Bhiwandi loom owners block roads in protest By Anil Vishwakarma
A
fter four days of shutting down their looms, power loom owners in Bhiwandi took to the streets and began to block roads on Monday in protest against increased electricity tariff. Owners of several large and small looms, as part of the Bhiwandi Power Loom Bachao Sangharsh Samiti, have been demanding a decrease in electricity rates which has not been accepted by Torrent Power. Most loom units have been shut down since November 6 with the samiti stating that if their demands were not accepted till November 10, they would take their protest to the streets. The demonstration, which was supported by the local MP and other parties, started at Anand Dhighe Chouk and ended at the MSEB (Maharashtra State Electricity Board) office. To prevent losses and to control an uneasy situation, the police was in action and even installed barricades in some areas. The four days of shutdown have started affecting power loom workers who have begun moving from Bhiwandi to other states in search of employment.

Chavan completes three years in office M
aharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, who completed three years in office today, was felicitated by the state Congress unit here. Replying to the felicitation by MPCC president Manikrao Thakre at the Congress office, the chief minister said his objective would be to ensure that the state retains its numero uno spot and to remove the developmental backlog. “The coming Lok Sabha election is not merely an electoral battle but a battle against communalist forces,” Chavan said. “Maharashtra has a long tradi-
tion of progressive thinking and has never tolerated communalism,” he said. The chief minister said he would work towards problems faced by 82 per cent farmers in the state who depend on rain-fed agriculture. Thakre lauded the "solid leadership" of Chavan, who he said had given the state a corruption-free and transparent administration. The work Chavan has done as chief minister would surely benefit the party, Thakre said. In the Lok Sabha elections, maximum number of MPs from the state would be of Congress, he added.
“I am confident that after the state Assembly polls next year, a Congress-led government will again assume power,” he said. Meanwhile, the Opposition alleged that Chavan kept his own image clean but shielded others who were corrupt. “Chavan kept his own image clean, but shielded his cabinet colleagues and others in irrigation and co-operative sector scams. He betrayed the people of the state by not tabling the Adarsh Society probe report within six months of its submission,” state BJP chief Davendra Phadanvis said.

Just look at the state of this war memorial in Ballard Estate, which for one brief moment actually had a chance of being repaired and refurbished, till it seemed that Prince Charles would not be pointed in its direction anyway. The legend on the metal plate rigged up before it announces that is has been designed by George Wittet, that the material used is buff basalt, and that the style of the column is neo classical. Now it will quietly crumble to dust, along with the scaffolding put up around the structure for the work that is unlikely to be even undertaken.
Short memories, forgotten memorials It’s interesting to learn that the war memorial at Ballard Estate had received some kind of attention around three weeks ago. Built of buff basalt to commemorate the dead in World War 1, someone came and stuck some bamboos around it in the manner of a scaffolding, for all the world as if a renovation job was to be undertaken on an urgent basis. Then – nothing. Now here is what we think might have happened. Someone probably told someone in the BMC or the MbPT that Prince Charles was due to drop in on the city, that he would be wearing a pink poppy in his buttonhole to commemorate Remembrance Day, which is a very big deal indeed in the UK, and that this day referred to the dead in World War 1. In particular, it referred to the disastrous battle of Flanders, of which a lot of people, provided they have had some sort of classical education, have heard in the form of a poem by war poet Colonel John McCrae. You know, the one that goes:
In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields.
And so on and so forth. Prince Charles went everywhere with his pink poppy, to the Taj to lay a wreath, to the mangroves in Vikhroli, to St. John the Evangelist on Sunday morning to meet war veterans, but not, of course of the First World War. However, he seems to have skipped the Ballard Estate memorial, possibly the only one of its kind in Mumbai, and we are willing to bet that interest in doing it up waned swiftly when it was known he was not coming there. For ourselves, we admit to being puzzled over the fuss about World War 1, especially since we are a remarkably unsentimental country when it comes to remembering our soldiers. Look at the politicians hogging valuable space in Delhi and Mumbai with their cremation spots being turned into steel and granite memorials. And Amar Jawan has to be content with a war helmet stuck onto a standing rifle at India Gate!
The measure of a man
If the way a man is remembered after his death in sheer numbers is
an indication of the kind of human being he was, Anant Dadoba Thakoor, late husband of the
redoubtable Anandini Thakoor, arguably Bandra-Khar-Santacruz’s most famous activist and social
03
worker, must have been an exceptional person. He died peacefully last Thursday, was cremated at Shivaji Park on Friday and on Saturday morning, a prayer meeting was held at SAISA in Bandra. For more than two hours people kept pouring in, the high and the mighty rubbing shoulders with the poor and the insignificant, while Anandini, at 80 still astoundingly fit, stood and accepted condolences. She had a word for everyone who came, and seemed to remember each by name. To some she spoke of her husband, to others she spoke of them! To us she mentioned how he had enjoyed life, living it ‘royally’. Every Wednesday he would be up at 4 am to leave the house at 5.30 am and be driven to his farm in Anjap village near Karjat. And he would go laden with all kinds of things for the villagers, returning only the following Sunday, after which he would repeat the whole cycle the next week. Both Anant and Anandini have been a legend in Bandra and Khar and Santacruz, both for their socialising and also for their dogooding. Which is why when we saw feisty volunteer traffic warden Anita Lobo at the meeting, we were not surprised. After all, Anandini stood by her like a rock when she was brought up against the likes of Industries Minister Narayan Rane’s son Nilesh in April this year, accused of blocking traffic on the road where she had been doing free work for the past 15 years. So enraged were citizens that Rane Jr. found himself running for cover and attending a meeting at Anandini’s house to ‘sort out’ the issue. Anandini herself is very much a working woman, and Monday following her husband’s death, was back at work at Standard Batteries in Worli.
Life must go on! After Bal Thackeray chose him as one of the core members of the Bhartiya Vidyarthi Sena, party representative in the senate and management council member of Mumbai University, Dilip Karande did the practically unthinkable. He kept the saffron flag fluttering in the senate and made sure stalwarts like Manohar Joshi more than got their due. At the same time, he was busy moulding party members to the needs of the senate ands generally acted like the loyal soldier he was, both to education and to the Shiv Sena. Last Saturday, Dilip Karande died suddenly of a heart attack – and all of a sudden it is as if the next generation barely knew he existed. Though political leaders from the Sena, the MNS and the BJP were present at the funeral, there was no-one from the Thackeray family, who seemed to have been too busy to attend the cremation, or even, till our last intimation, call up the family to extend condolences. Which may be saddening, but
Dilip Karande
is not entirely unexpected, for it has been noticed that the next gen of the Thackeray’s seemed equally oblivious to the death of a veteran party leader like Shantaram Nandgaonkar, who was the party’s Member of Legislative Council. And then there is Shabbir Shaikh, another veteran who was once a powerful MLA and now virtually forgotten. Of course, that he is reportedly
suffering from Alzheimer’s disease could be a reason, but even then, sometimes it is nice to remember those who were loyal to one even when the going was not particularly good. And to use tech parlance for those who number among the most recent entrants to family politics in the party, there’s even an app for this sort of thing. It is called consideration.

n a relief to Bollywood actor Govinda, the Bombay High Court today quashed a complaint filed against him by Santosh Rai accusing the industry veteran of slapping and intimidating him in 2008. Justice M L Tahaliyani, while quashing the private complaint lodged by Rai before a metropolitan magistrate, observed that there is no material against Govinda for criminal intimidation. Rai had on February 2, 2009, filed the complaint against Govinda under sections 323(Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach) and 506 (1) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal
Code. The complaint was filed pursuant to the actor slapping Rai, a visitor on his film sets, on January 16, 2008, according to PTI. Govinda had approached the High Court seeking to quash the proceedings initiated against him
2008 SLAP CASE by the magistrate court. “The magistrate could not have taken cognizance of offences committed under section 323 and 504 as the complaint was filed a year after the incident allegedly occurred. Regarding section 506 (1) (criminal intimidation) the court should have first determined if there is prima
facie material to prove it,” Justice Tahaliyani said. The High Court also took note of a police report which states that the incident did not occur in the manner stated by the complainant. “No doubt some incident had occurred. However, there is no material to prove criminal intimidation. It appears that the complainant was instigated to file the complaint after a year,” the court said. It further observed that the accused had not acted in any manner which caused alarm to the complainant. “Such a prosecution cannot be allowed to continue and it deserves to be quashed,” said Justice Tahaliyani.

A copy of the reply has been sent to the Member of Parliament Sanjeev Naik. Decent looking duo used to enter crowded shops and steal expensive clothes, valuables taking advantage of the rush hour
By Neel Shah
W
ith the help of the CCTV footage Mumbai Police on Saturday last arrested two women who had disappeared with garments worth nearly Rs 30, 000 from a shop in Vikhroli. The accused, identified as Deepali Giri (28) and Nayna Sable (19), were arrested from Thane’s Kopri area by the police personnel from Vikhroli police station. According to the police, the duo used to visit high-end
garments and gifting shops in eastern suburbs and stole garments and costly gifts. These women, pretending to be from a well-to-do-family used to enter expensive shops especially when they are crowded, said police. Further, taking advantage of the crowd the accused used to disappear with expensive garments and valuables from the shops. After the arrest of both the accused, police learnt that the women are history-sheeters and belong to a cartel of con
women whose are still at large. The recent arrest of the two cartel members would force the cartel to go into hibernation, cops believe. On October 30, the arrested duo had visited the garment shop of Dattaray Raut in Vikhroli. There the accused women fled away with nearly 60 expensive readymade men’s shirts, which were worth nearly Rs 30, 000. It was only at late night when Raut was clearing the day’s accounts he learned that the shirts worth nearly
Rs.30,000 were missing. Immediately, he along with his staff scrutinised the CCTV footage and was shocked to witness that two women were walking out with the garments. A complaint was lodged at Vikhroli police station and based on information about the accused, police arrested them. Meanwhile, the police are currently hunting for the cartel, which they believe was active from past one year.

informed her parents. She was completely traumatised, shocked and inconsolable. As Ahmed was known to the girl, he was easily identified by locals, who gathered and thrashed him before handing him over to the police. A police officer from DN Nagar police station said, “The accused Ahmed has been charged with molestation and the stringent protection of children from sexual abuses 2012. He was produced in the Andheri court and remanded to police custody. The child very traumatised and therefore, after consoling her, her statement was taken. Her minor friends are being treated as prime eyewitnesses in the case.” This is second incident in two days where a minor was attacked by a rapist but was rescued in the nick of time. On Saturday afternoon, a five-year-old was taken by an accused, Mohammad Naseem Sheikh to his house in Oshiwara. A woman from the locality noticed this and alerted the locals. Sheikh was just attempting rape when he was nabbed by locals and handed over to the police.

