afternoon. Jehan then repeated that performance on Sunday, picking up points for two podium finishes. The strong showing saw Jehan end the event second overall. The result keeps Jehan in the hunt for the 2013 KFJ Series crown just 13 points behind Daniel Ticktum. Jehan will be back in action at Clay Pigeon, in Dorset, at the end of August for the fourth round of British Series. "Qualifying went off well and I finished the first heat in second place. For the second heat I came third, but I was able to match the pace of the drivers ahead of me. In the opening final, I started second and finished second, just half a second behind the winner," said Jehan. "In the second final I was determined to try to take the lead on lap two, but the move didn't work out and I dropped down to third. The results mean I'm still in a good position in the championship and it's another valuable learning experience for me," he added. Sahara Force India driver mentor, Terry Fullerton said: "Jehan showed great pace all weekend and finished a very close second in the third round of the series at Larkhall. It was important to pick up enough points to strengthen his position in the championship and with three events still to go he's very much in the hunt for the KFJ crown."

IOA to go ahead with July 11 meeting despite opposition
N
EW DELHI: The Indian Olympic Association will go ahead with its scheduled General Body meeting on Thursday here to discuss the roadmap prepared by the IOC for India’s return to Olympic fold, despite strong opposition by some members who feel such a conclave will serve no purpose at this stage.
The IOA was to hold its GBM on Thursday following an earlier directive of the International Olympic Committee to amend its constitution by July 15 but now it has to change its plan after the IOC extended the deadline, saying that it would need more time to study the proposed amendments.
