In addition, the pop-up will have an“I'm a Voter” button. Facebook users will be able to post their story to the Facebook timeline, therefore enabling them to inform their friends that they are voting in these elections. The Election Day message and I'm a Voter button will only be visible to voters in regions and constituencies where polling is taking place, therefore urging users to go ahead at the relevant time for their area, vote and then update their status by clicking on the I'm a Voter button. So, can politics and our netas be spared from radar of this quick, easy and to a certain extent reliable source of information? If one goes by a random search on Google's Play Store, there are hundreds of applications related to politics. Some let you know if your name is registered as a voter in your constituency so that you can exercise your right to vote, some help you know about the candidates contesting the election representing your constituency so that you make an informed choice and take the right decision and some give you a platform to lodge a complaint about violations of electoral codes of conduct because only fairly conducted elections will give us the right results. Satish Singh, a student and app user told the ADC: “These apps are very useful. I was unaware about my voter registration number, and when I logged into these apps I was able to find my number as well as the polling booth which was provided on a map. These applications make it easy for the voters to get the needed information about the LS elections”. The ADC gives you a sneak peek into some of these applications that gives us a better understanding of politics, our representatives and our rights as citizens of India.

The function was held at the Cosmopolitan School in Mira Road, under the aegis of Parents of Down Syndrome, a social trust working towards the welfare of children with the genetic disorder. Other than the competition, the participants enthralled the audience with their spectacular performances. “Apart from an evening of entertainment for kids, the event was or-

ganised to create awareness about those suffering from Down Syndrome and sensitise the society of the various aspects of care and support required for them, especially efforts to include them into the mainstream,” said Angela Stanley, one of the trustees of the organisation which has been actively organising medical camps, seminars and activity centres for the children in the twin city.

PI(A) leader Ramdas Athawale on Monday said he plans to emulate BSP chief Mayawati's social engineering in Uttar Pradesh to expand his party's base in Maharashtra. "There are more factions in BSP than the RPI but that is not affecting Mayawati's vote share because of the social engineering and connect with people. I want to do the same in Maharashtra in the next few years," Athawale told PTI. At the same time, he also said that Mayawati had no right to criticise him for aligning with BJP because she herself became chief minister of UP thrice with support of the saffron party. Uttar Pradesh has 24 per cent Dalits as compared to Maharashtra which has 9 to 14 per cent, he said. "The politics in Maharashtra is such that no single party can come to power on its own," he said, adding that he would strive for an all inclusive RPI as envisaged by Babasaheb Ambedkar. He lamented that there was no unity between the various RPI factions and the leaders had split. "But we will try to bring as

The 'Mahayuti' (grand alliance) campaign is getting a good response and the alliance is expected to get 36 seats out of the total 48, Athawale said. "More than one lakh votes which MNS got in each of the constituency it contested in 2009 will be transferred to the Sena-BJP combine (this time)," he claimed. The RPI(A) leader also criticised the Congress for 'deliberately' trying to spread misconceptions about BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. each candidate 'Live'.

Debating the undebatable

Given that six people on a television studio panel, including the news anchor himself, all yelling and screaming at the same time, or talking completely at cross purposes, or refusing to be swayed by an opponent's argument, constitutes what the public perceives as a debate, it is most interesting to note that an actual “give and take” in happening between Goa and Gujarat currently. And perhaps precisely because the long-distance debate is not taking place in a studio, and is occurring through the media at regular intervals, it promises to grow into something remarkable that can actually add to the sum total of information on a particular subject. The protagonists are the Chief Minister of Goa Manohar Parrikar (in the BJP corner), and Jesuit priest Cedric Prakash, director Prashant, the Ahmedabad-based Jesuit centre for human rights, justice and peace. Three weeks ago, Prakash was in Goa, addressing groups of people, mostly Catholics, on the elections, and the need to keep in mind the dire effect of corruption, casteism and the criminalisation of politics. There was immediate backlash, some of it from within the community itself. But it was in

talking about the Freedom of Religion Bill, 2003, that he seems to have stepped on some very important toes. None other than the chief minister came back very sharply indeed, to talk about how Prakash was “misinforming the public.” He also reminded the priest of how “safe” he had been in Gujarat for the past 12 years after the riots of 2002, which event had made the latter one of Narendra Modi's bitterest and most consistent critics. Now Father Cedric has picked up the ball lobbed by Parrikar into his court and run with it. This is what he has to say about the charge of “misinforming the public” about the Freedom of Religion Bill passed in Gujarat. “It is against Article 25 of the Constitution and violates Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Mr. Parrikar is intelligent enough to know that I am not speaking about any anticonversion laws. These in the past have been brought in both by Congress and BJP States. I amspeaking of the Freedom of Religion Law of 2003 of the Gujarat Government which necessitates

RARE GLIMPSES OF AN ICON: On the occasion of the 123rd birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar yesterday, rare photographs of the 'Father of the Constitution' are on display at an exhibition at Raj Gruh in Hindu Colony at Dadar, the residence of the late Dr. Ambedkar. The exhibition was inaugurated by Prakash Ambedkar (in pic), the grandson of Dr. Ambedkar, yesterday.

that any person (adult) wanting to change his or her religion must first seek the permission of the District Collector. “This is clearly not about whether I have the right to convert you; but it is about, if I am a Hindu Dalit, whether I have the right to embrace Buddhism freely -- if I feel that Buddhism will help me become a better person. The irony of this law is that the Collector will first have to see if there is any force, or a fraud or an "allurement" (which is material gratification or otherwise). So if the Collector feels that"my becoming a better person" is allurement, he or she can deny you the permission! As recently as February 9, 2014, the Gir Somnath SDM filed a complaint against a woman for converting to Islam "illegally". And then he discusses Parrikar's remark about being “safe” in Gujarat as a matter of perception. “Thanks to the Central Government; there are mechanisms to ensure my safety and security. But this does not mean that I am not intimidated or harassed or even threatened!” When we read the transcript of the chief minister's remarks,

particularly the one about Prakash being safe in Gujarat, we were struck with dismay about how deliberately obtuse he seemed. As admirers of Parrikar's style of functioning in Goa, and the strength of his political will to get things done, we found it disconcerting that he evidently did not expect a reaction to this remark. After all, the fact that organisations like Prashant continue to function in Gujarat in spite of the state's attempts to contain its activities, is well-known! So now we can wait and see

what the Goa chief minister has to say in reply.

Labour has better things to do!

Or at least, that is what we are told during these frantic days of campaigning. That the Congress Party is mopping up most of the labour in the city and paying them Rs.700 per day to come and swell the crowds at rallies and in processions. That this has been stated by a rival party, the Shiv

Members of a small book club in the city are in a regular twitter about retired DGP Kanchan Bhattacharya campaigning for herself as a candidate for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, of all places, and follow her progress closely. That's because she is a member too, and thrills them no end with her stories of going on the stump, making speeches, and discovering that it's a hard slog for everybody this time, but most particularly for AAP candidates and first timers, both of which categories she fills. They are also very concerned about stories in the papers that It's an ill-fitting cap, but Kanchan she is seen as a parachute Bhattacharya is proud to wear it anyway. candidate; that is, she has been foisted upon the area from “above”, since she lives in fellow-members are also chuffed Mumbai. Once again, both these stories may be treated as apocryphal in the abscence of real proof. However, it is true that several projects in the city, especially the building of parks and gardens, will not be completed in time before the monsoon because the workers have suddenly and mysteriously disappeared.

workers of the party in general, because, frankly, she is warm and sincere and very hard-working. Her personal manifesto, if it may be called that, is fairly simple. She wants to be seen as a crusader against corrupt practices, and will do her best to make the area she represents safe and secure for women. That, and building toilets for them will remain her priority. “Imagine”, she says indignantly, “women have to wait for sunset to answer the call of nature, because they have no toilets at home.” As the inspiration for the television serial 'Udaan', made by her sister Kavita Choudhary in the 80's, Kanchan has already shown that it is possible to do one's job very well and still stay above the sea of corruption into which the Indian Police Service seems to sink at times. Going to Parliament and speaking up on behalf of Haridwar should be a cinch for her.

