BMC PROMISES BETTER ROADS BY MAY 20 Allocates Rs.6 crore for preventive maintenance of major roads and Rs.2 crore for minor ones

ore than a month after the Bombay High Court directed Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) and Additional Commissioner of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to submit reports on the progress made towards easing traffic woes and maintenance of roads across the city, the BMC on Thursday informed the court that all the work of roads in the city and suburbs will be completed by May 20. This response by the BMC comes as the division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice M.S. Sanklecha was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Bombay Bar Association seeking strict implementation of traffic rules and regulations and proper maintenance of

roads. In the earlier hearing on February 27, the bench had directed the Joint Commissioner to study the problems and submit a report indicating the progress made by the traffic police towards the issue. It had also asked the Additional Municipal Commissioner S.V.R. Srinivas to submit a report by April 7 stating the progress the civic body has made since April last year on road repairs and maintenance. While hearing the petition on Thursday, the BMC submitted a report by Srinivas which stated that Rs.6 crore worth tenders and work orders for preventive maintenance work have been issued for major roads and Rs.2 crore for minor and arterial roads. “156 locations in western suburbs, 63 in eastern suburbs and 179 locations in the city have been identified for

pre-monsoon repair. The work has started and will be completed by May 20. The civic body has taken up work orders worth Rs.2,700 crore for concretisation of roads,” said the report. Based on these submissions, the bench accepted the report and posted the petition for further hearing in June. In the earlier hearing, the court was also informed by state government advocate A.S. Saluja that digitisation of data concerning registration number of vehicles post-2006 was completed except for information regarding autorickshaws, taxis, trucks and tempos, which are yet to be collected. That process would be completed by May this year. “Earlier, there were 99 CCTV cameras across the city. An additional 118 cameras

espite the searing heatwave across the 10 Lok Sabha constituencies in theVidarbha region, the overall voting percentage at the end of polling yesterday evening was pegged at 62.36 per cent. Lok Sabha constituencies of Akola, Amravati (SC), Wardha, Ramtek (SC), Bhandara-Gondiya, Gadchiroli-Chimur (ST), Chandrapur and Yavatmal-Washim recorded voting percentage in excess of 60 per cent. Barring a failed attempt by Naxals to snatch Electronic Voting Machines

(EVM) in Gardewada village of Ettappali tehsil in Gadchiroli-Chimur (ST) constituency, the polling was peaceful. In 2009, the average polling percentage in these 10 constituencies was 56.07 percent. The slight increase in voter percentage this time around means that the verdict on May 16 could well go either way. For the BJP which was expecting a heavy polling percentage, the news of lower turnout does not augur well. Sources in the Election Continued on pg 9 «

am Aadmi Party's candidates for Mumbai, Medha Patkar, Phiroze Palkhivala, Meera Sanyal, Satish Jain, Mayank Gandhi, Sundar Balakrishnan released their manifesto at the Press Club on Thursday. They spoke of infrastructural reforms in great detail and elaborated on the citizencentric philosophy of their party. Patkar expressed her hope to create a “slum-free city, which will function on sustainable development.” She also spoke of putting an end to water smuggling, as the AAP has done in Delhi and beginning a dialogue on waste management–which she criticised the ruling party of ignoring. The manifesto includes increasing train compartments to prevent overcrowding on local trains and advocates the use of renewable energy sources in each household. Sanyal spoke of how this is the people's “last opportunity to reclaim

oes being diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease (PD) mean living a life that lacks quality and independence? No. With willpower and the urge to lead a happy life, PD does not have to be a hurdle in the way of leading a good life. And Shail Pandey, a 65-year-old grandmother, is a living example of this fact. Shail, who has been living with PD for the past sixteen years, is as independent as the rest of us. Looking at Shail would not give anybody the idea that she is a PD patient. Her well-maintained brightly painted nails, well-kept hair and cute dressing sense makes her as adorable as any grandmother. It's only when she speaks that her slur gives up her condition. But she couldn't care less because she loves talking. Cooking and reading magazines are also activities that she enjoys. But painting is her ultimate passion. It is a means of getting away from pain and symptoms of PD. “When I paint, I forget everything. It not only keeps me busy but makes me feel special. I love the colours and designs,” said Shail, the walls of whose two-bedroom-hall-kitchen flat at Wadala is decorated with her own paintings. Shail who was diagnosed with

PDMDS is a first-of-its-kind community care-based model with the aim to improve care and treatment of people living with Parkinson’s and its spectrum disorders, to disseminate knowledge amongst the medical community, public, patients and caretakers. The PDMDS was founded in 2005 by Dr. B.S Singhal a well-known neurologist in the city. With 12 centres across the city, it has around 1,000 patients under its care.

Prevalence of PD: Speaking numbers, Dr. Maria Barretto, CEO, PDMDS said, “Globally, one per cent of all the people above the age of sixty have PD. In India, there are more than nine crore people above the age of 65 so more than nine lakh people have PD in India.” Going by the global average, when around seven per cent of Maharashtra's population of 11.23 crore are senior citizens (around 78 lakhs), then 78,000 people in the state have PD. “Every year we add around 100 to 150 new people to our groups. Doctors too refer patients to us as they have realised that along with medical help, these people need support and care. Previously, the referrals used to be 10 per cent of our new entrants. But now, with an increase in awareness, 60 per cent of new cases are referrals from doctors and the remaining 40 per cent are referrals from patients themselves and the spread of word through our awareness programs,” said Dr. Barretto.

old Anju Shroff who couldn’t stop gushing about the trip once she landed. “We sang and danced, even played games and had lots of fun throughout the trip”, she said. The idea of organising an evening on the sea for seniors was primarily Kishore Kuvavala’s brainchild. “I, with a few of Laughter Club members, approached morning walkers here in South Mumbai to get them to come with us and enjoy an evening on the sea”, he recalled talking about how it all began. Then, Kuvavala approached Shipping Minster Milind Deora who got the necessary permissions for the cruise cleared.

This cruise was, incidentally, the seventh in a row of similar events organised for the senior citizens. “It was on November 24 last year when we went on the first trip with 80-90 senior citizens. It was a colossal hit back then. Everyone enjoyed immensely and we were keen on repeating it over and over again. The idea was to include a different set of seniors with each trip so that more and more seniors can partake in the joys of a field trip at sea”, Kuvavala said. The event primarily for senior citizens had been organised with extreme care. Every precaution was taken by the JNPT, which ensured

that a medical staff stayed on board throughout the trip and the cruise itself remained fully equipped with crisis medication at all times, should there be an emergency. Why, there was an oxygen cylinder too on the cruise. Among the seniors were 85-yearold Vasudev Acharaya and 82-yearold Shushila Chawla, the oldest yet the most spirited of the lot. And, there was an Indian-American retired psychiatrist, Cham Rao, in the city on a vacation who participated too. gajanan@draftcraft.in

that the film has no similarity to the case and has sought a stay on its release till their appeal is heard and decided by the Allahabad High Court. This was informed to the court by advocate Anushak Davar, representing Talwars to the division bench of Justice V.M. Kanade and Justice A.K. Menon that there are glaring similarities between the movie’s story and the Aarushi case. “The censor board has only spoken about the dissimilarities between the two. But there are over 100 similarities which they have not bothered to put on affidavit. Except for a few scenes in the end of the movie, the story is the same as the murder incident of Aarushi. So we seek a

stay on the release of the movie pending our hearing of the appeal before the Allahabad High Court. The appeal and their bail plea is posted for hearing on April 17. We are not seeking a complete ban on the movie’s release but only till the appeal is heard and decided”, the lawyer told the bench. Based on this, the bench has posted the petition for further hearing on April 17. Aarushi and their house help Hemraj were found murdered at the Talwars' residence in Noida in 2008. A sessions court convicted the dentist couple for their daughter's murder. The Talwars' appeal is pending before the Delhi High Court. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

fter last year's Uttarakhad disaster, Umakant Panwar, Secretary of Tourism with the Government of Uttarakhand on Thursday announced that they were open for business on schedule this year. “Uttarakhand is ready to welcome you, especially the 'Chardhaam Yatra'. Yamunotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath and Hemkund officially open on May 2, 3, 4 and 25 respectively”, he said at a press conference organised by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board. In a previous statement, Vijay Bahuguna, Uttarakhand Chief Minister had admitted that the floods of 2013 had set them back by three years. Panwar had added that the setback was also in terms of the undue negative publicity it had garnered. “Only 20 per cent of the state was actually hit by floods. The damages were mostly confined to the Kedarnath valley, which have been tended to now, the Board assured us. Although the length of the trek will be the same, the trek will be slightly more difficult now. There will be halts at Bhimtal, Gaurikund and Himchuli with overnight boarding. Panwar admitted that one of the reasons why last year's disaster took so many lives was because of overcrowding. The main concern now is matching the load carrying capacity with the influx. “We have put a limit on that.