4-year-old girl managed to free herself from an accused who was attempting rape her at DN Nagar late on Sunday night. He was later nabbed by locals and handed over to the police. The accused, identified as Akmal Ahmed, has been charged with molestation under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Abuse 2012 Act, and has been remanded to police custody. This is second incident in just two days in Andheri, where a minor has become a victim of attempted rape. Ahmed is a resident of the same area where the girl lives with her parents, and worked for private garment firm. On Sunday, the girl was out playing with her female friends when Ahmed arrived and took her to an isolated place. He then dragged her into an auto-rickshaw which was parked nearby where he molested her and removed her undergarments. In a desperate bid to protect herself, the girl bit Ahmed and managed to escape and rush to her house, where she

Aftab Surve
ftab Mohd Ali Surve (43) alias Pathan, who was booked for raping a 30-yearold woman during the last week of October, was finally arrested by the Nehru Nagar police on Sunday. The woman is currently employed as a private security guard in a civic hospital. The police have also booked one Reshma Mohd Gulzar Shaikh (31) for aiding Surve. Incidentally, the accused had threatened the victim against filing a complaint, telling her that he had good
contacts with the police. Since he kept pestering her to have sex with him, the victim, who had been raped by him on one occasion earlier, finally mustered courage and approached higher police authorities, which eventually led to his arrest. Suresh Bhavar, the senior police inspector of Nehru Nagar police station said, “Aftab has been arrested under sections 376 (rape), 354 (A) (molestation) and 506 Part II (criminal intimidation). He was produced in court which remanded him to police custody till November 15. He claims to be a journalist.”

MASS SUICIDE CITY
ven though a hunger strike by teachers is now into its tenth day, it seems the Maharashtra CM, Prithviraj Chavan, cannot be bothered to show any concern. On Sunday, when he visited the Azad Maidan for an event, the CM just strode past the teachers, who have been protesting against the government for non-payment of their salaries since the last thirteen years. Though he was just 10-15 feet away, all he did was just wave his hand towards them. Angry and frustrated, the teachers have now threatened that if the CM does not come up with a solution regarding their salaries, they will be committing mass suicide at the Azad Maidan itself. In 2001, the state government had implemented the permanent non-grants commission, under which schools are not to be provided any further amount of grants
from its coffers. Due to this, teachers have not been paid better scale salaries under the Fifth or Sixth Pay Commissions. The result of the implementation of the non-grants scheme has led to the nonpayment of salaries since the last thirteen years. Being without salaries, these teachers have had to pick up jobs like waiters, gardeners and rickshaw drivers to earn a
livelihood. On Sunday, the CM had visited an event at Azad Maidan which was organized just opposite to the place were these teachers have been sitting on a hunger strike. Though they called out to the CM for a meeting them, he ignored their protest and walked away, after just waving at them. This created much anger amongst the teachers.

The ADC talked to T.M Naik, state president, Maharashtra state permanent nongrants high school action committee, who said, “We have been on a hunger strike since the last 10 days. Our teachers are losing their health, they don’t have the strength to stand, but the CM has shown no concern for us. He was just 10-15 feet away from us but he just waved his hand and walked away. What type of government or state is it where we teachers have to teach but have to be on the roads to protest for ours rights. If the CM doesn’t come out with a solution as soon as possible, we are already on a hunger strike - we will step ahead and commit mass suicide!” This is their 122nd protest across the state and the 40th in Mumbai. For 10 days now, the teachers have been consuming only water, hoping their demands will be addressed.

Sachin Tendulkar fans, disappointed at not being able to procure tickets for the Master Blaster’s final Test match, thronged a counter in Wankhede stadium on Monday. The authorities have announced that all tickets will be available online. The Test match between India and West Indies will commence on November 14. Zoonga.com entrusted by Mumbai Cricket Association to sell 3,000 tickets online crashed even as aficionados were frantically trying to access the site to grab hold of the tickets allotted to KyaZoonga by MCA. Not just that, a crowd had gathered at the stadium in the morning, hoping that there would be a sale of tick-
ets. But with no tickets on sale, the police had to be summoned to disperse the irate fans. With one and all falling over themselves to be a part of the tremendous hype and hoopla over the Sachin farewell Test, even the hotel where the cricketers will stay added more than a tinge of fanfare, lighting itself all up
in blue for the ‘Little Master’s final Test stay there. Tickets for the match are presently a much sought after item, with the MCA being inundated with calls from here, there and everywhere including as far away from USA for tickets. With MCA being ‘generous’ enough to present Sachin Tendulkar with 500 tickets, there is no doubt that tickets, whatever their cost, will be sold at a premium in the coming days with even former Test star Sunil Gavaskar willing to cough up the cost of 50 tickets for himself. After all, there are only 32,000 seats at the stadium, and in the lead-up to the opening day of the second Test on November 14, it’s certain that tickets will be worth their weight in silver, if not gold! For one, the ticket itself is a collector’s item, with images of the cricketer splashed all over, and it’s not everyday that a Mumbaikar with 200 Tests to his name retires from all forms of cricket!

ecks finally appear to have been cleared for the ambitious Navi Mumbai International Airport. Speaking to newspersons at Sahyadri state guest house here yesterday, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan announced that the Project Affected People (PAPs) have accepted the government proposal of giving 22.5 per cent of developed land in lieu of acquired land. Replying to queries he said that if no developer comes forward and the project cost turns out to be high then the government is also considering the proposal for developing the airport without reclaiming land from the sea near Navi Mumbai considering the possibility of the union Environment
ministry giving its nod. Giving details of the compensation package offered to the PAPs, the PAPs will be given Rs 1,000 per sq.ft. construction cost in addition to threefold land for the affected houses. Besides this, all the PAPs will get 100 shares worth Rs 10 each in the new airport company that will be floated. Those farmers whose land is to be acquired will be given 12.5 per cent developed land in the designated airport area with 1.5 FSI. Moreover, the farmers will also get 10 per cent additional developed land along with 2.5 FSI from CIDCO. This additional 10 per cent land and 2.5 FSI will be given to PAPs in new de-

done metro work of at least 10 km and the same should have been operational for a minimum of two years”. “CIDCO has completed almost 50 per cent of the civil work for the first phase of metro line between Belapur and Pendhar and the corporation will be allotting the contract to only one firm, unlike the civil works, wherein six contractors shared the responsibility. The estimated cost of these technical works is Rs.1,020 crore and the corporation’s aim is to complete the process by January 2014”. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

Chavan stated that the PAPs living in the 10 villages coming under the designated core area of the airport will be given three times the land on which their affected homes stand. For this a minimum area of 40 sq.mtrs. has been fixed. The PAPs will be given Rs.1,000 per sq.ft as construction cost for constructing new houses. The condition of constructing houses within the 200 meter periphery of the villages has been removed. Those PAPs who have commercial establishments will be given 15 per cent of developed land. The chief minister dis-
closed that the PAPs have now consented to the survey of the land. Sources disclosed that the tendering process should be finalised by November end while the actual construction work of the airport would take another four to five years. Chavan stated that he would be placing both the options before Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh when he meets the latter in New Delhi on November 13 to discuss the major infrastructure projects in the state. He added that the new airport project had been hanging in balance for the last 8 to 10 years and once constructed it will cater to 10 crore passengers annually.

Ponder awhile... “Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws.” — Plato
What’s on between JK separatists & Pak? I
T is a well-known fact that the “separatists” of Jammu and Kashmir are in touch with Pakistan’s ISI and terrorist leaders like Hafiz Saeed. They are clearly opposed to Kashmir being a part of India and they utilise every possible opportunity to cause unrest in the state. It is quite surprising that J&K’s Chief Minister Omar Abdulla has taken no action against them: Once in a way, they were put on house arrest but they were not stopped from carrying on anti-India propaganda. It is obvious that they have many friends in Pakistan. Apparently they figure in a big way in Pakistan’s continuing correct operations in the state. They appear to have engaged the attention of Pakistan’s prime minister Nawaz Sharif who sent his advisor Sartaj Aziz to meet them in Delhi. Three separatists – Mirwaz Farooq, Yasin Malik and Syed Ali Geelani – met him at the Pakistan High Commission office in Delhi. What actually they discussed is not known. The talks could only have been with regard to the nature and extent of cooperation between them with regard to the dispute over India and Pakistan over the Kshmir issue. Should India have stopped the meeting between the separatists and the Pakistan PM’s advisor Aziz? Why were they allowed to meet Aziz? Do they represent Kashmir and India? If the advisor of Sharif wanted to meet those who represent Kashmir, he should have met Chief Minister Omar Abdulla and not the separatists who have no following in the state at all. During the last assembly elections, people ignored the separatists’ call to boycott elections and voted. They are friends of Pakistan and there is strong proof that in the final conflict between the two countries, they will side with Pakistan. The pertinent question is why India allowed them to meet and talk to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s advisor. All that was said by our government was: “it was very unfortunate”.
I
NDIA’S interests would have been served better if Sardar Patel, in place of Jawaharlal Nehru, had been the country’s Prime Minister. This hypothetical possibility had been voiced by Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as a poll campaign for the Bhartiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate in the 2014 parliament elections. Of all the leaders, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Nehru’s friend, guide and philosopher, came to the same conclusion after watching Nehru as an administrator. Azad was in Nehru’s cabinet and saw him from close quarters. Azad told his secretary, Humayun Kabir, that they should have made Nehru the country’s president and Patel its prime minister. Kabir and I were close friends. He recalled Azad’s observation when Kabir was the education minister in the Nehru cabinet. By no stretch of imagination, Azad can be linked with Patel or his philosophy. During the national struggle, both ardent participants, were poles apart and made no secret of their stance. Patel was a pro-Hindu but strictly adhered to pluralism. Azad was secular through and through and boldly faced the charge of ‘Hindu show boy’ that the Muslim League made against him. He did not flinch even for a second to say publicly that the formation of Pakistan would be injurious to the health of Muslims.
The wounds of partition He would say before partition that the Muslims could walk proudly in the country with their heads held high that they were equal partners, even though they were fewer in numbers. Once India was divided on the basis of religion, the Hindus would tell the Muslims that they had taken their share and should, therefore, go to Pakistan. Patel may not have commented on pluralism in unequivocal terms in which Azad did. But I recall that when after partition I sought shelter in Delhi, journeying from my hometown Sialkot, part of Pakistan, I heard Patel warning Pakistan against the exodus of Hindus. He said that India would send out the Muslims in proportion to the Hindus ousted from Pakistan. It was a strange logic of pushing the innocent Muslims living in India for the sins of Muslims in Pakistan. Even after 67 years of division, this approach has not been disowned