et against an atmosphere of discontent, elections this year are fraught with many pressing questions. To vote or not to vote? What needs to be changed? Can we still expect change? To ascertain the thoughts of voters from the Mumbai North, we spoke to residents of Malad West, Kandivli East, Borivli and Dahisar. Namdeo Raohire, 50, a resident of Malad said, “An MP should take up problems in the Centre.” Deepak Tiwari reiterated that funds were not being brought from the Centre to the states. However, a majority of the people we interviewed were confused about the role of an MP and focused mainly on local issues. Inflation was the primary concern. There was consensus that the most crucial change MPs should be working towards is price stability. Utsav Majithia, 60, a bookseller in Kandivli East, lamented, “Inflation has ruined India.” In Borivali, Dahisar and Malad, citizens said that basic necessities like water and electricity provisions were inadequate. Prema Jadhav, 50, complained, “Our electricity bill has been hiked. I only have one fan, one light and a TV at home and yet it is almost Rs.2,000 every month. The electricity board is uncooperative and no one parts with any details.” Rekha Bhosle said water is available only once in two to three days. Many also felt that most roads were either blocked or clogged in their area and are not maintained well. Teachers from the Thakur College of Science and Commerce in Kandivli East said, “Even though Thakur Village is considered to be one of the most developed areas in the suburbs, roads are terrible.” Many complained that more public hospitals should be built in their areas. Hawkers, especially in the Malad West area, were mostly worried about their livelihood. Lakshmi Ravindrabalani, 52, said, “I’ve been selling vegetables here for 18 years. Still, I have been pushed around by the BMC every day.” She was despondent, “No one cares about our worries.” Ajay Singh, a xerox shop owner said, “The BMC has broken the shutters of my shop despite the fact that I have a license. I can only worry about national problems once these issues are addressed.” Interestingly, Utsave Majithia disclosed that the government has its own illegal constructions, which “serve as a vote bank for the politi-

cians during election time.” Many citizens noticed disparities before and after election time. Prema Jadhav said, “Elections se pehle sabhi haath jod ke aate hain. Uske baad kuchh nahin hota hai.” She went on to reveal that it is common knowledge that ration is available only before and during the elections, and denied to people later. Remembering old promises, Majithia said, “Absolutely nothing has been done about cleaning the sidewalks and drainage system. I don’t know what to expect from MPs anymore…” A strong sense of distrust was also felt by most citizens. Shaukat Mansoori, a shopkeeper in Borivali, said, “Corruption is rampant. I am not concerned about parties and individuals. It’s the whole system…MPs should lead by example.” Madhur Balakrishna Khede, a bookseller at Borivli station, who has been a voter since 25 years, said, “Itna golmaal chal raha hai…Congress ka naam nahin lene ka.” While many people who were originally Congress supporters are now considering the BJP, Sanjay Nirupam still holds the confidence of many in his constituency. Most peo-

She said, “I am open to listening to their ideas but for that I have to see them first…” Prema Jadhav complimented their corruption-free ideology but did not see it as a good enough reason to vote for them. When asked about MPs with criminal records, most people said that they would not knowingly vote for such candidates. However, Lakshmi from Dahisar, who runs a beauty parlour in Borivali said, “It depends on the circumstances. Some times second chances can be given.” A few disappointed people were adamant about voting this year. While many felt that “nothing will change,” and that their votes “do not count,” they have decided to vote anyway. They were not aware that dissent can be officially registered through NOTA. In the midst of such apathy, 90% of the people we interviewed were determined to cast their votes in the upcoming elections. Ashok Jain from Borivali reaffirmed, “Whatever said and done, voting is necessary. It is an important right which must be exercised by all citizens.”

ple felt that Nirupam was an approachable MP. Some took it too far. Ashok, a fruit seller in Malad, said, “Woh humaare liye devta hain.” He also informed us that Nirupam would be coming to his home for dinner later that day. Congress and BJP supporters alike, were aware of Gopal Shetty’s presence. Ravi Bangera said, “Despite not holding office as an MP, he has consistently done good work in this constituency.” People were by and large skeptical of the AAP because of their lack of experience. Ashok Jain, 43, a jewellery shopowner in Borivli, rhetorically questioned, “Kya AAP desh chala payega?” Ravi Bangera, 60, a tobacco stall owner in the same area, said, “Kejriwal should have kept his seat in Delhi, but he left so abruptly.” Arvind Kejriwal’s shortlived tenure as CM of Delhi has caused the people to question the credibility of AAP candidates in general. Many were unaware of AAP’s contestant in the Mumbai North, Satish Jain. Rekha Bhosle, 37, from Dahisar, said that she had not seen or heard Jain campaigning in and around her area.

local court has sentenced a 33-year-old man from the district to rigorous imprisonment of five years for driving his 21-year-old wife to commit suicide over dowry of Rs.500 in 2002. Kalyan Additional Sessions Court judge A.Z. Telgote in his order pronounced recently held Shaniwar Soma Warghada guilty under various sections of the IPC for abetting the suicide of his wife Mamta. The court, however, acquitted Warghada's mother Devkibai (50) for want of evidence, while imposing fine of Rs 500 on the convict. According to the prosecution, Mamta was subjected to harassment by the accused and his family members for dowry since her marriage. Fed up of the harassment and her inability to bring the money, Mamta set herself ablaze on August 14, 2002 at her husband's residence in Chinchavali of Ambernath. She died on way to hospital the next day. Accepting the prosecution's argument, the judge said, "the deceased was constrained to end her life within five months after marriage.

"The perusal of the testimony of prosecution witness Kisan Hindola, the victim's father, shows the deceased gave dying declaration to him saying she was fed up with

the torture by her husband. In my opinion, the evidence discussed above, proves the cruelty as required under Section 498-A of IPC," the judge said.

17th watch & clock fair to be held in Mumbai By A Staff Reporter

T

he 17th India international mega watch & clock fair 'Samaya Bharati 2014' will be held in in the city between May 1 and 4. The event is organised by the Watch Trade Federation and supported by other trade bodies. 'Samaya Bharati 2014' will be showcasing latest creations of watches, clocks, components, watch movements, watch straps/ bracelets, packaging, accessories & lifestyle products, a statement said. The fair will display latest products and innovations of around 100 brands from India, Switzerland, Japan, France, Belgium, USA, Korea, Middle East, Denmark, China, Hong Kong, Italy and Spain, reports PTI. Among some of the additional features of the upcoming edition will be the participation of many brands, which will be either entirely new or just debuted in India for the very first time.

This will also include some of the Crème de la Crème brands. The new trend is seen in ceramic, rose gold, yellow gold and blackie watches with attractive packing. Hemal Mihir Kharod, chief organiser, said the size of the Indian watch & clock industry is estimated to the tune of around Rs 10,000 crore. "The present levels of import duties, multi-point taxation and other intermediary levies imposed upon watches are far too high and at times going up to the extent of nearly 60 per cent of the actual cost of the watch, making the product entirely unviable,” Kharod said. The fair is expected to have footfall of around 40,000 trade and other visitors. In this fair, manufacturers, distributors, agents, traders, retailers, mall owners, exporters, importers, designers & creative artists along with watch lovers across India and from abroad will meet, discuss and explore new opportunities.