Places like Kedarnath can only have 500 people staying overnight”. Dehradun now has seven flights moving in and out every day which has further connectivity through helicopters. Around 29 helipads are being constructed. The government has also announced some tax relief to kick-start the economy mainly from the business operators' point of view. VAT has taken a plunge from 13.5 to 14 per cent. Local transport has been provided tax relief for two years. Panwar also added that the Biometric Registration System, which will operate on the lines of the Aadhaar card, will take account of the user's

number of visitors. Certain value-added services have also been promised to be introduced by June-July this year. These will include proposing a particular application that will sense the user's location, give hourly traffic and weather forecasts etc. Not many difficult questions were asked as the Board seemed pretty confident about their figures and had pictures to show the improvement even in the worsthit areas. “There is a strong sense of resilience and revival. We will build it back finger print, phone numbers better and even more beautiand other details to keep a ful”, said Panwar in his bid to track of who is going where. restore and build public conIt will also give an idea of the fidence.

The city has been categorised into seven zones for pothole repairs. S.V.R. Ponder awhile… “Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.” – Robert Louis Stevenson

A large number of criminals in Lok Sabha poll fray I

t is estimated that half the number of candidates who are contesting in the Lok Sabha elections are criminals. They are involved in crimes like murder, extortion, rape and assault. In one poll segment, the number of candidates with criminal charges against them is as much as 70 per cent. It is being said that democracy has been firmly established in our country and all citizens have equal rights. The pertinent question is whether a person who has killed or raped must also be given a chance to sit in the Lok Sabha. There has been angry voices against the practice of giving tickets to criminals, but nothing has changed, most of the members of parliament are themselves against putting any ban on participation of criminals in Lok Sabha elections. The court itself has taken note of the disturbing situation and has at last said that those MPs charged with crime and convicted should not sit in the House. Following this verdict by the court, Laloo Prasad Yadav had to make his exit from the Lok Sabha. All party leaders however do not want any ban to be put on criminals even if charges are framed against them. It looks like these criminals have a lot of muscle and money power which helps in winning elections. The criterion appears to be the extent of capacity of a candidate to enlist voter support. The poll managers want results. They do not bother how the criminals get support of people. In some regions, it is a fact that criminals are very popular. They have money power which attracts voters. Muscle power – force – also works. No wonder the repeated attempts by activists and some clean politicians to keep elections out of the reach of criminals have not succeeded. What is a matter for concern is that in this Lok Sabha elections, a large number of criminals might be elected. Since all political parties are totally against imposing a ban, there is little chance of ever having a clean Lok Sabha.

T

he late Khushwant Singh who passed away on March 20 received due recognition in the English media such as no other in his profession has ever received in the past. 'The Telegraph' (March 21) noted that he was its “oldest columnist” right from the year of its birth. It said: “His sense of mischief and his playfulness often deflected attention from the more serious side of India's most famous sardarji. His outward iconoclasm notwithstanding he remained immersed in the more profound and philosophical traditions of the religion of his forefathers... the jokes he cracked, often aimed at the Sikhs, will not live after him, but his books will.” Noting that “he could have been a victim of the anti-Sikh pogrom of 1985 but was saved by friends” the paper said that “his self-fashioned cynicism and cultivated malice had not allowed the iron to enter his soul” and “the imp in him never grew old till God's clock struck twelve.”

Shobha De in language and style that the Sardar would have adored. Bedi thought that the Sardar's 'A History of the Sikhs' “is a book that would be difficult to surpass for its amazing depth and prodigious understanding by future generations.” Bedi also praised 'A Train To Pakistan' as a harrowing account in English of a British-ordered slapdash sundering that separated a closeknit people and turned them into savage beasts.” Bedi concluded by saying that “the Sardar's story is India's story”. Kishwar Desai was even more laudatory. She said that “for many of us writers and journalists he was an amazing mentor and he wore his achievements very lightly, ever happy to just shoot the breeze with us. “Kishwar,” said Mr. Singh, “always had good advice to give and was never judgmental.” She re-

Wishing him well, wherever he is 'Deccan Herald', (March 22) in the south said Khushwant Singh “had all the contradictions of human beings.” It said, “He wrote history dispassionately but infused passion and imagination in its retelling in fiction. He was a champion of freedom and liberal values but supported their suppression once in his life. He held strong views but was never afraid to change them. He was an agnostic but held religious literature in high esteem. He claimed he had malice towards one and all but was never malicious in the vile way. Even those whom he scorned loved reading him. He boasted and exaggerated but was also humble and real about himself.” 'Business Line' (March 21) carried a rich tribute to Singh by Urvashi Butalia, editor, publisher and director of Zubaan. She referred to several books Singh had written starting with the two-volume history of Sikhs, maintaining that “written with a journalist's pen and a historian's eye this is a history that does any bookshelf it graced, proud”. “Perhaps” wrote Butalia, “the most fitting tribute to this giant of the journalistic and literary world in India would be to raise a glass to him and wish him well wherever he is now.” 'The Economic Times' (March 21) devoted almost an entire page to eulogise Mr. Singh. It carried three articles one by Rakesh Bedi, another by Kishwar Desai and a third by

Summarising Khushwant's life in all its manifold ways, De said “behind the facade of a drunken profligate, a reckless philanderer...was a diligent wordsmith who never skipped a deadline, a disciplined writer who put pen to paper every single day, a voracious reader with an insatiable appetite for knowledge, an incurable romantic who could recite exquisite Urdu verse...” 'The Times of India' (March 21) carried a glowing tribute to Mr. Singh by one of his early staffers, Bachi Karkaria. ome people, men and women, were inspired to give up all possessions and become monks and nuns. Others were unable to go that far but followed Mahavira's teachings without giving up their homes and families and work. Mahavira taught a scientific explanation of the nature and meaning of life and a guide as to how we should behave to draw this real nature and meaning into our own life. We must start with three things. First, we must have RIGHT FAITH , we must believe in truth. Second, we must have the RIGHT KNOWLEDGE, we must study to understand what life is all about. Third, we must follow RIGHT CONDUCT, the conduct which our faith and knowledge show us to be correct. These are the 'three jewels', ratnatraya, of Jainism. RIGHT FAITH is perhaps the hardest of all. Nobody can tell us what we can believe, but we can look at the message of Mahavira and believe that he really did know what he was

talking about and that his message makes sense. Mahavira's message contains the basis of RIGHT KNOWLEDGE. Life is a puzzle. Where did we come from before birth? Where do we go after death? Nobody's life is completely and totally happy, but why do some people have lives of great misery and others have much joy? Mahavira teaches us that this is not the result of the whims of some distant god. No, each one of us is what we have made our-

MATTER & SPIRIT selves by our actions in this life and in previous lives. Every individual (and not only humans, but animals and plants) is basically a pure spirit or soul (jiva is the Jain word for it) which is capable of complete knowledge and complete freedom. But by our actions and thoughts we have, as it were, covered this pure spirit with the gross material of karma which obscures our knowledge and limits our

and “a battalion of long dead men sharpening their sabres to attack the dastardly fellow who wrote such nasty obituaries.” “Death itself,” Karkaria wrote, “might be in a quandary, not knowing whether to hang its head in shame or smile in benign satisfaction. And yet,” she added “in all these things there is a contradiction.” Praising him for standing by trainees, Karkaria said Khushwant “most typically exposed gasbags and self-styled godmen” and “the more sacred a cow, the more gleefully he slaughtered it.” She who worked for Singh praised him as “one of India's most-acclaimed novelists, a world authority on Sikhs, an encyclopedia on trees and birds and the most successful editor of his times.”