either in India or Pakistan. Pakistan has ousted practically all Hindus, but the Muslims are around 18 crore in India. When there is tension between the two countries, many Hindus refer to Muslims as Pakistanis. Little purpose will be served in pursuing this point because the wounds of partition are far from healed and the people in both the communities continue to be exploited in the name of religion. Left to Patel, he would have had an exchange of population before accepting partition. Nehru was different. He did not mix religion with politics or the state. The distance in separation in their approach made Mahatma Gandhi, who led the war of independence, to nominate Nehru as his succes-
IBBERISH is to get rid of the active mind, silence to get rid of the inactive mind and let-go is to enter into the transcendental.” “Remember, the first step of the meditation is Gibberish. Gibberish simply means throwing out your craziness, which is already there in the mind, piled up for centuries. As you throw it out you will find yourself becoming light, becoming more alive, just within two minutes. You will be surprised that when Nivedano [the drummer] gives his second beat, to enter into silence, you enter into silence as deeply as you have never done before. Just those two minutes have cleaned the way. In fact in those two minutes, if you put your total energy ... the more you put into it, the deeper will be the following silence. Any child can do Gibberish, it doesn´t need any training. From the very first moment you are almost trained. Gibberish needs no training, nor does laughter need any training. It announced its independence and initiated the process of seceding. VP had an extra man in khaki when he went to the Travancore maharaja. He signed the instrument of accession. He explained subsequently that he did not want his family to suffer and spend years in jail.
The RSS’ criticism of Gandhi
Gandhiji was also confident that his secular ideals would be safer in the hands of Nehru. This was proved when Patel refused to release Rs. 64 crore to Pakistan. This sum was part of assets which India had agreed to transfer while agreeing to the partition details. Patel asked how he could release the money when India and Pakistan was engaged in a war over Kashmir. Gandhiji had to go on a fast unto death to make Patel relent. The extremist Hindus had vitiated the atmosphere of amity over the sum of Rs. 64 crore and society was sought to be polarised. They criticised Gandhiji again and again for being anti-national and anti-Hindu. The RSS, the fallout of the Hindu Mahasabha’s philosophy of Hinduva, hatched a conspiracy and shot Gandhiji dead. Patel was quite right in banning the RSS Kuldip Nayar and blaming it for disturbing the atmosphere of secularism. Once again the slant of Patel sor. All eyes on Wankhede for Sachin’s finale NOVEMBER 14th is not only Children’s day but D-day for Sachin Tendulkar’s long and illustrious career. Wankhede wicket is going to be slow so as to help to Sachin to notch up his 52nd test century and sign off in style. The stage is set for achieving a new landmark of 200th Test Match and to bid goodbye. BCCI was bent upon having the farewell match in our backyard and even cancelled the South African tour for the time being giving lame excuses. Sachin, as a seasoned cricketer could have played his last match anywhere in the world. But BCCI wants to make him retire peacefully at home without getting injured in the last two matches. That is why feather bed of a wicket is prepared by the curator Suru Nayak. The sleeping beauty of a wicket will see him achieve a new landmark. Great Donald Bradman got out for zero in his last innings thus preventing him having 100 plus average in test match cricket. Sachin miss two great records:- 1. Hitting a century in each innings in Test cricket and 2. Hitting a triple hundred in Test match cricket. End of an era is in sight. Everything is well and truly prepared for the final call. — Dorai Subbu, Vashi

PM’s decision not right THE decision of the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh not to attend the summit of Commonwealth leaders in Colombo will rank among its lowest points as opposed to sacrificing national interests to appease Tamil Nadu and its people hoping for some support for Congress in the state and at the national level, but he does not realise that he has shot himself in the foot as far as wider national opinion is concerned, even in Tamil Nadu his party is unlikely to make much headway. The decision of the Congress Party is a reflection of its deepseated political insecurity in the run-up to Lok Sabha elections and its desired hopes that the DMK will be a partner in the alliance. It is evident that India has lost its any leverage with Colombo. There is little chance that Indian can request the Sri Lankan government to give autonomy to Tamils in their country whom the Indian Tamil swear by after the holding of provincial council elections in the Tamil north of the country.

GLORIOUS SWANSONG: Sachin will make his final appearance for the Indian team in international Test cricket when he steps out onto the Wankhede pitch on November 14. Sachin Tendulkar will be making his last appearance in the international Test cricket. The whole nation looks forward to see him play in the last Test match at Wankhede and will always miss him whenever any international match is played by Indian team in future. His calibre, strokeplay, patience on the ground was superb and especially he used to always give a tough time to Australians while playing against them and all will notice exchange for their Parties’ support to any “secular” dispensation that may stake its claim to form the next govt at the Centre.
THE next Test, the last to be played by Tendulkar starts on Children’s Day, November 14. The MCA and BCCI should have ideally sold tickets only to schools. The capacity of the ground is about 40,000. Every day 20,000 school children, maximum 200 from each school could have been invited at a very nominal rate. In five days, 500 schools that are willing to pay can be covered. It would have been a great gesture in honour of someone who was still in school when he made his debut. BCCI needs to think beyond the moolah. — T.R. Ramaswami, Kandivli

NaMo’s criticism in bad taste THE BJP’s PM-designate, Narendra Modi, is continuing on an unchecked aggressive spree, spewing venom and vitriol with an unprecedented degree of nonchalance in his election speeches which is totally uncalled for and something none of his party leaders has done in the past. While criticising the other party’s performance with a view to showing how there have been lapses in some areas is quite
legitimate, describing the election symbol ‘hath’ as ‘bloodied hand’ and ‘criminal hand’ is certainly condemnable because the voters can be psychologically turned off while seeing it on the voting machine. This is a classic example of a ‘hate speech’ and one wonders why the Election Commission has not reacted to it so far, as it did in the case of Rahul. His party does not have the right credentials for him to talk about corruption and inflation is not the creation of only the UPA government. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane

HATE SPEECH: NaMo terming the Congress Party’s election symbol as a ‘khuni panja’ is a highly condemnable utterance.
THE American Law under which Narendra Modi is being denied the US visa is: ‘Entry into the country is barred to the foreign govt. officials found to be complicit in severe violations of religious freedom.’ If this rule is strictly applied in letter and spirit, then none of the govt. functionaries from the sixty-odd Islamic countries in the world would qualify for the grant of US visa. The White House is well aware of the severe plight of the religious minorities in all these theocratic
nations, but due to political compulsions, it always turns a blind eye towards them. — Arun Malankar, Santa Cruz
THE Congress has felt offended by the remarks of NaMo when he called their Party symbol (hand) as ‘khuni panja’. However, they did not find anything wrong when their Party supremo had referred to Mr. Modi as Maut-KaSaudagar. Meanwhile, as per a press report, the Americans have reportedly expressed their willingness to do business with the BJP led by Narendra Modi, if the NDA succeeds in forming the next govt. at New Delhi. If true, then it goes against the White House’s oft repeated stand of not granting visa to NaMo on the grounds of his alleged human rights violations. Also, is the event of NaMo being crowned as PM at the Centre going to alter his image as a “communal” leader? Does the assumption of power by a person lead to change of “facts” that have supposedly taken place prior to his being sworn in? — Vineet Phadtare, Borivali

Killer gets into hospital to evade arrest By Zuber Ansari

ven after four days, the Aarey police have failed to arrest a murder accused who has got himself admitted into a private hospital in Mira Road under the pretext that he had met with an accident and is unable to even stand properly. Family members of the victim are alleging that the local police are helping the murderer to take refuge in the hospital and that the murderer’s family is putting pressure on police not to arrest him. On Friday last week, an unidentified youth, aged around 30, was found murdered inside the forest at Aarey Colony, Unit 16. Apparently, the killer also tried to burn the body, which had multiple injuries, to prevent identification. The throat of the youth had been slit and his face had been fully burnt. The brutality of the crime indicated that it was a revenge killing. The police found the victim’s bloodstains in the bushes just 100 metres away from where the body was found. Within 24 hours, the police successfully identified the accused as well the dead person, but shockingly, despite knowing that the accused had taken shelter in a hospital under false pretext, they failed to arrest him. The deceased, Alauddin Salauddin Khan (20), and the accused Arshad Shaukat Siddique (27) were business partners, but Alauddin was killed due to some personal problem, said sources from the family, claiming that it was over a girl that Arshad killed Alauddin. Talking to the ADC, Additional Commissioner of Police (North) Sunil Paraskar said that, “I am aware about the dead body but did not know that the accused had been identified.

lizabeth Wurtzel, an American writer, chronicles her battle against depression as a 26-year-old college undergraduate and her experience with the antidepressant medication Prozac, in her memoir titled Prozac Nation. Talking about mental disorders in the book, she writes, “Mental illness is so much more complicated than any pill that any mortal could invent.” Our brain is a maze and no one can claim to know all about its many crevices, twists, turns and secret passages. While all of us are aware of mental problems such as obsessive compulsive disorders and schizophrenia, there are a few disorders that are nothing short of bizarre. Some might have a rational explanation behind their occurrence, but several still stand under an expansive cloud of obscurity. Here are 15 mental disorders that we think will leave you as astounded as they left us.
Landau-KLeffner Syndrome Children between the ages of five and seven develop this syndrome where they lose their ability to express themselves or understand a language. Some people who suffer from this syndrome also suffer from seizures. Scientists are yet to understand why the disorder occurs. The strange bit is that the children develop their language and speaking skills normally and then all of a sudden lose them. Speech therapy can be helpful in managing the condition, but it is fairly difficult to treat.
Jumping frenchmen of maine A bizarre disorder with a bizarre name, this disorder first occurred in 1878. An individual with this disorder has a genetic alteration that prevents the signals in the brain that excite you to regulate or control them. This causes shocking and abnormal responses. For example, a sufferer (often addressed as ‘jumper’) of this syndrome will have an extended and exaggerated response to an incident that might mildly excite normal people. They might cry out, flail their limbs and sometimes have convulsions. Another strange abnormality caused by this disorder is a sufferer’s Continued on pg 14 «

Sufferers of this disorder are normal in every other way but face a problem when they have to make certain choices, so much so that they stop functioning normally. Some aboulomania sufferers face incredible difficulties in daily life, finding it nearly impossible to do simple things — even wondering whether or not they should go for a walk can paralyse them with indecision. Many sufferers report that their incapacity to do what they want comes in spite of that fact that they’re aware of being physically fine — and so they seem to be imprisoned by the inability to fulfil their own will.

Capgras delusion The Capgras delusion is a disorder in which a person believes that an acquaintance has been replaced by an identical looking impostor. It is most common in patients with schizophrenia, although it also occurs in those with dementia, or after a brain injury. In one of the cases reported to be Capgras, a 74-year-old woman believed that her husband had been replaced by another man. She refused to be near him, locked her bedroom door in the night and asked her son to get her a gun to protect herself from the purported impostor. She easily recognised other family members and would misidentify just her husband. This delusion has been used in movies and books such as Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Total Recall and The Stepford Wives.
mary Hart syndrome

Fregoli delusion
If you are suffering from Boanthropy, you start believing that you are a cow or an ox. Popular theory about the disorder indicates that this behaviour is seen in a dream which slowly extends to the person’s real life and transforms into a delusion. Nebuchadnezzar, King of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, was a famous victim of this disorder and was believed to be suffering from it to an extent where he ate grass thinking he was an oxen.
This disorder is the exact opposite of Capgras (box) — here a person believes that different people are actually a single person who regularly changes his or her appearance or is in disguise. This delusion was first reported in 1927 where a 27-year-old woman alleged that she was being mistreated by two actors whom she went to see at the theatre. She believed that these actors followed her closely and took forms of other people she meets and knows.

