This is a photograph of Ms. Manju Goutam, a 27year old subeditor of a leading news paper and daughter of Mr. Moolchand Goutam, resident of Vasant range, Gurgaon road, Delhi. She wrote to us that she was experiencing roughness in her hair and even hair fall, because of this problem the length and thickness of her hair was getting reduced everyday. One day she read the experience of Ms. Kalpana Naagar, about the usage of Ayurvedic Kesh King hair oil, Capsule and Aloevera shampoo, in her own newspaper. This made her to remember the Kesh King advertisement that was appearing on leading channel Aajtak and Delhi Aajtak. Ms. Manju then collected all the relevant information on how to use Kesh King and decided that if she gets Manju Ji from Delhi befitted from Kesh King, then she will also send her photograph to the company. She went to nearby medical shop and purchased the Kesh King oil, Capsule and Aloevera shampoo. As expected within 20-25days she got extremely good results. Amey Jaju Working Professional As far as I have read, cross practicing is not allowed and the point that allopathy doctors are making about risking people's lives is scary.
Suresh Raja Banker I have many friends who have spent four years studying medicine and it is difficult to believe that what is being taught in four years to future doctors can be taught to doctors from a different branch of medicine in a year. But the fact that the doctors do have a medical background, might help in quicker learning. A student who did not wished to be named told the ADC: “I had come for the convocation with my parents, but I was not allowed. We are students and it's our convocation then why have we been stopped? This is unfair.”
Dr Naresh Chandra, pro-vice chancellor of MU said: “The event has been successfully carried out and all the students were allowed for the convocation.” After Dr R.A Mashelkar, who had earlier been finalised as the chief guest for the convocation had written to the Vice-Chancellor that he would not be available for the event due to his eye surgery, National Association of Accreditation Council (NAAC) Prof. A.N. Political Farming It's during election season that the most 'seasoned' political brains are put to the test, for their skill and political acumen in thwarting their opponents and paving their way to the seat of power. In this game of political chess, checkmating your opponent has to be absolutely perfect, or else one can be easily out-
Raju Shetti smarted and have to swallow pride. For the time being, the BJP-Shiv Sena-RPI-Athawale led Mahayuti has posed a formidable challenge to the ruling Congress-NCP alliance in its Western Maharashtra sugarcane belt stronghold by roping in the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatna (SSS) MP Raju Shetti to its side. That is why, in the SSS case, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) appears to have been outwitted. But this may not be the end. The entry of AAP has opened yet another door for all those disgruntled elements and those who nurture political ambitions or simply want to duck an anti-incumbency wave. However, what needs to be borne in mind is that Delhi, where the antigraft agitation was based, was essentially a three-way contest. But not so in Maharashtra where the political pie is already fragmented into smaller pieces like NCP, MNS, RPI factions, BRP-BBM, BSP, SP, and a host of other smaller parties, each with its own pocket of influence. Moreover, there are many other smaller regional satraps who
further have their own pockets of influence. Another significant factor is that of caste and religion, which again are splintered amongst various parties and factions. That is why, at election time, the bigger players go shopping for alliance partners to shore up their numbers. Besides this, the equations and voting preferences in Lok Sabha and Assembly elections vary between national and local issues. It is the urban centres where the AAP can pose a formidable challenge. But here again, the Baap MNS is yet to wake up from its five-year long political hibernation. It is in the urban segment where the BJP, Sena to a lesser extent have their task cut out in tackling the AAP effect. It must be borne in mind here that in the 2009 Lok Sabha, the Congress swept Mumbai and notched a credible performance in the Assembly elections that followed later. In Mumbai, though unlike in Delhi, it could be a multi-cornered fight with the pie being reduced to crumbs. Although the state is more urbanised, there are a range of options available before the electorate. Moreover, unlike its situation in the rest of the country, the Congress is very much a formidable force to reckon with at the civic body level and has a strong presence in the cooperative movement from where it and the NCP too derive their political strength. Even during the strong Janata Party wave of the mid-70s, Congress had bucked the national trend in Maharashtra. Besides this, in alliance with its own offshoot, the NCP, the Congress has managed to duck the anti-incumbency wave in the state assembly polls for the last 15 years, thanks to a weak, fragmented opposition. Shetti, through his rustic rural approach to campaigning modelled on the Obamastyle of fund raising, has shaken the Congress-NCP stronghold in Western Maharashtra, in the sugarcane belt and overall amongst the farmers among whom he commands a massive fan following. To his credit, he has
SIMHASAN Prashant Hamine | ADC the revolutionary mode once in government does not work always, as governance requires experience, skill, deft diplomacy, bargaining and at times taking one step backwards to take that one giant leap forward. Otherwise, the bureaucracy, which is the more permanent fixture, unless reined in by a seasoned politician, can take a novice for a ride down the garden path. Yet the growing support is a grim warning for the established political parties, as Although the major political those of the die-hard old parties may be dismissive of guard are now sending feelers the challenge posed by the to the AAP. The task is an upAam Aadmi Party (AAP) in hill one, admit AAP leaders, but the kind of disarray, nonchalance and even arrogance amongst some established political parties seems to be laying a well prepared political turf for the AAP to exploit. posed a formidable challenge to NCP chief Sharad Pawar in his own bastion of Baramati. Little wonder then that Pawar Senior now wants to take the Rajya Sabha route to Parliament. Already, there are claimants to Shetti’s legacy or copy-cats in the form of Independent MLA Bachchu Kadu and Prashant Bumb who have modelled their style of politics on that of Shetti.

Arvind Kejriwal the coming polls in Maharashtra, the ground reality points to a groundswell of interest in the AAP. With celebrities flocking in droves to join the party, one wonders as to how much of the Aam Aadmi still remains in the party. Moreover, it is still relying on an online membership drive and applications for party tickets, which is still to find connect with the rural voter and the poor. Besides, the style of governance is relatively new and untested. Continuing with
No FIR in Adarsh case M
arine Drive police have refused to entertain senior BJP leader Dr. Kirit Somaiya's plea to register a First Information Report (FIR) in the Adarsh case. In a letter to the senior BJP leader, the police have informed that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) are already investigating the matter under the provisions of Prevention of
Corruption Act. The police have pointed out to Somaiya that his statement with regard to his complaint has been recorded on January 7, 2013. The bureaucrats and armed forces officers mentioned in his complaint have been arrested and a charge-sheet has been filed before the Special Court. Moreover, the investigation by both the CBI and ACB is being directly
India resonance, which was not the case earlier. Issues which have been already exploited by the AAP are now being addressed by the established political parties and seasoned politicians, though half-heartedly. The question remains as to what were the established parties and politicians doing till now on these issues all these years. The answer last week was in the back-to-back cabinet meetings where the government cleared a slew of decisions. The established are still taking lead in calling themselves as Baap (Father) and Aai (Mother) of state politics, while the toddler (AAP) seems to be finding its feet in the political turf of Maharashtra. It is little wonder then that even the RSS has been prompted to tell the BJP not to take the AAP so lightly after what happened to it in Delhi.

The police has added that since the case has already been filed with the CBI which is also investigating the matter, another case cannot be registered in the same matter. Following the tabling of the Adarsh commission inquiry report, Somaiya earlier last week demanded that the police register a case against former Congress chief ministers.

reporting about transplanting within 30 days and by openly flouting directives of the Tree Authority, this has been enormously against public interest, Singh said. The letter further stated, “The environmental clearance was granted without any due mandatory appraisal by the Expert Appraisal Committee. This is apparent from the fact that the Airport Authority of India made a request on March 8, 2007 and the Environment Clearance was granted in 25 days i.e. on April 3, 2007. The said Environment Clearance was granted without the mandatory Public Hearing.
Despite the fact that this was a Category ‘A’ project, yet no ‘Terms of Reference’ were prepared by the Expert Appraisal Committee. Despite the fact that the scope of the project changed later, yet no fresh Environment Clearance was sought. No compliance reports as required under the law have been put in the website of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, New Delhi and also that of the MIAL. Singh’s letter also alleged that the mammoth terminal is almost like a huge shopping mall which is not permitted under the Development Control of Greater Mumbai, 1991. “It is seen that in this huge terminal there are hundreds of shops. As per the reservation shown in the Development Plan, this land is reserved for airport. Under the Rules, only ancillary use to the main use is permitted. Since here the main reservation is that of Airport, only ancillary use to it can be permitted.
However, in this case, in the terminal building, a huge area is being used as a shopping mall. The website of the Mumbai Airport claims that it sells exclusive brands of goods. This is just as they are sold in plush shopping malls. It is submitted that the rules contained in the Development Control Regulations of Greater Mumbai, 1991 do not permit such a use. Based on this, I have sought PM’s intervention to order Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) to take immediate action under the Environment Protection Act, 1986, for MIAL to have undertaken construction without Environment Clearance and to call upon the Government of Maharashtra to take action as per the law against the violations.

A
fter the anti-toll agitation took an ugly turn in Kolhapur, the state government swung in to action with Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan announcing that the government is trying find a way out on the issue. The agitation against toll collection on nine roads in Kolhapur city yesterday, took a violent turn as Shiv Sena activists vandalised four toll nakas. Speaking to reporters, Chavan said, “I am monitoring the situation in Kolhapur and keeping a close watch on it. Law and order should not be disturbed under any circumstances. We are trying our level best to find a way out on this contentious issue. A discussion on this topic was held two days ago and the government is working on it”. He also appealed to the people to remain calm. On Sunday morning, large crowds from Kolhapur and the surrounding areas trooped down to
the nine toll nakas on the outskirts of Kolhapur city, protesting againt the resumption of toll collection despite official assurance that it would be stopped from Saturday night. Two toll posts were burned down and five others vandalised, as the ongoing week-long anti-toll agitation turned violent. On Saturday evening, the state government took a decision to stop collecting toll from the public, and stated that it would instead, recover the amount from the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation and hand it over to the company managing the posts. The company – Ideal Road Builder – however, resumed toll collection late last night on the grounds that they were not issued a formal letter to the effect. As a result people came out onto the streets and reacted violently. Kolhapur Anti-Toll Committee (KATC) leader N.D. Patil, who is at the forefront of the campaign against road toll, urged the state government to immediately clarify its stand on the issue. While a cou-

Supporting the reforms move which would eventually benefit farmers, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said the government believes that farmers should get the freedom to sell their produce wherever they want. "Farmers should get the freedom of selling their produce wherever they want. We have been working on this issue since the past five years," Pawar said. Schoolboy helps cops crack case By Neel Shah
W
ith the help of a 10-year-old school boy, the Mumbai's crime branch last week was able to arrest the main accused in a robbery case, in which a jeweller was robbed in broad daylight in Santacruz. The arrested accused have been identified as Manoj Jain (39), Hiral Nair (20), Raj Chaudhary (22), Alim Sayyed (20) and Siraj Khan (19). Sleuths from the Unit IV Depart-
ment of the crime branch had arrested the five accused last Thursday, for robbing 60-year-old P. Jain on January 6. Jain was attacked by three of the accused while walking towards Santacruz station. One of the men hit Jain on his face with a rod while the other picked up the bag which Jain was carrying and handed it over to the third accused who fled on a bike. Within a day or two, officers from the crime branch arrested two of the accused who then revealed the name of main accused – Hiral Nair.
While trying to get further information on Nair, inspector Sanjeev Bhole, the incumbent in-charge of Unit IV, came across Nair's criminal antecedents, informed the police. After the police learnt that a similar case was registered against Nair in Borivli police station, Inspector B. Tupe and A. Mohite – both attached to Unit IV – reached Nair's residential address, based on what was mentioned in the records at Borivli police station. On reaching at his residence, the police learnt that he had shifted
without informing anyone. Subsequently, the cops started inquiring about Nair in the vicinity of his old residence when a 10-year-old boy told the cops that a person, who was earlier residing at the same address, now rarely visits the area, but when he does he rides his bike in speed. The cops laid a trap and started keeping eye on all the youth in the area who ride their bikes in speed. Before long the cops zeroed in on Nair who confessed about his role in the robbery during interrogation. He also led the police to the master-
mind of the robbery – Manoj Jain – who is also a jeweller. Manoj had masterminded the robbery as he was in debt. Meanwhile, the victim – who was admitted to Lilavati hospital after the incident – has been discharged. Police officials said that the victim had told the Vakola police that he was robbed of valuables worth Rs. 14 lakh. However, crime branch officials said that they recovered all the stolen valuables which amounted to Rs. 5 lakh. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

he approval of the construction of a new crematorium at Kopri Village in Vashi – which was pending for eight years – has finally been passed by the general body of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), thus providing residents with a suitable place to cremate the deceased. The total expenditure for the new construction of the Kopri village crematorium is estimated at Rs. 1.33 crore. Half of the land in Kopri village – located in Sectors-26 and 27 of Vashi – which has been used all these years to cremate the dead, has been occupied by illegal constructions. The issue of the need for a crematorium was raised repeatedly over the years by corporator Vilas Bhoir and other Congress leaders in the meetings of the Standing Committee and General Body. It was only when the corporators
protested that the authorities passed the proposal, and stated that the work would be completed at the earliest. According to officials, the crematorium will have a funeral pyre stand, benches, restrooms and store rooms, among other facilities. Residents of the satellite city have been experiencing a lack of facilities in the crematorium. In fact, politicians also experienced the poor infrastructure during the funeral of late NCP corporator Ramesh Shinde in November last year. Shinde was cremated at the Turbhe crematorium near the APMC market. However, as the chimney at the crematorium was non-functional, the bodies were being cremated outdoors, causing pollution. Thane guardian minister Ganesh Naik, who was present at the funeral, has since then directed the repair of the Turbhe crematorium . khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

