BMC PROMISES BETTER ROADS BY MAY 20 Allocates Rs.6 crore for preventive maintenance of major roads and Rs.2 crore for minor ones

ore than a month after the Bombay High Court directed Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) and Additional Commissioner of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to submit reports on the progress made towards easing traffic woes and maintenance of roads across the city, the BMC on Thursday informed the court that all the work of roads in the city and suburbs will be completed by May 20. This response by the BMC comes as the division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice M.S. Sanklecha was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Bombay Bar Association seeking strict implementation of traffic rules and regulations and proper maintenance of

roads.In the earlier hearing on February 27, the bench had directed the Joint Commissioner to study the problems and submit a report indicating the progress made by the traffic police towards the issue. It had also asked the Additional Municipal Commissioner S.V.R. Srinivas to submit a report by April 7 stating the progress the civic body has made since April last year on road repairs and maintenance. While hearing the petition on Thursday, the BMC submitted a report by Srinivas which stated that Rs.6 crore worth tenders and work orders for preventive maintenance work have been issued for major roads and Rs.2 crore for minor and arterial roads. “156 locations in western suburbs, 63 in eastern suburbs and 179 locations in the city have been identified for

pre-monsoon repair. The work has started and will be completed by May 20. The civic body has taken up work orders worth Rs.2,700 crore for concretisation of roads,” said the report. Based on these submissions, the bench accepted the report and posted the petition for further hearing in June. In the earlier hearing, the court was also informed by state government advocate A.S. Saluja that digitisation of data concerning registration number of vehicles post-2006 was completed except for information regarding autorickshaws, taxis, trucks and tempos, which are yet to be collected. oes being diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease (PD) mean living a life that lacks quality and independence? No. With willpower and the urge to lead a happy life, PD does not have to be a hurdle in the way of leading a good life. And Shail Pandey, a 65-year-old grandmother, is a living example of this fact. Shail, who has been living with PD for the past sixteen years, is as independent as the rest of us. Looking at Shail would not give anybody the idea that she is a PD patient. Her well-maintained brightly painted nails, well-kept hair and cute dressing sense makes her as adorable as any grandmother. It's only when she speaks that her slur gives up her condition. But she couldn't care less because she loves talking. Cooking and reading magazines are also activities that she enjoys. But painting is her ultimate passion. It is a means of getting away from pain and symptoms of PD. “When I paint, I forget everything. It not only keeps me busy but makes me feel special. I love the colours and designs,” said Shail, the walls of whose two-bedroom-hall-kitchen flat at Wadala is decorated with her own paintings. Shail who was diagnosed with

PDMDS is a first-of-its-kind community care-based model with the aim to improve care and treatment of people living with Parkinson’s and its spectrum disorders, to disseminate knowledge amongst the medical community, public, patients and caretakers. The PDMDS was founded in 2005 by Dr. B.S Singhal a well-known neurologist in the city. With 12 centres across the city, it has around 1,000 patients under its care.

Prevalence of PD: Speaking numbers, Dr. Maria Barretto, CEO, PDMDS said, “Globally, one per cent of all the people above the age of sixty have PD. In India, there are more than nine crore people above the age of 65 so more than nine lakh people have PD in India.” Going by the global average, when around seven per cent of Maharashtra's population of 11.23 crore are senior citizens (around 78 lakhs), then 78,000 people in the state have PD. “Every year we add around 100 to 150 new people to our groups. Doctors too refer patients to us as they have realised that along with medical help, these people need support and care. Previously, the referrals used to be 10 per cent of our new entrants. But now, with an increase in awareness, 60 per cent of new cases are referrals from doctors and the remaining 40 per cent are referrals from patients themselves and the spread of word through our awareness programs,” said Dr. Barretto.

The idea of organising an evening on the sea for seniors was primarily Kishore Kuvavala’s brainchild. “I, with a few of Laughter Club members, approached morning walkers here in South Mumbai to get them to come with us and enjoy an evening on the sea”, he recalled talking about how it all began. Then, Kuvavala approached Shipping Minster Milind Deora who got the necessary permissions for the cruise cleared.