The king of journalism M.J. Akbar also writing for the same paper, said Khushwant was never a journalist's journalist, but was “an author's journalist. He brought the narrative sweep of an artistic temperament to periodical writing.” Continuing, he said, “If fiction is about contemporary life then journalism is about temporary realities. Khushwant Singh traversed the distance without a hiccup because he laughed at the thought of being trapped in any ivory tower...he preferred ideas to any ideology. He was, in a sense, profoundly non-ideological. He thought the Left which was the intellectual fashion of the age, was inherently antagonistic to individual liberty which he prized above everything else, because of its doctrinaire traps. He saw doctrine as a casket, fit for a graveyard.” And then we have Gargi Gupta who practically summed up Khushwant's entire life by saying: “To national debate he brought in a robust contrarian view, which will be missed. Secular to the core, a non-believer to the depth of his heart, he was often ahead of his times. In an age when religious fundamentalism seemed a threat he was a beacon of hope. It is that beacon that has dimmed for ever.” To sum it all up, wrote Vikram Seth: “One feels he is still around”. David Davidar said something more, “When they made him, they broke the mould and I am sure I will never meet his like again...he will be sorely missed.” And to that one might add another tribute, this one from Geeta Doctor, who, writing in The Hindu said, “In the once and forever glory days of journalism there will only be one king and that man is now dead.” freedom and ties us down to one life after another. Although we may have a lot of happiness in life we also, all of us, have a great deal of unhappiness. We want to know the way in which we can get rid of the restrictions of karma and gain the state of complete knowledge and glorious freedom which is known as moksa or nirvana. Although this may be a very long, very slow process for most of us, over countless lives, Mahavira teaches us how to make a start in freeing ourselves from the restrictions and miseries of karma. So we come to RIGHT CONDUCT. Strength of passions is the worst thing, passions of violence and desire and possession. The most important principle which runs through the whole of Mahavira's attitude of life is ahimsa. This is usually translated as 'non-violence', but it goes beyond that and really means the greatest possible kindness to all living things. This is the first and fundamental rule which we should try to follow, to get rid of violence in all our actions and even in our thoughts. Yes, in our thoughts as well, for violent thoughts can be potentially as harmful as violent deeds. – Mahavira

Was the slap stage-managed? ARVIND Kejriwal was slapped yet again and this time by his own supporter, which gives rise to suspicion that the whole thing could be stage managed for garnering sympathy just a couple of days before elections in Delhi. Also Kejriwal meets the person who slapped him under camera glare and every ill will is forgotten. While all forms of violence needs to be condemned in the strongest possible ways, politicians too should not dramatise events for publicity. People have high hopes on Arvind because they identify him as being noncorrupt and honest. But people expect governance from elected leaders and Kejriwal let down his followers by giving up power in Delhi only to concentrate on the national elections. Accountability to voters is the key and one hopes that Kejriwal would not commit the Delhi mistake of running away from power ever again. People today feel saddened and let down which is the reason for Kejriwal's declining popularity after he became a hero overnight. Our country though needs honest politicians like Kejriwal and thus one hopes that he is given another chance by the voters to prove his loyalty to them.

TACTICS? Kejriwal has been slapped by an aam aadmi yet again, in complete public view during one of his rallies.

ON one hand, Rahul Gandhi alleges that BJP ‘divides’ the nationals into Hindus and Muslims. But shockingly, Congress’ probable post election ally party SP’s Azam Khan says that the Kargil war was won because of the Muslim jawans, and not Hindu jawans. People may hope that Congress will be sufficiently cautious in the matter of joining its ‘hand’ with such divisive party, SP any time in future, just for the ‘chair.’ Rahul also seems to have forgotten conveniently that his own grandma and former Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi had started to divide Indians into Hindus and Muslims, obviously for ‘chair’ since 1969, continued by Sonia and Rahul Gandhi till date, followed by Congress’ similar vote greedy allies like NCP, RJD, SP, BSP and few other parties. Mulayam under fire for rape remarks N

EW DELHI: SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Thursday drew flak from political parties and women and social activists for questioning capital punishment to rapists and saying “boys commit mistakes” for which they should not be hanged. Hours after his highly controversial comments, Congress slammed Yadav saying these were ‘unfortunate’. “It is unfortunate that any leader makes such a statement regarding a crime like rape. Such statements encourage persons involved in such crimes,” Congress spokesperson Shobha Oza told PTI. BJP leader Subramanian Swamy said the comment smacked of Yadav playing ‘minority politics’ in the backdrop of recent Muzaffarnagar riots in which many women were allegedly raped. “Mulayam Singh Yadav must have thought of playing minority politics in Nirbhaya case also,” he said, adding there was no law which provides for death sentence to juveniles and under the Juvenile Act, they are released in three years for these offences. rally in Moradabad, Yadav had also said that after the Nirbhaya incident, people have started to get worried. Social activist Kiran Bedi said, “These statements call for total boycott of such a political leader. People should be asked to vote out such people completely.” “That is exactly the reason when such people in power do not deliver and society as a whole feels insecure. This statement is against the society and it is spreading lawlessness,” she said. Noted activist on women issues Ranjana Kumari demanded Yadav’s arrest in the light of these remarks. “Women of the country should not vote for his party whether it is in UP or somewhere else and he should be boycotted as a politician because he not only made these comments but also worked to stop women’s reservation bill,” she said. She said the EC should take cognisance of it and an FIR must be lodged against him for making such a statement as “calling rape a small mistake is directly encouraging rape.”

Tune in!

With online streaming options, premier channels on our set top boxes and new shows that air in tune with the rest of the world, this is turning out to be quite the year for a couch potato in India. If you want to spend the weekend curled up with a good show to watch but don’t know where to start, the 48Hours Team helps out with some great options and tell you what shows you should be watching

The besT shows on TV Since you don't have to wait for seasons to change and shows to get cancelled before they air on Indian television any more, take a look at some of the shows that you can now watch at almost the same time as the rest of the world. And don't worry — we're not giving out any spoilers, so even if you haven't watched them from the beginning, it's not too late to start!

>> Modern Family is a mustModern Family: This watch comedy show has swept up Golden Globes and Emmy's for years, for good reason. If you're tired of waiting for seasons to end before you can watch this dysfunctional family at its comic best, our options on the next page will help you out. With a sexy Sofia Vergara as a linguistically challenged stepmum and Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell and Eric Stonestreet adding comic effect, this mocumentary is one to watch. Big Bang Theory: If you don't already know about The Big Bang Theory, we suggest you get watching, as soon as possible. The show follows the lives of some very geeky scientists and an extremely good looking neighbour. Find out what everyone's favourite quirky genius — Sheldon (Jim Parsons in a stellar performance) has up his sleeve and watch the rest of the cast in a series of antics. Two and a Half Men: If you're still watching Two and a Half Men with Charlie Sheen, you're not really in tune with the times. Now starring Ashton Kutcher, the show is still a hoot, although critics have had mixed opinions. Find out for yourself by catching the latest episodes.

American Idol: Fans of the singing show will be pleased to find out that one of America's first singing competitions is now being aired almost in tune with the US air dates. Now in it's 13th season and with Harry Connick Jr., Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez as judges, watch Ryan Seacrest deliver his witty comments while the contestants fight to become the best singer in America. The Voice: If you're tired of American Idol and prefer a format where the voice is all that really matters, this aptly titled show is for you. With Shakira, Maroon 5's Adam Levine, country star Blake Shelton and Usher as the judges

along with host Carson Daily, this show — with its blind auditions, knockout rounds and superstar guest appearances is easy to find on Indian television.

>> You can watch The Voice on AXN

Suits: What do you get when you team someone with an eidetic memory with the ‘best closer in New York City’? A show that's full of lawyers, corruption, Harvard references and, well... a lot of suits, as the title suggests. This drama, filled with witty one-liners and its fare share of tearjerking scenes, is currently in its third season and you can finally watch it on Indian television. Veep: We all know that the political systems in any country are far from perfect. But, an inept Vice President (VP, where Veep comes from) in the form of a brilliantly comic JuliaLouis Dreyfus (of Seinfield stardom) and an invisible, but continued on pg 14 «

Air Crash Investigation: Also known as Mayday, Air Emergency and Air Disasters (depending on what country is airing it) this documentary programme is about — you guessed it — air crashes, hijackings, bombings and other disasters. Don't watch this if you need a pick-me-up, but it's an interesting, informative show to catch. Mega Factories: This is also known as Ultimate Factories and since its a National Geographic show, it's very easy to catch on television. Watch behind-the-scenes footage of factories, machinery and manpower.

oh-So dramatiC

House of Cards: This White House drama combines conspiracy, corruption and Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright playing the strangest power couple you've ever seen. This show beats

everything else out of the water. Game of Thrones: Blood, gore and a lot of fantasy — the Song of Ice and Fire books were always popular, so when HBO decided to make them into a hard-hitting, fast-paced television show where no one is safe, it’s no surprise it became a show you cannot skip watching. Revenge: American primetime television loves this show and if you're the sort of person who likes a heady dose of family drama (think of it as an English version of a saas-bahu show) with a good dose of revenge thrown in, 27-year-old Emily VanCamp will thrill you through her journey to avenge her wrongfully jailed and subsequently killed father.