The duo are believed to be small time punters who were operating at the behest of an influential bookie who has been allowed to go scotfree, highly placed sources revealed. According to the police, based on specific information that some persons were accepting bets for the ongoing T-20 matches of the Big Bash cricket tournament being held in Australia, a police team led by API Jaiprakash Guthe raided an eighth floor flat in the RNA Courtyard Complex, and caught two persons red-handed accepting bets for the match being played between Sydney Sixer’s and Perth Scorchers on Friday night. The betting syndicate was being operated using a sophisticated Line-Box connected to multiple mobile phones to receive calls from punters. All the calls were recorded as proof of the betting transactions. The police have a seized two laptops, ten mobile phones and a television set from the apartment. Not ruling out more arrests in the case, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Mira Bhayandar range) Chandrakant Joshi said, “ We are taking the help of technical experts to extract information saved in the laptops about transactions and the amount of bets accepted and placed by the accused.” Meanwhile a case under Sections 4 (a) and 5 of the Bombay Prevention of Gambling Act has been registered against the two who have been remanded to police custody.

AHUL GANDHI’S poll wave across the country appears to be conspicuous by its absence. Narendra Modi’s aggressive campaign seems to have advanced good results. In five states where assembly elections were held, the BJP emerged victorious. It has become clear to Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi cannot win elections for them. They are however sticking to him because they still believe that the dynasty man will make it. The Delhi poll rout was a big blow to the Congress. Pitted against former chief minister Sheila Dixit was the AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal. He defeated her by more than 25,000 votes. The AAP has threatened to field its candidate Kumar Vishwas against Rahul. The AAP seems to be quite confident it will beat Rahul Gandhi. The Congress leaders are advising him to contest from more than one centre. Kumar Vishwas has already announced he will oppose Rahul in Amethi. This has evidently made Rahul jittery. He is reported to have decided to do what his grandmother Indira Gandhi did: He is planning to stand for elections at Chikmagalur also. The AAP however is unlikely to leave him unopposed. The AAP has decided to follow him and contest elections against him. It wil be a great embarrassment for the Congress if Rahul Gandhi is defeated both in Amethi and Chikmagalur. The emergence of the AAP and its sudden jump into the poll fray has caused quite a few problems for the Congress. It is making all possible effort to be an ally of the AAP. There has been a secret deal between the AAP and the Congress regarding combined operations against the BJP. What the Aam Aadmi Party wants to do is to target both the Congress and the BJP and come to power at the Centre. Its success in Delhi has been spectacular. Just now, it knows it cannot by itself win the Lok Sabha polls. It is using the Congress to achieve its own objectives. It does not seem to have any qualms about defeating Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi. It is said to be having secret deal with the Congress and at the same time, it has a strong plan for defeating Rahul Gandhi in the ensuing Lok Sabha polls.

T is highly likely that the AAP threat to the established political parties is vastly exaggerated. Just as it was widely understated before it actually won 28 seats in the Delhi Assembly, hammering the Congress so badly that it now espies salvation in propping up a minority government of its own tormentor. Yet, assessing the chances of AAP in the Lok Sabha elections would be in order. Though it would run against the prevailing public wisdom, especially when a large media group seems determined to plug AAP, Arvind Kejriwal’s is an amorphous mob which converged under the Anna Hazare-led anti-corruption banner and stayed on to form a political party. Last month, on the back of that noisy and emotive Lokpal campaign in the heart of the nation’s capital, it rode to power. Yes, a lot of buzz is sought to be created about AAP’s enrolment drive, some of the big-names associating with it, about the incessant flow of donations, etc. A number of ordinary and not-so-ordinary people, disgusted with the bad government and malfeasance of the UPA have bought into the AAP promise of a new beginning. But will it add up to anything, bar the daily headlines in an AAP-sozzled media? We have our doubts. Parliamentary elections are no longer won or lost on slogans. Caste and regional identities play a major role, as do old and well-established organizational structures of national and regional parties. AAP cannot hope to parachute into the already crowded political marketplace and walk away with the winner’s trophy. Replicating Delhi at the national level will be as hard as finding takers for Kejriwal’s Haryanavi act in the interiors of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. At best, AAP can hope to find some midterm traction in Delhi as a third force in the capital’s bipolar politics. A one-issue party sans a public policy, an idea of what ails India, or about its geographical borders, and the exercise of sovereignty over those borders, cannot survive for long by merely chanting ‘chor, chor’ against all and sundry. What does it offer by way of improving the everyday life of Indians, how it intends to navigate the economic and foreign policy thickets without landing this country into a greater mess than it already is are questions which elicit no reassuring answers. Like an author in search of a plot for his new book, the AAP is shopping around for a saleable ideology. The power and water giveaways was the easiest part, though the aam aadmi in Delhi should be ready to pick up the tab for such freebies in the near future. There are costs attached to every freebie, unless AAP agrees to pay for these thru its own fund collections. Nor does opening one more telephone line to report corruption lessen the menace. Even if AAP were to create a separate ministry for entrapments, corruption is unlikely to come down. It is a systemic problem which does not lend itself to gimmicky solutions like sting operations. Nor, for that matter, does the promise of 90 per cent reservations in Delhi University colleges for ‘locals’ impress anyone. Doing that would be beyond its remit, anyway. What can AAP do which is startlingly different? Its ministers wouldn’t make money, let us assume. What is so great about that? The real challenge lies in doing some unglamorous things, such as toning up administration, taking away discretionary powers of babus, trusting citizens to fix their own water and power meters, penalizing them heavily if these are found faulty, making auto drivers less arbitrary and making them use lights, back and front, on their vehicles, etc. Can AAP do it? noises being made by attention-seekers and Page Threewallas such as a Mrinalini Sarabhai in Ahmedabad or a Meera Sanayal in Mumbai. There are some who are always ready to clamber up any bandwagon that would provide them a tiny speck of limelight. AAP should spread its wings only after it has proved its worth as a stable and able party in the nation’s capital. Otherwise, a great disappointment awaits it in the Lok Sabha polls. Postscript: It may be the media has per force taken to plug AAP since the owners could not resist the pressure from the ruling party to keep Modi out of the national focus. But, then, the credibility of the media could be undermined if AAP turns out to be a dud in the parliamentary polls, as is most likely to happen.

HILE still on AAP, CM Arvind Kejriwal’s flip-flop on accepting a government house underlines the wishy-washy nature of the party’s work ethics. By all means, he should live in a government house, so long as he does not insist on great opulence and acres of green in Lutyens’ Delhi. political motive. To his credit, Rai refused to be drawn into any controversy, maintaining complete silence before and after his retirement. The admission of wrong-doing by the Government answers loud and clear all his critics. He had worked diligently and most objectively to protect the public purse and found that the UPA Government had allowed the corrupt elements to raid the national exchequer for personal enrichment. It may be recalled that the apex court had famously said that the CBI was `like a caged parrot’ for changing the thrust of its report in the coal scam to protect senior members of the Government. Also, the Government had taken a lot of flak in Parliament and outside after it had claimed that a number of crucial files pertaining to the wrongful coal mine allocations had gone missing. The Congress spokespersons had sought to drag the Opposition-run governments for recommending some of these coal allocations, though the final decision in this regard lay with the Centre. All these diversionary tactics came to nought when the Government finally confessed that there was hanky-panky in coal block allocations. Due to the mess in its coal exploration policy, India has had to import vast quantities of coal to fire its thermal power stations. Last year alone, coal imports ran up a bill of $13 billion, which further pressured the trade account imbalance. Meanwhile, canceling the coal licenses wholesale, as was controversially done in the 2-G spectrum case, may not be the correct solution. It would push back further the development of new coal mines. The country cannot afford this delay, especially when over-dependence on thermal power continues unabated. A mixed approach will fit the bill. New licensees who have either commissioned the new mines or are well on the way to do so in the near future, ought to be let off after being made to pay huge penalties. Others who have not proceeded to implement their licenses, ought to forfeit them outright. Finally, politicians like Manish Tiwari and Kapil Sibal should offer a public apology to Vinod Rai, the most upright and fearless CAG in recent years. He served the nation’s interest best by spotlighting the theft of public funds by highly-placed ministers and their minions.

AAP putting other parties in a fix WITH the general elections fast approaching, all parties are trying their best to woo the people to their side to get a favourable mandate. However, it is not so easy to get into such a position without hard work. The Congress and the BJP are struggling a bit as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is trying its best to attract people towards its goals and ambition. The Nukad Durbar is one such initiative taken by Arvind Kejriwal to give the people the much needed confidence about the party in Delhi. The AAP is trying its best with its ministers sitting outside the office daily to try and resolve complaints. But how far it will go is not known so far. The AAP will need to follow up all the complaints and attend them on a time bound basis instead of just noting them down and sitting on them. It is up to the AAP to go all out and fullfil all its election promises without wasting time. — C.K. Ramananthan, Ghaziabad
THIS is the first time in democratic history that the AAP has put all the political parties in a fix with its decision to reduce electricity and water tariffs, forcing the ruling parties in various states to also plan to reduce tariffs and make voters happy before the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. I strongly feel that with the emergence of the AAP, all the political parties who have looted public money for their selfish personal and political gains are nervous because they know very well that if they do not reduce tariffs or supply electricity and water, they will be rejected by voters. It is high time all political parties stop playing dirty politics failing which their days are numbered. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai
UPSET over senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Prashant
INSTILLING CONFIDENCE: By starting The Nukad Durbar, Arvind Kejriwal is trying to give the people the much needed confidence about the party's ability. Bhushan’s remarks on Kashmir, a group of people allegedly belonging to a right-wing outfit vandalised the office of the party at Kaushambi in Ghaziabad. The BJP and the Congress condemned the incident, stating that no one has the right to resort to violence. According to footage captured by CCTVs cameras, a band of 10-15 protesters carrying the signature flag of an outfit which police suspected to be of the Hindu Raksha Dal, hurled stones and bricks at the office. Although no one was injured in the attack, it is clear that Kejriwal's AAP needs proper security in the future instead of having the lives of their leaders exposed — Jayanthi S. Maniam, Sion
IT is reported that Yogendra Yadav of the AAP has, of late, found that the 'percentage' of reservations for the lower castes is 'low' and hence the same is to be enhanced to provide some justice. Yadav is also said to be the AAP's candidate for the CM's post in Haryana and has good chances of trouncing the Congress and be allowed to govern. It was argued vehemently at the start that those staying in the shelters were not riot victims but people brought from elsewhere and planted by other political parties to malign the administration. rule and the AAP has been promising the same all the way. People also want that merit should be considered and hence, Arvind Kejriwal, who is a IITian himself and an IRS officer, should strongly advise the likes of Yadav to focus their minds on progressive views and not on populist platitudes which will dry out the stream of hopes of the people and render the AAP the weakest ever party in India. It will be better if wisdom dawns on the AAP as early as possible. — T.M. Uday Shankar, Mumbai
APROPOS your edit 'Arvind Kejriwal's national ambition' (7 Jan), could any political pandit ever predict that a party of political novices would creditably stand up to stalwarts like the Congress and BJP in the Delhi assembly elections? Nobody was readily inclined to give credence to the unbelievably phenomenal success of the AAP at the Delhi assembly polls. I will agree when you say that organising a poll campaign across the entire country within such a short time appears hilarious. Being fully aware of their little strength in terms of the dedicated selfnewspapers on a daily basis", in her piece 'Inhumanity in a secular cloak' (January 9). — Dr. V. Sbramanyan, Thane
THE brazen shamelessness with which our so called honorary members of the legislative assembly have gone to enjoy foreign junkets and glitzy programmes in spite of such insulting exposes during TV debates, shows that politicians of all hues are not bothered about any criticism. They feel that once elected, they are free to indulge in any shameless acts. This will continue as long as people vote on the basis of caste, creed or religion. Further politicians seem not to have learnt any lessons from the emergence of the AAP and it looks like we get the rulers we deserve. It is shocking to find that Salman Khan, Madhudri Dixit Nene, Kapil and other worthies have gone to entertain the father son-duo, knowing full well that Muzzafar Nagar refugees are living in dire straits. — A.K.R. effacing soldiers of the party, woeful lack of their bases or establishments in the faroff places in the country, they appear resolutely determined to do their best for the sake of the aam aadmi, which is something that they have been acting on . The aam aadmi is awakened and alerted of the AAP's existence for his own overall welfare, thereby ensuring that help will continue to pour in, in abundance. With this encouraging scenario, it is unfortunate that there was a negative note at the end of your edit which stated that the 'AAP winning the majority in the Lok Sabha elections does not arise at all'. The fact that everyone is entitled to his own view, is all that should be said at this stage. — Arundhati Wajge, Narayangaon