Elections adversely impacting gold trade By Mayura Shanbaug

I

f gold traders and jewellers are to be believed, the Lok Sabha election process is impacting their business in a negative way, resulting in a drop in business by almost 70 to 80 per cent.According to Hasmukh Bafna, president of Gold Chains & Jewellery Wholesalers Welfare Association, the gold trade since ages has practiced cash transaction for buying and selling of gold. “But with the election code of conduct coming in to force, there is a restrictionimposed on carrying cash in large denominations,” he explains. Bafna informs that several of the traders have been harassed by the authorities for carrying cash or even gold for their business despite having valid documents. “You are required to pay cash in order to buy gold, as not all gold importers accept cheques or demand drafts because of the fear of them bouncing or being fake. In case, the traders are caught carrying any denomination over Rs.50,000, they are taken into custody and harassed for hours before being let off,” he adds. Gold prices too has witnessed some cooling off with the price of the yellow metal

dropping from the all time high level of Rs.32,000 per 10 gram to around Rs.28,500 – Rs.29,000 per 10 gram recently. “Customers too are cautious of purchasing jewellery till the elections are over as they too fear carrying cash. So though the price of gold has dropped a bit, we won’t be able to benefit from the fall in the prices,” Lalit Jain, proprietor of Kalbadevi-based Mahaveer Jewellers informs. The price of precious metals like Gold and silver has been consistently witnessing a drop since the last several months. While gold is trading in the Rs.29,900 levels, silver price too have witnessed a drop and is trading in the Rs.44,000 per kg levels. Kantibhai Shah of Malad-based Abhishek Jewellers explains that this Akshay Tritiya too, they are anticipating the demand to be low due to the election code of conduct. “Several traders that I know have stopped business till the elections are over. We hope that the pricescontinue to remain low even after the elections, so that demand goes up,” he adds. The election code of conduct was announced in the first week of March after which authorities regularly conduct raids to prevent any kind of malpractice during elections.

After oo DESPATCH & COURIER Good Luck!

Dear Students, It has finally come – the SSC examination for which you have worked and waited this whole year. From Monday onwards, the process begins, though for those appearing in the English medium, there is a two-day breather with the examinations beginning on Wednesday. For most of you, this will be a first time experience in the public examination system. And because it is your first tiny step towards the academic stream that will launch you on a career, it is bound to be a little alarming as well. Needless to say, whether you finally opt for Science, Arts or Commerce, your performance in these exams matter. The good news is that each stream offers tremendous opportunities today. So do your best towards getting admission in the college of your choice. At this final hour, I would merely say - do not be tense about the examination. Go to the examination hall with a relaxed and cheerful mind. Enter the requisite information on the answer booklet. Do not leave that for the end in case you forget. When you get the question paper, go through it carefully. If you feel at a loss through nervousness, look out for the questions you can answer immediately. Make a note of the questions you will be able to answer or you wish to attempt, given the options. Count your options and don’t by mistake answer more than you should have. In the end, quickly go through all that you have written and check out if you have forgotten to answer a question or sub-question. The ADC has put itself out to provide you a year-long revision programme that we are sure you found useful. And it has not ended with the start of the examinations. From March 3 to March 7, login in to afternoondc.in and go to SSC Countdown, where we shall be carrying question and answer papers in General Mathematics, Sanskrit, Sanskrit Entire and Sanskrit Essay. lmost after three days the Versova police has successfully arrested the prime accused and solved the Iqra jewellery shop robbery case and recovered all the booty including 2 kg gold and cash worth over Rs.two lakh, collectively worth Rs.58.73 lakh. Talking to media persons, Additional Commissioner of Police (West region) Milind Bharambhe said, “We have arrested a teenager from Rajasthan who played a vital role in the pre-planned act with the help of his cousin who was employed in the jewellery store. The arrested accused have been identified as Ravi Vaishnav (19), while his cousin Mukesh Vaishnav is still recuperating in the hospital and is the key conspirator in the case. Ravi Vaishnav was tracked down, police said adding that, “during thorough and sustained interrogation, Ravi confessed to the crime. He revealed that the crime was preplanned and executed with the help of his cousin Mukesh, who was an employee in the shop." Police claimed that injuries on Mukesh were self-inflicted to make it look like he was attacked bu the robbers. Mukesh, who had been working in the shop for nearly a year plotted the robbery, and meticulously executed it with the help of Ravi, police said The entire stolen jewellery and cash were recovered from Ravi, police said adding that Mukesh is recuperating in hospital and will also be placed under arrest once he recovers. that Mukesh, who used to work in the jewellery shop had hatched the plan and injured himself to escape suspicion. On the day of the incident, Khalid Ahmed Hakim (52), owner of Iqra jewellery store at Vaishali Nagar, had left to offer prayers when the "robbery" took place and the accused had not only decamped with the valuables and cash but also took away the hard disk of the CCTV camera at the location. While probing the case, investigators grew suspicious about Mukesh as the robbers surprisingly did not touch the duplicate jewellery in the shop and no significant damage was caused to the equipment when the CCTV's hard disk was removed, Bharambhe added. While interrogating Mukesh, the police came to know that his cousin Ravi was involved in criminal activities and was hiding in Munda taluka of Rajsamand district in Rajasthan. A trap was laid and the suspect, Versova police personnel proudly displaying the recovered ornaments.

The TCS iElect app is a completely new way to observe, analyse and participate in the social conversations around the world's largest general elections. Clarification In our report on Monday, April 14, titled 'Princeton Universal wants access to Sadhana's garden', the report had erroneously mentioned that the Bombay High Court had turned down the request of the firm that Sadhana should not obstruct their representatives from accessing her side of the property and that Sadhana not be allowed to deface the realty firm's name board, trespass on the remaining open space inside the compound, interfere with the right of the security guards and interfere with the firm's development of the property. We wish to clarify that the court had allowed the firm's request and stated that it had allowed the plaintiff (Princeton Universal) to post security guards in three shifts at the main entrance of the suit property and also permitted to get repairs and renovation work through its employees without disturbing the defendant (actress Sadhana) according to the ad interim order dated March 4, 2013. The order has also mentioned “that the firm shall be entitled to exercise its ownership rights pending the suit. Special eyes on election duty

By Zuber Ansari

he Mumbai Police are gearing up for the Lok Sabha elections just around the corner with tighter duties and sharper eyes on candidate road activities, public meetings and the Sabhas in their constituencies. Around 800 police personnel, in co-ordination with the BMC and Election Commission officers, have been specially deployed for election duty. They play an important role keeping tabs on the activity of every candidate, to check if they violate the Model Code of Conduct. Speaking to ADC, Mumbai police spokesperson and Deputy Commissioner of Police, Dr.Mahesh Patil said, “We have set up two election squads: the flying squad and the static squad. In each of the squads there are 108 police personnel. They patrol their designated constituency and Dr.Mahesh Patil, Deputy Commissioner of co-ordinate with the EC and BMC Police, Mumbai

officials.” Patil added that in each constituency, there are three different squads working in 15-member teams. And although 800 personnel have been deployed for this special duty, every police station has been asked to provide extra staff if required. When we asked him about the daily routine of the Mumbai Police during the election period, he said, “Both the squads will be conducting fixed point checking. These squads consist of personnel from the police, BMC, revenue, state excise and other departments. We are also recording videos in case of any violation.” The special squads are also keeping a close eye on migrants into the city. But till now, no substantial information has been received about illegal activity. Some cash was earlier seized in Borivli and other parts of the city, but investigations rendered them legal, added Patil.

Thane LS: Shiv Sena seeks EC's extra care at 114 poll centres which registered unbelievable figures for NCP in 2009

I

n a startling exposure that could give sleepless nights to the State Election Commission, the local Shiv Sena leadership has raised a serious question mark over the legitimacy of the 2009 results of around 114 polling centres in the Thane parliamentary constituency. A detailed list of 114 centres released by Sena candidate Rajan Vichare revealed that while at most of the polling centres almost all the votes were registered in favour of NCP’s Sanjeev Naik, a significant number of polling stations witnessed 100 per cent voting in favour of Naik. His Shiv Sena and MNS rivals failed to garner a single vote in some of the centres. “Such type of results giving 100 per cent mandate to a single candidate is really strange, abnormal and smacks of an evil ploy.

We have asked the EC to take extra care at these particular centres,” Vichare said while addressing media persons in Mira Road on Monday. This parliamentary constituency was known to be fortress and traditional base of the saffron alliance, till NCP’s Dr. Sanjeev Naik, created history by dethroning the Sena and trouncing its candidate Vijay Chowgule, in a triangular contest by a margin of over 49,000 votes in 2009. While Naik emerged victorious by polling 3,01,000 votes, Chowgule garnered 2,51,980 followed by Rajan Raje’s ( MNS) significant tally of 1,34,840 votes. Around 65 such centres were located in Mira Road which has a significant presence of Muslim voters, where such results are a natural phenomenon, sources revealed. Over 18 lakh voters will exercise their franchise on April 24.