NoN-premium fuN

True Detective: Technically, since this show just about wrapped up, we shouldn't be putting it on a list of currently airing shows. However, the American crime drama show, starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as two of the best homicide detectives on television is worth watching if you haven't already. So, use your weekend to binge-watch all 8 episodes of the show. White Collar: We love, love, love Neal Caffrey (Matt Bomer) and after you watch this show, you will too. The conartist who works mostly for the good guys is a great watch. Castle: A writer, a detective, a few laughs and a lot of bad guys is what makes Castle an entertaining show.

It's not just premium channels that will give you access to all the latest TV shows. Other TV channels too have a number of new shows on air. While there might not be several options, something is better than nothing. Check them out: aXN: The Voice is one of the best reality singing shows out there and AXN ensures that Indian audiences don’t miss out on the fun. The episodes are broadcast on the first weekend after they are aired in the USA. Comedy Central: The concept of a channel devoted to comedy is a great one, but the programming hasn’t been the best. However, they have been responsible for bringing the comicdrama Suits to India. In the past they have done it a few weeks after the series’ finale in the US and with the second-half of the third season on air in the US right now, it shouldn’t be long before the channel brings the show back to our screens. Zee Cafe: Zee Cafe is our favourite from the non-premium channels. They currently have the latest episodes of shows such as The Big Bang Theory (pictured) and American Idol that are a few days after they do in the USA. The channel was also the first one to bring Netflix's successful show House of Cards to Indian telly sets.

gettiNg aNimated

Simpsons: One of the longest running animated shows in history, the Simpsons seem like they're not giving up on air time any time soon. Watch Homer, Marge, Maggie, Lisa and Bart up to their usual antics in Springfield — on your television or by streaming it online.

If you've heard of Netflix, understanding BoxTV will become simpler. It is a website where, for a subscription fee (they also have some films for free), you can get access to English and Hindi films as well as TV shows. When it comes to English TV shows, the website is more of a documentary lover's paradise, but they also have a few popular shows. The best part is that you'll have access to all the previous episodes and seasons, which allows you to binge-watch. The only drawback is that you'll need an unlimited internet plan with very good bandwidth. As far as the subscription rates go, they have a large variety of offers — trial plans of `20, `49, `99 and `150 for one day, three days, a week and a fortnight respectively, as well as subscriptions for `199, `499, `799 and `1,499 for a month, three months, half a year and a year. what they have on offer: Scrubs, Lost, Grey's Anatomy, The Tudors, Desperate Housewives, Banged Up Abroad, Air Crash Investigation, Mega Factories, Mega Structures.

ction Breaks Silence, founded by UK-based Debi Stevens, is a not for profit company working to help underprivileged girls and women. In association with the NGO Vidya, they will be conducting two workshops in the city on personal safety and self-defence, designed to better equip girls to protect and ultimately empower themselves in their daily lives. This workshop will be led by a highly trained team of men and women from the UK, assisted by trainee self-defence instructors from CSK Kalari from Bangalore, Marari Beach Resort from Kerala and The Red Brigade from Lucknow. The workshops are aimed at underprivileged teenage girls who are concerned about their welfare and safety and will provide them with practical solutions to address these fears. The workshop is open to all for a minimal fee. Physical self-defence skills will be taught in realistic scenarios, providing the girls with useful techniques as well as a sense of empowerment. These workshops will be conducted at two municipal schools in Mumbai. Debi tells us, “So far, Action Breaks Silence has taught over 5,000 girls and women in India for free. To make this sustainable, we are also training local instructors. issing flight MH370 has generated lots of attention and even stirred up some conspiracy theories. However, Discovery — the channel known for its investigative documentaries — is aiming to sort through the melee and will explore some of the key questions surrounding the disappearance of the jet. The hour-long documentary will turn to industry experts to understand the evidence, accounting for how it is possible to lose an airliner and come up with possible solutions to prevent something like this from happening again. Flight 370: The Missing Links will focus on seven links: airport security, air traffic control, on-board communication systems, mechanical failures, tracking, international cooperation and the black box. Talking about the show, Tom Gorham, executive producer for Discovery Networks International, says, “The mystery of flight MH370 serves as a tragic reminder that technology is indeed fallible. With the help of seasoned aviation, tracking and satellite industry experts, Flight 370: The Missing Links explores the events which have unfolded, focusing on just how this could have happened, and examining the inherent flaws in the eco-system of modern international travel.” When April 21, 9pm Where Discovery Channel

« store review: sukho thai’s suMMer scrub anD fenny g & frienDs

Mango Mania >> From the comfy chair and dim lighting, to the relaxing music in the background, the ambiance at Sukho Thai adds to the experience

M

arch madness and heatrelated tantrums usually define my summer, so finding a way to relax is at the top of

my agenda. Understandably, this is the best time to visit a spa, especially when the spa in question is Bandra's foot spa champion, Sukho Thai. Not

Mango Therapy (70-minutes if you're running short on time, though I suggest you get the full experience) — their seasonal scrub offering for the summer. But, I was speculative about how much value-for-money I'd be getting, with the treatment’s `2,790 price tag. Sukho Thai has never been cheap, but when you say mango scrub and that amount together, you tend to choke up a little. The one issue I usually have at spas that have the open-chair format of Sukho Thai rather than exclusive rooms, is that as good as your therapy may be, boorish customers can ruin it for you, which is something the spa can do very little to control. As luck would have it, I was treated to some loud noises, a few cellphone pings and some incessant chatter from the back rooms, but thankfully, the disturbances passed and I could settle in for the treatment, which may not have exceeded, but definitely matched expectations. The scrub in question includes 30 minutes of exfoliation, with a scrub that smelt only very faintly of mango — and more like a mango sweet than fresh mangoes. Barring a few extremely ticklish moments near my toes and the occasional lack of water (but not enough to chaff my skin) the scrub was well applied, leaving my legs feeling soft and fresh. This was usually one to disappoint, I wasn't followed by one of the best foot particularly worried about the massages I've had the pleasure of quality of treatment when I visited to experiencing, keeping in tune with try the pampering, 90-minute Sukho Thai's reputation. Sukho Thai’s new mango therapy will leave your skin surprisingly soft. But, is it just a glorified exfoliation treatment or is it really worth heading over to the spa for? Rhea Dhanbhoora finds out

estled in one corner of a quiet lane in Andheri, sits Fenny G & Friends, a unique lifestyle store. From products such as distinctive dinner sets to card holders that are anything but run-off-the-mill, it has everything in store, literally. Another thing that sets this store apart, is that the alternative retail space morphs into The Little Door, your friendly neighbourhood Mediterranean bar, that transforms into an airy café during the day. Fenny G & Friends at The Little Door is a fluid, well-curated space, with never-seen before décor, uber fashion and exciting gourmet food, all blended together into a bundle of memorable experiences. As you walk into the store at The Little Door, you expect to be greeted by music and a large crowd, but instead you meet serene calmness and a relaxing vibe. Fenny Ganatra, also known as Fenny G, has travelled around the world to promote her début product, Bounce — a new age chair with a comfortable seating experience. On her travels, she came across innovative products that were on par with her design principles.