This cruise was, incidentally, the seventh in a row of similar events organised for the senior citizens. “It was on November 24 last year when we went on the first trip with 80-90 senior citizens. It was a colossal hit back then. Everyone enjoyed immensely and we were keen on repeating it over and over again. The idea was to include a different set of seniors with each trip so that more and more seniors can partake in the joys of a field trip at sea”, Kuvavala said. The event primarily for senior citizens had been organised with extreme care. Every precaution was taken by the JNPT, which ensured

that a medical staff stayed on board throughout the trip and the cruise itself remained fully equipped with crisis medication at all times, should there be an emergency. Why, there was an oxygen cylinder too on the cruise. Among the seniors were 85-yearold Vasudev Acharaya and 82-yearold Shushila Chawla, the oldest yet the most spirited of the lot. And, there was an Indian-American retired psychiatrist, Cham Rao, in the city on a vacation who participated too. gajanan@draftcraft.in

A large number of criminals in Lok Sabha poll fray I

t is estimated that half the number of candidates who are contesting in the Lok Sabha elections are criminals. They are involved in crimes like murder, extortion, rape and assault. In one poll segment, the number of candidates with criminal charges against them is as much as 70 per cent. It is being said that democracy has been firmly established in our country and all citizens have equal rights. The pertinent question is whether a person who has killed or raped must also be given a chance to sit in the Lok Sabha. There has been angry voices against the practice of giving tickets to criminals, but nothing has changed, most of the members of parliament are themselves against putting any ban on participation of criminals in Lok Sabha elections. The court itself has taken note of the disturbing situation and has at last said that those MPs charged with crime and convicted should not sit in the House. Following this verdict by the court, Laloo Prasad Yadav had to make his exit from the Lok Sabha. All party leaders however do not want any ban to be put on criminals even if charges are framed against them. It looks like these criminals have a lot of muscle and money power which helps in winning elections. The criterion appears to be the extent of capacity of a candidate to enlist voter support. The poll managers want results. They do not bother how the criminals get support of people. In some regions, it is a fact that criminals are very popular. They have money power which attracts voters. Muscle power – force – also works. No wonder the repeated attempts by activists and some clean politicians to keep elections out of the reach of criminals have not succeeded. What is a matter for concern is that in this Lok Sabha elections, a large number of criminals might be elected. Since all political parties are totally against imposing a ban, there is little chance of ever having a clean Lok Sabha.

We must start with three things. First, we must have RIGHT FAITH , we must believe in truth. Second, we must have the RIGHT KNOWLEDGE, we must study to understand what life is all about. Third, we must follow RIGHT CONDUCT, the conduct which our faith and knowledge show us to be correct. These are the 'three jewels', ratnatraya, of Jainism. RIGHT FAITH is perhaps the hardest of all. Nobody can tell us what we can believe, but we can look at the message of Mahavira and believe that he really did know what he was

talking about and that his message makes sense. Mahavira's message contains the basis of RIGHT KNOWLEDGE. Life is a puzzle. Where did we come from before birth? Where do we go after death? Nobody's life is completely and totally happy, but why do some people have lives of great misery and others have much joy? Mahavira teaches us that this is not the result of the whims of some distant god. No, each one of us is what we have made our-

He saw doctrine as a casket, fit for a graveyard.” And then we have Gargi Gupta who practically summed up Khushwant's entire life by saying: “To national debate he brought in a robust contrarian view, which will be missed. Secular to the core, a non-believer to the depth of his heart, he was often ahead of his times. In an age when religious fundamentalism seemed a threat he was a beacon of hope. It is that beacon that has dimmed for ever.” To sum it all up, wrote Vikram Seth: “One feels he is still around”. David Davidar said something more, “When they made him, they broke the mould and I am sure I will never meet his like again...he will be sorely missed.” And to that one might add another tribute, this one from Geeta Doctor, who, writing in The Hindu said, “In the once and forever glory days of journalism there will only be one king and that man is now dead.” freedom and ties us down to one life after another. This is usually translated as 'non-violence', but it goes beyond that and really means the greatest possible kindness to all living things. This is the first and fundamental rule which we should try to follow, to get rid of violence in all our actions and even in our thoughts. EW DELHI: SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Thursday drew flak from political parties and women and social activists for questioning capital punishment to rapists and saying “boys commit mistakes” for which they should not be hanged. Hours after his highly controversial comments, Congress slammed Yadav saying these were ‘unfortunate’. “It is unfortunate that any leader makes such a statement regarding a crime like rape. Such statements encourage persons involved in such crimes,” Congress spokesperson Shobha Oza told PTI. EW DELHI: High voter turnout was recorded in the 91 constituencies in 14 states and Union Territories which went to polls in the third and substantial phase of Lok Sabha elections, with Chandigarh witnessing the highest percentage of 74. Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Bihar witnessed naxal related violence which left 2 CRP jawans and one state police personnel dead. The voter turnout this time was substantially higher over the last Lok Sabha elections in all the constituencies. Muzaffarnagar and Shamli in Uttar Pradesh, which witnessed communal riots in August last year, recorded ‘above average’ voter turnout of 67.78 per cent and 70.85 per cent, respectively, Deputy EC Vinod Zutshi told PTI. The 10 seats of Uttar Pradesh, which went to polls on Thursday, reported a record turnout of 65 per cent as compared to 51.30 per cent recorded in the last LS polls. House of Cards: This White House drama combines conspiracy, corruption and Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright playing the strangest power couple you've ever seen. This show beats

