“T

It should be Sena, this time around: Jains

Sena lost the plot, it’s MNS all the way: Marathas

he Marathas are now quite disillusioned with the Shiv Sena particularly after Bal Thackeray’s demise. They feel that the party has lost the plot and the leadership isn’t as dashing as it used to be. Instead, the emergence of a strong Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has grabbed the fancy of the new-age Maratha. “A lot of Marathas will opt for MNS now. Raj Thackeray has provided a glimmer of hope for the local Maratha who was Samidha Salve disillusioned with the Shiv Sena”, feels Samidha Salve. Anyway, the performance of MNS, the last time around, matching Sena’s has inspired a lot of MNS supporters who feel that the party headed by a firebrand Raj Thackeray could elbow out the others, this time around.

T

Because of Modi wave, it’ll be Sena: Maharashtrians

here is a huge pro-Modi wave in South Central Mumbai too. A lot of pro-Sena Maharashtrians feel that Eknath Gaikwad has not worked for the people and that the sitting MP’s work was restricted to just erecting sheds in Dharavi. “A lot of Maharashtrians voted for MNS in the last elections, but Urvi Belekar this time around, I think they will opt for Shiv Sena’s Rahul Shewale”, feels Urvi Belekar. “The Modi wave is so strong that most Maharashtrians may opt for Shiv Sena this time around”, she says. That apart, the Sena candidate has said that areas like Shivaji Park, Mahim, Matunga, Naigaon BDD chawl, Wadala have many old buildings that need to be redeveloped. Shewale has maintained that the he will try to get as much help from the Centre to assist those which, according to a BMC survey, need to be repaired or are dangerous to live in. These issues are dear to the middle-class voter who will be in favour of Shewale coming to power.

G

Driven by Modi-for-PM, it’ll be Shiv Sena: Gujaratis

ujaratis here, as in most other places in the city, will opt for the Shiv Sena solely because it’s BJP’s poll partner in the city. “Driven by the single-most popular agenda – Modi-for-PM – the Gujaratis in South Central Mumbai may well vote for Shiv Sena candidate Rahul Shewale”, feels Anju Doshi. The Gujaratis are hugely a trader class community and would anyway vote for the BJP. In the absence of BJP and with relations with the Shiv Anju Doshi Sena on the mend, the members of the community are set to support the Shiv Sena. The constituency may well witness an upset for the sitting MP Eknath Gaikwad who may just not be third time lucky.

Mahavir Jain

he Jains have historically been BJP supporters. This time around, with the Modi wave engulfing all of India, the Jains should vote for their partner in the city, Shiv Sena”, says Mahavir Jain. “Besides, South Central Mumbai is the Shiv Sena’s home ground and having them in power makes Jains feel a lot safer too”, adds Jain. Other political parties are not in touch with grass-root issues that plague locals here. The Shiv Sena is perceived as being closely in touch with reality lending it a distinct edge over others, where the Jains are concerned.

C

Only MNS does all the work here: North Indians

ontrary to sentiments of their South Mumbai counterparts, the South Central North Indian electorate is MNS enthusiast. On fears of violence as envisaged by most North Indian residents, the community stands divided in South Central Mumbai. “Yahan pe jo bhi MANSE kar raha hai, barobar hai”, says UPite Rajrani Nirmal. “Bahar se aaye Bihariyon ko maarke bhaga rahe hain… achcha hai”, she adds. “Aur toh aur, Bihar mein unki sarkar kuch nahin karti toh ismein Maharashtra ka kya dosh”, maintains Rajrani. The North Indian electorate itself is divided Rajrani Nirmal on the basis of state. The UPite has distanced himself from the Bihari who he considers “an outsider,” and a “bojh on Mumbai’s resources,” much on the lines of the MNS theology.

T

For Modi, it will be Sena: Sikhs

he Sikhs have all been won over by Narendra Modi, it’s widely felt. And, as a rule, Sardars usually vote for a BJP candidate in their zone. “With Narendra Modi being projected as the party’s PM candidate and one who has Sanjeet Lohiya assured employment for the youth and other protrade perks for the business class, the Sikhs will mostly opt for BJP, and their poll partner, the Shiv Sena here”, says Sanjeet Lohiya. South Central Mumbai harbours a sizeable population of Sikhs who are predominantly a business community and will opt for the Shiv Sena – particularly considering that it’s an extension of their support for Modi.

“A

Modi effect here too: Marwaris

Minal Parmar

lot of us Marwaris want to see Narendra Modi as India’s Prime Minister”, says Minal Parmar. “And, what better way to do that than vote for their poll partner here in the city - the Shiv Sena”, she says. While, under regular circumstances, the Shiv Sena candidate wouldn’t be a preferred candidate where the Marwaris are concerned, in the present situation where the BJP hasn’t fielded a single candidate in Mumbai owing to its poll arrangement with the Shiv Sena, things are different. “Also, despite differences in the past, the Shiv Sena has cozied up to the Gujarati-Marwari combine, over the last few years. Probably, the party has seen the strength of the community and has managed to earn a sizeable amount of trust within sections”, says trader Vimal Jain.

COULD GO TO…

MUMBAI SOUTH-CENTRAL CONSTITUENCY

T

Congress for secularism and progress: Christians

he Christians have traditionally been Congress supporters and despite the overwhelming Modi-for-PM agenda, there’s poor little to sway the Christian voter from his age-old preference. “The Congress candidate in this area responds better to Christian grievances than candidates from any other party”, offers Moses Fernandes. The Christians feel that the Congress which is supported by a huge electorate that include slum dwellers and backward classes from areas like Dharavi, Antop Hill, Anushakti Nagar, Sion and Chembur will come to power once again. “There is no choice other than the Congress. The AAP is blindly supporting regularisation of all slums. That will fetch votes but surely create a huge mess in the city”, feels Agnelo Fernandes.

Moses Fernandes

T

Unsure if a change will work: Muslims

he Congress is perceived as a “known enemy” among Muslims here in South Central and any attempt to bring about a change in leadership elicits conflicting reactions. The older generation of Muslims is very wary of a change and may continue with their allegiance with sitting Congress MP Eknath Gaikwad. However, the Aam Aadmi Party’s most recent pledge to regularise all slums is proposition tempting enough for slum-dwellers to shift loyalties. And, that may affect Congress prospects. The delay of the Dharavi redevelopment has made a lot of voters suspicious of the government’s intentions and that may work against the sitting MP. The younger voter, like Wasim Khan, feels, “Everyone here, particularly the youth, is tired of giving Wasim Khan Congress a change again and again”. Seeing that there’s little progress at the grassroot level, a lot of younger Muslims are keen on a change. And, they may opt for Shiv Sena as the candidate particularly seems progressive and has some very interesting plans for South Central Mumbai”, says Wasim who will be casting his vote for the very first time.

The Mumbai South-Central constituency is a rapidly transforming old city and harbours a mix of the middle class Maharashtrian, Punjabis, Gujaratis, Christians and Muslims. Sitting MP Eknath Gaikwad’s win the last time around and the Shiv Sena’s loss owing primarily to the emergence of MNS has been the highlight here. It’ll be Gaikwad’s past performance versus the Modi-for-PM agenda here, reports Gajanan Khergamker

“T

Sena, because it’s keen on redevelopment: Buddhists

his zone needs to develop drastically. And, nobody except for Rahul Shewale – the Shiv Sena candidate has been expressing any real desire to look into this”, says Buddhist Sahil Gamre. Anyway, Buddhists are known to be a strong vote-bank for the Shiv Sena and these elections, things will be mostly the same. “I personally feel that Shiv Sena knows the issues of the locals and the MP should be a Shiv Sena candidate”, feels Shewale. With a lot of scope for Sahil Gamre redevelopment, any candidate talking on the issue is a huge hit with an electorate keen on redevelopment. They see it as potential for growth – both on the area front as well as on a personal note.