>> Mary Hart, the TV host, whose voice sent people into seizures While some celebrities have drinks and perfumes to their name, Mary Hart has a syndrome to hers! Mary Hart is an American television personality and was the host of the gossip and entertainment program Entertainment Tonight from 1982 to 2011. Apparently, Mary Hart’s voice has the ability to generate seizures. There are reported cases of people experiencing seizures after hearing her talk. A doctor who was studying these claims said that a woman fell into a seizure when she heard Mary’s voice. However, another important observation to note is that this syndrome affects only people who are already suffering from seizures due to other factors.
stendHal syndrome A person suffering from Stendhal Syndrome experiences rapid heartbeat, dizziness, confusion and even hallucinations when he or she comes across a lot of beautiful art in a single space. A lot of natural beauty can also trigger a similar reaction. It is named after the famous 19th century French author Stendhal who described his experience with the phenomenon during his 1817 visit to Florence, Italy in his book Naples and Florence: A Journey from Milan to Reggio.
One of the most peculiar ones, Autophagia is a disorder where you start eating your own body parts, simply by biting them off and chewing them. Last year, the case of a 66-year-old man suffering from this disorder who mutilated his fingers for six years was reported. This behaviour started as serious nail biting and continued as severe finger mutilation (by biting), resulting in loss of the terminal phalanges of all fingers in both hands. In his case, this self-mutilating behaviour was associated with severe diabetic neuropathy, impulsivity and social isolation. The administration of a combination of an antipsychotic and an antidepressant proved to be beneficial.
alien Hand syndrome If you have watched the British-American black comedy Dr. Strangelove, then you might be aware of this one. A sufferer of Alien Hand Syndrome seems to have a hand that has a mind of its own. It moves, grabs things and responds to touch — all of this without the control of the person to whom it belongs. People who suffer from this disorder often address this unmanageable arm as a third person or entity. There is no cure for this syndrome. However, the symptoms can be reduced and managed to some degree by keeping the alien hand occupied and involved in a task, for example by giving it an object to hold. Specific tasks can restore voluntary control of the hand to a significant degree.
Cotard delusion The Cotard delusion is a rare disorder in which a person believes that he or she is dead, does not exist, is decomposing or has lost their blood or internal organs. Rarely, it can include delusions of immortality. In one of the cases that occurred in 1990, a man was taken to South Africa after his discharge, by his mother. He believed that he was in hell because of the heat and that he died of a disease that he was admitted to the hospital. He also thought that he had borrowed his mother’s spirit to show him around hell.

hair, nose hair, pubic hair, eyebrows or other body hair, sometimes resulting in noticeable bald patches. Trichotillomania often starts occurring in the teenage years and depression and stress can be a cause of it.
nympHomania On first impression, some men might wish their female partners would suffer from this disorder, but Nymphomania can drastically get out of hand with cataclysmic effects for a relationship. It is a disorder where women have an uncontrollable yearning to have sex, making them sex addicts. They are unable to control their sexual impulses and their entire life is surrounded by sexual fantasies and behaviour. At a later stage, this obsession with sex hinders their social, professional and marital or romantic life. A man experiencing a similar condition is called satyriasis.
genital retraCtion An individual experiencing this will believe that his genitals and in the case of women, their breasts, are shrinking or have been removed from their bodies altogether. Something that is even more peculiar is that there have been instances where this syndrome has affected many people at the same time, popularly called as penis panic. In China, penis panic has occurred in 1948, 1955, 1966, 1974 and 1984/85.
erotomania “You don’t know that you love me, but I know that you do!” Another very strange one, people undergoing Erotomania are deluded into thinking that someone is in love with them. That is still easy enough to fathom, but what makes this one all the more strange is that this person who is supposedly in love with the sufferer is of a much higher status and often a celebrity. Even if the supposed lover denies any feeling toward the sufferer, they are still not ready to believe it. There is not much known with regards to this disorder’s treatment.

BATTLE THE BUFFET! >> Ensure you make the most of your buffet eating experience by eating small portions and healthy preparations
In times of frugality, all-you-can-eat buffets appeal to everyone. However, we tend to overeat to get our money’s worth says Jessica Turkahia. While there is logic to this, it is not doing your body any good
SuRVEy THE AREA As soon as you head to a buffet, walk around and check out your options without a plate in hand. Make mental notes of food that looks good and food you can skip. Then grab a plate help yourself only to the dishes that you really want.
GO FOR THE GREENS Make the salad bar your first stop. Pile your plate with leafy greens, colourful vegetables and opt for a non-creamy dressing such as a vinaigrette. Eating a salad first can keep you from overeating the other courses, which tend to be higher in calories.
SkiP THE BREAd
after a few mouthfuls, drink some water, talk to the people you are with. It will make all the difference.
AVOid ANyTHiNG CRiSPy Avoid anything that is crunchy, crispy or covered in batter as it is full of calories and fat. Steer clear of foods such as french fries and pakoras. Wouldn't you much rather have cake for dessert?
TRy NEw THiNGS If you are going to eat something unhealthy as a treat, then make it count. Why eat pizza when you can eat it at home? Make the most of eating out by trying new foods.
PiCk PROTEiNS
Bread is cheap and restaurants know it will fill you up, so that you don't eat too much of the more expensive items. The bread is nearly always white, making it unhealthy and a total waste of calories.
Protein is filling and healthy, which makes it a good choice. Choose beans and eggs over high fat items such as pizza and chips.
SOuP
JuST A LiTTLE BiT
Soup is filling and can be extremely healthy, making it a worthy contender at a buffet. Vegetable soup is the best, but ensure that it doesn't contain cream. Studies show that people who eat soup before their main course end up eating less during the main course.
Eat a little bit of what you fancy or you will cave in and end up eating too much of it. Help yourself to some pizza or fries, but only take a small portion.
EAT SLOwLy It takes your brain 30 minutes to realise it is full and this is dangerous when eating at a buffet. You try to eat as much as you possibly can, not realising you are full until it's too late. Pause
dESSERT! Eating healthily doesn't mean you can't enjoy desserts. Get a small plate for dessert and cover most of it with fruit. This will give you something sweet, without all the calories. Cut a small piece of the cake you really want. Alternatively, get a plate of cakes for everyone at the table.
« KNOW MORE: FROZEN OR FRESH? As the age-old debate of fresh food vs. frozen food continues, Jessica Turakhia brings you the pros and cons of both FROZEN VEGETABLES PROS Most importantly, frozen vegetables do not rot and last much longer than fresh vegetables. l They are processed soon after they are picked. You will find that the nutritional value of frozen vegetables is still intact as the nutrients are ‘frozen in’. l Frozen vegetables can be stored for several months. l There’s no denying that they are convenient and easy to use. l Frozen vegetables are affordable even when they are out of season and you’re going to get the same amount of nutrients. There might be a negligible loss of some l
vitamins during processing, but for the most part you’re still going to benefit from eating them.
FRESH VEGETABLES
CONS
l You
Bear in mind that you are losing some amount of nutrition by using frozen vegetables. l Sometimes, some companies add salt or sugar to the vegetables. Make sure you check the ingredients list before picking up a packet. l Some vegetables have a soggy texture once you defrost them because ice crystals damage the vegetable cell walls. l Certain vegetables, such as bok choy and lettuce do not freeze well, meaning limited vegetables are available in this form. l
PROS: will get all of the nutrients and vitamins possible from the vegetables. l It is also a lot easier to cook with fresh vegetables. They usually have a better texture as compared to frozen vegetables. l They are healthier, taste less processed and are much better for your body. l The fibre content doesn't deteriorate easily which means that week-old fresh vegetables still have value despite lowered vitamin levels.
CONS: l l
Fresh vegetables don't last very long. Fresh produce loses 10 to 15% of its
nutrients during shipping from the grower, to the market and then to your table. During this time, the vegetables have been exposed to light and air, which damages the chemical makeup of vitamins l Fresh vegetables don’t taste as good when you consume them out of season and can be more expensive.

RESET THE CLOCK

Resetting your body clock or ensuring that your body clock is in order is quite an easy task. In fact, scientists have recently developed a drug that acts like your body clock’s master reset button. Basically, if your body clock is disrupted, the drug will reset it so that you can set it again according to the timezone you are in. However, it is meant for those suffering from jet lag and won’t help you if it is your lifestyle that’s causing the problems. For that, keep these tips in mind:
« 10 Ways To use BoosT your Body image We’re constantly being told that we need to have toned abs, a round bottom and muscular legs, so it comes as no surprise that even the most confident among us can feel a little bad about their body. sleep at the same time: This is the most important step in ensuring a well-functioning body clock. Sleeping erratically confuses your body as to what the correct sleeping time is. This will result in you having to force yourself to go to bed even though you aren’t feeling sleepy. Also, if you work in shifts, you should try and work it out so that the shifts change every month and not every week. Changing your sleep pattern every week will not allow your body clock to settle. Wake up at the same time: With the tendency to sleep till late on weekends and holidays, it is important that we talk about this separately. Not having the same waking up time every day means that you will lose the ability to wake up on your own. Your body clock will get so confused that it won’t know when to wake you up. Waking up at the same time every day ensures that this does not happen. dark room: Your body clock depends on light and dark to know when it’s time to rest. If your room has a lot of light coming in, your body clock will confuse it for day and in the process, end up getting disrupted. So, draw the curtains and turn off all the lights while sleeping. The same logic applies to using a phone in bed as the bright screen will disrupt your body clock. no alcohol just before sleeping: The reason for this is that drinking just before you sleep will probably mean that you’ll wake up a few hours into your sleep feeling thirsty. A sound, uninterrupted sleep is what you need to keep your body clock in order. So, avoid drinking before you sleep.

« KNOW MORE: PAIN RELIEF SPRAYS VS. PAINKILLERS Wondering whether to use a pain reliever spray or pop a pill? Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you the difference between the two
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2013 Shutterstock