Request to Aamir Khan I AM extremely glad to notice that Aamir Khan is the brand ambassador for road safety in Mumbai. I request him to read the following fact and do the needful at his earliest and oblige us all. Very frequently, senior citizens, women and children face reckless driving by all kinds of vehicle drivers, including the young bikers, at the junction of Sai Leela Chowk, near the Saibaba temple in Borivali (West). Any pedestrian might become the victim of a fatal accident because all vehicle drivers indiscriminately ignore the traffic signals at this junction. May I request the concerned authority to solve this problem on a permanent basis by appointing uncorrupted personnel at the spot? — Hansraj Bhat, Borivali
Lost and found
THE AAP, by its recent views on national issues, has shown that it is too young to take on the reins of the nation. Our country is varied in culture, in political ideologies, has been riddled with terrorist and secessionist activities, has regional parties indulging in votebank politics, and has cross-culture migrations across the country apart from other issues. Referendum cannot, therefore, be a solution to our problems which are humongous and compounded by some unfriendly neighbours. The AAP has a long way to go before it can think of entering the national stream. Let t prove its credential by effectively governing Delhi for five years, by implementing the 17 points that Kejriwal has listed, by initiating action against the alleged corrupt practices of Sheila Dixit, Suresh Kalmadi and others and by ending the water-mafia raj in Delhi. Governing and governance are easier said than done. The way AAP is maneuvering itself, Mulayam may prove right in observing that the ‘bubble of AAP will burst very soon’.
THE real life story of a TV and film actress eloping with her paramour and staging a kidnapping drama, reads like a mystery tale of a lost and found story. The aggrieved hubby can seriously think of filing for divorce under the charge of adultery.

Waste of money APROPOS 'Foreign study tour at govt's expense' (ADC, Jan 10), the edit piece graphically reveals the ways by which government employees – MLAs and municipal officials visit developed nations under the guise of study tours. Crores of rupees of tax payers' hard earned money is thus spent for no benefit at all for the public at large. These tours mostly cater for the merriment and other pleasures drawn by these people who care a damn for the unwar- LETTER OF ranted expenditure that THE DAY seriously dents the government coffers. In the case of most such tours, we find that on their return, neither they can contribute to infrastructure projects, nor are they of any use to public benefit projects. We recently observed that a group of MLAs were bound for some Latin American countries for a study tour, which the media revealed was of no use for the state, but the government personnel would enjoy the lovely scenic

2] Statistical diagrams: Statistical diagrams represent statistical data. Everything that exits has some dimension. Things can have one, two, three or more dimensions. Length, area or volume of an object are measured with one, two or three dimensions. A point is supposed to be a non-dimensional identity. Number of points joining together to form a line is called a one dimensional diagram. A number of lines put together close to each other form an area are called two dimensional diagrams. Figures like square, rectangle, circle etc (area) are two dimensional diagrams. Objects like cube, sphere, cyclinder etc. (Volumes are three dimensional diagrams. 3] Line Graphs A Line Graph is a one dimensional diagram. In this graph two elements are shown. Usually, time is shown on the horizontal ‘X’ axis and the variable (population, values etc) are shown on the vertical ‘Y’ axis. (Fig 9.7 text book draw here) Please note that the diagram given in the text book is wrong; hence refer to the diagram given here: Scale correction 1cm =10 %
Line Graph is very useful to indicate trend in values over a period of time. It is a very simple method to show population growth, industrial growth or profit or prices etc easily. It gives an immediate visual impact.
4] Simple Bar Graph A simple bar graph is a one dimensional diagram. It is also known as ‘pillar diagram’ or ‘column graph’. These bars have no specific width, but all the bars are of uniform width. The height of the bar is proportional to the value of the variable element. The vertical ‘Y’ axis indicates the values of the variable, while the horizontal ‘X’ axis shows various regions or time period. Observe given fig. of simple bar graph.
Bar graph is very useful for comparative study of elements of various regions. Agricultural production, industrial production, population of various regions etc. can be shown with the help of a simple bar graph. 5] Divided Rectangle A divided rectangle is a two dimensional diagram. A rectangle is proportionately divided to represent different sub-factors of any data. Generally, data is in the form of percentage. It they are not so, they should be converted into percentage. The total area of the rectangle is considered as 100 per cent and it is divided according to the percentage of each sub-factor. Since each sub-unit shown in the rectangle has a separate identity. It should be shaded differently and a legend should be given to understand it easily. It is used for providing information about land use pattern, crops, industrial output, electric supply etc. Draw figure 9.5 of text book Scale correction

6] Divided circle or Pie Diagram Divided Circle is also a two dimensional diagram. Different sections are shown in a circle. A circle has 3600 which are divided according to the sectors given may be or area or production. To calculate these divisions, the following formula is used : Angle of the Sector = sector data X 360o Total data
ADC copies are available at Saphale, Palghar, Boisar, Dahanu, Vapi, Silvassa, Daman, Also at Alibaug & Uran
Draw a circle of suitable size radius. Divide it according to the angles calculated for each sector. Shade the sector. Write the title and draw legend to express each shade. Divided Circle (Types of irrigation) Scale 360o =100%
This method is very useful to show population data like male/female, workers/non-workers, age composition, etc. This method is very useful to compare data and understand the proportion of each sector as a part of the whole. It gives a very good visual impact. It gives only a comparative picture looking at the diagram. You cannot calculate the exact value.

PUBLIC SECTOR BANKS
O
By Clifton Desilva
ver the last few years economies across the world including India have been in a slow down mode and the sector to be most affected is the Banking industry as this sector is considered as a proxy of the economy. It is obvious that when the performance of the corporate sector is on the decline the banking sector is first to take the hit as loans turn into non performing assets and in many cases have to be restructured. Banks are also faced with funding problems of the infrastructure companies as projects worth Rs 15 lakh crore are stalled due to lack of environmental clearance, land acquisition problems and the economy’s slowdown. Sector – specific problems, as in the power and iron ore sectors has further slowed orders. With finance cost rising, bankers have raised questions on how many infra companies will be able to repay their loans. Many banks are persuading companies to sell assets to reduce debts. The high cost of debt is forcing almost all infra companies to sell assets or go for debt restructuring. Huge defaults from several companies especially Kingfisher Airlines and Deccan Chronicle have further aggravated the problems at Banks and this phenomenon is mostly with pubic sector banks. Therefore there are concerns that Public sector banks earnings growth in the October – December period is likely to be limited despite improving liquidity, ebbing cost pressures and steady loan growth offering some respite to lenders in an uncertain macro-economic environment. The stock market gave thumbs down to public sector banks (PSB) stock in 2013. Their market capitalization fell 27% to Rs 276,997 crore at year end due to performance that fell short of market expectations. Public sector banks account for about 70% of loans and therefore have been hit substantially by a long spell of economic slowdown. The situation is expected to stay that way for at least for the first half of 2014. The economic slowdown stretched working capital cycles and higher interest rates have pushed many companies across sizes to the brink of default. The extent of rise in (NPA’s) has been unprecedented. According to the Reserve Bank of India data gross NPA’s of commercial banks have ballooned from Rs 94,121 crore (2.36% of the total) in March 2011 to Rs 2,36,245 crore (4.25%) by the end of September 2013. There is also pressure from
restructured advances with ah high tendency to slip into default. The performance of PSB s on all parameters had gone down, such as profitability and asset quality. Slower credit growth leading to weakening of income, pressure on margins and higher provisioning on account of weakening asset quality impacted the profitability. Private sector banks by contrast were able to maintain profitability and asset quality. According to CARE’s estimates the overall gross NPA ratio for banks would be around 4.5% by March 31, with higher proportion coming from PSBs whose gross NPA ratio was estimated to rise around 5%. Further, the banks will have to provide more restructured assets in line with the new RBI norms. These factors would exert downward pressure on margins and are likely to impact profits for FY 14 by 25-30%. However going forward the situation is likely to change for the better with most of the negatives that affected economies world over having been addressed to. In India the negative factors like Fiscal deficit, current account deficit, and policy paralysis have been addressed. Inflation still is an issue which has been high especially food inflation. Fortunately in the month of December food prices have softened and wholesale price inflation data is expected next week which will set the
tone for the RBI to act on key policy rates. In its previous policy meeting in December 2013, RBI had kept the interest rates unchanged. It however warned there may be a rise if inflation does not subside. Most of the negatives starring at the economy have largely been factored in the
stock prices of public sector banks. As and when the economy turns around the returns from public sector banks could be substantial as most of them are currently quoting at steep discounts to their highs. However, the pain could continue in the short run though in the long run the outlook is positive.
Q3 Earnings, Inflation Data To Dictate Market Trend This Week
T
By A Business Reporter hird quarter earnings from bluechips such as TCS, RIL and Wipro and inflation data for December will dictate the near-term trend on the bourses, say experts. Besides, trend in investment by foreign institutional investors, global cues and movement of rupee against the US dollar will also influence the market trend. "Inflation figures, global cues and third quarterly results for FY'14 will decide further market direction. In coming sessions, 6,130 shall be crucial deciding level in near term for the Nifty and the index is likely to witness further selling below this level," said Rakesh Goyal, Senior Vice President, Bonanza Portfolio Limited. Among major earnings this week are TCS, Axis Bank, Bajaj Auto, HCL Technologies, HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries, ITC and Wipro. Inflation based on consumer price index will come out on Monday, while that based on wholesale price index will be announced on Wednesday. According to Bhupali Gursale, Economist, Angel Broking: "In view of continuing sluggishness in growth and with food inflation expected to moderate and bring some respite from elevated headline WPI and CPI inflation prints, we expect the RBI to hold monetary policy rates during its January 28 policy review," reports PTI "This week, we have important results from Bajaj Auto, HCL Tech and Axis Bank. The inflation data is also slated to be released on January 14. On the global side, the monthly US jobs data for December would be watched out for.