Ponder awhile... “Life is beautiful, as long as it consumes you. When it is rushing through you, destroying you, life is gorgeous, glorious. It’s when you burn a slow fire and save fuel, that life’s not worth having.” — D. H. Lawrence

Is Manmohan Singh really a weak PM? I

t is not Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who is responsible for corrupt practices and weak governance by the UPA: The Congress leader Sonia Gandhi was making changes in various important papers that were sent to her by the Prime Minister. Sonia Gandhi, who was in remote control, was in fact governing the country. She had the ultimate say in all important issues. The Prime Minister was not happy about A. Raja's corrupt 2G scam but the “remote control” stepped in and took decisions. In a book published by Sanjay Baru, former adviser of the PM exposes how the PM was helplessly under the remote control. Another book by the former coal secretary P.C. Parakh shows the PM as a man of integrity, but says that he was a weak prime minister. He had no control over ministers: they used to ignore the revisions he used to make in important files and used to have their own way. Bureaucrats were forced to work as slaves of their political masters. Mr. Parakh has also stated he has himself seen party members of parliament extorting and blackmailing the prime minister. Quite a few of the coal blocks were given away to private parties on recommendations of the Congress leaders. Under the weak rule by the prime minister, degeneration in the political system had taken place. Exposures like these by Sanjay Baru point accusing fingers at prime minister Manmohan Singh. What becomes apparent is that the UPA government has quite a few ministers and bureaucrats, who are prepared to be “slaves”, that are corrupt. The Congress party cannot escape blame. Those in influential and right places have done well and prospered. The nation had a raw deal. The exposures of Sanjay Baru and P.C. Parakh have exposed corruption which has tainted the whole system which existed for ten years of UPA rule.

may question the timing, practically on the eve of polling for the Lok Sabha election, of the disclosure of the conspiracy behind the demolition of Babri Masjid at Ayodhya in 1992. I do not know how this has helped the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) at the polls during which it shed the development factor and came out in true colours, the proHindu stance. Its election manifesto is a bit accommodative on the mandir and seeks solution within the constitutional framework. But the BJP remains adamant on Article 370 which is an integral part of the process of Jammu and Kashmir’s accession to India. The other main party, the Congress, did not lag behind in communalising the environment. The party marshaled Shahi Imam Bukhari and other Muslim clerics behind. The party did not care about the oft-repeated allegation against it that the Congress goes out of the way to appease the Muslims.

assembled from different parts of the country, particularly Maharashtra, on December 6, 1992. The Justice Liberhan report is an indictment of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) which has taken 22 years to complete the probe as it claims to have done. More than that it is an indictment of public figures that were part of the conspiracy but parade themselves as an apostle of virtues. Other BJP leaders, some of whom I see on various channels of television, do not minimise the sin by arguing that no sting operation has been carried out in the case of corruption deals by the Congress. This can be done even belatedly. But the Sangh parivar cannot be absolved of its nefarious activities. I knew all along that Narasimha Rao, then the Congress Prime Minister, had blessed the destruction. He had the army deployed in the

Liberhan report reaffirmed Yet, I commend the meticulous job of piecing together the bits of information through sting operations spread over three years to bring to light the plan to destroy the masjid. The news portal, which has divulged the details, says that the demolition was an “act of planned sabotage”. It was meticulously planned, rehearsed and executed. This confirms what Justice M.S. Liberahan had said in his report on the demolition. He has reiterated in a press interview: “It stands beyond doubt that the events of the day were neither spontaneous nor unplanned, nor an unforeseen overflowing of the people’s emotion. Narendra Modi was part of the L.K. Advani’s rath yatra in support of mandir.” What has pained me is the fact that both Atal Behari Vajpayee and Advani knew about the proposed demolition—the plan and the exercise carried out for demolition. I was honestly taken in by Vajpayee’s argument that it was an act of people’s spontaneous emotions and had no prior planning behind it. When Advani resigned from the Lok Sabha taking moral responsibility, I really believed that he was speaking the truth. I feel cheated. The alacrity with which he withdrew the resignation within 24 hours indicates hypocrisy. And Vajpayee still plugs the line that it was a spontaneous reaction of the crowd. This is not true because half a million sevaks were

Modi must prove he is secular BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar vicinity and was bound to use it when the Supreme Court had said to maintain the status quo, that is, to protect the Babri masjid. Not a single soldier was moved to defend the mosque, nor ever the proposal to surround the structure with tanks to ward off any attack. What Socialist leader Madhu Limaye had told left me with no room for any doubt about Rao’s involvement. Limaye said that when the demolition began, Rao sat for puja. There were frantic calls from his colleagues to reach out to him to take action against those who were engaged in destroying the mosque, but instructed that he should not be disturbed. When the destruction was complete, Rao’s aide whispered into his ears that the process was complete. Rao finished his puja.

n Asia, it is considered the highest honor if a member of one's family leaves the home life. Westerners, however, may be shocked at the idea of anyone leaving their family to become a monk or nun. They may think this is selfish and turning one's back on the world. In fact, monks and nuns are not selfish at all. They dedicate themselves to helping others. They don't wish to own a lot of things, or to have money or power. They give these things up to gain something far more valuable-spiritual freedom. By living a pure simple life with others on the same path, they are able to lessen their greed, hatred, and ignorance. Although monks and nuns live in a monastery, they do not entirely give up their families. They are allowed to visit and take care of them when they are ill. A day in a temple begins early for monks and nuns. Long before daybreak, they attend morning ceremony and chant praises to the Buddha. The ceremonies lift one's spirit and bring about harmony. Although the Sangha lead simple lives, they have many responsibilities to fulfill. Everyone works diligently and is content with his or her duties. During the day, some monks and nuns go about teaching in schools or speaking the Buddha's teachings. Others may revise and translate Buddhist Sutras and books, make Buddha images, take care of the temple and

The masjid’s demolition was followed by communal riots, particularly in Mumbai. Rao invited some senior journalists to seek media help to normalise the situation. I was one of the invitees. I asked Rao how a small temple had come to be built overnight when the centre had taken over the administration after dismissing the state government ruled by the BJP. He answered me: the temple would not be there for long. Twenty two years have gone by since the demolition. I had reminded Rao of his assurance on several occasions when he was still in power. But no action has been taken despite my repeated writings. The small temple stands there even today and the talk to accommodate the Muslims by building a mosque next to the mandir is not heard anymore. I can understand and even appreciate the arguments of those who claim that it was the Ram Janambhoomi and not the Babri Masjid. But when lakhs of Ram Sevaks gather there and even beat up a few Gandhians who objected to violence, the dictum sought to be proved is that the majority community would have the way through peace, if possible, or by force, if necessary.

gardens, prepare for ceremonies, give advice to laypeople, and care for the elders and those who are sick. The day ends with a final evening ceremony. In the daily life of work and religious practice, the monks and nuns conduct themselves properly and are highly respected. By leading a pure, simple life, they gain extraorinary insight into the nature of things. Al-

MATTER & SPIRIT though their life is hard and rigorous, the results are worth it. It also keeps them healthy and energetic. The laity, who live in the temple or visits, follows the same schedule as the Sangha and works along with them. Ideally, monks and nuns own only a few things, such as robes and an offering bowl. While most people spend lots of time and money on their hair, Buddhist monks and nuns shave their heads. They are no longer concerned with outward beauty, but with developing their spiritual lives. The shaven head is a reminder that the monks and nuns have renounced the home life and are a part of the Sangha. Offering food to monks and nuns is a part of Buddhism. In Asia, it is not unusual to see monks walking towards the villages early in the morning carrying their offering bowls.