>> A seated lat pull down can damage your rotator cuff if not performed in the right manner
G
etting injured is bad enough, so thinking about whether to use a pain relieving spray or immediately pop a pill isn’t an easy decision. We speak to general physician, Dr. Amit Thadhani to help you make an informed choice.
what’S the difference?
To understand which one will work better for you, you first have to understand the difference between them. Dr. Amit says, “Pain relief sprays work on the principle of counter irritation. They cause a low grade irritation on the skin that masks the deep seated pain in your muscles and joints. Contrary to popular belief, there is no ‘deep action’ of sprays. On the other hand, pain reliever pills act through the blood and at the local nerve endings to block signals of pain emanating from the affected area.” Dr. Amit also tells us that the biggest problem is self-medicating painkillers and taking them without proper diagnosis for the pain. “It’s like covering up a dilapidated structure with nice paint to make it look better,” he adds.
Safe & effective
So, what’s more effective? Pills are physiologically more effective than sprays. But, as Dr. Amit says, excessive use can have significant side effects such as stomach ulcers, kidney and liver damage. On the other hand, sprays are safer because the action is localised. They’re efficacy for pain relief is low and you have to be careful where you use them. Dr. Amit explains, “If used on an inflamed area, sprays will aggravate the inflammation and worsen the condition due to increased congestion. So, using sprays on acutely injured parts and boils may be quite harmful.” While sprays are safer on the whole, no pain relief medication should be taken without proper diagnosis and prescription, so don’t go spraying away happily on the assumption that they’re safe enough to put whenever you’re injured.
the lowdown
Dr. Amit says that while most doctors prefer prescribing pills over sprays and think they’re more effective, it’s dangerous to self prescribe them. They both act in different ways, so there’s no harm using both together. If you’re in a lot of pain, a pill will help you better — but only take one when prescribed by your doctor.
WATCH OUT Some machines at the gym can be dangerous, especially if you’re a beginner. Dev Goswami tells you which ones you should avoid and brings you alternatives that will provide similar fitness results
W
ith rows and rows of machines and equipment that today’s gyms have, working out has become quite easy. All you need to do is pick a machine and do a few repetitions. Once you’re done, you move on to the next machine. However, the hiccup with gym machines is that they often make you perform movements that your body isn’t naturally designed to do. This puts you at risk of suffering from serious injuries. Here we tell you which machines are the top culprits when it comes to putting your body at risk and what alternate exercises you can do instead.
Seated leg preSS This is perhaps the most dangerous machine at the gym. It involves you lying on your back and pushing a platform that’s connected to weights, with your legs. It’s supposed to work on your quads, glutes and hamstrings. But, what makes it dangerous is that your knees and your back are under immense strain. It doesn’t activate your stabilisation muscles and so, puts you at risk of hurting your back or spraining your knees. alternative: Perform stiff-legged squats which will train the same muscles with less risk. Stand straight and hold a body bar in front of your thighs. Bend forward at your hips, keeping your back straight and knees bent. Stand back up and repeat.
Seated lat pull down
Seated leg extenSionS
This machine involves you pulling a bar attached to weights from over your head to behind your neck. The move which rotates your shoulder cuffs, is extremely tricky to perform correctly. It can cause pinching in your shoulder joint and can damage your rotator cuff. alternative: You can achieve the same benefits of working out your shoulders and your back by pulling the bar in front of your neck instead of behind it. Hold the bar a bit more than shoulder width apart and squeeze your shoulder blades together as you pull it down. Bring it till your collar bone and then go back to your starting position.
Unless you’re trying to develop superhuman powers, you really do not need this machine. It is because this machine makes your legs perform a movement they aren’t supposed to. This puts stress on the ligaments and tendons around your knees. alternative: One-legged, body-weight squats will work your quads just as well as this machine. Except, the movement will be more natural and hence, risk-free. Use a rail if you need to in the beginning until you can handle all your body weight on one leg.
ab roller This is one of the easiest machines to use but the problem with the ab roller is that you will more often than not, use all your muscles to perform the exercise except just your abs, like you’re actually supposed to. Since you’re using an equipment, you won’t even realise that you’re using your neck, back and legs instead of your stomach muscles. alternative: Stick to plain, old equipmentfree crunches. They will have the same effect. If you feel like you need to increase the intensity, you can do the crunches on an exercise ball.
olympic bench Surprised? This classic piece of gym equipment can be extremely difficult to use. We all have one arm that is stronger than the other. Due to this, you’re most probably not handling the bar properly — one wrong move and the barbell will land on your chest or neck. alternative: Regular push-ups will work out the same chest muscles that the Olympic bench will (increase intensity by putting weights on your back). However, you can still use the bench-press as long as you’re cautious. To be on the safer side, always have a trainer around when you’re using it to ensure maximum safety.

VERTIGO WOES
One of the major problems of vertigo is that the person suffering from it will brush it off as dizziness. Priyanka Singh tells how it can be dangerous if ignored
I
n August this year, Mumbai got its first vertigo clinic in Kohinoor Hospital. The need to set up a clinic dedicated to treating vertigo clearly indicates that this problem is on the rise. As much as 20 to 30% of the adult population suffers from vertigo and there is hardly any proper medication, treatment and means to carry out proper diagnosis. We tell you all about vertigo and why dizziness and vertigo are not interchangeable.
What is vertigo? Vertigo is a feeling of spinning that is sometimes accompanied by nausea and vomiting. However, people tend not to use that word to describe their symptoms and instead use the word dizziness or light-headedness. Dizziness can be divided into two types: lightheadedness or vertigo. Lightheadedness is the feeling that you might faint, while vertigo is most often described as a spinning sensation with loss of balance.
What causes vertigo?
>> Patients of vertigo experience a spinning sensation where they lose their sense of balance
Vertigo can be caused by several factors and conditions. The following are the most common causes of vertigo: BPPv: Benign positional paroxysmal vertigo (BPPV) is a disorder of the inner ear and the most common form of vertigo. The cause is usually unknown, but an upper respiratory tract infection or a minor blow to the head may be responsible. This type of vertigo occurs abruptly when you move your head up and down, turn over in bed, or move your head to one side. Sufferers can usually describe specific head movements that trigger it. Symptoms can be distressing, but they usually fade in 30-60 seconds. Avoiding positions that bring this on may reduce its occurrence. Labyrinthitis: This also refers to a variety of conditions within the inner ear. It may be associated with inflammation, an upper respiratory infection or nerve deterioration, but it often occurs independently of other problems. Vertigo is a result of that.
« KNOW MORE: TUBAL BLOCKAGES Tubal blockages are on the rise in India. Rhea Dhanbhoora gives you the lowdown
I
nfertility is on the rise for several reasons, including stress, chaotic lifestyles and environmental factors. Tubal blockage, a cause of infertility, is also on the rise at an alarming rate. Studies show that around 18 million Indian women suffer from tubal blockages and it’s the reason for 20-25% of infertility cases in the country. We speak to Dr. Kaustubh Kulkarni, clinical director and co-founder of Siddhi Life Assisted Reproduction Centre to find out more.
What is it?
Tubal blockages are caused by unhygienic surgeries, sexually
transmitted diseases and infections. The two fallopian tubes lead from your ovaries to your uterus and are important because they are responsible for sperm passage, fertilisation, embryo storage, nourishment and transport. So, it’s no wonder that when they are blocked or damaged, the reproductive functions are adversely affected. It’s also termed as tubal factor infertility.
hoW is it resPoNsiBLe?
You could get a tubal blockage as a result of an ectopic pregnancy, sexually communicated disease or genital tuberculosis. Even pelvic
surgeries and abortions can lead to blocked tubes. Dr. Kulkarni says, “Tubal damage is responsible for 15–17% of sub-fertility in western countries, but the prevalence is higher in India due to 25 to 35% of unrecognised pelvic inflammatory diseases (PID) and tuberculosis. Suffering patients experience difficulty in conceiving, with many even becoming infertile. Assisted reproductive options such as in vitro fertilisation are then the sought after solution to get pregnant.”
diagNoses & treatmeNt
Certain blockages can be detected and surgically removed. If the tubal
block is advanced, you probably won’t be able to have a natural delivery but you can opt for IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation). Dr. Kulkarni says, “IVF completely bypasses the tubal block as the egg is artificially removed and fertilised outside the body. With innovative, patient friendly hormone delivery devices, IVF is convenient yet safe for conception.” The success rate of IVF is 30-40%.
steer cLear
To avoid tubal blockages, you should be hygienic, practice safe sex and get prompt tests to check the fallopian tube integrity before things go wrong.
Nervous
system
disorders:
Central nervous system disorders that can cause vertigo as a symptom include multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, neck injuries, certain forms of migraines, acoustic neuroma, cerebellar and brain stem tumours and TIAS (transient ischemic attacks).
symPtoms of vertigo In addition to a sensation of disorientation or motion, the individual may also experience nausea or vomiting, sweating profusely and abnormal eye movements during a vertigo attack. The person may also have hearing loss or a ringing sensation in their ears, visual disturbances, weakness, difficulty speaking, a decreased level of consciousness and difficulty walking. The duration of symptoms can vary from minutes to hours and symptoms may be constant or episodic. The onset may be due to a movement or change in position. It is important to tell the doctor about any recent head trauma or whiplash injury as well as any new medications the affected individual is taking.
WheN to see a doctor? Any symptoms of vertigo should be evaluated by a doctor, even though the majority of cases are harmless. Although vertigo can be debilitating, most causes are easily treated with prescription medication. Have a doctor check any new signs of vertigo to rule out rare, potentially serious or life-threatening causes. Certain signs and symptoms of vertigo may require evaluation in a hospital’s emergency department, such as double vision, headache, weakness, difficulty speaking, abnormal eye movements, altered level of consciousness, difficulty walking, lack of coordination or weakness of the arms and/or legs. Treatment of vertigo depends on the diagnosis and a complete medical evaluation is recommended. This can reveal the true cause and suggest solutions based on treating the underlying disorder.

There are several surprising things that can cause impaired vision and damage your eyesight. Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you what to watch out for...
R
ubbing your eyes vigorously, wearing contact lenses overnight and not taking proper care of your eyes are well known triggers that could lead to eye damage, but there are a few surprising things that can hamper your vision too. Read on so that you know how to keep yourself protected:
eye to eye Even if you like sharing things, make sure your generosity stops when it comes to eye makeup. While cheap eye makeup can damage your vision, sharing it can do even more harm. You can suffer from several serious diseases if an infection spreads back and forth from one eye to the next and the main culprit for this is mascara. You could also suffer from an infection if you use your mascara for longer than the recommended period of time. False eyelashes can also damage your eyes even if a little glue gets in.
makeup on the go Are you used to applying kohl in the car or swiping colour on your lashes while walking out the door? Stop! It’s not worth the risk. You could damage your eye if your hand slips or you scratch your eye with the mascara wand.
through a lens While most lenses are correctional, certain cosmetic lenses are bad — especially circle lenses. These lenses rose to popularity in Asia and make your eyes look bigger and rounder, but it’s rare that they are good quality. Infections from the wrong type of lens can be extremely dangerous for your eyes.
look up! But, only when your eyes are properly protected with sunglasses, or when the sun has set. Damage from UV rays can cause cataracts and put you at risk of blindness.
up in smoke If you don’t want permanent smoky vision, stay away from smoke. Whether it’s smoke or construction (in a city like Mumbai, we’re all unfortunately exposed to some degree of this) your eyes are at risk. Remember to avoid heavily polluted areas, barbeques and bonfires and wash your eyes often.
Bike it We all love the occasional bike ride, but make sure that you wear a helmet when you’re riding. The debris that flies up from the road can enter your eyes even if you don’t realise it, damaging your retina and hampering your vision.
Drink up We’re kidding. In fact, you should start moderating how much alcohol you drink. Eating healthy can prevent a host of degenerative eye conditions and diseases.

Dear Barbara, I have ingrown hair on my legs, so I feel too conscious to wear shorts or skirts. I’m getting married in a month and leaving for my honeymoon straight after. I really need to get rid of my ingrowths quickly, otherwise I’ll be stuck wearing jeans and tights throughout my honeymoon. What can I do to get rid of them? — sheila mehta, mira road Dear sheila, Several women suffer from ingrown hair. This occurs when the hair curls back on itself and starts growing back into the follicle, or when a strand of hair fails to grow out of the follicle and stays
embedded in the skin. Ingrown hairs are stubborn and hard to get rid off, but nothing is impossible. Exfoliate your skin with a good body wash regularly. You can also massage your skin regularly, lightly with a pumice stone. Keeping your skin moisturised is of utmost importance. Also, avoid wearing tight jeans and pants. Dear Barbara, I have always shaved my underarms as I found waxing too painful. Now I feel like I’ve made a big mistake because my underarm skin has become very dark. Is shaving the culprit behind this or are there any other factors to be

considered? Also, how do I get rid of the dark skin? — maya shetty, santacruz Dear maya, Darker skin can be caused by inflammation because of excess shaving, friction against material or a buildup of dead skin cells. To lighten it, try exfoliating. If that doesn’t work, you can try using a depilatory or laser treatment instead of shaving. A lotion containing hydroquinone might lighten the area, but you should consult a dermatologist if you have sensitive skin. Send your questions to: healthandfitness@afternoondc.in