A
Brand New Year
brand new year has begun. Well begun is half done. All’s well that starts well. In the world of marketing and branding, the trends of the New Year are very positive. India is going through a great time and the world now respects India not only as a knowledge powerhouse, but also as a huge consumption opportunity. ‘GROWELL’: The GDP of the country is in the “GROWELL” mode, being one of the leading growth countries in the world. Along with the economy, comes the growth of the purchasing power of its people and also the rise of the marketing and brands. Brands are growing very well. A Samsika Marketing Consultants study shows that on an average an urban Indian consumes 44 brands daily. Well, who says, we are a developing or an underdeveloped economy. We are growing well, but maybe we are an under noticed country and therefore “Brand India” also needs to “GROWELL”.
‘TRAWELL’: The consumers of India want to travel well. The “TRAWELL” phenomenon is catching up. People are upgrading from rail travel to air travel, whether by Air India or Spicejet. The original favourites are doing well whether Jet Airways with its high standards of service or the popular Indigo. The latest launch of the metro rail at Delhi will enhance the “TRAWELL” experience. The world traveler from India is being wooed by world airlines like British Airways. Well, The Indian traveler is in for some good “Trawell” times. Even internal trawell through world class cars and betterment of roads and expressways is helping “TRAWELL”.
“DWELL”: The Indian construction industry is booming and housing and housing finance is helping to meet the great Indian “DWELL” dream. Owning your own home is a great aspiration and with the growth in purchasing power, this is being met. Not only is the ‘DWELL” part of the Indian consumer’s desire being met, but also the Interiors and paints and tiles and finishes are being spruced up to make dwelling, a delight. “WELL”: Health and hygiene are sought after by the Indian consumer and healthcare, wellness centers and spas are mushrooming very fast. Excellent facilities at hospitable hospitals are making the Indian very ‘WELL’. Well, Well, Well. “JEWEL”: The branded jewelry industry has decided to showcase itself and portray what a ‘gem’ it is in the Indian economy. The industry has just launched a series of brands in the last few years. The Indian woman now has a wide choice as per her tastes and preference and the industry may turnout to be a “JEWELL” in the crown of the Indian economy.
“SWELL”: The FMCG industry and the consumer durables are having a “SWELL” time in terms of sales and one can see their order books “SWELL” with the advent of modern trade, malls and new format franchise stores. Not only are all these industries doing well, but also the industry that I call “FMCS” is doing extremely well. In my opinion “FMCS” stands for “Fast Moving Consumer Service”. Banking, telecom, insurance, hotels, courier, retailing and a number of IT industries, all find “SWELL” markets, making their customer base “SWELL”. The foreign exchange reserves, education, food grains and stock markets are also in the SWELL mode. So it’s a BRAND NEW YEAR for Indians in 2014 and all’s well that starts well. Happy New Year. ven as outsourcing demand from Europe revives after the debt crisis, data protection regulations in the region governing trans-border data flows could hurt the USD 108 billion Indian IT-ITeS industry, sectoral body Nasscom today said. "Challenges that I see are the US Immigration Bill and the data security in Europe. These are areas that we are working on...I had gone (there) in September and had conversations with EU." "...Security in Europe has the potential of going into directions which will not be conducive for (those) countries as well as our (IT) industry. They will get hurt and we will also get hurt," Nasscom President R Chandrasekhar told reporters on the sidelines of the 3rd annual Action for India forum. He added that engagement is a continuous process and Nasscom is in talks with concerned authorities across the globe on issues facing the industry. The EU Data Protection Directive governs trans-border data flows and lays down conditions for transferring of personal data of EU citizens outside the region, reports PTI. These legal instruments, together with the enforcement mechanisms across member countries, put too much obligations on businesses. Because of this, they are often considered as unfriendly to businesses especially small and mediumsized service providers. According to a Nasscom-DSCI (Data Security Council of India) survey, there is a significant opportunity loss for the ITBPO industry on the account of data transfer related issues as clients hesitate to offshore work to India because of stringent data protection requirements in the EU. Nasscom and DSCI, along with Department of Commerce (DoC) and Department of Electronics & Information Technology (DeitY), have been working on this trans-border data flow issue between EU and India. Europe, which accounts for close to 20 per cent of the
Indian IT exports, is witnessing a revival in demand for outsourcing services following the debt crisis. While growth is returning to traditional markets like the UK, newer markets like Germany are also opening up. Interestingly, Nasscom expects growing demand for outsourcing services from Europe to drive the sector in 2014, even though North America accounts for the lion's share of the industry's IT exports. The Immigration bill in the US, which proposes higher visa fees and enhanced audit by US agencies, is also a challenge that the industry is carefully monitoring. Talking about the year ahead, Chandrasekhar said FY'15 would be good as demand increases from markets like Germany and Japan.

"What is being examined is if ONGC and OIL can buy the (government) stake in IOC," Oil Secretary Vivek Rae told reporters. The Oil Ministry, he said, has "concerns" over Indian Oil Corp (IOC) shares being sold at current trading rates. An Empowered Group of Ministers, headed by Finance Minister P Chidambaram, will meet this week to look at alternatives to meet the disinvestment target. "The Finance Ministry says give us Rs 4,600 crore (Rs 46 bil-
lion) either by way of disinvestment, cross-holding or special dividend. They have no particular objection to IOC shares being bought by ONGC or OIL," he said. Under the proposal, the government shares in IOC will be sold to Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) and Oil India (OIL).
The government in the past too had resorted to the cross-holding route to shore up its revenues. In late 1990s, the government had sold its shares in Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), GAIL and Indian Oil Corp (IOC) to raise Rs 4,643 crore (Rs 46.43 billion). According to the cross-holding plan, ONGC bought 9.11 per cent in IOC and 4.83 per cent in GAIL. IOC bought 9.61 per cent in ONGC and 4.83 per cent in GAIL. GAIL in turn bought 2.4 per cent in ONGC. In 2006, IOC sold 1.92 per cent, or a fifth of its holdings in ONGC for Rs 3,672 crore (Rs 36.72 billion), recovering its entire initial investment and some more. It also sold half its holdings (2.41 per cent) in GAIL for Rs 561 crore (Rs 5.61 billion). The EGoM on January 9 deferred disinvestment of 10 per cent stake in IOC through an offer for sale on the stock markets owing to strong opposition from oil ministry. The ministry felt IOC shares, which on Friday closed at Rs 200.35, were way below the intrinsic value. The Friday closing was way lower than the 52-week peak of Rs 375 reached on January 18 last year. At Friday's closing price, IOC has market capitalisation of Rs 48,644 crore (Rs 486.44 billion). This m-cap is after factoring in IOC's 7.69 per cent holding in ONGC worth about Rs 18,000 crore (Rs 180 billion). That leaves about Rs 30,000 crore (Rs 300 billion) market value that is attributable to IOC. This is less than the investment that IOC is putting in setting up a 15 million tonne refinery at Paradip in Odisha, according to the oil ministry. The Finance Ministry had planned to sell 19.16 crore IOC shares to meet a tenth of its Rs 40,000 crore disinvestment target for the current fiscal. The government holds 78.92 per cent stake in the country's largest oil refiner as on June 30.

Sebi Asks Mutual Funds To Adopt High-Deposit Districts Afternoon Despatch & Courier

opeful of a major boost to mutual fund business, regulator Sebi has identified nearly 85 districts for possible adoption by fund houses, as these areas have high bank deposits but limited investment opportunities. In all-out efforts to help the sector, Sebi has also made necessary provisions for all their "genuine" demands, while it has also suggested greater clarity on taxation framework for mutual fund retirement schemes to attract a large pool of pension money into the capital markets. "We have no pending request from any (mutual fund) industry segment for the development of this market. Whatever request we had received, we have examined them and whatever we found to be genuine, we have allowed them to do," capital markets regulator Sebi Chairman U K Sinha told PTI. Fund houses have often complained about regulatory issues and operational difficulties in attracting investors, although their overall asset base grew by about 11% to over Rs 8.8 lakh crore in 2013. Asked about the steps being taken to help mutual fund industry, Sinha said, "What we have done is that in partnership with mutual fund industry body AMFI (Association of Mutual Funds in India), we have identified certain districts in the country where we have decided to focus more." "The way these 85-86 districts have been identified is that these are the districts where bank deposits are very high and the penetration of capital market products is very low. "This means that people have got surplus money there and they are using the banking system, but not using the capital market instru-

ments," he added. Sebi has shared the information about these districts with AMFI and the mutual funds have been asked to go and open branches in those areas. The Sebi chairman further said that branches are being opened in these areas now and the regulator has also asked the mutual fund industry to adopt districts. "Just as there used to begun. These are the measures we are taking to let the people (from financial markets) reach the people (who can invest in good products," he said. Listing out other measures undertaken by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), which also regulates the country's mutual fund industry, Sinha said that fund houses had apprehension about the advertisement code being "very rulebound and very difficult to comply". "We have addressed that concern and now we have made it (the code) risk-based. "The funds said they do not have any financial incentive for selling products, to which we said that if you go beyond top 15 cities, you will get extra incentives. We have provided for new sets
of mutual fund distributors, whose training and certification is not very difficult," he added. The Sebi chief also listed out measures like product labelling and provision for up to Rs 20,000 being accepted in cash to make it easier for the fund houses. "So, nothing is pending before us. The only thing that can be said is pending is having an SRO (Self Regulatory Organisation) for mutual fund distributors, but that exercise is also going on and it is being completed soon," Sinha said. The Sebi chief also rejected the apprehensions that mutual funds were more focussed on institutional investors and not very concerned about retail investors. "This is not a true picture. The institutional investors provide them only with AUM (Asset Under Management) and not the revenue. No company can survive merely by having a topline. So, they do focus on retail and equity products, but for a variety of reasons they have not succeeded in the last one or two years," he said. Terming tax benefits necessary to attract pension money to the capital markets, Sinha also
favoured a clarity on taxation policy to be applied to retirement-focused funds to tap this huge pool of capital. The total size of pension market in India is estimated to have stood at over Rs 1.5 lakh crore in 2010, while it is expected to rise to over Rs 2 lakh crore by 2015 and further to close to Rs 3 lakh crore in 2020 and more than Rs 4 lakh crore by 2025. This includes individual retirement money, provident fund and other small savings and is based on a study conducted by a government-appointed expert panel. However, the share of this vast capital pool is almost negligible in the equity markets, although a lot of foreign pension funds including from the US and Canada regularly invest in Indian markets. In the past, Sebi has asked asset management companies or mutual fund houses to launch pension products, so that retirement money can be brought into the capital market.

Last week ECB decided to keep all policy rates unchanged at ECB meeting. Mario Draghi wanted to sound dovish and he succeeded. There was very little emphasis on recent positive macro data and instead Draghi highlighted the ECB's readiness to take decisive action. In the introductory statement, two dovish comments were included. First, the forward guidance was strengthened: 'the Governing Council strongly emphasized that it will maintain an accommodative stance of monetary policy for as long as necessary'. Second, Draghi said the ECB remains determined 'to take further decisive action if required'. Draghi also mentioned that not to put too much emphasis on excess liquidity as the link to interest rates is weak. Instead, he said the ECB would act if money markets tighten or if the inflation outlook worsens.

FDI IN MULTI-BRAND RETAIL
Hope In Abeyance ASHUTOSH LIMAYE
is Head – Research & REIS, Jones Lang LaSalle India
« GUEST COLUMN FDI In Retail – As It Happened India’s decision to allow foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail towards the end of 2012 and its FDI policy modified in April 2013 put the country back on the retailing map of the world. However, this is not the first time that India has invited global retailers to set up their shops. In 1997, the government approved 100% FDI in “cash and carry” wholesale stores under the automatic route and, in 2006, 51% FDI was allowed in single-brand retailing, although with prior approval from the government. In December 2011, the government fully opened up FDI in single-brand retail stores. A number of international retail brands such as IKEA and Carrefour were excited to enter the Indian market and announced their plans to start talks on investment proposals with the concerned ministries. In the muchdebated and politically-sensitive multi-brand retail space, however, partial 51% FDI was proposed only in September 2012, with parliamentary approval in December 2012.
Retail in India - A Growing Story The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) predicts that the Indian retail sector is poised for 15% year-over-year growth over the next five years through 2018. This robust growth picture also is painted by AT Kearney, whose 2012 Global Retail Development Index (GRDI) puts India as the fifth most favourable destination for global retailers. In 2011, India’s retail industry accounted for 22% of India’s GDP and employed close to 9.4% of the labour force. Organized retail in India currently constitutes only 6-7% of overall retail trade in India, although by 2016-17 this share is projected to grow to 10%. Economic growth of about 7% over the next 10 years, rapid urbanization, a growing young demography with rising income, easy access to credit and rising brand consciousness are indeed contributing to the growth story for the country, but inconsistencies in policy-making, glaring inefficiencies in supply-chain logistics, the high cost of real estate and a shortage of good quality retail properties are the main constraints in achieving the projected growth. While there is no doubt about India’s huge market size that attracts the world’s largest retailers, retail real estate in India is still a young industry. With a history of approximately only 13 years, India’s malls make up only 80 million square feet (sq ft) of space. The global financial crisis and its lingering impacts have resulted in major delays to retail-supply additions planned for over the last five years, with 2012 seeing the lowest number of new mall completions in India since 2006. If all of the planned new supply targeted for completion between 2013 and 2015 gets delivered, India will have 100 million sq ft of mall space by the end of 2015, still a fairly small number given the market size. Visible Impact of FDI Will Take Time With the relaxation of the FDI policy, the government has ended a waiting period of more than seven years for multinational retailers to enter the market. The impact is likely to be a mixed initially as small retailers and middlemen/agents will face increased pressure on their business with the entry of the international retail-chain operators. However, it will work positively for farmers and small-