everything else out of the water. Game of Thrones: Blood, gore and a lot of fantasy — the Song of Ice and Fire books were always popular, so when HBO decided to make them into a hard-hitting, fast-paced television show where no one is safe, it’s no surprise it became a show you cannot skip watching. Revenge: American primetime television loves this show and if you're the sort of person who likes a heady dose of family drama (think of it as an English version of a saas-bahu show) with a good dose of revenge thrown in, 27-year-old Emily VanCamp will thrill you through her journey to avenge her wrongfully jailed and subsequently killed father.

True Detective: Technically, since this show just about wrapped up, we shouldn't be putting it on a list of currently airing shows. However, the American crime drama show, starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as two of the best homicide detectives on television is worth watching if you haven't already. So, use your weekend to binge-watch all 8 episodes of the show. White Collar: We love, love, love Neal Caffrey (Matt Bomer) and after you watch this show, you will too. The conartist who works mostly for the good guys is a great watch. Castle: A writer, a detective, a few laughs and a lot of bad guys is what makes Castle an entertaining show.

It's not just premium channels that will give you access to all the latest TV shows. Other TV channels too have a number of new shows on air. While there might not be several options, something is better than nothing. Check them out: aXN: The Voice is one of the best reality singing shows out there and AXN ensures that Indian audiences don’t miss out on the fun. The episodes are broadcast on the first weekend after they are aired in the USA. Comedy Central: The concept of a channel devoted to comedy is a great one, but the programming hasn’t been the best. However, they have been responsible for bringing the comicdrama Suits to India. In the past they have done it a few weeks after the series’ finale in the US and with the second-half of the third season on air in the US right now, it shouldn’t be long before the channel brings the show back to our screens. Zee Cafe: Zee Cafe is our favourite from the non-premium channels. They currently have the latest episodes of shows such as The Big Bang Theory (pictured) and American Idol that are a few days after they do in the USA. The channel was also the first one to bring Netflix's successful show House of Cards to Indian telly sets.

ction Breaks Silence, founded by UK-based Debi Stevens, is a not for profit company working to help underprivileged girls and women. In association with the NGO Vidya, they will be conducting two workshops in the city on personal safety and self-defence, designed to better equip girls to protect and ultimately empower themselves in their daily lives. This workshop will be led by a highly trained team of men and women from the UK, assisted by trainee self-defence instructors from CSK Kalari from Bangalore, Marari Beach Resort from Kerala and The Red Brigade from Lucknow. The workshops are aimed at underprivileged teenage girls who are concerned about their welfare and safety and will provide them with practical solutions to address these fears. The workshop is open to all for a minimal fee. Physical self-defence skills will be taught in realistic scenarios, providing the girls with useful techniques as well as a sense of empowerment. These workshops will be conducted at two municipal schools in Mumbai. Debi tells us, “So far, Action Breaks Silence has taught over 5,000 girls and women in India for free. arch madness and heatrelated tantrums usually define my summer, so finding a way to relax is at the top of

my agenda. Understandably, this is the best time to visit a spa, especially when the spa in question is Bandra's foot spa champion, Sukho Thai. Not