the traditional 15 minutes devoted to your back and neck and you're left cooler, calmer and much more relaxed than when you walked in. Service at the spa is great, the therapists are warm and friendly and they will ensure that you're comfortably reclining in the big armchairs before your therapy begins. They also give you enough time to enjoy the delicious tea and bowl of fruits that you’re served after it’s done. Cooling scrubs and massages are very often cooling only when you're at the spa. But, as I stepped out onto the sultry roads, my legs were not only ridiculously soft (the softness as well as the glow lasted for three days, which left me very impressed), they were also incredibly cool. The massage oil left a peppermint fresh feeling on my legs, so much so that they remained oblivious to the pollution as well as the summer heat. It's safe to say that Sukho Thai left my skin relaxed, smooth and glowing for days, so I was more than a little satisfied. A little more mango in the scrub that would have left a heady mango scent lingering on my skin would have made this treatment more worthy. The price tag will still leave you wondering whether to opt for the treatment or not, so it won’t become your go-to summer massage. But, if you want to treat yourself to a guilty indulgence, this is the place you should visit. Where Sukho Thai, Turner Road, Bandra (W) Contact www.sukhothai.in

estled in Bandra-Kurla Complex, Café Infinito houses a small outdoor eating section as well as a much larger indoor area, replete with a bar, a projector and spaced out seating. As we settled into our booth, the warm lighting and cosy wooden seating (always a plus point) did a good job of making the space feel more leisurely in comparison to many other restaurants that urge you to eat and leave in a hurry. We started off with a Chocolate Coffee Frappe (`200) and a Monsoon Malabar Mild Coffee (`150). Both the beverages were delicious. For starters, we tried the Basil Gnocchi with Harrisa Fondue (`275), the Jalapeno and Cheese Poppers (`200) and the Balti Spiced Chicken Skewers with Homemade Aioli (`300). The gnocchi was excellent and the harissa spiked fondue accompanied it well. The jalapeno and cheese poppers were great too, as they were the right consistency and had just the right amount of spice — enough to make you want to reach out for another one, but not spicy enough to

make your eyes water. However, the balti spiced chicken skewers were just average, as no particular flavour stood out to make it a memorable dish. We also tried the Chorizo Ravioli with Honey & Chilli emulsion and Aubergine Capanota (`250), as well as the Stuffed Chilli with Mozzarella, Parmesan & Lime Rind (`175). Although they used pepperoni slices instead of chorizo, the ricotta cheese stuffing (the pepperoni slice is the casing) and pepperoni were a great combination. Minimally spiced with a herb and honey drizzle, this was the appetiser we polished off the fastest. But, the aubergine capanota was missing! The stuffed chillies however, aren't for the faint-hearted. They pack a solid punch and even though they are stuffed with cheese, the spice quotient isn't mellow. We also tried the Downtowner Pizza (`650), which came loaded with pepperoni, chicken sausages, mushrooms and onions. The crust seemed a little soggy, but the filling more than made up for it. The tomato base (something I find that very few places get right) was just right — neither too sour, nor too sweet. Since we had enjoyed the basil gnocchi starter so much, we couldn't help but order the Homemade Patata Gnocchi with Lamb Ragout (`475). However, this one was a let down. The lamb ragout was just about average but the preparation fell flat, largely because of the lack of textures, making it a rather pasty dish. For dessert we tried the Tres Lesches (`225) and the Crème Brûlée (`225). The coconut based Tres Lesches was delicious, moist and creamy. The only gripe we had with it was that it was a tad too sweet. The crème brûlée on the other hand was perfect. Right from the consistency to the sweetness, there was nothing we could find fault with. Packed with vanilla seeds and accompanied by an equally delicious almond biscotti, we devoured spoon after spoon even though we were absolutely stuffed! If you haven't already gotten the drift, Café Infinito is definitely worth visiting, both for the food and the ambience. With pricing that is affordable and justifies the quality of food, Café Infinito is a great option if you're looking to eat out.

Radhika R. samples Olive’s new menu and tells you whether the food is as finely flavoured as promised

alking into The Olive Bar & Kitchen makes you feel like nothing has changed. Over the years, Olive has blossomed into more than a restaurant and is a melting pot where life imitates art and often, the other way around. Displaying a gastronomic pedigree, The Olive Bar & Kitchen dazzles its patrons with fresh, local ingredients, skillfully cooked in the new Mediterranean style. Olive recently launched its new, luxurious set menu, conjured up by Chef Sujan S. The friendly, talented chef is not only proud of his recipes but has much to say about each ingredient he uses while cooking the dish. His food philosophy stems from a childhood that was deeply entrenched in the love of food with fresh, seasonal produce from mushrooms in the winter to honey in the summer, a variety of poultry and hand churned butter available in his backyard. The set menu assures not to disappoint. It is loaded with gourmet ingredients such as romanesco and kumquat jam. The soups and salads have excellent vegetarian options such as the Roasted Pumpkin & Green Beans (`450) and Marinated Beetroot salad (`450). We were pleased to find that pumpkin and beetroot could be flavoured to suit our tastes. Another preparation that stood out was the Gazpacho Salad (`400). This is a fresh tomato salad, made with six different types of tomatoes and topped with chilled Gazpacho soup. The frozen mozzarella is the star ingredient and melts on your tongue. For non-vegetarians, the Tuna Nicoise (`600) is an excellent salad, made with locally sourced quail eggs and seared tuna. Skip the small plate starters and pizzas as they

bring nothing new to the table. But, jump straight to the meals and you are bound to get your appetite back. Once again, there were plenty of options for vegetarians. Fettucini Primavera (`650) made with handmade fettucini, pesto, seasonal vegetables and pine nuts makes for a light summer dish. For meat lovers, the Slow Cooked Pork Belly (`1,050) is a must-have. The pork belly is marinated for 24-hours and roasted for six hours to get perfectly crispy skin. The Pan Seared Sea Bass (`1,550), served with a shrimp oil infused butter and a locally sourced romanesco was also delicious. To end our meal on a sweet note, the chef brought us the Warm Banana & Walnut Cake (`400) and the Tiramisu (`400). The wholesome meal left us with a smile on our face.

WhAt’s Cooking? B’lue launches a new flavour

Popular non-alcoholic beverage, B’lue, has introduced a brand new flavour. The Zesty Orange Lime is now a part of their lineup, which already includes Green Apple, Peach and Guava. We tried the new drink and while we were excited about, it disappoints slightly. We felt that it was a bit on the sweeter side and tasted too much like a popular childhood drink. That being said, it certainly refreshes you and is a good alternative to fizzy drinks on hot days when plain water just won’t do. priCe `32 Where Retail stores across the city

MUMBAI MUMBAI | FRIDAY, | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER APRIL 11, 03, 2014 2010

Getting there Any of the numerous overnight buses from Delhi to Manali will take you to Bhuntar, the last major stop before Kasol, for approximately `1,000. From there, a taxi ride (approximately `1,200) or one of the frequently-plying, well-maintained local buses (`20) will get you to Kasol in a little over an hour.

Parvati’s song K

asol is the most notorious of all settlements in Parvati Valley, something that owes far more to the beauty of the towering hills that encircle it (some snow-clad, some pine-green) and the marvellous River Parvati that flows through it, than most people will credit them for. When we reached the taxi station in Kasol, we were greeted by signboards painted in English and Hebrew, advertising small cafés and hotels. They serve the standard dishes targeted at European tourists, such as bagels, waffles, Nutella pancakes and pasta, as well as several Israeli dishes, including the popular pita bread with hummus. The food is usually very good, but service can be abysmal. Kasol attracts the bulk of its visitors from April to September and many cafés remain closed during the winter. We visited in February, so tourists were few and far between and the scenery was more white than green, especially higher up the mountains. The thirty-minute walk from Kasol to a small village called Chalal, was our unexpected reward for the long hours of travel we had endured. We embarked on a casual hike over long, rickety bridges, through quiet, chilly woods of pine, with the Parvati roaring past... it was perfect. I couldn’t stop smiling as I passed horses grazing among the trees. We were privy to clear weather, which allowed us to fully appreciate our surroundings. The wild, rushing current made for a lovely soundtrack and