In fact, the Babri Masjid’s destruction is a watershed in our country’s ethos of pluralism. The Muslim community began to tilt on the side of extremists ever since. Its faith in secular society was shaken and it went to the extent of not protesting against terrorists. If I were to trace militancy among the Muslims I would find the demolition of Babri Masjid as the beginning. The community feels insecure, particularly on the prospects of Modi becoming the Prime Minister. All that I can say is that India has been a multi-religious society for centuries and society has learnt to live that way. If Modi tries to undo the reality, he will find defiance all over. He may even jeopardise the country’s integrity. I wish the BJP election manifesto had mentioned at least once the word of secularism. Although the new converts to the BJP argue that when the party swears by the constitution, it expresses is faith in secularism without spelling it out. I wish it were so because when the Babri Masjid was demolished it was done despite the constitution. They do not beg for food, but accept whatever is offered. This practice not only helps the monks and nuns to be humble, but gives laypeople an opportunity to give. In some countries laypeople go to the monastery to make offerings. The robes of monks and nuns are simple and made from cotton or linen. Their color varies according to different countries. For instance, yellow robes are mostly worn in Thailand, while black robes are worn in Japan. In China and Korea, gray and brown robes are worn for work, while more elaborate robes are used for ceremonies. Dark red robes are worn in Tibet. Robes and offering bowls are very important to monks and nuns. The Buddha said, "Just as a bird takes its wings with it wherever it flies, so the monk takes his robes and bowl with him wherever he goes." The laity are very important in Buddhism, for they are the supporting members of the Buddhist community. They build the temples and monasteries and give offerings of food, robes, bedding, and medicine to the monks and nuns. This enables the Sangha to carry on the Buddha's work. In this way the Sangha and laity benefit each other and together keep the Dharma alive. In Buddhism, it is also important to support the poor and needy. Giving to support religious people, however, is considered a very meritorious deed. The Buddha not only encouraged giving to Buddhists, but to any spiritual person who is sincere. — Gautam Buddha

THIS refers to the report 'PMO dismisses Baru's claims as 'baseless and mischievous' (ADC, Apr.14). The timing of Sanjay Baru's book, 'Accidental Prime Minister -- The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh' does strengthen the allegation of the PMO that this former media adviser is a disgruntled man since he was not given another term and so has now come out with a book misusing his earlier privileged position and access to high office to exploit it for commercial gain. He has followed in the footsteps of M.O. Mathai, an assis-

The world knows that it was Sonia Gandhi who made Dr. Manmohan Singh Prime Minister, foregoing that privilege herself, sensing the mood of the people. Therefore, apart from playing into the hands of the Opposition which is in a mood even to use a straw to hit the Congress, Baru has not served any other purpose. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane

eart receives blood through the coronary arteries. The blockage in these arteries is called Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). CHD has become a major public health problem in India and has reached epidemic proportion. Today the average age of a person suffering from CHD has come down drastically. This is mainly a result of today’s changing and challenging lifestyles. Infact the rate of CHD in Indian community, particularly young men is almost twice as in western counterparts. Risk factors causing rise of CHD in India are urbanization, unhealthy diet, reduced physical activity and stress. Other intermediate risk factors are diabetes, dyslipidaemia, hypertension, obesity, smoking and metabolic syndrome. India is the diabetic capital of the world with more than 50 million diabetics. It has also the highest proportion of obesity and metabolic syndrome.

Dr.DEVIDAS RAMAYA SHEREGAR, MD (Mum) PHYSICIAN AND CARDIOLOGIST email:drsheregar@rediffmail.com

Goals for prevention of CHD should be:

1) We should have public health programs for promotion of health awareness like healthy lifestyle, health promoting diet, intake of calories appropriate to the level of physical activity, moderation in the intake of saturated fats, salt and refined sugar and high intake of fibres, fresh fruits and vegetables, adequate physical activity, regular exercises, yoga and meditation sessions, stoppage of smoking and tobacco chewing and alcohol intake. 2) Periodic health check-up of blood pressure, blood sugar, lipid profile. 3) Undergoing medical and surgical check-up

like treadmill test and CT coronary angiography. 4) Continuing care and self management for prevention of major complications in patients with existing CHD. So every working and nonworking individual should take out one hour of their daily time for moderate exercises like walking, jogging, cycling, floor exercises and dancing. It will be very healthy if working population is made to work for 8-10 hours a day with 5days of working per week.

Now it’s time to say NO TO SMOKING/TOBACCO CHEWING/ALCOHOL/FAST FOODS AND PARTIES.

some sunflower seeds a day... … keep hunger at bay? Research suggests that sunflower seeds can help kill hunger pangs and suppress your appetite. We test the theory and bring you the results The Theory >> Although sunflower seeds have the potential to curb hunger, they were not an effective appetite suppressant

After we stumbled across an article on how sunflower seeds are a ‘flat belly’ food, further research ensued, revealing that sunflower seeds have a large quantity of vitamin B — a nutrient that promotes anti-inflammation in the abdominal area. In other words, they will stop you from putting on weight around your stomach. The high levels of vitamin E found in them also help curb hunger. Put two and two together and you have a food that should help you lose weight as well as help you to eat less at subsequent meals — which is why snacking on them is highly recommended. We put the theory to the test and this is what we found:

“Too much efforT, hardly any resulTs” Ever since I came across an article that said sunflower seeds work wonders at suppressing hunger and so, helps you lose weight, I wanted to give it a go. When I finally got down to it — the first thing that struck me was that it is too much of an effort. Unfortunately, shelled sunflower seeds aren't easily available and having to shell each seed before you eat it is exhausting in itself. And, if you happen to miss peeling off the husk by mistake, there are chances of it getting lodged in your throat, which did happen to me on more than one occasion. Diligently eating the seeds for almost a month made no difference to my appetite at subsequent meals and ever since I found out that these seeds are high in

calories, my enthusiasm withered away entirely. I think I will be much better off snacking frequently on healthier alternatives than snacking solely on sunflower seeds. — shirley mistry

“frusTraTing, buT noT really suppressing” I love sunflower seeds, so hearing that they could keep my mid-day hunger pangs at bay was quite exciting. I immediately bought myself a large bag of the seeds and proceeded to munch on them every time I got even slightly hungry. While eating the seeds did help me stay away from junk food for a while, they didn’t really fill me up. Instead, eating too many of them left a funny residue on my palate, that made drinking water seem unappetising. And, after I stopped eating them, I could go straight back to junk food in a matter of minutes. They take a while to eat because you have to shell them before you eat them, so you can't gorge on a handful all at once. This means that you're spending most of your time shelling sunflower seeds — which doesn't help you be productive at work. With all my energy spent there, it's true that I ate less of other snacks, but I was not satisfied and definitely not less hungry. It works on the same principle as chewing gum — when your mouth is busy, you’re not eating anything else. But they don’t really suppress your appetite and after a while, you’ll tire of them and cave into your cravings. I don't think I'll be using this as my go-to remedy for the munchies. — rhea dhanbhoora

« healthy combinations: apples + chocolate A study that was carried out by the National University of Singapore, claims that pairing apples and chocolates has several health benefits. Radhika R. finds out more

A

re apples and chocolates good for you when you eat them together? Barry Halliwell, a food science professor at National University of Singapore certainly thinks so. Apples and chocolates are two of the most easily available food items in the market, but they are still ignored as health foods. Instead, we keep hearing about how eating chocolate will make you put on weight and how apples might contain too much sugar. But, since they are rich in cocoa, vitamins, fibre and antioxidants, they are the perfect recipe if you want to stay young. We don’t know how anyone can stay away from chocolate, but if you’re not a big fan of the taste of apples combined with chocolate, you can throw them in a blender and create a thick paste for a homemade face mask. The antioxidants in chocolates will fight bacteria and moisturise your face at the same time, while the collagen-rich apples will help keep sagging skin at bay and enhance cell regeneration, making your skin glow. Apart from the beauty benefits, this food combination also improves physical health. The dream team is widely known to reduce the risks of prostate and lung cancer. Apples, if they are consumed with dark chocolate, (that consists of 70% cocoa and therapeutic polyphenols), can fight >> Why choose between chocolate and apples when you can have both! A compound present in apples called quercetin, that is highly inflammatory and prevents heart diseases, is much more beneficial when it is mixed with the flavanoids that are present in chocolates. The same antiinflammatory compound helps avert allergies. It not only prevents new allergies from developing, but also cures existing ones. This compound is also known to ease food sensitiveness across the board. This pair also plays an important role in keeping a strict check on your cholesterol levels. A chemical found in apples called pectin, sticks to the cholesterol, stopping it from entering your blood stream, while the stearic acid in chocolates uses its natural properties to help keep cholesterol levels stable and in turn, keep you healthy. Last but not least, this combination also helps with diabetes management. A common misconception, that is still widely believed, is that people suffering from diabetes should not eat sweets and that chocolates are their biggest enemy. The key is to pair the right food types. The proteins and fats found in this duo slow down the absorption of glucose in your blood stream and lower your insulin level. Pairing them with one another can lessen the blood sugar impact instantly. So, pour some melted chocolate on cut apples or blend them together to form a smoothie in order to enjoy their benefits.