Errors of judgement different from criminal acts, says PM

ew Delhi: Maintaining that economic growth implies greater opportunity for corruption, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh yesterday told CBI it was important that errors of judgement were distinguished from criminal acts. With his government’s image battered by a series of graft allegations including in the coal scam that has even sought to draw PMO into its
vortex, he said some decisions which appear sensible at the time of being taken may turn out to be faulty later. “Our administrative set up has to be so managed that the fear of the unknown must not lead to paralysis in decision making,” he said inaugurating an international conference organised by CBI on its Golden Jubilee celebrations. In the public debate on
corruption in India, Singh said, it is sometimes forgotten that economic growth also implies greater opportunity for corruption. “It is important that we look at the issue of corruption in the correct perspective. While we must maintain utmost vigilance in preventing corruption and do our utmost in ensuring transparency, accountability and probity in public life, it is
also important to ensure that the work of nation building goes on at a reasonably fast pace,” he said. CBI Director Ranjit Sinha, in his speech, however, said while there is a need for fast economic growth necessitating quick decisions on exploitation of natural resources, the challenge for policy makers is to do in a manner that there is no scope for impropriety. President Pranab Mukherjee lights a lamp to inaugurate the 40th Jawaharlal Nehru National Science, Mathematics & Environment Exhibition for Children in East Sikkim on Monday. Sikkim Governor Shriniwas Patil (2nd L), CM Pawan Chamling and MoS for HRD Shashi Tharoor are also seen.
BSP MP, wife sent to 4-day judicial CBI ‘hoodwinking’ in RTI activist custody in maid murder case Jethwa’s murder probe: SC N
ew Delhi: BSP MP Dhananjay Singh and his wife Jagriti, arrested in connection with the murder of their maid, were yesterday remanded to four-day judicial custody by a court here after the Delhi Police said they are waiting for some reports and will confront the accused with them later. Dhananjay, BSP MP from Jaunpur constituency in Uttar Pradesh, and Jagriti, a dental surgeon at the R M L Hospital here, were produced before Metropolitan Magistrate Gomati Manocha on expiry of their five days’ police custody. Dhananjay and Jagriti were arrested on November 5 in connection with the death of their 35-year-old maid Rakhi Bhadra, a resident of West Bengal. The police moved an application seeking four-day judicial custody of both the accused saying their further police custody may be required to confront them with Digital Video Recorders
(DVRs) which have been sent to forensic science laboratory (FSL) in Rohini here for examination as well as for expert opinion. Additional Public Prosecutor Mukul Kumar told the court that the forensic experts require some time to retrieve the data of DVRs, which were provided by Dhananjay to the police, and they might take custody of the accused later on to confront them with the reports and opinions. The magistrate allowed the police’s plea and sent both the accused to judicial custody till November 15. During the proceedings, Dhananjay moved an application seeking bail and the court directed the police to file its response on November 15, the date on which it will hear the plea. The prosecutor told the court that at this stage, the accused need to be sent to judicial custody as some more evidence will be collected during this period.
N
ew Delhi: The Supreme Court yesterday said the CBI was “hoodwinking” the procedure in its investigation into the murder of RTI activist Amit Bhikabhai Jethwa in which Gujarat BJP MP Dinubhai Boghabhai Solanki was arrested after being summoned as a witness. “You are hoodwinking,” a bench comprising justices S.S. Nijjar and F.M.I. Kalifulla said after CBI counsel maintained that Solanki, who was called for questioning here, was arrested as there must have been material against him. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the two-time MP, said that he was called for questioning and arrested when his plea challenging the Gujarat High Court order for the CBI probe was pending in the apex court. Further, he submitted that Solanki has also sought quashing of the summon to
appear as witness in the case. He said the sitting MP is in CBI custody for six days and he should be released from the hands of the agency and sent to judicial custody. However, the bench said it will hear the matter and seek CBI’s stand on Friday. The apex court in March had said, “The CBI may continue with its investigation, as directed, and complete such investigation, but the result of the investigation should be kept in a sealed cover.” A Delhi court on November 6 had granted a two-day transit remand to CBI to take the arrested BJP MP to Ahmedabad in connection with murder of Jethwa who had waged a crusade against illegal mining in Gir Forest, home of Asiatic lions. Solanki, Lok Sabha member from Junagadh, was arrested on November 5 after he joined the investigation at CBI headquarters.

Cadila Healthcare reported disappointing set of numbers in Q2FY14 on the domestic formulations & margins front, however export formulations reported strong growth. Net sales & EBITDA up 13% whereas EBITDA margins came in flat YoY at 14.9% whereas QoQ it saw a drop of 260 bps (margin impacted due to low growth & contribution from domestic business, high margin JV business de-growing & exports not realized at higher rate due to hedges amounting to losses). Q1FY14 EBITDA margin at 17.5%. PAT grew by 92.7% (due to MAT credit taken). EPS in Q2FY14 came in at Rs. 9 vs Rs. 4.6 in Q2FY13. H1FY14 EPS at Rs. 18.5 vs our FY14E EPS at Rs. 38.8. Wellness gross sales grew by 7.7% (Sugarfree grew - 44% but Nutralite, Everyuth & Acti-life not doing well). The company expects growth to pick up in Q3 led by increased promotional activities but 20%+ growth expected to take 2 more quarters. EBIDTA margin came in at 26.1% vs 26.9% in Q2FY13. PAT grew by 6.7% to Rs.252 mn. Outlook & Valuation: Q2FY14 continued being a challenging quarter for Cadila with pressure on margins on account of low growth & contribution from domestic business, high margin JV business de-growing & exports not realized at higher rate due to hedges amounting to losses. However, we believe, the sluggishness in the domestic formulation space is expected to recover with the resolution of trade related issues coupled with better visibility in the export markets such as US (ramp up expected in approval rates from the USFDA, launch guidance improved to 20+ over the next 12-15 months in the US), JV sales (some more products added under Hospira JV likely be launched in 2015), aggressively targeting emerging markets like Brazil and the CIS region. We maintain a BUY rating on the stock (TP of Rs 860) with FY15 expected to be a year of change in fortunes for the company with faster approvals in US & domestic market getting back to strong growth.
Prabhudas Lilladher calls a ‘Buy’ on Voltas CMP: Rs. 90 Target Rs. 100
Voltas reported Adj. PAT of Rs 423m, up 49% YoY, which was better than ours and street estimates, largely driven by higher other income and improved margin performance in the EPS/UCP segment. Margin in the MEP segment continued to be subdued due to issues in international projects. We believe, given the prospects of improved ordering from international market, company’s effort to pick up better margin order and leadership changes across important verticles, will benefit in the medium/long term. Healthy balance sheet and cash flow gives us additional comfort. We maintain ‘Accumulate’ on the stock. Outlook and Valuation: The stock is trading at 11xFY14E earnings. We believe the near-term outlook on earnings is likely to be subdued, given the challenging environment for UCP businesses and weak margin outlook for FY14 for the MEP segment. However, given the prospects of improved ordering from international market, company’s effort to pick-up better margin order and leadership changes across important verticles will benefit in the medium/long term. Healthy balance sheet and cash flow gives us additional comfort. We maintain ‘Accumulate’ on the stock with a target price of Rs 100.
ICICI Securities calls a ‘Buy’ on Tata Motors CMP: Rs. 377 Target Rs. 475
Tata Motors (TML) has announced its Q2FY14 results, which were a significant beat on the margins and profitability front. The consolidated topline at ~Rs 56,800 crore was ahead of estimates while reported PAT at ~Rs 3,541 crore also beat the Street. JLR’s EBITDA margins at 17.8% (I-direct estimate: 16.9%) rose 300 bps YoY on a strong product/geography mix and annual incentives received in the quarter. The domestic business posted losses of ~Rs 800 crore, as revenues, margins shrunk to Rs 8800 crore, 2.0%, respectively. However, with JLR business drivers strongly in motion, we are not too worried about the weakness in the standalone business. We believe JLR’s volumes will grow ~16%, ~13% in H2FY14E, FY15E, respectively as new product launches and strong growth in China and US continues. Margins are also expected to remain on the upswing as the favourable impact of Jaguar volumes plays a part. We have continued to remain bullish on JLR’s business performance and value it at 4x EV/EBITDA. With some uptick in the India business, going ahead, the drag on the overall performance will also reduce. Despite the 45% YTD run-up in the stock price, we feel JLR valuations still remain significantly subdued compared to peers like BMW and Audi. The drag on profitability of the domestic business will reduce whenever the demand scenario improves in India. We maintain BUY and enhance our TP to Rs 475. However, with higher valuation upside in preference shares, we would advise all our portfolio investors to add Tata Motors DVR.

In the third quarter, over 33 % respondents reported higher order books for October-December 201213 as compared with 31 % in the sector quarter of 2012-13. “The above outlook is also borne out by the fact that recently both IIP and Index of Eight Core Industries have shown some upturn in growth,â€? it said. Around 33 % respondents reported plans for capacity addition in the next six months as compared with 28 % in the previous survey. However, except a few sectors such as leather, where majority of the firms plan to add new capacities, in other sectors only a few companies had any new capacity addition plans, the survey said. “This indicates that investment will not pick up at least in the next two to three months,â€? it added. Around 70 % respondents do not expect to hire new workforce in next three months indicating that investors may still be wary of expansion plans. Around 34 % respondents reported that their capacity utilization was higher in the third quarter vis-Ă -vis last year.
India Targets $2.3 Billion Asset Sales In PSUs By Year-End By A Business Reporter
I
ndia has revived plans to sell stakes in two state-owned companies to raise about $2.3 billion to boost public finances, aiming to push through a sale by mid-December to take advantage of a share market rally. Two sources with direct knowledge of the matter said investor road shows will be launched in the United States on Tuesday for a 10 % stake in state refiner Indian Oil Corp (IOC). The government’s Department of Disinvestment (DoD), which oversees stake sales in state companies, has also completed most of the overseas road shows to sell a 5% stake in state miner Coal India, which could fetch about $1.5 billion, the sources told PTI.
The department hopes to launch the stake sales in the two state companies before December 15, they said, after which overseas investors typically start to wind down for Christmas and New Year holidays. “We would like to launch both before mid-December, but not sure if we will be able to do that, one of the sources said. The government’s planned sale of stakes in Indian Oil and other state companies including Coal India is critical to relieving pressure on public finances that could put the country’s investmentgrade credit rating at risk. India has targeted raising $6.4 billion from selling stakes in state companies in the fiscal year ending March 2014, but has so far managed only $233 million, as ministries squabbled over the timing of the is-
sues and the rupee fell against the dollar. IOC’s share sale had been set for October, but planned road shows were cancelled after the oil ministry pulled out, citing the weak share price and uncertainty over a new fuel-subsidy formula. The Coal India stake sale has been halved from 10 %t to 5 % after union opposition.
BUSINESS BRIEFS Sebi Needs To Step Up Criminal Enforcement: ESMA
European market watchdog ESMA has lauded Sebi for developing a robust surveillance and enforcement system but has called for a stepped-up criminal enforcement framework for capital market violations in India. A 122-page report by European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has noted that the legal authority of Sebi (Securities and Exchange Board of India) has been strengthened and it now has “broad regulatory, licensing, investigation, supervision and enforcement powers. Based on such strong legal framework Sebi has also developed robust regulations for different types of market participants and RSEs (Recognised Stock Exchange), ESMA said.
L&T Infra Finance Warns Public Against ‘Unscrupulous’ Entities
L&T Infrastructure Finance Company warned investors against ‘unscrupulous’ entities collecting money from them with promise of high returns on behalf of the company. “...Some unscrupulous persons/firms/establishments are misusing the goodwill and reputation of the company and collecting deposits in cash under the identification/ similar trade name/trade logo as that of the company, thereby seeking to create false association with the company, L&T Infra Finance said in a public notice. “They have been issuing fake receipts in the name of the company thereby luring the public and under the pretext of giving unreasonably high returns receiving deposits in the name of the company, it added. L&T Infra Finance clarified that it is not collecting funds in any manner and has not authorised any entity for raising funds on its behalf. It said the company has no connection with these entities who are taking advantage of gullible people.
Govt Likely To Allow Doubling Of Kg-D6 Gas Price
In a breather to RIL, the government is likely to allow doubling of price of gas from its KG-D6 block provided the company gives bank guarantees that can be encashed if proved that the energy major was hoarding gas.The Oil Ministry had in a draft note to the Cabinet proposed that RIL be forced to sell gas from Dhirubhai-1 and 3 (D1&D3) gas fields in KG-D6 block at current rate of USD 4.2 till it is proved that the over 80 % fall output was due to natural reasons, or the firm makes up for producing less than target since 2010-11. However, the glitch in the plan was how the government would make up for the difference between the current rate of USD 4.2 per million British thermal unit and the new rate of almost USD 8.4 that is to become applicable for all domestic gas from April 1 next year, if at a later date it is proved that the fall in output was actually due to geological reasons and RIL was not hoarding gas.
Rising Inflation, Falling Rupee Hit Fortune Of India’s Richest
Rising inflation and falling rupee seem to have hit the fortune of India’s 100 richest people, but they have still managed to beat the growth in Indian stock market valuation. Though the total wealth of India’s 100 richest people grew by a modest 3 % from the year ago period to USD 259 billion, the elite group of entrepreneurs have beaten the BSE market cap’s growth over the last five years, as per the latest Forbes India Rich List. “The growth in wealth might have been lacklustre due to India’s stumbling economy, which has been hit by inflation and a falling rupee, Forbes India said. — Business Desk with inputs from PTI
Inflows Through Special Swap Windows Touch $17.5 Bn: RBI By A Business Reporter