Mango Therapy (70-minutes if you're running short on time, though I suggest you get the full experience) — their seasonal scrub offering for the summer. But, I was speculative about how much value-for-money I'd be getting, with the treatment’s `2,790 price tag. Sukho Thai has never been cheap, but when you say mango scrub and that amount together, you tend to choke up a little. The one issue I usually have at spas that have the open-chair format of Sukho Thai rather than exclusive rooms, is that as good as your therapy may be, boorish customers can ruin it for you, which is something the spa can do very little to control. As luck would have it, I was treated to some loud noises, a few cellphone pings and some incessant chatter from the back rooms, but thankfully, the disturbances passed and I could settle in for the treatment, which may not have exceeded, but definitely matched expectations. The scrub in question includes 30 minutes of exfoliation, with a scrub that smelt only very faintly of mango — and more like a mango sweet than fresh mangoes. Barring a few extremely ticklish moments near my toes and the occasional lack of water (but not enough to chaff my skin) the scrub was well applied, leaving my legs feeling soft and fresh. This was usually one to disappoint, I wasn't followed by one of the best foot particularly worried about the massages I've had the pleasure of quality of treatment when I visited to experiencing, keeping in tune with try the pampering, 90-minute Sukho Thai's reputation. Service at the spa is great, the therapists are warm and friendly and they will ensure that you're comfortably reclining in the big armchairs before your therapy begins. They also give you enough time to enjoy the delicious tea and bowl of fruits that you’re served after it’s done. Cooling scrubs and massages are very often cooling only when you're at the spa. But, as I stepped out onto the sultry roads, my legs were not only ridiculously soft (the softness as well as the glow lasted for three days, which left me very impressed), they were also incredibly cool. The massage oil left a peppermint fresh feeling on my legs, so much so that they remained oblivious to the pollution as well as the summer heat. It's safe to say that Sukho Thai left my skin relaxed, smooth and glowing for days, so I was more than a little satisfied. A little more mango in the scrub that would have left a heady mango scent lingering on my skin would have made this treatment more worthy. The price tag will still leave you wondering whether to opt for the treatment or not, so it won’t become your go-to summer massage. estled in Bandra-Kurla Complex, Café Infinito houses a small outdoor eating section as well as a much larger indoor area, replete with a bar, a projector and spaced out seating. As we settled into our booth, the warm lighting and cosy wooden seating (always a plus point) did a good job of making the space feel more leisurely in comparison to many other restaurants that urge you to eat and leave in a hurry. We started off with a Chocolate Coffee Frappe (`200) and a Monsoon Malabar Mild Coffee (`150). Both the beverages were delicious. For starters, we tried the Basil Gnocchi with Harrisa Fondue (`275), the Jalapeno and Cheese Poppers (`200) and the Balti Spiced Chicken Skewers with Homemade Aioli (`300). The gnocchi was excellent and the harissa spiked fondue accompanied it well. The jalapeno and cheese poppers were great too, as they were the right consistency and had just the right amount of spice — enough to make you want to reach out for another one, but not spicy enough to

make your eyes water. However, the balti spiced chicken skewers were just average, as no particular flavour stood out to make it a memorable dish. We also tried the Chorizo Ravioli with Honey & Chilli emulsion and Aubergine Capanota (`250), as well as the Stuffed Chilli with Mozzarella, Parmesan & Lime Rind (`175). Although they used pepperoni slices instead of chorizo, the ricotta cheese stuffing (the pepperoni slice is the casing) and pepperoni were a great combination. Minimally spiced with a herb and honey drizzle, this was the appetiser we polished off the fastest. But, the aubergine capanota was missing! The stuffed chillies however, aren't for the faint-hearted. They pack a solid punch and even though they are stuffed with cheese, the spice quotient isn't mellow. We also tried the Downtowner Pizza (`650), which came loaded with pepperoni, chicken sausages, mushrooms and onions. The crust seemed a little soggy, but the filling more than made up for it. The tomato base (something I find that very few places get right) was just right — neither too sour, nor too sweet. Since we had enjoyed the basil gnocchi starter so much, we couldn't help but order the Homemade Patata Gnocchi with Lamb Ragout (`475). However, this one was a let down. The lamb ragout was just about average but the preparation fell flat, largely because of the lack of textures, making it a rather pasty dish. For dessert we tried the Tres Lesches (`225) and the Crème Brûlée (`225). The coconut based Tres Lesches was delicious, moist and creamy. The only gripe we had with it was that it was a tad too sweet. The crème brûlée on the other hand was perfect. Right from the consistency to the sweetness, there was nothing we could find fault with. Packed with vanilla seeds and accompanied by an equally delicious almond biscotti, we devoured spoon after spoon even though we were absolutely stuffed! If you haven't already gotten the drift, Café Infinito is definitely worth visiting, both for the food and the ambience. With pricing that is affordable and justifies the quality of food, Café Infinito is a great option if you're looking to eat out.