Cheat sheet

No, we’re not helping you cheat on your exercise routine. Instead, we’re telling you why even a breather between sets can keep you from achieving the perfect body. Dev Goswami tells you what cheats are harming your workout wasting tiMe On Music

>> If you spend too much time trying to find the perfect song in between exercises, your heart rate will fall back to it’s usual rate, ruining your workout

Remember that while working out, you should concentrate on things such as holding your posture and following an exercise plan to the T, instead of finding the best song to exercise to. Wasting time between exercises causes your heart-rate to drop back to its normal rate and also reduces your body temperature. It is important for your body to stay upbeat through your workout. So, ensure that you don’t take a break of more than 30 seconds and rest for no more than 2-3 minutes between exercises.

Fewer reps, MOre tiMe Yes, fewer reps do mean that you'll be done with your routine faster. But, it also means that you will be left with fewer results. Doing fewer reps or sets will mean that you aren’t pushing your body to the limit and that your muscles aren’t getting the workout that they should.

using the swing This is almost always not a conscious cheat, but using momentum while lifting weights means that you’re cheating! But, if you stop working out every time you feel a slight strain, it is a sign that you lack motivation. You don’t have to subscribe to the theory of ‘no pain, no gain,’ but remember that if you want good results, you will have to push your body to its limits. Stomach cancer has caused over 7.36 lakh deaths worldwide, simply because it was detected too late. For a form of cancer that is completely curable, early detection is extremely important. Shirley Mistry tells you more An Overview Stomach cancer, sometimes also referred to as gastric cancer, is a form of cancer that affects the lining of the stomach. Other types of stomach cancer involve the lymphatic system and connective tissue such as blood vessels, fat and muscles. Gastric cancer is the most common and makes up for 90-95% of all the cases reported. Common symptoms of the condition include: l Heartburn. l Nausea. l A bloated feeling. l Indigestion. l Discomfort. l Loss of appetite.

any kind of curative treatment. Diagnostic tests, such as high-definition endoscopies and endoscopic ultrasounds, if employed more often, can be instrumental in bringing down the mortality risk associated with gastric cancer, since these would enable early detection, diagnosis and staging.”

endOscOpic UltrAsOUnd (eUs)

Endoscopy has always been a part of the diagnostics associated with stomach cancer, but an Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) is a more advanced procedure and definitely helps improve the quality and depth of the diagnosis, as well as the treatment. Dr. Vinay tells us that unlike conventional endoscopy, which enables physicians and surgeons to see only the inner-most lining of the stomach, EUS imaging allows eArly detectiOn is key clinical practitioners to visualise all the layers. This As we mentioned earlier, as far as stomach cancer is means that an abnormality below the surface lining, concerned, the most crucial concern is the fact that late such as a growth that was detected during a prior detection of the cancer leaves very little scope for the endoscopy or under an X-ray, can be further evaluated treatment to show results. But, when it is detected at an with EUS, helping the physician better understand the early stage, stomach cancer can be cured completely. nature of abnormality and prescribe the best Dr. Vinay Dhir, gastroenterologist and chief of possible treatment. An added advantage with EUS is that it also helps endosonography, Baldota Institute of Digestive Sciences, Global Hospitals, tells us, “Too many patients assess surrounding structures, such as the gall bladder, underestimate the symptoms, which delays diagnosis bile duct and pancreatic duct. “EUS is a cutting-edge and treatment. If treatment is delayed for too long, our tool, which has the potential to bring about radical options become limited and it may be too late to save improvements in any patient's outcome. It benefits the patient. By the time a patient seeks medical aid, the patients suffering from stomach cancers, pancreatic cancer has often reached an advanced stage, leading to cancer, gallstones and tumours of the gastrointestinal a situation where we are left with very little scope for tract,” Dr. Vinay adds.

« Know more: Social networKing: the agony & the ecStaSy The threat social networking websites pose to your actual social life is well-known. But, have you thought about the psychological effects? Aman Bhonsle, an author on social media and a visiting faculty at media schools, tells you what you have to lose

I

n a world that is becoming increasingly connected by convenient and affordable technology, the spread and reach of information has become instant. We are looking at an unprecedented rise in our habitual yearning for instant gratification as well as immediate solutions. How we genuinely feel has become less important, as compared to how we want others to believe we feel. Social networking helps us connect with long-lost friends, helps organise our various social contacts, keeps us abreast of the happenings in our friends’ lives, helps build brands and best of all, doesn't cost a paisa. We’re sure you can easily recollect the moments in your day when you log on to your social media account, ‘like’ a few posts, ‘share’ or retweet what you like and ‘comment’ or chat with other people. What do you stand to lose, you ask? Well, a lot.

what we stand to lose Here are a few social media related conditions that are commonly recognised: Excessive usage: Spending a disproportionate amount of time on social media comes at the cost of your family and work commitments. Social media dependency: An almost oxygenlike dependency and an obsessive need to socialise on the internet rather than going out, means that you lose out on meeting real people and investing in real relationships. When you start judging your success based on what others do and share on the internet, it can lead to

>> If you can’t pry yourself away from social media websites, you may need help

jealousy, frustration and, in extreme cases, emotional breakdowns. Compulsive PR: This is a self-conscious and selfimage related need that translates into constantly projecting a certain picture of your lifestyle to others. You feel like you haven't really achieved something unless you write about it on your social media account. This includes writing about your emotional ups and downs, about

every moment in your life, posting pictures of what you’re eating and updating your whole group of social media friends (some whom you might not even know) with your location. Status update anxiety: Feelings of anxiety or guilt that are related to not updating your status update. This also includes feeling nervous when your status or tweet does not get enough likes or retweets.

solve the issue All these problems affect your overall psychological health. As we mentioned earlier, this can lead to emotional and mental breakdowns. You can also be at risk of compromising on your sleep and jeopardising your real relationships as well as your overall well-being. However, the problem is that if you do realise that you are suffering from a social media addiction, you can't visit a doctor to get diagnosed. So, what do you do? These tips will help you: Spend time with real people: Attend events, invest time in a hobby, meet friends over coffee and spend time outdoors. You'll discover that there's more to life than just social media. Kill those apps: Block or refrain from using certain apps or games that are notorious for their addictive nature and cause you to spend a high amount of time on them. Time budgeting: If you feel like you have good will-power, draw up a daily plan where you do not go online for more than an hour every day. Ironically, there are several applications on the internet that can block your access to social media websites after you've used them for a certain amount of time every day. Deactivate your account: This is the worst-case scenario. If you just can’t stay away from social media or limit your use, you should consider deactivating your social media accounts. It might take a few days to get used to not being constantly connected, but once you do, you'll feel a lot better and it will get easier with time.

dear barbara, I understand the importance of keeping my skin safe from the sun — especially during summer. So, I have started applying sunscreen on my arms and face. However, the problem is that it feels sticky and heavy. I am tempted to stop using them but I know I shouldn’t. What do your suggest? — karan arora, lokhandwala dear karan, First of all, you need to apply sunscreen, no matter what, or you are putting your skin at risk of sun damage. The reason you might be getting a sticky, heavy feeling is that you aren’t using a good sunscreen. There are several sunscreens available in the market that are extremely light and you won’t even feel the difference after applying them (check out our selection on right). You could try using spray based sunscreens and you should also ask your friends to see if they can recommend a brand. One rule you should follow while buying sunscreens is to opt for gel-based ones as they are much lighter.