scale manufacturing hubs as they will find large-scale buyers for their products. It will also be beneficial for customers as this will increase one-stop shopping options with access to international brands. It could require an additional 6-10 years for the market to mature. Even in China, the international giants like Wal-Mart, Tesco, Carrefour, Auchan and Costco had a long settlingin period contrary to a general perception that streamlined approval systems, government facilitation and shorter construction periods can help retailers settle down quickly. While the relaxation in FDI rules will allow a big-bang entry by global retailers, some of them have already set up their business in some way or have collaboration arrangements in place with Indian companies. For example, Carrefour opened its first cash-and-carry store in India in New Delhi, German-based Metro opened six wholesale centres in the country, Wal-Mart plans to invest about US$2.5 billion over the next five years in a joint venture with Bharti Retail and Tesco has signed an agreement with Trent Ltd., the retail segment of the Tata Group, to set up cash-and-carry stores. Additionally, Swedish fast-fashion retail giant H&M has sought permission from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) to invest US$120 million in India to start a fully-owned company that will open 50 H&M stores. IKEA is currently waiting for the final approval from FIPB to open 25 stores with an investment of US$150 million. U.S. casualwear retailer Gap Inc., French apparel retailer Celio and Japanese fashion brand Uniqlo are also ready with their plans to enter India.
Some Hurdles To Overcome The impact of FDI is closely linked with how India can address economic, political and social hurdles. One of the economic hurdles is the high cost of real estate. Rents in India easily account for 9-15% of retailers’ revenue, which is significantly higher than the global average of 4-10%. International retailers, sensitive about real estate costs, will help to reduce the dominance of central city locations. Good but off-centre locations can bring down the land cost substantially and eventually developers can pass on these savings to their retailer occupiers with rent that is compatible with their retail business. Another hurdle is the role that Indian state governments can play in allowing FDI in the states they rule. Though the central government has allowed FDI in multibrand retail at the Centre level, the state governments are at liberty to make their own decisions about the implementation of the policy. With Indian elections due to take place no later than May 2014, the decisions of retailers to enter India could be deferred by a few months. Also, the government has laid down some requirements before allowing FDI in retail and these can affect the business planning for international retailers. The retailers must fulfil the conditions of not less than 30% of the value of procurement needs to be sourced from Indian small industries, at least 50% of FDI brought into India should be invested into backend infrastructure (distribution centres, warehousing and logistics) within three years, minimum FDI investment of US$100 million, multinational retailers can conduct their business only in cities with a population of more than one million (54 such cities as of 2011) and a requirement of a minority Indian partner. While these conditions appear fair to most, it will still take at least 12 to 24 months before India can actually experience the fruits of FDI in multi-brand retail. India is likely to witness a new era in retailing which will be defined by the emergence of new formats and, vastly improved collaboration among the various stakeholders and experimentation with concepts such as tourism, luxury and destination-focused retail and rural retail. Upcoming large townships, mixed-use retail developments, retail centres at transport nodes and in office districts, along with a research driven approach by developers, will assist in bringing in quality supply of the right size and in the right place - and hopefully addressing the demand from foreign brands waiting to tap the extensive and mostly under-exploited Indian market.
I V Subramaniam, Director – Quantum AMC has seen it all in his 22 years long career. He began his career in capital markets at Karvy Consultants just before the Harshad Mehta scam of 1992 and never looked back. He stoically maneuvered his career through years of experience gained with unhindered faith in his research of the companies and that too without losing his sleep even for one night (he tells us proudly). Nurturing the Quantum dream since 1996, this daydreamer believes in trust and integrity when looking for investment ideas and sticking on to the strategies is his success formula. Subramaniam feels that in coming days the markets will be at a substantially higher level than where it is currently. “By 2015, given the earnings growth in India, I expect the Sensex to be closer to 26,000,” he says. By Mayura Shanbaug
A little background about your company and yourself? I joined Quantum in 1996 as an analyst and spent years in researching Indian stocks for recommendations to international portfolios. 1997 to 2004 were great years of learning as I did research on Indian stocks for advising an international group Hansberger Global Investors, which was managing institutional assets. In the years 2000 to 2004 I also did research on Global companies in building materials industry and on utilities in emerging markets. Currently I am on the board of Quantum Asset Management Pvt ltd (QAMC) which has its own research and investment team. I was also the first fund manager for Quantum Long Term Equity Fund. I am also the MD and CIO at Quantum Advisors. Since 2000, I have managed India-dedicated Portfolios for India- based clients and since 2005, have been managing India dedicated portfolios for international clients.
have a very long term investment horizon, compared to many other traders/investors that I know of and respect. I also have patience to either wait for an idea to materialise into actual investment or see an investment to blossom over a long period. What gives you that edge? It is the years of experience and seeing the markets and companies evolve over the period of years. Investment also reflects the investor’s character. I generally am patient in many aspects and I tend to think long term in many areas. I believe in trust and integrity and that is what I search for when looking for investment ideas.
At what point had you given a thought to making a career in the stock markets? I got interested in stocks during my college days, when I was studying law. Therefore after my law days, I struggled a bit to get a foot holding the financial markets.
How do you pick your trades/investments? Do you use technical analysis, or fundamental data? I use fundamental data for decision making. This fundamental data could include company level data, identifying inflection points and triggers for unlocking the potential of the companies I invest or like. How would you describe your methodology? The method is to search for ideas at company specific levels. This means lot of ground work- not necessarily just company meetings, but meeting others from different fields as well. Many consumption ideas could just come from interacting with a variety of people and getting an idea on their consumption patterns. Sometimes as you meet different companies; it becomes easier to identify investment opportunity in related fields or in their vendor chain or distribution chain. Then digging deeper will allow me to find companies that meet criteria of a sound management. It is then valuations play an important role to decide whether to invest now or later. What appeals to you about Investing? Understanding different companies is like understanding people and what they need. The analysis helps in understandings which company’s business strategy is credible and which are not. So, investigating, analysing and backing an investment idea is mentally challenging and is very satisfying as well. I am not into trading.
What differentiates you from other Investors? I think it is the patience and the time horizon. I

able, it will be the biggest turnoff for investment.
When you put money on a trade and it goes against you, how do you decide when you’re wrong? First point is that I don’t trade. But if after my investment, the stock is down significantly, then I will revisit the fundamentals to check if I had missed out on anything. If there is no change in my view of the company then I will add more to the investment. However, if I was wrong in my understanding of the company, or something external or internal has taken place which has changed the fundamental case for investment, then I would close out the position. Sometimes, it would make sense to also sell out of an investment, if a better alternative becomes available.
Your success mantra ? Sticking to a strategy with which one is comfortable, is what makes an investor successful. So if you understand value well, then stick to value style of investing. Similarly if you understand momentum based trading then stick to it. Problem arises when we try to follow all the different strategies that we read about and then struggle to be successful.
Do you try to anticipate or follow market trends? I do not follow market trends or even anticipate them. Long ago I realised the futility of doing this. I completely agree with the thesis of many great investors that the market place is only to go and either buy from it for go and sell to it. However, I do believe in long term trends and markets will eventually reflect the long term earnings growth.
Any positions you ever lost sleep over? I did not lose sleep over any investment. However, I do reflect on decisions of the past and try to figure out the good and bad impact of the decision, including trying to identify if any biases have creeped in. To quote an example, in early 2000 I recommended a global conglomerate to one of our clients as the valuation was inexpensive. The trigger to unlock value that I had identified was the sale of their cement business. After my recommendation the share price had gone down significantly and I was unhappy as the client had made large investments. Subsequently the company sold its cement division and the share price surged. However, when it reached the price at which the client had made investment, I was so relieved that without doing deeper analysis I recommended an exit. The stock since then moved up by 5x. Here the problem with me was taking my eye away from the fundamentals and focusing on a point (the price at which the client had invested) which was not relevant – it is called reference bias in behavioural finance. The learning was to always stay focused on the fundamentals. What would make you wary about an Investment? If the quality of the management is question-
Of the tens of thousands of trades/investments that you have done, which was your best trade/investment? There were many investment ideas that I could think of, but I could name a couple of them, instead of just one name. Looking back I think the best investment was in a banking stock, which was a relatively new private sector bank in late 1990’s. I also liked investing in a watch making company in the late 90’s when the company was not doing well. I knew it was great brand during my college days, so digging deeper and looking at their strength’s in understanding the consumer, in distributing its products, the price points at which it was selling its product, I thought the company could come back from the problems it was facing then. Over the years it did well.
What is your take on the current market scenario, Indian as well as global? The current market scenario both in India and globally is influenced by the easy monetary policies undertaken in US, Europe, Japan and China. Given the unprecedented scale of this experiment, I am nervous and am not convinced that the shift from easy monetary policy to a normal policy will be smooth. The most sophisticated central banker- the Fed did not have a clue of the 2008 crisis. Therefore it is even more difficult for me to assume that they will get it right when it comes to tapering. So in order to hedge against an untested monetary policy, I feel the urge to be hedged and currently the only hedge I can think of is “Gold”.
Where do you see the Indian markets five years down the road? Any number for 2015? By 2015, given the earnings growth in India, I expect the Sensex to be closer to 26,000. At the end of 5 years, I see the markets at a substantially higher level than where it is currently again based on my assumption on earnings growth. The current market will have to face the eventuality of a normal liquidity condition. This means the markets will have to face the eventuality of US tapering its easy going monetary policy. While it is very difficult to predict the outcome of that tapering, the case for increasing interest rates is high. If easy monetary policy has resulted in lower interest rates, a tapering has to result in higher interest rates and that will have an impact on financial assets. Any final words? Invest for the long term, and do not speculate and do not use leverage for investment. Such tools of leverage are for the sophisticated investor with a large risk appetite.

As The Polls Near...
he year has begun on a tepid note and this will set the tone for the coming six months with politics and QE3. But politics is taking centre stage. The effects of taper are much more muted than the last time around but the recent opinion polls seem to have had a greater effect. Last week’s opinion polls show that in eight major cities in India namely Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad 44% people want to vote for AAP candidates whereas 58% want Modi as PM. This gives confusing signals and it is too early to evaluate. Markets don’t like confusion and uncertainty therefore they appear to be in a wait and watch mode with a downward bias. Optimism which was there a week ago has quickly changed to uncertainty and this clearly indicates that as pollsters do their job they will only create volatility in the run up to the elections. As political developments take centre stage market analysts are trying to don the role of political pundits and gauge which way the winds are blowing. And as is the inherent nature of analysts they look at week to week sometimes ever day to day developments leading to optimism and pessimism very quickly. Markets are looking at the AAP effect post their brief performance in the Delhi Government. The one thing that has impressed voters nationally is the speed at which Kejriwal and his team is taking decisions – 48 hours versus 2 years of indecision and inordinate delays of the UPA. The UPA hasn’t learnt its lessons yet. The Congress governments in states are still delaying or taking half baked decisions. Prithviraj Chavan in Maharashtra is one of the biggest Congress culprit CM’s. Inspite of a high command diktat he has virtually put Adarsh scam in cold storage again. That’s not all he has shot himself in the foot time and time again for the last two years by sitting on important fills – which directly affect the lives of common people in Maharashtra. Lakhs of sugarcane farmers in Maharashtra are unhappy with him, Pune Metro funds are all tied up but the waiting for CM’s decision for over a year when by now half the project could have been finished. These are just 2 examples. Considering that Maharashtra returned a sizable chunk of MP’s in UPA2 last time around it will take a severe beating in the coming elections thanks to indecision. The same is true of Andhra Pradesh. A state which has given the Congress the maximum number of MP’s in the current Lok Sabha. This time around the Congress faces a complete rout in the state due to absolute ridiculous handling of the Telangana bifurcation, which has caused more headaches than it has solved. After the 4 states elections on December 8, pollsters said that Congress would be down to 100 seats in the next Lok Sabha. But after AAP’s Delhi government performance AAP will create further dents into Congress bastions like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune and I wouldn’t be surprised if Congress is decimated just like in the Delhi elections and may just about manage 50 odd seats. Let’s take an objective look at UPA. Its leadership has completely lost credibility. Even the Gandhi trio is tainted with scams be it Priyanka (Vadra Scam) Rahul & Sonia (all other scams). Apart from Gandhi family they don’t have any leader worth the salt to lead a national campaign. That leaves regional parties like SP, BSP, TMC and AIDMK. SP has already lost most of its ground and from the current 22 Lok Sabha seat it could be down to single digit. Same with BSP. In total these four will get 80 seats or so. As on date AAP’s most optimistic tally could be 80 & Congress with 50 will be hard pressed to stitch together a coalition. On the other hand with YSR, Naidu, DMK, Yedurappa, etc. NDA can still romp home comfortably.