T

Youth keen on change

he youth of South Central Mumbai, much like the youth everywhere else, are keen on a change. “We’ve had enough of the Congress and its empty talk”, feels Siddharth Anarse. “It’s time we had a change and that could be from any political party. Today, Modi sounds like the best bet available. Progress is all he talks about”, adds friend Krish Jain. For Mihir Kelkar, Rahul Koyande and Sripad Pawaskar too, “a government that works for the youth is what is needed. Development and progress are the keywords here and not just empty talk.” “We need a leader who does not just make assurances to migrant slum-dwellers and assure them of housing but instead tackles the problem of migration and ensures that there is overall progress”, says Chaitanya Teppala.

To maintain secular fibre, it’ll be Congress: Andhraites

T

he Andhra Pradesh voter is mostly educated and opts for a secular candidate. “Congress is the only party which does not have a community-based agenda”, feels Andhraite Vasu Dosa. The Shiv Sena and MNS have a distinct proMaharashtrian agenda while the BJP comes Vasu Dusa across as a staunch Hindutva party. That leaves the Andhra voter with just Congress in the constituency. “It’ll most probably be a repeat of the sitting Congress MP Eknath Gaikwad this time around”, feels Dosa. After all, Gaikwad had an impressive 98 per cent attendance in Parliament and had asked around 1,000 questions too. That apart, he has been consistently taking up issues related to Mumbai's railways and cluster redevelopment and has used up his annual Rs.4 crore MP fund. “I feel the Telugu votes will go to Congress only”, says Dosa. gajanan@draftcraft.in

It is not that the likes of abu asim azmi have lowered the standards of the political debate, MNS chief Raj Thackeray too had called upon farmers to kill those who were forcing them to commit suicides. While the MNS chief has got a rap on the knuckles from the ECI, it remains to be seen whether the poll body takes strict action against azmi. The latest to jump the bandwagon is Nitesh Rane who has in his April 11 tweet gone to the extent of asking “all potential rapists to contact Samajwadi Party female members and family members as it is ok to rape them!

he fracas between NCP workers and Industries Minister Narayan Rane has worsened. This has led to NCP chief Sharad Pawar to crack the whip yesterday by dislodging Sindhudurg district unit president Bala Bhise for defying the party diktat by refusing to campaign for Congress candidate Nilesh Rane from the SindhudurgRatnagiri constituency. The NCP also issued a notice to its MLA Deepak Kesarkar who refused to campaign for Rane, preferring to resign from his post instead. Pawar announced his decision to replace Bhise with Victor Danteus at a rally held in Sawantwadi, Sindhudurg, in support of Nilesh Rane, sitting MP and son of Narayan Rane. “If anybody thinks the organisation revolves around him then he is wrong. Sharad Pawar have to work for it. The perception that whole organisation will revolve around one person will not work in the NCP,” asserted Pawar. He also assured the gathering that action would be taken against his party MLA Kesarkar who had defied party orders to campaign for Nilesh. Interestingly, no party worker from NCP attended the rally. Pawar and nephew

Ajit had tried to broker a truce but faced an embarrassment when the Sawantwadi legislator along with the local party cadres refused to campaign for Nilesh. Nilesh is pitted against Shiv Sena's Vinayak Raut and the contest has become interesting as some of the NCP workers have distanced themselves from the campaign.

SIMHASAN Prashant Hamine | ADC nals. Already in the first phase of polling on April 10, voters in a tiny village of Morgan in Buldhana Lok Sabha constituency used the None Of The Above (NOTA) option to register their protest against lack of roads and power. The Mathadi workers (Head Loaders) agitated over the no progress of the government in solving their housing problem too have decided to press for NOTA. If that is not enough, the hith-

erto docile Brahmin community too has urged the faithful to use NOTA in protest of the

established political parties not fielding candidates from the community.

05 ADC has been consistently highlighting the issue of widespread discrepancies in the electoral rolls over the past one year. The BJP-Shiv Sena seem to have woken up at the eleventh hour now. The BJP argues that a lakh of voters whose names have already been registered in Sangli Lok Sabha constituency are also registered as voters in Pune Lok Sabha constituency. Sena candidate Anandrao Adsul who is contesting from Amravati (SC) constituency argued that names of 45,000 voters were missing. In Yavatmal too voters found it difficult to trace their names in the voters list. Tragically the reality is that most of us wake up on poll eve to find out our names in the voters list which are periodically updated. Unfortunately many treat poll days as holidays and then curse the political establishment for the next five years for its failure to address our problems.

leuths of the Thane (rural) police on Saturday arrested a 32-yearold married man and his accomplice for trying to disfigure the face of a 22-yearold college girl by throwing acid on her in the Shanti Nagar area of Mira Road. The girl had been pressurizing the man to divorce his wife and marry her. According to the police, the accused, identified as Akshay Shah (32), is a resident of Malad and works in the diamond industry. Al-

36-year-old woman from Shivaji Nagar, Govandi is running from pillar to post to get her cheater husband arrested for stealing and domestic abuse. His family members also face similar charges. Yet, despite court orders, Shivaji Nagar police have not arrested any of the accused, laments the victim. Ironically, the accused had also been charged for raping the victim in 2012. Eventually out on bail, the accused man convinced her to marry him, to avoid conviction. On April 3, 2012, the victim had lodged a rape and theft complaint against accused Salim Abdul Zabbar Adhoni (39) an auto driver and Shivaji Nagar resident. Shivaji Nagar police had arrested Salim for raping the victim and stealing her gold ornaments then. However, after receiving bail, he convinced her to marry him. Once married, Salim started abusing her. In another case of blatant irony, Salim got his wife arrested under section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the IPC in the year 2013. Eventually she was out on bail but continued to be harassed by Salim and his family members. When the police failed to take action, the victim approached the Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Kurla. The court in its order on January 1, ordered Shivaji Nagar police to register an FIR against Adhoni and five of his family members. Finally, as per the court order, Shivaji Nagar police registered a FIR against Adhoni and Nabira (Salim’s first wife), Mumtaz (mother), Javed (brother), Shaban (brother) and Shahnaz (sister), under sections 498(A), 406, 380, 420, 323 and 34 of the IPC. “Despite the court order the police have not arrested them yet,” complains the victim. week after the Mumbai High Court denied realty firm Princeton Universal LLP access to the rented residence of yesteryear actress Sadhana in Santacruz, asking them to seek her written permission, the firm has now decided to approach the court with an appeal against the order of access into the garden adjoining her house. Sadhana has been living in the 3,000 sq.ft. groundfloor flat of a three-storey building Sangeeta, which earlier belonged to famous Bollywood playback singer Asha Bhosle for over 50 years. In 2012, the singer sold it to Kakad Realty, a subsidiary of the Princeton Universal LLP. Princeton then filed a suit in the Mumbai High Court in February last year, and an application in March, seeking directions against Sadhana. The firm said she should not obstruct their representatives from accessing her side of the property. It also sought that Sadhana not be “allowed to deface the realty firm's name board, trespass on the remaining open space inside the compound, interfere with the right of the security guards and interfere with the firm's development of the property.” However, the court while turning down the request of

The three-storey structure Sangeeta, in Santacruz the firm, had accepted the separate water bills produced by Sadhana for her flat as well as for the garden. The last bill produced was of June 1983, carrying the owner's name as well as Sadhana's father's name as 'care of'. While delivering the order, Justice Roshan Dalvi allowed the firm to do the repair and maintenance work of the building and said that the firm would have access from both the gates to the disputed property. “That access would be to the entire property aside from the flat and the garden. The firm would have right of access around the suit property from one gate to the other within the compound wall. The realty firm would be entitled to the

right of access to the first and second floor and also terrace of the suit property,” the order stated, while denying access to the garden and actress' flat. Kunal Kakkad of Princeton Universal LLP said, “We have no objections with the High Court order in this suit. Because of this order, our work on the renovation will now start soon. However, we are filing another appeal in this case as we have papers to prove that the garden area was actually a driveway into the building which was later converted into a garden. We found out about it from the BMC office only after this court order. So we are now going to appeal that this garden be included as part of the High Court order.” philip.varghese@afternoondc

The approval certificate from the committee is still awaited though. It was completed in the 1870s and was recently renovated to its original glory after decades of neglect. This hall can accommodate 500 persons, while 100 can be accommodated on its balcony. the varsity had proposed the need for ACs. The hall has been host to various international conferences, seminars and visits by the prime ministers and presidents of various countries. In the Board of College and University Development (BCUD) meeting on June 10 last year, the members of the committee had proposed a plan for making the convocation hall air-conditioned. The MU had prepared a sketch

and design for the installation of the AC and it was forwarded to the heritage committee. The heritage committee had asked the varsity for various modifications and the MU has now been able to bring in the needed modifications in the plans as per the directions of the heritage committee. In September 2013, the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee, BMC had said that the varsity's proposal stated that the balcony inside the convocation hall will be permanently blocked. The airconditioning could also cause damage to the structure with its sudden cooling. The committee had thus rejected the proposal. The ADC had carried a story regarding this on September 25, 2013. Dr. Naresh Chandra, Pro Vice Chancellor, MU said, “Once the approval certificate is obtained, the installation process will begin. The work will mostly be completed in six months”.