UCKNOW: On the birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, BSP chief Mayawati on Monday attacked BJP leaders saying when polls come they see Dalits as Hindus but later they do not even like to sit with them, and the party was not happy when the architect of the Constitution got Bharat Ratna. Her attack on BJP came soon after the party's prime minister nominee Narendra Modi raked up Ambedkar to slam Congress. "BJP had not liked it then -- Bharat Ratna to Ambedkar -- and using the Advani's 'rath yatra' as an excuse it (BJP) withdrew support to V.P. Family ‘silver’ adds sheen to netas’ assets N

EW DELHI: Silver has added a sparkle to assets declared by many women leaders in fray for Lok Sabha elections, including biggies like Sonia Gandhi and Sushma Swaraj, as a spike in the price of white metal has pushed up their wealth. The price of silver, also known as poor man's gold, has nearly doubled in the past five years and currently stands at nearly Rs 43,000

silver and its value has jumped to Rs 39.16 lakh this year from about Rs 18.37 lakh in 2009, as per her election affidavits. The quantity remained unchanged from 2009. Cine star Jaya Prada Nahata, who is contesting from Uttar Pradesh on RLD ticket, has disclosed that 1.5 kilogram owned by her is now worth over Rs 69,000. This marks a significant rise from the earlier recorded value of

per kilogram. An analysis of affidavits filed by some of the prominent candidates contesting the Lok Sabha polls reveal that many of them possess silver assets -- including jewellery and articles. Value of these items has grown considerably on the back of increased prices. In most of these cases, the silver assets owned by the leaders are their ancestral properties. The value of silver assets of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, who is contesting from Rae Bareli, has surged by nearly Rs.21 lakh in the past five years. She has 88 kilograms of

her silver at about Rs 30,000 in 2009. Congress leader Chandresh Kumari Katoch, fighting the polls from Rajasthan, too has seen the value of her silver assets more than double to Rs 13.5 lakh. In 2009 and 2014, the total quantity of silver owned by her has remained same at 30 kilogram. Another well-known politician who seems to have a liking for silver is senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj. As per the latest affidavit, her silver assets have increased to 5.5 kilogram, now worth over Rs 2.36 lakh, whereas she just owned about 400 grams in 2009.

The BSP supremo said that Dalits and backwards will not be 'misguided' as they want that the girl of their caste becomes the prime minister of the country. Launching a no-holds barred attack on Modi, Mayawati said she had doubts about him being a person of backward class. "He (Modi) has never told which backward caste he belongs too," the former chief minister told PTI. She also attacked Modi over his "knowledge of history". "Modi is a strange man. He says something and does something else. He does not have the knowledge of history and gives wrong statistics," Mayawati said.

TOP VIEW

The current non-system in international monetary policy is, in my view, a source of substantial risk, both to sustainable growth as well as to the financial sector. It is not an industrial country problem, nor an emerging market problem, it is a problem of collective action. We are being pushed towards competitive monetary easing... Extreme monetary easing, in my view, is more cause than medicine. The sooner we recognize that, the more sustainable world growth we will have.

This figure far outpaces expectations for sales growth in the US 2014 CFO Outlook (54%) and is an endorsement of resounding confidence in the region’s business prospects, despite an abundance of macroeconomic and market risks.

Optimism is tempered by margin pressures The proportion of CFOs in Asia that expects profits to grow is also very high, yet has fallen to 60% from last year’s 65%. The “value gap between those who expect revenues to rise and those who expect profits to rise is 16 percentage points, up from 7 last year—suggesting that it is getting tougher to extract value out of revenue growth.

But a greater proportion, 51%, say they will seek to build profitability through the use of technology and automation, such as customer relationship management programmes, better management and supervision of supply chains and forecasting.

Financial risks are the top concern 36% of Asia-based CFOs say financial market risk is their single greatest concern in 2014, compared to 22% in 2013. Yet, he says, “The outlook for growth continues to improve, though at different rates in different industries. Mathews is sanguine about political change in India this year. “Political parties across the spectrum have supported the growth of IT and IT-enabled services industries, and we expect this to continue in the fukets. That can only be done with disture as well.

M&A into India appeals

Just 13% of CFOs are worried that political change in their home countries this year will have a negative impact on their business; 38% across Asia expect a positive impact. Political risk is shrugged off in Thailand (where just 10% are worried), while majorities in Indonesia (57%) and India (53%) are optimistic about the impact of elections this year.

Southeast Asia is top M&A target Organic growth is the number-one way CFOs intend to use surplus cash, while just 24% will spend it on M&A. Some 62% of CFOs say that they do not have M&A plans in 2014, around the same proportion as in 2013. Of those that do, the most popular market is Southeast Asia—ranked first in 2014 from second last year.

Multinationals have a value edge A substantially higher proportion of multinational CFOs (66%) say they expect profits to grow in 2014, compared to CFOs from local companies (54%). This is despite similar expectations for revenue growth in each group—suggesting local companies will face even tighter margin pressure this year.

Many seek to reduce long-term debt Some 41% of CFOs say their companies are likely to adjust their capital structure to decrease the weighting of long-term debt. In terms of the type of financing, bank loans are the stand-out preference, picked by 57%. For many, internal funding sources are greatly preferred to any other means of finance. Meanwhile, around a third of CFOs (31%) expect capital costs to rise. . Just 35% plan to raise capex, down from 46% in 2013.

Angad Mhaiskar’s sensational act in ‘Sapne Apne Apne’

Kumar Gandharva’s kin commemorate his 90th birth anniversary T

By Amarednra Dhaneshwar

he late Kumar Gandharva (1924 to 1993) was not only one of the most celebrated child prodigies of Hindustani music but was also the first professional singer in his family. Born as Shivramayya Komkali, he earned the epithet 'Kumar Gandharva' (child minstrel) at the young age of 10 when he began to reproduce the disc music of great stalwarts of the earlier generation like Faiyaz Khan, Abdul Karim Khan and Sunderabai. He went on to defy conventional gharana norms with a view to interpret classical music as per his own individual instinct and genius. He also created twelve new ragas while seeking to establish the close connection between the folk music of north India and Hindustani music. Kumar Gandharva's progeny is full of musicians. His wife Vasundhara, now 86, has had a good career. His son, Mukul Shivputra, is acknowledged as a wayward genius. His daughter Kalapini Komkali has made a name for herself as the female voice of Kumar Gandharva's singing style. His grandson Bhuvanesh is now a leading singer of the young generation. Kalapini and Bhuvanesh got together to present a programme in memory of Kumar Gandharva on the occasion of 90th birth anniversary at the NCPA Experimental Theatre. The duo gave a spirited performance which was lapped up by the fans of Kumar Gandharva. Both Kalapini and Bhuvanesh look upon Kumar Gandhrava as the supreme ideal of their music. Kumar Gandharva's enunciation of the musical note used to be full of emotional intensity. Both the singers have inherited this. By Vijay Shanker On April 8th, Kumar Gandharv would have completed 90 years of ne of the most talented disciples of Guru Smt. Daksha Mashruwala, Siddhi age. Komkalis sang a sample of this recieved fine orchestral support and conculded the performance form too. Kumar Gandharva also invented compound ragas with Moksha as the dancer unites with the Alimighty and lik 'Sohini Bhatiyar' 'Dhanbasanti' and others. 'Mharuji Bhulo experiences eternal bliss. ngad Mhaiskar is the new blue-eyed boy of Marathi theatre and television. His play ‘Sapne Apne Apne’ is the toast of Marathi drama circles and his role of a youth who dreams of making it big with lots of money and name for himself and is unaware of the pitfalls of this journey has been a much appreciated performance. Speaking to ADC, Angad says, “The play made the youth identify themselves with the theme and also made them aware about taking the shortcuts to name, money and success.” Speaking about his senior costar Pradeep Patwardhan who plays the conscience of Angad in the play, he says, “Pradeep Sir is not only a wonderful actor but a great person as well and always guided me in my performance and made me comfortable in spite of being such a senior actor.” Angad has made his mark in television with his Zee TV show ‘Tu Tithe Mee’ which has been running for the past two years and has made Angad a household name. Now aiming for films, Angad will soon be seen in a Hindi film ‘Dekh Tamasha Dekh’ which is a political and social satire based on a true story, and it revolves around the search for the religious identity of a poor man crushed under the weight of a politician's hoarding and is directed by theatre veteran Feroze Khan. Looks like Angad has found his own ‘sapne’ coming true!