MUMBAI | MONDAY, JANUARY 13, 2014
« TOP VIEW Now there is a purist theory that overall demand gets suppressed if interest rates are higher. We don't see that evidence. In last four years, the RBI has increased policy rates almost 24-25 times. But it has had no impact on food inflation. So there is no evidence to show that it does. — Economic Affairs Secretary Arvind Mayaram

Markets Consolidate NSE India : CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Monday (January 13, 2014) By Dominic Rebello
REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY:
The Nifty rose marginally on Friday (January 10, 2014) a net 3.10 points (0.05%) and closed at the 6171 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 6178 points level. It then declined sharply into the red and registered the day’s low at the 6139 points level at 9.32 a.m. The index then rose sharply into the green and turned into a range bound movement until 1.20 p.m. It then rose further and registered the day’s high at the 6239 points level at 1.44 p.m. The index then declined sharply and turned into a range bound movement to close at the day on a flat note. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session and moved in a range of 100 points. Sentiment seemed bearish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 35 were losers, while 15 were gainers. Substantial buying was seen in IT, technology and FMCG stocks, while substantial selling was seen in realty, banking, metal and power stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 3.60%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors.
Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was negative. Amongst all the traded stocks, 454 were gainers, 944 were losers and 76 remained unchanged.
Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator is in the over-sold zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is below the slow D line (negative if it continues). RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 40 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).
MACD Indicator: The MACD fell below zero and is declining (negative if it continues). It is below its 9-day Average (negative).
oscillators discussed here are indicating a weak market but with a neutral bias.
Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 5958 points level. The next support is at the 5877 points level.
Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance is at the 6372 points level. The next resistance is at the 6424 points level.
Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 6183 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 6128. Support (2) = 6084. Resistance (1) = 6227. Resistance (2) = 6283. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY:
On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a third consecutive doji pattern. This indicates that the indecisiveness amongst investors continues. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the index is still below its 5, 15 and 25 days moving averages. Further, the 5 days moving average is below the 15 and 25 days moving ave rages and is declining. Moreover The velocity parameters too are negatively trended. All these indicate a negative bias. Investors are advised to avoid buying at current levels.
Work with strict stop losses on all positions
ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is below the –DI line but both lines are converging (positive if it continues). The ADX is falling while the Market Index is flat. No signal here.
MOVING AVERAGES (TREND INDICATORS) The index: Is below its 5-day average (at 6173) Negative. Is below its 15-day average (at 6241) Negative. Is below its 25-day average (at 6238) Negative. Is above its 200-day average (at 5924) Positive.

CMP: Rs. 1299 Target Rs. 1540 In response to investor concerns about HCLT’s balance sheet deterioration as revenue share of Infra. Svcs increases, we note that though 67.3% of FY13 incremental revenue came from Infra. Svcs, this has not affected the balance sheet as HCLT’s deals are not based on the now-obsolete assettakeover models that the erstwhile EDS (now part of HP) was known for. We believe that HCLT’s current P/E discount to its Tier-1 peers is undeserved and maintain Buy with an unchanged Dec’14 TP of Rs1,540. Fixed asset turnover improvement despite Infra Svcs led growth => asset light deals: Fixed Assets turnover has actually improved for HCLT from FY09 to FY13 (see table below and Exhibit 1) even as Infra. Svs proportion of revenue has nearly doubled. While it still lags industry leaders like TCS and Infosys in terms of Fixed Asset turnover due to the Axon acquisition that had added INR33.5Bn to Goodwill in FY09, it leads these peers when excluding Goodwill. Translation exchange differences relating to the goodwill added a further INR8.4Bn to HCLT’s goodwill over FY12. DSOs incl. Unbilled Rev. similar to TCS and Infosys; part of FP contract models: At 90.4 days, HCLT’s FY13 DSOs including unbilled revenues is comparable to Infosys’ 86.6 days and TCS’ 99.9 days for their respective FY13 (see Exhibit 1). We think that an increase in DSOs is bound to happen with a shift to fixed price execution that is milestone-based as milestones for large programs may not be easy to invoice monthly and an increase in unbilled revenue becomes unavoidable under these circumstances. Maintaining estimates; maintain Buy: HCLT is currently trading at a steep discount of 18% to Infosys and 27% to TCS in P/E terms. We maintain our estimates and maintain our Buy recommendation with an unchanged Dec’14 TP of Rs 1,540 (14x 1-Year Fwd EPS at Dec’14 Our target PE still factors an 18% discount to our target multiple of 17x for TCS and if investor perception regarding Infra. Svcs improves, a rerating can provide further upside. The recent resumption in outperformance could thus continue. Key risks to our call are 1) a dip in win-rates for large Infrastructure Svcs deals and 2) sharp INR appreciation.
INDIA INFOLINE CALLS A ‘BUY’ ON BANK OF INDIA
CMP: Rs. 230 Target Rs. 265 Relatively better asset quality trends to continue in Q3 FY14: Bank of India is likely to deliver yet another quarter of resilient asset quality performance. Slippages in Q3 FY14 are likely to be near or lower than Q2 FY14 level of Rs14.5bn marking fifth consecutive quarter of restrained stress (annualized delinquencies have ranged 1.5-2.6%) despite extremely challenging macro. In fact, gross NPL ratio is expected to improve on sequential basis further aided by strong recoveries/upgradations, sale of NPAs to ARCs (~Rs12bn) and brisk credit growth. Restructuring is estimated to be in-line with previous quarters (Rs8-9bn) but the stock is expected to decline with 50% of restructured SEB exposure being converted into bonds as per the package. Earnings performance to be sequentially much better: Our reworked estimate of BOI’s Q3 FY14 net profit stands at Rs7.3bn (upgraded from Rs5.8bn in recently released preview) which represents 17% jump qoq. Domestic loan book growth has been strong for the bank driven by multiple segments and sectors. Blended NIM is expected to remain stable at 2.4%. With exposure to bulk deposits at meager 4-5%, overall cost of deposits is unlikely to have been significantly impacted by the spike in wholesale rates. Improved fee growth witnessed during Q2 FY14 is likely to sustain in Q3 FY14. We estimate credit cost to be sequentially lower at annualized 90-100bps with continuance of manageable slippages and a relatively better provisioning cover (63% as at Sept-end). Unlike peers, BOI was carrying much lower (~Rs1.8bn) unamortized MTM losses on its AFS/HFT investments portfolio as at Sept-end which the bank may choose to provide entirely in Q4 FY14. Valuation recovery to continue: BOI’s persistent outperformance to peers on asset quality front is translating into valuation catch-up with the large PSU banks. In our view, the bank’s valuation would continue to witness an early cyclical recovery than the overall space. The likelihood of a resilient Q3 FY14 performance should support stock price in the near term. Please send all business and corporate related mails to business@afternoondc.in

‘Block of Asset’, A Particular Class Of Classified Assets
I have surrendered my shares in a listed company in response to an open offer from a multi-national. I have received the sale consideration from the company directly. I was holding these shares for several years. Please advice whether the transaction is exempt from capital gain since it is a long term capital gain? —Ajit Patil, Cuffe Parade The transaction is not exempt from capital gains though it is a long term capital gain. A transaction would be exempt from capital gain only if it is executed on a recognized stock exchange and Securities Transaction Tax is paid on the transaction. In your case the transaction has taken place directly with the company and no Securities Transaction Tax is paid. Hence, it is not exempt.
Could you explain the term ‘Block of Asset’ which is used in Income Tax Act for claiming depreciation? —Raj Sharma, Marine Lines Block of Asset means a particular class or group under which the assets are classified. The assets owned by an assessee could be of various natures. But there may be similarity in them i.e. chairs, tables, desk, windows etc are classified as Furniture and Fixture and grouped as one Block. The same could be the case for office equipment or various plant & machinery used in a factory. They are clubbed as one group. For each group a fixed rate of depreciation is allowed. The depreciation is allowed for the full year, if the asset, in the group is used for 182 days or more. If part of the asset in the group is used for less than 182 days, then only that specified part will be allowed depreciation at 50% of normal depreciation. Depreciation is allowed as an expenditure, only if you have income under the head Profits from Business and Profession. I have been allowed to use a luxury car by my company. Could you explain to me the valuation of perquisite in respect of the car? —A.V.Subramanium, Peddar Road I understand that the car is owned or hired by the company and it is being allowed to be used by you for official and personal purpose. If it is used exclusively for the office purpose and proper log book is maintained then there is no perquisite taxable in your hands at all. « INSURANCE
I heard that all the life insurance are having the same features from 2014. Where ever you take the benefits are going to be the same. Just want to confirm the same. —Luvkush Dubey, Thane There is no such guideline by IRDA that all policies will be the same. Each company can actually do some product innovation and tweak the products. The policies are becoming more Customer Friendly There is talk of: • Service Tax on LIC Premiums • Revised Mortality Rates from 1994 table to 2006-2008 table • Compulsory Increase in Death Benefits with at least 10 times the premium • Rise in Surrender Value • Regulation on Agent’s Commission so as to curb mis-selling for higher revenue There would be more than 400 new plans in the industry this year and all pertaining to the above changes. So, there would be large number of policies to choose from and you
should not worry at all regarding the same as all of them would be customer oriented.
I am tyre a dealer and wish to know whether I can get the insurance done to the tyres for my customers, irrespective of whether the tyre has failed of manufacturing defect or not like it is being done for mobile phones. —Vijay Sinhala, Vashi Yes, you can surely cover your stocks. Wherever there is a chance of Financial Loss, it can be insured. This particular thing is covered under Fire and Burglary Policy which can be applied from any General Insurance company like National Insurance Company Limited.
You need to declare all your stocks under an excel sheet with the following points: 1. Item 2. Quantity 3. Make 4. Year of Purchase 5. Model No 6. Serial Number 7. RTE Per PC 8. Price
Along with the total amount you wish to be insured and reason for coverage. Once you mention all of this, you can apply for the coverage of the place against fire, burglary, damage, flood, etc.
I have LIC Endowment Assurance Policy (T.N.14) plan for Term-30 years which started on May 2010 and I pay a Premium of Rs. 38,000 per annum. However, I have planned to discontinue my policy after paying 5th year (May 2014). I want to know how much surrender value will I get? —Naresh Rathi, Colaba Why are you planning to surrender your plan? There should be some reason why you took it, right? The plan that you have taken is one of the best plans of LIC and there should no justification for breaking the same. Also, this policy being a Traditional Plan has Guaranteed Surrender Benefit of 30% of total premiums paid less First Year's Premium. So, the Surrender Benefit would be in tune of 30% of (Rs 38000(Annualized Premium) X 4)= Rs 45,600 since the first year's premiums are not included in the calculation of the Surrender Benefit. Thus, your Surrender Benefit would be Rs 45,600 whereas you have paid a premium of Rs 1,90,000. So my suggestion is, if you do not have any major financial concerns, please continue the plan till the end. It provides forced savings and pretty good returns by Endowment standards along with coverage.

AAP’s Vishwas takes on Rahul in Amethi

A
METHI: The Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday took on the Gandhi dynasty with its leader Kumar Vishwas throwing a challenge to Rahul Gandhi against whom he is expected to contest from this constituency in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. Taking on Gandhi at a rally in his home turf, Vishwas said the 'Rajkumar' had just indulged in "symbolism" by eating in houses of dalits and not raised even a single question related to people of Amethi in Parliament in the past 10 years. He asked the people to vote for an 'aam aadmi' instead of a prince. A group of protesters waved black flags while some others hurled stones and eggs at two buses ferrying party supporters to the rally venue, in Gandhi Chowk area. Window panes of the buses
got damaged due to the stone pelting and police resorted to mild force to control the mob after which the buses left for the rally venue. Undeterred by the protests,
Vishwas, who has vowed to contest against Rahul in Amethi, said the time has come for the people to get 'freedom' from the dynasty. "Now Amethi is no longer subservient to the dynastic rule. Their reign has gone. Democracy has taken roots and there is freedom," he said while referring to the success of AAP, led by Arvind Kejriwal, in Delhi. The AAP leader also targeted Sonia Gandhi, calling her 'Maharani' (queen). "You (electorate) have ensured victory of Yuvraj, Maharaja and Maharani.... Now this is the time you all should elect a servant by pressing the right button. "If they think that I will leave Amethi if they show black flags and hurl eggs and stones, They are wrong. It's fight between 'aam aadmi' and 'Rajkumar'. I am not going to leave Amethi. I may remain alive or my dead body will leave here in the next three months....We were not afraid when we raised corruption issue of son-in-law of Maharani...," the AAP leader said reffering to Robert Vadra, sonin-law of Sonia Gandhi. Prez, PM greet people on harvest fests N
EW DELHI: President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday greeted the nation on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, Lohri and Pongal and hoped that the festivals will herald growth and progress. In his message the President said, "I convey my greetings and best wishes to all citizens of India and wish them every prosperity and happiness. "May the celebrations reinforce the ties that bind us together as a nation, in peace and harmony. May the harvest herald the beginning of further growth and progress and inspire us to work for the overall devel-
opment of our country." Singh noted that Sankranti indicates the beginning of a traditionally auspicious period of the year. Lohri and Pongal are harvest festivals, and an occasion to celebrate the contribution of farmers and traditional ethos, culture and economy. "All these festivals mark a new beginning," he said in his message. "May these festivals bring prosperity and joy to all," the prime minister said. Lohri falls on Monday while Pongal and Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on Tuesday.
E-returns: CBDT may soon do away with submission of ITRV form N EW DELHI: In what could be good news for lakhs of taxpayers filing their I-T returns online, CBDT is mulling doing away with the mandatory submission of paper verification printout to its processing centre in Bangalore. Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the apex office to formulate policies for the Income Tax department, was prompted to take this "customer-friendly" step after it was recently informed that lakhs of such paper statements -- ITRV -have not reached its Central Processing Centre (CPC) despite people filing their e-returns online. CBDT is now considering either bringing a notification to make a change in the rules or an amendment in the I-T Act stipulating that taxpayers filing their returns online will no longer need to send ITRV through post to the Bangalore office. The new measure, deliberated upon by the Finance Ministry and CBDT, will mean that the taxpayer will not even have to procure a digital signature as the department feels it has enough technology at its disposal to check cases of fake returns or under-reported I-T returns. "There have been regular
letters by taxpayers and other bodies to the board in this regard. Recently, it was noticed that lakhs of statements did not reach the CPC. The board may now totally do away with the procedure of sending by post the paper statement of an e-return. "The decision could happen soon as this concerns a lot of taxpayers and will be seen as customer-friendly," a source told PTI. The thinking at the highest level is that e-filing should be "hassle free and sans any glitches", which will prompt more number of people to file their tax returns this way. The I-T department is also bolstered by the fact that more and more number of people are opting to file their returns online. According to current procedures, when a taxpayer files his or her returns online, the person is required to mandatorily send the 'ITRV' by post to the I-T department's CPC based in Bangalore within 120 days. The CPC, in return, sends an electronic acknowledgement to the tax return filer. The problem arises when the document sent by post does not reach the CPC because of lapses on the part of the taxpayer or some other reason.