Over the years, Olive has blossomed into more than a restaurant and is a melting pot where life imitates art and often, the other way around. Displaying a gastronomic pedigree, The Olive Bar & Kitchen dazzles its patrons with fresh, local ingredients, skillfully cooked in the new Mediterranean style. Olive recently launched its new, luxurious set menu, conjured up by Chef Sujan S. The friendly, talented chef is not only proud of his recipes but has much to say about each ingredient he uses while cooking the dish. His food philosophy stems from a childhood that was deeply entrenched in the love of food with fresh, seasonal produce from mushrooms in the winter to honey in the summer, a variety of poultry and hand churned butter available in his backyard. The set menu assures not to disappoint. It is loaded with gourmet ingredients such as romanesco and kumquat jam. The soups and salads have excellent vegetarian options such as the Roasted Pumpkin & Green Beans (`450) and Marinated Beetroot salad (`450). We were pleased to find that pumpkin and beetroot could be flavoured to suit our tastes. Another preparation that stood out was the Gazpacho Salad (`400). This is a fresh tomato salad, made with six different types of tomatoes and topped with chilled Gazpacho soup. The frozen mozzarella is the star ingredient and melts on your tongue. For non-vegetarians, the Tuna Nicoise (`600) is an excellent salad, made with locally sourced quail eggs and seared tuna. Skip the small plate starters and pizzas as they

bring nothing new to the table. But, jump straight to the meals and you are bound to get your appetite back. Once again, there were plenty of options for vegetarians. Fettucini Primavera (`650) made with handmade fettucini, pesto, seasonal vegetables and pine nuts makes for a light summer dish. For meat lovers, the Slow Cooked Pork Belly (`1,050) is a must-have. The pork belly is marinated for 24-hours and roasted for six hours to get perfectly crispy skin. The Pan Seared Sea Bass (`1,550), served with a shrimp oil infused butter and a locally sourced romanesco was also delicious. To end our meal on a sweet note, the chef brought us the Warm Banana & Walnut Cake (`400) and the Tiramisu (`400). The wholesome meal left us with a smile on our face.

From there, a taxi ride (approximately `1,200) or one of the frequently-plying, well-maintained local buses (`20) will get you to Kasol in a little over an hour.

asol is the most notorious of all settlements in Parvati Valley, something that owes far more to the beauty of the towering hills that encircle it (some snow-clad, some pine-green) and the marvellous River Parvati that flows through it, than most people will credit them for. When we reached the taxi station in Kasol, we were greeted by signboards painted in English and Hebrew, advertising small cafés and hotels. They serve the standard dishes targeted at European tourists, such as bagels, waffles, Nutella pancakes and pasta, as well as several Israeli dishes, including the popular pita bread with hummus. The food is usually very good, but service can be abysmal. Kasol attracts the bulk of its visitors from April to September and many cafés remain closed during the winter. We visited in February, so tourists were few and far between and the scenery was more white than green, especially higher up the mountains. The thirty-minute walk from Kasol to a small village called Chalal, was our unexpected reward for the long hours of travel we had endured. We embarked on a casual hike over long, rickety bridges, through quiet, chilly woods of pine, with the Parvati roaring past... it was perfect. I couldn’t stop smiling as I passed horses grazing among the trees. We were privy to clear weather, which allowed us to fully appreciate our surroundings. accompanied us throughout, even when the trees hid the river from sight. Using your earphones on that walk would be a crime beyond punishment. Even if we hadn’t been stopping every two steps to take photographs, catching up with our smiling porters was impossible; strong and sure-footed that their lives in the mountains had made them. We were lucky enough to find a very likeable man (known as Guruji by some in Chalal) who agreed to lend us his brightly painted cottage for three days. If you’re on a budget and want a more rustic atmosphere during your stay, skip the hotels in Kasol and ask the locals for help with a homestay, or a basic guesthouse. But, even if you prefer to shell out for a room with the comforts of modern heating and room service, there’s no dearth of options. Charging up to `9,000 a room during peak season, the Himalayan Village offers the most luxurious experience and spectacular view in town. At approximately `2,500, Parvati Kuteer and Sandhya Guest House are great as more balanced options. Chalal is filled with tiny cottages and hospitable villagers. The many cafés here, including the Shiva Garden Café and Freedom Café, serve great Western and Indian dishes just like their Kasol counterparts and play Psytrance music all day. When you’re seated at one of these cafés, snowcapped mountains, coniferous forests, and tiny, terraced fields fill your view. Coupled with the omnipresent rumble of the river nearby, it creates a deeply satisfying ambience. The best parts of my day were spent walking around Chalal and down the rough trails to the rock-strewn, pebbled banks of the river. Sitting atop a large rock, feet dangling above water that rushed by just a few feet below, trying in vain to do justice to the marvelous panorama of green and white hills and the cloudy blue sky reflected in the river with my photographs… the experience was almost therapeutic. We moved on to Tosh, a picturesque little village of stilted huts and cottages on slopes overlooking the