Stray from the tried and tested destinations in Himachal Pradesh and allow Parvati Valley to woo you with its splendid peaks, charming locals and majestic, river-worn valleys, says Rahul Sawn

accompanied us throughout, even when the trees hid the river from sight. Using your earphones on that walk would be a crime beyond punishment. Even if we hadn’t been stopping every two steps to take photographs, catching up with our smiling porters was impossible; strong and sure-footed that their lives in the mountains had made them. We were lucky enough to find a very likeable man (known as Guruji by some in Chalal) who agreed to lend us his brightly painted cottage for three days. If you’re on a budget and want a more rustic atmosphere during your stay, skip the hotels in Kasol and ask the locals for help with a homestay, or a basic guesthouse. But, even if you prefer to shell out for a room with the comforts of modern heating and room service, there’s no dearth of options. Charging up to `9,000 a room during peak season, the Himalayan Village offers the most luxurious experience and spectacular view in town. At approximately `2,500, Parvati Kuteer and Sandhya Guest House are great as more balanced options. Chalal is filled with tiny cottages and hospitable villagers. The many cafés here, including the Shiva Garden Café and Freedom Café, serve great Western and Indian dishes just like their Kasol counterparts and play Psytrance music all day. When you’re seated at one of these cafés, snowcapped mountains, coniferous forests, and tiny, terraced fields fill your view. Coupled with the omnipresent rumble of the river nearby, it creates a deeply satisfying ambience. The best parts of my day were spent walking around Chalal and down the rough trails to the rock-strewn, pebbled banks of the river. Sitting atop a large rock, feet dangling above water that rushed by just a few feet below, trying in vain to do justice to the marvelous panorama of green and white hills and the cloudy blue sky reflected in the river with my photographs… the experience was almost therapeutic. We moved on to Tosh, a picturesque little village of stilted huts and cottages on slopes overlooking the

Tosh Nallah, that flows through the valley before joining the Parvati River. It can be reached via road, after the snow clears up in March, but the more popular way to reach it is via a 2-hour trek of medium difficulty from Kasol. Kheer Ganga is a much harder, 6-7 hour affair, with the promise of high-altitude hotsprings and the best view in Parvati Valley at the end of it. The few accommodations available at the top are partial to foreigners, so be sure to book ahead. Our next stop was Barshaini, a small village that's an hour’s drive up bumpy ghats in a taxi from Kasol. We twisted in our seats throughout the journey for a better look at the white peaks surrounding us. We were on our way to Tosh, but the taxi driver was unwilling to continue beyond Barshaini, anticipating harsh weather and un-motorable roads. So, we left the taxi behind and walked towards Pulga Dam. It began to snow and we surrendered to the thrilled, childish wonder common among those unfamiliar with an experience like this. With the dreamy spread of whitewashed mountains and valleys before us and snowflakes swirling all around, it was hard to be disappointed. Parvati Valley will exceed your expectations, regardless of your preferences; its adventurous treks, delicious food, helpful locals, secret parties among the pines, lazy riverside walks, quaint villages and sheer, undeniable beauty all add up to make it an unbeatable experience.

>> Instead of staying at an expensive hotel, try to get in touch with locals for an affordable, beautiful homestay like this one near the Parvati river

It then turned into a range bound movement until 11.35 a.m. The index then rose sharply into the green and registered the day’s high at the 6819 points level at 11.57 a.m. It then declined and then turned into a range bound movement until 3.15 p.m. The market then declined sharply into the red and registered the day’s low at the 6777 points level at 3.29 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session and moved in a range of 42 points. Sentiment was mixed and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 23 were gainers, 26 were losers and 1 remained unchanged. Substantial buying was seen in power, capital goods and realty stocks, while selling was witnessed in healthcare, IT, technology, FMCG and consumer durables stocks.. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 20.05%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors. Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 885 were gainers, 677 were losers and 37 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is above the slow D line (positive if it continues).

RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level and is now turned flat (positive if it rises). MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market but with a neutral bias. Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 6446 points level. The next support is at the 6338 points level.

Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 6809 points level. The next resistance is at the 6874 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are:

Pivot point = 6798 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 6776. Support (2) = 6756. Resistance (1) = 6818. Resistance (2) = 6839. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a doji pattern. This indicates indecisiveness amongst investors. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the index is above its 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the four averages are rising and also positively trended. Further, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. Both these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a further up move unfolding. Investors are advised to hold long positions.

utual funds witnessed huge redemption of Rs 1.09 lakh crore by investors in March, making it the highest monthly outflow in three years. According to the data released by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) today, liquid or money market witnessed significant outflows, although income funds and non-gold ETFs (Exchange Traded Fund) saw some inflows. The net redemption of Rs 1,08,951 crore in the last month of FY14 is the highest monthly outflow since March 2011, when mutual funds had witnessed redemption to the tune of Rs 1.27 lakh crore. Market participants said the redemption was mainly on account of large investments being pulled out by banks in the last month of a financial year while preelections ouflow could also have been a reason. In terms of category, liquid or money market witnessed the highest outflow of Rs 1.17 lakh crore in March. Besides, equity fund saw outflow worth Rs 2,102 crore and Gold ETFs witnessed a pull out of Rs 149 crore. On the other hand, income fund saw investment to the tune of Rs 7,838 crore, while non-gold ETFs witnessed infusion valued at Rs 3,087 crore. This outflow has pulled down the average AUM (Asset Under Management) of the country's 44 fund houses to Rs 8.25 lakh crore at the end of March 31, 2014 from Rs 8.76 lakh crore in the previous threemonth period. Earlier, some mutual funds had come under scanner of the capital markets watchdog Sebi and industry's front-line regulator AMFI for allegedly window-dressing their fiscal-end assets base through illicit trade. MUMBAI | FRIDAY, APRIL 11, 2014

We know J. Brandon Hill from his noted roles in films like ‘Bunty aur Babli’, ‘Raaz 2’, ‘Dum Maaro Dum’, ‘Double Dhamaal’ and the soonto-be released ‘Yaariyan’ and ‘Gang of Ghosts’. Television has not eluded him. We remember his role as the evil Lt. Governor of Punjab Richard Williams in ‘Mohe Rang De’. His newest film ‘The Dark Secrets of Tonhi’ is about to release and he’s getting chatty about it. By Sandeep Hattangadi

Tell us about your role in 'The Dark Secrets of Tonhi'. I play the lead role in the film, Dr. Kenneth Joyce. He is an American doctor who works for a doctors without borders type of organization. He comes to Chhattisgarh, where kids are mysteriously dying, to find out why. What he discovers puts him in conflict with some of the locals. How was your experience shooting this film? It was great fun and interesting. We had a great unit. The director Henry Shiraz is a talented guy.

Tell us something about your forthcoming films. One is 'Gang of Ghosts', directed

by Satish Kaushik which just released and another is 'The Dark Secrets of Tonhi' releasing this Friday. Shortly after that, I don’t know the date of release, is 'Lokmanya', a Marathi film directed by Om Raut. I am presently shooting 'Phantom', directed by Kabir Khan and 'Vagator Mixer' directed by Suneil Anand.

Which roles have given you the most satisfaction? They all have in some way, as they taught me something about my new craft as a film actor. But to be honest I am still waiting for a really great character to play.

Tell us about your experiences in the Indian entertainment industry? It has been great. I was a theatre actor in New York and only started doing film here. The transition from stage to screen has been more challenging than the transition from New York to Bombay.

I have worked very hard on ‘Revolver Rani’: Sai Kabir a bit unusual, he said “We chose the title 'Revolver Rani' as it’s not only catchy but it also reflects the essence of the movie.” He grinned and continued, “We didn’t want to name the project keeping the core essence of the movie aside.” “The taste of movie goers has changed and they now want to watch subject-oriented movies, the credit for which should go to directors like Tighmanshu Dhulia, Anurag Kashyap and Anurag Basu as they have tried to uplift the standard of Hindi films. Earlier too there were legendary directors like Guru Dutt, Raj Kapoor, Bimal Roy, etc. who were known for their subjectoriented movies,” said Kabir . It was in the 80’s and 90’s where some loud and violent movies with very thin story lines were being made and the standard of the industry took a nosedive. But things are now coming on track and with this positive change more film makers are coming out with unique stories, bringing about a change for the By Rajesh V. Gaur & Suneel V. You have worked in television as well? What do you prefer, film or TV? To me a camera is a camera and where the pictures end up doesn’t affect my work. I have to say that playing the main villain in the television serial 'Mohe Rang De' for the entire length of the serial was fun because it was a bit like theatre. I

had the opportunity to work with the same people over a long period of time and so developed a rhythm and a shared style of working that can only come with time. Your favourite Hindi and Hollywood actors and directors? Let me say here that I have never acted in Hollywood or even have been there, so any directors I like, I do strictly as a fan. Some of my favorites are Steven Spielberg, Woody Allen and Spike Lee. I am sure there are others, but they have slipped my mind. As for Indian film makers (I say Indian because I have acted in Bengali, Marathi and Malayalam films as well) I like any director who is smart enough to work with me. Very succinctly put Brandon!