ARCELONA: Diego Costa was carried off with a bloody leg after scoring Atletico Madrid’s second goal in a 2-0 win at 10man Getafe, although the team said its star striker escaped without a serious injury. Atletico extended its Spanish league lead to three points with five rounds to play as it closes in on what would be its first league title in 18 years. Costa slammed into the post yesterday while poking in his 26th goal of the season in the 84th minute, opening a cut on his left shin and requiring the stadium’s medical crew to carry him off the pitch while he covered his face and muffled his screams. While his teammates looked distraught as he writhed on the pitch, Atletico said less than 10 minutes after the match on Twitter that “luckily Diego Costa only has a cut after hitting the post.” “He’s fine, calm, a cut doesn’t do any more harm,” Atletico coach Diego Simeone said about his leading scorer. “We now have five games left, and we have to play each one like it was a final.” Despite the scare, Atletico took advantage of Barcelona’s loss on Saturday to open up a three point lead over Real Madrid with Barcelona another point behind. Defender Diego Godin gave Atletico the lead in the 40th before Getafe’s Alexis Ruano was dismissed

Atletico then applied the same stout defenCe that it used to eliminate Barcelona from the Champions League this week to keep Getafe in the relegation zone. Costa was back in Atletico’s starting 11 having recovered from a right thigh injury that sidelined him for two games. The Brazilian-born player is having a breakout season that has earned him a spot on Vicente del Bosque’s squad for Spain in this summer’s World Cup. He showed no signs of slowing down as he deployed the same physical style of play that has made

ERLIN: Michael Schumacher is “showing small signs of progress”, his spokeswoman said, with the Formula One legend slowly recovering from devastating brain injuries suffered in a ski accident.”There are short moments of consciousness and he is showing small signs of progress,” Schumacher’s manager Sabine Kehm told German broadcaster ARD. “There are moments when he is awake and moments when he is conscious, which make us happy and give us great courage.”Of course I am not a doctor, but medically, there is a distinction between being awake and being conscious, the latter meaning there is an ability to interact with his surroundings.”I don’t want to disclose details out of respect for the family, but we have no doubt at all in the abilities of the doctors treating Michael, they are experts in their field.”Kehm stressed that any interaction with Schumacher is “on a very limited basis” and added that “a medical prognosis is not possible” due to the nature of his brain injury.

him the revelation of the league this season, earning three fouls and two yellow cards for Getafe’s defenders in the first half hour. And after Codina blocked his penalty kick, Costa kept hustling and got his chance to pull to within two goals of league leader Cristiano Ronaldo when he slid to meet Adrian Lopez’s cross. The goal came at a high price, with his cries heard across the pitch at Alonso Perez Coliseum following his brutal collision with the upright. Godin put Atletico in front when he rose up over his marker to guide in Juanfran Torres’ cross with a wellplaced header over Codina, who was caught off his line and yet nowhere near Godin.

R

OME: Ferrari’s Formula One boss Stefano Domenicali quit on Monday over the legendary Italian team’s disastrous start to the 2014 season. “It is time for a significant change,” Domenicali said in a Ferrari statement announcing his resignation. Ferrari have failed to get in the top three in the first three races of the season and are just fifth in the constructors’ table. Ferrari’s North American CEO Marco Mattiacci will assume control of the team, his remit simple - to reverse the scuderia’s fortunes in a year when Mercedes are leaving all in their wake. Domenicali took over from Jean Todt as Ferrari’s team principal in 2008. But he has faced growing pressure over the poor performances of drivers Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen.”There are

special moments that come along in everyone’s professional life when one needs courage to take difficult and very agonising decisions,” Domenicali said in the statement.”It is time for a significant change. As the boss I take responsibility, as I always have done, for our current situation,” he added. “This decision has been taken with the aim of doing something to shake things up,” he said. Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo thanked Domenicali “for his sense of responsibility up to today where he placed Ferrari’s interests before his own”. Domenicali’s near sevenyear reign featured a constructors title in his first year in charge but crucially no drivers’ titles, with Felipe Massa going closest in 2008. Alonso had to settle for second best to Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel in 2010 and 2012. New technical rules introduced for Formula One cars this season has left Ferrari uncharacteristically playing catch-up to the likes of Mercedes who have won all three races in 2014. Nico Rosberg started the ball rolling in Australia and Malaysia with Lewis Hamilton taking the honours in Bahrain.

After Sachin, Rishi hopes for IPL double with Viru

N

By Bharat Sharma

EW DELHI: Sharing the dressing room with Sachin Tendulkar is a memory that Rishi Dhawan would cherish all his life and now the young Himachal Pradesh all-rounder is confident that he would have an equally great time playing alongside Virender Sehwag for Kings XI Punjab this season. "What do I say about Sachin paaji. It was special to spend time with him. The IPL winning moments with him will stay with me forever. He used to point out all my faults at the nets and I became a better player as the tournament went on. Now it is great to play with Viru paaji," Dhawan told PTI while recollecting his stint with Mumbai Indians, who won the IPL last season. The 24-year-old was bought for Rs three crore at the back of a solid show in the Ranji Trophy where he was the highest wicket-taker besides scoring 450 runs. He said his focus this IPL is to perform his dual role so well that he gets a shot at being the seaming all-rounder India is looking for a long time. The expectations have increased from the lad from Mandi after he did well in the recent domestic T20 games in Mohali. "There is no point putting pressure on myself ahead of the IPL. It has been a good time for me and my family since the auction. I am not really distracted by the attention and the focus is on playing good cricket. Hopefully, it will get me into the Indian team," Dhawan said. Getting into the national team like any upcoming player is the ultimate dream for Dhawan, who can realise it rather quickly given that India are still unable to find a seaming all-rounder for the long run. Stuart Binny could not do much in the recent chances he got while Irfan Pathan has been out of the team owing to form and fitness. "I am trying the best I can irrespective of the level I am playing at. It now depends on the selectors, when they think of giving me the opportunity," he said.

KKR CAN CREATE MAGIC, SAYS HORN N

SPORTS

EW DELHI: Renowned adventurer and explorer Mike Horn shared his life experiences with the Kolkata Knight Riders as part of their build-up for the upcoming Indian Premier League and said the team is capable of creating magic this season. "I find working with KKR really relaxing. The surrounding is much more relaxed than the other teams I've worked with before. I think the coach understands the players and he's got confidence in the players," Horn, who has earlier worked with the Indian cricket team and the South African side, said after a meeting with the KKR players. Horn joined the Kolkata Knight Riders camp in UAE, where the first leg of the event is to be held from April 16 to 30, said the players have it in them to win the trophy. "I think the selection of the players was very well done and there was a lot of research in who they wanted to play for the team and that makes it a very well balanced team. With a well balanced team a magic it creates where they become friends and just being with them for a couple of days now I can see how the play-

UMBAI: Saying that Indians are second to none, former pacer Venkatesh Prasad today advocated having more Indian coaches in the Indian Premier League set-up. Out of eight IPL teams, only Kings XI Punjab have an Indian Head coach in Sanjay Bangar. “It is an Indian Premier League. Prosecutor says Pistorius, Steenkamp argued on night she died

PRETORIA: Oscar Pistorius argued with his girlfriend shortly before shooting her dead, the prosecution lawyer alleged today as his gruelling cross-examination of the sprinter went into a second week. Prosecutor Gerrie Nel accused the 27-year-old of concocting evidence in his defence against the charge of murdering Reeva Steenkamp on Valentines' Day last year. "It's the state's case, Pistorius, that she wanted to leave and that you weren't sleeping, you were both awake," said Nel. "That's not correct my lady, that's untrue," Pistorius replied softly."There was an argument," Nel said, drawing another denial. Nel repeatedly described the athlete's explanation that he accidentally shot Steenkamp through a locked bathroom door as "so improbable that it cannot be reasonably possible".