Three ordinances set to lapse
THREE ordinances, including one which provides SEBI greater powers, are set to lapse next week as they cannot be repromulgated since the Winter session of Parliament has not been prorogued so far. Besides the ordinance on SEBI, ordinances on Medical Council of India and another which gives Election Commission limited powers to make changes in Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe constituencies where some castes have been either excluded or included between the 2001 census and May 2012, will lapse on January 16.

What made you accept this show? I have always loved to watch SAB TV which is a niche comedy channel and I have also worked in their previous show ‘Chidiya Ghar’ and I enjoyed that experience. Comedy comes easily to me and I like to bring smiles and laughter on their faces especially because everyone is stressed with their own problems and need a relief which this show and my character will provide. Comedy is not easy, but my past roles have given me much needed experience in it. Hope people like it and they will like my new serial, new role and new look.

Now, homeopaths across the state can prescribe allopathic medicines after a course in pharmacology, in order to reach aid to rural masses. The move seems populist, says Gajanan Khergamker
J
ust last week the state cabinet gave its nod for homeopathy doctors to prescribe allopathic medicines given that they take the one year-long certification course in pharmacology. This move, much to the benefit of around 62,000 homoeopathic doctors in the state, received flak from the allopathic doctors’ association. The Indian Medical Associations (IMA) Maharashtra is contemplating challenging the cabinet’s decision in court. “A MBBS student learns pharmacology in the initial period of the four-and-half-year-long course. They have three years, including their internship period, to familiarise themselves with pharmacology. So, how can a homoeopath learn it in a period of a year,” Secretary of IMA-Maharashtra Dr Jayesh Lele said to a section of media. It was over 30 years back when the homeopaths had first asked the government to allow them to practice combined medicine. However, allowed or not, reports from different state, over the years, have proved that alternative-medicine doctors are known to practice allopathy. There had been reports of an Ayurvedic doctor killing patients by performing surgeries or another treating a patient for ‘acidity’ when the patient was having chest pain owing to heart blockage.

and apathy from doctors in both government-run hospitals and private institutions. The RTI application was filed by a civil society group People for Better Treatment (PBT) comprising doctors, ex-medicos, lawyers and individuals who have faced some sort of ‘medical negligence’ in their lives. The PBT had filed a RTI query in February 2011, seeking the status of complaints received against doctors by the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC). The reply to the application said that 171 cases had been declared as ‘not to proceed any further,’ 104 cases had been kept as ‘cases under consideration,’ 61 cases has been ‘closed or dropped’ and for another 25 cases, were labelled as ‘charges could not be substantiated’. Maha decides to permit homeopaths to practice allopathy after course Maharashtra’s decision to allow homeopaths to practice allopathy after completing a-year-long certification course was prompted by shortage of doctors in rural areas in the state. The state came upon this decision because it is of the view that allopath doctors usually abstain from mandatory rural services. The one-year course named Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology will be conducted by the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik. The State’s decision was followed by the recommendation of the 13-member committee set up in 2012. Other states like Karnataka too are contemplating allowing Ayurvedic doctors to practice allopathy to overcome shortage of doctors in their own states. But for a country like India which is still in its nascent stage when it comes to dealing with medical negligence; and with its inability to efficiently deal with the quacks nuisance that is persistent in both rural and urban areas, allowing doctors from alterative fields to practice modern medicine can prove disastrous. It needs to deal with the prevailing issues of negligence, illegal crosspathy and quacks before it introduces new changes which could be blatantly abused by quacks and unethical doctors, especially in rural areas where there is a higher chance of it being misused. inputs from Prerna Pandey

CONVENTION CONDEMNS TERRORISM, VICTIMISATION OF MUSLIMS Religious heads of various faiths draw up a 10-point resolution to address issues of minorities By A Staff Reporter

oming out strongly against terrorism and also victimisation of Muslims while probing terror charges, the Jamiat Ulema Maharashtra, on Saturday, adopted a 10point resolution which among others asks the Centre and State Government to form tribunals with adequate powers. They also voiced their demand for reservation for

At the convention of Protection of Democracy, at the Azad Maidan on Sunday, a resolution was adopted unanimously wherein a press conference was addressed by Maulana Arshad Madni, Jamait ul Ulema-Hind, Jagatguru Shankaracharya Adhikshanandji Maharaj Puri Peeth Mathura and Vincent Michael Concessao, Archbishop Emeritus of Delhi. "The issues of minorities needs to be addressed. Today a lot of innocent youth are victimised. We all would have to sit together to see how this stops,” Madni said. “Today the condition of minorities is known to everyone. We have to see how it can be addressed,” he added. Maulana Syed Arshad Madni, also
said that judgments have come for many lawsuits, in which courts have discharged accused persons of allegation and have acquitted them. “Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde has also admitted though belatedly during last few days, that innocent Muslims have been arrested. State governments do not pursue seriously the legal action with regards to withdrawal of cases pertaining to innocent Muslims arrested on charges of terrorism,” he said, adding that lives of innocent youth have been ruined. “Their prime goes in jail and finally they are discharged...how do you compensate the years lost?” he queried. One of the resolutions demanded
that the Constitutional hindrances in giving reservations to Muslims must be removed or amended. “It is necessary to express the painful fact that during last 20 years, religion of Islam and Muslims all over the world are alleged to perpetrate terrorism which is intolerance unwarranted and totally uncalled for. This is the result of imbalance among the global powers. Few world powers have led an organised conspiracy quite consciously to make a monster of terrorism and thus they have driven this condemnable moment; unfortunately our country is also a victim of this terrorism,” delegates at the convention said. The resolution demanded that a tribunal of retired judges on the

mise has to be discussed. I cannot say anything myself. General V.K. Singh is a big man. If he has somebody there, he can discuss a compromise and if any transaction of give and take has to be made then that too can be done, but this case has to be suppressed. At this, it struck my mind. I said, Chief Minister, you have people. If you want to, you can send them. The reply from the other end came that no, if I could have sent I would certainly have sent. I don’t wish to talk to Kiran Kumar Reddy, because he does not like me or I do not like him, therefore I want that General V.K. Singh should get this work done. I said, I have given

The person calling identifies himself as Odisha’s Industry Minister, Badri Patra, and says that our Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik, wants to talk to you on a very urgent matter. After this the person says that you stood by Anna Hazare a lot and after Annaji’s fast, the way the Lokpal Bill was passed and the role you played, all of us have a lot of praise for you. He repeated that Naveenji wants to talk to you about a very urgent matter. I said, the Lokpal Bill was passed by MPs. In this, Parliament had a role, what is my role? And, I said, as for talking with Naveen Patnaik, I have no objection, I will talk to him. Then the person said that Naveen Patnaik wants to talk to General V. K. Singh. I said, then you should call General V. K. Singh. At this, the person replied that I want if you could call General Sahib and give him the message that Naveen Patnaik wants to talk to him on a personal matter, it would be better. I said, all right, if Naveen Patnaik has some personal work with General V.K. Naveen Patnaik Singh, I’ll tell him. your Badri Patraji his number, you can talk to him directly. The first doubt was why a MinI called General V.K. Singh. At that ister, a Chief Minister, with whom time General V.K. Singhji was with I had no familiarity, should want Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in Bengluru. I to contact General V.K. Singh said to General Sahib that through Santosh Bhartiya. The Odisha’s Chief Minister, Naveen second doubt was that I have Patnaik, has some personal work heard Naveen Patnaik’s voice on with you and wants to talk to you TV, though I have not heard him – Odisha’s Industries Minister speaking in Hindi. I will get this work done through them. I said, get your work done through whoever you want, we people are in Delhi, we are ordinary people. The question that arises is who are these people who are getting this done and why did they want to talk through me to General V.K. Singh about helping in an accident compromise case? Perhaps these people wanted to get a voice sample of mine and of General V.K. Singh. After taking a
and when the correspondent made enquiries it was found that the phone was registered in Goa and is in the name of Digambar Kamat. Digamber Kamat is a former Chief Minister of Goa. This incident got me somewhat worried. I felt that in the name of a sting operation this was a planned conspiracy by either the Intelligence Agencies or people in India who wanted to malign General V.K Singh or Indian journalism. In fact, the attempt was to take a voice sample, there is no doubt about that. The lesson that can be gleaned from this is that if anybody calls you and says that I am so and so speaking, and it is a person with whom you are not familiar or have not interacted, never trust such a call and get the phone number verified by another person. In the last few days there have been many travesties in the country in the name of sting operations and now an attempt is being made at a new kind of sting operation so that General V.K. Singh or I get encircled by questions.
Making the episode public
General V.K. Singh voice sample, the voice can be used through a good artist or computer in any kind of conversation. Or perhaps there could be some other motive behind this, which I could not understand. After this I found out that Badri Patra was Odisha’s Minister of Higher Education and not its Industries Minister as the person had claimed on the phone.
The incident got me worried When I got Badri Patra’s number and called on the number my correspondent gave me, an older voice answered, whereas the voice that had spoken before had been that of a young person. I said to Badri Patra I am Santosh Bhartiya speaking, and he said yes, tell me. I asked, a short while ago perhaps I spoke to you? and he said no, but if there is something tell me. I said, there is nothing at the moment, if there is later I will call. I again called my Odisha correspondent and asked him to call on the number and find out who it was. When the correspondent called, a voice answered in a somewhat hard tone
Who can these people be? Either it is the weapons lobby of brokers which wants to target General V.K. Singh’s prestige and integrity with question marks. Or then there are some people in journalism itself who do PR journalism and as the saying goes are ‘more loyal than the king’ and do something or the other in the interests of those who do not like principled journalism. Or thirdly, perhaps it is the Intelligence Agencies which are tapping our phones day and night. Incidents like this cause me concern that in the near future something will happen which will be akin to throwing mud on one’s integrity and prestige. I do not believe that any foreign agency could be involved, but I do believe that some agency has hired some people so that they can spin a big conspiracy against General V.K. Singh and me and trap us in that conspiracy. But the truth remains the truth. I am not filing any FIR, but I am making the episode public, so that if any agency takes notice, I have that number with me on which the conversation with ‘that person’ took place. General V.K. Singh also has the number from which the person who claimed to be Odisha’s Industries Minister spoke. We know that Intelligence Agencies do not have the time for conspiracies against General V.K. Singh or against me as they are involved in very important work. But we are taking a step in the direction of fulfilling our duty by placing this entire episode before our readers.