The 71-year-old has had a varied and impressive career in films, playing roles of a father seeking justice for son in 'Viruddh', teacher of a blinddeaf-mute girl in 'Black', a self-obsessed chef in 'Cheeni Kum', a man in love with a much younger girl in 'Nishabd' or a child suffering from progeria in 'Paa'. A few days ago, the internet was buzzing with this news which Kareena vehemently denies. Reacting sharply to the rumours, the actress says, “I haven’t signed any such film. I don’t even know who Suriya and Linguswamy are. I have no interest in acting in non-Hindi films whether it is down South or in Hollywood.” She goes on to say that she was even offered Bengali scripts by the late Rituparno Ghosh but she turned them down. Although she refutes any interest in doing item songs in any language, she has done a guest appearance dance number in the movie ‘Gabbar‘. However the young actress has put her foot down for nude scenes. She believes that even though wearing a bikini is bold it is done tastefully and aesthetically. She also defends the intimate scenes in ‘2 States’ by saying that the script required that level on intimacy onscreen, as they had to show a young and modern couple in love. She says that the movie has been shot in order to cater even to the family and conservative minded audiences. S

INGAPORE: Teen sensation P V Sindhu entered the quarter-finals with a victory in women's singles but it was young Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth, who created a flutter at the USD 300,000 Singapore Super Series, with a stunning win over world number 10 Tien Minh Nguyen of Vietnam here today. Another Indian youngster, Sai Praneeth B, also made the last eight stage by registering a straight-game win over Zi Liang Derek Wong of Singapore. The 18-year-old Sindhu, who won the Malaysia Open and Macau Open last year besides the prestigious World Championship bronze, prevailed over Japan's Shizuka Uchida 21-17 17-21 2116 in a women's singles match. The Indian will next take on World No. 3 Yihan Wang tomorrow. After three first-round exits in the All England, Swiss Open and India Super Series, Srikanth finally found his form back as he notched up an upset 18-21 21-15 21-8 win over the World Championships bronze medallist. Thailand Open champion, Srikanth, who was the finalist at the India Grand Prix Gold earlier this year, will next take on Hong Kong's Yun Hu in the quarterfinals tomorrow. The Indian has a 1-0 record against Hu, having beaten him at the Maybank Malaysia Open early in the season. World number 50 Sai Praneeth gave a good account of himself as he managed to prevail over his opponent from Singapore, ranked 43rd, 24-22 21-19 in a match that lasted 39 minutes. He will be up against world no. 7 Chinese Du Pengyu in the quarterfinals.

Bishnoi powers Rajasthan to thrilling win over Kerala

M

UMBAI: Led by skipper Rajesh Bishnoi’s blistering 75 off 36 balls, Rajasthan rallied brilliantly from a difficult situation to beat Kerala by three wickets with a ball to spare for their second straight victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali All India T20 Group B game today. In another Group B game at the Wankhede Stadium, Delhi scored their first victory in three matches when they thrashed a lacklustre Bengal by seven wickets, thus inflicting the third straight defeat on the eastern side. Chasing a huge target of 173, Rajasthan started poorly at the Sharad Pawar indoor academy ground in Bandra Kurla Complex with four batsmen back in the hut with only 49 on the board in the eighth over. Bishnoi, who was dropped on nine in the 10th over, capitalised on the reprieve and forged a 47-

run stand with Naresh Gehlot and a 32-ball 70-run partnership with Divya Pratap Singh. The Rajasthan captain struck five fours and six sixes in his whirlwind knock before being dismissed by a freak run out in the last ball of the penultimate over. Gehlot made 42 off 37 balls (5x4,1x6) while Divya Pratap Singh made an unbeaten 18-ball 27 (3x4). Vinod Kumar picked up two wickets for 35 runs, while Manukrishnan, Basil Thampi and Rakesh KJ bagged a wicket each. Earlier, asked to bat, Kerala, who defeated Delhi in their opening game, scored the runs briskly and posted 172 for three with openers V A Jagadeesh and Rakesh adding 40 runs for the first wicket. Jagadeesh made a 19-ball 15, while Rakesh scored 16 off 21 balls and both struck two fours each.

match. In the men's doubles competition, Alwin Franchis and Arun Vishnu were humbled by the top seeded Indonesian combo of Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan 21-17 24-22. Another Indian pair of Arun Vishnu and Aparna Balan, too, failed to cross the second round hurdle, as they went down fight-

ber 113 Shizuka even after the break, moving from 14-10 to 1914 to pocket the game. In the second game, Uchida turned the tables after an early fight to lead 11-8, but Sindhu clawed back at 13-13. The Japanese, however, was not yet done as she again drew parity at 16-16 and reeled off four points to take the match to the decider. In the decider, Sindhu led 15-11 midway. But Uchida brought down the lead to 16-18 before Sindhu marched away with the remaining three points to seal the issue.

EW DELHI: After threatening to file a contempt petition in the Supreme Court, unrecognised Bihar Cricket Association secretary Aditya Verma today wrote to ICC President Alan Isaac, pleading with him to stop sidelined BCCI chief N Srinivasan from attending the governing body's Executive Board meeting in Dubai. Quoting the Supreme Court order which has forced Srinivasan to step aside as BCCI President due to the ongoing investigations in the IPL betting scandal, Verma said the ICC should also shun the Chennai strong-man. IN BRIEF Sanga, Mahela made correct decision to retire: Ranatunga

COLOMBO: It triggered quite a furore in Sri Lankan cricket but the country’s first World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga has backed Mahela Jayawrdene and Kumar Sangakkara’s decision to call it quits from Twenty20 Internationals, saying the duo’s timing was correct. The Jayawardene and Sangakkara were criticised by Sri Lanka Cricket for not taking the body in confidence before announcing their retirement at the end of the ICC World Twenty20, which Sri Lanka won by beating India in the final. In response, the two players, at a press conference held immediately after their return on Tuesday, blamed the SLC Secretary (Nishantha Ranatunga) and CEO (Ashley de Silva) for demoralising them ahead of the tournament in Bangladesh. But Ranatunga felt the retirement was timed to perfection. “The cricketers are the ones who know better than anyone, when the right time is to go. In the past we’ve seen that T20 is a young man’s game. I’m sure they’ve made the correct decision,” Ranatunga told ‘Inside Sports’ magazine.

MUMBAI: Former champions Air India played out a fighting 1-1 draw with Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers (RCF) in an Elite Division match of the MDFA (Mumbai District Football Association) League, played at the Goan Sports Association ground, Cross Maidan, on Thursdayevening. Okorogor Praise was on target for Air India while Sagar Chile netted for RCF. The match was a physical affair as both teams tried to gain the upper hand and dictate terms as a result referee Richard Dixon flashed the yellow card eight times, four to each team. Air India against the run of play snatched the lead when Nigerian recruit Praise found the net in the 15th minute. However, their joy was short-lived as the plucky RCF attackers regrouped and went all out in search of a goal. Five minutes later, they managed to restore parity through their hard-working and consistent goal-scorer Sagar Chile. In a Super Division match played at the St. Xavier’s ground, Parel, Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana got the better of Intellenet FC by a narrow 1-0 margin. EW DELHI: Seeking to revolutionise football in the country, organisers of the much-anticipated Indian Super League will unveil the eight franchises on Sunday, with cricket legends, Bollywood stars and a host of corporates in the fray to own teams. Organised by IMG Reliance in association with Star India, the league has the backing of All India Football Federation (AIFF), and is likely to see big names such as ex-Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke, former Argentina forward Hernan Crespo and England's Michael Owen. PTI has learnt that bidders include "Two Indian cricket legends, five Bollywood celebrities, three I-League clubs and five corporate entities". "It remains to be seen who would ultimately be awarded the franchises," a source close to the league said. This is being seen as an unrivalled football championship in the country once called 'sleeping giant' by FIFA president Sepp Blatter, and it aims to foster local talent by featuring international stars. Anticipation around the ISL seemed to have been building with the organisers receiving positive response from more than 30 interested parties to its 'Invitation To Bid' tender notice. The bids closed on March 27. It is learnt that around 18 to 20 bidders have put in their money on ISL either through forming a consortium or individually. This is for the first time that a fran-

Pistorius admits ‘no reason’ to fire fatal shots

P

RETORIA: Under pummelling crossexamination, Oscar Pistorius admitted today that he had "no reason" to fire the shots that killed Reeva Steenkamp, as prosecutors began to zero in on apparent inconsistencies in key parts of his account. During the second day of gruelling questioning, prosecutor Gerrie Nel began to pick at Pistorius's explanation of why he fired four times through his toilet door on Valentine's Day 2013. Pistorius has been charged with murdering his 29-year-old model girlfriend and faces a life sentence if convicted. The Olympian has said he fired the shots accidentally and did not mean to kill anyone. He testified that he feared someone was coming through the toilet door and that his life was in danger. This seemingly contradictory account was probed at length by Nel, who drew a concession from Pistorius that the shots should not have been fired at all. "We know for a fact there were no intruders in your house that night, we know for a fact there was no ladder against the wall," Nel said. "We know for a fact that you had no reason to shoot, objectively speaking." Pistorius responded: "That's correct my lady."