Tosh Nallah, that flows through the valley before joining the Parvati River. It can be reached via road, after the snow clears up in March, but the more popular way to reach it is via a 2-hour trek of medium difficulty from Kasol. Kheer Ganga is a much harder, 6-7 hour affair, with the promise of high-altitude hotsprings and the best view in Parvati Valley at the end of it. The few accommodations available at the top are partial to foreigners, so be sure to book ahead. Our next stop was Barshaini, a small village that's an hour’s drive up bumpy ghats in a taxi from Kasol. We twisted in our seats throughout the journey for a better look at the white peaks surrounding us. We were on our way to Tosh, but the taxi driver was unwilling to continue beyond Barshaini, anticipating harsh weather and un-motorable roads. So, we left the taxi behind and walked towards Pulga Dam. It began to snow and we surrendered to the thrilled, childish wonder common among those unfamiliar with an experience like this. With the dreamy spread of whitewashed mountains and valleys before us and snowflakes swirling all around, it was hard to be disappointed. Parvati Valley will exceed your expectations, regardless of your preferences; its adventurous treks, delicious food, helpful locals, secret parties among the pines, lazy riverside walks, quaint villages and sheer, undeniable beauty all add up to make it an unbeatable experience.

On a journey to San Francisco, Richard, his father and cousin Emmeline find themselves on a ship about to explode. Rushed to a lifeboat with Paddy Button, the two children escape while their father (and uncle) are on another lifeboat. In the chaos following, the lifeboats are separated. Paddy, Richard and Emmeline find themselves with no food and no water stuck in the middle of nowhere. After some time, the three come across an uncharted paradise, where Paddy quickly teaches the children fishing, hunting and building. After maybe a month or two, Paddy gets very drunk off a barrel of rum found on the island when they first arrive, and drowns in the middle of the night. REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose marginally on Thursday (April 10, 2014) a net 0.20 points and closed flat at the 6796 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 6803 points level. It then turned into a range bound movement until 11.35 a.m. The index then rose sharply into the green and registered the day’s high at the 6819 points level at 11.57 a.m. It then declined and then turned into a range bound movement until 3.15 p.m. The market then declined sharply into the red and registered the day’s low at the 6777 points level at 3.29 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session and moved in a range of 42 points. Sentiment was mixed and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 23 were gainers, 26 were losers and 1 remained unchanged. Substantial buying was seen in power, capital goods and realty stocks, while selling was witnessed in healthcare, IT, technology, FMCG and consumer durables stocks.. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 20.05%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors. Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 885 were gainers, 677 were losers and 37 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is above the slow D line (positive if it continues).

RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level and is now turned flat (positive if it rises). MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market but with a neutral bias. Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 6446 points level. The next support is at the 6338 points level.

Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 6809 points level. The next resistance is at the 6874 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are:

Pivot point = 6798 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 6776. Support (2) = 6756. Resistance (1) = 6818. Resistance (2) = 6839. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a doji pattern. This indicates indecisiveness amongst investors. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the index is above its 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the four averages are rising and also positively trended. Further, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. Both these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a further up move unfolding. Investors are advised to hold long positions.