he Reserve Bank said it has received USD 17.5 billion so far through the two special windows for swapping foreign currency nonresident (banks) deposits and overseas foreign currency borrowings by banks. The central bank operationalised these special windows on September 4 to prop the rupee which had fallen close to 30% between April and August. The window will remain open till November 30.The special widow allows banks to swap the fresh FCNR (B) dollar
funds, mobilised for a minimum tenor of three years and over, at a fixed rate of 3.5 per cent per annum for the tenor of the deposit. The RBI also allowed banks to borrow up to 100 % of tier I capital from overseas, which can be swapped with the central bank at a concessional rate of 100 basis points below the ongoing swap rate prevailing in the market. The rupee has gained nearly 11% from September till date on account of higher dollar inflows and other measures taken by the RBI and the government.

he simple ritual of lighting a lamp in Diwali lightens up the atmosphere and there is a spirit of celebration all around. Surprisingly, this is one festival which does not find a reflection in our music. Once the late Kumar Gandharva, the most creative singers of modern times, told this singer/writer that the very fact that there did not exist a single composition in the repertoire of Hindustani music on the joys of the Diwali festival showed how a vast gulf separated music and life. Kumar himself wrote and composed a beautiful bandish in the Raga Dhan Basanti which is a combination of 'Puriya Dhanashri' and 'Basant'. 'Shubh Ghadi Deepaki Jyot Jare' talks about the connection between the auspiciousness of the occasion and the act of lighting a lamp. The happy and celebratory nature of the festival is conducive to
well. I chose Sameer Vidhwans to direct the play because he is one of the most talented directors around and has directed many critically appreciated plays and films and I am sure that he will do justice to the play”.
She also credits the co-producer Dinu Pednekar with his able knowledge and backing to help her in her first production. Reema said that she liked the subject of the play and immediately agreed to do it as also Mukta and Sameer make a great team. Director Sameer Vidhwans says that Mukta shares a good comfort level with him as she has worked with him in many plays and films and that helps in making the play more interesting for the audiences. Mukta adds that she is still doing the performances of her popular play ‘Final Draft’ but she believes in doing good and selective work. The play produced by Rasika and Anamika will have its premiere performance in December.

UMBAI: Shaking off an uncertain start Maharashtra’s Heena Sidhu shot her way to glory in the ISSF World Cup Finals in Munich,Germany on Sunday. She became the first ever Indian to win a Gold medal in the 10 metre Pistol Shooting competition by beating reigning world champion Zorana Arunovic of Serbia by 5.2 points. Earlier in the qualifying stage she finished a creditable third with a tally of 384 points behind multiple Olympic medalist Olena Kostevych but ahead of double Olympic Champion Guo Wenjun of China and the Serbian Zorana whom she ultimately beat in the final. Heena was a bit apprehensive going into the final round as she was unfamiliar with the format which had been the cause of her finishing eighth in the World Cups in Korea and Germany in April and May. On Sunday she started with a score of 9.3 each with her first two shots resulting in her getting relegated to 8th position. But conquering her nerves she then shot 15 consecutive 10s to win the competition by a massive margin of 5.2 points. She tallied 203.8 to Zorana Arunovic’s 198.6 points. The third place went to four time Olympian Viktoria Chaika of Belarus with a total of 176.8 points. Heena was destined to create history. She had made it to the competition only because three shooters withdrew owing to various reasons. Having managed to getting a visa and also book a flight to Munich within two days she reached in time for the competition. Determined to grab this opportunity and prove her class she shot well in the qualifiers, unmindful of the running about she had to do before finally landing in Munich. Her commitment and strong will power
AIMING FOR GOLD: Heena Sidhu is a model of concentration as she trains her sights on gold. helped her enter the annals of the history of Indian Shooting. Earlier Rifle shooters Anjali Bhagwat (2002) and Gagan Narang (2008) had brought laurels by winning gold in ISSF World Cup Finals. Her previous best was a gold medal partnering Annu Raj Singh in the Womens pairs 10 mt. Air Pistol at the Commonwealth Games (2010) in Delhi. She had trained for the competition in Pune for over a month under the watchful eyes of Ronak Pandit, a Commonwealth Gold medalist to whom she is married. She had shifted from Patiala to Mumbai early this year after marriage. Heena benefited from the training
received from Anatolii Piddubnyi who guides her on technique while Ronak works on her tactics and match strategy. Ronak’s role is to help her handle match pressure according to veteran shooter Ashok Pandit (Arjuna Awardee). Ashok is Ronak’s father and was responsible in shaping his son’s career. According to the new ISSF rules the qualification score is not considered for the finals. The medal match starts from zero. After the eighth shot in the finals and thereafter every two shots, the last placed competitor is eliminated from the match.
England not too Clarke says Test team a ‘no-brainer’ old, says Swann S
S
YDNEY: Ageing off-spinner Graeme Swann insisted today that England are not too old to defend the Ashes, saying the team’s mix of youth and experience is an asset. More than half of the touring side to Australia are older than 30, including key players Ian Bell (31), James Anderson (31), Kevin Pietersen (33) and Swann (34). But Swann, who has 248 Test wickets from 57 matches, said any “Dad’s Army” jibes were misplaced. “I don’t think we need to worry about the age of the team — I think I’m the oldest,” he said on the England and Wales Cricket Board website. “It’s not like we’re all pushing the boundaries. If the oldest player is that age, it’s not like you’re all ready for the Home Guard yet.” Yorkshire trio Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow and Gary Ballance, Durham all-rounder Ben Stokes and Steven Finn add a youthful edge to the squad and Swann said: “I think we’ve got an exciting blend of youth and experience at the minute. “That’s one of the reasons why I’m confident going into this Ashes series.” Swann revealed that England’s tofu and goji-infused diet, which Australian media attacked when the dietary demands became known on Friday, was partly motivated by the ageing squad. “Some of us have to take it quite seriously because we’re getting on a bit, and if we don’t eat healthily we tend to pile on the pounds,” he said.
YDNEY: Confident captain Michael Clarke said today there will be no surprises in Australia’s team for the first Ashes Test with players in such good form they were “no brainer” selections. Australia are due to announce tomorrow a 13-man squad for the opening clash against England from November 21 and Clarke likes what he has seen so far in the recent one-day tour of India and Sheffield Shield games. “We are in a good place,” he said as he launched his book, The Ashes Diary, in Sydney after attending a Remembrance Day service with England captain Alastair Cook. “I honestly think that if they pick 12 players, then 11 of them are no-brainers for Test number one at the Gabba. “I would imagine the majority pick themselves from the form they have displayed in all forms of the game,” added Clarke. “The exciting thing about where we are at right now, whether it be batters or bowlers, individual players have stepped up and performed.” Australia’s position is in stark contrast to the Ashes tour of England earlier this year when their preparations were badly disrupted after coach Mickey Arthur was sacked just 18 days out from the first Test and opening batsman
David Warner was suspended for ill discipline. Clarke said all the players in contention for the five-Test series had done exactly what coach Darren Lehmann had asked of them as they attempt to reverse their 3-0 defeat in England and prevent their old rivals winning a fourth successive Ashes. “Whether it be in the one-day format in India, the Ryobi Cup or the Sheffield Shield, the players have picked themselves which is a really impressive thing for our team,” he said. “And it is what Darren Lehmann and myself asked the guys to do: go back to state cricket and take wickets and score runs to be in the front of the selectors’ minds.”

IN BRIEF Armstrong pleads for fair treatment
LONDON: Disgraced cycling champion Lance Armstrong has said he will co-operate in a bid to discover the extent of doping in the sport so long as he’s treated the same as his fellow drug cheats. “If everyone gets the ‘death penalty’, then I’ll take the ‘death penalty’,” said Armstrong in an interview with the BBC World Service. “If everyone gets a free pass, I’m happy to take a free pass. If everyone gets six months, then I’ll take my six months,” added the 42year-old. After years of denials, cancer-survivor Armstrong — who has been stripped of his record seven Tour de France titles won between 1999-to-2005 — finally admitted in January he’d used performanceenhancing drugs in an interview with US television personality Oprah Winfrey.
ISS crew returns safely to Earth with Olympic torch
MOSCOW: Three astronauts returned to Earth today, following a 166-day mission, bringing the Olympic torch back from the International Space Station after a historic space walk. The trip completes the most ambitious leg of Russia’s unparallelled torch relay in the run-up to the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi next February. Russian cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin, NASA US astronaut Karen Nyberg and Italian colleague Luca Parmitano, descended in the Soyuz capsule to touch down at 2:49 GMT on the frosty steppes of Kazakhstan. The torch, kept unlit throughout its space journey due to safety precautions, was securely wrapped during the descent, and an employee of Russia’s space agency Roscosmos took it out of the packaging.