Kerala football fans want Sachin to bid for Kochi in ISL N

EW DELHI: Sachin Tendulkar has mesmerised millions of cricket fans during his 24-yearlong illustrious international career and the Indian batting legend has now become the source of hope for some young sports enthusiasts, this time from football, in Kerala. A group of 16 young football fans, under the banner of World Malayalee Football Fans Association, has begun a social media campaign in favour of Tendulkar bidding for Kochi franchise in the Indian Super League football tournament, scheduled to be held in September-October. Reports have been doing the rounds that Tendulkar may bid for the Kochi team, one of the likely franchises of the much-anticipated ISL, an IPL-style football league to be organised by IMG-Reliance. Rijni John, a telecommunication professional from a town near Kasaragod and the brain behind the campaign, said Tendulkar could be the godsend for the revival of football in Kerala if he happens to buy a Kochi-based team in the ISL. The selection process for the league will mostly take place in Bangalore on the lines of the Indian Premier League which will feature over 100 players out of which approximately 72 will be Indian including those from the junior category and over 24 will be international players hailing from countries like Pakistan, Iran, Bangladesh, Canada and Afghanistan among others. The team will get Rs. 72 lakhs to spend on their buys, which would have a cap of three overseas players. Speaking at the announcement of his maiden foray into active sports, Abhishek said he made up his mind to buy a franchise as the sport was taken for granted and since it is an indigenous sport to India, it should be promoted. “My tryst with the sport was restricted only with my father. I used to play with him. As a kid, I was first introduced to this sport by my father when I saw his movie, ‘Ganga Ki Saugandh’. This sport doesn’t need investment unlike cricket and football , you just need to draw a line to measure the area and start playing. It appealed to the patriot in me,” said Abhishek. While prominent centres like Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have been left out, Bachchan said the sole reason for them to miss the bus was the lack of quality of indoor stadiums, which was required for the league. “We couldn’t find quality stadiums over there which didn't meet the specifications,” he added.

ICC Board paves way for Associates to earn Test status D

UBAI: The ICC today paved the way for Associate Members to earn Test status by introducing the 'ICC Test Challenge' which will take place every four years between lowest ranked Test team and winner of ICC InterContinental Cup. The decision, taken at the ICC's Executive Board meeting, will effectively mean that one among Bangladesh and Zimbabwe --the two lowest-ranked Test teams in ICC rankings will have to fight it out with the likes of The Netherlands, Ireland or UAE for Test status. "The ICC Board approved the introduction of an ICC Test Challenge which will take place every four years between the lowest ranked Test team and the winner of the ICC Intercontinental Cup," a media release issued by ICC said. "The proposal is that the 10th ranked side on the Reliance ICC Test Team Rankings on 31 December 2017, or at the conclusion of any series in progress at that time, will play two five-day matches at home and two fiveday matches away against the winner of the upcoming ICC Intercontinental Cup, with the inaugural Challenge scheduled to take place during 2018," it said. In the next eight years, two ICC Intercontinental Cup tournaments are planned with the first to run from 2015 to 2017 and the second to be held between 2019 and 2021. The second ICC Test

Kenyan players celebrate a win. Challenge is scheduled for 2022. "The ICC Test Challenge now opens the door for Associate Members to play Test cricket and in doing so gives even greater context to the ICC Intercontinental Cup which will now be a pathway to Test cricket," ICC Chief Executive David Richardson was quoted as saying by the release. At the meeting, the board members followed up on the resolutions passed at the ICC Board Meeting in Singapore on February 8, 2014. "The ICC Board members agreed on a long-term work plan to support the implementation of those resolutions which do not require constitutional change," the release stated. At the same time the ICC Board authorised the drawing up of the

necessary constitutional amendments which will be placed before the Full Council at the ICC Annual Conference to be held in Melbourne at the end of June. One of the cornerstones of the new financial model is an extended Future Tours Programme (FTP) which will now run until 2023. Richardson on his part said,"The FTP is a very important piece of work as it gives Members long-term certainty in relation to both their playing schedule and financial planning. "Significant progress has been made but there is still work to be done to develop a balanced calendar of tours and finalise these agreements." The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) also came in for lot of

praise for a very successful organization of the recently concluded ICC World T20. "The ICC Board thanked the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for the successful staging of the ICC World Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014 and praised the Bangladesh government, security agencies and the general public for their contributions and support." ICC President Alan Isaac said:"The ICC World Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014 was an extremely successful event which was thoroughly enjoyed by the players, officials, spectators and media. A lot of credit must be given to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the ICC team for putting up a memorable show." At the same time the ICC Board authorised the drawing up of the necessary constitutional amendments which will be placed before the Full Council at the ICC Annual Conference to be held in Melbourne at the end of June. One of the cornerstones of the new financial model is an extended Future Tours Programme (FTP) which will now run until 2023. Richardson on his part said,"The FTP is a very important piece of work as it gives Members long-term certainty in relation to both their playing schedule and financial planning. Significant progress has been made but there is still work to be done to develop a balanced calendar of tours and finalise these agreements."

Atletico stun Barcelona, holders Bayern progress

P

ARIS: Atletico Madrid’s resurgence continued just a year after they were forced to sell leading scorer Radamel Falcao to reduce their huge debts as they eliminated Barcelona to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in 40 years. A goal by Koke — who has been with the club since he was eight years old saw them deservedly beat Barcelona 10 last night and progress 2-1 on aggregate and perhaps also register a changing of the guard at the top of Spanish and European football. Bayern Munich bidding to become the first team to successfully defend their title also reached the last four beating Manchester United 3-1, to go through 4-2 on aggregate. They join United’s Premier League rivals Chelsea who beat Paris Saint Germain on Tuesday and Atletico’s city rivals Real, victors over last season’s beaten finalists Borussia Dortmund, in Friday’s draw. Atletico who last beat Barcelona four years ago came roaring out of the blocks and got the only goal of the game through Koke, his first in this season’s tournament, in the fifth minute. Atletico, who are also top of La Liga in a three way battle with Barca and Real, could have been 3-0 up after fifteen minutes as former Barcelona striker David Villa hit the woodwork on two occasions. Barcelona were largely contained by Atletico and star player Lionel Messi had an especially torrid night as he failed to score against Atletico for the sixth successive game. For Atletico coach Diego Simeone who last year was forced to sell Falcao for 60 million euros ($83 million) when their debt was officially estimated at 170 million euros but some experts said it was up to 300 million euro it was another significant victory. “We maintain the same humility. We understand that the other teams (in the semi-finals) have been there far more than Atletico Madrid,” said the 43-year-old, who was a bundle of energy on the touchline urging the crowd to raise the noise level and continually making the sign of the cross. “We are there 40 years later and we believe in what we are doing.” It is the second time that Atletico and Real have reached the semi-finals of European club football’s most prestigious tournament in the same season — 1959 being the previous occasion, and is is only the fourth time clubs from the same city have reached the last four. AC Milan and Inter Milan in 2003 and London duo Arsenal and Chelsea in 2009 being the others. For 22year-old Koke, who made his senior debut aged just 17, it was an especially emotional night. “The team were spectacular in this game,” said Koke. “This team has no limits and we must keep on making the fans dream.” Defeat will heap the pressure on Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino, but Simeone’s compatriot was not focussing on that.