To the growing list of headless aviation agencies such as the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security and Pavan Hans Helicopters Ltd one may also add the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Airport Authority of India (AAI). While the first two organisations have been without a top person for more than a year, the DGCA and AAI are going to lose their chiefs this month-end. DGCA chief Arun Mishra is likely to return to his
West Bengal cadre or head out of the country on a foreign assignment. Meanwhile AAI chairman V.P. Aggarwal is, sources say, awaiting word on his extension after finishing his five-year term this month. Interestingly among those vying for Mishra’s post is Air India’s CMD Rohit Nandan! Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh reiterates that all vacant positions will be filled at the earliest but so far it doesn’t seem so!
Netagiri Beckons
Babus, it is said, are keen students of weather phenomenon, especially the winds of change. With elections looming on the horizon it is more than netas who are making the appropriate moves. Recently former Home Secretary R.K. Singh and former Petroleum Secretary R.S. Pandey joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a move which raised quite a few eyebrows in Delhi’s babu corridors. Sources say that they are likely to contest the Lok Sabha polls from Bihar. But apparently some more civil servants are expected to switch to netagiri. One name that is doing the rounds is that of former envoy to UK Jaimini Bhagwati. A 1976 batch IFS officer, Bhagwati has served in the Union Finance Ministry in India and World Bank in Washington. He has also been India’s ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and EU. Watch out this space for more updates.
Babus Won’t Budge
The UPA Government is finding it difficult to make central departments put information in the public domain under the Right to Information Act (RTI). The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), which had provided detailed guidelines to central departments, including the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), President’s Secretariat and the Cabinet Secretariat, has admitted that the response has been poor. Most Ministries and Departments have failed to send compliance reports back to DoPT. Sources say that Sandeep Jain, Director at DoPT, has written another memo to all central departments to detail how they have complied with the guidelines on implementing transparency under the Act. Apparently DoPT Secretary S.K. Sarkar has now drawn a rather detailed roadmap towards achieving this lofty goal. But will the response be any different? Don’t bet on it! — Dilip Cherian

Finch century helps Australia thrash England
M
elbourne: A superb century from opener Aaron Finch helped Australia to a comprehensive six-wicket win over England in the first one-day international at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. After being dropped by Gary Ballance when he was on just eight, Finch continued to blast 121 runs from 128 balls as Australia won with 4.2 overs to spare. Finch rode his luck early in his innings but quickly seized control, racing to 50 from just 47 balls and outpacing opening partner David Warner. Finch andWarner put on 163 for the opening wicket but not without some controversy. Warner was given a reprieve by the television umpire when he was on 22 despite the Australian opener accepting that a low catch claimed by wicketkeeper Jos Buttler had carried. Warner, who had walked to the boundary, was recalled to the middle and went on to make 65. He was eventually dismissed holing out to Ed Stokes on the boundary off part-time spinner Joe Root, and when Chris Jordan bowled Shane Watson for a duck two runs later England had a slim hope of pegging Australia back. But Finch and captain Michael Clarke (43) quickly took the game away from England with a 72-run partnership, which ended when

post what had looked like a competitive total. Ballance, who came to the crease when England were struggling at 22-2, held the innings together before accelerating towards the end when quick runs were needed. He shared in an 83-run partnership with Morgan, who blasted his 20th ODI half-century off just 47 balls with five fours and a towering six. England had earlier won the toss, with skipper Alastair Cook having no hesitation in batting first on a flat MCG wicket. But Cook's miserable tour of Australia continued when he fell for four, edging Clint McKay to wicketkeeper Brad Haddin. McKay struck again to remove the equally out of form Root, who was trapped in front leg before for three with the score on 22. Ian Bell (41) tried to launch a rescue mission, hitting two fours and a six off Glenn Maxwell, but with the score on 62-2 he went for another heave over midwicket and was clean bowled by left arm spinner Xavier Doherty for 41. That wicket brought Morgan to the crease and the Irishman played superbly, showing a confidence missing from the English Test players over the Ashes series. Some big hitting late in the innings from Buttler (34) and Tim Bresnan (16) allowed England to reach a defendable total, but it was not enough against the rampant Australian batting line-up. BRIEF SCORES: England 269 for seven in 50 overs [Gary Ballance 79, Eoin Morgan 50, Craig McKay 3/44] lost to Australia 270 for four in 45.4 overs [Aaron Finch 121, David Warner 65] by six wickets.
Bengal trump Railways, enter Ranji semis K
olkata: A spirited Bengal downed bitter foes Railways by 48 runs in their controversy-filled match to set up a Ranji Trophy semifinal clash against Maharashtra, at the Eden Gardens. Set a target of 271, Railways were bundled out for 222 in 83.3 overs with Laxmi Ratan Shukla leading from the front taking 3/45. Also, Ashoke Dinda (2/77), Sourav Sarkar (2/22) and Shib Shankar Paul (2/47) returned with two apiece to take Bengal to the semis for the first time since 2006-07. Needing 154 to win at the start of the day, Railways most trusted batting combination of Mahesh Rawat (14) and Arindam Ghosh (50) looked to threaten the Bengal camp under overcast conditions after Dinda gave the first breakthrough in the 10th over in the form of Nitin Bhille (5). But it was once again the Bengal skipper who stood out, this time with the ball to send back Rawat while the veteran Paul, with his immaculate line and length, forced danger man Ghosh to make an error derailing the Railways. Ghosh's finely executed innings of 50 from 107 balls with eight fours came to an end after he was deceived by a fine late outswinger from Paul. In fact, Bengal dropped four catches -- by Lahiri, Shukla, Dinda and Arnab Nandi to prolong their wait. Paul broke into an impromptu 'Gangnam Style' jig after dismissing Karn Sharma while Sarkar wiped off
team spirit as they came back strongly with back to back wins against Uttar Pradesh (home) and Tamil Nadu (away) in their last two league fixtures to make the quarters as the third team from group B. Now with Tiwary expected to be in the semis line-up and Saha back in his elements after two half-centuries against in the match, Bengal would certainly fancy their chances against Maharashtra in their chase for a third Ranji title. Brief Scores: Bengal 317 & 267 bt Railways 314 & 222 all out 83.3 overs by 48 runs.

Pakistan in second Test
DUBAI: Sri Lanka produced a professional performance to register their biggest victory over Pakistan by nine wickets in the second Test in Dubai, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Paceman Suranga Lakmal took all three wickets to fall on the fifth morning to finish with a careerbest 4-78 to wrap up Pakistan's second innings for 359 before Sri Lanka knocked off the meager 137-run target for one wicket.
Kaushal Silva of Sri Lanka leaves the field after getting bowled by Saeed Ajmal during the second cricket Test match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai.
In achieving the victory, Sri Lanka also defied the cloudy weather in Dubai and rain forecast for later Sunday. Opener Dimuth Karunaratne (62 not out) hit the winning runs after putting on 124 for the first wicket with Kaushal Silva who fell after scoring 58. Kumar Sangakkara remained unbeaten on nine. Pakistan's lowest defended target was 127 achieved against New Zealand at Hamilton in 1993, when they dismissed their opponents for 93 but Sri Lanka ensured the good work was not lost. Sri Lanka had previously beaten Pakistan by eight wickets on two occasions in 45 Tests between the two nations. In a surprise move Pakistan opened the bowling with off-spinner Mohammad Hafeez but both openers played with authority. Silva hit five boundaries before trapped leg-before by Saeed Ajmal. Karunaratne hit eight boundaries off 125 balls. Ajmal was once again ineffective, having now taken five wickets in two matches. Pakistan will be desperate to level the series in the third Test starting in Sharjah from Thursday to avoid their first-ever series defeat in United Arab Emirates, their adopted base for cricket since 2010 because of security fears back home. The first Test ended in a draw in Abu Dhabi.

MUMBAI | MONDAY, JANUARY 13, 2014 In what way will the initiative by the All England Club and the Wimbledon Foundation benefit India and its players? There will be enormous benefits. I have been with the Road to Wimbledon since 2002 and there have been 20,000 students each year playing in their clubs and schools with the best ones coming through to play in the finals at Wimbledon. We like to think that this is an opportunity for Indians to really grow. There is a great tradition and history of grass court tennis. We are just in a couple of cities this year, but hopefully we can go to other cities in the coming years.
How long will this program take for kids of the age category of 14 or 16 to go on and compete on the international stage? We are really targeting the under 14 age group. This is not about producing a Wimbledon champion but to make the game more accessible. If in the long run, they can continue and follow their dreams, that would be fantastic. I have been following this program for the past 11 years and it is fantastic to see how the standards have improved.

He is a traditional ‘serve and volley’ player and came close to winning a Grand Slam title as many as four times. Englishman TIM HENMAN was once touted as the ‘fond’ Wimbledon hopeful. Here in an exclusive interview, Henman speaks to NEIL JOSHI about the All England Club and Wimbledon Foundation's initiative to coach Indian players and accordingly provide them an opportunity to play in England. He dwelt on the need for Indian players to play on grass, the changing profile of the game and on former greats coaching the modern day champions.
E H T N I T A H Y M W O R H T T ON’
You have been in Delhi and in Mumbai and could gauge a jist of the talent here. How different are the children back home with respect to their game? I think it is very similar. We had three days in Delhi and now I am in Mumbai. I have been very impressed with
W
the level of boys and the girls. One of the important aspects is to understand the physical and the mental demands. They are talented players and have very good technique, but there is too much generalisation to say, they all need to get fitter and stronger. But it is a very important aspects of the game, especially later on in their career. We see the players playing on television for three-four hours and they are so fast, fit and strong and also they got to understand the commitment and dedication on the court. So when they come on the court, and face the first ball, the should be ready to give their hundred percent, if they do so, they will be successful.
INTERVIEW
Do you feel players have forgotten to play on grass courts as compared to the players of the 80s and 90s? That is right but you also need to understand, the grass has changed at Wimbledon, it is a grass which makes the ball travel slower and makes it bounce higher. So I think, you are inevitably going to see far less serve and volley tennis. For me right now, the game has been slowerr than its even been. Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic have won 36 Grand Slams titles between them and it has been incredible to watch. Having said that, I would like to see more players serving and volleying. For that to really happen, we need to make the surfaces different. We don't have indoor fast courts or grass which is so fast as was in the past and if there is something I would change, that would be it. How much has tennis changed since Federer came along and since Pete Sampras left the scene? A lot has changed from the early 90's and the early 2000's. It was a serving competition and rallies were just three-four shots long and it wasn't such a good spectacle for the fans and television. We have seen the surfaces get a little abrasive and the balls heavier which gets a little difficult to dominate the serve. I think
G N I R G N COACHI the players now are returning better and the rallies are much longer and predominantly played from the baseline. For me, the spectacle right now is better, than it’s ever been but there should be opportunities for the players to come to the net.
Has power played an important role which has diminished the style quotient from the modern game? The way the young players are being taught, there is less emphasis on the front of the court rather on the serve and baseline. It is important that volleying doesn't die out.
Racquets have become lighter and stronger, with Babolat making their racquets with sensors, how will this benefit the tennis players? I don't know how that is going to impact. For me racquet technology hasn't changed over a great deal. The strings have had the biggest impact with the players able to string the racquets little loaser which gives more spin on the ball and control on the baseline. With a chip in the racquet, the players may learn from their matches. You recently commented that this era of tennis is the toughest. How do you substantiate this? I look at Federer, Nadal and Djokovic and I look at 36 Grand Slams titles between them. I don't think there ever has been an era like this. My thinking also emphasises on how well Murray has done to win two Slams what a tough task he has on hand on winning more.
There has been too much talks about Federer hanging his boots, are people going overboard with this? It is ridiculous to write such things about him, in my opinion he is the best player to play tennis and we should enjoy watching him while we can and what he has achieved in the game, he has
earned the right as long as he wants to play and enjoying it. It is a short career span and there is plenty of time to be retired. How do you see the career of Somdev Devverman panning out? He has had some good results and he need to build and develop the game in order to gain momentum. If he can do that then he can have some good results. He can be an inspiration here as some kids can come and watch him here and hopefully follow his footsteps.
With coaches of the likes of Boris Becker, Ivan Lendl and Stefan Edberg coaching the top guns, would you throw your hat in the ring? Not for me. I have a wife and three children at home and I don't like travelling too much. So to work with a top player doesn't appeal to me. But I am very interested how these relationships are going to work. [van Lendl has obviously done a great job with Andy Murray and may be Djokovic and Federer have looked to that and thought how can I add to my team? So I am interested to see if Becker and Edberg can help their causes.
Do you think best players make the best of coaches? It doesn't necessarily mean if you are a good player, you will be a good coach. But I think Becker and Edberg's experience and their knowledge is immense, I am sure they will have something to offer. Patrick Rafter has announced a comeback to tennis and would partner Leyton Hewitt for the Australian Open doubles, what do you read in this comeback? It has taken me by surprise. I don't think that he will make a comeback, he is great for the tournament, great for the fans and they are great friends. They have a great Davis Cup history together but I don't think we will see Rafter playing many more weeks on the tour.