HENNAI: The much-hyped World Chess Championship clash between Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen might have started with a whimper with two draws in as many games but things can only get better as the match progresses and some exciting tussle could be in store. Understandably, rival players try to weigh each other in the initial stages of any world championship match and that seemed to be happening between defending champion Anand and young challenger Carlsen also. If the first game showed five-time champion Anand at his best theoretically, Norwegian Carlsen gave it back in the second. Clearly, world number one Carlsen was trying to provoke Anand to go for some wild com-
Defiant Federer upbeat despite year to forget
L
ONDON: Roger Federer insists tennis is in his DNA and that he has no intention of quitting after his worst season came to a downbeat conclusion with a semifinal defeat against Rafael Nadal at the ATP World Tour Finals. Federer has endured a dismal campaign marred by a series of shock defeats and the 17-time Grand Slam champion was unable to finish on a high note as world number one Nadal sent him crashing out of the season-ending event with a 7-5 6-3 victory yesterday. After reigning over men’s tennis for the best part of a decade, the 32-year-old is undeniably a fading force, prompting some to suggest he may consider hanging up his racquet to focus on life as a father of twin daughters. But Federer is adamant that is not an option just yet because his love of the sport remains too strong. “For me, it’s pretty simple: this is what I used to do as a little boy. It’s something that always is there in your DNA,” Federer said. “Clearly today it’s different than when I was 12 years old, but it’s just something I enjoy doing. The thing is that when you stop, you’re still so young that why stop so early? Why just walk away from it because I have many other things to do in my life than play tennis, but because I can still choose, I pick to play. As long as I have this choice, I’ll keep on playing.” Federer, troubled by a back injury in the first half of the campaign, claims his lack of success over the last 11 months is more down to his body failing him than a lack of hunger. “Considering the back issues I’ve had, I’m pleased that I’m pain-free for a long period of time now with a lot of tennis,” he said. “That’s definitely going to give me confidence physically and mentally.”
plexities but the vastly experienced Indian ace who has been in similar situations before, avoided any complications.
Anand has been part of many world championship title clashes while Carlsen would have had to train himself to find a fitting shoe.
Against Vladimir Kramnik in 2008, the first two games were drawn like here. Against Boris Gelfand, the first six ended in draws but against Veselin Topalov things were hot right from the start as the Bulgarian won the first game itself. In all these matches Anand won in the end. In 1995 though, in the match against Garry Kasparov of Russia, Anand faced three different first moves in the first four black games. The fourth one also was a shift as Kasparov went for the Scotch opening from the Ruy Lopez. Then, Kasparov found a flaw in one of the prepared positions and won the 10th game in great style. Anand’s victory in ninth game proved inconsequential in the 20game match as Kasparov’s win had a great psychological impact. Anand was no match and lost it by the 18th game itself.
After a rest day today, Anand will play with black pieces in third game tomorrow. The players will play two games on the trot followed by a rest day till 10th game and for the last two games, there is a rest day after each game. Chances are that Anand’s team will now get down to business in the Caro Kann defense. It seemed that’s where they have to strike it seems. And, as Anand said “not much attention was paid to it” earlier. Carlsen’s first white gave nothing away. He has started with something inconsequential. Probably, he did that to check what has Anand done against the mundane. Expectedly, Carlsen now knows that Anand has paid attention to those details. The Norwegian may shift to something more ‘Classical’ in the next game. And, chances are also bright that Anand will hold the fort together in the next one too.
Force India train eyes on fifth place A
USTIN (USA): Having regained the momentum with 15 points in the last two races, an ambitious Sahara Force India are now looking to snatch fifth place from McLaren as Formula one caravan has reached its penultimate destination of the season. With 18 points separating the two teams in the constructors’ championship, Force India are looking forward to a strong show at this week’s United States Grand Prix. “We’re certainly in better shape, but will never take anything for granted. Now have some breathing space behind us. But we won’t change our approach heading to Austin. We will go there focussed on closing the gap to fifth place, which is just 18 points,” Team Principal Vijay Mallya said. Paul Di Resta, who has scored 12 points in the last two races, said
“these results are a massive boost for everyone at Sahara Force India.” It’s great to have a race there, especially at such an impressive facility. I still remember the huge crowd
that came to the race last year and the amazing atmosphere. The place was absolutely packed and the whole city was very enthusiastic about Formula One. We go there
with high hopes and will try and build on the performance of Abu Dhabi. The Scot said he likes the track in Austin, specially the sector one. “Sector one stands out for me. It’s very similar to theMaggots and Becketts sequence at Silverstone and the fast chicanes work the car and tyres really hard. It’s a very enjoyable part of the lap and those corners really show you the potential of a Formula One car. The rest of the lap is quite open with a great flow. A lot of the corners are offcamber, too, which adds another challenge,” Di Resta said. Adrian Sutil has not driven on the Circuit of The Americas as he missed out 2012 F1 season but the German driver says he has heard nice things about it, so he was looking forward to racing there for first time.
It’s Djokovic vs Nadal in title showdown L
ONDON: Novak Djokovic set up a final showdown with Rafael Nadal as the defending champion cruised to a 6-3 6-3 victory over Stanislas Wawrinka in the semi-finals of the ATP World Tour Finals here. Djokovic extended his winning streak since the US Open to 21 matches and will bid for his third Tour Finals crown when he faces world number one Nadal in the final at London’s O2 Arena. After losing out to Nadal in the race to finish the year top of the world rankings, world number two Djokovic has a golden opportunity to get a measure of revenge against the Spaniard. The Serb has now won his last nine matches at the O2 Arena and will seek to avenge his recent US Open final defeat against Nadal, who holds a 22-16 edge in their 38 meetings. “It was a very enjoyable match for me, it was my best per-
formance at the tournament so far,” said Djokovic yesterday. “I don’t think it’s the right word to say I’m unbeatable. Nobody’s unbeatable. Being in the moment and taking it one step at a time helps me keep my focus.” Wawrinka had enjoyed his best season over the last 11 months and, after advancing to the last four on his maiden appearance at the Tour Finals, the Swiss seventh seed was bidding to become the first debutant to reach the final since David Ferrer in 2007. But Djokovic had won the last 14 of his 16 meetings withWawrinka dating back to 2006, including nine of their 10 clashes on hard courts. Two of those victories were among the most enthralling matches of 2013, with Djokovic emerging victorious from five-set encounters with Wawrinka in the Australian Open fourth round and US Open semi-finals, but this rou-
tine win never threatened to reach those breathtaking standards. Wawrinka showed no signs of nerves in the early stages and earned the first two break points of the match in Djokovic’s second service game The Serb got out of trouble once, but Wawrinka
pounced at the second attempt, racing to the net to punch home a volley and take a 2-1 lead. Djokovic produced a typically defiant response as he pressured Wawrinka into conceding a break point in the next game and took it when the Swiss missed his forehand.

UMBAI: His undiluted commitment to the game is known to all and sundry, and what’s more, the man always finds a way out of all sorts of adversities. Sachin Tendulkar in his address during the naming of the Kandivili Sports Facility as ‘the Sachin Tendulkar Gymkhana’ said in the days without modern facilities like indoor nets, he would play on wet wickets in various playgrounds around the city. He said that clubs like the MCA Bandra-Kurla Complex were good in recent few years due to the indoor nets which allowed him to practice throughout the year. “Few years ago there wasn’t a MCA BKC club. And practising in the

monsoons was tough because there were no indoor nets, so I used to go out to the playgrounds and practice even while it was raining with my friends. When the MCA Bandra facility was built, the facility of indoor nets became available to us at any time. I thank them for making the nets available to me at any odd hour. All I had to do was to make one odd phone call and say that I was coming now. Without that preparation, things wouldn’t have been the same,” said Tendulkar at the event on Monday evening. Speaking about his association with the Mumbai Cricket Association spanning 29 years, Tendulkar said the association gave him all the support from playing on different pitches to providing him different bowlers so that he could prepare himself at both the national and the international level. “My association with Mumbai cricket started almost 29 years ago when I played in the under 15 tournament and from there on it has been a fantastic journey. Wherever and whenever I wanted to practice, MCA made sure I had the facilities and I had the right pitches and the right bowlers to practice to prepare myself at the junior level and then at the national level,” he said. On entering in to the club for the very first time, Tendulkar said it was different reading his name and he
Palha scores over Deshmukh

UMBAI: Sixth seeded Natasha Palha from Goa played an aggressive brand of tennis to register a 6-0, 4-0 win Nikita Deshmukh (retired) in the second round to enter the pre-quarter-finals of the of the US $15,000 CCI- ITF Women’s tennis tournament here today. Third seeded Rishka Sunkara from Delhi outplayed wild card Jeni Patel from Gujarat 6-3, 6-1 while the only qualifier to move into the pre-quarters was Mumbai’s Adnya Naik, who disposed off another qualifier Anushka Sathe 6-1, 6-0. However, the doubles ties produced plenty of thrilling rallies. Sagrika Phadke, who went through the qualifying round to make the main draw of the singles, was equally impressive with Sahan Shetty as her partner in the doubles. The pair after being stretched by the Delhi pair of Varuna Chandrashekhar and Smriti Joon in the first set, won 7-5, 6-3.
felt humbled. “It felt different when I was walking in to the ground reading my name on top of the club... not used to it. Didn’t expect that... but from my family and my behalf I am humbled and a big thank you to MCA for this kind gesture.”
UMBAI: Union Agriculture Minister and Mumbai Cricket Association president Sharad Pawar lavished praise on Sachin Tendulkar during the naming of the MCA’s Kandivili facility as ‘Sachin Tendulkar Gymkhana’ on Monday evening. Naming several Mumbai cricketers, Pawar said like Tendulkar’s predecessors, the batting maestro has lived up to the reputation of Mumbai cricket and brought laurels to the city and the country. He added that in order to make him what he is today, his coach Ramakant Achrekar made him play on different wickets in order to hone his skills. “Sachin like his predecessors is a true product of the MCA. His coach honed his cricket skills by making him play cricket matches on different wickets on the grounds of Mumbai and Sachin values that the most. Sachin has done the Indian cricket
proud with his constant achievements in both Test and one day internationals and has given joy to millions of cricket lovers all over the world,” said Pawar. Pawar added that Tendulkar throughout his career has been a non-controversial figure on and off the field and feels he is the perfect ambassador not only for budding cricketers but also for sportspersons in general. “In his 24 long years he has never been involved in any controversy on or off the field. One thing that stands about Sachin is his respect for the game and the way he carries himself on the ground. He is the perfect ambassador for the game. There is no doubt that while playing for India he has first established himself as an ambassador for India. He is a perfect role model for the younger generation not only for cricket but sports persons in general. We will miss the chants of Sachin Sachin ...,” said Pawar adding that the facility would be free for cricketers.
HPCA to build museum in honour of Tendulkar D
HARAMSALA: Not to be left behind in honouring retiring icon Sachin Tendulkar, the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association today announced that it will pay tribute to the legendary batsman by dedicating a museum to him in the HPCA premises. “It gives us immense pleasure to announce that HPCA would be celebrating retirement of mastero Sachin Tendulkar from international cricket by dedicating a cricketing museum at Dharamshala in
his honour,” the HPCA said in a statement. The decision was taken after the HPCA’s executive meeting here. “It is a small tribute by the cricket association to the greatest son of Indian cricket, who has inspired generations of cricketers across the world,” said HPCA President Anurag Thakur. “This is another feather in the cap of the HPCA, which is committed to providing and developing world class infrastructure in Himachal.
The museum would become a great centre of attraction for all the visitors who come to visit the picturesque HPCA stadium,” he added. The museum would have the details of Indian cricketing history and the players who have contributed to the development or brought glory to the country. The executive meeting also discussed the recent court stay it managed to get after the HPCA was taken over by the state government in a midnight coup some days back.