utual funds witnessed huge redemption of Rs 1.09 lakh crore by investors in March, making it the highest monthly outflow in three years. According to the data released by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) today, liquid or money market witnessed significant outflows, although income funds and non-gold ETFs (Exchange Traded Fund) saw some inflows. The net redemption of Rs 1,08,951 crore in the last month of FY14 is the highest monthly outflow since March 2011, when mutual funds had witnessed redemption to the tune of Rs 1.27 lakh crore. Market participants said the redemption was mainly on account of large investments being pulled out by banks in the last month of a financial year while preelections ouflow could also have been a reason. In terms of category, liquid or money market witnessed the highest outflow of Rs 1.17 lakh crore in March. Besides, equity fund saw outflow worth Rs 2,102 crore and Gold ETFs witnessed a pull out of Rs 149 crore. On the other hand, income fund saw investment to the tune of Rs 7,838 crore, while non-gold ETFs witnessed infusion valued at Rs 3,087 crore. This outflow has pulled down the average AUM (Asset Under Management) of the country's 44 fund houses to Rs 8.25 lakh crore at the end of March 31, 2014 from Rs 8.76 lakh crore in the previous threemonth period. Earlier, some mutual funds had come under scanner of the capital markets watchdog Sebi and industry's front-line regulator AMFI for allegedly window-dressing their fiscal-end assets base through illicit trade. To ring-fence their AUM from such redemption pressure, some mutual funds tend to park their assets with large investors to meet their redemptions and buy them back in April.

NEW FUND OFFERS HSBC MF India Launches ‘Managed Solutions’ Fund HSBC Mutual Fund, India has launched an open ended fund of funds scheme 'HSBC Managed Solutions', which will invest into various asset classes including domestic and foreign equity, long and short-term debt and gold. As per the fund house, the new scheme is based on the principle of active asset allocation in which investments are managed dynamically across asset classes and rebalanced regularly to ensure optimal allocation for risk profiles. The new fund offer, which opened on April 8, will close for subscription on April 23, 2014, a company release said. "HSBC Managed Solutions allows people who do not have the time and expertise to manage their own portfolios to benefit from flexible asset allocation executed by our global teams in a disciplined, risk-aware and cost effective approach, with the goal of capturing long-term growth," Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Global Asset Management, India, Puneet Chaddha said. The fund house also said that the new scheme is tailored to fit risk profiles of a broad range of investors and is available in growth, moderate and conservative options.

Motilal Oswal Launches Open-Ended Equity Scheme Motilal Oswal Mutual Fund has launched a new open-ended diversified equity scheme - Most Focused Multicap 35 Fund. The new scheme seeks to achieve long-term capital appreciation by primarily investing in a maximum of 35 equity and equity-related instruments across sectors and market capitalisation levels, a company release said. The new fund offer, which opened for subscription from April 7, will close on April 17, 2014. The scheme will allocate a minimum of 65 % to equities and a maximum of 35 % in debt or money market instruments. It may also invest in foreign securities up to 10 % of total net assets, the company said. "In the long run, we have always seen alternating cycles of out-performance between large-cap, mid-cap and small-cap stocks."From that perspective, this new scheme becomes an ideal core holding proposition in an investor's equity portfolio allocation," said Aashish Somiyaa, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Motilal Oswal AMC.

onderla Holidays, a Bangalore-based company, plans to tap the capital market to raise about Rs 190 crore through an initial public offering (IPO). The issue will open on April 21 and close on April 23. The price band for the offering has been fixed between Rs 115 and Rs 125 per share. The company will issue 1.45 cr shares of face value Rs 10 each. The IPO will result in dilution of 25.66% of the paid up equity share capital of the company. Wonderla Holidays runs two amusement parks and one resort. The amusement parks are in Kochi and Bangalore. The company is raising the capital to build a new amusement park in Hyderabad. The project cost of the new project is Rs 250 cr. The company has acquired 49.57 acres of land for this amusement park and also all the required permissions for the same. Piramal Enterprises yesterday said it will sell its 11 per cent stake in Vodafone India to the UK based telecom giant for Rs 8,900 crore. The company has agreed to divest its entire equity stake, comprising 45,425,328 shares (11 per cent), in Vodafone India Ltd to Prime Metals, an indirect subsidiary of Vodafone Group Plc, for a total consideration of Rs 8,900 crore, Piramal Enterprises said in a statement. The company has valued the shares of Vodafone India Ltd at Rs 1,960 per share, it added.