BMC to trim 349 trees will be trimmed for redevelopment purposes belonging to the MIG group at Gandhi Nagar, Bandra, and 47 would be cut for the proposed construction of Indian Packaging Industry in Marol industrial area, Andheri. The remaining trees will be chopped for two proposed SRA projects in Andheri (E) soon. A civic official said, “These projects require the cutting of trees. It cannot be avoided

but we will make sure that we will cut off as less trees as possible”. Feedback and opinions have been invited by the administration within seven days. The proposal is likely to be tabled at the civic tree authority meeting. The rule states that at least two trees should be planted in lieu of every tree that is trimmed for the developmental purpose. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

Amitabh to be BMC's Brand Ambassador for TB Bollywood icon’s involvement in this noble cause will be a big boost for the doctors and nurses, and the thousands of unfortunate patients afflicted by the dreaded disease By Vishnudas Sheshrao

B

ollywood star Amitabh Bachchan has 'humbly' agreed to Mayor Sunil Prabhu's request to be the Brand Ambassador for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) 'Mumbai Mission for TB' (tuberculosis). Senior civic officials said, besides thousands of TB patients, it will also boost the morale of civic medical staff including doctors and nurses who are reluctant to serve in TB hospitals due to high risk of infection. Bachchan whose film career is spanning over four decades, has ar-

Sunil Prabhu guably a big influence on three generations and across the country. His voice and face will be more than effective to curb the misconception about TB which is otherwise considered as a dreadful disease and its patients are considered as 'untouchable'. Doctors who had worked in Sewree TB hospital said, “It is observed that family members come to admit a TB patient here. How-

ever, after medical treatment is over, they are reluctant to take the patient back home.” He added, “Sometimes, male patients whose parents are reluctant to take them back find their own way out. However, it is very difficult for young women. If their family does not take them back, they have nowhere to go.” Hospital reports say, “If a patient dies, family members don't come and claim the body. Unclaimed bodies remain in the mortuary. After lot of paper work, these bodies are sent for cremation.

Grim scenario Figures of Multi Drug Resistant TB (MDR TB) cases are alarming. According to official data, in 2010, total 53 cases of MDR TB were diagnosed. In 2012, the number of MDR TB diagnosed patients reached 2,429 and in 2013 its is 3,100. Civic officials said, “Since January 2014, estimated 550 patients of MDR TB have been diagnosed. Underlining the importance of public awareness about TB, Bachchan wrote to Mayor Prabhu, “There are, I believe, a lot of misconceptions about the disease and many think of TB as being a dreaded disease. Sadly, this not the case.” He further writes, “I accept your offer and would appreciate receiving further guidance as to how I can perform the duties of a brand ambassador for 'TB Control' effectively.” posting' and some of them are ready to even resign in case of transfer to Sewree TB hospital. Few doctors and nurses are dedicated and selflessly working in this hospital. Since last year, the civic body also made special provisions for doctors working in this hospital. petty quarrel between two groups of young men snow-balled into a violent group clash ending in the brutal murder of one person in Bhayandar (East) late on Saturday night. According to the police, the incident has been reported from the Indira Nagar area in Navghar village. The deceased, identified as Gururaj Maruti Rajkure (27), and his friend Pradeep Ramchandra Shinde (25) were returning home after attending an engagement ceremony in the area, when members of a rival group instigated an argument with them over something trivial. The heated exchange of words took a violent turn when the accused mounted a violent assault on the duo with iron rods and other sharp weapons before fleeing the spot. Rajkure and Shinde were rushed to a nearby hospital, where Rajkure succumbed to his injuries. Shinde is in a deep coma after suffering serious head injuries. Following the incident, hundreds of local people thronged the Navghar police station demanding immediate arrest of the assailants who, according to

Angry locals outside the Navghar police station them, had pre-planned the murder. A police team immediately swung into action and arrested five men including Babu Shravan Khare, Vikram Ghadge alias Vicky, Akbar Abdul alias Aban, Arjun Chauhan and Vijay Singh alias Gabbar for their involvement in the murder. Even as the police claimed that the murder was nor premeditated and was the case of a petty quarrel turning ugly, residents of the area have alleged that the groups were at loggerheads for quite some time and this bloodbath was bound to happen.“We have arrested five people and booked them for murder. They will be produced before the court on Monday,” confirmed Senior Police Inspector Khanderao Khaire.

Ponder awhile... “Heroism on command, senseless violence, and all the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism – how passionately I hate them!” — Albert Einstein

Utilise small police force better M

UMBAI with a population of 15 million should have had a larger police force. With the fast changing crime situation, it becomes clear that the small force which we have finds it difficult to deliver. Increasing unemployment, growing tensions in slums, desperate bid for survival are some of the causes which make people take to crime. Instead of concentrating on crime, the police are made to do all sorts of work: A larger number of police is wasted on VIP duty, on ensuring high moral standards of security. The police should not have anything to do with the maintenance of morals. So long as a citizen does not hurt others, he should have the right to do whatever he wants. It is absurd that the police should have anything to do with such a man’s life. But somehow, the Mumbai police think that maintenance of people’s morals is part of their duty. Some young folks – boys and girls – organise a party in a holiday resort. It is a totally private celebration. The police raid the party and declare the merrymakers are ‘indecently’ dressed and they are consuming liquor without permit. What does it matter if at a private party, people dress as they like? What according to the police is indecent? The police intervention would have been all right if the party was open to public. Must the police have the right to impose their views with regard to how the merrymakers should dress in a completely private party? Evidently the court also is against the behaviour of the police. In one verdict, it said that girls should be free to dance in bars. Another court verdict is also against the police: It has asked why two cops are posted at every bar in the city: what are they doing there? It is a sheer waste of the force. For some weird reason, the government refuses to do away with the permit system which enables a person to drink. Prohibition is out and why keep the rule with regard to drinking only with a permit? Lakhs of people in the city drink without a permit. The ‘duty’ the police do with regard to booking those who drink without permit should be scrapped but this will not happen so long as we have moral custodians around.