Ramco Systems Plans To Raise `123 Crore From Rights Issue

IT services company Ramco Systems yesterday said it aims to raise over Rs 123 crore by offering shares to existing investors. The company will offer about 79.58 lakh shares through the rights issue in a ratio of one equity share for every two held as of the record date of April 23. Each share with a face value of Rs 10 will be offered at Rs 155, Ramco said in a filing to the BSE. The rights issue will open on May 5 and close on May 19. The issue closing date may be extended provided the offer period does not exceed 30 days, it said. The Chennai-based company is increasing focus on enterprise cloud platform, products and services as well as increasing its marketing presence globally. Television has not eluded him. We remember his role as the evil Lt. Governor of Punjab Richard Williams in ‘Mohe Rang De’. His newest film ‘The Dark Secrets of Tonhi’ is about to release and he’s getting chatty about it. By Sandeep Hattangadi

Tell us about your role in 'The Dark Secrets of Tonhi'. I play the lead role in the film, Dr. Kenneth Joyce. He is an American doctor who works for a doctors without borders type of organization. He comes to Chhattisgarh, where kids are mysteriously dying, to find out why. What he discovers puts him in conflict with some of the locals. How was your experience shooting this film? It was great fun and interesting. We had a great unit. The director Henry Shiraz is a talented guy.

Tell us something about your forthcoming films. One is 'Gang of Ghosts', directed

Shortly after that, I don’t know the date of release, is 'Lokmanya', a Marathi film directed by Om Raut. I am presently shooting 'Phantom', directed by Kabir Khan and 'Vagator Mixer' directed by Suneil Anand.

Which roles have given you the most satisfaction? They all have in some way, as they taught me something about my new craft as a film actor. But to be honest I am still waiting for a really great character to play.

Tell us about your experiences in the Indian entertainment industry? It has been great. I was a theatre actor in New York and only started doing film here. The transition from stage to screen has been more challenging than the transition from New York to Bombay.

Your favourite Hindi and Hollywood actors and directors? Let me say here that I have never acted in Hollywood or even have been there, so any directors I like, I do strictly as a fan. Some of my favorites are Steven Spielberg, Woody Allen and Spike Lee. I am sure there are others, but they have slipped my mind. As for Indian film makers (I say Indian because I have acted in Bengali, Marathi and Malayalam films as well) I like any director who is smart enough to work with me. Very succinctly put Brandon!

NEW DELHI: Indian football team jumped seven places to 145th, the highest since August last, in the latest FIFA rankings released today. India gained six cumulative points (144 in total) over the past month to rise to 145th from 152nd, despite not playing any international match during the period. The national team became the second highest gainer among Asian countries after Vietnam, which jumped nine places to be at 116th. India had occupied 145th in August last. The highest ranking in recent times was the 143rd in March last. India also gained three places among Asian countries to be at 25th spot from 28th last month. Afghanistan jumped five places to be at their all time high of 122nd, the highest among South Asian countries. India are second in the South Asian region. RETORIA: Under pummelling crossexamination, Oscar Pistorius admitted today that he had "no reason" to fire the shots that killed Reeva Steenkamp, as prosecutors began to zero in on apparent inconsistencies in key parts of his account. During the second day of gruelling questioning, prosecutor Gerrie Nel began to pick at Pistorius's explanation of why he fired four times through his toilet door on Valentine's Day 2013. Pistorius has been charged with murdering his 29-year-old model girlfriend and faces a life sentence if convicted. The Olympian has said he fired the shots accidentally and did not mean to kill anyone. He testified that he feared someone was coming through the toilet door and that his life was in danger. This seemingly contradictory account was probed at length by Nel, who drew a concession from Pistorius that the shots should not have been fired at all. UBAI: The ICC today paved the way for Associate Members to earn Test status by introducing the 'ICC Test Challenge' which will take place every four years between lowest ranked Test team and winner of ICC InterContinental Cup. The decision, taken at the ICC's Executive Board meeting, will effectively mean that one among Bangladesh and Zimbabwe --the two lowest-ranked Test teams in ICC rankings will have to fight it out with the likes of The Netherlands, Ireland or UAE for Test status. "The ICC Board approved the introduction of an ICC Test Challenge which will take place every four years between the lowest ranked Test team and the winner of the ICC Intercontinental Cup," a media release issued by ICC said. "The proposal is that the 10th ranked side on the Reliance ICC Test Team Rankings on 31 December 2017, or at the conclusion of any series in progress at that time, will play two five-day matches at home and two fiveday matches away against the winner of the upcoming ICC Intercontinental Cup, with the inaugural Challenge scheduled to take place during 2018," it said. In the next eight years, two ICC Intercontinental Cup tournaments are planned with the first to run from 2015 to 2017 and the second to be held between 2019 and 2021. The second ICC Test