O a growing number of Congress netas are now desperate for Priyanka Bitiya to rescue them from irrelevance. The likes of Janardhan Dwidey and Makhan Lal Fotedar and the rest whose only claim to fame is that they are front-row courtiers at 10 Janpath want Priyanka Gandhi to play a more active role in politics. Robert Vadra’s wife is already at brother Rahul Gandhi’s side, helping him devise the election strategy. She is reported to have personally picked the Congress candidate to take on Modi in Varanasi, assuring him all financial help. But apparently this is not enough for the khadi-clad parasites who have made a career for themselves as yes men par excellence. In the multilayered hierarchy of courtiers that is the Congress Party they command extra weightage for being members of the apex court in Delhi. Others not fortunate enough to get access to the Dilli Durbar, therefore, must necessarily play second fiddle. Dwidey was first off the blocks, suggesting an active role for Priyanka. He claimed the late Rajiv Gandhi had confided in him that his daughter possessed a great political talent. It was not possible to test the veracity of that claim. In any case, it was irrelevant whether a doting father credited Priyanka with political aptitude which many would say he himself had lacked thoroughly. Besides, why rake up that alleged private conversation at this point of time? We shall return to that presently. Let us now turn to the averments of yet another Congressman. M.L. Fotedar, an important cog in the Indira Gandhi durbar, too has plugged for Priyanka as a politician. He says that Indira Gandhi saw in her granddaughter a future Indira Gandhi. Both Dwidey and Fotedar are taking no chances of contradiction. Nobody comes back from the dead to tell the truth. But the timing of their public lobbying for Priyanka is significant. It confirms that the Congress fears a pasting of its life in the on-going poll. A corollary of that is that that the two Congress worthies along with a large number of party members are frustrated with the leadership of Rahul Gandhi. They reckon that Priyanka might rescue them from being made fully redundant.

only chartable thing to assume is that Dwidey and Fotedar are testing the political waters before she takes a call on her daughter’s political career. However, should that decision cause Priyanka to formally take charge of the party, whether or not it results in reviving its fortunes can be left to the people but it would be clear that the family has lost faith in the leadership of the son. Without second-guessing the eventual decision of the Family, we believe that even Priyanka would fail to revive the increasingly moribund organization. It is futile to visualize the return of a second Indira Gandhi. Politics and the people have changed so very thoroughly from the times when a Dev Kant Barooah would disgrace himself by chanting Indira is India and India is Indira. No.

days as Punjab Chief Minister when he was virtually an ‘outsider’ to his own cabinet colleagues and a vast majority of the party legislators. Given that Jaitley is a self-made man, having achieved unprecedented success as the country’s top-most lawyer, the Congress candidate ought to have done his homework before flinging irrelevant charges against him. Most ridiculously Singh had the temerity to call Jaitley a ‘minor lawyer.’ Jaitely pointed out how his own grandmother and wife’s mother and aunts hailed form Amritsar. And now he now owns a house in the upmarket Civil Lines area in the city. In fact, local BJP leaders questioned whether the Captain had any right to call any place in Punjab as his home, considering that he was most of the time holed up either in the luxury farm house of the late liquor contractor Ponty Chaddha in South Delhi or his own plush property outside Shimla with his friend(s) from Pakistan.

Congress’ crocodile tears

T INSIDE STORY Virendra Kapoor

Priyanka cannot change the DNA of the Congress. She might be photogenic, might have an easy smile, and might also have a little sense not to make a fool of herself whenever she speaks without the aid of a prepared script. But a badly fragmented polity with fiercely competing regional outfits replacing the Congress in several States as key players would require far more than a pretty face to revive the sinking Congress ship. Priyanka Vadra, the wife of the get-rich-quick Robert Vadra, does not have it in her to lead the Congress any more than his brother had to stop its decline and fall. Period. Since Robert Vadra has acquired the NRI status for the tax purposes — after all, all those millions earned overnight from the fishy land deals have to be accounted for in the books, it is time he and his family lived in clover in some sunny island abroad. Politics as a profession has become so demanding of late that even a legendary RANTED that desperate situations call for surname no longer guarantees success. And desperate measures. HE vicious attack on Narendra Modi by the Congress Party for the latter acknowledging in his nomination papers he filed for the Vadodara Lok Sabha constituency that his marital status was ‘married’ is again a case of the pot calling the kettle black. The party whose own spokesman was caught on camera in an adulterous relationship has risen in defence of Modi’s wife, even though the latter has had no complaints whatsoever. In fact, Modi’s wife, Jashodaben, has always maintained in press interviews that she is extremely happy that her husband, with whom she has had little contact since he became an active RSS member more than forty years ago, would now rise further in his political career. But the Congress’s crocodile tears for Modi’s wife do not impress anyone particularly when it did not say a word edgeways for the wife of its leader caught on camera in an adulterous act and whose services it still continues to use despite his being a self-confessed tax dodger to boot.

Anger and Mindfulness O

UR anger is a part of us. We should not pretend that we are not angry when in fact we are angry. A good way to take care of our anger is to stop and return to our breathing. Think of your anger as your little baby brother or sister, or your child. No mat-

MATTER & SPIRIT ter how they act you have to treat him or her with tenderness and love. In the same way, you need to treat your anger with tenderness and love. When you are angry say: ‘Breathing in, I know I am angry. Breathing out, I am taking good care of my anger.’ While you are breathing and saying this, you may still be angry. But you are safe, because you are embracing your anger the way a mother embraces her crying baby. After doing this for a while, your temper will begin to calm down and you will be able to smile at your anger:‘Breathing in, I see anger in me. Breathing out, I smile at my anger.’ When we take care of our anger like this, we are being Mindful. Mindfulness acts just like the rays of the sun. Without any effort, the sun shines on everything and everything changes because of it. When we expose our anger to the light of Mindfulness, it will change too, like a flower opening to the sun. — Thich Nhat Hanh

Sick mentality MULAYAM Singh says boys are boys and make mistakes. It doesn’t mean we hang them. If we (SP) are voted to power we shall revise the law. He is shamelessly encouraging potential rapists. And Abu Azmi goes a step further and says that even the girls involved should be hanged. According to him, if any woman, whether married or unmarried, goes along with a man (apart from her husband of course) with or without her parents' consent should be hanged. If Azmi is so miffed about the law in India which doesn’t hang women, I would suggest he migrate to a country lock stock and barrel where this law is followed. May be these politicians need serious counselling on sexism and respect to women. It reeks of sheer jealously as women today are in all fields and that too in the top brackets. The main reason could be that these people have only seen women make rotis with men in their houses not allowing women to have a life of their own. Their mindset is majorly skewed due to their upbringing where these type of so-called values are inculcated so deeply.

ments from his father. TV panel discussions on such a shocking comment with spokespersons appeared ridiculous. Abu Azmi shook the country by saying that the women having sex before marriage should be hanged. Azam Khan shook the nation by giving credit for the Kargil victory exclusively to soldiers of his own religion. It is now clear that Samajwadi Party is bent upon for a political suicide and the party may vanish from the political scene of this great nation forever, along with some other such parties which can go down to any extent for vote-politics. In case this party fails to get people's support in the Lok Sabha elections, the UP government should be sacked with stringent actions against its leaders. It is indeed a pathetic position. — Anandambal Subbu, Khargar

THIS refers to 'Mulayam under fire for rape remarks' (ADC, Apr. 11). People who have been hearing the rantings of Mulayam Singh Yadav, over the years, will never be surprised about his recent utterance, on the rapists and anti-rape — Chandrakant Kotian, Vikhroli laws. What he has expressed is the medieval mindset of a male dom inated society. It is the very same POLITICIANS in this country have primitive mental attitude that has pledged to issue one shocking made the Yadav duo (Mulayam statement on a daily basis during and Laloo) oppose the 'Women's the on-going elections. I strongly feel that Mulayam has become pro-rapists and has lost his balance of mind. He needs urgent psychiatrist treatment and has no right to defend the rapists who have committed heinous crimes. Since the statements of Mulayam Singh Yadav and Azam Khan have reached such a low level of campaigning for vote bank politics, the Election Commission which has become gutless and a mute spectator, must take very strong action and ban the Samajwadi Party for dividing the country for their selfish personal and political gains. It is high time that the people of India must take note of this and reject them totally in the Lok Sabha elections as they have no right to contest the elections by making a mockery of the democratic system. — Bhagwan Thadani, Pune

Two contests IT is amusing to note that quite a few senior politicians are being fielded from two constituencies and the most glaring among them is none other than the Gujarat chief minister himself who has been riding high all these months as the Lotus party's prime ministerial candidate. He is touted as the super political-administrator who is capable of changing the fortunes of the country and so it does not stand to any reason that he will be contesting from two constituencies. The same holds good for the other two also – L.K. Advani and Mulayam Singh Yadav. At their level of experience, they need to be sure of themselves. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane

Dhoni's record worrying IT is a matter of great concern that the track record of Mahendra Singh Dhoni in matches played overseas is going from bad to worse although

initially he was winning under subcontinental conditions. We know the that players are good for IPL and nothing else now. The going has not been good for over 1000 days and there has been no change in captaincy or the composition of the players. However, we blame the coach at times to find an escape route. It is indeed a mad mad world of cricket. Captains like Cook and Smith announced their retirement once the team play bad cricket overseas, whereas Indian Team captain is a permanent entity despite repeated defeats. — Ramanathan, Bhandup

Mosquito menace DESPITE investing huge amounts of money in the Terminal T2 at the international airport, it is facing typical problems and one of the serious one is the mosquito menace. Having faced such a situation at our homes we are ready for the mosquito bite. The recent inclusion to the infrastructure of T2 terminal is the hi-fi NASA bug killer to fight mosquitoes. The service providers appointed by the Mumbai International Airport Limited seem to have found a way to tackle mosquito menace in a most sophisticated way. Rs.7 lakh have been spent on the initiative which may be the safest way of getting rid of the perennial problem in one stroke. The swankiest airport in our country may provide an eye opener for other airports in our country to go for such a measure and provide passengers safety from ills of mosquito bite to avoid diseases like malaria, dengue etc. The move started from Mumbai and continues to abate mosquitoes in the most meticulous way. — Jayanthy S. S I walk up the creaky wooden stairs of Congress House situated off Lamington Road, I see children and cats running around in equal measure. Soon I reach the staircase for the fourth floor and I’m greeted by a big white door. This is where Manikchand B. Vora, lives. At 98, he is the oldest voter in the city. This man, who now lives with his daughter Swapna, is still very independent. Dressed in a white kurta-pajama, you see him slowly shuffling from the bedroom on the far side of the old house towards the living room, asking his daughter on the way if I was the interviewer. After living through a century that has seen some of the greatest changes in the country, Vora really has done it all. Where do you start with a man who was studying Law in London when the Second World War broke out, has travelled Europe, fought in the freedom struggle, gone to jail and prosecuted the most horrific serial killer Mumbai has ever seen? “Well I was born in Akluj”, Vora begins, “It is a small town in Solapur district in Maharashtra.” After finishing his schooling from Sangli, Vora studied at Ferguson College, Pune, and Wilson College, Mumbai, before going to Willingdon College in Sangli for Senior B.A. “Because the idea was that you must go to Bombay if you want to learn English. I went to Sangli because of Professor D.E. Karve; he was transferred there. I had to go to London later on for the bar, so we had to be trained under a good professor.” Vora was going to London in September 1937 to The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple. For that he applied to the District Magistrate. “The collectors were happy to send us for education. ‘Boys from our district are going to study,’ they would say. Our registration was done in 15 days”. Vora

also got a book of etiquette from Thomas Cook, the travel company. “A three piece suit was needed for dinner, a two piece suit won’t do. Simple things like sneezing – we think it is okay but the boy coming to serve dinner would say ‘You should have asked me to wait out or not sneezed when I was putting the food plate in front of you.’ Now these were not small things there, they were big things. But they weren’t too strict. They realised we were students and were learning their etiquette,” he says with emphasis. Vora lived in Hampstead. He travelled to Middle Temple every morning where he studied Roman law. Vora denies being racially discriminated against. “See that time was past. Gandhi had started his Satyagraha, the English were visiting India. So there was a lot that was happening.” By the time he finished two terms, “war had broken out in London” in 1939. Vora, his landlady and two friends left for Claxton where the landlady owned a small hut. “We left not because of fear but because of shame. When war has broken out and people are to be fed, every grain that you eat is like poison to you, it could be given to someone else.” Vora saw everyone being called for enrollment. “Children were being moved to safer places outside of London and there were only women everywhere running hospitals, etc.,” he says. He did not know how to help the people, but he and his friends would fill sacs with sand and keep them near glass windows for protection. Soon he

Florence. “In Italy, they suspected us (laughs). We were educated persons who were in Italy to get intelligence for England, they thought. But I told them I've passed my examination and I'm going to India.” Vora finally got an India bound ship from Venice. Vora reached India on the December 31, 1939 and started going to courts in Mumbai to observe the pro-

ceedings. He was still to get a Sanad and decided to travel in India for a while. “I didn’t know my own country, so I left for a Congress session in Ramgarh near Patna,” he says. There he met Feroze Gandhi. “He asked me to stay and volunteer but I told him I would go back.” After making stops at Shikharji, the famous Jain temple town, Shanti Niketan and Kolkata, Vora returned to Mumbai. Vora became a volunteer in one of the young groups of Congress “and Purushottamdas ‘PT’ Trikamdas was our leader. Now after Gandhi passed the Quit India resolution we all wrote letters to the Commissioner of Police in 1942 declaring our rights over our property as this was a free land. It really was to me,” Vora narrates. “There were three of us - Desai, a school principal, Sharma, a Congress leader, and I. We were arrested and taken in a taxi to the police station,” Vora explains that they were given “first-class treatment because we were educated people. They had to treat us well.” Vora was detained for three weeks in Arthur Road Jail and then moved to Nashik Central Jail where he served 11 months. After independence he became a public prosecutor and prosecuted the famous serial killer, Raman Raghav. “They said he is mad. Our point was that he may not be brilliant but he is quite conscious of the fact that he is committing a crime. He hit a lady who was sleeping on the road, took six aanaas from her and said ‘why are you sleeping here?’ Now they said who would kill for six aanaas? But he did. He even had a trishul with him. He kept say-

ing ‚ ‘Akbar hoga Akbar hoga‘, but we never understood what he was saying.” Vora who handled about 3,500 cases in court before retiring in 1987 has voted in every single election since Independence and plans on voting this time too. “Voting is very important, it gives you mental satisfaction. If I know a certain party may not win elections this year, that does not mean I won’t vote for their candidates. For a land like India with different people, I think the two party system with a third liberal party works very well”, he says. Vora calls elected politicians “Sudharaks”. “It will take five years to see if these Sudharaks will really work. All this ‘I belong to Maharashtra, I belong to Gujarat’, should go. Similarly, you follow your religion, but religion is not to be counted in certain services.” Vora believes there should be external expert advisors from think tanks who advise the Prime Minister, Home and Finance Ministers. “That way we are ensured that wrong people don’t get in and wrong decisions aren’t made.” After retirement he taught English to children from backward classes. He believes that the state needs to give a higher budget for education instead of the everincreasing expenditure on our armed forces, “it is important too, but there’s a lot of corruption and the money isn’t being utilised for the right purposes. There was a fighting spirit in us during independence, now we have become loyalists to one ideology.” We are almost done with the interview and as I’m getting up, Vora says, with a twinkle in his eye, “I’ll turn 99 on 1st August this year, but I told someone I was a hundred years old. I was joking of course!” The fascinating man with almost a century of experience assures me as I take leave, “I’m here if you want to know more about those days!” Sushil Kadam | ADC

Trust the Americans to have the guts to look back into the past to ensure they do not commit the same errors again. Slavery was once a pre-occupation of this most advanced nation, much after they almost wiped out the native Indians and the American buffalo. The southern states of the USA ran their lives and their economy on the blood, sweat and tears of the African slaves they brought in by the millions. But there was a section of society that saw enslavement as an abomination, and stood up against it. They were reviled, attacked and humiliated, but they ultimately prevailed in abolishing this strange wretchedness of the white American. The book reviewed on this page is a classic account of the triumph of the human spirit.

he Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd is already a phenomenal bestseller, and got its strongest recommendation by Oprah’s Book Club. The citation was more than well-deserved for this extremely powerful book on slavery seen through the eyes, minds and hearts of Hetty (Handful), the daughter of a slave and Sarah Grimke, the daughter of one the most powerful men in Charleston, South Carolina. Fact meets fiction in this book – there was a real life Sarah Grimke in the 1800s, and she and her sister, Angelina (Nina), born into a landed slaveholding family, were, in fact, noted abolitionists who spoke out against slavery, and for women’s rights and empowerment. In 1839, Sarah co-authored an anti-slavery book, American Slavery As It Is: Testimony of a Thousand Witnesses, along with her sister, Angelina and her brother-in-law, Theodore Dwight Weld, which addressed the tragedies heaped upon the hapless slaves, and this is reportedly what drove Harriet Beecher Stowe to write Uncle Tom’s Cabin, which was published 13 years later, in 1852. These two books are considered to be instrumental in influencing a great section of American society against the concept of slavery. Sue Monk Kidd needs to be commended for her painstaking research, poring through many tomes, documents and records of the times, to bring out this seminal piece of work that is almost as powerful as the books referred to above. We have the story actually beginning with Hetty (Handful) being given as a maid-in-waiting to Sarah, just turned 11, as a birthday gift. Sarah is appalled and sets about trying to do her first noble act in this book by writing a letter of ‘manumission’ to free her slave. Of course, the page is torn to bits by her father, who is a notable Charleston judge. Her mother, Mary, too remonstrates with her. So we have little Handful sleeping on the floor outside Sarah’s door, close at hand to do her bidding and her bedding. There is a bonding as there can only be between two girls from varied circumstances – but there is more of compassion and heart from Sarah, than from Handful, who is constantly aware of her deprived station. Sarah, when she was just fouryears-old, has suffered the trauma of seeing a old slave woman being whipped senseless in her yard, her mother presiding over the savagery. ‘Her dress is cotton, a pale yellow colour.I stare transfixed as the back of it sprouts blood, blooms of red that open like petals.’ Sarah runs out of the house, blindly making for the wharves, across the gangplank of a sailing vessel, ‘stumbling over a turban of rope.’ When she is re-

trieved, ‘a muss of snot, tears, yard dirt, and harbour filth, she finds that she cannot speak. ‘I remained mute for a week. My words seemed sucked into the cleft between my collar bones. I rescued them by degrees, by praying, bullying and wooing. I came to speak again, but with an odd and mercurial form of stammer. I’d never been a fluid speaker, even my first spoken words had possessed a certain belligerent quality, but now there were ugly, halting gaps between my sentences, endless seconds when the words cowered against my lips and people averted their eyes.’ Hetty’s mother, Charlotte (mauma) is another strong and very rebellious character in this book: My mauma was shrewd. She didn’t get any reading and writing like me. Everything she knew came from living on the scarce side of mercy. “Where you think these shoulder blades of yours come from, girl? This all what left of your wings. They nothing but these flat bones now, but one day you gon get’ em back.” Charlotte is a seamstress for the

Grimke family and is into making the women’s dresses and also patchwork quilts for which, every now and then she manages to pilfer and filch some piece of cloth, or thread. She gets caught for stealing a very fine piece of green silk cloth and is punished with a leather strap being fastened to her leg which is folded up behind her and then wound around her neck. She is then made to stand and balance herself on one leg. It is an excruciating situation where she almost chokes to death. But it only serves to fuel her simmering hatred and her desire to free herself and her daughter, Handful. She intends to buy their own freedom after finding out how much each of them is worth. Tragic reflection of the times, as the author takes us into the library of the learned judge where a bound leather book contains the inventory of the family. And there, listed after water trough, the wheelbarrow, the claw hammer, and the bushel of flint corn, are the slaves. Handful reports to her mother who has been standing guard at the door, that

Charlotte, aged 36 is valued at $550 and Hetty, aged 16, at $500. She is proud to be the valued above all the other slaves, but does a rethink later on: Goods and chattel. The words from the leather book came into my head.We were like goldleaf mirror and the horse saddle. Not fullfledge people...All that pride about what we were worth left me then. For the first time, I felt the hurt and shame of just being who I was. After a while, I went down to the cellar. When mauma saw my raw eyes, she said, “Ain't nobody can write down in a book what you worth.” The mistress of the Grimke household, Mary, is descended from a family of Lords sent over from England to establish the city, and this is something she stresses every time she can in conversation. After her having meted out punishment to Charlotte, it is the turn of Handful to get a nasty lash across the back for learning the alphabet from Sarah. Handful, who has quickly learned how to read and write, messes things up by writing a sentence in the sand outside the house. Educating slaves is forbidden. Her father, while declaring that his library his henceforth off-limits to her, admonishes Sarah: You think there is no detriment in a slave learning to read? There are sad truths in our world, and one is that slaves who read are a threat. They would be abreast of news that would incite them in ways we could not control.Yes, it's unfair to deprive them, but there's a greater good here that must be protected. Charlotte has even managed to get a fake badge that entitles her to move about freely, does a lot of jobwork in order to raise and save money, gets involved with a free black, and even carries his child. She is also busy doing her story quilt, which tells the saga of their lives. But the story centres around the relationship between Sarah and Handful. There is no real bonding though Sarah increasingly tolerates Handful's indifferent attitude, and sometimes open resentment. When she is denied a pass to go to the market, she flares back when Sarah tells her she knows how that feels, saying, “So we just the same, me and you? That's why you the one to shit in the pot and I'm the one to empty it?” This does not deter Sarah from answering and following the dictates of her conscience, which militate against slavery, while maintaining her imposible friendship with Handful. With a great story and excellent language, this book is nothing short of a masterpiece. The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd Hachette India Rs.399

GULKI JOSHI’S THRILLING ACT IN

Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | MONDAY, APRIL 14, 2014

What is unusual about 'Nadaan Parinde'? It is a first of its kind drama thriller series, 'Nadaan Parinde' that will have viewers on the edge.

Please tell us something more about the serial? 'Naadan Parinde' explores the thrilling and captivating journey of an Indian family living at the border. The story brings alive the reality that nothing is what it seems at the border and for the people living there it is a life full of surprises and challenges. The show manages to capture the drama and the essence of the storyline effectively and extensively as the show is based out of a small village at the border near Punjab with real emotions and real locations. Describe your character in the show. I play Meher who is Sameer, the chief protagonist’s childhood friend, is progressive in thoughts and wants Sameer to make a name for himself. It is a well written character with wonderful shades.

Gulki Joshi is known largely for her lead role as Sugni on television serial 'Phir Subha Hogi' and a few impressive appearances in Crime Patrol (TV series) on Life OK. Now comes her most ambitious show 'Nadaan Parinde' on Life OK. The show will also open up a new slot at 6.30 pm for the channel, thereby extending Life OK’s prime time programming from 6.30 pm to 11 pm. Debina's dance stuns Sumit

Mayuri aka Debina Banerjee and Gomukh aka Sumit Arora play the part of a happy couple on the show entertaining the other family members with their playful antics and disputes. and you just have to work hard and you can achieve success," Aditya told PTI in an interview. The model-turned-actor rose to fame with his debut soap 'Na Aana Is Des Laado' in which his character Raghav became popular with audience. He has also played the lead in shows like 'Sawaare Sabke Sapne Preeto' and 'Junoon - Aisi Nafrat Toh Kaisa Ishq'. Aditya has starred in two films

'Zabardast' (Marathi) and 'Jalsa' (Telugu). When asked about his Bollywood aspirations, he said, "Absolutely, Bollywood is on my mind. I want to star in films. But it is a very tough field. It is difficult to crack into the films easily. But I am hopeful." The 30-year-old actor will be next seen playing the role of a police inspector in crime series 'Encounter' on Sony TV, which traces the lives of larger than life, fictional gangsters. "I am part of the first story. I play an inspector named Bhagat Dev. I am happy to be part of such a show, which is path breaking in a way. It is not just a crime show. It will deal with the back-stories of the main characters," he said. Aditya, who has primarily starred in daily soaps says the experience of working in this series was similar to doing a film. "It is similar to shooting a movie because you have a bound script, a character sketch." Acclaimed actor Manoj Bajpai is the host and will narrate each story from a neutral viewpoint. "I did not get an opportunity to shoot with him. But I would love to meet him. I am a huge admirer of his works and I consider him to be one of the best actors in Bollywood," Aditya said. The first episode of 'Encounter' aired on Friday. The series also features Marathi actor Rajesh Shringarpore, Mishal Raheja, Prashant Narayanan, Rohit Khuranna, Megha Gupta, Adaa Khan and Pramod Moutho among others.

Actually, it became known that in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, Banerjee’s party was about to field 50 Muslim candidates. There were many among them who had been Ministers, MPs, and many who had been one-two time MLAs. The strategy was that the party would give the maximum possible tickets to Muslims, and enter the electoral fray with a policy agenda for Muslims, Anna and his supporters would campaign in every constituency and expose Anna Hazare with Mamata Banerjee in happier times. the parties who lured the Muslims with a false picture. Anna, Dr. Sunilam played an active role in separating Anna from Mamata. He became so disturbed that he called Vinod Singh and said that this will turn out to be very wrong. In West Bengal all the Leftist parties will be wiped out and in the country there will be great damage to the Left. Now, only Dr. Sunilam can tell at whose behest he made that phone call and due to what reason he got the courage to try and lure the Convenor of the National Campaign Committee of the Trinamool Congress. It is only Dr. Sunilam who can tell whose agent he became and met Anna and whom he was deceiving. Dr. Sunilam was on the stage with Anna during that unfortunate press conference. Amongst those who led Anna there were also some ‘greats’ who leave behind many consummate Congressmen in performing devotional acts for Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh. Amongst these ‘greats’ is a person who describes the Congress 2009 victory as the grace of Ganga Maa (Goddess Ganga). He believes that the Congress Party did so much for the Ganga that Ganga Maa was pleased and gave the Congress seats that were largely along the banks of the Ganga. The BJP got dams built on the Ganga in Uttarakhand, therefore it could win not even a single seat in Uttarakhand. Those who analyse the country’s politics and elections should take coaching from such ‘greats’. In the name of the Ganga all the Congress did was to make this ‘great’ an office bearer in the Ganga Seva Abhiyan. Anna was on the verge of writing a new chapter on politics in the country, but he did an about turn and returned to his village, Ralegan Siddhi. But he left behind party workers who felt cheated, who cannot now understand what to do or where to go.

M.J. Akbar brings new hope for BJP and in the minds of several amongst us the question arose whether Akbar joined the BJP out of an attraction or temptation for the Rajya Sabha, whether he wants to become a Minister in the Modi government, whether these two desires remained dormant in his mind, out of which Rajiv Gandhi did not fulfill one desire, and after that those who replaced Santosh Bhartiya him — Narasimha Rao and Sonia Gandhi — completely sidelined a met Shri M. In 1977 the Jan Sangh became a part of the Janata Party and in 1978-79 when the Janata Party split, the Jan Sangh came forward in the form of the BJP and from then till now has been working in the form of the Bharatiya Janata Party. According to assumptions or what is clearly visible, neither does the BJP want to take the Muslims along with it and neither

do the Muslims want to go along with the BJP. Sikandar Bakht, Arif Beg and now Shahnawaz Hussain and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, these are the names currently known in the country as the Muslim faces of the BJP. It is for the first time that a person whose name is M.J. Akbar has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. Akbar has never been an admirer of the BJP. In his reports on the riots the truth has always been revealed that the hand of the RSS was behind the riots. After talking with Akbar I felt that his attitude has not changed at all and he is very clear on this and believes that with his coming the BJP will not get the votes of the Muslims. He also believes that Muslims will attack him, the way attacks are being made in the social media. There can also be public attacks on him, but Akbar is prepared for this. I felt during my talk with Akbar that he took the decision to join the BJP because he wants a dialogue to take place between the Muslims and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

DILLI KA BABU

R

Surprise Move

eserve Bank of India (RBI) Deputy Governor K.C. Chakrabarty surprised many when he resigned nearly three months before the end of his term. It set off round speculation that has not quite died down since he has not spoken about his unexpected decision. Did he fall out with RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan or was there some other reason, there are no dearth of hypotheses. Veteran observers have been quick to point out that Chakrabarty was known to speak his mind and was often at odds with Rajan’s predecessor D. Subbarao on several policy matters. In August 2010 he had been stripped of many of his key portfolios after his public comments on RBI’s monetary policy on tackling inflation. However some believe that Chakrabarty put in his papers to take up a prestigious foreign assignment. Whatever may be the reason for Chakrabarty to depart, he has put the Government in an awkward position, not the least being that he quit in the middle of a general election. The Government will have to find a replacement but that may happen only after the elections when a new Government is formed. With Chakrabarti’s exit, there are two vacancies for Deputy Governor in RBI. Anand Sinha had retired in January.

C

Seth’s Successor?

abinet Secretary Ajit Kumar Seth is set to retire in June by when a new Government will be firmly ensconced in Dilli. He had been given a one-year extension last year so that his tenure could last till the end of UPA-2. With Seth’s exit imminent, sources say that several eligible babus have already begun lobbying. Among the front-runners in race are Sutanu Behuria, Secretary for Heavy Industries, Alok Rawat, Secretary for Water Resources and Naved Masood, Secretary for Corporate Affairs. If Behuria misses the opportunity, he is slated to retire in August. Though seniority is the obvious benchmark, the decision on naming a Cabinet Secretary would depend on the new Government and its priorities. So the suspense is going to last for a while! But most babu-watchers believe that having a Cabinet Secretary in place is a priority for any new Government.

Changing The Guard

Finance Secretary Sumit Bose’s retirement will bring in a set of new faces in the higher echelons of the Finance Ministry. A 1979-batch IAS officer Rajiv Takru, who is Secretary of Department of Financial Services has been named Revenue Secretary and will replace Bose. Sources say Arvind Mayaram, presently Secretary for Economic Affairs, is expected to be named Finance Secretary, who is usually the senior-most among all Finance Ministry Secretaries. In place of Takru, sources say, the Appointments Committee of Cabinet has appointed Gurdial Singh Sandhu, a 1980batch IAS officer from the Rajasthan cadre. Sandhu was Principal Secretary for Urban Development and Housing in Rajasthan. However, babu-watchers are keenly waiting to hear the appointment of a new Economic Adviser in the Finance Ministry. The post has been vacant since Raghuram Rajan became Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. – Dilip Cherian

PMO dismisses Baru’s claims as ‘baseless and mischievous’ N

EW DELHI: The Prime Minister's Office on Sunday rubbished as 'baseless and mischievous' the contention of former media adviser to PM Sanjaya Baru that PMO files were seen by Congress President Sonia Gandhi. "The statement being attributed to a former media adviser to the Prime Minister that PMO files were seen by the Congress President, Smt. Sonia Gandhi is completely baseless and mischievous. It is categorically denied that any PMO file has ever been shown to Smt. Sonia Gandhi," PMO spokesman Pankaj Pachauri told PTI. He was responding to the claims by Baru in his book 'Accidental Prime Minister – The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh' and comments to media that the Prime Minister's Principal Secretary Pulok Chatterjee would seek "instructions" from Gandhi on important PMO decisions. Criticising Baru, the PMO statement said, "The book written by the former media

Insider trading? Sanjaya Baru. adviser is an attempt to misuse a privileged position and access to high office to gain credibility and to apparently exploit it for commercial gain". Pachauri said, "The commentary smacks of fiction and coloured views of a former adviser". The statement reiterated that "the question about comments of the former media adviser was raised by senior editors when they met the Prime Minister in October last year. His answer was "Do not believe all he is saying". The PMO statement

came as opposition launched a scathing attack on Gandhi and the Prime Minister, citing the claims by Baru. In his book, Baru has written, "Pulok, who was inducted into the Manmohan Singh PMO at the behest of Sonia Gandhi, had regular, almost daily, meetings with Sonia at which he was said to brief her on the key policy issues of the day and seek her instructions on important files to be cleared by the PM. "Indeed, Pulok was the single most point of regular contact between PM and Sonia. He was also the PMO's main point of contact with the NAC, a high profile advisory body chaired by Sonia Gandhi, with social activists as members. It was sometimes dubbed the shadow cabinet." As the observations created a flutter, Baru said, "it was not a secret." He said it was well known that Chatterjee was Sonia Gandhi's secretary when she was the leader of opposition and had also worked with the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation chaired by her.

Granada defeat leaves Barca’s title hopes in tatters Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in

ADRID: Barcelona’s La Liga title hopes suffered a huge blow as they lost 1-0 at Granada to slip to a second consecutive defeat. Algerian Yacine Brahimi scored the only goal yesterday after 16 minutes as Barca failed to find a way past the inspired Orestis Karnezis in the Granada goal. Defeat rounds off an awful week for Barca as they were also dumped out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid on Wednesday. The Catalans are now third in La Liga, a point behind both Real Madrid and Atletico after Real cruised to a 4-0 win over Almeria at the Santiago Bernabeu thanks to goals from Angel di Maria, Gareth Bale, Isco and Alvaro Morata. Atletico, who now just need to win five of their remaining six games to claim a first La Liga title in 18 years, can

Baroda, UP evenly matched in Mushtaq Ali tourney final M

UMBAI: It will be a battle of equals when Uttar Pradesh and Baroda clash in the final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Twenty20 tournament at the Wankhede stadium here tomorrow. The two teams had entered the title round by topping their respective groups A and B in similar fashion, by virtue of finishing with the best net run rate in their pools after finishing level on points with another team. While UP edged out Goa in Rajkot, Baroda stuttered against Kerala in final game and went through on superior NRR. Both Uttar Pradesh and Baroda appear to be evenly matched, having won all their zonal ties to make it to the knockout stage. Baroda could enjoy a slight advantage, having played in these conditions in their zonal leg as well as the knock-out stages.Baroda’s seven-match winning streak in the tournament was snapped by Kerala and they would be hoping that the loss was an aberration. The West Zone champions have relied mostly on the bowlers to secure wins in the tournament. Left-arm medium pacer Lukman Meriwala is the leading wicket taker in the tournament, with 18 scalps, including a five-for against Delhi. The 22-year-old has picked up a wicket in each match and skipper Aditya Waghmode will be relying on his expertise.Left-arm spinner Krunal Pandya and leftarm medium pacer Hardik Pandya have also proved their mettle. Barca boss Gerardo Martino shared Iniesta’s analysis of the game and said he couldn’t fault his players’ performance as they racked up 29 efforts on goal and enjoyed over 80 percent of the possession. ‘Matters no longer in own hands’ “We no longer have matters in our own hands, but I couldn’t ask for anything more from the players,” he said.”They tried in every way possible. They created plenty of chances, but today it wasn’t to be. I can’t criticise them for anything apart from obviously not finishing off the chances we had.” Martino had made four changes from the side that startedWednesday’s 1-0 defeat to Atletico with a makeshift back four made up

Esteban kept the hosts in the game early on as he made a fine save to deny Bale opening the scoring, but Angel di Maria eventually made the breakthrough with a curling left-footed effort 28 minutes in. IN BRIEF On-track incident ends Karthikeyan’s weekend on low note

SUZUKA CIRCUIT (JAPAN): After a sensational start to his 2014 Super Formula season here with a front row qualifying result, Narain Karthikeyan’s maiden weekend in the series came to a premature end after an on-track incident with eventual winner Loic Duval ended his chances of a top five finish. The Indian, supported by Tata Sons and Tata Motors, had qualified on the front row yesterday but had to start fifth after being slapped with a three-place grid penalty as he was adjudged to have impeded another car during free practice.”It has been a disappointing end to the weekend after a promising start. We should have started on the front row but were fifth on the grid and then the incident with Duval scrapped any remaining hopes”, remarked Narain.

UMBAI: Olympic bronze medallist Leander Paes has declared himself available for the Davis Cup match against Serbia which is slated to be played in September this year. His announcement comes days after his former partner Mahesh Bhupathi versed the same opinion as Paes. However, the major decision would rest with the All India Tennis Association [AITA] after politics played a spoiler during the selection of the Olympic team for England. Also, it has to be resolved whether the AITA would want to shy away from rewarding the same team, which defeated South Korea in the Davis Cup recently. The Indian team which overcame the Korean defense comprised off Somdev Devvarman, Rohan Bopanna, Saketh Myneni, Sanam Singh and Yuki Bhambri. However, one-half of the former ‘Indian Express’, Leander Paes said he wouldn’t shy away from playing or either heading the side against

the Serbs. “I have never shied away from call of duty. If there is a right time, down the track to come and play as a member or to come in as a captain at the right time, definitely I wouldn’t shy away from that. The Davis Cup against Serbia, especially the double’s tie is very important. Therefore I wouldn’t shy away from it,” said Leander Paes on the sidelines of inaugration of Spirit of CCI triathlon when asked about his availability for the Davis Cup. However, he almost discounted the possibility of Rohan Bopanna and Saket Myneni to counter the Serbian onslaught, terming it a ‘tough ask’. “Can Saket and Rohan go and win that tie? That’s a tough ask.” When asked about the newly launched Indian Soccer League, he said, “Football is still my number one sport. Football to me is one of the biggest games in the world. It is about bringing communities together an ISL will bring people together. It is an IPL format and we have done it in cricket very successfully and I think football is really the way to go.”

we will try to utilise it and try to win the trophy. The more we enjoy cricket, it will be that much better in IPL. In IPL there is a lot of enjoyment for the players. Everybody is relaxed coming from the international schedule. There is a good atmosphere and we will try to utilise it,” he said.

EERUT: Athletics Federation of India today decided not to ratify Merlin K Joseph’s national-record bettering effort in women’s 100m dash last year, setting at rest the controversy regarding the matter. Controversy had struck in National Open Athletics Championships in Ranchi in September last as Joseph’s new national record timing in women’s 100m dash was questioned by Rachita Mistry in whose name the mark had stood since 2000. Joseph ran 11.35 secs in the semifinal heats to shatter Mistry’s 13-yearold national record of11.38 secs created in Trivandrum in 2000. Joseph has a personal best of 11.75 secs before the National Open. Mistry, an Olympian and a top sprinter in the 1990s, said she suspected either a faulty timing system or some people were playing mischief as such a gap in timings was hard to believe in 100m race. She had written a letter to the AFI to find out the correct position.”After detailed deliberations in the general body meeting of AFI held here, it was decided NOT to RATIFY the 100m performance (11.35s) of Merlin K Joseph as a National Record due to doubts arised about the above mark,” the AFI said after its two-day Annual General Body Meeting. The AFI also said it’s planning to host an international Grand Prix in India. “The AFI is planning to bring a world-class event to India and we are already in touch with our counterparts in other countries and hopeful that they will send their top athletes to participate,” AFI President Adille Sumariwalla said in a release. In appreciation of their efforts to promote athletics in India, the ONGC has also been awarded full membership in AFI during the GBM.

Santoso shocks Lee to win Singapore Open S

ingapore: Unseeded Indonesian Simon Santoso pulled off a major shock when he thrashed badminton’s world number one Lee Chong Wei to win the Singapore Open for the first time today. The 28year-old, considered a rank outsider against Malaysia’s imperious Lee, upset the form book in style with an emphatic 21-15, 21-10 victory in just 48 minutes in the Singapore final. Santoso reeled off nine straight points to stifle Lee’s second-game revival and take the match, dropping his racquet to the court and raising his arms in celebration in front of a bemused crowd. The third Superseries tournament win for the 52nd-ranked Santoso cements a stirring comeback by the former world number three, who dropped out of the top 100 last year following back problems. “I am really satisfied with my performance especially after beating one of the best players, Lee Chong Wei, in the final. I am really happy and proud,” Santoso said.”I am really happy (because) it’s been a while since I beat Chong Wei and also because I fought hard from the qualification rounds here in Singapore.” It was only Santoso’s second win in 11 matches against the All-England champion, who had lost just once this year. But Lee, 31, downplayed the loss, saying it was “only the Singapore Open”.”This is just a Superseries, there are still many other important tournaments. I just take care not to get an injury at the competition,” the 33-time Superseries tournament winner told reporters.”I just tried and just enjoy for Singapore and not go so hard,” Lee said.
